Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice

T

he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 euros or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative?

A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been:

2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 7.6% 7.5% 10.3% 6.5% 7.8% 7.8% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Drones force closure at Gatwick Airport FLIGHTS from Spain and the Canary Islands to Gatwick Airport were cancelled yesterday (Thursday) after a spate of drone sightings there. It means that British expats, flying home for Christmas, will have had to rebook their flights, or, possibly, cough up hundreds of euros more for another flight, after airport chiefs closed down Gatwick’s runway. The drones were first spotted flying over the airfield, late on Wednesday night, and the runway was shut immediately. It was then reopened at 3.01am, before closing again after another drone was spotted. One British expat, set to fly on an 11.20am Norwegian

flight, from Malaga to London yesterday, received a notification saying the flight was cancelled. “This is ridiculous,” she said. “Thousands of people are affected by a bunch of drones, and most of us are trying to fly home for

Christmas. “After buying all our presents, the last thing we need is to have to fork out for another flight.” But at least one drone was still being operated over Gatwick, when the Canarian Weekly went to press last night.

V de Vendetta, superheroes and StarWars all hit Los Cristianos ARONA Mayor José Julián Mena and Culture Councillor Leopoldo Díaz Oda, along with the exhibition organiser Francisco Pomares, have inaugurated the Arona Cómic 2018 show at Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, and it’s on display until 28th December. It is the municipality’s first exhibition dedicated to the comic world, which revolves around three differentiated concepts: on the one hand, the comic V for Vendetta, on the other, the film series Star Wars, and, in addition, the world of superheroes.

NEARLY 50% of Arona’s residents are non-Spanish nationals, which means that the municipality will enter 2019 with more foreigners living there than ever. It will also be Tenerife’s third-most-populated borough, and the fifth across the Canaries. With 100,000 foreigners registered, this historical figure clearly highlights the growth in the South of the

Island. And figures show that Arona’s population has increased fourfold since the figures from 20 years ago. With the South’s population explosion in Adeje and Granadilla as well, the South has become a type of promised land for the foreigner who wants to work. Arona officials, aware of the multi-national population, want to embrace the diversity of nationalities across the South, and are proud that their population now comprises worldwide citizens from as many as 125 countries.

Albanians’ fake IDs unable to trick Canarian Customs THE attempted travel events of two separate groups of Albanians in Tenerife on Monday, and in Fuerteventura the previous Saturday, will surely attract the attention of officials in the Canary Islands. At Tenerife South Airport, National Police detained four men, who were hoping to travel with false documentation. The first two arrested on Monday were aged 28 and 30, and had police records. They were nabbed while trying to board an Irish flight with Romanian documentation. The other two men detained were aged 27 and 19, and had already reached

Ireland, only to be refused entry by customs’ officers. They were dispatched, rapidly, back to Tenerife, after showing Italian IDs. Meanwhile, National Police had already detained four men and two women, aged between 18 and 46, at Fuerteventura Airport, trying to board two different flights, destined for the Emerald Isle. While they were being held, last Saturday, it was revealed that all six were also Albanian nationals, and police are still investigating why they needed fake IDs. Presumably, Ireland was the aim for all 10 Albanians because their probable target, England, was just an hour’s flight from there.

A PINK wave took over South Tenerife. shortly after 10am last Sunday, when more than 5,000 people began to gather for the annual Walk for Life, to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer.

The annual 4km walk started from Arona’s Golden Mile to Plaza Salytien in Adeje, and participants had performances and a flash-mob dance to keep them entertained, along with a steel-drum band and bagpipes, which led the way. The walk also has a new mascot, a Butterfly, which is still looking for a name, to be decided after online suggestions. This year’s walk raised an exceptional sum that topped more than 35,000 euros, which will be used for a variety of cancerrelated support, as well as investigation projects. Among the 5.000-plus walkers were Foundation President Brigitte Gypen and various members of Arona and Adeje Town Halls, including both mayors, José Julián Mena (Arona) and José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga (Adeje). Both mayors, who addressed the crowd before they set off, stressed the importance of having a fully-functional, oncology unit, in South Tenerife’s asyet uncompleted, El Mojon public hospital, in Arona. “My wish for next year’s walk is that we will finally have a public hospital here,” said the borough’s Mayor. And Adeje’s Mayor took up the theme, saying: “We continue to press for a quality, public-health service for everyone, and we are doing everything we can

to make that a reality.” José Julián Mena, also said it was a day to remember, and to celebrate those who couldn’t be there for many different reasons. He added that it was a source of pride for him, “to be here in Arona today and see the south of Tenerife united as one, dressed in pink… the colour of awareness and sensitivity”. José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga said: “For another year running, people in the south of Tenerife have demonstrated their high level of solidarity with those most in need. “That is those with cancer, and, in particular, those with breast cancer, and their families.”

Floating body was that of tragic Amy

THE results of a DNA test have confirmed that the body found of the Puerto de la Cruz coast some two weeks ago was that off the young British woman Amy Gerard.

Sources close to the family said the DNA results confirmed their worst nightmare, and they are “truly devastated” that Amy is no longer with them. Amy, 28, who studied animal behaviour at Lincoln University, and was a killerwhale trainer at Loro Parque, left her Puerto de la Cruz home on 29th November to celebrate a friend’s birthday at nearby Irish bar Molly Malone. She attended the party

with her partner, Dennis Kissling, as well as a few more workmates from Loro Parque. But when the party finished, Amy left the bar alone, Dennis departing some time later. It was 1st December when police were notified that there had been no sightings of her since the party, which is when the search for Amy began. A few days later, a body was spotted, floating in the sea at the port side of Puerto de la Cruz, near the lighthouse. But it displayed no signs of a violent death. However, now there is confirmation that it was Amy’s body, police have opened an investigation into what actually happened to her after she left the bar, late that night.

Violent robber launched vicious attack on tourist A MOROCCAN, aged 31, and well known to the National Police, was arrested by the force last Friday night after reports of a vicious break-in at a hotel on Tenerife’s south coast. The thief already had a police record for similar crimes of violent robberies, and, on this occasion, he entered the hotel room, via the balcony window, and startled a couple of

holiday-makers, who had been asleep. The husband went to see what was going on, and, when he came across the individual, face to face, the thief had his wife’s purse in his hand. When the man tried to retrieve it, he was attacked violently, taking several punches and bites, and was left in a state of shock as the thief fled through the hotel window. Moments after the attack, the Moroccan was spotted by a hotel security guard, who intercepted him and then alerted the National

Police, who soon arrived and questioned the victim as well as the thief, whom they also searched. They found two designer watches, in addition to three pieces of expensive jewellery, all belonging to the tourists, so the robber was arrested and charged with violent robbery. The husband was taken to a nearby medical centre to have his injuries treated, before filing an official complaint. The wayward Moroccan is in police custody, awaiting a court appearance.

NEWS IN BRIEF Another Cancer Charity Caravan rocks and rolls!

SOMEHOW, a caravan rolled over, off the road and on Las Playitas beach in Fuerteventura, in the Tuineje municipality. The Canarian Emergency Services shared a post, including images on the Twitter account of how the caravan ended up. An ambulance team, along with the Local Police, arrived at the scene to assist with this unusual turn of events. Both caravan occupants suffered neck injuries, but not of a serious nature, fortunately, and they were taken to a nearby clinic for further observation.

Helicopter to the rescue

THE pilot of a Canarian Government’s emergency helicopter was called on to assist in a rescue operation last Sunday in La Gomera. The incident happened at Valle Gran Rey, on the popular Barranco de las Torres walking route. Emergency assistance was requested after a woman fell and suffered leg injuries, which hindered her from walking. Her legs were badly injured, and, because of the location, the helicopter was essential. She was airlifted to a helipad in San Sebastian, where an ambulance was waiting to take her to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Ron and Jenny present the money to Carol Salisbury (centre)

THE Cancer Bus Charity received a cash boost towards buying another bus to transport sufferers here in the South, thanks to the Bay Bounders golf society, from Los Palos Golf, who raised 760 euros at their annual dinner. It was held at Palm Sports Bar, Costa Adeje, and Carol Salisbury, founder of the charitable organisation, which continues to blossom, accepted the money from Jenny Constable and Ron Dixe, who have been involved with the Bounders for over 20 years. Carol told everyone how pleased the Charity was that it could now begin planning a

second bus, to get cancer-sufferers up to Candelaria Hospital, at a time when there is still no other speedy option for patients here in the South. Bay Bounders’ Paul Kettle organised the entire event, which achieved such a terrific contribution to the new Cancer Bus; not least because Palm Sports Bar also contributed, as a thank-you to Bay Bounders for holding the event there. The staff and owners at Palm Sports Bar ensured that the Bounders had a good time, with an excellent meal and entertainment. Apart from a tasty three-course meal, the Bounders were entertained with games and quizzes, followed by entertainment and karaoke, during which a number of fine voices were heard from the Bounders. Exploding gas bottle shock

Lottery thief ’s number is up!

A 32-YEAR-OLD man, who has an extensive police record, was arrested in La Laguna and charged with stealing some 300 Christmas tickets from a lottery shop. The suspect was said to have adopted many ways and means to keep his identification and location a secret from officials, until he was finally caught and arrested on Monday afternoon. The robbery happened two months ago in Los Realejos, when the accused broke into the lottery shop by forcing open the door locks, and helping himself. National Police officers began their investigation by tracking down the thief, pin-pointing areas where he was selling the stolen lotto tickets. He was arrested, and, along with the evidence, was presented before a judge, and is now awaiting sentencing.

AN explosion from a gas bottle at an apartment block, undergoing a refurbishment in Gran Canaria’s Santa Lucia de Tirajana, injured two people, leaving one in a critical condition. The incident happened just after 9am, at the Calle Tintoreto block. Emergency services sent ambulances to the scene immediately, and, on arrival, medics were met by the couple with severe burns. One victim, who suffered severe facial and

neck burns, was transferred to a nearby hospital immediately, because he was in a critical state. The other person, who had serious burns to his hands and face, as well as his lower right leg, was also taken to hospital for treatment and observation. Firefighters extinguished the flames and ventilated the apartment, as well as inspecting the premises for any structural damage caused by the explosion.

Body recovered in sea

A SAILING boat, chartered privately, recovered a man’s body from the sea, some 30 metres off the coast of Puerto Rico, in Gran Granaria, on Tuesday afternoon. An emergency call was made around 2pm, the caller stating that he had just removed a man from the

Ken and Caroline tune up for Callao Salvaje concert

water, who wasn’t breathing. The emergency services dispatched the necessary resources while the boat took the body back to a dry dock in Puerto Rico. Once there, the boat was met by Guardia Civil officers, who took charge of the proceedings, and an investigation.

Brits’ travel document to enter EU countries

BRITONS will have to pay to travel to EU countries after the UK’s Brexit has been completed. But although UK travellers will not need a visa, they will have to pay seven euros every three years. The European Commission has confirmed that Brits will have to apply and pay for a document called an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). It is expected to come into effect from 2021. The form is said to take around 10 minutes and it is compulsory for anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 to pay the fee. Details needed for the form include passport information and background questions, about criminal re-

cords and medical illnesses. The EU says most applicants will find out if they have been successful within minutes, with more than 95% approved automatically. However, they can be denied, and, in worst case scenarios, take up to four weeks to be processed. If successful, the ETIAS will be valid for three years and allow an unlimited number of border entries. It will be checked when entering different countries. Under the Brexit deal, EU citizens and UK nationals will still be able to travel freely with a passport, or identity card, until the end of the 2020 transition period. When the UK leaves the EU, the European Commission has announced that Brits can travel visa-free for short stays, as long as the UK offers the same in return. The form will be compulsory, with or without a deal.

HUNDREDS of residents and visitors, from all nationalities, come together in Callao Salvaje every year on 23rd December for a multi-lingual, multicultural carol concert. This event, now a firm favourite in Adeje’s Christmas calendar, comes courtesy of local Scottish residents Ken and Caroline Cumming. And this year, marking the event’s 10th anniversary, the couple received a special plaque from Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga, in recognition of their work in this regard. Also present at the presentation of the plaque was Callao Salvaje Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo.

The couple also work closely with the department for citizen participation, under Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, in organising the annual event. The Mayor thanked the couple, saying: “We are so grateful to you for the work you do, for the interest you show and for the collaboration you give in a selfless way, for the benefit of all.” Ken and Caroline arrived to Tenerife almost 15 years ago, running a language school, initially. Just over 10 years ago they moved to Callao Salvaje to open up its Community Church. Ken said: “We thought, as it was coming up to Christmas, that it would be good to have an outdoor carol service. We approached Adeje for permission and this was granted, along with some practical support. “The first year saw about

150 people in attendance, and it has grown over the years, with the invaluable support from Adeje Council, the Alcalde and various councillors, including our local councillor, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, the Culture Department and now, the citizen participation department.” Adeje School of Music has also been an active participant and we can boast that Agoney sang for us before he became famous.” As part of the event, they also collect toys for Adeje social services, and nonperishable foods for the food bank. Ken added: “We seek to help and support every resident, both physically and spiritually in our small area in Adeje. And, by doing so, we want to demonstrate how much God loves all of us.”

WHEN Paula was very little, her father used to sneak into her room in the middle of the night. And, on 27th April, at 9.06pm, she used 219 characters to share the experience on Twitter.

She wrote: “I am 32 years old and I wake up scared in the night when the quilt falls off. I felt the same way when I was little. The man who should have loved me the most, used to throw the quilt on the ground and that’s when everything started #cuéntalo [tell your story].” This hashtag, which went viral in a matter of hours, inspired Paula and hundreds of thousands of other women to break their silence on sexual abuse. “Saying it in such an open way was cathartic,” says Paula. “Difficult, but cathartic.” Paula was one of the 790,000 people, the majority of them women, who wrote almost three million tweets between 26th April and 9th May. The phenomenon even reached Latin America. More than 50,000 of the messages were written in the first and second person: they spoke of murder (9.8%), rape (14%), sexual assault (28%), abuse (15.7%), harassment (35.5%), as well as the fear of going out at night, walking alone or getting home late (29.5%). There were more than 3,500 stories of rape of women under 18, and more than 1,000 of girls under 12. These figures are a snapshot of a spontaneous movement that has spread to more than 60 countries: 34% of the tweets were written from Spain, 32% from Argentina, 8% from Colombia and 5% from Chile and Mexico. It’s thanks to a team of 10 analysts at the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) that the scope of this movement is known in all its detail. Last week, the team

How Paula helped to spark a widespread debate on sheer fear

presented their findings after spending seven months studying the data. The researchers have also created a tool to store the data, which can be consulted and added to, as well as a webpage with the complete information at Proyecto Cuéntalo. It all began with La Manada, the name given to the highprofile trial of five men accused of gang raping an 18-year-old woman at the 2016 Running of the Bulls fiestas in Pamplona. On 26th April, court judges found the men guilty of sexual assault, but cleared them of rape, claiming intimidation and violence were not used against the victim. The sentence caused widespread outrage, and sparked waves of protests in cities across Spain. It was this case that compelled journalist Cristina Fallarás to write the original tweet that launched a movement: “I have started the day proposing we #cuéntalo because I believe almost all of us have suffered some form of sexual assault.” This #cuéntalo hashtag accounted for 2.6m

retweets, 9,500 retweets with comments, 128,400 original tweets and 22,500 responses “Believing or not is a conscious act,” she said. “And neither the men, nor the justice system, were believing [La Manada victim’s] story. And, in part, it’s because there is no common story. I decided I had to call on people to tell it,” she said. Her message triggered a flood of messages: 2.6m retweets, 9,500 retweets

with comments, 128,400 original tweets and 22,500 responses. The #cuentalo movement drew comparisons to the #MeToo hashtag, which was used in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein, sexualabuse scandal in Hollywood, and those that followed. But Fallarás argued: “It is not like #MeToo because there is no one famous behind it.” Faced with the “overwhelming” number of responses, the journalist decided it would be “irresponsible” of her to call on women to share their traumas, if their testimonies were to simply disappear. “It was imperative to conserve this information,” she added. “A flood of messages like this is proof of the irrefutable reality.” These stories included boyfriends who raped their girlfriends when they were drunk, uncles who touchedup their nieces during family dinners, fathers who sneaked into their daughters’ bedrooms, and strangers who accosted

women in bars. “I’ve seen and been through all kinds of situations, and I am still yet to meet a single woman who hasn’t suffered some kind of abuse or assault, said Cristina. “None of us has reached adulthood without some kind of mishap or trauma. Are you aware of the scale of this?” #Cuéntalo Meanwhile, a panel of legal experts, set up by the Spanish Government, is discussing how to toughen up the country’s laws to define any non-consensual, sexual act, as “assault” or “rape”, instead of “sexual abuse”. Under the current law, there has to be proof of violence or intimidation, for a case to be treated as “rape”, but the legal experts will recommend that the maximum jail term for rape should remain 15 years. On 5th December, judges in the northern Navarre region upheld the decision to clear the five men in the “Wolfpack” case. They were convicted on a lesser charge of sexual assault, which carries a jail term of nine years, but the case will now go to the Supreme Court. The men had unprotected sex with an 18-year-old woman in a basement, during Pamplona’s bullrunning festival in July 2016.

Was that San Borondón, seen from Teide’s peak?

WITH perfect conditions on Wednesday from the peak of Teide, spectacular views of La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria were on show. And it was thought that the “eighth” Canary island, the ghost island of San Borondón, also appeared. This ghost island has been appearing and disappearing over centuries, and many stories of the magical place have been passed down, from generation to generation. The mystery surrounding San Borondon was such

that it was photographed, and an article was published in the ABC newspaper, back in 1958. San Borondon’s legends are rooted deeply across the archipelago. They have been a great source of inspiration for many writers, poets and singers over the years, and,

from the images seen from Teide’s peak on Wednesday, it’s hardly surprising. Unfortunately, there was calima haze, which meant that Fuerteventura and Lanzarote could not be seen. Either way, though, what the lucky few witnessed was certainly an eye-opener.

CARMEN Rosa González Cabreram, Adeje Councillor for Works and Services, along with Municipal Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, took part in a water management workshop on Monday, along with 47 children from Tijoco Bajo primary school’s 6th class.

The councillors were also accompanied by Emilio Fernández, Director of water management company Aqualia Canarias, as well as Pedro Gómez, from Entemanser. The visit was part of a children’s project, for them to get an understanding about the hugely-important cyclical role that water plays in our lives, and how it is treated by the participating water companies here in Tenerife. This project began last week with a classroom talk by Pedro Gómez. The talk was in two blocks: preservation, and information about the culture of water in the Canarias, and the integrated cycle of water supply in urban areas. The children, having absorbed the theory, then received practical demonstrations on Monday. Ernesto Iglesias, an Adeje engineer, and Francisco Urquijo, head of water desalination for Aqualia, explained the detailed process of desalination in the borough, and how the installation works. of consumption, as well as the return of water to the environment for its future purification. Cllr González Cabrera said: “These social-educative initiatives by Entemanser are very important, ensuring that our students are aware of the need for proper water treatment,

Drunken passenger is remanded in custody AN airline passenger, said to be drunk, was arrested after being accused of making homophobic remarks to a member of easyJet’s cabin crew, on a flight to Gatwick from Tenerife. The 42-year-old man, from Guildford, Surrey, was apprehended by Sussex Police, who had received “a request for assistance in dealing with a drunk and abusive passenger” at about 10pm, while the aircraft was in flight. The man was remanded in custody, and police tweeted: “Drunk passenger arrested upon landing into Gatwick Airport tonight, due to him verbally abusing a member of crew with homophobic comments during the flight. Unacceptable, and we will be robust with individuals.” A spokesperson for the airline said: “EasyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations, and to act quickly and appropriately, to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time. “While such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour onboard.”

Adeje Council takes care of those in need

13 CW

Flames were seen, right across the Guimar valley

Warehouse blaze was a ‘horrendous’ sight A TERRIFYING fire on Monday night, which began at around 9pm at Motor Valle car mechanics, on the Guimar industrial site, caused huge concern.

ADEJE Council has signed a contract for the provision of nonperishable foods, along with essential products, to assist families in need or/ and at risk of social exclusion in the borough. The new agreement is designed to offer immediate help, and, said Social Welfare Councillor Isabel Fernández González: “We are offering an emergency assistance service, dealing, above all, with those needing food and personal-

hygiene products”. She added that the service would also be addressing the reasons behind the emergency situation that people find themselves in, which places them at the risk of social exclusion. Items provided will include rice, cereals, flour and food stuffs in jars/tins, such as marmalades, beans, as well as hygienic products such as soap, nappies, shower gel, toothbrushes and toothpaste etc. According to Councillor Fernández González, the Council will have a twoyear stock of products for those in need of urgent and immediate attention.

The brothers who own the warehouse said there had been some 40 out-ofuse vehicles parked inside. And as well as the cars, there was plenty of equipment for mechanical work inside the 500sq/m warehouse, which was also damaged. The brothers are well known on the industrial estate, running a successful business for the past eight years. One of the firm’s mechanics said he was called back to the warehouse not long after he had finished for the day. “It was horrendous,” he said. “I witnessed a car on fire, with flames everywhere, and people were trying to salvage what was inside the building, until the fire

services arrived.” Before long, the flames were seen right across the Guimar Valley. And when the firefighters began to battle with the flames, plumes of black smoke were visible, along with the smell of burning chemicals. These plumes were being blown some 200 metres

across the valley, to where the Guardia Civil had cordoned off the area. Although the magnitude of the fire was incredible, there were, fortunately, no casualties. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but Guardia Civil officers are holding an investigation.

Despite Brexit woes, GBP/EUR recovers from three-month low By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound plummeted, recently, to a three-month low against the euro, as the latest, Brexit developments took their toll. GBP/ EUR has since recovered some of its lost ground, however, with the pairing edging up from 1.10 euros to 1.11. EUR/ GBP, meanwhile, has edged back below £0.90. GBP/USD remains over a cent weaker than the month’s opening levels (currently trading at $1.26), while EUR/USD is fluctuating around $1.13. Unsurprisingly, the last fortnight has been dominated by Brexit, with

news relating to the UK’s exit from the Eurozone driving GBP exchange rates. PM Theresa May’s decision to cancel the hotlyanticipated parliamentary vote on her Brexit deal triggered broad-based pound losses, earlier in the month. However, the fact that the PM later survived a vote of

no-confidence was viewed as pound-positive, and GBP/EUR was able to edge away from multi-month lows. The EU has asserted that it is unwilling to negotiate further on the current Brexit deal, and it has been reported that No.10 will now step up planning for a no-deal outcome.

Newspaper offices raided by the cops

D E M O N STRAT O RS gathered outside Spain’s Supreme Court last week after police officers raided the offices of two news organisations. The protesters gathered as more than 650 journalists, from across the country, wrote to the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Spain’s justice watchdog, demanding that the rights of reporters be protected. The action followed raids by Judicial Police officers on the offices of Diario de Mallorca, and on the Palma division office of Europa Press. Officers seized several

documents, connected with a large-scale corruption case, allegedly, being examined by journalists. Maria Ferrer, director of Diario de Mallorca, said police did not present a court order during the search, and that they also seized two personal mobile phones. Initially, she added, they had refused to allow the police inside, citing their journalists’ need to protect sources. Police said the raids were not connected with the news outlets themselves, but they were carried out to determine how the

documents were leaked to reporters. Members of the Madrid Press Association (APM), who demonstrated outside the Supreme Court, said a journalist’s right to confidentiality should be protected. Carlos Martinez de la Serna, of the Committee to Protect Journalists’ reporter-rights group, said the move was an attempt to stop the uncovering of corruption. “The decision to confiscate the reporters’ devices and materials is an unacceptable attempt to intimidate them,” he added.

In other news, the European Central Bank (ECB) adopted a rather dovish stance, following its latest policy meeting, and the US dollar has been fluctuating in reaction to the ongoing trade developments, between the US and China. Christmas is coming, which should mean a period of

relative calm. However, if we see any significant Brexit headlines over the next couple of weeks, the pound could have an excitable start to 2019. Data releases over the next fortnight are fairly sparse, although we do have the Bank of England’s (BoE) rate decision, US growth data, and the publication of the ECB’s economic bulletin to look out for. Voting boost for expats over here

THE governments of Spain and the UK are negotiating a bilateral agreement, to preserve voting rights for the 280,000 British nationals living in Spain, including the Canary Islands. If the deal goes through, voting rights will also be safeguarded for more than 115,000 Spaniards living in Britain, according to diplomatic sources. When Brexit is triggered on 29th March, 2019, Britain will leave the European Union, and British expats in Spain will automatically lose their right to participate in municipal elections. British nationals will no longer be considered EU citizens when Brexit is made official, and Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal would do little to guarantee British expats’ voting rights in Spain. Should Britain’s Parliament back Mrs May’s deal, UK citizens in Spain will maintain the majority of their rights until December 2020, during the transition period. However, voting rights will not be extended to British expats in this time, for

municipal and European elections of 26th May next year. The talks and proposed treaty, to guarantee British and Spanish expats’ voting rights, will require passage through both British and Spanish Parliaments, before it can be declared as law. Diplomatic sources have told the Spanish media this is unlikely to happen, prior to the scheduled 2019 European elections. However, the Spanish Foreign Ministry is considering making the treaty official, provisionally, once it is signed by the two governments. The latest talks aim to ensure that expats are not only able to vote in local elections, but also be elected into office.

What Would Your Kid Do?

Sunday 23rd December, ITV1, 19.00

Jason Manford returns to host a What Would Your Kid Do? special Christmas twins episode of the show which asks how well we really know our kids, by challenging parents to guess what their children will do in a variety of festive situations. The episode sees children filmed in a school specially rigged with hidden cameras. The kids think they’re taking part in a variety of classroom activities and games, unaware that we’re actually testing everything from curiosity to honesty and self-control.

Jason says: “This special Christmas edition of What Would Your Kid Do? with twins is full of surprises. Even for somebody like me who has five kids, the children on the show never cease to amaze me, with most of the parents ending up feeling the same way too. While recording the show I wonder what would my kids do in that situation? Even with my own children I know they’d react differently. It also makes you think - if you were a kid, what would you do?”

Tom Kerridge’s Fresh Start

Wednesday 2nd January, BBC2, 20.00

Last year, in Lose Weight For Good, Tom inspired a group of struggling dieters to lose weight whilst still loving their food. Now, Fresh Start sees Tom turn his attention to families with the belief that bringing them together through home-cooked recipes will make them healthier, fitter and happier. In the first episode Tom meets the eight families for the first time. He introduces them to the first of six steps they will be following to simply get the families cooking together and more often. To spur them on, they are each given a starter pack of fresh ingredients with easy recipes to make at home. They all want to make a fresh start with food, because time pressure, fussiness or lack of confidence in cooking have contributed to an over-reliance on convenience food. Tom takes them through healthier simple options for classics like sausage and mash, which sees the Clarke family from Marlow sit down together for their first home-cooked meal in 15 years.

The BBC shares the magic of the world’s most famous choir through a special year of music, in the centenary year of the Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols from King’s. With behind-the-scenes access to King’s musical performances throughout 2018 and to their preparations for Christmas, discover what makes this one of the best choirs in the world. A Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols began 100 years ago at the end of WW1 as a reaction to the horrors of trench warfare, and remains an unbroken tradition at King’s. BBC cameras follow the last 12 months in the life of the choristers and choral scholars at King’s, where they take part in over 200 services, record a new album, and go on tour, ending with the much loved Festival Of Nine Lessons And Carols which has become a British institution. There’s cricket-mad Jack; novice chorister and keen scientist Vladimir from Romania, whose parents never dreamed their son might one day sing with the choir; Thomas, who last year was chosen by the Director Of Music to perform the solo opening of Once In Royal David’s City; and former chorister David Briggs, who sang in the first radio broadcast of the service in 1928. Among the talent who are involved in this year’s festival, meet the Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir, whose new piece O Mercy Divine, will be premiered at this years’ service. And it is an emotional year for the Director Of Music Stephen Cleobury, who is stepping down after 36 years.

The Young Offenders Christmas Special

BBC1, 23.15 cho i c e It’s Christmas week and the residents of the estate where

Conor, Jock and Mairead live have been fighting eviction from the council for over a month. The residents have created a barricade to show that they won’t be moved to make way for the estate to be renovated, afraid that they might not get back into their homes back if they’re forced out. While all this is happening, Mairead has been sick for weeks and has to be taken to hospital - causing major concern for the lads. Not knowing how to help, the lads ask Mairead if there’s anything they can get her and set off on a chaotic adventure to try make her wish come true, which involves some accidental interaction with a local film crew - and a movie star. But the lads are determined to do something for Mairead, and in the process find out something about themselves and the value of empathy. Conor is played by Alex Murphy, Jock is played by Chris Walley and Mairead is played by Hilary Rose.

Nicky and Steve make a pact not to celebrate Christmas this year. They’re determined to treat it just like any other day. But when Nicky takes pity on Alice, the wily old lady from the village, they find themselves hosting a drinks party, although as Steve is at pains to point out, “It’s not Christmas drinks – it’s just drinks that happen to be on Christmas Eve.” Nicky’s Dad is invited, as are Matt and Meena, the world’s smuggest neighbours. An unexpected turn of events leads to their house guests staying longer than any of them intended. Matt and Meena’s children complain that it’s turning into the worst.

Paul O’Grady returns to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in an one-hour special of ‘For The Love of Dogs at Christmas’. Paul faces his biggest challenge yet as he tries to find homes for dozens of dogs who’ve all arrived together. Top of Paul’s Christmas list is a west highland terrier called Sylvester who is very withdrawn and needs to brought out of his shell. Paul enlists the help of a beautiful bichon frise called Harlow, who becomes Battersea’s resident ‘therapy dog for dogs’ to help him spread festive joy. Paul also helps to bottle feed two three week old puppies who were found dumped on the side of the road having been thrown out of a moving car. He also meets a 10 week old malinois cross who is too energetic and in need of attention to live in a family home, so Paul needs to help find her a job in time for Christmas.

Poplar prepares for Christmas, the nuns travel to the cho i c e As Mother House to elect a new mother superior.

BBC1, 19.45

Sister Julienne is the obvious replacement, and must face this possibility as her future at Nonnatus House hangs in the balance. As they ready to leave, Sister Mildred (played by Miriam Margolyes), an indefatigable sister from their order, arrives unexpectedly with her hands full with four Chinese orphans on route to the Children’s Home at the Mother House. Touched by the plight of the children at the Home, the Nonnatus family and two new nuns, Sister Hilda (played by Fenella Woolgar) and Sister Frances (played by Ella Bruccoleri) come together to give them a Christmas Nativity that they will remember. Back in Poplar, Trixie returns from Portofino refreshed and with her troubles well and truly behind her, and Valerie leads the baby ballet Christmas performance.

The ABC Murders BBC1, 21.00

Despite being warned off the case by Inspector Crome (Rupert Grint), Hercule (John Malkovich) continues to conduct his own investigation into the A.B.C. killer. He receives another letter promising a murder in

Churston. Hercule deciphers that the victim could be someone from his past - Sir Carmichael Clarke (Christopher Villiers) - and immediately telephones his house. Carmichael’s brother Franklin (Andrew Buchan) answers, but Hercule is too late again. Moments later Franklin confirms the worst: Carmichael has been murdered. National interest in the killings explodes. The public begin to panic, turning against Poirot, infuriated by his inability to catch the killer and suspicious of his involvement. Franklin Clarke offers to pay Hercule to catch the killer. Hercule agrees and gathers some of the victim’s family members to ask them questions. There is a pattern to the murders, the killer is following the ABC Railway Guide and choosing his victims by letters of the alphabet. Finally, Crome pays attention.

Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland

BBC2, 21.00 cho i c e In British comedy there is a line in the sand - and that line is Billy Connolly. Before he found fame on an international level, British comedy was an end of the pier kind of affair. But through sheer talent and force of personality Connolly ploughed a different, and deeply personal yet universal, approach to comedy - and in doing so he changed the face of British comedy forever. This two-part series Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland is built around intimate interviews with the great man himself and provides a unique insight into the early influences and motivations that made this comedy legend the man he is today. Part one, of two one-hour specials, feature Eddie Izzard, Ross Noble, Micky Flanagan, Lord Grade, Tracey Ullman, A.L. Kennedy, Val McDermid, Sharleen Spiteri and Eddi Reader.

The Imitation Game ITV1, 22.00

The Imitation Game is a high-energy panel show for ITV hosted by Alexander Armstrong, that sees team captains and top impressionists Rory Bremner and Debra Stephenson lead teams of the UK’s favourite mimics and comedians in a number of fast-paced games and challenges. Each week, both teams go head-to-head as they re-enact iconic movie scenes, re-voice news footage, blast out some surprising cover versions and put unlikely words in the mouths of all kinds of celebrities. Host Alexander Armstrong and regulars Rory Bremner and Debra Stephenson are joined by special guest impressionists in a series of comedy games. Featuring a dazzling array of voices, some horribly miscast movies and show-stopping musical impersonations.

Les Misérables BBC1, 21.00

1815. War-torn France has been defeated at the battle of Waterloo. Convict Jean Valjean (Dominic West) is nearing the end of his sentence in Toulon after serving 19 years for a petty crime and is released by the ambitious prison guard Javert (David Oyelowo). Convinced he will reoffend, Javert forms a deep personal hatred of Valjean. Haunted by his past, Valjean experiences a brutal life as an ex-convict, with prejudice at every turn. But an encounter with the wise bishop of Digne (Derek Jacobi) forces Valjean to consider his own morality and the life he wishes to lead. Little Marius Pontmercy is being raised as a royalist by his grandfather, Monsieur Gillenormand (David Bradley). Marius’ father, Baron Pontmercy (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), a colonel in Napeleon’s army, is accidentally saved from death at Waterloo by a passing looter, Thenardier (Adeel Akhtar). Returning from Waterloo, Pontmercy confronts Gillenormand over his parental rights to Marius - but with tragic consequences.

Raymond Briggs: Snowmen, Bogeymen cho i c e & Milkmen BBC2, 21.00

Forty years ago Raymond Briggs used a pot of coloured pencils to create The Snowman, a wordless book of illustrations which would inspire the film enjoyed by millions of British households every Christmas. His timeless story of the friendship between a young boy and a Snowman continues to delight generation after generation, with its effortless blend of warmth, humour and sadness. After creating an instant classic with The Snowman, Briggs disturbed a generation with his anti-nuclear story When The Wind Blows; enthralled kids and adults alike with Fungus The Bogeyman and Father Christmas and in recent years, moved readers to tears with Ethel & Ernest, a touching account of his parents’ life story. Raymond Briggs has been celebrating the ordinary and making it extraordinary for five decades. And the characters he’s created have been both popular and influential. As Nick Park says in the film, he couldn’t imagine Wallace and Gromit without the experience of reading Briggs’ books. This playful, moving and often emotional portrait is told through interviews with Raymond, specially commissioned animation illustrated by Chris Riddell, and contributions from friends, colleagues and admirers, including Andy Serkis, Nick Park, Steve Bell, and Posy Simmons.

Mrs Brown’s Boys New Year Special

cho i c e There’s a storm blowing in Finglas and it soon claims its BBC1, 22.00

first victim, when the pipes in Winnie and Sharon’s house burst. Thank goodness therefore, for Mrs Brown, who is on hand to offer a roof over their heads while repairs are carried out. However, it’s not long before there’s a storm brewing in the Brown household too, when Agnes and Cathy discover living with best friends isn’t the picnic they’d imagined. And Agnes has yet more on her plate when she receives the news of the death of Nelly Scullie, a neighbour she never knew - or liked - and is asked by Father Damian to do her eulogy. Plus, there’s Bono’s 13th birthday to host. It might all seem too much for Agnes, until Buster drops a bombshell...

Back In Time For School

BBC2, 20.00

Back In Time for School takes 21st century school children on a time-travelling experience through seven iconic eras. From the 19th century right through to the 90s, the youngsters are put through their paces through each time and culture change. The Victorians 1895-1914. Starting in 1895, 15 pupils and three teachers are fast-forwarded through 100 years of education, as they explore what schools taught and the way they were taught it, reflecting the transformation in Britain far beyond the school gates. From a time when only 4 percent of children went to secondary school, these pupils form part of the lucky few, as they get to grips with their Victorian classroom. Strict rules, formality and ceremony inform the Victorian school day, a world away from the pupils’ modern-day experiences. The children and teachers explore scientific revolution, changing women’s roles, school dinners, punishments, housewifery for girls and 1904 Empire Day.

Congress to upgrade lifestyle of animals THE Spanish Congress is in the throes of completing a bill to change the legal status of animals, so that they are no longer “objects”, but beings with feelings. The legislation is aimed at stopping the practice of pets being seized, along with other “assets”, in cases of payment defaults. It would also make it possible for intermediaries to decide which partner gets custody of a pet, after a divorce or separation, with the priority placed on the animal’s welfare. And mortgage and civil procedure legislation will have to be modified to ensure they cannot be confiscated. Under the current Spanish Civil Code, animals are classed as movable property. Now, though, political parties are drafting the final text, after introducing 115 amendments to the original

document over the last year. The updated draft is expected to be finalised by February, 2019. Animal-rights groups have welcomed the measure, although, reportedly, they deem it insufficient. Javier Moreno, the spokesman for international group Animal Equality, said that Spain needed a nationwide, animal-protection law, so

that it would not be up to each regional government to draft policies about such issues as putting down pets. And Eva Ramos, lawyer for the animal-rights party Pacma, said the bill must clearly define what constitutes a pet, and address the possibility of temporary custody of the animal, if there is abuse.

No deal yet over salvaging sunken galleon, says Spain

COLOMBIAN Government officials have denied striking a deal with their Spanish counterparts covering the shipwreck of a galleon off the South American country’s coast.

Marta Lucia Ramirez, Colombia’s Vice President, is adamant that no agreement had been reached on the San Jose galleon which lies, shipwrecked near Cartagena, in the Caribbean. His denial came after Josep Borrell, Spain’s Foreign Minister, said the two countries had reached an agreement, in principle, on salvaging of the wreck.

Spain and Colombia have been at loggerheads over who has the right to salvage the wreck since its 2015 discovery. The San Jose wreck is said to contain gold and treasure, worth hundreds of millions of euros. Ramirez said there was still no agreement on the table, but he is “expecting” to receive a proposal from the Spanish Government on the ship in the near future. “There is absolutely no agreement with anyone, but we are ready to work hand in hand with the Spanish,” he said. Borrell said he had reached an agreement with Colombian officials at last month’s Ibero-American summit in Guatemala. He claimed both sides had agreed not to hire

a private, archaeology company to undertake the salvaging, out of respect for the dead. Borrell added that the Spanish and Colombians had agreed to use a Spanish submarine to survey the wreck. The San Jose galleon was a 64-gun, three-mast vessel, which was launched in 1698 and served with the Spanish Navy. A British ship fired on the San Jose during the 1708 Battle of Baru, causing its gunpowder stores to explode and sink the vessel. All but 11 of the 600-strong crew died. The Spanish claim they have the right to the wreck because it belonged to their navy, while the Colombians insists they do because it lies in their waters.

Virgin celebrating journey into space RICHARD Branson’s Virgin Galactic company has taken a gigantic major step towards realising his “dream” to bring space travel to the masses.

SpaceShipTwo/VSS Unity landed from its maiden space flight as Richard Branson was present to congratulate the Virgin Galactic team and The Spaceship Company. The historic day saw the first human spaceflight to be launched from American soil since 2011. However, more importantly, it saw the very first time in history a crewed vehicle built for commercial, passenger purposes, has completed the journey and returned from space. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced yesterday that pilots Mark “Forger” Stucky and Frederick “CJ” Sturckow will be presented with FAA Commercial Astronaut Wings at a celebratory event in Washington DC next year. The NASA Flight Opportunities Program, was able to complete four experimental tests during the mission, making this Virgin Galactic’s first revenue generating flight. A large crowd of staff and their families, along with the select media outlets, witnessed the launch of the VSS Unity which reached speeds of ‘almost three times the speed of sound’. Virgin Galactic Mission Control confirmed the spaceship’s safe entry into space with the message to the two astronaut pilots:

“Unity, Welcome to Space”. Astronauts Forger and CJ were able to guide the spaceship down to a smooth landing and an emotional welcome in California. Richard Branson has said: “Many of you will know how important the dream of space travel is to me, personally. Ever since I watched the moon landings as a child, I have looked up to the skies with wonder. We started Virgin nearly 50 years ago, dreaming big and loving a challenge. “Today, as I stood among a truly remarkable group of people with our eyes on the stars, we saw our biggest dream and our toughest challenge to date fulfilled. It was an indescribable feeling: joy, relief, exhilaration and anticipation for what is yet to come. “Today, for the first time in history, a crewed spaceship, built to carry private passengers, reached space. Today we completed our first revenue generating flight, and our pilots earned their Commercial Astronaut Wings. “Today, we have shown that Virgin Galactic really can open space to change the world for good. We will now push on with the remaining portion of our flight-test programme, which will see the rocket motor burn for longer and VSS Unity fly still faster and higher, towards giving thousands of private astronauts an experience which provides a new, planetary perspective to our relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. “This is a momentous day, and I could not be more proud of our teams who, together, have opened a new chapter of space exploration.”

City’s 5,000 ‘menacing’ pigeons to be relocated

AN Andalucian city has pledged to get rid of 5,000 pigeons, amid complaints from restaurateurs and hoteliers that they’re driving away tourists. Cadiz will remove thousands of its feathered foes after Horeca’s federation of hoteliers claimed that its tourist hotspot, Plaza de la Catedral, was over-run with the birds. The group said the issue was “intolerable”, having lost 20%

of its business because of the pigeons, which steal food from customers and “leave excrement” everywhere. Horeca, which first raised the problem two years ago, said the pigeons could cause health problems, because waiters can be seen cleaning up faeces, constantly, while the tourists are eating. Cadiz Council decided that the city’s 8,000 pigeons were three to four times too many to sustain. It means that in the next year, some 5,000 birds will be rounded up and relocated to Riba-Roja de Turia.

Chang needs your help!

MY name is Chang. I'm about 5-6 years old, and I was found living in some pipes in an abandoned finca, fending for myself. I had calcivirus, cat flu and infected eyes. I'm leukaemia negative, but Feline AIDS positive. I've been neutered, and I can still lead a good, happy life. I need surgery on the roof of my mouth, because there is a gap through which food gets into my nose. This causes infection and is very uncomfortable. I also have to have a few teeth removed. I am a very sociable and clever boy (I'm Siamese after all), and would love to get this sorted out so that I can be adopted and make someone happy. Please help with my vet bill, by either donating to PayPal at info@cats-welfare-

To all our friends! WHAT a wonderful end to 2018; the support from all our friends of Accion del Sol has completely overwhelmed us.

We would like to thank everyone who has so kindly donated to the refuge for our Christmas event. We will certainly have enough treats to spoil our dogs on Christmas day. We would also like to say a big thank-you to those who regularly give some of their time to take the dogs out. They really love going for a walk. Bundles of joy Last week saw a heavilypregnant mum arriving at the refuge via Protection Civil. She proceeded to give birth to eight, gorgeous little pups, who, so far, are all doing well. They will be available for adoption around the end of January. We do urge you to please adopt, and not buy, a dog. Be responsible owners and castrate or sterilise your animal, to help reduce the ever-growing number of abandoned dogs, here in Tenerife. On a happier note, we would like to wish all our friends of Accion del Sol a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New

Mr Chen, Los Cristianos, Food Review

Mr Chen, now that’s different! by Paul Waller JUST opposite the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, down from the main bus station, near the Hotel Sol Princess, is this new, superb restaurant, brought to you by one of the owners of Wok Chinatown. The concept is the same. You can eat as much as you like for one price, with the added bonus that it is all cooked freshly to order, and brought to your table. With two small areas available to sit, either inside or outside, undercover, this restaurant feels as it is meant to feel; like a little family business with food that is fresh and flavoursome. The staff are very welcoming, speaking both English and Spanish, enabling you to get the most from the Chen family-restaurant experience. As previously mentioned, the restaurant is modelled on the excellent idea of Wok Chinatown, but, in another way, it is completely different, so we decided to try it for ourselves. Why so different? As well as offering some favourite Chinese dishes, this is a fusion restaurant, so it takes inspirations from around the

world, all infused into the world of Chinese food. So what did we start with? It had to be the hosts’ recommendation of an award-winning dish called Crazy King Prawns, wrapped in Greek angel-hair pastry, served with a sweet-and-sour mango sauce. Wow! What a dish! We ordered another one! We also ordered the smoked Canarian cheese in crispy Chinese filo pastry, with a palm tree honey, vegetable spring rolls and a wonderful tempura of King prawns, which were huge and very tasty. We also tried the crispy squid, chicken wings and chicken skewers, steamed dumplings and something we have never tried before, Grilled Xiao Long Bao. These were like very light bread rolls,

stuffed with a pork filling, and they will be ordered again, next time! There are so many starters to choose from, it’s a great reason to have to go back to try the rest. Oh yes, nearly forgot - we ordered a bowl of Wonton soup, too! Once we had demolished the starters, we picked up the menu again and turned our eyes to the main dishes. Prawn Pad Thai, Crispy Chicken and Sweet Chili, Duck with Orange, Fried Ric, Mr Chen style, and Iberic secret Mr Chen. You will have to order that yourself, to see what the secret is! The nice thing about the portions is that they are not overwhelming. They are tapas size, so you get to try different dishes, and look forward to returning really

soon to taste the rest. All of this was plenty for the four of us. The great thing is that if you want more, you just pick up the menu and ask! But there is one rule; you must eat what you order. (You must try it, and eat some of it.) If you order too much, you maybe charged for it, which I personally think it is a great policy, so there is no wastage. Then came the desserts, which are also ordered via the waiting staff, and then brought to your table. As you may have guessed, we were pretty full up, but we did manage to fit in an apple crumble flan with vanilla ice cream, and a chocolate brownie for us all to share. My son also squeezed in another bowl of chocolate ice cream, while we

finished off the meal with a coffee and a Jasmine tea. All this costs only 12.50 euros per person. Under 8s eat for 6.50 euros. The price is fantastic value for money. And, judging by all the people around us, this idea is becoming a very popular choice of many others. Mr Chen is open from midday until 11pm, seven days a week. You get freshly-cooked food, and can eat as much as you want, chosen from a well-thought-out menu, all brought to your table with a smile. Thank you, Mr Chen and your staff, for your family’s hospitality and fantastic food. If you haven’t visited yet, get down to Mr Chen in Los Cristianos, and experience it for yourself.

Christmas food customs from around the world By Val Sainsbury Argentina: After attending Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, a traditional meal would include roast pig, turkey and pan dulce (a sweet Christmas bread). Christmas occurs during the summertime, and many families barbecue Christmas dinner, or spend the day at the beach. Australia: On Christmas Eve, snacks are left out for Father Christmas (biscuits and milk, or maybe some beer), and water for the kangaroos that pull his sleigh while in Australian airspace! Canada: In Newfoundland on St. Stephen’s Day (December 26), Catholic families would have a dish made with dried, salted cod named “Christmas Fish”. Germany: According to German tradition, partaking in a roast-pork dinner on Christmas Eve will prevent evil, and promote prosperity in the New Year. The Germans tend to have a game feast on Christmas day, usually wild boar or venison. Ireland: The traditional Irish Christmas Eve dinner is the “Black Fast” of boiled salt cod and potatoes. There are three special puddings made for the holidays; one for Christmas,

one for New Year and another for Twelfth Night. Turkey with a whisky glaze (whisky and honey, together with a splash of orange) gives an impressive and great-tasting twist to the traditional bird. Italy: Tortellini is a speciality of the Bolognese Christmas dinner, filled with turkey, ham, and sausage forcemeat. Jamaica: Christmas dinner usually consists of rice, gungo peas, chicken, oxtail and curried goat. Mexico: In Oaxaca, Mexico, Christmas Eve is also the Night of the Radishes, when large radishes are cut into animal shapes. The Netherlands: The Dutch eat chicken stuffed with sauerkraut at Christmas, to

mark the end the year and celebrate the beginning of the New Year. The reason for chicken? It’s because it scratches the ground, symbolising scratching the earth over the old year. Norway: Julekaka, Christmas Bread, is a favourite in Norway. It is a sweet, yeast-raised bread, flavoured with cardamom, citron and raisins.

The big festive feast takes place on Christmas Eve. Most people around the

coastal regions eat fish concoctions of cod and haddock, and a variety called lutefisk. Inland, they go for pork chops, speciallyprepared sausages, and, occasionally, lamb. Poland: The traditional Christmas-Eve supper consists of 12 non-meat dishes, representing the months of the year, and featuring fish such as pike, herring and carp. Other typical Polish dishes are fish soup, sauerkraut with wild mushrooms or peas, and Polish dumplings with various fillings. Scotland: Rich tatties and neeps - a traditional dish made with mashed potatoes, swede, carrots, onion and butter, garnished with chives and black pepper.

Sweden: Hiding an almond inside rice pudding is a Christmas custom in Sweden. Whoever finds it has good luck for the New year. United Kingdom: The majority of families (90%) around the UK consider turkey a Christmas tradition. According to the British Turkey Information Service, UK residents consumed 10 million turkeys in 2000 for Christmas, along with 25 million Christmas puddings, 250 million pints of beer and 35 million bottles of wine. Wales: Leek-and-onionsauce accompanies the turkey. Leeks, onion, cloves, breadcrumbs, milk, nutmeg and bay leaves are blended, to create a thickand-creamy alternative to ordinary bread sauce.

Alcohol and drug use

By Emma

from Motorworld

THIS week sees the start of what is, generally, an annual campaign by the DGT, regarding the use, or misuse, of alcohol and drugs during the festive season and New Year, and, of course, the Spanish Christmas, Reyes, on 6th January 2019. The campaign intends to test 20,000 drivers throughout the week, and into the weekend, but it isn’t known how many they

will test here. The intention is to ensure that drivers are safe behind the wheel, and are not putting their own, and other road users’ and pedestrians’, lives at risk, with the added bonus of issuing hefty fines to those offending. Serious cases may see the loss of points, or even driving licences, often for a considerable time. The campaign is being run in conjunction with TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Organisation, which sees 25 countries across Europe being involved, and enforcing the laws by their own means. So, for any readers who are travelling by car to the mainland and beyond, this campaign could also affect you. In Spain, the campaign will be carried out, not only by the Guardia Civil Traffic police, but by local police (Policia Local), and regional

forces (Policia Canaria). The Director General of the DGT in Spain states that the objective is to make drivers aware that it is not only alcohol that impedes driving, but other drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines and opiates, which have psychoactive substances. These have, in many cases, lethal and fatal consequences, when driving under their influence. He adds that the realisation of these preventative controls on the road, is, along with road safety education, one of the most effective instruments to dissuade a driver from getting behind the wheel, if they have consumed any psychoactive substance. Sadly, data from the DGT for 2017, showed that 26% of deceased drivers gave positive results in tests for alcohol, and, of these, 74% showed a rate that was more than three times

higher than the maximum rate permitted, the latter being data or statistics from The National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences. Although data regarding “drug abuse and driving” is relatively new in the terms of how many years it has been studied, and data collated, it is clear that more than 10% of all drivers have consumed more than the maximum permitted amounts of some sort of illegal drug. A sad but increasingly common fact. Drivers should be aware that the DGT consider drug use as very serious, hence the severe penalties, which is in line with those penalties for habitual drinkers, or those with dangerously high levels of alcohol in their body. If detected, the presence of drugs, which are not permitted by law when driving, carry serious fines

of 1,000 euros and six points. However, it becomes a criminal matter, rather than an administrative one, where “driving under the influence of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances” can be punishable by prison sentences of 3-6 months, or a fine of 6-12 months of community service from 30-90 days, and the loss of permission to drive for between 1-4 years. Whilst I am sure that the majority of readers will not fall into the category, the consuming of alcohol is so easy (and accepted) that it soon becomes very easy to find yourself over the limit. If you do so, leave the car where it is, jump in a taxi and collect your car the following day. You may well save someone’s life, and, almost certainly, save your licence. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

CD Tenerife

Derby is settled with a draw and controversy

NO matter what league Tenerife and Las Palmas meet in, you can be assured that both teams raise their game, the fans are more vocal than ever, security is at its tightest, and temperatures can boil over. Last Sunday was no different as they met for the first time this season at the Estadio Gran Canaria, with, let’s be honest, both teams struggling in the first part of the season. Initially, Tenerife struggled to get into the match and Las Palmas had the more positive start and the earliest chances. Their first, a good cross from Fidel right in to the danger zone, saw a good header from captain David Garcia beat keeper Dani Hernandez, but was just a bit too high. The second chance, from a corner, was headed wide. But the home team made no mistake in the 17th minute. Encaró brought the ball forward and released it to Rubèn, who crossed it to Fidel. He made a superb run to the edge of the six-yard box and did everything right, only to

UD Las Palmas 1 CD Tenerife 1

miss the ball. Fortunately for him, Sergio Araujo was unmarked behind him and slotted it past Dani easily, sending the home fans into hysteria with a 1-0 lead. This advantage should have been extended during the first half as Cala and Timor both had chances, but they couldn’t come up with accurate finishing to trouble the Tenerife goal. As they went into the halftime break, it was evident that Tenerife coach Oltra had work to do to get his men into the game, because Las Palmas had dominated.

And, as the second half started, it looked as though the home side were carrying on where they left off, with a curling Fidel shot from 20 yards out, which Dani saved with an outstretched arm. But in the 61st minute, Tenerife were finally on the attack. Good build-up play saw the ball break to Suso, unmarked on the right, who released a shot that was well saved by home keeper Raul Fernandez. Following this attack, Las Palmas broke on the counter and German player Blum, their man of the match, crashed the ball against a post. It bounced out to Araujo, in front of goal, and he headed what appeared to be his second of the match, only for him to be denied by Camile, who nodded the ball off the goal-line to safety. In the 78th minute, the moment that changed the game arrived. Montañes came charging forward, received the ball on the edge of the 18-yard box and struck an almighty shot on the run. The UD captain put his

body between the ball and the goal, and was struck on the head as he turned. Only Montañes gave a halfhearted appeal for handball, yet referee Sagués Oscoz wasted no time in blowing his whistle, pointing to the penalty spot, and sending off skipper Garcia to reduce Las Palmas to 10 men. Amid the appeals and complaints, Suso, the Tenerife No.10, stepped up to the plate and did his job by wrong-footing Fernandez

and levelling the game 1-1, although the penalty decision would certainly have been reversed with VAR! There were five minutes of extra-time added following the penalty, and Tenerife, with one more player, took control. Acosta had a chance to win the match in the closing seconds, but he sent the ball high in to the stands. The final result was bitter sweet for Las Palmas, who must have felt hard done by, but it was a good result for Tenerife, because some decisions this season haven’t always gone their way. It also sets them up well for the final game of the year before the Christmas break, at home tonight (Friday) against league leaders Granada. They will need to complete their chances to get anything from what will be a difficult match. And they will then have time to regroup and prepare for the second half of the season, starting with a home game against Elche on 4th January.

CDT will be sanctioned for homophobic chants CD Tenerife will be sanctioned by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), following the homophobic chants heard in the Heliodoro stadium on Friday 7th December, during their home clash against Extremadura UD. For this reason, the club have urged their fans to remember that “all the songs and actions of encouragement are aimed at giving encouragement”

to the Blue and Whites, “and always with maximum respect for the other team”. A club spokesman said that these types of chants, “which we reject fully”, are punishable, not only for the club, but also to the people who perform them, if they are identified. And he has warned fans to follow the instructions of the different police forces, while demanding respect in their chants.

The worst-attended Canarian derby in years THE derby on Sunday between Las Palmas and Tenerife recorded the worst attendance of the last eight meetings at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, with 19,190 spectators, in a stadium

that holds over 32,000. The Las Palmas crowd was below 20,000 people in the new stadium for the first time, despite the usual presence of 1,500 away fans. In addition, the last Canarian derby in the

league, played in March 2015, drew 8,842 more fans than Sunday’s attendance. In fact, the derby crowd did not exceed the best of the current season, which was for the visit of Malaga on 23rd

September, with 21,350 fans. The previous worst attendance at a Canarian derby was recorded in the last match played in the old Insular Stadium in January 2003, with 14,782 spectators.

The average attendance this season at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, according to official figures released by the club for each game, is 14,382 spectators after 10 home games.

It’s a breeze for Palms THE latest rounds in the Canarian Weekly handicap competitions took place last Friday, with the top guns having to give away mammoth starts. Suters 20:30 Crew 941 found it difficult to claw back a 341 deficit, and, try as they may, they succumbed 5-2 to Palms Sports Bar. The Pub, on 1,001, also tried, in vain, to turn a 500-point deficit against bottom team Ourplace Playgirls, who, to their delight, won 4-3. Ourplace Breakaways also started with a 220 advantage, and made it count as they knocked out

Legends. The Loch-In ‘A’ (921) welcomed Ourplace Playboys with a 20-point lead, and 180s from Gaz and Wayne helped them to a 5-2 victory, despite all the efforts of Del Boy, including a maximum of his own. Mad Hatters hosted Palms Pool Bar, who, unfortunately, could raise only three players. Fair play to them for turning out, although their valiant efforts could not stop a 6-1 defeat. Sundowners kicked off 80 points behind Emerald Lounge ‘B’ (701), but, thanks to some fine finishing and Brian’s 180, they triumphed 4-3.

Two of the top teams met at Gaffers, where the home team won the singles 3-2.

But the doubles went to the last leg, as Richard and Luc claimed the win, and a place in the draw for the next round, for Pas O Nadas ‘A’. In the plate, Darren’s Emerald Lounge upped their

Football

game to overcome a minus 140 start, and win 4-3 against an unlucky Naughty Nautas team. All the best for Xmas and New Year from the Chairman and committee.

Tax-dodger Ronaldo’s plea-bargain gets nod FORMER Real Madrid midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo has agreed to a twoyear prison sentence, after filtering up to 14.7m euros in taxes through front companies during his time with the La Liga club. Although it was confirmed in July that he would accept the penalty, after his lawyer sought a deal with prosecutors, Madrid’s provincial court has, provisionally, given the go-ahead and will ratify the plea-bargain result in a month. The Portuguese team captain, who moved to Torino-based Juventus earlier this autumn, has already refunded the tax he “evaded”, supposedly. But the sum was reduced to 5.7m euros on appeal, and his lawyer applied for the jail term to be substituted for a 375,000m-euro fine. And, as this is his first offence and the sentence does not exceed two years, the five-time Ballon d’Or

winner will not have to be imprisoned. Solicitor José Antonio Chiclán is arranging for Ronaldo to testify on 14th January by video conference, instead of travelling to the Spanish capital, a deal he also achieved for his other football client, Fábio Coentrão. Ronaldo had set up companies, through which to invoice royalties for his image rights, where his name and face are used in advertising. That was recommended by his accountants during his time playing for Manchester United as a young man. This structure had been legal in the UK, and

Ronaldo was unaware, when he moved to Madrid, that this was not the case under Spanish tax law. He is among a number of celebrities facing criminal charges for discrepancies with the Spanish tax authorities, purely through sum involved. Where the sum of tax “evaded” exceeds 120,000 euros, whether deliberately or in good faith, it becomes a criminal offence in Spain, automatically. But below this sum, it is a civil offence and the taxpayer will normally be expected to pay a fine on top of the sum owed, plus interest. But if the outstanding sum is extremely low, such as for the average, selfemployed worker, fines may not even be levied, other than possible late-payment charges. As celebrities of Ronaldo’s magnitude report earnings that, by default, will involve tax bills well in excess of 120,000 euros, those not paying their dues, even if they believed their situation to be above board, could still face suspended jail sentences at least, in addition to fines and interest.

Teenager Holly aims low for record-breaking win

AN 18-year-old Brit shot into the record books in spectacular style by winning the Girls’ Junior European Open Golf Championship, at Andalucia’s El Paraiso course. Holly Haslam, from Essex, became the first female to shoot under-par in the competition’s 26-year history. The teenager now joins the tournament’s previous British winners, Women’s British Open-champion Georgia Hall and US Open winner Justin Rose. “I was over the moon,” said Holly, whose 47-year-old mum, Jo, caddied for her. “It was a big moment for me.” Holly, who celebrated the historic win on her 18th birthday, finished three under par, and seven ahead of her nearest competitor.

She first picked up a golf club at just 11, and the amazing skills she has since honed were broadcast on Sky Sports Golf Channel on Tuesday and Wednesday. Her father, Steve, 53,who also accompanied Holly to Spain for the tournament, is a restaurateur in the UK. “It was the biggest win of her life,” he told the Olive Press online newspaper. “I was ecstatic when she won the tournament.” The proud dad-of-three also said his family would remain in Spain for the festive period at their house in El Paraiso, where Holly is able to stroll straight on to the course. Steve said: “We’ll have a nice family game of golf on Christmas Day, and then we’ll go back home and enjoy our dinner.”
