Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice
T
he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 euros or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative?
A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.
The returns over the last few years have been:
2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 7.6% 7.5% 10.3% 6.5% 7.8% 7.8% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Sanchez promises Brits they will have no fears Cont. from Front “I appreciate and thank Prime Minister Theresa May’s commitment to safeguarding those rights for us,” he told political magazine Politico. “And we will do the same with the 300,000 Britons who are in Spain.” Sanchez, installed as Spain’s Premier in June, has become the most prominent EU leader to call for a second vote on Brexit, because he believes it would be painful for both the UK and the EU. And he warned that “no good would come” from Britain’s departure, just four months away. “If I were Theresa May, I would call a second referendum - no doubt,” he said. “I believe it’s a great loss for both, and I hope it
can be reconsidered in the future,” he added. The anti-Brexit stand by Spain’s leader comes after some 700,000 Remainers and Brexiteers alike, marched through the streets of London last month, demanding a People’s Vote. And it’s a demonstration, Sanchez feels, which cannot be ignored. The Prime Minister said: “Although the UK is a marvellous country, which has had a positive influence on European politics, it is on a path of self-absorption, which isn’t going to be good for the UK, or for Europe.” Although many EU leaders have been openly negative about Brexit, and its impact on member states, the majority have not commented on a second referendum, until now! Only Maltese Prime
Minister Joseph Muscat and Czech Republic leader Andrej Babis have called on the British Government to stage a second vote. The majority of EU leaders have kept quiet, for fear of interfering in British politics. And no wonder, because it is a highlysensitive topic, following the resignation of countless MPs, including more from May’s Cabinet today (Friday), on top of a recent poll, in which 54% of Brits said they would now choose to remain. “It’s true that we’re now on the verge of signing a transition deal,” said Sanchez. “But I’d like to see the British Government calling a second referendum. I don’t mean now, but in the future, so that it can come back to the EU, in another way… but back into the EU.”
We could be Spanish, says British Airways
IT is hard to believe, but it is understood that British Airways wants to be considered a Spanish company after Brexit, to maintain its status as a European carrier. International Airlines Group (IAG) has been seeking the support of the Spanish Government and the European Commission for over a month, to prevent Britain’s exit from impacting the business negatively, reported Spanish daily El Pais. The airline group, which also owns Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus, has registered offices in Madrid. But its operational headquarters are based in London, which means that a no-deal Brexit could be detrimental to the airline. The EU rules now state
EUROCRATS have announced that British tourists won’t be required to apply for a visa to travel to European Union member countries after Brexit. British passport holders will be able to visit Europe for three months at a time, whatever the outcome of Brexit, deal or no-deal. The news comes as the European Commission revealed plans to review its visa regime, after Britain’s exit from the European Union.
that more than 50% of an airline firm must be owned and controlled by member states, for it to be considered a European carrier, which is something IAG might struggle to meet, after Brexit. Ahead of Britain’s exit in March, the IAG company, believed to be worth almost 23bn euros, hopes it will continue be considered an EU-based company, and, therefore, covered by the same rules. According to three government sources, and one from the EU, reported El Pais, Brussels would have to ratify the group’s nationality. Following the news of IAG consulting the Spanish Government, Tom Watson, the Labour Party’s deputy leader, Tweeted: “Spanish Airways”. IAG was founded in 2011, and is the sixth-largest airline company in the world.
No visas needed for British EU tourists Eurocrats declared: “The European Commission has today proposed to grant UK citizens visa-free travel to the EU, after the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union. “However, British citizens wishing to work abroad in the European Union will almost certainly require visas, PostBrexit, although the new
guarantee will assure free travel to the Schengen area. “It means that UK citizens will not need a visa, when travelling to the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days, in any 180-day period.” The new visa rulings will come into effect immediately after a nodeal Brexit; or, in the case of a deal being made, the
ruling will be applied after the transitional exit-period concludes, in December 2020. Eurocrats warned, however, that the visafree travel offer will be withdrawn if Europeans are not offered equal travel rights to the UK after Brexit. Theresa May has vowed to allow visafree travel to the UK for
Europeans after Brexit. The fresh visa regime applies to every EU member state, which will, therefore, include Spain. A UK government spokesperson said today in response to the offer: “We welcome the proposal by the European Commission, which reflects the future relationship that the UK wants with the rest of the EU.”

Santa Cruz forging ahead with carbon-dioxide fight THE city of Santa Cruz has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by more than 15% since 2015, after making enormous strides in recent years. And the reduction is all down to hard work, as well as the incorporation of photovoltaic panels in municipal offices, and the progressive installation of automatic light sensors in the streets. First Deputy Mayor, Zaida González, told the Spanish Assembly of Cities for Climate, which was hosted in the capital last week: “Santa Cruz is becoming a capital more responsible and respectful of its urban environment. “And that is a path shared by everyone in the city, and in which we must persevere
THE Cabildo and Santa Cruz Council, after signing a new contract with Interurbanos de Tenerife Transport (TITSA) on Monday, have announced improvements to guarantee urban bus lines in the island’s capital. The initiative will involve, among others, more buses on eight of the routes, connecting the main station with different areas of the city, starting this weekend. City Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez announced the developments, alongside Cabildo President Carlos Alonso; the fourth Deputy Mayor and Public Services Councillor Dámaso Arteaga; and Alejandro Fernández, head of TITSA’s Urban Zone in Santa Cruz. Bermudez said that this bank of improvements was “focused, fundamentally, on the frequency of the lines, and, in turn, directly connects with the plan to renew the vehicle fleet to incorporate, gradually, up to 75 new buses, thanks to the enormous effort made by the City of Santa Cruz, with an 18.5m-euro grant, by 2022.” Alonso, meanwhile, considered that the changes “respond to the demands of the residents,
because there is no going back.” She added: “Climate change is a global challenge for the entire planet, but it is fundamental to offer a local response, in each municipality, in each city. However modest, each
advance is extraordinarily valuable, not only for the environment, but also for each one of us.” With this statement, González inaugurated the XII Annual Assembly of the Spanish Network of Cities
for Climate, of which Santa Cruz has been active for a decade. Ms González, who welcomed more than 60 attendees to the assembly, headed by its Seville President and Mayor, Juan Espadas,

to encourage the use of the bus, and convert this means of transport into a real alternative to private vehicles”. He added: “This will, especially, allow a service of quality buses towards sustainable mobility, and that will help the TITSA fleet to be renewed by 70% during, 2019.” Arteaga stressed: “The plan covers improvements until 2022, and will involve a contribution of eight million euros in 2019, to renew the TITSA fleet with 13 types of new vehicles. “In addition, there are up to eight lines in which frequencies are improved within Santa Cruz, which confirms the City Council’s decided commitment to urban public transport.” Finally, Fernandez said that the renewal of the fleet “will enable TITSA to have more modern vehicles, with better accessibility, greater comfort for passengers, and even less pollutants, thanks, among other things, to the purchase of
four hybrid vehicles in 2019, on 910 line.” He added that the acquisition of the new buses “will save up to 265,000 litres of fuel per year, and 715 tons less carbon dioxide will be emitted into the atmosphere.” Route changes: In the case of line 912 (Exchange-Ifara-Los Campitos), the extension of the usual service hours is included on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and holidays. The frequency
is also improved during the week, extending its schedule until after 10pm. The lines providing their service in Ofra, like the 905 (Muelle Norte-Ofra) improves its frequency in the morning hours of the week between 6-7.30am. Also, at weekends, the frequency of buses on this route is changing, immediately, from every 1520 minutes to every 10-15 minutes. For its part, line 908 (Exchange-Ofra) improves

During her speech, Ms González shared the work developed by Santa Cruz in recent years, with the area’s Councillor, Carlos Correa, and the whole government team, “with a planned policy of action, stable over time, and that gives results”. The First Deputy Mayor told the Assembly: “In the last four years, we have invested nearly 400,000 euros, so that the public buildings of our capital are really efficient and progressively self-sufficient, thanks to the incorporation of photovoltaic technology.” This work has enabled the city to be recognised, officially, by the Spanish Office for Climate Change (OECC), for the mitigation of greenhouse gases. its frequency to make it more stable throughout the day. Thus, it will have trips every 12 minutes between 7am and 10pm. Circular lines 914 (Exchange -Weyler-PilarIntercambiador) and 920 and 921 (Exchange -Ramblas-Exchange) improve their frequency on weekdays, mainly during peak hours, and will not take more than 15 minutes between each trip. Line 935 (Exchange -AñazaLos Alisios-Santa María del Mar) will have a new trip at 6.35am, from the main bus station. It also improves the night schedules, maintaining a constant, 30-minute frequency, and adding two exits, at 9.35pm from the Exchange and at 9.55pm from Santa María del Mar. Line 940 (Exchange -Acorán-Costanera) will have an additional trip from the Exchange, at 8.50am, and another exit from Costanera at 9.15am. With these new frequencies, what was a no-service period is now covered. In addition, the line will have an additional trip from the Exchange at 8.30pm and return from Costanera at 9pm. All these improvements and changes can be found on the website www.titsa.com. The information telephone number is 922 531 300, or on the bus company’s socialmedia platforms.

Jailed for four years, girl who glassed friend’s face
A DUTCH girl, who smashed a glass into her friend’s face on a night out in Veronicas in September 2015, has finally been sentenced to four years in prison. The girl, who was also ordered to pay 34,000 euros in compensation, disfigured her pal’s face after a fight broke out between the holiday-makers, who were out partying in Las Americas. The victim suffered serious injuries, including stab wounds to her face, back and arms, as well as broken teeth, and psychological stress, which she is still battling. She spent 32 days in a critical condition in hospital, and, in total, 180
days to heal, physically. But she is still carrying visible, facial scars. The court dates were suspended on three occasions, but the hearing finally went ahead with both girls giving their statements from Holland, where they live. But the assailant, three years on, still denied that she had the fight with her best friend. However, the Court accepted the victim’s story, which, they believed, was credible. Her account remained unchanged throughout the judicial process, although the accused said the friend was very drunk, and was out of her mind on that particular night, back in 2015. At the time of the incident, there were no witnesses in the area and no operational CCTV cameras.

NEWS IN BRIEF Trio are arrested for attempted extortion
THE National Police have arrested three men for threats and extortion, after they had offered to help an Arona person solve a family issue. But when the man found out that they were willing to use illegal methods to resolve the conflict, he backed down. The trio, a 36-year-old Panamanian and two Spaniards, both 26, then began harassing him, physically and verbally, using a telephone to make death threats, aimed at him and his family, if he didn’t pay them 10,000 euros. The victim, now frightened by the men, decided to serve a denuncia on them with the police. He then received several phone calls from an individual, who, posing as a high-ranking Guardia Civil officer, said he required a 3,500-euro payment to avoid the victim receiving a supposed, judicial conviction. The man went, promptly, to the National Police, who carried out an investigation and were able to identify the three perpetrators. Officers arrested them, after clarifying that the facts denounced were true. The case is now in the hands of the Court of Instruction, and the men are awaiting trial. The National Police, attached to the Judicial Police Brigade of the Local Comisaría del Sur de Tenerife, have been praised for their quick intervention.
Brave cop nearly blinded
A POLICE officer was almost blinded last week after being glassed in the face in Torremolinos, when attempting to stop a bar fight in the “La Nogalera” area. One of the aggressors smashed a crystal glass on his face, which almost left him without an eye. He was driven to hospital immediately, where he received 20 stitches to his face. The suspects escaped in a Ford car, but the registration plate was identified by numerous witnesses, and the police eventually traced the occupants, two Spanish men, aged 56 and 34, and arrested them.
Trio’s holiday nightmare
A BRITISH man went missing on the Costa del Sol, after a night out with two pals, which ended in a car crash, and a brutal stabbing. The three friends, from Liverpool, had booked to stay in Benalmadena for a two-week lads’ holiday, but it all went wrong within hours of their arrival. Police were called to Benal Beach apartments in the early hours of 27th October, after the oldest of the three, aged 43, was, allegedly, stabbed in the shoulder-blade, hands and legs by the youngest, aged 28. He was transferred to the local Clinical Hospital, but, fortunately, the injuries were not serious, and he was discharged a few hours later. The third friend told police he had decided to stay in that night, and lent the other two his Nissan Juke rental car. Hours later the youngest man returned, alone, and was “very nervous and aggressive”. When the friend asked him where the car was, he replied: “over there.” The friend went out to find the rental car crashed and damaged, at the side of the road. When he returned to the apartment, he found his other friend bleeding, after the youngest had, allegedly, stabbed him and fled. The stabbed victim said he had come back to the flat and found the young man in a “super-aggressive” state. He claims he tried to calm him down, but an argument led to the assault. But the young man is still missing, and his whereabouts unknown.

City’s 10,000 hungry ones are fed, at least
OF the 10,000-plus people staving off their hunger through the Santa Cruz Food Bank (Bancoteide), more than 2,500 children contribute to the number in the municipality.
And of those youngsters, according to the Municipal Institute of Social Assistance (IMAS) data, 311 are under two years old, and 2,197 are aged between three and 15. The figures reflect how, though the number of entities distributing food has been increasing (currently 44 collaborate with Bancoteide), the number is scarce compared with the volume of people
actually fed. According to the latest referral data, recorded by the IMAS for September, the average number of beneficiaries of each of the 40 associations, registered with Bancoteide collaborators at the time, was 260. And of the total served, the one with the highest percentage is Añaza’s UTS, which, although having the third-highest number of referrals (2,062) to the six entities that collaborate in the distribution of food, 28% relates to children (more than 570). A similar percentage, just one point below Añaza’s referrals, is Barranco Grande, in which just three entities distribute food to 634 beneficiaries, of which 174 are children.
In global numbers, most entities that distribute food are concentrated in the centre of Santa Cruz. Thus, the UTS Centro has 15 associations, which, in turn, serve 2,511 people. Of these, 2,061 are adults and the rest children, which demonstrates that these figures show, on average, that these associations serve about 167 users each. The number contrasts with the Los Gladiolos UTS, whose three associations serve almost as many people as the 15 in the centre. In total, there are 10,434 people (2,508 are minors) in Santa Cruz who eat, thanks to food delivered by Bancoteide to their collaborating entities. It’s a high demand, which is not decreasing, despite good economic prospects.
Big Five arrested from loaded migrants’ boat THE National Police have arrested five of the 73 migrants who arrived from South Africa, in the boat which docked in Los Cristianos on 28th October. They are believed to be behind the crime against the rights of foreign citizens. And they have been singled out as the “bosses”, who had an important role in the organisation of the trip and
direction of the vessel, from the point of origin to the Canarian coast. The five detainees, together with the proceedings conducted by the National Police, were placed at
the disposal of the Arona Court of Instruction No. 4, acting as guard, who have imprisoned four of them. The actions were carried out by National Police, of the Foreigners and Borders Brigade, of the South Local Commissariat of Tenerife. At the time, 24 people on board the boat said they were minors, but forensic studies have determined that only six of them were. The remainder are of legal age, and are having deportation orders processed.

Rambo takes reins in Santa Cruz city
SANTA Cruz Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, chaired a meeting on Monday to finalise details for the imminent filming of Rambo V, which began yesterday (Thursday) in the city. It was attended by Cabildo Tourism Councillor Alberto Bernabé and Economic Promotion Councillor Alfonso Cabello, along with representatives of the film producer, Nu Boyana, and the Santa Cruz Film Office. They reviewed different aspects of the planned municipal services to aid filming, and Bermúdez said that a shoot of such characteristics required the appearance of different municipal services, when it came to facilitating production work, and also minimising possible inconvenience to residents. The Mayor spoke of the positive, economic impact of this and other film projects, which have already taken place in the city, “in terms of economic dynamism and also the promotion, globally, of Santa Cruz”. He added that the recording would continue until 4th December, in the neighbourhoods of Cepsa,
Ifara, Somosierra, Taco and Barrio Nuevo, and that Santa Cruz would report, regularly, on the conditions of the shooting. For his part, Bernabé referred to the previous work carried out by Turismo de Tenerife, through the Tenerife Film Commission (TFC), so that the big producers could choose the island for filming. “Tenerife is again an international reference, thanks to the work we
have done with the Cabildo to promote the benefits of Tenerife in this aspect, thanks to its natural conditions,” he said. “This allows us to accommodate almost any script, as well as the interesting tax incentives for producers, and a local audiovisual sector, prepared to support these productions.” Monday’s meeting was the last one, to refine preparations for the shoot,
whose technical team is composed of 250 people and which will also include over 1,000 extras. Cabello stressed that the presence of this crew has contributed to the high hotel occupancy in the Tenerife capital, and brings an important economic return for Santa Cruz. The Councillor also said the producers’ art department started making decoration tests on Monday.

Brits banned from taking killer drugs SPANISH health authorities have banned doctors from prescribing a common painkiller to UK tourists, after the drug was linked to the deaths of 10 Britons.
Nolotil, a painkiller not licensed for use in the UK, is prescribed for mild pain, such as toothaches and muscular discomfort, but an extremely rare sideeffect of the drug is blood poisoning. Yet Spanish investigators found fatal blood poisoning, caused by Nolotil, to be more frequent among British patients because of an undefined “genetic peculiarity”. The Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS) has now updated its guidelines for Nolotil, telling doctors not to prescribe it to “those visiting Spain for a short time,” reports The Local newspaper. An investigation by AEMPS was able to confirm 10 deaths of British patients, who had been prescribed Nolotil while visiting Spain. All the cases, confirmed by AEMPS, involved patients contracting agranulocytosis, which is an extremely rare side-effect, which, said investigators, may be more common in Britons. Agranulocytosis is defined as severely-low, whiteblood-cell counts, which affects the immune system, and can lead to sepsis (blood poisoning). While the “genetic peculiarity”, cited by AEMPS, has not been specified, it has previously been reported that people with fair skin are more likely to be affected. Some of the reported British deaths include the parents of Gary Robson, 59, from Romford, Essex, who believes both his mother and father died as a result of taking Nolotil. His mother Gloria, 81, was prescribed Nolotil for back pain, and his father Alan, 82, died while taking the drug in 2017. Nolotil manufacturer, Boehringer Ingelheim, said: “The drug is available in many generic forms in Spain, and other European countries, and there is no scientific evidence that specific populations are prone to develop sideeffects.”

75% scam is just the ticket for companies THE Canarian Government and Ashotel, the islands’ association of hotels, have joined forces to complain of residents not receiving their promised 75% discount for flights and ferry journeys. In a joint statement, they say they have noticed a ticket-price increase for air and sea journeys, since the 75% discount was introduced for residents travelling between the islands, and connecting to mainland Spain. The two authorities have now called for an Air Connectivity Price Observatory, to monitor
the price of ticket sales by flight and ferry companies, for Canary Island residents making online bookings, or in travel agencies. Ashotel says companies must advertise the normal ticket price first, then apply the 75% discount, and not the other way around. This would guarantee
transparency and concerns all travel agencies, as well as airline and ferry companies. The authorities’ joint statement also said: “It should be forbidden to ask, at the beginning of the search, whether the passenger is a resident of the Canary Islands or not.
“A transparent tariff policy should ask, exclusively, for the route you want to make, and the dates and times of preference. “And only when making the payment should they request this information from the client to apply the resident discount. Otherwise, this may lead to
irregular practices.” The concept of an Air Connectivity Price Observatory has now been supported by Canarian President Fernando Clavijo. The belief is that travelticket costs have been increased, so that, together with the 75% discount, the respective selling companies’ profits do not dip so much. Canarian residents eligible for the discount should make a preliminary search, as non-residents, to check times and dates, and the price. They should then search again, as a resident, to make sure they are being offered the right price. And any doubts should be raised with the relevant company.
Speed limits to drop on secondary roads SPEED limits on Spain’s secondary roads, including the Canaries, will drop from 100km/h to 90 from January, to help reduce crash deaths, which have been rising over the past four years. Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), part of the Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure, says that around two in 10 fatal accidents happen on motorways, with the rest being on back roads, in built-up areas and on secondary highways or non-motorway trunk roads.
The vast majority are on B-roads, where speed limits vary, but, where otherwise unstated, sit at 100km/h.

There will be a stay of grace on New Year’s Day, but, from 2nd January, cars and motorbikes will
have to stick to 90km/h or less, on B-roads, with vans, lorries, buses and coaches restricted to 80km/h. At the moment, the limits are 100km/h for cars and motorbikes, 90 for buses and vans, 80 for lorries on roads with hard shoulders of at least 1.5 metres (4ft 11in) or dual carriageways, and then 90, 80 and 70, respectively, on smaller, narrower roads. The DGT is confident that a 10km/h drop will translate to a 10% reduction in road deaths. Fatalities on Spain’s roads have risen gradually since 2013, when 1,680 drivers and passengers were killed, to 1,830 in 2017. Tougher penalties for using a mobile phone at the wheel will also be introduced from
2nd January, and drivers caught will be penalised six licence points, not three as at present. It makes this dangerous offence comparable with drink-or-drug driving, reckless driving, refusing to be breathalysed, having speed-camera detectors in the car, or driving at more than 50% above the speed limit. Failure to use a seatbelt, a proper child-restraint system or booster seat, or a helmet on a motorcycle, will cost four licence points, rather than three. And beware, if you believe you’ll continue to get away with using mobiles while driving, because unmarked vans will patrol the highways, keeping a sharp eye out!

And the winner of the gift pack is:

Congratulations! Please come to the Canarian Weekly offices in Las Chafiras (above Juno) to collect your prize.
THREE cheeses produced in Spain have been selected among the world’s top 15 from nearly 3,500 others, chosen in more than 40 countries, and some are extremely affordable. The ceremony, considered to be the Oscars of the cheese industry, took place in Bergen, Norway. And hats off to Fuerteventura’s Maxorata medium-matured with paprika, or Semicurado con Pimentón, by the livestock farmers’ group in Puerto del Rosario, which came a respectable 11th. The Madurat, created by Formatges Mas El Garet in Tona, in the province of Barcelona, came sixth in this year’s World Cheese Awards. It was beaten by the Norwegian brand Fanaost, an aged gouda made on the small livestock farm of Ostegarden, home to just 12 cows, which made the top slot. The only British brand in the top 15 was made by Golden Cross Cheese.
But Spain’s Valladolidbased Entrepinares cheese factory, which comes under the title of La Reserva, or “The Reserve”, was 14th. It is very frequently seen in Mercadona supermarkets and comes in at just 10.20 euros a kilo, which means a typical 200-gram lump costs just 2.04. Although only three Spanish brands made the top 15, another 12 reached the world’s top 80. It was no mean feat out of almost 3,500 varieties, winning their producers the prestigious “super-gold” medal.

A MEETING of the different Canarian security bodies was hosted recently by Adeje Council, along with Government delegate Elena Máñez Rodriguez. Also present were Juan Miguel Arribas, general head of the Guardia Civil in the Canaries, and Eloy Román Rodríguez, Tenerife South’s National Police Commissioner, as well as representatives of Adeje’s Local Police force. The session, which dealt with a number of on-going and current issues, also discussed, in detail, the need for co-ordination and better security in Adeje. There was also mention of creating, in the future, a service or an office dedicated to the needs of foreign visitors. The meeting heard that in recent months, there had been a decrease in crimes reported across the board, which was welcomed by the Government delegate and Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga. The Mayor said: “Although we are never happy when any crime is committed, these better figures are a result of the work by the men and women of the

Police, along with the Guardia Civil, was to promote social harmony,
too, among all residents and visitors, which was vital for the good of the tourist

industry. “No tourist chooses Adeje because we offer top security, but they won’t return if it is lacking,” he added. Other concerns discussed included the number of vacant homes and premises in tourist zones, occupied by squatters, the intrusion of PRs on the streets, and the need for more cops, both in the National Police and Guardia Civil forces, in Adeje and throughout South Tenerife. Rodriguez Fraga insisted that there was a need for at least 120 more agents to meet daily demands. There was agreement across the board on the important issues, and on the use of coordination tools, to improve the overall security in the region. The creation of a permanent, co-ordinating body was approved by everyone, with representation from all three of the operational security forces, to meet once a week. The Adeje Mayor said: “Up to now, the existing co-ordination has worked well, with good, fluid, communications between all the security forces. “But we have decided to create this permanent body, which will serve to improve security, overall, in terms of services and attention to the public.”

Sweeping change as Kellys form a union A SPANISH group of hotel cleaners has launched its own, national union, with Adeje hosting the initial Kellys Union Tenerife Congress on Wednesday, supported by the local Council. The goal of the conference, said Union founder Eulalia Corralero, was to “create a space for conciliation, and to strengthen the collective”. The union has been in existence for just a few years (the name “Kellys” is a play on words on “those who clean: que limpian”). And representatives from all over Spain were in attendance, as well as Tenerife branch President Mónica Garcia and the Cabildo’s Equality Councillor, Estafanía Castro, along with Adeje Mayor José Miguel
Rodríguez Fraga. Mónica said the movement started four years ago with a Facebook group, and has grown since. And the cleaners, mostly women, are fighting to
Tourist chief so eager to entice regular 18m Brits
SPANISH Tourism Minister Maria Reyes Maroto has held a meeting with UK tour operators in London, to ensure that 18 million Brits still take their holidays in Spain, even if there is a no-deal Brexit. The Government’s Trade, Industry and Tourism Minister spoke with Thomas Cook and Jet2 bosses at last week’s World Travel Market, in an effort to lay down Brexit contingency plans. Ms Maroto was seen deep in talks with Jet2 chief Steve Heapy and Peter Fankhauser, the Thomas Cook boss, as she looked to shore up the future of tourism in Spain. The Minister said: “For our Government, Brexit is a top priority, and the
commitment we have to Spanish companies and Spanish nationals in the UK, as well as with Britons in Spain, is to ensure that we will have a solution for any problems that might crop up. “British tourists need to know that Spain next year will still be an attractive destination. We want to be optimistic, but we are at a point at which we all have to keep up the pressure on the negotiators, to resolve the few issues that are still pending.” Tourism makes up 11% of Spain’s one-trillioneuro economy, and British tourists are the largest visiting group, making up 25% of Spain’s total tourism figures, annually.
ensure that, despite changes in employment law and hotel practices, often outsourcing cleaning services, their rights are protected. Councillor Castro said: “It is no accident that the first conference in Spain is being held in Adeje, given the commitment its Council
and the Mayor have always had for the more vulnerable. “This conference is not looking for confrontation, but for conciliation, as the founder has stressed. The position of chambermaids has been intolerable in the past. But, thanks to the Kellys, their struggle is now visible.”
Mayor Rodríguez Fraga welcomed the delegates and underlined the importance of their work, in building the society we enjoy today. He told the meeting: “Women workers have, over the years, sacrificed a lot; silent and invisible in helping to create a healthy tourism industry in Spain. “Sometimes, we forget that the construction of a country depends on many more people than intellectuals and business leaders.” The Mayor added: “If tourism isn’t working to improve the lives of those who live here, we’re not doing things properly. “Tourism has to create wealth, but that has to reach all sectors of the population, allowing us live in a society which is more just and equal.” He pledged that his council would be backing the Kellys in their judicial fight for better work conditions, insisting that exploitative practices harmed tourism destinations.
The annual battle to beat female violence AS in previous years, Adeje Council is organising a range of activities in the lead-up to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which is always on 25th November. The activities include workshops, short-story competitions among the borough’s secondary-school students, events with young people to promote good relationship habits, information tables, the annual reading of a manifesto declaring the Town Hall’s rejection of this scourge on society, and also a minute’s silence for all gender-violence victims. Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, Adeje’s Equality Councillor, said: “While we will be working during these days to place the spotlight on violence against women, and help for victims, our Council is dedicated to this issue all year round, working with special services. “We offer help and assistance, workshops, informa-
tion events, courses and activities for the population in general, with a particular focus on our primary and secondary-school students.” This year, for the first time, all members of the Network of South Boroughs for Gender Equality will send a united message, with a joint campaign on social networks. During next week there will be a meeting with students from the borough’s secondary schools (3rd year), about giving the youngsters the necessary tools to de-
tect and combat abusive behaviour. Next Friday (23rd Nov) at midday, the institutional manifesto will be read, followed by a minute’s silence on the steps of the Town Hall. At 7pm that evening, prizes for the winners in the short-story competition will be awarded. The campaign comes to a close with an event on the eradication of gender violence, ‘I Jornada Miradas Violetas’ with the participation of judicial experts. Prior registration for this event is required.

Jail for the man who terrorised his family
AN abusive, 39-yearold man, from the Gran Canaria town of Teror, has been imprisoned for eight months, with a restraining order to keep away from his wife for two years, and from his son for one year. Local Police arrested the man in the town of Los Giles, on the grounds of domestic violence, after reports that he was abusing his wife, and his 13-year-old son. The incidents happened on 6th November, when the police received a call from a young teenager at around 1pm, asking for help. He said his father had just attacked him aggressively, and that he had escaped from the family home with his mother. Local Police, as well as UPAL (family protection unit), attended the family home, where they found the youngster with his mother. The young boy had marks
across his neck and arms, showing that he had been abused, physically. When the police questioned the mother, she explained that the marks on her son were caused by her partner, the boy’s father. He had returned home in a drunken state and decided to finish what had been a small discussion with his son, by battering him. The mother had to drag the boy away from the father, who threatened to kill them, and they both ran off. The 36-year-old mum told police that her partner had attacked their son several times, and that she had reported him on various occasions, and not only for his physical abuse on the boy. She also claimed she had also suffered sexual abuse by her long-term partner. But she told the officers she had retracted the reports.

Your voice, your vote! ON 26th May 2019, European Union (EU) voters and EU citizens may vote in Council (Town Hall) and European Parliament elections in Spain, if they intend to do so. The deadline to confirm your intention to vote in Spain ends on 30th January. And, to be clear, nationals from EU countries living in Spain, and from those countries who have signed an Accord with reciprocal rights, have that right to vote. The national office has sent this information to local Town Halls: Residents of EU member states, resident here in Spain, who meet the standard requirements to vote (age, etc.) have the right to participate in local and European elections here in Spain. Although the United Kingdom has expressed its intent to leave the EU on 30th March 2019, the Electoral Census Office (ECO) has not excluded its citizens from the electoral roll for the municipal elections, as well as for the European Parliament elections. However, their inclusion will cease to have effect if the United Kingdom leaves the EU on 29th March 2019. EU nationals resident in Adeje
In the coming weeks, the Electoral Census Office will send a written notice/letter to EU citizens resident here. In general, these will be sent to EU citizens on the ‘Padrón’ (resident register), but who have not voted in the past; nor have signed the formal declaration of their desire to be on the census. The letter should include a formula, whereby people can indicate, online, their intention to vote. Alternatively, you can call into Adeje Town Hall and sign the relevant paperwork there. You can also use your NIE number to sign up online on https://sede.ine.gob.es But you will need an electronic certificate to use this method, or use the special CTT (telematics communication number that is in the letter you have received from the Census office), or you can send your signed intent to vote by post to the Census office. Just follow the letter’s instructions. Those already registered in the electoral roll, having expressed their intent to vote in Spain, maintain their voter status and shouldn’t need to make a new declaration, until they request their removal, or cease to reside in Spain. All this is assuming you are
already on the local Padrón. If not, you have until 30th January 2019 to register both as a resident and a voter. Nationals resident in Adeje from countries with a reciprocal voting Accord If you are resident in Adeje and from a non-EU country, but one that has a reciprocal voting agreement with Spain, and you meet the standard voting requirements, you can ask to be on the census for the May 2019 local elections. Countries that have such an agreement are Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago. General voting requirements The general voting requirements for all those who wish to vote are: *That you are over 18 years of age and haven’t had your official right to vote taken away *That you are on the Adeje ‘Padrón (resident register) *That you have authorised Spanish residency *That you have lived legally in Spain for the requisite time, depending on the agreement with your country of origin. If required, a certificate can be obtained from the National Police offices.

Cheers! Booze, sex and tapas will preserve life! LIFE expectancy is longer in Spain than it is in the UK… but only if the natives follow a golden formula.
This has been pointed out in several studies, the latest from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, published in The Lancet medical journal. The new research predicts that, by 2040, Spaniards will have the world’s longest life span, enabling them to stay alive until they are 85.8 years of age, compared with 83.3, which is the age Brits would be able to look forward to, putting them 23rd on a list of 195 countries. Yet more than twice as many Spaniards than Brits smoke, and, for the latter, who equate Spain with sun and sangria, this is hard to comprehend. “How can the Spaniards live so long when they drink and smoke?” mused a recent article in UK newspaper The Times. It is true that the Spanish drink, but, data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OCDE), suggests the UK intake has
fallen, from the 17.5 litres of pure alcohol per head, swigged in 1980, to 8.6 litres per head in 2016. The same source shows that in Britain, alcohol consumption has dropped from 10.8 litres in1980, to 9.5 in 2016. And, of course, Brits do smoke. Yet more than twice as many Spaniards smoke than Britons. So what are the Spanish doing to extend their lives? Apart from eating paella, as well as vegetables, pulses and fish, The Times suggests that it is the key lifestyle choices which are helping them keep the Grim Reaper at bay, a little longer than most. These are habits, says the newspaper, we should all adopt. *Walking: The Times points out that the Spanish walk at least four days a week, for 10
minutes or more, according to the 2014 Eurobarometer. Even better, 37% of them walk or ride bicycles to work. *Mediterranean diet: This is shown to lengthen life expectancy and protect people from pollution effects. If there is one thing Spaniards do right, it’s eating fish, fruit and fresh vegetables, nuts, pulses and olive oil. * Boozing: The Times says we should also keep drinking red wine, although, a daily glass of red wine is only beneficial to men over the age of 45 and women over 55, because it helps people in these age groups reduce the risk of heart disease. Helen Bond, a spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, the Britain’s consumption of red meat and salt is relatively high. But only 20% of Spaniards buy
processed foods, while Brits eat more processed food than anywhere else in Europe. *Siestas: We’ve been cutting down on the time we take for lunch and an afternoon nap for years, but, says a study by Simple Logic, only 18% of Spaniards still take a siesta after their midday meal. But perhaps we should rethink this. Just 26 minutes of shuteye is recommended by the Spanish Society of Doctors for Primary Health because it improves memory and mood, and keeps your heart healthy. But do it regularly to reap the rewards, and keep it short and sweet. *A longer working day, punctuated by breaks. In Spain people work an average of 1,687 hours a year, 331 hours more than Germany, 173 more than France, 117 more than Switzerland but just six hours more than the UK. However, while the working day finishes at 6pm in Britain, many in Spain stay until 8pm. And though there have been attempts to change it, there are Spaniards who believe that a longer but more relaxed workday is better for one’s health, according to The Times. *Making love: According to a survey of 15,000 women
from all over the world, Spanish men make the best lovers. They have more (and better) sex. And just because they get home later, doesn’t mean they are too weary to perform. But according to a study carried out by Gedeon Richter, while British women have sex 1.7 times a week, it is more of a routine for Spanish females. *Tapas in the evening: We know the international community is somewhat befuddled over the difference between tapa, ración and pincho, and it is often not fully understood that tapear could well involve far greater quantities of alcohol than food, though there is “the walk”, from bar to bar. The Times believes that after eating a far bigger lunch than is common in the UK, dinner there comprises tapas, which is described as small plates of food. But this is not always the case. But there is a saying in Spanish that roughly translates as; “big dinners fill graves”. Generally, reducing our calorie intake helps Brits to live longer, and, if they get the proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fats right, the benefits to our health could be even greater.
Stamp Duty on mortgage deeds By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
I STARTED writing this column after the Supreme Court judgement of 16th October, which ruled that the banks were responsible for the Stamp Duty on Mortgage Deeds. But I postponed it, for reasons to be explained in this article. The Stamp Duty The Stamp Duty (AJD) represents the highest sum on mortgage-deed expenses, and, until now, the banks had refused to accept those expenses. For example, in an average 150,000-euro mortgage, the total expenses could be around 5,000 euros, including
administrative costs, Land Registry and notary fees, as well as Stamp Duty. AJD is the most relevant one, ranging from 1% to 2% of the sum, depending on the Autonomous Community. This calculation omits the survey, which no entity is covering because the buyer can choose an external valuation. Supreme Court judgement This decision had important consequences. The first one is that it accepts that either a company or a self-employed person, who has constituted a mortgage for professional reasons, can claim the constitution expenses. Until now, only the individual consumer (not entrepreneur or professional) could do it. Another consequence is that the ruling determines the taxpayer will be the mortgagor, not the mortgagee, which resolves contradictory sentences in this regard. With this last one, it is clear that the bank is responsible
for these expenses. One day later, the Supreme Court suspended the effects of such a judgement to review it, and take a decision by the plenary session of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber, formed by more than 30 judges. The decision was postponed until 5th November, and then delayed for a further day. Then, the court chamber finally ruled that the Stamp Duty was to be paid by the customer/mortgagee after all, and NOT the bank. To understand what happened, and there is a big confusion in the media about this topic, the Supreme Court has many Chambers. Chamber 3 sits on contentious-administrative matters, and, within it, Section 2 deals with taxation matters, which is why this Section took the decision on 18th October. But because of contradictory judgements, some saying the bank was liable, while others the client, and because of the repercus-
sions, Chamber 3 decided to join in all the Sections of the Chamber) for a final ruling. This means that, from now on, the Supreme Court will filter those claims, asking for payment of Stamp Duty by the bank. Government’s Royal Decree On 9th November, the Government dictated a Royal Decree, modifying the Law of Stamp Duty, stating that the banks (mortgagor) would pay the tax. But the Decree should be amended again because the Government forgot to include Saving Banks in it. The problem now is that a Royal Decree cannot modify a Law, as the Law is, as a rule, hierarchically superior. Although the Government considers that this is a case of “extraordinary and urgent matter”, this regulation affects the “rights and liberties of citizens”. Consequently, the Royal Decree could be in breach of the Spanish Constitution, and annulled by the
Constitutional Court. Usual bank practices The banks have been assuming the expenses imposed by judges in their mortgages, after the Supreme Court’s various rulings. But they refused to accept the judgements that do not attribute such charges to them, even though they usually accept the costs of management, registration and part of notary expenses. Yet not every bank accepts them; some simply share them with the client. But all the banks have been unanimous in rejecting expenses related to Stamp Duty, so we’ll have to see what happens in the future. The banks could even attack the Royal Decree for being in breach of the Law. Mariano Zunino, is a lawyer registered at the Tenerife Bar Association. Floor-clause claims Barcelona basilica never overloading courts had building permission SPAIN’S judicial system simply cannot cope with the hundreds of thousands of Clausula Suelo (floor clause) cases being brought before the courts. Despite 54 specialised courts being set up across Spain, with at least one in every province, the sheer onslaught of cases is proving overwhelming. Some 260,000 cases have been filed so far, but only just under 52,000 have been concluded, which is a mere 20%. Many victims claim they have waited up to a year for their banks to admit they have a case. And the situation isn’t helped by the banks themselves, which appear to be challenging every ruling, despite losing 97% of cases. Lenders are creating a second bottleneck of appeal cases, which is “unjustifiably hobbling the system with an artificial litigiousness, that could easily be avoided, and which is consuming huge amounts of public resources”, according to Miguel Pasqual de Riquelme, head of Murcia’s High Court. As thousands of families continue to seek justice, it is important to remember how they found themselves locked into dodgy mortgage contracts. Floor clauses, which were often written-in, secretly,
imposed a minimum-interest rate on floating-rate mortgages, by setting a limit on how far they could fall, in tandem with the benchmark rate. In practice, this meant that Spanish mortgage-buyers did not profit, fully, from the record-low interest rates enjoyed by Spain for several years. The clauses were ruled illegal by the Spanish high court in 2013. But it has taken some families up to 10 years to get their money back, or even get their case admitted to court. But if you want to avoid such situations, the answer is simple: hire a mortgage broker! The Finance Bureau, which has established links with the biggest lenders, acts as a go-between for the client and the bank. But, crucially, the broker, who is not connected to the bank, works to find the buyer the best deal available. Brokers also highlight any hidden fees, or compulsory add-ons, tucked away in the small print, because it is important to know exactly what is attached to your mortgage. When it comes to selecting a mortgage, you have one shot to get it right, literally. But hiring a broker, when necessary, is a small price to pay for peace of mind, and a fair contract, which is totally legal.
THE iconic Sagrada Familia basilica, in Barcelona, has agreed to pay 36m euros to authorities, having been under construction for more than 130 years, without a building permit! Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi’s famous building has actually been in the process of being built for 136 years. But it has had no official oversight or permit, from the local council or regional government. Also, the cathedral is not listed in the property registry, and, since 1995, has been marked only as an empty plot, belonging to the diocese of Barcelona, according to Spanish newspaper El Pais. In 2015, the construction board and Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau began negotiating to regulate the building and licence payments. Over the next decade, the basilica’s money will fund improvements to public transport and access to
the monument, as well as assisting the local neighbourhood. The Mayor said that, by next year, its status should become regularised. “Today, the Sagrada Familia and Barcelona City Council signed an agreement to begin the procedures to obtain the works licence of the Antoni Gaudi project,” the basilica’s Twitter account posted. El Pais reports that the
lack of oversight has seen some building anomalies, including the eight columns, which were found to have been built up to 50cm across the pavement in 2007. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is scheduled to be completed in 2026, exactly 100 years after the death of its architect. It attracts 4.5 million annual visitors, which is an average of 12,000 people daily.

MORE and more families are being caught by the UK inheritance-tax net. Official figures, released by HM Revenue and Customs, at the end of July, confirm that the UK government received £5.2 billion in inheritance-tax payments for the 2017/18 tax year - the highest ever. Inheritance tax (IHT) receipts have been steadily increasing since 2009/10, by an average of 10% a
16th November - 22nd November 2018
Another record year for UK inheritance tax year. The average bill actually reduced by £2,000 between 2014/15 and 2016/17, but more estates are now paying it, so more families are losing out on some of their inheritance. Figures released by the Treasury with the November 2017 budget revealed that it expects IHT receipts to rise to £6.5 billion, by 2022. Frozen nil-rate band One key reason why more families are paying inheritance tax is rising property values. At the same time, the IHT nil-rate band has been frozen at £325,000
since 2009. The annual exemption for lifetime gifts has been frozen at £3,000 for a little longer - since 1981! An additional residential nil-rate band (RNRB) came into effect last year, but has yet to affect the figures. More tax from nondomiciles Reforms to the nondomicile rules could also help increase the government's IHT earnings. Since April 2017, it now takes four years to lose your UK domicile of origin, after moving permanently abroad and adopting a domicile of choice in
your new country. Foreign-born, UK residents are now deemed to be UK domiciled after living in the UK for 15 out of the last 20 tax years. Also, prior to April 2017, inheritance tax would not generally apply to UK residential property owned through a corporate structure, which, in turn, was owned by a non-domicile, known as an “enveloped dwelling”. Now, regardless of how it is owned, all UK residential property is subject to inheritance tax The residential nil-rate
band (RNRB) From April 2017, a new “family-home” allowance is added to the standard £325,000 nil-rate band. This is being introduced, gradually, as follows: * £100,000 for 2017/18 * £125,000 for 2018/19 * £150,000 for 2019/20 * £175,000 in 2020/21 Thereafter, it will increase in line with the Consumer Price Index. Like the standard allowance, any unused amount can be transferred to your spouse. This will make a total, potential threshold for a couple of £1 million, in 2020. There are limitations, though: * The RNRB only applies to property inherited by direct descendants * It must have been your main home at some stage * Only one property can qualify * The property must be passed directly to your children/ grandchildren, so the allowance does not apply to property owned within many types of trusts * A limit is imposed, so higher-value properties do not benefit While any reform which reduces the IHT tax bill for our heirs is
very welcome, this one has been criticised for being too complex, and some families may be missing, out as a result. Around one-in-20 families currently pays inheritance tax, but this is expected to increase to one-in-10, in future. Since liability rests on domicile rather than residence, being an expatriate does not automatically protect you. Now is the time to take action to protect your family. Police put a damper on paedophile gang NATIONAL POLICE, who have arrested 11 members of a gang, are now investigating a further six members, believed to be involved in the possession of child pornography images. These were developed in 14 Spanish provinces, including Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, and, thanks to an investigation that started in the Cadiz town of Algeciras, searches were made in Tenerife, A Coruña, Alava, Alicante, Barcelona,
Castellon, Cuenca, Girona, Leon, Madrid, Santander, San Sebastian, Seville and Valencia. Gang members had received images, announcing that on a specific date, there would be access to a link, redirected to a virtual storage platform, from where they could obtain and share images of paedophile content. As a result of the investigation, police identified the virtual storage platform, where these images would have been published. And they were able to block a total of 6,000 international useraccounts.

Atka Bay in Antarctica is the scene of the greatest story of hardship and teamwork in nature. As the coldest and cruellest winter approaches and the sea turns to ice, every animal on land flees. But thousands of Emperor Penguins emerge from the waves and march inland across the barren wastelands, finally gathering together in one of the world’s greatest animal colonies. Presenter Tom Service is joined by Professor of History Amanda Vickery to unearth the fascinating story behind the life-long friendship between Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst, two composers whose music is often credited with birthing the so-called ‘English Sound’ which emerged in the first half of the 20th century. Tom and Amanda retrace the trips Vaughan Williams and Holst took across the country to discover how various influences, including works by Renaissance masters and folk music, imbued their music with the ‘English Sound’ we recognise today. The BBC Concert Orchestra performs excerpts of both composers’ music, illustrating the story.

The Little Drummer Girl BBC1, 21.00
In London, Kurtz’s (Michael Shannon) team prepare for the next stage of the operation as Charlie (Florence Pugh) waits and wonders if Michel’s (Amir Khoury) people will make contact. Becker (Alexander Skarsgard) finds Charlie in a state of tortured limbo and teaches her to shoot a pistol, as Michel would have done. He tells Charlie about Michel’s older brother Khalil (Charif Ghattas), explaining that Michel only tells a trusted few about his elusive brother and leader among their people. When Charlie returns from a performance with her theatre troupe she finds a note left by Michel’s team, making contact. Michel’s Swiss lawyer, Anton Mesterbein, arrives and demands Charlie come with him to a remote cottage, where she is greeted by Helga, an unhinged radical. Helga (Katharina Schuttler) and Mesterbein (Jeff Wilbusch) interrogate Charlie to test whether she and her affair with Michel are genuine. Charlie’s performance must now hold up under intense pressure. When Helga reveals to Charlie that Michel has been found dead, Charlie almost falters but manages to mask her horror that she is now complicit in a murder. She inwardly fumes that Becker has kept this from her. Charlie’s knowledge of Khalil helps her convince Helga that her relationship with Michel was real. As Charlie descends deeper into the rabbit hole, she feels torn about the choice she’s being asked to make and the human cost of Kurtz’s operation. Kurtz tries to convince Charlie that her commitment is for the greater good and she is the lynchpin that will take them to the targets they have been hunting for years. Charlie’s decision to cross the point of no return will ultimately depend on Becker’s ability to persuade her, but her choice is complicated when she and Becker finally succumb to the attraction they feel for one another. Will Charlie part with Becker to join Michel’s people as a spy, or stop short before it is too late?

This week, a new group of famous faces go toe-to-toe to test their general knowledge skills in a variety of entertaining trivia-based games. Every day this week the celebrity contestants - comedian Lolly Adefope, journalist and presenter Dan Walker, presenter Sarah Greene and comedian Miles Jupp - take on a series of challenging quiz games selected by the host, teatime quiz legend, Richard Osman. A daily winner will be declared following a quick-fire round at the end of each show, and the scores are then tallied across the week resulting in an overall champion being crowned on Friday. Will the winning stars opt for the much coveted House of Games dartboard, or instead go for the must-have branded dressing gown? Fun, witty, and full of surprises, Richard’s cross-examination of the celebs over the course of a week provides an entertaining watch for all the family as the level of competitiveness and camaraderie grows. And of course, this warm, feel-good quiz is perfect for playing along with at home. Richard Osman’s House of Games is made by Remarkable. Executive producers are Tamara Gilder and Richard Hague, and the Series Producer is Stephen Lovelock.

New Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs e c i cho ITV1, 20.00
In episode four Paul meets a six-month-old puppy named Buddy in Battersea’s lost and found area. Buddy is a healthy-looking golden retriever, a breed rarely seen at Battersea, who has been found tied to a railing outside. His registered owners are identified by a microchip and Paul leaves them a voicemail message to let them know he is at Battersea. But after seven days there is still no response, so Paul gets stuck in with Buddy’s obedience training, to help him find a new home. Meanwhile, at the Old Windsor site, Paul meets a Bedlington terrier pup called Humphrey who has arrived in a bad way, with every skin condition under the sun including ringworm. Humphrey is red raw from itching and highly contagious, so Paul dons full protective clothing to give him a sympathetic cuddle, in spite of the deeply unpleasant smell caused by the bacterial infection on his skin.

THE Spanish Cabinet has approved legal changes to make lenders, rather than borrowers, pay a controversial tax on home purchases, and to ensure that banks cannot deduct this cost on their tax returns. The decree comes a day after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of the Socialist Party (PSOE), announced measures to guarantee that “Spaniards will never again pay this tax”. The move ensures that the Supreme Court’s recent decision to make clients pay the fee has been overridden, to the delight of new home-buyers. At a news conference following the Cabinet meeting, Finance Minister María Jesús Montero said that the fast-track reforms were justified, because of the “confusion” created by the Supreme Court, which has been issuing contradictory decisions regarding who should pay the Actos Jurídicos Documentados (AJD) tax. The decree will be published today (Friday) in the Official Gazette, and activated tomorrow, Mortgages signed from then on will

Cannabis-growers are facing the music now!
A GANG of cannabis dealers played classical music to their plants to help them grow, according to Alicante police. Five men of Swedish, German and Spanish nationality, aged between 35 and 55, have been arrested in the towns of Elche, San Miguel de Salinas and Almoradí, after huge plantations in rented homes and warehouses were uncovered. At least 2,000 shrubs were growing in the multiple properties rented by the suspects, at a total cost of 3,000 euros a month, and 33 kilos of hash, already bagged up for sale, were seized. Classical music was played 24 hours a day to the plants on a nonstop automatic loop,
in a bid to help them grow more quickly, and produce a betterquality crop! Police say the street value of the existing drugs, and of the total substance the plants would have yielded, was about 80,000 euros per crop… and the gang planted and harvested four crops a year! Another 10 grams of cocaine were confiscated, along with 11,000 euros in cash, four top-of-the-range cars and two valuable motorbikes. The Swedish ringleader, who lives in a million-euro luxury villa in Elche, is believed to be wanted for previous offences relating to drug-dealing and money-laundering.
announcing a plenary meeting to discuss it. After deliberating for two days, 28 justices last Tuesday voted, 15 to 13, that clients must pay the duty after all. The decision drew widespread criticism from politicians, unions,
consumer groups and the public alike. But the Finance Minister said the Government was not eliminating the AJD tax altogether, as the opposition Popular Party (PP) has suggested doing, because it represented around two billion euros in

annual revenue for regional authorities. Those who want to axe the levy, she said, should offer alternative resources to fund public healthcare, education and disability benefits, or else it should be presumed. When asked how the Government would ensure that lenders could not pass the added cost of the AJD tax on to their clients, through more expensive mortgages, Ms Montero said: “The Government expects the banks to behave according to market rules, where there is competition.” She added: “In any case, the Authority to Defend Bank Clients, which the Economy Minister will introduce later on, will watch over the rights of consumers to ensure there are no abusive clauses,” alluding to a watchdog agency the Government wants to create. The Spanish Parliament is already working on transposing the EU’s mortgage credit directive, although talks are at a standstill because of varying, political positions regarding who should bear the costs of home loans. The Government is trying to avoid sanctions from Brussels, for having failed to communicate the transposition measures by the established deadline.
Woman sold daughter’s nude photos to strangers A PROVINCIAL court in Spain jailed a 44-year-old mother for 5½ years, for corrupting a minor, along with child abandonment, after selling nude photos of her teenage daughter to strangers. The Provincial Court of Sevilla heard that the mother, from Arboleas, Almeria, originally, took pictures of her youngest daughter, now aged 15, in short skirts, heels, makeup, bathing suits and completely nude. She posed, provocatively, each time, and the indecent snaps were uploaded by the mother to a dating portal, accessible only
by payment. But the court acquitted a 52-year-old man of corruption of a minor, after he had been accused of buying the photographic materials of the young girl. The court also heard that the youngster was exposed to video conferencing in 2014 and 2015, during which she interacted with clients, and, occasionally, undressed. In 2015, the acquitted buyer, reportedly, met face to face with the young girl, to hand over to her between “100-1,000 euros”. He was said to have told her he was in love with the young girl,
proposing that she return to Madrid with him. The court judged that there was “no doubt” the accused mother, said to be extremely poor, had committed the crime of abandonment. It also maintained that she had neglected her parental duties, and declared the case to
be “a real situation of abandonment, disregarding her daughter, and doing an absolute abandonment of her functions as a mother”. The defence has since claimed it will appeal against the judgement, citing that the court failed to take into account her “painful situation of economic indigence”.

Brit tourist locked up after cops’ huge gaffe A BRITISH holiday-maker has spoken of his eight-day ordeal in a Spanish jail, after being mistaken for an escaped convict.
Eddie Gossage, a 68-year-old from Merseyside. recalled how he was handcuffed in his Magaluf hotel room, in Mallorca, and then thrown into a Palma prison cell when police thought, incorrectly, that he was British fugitive Michael David Phillips. Mr Gossage was first questioned, alongside his wife, Brenda, by border patrol guards at Palma Airport, on the Balearic island. The pair were then allowed to leave the airport and continue to their Magaluf hotel. But police later arrived at Mr Gossage’s hotel room and ordered him to “get dressed”, before handcuffing and hauling him off to prison. He was unaware that his identity had been stolen by 63-year-old escaped convict Phillips, and was being used as an alias by the drug lord. Mr
Gossage said Spanish police officers photographed and fingerprinted him, and he was told that he featured on Interpol’s Most-Wanted list. In court the following day, he denied allegations that he was the escaped convict, saying: “No, I’m Edward Gossage.” His daughters, Amanda and Jenny, flew out to join their distraught mother during the ordeal, but were only able to see their incarcerated father through a glass partition. After eight days behind bars, the Briton was released when the National Crime Agency (NCA), the body which issued the European arrest warrant for Phillips’ capture, was alerted by the British consulate to Mr Gossage’s dubious arrest. Mr Gossage says he has suffered from traumatic flashbacks since returning home to Kirkby, on Merseyside, while the NCA said Mr Gossage’s wrongful arrest was the fault of Spanish police. Meanwhile, Michael David Phillips remains a fugitive on Interpol’s most wanted list.
Spanish company pays 48m euros for illegal arms deals with Saudis
DEFEX, the state-owned company, is being investigated by the Spanish High Court for paying illegal commissions to Saudi Arabian officials, in exchange for weapons’ contracts. The probe, into the sale of defence equipment to Saudi Arabia, has uncovered bribes and illegal commissions paid for 11 contracts, worth a total of 48m euros, between 2005 and 2013. Eight of those deals were for different types of ammunition, while the other three involved the delivery of replacement parts for the Saudi army’s AMX-30 battle tanks. Five more suspect contracts, signed between 1992 and 2004, have been left out of the investigation, because they are past the statute of limitations. Defex, which is 51% state-owned through the holding company SEPI (the other 49% is controlled by private arms companies), has been under scrutiny since 2014, when the Civil Guard uncovered a suspect sale of police equipment to Angola involving heavily padded invoices; the extra money was allegedly shared out among government workers in the African country, Spanish company execs and their intermediaries. The scandal brought down Defex, which is currently in liquidation. Its top officials – the former president José Ignacio Encinas and ex-chief of operations Ángel María Larumbe – are under investigation for keeping up “a systematic criminal behaviour pattern” for over two decades, according to Judge José de la Mata. Digging deeper, investigators found irregularities in the sale of defence
equipment to other countries, including Saudi Arabia. As a public company, Defex was able to secure the necessary permits to export arms and ammunition. Later, through the creation of a “complex constellation” of companies – as defined by Swiss authorities who were queried for information by the High Court – Defex paid illegal commissions in exchange for no apparent commercial service to individuals with good connections to Saudi authorities, and also to Defex executives. This web of companies was allegedly created in Luxembourg by Beatriz García Paesa, niece of Francisco Paesa, a notorious former spy who did jail time in Switzerland for fraud, in the late 1970s. The Saudi Arabia probe began in 2015 and first targeted 16 operations made between 1992 and 2014, Spanish and Swiss legal documents show. The first five were ruled out because of the statute of limitations, and the Civil Guard focused on the remaining transactions. Judge De la Mata has nearly concluded his inquiry, and is awaiting the last reports from the Civil Guard. The investigation has shed light, among other things, on a company based in the Cayman Islands, and a payment of 7.6 million euros through Swiss accounts to a Saudi company for fake services. Swiss authorities have blocked at least four bank accounts in connection with these financial transactions. Other individuals under investigation include former Defex executive Álvaro Cervera and a businessman named Charles Ques.

Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant
The T-bone steak was bigger than the plate! IF you want to sample typical Canarian cuisine, or even a huge rack of ribs, you must visit the exquisite Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant in Valle San Lorenzo. It is known affectionately as The Courtyard by the British community, and the food is spectacular. The spacious premises do, indeed, feature a courtyard with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful, inside restaurant. This is a veritable oasis, tucked away down a tiny, side street of Valle San Lorenzo, behind the catholic church. If you’re coming from the Los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow your nose until you
come across it, on the right, complete with car park. Las Mozas has been there for 15 years, so, if you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there at least once. If not, you don’t realise what you’re missing! Some friends, who are happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal, two or three times a year. And guess where they go? And guess what they always have? Ribs! And no wonder! It was a lovely evening, so we chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area
(where they allow smoking), complete with real, hanging plants, and a whole host of long, trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups. On colder evenings, lesshardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multi-lingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. To be fair, if you’re vegetarian, it’s not the place for you, although they will cater for you, if necessary. Hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red,
together with the not-tobe-missed, home-made Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) were brought to the table. To begin, we shared a reasonably-priced dish of garlic prawns, which were fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge, mixed salad. Las Mozas is famed for its ribs, but we felt like breaking with tradition. So, for the main event, I chose beefsteak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the meltin-your-mouth Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return, time after time. My work colleague chose the T-bone steak, which was bigger than the plate itself. But he made good progress tucking into it, until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply had
no room left for dessert, but enjoyed two cups of their tasty coffee, instead. All in all, we had a superb evening. It is spotlessly clean, you get attentive, excellent service, and the main reason you go there is for the food, which is spoton. To reserve a table, call 922 765 597. The restaurant now opens for lunch, and goes straight through to the evening, for dinner. It’s not that long since they closed for a siesta and re-opened in the evening, which suggests that business, as it should be there, is booming! Las Mozas is open six days a week, and is closed on Mondays. There is ample car-parking, and they are now taking bookings for Christmas parties, for which they have a set menu. For more information check out their website www. eralasmozas.com - or find them on Facebook.

Lemon water so appealing!
By Val Sainsbury MANY restaurants serve lemon water, routinely, and some people start their day with it, instead of coffee or tea. The health benefits of lemon water are widely known.
It promotes hydration Generally, the recommended intake for water is 91-125 ounces, including water from food and drinks. Water is the best beverage for hydration, but some people don't like the taste of it on its own, so they add flavours, which may help them to drink more. It's a good source of Vitamin C Citrus fruits, like lemons, are high in Vitamin C, and
Âź cup raw lemon juice provides about 23.6 grams of this vitamin.. That's over 30% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA). Vitamin C may reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, and lower blood pressure. It may also help prevent, or limit, the duration of the common cold, in some people. It improves your skin quality Vitamin C found in lemons may help reduce skin wrinkling. A study concluded that people who consumed more Vitamin C have less risk of wrinkled and dry skin. How water improves skin is controversial, but one thing is certain. If your skin loses moisture, it becomes dry and wrinkle-prone. Whether it's better to apply moisturiser to the skin, or drink more water, isn't clear, but it's recommended that we drink at least eight glasses of water daily to stay hydrated, and rid the skin of toxins.
It aids digestion Some people drink lemon water as a daily, morning laxative to help prevent constipation. Drinking warm or hot lemon water when you wake up may help get your digestive system moving. It freshens breath Have you ever rubbed a lemon on your hands to remove a powerful smell? It's thought to neutralise odours. The same folk remedy may apply to bad breath, caused by eating foods with strong smells like garlic, onions or fish. Keep your breath sweeter by drinking a glass of lemon
water after meals, and first thing in the morning. Lemon is thought to stimulate saliva, and water helps prevent a dry mouth, which leads to bad breath caused by excess bacteria growth. It helps prevent kidney stones The citric acid in lemons may help prevent calcium kidney stones. Increase citric acid intake to decrease your risk of getting new calcium stones. Drinking lemon water not only helps you get more citric acid, but also the water you need to prevent stones. Drinking ½ cup of lemon juice provides the same amount of citric acid you'd find in prescription varieties. How to make lemon water In order to reap any health benefits of lemon water, you need drink it consistently, and you need more than just a single wedge of lemon in your mug. When making lemon water, always use fresh lemons, and not artificial lemon from
a bottle. To make lemon water, squeeze half a lemon into eight ounces of boiling, warm or cold water. To make the drink as healthy as possible, use filtered water and organic lemons. Infuse flavour to lemon water by adding: * a few springs of mint * a teaspoon of maple syrup or raw honey * a slice of fresh ginger * a dash of cinnamon You can also add slices of other fresh citrus fruits such as limes and oranges, or cucumber slices. Having lemon ice cubes on hand is a great way to quickly add lemon to your water. Simply squeeze fresh lemon juice into ice-cube trays and freeze. Drop a few cubes into a glass of cold or hot water, as needed. Start your morning with a mug of warm lemon water, and keep a pitcher of water infused with a few sliced, whole lemons in your refrigerator, to drink throughout the day.

Grahame’s birthday party raises 1,656 euros for kids
LIZ Montague, who runs children’s charity Helping Hands, takes great pleasure in helping underprivileged kids and their parents. “When you have the privilege of meeting so many kind, generous people; it really is something else,” she said. But, last Saturday, she experienced the other side of the coin. “I was invited to meet Grahame and some of his friends at a special birthday party,” she said. “They were there, at the Templete Restaurant, in El Medano, for his 70th birthday. More than 70 of
his friends were there to help him celebrate, and what a night it was! “The restaurant prepared a scrumptious meal and a grand raffle, arranged by Grahame, who donated the proceeds of what was raised to our charity. “I was absolutely blown away by his generous act, especially as the huge sum of 1,656.43 euros was raised. How amazing was that?” Liz added: “Grahame’s intention was to give something for his birthday to less-fortunate children here in Tenerife, and he certainly achieved his goal. “My thanks to him, and all his lovely El Medano friends.”

Meet happy Sally!
THIS lovely girl is Sally. She is an American Staffie, and is approximately eight years old. She was found abandoned in a finca in the North of the island, where she was tied up and malnourished, and covered in bites and cuts. Despite this, she’s an adorable bundle of fun, with a beautiful temperament.
16th November - 22nd November 2018
She loves people, children, other dogs and cats. She adores wáter, and swimming in the sea. She would make a wonderful pet as she is so full of love. Can you help by fostering or adopting her? Please contact Paula 667 621 875 (English), or Elaine 667 621 727 (Spanish), to arrange a meeting.
Another sad situation RECENTLY, about 20 cats were thrown onto the street in Granadilla, after their deceased owner's property was sold. It's on a busy road, and many have already been run over and killed. We now have six in our care. We are aware of at least another four, which we will catch next week. These cats are very tame and in excellent condition, but they are scared and traumatised. If you could open your heart and adopt one of them, that would be much appreciated. Otherwise, if you donate towards neutering, food etc., that would be gratefully received. The cats have been tested, and, so far, are leukaemia negative. Thank you so much for your continued support. Please send donations via PayPal - info@cats-welfaretenerife.com On a brighter note ... Meet these gorgeous babies (pictured) - one female and two males. They are about 8-10 weeks old, and have been wormed and deflead. They have also had their first injections. They are a little shy, but are improving every day. If you would like to meet them, please send us a private Facebook message. All kittens go for a week's trial, in your home. Adoptions We have lots of other adorable kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, forever homes! As well as an abundance of kittens, we have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone's sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook. Alternatively, ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. As previously mentioned, all cats go for a week's trial, in your home. Wanted! We urgently require goodquality ladies' clothes for our shop in San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). Please drop them in, or ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he
will collect them from you. We are open seven days a week, from 10am-6pm. For the fuller figure! Somebody has kindly donated lots of plus-size clothes, 22- 28, in excellent condition. The brands included are Debenhams, Simply B, Yours, Asos and Ann Harvey, plus many more. We know it's difficult to find nice, larger clothes, here in Tenerife, so please come along to the shop, and
grab a bargain. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Remembrance Sunday
Live Arico News
Remembering 100 years of saviours!
By Kelly (Poppy Appeal organiser) LAST Sunday’s Remembrance Service, organised on behalf of the Royal British Legion’s South Tenerife branch, was held, as usual, at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio. We had an excellent attendance, comprising some 500 people from many nationalities, all remembering those from the past, and those who had passed away this year… servicemen and women, young and old, who had fought, so that we might have the freedom to live our lives as we would like. Thanks go to Rita and Nellie, and their Westhaven Bay staff, for allowing us the use of their complex for this memorable event, as well as their help and hard work on the day. Also, a big thanks to Phil Littlejohn for leading this service, along with his team of readers, musicians and collectors. Wreaths were laid on behalf of all the services, and we were honoured by the presence of Helen Keating MBE, British Vice-Consul for Tenerife. Other services, or Acts of Remembrance, were wellattended in Golf del Sur, Costa del Silencio, Los Cristianos, Las Americas, Callao Salvaje and Los Gigantes. Following the Westhaven Bay service, an afternoon event was held at The Albatros, in Costa del Silencio.

Many thanks to Don and his staff and helpers, for making this a lovely event, which raised 430 euros through a raffle, and the auction of a superb Christmas cake. Thanks, also, to the entertainers, who gave up some of their free time for everybody’s enjoyment. A donation was also received from Arona, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club for this year’s Poppy Appeal. There was also a coffee-andcake afternoon at Scooters Bar, in Costa del Silencio, and both venues were wellsupported by customers, who enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie. As the Canarian Weekly goes
to press, the collecting tins for this year’s Poppy Appeal are being gathered together by helpers. And when these have been counted, the sum raised this year will be made public. With thanks to all those who helped, and those who gave generously.

Love a Podenco! THE beautiful Canarian Podencos make lovely pets. They are widelyused on the island for hunting or breeding, and are often subjected to awful lives. They are kept on chains or in squalid conditions, and many are underfed, in the belief that they hunt better. CD Tenerife
Positives for Tenerife in a well-fought draw TENERIFE competed but did not win… that’s the best way of summarising a good draw against an Albacete side who were solid at the back, didn’t give the ball away, and created chances, when in possession. Coach Oltra said before the match that CDT had a great attitude and could play good football, but needed to compete more. And this didn’t fall on deaf ears as his players had more possession, more shots and more corners, yet couldn’t break down the top-five team. Oltra gave a new look to Tenerife by going with a 4-42 formation, which left Carlos Ruiz on the bench, Nano and Malbasic in attack, and Acosta out on the left when defending to cover Albacete’s Tejero and Susaeta. With these line-ups, the game was always balanced, but lacked rhythm. Milla and Malbasic were first to have chances, but Dani was the most indemand goalkeeper. Eugerni’s shot from 18 yards, in front of the goal after 10 minutes, was tipped
CD Tenerife 0 Albacete 0
around his right post by Dani, and he was then tested by Olivera, nine minutes later. The visitors had the best of the action in the middle, and, after a precise pass through by Susaeta, Ortuño’s header missed by inches. For the rest of the half, Jon Erice and Febas controlled the game for Al-
bacete, who never seemed in danger, apart from a last chance, right before the break, which Milla put just over the bar. Oltra made a couple of changes in the second half,
introducing a more attacking line-up with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Tyrone up front and Malbasic behind him, making a trio with Joao and Naranjo. It seemed to work because
Tenerife applied great pressure, with 15 minutes of remarkable football, and wide balls from the wings creating several chances. Malbasic had three, but neither he, Alberto nor Jorge could hit the target. Albacete hit back with an excellent move, and Zozulia had a point-blank header saved superbly by Dani, and Gentiletti was unable to round it off. From this point, the match remained equal until the final minute, when the visitors hit again. And, this time, the post saved Tenerife after a brilliant effort from Rey Manaj. All in all, it was an exciting, well-fought 0-0, which neither team deserved to lose. Again, there were more positives from Oltra and his men in the tactics and attitude, with which they approached the match. They will surely be confident this weekend, away to Rayo Majadohonda, who are just a couple of places and a couple of points above them.
Ranieri gets new chance of glory
FULHAM have appointed Claudio Ranieri as manager, while, simultaneously, announcing that previous incumbent Slavisa Jokanovic has been sacked.
In a highly-unusual move, Fulham made the double announcement with a post on the club website, on Wednesday morning. Ranieri’s last job in England saw him lead Leicester City to the Premier League title, sensationally, and he said of his return to the Premier League: “It is an honour to accept Mr Shahid Khan’s invitation and opportunity to lead Fulham, a fantastic club with tradition and
history. “The objective at Fulham should never be to merely survive in the Premier League. We must, at all times, be a difficult opponent, and should expect to succeed. This Fulham squad have exceptional talent, which is contrary to their position in the table.
“And I know this team are very capable of better performances, which we will work on straight away, as we prepare for Southampton at The Cottage.” Ranieri’s first job in charge will be that home match against the Saints, next Saturday (24th Nov).

Terry’s maximum pressie! SUTERS 20:30 Crew started on 1,001, and, despite giving Naughty Nautas a 440-point start, they enjoyed a straightforward 6-1 win, to progress to the next round. Gaffers travelled to Sandys, giving a 120 start, but with birthday boy Terry hitting a maximum, they managed a 5-2 win. The Pub welcomed The Loch-In Bullseyes, and made light work of the 220-point deficit to claim a 6-1 result. But Pas O Na-
das ‘A’ went to Emerald Lounge, 300 points behind, and were made to work hard, until, eventually, they came away 4-3 winners, with Wattie’s 180 the evening’s highlight. Picasso’s Per hit a 180 at Sundowners, but the home side’s 200-point advantage proved to be crucial, as they ran out 5-2 winners. Ourplace Playgirls, hosting Scooters ‘A’, held a 380-point advantage, and, despite some excellent darts from Ed and Duncan, the visitors could not make inroads in a match ending 6-1 to the girls.

Las Chafiras Sports Centre
El Fraile football ground Sports centre to have major renovation upgrade
EL Fraile will have a football field with fully renovated facilities, once the comprehensive, modernisation works at Dionisio González are completed. Arona Council has put the works out to tender this week under the #AronaAvanza programme, promoted by Mayor José Julián Mena. It has boosted the municipality’s investment, in the first half of 2018, to the same level as the whole of last year, and the total sum of the previous three. The Dionisio González complex, home of UD Ibarra, has already had several improvements, with the replacement of its artificial turf. This tender, which pushes the investment to 1.1m euros, will also benefit many of the facilities that have become obsolete, after several years without improvements. The project, drafted after a study by the architect and engineering company Makin Molowny Portela, includes
both the improvement and expansion of changing rooms for equipment and storage space, as well as the gym, laundry, canteen and toilets, plus an adapted bathroom. The project also includes a new health-care and massage room, a media room and a covering on the main stand, as well as the incorporation of solar panels, and the renewal of the club’s electrical installation. Once this is completed, the Council will undertake other work there, such as the placement of seats and markers. Mayor Mena said: “The City Council of Arona, through the board of sports, has made a very important investment in the last three
years, in the modernisation of our local facilities, since we are a municipality with a great sports base. “We want to give impetus to this, so that the teams and fans of Arona see real, tangible support from their Council, investing in quality facilities.” Mena added: “Among these investments are the replacement of artificial pitches, and the installation of a public-address system and seats, as well as reforms like this one and that of the Valle San Lorenzo football field. “There, we have also given a new impetus to the sports hall’s works, as well as the blueprint for the Cabo Blanco sports centre, where we will continue working in the coming months.”
SAN Miguel de Abona Council has begun improvements to Las Chafiras sports centre, promoted by the Department of General Services. And the first stage, for safety’s sake, focuses on the renovation of the perimeter fence, which has deteriorated. San Miguel Mayor Arturo González Hernández, who is backing the initiative, said: “This sports centre has a large number of users, so it is necessary to carry out many necessary actions to ensure their safety, and have facilities of a high standard for their leisure.”
