Heart-breaking end for German couple
Tax rebates for parents
THE bodies of a German couple were discovered last Sunday inside a Gran Canaria house at Vecindario, in Santa Lucia de Tirajana. Neighbours informed the Local Police last week about a strange smell, emanating from the home in which they lived. Officers went to investigate
on the Wednesday, but failed to get any response from the house. They tried again on the Saturday because the neighbours again complained about the bad smell. But the police were unable to speak to anyone. Finally, last Sunday, the Guardia Civil along with the fire services, entered the house and came across both bodies; the man was on the stairs, while the woman was found in her bed. The locals
hadn’t seen the couple since the previous Saturday, but, after questioning the locals, it was revealed that the man had been taking care of his partner, who was ill and believed to be bed-bound. Unfortunately, the man had died through natural causes, and, because he was unable to look after his partner, the woman died soon afterwards. Officials have ruled out their deaths as being suspicious.
SPAIN’S Finance Minister, María Jesús Montero, has announced that parents, who received paternity or maternity payments in the last four years from the Spanish Social Security system, can now reclaim the income tax (IRPF) they paid on those benefits. On 5th October, a Supreme Court ruling ended a legal debate, which had been on the table for years: whether or not maternity and paternity benefits should be subject to IRPF. While the Tax Agency argued that they should, some courts ruled the other way. But the Supreme Court eventually found in favour of the taxpayer, but only to maternity benefits. This raised doubts about whether fathers could claim. But last week, the Finance Minister confirmed that they would also be eligible
for a rebate. However, taxpayers are restricted to claims for the years back to 2014, given that the Tax Agency allows for revisions to returns filed in the last four years. Applicants must fill out a claim form, stating the years they received payments, and will also have to supply their bank-account details. The process can be done online, or in person at one of Spain’s tax offices. The rebates can be applied for in two phases, with parents of children born in 2014 and 2015 able to reclaim their taxes immediately, and those who had children in 2016 and 2017, from January onwards. The total cost to the public coffers will be around 1.2bn euros, with the average rebate for mothers around 1,600 euros, and, for fathers, some 25% of that total.
Things are swinging for the special-needs people
A MUSIC therapy project called “Timba”, set up for special-needs individuals, has been launched by Adeje Council, with the municipal School of Music and the Los Olivos centre for functional diversity. The programme, under Councillors Carmen Rosa González Cabrera and Carmen Lucía Rodríguez, will be open to any specialneeds people in the borough, the main aim being to bring music to the whole population. “This is a programme to use music as a physical, psychological and social tool, to improve the lives of individuals,” said Carmen Rosa González. And Carmen Lucia Rodríguez added: “Music as therapy is not just an idealistic notion in the search for ‘curative power’.
“The therapeutic effects of music are the results of professional methods, which are applied properly.” Those interested in signing up can do so through the Adeje School of Music, with classes in the mornings and afternoons on offer. It is thought that the morning hours would
suit adults with some form of special needs, while the afternoon sessions might be better suited to people with functional diversity, who are attending regular educational centres in the mornings. “Among the aims will be the improvement of communication through music, listening, dancing
or playing, transmitting feelings and ideas, improving interpersonal relationships and selfawareness,” said Carmen Lucia Rodríguez. The teachers will focus on multi-sensory stimulation, self-expression, helping to develop intellectual capacity, improving cognitive abilities and
psychomotor functions, such as spatial perception, motor skills and coordination. The project has already completed a pilot phase in Los Olivos centre, with a high level of satisfaction reported from students and teachers. “Now, we want to take it a step further and open the programme to everyone, so we need the School of Music to come on board, as here we have the installation and the teaching staff who are able to become involved in the project,” said Cllr Rodríguez. Cllr Carmen Rosa González added: “Attention to those with special needs is part of the School of Music’s protocol. Currently, we have a dozen students with some form of disability, and we are interested in opening the school’s doors to many more people, in particular, to what is, in some ways, a ‘vulnerable’ section of our society. And the school is 100% behind the project.”

Killer-whale trainer dies after a ‘tragic accident’ Cont. from Front Officers in a Guardia Civil helicopter police spotted a body floating in the sea around 11am, close to the lighthouse, which stands in the harbour car park. A few minutes later, a Red Cross lifeboat raced to the scene, and the bruised body was pulled onboard. A source close to the investigation said on Wednesday: “The body was in a very bad state. A postmortem is taking place, but it has not yet been determined how the death occurred, and whether it was accidental or not.” There was still no decision yesterday (Thursday), yet National Police were convinced, immediately, that it was Amy, and that she had been the victim of a “tragic accident”. The 28-year-old, from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, was living it up with her workmates, including German boyfriend Dennis
Kissling, last Thursday night. The couple, who got together earlier this year, were celebrating a friend’s birthday at the Irish bar, Molly Malone, near the harbour, and about half-amile from where she lived. Amy graduated from Lincoln University, where
she studied animal behaviour, and was working at Tenerife’s world-famous Loro Parque zoo, where German-born Dennis is also employed. She had worked, previously, as a marine-mammal trainer in France and Mexico. Witnesses recalled that she and Dennis left the bar
at 12.20am. Amy, wearing skinny black jeans and a green jumper, was easily recognisable in a video, shot inside the bar, with her mass of curly hair, dancing along with her friends. She was also seen smiling and holding hands with Dennis. Brendan Reid Spencer, who owns the Molly Malone bar, told The Sun newspaper: “She came in with six work colleagues around 11pm, and they were all having a good time, singing and dancing. But I wouldn’t
say they were drunk. “She was with her fellow, a German lad called Dennis. The group all left in twos and they were the last couple to leave. She turned off to the right and Dennis went to the left.” Spanish newspapers reported that they had been having an argument before they left the bar, which may have accounted for their parting of the ways. Amy’s mother, Julie, and her sister, Chloe, also from Cleethorpes, had flown to the island, along with her sister’s 35-year-old fiancé, Mike Dolan, to help with the search. But to no avail. In recent months, Amy had used her maiden name, Gerard, which was the one featured on missing posters in English and Spanish, rather than her married name. Ryan Docherty, to whom she was still said to be married, was thought to be back in the UK. He had shared online appeals for information on Amy.
Women’s home chance to be virtual assistants THE Economic Development and Job Creation Department, led by Adeje Council’s Manuel Luis Méndez Martin, is offering a work-based, virtualtraining programme for 15 women in the borough, in conjunction with the Cruz Roja. The course is for women on the Adeje padron, and it offers a new kind of job opportunity for those
with young children or dependants, under their care. “It also applies to those aged over 45, who need to balance their work with their family commitments, so the training will allow them to work from home as virtual assistants,” said Cllr Méndez Martin. The programme will offer various areas of learning, required today by businesses in the digital sector. This includes training in digital channels, financial managements and administration, and classes in social networks, as well
as reporting, design and management. They will also receive training in the web, email marketing, basic videoediting, and, in addition, orientation in the digital labour market. On offer is 220 hours of training, divided into 100 hours of actual training, and 120 hours of practical training with businesses in the digital sector, which can be fulfilled at home. When the women have completed the course, they will be placed on the AITED listing, from which they could receive job offers.

Carnival Corporation takes control of Santa Cruz Port THE Carnival Corporation company will be the first concession-holder to operate Tenerife’s Santa Cruz Port, the Canary Islands’ and Mid Atlantic’s newest cruise terminal.
An agreement with Santa Cruz Port Authority was made on Tuesday, and the terminal, which can accommodate “green” ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), will welcome AIDAnova, from the corporation’s Germanybased AIDA Cruises brand, on its maiden voyage in December. Santa Cruz Port, which received 617,987 cruise passengers last year, is one of the busiest cruise ports in the Canaries. Carnival Corporation also manages two other Spanish cruise terminals, Barcelona’s Helix and Palacruceros facilities. No fewer than seven Carnival Corporation brands make port calls to Tenerife during the year: AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Cunard, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Seabourn and P&O Cruises UK. And the company expects to bring more than 300,000 passengers to the island’s main port in 2019. That amounts to half of all cruisepassenger visits, with 130 calls by 31 different ships
from the company’s cruiseline brands. “Carnival Corporation has long been a valued partner with the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Canary Islands, and we are confident they will be a wonderful steward of our recently-built cruise port,” said Pedro Suárez López de Vergara, President of the Santa Cruz Port Authority. “Thanks, largely, to Carnival Corporationships, the cruise market generated 24
million euros through the Port, and Santa Cruz City itself, in the 2018 cruise season. “That was a six-millioneuro increase on last season, and we look forward to continuing sharing our beautiful island with visiting cruise passengers.” He added: “The Santa Cruz Port Authority celebrates this long-term agreement, with the aim of extending the benefits to its other ports: Santa Cruz de La
Palma, San Sebastián de La Gomera, La Estaca in El Hierro and Tenerife’s Los Cristianos.” Giora Israel, Senior VicePresident of global port and destination development for Carnival Corporation, said: “This concession, and our ongoing investment, is part of our long-term strategy to continue to develop the cruise industry in the Canary Islands. “Our passion is to always provide the best possible
experiences for our guests, and Tenerife is an extremely popular destination, offering something for everyone, including a storied history, beautiful beaches, exotic gardens, unique crafts and memorable cuisine.” He added: “We look forward to ensuring that our cruise guests coming through the Santa Cruz Port have a great experience, and we also look forward to expanding relationships with our friends in Tenerife.”
Mysterious ‘earthquake’ baffles Canarian experts SEISMIC stations across the planet recorded a mysterious reading on 11th November, with characteristics that had “never been observed before”, according to American seismologist Göran Ekström. The Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan) has echoed his view, reporting through its social networks: “This signal is very different from the seismograms normally associated with earthquakes, having an oscillatory character that can be explained only by invoking a phenomenon of volcanic type.” The epicentre of this unusual earthquake was located about 24 kilometres east of
the Mayotte volcanic island, in the Indian Ocean, and the quake lasted 22 minutes. In the same area, since last May, a series of earthquakes, with magnitudes of up to 5.8, have been recorded. And, at the same time, the GPS stations deployed on Mayotte recorded a deformation of the terrain, which seems to indicate the emptying of a giant magmatic chamber (a large pool of liquid rock beneath the Earth’s surface) in the same area as the earthquakes, said an Involcan spokesperson The waves, which vibrated through Africa, also crossed oceans, leaving signals throughout Chile, New Zealand, Canada and even Hawaii, which is almost 18,000km away from Mayotte, said National Geographic. But, for now, scientists have not been able to decipher what caused the tremor.

THIS year’s annual Walk for Life takes place on Sunday, 16th December, and an anticipated record of 5,000 people are expected to tread the wellworn path between Arona and Adeje. That’s the belief of the organisers, as well the Mayors of those boroughs, José Julian Mena and José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, respectively, who held a joint press conference on Monday to publicise the event. Foundation President Brigitte Gypen, who launched the Walk in the first place, was at the top table, alongside Grand Marshall Agoney, a popular Spanish singer and this year’s honorary walker, who said: “This is very important for me, but it’s not the first time I have taken part. And in previous years, I sang, too.” The 2017 event attracted 4,500 walkers, raising over 20,000 euros for cancer charities. This year’s entrants will gather at Arona’s “Golden Mile”, and walk the four kilometres to Plaza Salytien, in Costa Adeje. There will be a lot of

During the press conference, Arona Mayor Mena stressed the urgency for “an oncology unit in South Tenerife, which needs to be based in the public hospital”. The demand was seconded by Adeje Mayor Fraga, who also addressed the issue of mobility, saying: “Under the current system, cancer patients have to be taken to the North for their treatments. So, adding to their treatments and illnesses, they have to face long journeys, often prolonged by traffic jams.” Mena added: “The Walk for Life is a day full of hope, but awareness has to be something permanent. It’s not just about one day, but about 365 days.” Fraga renewed the
borough’s commitment to the Walk for Life, “which reflects the solidarity of the South with those, mostly women, who are suffering from this illness”. Brigitte Gypen thanked all those who participate, along with the businesses and sponsors, those helping with printing,
Baby Guanche remains found in Tenerife cave
A HUNTER and his cameraman pal were exploring caves last February, looking for an Albino spider to photograph, when they stumbled across the skulls of two new-born Guanche babies, hidden in a large crack in the wall. Domingo the hunter, and his friend, Sergio, told the press about their discovery on Tuesday, and, in great detail, of their feelings, the moment they came across the tiny skulls,
hidden in a crevice behind some carefully-placed rocks in a Guia de Isora cave, on Tenerife’s west coast. Initially, they thought they were dolls’ heads, until they inspected further and discovered human remains, wrapped in some type of animal skin. They then realised what they had come across, because they were typical of an aboriginal funeral ritual. Domingo and Sergio hope that their discovery can help to understand the burial ritual performed by the Guanches, when their young died.

instead. There will also be a “flash mob”, and people are already practising, using the videos online on the Walk for Life and social networks. Brigitte, detailing the use of funds raised last year, said that money was spent on the BRA project, ensuring that every woman on the island, who has undergone a mastectomy, has access to a special bra, designed for her needs, which is an essential tool in aiding recovery. Another project to benefit from funding is the development of liquid biopsies, as well as the oncological physiotherapy service. In addition, there are the on-going activities in the Pink Room, and donations to cancer associations such as the AECC and AMATE. Funding is also used to assist in the Kilómetro Solidario Project, which provides transport for oncology patients in South Tenerife. A surprise visitor to the press conference was the new Walk for Life mascot, a butterfly! It is, so far, unnamed, but the public will be asked to help come up with a name through social media. Another paraglider tumbles
Adeje warming up for Christmas now YET another paraglider has troubled emergency medics, after falling into trouble in Playa de la Caleta, in the Garachico municipality, which led to him being treated in hospital. The incident was reported last Sunday, at around 11.40am, by an emergency caller, who requested an ambulance because the 41-year-old man had suffered severe body injuries through falling, rapidly. When the ambulance arrived, medics assessed the man’s injuries and soon stabilised him, before transferring him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Man jailed for illegal building
A MAN in Gran Canaria was this week sent to prison for two years, for refusing to demolish part of his home, which did not comply with building regulations. The family and friends of the man, who was living in El Salobre, San Bartolome de Tirajana, said he had expanded his home, illegally, by 40sq/m, according to a ruling that the land was classified as rural. He then claimed that he could not afford the cost of the demolition, which added up to around 24,000 euros. His family also said that the General Plan for San Bartolome de Tirajana provided the classification of the home as urban, and not rural.
Guardia agents fined millions
LAS Palmas Provincial Court has pronounced judgement on 10 people for drug-trafficking in Fuerteventura. They included four Guardia Civil officers, and two other accomplices, in the case known as Botavara. The trial, held last June, heard that the drug-trafficking gang had been led by five Guardia Civil officers. One defendant, the fifth Guardia Civil officer, was acquitted of drug-trafficking, but convicted of violent behaviour. Six of the accused were jailed for between four and nine years, while the four Guardia agents were banned from the force for 11 years, with fines totalling 3.4 million euros, for drug-trafficking, as well as violent aggression and obstruction of justice.

Baby lambs survive a rooftop barbecue LOCAL Police were startled to discover five baby lambs on an El Fraile rooftop on Monday afternoon, but only two were alive. The three dead animals had been skinned and were without their organs, while the other two were found, distressed, inside a washing room on the roof. In the other washing room, there was offal spread out in pieces. The police were informed by a neighbour after she came across the animals while investigating why water was tumbling from the roof of the apartment block, in El Fraile’s Lanzarote Street. Police climbed up on the roof and found not only the carcasses but a lot of water, as well as barbecue facilities.
After searching around, they came across the washing rooms, where they found pieces of meat in one, and the two baby lambs in the another. Neighbours told the police there had been a party the previous night on the roof. And sources said the animals might belong to two families living there. The cops went to question them, but received no response after knocking several times. Given the situation, they decided to contact Arona Council’s Department of Health to remove the lambs from the roof, because they were a case for public health and hygiene. The two live lambs were handed over to the police animal protection unit, and Arona Council cleaners tidied up the roof and removed the smelly meat pieces.
Monitor believed to have mistreated nursery kids
AN investigation has been opened into a female monitor, who has been reported for alleged mistreatment of young children, at a nursery in Telde, Gran Canaria. Several reports have been made by families, who have enrolled their children at the centre recently. And video footage, which has been submitted, could
determine whether the alleged mistreatment of the minors is true, and that it happens frequently. As a precautionary measure, the woman being investigated has been suspended, temporarily, from working at the nursery. And she cannot work alongside any minors while the probe is taking place. The children’s nursery owner is also being investigated for liability of the alleged crimes.

The Duke Shops LAST Friday evening saw the long-awaited opening of the newest commercial centre, The Duke Shops, El Duque, and what an opening it was!
The attention to detail, and the research involved in hosting a Duke and Duchess event, was second to none, from start to finish. As people walked the red carpet, flames ignited above their heads. On entering, they were greeted by two ladies, dressed in full costume, who took their name, and their attendance was announced, further on in the proceedings. Walking further into the shopping centre, one of the many Dukes showed people to the photo booth, where they could have their photographs taken. There was a stage at either end of the centre, each with LED screens, full lighting etc. There was entertainment throughout the evening, from classical music to a band, and

There was plenty to eat and drink, with a wide selection of food available, either at one of the many food tables, or on the trays that were brought round by the waiting staff. The catering was provided by Gourmetland Catering and Events. Just before the centre was officially opened, and the general public allowed in, there was a

SPAIN and the UK have signed the most important bilateral agreement, concerning the future of Gibraltar, in more than a decade.
Last Thursday, the governments of both countries officially signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), aimed at reducing inequality, during the Brexit transition period, between the Rock and Campo de Gibraltar, the neighbouring Spanish region in Andalusia, where high unemployment and drug-trafficking are major problems. The MoUs address the four most sensitive areas for relations between Spain and Gibraltar: tobacco, the environment, customs and policing co-operation, along with the rights of crossborder workers. It represents the first understanding Madrid and London have reached over issues which have created friction, ever since Gibraltar was ceded to Great Britain in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht. An attempt was made in 2006 with the socalled Córdoba agreements, but this was never applied because both parties would not trust each other! While the MoUs are a huge step forward, they apply only to the Brexit transition period, which is less than two years long. The agreements also state, explicitly, that they do not “change the respective legal positions of the Spanish Kingdom and the United Kingdom, regarding the sovereignty and jurisdiction of Gibraltar”. In other words, the Spanish Government cannot use the bilateral framework to push for co-sovereignty of the British Overseas Territory, at least until it expires at the end of the transition period, earmarked for January 2021.

Spain-UK sign up for landmark agreement over Rocky problem
Importantly, the agreement sets a limit on the price differences between tobacco products sold in Spain and those sold in Gibraltar, where they are much cheaper. Gibraltar is the biggest entry point for illegal tobacco products into Spain. Last year, Spanish authorities seized more than 600,000 cartons of cigarettes, which was a 158% rise from 2016, according to official data. The text outlines that all parties agree “on the need to reduce the price difference of tobacco products”. To achieve this, the Gibraltar Government has agreed to ensure that “the average
retail price differential of tobacco products will be no more than 32% greater than the most recentlypublished Spanish prices for the equivalent tobacco products”, by the end of June 2020. Currently, the minimum gap is 48%, according to the Foreign Ministry data. After years without any agreement on this issue, the Gibraltar Government declares in the MoU that it is “concerned about the health consequences of smoking, and the existence of an illicit trade in tobacco”. The rest of the documents cover the exchange of information, and the
creation of joint committees to oversee the complex relationship between Spain and Gibraltar. Under the new bilateral framework, a Technical and Co-ordination Committee (TCC) will be created to improve co-operation on air quality, water quality and the protection of marine habitats. The TCC also includes the possibility of discussing “land reclamation”, which is a reference to a practice in Gibraltar, in which cement and other materials are placed in waters disputed by Madrid and London. On the issue of citizen rights, the agreement
is definitely vague. The text simply reaffirms that Spanish people living on, or with interests in, the Rock, and Gibraltarians in Spain, will not be discriminated against. A tax treaty will be added to the MoUs, once it receives parliamentary approval. It plans to reduce what Spain views as unfair competition from Gibraltar, where many businesses choose to be registered because of the lower taxes, even though their activities take place in Spain. There are 55,000 registered businesses in Gibraltar… even though it registers just over 30,000 residents!
The gym that offers everlasting power! A GYMNASIUM, able to convert human movement into energy to power machines, has opened in Greater Madrid.
Mónica and Juan Ignacio, the brains behind the project, who opened the Movewatts gym in Alcobendas, along with an 11-strong team, say the treadmills, exercise bikes and spinning apparatus produce power when they are used, and, effectively, fuel themselves. The gym is designed to be used as a fitness vehicle, as
well for people of reduced mobility. It has physiotherapy rooms, a psycho-motor rehabilitation unit, as well as nutrition and dietician consultation areas, and it offers all-round, well-being for all the family. Physiotherapist José Ignacio says the energy produced by the gym machinery is re-used,
but it is not quite enough to fuel the entire building and all its functions. And “storing” energy generated by people exercising, to avoid buying power from outside, is illegal. But the system does cut down the volume of traditional power needed to operate the business. Also, those who create this energy can “store” points from how much they generate, and receive discounts on gym services, or on their monthly subscription fees. As society is becoming more aware of the need to protect the future of the planet,
and the importance of nonpolluting energy sources, this provides the perfect incentive for those who would otherwise fail to make a personal commitment to visit a gym for work-outs regularly. While most gyms ban mobile phones, or the use of them, at least, this fitness centre actually encourages users to bring theirs with them, download the gym App and use it to manage their activities, book timeslots on machines, and make appointments with their personal trainers and physiotherapists.
They can also plug their phones into the cardio machines to charge them, and electric-car users can charge their vehicles in the car park. The cardio machines are actually available from a company in A Coruña, Galicia, only. They are made in Indonesia because of the high costs of creating them in Europe, where they are far from mainstream. The idea of “eco-gyms” started in the US, and a few have been set up in Europe, but this is the only fullyequipped one to have been recorded in Spain, yet!

Climate change a threat to half the human race! MORE than half of all Spaniards believe climate change will threaten their health, the economy and even the survival of the human species, reveals a YouGov study.
LAST Friday saw the first of Activate Sports Club’s BeachVibes Friday, at their Fuel RestoBar & Beach Club. These nights are an afterwork event like no other. Canarian Weekly attended the evening, and what a great success it was. People were relaxing either at the bar, in the restaurant or on the club’s beach, listening to chill-out music, played by the live DJ, and eating healthy food and drinking cocktails. It was a great way to
wind down and start the weekend, and it was good to see both adults and kids playing volleyball, and having fun running around. Well done to Activate for putting on a great event, and we look forward to the next one.
Health is their main concern, with 64% fearing that lives could be put in jeopardy by the appearance of new and more deadly diseases, and a rise in extreme weather events. And 52% believe that climate change will cause newworld conflicts for natural resources like water, and will, ultimately, endanger
the future for mankind. Spanish pessimism runs even deeper than that, with 51% believing that climate change will have a huge impact on their pockets as it pushes up the price of energy, food and insurance. And those earning the least, feared it most. Those earning under 12,000 euros annually (44%) said that measures to combat climate change would weaken the economy, while just 35% of people on double that salary shared the same opinion. But, the survey showed, climate change has become a reality accepted by everyone… since 0% of the respondents believed it was a myth!

‘Illegal’ warship Chef denies dismembering, taunts Rock or even killing, his partner with Spain’s national anthem
A SPANISH warship has sailed into British waters off Gibraltar, “illegally”, while blasting out its national anthem. Fisherman Nicholas Karnani, from Gibraltar, filmed the naval vessel passing the Rock, before uploading the incendiary clip to Twitter. In the video, “Marcha Real” can be heard blaring, in what was the latest gesture of military might, near the British Overseas Territory. Karnani wrote: “Enough is enough. It may not undermine sovereignty for the UK, but for us Gibraltarians, it’s an invasion of BGTW (British Gibraltar Territorial Waters). The UK Government must take action in defence of its people.” The UK Defence Journal also confirmed the incident, revealing that the boat was an Infanta Elena, a Descubiertaclass corvette, dating from 1980. Another Gibraltarian, John Connor MBE, said: “Clear provocation. Looking forward to the Foreign Office’s
impotent, PC verbal response.” This inflammatory, military exercise by the Spanish followed the arrival of Britain’s nuclear submarine, HMS Astute, in Gibraltar last weekend. Last month also saw a Royal Navy ship off Gibraltar fire a warning flare, when a Spanish Guardia Civil boat got too close to nuclear submarine HMS Talent. There have been growing tensions between the UK and Spain since discussions over the future of Gibraltar’s sovereignty emerged, following Brexit talks. Spain’s troublesome Foreign Minister, Josep Borrell, ignited fierce debate, saying: “I think the United Kingdom will split apart before the Kingdom of Spain.” He also claimed Spain would not stop an independent Scotland joining the EU, while Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez appeared to reopen the debate on the sovereignty of the Rock.
CESAR Roman, otherwise known as “the King of the Cachopo, denied in court that he had killed his 25-year-old partner, Heidi Paz, and dismembered her, in Usera, Madrid, last August. But police say the suitcase
in which Heidi’s torso was found, is the same one Roman was seen dumping in a storage unit, shortly after her disappearance. The victim’s body was found with her head, breasts and limbs cut off. A taxi driver testified that he drove Roman to a warehouse on 5th August, and helped him with his “heavy” case, which, he claimed, weighed around 60 kilos.
A subsequent fire at the storage unit led to the discovery of Heidi’s body on 13th August. Police are yet to find Heidi’s limbs, but preliminary reports showed that she died as a result of asphyxiation. Roman, well-known for his chain of five restaurants, which all served the traditional Asturian dish “Cachopo”, denies killing the victim.

Continued volatility for sterling By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
THE pound has remained highly volatile over the past couple of weeks, with ongoing Brexit uncertainty leaving the currency on the defensive, against its peers. This volatility saw GBP/ EUR trade in a range of 1.131.12 euros, and resulted in EUR/GBP holding at £0.88. GBP/USD fell from $1.28 to $1.27 over the last two weeks, while EUR/USD has slipped from $1.14 to $1.13. The pound continued to be met by volatility throughout the last half of
November, with the EU’s sign-off on a withdrawal prompting some temporary gains, before the Bank of England’s gloomy Brexit analysis sent GBP exchange rates reeling, once again. Concerns over a prolonged slowdown in the Eurozone have remained a major concern for EUR investors in recent weeks, with the
euro facing pressure, as November’s PMI readings indicate the bloc is struggling in Q4. Meanwhile, the US dollar remained on the offensive over the second half of last month, apart from a slight blip at the end of November, in the wake of some dovish remarks from FederalReserve Chair Jerome
Powell. The pound is likely to remain guided by Brexit developments over the next couple of weeks, with a vote on Theresa May’s Brexit deal, on 11th December, likely to be a key test for GBP investors. Any rejection of the deal is likely to put the UK on the path towards a no-deal
Brexit. EUR investors will be focused on the European Central Bank’s final rate decision of 2018, with the euro potentially softening, if the bank strikes a morecautious tone, given the recent slowdown in the Eurozone. Finally, the US dollar may remain elevated in the coming weeks, if political uncertainty in Europe continues to drive investors to safe-haven currencies. Coca-Cola workers fizzing again, after their five-year fight COCA-Cola workers in Spain are celebrating the end of a five-year labour conflict, thanks to an agreement reached by their unions with the company. The workers have been facing uncertainty since the global drinks giant announced plans, back in early 2014, to shut four of its plants in Spain, to “strengthen the brand”. It would have led to 821 employees being made redundant. But though all the factories put up a fight, every one of them, besides the plant in Fuenlabrada, in the Greater Madrid region, eventually caved in. The Supreme Court in Spain finally declared the redundancies illegal, and ordered Coca-Cola to give all of them their jobs back, on the same terms as before, or compensate them if they had already found alternative work and did not wish to return. After months of ongoing industrial conflict, Coca-
Hotel chain’s 500m records are hacked Cola opted to open a logistics centre in Fuenlabrada, but staff complained that they had no work to do, and were scratching around for ways to fill their days. Again, they applied to the court, but this time the judges ruled in favour of the company. Employees announced plans to appeal to the European Court of Justice in Strasbourg, but a deal struck between their union and Coca-Cola last Thursday persuaded them to call off the legal action. The deal involves a twoyear plan to set up a work centre, within a 70-kilometre radius of Madrid city, for staff
aged under 58, with each employee being given compensation based upon age. Those aged 58 and over will be retired early. The Fuenlabrada logistics centre will be closed, and Coca-Cola has guaranteed that its staff will remain in employment for the next two years, at least. And, once that is over, the workforce will not be left “high and dry”, or facing “forced redundancy”. The plight of CocaCola workers, attracted widespread media attention, and they were backed by numerous leftwing politicians, including Pablo Iglesias, leader of Spain’s third-largest party, Podemos.
THE personal records and information of a staggering 500 million guests, linked with Marriott International, have been involved in a data breach.
The hotel chain, with multiple accommodations in Spain and the UK, has announced that the guestreservation database of its Starwood division has been accessed by an unauthorised party. An internal investigation revealed that the hacker gained access to the Starwood records, going all the way back to 2014. Customers affected will be notified, according to Marriott International.
Starwood brands include W Hotels, Sheraton, Le Méridien and Four Points by Sheraton. The details, believed to have been accessible to the hackers, are said to include each customer’s name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, date of birth, gender, arrival-and-departure information, reservation date and communication preferences. It is not known whether the hackers had access to the payment details of all 500 million guests A Marriott spokesperson said the company was alerted by an internal security tool, that an unauthorised party was trying to gain access to the Starwood database.

Why is it Tax Efficient to hold a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond?
S
etting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. If you are thinking of investing but concerned about the tax implications of a bond, read on to see how it works. Tax may be payable if you were tax resident in Spain when you invested in your bond and you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The applicable tax rate will depend on your residency status and your individual circumstances at the time you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The Individual Income Tax (IIT) regime applies to all individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the Special Tax regime. A withholding tax of 19% over the gain from your bond will be operated. This will be paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. So, how does it work? Look at the generic example below:
Example of a Partial Surrender – no previous chargeable events Premium (initial value assumed used)
€100,000
Surrender Value
€130,000
Partial surrender amount Policyholder resident/Spanish resident before chargeable events (Initial premium/surrender value) x partial surrender amount (€100,000/€130,000) x €5,000 (€5,000 - €3,846.15) Tax at 19% on taxable income (€1,153.85 x 19%) Amount paid to policyholder Surrender value – partial surrender amount (€130,000 - €5,000)
€5,000 Yes Portion corresponding to premium and non taxable €3,846.15 Taxable income (€1,153.85) Tax due €219.23 (€5,000 - €219.23) = €4,780.77 Closing surrender value of Bond €125,000
The above example is for illustration purposes only, your personal circumstances will determine how the bond is taxed. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Sir Cliff Richard - 60 Years In Public And in Private c h o i c e ITV1, 21.00 This new one-off documentary for ITV features exclusive access to music legend Sir Cliff Richard following one of the toughest periods in his career as he celebrates 60 years in show business. Featuring interviews with Sir Barry Gibb, Olivia Newton-John, Hank Marvin, Jimmy Osmond, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Brian May and Dame Joan Collins, this programme reflects on Cliff’s six decades at the top of the charts. Filmed over a six-month period at his home in Portugal, at Abbey Road Studios and at Wimbledon, as he prepares to launch his 104th album, leaving the events of the last few years behind him, Sir Cliff talks candidly about his career highs and lows and his record-breaking longevity. In his first in-depth TV documentary interview in years, Cliff talks about the dark days that followed the BBC televised raid on his home in 2014, his battle to clear his name and the people whose support have got him through tough times. In the programme, he throws open the doors of his winery in Portugal to 1,400 fans, for whom he performs an acoustic concert and poses for individual photos.

Mrs Wilson BBC1, 21.00
More desperate than ever to find out the truth, Alison (Ruth Wilson) delves further into her shared past with Alec (Iain Glen), remembering both the good times and the terrible - and trying to uncover the true depth of her husband’s lies. Hearing wildly differing theories from different angles, one painting Alec as a wronged hero, the other as a cruel fantasist, an overwrought Alison is no longer sure who to believe. A final shock revelation inspires a profound and drastic new beginning for her.

All smiles as op kids Christmas party drive to local theatre Live Arico News
A HOSPITAL in Bilbao allows children to “drive” themselves to operating theatres in toy electric cars, to let them assume their ordeal is actually a lot of fun. The IMQ Zorrotzaurre has bought a job-lot of babycars, which porters operate by remote control. And the kids, kitted out in gowns and gauze caps, climb aboard and steer the
machine. At least, that’s what they think they’re doing. Hospital staff say the journeys, from wards or A&E to the theatre block, were always punctuated with sobbing, and calls for mum or dad, among other displays of nerves and anguish. Naturally, these trips were extremely distressing for the kids, as well as those working in the department. Now, though, most of the children, aged two to six, are excited about driving to the operating theatre,
and everyone who uses the car is calm and contented, with no tears for fears. “It’s a simple idea, but it’s proven to be of great value in terms of humanising paediatric surgery at our clinic,” said Dr Nicolás Guerra, Director-General of the IMQ Clinics chain. He added that the toycar idea had already been adopted by some State hospitals, as well as those in the UK, France and the US, where they are already stocking toy cars for theatre trips.
Scooter tragedy may spark stern new law
A JUDGE is investigating the death of an elderly woman, who was struck by an electric scooter as she was out for a stroll with her walker, in the Catalan town of Esplugues de Llobregat, last August. It is the first known case in Spain of a pedestrian getting killed by a personal transporter, raising renewed concerns about the rapid increase of alternative mobility devices in cities across the country. What happened to her could happen to anyone, and, last month, Interior Minister Fernando GrandeMarlaska said the criminal code would be reformed, to try to address the conflict between pedestrians and those using the devices.
The Minister said that users themselves were “vulnerable”, but he added: “They can also cause significant harm to third parties, depending on how they use the device.” Prosecutors, and the investigating judge, suspect that the youth riding the scooter was looking down at his cellphone when he crashed into the 90-year-old woman. The youngster is facing possible charges of involuntary manslaughter, while a second youth, who was with him, has been summoned as a witness in the case. Sources familiar with the investigation told newspaper El Pais that the rider was using the Google Maps app on his phone, when he crashed into the woman. The accident took place on a pedestrianised section of the Rambla del Carme thoroughfare. The scooter was moving at nearly 30
km/h, which is normal for this type of personal mobility device. But several municipalities, including Madrid and Valencia, have already introduced rules banning the use of scooters on sidewalks. In August 2017, Barcelona moved to ban Segways and electrically-powered scooters and skateboards from the historic city centre. And the Spanish traffic authority (DGT) is working on national guidelines. Manoli, a store owner in Esplugues, wants these devices to be regulated, to avoid more tragedies. “What happened to her could happen to anyone,” he said. “When I see one of those scooters going by at full speed, I get the shivers.” Jorge Ordás, Deputy Director of Mobility at Spain’s traffic authority, told the newspaper that his department was hoping to set a 25km/h national speed limit for scooters.
OUR Christmas Party is being hosted by Howlin At The Moon, which is under Laguna Park 1, San Eugenio, next Saturday (15th December) from 2-6pm. It will be a great afternoon of Christmas fun and entertainment. We are dedicating this benefit to poor little Fleur, who was spotted by a driver at the weekend, tied up behind a garage. She was emaciated and in poor condition, and had a carrier bag covering her back leg. Once removed, it exposed a huge tumour that has caused her a lot of suffering, for a long time. She is now with our vet, and this week will reveal whether she needs to have her leg amputated. Even if she does, this Christmas will be the first that Fleur knows that she is loved. She will be on her way to recovery, and have the best Christmas we can give her. Some of the island's best acts will be at the party to entertain you. There will be raffles, games, football cards and a tombola, and lots of party food available … and plenty of Christmas spirit, or just spirits, in general! So we hope to see you all there, to say thank you in person. It's going to be great afternoon! If you would like to donate a raffle prize, or something for our tombola, we would be very grateful.
If you can't make it on the day, but would like to help Fleur through her treatment, you can donate by Paypal: (livearico@gmail. com). Help from our friends We have received a donation of 200 euros from a group of people who regularly support us. A huge thank-you goes to them all, especially Martin Lyons (building contractor) and Fran Smith. Dog-walking club Every Saturday, the dogs have a fabulous time with the walkers, and are looking forward to going out for a wander again tomorrow, from 9am-1pm. Holidays galore for workers in Britain
WORKERS in the UK and Spain take more annual holidays than any other employees in the world, according to a new study. The poll, by travel agency Expedia, revealed that Spain, followed closely by the UK, are the “least-holiday-deprived” countries. The annual survey measures the holiday habits of some 11,114 adults, in 19 countries.
Most respondents in Spain had taken 21-30 days off in a year, which also applied to more than 50% of UK workers. Despite coming out as the most satisfied countries in the study, however, they still complained, with 47% of Spaniards and 48% of Brits stating they do not have enough holidays. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, Indian workers were the most holiday-deprived, the country’s punishing work culture taking its toll on a whopping 75% of them.

Transgender op beats clock, by a decade!
Cesar Noval performed rapid sex-change surgery
IN just 17 hours, a Spanish doctor has performed radical sex-change surgery, which usually takes up to 10 years in Spain. The astonishing medical breakthrough was performed by a Spanish team, on a 29-year-old transgender man, at Valenciabased private hospital Imed. Gender reassignment surgery can take between 8-10 years through the Public Health system, because the operations are performed by several teams and services. If patients choose private hospitals, they will have four operations over two years, with a six-month gap at least between each procedure. But after training in the US, surgeon Cesar Noval learned how to trim the procedure to just one day.
The pioneering, 17-hour op involved constructing a penis (phalloplasty) and removing the patient’s internal female organs and breasts, while work was carried out on his face to give it a more masculine look. Noval confirmed that the patient, from Valencia, paid more than 20,000 euros for the “express” service. The patient had the surgery two months ago, and is said to be recovering well, although Noval admits his sex life is still somewhat limited. To go through gender-reassignment surgery, a patient must be in good physical health and must have passed thorough, psychological tests. The patient in this case had spent 15 years living as a man and three years using hormone-replacement therapy, with a strong support network.
Molly’s Animal-Care News
Molly’s Xmas party WELL, what a week for Molly’s. On Saturday, we held our Chrismas party charity event at Gulliver’s Grillhouse, on San Blas. It was a fantastic event with lovely food, lots of dancing and Christmas spirit in abundance! All at Molly’s would like to say a huge thank-you to our entertainers: Gary Barnes, Gordon Sharp, Terry Dunne, Norma Jean, Anne Marie Dorrity and Luke Maynard. We would also like to thank those who donated raffle prizes, and, of course, those who attended. We were delighted to raise 645 euros, which will really help to support furbabies, over the Christmas period. More events are planned for 2019,
so please watch this space! We are still looking for animal lovers with a few hours to spare, who would like to join our team of volunteers, either at the shop on San Blas, or the kennels in Charco del Pino. Please contact Paula or Elaine, for more details. At this time of year, we are also in desperate need of blankets to keep the furbabies warm on these colder nights. If you have any to donate, please drop them off, either at our charity shop on San Blas, or at our vets in Los Abrigos. All at Molly’s would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support this year, and send you our warmest wishes for a happy and healthy Christmas.

The Swan’s owner, Anthony and their head chef Tim have, very proudly, put together a very exclusive and special “Rooftop Terrace dining experience”, an intimate fine-dining feast, under the stars! There is a maximum of 10 spaces per sitting, so booking is essential.

Rooftop fine dining, under the stars!
This week’s set menu was a five-course fish feast. The menu will be changed every week, so please call for more exact details. We started with lemon and parsley scallops, seared to perfection, with a pesto dressing, and a fresh side salad with a Caesar dressing. This was followed by mouth-watering King prawns in whisky and coriander, with a side of garlic bread. Next came the salmon fillet in white wine and dill, with courgette and Canarian potatoes, followed by the flavourful Cajun Cod fillet, with savoury rice. Tim cooked all the
food in front of us on his special, outdoor plancha, so it could all be prepared to our taste and specification. To finish, we sampled their delicious, warm, chocolate brownie
with cream! I can tell you, there was a whole lot of empty plates and full stomachs at the end. All the food was washed down with glasses of crisp, white wine.
The meat-feast menu includes fillet steak, herb-marinated chicken and tender duck, and all this for an extremely-reasonable price. It’s a definite must for a romantic
night, or for those foodies who like to eat in a chilled atmosphere. Don’t miss out on this opportunity. For more information, or reservations, call 922 795 865.

Fagan’s Eating House RECENTLY, staff at the Canarian Weekly were lucky enough to be invited to the pre-opening of Fagan’s Eating House, in San Eugenio Alto. The evening was designed to give guests a taste of what they could expect when dining there, when the restaurant officially opened this week. The car park was ample, and almost adjacent to the restaurant. We were greeted by Vicky on arrival, and offered a drink of either bubbles, white or red wine, beer or soft drinks, and shown to a table. It was quite warm, so we sat outside. We were offered a range of food to try, including cold platters of hams, cheeses, smoked salmon, and black-pepper cream on pumpernickel bread, and a variety of hot food, brought out on black slates. On the slates we had smoked goats’ cheese with candied chili, homemade mini burgers, and Crazy Calamari, which was fresh squid, chopped, seasoned and herbed, turned into little cakes and served with chiliand-soy mayo. Also on the slate was Lobster Roll - sliced Atlantic lobster, mixed spring onions and hollandaise sauce, in a
toasted brioche finger bun, and served with root-vegetable crisps. Having a look at the menu, there was certainly something for everyone, including Eggs Benedict, Eggs Royale, Bircher Muesli (Scottish oats soaked in milk and honey, and served with dried fruit) and The Yoghurt Pot, along with the more traditional items like bacon and eggs. These are just some of what was on the breakfast menu. The all-day menu consists of items such as the aforementioned Crazy Calamari, the Fagan Tart (goats’ cheese, onion and blackcurrant tartlet), and freshly-made, seasonal soups. The main couses include: Chicken (grilled spatchcock poussin, with crushed black potatoes, citrus butter sauce and fresh herbs), Veggie Main (Portobello mushrooms with smoked goats’ cheese, confit heritage tomatoes and crispy leeks), and Fagan’s signature burger (homemade beef, chopped and seasoned with their secret blend of herbs and spices, lettuce, chef’s tomato relish and onion rings, in a toasted brioche burger bun, served with red coleslaw). And, not to be left out, the beef (aged rib-eye steak, pan fried in garlic emulsion, with hand-cut chips, béarnaise
sauce and watercress). The full menu is available at www.fagans. es As their website says: “Here at Fagan’s, our daily goal is to create, serve and enjoy fine food. We love fresh food, flavourful food, food that’s in season and food that’s distinct. “Every morning, before opening the kitchen, we stock our shelves
with market fresh ingredients, so that the food we serve you is as fresh and flavourful as can be. We welcome you to our restaurant, and wish you a hearty appetite.” Well done Ciaran and the staff on a great, opening evening. I will definitely be going back, even if it is just for the Crazy Calamari and Lobster Roll.

Chemmy cooks all your chicken dishes: fried, spicy, garlic, honey, roast chicken or Kentucky fried, all accompanied by her homemade sauces. She has now added much more to the menu from escaldon de gofio (a tradtional Canarain dish), sweet and sour ribs, escalope, tradtional vegetable soup (potaje), roast pork and her fantastic mixed grill. Buzanada Roundabout, Buzanada. Open: Tues-Sun 10.30am-10.30pm, kitchen closes 4pm-6pm. Closed Mondays.

What should I carry in the car? By Emma
from Motorworld
AS we are approaching Christmas, you will no doubt have noticed more police on the roads. For this reason, we feel it would be a good idea to remind readers of what they should carry in their vehicle to avoid fines (multas), if they are unfortunate enough to be stopped. We have covered this subject before. If you are stopped, be polite to the officers, and follow their instructions, especially if you are asked to get out of the car. In order to be legal, and for your own safety, you must carry reflective jackets in the car for the amount of potential occupants, so, if your car is a five-seater,
then you should have five on board. These must be kept inside the car, because they must be put on before exiting the vehicle. If you break down on the motorway, put on your jacket and get your two warning triangles from the boot. Position one approximately 15 metres in front of the car, and the other at the rear, approximately 15 metres away. Stay with your car, but it is safer to climb over the safety barrier, and wait for the breakdown truck to arrive. All passengers should leave the vehicle, and wait with you in a safe place ie the other side of barrier, or on another road, safely away from oncoming traffic. Apart from this, you should always make sure you have a legal, spare tyre. Regular checks of this are important, because they could save you a lot of heartache and worry, and loss of time when travelling. With regards to paperwork, this is far more complex. Firstly, you should note that only original paperwork must be carried. *Permiso de ciculacion de vehiculo This is the permission for the car to be on the road.
This document carries the make, model, engine size, fuel type, chassis number, registration number, date of first matriculacion, and the date of the last change of ownership. It also bears the owner’s full name, but no longer shows the address, because of data protection. This is held on the Trafico system. *Ficha Tecnica This is the car’s log book,
holding all the technical data, engine size, model, tyre sizes and the optional sizes permitted, along with the manufacturer’s details and the chassis number. On the reverse of this (the newer versions are A4 size, so details are all on one side) are details about the ITV, and when it expires. It is important to note that there will be a specific date on here, whereas the
sticker displayed on the windscreen only shows the month that it is valid until. *In-date, photocard driving licence This can either be a Spanish one, or, if you are not resident, then a European one. *In-date passport *Up-to-date Residencia *Insurance documents, and the receipt for proof of payment of the premium. For this, we recommend that you have a good “sort out” of old papers, and only keep the most-current, upto-date ones in the car, to avoid any confusion. If you do not wish to carry your original passport and Residencia, notarised copies are acceptable, legally. With regard to the Ficha Tecnica and Permiso de circulacion, for a fee at Trafico, you can obtain what is known as Copias compulsada of these documents, which are legal to carry and produce, if stopped the police. Other things you are not legally obliged to carry, but which can prove useful, are a pen and notepad, a small torch, an accident claims form, and a small medical kit. This list is by no means exhaustive, but is a guideline for you.

CD Tenerife
Tenerife fall just wide of the mark
TENERIFE battled their hearts out in the hope of beginning a decent run of form, but they couldn’t quite get the better of a lively Sporting side, despite playing well themselves. The Asturians started quite well at their El Molinón stadium, in José Alberto’s first home game as first-team coach, with two good chances in the first few minutes. The first came from Sousa, who hit the ball straight into the hands of keeper Dani Hernández. Frenchman Babin then missed his shot, after a quick freekick that surprised Tenerife. Perhaps, because of the fright, Oltra’s Tenerife men woke up. They were superior in the final stretch of the first half, and would have gone ahead, had Milla had been more accurate with a shot at an open goal, the ball soaring over the bar. At the start of the sec-

ond half, Gijon coach José Alberto made a double change that altered the game’s shape, bringing on Cristian Salvador in midfield, and Englishman Nick Blackman up front. With two forwards, the Sporting team improved a lot, so much so that Blackman, on loan from Derby County, immediately made a difference by giving more attacking options. But on the hour, Tenerife must have thought they’d gone ahead. Acosta broke forward and slotted the ball past the Gijon keeper easily, only to be ruled offside. Three minutes later, Babin broke the deadlock following a corner for the home team, which should have been cleared by Tenerife, the Frenchman’s athletic strike nestling neatly in the far corner. Then, just four minutes later, Sporting doubled their lead with another excellent goal, this time from Serbian Djurdjevic. He took the ball neatly on his chest, and sent an
overhead kick from 15 yards, flying past a sprawling Dani in the Tenerife goal, to make it 2-0 after 67 minutes. Tenerife had battled all match, and given what was possibly the best overall performance of the season under Oltra. And their persistence paid off in the 72nd minute. The build-up involved slick passing between five players, with Naranjo calmly slotting the ball home to reduce the gap. But Sporting Gijon tightened up at the back, and controlled the last 15 minutes relatively easily until the end, apart from a lastgasp Milla effort, which was easily saved by Marino. Although Tenerife suffered another defeat, there were many positives to take from this encounter. For the first time this season, they operated as a unit, and their understanding of each other on the pitch was greatly improved. And, despite a four-point gap in the table between
14th and 15th places, Tenerife have a really good chance to narrow this tonight (Friday) at home against Extremadura UD.
The visitors are level on points and also struggling. But if Oltra’s men repeat their latest performance, expect a good result!

Lewis Hamilton crash, on Yamaha Superbike LEWIS Hamilton, Britain’s five-time Formula 1 world champion, hit the Superbikes’ track in Jerez de la Frontera, in the Cadiz province, last Sunday… in more ways than one!
Along with compatriot Alex Lowes, the Mercedes legend took a spin, just after the Superbikes’ championship final, astride a Yamaha R1. But he lost control on the Sito Pons bend and bit the dust. Although the bike took a
fearful bashing, Hamilton (pictured), was unhurt, spending the rest of his day at the Jerez circuit, analysing race data, and mingling with race riders. He was also in the company of Spanish bike engineer Toni Cuquerella, who joined in the day’s noncompetitive Superbiking, after regular riders had finished their business. But though Hamilton is better known for his prowess on four wheels, he is a huge motorcycling fan, and owns several bikes. He is often spotted whizzing round famous race tracks on his exclusive, personalised, MV Agusta, just for fun.
However, his visit to the Jerez track led to speculation about his possible future in motorcycling competition, although he has shown no
signs of wanting to trade in Formula 1, or even dovetail it with another motorsport. But he would not be the first driver to do so.
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, ranked among the greatest of all, competed in several Superbikes races after leaving Ferrari, before returning to motor-racing with Mercedes. But he failed to enjoy the same success as he did behind the wheel, unlike the legendary John Surtees, who won the F1 500cc championship in 1964, after collecting four motorcycle world titles, from 1956 to 1960. Surtees, who died last year aged 83, is the only man to have conquered the world in both sports.

Grizzly’s winning feature A SUPERB 116 finish by Grizzly, backed up by his Pub team-mates, made the Division 1 headlines as they disposed of Palms Pool Bar, with an 8-0 whitewash, to retain their top spot. Following closely are Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who swept aside Picasso’s with a comfortable 7-1 home success. And Suters 20:30 Crew are also in the hunt, thanks to Ray’s 180, and a 7-1 victory over Mad Hatters. It will make interesting reading when all the catch-up games have been completed, and Gaffers will have a major say about where the trophy rests, at the end of the season. Promoted teams Sandys and Legends fought out a cracking match, the latter just scraping through 5-3 after an excellent night of food, banter… oh, and some darts as well! Division 2 leaders Water-
fall flattened Ourplace Playgirls 8-0, to maintain their five-point advantage, with Julia contributing with an excellent 180. But they have played two more matches than their rivals. Emerald Lounge ‘B’ are making it a tight division, beating Scooters ‘B’ 5-3 to keep up the pressure, and stay in the race for the main prize. The Loch-In Bullseyes were grateful to Andy B’s 146 finish as they won 5-3 at Sundowners, for whom Paul produced some fine scores. Clouseau’s and Nauta Nomads had a dingdong of a match, the home team finally claiming the trebles, for a 5-3 win in a close encounter. Ourplace Breakaways had the advantage going into the final game at home against Pas O Nadas ‘B’, but the girls displayed their fighting spirit, and pulled off a draw by winning the trebles.

Ashley banking on the January sales! MIKE Ashley is anxious to sell Newcastle United before the January transfer window. And it looks as though the multimillionaire boss is on the right track, at last, after his 11 turbulent years there. Non-disclosure agreements are believed to have been signed last month, and at least one of the interested
parties is wealthy enough to deal with the controversial Toon boss, without askingprice complications. In fact, there could be at least two bidders, who have proved to be serious about the purchase, and both are keen to maintain secrecy. Former Chelsea chief executive Peyer Kenyon has been trying to attract US investors, so that he can launch a takeover, but he could be struggling to raise the necessary funds.
A Turkish consortium has shown a firm interest since
the start of the season, and, in addition, there are claims that a “multibillionaire, not from the US”, has also made an “acceptable bid” in the last week or so, and is awaiting Ashley’s response. But because of his numerous, failed attempts to sell the club, it is vital that these prospective buyers appear to have convinced him they have the funds, and the ambition, to take the club forward. That really would delight
fans, because Ashley, who is asking for more than £300m, confirmed to MPs at a parliamentary select committee, looking into his retail business, that he is in talks and would like to get the deal done before the January transfer window. “I am hopeful, for the Newcastle fans, for the club and for everybody, that we will be able to get an owner in who will please everybody,” Ashley told Sky News.
