Cops and Customs nail a major drug-dealing gang

Continued from Front The organisation had been operating successfully on the island for some time… until some members were arrested, along with the seizure of 13 kilos of cocaine and a form of cutting agent, as well as the Ecstasy drug and 48,000 euros in cash! The official operation began in 2014, when Customs officers spotted a small package, which appeared suspicious. They found that it contained some type of pharmaceutical chemicals, as well as ephedrine, which is a controlled substance, used to prepare and cut narcotics. A second, similar parcel arrived, and was also checked by Customs. This one carried one kilo of phenylethylamine hydrochloride, which is a major stimulant, and can be dangerous. The police, who began to investigate the recipient and his address, realised that the

packages had the drugs, as well as the necessary equipment for cutting them. During their probe, the cops discovered that they had uncovered an active, dedicated, drug organisation. But their operation became difficult, because the recipient was always extremely careful, watching his back and leaving no trace. He used various techniques to ensure that he couldn’t be followed, changing vehicles and routes, and having overnight stays at different addresses. He also used public telephones, rather than a mobile phone. But, over time, the police investigation led to the joint forces identifying different suppliers, as well as the recipients. And, thanks to the efforts of the combined forces, the huge operation, involving narcotics across Tenerife, was unravelled.

Woman claims ex-partner sexually-abused daughter PLAYA San Juan’s Guardia Civil are investigating a report made by a woman, claiming her former partner had sexuallyabused her young daughter.

The woman admitted she had just separated from her partner, who had shared the lives of her and her daughter for several years. The daughter, now aged 15,

said the incidents occurred when she was 13, and the abuse consisted of her being touched by the man in question in intimate areas, and in a sexual manner. The Guardia have taken a statement from the ex-partner, and the corresponding reports will be presented before a judge at the Arona court house. Although the Guardia have opened an investigation, no precautionary measure has been taken in respect of the accusation.

Key man’s death fall A MAN who forgot to take his front-door keys with him when going out, fell to his death while climbing from window to window, at a Costa del Sol apartment block. Emergency services were alerted to the 45-yearold’s fall by a neighbour, in Malaga’s Mijas town last Friday. Health workers could only confirm his death, and Guardia Civil officers are investigating the tragic incident.

Termite plague can affect every island, warns a bug expert

TACORONTE, an area in the North of Tenerife which had been plagued by woodeating termites for several weeks, now appears to be clear, thanks to a solution called hexaflumuron.

But bug expert David Mora del Pozo, who has studied termites for 20 years, has still issued a stark warning to officials in the Canary Islands. “If we don’t eradicate the termite, the whole archipelago will be affected in a matter of time,” he said. Since 2012, he has been head of the termite department at Anticimex España, one of 60 companies authorised in Spain to use hexaflumuron. And it is the only product which appears to be successful, when it comes to eradicating these pests. David came into contact with a termite problem in 2010, when residents in a complex found their homes infested. Anticimex was called in, and the treatment used was hexaflumuron, which proved successful. Termites can be detected by lifting any dead wood, which is half-buried, and their appearance is similar to that of white ants, comparable with the size of a grain of rice. Inside the house, it is not so easy to detect them if they

have been there for a short time, because they invade the wood from the ground, inside the walls. Over time, ripples are visible in the varnish, which sink inwards when you feel them with your hand. Another characteristic from this type of insect is that it avoids being out in the open, because it can dehydrate. In 2017, there was clearly a need for global intervention, before the spread of termites reached a point of no return. And, said David: “If we reach the point of no return in the Canaries, it will be impossible to eradicate them. “To get rid of the pest is a difficult task anyway, because this type of insect is known as the ‘invisible enemy’. Their work is destructive, and they act out of sight.” When studies of the termites and genetic analysis were carried out to determine the different species, it was discovered that the American Termite was responsible for the Tenerife infestations. But, as stated, the only proven product, no matter how big the termite colony, is hexaflumuron, and all 100 homes were treated and cleared in the affected Tacoronte complex there. University of La Laguna researchers are already warning the population about the risks of infestations, stressing that the public need to have a basic knowledge when it

comes to these termites, especially an understanding of how fast a colony can grow and spread. The termites can be transported in soil plants or even pots, accidentally, and they have the capacity to develop secondary reproducers. They will succeed, rapidly, in infesting a new area, and, worryingly, they can also be transported via foods, which is why the problem can spread island to island. Experts are calling for a global intervention on these termites, in the hope of eradication. Mainland Spain has endured a 70-year battle with the subterranean termite, where there has been irreparable damage to significant buildings of Cultural and Historical Heritage, such as the Mosque of Cordoba, and Madrid’s El Escoria. True, these bugs cannot cause health problems to humans, and the only risk would be if the termites were settled in the structure of the property, which would, potentially, be at risk of collapsing. The termite issue has been discussed for some time, without proper treatment being initiated, and the plague will continue to spread in Tenerife if there is no proper control within the archipelago. If you feel as though you might have some sort of infestation on its way, you must call your Town Hall’s Environmental Department.

Missing armbands cost a four-year-old his life

PRESLEY Stockton, the four-year-old boy from Wigan who drowned in a Tenerife hotel pool last year, had previously had his armbands removed so that he could have a snack, an inquest heard.

The tragedy occurred the day after his arrival at the four-star Paradise Park hotel in Los Cristianos, on 19th September last year, with his mum and dad and friends. Paramedics, called to the hotel complex at around 3.40pm, were unable to resuscitate him. A postmortem, conducted at Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, found that Presley, from Hindley, died from drowning. An inquest heard Presley, (pictured) had been “very excited” about going away with family and friends, especially his mum Kirsty Jolley and dad, Peter Stockton. Relatives didn’t attend the hearing, which consisted entirely of written statements from police, medical staff and members of Presley’s family. Evidence read out at the inquest said the youngster was “particularly excited” about swimming in the hotel pool. In a written statement, Mr Stockton said: “He was bought some armbands to wear around the pool, and

other items to play with, by his family. “On 19th September, Presley and his family had been around the pool, where he played wearing his armbands. At lunchtime, in the early afternoon, he had something to eat. “He complained that he couldn’t eat properly with the armbands on, so they were taken off.” A short time later, the inquest heard, the youngster headed for the pool with a group of youngsters. Senior coroner Alan Walsh said: “Suddenly, his father heard one of the children shouting ‘Presley’. “It

was discovered that he had gone in the pool. “He was rescued and attempts were made to resuscitate him, but, sadly, he had died at the hotel.” Senior coroner Mr Walsh concluded that Presley’s death was accidental. He said: “I am satisfied that precautions were taken. He had been playing around the pool wearing armbands. The problem seems to have arisen when he had something to eat. “They were taken off for a short time, and, during that short time, he was with his friends around the pool. He went in, and, sadly, became

unresponsive. “I accept that it was a sudden, unexpected event with unintended consequences. I am greatly saddened by the tragedy of a four-year-old, excited about his holiday and being with family and friends. “There were precautions taken, with the exception of that very short period. It’s unimaginable to me that this should occur in this moment.” The funeral of Presley Stockton was held at St Peter’s Church in Hindley, and Presley, known to his family as Little P, had just started school. After his death, Nicola Green, headteacher at St Peter’s CE

Primary School in Hindley, wrote an emotional tribute to the “bubbly” youngster. She said: “Presley had only been with us a short time, but was already a part of St Peter’s family. “He will always be part of our school community, and remembered by us all for his bubbly personality.” Since his death, the family, and, in particular, Presley’s grandad Mike Jolley, have campaigned to raise the importance of swimming lessons for youngsters. Mr Jolley, 49, said his grandson had been taken to the swimming baths as an infant, – but had never learned how to swim properly. He added: “When I was a child, it was compulsory to take swimming lessons, even at nursery. It should be like that now. “There should be more funding for youngsters of preschool age. I want to do this for Presley. I want to make people more aware of the importance of learning how to swim.” Mike is hoping to lobby the Government to provide more funding for pre-school swimming lessons. His campaign has been backed by Makerfield MP Yvonne Fovargue, who said: “This would be a fitting tribute to the memory of Presley. “Swimming is a vital life skill, that helps to keep people fit and healthy, but also teaches children how to stay safe, in and around water.”

Possible visa scheme ready to rock British BRITISH tourists could be facing a €60 charge to visit Europe, after Spanish demands over Gibraltar’s status derailed the EU’s visafree travel plans.

The dispute, about whether the British Overseas Territory should be described as a “colony”, threatens agreements on legislation, which exempts individual UK nationals from needing a travel permit. The European Parliament rejected a Spanish proposal that a footnote, containing the contentious description of the disputed territory, be added to the legislation.

It is the third time the proposal has been sent back by MEPs, increasing the risk the plan will not be in place

before the UK leaves. Czech MEP, Petr Ježek, told the Guardian newspaper that Spain was “playing with fire”,

just weeks before the UK departs from the EU. The plan would secure visa-free travel until 2021, but Brits will have

to pay €8 for three years of visa-free travel, under a new European Travel Information and Authorisation System. But if the current impasse is not broken, and the UK crashes out, Brits planning to stay in an EU country for under 90 days would have to pay €60 for a Schengen visa, which takes up to a fortnight to be authorised. Ježek said: “The negotiation is stuck, and Brexit will hurt immensely. We should do everything possible to soften the impact, rather than create further problems for half-abillion people. “If there is no agreement, and no visa exemption for the UK, the British Government may adopt a similar approach, and that would be a disaster.”

San Miguel Police have huge hearts!

SAN Miguel’s Local Police are beginning to incorporate defibrillators in their new patrol police cars, as part of a heartprotection scheme for the municipality.

Right now, they have just one vehicle equipped with the defibrillators. But officials are making investment plans, by including the life-saving equipment in three more vehicles, later this year. They will then add these specially-equipped cars to their fleet of 11 patrol vehi-

cles and four motorbikes. In 2016, San Miguel Council converted the area into a heart-protection municipality. It was one of the first boroughs to install these lifesaving devices in publiclyused places, such as sports, cultural and shopping centres, as well as around the touristic places of interest.

Diver’s tragedy, on St Valentine’s Day BRITISH tourist Andrew Littler died in a Tenerife diving tragedy in Abades on St Valentine’s Day, his wedding anniversary, after getting into trouble and suffering a heart attack.

The 53-year-old, from Coalville, Leicester, who had been “doing something he loved and enjoyed”, had been set to enjoy a Valentine’s meal with his wife that evening. Locals made desperate attempts to revive him, but, sadly, their efforts proved unsuccessful and he was declared dead at the scene. Andrew, believed to have worked as a transporter driver, was also a wellknown DJ in his home town. Heartbroken pals are now raising money to help repatriate his body, while the tragedy remains under investigation by a local court. His wife, Lesley, is understood to still be in Tenerife, and a GoFundMe appeal has been launched to help her get him home. Close friend David Granger,

also from Coalville, said: “It is with great sadness that Andrew, who ran the Black Night disco around the area for many years, has passed away while on holiday. “He was celebrating his wedding anniversary in Tenerife with his wife of 32 years, and will be greatly missed.” His pal added: “Andrew was a true friend of mine for more than 30 years, and has helped me a fair few times. He will be sadly missed.”

Tourist dad out of coma, but his memory’s gone!

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy died after being taken to Candelaria Hospital in a critical condition, having fallen several metres from an electricity pylon in the Guargacho area.

Emergency services were called last Saturday afternoon, after reports that he had received a shock and was unconscious. Paramedics found him in cardiac arrest, with severe head injuries. After resuscitating him successfully, and then stabilising him, they transferred the youngster to hospital. But, sadly, emergency treatment could not save him.

Medics unable to save woman

A WOMAN died on Tuesday morning after jumping from a balcony in an apartment block (above) in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz.

The incident happened just before 10am from a building located at the Plaza Weyler. Ambulances attended the scene almost immediately, and medics began to resuscitate the woman. But her injuries were too severe, and, tragically, the ambulance team were left to pronounce her dead. Police are speaking with family and friends of the victim, to determine the sequence of events.

Another ‘debt-settling’ blaze?

A HUGE fire erupted at another Marbella beach club on Tuesday, according to online news provider Marbella24horas.

Bounty Beach, located on El Cable beach, was razed to the ground, following the torching of nearby Playa Padre Beach, in what investigators believe was “a settling of accounts”.

Happier days for Robert and partner Alison Higgins

A FATHER on holiday in Puerto de la Cruz, who was left in a coma for 12 days, after a bad fall, was fighting for his life after being discovered with a severely-fractured skull.

The South Shields family of Robert Waugh, 48, were told that he had fallen some 15ft on to concrete, while on holiday. His son, Michael, said: “He was found in the harbour at the bottom of a drop, on some concrete. The police think it’s an accident, but when my dad first came out of his coma, he told us he’d been hit from behind. “But he’s not always making sense, so we don’t know what to believe.” The family faced a turbulent 48 hours after they were told

that Robert’s travel insurance wouldn’t pay out, as there was alcohol in his system. But they have since been told that the tourist’s medical bills will be covered through his European Health Insurance Card. Michael has now launched a fund-raiser to help bring his father home. The dad-of-three fractured his skull in three places, broke both eye sockets and suffered a bleed on the brain, which needed urgent surgery. Now, his family are doing their best to bring him home, but he’s not well enough to fly without a doctor. Michael set up a Go Fund Me page after friends and family said they wanted to help get the selfemployed painter-anddecorator back. Michael, 27, was told of the accident by his grandfather, also Robert, in an early-

morning call on 18th January. By 4pm that day, they were on a plane to Tenerife. Michael said: “It was heartbreaking, sitting on the plane and not knowing whether he’d still be alive when we got there.” Almost a month on from the fall, Robert is recovering well, but he still has short-term memory loss and doesn’t realise he’s in hospital in Tenerife, or that his mother has passed away. “He had a bad bleed on the brain, and he’s saying things that don’t make sense,” said Michael. Robert was enjoying his first holiday abroad in 10 years, with partner Alison Higgins, and now the family are doing all they can to bring him home. “If he can’t fly without a doctor, we need to try to fund that, or wait until he can fly home without one,” added Michael.

Prisoners’ families armed with drugs! SIXTEEN family members of prison inmates have been arrested and charged with smuggling drugs into the Las Palmas 2 penitentiary centre, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, on Gran Canaria.

A TEENAGER, aged 17, was in a critical condition after falling into Gran Canaria’s Azuaje barranco while riding his motorbike last Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened at around 2.30pm on the GC-350 in the Firgas y Moya municipality, and it was reported that the youngster had crashed into a concrete

barrier wall, before toppling over. The Guardia Civil, two ambulances., as well as the Local Police and the Moya municipality’s civil protection, answered the emergency call, together with emergency helicopters and firefighters, to assist in the teenager’s rescue. The helicopter positioned itself, with the help of the fire-fighters, then proceeded to move the injured boy

by hoisting him into the helicopter, before taking him to the helipad at the Doctor Negrín hospital, in Las Palmas. Hospital staff were on standby, awaiting the young man’s arrival, and their initial observation was that he had suffered severe bruising and was in a critical condition. He was swiftly transferred into the hospital emergency department for further treatment.

Officers save dog from suffocating

Eleven are woman, together with five men, and seven of the group already have a police record. They were all collared after the National Police conducted several, intensive, security searches last year.

Each person was searched, thoroughly, as he/she entered the premises for a conjugal visit with a prisoner, involved in a long-term sentence. During their searches, the cops found a total of 770gms of hashish, 45gms of heroin and 4gms of cocaine, as well as 108 psychotropic pills, which are capable of affecting the mind, emotions and behaviour The end result was that from 197 visitors searched, 16 intended to smuggle the drugs into the prison, which is why they have been arrested and charged.

Hooded robber resorted to violence… for under €200! A MAN aged 34, without a police record, was arrested and charged with violent robberies at two retail shops in La Laguna.

A police statement pointed out that the thefts were committed by a hooded man, wearing black clothing and sunglasses. And when he entered the premises, he threatened staff by waving a sharp object, while demanding they hand over

GUARDIA Civil officers rescued a dog, in danger of suffocating, from a parked vehicle in San Isidro last week, with the sun blazing down. The officers, on motorbikes, noticed the animal inside the vehicle as they rode past, and when they took a close look, they saw that the dog was distressed. They also realised that the windows of the vehicle were up, except for a small space, which was, presumably, to ventilate the car The officers calculated the heat inside the vehicle, concluding that the inside temperature must have reached more than 30 degrees, so they attempted to locate the driver. A man then approached the officers and told them

the cash. He got away with 180 euros at his first attempt, but the second theft didn’t go as smoothly. Again, he demanded the cash from a staff member, who said there was none. She offered her mobile phone to the thief, and he grabbed it, then stabbed her before running off. However, thanks to accurate descriptions given by witnesses, he was soon found and identified, enabling police to step in and press charges of two robberies with violence.

he lived nearby. When questioned, he told the officers that the dog had been living in the car for the past few weeks because there was nowhere else for it to go. The dog had already been locked inside for two hours before the officers noticed it. But they advised the man to take the dog to the vet for a total check-up, to confirm that the animal hadn’t suffered from the consequences of being locked up inside the car. The officers also charged the man for being irresponsible, as well as not respecting the animal-protection laws. They then issued him with a fine because the animal was not in a correct and safe environment, and he had failed to have it inoculated against rabies.

Customs officers bring shame to Guardia Civil

FIVE Guardia Civil Customs Officers have been imprisoned for smuggling tobacco through Gibraltar last Saturday.

On Monday, La Linea’s Court Number Four ordered that the accused, who are also

linked to drug-trafficking, be refused bail. The five so-called law-enforcers face additional charges of forgery, bribery, moneylaundering, membership of a criminal group and failure to prosecute crimes. The jailing of these Guardia Civil agents marks the second arrests within the Spanish

institution in under a month. Court sources said the case would be kept secret, because the Internal Affairs Service of the Armed Institute have begun an investigation. All five officers worked as customs officials on Spain’s border with The Rock, where they are accused of participating in, or

facilitating, the tobaccosmuggling. In Andalucia, one of every three cigarettes smoked is said to be illegal, while Gibraltar contributes 38.4% of the region’s black-market tobacco. A sixth person, unconnected with the Guardia Civil, has also been detained.

National Police responded rapidly to a call-out, and the man was arrested and charged with robbery, along with breaking and entering. The nurse became suspicious

when she saw the man snooping around a closed-off area, manipulating different objects while trying not to be noticed, and wearing a hooded jumper to try to hide his face. Alert police took the individual by surprise as he tried to leave the hospital, via the emergency fire escape,

and he was halted in his tracks. He was soon identified, and the officers, who conducted a body search, found electrical items stolen from a locked room into which he had forced his way. The cops proceeded to charge him, and he is now awaiting a court hearing.

Stupid robber tried to use stolen credit card

NATIONAL Police have detained a 32-year-old man, charging him with committing a violent robbery in La Laguna’s San Cristobal.

The thief, who already has a string of offences against his name, actually made the officers’ job easier because he went to a local shop centre, and tried to use a credit card he’d stolen earlier. The robbery happened late at night, while the victim was entering his home. He says in his police report that he was taken by surprise, when the thief startled him from behind with a fierce attack. He lost his balance and the assailant snatched his personal belongings, along with his wallet, before fleeing. The victim’s daughter also made a police report, saying her father was in a state of shock. The National Police were informed almost immediately about the attack, and, shortly afterwards, there were several reports of credit-card transactions being made at the nearby shopping centre. The cops were able to match up reports of the card’s irregular movements to the victim’s stolen card, And, thanks to the physical description of the attacker, police were able to track him down at the neighbouring town of La Cuesta Piedra. While there, however, the suspect was informed of the police presence, and attempted to run off and hide. Fortunately, the officers outsmarted the thief, who was arrested and charged. The police also searched him and were able to recover the wallet, along with other personal items which had been stolen. Happily, they were all returned to the victim.

Woman’s DNA belonged to murdered wife Romina

News

Vodafone offline and in the dark! VODAFONE has gone down across the whole of Spain, leaving customers offline, according to IT technicians in the operator’s customerservice department.

LANZAROTE’S forensic department has told the Main Courts that the DNA, taken from a piece of lung, which was found in a bag, off the coastline of Arrecife, is that of murdered wife Romina Nunez.

Her mother landed on Lanzarote from Paraguay last week, specifically to help with the murder enquiries. DNA was taken from her, specifically, to use as a match if any other evidence, on which DNA could be extracted, was ever found. Romina’s husband, Raúl DC, has been detained, provisionally, since 16th January on charges of murder and habitual domestic abuse. But, so far, he still insists that he did not kill his wife, and that he found her dead after returning home on New Year’s Eve. He told police he was scared, and not in the right frame of mind, because he had consumed several drugs that evening, when he got rid of her body by disposing it across different parts of the Lanzarote coast.

The announcement came at 11.40am on Tuesday, and the problem was expected to last all day and, probably, the next day as well. Yet the company said it was working hard, trying to fix it. “We’d be lying if we said we knew what the cause of the issue was, because it was reported to us this morning,” was the frank response from Vodafone when asked. “It doesn’t seem to be affecting all customers the same. Some have no internet at all, but others say they do have it, although it’s very

slow, and the connection is poor.” Landline telephones operated by Vodafone are also causing problems, although mobile-phone coverage is not thought to be affected. The network fault relates to ADSL home internet and WiFi, on phones and computers, and to landline calls. But mobile-users are still able to

phone and text. “Until we know what the cause of the problem is, we can’t give an estimated time for repair,” said a company spokesperson. “The service has been down all night, but we’re working on it.” Vodafone customer-service lines have been jammed with callers, since around 1am on mainland Spain (midnight

in the Canaries), with an average wait of 30 minutes on hold before getting through. Staff recommend reporting the incident, via the Vodafone App, or via text message instead. Complaints have already flooded Twitter, with the company’s address, @vodafone_es being tagged in hundreds of furious posts. Some say it is “suspicious” that the service breakdown coincides with a major meeting of Vodafone workers, which was scheduled for Wednesday, to negotiate conditions of a planned, mass redundancy, which is expected to affect up to 1,200 employees in Spain, or 23.5% of the payroll. But Vodafone denies any connection between the two. As we went to press last night (Thursday), there was no update from the company.

Obsession with tattoos all down to footballers SPAIN is now, officially, a tattoo-loving country, acknowledged as being sixth in the world for people sporting body art, with Italy in the lead. And it’s all down to elite footballers, and their fascination with tattoos, according to a report published by Dali, the multinational market consultancy. The company has compiled a global ranking of the countries where tattooing is

most popular. It is based on a survey of 9,054 people, via the internet in 18 countries, and Italy topped the table. A Dali spokesperson said: “If you look at the men in Italian football teams, who played in the last stages of the European Champions League, it is not surprising.” They also mentioned former Sevilla player Diego Perotti, who is now at AS Roma. He sports a large tattoo on his neck, as well as his arms. And Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos is also a huge lover of the skin coverings.

Brexit transition should be as simple as possible for expats here in Spain

REPRESENTATIVES of EuroCitizens met civil servants from the Foreign Ministry, the Interior Ministry and other Government ministers on Wednesday to discuss Brexit, and a probable outcome for all expats over here.

A spokesperson for EuroCitizens, Michael Harris, said: “A law (decreto ley) with full details, to enable measures to be put into place in the event of a hard Brexit, will not be passed until the beginning of March. “However, we received clarification about key points of the Spanish Government’s no-deal plans for British residents in Spain. “The Government aims to make our transition from EU citizens to third-country nationals as simple as possible, though everything will be conditional on reciprocity, and the UK Government’s treatment of Spanish citizens in their country.” 1. A generous “period of grace” Sufficient time will be given, in the event of a hard Brexit, for UK residents to register as third-country nationals. The length of this “transition” period is not definite yet, but it will be sufficient, and will also depend on the effective date on which the UK leaves the EU. 2. How to register as a thirdcountry national Information for registered Britons: After 29th March, 2019, your existing EU document (your registration certificate or residence card as a family member of an EU citizen) will continue to be valid until the end of the period of grace, even though you are no longer an EU citizen. During this period, you will have to apply for new third-country ID, a Tarjeta de Identificación de Extranjeros (TIE). The procedure for granting this new status will be “practically automatic” for legally-resident UK citizens. Both the long transition period and the simplified nature of the process are similar to the

contingency measures of the other 27 EU countries, which is promising. But, said the spokesperson for EuroCitizens: “We will need to see all the details: the application form, the cost, help provided for vulnerable groups, etc. “Our interlocutors at the ministries also promised that extra resources would be dedicated to immigration staff (at oficinas de extranjería and comisarias) in provinces with large British populations.” Information for non-registered Britons resident before Brexit: If you and all your family members are not yet registered, for example, if you have recently arrived, you should apply at a foreigner’s office (oficina de extranjería) or police station (comisaría) immediately for an EU citizen’s resident document. If you have been unable to submit your application formally, or have not been given an appointment before the withdrawal date, there will be a specific process for applying for the new thirdcountry ID during the period of grace, as long as you can prove that you were residing in Spain before 29th March. So, to sum up: if you apply for your EU citizen’s resident document before 29th March (or the effective date on which the UK leaves the EU), your application will be considered under the same conditions as current legal UK residents. If you are resident but have been unable to apply, formally, for an EU citizen’s resident document before

29th March you must apply, directly, for the new thirdcountry ID during the period of grace. However, the requirements stipulated by the new law, (that enables no-deal Brexit measures in Spain), will be similar to those for an EU citizen. Britons arriving in Spain after Brexit day: Applications for people arriving after 29th March will be processed in the same way as those for all other thirdcountry nationals, with the corresponding requirements, which are considerably more demanding than those for EU citizens, especially for nonworking people. It is also important to point out that, if the UK leaves the EU with no agreement, British citizens not registered as residents will, like all other third-country nationals, be allowed to spend just 90 days in any one six-month period, and their exit and entry will be controlled at ports and airports to enforce this. 3. New documentation Your new biometric ID card (TIE) will be valid throughout Spain, and for travel within the EU-27, along with a passport. The document will accredit your status as legally-resident, third-country nationals (under the régimen general de extranjeros as opposed to our current situation under the régimen de ciudadanos de la UE). If you have more than five years of legal residence, you will be able to get long-term residence (residencia de larga duración). And if you have under five

years legal residence, you will be able to apply, under the same conditions, for longterm residence after Brexit, once you have completed five years residence. 4. Working after Brexit If you are employed (por cuenta ajena) or selfemployed (por cuenta propia), you will be able to continue working as now. If you have exercised a profession using UK qualifications before 29th March, you will be able to continue to do so. If you are a Spanish civil servant (funcionario) with British nationality, you will be able to continue your employment, even though you are no longer an EU citizen. 5. Social security coordination On 30th March, automatic co-ordination of Social

Security between the UK and the EU will end. Thus, there will have to be a new bilateral agreement covering this area between Spain and the UK, or between the EU and the UK. This would enable existing Social Security rights and aggregated pensions to be recognised for Spaniards in the UK, as well as Britons in Spain. 6. Healthcare The existing S1 scheme and EHIC card will also stop, automatically, in the event of a hard Brexit. A new agreement between Spain and the UK will have to be reached, reflecting the true cost of the healthcare for around 77,000 British UK pensioners in Spain, compared with the mere hundreds of Spanish pensioners in Britain (to maintain access to public health for UK nationals as now).

THE Spanish Government is determined to go ahead with its planned reform of schools, despite having called a General Election for 28th April, which is more than 18 months earlier than scheduled.

Even with this year’s budget plans being voted down by right-wing opposition, a motion to reverse the funding cuts in education, introduced in 2012, was passed, narrowly, last November. It means that mean class sizes will be reduced, with supply teachers being brought in immediately to cover shortages and sick leave, without the usual 10day wait. Although it will be Spain’s eighth education law in 49 years, Education Minister Isabel Celaá insists that the country’s schooling system is one of the most stable in the world, and, although parts of it have been tweaked to adapt to changing values and realities, the bare bones have remained unaltered. And many of the more controversial aspects of the 2013 education law, introduced by the then rightwing PP Government, will be axed. They were unpopular with teachers, pupils and parents,

Reformation of schools means that classroom numbers will go down

and considered counterproductive by professionals in the education industry. Among the changes, coofficial, regional languages will not be pushed aside in favour of Castilian Spanish, but will coexist with the national tongue. The majority who opposed them claimed it placed too much focus on learning by rote, with pupils’ work and educational development judged almost entirely on exam grades, heavily academic and textbookbased at the cost of social and life skills and critical

thinking. Religious education, under the old law, was not made compulsory, but an alternative subject was required for those who did not choose to study it. For those who did, their marks counted towards their final school-leaving exam grade. This will be reversed: marks gained in RE will not affect the average overall grade for either the ESO (Spain’s answer to GCSEs) or the Bachillerato (the national equivalent to A-Levels), and no alternative subject will be compulsory.

And RE will be taught to those who wish to continue with it. These include Muslims, as well as Catholic children. The subject known as “Education in Civic and Ethical Values”, criticised when replacing the former Education for Citizenship for being too right-wing, will focus on knowledge of, and respect for, human rights, children’s rights, and equality between men and women. It will also focus more on teaching pupils about relationships, consent and equality, aiming to eradicate domestic and gender violence. Also included will be homosexuality, bisexuality and different family models, all of which are compulsory, and parents cannot “opt out”, regardless. “Evaluation” tests, on top of end-of-year exams, known as reválidas, brought in by the 2013 law and considered an unnecessary, extra stress for

pupils, will be axed. Instead, an overall evaluation will be made of students’ basic competencies across the board, every two years, purely as an advisory and information-based exercise. Also, school places in chosen centres have long caused headaches for families. Now, though, where there is a shortage, priority will be given to one-parent families, victims of domestic or gender violence or of terrorism, among other “vulnerability” considerations. Reversal of funding cuts also means more teachers will be taken on, their methods expected to focus more on pupil competencies than on memorising textbook content. And the majority of teaching positions will be permanent roles rather than the current “floating”, poststudent teachers, building up experience for their curriculum.

Wanted Brit is living in the Benidorm area

13 CW

‘Even the cops enjoy free drugs in docks’

Cocaine is often smuggled in from Colombia, inside bananas

A COLOMBIAN cocaine trafficker from Malaga has told TV channel Telecinco that corrupt police officers, security or dock-workers keep “between 25% and 30%” of the drug, which is smuggled through Spanish ports.

Firearms seized from the Cullen gang

LEON Cullen, a wanted Brit from Liverpool, who is alleged to belong to a notorious guns-anddrugs gang, has been spotted in Benidorm.

He is wanted by police for conspiracy to supply firearms, as well as conspiracy to supply cocaine. People who know Cullen told the Liverpool Echo he was hiding out among the Benidorm expats. And a man from Warrington said: “He was seen in the Benidorm area just before Christmas, driving a big Audi.” Cullen has been wanted since police smashed a Warrington -based drug-and-guns gang, led by his brother, Anthony. The Cullen gang were heavily armed, with access to a fullyworking AK47 assault rifle, a pump-action shotgun and handguns. Liverpool Crown Court heard that the brothers used fear to rule the streets of their hometown. They also ran a drug business, on a scale that competed with powerful gangs from Liverpool and Manchester. The gang used a “front” business, Future Press Ltd, to launder cash from their illicit trade, and they had a clear hierarchy and wage structure. Crimestoppers say Cullen has links across the North West, adding: “He is white, about 5ft 8in tall with a slim build. Officers also describe him as having short, light-brown

hair, a tanned complexion and prominent white teeth. He also has two distinctive tattoos.” Crimestoppers is now offering a reward of up to £5,000 for information about Cullen’s whereabouts. Garry Murray, the charity’s North West Regional Manager, said: “Leon Cullen is urgently wanted for questioning, and we are appealing to people, who might know where he is, to contact

us, with the promise that they will remain completely anonymous. “If you have any information on the whereabouts of Leon Cullen, then Crimestoppers’ charity wants to hear from you.” Murray added: “Call our UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111, or use our anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org “Your information could help keep someone safe from harm.”

The narco-trafficker, whose face was obscured to protect his identity, said the corrupt officials had no need to visit nightclubs to sell the drugs. Instead, they took this pre-planned short-cut as payment for getting the gear through high-tech scanners. “If it weren’t for these corrupt functionaries, we wouldn’t get any drugs in,” he said on television He added that a kilo of cocaine could fetch up to €4,000, once through port security. “So, if you’re sending 100 kilos, that’s some money. If you send 1,000 kilos, it’s millions, and that’s what keeps them sweet!” The drug-smuggler said he had been in the illicit drug trade for 30 years, after jumping ship from the financial world, which “didn’t especially excite me”. But he admitted that times had changed, dramatically, in recent years. “It’s a jungle of savages now,” he told Telecinco. “If you lose sight for a moment, they’ll rob you. “In the past, the difficulty was in collecting the merchandise and making money from it. “Now, the difficulty is that the merchandise arrives without being stolen en route; or that the buyers don’t just rob you of your merchandise; or that you get paid… and then they steal the money back.” He said that the days of living by unwritten rules was over, and that no one respected anyone. Despite the inherent risks of his occupation, however, and despite spending 11 years in prison, as well as paying “a lot of money” so that he remains unknown in the press, the Colombian trafficker confirmed that he would probably see out his working life in the black-market cocaine trade. “I know how to win, and I know how to lose,” he said.

PM Sánchez demands new General Election to clear way forward

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, as predicted last week, has called a snap General Election for 28th April.

The decision was triggered by last week’s defeat of his Socialist Party’s budget plan in Congress, and it means that Spaniards will be going to the polls for the third time in four years. Spaniards were not expected to be called to the polls again until 2020, and the decision rules out the possibility of a so-called “Super Sunday”, on 26th May, when local, regional and European elections will take place. In a speech that began at 10am, following a Cabinet meeting, Socialist Party (PSOE) leader Sánchez listed his government’s achievements in the last 8½ months, including job creation and initiatives on environmental and social issues. He also warned against making choices that could lead to greater confrontation in an increasingly polarised country. “Spain does not deserve to get stuck because of partisan interests,” said Sánchez. “Spain belongs to its citizens. It is they who must decide whether to take a step backward. We defend a country where there is room for everyone.” The decision to call a snap, national election was made after deputies in Congress last Wednesday rejected the Government’s spending plan for 2019. Sánchez had warned that failure to secure passage for the budget could lead to early elections, and, during two days of congressional debate on Monday and Tuesday, the government made one last attempt to convince other parties to back its plan. But it met with opposition from Catalan separatist parties, from the conservative Popular Party (PP) and from centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens). “This budget was good for Spaniards, and for each and every one of the territories in our country,” said Sánchez on

Friday, in a veiled reference to the increase in funds that had been earmarked for Catalonia. “We had to present our budget and we did so; unfortunately, it did not prosper. But let me say one thing: there are parliamentary defeats that are social victories. Citizens have seen what this Government wanted for this country.” The debate was further complicated because a highlyanticipated trial of Catalan separatist leaders opened at the Supreme Court that Tuesday. The pro-independence movement, which has cast the proceedings as a political trial, had demanded concessions in favour of the 12 defendants, in exchange for support on the budget issue. The new General Election will take place against the backdrop of increased political fragmentation. Recent opinion polls suggest the PSOE could win the most votes, but not enough for a majority. And its traditional rival, the

PP, could lose voters to an emerging force, the farright Vox, which for the first time secured parliamentary representation at the recent, regional elections in Andalusia, partly on a message of defending Spanish unity against Catalan separatism. Anti-austerity group Podemos and liberal Ciudadanos have also become key players in Spanish politics, since the economic crisis ended the country’s two-party dominance. Sánchez came to power in June 2018 after leading a successful no-confidence vote against former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy of the PP, in which separatist parties such as the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) and the Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) provided crucial support. But Sánchez now heads a minority Government, with just 84 law-makers in the 350seat house, and he needs support from these same parties to pass legislation. The ERC and PDeCAT had

threatened to withhold their support for the 2019 budget if the Government did not take more steps on the issue of Catalan independence, and the trial of separatist leaders. One of the defendants is ERC party leader Oriol Junqueras, who took the stand on Thursday. One of Sánchez’s promises when he took office was to improve relations with Catalonia, which had been damaged badly following Madrid’s decision to suspend regional self-rule for seven months, in the wake of the unilateral independence declaration. But talks became increasingly strained as separatist leaders insisted on keeping a new vote on self-determination on the agenda. Sánchez has always ruled out this possibility, as did his predecessor, on the grounds that such a poll was not allowed by the Spanish Constitution. Last Friday, Sánchez insisted in his address that he was open to talks, saying: “There is room for everything within the

Constitution, and for nothing outside of it.” The Government last week announced that it would include a third-party figure, described variously as a rapporteur or facilitator, at talks with Catalan parties, in a move viewed by the opposition as a concession to separatists’ calls for international mediation. Tens of thousands of people marched in Madrid on Sunday to protest the move, and to demand early elections, in a demonstration called by the PP, Ciudadanos and the farright Vox party. By then, however, the Government had already broken off talks with the Catalan authorities. “The debate now is whether we want a Spain that lives off nostalgia, for a past that will never arrive and which was not necessarily better,” said Sánchez last Friday. “The debate is about what kind of Spain we defend. It is evident that the right, with its three parties, defends a Spain in which there is not room for everyone.”

Pilot missing after helicopter crashes

THE Guardia Civil is searching for the pilot of a helicopter, which plunged into the Iznajar reservoir in Cordoba on Tuesday.

For reasons yet unknown, it crashed into the water at around 11.30am, although it might have collided with a power line near the 60-metre-deep reservoir. Emergency health services, firefighters from the Lucena and Puente Genil regional parks, as well as the Air Traffic Control Centre and the Co-ordination and Rescue Centre, and the Iznajar Local Police, were all called to the scene. Divers are believed to be working underwater to locate the damaged machine, and to determine how many people were inside when it crashed.

THE head of the United Nation’s terrorism body has visited Spain to discuss the importance of the role of attacked victims in society.

Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General of the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Office, spoke with Spanish

Foreign Minister Josep Borrell during his visit last week. It preceded the Global Counter-terrorism Forum, set to take place in Malaga City in March, and Voronkov also met with Fernando Valenzuela, Spanish Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, to discuss how to give even more protection to terrorattack victims. Spanish Government sources said the country was com-

mitted to continue fighting against terrorism, and to working towards world peace and stability. The sources added that Madrid would continue to contribute funds to the UN’s Counter-Terrorism Office. Spain has faced terror attacks from the Basque nationalist ETA group, and 14 people died in Barcelona after one took place there, in 2017.

Mum’s 10th-floor bid to kill her young girl Parasite shock for for fish customer A DISHEVELLED woman aged 20, from Morocco, was arrested in Malaga after attempting to throw her three-yearold daughter from a 10th-floor apartment window, in the early hours of the morning.

The frightening incident happened at 2.05am last Sunday in the Los Corazones

neighbourhood of the city, near the provincial police station. The unidentified mother was held on suspicion of attempted murder, as well as assaulting a police officer. Police, who arrived at the premises after neighbours reported hearing screams, were greeted by the mother, who was carrying her naked daughter. As police began interviewing the woman, she became agitated and tried to throw

the girl out of the window. The mother also tried to suffocate her daughter, but officers managed to free the toddler in time. Following her arrest, the woman was transferred to Malaga’s Civil Hospital for tests, while the daughter is being looked after by her grandmother. Police said the house was littered with faeces and rubbish, and they came across a dog, locked in a cage with its own faeces.

GIANT supermarket chain Mercadona has offered an online explanation, following a customer’s accusation that in one of its stores, he purchased a fish containing parasites. Jor Montejano posted an online video of him pulling a live “anisakis” parasite from his cooked hake. “There you have the little worm; how is he alive?” he queried. “It’s a good thing my daughter saw it before she ate it.”

The father added: “It almost gave us something, and it was in the oven.” A spokesperson for the supermarket claimed it was making all efforts to control and minimise the anisakis, adding: “It is not a problem for Mercadona fish; it is a challenge for the fishing sector, which is why the Spanish Food Safety Agency recommends cooking completely, or freezing it for at least five days.” Anisakis is usually found in raw fish, including haddock, cod, salmon and monkfish. And if the parasite is ingested by humans, it can cause vomiting, nausea and violent abdominal pain.

Tragic error costs hospital over €1m

Russian boat worth €7m dumped in Spanish port

THE parents of a girl, who suffered brain damage following a hospital error, have been awarded €1,236,000 by a Malaga court.

Their daughter, who suffers Down’s Syndrome, was 11 when admitted to Malaga’s Maternal and Child Hospital on 3rd February 2011, suffering from pneumonia and respiratory failure. After two days in the paediatric unit, the child was diagnosed with flu, and transferred to its intensive care ward, where she was fitted with a breathing tube until her respiratory problems improved. The family’s lawyer, Damian

Vazquez, claimed improper handling of the tube left her without oxygen for 18 minutes, causing brain damage. The girl also suffered a cardiac arrest during the incident.

The Malaga court judge, who made the award, said: “Before the dramatic error, the girl had a normal life, shortened in a way that was irreversible and painful.”

Ice-cream proved fatal for holiday girl, aged 9

A RUSSIAN freighter, worth €7m, remains in Motril Port, near Granada, after being abandoned by its owners when their company went bust last September. A small number of crew have remained on board, in Andalusia’s Costa Tropical, fearing they will lose their right to their wages, if they

Star signs let down leader of the gang!

A GANG of burglars, whose leader consulted the horoscope to choose the right days for robbing homes, did not predict their imminent arrest by police. A BRITISH girl, aged nine, died after suffering what coroners believe was a severe allergic reaction to ice-cream, while holidaying with her family on the Costa del Sol.

The girl was taken to hospital shortly after eating the ice-cream in Mijas last Friday. Her parents told staff at the cafe where they were eating, and they called in emergency services, according to

online news supplier Diario Sur. Initially, paramedics took the girl to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella, before transferring her to the Maternal and Children’s Hospital in Malaga City, as her health worsened. The girl’s condition then became critical and she died late on Monday afternoon, according to hospital sources. Coroners from Malaga City’s Institute of Legal Medicine performed a post-mortem on the girl’s body. Initial results from the tests showed the girl died of anaphylactic shock, a

severe allergic reaction which causes an extreme reaction from the body’s immune system. She is believed to have been allergic to milk and nuts in the ice cream. Symptoms include swelling of the throat and mouth, rashes, stomach pain and nausea, as well as vomiting, asthma, falling blood pressure and unconsciousness. Coroners at the Institute of Toxicology in Sevilla City will analyse the postmortem results to confirm the cause of death, while the courts have begun an investigation.

leave. The owners have, reportedly, failed to pay port fees for five months, allowing the marina to put it up for auction, as it can with any ship not paying up for more than three months. Money raised from the sale of the ship, along with its cargo of salt, valued at €600,000, will go towards paying port fees, crew and traders, while the rest is expected to go into the Spanish Government’s coffers.

The four-strong group specialised in burgling bars, with their contortionist leader using his skills to gain entry through narrow spaces. Despite making full use of the signs of the Zodiac, and living in a hut in the middle of a forest, the 55-year-old Romanian gang-leader couldn’t hide from the Catalan Mossod’Esquadra police force. The Catalan cops tracked him down to the Barcelona municipality of Sentmenat, where they arrested him, along with two Spaniards, aged 46 and 26, as well as a 24-year-old Venezuelan. They are suspected of 20 burglaries, 15 in Barcelona. An investigation began last

October, after a Barcelona burglary, when investigators realised that the method used by the perpetrators matched several other incidents. The gang selected bars which could be entered by making holes from an adjacent stairway, without being discovered by neighbours. The leader then used his contortionist skills to squeeze through the small openings made. The gang members would first watch the premises, to find out the schedule and routes used by the owners and staff of the targeted bars. Before committing the burglary, the group leader consulted the horoscope to choose the best day to act. The group were arrested after the October burglary, when a getaway driver was apprehended. Police eventually tracked the leader to his hut, where they found a notebook detailing the results of other surveillance operations.

IN general, double tax treaties, signed between countries, are designed to determine the taxation rights of the different income and gains, when there is a conflict (i.e. when assets are located in one country and the individual is resident in another, or when someone is considered resident for tax purposes in two different countries, due to each country’s domestic rules).

UK nationals living in Spain need to understand how the Spain-UK double tax treaty works and affects them. It is important to know where your taxes are due. This article looks at some key provisions of the current double tax treaty signed between Spain and the UK (in force since 2014), which may affect UK nationals living, or owning assets, in Spain. Residence As a general rule, you can only be treated as tax resident in one country. However, it is possible to fulfil the domestic criteria of two countries, in

which case your tax residence status is determined by the double tax treaty. The treaty’s “tie-breaker” clause comes into operation if you are resident both in the UK, under UK rules, and in Spain, under theirs. This determines in which country you are regarded as resident, for the purpose of taxes covered by the agreement. There are different criteria such as your permanent home, centre of vital interest and habitual abode. If none determines your residence status, it comes down to nationality, or mutual agreement between both countries. If you are resident in Spain, it is your responsibility to declare yourself to the Spanish tax

authorities, and submit an income-tax return, each year. If not, you risk being subject to a tax investigation and paying penalties. Pensions Under this treaty, certain UK pensions are exempt from taxation in Spain. This concerns Government Service pensions (mainly fire, police and civil service, armed forces and local authority pensions, but not NHS). Note, however, that the amount of Government Service pension received must now be included in the calculation, which determines how much tax you owe in Spain. This is called “exemption with progression”. So, although this pension income is not taxed in Spain,

suffered with an interest that never goes down, which is a consequence of this Index, and is more expensive than Euribor. The IRPH is used by banks instead of the Euribor, to calculate the mortgage interests to be applied, and, consequently, the sum of every instalment. It is a variable, added to mortgage loans, and is a much higher rate than the Euribor (normally between 1.5% and 3% more), and its decreases are softer than the more stable Euribor. When the real-estate bubble burst, the Euribor went down drastically, while the IRPH increased, and many consumers could not meet the payment of their mortgage loan instalments. In accordance with Bank of Spain Order 8/1990, the IRPH entity is defined as the

average of the interest rates applied by the banks, on mortgage-loan operations, with a term equal to, or greater than, three years for the acquisition of housing. The IRPH entities index is one of the official indexes nowadays. The IRPH Cajas index finally disappeared in 2013, as it was no longer published in the list of Bank of Spain indexes. The claims requesting the nullity of the clauses that incorporate this IRPH index, usually state the lack of sufficient information provided by the bank about its operation, and lack of real understanding on the part of the client. Those affected by this clause have gone to the courts in their masses, as in the cases of ground clause, to request its nullity and its replacement by the Euribor, claiming the refund of sums unduly paid.

this effectively means that your other income, which is directly taxable in Spain (e.g. other pension and rental income), may be pushed into higher rates of tax, often resulting in larger tax bills. Other pension income such as UK state pension and occupational pensions are taxable only in Spain, provided you are resident in Spain. The UK will continue to deduct tax at source from UK pension income (except for UK state retirement pension, which is always paid gross), until they are satisfied you are both resident and paying tax on this income in Spain. Capital-gains tax on sale of shares Previously, Spain had no taxing

rights on gains realised by UK residents on the sale of shares in any Spanish company. However, the current treaty reinstated Spanish taxing rights on any company whose asset base comprises of at least 50% of Spanish property. Where Spanish property is owned via a company, Spain is granted taxing rights on any sale of shares connected with the ownership of the property (along with the UK if held by a UK company). Cross-border tax planning can be complex, with various potential pitfalls. Is mortgage IRPH abusive? There are numerous sentences that have been pronounced, for and against, concerning the nullity of the clause. The matter reached the Supreme Court, which, in December 2017, ruled in favour of the bank. According to the Supreme Court, the clause is clear and understandable, and the consumer cannot say he or she was unaware of its economic and legal importance. However, with this legal ruling, the controversy did not end, much less the controversy, and an example of this is the Barcelona Court, asking the European Court of Justice for a preliminary ruling. True, most High Courts follow this jurisprudence about the validity of the clause, after the Supreme Court judgement, revoking the favourable judgements of the First Instance Courts.

Therefore, the European Union’s Court of Justice will be able to establish a clear criterion with its ruling, and many legal cases are now suspended until its decision. The European Commission reported that the IRPH was abusive. And if the European Court follows this opinion, the IRPH could be considered null and void, and the banks would be involved in a situation even worse than in the case of “floor clauses” (clausula suelo), having being compelled to repay up to 7,600 million euros. The European Court is expected to make a decision on Monday (25th February). * Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Monday 25th February, ITV1, 21.00 “I was straight out of the womb and put into a pillowcase and left on the doorstep…where is my history? Where did I come from? Being a foundling, I’ve got nothing” Alley Lofthouse “Somewhere in this vicinity, my birth mother felt she had no choice but to abandon me.” Jamie Duffy Foundlings are people who were abandoned as babies, often in the first hours and days of their lives. Born without a trace, they have had no way to unlock the secrets of their past. But this ground-breaking new 90-minute documentary combines new DNA technology with painstaking detective work, to finally help solve the mysteries of people with unknown beginnings who are desperate for answers. Presented by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, the team behind Long Lost Family use an extraordinary new technique to try and identify birth families and find answers for people who have spent decades trying to find out where they came from. This special programme features a man who was found as a newborn in a hospital car park, a woman left at five days old in a cardboard box in Manchester and a woman abandoned on a doorstep in Scotland. All three are desperate to piece together their pasts and find answers, with astonishing and at times, heart-breaking, results. One of the most famous foundling cases to hit the headlines was Jamie Duffy. Thirty years ago, newborn Jamie was wrapped in a towel, placed in a carrier bag and left in the grounds of a hospital in Portsmouth. Appeals to find his mother at the time led to a woman calling a police hotline in tears, to say that she couldn’t look after him. A copy of the recording is all that Jamie has from the person he believes to be his mum. Two months after being found, Jamie was adopted and at 14, his parents told him the truth about his start in life. But his birth mother was never found. Jamie says: “I recall having a conversation with my mum and it got a bit emotional because I just couldn’t grasp as to why someone would abandon a child at such a young age…Having been abandoned you feel that you’re not wanted, unloved, sort of discarded. There must be very strong circumstances to leave me. I want to know why it happened.” Jamie does a DNA test, with a new glimmer of hope of finding his blood relatives. In the meantime, Nicky contacts him as the team have successfully traced one of the girls who found him in the grounds of the hospital and is desperate to meet him. Marie was just 11 years old when she found Jamie as a baby and they have a very emotional reunion. Marie takes Jamie back to the hospital to show him the exact spot where she found him. Marie says: “We’d been out playing and it was on our way back home, we heard a small noise and the bag was moving. We thought it was kittens and pulled the front part of the carrier bag back and you were just looking up at us.” Meanwhile, Jamie’s DNA is analysed by online DNA databases, which compare his DNA with millions of others who have already tested and can come up with matches with people who are biologically related. Leading DNA detective Julia Bell and renowned specialist in tracing missing family, Ariel Bruce, work together to try and identify his family members. Incredibly, they find a match for a close relative and are then able to investigate how they were related.

Matt LeBlanc and Chris Harris take a road trip across Sri Lanka in a pair of tiny tuktuks.. Back at the track, Chris tests out the latest super-saloons from BMW and Mercedes, while Professor Green sets a lap in the Reasonably Fast Car. Versa-tuk-tuk-tility What’s the most versatile vehicle on the planet? According to Matt LeBlanc, it’s the good ol’ pick-up truck, the American icon that’ll do the school run, help you move house, and do a spot of loggin’ and huntin’ for good measure. But according to Chris Harris, the most versatile car in the world is something rather tinier. Specifically it’s the humble tuk-tuk, the three-wheeled motorised rickshaw that ferries much of Asia about its daily life. And to prove to our sceptical American just how very multi-faceted the tiny tuk-tuk is, Chris volunteered to take Matt on a road trip across its natural habitat: Sri Lanka. And what better way to demonstrate versatility than with a race across a tea plantation? And a polo match? And an ascent of Sri Lanka’s most notorious mountain track? And crossing a medium-sized ocean? Better than the train The government has a plan to speed up business in Britain. It’s called HS2, a highspeed train line between London and the North, and is expected to cost about 56 billion pounds. Chris Harris has a much cheaper plan to speed up business in Britain. Two plans, in fact: the new BMW M5 and the new Mercedes-AMG E63. A brace of ridiculously fast business saloons that’ll get you from London to Manchester quicker than the Government’s shiny new train. Assuming you’re allowed to break a few speed limits along the way, which we’re pretty sure they’ll be fine about. But which of these two German super-saloons is the ultimate answer to Britain’s business woes? To find out, Chris proposed a little race. Him in the Mercedes, with the BMW to be driven by… Business Stig.

Starting his Bajan adventure, Ainsley goes in search of some elusive Green Monkeys in a Welchman Gully, famed for its lush vegetation and being the place where Grapefruits were first discovered. Moving down to the south of the island, Ainsley visits Chef Damian Leach, at his restaurant Cocktail Kitchen. Finishing off his trip with a Barbados cocktail – Corn n Oil – made with Rum and Falernum - a spiced sweet syrup.

The Martin Lewis Money Show

The Satanic Verses: 30 Years On

The nation's favourite money guru Martin Lewis has been talking about PPI for over a decade. So far an astonishing 15 billion pounds has been reclaimed. With the final deadline set for this August, Martin, wants to make sure no-one is left behind and missing out on their entitlement to mis-sold PPI. Plus, what are the pros and cons of the workplace autoenrollment pension scheme?

The publication of Salman Rushdie’s novel The Satanic Verses in 1988 sparked a culture war in Britain between those in the Muslim community who considered the book blasphemous and called for the book to be banned, and those defending it as an expression of freedom of speech. Protests, which began in the north of England, soon spread across the UK and to the rest of the Islamic world, culminating in February 1989 with Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini issuing a fatwa - a death sentence on the writer. Now, 30 years on, broadcaster and journalist Mobeen Azhar embarks on a journey, starting in his native Yorkshire where the protest first began, to examine the lasting effect the book has had on the Muslim community and how the events of 1989 continue to have an impact today. Mobeen hears from a range of people who were affected by the so called ‘Rushdie Affair’ - from the men who took an early stand against the book and organised the original protests, to the writer who wrestled at the time of the book’s publication with the complex questions of free speech and her own religious beliefs; and a former member of the National Front who claims that the furore over the book became a recruiting tool for them.

Martin Clunes Islands of America Tuesday 26th February, ITV1, 21.00

Martin arrives in New York for the final leg of his journey to explore Manhattan Island, and its world famous Empire State Building, and nearby Ellis Island. With special access to the very top of the Empire State Building, Martin is able to see the city’s 500 miles of coastline and more than 40 islands. “From up here you can clearly see how New York has been shaped by the water,” Martin says. But with no head for heights, and being 1000 feet up with only a handrail at hip height he found the experience “frankly terrifying”. Safely back on the ground Martin takes the ferry to Ellis Island to where one in three Americans can trace their roots. The island opened in 1892 as an immigration centre for those arriving in the US by sea. Park ranger and guide Doug Treem takes Martin into the Grand Hall on the island where the fate of millions of families was decided. He sets a mental agility test for Martin as the immigrants would have had to do if their were any doubts about their suitability. More than nine out of ten immigrants passed the citizenship test to enable them to begin new lives in America. Among them were 62 people sharing the same surname as Martin. Coney Island, home to the world’s most iconic amusement park, is Martin’s next port of call. Since its opening in 1920 it has become a New York City landmark, and several of the rides have become stars in their own right. Martin is cajoled into trying some of the rides with his guide, Brooklyn born teacher Richard Rodriguez. When he was 19, in 1977, Richard got his name in the Guinness Book of Records for the world’s longest rollercoaster marathon - 104 hours, 2375 times, pausing only for bathroom breaks. Richard persuades a reluctant Martin to go on the vintage rollercoaster, the Cyclone. Travelling at speeds up to 60 miles an hour from dizzying heights is not something Martin wants to repeat, and he is only too relieved to be back on the boardwalk.

The Junk Food Experiment Wednesday 27th February, ITV1, 21.00

Britain is a nation hooked on fast food. We consume 22 million takeaway meals every week and fast food joints are dominating high streets across Britain. In this 90-minute programme, six famous faces have agreed to put their bodies on the line and become guinea pigs in an extreme scientific experiment to find out what our junk food lifestyle is actually doing to us. Singer Peter Andre, The Chase mastermind and barrister Shaun Wallace, politician Nadine Dorries, actress Hayley Tamaddon, Olympian Tessa Sanderson and TV personality Hugo Taylor have bravely given their bodies over to science to take part in an overfeeding study used by scientists to understand exactly how food can affect our bodies. For 21 days the celebs will be overeating burgers, fried chicken and pizza – Britain’s top three favourite junk foods – for lunch and dinner. The volunteers will each spend a week eating burgers, a week eating chicken and a week eating pizza and by subjecting them to a large increase in calories – 50% more than they need - over a short period of time, the effect on their bodies could mimic that of long term consumption. The extreme trial will take place under the watchful eye of renowned dietary expert Dr Michael Mosley and, because it’s a controlled experiment, the effects will be carefully monitored and measured. Every seven days, they will undergo a full-body MOT, comprising a suite of over 60 different medical tests designed by experts to reveal exactly what is happening to them. It is regularly reported that the UK’s consumption of junk food, high in fat, salt and sugar, is alarming – with some Brits admitting to eating it twice a day - and as 1000 new junk food outlets open every year, the celebrities will also spend time working in a chicken shop to see how the meals are prepared.

Endeavour ITV1, 20.00

www.canarianweekly.com 22nd February 2019 - 28th February 2019

The murder of renowned chocolate factory owner Greville Creswell during a local hunt leads Endeavour to the sleepy village of Chigton Green. The chocolate box cottages and idyllic surroundings might seem perfect, but not all is as it first appears. Meanwhile, when local couple Mandy-Jane and Rennett Bell are found dead from gunshot wounds, Thursday’s initial assumptions about a spurned husband and a doomed affair look likely. But the discovery of a Happy Family collectible card on one of the bodies - seemingly linking the deaths back to Creswell – appear to be a sign left by the killer. When Endeavour learns of a vicious campaign of gossip and rumour – which has utilised the same collectible cards - it seems likely that the two are connected. One of the targets – beautiful single mother Isla Fairford – captures Endeavour’s attention and gives him food for thought about the future.

Calum (Ryan Fletcher) is rushed to hospital after attempting suicide. He dies shortly afterwards. To Perez’s (Douglas Henshall) dismay, Sandy (Steven Robertson) admits to giving Calum the pen he used to kill himself. Convinced that Aaron McGuire (John Kazek) is the key to unlocking the murder cases and finding Zezi (Titana Muthui), Perez heads for the airport and a flight to Glasgow. On arrival in the city, Perez is met by DI Sam Boyd (Kate Dickie) from the trafficking unit. Together they talk to Claire McGuire (Jenni Keenan Green), Aaron’s ex wife, who runs an employment agency in the city centre. Claire says she hasn’t seen Aaron for years and appears shocked to learn of his potential involvement in human trafficking. Perez and Boyd follow Claire McGuire’s car to a rundown tenement building on the southside. There they find some trafficked men and some terrified African girls. One of them has the same distinctive butterfly tattoo that Perez saw on the barmaid at the Hillside Hotel. Further investigation reveals that a tattoo artist by the name of Andrea may be responsible for tattooing the trafficked workers - using the butterfly tattoos as a form of branding.

“It’s so difficult - you’re looking into a darkened car, it’s night-time conditions, you’ve got a little light on the end of your gun, and you’re searching the entire people in that car to make sure they’re all reacting as they should. And if they’re not, what are they doing? Are they hiding something, or are they reaching for a weapon to shoot you with it? And you’ve got to make that split-second decision.” - PC Clive, South Yorkshire Police armed officer Part of ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand, this new documentary fronted by Ross Kemp, goes inside tactical firearms teams and out on the beat with officers to investigate whether or not all police should be armed.

Property scammers are being demolished now THE alleged mastermind behind a €5m property scam in Mallorca has been arrested in Colombia, as have 11 suspected accomplices.

Trans boy, 15, wins right to change his name on DNI card A TRANSSEXUAL teenager has won the battle to have his name printed on his national ID card, after appealing a decision which claimed this was “not neutral enough”.

Gabriel Delgado Suárez, 15, from the Zaragoza province of Calatayud, was born a girl, but does not identify with his sex. He has considered himself male from his very earliest childhood, and has grown up as a transsexual male. He is having treatment to ensure he develops as a man, but he was not permitted to give himself a man’s name on his DNI card. Yet his SIP, or health service card, shows his name as Gabriel, which he has been called throughout his life. The Civil Registry denied him permission to change it, despite having permission from his mother, Pilar, which is still necessary for minors, saying Gabriel was not genderneutral, and was unequivocally masculine. “But that’s the whole point,” said a frustrated Gabriel, who identifies entirely as male and not as “genderneutral” or “non-binary”. The General Directorate of Registrars and Notaries has upheld Gabriel’s appeal, and, finally, issued his new ID card. “I’m happy now, and delighted,” the teenager told reporters. “I couldn’t wait for this whole situation to be over and done with.” Pilar said the General Directorate told the family last Thursday of its decision in their favour. “They’ve made a note in the margin of his birth registration file, and now he’s 100% Gabriel,”

she said, sounding, according to reporters who phoned her, every bit as happy as her son. Gabriel must still wait a few days, because the amended birth registration file has to be stamped by the General Directorate of the National Police in Madrid. “We thought we’d be leaving there with the new ID card, but they told us it won’t be ready until Wednesday,” said Pilar. That means they have nearly another week to go before Gabriel can use the DNI with his real name on it. The teen’s battle started when he finished his ESO, Spain’s answer to GCSEs, and was concerned his certificate would show the girl’s name he was given at birth. They visited the Civil Registry in Calatayud, but went away stunned at being denied the right to change Gabriel’s name. A petition on Change.org was launched, now standing at nearly 203,800 signatures. It was handed in to the General Directorate of Registrars and Notaries, in Madrid, in October, after more than 129,000 people had signed it. It was headed: “Why won’t they let me be who I am?” Days after the petition was received, the Justice Ministry published an announcement in the Official State Bulletin (BOE), ordering registrars to comply with the rights of transsexual persons, including minors, to change their name in accordance with the gender they identify with. It means, conclusively, that Gabriel’s ordeal should not happen again to any other trans persons, irrespective of age.

The Guardia Civil have confirmed that they have frozen 98 bank accounts, and taken control of 38 properties owned by the criminal organisation, involved in the fraudulent sale of nonexistent, off-plan homes. Carlos Garcia Roldan, and the other suspected members of the “firm”, are believed to have swindled more than 300 expatriates, offering 21 largescale promotions in Palma, Marratxi, Llucmajor and Santa Ponca. The houses were offered at lower prices, and buyers were asked to pay at least 10% in advance. Some victims paid as much as €200,000. A number of web pages and electronic mail domains are being investigated, while a staggering 350,000 bank movements have been recorded. The detainees are charged with alleged crimes of fraud, moneylaundering and forgery of documents, as well as appropriation of civil status and property. The Guardia Civil, working in

collaboration with the Colombian Police since last summer, said: “Officers verified the existence of a ‘complex business network’, which, taking advantage of misleading advertising and professional profiles to give an appearance of legality, was dedicated to gleaning deposits for the purchase of non-existent real estate.” As a result, Guardia officers arrested 10 people last August, including realestate entrepreneur Michele Pilato, who remains in custody. Overseas co-operation led investigators to Roldan, who had fled to Colombia, where he was believed to be staying with his girlfriend, and her mother’s partner. He is said to have had facial surgery, as well as losing a significant amount of weight, and has coloured his hair to change his appearance. But, with the help of Colombian Police and Interpol, the suspected ringleader was arrested in Bogota during a dawn raid on 5th February. Eleven further arrests were made this week, while two others are under investigation. The scam, the biggest in Mallorca’s history, began in 2015, and officers claim those involved “lived a life of luxury” at the expense of their victims.

News

THE family of dictator General Franco were given a two-week, Government deadline last weekend on where his remains should be placed, or they will decide on his behalf, says Justice Minister Dolores Delgado.

The fascist leader, whose 1975 death ended a near40-year reign, which started with the Civil War, is currently buried in the Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen). It is a huge memorial site, cemetery and tourist attraction, which houses the graves of those who perished in the late-1930s conflict, as well as victims of the dictatorship itself. The Spanish Government, with the full backing of the European Union, considers that the body of a dictator lying next to those of his own victims has no place in a 21stcentury democracy. Thus, it has passed a Royal Decree, or Bill of Law, allowing it to exhume Franco’s remains and move them to another graveyard. His surviving family, now in their third generation following the relativelyrecent death of his daughter Carmen, were asked to state where they wished the

Franco family given reburial ultimatum

body to be placed, but they opted to appeal against the transfer. This was unsuccessful, and they now have until next Friday (1st March) to inform the government of their choice of location. In the absence of a site, the State will decide, the following day, where to put

the dictator’s body. Once exhumed from the Valle de los Caídos (pictured), in the Greater Madrid region, the only place the Government will not allow Franco to be buried is in the Almudena Cathedral, for public-order reasons. Also, it would violate the Law of Historic Memory, passed

in 2007, as an instrument to right the wrongs of Franco’s regime, and previous cases of ethnic cleansing, These include the 14thcentury expulsion of the Sephardic Jews, whose ancestors in south-eastern Europe are now, automatically, eligible for joint Spanish nationality. The Government can even

over-rule the religious order which runs the basilica in the Valle de los Caídos. It means that if the Church objects to Franco being moved, the State can still proceed, because, it said: “Places of worship are not exempt from civil authority.” According to the National Francisco Franco Foundation (FNFF), run by the dictator’s family, a group which has since been outlawed by the European Union, the removal of the leader’s remains from their current site is “illegal”. Franco’s grandchildren say it should be up to them where he is buried, and that if the Government remains determined to exhume his body, it should be placed where the family owns a series of tombs, in the crypt of the Almudena Cathedral in Madrid. The FNFF says it will use all legal means within its power to fight the 15-day rule, and the ban on their descendant being laid to rest in the Valle de los Caídos or the Almudena.

Designer

Lagerfeld dies

LEGENDARY Chanel director Karl Lagerfeld, the Germanborn designer, artist and photographer, died on Tuesday in Paris at the age of 85.

He reinvented the luxury brand and transformed it, following his appointment in 1983, and also served as creative director of Italian label

Fendi, along with his own brand, Karl Lagerfeld. It is believed that he was admitted to the American Hospital in Paris the night before he died, following rumours of his ill-health for several weeks. The iconic designer was recognisable, instantly, by his white hair, usually tied back in a ponytail, as well as his love for black sunglasses, fingerless gloves and crisp white shirts.

The kids enjoy sport and music

THE beginning of February has certainly proved to be a busy period for the charity.

Following the marathon runner raising 1000€ to support swimming lessons for the children in Guaidyl in Granadilla, we have signed the contracts with the Council and the swimming pool/sports centre, and their lessons started this Wednesday. We also bought goggles and swim caps to ensure the children had everything they needed to comply with the pool requirements. On the same day, the children from El Valito in El Fraile started tennis lessons at the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy in Abama. Two coaches led the sessions, which the children thoroughly enjoyed, and they want to carry on learning. They enjoyed the fresh air and sunshine, and the team work required to play together and control the ball, within the tennis courts. The following day, our visitors from Italy and Japan arrived, who are Doctors of music from Conductive Music in the UK. They have come to Tenerife as part of their world tour, delivering music lessons and

workshops, in both centres, this weekend. They combine music and science in amazing projects, building electronic circuits and using computers to then create a piano from fruit and vegetables, which can actually play tunes when pressed. They will work with the children to teach about conductivity/music software, and the electronic side of the project, which results in the children being amazed by how it all works. This week also saw raffles being sold in all Overseas Supermarkets across the island for San Valentine’s, and some lucky people winning prizes in Las Chafiras, Los Cristianos and Torviscas. Thank you to Overseas for supporting the children, and we look forward to our Mother’s Day/Easter bagpacking days in March. The charity continues to work with the children to get them involved with work experience and opportunities, as well as preparing them for the world of work. English lessons are provided each week, in both centres, to maximise the skills of the children, to open as many doors as possible to make them successful in life.

World Day of Prayer

YOU are invited to join the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches next Friday (1st March) at San Blas Church, Golf del Sur, for the annual, World Day of Prayer service.

This international event, held on the first Friday of March, takes place in countries all over the world, and people from every denomination will be most welcome. At this year’s San Blas service, the congregation will hear the aspirations and hopes of Slovenian women: wives, mothers and grandmothers, migrant workers, refugees and Roma people. Their stories reflect the political and economic situation of Slovenia, from the time it was a socialist-communist state, to the present day. The service comprises well-known Christian songs, and there will also be melodic, Slovenian, folk music, some of which can be learned and sung during the service. Refreshments, to be served after the service, include apple pancakes, potica (a Slovenian pastry of fruit and nut), scones, sausage rolls and home-baked Slovenian rolls with cheese and pate. Accion del Sol News

Give him a chance! Lucky to be alive! ERWIN arrived at K9 in September 2016, and I first met him about eight months ago.

Initially, he was very nervous and shy. He was a bit curious, but would not let me get too close. Our first walk was not the most enjoyable for him, as he was constantly watching me, and his tail remained down. He couldn’t wait to get back to his kennel, where he felt safe and secure. I felt a little sad for him, and wondered what could have happened, to make him so nervous of new people. He stayed in my mind after that. Fast forward a few weeks, and he became so friendly towards me, to the point where he jumped up and down with excitement when he saw me. He let me kiss and cuddle him, and was so relaxed and happy on our walks together.

I then began working at K9 a few weeks later, and he began to trust me more, but I do think the fact I also brought him his food every day, did help! When Erwin is excited, it is one of the happiest and sweetest moments to embrace. He really shows his love for you, and everyone needs to experience it. Erwin is a very friendly, sweet and loving boy, who just needs to be given a second chance of a caring home. Once he gets to know you, he is a brilliant dog. He can be walked on and off lead, and always comes back when you call him. He has been at K9 for nearly three years now, and, unfortunately for him, has been overlooked by a lot of visitors, looking to rehome a dog. All the workers and volunteers at K9, who have got to know him, adore him, and he is a favourite amongst all of us. He

is four years old, which means he has spent most of his younger days in the shelter. He seems to be quite good with most dogs. It is just people who have let him down, making him nervous and fearful, at first. If you take the time, and get to know him, he will fill your life with such joy and happiness. You can call us on 667 638 468 to meet him, and all the other dogs we have in our care. Charity shop Our charity shop in Alcala Plaza is always looking for new items to sell. If you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, books or bric-a-brac, please pop them into our shop, or to K9. We welcome all kinds of items, all proceeds going towards helping the dogs. The shop is open from 10am-2pm, Monday to Saturday. Pop in, or call them on 646 561 035. Collections can also be arranged, using this number.

WE never fail to be amazed by the unbelievable cruelty of which humans are capable. These gorgeous puppies were dumped in a plastic container, by a person with no heart for animals or life, outside the church in Tegueste.

They’re now safely at the refuge, and on their way to recovery. After the official period of time and the necessary health care, vaccinations, passports and microchips, and they are given a clean bill of health, they will all be up for adoption. If you are interested in adopting one of the puppies, or any of the 230 dogs in our care, please do come and visit us. A little touch of Latin America by Paul Waller

“I’VE found a little gem here”, I thought to myself, as I left this restaurant with a big grin, a contented stomach, and some good memories to talk about.

So, you are asking, what restaurant is this? Well, the name is Carlin, a relatively-new establishment, which has only been open for six months. During that time, the right atmosphere and menu have been created, for all nationalities and families to enjoy. Where can you find this restaurant? Well, I suppose you can say it falls into the category of being one of those special restaurants that we find “up the mountain”, for those of us living

on, or visiting, this wonderful island. But, in reality, it’s only 5-10 minute drive from the TF1, just above San Isidro. It can be found 50 metres down from the Cepsa garage, by the roundabout which leads to either Charco del Pino or Granadilla. Is it worth the drive? Most definitely, and you will not be disappointed. Parking is available right outside, which, these days, is a pleasure, and there is plenty of it, too. On walking into the restaurant there is a spacious, outdoor area with lovely surroundings, for those warm evenings, and also an authentic inside area with a modern feel to it. On arrival, we were greeted by a smartlyuniformed staff member with a big smile, and in the corner of the room, by the large, open bar, was one of the evening’s singers,

with an already eager audience singing along. Once seated at our table, we were handed a very professional, bound menu, written in Spanish and English. The variety of dishes intrigued me because of the different flavours available, from typical Canarian to Latin American dishes, from Peru and Venezuela. As well as a selection of Thai dishes and speciality burgers, they also offer BBQ grill options, different types of paella, and a set, daytime menu for €7.90. The two chefs in the kitchen are from Venezuela, but I will come back to them, later. A bottle of wine was ordered and poured, and our attention turned to the starters. We ordered Venezuelan Tequenos, cheese wrapped in a special wheat flour and deep fried. This was presented very well, and tasted as good as it

22nd February 2019 - 28th February 2019 looked. The restaurant was now bustling, and the tables started to fill up. On the next table, a gentleman was eating the sirloin steak special, so we both decided to order the same. It was accompanied by crispy chips and a fresh assortment of sauteed vegetables, which were very tasty. I know it was only a sirloin steak, but, if a restaurant cannot get a steak right,

then it says a lot. Mediumrare was our preference, and medium-rare it was. The meat was lean and tender, and melted in the mouth. It was presented beautifully on a black slate, with fresh asparagus as a subtle garnish, and chips in miniature basket. We were then offered a selection of home-made desserts, and, because of the chef’s background, the staff recommended the “Tres

Leche” cake. This was a light sponge, soaked in three types of milk; heavy cream, evaporated and condensed. It was a Venezuelan speciality, which, as you can guess, was very rich and sweet, but perfect for sharing. By this time, the second singer had taken over the corner, and his performance had a few guests dancing. It wasn’t long before most of the bar were singing and dancing to a mixture

of Latin and English songs, which created a warm and enthralling atmosphere. We joined in with the fun without realising it, and felt so welcome. All this entices customers to return, over and over again. You must also try the tequila with orange and cinnamon. When the night was drawing to an end, we paid the bill. For under €40 for the night’s food and drink, for both of us, it was a lovely surprise, and what value for money it was, too. So it was time for us to leave, with a wave to the singer and staff, and the other guests around the bar. We left with

ALL motorists will be aware of the highway code and general driving regulations in their own country. But they often forget or ignore them, when abroad. For example, take British people living, or driving on holiday in Tenerife, or mainland Spain. In addition to the general road rules, some countries have their own regulations, and Spain is no exception. For instance, if you park badly, over two markedout spaces, say, or sideways across two spaces, you’d be considered to be parking illegally, because you would be causing an obstruction.

By Val Sainsbury TOBACCO smoking remains to be the primary cause of lung disease. Other factors that contribute to respiratory disease include air pollution, occupational chemicals and dusts, and frequent, lowerrespiratory infections during childhood.

With these risk factors, it might prove beneficial to undergo a lung detox, to stave off respiratory issues. Here are a few ways to naturally detoxify your lungs: Give up smoking: This should be a number-one priority. It has long been established that nicotine and tobacco smoke may compromise lung function, and increase the odds of developing lung infections and cancer. Quitting smoking will do your lungs a huge favour. Breathing exercises: These exercises, especially those that promote deep breathing, may effectively detoxify the lungs. The activity rids the lungs of unwanted

Traffic rules & regulations Many people will consider the following to be private car parks: think Asda, Tesco, etc. Here in Spain, regarding the likes of Carrefour, Mercadona, Lidl etc, the owners of these car parks permit their customers to use them, making it land being used by an indeterminate community of users. They are not public car parks, which would be where anyone could have access to park. But while they are private car parks, Spanish law applies, and the Local Police can issue an infraction or fine, for parking illegally or dangerously. This, however, only applies during their opening hours, and, when the store is shut,

and its barriers or garage doors are closed, until reopening, the rules change. Those authorised to use it during those hours would not be subject to Spanish Traffic laws! So, bear in mind that the use of your mobile phone in such car parks, while still driving, or not wearing your seatbelt, means that you could find yourself in hot water, with no recourse. Turning now to accidents. The normal course of events is that both parties, provided no one is injured, would leave their vehicles and start a discussion, sometimes heated, about who was to blame. If you do this without wearing

your reflective jacket, placing warning triangles, and each moving his vehicle to a safe place if possible, the omission of these three actions is considered to be a serious offence on each count, so be aware, and be warned! All motorists should drive with due care and attention, to avoid damage to themselves and other road-users. If not, of course, it is an infraction subject to a fine, or worse, if you drive in a negligent or reckless manner. Under Spanish Traffic laws, the interpretation of negligence is careless, or lack of care, and is a serious infraction. Reckless driving is when a motorist is shown to be aware

of his or her actions, with the knowledge that they may endanger their own safety, and that of other road-users, including pedestrians. And, if a serious offence is committed, it will become a criminal offence, and points will be deducted. One thing of particularly importance is that when someone throws a lighted cigarette-end out of a window, it is considered a serious offence, and, possibly, will result in the loss of four points from his or her licence. And be aware that if this happens in the summer months, it can easily cause a fire, especially in Teide National Park.

a mucus build-up in the lungs. This is because these foods are harder to digest. It is recommended that the consumption of healthier food is increased, including cruciferous vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans and fish. Hot showers: Taking a 20-minute hot shower may help the body to effectively remove toxins. Adding eucalyptus to hot water may provide an expectorant effect, which, in turn, may alleviate sore throats, nasal congestion and sinus problems. Lung irritants: Certain household products, such as fresheners, furniture and floor polish, aerosols and chlorine bleach, are known to induce lung irritation. Stay

away from these items, and opt for more-natural cleaning products. Chronic respiratory diseases are among the world’s top medical concerns that affect just about everybody, from small children to the elderly. In fact, data from the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, occupational lung diseases and pulmonary hypertension are some of the most prominent lung diseases that plague the global population. According to the WHO, more than three million people die annually from COPD, with 90% of these deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries. The organisation also pointed out that 235 million people around the world currently suffer from asthma. Lung disease rates in the US aren’t any better. More than nine million people in the States have chronic bronchitis, while 3.5 million are diagnosed with emphysema. Up to 174,000 cases of emergency department visits were linked to chronic and unspecified bronchitis.

Spring clean those lungs! toxins by increasing blood flow to the vital organs. Physical activities may also bolster the organs’ capacity to filter clean oxygen. Stay hydrated: There is a reason why doctors recommend that you drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Staying hydrated allows the body to provide the lungs with fresh blood and fluid. This, in turn, helps clear out mucus, and fend off bacterial infections. Not just water: Apart from drinking water, there are other sorts of beverages that promote healthy lungs. For instance, drinking water infused with lemons, ginger or peppermint are known to cleanse the respiratory system. Likewise, carrot juice is known to alkalise the body, and facilitate detoxification. In addition, green tea is touted for its potent detoxification properties. Eat antioxidant-rich foods: Consuming foods loaded with antioxidants, such as pineapples, grapes and cranberries, is a foolproof way of eliminating diseasecausing bacteria in the lungs, and maintaining a

healthy respiratory system. Herbs may do the trick: Herbs are touted for their beneficial effects on the respiratory system. For instance, oregano contains natural decongestant and anti-histamine properties, that ease nasal airflow and promote lung function. On the other hand, peppermint combats disease-causing pathogens in the lungs. Load up on potassium: Potassium is an essential mineral that keeps the lungs healthy. Consuming potassium-rich foods may help promote overall respiratory health. Mucus-producing foods: A number of food items like dairy, meat, soy and wheat are known to trigger

Flybmi collapse strands hundreds of passengers

THE Flybmi airline blamed Brexit, after leaving hundreds of passengers stranded throughout Europe, when the British regional airline ceased operations without warning last Saturday, after going bankrupt.

British Midland Regional Limited, the airline operating as flybmi, made the announcement after filing for administration, the British version of bankruptcy, because of inflated fuel costs and uncertainty over Britain’s departure from the European Union. Airline officials said on its website: “It is with a heavy heart that we have made this unavoidable

announcement. “We sincerely regret that this course of action has become the only option open to us, but the challenges, particularly those created by Brexit, have proven to be insurmountable.” It added: “All customers due to travel with the company will need to rebook flights with an alternative airline. “We are unable to arrange

or reschedule any flights for you.” The company, based in the Midlands, employed more than 450 staff, operating more than 600 scheduled flights a week across Europe. But it stressed: “Current trading and future prospects have also been seriously affected by the uncertainty created by the Brexit process, which has led to our inability to secure valuable flying

contracts in Europe, and lack of confidence around flybmi’s ability to continue flying between destinations in Europe. “Additionally, our situation mirrors wider difficulties in the regional airline industry which have been well documented.” Yet the airline’s website was still taking bookings last Saturday evening, ahead of the announcement.

Football IT is estimated that close to four billion people tuned in to watch the FIFA World Cup last summer, which proves, without doubt, that football is the world’s most popular sport.

The sport has the highestpaid athletes and the most professional leagues, as well as the most expensive television rights. At any given time, more than 240 million people worldwide play football. But the history of this revered sport is complicated. Records trace the genesis of something similar to football back 2,000 years, to ancient China, Greece, Rome… and even Central America! In any case, the British began kicking around an inflated pig’s bladder in the 13th century! Local denizens would travel between villages, aiming to kick the “ball” against a designated church door to settle local disputes. But the game was often violent, and sometimes deadly. In 1815, Cambridge and Eton College began to codify the rules, and, by 1863, the English began to form the leagues and federations we know today. Over the next 50 years, football was spread by British immigrant workers, colonialists, sailors and exchange students, to nearly all corners of the globe. And Spain was no exception. If you ask where and when the first recorded football game took place on the Iberian Peninsula, the answer is Andalucia! In 1873, amid the instability and financial bankruptcy of the Spanish state, the Rio Tinto mines, near Huelva, were purchased by British entrepreneurs. Over the next few years, an influx of British miners, garrison soldiers and railroad workers arrived. In 1887, on the feast day of San Roque (the patron saint of the sick and disabled), locals and Brits gathered to celebrate. This two-day fiesta had the reputation of being a drunken melee, which, when the men were sober enough to stand upright, included climbing a greasy pole, donkey races and a tug-of-war, etc. The Brits celebrated by forming two teams, picked exclusively from among nonSpaniards in the first recorded “foot-ball” match on the Iberian Peninsula. Captain W.F. Adams, a member of an English garrison unit which served

How Spain discovered its football roots, with an offer of ‘fowl’ play

to protect British mining interests, chronicled the event for his superiors, writing: “Marched out of Huelva on Wednesday. Played football with some railway workers… the only diversion we truly had.” Although the note was short, cursory and handwritten, it remains the earliest tangible proof of Rio Tinto’s claim to be the “cuna del futbol espanol” (birthplace of Spanish football). But was it truly the first football game played on Spanish soil? It depends on who you ask…. But 900km to the north, in Basque country in and around Bilbao, a different story is told. Again, the “first game of football” was tied to the British and mining, but in an entirely different context. The Rio Tinto enterprise was run like a mining camp, the local Spanish miners being subject to exploitation, along with the uncertainty of mineral supply and demand. For the most part, though, they were segregated from British management. Not so in the more-developed/ industrialised north. Bilbao, unlike Andalucia, was becoming an industrial dynamo.

Technology and the second half of the British industrial revolution required steel, shipbuilding and chemical industries, all of which were Bilbao’s great strength. Local Basque shippers and industrialists were front and centre in forming a strong, Spanish, entrepreneurial class, not subject to the rule of British demands. Yet many of the sons of Basque’s educated class completed their education in Britain, where they developed an interest in football. And, on their return home,

they began arranging matches with British workers. Thus, football’s Anglo-Saxon roots had to contend with the Basque’s strong sense of an independent culture and political identity. Unlike the Rio Tinto/Huelva case, the early introduction of football to the Basque Country provided an avenue for integration and participation between the British expats and locals. An 1893 article in a Bilbao newspaper speaks of when a group of Bilbainos challenged a team of Los Ingleses to a football match. The Englishmen won the toss and chose to play the first half with the sun behind them. The game was said to have been extremely physical, with heavy tackling, which angered the Bilbainos and gave the Los Ingleses a 2-0 advantage at half-time. With low spirits, the local team returned to their locker-room and were confounded by the delivery of 11 “exquisitelyroasted” chickens as a gift of restitution from their opponents. The game was delayed to allow the locals to enjoy their meal, just as the crafty Los Ingleses had planned. But this was, surely, the first sign of

fowl play in football! By the time the game resumed, the sun was setting, slowing the Bilbainos in sunlight and indigestion. But after their humiliating 6-0 defeat, the locals vowed to build competitive teams. In 1897, four years after that definitive “chicken match”, Basque football enthusiasts were confident enough about their own abilities to form one of the first local, allSpanish, football clubs. The first recorded football game may, or may not have, taken place in Rio Tinto, but the first all-Spanish football match took place in Bilbao. The football fervour spread quickly, from Basque country across northern Spain to Madrid, Catalonia and beyond. By 1915, regional Spanish teams began league play, and, in 1920, Spain won a silver medal in the Olympics (Antwerp). By 1928, the meteoric rise of league rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona had become a Spanish obsession, and Spain’s international teams were prolific as well. They finished fourth in the 1950 World Cup, won the European Championship in 1964, and were runners-up in 1984. Winning gold in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was a source of great national pride, as was winning the 2010 World Cup In reviewing the history of “fútbol” in Spain, it really is comical that its origins can be traced to a drunken Huelva fiesta, and the Bilbao “chicken match”.

Scooters not that slow! PAS O Nadas ‘A’ laid down a huge claim for the league’s No.1 spot, when they travelled to Scooters ‘A’. But the match was much closer than the 8-0 result suggests, although Daddy Cool and Andy both contributed 180s. A couple of doors away, the Loch-In ‘A’ completed a 7-1 win against Ourplace Playboys, despite a maximum for the home side’s Nathan. Game of the night was Del Boy, racing into a

CD Tenerife EVERY game is turning into a “must win” for Tenerife, whose good start to 2019 must seem a lifetime away, following a month with two points gained from a possible 12, and still no away win this season! For Cádiz, this was their first home game after two away fixtures, and their return to Ramón de Carranza stadium proved fruitful, because they dominated a Tenerife side who looked off the pace and short of ideas. Oltra’s men started brightly, with a quick break from the first whistle, and a short-range effort from Suso, which found the side-netting. Unfortunately, this was not a sign of things to come. In fact, it was the only time they forced Cádiz goalkeeper Alberto Cifuentes into action. After this, it was not a case of if Cádiz would score, but when, and how many! Their first chance came after 30 minutes, when Rober Correa fed the ball into space for David Querol, whose cross was perfect for Lekic, who headed across goal, but just wide of keeper Dani’s far post. The home team continued to press and had a two more half-chances. But

2-0 lead over Telf. But he missed his double in the third leg, and Telf stormed back to win 3-2. Gaffers’ Joe had two maximums, and Matt another one, as they won 5-3 against inspired visitors Legends. The Mad Hatters won by the same score as they hosted Picasso’s. Clouseau’s welcomed Waterfall, who found their form this week, and went home with a 6-2 win. Ourplace Breakaways were also at home, to titlechasing Emerald Lounge ‘B’, and this went to the wire, the Golf del Sur team edging the trebles and a 5-3 win. The Nauta Nomads clash with Palms Sports Bar went to the latter, who won 6-2. As we come to the close of another successful season, both divisions are

Tenerife in freefall! Cádiz CF 2 CD Tenerife 0

the first session finished in controversy, after Machis fell inside the area as he was turning towards goal. Cádiz players and fans claimed a penalty, but referee Vicandi Garrido had no doubt and didn’t give it, instead, blowing for half-time and sending the players down the tunnel. The Cádiz breakthrough came quickly in the second

half, when, after just four minutes, Edu Ramos received the ball from a short corner, and put over a floating cross towards the Tenerife goal, which just continued to float, straight over Dani’s head and in for a goal. Fortunate? Yes! Deserved? Yes! And, to be fair, Dani, who was left in no-man’s land, could do nothing about it. To add more fuel to the fire,

Cádiz coach Álvaro Cervera made a couple of changes, bringing on Tenerife-born Jairo Izquierdo to the mix, and sending the away fans over boiling point! Ironically, Jairo doubled the lead in the 72nd minute after good build-up play from Machis found Salvi, wide on the right. Salvi found the Tenerifian in front of goal, and fed him the

ball to slot home past Dani to make it 2-0, and send the home fans into ecstasy. From here, Oltra’s men were disconnected, and they even had to play the last 10 minutes with the same number of men, after Naranjo received a second yellow for a foul on Sergio Sánchez, and was sent for an early bath. At the final whistle, Cádiz were able to reflect on an easy three points, and a second consecutive win. It left them a healthy seventh in the league, and fighting with Oviedo and Mallorca for that fourth playoff place. Tenerife, on the other hand, need to find a way to score goals and win games. They stay in 16th place, still six points above the danger zone. But the gap above them is starting to widen, and every game is becoming a six-pointer. Their next one will be tricky, too, at home against Mallorca tonight (Friday) at 8pm. They beat Lugo 3-0 in their last match, and, when on form, are one of the best in the league.
