Staff threaten a strike if casinos are sold off

Cont. from Front

The island’s authorities have launched a tender for selling off Tenerife’s publicly-owned casinos. But the 121 employees, who fear their jobs may not even last the two more years they have promised when the casinos are sold, are threatening strike action. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso Rodríguez insists: “We have very clear priorities, which are to concentrate all our efforts on actions and projects to improve the lives of Tenerife’s residents. “We want to withdraw from those which are not priorities, or are not appropriate for a public administration, as is the case with the casinos.” In addition to the 24.9m-euro starting price for Casinos de Tenerife, bidders will have to present a tourist investment project, worth at least 4.5m euros, for either Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz or Santa Cruz, where the casinos are located. It must be developed within a four-year period and linked to the respective casino, although other tourist amenities may be included. The tender specifications also insist that the new operator retains the entire staff, for at least two years. Following the 24th September publication of the tender, interested companies were given a 45day window to submit their initial applications. Once these have been reviewed, legally and financially, which is expected to take a month, the companies will then have a further four-month period to submit their complete bids. But the Spanish General Workers’ Union (UGT) has

urged the Cabildo to call off the tender, because “the privatisation of the casinos is not justified, under any circumstances”. A spokesperson for UGT said: “It is not logical that the Cabildo has put Tenerife’s casinos on sale for a value of almost 25m euros. “It is based on a price assessment that has not taken into consideration other variables, which would, significantly, increase the value of the casinos.” The trade union also said the two-year employment guarantee was “totally unacceptable and, without a doubt, the prelude to a conflict”. Both the UGT and Julio Concepción, a councillor for the left-wing Podemos party, have alleged that a number of unrelated public works have been charged to Casinos de Tenerife, which would explain the company’s losses in recent years. In July, Concepción filed a complaint with the Commission for Government Transparency in the Canary Islands (Comisionado de

Transparencia del Gobierno de Canarias), protesting about the Cabildo’s refusal to release documents regarding the casinos’ administration. “The failure to deliver the requested files obstructs an independent audit,” he said. “These documents are key in clarifying matters related to the ruinous management of Casinos Públicos de Tenerife.” Last year, Concepción

claimed that previous independent audits, carried out on the three properties between 2012 to 2014, had uncovered a number of anomalies in the venues’ accounts. The councillor, who described those anomalies as “impermissible in public companies”, contends that they have, negatively, affected the casinos’ profitability. As an example of the

alleged mismanagement, he revealed that in 2017, Casino Playa de Las Americas invested 342,000 euros in building an Adeje pumping station. This, he argued, had nothing to do with the property’s corporate purpose. The proposal to privatise the island’s casinos was first unveiled in May 2013, while Alonso Rodríguez was serving as Tourism Minister. The following year, with him at the helm by this time, the Cabildo moved forward with these plans, holding a licence tender for Casino Playa de Las Americas. However, the property failed to attract any bidders, while the sale drew strong resistance from both opposition councillors and union officials.

Fashion hits beach again

THE second Tenerife’s Beach Fashion show, staged jointly by Adeje Council and the Cabildo, takes place next week, from Monday (15th Oct) to Saturday, on two beaches, Del duque and Fañabe.

Although the event is aimed primarily at fashion, tourists and employment, the other objective is to strengthen the island’s image, and at least 30 top designers, Canarian and international, will also be presenting at the event. This year’s programme has been extended to activities which include

two catwalks and fashion conferences, as well as designer networking. Efraín Medina, the Cabildo’s Social Economic Vice-President, who outlined details of the event, was accompanied by Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira and Events Director Edgar Magdalena.

Ambitious Loro Parque says goodbye to single-use plastic LORO Parque is progressing with its strategy to get rid of single-use plastic from its facilities. And, already, it has replaced numerous products with alternatives, manufactured with biodegradable and compostable materials. Among other actions, the world-famous Puerto zoo, a prolific supporter of environmental projects, is committed to replacing singleuse, plastic water bottles with other biodegradable and compostable water bottles. It is acknowledged, by making such a big decision, as one of the European zoos’ pioneers in the vast battle against plastic. And it is only a matter of weeks before the new bottles are available to visitors. In addition, several sustainable options have been introduced in the Park’s restaurants, to reduce, progressively, the use of plastic, such as spoons, straws or slush tumblers, while work continues in the search for more alternatives. Also, the raincoats available

to customers in “Orca Ocean” have been replaced by ponchos, made with organic raw material from corn. Changes have also been made with the staff, such as the installation of water dispensers with returnable drums, and re-usable aluminium bottles, or cloth bags to replace the plastic bags previously used. Likewise, Loro Parque Fundación has put on sale different articles, made entirely of recycled plastic (R-PET), and its distribution will contribute

Motorbike crash leaves a pillion passenger critical

A WOMAN was left in a critical condition after being involved in a serious motorbike accident on the busy road, connecting Chio and Guia de Isora in the south of Tenerife. How the accident happened isn’t clear, but witnesses confirm that the motorbike on which she was travelling went out of control, and the 34-year-old woman was

a pillion passenger. The accident happened just after 5.30pm, and, because of the severity of her injuries, which included internal bruising and bleeding, she was airlifted, immediately, by helicopter to hospital. For the emergency operation to run smoothly, however, the TF-1 motorway had to be closed, temporarily, at Kilometre 94, close to the motorbike incident. The motorbike driver was a 37-year-old man, whose injuries were not as serious as those of his passenger.

to the awareness of visitors to the Park about the effects of the use of this material. Cushions, slippers, bags and backpacks are some of the products in which no water has been used in their manufacture, and nor has CO2 been emitted into the atmosphere. Loro Parque says it recognises the importance of minimising the use of plastic, because of its degrading impact on nature. Every year, it is estimated that the oceans accumulate

between eight and 13 million tons of plastic, which is equivalent to a minimum of 800 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, or 34 times the surface of Manhattan. “And it is estimated that, in the year 2050, there will be more plastic in them than fish,” said a spokesman. Thus, Loro Parque, strengthening its role as a centre for the conservation of wildlife, has decided to take measures, both in reducing the quantities of plastic used in its facilities, eliminating at least 80% of

its the single-use plastic, and in the awareness of its visitors about this mammoth problem. The Park, also represented by Loro Parque Fundación, expresses its concern for the future of humanity. By the year 2050, 85% of the population will live in cities, and life expectancy will reach 90 years. In view of this data, the zoo wonders: “How the planet will cope with all these difficulties, if its human inhabitants do not begin to act in its favour, from now on.”

Small quakes, and no great shakes…

INVOLCAN, the Canarian Volcanology institute, has registered a total of 78 mini-quakes since last Sunday, all with a low magnitude on the Richter scale, and all registered between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The institute, which has been posting updates of recent activities on its website, has also registered depths of anything between 10-20 kilometres. In the space of five days in April, a total of 160 miniquakes was registered in

the same area, between the islands, and the maximum magnitude registered then was 2.5 on the Richter scale. Involcan is publishing regular updates on its website, purely for the public’s scientific interests.

Lanzarote greets a fourth immigrant boat this week

YET another vessel arrived at Lanzarote’s La Santa port on Wednesday morning at around 8.40am, with some 30 immigrants aboard, and the Guardia Civil were alerted by fishermen.

The boat had sailed about a mile around the coastline before being helped by fishermen, who were operating in the area. It was the fourth small vessel to arrive in Lanzarote waters this week, making a total of 11, this month alone. The boat had to be towed to the port side, because of the poor weather, and several emergency services

were waiting to assist the arrivals. There were 29 men and one woman aboard, all from different areas of North Africa. Officers questioned the immigrants, one by one, to determine their ages, and, apparently, they all seemed to be in considerably good health, needing little medical assistance.

Ex-boyfriend crashes his car into love rival A MAN who ran over a love rival in his car after a heated argument in El Fraile, has been accused of attempted murder, after fleeing the scene before Arona’s Local Police arrived. The events began after a row broke out between them at Calle Tagoror, at around 10pm. Both men are 26, and the discussion concerned a break-up between one of the men and his girlfriend, who was, apparently, seeing the other man. At some point during the argument, there were insults, along with threats, combined with plenty of pushing and shoving. The victim eventually decided they weren’t getting anywhere, so he decided to leave on his bike and started to ride away. But this angered the former boyfriend, who jumped into his Audi A4 car and drove it straight into the cyclist, moving the bike as well as the man some 10 metres. The attacker fled the scene, leaving the bike broken in two pieces, along with the injured man, who was taken to hospital by ambulance after suffering serious wounds to

his hips and pelvis. Some 30 witnesses were at the scene, many of whom alerted the cops, who arrived at El Fraile shortly after the incident. Once there, officers interviewed the witnesses, as well as the exgirlfriend, who confirmed that the motorist was responsible for the events which had occurred. The former girlfriend handed over her former boyfriend’s telephone number, as well as other personal details. Local Police called him and told him he would be arrested for his actions. But he assured them he would hand himself over to the Guardia Civil, at their Las Americas headquarters. He kept his word, and, once there, he was arrested by the Local Police. He is now at the disposal of the Guardia Civil.

ETA member arrested

N A T I O N A L Police officers, in collaboration with Interpol, arrested a member of terrorist organisation ETA, as he tried to enter Spain on a flight from Bogota (Colombia), at Madrid-Barajas airport. The man, identified as Luis Miguel I D, intended to enter Spain using a passport from Mexico, where he has lived since 1980, and where he was nationalised in 1987. But he was detained under a European Order of Detention and Delivery,

issued in March 2015 by the Central Court of Instruction Number 6 of the National Court. Luis Miguel, known in the organisation as “Torero” or “Tontxu”, was responsible for important terrorist actions, including killer attacks and planting explosives, which injured many people. The operation, responsibility of the General Information Commission, in collaboration with Interpol, is an example of international police co-operation in the fight against terrorism, and against the impunity of ETA members, who are fugitives outside Spanish borders.

NEWS IN BRIEF Bakery theft went flat

TWO young Spaniards, aged 19 and 20, were arrested by the National Police for what would have been a violent robbery, at a Los Realejos bakery in the North of Tenerife. It took place at the end of August, and, according to sources, the police were alerted about the robbery as it was taking place. They raced to the scene, only to find a panic-stricken shop-assistant, who later told them that the two men involved had covered their faces and threatened her with a kitchen knife. Fortunately, she managed to flee, hiding close by to make a call for help. The police took a physical description from the shocked woman, and, after searching the area, found the men and detained them. The police reports were completed, and, together with the detainees, are waiting to be presented before a judge

Old boy not lacking speed

A SPEEDY pensioner was arrested by National Police officers in Spain, after he was caught carrying more than 60 kilos of amphetamine sulphate in his vehicle. Police suspicions were raised when they observed the suspect’s “strange movements”, and pulled him over. It was a good move on their part, because they uncovered the amphetamine sulphate (speed) haul. Investigators believe the 65-year-old driver is part of a drug-trafficking ring, operating in Castille capital Burgos, in Northern Spain.

Police nab an internet bully

GRAN Canaria’s Guardia Civil, based in Santa Maria de Guia, have completed an investigation into a woman’s 33-year-old former boyfriend, accused of bullying his exgirlfriend on the internet. He has now been charged

with internet bullying, after posting photographs on a contact page, of a woman with whom he once had a sentimental relationship. The victim lodged an official complaint about “someone” using her name and telephone number to upload sexual images of her on an unknown website, full of other unknown contacts. From that point, Guardia officers began their investigation, collaborating with the social-media site, along

with the telecommunications’ companies. Together, they were able to collect sufficient information, as well as evidence, to link her ex-boyfriend to the crime, in addition to him being the main perpetrator. The Guardia’s investigations began in July, immediately after the complaint was registered. As a result, the man is now awaiting an appearance before a judge, in the courts in Arucas.

Pensioner’s crash ends in car park! A FARMER, aged 39, died on 3.15pm on Tuesday after a tractor fell on top of him, and trapped him, on a farm close to Cruz de Ojo, in Telde, Gran Canaria. The call was received by the emergency services requesting help, but, on arrival, the ambulance crew could only confirm his death.

Injured hiker couldn’t go on

A HIKER, aged 55, hurt herself badly after suffering a fall in a rural area of Tijarafe, in La Palma. A call was received by the Canarian Emergency Services from the lady at 1.35pm on Monday. She asked for help because she couldn’t continue walking, following a fall which injured a leg. Because the accident happened in an awkward location, the emergency helicopter was dispatched. And, once the crew had spotted her, she was hoisted on to the helicopter and transferred to a safe-landing area, where an ambulance was waiting to take her to hospital. She was taken to Los Llanos General Hospital, where she was treated for a broken leg.

A PENSIONER, aged 68, suffered considerable head injuries after losing control of his car, driving into the Tu Trebol in Adeje, and turning the vehicle over.

The accident happened at 2.27pm on Wednesday, on the road adjacent to the motorway at Calle Charfa. An ambulance was called to the scene and the crew checked him over, before transferring him to a local hospital, where his injuries were treated.

Economy companies are facing a new tax THE Spanish Government’s Finance Ministry has revealed plans to introduce a new tax on collaborative, economy businesses such as Uber and Airbnb.

Finance Minister María Jesús Montero said companies whose business model was based on digital platforms, would be subject to new tax regulations. “We are going to look at appropriate tax treatment for this notso-recent phenomena of the collaborative economy, particularly in the accommodation and transportation sector,” she said. Online retail sales, as well as online food companies, will also be targeted, and Montero added: “There are businesses we all know, which are dedicated to services and are generating billions in economic activity. Yet they do not pay appropriate taxes, because the current tax laws do

not recognise this type of activity.” Under the Ministry’s plan, a 3% tax would be levied on online advertising services, brokering services and on the sale of data, collected from the information provided by users. This tax would apply to firms with a revenue stream of more than 3m euros in Spain and 750m euros internationally. The levy could affect

companies such as Uber, Airbnb, Amazon, Homeaway and Just Eat. Multi-national companies are known to use legal means to move profits from one country to lowtax jurisdictions, such as Ireland, the Netherlands or Luxembourg. Facebook Spain, for instance, recently declared losses of one million euros by exploiting this legal loophole.

The sister companies operating in Spain tend to be intermediaries, which manage marketing and promotion only. In response to the Ministry’s plans, however, Airbnb issued a press release, arguing that it “complies with regulations and pays all corresponding taxes in the places where it operates.” It adds: “The office in Spain offers marketing services and

pays all applicable taxes, including VAT.” Finance Minister Montero also announced that the Government would lower the VAT on feminine hygiene products, such as sanitary pads and tampons. “These are not considered basic-need products,” and are currently subject to a 10% tax, which the Government wants to reduce to 4%,” she said. And the VAT on veterinary products will also be lowered to 4%. The Ministry also wants to step up the fight against tax fraud, with reforms for “more fair and equal legislation that sheds light on complex corporations to untangle this complexity”. Before presenting the plan in the Senate, the Finance Minister said in an Antena 3 TV interview that there was a project to get older cars off the road, by helping people with fewer resources to upgrade their vehicles. And Montero mentioned an increase on the tax on diesel as part of the government’s overall, tax-reform plan.

Six-year-old girl and man, 50, die in a fall

Guardia catches dodgy dog-men Asthmatic girl is off the radar

THE Guardia Civil in Fuerteventura, from the Morro Jable Quarters, have filed an official complaint against two Tenerife men over the lack of paperwork for hunting dogs. Both men were served denuncias for breaking Law 8/1991, under the Canarian Animal Protection Act. They were caught transporting 14 hunting

dogs, all pedigree Podecos, crammed into a cage less than 3sq/m. The Guardia officers stopped the vehicle, randomly, as it waited in line to board a ferry. They asked for the relevant paperwork for the animals being transporting in the driver’s vehicle. But the driver presented them with legitimate paperwork for just six of the animals. The Local Police then became involved, only to discover that none of the animals was micro-chipped.

DETAILS of a teenager, last seen in Santa Cruz on Monday week, have been posted on the missing person’s webpage, sosdesaparecidos.es, along with her photograph.

Alisa Yosaray Luis Ramos, aged 17, is 1.55 metres tall and weighs 46 kilos. She is slim, with short, straight, brown hair and blonde high-lights. She also has brown eyes, and uses bifocal glasses. The description, posted by her family, also points out that that Alisa is extremely asthmatic.

A LITTLE girl, aged six, and a 50-yearold man, died on Tuesday morning after falling from the fifth-floor window of an apartment block on the Costa del Sol.

A full police investigation is underway to discover what happened, but local Spanish media claim the man was a family friend, who was welcomed into their home. But this has not been confirmed by Spanish police. The incident occurred at around 8.30am on Calle Jalón, in Malaga city. The 112 Emergency services

were contacted by several neighbours, who reported seeing a little girl fall from a fifth-floor window, followed by an adult man. Ambulances, the National Police and the Local Police were despatched to the scene, but emergency services were able only to confirm the two deaths. National Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the double tragedy. Malaga’s Emergency Coordination Centre (CECEM) 112 has activated its Psychological Intervention in Andalucia Emergencies and Disasters (GIPED) service to assist the families of the deceased.

Householders are now in charge of their own power! UTILITY companies will not be allowed to cut off the power in households with children, if the parents have not paid their bills. And the infamous “tax on the sun”, introduced by former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s PP Party when it ruled Spain, is to killed off. A new Royal Decree, or Bill of Law, approved in Parliament last Friday, states that electricity boards must make bills easier to understand, and they must state on them how customers can reduce their costs. In addition, door-to-door sales people, trying to convince householders to sign up to new electricity and gas companies, will be banned. The new law should help soften the blow to customers, who have seen their energy costs in the wholesale market shooting up, particularly as the coldest months of the year are now on the horizon. Already, the tax on generating electricity has been reduced to zero from 7%, which will reduce bills by around 4%, and this will be reviewed in six months. Discounts for low-income customers have been raised to 15%, and they will be complemented with a “heating bonus”. This will be paid directly to those already in receipt of electricityprice reductions, because their household earnings are below the minimum wage. The heating allowance will be tailored, according to customers’ “level of vulnerability” in financial and other terms, such as health conditions or disability, as well as average temperatures in their part of Spain. A lack of heating on the Mediterranean coast can be extremely uncomfortable

for two or three months of the year. But for those living further inland, especially in northern and central parts, it can be lifethreatening, because daytime, winter temperatures can plummet to two figures below zero, and the dark nights tend to last longer in these parts. The allowance will apply to all households in receipt of incomerelated energy discounts at New Year’s Eve, say, and to anyone else who applies for it and is found to be eligible before that date. Single parents are now included automatically in the description of those who are likely to be eligible. Power suppliers cannot cut off the electricity or gas through nonpayment in any household, subject to the “poverty discount”; nor in any home which accommodates under-16s, or people registered as “dependent”, or with a disability of at least 33%. Surveys showed that up to two-thirds of customers do not understand their electricity bills, so companies will now be required to simplify them. And they must draw attention to “factors as obvious and as necessary as the effect of a given tariff, and the difference between using electricity at certain times of day, as well as any other aspect that could reduce the cost”, insists the Government. Fraudulent practices by power companies, or those which ‘weaken consumers’ position’ will be subject to fines and other disciplinary measures. This means no more door-to-door

selling, which has, until now, led to many customers switching suppliers without realising, or being talked into doing so with non-existent discounts and benefits, which, they are told, are available on that day only, and require an instant signature. Those who have attempted to check up on whether sales persons are genuine, by phoning the electricity board in question, usually end up speaking to a call centre in Latin America, where operators are unable to verify the situation. The only time door-todoor selling is permitted is when a householder actually requests a visit. Digital meters can be adjusted more accurately to real consumption, in multiples of 0.1 kW, rather than, as at present, multiples of 1.1 kW. Energy Transition Minister Teresa Ribera is confident the so-called “tax on the sun” has now been axed. “This country is finally free of an absurd concept, which has made us a laughing stock in other nations for the last three years,” she said. “We just have to accept the reality of non-conventional consumers and producers, and anyone is now free to generate his or her own power without cost.” She stressed that shared selfpowering was now allowed, such as neighbours going halves on solar panels to serve both propertie. And the paper-trail for households and small businesses, wanting to go off-grid, will now become much simpler.

Driver’s poor parking was a magnet to police A SPEED chase took place in the early hours after police, who were patrolling the Las Americas and Los Cristianos area, spotted a car, parked badly, in a taxi rank.

It was 5.45am last Thursday, and the officers were in the Avenida Arquitecto Gomez Cuesta area, as they approached the vehicle to investigate further. It became obvious to them that the individual was anxious, so, as he started to drive away, the cops followed him because of his suspicious attitude. The driver, described as a Moroccan, drove erratically, and at dangerouslyhigh speeds, through Los Cristianos and Las Americas, frequented by tourists, even at that early hour. The officers called for back-up, and he was finally intercepted on the TF-665 back road, connecting Los Cristianos and Guaza. He was detained, after an initial struggle, and has been charged with dangerous and reckless driving, as well as driving without a licence and no insurance.

Fire-fighters rescue a dog and save kitchen

SAN MIGUEL fire-fighters were contacted on Monday night to put out a kitchen fire in a Valle San Lorenzo house.

It happened in Calle Era del Balo, and an emergency call was made at 9.30pm. The firemen ventilated the house because of the volume of smoke, which accumulated in the building, specifically in the stairwell of the hallway. They also helped rescue the frightened family dog, who went into hiding. And they eventually traced him, once the blaze was under control. The Local Police and ambulances were also sent to the scene to assist in the emergency, and, fortunately, there were no casualties. Another blaze was recorded in the early hours of Monday, this time in the North, and the La Laguna fire services were dispatched to help put out the flames of a parked car in El Coral. The car was parked next to another three vehicles, which were also affected by the fire.

Ecstasy and the Agoney of Adeje’s lively fiestas THE “descent” of the Virgin Mary and the Agoney concert are the headline acts in the first week of the Adeje fiestas. Adeje’s Patronal Fiestas, in honour of “la Virgen de la Encarnación and Santa Úrsula” began, officially, with the presentation, on Wednesday morning, of the representatives of the borough’s different neighbourhoods. Present were Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and Parish Priest Honorio Campos Gutiérrez, along with the town’s Cultural Councillor, Adolfo Alonso. Activities began yesterday (Thursday) with the traditional ‘descent’ of the statue of the Santa Úrsula Church’s Virgin Mary from the high altar, and will end with the “romería” (pilgrim parade) on 21st October. The Mayor said, “This is a time to remember who we are, and what is important in our lives, and to share what we have with others”. He added that Adeje had been paying homage to the figure of the “Virgen de La Encarnación” for over 300 years, when she was deemed to have saved the area from a plague of locusts. The seven representatives of the Adeje neighbourhoods were also presented during the morning. Mayor Fraga told the press in attendance that, unlike many other towns, Adeje did not elect a festival queen. Instead, it invites representatives from every

neighbourhood to take part, together, in all of the patronal events. In this way, all parts of the borough are present throughout the celebrations. This year’s representatives are Yuliza Chinea (Las Nieves), Daniela Casanova Vargas (Tijoco, La Hoya), Valeria Hernández Caballero (Los Olivos), Gara Negrín Díaz (Armeñime), Teresa García Acosta (La Caleta), Ana Andrea Pérez Esquivel (Fañabé), Thalía Martín González (Adeje Casco) and Sara Hernández

Hernández, who will represent Adeje at the Miss Sur competition. Meanwhile, Adeje youngsters will have lots to keep them amused over the next two weeks, with specific events designed for them during the local festival celebrations. The main parade takes place tomorrow (Saturday), from 8.30pm, at the bottom of the Calle Grande. There will be representatives from the Adeje neighbourhoods, as well characters from stage and

screen, plus cartoon friends, and lots more. On Monday, in Adeje’s municipal football grounds, there will be a children’s park from 11am, with bouncy castles, workshops, etc., and entry is free. The following day, the Plaza de España hosts a “Gran Circo Komba” at 6.30pm. It is an interactive theatre presentation, which is also free to the public. And next Saturday (20th Oct), from 5pm, the Calle Grande will be taken over by children’s activities, on

the last weekend of the patronal festival.

Dare-devil fire-fighters pull off cliffside rescue

Airport theft blamed on its security system A BRITISH tourist, returning to the UK after a week in sunny Spain, claims he was robbed of £400 cash and his credit cards, at Alicante Airport.

He said the incident must have happened when his rucksack passed through the security system. Kev, the only name he would give, said: “All was well until we got to the airport. I had my euros on me, but, foolishly, I left my other wallet with my English money in my rucksack. He added: “The only time my bag was out of sight was when it went through the security scanner. I walked through the scanner, but then the belt stopped while security men changed over. “That was the only place my bag was out of sight. I didn’t need pounds so I didn’t find it missing until I got to Liverpool airport. I felt sick when I found all my cards and £400 were missing. The bewildered man has

issued a public warning on Facebook, saying: “Keep your money on you at the airport at all times. It’s a warning from someone who feels a stupid idiot. But if that stops it happening to someone else, it would be great.” Other members of Facebook groups have expressed concern about the plastic trays going through out of sight on the conveyor system, while passengers can often be delayed by personal security checks. One commenter said: “You can be ages getting scanned because they are so slow. And all the time, your tray’s at the bottom, with money, iPad and phones… all there for all to help themselves!!!” Another added: “You put your bags, laptop and keys on to the conveyor, then they wave you forward. And you don’t see them again until you get through all the checks. If you walk with them alongside the conveyor, as I try to do, security has a fit. If you are stopped to be searched, your

wallet, watch, phone etc, are just standing there, unattended, for anyone to lift. This system needs to be reviewed.” Karen Hanson, an administrator on the Benidorm & Costa Blanca News & Information Forum, said: “Money and valuables don’t just disappear. Someone is helping himself to our belongings. “Whether it’s other passengers, or staff, it needs reporting and dealing with by the airport. CCTV is everywhere in airports, so there’s no excuse for any theft not be thoroughly investigated.” She added: “I used to work in a supermarket, and we regularly got searched on our way out at the end of our shifts, usually by management and the security guard. “They weren’t happy when I asked one day who searched them when they were going home! “Thieves come in all guises, and, just because someone’s in a job of trust, it doesn’t mean he or she won’t steal.”

No-deal Brexit would be ‘disaster’ in Spain A BREXIT “no-deal” would be disastrous for Spain and Tenerife, warns the country’s UK tourism boss, who admits that the resort areas would be dealt a major blow, without the business brought in by British holiday-makers. Javier Pinanes, director of Spain’s tourist office in London, said that hotels in destinations like Tenerife and the Balearic Islands were heavily-reliant on the millions of UK tourists every year. He also acknowledged that the travel disruption,

which could follow if the UK leaves the EU without a deal, would be “a really big problem”. His warning comes as negotiators from the UK and EU attempt to reach a compromise over the Irish border, with exit talks entering their final, crucial stages. Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab told MPs on Wednesday that an agreement was in sight, but he added that the Government was also “expediting preparations” for a potential no-deal.

Mr Pinanes said: “It would be a disaster. If there are no flights, if we have visas, and if we have problems with health insurance, people will probably not travel to Spain, or other countries in the European Union. “It’s decisive for Spain because the UK is our main market, and we received 19 million British people last year. “We have lots of connectivity between the most important cities in the UK, and the most important cities and destinations in Spain.”

FIRE-FIGHTERS helped pull off the daring rescue of a paraglider, left perched precariously on a ledge, 100metres (300ft) above the ground, on a cliff-face on Spain’s Costa Blanca. A gust of wind had blown the 21-year-old man offcourse and on to the cliff face in the Sierra de Redován, where he was suspended for an hour or so, before being rescued by the emergency services. Fire-fighters, police and a rescue helicopter were quickly on the scene, after the 112 emergency control centre received a call.

The rescue was complicated because the helicopter, initially, could not get close enough, without the risk of it dislodging the young man, who could have fallen to his death because his chute’s lines were tangled. Instead, two fire-fighters climbed down 60 metres, from the top of the cliff to the point where the paraglider was suspended. They cut the lines of the paraglider’s chute and harness, so they would fall away. Only then could the helicopter pilot access the area and rescue the man, who had suffered leg injuries. He was taken, rather shaken, straight to the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela for treatment.

FBI suspect dancing on the Costa Blanca MATTHEW Green, an art-dealer pal of politician Boris Johnson, who is wanted by the FBI for suspected money-laundering, has been tracked down to the Costa Blanca by The Sun national newspaper. The paper has photographed the 50-year-old in Javea, on the Costa Blanca, going about his daily life, and, allegedly, attending a rehab clinic in a pricey resort. Green was said to have been implicated in an FBI sting operation, after he offered to buy a 6.7m-euro Picasso painting, on behalf of a suspected crime gang. Subsequently, he fled the UK, having been tipped off, allegedly, that the FBI were attempting to indict him.

But he seems far from unhappy in exile, because The Sun snapped him dancing in the street to impress a girl in a passing car, then blowing kisses to her. Green also drove around the town in a £26,000 Mercedes sports hatchback. But when The Sun approached Green, who has been on the run since February, he declined to comment. He met Boris through the ex-Foreign-Secretary’s former mistress, Helen MacIntyre, who is an art consultant.

Gropers beware, you’re fully-fledged criminals SPAIN’S Supreme Court has ruled that all physical contact of a sexual nature, whether or not deliberate, and irrespective of how briefly, counts as a criminal offence. This ground-breaking and necessary verdict means grabbing someone’s bottom, breast or legs in a pub, a crowd or on public transport, for example, is no longer a civil wrong. Now, it attracts criminal charges on the grounds of “sexual abuse”. This interpretation of Article 181 of the Penal Code clarifies the situation for many victims, the vast majority women, with men the bulk of offenders, since verdicts in lower courts have varied between jailing the authors of this behaviour for sexual abuse, and dismissing it as “nothing”. The latter verdict was, particularly, the case when

groping was very brief, and the court considered it had been too fleeting for the victim to suffer any psychological damage. Now, though, however swiftly it happens, it is still considered a crime. The severity of it dictates whether the offender is imprisoned for the minimum of six months, or the two-year maximum. But a custodial term of

under two years does not have to be served, should it be for a first offence. Prior to the Supreme Court verdict, unsolicited and unwanted groping was considered a “minor, civil offence” of “humiliation”, “duress” or “coercion”, and only then if it were very obviously forceful, and lasting at least several seconds. Sexual intention is required

for the offence of “abuse” to apply, and it must be possible for an objective viewer to recognise it as such, from a description, or from hypothetical, slowmotion footage, although it is not necessary to produce any witnesses. The legal precedent was set during a recent case, which ended up in the Supreme Court on appeal, three years after the alleged offence.

A man had, reportedly, followed a woman into the ladies’ toilets in a bar in the Córdoba province of Villanueva, and attempted to enter with her. Briefly, he brushed against her chest and waist when trying to get hold of the keys. The actual physical contact was not considered “sexual abuse”, since it was not thought that the accused had deliberately aimed for the woman’s breasts and waist, but that the contact had been accidental. However, the decision not to charge him in respect of this contact did not take into account its brevity, saying that if the intention had been there, the fleeting nature of it would have had no bearing on the offence being one of “sex abuse”. It is not clear what his intention was in following the woman into the toilets, or attempting to get the keys off her, or whether he was charged separately in this connection.

MADRID’S High Court has found 85-year-old retired doctor Eduardo Vela guilty of three crimes in Spain’s first “stolen-baby” court case. But he has not been convicted! Vela was the perpetrator of child abduction, faking a birth and falsifying birth records related to Ines Madrigal, who is believed to be a “stolen baby”. Despite the judges admitting the case had “proved beyond a doubt” that Vela was guilty, the court deemed that the offences had passed the Statute of Limitations. This law sets a maximum time for a claimant to initiate legal proceedings, from the date of an alleged offence. Ten years is the set time to report abduction, and the court ruled that the statute of limitations came into effect when Ines Madrigal turned 28. Abduction was the most serious of the three crimes for which Eduardo Vela was accused, and for him to have been convicted, Ines Madrigal should have claimed between the time she became the legal age of

Under-14s barred from social media next year!

SPAIN’S new, dataprotection law will prevent children under the age of 14 from using social media… without their parents’ express consent! For now, teenagers, aged 13 or more, ccan set up their own accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other media, without an adult’s consent. But they will have to be at least 14, to do so in 2019. The data protection law is set to be implemented before then, in line with a European Union regulation, which gives member States a margin of between 13 and 16 years of age as the minimum for social-media use, without parental authorisation. Among the terms of the new law, which the Spanish Parliament is now working on, publishing photographs of minors, defined as anyone younger than 18, could be considered a breach of their fundamental rights, and, therefore, a criminal offence. As yet, the broad scope of this clause has not been revealed. But fines for failing to comply with the data protection law could be up to 10m euros (bang goes the pocket-

money), or 2% of either turnover or profits, should the offender be a company. Yet warnings, smaller fines and other measures will be taken initially. The new legislation will, additionally, give workers the right to “switch off” when they are not on duty, officially. For example, an employee working a nine-to-five schedule would, legally, be able to refuse to take a jobrelated call from the boss, or answer emails or calls from customers at six in the evening, or while on annual holiday. It is likely that they might be allowed to do so voluntarily, but they cannot be disciplined for failing to answer an “urgent” company email while on a beach, during their paid leave. Also, it should not affect workers with flexible hours, or those “on call”, as long as this is part of their role and has been agreed between employees and companies. According to Spain’s socialist government, the broad terms of the dataprotection law have been agreed by all parties in Parliament.

baby. She filed her first complaint in 2012, and is now aged 49. Vela would have been looking at an 11-year prison sentence, and, potentially,

paying compensation to Ms Madrigal. But she told the court: “I’m not interested in the money, or for Vela to go to jail. I want this to help get other

closed cases reopened.” The case relates to the recent unearthing of the common practice during Franco’s dictatorship, in which a network of nuns and medical professionals stole babies from poor families and passed them on to wealthy parents, who were unable to conceive. Doctors would then falsify birth certificates to establish a “bogus parentage”. Around 1,500 cases of stolen babies have been reported in Spain, and Ms Madrigal’s case was the first to reach the Spanish courts. Regarding her position, she has stated: “What I would like is for him to tell the truth, so that those mothers can tell their children, ‘I did not abandon you’, and for those children to know that they were not abandoned.”

Looky-looky men had better watch out now! A SHOCKING video has surfaced of a tourist in Spain, arguing with a “looky-looky” man, who punched him on the head and left him lying motionless on the pavement. The violent footage was believed to have been shot on the holiday island of Mallorca, and posted to the Facebook group “Cleaning up Magaluf ”, claiming; “What you witness here is the looky-looky stole this man’s necklace, and he is trying to get it back.” The group says: “Enough is enough! We’ve made this group to make a stand against the ‘prostitutes’, who have robbed, stabbed, bullied and attacked, not only holiday-makers, but the residents and seasonal workers of Magaluf. “It’s about time we all unite to show them that this is our home; this is our street, and we will not take this any more. No longer will we fear walking home alone; no longer will we have to see

them preying on the weak, drunk and helpless.” The group description goes on: “We will hold public demonstrations every night and prevent them from making a living, preying on the people of Magaluf, and, together we will take back our streets, and make them understand that they are no longer welcome here, and they are not wanted! “If the police will not do anything about it, then we will! We will put an end to this together!”

It adds: “Help us raise funds to organise demonstrations and raise awareness of this problem, until the government and police listen, and something is done. “This is not about sex, race or violence; this is about public awareness, and safety in the place we live and work. “We do not condone racist or offensive comments or actions, violent or abusive behaviour or any form of criminal activity.”

Dog-owners calling for ‘wooferendum’ HUNDREDS of anti-Brexit protesters marched on Parliament with their dogs last Sunday, to demand a second referendum. They took to the streets for their “Wooferendum” demo, in an attempt to heap more pressure on Prime Minister Theresa May over the crunch talks. The protesters are increasing their efforts to force the Government to allow a public vote, regardless of the Brexit deal it thrashes out with the EU. The protest was in full flow as SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said her party would back a second Brexit referendum vote, if it came to Parliament. Ministers revealed last month that pet owners, who want to take their dogs and cats abroad to the EU with them, might have to plan months in advance if there is a nodeal Brexit. Protesters carried banners declaring they had to “bark out” against Brexit, and that it was time to get

“paw-liticial”. The march organisers even set up stations along the route, to enable the dogs to relieve themselves on pictures of leading Brexiteer Nigel Farage. Brexiteers are furious at Mrs May’s Chequers plan, which, they say, means the UK will have to abide by EU rules, and will be unable to strike free-trade deals globally. The protesters, who marched through London, ended up outside Parliament. Ministers admitted last month that Britons would find it more difficult to take their pets abroad to Europe, should Britain crash out of the bloc without a deal. Under current rules, Brits can get pet passports, which allow them to take their cats and dogs abroad, as long as they have a rabies vaccination and a microchip. But if Mrs May does not get a deal, Britain will become a “third-world country”, leaving petowners having to register their animal three months in advance of travelling to the country.

Hyperloop dream’s closing in, rapidly! AN Andalucian company has built the first passenger capsule for the highly-anticipated Hyperloop, rapidtransport system. Airtificial, based in Cadiz, reached the global milestone in a project with California-based Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, and officials believe it will create wealth across Spain. The first, full-sized, 40-seater pod, designed to propel passengers through large tubes at a speed of 1,200km/ hr, was unveiled at the company’s plant in El Puerto de Santa Maria. Airtificial co-founder Rafael Contreras said: “They told you about a historic train, but I want to emphasise that we are making history. “We are from the south of Spain. I call Cádiz ‘Kilometre Zero’, and, from here, we have become global.” Javier Moreno, responsible for design, is convinced the rapid-transport project will generate great wealth in the region. “When we were shown the drawing, we raised our

hands to our heads,” he said. “We received a wonderful sketch, from which we had to make reality, and we had to think about everything: rivets, raw materials, and problems with the assembly… more than an Airbus. But we have created wealth with this project.” The next step is to integrate the capsule into an entire Hyperloop, technological system, and the company is already developing a second shuttle for a network project in Abu Dhabi, which, said the firm, “will be ready by 2019”. Hyperloop stems from an idea by Elon Musk, former

Tesla President and founder of PayPal, together with SpaceX and Tesla Motors. There are several other consortiums in the race to make the idea a reality. One is Californian company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, which employs more than 800 professionals, from 38 different countries, within a project whose investment exceeds 100m euros. Another is Virgin Hyperloop One, which signed an agreement with Adif recently, to build an innovation centre in Bobadilla, Antequera, a Spanish village in Malaga, to investigate the Hyperloop possibilities.

A home for super-rich, and their super yachts!

MALAGA is getting a mighty marina for mega yachts of the super-rich, and bidding has been opened for the space at the Marques de Guadiaro dock, in the city’s port. With the maximum bid set at 9.5m euros, interested investors have three months to make their offers, before a winner is announced in February. The new marina will accommodate up to 40 vessels, from 30-100m in length, and will cover 41,484sq/m of water and 4,830sq/m of land. There will also be a 770-metre pier. It comes after the announcement that the famous Four Seasons hotel is also coming, in a bid to bring “more glamour” and battle the area’s seasonality. The luxury hotel will be built on the beach-front, and the first brick was laid last Friday, attended by the who’s who of business and politics in Andalucia.

The entire project has been described as “huge”, which will bring back some “glamour” to the tourism hotspot. It follows a rise in loutish behaviour from boozedup tourists in the summer months, which tarnished once-upmarket areas like Puerto Banus. The land is owned by Villa Padierna Hotels & Resorts, and occupies 700m of beach. The luxury hotel, the brainchild of architect Richard Meier, has been described by those involved in the project as “a marvel”. Much like its Miami and Dubai counterparts, the complex will include private residences, as well as hotel rooms. And it is hoped it will kick-start a “new era” in luxury tourism in Marbella. Ricardo Arranz, President of project partners Villa Padierna, said: “Marbella and Madrid need the glamour that these types of brands give.” The Four Seasons will be the first in Spain, opening its doors within three months.

Ouch! The man who didn’t mind the gap! FIREFIGHTERS have, dramatically, rescued a young man who didn’t mind the gap! Instead, he fell between a railway carriage and the station platform.

One firefighter went on to the track to support the man, while colleagues with hydraulic tools forced open a gap between the platform and the carriage. A brigade spokesperson said, thankfully: “He was bruised, but conscious, and in good condition, and he could move all his limbs.” Once released, the man was taken to hospital for observation. The incredible scene was captured by a passenger

on the train in Argentina, after the station’s staff were alerted to the incident. There are reports that, prior to the incident, he had been drinking alcohol, and had been involved in a scuffle.

Minister’s happy to meet the expat mainland groups

ROBIN Walker, Britain’s Department for Exiting the EU Minister, met Spanish Government ministers and members of the business community, to discuss the Brexit issue in Madrid on Sunday.

He also took part in a round-table discussion on citizens’ rights, with officials from groups representing UK nationals in Spain. Members of Brexpats in Spain, Bremain in Spain, as well as ECREU and EuroCitizens, were welcomed to the British Embassy by Tim Hemmings, Deputy Head of Mission. There, they spent time with various members of the Embassy and consular teams, discussing issues including health and social care, outreach and communications. The aim was to provide the citizens’ groups’ representatives with a greater insight into the work the Embassy network does on behalf of UK nationals, provide an update on the progress

of the Brexit negotiations and respond to any questions and concerns. Minister Walker said: “I was pleased to meet with representatives of the British expat community, and update them about what the government is doing to safeguard their rights, post-Brexit. “I also valued the opportunity to hear their concerns about residency, pensions, onward movement and voting rights, and the uncertainty that many of them still feel about what Brexit means for them and their families. “Securing the rights of citizens has always been our top priority. The draft Withdrawal Agreement will secure the rights of UK nationals living in Spain, as well as Spanish citizens and their family members living in the UK. “But, in the unlikely event we leave without a deal, the Prime Minister has confirmed that all EU citizens, resident in the UK before 29th March 2019, will be able to stay. “And I want British expats in Spain to know that, during my meetings, I have underlined how valued and significant it would be if the Spanish Government now

offered them the same reassurance.” HMA Simon Manley said: “There are 180,000 Spanish people living in the UK, and some 300,000 British people have chosen to make Spain their home. “The strong people-topeople links are at the heart of our bilateral relationship with Spain. And that is why I am pleased that Robin Walker was able to meet with representatives of UK nationals’ citizens’ rights groups in Spain, as well as the Spanish Government. “Meanwhile, as the negotiations continue, both the Embassy and consulates will continue with the outreach events we have planned through Spain, with some 20 events planned between now and the end of the year. “In the meantime, I continue to urge all UK nationals living in Spain to ensure that you are correctly registered, and stay up-to-date with the latest news. “For that, you can sign up for email alerts and visit the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk, as well as follow our Brits in Spain social-media channels, including on Facebook.”

Nuclear Agency has come clean!

THE Spanish Nuclear Agency has admitted that six sites in Spain have radioactive contamination, even though none of the zones listed by the Nuclear Security Council (CSN), is officially classified as contaminated ground.

That’s because Spain has yet to produce a formal inventory of sites affected by radioactive leaks, a full decade after a royal decree ordered one to be compiled. The CSN argues that the Nuclear Energy Law needs to be amended before the inventory can go ahead. But, since 2008, no governments have made moves to achieve this. In November, 1970, several dozen litres of highly radioactive liquid, from a spent nuclear fuel

reprocessing plant, were reported to have leaked from the Juan Vigon National Nuclear Energy Centre, inside Madrid’s university campus. The liquid spilled into the sewer system and reached the Manzanares River, making its way to the Jarama River, the adjoining irrigation canal, and into the Tagus River. The Franco regime is said to have kept quiet about the accident, and also the existence of contaminated soil, which it collected after draining the Jarama canal. The gathered earth, believed to be contaminated, was, apparently, buried in eight ditches alongside the waterway, and the sites still have no warning signs. A CSN spokesperson said the Ecological Transition Ministry was working on legal changes, to allow for the approval of an official list of contaminated sites in Spain.

Plastic horror for poor deer

THIS shocking picture of a roe deer, with its head stuck inside a plastic water bottle, has gone viral in Spain to remind people to dispose of their plastic waste more responsibly. The photographer, Mentxu Sotelo, who shared the image with the TV3 station, said he was “outraged” when he saw the distressed animal in the Serra de l’Obac, on the

Camí de la Pastora, near Seville. “We found this poor roe deer. which had put its head inside the plastic bottle and could not remove it,” he said. “We tried to grab it, but it fell into the ravine below and we could not do anything. I think, in this case, that an image is worth a thousand words.” Another distressing image of a cat, with its head stuck inside a plastic water bottle, has also gone viral now.

Brexit news helps to strengthen the pound By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

Staying on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively. So find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks.

The pound has been bolstered by Brexit news over recent weeks, although a GBP/EUR exchange

rate rise hasn’t been replicated against the US dollar. With little interruption, the pound/euro exchange rate has risen from an opening rate of 1.11 euros, to 1.13. On the other side, EUR/GBP has dropped from £0.89 to the £0.88£0.87 region. Less impressively, GBP/ USD opened at $1.30, and hit highs of $1.31 and lows of $1.29, over the past two weeks, but has returned to the $1.30 range. EUR/ USD has fallen from $1.17 to $1.14. The pound has advanced against the

euro over the past two weeks, thanks to tentative hopes for an early Brexit agreement.

UK data has been less supportive, showing slower Q2 GDP growth, and sluggish

construction-andservices-sector activity. Despite the negative UK data, GBP/EUR still advanced, thanks to high uncertainty about the Italian budget. Italy’s new coalition government proposed a budget that exceeded EU spending limits, which led to a tense standoff. The pound couldn’t completely overpower the US dollar over the past fortnight, with news of a new, North-American trade deal, supporting the US currency. Over the next two weeks, the main UK data to watch out for will cover GDP growth, wages, unemployment, inflation and retail sales. Forecasts aren’t too supportive, as slowing GDP and wage growth is predicted, alongside lower inflation rates and retail sales. Brexit talks could prove the wildcard, especially if a pound-

boosting breakthrough is announced. Euro traders will have Eurozone industrial production stats in focus this week, and negative results could push the euro down against the pound. Beyond this, next week’s news is all about Eurozone inflation. A forecastmatching rise for September’s reading could trigger a sharp EUR/GBP exchangerate rise. Sticking with the trend, US inflation rate figures are out this week. September’s stats could cause the US dollar to fall against the pound, if they show an as-expected slowdown. Further ahead, the US dollar could advance on news of rising retail sales next week, along with Federal-Reserve minutes, that point to multiple, interest-rate hikes in 2019. Armchair Britain BBC1, 11.45

Today’s Armchair destination is South Wales and the Valleys. Miriam Margolyes is our guide as we explore this enchanting corner of Britain where we’ll bask on the beach at Barry, remember long lost Tiger Bay and go for a spin in a Welsh sports car. Along the way we’ll head down the mines, hear some heavenly male voice choirs and even meet a genuine Welsh witch on our wonderful Welsh whistle-stop tour.

Peston ITV1, 22.45

Robert Peston brings his political magazine show to Wednesday nights to provide viewers with an fresh, intelligent and lively perspective on the big matters of the day in a brand new slot. Promising a stellar line-up of guests from across the political spectrum as well as cultural figures, Peston will feature major interviews with Westminster heavy hitters, topical guests and the very latest political gossip from inside the bubble. Co-presenter Anushka Asthana will help Peston fuel the conversation in the studio and online, with updates from social media taking in perspectives from viewers, experts and key-players throughout the programme. As the Autumn nights darken and the political temperature rises, with Brexit looming and politicians returning to work after a long hot summer off, Peston aims to shine a light on the stories you might have missed and to be at the heart of national debate. Peston says: “Britain is on the verge of making history. The stakes could not be higher, but so too are the uncertainties. What kind of Brexit will we have? Is Brexit certain?

They arrive in style, on a yacht from Sardinia and Gordon challenges Fred to a swimming race to the shore. With Gino preferring to stay onboard drinking champagne, Fred makes it to the beach first and a disgruntled Gordon trudges up the sand: “Fred swam over the top of me, elbowed me in the head. You know, that’s the French…” It quickly becomes apparent they have landed on one of the many nudist beaches on the Mediterranean coast and Gordon has to endure the attentions of a naked selfie hunter. Hoping for a swift exit, Gordon and Fred are then horrified by the arrival of a naked Gino, who is eager to embrace the beach’s dress code.

A magical, musical obsession! Keddy’s Entertainment loves to get involved with different events on the island, whether it’s managing an overall event, or simply supplying artistes to enhance customers’ experiences. From the Hard Rock Café to the UK X factor, we have seen it all, and this weekend is no different, when, once again, we are proud to be involved in the Tenerife Entertainment Awards. Last year, we opened the carnival-themed Tenerife Entertainment Awards with the superb African acrobats, followed by the carnival group Ritmo Sureno. This year, for the first time, we are teaming up with Rendezvous Restaurant, Golf del Sur, to host the 2018 VIP pre-party, for all the nominees and sponsors, so we thought we would let you know about the acts that will be performing this Sunday. Obsession Duo, Ray and Chrissie, will be performing live music, as they have been for over 25 years, starting in pubs and clubs in the south of England. Ray was a member of

Mungo Jerry for many years, enjoying worldwide success with hits including “In the Summertime”, spending eight weeks at the No. 1 spot, in between working with David Essex in the film “That’ll Be the Day”, and playing bass on the smash hit single “Rock On”. In the Eighties, Ray had a top-40 hit as the singer with the band UK Players, with the song “Love’s Gonna Get You”, and was privileged to support the legendary Marvin Gaye, on tour. Chrissie, always known as “The Wild One”, has retained her legendary, distinctive hair styles over the years. She began her musical career on the oboe (one of the hardest musical instruments to learn!),

playing in youth wind bands, and, in the Eighties, punk music took her direction to the saxophone. Chrissie plays alto, soprano and tenor saxophone, as well as percussion. Nowadays, Obsession Duo seem to have a niche, twisting classic songs into a jazzy, lounge, chill-out style, which sits wonderfully in restaurants and terraces, for a laid-back atmosphere. Mind you, there’s always the chance to “rock up” for a private party, when requested. Obsession Duo are delighted to be performing at the TEAs’ pre-VIP party for Keddy’s Entertainment, starting their set with a little “chilled-out twist” on classic favourites such as “Walking On Sunshine”, “Every Breath You Take”, “Wonderwall” and “Sweet Dreams”, and then adding a little of their own “Obsession Twist”! They will be finishing with a tadmore-upbeat repertoire, depending on the audience, on the day! Ray and Chrissie are looking forward to what will, no doubt, be a memorable party! Then we have the magical showman himself, Oliver Van Damme, performing close-up magic for all the sponsors and nominees. We asked him a few questions, to get to know him that little bit more. Keddy’s Entertainment: What age did you realise that your future would be in magic? Oliver: I remember, at 17, feeling completely captivated by the world of

magic, during a close-up magic session by artist Lino Ajello, who later became my teacher and mentor. It took a full year of intensive training to learn how to perfect my first, magic tricks. It was Lino who inspired me to aim for perfection, before showing anything to a live audience. KE: Do you remember how your first magic show felt? Oliver: Absolutely! I was 18, and hooked, immediately, to performing for an audience. During the following six years, I did as many shows as I could, to practise my tricks: kids’ parties, family reunions, street shows ... they all contributed to the confidence and experience I have today. KE: You were born in Belgium. When did you start travelling? Oliver: At 24, I started performing internationally, and had shows in Holland, Luxemburg and Switzerland. Later, I decided to spend my summers performing in Tenerife. That’s where I got in contact with Venture restaurants, and landed a fulltime job, entertaining their guests with my close-up magic. I decided to stay in Tenerife just a bit longer. KE: You are now performing in hotels all over the island. Is this you dream job? Oliver: Definitely! In 2016, I started a stage show in hotels all over Tenerife, such as Palacio Guia de Isora, Bahia del Duque, Jardines del Teide, and Gran Hotel Costa Adeje - just to name a few. KE: If someone wanted to know more about you, and where you perform, how

could they get in touch? Oliver: People can follow me on Instagram: @ olivervandammemagic or Facebook: @ olivervandammemagic So, an interesting guy who will be dazzling everyone with his amazing talent, this weekend. As you can imagine, all events take a lot of planning behind the scenes, from setting up all the sound equipment, to making sure the artistes have a plan of action, in order to maximise the customer experience. Fortunately, we have Natalie, our Tenerife entertainment manager, overseeing the event on the day. She is working closely with everyone involved, including Rendezvous Restaurant staff, and making sure that everyone has a great time. We are so looking forward to the VIP pre-party, and a few of us from Keddy’s Entertainment will be staying to cheer on all the nominees, enjoying a perfect way to celebrate all entertainment on this island. We know how hard everyone works to make sure the thousands of tourists have a wonderful time all year round, so that they come back year after year. In our eyes, just attending the Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and celebrating, makes us all winners on the day! To book any of the acts mentioned, e-mail info@ keddysentertainment.com or call our office MondayFriday, on 922 096 975. But, for now, have a great weekend, because we certainly will ...

Sweet as nectar! A nectarine is fuzzless variety peach, but isn't cross between peach and a plum.

a of a a

Nectarines, like peaches, probably originated in China over 2,000 years ago, and were cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece and Rome. They were grown in Great Britain in the late 16th or early 17th centuries, and were introduced to America by the Spanish. The word “nectarine means as sweet as nectar, and this is, very likely, the obvious origin of the name. Today, California grows over 95% of the nectarines produced in the US. Peach seeds may occasionally grow into trees that bear nectarines, and nectarine seeds may grow into trees that bear either nectarines or peaches. It is not possible to know which fruit will grow on trees grown from nectarine seeds, so nectarine branches are grafted onto peach trees to guarantee a crop of nectarines. Nectarines are similar to peaches, but have a smooth skin. Eating

them is a healthy way to include many vitamins and minerals in your diet. Choose a firm nectarine for a nutritious snack, or serve them sliced with a drizzle of honey for a nutrientpacked dessert. However you add nectarines to your diet, you will be doing something to benefit the quality of your health. Beta-carotene Fruits and vegetables with bright red, orange and yellow colours often contain a good amount of betacarotene. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant that turns into Vitamin A in the body. If you do not consume enough beta-carotene, you may become deficient in Vitamin A, which can lead to abnormal bone development, reproductive disorders and, in severe cases, death. Beta-carotene also supports healthy eyes, and may prevent diseases like macular degeneration. Vitamin C The Vitamin C in fruits and vegetables, including nectarines, is considered an important antioxidant that helps promote good health, and may also have the power to protect your body from certain illnesses

and diseases. Vitamin C may also protect you from toxins and pollutants that cause illness. Lutein Lutein is a nutrient that has been receiving more attention because of its health-protective benefits. Your body uses lutein to support healthy eyes and skin, and is also considered to be an important antioxidant because it helps

destroy the presence of free radicals in your body, which may decrease your risk of chronic diseases like cancer. Most humans do not get enough lutein in their diet, but adding nectarines can help you increase how much you consume. Other important nutrients In addition to the most significant nutrients that nectarines offer, they also supply a wide range of

other vitamins and minerals you need to eat each day. A one-cup serving of nectarines supplies 2.4 g of fibre and 1.5 g of protein. A serving of nectarine will also provide 9 mg of calcium, 13 mg of magnesium and 287 mg of potassium. Nectarines also contain iron, folic acid and Vitamin K, as well as naturally-occurring sugars that help provide energy.

Cats Welfare News

Please dig deep!

AS many of you will know, 55 black cats were recently discovered in Los Silos, living in cages in appalling conditions. They were very thin, and many were in need of medical treatment.

This is a huge exercise, so Cats Welfare is joining hands with other charities to resolve this matter. We will soon be taking 10 of these unfortunate animals into our care, and are appealing for money donations towards neutering, as well as treatments for worms and fleas. There is also the cost of their food, and any other medical needs any of them may have. Please give what you can for these unfortunate kitties.

Even the smallest amount will help. Please send donations to our PayPal account info@cats-welfaretenerife.com, or take cash donations, in an envelope marked “Los Silos cats”, to the Cats Welfare shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). We’re open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We are also appealing for food to be dropped off at Don Perro vets in Las Chafiras, or our shop. Please mark the food “Los Silos cats”. Anyone who can either foster or adopt one of these poor cats, please let us know. Vet bills and food will be covered by donations. Several of the cats have been lucky enough to find foster homes already. Many thanks to everyone who has worked so tirelessly to improve the lives of these innocent animals. Adoptions

We have a large number of kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, loving homes. If you adopt a second kitten, it will be neutered and microchipped, free of charge. Also, it will be wormed and deflead, and be given its first kitten injections. This applies to ALL black kittens, not just the second. As well as kittens, we have several adult cats available, male and female,

ranging from 18 months to seven years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook, or ring/WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. Wanted At the moment, we are particularly in need of ladies’ shorts and cropped trousers, and men’s shorts.

Please drop them into our shop on Golf del Sur. Charity table events Taking place tomorrow (Saturday), are our tabletop sales at Koala Sur in Las Chafiras, and Koala Adeje. As always, we’ll be selling beautiful creations, gifts etc. Any food donations for the cats and kittens in our care would be greatly appreciated. Our shop We are open every day of the year, from 10am-6pm. We always need good quality clothes and books, as well as other items in excellent condition. We also welcome food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc., for the cats and kittens in our care. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Amigos de Gillian Banks

Amigos de Gillian Banks THE Amigos de Gillian Banks is a charity, based in Tenerife, which helps the under-privileged children on the island. We support two children’s centres, in Granadilla and El Fraile, each catering for 25 children, aged 3- 16.

Doris Rogers

A memorial service for the late Doris Rogers will be held at: Tenerife family Church, Coral Mar Square, Costa Del Silencio, on November 12th at 6pm.

We support the centres by purchasing school uniforms, books and equipment, to enable the children to be equal within the school environment, and facilitate their learning, by providing everything they need to study. We also run planting projects with the children, on a finca in Granadilla, teaching them about vegetables. They learn how to plant and nurture them, before taking the produce home for the family to eat. We help with the renovation of houses, when conditions become so bad that the children suffer, and, recently, undertook a project to install running and hot water in a property. Prior to this, the family were having wash everything, dishes and themselves, in cold water, in the bathroom bidet. We provide equipment for the centres, to ensure the children have a vibrant environment, to part live in during the school day,

and we supply computers, to enable homework to be completed, after school hours. Support is given by the centre staff, to ensure that educational targets are met, and exceeded, if possible. Each week, we provide two teachers to go into the centres to teach English, to widen the children’s chances of employment and communication, in their future lives. We also managed to secure a twoweek scholarship at the British Language School in the UK, for a child to undertake an Englishspeaking course, live with an English family to improve English-speaking skills, and see the sights of England. We paid for a passport and clothes, and gave spending money, to make the visit enjoyable, as well as educational. We run events to raise funds, and bring 56 people from our home town of Rotherham, each October, to perform four shows on the island, to raise money for the children. Arona council support us by providing the Infanta Leonor Theatre, at a reduced rate . Showstoppers 2018 will be held at the Infant Leonor Theatre in Los Cristianos on Monday, 29th October

at 7.30pm. Tickets are available, online, through the theatre’s box office, or, in person, from Santa Maria Estate Agency in Adeje. We hope you will support our charity which is run entirely by volunteers, with no paid staff employed for any of the tasks undertaken. All monies go to help

underprivileged children in Granadilla and Arona children centres. If you require any further information, please contact me: Martyn Howells Chairman Amigos de Gillian Banks 0044 7836 259146 howellsmartyn@aol.com

How to choose the right garage By Emma

from Motorworld

WHEN you are deciding on who is going to repair your car, there are so many things to consider. For most people, the costs are the primary concern, with often little regard paid to the facilities being offered. Experience, legalities etc. are considered to be secondary. Sometimes, they are not even considered as being important at all! Garages in Tenerife

By Val Sainsbury

come in all shapes and sizes, from main dealers to your little “back-street” variety, and all those in between. We are going to point out the differences, so that when you do need to use/select a garage, you make the right, informed decision. Some people choose cheap options, only to find that they end up needing to have the work redone, or that the work charged for hasn't all been undertaken. All garage premises are different, from the basic to the upmarket, high-end type. Think BMW, Mercedes, Porsche etc., down to the dingy, although-perfectlypractical, oldfashioned workshops. So, which one should you choose, and why?

Is a garage legal, or not? The most-important thing to consider in Spain is whether or not the garage is legal. If the garage is legal, it will display a prominent, outside plaque with a distinctive number, which is assigned by Industria to the said garage. This is only awarded once the premises and its owners/staff have adhered to very strict regulations, set out for this type of business. The older-style licences were identifiable by two letters, followed by a number: TF (identifying that the garage is in Tenerife) 1234, for example. This number is individual to those particular business premises, and the types of work

ITV station will not accept the repairs. In addition to this plaque, the premises must also have a licence for the removal of contaminated waste. This licence is not exclusive to a garage, and you may have seen similar plaques elsewhere in doctor surgeries, hospitals and large restaurants, to name a few. If a garage does not display a plaque, then it probably isn't legal, with regards to the rules of Industria, the body concerned with this type of activity. That does not mean the mechanics and the work is not, or will not, be to an acceptable standard, but it is important to bear this in mind, and choose carefully. Pricing and signs

Again, the garage is obliged, by law, to display its hourly rate and opening hours, and various signs concerning the safety of its staff and customers. The most-common ones seen for customers are “do not pass”, “no smoking” etc. The garage’s insurance does not cover people not involved in the business, ie customers who enter into the workplace. In the case of an accident or injury, the insurance company would not be liable, so the garage must ensure that such signs are displayed. If a customer ignores them, it is not the garage’s responsibility in the event of an accident. In other words, if the sign says do not pass, stay out!

Get in the swim to improve your life!

SWIMMING is one of the most popular sports. As well as being fun, it is a great way to keep fit, stay healthy and make friends. Swimming is a healthy pastime that you can continue throughout your life, and is a low-impact activity that has many physical and mental health benefits. Swimming for fun Swimming is a great recreational activity for people of all ages, and is also a good way to relax and feel good. Competitive swimming Some people who enjoy swimming want to take it to a competitive level. This can provide the health benefits of a vigorous workout, as well as the fun and thrill of competition. The main strokes used in competitive swimming

they are legally able to carry out. The old-style plaques showed various symbols, identifying what work that garage was authorised to do. For example, a spanner denoted mechanical work, or a hammer and paint gun, chapa-pintura, or body repairs, as one would know it in English. The new-style plaques are similar, but in a slightly different format. The numbers being, for example, 06 denoting the year, then A452, followed by eight numbers. Both are equally legal. It is important to note that any work carried out for an ITV retest, that requires a factura, has to be carried out by an Industria-registered garage. If it isn't, the

are breaststroke, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. The distances swum in competition swimming can vary from 50 metres in a pool, to much further distances in open water. Health benefits Swimming is a great workout because you need to move your whole body against the resistance of the water. *it is a good all-round

activity because it keeps your heart rate up, but takes some of the impact stress off your body *it builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness *it helps maintain a healthy weight, heart and lungs *it tones muscles and builds strength *it provides an allover body workout, as nearly all your muscles

are used Other benefits of swimming Swimming has many other benefits including: *being a relaxing and peaceful form of exercise *alleviating stress *improving coordination, balance and posture *improving flexibility *providing good, lowimpact therapy for some injuries and conditions *providing a pleasant way to cool down on a hot day *being available in many places. You can swim in swimming pools, beaches, lakes, dams and rivers. Make sure that the environment you choose to swim in is safe. Getting started in swimming is easy. It is a sport for all age groups, skill and fitness levels Before you start: *make sure you know how to swim

*choose a safe environment *warm up and stretch your muscles and joints before entering the water *have plenty of fluids on hand, and drink regularly *don't overdo it if you're just starting out. *see your doctor if you haven't exercised for a long time Things to remember

*as well as being fun, swimming is a great way to keep fit and well, and make friends * it is a healthy activity that you can continue for a lifetime *swimming is a lowimpact activity that has many physical and mental health benefits *make sure you know how to swim, and do so in a safe environment.

CD Tenerife

Tenerife in turmoil TENERIFE, facing a crisis following this terrible defeat against RCD Mallorca on Saturday, were dominated from start to finish. The outcome means that they still have just one win so far this season, achieved last week, and they have slumped back to the relegation zone, in 19th place. The fans and press are now questioning Tenerife, along with new coach Jose Luis Oltra. They all want to know what is going on, and what Tenerife can do to get out of this desperate position they find themselves in. Mallorca came out quickly and scored after four minutes, following a cracking move which opened up a sleepy Tenerife defence. The ball was tucked away nicely by Aridai, leaving keeper Dani Hernandez sprawling. Tenerife hardly attacked the Mallorcan goal in the first half, except for a lame header, from which Mallorca broke upfield and doubled their lead, with a scrappy goal from a Lago

RCD Mallorca 4 CD Tenerife 1

Junior header, after 29 minutes. It followed crosses from Fran and Aridai, and both should have been cleared by the Tenerife defence, but it simply summed up their day. With a two-goal deficit at half-time, coach Oltra needed to work some magic in the second half. In fairness, Tenerife started positively and had three attempts in five minutes, which had to be saved by Mallorca keeper Reina. Then, in the 52nd minute,

Tenerife forced a corner, which was taken beautifully, attacking the six-yard box. The ball glanced off the head of Salvador Ruiz for an own-goal, which narrowed the gap to 2-1. But the scoreline hardly bothered Mallorca, who resumed their attack, and, four minutes later, Raillo made a superb, 30-yard pass to man-of-the-match Aridai, who laid the ball off to Abdón Prats. He found himself one-on-one with Dani, who didn’t stand a chance.

Athletics

Farah is far and away the fastest MO Farah reached another career milestone on Sunday, when he outran his rivals in the Chicago Marathon to record his first victory at the distance.

In wet and windswept conditions, he also set a European record of 2hr 5min 11sec, which beat Sondre Nordstad Moen’s time by 37 seconds, and carved 70 seconds off his own British mark, set in London last April. If there were doubts about how Farah would cope with serious, road-running opponents, this trip, around the damp streets of Chicago, dispelled them, as his speed killed off a strong field over the final three miles. Having seen off three close rivals in the last half-mile, with one remaining, he surged away from Mosinet Geremew, the field’s quickest runner, and left him 13 seconds behind at the finish line.

So, 3-1 to Mallorca, who, by now, were dominating Tenerife, whose heads went down… and their afternoon became even worse. Mallorca stole the ball on the centre spot and released a pass to Alex López, who, with just Dani ahead, chipped it nonchalantly over his head into an open goal, to complete a one-sided victory. At training on Monday, downcast captain Suso told the press that Saturday was “a painful defeat in a match in which we did not give a good perfor-

mance”. He added: “We haven’t found an explanation for what happened, but we have looked at the mistakes we made so as not make them again, especially as it cost us two goals in 10 minutes.” Coach Oltra spent 40 minutes with the squad before training, analysing the game and trying to lift their spirits. But there is a lot of hard work ahead, in what is going to be a long season, and it all starts this Sunday, at home to Lugo.

MotoGP

Champion’s horror crash

WORLD champion Jorge Lorenzo was rushed to hospital, after a crash during practice for last Sunday’s Thailand Grand Prix, which split his bike in two. The Mallorca-born legend lost control of the back end of his Ducati at 150km/hr during the second practice

round on the Burinam circuit. He hurtled through the air and crashed into the ground, checking a damaged leg before anything else. But despite being carried off the track on a stretcher, medics passed him fit for racing, as long as his leg was not too painful. Sensibly, though, the withdrew from the inaugural GP in Thailand, because of the injuries he suffered.

The Pub’s big Lock-out! THE Loch-In’s much- depleted, four-man team travelled to The Pub, and found their match with Grizzly’s boys an impossible task, going down 7-1. In fairness, though, the home side were in top form, anyway.

John was again player of the night, when Scooters ‘A’ visited Legends, for whom Catherine had a 3-0 singles win. And Ed’s 55 finish won the two points in Legends 6-2 success. League leaders Suters 20:30 Crew showed Palms Pool Bar no mercy, as they notched up another 8-0 scoreline. And Andy’s 180 helped Pas O Nadas ‘A’ to a 7-1

victory over Mad Hatters. However, many games were close, and the result could have been so different. Nevertheless, just two points now separate the top four teams in Division 1. The battle at the top of Division 2 continues, with Emerald Lounge ‘B’ taking the trebles game, and a 5-3 win against Sundowners. That maintained their slight advantage over The Loch-In Bullseyes, who also won by the same score over Emerald Lounge ‘A’ team. The Playgirls refused to give up when Nomads visited, the match going to the wire, with the girls claiming a 5-3 win. Naughty Nautas welcomed Clouseau’s, but found themselves on the wrong end of a 5-3 score.

Footgolf ’s coming home!

Maikel Álvarez hopes to make a big impact at the weekend

TENERIFE footgolf player Maikel Álvarez is hoping to win the Spanish Open, which is taking place in Adeje this weekend. The game, in which a player attempts to kick a football into a 21-inch cup in as few shots as possible, is a growing sport.

Zeben Díaz, who beat Álvaraz to win the world title, says the Adeje Cup takes place in the runup to the World Cup, in Marrakesh. The Adeje Cup is two tournaments in one, because it is recognised an international event, as well as the Spanish Open. Álverez is second in the world rankings, but hopes to claim top spot this weekend.

The competition takes place from today (Friday) until Sunday (14th Oct) at Los Lagos Golf in Costa Adeje, and is being broadcast live, via social media. Up to 130 players are expected to compete, with a 7,000-euro prize for the winner. Among the participants are top players Ben Clarke, Nico García and Jamie Cullum.

Spurs lead the way, but they’re all queueing up

IT’S a far cry from White Hart Lane, but Tottenham Hotspur will soon be waving goodbye to their temporary home at Wembley Stadium, and making their way to a posh, new, £850m home. But they’re not the only club seeking a new look. Real Madrid announced plans for a £500m renovation of their Santiago Bernabeu last month, following Barcelona and their 2016 “Espai Barca” project revelation in 2016. Roma President Jim Pallotta is also determined to give the Italian club their own home, after 65 years of groundsharing the Stadio Olimpico with fierce rivals Lazio. The Stadio della Roma was finally given planning permission to be built in December last year, but it hit

a snag when the owner of the proposed site, Virgina Raggi, rejected the proposal. A compromise has since been reached, and the new stadium, costing around one billion euros, will be built on an old race-track, south-west of Rome. Barcelona’s Espai Barca project, which involves renovating the Nou Camp to drag it into the 21st Century, will increase crowd capacity, as well as adding a roof, and underground parking plus improving its access to Wi-Fi! The project goes beyond just the stadium, with improvements planned for the entire Barcelona campus, including a 12,000-seater arena for other Barca sports teams, such as basketball.
