Make Carnival your safari

Cont. from Front

It symbolises the wilderness of the jungle at night, and is the first step towards one of the most anticipated events of the municipality, which, last year, attracted over 125,000 people during a 10-day period, which was a record attendance figure, generating an economic

impact in the area of more than 6.1m euros. This year, Arona begins its “safari through the jungle” on Thursday, 21st March, among snakes, zebras, giraffes, lions and other wild animals, which make the forest a dream full of strange creatures and vegetation. Nareme Mellián, Illustrator and Bachelor of Fine Arts,

captured, perfectly, the splendour of this scenic wonder with a take on a new illusion, with the charm of butterfly-shaped masks, which hide faces… until the magic of the carnival. “A dance of colours that connects our most primal essence, these animals are represented, from day to night, unmasking this spring

and festive dance,” said the designer. Nareme Mellián is a born artist, specialising in Drawing and Illustration at the University of La Laguna. He also works as Art Director and Concept Art for the animation studio Animada House. Among his most notable projects include the Cleo series, which airs on TV Canaria, Spain Clan TV and HBO. He was responsible for producing the artwork for the XXII edition of the International Festival of Cuentos de Los Silos 2017, as well as the 2018 May Festival in Los Realejos. In addition, he has won poster contests for Arrecife Carnival and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Arona Mayor, José Julián Mena, and Councillor Pura Fiestas Martin, were the first to see the artwork, which opens the International Carnival of Los Cristianos, being staged between 21st March and 1st April, with the main parade on Saturday, 23rd. The election of the Gala Queen will be held on Thursday 28th; the Gala Drag Queen election on Friday

29th; main Carnival day on Saturday 30th, and Coso Apotheosis on 31st March, ending on 1st April with the traditional Burial of the Sardine. Mayor Mena, stressed: “The International Carnival of Los Cristianos has become a reference point for both tourists and residents. “Many visitors set this date in their calendar to visit the island, so we will continue having these types of event, which add economic development for Arona, and encourage local trade.” As for the poster, Mena said: “The image reflects the colourful carnival, representing perfectly the theme of 2019, when Arona will become a colourful jungle, where we expect everyone to enjoy themselves.” Councillor Martin added: “This year, we will also have many surprises that will ensure the fun of our International Carnival of Los Cristianos. More people are participating in the event, and its record attendance last year places it as the second-most-attended carnival on the island, and highest in the south.”

Game of Thrones points at Canaries PARTS of the final outing for Game of Thrones will be shot in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma this Spring, according to a newspaper.

It will then return to the Titantic Studios in Northern Ireland in the Autumn, which has been a long-time base for the series. “We will be shooting on location there throughout the spring,” an industry source told the Belfast Telegraph. “After that, we will be coming back to Belfast for production work in the Paint Hall.” Most of the show’s interior sets for Game of Thrones are kept at the Paint Hall. And, for Season 8, the crew are even building a huge replica

of King’s Landing in the lot outside. Filming in Belfast makes lots of sense, because HBO has already laid a lot of infrastructure in the area, and the local authorities are happy the network is sticking around. The choice to shoot in the Canary Islands is interesting, because HBO filmed a lot of Game of Thrones on the Spanish mainland, including scenes in Meereen, King’s Landing, Braavos, Dorne and the famous Loot Train Attack. The company is believed to have scouted the Canaries in advance of Season 7, and, back then, film HBO would have received a 35% tax break for shooting on Tenerife (as opposed to 15% for filming on mainland Spain).

Clampdown on Graffiti vandals in National Park

Five injured in crash with bus FIVE people were injured after their vehicle was involved in a traffic accident with a bus on Monday night, at around 10.20.

It happened on the northbound TF-1 at junction 67, just inside the Arona municipality. The Emergency Services sent an ambulance to the scene, where medics began to attend to the injured parties immediately. They started with a 23-yearold woman, who was suffering considerable abdominal pain. They then turned to another woman, aged 33, who

TENERIFE Cabildo is cracking down on graffiti hooligans, who are having a field day in Teide’s National Park. Guardia Civil officials have received a detailed report of the graffiti, which involves several pictures, as well as scribbles, found by visiting walkers, and those who mountain-climb around Las

Cañadas, and along the Alto de Guajara routes. The Guardia will apply sanctions to the “artists”, because it is considered to be an ecological attack within a World Heritage Site. The Canarian Government has already made it clear that hooligans, defacing any natural landmarks or buildings inside the park, could face fines of up to 600 euros, as well as paying the restoration costs.

THE arrival of another group of people, carrying false IDs and trying to board a flight to Ireland, must have perplexed National Police at Fuerteventura Airport. The trio, from Georgia, said they were from Lithuania, which continued the trend because another party of three, arrested before Christmas at the same airport, were Albanians, travelling on false Lithuanian

complained of severe back pain. Together, they were taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment and observation. The medical team also

attended to two other women and a man. All had various types of back injuries, and were taken to Adeje’s Quiron Hospital for treatment and observation.

Another dodgy group for Ireland is airport mystery passports, and also heading for Ireland. The latest incident happened when the trio booked a flight for Dublin. They were stopped at the security check by staff, who informed the National Police of their suspicions.

When police questioned the three individuals further, it came to light that they were actually from Georgia. None of them has a police record, and officials are investigating why the trio were travelling on false documentation.

Arona opens the first crematorium in South ARONA Mayor José Julián Mena, and Mémora Group chief Juan José Domínguez, have inaugurated the first complete and homologated crematorium in the South of the island, located in Cho-Parque La Reina. The new facility, comprising more than 1,000sq/m, with a private investment in excess of one million euros by the Mémora Group, has four wake rooms, a chapel,

and a crematorium. And it will save dozens of families from having to travel to the North of the island when they opt for cremation, as was the case until now.

Mayor Mena congratulated the Mémora Group for the initiative, but pointed out: “Despite being an authentic metropolitan area, the South of Tenerife continues to

‘Loved ones’ led to to arrest of fugitive

FUGITIVE Joe Lindsay, believed to be part of an international drug-trafficking gang, was arrested in Tenerife after police discovered that the Scot’s “loved ones” had booked flights to spend the New Year with him.

Spanish newspapers reported that police officers pounced on the 34-year-old, as he made his way to Tenerife South Airport to meet family members off their plane. Police had, apparently, taken months to track him down because he shunned the expat community and bought nothing in his own name. But the married father of three was held near the airport, and cops

revealed that he was said to have links with a violent gang. Lindsay, from Castlemilk, Glasgow, who has been charged with various crimes, is alleged to have been part of a gang operating in countries spanning Europe, Asia and North America. A police spokesman said: “Authorities in Edinburgh were looking for the man in connection with alleged participation in illegal activities, performed by a leading international criminal organisation. “He is accused of 29 offences, ranging from membership of a criminal organisation, drugs and weaponstrafficking, money-laundering, computer crime, homicide and assault, kidnapping and taking hostages, as well as armed robbery.

a fundamental service. “It means they won’t have to travel to Santa Cruz or La Laguna, when there are situations as delicate as the death of a loved one.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Off-duty police officer Police capture Mafia Mr Big

A WANTED criminal, thought to be the No2 in a branch of the Italian Mafia, was arrested by National Police in Gran Canaria on 1st January, posing as a shop employee in Morgan’s tourist area. Italian authorities have even issued an international, judicial report of the 40-year-old’s extensive police record, along with his crimes. His history of dangerous, criminal activities, as well as a close relationship with his Mafia gang, led to special police devices being installed to make the arrest. The thug has been placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authorities.

Missing Brit’s blazing boat

THE hunt for a missing British pensioner, feared dead after his boat burst into flames off the Lanzarote coast, resumed last Monday. Emergency service crews found no trace of the 68-yearold, after his little fishing boat caught fire, calling off their first day’s search as darkness fell. His partner told police that the unnamed Brit, living on Lanzarote, was alone when he left the upmarket Marina Rubicon port in Playa Blanca, at around 7.30am last Friday. A wallet with his ID inside was found floating near the wreckage of his motorboat, after the blaze had been put out. The vessel has now been towed back to port, to enable investigators to try to piece together what happened.

Pope backs stranded migrants

POPE Francis appealed to European leaders last Sunday to give concrete solidarity to 49 migrants, stranded aboard a pair of rescue vessels. The Pope, addressing the congregation in St Peter’s Square, noted that the migrants, rescued in the Mediterranean Sea, had been waiting days to be allowed a safe port to let them disembark. Italy’s populist government has refused to let private-aid vessels disembark migrants in Italian ports. And while Malta will not tolerate the landing of migrants, it has, reportedly, allowed the two boats to enter its waters for fresh supplies.

AN off-duty National Police officer has detained a 41-yearold man in Las Palmas, who was holding a woman by the neck, and punched her in the face.

The incident took place in the Paseo de Las Canteras, the beach-front promenade, in the Gran Canaria capital, when the officer was out walking with his family.

He heard a noise and saw the disturbance, as the woman, trying to get away from the man, was calling out to pedestrians to help her. The officer identified himself, immediately, and restrained the aggressor, releasing the woman from his grip in the process. A National Police patrol was called to the scene and arrested the man, who has an existing criminal record for domestic violence, as well as a breach of

an existing sentence. He also has a restraining order against him from the woman he was attacking, who, it turns out, is his expartner, issued by a court in the capital. Officers immediately activated the protocol of assistance and protection for the victim. She was taken away to have her injuries assessed, and to make statements of the incident. Her attacker was transferred by the police to holding cells, awaiting trial.

services at around 5.20 on Wednesday afternoon, and an ambulance and the fire services were sent to the area. On arrival, the firemen, helped by the coast-guard, rescued the person from his precarious position. He was then carried to

the ambulance, where the medical team assessed him. The man had suffered a considerable blow to the head, as well as other injuries to his body. But once stabilised, he was taken to hospital for further treatment and observation.

Child-porn man arrested

THE National Police last week arrested a 70-year-old British man, at Santa Catalina port in Las Palmas, charged with child pornography. An extradition order had been served on him by a judge in San Javier, Murcia, and he was subject to court proceedings. The Canarian Police Department chief reported that they had just arrested the Briton as he went through a passenger check, while disembarking a cruise ship at Gran Canaria port. He was handed over to the judicial authority, along with the corresponding police report.

PEDRO Duque, the Spanish Government’s astronaut-turnedScience Minister, has worn his space suit in public again for the first time since 2003, when he went on his last mission into orbit.

Snr Duque was visited in his offices by a group of children for a question-andanswer session. And, surprise, surprise, nearly every one of their queries was about his life as an astronaut, rather than his current role as head of universities and scientific research. He wore his all-in-one European Space Agency (ESA) outfit and posed with a laser-beam, which thrilled the kids. And he also answered their questions patiently, with plenty of humour, said the adults accompanying the kids. Pedro is known for being quiet and reserved, always preferring a behind-thescenes role, rather than being in the limelight. But he was said to be extremely relaxed with the little ones, and clearly enjoying himself. His two trips to the International Space Station meant he was able to give clear explanations about what it felt like to be in zero gravity, how much fuel was used on a space voyage, and what his feelings were when he saw the Earth from the outside. He told the packed room of children: “Seeing Earth from 220km above is really amazing. You see the sun rise every hour-and-a-half. But it’s

at its most beautiful at night, when you can see, perfectly, all the lights of the cities, and thunder storms. It’s stunning.” Snr Duque also confirmed the popular claim that the province of Almería’s mammoth, tomato-growing greenhouses can be seen from outer space. “There’s nothing so big, made by humans, that you can see so well from up there,” the astronaut-minister told the children. “And being in zero gravity is a sensation like being in freefall.” He added: “It’s a lot like

being in a lift with the cables cut… for the first few minutes, it’s frightening, but then you get used to it.” But he admitted: “Before newcomers get used to it, they start off becoming very disoriented. Many get dizzy and even throw up, although they soon get comfortable again. “You learn to move about, and, after a few bumps at the start, you even forget how to walk.” Several children asked how they could become a spaceman or spacewoman,

and Pedro assured them it did not involve any totallyunique talents. Just by taking a degree in one or more sciences at university, being able to speak English fluently, and, if possible, a third language, are all the qualifications one needs to become an astronaut, said the minister. “There are people of lots of nationalities at the International Space Station, so the more languages you can speak and understand, the better,” he stressed.

“But the most important thing is to be very, very curious, and to have a great team spirit, because there’s no room on a spaceship for churlish, boorish people.” Asked whether he was likely to go into space again, the minister said the most likely manned mission to take place next would be to Mars, which he would “love to join”. But he feels he might now be “too old”. He admitted: “The spaceships which will go to Mars haven’t been invented yet, so I think it’s more likely it’ll be you who goes rather than me, because we’ve still got a few years yet before we step onto the red planet.” After the session, which ended with numerous photos with the youngsters, Pedro said he had found it all “very exciting” and added: “It’s much nicer talking about things which inspire children, than about other things.” But, he said with a smile: “Although it’s hard going into space, and it takes about six years to prepare for it, it’s harder still being a minister, because it happens overnight, so that’s a bit more difficult!”

Teenager cashes in with whopping lottery bonus ROMANIAN teenager Cosmin Rotariu, 15, who has made his fortune in Spain’s Sorteo del Niño Lottery, is 200,000 euros better off after claiming his winning ticket, No. 37142.

The youngster said outside the Lottery shop in the Gracia district of Barcelona: “I did not expect this, and I am trembling. I do not know what I’m going to do with the money… I have no idea!” Cosmin, pictured, arrived in Barcelona with his parents 10 years ago, and, although minors are prohibited from buying Lottery tickets, there was an exception in this instance. The youngster’s family had been given a refund on their Christmas Lottery ticket last

month, so the boy and his father went to the shop to exchange the El Gordo ticket for an El Niño one. “Cosmin and I wanted a number that resembled my wife’s date of birth, and we chose that one at the window because it had several equal numbers,” said the boy’s father, Valeriu Rotariu. Cosmin added: “Maybe I’ll buy a new phone, or invest in a small apartment. I have not thought about it, but I’ll definitely buy some things for my parents.” Despite his win, however, he cannot collect it personally, because it must be paid to an adult. Meanwhile, a British pensioner, who does not speak Spanish, found out, almost by accident, that he had won 75,000 euros in the same lottery, which was drawn last Sunday. Gary, in his late sixties and living in the southern Alicante

province of Benijófar, was waiting patiently in the queue to find out if his latest lottery ticket had won anything, as he often did. But he began spotting the 61,776 number on several posters, and shop-owner Inmaculada Giménez Ortega said: “He went yellow, then white… then nearly fainted!

He didn’t know when the draw was, and had no idea whether he’d won anything.” To help him out, Inmaculada took Gary to Banco Sabadell, his nearest bank. Once there, she left him with the woman in charge, who speaks fluent English, so she could explain it all to him.

Benijófar’s nearest lottery shop in the town has sold winning tickets before, and Gary was more than happy to join the list. Exactly one year ago, in the last El Niño draw, Inmaculada sold a full ticket, or 10 décimos, which won the second prize of 750,000 euros.

Thousands to celebrate the San Sebastian feast ADEJE Council is preparing to celebrate one of its most popular fiestas, San Sebastián, which attracts thousands of people from the municipality and the rest of the island, all congregating at La Caleta’s La Emramda beach zone.

This is also one of the oldest fiestas, with celebrations dating back over five centuries. The 2019 main event takes place next Sunday (20th Jan), and those who wish to take part as riders with their mounts (horses, camels, donkeys etc) must register at Adeje Cultural Centre, between 8am-3pm, weekdays, by Friday, 18th January, and must have their own animal’s registration papers and civic insurance, along with the relevant vaccination documents. Celebrations begin next Saturday (19th Jan) at 8pm, with Holy Mass sung by the Boleros de Armeñime group, in honour of San Sebastián de Mártir. The service is followed by a procession with the statue of San Sebastián, accompanied by the Adeje municipal band. Then, at 10pm, the San Sebastián folklore festival takes place with La Diata, the Asociación Cultural Imoque and the Adeje Folklore Group. Sundays’events begin at 12 noon with Holy Mass, sung by the Santa Úrsula parish choir, followed by the procession, the statue of San Sebastián being carried along the customary route to the sea, accompanied by horses and riders. Other animals are also present in front of the church for the

public to view, from sheep to goats, and oxen. And people also bring their pets along for the traditional blessing of animals, which takes place after the parade. Over the weekend, the public can also enjoy an open-air exhibition, ‘San Sebastián, a tradition’ with photographs from the municipal archive. There will also be performances from local singing and dance groups, as well as stalls selling Canarian produce, and food and drink. The security plan for this year’s festival includes the presence of a qualified veterinarian, to guarantee the well-being of the animals present, and determine their fitness to participate in the parade. Festival origins The San Sebastián festival has been celebrated in Adeje, and the rest of the island, since the beginning of the 18th century.

He is one of the borough’s patron saints, and someone to whom many Adeje people have prayed for “favours” or assistance, today as in the past. These days, the fiesta has become a hugely-popular tradition, which goes beyond its religious significance, and has contributed greatly to the continued social harmony of the many international people living in the borough. Adeje’s statue of San Sebastián, which normally resides in the hermitage in front of the church, was created in the Bririllo de Valencia workshop and brought to Adeje in 1916. It was mentioned in an article, published in the Gaceta de Tenerife on 29th January of that year. It has a classical aspect, smaller than life-size, and is made from carved wood and polychrome.

Homeless man is found dead in car

Diving trip leads to a tragic death

A DIVING excursion in Gran Canaria led to tragedy on Wednesday, when a 46-yearold man died, just off the Morgan coast.

The emergency call was made by fellow divers just after 11am, requesting help because a person had been found unconscious in the water. The man, thought to be a foreign resident, was carried back to the portside by boat, where ambulance medics awaited to treat him.

AN investigation was launched after a man’s body was found on Tuesday afternoon inside a parked car, at the old bus station in Puerto de la Cruz. On closer inspection, there

were several signs inside the vehicle, indicating that the man had been homeless. It was initially thought that he had climbed into the car, which was parked on Calle El Pozo, to escape the cold, then probably went to sleep, and, unfortunately, passed away through natural causes.

THE British government has confirmed that it will continue to inflation-proof the state pension for the hundreds of thousands of expats, who retired within the EU, for a year, post-Brexit.

There has been a cloud over arrangements for state pension increases for those UK citizens who have retired abroad, with the annual increase to their pension ensuring that the payments do not lower their spending power. Currently, the state pension

But as soon as the person touched land, the medical team realised that he showed signs of a recent heart attack. They tried, immediately, to resuscitate him, but to no avail. A doctor and nurse, from a nearby medical centre, went to assist the medics, but they could only confirm the diver’s death. Local Police officers also attended the scene to collaborate with the rest of the emergency team, until the Guardia Civil arrived to take the body away.

When the coroner arrived to certify the death and have the body removed, he ordered that it be taken to the College of Legal Medicine for an autopsy, to determine the actual cause of death. Both the National and the Local Police from Puerto de la Cruz are investigating the incident.

UK state pensions will rise for EU expats after Brexit is increased each year by higher wage growth, inflation, or 2.5%. Lord Jones, of Cheltenham, wanted to know the answer to this question, so he asked the Government whether UK citizens, planning to retire abroad, would continue receiving the annual pension increase if the UK left the EU with no deal. Baroness Buscombe, UnderSecretary of State with the Department for Work and Pensions, responded by saying that the UK state pension would continue to be payable worldwide, after the UK’s departure from the EU.

“As the Government set out in its policy paper, Citizens’ Rights - EU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in the EU, we want to secure continued, reciprocal arrangements, covering the uprating of State Pensions in the EU, even in the event of a “no-deal” exit,” she said. “We will uprate the UK state pension for those living in the EU in 2019-20.” The anticipated rise in the state pension sum, 6th April 2019, has been revealed, and the full, new, state pension will see an increase of £4.25 per week. This change, from £164.35 to £168.60, equates to £221 extra per year.

Dead dolphins found stranded on beaches THREE dolphins have been found dead in the space of a week, stranded on beaches in Puerto Del Carmen, Fuerteventura.

A call was made to the Guardia Civil, reporting the first sighting on New Year’s Day, when a short-beaked common dolphin was found, washed up, at Playa de las Aguas, near Puerto Lajas. The following morning, another common dolphin was reported. And then, on 5th January, a baby dolphin

was found dead at Playa Matorral. The corpses were removed from the beaches by Fuerteventura Council’s Environmental Department officers, and were then taken to the University of Animal Health. The first dolphin was found to be in an advanced state of decomposition, which meant experts were unable to determine the cause of its death. However, a necropsy (autopsy) will be carried out on the other two, in an attempt to discover why these mammals were stranded in the first place.

Calimas galore as Tenerife’s December weather hits peak Sandy nativity scene draws record crowd

THE famous nativity scene in Gran Canaria’s Las Canteras, in its capital of Las Palmas, known as the Belen de Arena, has welcomed a record 243,000 visitors over the last couple of months. Their donations exceeded 25,000 euros, which was a huge improvement from the figures back in 2017, when the sand-built nativity scene received 171,000 visitors, with donations reaching 18,000 euros. The iconic scene was promoted this year by Las Palmas Council and the Tourist Board, as a temporary, not-to-be-missed touristic attraction, enticing holidaymakers, locals and other people from all over the island, to visit the scene during its 39-day opening period. The exhibition was demolished on Wednesday, to allow the beach on which the famous sand

stable was built, to begin to restore its natural habitat and conditions. During the closing ceremony, Inés Jiménez, Gran Canaria’s Tourist Board President, together with Olga del Pino, head of Social Action from the Canary Islands Network, Caixabank, along with the sand stable’s co-ordinators, Aday Rodríguez and Miguel Rodríguez, all handed over generous donations from visitors to the local soup kitchen, in Santo Domingo, San Pedro, La Paz, and El Carmen, making many people extremely happy.

JOSE Maria Rodriguez, head of weather forecasters AEMET, has revealed that December 2018 had more Calima days in Tenerife than any other month registered over the last 45 years.

Surprisingly, the sunrise across the Canary Islands, every morning during December, was either totally clear or slightly hazy. No clouds were seen, so no rain was felt.

A rare occurrence for people living in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz was that they experienced no rain for the whole month. And the last time an occasion like this registered in Tenerife was in 1900, say the experts. Temperatures across the islands were mostly warm, and, in some areas, even extremely warm. Experts have said: “It is strange that during December, there was no snow or frost at the Izaña weather station situated in Teide’s National Park.” There was one day, however,

when the temperature dropped, and, in La Laguna, it registered around zero degrees. The absence of wind, along with the temperature drop at night, caused slight frost deposits around the outskirts of the city, but certainly nothing to get over-excited about. As seen from the Satellite photo, the image clearly shows the Calima, which is a suspension of dust, passing through the Canary Islands, cause by sand-storms from the Sahara.

San Miguel all set for mammoth makeover SAN Miguel Mayor Arturo González, and his board of councillors, have given the green light for nearly two million euros to be spent on the improvement of services and installations across the municipality this year. The municipal sports complexes in Aldea Blanca and El Roque are receiving a mammoth investment of 700,000 euros and 350,000 euros, respectively, for the installation of artificial pitches, and an upgrade of facilities at the complexes. And from the 1,800,000-euro

pot, they have also allocated a 350,000-euro budge for the main church square in San Miguel to be renovated, and 200,000 euros to improve the municipal playgrounds of Las Chafiras I and II, Aldea Blanca, Guargacho, Punta del Lomo, El Roque, Asomada and El Portillo. The Board also approved the extra allocation of 605,000 euros for resurfacing works of several streets in the municipality, such as Juan Bethencourt Alfonso, Garañaña and Reverones in the town; and others in Tamaide. Roads will also be resurfaced in El Roque, Aldea Blanca, El Rincón and La Hoya, respectively; while in Las Zocas, work will take place

on the Viña-Vence Vieja, El Ramonal, Las Piteras and Calle El Pilon roads, as well as various, selected streets in Las Chafiras and Guargacho, together with Golf del Sur’s San Blas. “These actions allow our municipality to consolidate

services and infrastructure, meeting the requests of our residents. But they also allow us to improve the quality of life of our neighbours,” said Arturo Gonzalez and Finance Councillor Antonio Manuel Rodriguez, who also pointed out that all actions were

being carried out entirely with municipal funding. The two leaders pledged: “The goal of our Local Government group is to put out to tender as soon as possible, for the works to begin in the shortest possible time.”

Footie beats film-goers

Motorist has bruising encounter with ravine SPAIN’S box-office took a slight knock last year because the number of cinemagoers dropped by 2%, with overall revenue down by 1.9%… and all because of football!

Nationally, the box-office grossed 585.7m euros, having sold 97.7 million tickets. But David Rodriguez, managing director of statistics’ compiler Comscore Spain, said the “dip

in figures in was not alarming”, given that football’s World Cup was held in 2018, which kept Spaniards glued to the TV. Topping the chart of popular films was Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, from Universal Pictures International, which premiered in Madrid and has a Spanish director, JA Bayona. Rodriquez, said the Spanish connection “undoubtedly helped” the film achieve its No.1 ranking, with Fox’s Bohemian Rhapsody coming a close second.

A MAN, aged 63, steered his car into an Adeje ravine by accident, on Tuesday at around 7.15am, just before the rush-hour.

The Canarian Emergency Services were informed of a vehicle plummeting some 20 metres down the Ravine Vera de Erques, in Punta del Risco. An ambulance and medical helicopter were dispatched to the site immediately, and, upon arrival, medics were able to reach the man, who had severe bruising.

He was taken by helicopter to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment and close observation. Also assisting with the

emergency call-out were fire services and Guardia Civil, as well as the Local Police from Guia de Isora and Adeje.

Woman drugged and gang-raped, all on video tape FOUR men have been arrested on suspicion of video-taping their assault of a young woman, who was, allegedly, drugged and raped on New Year’s Eve.

The attack in Alicante is believed to have taken place in a basement, owned by one of the detainees, aged between 19 and 24. Guardia Civil officers arrested all four at the scene after a neighbour reported a possible assault taking place. According to reports, the 19-year-old victim met the four men, Spanish and Ecuadorian, in Benidorm, and two were understood to be known to her. On the pretence of continuing the New-Year celebrations, the four were said to have taken the young women to a different location, and, after a few drinks, the abuse began. Guardia Civil sources claim the victim, and her alleged

attackers, were found halfnaked, and the young woman “was possibly under the effects of a drug”, because she didn’t know “where she was or where she lived”. She couldn’t even recall what had happened, but officers seized a video, “which shows the woman resisting her aggressors throughout”. The court ordered “provisional detention for the detainees” as alleged perpetrators of sexual assault, two offences of abuse and one offence against privacy. One of the suspects, 22, is believed to have a history of

gender violence and sexual abuse with a minor. And the Guardia Civil suspects there might have been “similar aggressions on at least two other occasions, and with different girls”. They also believe that “more cases will arise” in the course of the investigation. The Town Council of Callosa d’En Sarria, where the alleged offence took place, has expressed its “strongest condemnation and rejection of the alleged, collective, sexual aggression”. It has also offered its “support, assistance and protection resources”.

Angry campaign to halt a return of bullfighting

HUNDREDS of campaigners are preparing to protest next week against the planned one-millioneuro relaunch of bullfighting in Marbella.

They will take to the streets tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm, to voice their anger at an apparent U-turn by the

Town Hall, over the controversial Spanish pastime. The previous administration had banned the blood sport, but city chiefs announced a refurbishment programme last month for the Marbella bullring. Meanwhile, an online petition to ban the “bloody, torturous” sport has gathered around 80,000 signatures. The Town Hall said the refurbishment project aimed

to make the bullring “safe, practicable and operational for its intended use”. But demonstrators disagree, claiming that those pushing for the move want a “return to torture and kill animals for the amusement of a few”. A Facebook statement from the protest group said: “We want it to continue like this. We do not want more death and suffering in Marbella.”

Iranian woman can’t deceive airport security THE National Police have arrested a 34-year-old Iranian woman at Gran Canaria airport, trying to board a flight to London with dodgy documents.

Officers from Border Control at Las Palmas airport requested the woman’s papers as they were carrying out checks on various flights, including the one to London. Initially, she showed them

a Greek passport and an identity card of the same nationality. But officers verified that the passport shown was listed as stolen, and the identity card showed obvious signs of manipulation, so they arrested her for falsification of documents. The police, after questioning her, determined that the woman’s real nationality was Iranian, and she was placed at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority.

Maternity Rebates ANYONE on maternity or paternity leave in 2016 or 2017 can now reclaim the income tax they paid during that period.

The Spanish Government has just launched the second phase of tax rebates for parents on leave, after a recent court ruling found that they should not have been making payments. During December’s first phase, income tax on paternity and maternity leave taken in 2014 and 2015 was refunded. This time around, the State is expected to have to shell out around €1.2 billion, and the second round of refunds is expected to leave about a million mums and dads better off. Those who qualify follow exactly the same process as recipients of the December rebates, on the tax office’s website, agenciatributaria.es, or they can place the matter in the hands of an accountant if they prefer, although a fee will be involved. The only data needed on the website is the year in which the parental leave took place, and a bank account number. No further

documentation or proof of receipt of maternity or paternity pay is necessary – the tax office will apply for all the paperwork it needs from the Social Security office. The online-systems applicants can use include the RENO programme or the Clave PIN for those who do not have

a digital signature – both of which are used by members of the public for making annual tax returns where they do not use a financial advisor. Otherwise, postal or in-person applications for a rebate can be made using hard copies of the forms, and, once again, only the year of leave and a

bank account number are necessary. Applications will take a matter of days to process, meaning the cash could come through before the end of the month. Parents who took maternity or paternity leave in 2018, and paid income tax they should

not have been charged, do not have to take any action to reclaim their funds, since these will be taken into account in their annual declarations due in the spring. A Royal Decree, or Bill of Law approved on December 28, means that even those on leave who were not initially thought to be affected, may be able to apply for reimbursement. These include public-sector employees who are on a different contribution system from the main Social Security scheme, and who received monthly pay during leave for the birth, adoption or fostering of a child, and also selfemployed workers and those affiliated to a mutual society, rather than the mainstream National-Insurance system. Anyone who is unsure should contact their accountant or their company’s accounts department. The average incometax refund for maternity leave is expected to be around €1,600, whilst for paternity leave, about €383. In December alone, tax authorities received nearly 673,000 applications for rebates, for those on maternity or paternity leave in 2014 and 2015.

International hunt for fugitive is over ATTILA Gyulai, who once owned one of Chicago’s top restaurants, was arrested in Spain following a worldwide manhunt.

His 10 months on the run, following a wire-fraud scandal, ended when Gyulai was finally captured at a private home in Valencia, having travelled from Ecuador. The fugitive’s former restaurant, Embeya, opened in 2012 to rave reviews. But in 2016, Gyulai and his wife,

reportedly, closed it down out of the blue, abandoned their car, and fled the country. According to reports, a judge in the same year ruled that Gyulai had deceived his former restaurant partners, Thai and Danielle Dang, and left them with loans totalling more than one million euros. A year later, the FBI issued a warrant for Gyulai’s arrest, and he had been on the run since. But the process of extraditing Gyulai to the US from Spain could take time, and no court dates had been set at the time of going to press.

Retirement age up again THE retirement age in Spain has risen to 65 years and eight months, in line with an agreement made in 2011 to extend it, progressively, to 67 by the year 2027.

However, anybody who reached 65 last year, having racked up a quota of 36 years and nine months, may retire without delay. Otherwise, they must wait to retire at the legal age, eight months later. The extension of the retirement age has been one of the most controversial measures to “guarantee the stability of the system”. Alongside it, the limitation on the rise of pensions with the

‘Most dangerous’ criminal may be moved to new jail

GUARDIA CIVIL bomb experts have defused an artillery shell, dredged up in the port of Valencia City by the Spanish Navy. Officers from the Divers Unit of the Special Group for the Deactivation of Explosives (GEDE) were despatched to Valencia

City from Cartagena, after the projectile was found last week. The 105mm shell became lodged in a dredger, being operated in the port by the Navy. Its origin is unknown, but social-media contributors believe that it might have dated from the Spanish Civil War. The shell was defused in Valencia’s port before being disposed of in Cartagena.

FABRIZIO Joao, the “Hannibal Lecter” of Spanish prisons, and regarded as the country’s most dangerous criminal, may be transferred because of overcrowding, along with safety fears.

The convicted murderer, serving a 50-year jail term in total isolation at Coruña’s Teixeiro prison, is rumoured to be moving to La Lama, also in the Galician community. The 6ft 4in tall Joao was convicted of murdering his girlfriend and a cellmate. And, at a Cadiz jail, he also attacked eight prison officials, all of whom were hospitalised, and two “almost

losing their lives”. He now has an “isolated existence”, having no contact with staff or inmates. The Penitentiary Institution was forced to design a “careful plan to avoid contact” with everybody else in the prison. He eats and showers in his cell, and, when he goes into the yard, he goes alone and the doors open automatically. He is “controlled through screens”.

Teixeiro is designed to house 1,000 inmates, but holds almost 1,800 at present. And staff are concerned about their ability to protect themselves from dangerous prisoners. According to the Spanish press, wardens have requested control weapons, such as laser guns, claiming: “There are quarrels almost daily, to the point that they are no longer new. But we put our integrity at risk.”

Drug-driver runs over teenager and kills him THE 14-year-old British boy, run over and killed in Ibiza on New Year’s Day, was hit by a car driven by an alleged drug-taking woman.

The teenager was struck while “in the middle of the road”, according to the Guardia Civil. The incident occurred at

around 10.30pm, just a day after the boy had celebrated his New-Year’sEve birthday. Initially, the driver was believed to have been a man, driving his family in a Ford Fiesta, who later tested negative for alcohol and drugs. However, it has since been proved that the driver was actually his partner, a 29-year-old Spanish woman. The man was said to have

incriminated himself, knowing that his drug-and-alcohol test would be negative. The Guardia believed the woman had consumed drugs before the tragic incident, and investigating officers are currently awaiting the final results to be confirmed. If the drug and alcohol test results prove positive, the woman will be charged with a “crime against road safety and reckless homicide”.

Spain’s Maritime Rescue Service saved 549 migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea last weekend.

Its vessel intercepted six small boats, carrying a total of 350 people on the Saturday, east of the Strait of Gibraltar. And on Sunday, another 199 migrants were pulled from

five various crafts, two of which were tiny recreational boats. One was carrying four children, and the other was packed with 10 adults. The European Union’s border agency revealed last Friday that 57,000 illegal immigrants reached Spain last year, which was double the 2017 figure. Overall, though, unauthorised border crossings into Europe hit a five-year low.

MAKE sure one New Year’s resolution is to review your financial planning, to check it is on track to protect your family’s longterm wealth.

Preparing for Brexit Whatever happens with Brexit, those already formally resident in Spain have the right to remain, and can continue receiving the same benefits as today, for as long as they are settled here. If you plan to move to Spain, or have not yet registered as tax resident, take urgent steps to establish your settled status before 29th March 2019. Tax planning Regular tax reviews can ensure your wealth is arranged in the most suitable way, to limit

your liabilities while meeting your obligations. Today, with the “automatic exchange of information” regime well underway, it is more important than ever to get it right. Over 100 countries, including Spain and the UK, are sharing data on residents’ overseas income and assets, with more joining each year. This means your local tax office will automatically receive financial information about you. Remember, in extreme cases, tax evasion can result in prosecution, even if unintentional, so take specialist advice to achieve peace of mind, and potentially secure significant tax savings. Savings and investments The Bank of England (BoE) increased the UK interest rate to 0.75% in August, the first time in over nine years that rates reached over half a percent. While some

PM’s flight expenses are ‘a joke’ says PP member

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is at the centre of a controversy, following the Government’s claim that his use of a private ministerial jet, to travel to and from Valencia’s Benicassim festival, cost just 282.92 euros.

The figure was revealed, following a request, made under Government transparency rules, from Luis Salom, a Valencia-based member of the conservative Partido Popular (PP). Sanchez flew aboard the Falcon armed forces private jet in July. The details, signed by Prime Minister’s Office official Maria Hilda Jimenez, read: “The total expense calculated by the Protocol Department was 282.92 euros.” But Salom regarded the response as “a joke”, and the government’s figure spawned a series of memes on social networks, including: *Spain’s Transparency and Good Government Council (CTyBG) ruled the information could be

banks eventually passed on an increase to savers, rates remain relatively low - around 1.5% for easy access, and up to 2.7% for locking cash away for five years. With the current rate of inflation still above the BoE’s target of 2% (as high as 2.7% last August), many savers are actually earning a negative real rate of return. British expatriates have the added concern of exchange currency risk, in what is currently a highly volatile time for sterling. Successful investing is about having a strategy based on your personal circumstances, time horizon, needs, aims and risk tolerance. You should ensure that you have adequate diversification, to avoid over-exposure to any given country (including the UK), asset type, sector or company. Using investment structures that allow multicurrency flexibility can help

minimise exchange-rate risk. Remember to review your portfolio annually, to take market developments into account, address any changes in your circumstances and take advantage of opportunities for residents in Spain. Pensions Today’s pension landscape offers more choices than ever, but this may change with Brexit. For example, it is possible that tax-free transfers to Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) may be targeted, once the UK sheds its EU obligations. Carefully weigh up all your options, as well as the tax implications in Spain and the UK, to establish the best course of action for you. Make sure you take regulated advice to protect your retirement savings from pension scams, and do what is right for your personal circumstances and aims.

Estate planning In Spain, both succession law and tax work very differently from the UK, so your estate plan should be set up accordingly. If you remain UK domiciled, as many expatriates do, you continue to be liable for UK inheritance tax, so you should plan to reduce this liability for your heirs. Speaking of heirs, do not forget to take into account any new additions to your family, this year! Whether it is tax, investments, pensions or estate planning, take personalised advice to establish the most suitable approach for you. Spending time on a financial healthcheck now, can provide peace of mind that you and your family are in the best position to enjoy a prosperous 2019, and beyond. Irish Fiddler golfers swing into action for Cancer Bus

THE Irish Fiddler bar, in Puerto Colon, held its annual charity golf tournament last Friday, and, as usual, there was a fabulous response from the players. released, after details on the trip were previously declared an official secret. *The CTyBG has since called on the government to release details of the total cost of the trip, including the opening of Castellon Airport so the plane could land. *The 282.92-euro figure is believed to refer to fuel costs. Carmen Calvo, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, has also been summoned to appear before a parliamentary expenses committee to explain why the information was declared secret. But security concerns have been cited by the government, previously, and Ms Calvo is also expected to explain why Sanchez used the Falcon jet, and other government aircraft for travel, including one to his brother-in-law’s wedding.

They raised a grand total of 5,242 euros to help the charity fund keep the Cancer Bus on the road for deserving cases. The event, which attracted 56 players, was staged at the Las Américas golf course, and the winning foursome comprised Mark Wallace, Dean Wallace, Craig Scott and John Knowles. The Victorian House Of Arts & Crafts Friday 11th January, BBC2, 21.00

In this new, unique four-part series a late 1800s Victorian Arts & Crafts commune in the Welsh hills has been painstakingly brought back to life as a group of six 21st century crafters - three men and three women - move in to experience the highs and lows of living and working together as a creative commune. Over their month-long stay the crafters are set to renovate four of the key spaces in the house. Throughout the series Anita Rani is joined by internationally renowned potter Keith Brymer Jones and Arts & Crafts expert and dealer Patch Rogers, as the six crafters are faced with the challenge of breathing life back in to the Victorian parlour. Using original Victorian tools and techniques they will create Arts & Crafts objects including a Sussex Chair, CR Ashbee Bowl, and William Morris-inspired wallpaper. All from scratch and all in a week... All the while eating, working and living within the philosophies first outlined by the likes of John Ruskin and William Morris. Will their 1890s communal life help them to better understand the depth and scale of the Arts & Crafts movement both as a power for artistic and social change? And will the Arts & Crafts life make them better crafters and reconnect them creatively to what they love?

It’s 1956 and with Amanda long gone, Sidney’s life now revolves around the church services and the interminable meetings of the Parochial Council and their plans for a village fete. He yearns for some excitement, and Geordie has noticed that Sidney’s devil-may-care attitude feels increasingly like a death wish. In need of spiritual sustenance, Sidney and Leonard go to hear inspirational civil rights activist Reverend Nathaniel Todd talk in Cambridge as part of a fundraising tour. Todd is accompanied by his son Charles, daughter Violet, and fellow activist Robert DeVeaux. Professor Barkley and his wife Madhia host their stay, and while at their house, Leonard introduces Sidney to an old friend, Will Davenport. Will is the current Chaplain at Corpus Christi, following in Sidney’s footsteps. Sidney strikes up a conversation with beautiful, vibrant Violet Todd and sparks soon fly. At the talk, Nathaniel’s impassioned speech invigorates Sidney until he is interrupted by a racist young student, Gregory Jones, who verbally attacks the pastor. Chaos then erupts and what sound like gunshots ring through the church as fireworks are thrown by protestors. Sidney, Leonard, Will, the Barkleys and the Todds are all almost crushed by the crowd trying to escape. Finally, Will breaks open the door and they spill out of the church... but Charles Todd staggers forward, stabbed by an unseen assailant, and dies in his father’s arms. As Geordie and Sidney set about finding the killer, Reverend Todd wrestles with his grief, Violet steels herself to speak out, Sidney wrestles with his growing feelings for her – and Leonard has a poem prepared for the village fete...

07:35...................................Frasier

It’s spring time and with extra help needed in Poplar, Mother Mildred (Miriam Margolyes) decides to send Sister Frances (Ella Broccoleri) and Sister Hilda (Fenella Woolgar) to Nonnatus House, where they will live and work. Everyone is excited for the impending arrival of the Queen’s baby. Violet (Annabelle Apsion) is holding a Teddy Bears’ Picnic and raising funds through a sweepstake on whether the Queen will have a boy or a girl. The midwives are introduced to their new midwifery bags, but Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) is distressed when she sees Fred (Cliff Parisi) burning the old leather ones. Lucille (Leonie Elliott) is caring for heavily pregnant Lesley White (Jordon Stevens), whose sister Cath (Emily Barber), an aspiring model, has been feeling extremely unwell. Back at the maternity home, Shelagh (Laura Main) has to step in to help Trixie (Helen George) with a birth that takes a surprise turn.

After an emotional funeral for Colin's Dad, he and Cathy have the neighbours round. Understandably Colin is not his usual upbeat self. Christine was not impressed with the service or the priest and, as usual, is not backward about coming forward with her opinions on the whole affair. And as Beth, Eric and Ian try to make their excuses to leave early, Cathy manages to foil their escape by inviting more of the neighbours in. As the drink flows with Cathy’s encouragement, Colin reminisces about the late-departed Willie, and encourages his neighbours to do the same. But as the guests look on - brandy glasses in hand - Cathy tries to turn the solemn occasion into a party, complete with wildly inappropriate music and games. Beth Baird is played by Arabella Weir, and her husband Eric by Alex Norton, with Doon Mackichan as Cathy, Jonathan Watson as her husband Colin, with Elaine C Smith as neighbour Christine, while Jamie Quinn plays the Bairds’ son Ian and Kieran Hodgson is Gordon.

Revolution In Ruins: The Hugo Chávez Story BBC2, 21.00

When Hugo Chávez stormed to power in Venezuela in 1998 he promised to transform the lives of the poor. But now 20 years on, 90 percent of families in Venezuela say they do not have enough to eat - and the United Nations predicts that over five million people will have fled the country by the end of 2019. Chávez was at the helm of the country with the largest proven oil reserves in the world, and set about spending Venezuela’s vast oil wealth. Around the world he was hailed as a new hope for Socialism by some politicians. A precursor to many of today’s populist leaders, Chávez bypassed traditional media and spoke directly to the people through his weekly live TV show. Told by many of those who knew him, this is the story of incredible short-term achievements in health and education, but also of the tragic legacy of his idealism, populism and ruthless pursuit of absolute power. With populist movements increasingly taking power in countries around the world, it’s a story that's now more relevant than ever.

The 1940s and 50s. The Second World War is over, and with it comes a revolution in education - the tripartite system, splitting children into one of three schools: grammars, secondary moderns and technical schools. This is the first time in British history that free education for all up to the age of 15 is finally achieved. The pupils are attending a grammar school, having passed the 11+, representing the one in four who won one of these coveted places. This era takes travels from the immediate post-war to the birth of modernity, as changing attitudes in Britain are reflected inside the classroom walls. The grammar marks a return to traditional academic chalk and talk or learning by rote. Pupils delve into new teachings on sex education, trips to Harvest Camp, cycling proficiency, the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, rising incomes in the mid-50s as well as debates among boys and girls on the matter of Would You Fight For Queen And Country?

Is Exmouth crocodile now living over here? THE hunt is on to find a crocodile named Donald/ Donna, almost 40 years after he left an East Devon Zoo. Donald was part of a large menagerie of animals owned by Julia Gillick’s family and kept in their Devon home in the 1960s.

Julia, from Brighton, wants to track down Donald to cheer up her mother’s cousin, Donald’s original owner, after her husband Ralph passed away last year. She met her mum’s cousin, Julia Hopper, recently and while looking over old pictures, a plan was hatched to track down the mysterious crocodile. The curious case of Donald the crocodile started when he was handed over to Exmouth Zoo at some time in the 1960s. “She said they got sent him off to the zoo as a youngster because new legislation came in that meant their monkey needed a larger enclosure,” said Julia. What happened to Donald directly after the zoo closed down in 1980 is not clear, but Julia believes he turned up again at Brighton Aquarium, now Brighton Sea Life Centre, some months later. There is a good chance Donald is still alive because crocodiles can live for up to 90 to 100 years old. A historian at Brighton Sea Life Centre has offered Julia a tantalising clue as to where Donald may have gone. Julia said: “My family were always under the impression that Donald was male but, apparently, crocodiles are notorious difficult to sex. We’ve

now seen a record from a newspaper about a crocodile named Donna, at Brighton Aquarium. Tenerife is where the trail goes cold. According to Loro Parque staff, the crocodile came to the centre, prior to having a change of owners in 1991. If Donald is actually Donna, Loro Parque’s resident historian believes he/she was sent to a zoo in Tenerife. Julia is hoping her investigation, and a social media campaign, will help track down the mystery crocodile, and that she will be able to get a picture of her family’s long-lost animal. Julia added: “I really believe he’s in Tenerife, and I would love a picture, and a little update, on how Donna/ Donald is doing.” Two other Tenerife zoos keep crocodiles, so there is hope for Julia. In the meantime, if you do happen to spot a croc strolling down your street, please contact info@canarianweekly.com

Three dead and 29 injured in fire at apartment block

AN apartment-block blaze in Badalona, near Barcelona, just after 9am on New Year’s Eve, left at least three people dead, including a 92-year-old person. And a baby was among 29 injured.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but a spokeswoman for Catalonia firefighters confirmed that among the injured were a baby boy, who is “critical”, and two adults, in a “serious condition”. The blaze, at the 10-storey block, was

extinguished by 11.15am, reportedly, leaving the building streaked with black marks. Some 37 firefighters from across the region were involved in tackling the fire, and the eviction of the building. Witnesses claim that some of those trapped in the block waited 40 minutes to be rescued from the higher floors. But Eduard Martinez, emergency chief of the Northern Metropolitan Region of Firefighters, gave an assurance that, after receiving the 9.09am alert, the departure and arrival of the troops “had been immediate”. An investigation is underway.

A NEW chapter is unfolding in the ongoing saga over what to do with the body of late Spanish dictator Francisco Franco.

The latest development sees the Catholic Church informing Government officials that it is being denied authorisation to access the mausoleum where Franco is buried, inside the Valley of the Fallen, a controversial Civil War memorial in the mountains outside Madrid. But Prior Santiago Cantera’s obstruction will not prevent the process from moving ahead. The decision was relayed on 26th December by Santiago Cantera, Prior of the Valley of the Fallen. Two weeks earlier, Justice Minister Dolores Delgado had formally requested permission to enter the basilica. The religious leader cited the disagreement of the Franco family, and noted that the matter was still in the courts. The Supreme Court, which the Franco family has asked to stop the exhumation, is expected to hand down a decision within three months. A Government source said it was “expecting this attitude from Santiago Cantera, whose ideological history is a matter of public knowledge”. The executive noted that, before joining the Order of Saint Benedict, Cantera was “a candidate in the 1993 Spanish election, and in the 1994 European election with the Spanish Independent

Franco reburial rebuff unable to halt controversy

Falange”, a defunct neofascist party. Despite this new setback, the PSOE Socialist Government of Pedro Sánchez says it will forge ahead with its plans. “The obstructionist position of Prior Santiago Cantera will not prevent the process from moving ahead,” said the

executive, in a release. “Despite the setbacks that could result from Prior Cantera’s refusal, the Government maintains its decision to press ahead with the exhumation process, while respecting every guarantee that the Franco family is entitled to by law.”

The Valley of the Fallen contains a mass grave, with around 30,000 bodies, as well as the tombs of Franco and José Antonio Primo de Rivera, founder of the fascist Falange Española. The nature of the memorial, and the need to reform it, has been the subject of years

of debating in Spain. Pedro Sánchez, who came to power early last June, on the back of a no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy of the Popular Party (PP), made it a priority to move Franco’s remains out of the basilica. He wants to make the Valley of the Fallen a more neutral place to honour the victims of the 1936-1939 war, and subsequent dictatorship. The Prior noted that the matter was still pending a decision by the Supreme Court. But his plan has met with fierce opposition from the Franco family, which has retained top lawyers to devise ways to prevent it. In October, the family said that, if forced to take their grandfather out of the Valley, they would move him to the family vault inside La Almudena cathedral, in the heart of Madrid’s most tourist-heavy district. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo travelled to Rome to discuss the matter with Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis’ right-hand man. The Government also sought to block the move by amending the Historical Memory Law, but this was not possible because of opposition from other parties. In late December, the Government’s Madrid delegate produced a report, citing security reasons to prohibit Franco’s reburial in La Almudena. The report said there would be a risk of confrontations between Franco detractors and supporters.

Spanish mountaineers are killed in avalanche THE bodies of three Spanish mountaineers and their Peruvian guide, killed on Sunday in an avalanche in the Andes of Peru, have been recovered. They have been identified

by local media as Spaniards Adrian San Juan Pello, Sergio Porteros Perello and Borrul Regal, along with guide Ruben Dario Alva. Although Ruben was alive at the time of rescue, he died

shortly afterwards because of his injuries. Their bodies were transferred to Carhauz, 400km north of Lima, by members of Peru’s High Mountain Rescue Unit of the National Police, and

the Association of Mountain Guides, and repatriation was expected to take place on Tuesday. Another Spanish mountaineer, 26-year-old Paolo Belmonte Calderon, survived, and was said to be “in good condition” after being admitted to a

Huaraz clinic. A spokesman for the High Mountain Unit told Efe that the group had “crowned” the snowcovered, 5,000m-high Mateo peak, when an avalanche occurred at around midday, dragging their bodies some 200 metres.

Awful rail tragedy is commemorated

SPAIN marked the 75th anniversary of one of the worst rail disasters in the country’s history last week. The Torre del Bierzo railway accident happened on 3rd January 1944, when a passenger and freight train crashed into one another in a Castilla y Leon tunnel. The passenger train, travelling from Madrid to La Coruña in Galicia, was carrying an estimated 900 people in 12 carriages. The then Franco regime

claimed the death toll was 78, but later studies placed the figure somewhere between 200 and 800. The regime was believed to have concealed the true number of fatalities to avoid criticism over its management of Spain’s railways. The crash was the subject of Tunnel Number 20, Ramon de Fontecha’s short documentary, which won a Goya Award in Spain’s annual film competition in 2002.

POLICE have arrested 16 people, who, illegally, built 14 luxury homes in a rural area of La Línea de la Concepción, in southern Spain.

Investigators suspect that the land sale was perfect for laundering money, in an area which is home to dozens of drug gangs. The residential complex, which covers over 11,000sq/m, was erected without a single building permit, and in blatant violation of zoning laws. The link between smuggling drugs and tobacco, as well as illegal construction, is well known to law-enforcement officers in the area. The homes are located in El Zabal, a neighbourhood which houses many drug-dealers operating in the area near the Rock of Gibraltar. At ground level, the high walls make it impossible to see the large villas and swimming pools contained within. The properties “suggest a lifestyle that does not match the income declared by their owners or dwellers,” said a Cadiz source at the National Police there. There has long been an aura of impunity around the drug lords of La Línea, a city hard hit by unemployment. But these gangs provide jobs and benefits there, which have earned them the loyalty of inhabitants. And drug gangs in the area are known for flaunting their activities. The police estimate that there could be more than 30 gangs dealing drugs, and 3,000 direct collaborators, operating in the region.

11th January 2019 - 17th January 2019

Police put clamp on drug-dealers’ luxury mansions

Last October, Francisco Tejón, leader of the Los Castañas gang, turned himself in shortly after he was recognised in a reggaeton music video. He had been hiding out for two years inside a maze of La Linea properties. In September 2018, the police precinct in La Línea created a specific, moneylaundering task-force to support the ongoing fight against drug-trafficking in Campo de Gibraltar. A source from this unit said of the existence of the luxury villas in El Zabal: “It was common knowledge, and people were starting to talk.” The plot of land was bought in late 2017 for 28,000 euros, and the new owners divided it up, quickly, into 14 individual properties. Yet zoning ordinances insist this is agricultural land, upon which no construction is allowed to take place. Some of the suspects were already under investigation for drug-related activities, and the police believe that the money for the land acquisition came from hashish-trafficking. The suspects face zoning violation charges, which

entail prison terms of one to three years. But investigators admit that the whole thing will probably end with financial penalties and an order to tear down the homes, “which will be complicated”. Whether drug money was laundered through the land sale will not come up at the trial. But police sources in La Línea said they were following up on

this line of investigation. Cádiz prosecutors noted in a 2017 report that the proliferation of illegal neighbourhoods in La Línea, Algeciras and Sanlúcar de Barrameda creates a situation that feeds on itself, since, the more illegal buildings there are, the more the problem becomes chronic. Ghettos are established, where traffickers can come

and go as they please, making police work in the area extremely difficult. City officials in La Línea have identified around 1,000 illegal homes in the El Zabal area, and they have initiated 400 violation proceedings. But the department is under-staffed, and, while bureaucracy drags its feet, new illegal homes keep springing up… all paid for with drug money!

Scientists have ‘created’ drug to kill skin cancer SCIENTISTS in Spain believe they have created a “vaccine” against one form of cancer which can be effective, without any side-effects. Researchers from Madrid’s Gregorio Marañon Hospital, and from the Clinica Universidad de Navarra, say they have proved there is a molecule which could activate the body’s defences against melanoma, as well as

fight against tumours. New company BioncoTech has now turned the discovery into a drug, which could save the life of skin-cancer patients who do not respond to traditional immunotherapy. Ivan Marquez Rodas, medical oncologist of Gregorio Marañon, said: “We know that between 30-40% patients don’t respond to the nivolumab or pembrolizumab drugs, which activate antiPD1 antibodies and have the best effects

against cancer cells.” He is adamant that this new drug works differently by creating immunity within a patient’s body, so that it defends against a tumour, and adds: “We have observed that it does not produce serious sideeffects.” During a study, 28 patients with solid tumours were treated with the drug, to test for safety and effectiveness. The medication was able to control cancers in 58% of cases, reducing tumour size in 17% of patients.

They all arrived at the refuge when only three days old, with their eyes still closed. After lots of love and care from their mum, and the very kind and caring staff at Accion del Sol, they are all fit and well, and ready for adoption. This little puppy has already been adopted by Susan Ellis, who also has an older, gorgeous dog called Biscuit. Biscuit is so happy to be with the puppy, and she now has a new lease of life, in her later years. Some of Alba’s brothers and sisters are also up for adoption, so please do come and visit us, if you are interested in adopting a dog. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm.

Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find

us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol

A LOVELY family came to adopt one of our pups, Queen. On leaving the shelter she became upset, because she was being separated from her brother. They had been brought in together as pups, and relied on each other, emotionally. The family decided that they could not see them parted, and adopted Harlem, too. It was a great start to the New Year. If you would like to adopt any of our dogs, please call Marc on 6522 97853, and he can arrange for you to visit one morning. Or come along to our dog-walking club. Dog-walking club The dogs have a fabulous time with the walkers, and are looking forward to going out for a wander again tomorrow (Saturday). It’s a great way of getting to know the dogs’

personalities, and for you to get some exercise! Please feel free to pop along, even if it’s just for a chat. If you have any questions, WhatsApp Oceana on 0033 659 242 572, for further details. unlimited! It’s us again from Keddy’s Entertainment, and we would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year!

The Swallows have arrived (a lovely nickname for our more-mature visitors, who spend the winter here), and we thought we would catch up with Jackie. Over the years, she has spent many winter months in Tenerife, escaping the cold, UK weather, and has now decided to be here more permanently. She has fallen in love with this beautiful island, like many of us who are living and working here. This is what she had to say about the entertainment and bars, in the south of Tenerife. “I can clearly remember the very first holiday on this lovely sunny island, over 26 years ago,” she recalled. “My husband and I stayed at the Tenerife Princess hotel, Playa de Las Americas, which is now known as the Tenerife Best. “Happily, for the past few years, we have been fortunate enough to turn into regular Swallows! An apt term for us young-at-heart retirees, who escape the UK winters, and arrive to enjoy all that this beautiful island and heavenly climate offers us. “Until recently, we were based in the Los Cristianos area. One goal really counts in life, and it’s pretty simple, really: life is for living, and it is very precious. “After working hard all our lives, we fortunate ratrace escapees want to be entertained, enjoy the great sunshine, keep healthy, have lots of fun - and relax. “We really enjoy sampling lots of the amazing bars and restaurants. We have

expanding waistlines, but what the heck? We still like to visit Veronica’s, too, because you’re never too old to party! “The many entertainment offerings here have always been a great attraction, with a raft of top-class acts. The mix of talent and variety is truly brilliant. “Laughing and creating wonderful memories is a great tonic for one’s soul, which leads me, nicely, onto to a favourite haunt - the Soul Suite on Parque de la Paz. “Here, you can literally go from one great bar to another, watching the soul vocalists, and other fantastic artistes. You can experience every type of different entertainment on one lovely strip,

with a couple of well-established Chinese restaurants along the way, open until late. “Over the years, we have seen many changes. Bars alter and close, and new ones open. However, the calibre of entertainment has remained ever-constant, evolving and going from strength to strength. “It’s always good to sample various types of entertainment. The Brewers Droop in Playa de Las Americas will always ensure a warm welcome, and has a great buzz and wonderful atmosphere. Here you can be entertained, nightly, by fabulous artistes and your compere, Doris, and catch the wonderful Soul Brothers. “At Crystal’s Palace, also on

The Patch, Miss Crystal is a glitzy hostess, definitely with the mostest. She will be sure to put a smile on your face! Years ago, there was a lovely bar called The Full Monty. “It’s now massive and known as The Dubliner, and always has really good, live bands performing. The Magic Lounge is definitely great for glamour and cheeky cocktails, on this pleasant Isle of Fernando’s. Margarita’s provides another fabulous night, with some great talent such as the wonderful Hayley Butler. Dylan’s Bar, in Los Cristianos, offers great food during the day, for a spot of lunch, and has some fab acts including Joe Harriet, who is another, fantastic, soul singer. “A few months ago, we

were excited to return to another part of the island, and took up residence in San Blas, Golf del Sur. We are already exploring, and have discovered it to be a great laid-back resort, with lots of exciting nuggets of entertainment to be enjoyed. “The top square has a feast of entertainment for everyone to enjoy, which suits all tastes. With compere Jo Cassidy, there are many bars, live music, and singalong dancing in the street, always with a very warm welcome. “I was mooching around, recently, and came across Seven Islands Sports Bar in the main square on San Blas. The lovely and charming Maggie and Bill have recently taken over the bar, and offer nightly entertainment, ranging from all the live sports, to a variety of acts. “Tenerife has such a diverse entertainment scene, so, even if I live to be a 100, I doubt I’ll be able to get around them all. However, I’m going to give it my best shot, and then relax and take in the glorious views from our garden. I’ll be listening to Oasis Fm on 106.6 or 98.4 Fm every day, finding out what’s going on, and when and where.” That’s it from Jackie, until next time. All in all, we are blessed with the variety of acts and first-class entertainment, from hard rock to blues, that we have throughout this wonderful island. Karaoke fans are spoilt for choice, and there is a heady mix of first-rate, quality entertainment! From all of us at Keddy’s Entertainment, we wish you happy exploring, and we might see you out and about, very soon! By Val Sainsbury TENERIFE is a great place to be, with plenty of warm sunshine, all year round. But it's not always that perfect, because there are, invariably, the annoying bugs and insects to bother us.

Many people use insect repellents that may contain harmful substances. These chemicals are detrimental to our wellbeing, and can lead to health issues. Try to use a natural way in order to repel insects. There are many natural ingredients that are completely safe to use, and can provide better results than the chemical insect repellents. Citrus peel The peel of the citrus fruits can be used for rubbing the areas of the house that are more likely to have spiders, like bookshelves or windowsills. Garlic Eating plenty of garlic

By Emma

from Motorworld

RECENTLY, we have received a lot of questions regarding insurance companies and repairs. Here, we are going to cover some of the mostcommon questions:

When I breakdown, do I get to choose the garage where my car gets taken to? Yes, you do. All insurance companies that offer the service of “asistencia en carretera” (road-side assistance) allow you to select the garage where the car is taken to. The operator at the time may ask you to which garage you want the car taken, or they may just ask you the area of the garage, and then you inform the recovery company of the car’s final destination. We have been told,

11th January 2019 - 17th January 2019

Don't let the bed-bugs bite! can help you to keep the mosquitoes away. When your body secretes the garlic, bugs will sense it, thus staying away from you. If you don't want to experience garlic breath, you can also sprinkle garlic powder around your house! White vinegar This can be very effective in the case of ant problems. All you have to do is put some white vinegar in a spray bottle, and apply to the areas of your home where ants may appear. Herbs Plant some fragrant herbs around the front and back door of your home, to keep bugs from getting into your house. You can try basil, catnip, garlic, mint, citronella, lemongrass and bay leaves. Keep a clean house Keeping your house clean is an excellent way to keep pests away. You should dust, vacuum and wash all the surfaces with soapy water, regularly! Cinnamon Cinnamon can also help you to protect your home from bugs. If you sprinkle the cinnamon in a line around the bugs' point of entry, they will not cross the line! Another interesting fact is that sprinkling cinnamon in children's sandpits can also keep the bugs away!

Baby powder Baby powder can be more effective than chemicals. Just sprinkle it around your home, and it will effectively repel those annoying pests. Chalk Ants avoid walking through chalk, so, if you want to eliminate them, just draw chalk lines around your home, and see the amazing results! Cucumber slices Slice a cucumber and leave it on your kitchen worktop. Ants do not like cucumber, so they will stay far away from your kitchen. Onion Slice some onions and toss them in a bowl of water. This will make the bugs run! In order to protect the plants

in your garden, grow onion plants alonside them. Sugar and baking soda Cockroaches are attracted to sugar. Take equal parts of sugar and baking soda, mix them, and sprinkle in areas where roaches can appear. The sugar/baking-soda mix will affect their digestive systems, and eventually kill them. Vanilla extract You can prepare an insect repellent that does not smell like onions or garlic! Mix the vanilla extract with water, and add lemongrass extract, lavender, or mint extracts. This insect repellent will smell good, and will effectively keep the pests away! Wear light clothing

Mosquitoes are attracted to dark-coloured clothes, so consider wearing garments which are light-coloured. Relax When we stress or sweat, our body releases pheromones and hormones that the bugs are attracted to. Try to calm down, because you are becoming a target for the bugs! Citronella Bugs do not like this lemony, grass-like plant at all! Citronella is found in many outdoor candles, lanterns and torches. It is one of the most-effective, natural insect repellents. You can use the candles, apply the oil on your skin, or plant citronella grass outside your home. Use unscented toiletries Bugs are naturally attracted to fruit and flowers. If you are using strawberry-mango shampoo, you are more likely to be their target. If you have a huge problem with bug bites, make sure to use unscented or fragrance-free body products. Standing water The fact that mosquitoes prefer to live near standing water indicates that you may be unintentionally inviting them to come in your home, so remove any containers that might be harbouring stagnant water.

Insurance breakdown assistance and repairs increasingly, that a lot of recovery companies, once they have arrived at the breakdown, are telling customers that the company has said no to their choice of garage, and that they have to take it somewhere else (usually their own repairer garage). This is not the case. The companies, usually either RACE or ARAG, can help in selecting a repairer. If you are not familiar with one, however, the ultimate choice is yours, and the car can go to your own mechanic. If I have a battery failure, do I have to purchase the new battery from the recovery company? As above, if your insurer offers the road-side assistance service, then, normally, they also offer a jump-start service from home. The normal practice is to send out a van with jump-starter or jumpleads, and for them to jumpstart your car. They then usually offer, for a fee, to fit a new battery for

you. This is not compulsory, and you don’t have to purchase their battery. You can ask them jump-start your car, and then go and collect your own battery from your mechanic or parts supplier. When I have an accident, do I have to go to my insurance company’s approved repairer? In most cases, no. However, some companies, as a result of a reduced premium, do not allow you freedom of choice. However, most of the bigger companies, such as Linea Directa, AXA, Zurich, Liberty, Plus Ultra, Mapfre etc., allow you to select your own repairer. This is obviously better, because you are then free to select someone you trust, or have used in the past. However, some, but not all, agents do try to force/ coerce the customer to use the approved repairers, because it is cheaper for the company. This is because approved

repairers are forced to offer cheaper prices, so it can mean that corners are cut during the repair. As already mentioned, depending on your insurer, you can take your car to the garage of your choice for the repair. This is something to check when taking out insurance with a new company. Do I have to use the approved glass repairer? Again, in most cases, no, but some companies offer the option of a reduced premium, if, in the event of a break or crack, you are happy to use one of their authorised repairers. If, however, you wish to use your own choice of repairer, then that option is available to you, as long as your policy allows it. Again, this is something to ask when changing companies. But most of the larger glass companies now come and change the glass on site, which generally suits the client more than having to leave the

car at a designated garage. If I have an accident and I don’t use the insurance company’s approved repairer, am I still entitled to a hire car if my policy covers it? This, again, is dependent on the insurer, but, with the larger companies, the courtesy car is a facility offered in the event of an accident, regardless of where the vehicle is being repaired. To date, I haven’t heard of a company that forces you to use their repairer, in order to have access to the courtesy car. The best advice we can give is to ask these questions, when either getting your first quote, or when asking your agent what options and/ or restrictions are applied to the policy that you are considering. Remember that cheapest is not always best. In these cases, you often do not find this out until something happens! As Martin Lewis would say, read the small print!

School starts in Millersville right at the beginning of September. This year, the residents of Forest Street each have a child starting a new grade. The interesting part is that no one on Forest Street is starting in the same grade. Several of the kids have parents that get very excited over a new school year and feel compelled to take pictures of their children on the first day. The kids have finally convinced their parents that going into the school with them on the first day is no longer acceptable, but some of the parents still insist on driving them to school that morning. Determine the full name of each child, the street number for their home, the grade that each is starting, and whether they rode the bus to school or their parents drove them. 1. George didn’t live at 26 Forest Street and he didn’t start 4th grade. The one whose last name was Branch was starting 5th grade. 2. The two kids who rode the bus to school were the boy who lived at 22 Forest Street and the one who was started 5th grade. 3. Mark Sylvester didn’t live at 27 Forest Street but his parents drove him to school. 4. George’s last name wasn’t Minoch. Susan’s last name wasn’t Branch. 5. The kid who started 7th grade has a last name of Perch. Mark didn’t start 4th grade. 6. The kid who lived at 23 Forest Street rode the bus. Emily wasn’t starting 6th grade.

A good new year win for Tenerife!

CD Tenerife

The Three Kings came early for CD Tenerife, with a dominant performance against Elche, that saw them have 20 shots in a match that was the Suso show, from start to finish.

He made history starting this match, as he entered the “Top 10” of appearances with 367, and counting, for Tenerife, in all competitions. When the match started, it was obvious that the Christmas break had been beneficial for Oltras men, as they started as brightly as they have all season, and were on the attack, straight away. It was also obvious that Elche were a yard off the pace, and the first half was a stop-start affair, with 24 fouls committed in total. Tenerife went ahead in the 23rd minute, thanks to a precise pass across goal from Montañés. A lovely shot from Malbasic wrong-footed Elche keeper Francis, and nestled nicely in the corner for a goal, making it 1-0 to the home team, and sending the blanquiazul into hysteria. Malbasic’s goal opened the game, and both teams had chances. Dani was called into action for CDT, to save a header from Elche No 9 Benja, in the 28th minute, and Francis had to do the same from Alberto, six minutes later. Just before half-time, Tenerife conceded an absurd penalty, when a long shot from Manu hit Alberto on the hand, which he could have quite easily avoided, because the ball wasn’t anywhere near on target. Xavi Torres didn’t squander his chance, and put Elche right back in the game, easily slotting past Dani to make it 1-1, after 44 minutes. Tenerife must have been disappointed to go into the break level, instead of leading, but the positivity they started the second half with didn’t reflect that at all. They had two great chances in the first two minutes of the half, as that man Suso broke down the right, and ran rings

around the Elche defence. His first run led to a spectacular overhead kick from Naranjo, and the second a

brilliant shot by Milla, both only stopped by the woodwork, saving Elche. In fact, Tenerife had five,

clear-cut chances in the 15 minutes, leaving Elche wondering what was going on. The breakthrough came

with the sixth on 60 minutes, as Jorge rose higher than the rest, and nodded a corner from Milla straight past Francis, to make it 2-1 to CDT, with half an hour to play. The rest of the second half was much the same, with Tenerife making the play, and Elche on the back foot. Although they didn’t score again, Oltra closed up CDT’s defence with Carlos Ruiz, and was happy to take three valuable points, much to the delight of the home fans. They have had two good results before and after Christmas, at home, with a 1-1 draw against league leaders Granada, and now a convincing win against Elche, but Tenerife are on the road again this weekend, with a tricky trip to Oviedo, who are also coming off the back of a win and a draw, and need to start beating the mid-table teams. Can Oltras men go on a run and move up the table? If they play like these last two matches - yes, they definitely can.

Suters carry on cruising! SUTERS 20:30 Crew started off the New Year as they finished 2018, cruising to an 8-0 victory over Scooters ‘A’.

One of their main rivals for silverware had their first setback of the season, as Gaffers hosted The Loch-In ‘A’, and consistent finishing by the visitors, Dave’s 110 and Kev’s 107 along with Telf’s 180, led to a 7-1 score for The Loch-In ‘A’. Picasso’s, who welcomed The Pub, were beaten 6-2 by the in-form visitors, whose Mitch chalked up a maximum. Mad Hatters, at home against Legends, also found themselves on the

wrong end of a 6-2 result. But the food made up for everything! Ourplace Breakaways found their form at home against Clouseau’s, recording a fine 6-2 win. But a nail-biter was staged at Palms Pool Bar, where visitors Sandys found Alan on top of his game, with another 180. But the away team stayed strong, and took the trebles for a 5-3 success. Emerald Lounge had their best win of the season, hosting Sundowners and running out comfortable 7-1 winners. Ourplace Playgirls, as always, welcomed Emerald Lounge ‘B’ with open arms. But the visitors showed little mercy, as they won 6-2 to maintain their title challenge. Naughty Nautas trav-

A touch of class for Rangers at the TTT RANGERS arrived in Tenerife on Monday for a six-day, warm-weather, training visit, to get their mid-season training camp underway at the renowned Tenerife Top Training centre (TTT) in La Caleta.

Spongebob Squarepants was the star of the show at the kids’ club that evening, appearing at the luxury Tenerife hotel in which the Scottish press, covering Rangers’ trip, are staying. The players were put through their paces in the cool of the evening, under the floodlights in La Caleta. And when new-signing Steven Davis joined his team-mates for the first time, the players stood in a circle and applauded the midfielder as he walked on to the training pitch. It was a sign of the regard in which the on-loan Southampton man is held, while another new recruit, former England striker Jermain Defoe, trained for the first time on Tuesday after arriving the previous day.
