Hotel’s golden award for silver anniversary ADEJE Council has awarded the borough’s Gold Medal to the Hotel Bahía del Duque, which has celebrated its 25-year anniversary, after opening in 1993. The presentation, made by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, was accepted on behalf of the hotel by group president Francisco Javier Zamorano. Also present were the current director of the Cristina de Juan hotel, along with the seven workers attached to the hotel, since it opened. The decision to construct a 5-star, luxury hotel, in what was a period of economic uncertainty in the region, was seen as a brave one. It was a risk, but one which marked a confidence in Adeje’s tourism sector, and in the

Canary Islands in general. Mayor Rodríguez Fraga, presenting the award, said: “The hotel’s construction and philosophy marks a ‘before and after’, not just for our borough, but for the sector as a whole, because it was our entry into the top level of tourism, the introduction of a new brand where the main goal was quality, something we have striven for in the 25 years since.” He also congratulated all the workers who have, over the years, contributed to the success of the hotel, and he included the directors and owners, saying: “They have worked consistently to introduce new tourism concepts, and created a school for staff training… to work in the Bahía del Duque has always been seen within the sector as a mark of professionalism, and ensuring things are done properly.” Group President Javier Zamorano said it was an

honour for the hotel to receive the award, adding: “When we began, 25 years ago, the idea was to create a destination which would stand out for its qualities of excellence. “And, after a lot of work, dedication and perseverance, we have created a product that is synonymous with luxury, quality and personalisation, in a unique setting, without losing those traditional values that make us different. “Thanks, too, to the institutions and public administrations, such as Adeje Council, who have supported us in every way possible.” The hotel, designed by architect Andrés Piñeiro, opened with 346 rooms, including 57 suites, and 40 villas, and was an excellent reflection of Canarian architecture. It is acknowledged as the first luxury hotel to open in the Canary Islands, and was also innovative in offering private villas with personalised, steward services, as well as hotel rooms. With 600 employees, it boasts five pools, squash, padel and tennis courts, gyms, a lake, the Bahía Wellness Retreat and a biosphere with 63,000sq/m of tropical and subtropical vegetation. From its inception, it was seen as a force to improve the local economy in the South of Tenerife. And, over the years, it has become an excellent resource for employment, given the ongoing staff training. And, since 1993, many other hotels have copied the style,

to enhance the South’s luxury offer. The Bahía del Duque is, today, a recognised standard bearer for good practice in the luxuryhotel industry, and experts have, consistently, named it as one of the best establishments

of its kind in Europe. It has also won numerous prizes over the years, including the 2011 Conde Nast Johansen “best hotel in the world”, with various other installations also being recognised internationally for their quality.

‘Crime’ fraudster is nailed by police

NATIONAL Police officers, in Gran Canaria’s San Bartolomé de Tirajan, have arrested a 62-year-old British man for lying about being the victim of a crime. The man had served a denuncia, falsely, that while he was out shopping in the well-known Playa del Ingles commercial centre, four young people gave him a beating that left him unconscious. When he awoke, officers were told, he found that all his belongings and purchases had been stolen, including a watch, a gold chain, a leather wallet, a mobile phone, various items of clothing, perfumes, and money in cash, with a total value adding up to 3,000 euros.

The events were triggered by the man himself, who went to the police to make the complaint, but he could not provide them with any description of the four individuals. The police investigation made it easy to see that the complainant had travel insurance to cover such events. He had pretended to have been the victim of the attack, and the robbery with violence. For all these reasons, the officers arrested him. The Lawyer of the State will request that the man pay compensation to the Administration, for expenses occurred while wasting police time. He is currently awaiting trial in Mas Palomas.

Mighty waves balconies on

Cont. from Front

And one Spanish newspaper described the aftermath as being “like a war zone”. The repair bills will add up to an estimated one million euros, but, miraculously, there were no reported casualties. Yet video footage shows huge, 40ft waves reaching the thirdfloor of two seafront apartment blocks in Tacoronte’s Mesa del Mar tourist town, in the north-east. Seawater poured in through windows, and then caused more chaos by flooding back out, destroying some balconies. Mayor Alvaro Davila, who said the 65 apartments there had been evacuated, confirmed that no one had been injured in the scare, which followed the evacuation of 40 people from two buildings in Garachico, also on the island’s north-west coast. There, Emergency Services completed the evacuation after huge waves splashed into the properties, and knocked the lifts out of action. Those who could not be accommodated with relatives and friends were looked after by Red Cross personnel in the municipal sports hall.

The enormous estimate for repairs, made by City Council technicians, will embrace the damage caused to the Mesa del Mar car-parking area, the pier and beach of La Arena, as well as in El Pris, where there was “serious” damage to the municipal’s civil protection and emergency and security services. This included the destruction of their boat, and cracks in the fishing guild’s building, as well as

damage to the coastal path linking El Pris and Mesa del Mar. The incidents happened after regional government officials decreed a state of severe weather alert, as the fierce storm battered the north of Tenerife and other parts of the Canary Islands. In addition, a car was dragged into the sea and into the Jover, a natural swimming pool, in the municipality of La Laguna, and another

in Puerto de la Cruz, in the El Penitente area, but there were no injuries in either case. Javier Plata, Santa Cruz sub-delegate of the Spanish Government, visited the Mesa del Mar area, accompanied by the Mayor, who showed him the effects of the storm on the La Arena beach, and in the main parking lot. And, during the visit, both politicians listened to the demands of those residents also affected.

Days later, waves of up to 16ft made attempts to clear up the damage difficult, with more bad weather forecast. Meanwhile, in Garachico, Mayor José Heriberto Gonzále estimates that the cost to repair storm damage there has reached 865,000 euros, because the main areas hit were the port, the town, and the football pitch. But more than 30 municipal workers, plus the help provided by the municipalities

around them, as well as all the Local Police, members of the Canarian Police, Guardia Civil and Civil Protection, have worked tirelessly, removing all kinds of objects from public roads and affected businesses, to re-open the Avenida Marítima. They reached their objective rapidly, given the importance of this road, which is the obligatory passage to Isla Baja. But it is not the first time the town and

port have suffered a maritime storm with terrible consequences. On 13th January, 1987, the municipality was hammered by the sea, which resulted in two fatalities, in addition to destroying houses, streets, cars and equipment because of waves exceeding 40 metres high. Yet witnesses from that era say that what happened last weekend was even worse. The waves broke over several establishments on the Avenida Marítima, and went through walls, doors and windows, destroying everything inside. But, unlike that fateful

Tuesday in 1987, it did not take the residents by surprise, because the weather alert was given several days earlier, and all traders had closed

their establishments by Saturday afternoon, adopting the recommended security measures. They withdrew gas

bottles from outside, raised everything they had off the floor, and placed bars to barricade doors and windows.

And they nearly always do it when there’s an alert. “We are used to the sea between one, two, or three times a year, so we take the necessary precautions,” said restaurateur Tomás Pérez, owner of the Restaurante Arepera, in the Atlantic building on Avenida Marítima. The most affected businesses were those of that complex, several of its owners maintaining: “The cause of the disaster is the retaining wall, which was built to protect the football field, attached to the property, and whose turf was torn up in its entirety.” The Cabildo has

already made an amendment to the 2019 budgets, with an initial sum of 300,000 euros going to Garachico to alleviate the effects of the storm, announced President Carlos Alonso. Meanwhile, all affected are hoping for the same thing: that insurance companies will cover the damages, and that the help of the administrations does materialise and is not a shallow promise. Here in the South, waves smashed the windows of a Calleo Salvaje restaurant on Saturday night, where several people were dining, but there were no casualties.

NEWS IN BRIEF Cabbie is beaten up by Drug-dealers nicked, inside!

TWO people were arrested by the National Police for supplying drugs to an inmate at Las Palmas II penitentiary, in Gran Canaria. Officers nabbed the 45-year-old man and a woman, four years older, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, for drugtrafficking. There were making a family visit to an inmate, and, allegedly, delivered various narcotic substances. Moments after their visit, the prisoner was found to be in possession of 15 grams of hashish and three grams of cocaine. The couple were arrested by officers from the Maspalomas Police Station, and handed over to the Judicial Authority to be charged.

Women run over by car

TWO women were injured after being run over in Masca, shortly before 3pm on Monday at Km17 on the TF-436, from Buenavista to Santiago del Teide, as reported by the Emergency Co-ordinating Centre. One of the women, aged 58, had an injured leg, and the other lady, 65, bruised her chest. Medics assessed and assisted them at the scene, and took care of their transfer to health centres. One was taken to Hospiten Bellevue, and the other to the Los Silos Health Centre.

The end of a Dream

FIREFIGHTERS raced to the scene of a spectacular car

crash in the historic streets of a popular tourist town last Sunday, in the south of Spain. Emergency services were informed that a car had smashed through the pedestrian access to an underground car park in Ronda, the City of Dreams, at 7am. But it was a nightmare trying to recover the vehicle from the stairway to the Martinez Astein car park, until it was hauled out by a breakdown lorry. Local Police are investigating why the driver lost control of the vehicle. No injuries were reported, despite the spectacular crash.

Landslide causes train death

A PASSENGER died and 41 others were injured, some seriously, after a train derailed in Spain on Monday morning, after water and mud were seen in a video, cascading down the embankment. The Rodalies’ train, in Manresa-Sant Vicenc de Calders, Barcelona, came off the track at around 6.15am. Only three of the injured were transferred to hospital, for treatment, initially, after 14 firefighters, 11 ambulances and several police officers raced to the scene to attend to them, and help evacuate the other passengers. Some 150 people were on the train when a landslide, caused by recent, heavy downpours, led to the derailment after taking out the last two carriages, tweeted train company Rodalies.

TWO men and a woman, aged 18, 21 and 22, respectively, were arrested by National Police, who also indicted a 25-year-old man, for assaulting and trying to rob a taxi driver. He had taken them from the South Airport to Santa Cruz, but he had misgivings about whether they would pay the fare. He told them that if they

refused, he would take them straight back to the airport, where their journey began, At this point, the passengers became angry, and one of them applied the handbrake and stopped the car. The others started to kick and punch the driver. One of them even got out of the car, picked up a large rock and threw it at the taxi driver, causing an open wound on his head that required five stitches. During the assault, they kept demanding any money he had collected that day.

But this had been his first fare, so his assailants took his mobile phone and the keys of the taxi. The injured cabbie, shocked and hurt, called the cops to reported the assault, and National Police officers were able to identify the four alleged perpetrators, because three of them already had criminal records. The detainees are currently held in custody, awaiting trial in Santa Cruz for assault and robbery with violence.

Cabildo invests a million in toilets, and Agatha Christie CABILDO President Carlos Alonso, and Isabel Maria Oliver, Secretary of State for Tourism, have signed an agreement to invest one million euros in three Puerto de la Cruz projects, with completion set for 2020.

These works will improve the Agatha Christie Promenade (373,820 euros), after being considered a historical heritage site, and will upgrade the changing rooms and toilets of Playa Jardin (345,000 euros), as well as the urban environment (281,179 euros) for other toilets. Alonso thanked the “effort of the State to provide resources for the second

year in a row, in the municipality in the north of Tenerife, for a total investment of two million euros from last year”. Ms Oliver said: “Although the tourism sector always makes an emphasis in visitor spaces, the reforms are also important for residents, and will allow the municipality to remain a point of tourist excellence.”

New hospital struck by another obstacle

THE company responsible for installing electricity during the third phase of El Mojon hospital, Teur, has dismissed 18 workers after late payment of the October payroll and overtime demands. Yet 35% of the cabling still needs to be carried out, and Teur’s abandonment means another delay for the new South hospital, which had been promised that work would be completed by next April. The company, a subcontractor of Sacyr, and responsible for wiring electricity, tel-

ecommunications and IT of all this phase, decided to dismiss the workers they had hired (nine had left previously) with still 35% of the work left, at a cost close to two million euros. That was around 20% of the total budget awarded to Sacyr when it won the Canarian Government’s 7.9m-euros tender, with 19 months to execute it. This latest setback means that the building of the hospital’s surgical block, with four operating theatres, is threatened, in addition to an obstetric block, equipped with three delivery rooms and an operating room; two new hospitalisation facilities and other support devices for the healthcare activity, such as

new pharmacy and sterilisation services. The Teur workers had deployed more than 27km of cable since March, when work on the hospital resumed after a five-month stoppage, to demand an 10% budget increase from contractors Sacyr, because of the scarcity of materials. Now, Sacyr will have to find another electrical company, available to complete the communications work in time. Teur has arranged this week to pay the October wages, owed to the nine workers still in the company, and the payment of overtime pending, with the settlement. “It will be impossible for any company to finish it by April,” said one of the affected workers.

Couple tricked hard-up women into prostitution

NATIONAL Police have arrested a couple in Gran Canaria for, allegedly, human-trafficking and illegal immigration of women, for prostitution purposes. The man and woman are accused of trapping women, aged between 2025, who were in desperate financial need, in South American countries, mainly through social media networks. The couple then paid their expenses for moving to Spain, but later demanded much higher sums from them as debts, which is often referred to as debt bondage. They also used a fake gun to threaten them if they refused to prostitute themselves. And the accused man is also reported to have sexually

assaulted several of the women in the brothels he operated. Police investigations focus-ed on a private home in Gran Canaria’s Melenara, in Telde, where prostitution took place, and where 4,500 euros and a simulated gun were seized. Officers also carried out checks on hostess clubs and other locations across the island, within the framework of “Operation EMPACT Platform of Europol”, and police found four women, who admitted being victims of human-trafficking. The intensive probe identified the accused couple, both from Cuba, who remain in police custody, while the human-trafficking victims have been given appropriate support to ease their trauma.

Sanidad smoking ban, at concerts and sport events

SPANISH Health Minister Faustino Blanco has announced that the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare (Sanidad) plans to ban smoking at outdoor events. These include sporting events and concerts, and the ban is also extended to public and private vehicles, carrying children. During his Senate presentation of the report “Spanish legislation against tobacco: achievements and shortcomings”, he proposed a series of measures to continue the anti-tobacco battle. But the Health Minister did acknowledge that the two main anti-tobacco laws, enacted in Spain, have

shown “significant results” in reducing the number of smokers. He also stressed that there should be more smoke-free spaces, along with co-ordinated plans in the National Health System to fight tobacco, which is Spain’s first avoidable cause of morbidity and mortality. Blanco added that the Health Ministry worked on both lines, saying: “The Spanish population likes the smoke-free spaces, so it is necessary to continue advancing this line of work, which is the most solid, publichealth tool against tobacco.” That is why the Ministry is showing its “determined intention to

promote new spaces to improve health protection”. The latest ban, says the Health Minister, “is a very primal issue. The idea of tobacco prohibition causes difficulties of understanding, but we have to move forward to protect the citizen from exposure”. He then highlighted the groups most vulnerable to tobacco, and he has shown “enormous” concern about an increase in the rates of consumption by women. “It is a unique problem because it does not respond to belonging to the poorest groups,” he said. “They tend to be at university or at work.”

Veteran folklore groups still hold Canary values THE Santa Ana Seniors group and Adeje’s Municipal Folklore group have been celebrating their annual anniversaries, 25 and 30 years respectively. Since they were formed, both groups have worked to rescue, promote and enhance traditional Canarian folklore values. They have also been restoring celebrations to local calendars, underlining the importance of tradition in the history and the borough’s development. The two groups, who have been extremely successful, have recounted the excellent participation of many members of the public, and the co-operation from Adeje Council. The Municipal Folklore group, founded in 1988, are celebrating their 30year mark, and, in recent years, they have won the Adeje Gold Medal and a Ganigo, awarded by Cit Sur for groups and individuals who contribute to tourism quality. Besides releasing four records, the group have staged many performances and have travelled nationally and internationally, promoting the history and traditions of the borough. Santa Ana, named after the Patron Saint of Adeje senior citizens, is a group of older residents who come together to learn, share and prove that age is no barrier to continuing to enjoy life. They have released two records, and are regular participants, annually, in the more important Adeje events.

Stabilising old Spa will add 1.6m to original refurb cost

Paraglider’s ‘lucky’ landing

A PARAGLIDER who crashed into an overhead power line in Los Silos on Sunday, landing near the municipal swimming pools, was “lucky to be alive, and not seriously electrocuted”, said doctors. After receiving initial assistance, he was transferred to the Hospital del Norte with moderate injuries.

Earthquakes in Spain THE Canarian Government has made a “budgetary effort” to save the old Spa of Santa Cruz, which means that the one million euros already set aside to carry out structural reinforcements has increased by a further 1.6 million, to stabilise the facades. This was the response from the Finance Ministry to a question from PP deputy Agustín Hernández Miranda, who asked what the anticipated date was to announce the work’s

DRIVERS in Spain, including the Canaries, have been warned to watch out for highway robbers, who are throwing eggs at windscreens, forcing drivers to a stop to clean them. Dashcam footage, captured in the south of Spain by a driver, has shown the modus operandi of the gangs, who are lobbing eggs at cars travelling in the opposite direction. The thieves are banking on drivers using their windscreen wipers to clear the mess, because it actually smears more and makes their vision worse, forcing them to pull over. And that’s when a second vehicle, travelling in the same direction as the “egged” car, swings into action. An astonishing video was shot by Peter Cackett, who said he was travelling on the A-356, from El Puente, Alcaucin, going down towards the coast. “I got both number plates, the

tender. The building was opened in April after a fire inside the building. The budget was increased, following a draft of the project and its implementation, by Gestur Tenerife, to revive the building from its state of degradation and instability. Technical tests have been carried out to see what needs to be done to stabilise the facades, to ensure the safety of the building during the structural reinforcement. According to the Finance Ministry, that is why “an additional budgetary effort has been made, raising the forecast, initially established at 1,082,000 euros, to a new sum of 2,625,000 euros, including

the project”. What Heritage did not answer was the PP deputy’s specific question about the bidding date, merely saying: “Once the aforementioned entrustment to Gestur Tenerife has been formalised, a period will begin for the drafting of the project, after which, and prior to the corresponding procedures, the bidding for the work may begin.” Since the commission has not even been made, the drafting, bidding and awarding of the work is expected take place over the next year. As for its use afterwards, the Canarian Government said this would be decided after the work had been completed.

car that threw the egg and the one waiting to rob me, if I had stopped,” he said: “The important thing is not to put your wipers on. If you do, your whole windscreen will be obscured. And don’t stop to clean it off, because that’s

what they want you to do.” He added: “They then offer to help you clean it, and, while you are pre-occupied, they rob you in whatever way they can.” Peter said the Guardia Civil were extremely helpful when he reported

SPAIN’S National Geographic Institute recorded two earthquakes last weekend, measuring 4.3 and 3.8 on the Richter Scale. The Instituto Geográfico Nacional registered a magnitude 4.3 quake at a depth of 50km in the Azores-Cabo de San Vicente area, in the seas off the south-west coast of the Iberian peninsula, at 12.45am on Sunday morning. It followed a 3.8 magnitude quake, at 12km, which shook the area south-east of Melgaco, near the border between Portugal and Spain, on Saturday evening at 8.55pm. the incident, saying: “If you have an egg thrown at your windscreen, then slow down safely and make an assessment as to whether you can see through it. “Don’t be tempted to wash it off with your water and wipers as this will cause smearing, and make it worse. “If it is safe to do so, drive slowly away from the location to a built-up, welllit area, where there are people about, before you get out your car to clean the windscreen.” The UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice for Spain says: “Be aware of ‘highway pirates’, who target foreign-registered and hire cars, especially those towing caravans. “Some will (forcefully) try to make you stop, claiming there is something wrong with your car, or that you have damaged theirs. If you decide to stop to check the condition of your/their vehicle, stop in a public area with lights, like

a service station, and be extremely wary of anyone offering help. “When driving, be wary of approaches by bogus police officers in plain clothes, travelling in unmarked cars. “In all traffic-related matters, police officers will be in uniform, and all police officers, including those in plain clothes, carry official ID. “Unmarked police vehicles have a flashing, electronic sign on the rear window which reads Policía (Police) or Guardia Civil, and, normally, have blue flashing lights. “Genuine police officers will ask you to show them your documents and will not ask for your bag or wallet/purse. “If in any doubt, talk through the car window and contact the Guardia Civil on 062, or the police on 112, and ask them to confirm that the registration number of the vehicle corresponds to an official police vehicle.”

Drunk woman, who caused chaos on flight

POLICE officers, called to Prestwick Airport after reports of a disturbance on a flight from Tenerife, arrested a drunken woman. The 35-year-old was held by police on Sunday night, following reports of a disturbance on board the Ryanair flight from Tenerife, which landed shortly after 5pm. Witnesses said the woman was warned about her conduct by the flight captain, before police were called. Her passport and boarding card were then confiscated by an air steward, as the flight came in to land. A police spokesman said: “Police Scotland can confirm that they received a report of a passenger acting in a disorderly way. “Police attended and were informed of the circumstances by staff, which resulted in a female being arrested and detained in police custody, to appear at court.”

Customers have reported receiving emails after purchasing, typically, with a subject heading claiming: “Your order cannot be shipped.” Once opened, the email, which appears authentic, asks the reader to click on a link to resolve the delivery problem. The link takes the customer to a page looking exactly like Amazon’s site, which asks the customer to confirm his or her name, address and credit or debitcard details. Amazon.es urges customers not to click on links, or open attachments in any email purporting to be from the online store. And, if it is too late, you are urged to visit the page on the Amazon site titled Proteger tu sistema (“Protect your account”). “Fraudulent emails usually contain a confirmation of an order you have not purchased, or data attached, relating to confirmation of an order,” says the site. They

may also contain “questions about your username, password or any other type of personal information”, which may include DNI for Spanish nationals, or NIE for foreign residents, card or bank-account number, PIN codes or card security codes, name and surname, or any other information which might identify the customer, such as town or city of birth. Some emails may contain “requests to update your payment method information, via a website that does not belong to Amazon”, according to the company. Genuine Amazon emails include instructions on how to verify your data, and they will tell you to enter the site in a different tab. “Click on Gestionar

métodos de pago (‘Manage payment methods’) in Mi cuenta (‘Your account’),” warns Amazon.es. “If there is no warning message on this page, asking you to update your payment methods, then the email you have received is not from Amazon. “Links in genuine Amazon emails will only ever start with https://www.amazon. es/xxxx, and legitimate website addresses carry a dot before ‘amazon.es’, with no other characters, such as hyphens. And Amazon never uses IP addresses or domains, such as ‘http://123.456.789.123/ amazon’, which are often found in bogus emails.” Legitimate messages from the company will never include attachments to open or downloads to

install, or spelling and grammar mistakes, and will never come from an address other than amazon. com, amazon.es, amazon. co.uk, or domains from other countries where the firm has a presence, such as Italy (.it), Brazil (.com. br), Australia (.com.au), Germany (.de), Canada (.ca), China (.cn), France (.fr), India (.in), Japan (.co. jp), México (.com.mx), The Netherlands (.nl), or Turkey (.com.tr), but only the branch from which the customer has ordered. You will not receive an amazon.com email in relation to an order from amazon.co.uk, for example. In the event of any uncertainty, enter your Amazon site via a separate tab and log in, ignoring any links in the email received. When customers know, or suspect, they have received a ‘phishing’ attempt, they should forward it, in full, to stop-spoofing@amazon. com. With “Black Friday” upon us, and Christmasshopping fever about to break out, most expatriates in Spain, not travelling back to their country of origin for the festive season, will probably be using Amazon to send gifts to friends and family. And they should be extra-vigilant about possible scams at these times of high website traffic.

At last, Las Chafiras roadworks will start ROADWORKS for the new double junction of Las Chafiras-Oroteanda, will begin next week, with the aim of putting an end to the great “funnel” of traffic from the South. It is one of the highest traffic-congestion points on the island, through which an average of 75,000 vehicles pass daily. Pablo Rodríguez, VicePresident of the Canarian Government, and Public Works Councillor, announcing the good news, said: “This week, we will sign off the act of redefinition and the work can begin, so we are only a few days away.” And just before participating in a lunch, organised by the Forum of Friends of the South of Tenerife (FAST) in the Marylanza hotel in Las Américas, the Councillor

added: “All the previous work has been done, and there is an updated project. “We have the environmentalimpact statement, and it has been tendered. The work has been awarded, and the contract has

been signed (awarded to the UTE Ferrovial Agroman SA-Ten Asfaltos Excavaciones Óscar del Castillo for 21.8m euros), and this week the company signed the act of redefinition.”

The double link will be built at the kilometre points of the 62.040 (Las Chafiras) and 64.540 (Oroteanda) highways, and on the sections of roads near the secondary roads, TF-65, TF652 and TF-655, as well as

part of the urban road at the heart of the industrial zone. The works will comprise the construction of a large ring in Las Chafiras and the creation of a new link in Oroteanda. The project includes the construction of several roads between both crossings, to guarantee connectivity with the trunk of the TF-1. Cabildo president Carlos Alonso, who also attended the lunch, said: “What all citizens of Tenerife expect is that there are machines and that the works begin.” But he added that his criticisms have been directed at the Department of Public Works, and not, specifically, at Rodríguez. “There is a lack of resources and lack of technical capacity, not of the Councillor but of the Ministry, which sometimes does not have enough qualified personnel to promote the works quickly enough,” he said.

S Y L V E S T E R Stallone has worked intensely and with little rest in his first three days of activity in Tenerife, where he continues to give shape to the new instalment of Rambo. The Italian-American actor is already 100% immersed in filming the fifth part of Rambo, one of the two fundamental characters in his professional career. There is no longer time for distractions, such as those of the walk through La Noria, with lunch included, which was more a product of the rainy setback, than the planning of work. On Monday, there was hardly time to rest, but Stallone had already begun to suffer consequences. In his Instagram profile, he shared a photograph showing a bruise on one arm, comparing it with a similar one, picked up while working on the fourth part of Rambo. “The shooting of Rambo 5 is getting even harder,” read the caption adorning the image. But Sly has the physique to withstand it. At 72, he continues to maintain his keep-fit routines. He exercises, maintains a balanced diet and is a tireless worker. In the opening days of work, his colleagues have realised the professionalism of Stallone, who rests just enough to resume the action. On Monday, he had one of those days of professional hyperactivity, shooting indoor and outdoor scenes in Ifara. While the bad guys, the Martinez brothers, played by Sergio Peris-Mencheta and Óscar Jaenada, continue to work in a Santa Úrsula house, Rambo entered another high-class house in the upper area of Santa Cruz, where the activity was centred. In Ifara, there were traffic

Sly’s filming is well underway, despite the rain

hold-ups and parking restrictions throughout the day, to enable the actors to complete several scenes, in which the main

protagonist took part. “It’s a very emotional movie,” said Mexican actress Adriana Barraza, who gives life to a very

intimate friend of John Rambo. The deployment of media was one of the aspects which attracted most

attention from the curious. The parking lot of the old Language School in Santa Cruz, and its surrounding land, was taken literally by the vehicles, which are part of the logistics, as well as the uphill street that flows into Los Campitos. Then, well into the night, it was time to begin dismantling the location and start transferring to the next destination. Incidentally, the location team are working throughout the island with precision, looking for places to continue setting the fifth part of the John Rambo saga. The abandoned Los Campitos football field, where what used to be natural grass is now shrubs and poor grass, is where the Rambo 5 production team have set up base camp. It’s just a few minutes from filming locations, with enough space for comfort and tranquillity, with surrounding trees to preserve a slice of anonymity. The team set up a camp in which it highlighted, above all, a luxurious caravan destined for the star’s rest. Stallone arrived at the camp around 7pm, expecting to return to the filming area again sometime later. There, a young fan was waiting for him, his mum standing guard to try to get the most precious treasure: a photograph with her idol. Around the luxurious vehicle, there was an important assembly, which included a truck with a portable bathroom, and another one for makeup, which Stallone always passes before returning to his place of work. In addition, there are numerous support vehicles, others that transport silent generators, and those destined for the transfer of the filming equipment. These are placed strategically, so that no unwanted person can access and disturb the artist’s rest.

Drug-dealing Festival trio nabbed by police

15 CW

Wife’s acid attack, by former husband

Python slips out for stroll

A SNAKE from the python family was seen slithering down a street on Tuesday, in the La Palma municipality of El Paso. THREE people, arrested at Gran Canaria’s WOMAD Festival, in Las Palmas, were charged with distributing drugs, such as hashish and amphetamines, as well as ecstasy pills.

The festival is an annual event, staged at Parque Santa Catalina, in the Gran Canaria capital, and the National Police placed several surveillance cameras in the vicinity.

Thanks to the cameras, police were able to identify two men and one woman, distributing several narcotic substances. Once officers had arrested them, they found different types of drugs in their possession, all carefully prepared for distribution, as well as euros, in notes of small denominations. Of the trio arrested, one already has a police record for drug-dealing. The two men held are aged 22 and 49, respectively, and the woman is 48.

It was spotted by neighbours, who then alerted the Guardia Civil, as well as the wild-lifeprotection services, which began a joint search of the area. It has not yet been confirmed whether the reptile has been captured. The Neotropic Foundation says the python, seen in Los Pedigrales, is a Python regius, otherwise known as a Ball python, which originates from Africa. This particular species, which is not as dangerous as others, is commonly sold as a pet in the animal shops.

A WOMAN was rushed to the University Hospital (HUC) on Tuesday night in a serious condition, after being sprayed with acid in the face, in La Laguna.

She is said to have been attacked by her 45-yearold former husband Matteo E.A, an Italian who was arrested by police in the South of Tenerife, for, allegedly, committing a crime of gender violence. The horrifying incident took

place just before 9.30pm, when the Emergency Services received an alert from a cafeteria near the Plaza del Tranvía, in La Cuesta, and immediately activated the established protocol. The woman was helped by the Canary Emergency Service (SUC), which took her to the hospital by ambulance. National Police officers will be in charge of the investigation, and the Local Police are also involved. Sources close to the family have indicated that the woman is stable in hospital.

Spain’s health service now provide implants Breast implants, including areola micropigmentation, will now be funded entirely by the Spanish Health Service, for woman who have had mastectomies because of cancer. Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo announced the news, adding that diabetic adults will be able to get “flash” glucose meters on the public health system. Until now, both had to be paid for, although a reconstruction was still possible for women who had lost their breasts to cancer. The list of extra services, soon to be funded by the State healthcare service, include facial restoration following scarring or disfigurement, eye “readers” for those with serious, neuromotor disorders, and replacement parts for external hearing apparatus, such as coclear implants, will no longer cost the patient. Smear tests will also become routine and automatic for women, in the same way that mammograms are, for those within the recommended age range, and age groups, for those eligible to obtain funding towards hearing aids, will be widened.

All these elements, said Ms Carcedo, “are extremely important for those affected”, adding: “When you meet with these people, they are very interested in these elements, because they will allow them to lead a more normal life, without having to make prohibitive payments.” For the first time, “flash” glucose-measuring apparatus will come on prescription for patients with Type I diabetes, who need to take multiple doses of insulin, and have to carry out at least six blood-sugar checks a day. The “flash” device makes the process much easier, and does not involve finger-pricks. Priority will be given to those with eyesight problems, or serious functional limitations, patients with repeated hypoglycaemia episodes, pregnant women, and those with uncontrolled levels of HbA1c, defined as above 7.5%, plus under-18s. Those already using the “flash” apparatus will automatically receive them free, said Ms Carcedo. The list of new elements, included within State healthcare financing, stipulates cost limits. But, in the vast majority of cases, it will cover the full amount.

Crash rider trapped

A MAN aged 57 was seriously injured after crashing his motorbike into a barrier on the TF28 in Charco del Pino, and becoming trapped underneath. The accident happened on Tuesday morning, and the emergency call was received at around 11.40am. Ambulances and the fire services were promptly dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters cut the barrier to free the injured biker, enabling medics to attend to his injuries. Their initial assessment found that the biker had suffered severe bruising, as well as having suspected internal injuries, so he was transferred to Candelaria Hospital by helicopter for further treatment. The Guardia Civil were also at the scene, to help cover the emergency, as well as assisting with the traffic diversion.

Arona ‘bribery’ Councillor imprisoned, with architects FELIX Sierra, the former Arona Councillor, along with architects Roberto de Luis and Eliseo de la Rosa, have been jailed for more than two years, after being found guilty of bribery. They are the only convicted people to serve prison sentences, following the Supreme Court’s final decision. Yet they could still appeal against the verdict in the Constitutional Court. Despite having his term reduced from four years, Felix Sierra will serve two years and eight months in prison, plus eight months of special disqualification and a 500,000-euro fine, for continued bribery. The same sentence was imposed on Arona’s former technical architect, Eliseo de la Rosa, while municipal architect Roberto de Luis must spend three years and six months in prison, with a 10-month special disqualification and a 700,000-euro fine, for the same crime. Businessman Arsenio Zamora, who acted as an intermediary in the entire plot, will not go to prison because his sentence was under two years (one year, and six months), but he faces a 250,000-euro fine. The same applies to architect Antonio Luis González de Tolosa, who was given a one-year sentence and fined 40,000 euros. There were no changes, for the crimes of continued urban planning irregularities, levelled against Arona Council members between 2003-

2007, headed by then Mayor José Alberto González Reverón, who did not appeal to the Supreme Court, or Alfonso Barroso. But they have all been disqualified from public

office for 17 years each, along with Manuel Barrios, Juan José Alayón, Daniel Martin and José Luis González. They have also been fined 12 euros daily, for 18 months.

Spain’s trains on track to Scotland

SPANISH train-builder Talgo is on track to create 1,000 jobs in the UK, after deciding on a Scotland plant to construct trains for the first phase of the HS2 high-speed railway project, connecting London and Birmingham by 2026. Madrid-based Talgo employs more than 2,000 people to build high-speed trains, across two factories in Spain, and one in Kazakhstan. Company President Carlos de Palacio, after choosing Scotland’s Fife, said: “This has been a tremendouslychallenging mission for Talgo, and I have, personally, seen excellence in all corners of the UK. “It has been a difficult decision to make, as the quality has been so high in so many places.”

Universal Exports

Another technical problem delays Gran Canaria flight AN aeroplane, on route to Madrid from Gran Canaria, was forced to do a U-turn on Wednesday, following a technical problem. The Iberia IB3827, scheduled to depart at 11.15am, finally took off from Gran Canaria airport at 12.20pm, after being delayed twice. On-board passenger José

María Monzón said that as the plane was about to pass Fuerteventura, attendants informed those on board that it had to return to Gran Canaria, because the pilot was having problems with the navigation system. But José also said it was clear there were problems with the plane in the first place, because passengers had been told the initial delay was down to a technical fault. The plane returned to Las Palmas airport, landing

safely, and, while it was on the ground, technicians began to fix the problem. Iberia staff gave the passengers the option of leaving the aircraft, or staying on board. It is the second time this month that an Iberia flight from Gran Canaria has had technical difficulties, causing the plane to return shortly after take-off. The first incident occurred on 17th November, and again the problem involved the navigation system.

Pound rocked by Brexit chaos By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. Brexit has continued to dominate currency markets in recent weeks, with fears of a no-deal scenario

leading to some notable volatility in the pound. This resulted in GBP/EUR briefly jumping from 1.13 euros to 1.15, before closing at 1.12, while EUR/GBP climbed from £0.87 to £0.88. Meanwhile, GBP/USD traded in a range of $1.31 and $1.28, with EUR/USD creeping up from $1.13 to $1.14. The pound has seen some significant volatility so far in November, with sterling suffering some particularly-dramatic losses last week, as criticism of a draft Brexit agreement with the EU led to the resignation of two senior Cabinet members, and attempts to force a no-confidence vote in

Theresa May. Political uncertainty has also had a significant impact on the euro this month, with both Brexit and Italy budget concerns denting EUR sentiment. Meanwhile, outside of a small setback, because of the US, midterm elections, the US

dollar has remained buoyant over the past couple of weeks, as demand was bolstered by nervous GBP and EUR investors. GBP investors are likely to remain laserfocused on UK politics, in the coming weeks, as May’s premiership remains in the balance, and the draft Brexit

deal is put before Parliament, with further losses in the pound likely, if events increase the risk of a no-deal Brexit. Meanwhile, the euro is likely to remain sensitive to any news regarding Italy, as markets wait for the European C o m m i s s i o n’ s response to Rome’s decision to defy EU, fiscal regulations.

Finally, the US dollar looks set to continue to appreciate, as safehaven demand likely remains elevated by European political uncertainty, and renewed, US-China trade tensions. Fake-job girls finished up working in brothel POLICE in Andalucia have raided a brothel and freed 22 women of various nationalities, who were forced into prostitution and kept locked up when not working. The victims had been rounded up in other Spanish towns, with offers of housing and a fake job in the hotel sector. But, instead, the women were forced into prostitution and deprived of their freedom, and locked up in accommodation that they had to pay for. Police said that if any of them refused, the gang would use voodoo or black magic to achieve their purpose, intimidating their victims

and fining them for non-compliance. One of the freed victims told police how she was recruited in Barcelona by a member of the organisation, while they were pasting posters offering work. She said that they offered her a false promise of work in the hotel sector and assured her of a home, and free travel to the Almerian town of Vicar. National Police officers raided the premises and arrested three men and two women, all charged with belonging to a criminal gang, trafficking humans for the purpose of sexual exploitation, and for crimes related to prostitution.

Avocado thief gave cops an easy arrest ARONA Local Police, who arrested a 52-year-old man in the early hours of Tuesday, charged him with stealing 80kg of avocados from a farm in Las Rosas, El Fraile. He is originally from Portugal and has a police record, having carried out numerous robberies. But the thief was startled by the farm owners, who witnessed him in the act and gave chase. But the man fled the

scene by jumping over a wall, three yards high, surrounding the farm. He then got into a parked Seat Inca, in which a second man was waiting. The farmers returned to the house to report the robbery, and Local Police searched the area, catching the Portuguese man alone in the car, with his load of avocados, driving around Las Rosas. He was charged, and is awaiting a court appearance.

As the Autumn nights darken and the political temperature rises, with Brexit looming and politicians returning to work after a long hot summer off, Peston aims to shine a light on the stories you might have missed and to be at the heart of national debate. Peston says: “Britain is on the verge of making history. The stakes could not be higher, but so too are the uncertainties. What kind of Brexit will we have? Is Brexit certain? Can the divisions in the Conservative and Labour Parties be healed or will one or both parties split? How long will Theresa May remain as PM? How many Labour MPs will be thrown out by disgruntled members? Perhaps most important of all, can hope be restored that the UK will become a richer, fairer, less divided country? “Rarely has there been such a need to hold our political leaders and our elected representatives to account. Which is why I am so excited by the launch on Wednesdays of Peston, which will continue the tradition of Peston on Sunday with agenda-setting interviews, a digital conversation with the audience, cutting-edge graphical analysis, informality and fun. “And for those of you unaware why the show moved from Sunday to Wednesday, it was for no other reason than that the repeat of Peston on Sunday on Sunday nights was watched by twice as many people as the morning live show. So I and ITV thought we should convert it into a proper night time show. I could not be more pleased to be broadcasting after News at Ten on arguably the most important political day of the week.”

In this third episode, Eleanor - a marketing consultant in an affluent South London suburb - wants to see if leaving her four boys in complete freedom for a long weekend will improve how they get along with each other. Eleanor feels she’s had to run the boys like ‘a pack of dogs’ and along with husband James she hopes the weekend will see the kids grow in confidence. Alexander, aged 13, is the eldest brother by just a few minutes from his twin Nicholas, and he tends to take charge. While Alexander wants to ‘prove that we can survive without ultimate hell breaking out’, Nicholas hopes to step out of his twin’s shadow. Alongside the youngest sibling, eight-year-old Edward, there’s also William, aged 12, who rows with his brothers the most. Can William find the space to do his own thing? After four days away, will Eleanor and James return to peace and harmony? Or will the brothers run riot?

Louis Theroux’s Altered States: Take My Baby cho i c e BBC2, 21.00

Louis heads to California, the US adoption capital, where the majority of new-born adoptions are carried out privately in what is now a multimillion dollar industry. Agencies, facilitators and lawyers can earn thousands of dollars per baby by matching pregnant women prepared to give up their newborns, with adoptive parents willing to pay up to $50,000 for a baby. Spending time with birth mothers as they prepare to hand over their babies, Louis uncovers the stories of poverty, addiction and abuse which have informed their decision. He also meets adoptive families who are paying out huge amounts of money in the hope of being able to raise a child they can’t have by natural means. But in a system open to abuse, whether or not the birth mother hands over the baby can hang in the balance until after the birth.

Every day this week the celebrity contestants - actress Samantha Womack, Top Gear’s Rory Reid, broadcaster Anne Diamond and comedian James Acaster - take on a series of challenging quiz games selected by the host, teatime quiz legend, Richard Osman. A daily winner will be declared following a quick-fire round at the end of each show as the scores are tallied across the week resulting in an overall champion being crowned on Friday. Will the winning stars opt for the much coveted House Of Games dartboard, or instead go for the musthave branded dressing gown? Fun, witty, and full of surprises, Richard’s cross-examination of the celebs over the course of a week provides an entertaining watch for all the family, as the level of competitiveness and camaraderie grows. And of course, this warm, feel-good quiz is perfect for playing along with at home. Richard Osman’s House of Games is made by Remarkable. Executive producers are Tamara Gilder and Richard Hague, and the series producer is Stephen Lovelock.

This last quarter-final sees the six strongest chefs from the week’s heats attempt to impress Monica and Marcus in two crucial challenges. Only the three most talented chefs will go through to knockout week. First up, the chefs face the new challenge, the judges’ favourite ingredient test. Monica wants the six chefs to invent a dish that celebrates a key ingredient, eggs. The four chefs that showed star quality now face a test that has seen many a seasoned chef quake, the critics test. They cook their own two-course menu to be scrutinised by the judges and three of the UK’s most discerning palates. Food critics Jay Rayner, William Sitwell and Amol Rajan sit in judgement and to find the flaws in the chefs’ food. After this round, one chef will be shown the door while the other three survive to battle it out in knockout week.

Is there life on this new-found planet? Experts can’t tell! COULD there really be life on other planets, and would it resemble any known species on Earth... even the human race?

Popular culture has been full of inventions of extraterrestrial creatures, from little green men with multiple eyes, to white, pointy faces. But nearly 60 years on from the Moon landings, we are still none the wiser. Space scientists have focused mainly on Mars in recent years, but their Holy Grail could be closer to home: Barnard B, a “Super-Earth” discovered last week, is a mere six light years from our own planet, and could hold the key to the question being asked for decades: what does life elsewhere in the universe actually look like? Among the 60-plus researchers, from 10 countries, astronomer Ignasi Ribas, from Spain’s High Council of Scientific Investigation (CSIC)’s Institute of Space Sciences, and a member of the Catalunya Space Studies Institute, is the main author of reports, being digested avidly, worldwide, about this unexpected discovery. In an interview with the Spanish media, Ribas reveals, in a nutshell, what has been uncovered about this brave new world. According to the astronomer, Barnard B, named after the star it orbits, called Barnard, is at least 3.2 times the size of Earth, and its year lasts 233 Earth days. The distance from its sun, Barnard, is just 40% of that of our own, but the “new” planet gets only 2% of the volume of light Earth receives. Its sun is extremely weak, and the planet’s temperature, at least at this time of year and in the parts seen so far, is an unthinkable minus 170ºC. Unsurprisingly, it is covered in ice, and Barnard B sits in the so-called “ice line”, an area within the orbit of a star, where volatile compounds such as water condense and become solid. That means it is “improbable” that the

planet has water on its surface, says Ribas. But it might have water in the subsoil, which could be conducive to life, despite the exceptionally-hostile conditions. “At times, life does find ways of adapting to be able to survive,” he adds. What type of life might survive in such extreme conditions? “Barnard B,” adds Ribas, “is far from what we would call an inhabitable zone”, this being defined as a planet at the right distance from its sun, to have unfrozen water on its surface. “If it does have life, and we haven’t ruled it out, it would be similar to what we would expect to be found on the frozen moons of Jupiter and Saturn, such as Europa or Encelado,” says the astronomer. “But it’s precisely the type of planet which doesn’t exist in our Solar System. Barnard B is what we call a ‘Super-Earth’, a space object larger than Earth, but with 10 times less mass.” Ribas discovered another planet in 2016, which he named Próxima B (‘Near B’), and he says Barnard B is similar, in that both orbit muchsmaller stars, and give out far less heat than our own sun. This earlier planet, named after its sun, Próxima, is also really close to the Solar System, at just 4.2 light years away. Próxima’s temperature is 3,000ºC and Barnard’s is 3,300ºC, although Próxima’s climate is milder, and is within what Ribas calls the “inhabitable zone”, meaning it could, potentially, have water on its surface. The Barnard discovery, described as “a major challenge” for space researchers, and one of the biggest international space-observation projects in history, involved collating more than 20 years of data, captured by over

770 methods, using seven different instruments in observatories all over the world, and spending two years analysing them. And it’s possible that no further information exists about Barnard B or Próxima B. But the 60-strong research team, which includes scientists from the Astrophysics Institutes of Andalucía and the Canary Islands, Madrid’s Complutense University and Barcelona’s Astrobiology Centre (CAB), intend to keep studying both, while looking out for possible signs of other planets in their vicinity. The “Doppler Technique”, one of numerous methods designed by astronomers to seek out those planets impossible to spot by direct observation, was employed in the case of Próxima B and Barnard B. The presence of a planet creates effects on the star it orbits, which means that planets can be traced by observing stars. “When a light source comes close to its observer, its spectrum moves slightly towards blue and its waves are shorter,” says Ribas. “And when the light source moves further away, the spectrum shifts towards the red and its waves become longer. “Gravity on the planet also makes the star it orbits move, so when we see a star moving to and fro, apparently, we can probably infer that there’s a planet orbiting it.” Ribas’ co-author, Cristina Rodríguez-López, says the discovery is a “significant step forward” in the search for planets beyond the Solar System, which may house suitable conditions for life to survive on their surface. Spanish scientists were joined in this enormous mission by space researchers from the UK, US, France, Germany, Switzerland, Chile, Israel, China and Poland.

Femen activists display despair at Franco rally

TOPLESS protestors from feminist activist group Femen disrupted a rally of around 200 people in Madrid last Sunday, marking the anniversary of Spain’s former dictator, Francisco Franco.

Police said nearly 200 Franco supporters gathered in the Plaza de Oriente, where he addressed the throngs during his 1939-75 military dictatorship. Many carried flags, umbrellas and ties with the colours of the Franco-era Falangist party. Three women interrupted the rally, their torsos daubed with the words “legal fascism” and “national shame”, before they were arrested by police. Some in the crowd reacted angrily, and actually assaulted the women. The pro-Franco event came as Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s socialist government were drawing up plans to exhume the dictator’s body from the

Valley of the Fallen basilica, just outside Madrid. The family of the late dictator, who died on 20th November 1975, wants his remains placed in the family crypt at Madrid’s La Almudena Cathedral. But Sanchez wants to move his remains to a morediscreet spot, where it will be harder for Franco followers to pay homage. Pro-Franco demonstrator Dori Grande told AFP that people from both sides of Spain’s Civil War were buried at the Valley of the Fallen site, created, ostensibly, to reunify the country. “This year, more than ever, we have to defend our homeland and our history, because history is there,” he added. “You cannot erase it.” The remains of some 37,000 victims of the civil war, both republican and nationalists, are buried at the Valley of the Fallen basilica. But many of the families of the dead were not notified, and the site itself was built, partly, by republican prisoners, some of whom died in the process.

The 15-year delay for health centre goes on A DISPUTE over land ownership has delayed plans, for more than 15 years, to build a new health centre in Nerja, a coastal town on the Costa del Sol. The local council is trying to register a plot of land in its name, before building works can begin. But the land is the fourth chosen for the centre since plans for a health clinic were approved, all those years ago. Failure to agree a site for the building has caused infighting between the PSOE and Partido Popular (PP) political parties. Jose Maria Rivas, a PSOE Councillor, was criticised for “failing to provide documentation sent by

the council to the Junta de Andalucia, supposedly requesting a new location for the project”. Councillor Rivas countered that the previous governing team had also been, “invited to submit all documentation”, but had failed to do so. Earlier this year, it was claimed that the Junta de Andalucia, which is funding 50% of the project, was still not committed to a health centre. But Ana Isabel Gonzalez, Health Delegate from the Junta de Andalucia, said: “We hope that money can be put aside in the 2019 budgets, once the functional plan has been sent to the Ministry in Seville and approved.”

Deadly wasp bee-killers may be done away with EXPERTS are optimistic that Mallorca could be the first area to wipe out the predatory species of the velutina Asian wasp. And, if there are no new sightings by July 2020, the work of a team of biologists and expert bee-keepers, from Mar Leza University, will have made major progress in removing the species. The velutinas, in large numbers, are capable of killing 12 million bees each year, the equivalent of up to 3,000 beehives. In the three years since the eradication project was launched, nests measuring 80cm-wide and weighing seven kilos, have been found, and they can house more than 8,000 wasps. Following reports in mainland Spain of 4,000 nests being recorded in Cantabria, for example, experts anticipated recovering 100 or more nests in Mallorca. But so far this year, though, they have found just one. Some 580 traps, baited with fish to attract the velutina wasp, have been distributed throughout the Serra mountain range, and are checked every 10 days. The biologists and experts, working on the project, say that if a velutina is found in a trap, it is because there is a nest nearby.

Once the wasp is released, researchers use binoculars to follow its course “home”. Having located the nest, the team wait until nighttime when all of the wasps are inside, and remove it. David Colomar, responsible for the Balearic Islands Centre for the Reception of Exotic Animals, said: “Removing the nest is key to ending the Asian wasp, at its weak point.” The velutina was first detected in Mallorca in 2015 by a beekeeper in the Soller Valley. The first nest was removed that year, but, since then, the species has expanded, affecting 10 municipalities on the island. Between 2015 and 2017, a total of 30 nests were found and removed. Colomar said the “outlook was good”, and that Mallorca could become a “benchmark” in the removal of the Asian wasp. But he warns: “Never lower your guard!”

Guardia officers sniffed out whopping weed haul

GUARDIA CIVIL officers, who uncovered a sophisticated, indoor marijuana plantation in Vicar, Almeria, made four arrests, after months of investigation. Officers first launched Operation Propalar in May, after received a number of anonymous calls, expressing concern about the strong smell of marijuana close to a primary school. Then, having narrowed down the possible sources of the smell, they put various properties under surveillance. This revealed suspicious comings and goings from three terraced houses, all of them rented out, and

all in the same street as the school. Further investigations led the Guardia to suspect that the basements of two of the properties, accessible only from an internal patio, were being used for growing marijuana. When officers finally went into the properties, they found 1,795 marijuana plants. They also discovered a complex system for powering the plantation, and for facilitating the cultivation, storage and sale of the plants. A search resulted in the seizure of 4,000 euros in cash, six mobile phones, a laptop, eight industrial air-conditioning units, 30 ventilators, six extractor fans, 243 halogen lamps and an Audi A5, as well as other items. Four individuals aged between 22 and 50 were detained.

Fuel Resto Bar Review

Refuel the right way THIS tucked-away little gem is located inside the Activate sports club, opposite the impressive Baobab Suites in Costa Adeje. It’s a great chill-out area, perfect for a tasty lunch, drinks with friends, or to fill up after a good workout. The Fuel Restobar is easy to find. And, being just a few minutes off the TF1, it’s easy to get to, with plenty of parking, both on-street, and off. The first thing to notice is the tranquil atmosphere, as soon as you walk in. The place is modern with a natural flair, and it’s very open-plan, overlooking an inside beach area for the whole family to enjoy. The setting is very much like the menu; a connection with the natural environment means that the outside is brought inside. We both enjoy eating healthily, so we stopped here for a late lunch. We were greeted with a huge smile from our very helpful server, who talked us through some of the drinks, and made some recommendations. A first look at the menu gave us a pleasant surprise; there is a great range for vegetarians and vegans, and they cater for those on gluten-free diets. Alongside the main menu, there is also a Tapas menu for lighter bites. If you are looking to just

pop in for a drink, they have a fully-stocked bar, as well as a great range of healthy smoothies, and some light, refreshing water-mixers; the raspberry and rosemary is to-die-for. We started with a selection of starters. The hummus, served with crudités, was thick and rich in flavour, and paired with wholemeal bread. It was delicious. The beautifully-presented spring rolls were a treat for the eyes, as well as the taste buds. They weren’t the normal, heavy, greasy, Chinese version, but light, rice-paper rolls, stuffed full of a Quinoa Tabbouleh (Lebanese salad with onions and tomatoes). Our third dish was the Bruschetta, with tomato and Jamon Iberico. What really made this dish come

alive was the seaweed bread, which went perfectly with the sweet tomatoes, and the smoky, salty flavour of the Jamon. Onto the mains, and we had the Asian Wok to share, with free-range chicken. This was a good serving, packed full of chicken and

vegetables with a lovely, deep, soy flavour. To accompany the main, we had the creamy, sweetpotato mash, which had a nutty flavour from the locally-grown potatoes. It was a great portion, and we got all the comfort of regular mash without all

the calories. Healthy and yummy - we all win! Then came another side which our server was very excited to tell us about. It was lots of little, special treats on a plate; no, we are not talking about dessert, we are talking about vegetables! The candied, mini, ecological vegetables are all grown on the island, in Granadilla. The mini aubergines, carrots, courgettes, bell peppers and more - were amazing, and you could taste the freshness. They were not complicated with any sauces or dips because they didn’t need it; they taste fantastic by themselves. While waiting for the mains to go down, we turned again to the setting, and how it suits so many. Both of us have children who would love the beach area, while we could enjoy a glass of wine and a girly chat, then fill the kids up with healthy meals. We saw many families and groups of friends coming in and enjoying the environment. It’s hasslefree, and, when the sun begins to set, it just gets that little bit more special. So back to the desserts, and we finished with a bang - the Quesillo. If you are expecting the standard, heavy, Tenerife Quesillo (caramel flan), then think again. This was beautifully presented, with layers of Greek yoghurt and fresh passionfruit, and topped

23rd November - 29th November 2018 with a Quesillo mousse. It was my favourite dish of the meal. All three layers worked in complete harmony with one another, with the tartness of the yoghurt, the sweetness of the mousse, and the rich passionfruit. It’s a really nice change at the end of a meal to feel completely full up, but not

over-indulged. The food here is good for you, and it fuels your body in the right way. They use high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients, and it’s clear they don’t add extra calories and sugar to the meals, to try to enhance the flavour. It’s not needed, because they serve healthy, wellbalanced food that is

extremely tasty. The Fuel RestoBar serves food all day, so, if you are looking for a tasty breakfast, a healthy dinner or an in-between, workout snack without having a guilty conscience, then it’s the perfect place to come. Calle Roques del Salmor 7, Activate Sports Club, 38679 Costa Adeje

‘Fakes’ shatter honey industry PRODUCTS from China, said to be “fakes”, are destroying Cordoba’s honey industry, according to angry farmers, who say their profits are 50% down this year. The Far East produce, which often consists of mostly rice or corn syrup, is imported at much cheaper prices, making local products less competitive and cutting beekeepers’ profits drastically. Lorenzo Ruiz, head of Cordoba’s beekeeping sector of the Union of Farmers, said the volume of honey produced in the province was down 40-50% compared with last year, describing the situation as “fatal”. He added: “We cannot

compete. Not a kilo has been sold, so the warehouses are full. Multi-nationals are bringing products from other countries, mainly China, which already account for 80% of the honey consumed in Spain.” The price of Cordoban honey has fallen from 3.804.50 euros a kilo to just 2.20 euros, while Chinese honey, per kilo, costs between 80 cents and 1.10 euros. Around 300 families in Cordoba supplement their income with beekeeping, and there are 432 farms with 58,000 hives, generating annual revenue of about two million euros.

K9 News LOVELY Arya is a medium-sized dog who is looking for a new home. She is about two years old, so has plenty of energy and life in her. She came into the kennels as one of a litter of puppies, accompanied by mum, Peggy. The others all found new homes very quickly, leaving poor Arya on her own. Nevertheless, she is very good with the other dogs and soon made some new kennel mates. Although she is still young and very energetic, she has the potential to be a very-well-behaved dog. Arya is attending weekly training classes, to learn basic obedience and other good-behaviour traits. She will require lots of exercise in her new home, and would, ideally, need one with space to run around. She is also very playful and loves a good cuddle! She can be a bit timid at first, so will need time to get to know possible adopters, before being homed. After a short while, she is completely comfortable around new people. She is

Arya not the best of dogs with children, so we recommend she goes to a house without them! Meet Gabriella Dog of the week – Max! HI. My name is Max and I'm a Beagle. I'm about eight years old, very sweet and very calm - and I love children.

THIS beautiful girl is Gabriella. She is a fouryear-old, grey, dappled Great Dane. She was rescued from a very-small apartment, and it was obvious she had been used for breeding. She is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves cuddles and kisses. She's great with people and other dogs, and would make a lovely, family pet. If you would like to foster or adopt Gabriella, please contact us on 667 621 875 or 667 621 727, to arrange a visit.

I am used to having dog friends too, and being surrounded by cats. I really don't understand why my previous family abandoned me. Please give me the chance to prove how gorgeous I am, and become your new, forever friend. Dog-walking club Every Saturday, the dogs have a fabulous time with the walkers, and are looking forward to going out for a wander again tomorrow, from 9am-1pm. Please feel free to pop along, even if it’s just for a chat. If you have any questions, WhatsApp Oceana on 0033 659 242 572, for further details. Please look for Micky Always microchip! ONCE again, it has been a very busy week at the refuge, with so many dogs arriving in various states of health.

EVERY day, Linda, one of our volunteers, helps cats, kittens and people through Cats Welfare. Now, though, she is asking for your help! Her beloved cat Micky has been missing since 9th November. He is microchipped, and wearing a collar with a tag, stating his name and phone number. A 200-euro reward is being offered, for any information leading to his safe return. He's eight years old and neutered, and is very friendly and street-wise. He went missing in Palm Mar, where he is well known to people, dogs and cats alike. Nobody has seen him, and Linda fears he may have been taken and left outside the area. Please keep a look-out for him; he has distinct markings. If you have any news regarding his whereabouts, please call Linda on 603 117 494, or send a message via Facebook (Cats Welfare Tenerife). Adoptions We have lots of adorable kittens

available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, forever homes! As well as an abundance of kittens, we have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone's sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook. Alternatively, ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. As previously mentioned, all cats go for a week's trial, in your home. Jigsaws required! We urgently need jigsaw puzzles to sell in our shop. Please have a dig around at home, and drop them in to us. Can't get there? Ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he'll arrange collection.

Shop volunteers needed We need more volunteers to join our friendly team. The sessions are 10am-2pm and 2-6pm, and two people are on a shift at all times. There are drinks available, and goodies in the fridge! If you have some free time and would like to help our cause, please send us a private message via Facebook (Cats Welfare Tenerife), call/WhatsApp Sharon on 662 524 006, or pop into the shop. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Tuesday Crafters laugh way to a huge donation

DESPITE constant rain, the Tuesday Crafters’ Christmas Fair turned out to be a real hoot at El Paso Bar, Castle Harbour.

True, it was a big squeeze, though cosy, with staff and supporters enjoying a lot of laughs. And the end result was even more joyful, because the group raised a fabulous 613.80 euros, plus a further 190 euros from its Tuesday Crafters’ group donations. The grand 803.80-euro total will be donated to F.A.C.T (Fighting Against Cancer Tenerife). Organisers Andrea Blundell and Doris Gonzales Edwards said: “We’re proud of everyone who took part, and supported us on such a wet day.”

Small dogs, big dogs, some microchipped, but, mostly, not microchipped, making it impossible for us to find their owners. All had come from the streets, and some even had collars on. Please do ensure that your pet is microchipped and the information is correct and up to date. This ensures that your pet can be returned to you, should it get lost. Shoebox treats! With Christmas just around the corner, we have started a campaign to ask our friends and supporters to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs, such as dog treats, tinned dog food for our older dogs, puppy milk, dog toys and chews.

Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge, so it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to our 230 dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge on 20th December between 2-5pm, or call 687 905 511, to arrange for your donation to be collected. Please write your name

on the box, so that we know who kindly donated. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219, or 602 463 242 between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you'll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. Parking lines and road markings in Spain

By Emma

from Motorworld

A L T H O U G H Spain is in Europe, sometimes you may feel that their road signs, signals and road markings are not. We are going to simplify them. The main reason for road markings is usually to denote the separation of the sides of a road, or changes in the type of road. They also provide drivers with information (when they are observed and acted on correctly) of any potential risks ahead, or changes in the road. Continuous (or solid) white line: When you see this type of line in the middle of the road, you are not allowed to cross it. In effect, your mind

THE Spanish Government has announced a raft of measures to tackle the nation’s obesity problem, including a change in the way food is labelled. And it will be following in the footsteps of other European countries by adopting the Nutri-Score traffic-light, food-labelling system. Maria Luisa Carcedo, Minister of Health,

you should be registering this as a wall that is not passable. A longitudinal mark, consisting of two, continuous white lines has the same meaning. So far, so good. No surprises! Many people living in the south of the island will have noticed (especially in the Las Chafiras area) this type of line on the exit from the motorway, and you are not allowed to turn into another road, by crossing over the line. There is one exception, however, and that is in order to pass a cyclist, giving them the minimum distance when there is no oncoming traffic, and it is safe to do so. Common sense plays a huge part in the latter comment. A broken white line: This is intended as a guide to keep you on the correct side of the road. You are permitted to cross this type of line to pass vehicles or cyclists, as long as your manoeuvre does not impede other motorists, and you can overtake quickly and return safely to your lane in the shortest time possible, taking into account the speed limits. These lines are also used to indicate an approach to a dangerous or hazardous

area, or location. The distances between the lines are somewhat shorter than the normal ones, and are often slightly wider. They can also indicate a special lane for certain vehicles eg buses, and, in general, these lines will be significantly wider. Double solid white lines: These have the same purpose as single ones, but denote that traffic in both directions must not cross onto the other side of the road. As in the UK, if the line is broken on one side, in certain places, traffic travelling in that direction can overtake, provided it is safe, but this doesn't apply to the traffic on the other side. Stop line:

This is a self-explanatory line which is solid, and usually accompanied by an octantal “Stop” sign, or words written on the road. Vehicles must stop and give way to traffic on the main road, or, if at pedestrian lights or a crossing, they must stop and adhere to the rules relating to the signs or signals. Please note that motorcyclists and cyclists have to put a foot down on the ground, to indicate that they have stopped correctly. Police have been known to issue fines where there are stop signs, with no other traffic around, and a motorist has not actually stopped. Christmas is coming, so ... Give-way line:

It’s green for lean as ‘traffic-lights’ cut down obesity Consumption and Social Welfare, announced the news last Monday. She also introduced other new initiatives, designed to promote good nutrition and physical activity, along

with preventing obesity. These include measures, for schools and institutes, to prevent the sale of foods and beverages with a high content of sugar, saturated and transfatty acids, salt and calories. And the advertising of unhealthy foods aimed at under-15s will be limited, through the self-regulation of advertising. Ms Carcedo said the Nutri-Score system “will provide citizens with more accurate information on nutritional quality”, adding: “This information will allow citizens to compare with other similar products easily, and make an informed and motivated decision to follow a healthier diet.” Last February, the

Spanish Government, and the country’s food industry, announced plans to cut the content of sugar, salt and fat in more than 3,500 food and drink products over the next three years. The industry said it would cut the ratios of those ingredients by around 10%, having received the voluntary

This is a broken line, normally used where there is reduced or obstructed visibility, and you must not cross until it is safe and clear. There are two types of give-way lines. One is thicker than the other, so, if you are at an intersection and there are two give-ways and a stop, the thinner giveway has right of way first, then the other give-way, and. lastly, the stop line. Pedestrian crossings: This is a series of wide, white lines, arranged parallel to the axis of the road, where drivers must allow pedestrians to cross. These are just a few road markings, but failing to adhere to them can result in pretty-harsh fines. Safe motoring, folks.

commitment of more than 500 companies. But the Spanish authorities have not said when they expect the Nutri-Score scheme to be introduced, or whether it will be mandatory or voluntary. The system was established in France earlier this year, and will also be displayed in Belgium and Portugal. In September, Spainbased grocer Eroski announced proposals for its suppliers of own-label products to use the NutriScore nutrition labels, placed on packs by some manufacturers and retailers in France and Belgium.

If the plan is endorsed by the co-operative retailer’s suppliers, the first products using the labels will go on sale before the end of the year, said Eroski. The Nutri-Score code comprises a graph, with gradual colouring from green to red in five levels, in the style of a traffic light. The green colours identify the healthiest foods, while the reds are those of lower nutritional quality. Each product will highlight the colour that corresponds to it, based on its content of sugars, saturated fats, salt, calories, fibre and proteins.

CD Tenerife

Tenerife swept aside by class of Osasuna GOALS from Juan Villar and Oier saw off lacklustre Tenerife, and enabled the home side to reach the play-off positions for the first time this season. The Tenerife team, suffering with casualties, were lucky not to slip back into the relegation places, thanks to the convincing 3-1 defeat of Cordoba by Cadiz. Osasuna are undefeated this season at El Sadar, where the club celebrated their 98th anniversary with three more points. Yet Tenerife had the first real chance in the ninth minute. Luis Perez played an excellent through-ball into the path of Naranjo, who failed to take advantage of being one-on-one with Osasuna keeper Rubén Martínez. The Galician goalkeeper not only saved his team, but changed the face of the match, as Osasuna scored on the counter-attack, almost immediately.

Osasuna 2 CD Tenerife 0

Barja took the ball deep into the Tenerife half and cut it back across goal, to where Juan Villar was waiting. And there was no mistake from the former Tenerife player, who scored his third consecutive home goal at El Sadar, playing the ball through Aveldaño’s

legs and in, off the post. Keeper Dani made an athletic attempt to save it, but the ball had already crossed the line. Malbasic hit back for Tenerife with a solo run down the left side towards the Osasuna goal-line, but he had no support, and the home team regained possession easily. The biggest battle was in midfield, with high pressure from Osasuna, who controlled the game throughout. In time added on at the end of the first half, Tenerife received a blow after an action-replay of the first goal. A Naranjo shot hit Aridane, and Villar started a counter, which was con-

tinued by Torres. It led to a corner for Osasuna, which was launched immediately. Camille received the ball and shot, but it was blocked by the Tenerife defence, unfortunately, only as far as Oier, who rocketed it into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Osasuna resumed after the break, looking for a third goal to seal victory. Villar was the first to try, after three minutes, and Torres was the next to shoot, a few minutes later, only to put the ball over the bar.

Malbasic battled as a lone figure up front for Tenerife, and put a good chance inches wide of Rubén’s goal after a poor clearance by Aridane. He had another opening in the 75th minute, one on one with the Osasuna keeper, but he stopped the danger. Tenerife were, at least, encouraged with these chances, but the hometeam coach made some changes, bringing on Vidal for Barja, and tightened the defence with three centres and two wide men. The last 15 minutes were very similar, with Villar having a good chance, only to find the side-netting, and Malbasiç striking another shot that hit the post. Ultimately, it was a comfortable win for a team who are climbing the league table, and are now in seventh place. Meanwhile, Tenerife coach Oltra and his men are still feeling the pressure at the other end of the table. They sit in 18th place, and are again in danger of slipping into the bottom three. Their next match is a must-win against a Rayo Majadahonda team high in confidence, after backto-back successes against Numancia and Almeria.

Alfonso Serrano steps down

TENERIFE will be without the services of technical director Alfonso Serrano, following a string of bad results. The early-season scores led to the dismissal of coach Joseba Etxeberria, in favour of José Luis Oltra. And the board have decided that the current move is the only possible step to face the next winter transfer window with guarantees. Serrano leaves quietly, after his future was much discussed online by fans. The name of his possible replacement is unknown.

Bristol Bob’s a belter! SUTERS 20:30 Crew drew 4-4 at home against high-flying Gaffers on Friday night, after a tough clash, which they had anticipated. It was the most welcome outcome for Suters, as the visitors kept their cool to take the trebles. Daddy Cool hit another 180 for Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who took home a 7-1 victory over Legends, to go joint-top, alongside The Pub, who brushed Sandys aside 8-0 at home, with Paddy being Grizzled by the home captain! Bristol Bob was in good form at Clouseau’s, leading his team to a trebles victory, and a vital 4-4 draw against league toppers The

Loch-In Bullseyes. The home team have put a good run of results together, to jump to third in the table. The Loch-In ‘A’, who hosted Palms Pool Bar, found Wayne in sparkling form with two maximums, but he endured a hard-fought game of singles against Alan, who lost 3-2. But Alan avenged the defeat as Palms threw their best darts of the night to win the trebles, as a consolation in the 7-1 scoreline. Ourplace Playboys upped their game against Picasso’s, to win 5-3. Pas O Nadas ‘B’ got back to winning ways, travelling to Camping Nauta and succeeding 6-2 against Nomads.

World Cup Football

It’s still looking cloudy Sánchez asks Morocco and Portugal to form a World-Cup alliance

TENERIFE have finished the first third of the season with just 13 points, the same total they had in the fateful 20102011 season, when they were relegated to Segunda B. After 14 games played, they are just above the relegation zone, with 13 points from a possible 42, and many followers fear that the same fate is stalking the club! On December 8th, 2010, Tenerife finished 14 games in the relegation places, with only three victories to their credit, four draws and seven defeats. Last weekend Oltra’s men ended his match at El Sadar with a 2-0 defeat. But, thanks to a stumble by

Cordoba, the island’s main team has not slipped into the league table’s danger spots again, although they have been able to win just two games, draw a whopping seven and lose five. These are poor numbers, comparable with those of the season in which Tenerife lost their place in professional football. The side, now in 18th place, have achieved only 30.9% of the available points, and the main problem is still a lack of goals. The club’s top scorers are Malbasic, Naranjo and Bryan, all with only two goals apiece! Another obvious problem is that in the 14 games played, not one has seen the same starting X1. Milla and keeper Dani are the only players to have appeared in all the matches.

PEDRO Sánchez has given Morocco a chance to make a joint bid, alongside Spain and Portugal, to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Executive sources said the Spanish Prime Minister made the offer during a state visit to Rabat, where he met King Mohammed VI and Prime Minister Saadeddine Al Othmani. The initiative was, reportedly, well received by Moroccan authorities. But if the triple bid does come about, it will face other rival partnerships, although the same sources said it would still be in the running. That’s because Spain and Portugal could attract favourable votes from many European and Latin American countries, while Morocco could get backing from African and Arab nations. Luis Rubiales, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), met Sánchez on 13th September, along with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. That was when Rubiales asked the Spanish leader

for help in bidding for the 2028 UEFA European Championship, or the 2030 World Cup. At that time, the Spanish Federation were contemplating a joint bid with Portugal. But that partnership had already been tested for the 2018 World Cup, which, ultimately, went to Russia. In June this year, Morocco bid, unsuccessfully, for the 2026 World Cup, which will finally take place in the US, Mexico and Canada. But Morocco had initially considered running together with Algeria and Tunisia. The candidacy documents presented Morocco as a country “at a global crossroads… a special place where East meets West and Europe meets Africa, just 14km from the Spanish coast”. The failed bid also said that if Morocco were chosen, it would be “a FIFA World Cup for all of Africa; a catalyst for the pride, progress and cohesion of an entire continent”. The report listed existing facilities and plans for new ones, including “the highly-

anticipated Grand Stade of Casablanca, with seating for 93,000 spectators”. The last great football tournament staged by Spain was the 1982 World Cup. And of all the nations who have won the most prestigious event of all, only Britain and Spain have hosted it just once. Italy staged the event in 1934 and 1990, France in 1938 and 1998, and Germany in 1974 and 2006. But poor old Morocco have made half-a-dozen bids, always unsuccessfully. But if the joint Spanish-Portuguese-Moroccan bid for 2030 prospers, it will almost certainly face other rival partnerships. In July 2017, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay announced that they would seek to host the tournament together. And South Korea have made public overtures to North Korea, Japan and China. Meanwhile, Ireland and the UK are considering a joint bid, under the sponsorship of UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin.
