Tugboat drugs would have sold for fortune
Cont. from Front
The vessel carrying the illegal drugs was reported to have departed from Turkey, under a Moldovan flag. It arrived on Tuesday at the Las Palmas Naval Base in Gran Canaria at 11am, escorted by the “Armada Rayo” Spanish vessel. Earlier, after boarding the tugboat, National Police officers made 10 arrests, comprising seven Turks, one Georgian, one Ukrainian and a Bulgarian. National Police Commissioner Santos Bernal announced that cocaine, weighing a total of almost 15,000 kilos, had been seized in 2018 on the high seas. And the tugboat was the seventh cocaine-laden vessel this year to be pounced PODEMOS, the country’s anti-austerity party, reignited the debate over legalising marijuana during its organised, congressional forum on cannabis regulation. It followed in the footsteps of Uruguay, nine states in the US, and, most recently, Canada, which legalised the drug last week. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has said on several occasions: “It’s absurd that you can buy tequila or gin from a supermarket, but marijuana is illegal.” Marijuana cannot be prescribed as medicine in Spain. But under the Podemos plan, farmers would be able to plant the crop if they had problems with their regular harvest. In order to “stop big businesses from creating monopolies and oligopolies, and promote a dynamic economy that leads to social wealth,” the proposal would also support private crops and farming cooperatives, along with smallto-medium-sized agricultural operations. The aim of the proposal is to change the current law on drugs. This defines the sale and cultivation of cannabis as illegal and restricts consumption and possession to private spaces. Under the Podemos plan, the state would be in charge of handing out licences to plant, harvest and sell the crop.
on by the force. As if that haul weren’t enough, though, an incredible six tonnes of cocaine, buried among a shipment of bananas from Columbia, were uncovered by plain-clothes police on the Costa del Sol’s Santa Teresa industrial estate, on Wednesday morning. The stash, believed to be Europe’s second-biggest ever, has a street value of 360 million euros. The eye-opening find followed a joint investigation between the organised crime unit Udyco, the National Police’s Special Response Group against Organised Crime (Greco), and also the Guardia Civil’s Central Operative Unit (UCO). As soon as the stash was found, scores of camouflaged police cars, together with swat vans carrying heavily-armed officers, stormed the scene
and cut off all surrounding streets. The cocaine was buried in a banana shipment from Colombia in an old warehouse unit, which had been divided into two area. One was used by a man as a warehouse, while the other, after several years of inactivity, had been rented out, just a week ago. That floor-space, used by the suspects, held a refrigerated truck, vans and a Chrysler Voyager minivan. Three people from an import company have also been arrested, and another two were cuffed in France. But that weight was topped last year, considerably, in the Cadiz province, by the 8,500 kilos of cocaine seized in Algeciras port, which also arrived in a shipment of bananas from Colombia. It was reckoned to be Europe’s largest cocaine stash of all.
Sexual predator said he was only a minor
A YOUNG woman was the victim of an attempted sexual assault at a Gran Canaria shopping centre, by a man claiming to be a minor. Her screams for help were heard by a shop assistant at around 4.30pm last Saturday, and four more shop assistants ran towards Monopol shopping centre’s public toilets. They arrived, saw the state she was in, and promptly restrained the young man until the National Police arrived. But he kept insisting he was a minor, with disabilities. Police detained the man, and then located his mother, who was on the terrace at one of the
Podemos leader keen to legalise marijuana drug The Spanish Medical Agency (AEMPS) is currently responsible for authorising cannabis products, but only for clients in countries where it is prescribed as medication, as in Canada, Colombia and Uruguay. Michael Collins, director of the Drug Policy Alliance’s Office of National Affairs, in Washington, DC, who was one of the guests at the Podemos-sponsored forum last Thursday, said: “The debate is not whether it will be legalised, but when and how. Spain could be a leader in Europe if it does.” The expert, who previously worked with former US
president Barack Obama, argues that marijuana should be legalised completely, and not in stages. “If you begin with the therapeutic market so that you can later legalise recreational use, the black market continues to grow. Also, this system does not stop police persecution on the street,” he said. But, says Podemos: “The legalisation must be implemented, mainly for medical use and research. Under Spanish law, cannabis can be consumed for therapeutic purposes, but the plant itself is not considered medicine and
cannot be smoked for medical purposes. Instead, only cannabis derivatives can be prescribed by a doctor.” Podemos believes that legalising marijuana will allow institutions to replace the black market, claiming the proposal will reduce drugtrafficking and encourage young people to access the drug legally. Its plan includes a “strong punitive policy for those who break the law”, as well as measures to withdraw products being sold to minors, or who fail to meet standards from the legal market. According to data from the National Plan on Drugs, 90% of young people say they have easy, or very easy, access to cannabis in Spain. Podemos has not yet outlined how much tax revenue is expected to be generated by legalising marijuana. But based on the outcomes in the US, Iglesias says, “a state production industry could
centre’s bars, the whole time. Centre officials were aware that this was the man’s second incident there. In June, he was accused of his first sexual assault in the shopping centre, after entering the ladies’ toilets, and, supposedly, sexually intimidating a young woman, who shouted for help. But when the centre’s security guards reached the woman, there was no male to seen. Yet he was identified and caught on the security cameras, running from the shopping centre. The management has now requested a restraining order against the man, to prevent further situations. generate enormous revenue, that would lead to the best public healthcare in the world.” Between 2016 and 2017, the state of Washington collected $315 million (373,522 euros) in taxes from the sector. And Colorado invested nearly $300m from these tax revenues in building schools. But Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has refused to enter the debate on legalising marijuana, because, he said, during his latest visit to Canada: “I’m focused on what I’m doing now. I have enough problems as it is!” Centre-right party Ciudadanos put forward a proposal to legalise marijuana for medical purposes, but the plan was blocked by both the PSOE and the Popular Party (PP). “Aiming to legalise marijuana without a legal framework, or a serene debate, is to enter a legal black hole, and to put the cart before the horse,” said sources from Ciudadanos. A year ago, the PP and PSOE supported the creation of a congressional sub-committee, where all parliamentary groups could discuss the future of cannabis in Spain. “It is like any other drug,” says PP senator Jesús Ramón Aguirre. “Don’t tell me about its therapeutic effects, because this substance is harmful to our health.”

Crisis for pupils if a teacher goes sick A TEACHER at a Cabo Blanco primary school, absent through illness soon after the start of September’s new term, has left 100 children without essential French classes. Unsurprisingly, their parents have made an official complaint about the crisis because their youngsters’ education is suffering. Yet Jonathan Fumero, General Director for Planning and Educational Promotion, says the situation regarding Cabo Blanco and other schools is mainly because of the way applications are processed. He also says that some 14,000 teacher applicants are submitted, annually, which means the shortage is not down to a lack of resources. Yet Cabo Blanco pupils, from the 4th, 5th and 6th year grades, have learned
no French so far this term, because there is no other teacher available to cover. Parents have stressed that they are concerned for their children’s future, especially as French is an obligatory subject on the curriculum. They have been supported by AMPA, the Alternative Masters Programme, and are requesting that an
Police weigh up the dopey drug-dealers
TWO men, drugdealing outside a Santa Cruz hotel, have been detained by the National Police. The pair, both 23, and resident in the island’s capital, were spotted when officers, on a routine patrol around the area, noticed a car parked badly in Calle Ortega. They grew suspicious and went over the check the vehicle. But as they approached, they
saw both men acting strangely. The officers checked their identification, and then began a search of the car. They soon discovered, hidden in the car, four wraps of cocaine, 105 grams of marijuana and five MDMA pills. As well as the drugs, the police also discovered a weighing machine, as well as several plastic wraps, for the sale of the drugs in smaller quantities. The men were arrested and are now awaiting a court date.
Education Department inspector visits the Aronabased school to be made aware of the situation, first-hand, and also that he/she collects a parents’ petition, containing a list of signatures. They want answers, and they also want to know how their children’s education can evolve, especially if they haven’t received their basic
schooling to begin with. And the parents have requested the Ministry of Education open its employment list of specialised-subject teachers throughout Spain. But their main proposal, obviously, is that a French teacher be taken on at Cabo Blanco primary school. They are hoping, anxiously, that no more teachers become ill because of what
appears to be a worrying shortage, especially when others, if asked, have to try to cover specialised subjects. Leading schools’ official, Mr Fumero, says he “trusts” that the Cabo Blanco school’s situation, which is magnified in many schools throughout Spain, will be resolved within a fortnight.
A healthy workshop to benefit residents ADEJE Council participated in a recent, regional workshop on health promotion, which was an initiative designed to help councils and cabildos work on an overall strategy for the region. It was part of the national health programme, and various councils presented their own preventative projects, which they are working on. The workshop also discussed how other international zones, such as Azores, Canarias, Cape Verde and Madeira, combine promotion and prevention with public health services efficiently, improving their residents’ health and quality of life. Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo told those in attendance: “Although Adeje has only
been part of this forum since 2017, we have been committed to promoting healthier lifestyles in our local population for a lot longer, as an effective strategy for disease prevention. “We work from an integrated perspective, and we’re presenting the projects we have undertaken to improve the health of our people.” Among the strategies in place is better co-ordination of health resources, locally, and inter-sectoral education in the community. Here, too, there are projects
helping to educate the younger population about healthy choices, and classes for pregnant women, in addition to workshops for older residents to help them maintain a level of independence, regardless of age. There was also a call for the rapid signing of a covenant between the Department of Health, the regional government and the councils, to implement a national health promotion plan, which would also tackle the need to reduce health-related waiting lists.

El Mojon on the way to installing MRI scanner
ARONA’S South Hospital, located in El Mojon, began installing its mighty MRI scanner last Saturday, with the transfer and placing of a huge magnet, weighing just over four ton. It certainly became the centre of attention, with its complicated installation, because workmen had to use a special crane to lift and move the enormous magnet, strategically, before placing it in its new home. The total cost of the scanner added up to 1,280,000 euros, which was co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund
(Feder) and the Ministry of Health. And it is scheduled to begin performing in the first few months of 2019. It will complement the portfolio of diagnostic tests, already being carried out at El Mojon Hospital. The equipment will enable doctors to diagnose a patient’s symptoms by viewing different parts of the body through images, obtained by using radio-frequency waves, as well as the magnetic fields, generated by the powerful magnet. The South Hospital is the sister hospital of Candelaria, in the north of Tenerife, and both are run by the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health.
Man who thieved from his aged grandmother GRAN Canaria’s Guardia Civil have arrested a 28-year-old Spaniard, charged with bank fraud, as well as stealing 11,300 euros from the bank account of his elderly grandmother. An investigation began last month, after a family member had reported to the police that someone had been extracting money from the old woman’s bank account. It had been taken from cash machines, bit by bit, during August and September, and there were several transfers made to a third party. The complainant told police of suspicions that the thief could be someone within the family circle, because the transactions were all done with a bank card, even though the family’s cards were accounted for at the time. Bank officials soon discovered that
most of the transfers were going to an address in Arrecife, Lanzarote. By coincidence, the elderly woman’s grandson had moved from Gran Canaria to that island, recently, to start a new relationship. With this information, Guardia officers began their investigation, and they ascertained that the majority of the money was used to pay for luxury hotels, as well as flights from Las Palmas to Lanzarote. The officers also confirmed that the person receiving the transfers was the grandson, whom they arrested last Thursday (18th Oct), at the family’s Gran Canaria home, in the Arguineguín municipality, where he was spending a few days. Once in custody, the grandson acknowledged his crime and began to collaborate with officers, confessing what he had spent the money on, and where the rest had gone. He is now in Guardia Civil custody, in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, awaiting a court appearance.

NEWS IN BRIEF Toddler, 16 months, dies
A BABY aged just 16 months died, tragically, last Wednesday at her family home in Madrid, when her neck became entangled with the cord of a blind. The incident occurred in the Barajas area, and the toddler was believed to have been trying to climb out of her cot, when the dreadful accident happened. Paramedics, who responded to an emergency call, reported that the child was in cardio-respiratory arrest. And, after attempting several resuscitation manoeuvres to save her life, they were unable to revive her. Psychologists in Madrid are taking care of youngster’s parents. National Police are conducting their mandatory investigation, to discover the exact circumstances of the little girl’s death.

Bullying father, who laid into son, aged 2
Body found floating in port
A MAN’S body was found floating in the Las Palmas port of Santa Catalina, Gran Canaria, on Tuesday morning. The Emergency Centre was told of the sighting, just after 9am, and a medical team, along with the coastguard, were sent to the scene. Although the man’s identity was not known, officers have confirmed that he died around the port area. The coastguard was able to retrieve the body and take it to the port side, where medics from the ambulance crew could only certify the man’s death. Guardia Civil officers took charge of the corpse until a judge arrived to certify the man’s death.
Woman crash-lands in car
A WOMAN aged 40 was injured, after losing control of her car and driving it off the road into a La Palma ravine in La Palma on Monday, just before 8.15am. The emergency fire services and an ambulance attended the scene. The operator was told that the vehicle, with its occupant inside, had crash-landed in the Galguitos Ravine, between San Andres and Sauces. Fire-fighters helped free the crash victim before the ambulance team could start with their assessment. But she was soon taken to a hospital for further treatment.
GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a man at Lanzarote airport on Saturday at about 8.30am, after a commotion in arrivals. The man, who had just come back from Seville with his partner and their two-yearold child, had been seen by other passengers in the plane, behaving atrociously to the woman throughout the flight. As if that were not bad
enough, he then turned on his young son, while they were awaiting their baggage. He continued the “discussion” with his partner, and then, suddenly, took his frustration out on the child, by punching him in the face and throwing him on the floor. Angry flight passengers tried to intervene, before the Guardia Civil stepped in, and, ironically, had to protect the offensive man, before arresting him after listening to reports from them.
The Guardia officer in charge has reported that the man, known as R.L.D, has been a Spanish citizen for 20 years. He is wellknown to officers, having had a restraining order served on him, after being charged twice before with domestic violence. His two-year-old son, who had suffered several blows to his face, was taken to an Arrecife hospital in Lanzarote. The bullying father was held in police custody for 72 hours, before being presented to a judge.
Tourism group is after a trade fair unification THE association of tourism boroughs (AMTC), held its general assembly in Gran Canaria at the start of the week. The key point discussed was the association’s presence at next year’s Spanish international tourism trade
fair Fitur, which takes place in January. Following a number of discussions, the association has decided to negotiate with the Canarian Government, regarding the option of a united presence at the next event. However, the suggested unification on a single stand will not mean the AMTC losing its individual identity
at Fitur, considered to be one of the most important tourism trade fairs in the international sector. What it will mean, suggests the association, is that agents working in the tourism industry can do so under a united banner. The meeting also spent some time looking at the issues of holiday lets.

Storms catching up with the Canaries! THE horrifying storms, which have been battering mainland Spain, and especially Mallorca, where 13 people lost their lives in recent weeks, finally reached Tenerife on Wednesday. The South was rocked by a thunderstorm in the evening, and all over the island, especially in the North, the rain teemed down, leaving some makeshift waterfalls, along with rivers racing through the Santa Cruz roads. There was even a green recycling bin floating along merrily, with drivers doing
Trekker’s volcanic shock
A WALKER was rescued by a helicopter crew after falling into a dormant volcano at Fuerteventura’s Calderon Hondo on Wednesday morning. The 27-year-old German holiday-maker lost his footing while out trekking in the volcanic area of Lajares. Unfortunately, he suffered leg injuries, and was immobilised inside the old summit of one of the several, nowdormant volcanos. A helicopter was dispatched to the area, and, once at the scene, was able to winch the injured 27-year-old aboard. He was then flown to an ambulance, whose crew were waiting to assess him before transporting him to a local hospital. Local police officers were also at the scene, to assist in the emergency.
their best to avoid striking it while navigating their way through one particular street. The skies were full of dark, forbidding clouds, here in the South, as we went to Press yesterday (Thursday), and, meanwhile, the Canarian Government has declared weather alerts for the majority of the islands across the archipelago. The head of the Canarian Government’s Emergency Department said in a statement that Lanzarote and Fuerteventura were expecting heavy rain, and strong winds.
The alert was in place at 10pm on Wednesday, and the heavy rain finally arrived a little later, causing some damage to various parts of the islands. It hit Santa Cruz hard and left some damage, particularly to several sets of traffic lights, throughout the capital city. Yet the emergency services had far greater concerns, because four people were trapped in a small ravine, in a village called Valleseco. The volume of rubble, together with fast-flowing water, left them stuck and in need of help from the fire brigade, who obliged. The rain continued to pour down in Santa Cruz, provoking several incidents in Tenerife’s capital throughout Wednesday night, and continuing through to the morning. The Canarian Emergency services have all been landed with extra duties because of the trafficlight failures, and people have been asked to drive with caution around the capital, as well as the rest of the island, because the heavy rains are expected to be prevalent until the weekend, at least!

Thug starts row, and then batters two men
A MAN, familiar with law-breaking, has been arrested and accused of causing grievous bodily harm to two other men.
The National Police were called out to a bar fight in Triana, Las Palmas, after one man had lost four teeth and the other had a broken nose. The caller said a fight had broken out and that help was needed, because he couldn’t work out the men’s physical condition, because there was so much blood at the scene. On arrival, police discovered that the men were bleeding heavily from their faces, and that they appeared to have suffered trauma to their noses and mouth. The cops then called for an ambulance to take them to a nearby hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, as they interviewed witnesses, they were told that both men were provoked by a third person, who instigated the brawl. Witnesses said he punched and kicked both men persistently, causing awful injuries, before making a rapid departure. The police searched the area and soon found the 34-yearold man, who was detained and charged with GBH.
Swimmer’s shaky escape
Avocado thieves miss out on sale TWO men have been arrested, with 225kg of avocados, stuffed into sacks in the back of their car, near to a Tacoronte farm, from where they were believed to have stolen the fruit. When police questioned them about what they had intended to do with the fruit, they told officers they would have sold them on a
Santa Cruz street market. The street value of the avocados added up to 1,300 euros, and, when questioned by police, the farm owner confirmed that the fruit had been stolen, and added that significant damage had been caused to the perimeter fence. Both men are pending charges.
Restaurant hit by blaze in morning FIRE-FIGHTERS were called out to a fire at an Icod de los Vinos restaurant on Wednesday, just before 11am. It was, apparently, an accidental blaze which started in the kitchen. But the fire-fighters got to work, extinguishing the flames and then ventilating the building. The fire caused quite a lot of damage, specifically to the chimney, the oven, and the electrical installations, as well as to the kitchen itself. And the rest of the restaurant also suffered significant smoke
damage. Local Police and the Guardia Civil were at the scene to assist with the emergency. And, fortunately, there were no casualties at the restaurant, on the Centinela path.
A SWIMMER, who appeared to be drunk at Bajamar’s natural pools in La Laguna, was rescued by lifeguards last weekend.
They are obviously familiar with the pools, which are free to the public, but they had to dive in and drag the man from the water on to solid ground, before resuscitating him. He was transferred to Candelaria Hospital, where he received further treatment.
Blameless crash driver was trapped in his car
A DRIVER was seriously injured last Sunday afternoon after losing control of his car, while attempting to overtake another vehicle in La Laguna’s Parde Anchieta tunnel on the TF5. The other motor was, apparently, occupying both lanes, but, fortunately, the accident was witnessed by other drivers. They told police that the 24-year-old’s car skidded across both lanes as he attempted to swerve past the rogue vehicle. The fire-fighters, as well as an ambulance, were dispatched immediately, and, on arrival, they helped medics free the trapped victim from his car, so they could assist him further. Once the victim was released, he was stabilised before being taken to hospital for further treatment.

Good indication of poor driving! MORE than half of Spain’s drivers do not use their indicators when overtaking, and twothirds of those fail to do so when they return to the inside lane. That’s the grim verdict of the motorways’ safety centre, and a minority of drivers here in the South of Tenerife will surely relate to that. The rest never indicate whether or not they do! Research by toll firm Abertis says 53.1% of motorists overtake on dual carriageways without telling the driver behind what they are about to do. And 67.1% do not use their indicators when they have completed the manoeuvre and pull back into the right-hand lane. And according to the study, commissioned by the centre in Granollers (Barcelona province), the number of drivers who fail to use their indicators in each scenario has risen by 13.5% and 17.4% respectively, in the last year. Cristina Zamorano, chairwoman of the motorways safety centre, warns that failure to use indicators when overtaking, turning, entering or leaving a junction or lane puts other roadusers in danger. And she stresses that the offence attracts a 200-euro fine. She says the survey has revealed other driving data, which may reflect some honesty, rather than motoring standards, but are still a concern: 38.1%
of those who admit to driving “slightly” over the speed limit, include 18% of coach-drivers and 36.3% of transport workers. According to statistics held by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), speeding is a major contributor to 26% of accidents, involving serious injury or death. Just 3.4% admit to using a mobile phone while driving, but this means that every 20 minutes, someone on the road is on his or her phone, even though distractions at the wheel are the primary cause of serious injury and fatalities in crashes.

Toll firm Abertis says the findings are based on technical data, including measuring speeds, distances between cars, use of lanes and direct observation, and not just self-report, which means the results are objective enough to paint an accurate picture. The study was carried out on the AP-7 motorway, between Salou (Tarragona province) and Puçol (Valencia province), using a sample of 58,000 cars and vans, and 11,200 lorries and buses, which Zamorano describes as a “consistent
and major segment”. The research, therefore, applies to drivers in the provinces of Tarragona, Castellón and Valencia only, and in the regions of Catalunya and Valencia, as well as along one section of highway bordering the Mediterranean. So, it is unlikely to be a clear indication of motoring habits in Spain as a whole. But Lourdes Roquet, manager for motorways in Spain, says the same study is carried out in several countries, and, at the end of each year, they are all compared with each other.
Three killer dogs cost an owner 2,160 euros
A COURT in Spain has ordered a dog-owner to pay 2,160 euros in compensation, after his three dogs attacked another one in the street and killed it. Sevilla’s Court of First Instance ruled that the dogs responsible for the attack were “loose and without muzzle” in Gerena, Sevilla. The 9th October case heard of the claim filed by the family of the deceased Pomeranian. The family claimed that on the night of 16th December, 2016, the father of the family walked his dog down Calle Mirlo and into the Gerena area of Sevilla. At this point, “three large dogs” attacked his dog, “biting and pulling hard”. And the family claimed that, despite emergency veterinary attention, their dog died of injuries sustained in the attack. The family requested that the owner of the three dogs compensate them 1,500 euros for “moral damages”, for the emotional toll the attack took on the family, after having raised the Pomeranian for four years. They also requested 660 euros for property damage. The court ruled that because the offending dogs were “loose and without muzzle” there was “no doubt about the responsibility of the defendant”, adding: “We are before an almost objective guilt assumption.”

12m-euro BLUEFIN-TUNA gangs… and all illegal
EUROPOL coordinated an international operation with authorities from France, Italy, Malta, Spain and Portugal, to arrest 79 individuals for their alleged involvement in Europe’s bluefintuna market…and they succeeded!
Operation Tarantelo was launched when the Guardia Civil noted irregularities involving bluefin-tuna fishing in the Mediterranean. Further investigations revealed that quantities of the fish were being traded, illegally, in Spain. Bluefin-tuna shipments were being smuggled into Spain through the French harbours, after catches in Italian and Maltese waters. Documents, from legal fishing and authorised farms, were used to import
the fish, illegally, into Spain, where insufficient inspections failed to detect the bluefin. Unauthorised catches were also found in Spanish waters, with smugglers transporting the fish in false bottoms, under the vessels’ decks. And several food-poisoning cases have been attributed to the unsanitary conditions in which the fish are stored, when in the hands of the smugglers heading for Spain. It is estimated that those smuggling bluefin tuna would earn around five euros of profit per kilogram. In total, the 2018 profits added up to more than 12 million euros, because, it is believed, the illegal market has been smuggling 2.5m kilograms a year. The Guardia Civil made their 79 arrests after carrying out 25 searches, with officers seizing more than 80,000kg of illegal bluefin tuna, alongside halfa-million euros in cash, and seven luxury vehicles.
Gunmen arrested after police probe A COURT has remanded a man in custody, and bailed another, in connection with a shooting in the Mijas area of Malaga, which left one person seriously injured last July. Guardia Civil officers arrested the suspects as
part of Operation Mostaza 2018, the investigation launched after the gunfire in Las Lagunas. One suspect was from Fuengirola, while the other one was arrested in Mijas. The probe followed a shooting incident, which took place on Calle San Dionisio, at around 7.55pm on 4th July. The emergency services received several alerts from witnesses, who had heard
several gunshots at the scene. One wounded man who fled, with the help of a passenger in his car, was taken to Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital, where surgeons operated on four gunshot wounds. The injuries were said to be serious, and the man was admitted to the hospital’s intensive-care unit. The case continues.

Miracle rescue of a missing paraglider A SPANISH paraglider, missing since last Friday, for four days, in a remote North Indian mountain range, has been found alive. José Luis Bernal García, from Asturias, had travelled with five friends to the State of Himachal Pradesh, and was last seen jumping from a mountain in the village of Bir Billing. Sandeep Kumar, Sub-
commissioner for the Kangra district, confirmed that rescuers had, miraculously, found José Luis alive, against all odds. The Spaniard, said to be a “great” mountaineering and para-gliding enthusiast, had “sufficient means to survive” when he disappeared, but his friends worried that time was running out. Rescue operations do not start in most of India until a person has been missing for 24 hours. That meant a
day had already been lost, but, by Sunday, a private helicopter was drafted in as back-up. An international paragliding championship, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday) in Bir Billing, is expected to attract around 200 competitors from all over the world. And José Luis and his friends had gone to train there, ahead of the event. But it is not clear whether he will be well enough to take part.

Sorry Mum, I’m too cultured to move off
YOUNG Spanish people tend to leave home at 29, compared with the EU average of 26, because of “cultural reasons”. Sociologists attributed these latest Eurostat figures to unemployment among the young, and precarious jobs when they do find work. Limited, official help when buying a starter property also helps to keep Spaniards in the parental home, they pointed out. Among the 19 countries belonging to the Eurozone, Spain ranked sixth-frombottom when it came to flying the nest, ahead of Italy and Slovakia, as well as Croatia and Malta, plus the republics of the former Yugoslavia. In 2017, the average wage for the 16-29 age group was just over 11,000 euros, while those between 30-34 took home an average 15,000 euros, according to the
Youth Council of Spain. On these salaries, buying a property, for under29s, swallows 60% of their earnings and 40% for the 3034 age group, which is well above the 30% average for tolerable indebtedness. In 1997, 12.5% of Spain’s population lived in rented accommodation, compared with 16% in 2016. And when the young do leave home, they are more likely to rent, often sharing rather than saddling themselves with a mortgage. During a recent property forum at Madrid’s IESE Business School, the four main speakers agreed that they did not foresee a realestate boom, although the sector was “healthy, stabilised and would continue growing until 2022”. But, they warned, it was important to pay attention to the young, because their continued difficulty in getting a foot on the property ladder also contributed to the fall in demand.
Women’s height to join Forces trimmed down MINIMUM heights for women aspiring to join the Armed Forces, including the Guardia Civil, have been brought into line with those of men to avoid discrimination, which, in the past, excluded 45% of females in Spain, automatically. A European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling, a year ago, required all member States to set a minimum height, which would be valid for each sex. However, with women being shorter than men, on average, it meant that more
females were being denied entry to the Forces than men. But Spain has now levelled that out. Until now, both men and women were required to be 1.6 metres (5ft 3ins) or above, to join the Forces. But Spanish men are, on average, 1.77 metres (5ft 9½ins), while the women, who average 1.63 metres (5ft 4ins), were more likely to be turned away. Now, though, the minimum height for women to join the Forces in Spain is 1.55metres (5ft 1in), which will enable many more of those of below-average height, to realise their dream career. But height is not everything, and, Spain’s Defence Commission MP Félix Alonso insisted: “We need a
lot of brain and not so much brawn.” Another rule affecting women trying to join the Forces has been relaxed, because, although tattoos are still forbidden, this is only the case when they are visible, when wearing trousers in a uniform. Visible tattoos have always been banned, which meant that a woman with one on her thigh was prevented from joining, because it showed when she wore a skirt. Yet the men were safe, because those with one in the same place on their body would be covered anyway. Now, the “not-visible-introusers” rule applies to both, even for tattoos that show when female officers are in skirts.
Gift Tax in the Canaries By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
THE Inheritance and Gift Tax Law acknowledges different groups of relatives to attribute a certain level of exemption or benefit for the payment of such tax.
Donations The inheritors belonging to Groups I and II (spouse, parents and children) enjoy a bonus of 99.9% of the tax quota, derived from the acquisitions “inter vivos”, as long as the donation is recorded in a public document. This will not be necessary when dealing with insurance policies, which must be paid as a donation. Also, in favour of the spouse and descendants, there is a 95% reduction of the net value of the items purchased, subject to a series of requirements, or relating to elements of a business or professional activity, developed by the donor.
In addition, a 50% reduction of the net value of the elements acquired may be applied to people who, though unrelated, meet certain requirements. Donations of shares of a company and cash Another 95% reduction is established for the acquisition of shares in companies, in the case of donations, in favour of the spouse, descendants or adopted, of shares in companies without quotation in organised markets, subject to a series of requirements. In addition, there’s a reduction for a cash donation in acquiring or rehabilitating the family home. Thus, the taxable sum, corresponding
to the cash donation made by an ascendant in favour of his/her descendants, or adopted persons under 35, at the time of granting the Public Deed, with a limit of 24,040 euros, will be reduced by 85%, subject to conditions. If the donor proves a degree of disability, he can enjoy benefits in the application of this tax. A reduction is also established for the donation of cash sums, destined to the constitution or acquisition of an individual company or a professional business, or to acquire shares in entities. The tax quota corresponding to the cash donation, made by an ascendant in favour of his/her descendants, or
adopted under 40 years at the time of granting the Public Deed, with a 100,000euro limit, will be reduced by 85%, as long as a series of requirements are met. As you can see, the Canaries is one of the Autonomous Communities in which it is most advantageous to receive an inheritance or a donation. Even with the improvements introduced by the rest of the Autonomous Communities, few manage to offer the same conditions. Spain’s world best beaches
SPAIN has been honoured with this year’s World’s Best Beaches award, having been given 696 Blue Flags, which was more than any other country. The findings were revealed last week by the Association of Environmental Education (ADEAC), the Spanish section of the Federation of Environment Education (FEE). The competition was conceived in 1987, and Spain has dominated it ever since, collecting more “quality beaches” than Portugal, Greece, France and Turkey. Factors taken into consideration by judges include beach safety, water quality, environmental information and management. The top three regions were Valencia, which received 132 flags, Galicia with 109, and Catalonia, which was awarded 101 flags. Despite being 186 miles away from the nearest coast, Madrid was given its first flag for the Virgen de la Nueve, which is located on the Banks of San Juan reservoir, close to the town of San Martin de Valdeiglesi.
Long-life factor spreading here! SPAIN should overtake Japan as the country with the longest life expectancy, by 2040, according to a study in the Lancet journal. With a predicted lifespan of 85.8 years, Spain will rise from fourth place to edge out Japan, which will average a fraction of a year fewer. Interestingly, the US States will drop from 43rd position
in the world (79.8 years) to 64th, while China will rise from 68th to 39th (81.9 years). The UK should to rise three places up the league table, from 23rd, with life expectancy increasing from 80.8 years in 2016 to 83.3 years in 2040. Researchers based their study on five “drivers” of average lifespans, which are all related to so-called “lifestyle” diseases, including high blood pressure, alcohol intake, tobacco use, being overweight, and high blood sugar.
They also incorporated information about rates of cancer, diabetes, and HIV/ AIDS. The World Economic Forum’s “Global Competitiveness Report” listed Spain as one of the healthiest countries recently, and it also ranks highly in its healthcare system. With the exception of Afghanistan, the bottom 30 countries in 2040, with projected lifespans of between 57-69 years, are either in sub-Saharan Africa, or on small island states in the Pacific.

A medication breakthrough for hamstrung nursing staff NURSES have been permitted to prescribe medication in Spain “under clinical guidelines”, set out by their individual, regional-health authorities. Until now, only doctors and odontologists were allowed to prescribe medication, with nurses administering drugs under the instructions of one of these specialists. A restricted law, introduced in 2015, upset nurses, who felt they were being treated as second-class health professionals. They felt hindered, to the detriment of patients, although they admitted that the terms of the new legislation did offer them greater protection, and better comfort for patients. In 2015, a number of nurses explained how far the new
law enabled them to act in terms of medication: they would be permitted to give a paracetamol for a headache, but not, for example, morphine. Until then, a patient in A&E, suffering pain, would not be able to get any relief, unless a doctor were available to authorise it. And night nurses weren’t allowed to provide any painkillers, not already agreed by a
doctor. That meant the patient might have to suffer until the doctor’s rounds during the late morning, because only on-call medics tended to emergencies. Giving an aspirin to a patient with a headache, when there was no doctor available to prescribe it, could mean a nurse being fired and struck off for “practising without a
licence”, which is actually a criminal offence that could even lead to a suspended custodial sentence. It is not entirely clear how far the recently-passed law will allow nurses to prescribe medication, and administer drugs, which would, previously, have required a doctor’s prescription. But nurses admit that, in reality, the legislation reform is mostly in place to give them legal protection for actions they already perform. “In their daily work, nurses have to make decisions and prescribe vaccinations, antibiotics and other medication without waiting for higher authorisation at every step,” one nurse clarified. “This created a legal loophole, which put nurses at risk. Now, we won’t be doing anything we weren’t already doing, but we’ll
be protected by law when doing so.” Another nurse, José Ramón, said: “Do you really think that, if you’re in a hospital bed at 3am, you can call a doctor to sign an authorisation for you to be given a painkiller? “Well, according to legislation currently in place, that’s how it should be. Doctors do not only prescribe medication. They actually decide how and when to give it to you. “As a general rule, when you call for pain relief at that time of the night, the nursing staff will oblige. The new law means they’re legally protected for taking that decision.” Nurses across Spain had been urging the new socialist government to approve the medication law reform in time for the ‘flu-jab season, which starts next month.
Spain may not veto the last Brexit deal SPAIN has hinted that it will not veto any final Brexit deal, following negotiations between Madrid and London over Gibraltar, last weekend. In fact, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been accused of “wasting” the country’s powers, to veto the UK’s exit from the EU. Gibraltar, a British overseas territory, has long been a bone of contention, with Spain contesting the sovereignty of The Rock, repeatedly. It achieved a major victory
in March 2017, by getting the negotiating guidelines of the European Council to express the need for a London-Madrid bilateral agreement, for the 27 members to approve and move forward with the UK’s exit from the Union. The EU gave Spain powers to block the Brexit withdrawal agreement. But, in a major breakthrough, Spain has dropped a key demand over Gibraltar, and suggested Madrid will not veto a final Brexit deal. Madrid has long complained about the Rock’s status as a British territory, and attacked it over its tax rules and environmental issues, as well as claiming
tobacco smugglers use the territory to move cigarettes into Spain. Following a meeting last Thursday, however, Sanchez said the UK and Spain had agreed an official “protocol”, meaning it would withdraw its advances to reclaim the country now, adding an extra layer to Britain’s favoured terms of exiting the EU.
Sánchez, in Brussels after an EU summit on Thursday night, said: “The Gibraltar protocol is resolved, and it has been closed with the British Government.” In the brief meeting between Mrs May and the Spanish Premier, both leaders wished to reach an agreement on the aspects still pending, in the negotiation on future
relations between Spain and the British colony. Following the Brussels’ talks, Sanchez said the topic of Gibraltar was limited “by State policy”, which required that he followed the path marked by the previous Government. Sanchez also said he aimed to keep the same Gibraltarian policies as the previous PP government. Crucially, Madrid also dropped its demand for joint management of Gibraltar’s airport after Brexit. The Spanish Prime Minister explained that he had “picked up the baton from the previous administration”, and added: “We have not changed anything.”

Supreme Court sparks mortgage issues about tax
THE Spanish Supreme Court is to reconsider who pays mortgage tax, less than 24 hours after news emerged of its decision to make banks, and not clients, pay the tax. A tribunal said it will review its decision because of its “enormous economic and social repercussions”. In an unusual move, Luis María Díez-Picazo, head of the court’s administrative division, which, this week, ruled against the lenders and in favour of borrowers, has put all appeals on this issue on hold, thereby preventing the new caselaw from taking effect. Banking-sector sources expressed “astonishment at the unjustifiable situation created by the Supreme Court”. And, over the coming weeks, the 31 judges who make up the division will meet to decide whether banks now really do have to pay the Impuesto sobre Actos Jurídicos Documentados (AJD), a tax paid by the home-buyer at the time of purchase, when a notary, officially, documents both the sale and the loan. In a decision made by a panel of six judges, one of whom entered a dissenting opinion, the Supreme Court determined that the bank is the only party with an interest in getting the loan certified by a notary, because this is what allows the lender to initiate foreclosure proceedings, if the borrower defaults on payments. Because the lender is awarded this privilege, through the public document, the lender should pay the fee, said the judges. This ruling, in itself, constituted a reversal of an earlier February
decision, confirming that clients were responsible for paying this tax. But in a short statement issued last Friday, the Supreme Court described the most recent ruling as “a radical shift in the criteria sustained to date” by this very same court, and it mentioned “its enormous economic and social repercussions.” Bankingsector sources have expressed “astonishment at the unjustifiable situation created by the Supreme Court”. Several major lenders said that, in the meantime, they would start paying the AJD fee immediately. “We are awaiting a definitive decision by the Supreme Court that will clear everything up,” they said. “We hope it happens as soon as possible. When all this is over, we’ll see who has to pay this fee.” Asufin, an association working for the rights of bank clients, estimates that if Spain’s eight million mortgagees were to demand the fee back, the litigation could represent 24 billion euros, on the basis of an average AJD fee of 3,000 euros per loan. The Supreme Court had not made it clear whether clients should claim the refund from the bank, or from their regional tax agency, which could, in turn, claim it from the lender. As a result of the decision, Bankia, CaixaBank, Bankinter, Sabadell, BBVA and Sabadell tumbled in the Spanish stock market last Thursday. The sector is already dealing with the fall-out from a previous legal decision on abusive “floor clauses”. However, shares began bouncing back last Friday, just seconds after the Supreme Court announced that it would review its latest decision.

Brexit uncertainty leaves GBP/USD on the defensive By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
THE past couple of weeks have seen Brexit uncertainties dominate currency markets, prompting considerable volatility in the pound, along the way.
This has seen GBP/ EUR slump from a high of 1.14 euros to 1.13, over the last two weeks. EUR/GBP has climbed from £0.87 to £0.88. At the same
time, a firmer US dollar has resulted in GBP/USD falling from $1.31 to $1.30, and EUR/USD holding at a low of $1.15. In terms of GBP movement, nearly everything has been driven by Brexit sentiment, with the UK’s failure to secure a deal with the EU, prompting significant volatility in the pound. The euro has also had a difficult time in recent weeks, with some positive data being overshadowed by an escalating row between Italy and the rest of the EU, as Rome looks to flout EU rules by seeking to
run a 2.4% deficit, in its 2019 budget. Meanwhile, the uncertainty surrounding both the pound
and euro proved to be a major boon for the US dollar, with rising safe-haven demand, coupled with a
hawkish outlook from the Federal Reserve, helping to propel USD exchange rates higher. Brexit is likely to remain the most pressing concern for GBP investors, over the next couple of weeks, with further weakness in sterling expected, unless some positive progress towards a deal is made. Also of note will be the Bank of England’s latest rate decision, at the start of November, with markets hoping the recent bump in wage growth will lead to a more hawkish outlook from the bank.
At the same time, the upcoming Eurozone PMI figures could place some more downward pressure on the euro, over the coming weeks, as economists forecast they will highlight the bloc’s continued slowdown. Finally, the US dollar may run out of steam over the next couple of weeks, with the release of the latest US GDP figures expected to confirm that the second quarter’s surge in growth failed to carry over to the third quarter. Floods claim life of a brave fire-fighter
A FIRE engine which overturned, during more flash floods in southern Spain, led to the death of a brave fire-fighter, just a week after 13 people, including a British couple, perished in Mallorca.
He went missing during rescue operations on a flooded road overnight, according to emergency services in the southern region of Andalusia. Two other firefighters travelling with him were rescued, but, tragically, he was swept away. His body was found last Sunday morning, hours after a search began, some four miles from where he tumbled into the rushing water. The water, which engulfed homes and streets, overwhelmed bridges in the southern province of Malaga.

Friday 26th October, BBC2, 21.00 In this episode our four craft-makers experience Sheffield’s rapid transformation from a rural market town to an industrial powerhouse known as Steel City, famous throughout the world for making high-quality cutlery. Sheffield cutler Corin Mellor leads our four makers back in time. Starting in the 18th Century, the time travellers arrive at Abbeydale Works, once the largest water-powered site along the River Sheaf. They are immediately set to work and are tasked with hand forging a scythe. It’s a farming implement that has found recent fame when used by a shirtless Poldark, but it was also one of Sheffield’s biggest exports. As a blacksmith, it’s familiar territory for maker Katie - but it’s the first time she has ever made such a primitive tool. Katie and Charlton work together in the forge to get the fire going using huge bellows. Katie usually has an electric fan in her modern forge, and bellows prove to be a lot more physically taxing. Then the two of them repetitively hit the heated steel with hammers, turning it into a curved blade. After an hour they are dripping with sweat. But there’s a disaster when the scythe cracks. The duo have to rapidly re-start the scythe and work under even greater pressure to get it finished before sundown! Outside the forge, Claire and Jason work with temperatures hotter than lava to create ‘crucible steel’ - a process discovered in Sheffield and transformed the industry. They then jump on a traditional wet grinding wheel to have a go at grinding a sharp edge on a scythe blade. It’s extremely dangerous work: Claire and Jason have huge admiration for the Sheffield grinders, learning that many of them died early from lung diseases. The makers have a go at cutting the grass with their scythe with a newfound respect for the skill and craftmanship involved in making this farming tool. Next, our makers head to the 19th Century - boom time for the cutlery industry. Presenter Steph McGovern (pictured) learns that the extravagant Victorians had a different piece of cutlery for every type of food! The makers step into the heart of a Victorian production line to make silver-plated cutlery, stamped with the fashionable King’s Pattern. This time they can use industrial machinery which vastly speeds up the process - no more hand forging! Katie and Claire meet with two ‘buffer girls’ who used to sand the cutlery on giant buffing machines - a job that continued into the 20th Century. The ladies tell stories about their nights on the town in Sheffield and the mischief they got up to in the ‘buffing shops’. The makers prepare the cutlery they’ve made for electroplating, a form of ‘blinging’ up their cutlery by covering it in silver. The makers need to use cyanide for this chemical process - Claire proceeds with caution working with such a toxic substance! But the biggest transformations were yet to come. Travelling forward to the start of the 20th Century, the makers discover how at Portland Works the invention of stainless steel brought cutlery to the masses and they experience the rapid transformation of Sheffield into a war machine, making WWII Commando Knives using a heavy-duty drop stamp. They finish their journey back in the 21st Century, where Corin Mellor takes our makers to his stateof-the-art factory - David Mellor Design. Here, they make high-end stainless steel forks from one of their bestselling ranges. With the City’s focus on quality rather than quantity, the makers learn that Sheffield’s historic cutlery industry is still thriving.

week’s TV Choice Black Hollywood: “They’ve Gotta Have Us” Saturday 27 October, BBC2, 21.00
The episode starts with Samuel L. Jackson’s radio interview on Hot 97 in which he criticises the casting of Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out and David Oyelowo’s role as Dr Martin Luther King in Selma. It’s a contentious, divisive and emotive subject, covered eloquently by the likes of Kasi Lemmons, Brian White, David Oyelowo, and Delroy Lindo. However, Jackson’s criticism fuels a much wider debate around whether black British talent should be taking roles and opportunities that could otherwise go to African American actors. UK black artists argue they had little choice but to join the exodus of home-grown talent to the United States and for many the move has borne fruit. This new wave of British talent have become stars, and are at the forefront of a Hollywood revolution. As well as looking at colour-blind casting, competition, and the creative and business opportunities opening up for black artists in Hollywood, this episode takes us through the pioneering work of director Julie Dash and that of contemporary female directors such as Destiny Ekaragha, revealing the inside story of what it is like to be black, female and a film director. The programme gives a first-hand account of the rise of John Boyega, who is seen by many as having the potential to reach the heady acting heights of Hollywood greats Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington.

Dark Heart ITV1, 21.00
DI Will Wagstaffe is at London City Airport when his travel plans are put on hold. His colleague, DC Josie Chancellor calls to inform him of a gruesome murder Staffe, along with Josie, DS Dave Pulford and DS Rick Johnson, are confronted by a horrific scene. RAY COLLINS, a man in his earlyforties, has been brutally murdered. As the team investigate further, they learn that the victim was arrested two and a half years ago on suspicion of sexually assaulting his young step daughters, Holly and Jasmine. He was remanded in custody for three weeks but there wasn’t sufficient evidence and Collins was released. Returning home that evening, Staffe discovers his sister Juliette and nephew Harry at his house. Juliette and Harry are Staffe’s world, he picks up on something that really bothers him and he knows their unscheduled stay means she’s in more trouble with new boyfriend Paolo than she’s letting on. As the story unfolds, Staffe and his team delve deeper into the morally complex crime. But pressure builds as it’s not long before a lawyer, Guy Dawlish is brutally attacked. Dawlish’s assault bears the same hallmarks of Ray Collins’ murder, but the similarity doesn’t end there, he was arrested two years ago over allegations of child sex abuse. There was insufficient evidence so he also wasn’t charged. But just as a pattern begins to emerge, a historical case throws Staffe’s theory of a single serial killer on its head. The suspected paedophile in this instance was John Statham. Like Collins and Dawlish he was attacked with unusual brutality. However this case appears to be closed. The father of the child Statham allegedly abused, Nico Cashell, is serving time for assaulting Statham and is adamant of his own guilt. With the anniversary of Staffe’s parents murder drawing closer, knowledge of the fact that their killer is still at large weighs heavy on his mind. Little does he know that elsewhere in London, Mark Regis, walks free of child abuse charges on a technicality. Is the depraved killer preparing for their next victim?
at Foretold Grenfell
, BBC2, 21.00
This 60-minute documentary is the dramatic, haunting story of five fires that foretold the Grenfell disaster, told through the eyes of those directly involved. This vivid and moving film for BBC Two collates the memories of survivors, the bereaved, fire-fighters, safety experts, and the politicians linked to five intensely fierce fire disasters that preceded Grenfell. This telling collection of interviews and archive footage shows the clear warnings that existed and could have predicted a Grenfell-type inferno happening in Britain. The programme focuses on three factors: the application of flammable material and cladding to buildings, the ‘Stay Put’ advice given by fire services, the absence of sprinklers - and how they contributed to each of the previous five blazes, sometimes with fatal consequences. Made over the course of 12 months, the film tells the story of the legislative history of building regulations from 1973 to the present day through five fires. It explores the causes, subsequent investigations and the recommendations that were sent to successive UK governments, ultimately posing the question - if lessons had been learned as a result of tragic repetition of errors over the decades, could Grenfell have been avoided? The five fires revisited include: Summerland disaster, Douglas, Isle of Man (1973); Knowsley Heights fire, Liverpool (1991); Garnock Court fire, Irvine, N Ayrshire (1999); Harrow Court fire, Stevenage, Herts (2005); and Lakanal House, London (2009).

The Lakes With Paul Rose BBC2, 20.30
www.canarianweekly.com 26th October - 1st November 2018
This week, adventurer and presenter Paul Rose explores Derwentwater/Borrowdale. The Lake District is a landscape shaped by water, and in this programme Paul gets to feel its power first hand. He heads for Seathwaite to meet the people who live in the wettest place in England. Paul also gets a thorough soaking as flooding hits the Borrowdale valley. This part of the Lakes is no stranger to heavy duty weather - flood damage from Storm Desmond in 2015 is still being repaired. In-between the downpours, Paul joins the crew of a Viking longboat for the Derwentwater Regatta. Back on dry land, Paul heads out on the trail to follow in the footsteps of Millican Dalton, the self-styled Professor of Adventure, who spent his summers living in a cave on Castle Cragg. He also meets members of Keswick Mountain rescue team on his ascent of Great Gable, one of the Lakes’ most majestic peaks.

Rugby League: England v New Zealand BBC1, 14.00
TV Guide
International Rugby League returns to the BBC as England begin a mouth-watering three-match series against New Zealand. The KCOM Stadium in Hull is the venue for this first Test match, with Wayne Bennett’s England aiming to improve on their fine form which saw them reach last year’s world cup final. The Kiwis, under new coach Michael Maguire, will be looking to rebuild their fortunes as they were surprisingly beaten in the quarter finals of the World Cup by Fiji. England will start this quality-looking series as favourites, having beaten New Zealand in June 36-18 in Denver, Colorado. Conditions today will be very different to that match, but with a strong, talented squad - including James Graham, John Bateman, Sam Tomkins, Mark Percival and star winger Jermaine McGillvary, England will be confident of victory.

Weekender Boat Party ITV2, 21.15
09:15 .......................Jeremy Vine
As the Nautical Weekender sets sail once again, David is determined to bring a bit of romance to the guests - launching his Love Boat – but it’s not long before it hits its own relationship rocks. With the arrival of a Prince Harry lookalike, Jack from Cardiff, and Cleo from Nottingham, it seems that’s David’s plans are truly on course. However, it all goes wrong on night two when Jack is caught chatting to two other girls and all the girls lay into him for disregarding his princess. Meanwhile, in the spirit of the love boat, David decides to take Jackson under his wing and help him with the details of wooing a girl – with a little help from his alter ego Sheila. The love boat’s resident rep romance between Jordan and Charlotte is still going strong, but yet again Charlotte struggles with the drinking ban, and when Jordan convinces her to have a drink on a night out, the two lovers soon drag in the rest of the team in a doomed cover up from el Jefe. Poor Imogen finds the conspiracy too much and breaks down – leaving David wondering just how he should handle his mutinous seamen.

Up-and-under bridge of size! THE world’s longest sea-crossing bridge, connecting Hong Kong and Macau to south-east China, opened this week, nine years from when construction began. The astonishing, muchanticipated crossing includes a snaking, road bridge and an underwater tunnel, linking Hong Kong’s Lantau island to the southern mainland Chinese city of Zhuhai, as well as the gambling enclave of Macau, across the waters of the Pearl River Estuary. The bridge spans 34 miles, and is about 14 miles longer than the width of the English Channel, from Dover to Calais. As well as the structure boasting the world’s lengthiest sea crossing, it is also the sixth-longest bridge on earth. Officials, who anticipate the
bridge being in use for 120 years, believe it will boost businesses by cutting travel time by 60%. More importantly, it is a key component in China’s plan for a Greater Bay Area, covering 21,800 square miles, across 11 South China cities. It comprises a 14.2-mile
overseas bridge and a 4.2mile undersea tunnel, connected by two artificial islands. A total of 420,000 tons of steel was used in the project, which, it is believed, is equivalent to 60 times the steel used to build the Eiffel Tower. Frank Chan, Hong Kong’s
Transport Secretary, said travelling time between Zhuhai and Hong Kong International Airport would be shortened, from four hours to about 45 minutes. He added: “It is envisaged that the collaboration between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, in terms of trade, finance,
logistics and tourism, will be strengthened.” But the enormous project has had its fair share of controversy. Construction work was dogged by delays, budget over-runs and corruption prosecutions, along with the deaths of construction workers. Seven have died and 129 have been injured since work began, most of them involving accidents in which they slipped or fell from a high point. The project’s total price tag, which includes artificial islands, linked roads and new border-crossing facilities, is unclear. But some estimates run to over £14 billion, leading critics to label it a costly white elephant. Bridge supporters promote it as an engineering marvel, while others see it as a costly, political project, designed to further integrate Hong Kong into the mainland, at a time when Beijing is tightening its grip on the semi-autonomous city.
Gove stirs it up with surge against plastic MICHAEL GOVE, the UK Government’s Environment Secretary, has launched a consultation on the Government’s plan to ban plastic items. Straws, stirrers and cotton buds could be banished in a year, because, he said, they can devastate the world’s oceans and wildlife. The ban could be put in place between October next year and October 2020, according to the Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs. The consultation will consider exemptions, to ensure that people who need plastics to deal with medical conditions or accessibility issues are not affected. Under Government plans, pharmacies could still sell plastic straws, and restaurants, pubs and bars could stock the items to be used, on request. It is estimated that 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316
million plastic stirrers and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds are used each year in England. Mr Gove said the ban would be a boost to help turn the tide on plastic pollution, adding: “Our precious oceans, and the wildlife within, need urgent protection from the devastation that throwaway plastic items can cause. “In England, we are taking world-leading action with our ban on microbeads. And, thanks to the public’s support, we have taken over 15 billion plastic bags out of circulation, with our 5p charge. “I commend retailers, bars and restaurants that have already committed to removing plastic straws and stirrers. But we recognise that we need to do more. “Today, we step up our efforts to turn the tide on plastic pollution, and ensure we leave our environment in a better state than we inherited it.” Around 10% of cotton buds are flushed down toilets, often ending up in waterways and oceans,
says the Government. And it is hoped that millions of pounds could be saved, annually, on clean-up efforts of used plastics, which can take years to break down. Sam Chetan Welsh, Greenpeace UK’s political adviser, commended ministers for doing “the sensible thing”, but he urged big companies to do more, by cutting down on plastic packaging. “Our society’s addiction to throwaway plastic
is fuelling a global, environmental crisis that must be tackled,” he said. “Ministers are doing the sensible thing by looking to ban single-use, plastic items, that can be easily replaced with better alternatives, or that we can simply do without. But this should be just the start. “If we are to protect our oceans from the scourge of plastic, the flow of waste needs to be cut off at the tap.”
He added: “That means the companies producing and selling all this packaging must take responsibility for it, and cut down the amount of plastic ending up in our shopping baskets.” Kate Nicholls, CEO of UKHospitality, welcomed the consultation, saying that many restaurants and hotels were already acting to cut down on plastics. “We wholeheartedly welcome this consultation on an issue of vital importance, and one which UK Hospitality has already taken significant action,” she said. “Since our ‘Unpack the Future of Hospitality’ summit in the spring, thousands of pubs, clubs, restaurants and hotels across the UK have changed their straws and stirrers to biodegradables, or adopted policies that cut or eliminate their use in their venues. “The Government is seeking views on how we can cut plastic waste, and we look forward to continued engagement to play a part in achieving that goal.”

Police are hunting for town’s poppy thieves A TOWN’S vandals, who ripped down decorative poppies from a memorial display, have been warned by police: “You will not go unpunished!”
The community in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, were appalled when 20 large poppies were removed from their War Memorial. And organisers of the town’s Poppy Appeal believe it was a pre-meditated act, to damage the display. In a tweet on Monday, Councillor Liam Dealtry, a former mayor, said: “To the person or persons who have stolen 20 big poppies off the Bridlington War Memorial fencing in the last four or five hours, I hope that karma comes and kicks you in the rear.” Inspector Rob Cocker added: “This
act of vandalism shows a complete lack of respect for those who fought and died for our freedom. “I want to reassure the residents of Bridlington that it will not go unpunished, and we are working hard to gather evidence, to trace those responsible.”
Schoolboy, 17, cooks the books… in a microwave! A SCHOOL in Lincolnshire has banned bags for health and safety reasons, which has merely inspired some pupils to get creative with how they carry their books, especially 17-year-old A-level student Jacob Ford. He disagreed with Spalding Grammar School’s policy after sixthformers were ordered not to carry bags between classes. The school said “injury was being caused to younger students” because of “ever-larger bags” being carried on their shoulders. Instead, they are being encouraged to carry books by hand between lessons. But that didn’t faze Jacob, who carried his books in a microwave, to prove a point. Previously, bags were not allowed in years 7-11, but, until this year, they were allowed for sixthformers. Jacob, however, staged a silent protest by using a wicker-basket and a microwave after a petition began. He also wrote a 3,000-word essay, in which he said a compromise could be made. He ended up being suspended for two days, after refusing to hand over his mobile phone, which he used to keep his mother, Tracy, updated about his “treatment”. She said: ‘I think Jacob’s protest has been very peaceful, and I believe he should have his say.” She added: “At the end of the day, I
believe in freedom of speech, so I’m very proud of him for standing up for something he believes in, microwave or no microwave.” Days after the rule was enforced, a petition began online. Hannah Catterall, who started it, said: “By not permitting back-packs, students are unable to carry revision materials to and from school with ease, and, therefore, grades may dramatically decrease.” The petition was removed days later after receiving 463 signatures. Bridget Allan, who has two children at the school, said: “I was outraged when I heard about the ban. I think it is ridiculous. “How can you even get to places on time with all the right books, let alone take things like sanitary towels? The school doesn’t allow children to carry bags and that was extended to the sixth form after the summer holidays. “This is something all of the girls and female teachers are talking about.” Clair Thacker added: “My son attends this school and I was completely unaware of this absurd rule, bearing in mind that most sixth-formers either walk to and from school, or use public transport. “Surely the staff would rather the students have everything they need with them on a daily basis?” The school’s website outlines a uniform policy for sixth-form male and female students, but does not mention bags at all. Head teacher Steven Wilkinson told Spalding Today: “The facts that have been presented are far from the full picture. “We have a student who has behaved in an increasingly-inappropriate way, actions the likes of which I have never witnessed, and who has been sanctioned, entirely in line with the school’s policies. “What disappoints me most is the fact that, rather than working with us, the parent concerned has encouraged, and is now seeking to glorify, her son’s behaviour.”

Endless treats at Wok Chinatown By Paul Waller
NESTLED on the top floor of Chinatown, Las Chafiras, is this fabulous restaurant. With two dining areas, inside or outside, undercover, there is lots of space for a family gathering, or seating for an intimate meal for two
There are plenty of staff to attend to you, speaking English and Spanish, which suited all members of our group. This restaurant was not what we expected, after having eaten in most other “eat-as-much-as-you-want Chinese restaurants, here on the island. This one is different, because there is no buffet to choose from. Instead, there is a menu with over 100, traditional dishes available, including a great selection
of sushi. You order what you fancy, and it is freshly cooked. Brought to your table, in portions enough for one or two people, you can keep ordering until you pop!
So, with what did we start? It just had to be a selection of sushi, steamed meat dumplings, vegetable spring rolls and crispy duck with pancakes, which were so good that we ordered,
instantly, another two portions. You can never have enough crispy duck and pancakes! There were so many starters to choose from, it was easy to find something we liked.
Once we had demolished the starters, we picked up the menu again, and turned our eyes to the main dishes. We selected Crispy Spicy Chicken, Chicken Curry, Beef with Ginger and Leeks and Tokyo Ribs, accompanied by Chicken Noodles and Special Fried Rice. All of this was plenty for the four of us. The nice thing about the portions is that they are not overwhelming, so you get to try different dishes, and look forward to returning really soon, to taste the rest. And, if you want more, you just pick up the menu and ask! But there is one

26th October - 1st November 2018 rule... you must eat what you order, or, at least, try some of it. If you order too much, you may be charged for it, which I think is a great policy. Being a chef, I
don’t like seeing food being wasted. Before we looked at the desserts, we decided we had to order another portion of crispy duck and pancakes. Well, it would have been rude not to! Then came the desserts. The cold selection was on a serve-yourself counter, and included several varieties of delicious ice creams. These went well with the choice of apple, banana or pineapple fritters with honey, again cooked to order, arriving at the table hot and fresh, in a

light, crunchy batter. And all this for only 12.95 euros per person! Under 8s eat for 6.95 euros, and there is no charge for under 4s. The price is fantastic value for money, and, judging by the number of people around us, it was very popular. Live Arico News OUR 2019 calendar is dedicated to the animals we have rehomed, as well as some of the island’s artists who help us raise money, and who have adopted, or care for, an abandoned animal.
The support they give us, along with the bars, restaurants and other businesses, is invaluable. The calendar costs five euros, and is currently on sale at the two Live Arico shops, Iceland Las Chafiras, and Champions Sports Bar, Fanabe. Danny and Elliott, aka Dragalicious, are also selling them at their shows. We would really appreciate being able to sell them from other outlets. If you would be willing to sell them
Calend from your business, please contact Siobhan on 676 26 18 25. We raised the printing costs through sponsorship, so every cent from sales goes to the welfare of our animals. Dog-walking club Every Saturday, the dogs have a fabulous time with the walkers, and are looking forward to going out for a wander again tomorrow, from 9am-1pm. Please feel free to pop along, even if it’s just for a chat. If you have any questions, WhatsApp Oceana on 0033 659 242 572, for further details. By Tara Scarlata MOST of you will have heard of Loro Parque, or maybe even visited. It’s a great day out for all ages, from 2 to 102, and everyone will find something they like! After visiting Loro many times over the last 15 years, this time we wanted to see a bit more. We were a group of eight, including children, and bought Premium tickets, which included the Discovery Tour, premium seating at the shows, and lunch. On arrival, we were greeted by the Discovery Tour team, and our guide was Maartje. We had a tour booked at 12pm, and we were advised as to what would be the best things to visit beforehand, and where to meet afterwards. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, giving us a map and outlining all the best show times, to make sure we didn’t miss anything. We were given prime seating for all the displays. This was great, because we didn’t need to rush to get good positions. The tour lasted 1¾ hours, and everyone loved it. We began by learning about the Thai village, and its 24-carat-gold emblem at the entrance to the park, and then moved on to the gorillas. I don’t want to give too much away about the tour, but it was fascinating to go behind the scenes to see how they are fed, and learn

why there is only a bachelor group.
Next, we ventured into the penguin area, and went
underneath to see how the staff look after all the water in the park; it was really fascinating. It was such an advantage having the guide giving interesting facts and anecdotes about the animals and staff, as well as the history and inner workings of what keeps Loro Parque running, day to day. During the tour, you are able to access areas not normally seen by the general public, which is really special. My favourite part was going round the animal embassy, watching the week-old parrots being hand-fed, and finding out about what the Loro Parque Fundacion does, around the world. Maartje, our guide, was
extremely informative, and happy to answer all kinds of questions. She engaged with everyone in the group, making it a fun experience. Afterwards, we had a great lunch, which was included in the Premium ticket. The team in the restaurant were really friendly, and took special care of the children in our group. The food was superb. We spent the rest of the afternoon going round the park at our leisure, visiting the white tigers, and seeing them take a dip in the pool. We walked through the Katandra treetops, with the birds flying over our heads, and checked out the cute, new, pygmy hippos. We also enjoyed the parrot, sea-lion, dolphin and Orca shows. Overall, the park was extremely clean, and the living conditions of the animals were very good. Going behind the scenes enables you to see how much attention is paid to the whole environment. After visiting Loro Parque so many times, I thought I had seen everything, but I learned so much. There are many secrets to discover, and I would definitely return and do it again. And it is excellent value for money, with the lunch being included. So, if you want to know how much an Orca weighs, what a penguin eats, why all the animals drink mineral water, or where all the animals in Loro Parque come from (and the answer is not the wild!), then the Discovery Tour is a must.

MANY people get confused by the different colours of road markings, which appear to be for pedestrian use, as crossings. There are, basically, three colours: the normal black and white, known, almost internationally, as zebra crossings, as well as red and white, and blue and white. What do they actually mean? There are two ways that this can be explained; the legal one and the simple one! Crossings are created by painting road markings on the wide area of a road, from one side to the other, forming a “crossing area”. This area is where drivers of vehicles, and animals, too, must permit pedestrians
39 CW
The different zebra crossings in Spain to cross safely. However, the other coloured “crossings”, ie red and blue, quite clearly state that you must not use these as zebra crossings, unless a sign clearly states they are for crossing on, although many people do, and many drivers do stop to allow pedestrians to cross at these coloured markings. Please note that the law quite clearly states that pedestrians are permitted to cross, which does not mean cyclists. So the only legal pedestrian crossings are those which are black and white. So what do the other coloured markings, which appear to be crossings, act as, in legal terms? Various studies have been carried out, in order to assist those making the traffic laws, and the slowing down of traffic. From these studies, what are known as traffic-calming
measures have been put into place, which has become more apparent, in recent years, by large road humps being placed in strategic points, and painted in either red or blue, leading people to think these are crossings. These are trafficcalming measures to slow down drivers in built-up areas, or dangerous parts of various roads
that were often bad accident spots. Some work and some don’t, as we all know. Also, unfortunately, some of the road humps do not comply with the law, and have had to be removed. Part of the reason for this is that it is the local authority ie ayuntamiento that is responsible for the positioning of these humps, and not the Guardia Civil ie traffic
police, or those making the laws. A lot of attention is given to traffic-calming measures and/or zebra crossings, in areas near schools and children’s playgrounds. It is highly possible that a child could run out from between parked cars without looking or thinking, directly into the path of an oncoming car, which may have little or no possibility of not
hitting the pedestrian. Quite often, pedestrians cause an accident, and harm not only the person, but also the car, and, in some cases, its driver and passengers. To sum up, you should only use the blackand-white marked areas to safely cross the roads, and should always look before crossing. Drivers have multiple things to consider when driving, and pedestrians can potentially be a hazard to them, through no fault of the drivers. From a driver’s point of view, you must be aware of all potential hazards; not only other cars, bikes and cyclists, but also pedestrians, especially children who are often still learning, or do not have, at that time, road sense and safety in their mind. They are only thinking about their ball which has just rolled into the road, which they want back!
To wash, or not to wash By Val Sainsbury MANY people handle our food before it comes into our kitchens, and sometimes the products are sprayed with inedible preservatives. Rinsing our foods can remove some of these chemicals, making them safer for us to eat. However, there are some foods that we should never wash. Chicken A lot of people believe in rinsing their chicken before cooking, to remove the bacteria on the meat. This practice is completely wrong, and very dangerous.
Putting the chicken under the tap, or dropping it in water, pollutes the water with the bacteria found in raw meat. This bacteria, invisible to the human eye, can splash onto the worktop, sink or table, or wherever it touches. One particularlycommon type of bacteria in raw chicken is salmonella. This can make anyone, especially children, sick with symptoms including fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. This disease can manifest itself between 12 -72 hours after the person was exposed to the bacteria, and the infection can last between 4-7 days. Published studies have shown that 47% of people who wash their raw chicken were affected. However, salmonella and other bacteria are destroyed when the meat is cooked at a
temperature of at least 165 degrees, which is why it is crucial to fully-cook the food, before consumption. Eggs When you buy eggs, they are covered with a protective layer that isolates the bacteria on them, and prevents contamination onto other foods. When you rinse the eggs before you crack or boil them, you remove this protective layer, thus risking contamination and infection. Fish Washing raw fish won't get rid of the bacteria, and it will spread the contamination to other surfaces, just like uncooked chicken. When to wash foods There are several occasions, though, when washing foods can be beneficial. It's just a case of knowing which ones! Canned foods When you take a can
out of the cupboard, it is more likely you will reach for the can opener than the tap. But the lid is designed to stop any bacteria from touching the food inside. When you take out the food, it is coming into contact with this bacteria. Rinsing the can before opening it eliminates this problem. Also, be sure to wash the food inside the can, to get rid of the preservatives used in the manufacturing of the product. Fruit and veg with edible peel Never consume produce with edible peel that is not washed. Rinse with cold water just before eating, and do not use soap. Some people think soap is a good way to kill the bacteria, but the pores of the vegetable or fruit will absorb particles of the soap, and these are unsuitable for human consumption.
To reduce even more bacteria, dry your washed produce with a paper towel. Even if you choose organic fruit and vegetables, you must still wash them before eating. Many hands have touched the food, from the farm to the shop, before it came to your kitchen.
Fruit and veg with nonedible peel The bacteria on peel can transfer to the inside of the fruit or vegetable, when you cut through it. When the knife slices through the peel of a lemon, for example, it transfers the bacteria to the fruit inside, so remember to wash the peel first.

Acosta’s last-gasp relief TENERIFE left it late, extremely late, to rescue a point from an evenly-matched game, which, for all but five minutes, saw both teams trading blows until a moment of stupidity from the visitors’ keeper. In the first 25 minutes, neither team threatened until Suso had a weak shot that got past Cristian in the Zaragoza goal, but was cleared off the line by Álex Muñoz, who returned to the Zaragoza starting XI after being left out in the last couple of matches. After half-an-hour, the home crowd at La Romareda starting whistling their team, but little changed… only a header over the bar from Delmás just before the break. Half-time couldn’t come quickly enough for the Aragonese team, who looked pleased to get to the dressing room at 0-0, while their coach, Imanol Idiakez, looked like a man under pressure. But Zaragoza came out more determined after the break, and in the 47th minute, Lasure beat keeper Dani and rattled the crossbar with a close-range shot. They continued to press, coming close with a lovely setpiece in the 55th minute, when Muñoz headed over

from a well-taken corner. Tenerife tried to counter, and Suso looked the brightest up front. But he could only put the ball into the side-netting, after an excellent display of skill in the 63rd minute. Just as the home crowd started singing songs, calling for the dismissal of Idiakez, Pombo nearly changed the jeers to cheers when he shot from the edge of the 18-yard box, only to force a good stop from Dani, so solid in the Tenerife goal. That was until the 85th
minute. Zaragoza had a corner which the Tenerife defence were dealing with easily. But Dani walked forward and pushed Medina to the ground, right in front of the referee! If he’s honest, he knows he was lucky to get away with a yellow card, rather than a straight red. The home team kept their cool, and Javi Ros stepped up and slotted in an easy penalty, straight down the middle, with three minutes remaining. Zaragoza could sense a home win, and Idiakez could
see his job safe for another week, until they gave away a cheap free-kick, 25 yards out, in the sixth minute of time added on. Luis Milla took it well for Tenerife, and Bryan Acosta headed home with the last touch of the game to equalise, silence the La Romareda, and, possibly, lose the home-team manager his job. Both teams were in desperate need of a win, yet
neither could achieve it. But this was a point won for José Luis Oltra’s men, who battled until the final whistle. The result still leaves Tenerife 19th in the league, and in desperate search of an elusive second win of the season. This will not be made any easier for them tomorrow (Saturday), when they tackle second-placed Alocorón at the Heliodoro.

Unlikely lads on top! AFTER their whitewash of home team Sandys, Pas O Nadas ‘A’ team sit proudly, if temporarily, at the summit of Division 1. In the chasing pack, The Pub put Mad Hatters to the sword with a comfortable 7-1 away
win, but Hatters were all smiles as they recorded a doubles win. Legends hosted The Loch-In ‘A’, but, with some fine darts and finish-ing, the visitors took a 7-1 victory back to San Blas. And Picasso’s legend Per hit a maximum 180, as his side beat outof-form Scooters ‘A’ by the same score. Palms Pool Bar welcomed back Dennis and Nora, who inspired the home team against Ourplace Playboys, who just lost out in the trebles to lose 5-3. But a superb night was had by all. Emerald Lounge had their best win of the season, beating Nauta Nomads 8-0, but the score could have been much closer had the doubles been hit. Naughty Nautas suffered a 5-3 loss when they played host to Sundowners, while Waterfall visited Palms Sports Bar, and emerged

vow to Mighty Marc’s Hamilton’s banish his demons champion leap MARC Marquez dislocated a shoulder during a bizarre celebration in last Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix, after securing his third straight MotoGP crown for Honda, and his fifth in all. The 25-year-old Spaniard, from Catalonia, was injured after enthusiastic hugs from his colleagues and British rider Scott Redding, at the Honda team’s home track, following his eighth success of the season. “The shoulder just popped out,” he said. “Luckily, with the adrenaline, it doesn’t hurt, but I’ll need to be careful not to overdo it on the dance-floor tonight.” he said. Redding said: “Once we
were rivals, big rivals, but now we have nothing but respect and fun. But I’m sorry for the dislocated shoulder.” Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso was Marc’s main title rival, but the Italian slid off while
second on the penultimate lap. Fellow-Honda rider Cal Crutchlow finished runnerup after Dovizioso’s fall, with Alex Rins (Suzuki) edging out Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) to take the third spot.
LEWIS Hamilton, still streets ahead of his nearest rival, is convinced that, in Mexico City on Sunday, he can win his fifth F1 World title, with two races to spare. The 33-year-old, now regarded as one of the finest FI drivers of all, refused to put the blame on Mercedes, after revealing that a problem with his machine contributed to his failure to wrap up the world championship in America on Sunday. After he had secured a brilliant pole, it was anticipated that he would be crowned champion in Austin, Texas. But a strategic error by Mercedes denied him a shot at victory. The water pump on Hamilton’s car was also replaced before the race, after a leak had been identified on team-mate Valtteri Bottas’ machine. A set-up issue when his vehicle was put back together, hastily, also came to light after the race, the Briton saying it affected his performance.
Hamilton had asked to be kept in the loop of Mercedes’ analysis by his race engineer, Pete Bonnington, before he headed south of the border. “You saw that the car was in a million pieces on Sunday morning, so that was not ideal for the race,” he admitted. “If we hadn’t had a morning like that, our race outcome would, potentially, have been different. “We had another problem, which cost us time, and the issue I was having with the car was the biggest one. Given I had this deficit, I was having to push that much harder to recover the time I lost.” He added: “I will get an email update from Bono, and then we will sit down in Mexico and go through it all. “But no one is to blame. We take the blame together and we give ourselves a kick up the backside, and realise that we have got to keep working and keep pushing.” And he pledged: “We will come back stronger!”
