Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.5% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. Brexit No-Deal measures will keep all us Brits safe

Continued from Front

It follows last month’s announcement by Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez, and this week’s approval by his ministers, the Consejo de Ministros, of the Royal Decree covering Spain’s Brexit contingency measures. It includes important provisions regarding citizens’ rights and businesses, and Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “The UK Government’s top priority remains securing a deal with the EU that wins the support of the UK parliament. “However, like any responsible government, ours is planning for every eventuality. “It has already announced a series of Brexit No-Deal contingency measures, and has published extensive advice to businesses and citizens. It has also guaranteed the rights of EU nationals living in the UK.” “I am pleased to see the Spanish Government announcing a series of detailed, Brexit contingency measures, should the UK leave without a deal. “The Royal Decree offers important assurances on issues like residency and access to healthcare, for more than 300,000 British nationals who have chosen to make Spain their home, and for the many millions of British tourists who visit Spain each year. “I welcome, too, the announcement on Customs procedures to avoid potential obstacles to the free movement of goods, which will be important to both British and Spanish businesses, who trade in or

between our two countries.” Manley added: “It is also welcome that the Spanish Government has made clear that the measures will apply to Gibraltar, with special consideration for maintaining flows across the border. “This will provide some certainty to citizens and businesses in Gibraltar and Spain, and helps to protect the close, economic and social relationship between the Campo de Gibraltar and Gibraltar.” Health Minister Stephen Hammond said: “This is a positive step forward in securing an agreement, which will enable British expats to access Spanish healthcare in the same way they do now. “This should also give reassurance to the millions of British tourists, who travel to Spain every year using the EHIC scheme, for free or reduced medical costs, if they need to see a doctor or nurse. “Our next priority will be to continue our work with other EU member states, so that healthcare access for all UK and EU nationals are protected in a no-deal scenario.” The British Embassy in Madrid, and our network of consulates, have held over 100 outreach events across Spain in the last two years, to explain the implications of Brexit to UK nationals living here, and to answer their questions. “Through these events, and through our digital channels, we have underlined the importance of British nationals living in Spain being correctly registered. “It has long been the case

that British nationals who live in Spain for more than three months of the year, should hold a certificate of registration from Extranjeria. “Spain announced this week that, through the Royal Decree, UK nationals living in Spain will maintain their legal residence status after 29th March, and that they, and their family members, will have until 31st December 2020 to get a Foreigner’s Identity Card. “Further information on the process for obtaining this card will be released in due course. It is essential that all British nationals living in Spain check their residency status and ensure they are correctly registered. “We have further information on our Living in Spain guide about how to register as a resident, and details of upcoming outreach events. These pages are regularly updated and UK nationals can sign up for email alerts for the guide, to ensure they are informed of the very

Locksmith superglued keyholes, to help trade A LOCKSMITH’S cheeky sales tactics turned out to be the worst form of advertising, because he was arrested, and might have to fork out thousands of euros in compensation. The dodgy trader, based in the Greater Madrid town of Alcorcón, went around sealing up keyholes with superglue, and pasting stickers with his phone number alongside them, advertising his 24-

hour service. Schools, nurseries, shops and even pharmacies, whose management had left their locks “working perfectly the night before”, would return in the morning to find them jammed. They then had to call out locksmiths to take them apart, but, in many cases, not the scoundrel responsible. Once warned, detectives maintained an overnight watch, under cover, across

town, and eventually caught the culprit. He was found carrying two large tubes of extremely strong superglue, plus a roll of stickers, advertising his telephone number and business. The accused, believed to have been charged and then released, could end up with a bill for damage from at least 25 commercial premises and public buildings.

latest information, as soon as it becomes available.” On healthcare, the UK has offered to fund healthcare in Spain for UK nationals, who would benefit from the S1/EHIC schemes, until 31st December 2020 on a reciprocal basis. The UK is also protecting healthcare for Spanish nationals in the UK. Through the Royal Decree, the Spanish Government says it will introduce measures to protect healthcare for UK nationals in Spain, whether they be resident or visiting, utilising the pre-existing reimbursement mechanisms. Under the reimbursement mechanisms, the UK Government paid Spain £250m last year for the healthcare costs of British nationals in Spain, and the Spanish Government paid the £4m for the healthcare costs of Spanish nationals in the UK. Meanwhile, Spanish PM Sánchez has pledged that if the European Union agrees to extend Brexit beyond the 29th March deadline, Spain will not stand in its way. But he is still keen to know what Britain intends to do with

the extra time. “Postponing the uncertainty, indefinitely, by postponing the deadlines, is unreasonable,” he said. Among the battery of measures in the new, “NoDeal Brexit” law, a bilateral agreement between Spain and the UK means British nationals living in Spain will still be able to vote in their local council elections, on 26th May, as will Spaniards living in the UK. A “special raft of assistance” will be in place for Spanish companies and associations involved in export and import, who may be adversely affected by Brexit has been arranged. British nationals, with “permanent” residence of over five years, will have an automatic right to remain in Spain in the event of a nodeal Brexit, and those who have not been in the country that long will be able to acquire settled status after five years. Legal and financial advisors, or gestores, will be able to advise individuals in this respect. Sánchez’s new healthcare law from last July stipulates that medical attention and treatment is free of charge and universal to anyone living in Spain, legally or not. The deal Theresa May is attempting to get through Parliament includes a bilateral agreement on healthcare for British pensioners living in Spain: the UK will continue to pay, per head, a sum to Spain to cover treatment. But if Britain crashes out without a deal, this will not apply, although Sánchez stated months ago that nobody would be excluded from free healthcare if they were resident in the country. It’s a pledge which also covers “illegal” immigrants.

Drink-driver woman held on to rental car A WOMAN, aged 33, was tracked down by the Gran Canaria National Police after being reported by a rent-acar company for not returning a vehicle. She was driving the car with three people in it when police spotted her and started to follow her. When she realised she was being followed, the woman tried to flee, but she was apprehended by the Local Police, who were requested to assist. It turned out that the woman, who failed a breath-test, already had a criminal record. She was promptly arrested and charged with misappropriation. She is also awaiting a court hearing for drink-driving.

“THE Canary Islands must take advantage of its competitive advantage as a world reference point for freight traffic,” said Mariano Rajoy, just a year ago, at the inauguration of the industrial Granadilla Port.

It was a statement in which the then Prime Minister announced a 10% reduction of the import duty in Spanish ports. The presence of the PM in the south of Tenerife, accompanied by the Minister of Development, Íñigo de la Serna, was to emphasise Spain’s commitment to the new port, located at a strategic point: at the confluence of two of the largest international maritime routes, East-West, which connects the coast of Asia with the American Atlantic through the Suez Canal and the Strait of Gibraltar; and that of North-South, which unites the north of Europe with the South American continent on one hand, and with the Asian on the other, through the Indian route. The inauguration of the Granadilla port, attended by 100 institutional representatives, including the President of the Canary Islands Government, as well as deputies, senators, councillors, and chiefs of the State security forces, was held on a day in which the weather conditions did not help, a strong, south wind causing high waves inside the dock. Rajoy recalled that a total of 362 million euros would be invested in the port, of which 200 had already been executed, 67 of them contributed by the European Cohesion Funds. The inauguration took place 17 years after the Ministry of Public Works gave its approval to the plans, which, together with the Vilaflor power

line, provoked Tenerife’s biggest social protests for decades. In one of his last interviews as President of the Granadilla Environmental Observatory, ecologist Antonio Machado

said the debate on the environmental impact of the work had been magnified, and the then president of the Port Authority, Richard Melchior, came to refer to its construction as the “most

monitored work in Europe”. A year has passed, and the southern facilities have not yet been completed, but the tender for work has now been submitted, for two main areas. Firstly, a 9,093,304-euro contract has been signed for building a protection dam, upon which the seafront wharf will be built. This will be 1,013 metres long and constructed with materials excavated from other areas of the industrial estate, following an agreement signed between the provincial port entity and the Poligono Industrial de Granadilla society, with a completion time of 14 months. The other is the first phase, with the construction of five roads and a new roundabout, in

addition to the adaptation of the two existing ones. The tender for these works is 13,159,547 euros, with a completion time of 18 months, including supply networks, rainwater drainage, sanitation (with pumping stations and the provisional sewage-treatment plant), medium-and-low voltage networks, public lighting, telecommunications and new access control to the port area. For Pedro Suárez, President of Puertos de Tenerife, beyond the “transcendental” importance for the operation of Granadilla Port, “having the riverbank quay operational will also assist in relocating resources from the Santa Cruz port installation, where spaces can be released”.

Mojon Hospital soon to include obstectric area THE Hospital del Sur (El Mojon) already performs cardiological, ophthalmological, pneumological and sleep tests, among others, and is waiting to confirm April’s opening of the surgical and obstetric area. The benefits of diagnostic imaging tests will also be

extended soon, because the first of the MRI scanners will be operational during this month. The hospital, which, initially, offered limited services, has gradually incorporated a whole host of benefits, tests and services, These include emergencies, hospitalisation, external consultations for medical and surgical specialties, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, attention to mental health, polyvalent day hospital, functional tests for diagnosis and monitoring of patholo-

gies, together with clinical and laboratory analysis, outpatient pharmacy, and a radiology area. Last year, the hospital had more than 170,000 consultations attended, of which more than 120,000 were firsttime, face-to-face appointments and follow-ups, and around 50,000 “virtual” consultations through consultants and medical specialists. It also took care of more than 60,000 emergency cases, and had 1,400 people admitted for a total of 21,800 days of stay.

Canaries boost Spain’s record high in tourism THE tourism boom continues unabated on mainland Spain, and in the Canary Islands, the month of January setting a record for both tourist arrivals and spending.

Nearly 4.2 million people visited the country, which proved to be a 2.2% rise from the same month last year, and they spent a €4.7bn total, which was 3.6% more than in January 2018. And the Canaries proved to be their favourite destination. The strong January figures arrived on the back of a bumper year for the tourism industry, and, though growth slowed down in 2018, the full year ended with a record 82.7m arrivals, and €89bn spent! According to figures released last Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), there were 4,196,939 international visitors in Spain in January, some 86,802 more than in January 2018. It is the sixth year running that Spain has improved its record for January. Britain was the main country of origin, with

807,347 visitors, followed by Germany, with slightly over 500,000. But Spain’s thirdlargest market, France, experienced an 8.7% drop to 446,307 visitors. The greatest tourism boost came from the United States, supplying a total of 149,000 visitors, which was a 25.5% rise on the same period last year. The Portuguese market has also grown a significant 21% to 141,000 visitors. These hefty January figures came on the back of a bumper year for the tourism industry. The in-demand Canaries welcomed 1.16m international tourists, representing 27.6% of the total. The next most popular

destination was Catalonia, with 910,000 visitors, followed by Madrid and Andalusia, each with more than 500,000 visitors. Most tourists (2.4m) stayed at hotels, followed by holiday rentals (378,467 tourists). Spending also reached a historic high of nearly €4.7bn, which proved to be a 3.6% rise from January 2018. This, however, is not what visitors spend in Spain, because the figure includes airfares, paid in their countries of origin. But daily expenditure per tourist grew 5% to €138, while the average stay was 8.1 days, which proved slightly less than in January last year.

FOLLOWING Manny Manuel’s drunken performance at the Las Palmas Carnival last week, there have been changes to contracts which all performers must sign for the Santa Cruz Carnival.

The Puerto Rican Merengue star had to leave the stage because he was too drunk to perform. Now, specifically, a recently-added clause in the contracts of the Autonomous Party Organisation, says, verbatim: “If

the organisation detects alcohol or drugs in the work environment, it will call the person in charge of the company, and the worker will be expelled. “If you suspect that the worker or artist has used prohibited substances, such as alcohol and drugs, he/ she will be prohibited from going on stage, and will be expelled from the premises.” The “Manny Manuel effect” continues to be big news, and organisers are determined not to have a repeat situation here in Tenerife, as our 2019 carnival continues to be a big success.

Fun and games, for kids NEWS IN BRIEF and dogs in playgrounds Gales hamper firefighters Mayor Gonzalez and Councillor Julián Martín enjoying the new scenery

FIERCE gale-force winds were this week complicating the work of firefighters, battling to control more than 100 blazes in the north of Spain. Seventy-seven of the fires were located in Asturias, where gusts reached 100km per hour, while Cantabria’s regional government was forced to activate its Forest Firefighting Plan, having been warned of high winds. The Muskiz fire, in the Vizcaya area, was the most serious of the fires affecting forest areas, and also where, as in Asturias and Cantabria, high winds caused grave difficulties for fire brigades.

Boy of 7 rescued from well

JUST weeks after the Julen rescue tragedy that gripped the world, another young child has plunged down a well in Spain. The seven-year-old boy was pulled from the hole by rescuers with a rope, before the emergency services arrived. The child fell into the empty well in Alaraz, Salamanca last Monday afternoon, and the 112 Castilla y Leon emergency control room despatched firefighters, police and medics to the scene. The child, described as being “conscious”, was transferred by ambulance to hospital in Salamanca.

Bargain booze voted tops

SUPERMARKET Lidl’s €15 Queen Margot Whisky has been crowned the “Best Scotch Whisky” in the world at the World Whiskies Awards. The eight-year, blended, bargain booze, which was judged by 40 international experts, beat more-luxurious brands, such as Johnnie Walker Black Label, which sells for more than double the price. The whiskey, mellowed in oak casks, is described as having aromas of dried apricot and plum.

End of trail for hiker

A HIKER was injured on Monday with a lower-leg injury after falling from the trail in Arico that leads to La Morriña Beach, in San Miguel de Tajao. Emergency services were called for the 49-year-old man, just before 8am, and he was rescued by firefighters, who transferred him to an ambulance, where he was treated by medics before being transferred to Hospiten Sur.

SAN Miguel de Abona Mayor Arturo E. Gonzalez has officially opened a super new playground for kids, on Avenida Lucio Díaz-Flores Feo, in Llano del Camello.

It is part of a new 24,000sq/m urban park and a 6,000sq/m dog park, which, he said, “meet one of the major neighbourhood requests, and the area with new

spaces for leisure”. The Mayor added: “Llano del Camello has experienced an important population growth in recent years, and, currently, has 5,000 residents. With the opening of these two resources, we are responding to local requests and are providing the area with new spaces for leisure and recreation. “In addition, the dog park will help pet-owners have an appropriate place to exercise their dogs.”

He also said how the San Miguel Council’s duty, as a public administration, is to incorporate these services and infrastructures to allow sustainable growth, and improve the quality of life for the residents. Julián Martín, General Services Councillor, who accompanied the Mayor at the inauguration, emphasised how the large, urban park highlights their commitment to continue implementing new services in the town.

When is a Miss actually a Mrs? SPANISH airports will soon change the way the public is addressed over their tannoy systems, in line with a new “anti-sexist language” policy, by dropping their famous “Señores Pasajeros” opening.

The Spanish language defaults to the masculine when referring to people, or objects, collectively, and, unless they are all female, the English “ladies and gentlemen” address is directed at males only. The literal translation for Señores is “Misters”, meaning the usual announcement refers to “Mr Passengers”, although is understood to include Señoras, or “Mrs”, in plural. Spanish women do not change their title of address from “Miss” to “Mrs”, or Se-

ñorita to Señora, upon marriage. This is dictated more by age, although Señorita is thought to be a diminutive, and considered rather patronising, and is seldom used. And, given that Spanish women do not change their surnames when they marry, it is impossible to ascertain from their full name, including title, whether or not they are a Mrs. Some public services, when addressing people collectively, have begun to open with “Señores y Señoras”, to neutralise the language in sex terms, even though the former, “Señores”, on its own, works

for both genders, in order. Airports across Spain are likely to address passengers over the loudspeaker with, simply, Atención, rather than using any terms that may refer to gender. Gender-free language has been proposed at Government level, with debates on introducing a third, neutral term altogether. While “son” is hijo and “daughter” is hija, a person’s children are known as their “hijos” unless they are all female. It has been suggested that the term “hijes” be introduced to avoid discrimination in favour of males.

Chimiche II wind farm Thief struck victim is now up and running with glass bottle FERNANDO Clavijo, The Canarian Government President, has highlighted the results of a joint project between Iberdrola and Canarian investors, raising the profile of renewable energies in the Canarian energy mix. It has grown, from 8% to 20%, in just three years, and Clavijo has now opened Chimiche II wind farm, in the south of Tenerife. It will have a capacity of 18,375 MW, which, throughout its useful life, can reduce the extra cost of generating the electricity systems of non-peninsular territories by €99m euros. The wind power generated by these wind turbines will mean an annual reduction of 34,453 metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere, in the Archipelago’s thermalgeneration power plants. The investment of these wind farms, and their evacuation infrastructures, has exceeded €20m euros, with works that have generated some 200 jobs during the construction

phase, and another 36 jobs in the maintenance and operation phases. “Realised projects like this wind farm recognise the Canary Islands’ commitment to a future, already present in the field of clean energies,” said Clavico. “These are the resources that make us better as a territory, and as a society.” He noted that in legislature initiated in 2015, it has been possible to redirect the energy policy, “overcoming 10 previous years with renewable energy drought”, and all achieved with two calls in the Islands. The Canarian President added: “This work has been crucial in the process of renewables, because, if we have advanced so much in these 3½ years, it has been thanks to the effort and the concerted commitment of all

agents involved, who have played an indispensable role.” He was speaking during an event, also attended by Pedro Ortega, Minister of Economy, Industry, Trade and Knowledge, and Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. Also present were Granadilla de Abona Mayor José Domingo Regalado and Iberdrola Spain CEO Ángeles Santamaría, as well as Juan Luis Lorenzo, President of Inversiones Financieras Isla de Tenerife and of Energías Ecológicas de Tenerife The Chimiche II wind farm, next to Tenerife’s TF-1 southern motorway, comprises seven 80m-high Siemens Gamesa wind turbines, capable of producing 18.4 megawatts of power, which means their production will supply 15,000 homes. The company which built this wind farm, from an investment of close to €20m, is Energías Ecológicas de Tenerife SA, made up of 50% each by Iberdrola Renovables Canarias SA and Inversiones Financieras Isla de Tenerife SL, with more than 600 shareholding Canarian companies and families.

NATIONAL Police officers in Las Palmas have arrested a 49-year-old man, who attacked and robbed a woman in the lobby of her La Isleta apartment building.

He was alleged to have hit her over the head with a glass bottle, and stolen her

mobile phone and 390 euros. The woman told police that the incident occurred when the man appeared, suddenly, as she entered the lobby. She provided officers with a full, physical description of the man, whom they identified from their database because he had a long history of violent crime and robbery. He was placed with the judicial authorities, awaiting trial.

Terminal 2 at South Tenerife airport is three months behind schedule THE upgrade of Tenerife’s South Airport’s Terminal 2 is running at least three months behind schedule. But officials say that ongoing work will still enable passengers to the use this new terminal.

Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA) were awarded the necessary works to adapt the airport’s second terminal (T2), so that it would be fully operational. They also say the departure lounge will be in use in July or August, From its 2009 construction until today, it allows billing operations only. But the work, costing 6,065,973 euros, was meant to be completed last November, and is still ongoing. Authorised sources of the first airport operator in the country announced that the works would last between four to six months, so that, “in principle, the boarding room will be operational throughout the summer, between July and August”.

The second terminal, known as T2 Tenerife Sur airport, was constructed and designed to serve 4,000 passengers hourly, at a cost of 39.1m euros. The work began in 2005,

resulting in 32 checkin counters, housed in 21,400sq/m. To this plan was added a parking lot of 10,500sq/m, holding a capacity 213 vehicles on

Embarrassed woman turns 50 shades of red A WOMAN, handcuffed inside a vehicle and having difficulty breathing on Tenerife’s Las Teresitas beach, had to be rescued by concerned National Police officers. Initially, they thought it was a kidnapping, but, after speaking with the victim, they discovered that it

was just a game, in which the woman “intended to recreate a scene from bestselling novel 50 Shades of Grey. “I did it myself. I have no partner and I am alone,” confessed the young woman, after being close to suffocating, having spent two hours with her wrists bound by plastic ties, and a length of packing tape tied around her neck. A man alerted the police

after hearing a car’s horn sound for a long time in the parking area of the busy beach. He approached the vehicle, and, immediately, made an urgent call to the National Police after seeing the woman handcuffed, with breathing difficulties and tears in her eyes. Officers kept a straight face as they removed her from the vehicle, and had her transferred to the local hospital for treatment.

three levels, eight bays for buses and an unloading stop for taxis. It has two boarding gates, on a footbridge connecting both terminals. But the T2, or exit terminal, its final destination, lacks something essential for it to be operative - the boarding bridge connecting the building with the aircraft, as well as all the internal services to make it valid. In fact, AENA tendered the work, yet to be completed, through a contest it named Adaptation of the T2 building to boarding processes, Tenerife South Airport. As a result, the airlines declined to operate in this terminal because it would imply an extra expense to have personnel also in the T1. The passengers who use T2 will have to travel halfa-kilometre to reach the main terminal.

Eye-witnesses say this work seems to have been halted for a long time, and that aspect brings some regrets from Roberto Ucelay, President of the Circle of Entrepreneurs and Professionals of the South of Tenerife (CEST). He says: “It is a pity to see such an advanced and abandoned work.” Ucelay believes it is “good news” that AENA plans its commissioning during the summer, but he questions the policy of the airport operator. “They have lost the opportunity to discuss their plans for Tenerife Sur Airport and to agree with the company, especially at the time when the Airport Regulation Document (DORA) is drawn up,” he says. “From the Circle (CEST) and the business community of the region, we do not know who or what South administration AENA has told to ignore what we ask.”

Carnival Queen is proper golden girl

8th March 2019 - 14th March 2019

contestants wore tall, dazzling dresses with names of their own, including: “The Night”, “Kiss Me” or “At dawn, I will conquer”. Choosing the new Queen is one of the carnival’s biggest events, broadcast live by regional and national television. At the start of the gala, giant, illuminated replicas of jelly fish, dolphins and fish “sailed” through the audience, immersed in a dreamy representation of the deep sea. And now we have a new Tenerife Carnival Queen, the music, dance and street parades will get into full swing, until the 20th March finale. Photos: Sir Old Golfer

Death of cyclist leads to stricter traffic penalties THE Spanish Government has approved tougher penalties for serious traffic offences, and a significant change in the law, following a campaign by a cyclist’s widow. Anna González lost her husband, Óscar, in a hit-andrun incident in 2015, when he was struck by a truck while cycling. The truck driver fled, but he was identified from the remains of the vehicle left behind. Subsequently, he was arrested, but the law didn´t go far enough to deal with abandoning the victim, which spearheaded the campaign. Within Spain’s traffic laws, there was a commitment for everyone to help victims, whether he or she were directly involved or not, and failing to do so was treated extremely seriously. But that law applied only if the victim were still alive, and,

in Óscar’s case, because he had died at the scene, there was no abandonment. But the driver was still dealt with for other offences

concerning the incident. Now, though, there is a new crime of “abandonment of the place of the incident”, with penalties of two-to-four

years in prison if the incident were a result of carelessness, or from three-to-six months behind bars in the event of a lesser degree. Another change is automatic imprudence in the event of a serious incident. Some of the most serious, road-safety offences include driving with drugs, or alcohol of more than 0.6 mg/l of expired air, and excessive speeding above the maximum permitted limit, as well as driving without a licence. If a road-safety crime causes death or injury, this will automatically be considered as serious imprudence, with penalties of between one-tofour years in prison in case of death, and up to one year in the case of injuries. Until now, a judge evaluated each case, and, on many occasions, this type of behaviour was not considered to be a serious lack of care. There has also been an increase in prison sentences. A maximum, four-year penalty could be applied to serious imprudence, resulting

in death, regardless of the number of deaths or people injured. The judge now has the power to increase the sentence, up to nine years in prison, depending on the number of fatalities or those seriously injured. Some of the less-serious offences have been classified as crimes, such as overtaking where forbidden; failing to stop at a “stop” sign or traffic light, or using a mobile phone while driving. In addition, failing to maintain a safe, 1.5-metre distance when passing a cyclist, etc, which, subsequently, results in injury or death, will be considered as recklessness, of a less serious nature. The significant point is that victims are now protected by criminal law, rather than relying on the protection of the administrative courts, and, in most cases, the vehicle´s insurance. The reform has not had any amendment, and, will come into force when it is published in the official BOE gazette.

Help plea for Spain’s ailing olive industry

Charity Bus is still bowling along well

WORKERS at a Southern Spain canning company claim they will be axed if they take longer than two minutes in the loo! Their astonishing claim has been backed up with a video on social-media networks, posted by Paco Cabello, of the Andalucian Trade Union of Workers (SAT). Several workers have now denounced the humiliation to which they are subjected in their daily jobs.

Cabello claims that this type of behaviour is common in the packaging sector, in the Andalucian province of Almeria. But the company at the centre of the dispute has defended itself, saying it complies with current regulations. The management claim the video has been “manipulated”, since it is part of a conversation that has been edited. They have also said they will put the matter in the hands of their lawyers.

SHEILA Ball, Vice-Captain of The Early Birds Bowling Club, presents a magnificent €1,500 cheque to the Cancer Bus Charity at Happy Days Sports Club, Costa del Silencio. The donation was collected from the generous Club members throughout the past year. Carol Salisbury, who founded the charity, with all donations being collected for her by the AECC, Spain’s main cancer charity, said: “We are still going strong, thanks to clubs and societies, who keep us in mind every year, and I’m grateful for AECC’s input and co-operation.”

SPAIN’S Commerce Minister has called on the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to help protect its olive industry, following the US increase of import duties. Reyes Maroto said Madrid had appealed to the WTO following the tariff hike on black olives, which are among the goods on which US President Donald Trump has slapped higher import taxes,

as part of his protectionist, economic policy. The tariffs were introduced to protect US industries and jobs, but critics, and some experts, claim they have disrupted global trade. Maroto said the olive tariffs had already impacted on the Spanish industry, particularly in Sevilla Province. The Spanish Association of Exporters and Producers of Table Olives (Asemesa) said the sector lost €23.8m in earnings from exports to the US, from January to November last year.

Hopefully, no parking ticket! A TOURIST driver, who lost control of his car in Santa Cruz last Monday, collided with a pole and ended up, balanced precariously, on top of a small wall at a junction.

Helicopter rain-maker will control forest fires

The driver and his passenger suffered minor injuries, despite the incident’s spectacular nature, but both were transferred to a health centre as a precautionary measure.

Education spending a big plus for Spain A 73-YEAR-OLD Spanish inventor has created a device to turn helicopters into rainmaking machines in an effort to better control forest fires. SPAIN spends 23.7% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on the state-school system, which is the 10thhighest level in the world, according to a new ranking. A report from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) showed that Spain came ahead of Britain, the

Netherlands, the US and New Zealand. The latter countries’ education spending was below the 20% OECD average. France topped the ranking with spending equal to 31.2% of GDP, followed by Belgium, Finland, Denmark and Italy, which all spent more than 28%.

Antonio Garcia, who lives in Pitres, in the Alpujarras, has spent the last 18 months working ‘12 hours a day’ to develop his invention, which he says will ‘revolutionise’ the fire service. Garcia has spent €6,000 on a patent, granting his device international protection as he hopes to send it ‘all over the world’. “If it’s rain that puts out a forest fire, then we need to

create that rain,” Garcia told the Olive Press. “Helicopters have been used to control forest fires, but my invention uses a completely different way of spreading the water.” Garcia’s invention is effectively a sprinkler that can be ad-justed by the pilot to control flow, intensity and volume of water, according to the situation. At present, helicopters used in fire-fighting can only dump large containers of water in one go. Garcia says he has presented his invention to the Spanish Military Emergencies Unit, as well as to fire-fighting services in California, and that his device can also be used to decontaminate polluted

urban areas suffering from drought. “The helicopters would fly in a group and would be able to suck up water from reservoirs through a telescopic pipe,” Garcia added. “Once empty, the helicopters could recharge by taking water from swimming pools or tanks, before returning to the blaze.” Garcia described himself as a fire expert and inventor, whose previous inventions include a special floorcleaning device. He told the Olive Press that though 73 years of age, he is still full of passion, and hopes his newest creation will ‘revolutionise’ the fire extinguishing potential of the world.

Carnival Monday’s Much-wanted Italian four trash ending

returning home, to prison!

MONDAY’S Carnival night, one of the most crowded of the calendar, with thousands of people in the centre of the Santa Cruz capital, left tons of rubbish, in the early hours of Tuesday. Last year’s Carnival on this night resulted in the collection of 64.4 tons of waste. But the City Council have always highlighted the work put in by their workers, to ensure that Santa Cruz always recovers its daily aspect in the shortest possible time.

FOUR Italian men, members of a criminal gang, have been arrested by the National Police, and will return to their home country, and a prison cell! They have two European Court Orders of Detention and Deportation from Italy, for drugtrafficking and crimes against property. The detainees, members of the same family, who had taken refuge in Tenerife, are aged between 45 and 78 and have numerous police records in Italy. They have already been sentenced in Italy to more than nine years in prison. They were sentenced in “absentia” (absence) by the Tempio Pausania Tribunal in 2016, for crimes committed in 1998 and 1999, comprising drugtrafficking and fraudulent activities involving property. For years, they had left their homes in Italy, establishing

themselves as residents here in Tenerife. But the firm conviction from the Italian court, and the impossibility of locating them for the fulfilment of their sentences, led to an investigation, initiated by the Italian Police, which, co-ordinated with the National Police, found them here on the island. The four men are now in the hands of the judicial authorities, awaiting deportation back to Italy, and prison!

These arrests are the latest as the result of increased collaborations, formulated by the Spanish National Police with the Provincial Brigade of the Judicial Police, the Italian Carabineros Corps and the Central Operations Service (Sirene Italia). It will result in National Police officers assisting in arrests in Spain and the Canary Islands of wanted criminals, not only in Italy, but across Europe.

10,000 euros and a free Breaking up not house to run pharmacy that hard to do! THE Canary Islands has become the second-largest community in Spain to have more marital breakdowns last year.

AN estimated €10,000 and a free house, annually, has, reportedly, been guaranteed to the person who agrees to take over a local pharmacy in Soria, Spain.

A total of 4,000 signatures have been collected in the hope of reopening the pharmacy, in Villar del Rio. The business, now closed, is said to have left 17 local towns without a pharmacy service for over 10 months. Spanish press say that neighbours haven’t been able to access medications, or even a simple plaster, and they have to depend on a 45km journey to reach the nearest pharmacy. The towns affected have a large number of elderly residents, who rely on these medications to tackle chronic illnesses, and some have been forced to hire taxi services to carry out supply runs. However, when snow and frost hit these isolated towns, residents can no longer depend on these transport services to receive

the products needed. Miguel Ángel López, head of the group pushing for the pharmacy’s reopening, said the Junta of Castilla y Leon, and the School of Pharmacists of Soria, have been “unable” to resolve the situation, which has left thousands of people without their fundamental healthcare rights. He added that one of the main issues causing the closure of the business was the lack of profit earned in the “slower” months of the year, but he highlighted that the work during summer months could even become

“excessive”. In the hope of reopening the establishment, whoever agrees to move to Villar del Rio and take over the pharmacy will, reportedly, be offered around €10,000 a year, provided by grants and public aid, to help develop the business. Also, a house and garage will be provided, and all additional revenue, originating from the pharmacy’s sales, will also belong to the new owner. In total, there are 17 towns with 1,000 residents, all affected by the pharmacy’s closure.

An average of almost 15 separations were registered per day, according to the Canarian Superior Court of Justice. The archipelago recorded an average of 26.7 marital dissolution requests per 100,000 inhabitants during 2018, while in the whole of Spain, the average was 23.9 break-ups per 100,000 inhabitants. That was 2.8 points below the Canaries, which were surpassed by the Valencian Community only, with a rate of 27.9 demands per 100,000 inhabitants. The community with the least civil lawsuits of this type was Castilla y León, with an 18.6 rate. Statistics show that Canarian residents had a total of 5,686 reports of matrimonial dissolution, made up of claims of nullity, separation or divorce, both by mutual agreement and

non-consensual, which means an average of 15.5. In the year-on-year comparison, the Canaries had a total of 5,879 marital claims computed in 2017, which suggests that, last year, the figure was reduced by 3.2% against the previous year. By provinces, Las Palmas counted 2,861 marital disputes (an average of 7.8 per day) in 2018, 1.09% more than Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, which registered 2,830 (7.7 litigation per couple each day). At the national level, the demands for matrimonial dissolution filed in 2018 in the judicial bodies, 111,704, were 2.4 percent less than those filed in 2017.

Generous PM faces a moment of truth, as election beckons SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez plans to donate all proceeds from the sale of his recently-launched book to the homeless. “It’s my truth,” said the socialist leader, of his non-fiction work, Manual de Resistencia (‘Manual of Resistance’) in which he describes his political rise and fall… and rise again. And he compared his rollercoaster ride with the people of Spain, “who have suffered during the financial crisis”. Sánchez, voted head of his party, and was then given second-chance presidential vote after his immediate rival, Mariano Rajoy of the rightwing PP, scraped through the election with the most ballots, but in a minority, and was unable to gain support. Sánchez was on the threshold of leading Spain when his would-be supporters, left-wing Podemos, voted him down. He was then forced to stand down from running the party, becoming “just another subscriber”, but a later in-house election saw him voted back as its leader. A no-confidence vote against the PP in June last year meant Sánchez finally gained the keys to the Moncloa, Spain’s

answer to the US White House or 10 Downing Street. But failure to gain opposition support for his 2019 budget, his party holding fewer than 25% of all Parliament seats, compelled him to call a snap election on 28th April. The rollercoaster is not over yet, since the PP is now headed up by hard-right Pablo Casado, while centrists Ciudadanos is now leaning much further to the right, and alt-right party Vox, which has gained 12 seats out of 110 in Andalucía’s regional Parliament, plans to stand in the general election. Meanwhile, Podemos is in crisis, with conflicts between key members. In under a year, Spain has gone from having a

majority centre-left opposition to a larger majority hard-right opposition. Sánchez’s “Resistance Manual” tells the full tale, revealed in the book’s unveiling. During his speech, he said he was quietly confident about the elections’ results. But with Spanish leadership no longer merely a battle between the “big two” establishment parties and much more fragmented, a win could still see the socialists governing in a minority. Despite frequent confrontations when they were on opposing sides, and Sánchez’s having been behind the noconfidence vote against his own party, the Prime Minister speaks warmly of Mariano Rajoy. His predecessor, criticised frequently for lacking political strength, remaining tightlipped, avoiding public appearances as often as possible. Yet he is also described by those who have met him off-duty, including popular, left-leaning TV presenters, as a decent person with an excellent sense of humour. “I learned a lot from Mariano Rajoy’s enormous ‘sense of State’, and Catalonia united us,” Sánchez admits in his

book. “I also learned a lot from him, with his handling of the tremendous political crisis of October 2017, and I like and respect him,” he adds, referring to the disputed independence referendum in Catalonia. But he considers Casado’s idea of applying Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, which would strip Catalonia of its selfgoverning powers indefinitely, would be “irresponsible”, and would deepen the conflict between the central government and Catalonia, pushing any real solution further away. Overall, he criticises Casado for being far-right and for “taking advantage, being hypocritical and lacking responsibility”. He adds: “Any action of this nature [applying Article 155] cannot be taken without full consensus with the main opposition party.” His recipe for resistance involves having convictions, and knowing what you’re aiming for, but it is also about trying to make ends meet on €800 a month, referring to Spain’s workers on the minimum wage. Sánchez says he has not yet had any complaints about his comments in the book on the former socialist leader, his

predecessor Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, or on King Felipe VI. He believes he gives a constructive vision that ‘does not flee from any debate, nor attempt to resist blame for his mistakes’, nor accuse anyone of anything. He wrote the book with the help of Irene Lozano, leader of the now-defunct centrist party Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD), which is rumoured to be making a comeback in time for the general election. Sánchez describes his party as constantly renewing and updating itself, to avoid becoming stuck in the past, making it the newest party in Spanish politics, even though, in practice, it is one of the oldest in terms of years. “In a country where second chances are stigmatised, I’m calling for a second, third, fourth and even fifth chance,” he concludes, before adding that all earnings from sales of his Resistance Manual will add to funds to help the homeless. The exact price of the book, likely to be in a hardback-only format for some time, is not known. But new hardback releases in Spain cost around €19.99 to €23.99.

FOR British expatriates, understanding domicile is an important element of estate planning. It is domicile, not residence, that determines your liability for UK inheritance tax.

Domicile is a complex, and incredibly adhesive, UK, common-law concept. The basic rule is that a person is domiciled in the country in which they have their permanent home, regarded as your “homeland”. However, you can remain UKdomiciled, even after living abroad for many years. There are three types of domicile under English law: *Domicile of origin - where a child takes their father’s (or single/unmarried mother’s) domicile (not necessarily their country of birth) *Domicile of dependence applies to women married before 1974 (whose domicile will mirror their husband’s), as well as minors and other legal

www.canarianweekly.com 8th March 2019 - 14th March 2019

Do you know where you are domiciled?

dependents *Domicile of choice - acquired by moving permanently to another country. While changing domicile is possible, this needs to be a carefully-considered process, because there are no set rules; much depends on your particular circumstances and intentions. If challenged by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the onus is on you, or, rather, your heirs, to prove you were non-UK domicile at the date of death. Changing domicile To acquire a domicile of choice, you must be physically present and tax resident in your new country, intend to live there, permanently, and not foresee any reason to return to the UK. You need to sever as many ties as possible with the UK, as HMRC will look for any indication that you see Britain as your homeland, and may return one day. Stating in your will that you wish to be buried in the UK, for example, could work against you. Even if you adopt a domicile of choice outside the UK, it can take up to four years to shed a UK domicile for

inheritance-tax purposes. HMRC may treat you as UKdomiciled if you: *were UK resident for 15 of the last 20 tax years *return to Britain for more than a year (if the UK is your domicile of origin and place of birth) *move to a third country until you can demonstrate you have established a new domicile of choice. The effect of domicile on inheritance taxes Anyone who is deemed UKdomiciled is liable to 40% inheritance tax on their worldwide assets. Since April 2017, this includes all UK residential property.

There is an individual taxfree allowance of £325,000, transferable to your spouse or civil partner, plus a £125,000 “family-home allowance” (increasing to £150,000 this April, and £175,000 in April 2020). As well as UK tax, you could be liable to Spanish succession tax. However, in most cases, the UK would give credit for the tax paid overseas to avoid double taxation on the same asset. Non-UK domiciles are only liable to UK inheritance tax on assets situated in the UK. The best approach Domicile is a complex area, particularly for inheritance-tax

purposes. If you are looking to claim change of domicile, or there is a significant amount of UK inheritance tax at stake, take specialist, personalised advice. Whether or not you have UK domicile status, there are tax-planning arrangements available, to reduce your liabilities to inheritance and other taxes. Blevins Franks are experts in this area, and will help you establish your domicile status, how inheritance tax interacts with Spanish succession tax, and what steps you can take to minimise unnecessary taxes for your heirs. Three reasons to buy life insurance

LIFE insurance is a necessary purchase that has the benefit of giving you and your family peace of mind. There are many different types of cover that can be tailored to suit your needs and lifestyle. Life insurance not only provides financial protection in the event of death, but it is also a savings product that offers benefits that are becoming ever-moreextensive and customisable, so it is not surprising that, after car and home insurance, it is the third-most-contracted insurance cover in Spain. The average profile of a person who contracts life insurance is a married male, aged between 35-44 years old, but it is never too late, or early, to take out a policy. Arrange a mortgage to buy a house In Spain, six-out-of-ten homes are bought with a mortgage. In this case, it is advisable to take out life insurance, because, in case of death or permanent disability of the person who contracted the mortgage, the insurer will take over the payments to the bank, and remove your partner or relatives from the economic responsibility that could be difficult to continue with.

A proven product that everyone should protect themselves with

In fact, with most banks, it is a pre-requisite as a guarantee before signing the mortgage. Until recently, banking entities conditioned their mortgage lending with an “obligation” to contract some linked products, such as life insurance. But, since a few years ago, with the approval of the European Parliament of the Mortgage Credit Directive, banks are prohibited by law from linking a mortgage to the purchase of insurance. You only need that your insurance company includes a clause in your policy, registering your lending bank as the mortgage beneficiary. In that way, you comply with the request of the bank, but you also save money. You could even save a difference of 700

euros, because the products offered by the bank can be up to 300% more expensive. Start a family Life insurance can also be a guarantee for those who are thinking about starting a family. It should be taken into account that raising a child in Spain can be expensive. It has been estimated that a baby can cost 14,266 euros during its first year of life, and 14,056 euros during the next two. On average, a child can represent the disbursement of 1,183 euros per month, during its first three years, which represents 80.78% of the average, monthly, net salary of a worker. It will depend on each person’s standard of living, but, before

the child turns 18, the parents could have spent between 115,000 and 350,000 euros. If, at any time, one of the parents dies, it will be difficult for the family to maintain the same rhythm of life. In those cases, although the personal loss will be irreplaceable, life insurance could guarantee the necessary capital to meet family expenses. With Liberty Seguros, even if the insured dies in an accident, along with his/her spouse, and they have children younger than 18, the beneficiaries will receive double the sum insured. Protect your income level Last year, there were 3,796 serious occupational accidents in Spain. Of these, 618 had fatal consequences. The possibility of suffering an accident at work, or outside, that causes a permanent or temporary disability, exists, so it is a wise choice to protect your income level. It will depend on each policy, but the insured can receive an advance payment of the contracted capital, in case of temporary or permanent incapacity, that prevents them from working, and, therefore,

affects their income, whether as a result of an accident or illness. In fact, with Liberty Seguros, the insured will be advanced the sum insured for death if he/she is diagnosed with one of the following serious illness, or needs one of the following operations: cancer, heart attack, cardiovascular accident, kidney failure, bypass surgery, paralysis and transplant of vital organs, in accordance with the terms established in the special conditions of the policy. With insurance, not only for life, but also car, home, business, commercial, funeral, etc., Liberty Seguros is considered the preferred ex-pat insurer in Spain today. Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents, dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice, because every home is different, and such an important decision deserves a face-to-face chat with a professional insurance advisor, in your own language, to discuss the most suitable cover for you. England will be looking to bounce back from that painful 21-13 defeat to Wales as they take on Italy at Twickenham. After hugely impressive wins against Ireland and France, defeat in Cardiff was a setback but Eddie Jones will take heart from the emergence of some new talent in the form of 20-year-old Tom Curry and tackling machine Mark Wilson. After injuring himself in the first game in Dublin, Maro Itoje will be hoping to return against an Italian side who have lost all three of their games, but who gave Ireland a scare in Rome last time out. Mark Pougatch is joined in the studio by Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward and Lawrence Dallaglio with pitch-side inserts from Martin Bayfield, former Italian skipper Marco Bortolami and Maggie Alphonsi. Commentary from Nick Mullins, Ben Kay and Ugo Monye.

Timewasters

The second series of award-winning time-travelling comedy Timewasters returns to ITV2. Our time travelling jazz band are back for another spin through time in series two: Daniel Lawrence Taylor (Cockroaches, Uncle) plays Nick, Kadiff Kirwan (Chewing Gum, Crims) plays Jason, Adelayo Adedayo (Skins, Some Girls) as Lauren and Samson Kayo (Famalam, The Javone Prince Show) as Horace. This time round they’re transported to 1950’s London where the future has arrived: the birth of the teenager, slick-haired Teddy Boys, the vibrant Windrush crowd, box-fresh televisions and - crucially - the dawn of Rock n’ Roll. A host of new stellar talent joins the cast for the second series including BAFTA/ Olivier award nominated actress Anna Chancellor (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Hour), Javone Prince (PhoneShop, The Javone Prince Show), Ellie White (The Windsors) and BAFTA award winning actor Daniel Rigby (Eric & Ernie). Episode 1: Horace is desperate to go back in time and save his Grandma from slipping on the stairs but time travelling with Homeless Pete is not an exact science and the band find themselves in 1958.

Perez interviews Andrea Doyle (Therese Bradley). Initially petulant, she quickly becomes scared when Perez explains the charges against her, and reluctantly agrees to help the investigation. Looking for Zezi, they are horrified to discover a body dumped in the garden of the property wrapped in bin liners. The inhumanity of the traffickers hits home, and Perez is particularly affected by this discovery. Tosh discovers that the property where Zezi and Nikki were held is one of Duncan’s holiday lets. When Perez questions Duncan (Mark Bonnar) about it, he is adamant that he has no idea anyone was staying in it - records showed it to be empty. Perez grudgingly believes him, but it’s the final straw for Duncan on an already bad day. Feeling the world is against him he embarks on a drunken bender and falls asleep on the beach. The following morning he wakes up and makes a shocking discovery...

Shadow Commander: Iran’s Military Mastermind c h o i c e BBC2, 21.00

For decades one Iranian commander has dominated the brutal struggle for power and influence across the Middle East. A military mastermind, General Qassem Suleimani has been described by the former head of US forces in Iraq as “capable and charismatic”, but a “diabolically evil human being”. This one-hour documentary tells the extraordinary story of General Qassem Suleimani, with first-hand accounts of his secret deals and shifting alliances across Syria, Iraq and Lebanon. During the Iraq War, General Suleimani was responsible for the smuggling of thousands of sophisticated bombs into the country and arming the Shia militias. They killed hundreds of British and American troops. But just a few years later, the western coalition suddenly found themselves on the same side as General Suleimani as they fought alongside each other to defeat the Islamic State. Throughout this revealing documentary, key players such as US Diplomat Ryan Crocker and former head of US forces in Iraq General David Petraeus talk candidly about the desperate struggle in the Middle East region and General Suleimani’s influence, stretching from Tehran to Beirut.

Pensioner’s disgusting abuse of flight woman A PENSIONER from Birmingham, who racially abused an elderly black woman onboard a Ryanair flight, will face prosecution by the Spanish authorities. A video of 70-year-old David Mesher, calling the elderly woman a “ugly black b*****d” and shouting, “don’t talk to me in a foreign language, you stupid, ugly cow”, has gone viral. Delsie Eunice Gayle, the 77-year-old woman at the centre of the storm, spoke of her disgust at the incident after Mr Mesher was allowed to remain on the plane. A Barcelona prosecutor has launched proceedings against him, and Mr Mesher was later interviewed by West Midlands Police officers at his sheltered accommodation, in Yardley Wood, Birmingham. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, who said the Spanish authorities would take action, revealed: “In October, when everything happened, we denounced the situation to the prosecutor, and he believes there is a case, so

he’s actually prosecuting. “The judiciary here in Spain moves slowly, so this will not happen quickly. Barcelona City Council has provided the prosecutor with the information regarding the victim, and the testimony. “He has everything in his hands and has reaffirmed to us that there is a case, and that he will go on with it.” Essex Police said: “Following disturbing footage on social media, we have completed a thorough investigation into reports that a woman was

subjected to racial, verbal abuse on a stationary plane at Barcelona Airport. “We have completed our enquiries as far as we are able to, legally, given that the incident did not happen within our jurisdiction, and we are now in contact with the Spanish legal authorities, so that they can determine how they wish to proceed.” Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau branded Mesher “a shameless, rude racist”, and vowed to help bring him to justice. The shocking incident was captured on 19th October on a Ryanair flight from Barcelona to Stansted, Essex. Earlier, a Spanish police spokesman confirmed that authorities there were waiting to receive a formal complaint regarding the pensioner, racially abused on a Ryanair flight, so they could launch a proper investigation. After the nasty incident, retired care-assistant Delsie said: “I feel really depressed about it. I go to my bed and say, ‘What have I done?’ “I haven’t done anything for you to attack me. Because of the colour of my skin, I was abused like that.”

Let’s paws for a coffee!

A NEW Spanish café, opened in Madrid to double up as an adoption centre for dogs, encourages customers to mix with the canines over a coffee. The Doger Café, the only one of its kind in the country, has proved to be successful among animal lovers, with 12 dogs adopted, to date. Founders Roberto Aláez and Javier Alcazar started the cafe after contacting dog shelters, and offering to advertise dogs up for adoption. Aláez told the Daily Mail: “We are adopting many shelters in such a short time, and, above all, we are transmitting consciousness

to the people through great communication.” The dogs interact with visitors and prospective adopters for about 15 minutes, and can then cool down with a twohour nap. The café owners are preparing to open an identical café in Barcelona, followed by another in Madrid. They have also set their sights on the South American market, and are in the advanced stages of bringing their new concept to Peru. Aláez said: “In addition to creating this community for the world of pets, the awareness reduces their abandonment in a remarkable way.”

You definitely can’t rent these hire cars

SPANISH police have arrested two people, accused of selling stolen rental cars, while Guardia Civil officers are investigating another eight people on suspicion of fraud, document misrepresentation, misappropriation, and organised crime. The moves came after 10 cars, believed stolen in Germany, were to have been sold in Madrid and Leon. Under “Operation Palca”, officers

began an investigation after inspecting a second-hand-car dealership in Alcala de Henares, Madrid, where they found one car, which had been reported stolen in Germany. Guardia Civil agents later claimed they had discovered a link between the vehicle and a group of Romanians, living in Arganda del Rey, Madrid, who had, allegedly, registered and sold 10 cars in Spain in a short time. Police said the cars, worth a total of €259,410, had been stolen from Friesland, Germany.

Tragic toddler ‘may have died during the rescue bid’ LAWYERS representing the owner of the rural property, on which two-year-old Julen Roselló fell down a 110-metre borehole in January, have presented a Málaga court with a report, which argues that the toddler died during the rescue attempt, and not during the actual fall.

The accident, reported worldwide, took place on 13th January, when the tragic boy fell into the hole, measuring barely 25cm across, which had been excavated without the proper necessary documents to locate underground water. A huge rescue effort swung into action in the subsequent days, and, after a search lasting nearly a fortnight, specialist miners and the Guardia Civil found Julen‘s body under a plug of earth, around 70m down the hole. Land-owner David Serrano, the partner of a Roselló family member, is the only person so far facing criminal charges

over the accident, and he is also being investigated for involuntary manslaughter. Julen had been on the property in Totalán, Málaga, with his parents for a family lunch. The report handed over to the court was put together by Jesús María Flores, an architect who publicly criticised the rescue operation, a week after the toddler had fallen into the borehole, and while efforts to locate the child were ongoing. Just hours after his statements

Comings and goings of town’s quiet street

NEIGHBOURS in Alaro, a quiet Mallorcan town, are being warned to lock up their cars, because a mystery man has broken into half-adozen of them… to pleasure himself! At least five neighbours have reported having their cars treated in this manner, and all of them living in the same Calle Joan Alcover street, in the heart of the town. The baffling behaviour began at Christmas, when one woman discovered her

car had been broken into and soiled. Since then, at least four other neighbours have reported the same complaint to police. Yet nothing has been stolen from the cars. “I had left my sunglasses, some money, a mobile charger and even a wrapped present for my husband in the car, yet all of it was still there,” said one woman, who had parked her BMW right outside her house. “Things were a little upside down, but strangest of all was that two passport-size photos of me had been stuck on the glove compartment. “I thought it was with glue, but I now know different!”

were made on a TV show, the Málaga Architects Association distanced itself from his opinions, and expressed their support and confidence in the technical team involved in the work. The document sent to the judge analyses information, recordings and other materials making up part of the legal brief, to arrive at conclusions which “allow for the assumption that the death of the young boy could have taken place during the rescue efforts”. The defence for Serrano

points, specifically, to a tool used during the first hours of the search. “The use of a pick, 10 impacts in total, between 5.30pm and 9pm on the day of the incident, is the only thing that, physically, could have caused the wounds to the minor’s head and skull,” reads the report, made available to the judge. “The fact that eight hairs from the minor were found on the end of the pick, after the last time it was removed, three of which contained the root, leads us to ask: ‘What other alternative theory, apart

from a direct impact against the head of the minor, could explain the presence of these biological remains on the end of the pick?’” The report also takes into account the preliminary autopsy, the day after Julen’s body was found, which indicated that the death was caused “as a consequence of a severe head trauma that affected the temporal and frontotemporal area” of the minor, which took place the same day as the fall. The defence believes that these blows were found on the side of the head, “where it would be difficult for a blow of that magnitude to be sustained during the fall”. The report argues: “The minor was, from the very first moments after his fall, under a layer of earth and material, that was between 10-15cms deep,” and states that the last four impacts of the pick “penetrated at least 35cms into the plug of earth on top of Julen”. The defence lawyers are calling for the operation’s technical heads, as well as fire crews and Civil Guard officers, who took part in the rescue, to give evidence before the ruling judge.

Swim-pool perv, who awaited busy periods

A MAN suspected of sexually-assaulting five teenage girls at an indoor swimming pool in Lloseta, Mallorca, has been arrested by police.

The first incident was said to have occurred last week, when a 15-year-old claimed a man, swimming in the same lane as her, touched her intimate parts. She did not tell her parents at first, but, when it happened again, she told her father, who contacted Lloseta

police. Within days of investigating, officers spoke to a further four young girls, aged 15-17, who filed similar complaints. A police source said that on each occasion, the suspect took advantage of the busy pool by forcing swimmers to share lanes, giving him a chance to brush against females, and, allegedly, touch them. The possibility of further victims has not been ruled out and the investigation is ongoing. The alleged offender is said to be a local resident.

Badly-injured cyclist rescued by Guardia GUARDIA Civil officers carried off a dramatic helicopter rescue in Mallorca, after the handlebars on a cyclist’s bike skewered him through the groin when he crashed. The Mountain Rescue division raced to save the Spaniard last Saturday as he was rapidly losing blood, following a crash. The handlebars punctured

the man’s groin area, and he continued to bleed. A friend said his companion had lost consciousness, while a Guardia statement said the man had suffered “a deep wound”. Rescue teams transferred him to the Balearic island’s Son Espases Hospital, where he received emergency surgery. He had been riding in the Puig de Galatzó mountain area, which stands over 1,000m high, and is popular with the island’s tourists.

Police hold dozens over a Social Security fiddle POLICE officers in Spain have arrested nearly 60 people, across many parts of the mainland, following a mammoth investigation into a Social Security fraud, totalling €19m.

The National Police, in collaboration with the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social, nabbed them in the provinces of Alicante, Almeria, Barcelona, Caceres, Cadiz, Castellon, Gerona, Huesca, A Coruña, Leon, Lugo, Madrid, Sevilla,

Toledo, Valencia, Valladolid and Zamora. Those arrested have been charged with crimes against the Social Security system, document fraud and belonging to a criminal group. Police said that “half-companies”, and those arrested, were “mainly the managers of the companies and, also, some of their front men”. In the Leon province, the police said of one company: “They have not paid any contributions from their 170plus workers, from 2009 to the present day, robbing the system of about €575,000 euros.”

Imperio del Pintxo

The menu at Imperio del Pintxo is based on flavours from around the world with Canarian gastronomic fusion.

Fusion food so inspiring! by Paul Waller

The restaurant Imperio del Pintxo is located on Paseo Marcial Garcia 23, which is the front walkway in El Medano, to the left of the Hotel Medano.

It can be found at the end of the street which overlooks the sea on the edge of a little tranquil bay, with small fishing boats stacked up by the water’s edge. It is a special little restaurant, brought to you by the same family who own Mr Chen in Los Cristianos, but this is their original restaurant, which opened four years ago. The idea of world-fusion food, in tapas-size portions, is obviously what this family has success with. They offer traditional dishes, from here in the Canaries, to some radical infusion delights, which have won awards in Tenerife. One of these dishes is the Crazy King Prawns, the winner in Ruta de la Tapa 2014. This dish is also served in Mr Chen. Imperio del Pintxo is one of El Medano’s

hidden gems. On arrival, we were greeted by brother and sister combination, Yi and Mei. We sat at our table, outside on the walkway, so we could take in the atmosphere of this quaint passage. It had a typical Spanish feel about it, with a cosmopolitan

8th March 2019 - 14th March 2019 through the menu, asking our host for his recommendations. His great, confident answer was: “I recommend it all!” So we all decided to go with his advice, and ordered a selection of dishes, so we could experience a lot of the different flavours and ideas. When we say different, there are many new inspirational thoughts from the owners, throughout the menu. We ordered the Sauteed Cheese with whisky reduction, the award-winning Crazy King Prawns, a Salmon Tartare with raspberries, and a Tuna Maki with strawberries. A few people reading this may think that sounds weird, but, until you try those last two dishes, you won’t understand how good they taste. We were blown away by the way the flavours combined so well. We then tried the La Palma smoked-cheese parcels with apple chutney, the crispy baby octopus with bravas potatoes, and the Foie Gras terrine with grilled apples, all with delicate infusions and amazing flavours that made our taste buds tingle.

Several other dishes caught our eye: the Rice Emperador with Parmesan Cheese Flakes, Traditional Pad Thai, and Stacked Fillet Steak with crispy pastry. The Pulled Ox tail was cleverly cooked because it was on the bone. But when you put your fork into it, it fell off like pulled pork. We all agreed that the combinations and flavours of all the dishes we tried were such a refreshing change from the normal run-of-the-mill restaurants

on this island, and couldn’t understand why we hadn’t visited this place before. As we all know, and are finding out, constantly, there are many restaurants that have their unique ways of preparing and cooking food, which makes this island so exciting. This restaurant is definitely one of those places. After finishing all these dishes we wanted to try more, but they would have to wait for the next visit, because we

THE law about washing, repairing or spraying your car on a public road is clear, and the answer is a firm No!

Article 4.2 of the Reglamento General de Circulación states that it is prohibited to throw, deposit or abandon on the road, objects or materials that can cause an issue with traffic, such as stopping or parking, making using the road dangerous, or deteriorating it, or the installations. The issue isn’t with the dirt itself, but, rather, with the products used to clean, the tools used to repair, and noxious chemicals used for spraying. It is assumed that all road water will eventually end up in the sea surounding Tenerife, or rivers elsewhere, so that any product or noxious chemical, mixed with the water, will end up harming the environment. The law distinguishes three types of fines: very severe,

Lifestyle

Wash, repair or spray cars? severe and not severe. It depends on each town hall what fine would be applied, but they can range between very severe (€500- 3,000), severe (€750-1.500) and not severe (€30-120). Another thing to remember is that the owners would be fined, and not the person carrying out the work.

Repairing and spraying cars on the side of the road has a whole load of other issues attached to it. All oil and liquids from vehicles must be disposed of correctly. By law, they cannot be put in the bin, or allowed to drain into the road. Spraying cars without the use of proper equipment

and purification has major, environmental and health impacts, because the pollutants are being inhaled by passers-by, and the chemicals are going straight into the atmosphere, without being purified. Can you wash, repair or spray your car in a communal garage?

Here, the law is a bit more ambiguous. It could be considered a misuse of communal areas, and more so if communal water or electricity is employed. Article 394 of the civil code states that each member of a community has the right to use a communal area, as long as the use is appropriate, and doesn’t hinder or harm the interest of the community, or other community members. Again, with regards to repairing and spraying, the law is clear: all liquids must be disposed of, and spraying has to be carried out with the correct purification equipment, which must not be absorbed directly into the air. Can you wash, repair or spray your car in your own private garage? Yes, you can do all three jobs in your own private garage, but all applicable laws and rules, regarding safety, disposal and environment, must be followed.

Entertainment

8th March 2019 - 14th March 2019

Sergio’s on the up! KEDDY’S Entertainment prides itself on identifying and promoting international, up-and-coming, “world-wide talent”.

So we are pleased to introduce Madrid-born Sergio Belmonte, a talented musician and singer-songwriter. It was very interesting interviewing Sergio, and hearing his story. He told us that music is in his blood, and runs in his family. “My aunt is a musician and singer, and my dad is a selftaught musician. I pretty much grew up with music, but there was a moment in my life when I realised it was what I truly wanted to do.” Sergio is the eldest of four siblings. He lived in his parents’ home-town of Aranjuez, slightly south of Madrid, where almost all his family still live. He moved to Dallas, Texas, when he was three years old, because his father was studying there, and they stayed for three years. The family moved back to Spain for a year, then returned to the States for another three, so his father could finish his Master’s degree, this time in Virginia Beach, VA. “I grew up listening to my dad playing the piano, guitar and drums. I played around with toy instruments throughout my childhood, but it wasn’t until I was about eight that I started studying music and piano. This was while we were still living in Virginia.” After returning to Aranjuez, Sergio continued studying music and piano. “I played in a band with my friends and was practically forced to sing, and that’s when it all started! I began to realise just how much I enjoyed singing, and began learning everything I could from friends who were singers, observing different classes with several various teachers, as well as researching the internet.” Sergio explained that when he was about 18, he decided to begin taking his singing career much more seriously. He then started to take voice lessons.

By this time, he came to realise that he wanted to focus all his efforts on singing. So he made the decision to put his piano training on hold, focusing entirely on his vocal training. “Songwriting has been a huge part of my journey in my musical career. I can’t remember the specific moment when I began writing songs. But I do know that it was sometime during my early, teenage years. Initially, I started dabbling and messing around with notepads, sound bites and voice memos. Little by little, songs began to emerge, some good, and others not so good.” With time, composing songs began to come much more naturally and easily. After a while, he wanted to progress to producing and recording them. But finding a studio and a producer, that were both affordable and professional, wasn’t an easy task. Just as he was starting to record his songs, he and his family moved to Tenerife! Sergio was not daunted, and, as soon as he arrived, he began looking in earnest for a place to continue his music studies. He particularly wanted to mention and thank “AMAE”, for being so

supportive and helpful. “I can’t begin to explain how much the school’s warm welcome, patience, and genuine interest in my career and well-being have meant to me. Coming to Tenerife has definitely been a turning point in my music career and personal life.” Sergio really appreciates the vocal coaching and guidance he has received, and he has met some wonderfully-encouraging and professional people. He has now recorded, coproduced, and successfully released, three singles, one of which has received the award for “best original song” at the Jóvenes Promesas Arona festival, in November 2018. His music is now available on all digital stores and

streaming platforms, under his name. Sergio is also active on many socialmedia platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, and you can also take a look at his YouTube channel, to see some behind-the-scenes clips, the story behind his songs, and lyric videos. Sergio pays a great deal of attention to his lyrics, making the message behind each song the centre of his music. “I want to present the world with something honest and relevant, and what we can relate to. My music is a celebration of life. “It’s a reminder that you are enough, that you are valued, and that you are loved. It aspires to be a glimmer of hope, in the midst of darkness and desperation. It hopes

to point you to the future, looking to the past only to learn, and not to be defined by it. It’s a wake-up call, and a story of new beginnings!” Keddy’s Entertainment were most impressed by his passion and commitment, and they positively shine through! Sergio wanted to finish his story by thanking his family for believing in him and backing him. “They supported my crazy dreams,” he added. Keddy’s Entertainment is confident that the future holds a great deal of success for this incredibly-talented and driven young musician. We can’t wait to see where his passion for music will take him next. Watch this space, and catch Sergio on YouTube https://www. youtube.com/channel/ UCR85KT9xv5DFK5LKle_NSmw So, until next time, it’s adiós from Keddy’s Entertainment, and remember to always reach for your dreams. There is an opportunity to join our ever-growing animation team, here at Keddy’s Entertainment in Tenerife, with a great salary, benefits, including a full contract starting at the end of April 2019, and plenty of fun in the sun. Palms so happy in defeat THE Division 1 catch-up games threw up a couple of surprises, and Palms Pool Bar were chuffed with the final score when they hosted highflying Gaffers.

Lynn, expecting an 8-0 defeat, played well to beat her Gaffer opponent, and, with a doubles and trebles win took an impressive three points. But Gaffers responded, eventually, and edged home 5-3. The Pub, who went to Suters 20:30 Crew with high hopes, came away with a superb 5-3 win to reach the top of the table, where three teams are separated by just

Football IT seemed to be the opportunity of a lifetime for Wales football international Gareth Bale: a bigmoney move from the Premiership to the heady heights of Spain’s capital city, famous for its latenight lifestyle and buzzing social scene. But Bale has failed to pick up the lingo, and he prefers a game of golf than a slapup meal with his Real Madrid team-mates. The Welshman, signed from Tottenham for around €90m

Loner Bale’s hardly Madrid’s Real deal

in 2013, usually heads to bed early, and keeper Thibaut Courtois, who joined the side from Chelsea last summer, suggests that Bale, 29, has yet to adapt to the Spanish lifestyle, after six years at the club. In contrast, Courtois says: “I live like somebody who is born and bred in Madrid. I eat late, I go to bed late… it is their way of life. “The other night, we had dinner with the entire squad.

But Bale, and German midfielder Toni Kroos, did not turn up. They reckoned the dinner was too late at night. “We had arranged to be in the restaurant at 9.30pm and we started our meal around 10.15pm. By midnight, we were having coffee.” The Frenchman said the squad went to bed at about 1am, and trained each morning, from 11am. “That is a perfect time,” he said. “But Bale told us, ‘I am not coming

to join you guys. I go to bed at 11.’” Another team-mate, Marcelo, confirmed that the footballer from Cardiff did not speak Spanish. “He speaks only English, and we talk with gestures,” said the Brazilian. This revelation comes after Bale’s negative treatment by the Spanish press, who have dubbed the Welsh winger “Mister Glass”, after his persistent injuries.
