A great spectacle is a must for everybody

Continued from Front

While this is debatable, it has been voted the Carnival Capital of the World, beating Rio, Notting Hill and New Orleans, and it begins today (Friday) for the entire month. Most European cities celebrate their carnivals in the winter, as does Tenerife, but the island’s enticing warm weather makes it the most perfect place for a rousing shindig. The highlight comes in the week, prior to Ash Wednesday, when the celebrations kick into high gear. And during this week, businesses shut down and everyone heads out to party. The carnival begins with several competitions, like awards for the best murgas (musical troupes) and many other singing and dancing competitions. There is also the crowning of the Carnival Queens.

Once that ceremony has been completed, the real party begins in Tenerife, and, for two weeks, the streets are filled with colour, costumes and joy. The entire area is jam-packed with numerous parades, shows, concerts, masquerade balls, and nonstop parties. Most of the daily crowds, young and old, get into costume and light up the Santa Cruz streets with long nights, filled with feasting, socialising and dancing, along with copious volumes of drinking. The origins of Tenerife Carnival date back to the 15th century, when it was brought to the island after the 1492 Spanish Conquest. Like most carnivals, it was the last chance for a feast, and giving into excess, before fasting throughout Lent. In the 19th century, Tenerife Carnival became more official and the

first competitions were introduced. Masquerading had also become popular, allowing people to become anonymous so that they could hide their social class, or take part in some anonymous debauchery.

The first official Tenerife Carnival to be organised by the city was in 1925. But shortly afterwards, during the Franco dictatorship, attempts were made to cancel it. However, the celebrations continued, announced as “winter parties”. But when Franco died in 1980, the carnival returned to its original name. Every year, Tenerife Carnival has a theme, which is used as inspiration for the parades and costumes. The official theme for the 2019 extravaganza is the Deep Sea! So, you can expect to see a lot of blue, and maybe a few mermaids around the town! Tenerife Carnival is split into two parts: the official carnival and the street carnival. The official version features over 100 musical groups: murgas, comparsas and rondallas. The street carnival is where

you can just hit the streets and get lost, enjoying the more spontaneous celebrations. And be prepared, because the streets are filled with thousands of costumed people, every day. The Cabalgata is today’s opening parade, which always goes with a bang! It is vibrant, and features the Carnival Queen, murgas, dance groups and more. The atmosphere is always electric, as everyone gets in the mood to enjoy the start of carnival. A parade takes place from the Parque de la Granja, passing through Las Ramblas and ending at the Plaza de Europa. And for the stouthearted, the parade is followed by a mammoth street party, which lasts until dawn! And, as the Carnival warms up, by the day, there’s so much more to witness and enjoy.

Driver dies after a horrific car crash

A DRIVER, 42, died in a horrendous road crash early yesterday (Thursday) morning, after two cars collided, and the other driver involved, aged 23, suffered considerable injuries. The incident happened on the TF-629, inside the Arico municipality, and the Canarian emergency services received a call at 6.37am. The operator was told about a crash, on the road

heading towards Villa de Arico, and that both drivers were trapped inside their vehicles. The fire services, along with the Guardia Civil and three ambulances, were dispatched to the scene.

The 42-year-old had the most severe injuries, and, when the medics reached him, he was in a critical condition. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack at the scene, and the medical team immediately began with CPR, in an attempt to save him, but, tragically, he passed away. The other driver was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment and observation.

Driver’s facial damage after double-crash woe

A DRIVER, aged 54, was injured when his car collided into a wall and a tree on the TF-5 motorway, in the La Orotava area, in the early hours of Saturday.

The emergency services were alerted just before 5am, after the caller reported the traffic

accident. Ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and medics assessed the driver. He had facial injuries and was taken for treatment to Bellevue Hospital, in Santa Cruz. La Orotava fire-fighters were also dispatched to the scene to remove the vehicle, along with Guardia Civil officers, who conducted traffic control.

End of the line for disposable plastic

1st March 2019 - 7th March 2019

THE European Union, including Spain, will be rid of disposable plastic by 2021, and, by then, heaps of everyday, throwaway items, which take up to 1,000 years to break down and disappear, will be off the shelves.

Other types will be heavily restricted, and a third category will be the subject of prevention campaigns and recycling, even though what can be recycled differs greatly, depending on where you are on the continent. In Spain, all soft plastics, including cling-film, crisp packets, packaging, carrier bags, and even wet-wipes can be dumped in the yellow bins for sorting and re-use. And the same container takes drink cans and other tins, along with milk and juice cartons. Yet, in the UK, still the 28th member State, hard plastics only can be recycled. Any kind of wrapper goes in landfill, or is burnt, and the only way to dispose of carrier bags without harming the environment is to return them to supermarkets, if they will accept them! Plastic plates, straws, cutlery, cups and bottles means that Spain’s fiestas will need a huge overhaul: plastic plates,

cups, straws, cocktail-stirrers and cutlery, used three times daily by each of the peñas, or festival “clubs” for their openair, communal meals, will be on the banned list by 2021. Plastic cups, along with water bottles, will still be permitted, but at least 25% must be made with recycled plastic by 2025, and at least 30% by 2030. But, until then, they should be dumped in yellow bins. Cotton buds made with plastic will be banned by 2021, although already some countries – including the UK – have started making them with paper instead. Balloon manufacturers will be required to label their products to state the level of damage to the environment

they cause, as well as giving some of their profits to the ocean clean-up – plastic in the sea is expected to exceed fish by volume by the year 2050 if it continues to be used at the current rate – and plastic sticks will no longer be permitted. Food cartons and takeaway food in foil or plastic cartons – commonly used in Spain, since practically all restaurants will allow you to take unfinished portions home – must be ‘significantly reduced’ in number by the year after next, and their manufacturers will be required to fund seacleaning to offset their ‘plastic footprint’. These cartons are gradually being replaced with cardboard versions, but the foil and plastic ones

can also go in the ‘yellow bins’; although it’s not compulsory, it’s kinder to wash them first. As for wet-wipes or babywipes, they can probably be put in the yellow bin if used for face-cleaning, but, for obvious reasons, not if they are employed as a toilet-paper substitute. Manufacturers will be obliged to label these products prominently to show they contain plastic and are not biodegradable, that they damage the environment unless properly disposed of, and they should never be flushed down the toilet. Recent issues with wetwipes have led to blocked pipes backing up on to the Jávea beach, in the Alicante province.

And a “fatberg”, nearly one kilometre long, was discovered in Valencia’s underground drainage network, while another, not much smaller, came to light in the Valencia province of Tavernes de la Valldigna. A reduction in the use of plastic carrier bags has clearly been seen across the EU in recent years, partly because of compulsory charges, and an estimated 70% of Spanish consumers bring their own reusable bags to stores. Disposable versions can be recycled in the yellow bin. For hygiene reasons, all nonrecyclable, household waste, must be in a sealed bag when dumped in wheelie-bins. But for any household to be completely plastic-free, manufacturers must design carrier and bin bags from biodegradable material. Some supermarkets have already dramatically slashed their disposable plastic, and though carrier bags will not be banned altogether, manufacturers will have to contribute resources towards cleaning up the seas, and use recycled plastic as much as possible. It is hoped that the EU will eventually set minimum recycling facility requirements across the bloc, forcing local councils’ hands, where they are not doing enough to protect the environment.

Off-duty Guardia officer cuts up rough with a cop AN off-duty Guardia Civil agent was detained by the National Police last weekend, for attempting to attack the officer on duty, in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz.

Sources say the accused was having a few drinks at a bar in Avenida Francisco la Roche, when, suddenly, there was an altercation in the street, and the off-duty Guardia man waded in. The National Police were called, and, on arrival, began to intervene immediately, trying to calm the situation. In doing so, however, they attempted to soothe an individual who just hap-

pened to be the off-duty Guardia Civil officer. Witnesses says he turned aggressive and began to threaten one of the National Police officers. Eventually, the National Police had to request assistance from fellow officers in the Local Police, and the off-duty Guardia agent was arrested and charged. Sources have stated that arrests involving, or between, different forces, is a rare event. They also say that if this situation had been resolved another way, the outcome would have been different. Authorised sources from Santa Cruz National Police did not want to make any statement about the events that night.

Italian ‘kidnappers’ jailed by a judge, straight away! TWO Italian men have been ordered to prison by a judge, following their attempted kidnap on a countryman.

One Italian was caught redhanded, while the second was nabbed in the vicinity, shortly afterwards. A third Italian at the scene, also involved, fled the scene and was still on the loose as we went to Press last night (Thursday). The incident happened last Thursday when witnesses saw the three men trying to abduct another person, presumed Italian, at Adeje’s Los Olivos shopping centre. These witnesses notified the Local Police after they saw the men trying to force another person into the boot of their car. They said the victim had been beaten, brutally, and that the incident appeared to be an attempted kidnap. Police arrived at the shopping centre before matters got worse, and they were able to free the victim, who was in a poor state. They then proceeded to arrest the driver, after a brave woman, who

witnessed the events, parked her car in such a position that it prevented the Italians’ vehicle from leaving the area. As well as being badly beaten, the victim was forced into the car boot, by means of a Taser gun. Evidence of the gun was found in the vicinity, and it showed that the victim received at least two charges from the weapon. Guardia Civil officers took over the case and they concluded that the attempted kidnap was all about “settling accounts”. They feel the four Italians must have known each other, because neither the victim, nor his three would-be kidnappers, had covered their faces during the attack. The Guardia Civil believe they had all been working alongside each other, with joint involvements in several businesses, and that they were all connected to Naples. As for the victim, he suffered some injuries, although he had no bones broken. The Guardia Civil are still investigating the incident, in an attempt to find the whereabouts of the fourth person involved.

Woman’s violent partner spends night behind bars

A MAN from the Maldives, aged 40, was arrested last Saturday for attacking his partner, violently, in Adeje’s Casco area. Police received reports of a couple fighting, and the scrap become so violent, physically, that the police were forced to intervene. The incident happened inside a Calle de los Molinos restaurant at around 8pm, and, apparently, the cause

of the fight was said to be jealousy. Witnesses said the woman was inside the restaurant, enjoying the company of her Romanian friends, when, suddenly, the accused entered the restaurant with his father. Onlookers said the fight broke out suddenly, with both parties attacking each other. The woman hit the man, who dragged her to the ground and put his foot on her neck, pressing down fiercely. The police, having received

several calls by concerned diners, arrived at the scene and intervened. After questioning the couple, as well as restaurant witnesses, the man was arrested and charged with offences of sexist, domestic violence. The woman was taken to an Adeje medical centre for treatment to the injuries sustained during the attack. The incident finally ended just before 9.30pm, when the attacker was taken to Adeje police station. He had his rights read to him, before spending a night in the cells!

NEWS IN BRIEF Safest zebra crossing of all?

Aldi flies the flag in Spain

A PEDESTRIAN crossing, dubbed on social media as “possibly the safest in the world”, is featured in the Lanzarote area of Elba, on the Costa Blanca. The road not only comes to an abrupt dead-end, immediately after the crossing, but it is also protected by bollards on the approach. And if you have had the misfortune of being struck on the ultra-safe crossing, you must count among the unluckiest people ever! The astonishing crossing came in the same week as the most unlikely “stop” sign was revealed in Gran Canaria’s Firgas, where a palm tree blocks the road between the metre-high letters and the “stop” line.

Helicopter rescues shepherd

A CONSUMER study, involving nearly 6,000 people, has revealed what customers consider Spain’s best and worst supermarkets to be. A survey by the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU), conducted every four years, says the stores which give greater satisfaction are Bonpreu, in the supermarket

category, Hipercor in hypermarkets and Aldi in discount stores. At the other end of the scale, Carrefour Market, Plaza de Dia and Simply (the Supermarket of Alcampo), as well as Supersol, are the worst rated. Taking into account the criteria of assortment and quality, the best scores were received by El Corte Ingles Supermarket and Hipercor,

followed by Carrefour and Alcampo. At the bottom of the table sit the chains Dia (Dia and La Plaza de Dia), Supersol and Coviran. And in terms of prices and offers, favoured stores are Lidl and Dia, E Leclerc and Mas y Mas. The worst, in relation to competitive prices, are El Corte Ingles group, Carrefour Market, Condis and Froiz.

Three critical after a head-on collision TWO men and two women, all middleaged, were injured in a head-on collision in Lanzarote, in Nazaret’s Costa area. A SHEPHERD was injured last weekend after falling into a ravine while working at the Barranco de Garome, in La Palma.

The emergency services were contacted and alerted that the 55-year-old had received a suspected head injury from his fall. They were dispatched, immediately, along with the helicopter, the latter’s crew finally finding and rescuing him. He was promptly evacuated by helicopter to a helipad at La Palma’s general hospital, where on-the-spot medics assessed the victim. The shepherd had suffered considerable head injuries and was admitted for further treatment and observation.

It happened last Monday night, just before 10.30, when the vehicles crashed into each other, causing one of the cars to roll over before bursting into flames. Fire-fighters and ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and, on arrival, firemen began to extinguish the flames immediately, while medics attended to the injured parties. All four people have been

transferred to the Jose Molina Orosa hospital, and three of

them, injured badly, are in a critical condition.

Adeje Council offers service for LGBTIQ

ADEJE Council has recently opened a new service, as the first regional office in South Tenerife to attend to the LGBTIQ public in particular.

With the Algarabía association and the Red Prisma, the initiative works to meet the demands of this collective, and works to extend the remit to a wider public, improving public services in general for the LGBTIQ members of our society. The Algarabía office is based at Adeje’s Department of Health, where other public services are located, such as InfoSex, services for women, the consumers’ office, the oncology service with the

Spanish cancer association, along with other personalattention offices. Health Protection Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo said: “This is an important moment for us, because we are delighted to add the Algarabía public office to our list of services, as people who work with us for the rights of lesbians, gays, transsexuals, bisexuals, inter-sexuals and others. “We have given over this office so that the groups can work together to meet their needs, the demands of many people affected, and, above all, offer social services, personalised attention and work to defend the rights of all.” The decision to locate the office here has relevance,

too, said Councillor Bencomo, because it is beside the Plaza Pedro Zerolo, named after a man who worked tirelessly for equality, diversity and social inclusion. Charlie Marrero, Algarabía President, said: “The LGBTI collective is one of the groups suffering most discrimination. Our data shows that 17% of those identifying as LGBTI, and in secondary school, have attempted suicide; 40% suffer school bullying; 85% of transsexuals have reported discrimination in the workplace, and there has been huge number of incidents and reports of crimes against members of the collective.” The office will be open to the public on Fridays, between 9am-1pm.

Cops crack drug chain with huge cocaine haul NATIONAL police have intercepted a drug-distribution chain, after discovering an enormous 400-kilo cocaine cache. It was hidden in an industrial warehouse at Madrid’s el corredor de Henares, awaiting shipment to the UK. During the investigation, it was confirmed that the drugs belonged to a Spanish-British organisation, and that a significant volume of cocaine was imported to Galicia. It was then transported to the Madrid warehouse in a heavy-goods lorry, to be stored until it could be shipped out of Spain.

Tragedy of airlift man

A MAN died last Monday morning, after being rescued by helicopter from a precarious area of the Arona coastline, between El Fraile and Palm Mar. The Canarian emergency services were alerted by a caller, just after 9.30, that a man was lying in a difficult area and appeared to be unconscious. The necessary emergency services were dispatched to

the scene immediately, as well as the maritime searchand-rescue team. When the emergency services arrived, it was confirmed that the unfortunate man had suffered a heart attack, though the cause was not confirmed. The rescue teams carried out CPR after finding the individual, and the treatment continued while he was airlifted by helicopter to Adeje fire station’s helipad. A specialised ambulance awaited them, but, sadly, the man’s life could not be saved.

Woman fiddled a fortune to fuel her gambling bug A WOMAN, arrested by National Police in Lanzarote, has been charged with embezzling 25,000 euros from the company for whom she worked. The woman was arrested and charged with fiddling the funds. And she was able to swindle the whole lot, despite an investigation into missing money last September. That was when the woman, supposedly, lost 15,000 euros

while on the way to bank the money in the firm’s business account. She told the officers, while being questioned, that the money was inside an envelope, but when she reached the bank it wasn’t in her possession. Since February, however, it has come to light that the woman had been helping herself to funds from the business. She had spent the stolen money on gambling… and continued doing so before the game was up.

Taxi driver loses his rag with customer and child

During their search, investigators discovered that a huge part of the stash found was branded with a logo “M”, while some were marked with a different logo. Police believe the drug-

smugglers marked the packages, because it is unusual to see them carrying a logo. They are still in the process of collecting evidence, to enable them to carry out the relevant arrests.

A RESIDENT from Gran Canaria has served denuncias with the Local and National Police on two taxi drivers for being aggressive, following an incident featuring a threeyear-old. The man and his partner got into a taxi with their godson, who then put his knees on the back seat, across the upholstery, said the driver, who turned nasty. The man who filed the denuncia said the taxi driver shouted, aggressively: “Get the f****** child out of here!” Several witnesses said the taxi driver was also trying to

attack the man and woman physically, by kicking and hitting them. The customer then tried to seek refuge in another taxi, but the that driver refused his services. The aggrieved man has since gone public with a video of the incident on his Facebook page, which shows him being kicked and punched.

Volunteer team in place for animal rescue centre

Feeling healthy? And so you should BE

SPAIN has just pipped Italy to become the world’s healthiest country, according to the latest edition of the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, which ranks 169 economies according to factors contributing to overall health.

THE first volunteer carers began working in Adeje’s Animal Rescue Centre a week ago, with seven people meeting all the requirements necessary to care for these animals. From now on, this team, who can include up to three more, will be responsible for walking dogs, brushing and shampooing them, playing and training in socialisation, as well as helping during puppy feeds. Their activities will never include the work of the centre’s full-time staff, such as preparing the food for the animals, cleaning the installations, administering

medicines, etc. The animals listed as “potentially dangerous” will always be handled by personnel from Adeje Council, who are in possession of the appropriate licences. Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, said: “This is a great move for the borough, to have the team of volunteers now active in the centre. “It is an important moment for us, because we have spent time preparing the regulations to allow these volunteers to participate, and to ensure that the Centre is run properly. “We have been delighted to engage with volunteers who want to help and contribute to the development of these pets in the centre. “It is a terrific reflection of the

kind of people we have, who are ready and willing to take on these volunteer duties.” Among the requirements for volunteers, as well as confirming that they are over 18, is a medical certificate, stating they are not ill, and a judicial declaration, stating that they have never been reported or convicted of animal abuse, or arrested for mistreating a domestic pet. In parallel, they must demonstrate, officially, that they are a member of a legally-constituted, nonprofit, volunteer organisation, which is constituted properly. The seven individuals have also had to undergo a period of obligatory practical sessions over a month, after which they were presented with a Council accreditation. Any volunteer can be active

for up to a year, after which he or she must reapply to continue. In this way, the centre can ensure that more people who wish to volunteer have an opportunity to do so. Those who do qualify must commit to at least 50% of the established hours they are signed up for, on a monthly basis, carry out the allocated activity in the hours assigned for it, and follow the instructions of the Centre’s responsible personnel. To apply for a volunteer’s job, there must be volunteer vacancy free, and the panel will give priority to those who have not previously worked, voluntarily, at the Centre, thus allowing more people to participate. The full regulations are available to consult online, www.adeje.es.

Four additional European nations make the top 10: Iceland (third), Switzerland (fifth), Sweden (sixth) and Norway (ninth), while the UK sits in 19th place. The index grades nations based on variables including life expectancy, while imposing penalties on risks such as tobacco use and obesity. It also considers environmental factors such as access to clean water and sanitation. Spain by 2040 is forecast to have the highest lifespan, at almost 86 years, followed by Japan, Singapore and Switzerland, according to the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. “Primary care is essentially provided by public providers, specialised family doctors and staff nurses, who provide preventive services to children, women and elderly patients, and acute and chronic care,” according to the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies 2018 review of Spain, noting a decline during the past decade in cardiovascular diseases and deaths from cancer.

Loro Parque Foundation breathes new life into a parrot breed on way out

Woman’s untimely death is probed by expert team

A WOMAN, identified as 34-year-old AZMF, was found naked and dead at her Puerto del Rosario home last week.

SIX Tenerife-born examples of a parrot, in danger of extinction, have been reintroduced, successfully, to the Brazilian wilds, thanks to the Loro Parque Foundation.

The Lear’s Macaw is one of nine species the Foundation has saved from imminent extinction, thanks to the funding of conservation projects. The six Lear’s Macaw (Anodorhynchus leari) specimens, born in the Loro Parque Foundation’s facilities and moved last August to Brazil for their reinsertion in nature, have already adapted to the harsh conditions of their habitat in the Caatinga, and are now flying free in the wild. The parrot is one of the most important projects of the Foundation, which has moved its category, on the Red List of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), from “critically endangered” to “endangered”. The protection and progressive recovery of this species has been a long road, and a lot of work. But it has highlighted the work performed, ex-situ, by the Loro Parque Foundation. In 2006, the Brazilian Government transferred two pairs there, in the hope that the Foundation staff could raise and save a species, in a situation similar to that of the Spix’s Macaw, which is now extinct in nature. In just six months, the Foundation helped the birds start reproducing, and, since then, more than 30 specimens have been bred in Tenerife. However, the Foundation’s objective has always been to enable them to return to

their natural environment, and, once there, to ensure their sustainability. During this period, a total of 15 specimens have been sent, nine of them to participate in the National Action Plan for the conservation of the species, achieving a notable increase in the population. The last six individuals to arrive in Brazil have spent an adaption spell in a large aviary, based in a natural environment, with plants typical of the ecology of the species. And it is also where they have become familiar with the sounds of nature and with the conditions of the area, where the Lear’s Macaw was found previously. During this process, the project team had to face several challenges: that the birds could adapt to eating the fruit of the licuri palm, which the species feeds on, at the same speed as other wild birds. And they adapted superbly, given that they were accustomed to a softer meal, and that they stopped drinking water directly from a drinking trough and began to consume liquid obtained from the fruit of the palm trees. Happily, all obstacles challenging them were successfully overcome, and they were also trained to increase their cardio-respiratory capacity, in addition to reacting to sounds of possible predators.

It was the most determined specimen, and the most curious of the six, which was first to leave the soft-release aviary to inspect the area and serve as an advanced safety guard, made these initial flights equipped with a locator to record his movements. Once he established the distances and returned safely to the precinct, the gate was opened for the others. The nearby palms were provided with large bunches of licuri fruits to avoid them having to search for food during their first experiences in their natural habitat. Thus, they gradually left the enclosure and found similar conditions, without having to make long journeys. Thanks to this huge breakthrough, the Lear’s Macaw has reached one of the most important phases in its recovery, and its integration into the natural environment will continue to be monitored by Brazilian scientists. They are led by biologist Erica Pacifico, General Coordinator of the release project, who, connected directly with Loro Parque Foundation experts, will continue to monitor the evolution of the process. This project was made possible, through the important support and collaboration of Brazilian and international institutions, fundamental in different phases of the release project.

She was showing signs of decomposition, though the body had not been physically abused. Neighbours from the Buena Vista area raised the alarm, calling the Canarian emergency services to report a strange smell, emanating from the woman’s home. The National and Local Police, from Puerto del Rosario, were sent to the building, along with the fire service, and officers noticed

that the door was locked from inside. Once they had forced their way in, they found a lifeless body on the floor. The woman was a well- known resident, and police, because of the decomposition, suspected that she had been dead for a least a week. They were also suspicious because they noticed that her home had been “ruffled”, so an investigation began with forensic experts, who were there for several hours, collecting evidence. The body was taken to the Fuerteventura morgue in the General Hospital Virgen de la Peña, and an autopsy will determine the cause of death.

Cops hold bullies, who battered boy

TWO minors, both 17, have been detained by the National Police, for committing a violent robbery on another youngster in Arrecife, Lanzarote.

The young man, also 17, suffered physical injuries and needed medical attention, after receiving several punches and kicks from the pair. The incident happened because they were trying to bully him into stealing a packet of biscuits at a local supermarket. But he refused, and took a beating from them.

The young thugs then stole his watch and back-pack. But the father of the injured lad called the National Police to report the incident. The officers went to the nearby medical centre, where the youth was being treated for his injuries, to interview him, then searched for the assailants. They found the pair hiding at a building site near the supermarket, and arrested both teenagers for robbery with violence. The wrist-watch and backpack were returned to the victim, and the police report is now with the Las Palmas juvenile courts, where the bully-boys are awaiting a hearing.

Irish customers and visitors can now book seats as far ahead as March 2020 and enjoy our latest, customer-care improvements, so there’s never been a better time to book a low-fare flight with us.” The Irish airline was beset with staff problems, throughout last week.

Spain’s return plan for illegal migrants

The Spanish Government has given the nod to a scheme that will see some migrant boats returned to Morocco, in an attempt to curb the flow of migrants. Under this strategy, Spain’s sea-rescue service, Salvamento Maritimo, will be allowed to disembark res-

cued migrants at Moroccan ports. Before, illegal migrants, caught trying to cross the western Mediterranean, were brought to Spanish ports, even if they were picked up nearer the Moroccan coast. The move comes as the Pedro Sanchez Government attempts to halve the number of illegal migrants, following 2018’s record 62,000 arrivals. According to respected newspaper El Pais, Govern-

ment sources said: “Salvamento Marítimo rescues people in danger in Spanish waters and leads them to the closest safe ports, which are Spanish. “But, also, and given the good relations with Morocco, it will provide assistance to the Moroccan Navy, if need be. “In that case, the rescued people will be taken to the nearest safe harbour, which will be in Morocco.”

Guardia officers up for the crack!

THE Guardia Civil, based at Gran Canaria’s Gáldar municipality, have detained a 24-year-old man, after catching him with 110 doses of crack cocaine and 13 wraps of heroin in his possession. The man, identified as TFGR, who had no police record before the arrest, was detained by officers, after several reports had been made by concerned neighbours of an individual, acting suspiciously in their area.

‘Cannibal’ son chopped up mum, & ate bits with dog!

As the officers approached him for questioning, the man spotted them and ran off. But the officers caught up with him, and searched the individual, which is when they found his stash. The drugs were confiscated and taken to a nearby laboratory to be analysed. The man, who has since been charged with crimes against public safety, is now awaiting a date to appear before the judge.

Chance glance by cops catches a drug-dealer OFFICERS from the National Police department in La Laguna arrested and charged a 38-year-man, carrying a stash of marijuana in the boot of his car, stuffed inside two large black bin-bags. The discovery was made purely by chance, while the officers were carrying out a police check, and asked the car to pull over. The police confirmed that his paperwork was correct, but when they

glanced inside the car boot, they discovered the two large bags, along with the contents. The man was arrested and charged with an offence against public health, as well as drug-dealing and possession. Once the corresponding reports have been processed, they will be sent, along with the detainee, to the courts for the procedure to begin.

Flipping hell. A real sight for sore eyes!

SHOCKED National Police arrested a 26-year-old man last week, after officers found his pensioner mother’s dismembered body in her home, in the Madrid’s upmarket neighbourhood of Salamanca.

They were even more stunned to learn, from the son, named in Spanish media as Alberto Sanchez Gomez, that he and their pet dog had eaten “the little bits” he had cut off the 66-year-old woman’s body.

Police officers went to the address to investigate, after reports were made by the woman’s friend, who ‘hadn’t seen her in over a month’. Once they were inside the home, the woman’s dismembered body was found inside plastic Tupperware food containers, around the house. The officers arrested her son, who was present during the search, and who admitted killing and dismembering his mother, eating “liitle bits” of the body, with their pet dog. Police sources state, allegedly: “Everything points to a case of cannibalism.”

van was gathering a container with its crane. But, inexplicably, the crane hooked an old wooden electricity pole, which was ripped out of the ground, causing a domino effect. The pole fell on to the back bumper of a parked vehicle, causing the car to flip up against the collection truck, as well as a parked car next to it.

The detainee is expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, before being handed over to an investigating judge for further questioning. He is understood to be known to police for previous domestic-violence arrests, and has been described locally as a person who had caused problems within his family. He is currently being held in police cells at a station in the Madrid neighbourhood of Tetuan. He was expected to appear in court in a behindclosed-doors hearing, earlier this week.

How to expose the fake 50-euro notes

The Guardia Civil in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, are continuing to receive several reports of false bank notes, specifically, the 50euro version. Many people, residents and tourists alike, have inundated officials with complaints about the scam, while the Central European bank urges people to take a closer look, by feeling the paper and doublechecking the following points, to ensure they are handling legal tender. What to look for isn’t difficult

because the paper is unique, with an unmistakable feel, and the note must be firm. Bear in mind that when looking at the note, while holding it up to the light, you should see a small portrait in what looks like a little window, as well as the watermark and the security thread. There is a silver band on the other side of the note, as well as a portrait of Europe in the transparent window, along with an emerald-green number, with a distinguishable, vertical, metallic reflection. If a specific device is needed to validate the note, a special design will be seen through UV lighting.

Spain’s first Drug-gang couple were robot-run sniffed out by cop dog restaurant All hands to the pots… especially in restaurants

SPANISH robots are being prepared to branch out into food and drink, when the country’s first restaurant, run entirely by machines, opens in Madrid this year. The opening follows similar moves in Japan, China and the US, and, says Marius Robles, founder of the Food by Robots and Reimagine Food, robots are being used in more than

500 restaurants across the world. Robles said robots would have a “decisive” influence on the restaurant industry in the years ahead. They will become more widespread as the technology gets cheaper. But Robles, speaking at the Hospitality Innovation Planet Horeca Professional Expo, added: “The creative side of cooking is hard to automate.”

TWO men in the Novelda area of Alicante, arrested by Guardia Civil officers, backed up by a sniffer dog, were suspected of counterfeiting currency, drug-trafficking and belonging to a criminal group.

During a raid on their properties, 2,150 euros in legal tender and 30 grams of cocaine were recovered, as well as various types of narcotics.

The officers, who had earlier been carrying out a routine checkpoint in the area, were immediately suspicious of the vehicle, and its occupants. The Spanish suspects, aged 46 and 43, were searched at the scene, and then taken to the local Guardia Civil for further investigation. In addition to other officers being involved in the search, the sniffer dog proved his worth by uncovering 100,000 euros in cash, hidden inside the vehicle in batches of counterfeit 500-euro notes. The ultra-suspicious officers also requested a search of the detainees’ homes, in

the Alicante town of Pinoso, where they also seized 30 grams of cocaine in rock, marijuana and hashish. There were also substances for cutting cocaine, as well as tools for weighing and packaging the drug, in addition to several stateof-the-art, mobile terminals, and another vehicle. The two men, charged with the crimes of belonging to a criminal group, currency forgery and a crime against public health (drugtrafficking), have already been made available to the judicial authority, who remanded them into prison.

A FRESH batch of Brexit rumours and speculation are helping the pound to hold near its recent highs, this week so far, meaning sterling could end February near its best levels, all month.

Weak, Eurozone data has made it easier for GBP/EUR to hold above the level of €1.15, with EUR/GBP floundering in the region of £0.86. GBP/USD has returned to above the level of $1.30, and is edging closer to $1.31. Meanwhile, US dollar weakness is making it easier for EUR/USD to recover from mid-February lows of $1.12, and the pair

Pound avoids losses on Brexit-delay rumours

is trending near $1.13. The pound has rebounded towards the end of February, as speculation of a breakthrough in UK-EU negotiations, and rumours that Brexit could be delayed by as much as two years, bolstered hopes that a nodeal Brexit could be avoided. This was despite news that the next Parliament vote on Brexit had been delayed until 12th March, a mere 17 days before the current Brexit date of 29th March. Brexit hopes made it easier for the pound to register gains versus the euro, which has been weighed down by worsening signs of economic slowdown in Germany. However, both the pound and euro have been able to climb versus the US dollar, over the past week. The US dollar is a safe-haven currency, so investors have been selling it, as US-China trade developments make

promising developments. With trade jitters lightening, investors are more willing to take risks, instead. Once again, the next meaningful parliamentary vote, on UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plan, has been delayed. Previously set for this week, it will now take place on 12th March. Being so close to the formal Brexit date, the pound will be even more sensitive to the possibility of a no-

deal Brexit, or rumours of a delay. This is likely to lead to pound volatility, and reactions to any noteworthy Brexit news. With the euro weighed by Eurozone growth concerns, upcoming German inflation and job market data is likely to be influential for the shared currency, this week. Now that a delay to the USChina negotiation deadline has been confirmed, riskon movement may not rise

much further, and this could leave the US dollar reacting to US data. The US dollar could see stronger demand, if upcoming US factory data impresses investors, or if the Federal Reserve takes a more-hawkish stance in its monetary-policy outlook, during this week’s Congressional testimonies. They’re certainly not the cream of the crop

Spain’s Interior Minister, Fernándo Grande-Marlaska

THE Spanish Interior Ministry has released a new, counterterrorism strategy, which targets jihadism.

It focuses, specifically, on former members of the socalled Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda, returning from conflict zones, and prisons, in which petty criminals become radicalised, as well as homegrown terrorist cells, such as the one which perpetrated the 2017 Barcelona attack. The greatest threat to Spain, says the Interior Ministry, “is the activity of actors and cells, radicalised by themselves in Spanish territory”. But the text’s primary focus is on the fight against

jihadist terrorism, particularly addressing the return of former ISIS and Al Qaeda fighters. Most of these jihadists left their homes, principally in Madrid, Catalonia and Spain’s North African exclave cities Ceuta and Melilla, to fight in conflict zones like Syria and Iraq. Given the US decision to end its military mission in Syria, many of them are now expected to return to Spain. To counter this threat on their return, Interior Minister Fernándo Grande-Marlaska wants to send the former fighters to prison. But counter-terrorism sources recognise this will be difficult, given that they can only be prosecuted now, for joining a terrorist organisation.

To overcome this, the counter-terrorism strategy proposes to incorporate evidence provided by the troops of other countries, be it DNA samples or documents, into court proceedings in Spain. This would enable Spanish prosecutors to charge the former fighters with participating in specific acts of terrorism, which, until now, has not been possible, because of a lack of evidence. The document also points out: “Most of the terrorist attacks committed in Europe were done by people radicalised in their own countries,” as demonstrated with the Barcelona and Cambrils terrorist attacks in August 2017.

JUST 970 Spaniards have responded to 23,000 job offers to pick strawberries in Andalucia’s Huelva, despite the province having the third-highest unemployment rate in Spain. Fruit-growers are having to look abroad for workers to fill the labour gap. Last month, plans were set in motion to hire more than 19,000 seasonal workers from north Africa, to help harvest strawberries and other berries. Huelva is the soft fruit and berry capital of Europe, last year producing 280,300 tons of strawberries, 19,170 tons of raspberries, 38,000 tons of blueberries and 1,800 of blackberries, worth a total of 437.2m euros. Just over 11,464 hectares are dedicated to growing berries in plastic tunnels, with strawberries taking up around 6,000 hectares. After a slow beginning this year, farmers producing strawberries for export across Europe said they needed 19,179 extra pairs of hands, at least by the end of March, to cope with the harvest. Some 11,500 of these workers

will have picked berries in Huelva before, while others will be first-timers. Union sources told local media that they were extremely disappointed with the poor response rate from Huelva’s workshy residents, with unemployment in the province reaching 22.79%. Only Badajoz and Cadiz have higher rates of joblessness, with 24.10% and 27.35% respectively. Pay for picking strawberries ranges from €30 to €42 per day, and the work is mostly carried out by Moroccan women, who work at least 39 hours per week, sometimes 10 hours more. Last year, the Andalusian Employment Service offered 11,000 fruit-picking jobs, but the response from job-seekers in Spain was just as bad, with under 1,000 people taking up the opportunity. In total, producers’ association Freshuelva estimates that 80,000 workers will be needed this year to pick the wide varieties of berries in Huelva, and the majority of those will almost certainly be migrants.

Soft Cell: Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Friday 1st March, BBC4, 21.00

2018 marked the 40th anniversary of Soft Cell, one of the most charismatic bands in the history of popular music. To celebrate this landmark, Marc Almond and Dave Ball reunited for an emotional farewell concert at London’s O2 Arena that September. With unprecedented access, this film provides an intimate portrait of the band, following rehearsals as well as footage from the actual concert, woven in with archive and music videos. The film covers Marc’s formative years growing up in Southport and Dave’s in nearby Blackpool, and how the two met as art students at Leeds Polytechnic in the late 1970s. Marc and Dave perform in The Fenton pub in Leeds, where the band played their first ever paid gig. They perform an early Soft Cell song, A Man Could Get Lost, on Dave’s original keyboards. Soft Cell burned brightly between 1981 and 1984, after their gritty but stunning cover version of Tainted Love became a massive hit, the best-selling single in the UK of 1981 and a number 1 hit in 15 other countries, including the USA. Soft Cell were always more interested in using their success to subvert the mainstream than becoming pop stars, as they tell us in relation to Marc’s ground-breakingly androgynous debut on Top Of The Pops. It was the beginning of a career that defied convention. Soft Cell were influenced as much by punk as Northern Soul and Kraftwerk, bringing a punk ethos to synth-pop. In their heyday, the pair produced top ten singles and three classic albums, selling 10m records overall. Soft Cell’s approach was more sophisticated than the press gave them credit for. Their first album, Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, saw them labelled as sleazy, when in reality it deliberately used the setting of Soho to explore the sexual undercurrents of British society. Bedsitter explored the escapism from the grim realities of Thatcher’s Britain for many, while Say Hello, Wave Goodbye was about a powerful man breaking off an affair with a call-girl. Soft Cell’s second, darker, album was called The Art Of Falling Apart, and was recorded in New York. The duo immersed themselves into the underground club scene, which informed songs such as Heat And Numbers, a song that reflected promiscuity in the gay scene. The pressures they felt to produce more commercial music began to take its toll and they discuss how they began to slip into the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, by becoming addicted to drugs. By 1983, before the recording of their album This Last Night In Sodom, the duo had decided to split as otherwise, as Dave puts it, “one of us wasn’t going to make it”. Following their separation in 1984 Marc sold an estimated 20m records as a solo artist. The film includes Marc at the Moulin Rouge in Paris exploring his love of French chansons, and with Jools Holland, as Marc has recorded an album with him and the Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. We also look at Dave’s solo career with the successful dance duo The Grid. The documentary ends with the duo’s rousing performance of Say Hello, Wave Goodbye at the O2.

Best House In Town BBC1, 15.45

All of this week’s winners will go head to head in the final to find out who has the best house in Leicester. The winning homes from the four categories - best detached, best semi-detached, best terrace and best wildcard property – are revisited by the local judges. They’ll be given new insight into these magnificent homes while their owners get one last chance to impress. Will electrician Phil be able to consider anything for its artist merits? Can kitchen designer Joel be swayed by sentimental pieces in the home? And will interior designer Pam be impressed by the homeowners colour choices? At the end of the day this group of knowledgeable property aficionados must make their decision and crown one of these homes The Best House in Town! The Best House In Town is produced by Sidney Street. The Executive Producers are Karen Ross and Lucy Shepherd. The BBC Commissioning Editor is Carla-Maria Lawson.

Parveen’s Indian Kitchen ITV1, 09.30

Parveen makes a one-pot chicken pilau rice, with a tasty mango chutney. In India, we’re in Rajasthan, where we take a trip out into the countryside with the Outlanders, two friends who show us two of their favourite local recipes as well as an unusual fuel source. Plus, we meet up with the Cauldron Sisters, who conjure up a couple of Rajasthani recipes for their family and friends. Back in the UK, Parveen shares her top pantry tips, this time it’s the key utensils to help you whip up her easy Indian recipes. In the kitchen, Parveen makes mango mess, her take on Eton mess using some juicy mangos and a sprinkle of cardamom, a perfect dessert for any Indian meal. Plus, executive chef Prasad Metrani at the Fairmount Hotel in Jaipur cooks up a historical recipe on the hotels roof terrace. And, as part of her journey of regional Indo-culinary discovery, Parveen visits London-based restaurant Cinnamon Kitchen and award-winning chef Vivek Singh. Vivek shows Parveen how his Indian roots are influencing his modern take on Indian cuisine.

From established stand up routines by some of the nation’s best loved comedians, to brand new material from Britain’s most exciting up and coming talent. The Stand Up Sketch Show is doing what no comedy has ever done before! Each sketch begins with a comedian telling their story on stage in front of a live audience, before shifting into a surreal reconstruction of the material. Using some of the circuit’s funniest material, the reconstructions will feature visual jokes, supporting performances, ridiculous props and absolutely killer comedy. In each of the sketches the comedian will play the role they were born to play…themselves. Any dialogue in the routines will be lip-synced by the comedians and comedy actors adding to the surreal tone of each scene. With 8-10 sketches per episode, each one will vary in length and be fast paced and funny with a ton of additional gags to make sure the laughs keep coming thick and fast. The Stand Up Sketch Show will add a new dimension to routines from established names as well as brand new material from rapidly rising stars on the comedy scene. This week includes: Russell Kane, Alfie Brown, George Lewis, Marlon Davis, Fern Brady, Suzi Ruffell, Seann Walsh

Casualty and Holby Crossover Special. For the first time since 2005, the cast of Holby City and Casualty will join forces for a two-part crossover special on BBC One, as the staff of the emergency department and the wards come together when Holby City Hospital is plunged into chaos. Characters from both series will interact as their storylines are intertwined across the two dramatic, action-packed episodes. A major cyber-attack plunges Holby into blackout and disables most of the hospital’s automated monitoring equipment. At the same time Sacha (Bob Barrett) is in a car crash which injures his daughter Bekka (Francesca Barrett) and Ric’s (Hugh Quarshie) granddaughter Darla (Naomi Katiyo), one of whom might be pregnant. Fighting a different battle among the chaos, Connie (Amanda Mealing) is left to save the life of a member of her own team with surgery. As Sasha’s injuries become apparent, Jac (Rosie Marcel) comes to his rescue and is ready to operate - but with only one theatre available in the blackout, Connie and Jac have to make an impossible decision - which of their friends to try to save first.

The Parkinson’s Drug Trial: A Miracle Cure? c h o i c e BBC2, 21.00

So far the volunteers have been split into two groups, with half receiving GDNF (glial-cell derived neurotrophic factor - a naturally occurring protein found in our brains) and half a placebo. Delivered through a revolutionary port in the side of their heads, no one knows who is receiving the active drug in their monthly infusions. Assessments show significant improvement in some and there is renewed optimism at the half-way point of the trial as all the volunteers start receiving GDNF. “It wasn’t considered ethical to put people through brain surgery without ever giving them a chance to have the drug,” explains the trial’s leader, Doctor Alan Whone. This epdisode reveals some remarkable improvements. Darren Calder, 51, from Wiltshire, can put on his own socks in the morning for the first time in years. In Glasgow, 44 year old Bryn Williams’ tremor completely disappears. In Cornwall, Kay Cotton, 58, feels like she’s been cured. “It’s amazing, it’s like I’m 100 percent better.” Whilst Vicki Dillon, 47, from Tyneside, calls it “a bloody miracle.”

Benidorm knife Brits stab four club-goers

TWO young Brits were arrested in Benidorm last Sunday night, after four people were stabbed during a fight, which had spilled on to the street from a club on the resort’s main strip.

The shocking incident, at around 10.30, saw the pair, aged 20 and 21, knife the

club-goers, leaving them “in a serious condition”. Two of the victims are believed to be working at the popular bar, on Calle Mallorca. The suspects were set to appear at a private court hearing, earlier this week. The National Police said: “Two people, workers at the place where the incident happened, suffered what appeared to be stab wounds.”

Benidorm Holidays Ltd wrote on social media: “At this time, Benidorm Strip has been closed and sealed off, due to a serious stabbing attack.” The company later added: “At this time there have been no confirmed deaths as yet, and the main Strip is no longer sealed off. But people are still seriously hurt.” One witness said: “I was here tonight and seeing it all was horrific.”

Doctors launch three-year plan to see off Hepatitis C ACCORDING to the World Health Organisation (WHO), there is no current vaccine for Hepatitis C. Yet, in Spain, a drug has been deployed since 2015 to treat over 120,000 people.

And doctors in Spain have now launched an ambitious plan to eradicate Hepatitis C in just three years. Experts have created a 10-point strategy to treat the 70,000-to-100,000 Spaniards, unaware they have the bloodborne virus. The move is an attempt to meet the WHO requirements, which stipulate that Hepatitis C must be eliminated by 2021. To reach those most at risk, scientists have formed the Alliance for the Elimination of Viral Hepatitis (Aehve), which has now identified three groups most at risk: drug addicts and gay men having unprotected sex, along with those immigrants

from countries with high prevalence rates. The (Aehve) says its plan allows scientists to “get close” to achieving the WHO’s three-year goal, even though the World Organisation is adamant that there is no current vaccine for Hepatitis C, despite Spain’s proof that its drug has treated over 120,000 people in the past three years. The direct-acting, antiviral treatment, rolled out in 2015, has achieved a 95% success

rate! And, said Aehve coordinator Javier GarcíaSamaniego, when Spain’s plan was launched: “We are world leaders in this field. “We have a history of success, but we also have to bear in mind that people are still dying from this illness.” The Aehve scientists have recommended that nonmedical institutions should refer Hepatitis C sufferers, including mental-health centres, NGOs and social services.

Horrific US Government experiments on children and orphans in the 1940s

A FEDERAL judge recently approved a $1bn lawsuit against Johns Hopkins University, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co (BMY.N) and the Rockefeller Foundation. It seeks restitution for victims who were infected, intentionally, with syphilis during government experiments in Guatemala during the 1940s. Hundreds of Guatemalans were, reportedly, infected with syphilis during the studies, which were designed to test the ability of penicillin to treat sexually-transmitted diseases. The lawsuit was pending and waiting in limbo for the past four years, until, finally, it was approved by US District Judge Theodore Chuang last month. In 2015, when the lawsuit was originally filed, there were 750 victims seeking restitution, but now there are just 444 plaintiffs, and some remaining relatives. The test subjects in the experiments were mainly children, orphans, patients from mental hospitals and inmates. These horrific studies remained a secret until 2010, when Dr Susan Reverby, of Wellesley College, Massachusetts, uncovered details of the experiment, forcing a formal apology from Barack Obama, the then President. Reverby learned of the experiments after the death of

John Charles Cutler, one of the study’s lead researchers. Cutler left behind a stack of files, containing details of the barbaric experiments. When the story went public, the Meridian 361 International Law Group issued a graphic description of the experiments in a press release announcing the lawsuit, which makes for grotesque reading. Researchers from these very same organisations were involved in similar experiments in different locations, most notably the Tuskegee experiments. These were nearly identical to those conducted in Guatemala, but, in this case, poor African-American sharecroppers were target-ed. The organisations involved with the experiments deny any wrong-doing, and say they intend to fight the lawsuit. In a recent statement, Johns Hopkins expressed “profound sympathy for individuals and families impacted by the deplorable 1940s syphilis study, funded and conducted by the US Government in Guatemala. “We respect the legal process, and we will continue to vigorously defend the lawsuit.” A Rockefeller Foundation spokesman told Reuters that the lawsuit had “no merit”, and that they had no knowledge that these studies were taking place. Many Guatemalans are still dealing with the painful aftermath of these experiments.

Paternity leave to equal maternity in two years PATERNITY leave will rise to three months from next year, and to four months from 1st January 2021, if the existing socialist government wins the election next month.

It means then, that men and women will be able to take the same time off from their jobs, with full pay, after the birth, adoption or fostering of each of their children. At present, maternity leave is 16 weeks, and paternity leave half of that, during which employees receive 100% of their salary. The self-employed, around one-third of Spain’s workforce in Spain, earn just €500 to €600 a month, and their situation is not expected to change in the foreseeable future. Until the beginning of last year, paternity leave was just two weeks, meaning two-dad families had only a month between them to care for their

new infant, before having to return to work. But that will rise to 12 weeks from next year, and then to 16 weeks the following year, in line with maternity leave. The Government’s aim is for mums and dads to share childcare, since, with women

having considerably more time off than men, mothers have tended to become the primary care-givers by default. And that situation often remains unchanged for months, if not years, reducing women’s chances at

Another police plea to find missing boy

ALEX Batty, a British boy who vanished in Malaga with his mother, Melanie, and grandad David, is still missing, following his 13th birthday. His mum and grandad are both wanted in connection with Alex’s abduction, and the police are again appealing to the public for help, some 17 months later. Melanie is not the teenager’s legal guardian, despite taking him for a holiday in Spain on 30th September 2017, with his grandad. After a week’s holiday at Benahavis, in the Malaga province, the Oldham family were scheduled to return home a week later. Police investigations revealed that

the trio might have tried to make the journey from Malaga Port to Melilla on the same date. DC Declan O’Reilly, of Oldham Police, said: “I would urge people to keep him in their mind as his grandmother, family and friends here in Oldham have celebrated another one of his birthdays without him.” The detective constable described Alex’s grandmother, Susan Caruana, as “absolutely desperate” to get her grandson back, and asked the public to get in touch with any information they may have. Alex is slim, white, with blond hair, about 5ft, and has a northern accent. The public can contact police on 0161 856 2234 (+44 161 856 8934 if you are abroad) or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

returning to work on a level playing field, and being able to make career progress. From the first day of year 2021, parents can either take their leave together or separately, but one parent cannot transfer his or hers to the other.

The first six weeks start immediately, at the time of birth, and the remaining 10 can either continue to give 16 uninterrupted weeks, or be distributed over the first year of parenthood. It can even be taken hourly, which means that both parents can return to work part-time, after the first six weeks, and work their hours around each other for childcare purposes. Maternity and paternity leave can be extended if the newborn has to remain in hospital after the birth, for as long as the baby stays there, up to a 13-week maximum, on top of standard leave. The changes apply to both employee sectors, private and public. Companies of more than 50 workers will have one year to draw up and apply an equality plan, to include checkable measures to remove all obstacles to full gender parity. It is an obligation that currently applies only to firms with 250 or more employees.

K9 Animal News LAST November, it was a typical day at K9. The kennels had been cleaned, the dogs were fed and walked, and they were starting to settle for the night.

Fiona, at K9, tells the story: “The front gate opened, and a young couple came in with a small dog. She was introduced to me as Scrappy, and she automatically tugged at my heart strings. Because of personal circumstances, this young couple had to surrender Scrappy to K9, and there were tears all around when the realisation hit that they were leaving her. “It was a very tough decision for them. When they left, we settled Scrappy into one of our kennels, and, of course, this little girl was very confused and a bit fearful. She was defensive, and barked and growled at first. She had no idea why she was suddenly left at K9. “The next day, one of our volunteers took her for a walk, and her personality began to shine brightly. “Scrappy is a terrier mix and is 10 years old. She currently shares a kennel with three, much younger dogs. Despite her age, she still runs and acts like a young dog, and has so much love and affection for us here. She is still a bit wary

Thank you, everyone! Hi - I’m Foxy DESPITE the hot weather, our campaign to adopt a dog, and not buy, was greatly supported.

Many of the lovely dogs in our care got to have a walk down to the sea, all sporting their green neckerchieves. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed a well-deserved cool-off in the sea, before gently strolling back to the refuge. We’d like to say a big thank-you to our loyal supporters, for joining us. Sad news On a sadder note, two of the eight puppies which were dumped in a plastic bucket didn’t survive, after all our efforts to save them. The remaining six are on the road to recovery, and, once they are fit and healthy, and have had all the necessary injections etc., they will be available for adoption. We do not charge for adopting a dog, and every animal is fully vaccinated, microchipped and sterilised, but a donation is welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can

help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here

THIS is our lovely Foxy. He is seven years old, and has spent five of those years in the dog shelter. It’s time for him to live in a real home. He is an amazing sweetheart, and good with all people, children and female dogs. He is a really happy soul, and a perfect home would be where he could run a lot, and discover the world. He is very intelligent and knows how to escape by himself, so a place with a good fence would be needed. Why not take him for a walk at the Saturday-morning walking club, or call Marc on 652 297 853, to arrange to meet him. Lovely pups available We have seven, small handfuls at the shelter, four of which were abandoned in a cave, while the other three were left to starve in an unoccupied property. Thankfully, they were heard crying and were rescued. They will be medium-sized dogs when grown. Please come along to the dog-walking club and meet them, or contact Oceana on 659 242 572, if you would like to see them, with a view to adoption. Come and walk the doggies! Wine and Dine

1st March 2019 - 7th March 2019 Tim has been working at The Swan, owned by Tony, Angela and Anthony, for four and half years, and came up with the idea for the roof-top to be used for a more-intimate experience. He uses his experience as a chef and flambé chef, in his previous job, to create interesting dishes. Our evening started with a welcome glass of blue fizz. This intriguing sweet, blue, fizzy wine was just enough to get the taste buds going. Next came a beef carpaccio, and a garlic, tomato and cheese bruschetta. The soft beef was complemented by salty parmesan, ground pepper and a squeeze of lemon, and went perfectly with the crunch of the cheesy bruschetta. As the next course was being cooked, the beautiful garlicky smells filled the terrace. The seared scallops were cooked to perfection, with just the right hint of garlic and fresh coriander, and were accompanied by a light, crisp, dressed salad.

As our plates were swiftly removed, we ordered a bottle of Torres wine to accompany our next course. Now came the drama of the ever-popular flambé. Tim expertly poured Jack Daniels over the marinated beef, and, no sooner had the flames subsided, the well-presented dish of beef, courgette and mushroom, with a spicy sauce, arrived at our table. This delicious meal, even though I was starting to get full, left me wanting to try more flavours. I was not disappointed. The last of the savoury courses was Cajun-style cod, served

with vegetable rice. This beautiful soft fish, with a sweet, vinegar reduction, was just “melt in the mouth”. There were certainly no Oliver-Twist-style pleas for more with this venue there was always more to come. Last, but not least, Cointreau sorbet with fresh fruit was brought to the table. Not usually keen on alcohol in a dessert, I was not particularly looking forward to this. But I gave it a try, and, wow, the word that sprung to mind was zing! Before I knew it, and with a little bit of brain freeze, I admit my glass was empty.

The menu itself was worth every cent. Coupled with reasonable bar prices, it made for an affordable evening which was more than just eating. A whole feast, with so many flavours and tastes, created a personal dining experience and memorable night, all made possible by Anthony and Charlotte, who were working downstairs, and Tim and Joey, with their friendly, smooth service. Check out the menus at The Swan, or in the local press, for the Monday-night menu, because, from week to week, they have different experiences.

Tea’s berry good for us

By Val Sainsbury TEA and berries have a lot in common. These superfoods are not just good for overall health, they are particularly essential in preventing heart disease.

One study highlights the importance of daily consumption of tea and berries in preventing heart disease. The secret to this mechanism lies in the natural compounds found in these foods called flavonoids, which have been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease. Inflammation is a known risk factor for heart disease, and flavonoids have been found to possess potent antiinflammatory properties. Flavonoids can be found in many foods, such as chocolate and red wine, but the study focused on the consumption of tea and berries. In the study, the research team analysed data from nearly 53,000 people who

had participated in the long-running Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study, which began in the 1990s. The participants were tasked to answer a questionnaire on what types of foods they ate, and how often they ate them. The researchers then tracked the participants’ health for more than 20 years. After the 23-year follow-up period, the researchers found that around 12,000 of the participants had developed some type of heart condition. The researchers found that people who reported eating

around 500 mg or more of flavonoid-rich foods daily, had a lower risk of developing ischaemic heart disease, stroke and peripheral artery disease. In their analysis, the researchers found that the association between flavonoids and lower risk of heart disease varied for different groups of people. For instance, people who smoked and drank alcohol, as well as men in general, needed more than 500 mg of flavonoids a day, for the link to be apparent. However, these groups

displayed the strongest link between flavonoid intake and a significant reduction in risk. The researchers further observed that people who tended to eat lots of fruits and vegetables generally had better diets, eating fewer processed foods that are associated with heart disease. It may seem a lot, but 500 mg is very easy to eat in one day. You can easily obtain this amount of flavonoids in a cup of tea and a handful of berries. Here are some of the best berries to add to your daily

diet. *Blueberries: These (along with other blue and purple fruits and vegetables) get their colour from antioxidants called anthocyanins, which reduce oxidative stress. These lower heart-disease risk in both healthy and high-risk people *Raspberries: A favourite in dessert recipes, raspberries are rich in polyphenols called ellagitannins, which also reduce oxidative stress. Black raspberries may be especially good for your heart, reducing heart-disease risk factors, such as blood pressure and blood cholesterol *Strawberries: If you love to snack on strawberries, you’re already doing your heart a huge favour. Studies have highlighted their heartfriendly properties, such as lowering inflammatory chemicals in the blood, and controlling heart-disease factors like blood cholesterol, triglycerides and oxidative stress *Cranberry juice: Studies have found that cranberry juice may shield your heart from cholesterol, blood pressure, oxidative stress, and “stiffness” of arteries *Bilberry juice: Juicing bilberries can reduce inflammation in people at risk of heart disease, or metabolic syndrome.

Green’s the word for health CHILDREN who grow up with greener surroundings have up to 55% less risk of developing various mental disorders, later in life. This is shown by a new study from Aarhus University, Denmark, emphasising the need for designing green-andhealthy cities, for the future. A larger and larger share of the world’s population now lives in cities, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that more than 450 million of the global human population suffer from a mental disorder, a number that is expected to

increase. Now, based on satellite data from 1985 to 2013, researchers from Aarhus University have mapped the presence of green space around the childhood homes of almost one million Danes, and compared this data with the risk of develop-

ing one of 16 different mental disorders, later in life. The study shows that children surrounded by the high amounts of green space in childhood have up to a 55% lower risk of developing a mental disorder, even after adjusting for other known risk factors such as socio-economic status, urbanisation, and the family history of mental disorders. Aarhus University’s Kristine Engemann, who spearheaded the study, says: “Our data is unique. We have had the opportunity to use a massive amount of data from Danish registers of, among other things, residential location and disease diagnoses, and compare it with satellite images revealing the extent of green space surrounding each individ-

ual, when growing up.” Researchers know that, for example, noise, air pollution, infections and poor socio-economic conditions increase the risk of developing a mental disorder. Conversely, other studies have shown that more green space in the local area creates greater social cohesion and increases people’s physical activity level, and can improve children’s cognitive development. These are all factors that may have an impact on people’s mental health. “With our dataset, we show that the risk of de-

veloping a mental disorder decreases, incrementally, the longer you have been surrounded by green space from birth, and up to the age of 10. Green space throughout childhood is therefore extremely important,” Kristine Engemann explains. As the researchers adjusted for other known risk factors of developing a mental disorder, they see their findings as a robust indication of a close relationship between green space, urban life, and mental disorders. Kristine says: “There is increasing evidence that

the natural environment plays a larger role for mental health than previously thought. Our study is vital in giving us a better understanding of its importance across the broader population.” This knowledge has important implications for sustainable urban planning, not least because an ever-increasing proportion of the world’s population lives in cities. “The coupling between mental health and access to green space in your local area is something that should be considered even more in urban planning, to ensure greener and healthier cities, and improve mental health of urban residents in the future,” adds co-author Professor Jens-Christian Svenning, from the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University.

CD Tenerife A LAST-GASP goal from Tyronne, with a little help from Mallorcan defender Raillo, enabled a Tenerife team, with more attitude than game, to rescue a point.

It earned them justice in a match controlled by Mallorca until they forgot to play football. The Balearic team wanted to win by running down the clock with feigned injuries and timewasting. But, ultimately, they received just punishment for their pettiness. It was no secret that Tenerife had to win this game, or at least not lose, to take advantage of the home form which has saved them so far this season. They certainly tried, having 64% of the possession, 20 shots, and over 200 more passes than Mallorca. But it’s goals that count, and they have been few and far between for the home side, and Mallorca made the few chances they had count. Tenerife started with rhythm, coach Oltra playing the same team who lost to Cádiz the week before. And Milla had the opening shot in the first minute, forcing a good save from keeper Reina, then Borja shot over the bar six minutes later. Mallorca didn’t appear to be a danger, beyond a deviated header from Aridai that didn’t bother Dani. But when Alberto lost the ball in midfield, it was picked up by Lago Junior and crossed to Estupiñán, who placed the ball past keeper Dani from 20 yards, to put the visitors ahead after 15 minutes. It stunned Tenerife, who only awoke towards the end of

the first half. They forced an amazing volume of pressure, monopolising the ball and firing numerous crosses into the area. But they took 37 minutes to raise a threat, when Lasso fed Malbasic, who couldn’t get it past the outstretched hand of Reina. On the other hand, Mallorca’s lone attack produced a shot from Aridai, which was saved by Dani. Whatever Oltra said to his men at half-time did nothing to prevent the comedy of errors, which launched the second half! Jorge played an innocent back-pass to his keeper, who slipped and fell over before he could get to the ball, leaving the goal wide open for striker Budimir to tap it into an open net for a 2-0 lead. It must surely be footage you’ll see on social media and YouTube for years to come. This time, Tenerife heads did

not go down, and, with the crowd behind them, they went on an all-out offensive. Malbasic hit the bar in the 52nd minute, Reina saved a good shot from him in the 57th, Lasso missed a close-range header in

Cycling

the 60th, and Racic had a good chance saved in the 66th. In the 72nd minute, Tenerife had a free-kick, 35 yards out, which was floated in by Luis Milla. It appeared to have been

dealt with by Mallorca’s defence, but Racic had different ideas, striking the ball home from 12 yards to offer hope for Tenerife with 18 minutes remaining, and the home crowd right behind them. As Mallorca attempted to play out the game for the points, Estupiñán went from goal hero to zero in the 86th minute, when his clumsy clash with Suso earned him a second yellow card and a sending-off, giving the home team even more incentive for the final minutes. As time ran out, and fingernails became shorter, belief turned into justice with almost the last touch of the match. A hopeful long ball was headed back into the danger area by Isma López, which Tyronne took on his chest, controlled and shot from the same spot as Racic. But this time the ball was not on target, until a huge deflection from Mallorca defender Raillo, who knew nothing about it, flew past Reina to make it 2-2 in the dying seconds of an exhilarating match. The expression, “it’s not over until the final whistle”, was a lesson for Mallorca, and apt for Tenerife, who earned a well-deserved point. Let’s hope they take this attitude and momentum away to bottom club Reus on Sunday. They really need their first away win of the season, to close the gap on those above them.

Swift not quick enough to dodge a rock BEN SWIFT, a racing cyclist with Team Sky, clipped a rock while in training, descending a Tenerife road with reigning Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas, which led to a crash that sent him to hospital. A team announcement said that 31-year-old Swift had not broken any bones. but he

suffered multiple contusions and an injury to his spleen, which was causing bleeding. But doctors were able to stabilise that injury. A statement from the team management said: “A procedure was performed to reduce the risks of this bleeding starting again, and Swift will remain in close observation for the next few days.” “Swifty suffered quite a heavy crash while out training,” said team doctor Inigo Sarriegui. “Thankfully, though, he didn’t lose

consciousness, and was aware of the incident afterwards. “We will continue to monitor him over the coming days, but, 24 hours on from the crash, he is already feeling better.” Swift, a reliable team domestique, already has two races under his belt this year: the recent Tour de la Provence in France, and, prior to that, the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, in which he was third in Stage 2, and went on to complete the race.

Champs too close to call THERE was an unusual result when Rob’s Mad Hatters visited The Loch-In. Yes - West Ham actually won a game!

And in a tight match, closer to home, Hatters proved too strong in the trebles against a depleted home side, and clinched a 4-4 draw. The Pub had an easy victory over Scooters ‘A’, romping home 8-0, while Sandys welcomed Suters 20:30 Crew, who were on good form and went home with a 7-1 win. Pas O Nadas ‘A’ again had Daddy Cool and Luc to thank for their 180s, as they strolled to a similar win over Ourplace Playboys, for whom Nathan won the point. Pas O Nadas top the table at this stage, but, with just only a couple

of games to go, the chasing Suters and The Pub each have a game in hand, which could help decide the prized trophy’s destination. Fudder hit a maximum in Ourplace Breakaways’ match at Palms Sports Bar. But Chris also scored 180 for the home side, helping them to a 6-2 success. Naughty Nautas and Nauta Nomads played out a well-deserved 4-4 draw, with Nomads taking the team game to claim their share. Clouseau’s travelled to title hopefuls Emerald Lounge ‘B’, and, in a close game, they eventually won the 701 game to square the match. Title contenders The Loch-In Bullseyes visited Ourplace Playgirls, throwing consistently all night to record an important 6-2 victory, to

Splash of silver for Papi, daddy of them all! acrobatic partners

TWO young San Miguel gymnasts have won silver at the Spanish Cup’s Acrobatic Gymnastics championship, in the Galicia area of Marín, Pontevedra.

The junior pair of Veruska Rodríguez and Lidia Jane Edmonds, members of Acro Flyers Tenerife, represented the Canary Islands in Galicia, at an event which attracted nearly 600 gymnasts from 162 teams. And the talented youngsters excelled themselves by achieving a silver medal in their category.

A MULTITUDE of longdistance races, across all terrains, took place in Gran Canaria over four days, ending last Sunday.

And Italian Luca Papi, the most remarkable marathon runner of all, demonstrated just what the

Transgrancanaria was all about. He won the toughest race of all, spread over last Thursday and Friday, and completed the mindboggling, 265km race in 50hrs 14 mins 13secs, at around 11am on Friday morning. Believe it or not, Luca was back on course the same evening for the 128km event, which he also finished. In all,

he covered 393.6 kilometres in a remarkable 77hrs 37hrs 20mins. “He’s living proof that he’s from another planet,” said one admiring organiser. Alongside a children’s race, there were four other categories, comprising events at 65km, 42km, 30km … and a mere 17km, in this leg of the Ultra Trail World Tour.
