Return of the Three Kings Cont. from Front Thousands of onlookers turn out every year to enjoy the spectacular Saturday parades, especially in Los Cristianos, where the Arona parade takes place. The best thing about the Three Kings, apart from the presents, the parade and the cake, is that Spaniards are guaranteed another day off work, and children don’t go back to school until after Epiphany! In most other countries, Christmas decorations have been packed away and normal working life has resumed. But the holiday spirit continues here until Sunday. And, for a change this year, Arona’s Majestic Kings will arrive by helicopter tomorrow (Saturday) to Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, at about 6pm, instead of turning up in a boat at the harbour. As for Adeje, Their Majesties will arrive by helicopter at El Galeón’s Municipal Football Stadium, where they will be greeted by an

official welcoming party. Then two hours later, the Three Kings Parade, in Calle Grande, takes place, with lots of special guests from the world of children’s

Arona Council invests to improve its service

ARONA Council is investing 700,000 euros to continue with the extension of the highlevel, fibre-optic lines, in all the municipal’s public facilities. It will result in a better service, both to users of these public spaces and to their own procedures, as well as the administrative work carried out in them. The investment should give its facilities a higherquality network, be it cultural and civic centres, or sports centres and study halls. It will provide the necessary financing for this work, and will sign an agreement with Tenerife Cabildo to facilitate the inclusion of Arona in the insular telecommunications circle. It is also one more step in Arona’s modernisation

and conversion strategy, as an intelligent tourist destination, for which it presented a specific plan to the Cabildo, that will involve an investment of almost 5.7m euros, of which the Town Hall will provide 2.4m euros. Councillor Francisco Marichal, in charge of the modernisation, stressed: “Arona is travelling, in an intense way, on a path towards its conversion into a municipality and an intelligent tourist destination, for which it is necessary to start up various projects. “It’s not only the investment in the extension of the fibre-optic network that is necessary. Both the State and the City Council will need to contribute to start-up projects, to make a total digital connectivity possible.”

cinema and television. Typically, Spaniards tuck into a Roscón de Reyes, a Three Kings cake baked in a ring and decorated with candied fruit and hiding

a, sometimes lucrative, surprise. A small figurine of the baby Jesus, or a little toy for children, is usually hidden inside the dough, as is a dry

fava bean. Whoever finds the toy is crowned king or queen of the celebration, while the one who finds the bean has to buy the Roscón next year.

Arona goes flat-out to bolster its sports ARONA Council’s Sports Department has begun the year by making a commitment to clubs in the area, allocating a total of 711,109.80 euros in subsidies, to improve and develop their individual activities. This makes the municipality a pioneer in terms of the income efficiency of these organisations, because it has never been done like this before, and it represents an 80,000euro increase over last year. It is also 77.8% more than the 400,000 euros with which the previous mandate ended. Half of the money is destined for girls, boys and young people, participating in the activities of local sports clubs of all disciplines. It also fulfils one of the strategic commitments of this mandate, which is the promotion of sports from an early age, in a municipality which has more than 5,000 participants. Not only will the clubs receive these grants, but a total of 20,500 euros will be allocated to the institutes for integration and community action

through sports activities. This will benefit the IES Cabo Blanco, Los Cristianos, Las Galletas, Guaza and Ichasagua in 2019. There are also subsidies for sports federationbased teams, who will receive 288,541.40 euros, including 41,300 euros for senior football teams. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said: “Clubs are the main agents promoting sport in the municipality, so it is essential to collaborate with them and support them. “They will be able to improve and continue to provide a service that results in the health and quality

of life for residents, but, above all, for the youngsters to be educated for a healthy lifestyle.” Mena added: “The clubs themselves, and our locals, know that the commitment of this government is not only in terms of subsidies, but in the improvement of the facilities in which they work, and which they are benefiting from like never before. “The Ayuntamiento has already replaced artificial pitches, installed stands, tannoy systems and markers, in addition to works on football fields and sports halls, as well as more very important projects in the coming months.”

Emergency Services more in demand over New Year MORE than 1,000 incidents, comprising traffic accidents, house fires and those connected with fireworks, were registered by the Canarian Emergency Services over the New Year. Officers and medics attended to 1,004 emergencies during New Year’s Eve, and into the early hours of New Year, the total, supposedly, being three times more than any other December night. In Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, a total of 543 incidents were registered between the hours of 9pm

on 31st December and 8am on New Year’s Day. The other islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and La Palma had 461 emergencies registered in the same period. Of all the emergencies clocked up across the archipelago, 418 related to public safety, while 351 concerned health. The fire services said they had more work to do, compared with other days around the festive season, mainly down to incidents involving fireworks. A Gran Canaria house fire was reported in La Palma’s La Minilla, and a blaze occurred in Tenerife’s Santa Cruz area of La Victoria, which spread across the dry vegetation and caused fire damage to two homes, all sparked off by fireworks.

Cut-price Council!

Ryanair staff off on the same foot again! HAVING survived a contentious year with Ryanair, the airline’s cabin crew have begun the new year in similar fashion, embarking on three individual days of strike action this month.

ADEJE Council ended 2018 by cancelling certain local charges, which will certainly please its residents. They will not have to fork out to register on the “padrón” for travel or residency certificates, among others, which, until now, were free of charge, but only if carried out online. According to a report, presented to the Council meeting just before the new year, the aim of the change is “to speed up the process involved in administration contracts”. And, said Local Taxes

Councillor Epifanio Díaz Hernández: “ With the elimination of certain charges, we will be reducing the time needed to manage money in the public offices.” He added: “In this way, we can also free up human resources, allowing those people, who have to dedicate a lot of time dealing with the cash payments for these measures, to spend more quality time dealing with the public.” Other local charges will be modified, including the removal of vehicles, parked illegally and placed in the municipal car lot. The new cost will run in line with the charges imposed by the company which

remove the cars. Payment methods are also being refined, and the driver affected by a car being removed can make a direct payment by card through a bank ATM or a transfer. But payment cannot be made in cash. Councillor Hernández said: “In a short time, the Council’s aim is to eliminate all cash payments and establish a homogeneous system of payments online, or through transfers. “Ideally, it will encourage more people to deal with the Council through its online system.” A new system of cancelling direct debits for the public was also approved at the meeting.

The Sitcpla and USO unions announced that they will strike on the 8th, 10th and 13th January, following a meeting on 28th December at the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA), which failed to avert industrial action. In a joint statement, the unions said that cabin crew from all bases in Spain would be called out on strike. They say that about 1,800 staff in Spain are demanding better pay and conditions, claiming that all they want is for the airline “to comply with Spanish legislation”. The unions pointed out that the airline still had 10 days to rethink and avoid this new protest. The last major strike by Ryanair staff, in September 2018, led to more than 190 flights being cancelled. At the time, Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “We sincerely apologise to those customers affected by

these unnecessary strikes, which we have done our utmost to avoid, given that we have already offered these unions recognition agreements, Collective Labour Agreements, and a move to local contracts/law in 2019.” But there’s more bad news for the Irish budget airline. According to Which? Travel, Ryanair suffers most from incidents caused by the results of excessive alcohol by onboard travellers. And a new survey shows that one in six passengers reports inflight disruption. In a survey of 7,900 readers, 17% of those who had flown on the airline in the past year reported that they had experienced “shouting, drunkenness, obnoxiousness, verbal abuse or other problems”. Ryanair is, currently, Europe’s largest low-cost carrier, and operates some 2,000 daily flights, from 89 bases in Europe, including 13 in Spanish airports.

Unique rock formation is established in a flash

SPANISH scientists have discovered a unique rock formation in a rugged region to the north of Gran Canaria, close to an archaeological dig. Calcite sediment had been deposited in a series of pools and waterfalls in the Calabozo gulley, which have since dried up. But they would have been reminiscent of the white terraces in Pamukkale, Turkey, or the Iberian Peninsula’s Ruidera lakes, in their day. Pamukkale and Ruidera

were formed over hundreds of thousands of years, yet the Calabozo formation took fewer than three decades. On these volcanic islands, including Tenerife, the subterranean water is rich in bicarbonate, calcium, magnesium, sodium, silicon and carbon dioxide. And towards the end of the last century, the Canarian plantations were irrigated with water from wells and tunnels. Before a modern irrigation system was installed, water was extracted from high, hilly ground, and ran downwards, leaving a trail of calcite sediment

and other minerals in its wake. It was this geological process, accelerated by the irrigation system, which produced the ultra-rapid formation in Calabozo, which is 20 metres high and the same measurement across. The research team, comprising four geologists from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), the Institute of Geoscience (UCM-CSIC) and Las Palmas University, have been studying the phenomenon for seven years. They have just published an article on their work in the scientific journal

Sedimentology, which appears on the front cover of the latest edition. The scientists believe that the Calabozo formation was completed between the 1950s and the 1980s.

And, since completing their Calabozo gulley research, Alonso’s team have found other, similar sediments on Tenerife, and they believe there are yet more, awaiting discovery.

Men who wouldn’t pay restaurant bill arrested

THREE men were detained by police officers after dining at an Adeje restaurant on New Year’s Eve, and then, after refusing to pay the bill, assaulted the staff. The scene caused such a commotion that the rest of the diners, mainly families with children, enjoying their New Year celebrations, left the restaurant for fear of becoming involved in the brawl, unwittingly. Officers were told that when the trio refused to cough up, they began offering several excuses. But the episode suddenly got out of hand, and ashtrays and cutlery were flung across the restaurant, persuading the genuine diners to disappear. Also, an unlucky staff member was hit in the face and needed medical assistance. When the police arrived, they found one of the three men outside the premises, and, once arresting him, officers were able to trace his companions to the reception of the hotel in which they were staying. National Police, working with Adeje’s Local Police, charged the Englishmen with assault. The trio, aged 59, 37 and 20, who ran up a 270-euro restaurant bill between them, are now awaiting a court hearing.

NEWS IN BRIEF Voters want early election

NEARLY 55% of Spaniards are keen to go to the polls early for a snap General Election, if the Government’s budget is voted down. A new survey, from Sigma Dos and a prominent Spanish newspaper, showed that supporters of all parties, including the ruling, left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE), wanted to bring the date of a national ballot forward. The next General Election must be held no later than 2020, and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has, repeatedly, ruled out calling for an early vote. The Sigma Dos poll found 54.8% of Spaniards are in favour of holding an election this March, if the government’s budget is not approved. The ruling PSOE party, governing as a minority party, relies on the support of smaller parties, which include the leftist Podemos and regional groups, to pass legislation.

EU issues a ban on plastic cutlery sales STRAWS and plastic cutlery are among a list of single-use products which, insists the European Union, must be taken off the market from 2021 as part of a fight against marine pollution.

These items are two of the 10 most-frequently-found, discarded products, on European beaches. And institutions within the EU have, “in record time”, closed an agreement to veto their “commercialisation”.

Member states now have two years in which to make changes to their national legislation. The aim is to eliminate

from supermarkets, the plastic products for single use which have “easily available and affordable alternatives”.

Watch Moon eclipse soon

A TOTAL eclipse of the Moon, set to take place this month, will be visible from Spain, according to the country’s National Geographic Institute (IGN). The eclipse, which should begin at around 3.35am on Monday, 21st January, will last for over an hour, says the IGN. The phenomenon will be most visible in the western part of Spain, and it will be also visible from Western Europe, parts of the Americas and the Pacific.

Biker was out of control

A MAN aged 35, who was riding a quad bike, was heavily bruised after losing control of the machine while leaving the TF-21 on Sunday afternoon. The accident happened on a slip road, as the rider was coming off the TF-21 near the famous Humboldt landmark, in the La Orotava municipality. The emergency services were notified and, upon arrival, the ambulance team immediately assessed the injured man. Fortunately, it was only bruising, but he was transferred to Hospiten Bellevue in Puerto de la Cruz, where he was admitted for observation as a safeguard.

Spain’s rare rubella outbreak

HEALTH officials have reported a rare outbreak of rubella in the Aragón region of north-eastern Spain. The disease, which has affected 12 people in Zuera so far, is the region’s first scare since 2012. And Spain achieved elimination status for rubella in 2015, according to the World Health Organisation. Rubella, also called German measles, is a disease spread by the coughs and sneezes of infected people. Symptoms include rash and fever for 2-3 days. Rubella is extremely dangerous for pregnant women and their developing babies. If an expectant woman is hit by the rubella virus, her baby could have birth defects such as deafness, cataracts (blurred vision), heart defects, mental disabilities, and organ damage.

Winter sales fuelling work-contract boom THE winter sales are about to begin, and, with them, come more employment across the Canaries.

Across the Archipelago, some 3,503 work contracts are expected to be generated, according to human-resource

group Adecco. These figures are an increase of 4% more than last year, when, during the 2018 winter sales, 3,338 contracts were generated. At the beginning of 2018, contracts adding up to 1,877 were accounted for in Tenerife, while Gran Canaria capital Las

Palmas issued some 1,626. Throughout the whole of Spain this winter, the sales campaign is expected to generate 122,900 work contracts, through consumer demand. The contracts will be drawn up, mostly, in the areas of sales, promotion and customer services.

It is anticipated that this year’s figure will surpass the 214,000 who had the pleasure, two years ago. It is definitely an attraction not to be missed, and, over the last few weeks,

the Nativity Scene has welcomed at least 200 schoolchildren. While on site, the kids learn how to model the sand, as well as appreciating the great efforts made by

the sculptors, to create a supreme work of art, There is no entrance fee, although a small donation is requested because all the money received is given to the local soup kitchens.

THE fashion world is finding ways of giving that wretched plastic material a more positive spin, thanks to a handful of designers and brands. Designers are beginning to weave recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) into their latest creations. And Spain’s coastline, now the source of a healthy Mediterranean diet, also provides recycled thread. Javier Goyeneche, driven by frustration at the excessive use of the world’s natural resources, set up Ecoalf in 2009 in a bid to create a truly sustainable fashion brand. By 2015, his Upcycling the Oceans programme was plundering Spanish and Thailand’s seas for plastic waste. Since then, remarkably, around 3,000 fishermen have reeled in 250 tons of it, and, subsequently, seeing it being turned into sneakers and a range of jackets and coats, in which consumers can feel good. Meanwhile, Spanish designers Juanjo Oliva and Moisés Nieto have come up with recycled plastic collections, which have already adorned Spain’s most prestigious catwalks. Juanjo, selected by recycling pioneers Ecoembes to produce designs using

recycled PET for the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in July, delivered what he dubbed the Oliva Collection III. Nearly all the garments were cut from 100% PET fabrics, into a no-frills allweather look, in muted shades of blue and black. And, as Juanjo says, the recycled PET fabric currently available is similar to nylon.

Meanwhile, Juanjo and Moisés Nieto, another Spanish designer, have come up with recycled plastic collections, which have adorned the country’s most prestigious catwalks. “Fortunately, consumers are increasingly aware of the importance of caring for the environment,” says Nieto. “The Brands with Values study revealed that 60%

of Spaniards prefer to buy clothes which have been made with the social and environmental impact in mind.” But Spanish designer Paloma del Pozo is not as upbeat about consumer awareness. “I give talks at universities and the students end up with their mouths open,” she says. “They have no idea how much of their clothes are

made from plastic, or the volumes of polluting chemicals used in the production process. “There’s also the social aspect. So many people in the industry outsource to companies in the developing world, where child-labour is common. These are the things we don’t see.” According to Paloma, fashion is now the secondmost-contaminating industry on our planet, hard on the heels of the oil sector. “Clothes get thrown out and leak chemicals into the environment,” she stresses. “We have to buy less.” Juanjo agrees, saying: “Greater thought needs to go into our wardrobes. People have mounds of clothes that lack character and design, and all they do is fuel the consumer machine. “Marketing has drilled it into us that it is good to buy on impulse, and they’ve done a great job of turning us into sheep.” It takes between 4501,000 years for plastic to decompose, which gives it plenty of time to poison the planet’s ecosystems. And discarded clothes have become a huge part of the problem. But, on the bright side, Paloma says: “I’m convinced we’ll get to the point where plastic stops being produced. Meanwhile, I understand we have to give what we have a use.”

FRENCH adventurer Jean- Jacques Savin is already several days into his Atlantic crossing, in a specially-built orange barrel. The 71-year-old, former paratrooper has no engine, sails or paddles, and his unusual craft relies on trade winds and currents to push him 4,800kms, from his El Hierro launch to the Caribbean. Jean-Jacques, who hopes to achieve his ambition in about three months, describes his journey as a “crossing in which man isn’t captain of his ship, but a passenger of the ocean”. The adventurous old boy spent months at a shipyard, building his bright-orange, barrel-shaped capsule, which features resin-coated plywood, strong enough to withstand battering waves and other stresses. The barrel, three metres long and 2.10 metres across, has a small galley area, and a mattress with straps to keep him from being tossed out of his bunk when facing rough seas. He also has some wine on board, and other treats, with which he celebrated New Year’s Eve, and he’s kept some back for his birthday, later this month. His craft has sturdy, water-

The mattress migrants

SPANISH border officers were given a tremendous shock when they cut open two mattresses and discovered that they each had a male migrant hiding inside. A video, recorded last Sunday, shows Guardia Civil officers removing

two black-and-white mattresses from the roof of a white vehicle. The officers, based in the Spanish territory of Melilla, then sliced them open and discovered the Africans. According to Spanish media, the driver kept his wits about him and dashed from the vehicle back into Morocco. He has not yet been caught.

More migrants rescued THE Salvamento Maritimo ship rescued 72 migrants from a small boat in the Alboran Sea, at 9:25am on Wednesday. The operation was carried out by the salvage boat SAR Mastelero, and it is still in the area, along with the Sasemar 101 aircraft, following warnings that there could be more boat departures from Africa. On Tuesday, the Salvamento Maritimo also rescued 96 immigrants, travelling in two boats in the Alboran Sea and

moved them to the port of Almeria. Another boat was detected the same day, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar with 15 people. A total of 769 immigrants died last year, trying to reach Spain.

300 migrants feel at home in Spain

A BOAT carrying 300 migrants, mainly from Africa, docked in Spain last Friday after being refused entry twice into Europe. The vessel, operated by Spanish charity NGO Proactiva Open Arms, arrived in Algeciras at 9am, after a week at sea. The migrants were, initially, rescued on 21st December, but were told they could not enter Italy or Malta. The 19 different nationalities onboard, including 139 children, were met by Red Cross officials, who offered them food, clothes and medical examinations, if needed. “These are people, both children and adults, who have had really horrible experiences in both their

countries of origin and during their journey,” said Vicente Raimundo, a Save The Children director. A video showed the spirit of the migrants, who celebrated Christmas at sea by singing and listening to music. Police will identify the migrants before moving them to shelters, and, so far, the Red Cross have recorded people from the Ivory Coast, Mali, Somalia and Sudan. The Algeciras rescue came as Matteo Salvini, Italy’s far-right Interior Minister, said: “My answer is clear: Italian ports are closed, for human-traffickers and those who help them. The party is over.” Over 2,200 migrants have died this year trying to cross the Mediterranean, while 119,336 have reached Europe, according to the UN.

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has reassured British expats that their “rights” will remain unchanged, even if Britain crashes out of the European Union without a deal, on 29th March.

However, the deal is conditional on Spaniards getting the same treatment in Britain, said Sanchez, at the Prime Minister’s traditional end-of-year news conference, after telling reporters: “Their rights will be preserved, whatever the scenario.” Spain is the most popular European retirement destination for Britons, and official figures suggest it is home to about 300,000 British citizens, most of whom are settled on the coast. Among foreign nationals, they are by far the biggest users of Spain’s statefunded, universal, healthcare system. By February, said Sanchez, he would present a law outlining the rights of citizens in the respective countries, which would also lay out measures to protect bilateral, commercial relations. His words may go some

way to reassure UK citizens concerned about the future, once Britain leaves the bloc. Yet, James Green, who is financial consultancy deVere Group’s divisional manager of Western Europe, claimed Brexit uncertainty could be to blame for more British expats pondering a move back to the UK. “Since the referendum, enquiries from British expats in Spain thinking about moving back to the UK has soared by around 30%,” he said. “We’ve helped many of these people restructure their financial strategies, successfully, to mitigate the potential Brexit burden.” He added: “As Brexit nears, uncertainty and doubt begin to bite deeper, and a growing number of British expats in Spain are, reluctantly, considering moving back to the UK. “The ‘pull factors’ that attracted them to Spain in the first place, such as the more relaxed, familyorientated, more-outdoors lifestyle, the weather, great schools, and work opportunities, remain intact. “As do the ‘push factors’, such as UK’s cost of living, high taxes, low interest rates, the scrapping of some age-related benefits, quality of life, crime concerns and the weather, which encouraged them to

relocate. “This is why it’s so sad. Brexit concerns are, potentially, forcing them to give up their dream life in Spain.” Nevertheless, he advised British expats to think twice before moving back to Britain, and to consider all financial options available to them. “I would suggest that people consider all the options in the first instance, such as the bona-fide solutions which offer tax efficiency, peace of mind, and low administration issues,” he said. “In recent months, many expats, who were seriously contemplating a move back to the UK, have been able to restructure their financial planning, successfully, to capitalise on their expat status and take advantage of the tax privileges and investor-protection legislation which exists.” Meanwhile, the Iberia airline risks losing its right to operate in the EU, after the European Commission said any company falling below the 51% threshold for EU ownership would not be able to operate flights in Europe if there is a no-deal outcome. Iberia is owned by International Airline Group (IAG), which is also the parent company of British Airways.

Birthday boy killed while walking in middle of road

A BRITISH teenager died on New Year’s Day in Spain after being struck by a car on a road between Ibiza and Portinax. The boy died in the 10.30pm crash, just a day after celebrating his 14th birthday. He was said to have been carrying suitcases, and was walking in the middle of the road, with no reflective clothing on, when he was hit by a Ford Fiesta. The family, whose car struck

him, have been receiving counselling after suffering from trauma. But a Guardia Civil spokesman said: “The driver wasn’t at fault in any way, and no action will be taken against him. “The youngster was in the middle of the road at the time, wearing dark clothing with no reflective jacket. “The driver, who wasn’t able to do anything to avoid him, tested negative for drink and drugs.” It is understood that the youngster was resident in the area and was returning home after a trip to the UK.

Drug-traffickers hit by another big nightmare

A crushing blow for the crooked traders A SPECIALIST group of Torrevieja’s Local Police has begun to destroy a significant volume of counterfeit goods, confiscated during 2018. A total of 35,000 fake items, such as watches, sunglasses, CDs and DVDs, estimated to have been worth around

700,000 euros on the black market, have been crushed. Torrevieja Mayor Jose Manuel Dolon was present when the material was destroyed by heavy equipment. He said: “The subject of counterfeit goods is something we take very seriously in Torrevieja. It is something that, ultimately, affects genuine traders.”

Any items which have not been tampered with, and are lacking any official registered trademark, such as clothing and other accessories, are delivered to the Department of Social Services and Welfare. The items are then allocated and distributed to those families in the municipality who are most in need.

SPAIN’S Guardia Civil officers pulled off a perfect seasonal offering last week, courtesy of drugtrafficking gangs in two Andalucia towns, where they arrested four people. Guardia agents seized a total of 1,232 cannabis plants in Manilva and Alhaurín El Grande, adding another big tick to the fight against drugtraffickers, which also rewarded them with a further 300kg of hashish,

along with 195.5kg of cannabis. Six vehicles, two of them stolen, were among other items seized by officers over the festive period. They also commandeered precision scales, used to weigh drugs, a packaging machine, a revolver and ammunition. Altogether, UDYCO (Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime), seized over 40 tonnes of drugs in 2018. And it means that the crimefighting body has cost the illegal drug-trafficking economy a staggering 100m, by overturning the gangs responsible, with raids and arrests.

Smoking ban backfires!

Coma nan’s family berate insurers for not paying up THE British family of a grandma, now in a coma, have criticised their insurers after being made to pay almost 6,000 euros to fly her home. Patricia Reid, 61, suffered a brain haemorrhage on the last day of her holiday in Malaga, reported the Sun newspaper. Patricia, originally from Cambuslang, Scotland, was in intensive care at a local hospital, her family believing that the European

travel insurance covered the medical bills. The Scottish gran suffers from cardiomyopathy and asthma, but her insurance company, InsureandGo, claims she never mentioned the conditions and has the wrong insurance for medical cover. The firm told the family that an air ambulance back to the UK would not be covered under her plan. Her angry son, Alan, said: “They gave us an ultimatum; sign this disclaimer, or we can’t take the air ambulance to the next stage.” Alan, 32, labelled the company “complete scumbags”

and said it was “moving the goalposts”, because his mum’s conditions had been declared. The family eventually signed a form and were forced to pay out 5,882 euros to fly the sick grandma home. She is now in a lifethreatening coma, and son Alan said it would be a “miracle” if she survived. InsureandGo told The Sun: “We’re really sorry to hear about Mrs Reid. However, when we listened to the sales call, relating to her latest insurance policy, we found she didn’t declare any medical conditions.”

A BAN on smoking inside bars, restaurants and offices has, astonishingly, led to an increase in the numbers who enjoy a puff.

New figures have revealed that the volume of Spanish smokers, aged 15-64, has actually risen from 33% in 2011, when the ban came in, to 34% today. The rise in the number of smokers may be partly

explained by an increase in the number of women and young people using tobacco. Rodrigo Cordoba, the former president of the National Committee for Tobacco Prevention, said the government should address the increase urgently. “Nothing has been done in recent years. In the fight against tobacco you have to continue to introduce measures. It’s like riding a bike. If you stop pedalling, you fall over,” he said.

Everybody bowed to top people-smuggler

A VENTURE between Spanish and French police, working in conjunction with the Joint Investigation Team of Niger, has broken up a people-smuggling gang.

The probe, led by Spain’s National Police, dismantled an organisation which had sparked the migration to Spain of thousands of SubSaharans, from and through Niger, Libya, Algeria and Morocco. One of the two people arrested during the operation was considered to be one of the most important

migrant smugglers in recent years. And an analysis of the group’s bank accounts showed that its annual earnings were around 250,000 euros. Investigations began in 2017, after police learned of the existence of a shadowy person in the city of Agadez (Niger), who appeared to have great power among migrant smugglers. Initially, he was known by only his nickname, and he was the one who decided who, when and where the caravans of pick-up vehicles, used to cross the desert and transport migrants, were organised. These routes are highly dangerous, with many migrants known to have

died in sandstorms, or been stranded in the desert following breakdowns. Others have been abandoned, intentionally. Following the prosecution of several migrant-smuggling cases, particularly in the Zinder and Agadez regions, two of the main traffickers were arrested. One of them had been held by police on another occasion, charged with taking part in the moving of migrant caravans, which were abandoned in the desert. Such was the hierarchical position of those managing the caravans, no vehicle transporting them could leave Agadez without their permission.

Spanish phone boxes will still ring out…for a while SPAIN’S last Parliamentary session of 2018 should have included a decree to do away with telephone boxes. But MPs decided to keep them, for now! They were expected to scrap the law which makes it mandatory for a certain number of phone booths to be available to the public, as part of the national universal telecommunications service. Instead, the legislation change has ended the obligation for telephone directories and directoryenquiry services to be available to everyone. These two services will still be provided, but as well as not being compulsory, they will be distributed on a “business” basis only, and open to competition in the market, rather than a guaranteed public facility. The Spanish Government has decided to carry out a full analysis of how to go about a possible withdrawal of “traditional” phone services. This will be triggered within the two-year period it has been given, to incorporate the European Electronic Communications Code into State law. That means MPs have some breathing space before

making any decision about the 16,000 phone boxes, still in operation on Spain’s streets. All phone boxes, telephone directories and directoryenquiry services in Spain, reached by calling 11818, are run and managed by Telefónica. But the telephone boxes, first installed in Spain in the late 1920s, and now around 90 years old, are hardly ever used these days.

Shame in Spain lies mainly in the Bank! A SPANISH Government committee has accused the Bank of Spain of committing “a serious irregularity”, which contributed to the country’s financial crisis.

consequences included bankers receiving bonuses, despite their loss-making companies, and banks being able to post favourable financial statements, before Bankia was floated on the Stock Exchange in 2011. More than 300,000 investors bought shares for a minimum of 1,000 euros, following a major 2011 advertising campaign by Bankia, assuring customers of its profitability. But after shares dropped significantly in value the following year, the company was forced to admit it had actually made a loss of nearly three billion euros, the previous year. Spain’s Central Government later bailed Bankia out, investing more than 22bn euros to save the failing institution. In turn, the EU was then forced to intervene to save Spain’s banking sector.

A parliamentary investigation committee, looking into the Bankia case in which 300,000 investors lost money after the bank, allegedly, falsified its financial statements, said a decision by the Bank of Spain could have played a part in the fiasco. The committee claimed there were “nefarious consequences”, after the Bank of Spain allowed “Caja Madrid, Bancaja and five other savings banks not to recognise their financial losses, publicly”. The committee said the

Catalonia owes Spain an enormous 57.5bn

CATALONIA’S regional authority owes the Spanish treasury 57.5bn euros, which is four billion more than a year ago, and the highest debt of the country’s autonomous communities, according to Government data. Almost 75% of the Catalan Generalitat was borrowed from the Spanish Government’s Autonomous Liquidity Fund (ALF). The fund was created in July 2012, during the eurozone debt crisis, to help Spain’s Autonomous Communities plug gaps in their books without having to borrow from financial markets. But Cataluña’s debts to the fund grew from more

than 53bn euros on 30th September 2017, to more than 57.5bn a year later, according to the latest treasury data. The figures come as the Generalitat announced plans to begin borrowing from the Government’s Financial Facility Fund (FFF), and to cease borrowing from ALF. The authority has still requested more than 6.7bn from the ALF, yet it also plans to borrow between 8-8.5bn euros from the FFF, according to documents prepared for investors. The FFF allows regional authorities to borrow from the state, because it gives them less control over the money loaned. Pere Aragones, the Generalitat’s finance spokesperson, said the move was an important step towards getting the region’s finances in order.

Your voice, your vote! ON 26th May 2019, European Union (EU) voters and EU citizens may vote in Council (Town Hall) and European Parliament elections in Spain, if they intend to do so.

The deadline to confirm your intention to vote in Spain ends on 30th January. And, to be clear, nationals from EU countries living in Spain, and from those countries who have signed an Accord with reciprocal rights, have that right to vote. The national office has sent this information to local Town Halls: Residents of EU member states, resident here in Spain, who meet the standard requirements to vote (age, etc), have the right to participate in local and European elections, here in Spain. Although the United Kingdom has expressed its intent to leave the EU on 29th March 2019, the Electoral Census Office (ECO) has not excluded its citizens from the electoral roll for the municipal elections, as well as for the European Parliament elections. However, their inclusion will cease to have effect if the United Kingdom leaves the EU on 29th March 2019. EU nationals resident in Adeje In the coming weeks, the

Electoral Census Office will send a written notice/letter to EU citizens resident here. In general, these will be sent to EU citizens on the ‘Padrón’ (resident register), but who have not voted in the past; nor have signed the formal declaration of their desire to be on the census. The letter should include a formula, whereby people can indicate, online, their intention to vote. Alternatively, you can call into Adeje Town Hall and sign the relevant paperwork there. You can also use your NIE number to sign up online on https://sede.ine.gob.es But you will need an electronic certificate to use this method, or use the special CTT (telematics communication number that is in the letter you have received from the Census office), or you can send your signed intent to vote by post to the Census office. Just follow the letter’s instructions. Those already registered in the electoral roll, having expressed their intent to vote

in Spain, maintain their voter status and shouldn’t need to make a new declaration, until they request their removal, or cease to reside in Spain. All this is assuming you are already on the local Padrón. If not, you have until 30th January 2019 to register, both as a resident and a voter. Nationals resident in Adeje from countries with a reciprocal voting Accord If you are resident in Adeje and from a non-EU country, but one that has a reciprocal voting agreement with Spain, and you meet the standard voting requirements, you can ask to be on the census for the May 2019 local elections. Countries that have such an agreement are Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru and Trinidad and Tobago. General voting requirements The general voting requirements for all those who wish to vote are: *That you are over 18 years of age and haven’t had your official right to vote take away *That you are on the Adeje ‘Padrón’ (resident register) *That you have authorised Spanish residency *That you have lived legally in Spain for the requisite time, depending on the agreement with your country of origin. If required, a certificate can be obtained from the National Police offices.

When his new girlfriend April (Ellie White) goes into labour, Stuart quickly finds himself having to rely on his ex-wife Kate (Sam Spiro) to get her to hospital. As Stuart thinks he’s getting a handle on the situation, he is forced to deal with a sexually promiscuous father (Clive Russell), a daughter with a newly-shaved head (Sarah Hoare) and the surprise return of his errant brother (Neil Fitzmaurice), who is on the run from some very unsavoury types. And that’s before Stuart has to enlist the help of one tipsy neighbour (Geoff McGivern) to help with another neighbour (Patrick Baladi), whom he finds naked and the victim of a DIY circular saw accident.

Episode one - The Great Train Robbery. Father Brown returns for a seventh series as the fictional priest picks up his crimesolving duties. Faced with the prospect of travelling in second class Lady Felicia (Nancy Carroll) is delighted to run into opera legend Dame Bianca Norman (Cecilia Noble) who invites her and Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack) away from the riff-raff into her private pullman carriage. Also on board is Bianca’s fifth husband Piers Huntington (Matt Rawle) and adopted children Barbara (Olivia Hallinan) and Tony (Chris Lew Kum Hoi) who do not seem entirely happy with their life of luxury. After midnight the train stops and the carriage is plunged into darkness, allowing local farmers Lenny (Darryl Clark) and Daryl Cudlip (Andrew Turner) to seize Bianca’s jewels. In the scuffle Bianca is killed and the panicking brothers take Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy hostage. Roused from their beds Father Brown (Mark Williams) and Bunty (Emer Kenny) visit the scene where Inspector Mallory (Jack Deam) promises to do all he can to find Lady Felicia and Mrs McCarthy. Meanwhile the ladies manage to break free at the farm, encountering younger brother Tim Cudlip (Jack Carroll) before an angry Lenny and Daryl return. With no clues as to where his friends are and killers on the loose, can Father Brown find them before it’s too late?

Tom Kerridge’s Fresh Start BBC2, 20.00

The Johnson family from Addlestone in Surrey juggle the demands of work with busy family life, and have fallen into an all too familiar convenience food habit. Using a roll of wallpaper and the Fresh Start recipe folder, he shows Neil, a decorator, and his wife Beckie, who runs their home office, how they can plan their meals efficiently. From his kitchen Tom makes Salt Cod & Saffron Fishcakes, showing how this simple recipe can be made in advance to fit into busy lifestyles. The second thing Tom tasks the families with is to shop sensibly, buying ingredients they need for a week’s worth of home-cooked family meals. They must stick to the list and track their spending - which reveals some impressive results at the end of the week. Whilst the families put their knowledge into practice, Tom’s shows how a nutty and fruity granola is a great recipe for a store cupboard clearout, before moving on to the third rule: getting the family’s heads around batch cooking.

Death In Paradise returns for an eighth series to the idyllic Caribbean shores of Saint Marie for more ingenious and baffling murder mysteries! In the opening episode of the series, DI Jack Mooney (Ardal O’Hanlon) and the team are left baffled when passenger Paul Raynor (Andrew Tiernan) is stabbed on the express bus to Honoré. Suspicion falls upon the fellow passengers, but with no drop-off points and no-one leaving their seats, how on earth did anyone commit the murder without someone else seeing? Puzzled by a single piece of loose masking tape, Jack is determined to prove foul play. However with each of the other passengers providing an alibi for the other, and a lack of evidence, the team have a tough task on their hands. Meanwhile, Jack is on the lookout for a new recruit to join the police team, and romance is on the cards for Florence (Joséphine Jobert) with new beau, Patrice (Leemore Marrett JR).

Driver tested positive for all banned drugs

POLICE couldn’t believe their eyes when they stopped a driver at a roadside checkpoint in Ibiza.

HUNDREDS of bar owners in Spain are calling time on their businesses every year, and experts believe the oncepopular culture is under threat. The country, affectionately known as the “land of bars”, has been renowned for its independent watering holes over many years.

Since 2010, however, Spain has lost a frightening 18,269 bars, and, many believe, the trend will continue this year. Despite this, the hospitality industry as a whole has grown, with 5,000 new restaurants and hotels opening in 2017. This is good news for employment because more than 1.5 million Spaniards work in the sector. According to the

Spanish Hospitality Federation, in 2017 the number of bars dropped for the seventh year in a row, which adds up to a total of 184,430 across the country. The industry has blamed not only the recession, but, also, recent demographic changes such as a population growing old, and the rural, exodus movement. Federation SecretaryGeneral Emilio

Gallego is convinced that the changing property-market has sparked a reshuffle of city dwellers. “The new neighbourhoods attracted more people and businesses moved there, while traditional bars in areas with ageing populations shut down,” he said. Experts believe the rapid increase in company chains has also played a significant role in the decline of independent bars.

Most expensive avocados of all POLICE have seized almost 1,000 kilos of cocaine, hidden among a shipment of avocados in a warehouse in Velez- Malaga.

The bust took place after the Costa del Sol’s Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime (Udyco) discovered traffickers might have hidden the haul in a shipment, belonging to an Axarquia fruit-andvegetable company. In a sting designed to surprise the dealers, police raided a warehouse and uncovered cocaine, worth millions of euros, hidden among avocados.

Officers arrested four men for their alleged involvement in a drugtrafficking group. Two

of them were Spanish, one was Moroccan, and the other one Romanian. They were

all brought before a court and remanded in custody, pending a trial. Officers said the cocaine had entered Spain hidden in a container, which travelled through the Port of Algeciras, from a Latin American country, before being transported to a warehouse in Velez-Malaga, by road. The haul is the secondlargest to be seized in the province, and the largest bust of the year. In its present condition, the cocaine is said to have a value of around 60m euros. But police believe that once it had been mixed with other substances, it could have had a market value of more than 160m euros.

Tests proved that that he had tested positive for all banned drugs when they breathalysed him in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Immediate tests revealed that the 31-yearold man had taken a cocktail of cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, cannabis and amphetamines. Officers also recovered a mammoth drug haul from his car, including 20 pink pills, six purple, two wraps, thought to be cocaine, and a brown substance. The red-faced reveller, pulled over by cops at 3am, displayed a “reckless attitude”, apparently. He now faces a 1,000-euro fine and six points off his driving licence, as well as a possible traffic offence for being under the influence of drugs. The latter carries a prison sentence of up to six months, as well as a fine, or he could be looking at 90 days of community service, and/or having his licence revoked for four years.

Proposed law extension for victims of sex-abuse

THE Statute of Limitations for cases of physical or sexual abuse of children could be extended in Spain, following the Government’s approval of a draft just before the end of 2018. The limitations begin at 18 under current Spanish law, but if the proposed criminal code changes are upheld by parliament, they will come into action when a victim turns 30. For some time, campaigners have argued that it can take years for somebody to digest and report the abuse, which means that, in many cases, offenders cannot be prosecuted. The amendments would affect sexual crimes, physical abuse, human-trafficking and attempted murder, and would also include new online crimes, such as incitement to commit suicide, as well as sexual crimes, and even encouraging eating disorders. The Government also intends to tighten the rules, granting conditional or temporary release from prison, for offenders serving time for sexual assault against children.

‘Too-cold’ airport workers’ walkout

SOME 300 airport workers have gone on strike in Madrid because they say it is too cold, placing thousands of British tourists’ holidays in jeopardy.

As the New Year arrived on Tuesday, staff from the Eulen company insisted they would strike at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid Barajas airport until 21st January. Their walkout began exactly one month earlier, on 21st December, organised by the Alternativa Sindical Union. Its representatives alleged that security officers patrolling inside and outside the airport had not been paid their promised bonus. The workers’ group also claimed the “law of prevention of occupational hazards” was being breached, because the staff were not being

provided with warm clothes for the cold weather ahead. An agreement has still not been reached between the workers and Eulen, because, it is claimed, the company “persists in breaches” over labour and wages. But the company said the strike was “almost imperceptible”, because it had brought in extra staff to cover the shortfall. However, Eulen criticised the Pedro Sanchez Government for ruling that even during a strike, 95% of services must be covered. It comes as Spain recorded that its overseas visitor numbers dropped by 4.9% in July 2018, compared with the same period a year earlier. This decrease was the biggest in Spain for eight years, but thousands of Brits were expected to flock to the southern European country over the festive period. Britons are Spain’s largest group of holiday-makers, with nearly 19 million of them making short-term visits in 2017.

Bad-tempered driver rams boy after a row

A TEENAGER on Spain’s Costa del Sol was left in a critical condition after being rammed, deliberately, by a car on Christmas Eve. The 18-year-old Moroccan, a resident of Estepona, was walking home from a club when a car mounted the pavement and smashed into him. The driver, a 33-year-old from La Linea was arrested for attempted murder, after turning himself in at his local police station. The pair had, apparently, argued in

the Mosaic nightclub on Christmas Day, at around 7:30am. After leaving the venue, the youngster walked along Juan Carlos I Avenue, on his way home, when the driver chased him in a black VW Golf. Moments later, his car mounted the pavement, ramming his victim and then hitting a palm tree. The youngster is believed to be in a severe but stable condition at Malaga’s Carlos Haya Hospital. Although initially fleeing, the handcuffed man claimed he’d had an accident, adding: “I think I hit a person.” He was also charged with dangerous driving.

Huge staff delivery for the Post Office SPAIN’S national Post Office averted two strikes, either side of Christmas Day, by agreeing to take on 11,200 new employees, as well as improving salaries for all existing staff in 2019 and 2020.

IGIC windfall for the Brit tourists? CANARY Islands’ President Fernando Clavijo is considering dismissing the Canarian General Tax (IGIC), especially for British tourists. The aim is to make the islands a more competitive holiday destination, and Clavijo told reporters that

the tax had been refunded to Russian tourists in the past, and that it can be achieved again, with a bilateral agreement. Clavijo has argued that the UK’s departure from the European Union in March will have a huge impact on the pound and its devaluation, which is why the idea had been put on the table. The Canaries must be more competitive for the British

tourist, he said, because they are the backbone of the Islands’ tourism. Clavijo, who has taken stock of last year’s tourist figures, indicated that the overall billing figures had improved, despite a minor decrease of holiday-makers. The President added that during the final EU negotiations, the Canarian Government must stand firm in Europe, and go hand-in-hand as a society.

The State-run postal service, Correos, has struck an “unprecedented” deal with unions, which will see wages go up by at least 9%, and temporary-job contracts reduced from 35% of the workforce to just 8%. The latter is merely to cope with busy seasons, meaning all other employees will be placed on permanent contracts. This agreement will also provide pathways to promotion, and staff training, to the company’s 51,000-plus employees, and Saturday working will now become voluntary, with increased overtime payment, for those who agree to the weekend shift. Of the 11,200 new jobs, a total of 4,055 will be opened up this year, sparked by the workers’

industrial action, which took place on 30th November 30, and the strike days either side of Christmas. These were called off, finally, by the main union involved, the Labourers’ Commissions (CCOO). The Independent Central Public Sector Workers’ Union (CSI•F), says this year’s new vacancies will include 1,869 to cover those who left, or retired, in 2017, another 1,612 for those who moved on in 2018, and a further 574 to “stabilise” staff numbers. Jobs available include positions in sorting, delivery and customer service. But, like all public-sector roles, they will be dependent upon passing civil-service exams, known as oposiciones, which are normally taken in regional languages where these exist, or in Spanish in those regions which do not have co-official tongues.

A dark day for Phoney priest collared! motorcyclists A FAKE priest, who was never ordained, has been dismissed from the Catholic Church in Spain, after spending 18 years carrying out weddings and taking confessions.

Miguel Angel Ibarra was, reportedly, found to be an imposter after a complaint was filed in his native country of Colombia, alleging that he had forged his documents. A “thorough investigation” was carried out, and it was discovered that he had never been ordained. Ibarra, who moved to the MedinaSidonia town last October, has since been ordered to return to Colombia. A spokesperson for the local diocese told British press that events such as this could “overshadow the work of parishioners and ordained priests, who serve the church every day in an exemplary way”.

THE weekend between Christmas and the New Year was a dark time for bikers across the archipelago.

The Church confirmed weddings and baptisms will still be recognised,

but not the communions or confessions that Ibarra heard.

A total of 12 were injured on roads across the Canary Islands between the Saturday morning and Sunday evening. From the reported accidents, five were registered in Tenerife, two in Gran Canaria, one in Fuerteventura with the remaining four being registered in La Gomera. The chain of crashes began on Saturday afternoon in Arafo, in the north-east of Tenerife, when two motorbikes crashed into each

other. One of the bikers; a 33-year-old man, actually tumbled into a ravine. Although the accident was considered serious, both parties were, fortunately, not injured badly. A second crash was reported that day, in Gran Canaria on the GC-60 in San Bartolome de Tirajana, where a 28-year-old biker collided with a car. And on the Sunday, several more motorbike accidents and incidents were registered with the Canarian Emergency Services, totalling 12 in just over 24 hours. Happily, no deaths were registered over the weekend, although one victim was reported to be injured seriously.

SPAIN’S traffic authority (DGT) officially dropped speed limits on secondary roads to 90km/hr this week. It had considered reducing the 100km/hr limit on main, non-motorway, inter-urban highways, most of which are single-carriageway only, in line with other European countries. These include Portugal, Italy, Belgium, Greece and Croatia, which are now at 90km/hr, and France, where the top speed is restricted to 80km/hr. Officials introduced the change in law to come into effect on Wednesday (2nd Jan). The vast majority of road crashes (77%) involving deaths are on secondary, single-carriageway highways, mostly through vehicles veering off the

edge, or being driven too fast. According to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), led by Pere Navarro, and to Interior Minister Fernando

Grande-Marlaska, a 30day stay of action will be given for speed-limit signs to be changed using giant stickers. The method was employed

in 2011, when motorway speeds dropped briefly from 120km/hr to 110, in response to a spike in fuel costs. A new guide to changes in speed limits reveals that non-motorway dual carriageways will remain at 100km/hr for motorbikes and cars, while singlecarriageway highways will drop to 90, and, on both, lorries, buses, coaches and vans must not exceed 80km/ hr. Breaking the 90-kilometre limit will be subject to a fine, normally 100 euros, reduced by 50% if paid early. But if the speed measured exceeds 110km/hr, the fine rises to 300 euros, and

means that two points will be deducted from the driver’s licence. Mobile-phone use at the wheel, which includes simply holding the phone in your hand, will soon attract a six-point loss, as opposed to the current three. And the three-point deduction for not wearing a seatbelt in a car, or helmet on a motorbike, or children not travelling with the required booster seats or restraints, will now rise to four points. But though the changes came into force on Wednesday, it may take longer for some road signs to be altered.

TWO people were injured on the TF-1 on Tuesday night after a motorist drove against the traffic flow, causing a head-on collision at Adeje’s exit 79. The accident happened just before 11pm, and the emergency ambulance arrived rapidly to attend to the injured parties. Fortunately, neither person was injured badly, but they were both taken to hospital for further examination. In fact, sources said the collision could have been much more serious, and that the victims were fortunate to escape with minor injuries. The wrong-way driver was arrested by the Guardia Civil and is facing charges for road-safety offences.

Firefighters save cars from blazing garage SAN Miguel firefighters extinguished a blaze on Tuesday at a ground-floor garage of an apartment block in Calle Llano Navajas, in Charco del Pino, Granadilla. They were requested by the property owner, who called the Emergency Services after seeing black smoke seeping out from his garage door. The garage contained various parked vehicles, as well as several flammable objects. But the fire-fighters made the area as secure as possible before tackling the flames. Once the blaze was extinguished, they ventilated the premises, together with the Local Police, who were working alongside them.

fewer than in 2017.

The National Drowning Report (INA), prepared by the Royal Spanish Salvage and Lifeguard Federati, attributes the 22% reduction “to the delay in the use of Spanish beaches as a result of the bad weather, which lasted during the first months of the year, including the Easter holidays”. Last year’s death-bydrowning rate was the lowest since the Spanish Royal Salvage and Lifeguard Federation began performing the INA in 2015. The most deaths, 481, occurred in 2017, followed by 2016 (437) and 2015, which suffered 415 fatal incidents. When broken down, the figures show that, last year, there were 55 drownings in the Canary Islands, which represented 14.8% of the total. In Andalusia, 52 people drowned, followed by

Galicia, where there were 49 deaths, the Balearic Islands 42, Catalonia 41, Valencia community 37, Castilla y Leon and Pais Vasco, 14 in both, the Region of Murcia 12, and Asturias 11. Nine people drowned in Cantabria and Aragon, eight in Castilla-La Mancha and the Community of Madrid, four in Navarra,

two in Ceuta, Extremadura and La Rioja, as well as one person in Melilla waters. According to the report, the most deaths occurred in August, with 65 registered. Together with the 60 fatalities in July and 52 in September, the summer months saw 47.6% of the total number of drownings. The fewest tragedies were

recorded in February, with seven. The Spanish Royal Salvage and Lifeguard Federation released a profile of those who lost their lives in aquatic spaces. It shows that 77% were male, 75% of Spanish nationality, 65.9% were over the age of 45, while 44% died on Spanish beaches.

Holiday mum dies in a head-on crash

A BRITISH woman was killed in a car crash, just hours into her New Year holiday, while her partner is in a coma, and her daughter is seriously injured. The mum, believed to be from Bedfordshire and in her sixties, died as she was driven along a Costa Blanca road known as

“death alley”. The tragedy occurred on New Year’s morning, when the family vehicle was involved in a head-on crash with another car, on the N332 at Santa Pola. This stretch of road, notorious for accidents, is just a 12-minute drive from Alicante airport, where the family had touched down. The woman’s daughter was thought to have been driving the vehi-

cle before the crash, which also injured three others. The Emergency Services launched a helicopter, with ambulances and the police being scrambled to the scene to cut four people from the wreckage. But, tragically, the woman had already passed away. Survivors were taken to Alicante’s Vinalopó General Hospital, as well as the Elche General Hospital.

Poor camels are freed from car-park ‘stable’

Man held for murdering two female backpackers

MOROCCAN authorities have detained a SwissSpanish national in connection with the brutal killing of two Scandinavian backpackers. SPAIN’S Animalist party has helped release camels, kept in “abusive” conditions, from an Andalucian car park. Leading animal-rights party PACMA complained bitterly about the Christmas camel rides in Ecija, Seville, after images circulated online featured them locked in a cage. The bizarre footage shows

three camels in the multistorey lot of a shopping centre, fenced into a couple of parking spaces with a thin layer of straw. The party described the camel enclosure “abusive”, and a spokesperson said: “They can feel fear, anguish, pain etc. We believe it is necessary for the head of the centre to understand, in case it is not already clear, that the animals are sentient beings.” The shopping mall sus-

pended the Christmas camel rides after pressure from PACMA, which had contacted Seville City Council to ensure the rides were banned. “The commercial centre does not have any scruples in attracting the clients with measures of animal abuse,” added the spokesperson. “They keep the animals in garages, where they have to lie down on the concrete, and without water.”

Norwegian Maren Ueland, 28, and 24-year-old Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, from Denmark, were slaughtered while camping in the Atlas Mountains. Counter-terrorism officers in the north African country claim the arrested man taught social-media and archery skills to some other suspects arrested in connection with the killings. The individual is also believed to have been recruiting Moroccans for “terrorist schemes”, aimed

at “foreign interests and security forces”. The women’s bodies were found on 17th December, and police believe the killers are affiliated to Islamic State (IS). So far, 20 men have been arrested during the investigation into the killing, which took place near to the tourist village of Imlil. Four of those men arrested are main suspects, all of whom pledged allegiance to IS just three days before the double killing occurred. Hundreds from Maren’s hometown of Bryne held a candlelit vigil for her last week, including many family and friends. “We want to show that we care about each other, and that we are together for a kinder world,” said Odd Ivar Nese, one of those who organised the event.

Cheers! I’m just popping down to get a drink, dear!

AN amazing underwater winery at El Poris de Abona offers an exclusive experience for wine lovers, at around 18 metres deep. And Roberto Gonzalez, head of Bodega Submarina, is certain that this is the first time underwater winetasting has been carried out, anywhere in the world, The idea comes from a Tenerife-based company, in Poris, and, after sampling the wine, the divers are invited to indulge in various cheeses from Arico.

The Platform (methacrylate bell) where the tasting takes place, can accommodate up to eight people, and the experience comprises two parts: the first is the tasting, from a selection of wines embracing 11 wineries, which have been matured at 18 metres deep. The second part is then to have lunch at the Bodegas Monje, in El Sauzel. This consists of more winetasting, comparing those which have been matured over three months, underwater, with those maturing in the more traditional way! González, who be-

lieves the experience is a must for those tourists who enjoy a dive or two, said: “We are able to enjoy this experience, thanks to the tools from professional diving, which we can now use for recreational diving. “They offer the customer a unique experience of being 18 metres under water, while able to remove the regulator as well as the mask, and appreciating the environment, tasting wine and eating cheese.” The Tenerife underwater winery is the first permanent installation of its kind, used specifically for maturing wine.

The concrete-andsteel structure houses several cellars inside, with an initial capacity of 5,000 bottles. And the premises are secure because the contents are locked behind a steel door. Although other experiences relating to the ageing of wines on the ocean floor have already taken place in the Canary Islands, none offers the safety and guarantees of Bodega Submarina de Canarias. Obviously, the winetasters must have some basic diving experience, as well as a love of wine, to enjoy this activity!

‘Zero’ food and drink not always sugar-free

CONSUMER organisation OCU has warned that food and soft drinks branded “zero” are not necessarily sugar-free. There is no law to say that manufacturers and brand designers are obliged to guarantee products labelled “zero” do not contain sugar, even though the average shopper would assume this to be the case, automatically. In many cases, “zero” is merely an advertising message and is not linked to the nutritional content, reveals the OCU. To guarantee food or drink is low in sugar, fat, salt or similar elements, consumers should look out for the words sin (“without”), bajo contenido (“low content”), bajo valor (“low amount”), or valor reducido en (“reduced”). None of these terms can be used as mere publicity claims, and must, by law, be followed through in the ingredients used. The OCU says manufacturers “should not be allowed” to use labels in a type which is four or five times

larger for the nature and quality of a product, and then use much smaller print to explain the content, when the advertising label leads the customer to believe this is something different. So, calling a product “zero” in large letters, then, in small words, referring to the true sugar, fat or salt content, is deemed to be misleading. Another trick is to use different colours for each of these texts, with the “misleading” label in a brighter shade to draw attention to it. In an attempt to stamp out advertising which is deceptive, but not illegal, and to ensure consumers know what they are buying, the OCU has set up the Twitter hashtag #NoCuela (“Don’t fall for it”), enabling it to clarify ambiguous or false information concerning all types of products. Consumers themselves can join in by sending the OCU details of any misleading or confusing packaging information, so that it can be investigated, either by using the hashtag or emailing the organisation on nocuela@ocu.org.

Premier Properties embrace kids’ football ONE of the leading international estate agents in Los Cristianos, Premier Properties, have, recently, done a major sponsorship promotion with one of the leading under-8s junior football teams in South Wales, Sully FC. Sully Sports Football Club gives local boys and girls, between the ages of 6-18, the opportunity to train and play football, along with the chance to enjoy and experience friendly, competitive, league and cup matches. The club has an excellent record of success in cup and league competitions, but their main purpose and aspiration is to see the youngsters enjoy playing football in a safe, friendly and managed environment. The first mini, junior and youth sides were formed in the village in 1972. Since then, they have grown

steadily, and now Sully Sports FC currently have 20 teams training and playing football with them - the largest junior and mini football sections in the Vale of Glamorgan. Sully Sports FC have 10 mini boys’ teams, nine junior boys’ teams and two girls’ teams (an Under-10 and an Under-12, both in the South Wales Girls League). The Under 13’s squad achieved the double, winning both the Vale of Glamorgan Under-13’s Football League 1, and the

Vale of Glamorgan Under13’s cup. The team went eight games unbeaten, at the prestigious Selsey Whitsun Football Festival. We organise a mini football festival every year at the end of the season. Our festival of football is for boys Under-7’s to Under11’s, and girls Under-10’s and Under-12’s, and is held at our playing field in Sully, in June. The family fun day has inflatables, stalls, face painting and football-related activities and tournaments. There

are also hot and cold refreshments throughout the day, so make a note in your diary. Sully Sports Club has excellent football amenities which include five senior football pitches, three mini pitches and an Astroturf area for training, with changing rooms thought by some as being the best in the Vale of Glamorgan. The club also has excellent social facilities, with its own club house and regular events, organised by our team of dedicated volunteers, coaches and

managers. Many of the senior football players have come through our various youth teams, and then established themselves in either/both the first and/or second team. With both squads doing extremely well in the leagues and competitions they take part in, it proves our youth development policy really works, and is a huge success. Our various junior football teams have thrived over the last few years. The commitment, passion and hard work of local volunteers, coaches and managers, plus a smashing group of parents, has played a major part in this success. Asked why, Paul said: “It’s part of giving something back to the area where we are from, and helps encourage the youth to take part. Our sponsorship will help them get new kits, which, in turn, will help with the team building etc.” For more information on Sully FC, visit or contact Premier Properties on 922 750 603.

The key to

healthy resolutions By Val Sainsbury In theory, New Year’s resolutions are a great idea, but most of us can only stick to them for a few days, at most! The problem is that many are unrealistic and poorly executed. Most involve inspiration, but no preparation. For long-term success, a detailed and sustainable action plan is key. Change your health outlook Instead of seeing it as all-ornothing, look at health as a continuum. Every decision made moves us closer to one end of the continuum, either good health or poor health. For example, a fizzy drink would move us in the wrong direction, while drinking a glass of water would do the opposite. By making small, positive decisions, we move closer and closer to good health. Integrate exercise For most people, exercise is an add-on, something they do if they can find time. It’s much easier to accommodate if you find ways to incorporate activity into your daily routine. For example, climbing the stairs to the third floor takes just a minute longer than waiting for the lift. This also goes for the office. Using a smaller water glass and implementing “email-free Fridays”, where you walk messages to colleagues as opposed to sending them, can boost your step count, and help you lose weight more quickly. When we find reasons to stay active throughout the day, we can afford to miss an exercise session every now and then. Regular self-care Many of us get so wrapped up in our busy day-to-day schedule that we forget to pause and give ourselves a break. One easy way to squeeze in self-care is to set aside 10 minutes for yourself every morning, before you reach for your phone and start checking emails. Lie in bed and take note of things you’re grateful for, put your phone on “do not disturb” until you’ve finished your morning workout, and read for pleasure while enjoying your morning coffee. Starting the day with a dose of solitude sets the

tone for your entire day, and makes for a much-calmer year. Say goodbye to fad diets Losing weight is a staple resolution, which could explain why so many diets fail. It’s fine to have weight loss as a goal, but instead of following the latest diet craze, focus your efforts on eating healthily. Though that’s not to say fad diets get everything wrong. Steering clear of empty calories and loading up on whole food and healthy fats are steps in the right weightloss direction. Head back to the kitchen Kitchens are getting fancier and fancier, yet fewer and fewer people are actually using them. The beauty of resolving to do more of your own cooking is that you gain more control over the nutritional quality of your meals. Prepare your own food from fresh ingredients. You will save calories and money, and you will be healthier for it.

Your favourite foods Completely cutting

out

certain foods, especially those you’re particularly fond of, is setting yourself up for failure. When someone takes an all-or-nothing approach to bettering their eating habits, the likely result will be bingeing on the restricted food in the near future, followed by feelings of guilt or shame. Focus on incorporating more healthy, nutrient-rich foods into your diet, while still allowing yourself the occasional treat, so you never feel deprived. Unplug daily Thanks to modern electronics, we’re switched on and tuned in 24/7, and more stressed than ever. A growing body of research finds that media overload can increase

your risk of depression, social anxiety, job burnout, and even allergies. The solution? Spend an hour, 10 hours, or a full day without your mobile, computer or games. Start a food journal A crucial step to changing unhealthy food habits is simply being aware of what you’re consuming on a daily basis. Write down your goals and what you’re eating; food journals are eye-opening to what you are actually eating and drinking. A study showed that keeping a food diary doubled a person’s weight loss. If you’re trying to slim down, keeping a personal account of your meals and snacks is an excellent first step. Declutter Another way to reduce your stress levels (and boost your mood) is to work on clearing out the clutter in your home. Living in the midst of clutter saps your energy. Clean up your mess, and it will open up your life for more positive energy. Find a gym buddy Look for a New Year’s resolution buddy who can make you accountable for meeting your goals. Whether it’s a colleague, best friend or family member, having an accountability partner who can either accompany you on your workouts, or even just be there to encourage you when you feel like giving up, is crucial. A study found that more than 70% of participants successfully completed their goals, when sending weekly progress reports to a friend.

Four couples spent the weekend at the Millersville County Fair. It’s one of the largest fairs in the area and is very well attended. A true country fair with all of the animals, food and competitions, the Millersville Country fair also encompasses craft shoe and home show vendors, live music every night, and many other attractions. Of course, the food is a big draw and each couple went home groaning over how much they’d eaten during the day. Each couple loved one particular fair food and strangely enough, each couple loved the same food. Determine the full name of each couple, which animal was their favourite, and which food was each couple’s favourite. 1. Emmett Wright wasn’t married to Michelle. The Bradley couple loved corn dogs. 2. Mr. and Mrs Parker didn’t like horse. Linda liked fried dough but not the sheep. 3. The couple who liked the chickens also love mini donuts. 4. Ryan wasn’t married to Linda but he and his wife liked the horses. 5. Betty Ridge didn’t like kettle corn. Alan wasn’t married to Michelle. 6. The cows weren’t the favourite animals of Jake and his wife, Sue.
