Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice
T
The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond
Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.
The returns over the last few years have been: 2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
6.80%
6.88%
9.48%
5.85%
8.68%
The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. Drones will curtail speeds
Continued from Front
Together with new radars, they will enable the country’s traffic controllers to achieve a broader control over Spanish roads, with the aim of reducing accident rates. The drones were tested successfully during the Christmas Exit Operation, and their incorporation has been projected for this year. How do they work? The drones are very small, and, despite being designed for motorways, their size allows them to be used on any road. They can be airborne for two hours and have a performance radius of 500 metres. The drones don’t have a real-time speed camera, so they will be used to monitor traffic only, and can record any criminal action, using 13-megapixel cameras. They will record road infringements such as overpassing continuous lines or illegal manoeuvres, identifying the offender and warning officers of any offence. Meanwhile, the DGT officially lowered the speed limit on secondary roads, from 100kph to 90kph last Tuesday. Earlier last month, the Council of Ministers approved the measure, which is designed to cut the death toll from road accidents. At the moment, 66% of road fatalities occur on secondary roads, about half of which are down to cars leaving the
highway, usually because of excessive speed. Spain joins other European countries which are, or are in the process of, lowering the speed limit on their secondary roads, as in France, to 80kph.
The Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland, Finland, Cyprus and Malta also have an 80kph limit, while Sweden’s is the lowest at 70kph. There are four countries in Europe with a higher limit: the UK stands at 96kph (60mph),
with Germany, Austria and Romania keeping the maximum at 100kph. In these three countries, the motorway limit of 130kph also tops Spain’s 120kph limit. Lowering the speed limit on Spanish secondary roads
is part of the battery of measures introduced by the DGT this year. Fines for not wearing seat belts will also be tightened, and the use of other vehicles, such as bicycles and scooters, will be regulated. The reduction in the maximum limit will affect around 7,000 kilometres of roads. And drivers of vans, lorries and buses, which, until now, could reach a maximum of 90kph on these roads, must keep to an 80kph limit. Trafico’s department of roads is planning to make the new limit effective early this month. It is also in the process of adapting existing signs using stickers, as happened when speed was reduced on motorways, temporarily, to 110kph in 2011.
Luck was on side of school-crash driver
A MAN driving a small Citroën van crashed into the outer wall of the Cisneros School, on the Santa Cruz-La Laguna motorway.
It could have been a disaster had the incident happened at 7am and not an hour later, when the school would have been full of children. According to sources, the Citroën man was cut up by a hire-car driver, causing him to lose control of his
vehicle and smash into the school wall. The offending driver left the vehicle promptly and fled. Local Police attended the scene, where they saw two people with
minor injuries, who were taken by ambulance to a nearby health centre for observation. The rented car, left at the scene, was not been reported stolen or missing.
Fortunately, school classes went ahead as usual, and the damage caused was superficial. The children spent the day in school while the premises were being repaired.
Saint’s sparkling renovation
ADEJE’S Santa Úrsula Church officials have announced the restoration of a St Paul statue, in which he is carrying book of the Epistles in the folds of his cloak.
The restoration team, led by Silvano Acosta, a Tenerife-based restorer and conservation expert, used a technique to set the original polychrome pieces, using original glues to repair parts of the sculpture, manually. The work was delicate, said Silvano, because the team “didn’t want to lose materials during the process, and worked in specific zones, on crests and elevated sides”. The affected parts were all reconstructed, cracks were repaired using polyvinyl glues, and the sculpture was cleaned.
Information found in the official archives revealed that the statue was located on the main altar piece, in the San Francisco Convent of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St Paul. It was founded in 1679 by the first Marques of Adeje, Juan Bautista de Ponte Fonte y Pages. The original altar disappeared, to be replaced with an 18th Century style until 1841, when it was brought to Arona’s church in San Antonio Abad. Silvano said: “This statue bears the influence of the house of Martín de Andujar. We are probably looking at a sculpture from his school, and, perhaps, the artist was part of the Garachico School of the time. “The style is archaic but wasn’t popular. It would appear to have been inspired by pre-existing models from the time.”

FITUR trade fair really is fit for the King and Queen!
1st February 2019 - 7th February 2019
ONE of Europe’s largest tourism industry trade fairs, FITUR, opened its doors last Monday week in Madrid’s IFEMA exhibition centre.
It was officially opened by the Spanish King and Queen on the Wednesday, and was opened to the general public on Saturday and Sunday. Between the Monday and Friday, only members of the travel industry and public authorities were allowed in, and the first two days were relatively informal, until the Monarchs cut the red tape on day three. FITUR is the one trade fair of the year that no local council or regional government is willing to miss, or cut out of their travelling or advertising budget. It is probably one of the world’s most famous, which is why every council throughout Tenerife, North and South, and the other Canary Islands, is represented at an event which sees thousands of deals struck between tour operators, travel agencies and tourism authorities. Every Spanish region has its own stand, and, within these, most towns, villages and cities hold a smaller stall,
all of them pushing their greatest attractions, in a bid to entice more holidaymakers. Spain’s coastal regions rarely bother promoting their beaches, because these are what the bulk of foreign tourists travel to the country for anyway. But some smaller towns, whose holiday-makers are nearly all Spanish, often do so in an effort to attract foreign visitors. Established beach destinations have been promoting their other attractions at FITUR for the past few years, to convince holidaymakers that, even without the weather and the sunbathing, they are still excellent places to frequent for an annual break. This is especially true of coastal Andalucía, the Comunidad Valenciana and the islands, where numerous
municipalities live largely off holiday-makers, and, actively, try to keep tourism alive outside the summer season. As well as Spain’s own stands, about half to two-thirds of the world’s countries at any one time set up booths at FITUR, with international agreements between industry professionals and tourist boards being struck, every few minutes. King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, entered the building via the north face, where, hardly by coincidence, the striking taxi drivers had not blocked the entrance. The royal couple joined around 40 national tourism ministers on their walk around the stands, and visited the Meliá Hotel group and Air Europa stands, as well as those of various countries
including, of course, Spain and its islands. Ángel Garrido, Madrid’s Regional President, joined them during their visit, showing them the capital’s stand, which was focused this year on the 200th anniversary of its world-famous El Prado art museum. Cantabria’s section even featured a recreation of life on Mars, in a cave in the village of Arredondo! FITUR’s international partner this year was the Dominican Republic, whose stand organisers gave Queen Letizia a pair of earrings, designed especially for her, and made with amber and larimar, the latter being a pastel-coloured stone found only in the Caribbean nation. They also presented King Felipe with a set of gold-andamber cufflinks. Royal visits included the
stands for Columbia, Tunisia, Egypt and the Arab Emirate of Ras Al-Khaimah, and also the Iran booth, where they were greeted with a traditional dance show. FITUR 2018 hosted 886 country and regional stands and 10,487 trade stalls, all covering a total of 165 countries. These figures demonstrate that this mighty event has expanded by 8.3% on 2018, which was a record year for the tourism fair. Members of the public were allowed to wander round the stands last weekend, followed by the fair closing for another year on Sunday night. King Felipe and Queen Letizia are pictured with many of Spain’s dignitaries, including Francina Armengol (Balearic Islands), and Fernando Clavijo (Canary Islands). Roll on next year!
Thug drove car over a victim, time and again A MAN from Lanzarote, aged 24, was charged with attempted murder in Arrecife last Sunday evening, after using his car to run over a person, with intent to kill him. The detainee already had a police record, and witnesses say a fight broke out between two men. The arrested man, who was punched in the face during the brawl, then got into his
car and decided, quite deliberately, to drive it over his opponent, back and forth. The police responded to an emergency call, advising them that a person had been knocked over at an Arrecife fairground car park. Upon arrival, they spotted a young man in a pool of blood, and signs that the driver had sped away from the scene. The officers immediately requested a medical team, who, upon arrival, transferred the victim, quickly, to a nearby medical centre.
He was stabilised, before being taken to hospital in a critical condition. Thanks to a detailed description by witnesses, officers were able to locate the violent attacker at a petrol station in San Bartolome, where they detained and charged him immediately. His vehicle had several dents around the front of the car, and the windscreen was severely cracked. The car was confiscated to allow forensic evidence to be taken, and court proceedings are continuing.

A dozen road deaths already, in 27 days!
AT least 12 people lost their lives on the roads in the first 27 days of this year, making last Sunday (27th January) the worstever period recorded for accidents resulting in death, across the Canary Islands at the start of the year.
During 2018, 43 people died on the roads in trafficrelated accidents across the archipelago, which isn’t even an average of one person per week. Compared with the 2018 figures, these 12 deaths are equal to a devastating three people per week. And this has created huge concern for the Canarian Government. Last Sunday, three bikers lost their lives in Gran Canaria’s Morgan municipality, with a minor left in a critical condition. The accident happened just after 2.30pm, when two motorcycles crashed into each another on the GC200, a road favourable to
bikers wanting to do an island round trip. The couple on a BMW died instantly, upon impact, as did the Honda 70 rider, but the pillion rider, his 14-yearold son escaped death then, but later died in the Dr Negrin Hospital. Another road tragedy was reported last Sunday in Lanzarote, on the LZ-34 in the Arrecife municipality, after a 27-year-old passenger was thrown out of a car, causing his death. He was flung from the vehicle as it rolled, uncontrollably, over the
driver, who had lost control of his machine. The driver, aged 28, was unhurt at the time, but he suffered a panic attack when the ambulance team arrived. The other eight road accidents registered to date comprised three accidents involving motorbikes, and four involving cars. Sadly, the other death registered on the roads, involved a person being run over From the 12 lives lost, eight were male victims, along with four women.

The man who simply cannot stop thieving!
ADEJE’S Local Police have detained a well-known thief and one-time delinquent, charging him with breaking into a popular hairdressing shop in the area.
The 32-year-old, who forced the front-door lock to gain access at around 4am, in the Los Olivas area, was also charged with vandalism, while helping himself to 2,000 euros. He was identified as A.S.S, and is known to the authorities because of his previous convictions, spanning several years, which were committed, mainly, in the Adeje municipality. But he also added several
other crimes to his record, carried out in a similar manner in neighbouring towns. Sources say the man started his criminal life as a youngster. It was also noted that when he was young, he was always joined by his brother, who has since died. Last September, the man was arrested for trying to break into various Adeje establishments. And, prior to those incidents, he was also detained after suffering several cuts, while attempting to break into to a post office in the same area. On this occasion, however, once caught and arrested, he was taken to the local Las Torres police station, where he was handed over to the Guardia Civil.

NEWS IN BRIEF Advance bookings Missing ex-pat’s body found
needed to visit tiny Canary island
POLICE have confirmed that the body, washed up on a Costa del Sol beach in October, is that of missing British expat Roger Hanks.
The 73-year-old pensioner disappeared from Coin during the floods on 10th October last year, and police believe he was carried away by a river. Some 13 days later, a body washed up on the Ancha beach in Casares, Manilva, in an advanced state of decomposition. But confirmation of his name came when his DNA matched those of his relatives.
Military remodelling on way TOURISTS keen to visit the tiniest of Canarian islands, have to get written permission, three days in advance, to limit numbers and protect it from over-population. TENERIFE Cabildo and the Ministry of Defence have signed an agreement of intent, to adapt and remodel a number of military installations on the island. Barracks in La Laguna are set to be adapted for educational use, while other facilities will be used for the Anaga National Park. Other military sites would then be expanded, merged or closed, but negotiations over final plans are ongoing.
Lost fisherman found dead
LIFEGUARDS stationed at Santa Cruz found the body of a man in the sea last Sunday, after an intensive search was activated when a fisherman failed to return from a boat trip.
The body has been confirmed officially as that of the fisherman, who was identified officially, but his name was not released. A Helmer 206 aircraft, and the Punta Salinas boat, together with a Santa Cruz-based search-and-rescue vessel, took part in the search
The Isla de Lobos, just a short boat-ride from Fuerteventura, used to be visited by thousands of sightseers every year. But the Island’s Council agreed to prevent it being ruined by enforcing a top limit of 400 people a day, divided into two parties. A spokesman said: “The aim was to guarantee the preservation of this unique space and natural park.” Lobos is under two square miles in size, with just a handful of facilities. But, at one stage, it became so fashionable that protest groups were counting as many as 2,000 tourists on Saturdays and Sundays. Though the tiny island is rich in marine biodiversity and endemic species of plants and birds, campaigners say there is nothing for tourists to do, except take photographs.
Fuerteventura officials have just completed a trial period of asking would-be visitors to register in advance, and they were even offering time-slots from which to choose. Each visitor was allowed up to three people per day, online, and there are two, four-hour time-slots. The island is reached by boat only, and officials made sure they checked visitors’ tickets. Those without them, who attempted to get on the island, were fined. The system was on trial throughout January, and will now be reviewed, Fuerteventura President Marcial Morales stressing: “Compliance with the regulations
of the Master Plan for the Use and Management of Islote de Lobos requires this type of measure, to combine the full enjoyment of the natural area with its correct preservation.” The next step is likely to be the introduction of a tourist tax, the income going towards conservation work, cleaning and monitoring this natural space. This year, there will be two archaeological excavations on two of the island’s sites, including La Calera beach, also known as Concha, where there is evidence that the Romans might have collected molluscs for purple dye.

Thief’s high hopes drop through roof
NATIONAL Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for attempting to break into a bank, in San Fernando village, in Gran Canaria’s touristic area of San Bartolome de Tirajuana. The would-be thief gained entry through an air vent on the roof, but, once inside the premises, he triggered the anti-theft alarm. Apparently,
he panicked, and tried to escape, back through the roof. But, unfortunately for him, officers were waiting to arrest him. The Moroccan already has a colourful police record, containing several similar offences. He was charged with breaking and entering, and is, at present, awaiting his appearance before a judge.
Crafty thief tricked old lady and stole her gems
Man dies after losing control of his tractor A LOCAL Guimar man, aged 46, lost his life last Monday after driving his tractor on the edge of a hillside. Sadly, he lost control of the vehicle and rolled some 50 metres down the hillside, into a ravine. The accident happened in the town of San Juan El Tagoro,
in the Arico municipality, and an emergency call was received, just before 1.30pm, by an anonymous person. Because of his description of the incident, an ambulance and the fire services were sent to the scene, with a helicopter hovering close by. When the firemen finally reached the tractor, they realised that the man trapped inside wasn’t breathing.
Once they retrieved him, it was clear that the driver had suffered a massive heart attack. The medical team attempted CPR, but, unfortunately, were unable to revive him. Guardia Civil officers, also at the scene, took charge of the body until the judicial authorities arrived to take it for an autopsy, to clarify the cause of death.
to nursery school right up until that date. Mums do not need to take any action, according to the new legislation – nursery schools themselves are required to present a declaration, known as Form 233, about the children who attended their centre, and the costs involved to their caregivers. They are required to present this form, which can be handled by their accountant or gestor, by Friday, February 15 this year. After 2019, the declarations will be needed before the end of January along with all other tax-related information which companies and the self-employed need to present to their accountants in the first month of each
year. Form 233 should include costs of enrolment and registration, plus that of all attendance and food provided to each child. Mothers are specifically referred to, since this tax deduction is considered an extension of maternity benefits, but can also apply to fathers or to adoptive or foster parents, or any other official guardians. It applies to whoever has paid the nursery fees – even if parents’ companies fund them as part of a perk of their jobs, but, in this case, the taxreturn amount will go to the firm instead. Parents cannot claim tax rebates on nursery fees where these have been paid for out of grants or benefits, normally provided by the social services or charities. Although no additional action is needed by parents – at least until the annual tax declaration season starts in late April or early May – they are advised to mention the matter to their children’s nursery school, to ensure that the owners or management are aware of the new legislation, and have arranged to present Form 233 for each family.
Under-threes earn Mum a tax rebate A MAN aged 61, who already possesses a police record, has been arrested in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, charged with robbing an elderly lady.
He made friends with the victim, intending to cement a relationship with her, and gain her trust, so that she would invite him home. He felt he could then take advantage of her by going on a thieving spree. The lady friend was an 87-year-old woman, and she did invite him home, where he stole gold, jewellery, credit cards and cash, as well as other personal documentation. The lady made an official police report, telling them that she had met the man just days beforehand, at the front door of her apartment block. She said he came across
as an extremely kind and considerate individual. The elderly lady also told the National Police that he claimed to be friendly with the block’s caretaker. Before she was aware, she was inviting the so-called gentleman up to her home for a coffee. Later that day, the penny dropped and she realised that items were missing, including many pieces of gold and jewellery, worth up to 60,000 euros. Once the police report was issued, an investigation began. The police soon identified the crafty individual, and also discovered his whereabouts. He was searched, and the cops found that he was carrying the woman’s identity card and credit cards. The man also had in his possession some foreign currency, along with receipts, adding up to 400 euros. The suspect, who was arrested swiftly, is currently awaiting a court appearance.
WORKING women, with pre-school children who went to nursery last year, can reclaim up to €1,000 towards their costs in their tax declaration for 2018, scheduled to be filed in the Spring.
A recent change in incometax legislation means mums with jobs, or who were selfemployed in 2018, can offset playgroup or kindergarten costs, provided their children went to an authorised centre and were aged three or under, right from birth. The €1,000 tax repayment applies to each child, and is in addition to the €1,200 deduction they already receive, although paid between six and 18 months in arrears, for each child they have, who are not yet three. This tax break can be applied for, even if the child is now three or over, up to a month before he or she starts the second year of reception classes at school. Children normally start school in the September after turning three years old, but most go

This “non-binding” agreement will allow for the new mobile technology to roll out “much more quickly”, said Telefónica. It will be the first time the UK company has entered into a networksharing partnership of this type, if it does go ahead! The contract was awarded in April last year for the sum of £317.7 million (about €362m), at 40MHz on a 3.4GHz band. The two giant companies are said to be analysing options for offering a shared fibreoptic network, and exploring ways of optimising the passive transmission tower grid, of which they own 50%. Whether the deal goes ahead depends on the firms agreeing the small print, and finalising the legal aspects, as well as gaining the necessary authorisations. Spain’s National Competition and Values Markets Commission (CNMV) are likely to
approve the joint venture, because Telefónica appears to have received the unofficial nod already, after writing to the regulatory board. Telefónica stressed to the CNV that this alliance would allow its UK-based brand, O2, and Vodafone jointly, to offer 5G services to more customers within a wider geographical area, and at a lower cost. As well as increasing connection speed and capacity, 5G technology reduces website response times by around a millisecond, which would be enough to allow for “driverless driving”, and even remote, surgical operations, to become a reality. Other than O2, via Telefónica and Vodafone, the UK’s other main operators are EE Limited, owned by the BT group, and Hutchinson, which each hold 40MHz and 20MHz of the 3.4GHz band, respectively. It means that the VodafoneTelefónica fusion would, instantly, put them in control of a larger market and network share. The deal, should it be realised, is expected to allow the network-sharing operation to start later this year.

THE “flat-bodied” Angel shark, one of the rarest of all the species, and a regular habitant of the Canary Islands, has been sighted by fishermen off the coast of Wales.
This, say experts and devotees, is a promising sign of life for the criticallyendangered creature. These sharks, which swim along the ocean floor, and mask themselves with sand, have been reported off Cardigan Bay, the Bristol Channel and near Holyhead. Since the population of the Angel shark continues to decline, researchers decided to investigate. Last year, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Natural Resources

Angel sharks in Wales spell joy for the devotees
Wales (NRW) started the “Angel Shark Project: Wales”, encouraging people to contact them if they spotted the sea creature. Last Thursday, the groups asked residents to share photos and memories of the endangered species, during
their first “Angel shark History Roadshow”. The ZSL says on its website: “Angel sharks are important to the marine environment because they are a top predator, listed as the world’s fifth-most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally-
Endangered shark. The website also notes that the Welsh coast could be an important home for the species. Angel sharks used to be fairly common across the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas, but a disrupted habitat, pollution
Man with Angel shark is facing prosecution
AN official complaint was made across the social media last Sunday by Facebook page Especies de Canarias administrators, about the illegal capture of an Angel shark.
It was captured with a harpoon off the coast of Morgan, Gran Canaria, and the Facebook page post stated that they were still in disbelief, and couldn’t comprehend what they had witnessed earlier in the day. The page has attached images of a man walking down the street in Morgan carrying the endangered species on his back. And the administrators have made an official complaint to the Guardia Civil. The man has since been identified, and Guardia officers will be prosecuting the individual. The Angel shark is regarded as an endangered species, though it is not recorded as such, and, unfortunately, is not protected.
and overfishing have contributed to its demise, says ZSL. But scientists hope the recent sightings will help provide clues to the species’ behaviour and preferred habitat, and, in turn, avoid the mysterious sharks’ extinction. “If we lose the Angel shark, we lose a really important lineage of evolutionary history, which we can’t get from any other shark species,” ZSL’s marine biologist Joanna Barker, told BBC News. She has been studying the sharks for a while, particularly around the Canary Islands, but she is now starting to unfold their history in Welsh waters. Following recent sightings, she is curious about their new homes, and whether there are distinct populations. “What we really want to find out is what sort of numbers we are talking about, and where their important habitats are, because there could be some really critical areas for Angel sharks in Wales,” she said. She believes researchers are planning to take swabs of the sharks’ skin during dives, later this year. Until then, marine experts hope to glean more information about the Angel sharks from locals, using their photos and stories to help track the movements of the species, off the coast of Wales.

There’s no telling these infected fish
IN the past decade, no fewer than 108 people have been diagnosed with the Ciguatera infection, which comes from fish.
And because the fish smells, looks and tastes like any other healthy specimen, one that carries this toxin will go undetected, unless properly analysed. The toxin simply cannot be destroyed, even when the fish is frozen, smoked, cured
or cooked. This infection is called Ciguatera, which is food related and comes from fish that have the ciguatoxin inside their bodies. The toxins are tiny micro-organisms, found in seaweed in the oceans’ natural environment. Since 2011, several analyses have been conducted, and there has been an increase in the presence of ciguatoxin in fish destined for our dinner table. Signs of ciguatera poisoning usually begin 2-12 hours after eating an affected fish. The most common signs are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea

Jailed man robbed grandad of £4,500 to pay for holiday BRETT Bridgen, a 24-year-old from Liverpool, who used online banking to rob his grandad of £4,500 and pay for a holiday in Ibiza, has been jailed for stealing.
Brigden used online banking to send money into his personal account, the day before travelling to the Spanish island. He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court last week, and was sentenced to 17 months in prison. Prosecutor Jaime Baxter said the accused had visited the 73-year-old grandad at his Cheshire home on 24th April, 2016, claiming he was owed a birthday present from him, and that he was planning to fly to Ibiza the next day. Two days later, the grandad received a call from the fraud action department, reporting that thousands of pounds been transferred, without authorisation, between a savings account and a current account, before being sent to Bridgen’s bank account.
British press reports maintained that the offender had been jailed in the past for stealing from his grandfather. Liverpool Crown Court was told that Bridgen’s grandad had since found it difficult to sleep at night, and to trust people, because his relationships within the family had been strained. Judge Brian Cummings said the offence was the “most personal kind of fraud” and that it had caused a “serious, detrimental impact on the victim”. Paul Wood, defending, described Bridgen as being at a low point in his life when he committed the fraud. Brigden was given a 13-month sentence for fraud, and another four months for committing an offence while on bail.

Uncovered wells are to blame for deaths THOUSANDS of wells have been dug across Malaga, because of the over-exploitation of water, according to environmental group Ecologistas en Acción. Yet they are only deemed illegal if left unsealed.
The accusation came as rescue teams pulled the lifeless body of two-year-old Julen from a well last Saturday, as reported in this edition. But as Spain continues to mourn the tot’s death, attention turns to the unsealed wells, which are often dug to steal water for irrigation. Water could have been stolen from the well Julen was trapped in, after the builder who drilled it stressed that he had sealed it, which means the cover must have been removed. Meanwhile,
Ecologistas en Acción estimates that 60% of Malaga wells are left without a seal, which renders them illegal. The area’s Ecologistas coordinator, Antonio Amarillo, revealed: “In the last few days, we have registered an increase of people who have contacted us to denounce the existence of illegal wells.” A man aged 45, out dogwalking last Sunday, was found dead after falling into an unsealed Malaga well, in Villanueva de Trabuco, some 20km away from where the toddler died.
He had been reported to the Guardia Civil at 11.10pm after leaving home at noon and failing to return, and another search was activated. Two official rescue groups ended the search at 2.50am, when the man’s body was found inside a well. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the circumstances. But there was no sign of the dog. In another incident, a 61-yearold woman was rescued alive last Sunday, but she was suffering from hypothermia after falling into a well in Salcedo, in the Basque Country.

Sexy couples harm Ibiza’s sand dunes SEXY couples are damaging Ibiza’s sand dunes with their love-making on the beach, environmentalists warn.
THE Guardia Civil are investigating a tourist who reported that he had been a victim of theft in Gran Canaria.
The foreign tourist told the Guardia that he’d had €8,300 stolen from his bank account, while he was drugged inside a club, in the south of the island. The tourist complained officially on 23rd January, telling officers that he had been partying with two women, who then took him to a club. He then claimed that he must have been drugged because he could not
remember anything else. In his statement, he claimed that several transactions had been made on his credit card, totalling €8,300. The Guardia began to investigate, immediately, by speaking with witnesses, as well as checking CCTV from the establishments in which the man frequented, when, he claimed, he’d been drugged and mugged, But officers discovered that the individual spent the money at various clubs in the vicinity, splashing his cash voluntarily. That is why the man is being investigated for being the brains behind a simulated crime.

The delicate dunes of the Ses Salines Natural Park could be at risk of erosion, because of tourist rompers. The Es Cavallet beach, now a hotspot for casual sex, is among Spain’s top hook-up locations. Protected areas of the beach are fenced off, but
couples looking to get it on are jumping over the barriers frequently. “Free access like this is causing the break-up of the dunes and their structures,” biologist Joan Carles Palerm told Diaro de Mallorca. He added: “The system that maintains them is very complex, and any alteration, such as this continuous activity, affects them fatally.” All the outdoor love-making is also thought to be disturbing small plants, which grow in the dunes and are crucial
for the survival of the fragile ecosystem. Geologists have described the sexual activity in the area as a “non-stop frenzy”, while warning that Mallorca and Menorca beaches are also under threat. Es Cavallet is an officiallyrecognised nudist beach, and, with its 1km of white sand, it is also a popular spot for playing volleyball. The south end of the beach also has an active gay scene, and LGBT hook-ups often begin at the beach’s famous Chiringuito.

PM’s €235bn pledge to counter climate change
Gang warfare leaves two women injured TWO young women, involved in a mass gang fight in the early hours of last Sunday morning, were taken to La Laguna’s University Hospital with severe bruising.
The fight kicked off at around the unseemly hour of 4.30am, in the Maritime Park car park, in Santa Cruz. An emergency call was made, requesting assistance by a caller who said a brutal fight had broken out. The emergency ambulance was sent, immediately, along €235bn climate-change bid
PRIME Minister Pedro Sanchez has pledged to spend €235bn over the next 10 years, in a bid to combat Spain’s climate change.
He even apologised for the country’s climate over the last decade, blaming the hostile, economic crisis suffered by Spain for around six years.
A new energy-and-climatechange plan is expected to be submitted to the European Union soon, said Sanchez, which will realise investments of €235bn from 2021-2030. The Spanish Premier added that a new, eco-friendly legislation will be presented to parliament by the end of this week. “Spain is ready to contribute to creating a global
economy that is prosperous, fair and ecological,” said the PM, at a high-level discussion in Madrid. He added that he was aiming for the new eco-conscious country to become “socially just”, while keeping labourers such as coal-miners in mind. They face losing their jobs, as Spain plans to switch to 100% renewable electricity by 2050.

Upon arrival, the ambulance medics began helping two injured women, one aged 21, who had severe bruising, as well as head injuries. The other woman, 22, also had significant bruising, and both were taken to the University Hospital for treatment, as well as close observation. Once the National Police had questioned witnesses about the fight, they were able to disperse the crowd, regaining peace and normality to the area.
Four men killed as region floods
AT least four men died last Thursday, following heavy rainfall and flooding in Asturias, where large parts of the region were submerged under water.
Roads and railway tracks have collapsed following the onslaught of rainfall which began the previous morning, earlier than it had been predicted. The lifeless body of one man, 41, was found in Tineo on Thursday, following his disappearance at around
2pm the previous day. Another victim, a year younger, died in the early hours of this morning, after he left his car and was washed away down a 500-metre slope in Salas. Elsewhere, a 62-year-old man died at around 8am, while trying to pick up two of his friends. As he left his vehicle, the water proved too strong and carried him away to his death. A 70-year-old also died that morning, when his car was carried 50 metres, following a road-collapse in La Colladiella.
Horses killed in a terrifying assault A DOG walker in Manilva, on the Malaga border, found the body of a suspected narcotics dealer, discarded on a beach, popular with expats. The discovery followed a high-speed sea chase
last Sunday afternoon, the drug-traffickers evading police in their powerful rubber dinghy. Later, at 5pm, customs officials found the same boat, but again the wanted man escaped, using a larger boat with three, 350 horsepower engines. Neither chase resulted in a collision, or anyone falling
from the boat, said police. But an abandoned boat, drifting at sea, was towed to Algeciras, yet it is not known whether it is one of the boats chased. When police were alerted by the dog-walker about the corpse, they suspected it was linked to one of the boats. The incident is now “under investigation”.
FOUR horses, belonging to a longendangered species of “garranos”, were beaten to death in Northern Spain, having been found in Galicia with severe head injuries.
Two neighbours reportedly discovered their bodies, along with another five horses, lined up, one behind the other, in a “cattle deworming corridor”. The four animals, along with the other five, were locked up between two iron railings
in that deworming corridor in Oia, in the south of Vigo. But the lucky five were able to escape. The horses, all microchipped, belonged to four owners, located in various municipalities of the region. Farmers said the animals, living on a high, secluded area known as O Areeiro, “never bothered anyone”. An iron bar, believed to have been used to batter the poor animals, was found at the scene. The Guardia Civil’s Seprona, a special nature and animals protection service, have opened an investigation into the brutal attack.

Grandma’s 60th birthday led to heartache holiday THE family of a Belfast woman, who died suddenly while celebrating her 60th birthday in Fuerteventura, were left “absolutely devastated”.
Marie Farrelly, from Turf Lodge, was on holiday with family members when she fell ill. The mother-of-two, who had fought ovarian cancer for the past seven years, had been gifted the trip by her daughter, Eilish, and son, Sean, for her 60th birthday, on 2nd January. Eilish, who shared the same birthday, also went on the trip, along with Marie’s husband Owen. But just a day after arriving, Marie fell ill as the family were heading to her birthday dinner, although she soon recovered. After spending the next few days sight-seeing, the group left for their flight home on 16th January. But Marie became unwell again, on board the plane, as it prepared for take-off. The easyJet air crew called for medical assistance, and
Terrorist leader is home
Eilish said a steward was quick to react. “We got her on the flight, but one of the air hostesses thought she looked ill,” she said. “The airport doctor came on board, and then an ambulance arrived and she was taken off.” At Fuerteventura hospital, Marie was given a CT scan and had X-rays, and it was
found that her heart was enlarged and she had some fluid on the lungs, although this later settled. The grandma was kept in hospital over the next few days, and Eilish said she was on a glucose drip and “getting better”. On Saturday night, Eilish left the hospital when her mother fell asleep. But when she
returned the next morning, she was told her mother had died shortly before 7am, from cancer. Eilish, 34, told The Irish News that her mother was an “amazing” person, who was always there for others. “She never once complained,” she added. “She was definitely a fighter. She was the strongest person.”
Should parents have the power to okay drug tests for teens? LAWMAKERS and paediatricians are dubious about a non-binding motion in the Canary Islands to allow drug tests on teenagers, at the request of their parents.
The Canarian Parliament urged its regional government last week to include a drug test, when 14-year-old teenagers get their health check-up, should the parents request it. According to the non-binding motion, this could be a significant, preventive measure. But do parents have the right to make their children have the test? Paediatricians and lawyers argue that there are other, less-aggressive approaches to the problem. But, in any event, they stress, a teenager’s consent is vital. The motion was approved by 44 votes, with only six abstentions from anti-austerity party United Podemos. The pro-arguments claimed that the average
age teenagers begin to consume alcohol, tobacco and cannabis had fallen significantly, and that there was a need to step-up prevention within families and schools. Among youngsters in the Canaries, it has been said, regular use of heroin, hallucinogens, amphetamines, cocaine and ecstasy is not generally perceived as particularly risky. It made sense, then, to introduce blood and urine tests to provide a safety net for 14-year-olds, who could become involved in substance abuse. “We were surprised by the news,” said Agustín
Graffigna, President of the Canaries’ Primary Healthcare Paediatricians’ Association. “There has been no referral to an assessment from the scientific community. Sending someone for analysis should be based on medical criteria, and not on the criteria of the parents. “Making this test generally applicable is not a measure that has been addressed in any of the guidelines. There are other means of prevention, but this is not the right one. And, in practice, it would have to be with the consent of the minor. “Otherwise, we would be invading their privacy with an aggressive examination,
which is what analysis is.” Department of Health sources state that they are unable to comment on the motion, because the wording has still not been finalised. Félix Notario, from the Spanish Society of Adolescent Medicine, and a paediatrician at an Albacete clinic, believes the measures would not be effective, and that their introduction was simply a way for politicians to salve their own conscience. “There’s no need for so many tests,” he said. “One out of four teenagers has consumed substances between the ages of 14 and 18. And if we wait for a test to tell us that our 14-year-old is taking drugs, then we’re coming in late!” Paediatrician María Eugenia Angulo, who spent 16 years in primary healthcare and now works in a Las Palmas health centre in Gran Canaria, said: “We have a duty to inform the patient. “Not long ago, a boy of 12 didn’t want to be examined. I tried to convince him but he refused, and I couldn’t force him to do it.”
A LEADING member of a Basque nationalist terror group has returned to his native Spain, having completed his jail sentence in France. Mikel Albizu Iriarte, who headed the political wing of Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), was arrested in France in 2004. He and others were later found guilty of theft, extortion and other offences. Iriarte, also known as Antza, who was jailed for 20 years, served seven years of the sentence. ETA killed an estimated 853 people, while operational from the late 1950s, until declaring a ceasefire in 2011. Iriarte, son of a Basque nationalist student, was one of the group’s founders.
A new LGBTI hotel to open
A NEW hotel in Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria, should open this Spring, aimed at attracting LGBTI tourists.
Ritual Hoteles also intends to employ, train and encourage the hiring of lesbian, gay, transsexual, bisexual and intersex staff to work in its new hotel. This will be its fourth hotel, attracting LGBTI tourists and also seeking to employ LGBTI staff to work for the company. It is renovating the holiday complex, previously known as Las Walkirias, which will offer 65 apartments. San Bartolome de Tirajana Mayor, Marco Aurekio Perez, announced this new hotel project at FITUR, the International Tourism Fair in Madrid, saying: “This new apartment hotel will have a privileged location for these important clients. “That’s because it is located a few metres from the Yumbo Centre in Maspalomas, which is the area’s epicentre of LGBTI tourism and leisure activities. “It is also close to Maspalomas Beach and sand dunes, which are popular with tourists.”

No-deal Brexit could send thousands of expats home
A BRITISH Government memo, sent to Whitehall departments according to reports, reveals that officials are preparing for the return home of up to 250,000 expatriates, if a Brexit no-deal scenario occurs.
The memo states that officials expect between 50,000 and 250,000 British expatriates living in the EU could return to the UK, if the country leaves the bloc without a deal. Around 150,000 Britons could return in the year following the UK’s EU exit, with around 30,000 moving back in the first three months under a “worst-case” scenario. An additional 100,000 are forecast to return in the following year. The Department for Work and Pensions predicted around 50,000 could return to Britain as part of more optimistic estimates. Roughly 1.3 million British citizens live across the EU, and around 40% of returning expats could be pensioners, according to UK Government sources.
Gang kidnapped migrant children
It means that public services, including the NHS and welfare system, could feel the pressure as a result. A Government spokesperson told the British media that predictions could vary, especially should expats receive reassurance, from Spain and other EU countries, that their current living situation and rights will not be affected, if the UK does leave without a deal.
Concerns have also risen about a possible “hostile environment” towards returning British expats, if they try to claim benefits. But the Government spokesperson said: “We are looking at options, to see what more we can do to ensure that any returning UK nationals get immediate access to the benefits and support, to which they are entitled.”
FIVE members of a gang, accused of kidnapping migrant children from shelter homes in Spain, and demanding ransoms from their families in Morocco, have been arrested.
Guardia Civil officers believe the Spanish and Moroccan men, aged between 27 and 36, have kidnapped at least 20 children. During raids on two properties in Puerto Real, in Cadiz, officers found a young person who had been reported missing from
a nearby migrant centre. According to reports, the gang were alleged to have approached the youngsters, offering to help them gain residency permits. Instead, according to a boy removed from a facility for unaccompanied migrant children in La Linea de La Concepcion, they held them prisoner in squalid conditions before transporting them across the country. The gang then contacted relatives in Morocco, demanding ransoms of up to €500. During the raid, officers found 10 mobile phones, three computers, three kilos of hashish and €3,600.

Brexit optimism propels the pound to multi-month highs
By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
THE pound is roaring ahead so far, this year, with Brexit news helping to propel sterling to new multimonth highs, over the past couple of weeks.
This has seen GBP/EUR strike a 19-month high, as the pairing rose from €1.11 to €1.15, while EUR/GBP has fallen from £0.89 to £0.86. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has climbed from $1.28 to $1.32, while EUR/USD held at $1.14. The pound has found considerable support in recent weeks, with GBP investors becoming increasingly confident that the UK will avoid a no-deal Brexit, despite MPs overwhelmingly rejecting Theresa May’s EU with-
drawal deal, earlier in the month. The euro stumbled in the second half of January, because it was undermined by a mix of gloomy, Eurozone data, as well as increasingly dovish signals from the European Central Bank.
Doctors’ cancer miracle makes history in Spain
SPANISH doctors have performed breakthrough surgery on a patient with terminal, Stage 4, pancreatic cancer, for the first time in the country’s history.
Surgeons at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital successfully treated the patient, who had previously been considered “inoperable”. The pioneering surgery involves a new technique which punctures the tumour, penetrating through its protective ‘shield’, allowing cancerous cells to be burned away with heat. It is the first time this advanced procedure has been used in Spain on pancreatic adenocarcinoma, inoperable with traditional techniques. And, until now, patients with this aggressive form of cancer could only be offered palliative chemotherapy.
The breakthrough comes as the result of a clinical trial at the hospital known as PELICAN, which is also being tested at 18 medical centres across Europe by a team of Dutch experts. Elisabeth Pando, a doctor at the Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgery Service, stressed that the trial “is about offering an alternative or a treatment”, for those who are usually considered inoperable. Pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. But doctors predict that it will soon be the second cause of death, while only one in five cases can be operated on. Experts say the reason is because pancreatic tumours are usually very close to arteries and major veins. And, despite the team’s success, Pando stresses that the study is still in its early experimental phase, and that more time is needed to obtain definitive results.
At the same time, the US dollar has found itself fluctuating in recent weeks, as the US government shutdown limited the release of domestic data, and resulted in USD becoming increasingly sensitive to external influences.
Brexit is to remain a key catalyst for movement in the pound in the coming weeks, with an upcoming parliamentary debate on Theresa May’s “Plan B”, likely to be in the spotlight. Meanwhile, the release of the Eurozone’s latest GDP
figures will likely be in focus for EUR investors, with the euro poised to soften, if growth remained subdued in the fourth quarter. Finally, a temporary pause in the US government shutdown will result in a sizeable US data dump, over the next couple of weeks, potentially prompting some swings in the US dollar. Why priceless Guarrazar treasure was abandoned
THE mystery has confused and intrigued Spanish archaeologists for 150 years. But, until now, experts had no idea why. More than 20, glittering, gold Visigoth crowns, wine goblets and jewel-encrusted crucifixes, were ditched in the middle of a field, 15 kilometres from Toledo. Until now, experts had no idea why the priceless Treasure of Guarrazar had been abandoned in the Guadamur district, but the
intrigue inspired two books, Jose Calvo Poyato’s The Last Visigoth Treasure and Pedro Antonio Alonso Revenga’s The Hidden Treasure. But Spanish archaeologist Juan Manuel Rojas has finally solved the puzzle, following a joint investigation with Guadamur Town Hall, which has led to an established archaeological site, now open to the public. The Treasure tale’s story began in 711, when Tariq Ibn Ziyad’s troops invaded the Spanish peninsula, before heading to the Visigoth capital of Toledo. It was previously believed
that the Toledo Christians had made a quick visit to hide the royal treasures under two graves in the field until the coast was clear. True, they were found 1,100 years later, but Rojas said: “It made no sense to hide them in a field.” Then, after some digging, he discovered 30 metre-length walls, a basilica, the remains of a palace, a Visigoth graveyard, and even a guest house for pilgrims. His research led to the revelation that the place where the treasure was hidden was not a field at all, but a religious complex!

Inside Europe: 10 Years Of Turmoil Monday 4th February, BBC2, 21.00
Episode Two, Going For Broke, takes us deep inside crucial European Councils as the leaders and their Ministers try to avert financial disaster. It is a clash between the cautious Angela Merkel and the feisty Nicolas Sarkozy over how to deal with the near-bankruptcy of Greece. The crisis spreads to threaten the euro itself. It begins when Prime Minister George Papandreou comes into office to discover the disastrous state of the country’s finances. The fate of the EU’s most ambitious project, the single currency, rested on how the EU leaders dealt with the problem. The story includes the furious row between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the head of the European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet, another Frenchman, over who should pay the bill. Those present also describe how President Barack Obama brought the German Chancellor to tears. It’s a story that would end, temporarily, with billions of Euros being pumped into the economy, riots against austerity, and two democratically elected Prime Ministers resigning. The crisis would explode back onto the European agenda in January 2015 with the election of the Alexis Tsipras’ radical left-wing Syriza government in Greece. With just a month before Greece again ran out of bailout money, his appointment of Marxist professor Yanis Varoufakis won Greece no friends in European capitals, especially Berlin. After receiving a bailout extension until the end of June, Alexis Tsipras shocked his fellow leaders by calling a referendum on the terms offered by the European Union. Grexit looked a real possibility, as more than 60 percent of Greeks voted against the EU’s terms. Yet instead Tsipras decided to return to Brussels to seek another bailout. With the help of French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Italian Renzi, Alexis Tsipras faced down German Chancellor Angela Merkel and agreement was reached. Greece would remain in the Eurozone.

Analysis comes from Osi Umenyiora, Jason Bell and Mike Carlson, with commentary provided by the CBS pairing of Jim Nantz and Tony Romo.

Martin Clunes Islands of America Tuesday 5th February, ITV1, 21.00
The first port of call on Martin’s journey is the lush, tropical Ha-waii. His exploration looks beyond Hawaii’s image as a tourist paradise, crammed with sun-kissed beaches and world class surfing, and into the havoc wreaked by advancing lava fields and smoking craters. Martin arrives just as one of the most devastating eruptions in Hawaii’s recorded history hits worldwide news. Lava from Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, on the southern most Big Island, is destroying homes as it continues to spread. Resi-dents have to be evacuated to temporary shelters. Martin meets the people who were displaced, relying on the chari-ty of other islanders for bare essentials as their homes were de-stroyed by the unstoppable progress of the black wall of molten lava. The island of Molokai is just a short hop from the bustle of the popular Waikiki Beach, yet it’s a world apart. At its eastern end is Halawa Valley, an isolated spot still sacred to traditional Hawaiians, whose Polynesian ancestors settled here 1,000 years ago. This is one of the oldest continually inhabited human settlements in Hawaii. Martin meets a man whose family have never left this valley, even after the Tsunami of 1946. He learns how they have farmed there for centuries and sees how they still practice the same techniques as they farm and fish to live in this lush and sacred historic land-scape. Leaving Hawaii Martin flies 2,500 miles north to the islands of Alaska, where the contrast couldn’t have been more extreme, from tropical rain forests to snow-fringed glaciers; from crowded beaches to some of America’s most sparsely populated territories. On the biggest of Alaska’s islands, Kodiak, Martin goes in search of the legendary Kodiak bear: the world’s biggest brown bear. Isolated from mainland bears since the last Ice Age 12,000 years ago, they’ve grown bigger even than the fearsome mainland Griz-zly. His patience, waiting for six hours, is rewarded with sightings of eight bears including a mother and her two cubs. The series producer is Ian Leese, who also directs episodes one and three. Tom McCarthy produces and directs episodes two and four. The executive producers are Bill Jones and Philippa Braithwaite.

Africa with Ade Adepitan BBC2, 21.00
www.canarianweekly.com 1st February 2019 - 7th February 2019
The first leg of Ade Adepitan’s epic four-part journey around Africa takes him from Cape Verde, through Senegal and Ivory Coast to Nigeria. Cape Verde, a group of tiny volcanic islands in the Atlantic, is the westernmost country in Africa. On the bleak and beautiful island of Fogo, Ade visits a community living in the shadow of an active volcano. The last eruption left half the village buried in lava and Ade sees one family’s living room which is now half full of black rock. Ade’s next stop is Senegal. He visits Goree Island, a staging post in the transAtlantic slave trade. Today it’s a place of pilgrimage for many people of African descent, including President Barack Obama who visited in 2013, and in an emotional encounter, Ade discovers that members of his own tribe were the most highly-prized slaves. Ade travels down the coast to a fishing village, where he hears how Africa is still being exploited. After hauling in the nets, he finds out that much of Senegal’s catch is being taken by foreign companies, and turned into fishmeal to feed Western livestock. In Ivory Coast, Ade meets people who share the dream of getting to Europe. Only this time, they’re footballers, training to become professionals in Europe’s big leagues. It doesn’t always work out, as many are scammed into giving their cash to dodgy football agents. Ade also visits Nigeria, the country he was born in. He begins by meeting some old friends - polio survivors like him, who love sport - playing the amazing game of para soccer on the streets of Lagos. Travelling out of Lagos, Ade discovers a country in chaos. Under armed escort, he hears about a war that’s barely been reported in the west, which has created hundreds of thousands of refugees. As the government struggles to get it under control, Nigeria’s best hope lies in the hard work and ingenuity of its people. Ade finishes his journey at Nigeria’s equivalent to Silicon Valley - a company that believes tech can transform the continent.

Two Doors Down BBC2, 22.00
With their house in turmoil in the midst of the redecoration, new Latimer Crescent residents Alan and Michelle take refuge from the floor sanding with an overnight stay in neighbours Beth and Eric’s house. Michelle is keen that they are not going to be a nuisance and tries to get to bed as early as possible, but just as she heads upstairs, Christine arrives bearing rhubarb. Hot on her heels are Cathy and Colin, who turn up with the leftovers from their restaurant meal, which they generously hand over to Beth. Alan has realised it is not easy to leave the sawdust behind - discovering it in the most inconvenient of places. It is decided that the only solution to completely rid it from all cracks is for him to have a bath. Michelle finally goes to bed but leaves the others to chat about her. The discussion gets a bit pointed when Cathy weighs in, unable to contain her jealousy of Michelle’s new relationship with Beth. And when Alan reappears freshly scrubbed of sawdust, he discovers that he quite likes rhubarb. Beth Baird is played by Arabella Weir, and her husband Eric by Alex Norton, with Doon Mackichan as Cathy, Jonathan Watson as her husband Colin, with Elaine C Smith as neighbour Christine. Jamie Quinn plays the Bairds’ son Ian, and Kieran Hodgson is Gordon. New neighbours Alan and Michelle are played by ‘Grado’ (Graeme Stevely) and Joy McAvoy.

It’s out with the old and in with the new as the time-travelling pupils and teachers leave behind the ‘60s Secondary Modern and embrace their 1970s comprehensive school. For the first time the decade sees both boys and girls through a more inclusive, vocational and academic education. As the years pass and the schools become more progressive, the pupils’ voices become more powerful, and - in some extreme cases - the rules are out in favour of free school. The pupils learn the value of the burgeoning airline commerce market as they train in many roles, all from the classroom, as well as immersing in Home Economics and cooking the school dinner.

Dedicated miners find Julen, but it’s too late
IT is believed that the borehole into which tragic, two-year-old Julen Roselló fell on 13th January, and, subsequently died, lacked official permits from regional and municipal authorities.
The 13-day incident began when the family were on the rural property of a relative in Totalán, where they had planned to cook a paella, and the toddler, who wandered off, toppled into the hole, measuring barely 25 centimetres across. From the moment the alarm was raised that afternoon by his parents, Vicky Garcia and Jose
Rosello, emergency teams worked around the clock to locate the child. But the difficult terrain led to the rescue work taking nearly two weeks, given the toughness of the rock which had to be excavated, as well as the previous work, necessary to allow access for heavy machinery to the area. Alfonso Rodríguez
Gómez de Celis, central government delegate in Andalusia, said the operation was an “unprecedented, colossal mission,” in which 85,000 tons of earth had to be moved. “It was an obstacle race,” he added. “It was as though the earth mountain were defending itself.” The final work by eight specialist miners to
Drug-traffickers used drones for protection
EXPERT drone pilots, who were highly trained, helped a drug-trafficking ring smuggle more than six tonnes of hashish into southern Spain, police have revealed. Two of the 12-strong gang, who were experts in the use of state-of-the-art drones, had been using the unmanned aircraft to make sure the coasts were clear from police. The Spanish gang, comprising two women and 10 men, then unloaded hashish from so-called RHIB boats to the shores of Almeria, the Costa del Sol and Cadiz. Between November
and December last year, the group, based out of the Campo de Gibraltar, brought more than six tonnes of the green drug, from Morocco to southern Spain. They were rumbled by the UDYCO drug unit this month, after being under investigation since last April. Police intercepted a 600kg drop off the
coast of Almeria, before raiding four of the gang member’s La Linea homes. Eight high-end vehicles, two large boats and a large sum of cash were seized in the raids. Police also found the latest generation of drones, which had been used to carry out patrols along Spain’s southern coastline. The drones were used
to ensure a “safe radius”, along the shores and on the roads behind them. The traffickers were able to monitor police presence before and during the transportation of the drugs, from the boats to the beach, and also the vehicles waiting for them. Also seized were a radar, frequencyinhibitor, numerous high-tech communication devices and several state-of-the-art mobile phones. The gang were working in collaboration with several key players in the Campo de Gibraltar’s drug world.
reach the borehole began last Thursday at 5.33pm, and lasted around 32 hours. During the process, they had to set off a series of small explosions to break through the rock. They also had problems shoring up the vertical shaft, before the miners could descend in a specially-designed cage. Gómez de Celis added: “The position of Julen’s body determined that it was a fast free-fall, to 71 metres, which is where he was found.” He also detailed the last phase of the rescue mission, which ended with the poor little tot’s body being recovered in the early hours of last Saturday morning.
“The whole operation was carried out urgently, and at the depth he was eventually found,” he said. “Rescuers worked with urgency, but also delicacy, because the aim was to reach him without causing him any harm.” The child was located at 1.25am by two specialist miners and a Guardia Civil officer, who, since Friday afternoon, had worked alongside them at the bottom of the rescue shaft. The body was removed at 4am. For Julen’s parents, it was yet another searing heartache because, just 20 months earlier, they had lost another son, three-year-old Oliver, who died of a heart attack.

AUTHORITIES in Spain are telling would-be buyers and tenants to use common sense when dealing with socalled home owners.
Here’s an extract from an email received recently by a property website user, looking for a place to rent in Madrid: “Hi! Thanks for taking the time to look at my property. My name is Ana and I own the apartment. I am currently working in the UK, but if you are interested, and want to know more about renting it, get in touch and I will send the step-by-step procedure.” The ad looked interesting, but when the would-be renter contacted the genuine owner, she was told that the original message was written in dodgy Spanish, and its content raised alarm bells. She felt extremely wary, reported the conversation to the police… and carried on looking! And if you believe the woman was being too cautious, think again! As a Civil Guard spokesman pointed out, the email contained several classic giveaways, one being the glaring, grammatical errors. “Ana” used the masculine form of owner (el propietario) as opposed to the feminine (la propietaria). She also said
www.canarianweekly.com 1st February 2019 - 7th February 2019
Beware of the clever property fraudsters she was in the UK, suggesting that making direct contact with her would be unlikely. More importantly, the suggested payment procedure was an attempt at circumventing oversight, by the website used to make contact. Otherwise, there was nothing odd about the apartment itself. The price was not especially high, and the premises were attractive, but not disproportionate to the suggested rent. Captain Alberto Redondo, from the Civil Guard’s cybercrime unit, said:
“Obviously, the scammers adapt their modus operandi as they go. And those who were once using clumsy swindles, are getting more sophisticated.” Sadly, cybercrime is climbing by 20% every year. But while that figure covers all internet fraud, the data related to online property scams alone is hard to single out. Yet these scams peak at certain periods of the year, such as the holiday season, because they tend to target short-term rentals. Property websites keep a keen eye out for scammers. Ferran Font, of Pisos.com, said they detected 10 to 15 fraudulent listings every day, and took them down immediately. During peak periods, that number could be as much as 50 every day. Font said there was often a surge of fraudulent activity in February, as people began to plan their Easter break. True, the property websites act as a filter, sifting out the
main culprits, though some still manage to get through the net. At Pisos, a team of six people cast a wary eye over new ads, with a procedure that includes a phone call, to verify that the contact number is correct. “It is rare for anyone to slip through our filters,” said Font, who admitted that it was increasingly difficult to spot these types of scam. “What were once clumsy swindles are getting more sophisticated.” Fotocasa is another property website aware of the increasing professionalism of scammers, which, they say, are often run “by international mafias”. According to Fotocasa data gathered, up to 10 dodgy ads are weeded out every day, from the 80,000-odd posted. And it is no wonder that all property websites suggest that common sense is the best preventive measure. Beatriz Toribio, an official at Fotocasa, owned by Norwegian company
Schibsted, said they have a filter system which automatically deletes listings that don’t comply with a series of conditions. Primarily, there is a code sent to the advertiser’s phone. This code should then figure on the ad to guarantee that the number is correct. If not, the listing is dropped. Idealista, which follows a similar protocol, said their team responds to all complaints by reporting them to the authorities. They also contact those users who have been in contact with fake advertisers. All the experts offer basic advice, such as using secure pages, which start with https and carry the padlock symbol, as well as making sure the applications you are downloading are bona fide, and checking the owner out on Google. It is also worth being wary of anyone who asks for payment in advance, and of those properties at suspiciouslycheap prices.
Hero officers save a baby
TWO police officers saved the life of a 14-month-old baby, who was unconscious and had stopped breathing in Cordoba, Andalucia.
The duo, from Lucena-Cabra National Police, hailed as “heroes”, carried out the Heimlich Manoeuvre (abdominal thrusts), before the baby was transferred to a nearby hospital. The cops had been patrolling nearby Lucena when the incident began. Several people got out of the vehicle, one of them carrying an unconscious baby in her arms.
The officers confirmed that the baby’s eyes were closed, and that she wasn’t reacting at all. When they realised there was no pulse, and no breathing, they realised that her airways were obstructed and began the Heimlich Manoeuvre. Happily, they were able to get the child breathing again, keeping the baby stable until the emergency services arrived. And. after several hours in hospital, the little tot was discharged, in “perfect condition”. A National Police source praised the officers’ performance, saying they had saved the baby’s life”.

By Justin Charles FOLLOWING his recent conversation with Vinnie Jones, Oasis Fm DJ Justin Charles chatted this week to Vinnie’s co-star, Hollywood actor Sam Medina (Venom, Alita: Battle Angel), on the set of Ron Hopper’s Misfortune, which is on location in our capital, Santa Cruz.
Ron Hopper’s Misfortune tells the story of Sarah Romanova, a beautiful, young, Russian woman, who decides to meet her old friend from Hades. Justin Charles: Tell us about the role you play in Ron Hopper’s Misfortune. Sam Medina: I play a gangster who has to attempt to persuade The Ferryman (Vinnie Jones) to take the girl across to the other side. We are both warriors in the movie, but in this film we use our hearts and minds to make decisions, so we are warriors in every sense of the word. Jay Falero (the director) has written such an amazing script, which really allows us both to develop the characters. This project is so interesting, and there is a refreshing air of excitement on the set, from cast and crew alike, because it is so different. JC: Have you worked with Vinnie Jones before? SM: Yes. We have worked

together a couple of times on the movies Blood Out and Locked Down, and have been friends for a few years. JC: Have you ever been to Tenerife before? SM: No, I haven’t, but I love it. We are filming up in the mountains above Santa Cruz, and, coming from LA, you can really tell the difference regarding how clean the air is here. This island is beautiful. My wife lived in Tenerife for many years, so she is very happy to be back, while I
am on set. She has been introducing me to all the amazing food that you guys have here, and I am eating way more than I should be. The desserts are fantastic, and I have put on so much weight. I’m going to need to train hard, when I return to Los Angeles, to get rid of it. JC: You train in various martial arts, don’t you? SM: Yes, I do. I have a 3rd-degree, black belt in Taekwondo, and I have also trained in the
ancient Japanese art of Okinawa Kempo. I am currently studying Krav Magá, with Martin Luna from Tenerife, which is a military, self-defence and fighting system, developed for the Israeli Security Forces. It’s really tough, but I’m really enjoying it, and will carry on when I get home. JC: What has been a career highlight for you? SM: I think working with Tom Hardy, who is a hero of mine, on Venom, was pretty cool. He is such an amazing actor, and I loved the scenes I did with him. It really was an honour to work with Tom, and I learned so much. JC: So what’s next for Sam Medina? SM: When I finish filming Ron Hopper’s Misfortune, I will fly home to attend the Red Carpet World Premiere of Alita: Battle Angel. I play a 10-foot robot called Stringer, and it’s my first
animated movie. It was written by James Cameron. He had the idea while making Avatar, but didn’t get the time to direct the project, so he handed it over to Robert Rodriguez to direct. To be starring alongside two Oscar-winning actors, Christoph Waltz (Django Unchained, Inglorious Bastards) and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book), is mind blowing. I’m really excited about the work I am doing right now. JC: So do you think we will get you back to Tenerife? SM: Absolutely! I’m hoping Jamie Falero will do the Red Carpet Premiere of Ron Hopper’s Misfortune here. It would be great to come back, and I think my wife may have something to say if I don’t. You can come and do a proper, sit-down interview with me, and come to the Premiere. But only if you bring the cakes! That’s the deal, brother!

Church marathon is proof that Tenerife sun can heal By Rev Rachel Ganney
ST FRANCIS comprises a team of Church of England churches in the south of Tenerife. And, there are few things we do together most of the time, because most of us belong to one church only.
As the assistant priest, I wanted to find a way of reminding myself and others that our churches are closer together, and more linked, than we realise, generally. With this is mind, my husband Paul and I, and, of course, Billy the dog, are embarking on a walk, from east to west, joining up the churches of San Blas, San Eugenio and Los Gigantes. We’re planning to walk along the coast, as much as we can, and we believe the distance will be about 60km (37 miles). But it’s hard to be sure because some areas don’t have a coastal path, so we’ll be
figuring it out as we go along. As well as the opportunity
to prove that our churches are, literally, within “walking distance” of each other,
although perhaps not as a regular occurrence, this is also something of a
personal journey for me. When I came to Tenerife 4½ years ago, I was so ill that I struggled to climb a flight of stairs. If someone had told me then that I’d be taking on a walk like this now, or even running in 10km events, I would have been extremely sceptical. But, thanks to the grace of God, and the Tenerife sunshine, here I am! We’re setting off from San Blas at 12 noon this Sunday (3rd Feb) stopping for coffee at 10am at San Eugenio on Wednesday (6th) and finishing our journey during the 6pm service at Los Gigantes on Sunday (10th). Please come and say hello if you see us at these places, or en route. You can also follow our progress online, and see our photos at tenerifesouthchurches.com/ walk2019.html. You can sponsor us, using forms in the churches, or online at www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/stfrancis]www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/st-francis

The income generated here is extremely vital to the work we do with the cats and kittens on the island. Our veterinary bills are huge, and we rely on the kindness of our supporters to keep us going, not only with their much-needed donations of money, but also the great assortment of items they give us to sell. We have customers from various countries, and many visit us from all over Tenerife. Holidaymakers return, year after year, eager to snap up a bargain. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices, as well as household effects, toys and jigsaws, and beautiful jewellery. Meson Era Las Mozas Restaurant
Delicious ribs take a lot of beating... and eating! IF you’ve never tucked into the finest rack of ribs ever, head for Valle San Lorenzo’s Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant, or The Courtyard, as it’s known affectionately by many devotee Brits.
Its Canarian food truly is spectacular, and the spacious premises actually feature a courtyard, complete with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful, indoor restaurant. Some friends, who are happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal, maybe two or three times a year. And guess where they go? And guess what they always have? Ribs! And no wonder! This is a veritable oasis, tucked away down a tiny, side street of Valle San Lorenzo, behind the Catholic church. If you’re coming from the Los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow the road around until you come across it, on the right, complete with car park. Las Mozas has been there for many years, so, if you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there before. If not, you don’t know what you’re missing!
It was a lovely evening, so we chose to sit in the covered courtyard area outside, complete with real, hanging plants, and a host of long,
trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups, as well as individual tables for pairs and foursomes. On colder evenings, less-
hardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multi-lingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. Before long, hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red, together with the not-to-be-missed, home-made Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) were brought to the table by our friendly waiter. For starters, we shared a reasonably-priced dish of garlic prawns, fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge, mixed salad. Las Mozas is famed for its ribs,
but we felt like breaking with tradition. So, for the main event, I chose beefsteak, and what graced my plate were two large pieces of thin steak. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the melt-in-yourmouth Canarian potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return, time after time. My work colleague chose the T-bone steak, which, honestly, was bigger than the plate itself! But he made good progress, tucking into it, until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply had no room left for dessert, but enjoyed two cups of their tasty coffee, instead. All in all, we had a superb evening. The restaurant is spotlessly clean, you are provided with attentive, excellent service, and the main reason you’re there is for the food. And that is spot-on! To reserve a table, call 922 765 597. The restaurant is open from 1-11pm, and it’s no wonder business is booming. Las Mozas is open six days a week, and is closed on Mondays. There is ample free car-parking. For more information, check out the website www.eralasmozas. com - or find them on Facebook.

Food suppliers battle to check obesity NATIONAL health authorities have announced a radical crackdown on sugar, salt and saturated fat in supermarket goods, and have, so far, recruited nearly 400 companies to support them. Around 4,000 packaged products, including “ready meals”, will be affected by the new scheme, designed to tackle obesity. By the year 2020, food producers already signed up have pledged to slash levels of refined sugar, saturated fats and salt by 10%.
Yet the Ministry of Health says its drive to improve nutritional quality on the high street “is here to stay, extending far beyond the year 2020” The food industry, including manufacturers, the catering trade, distributors and vending-machine franchises,
have actually been working on improving nutritional quality for several years. In addition, they have been calling for Spain’s Government to complement their efforts with more campaigns, especially encouraging physical activity. Packaged and processed food is particularly crucial to target, since the National Institute of Statistics (INE) has proved that lowest-income households are most likely to eat a poor diet, and ignore exercise. Thus, both factors
lead to a greater obesity problem in the poor than in the wealthy. Figures show that, in Spain, 54% of the adult population and 40% of children are clinically overweight, while actual obesity, defined as being above set weightheight ratios and BMI measurements, affects 17% of adults and 18% of children. Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo, who believes the scheme has been “a hit”, has praised the “enormous efforts” of the food industry,

By Val Sainsbury THE harmful effects of energy drinks go beyond their caffeine content, and may adversely affect cardiac health.
There are more than 500 energy drink products available on the market, and, while both manufacturers and fans claim that these drinks are just as safe as caffeine, an increasing number of associated A and E visits, and deaths, say otherwise. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers caffeine doses of up to 400 mg as generally safe. Apart from caffeine, energy drinks were found to contain four ounces of sugar, several B vitamins, and an energy blend of taurine and other ingredients. As part of a study, a team of researchers at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, enrolled 18 healthy participants, who were instructed to drink a commerciallyavailable energy drink, and a formula with the same caffeine content, but none of the other ingredients. The research team also measured the participants’ bloodpressure levels, and electrocardiogram readings (traces of the electrical activity of the heart). The experts found that the participants’ blood-

pressure levels rose by nearly five points, and remained high for up to six hours. In contrast, drinking the formula resulted in less than one point increase in bloodpressure levels. While the changes did not appear worrisome for healthy individuals, the research team warned that people with heart conditions should exercise caution when consuming these beverages. The energydrink industry claims
that their products are safe because they have no more caffeine than a premium, coffeehouse coffee. However, energy drinks also contain a proprietary “energy blend”, which, typically, consists of stimulants and other additives. Some of these ingredients (including taurine and guarana) have not been FDAapproved as safe in the food supply, and few studies have tested the effects of caffeine
consumption, together with these “novelty” ingredients. On top of that, energy drinks are highly marketed to adolescent boys in ways that encourage risky behaviour, including rapid and excessive consumption. As a result, A and E visits by young people, in connection with energy drinks, are rising. Energy drinks have been associated with elevated blood
pressure in a number of studies. A team of researchers from the Mayo Clinic, in the US, found that consuming one 16-ounce energy drink may raise bloodpressure levels and stresshormone responses. The research team examined 25 healthy participants, and found that, apart from increased blood-pressure levels, the levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine simultaneously grew by nearly 74%, after consuming energy drinks. An analysis in 2013 also noted that energy drinks triggered prolonged electrical activation in cardiac ventricles. This prolonged activation was associated with the onset of life-threatening arrhythmia. Drinking two cans of energy drink a day may raise blood pressure and heart rate in otherwise healthy adults. Other side effects of this type of drink include: Headaches and migraines Too many energy drinks can lead to severe headaches from caffeine withdrawal
symptoms. Increased anxiety Some people are prone to feeling increased anxiety when consuming caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks. Larger doses of caffeine can even spur on fullblown panic attacks. Insomnia Energy drinks do a good job of keeping people awake, but, when abused, they can cause some people to miss sleep altogether. This lack of sleep causes impaired functioning, and it can be dangerous to drive, or perform other concentrationheavy tasks. Type 2 diabetes Because many energy drinks are also very high in sugar, they can eventually wear out the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which leads to Type 2 diabetes. Drug interaction Some of the ingredients in energy drinks can interact with prescription medications, especially those taken for depression. Addiction People can become addicted to caffeine and energy drinks. This can lead to a lack of functioning when unable to have this type of drink, or financial stress from having to buy several energy drinks, daily. Risky behaviour A study published in The Journal of American College Health showed that teens are more likely to take dangerous risks when high on caffeine. This could result in injury or legal trouble. Jitters and nervousness Too much caffeine from energy drinks causes some people to shake and be anxious. This can interfere with performing necessary tasks, or cause emotional issues. Vomiting Too many energy drinks can lead to vomiting. This causes dehydration and acid erosion of teeth and oesophagus, if frequent. Allergic reactions Because of the many ingredients in energy drinks, reactions can occur, from minor itching to airway constriction.

Good point from a tough Málaga
CD Tenerife
FOLLOWING an easy home win against Nastic, Tenerife had a second home game in a row, against second-placed Málaga, who have been playing some lovely football this season.
But coach Oltra’s men were on a high, and it showed as they played really well against the Costa del Sol team, earning a very satisfactory point. Right from the off, this was an intense game, well-fought and balanced with good football, but with few scoring chances. To be fair, both teams were better than the point they got, because the home team passed a demanding exam, and the Andalusians did not lose, in a difficult sce-

nario. In a close first half, Racic and N’Diaye stood out for Tenerife. These physical players made things happen with the ball, and CDT had more possession. The highlights for Tenerife were a high shot from Alberto in the 16th minute, and two headers, by Malbasic in the 33rd minute and Jorge a minute later. Meanwhile, Málaga also assumed an attacking strategy, and Blanco headed a cross wide from Pau Torres in the 25th minute. The dynamics were maintained after the break, and, despite Málaga’s attempt to take control of the match, Tenerife stood firm in a clash which had few mistakes by either side… and few goalscoring chances. Naranjo had a good shot in the 56th minute, but it didn’t trouble Munir in the Málaga goal, and midfielder Pacheco grazed the goal with a shot from edge of the area, two minutes later. Both teams seemed to be waiting for a set-piece chance, and the first fell to the home side. Munir saved a direct corner from Milla in the 72nd minute, and also a close header from Lasso, six minutes later, from

another Tenerife corner. Ontiveros scared the Heliodoro faithful with a 76th-minute effort which grazed the crossbar, and another that needed a good save from Dani in the 87th. Ultimately, no goals came in a tense, pressured match, but, in truth, the finishing from both teams was off-key. Oltra’s “new look” Tenerife offered much more, and two games in, Racic and Lasso have more than earned their
places, with four points from six in their two home games. Although Tenerife are still in 16th place, they are moving in the right direction, and a good win could lift them to a mid-table position. But that’s a big ask in their next game, away to third-placed Deportivo La Coruña tomorrow (Saturday). But their following match, against second-bottom team Córdoba, could be the key.
Rafa set to wed, after his 14-year courtship TENNIS star Raphael Nadal has revealed that he will marry his girlfriend of 14 years, probably this autumn in Mallorca. Rafa proposed to Maria Francisca “Xisca” Perello during a romantic trip to Rome last May, but chose to keep the news private until now. The pair, both from Manacor, in Mallorca, lead independent lives, with Xisca working in insurance, having graduated from the island’s university with a business degree. While she is seen, usually, at the final stages of most tournaments, she is also
behind many of the Rafa Nadal Foundation projects. “He needs space when he is competing, and just the idea of me hanging around and waiting on his needs all day tires me out,” she said. “It would asphyxiate me, and then he would have to be worrying about me. No! If I followed him everywhere, there’s a risk we might stop getting along.” Nadal, 17-time Grand Slam winner, announced the news after his stunning defeat in straight sets by main rival Novak Djokovic, in the Australian Open final last weekend.
In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca last year, the Spaniard hinted that he wouldn’t be ready to start a family until he had retired from tennis. “I keep my commitment with tennis and my happiness,” said Nadal. “I enjoy both, in tennis and outside it. I have a girlfriend, too, and I am not alone in taking decisions.” But he’s not sure about having children. “I don’t know,” he said. “Things are not easy to predict. “At this age, I thought I would have already been a former player, and that I would have started a family.”

Grizzly’s wake-up call! GAFFERS hosted The Pub in a battle of the top teams, and raced into a 4-1 singles lead. But Grizzly rallied his troops and took the doubles and trebles, to earn a respectable draw in a battling comeback.
Suters 20.30 Crew dropped the first two games at home to The Loch-In ‘A’, but they found their form and led 4-3 with the trebles to play. However, the visitors were first to finish, and a 4-4 draw was

The Loch-In Bullseyes welcomed Palms Sports bar and proved too strong on the night, winning 6-2 to maintain their promotion push. Running
La Caleta night run attracts huge entry HUNDREDS of athletes are expected to take part in the 4th La Caleta Night Run tomorrow (Saturday), organised by the Insular Athletics Federation, in collaboration with Adeje Council.
During the day, from 12.30pm, organisers will be hosting a series of social-harmony events, handing out numbers to registered participants, and inviting people to take part in Kangoo and Zumba master-classes. There will also be a Food Truck, as well as DJs present. There are three categories
this year: a 2km “confidence” walk (for children and parents), in addition to a 5km and 10km run. The first 2km event will be staged at 7pm, under the social project, “Moving the Planet”, which asks parents to wear a blindfold and be guided by their children. The project is being held to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion in our society, of everyone with some kind of physical challenge. The event also creates stronger links between family members, and taking part will be a well-known “influencer”, Jesús Hernández, who, at 10, is the youngest sports presenter in Spain, and he’ll

be assisting his father (www. jesushf.com). The 5km and 10km runs begin at 8m, with the prize-giving at 9.30pm. You must register to take part in any of the events, and you can do so at TDC sports shops in Adeje and Cabo Blanco, or online www.conxip.com. All money raised from the inscriptions will be donated to an “athletes without frontiers” organisation, and also to the local La Caleta Residents’ Association. Their members are working to convert the coastal village into a European Cardio Health Space, certified by the European Foundation For Health, Research and Education.

Chuckle, and this inspired victory in the team games to rescue a draw. Good luck to all teams in the Handicap Cup and Plate tonight, especially as the draw has brought out some interesting ties. For more info go to: http://cancertenerife. com/oasisfmdarts/
