Plain sailing for Mum, and her perfect baby!

Cont. from Front

From the moment Morgan demonstrated that she was an exemplary mother, attending to her new-

born, the calf has been swimming with her in the “OrcaOcean” installations at Loro Parque. But it has been a long, eventful journey for her.

When Morgan was rescued, initially, she was attended by a team of experts from the Harderwijk Dolphinarium to help the lost animal. At the time, she suffered

Ice-cream woman’s ‘attempted murder’

A WOMAN motorist has been accused of sedating her 12-yearold daughter with ice-cream, and trying to kill her by driving them both into Santa Cruz Port.

Fortunately, they were rescued by local fishermen and the Port police, who saw what had happened. Prosecutors have requested a five-year prison sentence, as well as a six-year parental ban for the woman, who, last year in June, tried the same ice-cream trick, and drove her car into the Atlantic Ocean. Prosecutors, who accused the woman of gender violence, said it was a case of attempted murder.

severe malnutrition, and was simply skin and bones. She weighed just 430kg, and keepers at the Dutch dolphinarium were not sure whether she would even survive the first night with them. However, they were hopeful that, with a proper level of care, affection and attention, as well as adequate nutrition, the animal could make a recovery. Thanks to the efforts of the Harderwijk team, Morgan began to regain her weight and strength. But there was still a snag: the Harderwijk installations were not equipped to keep orcas, so the Dutch authorities held a formal commission to determine her future. A group of international and independent experts concluded that there were just two viable alternatives for the animal: euthanasia, or let her be kept at an aquarium installation, able to comply with the necessary conditions for this species. Morgan’s great fortune was that, at that moment, with Loro Parque having the most modern of all installations, worldwide, for orcas, it was sounded out to see whether it would accept the animal. Despite all the challenges awaiting them, Loro Parque officials agreed to take her, if only because the alternative was unthinkable for them. After a few months at Loro Parque, Morgan adapted

to her new conditions and integrated perfectly into the existing group of orcas there. At the same time, though, it was discovered that she suffered a severe hearing deficiency… yet another argument to confirm that the animal was incapable of surviving on her own in the wild. Given this last factor, there were a number of questions about what, exactly, the delivery of a calf would suggest for an animal with no hearing. Today, Loro Parque is sharing the best possible news: the delivery was completed in a perfectlynormal manner, and the first hours after the birth met with the best expectations. It is impossible to know the gender of the new calf yet, although the most important issue at the moment is that both mum and her calf are in a perfect state of health. Loro Parque will keep you all informed about the development of the two orcas, and both staff and officials are also taking this opportunity to thank all their visitors over the years, from many parts of the world. These include the tour operators and their customers, as well as all the collaborators in the scientific field, for supporting our Loro Parque mission: to protect and conserve animals and their natural habitats for future generations.

Ryanair chiefs shattered by new, damaging strike

BUDGET airline Ryanair has cancelled 190 of its 2,400 flights scheduled for today (Friday) because of strikes by cabin crews in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. The strike was mooted earlier this month, without a date, but it means that some 30,000 passengers will be affected. A press release by the Irish company says it has contacted all travellers,

booked on the cancelled flights, to rearrange their trips, or it will provide refunds. Ryanair, which “sincerely regrets” what it terms an “unnecessary disruption” for customers, claims that in the last few weeks, it has made “significant progress” in negotiations with the various unions in

the UK, Ireland, Italy and Germany. Managing Director Kenny Jacobs says there is no need for the industrial action, which, he admits, is “harming the business and reducing customerconfidence, at a time when fuel prices are rocketing”. He adds: “If they continue,

we will, unavoidably, have to reconsider our capacity for growth for this winter and for summer 2019.” Jacobs is calling for unions to use their common sense, and co-operate with Ryanair to “finalise agreements that benefit cabin crew and pilots, in the next few weeks”. The puzzled MD asks: “If we can successfully reach agreements with unions in Ireland, the UK, Germany and Italy, why can’t some of the unions in Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain do so?” Cabin crew have reported a top-down structure with “unapproachable” bosses, threatening disciplinary

action for striking, union representatives having to continue their duties outside of working hours, and, generally, poor conditions and pay. When they are placed on compulsory stand-by for a week at a time, they are not paid unless summoned to work, and they do not start earning for their flights until doors-to-manual. Cabin crew have reported “pressure” to sell items on board, for which they receive commission. But unions across Europe have called for Ryanair to comply with the employment law, in countries where pilots and cabin crew are based.

Adeje centre to embrace top-sector trainees only

CANARIAN President Fernando Clavijo and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (pictured) have laid a ceremonial stone at the new CIFP (Integrated Centre for Professional Training) in Adeje. Work began on building the third-level centre in July, and is scheduled to take 22 months. The centre, being built on the Calle Lisboa, close to El Madroñal and the Gran Sur shopping centre, will offer training for up to 500 students in sectors such as hotel management and tourism, along with agro-food industries, IT and communication. The land was actually set aside for construction in 2014, and Adeje Council asked the regional government to proceed with planning and permissions. That was licenced in 2017, with 85% of funding coming from the European Regional Development fund (FEDER). Mayor Rodríguez Fraga, said: “This vitally-impor-

tant infrastructure will give us a new training tool to increase accessibility to professional positions for our population.” But he added: “This isn’t enough, though. We have many students who need improved access, to ensure they are in an optimum position when it comes to job-seeking”. Also present at the cer-

emonial stone-laying were heads of the education department Ana Dorta, Jonathan Martín and Manuel Jorge, as well as Adeje Councillors Adolfo Alonso, Carmen Rosa González and Andrés Pérez. The new CIFP centre will become a reference point for professional training here in the south, with an

expected influx of students from between Santiago del Teide and Granadilla. Fernando Clavijo underlined “the backing the regional government is giving to increase professional training options throughout the islands, to meet the need of an increasingly-demanding market”. He added that they were

here to meet the demands of the student community in the south of Tenerife, who needed a first-class, professional training institution of this kind. The new centre will comprise a four-storey building, with classrooms and practical areas, to meet the educational needs of all the courses on offer.

The men who couldn’t stop robbing churches THREE men, aged 20, 24 and 41, accused of robbing a number of Tenerife churches since the beginning of the year, have finally been caught.

Two of the three, charged with being involved in the robberies of six churches, one down south in San Miguel, another in Punta del Hidalgo, and the remainder in Anaga, both up north, are now behind bars. When the police caught up with the trio, they confiscated their vehicle and found several items of value inside, associated with different parishes, The accused planned their thieving carefully. They posed as tourists, studying the entrances and exits of each church, as well as the priceless objects inside the premises. On 11th August, while the parish priest was asleep

Marijuana plants gave game away! in Punta de Hidalgo, he was awoken abruptly by someone banging on the church doors. He called the police, and, when they arrived, they searched the church and told the priest the church laptop had been stolen, as well as a silver medal from the brethren. Fortunately, these items were recovered and returned to the priest. The robberies, which

were reported from the beginning of the year, continued until the end of August. With the help of witnesses, and, following an intense investigation, officers finally caught up with the 41-year-old thief, who later identified the other two involved. The investigation has finally been completed, with two of the three men serving a prison sentence.

THE Guardia Civil have detained two Candelaria men, aged 39 and 63, charging them with crimes against public safety, after catching them growing marijuana. Officers arrested them after being told by Local Police about the unusual activity inside a Candelaria house,

in Barranco Hondo. Guardia officers were granted a search warrant for the premises, and they soon discovered some 96 marijuana plants, which were enough for the men to be convicted, as well as the plants which were growing, and the equipment used for cultivation. Officers also found 504.79 euros in cash, along with keys for a vehicle, used, presumably, for transporting the marijuana.

Wolfpack sex-gang film assault on a new victim

Chickens

avoid roasting! THE fire services were called out on Wednesday night to douse flames at some chicken coops in Tegueste, Lanzarote. Local Police, patrolling the area, spotted the blaze on a road connecting Nazaret to Famara, in the Teleclub vicinity. They alerted the fire brigade because they were concerned that this

particular area housed several chicken and rooster coops. Firemen and the cops spotted two butane gas bottles in the locked coops, so they began releasing several chickens to keep them safe. As well as putting out the blaze, the firemen also cooled down the gas bottles and moved them to a safer area. The Guardia Civil, who were also called to the scene, are now investigating how the fire started.

AN infamous Spanish gang of men, found guilty of sexually abusing a woman at Pamplona’s famous San Fermin festival in 2016, have struck again! Four of the five so-called “La Manada” (Wolfpack) gang are to stand trial for another sexual attack on a young woman, aged 21. They are accused of abusing her while in a moving car in Cordoba province. The Sevilla group, Antonio Manuel Guerrero, José Ángel Prenda, Jesús Escudero and Alfonso Jesús Cabezuelo, are alleged to have groped her breasts and kissed her while she was sleeping. The four men videoed this latest sexual attack on a phone, sharing the footage over messaging app WhatsApp. Shocking footage, found on the gang’s phones, was revealed during investigations of the Pamplona attack. And the judge involved alerted a Pozoblanco magistrate to look into the latest attack. The woman met the gang at a local fiesta and chose to go back to Pozoblanco

Sign up to assist cancer research

RESIDENTS of Adeje have been given a chance to sign a petition, supporting the work of Spanish cancer association AECC, by asking the regional government to increase funding for research into the dreadful disease. To coincide with World Cancer Research Day, two tables were set up, at the Town Hall and outside Adeje Health Centre, by the Health Department, under Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo.

She stressed “the importance of the work being carried out to advance the scientific investigation in the fight against this illness”. Councillor Bencomo also emailed all Council staff members to encourage them to sign the petition, and she also made it clear that anyone can sign up online at http://news.aecc.es/public/m/nopodemos-parar-de-investigar. An AECC spokesperson said: “In 2030, the target is a 73% cancersurvival rate. Today, in Spain, it’s only 53%, which is why we have to, as a minimum, double the sum we are investing in cancer research in this country.”

with them in a car driven by Guerrero, who is a member of the Guardia Civil. Prenda, who filmed the attack on Guerrero’s phone, also joined in the groping, as the girl sat in the back between military man Cabezuelo and hairdresser Escudero. Cabezuelo faces an individual assault charge because he later threw the girl from the car, slapping her across the face after she refused to perform oral sex on him. The woman took pictures of her bruises the next day, but didn’t remember the attack. She realised what

had happened, only when police showed her the footage. Guerrero, Prenda, Escudero and Cabezuelo have been on bail since June, awaiting the result of a Supreme Court review of their nine-year sentences for the Pamplona attack. Meanwhile, they have been given restraining orders, so they must stay over 500 metres away from their Pozoblanco victim at all times. Ángel Boza, the fifth gang member, who was involved in the Pamplona attack only, has been sent back to prison for trying to steal sunglasses in Sevilla.

NEWS IN BRIEF Sink-hole disrupts traffic

28th September - 4th October 2018

The feast of music, dance and heaven! THE third Mayantigo Fest, in Costa Adeje’s Plaza Salytien, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, offering visitors “a little bit of heaven” over the weekend.

A SINK-HOLE on one of Madrid’s busiest streets, and just above a metro line, caused huge, rush-hour traffic jams, in the middle of roadworks. Mains drainage company, Canal de Isabel II, had been digging into the road surface to repair underground pipes, when a huge hole opened. It forced workmen to shut three lanes in a northbound direction, and queues stretched back, on to the A-2 motorway. Furious commuters criticised the company for not giving drivers prior warning of the works, which would have caused some delays, anyway. The huge underground pipe, which burst a week ago, is expected to take at least another week to repair. Thousands of commuters were stuck in queues, initially, making them several hours late for work, in some cases. And there were tailbacks throughout the day.

Dad alters boy’s birthday

THE National Police have detained a 41-year-old Spaniard on charges of fraudulence in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. While he was attempting to obtain a duplicate identity card for his son, having misplaced the original, the police noticed that the boy’s date of birth had been tampered with on the Family Book. Officers working at the expedition office in Las Palmas, who were checking the boy’s details on the national data base, realised that the boy’s date of birth did not correspond with that shown in the family book. On closer inspection, the police realised that the boy’s date of birth had been modified. The family book in Spain is an official document, which has to be presented to the administrators who issue official documentation, such as passports or ID cards. The arrested man, who has no previous convictions, is awaiting a court appearance.

Pensioner’s 12ft death fall

A BRITISH pensioner, aged 72, died after he tripped and fell over a barrier at the side of a steep road in Menorca, plummeting four yards on to waste ground below. The tragic incident happened during the early hours of last Saturday, after the man had spent the night out with a friend. He was returning to his hotel in the Cala En Porter area, a popular beach resort on the island’s south coast. A passer-by discovered his body at around 10.30am, and the emergency services arrived shortly after, to no avail. The unnamed holiday-maker is thought to have been staying on the island with his wife. Spanish police launched an investigation into the death, but Guardia Civil officers believe that early signs suggest it was an accident.

There will be traditional music and dance from Adeje and other towns, here and abroad. The weekend event promises a fantastic mix of light and colour, dance and rhythms, bringing people together using the more international language of all: music! This is very much an international event, working to encourage an interest in our local culture, as well as inviting groups from other Canarian and Spanish towns and beyond. It is held in a tourist centre, inviting residents and visitors alike to get to know more about the music, song and dance of Adeje, and also to exchange experiences and cultures. The presentation during both evenings will be in Spanish and English. The event is organised by Adeje School of Music Folklore group, in partnership with the Tourism Department. The Folklore group are also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, and they’re delighted to welcome the Coros and Danzas Mar Menor, from Murcia, Los Campesinos from Lanzarote and Tibet’s Khaita Joyful Dances. “The idea behind setting up the festival was to give people who come on holiday to Costa Adeje a chance to get to know

something of our customs, and our traditional values,” said Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moriera García. “And, after two successful years, we feel we have gone some way towards achieving that with this outdoor show. It is free to the public, and is held in a main thoroughfare of the borough.” Canarian folklore has roots in a diversity of traditions, from Europe, the Americas

and Africa, with a varied selection of music, song and dance, many of which have been revived by the Adeje School of folklore. As well as being a showcase for local folklore groups, the festival also offers a shared space for groups from other parts of Spain, and beyond. The event is made possible through the help of Hovima, Mundos, Grúas Sur, Imegal, Imoque Servicios and BP Adeje.

Brit suspect is found by cops NATIONAL Police have arrested a 37-year-old British citizen, who has been in hiding from the UK authorities in Gran Canaria’s San Bartolome de Tirajana. British police had been searching for him because, they said, he was wanted for

sexually exploiting underage children. The man was identified by a police device at a Playa del Ingles amusement arcade last Friday, and was detained on a European Arrest Warrant, issued by the UK authorities.

They had been relying, anxiously, on efforts by international police to discover his whereabouts. The suspect was transferred to the local police headquarters, where he is waiting to be handed over to the Judicial Authorities.

Spain looking for Brit blood donors

Indian god Ganesh honoured on beach ENRAMADA beach was the setting for Adeje’s traditional offering to the Indian god Ganesh last Sunday, in front of over 100 people, mostly from the local Hindu community. Those in attendance were there to pay their respects to Ganesh, who, according to tradition, is the god of beginnings, honoured at the start of rites and

ceremonies. He is also the “remover of obstacles”, and for this and many other reasons, he is, perhaps, the best-loved and mostpopular Hindu deity. Also present were Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Local Participation Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, invited by the Hindu community. The beach celebrations were the culmination of 10 days of devotions and festivities, with many ritual offerings made to Ganesh.

The last day of the celebrations is known as “ananta chaturdasi”, with large figures representing Ganesh and accompanying idols brought to the sea, to be immersed in the waters by devotees. The significance of the immersion is to wash away the problems of the people Ganesh has taken with him. The Hindu community had also prepared traditional sweet offerings such as modaka and laddu, and the afternoon ended with a communal meal.

DOZENS of lives are saved every day by crucial blood donations, because the majority of surgeries, organ transplants and cancer treatments performed require transfusions. And, despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain this blood is through the generosity of the public. In this case, the plea is directed at the many thousands of Brits living in Spain, including Tenerife. However, those who lived in the UK between 19801996 must check with the donation teams before giving blood. Some authorities do not accept blood from those who did reside there, because of the outbreak of Creutzfeldt-

Jakob (Mad Cow) disease. Those interested in donating will be asked to provide some personal and medical information, along with documentation, to prove their identity. To give blood takes just 10 minutes, in which 450mls are collected, which equates to 10% of an adult’s total blood circulation. It is a completely safe procedure, with minimal sideeffects, and every precaution is taken by medical staff for the health of the donor. If you want to donate blood in Spain you can do this at your local hospital or health centre, which will be happy to provide all the information. It can also be carried out through the Spanish Red Cross (www.donarsangre. org), which operates a number of mobile units, specifically for these donations.

Mum-of-four warned not to breastfeed her child on board plane

KELLY EdgsonPayne, a mother-offour, has lodged a complaint with airline easyJet after being ordered to stop breastfeeding her baby aboard one of their planes. The 36-year-old mum was flying from Gatwick to Fuerteventura with her husband, Ross, 40, and their four children, when she was told she could not breastfeed her one-year-old son, Lex. She said she was “mortified”, and she and her youngest child were both left in tears, after a male member of cabin crew told her she could not feed the infant during take-off. But when she raised the issue with easyJet after landing, she was told that passengers were welcome to breastfeed babies on their flights, so long as they were “discreet”. But Kelly, from Rochester, Kent, for whom breastfeeding on flights had never been an issue, criticised the budget airline for “not seeming to know the law about breastfeeding”. The mother-of-four, of Rochester, Kent, said: ‘It’s absolutely crazy that I was told that I couldn’t feed him; crazy, and really embarrassing for me.

“I find it disappointing that an airline I trust, and who we fly with all the time, actually broke the law in discriminating against me as a breastfeeding mother. “The law in the UK says it protects breastfeeding mothers, and even easyJet’s own website says mothers are welcome to breastfeed at any time during a flight. “There’s no consistency in their messages, and they should not be discriminating against breastfeeding.” She added: “We fly with easyJet literally all the time, and I have always breastfed my children over the years during take-off, because their ears pop and its uncomfortable for them. “Most other cabin crew would actually encourage breastfeeding during takeoff, because it distracts them and stops them from crying. “I’ve never before been told that I can’t feed Lex, or any of my other children, and we’ve flown with him about 16 times in the last year. So I got settled into my seat and I started to feed my son, as I would, usually. “Then, a male member of cabin crew came over and told me I couldn’t feed him during take-off, and that I’d have to stop and strap him in to his infant seat next to me.” She added: “I said, ‘Well, he’s feeding’. But I just had to stop in mid-feed and

hand him to my husband. “I was mortified. I’ve even I’ve stopped at a breakpoint during a marathon before and fed him, but this left me embarrassed. “Even my eldest daughter, who is nine, said, ‘Mummy, they can’t tell you not to breastfeed him’.” Ms Edgson-Payne, mother to Mia, nine, Elena, five, Jax, three, and Lex, one, said a female member of cabin crew approached her after take-off and apologised. “She said the two of them had a bit of a hoo-ha, and she then later came up to me and said, ‘I’m sorry about that. Ignore him, he’s wrong’.” She added that all easyJet offered her by way of compensation was a £25 voucher, to be used on another flight with them. “A spokesman for the airline said: “EasyJet supports breastfeeding, and customers flying with easyJet can breastfeed at any time during the flight. It is not our policy to ask mothers to be discreet, and we make this very clear in our training. “But this flight was operated by another airline, on our behalf, and while they should follow easyJet policies, we are sorry this did not happen on this occasion. “We have followed up to ensure this does not happen in future.”

in the Canary Islands. The special canine unit officers are looking for a place worthy of their special four-legged friend and colleague. And after his years of service, loyalty and dedication, they feel it’s the least they can do. Pol will be eight on 5th October (he thinks), and National Police have made a special announcement, saying: “If you are looking for a loyal friend, look no further. Pol is our special canine officer and he is looking for a good home. If you are interested, please contact 928 304 729, Monday to Friday, between 9am-2pm.”

Brave witnesses cling to thieving knifeman A VIOLENT man, aged 44, was detained by National Police for robbing a taxi driver at knife-point last Sunday afternoon. The arrest took place in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, after the cops had been phoned by the cabbie, and courageous witnesses had hunted down the assailant and held on to him. The taxi-driver told them he had just been robbed violently in a side-street of the La Isleta village, after a man got into the taxi at Lomo Blanco and asked to be taken there.

On arrival, the passenger took a knife to the driver’s neck and demanded all his takings. He then fled with money, a mobile phone and the cabby’s bank card. But brave witnesses ran after the suspect, caught up with him, and restrained him, until the police arrived and arrested the thug. They searched him and recovered the taxi-driver’s belongings, but the knife was found in the vicinity of the attack. The cabby was taken to a nearby medical centre for treatment to the wounds he sustained during the attack, while his cowardly assailant now awaits a court appearance.

At last, women are in the big picture!

PEOPLE involved in the Spanish film industry, waving red fans and flashing big smiles, turned out in droves to witness San Sebastian International Film Festival’s signing the Charter for Parity and Inclusion of Women. Last year, men represented 76% of the Spanish film industry and women just 24%, according to a study made public at last Sunday’s event by CIMA, the Spanish association of women film-makers. It showed an overwhelming domination of men throughout Spain’s film sector, with the exception of wardrobe, where women comprise 86%, and also hair & make-up, 72%. Women held just 12% of the roles as director, a figure which dropped by 3% if documentaries were excluded. “Equality between men and women is the epicentre and the most powerful weapon of democracy,” said Spanish Vice-President Carmen Calvo, at the event. “Film is a powerful weapon. It is a space where life is told, but also where life is displayed. That is why, when women find greater difficulties to access it, really real subjects are not handled. Without us, there is no democracy, and with us, democracy improves.”

Cannes, Toronto, Venice and Locarno have already committed to the historic pledge, which came out of the French Movement 5050/2020 in Cannes in May. In addition to Festival Director Jose Luis Rebordinos and CIMA President Cristina Andreu, who signed the pledge, Culture Minister Jose Guirao, Spanish Film Academy President Mariano Barroso, film directors Chus Gutierrez, Patricia Ferreira, Azucena Rodriguez and Virginia Yague, as well as producer Esther Garcia, were a few of the many personalities packing the press conference in the Kursaal Auditorium. “It is clear that the measures taken until now have not had effect,” said Andreu. “We have a detailed study and have proposed some measures, like calling for subsidies just for women, and raising the amount of money one can receive in public aid if the project is led by a woman.” The initiative calls on the festival to compile statistics by gender, regarding both the number of films received for the selection and those chosen and programmed, to obtain reliable data about projects headed by women. The festival also pledged to publish a list of members of its selection committee and programmers, as well as establish a calendar, which would outline changes to the festival’s executive bodies to achieve current, gender parity.

Spain can build border wall across Sahara, says Trump

AMERICAN President Donald Trump has recommended that Spain build a border wall across the Sahara Desert, to stem the Mediterranean migrant crisis. The Guardian newspaper said that Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell had relayed Trump’s remarks to people at a Madrid luncheon in Madrid. And the comments were widely reported in Spanish media. Trump is believed to have suggested it in June, when Borrell accompanied Spain’s King Felipe and Queen Letizia on an official trip to the White House. A Foreign Ministry spokesperson confirmed

Borrell’s comments to the Guardian, but declined to comment further. According to Borrell, Trump brushed off concerns about the plan’s feasibility, claiming: “The Sahara border can’t be bigger than our border with Mexico.” The US-Mexico border is about 2,000 miles long, while the Sahara Desert stretches an estimated 3,000 miles, across 11 countries in northern Africa. And at roughly 3.6m square miles, it compares more closely to the total size of America. Just two small enclaves in northern Africa are controlled by Spain, Ceuta and Melilla, though both are seen as potential gateways of migration. Spain recently surpassed Greece and Italy as the top destination for Europe-bound migrants, re-

ceiving 33,600 people by sea so far in 2018, according to the International Organisation for Migration. Another 1,723 migrants have also lost their lives in the deadly, Mediterranean crossing. The influx of new arrivals is already straining reception facilities in Spain, according to the Guardian, and giving air to right-wing politicians critical of Pedro Sánchez, its new, Socialist Prime Minister. Trump’s own southern border-wall plans have also been stymied in Congress, which approved just 38m dollars for “border barrier planning and design”, as part of an omnibus spending bill in March. Trump had requested a staggering 25 billion dollars!

Greenpeace ‘car-crash’ makes valid fuel point THE Greenpeace environmental charity “crashed” a car into the wall of Madrid’s Reina Sofía art museum to campaign for petrol and diesel to be scrapped. If Spain is to comply with the Paris Treaty on climate change, petrol and diesel cars will have to stop being sold by the year 2030 at the latest, with all vehicles being powered by electricity or renewable sources. Greenpeace members “reregistered” a sawn-off car with the number plate FIN 2028 (‘END 2028’), and parked it halfway through an existing gap in the ground-level wall, below the entrance to one of the Madrid art trails’ “Big Three”. They hung a canvas wall around it with scattered, papier mâché bricks in the same design as the original, so that it looked as though the car had collided and smashed through it. The instigators also carried banners reading ‘2028: Neither diesel nor petrol’, plus one in American-English, reading ‘2028: Extinction of fossil fueled cars’. And they hung a larger one on the railings above the “crashed” vehicle reading:

‘2028: Polluting cars belong in museums’. This eye-catching protest came at the same time as Greenpeace presented its Europe-wide research. It showed that the number of diesel and petrol cars on the continent’s roads would have to be cut by 80% by 2035, to meet the Paris Treaty criteria of preventing the planet’s average temperature from rising by more than 1.5ºC. If Europe is to comply with the Paris Treaty on climate change, manufacture and sales of vehicles using conventional fuel must cease at least two years before 2030, so that by the 2035 deadline, all bar 20% of diesel and petrol cars would, effectively, have outlived their expected life-span. “This will not only help the climate-change issue, but will also help to solve the growing air-pollution crisis and improve health and quality of life,” said Raquel Montón, Greenpeace Spain’s transport head.

“It’s a challenge for the Spanish and wider European automobile industry, but not to adapt would mean condemning this industry to disappearing altogether, as well as being a death sentence for the environment.” Spain is the EU’s fifth-largest car market, producing and selling 8% of all vehicles, and the sixth-largest in Europe as a whole, making up around half of Germany’s passengervehicle industry. The motor manufacturing and sales industry in Spain makes up around 10% of its GDP. Greenpeace wants to convince Spain’s new Energy Transmission Minister, Teresa Ribera, to join the charity’s round-table on transport so they can, jointly, tackle the issues affecting various towns and cities in Spain caused by vehicles. These include air pollution, for which Barcelona and Madrid were summoned to address by Europe earlier this year. And according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), air pollution is directly responsible for six million deaths around the globe every year.

Spanish golfer Barquin is murdered at US campus TALENTED Spanish golfer Celia Barquin Arozamen was found dead in the pond of her American university campus, near central Iowa, last week. She is believed to have been killed by a 22-yearold “drifter”, Collin Daniel Richards, who has a violent criminal history, and has been charged with firstdegree murder. Her body was found in a pond at Coldwater Golf Links, in Ames, about 50km north of Des Moines. Police, who were alerted to an abandoned golf bag on the course, discovered several stab wounds to her upper torso, head and neck. A police dog tracked her scent to a temporary camp, along a creek near the golf course, where Richards had been living in a tent. He was found with several fresh scratches on his face, consistent with fighting, and a deep laceration to his left hand, which he tried to conceal. One of his friends told investigators that Richards said he had “an urge to rape and kill a woman”, while they were walking on a trail near the course. Local police commander, Geoff Huff, told a news conference:

“It’s still very troubling for something like this to happen in broad daylight, in a community that is as safe as Ames.” Celia, better known as Barquin, was recently crowned Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year. The gifted golfer, from Puente San Miguel, Spain, who was finishing her civil engineering degree, showed her prowess by winning the European Ladies’ Amateur Championship in July. She was also one of the most accomplished female players in Cyclone golf history, said the university. Christie Martens, the women’s head golf coach, said Barquin was “loved by all her team-mates and friends”. She added: “She was an outstanding representative of our school. We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best, and her passion for life.”

THERE are more sewer rats than people in any given city, according to the know-alls, yet there is no scientific basis for this claim. In fact, few of the world’s large cities have attempted to tally their number of rodents.

But Barcelona has just become one of the pioneers to actually count the rats running around their underground networks. Preliminary results from the Catalan capital’s first census show that there is one sewer rat for every seven local residents, according to a report by the Barcelona Public Health Agency. Its technicians, along with experts from a pest-control company called Lokímica, studied the area last year, analysing 63 representative sections of the city’s sewer system, totalling 1,648kms. Thirty traps, set in each sector. were checked daily for four consecutive nights, and yielded a figure of around 107,000 rats living inside 1,000-plus kilometres of accessible tunnels. By multiplying that number by the entire sewer system, experts arrived at a figure of 0.13 rodents for every

resident of Barcelona… or 213,000 sewer rats in all! The study, headed by Sandra Franco, noted that this was a higher density than in Baltimore (0.08 rats per person), but lower than New York’s 0.25 figure. Biologist Rubén Bueno, Lokímica’s technical director, said: “The sewers are a parallel world, and

gaining access to them is very complex, from a logistics viewpoint. “Many sections are not accessible, while others require stopping traffic at street level. And you need toxic-gas detectors and very strict safety protocols.” His company conducts pestcontrol work in Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Mallorca and Barcelona. Large cities, typically, estimate their rat populations on indirect indicators, such as citizen alerts and ratpoison consumption. “The precision achieved by the Barcelona project had never been achieved before in Spain,” said Ruben. Biologist Tomás Montalvo has headed the first bacteriological study of Barcelona’s rats, as part of the same pest-control programme designed by the Public Health Agency. The BCNRATS report, that analysed 212 specimens

caught inside the tunnels, found that 71% were carrying strains of the bacteria Escherichia coli, which are resistant to some antibiotics. Another bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause miscarriages in pregnant women, as well as meningitis in children, was found in 59% of the rats. “The risk of human exposure to these pathogens is an important public-health problem,” was the conclusion reached by Montalvo’s team. Yet bacteria are not the only threat to public health, warns parasitologist María Teresa Galán, of Valencia University. This researcher analysed the innards of around 100 rats, caught in Barcelona’s sewer system, and found that 85% of the animals had worm infestations. The overall advice is: “Steer clear of Barcelona sewers!”

Student’s tragic death after an 11th-floor fall

A STUDENT plunged 11 floors to his death in Spain while, allegedly, practising “parkour” on a Madrid building site. The 17-year-old was attempting, with friends, to perform risky jumps and the art of “parkour”, in which participants aim to get from one point to another in a complex environment, without equipment to assist them, and in the fastest and most efficient way possible. The so-called sport includes running, climbing, swinging, vaulting, jumping, rolling, crawling and other suitable movements, and is usually carried out in urban spaces. The incident happened on a high-rise building, and paramedics called to the scene were unable to save the boy’s life. They said he had died immediately on impact. The building site, which was fenced off to the public to prevent breakins, was also being patrolled by a security guard. But he said he was unaware of the group’s presence until he heard the boys shouting.

Henry VIII’s 16th Century tapestry worth a goldmine A MONUMENTAL tapestry, which cost a king’s ransom when Henry VIII commissioned it in the 16th century, has been discovered in Spain after an assumption that it had been destroyed long ago. As a masterpiece, woven with gold and silver thread, it was the ultimate show of wealth, and, in the 1530s, the Tudor monarch gave it pride of place at his seat of power, in Hampton Court palace. It was almost 20ft wide, and was part of a long-lost set of nine tapestries, depicting the life of Saint Paul. Its Biblical subject also had a strong, political narrative, commissioned around the time of the Act of Supremacy, which established former catholic King Henry as the “Supreme Head on earth of the Church of England”.

The tapestry’s main scene, a dramatic bonfire, with Saint Paul directing the burning of heathen books, is interpreted as a religious antecedent for the king’s own destruction of the monasteries. Research by leading tapestry experts Simon Franses and Thomas P Campbell have confirmed

that this was one of King Henry’s prized possessions, although its supreme quality alone suggests that it could only have been a royal commission. While Franses described it as “one of the most sumptuous and important Renaissance tapestries”, Campbell called it “the Holy Grail of Tudor tapestry”.

Henry VIII was so passionate about tapestries that he boasted 2,500 examples, but, sadly, just a tiny percentage of them have survived, with this one among the greatest. Franses claimed that it even eclipsed the Abraham tapestries, comparable examples that still hang at Hampton Court, “which are

tame Biblical tapestries” against this “dynamic, energetic piece”. He added: “There’s nothing to touch it in the Victoria & Albert, the Royal Collection or the National Trust.” The St Paul tapestries were listed as being at Hampton Court at King Henry VIII’s death in 1547. And, in the 1670s, Charles II reused them in his redecoration of Windsor Castle, where they were last recorded in 1770, before, apparently, disappearing without trace. It has now emerged that a Spanish dealer bought this example in the 1960s, selling it on to a Barcelona collector. It was eventually sold again, to an unidentified Madrid buyer, who has now sent it to Britain to be cleaned and conserved. It will receive its first public exhibition next month, as part of a loan exhibition at S Franses, leading specialists in historic tapestry and textile art, in St James’s London.

Facing up to kiss of death Spain’s happiest to A BREED of bugs, on the rise in Europe and the US, is transmitting a “silent killer” disease, known as “chinches del beso”, or kiss bug, and is related to the traditional bed bug. But this bug bites humans on the face and in areas around the mouth. It then defaecates next to its bite, spreading a parasitic disease which was, until recently, limited to South America. This is known as the Chagas disease and can cause serious cardiac and intestinal complications. Even worse, most people infected don’t know they have it, because there are few, if any, symptoms. It is labelled a “silent killer”, and one in three with Chagas develops heart problems. He or she might suffer heart failure and even sudden death, if not diagnosed in time. A new statement by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Inter-American Cardiology Society, warns that the

disease is spreading through the US, Canada, Australia, Japan and Europe. These kissing bugs have appeared in the southern states of the US and in Spain and Italy. And, according to the study, there are some 42,000 individuals with Chagas in Spain alone, 300,000 in the US and up to six million people worldwide. Chagas disease is a parasitic infestation, and requires a parasite carrier, Trypanosoma cruzi. That is the “kiss bug”, which usually bites humans, dogs and other mammals at night, on the face and near the eyes and mouth. Currently more than 100 species of different triatomines are known, and 12 of them are transporters of the parasite that causes Chagas.

When they bite, the insects defaecate right next to the wound they have caused. The parasite is found in its faeces, and, when the wound is rubbed, the parasite penetrates and causes the infection. The majority of infected individuals do not show symptoms or, at most, suffer a swelling of the eyelids. Others experience nonspecific symptoms such as fever, fatigue, body pain, headache or skin rashes. In more serious cases, it can cause diarrhoea or vomiting. And, in a small percentage of cases, complications are found, leading to a “swelling of the heart” (cardiomegaly) or “swelling of the brain”, which can bring on death. The problem is not so much the initial phase of the infection, but, if left untreated, the disease becomes chronic. And, in the long term, up to 30% of those infected develop serious complications. The parasite can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, donation of organs and even from pregnant women to their children.

entertain migrants

SPAIN has been rated the most welcoming country for migrants, while Italy, Poland and Hungary were the lowest-ranked EU nations in a new survey. Eighteen nations took part in a Pew Research Centre study, which revealed that 86% of Spaniards would welcome migrants, fleeing persecution, into their country. These findings confirm the results of a separate survey, conducted by the European Commission’s Eurobarometer, which suggested that 83% of Spaniards would welcome refugees from war-torn, or impoverished, nations. This attitude has been evident, this year especially. For instance, Spain elected to accept 630 migrants from the humanitarian ship Aquarius, in June, after permission to dock in Italy or Malta had been refused.

The Pew Research Centre said the findings reflected extremely well on the positive mindset of the Spanish people. As stated, Italy, Poland and Hungary were the lowest-ranked EU nations in the survey, especially the latter, where 54% of those surveyed were against accepting the immigrants. The study comprised a survey of 1,000 people from each of the 18 nations, and the UK didn’t fare that badly, with 74% of those surveyed said they would support accepting refugees, fleeing violence and war.

Child’s car death sparks a warning about ‘tablets’

A GIRL aged three died from head injuries last Monday, after banging her head against the screen of the tablet she was playing on. The unnamed child was said to have been in a child’s car seat, strapped in with an “Isofix safety system. But her mother had driven into the back of a bus, which had stopped during the school run, in the Galicia region of Vilanove de Arosa. However, the system did not prevent the girl’s face from slamming into the tablet’s screen on impact. The mother, 26, told the Guardia Civil that she had, momentarily, lost visibility in the sun’s glare and didn’t realise the traffic ahead had slowed. Her little girl, who was airlifted to the Hospital

Clínico de Santiago after the crash, died later in the afternoon from head injuries. But the mother and another child suffered minor injuries and were soon discharged. The tragedy has raised fears over the safety of the common practice of allowing children to watch, or play on, hand-held screens, while travelling in the back of vehicles. The Guardia Civil Traffic Police Federation sent a reminder of the dangers in a tweet alongside a message of sympathy to the family, saying: “Watch your distance, stay focused on the road and don’t have loose objects in cars, to avoid tragedies like this. Our sincere condolences to the family. RIP.” In addition, occasional road-safety campaigns have warned that tablets should be well-secured during car journeys.

Another Brit stabbing triggers more violence

Built-in safety device to cut car-crash toll

TRAFFIC authorities in Spain are considering making it obligatory that speed-limiting technology, which already exists, is built in to all newly manufactured cars in a bid to reduce crash deaths on roads. Pere Navarro, leader of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), believes that the safety device, preventing a car from travelling above the speed limit, could prevent up to 400 fatalities a year, cutting serious accidents by at least 20%. But whether or not this technology becomes compulsory for new vehicles, Navarro says it is “probably a good idea” to review and increase the number of speed-limit signs, since the permitted maximum is not always clear. The “smart-speed” system, according to the DGT boss, which was the subject of a 2014 research project in Norway, was found to be the “most efficient” at saving lives. In fact, Navarro believes, “it could be the most important feature, after the

air-bag at doing so”. He is aware that road-crash deaths have been climbing steadily in Spain for the last four years, and he reveals that 77% of fatalities happen on secondary highways, rather than on motorways. Of all deaths recorded, 36% are caused by cars veering off the road, and 28% by head-on smashes. And even where the proximate cause of these tragedies is alcohol, drugs, fatigue or distraction, the speed of the vehicles involved affects the outcome. “The faster the cars are travelling, the worse the accident tends to be,” he stresses. These observations were made during the MAPFRE Foundation’s latest roadsafety conference, organised jointly by the European Council for Transport Safety, alongside the DGT.

Jesús Monclús, Head of Accident Prevention and Road Safety at highstreet insurance company MAPFRE, says the “smartspeed” system reads the limit signs on roads, and adjusts the car’s speed, accordingly, if it is travelling faster. It also prevents the vehicle from getting too close to the one in front, and even activates the brakes, if necessary. Navarro’s idea of making the system compulsory in new vehicles follows the data he released on this summer’s fatal accidents, spanning the busier traffic months of July and August. Some 259 people were killed on Spain’s roads, which was a 15% hike on the same period last summer. And, he reveals, speeding drivers played a large part in these tragic statistics.

No butts, it’s a fag-free beach

A BRITISH man, aged 24, was stabbed in Marbella as police investigate the possibility of a second “revenge” attack there in 10 days.

The victim was set upon in broad daylight as he left a hair salon in the upmarket, marina resort of Puerto Banús. His assailant jumped out of a car and, without saying a word, stabbed him in both legs. The man then jumped back in the vehicle

and made his escape. The unnamed, wounded Brit, who was taken to the Costa del Sol hospital for treatment, refused to make an official complaint, and would not talk with police, either. He had arrived in Marbella just two hours before the assault, and was thought to have been lured to the area where he was stabbed. A person who witnessed the attack, called the emergency services, and medics treated the man at the scene before taking him to hospital.

DEDICATED volunteers have picked up an astonishing total of 22,500 cigarette-ends from a Costa del Sol beach last weekend. The haul was removed from La Linea’s shoreline during World Clean Up Day, and Cadiz green group Ecologistas en Accion shared a photo of the butts, which were collected using empty water bottles. “One butt contaminates eight litres of water,” said the group on Facebook. “And we gathered 22,500 butts in three hours at La Linea de la Concepcion on the streets and the beach. “We have avoided

contaminating 180,000 litres of water. And do not forget that we need water to live!” The group, based in the

Campo de Gibraltar, had a message for smokers: “Do not throw your butts to the ground… don’t pollute; use bins and ashtrays!”

Trying it on with your customers? A REGIONAL government in Spain has proposed making fashion retailers charge a fee for customers, who want to try on their clothes. It is attempting to stamp out the unethical shoppers’ habit of checking items out for fit, and then buying them more cheaply online. María del Pilar del Olmo, Castilla y León’s Economy and Treasury Minister, made her views known at a recent Retail Industry Conference, after discussing it with Tourism, Trade and Industry Minister Reyes Maroto. The two women agreed to set up a new “Trade 4.0 Observatory”, in response to the challenges faced by the high street from the online market. Del Olmo says too many shoppers tend to try clothing on in physical outlets, and, having worked out what fits them and which size to buy, they hand them back, claiming they do not suit them. They then go online and buy them at a lower price. Fortunately, this is less of an issue with major high-street chains, whose brands are sold in-store only, or on their own websites, normally at a similar price. And they are often more expensive, when delivery charges are added. But it is more of a problem for individual boutiques, selling a variety of in-season brands, given that buyers may then be able to find them on sites such as ASOS and El Corte Inglés, with a lower price-tag. Those criticising Del Olmo’s idea point out that online prices may not differ greatly, giving little incentive for shoppers to hand back clothes at the changing-room door and buy them via the internet. And anyway, boutiques often sell “very individual” selections of their

various labels, making them hard to find elsewhere. If this is the case, shoppers are more likely to buy what they have just tried on, rather than risk the lack of availability elsewhere, or face limited or no price savings. It is not clear whether there is anything to be gained from charging for fitting, especially when shoppers decide to wait until the sales to buy the same item for less. And it is equally possible that consumers may decide not to even bother with the high street, if they have to pay without even buying the item they try on. But Del Olmo insists: “It’s just an idea.” She adds: “A major part of Spain’s identity is the existence of physical and, often, bespoke shops in town and city centres and, of course, frequently in villages, too; and the only way to ensure they survive is by seeking out innovative ideas. “This does not necessarily mean shops will definitely start charging for trying on. This was only an example.” Online straw polls in the Spanish media have so far shown that 91% of readers are against the idea of paying for fitting, believing consumers have the right to decide whether an item fits them properly before opting to buy. And, unfortunately for Del Olmo, only 7.37% of shoppers would support her idea.

Double trouble for bike riders

A TEENAGER had both his arms broken after being knocked off his bike by a car in Calle Pepe Floro, Icod de los Vinos, on Wednesday afternoon. The emergency services were alerted, and an ambulance was dispatched to the 14-year-old, whose medics, fortunately, were able to stabilise the boy without complications. They then transferred him to a

nearby hospital for more treatment, and Local Police are investigating the incident further. In another cycling accident later that afternoon, a 15-year-old local boy was in collision with a car in La Cuesta, La Laguna. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital with severe bruising, by the emergency ambulance, and was under observation yesterday (Thursday).

Brexit ‘Impasse’ warning dragging GBP/EUR down By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound has been on a rollercoaster ride over recent weeks, with steady gains against the euro and US dollar, giving way to heavy losses because of Brexit anxieties. Overall, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has remained at 1.11 euros over the last fortnight. The pairing rose to 1.12, but lost this on a fresh, Brexit scare. The situation has been better in the US, with the GBP/USD exchange rate rising from $1.29 to $1.31. As with the GBP/EUR rate, the pound hit a temporary high of $1.32. Brexit has been in the spotlight over the past couple of weeks, with optimism and pessimism about the UK’s exit from the EU causing pound gains and losses against the euro and US dollar. Hopes (and the pound)

initially rose, when EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier suggested concluding Brexit talks by November. However, the gloss came off and the pound fell, after an EU summit in Salzburg, as Theresa May’s “Chequers plan” for Brexit was rejected by EU leaders. The PM cemented the pound’s fall from grace, when she announced that Brexit talks had hit “an impasse”. The euro fell against the pound because of slowing Eurozone inflation and

continued caution from the European Central Bank (ECB), before rising after the Salzburg summit. For US dollar traders, the increasingly-acrimonious, US-China trading relationship hit the headlines, with both nations introducing new tariffs against each other. The US dollar fluctuated against the pound, as economists speculated about the potential damage done to US consumers and businesses. The next two weeks will

have limited poundinfluencing news; the latest major UK data are today’s GDP stats. These might boost demand for pound sterling, should they show a forecast-matching acceleration in economic growth levels. Beyond this, next week’s UK PMI figures could also affect the pound; a servicessector slowdown might devalue sterling. The latest high-impact, Eurozone data were today’s inflation-rate estimates, and these could

raise euro demand if they show a forecast-matching rise. Further ahead, Monday’s Eurozone unemployment rate reading might push the euro higher against the pound, if it shows a surprise reduction. US news included Wednesday’s Federal Reserve interest-rate decision. Fed officials might boost the dollar, if they hike interest rates from 2% to 2.25%. The US dollar could also rise against the pound on next Friday’s jobs-market data, which is expected to show a lower unemployment rate. THE number of judgements issued by the Courts of abusive clauses increased by 28.8% in the second quarter of the year. And, according to Spain’s General Council of Judicial Power (CGPJ), 96.9% of the 17,485 judgements released between 1st April and 30th June favoured the clients. In the second quarter of the year, there was a 17.3% decrease in the number of cases admitted, and a 31% increase in the number of cases resolved. The judgement rate, which measures the relationship between matters entered and resolved, exceeded 45% in that period, compared with 28.5% in the previous quarter. The number of judgements released in the second quarter by the Specialised

Courts’ (Clausula Suelo Courts) individual lawsuits on general conditions, included in financial agreements with mortgage guarantees, was 17,485, which represents a 28.8% increase compared with the 13,578 notified in the first quarter of 2018. These Specialised Courts, which became operational on 1st June 2017, sit on cases related, among others, to floor clauses, anticipated deadlines, default interests, mortgage settlement expenses or multi-currency mortgages. In total, these Courts have issued 40,839 judgements, of which 39,297 (97.30%) have been favourable to customers. In the second quarter of the year, the percentage of judgements was 96.9 per cent. That percentage was higher than 90% in the 17Autonomous Communities, but in Aragón, Canarias, Cataluña and Navarra it rose above 99%. Regarding Canary Islands, the frame made by CGPJ

Cashing in on car-hire firms

HIRE-CAR companies in Tenerife use around 16,000 vehicles a day, which generates some 5.5% revenue for the tourist sector. That adds up to an estimated 118,200,000 euros annually, according to sources from Tenerife’s travel and tourism sectors. Hire cars are the most common means of transport for tourists moving around the islands, especially Tenerife, where the average holiday-maker will hire a vehicle for 5-10 days, at a cost of around 24 euros daily. Regular hire-car tourists are generally Spanish, French and Italians.

Drowning In Plastic TV Choice

The Cry

Sunday 30th September, BBC1, 21.00

Monday 1st October, BBC1, 20.30

Joanna (Jenna Coleman) and Alistair (Ewen Leslie) are a young couple forced to face unthinkable circumstances under the white light of public scrutiny, changing their lives and their relationship forever. Joanna and Alistair travel from Scotland to Australia with their baby son Noah. They’re going to Melbourne to see Alistair’s mother Elizabeth and to fight for custody of Alistair’s 14 year-old daughter Chloe, from his previous marriage to Alexandra. Joanna is struggling with life as a new mum and the flight to Melbourne is a huge additional strain on her. Noah cries the whole way, to the very apparent dismay of their fellow travellers. Exhausted and emotional from the journey the couple finally arrive in Australia, where unforeseen events change their lives forever.

Our blue planet is facing one its biggest threats in human history. Trillions of pieces of plastic are choking the very lifeblood of our earth, and every marine animal from the smallest plankton to the largest of mammals - is being affected. But can we turn back this growing plastic tide before it is too late? In this 90-minute special wildlife biologist Liz Bonnin visits scientists working at the cutting edge of plastics research. She will work with some of the world’s leading marine biologists and campaigners to discover the true dangers of plastic in our oceans and what it means for the future of all life on our planet, including for us. Liz travels 10,000 miles to a remote island off the coast of Australia which is the nesting site for a population of seabirds: Flesh Footed Shearwaters. Newly-hatched chicks are unable to regurgitate effectively, so they are filling up on deadly plastic. In America she joins an emergency mission to save an entangled grey seal pup found in some of the world’s busiest fishing areas, and visits the Coral Triangle that stretches from Papua New Guinea to the Solomon Islands to find out more from top coral scientists trying to work out why plastic is so lethal to the reefs, a fragile ecosystem that contain 25 percent of all marine life. Liz learns that the world’s biggest rivers have been turned into huge plastic arteries, transporting 50 percent of all plastic that arrives in the ocean. She travels to Indonesia - where she watches a horrifying raft of plastic rubbish travel down one of the main rivers, the Citarum. Here, 60 percent of fish species have died, meaning that fishermen are now forced to collect plastic to sell instead of fish. With the world only now waking up to this emerging crisis, this film will look at whether scientists have found any solutions. Liz meets the 24 year-old inventor of a monumental 600-metre construction that will travel across the ocean’s ‘garbage patches’, collecting millions of pieces of plastic pollution. Liz also meets a local environmental campaigner who is working with volunteers and the Indonesian army to clean up the worst affected areas, and a young entrepreneur who has invented an alternative to plastic packaging made from seaweed. Plastic in our oceans is one of the greatest environmental challenges of our time and this film hopes to add to the urgent and vitally important debate of how to solve this global crisis.

Saturday 29th September, ITV1, 20.35

Tonight’s episode sees the competition reach a new level as the dramatic Six Chair Challenge returns, promising some amazing performances alongside some agonising decisions for the judges, as they must each decide on the final six acts they will take through to their Judge’s House. In the first of three special Six Chair Challenge episodes, the stakes are high as the acts perform individually and their judge then has to decide, there and then in front of the audience, if they want the act to take one of the six seats on stage – each one representing a place at Judges’ Houses. However, even if they win a seat, the contestants face an anxious wait as no one is safe until the last person in each category has sung. Each judge is able to change their mind at any point swapping an act already through with someone else who comes on and out-performs them. This year each of our judges has one guaranteed safe seat to give away in the Six Chair Challenge. If the judge likes an act enough, and they definitely want to see them at judges houses they’ll press a golden X and give that act a safe seat. The judge can only press this for an act in their own category and this means the act cannot be swapped out of their chair. Who will have what it takes to keep hold of their seat and be one step closer to a coveted place in the lives shows?

Bargain Hunt BBC1, 12.15

www.canarianweekly.com 28th September - 4th October 2018

Bargain Hunt is being broadcast on BBC One Daytime as part of this year’s BBC Music Day, an annual celebration of the power of music to change lives. In today’s Bargain Hunt special headlining are Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker and The Happy Monday’s Mark ‘Bez’ Berry, together with team mates Candida Doyle and Rowetta Satchell. Set in the tranquil surroundings of the Kent County showground, these trail blazers from the 80s and 90s’ music scene have £300, two experts and an hour to buy three items to take to auction. Their aim: to raise money for charity. And keeping the music going is presenter Charlie Ross who pays homage to bands like Oasis and Queen at a legendary recording studio in Wales. This tuneful Bargain Hunt extravaganza looks like being a pop pickers’ paradise until one team falls from grace and everything ends up very rock ‘n’ roll. Music Day is a pan-BBC initiative across television, radio and online features live music events and performances across the UK involving famous musicians, choirs and local community music groups.

Jill Douglas introduces live coverage of the climax to the elite men’s road race on an unforgiving 265km course, over the mighty mountains of Austria’s Tyrol region. The race includes nearly 5,000m of climbing, culminating in a final ascent along the so-called Highway to Höll, with ramps of 25 percent. It’s a course which should suit Great Britain’s highly talented twins Simon and Adam Yates. Seven years on from Mark Cavendish’s world title in Copenhagen, could there be another British winner in Austria? Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali, winner of the Tour de France in 2014, is among the pre-race favourites, along with evergreen Spaniard Alejandro Valverde. Commentary comes from Simon Brotherton, Chris Boardman and Rochelle Gilmore.

Black Earth Rising

Kate (Michaela Coel) and Michael (John Goodman) finish their work on Alice’s (Noma Dumezwini) case in France but are shocked when an indicted Rwandan and Congolese war criminal, Patrice Ganimana (Tyrone Huggins), implicated in the Genocide, arrives in the UK. Galvanised by the chance to prosecute him, Michael is unsettled to learn that an old rival is handling his defence. Meanwhile this new arrival prompts Alice Munezero to delay her own return to Rwanda. As difficulties multiply for an extradition of Ganimana to the International Criminal Court, Kate and Michael’s relationship begins to fray.

Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road Adventure e c i o h ITV1, 21.00 c

This final episode sees Joanna Lumley travel across the post-Soviet, Central Asian states of Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, the heartland of the Silk Road. Almost never seen on television, this littleknown corner of the world is blessed with hyperbole-defying scenery mighty mountains and glittering cities - that have played host to centuries of war, trade, guts, glory and espionage. Joanna’s journey begins in northwest Uzbekistan’s Kyzl-Kum desert, where she meets some Bactrian camels and visits a windswept 2500-year-old Silk Road fortress called Ayaz Kala. Following in the footsteps of old trading caravans, she travels to Khiva, an ancient desert citadel ringed by formidable adobe walls. Here Joanna meets Shokir, a man whose family have made Khiva’s distinctive sheepskin chugirma hats for centuries, and witnesses a special chugirma dance. Whilst walking through the town’s dusty streets, she tells the story of how Khiva was famous as a slaving town well into the 19th century.

meet largarto’s head chef

Samuel Hernández VENTURE Restaurants are very proud of their new Head Chef at Lagarto Brasserie, and quite rightly so.

He has moved from Char, where he had been since its opening, three years ago. Samuel Hernández delighted customers with his fine detail and innovative techniques, giving Char a fierce following of loyal customers looking for the ultimate gastronomic experience, and helping the restaurant receive a nomination for the best steak house in the Canary Islands! Samuel works very closely with the local council, holding various, cooking master-classes, and he also represented Tenerife at Madrid Fusion, where he won first prize for best Tapa! He is now very excited to take on his next Venture, leading the kitchen at their sister restaurant, also in La Caleta, Lagarto Brasserie! We spent a little bit of time with Samuel, to find out more behind this culinary master. CW: When did you know you wanted to be a chef? SH: I’ve always had a passion for cooking. 16 years ago, when I finished high school, I started in the gastronomic academy, and my love for cooking grew. CW: What is your favourite food memory? SH: One of my favourite

food memories is my grandfather cooking us a typical Canarian dish of goat meat in salsa. CW: How do you get your inspiration? SH: My inspiration comes from learning. I never stop studying, and love to constantly develop new cooking methods and techniques. CW: What is your favourite piece of kitchen equipment, or gadget? SH: Fire! But I also loved working with the Josper Oven in Char; it’s amazing! CW: Best piece of advice you would give a home enthusiast? SH: My advice is to never be afraid of preparing any dish. With every mistake you make, you also learn. CW: Best cooking tip for an aspiring chef, just getting into the business? SH: Study as much as

you can, read books and research the internet. It is a hard business, but it’s also a beautiful and comforting profession. CW: Who in the food world do you most admire? SH: Most definitely Ferran Adriá. He’s a Spanish chef from Catalonia, and is considered to be one of the best chefs in the world. CW: What do you like to eat when you’re at home? SH: I’m a simple person; I like to cook pasta. CW: What is your proudest chef moment? SH: When I was a part of Madrid Fusion, representing Tenerife. CW: One last question; if you had one final meal, what would it be? SH: For sure, it would be a Canarian dish; for example, pork cheek with sweet, Lanzarote white wine and vanilla - delicious!

Top culinary chefs galore, and super food to savour VISITORS to the Culinaria 2018 event, launched on Tuesday (2nd Oct) in Adeje, will see some of gastronomy’s top Spanish, Michelinstarred chefs over the coming days. It is being organised by Acyre Canarias (the association of Canarian chefs and pastry-makers) in partnership with Adeje Council, Tenerife Cabildo and the Regional Government, and the 2,700 places available for events in the busy threeday calendar are already booked. Association President Pablo Pastor, told press at the inauguration: “Expectations have been superseded.” He thanked everyone for taking part, as well as the sponsors and supporting institutional bodies, adding that he hoped the event would also encourage hotels and restaurants. Acyre Vice-President Juan Carlos Clemente said: “Culinaria 2018 is committed to the use of local produce,” adding that bringing together top chefs from the islands and outside should add to the promotion of that produce. For Adeje, Economic Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín em-

phasised the importance of gastronomy in a first-class tourism destination such as Costa Adeje. “The Town Hall recognises that gastronomy is a fundamentally-important part of the tourism offer, complementing the ‘sun, sea and beach’ attractions.” He encouraged people to continue organising events such as this one, “where training and the presence of recognised professionals improves the quality and excellence of the service”. He said there was an everincreasing demand for good, local produce, and, of course, an emphasis on local gas-

tronomy also creates more employment in the sector. For his part, Cabildo Tourism Councillor Alberto Barnabé Teja congratulated the private sector for organising the event. “There are millions of visitors who have yet to discover our local gastronomy and produce, so there is still a lot of work to do,” he said. “The event’s slogan, ‘El turismo que se come’ (tourism you can eat) is an excellent choice, the challenge being to convert tourists through their palate.” Councillor Barnabé Teja added: “In Tenerife, we have 42 million overnight stays, which also means breakfast,

lunches and dinners, a year. That’s 126 million chances to feed our tourists, so it’s a responsibility and an opportunity.” Narvay Quintero Castañeda, Regional Agriculture Minister, said they were looking forward to three intense days of work, with local produce at the core of the event. “It’s something we see as extremely positive, because we recognise that linking this to a primary sector, such as tourism and relevant other sectors, has far-reaching benefits, as we can sell fresh produce locally,” he added. During the inauguration, a

new television programme, “El Chef Viajero” (the travelling chef), was also unveiled. The show, to be broadcast in the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain, as well as to a number of other European countries, will feature Spanish chefs, travelling to the various Canary Islands in search of local, gastronomic delights. During the Culinaria 2018 three days, held in the CDTCA in Adeje, there will be talks, workshops and demonstrations. Those taking part include Miguel Navarro, restaurant Es Fum (Mallorca), 1 Michelin*, Andrea Bernardi and Fernanda Fuentes, Restaurant Nub (Tenerife) 1 Michelin*, Oliver Peña, Restaurant Enigma (Barcelona) 1 Michelin*, Erlantz Gorostiza, Restaurant MB Abama (Tenerife) 2 Michelin*, 2 Repsol Suns, Susi Díaz, Restaurant La Finca (Elche) 1 Michelin*, 2 Repsol Suns, Javier Aguiar, Restaurant Tickets (Barcelona) 1 Michelin*, Juan Carlos Padrón and Jonathan Padrón, Restaurant El Rincón de Juan Carlos. (Tenerife) 1 Michelin*, 2 Repsol Suns. And the full programme is available online at: http:// acyrecanarias.es/culinaria/.

What is cellulite? By kaizen wellness & Beauty WHAT is cellulite, and what is the correct definition that explains the condition? Well, cellulite is a skin disorder that occurs in over 90% of women after puberty, and is characterised by lumpy skin and dimples. It is caused by irregular, subcutaneous fat deposits. Cellulite is usually found on thighs, bums, legs and the abdomen, and the skin resembles that of an orange peel. Almost all women have it, whether they are fat or slim, young or old, and even if they work out. Many women find it quite disturbing, as the number and shape of the typical dimples or hollows on the skin can vary from woman to woman. Most of

these are oval-shaped, and are present on the bottom of the buttocks and on top of the thighs. The skin in these areas is comparatively softer than the rest of the body. Losing elasticity of the skin continues to increase with age. Of course, fear of cellulite shouldn’t be factored in to your decision to reach a healthy weight. Not everyone who loses weight will end up with

cellulite. But if you have cellulite before you slim down, there is no guarantee that weight loss will make it disappear. It is well-known that skin problems and appearances have a significant impact on a person's selfesteem. This is the reason women resent the look of cellulite on their bodies. It also has a significant social and emotional impact on women, especially

when their bodies are exposed to others, such as on the beach. Sometimes, they may feel shame during social and intimate moments, which has a negative impact on their daily lives. Prevention An active lifestyle and healthy diet may help you to minimise the appearance of cellulite, but it may not prevent it, completely. In addition, if you maintain a healthy

body weight, you may be able to minimise the severity of dimpling that shows up on your thighs or abdomen. Muscle-toning exercises for the thighs and abdomen may also help to shape the areas where cellulite appears, making it less noticeable. If you are overweight, losing weight may help, but not always. In some people, weight loss helps to prevent or minimise the

appearance of cellulite. But in others, losing weight can actually cause the condition to become more noticeable. Loose skin, which often presents itself after significant weight loss, can result in the cellulite being more noticeable. Deeptissue massage can break up the fat deposits and eliminate toxins, and lymphatic drainage may assist in removing oedema and accumulated fluid in cellulite-affected areas. Hopefully, after reading this article, you will better understand the question: “What is cellulite?”. Do you still have a question about cellulite, or anticellulite treatments? Making sure you are covered, when buying a second-hand car By Emma

from Motorworld

RECENTLY, we've had customers affected by issues that can arise after the purchase of second-hand cars, where they didn't have any paperwork for them, or where the cars have even been impounded by the police. We are going to highlight the points that buyers should be very aware of when buying secondhand cars or bikes, regardless of whether they be from individuals or businesses. The first thing to remember is that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is! We all know about buying a car with an embargo on it, or with outstanding finance, but how does it work if you buy a car from a third party, who isn't the legal owner of the vehicle, and the actual

owner doesn’t get paid? This is what we are going to clarify. The name of the registered keeper is shown on the permiso de circulación, and on the Tráfico data base. This is the only legallyregistered owner, unless you can prove that you have paid the registered keeper for the car, and the transfer paperwork is pending. Problems often arise when you buy a car through a third party, whether it be a dealer or an individual, because, if you pay the third party, you are not the legal owner of the car. This is when the police can impound the car if the registered keeper notifies them that the car has been “stolen”, or has been sold without them receiving payment, or without their permission. In this case, the purchaser would be left without the car and the monies paid, and you would need to reclaim the payment from the

third party whom you paid, who, in many cases, either didn't have the authority to sell, and/or does not have the money to reimburse you. Let's look at a few scenarios: You check the paperwork, and the registered keeper isn't the person from whom you are buying the car: You are, in fact, buying the car from a third party. Ask questions such as: is the third party authorised to sell said vehicle? If they are a dealer, selling the car on behalf of the owner, they would be required, by law, to possess a written and signed document stating just that, or they should be able to put you in contact directly with the owner, for you to deal with them. If they are an individual, then the same rules apply, and they would need to be able to prove that they have permission to sell the car. The scenarios to

consider are perhaps husband/wife possibly estranged, or son/ daughter where parent is old/incapacitated, or perhaps has died. You've checked that the seller has written permission: In this case, you are able to go ahead and purchase the car without any problems, as long as any paperwork you are given is signed by the owner, and not the third party selling the car, and providing you have checked the car for debts. The seller cannot provide proof that they have the authorisation to sell the car, but you purchase the car anyway: In this case, if the registered keeper reclaims the car because of non-payment, then you, as the buyer, could be left without both the car and the monies paid. You would have to denounce the third party whom you paid, in an attempt to reclaim the monies. This, as

we all know, takes a long time, and, in the meantime, you are carless and out of pocket. How do you make sure you are safe? Always ask as many questions as needed until you feel 100% secure that the car is available for sale by an authorised person, or the owner. You would need to make sure that the name on the invoice, if buying from a dealer, or the name on the

contract of purchasesale, if buying from an individual, matches the name on the permiso de circulación. Never purchase a vehicle if the seller cannot prove he or she is the legal owner, or authorised. It is impossible to cover all scenarios, but we have highlighted some of the most common in order to try to help safeguard the buyer. As always, it's buyer beware.

CD Tenerife

Tenerife still left waiting THE biggest news for Tenerife before this clash was the re-appointment of Jose Luis Oltra as head coach, back for his second spell in charge. And how they need his inspiration after failing to gain their first win of the season at the El Arcángel stadium on Saturday night. Tenerife went ahead with their only on-target shot of the first half, but, in fairness, they were forced to play most the second with just 10 men. The Andalusians took advantage of their numerical superiority in the last half-hour following the dismissal of Luis Pérez. And, after missing a penalty five minutes from time, they rescued a point with a spectacular goal from Aguado in the 91st minute. Córdoba coach Sandoval made eight changes to his starting XI after their last league game, while new Tenerife coach Oltra opted to leave Suso on the bench in his first match in charge of the team, this time around. With little fluency in open play, Córdoba had their best chances with setpieces. In the 30th minute, Tenerife keeper Dani Hernández fisted the ball

Córdoba 1 CD Tenerife 1

away from a Jaime Romero free-kick, and the rebound was skied into the stands by Blati. The home side increased their pressure, and their best efforts came from Piovaccari in the stifling, evening heat. In the final minute of the first half, Piovaccari again had an excellent chance. The veteran Italian had a shot from inside the area, which was pushed away by Hernández for a corner. Then, in time added on, Tenerife took full advantage of a foul in the Córdoba half, and Naranjo launched the ball masterfully to surprise the home side’s young keeper, Alberto González, making

his debut. For once, luck was on Tenerife’s side because the ball struck the crossbar and bounced in to give Tenerife a welcome half-time lead. Tenerife survived at the start of the second half, when Jaime Romero had a goal ruled out for offside, but a great double save from González from a Bryan Acosta shot denied the visitors, and he then thwarted Tenerife again in the 57th minute. But it all went sour for Tenerife on the hour, when Luis Perez was booked for a foul on Piovaccari, and was sent off for his second yellow card. Coach Oltra made an instant change by bringing

Football

on Nano to assist Raúl Cámara at the back, to protect their slim lead. The home team pushed for an equaliser and Jovanovic came close, but Tenerife nearly wrapped up their first win of the season on the counter-attack, via Acosta, but to no avail. The referee awarded Córdoba a penalty in the 85th minute after Piovaccari was brought down in the box, but it was saved brilliantly by Dani Hernández, who guessed which way to go, correctly. It looked as though Tenerife and new coach Oltra were heading for their first victory of the season. But it was not to be,

because Córdoba midfielder Alvaro Aguado hit an unstoppable, 25-yard volley in the 93rd minute, to earn them a share of the points. The result left neither side with any joy, Tenerife sitting fourth from bottom of the table, and their hosts last. The six-pointer phrase can be over-used, but even at this early stage of the season, it felt as though spectators had just witnessed one. Yet Tenerife’s morale is high, following the reappointment of Oltra, and, hopefully, the difference will be seen at home against Cádiz tomorrow (Saturday).

Football

worth £200m, Fit Fergie’s back Pogba’s in the old routine says angry Mourinho SIR Alex Ferguson walked into the directors’ box with a huge grin on his face, and, almost sheepishly, acknowledged the crowd’s ovation with a wave of the hand. Sir Alex, who has recovered fully from brain surgery, knows just how much he is loved at Manchester United, and the adulation was here again, lavished on him from all four corners of Old Trafford. “One of our own”’ said match-day announcer Alan Keegan. “Without question, one of the greatest figures in Manchester United’s

140-year history. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, give the warmest of Old Trafford welcomes to Sir Alex Ferguson!” It has been a worrying time since Ferguson was taken ill at home in Wilmslow,

and many were concerned that he might never be seen again at the club where he enjoyed unprecedented success, for more than 25 years. The former United manager, suited and booted as ever, looked more like his old self as he raised his hands to acknowledge the acclaim. For all his trophies, this was his finest success, and he revealed in an interview given earlier to MUTV that he had invited the doctors from Macclesfield General and Salford Royal hospitals, who helped save his life. “‘I thought it was the right thing to do,” he said. “It’s really good to be back. It’s been a long journey. but I’m doing what my son and the doctors tell me.”

PAUL Pogba has been stripped of his Manchester United captaincy duties after telling Jose Mourinho he wants to join Barcelona. And the manager, determined to win their ongoing feud, insists he will release the France midfielder… for a worldrecord £200m! He has sacked Pogba from his job as stand-in captain because, he believes, it is no longer acceptable for a player pushing for a move to wear the armband. The squad were told of the decision at their Carrington training base, hours before United’s shock, Carabao Cup defeat by Derby on penalties, on Tuesday. Pogba watched from the Old Trafford stands as his team-mates were hit by a

giant-killing, and Barcelona are keen to see him line-up with them. He attracted heavy interest from the La Liga champions during the summer transfer window, amid reports of his fractious relationship with Mourinho. Barcelona may have to wait until next summer to claim the Frenchman, but will they then be prepared to pay the asking price, which is £2m above the current record, paid to the Spanish club by Paris St Germain for Brazilian forward Neymar?

A golfing bonanza for cancer charity THREE-TIME world darts champion John Lowe held his annual Charity Golf Classic in Tenerife for the 14th consecutive year last Saturday, again sponsored by Aberdeen Property Leasing. A record 33 teams took part on the Amarilla golf course, in an event recognised as being one of the best tournaments of the year. Pink was the order of the day, with all proceeds going to the AMATE cancer charity, and a whopping sum of 10,600 euros was raised through the golf fees, plus sponsorship, raffles and an auction. Entertainment was courtesy of Spencer Robson and Ged Boulton, with Simon Shovlar hosting the event and Roscoe, from Power ON FM, handling the auction. Handy-Andy steals show

THE Gentlemen’s trebles saw highlycompetitive darts thrown by all at Picasso’s Pool Bar last Friday.

But the two teams who came through, deservedly, were Richard, Luc and Andy, from Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who will line up against Sam Steve and Joe from Suters Bar in the final. Division 2 Gents saw Tony,

Steve and Dave, representing Waterfall, win on their home turf to clash with The Loch-In Bulleyes’ trio of Andy, Kev and Colin. Unfortunately for the hosts, Andy, who hit a maximum, displayed awesome finish-

ing to be acclaimed star of the night. Congratulations to Ourplace Playgirls T, Julie and Kirsty, who took advantage of their home throw and will meet Gio, Anne and Karen in the ladies’ competition final.

Some interesting darts await on Finals’ Night, and, that apart, a big thanks to all who took part and hosted the events. The finals take place on Friday, 2nd November @ Camp Nauta. 8pm start.
