Brexit – Don’t Panic!

We have received a number of calls from concerned clients in relation to Brexit and the implications of the UK leaving the EU. Here’s a few points which may be useful and allay some fears. It is worth noting that until the UK leaves the EU, the UK remains a full member of the EU and UK nationals retain their legal status as EU citizens. The Withdrawal Agreement & Implementation Period • If approved, the Withdrawal Agreement will secure the rights of UK nationals living in the EU. It will allow UK nationals to stay in the EU country where they are living after the UK leaves the EU on 29 March 2019. • The Withdrawal Agreement sets out an Implementation Period running from 30 March 2019 and ending on 31 December 2020. • If you are a UK national lawfully residing in another EU country on 31 December 2020, you will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement. Living in the EU after 29 March 2019 • During the Implementation Period, free movement rights will continue to apply to UK nationals. If you are legally resident in the EU by the end of this period, you will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, and will be able to continue living in your EU country of residence, enjoying broadly the same rights to healthcare, benefits and pensions as at present. Working in the EU after 29 March 2019 • During the Implementation Period UK nationals will have same rights to work in an EU Member State as at present. • UK nationals legally resident in the EU by the end of the Implementation Period will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement and will be able to continue living and working in their EU country of residence as at present. Receiving an uprated UK state pension in the EU after 29 March 2019 • During the Implementation Period EU rules and regulations will apply. • As UK nationals living in an EU country by the end of the Implementation Period, if you remain in the scope of the Agreement, you will: o maintain the right to export an uprated UK state pension o receive associated reciprocal healthcare cover in the EU o The UK State Pension is payable worldwide under domestic legislation. Access to healthcare in the EU after 29 March 2019 • During the Implementation Period the current framework of EU rules and regulations will apply. • As long as you remain in scope of the Withdrawal Agreement, your equal treatment rights to healthcare in your Member State of residence will be protected after the end of the implementation period (on the same basis as a comparable national of your EU country of residence). Double taxation • The UK leaving the EU will not change existing double taxation arrangements. • The UK has a double taxation agreement with all EU countries, which will continue to apply after the UK leaves the EU. The information above is based on information currently available from the UK Government, and is subject to change depending on the UK Government’s negotiations with the EU, and the UK Parliament accepting the Withdrawal Agreement. Bugs now attacking Arona

Continued from Front

Hundreds of homes across Tacoronte are already infested, and the plague is now spreading to the neighbouring town of La Laguna. There has even been talk of the termite’s appearance at an Arona commercial centre, probably transported via a delivery. The money, to be spent over the next four years to rid the island of these pests, will be used by Gestión del Medio Rural (GMR), a public, bug-busting company, acknowledged by the Ministry of Regional Agriculture. It has already proved its

worth, having fought the plague of red palm weevil, which originated in tropical Asia. It was first recorded in Spain in 1994, and has since spread to Africa and Europe. The plan of action, to avoid further delay in banishing the termites from Tenerife, is to get the agreements signed by the Canary Island Government, as well as the Tenerife Cabildo. This plan is necessary, because the laws prevent private contracting for an emergency elimination of these termites. But the problem is a huge concern, and, for this reason, specialised companies have to be brought in. Neighbours from Tacoronte, who are in a good, financial

position, have already tried to get shot of these termites by contracting other companies, but to no avail. And because of the lengthy process in obtaining public funding, precious time is lost, and the problem is getting worse! The Tenerife plague is close to the point of no return, because it has been noted that this type of termite, once settled, is here to stay. There is no record of them being completely eradicated, once they have set up residency, which is why the millions of euros planned to be spent eliminating the bugs is acceptable. But even if the problem is controlled, annual inspections will have to be

When the officers took a closer look after retrieving the package, they discovered that it contained 27kg of hashish in slabs. Another call was received a few hours later, informing them that two young boys had seen a package, floating some 400m off the

coast in Candelaria’s Playa Punta. When the officers arrived, they confirmed that it was a second package containing hashish slabs, weighing in at 30kg. The Guardia’s helicopter crew spotted the third package on a Guimar

carried out. In America, from where the termites originate, annual checks are carried out, with up to two million dollars forked out each year, just to keep the bugs under control. Termites have proved to be a terrible enemy, and full eradication has become an impossible task. Milagros Fernández de Lezeta, from the National Association of Environmental Health, said: “The Reticulitermes flavipes, known as the subterranean eastern or the eastern termite, is one of the most harmful bugs on the planet, and the population is increasing rapidly across Tenerife. “In less than 18 months, the infestation has become a

Officers go fishing, to hook bales of hashish SOME 87 kilograms of hash, stuffed into three bales, were fished out by the Guardia Civil last week off the Tenerife coastlines of Granadilla, Arico and Guimar. Guardia officers, helped by a helicopter crew, found one of the bales inside Granadilla port, near the oil rigs. The second was found on an Arico beach in Poris, and the third on a Guimar beach. Two of them weighed 30kg and the other was 27kg. The officers were, initially, told of “something” floating in the Granadilla water inside the port area, described as a brown bale with writing on the packaging.

beach, which looked suspicious, and it was! Inside were more slabs of hashish, also weighing 30kg. The Guardia have since begun an investigation to see where the bales of hash originated, as well as to ascertain their final destinations.

real nightmare for thousands of people on the island. “These particular termites make no noise, and leave no signs that they are about to take route. But people realise there is a problem, only when there is already enormous, irreparable damage caused by these bugs.” Tenerife biologist David Hernandez is equally clear: “It is a serious issue, and even more so if we take into account that these termites can inhabit almost the entire island,” he stressed. “That’s because they love water, and enjoy temperatures from four degrees upwards. They are a serious threat to the island’s historical heritage and the Laurel forests.” Hernandez added: “These termites are wood destroyers, feeding on structural wood from buildings, as well as wood accessories, books, paper and cotton, and they have even been known to eat carrots and potatoes.” A mature colony can vary, from 20,000 to five million workers, and the main queen of the colony can produce 5,000 to 10,000 eggs per day.

THE Department of Youth in Adeje, under Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, has released details of last year’s events and participation by the younger Adeje generation.

The municipal’s young club has attracted more than 19,000 visits during the 12-month period, with the department organising 569 events during the year. “Adeje’s young people use the centre as their own, as a meeting place, and somewhere they know, in which they can access a range of services of real interest to them”, said Cllr Chinea Linares. He added: “The increase in visits is also down to the diversification of events we are organising.” In fact, there were almost 8,000 more visits in 2018 than in 2017. And of those who dropped into and used the centre last year, over 7,000 were young women, and more than 11,000 young men. The youngsters aged 14-16 were the most-represented group. although a healthy number of over-20s also use the centre for activities. Among the type of events and activities planned and organised by the centre are training and entertainment, as well as courses designed to improve the quality of life. One of the most popular and used facility has

been a mobile service, with youngsters from the department travelling to different parts of the borough, offering information and activities for local youth. Young secondary-school students also find a home in the youth centre, and Adeje Council’s initiative, rewarding them for academic as well

as social prowess, has been welcomed by the borough’s school students. This year, up to 10 students will be travelling to County Cork, in Ireland, to take part in a two-week summer camp, staying with families, with free flights and accommodation. Festival feast for our music lovers THE International Festival and Academy of Music in Tenerife celebrates its 15th Anniversary this year, and one of the regular venues is the Auditorio Aguamarina Golf concert hall, on San Miguel’s Golf del Sur.

The purpose of the Festival is an exchange of knowledge and musical experience between students and professors from Tenerife, and all over the world. The Festival really does sound grand, but it is run on a shoestring budget, backed by lots of sponsorship. It is organised by popular conductor Jung Chul Choi, along with his violinist daughter, Judith, who plays with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Few music lovers here will be aware of the young, exceptional talent on display, from this Sunday (17th Feb) until the following Sunday (24th), starting at 8pm each evening, for just €5 a session, with unreserved seating. There will be a series of competitions, and chamber music concerts, for piano and strings, with young musicians taking part from the UK, Germany, Korea, France, the

US, and Tenerife. Entrance to the Auditorio Aguamarina concert hall, which is little known, even by locals, is next to the Golden Bay Chinese Restaurant. Festival concerts will also be held on 22nd and 23rd February, in the Auditorio Guia de Isora, Calle La Cruz, in Santa Cruz, and, again, entry costs €5 a session. the young people explore other parts of their talents, as well as giving them a space to work on improving their quality of life. The “invention galley” is a favourite among many users of the centre, inviting participants to share their writings, literature and poetry, and get to

know the work of others. In this way they begin to appreciate the writings of Canarian authors, as well as those from the rest of Spain and beyond. “El Puntito”, for the 1215 age group, includes training workshops and talks, designed to help them have fun together, through arts and crafts, excursions, exhibitions, etc, all with the aim of improving harmony and social awareness among the borough’s youngsters. There are also aids to help young people make better use of their free time, while encouraging integration within the community. The youth centre’s multi-use halls are popular, as are the studios for rehearsal and recording. The study areas are well used, as are the virtual zones, the dance space and the outdoor terrace, as much by individuals as by the many groups and associations who are frequent visitors to the centre.

Riddle of a nephew and his aunt’s violent death

POLICE believe that the nephew of a woman, found dead at her home, could have been involved in the tragedy. The aunt’s body, found by officers last Monday at her second-floor home in Santa Cruz, showed signs of being beaten to death in a frenzied attack, and investigators are sure it is another case of domestic abuse. The nephew, who was present when the police arrived, was escorted to hospital by the cops, before being locked up at the local National Police station. Police, alerted by neighbours, had visited the home and found the lifeless body. The area was then swamped with

special forces and forensic officers throughout the day The nephew, a 55-year-old from Venezuela, turned up at the home of his long-lost Spanish aunt, after searching several months for her, and was welcomed. But neighbours were aware of the woman’s poor health, and noticed that her condition had worsened rapidly, since his arrival. The nephew walked with a crutch because of a disability, and they became aware that the pair’s relationship had become strained over time. Officers investigating how the tragedy happened, have decreed secrecy throughout the proceedings.

Masked gunman arrested after robbing local bank

A MASKED man, who pulled off an armed robbery at Taraconte’s Cajasiete bank last Monday, grabbed around 5,000 euros, before escaping with a lot less than he’d expected.

Lanzarote’s Playa del Charco de los Clicos

MORE than 1,200 travel journalists, editors, bloggers and agencies have each reported his or her favourite beaches in Europe, including a Top 10, to tour operator Flight Network. And though Shipwreck Beach, on the Greek island of Zakynthos, came first, and Iceland’s Reynisfjära Beach second, the remaining Top-

10 beaches were all in Spain. These included three in the Canaries, but not, unfortunately, any in Tenerife. Playa de Papagayo and Playa del Charco de los Clicos swept in for Lanzarote, while Gran Canaria’s Güi Güi also caught the travelling crew’s attention. The remaining Spanish beaches were: Playa de las Catedrales and Playa de Rodas, Cíes Islands (both Galicia); Cala de Ambolo (Jávea, Alicante); Aguas Blancas (Ibiza) and Platja de Formentor (Mallorca).

That wasn’t the end of it, though, because the Guardia Civil discovered his identity, hours later, after talking with some of his friends. The 44-year-old Santa Cruz man finally handed himself over, voluntarily, in the early hours of Wednesday, and was charged with armed robbery. He is in custody in La Laguna, awaiting his appointment before a judge in the local courthouse. The robbery happened around 3pm at the Cajasiete Bank, in the Santa Cruz municipality, and, said Guardia sources, he waited for a few customers to leave, then entered the premises after observing the place for a while. He donned a ski mask, closed

One dead in car crash

A HORRIFIC car accident occurred last Sunday afternoon on the TF-13 in La Laguna, where two cars were involved in a devastating collision, resulting in one person dying and four others injured, in the town of Tejina. Three teams of firemen, from different

brigades, were dispatched to help retrieve the injured parties from their vehicles. Also at the scene were three ambulances and their crew, as well as two pick-up trucks to collect the vehicles, which were both considered to be write-offs. Local Police were also at the scene to assist in traffic flow, as well as creating a safe, clear exit for the emergency team, as huge jams built up because of the seriousness of the crash.

the front door, and waved a gun at the staff, shouting in a muffled voice: “I know you are only workers at the bank, but this is a stick-up!” Witnesses said he then pointed the gun at the cashiers and ordered them to collect money for him. Unfortunately, for him at least, most of the cash had been deposited, directly, in automatic dispensers, and not held at the cash desk. But he still locked four members of the staff in an

office without harming them. The sum he stole is not known, exactly, but it wasn’t huge, and certainly nowhere the sum he probably expected. Bank sources said the amount taken was about 5,000 euros, and not the 20,000 being suggested. The bank has assured clients that their deposits are insured, and that security cameras have recorded the incident, as well as every movement made inside the premises.

NEWS IN BRIEF Why the South’s Big Painful antibiotic figures here

SPAIN is among the countries with the highest levels of antibiotic prescription in the world, according to experts. Newly-released data showed Spain consumed almost three times the number of antibiotics of the Netherlands, at 25.1 doses per 1,000 inhabitants, compared with 10.1 per 1,000. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that unnecessary prescriptions of the medication could lead to antibiotic resistance, while the European Centre for the Prevention and Control of Diseases (ECDC), claimed a total of 33,000 people die annually as a result of infections caused by resistant bacteria. The figure stands at 3,000 in Spain alone.

Huge truffle’s a real diamond

A SPANISH supplier has found one the country’s largest-ever truffles, weighing 750 grams. The luxury food, labelled the “black diamond” of the restaurant sector, will be served up by the Goya Gallery restaurant in Valencia. The truffle, found in the Abejuela area, between Valencia and Castellon province, was handed over to the restaurant’s owner, Fernando Navarro. Truffles normally retail for around €1,200 per kilo, but experts believe this specimen could be worth more because it is rare to find one single truffle weighing so much.

Bridge-jumper hit by car

AN unidentified man, who jumped off a motorway bridge in the La Laguna area of San Lazaro on Sunday evening, was run over by a car on the TF-5. His name and age were not released, but he is in a critical condition in the University Hospital’s intensive care unit. The emergency services were notified at 7.45pm, and were told that the car driver just couldn’t avoid him. An ambulance team stabilised the man, before transferring him to hospital.

Tragic discovery of teacher

THE body of missing 34-year-old teacher Nuria Borras has been found in her car in a Lleida canal, in Catalonia. Police are now investigating whether she had been involved in a road accident, after she disappeared at 4am last Sunday, as she made her way home from a party. Members of the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police), and fire services, joined hundreds of local residents in searching for the woman, who taught at the Manuel de Montsaur Institute. Nuria’s husband, with whom she had two children, reported her missing last Saturday afternoon. Her white Volvo was finally found in the canal, 500 metres from where her mobile phone signal was last traced. Officers are looking into whether the accident might have taken place at another point on the road, and the canal current swept Nuria’s car away.

THE South of Tenerife’s three main municipalities, Granadilla, Adeje and Arona, have experienced a demographic explosion over the last couple of years.

They have registered, in total, 210,000 foreign residents (excluding tourists), which is 3,000 more than the island’s Santa Cruz capital. This foreign population increase is mostly down to the economic rise in the southern region, with tourist figures and employment growing constantly, which is a clear indication of this. And so are the thousands of people, stuck in traffic on a daily basis, while commuting to and from work. In the North of Tenerife, however, the economic status has been stagnant for several years. Arona and Adeje concentrate mainly on the hostelry and tourism sector, while Granadilla manages

industrial activities, with the new port and industrial parks. It means that, for the first time, the three municipalities have more inhabitants than Santa Cruz, excluding tourists. The last census, updated in March 2018, saw 207,095 registered inhabitants in Tenerife’s capital, whereas in Arona, Granadilla and Adeje, some 210,426 were registered between the three: Arona with 99,283 inhabitants, Granadilla 58,738 and Adeje 52,405. A comparison of the data, with figures from 20 years ago,

shows that the three southern municipalities have nearly quadrupled their residency, as opposed to Santa Cruz, whose population figures have dropped by some 5,000 residents. The population growth has had a lot to do with immigration, because 125 different nationalities reside in the three southern municipalities. But most mayors from these areas maintain that public infrastructures, especially the road systems, are not sufficient for the number of inhabitants in the South.

Felipe’s surprise birthday flop! visit to the troops in Iraq Fake Romanians

THREE Iranians were detained by National Police at Tenerife South’s airport last Monday, after attempting to travel to London on false passports.

KING Felipe surprised the Spanish troops in Iraq last Wednesday with a visit, on his 51st birthday, accompanied by Defence Minister Margarita Robles. The monarch had planned to spend just 10 hours in the country, including a meeting in the Presidential Palace in Baghdad with Iraqi leader Barham Salim. As a trained soldier and, automatically, the highestranking member of Spain’s military because of his royal position as King, HRH Felipe VI, reportedly, wanted to spend his birthday with the troops because it was also the 30th anniversary of the country’s first NATO mission. They are led by the US, whose commander, Lieutenant Paul J Lacamera, also met the King. Iraq is Spain’s secondlargest foreign mission after Lebanon. Felipe VI met with 326 of the troops at their Besmayah base, some 45km south-east of

Baghdad, where he shared lunch and coffee with the contingent. His visit, the second as Head of State, having been to Iraq once before in 2015, was unannounced until his arrival in an Armed Forces aircraft, for security reasons.

The dramatic decline of illegal crossings into Italy, which fell by 80% in 2018 compared with 2017, came after a controversial deal that saw Italy training and financing the Libyan coastguard to stop migrants crossing the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has enabled the country to welcome migrant boats and charity ships, denied access by other European countries. On Tuesday, the Spanish Maritime Rescue were said to have saved 278 people from three boats across the Alboran Sea.

Spain’s boat migrants can’t stop appearing A total of 4,104 people arrived in 98 boats last month, up from 1,396 arrivals in January last year. Chancer’s cashpoint scandal

A HEARTLESS, 54-yearold man was detained by National Police after stealing 600 euros from an elderly person, who forgot to take the money from a cashpoint in Las Palmas. The pensioner, aged 92, realised what had happened and informed the police. They were able to check the CCTV, as well as the security cameras on the ATM machine. Officers witnessed another man using the machine, moments after the elderly man had made his withdrawal, and helped himself! The chancer, who was identified, detained and charged by the officers for misappropriation, is awaiting his time before a judge.

Woman’s attack ordeal

A WOMAN aged 39, the victim of an attempted robbery, was violently attacked with a weapon last Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened in La Laguna’s city centre, just before 5pm, at Calle Herradores, and a call was made to the emergency services, requesting an ambulance. It arrived promptly, and medics made her as comfortable as possible before transferring her to the University hospital. Fortunately, there were no broken ribs, but she suffered severe bruising, and is recovering from the ordeal.

CLC World foundation gifts for a seniors’ home

Trio on the run, but have you seen them?

BRITAIN’S National Crime Agency (NCA) has released its list of the most-wanted UK criminals on the run, who may have fled to Tenerife, or mainland Spain.

Among them are an alleged murderer, a convicted drugtrafficker and a big-time VAT fraudster, all of whom may be living here. If you have spotted any of the following people, or know of their whereabouts, call the NCA immediately, on 0370 496 7622.

THE CLC World Foundation, an organisation for those in need, recently saw the arrival of its new furniture delivery to Adeje’s home for seniors.

The centre has 38 users, with18 permanent residents and 20 who use the installation as a day-centre. The cost of the donation was around €3,350. Thanks to the Foundation, the centre now has five new reclining chairs, two wheelchairs, four new mattresses, designed specifically to avoid bedsores, along with two chairs for the bath/shower, all of which are being used daily by the centre residents.

For Adeje’s Social Welfare and Diversity Councillors, and Seniors, Isabel Fernández Gonzáles and Cristina Fuente Carballo, respectively, “this initiative is a welcome demonstration of the willingness of our society to help those of advanced years. “We are caring for 38 people in the centre, with activities that help enforce cognitive capacity, while also creating a welcome, open and warm atmosphere, in which our residents know their needs will be attended to, with, of course, all the necessary hygienic and sanitary guarantees.” Foundation representatives Víctor García Díaz and Miriam Palazón, said: “Our objective is to offer the maximum amount of assistance we can,

Christopher More He is wanted in connection with a man’s murder in Cheshire in June 2003. More is accused of travelling to a remote Cheshire farmhouse with a number of accomplices, where, after their demands for money were refused, they assaulted the five people occupants, beating one so badly that he died at the scene. More is also accused of attempting to murder a second man, and also for false imprisonment and assault of several other people, all involved in a separate incident. In 2003, More is believed to have flown from the UK to Spain, where he has many links. He also has ties to Malta, but his current location is not known. He is described as being just over 6ft tall, of slim build, and is known to use a number of aliases, including: Christopher Guest, Chris Guest, Christopher Moores and Christopher Moore.

Sarah Panitzke She is wanted by the UK’s HMRC for conspiracy to acquire criminal property, after laundering more than €1bn. She was a high-ranking member of a criminal gang, involved in VAT fraud, and she also controlled the company accounts of several organisations, via different IP addresses. Panitzke travelled extensively to further the fraud, as far away as Dubai, and also to Spain and Andorra. Panitzke, who absconded in May 2013 before her trial ended, received an eight-year sentence in August 2013, in absentia. A further 18 members of the crime group were jailed for a total of 135 years. She is 5ft 7in tall, slim build, with mousey straight hair, blue eyes, and a Yorkshire accent.

John Barton He may be in Fuengirola, after dodging a 20-year sentence for drug-trafficking by absconding. Barton was jailed in 2003 for conspiring to import large volumes of heroin into the UK between 1999 and 2000. He was convicted in absentia and has been linked to the Fuengirola and Costa del Sol areas. Barton is described as being about 5ft 9in tall, of medium build.

Mobile roaming charges could make comeback if there’s a no-deal Brexit

BRITONS travelling in Europe could face a return to mobile roaming charges in the event of a no-deal Brexit, according to Government documents. Mobile phone firms have been banned from charging extra fees to customers travelling within the EU, since 2017. However, a draft “statutory instrument”, tabled as part of a raft of no-deal preparations, means that, from 29th March, mobile users may be liable for surcharges when they travel on the continent. In a note accompanying the secondary legislation, the Mobile Roaming (EU Exit) Regulations 2019, the Government admits consumer groups lobbied hard for a new scheme to maintain current arrangements. But “after careful consideration, the Govern-ment decided not to adopt this proposal”, it says. The new draft regulation says that in the event of “no exit” agreement with the EU, “it will not be possible to impose a limit on the wholesale charges faced by UK operators, when their customers use networks owned by EU operators”. The explanatory note reads: “Mobile operators noted that a cap on the charges that EU operators can apply to UK operators (as currently regulated by the EU), any increases in costs would likely be passed on to

customers.” Additionally, operators also raised concerns that a limit on these costs, which could be passed on to customers, would affect the sustainability of certain roaming services. This means that roaming services could be removed altogether from some customers. A spokesman for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, said: “In the event that we leave the EU without a deal, the continuation of surcharge-free mobile roaming for UK citizens travelling in the EU would be a commercial decision for the operators.” MoneySavingExpert has found that just two out of 12 major UK mobile phone providers, Three and Smarty, which is owned by Three,

have committed to keeping roaming in the EU “free” after Brexit. Ten companies, estimated to have at least 85% of UK mobile-users, say they have “no plans” to change their roaming policies, but they have not ruled out the return of charges. The scrapping of EU dataroaming charges in summer 2017 was considered a longawaited, significant benefit by many British travellers. If Theresa May’s Brexit deal is adopted, a transition period of 21 months, to December 2020, would maintain surcharge-free, mobile-data roaming. Even under the deal, it is unclear whether charges could be avoided. The Prime Minister said last year: “The UK will not be part of the EU’s Digital Single Market,

which will continue to develop after our withdrawal from the EU.” Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of home services at the consumer group, said: “Two-thirds of people think free roaming is important when travelling in Europe, so any return to sky-high charges for using mobile phones abroad would be a bitter blow for millions of consumers. “The Government should seek to avoid these charges by securing an EU deal. But if that is not the outcome, companies must be absolutely clear about any extra charges their customers could be facing.” Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright, replying to an urgent question in the Commons, said many mobile operators claim to have “no current

plans” to change their approach to mobile roaming after Brexit. He told MPs: “Surcharge-free roaming for UK customers may continue across the EU as now, based on operators’ commercial arrangements. “Leaving without a deal would not prevent UK mobile operators from making and honouring commercial arrangements with those in the EU and beyond, to deliver the services their customers expect, including roaming arrangements.” Wright earlier said that the Government intended to ensure the requirements on mobile operators to apply a financial limit on data usage, while abroad, is retained in UK law, and would be set at £45 for each monthly billing period, which is now the existing limit.

Adeje makes its mark on World Cancer Day THE Health Protection Department at Adeje Council is well aware that for those who have cancer, or are caring for someone with cancer, every day is important.

That is why this department works all year around, offering co-operation with an “integrated oncology needs” programme, run by the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC). Through the service, the Council can offer Adeje residents a multitude of free services, psychological consultations, physiotherapy, transport and waterbased therapies to prevent Lymphedema, etc. Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo said: “We are actively working to help and support those people affected by cancer. “Our oncology service is

used by many people, who can count upon discretion and care, because we know this is a vulnerable time for them, and our job is also to help improve their quality of life.” Last Monday was World Cancer Day, and a banner was hung outside the main Town Hall, with various ribbons signifying different forms of cancer. And for the next three days, the Plaza de España was lit up in green to mark the ongoing fight against cancers of all kinds. All the services on offer, through Adeje’s Health Protection Department and the AECC, are free and accessed through the department offices in Calle Tinerfe el Grande 32 (beside the main post office). And be assured that all requests for information and assistance will be handled with discretion, and in confidence.

assessed the erratic driver before taking him to a Maspalomas health centre, where he was treated for minor injuries. While the officers were putting together the facts, they noticed that the individual had thrown wraps of synthetic drugs out of the car window, as he sped away from the control point. The Guardia believe it was a reason for him losing control of the car, and causing the fatal accident. The driver is now in custody,

charged with reckless driving, resisting the authorities and manslaughter. Remarkably, he had already served a 14-year prison sentence, from 1999, for the same crime of manslaughter. The accident resulted in the death of a popular Gran Canaria musician, 55-yearold Miguel Esupiñan, which has had a huge impact on the island’s culture circle. Miguel had been involved in such bands as Altane, Doctor Burrus and Lua Lua band.

Killer driver ditched drugs in police chase A DRIVER who crashed head-on into another car on Tuesday, in Gran Canaria, causing the death of the other motorist instantly, was found to be transporting four kilos of synthetic drugs.

Young man’s death plunge A MAN jumped to his death from a fourthfloor balcony of an apartment block yesterday, in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz, near the central bus station.

The emergency services arrived at the scene almost immediately, but could only confirm the

25-year-old man’s death. Witnesses reported how they saw him plummet to the ground, his injuries being so severe that he died on impact. The tragic incident happened on Wednesday afternoon, just before 4pm, and had all the classic signs of a suicide. Police are now investigating why a man so young could feel the need to end his life so dramatically.

Initially, the drug-driver was trying to avoid a police control, probably because of the contents he was carrying. He sped off to avoid the Guardia Civil traffic officers, nearly hitting the one who flagged him, in the process. Officers began following the individual from a distance, witnessing his erratic driving, which caused the fatal accident. The victim, a 44-year-old man, was driving on the Pasito Blanco road (GC 500), in the south of the island, when, suddenly, a vehicle smashed into him head-on. The driver who caused the accident managed to climb out of his car before trying to escape. But the officers caught up with him, and he was detained immediately. The crew of an ambulance, which attended the scene,

Guardia’s dodgy-coin alert THE Guardia Civil’s official Twitter account posted an alert yesterday (Thursday), making the public aware that false two-euro coins are in circulation. The Guardia’s intention is also to prevent people being conned. That’s because the two-euro coin is, in fact, extremely similar

to the South African Rand, which is worth just 32 cents. People who follow the Guardia’s official Twitter account have confirmed that, since looking at the post, they have come across a few South African coins in their possession. To their dismay, they didn’t even notice!

Thieving trio even took family’s car!

TWO women, aged 37 and 39, along with a 41-year-old man, have been detained by the National Police, and charged with breaking and entering a La Laguna home in Punto del Hidalgo. They are said to have stolen objects worth some €22,000, comprising televisions, music systems, as well as several domestic appliances, and even the family car! The burglary was reported to the police, who suspected immediately that the housekeeper, who had access with her own set of keys, was also aware of the homeowners’ comings and goings. The police also discovered that she took advantage of her position, planning the burglary with the help of two other people. Her aim was to enter the property while the houseowner was away. The cops soon identified all three suspects, and found that they had police records for similar crimes. The trio were all arrested at an establishment in La Laguna. The officers were able to recover some of the stolen items, including the vehicle, which were returned to the victim. The arrested three, along with the corresponding paperwork, have been presented to the courts, and the trio are awaiting a hearing.

Young thugs battered man with top mobile

NATIONAL police, based in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, have arrested two 16-yearold minors, accused of carried out a violent robbery. A man was badly beaten by two youths at a nightclub

in the Port area of Las Palmas, and their obvious intention was to steal his personal belongings, including his top-of-therange mobile phone. An initial report was made by the victim, who told police that two youngsters had punched him in the face several times, before

taking his phone and other personal items. After his detailed description of the young thugs, as well as statements from witnesses inside the nightclub, both minors were arrested at nearby Santa Catalina Park. Once detained, the police performed a body search

on both boys, and found the mobile phone, a watch and a silver chain, as well as the victim’s wallet. The two minors were handed over by police, with a corresponding report to the juvenile courts in Las Palmas, to where both youngsters are awaiting an appearance.

ONE of the most violent criminal gangs has been “completely disbanded” in Spain, following a joint international operation between the Guardia Civil and the Italian Arma de Carabinieri. A total of 14 arrests, between the Campo de Gibraltar and Malaga, led to 13 prison sentences for members of the Marranella clan, themselves a branch of the notorious Italian Camorra crime syndicate, according to a police statement. Meanwhile, seven other men, including some Brits, are still under investigation for their links to the gang. El Pais newspaper reported that among those incarcerated was clan leader Era Giuseppe, who co-ordinated the trafficking of tonnes of hashish, via a motorhome, to Rome. A delighted Guardia Civil spokesperson said in a statement: “With operation Maverick II, we have disbanded one of the most important and violent criminal organisations, dedicated to the international drug trade, and based out of the Costa del Sol.” The Marranella clan were known to collaborate with British criminals in the Campo de Gibraltar, securing hashish

from Morocco. But the Italian mafiosos also robbed and stole drugs from other criminal organisations in violent heists, known as “vuelcos”.

In March last year, the Marranella clan held two Italian citizens at gunpoint in broad daylight in a busy Manilva street, before

kidnapping and torturing them for 24 hours, forcing them to give up the locations of hidden stashes of hashish. Once drugs were seized, the clan would then contract a man and woman to pose as holiday-makers while sneaking the psychoactive resin, by motorhome and luxury car, back to the back alleys of Rome. Last October, the clan attempted to kidnap the leader of Spanish drugdealing network by beating him to a pulp, and forcing him into a car for further interrogation. But after a brief shoot-out between both criminal organisations, the kidnapping was unsuccessful. The crime family, known in Italy as the Banda della Marranella, suffered a blow in the same October

month when the Carabinieri de Ostia, in a preliminary operation called Maverick, arrested 42 people and seized goods worth two million euros across various cities in Italy, according to El Pais. The missing piece of the international puzzle remained a Spanish cell, securing and pushing the drugs to Italy…until now! During the length of operation Maverick II, half-atonne of hashish was seized from six luxury cars and a motorhome, by police forces in Spain, France and Italy. The clan’s subterranean cellar was found in Cadiz, with room for a tonne of hashish (Picture: Guardia Civil) Police also located a hidden trapdoor in a Cadiz farm in el Zabal de la Linea de la Concepcion, where a “perfectly-panelled” subterranean room was used to stash up to a tonne of hashish for export to Italy. The Camorra crime syndicate is one of the oldest criminal organisations in Italy, dating back to the 17th century. Family clans within the syndicate take care of their own business and territory. The Marranella clan was run with Giuseppe and his two sons, one of whom was arrested during the operation, while an international order has been issued for the arrest of the other son, presumed to be in Italy.

Rapist prevented from being kids’ entertainer

A BRIT teenager, jailed for raping a young girl, had been planning to work as a children’s entertainer in Mallorca.

Durham Crown Court heard that 19-year-old James Milburn worked on the island for a while, and, on his return to England, said he would return there to work as a kids’ holiday rep But the mother of his victim, who found out, reported the rape to the police. Shaun Dodds, prosecuting, said Milburn had flown from Leeds Bradford Airport to Palma, after discovering he was being investigated,

Family members urged him to return, however, and he was arrested by officers at the airport. Milburn, apparently, made no comment when questioned by police. But after the case was sent to the Crown Court, he admitted a charge of rape. Liam O’Brien, defending, told the court there was nothing he could say to “diminish the pain and suffering of the victim in this case, and that of her family”. He said Milburn “was old enough to know right from wrong”. Judge Jonathan Carroll imposed a custodial sentence of six years and nine months, subjecting Milburn to register as a sexoffender for life.

Sanchez and May in Venezuela harmony

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and UK counterpart Theresa May, have both recognised Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s interim President.

They were joined by France and Germany, in supporting the South American country’s new leader. In a TV statement, Sanchez said: “I recognise the President of Venezuela’s assembly, Mr Juan Guaido, as President in charge of Venezuela.” Jeremy Hunt, UK Foreign

Secretary, added: “Let’s hope this takes us closer to ending a humanitarian crisis.” Guaido’s move followed the failure of under-fire Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, to meet an eightday deadline to call fresh general elections. Guaido declared himself new Venzuela President, amid a political crisis which persuaded three million people to flee the country. Under Maduro’s leadership, the country has seen inflation reach 1,300,000%, with millions unable to buy daily essentials, such as bread and vegetables.

Spain is still favoured by record-breaking tourists

NEW figures reveal that 82.8 million foreign tourists visited Spain in 2018, which means a 1.1% increase on the previous year. It was also the country’s sixth, consecutive, recordbreaking year for visitors, and even renewed competition from the likes of Turkey, Tunisia and Greece could not stop them flooding in. Their huge numbers

also spent €89.9bn in Spain, which was a 3.3% improvement on the year before, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The figures are a positive sign for the industry, showing that visitor numbers are expanding carefully, with little risk of over-saturation. Meanwhile, the sums of money spent by visitors are increasing healthily, with the average daily spend by individuals growing 7.4% to €146. True, the volume of British

tourists declined by 1.6% in 2018, but they were still the biggest foreign group, with 18.5 million flying over to Spain. Germany’s figures dropped by 4.1% to 11.4m, and the number of Scandinavian holiday-makers also dropped by 0.7% to 5.7m. But Spain was able to pick up the slack, thanks to a spike in other markets. Visitors from the US grew by 11.8%, to just under three million, while Russian tourist numbers jumped by 6.3% to 1.2m.

Town-centre speeds may drop to 20km/h MOTORISTS in Spain’s built-up areas may have to be in first gear permanently if the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) plan goes ahead, to cut the limit to just 20km per hour (12.5mph).

The road transport management authority has often recommended that town-centre speeds should drop to 20km/h. And this seems likely to be enshrined in legislation: a draft Royal Decree, or Bill of Law, to make it the maximum speed for drivers on roads where the pavement is on the same level, and there is no kerb. This idea becoming more popular in many urban areas, when roads are

redeveloped. Speed limits in town centres are likely to drop to 30km/h on singlecarriageways and to 50km/h for dual carriageways in these areas. And penalties for breaking the limit would become much stiffer: the current maximum is €300 in fines and the reduction of two licence points, although “minor” cases of speeding, typically, attract fines of €100, reducing to €50 if paid immediately.

Now, though, the maximum for speeding would rise to €500, with the reduction of six licence points. Thus, two maximum speeding charges would mean the loss of a driver’s licence. The DGT recalls that, in 2017, the most recent period for statistics, 509 people were killed in car accidents in town centres, mostly pedestrians, of whom 80% were considered “vulnerable”, such as the elderly or disabled.

Gibraltar ‘colony’ insult by Spanish angers UK chiefs GIBRALTAR, having been described as a “colony”’ in a European Union text on visas, at Spain’s instigation, reportedly, has infuriated the UK and the Rock’s Chief Minister Fabián Picardo. “I don’t know what Spain’s playing at,” said Picardo. “Our neighbouring giant makes the most of every chance it has to stick its finger in our eye.” The Minister, who seldom minces his words, accused Spain of “abuse” and “bullying” and added: “Nobody would be surprised about the Spanish Government’s latest provocative statement.” British PM Theresa May, although up to her eyes in Brexit matters, said it was “completely unacceptable”, and that Gibraltar was “a full part of the English family, and that would not change after Brexit”. Sir Tim Barrow, the EU’s British Ambassador, said it was

POLICE have arrested a 79-yearold pensioner, who, for months, has vandalised and terrorised the O Calvario neighbourhood, in Vigo, northern Spain. The vandal, an aggressive senior citizen, is alleged to have scratched more than 100 parked vehicles in January, also causing damage to a number

“inappropriate” to describe Gibraltar as a “colony” because it was a “full part of the UK family” in the same way as England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands are. He added: “It has a modern, constitutional relationship with Great Britain.” Sir Tim called for “all parties to respect the people of Gibraltar’s democratic wish to remain British”. The controversial description formed a footnote of a lengthy document on the right of Brits to travel throughout Europe after Brexit.

It reads: “Gibraltar is a colony of the British Crown. There is controversy between Spain and the UK concerning the sovereignty of Gibraltar, a territory for which a solution should be found in the light of resolutions and decisions relevant to the United Nations.” Gibraltar is included in a list of British overseas territories, along with the Falkland Islands, still referred to by Spain and Argentina as Las Islas Malvinas, the Cayman Islands, and Anguila. Diplomatic sources say Gibraltar appears in the United Nations’ list of “nonautonomous territories

pending decolonisation”, which means that its description in the EU paper on visa-free travel is “nothing new”. The UN has actually recommended that Spain and the UK resolve the Rock dispute “via bilateral negotiations”. Visa-free travel for British nationals is described in the EU document, and includes citizens of Gibraltar in the same way as for those of other UK regions. Restrictions will apply after Brexit, whether or not the UK leaves with a deal in hand. And British nationals will be allowed to travel

within the passport-free Schengen zone without a visa for up to 90 days at a time, during any 180-day period. Effectively, after the maximum three-month stay in another EU country, a British national would have to return to the UK and wait another three months before travelling to that country again. This does not apply to EU countries, in which the traveller in question is already resident. For example, a British national already residing in Spain will be allowed to remain in the country indefinitely. But he/ she would be affected by the 90-day rule if travelling to another Member State. These restrictions will apply from midnight on the morning of 30th March, should the UK crash out of the EU without a deal. But if a deal is struck, the restrictions will be activated from New Year’s Day 2021, after the agreed transition period. But this will not apply, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Vandal, 79, terrorised entire neighbourhood of buildings and car locks. The man was arrested last Sunday when one of his victims caught him in the act of scratching his car with a set of keys. An emergency call alerted police about two men fighting on Urzáiz Street. When officers arrived,

they found a man detaining a pensioner, who was obviously trying to escape. The owner of the damaged vehicle, who was bleeding from the nose, told officers he had surprised the vandal in the act of scratching his car and sticking a toothpick in its lock, so that the door couldn’t be opened. When the car-owner tried to stop him, the vandal became aggressive and punched him in the face, breaking the man’s glasses. Shortly after, another resident called police officers to tell them that the old man fighting on the street resembled the one who had damaged the lock on his building’s gate. The police discovered that in addition to the car the vandal was

caught damaging, six other vehicles had been keyed and a number of locks had toothpicks stuck in them. When officers accessed his criminal record, they discovered that the vandal was 79, had damaged more than 120 cars, had assaulted three neighbours and been reported 12 times for assault and vandalism, all since 1st

January! According to the Citizen Security Brigade of the Vigo Police Station, the old man has “terrorised the neighbourhood”, not only because of the damage he inflicted on cars, but also because he usually attacked people with one of two weapons: a cane or an umbrella. In addition, the vandal was hospitalised in a

mental health centre last year, after one of his attacks on a neighbour. But he was not diagnosed with a psychological disorder. According to Galicia daily La Voz, he was discharged after three days when doctors told him he didn’t need treatment, and that he was “mentally sane and his speech coherent”.

An art detective discovered the Visigoth sculptures, covered in mould and leaves, at the back of the British lord’s estate. Dutch historian Arthur Brand found them on the unnamed aristocrat’s land, having spent eight years tracing them around Europe. The limestone sculptures, engraved with Catholic saints, were stolen from a mediaeval church in Burgos in 2004. “The thieves wanted to sell them and make a lot of money, but soon found

such heritage was extremely difficult to sell,” said Brand. “So, they decided to sell them as garden ornaments.” According to the media, the 50kg pieces were bought a few years ago by the aristocrat, who said he was “entirely unaware” of their background. It is believed that he spent just €58,000 apiece for the “priceless” works, which are worth millions. Brand added: “It is incredible that these priceless, 1,300year-old artefacts, made for the Spanish sun, were in his garden, exposed to the English rain.” The artefacts, which were taken to the Spanish Embassy in London on 21st January, will be returned to the Santa Maria de Lara church, in Burgos, later this year.

Pension options in Spain

By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

PENSIONS are often the key to long-term financial security, so take extreme care when deciding what to do here.

Expats have the added complication of factoring in the tax rules of two countries, as well as Brexit’s potential to limit the range of opportunities. So what are today’s options for Britons living in Spain? “Defined contribution” or “money purchase” pensions Since the pension freedoms of 2015, members of defined contribution schemes can usually do the following from age 55: *Take the whole fund as cash, and 25% will be taxfree in the UK *Make cash withdrawals when you want, and 25% is free of UK tax each time *Take regular income through “flexible drawdown”, leaving the remainder invested *Take a secure, regular income for life, through an “annuity” Expatriates have the option to transfer UK pension funds to an EU-based Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), tax-free. The advantages of QROPS include the flexibility to pass pension benefits to chosen heirs, and take income in euros or sterling. Once in a QROPS, funds are protected from future UK taxation, including lifetimeallowance penalties.

However, QROPS benefits and rules vary significantly, between providers and jurisdictions. There is also a 25% UK tax charge on transfers to QROPS, outside the EEA (European Economic Area). Many believe the UK Government may start taxing EU/EEA transfers after Brexit, so, if you are considering transferring, act sooner, rather than later, to avoid unnecessary taxation. First, take specialist advice to establish whether transferring is suitable for you. A defined benefit or finalsalary pension? Here, your employer guarantees a proportion of your salary for the whole of retirement. While you cannot usually withdraw cash from this type of pension, you can transfer it to a defined contribution scheme or QROPS. Traditionally, this has been considered less beneficial

than drawing a guaranteed pension for life. However, some providers have been offering higherthan-usual “transfer values”, sometimes representing hundreds of thousands of pounds. A high, one-off sum, sensibly reinvested, could, potentially, provide a retirement income which exceeds the original annual payment. But it is crucial to fully understand the consequences before giving up lifetime benefits. Taxation While 25% of cash withdrawals can be taken tax-free in the UK, they are usually taxable in your country of residency, if you are non-UK resident. Spanish residents, accessing UK pensions or QROPS income, will attract Spanish general income tax. Rates vary regionally, but generally start at 9.5%, and reach up to 48%.

The exception here is UK Government service pensions, including teachers’, local authority, army, police and civil-service pensions, which remain taxable in the UK only. Making your pensions last If you do choose to take some, or all, of your benefits as cash, ensure you have a reliable plan to fund your long-term future, that matches your personal circumstances and goals. Avoid pension scams by making sure any company you are dealing with, regarding pension services, is regulated with the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Remember, unprotected investments risk losing your money, with no compensation if things go wrong. Even among regulated providers, do check for quality. Your adviser should take account of your

Partial suppression of the new Letting Law

By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

IN my most recent column, late last month, I referred to the New Letting Contract Law, as well as the main changes applied since 19th December 2018.

These included, especially, the urgent measures in housing and rental, which would have beneficial. But on 22nd January, there was an unusual turnabout: the repeal of the Royal Decree-Law 21/2018, of 14th December, which featured these changes the Spanish Government wanted to promote. The derogation (partial suppression of a law) was produced by the Congress of the Deputies, where it should be ratified. But with the Royal DecreeLaw was knocked down,

again modifying the Letting Contract Law 29/1994 and changing, among other things, the minimum duration of the leases, of three to five years. We return to the situation, immediately prior to the publication of the Royal Decree-Law, and, therefore, we must turn back to the application of Law 4/2013, of 4th June, regarding measures to make the rental market more flexible and promote housing. This was in force until the publication of the royal decree-law on 18th

December. But it does mean that the contracts signed between 19th December 2018 and 22nd January 2019, might comply with the provisions of that Royal Decree-Law 21/2018. Apart from the insecurity this situation produces, in which a Government tries to legislate, at the stroke of a Royal DecreeLaw, it should be certain that it has the necessary support to ratify the Royal Decree-Law in the Chamber of Deputies, with its consequent instability and uncertainty.

needs, objectives, personal circumstances and risk appetite, to find the best solution for you and your family. Getting it wrong could have serious and unexpected consequences. Take care to explore your options now, before Brexit, potentially, changes the landscape, to establish your best approach for a prosperous retirement in Spain. Tax rates, scope and reliefs could change. Any statements concerning taxation are based on our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised, and individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues which may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com But, according to experts, the Royal Decree would have caused a big confusion. Examples of this confusion are found, for example, in the case of the distinction between a natural or legal person, in tourist apartments, among others. Others examples include the modification of the law of Civil Procedure, in evictions through non-payment, or by legal or contractual expiration of the term. A modification of the Law would probably be needed, but, in this case, with the consensus of all the political parties. * Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. David Bowie: Finding Fame TV Choice

19 CW

Eurovision: You Decide

Friday 8th February, BBC2, 19.30

Presented by Mel Giedroyc and Måns Zelmerlöw, Eurovision: You Decide will be broadcast live from MediaCity UK in Salford as the show comes to the North West of England for the very first time. As well as a new home, there is a brand new format coming too: from the hundreds of songs that have been submitted, three will be performed on the night by six different artists. The six acts will compete for the honour of representing the United Kingdom at the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv. There’ll also be an exciting live music performance from You Decide host and Eurovision Song Contest 2015 winner Måns Zelmerlöw, as well as lots of surprises on the night. And with BBC Radio 2’s Ken Bruce broadcasting his show live from Salford on the morning of the show, Eurovision: You Decide 2019 will be bigger and better than ever before. The six competing songs and artists will be revealed to the public in January 2019.

Saturday 9th February, BBC2, 21.00 This feature-length documentary tells the untold story of how David Robert Jones became David Bowie, how Bowie became Ziggy Stardust and how Ziggy became immortal - changing the musical landscape as he did so. David Bowie: Finding Fame is the story that finally makes sense of one of the greatest icons of the 20th and 21st centuries. With remarkable, unheard audio recordings, unseen archive and unpublished documents alongside exclusive interviews with David’s family, girlfriends, lifelong friends and early collaborators, this film shows how his experiences in the 1960s created a blueprint for his entire career. Starting in 1966, when he changed his name to Bowie, the film traces his interest in everything from Holst to Bill and Ben, the Flowerpot Men, and Anthony Newley to Tibetan Buddhism. Highlights include a deconstruction - through the eight-track masters - of Bowie classics including Space Oddity, The Man Who Sold The World and the song he wanted to forget, The Laughing Gnome. There are previously unheard demos, never-before-seen footage of his journey through Siberia in 1973 and extraordinary Ziggy footage, believed to be lost forever. Contributors include Bowie’s first cousin and lifelong friend Kristina Amadeus, and his former girlfriend and muse Hermione Farthingale - neither of whom have been filmed talking about him before; the late Lindsay Kemp, in his last filmed interview; former girlfriend Dana Gillespie; lifelong friends Geoff MacCormak and George Underwood; producers Mike Vernon, Tony Visconti and Tony Hatch; and Woody Woodmansey, the last remaining Spider From Mars. This transmission is ahead of the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Directed and produced by Francis Whately, this is the last part of his award-winning and acclaimed David Bowie Trilogy - David Bowie: Five Years, David Bowie: The Last Five Years and now David Bowie: Finding Fame.

Grantchester

Friday 8th February, ITV1, 21.00

Will is settling into the new routines of his life in Grantchester: sermons and services in the church, working the punch bag at the gym, and suffering sniping comments from Leonard in the vicarage. But then an unexpected phone call summons Will back home, and he asks Geordie for his help: Will’s father has got himself into some trouble. It’s a chance for Geordie to discover where Will really comes from, and it’s not what he expected, taking him into a very unfamiliar – and unfriendly – world. Will hasn’t been home in a while, running from a past he wants to forget. But you can’t outrun it forever, and when one vicious beating leads to a grisly murder at a sprawling ancestral home, scandal threatens to engulf the Davenport Family, and life will never be the same for Will again.

Front Row Late

Friday 8th February, BBC2, 23.05

In this special edition of the topical culture programme Front Row Late, Mary Beard talks to the Carnegie Prize-winning and globally bestselling author of the His Dark Materials trilogy of fantasy novels, Philip Pullman. In a wide-ranging conversation, Pullman discusses his love of language, rhythm and myth; his fears for the loss of civic decency in Britain; and, as a former teacher, his opinions on the contemporary education system (from his distrust of the National Curriculum to his enthusiasm for Media Studies). And ahead of a BBC One adaptation of His Dark Materials, staring James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda, he talks about relinquishing his work to screenwriters of adaptations. Mary Beard, presenter of Front Row Late, says: “It was absolutely fascinating to talk to Philip Pullman about the craft of writing. From the 1,000 word-aday routine to the art of the well-chosen adjective and how to tell a story, you have to choose where to put the camera, metaphorically. “We discussed his Dark Materials novels and his work to date and the responsibility of the author to their readers and to language. And that of course led to an interesting debate about the misuse of language in modern politics. He also made a wonderful defence of Media Studies: what would all those ancient rhetoricians like Cicero be studying if they were around today? Media Studies of course.”

Best House In Town

Monday 11th February, BBC1, 15.50

Who hasn’t wanted to have a peak at what’s going on behind closed doors? In this brand new series, proud homeowners who go the extra mile to make their houses stand out from the crowd will compete for the accolade of The Best House In Town. First up is the historic city of York. The homeowners of three much-loved detached properties in the area have handed their keys over to five nosy neighbours... They’ll judge the perspective champions on three key criteria: the functionality of the home, the ambition of its interior design and finally, the ‘X factor’. First up is a lovely Victorian railway cottage which, after a nine-year renovation project, is packed with ambition, style and train memorabilia. Next on the agenda is a 1960s farmhouse, a beautiful functional family home with every nook and cranny packed full of objects. Last up is a bungalow that’s had a serious glow-up. Despite the tough task our property aficionados bring skill and humour to their judging. In between snooping through the contestants’ storage solutions, our nosy neighbours discuss the big questions of the day: “Is wallpaper art?” muses neighbour Greg, as electrician Alex bemoans the quality of the light fixtures and fittings. The Best House In Town is produced by Sidney Street. The Executive Producers are Karen Ross and Lucy Shepherd. The BBC Commissioning Editor is Carla-Maria Lawson.

Ainsley’s Caribbean Kitchen

It’s the penultimate week of Blind Auditions and coaches will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, Sir Tom Jones and Olly Murs are back in their red chairs looking for the nation’s best vocal talent. The auditionees must make the coaches turn in their chairs by impressing them with their vocals and earning a coveted place on one of the coaches’ teams. The acts will be singing for their chance to win a recording contract with Polydor Records.

Ainsley takes the 20-minute plane trip to the island of Tobago, where seafood is king. Starting off with a trip to see Miss Trim – who cooks up the best crab ‘n’ dumplings on the island, Ainsley is inspired to cook his own version of Tobago blue crab with hand clapped roti’s. Ainsley’s next stop is to see Kenneth and Alison Sardinha, who teach him about Tobago cuisine whilst whipping up a dougla rum chicken dish. Heading across the island to the fishing village of Charlottesville, Ainsley helps bring in the catch of the day and picks up some fish for his recipe – mustard fish and mango chili chow. The chef ends the day with a relaxing boat trip to experience the Nylon Pool, where locals claim the water here has the ability to rejuvenate anyone lucky enough to swim in it. To reflect his experience at Nylon Pool, Ainsley wraps up his time in Tobago by mixing up a bluewater breeze cocktail.

The Death Of Aimee Spencer Thursday 14th February, ITV1, 21.00

“We were told that she went out the window, they didn’t say how. Was she pushed, did she go out on her own free will? That was the main question. My sister is scared of heights, what was she doing climbing out of a window?” - Daria Spencer, sister of Aimee This new documentary in the Crime & Punishment strand, fronted by Katie Piper, follows the police investigation into the mysterious death of Aimee Spencer, who fell from the window of a seafront flat in Brighton. The documentary delves deep inside the investigation, using interviews with detectives trying to solve the case, bodycam footage from officers who were at the scene, and footage of key developments to piece together how Aimee - an adult film star and webcam girl - came to fall to her death from a first-floor window. Katie also interviews Aimee’s parents to find out about the girl she was - and to piece together the background to how she might have ended up dying in such tragic circumstances.

Six Nations - Scotland v Ireland

Reigning Six Nations champions Ireland travel to Scotland, looking to avoid back-to-back defeats at Murrayfield. Presented by John Inverdale. Ireland dominated the 2018 tournament, winning all five matches en-route to claiming only their third Grand Slam. However, they have less happy memories of their last trip to Murrayfield in 2017 – Stuart Hogg scoring two tries as Scotland ran out 27-22 winners. Expert analysis comes from former Ireland and Scotland captains Paul O’Connell and Andy Nicol plus injured Scotland flanker John Barclay and England’s World Cup winning captain Martin Johnson. Commentary is from Eddie Butler, Chris Paterson and Jamie Heaslip.

Endeavour ITV1, 20.00

With the Cowley team scattered across Oxfordshire, Endeavour finds himself policing a lonely country patch, and back in uniform. His day job is a monotonous investigation of missing livestock and stolen tractors. But when he discovers the dead body of a missing schoolgirl, it opens this quiet backwater to the roar of Castle Gate CID – now staffed by Thursday and an old adversary, the newly promoted DCI Ronnie Box, alongside sidekick DS Alan Jago. Box is keen to get Endeavour out of the picture, but when Endeavour’s own investigations manage to uncover a potential suspect – a homeless drugfuelled teenager named Stanley – Box dangles the suggestion that the arrest could be Endeavour’s way back into CID. However, when Thursday reveals to Endeavour that he knows the suspect from an old murder case, they start to worry that they have the wrong man. With Thursday’s hands tied, Endeavour resolves to prove the teenager’s innocence and uncover the truth behind the young girl’s murder.

James’ adventure begins in the Orkney islands, a place he’s never been and is excited to explore. He’s joined by top Scottish chef and good friend Nick Nairn. James gets straight to it and shops for hand-dived scallops, before setting up his mobile kitchen in Stromness Harbour to make BBQ scallops with black pudding, apple and hazelnut butter. Nick is checking out 18th-century Barony Mill and the bere meal that they produce. He’s also stopping in on a young guy who’s using bere meal to distil the best vinegar Nick has ever tasted. James then uses the meal to create his classic brandy snaps with Scotch whisky cream. Next, James is taking to the skies to visit North Ronaldsea, one of the most remote of the Orkney islands and home to Billy Muir, who rears a unique herd of sheep. They outnumber the human inhabitants of the island and feed on seaweed. Back on the mainland, James cooks up some of Billy’s lamb chops on the barbecue with chimichurri sauce, broccoli and new potatoes. James’ Orkney odyssey ends with a boat trip to catch the famous brown crab, which he uses to rustle up a gorgeous Orkney crab pasta for Nick, back in Stromness.

Fake paediatrician stole parents’ new-born baby A WOMAN, pretending to be a paediatrician, was detained in Cabanillas del Campo last Saturday after taking a baby from the University Hospital of Guadalajara.

The baby boy, born on 30th January, was taken by the 47-year-old, who was dressed in a doctor’s robe. She entered the maternity room, asking if routine checks had been carried out on the new-born, such as the heel test. That’s an analytical blood test, carried out between the first 48 and 72 hours after the baby is born, to detect congenital diseases. When the baby’s father told her the examination hadn’t been performed, the fraudulent woman told family members she would take the child to carry out the test. Family members reported the incident after discovering she was a fake “paediatrician”, and, fortunately, security

Children stub out their Dad!

A COURT in Cordoba, Andalusia, has awarded primary custody of two children to their mother, because the judge learned from the youngsters that the father was a “pathological smoker”.

cameras recorded her leaving the premises with the baby in her arms. The National Police and Guardia Civil carried out immediate vehicle inspections

in Guadalajara and neighbouring locations. Happily, officers were able to locate the woman and child, after they had been recorded at a pharmacy, and the

new-born was returned to his parents, safe and sound. The fraudster, who was arrested at her home, had recently lost a baby, according to her neighbours.

Marine National Park is a ‘mini- Mediterranean’

THE largest marine park in the Western Mediterranean was opened off the coast of Mallorca last Friday, after a decade of planning to increase protection there. The Cabrera National Park, south of the island, which covers a huge area, began

31 CW

as a joint land-and-seaprotected area in 1991. It has the maximum level of legal protection for a natural space under Spanish law, and Ricardo Aguilar, of the Oceana Europe environmental NGO, said the park’s

opening was a “great day” for the Mediterranean. “This is home to an enormous amount of marine life and ecosystems, so it is an emblem of the submerged, natural heritage we must pass on to future generations,” he added. “It

truly is a Mediterranean in miniature.” The National Park increases the size of the ocean-part of the protected area from 4% to 23%, and is home to marine life, including sperm whales, dolphins, coral, swordfish and bluefin tuna.

The judge said: “It would not be logical if children are not protected in their home, a place society deems ‘protected,’ for any citizen, young or old, when we have rules around public places, schools, work centres or health centres.” The children, aged 10 and 13, told the court they were concerned about smoke levels in their home, the elder sibling accusing the father of smoking in their bedroom.

Drink-driving copper jailed

A FORMER police officer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison, after drinkdriving and fleeing from officers.

The man drove when drunk and smashed into a moped, injuring a tourist and two other people. And, following this booze-fuelled crash in Mijas in 2014, the officer fled the scene in another vehicle to avoid a breathalyser test. Now, though, the former cop is being tried over a fatal accident on the A-7 in Torremolinos in 2017. A judge found that the ex-copper was “perfectly aware of the protocols, and how to act in accordance with the legislation in force, in cases of accidents involving drivers under the influence of alcohol”. Of the incident in which he fled the police, the suspect appeared to be agitated, making frantic phone calls after being pulled from his car. Police said he had booze on his breath, but sped away in a car on the other side of the road to avoid being breathalysed. Despite being injured, the man also avoided going to hospital.

WORKERS at a Valladolid funeral home have been accused of removing bodies from their expensive caskets and placing them in cheaper ones before cremation.

In a joint investigation with the Spanish Tax Agency, police officers are investigating the funeral home, in northwest Spain, for, allegedly, removing bodies from their caskets and placing them in cheaper versions before cremation. The intention, confirmed by police sources, was to resell the more expensive coffins. The information has been published by online Spanish newspaper Eldiario.es, which is continuing its investigation. So far 16 people, some from the same family, have been arrested, and the probe has sparked searches of three of the company’s offices, and in the homes of some of those arrested. These activities took place while wakes were being held at El Salvador’s funeral parlour, in Valladolid. The investigation began in 2017, triggered by a complaint from one of the company’s employees, even though Grupo El Salvador is one of the biggest funeral businesses in the province. According to its website,

Coffin-swap scam ‘has cost bereaved families a fortune’

it has five funeral parlours in different municipalities: Valladolid, Medina de Rioseco, Tudela de Duero, Peñafiel and Mojados. And three more are being built in Tordesillas, Olmedo and Laguna de Duero. Since 2015, the company has also been managing the municipal funeral home of Montemayor de Pililla, and has provided complete funeral services for wakes in Tordesillas and Tudela de Duero. Investigators also believe

that the company reused the large flower wreaths purchased for wakes. Officers are not sure how long the socalled fraud has been going on, or how many families have been affected. But given the high cost of funerals, the police suspect that the company has been making millions. A burial can cost between €2,500 and €6,500, and much of the cost is down to the casket, which can cost anywhere between €600 and €4,000. The region’s central

government delegate, Virginia Barcones, said that up to €1m in cash had been found in the home of one of the company’s owners. El Salvador, a family-run business, handed down from generation to generation, presents itself as a leader in funeral services in the Castilla y León region. Yet last Thursday morning, the company refused to take any calls from journalists. In the afternoon, a secretary announced that the firm would be making a statement in the next few hours. “The matter is in the hands of the company’s lawyers,” she said, without confirming or denying the accusations. “All these claims came from a disgruntled employee who reported them, and who has already faced the company in court.” Grupo El Salvador managers issued a public statement in which they said the scandal was down to a blackmailing former employee, who, after a lawsuit with the company, was found guilty of extortion.

“In 2017, the company was financially blackmailed by a former employee,” said the managers in a statement. “In exchange for large quantities of money, the employee would not reveal certain, irregular practices the company had, allegedly, committed.” And, according to the statement, the company itself filed a complaint against the former employee, and initiated proceedings. It added: “That led to a criminal trial, in which the former employee, who had been retired for two years, was sentenced to a year in prison.” The statement added that the investigation “was a “separate offshoot of the previous judicial proceedings, and the result of a complaint filed previously against Grupo El Salvador” The company emphasised: “Since the beginning, it has upheld rigorous controls that assure and guarantee total transparency in the cremation process. “All of the group’s funeral homes have rooms where the family can see the coffin enter the cremation area.” The prosperous family business, established in December 1985, has “offered more than 30 years of comprehensive mortuary services in the capital of Valladolid as well as in the rest of the province.”

Women must report any gender violence

CARMEN Calvo, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, has pleaded for women to report any cases of gender violence they have seen, heard about, or even suffered themselves. She stressed that complaints to police were “vital”, to

ensure that the victims received protection. “None of the genderviolence victims so far this year has reported her partner or ex-partner’s behaviour to the police,” said Calvo. Her plea follows the violencerelated deaths of six women already this year, from what were believed to be gender killings, according to Government figures.

Holidays in jeopardy

JERSEY tourists heading to Tenerife might not be jetting off in the near future, because Germania, the airline providing the island’s direct flights, has folded. The company was set to oper-

ate FlyDirect’s routes from tomorrow (Saturday) until the end of April, but it has filed for insolvency. Travel agents are trying to find an alternative charter airline, and will keep passengers updated.

Wealth beyond belief! SPANISH newspaper El Mundo’s annual Rich List shows that the world’s richest retailer, Amancio Ortega, owner and founder of the Inditex group, which includes Zara, still retains Spain’s No.1 spot, with a net worth of €50.4 billion. The 82-year-old, also sixth richest in the world, is miles ahead of his competitors, the nearest being Rafael del Pino and his family, who own construction giant Ferrovial, and are worth €7.6bn. Third is Juan Roig Alfonso and his family, owners of Mercadona Distribution, who

have a combined worth of €7bn. Also in the top 10 is the owner of Coca Cola European Partners, Sol Daurella Comadran, and family (€6.3bn), as well as Amancio Ortega’s eldest daughter, Sandra, who is Inditex partowner (€5.3bn).

Briton held as Guardia seize 2,500 Viagra pills

A BRITISH man has been arrested, and 30 other people investigated, as Mallorca’s Guardia Civil cracked a huge, dodgy, supply chain of the sex drug Viagra.

Guardia officers seized 2,500 doses of the prohibited, sexenhancement drugs, having raided 50 establishments on the Balearic island. Those involved were accused of “crimes against public health”, after police seized 15 toilet-vending machines used to sell the sex enhancer. The drug haul was seized as part of Operation Foxtier, which focused on the Calvia and Palma Nova towns, near

British party hotspot Magaluf. The pills are a natural substitute for Viagra, labelled with names such as “Boner Gold” and “Maxx Blue” which, a Guardia video shows, were to be sold for €5 a pill. Also, on the “Maxx Blue” packet in the video, the “Wolfberry extract”, known as Goji berry, can be seen listed as one of the ingredients. Boxes appeared to show the logo of sexual-products company Naughty Originals, which also sells sex toys, furry handcuffs and “flashing, LED boobie lights”. According to Companies House, the adult company, founded in 1998, is based in Central London, near Russell Square, and its director is David Wills.

Despite its apparent involvement in the Viagra delivery, Naughty Originals was previously categorised as dormant, a company which has had “no significant transactions in the financial year”. Its last balance sheet, in 2016, showed net assets of just £100. The substances seized by police are banned by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Health Products (AEMPS), yet the drugs contain ‘sildenafil’, the same active ingredient as Viagra, which is not approved by AEMPS for public sale. Guardia officers also seized over €2,000 in cash, as well as documents relating to other Mallorcan establishments.

Popular Pope is leading the way SPANISH people have voted Pope Francis the most popular world leader, with 75% of the population viewing him positively, according to a new survey. The Sigma Dos poll also found German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the most popular European leader, with a 58% approval rating. Rosa Diaz, director of Sigma Dos, said Pope Francis remained “unbeatable” in Spain, adding: “The Pope’s approval is among the highest in the world. There is the Spanish-speaking influence, as well as Spain being mostly Catholic.” But the survey made British Prime Minister Theresa May

the least-popular European leader in Spain. Some 26% of poll respondents supported her, while 53% disapproved. The Sigma Dos survey saw

almost 47,000 people across the world polled. And US President Donald Trump was voted the most unpopular leader, globally, with a -28% approval rating.

Uber and Cabify finish operating in Barcelona

FROM today (Friday), UberX will have been forced to quit operating in Barcelona, following the Catalonia Government’s new laws, requiring a minimum 15-minute wait between ordering a taxi and being picked up.

The licence to rent vehicles

and drivers (VTC) has also been withdrawn, and a second private-hire company, Cabify, also announced it would cease operating in the city, following the law changes. A Uber spokesman said: “Given the restriction, approved by the Generalitat de Cataluña, we are forced to suspend the UberX service in Barcelona. “Thousands of drivers and users of the VTC will see their livelihood disappear, and their freedom to choose how

they move around their city.” The spokesman later said: “We are committed to being a long-term partner to Spanish cities, and we hope to work with the Catalan Government and the City Council on fair regulation for all.” Uber said it hoped to work with the Catalan Government to create a new law, regulating private-hire vehicles, which would allow the company to resume operating in the future.

Learning about dogs! WE have, once again, started our educational programme, and the local schools and colleges are trying to raise awareness of the on-going plight of the dogs in Tenerife.

We firmly believe in educating the school children regarding how to care for their pets in the correct way, and to understand that dogs do have feelings, and need love, good food, regular walks and proper health care. All of these things can reduce the number of abandoned dogs, and give them a better quality of life. Our next event Please remember our next event at the refuge which is on 24th February at 10am, where we will join together and walk some of the refuge dogs to the beach. We want to raise awareness of adopting and not buying, when our refuge has 230 gorgeous dogs all looking for loving, new homes. Please call us to reserve a dog for the walk. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can

help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. Micky’s microchip miracle! WE can never stress enough the importance of having your pet microchipped, and this story proves how vital it is! One of our dedicated volunteers, Linda, was distraught, when her beloved cat Micky (pictured) disappeared. He had been missing for almost three months when she received a phone call from a vet, to say that they had him at their surgery. He had been found, drinking water from the community pool on a

complex near Adeje golf course. He was meowing a lot, and, as he was very friendly, the couple took him to their apartment and fed him. He stayed there for three weeks, but, because they had to go back to the UK, they were trying to find someone to look after him. They decided to take him to a vet, just in case, to check for a microchip. As you can imagine, Linda and her family are over the moon. Quite how he managed to get from Palm Mar to the Adeje golf course area, they will never know. Without a microchip, he would not be home with them now.

They had advertised the fact that he was missing all over Facebook, in the Canarian Weekly, and everywhere in between. He seemed fine, slightly thinner than he was when he vanished, but, otherwise, in good health. He is very streetwise, independent and friendly, so Linda is sure all of these things helped. There was a €200 reward, but the couple have donated this to Cats Welfare. The family would like to thank them from the bottom of their hearts, for everything they have done. If only there were more people like them! Cats Welfare will be running a special offer for microchips before long, so please continue to watch our Facebook page. Adoptions We have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone’s sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven

years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. As previously mentioned, all cats go for a week’s trial, in your home. Clothes, books and jigsaws needed We are appealing to you all, please, for both ladies’ and men’s clothes, for our shop. We also urgently need books of all genres, and in great condition, as well as jigsaws. Please

have a dig around at home, and drop them into the shop. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at

sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Meet Chula! CHULA is a small podencocross, who was found in Vilaflor as a puppy. She is quiet and loving, and approximately 12 months old. The couple who found her were happy to keep her as she is a sweetheart. However, with her hunting instinct, consistent with her breed, they can’t, because they have chickens and ducks. She is good with other dogs, and amazing with children. She has finished growing, so will not be the size of a normal podenco. She is easy to walk, and on Saturdays the children like to walk her at the refuge. She would be an ideal family dog, but not suitable for homes with cats or small farm animals. Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dog-walking club on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you can keep fit and find a furry friend at the same time. MOST countries have national shrines, but few of them can claim a beginning as unique, and a history as chequered, as the one in Candelaria.

As everyone knows, it is named the Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Candelaria, and is a centre of devotion to the Virgin Mary. The origin reaches back for more than 600 years, when, according to legend, two shepherds, members of the Guanches, who inhabited the islands for more than 2,000 years, discovered a wooden image of a woman on the shore, following a storm. She was depicted with blonde hair, wearing a brightly-coloured dress. She was also carrying a child in one hand and a candle in the other. And, after a number of unusual incidents associated with the image, the shepherds became convinced that it had miraculous powers. The chief of the tribe, to whom they delivered it, also arrived at that conclusion. The image, placed in a basilica-shaped cave, was an object of veneration, and it became a major goddess of the Guanche pantheon, after many years,

How the Virgin Mary came to settle down in in Candelaria basilica

Adventurers from the Kingdom of Castile, later to be a Spanish province, conquered the Canary Islands in the 1470s. They were accompanied by the missionary Franciscan and Dominican friars, who converted the native

population to Christianity. The religious devotions and practices, popular before their arrival, including an image of the candle-carrying woman. And, in time, that devotion morphed into devotion to the Virgin Mary. The image was installed in a

chapel and shrine, built by order of the governor of the islands in 1497. The Dominican friars, who were placed in charge of it, built their convent next to it. The Royal Marian shrine of Our Lady was enhanced when Pope Clement VIII

37 CW

declared the Virgin Mary to be patroness of the Canary Islands in 1559. Tragically, the sanctuary and the Dominican convent were destroyed in a 1789 fire. However, the image was saved, only to go missing in a subsequent flood. But a new image was commissioned, and consecrated in 1830. After the inauguration of an anti-clerical, Madrid administration in 1836, the Dominicans were expelled from their convent and the sanctuary. They returned in 1922, and, immediately, set about the construction of a basilica on the site of the original church and sanctuary, which was completed in 1959. Surrounding the basilica is a large square, with one side bearing a line of huge, life-sized figures of the nine Guanche chiefs, who ruled various parts of the islands when the Castilian adventurers arrived. The imposing basilica building is one of Spain’s major pilgrimage shrines, and is a prime attraction for the many thousands of tourists visiting Tenerife each year. If you haven’t yet had the sheer joy of seeing the basilica and its surroundings, then waste no time, whatever your religion!

Jason is so drawn to the Tenerife Magnet! K E D D Y ’ S Entertainment is continually on the look-out for new and different artistes, from all walks of life, who bring brandnew talent to this wonderful island. So we are pleased to welcome and introduce Jason Farley, an experienced DJ and compere. We thought it would be interesting to catch up with him, to ask a few questions about his life and career. We wanted to know what he offers as an entertainer, and why he left the UK, choosing sunny Tenerife to live. Apart from the obvious, which is our beautiful weather, coupled with our splendid backdrop of amazing scenery, it’s probably not that difficult to understand! There are, of course, other islands and beautiful locations which are similarly blessed, too. So why Tenerife? What is it about the “Tenerife Magnet” that appears to be so irresistible to our wonderful, talented, resident entertainers? Jason describes Tenerife as his little bit of beautiful paradise. He has travelled far and wide, working in many different locations, performing and hosting. But when it came to leaving the UK, and settling down and working more permanently in one place, Tenerife was a foregone conclusion! It is, in his opinion, an island like no other, because it’s so versatile, multi-national and

dynamic. He loves the fact that he can meet and make new friends, from all over the world. “I think it’s because I have been visiting Tenerife, and spending time here, as a holidaymaker, for over 16 years,” he said. “Consequently, I have built up so many happy, wonderful memories of partying here, having great times and being thoroughly entertained! My partner and I made the big move from the UK in August, last year.” Jason has worked in, and been involved with, the entertainment industry for 27 years, and can draw on a wealth of different experiences. He has been fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of working with some amazing people, who have supported him and helped hone his skills, over many

years. He prides himself on always being friendly and approachable, which he feels is so important. He says his role “is to make sure that the audience and guests are having fun, and enjoying themselves”. When he is working, his mantra is: “If the audience don’t leave with smiles on their faces, I have not done my job correctly”. One of his favourite, all-time highlights, was working with the fabulous Paul O’Grady on his TV show, hosting Paul’s wonderful and highly-successful aftershow parties in London, at the ITV studios. Jason has performed in several musicals, such as “Little Shop of Horrors”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “A Little Night Music”, and “The Mystery of Edwin Drood”, to name but a few.

He has also had the privilege of hosting large events, in beautiful and exotic places, such as Australia, Ibiza, Kos and South Africa. And now he is pleased to be settled here in Tenerife, performing as a DJ and compere. Jason’s journey into the music industry began when he was just a boy of 16! “I was given the opportunity of helping to host a friend’s party,” he recalled. “He was an experienced DJ, and went on to become my mentor. He encouraged me, and was very aware of my passion and love for all types of music and entertainment. “He was so impressed that he offered me a job, helping him as his ‘roadie’! And I was nicknamed ‘Apprentice George’.” Jason believes that there is no better

education than learning on the job. He wants to generate a great atmosphere, to enable his audience to have lots of fun, and create happy memories. “Working here is different from back in the UK. People are much more relaxed, wanting to have a great night out, and some well-deserved fun. Since being here, I have worked with some really supportive and excellent acts. The help and assistance, shown me since my arrival, has been wonderful. “And now, with the support of Keddy’s Entertainment, I am beginning to experience working more within the hotel industry, as an entertainer, artiste and DJ. “I thoroughly enjoy performing, and play all music, spanning every era and taste. I am pleased to be working with some truly professional people, who share the same passion and commitment as I do. “I would like to take the opportunity of mentioning what a pleasure it has been working with Tony Kay, as ‘Gary Barlow’, and

the sounds of ‘Take That’, before he goes back to the UK.” Keddy’s Entertainment certainly wish Jason a hugely-successful career, here in Tenerife. Whoever it was who said: “If you love what you’re doing, then you’re not really working’, summed up Jason, perfectly, as far as Keddy’s Entertainment is concerned! So, from all of us here at Keddy’s Entertainment, whether you’re visiting on holiday, or our lovely residents, make sure you continue to sample all our different, entertainment delights. Enjoy the cold beer, warm, winter sunshine, and have a very entertaining year. Hopefully, Tenerife will continue to attract a great mix of talent, providing brilliant holiday memories, as Jason has described, to create that “Tenerife Magnet”. Long may it continue! By Val Sainsbury MOST of us have seen, first-hand, the devastating consequences of Alzheimer’s, but half of UK adults cannot identify any key risk factors for dementia, according to a study by Alzheimer’s Research UK.

The charity surveyed 2,361 people, and found that only 1% were able to name the seven known risk, or protective, factors for dementia. The six risk factors are heavy drinking, genetics, smoking, high blood pressure, depression and diabetes, and physical exercise offers protection against the disease. The study, entitled Dementia Attitudes Monitor, found that more than half of UK adults now know someone with dementia. But only half recognised that dementia is a cause of death, and they discovered that a fifth incorrectly believe it is an inevitable part of getting older. Although a third of cases of dementia are thought to be influenced by factors within our control, only 34% of people surveyed believe it is possible to reduce the risk of dementia, compared with 77% for heart disease, and 81% for diabetes.

Alzheimer’s still a puzzle to many

Hilary Evans, chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said that, despite growing dementia awareness, there was still a lot of misinformation. “It is a sad truth that more people are affected by dementia than ever before, and half of us now know someone with the condition,” she said. “Yet, despite growing dementia awareness, we must work harder to improve understanding of the diseases that cause it.”

More than 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, and this number is set to rise to more than one million, by 2025. Dementia is an umbrella term for a set of symptoms which affect cognitive function, such as memory loss, confusion and personality change, which get worse over time. Alzheimer’s disease is the most-common cause of dementia, accounting for approximately two-thirds of all cases. An individual’s risk

of developing dementia is made up of different factors including age, genetics and lifestyle. The charity said reducing the number of people who believe that dementia is an inevitable part of ageing is key, as this belief drives other negative attitudes towards dementia. “Our findings show that those who believe dementia is an inevitable part of ageing are less likely to see the value in seeking a formal diagnosis,

and are less likely to engage with research developments that could bring about lifechanging treatments, and, ultimately, a cure.” The study found key groups of people whose understanding of dementia is lower, including those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, and adults under 24 and over 65. There is not currently a test for dementia, but the survey found that if there were a breakthrough in research, 85% would be willing to take a test through their doctor, before symptoms showed. As previously mentioned, other health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure, might increase the risk of developing dementia. A healthy diet and regular exercise can combat these conditions, which might, in turn, have an impact on dementia risk. However, these correlations are crucial for research. And when there are recurring findings over multiple studies, the evidence becomes more compelling, and something worth paying attention to. There is no downside to eating healthfully, engaging in physical and mental activities, and staying socially connected. Even if they are not yet proved to prevent Alzheimer’s disease, they are all extremely good for your mind and body, and will improve the quality of your life.

vehicle. This issue will focus on brakes. Let's look at, probably, the most important component on your car … the brake pads. There are on the market, in general, three types of pads. The type that you have fitted will depend on a lot of different factors. · Organic car brake pads are generally the cheapest. They won't last very long, and will require replacing more frequently, meaning that, in reality, they are not “cheap”. · Low metallic brake pads can be noisy, but have a slightly longer life expectancy than organic. Again, this cheaper option is price versus quality and life expectancy. · Semi-metallic brake pads are, generally, middle-of-the-road, and

have a reasononable life expectancy. · Ceramic brake pads last longer than other materials, and are more resistant to wear. They are the most expensive, but you will get more kilometres from these, and have better braking. In the long run, they work out cheaper. They are also a safer option, with regard to hard braking in an emergency. Usually, front brake pads will wear out faster than those at the rear, because the front handles more of the braking load. The type of brake pad that should be fitted can also depend on your vehicle, its normal load and your type of driving, i.e. around town, long distance etc., and all these things should be factored into your decision.

In hot climates, the car runs hotter, as do the brakes, so a good braking system is essential for the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users. If your car is not fitted with a sensor which alerts you that the pads need replacing, you need to be aware that the following things can be symptoms or signs that they need replacing. If you can hear a loud screeching sound when braking, it's a real warning sign that new brake pads are needed. If you hear a grinding noise, it's likely that the brake pads have been worn down completely. By visually checking your car, it is possible to look at brake pads, and identify wear and tear. Pads should be visible by

looking through the spokes of the car's wheel; the outside pad is pressed against a metal rotor. There should be at least three millimetres of the pad visible. If you see anything less, get the brake pads inspected. If the car is pulling to one side while you are driving, it's also likely that the brake pads need to be changed. Another sign is if there are bad vibrations through the brake pedal, when you put your foot down on it. This could mean the pads have warped due to heat, which is quite a common problem here in Tenerife. If you have any concerns regarding your brakes, visit a garage, making sure that it's legally registered with Industria, to ensure you are safeguarded.

CD Tenerife

Another good away point for Tenerife

AFTER a strong performance, and a good point at home against Malaga, Tenerife faced a tough trip to third-placed Deportivo, in front of 18,000 fans in Galicia. The players needed to be strong again to maintain the momentum they had started to build in their opening matches of 2019. Deportivo are renowned for having big possession at home, and they always seem to score, so Oltra’s men were aware of the tough challenge ahead last

Saturday. Both teams fought for possession and neither dominated in a closely-fought first-half, in which Deportivo, unusually, defended more than attacked, which was a rare sight for home fans. And Tenerife, employing great work from the midfield trio of Racic, Lasso and Milla, did well to control the home team’s attacking onslaught when they did come forward. In fact, the visitors had the only clear opportunity of the first half, when a good cross from Luis Milla was met by Malbasic, whose shot was

stopped with a superb save from Deportivo’s keeper. The second half started with Deportivo trying to take control and put Tenerife in trouble. Two early shots from Quique put CDT under pressure, and he came close to scoring. Deportivo coach Natxo González made changes to try to find the solution for a break-through. But the Galicians’ play was cold, without rhythm or spark, and Oltra’s men kept to their game plan, covering the home side’s attacking options. In fact, Tenerife felt so comfortable that they had a

couple of good attacks themselves, with efforts from Naranjo and Malbasic causing the home side danger. With 15 minutes to go, Deportivo had one more roll of the dice by giving their latest signing, striker Nahuel Leiva, from Argentina, a run-out to see if his pace could inject some much-needed fire into their play. As it happens, it nearly worked. Twice, he broke free down the left wing and crossed for Quique, who couldn’t finish off the moves, and failed to bother the Tenerife keeper. Overall, the match finished in

a fair draw, which will have left Tenerife much happier than Deportivo, who must have viewed the outcome as two points lost. Although the result leaves Tenerife in 15th place, their next matches are against less-formidable opponents, notably two of the bottom three in their next four matches: at home to Cordoba tomorrow (Saturday) and away to Reus on 3rd March. If they continue with their good form, these games should see them rise quickly up the table towards a position they feel they should be in.

Spain’s record crowd for women’s football

Women’s Football

TENS of thousands of female football fans turned up last week to watch Athletic Bilbao and Atlético Madrid meet in Bilbao’s San Mamés stadium, and, unknowingly, creating records at the same time. It was a great success for the women’s game in Spain, and even players from other teams in the Iberdrola League, the country’s First Division competition, remarked on the breathtaking 48,121 attendance on social media. The teams were battling for a semi-final place in the Copa de la Reina, the equivalent of the men’s Copa del Rey. Atlético won 2-0, thanks to midfielders Ángela Sosa, who scored in the first half, and Aurélie Kaci, who clinched the match in the 94th minute. The event marked a milestone for women’s football in Spain, because, despite the excitement built up ahead of

the clash, no one expected such a high attendance. No other stadium in Spain has seen so many spectators for a women’s sporting event, and the mighty attendance was 8,000 more than the numbers turning up for the Athletic Bilbao against Real Betis in a La Liga match last Sunday. In

fact, it was the largest crowd seen at the stadium. The women’s attendance breaks the previous record, also set in Bilbao, by 12,000 people. In 2003, in their former stadium, 36,000 spectators watched Athletic beat Seville’s Hispalis 5-1. What’s more, the 48,000-

strong crowd is the secondlargest ever to attend a women’s football game, worldwide. The attendance has been beaten only by the 51,211 people who turned out to see the Monterrey-Tigres game, in the Mexican League last year.

The last three finals of the women’s Champions League would need to be totted up to come close to the turnout at San Mamés. And, to add to the gloss, this record was set on a rainy, miserable night in the middle of winter. Athletic Bilbao are one of the clubs to invest most in women’s soccer. The club invited more than 100 women to last week’s match, including former players, and people from various fields of politics and sports, and even Basque Premier Iñigo Urkullo was there. Yet the stands did not fill up until 15 minutes into the game. When Catalan referee Acevedo Dudley gave Atlético midfielder Kenti Robles a red card, preventing her from playing in the second half, it spelled the end of her team’s dream. Yet the team pressed hard and had their opportunities, but rivals Athletic prevailed in the end. But the most-talked-about subject, then and for many weeks, will surely be the astonishing crowd figures!

Football A BODY discovered in the seabed wreckage of the plane, which disappeared with Cardiff City-bound footballer Emiliano Sala onboard, has been brought to the surface.

It was not clear when we went to Press last night whether the corpse, recovered by divers yesterday morning (Thursday), was that of former Palma de Soledad forward Sala, 28, or pilot David Ibbotson, 59. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) launched an investigation when the aircraft was lost at sea on 21st January, while travelling over the English Channel from Nantes, France, to Cardiff. Sala had been signed by Cardiff City for a club-record €17m. In a statement yesterday, the AAIB said: “Unfortunately,

JOSE Mourinho, the coach sacked by Manchester United earlier this season, has accepted a oneyear prison sentence and a €2m fine for defrauding the Spanish Tax Agency in 2011 and 2012.

According to the agreement with Spanish public prosecutors, the football coach created the Koper Services SA company to “financially hide the profits made from his image rights”. Before September 2004, he signed a contract that ceded his image rights to the company, located in the Virgin Islands. In March 2010, Mourinho was hired to manage Spanish team Real Madrid and moved to Spain’s capital. But in the following two years, the coach “did not declare any income from his image rights”. This evasion cost the Tax Agency €1.6m in 2011

and almost €1.7million the following year. Mourinho has been sentenced to six months in prison for each of the crimes, and must pay a 60% fine on the defrauded sums: €966,922.56 in 2011 and €1,015,879.83 in 2012. He must also cover legal costs. The one-year prison sentence has been substituted for a €172,800 fine because firsttime offenders in Spain, given jail terms of under two years, rarely see the inside of a prison.

The renowned coach joins a long list of stars to be named as tax dodgers by the Spanish Tax Agency. Two weeks ago, Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo accepted a 23-month jail sentence and a €18.8m fine for tax fraud. And, last year, Argentina’s Barçelona superstar Lionel Messi, and his father, received jail sentences and fines for three tax offences. Popular Colombian singer Shakira is currently accused of evading €14.5m in Spanish taxes.
