Safeguard your residency Cont. from Front The meeting took place on Tuesday evening, at Villa Cortés Hotel, in Playa de las Américas, and the Ambassador said the timing was opportune. That’s because British Prime Minister Theresa May had finalised a deal last weekend, approved by the EU 27, on the UK’s exit from the European Union. The Ambassador sought to allay any worries people have about changes in status, and pensions, as well as the rights of business owners here in the Canary Islands. “Register, register, register”, was Manley’s repeated call to residents, not just on the “padrón” of local councils, but with the national police/ foreigners’ office. He stressed that the Embassy was aware that the official numbers of Britons living in Spain did not reflect the reality! If they are registered as residents, he told them, “what the withdrawal treaty does, once it is ratified by the British Parliament and the European Parliament, is to put the guarantees set out in that treaty”. He added: “Your current rights as citizens here will then be embodied in
international law. There can be no firmer basis for the protection of your rights… enabling you and your families to continue living here, in the manner in which you have lived here, hitherto.” Earlier, the Ambassador, accompanied by Canarian President President Fernando Clavijo, spoke with a group of Tenerife South mayors and councillors, along with local
business representatives, on the public’s right to vote in local elections. The Ambassador, who is in the Canary Islands for four days, visiting five islands, said that though it was one of the few rights not currently guaranteed under the withdrawal treaty, talks with Spanish authorities were on-going. And the Embassy, he added, hoped that UK citizens in Spain would be able to
continue to participate in local politics here, both as voters and candidates. Among those also present were Arona Mayor José Julian Mena, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Councillors Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Ermitas Moreira, Zebenzui Chinea Linares (Adeje), and also David Perez (Arona). They had all gathered to
discuss issues of relevance to them, considering the many thousands of Britons who live in their boroughs. Also in attendance were Embassy representatives Charmaine Arbouin, Consul for the South of Spain and the Canaries, Vice-Consul Helen Keating, along with the Consular staff, who deal with British residents here, on a daily basis. Thieving foursome finished spree, potless and arrested!
FOUR men, who had been driving around a couple of neighbouring municipalities on Tuesday, looking to go on a thieving spree, were eventually arrested by Adeje’s Local Police. The four had also been in the Guia de Isora town of Playa San Juan, during the morning, as well as visiting various Adeje shops. In one shop, it was reported, one of the thieves used a firearm to intimidate the staff, although it was later discovered to be a replica
gun. The group comprised three adults and one minor, and they drove around the South in a top-end Mercedes AMG, which was owned by a person outside
the group. While the four were out and about, they attempted an armed robbery at Calleo Salvaje’s Pearly Grey hotel, where they
held up the receptionist, threatening her with the replica firearm while demanding cash. But they left the premises emptyhanded, because there was none there. Subsequently, they went to a nearby service station, where, finally, the police were notified about them. From that moment, stopcontrols were placed at several points, and it wasn’t long before Local Police detected the vehicle and ordered it to stop. The Mercedes occupants
vacated the car immediately, and officers then searched it, only to find the so-called firearm, as well as various handkerchiefs, used to cover their faces. There were also different types of tools, which could have been used in the intended robberies, where needed. The arrested foursome, all Adeje residents, were handed over by Local Police to Guardia Civil officers, who are now handling the case.

Former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas
PM Rajoy, who gave evidence
How Rajoy’s party splashed the cash! A CASH payment for the Prime Minister’s suits, a 300,000-euro bung to a former treasurer… and a back-hander to pay for an elite wedding. These are just three of the illegal “caja B” cash payments, made by the then PP party during Mariano Rajoy’s tenure. The notes, revealed in a series of hand-written notes
and documents, and kept by disgraced former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas, demonstrate how the party was funded, illegally, on a national scale. The records, dubbed the “Operacion Kitchen” papers, have only now been made public, after being published in national newspaper El Mundo. The secret dossier was, allegedly, stolen from Barcenas by police and not handed over to the
courts, in the recent Gurtel investigation into corruption. A Madrid judge has now opened an “urgent inquiry”, to look into why these documents have only just been made public. Judge Jose de la Mata has demanded an explanation from the Home Office, into how police and the PP party, allegedly, conspired to keep the papers hidden. The documents, apparently, were stolen from Barcenas,
who is serving 33 years in prison for creaming off 1.24m euros in bribes. Barcenas instructed his wife to hide the huge dossier in their house, inside furniture and in his private offices. However, she confided in the couple’s long-standing chauffeur about the documents’ hiding place. Unknown to them, though, their driver had become a National Police mole, photocopying all the documents and handing
them over, at their insistence. The papers reveal how the police, under disgraced former chief Jose Villarejo, then chose, shockingly, to conceal the evidence from the judiciary. Rajoy, then the Prime Minister, became the first serving leader in Spain to testify in a criminal case, when he was grilled on Gurtel’s dealings. But he always denied receiving cash payments.
Knife thug stages violent Car torched by the attack on trio of victims thieves who stole it
GUARDIA Civil officers from San Bartolomé, Lanzarote, have arrested a 32-year-old man and charged him with three violentrobbery offences. One of his victims, aged 30, called the Emergency Service himself after being attacked in the early hours of last Wednesday, at Avenida de Playa Honda, Lanzarote. An ambulance was sent to the scene, and medics had to stabilise the man because of the volume of blood he had lost during the attack. He was then transferred to the José Molina Orosa Hospital, swiftly, to be treated for the serious injuries he sustained. The Guardia Civil were at the hospital to collect the necessary information about the attack, as well as to obtain a physical
description of the attacker, so they could begin their search. The victim told the police that he and his attacker were engaged in a short conversation when, suddenly, he was threatened with a knife by the man. Suddenly, he cut the unsuspecting victim on the neck and forehead, then stole his bike and rode off, leaving him in a state of shock. Guardia Civil officers began a search of the area, with the help of the Local and National police, who, together, located the individual in Arrecife. The Guardia arrested him immediately and charged him with violent robbery. Once he was arrested, a search revealed that he was still carrying the knife, as well as a mobile phone. It then came to light that he had also attacked two people
the previous night. Reports of those violent robberies in Arrecife had been given to the cops, just hours before the knifeman’s arrest, and both attacks bore the same characteristics as the latest crime. Further investigation of the attacker revealed that the mobile phone belonged to a 65-year-old woman from La Concha. She was also assaulted, and suffered a stab wound in the shoulder… and all for a mobile phone! The knifeman’s other victim was a 60-yearold female tourist, who suffered facial injuries, as well as losing her dentures. She was, brutally, punched in the face by the attacker, once he discovered that she had nothing of value worth stealing. The thug is still in police custody, and will stay there until a trial can be conducted.
A CAR, stolen by delinquents a few weeks ago in Santa Cruz, finished up in flames, next to the TF-5 motorway in the North. It was spotted, ablaze, at around 3pm on Monday, having been reported missing three weeks ago. The thieves left the vehicle in the vicinity of Sergeants Street, adjacent to the motorway.
Officers believe it was set on fire by the carthieves to destroy any evidence, but they are not sure whether the car was used to carry out other criminal acts. Fire-service officers arrived at the scene, and used some 500 litres of water to extinguish the flames, making the car safe for removal. The National Police have opened an investigation and are looking into the facts.

20 years of storm damage cost Canaries 602m euros
STORMS across the Canary Islands over the past two decades have caused enormous damage, at a cost of more than 600 million euros (at 2018 prices), plus last week’s estimated 2m-euro bill in the North of Tenerife. Half the damage was caused by Tropical Storm Delta,
which passed over these islands in 2005, with winds of up to 250km/h. The Chair of the Disaster Risk Reduction, along with the University of La Laguna’s Department of Geography, have staged the Spanish Climatology Association’s 11th Conference. It comprised a study on the damage of meteorological events of extraordinary range, which have affected the Canaries between 1996 and 2016. And these breathtaking facts emerged.
It has now been published by the State Meteorological Agency, which takes, as its main source of information, the data bank of the Insurance Compensation Consortium. That’s the public company which accounts for most of the damages from extraordinary phenomena, relating to homes, vehicles, or other types of properties insured, such as those concerning the agricultural industry. Over this research period, the Consortium paid the
Canary Islands community the equivalent of 270.36m euros, at 2018 prices, because it updates the figures, according to each year’s inflation, to those harmed by almost 45,934 claims of three types: floods, sea damage and atypical cyclonic storms, such as those with gusts of over 120km/h. Three years alone accounted for 72% of this figure: 2002 was the year of floods in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, leading to eight deaths; 2005, with Storm Delta across all the islands, followed by 2010, with
three episodes of heavy rains in February, affecting Tenerife’s El Rosario municipality. The research study reports that most damage was caused by the ravages of the sea, with 133m euros (49.29% of the total). This was followed by floods, 122.3m euros (45.24%) and cyclonic storms, 15m euros (5.56%). And last week’s dramatic floods, featuring waves of up to 40ft high, wrecked some seafront apartments on the northern coast, and affected many residents and business premises.

NEWS IN BRIEF Knife-attack man serious
A MAN aged 36, seriously injured after being involved in a knife attack in Arona, was taken to the Los Cristianos medical centre by an Emergency Service ambulance, suffering from a nasty head wound and other injuries in that area. The incident happened at around 7.40pm last Friday evening at Calle Gran Canaria, in El Fraile. The Local Police assisted in the emergency, but Guardia Civil officers have taken charge of the investigation.

50-euro fraudsters caught by the cops
Cops’ huge stash of hash
MALAGA’S National Police have arrested a 30-yearold Frenchman for suspected drug-trafficking. He had crashed his car into an SUV in Malaga’s Las Pedrizas district, where police were available to detain him. They discovered that the vehicle had a fake licence plate, and later established that it had been stolen in Switzerland. Officers found 15 packages of hashish, weighing 450kg, and 28kg of marijuana, held in several backpacks inside the car. The suspect, reportedly, broke his leg in the incident, and was taken to a Malaga hospital.
Dead man found in street
THE body of a man was found by neighbours on Wednesday, in the middle of a Santa Cruz street. They discovered the 60-year-old’s corpse in the middle of Calle de la Marina, in the centre of Tenerife’s capital. The neighbours called the Emergency Services for help, immediately, and the Local Police, along with the social services, have since taken charge of the situation.
Surfer’s sea rescue
A MAN was injured last Saturday morning while surfing in La Laguna’s El Arenal beach, in Punta el Hidalgo. The emergency fire-service officers were called to help rescue the 39-year-old from the sea. The surfer, who injured his back, had to be transferred to the university hospital for further treatment and observation.
TWO Britons were arrested by Arona’s Local Police, who discovered that both men, aged 20 and 21, were attempting to spend false 50euro notes in the touristic area of Las Americas. While the police were patrolling the Avenida
Puig Livina, the main road running through Veronicas, they were alerted by an African street-seller that one of the two young lads had just tried to buy some glasses and a cap, using a false note. And the African told the cops that he man had taken out more than one note from his pocket. The police began to search the area after the street seller’s detailed description, and, before long, the police
spotted the two men and followed them. The fraudsters attempted to get away from the patrol car by picking up their pace and walking quickly. But the officers soon caught up with them and carried out a personal search. To their surprise, they found 23, fake 50-euro notes, hidden inside the men’s pockets. The pair were arrested and taken to the police cells in Las Americas for further questioning.
Pension fraudsters held after their weekly fiddle THE National Police have uncovered a distasteful, sixmillion-euro fraud, on mainland Spain and in the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, by people collecting the weekly pensions of people already deceased. One suspect was reported to have received pension benefits for around 20 years, posing as the deceased person by copying his characteristics with disguises, and even using his walking frame. The police have arrested nine of the 46 people
identified, in the Canary Islands and other autonomous communities of Spain. They are said to have been responsible for a total of 53 crimes, concerning falsification of documents, fraud and misappropriation. Most of these involved, identified through an investigation called Operation Libitina II, were the deceased’s relatives, although some friends were also involved. To claim the pension money, each of the accused hid the death of the pensioner from the Pension Authority, even falsifying certificates and signatures of the deceased, so that they could withdraw the cash. The investigation was led by
agents of the Social Security Research Department of the Central Unit of Economic and Fiscal Crime (UDEF) of the National Police, in collaboration with the Secretary of State for Social Security. The probe began after police received several complaints from various areas of Spain, where reports of possible fraud were made to the General Treasury of Social Security. The National Police reported that the pension fraud was identified in 17 Spanish provinces, including Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, and Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. The mainland provinces included Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga.

Urgent need for new Los Cris bus station
9 CW
Residents forced to leave storm’s danger building
RESIDENTS from one of the apartment blocks affected by the huge freak waves in Garachico last week, began evacuating the building on Tuesday morning after, two huge cracks were spotted in the columns, at the building’s centre. A worker from a refurbishment company working there was said to have noticed the cracks, and, after a closer inspection, it was confirmed that the building was at risk of collapsing. Neighbours were advised to leave the building as soon as they could, and the block soon emptied, to prevent further loss or damage.
ARONA Council is pressing for a new bus station to be built in Los Cristianos, to replace the present set-up, and improve mobility. Los Cristianos is the communication hub for the South, which is why the local council is asking the Cabildo to replace it with a modern station, capable of absorbing the demand of public transport generated in the locality.
THE Guardia Civil, based in Gran Canaria’s Puerto Rico-Morgan, have been working in collaboration with the judicial police and the citizen-protection units, in a joint action named Operation Vortex. A 31-year-old man, identified as AGP and a known resident from Madrid, was arrested for, allegedly, setting fire to his ex-girlfriend’s car, after she refused to continue their sentimental relationship. The Operation began the day the former girlfriend, identified as ACA, made a police report, The woman, who lives in Gran Canaria, told the police on 9th September that her car had been set alight. She also informed them that she was being harassed, constantly, by her ex-boyfriend. She said he was extremely computer-literate, especially regarding internet security, and that he was making socialmedia threats to her. At the time of the initial
The council also wants to see services adapted in terms of schedules and frequencies, as demanded by residents. Lines to be improved include the 480, 420, 471, 415 and 470, which benefit Valle San Lorenzo, El Fraile, Guaza and Guargacho. A Council spokesman said: “These increases in schedules and frequencies benefit the whole region, and especially the current stops in Los Cristianos bus station, which is now too small. not only for a town with
the number of inhabitants of the municipality, but because it is now the main communication mode of public transport by highway of the South. “This is why we are asking the Cabildo to help improve mobility and traffic queues in the locality.” The present site is used by thousands of daily travellers, including residents of Arona, as well as workers from other areas and tourists, making it one of the most important on the island, after Santa

police report, there was no evidence to demonstrate that her former boyfriend was guilty of torching the vehicle, or the social-media harassment which ACA was enduring. In fact, the police were actually suspicious that ACA had some involvement in setting her vehicle alight.
But once the investigation began, circumstances led the police to suspect the fire was caused purposely. Criminology specialists and fire investigators were added to the investigation team, and, together with the vehicle’s forensic evidence, they discovered that the car had been torched intentionally.
Cruz and La Laguna. Leopoldo Díaz Oda, Municipal Area of Transport Councillor, said: “The need for a station in these conditions, and with parking spaces, is more urgent than ever, so that we can offer facilities with modern services, adequate for the volume of passengers.” Arona Council says a new site will probably be needed, with a different access to alleviate traffic jams, as well as circulation within Los Cristianos. From that moment, officers focused their investigation on ACA’s 31-year-old expartner, from Madrid. The officers discovered that AGP had taken a flight from Madrid to Gran Canaria, returning home the same day. Thanks to the operation, an arrest was made on 13th November. When the police located AGP, he had burns on his face and body from the petrol he used to set fire to the car. The police also discovered that burning the car was pre-meditated. And, after further investigation, AGP was linked to another arson attack in similar circumstances, involving another former girlfriend in Madrid, in 2014. The man has made a court appearance in Madrid, as well as in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, and precautionary measures for the protection of the Gran Canaria victim have been put in place, prohibiting AGP’s re-entry to Las Palmas.
Spain has cheapest juice in all Europe SPAIN’S electricity is, officially, the cheapest in Europe, which must come as a surprise to householders because it is usually among the most expensive on the continent.
Rising prices for households and traders have led to the Spanish Government creating a battery of measures to bring costs down, and protect vulnerable consumers from being left without power because they cannot afford to pay their bills. Meanwhile, the price per megawatt per hour (MWh) has dropped to the EU’s lowest, at 65.90 euros. The price of Spain’s “power pool” was well below the 84.10 euros-per-MWh seen in Germany, the 84.80 in Italy, France’s 90.50 and the UK’s 87.70. This was largely down to a fall in renewable energy production across the continent, through to a sudden drop in temperatures, with minus figures overnight being registered in several countries north of the Pyrénées, compared with Mediterranean and southern Spain’s 13ºC at night. And Spain’s wind and solar power production is now among the highest in Europe because of mild temperatures.

ANOTHER boatload of immigrants, with 24 people squeezed aboard, arrived in the early hours of Tuesday morning at Lanzarote’s Costa Bartolome. The small, inflatable vessel turned up at about 4.45am, and the Emergency Services were advised by the Local Police. Then, together with the Guardia Civil, they found four refugees on the Playa Honda beach, and a couple more at Playa Guacimeta, both in the San Bartomole area. The quartet helped officers locate their fellow immigrants, among them a woman and her four-year-old daughter. The woman was transferred to a nearby hospital, to be treated for dizziness, while the remainder were taken to Arrecife’s National Police station, waiting to hear from the immigration department.

… still they keep coming!
Spain’s royal coinage Look, no hands! could be a goldmine! A SOUVENIR coin, featuring Spain’s entire Royal family for the first time, has been released, with denominations of between 10-400 euros. It forms part of a series of coins, minted to celebrate King Felipe VI’s 50th birthday year, and featuring a key moment in his life. One shows HRH Felipe bearing the Olympic flag, and another shows him swearing allegiance to the Spanish Constitution. A third depicts the King and his wife, Queen Letizia, on their 2004 wedding day, and a fourth features the monarch and his direct heir and eldest daughter, Princess Leonor of Asturias, who turned 13, just a month ago. The collection also includes
one of the whole family: King Felipe, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and the latter’s younger sister, the Infanta Sofía, 11. It is based on a photograph of them on holiday in Mallorca in the summer of 2017. The family-picture piece is a 50-euro coin, but the face value of each of them does not necessarily reflect their sale price.

For instance, the coin featuring Felipe VI swearing allegiance to the Magna Carta is already on sale for 1,500 euros, plus IVA. And others will almost certainly cost a lot more than their stated worth. This is partly because of their uniqueness, partly because of the intricate technique involved, and partly because, unlike mainstream currency, they come in solid gold or silver, as well as with coloured elements. One of the “colour” coins is the 10-euro version, showing the King carrying the Spanish flag during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. And the Royal coat of arms, on the backs of some of the coins, is also in colour. Photo: The Royal Mint
A DRIVERLESS bus hit the road last weekend in Madrid, run by electricity and launched in the central Plaza de Colón.
It seats up to 15 people and travels at a top speed of 40km/h. And there was little danger to other
motorists, even if it had broken down. The bus was on a closed circuit within the square, and passengers had a few minutes to ride in it, without having to pay. It was one of many attractions at the Imperdible03 Cities and Innovation Fair, which took place in the Plaza de Colón and the Fernán Gómez Cultural Centre.

Guardia Civil’s life-savers

As such, they can be used by “anybody”, because independent medical decisions are not necessary. The Guardia Civil have 189 defibrillators, spread across the country. And, since the beginning of last year, 400 training talks have been given.

A Foundation spokesperson said: ‘There is a maximum time of 10 minutes to act, yet the possibilities are reduced between 8-10% every minute. Big flu warning in the Canaries Troubled Ryanair face new problem RYANAIR has been found guilty in Spain of violating the cabin crews’ right to strike, and of breaching worksafety regulations.
THE flu has arrived in the Canary Islands and has already reached preepidemic levels, with two serious cases registered. Across the Canaries, between 11-18th November, 25.60 cases have been reported for every 10.000
of the population, And in that time span, two people were admitted into hospital because of the severity of the A (H1N1) virus. One person was reported extremely ill, while on a cruise ship, and the other one was at home. It is understood that the virus will reach its peak among children aged between 0-14 years.
That is why Gonzalo Cabrera, President of the Canarian Paediatric Society in Las Palmas, is reminding people that receiving the flu vaccine would reduce the cases of the disease by thousands, across the islands, even though children transmit the virus for a long time, and at high amounts.
Unions have revealed that the Labour Ministry has threatened to fine the Irish budget airline on this basis, and for obstructing inspections. The company has been found to have been emailing or calling employees, to check whether they were planning to stop work before their planned strikes, on 25-26th July and on 28th September. The Labour Ministry confirmed that it had “given the company notice of infractions”, but refused
to offer further details. For over a year, Ryanair has been clashing with various unions over contracts, pay, and work conditions, with the airline using Irish legislation for its employment agreements, even for those employees based in other countries. In July, strikes by cabin and cockpit crews disrupted 600 flights in Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Ireland and Italy, which affected 100,000 travellers. On 28th September, cabin crew walked out again in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. Ryanair has simply said: “We respect the labour rights of our employees, in accordance with Irish, Spanish and EU legislation.”

Don’t be fooled by a tax-rebate scam
THE Guardia Civil have warned of a social-media scam, in which users are told they can claim up to 3,200 euros from the Ministry of Work and Pensions.
A message doing the rounds on WhatsApp, and other popular sites, potentially, claims that anyone who worked in Spain from 1990 to 2018, solidly, can apply for a tax rebate of overpaid contributions. They are told to click on https://fwcauses.com/es gob, which is not linked to any authority in Spain. The Guardia are not sure what result it will provide, but it is likely to trigger spam, annoying adware or other malware. It might even allow entry
to hackers, exposing users to the risk of identity theft. The message includes spelling and minor grammar mistakes: the Spanish word for “funds”, which is fondos, is spelt as fundos, which is a common sign of a phishing, or other cyberfraud attempts. A warning on the Guardia Civil’s Twitter sight reads: “This fake link, purporting to be from the Ministry of Work, Migrations and Social Security, and announcing a payment of 3,200 euros to anyone who has worked between 1999 [sic] and 2018, is doing the rounds on WhatsApp. “It is FALSE... they won’t give you euros, but you’re sure to get spam (or something worse).” The Guardia Civil uses the hashtag #NoPiques (‘Don’t Fall For It’).
Sick sailor’s mercy flight to a hospital

Parakeet problem? Fury over court ruling on girl’s Snipers will solve it sexual attack
THE actions of an uncle and nephew, who have been cleared by a court of sexual assault, which is the equivalent to rape in Spain, have sparked outrage.
SPANISH environmental experts are suggesting that the answer to Spain’s overloaded parakeet situation is to employ snipers as pestcontrollers, which will horrify birdlovers everywhere. The UK’s daily, The Telegraph, says parakeets have been dubbed an invasive species in Spain and the UK, after pet birds introduced in the 1970s flourished in the wild. Malaga, for example, has
been over-run with 30,000 monk parakeets, prompting experts at a recent environmental forum to suggest snipers. Dailos Hernández-Brito, researcher at the Biological Station of Doñana, the Andalusian national park considered to be Europe’s largest nature reserve, said that affected areas were now considering two options: trapping and extermination, through shooting. The birds are a threat to agriculture, and their screeching is bothering the locals. Also, “the risk of large nests falling from
trees are also a problem in urban areas”. In addition, the birds carry the disease psittacosis, or parrot fever, which affects the lungs. And, while trapping the birds is also an option, Hernández-Brito says that simply shooting them is quicker and “more flexible”. Hiring bird snipers was suggested in other parts of Spain, but plans were rejected, amid protests from animal activists. In July, the town attempted to throw more birds at the problem by introducing Peregrine falcons. But to no avail, it seems.
The court, in Lleida, northeastern Spain, jailed the pair for 4½ years after they plied a woman with drugs and drink, before having sex with her. Their sentencing has re-opened a national debate about rape law in Spain, after the infamous “Wolfpack” sex-attack gang had been cleared of raping a young woman at the San Fermin ‘Running of the Bulls’ festival in Pamplona, more than two years ago. In this latest sexual attack, the two family members were cleared of the more serious offence of sexual assault, because they did not use intimidation or violence. The pair forced a girl into sex and a separate
sexual act, after meeting her in a bar and taking her to nightclub. The court ruled that the men “took advantage of her vulnerable nature, which, added to her consumption of alcohol and anti-depressants, may have weakened her ability to defend herself, thus making the use of violent or intimidatory acts unnecessary”. In April and June this year, there were widespread protests over the “Wolfpack” case, as the five attackers sentenced to nine years were released on bail. This latest sexual case prompted similar outrage online, with one Twitter user, Anne Lauren, writing: “Rape is a violent act in itself, and other acts of violence need not be included for this crime to be taken seriously.”

Comedian who went just a sneeze too far
A COMEDIAN, who has appeared in a Madrid court for blowing his nose on the Spanish flag as part of a TV sketch, could be sent to prison. Spanish TV host Dani Mateo faces serious allegations, following his comical act on La Sexta’s satirical news show, El Intermedio, last month. The judge is looking into whether Mateo committed a crime of offence, or a public affront to Spanish symbols, which is an article in the country’s criminal code, punishable with a fine. But if his behaviour is considered to be a hate crime, he could be jailed for up to four years. The controversy comes as Spanish actor and activist Willy Toledo, faces prosecution “for offending religious sentiments”, after making comments on Facebook, insulting God and the Virgin Mary. In Mateo’s sketch, he joked that the only text which has “general consensus in Spain, is the patient guidelines on a packet of [cold remedy] Frenadol”. As he read out the instructions for the drug, the comedian pretended to sneeze, and blew his nose on the Spanish flag. “Christ, sorry! I didn’t want to offend Spaniards, nor the King, nor the Chinese who sell these rags,” he said jokingly. Mateo then added in jest: “Not rags, I didn’t mean rags.” But the comedian soon became a trending topic on Twitter, where socialmedia users criticised him for the act, causing La Sexta to pull the sketch the following day. Mateo said outside the court: “As a citizen of this country, I’m worried because we are taking a clown to court for doing his job, and that worries me, due to the image it creates of my country and my flag.” The presenter chose not to make a statement in court, which meant the initial hearing lasted just 10 minutes.

Tragic migrant deaths treble in just one year
AT least 631 African migrants have died trying to reach Spain so far this year, which is nearly three times more than in the whole of 2017. And, says the UN migration agency, the situation has become “alarming”. More than 120 migrants, from North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, have arrived in Spain each day during November, following a record month in October with over 350 daily, said the International Organi-
sation for Migration (IOM). “This is usually a time of slowing down on these routes, but it is not happening in Spain,” said IOM spokesman Joel Millman. “Migrants are using smaller and lessseaworthy boats.” About two dozen migrants drowned off the Cadiz coast in November, he added. And the sole survivor of another shipwreck, a teenage boy from Guinea, who is now in hospital with severe hypothermia, told rescuers he was travelling with nine others, including his brother, in an inflatable rowing boat, from Tangiers, Morocco. The arrival of migrants in Europe, in their hundreds

of thousands, has fuelled the rise of far-right parties across the continent in recent years, although numbers have fallen over the past three. But many thousands of people, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, have drowned. So far this year, 104,506 migrants have arrived by sea in Europe and 2,075 have perished, according to the IOM’s latest figures. Both figures are about 66% of last year’s total, and around 25% of the 2016 numbers. But while traffic on the main sea route from Libya to Italy has fallen sharply over the past year, partly because of agreements with

The route from Turkey to Greece, used by more than one million asylum seekers in 2015, was shut, mainly, the following year, through an EU agreement with Turkey. He added: “That is also becoming a dangerous channel for migrants seeking to access Europe.”
Police discovered that she has stolen jewellery worth almost 4,500 euros from a house in which she worked. The head of the investigation said suspicions arose when officers took part in a routine at an establishment, where gold and precious jewellery were bought and sold. In one of these probes, officers noticed that four substantial gold
transactions had taken place, between 8th-16th November. The seller received 1,670, 860, 1,367 and 672 euros, respectively. The cops, who opened an investigation because their suspicions were aroused, were able to locate the family from whom the jewellery originated. They told officers that the woman who sold the stolen items had been working as a carer for an elder member of the family, who had a mental illness. The woman was arrested and charged with theft, and all the items stolen were returned to the rightful owner.

Killer dogs put down, along with four more
SIX dogs, including the pair responsible for the death of two women last week, have been put down for safety’s sake. The decision was taken by the Integral Centre for Animal Welfare of the Community of Madrid after two of the animals had mauled to death a Spanish mother and her grown-up daughter. All six of the animals that resided in the home of the deceased women were euthanised, according to the Ministry of Environment. The dogs responsible for
the horrific deaths were identified as a French Mastiff and an American Staffordshire Terrier. In a veterinary report, compiled in the days after the attack, vets testified to the dogs’ high aggressiveness, the difficulty of handling them, and the lack of documentation, as well as the absence of vaccines against rabies. It was, therefore, decided that the animals presented a danger to the safety of the home-dwellers and the rest of the animals housed there. The damning report described the dogs as
“powerful and aggressive, with the possibility of attacking people or animals.” The regional government ruled that putting the dogs down was necessary, “for the serious and imminent risk to the safety of people, and other animals, as well as for animal-welfare reasons”. The husband of one of the deceased women could be charged with serious negligence following a Guardia Civil probe into the incident, after the owner of the villa in which the animals lived, failed to vaccinate, or licence, the dogs correctly.

Even elephants steer clear of the fire ants
FIRE ants from South America, which can give humans a painful bite, let alone blinding dogs, cats, chickens, jaguars and even elephants, have been found in Europe for the first time, in Marbella. Receiving a bite from the midget, one-millimetre ant has been described as “like receiving a small electric shock”. And experts from the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) have confirmed that the insect is occupying six hectares of an urbanisation in Marbella’s Costa del Sol area. The Centre was contacted, following a call to a pestcontrol company about “very small and stinging” ants in a crack in a wall. CREAF researcher Xavier Espadaler has warned that to eradicate the ant, Marbella may need to “stop watering the urbanisation’s
gardens for two years”. The discovery of the invasive creature, published in the Iberomyrmex journal, is thought to have been partly down to increased temperatures on the Costa del Sol. The fire ant, native to Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific Islands, Australia and South America, is adapted to hot and humid climates. “It is so small that it is practically undetectable,” added Espadaler. “You have to know that it is there and search well! “It is possible that it is already in other places, although nobody has yet seen it.”

Textbooks still have the edge on schools’ modern technology TODAY’S students, the first generation to grow up surrounded by technology, such as smartphones, tablets and e-readers, consider themselves to be “digital natives”. Teachers, parents and policy-makers, who have acknowledged the growing influence of technology, have certainly responded in kind. And that has led to more investment in classroom technologies, with students equipped with schoolissued iPads, along with access to e-textbooks. In 2009, California even passed a law requiring all college textbooks to be made available in electronic form by 2020. Two years later, Florida lawmakers passed legislation to the effect that public schools must convert their textbooks to digital versions. Given this trend, adults involved could reason that students’ familiarity and preference for technology translates into better learning outcomes. But that’s not necessarily true, because a research team, studying learning and text comprehension recently, focused on the differences between reading print and digital media. What emerged was extremely interesting. While new forms of classroom technology, such as digital textbooks, are more accessible and portable, students are not necessarily better served, automatically,
Jailed-for-life student released by the UAE
by digital reading, simply because they prefer it. But the researchers revealed a significant discrepancy. Students said they preferred and performed better when reading on screens, even though their actual performances tended to suffer. For example, the team’s review of research, compiled since 1992, found that students were better able to understand information in print for texts that were more than a page in length. This appears to be related to the disruptive effect that scrolling has on comprehension, and the team were also surprised to learn that few researchers tested different levels of comprehension, or documented reading time, in their studies of printed and digital texts. To explore these patterns further, the research team conducted three studies, exploring college students’ ability to comprehend information on paper and from screens. Students first rated their medium preferences. After reading two passages, one
online and one in print, the students then completed three tasks: describe the main idea of the texts; list key points covered in the readings, and provide any other relevant content they could recall. After finishing, they were asked to evaluate their comprehensive performance. Across the studies, the texts varied in length. But some key findings emerged, shedding new light on the differences between printed reading and digital content: *Students, overwhelmingly, preferred to read digitally *Reading was significantly faster online than in print *Students felt comprehension was better online than in print *Paradoxically, overall comprehension was better in print than in digital reading *The medium didn’t matter for general questions, such as understanding the main idea of the text *But when it came to specific questions, comprehension was significantly better, when the students read printed texts.
BRITSH PhD student Matthew Hedges, 31, from Exeter, has been granted a Presidential pardon in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), having been given a life sentence for being a suspected M16 agent.
The pardon has come into effect immediately, and Mr Hedges’ wife, Daniela Tejada, says she is “elated”, after the news broke on Monday morning. The United Arab Emirates claimed that Mr. Hedges was a member of intelligence agency MI6, and that the PhD student was spying on military systems in the country. Mr Hedges’ current whereabouts remain unknown, but his freedom was assured at a press conference on Monday morning, during which it was announced that the British student had received a Presidential pardon. An alleged video was screened in the news conference, appearing to show Mr Hedges confessing to the charges against him, and admitting that he was, indeed, an MI6 member. This alleged confession furthers the UAE’s claim that Mr Hedges was a “100%, full-time, secret-
service operative”, collecting, covertly, economic and military-based information on the nation. He was arrested at Dubai Airport on 5th May, and his release coincides with the UAE’s 47th National Day, which has seen 784 other prisoners pardoned. British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the release of Mr Hedges was “fantastic news”, but he continued to deny that the student was an MI6 operative. “Although we didn’t agree with charges, we are grateful to the UAE Government for resolving the issue speedily,” said Hunt. Mr. Hedges’ wife released a statement saying: “The Presidential pardon for Matt is the best news we could have received. Our six-plus months of nightmare are finally over, and to say we are elated is an understatement. “That he is returning home to me, and the rest of his family, is much more than I was ever expecting to happen this week. “I thank you all for your support. Without the involvement of the media, the overwhelming support of academics, the public worldwide, the work of the British diplomatic body in the UAE and Secretary Hunt’s intervention, this would have never happened.”

Death-fall tragedy of hard-up woman ALICIA, a 65-yearold woman, committed suicide in Madrid on Monday morning after facing eviction from her home, in the city’s Chamberí district.
The eviction threat was delivered after she had failed to pay the rent on her
house, and Spanish media allege that a judicial officer, accompanied by a member of the Municipal Police force, arrived at Alicia’s home to turf out the poor pensioner. It is believed that the woman, knowing she was about to be locked out, threw herself from her fifth-floor apartment to the streets below. Emergency Services rushed
to the scene in an effort to resuscitate the woman, but medics were unable to revive her, after she had experienced a cardiac arrest. The deceased woman had, reportedly, been living in the apartment for four years, and, said neighbours, she was a “kind” and “honest” person. Diego Sanz, from the Platform of those Affected by Mortgages (PAH) said, when asked about the incident: “The number of evictions has never stopped going down. They are figures comparable to the crisis, and, right now, housing alternatives are not being offered by the administrations.” The PAH says that, at present, 80% of Madrid evictions are down to the non-payment of rent, and the organisation argues that it is because of the “price increase”. It has called for a “complaints medium” for the “invisible” people of Spain, who are finding it hard to pay rent in a steadily-rising rental market.
Jail for pupil who assaulted teacher A MALAGA City court has sentenced a school student to six months in prison, after finding her guilty of assaulting a teacher in Mijas. The court heard that the student had tried to avoid taking an English exam at her Mijas school last February. She had protested to her teacher, before arguing and making inappropriate comments.
She was then said to have assaulted the hapless teacher, causing Emergency Services personnel to be called in to treat the teacher’s injuries. She brought the case to court with the help of her Workers’ Commission (CCOO) union, and Felix Martin, Secretary General of the union’s teaching division, said he was satisfied with the sentence. He also encouraged teachers who had suffered from similar attacks to come forward.

One size does not fit all, when it comes to investments By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
THERE is no single investment solution that suits everyone; what will work for you depends on your own objectives, timeframe and risk appetite. The price you pay for an ill-fitting investment portfolio could be costly. You could find that your money is not working as hard as you would like it to, is difficult to access
when you need it, or, even worse, is eaten away. With professional guidance, you can find the perfect fit for you. Identifying your risk appetite Firstly, you must be clear about how much risk you are willing to take with your money. In the current, lowinterest-rate climate, some risk is necessary, to achieve returns that outpace inflation. But your investment decisions shouldn't keep you awake at night, so it is essential to pinpoint the right risk/reward balance for you. It is extremely difficult to effectively assess your own tolerance for
risk. An experienced financial professional is best placed to ask the right questions, and use the appropriate tools to create a clear and objective risk profile for you. Defining your time horizon Experts say “investing is a marathon, not a sprint” for a good reason. With time, you can ride out market turbulence, and also benefit from compound returns. If you have the means and the patience to invest in the long-term, you are more likely to enjoy better returns. Understanding your time horizon is also the key to future-proofing
your investments, so you can get hold of them when you need to. You never know when your plans may change unexpectedly, so it is important to hold some liquid assets that can be sold, to release capital, if needed. Reducing risk through diversification The higher your concentration in one particular area, the higher the risk. Investments skewed towards UK-based assets, for example, are more vulnerable to downturns in the British market. A good portfolio minimises risk by spreading investments across multiple,
unrelated areas through diversification by asset type - cash, government and corporate bonds, shares, and “real assets” like property - as well as by geographic region and market sector. Be mindful that many private banks and wealth managers often allocate a significant part of their investment portfolios to their own, in-house funds. Also, beware of “cherry-picking” the latest, high-performing fund; history shows plenty of examples where one year's overperforming fund/ sector, significantly underperforms the next. You can achieve greater diversification by choosing an adviser who uses a “multimanager” approach, to spread investments out among several different fund managers, selected for their expertise in specific, market sectors. The impact of taxation Without suitable tax planning, you could find your returns are slashed by taxes that could have been avoided, or, at least, significantly reduced. British expatriates can make the most of tax advantages, in both Spain and the UK, with
personalised advice from a regulated adviser, who specialises in both tax regimes. They can recommend tax-efficient structures that legitimately protect you, and your heirs, from paying more tax than necessary. Remember that your circumstances and objectives change over time, as can tax rules, so what works for you now may not be suitable, in years to come. It is crucial to regularly review how you manage your wealth, to make sure it keeps up with your situation. As the UK prepares to leave the EU, it is sensible to consider a financial “health check” now, to protect your wealth from Brexit uncertainty, and take advantage of today's opportunities, while you can. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Dog defends his owner from violent boyfriend
A DOG defended his owner when she was being beaten up by her boyfriend in Tarragona at around 5.30am last Sunday, and prevented him getting near her again. The dog bit the violent, 25-year-old on the nose and arm when he attacked his partner, then stood guard next to her, growling whenever the assailant tried to approach her. This gave the woman time to call the police without fear of reprisal, or being stopped, since the pet’s menacing attitude kept the boyfriend at bay until he was arrested. The woman, who was taken to hospital to have her injuries treated, then told the Guardia that her boyfriend had been
abusing her physically and psychologically for over a year. She will now get the necessary support, and, if placed in safe housing, she will be able to take her dog with her. Dogs, especially rescue cases, are being used more and more often in domestic-violence cases to help victims, statistically mostly women, to feel safe, and to help them recover from their ordeal. The Tarragona-based Affinity Foundation trains dogs to accompany those women testifying in court against their violent partners or ex-partners. The dogs also help children, who have been victims of crime, to calm down before they enter the dock.

The Little Drummer Girl Sunday 2nd December, BBC1, 21.00
Khalil (Charif Ghattas) takes Charlie (Florence Pugh) to an isolated house where he builds a bomb for the planned attack on Professor Minkel, an outspoken academic. Meanwhile, Kurtz (Michael Shannon) and Becker (Alexander Skarsgard) are concerned about Charlie’s state of mind and where her allegiances lie. In her greatest test so far in the theatre of the real, Charlie delivers the bomb to the university moments before Professor Minkel is due to speak. Kurtz (Michael Shannon) and Becker work with British Intelligence Officer Picton (Charles Dance) to try to avert bloodshed and turn the situation to their advantage. When Kurtz discovers that Charlie is working with Khalil, he sees the opportunity to have Charlie rise to the top of Khalil’s network alongside the great man himself. Finally, an agent on the inside. But having grown so close to those she is tasked with betraying, will Charlie bend to the will of Kurtz and Becker at the last? And can Kurtz and his team outsmart Khalil, the genius that he has been chasing for so many years? Torn between love of Becker, respect and sympathy for Khalil, and a wavering belief in the righteousness of her quest, Charlie’s identity is tested to its very limit in a nail-biting season finale.
Escape From Dubai: The Mystery Of The Missing Princess Thursday 6th December, BBC2, 21.00
In February this year, the 32 year-old daughter of the ruler of Dubai boarded a boat and set sail for India with a plan to start a new life in America. But within days her boat was stormed by Indian commandos - she was captured and presumably returned to Dubai. No one has heard from her since. But Princess Latifa had made a video in case she was caught, and entrusted it to a lawyer in America. Days later it was released on You Tube. Escape From Dubai: The Mystery Of The Missing Princess pieces together Princess Latifa’s life and reveals how she had been planning the escape for more than seven years. Far from living a charmed life, she was watched and restricted by her father, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The princess claims she had been imprisoned and tortured for a previous attempt to leave. The programme investigates the mystery of her older sister, Shamsa, who disappeared from the streets of Cambridge in 2000 after fleeing the family’s British mansion in Surrey. And it asks if the image of Dubai we are sold - of winter sunshine and luxury hotels - is actually hiding a brutal dictatorship of human rights abuses, where surveillance, imprisonment and torture are systematic and where tourists can easily be imprisoned for the slightest infringements of the state’s ultra conservative laws.

In this episode we explore the lives of painted wolves, of which there are only 6,600 left in the world. Tait is a matriarch. For years she has used her power to keep the peace within her sprawling family - a peace that has allowed her dynasty to rule the floodplains of the great Zambezi river. But now she is old and her influence is waning. A new force is emerging from within her own family that threatens to shatter that peace. Her daughter, Blacktip has been growing in strength. Now she leads her pack into her mother’s heartlands - the richest and safest territory in the whole region. In a surprise attack she drives her mother out and takes over. In the chaos that follows, Blacktip and her mother are forced to confront the mortal dangers of hyenas and crocodiles. Their puppies are threatened. And as Blacktip pursues her mother ever further into dangerous lands, both must face the might of a Painted Wolf’s greatest enemy - the lions.

Alison (Ruth Wilson) is on the tail of the elusive Dorothy (Keeley Hawes) - finding photographs of her from Alec’s stint in India. After speaking to Alec’s handler Coleman (Fiona Shaw) and hearing that their ‘relationship’ was likely a cover story, Alison traces Dorothy to Yorkshire and demands to hear the truth. Back in the 1940s Alison struggles with the aftermath of Alec’s decisions, forced to raise her poverty-stricken young family in wartime London.

Brit drug-trafficker is jailed for 15 years
A COURT in Alicante has sentenced British drug-trafficker Brian Charrington to 15 years in prison, for smuggling 192kg of cocaine from South America into Spain, from 2012 to 2013.
Charrington, from Teesside, appeared on Europe’s most-wanted list of criminals, prior to his 2013 arrest. The smuggler ran his global operation from the Costa Blanca, and police raided one of his homes, in which, allegedly, he harboured other fugitives. Charrington gained notoriety in Spain, and he became known as the “Wikipedia Narco”, because he was said to have updated his own Wikipedia page, to boast about the volume of drugs he had smuggled into Spain, successfully.
The court found him guilty of crimes against public health, and moneylaundering. He was ordered to pay around 31.2m euros in fines, and his son, Ray, has also been convicted for money-laundering crimes.
And the top award is around 600 cars!
NARENDRA Modi, India’s Prime Minister, has helped a diamond merchant hand over no fewer than 600 cars to his employees, as a thank-you for their efforts. The employees, of Hari Krishna Exporters, a diamond trading company run by Savji Dholakia, received the Suzuki cars, made in India, with a total showroom value of more than £1.5m. And a further 1,000 staff were offered gifts of cash deposits and apartments, in a huge outdoor ceremony in Surat, Gujarat. Indians often give each other gifts in the run-up to Diwali, a major Hindu annual festival, celebrating
the triumph of good over evil. Modi addressed the prize-giving in his home state of Gujarat, via video link, as well as presenting some of the employees with car keys, in the India capital of New Delhi. Dholakia is famous across India for giving lavish gifts to his employees at Diwali, including hundreds of apartments in the 2016 ceremony. Gift-giving in the latter part of the year, during which several Hindu festivals are celebrated, provides a major boost to India’s economy. The gifts were part of a programme, targeting staff who have given loyal service to the diamond trader. “The aim of this programme was to reward employees’ loyalty and dedication towards the company,” said Dholakia in a Facebook post.

Thank you, Julia and Laura
LAST week, two lovely girls, Julia and Laura, made a couple of dogs at the refuge very happy, by taking them out for a walk, and giving them lots of love and affection.
Apart from their obvious needs, such as food, water and veterinary care, this is all the dogs want. They love going out for a stroll, so please do come and walk
some of the lovely dogs in our care. We have, once again, a large number of puppies at the refuge, and we urge you all to please adopt a dog or puppy, and don't buy. Also, please do castrate or sterilise your dog, to help reduce the ever-growing number of abandoned dogs on the island. Shoebox treats! With Christmas just around the corner, we have started a campaign to ask our friends and supporters
to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs, such as dog treats, tinned dog food for our older dogs, puppy milk, dog toys and chews. Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge, so it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to our 230 dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge on 20th December between 2-5pm, or call 687 905 511, to arrange for your donation to be collected.

A unique take on shopping THE new shopping centre, The Duke Shops, spread out over an area of 9000 sq/m, opens its doors to Tenerife South today (30th November). The Duke is a new concept of open commercial space, which offers all visitors a different and unique “shopping” experience, in the Canary Islands. With around 60 different retail outlets, spread over three floors, The Duke also offers garden areas and large terrace spaces, with views of the surroundings. The Duke will captivate all who visit, thanks to a careful selection of well-known brands and selective retailers. A collection of brands has been selected with care and demand, all chosen with a clear and defined objective, making this commercial space unique, compared with other commercial centres in Tenerife. More than half our selection of retailers consists of exclusive mono-brand spaces. We offer the latest trends in fashion, footwear
and accessories, including labels such as Armani, Exchange, Ted Baker and Poden & Cool. The Duke also offers many first and only stores in the Canary Islands, including Vans, Hurley, Levis and Guess; these exclusive stores will be accompanying a select collection of boutiques, along with several other unique shops. The Duke's aim is to make the shopping
experience stress free, and we want our customers to forget the problems of day-to-day life. The Duke have dedicated two floors to top fashion, with the aim of completely satisfying our customers. We want our clients to get carried away with the shopping experience, and with our staff, who are trained, exclusively, to advise and guide, as well as fulfill our customers' wishes.
Food court Our roof-top terrace has been reserved for gastronomy, offering a wide selection of food, created with elegance, all under one splendid, wooden, pergola roof. We offer our customers a perfect combination of trying our high-quality cuisine, and tasting an array of beers and wines from all over the word. The Duke wants customers to enjoy the experience, and create special, memorable moments. Location The Duke shopping centre is located in one of the most privileged and attractive areas in Tenerife. The area of El Duque boasts the best
beaches on the island, as well as several, exclusive 5-star hotels. Also emerging in the vicinity is a residential area, which makes the commercial space perfect for this location, in the South of the island. Connectivity The Duke shopping centre offers all visitors a comfortable underground parking space, complementing a large outdoor parking area, just a few metres from the stores. For those who don't want to visit us by car, The Duke shopping centre is easily accessed by public transport, with a Titsa bus stop at the shopping centre's front door, as well as a taxi rank.
Warning signs of diabetes By Val Sainsbury MORE than 100 million American adults are living with Type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes. But the number of people who know they have the diseases, which can lead to life-threatening complications, like blindness and heart disease, is far lower. Of the estimated 30.3 million Americans with Type 2 diabetes, 7.2
million, or 1 in 4 adults living with the disease, are not aware of it. And, among those people living with prediabetes, only 11.6% are aware that they have the disease. Prediabetes is marked by higher-than-normal blood-sugar levels, but not high enough to qualify as diabetes. This condition often leads to full-blown Type 2 within five years, if it's left untreated, by implementing diet and lifestyle modifications. Type 2 diabetes can lead to potentiallyserious issues, like neuropathy, or nerve damage, vision prob-
lems, an increased risk of heart disease, and other diabetes complications, such as amputations. People with full-blown Type 2 are not able to use the hormone insulin properly, and are insulin resistant. Insulin is necessary for glucose, or sugar, to be transported from your blood into your cells, to be used for energy. When not enough insulin is produced, or when the hormone doesn’t function as it should, glucose accumulates in the blood, instead of being used by the cells. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include obesity, inactivity, old age, race, and a personal history of gestational diabetes. Nevertheless, you can help to prevent prediabetes and Type 2 by maintaining a healthy weight, following a healthy diet that's rich in vegetables, lean protein and healthy fats, as well as getting sufficient sleep, and exercising regularly. But preventing the disease from progressing, if you already, unknowingly, have it, requires first
being able to spot the signs and symptoms when they appear. While some Type 2 symptoms may not ever show up, you can watch out for the following common signs of the disease. Frequent urination When there is excess glucose present in the blood, the kidneys react by flushing it out and into the urine. This results in more urine production, and the need to urinate more frequently. Increased thirst or a dry mouth Frequent urination causes you to lose a lot of fluid and become dehydrated. Consequently, you develop a dry mouth and feel thirsty more often. Unexpected weight loss When you have Type 2 diabetes, your cells don't get enough glucose, which may cause you to lose weight. Also, if you are urinating more frequently because of uncontrolled diabetes, you may lose more calories and water, resulting in weight loss, People with Type 2 may have insulin resistance, which means the body
cannot use insulin properly to help glucose get into the cells. So insulin doesn't work well in muscle, fat and other tissues, so your pancreas (the organ that produces insulin) starts to put out a lot more of it, to try and compensate. This insulin level sends signals to the brain that your body is hungry. Foot pain and numbness Over time, prolonged exposure to high blood sugar can damage the nerves throughout the body, a condition called diabetic neuropathy. Some people may not have any symptoms of the damage, while others may notice numbness, tingling, or pain in the extremities. Although most common in people who have had Type 2 for 25 years or more, it can occur in people who have prediabetes as well. Frequent infections Because both yeast and bacteria multiply more quickly when blood-sugar levels are elevated, women with diabetes are, overall, at a higher risk of feminine health issues, such as bacterial and yeast
infections, especially when blood sugar isn't well controlled. And a lack of awareness about having prediabetes or diabetes can make managing blood sugar impossible. In men and women, foot infections are also a common symptom, because the disease can damage the architecture of the foot, including the skin, blood vessels and nerves. Blurred vision The lens of the eye is a flexible membrane, suspended by muscles that change the shape of the lens to focus the eye. In a high-sugar environment, such as with uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes, the lens’ ability to bend is altered. Although the lens is not damaged, the muscles of the eye have to work harder to focus. Blurred vision occurs when there are rapid changes in blood sugar, and the eye muscles have not yet adapted to it. Blurred vision is one of the early warning signs of Type 2 diabetes. The body later adapts to the sugar levels, and your vision will go back to normal.

CD Tenerife
No black Sunday for CD Tenerife! SUDDENLY, the home side remembered how to win, with this emphatic victory against Rayo Majadahonda. It started with an early goal from Naranjo, and should have been put to bed after Suso converted a penalty. But it wasn’t as simple as that. Toni Martínez narrowed the gap for the Madridbased team to silence the Heliodoro faithful, who had seen continued signs of improvement from a team maintaining their progression. Yet they provided doubts in the goal areas, both in attack and defence. Coach Oltra’s team scored with their first attack as Naranjo ended a threegame goal drought. Malbasic was instrumental, with a penetrating run deep in to the visitors’ half. And, unlike previous games, he had support as he pulled the ball back past defender Rafa to Naranjo, who slotted it past the Rayo goalkeeper easily, after two minutes. Malbasic himself had a good chance a few minutes later when beating Óscar Valentín, but he could only find the side-netting. But the home fans enjoyed a placid first half with their lead, with only one chance for Rayo Majadahonda in the final minute, when Dani tipped a shot from Benito on to the crossbar and to safety, and halftime. Rayo began to find joy in midfield, especially with the pace of forwards Aitor García and Aitor Rubial. But Oltra quickly combated this by moving up his front line to pressure and isolate them, reducing their options when they did have the ball. What was a good afternoon for CD Tenerife turned into a great afternoon, when they were awarded a penalty on the hour mark, although Rayo may have felt hard done by. As Naranjo attacked a long ball, Morillas put his arm up to protect himself and
CD Tenerife 2 Rayo Majadahonda 1
the ball hit his hand, innocently. Yet the referee wasted no time in awarding the spot-kick. Suso stepped up with confidence and wrong-footed the keeper, to make it 2-0 to Tenerife with 61 minutes on the clock, which put them firmly in control. The final half-hour saw Tenerife pressing, and Rayo trying to exploit them with a counter-attack. In fact, they came close in the 69th minute when Fede
Varela had a one-on-one with Dani, but he missed by inches. In the 73rd minute, however, Rayo’s persistence was rewarded when they caught Tenerife napping, as they pressed in their opponents’ half. A long ball was taken by Toni Martinez, who outran Alberto and shot past Dani to make it 2-1, with a little over 15 minutes to go. Oltra, who wanted to close the match, brought on Carlos Ruiz in a defence with
three central players. From then on, home fans had just one scare, in the 85th minute from Aitor Garcia, but he shot too high. This was followed by a Tenerife attack, with Milla in the visitors’ area, but it led to nothing. As the final whistle went, the fans celebrated and Oltra let out a huge sigh of relief, having gained some breathing space with three valuable points. There are still problems, obviously, but this win lifts
morale in a squad who are starting to gel and are seeing improvements. They now find themselves in 16th place, ironically, three points from midtable, and three points above the relegation zone. That’s how tight the table is. The match tomorrow (Saturday) could see Tenerife move further up the table, if they take this form with them to Sporting Gijon, who are just a couple of points and places above them.

Legends take a battering TEAMS in the top half of Division 1 brought their “A” games to the oche, as The Pub demonstrated, with an 8-0 whitewash against Legends. With Malc having two 180s, along with Mitch’s maximum, they put Legends to the sword, even though John did his utmost to secure a point for his battered team. Gaffers delivered the same scoreline against Scooters ‘A’, with topform Dennis throwing a 180, to keep the pressure on the other top teams. Palms Pool Bar welcomed Pas O Nadas ‘A’, but, as demonstrated previously, they were no match for their visi-
tors, who also enjoyed a whitewash. Picasso’s hosted The Loch- In ‘A’, and, among the highlights, were a maximum by James and an 85 finish, on the bull. Wayne followed in the same vein with a 140 finish and a 16-dart leg, and his 84, completed with a bull, helped the visitors to a 6-2 triumph. Mad Hatters, who played a four-man Sandys’ team, made the advantage count with a 7-1 victory. And Ourplace Breakaways, hosting Nauta Nomads, secured a well-deserved 4-4 draw on an entertaining evening. Meanwhile, Waterfall shot to the top of Division 2 by demolishing Scooters ‘B’ 8-0, while

Argentine Cup Final is called off, indefinitely!
NOBODY really knows when the Copa Libertadores, which is South America’s premier club competition, will stage its final this year. It was scheduled to take place last Saturday, but, after an initial two-hour delay for the kick-off, the match between Boco Juniors and River Plate was postponed for 24 hours. Now it’s been called off indefinitely. The decision was sparked
off by an attack from some River Plate fans on Boca Juniors’ team bus on its way to the stadium for the second leg of the final. The incident left several Boca players injured, including one person who caught glass splinters in his eye. Football in South America is known to be a violent affair, at times, and in Argentina, fans have not been allowed to attend away matches since 2013, after violence claimed the life of a fan. But Boca and River Plate are fierce Argentine rivals, and peace between the fans is usually a no-no.
‘Cleared’ fast-bowler is still banned for life! INDIAN pacebowler Sreesanth Bhuvaneshwari, despite being cleared by a Delhi court of match-fixing allegations against him, is still under a life ban. It was imposed on him by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), but his wife has written an open letter on her Twitter account saying: “Cricket is a game where you have an
age limit, so why is he being punished for something he never did, and has been proven innocent? “And why are they not taking the names of those 13 players whose names are sealed in an envelope, after the findings of the Mudgal committee, which was appointed by a court?” Mrs Bhuvaneshwari adds: “Why is there a double standard? Why is it only Sree, who is still fighting the matter, in spite of being proven innocent? I really hope you all will stand and
support him in his fight for justice.” In a match-fixing case, Sreesanth had to cool his heels in Delhi’s Tihar jail in 2013. But, in 2015, the now 34-year-old pacer, along with two other players, was exonerated by the Delhi court. But his life ban persists, and he cannot play league cricket, or even get access to practise at any cricket grounds where the BCCI, or the state cricket associations, have a stake.
