Cont. from Front

Missing Scot hasn’t even kept in touch with family Alan Jeffrey, 25, was supposed to have travelled home with his girlfriend on 10th June, after their holiday here. But he told her he was going to Marbella with some friends, instead, so she returned to Scotland on her own. Mr Jeffrey, from Wishaw, near Motherwell, who was reported missing to Police Scotland on 26th June, has not been in touch with his family, which, officers were told, was a rare occurrence. He is white, around 5ft 10in, with a stocky build and short, receding, brown hair. And because of the lengthy period, as well as some of the information they have received, police say they cannot rule out that he may have come to harm. Inspector Keith Campbell said: “While it may seem an unusual move for

police in Scotland to be investigating a person missing in Spain, we are liaising with the authorities there, and with Europol. “All of Alan’s family, friends and associates are here in Scotland, and he was reported missing here. “A number of officers have been working on this inquiry for some time. But it has been challenging, because we haven’t received much information so far, which is why we are now appealing to the public for their help.” The Inspector added: “We remain focused on tracing him, safe and well. If Alan is reading this appeal, we ask him to get in touch with his family, because they are very concerned. “I would ask anyone who may have information, in relation to this inquiry, to contact the police in Scotland, or in Tenerife.”

Brave victim is stabbed by cowardly knifeman

Baby dies after dad locks her in his car POLICE arrested the father of a 21-month-old baby, who died after being locked for hours inside a parked car in the Hortaleza district of Madrid.

The Spaniard, allegedly, forgot to drop the little girl off at her nursery on his way to work on Wednesday morning. When the child’s mother went to collect her daughter at 3pm, nursery staff told her she hadn’t arrived that morning. Reports say the mother quickly found the parked car, with her daughter unconscious inside. She unlocked it with her set of keys, as an ambulance and paramedics also arrived on the scene. But

He was entering the underground car park in Calle Caldrea, in front of the Bahia de Arona building, with his wife and son at 11.15pm, when the assault took place. According to his wife, the two men demanded money from her husband. One of them was positioned behind him, and the other man was in front. The attacker at the rear, who had the knife, tried to snatch a gold chain from around his neck. But the husband, who resisted strongly, was stabbed in the left side of his body near the ribs, but, bravely, refused to part with any cash.

The attempted robbery with violence was committed by two North Africans, each around 1.8 metres (5ft 9ins) in height, and wearing floral shirts. They fled, empty-handed, towards Avenida Juan Carlos, while their victim and his family headed towards the Los Cristianos medical centre, where he told staff what had happened. National Police were informed and are searching for the cowardly attackers, as well as opening an investigation. They are also appealing for possible witnesses to come forward if they saw the attack. The injured husband was transferred to Hospiten Sur, where he was further stabilised, and then taken to Candelaria Hospital, where he had an operation on Wednesday to fix his injuries.

despite administering 45 minutes of CPR, the medics were unable to resuscitate the tragic child.

Police will be interviewing the shocked father, who could face charges of reckless homicide.

A smoke-filled penalty for brave fire-fighters SIX fire-fighters were treated for smoke inhalation during the early hours of last Friday, as they fought to extinguish a blaze which seemed out of control.

A HINDU man, aged 42, was assaulted by two men, one carrying a knife, on Sunday night in Los Cristianos.

A 65-year-old woman also received medical attention, but, fortunately, nobody needed hospital attention. The blaze began in a building just before 3am, in the La Laguna municipality, and several fire engines, manned by fire-fighters,

were dispatched to the scene by the emergency services. On arrival, they discovered that the fire had started in the garage, so they got to work promptly, extinguishing the flames. Other fight-fighters, alongside the police, evacuated residents from the building, but some people were already on the roof, trying to avoid the flames. Fire-fighters, who reported that the blaze began in the car park underneath the building, counted nine vehicles, damaged and burned out, on one floor, while a further 11 cars and

three motorbikes suffered heat-damage on the floor above. Having extinguished the blaze, fire-fighters noticed that there was damage to the building’s structure. That meant residents were forced to look for alternative accommodation while the local council further investigated the building, to make sure it was safe for their return. Police have been investigating why and how the blaze began, and forensic officers believe it could have been down to thieves being negligent while stealing petrol.

Raising a big stink! STAFF at the Gran Canaria Sur Ecopark have been busy making compost, from thousands of tons of vegetable waste and organic matter.

The island Cabildo’s intention is to have the compost distributed, free of charge, to farmers and town halls across the island. But there’s a problem, because the Cabildo has been waiting nine months for a green light from the Canarian Government’s

Agriculture Ministry, so that it can be spread around. It must be frustrating for all concerned, especially as

several municipalities and farmers across the island have expressed an interest in acquiring some of this neglected pile of compost.

THE University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) has scored a first, by appearing in the 2019 edition of the Times Higher Education World Rankings. The list includes 38 Spanish academic institutions, from a total of 80 universities in Spain. The world rankings, which puts the university at No.18 in the Spanish selections, highlights the ULPGC’s qualities, especially for teaching. Phil Baty, Editorial Director of the Times Higher Education, said: “The increase in Spanish representation in the 2019 schedule reflects that these universities are taking our world rankings more seriously.” Other Spanish universities appearing for the first time in this list, together with the ULPGC, are those in the Balearic Islands, as well as Jaume I and Miguel Hernandez de Elche, as well as Oberta de Cataluña. This ranking, based on the analysis of 1,258 worldwide academies, is headed by Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The top three Spanish universities, all in Barcelona, are: Pompeu Fabra (ranked 135), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (145) and the University of Barcelona (203). Company must spill the beans to Council TENERIFE’S Santa Cruz Council has opened a formal investigation into the Emmasa Company’s technical problems over the treatment of purified water, which caused a spill in La Hondura. Damaso Arteaga, the fourth Deputy Mayor and Public Services Councillor, said Emmasa had already been requested to provide written information so the Council could learn more about the nature and scope of this incident. The Council also wants to know the exact duration of the spill, the estimated flow and the possible effects. Arteaga issued a statement, saying he believed the solution involved the expansion work, set to be carried out by the Waste-

water Treatment Plant of Buenos Aires. It was awarded the contract by the Canarian Government recently, but scheduled works are yet to begin. Arteaga said this sewage spill was not an exclusive problem for Santa Cruz, since water from two other municipalities also came to the sewage treatment plant. He added that there was insufficient capacity when the plant was first built. But he believes the remedial work must now be carried out urgently, and within the deadlines of the contract. The City Council said the waters discharged in La Hondura, pending the start of the WWTP expansion works, were pretreated and had the control and authorisation of the Canarian Ministry of Environment, to guarantee compliance with the parameters required by law.

analysis and knowledge of higher education. In addition, it is the only table of global university performance which judges the main missions of academia: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and

international perspectives. These calculations of classifications were audited by the Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) company, which makes it the only global university ranking that has independent scrutiny.

Whale of a time for the Canaries

ANOTHER whale has decided to visit the shores of the Canary Islands, this time a 20-metre-long blue whale, just off the Lanzarote coast. It is already a known fact that we are surrounded by many whale species in the seas around us, because resident whales and dolphins are an attraction for thousands of tourists every year. Only a few weeks ago, a huge humpback whale

arrived near the Guaza mountain, even though it was said to be in poor health, and on its way towards Los Gigantes. To see these special animals in their own habitat leaves locals and tourist alike in total amazement; so amazed that some sightings spread across social media like wildfire, including pictures of the blue whale that decided to make his presence known by the Lanzarote

shores. Recordings of this magnificent mammal have gone viral, with the narrator in the video saying that it isn’t unusual to see these mammals in the surrounding waters of the archipelago. True, but what is unusual is that they seem to be coming closer and closer to the coast. This curious mammal made his appearance off the coast of Playa Grande, in Puerto del Carmen.

Miss Sur candidates looking pretty good

THE 22 Miss Sur title aspirants were presented to the press and public last Friday, in Siam Park’s new Coco Beach zone. Accompanying the women were Adeje Cultural Councillor Adolfo Alonso, and Miss Sur organiser Sandro Pérgola. For the seventh consecutive year, the gala takes place in Adeje, in the Plaza de España, on 19th October at 9.30pm (free entry), as

part of the local patronal festivals. Both Councillor Alonso and the organisers stress that this is not simply a beauty contest, because competitors must also take the opportunity to develop skills in communication, wellness and image projection, along with team work and confidencebuilding. Candidates for this popular event are: Laura Sánchez, Darya Gorbachyova, Damaris Cabrera, Belén Espinosa, Cathaysa Molowny, Keilly Rangel, Rosalva Morales,

Lauren Pérez, Aroa Álvarez, Atteneri Chico, Jennifer Saumell, Julia Schiemann, Sara Hernández, Caroline Díaz, Yanira Fumero, Charlotte Harrison, Nigar Huseynli, Esmeralda Padilla, Jennifer Cabrera, Yarella Cerdá, Corald Vargas and Altea Limongelli. The Miss Sur event is backed by private sponsors, as well as the Tenerife South Town Halls of Adeje, Arona, Santiago del Teide, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel de Abona, Arico, Arafo, Fasnia, Güimar and Candelaria.

Residents’ false alarm as car engine explodes STARTLED residents in Las Galletas were awoken on Tuesday to an explosion from a car parked in the street. The big bang was heard at around 6.30am, and the noise appeared to have come from Calle de la Paz, the main road into the town. Locals informed the emergency services rapidly, and, once the call was received, fire-engines and their

crews were dispatched. Fire-fighters began extinguishing the flames, while the Local Police proceeded with traffic control. Fortunately, there were no casualties, and, because the offending car was parked away from domestic homes, residents did not need to be evacuated. Local Police have reassured neighbours in the surrounding area that the explosion was a genuine accident, caused by a poor contact in the vehicle’s engine.

Hiker takes wrong path!

Restaurant hit by blaze

A BLAZE caused serious damage to a restaurant in the La Laguna area of Valle Tabares in the early hours of last Sunday.

By the time firefighters arrived, the restaurant was already engulfed in flames, which appeared to have started in the annexed cabin and then spread to the whole premises. Fortunately, there was no one inside the restaurant, but the material damage to the property is reported to be considerable.

Cyclists collide with cars

A TENERIFE cyclist was seriously injured last Saturday morning when he collided with a vehicle at the Bosquito roundabout in San Antonio, La Orotava. The 40-year-old, who suffered severe chest injuries, was transferred, immediately, to nearby Hospiten Bellevue, in Santa Cruz. Earlier, the same morning, there was another cycling accident, when a 49-year-old man, also involved in a car collision in the Ramblas, Santa Cruz, was taken to Candelaria Hospital with arm injuries.

Dolphin’s ideal saviour

LORO Parque officials have offered to help rescue a dolphin, which was left stranded, and in a poor state, at a Japanese zoo. The Parque spoke out on its Twitter account after several people, on social media, criticised the look of the poor animal. And the dolphin isn’t alone, because other animals have also been abandoned, together with penguins, fish and reptiles, which all need a saviour. Loro Park announced on its Twitter account that it had contacted WAZA, The World Association of Zoos, to gather information about how, together, they could form a plan of action for relocating the animals, as well as looking after them until that happens.

Helicopter rescues swimmer

TENERIFE Emergency Services were called to Charco de La Laja’s swimming area in San Juan de la Rambla, where a German woman was reported to be in difficulty.

Her husband attempted to help her by throwing a float towards his wife. But it was left to the emergency helicopter crew to rescue the woman and transfer her to the heli-pad at La Guancha Medical Centre, where she received first aid. The 32-year-old swimmer is reported to have fully recovered, with only a few scratches to remind her of the great escape.

A GERMAN hiker was rescued by an emergency helicopter, after falling into a barranca in a difficult area of Guimar.

The 48-year-old German was on a hiking expedition in a place known as “the path of windows”.

After a call had been made to the emergency services, a team of fire-fighters set out to find him. Once they had located him, a helicopter arrived at the scene swiftly, and one of the crew was lowered to reach the victim, because of the area’s precarious nature. The injured man was assessed and given first-

aid, and, once stabilised, he was then winched on to the helicopter and transferred to the North airport. When the party arrived at Los Rodeos, an ambulance was waiting, and the victim was diagnosed as having head injuries, as well as internal bruising. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital for observation.

Former terror group ETA say a big farewell to arms THE French Prime Minister travelled to Madrid on Monday to arrange the formal handover of thousands of items, seized from Basque nationalist terror group ETA. Edouard Phillippe made the journey to speak with Spanish officials about some 7,000 documents, arms and other material, while in the capital. He was joined by French Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet and officials from the country’s General Direc-

torate of Internal Security (DGSI). French Government sources said it was hoped the transfer would allow Spanish authorities to continue investigating the group, and open up new lines of inquiry. The items were handed over at a formal ceremony, and those attending included Helene Davo and others, who will be honoured for their work in tackling terrorism. Sources close to the government said the delivery showed the “excellent” level of co-operation between France and Spain in the fight against terrorism. It comes as the two coun-

tries continue to work together to tackle fundamentalist terror groups, such as the Islamic State. The ETA formally dissolved earlier this year, after declaring a ceasefire beforehand and announcing they would lay down their arms. The group were responsible for the deaths of several soldiers, police officers and civilians, while operational during the last century. They began in the 1950s as a group created to promote Basque traditions and culture, before changing into one dedicated to securing independence for the region, with violence.

Baby of just 16 days is bitten to death by dog A BELGIUM Shepherd dog, who had been with a farming family in Fasnia for some time, launched a deadly attack on their first-born baby, which resulted in his death, a short time later.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, just before 11.30am, and the 16-day-old boy, who had been bitten on the head, was rushed by his parents to a nearby clinic, close to Hoya. But the clinic wasn’t open, and there were no medical staff available to attend to the poor baby. A witness said the tot was so small that the father held him in the palm of his hands, while entering the premises in a state of shock. She added: “He was shouting, ‘he is dying, he is dying. Help me, please’.” And, through the commo-

tion, the parents described what had happened. While they awaited an ambulance to take them

to hospital, a doctor and nurse arrived from Fasnia health centre, and, immediately, attempted

to save the baby’s life at a neighbour’s home, using gauze from a nearby butcher, because the clinic

was closed. Unfortunately, their efforts were too late, and the baby passed away. Witnesses say the tragedy sparked a chain of unfortunate events at the clinic, which began with the 40 minutes taken by the doctor and nurse to arrive. It also took more than an hour for the ambulance to appear, although several calls had been made, warning about the urgency of the situation. Neighbours confirmed that the family, from Santa Cruz, had moved to the farm recently to learn the farming trade, along with bringing up their baby. The distraught parents are now receiving assistance from a psychological intervention group. Meanwhile, the dog was caught by the Guardia Civil, who said it had shown no sign of aggression towards them. Fasnia Council, out of respect to the parents, staged an official day of mourning yesterday (Thursday).

La Gomera fire soon controlled

AN emergency helicopter was extinguishing flames early yesterday (Thursday) on the Guarimiar ravine, in La Gomera’s Alajero municipality. Residents in the area alerted the emergency services as soon as they saw the smoke rising. The Canarian Government wasted no time in activating the relevant emergency services, comprising personnel from the Environmental Units as well as the helicopter, based in Gomera. Thanks to the authorities’ quick response, along with favourable weather conditions, the blaze was soon stabilised, with the flames under control,

MARIANA González Déniz, whose one-year prison sentence for an undisclosed crime was suspended eight years ago, in exchange for community services and a small fine, has hit rock-bottom. At times, the Santa Cruz woman, from El Sobradill, has been unable to carry out the community service because she suffers back problems. Also, her young daughter is often sick, so she has to take care of her because she has trouble finding childcare. Consequently, on several occasions, she hasn’t been able to continue with her community service, or earn money to pay the fine, which, unsurprisingly, has gone against the sentencing judge’s wishes. But, because she says she cannot possibly continue with the terms issued to her, she is actually facing a prison sentence now. She believes the entire situation is an injustice, and stresses that all these years later, because of her ill-health and her child’s sickness, it would be a

disaster if she were sent to prison. She also states that the situation is turning the family paranoid because her daughter attends school every day, not knowing whether her mum will be home when she returns. That’s because Mariana could be hauled away by the authorities at any time. She has appealed for another opportunity to complete the community work, even though her health is bad. And she pledges to pay the fine, somehow. The appeal was presented to the judge by Mariana’s present lawyer, who handed it in after the

deadline. Fortunately, a written report was presented earlier by another lawyer, explaining her situation. However, help is at hand for Mariana, because El Sobradillo residents have launched a fundraising campaign, and the collection of signatures for the “justice for Mariana” plea began Wednesday, outside the Santa Cruz Palace of Justice. Campaigners have also asked the local media for help. Mariana’s main concern is for her 10-year-old daughter, because, she believes, she isn’t coping with the current situation. And she is under too much stress.

Tragic fall of Czech woman trekker, 54 Collision

injures two TWO people were injured when a car and a bus collided during the morning rush-hour, in Santa Cruz on Wednesday. A WOMAN died, tragically, after losing her footing and falling into a ravine while trekking on holiday with her husband, in the La Laguna/Santa Cruz area of Anaga National Park.

The 54-year-old Czech fell in the rural area of the Tomadero Ravine, between El Baton and Punto del Hidalgo. A helicopter was dispatched to look for the woman, who had tumbled some 15 metres, and soon winched her on to the helicopter, once they found her. She had suffered severe

head trauma, after banging it on several rocks during the fall, and helicopter medics tried to stabilise the critically-injured victim. The helicopter then transferred her to the north airport, where an ambulance was waiting to take her to the University Hospital, where, sadly, she died.

The crash happened at a roundabout on Avenida Tres de Mayo, in front of El Corte Ingles. An ambulance attended the scene shortly after

the incident, and medics realised quickly that they needed help from the fire services, to help free two people from the car. Once they were released, the medics assessed the injured parties promptly. And, because of the stress caused by the accident, along with their injuries, both people were transferred to a nearby hospital.

Park littered with syringes deserted by the authorities

Early bird drives off with cops’ van A MAN was arrested on Wednesday morning after being caught driving a National Police van, registered to the La Laguna Police Station. The van, used by the cops to transfer detainees from the station to the court house, was parked outside the Police Station with the keys inside. The man decided to climb into the vehicle, start the engine and drive away, undetected! Unfortunately for him, the police had revised the surveillance cameras surrounding the station, specifically in the area where the van was parked, which enabled officers to see the thief in action. He continued to drive the van, recklessly, around San Andres, and then, between 5-6am, he attempted to dump it in the sea, at a nearby fishing bay. But the van came to a standstill, stopping just short of the water. Police soon found the van, along with the thief,

LAS Moraditas Park appears to have been abandoned, totally, by the Santa Cruz authorities, with used syringes and rubbish littering the grounds daily.

and, once detained by the officers, he was tested for drugs and alcohol, the readings proving positive. At the time of the robbery, the van was parked near the entrance of the station, where, as a rule, officers should have been on guard. But there were no officers

anywhere to be seen at the time of the robbery, and sources have said that there is just one officer looking after the station, and he’s in charge of security, answering the phones and monitoring the station, as well as keeping an eye on the surveillance cameras.

Locals residents have insisted that this particular recreational area is occupied regularly by local children and adolescents. And that’s why a neighbour decided to get things moving, by alerting the Canarian emergency services about the park’s miserable state. The Canarian emergency services referred him to the

Local Police, who told him they couldn’t take charge of the park. He was advised to contact the Urbase company, which cleans and collects urban rubbish. But weeks have passed by, and, after the anonymous resident had been passed from pillar to post… the park remains the same! Reporters from a local Spanish newspaper have since visited the park to witness the state of the abandoned garden, just 100 metres from McDonald’s. The pressmen are now collaborating with the locals to get someone, anyone, to take responsibility for the situation.

Huge Atlantic challenge really is a family affair!

A FATHER and his two sons are bidding to become the first family trio to row the Atlantic, and, at the same time, raise £500,000 for their local charity in Salisbury. James Trafford, at the age of 59, and a father of five, is one of the oldest participants ever to attempt the daunting, transatlantic crossing in a rowing boat, while 18-year-old son Joe is one of the youngest. Older brother Hugo, 22, is the third member of the amateur rowing team, competing in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, across the Equator, which is acknowledged as the world’s toughest row. The family trio, pictured

with their vessel, will spend Christmas and New Year aboard the Rannoch R45 rowing boat, named St Christopher’s, after the charity. They are preparing to encounter sharks, hurricanes and 40ft waves along their route, and the trio are following in the wake of the boys’ grandfather, Dick Trafford, who sailed the exact same route when in his sixties. Dick, now 92 and a former solicitor, like his father before him and his own son, took a sabbatical 30 years ago and sailed across the Atlantic with James’s uncle “for fun”. James said: “Dad was a great sailor in his day and still loves all things nautical.” It will take the trio between 48-65 days to row across the 3,000-milespan, from La Gomera to Antigua, in the

Caribbean, at just five knots an hour, when at full speed. Hugo, a geography grad from Bristol, who lives at the family home in Salisbury, Wilts, said: “People have died doing this before. It will be very hot rowing across the Equator, and the waters can get pretty nasty at times. “If it gets bad, you have to get down and lay inside the boat until the storm has passed. “None of us is a rower, but we are all keen sportsmen and we are looking forward to the challenge.” James added: “We’re really excited to get this rowing challenge underway, but I must admit other people’s reactions are starting to unnerve me. “Of course, there’s the physical side of the crossing, and for that we’re training hard in the gym and in

the boat. But the mental challenge we’re going to face is probably the toughest part. “We’re unlikely to see any other vessels once we’ve left La Gomera, so it’s just the three of us, with no-one on the horizon for months. We’ve also had to learn all kinds of survival skills; taking courses on first-aid, crisis-planning, and even how to scale the side of a ship in an emergency. “What’s spurring me on is our goal to raise thousands of pounds for St Christopher’s. It’s an amazing place, with inspirational staff who take so much care to make people’s lives the best that they can be, even if they are at the end of them.” The trio call themselves the Transatlantic Traffords, and, if they do achieve this enormous feat, that name will stay with them forever.

Millionaire mountains under sea at El Hierro

THE Geological and Mining Institute, and the University of Madrid, have just completed a joint study, which shows the richness of strategic metals, covering the underwater mountains (seamounts) off south-west El Hierro. The report based on several oceanographic investigations over recent years, concludes that these seamounts are covered by extensive crusts of ferromanganese, up to 10 centimetres thick. Underwater deposits such as these, which are extremely rich in metals, can take millions of years to form. And, it is estimated, these extensive, ferromanganese crusts are aged between 32-50 million years. Manganese is the 12thmost-abundant metal found on the Earth’s crust, and the name is taken from Manges, a Latin word meaning magnet. It was first used in the steel industry of Ancient Greece, where the presence of manganese in the iron ore probably explains why the weapons made by the Spartans were better than those of their enemies. In 1771, Swedish chemist Scheele first isolated and recognised manganese as an element. Later, in 1860, Sir Henry Bessemer invented ferromanganese as a way of adding manganese during steel-making. The advantage was that combining iron and manganese oxide produced a lower melting point for the ferromanganese alloy, compared with pure manganese oxide. So, El Hierro’s underwater coastline demonstrates a slower, but natural process of producing ferromanganese. And this fact has been confirmed by this important, geological investigation.

Primera Air goes bust, and passengers suffer! AIRLINE company Primera Air, which had routes between the UK and Spain, went bust on Monday, and is now in administration.

But stunned passengers, now without a flight home, have been advised not to travel to airports, but contact the company directly. Sally James said: “We’re stranded in Malaga as our flight has now been cancelled for Monday (8th Oct). We’ll have to try to get another plane home.” Antony Meadley added: “My daughter is now stuck in Spain. She flew out on Saturday and was set to come back this Thursday [yesterday] evening.” Stansted Airport officials issued a statement saying: “We have learned this afternoon that @primeraair has ceased all flight operations, and will go into administration at midnight

tonight [1st Oct]. “Passengers scheduled to travel with Primera Air are advised not to travel to the airport, and, instead contact the airline direct for information regarding their flight. “We understand that this is a difficult time for customers whose travel plans have been disrupted, and we are providing information and assistance to those who have already travelled to the airport for flights due to depart today.” However, no further information has been forthcoming from Primera Air since they issued

Monday’s statement, saying: “Kindly understand that the usual options for contacts (via email or phone) cannot be offered any longer.” Birmingham Airport referred customers to the Civil Aviation Authority advice service, which urged those expecting return flights to the UK with the operator, to make fresh arrangements. And the Civil Aviation Authority, the UK’s independent aviation regulator, advises: “Primera Air, a Danish, scheduled air carrier, which operated services from various points

in the United Kingdom, has announced it will cease operations. Primera Air is not covered by the UK Civil Aviation Authority’s ATOL Protection scheme, which only covers passengers booked on a package holiday. “Passengers wishing to obtain a refund for unused tickets will need to contact the company directly. Passengers who booked directly with the company, via a credit charge or debit card, may, alternatively, be able to make a claim against their card provider. “Some card providers will ask for a negative response letter confirming the position*. Passengers may also be able to make a claim against their travel insurer. (*This letter will be published shortly). “Passengers who have travelled will need to make their own arrangements to return home. They should contact their travel insurer or travel agent for assistance.

“Primera Air, which was Icelandic-owned, but had operations based in Latvia and Denmark, had been running charter operations for some 15 years, serving Nordic passengers mainly. “Earlier in the summer, the budget airline announced that it was cancelling all autumn and winter flights from Birmingham Airport, and also cutting some services to Spain from Stansted. “It also stopped running services between Birmingham and Mallorca and Barcelona from 3rd September. Routes between Birmingham and Alicante, Las Palmas, MalagaCosta del Sol and Tenerife were due to stop on 29th October. “In addition, Primera Air dropped its StanstedAlicante route on 30th September, and had announced that some flights from Stansted to Malaga-Costa del Sol were being cut from 1st October.”

MP ‘Candy’ is crushed again A MEMBER of Parliament, attached to the rightwing PP party, was, famously, caught playing Candy Crush on her mobile phone during a session.

And she has been captured on camera, skiving again… this time browsing clothingstore websites. Celia Villalobos, whose party governed Spain from November 2011 until June this year, was photographed in February 2015 on her tablet in a Parliamentary meeting. She was playing the addictive, sweet-exploding successor to Bejewelled Blitz, but showed little remorse. Last week, the MP was again whiling away the “dull” Parliamentary moments, shopping for clothes online. Unfortunately for her, a camera crew from La Sexta, Spain’s sixth channel, caught her at it. When questioned by

reporters, Villalobos’ unashamed response was: “I’ll do whatever I feel like.” Despite being paid for her MP role and her presence in Parliament, and having actually been Parliamentary chairwoman when she was photographed playing Candy Crush, she is adamant that she has “a clear conscience” about her behaviour. She justified her latest “shaming” by pointing out that she was now “a nobody” in Parliament.

Last month, after 30 years in the role, the PP relieved the former minister of her permanent MP title, which is the equivalent of a lifelong peer in the UK’s House of Lords. After her online-shopping incident, and its inevitable reference to her earlier Candy Crush “capture”, Villalobos complains that the media is staging a “witch-hunt” against her. But there’s a simple antidote for that… as she well knows!

Hit-and-run driver had taken booze and cocaine

A MOTORIST, aged 60, has been arrested by the National Police in Madrid after testing positive for alcohol and cocaine, after crashing into a mother, her baby and child. The driver fled the scene of the incident, which happened in Madrid last Saturday night at around 9pm. Local media suggest that the driver struck a mother, her four-month-old baby and her 10-year-old boy, as they made their way across a pedestrian crossing in the Leganés area of Madrid. He failed to stop his Ford Mondeo, causing the youngest child to suffer a thoracic compression fracture of the spine. The 10-year-old boy suffered injuries to an arm. National Police were first to arrive on the scene, and

officers attempted to perform resuscitation manoeuvres on the baby, who was then rushed to Hospital Doce de Octubre, where he remains. But Spanish media say he is now in a stable condition. Police claim that an off-duty officer of the Local Police, who witnessed the incident, saw the offending driver stop, briefly, before speeding off. But he was able to record the car’s registration number as the driver departed, rapidly. Police tracked down the vehicle within hours, which led to the arrest of a suspect, who was the registered owner’s the father-in-law. He was taken to a Madrid Police station, where he tested positive for alcohol and cocaine consumption. The suspect has since been charged for hit-and-run offences.

Sagrada Família cathedral is rising to the challenge! BARCELONA’S iconic Sagrada Família cathedral has finally broken the 100metres-high barrier, 92 years after the start of its construction.

The unusual, ultra-modern, totally-unique temple, is split on the inside, almost equally, between the mass area, the tourist trail and the cement-mixer zone. True, it remains unfinished to this day, but work has never stopped on it since the 1920s. And plans are afoot to have it completed by June 2026, exactly 100 years after its creator, Antoni Gaudí, met his end when hit by a bus while crossing the street to his very own masterpiece. In total, it will have 18 towers, or spires, and, once completed, it will stand 172.5m high. The six central spires are currently being built: four for the Evangelists, the Mary Tower, and the final pièce de résistance, the Jesus Christ Tower. That will be the highest of all, and will take eight years to construct. The first row of bricks will be laid by the end of this year if everything goes to plan, and it will be the final part of the cathedral to be completed, according to Esteve Camps, managing director of the Sagrada Família Foundation, during a press conference, some 85 metres above the ground. Reporters braved vertigo to attend the announcement on the part of the cathedral that will become the base for the Jesus Christ Tower. And milestones are gradually being ticked off. By 2020, the still-unfinished cathedral will be the highest building on the Barcelona

skyline, and, by 2022, the 17-metre cross on the roof will be finalised. Certain decorative elements are unlikely to be finished by the June 2026 deadline, but the actual construction is expected to see hundreds of thousands of tourists, and reporters, converge on it, the day the building site is cleared away. Tourists are, in fact, the ones to be thanked for the progress made so far, because the Sagrada Família’s construction, and maintenance of the existing building, is funded entirely by visitor tickets. But as one of Spain’s most-highly-rated tourist attractions, work on the cathedral has always been non-stop, because funding from holiday-makers is an endless, lucrative source. While some may be put off by the queues stretching far round the block, the wait to get inside is rarely more than 20 minutes to an hour, which is a tiny price to pay to see this surreal and splendid structure. And the price, in financial terms, is extremely inexpensive for such a weird and wonderful globallyacclaimed monument. Some four million annual visitors have made it possible for 50m euros to be invested on the works this year, and last. Normally, these figures would have been higher, but for the terrorist attacks on the Ramblas on 17th August last year, which led to a lean eight months, because international sightseers gave Barcelona a miss, out of fear. Since this June, however, visitor numbers are starting to rocket, as the attacks become a distant memory for many people, elsewhere in the world.

Spanish politician says Gibraltar is tax haven SPAIN’S Esteban González Pons, an MEP and member of Spain’s PP centreright party, who has called for the future of Gibraltar to be resolved during Brexit talks, accuses The Rock of being “a tax haven”.

González Pons (pictured), who also believes it’s “paradise for a moneylaunderer”, even described The Rock as a “foreign colony”, during an MEP debate about Brexit, ahead of the EU summit. He added, sharply, that Gibraltar was “a stain on the European integration process”, and even labelled the British Overseas Territory an “historic anachronism”.

González Pons suggested that Spain would not have a “better chance to sort out the last colony that remains in Europe”. At present, though, his country is more concerned about Gibraltar’s socioeconomic conditions, than the question of The Rock’s ownership. Josep Borrell, Spain’s Foreign Affairs Minister, claimed, last month, that “the issue of sovereignty

is not on the table” during Spain’s Brexit negotiations with the UK, regarding Gibraltar. Previously, Borrell has cited issues such as The Rock’s airport, tobacco, fishing, commuters and customs as his greatest causes for concern. And, for the moment, he believes that waiving Spain’s claim to Gibraltar is “the first step towards an agreement”.

Gender-violence as women and children are murdered A MAN believed to have stabbed his 46-year-old partner to death, in the Torrox area of Málaga, is being hunted by Spanish police. Her body was found inside an apartment in the Andalucian municipality, reported the Cadena SER radio network, and the incident followed several more cases of genderviolence in Spain last week. Two women and two children were killed in three separate episodes of domestic violence, bringing the total number of victims so far this year to 41, according to the Equality Ministry. A 48-year-old man is

understood to have killed his two little girls, aged six and two, in Castellón, then committed suicide by jumping out the window of their sixth-floor apartment. He had been separated from his wife for a year, and court

records show two actions against him for gender violence. In January, a doctor who examined the ex-wife filed a report, and in February, the woman complained, officially, about his

threatening behaviour. But both reports were shelved. In Maracena (Granada), a 49-year-old man stabbed his former partner to death. A neighbour called the emergency services when Nuria Alonso Mesa, 39, began calling for help from a window at around 9am. But by the time help arrived, the victim was lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen. There was no record of complaints against the suspect, who has been arrested. In Bilbao, the police arrested a man after finding his wife dead in their apartment. Her throat had been slit, and her husband had a small cut on his neck. It later emerged that a judge, at a gender-violence court in the Basque city, had denied victim Maguette Mbeugou’s earlier request

to issue a restraining order against her husband, on the grounds that she already had plans to move to a different apartment with her young daughters. And in Torremolinos (Málaga), a 37-year-old man from Romania was arrested after stabbing and beating a Filipino woman repeatedly. He had met her a few days earlier, but she had refused to start a relationship with him. The victim, now recovering from her wounds, was found wandering around the streets of Torremolinos. Her alleged attacker went to the police, voluntarily, to confess the crime. “I would rather spend 20 years in jail than have you ignore me,” he is alleged to have told his victim, before attacking her.

Man scraps court for Benidorm trip A MAN aged 49 faces arrest on his return to UK, after dodging a court appearance and flying to Benidorm for a holiday. Following a mass brawl at Goodwood races, Leslie Sharp was accused of kicking another racegoer in the head. He was one of 11 men charged in connection with the fight in West Sussex. But he flew to Spain on the morning he was set to appear in court, Worthing magistrates

were told. Suntan or not, he will be nabbed and held without bail when he returns to the UK. Sharp is charged with assaulting Andrew Renwick, causing actual bodily harm, in May this year. Police officers were stationed at the court to keep the peace, as the remaining 10 scrappers appeared in court, split into two groups They were charged with violent disorder at the race-meeting, but none of them has entered a plea, and all have all been sent to Guildford Crown Court.

Uber and Cabify given ultimatum

THE Spanish Government has given Uber and Cabify drivers four years to comply with new licencing regulations, issued by its autonomous regions and cities. This goes right against the grain for those driving the ride-hailing services, which gives them a good living. There are almost 11,000 vehicles with ride-sharing licences, and more than 65,000 with taxi licences, Public Works Ministry

data shows, with more than 150,000 taxi drivers and 15,000 Uber and Cabify drivers in operation. Drivers of Uber and Cabify took to the streets recently to protest against the proposed transfer of licencing powers to Spanish regions. They fear it aims to reduce licence numbers, but Public Works Minister José Luis Abalos said: “If they want to continue working in cities, they will have to apply for appropriate licences.” The Government last year agreed on new regulations, to guarantee a cap on licences for Uber and similar services at a ratio

of just one permit for every 30 taxi permits. But taxi-drivers took to the streets this summer saying this ratio was not being respected. They also demanded an end to the practice of transferring ride-hailing permits between drivers. The Government then decided to transfer licencing regulations to the regions. “Some will see four years as too long, and others will see it as too short,” said Abalos. “We are trying to create a space, which allows for both sectors to coexist under the same legislation.”

Hundreds of migrants saved by coastguards

SPANISH coastguards collected a total of 342 people from seven boats, as they made their way to the country’s southern coast last Saturday.

A total of 170 were taken to Almeria City’s port aboard the coastguard boat Guardamar Caliope, arriving at around 8.50pm. The remainder were transferred to the port of Motril, confirmed Salvamento Maritimo sources. Coastguards said the first of the migrant boats had 62 people, comprising 56 men and six women. The

second carried 58 migrants, including 10 women, while the third had 48 men and five women on board. A fourth boat was occupied by 35 men, five women and six children, while a fifth had a total of 57 people. The passengers of the four boats were picked up by the Guardamar Caliope in the Alboran Sea. Another two boats, with a total of 66 migrants, including 10 women, were picked up by the Salvamar Spica. They were all in good health, according to coastguard sources. The Salvamento Maritimo remained on alert that night, after receiving reports about more boats attempting to sail for Spain.

New hotel complex ‘breaking the law’ A BRITISH couple are seeking legal advice after a hotel, breaking environmental laws, allegedly, was built just feet from their home. John Hillman, 72, and wife Lori, 65, insist their community was not warned about the construction, which features a wall, now three storeys high, and is blocking most of their light. The building is also set to add an attic, and the Hillmans have joined Urbanisation Zahara Beach residents in launching a petition, which has attracted nearly 2,000 signatures already. The couple, who believe the hotel wall is against the law in Spain, have owned their property in Zahara de los Atunes, near Cadiz, for nearly 30 years. And they claim that workers on the 28-apartment, Turisticos Gran Sol project, have even dumped cement and polystyrene on to their terraces during the construction. The workers have also attempted to cap a well and build the car park over it, which, say residents, keeps flooding the site with toxic water.

The Hillmans, who divide their year between Zahara and Sussex, claim waste water from the site is going into nearby dunes, killing grass and swamping the area with stagnant water, which is a breach of the Ley de Costas law. Lori added: “There is a growing group of residents, waking up to the scale of the damage, which the environment department seem to do nothing about.” Despite numerous letters and calls to Barbate Town Hall, demanding answers and documents, residents have received little information about the vast project. It took the group almost five months to obtain plans of the complex, and the project might now be in trouble, because locals say that signage has been taken down, and building work has stopped over the past week or so. But

this has not been confirmed. Either way, residents say the damage is already done. “The first time we heard about the project was when a JCB was bashing our back-patio wall at 8am, trying to pull our huge tree out,” said angry Lori, an acupuncturist who works in Gibraltar. “This led to the dunes being flooded with waste water, but we managed to stop them after my son threatened to call the police.” The Hillmans claim they were not given the statutory 20-day warning period to make their allegations against the scheme. “It’s the injustice,” said Lori. “No one ever knocked on our door to explain about the rubbish, or to warn us about the building work.” The strong protest comes after the Spanish authorities were fined a staggering 12 million euros in the summer for a “prolonged failure” to comply with a European directive, dealing with sewage and treatment. The majority of offending towns are in Andalucia, including Barbate, Tarifa, Nerja, Estepona, Coin and Alhaurin el Grande.

Hundreds of Andalucíans still love their cave homes

Keys to tragic death

A CHILEAN photographer has spent a fortnight in Andalucía, documenting hundreds of incredible cave-dwellers, and their fascinating homes. As part of her project, Tamara Merino captured the astonishing cave sanctuaries and their residents, in the Granada areas of Gaudix and Sacromonte in Granada. Tamara told the National Geographic magazine: “The most important thing for me was not to have any preconceptions. I like to sit with people and hear their stories, and I share my life with them as well.” Gaudix houses around 2,000 underground dwellings, where residents still live an agricultural life, just as their forefathers did, five centuries ago. “And they still live with the animals inside the caves,” added the photographer. Tocuato Lopez and his family have lived in

the Gaudix caves for four generations, and, he said: “They offer shelter from the unbearable summer heat, while providing a sense of deeprooted community. “I’m very proud of being from the cave, and still living in the cave… and I will die in the cave!” Sacromonte, which sits across from the iconic

Alhambra in Granada, is mainly occupied by illegal squatters. So, no great history there! Yet the lower sector is mostly home to legal residents, drawn to cave life for environmental and cultural reasons. Many members of the community, such as Henrique Amaya, continue to reside in the caves as

a way of honouring their Romani culture. “I was born inside a cave with the animals and the beasts,” said Amaya, whose family have lived in the Sacromonte caves for six generations. And his ancestors devised the original Zambra flamenco, first performed in the caves more than 500 years ago.

MADRID police believe that a 54-year-old man, found dead in a sewer in Leganés town, had lifted a drain cover and climbed down in search of the car keys he had dropped, accidently. His body was found at the bottom of the drain at 4am by the Local Police. The man’s mobile phone was found next to the drain, while his car, with a door open, was parked nearby. And this, initially, caused the officers to take a closer look. Emergency services confirmed the man’s death, and said that the body showed no immediate signs of a violent death. An autopsy should reveal more information, but sewer gases may include hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

It’s such a hard pill to swallow! CHEMISTS in Spain’s Alicante region claim they are having supply problems with no fewer than 382 drugs, which, they maintain, is an unusually high figure. Curiously, the majority of them are common medications, which are widely used. For example, Adiro is the country’s second-most-used drug. It is taken to control thrombosis by reducing the risk of blood clots, particularly in those who have suffered angina, heart attacks or a stroke. They are also prescribed for patients who have undergone heart surgery.

But pharmacists, reportedly, cannot get their hands on 100mg and 300mg tablets. A production cut at the Bayer plant in Leverkusen, Germany is to blame for particular shortages, according to the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products. The pharmaceutical producer has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the production problem, and says it is “making every effort to restore the regular supply of the affected product”. Painkiller Nolotil is also out of stock, in 575mg capsules and the injectable form. But

the drug, which is banned in the UK and America, is under investigation by the medicines’ regulator, after concerns were raised that northern Europeans may be particularly at risk of sideeffects. Fe Ballestero, President

of the Association of Pharmacists of Alicante, said that while most of the drugs in short supply can be substituted with generics, it is not a simple swap. He adds: “Patients must go back to their doctors to have their prescriptions

changed.” And, as in the case of flecainide, used to control abnormal, fast rhythms of the heart, there are not always replacement drugs. Other contributing factors for the supply issues include a shortage of raw materials, problems in production plants, as well errors in the instructions, or in the packaging. But pharmacists blame the low drug process, imposed by the Spanish Ministry of Health, which leads to laboratories committing their production to other countries, in which the prices of the same drugs are higher.

Did gunmen murder their hostage victim?

THE body of a man, who had been brutally murdered, was discovered in Algeciras, Cadiz, on Wednesday.

It followed the Costa del Sol kidnapping of a diner by hooded gunmen, just hours earlier, the previous night. The victim had several stab wounds, and National Police are trying to discover any links to Tuesday’s incident. Police believe it was typical of a “settling of scores” among gangs, and they feel that the kidnapping could have led to the murder. Witnesses say that as many as four armed, hooded men approached a diner at Mr Noodles, a restaurant on Estepona’s promenade, at around 10.45pm. Sources cited by Diario Sur say the man made a run for it, and the kidnappers shot at him while giving chase. They caught up with him at the door of a restaurant on Plaza de Ortiz, where other witnesses say they beat him up and bashed him over the head with the butt of a gun. It was then that a BMW X5 vehicle pulled up alongside, and the man was bundled inside. The reports came after a witness told the Olive Press he saw the same car speeding past them after hearing gunshots. “We were driving away from Estepona towards Cancelada,” he said. “and, as we passed the beach, we heard shots. We were then overtaken by a grey BMW X5 at speed, heading in the same direction as us!” The shooting caused mass panic and a stampede in the seaside town. Expats and locals locked themselves inside bars, and staff at restaurants feared it might have been a terrorist attack. But police stressed that the investigation was still in its infancy, and that nothing had been confirmed. But according to National Police Commissioner Fernando Calleja

this week, the gunfire and violent crime witnessed in Estepona this summer were “normal, for a town that’s home to international criminals.” He also declared the area to be “very safe”, after receiving the crime-rate figures this week from the Interior Ministry. Calleja said Estepona was an “ideal place to live”, and that its crimes were typical of any other coastal town. But his timing was unfortunate, because, hours later, residents and tourists were running for their lives. Calleja added: “Thanks to the potential for money to be made, we are visited by criminals who wait for tourists at airports, stealing suitcases at hotel entrances, or thieving luxury watches. These are the most frequent crimes in the city.” But he believes the recent shootings, not including this week’s incident, are “normal” for the area, which hides international criminals and organised crime members. “There is so much drug activity here, and that, naturally, brings these vendettas,” he stressed.

Hydrogen-battery car can charge, in a flash! A HYDROGEN, battery-powered car, an SUV which can run for 666 kilometres before it needs charging, has arrived in Spain. The Hyundai Nexo is a zeroemissions vehicle, combining “innovative technology with futuristic design and incredible autonomy”. The latter is provided by “the latest driver-assistance devices”, according to the manufacturer. It goes from 0-60, from a standstill, literally, to 96kph (60mph) in 9.5secs, with a maximum 161 horse-power, 40 kW (kilowatt) batteries and a hydrogen fuel battery of 95 kW. The NEXO is the upgraded version of the Hyundai Tucson FCEV, which has 170 kilometres’ less gas in it, once the fuel battery is charged. Among its driver-assistance features are a blind-spot view

monitor (BVM), remotecontrolled parking, and a speed-adjustment system. This amazing addition does not allow the car to be driven any faster than the speed limit, for the road it

is on at the time, detecting the limit as it travels, automatically. The Hyundai NEXO was, initially, set for launch in Spain early this year. But, at last, it is now available

from dealerships nationwide, subject to pre-order. Only two other models, besides the NEXO and its predecessor, use hydrogen batteries: the Toyota Mirai, which runs for

550km before it needs to be recharged, and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, which runs for 700km. But the NEXO is the only one to reach Spanish forecourts …so far!

Spanish scientists dismiss the origins of Parkinson’s SCIENTISTS at a Madrid neurobiology laboratory have made a groundbreaking discovery about the origins of Parkinson’s disease, throwing, into conjecture, previous assumptions about where the condition starts. The HM CINAC, or Integral Centre for Neurosciences, says the disease may not, in fact, “spread” to the cerebral cortex as its “final destination”, as has been believed previously. In fact, this is where it could start, which would explain why Parkinson’s starts off with motor issues, or problems affecting general movement and speech, as well as the body’s outward physical activity. A neurodegenerative condition, characterised by

rigidity, slowness and trembling, although the latter might not always be present, especially in young victims, has been explained, largely, by the death of “black matter” neurons, or nerve sources in the part of the brain which generates dopamine. That is a brain chemical, associated with the feeling of being “switched on” and “positive”, and an over-firing of what

is thought to be behind delusional disorders, such as psychosis and schizophrenia, as well as attention deficithyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The loss of neurons in the dopamine, or “active” and “feel-good” part of the brain, has never been explained, but the HM CINAC scientists believe it is not a localised phenomenon.

Instead, it is a “stage on a more complex, pathological journey, which, literally, progresses in a bottom-up direction”. In layman’s terms, more or less, Dr José A Obeso and Dr Guglielmo Foffani compare the brain with a tree. “The illness starts in the bottom of the trunk, when it is asymptomatic,” say Foffani and Obeso. “It then rises to about halfway up, when early signs start to show. “It eventually spreads to the leaves, which is the brain cortex, and that’s when you see the most advanced cases.” Symptoms most typical of Parkinson’s tend to manifest themselves in a much “localised” or ‘focal’ manner, such as a slowmoving leg or a trembling hand. But the disease may have already been present before any of these occur, say Dr Foffani and Dr Obeso.

The motor area and somatosensory area, responsible for voluntary actions, movements and responses, are the parts of the brain containing “the best and most detailed map of the rest of the body”. These could be the parts that suppress vulnerable, dopamine -transmitting neurons, and cause them to degenerate. “This theory is disruptive in terms of existing beliefs about the origin of Parkinson’s, but it does not necessarily break away from current hypotheses,” says the research paper. It adds: “Rather, it could coexist with these, and even contribute to developing new, and possibly less-invasive, forms of treatment.” The HM CINAC team, who consider the discovery to be “very valuable”, have started a series of experiments to falsify their theories.

Episode 1: This brand new series uncovers the secret world of real auditions and each week three jobs are up for grabs. From West End lead to stunt double and everything in between, the series celebrates the highs and lows as real people give their all to impress the panel and land their dream job. The Big Audition Studios opens its doors for the very first time with three very different jobs on offer: dog model, tv shopping presenter and King Henry VIII. The waiting room is filled with barking, as a pack of pooches compete for a contract worth £12,000 and the chance to be the cover star of leading dog magazines Dogs Today and Dogs Monthly. The wannabe dog models include a Chihuahua with a wardrobe to die for, a Mexican hairless often mistaken for a hyena, a rescue dog with one eye and a sausage dog who can balance a jaw-dropping array of objects on his head. TV shopping channel ‘Ideal World’ are looking for a new fitness presenter. A panel from the company are searching for someone engaging, unflappable and skilled at selling. Olympic bobsledder Toby, nervous Liverpudlian Holly and Wigan window cleaner Barry are amongst the hopefuls out to prove they’ve got what it takes. The final king-sized casting is for the prestigious role of playing Henry VIII at Hampton Court. Several of the potential Henrys arrive in full royal regalia, from the bling to the tights. But who will be crowned King? Will it be historical novelist Tony? Or perhaps bus driver James, who believes he’s destined to succeed because his route takes him past Hampton Court every day? As each panel gathers to make their decision and with tension mounting in the waiting room, the decisions are finally revealed. Meet best dog, new TV talent and your King.

Troubles: The Life After

Gordon, Gino

Thursday 11th Octobe

Saturday 6th October, BBC2, 21.30

The Life After is a poetic, intimate account of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, told through the stories of a handful of people who lost loved ones during the conflict. It’s not the story of the politicians or the terrorists. It’s the story of the mothers, sisters and daughters who kept life going when everything around them was crumbling. From 1969-2001 3,532 people were killed and 47,541 injured as a result of the Troubles. Many of these were civilians caught in the crossfire, as conflict and murder became part of the daily narrative. A steady succession of British and Irish politicians made promises, looked for solutions, formed unlikely alliances and wondered privately what could possibly be done to bring peace to Northern Ireland. Politicians and diplomats around the world strove for a solution, and even American presidents felt compelled to get involved. Amidst the headlines and the rhetoric, ordinary people were being killed, maimed and terrorised. This film, directed by multiple Bafta winner Brian Hill (Feltham Sings, Drinking For England, The Not Dead) and first time director Niamh Kennedy tells some of their stories. Stories like that of Virtue Dixon, pictured, whose daughter Ruth was killed on her 24th birthday when she was celebrating at the Droppin’ Well Inn in 1982. An INLA bomb brought the roof down, killing both civilians and British soldiers. Virtue tells the story of the aftermath, of how life changed forever after the murder of Ruth. She does so partly in interview but also in specially written verses from Northern Irish poet Nick Laird (Go Giants, Glover’s Mistake, Modern Gods). Each person in the film has their own poem, which crystallises and amplifies elements of their story. Moving from the particular and the individual to the general, Laird has written a poetic narration, spoken by Northern Irish actress Bronagh Gallagher (Girl From The North Country, The Commitments, Pulp Fiction) in which issues such as collusion are discussed.

Tonight’s show opens with a homage to the Harry Potter movies, as the professional dancers recreate some of the most iconic scenes in a truly magical group routine. After saying goodbye to the first couple last weekend, the pressure is building for the remaining celebrities and their professional dancers as they take to the dancefloor in a bid to impress the judges, Shirley Ballas, Dame Darcey Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and Craig Revel Horwood. Each performance will be scored out of ten by the judges before the vote lines open at the end of the show and viewers at home can vote for their favourite couple. Sadly another couple will leave the competition in Sunday night’s results show - and no-one wants their Strictly experience to end.

For criminal defence attorney Howard Greenberg, life is one long battle with the system. Loved by clients and feared by prosecutors, he’s the maverick of the New York courts. Last Chance Lawyer NYC is a new four-part series that follows the exploits of Attorney at Law, Howard Greenberg, a man who practices criminal law like you’ve never seen before. From his office in Brooklyn, Howard wages “war” against the government. He believes the state is out to screw over its citizens, and that the power of advocacy, in his expert hands, can save his clients from this tyranny. He’ll go to any length to preserve the liberty of the people he represents: from telling a client they “look like a f*&^ing criminal” to help convince them to take a plea deal, to dreaming up a fictitious courtroom diary clash to keep a defendant out of prison and changing his trousers in the street outside the Supreme Court, it’s all part of the style and strategy that goes with Howard’s mantra, “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing”. In the first episode we meet his clients: Wanda, an ex-cop facing a fiveyear sentence after a romantic night-out went dramatically awry, and Tony, an award-winning barber accused of inflicting an embarrassing and painful injury on a love rival in a fit of jealousy (or, as the prosecutor sees it, attempted murder). Howard’s wife Marie, a ballsy, no-nonsense, former court reporter, is Howard’s greatest supporter and feistiest opponent. She casts a sceptical eye over his cases and trial strategy with unflinching honesty and shrewd opinion. Something else likely to set Marie off is Howards extensive toy collection, thousands and many in their original boxes, housed in the basement of their New Jersey home.

In this series we’ll be skipping through the archives to discover what filmmakers found when they turned their cameras on our green and pleasant land... and viewers don’t even need to leave their seats, because this is Armchair Britain. Narrated by Miriam Margolyes, so begins this journey round the country as Britain is brought direct into audience living rooms. Armchair Britain takes a nostalgic, panoramic and unpredictable turn around the stranger corners of the UK, serenading bygone Brits and their lost worlds via archive footage. Each episode will focus on a specific area of Britain rich in local history, whimsy and tradition. Every corner of the country is featured via an archive full of surprises - with great characters captured on film, revealing a lost world that is both unique and curious. Celebrating all that is quirky, Armchair Britain takes a most special look at our distinctive country. Lending her distinctive voice to the series, Miriam takes us through some of the extraordinary footage from our recent - and not so recent - past. Miriam is the viewers’ armchair guide around Cornwall, Liverpool, the Yorkshire Dales, London’s East End, the Scottish Highlands and Islands, Newcastle, Bristol, the Welsh Valleys, Blackpool and Brighton. Today’s Armchair destination is the Land of Cream and Pasties - Cornwall. Miriam Margolyes is our guide around stunning surfing beaches, the ancient and mysterious Bodmin Moor, and the modern wonder of The Eden Project. We meet the beatniks in Newquay and Babs and Evelyn the Ladies of Looe Island, and join the May Day dancing in Padstow, visit the artists of St Ives, and still find time to stop off to see King Arthur’s legendary land in this wonderful whistle-stop tour.

Weekender Boat Party ITV2, 21.00

09:15 .......................Jeremy Vine

This new show will see favourite and new weekender reps facing their biggest challenge yet: working aboard a yacht as they tour party hotspots around the beautiful islands of Croatia and ensure it’s all plain sailing for their guests. As they set sail, it’s all about having fun out at sea as fun-loving David is back as Head Rep alongside veterans and party animals Imogen and Jordan who are joined by two new faces, Essex girl Charlotte and ladies man Jackson. All kitted out in their new uniforms they welcome the first two sets of guests aboard as Jordan leads the first night out. Flirting is on the top of everybody’s list as they work out who fancies who, but it’s Charlotte who makes the biggest impression on lothario Jordan as he quickly singles her out as rep romance potential, but has she got her eye on somebody else? New rep Jackson isn’t having much luck with the ladies but with David on hand to lead the way, Charlotte and Jackson are getting the hang of rep life, but when Charlotte is given the job of leading the second night it doesn’t quite go to plan. The team are really bonding but David is wondering where his fifth employee has got too.

Steve has finally got his driving licence back and promises Nicky that his speeding days are over. In spite of her doubts, it seems that he has indeed turned over a new leaf. Even when he’s conned into a trip to the superstore with Alice, the devious old lady from the village, Steve manages to make the long journey across the moors without breaking the speed limit. So when Nicky’s father Ken is made President of the Garthdale Bowls Club, Steve’s offer of giving him a lift to the inauguration ceremony goes down well. Ken is even more impressed when Steve persuades Grizzo to lend him his brand new, high-powered sports car for the occasion.

Meet the host!

THIS year, for the 12th annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards, there is a new host for the main event on Sunday, 14th October at Castillo San Miguel. Following in the footsteps of regular host Nathan Swift, and Joe Ferguson (2013), Kirk Readings will be taking centre stage for the TEAs Does Cheese, after a cameo role at last year's event, when he attempted a world record, as we all took part in “Twerk with Kirk”. We wanted to find out more about him, lovingly referred to by his radio colleagues as the Bearded Warrior! About Kirk: Age: 32 Where from: Pembrokeshire, West Wales How long in Tenerife: Two periods, over the last eight years Doing what: Entertainment generally, although I've done some sales and marketing work, too Trade before entertainment: I was always in sales, in the UK CW: So Kirk, you've had two stints in Tenerife. What brought you here in the first place, and what drew you back? KR: The island's climate was beneficial for my children's health when they were toddlers, so, with t h e m as the priority, the rest j u s t had to work! We took t h e m back to start them in British education, but soon

realised the climate here wasn't just limited to health benefits, but lifestyle, too, and the education system we felt was, at least, on a par. Add to that the balance between work and life that I could achieve returning to entertainment, and we questioned why we ever left! CW: You work on the circuit, you are a compere, and are on the radio at Oasis Fm. How do the three jobs differ? KR: I've just got involved in the circuit again with my new show “The Bearded Buble”. Previously, I found it to be an in-and-out, waveand-smile-and-disappear kind of thing. It's a little unforgiving, because the show has to be top drawer all the time, every time, whereas compering lends itself to building relationships and forging bonds with regulars. I like trying new stuff out, which I get to do while I'm in the Pheasant Plucker, and the regulars are pretty good at giving me some leeway, if it doesn't go right, first time! With regards to the radio, it's the job I grew up wanting to do. It's a surreal form of entertainment for me, as I'm used to gauging the audience and their reaction to things, whether it be song choices, jokes or topics. When it comes to radio, there's no instant feedback, good or bad, and that's the biggest difference for me, personally. CW: Which do you prefer, and why? KR: Each has its own merit, as I explained. The role I prefer, above all others, is the radio, because it's the one job I do that I had idols in. I never really holidayed in this entertainment environment as a child, so I don't have experiences to draw on, or role models to imitate when I perform to a holiday audience. The radio role has a mysterious aura around it, and I love it. CW: How do you feel about hosting the TEAs 2018? KR: Surprised, scared, and honoured. Nathan Swift has been doing it so long that I'm sure he'll be a hard act to follow, but I understand why the change has happened from both sides, because he left Tenerife almost 15 years ago. Scared, because, although I go on stage every night, it's different in front of your peers and over 1,000 people, as opposed to the Pheasant Plucker! And honoured for all the previous reasons, really. I'm delighted that the organisers have got faith in me, although I'm not sure yet what they have in store for me! CW: As an entertainer yourself, what do you think of

the awards in general? KR: To be honest, what's not to like? Firstly, they couldn't happen if there weren’t the depth of talent and number of acts on the scene in the first place. Also, being an all-year-round resort helps, too, because it would be difficult to do this in a seasonal place that's only open for the summer. Secondly, this is the only holiday resort in Europe, if not the world, that has an event of this scale every year, pushing the scene, and the people in it. Embrace it, and feel the love. CW: Every year there is banter during the nominations and voting. Has there been anything memorable for you? KR: Well, to be fair, I've always stayed a little bit distant, because I've preferred to get involved behind the scenes on the day, with either winners' interviews or twerking! But this year has gone to a new level, with loads of really funny and creative videos, and celebrity tweets. It seems, finally, that people are actually “getting it”, and taking the awards for what they are meant to be … a celebration of the entertainment scene, an amazing day out, and not a bad way to market yourself, or your bar! CW: And what do you say to those people who are negative about it, or complain that people are asking for votes? KR: It's quite ironic, really, as the TEAs itself doesn't tell anyone they have to pitch for votes. But, let's be honest; as entertainers, they have to market themselves, so it's a natural thing to do - plus they want to win! And then you see the people who were criticising, commenting on all the videos and banter, and joining in. As I said, it's ironic, really. CW: How's this year's show coming on, and are there any surprises? KR: I haven't seen everything yet, but the “cheese” theme does open the door to have some fun with it. All the TEAs I've been to, and have been involved in, have been brilliant, so I'm sure this year will be, too. It's getting a reputation of not just being a day when everyone gets together, but also for being a great show, and all for a tenner! Surprises? There always are, but that would be telling. CW: And, finally, who have you voted for this year? KR: To be honest I haven't. Like everyone, I've got my personal favourites, including those in the live categories on the day, but I wanted to stay impartial this year, in my approach as host.

The Tenerife Entertainment Awards, sponsored by Sebastian & St James, are on Sunday, 14th October. The doors open at 1.00pm, and tickets are 10 euros (under 4 years free), available from Oasis Fm studios in Las Chafiras. Call 822 14 15 17.

Suzie’s world-beating olive oil and vinegars

BRITISH expat Susie Taylor has scooped up numerous, coveted food awards for her Andalucian-inspired products. And Susie, from Oxford, who created Fino Olive Oil,

has this year won two prizes at the UK Great Taste Awards, said to be the world’s largest and most trusted of its kind, for her dark and white balsamic vinegars. The foodie entrepreneur uses produce from the heart of Cordoba to create her award-winning, gold-

star balsamics. Both the white and dark vinegars, made from the Pedro Ximenez grape, are “skilfully produced by masters in their field”, at the historic but modest Bodegas Navarro, in Montilla. Secrets of their winemaking expertise have

been handed down from generation to generation, since 1830. Susie started her Spanish adventure, and a new life, in 2003 in Casarabonela, Malaga, soaking up the culture with her partner and three children. After mastering the language, she bought 30 acres of land, which included a large cow barn and olive trees, and was, eventually, able to secure planning permission to transform the barn into

their dream home. And that’s where her love of olives was born. She started olive-picking with locals, which would then be pressed at the “cooperativa del pueblo”, to create the “village olive oil”, before being drizzled across villagers’ dinner plates. In 2016, Suzie sold the house. But she has been able to keep strong ties with Casarabonela by selling olive oil, produced in the village where she had “such happy times”.

Cats Welfare News

A terrible situation AROUND 55 black cats have recently been discovered in Los Silos, living in cages in appalling conditions. They are very thin, and many are in need of medical treatment.

This is a huge exercise, so Cats Welfare is joining hands with other charities to resolve this matter. Volunteers have been to clean the cages and feed the cats, which are starving. We are appealing for food to be dropped off at Don Perro vets in Las Chafiras, or our shop in San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). Please mark the food “Los Silos cats”. We are not asking for cash donations at this stage, as a largescale appeal will be put together, which will include other charities. Anyone who can either foster or adopt one of these poor cats, please let us know. Vet bills and food will be covered by any donations. We are also looking for volunteers who live reasonably close to Arico. Horse Holidays Tenerife and Animal Rescue, in conjunction with Cats

Welfare, are taking 10 of these cats. They will stay in a safe area until such time as they are ready to wander freely around the property. The volunteers would need to see to the everyday needs of the cats up until that stage, including feeding them, administering any medication, changing litter and generally interacting with them. They would also be required to take them to the vet if need be, and certainly for neutering. We are also looking for donations of litter trays, litter, food, blankets or anything suitable for beds. Let's help to make life better for these poor cats. If you are able to help, please contact us via Facebook private message. Adoptions We have a large number of kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, loving homes. If you adopt a second kitten, it will be neutered and microchipped, free of charge. Also, it will be wormed and deflead, and be given its first kitten injections. This applies to ALL black kittens, not

just the second. As well as kittens, we have several adult cats available, male and female, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Live Arico News

Thank you for caring WE have had some sad cases this summer, but, despite her terrible injuries, Renee's two broken legs have been treated, and she is being cared for in a foster home. Thank you all so much for the support she has received. Little Enzo, who is battling cancer, also has a lovely foster home, so he can have his operation and rehabilitate in a clean, family environment. We are also happy to announce that Ala, who has so many problems, including malnutrition and heartworm, has also found sanctuary in a foster home, so his treatment can also begin.

Thank you all, especially the foster parents. Please support our fundraiser because it is the only way we can help with these difficult and expensive treatments. Amanda’s Bar fundraiser We are holding our calendar launch in Amanda’s Bar, Torviscas, next Saturday (13th October), from 2-6pm. The money raised will go towards the very high vet bills for Enzo and Ala. Ten of the top entertainers Tenerife has to offer will be performing, and there will be stalls, face-painting, raffles and a tombola. It’s always a great afternoon out. If you can help in anyway with raffle prizes, gift vouchers or unwanted wine, smellies etc., please contact Siobhan on 6762 61825, or e-mail livearico@gmail.com Dog-walking club is back The dog-walking club

resumed last Saturday, from 9am-1pm. The dogs had a fabulous time with the walkers, and are looking forward to going out for a wander again tomorrow (Saturday). K9 Animal News THIS week's wonder dog is Hans! He has now, unfortunately, been at the refuge for nearly four years. It was estimated, on his arrival, that he was around three years old, so we think he's now between 6-9 years.

Community News

Hans

Although Hans is a large dog, he is a gentle giant, and is very low energy and cuddly. He has not yet found a loving home mainly because he is very shy. No one has given him the chance to come out of his shell, and felt comfortable enough to fall in love with him. However, all the volunteers and staff, who know him well, cannot even begin to understand how someone could not fall in love with

Accion del Sol News

Please do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting a dog. Each one is microchipped, fully vaccinated, and free of heartworm and fleas. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219, between 8am5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. this beauty! Also, he doesn't cope with the feeding schedule at the refuge, and it is difficult for him to put on weight. When he arrived at the refuge he was heartwormpositive, but, after going through treatment, is now fully recovered. Hans is a special dog who has been through a lot, and does not deserve to spend the rest of his life in a kennel. He simply needs that special person to come along and give him the time and patience he needs to get over his fears. Will you be that person? Why not come along and meet him, or contact us on 667 638 468, for more information. Christmas dinner Tickets are now available for our annual pre-Christmas dinner and show! Preparing for cooler days IF you own a property in Tenerife, but don’t live here p e r m a n e n t l y, chances are that the period when you are most likely to come out is now, to avoid those cold, British winters. After all, it’s the best of both worlds! However, if you haven’t been in your property for a few months, you may need to take a good look and see if there is anything you need to do, to make your winter stay more homely and comfortable.

Whilst you certainly don’t want to reproduce the interior decoration scheme from where you live, you do want to make it feel like your “homefrom-home”, and put your personal stamp on it. Ideally, you should celebrate the differences in climate and lifestyle. Because you are far more likely to spend time outside at your property here, it’s worth investing in outdoor furniture, whether you have a small terrace or balcony, or a big garden. Synthetic rattan furniture is a great option because it is lightweight (in case you need to move it inside while you are not on the island), yet resistant to sun and water, while looking rather stylish. Tenerife is blessed with good weather for most of the year, but we do occasionally get those cooler days, so coping with those needs to be built into your

plan. Most properties have no heating as such, but a nicely co-ordinated throw, casually draped over one arm of the sofa, adds colour to your scheme, while being to hand if needed. Many properties don’t have dining tables, or room for one. You will probably be able to use your outdoor furniture to eat at for the best part of the year, and may well

enjoy the novelty that you can spend time outside, even in the winter months. However, on those cooler evenings, you may choose to incorporate a small, folding table, or stools, to be able to sit indoors, or eat at your breakfast bar. As far as bedding is concerned, there is no need for the winter variety. From a design point of view, layering

is a great opportunity to incorporate colour and texture into your bedroom. Keep your summer bedding in place, but layer one or more throws, folded back to reveal different toning colours or patterns, and scatter a couple of casually toning cushions, to finish off the effect. Most properties have tiled floors which are great in summer and

easy to keep clean, particularly for sand and wet clothing, but rather cool for winter. Thinking ahead, why not incorporate some rugs in the lounge in front of the sofa, and by the side of the beds, to keep your feet nice and warm on cooler days? It’s a great opportunity to incorporate some extra colour and texture into your interior-design scheme, and you can easily remove them for storage, in the summer months. As the weather is currently warm, you may feel these tips are not particularly relevant. But there are sure to be a few days, here and there, in the following few months, when the temperature drops. It’s a welcome change sometimes, and you will be well prepared. All items mentioned, including free design suggestions and advice, are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

Google has the cure By Val Sainsbury SOME 75% of Britons have cured an ailment or illness after Googling the symptoms, a study found. Research revealed that seven in ten of us now self-diagnose and treat minor health issues, rather than try to secure an appointment with our local GP. It also emerged that the average adult now believes he or she can beat two thirds of all bugs, viruses and illnesses, without professional, medical attention. This has led to typical adults only visiting their doctors twice a year. A spokesperson for FutureYou, which commissioned the study, said: “I know a lot of people who

would rather soldier on than go to see a doctor for a cough or a cold. “And a lot of people with less severe symptoms know that a bit of rest, some healthy food and a good night’s sleep can be enough to let you recover and set you straight again.” The study also found 75% of Britons have warded off sickness with a trusty home remedy. And more than seven in ten are convinced that a

change to their diet, at one time or another in their lives, has helped to improve their general health. Despite our inquisitive ways, only one third of keen “keyboard doctors” have ever made their GP aware they have researched

their symptoms, ahead of their visit. When illness occurs, two in five of us are reluctant to book an appointment with our GP, preferring to treat the symptoms ourselves, or wait for the problem to resolve itself. About 78% of people are unlikely to bother their GP if they come down with a cold, and a quarter would rather wait for their conjunctivitis to clear up on its own, rather than book an

appointment. Two thirds believe they have the means at home to cure themselves of a troubling cough, and 64% are prepared, should a sore throat strike. One-in-five Britons, surveyed by OnePoll, wouldn’t deem arthritis or joint pain a serious enough ailment to warrant a visit to the doc, and 66% would avoid the dentist’s chair, even if a toothache flared up. However, chest pain

raises particular concerns, with only 4% confident they could identify the cause of a sore chest, and nine in ten aren’t confident in their abilities to clear up a chest infection without specialist advice. When it comes to trusty home remedies, three in five swear by a hot glass of honey and lemon to beat a croaky throat, and 17% turn to citrus fruit to reduce symptoms, when suffering from a fever.

CD Tenerife

Oltra earns ultra cheer WITH new coach Jose Luis Oltra firmly installed, for the second time at the Heliodoro, Tenerife secured their first victory of the season in an unspectacular match. Needless to say, the result was more important than how they played, but the home team showed maximum effort, with Nano breaking his duck, and Dani Hernández keeping a clean sheet in goal. It means they are now out of the dreaded relegation zone, and they have secured the much-needed confidence boost they craved. Oltra went back to the drawing board after their defeat last week, making several changes to the lineup and team formation. He brought in Raúl Cámara, on the right side, instead of the banned Luis Pérez, and Carlos Ruiz replaced Aveldaño for a strong back-five. Another player sacrificed was Iker Undabarrena, so

CD Tenerife 1 Cadíz CF 0

that Suso could adopt a more advanced role, while Bryan Acosta and Milla formed a tandem in the midfield, with Naranjo and Nano up front. Tenerife struggled at first with their new formation, but settled after 20 minutes and seemed more comfortable. It soon became apparent that a depleted Cadíz were happy to sit back and let Tenerife attack, in the hope of pro-

ducing something on the counter-attack. With a team like Cádiz, always so tight and tidy, and Tenerife now extremely cautious, it was no surprise that there were few attempts on goal, apart from a couple of free-kicks and corners. Shortly before Cervera was forced to make his first change because Marcos Mauro suffered an injury, there were good signs for

Tenerife, who were stringing together some good football. The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute, when Suso broke free and pulled back the ball from the base line to Naranjo, who miskicked it, perfectly, into the path of Nano, who smashed it straight into the back of the net! The home team, happy with a 1-0 lead, protected it for the rest of the first half,

guarding it with zeal. Cadiz tried to react immediately and almost got an equaliser, but for a great save from Dani from an Alex Fernandez effort. After the break, Cadiz came out with more ambition, and tried to make more happen in their opposition’s goal. Tenerife kept it tight in defence, and then saw a 52nd-minute chance go inches wide from Nano. From then on, it was much of the same with Tenerife’s back-five keeping away any danger, apart from a distant, harmless shot from Álex, in the final minutes. True, Tenerife did not create more chances to score a second goal, but their players did what they had to do, for a deserved victory. As for Cadíz, their miserable start to the season continues without a win. In fact, it’s their worst start to a new campaign since 1994, so how long will it be before there are changes at the Andalusian club?

Women’s Basketball World Cup

US golden girls make it so easy AMERICA’S golden women have won their third straight FIBA Basketball World Cup title, beating Australia 7356 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna on Sunday, to earn their 10th crown overall.

Spain reached the podium in third place after a gallant effort against Belgium, winning 67-60 on Sunday, before the final. Diana Taurasi, who scored 13 points, gave the US a strong 10-0 start, and the Aussies could only get within three points for the remainder of play. It was the first time the US hadn’t trailed in the tournament, and, as the final seconds wound down, Taurasi hugged all her team-mates and coaches on the bench. Victory gave the team’s Sue Bird a fourth World Cup winner’s medal, and a fifth gong overall in the

tournament, which is the most collected by any player. It also enabled Dawn Staley to become the first person ever to win a World Cup title as a player, assistant and head coach. Breanna Stewart, who scored 10 points in the final, was named the tournament’s MVP. Australia’s Liz Cambage, who came into the game averaging 27.2 points in the tournament, was held to just seven this time. And she remained the No.1 enemy of Spanish fans, who jeered and whistled every time she touched the ball. Cambage was the key to Australia’s win over host nation Spain in the semifinals, and it was their best World Cup finish since 2006. But the Americans remain unbeaten against Australia in Olympic and World Cup games, improving to 18-0 on Sunday. They have 11 World Cup wins over the Aussies, although this was the first time the teams had met in a final.

Sandy Brondello joined a select group of people to win a World Cup medal as both player and coach. She

starred for the Australians as a player in the 1990s, before taking over the coaching job this year.

Their triumph means the Americans have earned an automatic place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Suters beat maximum man! SUTERS 20:30 Crew didn’t have it all their own way, for a change, when they visited Legends last Friday and found John in top form, scoring three maximums during the evening. But experience came to the fore, as the Stokies won 5-3. The Pub were convincing winners as they welcomed Ourplace Playboys, for whom Alan conjured up a superb 107 finish. But with Sam’s 180, the home boys strolled to an 8-0 victory. Marilyns ‘A’ (now Scooters ‘A’) travelled a long way to Sandys, and came out 6-2 winners. But there was a tight game in Los Abrigos, as old rivals Pas O Nadas ‘A’ fought out a tough

4-4 draw with The LochIn ‘A’, who took the trebles by a 254 margin, to end an excellent night of darts. Picasso’s were on the wrong end of an 8-0 thrashing by league leaders Gaffers, whose Duncan hit 180, and, appropriately for a Wolves bar, the best finish of the night was Steve’s Bull. Palms Sports Bar entertained Clouseau’s, and, thanks to Mark’s shanghai finish in the trebles, the visitors took the match 5-3. A change of venue for Marilyns ‘B’, now Scooters ‘B’, did not appear to affect their darts, as they welcomed Nauta Nomads and beat them 7-1. And Naughty Nautas performed well when hosting Ourplace Breakaways. Eamon against Fudder proved to be the night’s best game, with Eamon winning, and helping towards a 7-1 home win. Woman struck by golf ball during Ryder Cup will sue AMERICAN golfer Brooks Koepka, whose ball from a tee shot struck a spectator in the eye during his team’s Ryder Cup thrashing by Great Britain and Europe, was horrified to learn that the woman could suffer longterm consequences. Corine Remande was hit by his wayward shot on the par-four sixth hole at Le Golf National in Paris, and reports suggest that she could lose the sight of her right eye. The 49-year-old French woman plans to sue organisers, claiming there was no warning from officials before the ball hurtled into the gallery. She

said scans had revealed a “fracture of the right socket and the explosion of the eyeball”. As Ms Remande left Lyon’s Croix-Rousse hospital, she said: “Quite clearly, there is responsibility on the part of the organisers. More than anything, I want them to take care of all the medical bills, to make sure there is no risk of infection.” Koepka, who Tweeted on Tuesday that he was “deeply hurt and saddened”, also addressed the incident during the following day’s press conference, ahead of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. “Yesterday was probably one of the worst days of my life,” said Koepka. “I haven’t had too many tragedies in my personal family, where there’s been a loss, or any kind of tragic accident, so I’ve been lucky in that sense.”

From Arsenal mascot to rival… in 18 years! NICO Yennaris captained Brentford against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, in the thirdround of the Carabao Cup… 18 years after being a Gunners’ mascot. His side lost 3-1 as Arsenal progressed to the next round, but it was still a memorable night for Yennaris, who was a part of the Arsenal academy when growing up. The pre-match photo with the officials, captains and mascots from both occasions, all those years apart, also reveals, by an astonishing coincidence, that the same referee, Mike Dean, was involved. He has hardly aged at all in the last 18 years, as he continues to referee at the top end of the game. But Yennaris, now 25, who has clearly grown, led the Championship side out at the Emirates.

Back in 2000, he accompanied Tony Adams on to the Highbury pitch for Arsenal’s match with Coventry City. He was actually with Arsenal for 15 years as a youth player, and was in the same under-eight side as Harry Kane. But after making just one

appearance for the Gunners in the Premier League, as a sub against Manchester United, he decided to move on, to further his career. He has been with Championship side Brentford ever since, having made over 130 appearances for the London club.
