Ceasefire, after four bloody years of war

This year, especially, is the most important event in modern times, because it marks the centenary. And, as ever, there are services across the South of the island, and in the North. Tenerife’s main service, which begins at 10.30am, takes place, as usual, at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio, honouring the 11th hour of the l1th day of the 11th month, exactly 100 years ago on that date, and at that time, when an Armistice was declared. That meant a ceasefire after four, bloody years. Millions of lives had been lost on both sides, but the allies were at least able to celebrate victory over Germany in World War 1. And, with previous Silencio occasions attracting over 300 people, it is advisable to be there at 10am, for the 10.30am start to this
centenary service. You are all welcome to enjoy this extremely special day, and, following the service, you are invited to join the organisers at The Albatros, Costa del Silencio, for an afternoon of entertainment with a BBQ and raffle, all proceeds being donated to the Poppy Appeal. The British Embassy in Madrid, and Consulates across Spain, will mark the Armistice centenary by taking part in solemn acts of remembrance, and also by giving thanks for the end of the war, and for peace, as well as for all those who returned to their families. This year, the British and German Governments are promoting a special programme of bell-ringing, as a symbolic way of giving thanks for the end of war, a century after the guns fell silent on the Western Front, and remembering the importance of peace.
In London, President FrankWalter Steinmeier will lay a wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of the German people, in a historic act of reconciliation. It will be the first time a German leader has laid a wreath at the ceremony. The act really does mark the significance of the centenary, and bells will be rung at many churches in Spain. The bilateral collaboration is also being marked in other ways, because Simon Manley, Britain’s Ambassador to Spain, along with German Ambassador Wolfgang Dold, will give readings at the Remembrance Day service at Madrid’s St George’s Church. Mr Manley will also attend an event at the German Ambassador’s residence, with the historian Dr Robert-Benjamin Gerwarth, entitled “Cien

ADEJE Environment Councillor Esther Rivero is reminding the public that, at this time of year, a large number of young birds are taking their first flight over the sea. Many of the Cory’s Shearwater chicks, which become disoriented, can fly off their path towards the sea and fall to earth. It is an annual campaign, and the 2018 venture is dated for this time of the month, because the new moon affects the flights of the chicks. Councillor Rivero said: “Adeje has a large Cory’s Shearwater population, given the number of ravines and mountains in the borough. In fact, it is one of the better places for their observation and conservation.” There is a procedure to follow if you find a young Cory’s Shearwater lost or injured: simply call 112 or

German Ambassador Wolfgang Dold said: “One hundred years ago, after unspeakable suffering on both sides of the trenches, the guns fell silent. But Europe still had a long way to go towards an era of lasting peace and democracy. “It took great courage to speak of reconciliation, only a few short years after the devastation of the First World War, and the horrors of the Second World War. “Now, as we commemorate, jointly, the fallen, we also stand up to those who, again, seek to open up divides among our peoples. It is up to us to keep up this formidable legacy of peace.”
Wear your poppy with pride THE Royal British Legion, a one-off organisation, has been asking for your help in raising funds for its annual Poppy Appeal for the past few weeks. It runs itself, and the monies raised help to support ex-Service personnel in need of assistance. It may mean a visit, just to talk, or a small repair that cannot be completed by the person, or something larger, like remodelling a home for a disabled person. All these people, their families and/or
dependants, are the ones assisted by The Royal British Legion. Through the generosity of South Tenerife people, the 2017 Poppy Appeal raised 11,104.95 euros, and officials are hoping for more, in this special year. There are still a few days to go, so please ensure your donation to this year’s Poppy Appeal goes into one of our genuine collecting boxes. Please give generously and wear your poppy with pride, so The Royal British Legion can continue its work, helping those exservice personnel and their dependants in need, including those here in the Canary Islands.
A blazing nuisance! 922 445 777 (9am-11pm) and tell them where exactly the bird is. The second number puts you through to Centro de Recuperación de Fauna Silvestre, who will send one someone trained in dealing with these lost chicks. If you have to pick up the bird before the authorities arrive (it is not advised), do so with extreme caution because their beaks are sharp and strong, so use gloves and a towel. Once you get hold of the bird, place it in a box with
air holes and keep it in a safe, quiet place. Do not constrict the bird’s wings, and don’t give it food or liquid. Given Adeje’s high Shearwater population, said the Councillor, this year’s campaign can also be seen as a good tool to teach the local population more about this species, which also live in the borough. She added: “We can learn to know, admire, value and care for these ‘Adeje birds’, which play an essential part in our environmental balance.”
RESIDENTS noticed a car in flames on Sunday, parked up in Calle Eladio Roca Salazar, which is normally a busy road in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz. One witness believed it was torched intentionally. But, fortunately, there were no casualties, and the flames were extinguished as soon as the fire-fighters arrived. Police are now investigating how and why the blaze occurred.

Walk for life funds pouring in already THIS year’s Walk for Life, in aid of breast cancer, will be held on 16th December, and fund-raising is already taking place all over the island. The Carrera por la Vida/Walk for Life Foundation was set up by Brigitte Gypen, who is always grateful when people go out of their way to promote the event and collect donations. Brigitte, a tireless worker for the cause said: “We are particularly delighted to be able to announce that, in recent weeks, the Fundación CLC World has donated over 10,000 euros to our cause.” She added: “The money was raised by staff and guests taking part in special activities at three CLC World tourist resorts, here in South Tenerife. And the staff at these resorts
are the kind of people who are willing, and more than happy, to push the boat out for a good cause. “They held bingo games, lucky-dips, face-painting, cake sales, and a fancy-
dress race, with the workers all in pink, so they were also raising awareness about breast cancer, which is an integral part of our work, all year around.” There was also a bouncy
castle for youngsters at the resorts, and a sangria demo for the older ones! Lots of companies donated prizes for raffles, and CLC World offered a seven-night accommodation prize in
Tenerife, Malaga or Turkey. Overall, the day raised 5,200 euros, and the Foundation had agreed to match the sum, euro for euro, up to 5,000 euros, so the final sum was 10,200 euros. TENERIFE Water Council has opened an investigation into a company which caused the TF-1 to come to a complete standstill last Friday afternoon, during a five-hour period, including the rush-hour, because of a lorry’s sewage spillage. It emerged, the next morning, during a localradio chat-show, that the lorry driver poured out its contents, without authorisation from the South Tenerife sewage treatment plant. That then caused an overflow on to the TF-1 Southbound lane, in the Las Americas area.
Insular Water Councillor Manuel Martínez, who was on the chat-show, said that although the smell was unbearable, there was no proof that the spillage had reached the coast. He also said the company responsible for the chaos was dedicated to cleaning wells. But a statement from Tenerife’s Water Council says that what occurred was complete negligence from the private-sector company, which is why the investigation has been opened, to make sure the correct penalties can be placed.

Architects bowled over by the Adeje Plaza de España
ADEJE’S Plaza de España has scooped top prize in the Canarian ‘Manuel de Oráa y Arcocha 20082017 architecture awards, in the landscape and publicspace category.
The prize is for the plaza’s projection as a reference point, in both modernity and the preservation of local heritage. It is awarded by the Official School of Architecture of Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, and is dedicated to recognising work in creating spaces that respect and emphasise the worth of local heritage and natural resources. The Plaza de España does just that, flanked by the Convento de San Francisco on one side, the Santa Úrsula Martir church on the other, and with the awe-inspiring Barranco del Infierno as a backdrop. Each one is a recognised point of cultural and natural interest, with the Plaza designed to enhance each
feature. The renovation and redesign of the Plaza de España was the work of Tenerife architect Fernando Martín Menis (Estudio Menis Arquitectos), who is also responsible for the Magma & Congresos building. These two structures have become focus points in
the borough for different groups and events, as well as viewpoints in their own right. The Plaza de España is 1,182sq/m with a 446sq/m stage space and a garden zone. Work on the renovation and redesign was carried out in 2009 and 2010, financed by the
Cops to have last word on mobiles!
TRAFFIC police on mainland Spain, and the Canaries, are preparing to launch a new weapon in the war on motorists who use their mobile phones while driving. Unmarked vans and HGVs, specially-equipped with front and side cameras, are already being trialled on roads in Galicia and Castilla y León, as the road-traffic authority DGT prepares to crack down against motorists on mobiles. Officers will use the height of their vehicles, similar to those already in use on Britain’s roads, to peer down into vehicles to catch
offenders talking on their mobiles, messaging, reading or writing while driving. Over 4,000 people have been caught during the two-year period in which the operation has been running in the UK. It has proved a vital tool in targeting drivers who use mobile phones illegally, and the authorities are looking to introduce a similar system here in Spain. The initiative has not been altogether well-received on the streets, naturally, but the DGT is determined to tackle, and, ultimately, eradicate the use of mobile phones by drivers, because it is now acknowledged as the distraction which causes most traffic fatalities.

Council flat-out to halt road racers
GRAN Canaria’s Telde Council has increased its camera surveillance against underground, car-racing competitions, which are held regularly on various roads across the municipality. The use of speed radars has been intensified because of these races, and police controls, along with surveillance cameras, have also increased in the area. The authorities are going flat-out to banish these popular, underground races. If caught, the drivers face serious consequences, as well as a fine of up to 500 euros, and they could have six points deducted from their driving licences. Although the races are not yet considered illegal, authorities can charge these chancers with dangerous driving, as well as crimes against the road, and, of course, public safety. So far, Telde’s Local Police have charged nine people with reckless driving, the majority being nabbed while the races were taking place at a popular shopping centre’s car park.

NEWS IN BRIEF Teenager ‘molested’ old ladies
THE police force of Catalonia, Mossos d’Esquadra, have arrested a 16-year-old youth, believed to have assaulted and molested six elderly women, around 80, in Olot, Girona. Officers reported that a spate of incidents had occurred between 7th August and 10th October, in the city’s dark corners and alleys. Over the two-month span, the force received complaints from the six pensioners, who each described the attacker as a young man. And each woman picked similar, distinctive, physical characteristics about the attacker. The victims all claimed to have been touched, and each one said the teenager had taken advantage of secluded places to expose himself, sexually. After an investigation by officers, based on the victims’ accounts, a suspect was arrested last Friday evening. Police said the young man, who had no connection to any of the women, had since been released, pending the summons of Girona’s Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office.
TV channel cheats nabbed
THREE British expatriates have been arrested in Formentera del Segura, accused of forming an illegal television network. It led to the fraudulent distribution of subscription channels to over 500 foreign customers. The trio, aged 30, 46 and 63, were detained for crimes against public finance, social security, money-laundering and belonging to a criminal group. The illegal network is said to have earned the trio more than 450,000 euros, free of taxes and payments to the public treasury. The payments are believed to have been laundered through bank movements, always below 3,000 euros, so they couldn’t be detected by the bank’s auditors. Guardia Civil officials said the losses to TV payment platforms added up to around 10,000-15,000 euros per month. All three men, who appeared in court, have been released on police bail.
Son’s horrific discovery
A HUNTER died last Thursday after losing his footing while attempting to explore the Fasnia ravine, near the town of Candelaria. The man was discovered by his son, who, after searching around the ravine, noticed his father’s body at the bottom of an extremely difficult area. The hunter was found between several pine trees, at the bottom of the Fasnia volcano, situated around 2,000 metres above sea-level. After finding his father, the son contacted the emergency services, which dispatched ambulances and the fire service, as well as the emergency helicopter, to recover the body before nightfall. Guardia Civil officers also added their assistance.

Major new telescope’s unveiled in La Palma
A MAJOR new telescope has been added to the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA-North), at La Palma’s Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. It was unveiled by Pedro Duque, the Spanish Government’s Science Minister, and the LST-1 telescope is the first of four, making up the core nucleus of this La Palma’s spaceobservation infrastructure, which will, eventually, comprise 19 telescopes in all. Alongside the four LST1 telescopes (23 metres in diameter), another 15 MSTs (Medium-Sized Telescopes), which are 12m in diameter, will be also built. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is an ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures) terrestrial, astrono-
my infrastructure, for studying the universe in the extremely high-energy range. This initiative forms part of the agreement between the IAC and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR) at the University of Tokyo. The new LST-1 comprises a carbon fibre and steel tubular structure, measuring 45 metres in height and weighing approximately 100 tonnes. It is also extremely agile, capable of repositioning itself in 20 seconds to capture signals from gamma ray bursts. These LST telescopes are the most important instruments for the CTANorth because they are the most sensitive. They have been designed, especially, to study extragalactic objects, capable of detecting the lowest-energy emissions. Once this new telescope has been tested satisfactorily, it will be recognised as part of the CTA and will, officially,
become the first telescope in the array. This will also provide the definitive push towards building and commissioning the three remaining LST telescopes in La Palma, as well as the other four, to be built at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and in El Paranal (Chile). At the opening ceremony, Pedro Duque highlighted the advanced level of astrophysics in Spain, as well as support from the Government, and other authorities, for this and other projects that can be developed, successfully, in the Canaries. The ceremony was attended by over 200 guests, comprising representatives from the research centres and universities making up the CTA Consortium, along with members from userinstitutions of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (ORM), and other authorities.
Renter’s luxury fraud not quite slick enough NATIONAL Police have arrested a 47-year-old man, charged with renting out luxury apartments, fraudulently, in Adeje. The man, who already has a police record, advertised a luxury apartment for rent on an internet rental site, where interested people could contact him directly.
Before long, contracts were produced for two people, in two different apartments, and payments were made by both parties in 2017. The first person delivered his anticipated 7,000-euro deposit, while the second person put down 10,500 euros. Cops began investigating the case, once the facts were reported by the victims last year. The probe continued until the police accumulated
enough evidence to make the arrest, yet the man was unaccounted for during the whole investigation, But once the police report had been completed, the suspect was remanded to the acting Court of Instruction of Guardia de Arona. The completed police reports, along with the detainee, will be presented before a judge at the Arona courts, in the near future.

Smart Data, and its tourism revolution SMART Data was the central theme at the recent XIX International Tourism Forum, held in Benidorm, which attracted a number of Spanish mayors, including Adeje’s Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. Also present were mayors from Lloret de Mar, Salou, Torremolinos, Benidorm, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Calviá, as well as the Arona Tourism Councillor. The Adeje mayor highlighted what is now being called the fourth industrial revolution; in other words, new technologies in communication and information, which are affecting and changing the tourism sector. This was also in the context of Adeje winning top points for its Intelligent Tourism Destination project, at a national level.
This project sees the practical application of new technologies, improving the efficiency of tourism and residents’ services and improving environmental care, in addition to generating an interchange of data to improve the borough for everyone. It also deals with everything, from rubbish collection to parking, beach occupancy, and water in public showers etc. In general, said Mayor Rodríguez Fraga: “It’s the
efficiency of public services, and we are also committed to the reduction of contaminated emissions.” Following the public session, the Mayor and Adeje Tourism Councillor, Ermitas Moreira, took part in a meeting with the national alliance of “sun and beach” boroughs. A major priority of this group is to continue to press for different, central funding from Madrid, given the extra use of local resources, when local populations

Gym-owner denies abusing young boy THE owner of a Gran Canaria gymnasium in Arucas, who is also a martial-arts’ trainer, has been arrested and charged with sexually-abusing a young lad.
He is being held in custody, following an official complaint by a parent
of one of his students. But when questioned by the cops, the gym owner explained that although he lay beside the boy in the same bed, nothing untoward took place. The events occurred last Saturday night, after the child had asked his parents if he could sleep at the trainer’s house. He was set to take part a competition the following morning, and, he told them, he wouldn’t

have to wake up so early if he slept over. They agreed, but the next morning, when their son told them about the alleged abuse, they filed an official complaint to the police. The martialarts trainer was arrested, immediately, and admitted sleeping next to the young boy. But he is adamant nothing happened. But because of his sporting relationship with the boy, and his professional
responsibility, he has been locked up, temporarily, at El Salto del Negro, in the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas. The accused’s lawyer has been trying to get the accused out on bail, but that is not possible because the case involves child protection, and is under investigation. Meanwhile, the gymnasium has been closed since the day of the arrest.
Driver hurt in pile-up
A MAN aged 60 was injured on Monday in yet another TF-1 traffic incident, on the north-bound lane, in the Guimar area. It happened at 8.45am, and an onlooker told the emergency centre that medical help was needed, because the accident involved several vehicles. Upon arrival at the pile-up, an ambulance medical team began assisting the man because he was trapped inside his vehicle, but they needed help from the fire services. Once freed, though, he was stabilised by medics and transferred rapidly to hospital, where he was being treated for back injuries. The Guardia Civil were at the scene to assist with the emergency.
Police collar drug dealer
A MAN dealing in crack cocaine, who had six wraps already prepared, and his 60euro takings in small notes, crumpled inside his pockets, has been caught red-handed. National Police at La Cuesta Piedra town, in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz, charged the 23-year-old with crimes against public safety. Officers, with the help of surveillance equipment, witnessed the individual in action, and, once he spotted them, he fled into the entrance of a nearby apartment block, where they finally detained him. The surveillance equipment is set up in various areas around Santa Cruz, and used, specifically, to prevent the consumption and sale of drugs on the streets. To date, the National Police have issued fines to nine people, caught on camera, for dealing or taking drugs in public.

Ryanair’s ‘stay of grace’ for hand-luggage system IRISH low-cost carrier Ryanair is allowing a “stay of grace” for its new hand-luggage rules, which came into effect last Thursday. To the relief of their customers, officials say there will be some flexibility provided until they “get used to” the system. Just as the airline’s travellers had accepted the previous policies of having to check in their larger, hand-luggage bag, at the gate, free of charge, unless they had paid for priority boarding, the rules changed again. Now, they may only take a
small bag, measuring 40cm x 20cm x 20cm, on board, unless they pay six euros for priority boarding to carry on their 40x50x20cm wheelie-bag, or eight euros to check the larger bag in as hold luggage at the bagdrop. This will surely cause headaches for passengers,
since they will have to be at the airport earlier than usual, whichever option they choose. And those who do not wish to lose sight of their luggage are forced to pay to get on the plane first, when they might, actually, not want to board early at all. Oh yes, and only the first 95 out of
189 passengers can opt for priority boarding. But Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s marketing manager, claims the feedback from travellers has been “positive”, because boarding is much quicker, now that the departuregate bags do not have to be loaded before take-off. As yet, Ryanair has not responded to the Italian Government’s challenge, announced the day before the new rules came into force, that it would not allow the airline to charge extra for two pieces of hand-luggage, especially as the price does not appear until midway through the online-booking process. The country’s authorities say this constitutes a
“false representation” of the actual ticket price, and “deceives the consumer”. Although Ryanair operates all over Europe, Spain is one of its biggest markets, especially among expats living in Spain or the Canaries, who have relocated because it enables them to make cheap trips back to their countries of origin. And the recent upheaval and bad press suffered by the airline, as a result of ongoing strikes, along with baggage-policy changes, and, within the last year, cancellations, has led to the airline dropping its prices drastically, to keep customers returning to the company.
Space-age Lanzarote
THE European Space Agency (ESA) is planning to convert Lanzarote into its test field for future trips to Mars. And, next year, a “Rover” from the International Space Station will explore areas of the island, to test its technology for robotics and communications. The ESA has been transporting astronauts, mission-control experts, geologists and scientists from different disciplines to Lanzarote for two weeks, to prepare the ground for the planet mission’s “Rover” tests next year, because it is convinced “the island offers the most Martian landscape that can be found on Earth”. From this Sunday (11th Nov), for 12 days, the ESA’s “Pangea Project” will deliver German astronaut Thomas Reiter, Russian cosmonaut
Sergei Kud-Scerchkov, along with a researcher from the European Astronaut Centre, near Cologne, to Lanzarote. All three have been instructed on geological processes, and on how to interpret rock formations and exploration tools, before moving on to field work to put their knowledge into practice. The team has already been working in one of the world’s best-preserved, impact craters, the Ries Crater in Germany, and the trio has also trained in the Martian-like landscapes of the Bletterbach Canyon, in Italy’s Dolomite Mountains. The ESA is keen to train in Lanzarote, because, it says: “This island is one of the best places on Earth to understand the interaction of volcanic activity with water: two factors that are key to the search for life.”

THE opening of the new Paulino Suances plaza, in Las Galletas, took place last night (Thursday), following a major refurbishment. After being closed for a while, it now sports a new play area (top). And it won’t be long before it is followed in La Trujilla, Cabo Blanco, with the new park/ play area opening soon (bottom). These leisure spaces can be enjoyed by the whole family, pets included.

No wonder residents are forever foaming
A type of algae has created a dreadful smell, as well as a dirty-looking foam, at the famed Santa Cruz lake, in Plaza España.
Residents say the state of the water seems to be the norm these days. Yet, every Tuesday, Santa Cruz Council workers empty and clean the pool, and refill the capital’s special lake with clean, fresh water. Santa Cruz Mayor Dámaso Arteaga, who is responsible for the lake and its surroundings, says he is aware that the problem is obviously the lack of filters, and the continual emptying and refilling of water. For these reasons, he says,
the algae appears, creating the green-coloured, badsmelling foam. But if there were more water filters in the lake, he is convinced the problem would be solved. The Mayor is currently working alongside a maintenance company for a short-term solution. So far, they have increased the chlorine treatment, stressing that the water is not for consumption or bathing. In addition, the company is looking into how more temporary filters and water pumps can be placed. A plan has already been approved to remodel the lake slightly next year, while the work is in progress. More water filters will then be placed, which should resolve the overall problem.

Forum insists on new airport-terminal plan THE Forum of Friends of the South of Tenerife (FAST) is hoping to halt the tender of the new Reina Sofía airport terminal, and commission a new project. The organisation has proposed to the Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) that they stop the bidding for works on the South Airport’s new terminal, and commission a new project instead, employing an architect of prestige and professional experience. FAST says that it has, for 40 years, been one of the most profitable airports in the AENA network. And, it adds, part of that profitability has helped finance the construction of other Spanish airports,
including those of Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao. Now, though, FAST members insist that it’s time Tenerife Sur - Reina Sofia has a new-generation terminal.
They would much prefer that, instead of the proposed solution, which aims to connect the old terminal T1 with a room located in the basement. FAST President José
Fernando Cabrera says that the proposal AENA has just made public is not what Tenerife needs, and that a new project is essential. Cabrera has joined the wave of criticism, from public and
private organisations on the island, saying: “When it was necessary to expand Madrid’s airport, AENA accepted the proposal of its Autonomous Community, and commissioned the project to the famous architect, Antonio Lamela, now deceased. “The same happened with the Generalitat, and its commission to the architect Ricardo Bofill, while in the Basque Country, it was proposed that it was also a unique building, and Santiago Calatrava was commissioned.” He added: “Tenerife is a world-class tourist destination, and the terminal of its main airport is the first and last image our visitors see. “It is a very important part of our tourist future, which is the future of the island itself, and it has to compete in an increasinglyglobalised market.”

Sharp-shooter wanted to assassinate Spanish PM
A BRITISH man, wanted internationally for crimes against national security and public order, was caught and arrested on a cruise ship, which docked at the Gran Canaria port of Santa Catalina, in Las Palmas, at the end of October. National Police were alerted by Romanian authorities that a wanted man, 32, who had a European warrant out for his arrest and extradition, was aboard the ship. Undercover police, with the help of the cruise-line security guards, found him mingling with other guests in a communal area, trying to avoid being detected. When discovered, he threatened to cut the throat of a security guard. But, minutes later, he surrendered, and was handed over to the Judicial Authorities, rapidly, along with police reports.
Spanish media say Murillo Sanchez, who is said to idolise General Franco, sought revenge after the socialist PSOE Government, headed by Sanchez, announced plans to exhume the ex-dictator’s body. Murillo was arrested by local Mossos officers at his Cataluña home in Terrassa, where police are reported to have seized an arsenal of 16 weapons, including “four rifles of the highest precision, capable of hitting targets 1,000m and 1,500m away, and submachine guns. It is alleged that Murillo, a private security guard with a gun licence, said he was willing to “sacrifice for Spain”. Spanish media claim Murillo Sanchez is an “outstanding shooter” and is a member of his local Vallés Olympic

He was detained by Mossos d’Esquadra officers three weeks ago, after a member of the WhatsApp group chat, which included Murillo, tipped off authorities that the security guard was
recruiting accomplices to commit the attack against Pedro Sanchez. The security staff at La Moncloa, Pedro Sanchez’s residence as Prime Minister, were notified about the incident, immediately. Manuel Murillo Sanchez, who is awaiting trial, is being held in the Brians-2 prison, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, near Martorell.

Spring Hotels’ Challenge produces worthy winner THE international ideas competition, Spring Hotels Design Challenge, promoted by the hotel group, in collaboration with the Arquideas platform, culminated a few days ago. It left the judges facing a difficult verdict, but, finally, they awarded three finalist projects, as well as an honourable mention. In total, there were 55 proposals submitted from 17 countries, Alberto Carbonell, from the University of Alicante, taking first prize with an innovative design that interprets the Canary Islands’ landscape. The Challenge was organised to gain fresh ideas for the construction of their fourth hotel, in the Arona municipality. The jury looked at the participants: students and recent graduates in architecture from around the world; and their proposals for its new establishment of 525 rooms, with a view to design, unique and spectacular
landscapes that make the hotel an iconic space. The standard and volume of entries forced the judges to make assessments in two phases, to unify criteria and issue a fair verdict. The 11 finalist proposals represent the values sought by the contest, approaching the problem from different, highly-thought-out approaches, and full of talent. The first prize went to Alberto Carbonell (University of Alicante), with “Tenerife at home”, which was a project based on the topography of the land, and the use of its irregularities, to reinterpret the landscape of the Canary Islands. The second prize travelled to Turkey’s Yildiz Technical University, and the project, presented by students Egehan Savgi, Ihsanerdem Er and Mehmet Emin Turan, used the ports of the archipelago for the starting point of a proposal which allows them to develop activities, both above and below. Carlos Sánchez Sanabria and Verónica Rodríguez Vergara (University of Seville) achieved third place, with a project in
which water plans order the different exterior spaces of the hotel, and the endemic vegetation stands as one of the protagonist elements. An honorary award went to Cristian Uvidiu Pavel (Sapienza Università di Roma), for his ability to detect key aspects of the user experience as a starting point. The jury, formed by Miguel Villarroya (CEO at Spring Hotels Group), Raúl Domínguez (Marketing and Innovation Director at Spring Hotels Group) and Javier Molowny (Cofounder of the Arquideas competition platform), based their decisions on criteria such as quality of the architectural proposal, and the ability to transmit the idea or vision from a marketing strategy viewpoint. Spring Hotels Group, founded in 1985, is a 100% Spanish-owned company, currently formed by three 4-star hotels in Arona. Amazon staff plan a Christmas strike AMAZON packaging and delivery staff in Madrid have announced strikes affecting “Black Friday”, the December Bank Holiday, Christmas and the New Year, as negotiations over their working conditions and pay have stalled. Employees at the logistics centre in San Fernando de Henares have had ongoing disputes with Amazon, through their unions, since March, when the company “unilaterally imposed” a collective agreement for new and more restrictive working conditions, after the previous one expired. The sector-wide agree-
ment, which came up for renewal and renegotiation in March, included guaranteed pay increases, sick-pay top-ups so that employees off ill would still get their full wages, and more favourable overtime rates and job titles. Spanish labour law dictates that new working conditions and salary rates cannot be implemented when they are worse than those
currently in existence, without a majority vote in favour, by employees and their unions. And no further progress has been made since the San Fernando logistics centre went on strike over “Prime Day” in July. This time, centre workers will down tools over 23rd24th November, covering Black Friday; the Bank Holidays of 6th and 8th December, and the day
in between, as well as the weekend immediately following them. They will also disrupt Christmas sales, and the Three Kings or Epiphany celebrations, when Spanish people give and receive the bulk of their festive presents. This is likely to hold up deliveries of Amazon goods, and could also affect international Amazon orders where they pass through the San Fernando plant. But Amazon Spain considers the strikes unnecessary, because, it says, it has created over 2,000 permanent jobs in the country since 2011 with “competitive rates of pay”, and a “complete package of employee benefits”. The company insists it has focused on maintaining “direct and open dialogue” with its staff.

Man’s death fall
A YOUNG man, not yet identified, died after falling from the top of a building in Puerto de la Cruz on Tuesday afternoon. The tragic incident happened in the touristic area of Calle Bethencourt y Molina. And, said witnesses, the medical team did everything to try to revive the man, but to no avail. National and Local Police, who were at the scene, are trying to work out what led to the man’s death.

Spaniard shows her mettle Mystery job for - against a reckless dentist! Helping Hands A SPANISH woman, THE Helping Hands charity is performing an unusual task tomorrow evening, when it stages a Grand Children’s Charity function for adults, in support of Granadilla’s disabled and underprivileged children. Liz Montague’s children’s charity is happy to organise the evening event, at El Medano’s Restaurant
who warned a Barcelona dentist she was allergic to metal before having a cobalt prosthesis implanted in her mouth, has won 2.5 million euros in a case against the practitioner. The incident took place 11 years ago when the 38-year-old woman visited the dentist to address a problem with her teeth. She warned staff at the Vitaldent clinic, in the Catalan town of Montcada i Reixac, that she was allergic to all metals, “in person and on record”, reported regional daily El Periodico. But the prosthodontist took little notice of her patient’s remarks, and, instead, proceeded to implant a chrome-cobalt prosthesis in her mouth, without giving her any upfront information about the procedure. Soon after leaving the clinic, the patient began to experience infections, headaches, slurred speech and problems, while chewing
and swallowing. When she returned to the clinic for answers, the naïve dentist told the woman: “You just have to get used to it.” The prosthesis was eventually removed from the ailing patient’s mouth, but the long-lasting effects of the metal infection forced her to quit her job, leaving her in a state of “living death”. Barcelona’s Provincial High Court confirmed that the accused dentist and her Mapfre insurer would have to pay 884,937 euros plus interest, which swells the figure to 2.5m because the negligent incident took
place 11 years earlier. The judge also handed the practitioner a six-month, suspended prison sentence, ruling that she “had completely omitted” the woman’s warnings from her initial declarations. In addition, she had carried out no testing or prosthetic alternative “to ensure the patient’s safety”. The plaintiff ’s lawyer, Javier Leive Mendez, told El Periodico: “This sentence is a warning to health franchises that don’t take medical safety seriously, and use sensationalist ads without actually offering a proper service.”

Car-crash women treated in hospital
TWO woman, aged 59 and 55, were injured after one of them lost control of a vehicle, and drove into an Adeje ravine. The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon on Calle Charfa, as they entered Las Torres in Adeje town. Following an emergency call, ambulances and the fire ser-
vices were dispatched immediately to the scene, where medics quickly assessed both women. The 55-year-old had severe bruising, while her companion wasn’t injured quite so badly. Both ladies were transferred to Hospiten Sur, where they were under observation after having further treatment.

Brits and Irish leading the property-investment push
Former Queen of Spain celebrates 80th birthday DOÑA Sofía, the former Queen of Spain, was guest of honour at a lunchtime family celebration, in recognition of her 80th birthday last Friday, at the Palacio de la Zarzuela.
THE main drive behind a surge in foreign investment in Spanish property is coming from the British and Irish. The latest report from the Association of Spanish Land Registrars says that foreign demand increased by 11%, to 17,338 sales, in the second quarter of this year, compared with the same 2017 period. And, despite Brexit, the
British were still the biggest group of foreign buyers, making up 15% of the overseas market. But that’s still almost double the size of the French, who are the next biggest group. The Brits are also growing faster than the next two biggest markets, with the French demand taking an 8% dip. But the Irish have returned with a vengeance, with demand from the Emerald Isle booming by 47%.
The same evening, with her husband Don Juan Carlos, she attended a special gala concert, in her honour, put on by the Escuela de Música Reina Sofía, one of the causes closest to her heart. It was the second tribute paid to Sofia recently, because, a week earlier, she received a long, standing ovation in Madrid’s Teatro Real after actress Ángela Molina, as master of ceremonies, expressed the public’s “emotional gratitude for her serving Spain as Queen”. In her role as Queen Consort, Doña Sofia worked tirelessly for the under-privileged, and, since handing over the baton to her daughter-in-law, Queen Letizia, she has barely reduced her number of
public engagements. These, especially, concern the social and cultural work to which she has dedicated so much of her life. Sofia, seemingly tireless in her energy, said recently: “I’m 80 years old, but my mind still thinks I’m 50.” In fact, she has spurned retirement in favour of pursuing her goal of striving to be “useful to Spain”. After her husband, the former Rey Juan Carlos I, abdicated in favour of his son, Felipe VI, Sofia’s role as honorary president of many high-profile, charitable associations like Unicef and the Red Cross, passed
to Letizia. Yet Sofia has remained committed to a number of culturalaward schemes that carry her name. And she is also involved, closely, in the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia. In addition, she continues to promote educational, health and humanitarian projects to aid children, adults and immigrants, as well as the disabled, across four continents, and those throughout Spain. And Sofia still plays an integral part in an aid programme, to help those most affected during the toughest years of the recent recession.
Graffiti thugs assault passengers on Metro A GROUP of 34 graffiti artists spray-painted a Metro train in Barcelona in the early hours of Sunday morning, and injured three passengers, including a pregnant woman. Municipal transport company TMB is taking legal action against the culprits, as are the injured trio, and has passed security camera recordings to the courts to enable the thugs to be identified as soon as possible. One suspect was carrying items used for painting, as well as a Go-Pro camera, used to record the vandalism.
The incident took place at 3.48am at a station on the Barcelona underground system. One of the graffiti travellers pulled the emergency lever, just after it had passed through the station.
The gang then left the train and began spray-painting one side of it, prompting recriminations from passengers. Some of the gang attacked angry passengers, and a pregnant woman had paint sprayed in her face, while another two passengers were injured after being pushed and punched. The gang then dispersed in small groups, most of them managing to reach the street above. One person, detained by Metro security guards and handed over to the regional
police, was carrying items used for painting, as well as the Go-Pro camera. The emergency services were called to the scene to attend to members of the public, none of whom had serious injuries. Along with other rail companies, TMB has sounded the alarm about a rise in vandalism by graffiti artists, who are behaving increasingly more aggressively toward citizens, so they can complete their paintings. Rail authorities say that this kind of vandalism is, currently, the main safety
problem for train operators throughout Spain. These operators have called for action to combat the practice, and are coordinating with security forces and judicial authorities to take action. A similar incident took place just a few hours earlier, in the Madrid Metro system, when a group of graffiti artists stopped a train at the Hospital del Henares (Coslada) station, at 1.20am, to spray-paint it. They vandalised around 18 metres of the train as it stood there, before making off.

Bank chief says PM’s wage deal to cost jobs
THE Bank of Spain chief has criticised the proposals of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to increase the minimum wage, despite jobloss fears. Pablo Hernández de Cos claimed the 22% minimum-wage increase, proposed by Sanchez’s minority Socialist (PSOE) Government, would result in 150,000 job losses. A 0.8% total of Spain’s labour force could be at risk of redundancy warns the governor, who claims that evidence available shows that minimum-wage increases always have a “negative effect”. “The increase in the

A BRITISH teenager, who formed a suicide pact with his girlfriend, is believed to have pushed her to safety, before plunging to his death in Puerto Banus last Friday, around midday. The 16-year-old boy, who attended Marbella’s Aloha College private school, had gained access to the roof of El Corte Inglés department store with his British girlfriend and schoolmate, after announcing their suicide plans on social media. But the 14-year-old survived after he shoved her back, apparently, when she showed signs of hesitation. She was rescued by guards, before being taken to a Malaga hospital suffering an anxiety attack. Friends and loved ones
left heartfelt messages at the tragic site. Candles, flowers, and a teddy bear with handwritten messages attached, were propped up against the wall of the department store. “You will always be in our hearts, forever,” read one message. “We love you and we hope you have found peace now.” Another one said: “We will always love you and miss you,” and a third read: “To the family, friends and El Corte employees, with many condolences and sincere best wishes, a neighbour in Nueva Andalucia.”

Pound/euro exchange rate climbs to three-week high By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
ALTHOUGH the Bank of England (BoE) did not raise interest rates at its November policy meeting, the mood towards the pound picked up, nevertheless, in the wake of the announcement. While the latest US payrolls data pointed towards a continued tightening of the labour market, this was not enough to prevent GBP/USD exchange rate pushing higher. The GBP/EUR exchange rate, meanwhile, climbed to a
three-week high of 1.14 euros, as speculation over Brexit continued to pick up. Even though signs still point towards the BoE leaving interest rates on hold for some months to come, thanks to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit, this was not enough to discourage investors. As policymakers continue to signal that interest rates are likely to rise further, over the coming years. this has given GBP exchange rates a boost. Rumours that the UK and EU are nearing a breakthrough, on the future of financial ser-
vices, also encouraged demand for the pound, in spite of the still-outstanding issue of the Irish border. While October’s UK manufacturing and services PMIs proved disappointing, this was not enough to weigh down GBP exchange rates. Meanwhile, demand for the euro failed to
pick up in the wake of an acceleration in the Eurozone consumer price index, While the inflation rate remained in excess of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) 2% target, investors still see little chance of interest rates rising, in the near future. As the US trade deficit widened further than
forecast, in September, this limited the appeal of the US dollar, in spite of the latest, positive, US jobs data. Anticipation, ahead of the mid-term elections, and lingering concerns over the impact of the Trump administration’s push for protectionism, also weighed on USD exchange rates. Confidence in the pound could deteriorate if the third-quarter, UK, gross domestic product fails to show an improvement. Unless the UK economy demonstrates resilience in the face of Brexit anxiety, support for GBP exchange rates looks set to diminish. An uptick in growth, on the other hand, could help the pound rise to fresh, multiweek highs, against its rivals. Stronger German trade data may offer the euro a rallying point, meanwhile, as investors look for an incentive to buy back into the single currency. The issue of the
controversial Italian budget could keep the euro under pressure, though, as the government shows no signs of budging from its budget-deficit target. As long as the Federal Reserve maintains a hawkish outlook at its November policy meeting, paving the way for a December, interest-rate hike, this should keep the US dollar on a stronger footing. Britain to have a new Spain envoy
BRITAIN has announced a replacement ambassador to Spain, after current envoy Simon Manley steps down next summer. Hugh Elliot, who has worked at the British Government’s Department for Exiting the European Union, will take over the reins from Manley, and he’s delighted. He wrote on Twitter: “It will be a pleasure to represent Britain in Spain, while Simon said: “Hugh is a great friend and colleague, who will be an excellent ambassador for our country.”
Elliot has worked for the Foreign Office previously, in its Europe and Communications departments. He has also worked in Paris and Buenos Aires, and has also worked for the Anglo-American mining company. Manley, who has served as Britain’s ambassador to Spain for three years, joined the Foreign Office in 1990, and acted as an envoy for Britain at the United Nations, from 1993 to 1998. He was also posted to the Council of the EU from 1998 to 2002, and the European Commission in 2003.

Saturday 10th November, BBC1, 20.30 The Royal British Legion’s Festival of Remembrance will be broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall on the evening of Saturday 10 November. Presented by Huw Edwards, the Festival will be performed in front of Her Majesty The Queen, members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister together with senior members of the military. On the eve of the hundredth anniversary of the Armistice the event will honour the remarkable generation who contributed to the First World War. Performances will include Sir Tom Jones alongside the RAF Squadronaires, Sir Bryn Terfel, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones, Sheridan Smith, and The Kingdom Choir. Michael Palin, Adrian Lester, Nina Wadia and classical cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason will also lead a unique tribute to the First World War and a special citation written by Sir Michael Morpurgo will be read. The Festival of Remembrance will also celebrate one hundred years of the RAF with a performance by The Central Band of The Royal Air Force. The Band of HM Royal Marines will create a musical display to mark The Zeebrugge Raid of 1918. The Armed Forces of today will also play an important role and special recognition will be given to the patients and staff at Headley Court in the year the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre closes its doors for good. From the two World Wars to present day conflict, as the poppy petals fall in the Royal Albert Hall, the Festival will pay tribute to all victims of war and remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Struck down by the Spanish Flu in 1918, aged just 28, in his short life Egon Schiele created over 3,000 drawings and paintings, self-portraits and nudes. Agent provocateur of the modernist era, he was a taboo-busting rebel whose art looks like it was made yesterday: self-obsessed, exhibitionist, unafraid to confront questions of sexuality and identity. To mark the anniversary of Schiele’s death a century ago, this film tells Schiele’s dramatic story in his own words, using original letters and writings, many of them translated for the first time; celebrating his remarkable artistic achievements but also debating the controversies around his work. His sexually frank images shocked early 20th century Vienna and still challenge us today. But are these the images of empowered women in control - or figures of of voyeurism? Schiele didn’t just make groundbreaking art. He was also a new kind of artist, carefully crafting his own myth, pioneering the notion of the artist as personality and performer in a way that would influence generations of other cultural trailblazers. Some of them, including Iggy Pop, also appear in the film. Directed by Teresa Griffiths (Leonora Carrington: The Last Surrealist, Sylvia Plath: Inside The Bell Jar), the film uses visually striking dramatic reconstructions, choreographed by acclaimed dance company Gecko, together with animation, art and photographs to conjure up the passionate, provocative world of Egon Schiele. Rotherfield is one of the last villages in the country not to have a war memorial. But this year on 20 October almost exactly 100 years after the end of World War One, the village’s war dead will be honoured with a memorial at last. John Craven is there in the run up to this important day and hears that nearly all of the 93 Rotherfield men who lost their lives in the Great War were farm labourers, agricultural workers, grooms and carters. The memorial will also carry the names of the people who died in World War Two including one woman. The memorial will feature 114 names. Countryfile follows the story of Owen Holmwood a local painter and bellringer who wrote to his mum while training 20 miles saying he was enjoying the concerts, football and boxing and could she send him some cigarettes. He went to France, but never came back. And now his name appears on the new memorial - a reminder for future generation of the sacrifices of an earlier one? The village is marking the centenary in other ways too; John meets artist David Peacock who has produced nine cut-out soldiers made of plywood, which will be dotted around the village to make people to think and reflect. One of them was inspired by an old photograph of his grandfather on his wedding day in 1915. John also joins the school children pinning commemorative art work on the houses of the soldiers who left for war and never came home. Including that of Owen Holmwood. The story of the village is a microcosm of what happened in WWI across the country. The story of the loss of life in Rotherfield reflects the national picture.

“I went to see the installation at the Tower of London and there were as many poppies in the moat as there were people had been killed in the First World War for the British. It was a very emotional moment, and I think it brought home to people how much sacrifice the country made by losing all those young men and women in that terrible battle.” - Colin Lewis, whose father Sidney fought in the First World War aged just 12 This new one-off documentary for ITV marks the centenary of the end of the First World War by following the four-year journey of more than 800,000 ceramic poppies first installed at the Tower of London in 2014. Called The Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, this tribute to the British and colonial lives lost during the 1914-18 war captured the public’s imagination as it formed a ‘moat’ around the tower and became a visitor attraction. This documentary, narrated by Sean Bean, follows the journey of the poppies as the ’Wave’ and ‘Weeping Window’ segments from the tower went on tour around Britain. It uses archive footage and new interviews with historians and those whose relatives went to war to tell the story of the brave souls - many of whom signed up because they wanted to help the nation - who fought and often paid the ultimate price, never to return.

Dan Snow investigates a century of war trauma, from WW1 shell shock to modern PTSD. Historian Dan Snow breaks the silence around the devastating impact of war on the mental health of our soldiers. For 100 years, men and women who risked their lives for their country have continued to suffer on their return. In this one-off film for BBC Two, Dan explores the challenge presented by an ongoing mental health crisis among war veterans. Dan shares frank and moving conversations with veterans of World War Two, the Falklands and Afghanistan, and also with relatives of those who fought in World War One. Jimmy Smith was traumatised after fighting in many of the major battles of the Great War. He was sentenced to death by court martial at only 26 years old for misbehaviour and desertion. With each subsequent war, the symptoms changed, but the story remained the same. Victor Gregg’s marriage collapsed after witnessing the horrific violence of WWII bombing raids, as a prisoner-of-war in Dresden. Ex-paratrooper Dave Brown has struggled with adjusting to civilian life since his service in the Falklands, and Sean Jones, who survived an IED attack in Afghanistan in 2008, was sent back for a second tour without realising that he had been diagnosed with suspected PTSD. Dan discovers how the shell shock of WWI has evolved into the cases of PTSD that modern soldiers suffer with today. Shockingly, lessons learnt from previous conflicts were soon forgotten. Battle trauma leads to alcoholism, broken families, violence and suicide on a shocking scale in the UK. He asks military psychiatrists and experts why we’re still struggling to help the psychiatric casualties of war. Dan has many close family ties to the military campaigns of the First World War. Delving into previously unseen archives he reveals the difficult history of how Britain has reacted to the psychological consequences of warfare.

The Mercury’s rising again KEDDY’S Entertainment has interviewed many artistes, and Dave Bolam, stage name Dave Santana, performs a tribute to a British singer, songwriter and record producer, best known as the lead vocalist of rock-band Queen. He was known for his flamboyant stage persona, and four-octave vocal range, and Dave told us what led him to Tenerife, and, more importantly, why he chose to perform as the one-andonly Freddie Mercury. And here’s Dave’s story: I’m a singer-songwriter from Yorkshire, but, at the age of five, I was in a foster home, and didn’t know who to turn to. But I soon discovered my love of music, and started singing, before teaching myself to play instruments. My foster mum, June, supported me, and she even encouraged me to begin my journey into the showbiz world. I then started entering singing competitions, and had my fair share of ups and downs. But I was always gaining valuable life experience, in this ever-changing entertainment industry. Over the years, I have been in bands, and I sang in a duo named Extreme Conextion with Andrea Alexander, performing a variety of songs, from Italian to Dirty Dancing, Grease and many more. I even got to sing at Sunderland Football Club’s Stadium of Light, in front of 45,000 people. Wow, what a show! I will always remember the crowd’s energy, and I truly felt on top of the world. I then entered a competition called Chicago Rock Café in Gateshead, and was proud to have gone through to the regional finals in Livingston. Loraine Crosby, who was judging the competition, approached me and asked me to join a band called Unbreakable, a Westlife tribute, which was
unbelievable… a great time in my career. Then I started performing as a soloist, singing all sorts of music, from the 60s through to the present day, writing my own songs and really enjoying becoming even more creative. It was such hard work, and, like those competitions I entered all those years ago, there were many ups and downs. But it was all worthwhile, because I become an award-winning solo artiste in 2004, under the name of Dave B. I was then asked to play keyboard for an Abba band, and, after a while, I had the opportunity to audition for a Queen band as Freddie Mercury. I jumped at the chance, and passed it with flying colours. I had a month to learn all his mannerisms and how he spoke, to emulate the showman he once was. I could never have dreamt of being one of the best tribute singers in the UK to the main man, in a band called Monarchy, with Steve Green, Dave Raye and Steve Ward, who had played with Jimmy James and the Vagabonds. I then approached a record label with my brother, under the name Two’s Company, at GMI records in Cambridge, selling all over the world, but mainly in Japan, China and Germany. I lived all over the UK, and absolutely loved releasing original music under the name Pace Well Entertainments and Def Jam recordings, from America, with my friend, the one and only Silvar Laidlow from (he knows she knows)
the X Factor. This gave me a fan base after releasing Bulletproof, which is selling worldwide and still going strong. And that makes me so proud. Last year, I became an Open Mic UK finalist for original music, and was offered a future music course through Sony and Warner, to help me along with my music. However, for personal reasons, I had to think about my life and what I was going to do. Then, my friend Mark Clarke Carr, from Harvey’s Bar, told me to come to Tenerife. I jumped on a plane, and, the minute I landed, I was performing as Freddie Mercury under the name Killer FM, which is a true passion of mine. Now, I’m more and more recognised as one of the best tribute acts in the world, and my big dream is to perform in Vegas. I have come this far, and I would like to thank everyone who has helped me over the years, and who has offered me a chance to perform for them. I would also like to thank Keddy’s Entertainment for giving me the opportunity to perform in the hotels here. My show is energetic and fun, with plenty of costume changes, and it’s not to be missed! So that’s it from our Freddie Mercury Tribute, Mr Dave Santana. We’re sure you’ll agree that Dave has been on a whirlwind journey, ending up in our little paradise people call Tenerife. No matter how you start out in life, or where you’re
from, always know that hard work, determination and pure passion will help you succeed. Family fraudsters jailed for food-poisoning claim FOUR members of a British family, convicted of filing a fake food-poisoning claim after their holiday in southern Spain, have been sentenced to three months in prison by Liverpool High Court.
Mystery of the missing minor
“AS much as you go to the police, you will not find her… no matter how much you look for her, you will never see her again.”
These were the chilling words found in the Instagram inbox of missing teenager Josefa Sanchez Cortes, who disappeared last Wednesday. Twelve hours later, the family of the 14-year-old Mallorcan girl, found a message on her Instagram, only accessible via her brother’s iPad. It told the desperate family that they would never again see the daughter they call Josela, who has long brown hair and brown eyes. The minor, who attends Jesus Maria school in Palma, is around 5ft 6ins tall and weighs 10st 10lbs. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing her navy-blue school tracksuit, a lightblue shirt and white sports shoes. She is described as a teenager who never goes out with friends, only with her family. She only socialises through the photo-sharing app
Instagram, and the family do not let her go out alone; not even to the cinema, according to mallorcaconfidencial.com. Her aunt, Josela, says the teenager always takes the same route when she goes to school, accompanied by a family member. They live in Son Oliva and leave the house, on Isaac Albéniz street, at 7.45am. Within 10 minutes, she has arrived at Jesús María school. Josela added: “At about 2pm she eats, takes a nap, and then goes to play with her cousins downstairs. She does not go out with anyone.” Police are working on the theory that the child met with someone she had been talking to through Instagram. The mother of the missing child is “totally destroyed”, and a relative said: “They have had to give her pills, because she does not know what to do.” The family have appealed to the child, and/or to the people she has met, saying: “Do not be afraid to come home.” Another aunt of the child said: “We have gone out to look for her everywhere, and we are desperate.”
They were also fined 842 euros each, for “concocting a fake claim for gastric illness to win compensation”, and they will have to pay the travel operator’s legal costs. The family members had claimed that they fell ill from food-poisoning while staying at Benidorm’s allinclusive Aqua Magic Rock Gardens, in July 2015. The claim was filed against travel operator Jet2 Holidays, from whom they demanded around 50,000 euros in damages. But, in a statement, Steve Heapy, boss of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “For some time, we have warned that making false claims could lead to serious consequences, and this ruling shows how serious they can be.” The quartet, Claire, Janet and Jane Weir, along with Michael Jameson, alleged that the hotel food had given them nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
and stomach cramps. But all four had boasted on social media they were having “the best holiday ever”, and “enjoying every minute”. Hotel records also showed them enjoying alcoholic beverages, including beer, gin and vodka, even though they were supposed to be suffering gastric illnesses. “We always held that it was a false claim because our food meets all safety
standards,” said Pilar Lafuente, an official with the hotel chain Magic Costa Blanca, which operates the Benidorm hotel. Lafuente said that the family were thinking only about “the possibility of getting a free vacation and some extra money”. Unfortunately for them, though, British courts and travel companies have long been aware of this technique.
Young stowaways among immigrants are increasing THE number of young, unaccompanied stowaways reaching Almeria port is on the rise, according to the Guardia Civil. Last month, Guardia officers assisted 31 people trying to reach Spanish territory, eight of them children travelling alone, as vehicles and passengers came off the ferries coming from North Africa. This brought the total
number of stowaways intercepted at Almeria port, while trying to slip into Spain, to 117, so far this year. Many were hidden among luggage or goods, or inside vehicles. In August, however, one man jumped overboard while the ferry was docking. It took about an hour for officers to pull him to safety and on to the boat Rio Jiloca, as he fought against being rescued. When they did get him on to dry land, he tried to run off immediately, the boat
captain suffering a minor injury to his arm as he stopped the stowaway from launching himself back into the sea. Of particular concern to Guardia officers was the volume of youngsters risking their lives by concealing themselves underneath lorries, inside wheel-arches, and even inside vehicle engines. So far, fortunately, they have been located by sniffer dogs, and, subsequently, given assistance. But it can only be a matter of time before there is a tragedy.

Baby is sheer magic for ‘gay’ penguins!
PENGUINS Sphen and Magic, both male, are happy to announce the arrival of their chick, whom they hatched, and are sharing the job of looking after it. The “gay” couple are said to be “doting” on their tiny offspring, Sphengic, who was born on 19th October, weighing just over 3ozs, at Australia’s Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. Sphen and Magic caught the attention of aquarium workers when they were seen waddling around, constantly, and going for swims together. They then began building a collective nest of pebbles, prompting the aquarium to provide a dummy egg for them to look after. And, when they proved up to the task, they were given a real egg. “The pair have bonded,” said penguin supervisor Tish Hannan. “They recognise each other’s signature calls and songs, and
only bonded penguins will be able to find their partner, successfully, using their calls when they are separated.” Unlike many mammal species, male and female penguins take on the same parenting roles, and share parental duties equally. “There is no real difference between males and females when it comes to breeding behaviours,” said Hannan. “So it is common to have male-male or female-female, showing courtship and breeding behaviour.” In the wild, however, these courtships are unlikely to result in a chick, so their relationships are normally short-lived, with the penguins becoming unsatisfied and looking for another partner. “But because we have given Sphen and Magic the opportunity to have a potentially-successful breeding season, it is very likely that they will return to each other again next year,” said Hannan. This is not the first time same-sex penguin couples have adopted eggs in captivity, because a handful of zoos, worldwide, have reported similar incidents.
Migrants’ storm tragedy A TOTAL of 18 immigrants were confirmed dead in stormy conditions off the Spanish coast, in a twoday period this week. They were attempting to cross the Alboran Sea, between Africa and Spain, when their boat encountered problems while navigating a fierce sea on Monday. The bodies of 13 were found off the coast of Melilla, Spain’s enclave in Africa. And an estimated 15-17 were reported missing from the doomed
vessel, of which five have since been found dead off the Cadiz coast, according to the Guardia Civil. Despite rough seas, however, the Guardia reported that “20 migrants arrived there, in the midst of a storm, in a very old, wooden boat”. Salvamento Maritimo rescued 100 migrants from the rough seas in the space of 24 hours, and, so far this year, an estimated 49,000 migrants have arrived in Spain by sea, of which at least 567 have died during the treacherous journey.

The event made a massive difference, and raised 21,500 euros for the charity supported by the Rotary Club - 1 child, 1 meal, 1 book a day for underprivileged children, across 21 schools within Tenerife!! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who came along and donated.
LA Camella’s horse and pony riding stables, last Sunday hosted their second successful show, and a great day was had by all. All the riders showed off their abilities to the judges, who were brought over especially, from the UK. The show provided children and adults with an opportunity to display the skills they had been learning, either through lessons, or with the pony club, which runs on the weekends.

Quite a few years ago, my husband and I began our own business selling excursions, and this has grown into a fullylicensed travel agency. Also, when a British-speaking ex-pat wants to visit another country, setting off from Tenerife, the communication is, obviously, all in Spanish. Obviously, this is not ideal, and can, understandably. take a lot of people out of their comfort zone. So, three years ago, I looked into the opportunity of taking on a franchise of a UK-licensed travel agency, who would allow me to operate from Tenerife. Greetings! It’s great to be back! What a journey I have had over the past few years, and I have learned so much! I have sent people to Madagascar and Australia, on safaris and cruises, skiing, to luxury over-the-water villas with seaplane transfers, lodges with hot tubs in the UK, and good, old-fashioned Butlins. You name it …! I have access to over 450 suppliers, who offer unbelievable prices. Most importantly, all packages are fully ABTA and ATOL protected, which, in this day and age, is extremely important! The collapse of Monarch airlines, last year, has really shaken up the industry. No longer is it the best option to book flights, transfers and accommodation as separate elements. Believe me, in our Los Cristianos travel agency, we are, on a weekly basis, rescuing tourists who have “turned up” in Tenerife, only to find that their accommodation was either double booked, or didn’t even exist. In this article, I’m intending to
look at some of the fabulous, worldwide destinations that don’t have to be a dream, but can actually become a reality! Booking is easy, and, as your personal travel consultant, I will be with you every step of the process, from start to finish. We also offer interest-free
payment plans, and some holidays are pre-bookable, up to 2020. The only downside is that, in general, my holidays begin from the UK. So, if you are resident in Tenerife, we need you to travel to the UK first. There are plenty of options to originate from Tenerife airports, but this generally increases the price. You will probably have a stop-off somewhere on a long haul, so what’s the difference if it’s in the UK, rather than Barcelona or Madrid, for example? Insurance breakdown assistance and repairs By Emma

RECENTLY, we have received a lot of questions regarding insurance companies and repairs. Here, we are going to cover some of the most-common questions: When I breakdown, do I get to choose the garage where my car gets taken to? Yes, you do. All insurance companies that offer the service of “asistencia en carretera” (road-side assistance) allow you to select the garage where the car is taken to. The operator at the time may ask you to which garage you want the car taken, or they may just ask you the area of the garage, and then you inform the recovery company of the car’s final destination. We have been told, increasingly, that a lot of recovery companies, once they have arrived at the breakdown, are
telling customers that the company has said no to their choice of garage, and that they have to take it somewhere else (usually their own repairer garage). This is not the case. The companies, usually either RACE or ARAG, can help in selecting a repairer. If you are not familiar with one, however, the ultimate choice is yours, and the car can go to your own mechanic. If I have a battery failure, do I have to purchase the new battery from the recovery company? As above, if your insurer offers the road-side assistance service, then, normally, they also offer a jump-start service from home. The normal practice is to send out a van with jump-starter or jump-leads, and for them to jump-start your car. They then usually offer, for a fee, to fit a new battery for you. This is not compulsory, and you don’t have to pur-
chase their battery. You can ask them jump-start your car, and then go and collect your own battery from your mechanic or parts supplier. When I have an accident, do I have to go to my insurance company’s approved repairer? In most cases, no. However, some companies, as a result of a reduced premium, do not allow you freedom of choice. However, most of the bigger companies, such as Linea Directa, AXA, Zurich, Liberty, Plus Ultra, Mapfre etc., allow you to select your own repairer. This is obviously better, because you are then free to select someone you trust, or have used in the past. However, some, but not all, agents do try to force/coerce the customer to use the approved repairers, because it is cheaper for the company. This is because approved repairers are forced to offer cheaper prices, so it can
mean that corners are cut during the repair. As already mentioned, depending on your insurer, you can take your car to the garage of your choice for the repair. This is something to check when taking out insurance with a new company. Do I have to use the approved glass repairer? Again, in most cases, no, but some companies offer the option of a reduced premium, if, in the event of a break or crack, you are happy to use one of their authorised repairers. If, however, you wish to use your own choice of repairer, then that option is available to you, as long as your policy allows it. Again, this is something to ask when changing companies. But most of the larger glass companies now come and change the glass on site, which generally suits the client more than having to leave the car at a designated garage.
If I have an accident and I don’t use the insurance company’s approved repairer, am I still entitled to a hire car if my policy covers it? This, again, is dependent on the insurer, but, with the larger companies, the courtesy car is a facility offered in the event of an accident, regardless of where the vehicle is being repaired. To date, I haven’t heard of a company that forces you to use their repairer, in order to have access to the courtesy car. The best advice we can give is to ask these questions, when either getting your first quote, or when asking your agent what options and/or restrictions are applied to the policy that you are considering. Remember that cheapest is not always best. In these cases, you often do not find this out until something happens! As Martin Lewis would say, read the small print!
Vaccines banned in Japan By Val Sainsbury JAPAN has the lowest infant-mortality rate on the planet, following a ban on mandatory vaccinations, and they urge other countries to follow this firm stance. Citizens of Japan are statistically proven to be the healthiest and longest-living people in the world. It may come as no surprise to many that the Japanese Government banned a number of vaccines that are currently mandatory in the United States, and has strict regulations in place for other Big Pharma drugs and vaccines, in general. Japan’s anti-vax policies have long been criticised by vaccine pushers in the US, who claim that vaccinating the public “promotes health”. However, Japanese people live longer, healthier lives than Americans, with babies born in the US twice as likely to die in infancy, than those born in Japan. It’s clear
to see that Western nations have a lot to learn from the Japanese, when it comes to their approach to vaccinations, and other issues facing public health. The Japanese are vaccine sceptics, and, because of adverse reactions suffered by Japanese children, have banned many vaccines. Citizens are well educated on the dangers of over-vaccinating their children, and oppose the use of the multishot variety, such as the MMR vaccine. Following a record number of children developing adverse reactions, including meningitis, loss of limbs, and even sudden death, the Japanese government banned the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine from its vaccination programme, despite facing serious opposition from Big Pharma. Despite the fact that it has been blamed in vaccine courts for causing autism, vaccine supporters still deny the correlation between the MMR vaccination and sky-rocketing rates of autism spectrum disorder, which now affects at least one in 45 chil-
dren, with even higher rates of diagnosis among boys. However, the vaccine carries other serious risks, in addition to the autism links, which has led to an outright ban of MMR jab in Japan. The MMR vaccine was introduced in Japan in April 1989, and parents who refused the compulsory vaccine were fined. After three months of analysis, officials realised that one in 900 children developed adverse reactions to the vaccine, a rate that was 2,000 times higher than expected.
Officials had hoped to resolve the problem by switching to another version of the vaccine, but the excessive amount of adverse reactions persisted, with one in 1,755 children affected. Testing of 125 children’s spinal fluid determined that the vaccines had entered one child’s nervous system, with two, additional, suspected cases. Four years later, in 1993, the government removed the MMR mandate against measles and rubella. A doctor from Japan’s Ministry of Health and Welfare admitted that the sepa-
rate, individual doses of measles and rubella cost twice as much to administer, and he defended the decision, stating: “but we believe it is worth it.” Furthermore, a member of the health ministry also anounced that the ban had not caused an increase in deaths from measles. The list of adverse reactions to the MMR vaccine, straight from Merck’s vaccine-package inserts, is long and alarming. A shortened version of the vaccine damage associated with the MMR vaccine includes vomiting, diar-
rhoea, anaphylaxis, ear pain, nerve deafness, diabetes, arthritis, myalgia, encephalitis, febrile seizures, pneumonia and death. A search of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database shows the following statistics from the United States: over 75,000 adverse events have been reported from any combination of measles, mumps, and rubella vaccines. Oltra questions his tactics AFTER an amazing comeback against Alcorón last week, Tenerife travelled to Soria, in the north of Spain, to face a Numancia side who had lost their previous two matches. Both coaches made two changes from their previous teams for this clash. Tenerife coach Oltra preferred Carlos Ruiz in the centre of defence, with Malbasic, man-of-thematch against Alcorón, up front. Numancia started the better of the sides, and kept it tight at the back, after coach López Garai had asked his players for maximum concentration from the first minute, having conceded an early goal previously. They kept the ball well and tried to break down the five-man, defensive formation Oltra favours. Tenerife had the first real chance on the half-hour, as Luis Mila played in Bryan Acosta on the edge of the 18-yard box. He curled in an excellent shot, but it was equally well saved by Numancia keeper Juan Carlos. And the home side had a scare on the stroke of half-time, when Guillermo headed towards his own goal, causing uncertainty

in the stands. But it came to nothing, and it remained goal-less going in to the break. But Oltra must have felt the luckier coach during the break because there were red-card claims for Dani, who came out of his area to clear a ball and brought down Yeboah. But the ref rejected them. The second half started well for Numancia, who, after
just four minutes, produced a Mateu cross from the left, which Dani came to claim, only for Diamanká to head home. Tenerife players immediately called for a foul on their goalkeeper, but the referee and linesman gave the goal. There was an immediate change in attitude by the home team, sparking two Tenerife changes, involving Nano Mesa and Naranjo,
the team shifting from a five-man defence to four, to give them more depth. Only some top-class saves from keeper Juan Carlos prevented Tenerife scoring, after Luis Milla tried another long-range free-kick, and Camille had a lengthy shot, which a back-pedalling Juan Carlos tipped over the bar. Meanwhile, Numancia had their chances, too, and a
great double save by Dani, when Guillermo was oneon-one, kept Tenerife in the game. A goal-line clearance by Malbasic, after Higinio headed against the bar for Numancia, was a real scare for the visitors. In fact, home fans thought the ball had crossed the line, but TV replays denied them! As Tenerife continued their quest to rescue a point, Numancia all but sealed the win after a lovely throughball from Oyarzun left Guillermo facing Dani a second time. On this occasion, he made no mistake, slotting it home past the Tenerife keeper with ease, in the 72nd minute. Tenerife continued to push throughout, but their efforts were in vain as the final whistle signalled their fourth league defeat of the season, leaving them languishing in 18th place in the table. Following his changes, Oltra is now questioning whether a five-man defence is his best option. But he sees positives from the match because he believes that “Nano and Malbasic can play together”. Tenerife’s next match is at home against fifth-placed Albacete, whom they beat 2-1 away last season. They desperately need a repeat of that result!

Nora’s winning farewell A LARGE crowd turned up at Camping Nauta Bar last Friday, for the eagerly-awaited finals night, and the darts certainly lived up to expectations. First up, Andy, Kev and Colin, from The Loch-In Bullseyes, took a one-leg lead. But Waterfall’s Steve, Dave and Tony upped their
game and won 3-1, to take the Division 2 trebles competition. In the Ladies’ threesomes, T, Kirsty and Julia, from Ourplace Playgirls, couldn’t match the darts of Gio, Karen and Ann, of Pas O Nadas ‘B’, who won 3-1 to take the trophy for the fourth, consecutive year. Well done girls. Sam, Steve and Joe, representing Suters 20:30 Crew, went into the trebles finals feeling confident. But they could not cope with the awesome darts of Daddy Cool, Luc and Andy, from Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who were in unstoppable form, winning 4-0. In a fitting last game for Palms Pool Bar, Nora, along with Lynn, overcame Georgina and Kath, from Waterfall, 3-2, in a nailbiter. The showdown went one way, then the other, until Steve finally triumphed 4-3, in a first-class finale to a fabulous night. Congratulations to all who made it this far. Kiwi coach itching for this huge battle NEW Zealand head coach Steve Hansen believes his team’s clash with England tomorrow (Saturday) is bigger than last year’s series against the British and Irish Lions. Hansen’s All Blacks are set to play at Twickenham for the first time since their 2015 World-Cup-final
victory over Australia. This sold-out Test match follows the 2017 Lions tour, when New Zealand were held to a draw on home soil. “I think the England match is even bigger, actually,” said 59-year-old Hansen. “I think the Lions tour has made it bigger because we weren’t successful.
“In only being able to draw the series wasn’t successful to us. But that’s made this week have a sharper edge to it, which is good. You’ve got to be reasonably stupid if you can’t work out this is going to be big.” He added: “There will 80,000 people in the stadium, and
