El Mojon work is right on schedule

Cont. from Front

Fraud by medical men led to riches

The staggering sum is believed to have been raked in by the pair, who issued false invoices. The operation came to a head on Tuesday afternoon, when the Guardia Civil surprised residents in the Santa Cruz area of La Salle. Several undercover agents entered the pharmacy, which was opened to the public recently, in Garcilaso de la Vega. They were carrying out a search, authorised by a judge, for first-hand proof of the couple’s alleged fraudulence. In addition to the searchers, there were also many officers outside, assigned to citizen security, who later joined the hunt themselves. Thanks to their collective evidence, gleaned from giving the premises a thorough going-over, the Guardia Civil arrested the doctor and pharmacist. They charged the pair with conducting crimes against public health, including fraud, and falsifying documentation. The Guardia’s investigation is continuing.

WORK on the third phase of South Tenerife Hospital El Mojon, which involves the obstetrics and surgical block, is right on schedule. That’s the message from Canarian President Fernando Clavijo, whose government is co-funding the entire project, along with the European Regional Development Fund (Feder). The cost of equipment for these areas has already exceeded five million euros, and the hospital, already functioning in some departments, is now in the process of taking on 200 more professionals for next year. They will provide the services required for the delivery rooms and operating theatres. And, overall, there will be five operating theatres, three delivery rooms and ward facilities, as well as pharmacy, sterilisation and support services. Work on the MRI Scanner is also underway, and new equipment for endoscopies should be installed this month.

Self-employed are given a fairer deal A LANDMARK deal, to protect the rights of Spain’s selfemployed, has been introduced by the Government. The changes to Spanish taxation, revealed as part of the General State Budgets 2019, will link the self-employed workers’ contributions to their actual incomes. The changes are part of a government roll-out of fiscal measures, to achieve a fairer society. And, from next year, the changes

mean that those with lower incomes will pay a lower state contribution. The Government’s budget

statement said: “After seven years of cuts and suffocation, our country has regressed on equal

opportunities, in social cohesion, in freedoms and rights, in democratic quality and in coexistence.” The announcement comes as the Government also agrees to end the so-called “false self-employment” before the end of this year, by including a law that says workers offering their services for hire are, in monetary terms, employed by the company hiring them. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias signed the lawful agreement at the Moncloa Palace in Madrid, this month.

Man who tried to sell endangered crocodile GUARDIA Civil officers, attached to Seprona, their nature-protection division, have charged a 60-year-old man from Santa Ursula with criminal injustice against an endangered species. In August, Seprona officers spotted that a full crocodile specimen,

a “Crocodylus acutus” or American Crocodile, measuring some 3.5 metres long, was being sold on the internet for 4,500 euros. The officers knew, immediately, that they had stumbled upon a listed, endangered species, normally protected internationally. An officer contacted the

seller, asking for a specific permit, to show that he had obtained the crocodile in the correct manner. As expected, the man, who did not have the appropriate paperwork, was later charged with crimes relating to the protection of endangered species.

Main Adeje roads being overhauled

WORK on resurfacing and upgrading Adeje’s principal roads, throughout the borough, has been carried out in recent months, and it remains ongoing. The work has been divided into two phases: one in the mainly-tourist zone and the other in the mostly-residential areas, with streets and avenues targeted for improvement. The improvements are being introduced to meet the heavy demands of a region, which

accommodates more than 200,000 people, passing through on a daily basis, as well as the cars and workers serving the area. Works Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera said: “This is an important investment, which could cost in the region of 3½m euros. “We are almost finished in Costa Adeje, and we’re moving on to phase two, which is concentrated in the residential villages and neighbourhoods.” Included in the plans, she said, was work to improve mobility and pavements, for those with special needs.

Druggies dealt from local cannabis club THREE men have been charged by the National Police with drug-trafficking, at the premises of a legal cannabis association in South Tenerife.

Canaries’ flight boost for winter

AIRLINES are offering nearly 25 million flight seats at Canarian airports, from now until 30th March next year, which is a 5.7% improvement on the 2017-2018 winter season. The extra seats relate to more than 15.7 million seats for international flights, and over 9.1m for national flights,

distributed between over 173,300 planes. In addition, the number of air routes projected for the Canaries is 899, increasing last winter’s figures by 29. Tenerife South will have over 5.6m seats, spread over 128 destinations with 48 airlines, and a 10% growth. Gran Canaria Airport will have a 5.3% growth to 7.9m seats, with 50 airlines scheduling 75 routes, which is eight more than last winter. Flights will connect 139

destinations, with most from mainland Spain, Germany, UK, Norway and Sweden. After Spain, most flights will connect to Manchester and Gatwick airports, followed by those in Germany. Lanzarote Airport will feature 37 airlines, with 155 scheduled routes, which is seven more than last winter. And Fuerteventura will see 41 airlines, with 147 scheduled routes, a drop of four from previous winter seasons.

Police detained the trio, aged 21, 24 and 38, after confiscating 2.133gm of marihuana, 25gm of hashish and 2,565 euros, all in small notes. The cops launched an investigation when they were made aware of possible drug-dealings at the premises, where a legal cannabis association had

been set up. The cops had discovered that several people, not associated with the group, were buying hashish for their own use, or to sell on. After giving verbal statements, the three men were released by the National Police, and are awaiting a court hearing.

Designer-drug trio are locked up for 7½ years THREE men from North Africa, arrested in January this year in Tenerife after being caught with a designer drug in their possession, were each sentenced to a 7½-year prison sentence on Monday. All three, who must also cough up a huge fine, were arrested, initially, when National Police officers, out and about in Puerto de la Cruz on patrol, spotted a particular vehicle being driven carelessly. The officers followed the car, which eventually ended up in Santa Cruz, They then saw two of the men stepping inside a cafeteria, while the third person appeared to be their look-out. The cops bided their time, and approached the car when his companions returned. They questioned them, as well as searching the trio, and the car. They discovered almost a kilo of the designer drug MDMA, in a bag on the back seat, and all three were arrested, and charged with drugtrafficking.

The bag was later checked out by the cops, who found it contained 77% pure MDMA, which has a street value of 38,000 euros. During the court hearings, none of the accused would admit to owning the substance. But they contradicted themselves when one of them admitting trying to sell the MDMA on to some Russians, to clear a debt. All three pleaded not guilty, but the evidence suggested otherwise, and they were each sentenced to a 7½-year jail term, as well as being ordered, jointly, to pay a 290,000euro fine.

Saints’ feast days draw Immigrants land extra visitors to Adeje in Los Cristianos

ADEJE Council was extremely busy in the early part of the week, ensuring that the municipal cemetery was ready for the many extra visitors anticipated yesterday (Thursday) and today, with 1st2nd November marking the feast days of All Saints and All Souls, respectively. These

holy

days

are

celebrated, nationally and internationally, with extra masses, and families visiting cemeteries where their loved ones have been laid to rest. Adeje cemetery was open to the public throughout the week from Tuesday, with workers making sure it was in top condition for visitors by cleaning, painting and planting new flowers in the various patios etc. Esther Rivero Vargas, the Councillor with responsibility for the area, said: “These have been important days, when we pay respect to those who

have gone before us. And we know it’s essential that the cemetery is in top condition for visiting families, because it is a very relevant date for them.” She added: “Our goal is always to make the place one of tranquillity and harmony.” Extra services were staged throughout the borough on Wednesday and yesterday, while today (Friday), the following masses will be held: at Adeje Cemetery chapel at 9am, and at 6pm at Adeje Cemetery chapel, Armeñime and Fañabe, with a 7.30pm mass at La Caleta.

ANOTHER patera, carrying 72 African immigrants, arrived in Los Cristianos port at around 5.45am on Sunday.

According to a source from the Emergency Services, all aboard the small boat were male, from Gambia, but the source also said 26 of the arrivals were minors. Once the boat was navigated to the port side, the occupants were all assisted by the Emergency Services and the Red Cross, who were waiting on hand to help them All 72 were assessed, and, though a few of them had symptoms of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), none of the immigrants had to be transferred to hospital.

Police shatter huge synthetic-drugs lab

Ship sparks port blaze

A recipe found by cops, said to be for methamphetamine

SPAIN’S National Police have arrested 16 people and seized 14,500 litres of chemical products needed to manufacture drugs. A SHIP somehow managed to crash into a cargo crane at the Port of Barcelona on Wednesday morning, causing it to topple over, and burst into flames. The resulting fire forced the port’s entire south pier to be evacuated. But four units from Barcelona’s Fire Brigade, along with the Medical Emergency System (SEM), dashed to the scene to control the blaze. At this time, there have been no reported injuries as a result of the incident, and the surrounding area is reportedly suffering from major traffic delays, because of the ongoing operation.

Crash batters female biker

A WOMAN biker suffered several injuries to her body on Sunday, after colliding with a car on the Palm Mar roundabout. When the emergency ambulance arrived, medics stabilised the woman before transferring her to the Quiron hospital for further treatment.

Officers, who conducted a 18-month investigation, located and dismantled what they believed to be “one of the largest synthetic-drug laboratories in Spain”. They also commandeered the chemicals, which could

have been used to process more than 1,000kg of amphetamine and MDMA. Revealing police footage shows officers intercepting chemical products, along with the paraphernalia used to synthesise drugs, including tanks, cooking units and even recipes with scientific diagrams. Police described their find as “a laboratory for the large-scale use of synthetic drugs”. It happened just days after Malaga Police discovered six tonnes of cocaine,

disguised among bananas. This latest investigation also led to the cops impounding 90kg of marijuana in France, 145kg of marijuana and 261kg of hashish in the UK, along with 199kg of marijuana in Spain. The drug-andinfrastructure haul came after police began their investigations in May last year, working in collaboration with the Tax Agency, the UK’s National Crime Agency and the French National Police.

Three-car crash leaves four hurt

Death fall of mum and son

A WOMAN aged 37, and her young son, died on Monday morning after plummeting from the sixth floor of her Huerto Manú street apartment in the southern Spain district of Murcia. The Emergency Services there were alerted at 6.07am by a neighbour, who claimed to have heard a “thump” in the street. The neighbour claims to have seen the two people lying on the pavement. Ambulance, Local and National Police units attended the scene, but the woman had died, immediately, from the fall. However, her son was stabilised at the scene, briefly, before being transferred to Murcia’s Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital. But the youngster’s injuries proved too severe and he was pronounced dead in the hospital. An investigation has been launched into the circumstances. Local sources say the woman lived with her mother and her son in the apartment there.

FOUR men were injured, some considerably, after being involved in a collision between three cars on Monday morning. The accident happened on the TF66, known to locals as the old back road, which runs adjacent to the TF1, connecting Guaza to Los Cristianos.

The Emergency Services were called at 6.45am, requesting assistance from an ambulance and the fire brigade, because two of the three vehicles were in flames. When the ambulance arrived, the crew assessed the injured parties, and all four needed medical assistance. They had all suffered different injuries, but, once stabilised, they were taken to different

hospitals, depending on the severity of their damage, for further treatment. Fire-fighters extinguished the flames and removed the vehicles from the road, to ensure that drivers could continue their journeys. The Local Police were also available to assist in the emergency, and they also controlled the traffic, in advance of the morning rush-hour.

Hapless Brazilians exploited by gang NATIONAL POLICE have taken apart a criminal gang, who sexually-exploited young, Brazilian transsexuals in an apartment in Spain. Fifteen victims have been freed, while four suspects, believed to be responsible for imprisoning them, have been arrested and imprisoned. National Police report that the victims were from “humble origins” in Brazil, who were, allegedly, coerced into moving to Spain, where they were forced into prostitution. Once taken to an apart-

ment there, the victims were unable to leave the property. They were subjected to “continuous, serious threats and physical attacks”, and forced to “consume and sell narcotic substances”, according to a National Police statement. Police claim the criminal gang who imprisoned the victims were probably able to coerce the young Brazilians by manipulating “deeplyrooted beliefs”, surrounding “santería and black magic”, practised commonly in their country of origin.

Cruise-ship leak gives passengers a sinking feeling Romanians forced to beg, acting like human statues

PASSENGERS were left terrified on rough seas as their cruise ship began taking on tonnes of water in the Atlantic Ocean, following “a loud bang”.

The Royal Caribbean vessel left Southampton last Friday for a 10-night tour of the Canaries, but it was forced to make an emergency stop at the nearest port, in Vigo, NorthWest Spain, on the Sunday. According to holidaymakers on board, the crew managed a temporary repair until the ship arrived in port, where they were forced to close off part of it. Paul Edwards, 49, who was travelling with his wife, two children and two friends, said they were kept in the dark about the damage, which, they were

told, was a “small, technical difficulty”. Mr Edwards, from Worcester, said: “The sea had been very rough during the day, and we were woken by a loud bang in the early hours of Sunday morning, but we eventually went back to sleep. “When we woke the next day and opened out curtains, we suddenly realised that we had docked at the port in Vigo, which we weren’t due to arrive at until the following Saturday.” He added: “We were told that it was a small technical problem with the stabiliser, and that we would be updated by 6pm that evening.” But Mr Edwards’ family began seeing divers going under the ship, and realised “something more serious had happened”. The bewildered 49-year-old said: “A large part of the ship had taken on water, and

they were forced to close part of it to passengers. We were then told that we would be sailing again at 2pm on Monday, but this had already cut our holiday short. “We were only able to spend half a day in the Canary Islands and Tenerife, visiting only two out the five or six places we should have visited. “We have massively lost out, and my son was frightened to go to sleep because he thought the ship could sink at any time. “We paid £1,200 each for the trip, and the compensation for this is just not good enough.’ The company director claims Royal Caribbean International offered them 25% of what they paid for their £7,200 holiday, as onboard credit, and a further 25% off a future cruise, despite their traumatic experience.

POLICE have smashed a trafficking ring, which brought Romanians to Spain, many of them disabled, where they were forced to beg in the streets, acting as human statues. Officers arrested three suspected gang members, including its alleged leader, and freed 10 Romanians, being held by the network as part of the operation, in the northwestern region of Galicia. Some of the six women set free had also been forced into prostitution. The ring recruited its victims in Romania, promising them jobs in Spain’s hospitality sector. But, once there, they were forced to tour the streets of Santiago de Compostela, a worldfamous pilgrimage city, begging on their knees or dressed as human statues or mimes, “regardless of weather conditions”. Gang members would threaten victims to make

them beg, and, said a police statement: “They were especially violent when some of these people became sick, and could not go out in the streets”. The gang would target “vulnerable” people in Romania, often with disabilities or learning difficulties, “which would make them more profitable as beggars”, the statement added. All the money collected by its victims went to the gang members, who forced them to stay in crowded dirty lodgings in the nearby city of A Coruna. Santiago de Compostela’s cathedral, where Saint James the apostle is said to be buried, is the final stop of the popular “Camino de Santiago”, or “Way of St James” pilgrimage route, dating back to the Middle Ages. The city’s historic centre, with its arcaded streets and stone architecture, which has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is visited by millions of tourists every year.

Deadline for wind parks THE Disa Group, a major energy provider, has completed the construction of 44 MW of wind parks in the Canaries. It is the company’s first wind project in the region, and it now has its fingers crossed that grid operator

Red Electrica de Espana (REE) will finish work on the sub-station, which will allow the flow of energy to consumers. Santiago Rull, who heads Disa Renovables, said the firm had asked REE to speed up the process, so that the new parks could start the operation before the Spanish

Government’s 31st December deadline. Rull added: “It would be unfortunate that, after so much effort from the whole team, 25% of the 250-MW quota for the

Canary Islands would be left out because REE could not finish the connection points in time.” Disa, which has been guaranteeing energy supply in the Canary Islands for 85

years, expected to reach 67 MW of operating wind and solar capacity, by the end of the year. It also has plans to develop renewable energy projects on mainland Spain.

Bulgarians given inside info on Adeje’s tourism A GROUP of councillors from the Bulgarian resort of Nessebar, on a fact-finding tour, have visited Adeje to discuss tourismdevelopment ideas. They had a working meeting with Adeje Council members to quiz them about how the town has grown, in the last 30 years, into one of the leading holiday destinations in Europe. Leading the Bulgarian delegation was Rumen Kulev, President of the local Nessebar Council, accompanied by elected officials and departmental heads, with Carmen Rosa González, Manuel Luis Méndez and Zebenzui Chinea representing Adeje. Also present, and open to answering questions from the delegation, were Robert Ucelay, President of CEST (South Tenerife Business Circle), Jordi Esplugas (Association of Adeje Commerce and Enterprise), and those responsible for the ExpoVida project, which is a health tourism initiative, under construction in the borough. The visitors were keen to know how Adeje had evolved from its designation

as a rural town, mainly, to embracing tourism in a sustainable manner. They were also interested in such issues as traffic management, and the parallel developments of alternative types of tourism to “sun and beach”. Nessebar is one of the bestknown tourist destinations and seaports on the Black Sea, in what has become a popular area with several large resorts. In fact, the largest, Sunny Beach, is situated immediately to the north of Nessebar. The resort has a resident population of about 12,000, and archaeological studies have confirmed five chronological periods of urbanisation on the peninsula surrounding Nessebar, through the end of the second millennium BC. It included the Thracian protopolis, the Greek colony Mesambria, a Roman-ruled village to the early Christian era, the mediaeval settlement and a Renaissance-era town, known as Mesemvria or Nessebar. Historically, the town has, on several occasions, found itself on the frontier of a threatened empire, and, as such, has a rich history. And, because of the city’s abundance of historic buildings, UNESCO added Nessebar to its list of World Heritage Sites in 1983.

Brit caught after night-time spree

A BRITISH resident, with a police record in the South of Tenerife, has been arrested after committing three night-time robberies, with force, in commercial properties.

He was alleged to have broken shop windows, and made off with items worth 29,000 euros. The 43-year-old crept around the Arona and Adeje municipalities during the night, selecting commercial establishments which sold fashion, accessories and perfumery. He used strong objects to smash the exterior glass,

and then climbed into the properties and helped himself to sunglasses, perfumes, jewellery and watches. Once the police report was completed, the Brit was remanded to the Guardia Instructional Court, where the arrest was carried out by National Police officers and the Local Comisaria del Sur de Tenerife.

It’s November… a time for theatre, dance and culture ADEJE’S Culture Department has announced details of the XXI Theatre and Dance festival, which features performances in the town’s cultural centre, and on the main streets, every Friday in November. The theatrical presentations, say the organisers, are humorous, reflectimg social criticism. Tonight (Friday), dance company Nómada presents “Para Regalo”, and, the following Friday, it’s the turn of Burka Teatre company, which brings “Cosas del XVI” to the streets of Adeje. This second show, set in the Middle Ages, is free to the public, and the play starts in the Plaza de España at 8.30pm. During the second half of the month, on 16th November, Impulso will stage Lacura, a prize-winning show starring Bibiana Monje. Abubukaka will bring an adaptation in verse of the classic Bram Stoker tale “Drácula” to Adeje, on 23rd November. And, finally, Lamedinaes Company presents “Ay Carmela” on 30th November.

Bully sees red because woman spoke Spanish A SPANISH woman, conversing on a mobile with her family at home, was physically assaulted by a man on the North London underground line for not speaking English. The incident happened in front of a train-load of people, and witnesses said the man was deeply offended because she was not speaking English. He approached the poor woman, screaming at her that she was in England, and that English is what she should have been speaking.

The woman couldn’t believe the man’s reaction and became extremely nervous, so much so that she could only answer him in Spanish. He then reacted by attacking her, and hitting her brutally in the face, which caused her to bleed, immediately. Some passengers pressed the emergency button, causing the train to stop abruptly. But the assailant ran from the train, leaving the woman in a state of shock. Sadly, no one ran after the man, but authorities later claimed that an arrest had been made, and that a 56-year-old man had been charged with GBH.

Statistics released by AnyVan.com show that Spain is the most popular destination for UK residents, fantasising about a move overseas, with 13% of the respondents picking it as their No.1 choice. Those dreamers would, if possible, join at least 300,000 British citizens already living in the country. Australia and New Zealand ranked joint second in the dream-move table, with 12% each. Other popular moves on the wish-list included the US (10%), Canada (9%), Italy (7%) and France (6%). The data shows that age is a major factor in determining the popularity of a dream move abroad. And young adults prefer countries with more opportunities for lucrative career prospects and lavish lifestyles. The US came out top choice for under-34s, with 16% listing this as their favourite, followed by Australia and then Spain. Dubai was also more popular with younger adults, with 4% dreaming of a move to the Middle East. But for adults over 55, New

Zealand (14%) was their dream move. Brits living on England’s south coast seem keener to keep their coastal lifestyle, while Italy is more popular with people living in Southampton (12%) and Brighton (15%). New Zealand (13%) was tops for Londoners, followed by the US and Canada (both 11%) and Australia (10%). Angus Elphinstone, head of AnyVan.com, said: “It’s nearly a national sport in the UK, to dream about moving, from flicking through property prices and listings on Rightmove, to sitting down to watch one of the vast number of primetime TV shows, offering advice to those looking to change homes for a place in the sun. “Our research highlighted where people dream of moving to, but 16% of residents didn’t want to move anywhere. With such a vast number of different landscapes, coastal views and green spaces, it’s easy to see why so many are living their dream in the UK, and don’t feel they need to move elsewhere.” The figures were supplied by Opinium, which polled 2,000 British citizens in the UK, in September.

Wolf-pack member sacked by the army A MEMBER of the infamous La Manada (the wolf pack) gang, who sexually abused a young woman, has been kicked out of the Spanish army. Alfonso Jesús Cabezuelo is one of a group of five friends, who were convicted of abusing the woman at Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls fiesta in 2016. The case hit the headlines in Spain after they were convicted of the lesser charge of sexual abuse, rather than sexual assault, which would have attracted lengthier sentences. The latter category includes rape, and the prosecutor had asked in the original trial for an 18-year sentence for each member of the gang. Instead, they were each given nine years, which attracted chants of “it’s not abuse, it’s rape”, from crowds, outside the courthouse earlier this year. The case has since moved on to the Supreme Court for a final ruling, with the gang members remaining free. Cabezuelo, 30, maintained

his position in the army and received his basic pay, despite not being posted anywhere. Now, though, Spain’s Ministry of Defence has decided not to wait any longer for a final ruling, and has cancelled his contract. He had signed up to serve until he was 45, and, if the Supreme Court decides to acquit Cabezuelo, he could re-apply for army service. The 18-year-old woman had, originally, made a complaint of rape. But in their judgement, the magistrates said the men had not used enough violence for it to be considered rape. Such was the anger about the case, however, that it led to calls for Spain’s criminal code to be amended.

Women-only hotel to open next year

SOM Hotels, a Spanish Group, plans to open its first women’s- only establishment next spring, in Porto Cristo, on the west coast of Mallorca. But only females over the age of 18 will be accepted at the Som Dona Hotel, and

group President Joan Enric Capella said: “It is not about women’s rights or feminism, but to satisfy an increasing demand.” The concept was developed after the hotel chain conducted a survey, in which females expressed interest in a women-only hotel. And the idea was matched by a “growing business trend, focused on a female

audience”. Som Dona Hotel will feature 39 elegant rooms, with a pink-andwhite décor. It will also offer a swimming pool, free WiFi, health-conscious cuisine made with “zero-kilometre” products (all locallygrown), a spa, live music, and a rooftop bar. And, you’ve probably guessed, Som Hotels will also hire a mainly-female staff.

Government plans radical change to child-abuse law THE Spanish Government is presenting a reform to the Criminal Code, so that sexual-abuse cases involving minors have no statute of limitations.

It means putting paedophilia offences on the same level as terrorist attacks and genocide, which are the only other crimes without a time limit. Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo alerted the Vatican’s Secretary

of State, Pietro Parolin, during their two-hour meeting in Rome on Monday. The Socialist Party (PSOE) politician also broached other delicate issues, concerning stateChurch relations, including tax benefits for bishops, and land and properties claimed by the Catholic Church in Spain. The meeting came at a particularly-uncomfortable moment for the ecclesiastical hierarchy, given recent news stories published by respected newspaper EL PAÍS, which prove that the institution

silenced sexual offences committed by the clergy for decades, despite knowing about them. A statement, released by the Spanish Government shortly after the meeting, read: “The Church has conveyed its concern, which is shared by the Government, over the need to deliver justice to the victims of abuse, and prevent these incidents taking place in the future. “As such, the Government has informed the Vatican of changes to the Criminal Code, with a view to removing the statute of limitations from these

offences.” The Spanish Government is planning to go further than was expected with this Criminal Code reform, which was expected to include an extension of the time frames within the statute of limitations. Currently, the time period begins when the victim turns 18, and, according to the severity of the case, the courts have between 5-15 years to act. That means the oldest possible age of the victim is 33, when the statute of limitations expires. But many victims take years to contemplate the

abuse they have suffered, and to talk about it. In many cases, that means the offenders cannot be prosecuted. Studies carried out by Save the Children suggest that the average age at which victims decide to talk is 35.

Mass murderer took selfies, of his family! A BRAZILIAN man, on trial for butchering his family, “took selfies with their dismembered bodies”, according to the evidence of a witness at his trial in Guadalajara, near Madrid.

Brazilian Patrick Nogueira, pictured, is alleged to have taken the sick photos after murdering his aunt, uncle and two young cousins, chopping them up and putting them into plastic bin-bags. The witness, not named, said he saw the photos on Nogueira’s phone, but how he saw them was not made clear. Nogueira, 19 at the time of the 2016 killings, has acknowledged killing his relatives, but argues that he is mentally disturbed and suffers from alcoholism. The 21-year-old is accused of stabbing his four relatives to death at their home, near Madrid, and will be behind bars for decades, if convicted. His aunt and uncle were in their early forties, and his cousins were aged just one and four. And

though Nogueira claims he has mental problems, prosecutors argue that he is a psychopath, and that his actions showed premeditation. They say that Nogueira took the bin-bags with him to the house, which suggested he had planned to kill his family before arriving. They also claim that the accused, then a teenager, sent another friend, from Brazil, several WhatsApp messages about the gruesome murders and

photos of the bodies, during and after the killings. He then tried to cover up the crime by chopping up his aunt and uncle with tree-pruning shears, said prosecutors. It wasn’t until a month later that neighbours complained of a stench coming from the home, where cops would discover the bodies. Nogueira was arrested in October 2016, after arriving in the country earlier that year. The trial continues.

The longest test drive in history!

A BEWILDERED British expat is on a mission to discover just why thieves took his car on a 14,500km journey around Europe. A Spanish couple carjacked 24-year-old Elliot Higgins during a test drive of his Ford Mondeo. The expat, from Chiclana de la Frontera, in Cadiz, had taken them for a drive, after they contacted him, via his advert, to sell the car online. But he was amazed when the man and the woman sped off as he filled it up during a petrol stop, halfway through the test. “I couldn’t believe they stole it from right under my nose, in broad daylight,” he told The Olive Press. “I did feel a little naive and baffled.” Some three weeks later, Elliot, an amateur film-

maker from Crawley, Kent, received a police call to say his car had been dumped at a dealership in Alafar, Valencia, some 780km away. The car’s GPS radio revealed that the stolen vehicle had been driven all the way to the Czech Republic and Poland. According to witnesses, the thieves, one of them armed with a gun, stole a

Mercedes in Valancia, soon after. When Elliot identified the suspects to Guardia Civil officers in Chiclana, the police revealed that the pair were known in the area for stealing motorbikes. They confirmed that the man, aged 32, had been arrested 38 times for other crimes, including sexual assault. Elliot said: “I am glad it happened the way it did, because they were planning on stealing my car, regardless. They might have shot me.” The car-jackers are believed to be linked to drug-dealing and people-trafficking, as well as the alleged sexual assault. Elliot is convinced the thieves are “small fish” and part of something bigger. But the amateur film-maker is now planning to turn his woes into a mini-crime drama.

Supreme Court rejects thesis challenge about PM by Vox opponents PROSECUTORS, who found “no criminal offence” relating to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s PhD thesis, have recommended that the Supreme Court reject legal action filed by far-right political party Vox. Luis Navajas, the Supreme Court’s Deputy Prosecutor, argues that the case brought by Vox is based “entirely on media reports”. He adds that it does not give “any additional concrete data, of which the party may have had knowledge”, and which would allow the plagiarism accusations to “fit in with the offence of simulation”, as defined by the Penal Code. Vox’s claim was on the basis of an offence of forgery and corruption, the latter jointly for Sánchez “having illegally and fraudulently promoted”’ a career in marketing for his wife, Begoña Gómez. Members accused Sánchez of having used “his political and institutional power” for his wife to appear on record as a Master’s-degree tutor in a State university, “despite not having the required academic qualifications”. The “forgery” and “corruption” allegations con-

cerning Sánchez’s thesis “refer to journalistic news reports, derived from an extraordinarily vague and non-precise description of facts”. As for claims of Sánchez abusing his position for his wife’s professional benefit, the prosecutor says: “They merit little attention since they lack a description of the facts alluded to, and which could be confronted and evaluated, within the framework of the Penal Code.” Queues built up outside Madrid’s Camilo José Cela University in midSeptember, after Sánchez gave permission for his 342-page leatherbound hardbacked dissertation to be viewed, following accusations of plagiarism in the right-wing newspaper ABC. The Prime Minister announced plans to take legal action against the reporters for libel, and was furious that they were “trashing” his “many years of hard work”. University officials were also unhappy with the allegations, pointing out that doctoral students worked closely on their theses, alongside two supervisors. They also stressed that the finished piece was thoroughly reviewed by a panel, in accordance with standard academic procedures, before the title of PhD was granted.

How we helped Armstrong become first man on Moon TWO Spanish technicians have spoken about working for space agency NASA on the Apollo 11 Moon landing, just as the film of the world-shattering mission has been released. Carlos Gonzalez and Jose Manuel Grandela both worked at the Fresnedillas de la Oliva tracking station in the Madrid region, in the 1960s. And they were there during the Apollo 11 mission, nearly 50 years ago, in July 1969, when Gonzalez controlled its communications. The pair attended a recent event at the Astrobiology Centre, in the Madrid region, held to mark the premiere of The First Man. The film, starring Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, dramatises the Apollo 11 mission. Curiously, its worldwide release has now been celebrated, some nine

months before the 50th anniversary of the most amazing story of all. Gonzalez said he and Grandela had been in a privileged position, because they could listen to

conversations between the Apollo 11 crew and mission control in Houston, before anyone else. Both were the first people to hear Armstrong confirm he and Buzz Aldrin had

touched down on the Moon with the words: “The eagle has landed”. Gonzalez said Armstrong wanted to step on to the Moon, no matter what happened, and he recalled

an exchange between the astronaut and Houston, when told he had to wait. “I’ve been preparing for this for years; I’ve travelled 400,000 kilometres, I’ve gone to the Moon with certain difficulties, and now you tell me I have to sleep?”, Gonzalez remembered Armstrong saying. “Houston had proposed to abort the mission, but Armstrong took semi-automatic control, and, with Buzz Aldrin giving him altitude and speed data, he landed with about 30 seconds of fuel to spare,” said Gonzalez. He also remembered Armstrong asking how he had managed to stumble on his way out of the lunar module, despite practising 300 times on Earth. Grandela, 23 at the time, said the mission was an important step in the Space Race, between the United States and the Soviet Union. “The mission unleashed an avalanche of innovations in engineering, informatics, materials and fuels, from which all of humanity is benefiting today,” he said.

Time may be limited for tax-free pension transfers

By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

WE are often asked what will happen to UK pension rules for expatriates, after Brexit, and the reality is that no-one knows for certain, including the British government. Reassuringly, the UK's minister for pensions and financial inclusion has confirmed that expatriates will keep the right to make pension transfers within the EU, whatever happens with Brexit. However,

another government figure has admitted that the tax treatment of overseas transfers could potentially change. The current situation Many expatriates benefit from transferring their UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Today, residents in Spain are not taxed when transferring UK pension funds to a QROPS located in an EU/EEA (European Economic Area) country, such as Malta. But transfers outside the bloc have been subject to a 25% UK “overseas-tax charge”

since March 2017 (unless you live in the same jurisdiction as the QROPS). On leaving the EU, the UK loses its obligation to maintain freedom of movement for capital, offering more scope for the Treasury to recoup revenue from UK nationals living in Europe. As such, many spectators expect the overseas tax charge could extend, to capture transfers within the EU/EEA, post-Brexit. According to economic secretary to the Treasury, John Glen: “Whether or not these transfers will be exempt… once the

UK leaves the EU, is dependent upon the terms of future exit agreement between the UK Government and the EU.” In any event, nothing is set to change until at least the Brexit due date of 29th March 2019. But, without a guarantee that taxfree transfers will continue beyond then, it is sensible for anyone considering transferring to act sooner, rather than later, especially as the process for pension transfers can take several months to complete. QROPS benefits Transferring to

a QROPS can consolidate several UK pensions under one, tax-efficient roof suitable for Spain, sheltering funds from UK taxation, and future changes to pension rules. Once in a QROPS, funds no longer count towards your lifetime pension allowance (LTA), enabling unlimited growth, without attracting 55% or 25% LTA tax penalties. QROPS usually provide greater investment diversification, estate planning flexibility, and more freedom to vary income, compared with UK pension schemes. And, while UK pension payments are usually made in sterling, and, therefore, sensitive to volatile exchange rates during Brexit uncertainty, many QROPS offer multicurrency flexibility, to hold and draw your funds in your currency of choice. Funds transferred to a QROPS will also avoid the risk of a no-deal Brexit “cliffedge”, in which some UK, personal-pension providers could lose the legal right to pay benefits to expatriates. However, transferring is not appropriate for everyone, and differences between QROPS providers and jurisdictions could

affect the tax benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer expatriates in Spain comparable benefits to QROPS, so take personalised advice, to establish the most suitable approach for you. As pensions are likely to play an important part in your long-term financial security, it is crucial that you only use a fully authorised and regulated provider. Your adviser should take into account your unique circumstances, income requirements, goals and tolerance for risk - as well as the cross-border tax implications - to establish the right solution for you and your family. Even if transferring is not right for you, with so much uncertainty ahead, now is the time to review your pension arrangements, so you can secure the retirement of your choice in Spain, whatever Brexit brings. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices, which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Island’s budget boost

THE Canarian Government has distributed six million euros between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, which adds up to a 7% increase in the 2019 regional budget. Finance Minister Rosa Davila said the budgets were improved because the financial crisis of recent years had

impacted the islands’ capital budgets and investments. Augusto Hidalgo, Mayor of Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas said: “This is the best news we have had regarding budgets since 2011, when the first budget cuts began, because of the economic crisis.”

Louis Theroux’s Altered States: Love Without Limits

Sunday 4th November, BBC2, 21.00

For hundreds of years, romantic relationships in Western society have been based on the idea of monogamy: two people, together, forever. But with nearly half of all US marriages ending in divorce, perhaps the traditional model is no longer fit for purpose. In Love Without Limits, Louis travels to Portland, Oregon, the heart of a movement seeking to re-write the rulebook on how we conduct intimate relationships and experience family life. Portland, whose city motto is ‘Keep Portland Weird’, is seen as the US capital of polyamory and ethical non-monogamy, the practice of openly and transparently having multiple relationships that go further than just sex. Louis embeds himself with families who have made the bold decision to open up their relationships in a number of different ways; whether inviting others into existing relationships or allowing partners to seek romance elsewhere. He discovers that for many, more partners means more love and more happiness. But for others, multiple relationships have led to jealousy, upset and broken hearts.

week’s TV Choice Songs of Praise: Wilfred Owen Special Sunday 4th November, BBC1, 13.45

Songs of Praise remembers Wilfred Owen, one of the greatest war poets in the English language. He was killed in action during one of the very last battles of the war 100 years ago on 4 November 1918. His powerful words capturing the horrors and, as he saw it, the futility of war, are discussed outside the house where he lived as a child in Birkenhead, with Frank Field, who has been MP for the North West town for the last 40 years. Locally born actress Dame Patricia Routledge reads one of her favourite Wilfred Owen poems and joins the congregation in hymns from Christ Church in Birkenhead, where Wilfred Owen attended services as a boy. Also in the programme, we meet the winner of Prince William’s national poetry competition for a new work inspired by the poets of the Great War. And another Wilfred Owen enthusiast, Martin Impey, reveals his illustrations depicting the tragedy of war.

New Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs

School

Tuesday 6th November, BBC2, 21.00

School follows the closely connected experiences of pupils, teachers, parents and school leaders across an academic year, in all their complexity. It’s a co-production with The Open University. More public money is being spent on education than ever before, but financial pressures and the number of teachers quitting their profession continue to rise. This series unpicks the connections between key decisions and their human impact, right across the system. At stake is the future of Britain’s next generation. What should we expect of our teachers, our children and ourselves? School is set in three secondary schools: Marlwood, The Castle, and Mangotsfield. Together they form part of Castle School Education Trust (CSET), a large Multi-Academy Trust* in South Gloucestershire, where their budgets and fortunes are intertwined.
Each of the head teachers answers to the Trust CEO, William Roberts, who retrained to be a teacher after starting his career at a multinational corporation. It’s a new academic year and cuts begin to bite at The Castle, the largest and most successful school in the Trust. Sixteen year-old Chloe is struggling to deal with the pressure of her forthcoming GCSEs. She walks out of one of her mock exams after suffering an anxiety attack. Chloe wants to be a forensic scientist but must now overcome her fears as the real exams approach. Twelve year-old Chelsea, one of the brightest students in her year group, is struggling to settle into her first year of secondary school. When she deliberately sets off a fire alarm and the entire school has to be evacuated, Head teacher Angie Browne (pictured) sees it as a cry for help from a talented child trying to fit in, and decides to intervene personally. Angie, newly appointed as interim head, is struggling to maintain the school’s high standards whilst overseeing significant budget reductions. Within 18 months the Trust’s cash reserves will be exhausted. Angie must break the news to her colleagues that they face pay cuts of up to £6,000. *Two thirds of all secondary state schools in England have Academy status. Academies are funded and managed independently of Local Education Authorities and are increasingly grouping together to form Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs), each managed by a single board of directors and a CEO. The number of MATs in England has tripled in the past five years.

Wednesday 7th November, ITV1, 20.00

In episode two Paul meets a dentally challenged Shih Tzu looking for a companion, a Yorkshire terrier riddled with fleas and he takes some dogs to spread some cheer in a retirement home. First Paul meets a badly injured Saluki who was found abandoned at the side of the road. Feeling sad at the sight of him, Paul says: “It’s rotten. There’s always so much I want to say when I see a dog in this condition, but I can’t on camera. But you know what I’m thinking at home. How can you let a dog get in this state? It’s not fair.” The vets examine him and discover he may have been attacked by a big dog and will need to stay with them for at least a few weeks. After naming him Chester, the staff operate on him to fix some of his wounds, including a massive hole in his shoulder. Afterwards Paul attempts to help him on the road to recovery by taking him on his first walk since he arrived at Battersea, but Chester is very nervous and wants to go back inside. Later, Paul pets Chester in his kennel before trying another walk with him. As he grows in confidence, Paul takes him to a retirement home as part of a dog therapy session. If Chester is brave enough, maybe he will be ready to be rehomed? Also in the programme, Paul meets an abandoned Yorkshire terrier puppy who is covered in fleas. Paul falls in love with the pup, who staff name Summer, and goes with her for her first bath. A medicated shampoo gets rid of her fleas and gives the pup a new lease of life, ready for Paul to lend a hand with her first grooming session. Next Paul takes elderly Shih Tzu, Cookie, for a walk to the shops to find a toy soft enough for his toothless mouth. Paul says: “Well that was a success, all we need now is to find him a home. He’s a lovely old dog, he doesn’t ask for much. He’s getting on a bit but he’s full of beans.” A couple visit Battersea looking for an older dog to take home – will Cookie be going with them?

The Lakes With Paul Rose BBC2, 20.30

www.canarianweekly.com 2nd November - 8th November 2018

In the final episode, adventurer and presenter Paul Rose explores Eskdale. The Lake District National Park might get 18 million visitors a year, but relatively few make it as far as Eskdale in the Western Lakes. Paul journeys from sea level to the highest point in England, as he climbs Scafell Pike. On the way he looks at how people make a living in this remote corner of the Lake District. He gets up close and personal with a vulture from the bird of prey centre at Muncaster Castle, and helps get the steam trains ready for action on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. He also takes a look at how the Outward Bound movement has been bringing young people from the cities to the fells since the Second World War. Finally, Paul gets his hands well and truly dirty at Eskdale Show - including taking a few tumbles during a spot of Cumberland Wrestling with the locals.

The Antiques Roadshow received hundreds of responses to their appeal for stories and objects to mark the end of the Great War and its aftermath. This special episode, filmed at the Etaples Military Cemetery in France, presents a selection of the most emotive and poignant items chosen by the team. From cherished mementoes of sacrifice and remembrance to surprising objects that offer an insight into care for the wounded, the episode reveals how the impact of World War One was felt across the world and by all sections of society. Fiona Bruce and the team are profoundly moved by items including two poppies picked in the ruins of Ypres in 1915, a humble tray made by a soldier blinded by mustard gas and an extraordinary document that silenced the guns and brought the First World War to an end. Militaria specialist Mark Smith hears the story of Nabi Ahmad Sidiqi, an Indian Army surgeon, while Siobhan Tyrrell finds out about Lady Dorothie Feilding, a volunteer nurse and ambulance driver who became the first woman to earn the Military Medal for bravery. Hilary Kay also hears the remarkable story of a young musician who purchased a second-hand violin signed and dated ‘1915’ and his quest to find out what happened to the man who made it - leading to an emotional meeting with a long lost ancestor.

Most coalmines to shut, in a deal worth 250m euros! SPAIN will shut down most of its coalmines by the end of the year, following a deal between government and unions, in which 250m euros will be invested in mining regions over the next decade. Pedro Sánchez’s new left-wing Government has moved quickly on environmental policy, abolishing a controversial “sunshine tax” on the solar industry, and an announcement next month about the launch of Spain’s long-delayed, nationalclimate plan. The mining deal mixes early retirement schemes for miners over 48, with environmental, restoration work in pit communities, along with re-skilling schemes for cutting-edge, green industries. Ecological Transition Minister Teresa Ribera

said: “With this agreement, we have solved the first urgent task we had on the table when we came to government. Our aim has been to leave no one behind. “We also want to go further because we want to innovate. That is why we offer the drawing up of ‘Just Transition’ contracts, with the aim of helping the regions to consolidate the employment of the future.” More than 1,000 miners and sub-contractors will lose their jobs when 10 pits close

by the end of the year. Nearly all of the sites were uneconomic concerns, which the European commission had allowed Spain to keep open, temporarily, with a 2.1bneuro, state-aid plan. Montserrat Mir, the Spanish Confederal Secretary for the European Trades Union Congress, said the “just transition” model could be applied elsewhere. “Spain can export this deal as an example of good practice,” she said.

“We have shown that it’s possible to follow the Paris agreement without damage [to people’s livelihoods]. “We don’t need to choose between a job and protecting the environment. It is possible to have both.” About 600 workers in Spain’s northern mining regions, comprising Asturias, Aragón, and Castilla y León, will benefit from social aid under the scheme, while about 60% of the miners can opt for early retirement.

Laura Martin-Murillo, a government negotiator, described the pact as “the end of a process of restructuring for many communities, that has been going on for decades. It had to be done sensitively to bring hope to places that, sometimes, have lost faith that it could work. “A lot of young people abandoned these areas, and they experienced a change in identity. We need a fossilfuel, non-proliferation treaty, and we need it now. “Negotiations with the last few hundred miners, employed in publicly-owned mines, will begin now,” she added. “We will look at the same transition plans for these workers.” Spain’s coal industry employed more than 100,000 miners in the 1960s, but its energy dominance was eroded by cheap imports, and increasing awareness of the industry’s environmental, health and climate costs. In fact, national coal provides just 2.3% of Spain’s electricity nowadays.

Waterspout destroyer as island’s power is cut off A WATERSPOUT on the island of Menorca left a trail of destruction last Sunday, along with 38,000 residents without electricity. Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Minister of Ecological Transition, confirmed that, around 10am, there was damage to numerous electricity infrastructures, telephone cables and homes. Island areas particularly affected by the waterspout and downpours were in the municipalities of Ciutadella, Alaior, es Migjorn, es Mercadal and a large part of Mahón. Ms Ribera took to social media, pledging that a plan for the “quick

recovery of the electricity service” was underway. She added that “the Government and the Ministry itself were co-ordinating responses”. Spanish media reported on Monday that, after a night without power, 25 new generators were being installed that morning on the Balearic Island. More generators were expected to arrive the following day, as the operation to restore power to thousands of residents continued. Power was scheduled to be restored to all areas of Menorca by the end of Tuesday, weather and sea conditions permitting. And those in affected areas have been advised to follow news updates closely, until normal services on the island can resume.

Scientists put finger on iceberg rectangle

A GIGANTIC, monolith iceberg was spotted by NASA scientists, as they were being flown over Antarctica during an airborne survey. The rectangular berg was sighted off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, near the Larsen C ice shelf. The NASA experts, who believe it might have broken off the shelf, recently, say the sharp angles and flat surfaces are evidence that it was a recent break. The strange, angular shape is known as a “tabular” iceberg, and,

said the space agency: “Its sharp angles and flat surface indicate that it probably calved off from the ice shelf.” NASA scientist Kelly Brunt, who estimated the iceberg to be about a mile wide, told LiveScience: “Tabular icebergs are rather like fingernails that crack off, giving them sharp edges. “What makes this one a bit unusual is that it looks almost like a square.” The image was taken during an IceBridge flight, which is an airborne survey of the planet’s polar ice. It gives a 3D view of the ice, forming the Arctic and Antarctic, and provides vital information of how it changes over time.

Don't call me ginger!

By Val Sainsbury N AT U R A L - B O R N redheads have a biology unlike any other. It's the rarest hair colour in the world, and with it comes a unique set of health consequences. Thanks to a single genetic mutation, and a few other mysterious causes, redheads have different pain tolerances, sexual encounters, and risks for disease than any other person with a different hair colour. It was only in 2000 that scientists identified the gene responsible for red hair. We all have this gene, but, sometimes, the gene mutates, causing the characteristic reddish hue, along with pale skin and light eyes. Because this gene was only discovered 15 years ago, researchers don't know the exact amount of people with

red hair, throughout the world. Current estimates put that number between 1-2% of the global population. There are several health anomalies of redheads, including: More sensitive to painkillers The same gene mutation, that turns the hair red, also releases a hormone in the brain that has the ability to mimic endorphins. Endorphins have several functions, but one of their primary roles is to provide pain relief. This ultimately affects how the body receives pain signals from the brain, causing a heightened sensitivity to prescription, opioid painkillers. As a result, redheads can take smaller doses of these drugs, to reach the same level of pain tolerance as others. Temperature changes The same mutation that makes people's hair red is also what causes them to be more sensitive to temperature changes, even slight ones. They feel hot and cold temperature changes faster, and with greater intensity, than those with other hair colours. So, if you're a brunette standing outside complaining about the cold, your redheaded best friend next to you is

probably worse off. More anaesthesia needed Redheads need 20% more anesthesia than their darkheaded counterparts. Because the mutated gene belongs to the same family that plays a role in pain, the mutation causes redheads to be more sensitive to it. The changed gene's role in the brain may affect the activity of endorphins, one of the body’s natural painkillers. New research reveals that, as a reult of this, redheads are twice as likely to avoid going to the dentist as people with other hair colours. If they're not given enough Novocaine, they're in more pain. Vitamin D Northern European countries have the highest concentrations of redheads, and there's a reason for that. When humans migrated out

of Africa, tens of thousands of years ago, their skin lightened, over time, because they were exposed to less sun. People with darker skin developed it to block some of the sun's harmful UV rays, but, in the process, also lost the ability to naturally produce high levels of Vitamin D. On the other hand, people with red hair, who don't get much sun, were able to adapt, and their bodies learned to efficiently generate the Vitamin D their bodies needed. Risk for certain diseases Unfortunately, redheads are nearly twice as likely to develop Parkinson's disease when compared with those with darker hair. A 2009 study, published in the Annals of Neurology, looked at more than 130,000 people over 16 years, and found that those with red hair had

a risk unlike those with dark hair. They're still not entirely sure why. Redheads are also at an increased risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. When a redhead's skin is exposed to ultraviolet rays, pigment-producing cells grow quickly, eventually developing into cancer. Going grey Redheads' hair initially turns to light copper, then blond, and finally white, completely skipping the grey-hair stage. They also tend to retain their pigment longer, and typically have thicker hair than other people. Red hair is the most difficult shade to dye and maintain, making it the hardest hair colour to fake. More sex When a redhead walks into a room, there's a good chance they'll be noticed, giving them, especially women, a competitive advantage in the mating game, according to research. Colour psychologists say that red provokes arousal more than any other shade, and it's an indicator of youth and fertility. So, it makes sense to align redheads with sex. People also tend to be attracted to things that are rare, which could also increase redheads' allure!

Dress those windows! ABOUT a decade ago, the interiordesign fashion was to match everything in the bedroom, to make it look very “designed”.

This included the bedspreads, curtains, and, quite often, a set of toning plastic flowers, as well. Apologies to anyone who still has these items in their property! Of course, now things are completely different, and less is definitely considered more; more stylish, more appealing and less busy! Quite often, the bedroom curtains will have to fit a patio door. They make a big impression on your overall design scheme, so it’s important to get them right. Whether you are going for

curtains, eyelet or gathered, or roller or vertical blinds, having them made to fit the window properly will ensure that they look the part, and do the job you need them for. Buying ready-made window dressings may be cheaper, but they will never look good, in the same way. The style of your window dressings will also depend on your circumstances. For example, if you have young children, or rent your property out to people who do, keep away from any type of blinds that go up and down to open and close, such as roller blinds. They will get pushed to one side, as people go in and out of the doors, and will soon break. From a safety perspective, also think about trailing cords that could be dangerous for young children. Vertical blinds, with multiple slats that run from top to bottom, can be moved to one side, leaving the doorway free. They can also be angled to keep the sun out of the room or off the TV screen, and to give you

privacy without losing all the light. Alternatively, Roman blinds, made from a lovely fabric to match your bedspread, will decorate your bedroom windows in a softer way. If you prefer curtains to blinds, you can choose the eyelet variety, where the curtain pole slots through rings sewn into the curtains. This method uses less material because the curtains aren’t gathered, but the making of them is more expensive and needs to be finished perfectly,

so there often isn’t much difference between them and gathered drapes. Gathered curtains run on rings over a curtain pole, or on a track with small hooks. They use more material, and give a more gathered and fussy look, but are cheaper to make. Nets, or voiles as they are now called, introduce a lovely, colonial element to your decorating scheme, but they won’t keep the sun out or give you any privacy at night, so might need to be paired with blinds, or

additional curtains. Sunblock curtains are another tool that you might find useful, to keep the bedroom cool on hot days, or make it dark on those long, summer evenings. Fortunately, times have moved on from plastic suncurtains (although they did a good job), and you can now get fabric, with a layer in the middle, to provide the necessary blocking qualities, but in a wide range of colours. To give a good impression, your window dressings should be fitted half-way between the top of the window and the ceiling, and have enough overlap at the sides to keep the light out. This arrangement is easy on the eye, and looks in proportion. This is when you will really be able to see whether you have chosen made-to-measure curtains, or made do with readymade! All items are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will come to your property and give you a free, no-obligation quote, in the comfort of your own home.

Extra Virgin olive oil not always that extra! NEW research by a Spanish consumer association has reignited the debate over whether olive oil is being labelled as “Extra Virgin” incorrectly. According to the latest report by the Consumers’ and Users’ Organisation (OCU), many of the topselling olive-oil brands in Spanish supermarkets and superstores are not Extra Virgin, despite their labels’ description. The group’s researchers checked out 41 products, testing their flavour as well as other factors, and found that 20 did not deserve to

be labelled Extra Virgin, but, instead, belonged to the lesser category of Virgin. The olive-oil industry has dismissed the results, arguing that there were irregularities in the analysis, and that its products comply with all regulations that authorise the use of the tag. Olive oils are classified according to a European Union regulation, which divides products into Extra Virgin, Virgin, Olive and Olive-Pomace. A product must meet certain, physical and chemical parameters to be classified as Extra Virgin, and it must also comply with sensory standards, which are measured through an extremely-strict taste test.

In the OCU study, 21 of the 40 analysed products failed this sensory test, which is compulsory in Europe. But the industry argues that the taste test is too subjective, and cannot be trusted. “No physico-chemical problems have been detected, and the only problem was in the taste test, which is an unreliable method,” said Primitivo Fernández, director of the National

Association of Edible Oils Bottlers and Refiners (Anierac). Fernández added that the industry had been trying for a long time to design an “electronic nose”, to reduce the subjective element of the test, and provide more reliable results. “Oil is the only food product in the world that is defined using a tasting, and the differences in criteria cause a problem because of the

lack of legal security,” he said. Products receiving the best score in the sensory test were Oleoestepa’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil, that comes in a one-litre plastic bottle (which has received top marks in four of the five studies carried out by OCU since 2000), Carrefour’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil, in a one-litre plastic bottle, and Hacendado Gran Selección Cooperativam, in a 750-millilitre glass bottle. Labels owned by supermarket chains, such as the French group Auchan, also made the list, while others, like Hojiblanca’s El Nuestro one-litre plastic bottle, were wrongly labelled as Extra Virgin, according to the OCU report.

Released from an awful life

WE love happy endings, here at the refuge. This gorgeous dog was rescued from her life on a short chain, with no love or care. After recuperation, having received veterinary treatment and good food, she's been a very lucky dog. The legal length of time has passed, and she has been rehomed with a lovely family in Germany. We will never understand why people chain their dogs up, or leave then on small balconies, for most of their lives. We can never stress enough the importance of adopting, not buying. Our refuge is full of 230 gorgeous dogs, each looking for that special someone, to give him or her a home. Please do come and visit us, during

opening hours, if you are interested. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. Helping Hands

So many Helping Hands help raise a mighty total

SUPPORTERS of the Helping Hands children’s charity enjoyed a fabulous Halloween afternoon at Palms Sports Bar in Torviscas, last Saturday.

Liz Montague, who runs the charity, said: “We have had an absolute blast! There was a fantastic atmosphere, with great music, dancing witches, and face-painting by Laura Steele.” There was also a fancy-dress competition, plus a mega raffle and an auction, staged by Tim Dowd, who was also a performing magician. Thanks go to helpers Janet and Anne, plus Talia and Amaya, for looking after Sharon Valentine’s sweet treats, as well as the cake delights made by the Darcy

Mather and Rachel Lee. Kevin performed a smashing job as compere, and the total sum raised for the Helping Hands Christmas Appeal was 1,250 euros. “We are so happy and grateful to each and everyone who donated gifts, and actually came to the Palms to support our event,” said Liz. But that wasn’t the end of the day because Shahid Butt, who owns Direct Telecom, together with Sugar Reef’s Andy Swallow, added a further 1,250 euros to bring the Christmas Appeal total up to a whopping 2,500 euros. Liz added: “Thanks to them, and also to Kirsty and Mark, along with all the staff and Mr BBQ, for a brilliant afternoon at an equallybrilliant venue. We can’t wait to visit you again next year!”

CD Tenerife

Tenerife turn round an incredible match SATURDAY night turned out all right, after a gutsy performance by Tenerife, who overcame a two-goal deficit, to secure an unlikely victory in the final minutes of a thrilling clash with the 2nd-placed Madrid team. Before the start, everyone had written off Tenerife, thinking it was a foregone conclusion that this would be defeat No.4 of the season, for coach Oltra’s men. And when the game began, it seemed that this was the case as Alcorón took the lead… after 20 seconds! Casadesús played a long ball past Alberto into the box, and Dani came out to collect it, easily. Unfortunately, the usually-reliable keeper fumbled it. He then paused, unsure of whether to drop on it, or let Camille clear it. In the confusion, he knocked the ball straight into the path of Marco Sangalli, who tapped it into an open goal. Things went from bad to worse just four minutes later, when Alcorón doubled their lead. If the first goal was fortuitous, their second one was class. Juan Muñoz received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box, took it past Alberto, and rocketed a left-foot shot into the bottom corner of the goal. So, 2-0 to Alcorón, with less than five minutes on the clock, and it looked as though was going to be a long evening for Tenerife and the home fans. The rest of the first half was pretty uneventful, as the home side steadied the ship at the back, and had a couple of good chances, which could have quite easily levelled the game. A good shot from Joao on 42 minutes forced an equally-good save from Alcorón keeper Dani Jiménez, and a powerful header from an Alberto corner left the keeper floundering, only for the ball to hit the bar. Oltra made a change in the second half, bringing

CD Tenerife 3 AD Alcorón 2

on Malbasic, who found a breakthrough for Tenerife in the 57th minute with a lovely solo effort. A good build-up enabled him to receive the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box, turn, and beat two defenders, before slotting it under the keeper for a well-

deserved home goal. 2-1 to Alcorón. But they missed other chances, until, with five minutes remaining, Alcorón conceded a poor free-kick, some 25 yards out. The five-man wall was in place, but that didn’t stop Luis Milla’s moment of brilliance. Beckham-

esque, he stepped up and curled it round the wall and past a flying Jimenéz, who was left helpless. It was a world-class strike, making it 2-2 and sending home fans crazy. If the first five minutes of the match were unpredictable, so were the last five!

Malbasic found himself in front of the Alcorón goal, with no one challenging him, so he went on a diagonal run with the ball, towards the right-hand corner of the six-yard box. With just the keeper to beat, he shot, but Jiménez got his hand to it and looked to push it over the bar. But the ball actually looped up in the air and fell into the path of Naranjo, at the far post. The Alcorón defence all stopped, claiming offside, allowing Naranjo to head home an unlikely winner, from under a yard out. The final whistle sparked a mammoth celebration for Tenerife players and fans, at the end of an incredible match. It was worthy win for Tenerife, who battled until the end, so was this the turning point we’ve all wanted to see? Let’s hope so, because the next match tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm, is against a Numancia team, just one point and a couple of places above Tenerife in the table.

Nadal scores with a Five-star Hamilton, second ace academy and more to come! WORLD No.1 tennis star Rafael Nadal has celebrated the second anniversary of his sports academy in Mallorca, by opening another one! The “Rafa Nadal Academy by Movístar” started life in his native town of Manacor, and trains up young talents, with the aid of a technical team of coaches. They are led by Rafa’s uncle and former trainer, Toni Nadal, using the same techniques as those which catapulted Rafa to stardom, and have kept him there for years. Along with sports coaching, future tennis prodigies are trained to be all-rounders and upstanding members of the community, through their education at the American International School of Mallorca. It aims to instil in them such values such as effort, patience, respect, humility, tolerance, integrity, discipline, order and commitment.

Students have included Rosa Vicens, Spanish Junior Champion in singles and doubles, and ATP world No.79 Jaume Munar. Now, two years on, another branch of the sports school is about to open on the Costa Mujeres area of eastern México, just north of the Cancún holiday hotspot. Nadal’s new Tennis Centre forms part of the complexes run by the TRS Coral Hotel and TRS Grand Palladium Costa Mujeres Resort & Spa. It will be ready to take in pupils any time now, and will include year-round residents, as well as holiday-makers. The Costa Mujeres academy, employing the same techniques as the Manacor branch, is ideal for tourists to hone their skills, or to learn from scratch as a complementary activity. They can even to take a “tennis holiday” in the Caribbean sun, where the main focus is their game.

LEWIS Hamilton clinched his fifth F1 World Championship on Sunday, putting himself joint-second behind Michael Schumacher, who is the most successful driver of all time, with seven titles to his credit. The 33-year-old Briton, who needed to finish seventh in the Mexican Grand Prix to claim the title, came a comfortable fourth, to become only the third man in F1 history to win five world titles. The Mercedes star matches the haul of his hero, Juan Manuel Fangio, an Argentine legend, and is two titles behind Schumacher. A dominant Max Verstappen won the race, with German Sebastian Vettel second and his Ferrari partner Kimi Raikkonen third, but the day belonged to Hamilton, who battled tyre problems throughout. But though he failed to make the podium, he did more than

enough to seal the biggest achievement of his illustrious career, which still has many miles to travel. At the end of the race, jubilant Hamilton pushed his car through a series of celebratory “doughnut” spins in the track’s stadium section, before waving to the capacity 135,000 crowd. Nico Rosberg, who denied Lewis Hamilton the 2016 world title, then retired from the sport, posted a video on social media praising his former team-mate, saying: “Congrats to the 5th title, Lewis! Your Fangio style is very impressive.” Hamilton said: “It is a very strange feeling right now. This was won and through a lot of hard work, through a

lot of races. I am so grateful for all the hard work… for everyone who has been a part of it. “To complete this, when Fangio has done it with Mercedes, is an incredible moment.” But Hamilton admitted: “It was a horrible race. I got a great start and was working my way up, and I really don’t know what happened after that. I was just trying to hold on and bring the car home.” Sporting Vettel, not always the closest of pals with his rival, broke off from a postrace interview to congratulate Hamilton, embracing him at the conclusion of a season’s titanic battle. The Ferrari driver said: “Well deserved. Congrats to him and his team. They did a superb job all year, and we need to stand here and accept that. We would have loved to hang in there a bit longer, but that wasn’t the case.”
