It’s all-systems-go for the roadworks

Cont. from Front

In a statement yesterday (Thursday), the Mayor said: “We are glad that these works are taking priority, as they are of extreme necessity, and are finally getting the green light.” The workmen’s huts will be installed in Oroteanda in the coming weeks, and work will begin on the revamp, before the end of the year. A spokesman from the Canarian Government’s Department of Infrastructure and Transport of the Government said: “We have been informed that the deadlines are being met, and the contract is already signed. We are now just waiting for the links and service routes to be included in the project, and then work can begin.” He added: “We would have liked the workers’ huts to have been in place long before, although I understand that, every day, the administrative procedures are more complicated. “Even so, we are very happy with the start of this priority work, and are aware of the extreme need of the municipality, as well

THE 43-yearold son of a Gran Canaria couple, who were found dead at their home in Las Alcaravaneras, Las Palmas, on Monday afternoon, has been arrested by police.

Marcus Hernández, believed to have axed his father to death, was his 70-year-old mother’s carer. But Maria Dolores Sanchez Garcia had been a bed-ridden, Alhzeimer’s sufferer for a decade, and had, it seemed, passed away naturally, the previous day. The couple’s bodies were discovered on the fourth floor of their home in the urban area of Calle Italia, around 4pm. And José Rafael Hernández, 76, who was a lawyer and a poet, had suffered a violent death. In the background, there appeared to be major differences of opinion

as the region and the island. At last, there is light at the end of the tunnel.” Work will begin in Oroteanda, with the construction of two lateral roundabouts, as well as the bridge, which will cross the motorway. Another phase will see the service roads connecting Oroteanda and Las Chafiras, where they will build another large roundabout. The work will take place on the TF-1, between kilometres 62 and 64.5, as well as in sections of the TF-65, TF-652 and TF-655. The investment is 21.7 million euros, for these to be carried out. Meanwhile, there was a harsh reminder yesterday (Thursday) of what motorway travellers can still expect, before the 10year plan comes to fruition. It wasn’t just the rain which arrived early yesterday morning, but also the frustrated mood of drivers, stuck in traffic stretching back for many kilometres in the North, following a roundabout crash. True, there were more cars on the TF-5 motorway, which is normally the case when it rains. But the congestion was compounded because of

the accident, on the Padre Anchieta roundabout, in the La Laguna area. It brought traffic to a complete standstill, replicating precisely what occurs in most Tenerife rush-hour areas, morning and evening, Monday to Friday, such as the TF-1 junctions at Guimar, Adeje, Los Cristianos and Las Americas, along with others. On the official Twitter account for Tenerife’s traffic information, posted by the Cabildo, drivers are always informed of the current

situation, as they were on this occasion. They were also asked to be patient because the Tenerife Government was fully aware of how frustrated people were, stuck inside their vehicles, and at a complete standstill. The traffic jam extended some 20km along the TF5, passing several towns, including Guamasa, Tacoronte El Sauzal, La Matanza and La Victoria. Every day, from San Isidro to beyond Los Cristianos, the traffic almost comes to a halt, with drivers

commuting to work, or carrying out the school-run. It has remained like this for best part of a year, specifically between 8.309-30am. And it all starts again between 4.45-6pm, when vehicles are virtually at a standstill, from Adeje to the Parque de la Reina turn-off. Yet hope remains for the long-term, thanks to San Miguel Council’s announcement. Until then, however, there appears to be little motorway freedom for traffic on the island’s main carriageways. between father and son, about how the latter was caring for his mother. What could have exacerbated the problem was the dad, saying, publicly, that his son had been threatening him. During the early hours of Monday, neighbours noticed that the house lights were lit, which was unusual. Then, when it became light, one neighbour noticed the son heading towards the local hardware store, where, supposedly, he bought the axe… for one purpose only! The murder happened during the afternoon, and medics, in the ambulance which arrived at the home, could only confirm that the mother was dead, and that her husband had been battered to death, with an axe! The entire affair has stunned neighbours, who have been left baffled. One said: “His passion was to look after his mum. He was completely dedicated, and such a polite man.”

Sharp-eyed officers arrest shellfish pair

GUARDIA Civil officers, from the nature protection department Seprona, stopped a car carrying three fishermen, as well as three refrigerators, containing mixed shellfish weighing 63kg. The haul comprised cockles, limpets and barnacles, which were all caught illegally. Acting on a hunch, the officers had intercepted the trio, following ongoing surveillance of underwater, spear-fishing activities in La Gomera. During surveillance, they were also informed by the Canarian Government’s Fishery Inspectors that there could be illegal transporting of shellfish,

between La Gomera and Tenerife. The law states that the capture of specific shellfish, as well as the transportation between Islands, is not allowed. The total sum seized by officers added up to 63kg of shellfish, but the maximum weight allowed to be caught, for a person with a fishing permit, is 10kg. But only one of the men had a permit, and, because of this, the officers let him to take his 10kg allowance from the haul. The remaining shellfish were handed over to a La Gomera charity on La Gomera. Two of the three men stopped by officers, who were fined for not having the correct paperwork, are awaiting an appearance before a judge.

Stolen sculpture is back in place SANTA Cruz City’s Culture Councillor Jose Carlos Acha, who pleaded for the return of a prizewinning sculpture, has had his wish granted, by a rueful thief! The sculpture, stolen from the popular Avenida de Anaga last Friday, reappeared in the city’s Calle Celia Cruz, in Cabo Llanos town, on Wednesday. With it came an apologetic note from the thief, who blamed his action on the alcohol he had consumed. The sculpture, one of three featuring a chicharro (small blue fish), had been on view following a competition, held jointly by the City Council and the Cepsa Foundation, at the beginning of the year. The contest attracted 45 entrants, whose aim was to create art-work or sculptures to decorate the city, and the winner, Liseth Rodriguez, finished ahead of two runners-up. Exhibits from all three were chosen to decorate the Avenue,

but Lizeth’s sculpture, a huge, glass-mirrored chicharro, stole the show, and, once in position, it stood 2.3 metres high on the Avenue. Now, her eye-catching artwork has been returned, the thief writing: “It was me who has caused the fuss and I’m apologising profusely. When I did what I did, I wasn’t fully aware of my action. I was very, very drunk, and when the

realisation kicked in, the walls fell down around me. “The past couple of days have been horrendous. I didn’t want to hand the piece of art over as I was embarrassed for my actions. I was frightened of spoiling my reputation, as well as losing my job. I am a normal person, and, generally, stupid acts like this don’t enter my thoughts. One more time, I’m very sorry.”

Such a big drag for tobacco smugglers A HUGE total of 11,000 king-size cigarettes and 140.5kg of tobacco, purchased in Tenerife, were found on a husband and wife at Bristol Airport last year. Igoris Terskis, 47, and Tatjana Terskaja, 47, arrived back in the UK from the island on 7th February, but were stopped and searched by a Border Force officer. They had walked through the customs’ “nothingto-declare” green channel with 561 times more than the tobacco permitted, and 27 times the cigarette entitlement. The pair, from Redruth, Cornwall, packed the goods into seven holdalls, the receipts showing that the couple had purchased them in a Tenerife shop. The duty evaded was £30,536. The couple were arrested, their haul was seized and the matter was referred to HMRC for investigation.

The probe revealed that between April 2015 and February 2017, Terskis and Terskaja had made a total of 16 trips to France, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Investigators discovered that, despite having declared a joint-income of £20,800 in 2016-17, a total

of £55,330 was deposited in cash into their bank accounts, from July to November 2016. The pair pleaded guilty at Truro Crown Court on 8th October to two counts of duty evasion on cigarettes and tobacco, which added up to £162,000.

Terskis was jailed for 26 months, while Terskaja received a 20-month sentence, suspended for two years. Richard Wilkinson, assistant director of the HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service, said: “Terskis and Terskaja were wrong to think they could get away with smuggling tobacco into the UK for their own financial gain. “The illegal tobacco trade has a harmful effect on legitimate businesses, and it deprives us of money needed to fund our vital public services. “The duty evaded on this tobacco was enough to pay the salaries of seven nurses in Cornwall for a year.” He added: “HMRC works closely with Border Force, to tackle tobacco smuggling and disrupt this illicit trade. “I urge anyone who has information about the smuggling, whether the selling or storing of illicit tobacco, to report it online to HMRC, or contact our Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887.”

Fake-goods

traders caught

A 34-STRONG group, including seven women, have been detained by National Police officers in Gran Canaria’s San Bartolome de Tirajana, for selling fake goods. Those arrested, aged 20-63 years, many of them with police records for similar, fraudulent activities, sold counterfeit goods of top commercial brands to tourists. Some 17 investigations have been carried out in commercial premises in Gran Canaria south, where the fake items, worth a total of 3,360,384 euros, have been seized. The inspections involved 17 commercial stores in a Playa del Ingles shopping centre, with police being assisted by an expert from the Ministry of Culture’s Anti-piracy Commission. Among the so-called brand-name goods seized by cops included a large number of sports shirts, sunglasses, bags and other items.

NEWS IN BRIEF Boy shot dead in tragedy

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy died after being shot in the head during a hunting accident, at Santamaría farm, in Villalba de los Alcores, Valladolid. An emergency ambulance and helicopter were scrambled, but medics confirmed the death of the boy by rifle shot at the scene. The fatal accident happened shortly after 1pm last Saturday at the farm, about five kilometres east of Villalba de los Alcores. Sources say the deceased child’s grandfather owns the El Rocío estate, also in Villalba de los Alcores, and is “very well known” in Valladolid.

Hiker’s devastating fall

A SWISS hiker was left in a critical condition after falling several metres, from the track connecting the Guro to Salto del Agua, into a steep ravine at La Gomera’s famous Valle Gran Rey. Information supplied by the Canarian Emergency Services suggested that the tourist was extremely fortunate, because there was an off-duty fire-fighter in the area, who was also hiking. He assisted the injured woman with first-aid until the emergency services arrived. The fire services from Valle Gran Rey, along with the helicopter, collaborated to ensure a safe rescue of the injured victim. She was hoisted on to a helicopter, safely, and taken to a helipad in San Sebastian, where an ambulance was waiting to transfer her to hospital. The hiker, who suffered severe head trauma, was admitted in a critical condition, with a serious brain injury. She is under close observation at the Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe hospital.

Sexual assaulter jailed

AN Almeria City court has jailed a man for a year after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in a bar in the provincial capital.

The city’s Fifth Criminal Court heard that the man saw the woman while in a bar in the Plaza Masnou de Almeria. Prosecutors told the court that the defendant, guided by his sexual desire, touched the woman’s behind as she walked through the door to the pub. The woman immediately told him to stop, warning him that she would report him to the police if he continued. And she filed her complaint with National Police the same night, after he had touched her again. The presiding judge, sentencing the offender and fining him 300 euros, said his defence was “spurious” and unconvincing. But the defendant will able to appeal against the sentence.

Woman hit by bus

A WOMAN, aged 22, was injured after being knocked down by a bus on a busy Santa Cruz road on Wednesday afternoon. The accident, on the Carretera General Rosario, happened at 3.20pm, and, when the emergency ambulance arrived, it became clear to medics that she had suffered bruising and head injuries, along with hurting her legs. Once stabilised, she was transferred to Candelaria Hospital, where she was treated, without complications.

Dryers are spinning for Adeje’s old folk THE CLC World Foundation, a nonprofit organisation, which aims to improve the lives of those in need, has donated two tumbledryers to Adeje’s Senior Citizen’s home. Organisation representatives Miriam Palazon, Richard Wafer and Leonie Lindwedel visited the home, along with Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga and Adeje Senior Citizen Councillor Cristina Carballo, to see the dryers in action. They were shown around the centre by director Carina Negrin Aguilar, meeting many of the residents on the patio, before viewing the dining area and bedrooms, as well as the large living

room. And, of course, they visited the laundry area, already making use of its new additions. Miriam told the Mayor that Foundation members were delighted “to do their bit to help people who might need it”. And they are eager to participate in other donations in the borough. They have already helped the Asociación San Juan, and are finalising their contribution to this year’s Walk for Life. The CLC World Foundation is supported by donations and grants from associations, as well as CLC World clients and employees, who have been working in Tenerife and on the Costa del Sol. Mayor Fraga said the Foundation’s aims were in parallel with those of Adeje Council, putting people first. He thanked the Foundation for its altruism,

adding that, in his area, they were always aware of people in need; people who were suffering. “And that’s where we step in,” he added. “Perhaps it’s the elderly, or families who need extra help with school materials. This is where we work in solidarity, because we know that, during our lives, no one is without needs.” Miriam Palazon, CLC World Resort Director, said: “We are open to other requests to assist where we can.” She said the Foundation worked with various associations and organisations in Tenerife, and in the Spanish peninsula, to improve the lives of those in need. “We stand ready to listen, and ready to help,” Miriam told the Mayor. “Our intention is to bring the work of the Foundation to Adeje.”

Ferry woman says she was stuck on car deck ARMAS ferries have been criticised heavily by a woman on social media, claiming that she and her 88-year-old mother had to stay on the car deck during a crossing from Los Cristianos to La Gomera. The mother suffers from Alzheimer’s, and her daughter said the ferry crew had no knowledge of how to use the stair-lift, which accessed the vehicles’ stowing area. According to the woman’s posts, the pair had to make the whole trip in the hold, inside their car, breathing all the toxic fumes circulating the area. Also, she had to put bags of ice on her mother to cool her down, because of the extreme heat. In addition, she complained, there was no bathroom access, and she was forced to use a container inside her vehicle. The shipping company insisted it was the daughter who refused to use the lift, saying that she preferred to stay in the hold with her mother. In a statement, Armas also said that its crew members would put their own lives before that of any passenger, which is why they allocated one to assist both mother and daughter, making sure that they were okay. They also said that no official complaints had been made about the incident.

Spanish man who tried to torch a local church

THE National Police have detained a 52-year-old Spaniard, believed to have tried burning down one of several Gran Canaria churches in San Batolomo de Tirajana.

He is more than familiar with the police because he has a total of 45 previous charges against him, for similar crimes, though not concerning churches, A National Police spokesperson said a call was received by the emergency services last Saturday (13th Oct) at around 11.26pm, informing them of the fire. National Police officers hurried to the site, and, on arrival, saw the church door

ablaze in various areas. Police notified the fire services straight away, and, as they awaited the fire engines, officers attempted to smother the smoke and flames with a small, mobile extinguisher, carried in their patrol car. Fire-fighters arrived shortly afterwards and soaked the wooden door with some 50 litres of water, until they were satisfied the church building was out of danger. Police circulated the area and questioned the neighbours, while searching for a witness. And one local was able to give a full description of the person responsible. It took the cops just 10 minutes to find the alleged culprit, in the Town Square, and he is now in police custody, awaiting a court appearance.

Goodbye to migrants’ barrier of razor-wire SPANISH authorities are planning to remove the razor wire on border fences in northern Africa, to help preventing injuries to thousands of migrants crossing into their territory. The Government is targeting the autonomous Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on Morocco’s Mediterranean coastline, which are recognised as migrant hotspots, in particular.

The plan is to replace razor wire with “smart” sensors, to track the numbers of migrants entering Spanish territory, although no fixed date has been set for the work to take place. Police estimate that around 3,000 African migrants are gathered in camps in the Moroccan hills, close to the two cities. Once there, they are organised by peopletraffickers, who persuade them to charge the fences, leaving many migrants and police injured. Spain’s special police squad, the Unit Against Illegal Immigration, is working

with Africa and Europe on the issue. A police source, referring to the numbers of those crossing as an “avalanche”, said: “For the police, it is like seeing shops about to open their doors for sales, with thousands of people waiting to burst through.” Spain is Europe’s leading destination for migrants, with 40,598 arrivals already this year, with Andalucia bearing the brunt. On the western Mediterranean route to Spain, 420 migrants have died this year while making the crossing.

Motorway casualties A MAN is in a critical state after being run over by a female driver last Sunday, on the Southbound lane of the TF-1 at Las Chafiras, at around 5pm.

Podemos bids to end violence, hands down SPAIN’S left-wing political party Podemos wants to ban all types of physical violence against children or teenagers, starting with the most-sociallyacceptable forms: smacking hands or bottoms, shaking, or similar “disciplinary contact”. The country’s third-largest political force wants the government to agree to the new law proposal in the next few months, because, otherwise, it might not be able to come into force until after the next general elections. According to the text of the motion, “any use of physical force, aimed at causing a certain level of pain, or at least discomfort, however mild” should be outlawed.

This would include “slapping, punching, smacking, kicking, shaking, scratching, pinching, biting, pulling hair or ears, hitting with a rod or other object, forcing children into uncomfortable positions, such as standing in a corner with their hands on their heads for a prolonged period, producing burns, etc”. Prior to 2005, parents or guardians had the right, by law, to use “reasonable and moderate” physical methods of discipline. But the socialist government, led by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, which was in power from March 2004 until November 2011, axed this from the Civil Code. Zapatero was following recommendations by the Council of Europe, which cited scientific evidence to show that smacking, and other forms of physical punishment, was harmful in the short and long-term to children.

Tel: 822 14 15 17 info@canarianweekly.com Publisher, Proprietor and Editor: MES ONCE SL Depósito Legal TF 1209/97 CIF: B- 38753802

The current text in the Civil Code says: “Correction should be conducted with full respect for the child’s physical and psychological integrity, and in accordance with his or her personality”, meaning that undue harshness should not be used with an overlysensitive child, or one of a nervous disposition. Courts have passed verdicts in this vein, finding parents guilty when corporal punishment was unnecessary, but not convicting them where it was minor and did not cause undue mental harm to the child, such as a tap on the back of the hand to stop him or her touching something. Podemos wants to extend this, citing research and views from a number of social organisations, specialising in child development, and interpreting the text in line with a “humanrights focus”. The party also highlights

the recommendation by many global charities that time should not start to count, in cases of sexual abuse, until the victim is aged 30, rather than 18, as is the case now. If the law goes ahead, it will include the setting-up of a 24-hour, freephone helpline, through which callers can speak to professionals who, in emergency cases, would have the jurisdiction to take immediate action. They would also have a register of “minimum interventions” to avoid duplication, and children being “victimised twice”, or having to undergo additional and unnecessary rounds of questioning and evidence-giving. Part of this procedure would involve recording calls and statements from children, so they do not have to keep remembering the same details, or repeat them in front of a judge.

An ambulance was dispatched immediately, as well as a doctor and nurse from the San Isidro medical centre, to assist with the emergency and take him to Hospiten Sur for treatment. The woman driver, who suffered head injuries, was also transferred there, swiftly, for treatment and observation. Guardia Civil officers were at the scene, taking statements from witnesses and regulating the traffic flow.

Youngster killed after bike crash

A YOUNG boy died, tragically, after being involved in an accident just after 7pm on Monday, when he was knocked off his bike by a car. He was out riding near his Fuerteventura home at Calle Sirinoque, close to Puerto del Rosario. An emergency call soon had an ambulance dispatched to the scene, and, upon initial observation from the medics, it was confirmed that the young boy had suffered severe bruising, as well as a heart attack. The ambulance crew began CPR immediately, but couldn’t revive the boy, confirming only his death.

SPAIN’S party leaders, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Podemos chief Pablo Iglesias, have completed a 22% wage increase to reinforce the former’s minority government, and avoid early elections. If it comes off, it will be the biggest earnings hike in Spain for 40 years, and will also be the cornerstone of the new partnership: the two parties agreeing on the 2019 budget, which would include a raft of other socially-oriented measures. But a responsible party, which wants to govern, cannot sign off on a minimum wage of over 20% when it has a 15% unemployment rate. That is why the budget has become a major hurdle for Sánchez, whose PSOE Socialist Party has just 84 law-makers in the 350seat Congress, while the Senate is controlled by the conservative Popular Party (PP). And even with Podemos support, it does not guarantee passage, because this will require additional backing by Catalan separatist parties, who are demanding to see steps in connection with the jailed secessionist leaders, and self-determination In addition, the increased spending, contemplated by the PSOE and Podemos, will require negotiations with Brussels, where officials have already expressed doubts about the measures. The deal between the Spanish socialists and the anti-austerity party seeks to underscore a shift to more progressive policies, from the centre-right approach taken by former PM Mariano Rajoy of the PP. Rajoy was removed from office in a historic, noconfidence vote that took place in late May, led by Sánchez and supported by Podemos and regional parties. Catalan premier Quim Torra insists that no support for the budget is forthcoming unless they see progress on self-determination, as well as the situation of jailed secessionist leaders. But, from a political point of view, the PSOE-Podemos agreement could also herald a wider collaboration between both parties, with a view to next year’s local and regional elections, and to the 2020 national election. “This agreement is a starting point for a new

Workers may receive extra 22% in wages

period in Spanish economic policy, which we think will result in a coalition government,” said Sánchez, in statements to national newspaper El Pais. The 22% rise in the minimum wage adds up to 900 euros a month, and the CEOE employers’ association has already talked about “the negative effects” of such a move on collective bargaining, wages and the economy in general.

Both leaders are also pledging to raise pensions, at a cost of over one billion euros. They will also invest over 1.3bn euros more in education and science, and spend more on unemployment and disability benefits (850m), on housing (over 600m) and on increased paternity leave (300m). “This agreement is a starting point for a new period in Spanish economic

policy, which, we think, will result in a coalition government,” said Sánchez. The sum total of all these additional expenses is in excess of five billion euros, and Brussels received the blueprint on Monday. But European Commission are already talking about “a package of social measures that are surely valid and necessary, but lack the means to finance them”. A high-ranking EU official

pointed out: “A responsible government, that wants to govern, cannot sign off on a minimum wage raise of more than 20% when it has a 15% unemployment rate and a low-skilled workforce in general; the measures affecting businesses do not seem to be going in the right direction.” Spain has almost unmatched unemployment, as well as Europe’s largest deficit, public debt of around 100% of GDP, and even higher private and external debt levels. No wonder, then, that Spain’s opposition parties say the maths simply don’t add up. But Finance Minister María Jesús Montero has said that increased revenues from tax hikes and higher economic growth will compensate for the additional spending. Meanwhile, on the political front, the 17 members of Congress, representing the Catalan separatist parties ERC and PdeCAT, have already refused to endorse the new budget plan unless they see progress in connection with their demands for selfdetermination. Their votes are critical, because the PP and Ciudadanos, which will vote against the plan, hold 166 seats together. The PSOE, Podemos, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), the Valencia party Compromís and two parties from the Canary Islands together represent 161 votes, requiring, at the very least, support from one Catalan party and an abstention from the other.

PM Sánchez jeered by military-parade crowd

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was booed during his first 12th October military parade, since he took office in June. When the convoy of official cars, in which the PSOE politician was travelling, made its way down central Madrid’s Castellana boulevard, thousands of people began to jeer and whistle at him. Crowds also chanted “Out, out!” and “Elections, elections!” at the country’s leader, who came to power with the PSOE Socialist Party, after filing a successful

no-confidence motion against Mariano Rajoy, of the Popular Party (PP). After stating, initially, that he would call Spaniards to the polls, Sánchez has since said he will see out the current legislature, which is set to end in 2020. The scenes were reminiscent of those suffered by former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, also of the PSOE party. Rodríguez Zapatero, who led the country from 2004 to 2011, was also subject to abuse from the crowds during the annual 12th October military parade, which is linked with Spain’s National Day celebrations. The gestures of rejection

aimed at Sánchez last Friday were in stark contrast to the warm reception received by King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and their daughters. Princess Leonor attended the parade for the first time, positioned to the right of her father, a gesture through which the Royal Household has made her situation as heir to the throne clear. In previous years, the Princess of Asturias had attended the event with her mother, the Queen, and her sister, the infanta Sofía, the three of them standing to the left of the king. Among those at last Friday’s parade were current PP leader, Pablo

Casado, and the head of the Ciudadanos party, Albert Rivera. All the regional premiers were also present, with the exception of those from Catalonia, the Basque Country, Navarre and the Balearic Islands, the latter because of Mallorca’s recent flash-flooding. The heads of Spain’s North African exclaves, Ceuta and Melilla, were also there. This year saw a total of 4,000 military members take part in the parade, as well as 88 aircraft and 152 vehicles. The Guardia Civil, National Police, Civil Protection and Coast Guard also took part.

Canary bananas may counter colon cancer RESEARCHERS at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid are carrying out a study into whether Canarian bananas can prevent colon cancer, because of the high content of their soluble-fibre pectin. The study, backed by the Association of Organisations of Canary Banana Producers (Asprocan), is looking into the possible, positive effects of Canarian-banana intake, as an aid to combat colon cancer. During a Madrid conference at the second Congress on Nutrition, Food and Dietetics, the study’s scientific director, Professor Antonio López, said the diet was a “fundamental factor” in preventing diseases such as cancer. “Hence the importance, in this case, of gaining scientific knowledge on the possible positive effects that banana intake may have,” he said. The main objective of this research is to understand the role fibre can play in the prevention of colon cancer. Fruit, and the banana, especially, is an important source of fibre, and bananas from the Canary Islands have a particularly

high content of a soluble fibre called pectin, when compared with those from other countries. In fact, the bananas grown in the Canary Islands contain almost twice as much pectin as those of other origins. And, according to Prof López: “This could, potentially, have beneficial effects on the human intestine, and, therefore, play an important role in the prevention of colon cancer.” In short, he added: “The goal of this scientific study is to find out whether any component of bananas is capable of reducing the growth of colon epithelial tumour cells, because of its capacity to act on the mitochondria.” And, after the first results obtained, he said: “The prospects are very promising.”

Timeshare victory for relieved couple A COUPLE from Southampton are celebrating one of the biggest, individual, timeshare victories of all, thanks to a Spanish law firm, against a Tenerife company. Max and Britt SewellRutter, from Southampton, won 365,000 euros against La Pinta Beach Club, after being forced to remortgage their home in England, as well as losing most of their life-savings because of dodgy contracts. The historic victory came after the judge ruled that the contracts should be deemed null and void, because of perpetuity. Under Spanish Timeshare Law, any weeks sold after 5th January 1999, cannot be in perpetuity, and not for more than 50 years. A relieved Max SewellRutter said: “We have had timeshare weeks with La Pinta for over 10 years, and every year we went there, we were approached by the resales department,

pressuring us to buy additional timeshares, which they promised to sell at a profit. “They put so much pressure on us each time, to make us part with our money, that we felt quite exhausted and gave in. “As a result, we lost most of our savings, and had to remortgage our house. We

also had to take out a bank loan, and, in the end, we had lost a considerable amount of money.” Sharon Johnson, of Malagabased M1 Legal ECC, who acted for the SewellRutters, told the Olive Press: “As far as we are aware, this is the largest timeshare victory ever achieved.”

Arrogant drug lord surrenders to cops

A BRAZEN drugs lord, who appeared in a music video with scantily-clad women, has handed himself in to National Police in the south of Spain. Officers detained Francisco Tejon, described as

Spain’s most-wanted drugtrafficker, at La Linea, in the province of Cadiz in Andalucia. He was accompanied by his lawyer. Tejon, on the run since 2016, recently appeared in a reggaeton music video, uploaded to YouTube by rap artist Clase A. The video shows Tejon and

the singer stepping out of a Bentley Continental before arriving at a house party, where they are surrounded by half-naked women and champagne bottles. It is not yet known when or where the video was produced, but it has now been removed from the YouTube website.

Heartless gang rob lady, 97 THE National Police have arrested six members of a criminal group, believed to have raided the home of a 97-year-old woman in Alcoy, Alicante. They were said to have stolen her life savings, as well as the gold jewellery she stored in a safe. And police estimate that the missing items were worth close to one million euros. Thankfully, the woman was not at home when they broke in, yet they locked her in the bathroom on her return, and took away her mobile phone. Local Police said the gang’s “clear objective” was to break open the safe using a blow-torch. They succeeded, stealing a large number of jewels, including sapphires, rubies and emeralds, as well as a big sum of cash. A comprehensive, fourmonth police investigation followed, culminating in the arrest of those involved: three men and three women, aged between 27 and 57, of Spanish, Ecuadorian and Colombian nationalities. Officers from the Specialised Crime Unit focused on three addresses, in the towns of Alcoy, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Alamo. Along with the arrests, the blow-torch was seized, as well as 6,000 euros in cash, 2,100 dollars, 100gm of cocaine and various mobile phones.

Tenerife port swelled to around 10,500 tourists. It certainly was a busy time for Santa Cruz port, and its staff, because, the day before Divina arrived, the Mein Schiff 1 turned up with 2,800 cruise passengers and 950 crew members, followed by the Celebrity Silhouette, with the same number of passengers and crew.

Councillors want to change the regulations, that provide for these establishments, so that they are at least 150 metres away from each other, and at least 300 metres away from schools. Last year, four National Police officers took their lives, and, so far this year, there have been two selfinflicted deaths of Guardia Civil agents. Action is now demanded to investigate factors that could have led to this increase in officer suicides, and to ensure that all police have access to mentalhealth support services.

People-traffickers poleaxed by police NATIONAL Police, in collaboration with Europol, have dismantled part of a criminal gang, dealing in peopletrafficking for sexual exploitation. Some 15 members have been detained: two from Gran Canaria, eight from

Mallorca capital Palma and five from Alicante. Those arrested had contact with other gang members in Libya and Nigeria, the latter being an obligatory route for people-trafficking, because many of the girls are picked up from the poor towns there. Five victims have recently been identified: two in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria and

three in Palma de Mallorca, who revealed that they were forced to pay a 35,000euro, so-called debt, as well as being subjected to voodoo rituals and constant threats about family members back in Africa, should they ever speak with police about their plight. The investigation began a year ago, and a specialised group of officers carried

out no fewer than 536 operations, in their bid to wipe out sexual exploitation. So far, the police have arrested 1,219 people, featuring Spaniards, Albanians, Chinese and Africans, who were all involved in the trafficking. And they have also released 290 victims, from Romania, Nigeria, China and Latin America.

Druggies have turned to migrant-smuggling Abusive Northern Ireland

man books ticket to prison

FOUR people have been arrested in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, for trafficking migrants to the mainland in speedboats, which are normally used in the drug trade. The Guardia Civil confirmed last month that narcos in the south of the country had moved into the “lucrative” business of migranttrafficking, because an increasing number of people attempt to reach Europe from Africa, via Spain. Police say that the four detainees led a gang in Ceuta who took migrants, specifically Algerians,

across the Mediterranean to the mainland. It has been reported that they charged between 1,8002,000 euros per person per trip, each earning a profit of around 26,000 euros per vessel. A source claims: “The profits of the organisation were such that those involved devoted themselves to this criminal field, rather than that related to drugs.” Data from the International Organisation for Migration states that more than 40,000 migrants have reached Spain by sea since the beginning of the year, with a further 398 perishing in the process. This is more than treble the arrivals who made it in the same period last year.

A MAN from County Down, Northern Ireland, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for threatening to kill, and “flailing his arms about”, terrifying a female member of Jet2’s cabin crew. The flight from Fuerteventure to Belfast also saw Kevin O’Hare punching the seat of an autistic boy, causing

the young passenger to “scream”. Reports suggest that 27-year-old O’Hare also acted in an aggressive manner towards police, when he was arrested at Belfast airport. O’Hare’s lawyer told Antrim Magistrates’ Court, in Northern Ireland, that his client had been drinking before boarding the Jet2 flight to Belfast International Airport. O’Hare was given a fivemonth sentence for making death threats

towards the cabin crew, and an additional five months for assaulting a member of Jet2’s team. The judge described O’Hare’s actions as “appalling”, and bemoaned that incidents such as this case were becoming “all too prevalent” on aircraft. The plane pest, understood to be battling a “long-standing difficulty with alcohol, going back over 10 years”, was alleged to have said he didn’t “recollect anything in relation to the incident”.

Guardia Civil officer killed in line of duty POLICE have arrested a man, believed to have shot dead a Guardia Civil officer in the early hours of last Monday, after he had stopped a car in Granada. The suspect was described by sources as “a known criminal with a long police record”. Another source claims that after getting out of the vehicle in Huetor Vega, one or several occupants opened fire, fatally wounding the 49-year-old. They were stopped, initially, on suspicion of being involved in a Las Gavias robbery. The officer, who leaves behind a wife and children, was taken to Granada’s Technology Park of Health Sciences Hospital, shortly before 5am, and was given emergency surgery. But he died shortly afterwards. A spokesperson for the

La Almudena Cathedral, which is no place for Franco’s burial

Local Police of Granada said: “We want to convey to the family, friends, companions and brothers, our deepest condolences after the death in service of our partner, Arcos. Rest in peace.”

Bombs play havoc in revenge attacks BOMBS, detonated in Marbella and Benahavis last week, were believed to be a revenge attack in the Costa del Sol’s escalating, druggang warfare. On the Wednesday, at 1am, a car bomb went off outside a villa at a gated community in Mirador de la Alqueria, Benahavis. Moments later, there was another explosive device, detonated in neighbouring San Pedro, outside a carwash on an industrial estate. The car-wash owner is the same man who lives in a villa where the burnt-out shell of a BMW, used in the attack, was found. Dramatic images at the scene of the industrialestates blast show doors ripped apart and windows shattered. No one was injured, fortunately, and no arrests have been made so far, though police believe the attacks are a case of “scoresettling” between gangs. The main target was believed to have snitched on perpetrators for the previous torching of a gym near to the car-wash, which had singled out drug-lord “Maradona”. A police spokesman said: “National Police

Franco body should be banned from cathedral THE Spanish Government is turning to the Vatican for help in preventing dictator Franco being buried at a famous Madrid cathedral, should his remains be exhumed. Last week, Franco’s family demanded his body be reburied at La Almudena

are investigating the circumstances surrounding an explosion at a warehouse on an industrial estate in San Pedro, in the municipality of Marbella. “The possibility of a gangland-style attack has not been ruled out. The possible links between this explosion and another at almost the same time, near a house belonging to the owner of the warehouse that was targeted, are being investigated.” The blasts come amid a spate of gang-related violence, which has plagued Spain’s Costa del Sol in recent times. In an Estepona shooting this month, a gypsy drugdealer wound up dead and fingerless in Algeciras, after being bundled into a car by a rival drug gang. Last month, in Cancelada, a British man opened fire on police before they gunned him down in broad daylight.

Cathedral, next to the Royal Palace. But the Government argues that it would undermine the object of exhumation from the Valley of the Fallen. There are also fears that the move would create a new pilgrimage site for the dictator’s supporters, posing a security risk. Government officials would prefer he was moved to a less-prestigious location, such as El Prado cemetery, in which his wife is buried. But ministers, with no legal grounds to prevent the landmark, cathedral move, are pinning their hopes on church leaders. It has been reported that Calvo also intends to

discuss properties, which, the government suspects, are owned, fraudulently, by the Catholic Church under laws approved by Franco. Carlos Oslo, Archbishop of Madrid, agreed not to prevent the exhumation back in July, but he has since claimed the church cannot stop Franco’s relatives from moving his body to La Almudena. It is understood that should the Government find a legal reason to stop the transfer, the church will support it, as it did with the exhumation. Right now, though, its only argument is the security risk it might pose, which could be rejected by the courts.

Jailed children left mum to perish ‘in a cruel way’ MADRID’S Supreme Court in Madrid has ordered an elderly woman’s two children to serve a 17-year prison sentence each, for leaving their mother to die “in a cruel way”. The defendants were condemned by the judge for their “absolute laziness” in caring for their 76-year-old sick mother, neglecting her “most basic needs” of food and hygiene. The convicted siblings appealed an original judgement from 2015 in

Santa Cruz. However, the judge at Spain’s Supreme Court refused to alter the offenders’ initial sentence. Prior to her 2015 death, the sick mother lived in Tenerife with her son, daughter-in-law and grand-daughter. The convicted son had agreed to share care responsibilities with his sister, because their mother suffered from osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, urinary incontinence and senile dementia, and had even tried to commit suicide twice. The judge told the court that the siblings had neglected this responsibility, saying: “They totally ignored her most-basic needs”.

The court also heard that the children had stopped feeding, cleaning and moving their mum’s position in bed, which resulted in her “foreseeable and avoidable death” on 26th August 2015. The main causes of her death added up to “chronic malnutrition, severe anaemia, infected ulcers and acute, purulent bronchopneumonia”. She weighed just 25 kilos at the time of her death. In Spain, the Civil Code ensures the obligation of children to care for their parents when they are unable to do so, and “when they have reached an age and cannot fend for themselves”.

Jetski record-breaker gets better of robbers

A JETSKI record-breaker called in the police after his latest attempt was almost ruined by thieves in southern Spain.

Marinus du Plessis was travelling from the Arctic to Athens to perform the longest-ever journey, 40 days, made on a jetski. But the 55-year-old South African was forced to lower his sights on the 11,000km Guinness-WorldRecord attempt, after thieves in Barbate, Cadiz, stripped down his jetski for parts, while it was docked overnight. “I’m so disappointed with what happened,” said Plessis, a food exporter. “Criminals took so many bits off it that it was half-sunk. “My security alarm went off at 3am, but, by the time I got to it, the equipment was all stolen. To make matters worse, they returned the next night to strip down the rest.” Plessis was making the epic journey on behalf of Gift of the Givers Foundation, a charity for disabled people in South Africa. But once he had replaced the stolen parts, he still beat the previous record by more than 4,000km.

He first broke a world record by jetskiing 17,500km, from Alaska to Panama, in under 95 days. And Plessis is adamant that he hasn’t let the unfortunate event put a downer on his experience. “Although I was very disappointed in what happened, I also had the most fantastic experience with the locals,” he said. “Most of them in Barbate were fabulous.” He added: “This mission was about more than breaking records. It was a matter of experience, and it has exceeded all expectations.” Police are analysing CCTV footage to try to identify the thieves.

Cruise ship’s Cruz return

THE Independence of the Seas cruise ship returned to Tenerife’s Santa Cruz port on Monday, soon after setting sail for La Palma. The ship left Tenerife’s capital at 6.30am, but had to perform a rapid about-turn because it was carrying

a sick passenger, in need of urgent medical attention. The emergency services, along with the Port police, were waiting to assist with the emergency, and, as soon as the passenger was in the safe hands of medics, the cruise ship continued its journey, heading for the Canary Islands’ other Santa Cruz, in La Palma.

Is your financial planning match-fit for today's world? By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

GOOD financial planning can help identify steps to protect and make the most of your income, assets and wealth. You will benefit most from looking at your savings, investments, other assets, tax planning, pensions and estate planning together. Protecting your wealth It is only natural that you will want to secure financial security for your family, no matter how long you live, or

what health issues may come your way. You may also want to help the next generations, by leaving a lasting legacy. However, today's economic and political climate presents many challenges to protecting and growing your capital. The prolonged period of ultra-low interest rates, for example, has made it harder to achieve decent returns on lower-risk investments, aggravated by creeping inflation. And Brexit uncertainty is likely to continue generating fluctuations, in the value of the pound and euro.

At times like this, careful planning plays a particularly-important role in securing your financial security over the long term, helping you weigh up which issues affect you most, and establish how you can protect against them. Personalised, expert advice While some choose a DIY approach, most people will benefit from an independent and expert review of their finances. After all, it is difficult to take a step back and look at your broad, financial situation from a trulyobjective perspective, or fully understand

the complex tax implications and changing rules. For the best results, take professional advice from an experienced financial adviser, based here in the Canary Isles. They should use the necessary tools to thoroughly understand your unique situation, needs and objectives, including how you want to shape your legacy. Investment planning While all investments, even bank accounts, carry risk, a suitablydiversified portfolio can help manage risk, within your comfort level. It is essential

to establish a clear and objective view of your risk tolerance, to determine the investment approach that will suit you. Your adviser is best placed to do this objectively through psychometric testing, for example, combined with their knowledge of your family's situation, and your financial goals. Understanding local taxation If you live here, all elements of your financial planning, from investments to estate planning, need to be set up for Spain, not for the UK. Ideally, your adviser should be based locally, and have first-hand experience of the issues facing expatriates in the Canary Isles, financial and otherwise. Crucially, they should also have in-depth understanding of cross-border tax planning, including the Spanish tax regime, and how it interacts with UK rules. A local adviser can react quickly and help you make adjustments if your personal circumstances change, or if there are Brexit developments or tax reforms that may affect you, including new opportunities. If you decide to return to the

UK, at any point, they can help you navigate the tax regimes and residency rules of both countries. The importance of regulation Make sure you only deal with an adviser who has suitable, professional qualifications and is authorised by a reputable, regulatory body, such as the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). They should also be authorised to give advice, here in Spain. Remember: if you are living in Spain, your finances should be set up for your life here, not for your old life in the UK. The sooner you review your financial planning and set up a strategic, longterm vision to protect your wealth, the sooner you can relax into a prosperous future in the Canary Isles. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Sun tax to be cut out

THE Government’s Council of Ministers has taken the first steps towards abolishing the country’s controversial ‘sun tax’, by approving a royal decree. This will introduce urgent measures to force Spain’s transition to a clean and accessible energy model, including the elimination of the socalled sun tax.

The decree’s main focus is to introduce a law, supporting selfconsumption across Spain, which means residents can create their own energy. The NGO Greenpeace group welcomes the changes, but it is urging the Government to take further action by producing a tax, which “forces the polluter to pay”.

From Sydney in Australia, Alex Jones and JJ Chalmers look ahead to the 2018 Invictus Games which get underway tomorrow. Since Prince Harry launched Invictus Games in 2014 the event has gone from strength to strength. This year, more than 500 injured, ill and wounded military personnel from 18 countries have gathered for the fourth edition of the Games. Members of the UK team share their inspiring stories of how the power of sport has transformed their lives.

“We live in one of the world’s most competitive consumer economies, yet many of our children aren’t prepared for it, and the playing field isn’t level. There’s a big divide between people who are in the know, and everyone else. Yet I’m aware I’m one of the lucky ones – my professional success is beyond anything I could’ve ever dreamt of. Managing that path between pushing for success and coping with failure hasn’t always been easy. There’s a lot I wish someone had told me in my teens.” - Martin Lewis In this new hour-long documentary special for ITV, Martin Lewis steps away from his live studio for a one-off programme in which he returns back to his childhood home in Cheshire, and reveals some of the life lessons he has learned which he hopes will help parents to help their own children. During the show, Martin reveals what he believes every family needs to teach their children to protect their futures, reflecting on his childhood and how it influenced his later career. In 2003, Martin set up MoneySavingExpert.com for £100, which rapidly became the UK’s biggest consumer site, and now according to the Sunday Times Rich List he is worth £125 million. In the programme Martin also explores what has driven him to become a campaigner for social equality and financial justice, founding the Money & Mental Health Policy Institute charity, and funding a financial education textbook which will be sent free to all state schools. He says: “I’m more nervous about this show than any I’ve ever done. If I’m honest I feel somewhat exposed – cameras have been following me where I’ve never let them before. “I’ve not just stuck to the core money saving lessons, I have taken a deep breath and looked at some of the lessons life has taught me. My aim in this documentary is to try to help all parents navigate through what they need to know to give their children the knowledge to survive, thrive and push for the best chance of success.”

Meanwhile Michael (John Goodman) in the UK, Alice Munezero (Noma Dumezwini) in Rwanda, and Eunice Clayton (Tamara Tunie) in the US, all believe the time has finally come to reveal the truth about a longburied crime - which will in turn expose Kate to a dark truth about her own past.

acey Emin: Where Do You Draw The Line?

r, BBC1, 22.45

This year has been an extraordinary year for British artist Tracey Emin. With large-scale commissions catapulting her from London’s St Pancras station to the streets of downtown Sydney - only pausing for breath with exhibitions in Hong Kong and Brussels along the way she has proven yet again that she packs a punch like no other. But as she turns 55 and enters what she likes to call the “last stage” of her life, is it time for a more mature, reflective Tracey? Following the death of her mother in 2016, she has decided to return to her home town of Margate and convert a derelict print works there into a new studio where she can live and create. imagine... has spent the past year following Tracey across the world in a bid to chart her creative process at work. Throughout the film, she tells Alan Yentob about her life to date, from her troubled early years in Margate to a series of breakthroughs in the 1990s as a leading light of the Young British Artists, featuring career-defining work like My Bed and her embroidered tent Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995. With contributors including Sir Nicholas Serota, Jay Jopling, Maria Balshaw and David Dawson, this is the definitive account of one of Britain’s most infamous artists.

Trevor McDonald and the Killer Nurse Wednesday 24th October, ITV1, 21.00

In Sir Trevor McDonald’s first year reading News at Ten, he covered the extraordinary case of one of Britain’s worst serial killers: a young, female nurse. In 1991, 22-year-old nurse Beverly Allitt murdered four children in her care, and attacked a further nine, at Grantham Hospital in Lincolnshire. Now, 25 years since he reported on her conviction, Trevor is able to shed new light on a case that has fascinated him ever since. Trevor is given access to the original police interviews with Beverly Allitt, and tracks down several of her surviving victims, some of whom are speaking for the first time about their traumatic experiences, and the impact it has had on their lives. Bradley Gibson was 5 years old when Allitt tried to kill him, in the children’s ward of Grantham Hospital. Now 32, Bradley tells Trevor how his heart stopped beating for thirtytwo minutes, long after many doctors would have given him up as dead. “They had to use adult doses of shock for me because I was not coming round at all.” When Trevor plays Bradley the police tapes of Allitt’s interview, he says, “She’s trying to get away with it any way she can. To me that screams out almost psychotic.” Kayley Asher was just fifteen months old when Beverly Allitt attacked her. She was already suffering from a serious disability affecting her development. Her adoptive mother Sharon tells Trevor that “Kayley was injected with air underneath her armpits that made her lungs collapse”. She says that Beverly Allitt is still a major presence in their lives: “Kayley has...flashbacks of what happened. She sort of looks under her bed, in drawers looking for Nurse Allitt although (she’s) told time and time again she’s not there, she still looks the whole time.” When Trevor asks Kayley what it is that frightens her now, Kayley replies, “in case she comes back for me.” Trevor also meets the detective that caught Beverly Allitt, and hears the extraordinary story of an investigation against the odds. Former Detective Superintendent Stuart Clifton tells Trevor how he pushed on with his enquiry, despite pressure to give up: “One very senior officer said to me, ‘you’re chasing rainbows’. Detectives develop a sixth sense, I think, and particularly experienced detectives, and there was something that just rankled with me that didn’t seem quite true.”

The Lakes With Paul Rose BBC2, 20.30

For the last 20 years the Lake District has been the place that adventurer and explorer Paul Rose calls home. He can see the central fells from his living room window and within a few minutes can walk to the shores of Windermere, England’s biggest lake. In the first episode of this new documentary series, Paul explores Windermere and joins the 18 million tourists who make the Lake District the most visited national park in the country. Paul takes the helm of one the Windermere cruise ships which carry one in ten of every visitor to area, and he takes a look at how Windermere first became a tourist destination for wealthy adventurers who wanted a different kind of wild experience in 18th century Britain. He also goes in hunt of things modern-day visitors may miss, including a hound trailing event that’s been a part of the Lake District calendar for more than 200 years. Plus, he meets one of the survivors of the Holocaust who came to the Lake District in 1945 as part of a mercy mission to help Jewish orphans from the Second Word War. Paul ends the programme with the ascent of Orrest Head, which offers a spectacular view of Windermere, and was the first hill climbed by Alfred Wainwright when he came to the Lakes in the 1930s.

The case of the ‘Brooklyn Ripper’ is big news across New York. In the eyes of the press Howard’s client is already a guilty man. But is this the open-and-shut case painted in the media? As junior attorney Jonathan explains, the prosecution’s evidence isn’t quite as conclusive as they would like. Perhaps more than at any point across the series, Howard finds himself fighting fire with fire - both inside the courtroom and in press conferences in a case that strikes to the heart of what it means to be a defence attorney in a big, controversial trial. Howard’s belief in his client’s innocence creates a wedge between those closest to him. In the office, Lena admits she struggles with the idea of Howard taking the case and Marie, Howard’s wife, admits she wishes Howard wouldn’t take these controversial ‘media’ trials. With Howard staying away from home to fight his big trial, Marie takes time to reflect on his background and reveals some insights into her husband’s past. The portrait she paints of Howard’s childhood is a world away from the successful financially secure life they share. But it is one that explains much about Howard and his eccentricities, particularly the roots of his fascination with collecting children’s toys.

Steve is chosen to play a key role in The Lantern Man Festival – an annual village tradition, the sinister origins of which are lost in the mists of time. As with most of these village traditions, it’s largely an excuse for drunken revelry. So it’s not the best time for Nicky’s daughter Zoe to come and stay with them, having just split up with her boyfriend in Leeds. When Zoe takes a shine to the local bad lad Bronson, Nicky and Steve have to do their best to stop a romance blossoming. As Steve is made to don a ceremonial cloak and drag a straw figure through the village, things are hotting up - but that’s nothing compared to the disastrous events which unfold at the fireworks display.

Flood hunt for missing boy, 5, ends in sorrow A HUGE search operation came to an end in Mallorca on Tuesday, after the authorities confirmed that they had found a body “that could correspond with that of the child”, who disappeared in the flash floods sweeping the island last week. Arthur Robinson, aged five, had been swept away

by the severe floods on 9th October. Rescuers, including many soldiers, searched several parts of the river Ses Plenes, which stretches between Sant Llorenç and Son Carrió, and Arthur’s body was discovered about 500 metres away from the last bridge in the Sant Llorenç town. A memorial service was held on Wednesday evening by the Bishop of Mallorca, Sebastià Taltavull, to pay tribute to the 13 people who lost their lives on the holiday island, after last week’s severe flash flooding.

The service took place in the Parish of Nostra Senyora dels Dolors, in his home-town Manacor, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain attended to pay their respects. Initially, searchers found Arthur’s backpack in Cala Morlanda, leading them to believe that he could have been dragged six kilometres downstream, towards the sea. Joan Pol, directing the search operation, confirmed that the backpack belonged to Arthur, and clarified that another one, found in Son Carrio days earlier,

was actually owned by his sister, Ursula, who was, miraculously, saved by a German cyclist. Tragically, though, their mother, Joana Literas, died in the worst floods to hit Mallorca for a century. Hundreds flocked to the 40-year-old’s funeral, in her hometown Manacor last Saturday. She was one of 12 people who perished on the

island last week, as a result of the violent storms and floods. And there was more disheartening news for Mallorca residents and tourists this week, because new severe weather warnings have been issued. The other Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera have also been warned about poor weather alerts.

Our high-equality rating SPAIN has been named fifth in the rankings of countries in which women feel equal, according to the University of Georgetown’s Institute for Women, Peace and Security. Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Slovenia and Spain were named the most female-friendly countries, in a report by the Institute. It follows the promise of Spanish politicians that there would be progress on gender equality this year, amid protests against sexism and gender violence. The university’s study accounted for cases of gender violence, the representation of women in parliament, as well as safety and legal systems. Spain ranked highly in almost all categories.

It came 11th in genderviolence rankings, the studying disclosing that 13% of Spanish women had, at one time, experienced some form of sexist attack. More than 80% of Spanish women surveyed said they felt secure, and the report’s authors said they had feelings of security, though not freedom.

Spain came 20th in terms of women involved in politics, and that female members of the Cortes Generales, the country’s Parliament, comprised 39% of the lawmakers’ total. And the country topped the ranking of equality in its legal system, with the fewest discriminatory laws on its books.

BRITS may not have the same access to their Netflix and Spotify accounts when travelling abroad, if there is a ‘no-deal’ Brexit. New information by Brexit secretary Dominic Raab reveals that EU laws, prohibiting firms from blocking access to websites, based on a customer’s nationality or place of residence, won’t apply if the UK cannot agree a Brexit deal with the EU. The EU’s digital, singlemarket rules, introduced this year, allow subscribers to access accounts such as Spotify, Netflix, Prime and Amazon Music anywhere in the EU, as they would in the UK. But this will not be the case if Britain leaves the union without a deal in place, although it won’t affect expats living in Spain, or Tenerife. Documents released by the UK Government reveal: “In a ‘no-deal’ scenario, the UK version of the GeoBlocking Regulation will cease to have effect in UK law.” In terms of Netflix, though content varies from country to country within the EU, it

provides the same content as your home country for a certain period. As for Spotify, you can use it in a different country from the one you are registered in for up to 14 days. You then have to upgrade to a premium account, or change your registered country, if you want to continue with the service. Raab, whose Brexit department has issued notices to try to help companies prepare themselves for a ‘no-deal’ result, said: “Securing a good deal with our EU partners remains our top priority. “But, if the EU doesn’t match the ambition and pragmatism we’ve showed, we have plans in place to avoid, mitigate or manage the risk of ‘no-deal’, and make a success of Brexit.” In addition to issues with subscription services, Brits have been warned that the Eurostar train might not run between Britain and other countries, such as France and the Netherlands. Holiday-makers who book deals with EU firms which go bust might not get their money back. And Brits purchasing faulty goods from EU companies might not be entitled to a refund, either.

Where great, hearty food is taken to another level! By Tara Scarlata LAGARTO Brasserie is a modern, familyfriendly restaurant in the heart of La Caleta, and serves good, hearty, familiar food that everyone can enjoy.

With a brand-new, exciting menu, and a new headchef, brought over from its sister restaurant, Char, we wanted to discover more about what the Brasserie experience has to offer. One of the first restaurants of its kind in Tenerife, Lagarto’s menu offers food that will definitely hit the spot, fill you up and wow you, all at the same time. There is also a lovely bar area which is great for cocktails. There is an extensive drinks-andsnacks menu, and it’s a perfect place to pop in to meet and relax with friends, or enjoy a few, pre-dinner drinks. When you arrive, you can instantly see the attention to detail. The distinctive, open-plan restaurant offers soft lighting, beautifulyet-comfortable furniture, views out to the Atlantic Ocean, and a relaxed, friendly vibe. I have visited Lagarto before, and was intrigued to see the new changes. A couple of friends joined me, who had not been before, so they had no idea what to

expect. After a busy day, we started with a few drinks. The Pink Collins, a refreshing, pink gin with strawberry, lemon and soda, really hit the spot, and Alison (visiting from the UK) was pleasantly surprised by the extensive gin list on offer. We found the menu really simple to follow. They have created a variety of dishes, using the finest and freshest ingredients, which were split into easy-to-read sections, including hotand-cold starters, meat, fish and seafood, vegan and sharing platters. You can select your own choice of sides and sauces, to tailor your meal exactly to suit your taste buds. To start with, we had a mixture of cold-and-warm starters. The Burrata Pistachio was first, and very tasty. It consisted of a whole, Burrata mozzarella, served with charred leeks, roasted corn and pineapple, topped with pistachio crumb, and accompanied by fresh pesto.

The cheese was fresh and full of flavour, with a soft, buttery texture, and it went very well with the leeks, corn and pesto. To finish it off, we had a serving of the Moroccan flatbread, which went really well with the rich cheese. Following this, we had one of my favourite dishes at Lagarto - the Tuna Tataki. It’s seared, fresh tuna served with strawberries, topped with a wasabiand-lime mayonnaise, and finished off with a ginger sorbet. They have elevated this dish since I last tried it, and I didn’t think it could get better. It is now served with an extra special touch. If you want to add a bit more smokiness to the dish, they use a hot coal to sear it at the table. You get a dish with a little bit of theatre, so check out the looks from the other diners, who are wondering what’s happening! Every element of this dish was prepared perfectly. Nothing overpowered, and

when you put all these elements together, they complement each other, perfectly. We then had scallops, which, after seeing a few pictures, I was looking forward to trying. They were perfectly cooked, and served with crunchy asparagus, a rich, flavourful, lobster bisque, and glistening, lime caviar, to give a hint of freshness. They definitely tasted as good as they looked. For the main course, we tried one of the vegan options - the roasted pumpkin risotto with tofu. It was rich and creamy, and packed full of flavour. I couldn’t quite believe I was eating a healthy, vegan dish … all the taste, without the sins! Then to my favourite dish of the night - the pork cheek. This is slow cooked in a redwine reduction, served with a shallot-and-onion puree and wild mushrooms. It is so tender that when you try to pick it up it falls off your fork, and it just melts in your mouth. There is such a rich, deep, homely feel about this dish. It’s proper comfort food, and tastes incredible, so, when you visit Lagarto Brasserie, this is a must. We also had the Txogitxu fillet steak, served rare. As a party of three, we all liked our steak cooked differently. But, by bringing a small grill to our table, enabling us to finish off our

steak exactly how we liked it, was a nice touch. The meat was excellent quality; tender and juicy, and served simply with sea salt and triple-cooked chips. To finish the meal we had the Lagarto, sharing, trio dessert, which is perfect for me because I can never decide which dessert I want! This includes a rich, decadent, creamy tiramisu, a creamy, pineapple-andcoconut mousse, and my favourite, the blueberry cheesecake. This had a crunchy base with cream cheese, and was topped with blueberries and forest fruit with a tangy sauce. I think all the sins saved from the risotto were used in the dessert, but it was definitely worth it! Sitting back and relaxing, with a few more gins and cocktails after our meal, we were able to really enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, and talented, live musician. There was also an extensive wine list, including a selection of local Canarian wines, and champagnes, if you were celebrating something special. We loved the new changes at Lagarto Brasserie. With the cleverly-created menu, fantastic Venture service, live music and delicious cocktails, Lagarto really does offer the perfect dining experience. We will be back! Avenida Las Gaviotas, La Caleta, Adeje, Tenerife.

Beautiful Bert needs a home! Gorda and Flaca WE are looking for a permanent foster home for Bert, in her twilight years. She just needs a warm place with good food, and she'll be happy. She's about 20 years old, but gets around well. She can become a bit confused as to when she's last had her dinner, and asks for more, even when she's not hungry! She had her teeth removed some years ago, because of sores in her mouth, but has been fine ever since. She also had an eye removed, many years ago, but the remaining eye is fine. She's not a cuddly cat, preferring to spend time on her own, although she is OK with other cats. Cats Welfare will be responsible for all her food, litter and medical needs. Please consider giving this old lady the life she deserves. Adoptions We have lots and lots of adorable kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, forever homes! As well as an abundance of kittens, we have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone's sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years.

All are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook. Alternatively, ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. Each cat or kitten is adopted with a week's trial in your home. Shop volunteers needed We need more volunteers to join our friendly team, in our shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). The sessions are 10am-2pm and 2-6pm, and two people are on a shift at all times. There are drinks available, and goodies in the fridge! If you have some free time and would like to help our cause, please send us a private message via Facebook (Cats Welfare Tenerife), or pop into the

shop. Los Silos black cats Cats Welfare, along with several other charities, has been involved with the rescue, and subsequent care, of approximately 55 cats. We have an ongoing appeal in place, so that we can continue helping them. Even the smallest amount will mean a lot. Please send donations to our PayPal account info@cats-welfaretenerife.com, or take cash donations, in an envelope marked “Los Silos cats”, to the Cats Welfare shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur. We’re open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We are also appealing for food to be dropped off at Don Perro vets in Las Chafiras, or our shop. Please mark the food “Los Silos cats”. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

GORDA and Flaca are two, beautiful, little sisters. They are small in size, and around five years old. Unfortunately, their previous owner was rather old and could no longer look after them, and, when she moved house, she just left them behind. Fortunately, they were rescued, and brought to us at K9. Now they find themselves looking for a new home. It is clear that these babies are used to having an owner, because they are very loving. They will not hesitate to jump on your lap for a cuddle! They are like peas in a pod, and, although there are two of them, they act like one. Ideally, we would like to home them together, because they have always been with each other, and it would be unfair to separate them. They both have calm natures, but love going for walks, and they would make great companions. If you would like to know more about them, please don't hesitate to contact us on 667 638 468, or come down to the refuge to meet them. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their

stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Lions Club

Lions Club Tenerife Isla Sur EARLIER this year, members of Lions Club Tenerife Isla Sur were being hosted by the Adeje Bomberos, at the fire station in Fañabe. It was a thank-you for financially supporting a senior member of the Bomberos, enabling him to attend a special, week-long, training seminar in France. This was to train a firefighter in locating and rescuing people trapped underground, in the event of a building collapse. We asked the Bomberos which piece of needed equipment was at the top of their wish list…they replied: “a drone”. Fire fighters all over the world now use commercialquality drones for assessing the extent of a fire in a building or forest. They are used to locate missing persons by mapping out a large section of land, then automatically traversing the area. If a car goes down a ravine, the drone can be used close up to see if there are people in the car or surrounding area. Likewise, with boats going on the rocks at sea, or people falling over cliffs, a drone can be used to assess the situation. A major part of this project for our club is to not only fund the equipment, but to train a number of “pilots”, to be able to maximize their use. They need to be trained by professionals, and pass examinations under the control of AENA the airport authorities. The handover of the drone took place last Thursday, and local dignitaries from

Adeje and Arona town halls were present to witness the inaugural flight of the

Lion Drone. The Adeje volunteers are the first firefighters in the south of

A two-legged sweetie! WE are searching for a very special person who could give this gorgeous, little female dog a home. We are unsure as to what has happened to her in the past, but she was collected by Protection Civil, and brought to our refuge. She is roughly five years old, and is the sweetest dog you could imagine, but, unfortunately, she only has two legs. She's in very good health and is toilet trained, but she just needs a loving, quiet home, and massive amounts of cuddles. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on

664 321 219, between 8am5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets,

towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Put your stamp on it! WHEN you decorate your home, whether it’s a permanent base or a holiday property, you want to put your personal stamp on it. This is the place where you can relax, and your personality can shine through, and you should be proud to show it off to the world! Making a house stylish and look “designer” doesn’t have to be expensive, and depends very much on the careful selection of items and their placement. Decorative tips can be the difference between a room looking bland, like a hotel room, and

adding the wow factor. In many ways, it’s the most interesting and fun part of the whole, interior-design business. If you are decorating a small apartment, it might be an idea to start with your colour palette. The best plan is to use a neutral colour for the major parts, so the floor, walls and large pieces of furniture, such as the sofa, stand out. Once that is done, you are ready to add your pop of colour and texture, and make the space come alive. Your personal preference and taste will dictate how far you want to go with this, as well as your budget, of course, and whether you go for bold splashes of colour, or something more muted and tasteful. In any case, colour isn’t the only issue to consider; texture is also very im-

portant. Let’s imagine you want to create a very tasteful, lounge scene. You could go for a beige sofa and cream walls as your neutrals, and then you are ready to start. You can add some cushions in different shades of browns and creams, and some lamps with a metallic sheen, and a big mirror over the sofa, with a metallic frame. You could add a darkerbrown rug, and an abstract picture that combines browns, creams and metallic splashes. The result would be tasteful, and look veryput-together or “designer”. If you rent out your property, this would make a good colour scheme. It’s tasteful, and the inclusion of metallics gives it a sheen and a luxurious look, without being too daring or outlandish.

On that same bland background, you could make a completely-different scheme just by changing your colour choices. For example, in the same setting of a beige sofa and cream walls, you could go for a brightly-coloured rug, perhaps in two different shades, and then pick those two colours out in picture frames, as well as lamps and cushions. The rule of thumb here is not to go too overboard with the pops of colour, or it all becomes overpowering, and looks as though you are trying too hard. If in doubt, add one piece at a time, and see what the effect is, before adding more! A third scenario against your beige background would be to paint one wall in a daring colour, or use a vivid wallpaper, and then, very sparingly,

use the same colour, or tones of that same colour in some of the decorative items. These are three completely-different looks, all from the one background. One word of caution - if your property is small, don’t use a different scheme for each room, because there won’t be any “flow” between the areas. Better to choose a colour palette and mix it up a bit in each room, keeping a common element, throughout. One example of this might be grey floors, a grey sofa in the lounge, and a silver bedspread in the bedroom, but use a different accent colour to liven up each room. The common element of grey in each room will give the property a cohesive feel. Use mirrors to their

best use, to reflect light around the property, especially in dark corners, and choose the frame to tone with your furniture, or, alternatively, to make a statement. Display items that are personal to you, such as photos, or a souvenir from your travels. One elegant and stylish piece can look amazing on a mantlepiece, for example, and don’t be tempted to overcrowd it with other items. Let it speak for itself. If you aren’t sure how to proceed, why not consider using an interior decorator. They’ll help you organise your space, showing off your style and taste, in the best possible way. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will come to your house to advise you.

lowering the markers of inflammation in our bodies. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, healthy fats - like those that come from olive oil and avocado - fish, nuts, and dark chocolate are recommended. Red wine is sometimes considered to be a component of an anti-inflammatory

diet, though it should be consumed in moderation. However, an antiinflammatory diet isn't just about what you eat, but what you don't eat. Foods high in salt, sugar and refined carbohydrates should be limited or avoided. When these kinds of foods are consumed in excess, they're linked to higher markers for inflammation, which are tied to almost every kind of chronic disease, and presents a greater risk for cancer and diabetes. Inflammation is a complicated process that even the most knowledgeable scientists don't completely understand. But there

is some research to support that eating recommended foods, like fruits, vegetables and healthy fats, can reduce the risk for chronic diseases that have an inflammatory component, such as cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer. At the supermarket Sticking with fresh options will always minimise the consumption of processed foods. Try to avoid frozen meals and pizzas, snacks and quick-cook items. Sugar, or even some red-meat options, can contribute to inflammation when eaten in excess, so even when you avoid processed foods, that

may not be enough to completely fit into an anti-inflammatory diet. Cost can sometimes be a problem. Many of the recommended foods on an anti-inflammatory diet are often more expensive than lesshealthy options. But there are strategies you can use to eat well, without emptying your bank account, including buying frozen fruits and vegetables, which are just as high in nutrients as fresh versions, and focusing on plant-based proteins like beans and lentils, and buying foods in bulk. The long-term benefits of switching to an antiinflammatory diet far outweigh the immediate costs. Big dietary shifts

can be challenging in ways many people don’t think about, but they can also be mentally and physically rewarding. After the body and mind have adapted, adjust your routine to make time to cook and prepare food, and find ways to make your grocery budget work for you. Certain foods can't be eaten with some medications, and those on particular blood thinners need to monitor their Vitamin K intake. This vitamin is high in many vegetables. Extreme dietary shifts can be intimidating for many people, so easing into these changes is the best approach for long-term success.

Inflammation is a killer By Val Sainsbury FOLLOWING a diet which is packed with foods that lower the markers of inflammation in our bodies, can lower our risk for an early death. If you're hoping to live a long and healthy life, you might want to embrace an antiinflammatory diet. This is one which includes foods like fruits and vegetables, and mostly steers clear of processed foods, associated with a lower risk of death at an early age. A research study looked at 68,273 Swedish men and women, between the ages of 45 and 83. They were followed for 16 years, and those who stuck with a mostly anti-inflammatory diet had an 18% lower risk of all-cause mortality, 13% lower risk of dying from cancer, and 20% lower risk of dying from heart disease. What is an antiinflammatory diet? The kind of diet that focuses on foods high in nutrients, especially antioxidants, has been been associated with

Better… but still not good enough

WITH both teams languishing in the bottom half of the table, this match was either going to be a six-goal thriller, or the boring 0-0 draw which transpired.

The Galicians came in search of their third win of the season, but faced a home team who had improved defensively, yet couldn’t finish. They actually had 20 shots at goal, but only one was on target! Tenerife, who had five players in defence, proved solid in that department, but they lacked punch against a Lugo team lacking ambition. It was all Tenerife in the first half, as they passed the ball with conviction and patience, only to lack the killer instinct. They had shots from Milla over the bar, a wide header by Jorge and a long shot by Montañés, saved by keeper Juan Carlos, easily. Lugo did not even scare

CD Tenerife 0 CD Lugo 0

Dani Hernández, in the home goal, and with Pita and Seoane in their midfield, it was impossible for them to play without order. Yet the pair hardly saw the ball, in a game featuring little rhythm, and marked by injuries, interruptions and changes.

Tenerife lost more with the departure of Montañés, than the visitors did when Herrera went off, although their manager, Javi Lopez, chose to give Sergio Gil a chance up front to mix things up. This led to a more open match, in which Lugo were able to threaten Dani’s

goal area. But Tenerife didn’t panic or lose control. In fact, the arrival of Joao on their left wing, and the departure of Carlos Ruiz, suited the locals, who were more incisive and effective in the second half. But they nearly threw it away in the 54th minute, when a misunderstanding

between Dani and Camille led to a good shot by Iriome, who missed, fortunately. A 76th-minute shot from Dongou in a good position, and a late chance for Lazo, was all the danger created by Lugo. Tenerife, on the other hand, continued to create chances, but couldn’t get past Lugo’s big Columbian keeper Juan Carlos. There were efforts from crosses, corners, and setpieces by various Tenerife players, but the final result was welcomed more by the away team, leaving coach Oltra’s men knowing they had squandered two valuable points. The result still leaves Tenerife 18th in the league, with just a win and five draws this season. But there are positives, at least, to be drawn from their play and approach-work. Their next game, at 14thplaced Zaragoza on Sunday, will be a big test… and they really need a win!

Football

England stunners leave poor Spain bewildered A YOUTHFUL England side stunned Spain in Sevilla on Sunday, scoring a shock win in the Nations League.

It was the first competitive home defeat for Spain in 15 years, and the youngest England side since 1959 were 3-0 up inside 40 minutes. They took the game to Spain with fast, counter-attacking football, at Sevilla’s Estadio Benito Villamarín. It is the first time Spain have lost on home soil to England in 15 years and 29 games, manager Gareth Southgate displaying a tactical masterclass with a

Spain 2 England 3

side whose average age was just 23. England’s fearless play echoed some of their Russian World Cup magic,

to the delight of the thousands of travelling England fans. Southgate has a crop of young talent to choose from,

and his team demonstrated that they were able to play with an attacking flair, not seen since England’s heady days of the 1990s. Raheem Stirling ended his international goal drought in the 16th minute, to break the deadlock. And 13 minutes later, Marcus Rashford doubled their advantage, striking the ball past Manchester United team-mate David De Gea in goal. England skipper Harry Kane, who set him up sweetly, was also instrumental in England’s third, his square pass in the six-yard box, following

a dinked Ross Barkley chip into the box, being swept in by Stirling before halftime. A startled Spain pulled themselves together in the second half, and reduced the arrears just before the hour mark, when Paco Alcacer’s deft header hit the net. But England held out for the rest of the match. A diving Sergio Ramos header, with the final touch of the game, earned Spain a last-gasp, consolation goal. It restored some pride for coach Luis Enrique and his team, but there was no doubting who triumphed.

Hatter out, but not down! GAFFERS and Suters 20:30 Crew were tied at the top of Division 1, after last week’s results. Gaffers had a straightforward 8-0 home win against Mad Hatters, thanks to Joe’s 180. But, despite the score, Rob’s guys and gals made the night memorable. Suters 20:30 Crew’s Steve recorded a maximum in their 7-1 home victory over Picasso’s, whose point came, courtesy of a bull finish by Chas. Ourplace Playboys, who hosted Legends, fought hard to record a 6-2 win, aided hugely by Del Boy’s120 and Pablo’s two-dart, 96 checkout. For the visitors, John notched another 180. For a change, the story of the night at Pas O Nadas ‘A’ was missed doubles, when they entertained The Pub. And with Sam and Joel hitting maximums for the visitors, Daddy Cool

struck his own 180, and rallied the boys to take the team game and a 4-4 draw. The Loch-In ‘A’ welcomed Sandys four players, and Dave’s 180, plus Paul’s bull finish, lifted the home side to a 6-2 win. But all credit to Paddy’s weakened team, who played well. It was again tight at the top of Division 2, as Emerald Lounge ‘B’ travelled around the corner to Waterfall, and, after victory in the trebles, came away with a 4-4 result. Trophy-hunting, The Loch-In Bullseyes visited Nauta Nomads, and got closer to the top with an excellent 6-2 win, which was confirmed after consultation with Lynn… when the brandy had worn off! The game at Clouseau’s looked to be easy, as they secured an 8-0 win against Scooters

Wenger insists he will soon be back at work FORMER Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who expects to be working again in the New Year, says he has fielded enquiries from all over the world.

Wenger, who left Arsenal in May after 22 years in charge, has no idea where he will be employed next, but he feels “rested and ready to work again”. The 68-year-old Frenchman, who coached Japanese club Nagoya Grampus Eight before joining Arsenal, told German newspaper Bild: “I believe I will start again on 1st January. I don’t yet know where. There are associations and national

teams… it could be also in Japan. “From my 22 years at Arsenal, I have big experience on different levels, and there are enquiries from all over the world.” Wenger won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cup Finals at Arsenal, but his final years at the north London club were more turbulent. He endured a barrage of criticism from fans and pundits in the latter part of his reign, for his tactical approach and perceived failings in the transfer market, as the London club went 14 seasons without lifting the Premier League trophy. Wenger also said Germany needed Arsenal play-maker

Mesut Ozil to come out of international retirement. He announced the end of his Germany career, shortly

after returning from the World Cup in Russia. He had been criticised widely for posing alongside

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan in a photograph last May, which also featured Germany teammate Ilkay Gundogan. Ozil, a member of the 2014 World Cup-winning team, said he had faced “racism and disrespect” because of his Turkish roots. But Wenger said: “I believe that Germany needs Ozil, and I hope that manager Joachim Loew can convince him to go back. “Ozil is a super footballer, and he was not the worst in the World Cup. I was disappointed that he left the German national team. “I love it when the players are as good as possible. But they lose a bit if they do not play at an international level.”
