Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice

T

The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond

Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013

The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. Innocent passer-by dumped bag in bin

25th January 2019 - 31st January 2019

Cont. from Front

They were found in a bag on a Lanzarote beach on 5th January, a couple of days before her husband, Raul Diaz, reported her missing to the police. The bag was picked up by a passer-by, and, not knowing what was inside, took it to a nearby rubbish container. The incident was not reported to the police at the time, because the person assumed it was full of rubbish. In fact, police were informed about the findings when a picture of Romina’s face was published, days later. As soon as the Guardia Civil officers learned of the find, they took every opportunity to locate the gruesome discovery. The investigation led officers to a rubbish dump in Costa Tegueste, where the containers are emptied. And there was a meticulous

search for the bag, until it was discovered. The contents were sent to the court’s forensic team in Arrecife, to determine whether the parts were human or animal. If they are human, a DNA sample will be taken to confirm who the parts belonged to. The Guardia Civil advised, last Wednesday, that, along with other investigations related to the case, the courts sent Romina’s husband, Raul DC, to prison without bail. That was because the High Court judge was sure of his guilt, on top of his suspected crimes of domestic violence, along with murder accusations against Romina’s husband. Yet Raul DC maintained that he was riddled with drugs when he arrived home on New Year’s Eve. He said he panicked because of his condition, and threw her body in the sea.

Missing Jennifer found

JENNIFER Judith Gonzalez Munez, who disappeared on 20th July 2018 in La Laguna, has been found, in good health. The SOS Desaparecidos organisation issued an alert message on its Twitter account, dropping the search for the 28-year-old.

She was last seen in La Cuesta, and was reported missing by her mother. She filed the report after speaking with many of her colleagues and friends about her whereabouts, because she had begun a new relationship.

Heartbreaking death of a baby TRAGICALLY, a sixmonth-old baby died last Tuesday afternoon while at a Santa Cruz nursery in Calle Castro, at the top of the Rambla. An emergency call was made from the nursery, just before midday, requesting help because a baby appeared to be lifeless. The first person to arrive was a local policeman on his motorbike, who checked the baby for vital signs, immediately. He ascertained that the infant wasn’t breathing, and that its heart had stopped, so he began giving the baby basic CPR. The officer alerted his colleagues about the

situation, in preparation for a possible trip to hospital. An ambulance arrived at the nursery rapidly, and its medical team continued trying to resuscitate the little tot. But, sadly, the doctor could only confirm the baby’s death. The baby was born on 31st July, 2018. National Police opened an investigation

from the moment the infant passed away, and began questioning the nursery staff about the circumstances surrounding the death. The baby’s body has been taken to the Institute of legal medicine for a full autopsy, to determine the cause of death, which is normal procedure given the circumstances.

30kg of hashish found on beach LOCAL Police in Fuerteventura were, last weekend, tipped off about a bale of hashish, weighing 30kg or even more, on a beach.

It was discovered on Caleta Corcho beach by a member of the public, who informed the Local Police

from the village of Antigua, Domingo Fránquiz. The cops were not 100% sure about what they had stumbled on, but they had their suspicions and informed the Guardia Civil. The police, who were patrolling the seafront, walked to relevant area to investigate, and made the Guardia aware of their extraordinary find. Guardia officers have

instigated an investigation about how the hash bale ended up where it did. Local police, from Antigua, Domingo Fránquiz, said the cops would maintain round-the-clock surveillance as a preventive measure against possible criminal acts. They have also offered support and help for residents and tourists alike, if needed.

A year to enjoy for Adeje’s tourists and residents alike ADEJE, and Costa Adeje, the borough’s tourism “label”, had a busy day at Fitur, the Spanish tourism trade fair taking place in Madrid this week.

Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, said they were engaged in the work needed to give the world’s travel professionals the information and incentive to sell the destination. He added: “We want to advance and generate opportunities for all our residents in Adeje, thanks to the sector that sustains us, and our initiatives as a borough and an economy.” Adeje, among three of Spain’s destinations with the highest overnight stays, has stated, often, that the objective wasn’t to bring more tourists, but to give those already visiting the borough a better-quality experience during their stay. “We offer better value for money, with the same number of visitors,” said the Mayor. “And one of the key tools is to make agencies aware of the different, and less well-known things, in Adeje. “Sun and sea are indispensable for any tourist visiting Costa Adeje and the Canaries, which are our great strengths. But there needs to be added value on offer… factors that make the difference.” He added: “This is why, this

year, we are emphasising cultural promotions, the celebration of our festivals, and our heritage, which are all part of the richness of Adeje and its people.” Rodríguez Fraga, accompanied by the borough’s Tourism and Cultural, and Sport Councillors, Ermitas Moreira and Adolfo Alonso, respectively, said the idea was to underline how culture adds value to the tourism offer, and also to demonstrate how the economic motor that is tourism “funds our culture offer, protects our heritage, and reinforces the work we do throughout the year,

El Medano beach reopens

EL Medano beach has reopened after being closed by Granadilla Council since Monday, because high levels of E-coli had been detected. The bacteria, which lives in the gut and can cause severe diarrhoea, was detected in the sea, after what appeared to be a small spillage. Analysis were taken from the waters around the

coast by health inspectors, and the samples showed that the bacteria now were at a respectably-safe level. But Jacobe Perez, who works in the Public Safety department at Granadilla Council, said it would continue to test the water, in addition to having regular inspections to try to verify where the contamination came from.

for our residents and visitors alike”. The Councillors said there were already 40 important activities planned this year, for tourists and residents, both sporting and cultural. These include the Adeje Motor Rally, and the Il Divo concert (June 15th), as well as the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra concerts, the latter with tenors Celso Albelo and Javier Camarena. The Councillors also mentioned events planned in the Hard Rock Hotel, the Easter Good Friday Passion and Costa

Adeje’s Fashion Beach. “These are just a few examples of the offer that includes folklore, jazz, gospel, our traditional riches, crafts, fashion, beaches and beach clubs,” said Cllr Moreira. Carlos Marín, the only Spanish member of Il Divo, was alongside the Adeje Mayor, announcing details of their Adeje concert. Promotor David Navarro told the press that tickets are already on sale and were “selling well”, but can still be bought online, via www. mastaquilla.com and in El Corte Inglés.

The concert, managed by DN7 Events, in collaboration with the Adeje Council, will be in Golf Costa Adeje. The Il Divo quartet offer a mix of opera and songs from different musical genres, and are considered an iconic “crossover” musical foursome, comprising Carlos, Swiss Urs Buhler, Frenchman Sebastien Izambard and David Miller, from the US. They have sold millions of records since forming in 2003. And their Adeje concert, “Timeless 15th Anniversary”, brings together songs of love and romance over the ages.

Drug mules captured

A TOTAL of 19 people, all arrested by National Police, have been charged with being involved in a drug organisation of criminals.

The arrests were made possible via a police operation to dismantle a group, who travelled between Barcelona and the Canary Islands, transporting drugs by swallowing bags of them. The courts are now dealing with the case, and all but three of the 19 drug mules were ordered to prison. Two of them were believed to be organisation bosses, who led the group from Barcelona.

In fact, the police confiscated 3.4kg of cocaine in the city, during the build-up to the arrests. Those held are all aged between 29 and 41, with most of them having a police record. They were detained for being part of a network, using people to transport drugs, between Barcelona and the Canaries. During their investigation, police were able to determine each member’s degree of involvement within the organisation, which led them to the Barcelona’s ringleaders. Police conducted searches in Barcelona as well as in Antigua, Puerto del Rosario and Corralejos, where they not only found cocaine, but also a sum of €21,800, which was confiscated.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria rattled by an intense quake THE Canary Islands were hit by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake last Friday morning, at 6.36, according to reports from the National Geographic Institute.

The IGN reported a seismic movement, located almost exactly in the middle between Gran Canaria and Tenerife, at a depth of five kilometres. which was felt in eight Tenerife municipalities and two, in Gran Canaria. Intense tremors were felt in Galdar and Agaete, both in Gran Canaria, while the Tenerife areas of Candelaria, Granadilla de Abona, Tegueste, La Laguna, Güimar and La Orotava were awoken by the quake. Santa Cruz, Tenerife and Arafo also felt the effects, but with less intensity, and the quake lasted under a minute. According the National Geographic Institute’s records, the earthquake reached a peak magnitude of 4.7 within 10 seconds of starting. Another three small quakes were detected in the same area at a force of between 1.7 and 1.9. One person wrote: “Earthquake in the centre of Tenerife!”, while another added: “Has there been an earthquake on Tenerife? What a scare!” Involcan, a Canary volcanology institute, said that earthquakes like

these had happened previously, between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, adding: “It is normal that they register now and in the future.” A statement read: “All the stations of the Canary Seismic Network (C7) located in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, El Hierro and Lanzarote, have registered the magnitude 4.2 earthquake, which occurred between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, today. “The tectonic activity, related to the fault between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, is the most probable cause of this earthquake. “And earthquakes of this magnitude have been recorded in the recent past between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, such as the magnitude 5.2 which occurred on 9th May 1989.

after spending a cold night in the park, The bike-rider became disorientated after taking the wrong route, but an emergency call was made from the individual just before midnight on Wednesday, and a small search-party was started by the Protection Civil and the Local police. They began by searching

the El Cerado ravine, and friends of the cyclist were concerned enough to get involved in the search. There was talk of a helicopter rescue, but the terrain was not suitable for aircraft to conduct an air search at night. But, fortunately, the firemen finally came across the cyclist, to his and their relief.

NEWS IN BRIEF New security dream to come true for El Fraile Norwegian airline cost-cutters

IN its latest attempt to save money, low-cost carrier Norwegian Air is axing a number of routes and closing six crew bases, including one in Tenerife. The closures do not mean flights will stop going to the destinations, but there will no longer be local flight and cabin crew based there. “The company has reached a point where it needs to make necessary adjustments to its route portfolio,” said Helga Bollmann Leknes, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer. As well as Tenerife, the closures include Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria in Spain, as well as Providence (Rhode Island) and Stewart (New York). The airline is also closing Rome’s 737 base, but it will maintain a base there. As well as the closures, Norwegian are cutting frequencies to six European short-haul routes, including those between Palma and Copenhagen, from Rome to Helsinki and from Tenerife North to Madrid.

Port’s spitting cobra spotted

WORKERS spotted a cobra inside one of the cargo terminals at Algeciras port, in the Cadiz province. of Cádiz. And the deadly reptile prompted port authorities to shut down part of a container yard. The area has since gone back to normal after officers from the Guardia Civil’s nature protection service, Seprona, captured it. And although a vet has yet to confirm it, the reptile is said to be a black-necked spitting cobra (Naja nigricollis). It is considered an aggressive species, with a venomous bite.

‘Unicorn’ on the rampage

Arona Mayor José Julián Mena and Canarian delegate Elena Máñez meet the forces

EL Fraile’s first official police station, to be known as a security station, will be up and running within a month.

The new premises, near the health and cultural centres, in Calle San Sebastian de La Gomera, will meet the longstanding demand for more police presence. From next month, there should be a vast public-safety improvement for residents and visitors alike, thanks to the presence of Local Police

and Guardia Civil, as well as the Canarian Police. The news just gets better, because the work and installations on the new premises will begin next week. A meeting was held in El Fraile last September; between Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, and Elena Máñez, a Canarian Government delegate. Jointly, they came up with an idea for more policing in the area, and, from this, they agreed on a station with local safety a fundamental factor. The premises will be staffed by Local Police, and the

Guardia Civil will also be present, ready to respond to any demands in or around El Fraile. There, the population exceeds 10,000 inhabitants, which is more than double the number of residents in the Las Galletas coastal town, under one kilometre away. El Fraile’s new security station, when built, will be accessible from the street and the cultural centre. It will occupy 100sq/m, to include meeting and waiting rooms, as well as a reception and three offices.

from the woman’s bank account, The thief helped herself to €2,511 from the victim’s account, but the cops were able to identify the thief easily, because the unscrupulous woman was close to her victim. She had complete power of attorney, including all the necessary account numbers, so robbing the patient was easy for her. The victim had told the police

she had been threatened by the thief for a while, because she threatened to revoke her power of attorney. That’s why, she believes, the victim took advantage by stealing money from her accounts. The thief’s identity has not yet been revealed, but she has been arrested and charged with fraud. Both her, and the police reports, will be handed over to Gran Canaria’s judicial authorities.

Easy for woman, 61, to steal a patients’ €2,500

A MAN dressed as a unicorn has been arrested on suspicion of robbing an IT store in Malaga city. And police believe he is linked to another eight car and shop robberies in the city, after breaking windows to steal goods in public. The 20-year-old Spaniard, whose identity has not been revealed, was wearing a hood, emulating the mythical creature, when he stole from the window display. National Police said the youngster also robbed the computer shop on Camino de Suarez on 9th January, during the night. He took a dozen mobile phones and €700 in cash. He is also suspected to have stolen a computer, a tablet and cosmetic products from an osteopathy shop.

A WOMAN, aged 61, has been arrested by National Police in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, after stealing more than €2,500 from a hospitalised patient.

An investigation began after a family member of the patient had reported unusual movements, mainly unauthorised withdrawals,

Camels, horses and donkeys are all there for San Sebastian

Animals and people, in their thousands, salute patron saint

Thieves won’t ignore café, despite nearby cop station

ADEJE’S SAN Sebastián was a celebration of social harmony, a patron saint, and tradition and friendship last Sunday, with as many as 10,000 people in attendance throughout the morning and afternoon.

The celebrations, stretching back over five centuries, take place in La Caleta and the La Enremada beach, where 110 riders and horses, as well as camels, donkeys, sheep, goats, dogs and cats, were also taking part. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, said: “This is a time and place for remembering the importance of togetherness

and solidarity. “We come together with our animals and remember the importance of sharing peace, during the celebrations of what is one of the oldest and most significant celebrations, not just in Adeje but in Tenerife.” Following midday mass, sung

by the Santa Úrsula parish choir, the statue of San Sebastián left the church and was carried to the sea, where horses and their riders also bathed. The procession then returned to the square for the traditional blessing of the animals.

THE owner of a café in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz is at his wit’s end, because there have been at least three attempted break-ins during a six-day period… yet it is just 50 metres away from the police station! The first one saw thieves gaining entry, but the other efforts failed because the vandals, despite using more force, were unable to access the premises. The Costa Verde café is situated in Calle Lepanto, and the first raid happened on 7th January. Thieves forced their way in through a side door, escaping with the till’s takings, as well as the slot-machine cash. They even helped themselves to the staff’s tips. Five days later, another set of thieves, presumably, had a crack at breaking in, but failed to get in through the side door. They returned the following night in the early hours, and this time they attempted to get into the cafeteria

through its main, front door, with no success. The owner has made a police report about the first break-in and the second attempt. But he really is at a loss, and has no idea what to do next to reinforced his property. What makes matters even worse, he says, is that the café is so close to the police station.

Amigos de Gillian Banks so proud to receive award

RECENTLY, the Amigos de Gillian Banks charity was awarded the Certificate of Granadilla by the Mayor, Jose Domingo Regalado, and Head of Social Services, Maria de la O Gasper Gonzalez, for all the help and support they give to the children and families in the municipality, through their charity work.

Thieving foursome are caught by slick officers THREE men and one woman, all with police records, and all linked to several crimes in Santa Cruz, La Laguna and Güimar, have been arrested by the National Police.

One of the men is the ringleader, connected to the others individually, in the three municipalities. He is being investigated for breaking and entering six establishments, along with eight cases of car theft, dating back to December last year. The agents spotted a pattern, in that a vehicle went missing, stolen by someone using a

blunt instrument, and then a crime was carried out in a commercial establishment, involving the same vehicle. Eventually, their investigations focused on one individual, around who the others revolved. After identifying all those involved, the National Police raided the main suspect’s house in Santa Cruz. They found, among other effects, a ski mask, various tools, three smart phones, and a motorcycle used in a getaway. After the arrests, the detainees, together with the report prepared by the National Police, were placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities.

The ceremony, held at the Council’s Social Services building, was also attended by all the staff and children from the Guaidyl Centre, with whom the charity works, on a weekly basis. The charity has a passion for helping children who need assistance and support in life, and, over the years, has a great track record for providing resources, equipment, food and clothing for them, liaising with the centre’s staff. The charity doesn’t simply hand over money; they talk to the staff and find out what the children need at that point in their lives, and this makes the big difference to how the charity works. During the last year, they have provided school books, uniforms, computers and educational resources for the centre, as well as English teachers, every week, to enhance the children’s employment chances. At Christmas and Easter they provide food parcels for all the families in the centre, to ensure that the children eat properly while it is closed for the holidays. They have organised visits to Santa Cruz, providing each child

with €15 to buy a present for themselves and the Three Kings, also arranging local visits, for pleasure and education. They run planting projects to teach the children how to grow food and feed themselves, and become less dependent on other people. Something is happening all the time at the centre, to help support the staff and children, on top of the fundraising activities and donations, from around the island. People and companies are very supportive, and provide opportunities for funds to be raised from quizzes or raffles, bag-packing in Iceland, and donations, with restaurants holding events to raise funds and support, in Los Gigantes and Los Cristianos. The charity also supports El Valito in El Fraile with similar activities, and also runs joint visits and events for both groups of children. Over the year, the charity has brought performers from England to perform shows and raise funds, and has also partnered with more local organisations, such as the Rotary Club in Tenerife South, jointly raising €21,500 at a

Gala Dinner in November. Future projects include visits in February from Conductive Music, a company specialising in Science and Music projects, who will teach in the centres about making pianos from vegetables and fruit, and the underlying scientific principles behind it all. Italian Doctor of Music, Enrico Bertelli, will lead the sessions, and combine the educational theories with the children’s enjoyment. Swimming lessons will be provided for all the children in the centre, with weekly sessions being held in the local swimming pool. Swimming costumes will be provided for all the children, to enable them to participate. The charity continues to strive for the children, and is developing programmes to ensure that, when they leave the centre, employment opportunities are available for them, and they are suitably prepared for the change. We adopt the positive messages portrayed by the Director of Guaidyl, Paco Rodriguez, and encourage the children to make changes, positively, involving their families, to develop their futures.

WhatsApp’s bid to control spam fully VICTORIA Grand, WhatsApp’s Vice-President of policy and communications, says that, from Monday, the company’s messenger services, now owned by Facebook, will limit the volume of messages which can be forwarded at any one time, in an attempt to control spam. With WhatsApp, previously, the user could forward as many as 20 messages at a time, individually, or to selected groups. But after a spread of rumours on social media, which really antagonised followers, the new limit has been launched and used in India since July 2018. WhatsApp, with around 1,500

The app’s end-to-end encryption allows hundreds of users, in groups, to exchange texts, photos and videos, out of reach from its independent data sources. Carl Woog, WhatsApp communications chief, informed Reuters that, on Monday, WhatsApp will release an update, to activate the new limit of resends. Android users will receive the update first, followed by users of Apple IOS, its mobile operating system.

British drivers should get a Spanish licence

BRITISH expat drivers in Spain have been urged to get a Spanish driving licence as soon as possible, in case of a no-deal Brexit.

Failure to do so, according to the UK government, could mean they will have to pass a test after the UK leaves the EU, on 29th March. The Government also said that those living in the UK, who want to drive in the EU after 29th March, might need an international driving permit (IDP). British insurers AA estimated as many as half-a-million expats living in France and Spain would have to take a new test if they had not exchanged their licence, should there be no deal. The guidance, released last Monday, said: “In the event that there is no EU exit deal,

you may have to pass a driving test in the EU country you live in, to be able to carry on driving there. “You should consider exchanging your UK driving licence for an EU driving licence as soon as possible. Increased demand may lead to longer processing times and delays to exchanging driving licences, the closer it is to 29th March.” Brits would be able to have a British licence again if they went back to the UK, but international permits might be obligatory for Brits travelling to the EU post-Brexit. They cost around €6 and are available at selected post offices in Britain.

Parque Foundation helps to preserve a rare species

MORE than 8,000 kilometres separate the Canary Islands from Colombia, yet the Yellow-eared Parrot has a vital link with the Archipelago. That’s because the conservation work, carried out by Loro Parque Foundation to protect the species, has contributed to its successful recovery. The Foundation’s participation in the project to save the Yellow-eared Parrot, together with the ProAves Foundation of Colombia, has been fundamental in the wild population of these birds multiplying and reaching record numbers. The story marking their survival began in the mid-1990s, when the Loro Parque Foundation supported the protection of the last 20 birds in Ecuador. In 1988, these birds had disappeared and it was feared that the species had become completely extinct. However, in the same year, the Ognorhynchus project began, aiming to ensure the survival of the species, and its habitat, in the Colombian Andes. After a year-long search, a

population of 81 individuals was found in the central Andes, in the community of Roncesvalles. And, in January, 2001, a second population of 63 individuals appeared in the foothills of the western Andes in Jardín, in the Department of Antioquia. In the years since the collaboration began, the Foundation has been the principal architect of an initiative which may become the most successful in all of South America. In fact, such has been the recovery rate that in 2010, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reduced the Yellow-eared Parrot’s threat category from “critically endangered” to “endangered”. This bird has a close relationship with wax palms, Colom-

bia’s national tree, which is also threatened by grazing cattle, and by its indiscriminate use of serving the Palm Sunday celebrations. Years of research into habitat use, diet, distribution, and reproductive behaviour, have provided a solid foundation on threats to the species and the wax palm, which, thus, sparked a global conservation action plan. Among the different initiatives implemented within the framework of this project, they were also able to count on the collaboration of the Vatican. In spite of the roots of this religious tradition, the close collaboration of the Church, together with a good educational programme, have made it possible today for everyone to use other alternatives.

A MAJOR fraud trial, which could “shed light” on the gangland murder of crime kingpin John “Goldfinger” Palmer, began in Spain last Monday.

Ten associates of Palmer, once believed to be Britain’s richest criminal, are charged with fraud offences in connection with his Tenerife timeshare racket, which is believed to have netted him up to £300m. The suspects include his partner, Christina Ketley, who shared the £800,000 Essex home where he was shot dead in the garden in June 2015. Palmer was charged with fraud, money-laundering and firearms offences, alongside the other10 in May 2015, just weeks before his assassination. The Madrid trial centres on the scam, which continued to fleece customers, even while Palmer was serving eight years in prison. He had been convicted in 2001 of fraud charges, in connection with the timeshare con. Palmer was alleged to have continued to run the crime empire with the other defendants, selling nonexistent timeshares in holiday apartments from inside Long Lartin prison, in South Littleton,

Fraud trial could discover just who shot ‘Goldfinger’

Worcestershire. And Ketley was said to have managed proceedings on his behalf. Palmer’s alleged right-hand man, 52-year-old Richard Anthony Cashman, and one of his nephews, Darren John Morris, are also charged with fraud offences. Before his death, Palmer was facing up to 15 years in prison. He was first arrested in Spain in 2007, but not charged until 2015. The Spanish indictment also alleged that a 9mm Zastava pistol, found during a Tenerife raid, belonged to him. It says that Palmer’s associates in Spain had their phones tapped, and that the kingpin was taped giving them, including Morris, orders from his British prison cell. Christina Ketley is also facing fraud charges over John Palmer’s timeshare empire. Prosecutors want Ketley and Cashman, jailed for two years each for criminal association, ordered to spend two more

years inside for moneylaundering, and a further six for fraud. Palmer acquired his “Goldfinger” nickname after being acquitted of smelting gold bars, stolen in the notorious 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery. His killer stalked him through a small hole, made in the victim’s garden fence,

before jumping over and firing six bullets from a silenced revolver. That area of the garden was not covered by CCTV, although five of the six bullets were found, but there was no other forensic evidence. Essex Police’s main line of inquiry is that someone connected to the trial may have wanted him out

of the way. There were suspicions among the criminal underworld, after he had been charged with the offences, that he might have been about to turn “supergrass”. Last July, Ketley put up a £100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his murderer. At the time, lead investigator DCI Stephen Jennings said: “Before Mr Palmer’s death, and during the course of this investigation, there has been lots of speculation about his connections to organised criminals, specific, high-profile crimes, suggestions that he was a police informant, and further speculation that charges brought against him in Tenerife were about to be dropped. “The key hypothesis is around John Palmer being due to stand trial in Spain. That trial is still to go ahead, and because of the timing when that first went out, I believe it is why John was killed. “That makes sense and that is what the evidence and intelligence is telling us. John was due to fly out to Spain just days after he was killed.” The officer added: “Active inquiries in and around Palmer, and the upcoming trial in Spain, were underway to see if anyone involved in the case would have benefited from his death.”

Live like a Duke... shop ‘til you drop! A NEW commercial centre opened its doors on 30th November 2018, and the manager, Katerina Krasnevskaya, has given some interesting details about this completely-renovated and unique shopping environment, which is warm and welcoming.

What does “Be a Duke” mean? Duque (Spanish), Herzog (German), Knyaz (Russian) is, normally, a British nobleman holding the highest hereditary title outside the royal family, ranking immediately below a Prince and above a Marquis; a member of the highest rank of the British peerage and European aristocracy. Also, the title Dux survived in the Eastern Roman Empire, where it was used in several contexts, signifying a rank equivalent to a Captain or General. Here in Tenerife, we take Duque to mean the luxurious district in the South of the island, with Playa del Duque being the best beach in Costa Adeje. It is a high-class resort, and

has always been highly-rated for offering the best service and living conditions, with top-class luxury in a beachfront setting. So “Be a Duke” is a special claim, inviting you to feel special, 365 days a year. So Playa del Duque means Beach of the Duke? Of course, and it was one of the first beaches to be

awarded the Blue Flag for its cleanliness. Originally, it was named after the Casa del Duque, the castle that everyone can see from the coastline. This majestic mansion was built for Duke Abrants in 1936, and was supposed to receive King Alfonso XIII, following the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, to

go into exile with all his family. The king didn’t come, and he settled in Rome, instead. Does the commercial centre have its own family history? This is a history of family values and traditions, the continuity of three generations. Nowadays, the offspring of the García Rozas family are recreating the dream of their father, who, unfortunately, didn’t realise it, because of his early death. The idea was to renovate the centre that was built by their grandfather. Do you also have a title? I gained the crown of Dama Tropicana in 2017. It was a thrilling competition during the annual International Charity Festival, supported by the local Arona authorities, and held at Infanta Leonor stage in Los Cristianos. So the Duke theme seems attractive to me. Is that why you started being a director here? Well, I have always been looking forward to a job like this, and to be able to use my personal experience in sales, fashion, blogging and marketing. It’s a great transformation for me. Besides, I love fashion like almost every woman! So I’m happy to be a representative of The Duke Shops. Tell us more about this new commercial centre. The Duke Shops is a new

retail space, established in a different way, and it’s not just a place to connect consumers with products. They can engage with brands, experiences, entertainment and service providers. We were choosing the operators with the original concept-store projects, and certainly with the successful experience on the market. Each brand needs to be modern, open to a wide target, and affordable, but with the high quality. There is a new range of boutiques which are not typical for the mass-market traditions of the island. For example, three brands, Armani Exchange, Ted Baker and Poden & Cool, are entering the island for the first time. Also, we will offer a comfortable food court on the upper floor with crafted food, so-called “artesanal” in Spanish. Finding good restaurants is very important to us. We would like to see the service models where the food served is still of the highest standard, but where service time rivals that of traditional “fast-food” outlets. So you are very welcome to The Duke Shops, especially now during the sales! Be smart! We are waiting for you!

‘Ghost plane’ riddle of Madrid’s airport SOMEONE parked an aeroplane at Madrid’s Adolfo Suárez Barajas airport years ago, and left it there, after it had been connected to a series of failed businesses.

The McDonnel Douglas MD87 aircraft, which is displaying its lengthy years of inactivity, has been sealed off on the airfield of Madrid’s largest international airport. And, like a ghost made of aluminium, copper and titanium, it hasn`t moved for years. To discover if anyone wanted to claim it, Airport Director Elena Mayoral signed a notice last Friday in the Official State Gazette (BOE), in which she reported the aircraft, its licence plate EC KRV, and its “obvious state of abandonment”. When a plane is stationed at an airport for an extended period, and displays signs of having been abandoned, the Aircraft Registration Registry of Spain’s Air Security Agency (AESA) and the Central Property Registry, are commissioned to investigate whether there has been a change of ownership, and to locate the last registered owner, according to Spanish news agency EFE. The last registered owner is sent an official request, to pay the sum of the existing debt for the prolonged parking fee. If it is not paid,

procedures are initiated with the Spanish Tax Agency. These proceedings continue until the sum is paid, voluntarily, or the Tax Agency begins enforced collection procedures. If the owner does not respond, or if it is discovered that he/she has disappeared, in the case of death without heirs, liquidation or company closure, three notices are published in the BOE for three consecutive months. Each notice indicates the aircraft registration, the model and the brand, as well as its state of abandonment. Then, once a year has passed since the last notice published, the airplane is considered abandoned, legally, and can be offered

for public auction. According to Spanish airport authority AENA, the McDonnell Douglas MD87 is currently the only abandoned aircraft at Barajas airport. In 1990, the airplane flew for the first time under the Iberia banner, according to online magazine Preferente.com. And, 18 years later, it was acquired by Pronair, a charter airline, based at Albacete, in Castilla-La Mancha. But the airline, which was flying regularly to China at one point, closed down in just a year, because of the increase in fuel prices, as well as the 2008 financial crisis. Two years later, it was acquired by Saicus Air, a Spanish airline based in

Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands. The airline operated two aeroplanes from Madrid, and, until that point, it had been dedicated to transporting cargo. The plane was meant to fly passengers between Spain and the Republic of Guinea Bissau in West Africa. But it never flew for Saicus Air. Instead, it was rented to third parties, along with a cabin crew. Saicus Air had purchased the plane in July 2010, and, in December, it had also gone into liquidation. Its motors and the pilot-static system, in addition to the rest of its openings, were all sealed off. Since then, it has been awaiting a new owner… yet to appear!

Officers gave fish caught illegally to refuge centres

GUARDIA Civil officers from the Fiscal and Border Controls in Puerto de la Cruz, have issued 26 complaints to six Tenerife fishermen for not complying with fishing’s agricultural rules. The men were caught by surprise while spear-fishing illegally, as well as free diving in prohibited fishing areas, along the Tenerife coast, in Los Silos, La Playa del Apio, and also off the

coast in Jover, La Laguna. The Guardia, who confiscated octopus weighing 28kg, as well as 10kg of different types of fish, confiscated the haul, and distributed it across the island, to social kitchens and refuge centres. The six fishermen are waiting to be issued with their fines, which could cost them anything between €60 and €60,000.

Dodgy licences can’t trick cops OFFICERS from Arona’s Local Police have removed four illegal drivers from the roads, in the last few days, after spotting four, blatantlyfalse, driving licences. Last Friday, the cops stopped two drivers, and,

when asked to show their licences, they presented the officers with an Italian and Spanish licence, and both were noticeably false. Three days later, during a routine check, the cops came across another two false driving licences, this time from Belgium and the Ukraine. All four are awaiting court proceedings.

Two of them suffered considerable injuries, one being a 31-year-old man, whose upper arms were fractured severely. The other injured person was a 34-year-old woman, who had nasty facial injuries. She was taken, immediately, to the university hospital in Santa Cruz. Emergency ambulances were at the scene, rapidly, and the remining four people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment and observation.

Teenager’s painful trip

A TEENAGE boy, aged 15, injured himself while on a walking trip with his school at Santiago del Teide last Monday afternoon.

The emergency services were called on to assist the youngster, just before 1pm. The boy, who, along with his classmates, was enjoying the mountainous Ruta del Almendros walk, until he tripped and hurt his knee. He was in such pain that he couldn’t walk, and an ambulance, plus fire fighters, were dispatched to help him. After treatment, the youth was stabilised by medics, and the ambulance team transferred him to a local hospital for further treatment.

Tile-thrower was aiming to steal store’s jewellery A MAN, aged around 30, has been arrested and charged with breaking into a jewellery shop at La Laguna’s Finca España, and causing damage.

Just before 11.30am on Tuesday, the man walked into the shop and began throwing heavy tiles at the showcase cabinets, containing silver items. He also threw tiles at the windows, shattering the glass everywhere, and, in the process, hitting himself on the head, causing several cuts. But he was stopped in his tracks by the shop owner. He had been working at the back of the premises, when he heard the commotion, coming from the front of the shop. He ran to investigate, and caught the man by surprise, trying to get away from the premises with two trays of jewellery in his hands. The shop boss stopped the thief in his tracks by jumping on his back, bringing him to his knees, retrieving the two trays of silver in the process. The police were called immediately, and, upon arrival, they detained the would-be thief. But as they

made the arrest, the cops noticed that he was clearly under the influence of some type of drug. An ambulance was summoned, and he was taken to the University Hospital for observation by two officers. Police have yet to release the man’s name, but he couldn’t have been more than 30, and he was not recognised by the area’s residents. Jesús Melián, a neighbour from Finca España, said that on Tuesday, at around 10am, he alerted shopkeepers in the vicinity about two strangers, who were simply floating around the area. He also described them to other shopkeepers, as well as advising the retailers that they were acting suspiciously. Melián said one of the individuals was carrying a red back-pack, which was used to carry small rocks and broken tiles.

THE boss of a Puerto Banús-based nightclub chain has died in a hail of bullets in Marbella.

The 49-year-old entrepreneur, named as Marco Yaqout, appears to be the latest victim of “settling of scores” murders, which have struck the Costa del Sol in the past few months. Marco, a Spanish businessman of Moroccan origin, owned at least five nightclubs in Puerto Banús, as well as bars, restaurants and discotheques. He was shot while in his luxurious Bentley at 3.30am on Monday, outside his luxury villa in the San Pedro Alcántara area of Marbella. According to investigators, Marco was surprised by at least one gunman, thought to have been in hiding behind a wheelie bin, waiting for him to come home. As he pulled into the garage of his home, he was confronted by the hitman, who fired 20 shots, shooting him 12 times. The assassin then made his escape down the quiet, dark streets of the Las Petunias Urbanisation. Although Marco tried to escape through the passenger side, he was found slumped in the car by the National Police, who were

alerted by a 112 call from someone inside his house. Marco co-owned several bars and nightclubs with two partners in Puerto Banús, including the popular Linekers bar, and Tibu nightclub, which is a TOWIE favourite. So far, police have not, officially, named Marco, whose first name is believed to be Abdelhadi, and, so far, there have been no arrests. Video footage, obtained by Diario Sur, showed his black Bentley riddled with bullets. An acquaintance told the Mail Online: “He was one of three business partners, known as the men who ran

most of Banus. They were key players in the Banus nightlife scene with big links to the TOWIE crowd, and people like Professor Green and So Solid Crew have played at Tibu. “Everyone knew Marco, that’s why people have been stunned by this killing, because it takes it to another level. “If it is an escalation of what’s been going on, and someone is having a crack at the nightclub scene, then it’s very worrying.” The murder comes after 2018 endured one of the bloodiest years on the Costa Del Sol, adding up to 20 killings.

THE start of a new year is also the start of a new tax year in Spain, so what tax changes do we have in 2019?

2019 budget While Spain’s central government is debating the state budget for 2019, the local Canary Islands government has approved its budget for the year. And we have some good news in relation to income tax, and succession and gift tax. Income tax Two, regional, income-tax brackets have been reduced, from 9.5% to 9%, for income up to €12,450, and from 12% to 11.5%, for income between €12,450 and €17,707. These are just the regional half of the income tax, because they need to be added to the state rates, to reach the total rates we will pay in the Canary Islands for 2019 income. In 2018, the lowest two state rates were

25th January 2019 - 31st January 2019

Tax news for the Canary Islands 9.5% and 12%. The rest of the regional brackets remain the same (up to 24%, this top rate applying to income over €90,000), and they all need to be added to the state rates to arrive at the final, applicable, income-tax rates for residents of the Canary Isles. The top state rate was 22.5% in 2018. Succession and gift tax In 2016, a 99.9% reduction for succession and gift tax was introduced for group I and II beneficiaries. This covers spouses, children and other descendants (grandchildren, etc), as well as parents and other ascendants, such as grandparents. For these groups, it applies to both inheritances and lifetime gifts. But, for gifts, the donation has to be completed, using a public deed. Now, though, from 1st January 2019, this 99.9% relief has been extended to Group III beneficiaries. Group III includes brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, cousins, and aunts and uncles. It can also include some in-laws and step-children, in certain

circumstances, but this has to be reviewed on a case-bycase basis. Note that for Group III beneficiaries, the relief only applies to inheritances; it does not apply to lifetime gifts. IGIC The special Canary Islands VAT, known as IGIC, has been reduced from 7% to 6.5%. Tax residency inspections It has always been important to understand the different Spanish criteria, which make you resident here for tax

purposes, and follow the rules correctly. We have been informed by different tax lawyers in Spain that they have recently seen an increase of inspections on tax residency, particularly for wealthier people. In some cases, the individuals were spending very few days in Spain, but the Spanish Tax Office argues that Spain is its centre of economic interests, which would make them Spanish tax residents. So, it is worth remembering

that tax residence in Spain is not just about counting days. Other factors may have a substantial relevance, depending on the circumstances, even if you spend much fewer than 183 days a year here. Blevins Franks have an in-depth knowledge of the Spanish tax rules, and how they interact with those in the UK. Please do not hesitate to contact us at www. blevinsfranks.com if you wish to clarify your tax position in Spain, or discuss effective taxplanning solutions for both Spain and the UK. UK and Irish investors seek €35m for ‘ghost’ properties FOLLOWING last year’s ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court, some 60,000 foreign investors, comprising a large section of Irish and British, are now able to claim money back from the banks, rather than property developers.

In fact, the Irish and Brits alone are claiming a staggering €35m for “ghostly” property investments in Spain, which they purchased, only to discover they were never built. So far, this is the total being claimed in hundreds of courts in Spain, after so-called “ghost developments” saw thousands sink their savings into off-plan property on the Costa del Sol. But after Spain’s real-estate bubble burst, after the financial crash of 2008, many of these schemes were left unfinished or never started. Now, though, after the Spanish Supreme Court’s ruling last year, around 60,000 foreign investors are able to

claim money back from the banks, rather than property developers. This landmark decision has lifted the hopes of thousands, who plunged money into homeless developments. Spain’s Irish legal-claims company, Reclaim, is representing 700 victims of the so-called off-plan property fraud. It has already retrieved over €22m for clients over so far, and is anticipating another mammoth year for pay-outs. Its owners, Ollie and John Reel, based in Armagh, were also victims of the offplan schemes, to the tune of almost €500,000. So far, they have been able

to claw back €70,000 of their investments, and they continue to battle for the rest. “It was a fantastic feeling to get that back, and it has been great to help others like us,” said Ollie. “The Spanish banks are reeling, because they know they will have to pay out millions more. “But they continue to contest the cases because they don’t want to appear to be giving in.” The pair, who have clients as far and wide as Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Dubai, were among 395 unlucky investors to sink money into off-plan developments at the Estepona Beach and Country Club.

8-metre waves a great threat to the Balearics MENORCA, in the Balearic Islands, will be hit by eight-metrehigh waves today (Friday), according to the Spanish weather agency AEMET.

The island has been placed on red alert, which means “extreme risk”, while neighbours Mallorca and Ibiza are on orange alert (“important risk”). The most extreme coastal weather began at around 10am yesterday (Thursday),

and was set to continue until 4pm. And there were orange warnings in place for all coastlines in the Balearics, at least from 7pm last night until midnight tomorrow. Andalucia also has orange warnings in place today in Almeria and Granada, which will change to yellow tomorrow, which indicates “risk”. Meanwhile, the northern Spanish provinces of Navarra and Lleida are on red alert for snow over the next couple of days.

The Last Survivors

Sunday 27th January, BBC2, 21.00

This landmark documentary gathers together the compelling and, in some cases, never-before-heard testimony from the last Holocaust survivors living in Britain today. Only a few thousand camp survivors made it to the safety of Britain after the war, and now only a couple of hundred remain. All of the extraordinary people in the film were children during the Holocaust, but now in their later years, they reflect on their experiences with a different perspective and understanding of how this past trauma permeates their present lives, and its significance. The film builds a picture of a small number of survivors in their day-to-day lives, giving an insight into why they hold on to particular memories of the Holocaust, and what concerns them most as they contemplate reaching the end of their lives. Over the course of a year, director Arthur Cary also follows these individuals on personal and profound journeys - including the story of a man who returns to Auschwitz with his daughter; a German-Jewish survivor addressing the Bundestag; and a man who returns to his German childhood hometown for the first time since 1946 to finally acknowledge the death of his little brother. Punctuating these scenes are compelling interviews with other survivors, who reveal shared feelings as well as their own thoughts and experiences. Having lived through ‘humanity’s darkest hour’, these are the last survivors.

As she and Callum, and Isobel and Jordan, get closer and closer, it’s almost too much for her to bear. Trainee Savvas is out to impress El Jefe, but when his makeover of David’s uniform falls flat he decides to pimp up the boss’s Segway. Things come to ahead on the second night out when Chloe, tussling with her guilty conscience, decides to flirt with a stranger and then kiss a guest. Callum responds by asking one of the girl guests to marry him. When the dust settles next day Chloe finally confesses the truth to Callum, who quickly forgives her but is he just putting on a brave face? No such escape for Jordan though when Isobel finds out as well. Is this the end of the road for Jordan and Isobel?

The Stand Up Sketch Show

Valerie (Jennifer Kirby) has to dig deep to help a mother of five come to terms with her son’s birth defect. The Turner’s (Laura Main, Stephen McGann) oversee a measles vaccination trial at the clinic, but an overly anxious first-time mother causes them great concern. It soon becomes apparent that she is harbouring a great loss, which is set to derail her. Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) is determined to make the most of the Whitsun holiday and decides to give the cubs and local residents a most memorable bank holiday by bringing the seaside to Poplar. Violet (Annabelle Apsion) is overjoyed when she wins the council seat for Poplar North.

From established stand up routines by some of the nation’s best loved comedians, to brand new material from Britain’s most exciting up and coming talent. The Stand Up Sketch Show is doing what no comedy has ever done before! Each sketch begins with a comedian telling their story on stage in front of a live audience, before shifting into a surreal reconstruction of the material. Using some of the circuit’s funniest material, the reconstructions will feature visual jokes, supporting performances, ridiculous props and absolutely killer comedy. In each of the sketches the comedian will play the role they were born to play…themselves. Any dialogue in the routines will be lip-synced by the comedians and comedy actors adding to the surreal tone of each scene. With 8-10 sketches per episode, each one will vary in length and be fast paced and funny with a ton of additional gags to make sure the laughs keep coming thick and fast. The Stand Up Sketch Show will add a new dimension to routines from established names as well as brand new material from rapidly rising stars on the comedy scene.

There are currently 217 registered breeds in the UK and we will scour the country to bring viewers the most astonishing, heart-warming and funny doggie tales. Successful business-woman Lisa Varsey (Shivani Ghai) throws a lavish boat party for her family and friends on the River Tyne. But it goes horribly wrong when her sister Dani is found dead in the water. Lisa has an empire of beauty salons in Newcastle and a caring family in husband, Ross (Patrick Baladi), and sister Sadie (Sonita Henry). At first the family believe that Dani’s death was an accident but DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) and pathologist Malcolm Donahue (Paul Kaye) know that the forensics point to murder. Vera and the team alight on concerning rumours that Dani could have been in an abusive relationship and questions whether this could have led to her death. But, the investigation takes a turn when evidence points to the fact that something was rotten in another area of Dani’s life. Vera begins to believe that Dani was going to expose an unpalatable truth. Vera must unpick the tightly-woven threads that hold the family together to discover who killed an innocent woman.

ABOUT TRIBUTOFEST TributoFest is a series of concerts that bring to Tenerife some of the best tribute bands in Europe and the world.

TributoFest aims to be an addition to some of the incredible original acts that come to Tenerife, not a substitute, but unfortunately the logistics and costs of these originals make it impossible for them to arrive. Now it is possible to enjoy a concert/show experience comparable with that of the originals. The best acts of tribute in the business have become self-sustaining entities, keeping the flame of classic rock etc. burning to interpret the songs we all know and love, for the enthusiastic fans around the world.

Miss madonna: UK’s Official No 1

25th January 2019 - 31st January 2019

Jodie Jackson is the official UK No.1 Madonna tribute act, voted by the Agents’ Association at The National Tribute Awards 2018, for the second year running.

She launched her Miss Madonna Show in London in 2009, and, to date, it has taken her to Las Vegas, Japan, Dubai, Bahrain, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Germany, Portugal, Ibiza, Gibraltar, Spain, Italy, Sardinia, Greece, Holland and Finland, as well as locations all over England, Scotland and Wales. And what a year 2018 turned out to be. Not only is she headlining a fantastic new stage show about the life and times of pop legend Madonna called Material Girl, but she was also named the best Madonna lookalike, as well. Material Girl is touring theatres all over the UK, and Jodie is performing all Madonna’s chart-topping hits, and many other of her songs that have made her the icon she is. Material Girl debuted in Finland, in April 2018, at the 4,500-seat Vaasa Arena, and dates have already been confirmed for the show to return. Venues are being added for 2019, as tour schedules take shape. But followers of Miss Madonna needn’t worry, because she will be performing her solo tribute to the Queen of Pop

during breaks in the tour. Jodie trained at Laine Theatre Arts College in Epsom, Surrey, and her pre-Madonna worldwide credits include: · Starlight Express: The West End London & Germany 6 years as Dinah, cover Pearl & Swing · Grand Hotel: West End London as Trude/Telephonist · Bugsy Malone: West End as Lady Louella · A Slice of Saturday Night 60’s Musical UK as Sharon and Sue · Rocky Horror Show UK twice

as Janet · Tommy ‘The Who’s Musical,’ Germany x 3 contracts and 2 years as Sally Simpson. · Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey · Gypsy The Trumpet Stripper · Jodie starred in the title role in Cinderella in 4 Top UK pantomimes playing opposite the TV Stars, Brian Conley, Gary Wilmot, Rolf Harris & Frazer Hines. · In Peter Pan she played Tinker bell twice, opposite Alan Fletcher & Billy Pearce. Her world tours include Royal

Caribbean Cruise Ship New York, Bermuda, Caribbean, Mexico and LA. Norwegian Cruises in the Caribbean. Inland eight-month tour of Mexico in Tihany’s Circus, from South America. Monte Carlo Casino, Monaco for four months as lead singer in Le Cabaret. We can’t wait to welcome Jodie Jackson as Miss Madonna to Tenerife on the 26th January, for her show with Mark Anthony as Prince, as part of TributoFest.

Homes & Away, the Tenerife property people And a word from our sponsors...

So what is Homes & Away anyway? ...don’t worry, we’ll keep it brief!

WE are a well-established, independent property agency, with over 30 years’ experience in the UK and Tenerife property markets. Based in the South of Tenerife, in Golf del Sur, we are a local company, with our own roots in the local community. We specialise in golf properties, predominantly in Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and Costa Adeje, and have an extensive portfolio. It includes all types of residential and holiday properties, from the smallest studio apartment, through to the largest of villas and bungalows. We also have a number of properties in the surrounding areas, including rural locations. Why not pop in for

coffee and a chat? We’d love to meet you. We are here to help you Buying a Tenerife property can be a daunting task. We don’t have pushy, commission-hungry sales people, and ours is a morefriendly approach. We treat you as an individual person, and show you properties that fit your requirements, not properties we’d like to sell. To do this, we begin by listening! At Homes & Away, we will assist you with every step of the process, in the search to find your ideal property. We will guide you throughout, from making an offer, right through to moving in, decoration and furnishings, and getting your

water and electricity turned on. We can even arrange property-inspection visits for three, four or seven nights, as required, at special rates. Time to meet the team (they’re mostly human!) Tanya is the boss lady, and she’s been in the business hundreds of years! B e f o r e residing in Tenerife, she lived high in the hills of Tibet, where she was a verysuccessful alpaca farmer. Unfortunately, she was so successful, the alpacas formed their own society,

held elections, and voted to deport Tanya to the island of Tenerife. On arrival, Tanya discovered it wasn’t suitable here for animal breeding, because of the terrain, so she settled on real-estate marketing, instead. She’s doing OK now, but misses the alpacas terribly, even after all this time. Denise is an Edinburgh lassie, now living the dream in Tenerife. H a v i n g previously worked for NASA, now she enjoys mingling with the stars. She likes to name-drop,

and has the Shakira triplets on her friends list. (You know.... Shakira, Shakira, Shakira... like the song.) Unfortunately, she doesn’t often hang out with them, because she finds it difficult to tell them apart, which makes any conversations a tad awkward. Elsa is our F r e n c h belle. Another smart c o o k i e , she speaks at least 27 languages. We’re positive that clients call the office just to hear her accent. She previously worked with James Bond.

Molly’s comes to the rescue! TributoFest - 4 page Special

MOLLY’S charity shop is situated in the bottom square of San Blas, in Golf del Sur. We stock a wide range of clothing and shoes for all the family, plus toys, electrical and household items. Our shop is run by manager Paula, and her friendly team of volunteers. You are guaranteed a warm welcome when you visit, and we are always looking for more volunteers, if you love animals and have a little bit of free time. Our rescue centre is based near Las Zocas, in a lovely tranquil setting, and we have, currently, several rescue furbabies for adoption or to foster. We have rescued animals as small as a hamster and as big as a horse! All our furbabies are cared for and loved very much by our rescue-centre manager, Uncle Lee, and his team. Lee also needs more volunteers. The centre has plenty of open space for all the furbabies to get a lot of exercise and play, and we have an orchard in which they love running around. We would like to build more kennels, and on our wish list for the centre is a swimming pool for rescued animals’ physiques, and an agility course. Molly’s Vets opened in August 2016, and, since then, we have built up a lovely client list. We are only a small clinic, but it has a very happy, close atmosphere. We have had a refurb, installing a grooming room and air conditioning.

It’s called Molly’s because she was Elaine’s first rescue furbaby at three weeks old. Everybody loves Molly, and she does her meet and greet, whether she’s working at the charity shop or the clinic. Our vet, Alberto, has always wanted to work with animals, and this shows when you meet him. He’s very passionate about his work, and very loving with all the animals we have met. Elaine always dreamt of working with animals, helping

25th January 2019 - 31st January 2019

the village vet when she was younger. She is now known as Auntie Elaine to many furbabies.

Winterwatch will return to BBC Two this year, broadcasting live from its new location in the wildest part of the UK - the Cairngorms National Park - the new, year-round home for The Watches. Presenters Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan and Gillian Burke will host the wildlife extravaganza, kicking off the year in the depths of winter in one of the toughest places in the country for our animals. The freezing temperatures and blanket of snow make this an extreme environment to call home, and the team will explore how the local wildlife adapts to get through this toughest of seasons. Naturalist and presenter Iolo Williams also joins the team in the Cairngorms to investigate some of the mysteries of the season.

Britain’s Brightest Family ITV1, 20.00

Britain’s Brightest Family, the fast-paced, hit quiz show is back for a brand new series on ITV and this time it’s bigger and better than before. Anne Hegerty, The Governess from ITV’s The Chase, returns to host the show where sixteen families will battle it out in a knockout tournament with £25,000 up for grabs for the winning family. Packed full of the show’s signature play-along questions for all the family, it kicks off with a quick-fire round, before heading into an intense head-to-head specialist round, where the families will have to choose which of them will face-off, answering questions on a randomly chosen subject. Then it’s on to a multiple choice round where they’ll all be playing at the same time. The more of them that get it right, the more points their family wins. Up next it’s a brand new memory round where one member of each family will have just 10 seconds to remember a sequence of shapes before having to frantically recreate what they’ve just seen. This all culminates in the final round, where the families will have 90 seconds to win through to the next heat, but with double points up for grabs, it’s anyone’s game.

Fred & Rose West The Real Story with Trevor McDonald cho i c e ITV1, 21.00

This brand new and very powerful documentary features exclusive interviews and insights into one of most disturbing murder cases in British criminal history – Fred and Rose West and the Gloucester House of Horrors. A quarter of a century on from the discovery of the Wests’ extraordinary crimes, in which they murdered young women and girls and buried the human remains under their home at 25 Cromwell Street in Gloucester, people at the heart of the story speak for the first time. Exclusive contributors include former Cromwell Street lodger Jayne Hamer who speaks of hearing screams from the cellar, and tells Sir Trevor how she feels lucky to have left the house alive. We also hear from families of murder victims, including two sisters of Juanita Mott in their first documentary interview. Their sister went missing in 1975, aged eighteen, and her remains were among the nine found at Cromwell St in 1994. Three more sets of human remains were found elsewhere bringing the total number of victims to twelve.

SIMON Manley, Britain’s Ambassador to Spain, has specified that the rights of UK expats will be protected. And, deal or no deal Brexit, it is a top priority.

He spoke with online newspaper Euro Weekly News, the day after the British Parliament’s crushing defeat of Theresa May’s Brexit deal. The Ambassador gave his views on the latest developments in the ongoing Brexit saga, and the significance for British expat residents in Spain. Manley said: “We think the deal reached with our European partners was a good deal. It’s not ideal, and the European Union has made it very clear that it’s the only deal. “In terms of British nationals here, it’s a particularly good deal because it gives the utmost legal certainty. “The things embodied in that withdrawal agreement, in respect of citizens’ rights, are not new. They are within the political agreements we reached back in December 2017 and again in March 2018. “But the importance of the withdrawal agreement is that it embodies those guarantees about the continuity of citizens’ rights in an international legal treaty, and, therefore, gives you greater force of law.” The Ambassador added: “So that’s why, particularly with respect to citizens’ rights, we want to ensure that we get that deal. “It is true that the risk of a no-deal scenario has arisen as a result of that

Ambassador puts his weight behind the expats’ future

Parliament vote. But the Prime Minister made clear that it is not, has not been, and will not be, the Government’s intention to leave without a deal. “And the Government will strive to come to a deal which can have the support of the House of Commons. “The good news for British nationals living here is that our Government will protect the rights of EU 27 nationals in the UK, deal or no deal. “The Spanish Government has come up with a similar statement of intent, publishing details as a basis of what will become a royal decree, and establishing a website which has now gone live. “It is fair to say there are areas where we’d like a bit more clarity on what is intended, and we’ll be doing that over the next few days.”

Manley went on say that the British Government was looking to ensure that the Spanish offer was, genuinely, reciprocal of what has been occurring in the UK. “We want to make sure that people can enjoy the same rights and benefits in the two countries, and we’re quite well advanced in our planning of how to effect that commitment,” he said. “At the heart of that lies the EU Settlement Scheme, through which EU27 and EEA nationals, currently resident in the UK, will be able to register, to give them a status which will guarantee those rights, and their access to those rights. “And, as we have already said, our advice to British residents here in Spain is that the most important thing they can do right now is register.

Wife murderer stabs his lawyer to death! A CONVICTED murderer is suspected of stabbing to death the lawyer who defended him 15 years ago, before throwing himself off a bridge in Teruel, Arogan, last Friday. The deceased, Rebeca Santamalia Cancer, 48, represented Jose Javier Salvador Calvo in 2003, when he was tried for shooting his 29-year-old

wife, a PP candidate for Puebla de Hijar Mayor Patricia Maurel Conte. Calvo, 50, was sentenced to 18 years in prison, and ordered to pay €120,000 to each of his three children, who were minors at the time. He has been on probation since 2017, and is now believed to have killed Ms

Cancer, whose body was discovered at his home in the Aragonese capital, during the early hours. Her husband had reported her missing last Thursday afternoon. Spanish press reports say that Carmen Sanchez, delegate of Zaragoza Council, has confirmed that the lawyer and Calvo were in a relationship.

“It’s not the only thing, but it is the most important. If you look at the withdrawal treaty, it is looking at people who are legally resident, so it is really important that people have proof of

legal residency. “If they haven’t done so already, they should go to Extranjería and get the Green Card. It’s also useful to be on the ‘padron’. “Other things you can

33 CW

do, usefully, is swap your British driving licence for a Spanish version. But at the very heart of what we’re saying, is Residency!” A major concern arising, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, is the pension payments to British residents from UK companies. The Ambassador said: “We’re doing what we can to ensure that it’s not going to be a problem. But that’s one of the risks with a nodeal Brexit. “Some of the things we’ve grown to assume may not be available, but we’re very conscious that pensions, generally, have been a big issue for people here, particularly the updating of them. “We’ve made commitments in respect of a deal scenario, and we’ve made further commitments in respect of a no-deal scenario. “But we’d like to see some form of reciprocal arrangement with Spain, should we find ourselves in that situation.”

Spain still leads world for organ transplants SPAIN heads the international field again for the number of organ transplants carried out, for the 27th year running, and donors are becoming more and more frequent.

Last year alone, the number of donors rose by 37%, from 2,183 to 2,243, enabling surgeons in Spain to carry out a total of 5,314 transplant operations, which was up from 5,259 in 2017. The National Transplant Organisation (ONT) aims to break the 5,500 barrier by the year 2022. And Spain’s donation rate now sits at 48 per million inhabitants, having increased in the past five years by more than ever, from 35.1 per million, says the ONT’s Beatriz Domínguez-Gil, which marks its 30th anniversary in 2019. Transplant numbers now come in at 114 per million inhabitants, the highest proportion in the world, breaking records with

kidney and lung transplants. Of Spain’s 17 autonomously-governed regions, a total of 10 have surpassed the 50-per-million milestone, seven have broken the 60-per-million barrier and two, Cantabria (86.2) and La Rioja (80.6), are over 80 per million. One in three donors, or 629, hit that mark after he/she was confirmed clinically dead, through irreparable cardiac arrest, or cessation of heartbeat, which was 10% more than in 2017. More than 100 hospitals in Spain are authorised to carry out transplants from these donors. The numbers of donors, who were declared brain-dead, has remained around the same. Last year, 289 donors were live, a total fewer than the 2917’s 332, but still 9% of the total. Live donors are, clearly, more limited in the organs they can provide. But, typically, segments of liver, since this can be extracted from a live patient, and kid-

neys, as one is enough for survival, along with stem-cell and bonemarrow transplants, can be carried out using donations from people still living. Non-live donors, who were victims of traffic accidents, have been reduced to 3.8% of the total, which is the lowest on record. Nearly six in 10 donors were aged over 60, with 31% being over 70 and 9% over 80. Last year. Spain’s oldest successful donor, who provided a liver for transplanting, was 91. And only 14% of donors were under 45. Spain’s transplant record is not just the result of a high non-diseaserelated mortality rate, but also patients agreeing to donate their organs after death, or their next of kin being willing for them to do so, should it be too late for the patient to express these wishes. Last year, just 14.8% of families refused to allow their deceased loved ones to become organ donors.

Bar’s Union Jacks could prove costly

A British expat has been threatened with an €800 fine for not taking down the Union Jack bunting at her ‘Little Britannia’ bar in Spain.

Tracey Walker, a 54-yearold from Bradford, told The Sun newspaper that her Benidorm business was under threat, because of the antiUK sentiment surrounding Brexit. “It is a British bar, so what harm are some flags doing promoting my business?” she asked. But Police even threatened

to double the fine when Tracey refused to take down the flags at her bar, in the city’s old town. The Yorkshire woman, who said her bunting had been up for two years, is now hiring a lawyer to represent her. One of Tracey’s regulars also told the newspaper: “There’s real concern that local bigwigs have ordered a crackdown on Brit bars. “There’s not a lot of love lost for Brits in Europe right now, and this could be Benidorm officials giving Brits a kicking in their own way.” He added: “The bunting has been taken down, while Tracey looks to overturn the ban.”

‘Fake lawyer’ charged clients €2000 a minute A “FAKE” lawyer on the Costa del Sol has been arrested after, allegedly, stealing up to €80,000 from clients.

The so-called, legal practitioner in Fuengirola, charged a whopping €2,000 a minute, and even defended clients in court, before being arrested last weekend. It had echoes of renowned author John Grisham’s book, The Rooster Bar, which portrayed a small group of students, pretending to be lawyers because college studying was too difficult, and too costly. They were able to fool court staff and seasoned lawyers alike, until they slipped up. But the lawsuits in which this fraudster was involved were doomed to fail, because of her lack of legal expertise, and, subsequently, her clients suffered huge losses. Veteran Marbella lawyer Antonio Flores said: “When you go to court, nobody asks for your credentials. “So, if for example, if you are a lawyer from Pamplona and

need to attend a hearing in Huelva as counsel, you go straight in… and that is it! No questions asked.” Flores, a well-known legal expert throughout Spain and the UK, said the “fake lawyer” could simply have waltzed in unannounced. But she added. “Having said that, these scams are hard to get away with, because, eventually, someone will notice that you have no clue.” According to media reports, judicial officers uncovered the suspect’s fraudulent activity during a court appearance, leaving her clients without representation. Police claim the woman’s lack of genuine professional expertise also saw her lose several costly lawsuits, with some clients losing as much as €80,000.

Life is a journey... Prepare, to enjoy it without worries

LIVING in Spain is, undoubtedly, a great and enjoyable experience, but, unfortunately, sometimes we have to face the legalities of a different bureaucracy.

You can find many differences in legal procedures, even when it comes to death, something inevitable that we all have to deal with. In order to make things a little easier at these sad times, you must be ready for what’s in store. The cost of a funeral in Spain, like most countries, continues to rise, and most Spanish families take out some kind of funeral insurance to cover the related expenses, and to avoid the administrative headache of what is, of course, a very difficult time. You may ask yourself, do I need funeral insurance in Spain? You might not have thought about it yet, but it might be time to leave everything in place for your loved ones, by taking out a funeral insurance, to alleviate some of the costs and the difficulties that your family will face, especially when they reside outside of Spain. If you want to protect your loved ones from the financial burden and the bureaucracy that this upsetting time entails, consider a Liberty Funeral Insurance, to get everything sorted.

Liberty Seguros guarantees a funeral service according to your local custom, and arranges the necessary documents and paperwork, related to the insured’s death. What are the advantages of this insurance? It gives you sought-after peace of mind, making sure that your loved ones will not have to worry about anything, saving them money and concerns. Liberty Seguros will manage all types of tasks, such as requesting the widow’s or orphan’s pension, or the death certificate, in addition to services during life, such as the will, and the review and drafting of legal documents. They offer payment flexibility so you can go at your own pace: monthly, quarterly, biannually or annually. Moreover, the same policy covers up to eight insured parties, so that all your family can be included, under the same plan. The price becomes more competitive, the greater the number of insured parties. And, as of 90 years of age, you no longer pay the premium, but you will have guaranteed service for life. What covers are included? · Burial or cremation service · Full transport within Spain,

with no limit, and, outside Spain, for trips of up to 90 days · Procedures with government entities, in the event of death · Legal advice, related to the death of the insured · Open notarial will and living will · Digital deletion after death · Psychological assistance for first-degree relatives, in the event of the insured’s death This policy is flexible, and you can tailor it to your own needs, by adding additional covers such as: · Travel assistance in case of serious illness or accidents for Spanish residents, including trips abroad, up to 90 days · Transportation in the even of death, for long-term stays abroad (up to one year) · International transport of Expats residing in Spain (repatriation cover in the even of death) · Arrangements and legal advice, related to privacy To provide all Liberty Seguros customers with a first-class service, their multilingual phone assistance number is available 24/7. Please microchip your dog! WE would like to remind you all that it is obligatory to have your dog microchipped, and registered at your local town hall. Every dog in our care is microchipped, and, once adopted, we change the information to the new owner.

It makes our job much harder to contact the owner of the dog if it arrives at our refuge unchipped, and it can cause your dog a lot of unnecessary stress. Mosquito danger A single bite from an infected mosquito can give your dog heartworm, which can lead to a very slow and painful death. We can never stress enough the importance of treating your dog, either with special drops to the neck each month, a tablet, or a yearly injection, to prevent this happening. Over 60% of the dogs who arrive at the refuge test positive for heartworm. This is a very costly and uncomfortable treatment for the dog, but one of utmost importance, to prevent pain and suffering to the dogs in our care. We guarantee that every dog has all the necessary injections, microchip, passport and a clean bill of health before it is put up for adoption. We do not charge for adopting a dog, but donations are welcomed

towards the ongoing rising costs of running the refuge. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219 or 602463242, between 8am5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. The Sky Bar in Puerto Colon has established itself as one the top cabaret bars in Tenerife in the last 5 years, under the management of Baz. The best of the best local acts grace the stage seven nights a week, hosted by resident compere, and the current holder of the Tenerife Entertainment Awards Best Compere 2018, Didi, plus several famous faces have performed there including Jimmy Cricket, Mick Miller, and Duncan Nourvelle. Following a recent refurbishment, the Sky Bar is welcoming the biggest name of them all on Tuesday 5th February, when comedienne Shaz Hunter makes her debut on this now famous stage. Canarian Weekly went ‘behind the beard’ to find

‘Behind the beard’

out more about this enigmatic artiste by talking to manager Baz, and the great lady herself! CW: So Baz, tell our readers a bit about yourself for those who don’t know you. BAZ: I’m originally from Leeds and first came to Tenerife 13 years ago when I was 18. Like everyone that age I just came for a ‘summer of fun’ and worked mainly in Starco at Edwards and Yates. I then went back to the UK for five years and carried on my trade as a butcher and market trader, coming back to Tenerife in 2013. After a short stint in town again, I took over as manager of Sky Bar in August 2014, and haven’t

looked back since. CW: Has Didi always been the compere, and how pleased were you when he won Best Compere at the TEAs last year? BAZ: No, when I first started we did more chill out music and acoustic sets, but I started to put on a couple of comedians and variety shows as I’m a massive comedy fan, and the bar got busier and busier. At the time Didi was successful on the circuit in bands and as a soloist, and we wanted something different, so we spoke and he joined in 2015. I was made up when he won the award in October as it’s the first solo award he’s won, after his infamous ‘mankini’ performance with Kick to win best Band in 2012. CW: Sky Bar made a series of videos leading up to the awards with Didi in them, but was that Shaz Hunter in the second one? BAZ: It was, but as she did it as a favour so we changed her name to Chloe to protect her identity. Although she did say as a bet she would perform at the Sky Bar if Didi won, and here we are. All I can say is I’m pleased it’s Shaz performing and not me as I’d be terrified, I’ve NEVER actually picked up a mic! CW: So how do you feel now that it’s a reality? BAZ: Very nervous. To be honest I haven’t seen Shaz perform her stand up show before, and it’s proving to be a very busy event and I’ve heard that she can be a bit blue and doesn’t take any prisoners, so I’m not sure what to expect.

CW: Has she been very demanding about her performance? BAZ: Demanding! She’s definitely the most demanding act ever to grace to Sky Bar’s stage, her rider is huge. I mean one of the things the rider requires is 12 roses in her dressing room. I wouldn’t mind but who sells tins of Cadburys Roses at this time of year? And we even had to completely refurbish the bar to her standards! CW: Lastly, what are you hoping from Shaz Hunter’s show? BAZ: I just really hope she’s funny. Having spoken to Baz from the Sky Bar, it was now time to chat to the woman herself, so after being kept waiting for a short while, enter Shaz Hunter. CW: Wow, Shaz, great to meet you, and can we say you look amazing today, but for our readers, tell us about yourself. SHAZ: Well, firstly a lady never reveals her age so I’ll keep you guessing on that one, but I’m a Yorkshire lass who for several years has been at Greggs as a quality control officer, which I loved and got a great sense of achievement from, but I believe I belong on stage giving myself to people. CW: Ok…. And how did you discover that? SHAZ: Well basically it was after going viral on Facebook in Didi’s video for the TEA awards and being catapulted into the limelight. Even though my name was changed in the video, people still recognised me on the streets in Tenerife, Yorkshire, in fact every street I was hanging out on. The public were really nice, complimenting my performance, asking for selfies, some cars even stopped and offered me money! It was at this point I realised I was destined for bigger things and I told Baz that if Didi won an award, that I would

make my comedy debut at the Sky Bar. CW: It’s been said that you are a Yorkshire diva, is there anyone famous you see in you? SHAZ: Well darling obviously there’s loads of A-listers I’d like to see in me, but I think that Queen Gemma of TOWIE and I have sooo much in common. After all, we are both uber glamorous, outgoing, larger than life characters… and I can’t ice skate either! CW: So what can we expect from your show? SHAZ: Well, to be honest, now I have this opportunity I’m grabbing the bull by the horns and riding it. Expect the unexpected with some stand up and maybe a song, and of course a few surprises, it’s an adult only show, so strap in! CW: We’ve seen on your facebook page ‘Shaz Hunter Live’ that you’ve certainly been around promoting the show, where have you been? SHAZ: Ooh yes, all the glam places: Barcelona, Prague, Hollywood, even Hull, they’ve all been Shaz’d on my promotional tour. CW: Finally, where do you see this taking you in the future? SHAZ: Well hopefully my own TV show TOWIY, The Only Way Is Yorkshire, to find me a future husband, and then on to the Real Housewives Of Yorkshire… that’s the dream. Shaz Hunter will be performing on Tuesday 5th February at the Sky Bar in Puerto Colon, hosted by Didi with James & Jones the Jersey Boys, The Ska Show, and Jamie Droo, Tickets are only 10 euros from the bar with all proceeds going to Helping Hands, 4A Friends Of Animals, and Live Arico, so don’t miss out. Baz will be hiding in the dressing r o o m hoping all goes well!

Go Dutch with Gouda! GOUDA cheese is named after the city of Gouda in the Netherlands. It is one of the most popular cheeses in the world, accounting for 50-60% of the world’s cheese consumption.

It is a semi-hard cheese, celebrated for its rich, unique flavour and smooth texture. The original cheese market in Gouda is one of the last-standing commercial cheese markets in the Netherlands. Because the name is not protected, it has become a generic classification for all cheeses produced and sold under the name Gouda. It is, typically, made from pasteurised cows’ milk, although some artisan varieties use the milk of sheep or goats to produce cheeses that are going to be aged for a long time. Boerenkaas is a typical variety of unpasteurised Gouda cheese, produced by the farmers from milk of cows which have grazed on the natural, low pastures of the Netherlands. There are seven types of Gouda

cheese, categorised depending on age. Graskaas is young Gouda, ready to be consumed within weeks of production. The extra-aged, Overjarig cheese has a full-flavoured, hard, golden interior, and a salty flavour, reminiscent of a toffee. Each cheese gets increasingly firmer in texture, and richer in flavour, than earlier classification. The waxed rind of the cheese also changes with age. Soft, younger Dutch Gouda cheeses are identified by yellow, orange, or red wax rinds, while mature cheeses have black wax coverings. In America, smoother and lessflavourful commercial Gouda is more popular than Dutch Gouda.

Artisans in the Netherlands may produce Dutch Gouda using raw milk, as well as pasteurised. To enhance the flavour of the cheese, herbs, seasonings and nuts may be added. In the Netherlands, aged Gouda is commonly used to richen soups and sauces. Young Goudas are best paired with beer ,while medium cheeses taste best when coupled with a fruity Riesling or Chenin Blanc. A well-aged Gouda complements wines that are deeply flavoured, such as a rich Merlot or Shiraz. Gouda cheese may be grated, sliced, cubed or melted, and may be used as a table or dessert cheese.

Driving in Spain after Brexit

By Emma

from Motorworld

MANY rumours are flying around, regarding what will happen to driving licences and driving in Spain, after Brexit, with or without a deal.

We have obtained information from the DGT in Santa Cruz, which they have asked us to pass on to our readers. We must stress that, at present, this is not official, but what the staff have been advised, at local level. At the moment, if you have held a Green Residencia for two years or more, you are legally obliged to exchange your licence for a Spanish (European) one. Up until you have held the Green Residencia for this period,

SHINY till-roll paper, used for cardpayment machines and as proof of purchase, are made with a chemical that can cause cancer and infertility, according to a joint study involving Granada University.

Some 95.3% of purchase receipts issued in Spain contain Bisphenol-A in the print, a compound used to make certain types of hard and soft plastics, and which acts as a xenoestrogen, or produces properties similar to those found in the female hormone oestrogen. Conversely, it can act as an antagonist to oestrogen, reducing its natural production. The European Chemicals Agency listed Bisphenol-A (BPA) as a “substance of special concern” because of its endocrine-disruption effects, which can lead to hormone-related obesity and other health problems, including cancer in hormonedependent organs. Five years earlier, the United States’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned its use in manufacturing baby bottles. Research led by Granada University also involved scientists from the same city’s San Cecilio University Hospital and from the Granada Biohealth Research Institute, along with the Université ParisDéscartes and the Necker

the exchange can be done, but it is voluntary; unless the licence is due to expire for the photo or age, then you have to renew in your country of residence, NOT the country of issue. If you currently hold a Spanish licence, this is valid for driving in all other

European countries and an international licence is not necessary, unless visiting a country outside the EU, or when you have not received a renewed or exchanged licence. However, after the 29th March 2019, when Brexit should/would be enforced,

this whole situation regarding driving will change. Until the 29/3/2019, Tráfico will continue to verify licences with the UK, ie starting the verification process, because an exchange is a two-part process. Although they will continue to accept applications to verify UK licences and send them to the DVLA, they are unaware as to whether they would receive any responses from the UK. The assumption is that a deal would be agreed with the UK, similar to that currently held with nonEU member countries, such as Switzerland and South America, for example. Please note that not all licences are exchangeable. So, for people who hold a UK licence, after the 29th March 2019, in order to be able to drive in Spain, they would be required to obtain an international driving licence, which would then permit them to drive legally in Spain for six months, during which time it is hoped that a deal will have been agreed. Of

course, this would have to be obtained from the DVLA. Sadly, there are many people who have held a Green Residencia for many years, and they have refused to exchange their licences, despite being told that this is illegal, both under Spanish and UK law. (Refer to the DVLA website, which explains, clearly, what must be done, regarding the situation when living abroad.) With this in mind, we strongly recommend that people who fall into the above category start the exchange process without delay, or face, perhaps, not being able to drive in Spain. It is also highly likely that those who hold a Spanish licence and visit the UK and rent a car, for example, will need an international driving licence, because it will no longer be a European country. We are not politically biased either way, and are just Official Tráfico collaborators, passing on information to our current or future clients, and readers of this newspaper.

appear to show that BPA is “rapidly absorbed, detoxified and eliminated from humans, and, therefore, is not a health concern”. Nevertheless, more and more manufacturers are seeking alternative substances, such as Bisphenol-S (BPS) which has a similar molecular structure to BPA but is less harmful. The Granada University

team’s findings, published in the Environmental Research magazine, says: “Surveillance systems for toxicity and chemical compounds are failing, particularly in their duty of care towards the hundreds of thousands of people, who work on tills and are in constant contact with purchase receipts containing BPA.”

Shiny till-receipt paper could be harming health Enfants Malades hospital in the French capital, plus Brazil’s National School of Public Health, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They also found that nearly 91% of till receipts in Brazil and 50% in France contained BPA. Those which do are easy to identify, says the research team, since they fade over time and the print disappears completely. “The white powder which comes off when you take the receipt out of your purse, and which sticks to your fingers, is the BPA,” says a Biohealth Research Institute spokesman. Investigators advise consumers not to let receipts get near food, nor screw them up to dispose of them, write notes on them or keep them in the car, purse or a handbag, nor let children play with them. BPA levels in the blood and urine have been found, in previous studies, to be higher after people ate with their fingers after handling purchase receipts, or touched them after cleaning their hands with an anti-microbial sanitiser. In practice, the volume contained in purchase receipts is negligible. The

maximum safe level of BPA in the human system, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency, is 50 micrograms per kilo of body weight, or, according to the European Food Safety Authority, five micrograms per kilo of body weight. Yet the highest BPA levels found in blood during the study were all below 12 nanograms per litre. The problem is down to BPA being present in a high number of everyday plastics, and it is most likely to enter the human body via the lining of food tins and drinks cans, or plastic water bottles. This said, the volume of BPA person is exposed to, from all sources in everyday life, is 1,000 times lower than the safe levels established by government authorities in Europe, the US and Canada, according to the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States. And the European Food Safety Authority says “current exposure levels of BPA pose no health risk to anyone, even unborn children, infants and adolescents”. The UK Food Standards Agency says numerous studies

It’s just a stroll for dominant Tenerife

CD Tenerife

TENERIFE looked a different team as they cantered to their most comfortable win of the season, albeit against bottom club Nástic, who showed why they’re struggling.

But with the debuts of Serbian Uros Racic, bought from Valencia B, and Borja Lasso who has been on-loan at Osasuna, Nástic did nothing to trouble coach Oltra’s men, in front of their passionate fans. Right from the off, CDT were on the attack, dominating with some excellent football, and they had three superb chances which could have sealed the game in the first half-hour. In the 17th minute, Jorge met a good cross on the sixyard line, with a header that forced an acrobatic save from Nástic keeper Bernabé, who was set for a busy afternoon. Debutante Lasso tried a leftfoot curler in the 19th minute, which beat the keeper but not the post, keeping the score at 0-0. Eight minutes later, Mila rocketed a 25-yard free-kick onto the upright as well. The breakthrough came from this free-kick, as CDT

CD Tenerife 2 Gimnástic 0

stole the ball back through Malbasic, as Nástic came forward. He passed to Lasso, who crossed to the left-hand side of the goal, where Suso,

all alone, headed an easy goal past Bernabé, to put the home side ahead. Oltra enjoyed Tenerife’s play in the first half so much that

he sacrificed Naranjo and opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation to accommodate Racic, as organiser, and Lasso as playmaker. The blue-and-whites, comfortable with the ball, offered good offensive play without suffering too much in their own area. Nástic didn’t get a shot on goal, and Dani was only bothered by a couple of lateral crosses, which the keeper picked up comfortably. Little changed after the break in the second half, although Nástic midfielder Pipa had a shot which Dani had covered. After that, it was all Tenerife again for the

rest of the match. New boy Racic grew in midfield, putting a 15-yard shot just wide, and then, in the 59th minute, he passed inside to Jorge Sáenz, who toe-poked it through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 2-0 to Tenerife. Racic wasn’t finished, though, because he had a chance to make it 3-0 in the 69th minute. But a good save from Nástic’s busiest player put the ball over the crossbar to safety. Towards the end of the game, Tenerife’s dominance continued with Malbasic and Milla having halfchances, but failing to find the back of the net. At the final whistle, the home team had secured a fullydeserved, morale-boosting win. The whole team had played well, Oltras tactics and formation changes had worked, and the new players had performed brilliantly. Yes, this was against the league’s bottom-placed team, and CDT’s next match tomorrow (Saturday) is at home against secondplaced Malaga. But morale is everything, and, if last Sunday is anything to go by, Oltra may have uncovered a couple of future stars!

Cardiff’s new £15m star lost in aircraft tragedy GUERNSEY Police have halted their search for Cardiff City’s missing £15 million club-record signing Emiliano Sala, and pilot David Ibbotson, because they believe their chance of survival is “extremely remote”.

The police could find “no trace” of the six-seater Piper Malibu, which vanished off the Alderney coast on Monday at 8.30pm. Mark McKay, acting on behalf of Sala’s club FC Nantes, who sold him for a record fee to

Cardiff, chartered the flight and Sala’s French agent, Meissa N’Diaye, also helped with the arrangements. Yesterday (Thursday), Cardiff City reiterated that they had

offered to get Sala to the UK from Paris, but the player told them he already had a flight booked. Club chief Ken Choo said: “We made offers for Emiliano

to fly on commercial flights from Paris, but the player said, ‘don’t worry about that, I have alternative arrangements. I will see you at the training ground on Tuesday’. “He requested that our club officials pick him up from the airport in Cardiff on Monday night, after touchdown at 8.45pm. “With hindsight, we should have pushed, but we had communicated with the player and we had to respect his wishes. We did not want to make the player uncomfortable with any arrangements.” Harbour Master Captain David Barker said: “My team just have me to review

the search-and-rescue operation, which has been underway since the plane disappeared. “But despite the best efforts of air-and-search assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, who have covered an area of approximately 1,700 square miles, we have been unable to find any trace of the aircraft, the pilot or the passenger. “We reviewed all the information available to us, as well as knowing what emergency equipment was on board, and have taken the difficult decision to end the search.” He added: “The chances of survival at this stage are extremely remote.”

Laia wins top female place in Dakar Rally

SPANISH driver Laia Sanz was the highestplaced woman in this year’s Dakar Rally, finishing 11th overall in the world’s toughest, off-road, motorracing challenge.

She has won the women’s section seven times before, always competing alongside men, because the Rally is a mixed competition. And, this year, Laia was one of 17 females among more than 500 males, the largest women’s participation in the event’s 41-year history. Despite its name, the Dakar Rally is not necessarily held in, or near, the Senegalese capital. In fact, it has a different venue every year and has not taken place on the African continent. This year’s challenge took place in the fiercest of conditions, across the desert

in the south of Perú, finishing yesterday (Thursday). Laia, (pictured), who is dubbed “Queen of the Desert”, came ninth overall in 2015, which is still her best Dakar result. But her finish this year gave her an eighth trophy as winning female. She is also the first motorcyclist, male or female, to complete the race nine times on the trot, without dropping out. The Team Soficat Xerox rider was “very happy” with a result she was not expecting, especially after suffering a series of energysapping illnesses, including Q-fever, neuropathy and mononucleosis, the latter being a type of auto-immune condition. “I’ve gone through a lot to get here,” said the 42-yearold, now back to full health. “If I’d been told a month ago that I’d make No.11, I wouldn’t have believed it.”

Ronaldo smiles away massive €18.8m fine FOOTBALL superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who cut a deal with a Madrid court over tax-evasion charges, accepted an €18.8m (£16.6m) fine. The deal, agreed in advance, includes a 23-month jail sentence. But in Spain, convicts do not usually do time for sentences under two years. A huge media presence met the player outside the court, after a judge refused his request to appear by video, or to enter the building by car to avoid the spotlight. The non-violent nature of Ronaldo’s offence means he is likely to spend the whole sentence on probation instead. His court appearance lasted mere minutes, as Ronaldo accepted the deal offered by prosecutors. The Juventus player, who played for the club in Italy the night before, arrived at the provincial court with his fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez. Smiling and giving a thumbs-up, he was apparently unfazed by the

media presence. His lawyers had argued that given his fame, avoiding the main entrance was needed for the player’s security. Ronaldo, five-time winner of Europe’s Ballon d’Or, and acknowledged as one of the world’s best players, was accused of avoiding paying tax in Spain between 2010 and 2014, when he was playing for Real Madrid, and lived in the Spanish capital. Forbes lists the 33-year-old as the third-wealthiest athlete in the world, with estimated earnings of €95 million a year. The case centred on lucrative image-rights deals, and prosecutors said the proceeds were funnelled through low-tax companies

in foreign nations, to avoid paying tax. In court, as part of his deal, Ronaldo acknowledged four incidents, amounting to €5.7m owed, according to Spanish-language news agency EFE. In 2017, when the allegations first emerged, prosecutors said it was a “voluntary and conscious breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain”. But Ronaldo’s lawyers said it is all down to a misunderstanding over what was and was not required under Spanish law, and deny any deliberate attempt to evade tax. The deal, struck last June, had to be agreed with Spain’s tax authorities.
