Quartet monopolised the drug sales in El Medano

Continued from Front

The officers called the operation “Proditor”, and, as a result of their success, three men and a woman were arrested and charged.

All four, Spanish, Columbian and Uruguayan nationals, have lived in Medano for many years. And, over time, they have built up a customer

base, as well as monopolising the sale of illegal substances in the area. A major investigation was launched in the middle of last year, after the Guardia Civil received several items of information about a group of people selling drugs, specifically hashish and cocaine, from various apartments in the town’s residential areas. After many months of surveillance, the officers concluded that all the group members were rewarded,

economically, from the drug sales, not only in Medano, but in other towns across the South of Tenerife. None of the quartet worked, yet each one maintained a high standard of living, frequenting exclusive bars and restaurants across the south of the island. During the investigation, it was revealed that the apartments in which they were, supposedly, living, were treated like shops, with people coming

and going throughout the day… almost daily! And when there was an influx of customers, the apartment owner kept clear, leaving responsibility to a third party. Officers were given the go-ahead to launch an indepth probe, after collecting enough evidence to prove that there were illegal drugdealings in the town, on a huge scale. They then took the individuals by surprise, conducting a search of the properties during

the early hours of 1st March. The agents seized 12,000 euros in cash, 400gm of cocaine, a kilo of a cutting agent, and utensils used for drug distribution, as well as simulated firearms and four, high-end vehicles. A judge has ordered three of the people responsible to be detained, provisionally. But all four, accused of belonging to a criminal group involving drug-trafficking, have been charged with crimes against public health.

SOME 10,000 cases of animal abandonment were registered in Spain and the islands last year, and an insensitive sign (our headline), stuck on the side of a cage, explains the sorry attitude of some people. On further inspection, there was a rabbit inside the cage, and sources have reported that a taxi driver found the poor mite. Apparently, he noticed a small cage next to rubbish containers while driving his taxi around the Los Realejos area, and, as well as the sign, he saw that a bag of animal food had been left next to the cage. The taxi driver told the authorities he had noticed a rabbit, which looked as though it had been dumped near the bins on a busy road. Local Police officers collected the abandoned animal and took it to the animal refuge, where it will stay until it can be rehomed properly.

Six Boeing 737 MAX stranded in Canaries SIX Boeing 737 MAX 8 passenger planes have been stranded at two airports in the Canaries, now that the European Union has joined China, India, Mongolia, Ethiopia and Australia in grounding them all.

Five at Gran Canaria airport, along with one at Tenerife South, have been taken out of use, the latter being a Thomson craft and the others including a TUI and a Travel Service. Of the Gran Canaria Boeings, three are operated by lowcost carrier Norwegian, which runs regular flights from several Spanish airports, to and from the UK, and is a relatively new service, launched some seven years ago. The European Air Safety Agency (EASA) has issued an emergency announcement

calling for all Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to be grounded. Spain’s airport governing body, AENA, says two Norwegian flights had to be cancelled at the last minute, although passengers were placed on other aircraft run by the same company, which reached their destinations with minimal delay. Also, says AENA, a TUI flight between Banjul (Gambia) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands) was given the order in mid-air to land immediately at the nearest airport, which turned out to be Gran Canaria. Passengers were given an impromptu mini-break in the Canary Islands because the sudden landing meant they had to be put up in hotels on the island overnight. There were two crashes in six months, involving a Lion Air internal flight in October between Jakarta and Pangkal Pinang, and the recent Ethiopian Airlines tragedy which killed 157 passengers and crew,

including seven Brits and two Spaniards, as well as dozens of United Nations employees and aid workers. The tragedies have led to a dramatic halt in the use of these aircraft until technical reviews are carried out. In both accidents, the aircraft were new, or had been in use for just a year or so. As for the Ethiopian Airlines pilot, the company said his record was impeccable and he was really experienced,

Cyclists and motorists ignoring road courtesy

IMAGES have been spread across social media of a dangerous driver in the vicinity of Teide, who virtually terrorised other motorists and cyclists. But another video depicts a cyclist, dodging in and out of traffic, and, literally, dicing with death. One vehicle was recorded by cyclist Ramon, who posted a video showing how the driver overtook other vehicles dangerously, and, narrowly, missed a head-on crash with him. Once the incident spread across social media, the Guardia Civil decided to take action, and officers contacted Ramon, seeking

an official complaint from him. The officers then traced the motorist, who was charged with reckless driving, fined 200 euros and had four points deducted from his driving licence. The video, although short, gives an insight of the danger cyclists experience on Tenerife roads, demonstrating how the driver showed little or no respect for cyclists, or fellow motorists occupying the same road. But Ramon said cyclists were now accustomed to dangerous situations when out on their bikes. On this occasion, though, Ramon, who knew the car was coming, took out his

phone and filmed the driver, because he was aware of what could happen. However, his video has sparked a battle between cyclists and drivers, an irate motorist responding to Ramon’s with a horrific video of his own. It shows a cyclist weaving in and out of traffic, overtaking one car, and, at the same time, darting between another one coming towards him. He was lucky not have been crushed between the two motors, but the two videos will not lead to many riders or drivers adopting a courteous manner when travelling.

with over 8,000 flying hours under his belt. Air crashes are normally caused by technical problems, human error, or, in some cases, natural disasters or weather conditions, although pilots will divert round these or request emergency landings if they are likely to pose a danger, say aviation experts. And, according to a BBC television report, crashes in new aircraft

“just do not happen”. Josep Borrell, Spain’s Foreign Minister, left Addis Ababa airport, hours before the doomed craft, destined for the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, took off and then crashed just six minutes into its flight, some 26 miles from the Ethiopian city. Although a handful of African airlines are on the European Union’s banned list, Ethiopian Airlines was not one of them, and is a modern company which exceeds all international standards. Borrell said Addis Ababa airport was one of the most modern and high-tech on earth. He had been in Ethiopia for the AmChamSpain global business and competition conference, along with every Spanish ambassador on the African continent. According to the Foreign Minister, a number of Spanish business professionals were set to fly to Nairobi on the ET302, but changed their tickets at the last minute, thus, saving their lives.

Paraglider dies after drifting from group

A FRENCH paraglider died while taking part in the sport, after becoming detached from a group, who all landed safely in Puertito de Güímar, as planned.

The 30-year-victim, in cardiorespiratory arrest, was found in a ravine at Fasnia, and an emergency rescue helicopter was called in to fly him to Tenerife North Airport. From there, he was transferred to hospital by ambulance. But, despite administering CPR, medical staff were unable to save him. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the accident.

Noisy group’s gunfire terrified the residents

22nd March 2019 - 28th March 2019

NEIGHBOURS in the El Cardinal town of Taco La Laguna were frightened out of their wits last weekend, when they heard gunfire, and what seemed to be several people having a loud argument on the street.

The noise became worse and worse, involving a lot of abusive shouting, so residents decided to alert the Canarian emergency services of the situation, as well as requesting a police presence. On closer inspection, they realised there were four people involved, and, suddenly, one of them pulled a gun out from under his jacket and began firing shots in the air. Fortunately, they were blanks, but the emergency services, who had arrived by then,

activated an emergency protocol. Local Police were notified and dispatched to areas across the municipality, until members from the security forces arrived. But by the time the National Police arrived, the four people causing the disturbance had already fled. Officers quickly began a search of the area, which

proved fruitless, but they opened an investigation to identify the individuals, who were said to be arguing about settling debts. Officers from the Police and the security forces remained in the area, and across the municipality, for some time. Unfortunately, they were unable to find or identify any of the individuals involved.

Shoppers can use their own plastic boxes now

CUSTOMERS at Carrefour’s 1,000-plus supermarkets in Spain can now cut down on their own plastic waste at home. Whether you’re concerned about your plastic footprint, or are fed up with how quickly your rubbish bin fills up, this is good news if you’re shopping for groceries at the supermarket giants.

It will allow customers to bring their own food-storage containers to carry their fruit, veg, fish, meat and cold meats inside their own glass or plastic containers, before leaving the store.

That will save their items from having to be wrapped up in paper, or picked in a Carrefour plastic bag or container, which have been their only options until now. The only rules shoppers need know is that their food containers must be transparent and come with lids. For fruit and vegetables, customers will also be allowed to bring their carrier bags to the store. Carrefour’s move, part of its “Act for food” campaign, aims to cut down on plastic use in its own food chain, and for its shoppers to do the same at home. The food retailer has also launched its first biodegradable tray for fish and seafood, and has reduced the overall weight of the food packaging.

A GUARDIA Civil officer, who caused a fatal pileup while driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, has been jailed for four years, and ordered to pay €1.44m compensation. The unnamed officer caused a pile up on the Torremolinos A-7 in 2017, killing three people and injuring a further nine, many of them seriously. The agent, drunk and high on cocaine, was travelling at 150km/h in a 100km/h stretch of the Costa del Sol motorway, according to the court ruling. The fatal crash occurred when he smashed into a BMW car in the right-hand lane, then collided with a taxi, causing it to spin in circles. It left three taxi passengers dead, and two with serious injuries. The agent was found guilty

of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, reckless driving and three crimes of death by serious negligence, along with nine crimes of reckless injury. The judge said: “The defendant is found criminally liable on the basis of two essential factors: he was responsible for the death of three people, as well as the injuries suffered by nine others because he drove, heavily-affected by the consumption of alcohol and psychotropic substances; in this case, cocaine, and speeding.” The judge sentenced the officer to four years in prison, and a five-year driving ban. The court also ordered him to pay compensation of €1.44m to the families of the deceased and the injured.

NEWS IN BRIEF German cyclist’s ravine fall

A GERMAN man, aged 59, was injured last Sunday after falling from his bicycle into a Fasnia ravine. The Canarian emergency services were informed by an anonymous caller, who said the cyclist had tumbled some 20 metres into the Barranco de San Joaquín, while out riding his bike on the TF-28. The ambulance team assessed the individual on arrival and diagnosed severe bruising. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment and observation.

Fake doctor conned women into having dangerous lip jabs

Illegal tortoise transporter

A ROUTINE Guardia Civil check on vehicles coming off a ferry from North Africa led to the discovery of a protected species of Mora tortoise, in a van. Officers found the tortoises, none relating to the appropriate documentation, in a box on top of the dashboard. The Guardia detained a 39-year-old man for transporting the tortoises without “Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species” (CITES) papers, issued by a member state administrative authority.

Irishman’s TF-1 bridge fall

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil Traffic Department were first at the scene to assist a 33-year-old Irishman, who fell from a bridge. A telephone operator from the Canarian emergency services was informed that a person had fallen from the bridge, on to the TF-1 in the Adeje municipality. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital by an emergency ambulance. National Police are looking into the events that occurred before the accident.

Wanted UK paedo caught

NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a suspected paedophile in the Almeria town of Albox, wanted in connection with 53 incidents of sexual abuse in the UK, spread over more than 40 years. A police statement said the fugitive was believed to have sexually-abused family members, aged between five and 16, between 1956 and 2000. Close collaboration between the Spanish police and the British National Crime Agency led to the location and arrest of the man, near his Albox home.

Officers keeping an eye out

NATIONAL Police officers are investigating how a noxious substance was released at a disco in Spain, leaving 15 people suffering with eye irritation, shortness of breath and vomiting. Two Local Police officers were among those affected, at a nightclub called Lio The Show, in Almendralejo, Badajoz. Eight people, aged 18-37, were treated at the local hospital. Police are now studying the club’s CCTV footage to try to identify the culprit.

A FEMALE pensioner, posing as a retired doctor in Gran Canaria, has been injecting a dangerous substance into women’s lips, and charging them 150 euros per session. But the 69-year-old, whose identity is not known, was arrested by the National Police after several complaints had been received from customers, who were physically scared and emotionally scarred. They all showed the same

symptoms, as well as suffering the same side-effects after being injected with silicone, having being told the substance was hyaluronic acid, normally used as a temporary filler to remove wrinkles or lines. All the procedures were performed by the fraudulent doctor, and the affected women were admitted to special clinics to have the silicone extracted. The fraudster assured her clients that she was a professional, who used to work as a doctor at the local hospital. She performed all the beauty treatments from her local

hairdresser, in the Escalerita area, or from her own home, where she was later arrested. The Canaries’ National Police chief said the investigation began at the end of January, when one woman made an official complaint about the fake doctor. Seven other women have since reported the fraudster, all having received the same treatment, and all suffering with similar, unpleasant sideeffects. The pretend doctor, who has been charged with crimes against public health, is awaiting an appearance before a judge.

Fortunately, he threw the phone to the ground before it literally went up in flames. He then called the telephone company several times to report what had happened. But, according to his family, the company would not take responsibility, telling him to report the incident to Samsung, which is exactly what he did. The man, naturally, is displeased with telephone company Jazztel, for its lack of customer service, especially

as he recently changed contracts from another telephone operator. He is not only unhappy with the company, but also with Korean mobile telephone manufactures Samsung. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured, but he had minor fingertip burns. But he was also shocked that a new mobile phone could go up in flames. Mainly, though, he is more upset with the treatment he received from the phone operator.

Flaming heck - this new mobile phone’s ablaze AN Arona man has made an official complaint about an unusually-dangerous incident, involving his brand-new Samsung A7 mobile phone, but to no avail! He had the phone in his hands, when, suddenly, it began to get hot, and he felt his fingers burning. And when he looked at the mobile, he saw smoke coming from it.

Thousands of student protesters strike over climate-change issue STUDENTS in more 40 Spanish towns and cities joined the global strike last Friday, calling for political action on climate change.

Teresa Ribera, Spain’s Energy Transition Minister, encouraged as many students as possible to join in the worldwide strike, which took place in 1,600 towns and cities in 105 countries, involving the education community in the main Kids from Spanish primary schools and upwards joined in, since their teachers considered it a learning opportunity. And numerous primary and secondary schools in Spain have joined the #TeachersForFuture movement, started by primary tutor Miriam Leirós, from O Porriño, in Galicia’s Pontevedra province. Over 280 university professors and researchers even signed an open letter to worldwide

politicians, calling for action. Doctor Amaranta Herrero, of Barcelona Autonomous University (UAB), says the strike represented a “generational injustice”, since climate change had been forgotten about until now. He added that today’s young people would be more affected by it than anyone, given that the oft-cited 2050 is just 31 years away, which means that anyone in school today will be aged between 34 and 49 by then. By 2050, experts believe air pollution, toxins in water and food, and “super-bugs”, resistant to even the most

sophisticated antibiotics, will, mainly, be direct causes of death. They also believe that the planet’s temperature will have risen by an average of 5ºC, which would be enough to cause the Poles to have melted significantly. The experts also say it will accelerate the greenhouse effect, as carbon dioxide, frozen into the layers of ice and snow, is released into the atmosphere and the seas, causing a rising acid level in the latter, and killing off fish used for food. Florent Marcellesi, MEP for Los Verdes, says the “electoral storm” in April and May, over

Spain and the rest of Europe, is the perfect opportunity for the public to demand fair and firm responses to climate change. Yet the strike was not just about a protest march, but an educational movement with informative activities, organised across the country. In A Coruña (Galicia), for example, documentaries were projected in the city’s open-air main squares, while talks and conferences took place to widen public debate, according to A Coruña University architecture student Javier Muíños Pereira, who was one of the organisers. Granada, Salamanca, Castellón, San Sebastián, Girona, Valencia, Madrid and Barcelona were just a handful of the cities expected to have been involved, and various international campaign groups helped organise them. The groups involved say they are planning further demonstrations, and, possibly, every Friday!

Pedro’s euthanasia pledge SPAIN’S Prime Minister has said his left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) party will legalise euthanasia if it maintains power, following the snap general election on Sunday, 28th April.

Pedro Sanchez, attending a campaign event in Galacia’s La Coruña City, said a PSOE Government would recognise the right to euthanasia and to dignified dying. Efforts to legalise euthanasia have been mounted since PSOE took power as a minority government last June. But these have been blocked by the conservative Partido Popular (PP) and the centrist Ciudadanos. Euthanasia supporters argue that it gives people with terminal or debilitating illnesses the option to die on their own terms, and spare themselves more suffering. But opponents claim euthanasia could be abused if a terminally-ill person were not of sound mind when making the choice. And the opposition also criticises it on religious grounds.

50% of Canarian tomato harvest is sent to Britain

REPRESENTATIVES from the Canarian Government, and the islands’ tomato and cucumber growers, have asked Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture to continue maintaining its aid to agriculture and transport, given the situation generated by Brexit. Abel Morales, Deputy Councillor of the Government’s Primary Sector, had a meeting with Fernando Miranda, the Ministry of Agriculture’s Secretary General, and later revealed that 50% of the Canary tomato harvest was exported to the UK, with 6,000 direct and indirect jobs depending on this activity. The Canary Islands export an average of 37,500 tons of vegetables, fruit, tubers, cut flowers, plants and medicinal herbs and plants to the British market, annually. “Agricultural trade with the UK has been on-going for more than 130 years, and we want it to continue,” said Morales. “That is why it is necessary for the transport and agricultural sector to be maintained, through the POSEI programme. This support is intended for the marketing of products to EU countries.” María José Rallo del Olmo, Transport Secretary-General of Spain’s Development Ministry, was unaware of the situation faced by the Canarian tomato sector because of Brexit. But after meeting Miranda, he said the department was no longer concerned. With regard to Brexit, Morales said earlier: “We must be prepared for every conceivable situation, to defend the Canary growers with all our might.” Francisco Echandi, President of the Association of Growers and Shippers of Tenerife (ACETO) acknowledged “the concern in the Canary tomato sector because of Brexit”. He added: “Without aid, tomato cultivation would become unprofitable and the activity would, therefore, be jeopardised.”

Tenerife gang’s nutrition pill was danger to health

Airline apologises to woman with crop top

BRITISH airline Thomas Cook has apologised to a 21-year-old woman over what cabin crew deemed “inappropriate attire”, and who told her she would be booted off because she “caused offence”.

The Spanish Tax agency joined forces with the National Police to dismantle a gang of people, selling fake tablets disguised as nutritional pills, containing substances which are a potential danger to health.

During the operation, 18 people were charged, and 400,000 pills confiscated. The pills originated in China, and officers discovered that they were being distributed, through the post, across Spain, Germany, France, Italy and the UK. The nutritional product had been tampered with, and

tadalafilo y sildenafilo, an anti-erectile dysfunctional drug, is not mentioned on the list of nutritional ingredients. But it could be dangerous to people susceptible to sideeffects. The National Police and Tax Office believe the gang have been operating from Tenerife for some time. They also have an Alicante base at a logistics centre, where the product was stored and distributed across Spain. The police operation was a success, because, from 19 people detained, all were charged, bar one: 11 in Tenerife, five in Alicante, one in Las Palmas and the other in Granada. On top of the arrests, the 400,000 pills were confiscated, along with 50,000 euros in

cash, 27 mobile phones and 22 laptops. Authorities began an investigation after discovering that the gang members were selling illegal medicine on a website, camouflaged as nutritional supplements. On further investigation, officers found that the supplement was being sold by a Santa Cruz person. They also discovered that the individual was selling the same product on various websites. Authorities stress that the gang were not only guilty of selling illegal supplements, but guilty, also, of omitting the pills’ active ingredients, which carry a potentially-high risk because they could affect the health of some buyers.

Emily O’Connor, who was travelling on a flight from Birmingham to Tenerife earlier this month, asked fellow passengers if they were offended by her clothing when she was confronted by the cabin crew. She was wearing highwaisted pants and a cropped top with spaghetti straps, and no one said Yes! Emily told Yahoo UK: “It was so mortifying, and I was so upset. They could clearly see that, yet they continued to note how inappropriate and offensive I was. I was really close to crying.” She said there was further humiliation when the incident was announced over the plane’s speakers. But she was allowed to stay on board, finally, when a cousin sitting elsewhere on the plane gave her a jacket to wear. She informed British TV that she wasn’t wearing a jacket when she boarded the plane

because, she said, she told airline staff: “I was hot.” She also noted that a man wearing just a vest and shorts on the plane was not challenged by the cabin crew. The humbled airline said in a statement to Yahoo: “We are sorry that we upset Ms O’Connor. It’s clear we could have handled the situation better.” Yet the statement insisted that the “appropriate attire policy” applied equally to men and women of all ages, adding: “Our crews have the difficult task of implementing that policy and don’t always get it right.” Several people responding to Emily’s Twitter posts, defending her, and some who said they worked for the airline, noted that men wearing far less had not been confronted. The “appropriate attire policy” doesn’t appear to be listed anywhere on the airline’s website, and what does exist on its inflight magazine is extremely short on details. “Customers wearing inappropriate attire (including items with offensive slogans or images) will not be permitted to travel until a change of clothes is possible,” states the policy. “Footwear must be worn on the aircraft.”

Couple charged with killing man in a wheelchair

A MAN and woman, aged 43 and 50 respectively, have been charged with the alleged murder of a 61-year-old vagrant, who lived in an abandoned building in the south of Gran Canaria.

The Canarian Emergency Services informed the police after receiving a call about a body, which had been found. The police discovered that the poor Romanian chap had been strangled, then burned to death, at the place he called home, in the Playa del ingles area. Neighbours from San Fernando, in Maspalomas and the Playa del Ingles area, were familiar with the individual, who was an amputee, and always in his wheelchair. The officers began their investigation on 11th January, immediately after receiving a call about the horrific find. After an intensive two months, the officers had collected sufficient evidence to determine the murderers. Officers located and charged the Spaniard, who already has a police record, and they charged his Irish companion, who had no history with the law. With the help of the collective evidence, the officers obtained a court order, giving them permission to conduct a home search of the two suspects. They gathered evidence from items of clothing, worn on the day the crime was committed, and, after collecting sufficient evidence, both individuals, registered at an address in the south of Gran Canaria, charged them with murder. They are now awaiting a court appearance before a judge.

Baby and child, 3, are found buried in squatters’ grounds TWO children, aged just five months old and three years, who disappeared in Valencia last Thursday, were found dead by Guardia Civil officers the following day, after the mother led them to their buried bodies.

They were discovered, some 80 yards from each other, in different sites near the home their squatter parents, aged around 30, had occupied illegally. Autopsies have been carried out on the children, who lived with their parents, Belgian Gabriel Salvador, and Maria, from Colombia, both said to suffer mental health problems. The alarm came after a neighbour heard earlymorning screams. She saw the mother running around naked and covered in blood, being chased by the husband, who was also bloodied. But when Guardia officers arrived, they found

the father alone. He is alleged to have told them that he wanted to go back to Belgium, because he had nothing to do there, adding: “They are all dead.” He said his wife had “immersed herself in a pool” to try to reincarnate the children after drowning them. Police then found a disturbing

note, painted on a wall, which read: “You’re all going to die”, although this was unrelated to the event. At that point, however, more than 100 officers and a helicopter were roped into the search around the house, and in the neighbouring towns in Godella, Rocafort and Moncada.

Wanted Brit perv is caught in Benidorm A WANTED British pervert, accused of sexually-abusing his two teenage stepdaughters, has been arrested in Benidorm by the National Police, in collaboration with the UK’s National Crime Agency.

They said he had changed his appearance considerably to make the locating of him difficult. But that didn’t fool the forces! He was arrested under a European Arrest Warrant and is now in police custody, awaiting a deportation hearing in Madrid. The man has been charged with 10 crimes against sexual freedom, by continuously abusing his stepdaughters, both minors, aged 13 and 14. The National Police said in a statement: “According to the UK authorities, the accused would go into the girls’ bedroom, regularly, where he would sexually touch them.”

Violent plane punch-up ends with two men held A VIDEO, posted on Twitter, shows the moment two men began a fight on a Ryanair flight from Glasgow Prestwick to Tenerife, with one of them having his nose bitten off.

The incident happened last Sunday and lasted for about 30 seconds… but witnesses said the incident felt like an eternity. The recording, made by passenger Ben Wardrop, shows total chaos on board the budget airline, with distressed cabin-crew members trying to break up the fight. Ben said it all kicked off when a female passenger did not put her shoes on as she got up to visit the toilet. A fellow passenger, who was clearly drunk, warned her that someone would tread on her toes. Out of nowhere, a discussion began, and the woman’s partner became involved, even though he was simply attempting to calm the situation. Cabin-crew members and passengers were clearly unsettled, shouting for the instigators to stop. And

people of all ages witnessed how, apparently, one of the men had his nose bitten off. But witnesses explained how the airline staff handled the situation really well, saying they knew exactly what to do, and how to separate both men. Yet images of the incident show blood splattered across the overhead baggage compartments. No wonder that, upon arrival, Spanish police were waiting for both men, who were arrested as soon as they alighted.

Bully’s threat to murder his wife

GUARDIA Civil officers, in collaboration with the Local Police, arrested a man last Friday, charging him with domestic violence at his home in Adeje’s El Galeon area.

A discussion broke out between both parties, which then turned violent, and the husband threatened to kill his wife. The wife, apparently terrified that the situation would get out of control, went to the Guardia Civil Station in the Las Torres area. She made an official complaint against her husband, telling officers in a statement that she feared for

her life. She said he struck her, regularly, and that he had just threatened to shoot her. When the police asked her about the gun, she said her husband possessed it because he practised Olympic shooting. Officers went to the couple’s home, immediately, to speak with the accused, only to find that he had disappeared. Inside, however, they found the firearm, along with the corresponding hand-gun licences. Police, who found him the same evening, arrested the husband and charged him with domestic violence and threatening behaviour. He was then locked up, and was held until being presented before a magistrate in the Arona court house.

A 48-YEAR-OLD man was arrested and charged with fraud last weekend by Guardia Civil officers, based in Gran Canaria’s Santa Maria de Guía. The man, who already had a string of offences to his name, was charged after spending 700 euros on a credit card he found inside a wallet. The wallet owner reported it missing as soon as he realised he had lost it, and inside were credit and ID cards, as well as cash and other personal items. He noticed that there had been a series of unrecognised movements made from one of the cards, with sums amounting to some 700 euros. Investigating officers located the card movement to Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, and, as well as using the card for transactions at certain establishments, the thief was also using it to withdraw money from cash points. Guardia officers found the thief, and, once identified, he was charged with fraudulent crimes. The case is now in the hands of the Santa Maria de Guia Court.

Spanish are fittest race on the planet

22nd March 2019 - 28th March 2019

A WORLD health index has revealed that Spain has the fittest nation on the planet, after being ranked second last year.

The University of Washington’s Health Metrics Institute put the country second in its healthy-nations league. But another major rating agency, the Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index, has gone one better and placed it top of its rankings. The index classifies nations, according to variables such as life expectancy, tobaccouse and obesity. And environmental factors, such as access to clean water and sanitation, are also taken into account. The index gives Spain the highest life expectancy at birth, among European Union nations, and forecasts that by 2040, it will have the world’s longest lifespan, at almost 86 years, followed by Japan,

Singapore and Switzerland. Tobacco-use is the only factor on which Spain does not score well, but the big plus appears to be its diet. Bloomberg quotes from a study by the University of Navarra Medical School, which concludes that eating habits are the key to the health levels enjoyed by Spain, and also by Italy, placed second in the

Bloomberg index. “Mediterranean diet, supplemented with extravirgin olive oil or nuts, had a lower rate of major cardiovascular events than those assigned to a reducedfat diet,” said the study. Spain’s high health ranking may convince many British expats that they have made a wise move. But the health bonus kicks in if they are

prepared to live a Spanish lifestyle. That much-vaunted diet includes a large volume of fish, together with a moderate intake of red wine. The lesson is: eat and drink like a Spaniard; just don’t smoke like one! Unfortunately, many Britons appear to do it the other way around, which may explain the UK’s No.19 ranking on the list. Bloomberg praises Spain’s

public health system, but expats find that access to it is limited, and Brexit may curtail that even further for British citizens, although it seems likely that their rights will be preserved. Spain operates a combination of private and public health care, with the latter available on a contributionbased system. That means you have to pay into the social security system if you and your dependents want access to free health-care. Since more than 50% of Spanish hospitals are owned privately, most expats believe private health insurance is a wise precaution. In particular, those intending to retire in Spain need to plan for the possibility of deteriorating health. Most Spanish pensioners are looked after by their own families. But, unless you are fortunate enough to have family members close by, you may need to pay for care.

Man said to have starved Spanish festival to disabled brother to death be held in London

A MAN aged 38 has been arrested in Granada, on suspicion of starving to death his disabled brother, and continuing to claim his benefits.

The suspect could face up to 15 years in prison after his brother, for whom he was legal guardian, is alleged to have died in his care, before being buried on the farm they shared.

According to Social Services, the older brother had a legal duty to care for his 35-yearold sibling, following the death of their parents. Social Services officials became concerned about the victim at the end of February, following claims that the suspect was a druguser, and after they failed to hear from the younger man. A court gave the Guardia Civil permission to search their farm, and, finding no one there, officers tracked the older man down to a

Motril hostel in Granada, Southern Spain, where he was said to have told them his brother was with a relative in Soria. But after agents discovered that the only relative there had died 16 years earlier, the man confessed, allegedly, telling officers that his brother had died, and that he had buried him in the mountainside. A subsequent post-mortem is believed to have found that the victim died of malnutrition.

THE company which organises Tenerife markets and events is proud to announce that the contract for a major London Spanish Festival, awarded to them last year, has been renewed. It was massively successful, and it will, again, be held at probably one of the top tourist destinations in London, and even the UK the Portobello Green area of the Portobello Road markets area, which attracts over 13.1 million visitors a year, from all over the world. Besides being awarded the prestigious Tenerife award for tourism by CIT Sur, a spokesman for our organisation said that this much-sought-after contract has been won by what was suggested as being, possibly, the finest market organisation in Europe. Our organisation is thankful to all our traders, and the tourists who are attracted to our markets, year after year. But to receive such a prestigious acknowledgement in our very special field is credited to the traders, who attend our events, both in Tenerife and the UK. Our Spanish festival in London is solely for Spanish traders and Spanish-owned

companies, and, shortly, over 500 invitations will be sent, inviting them to the next major event in the famous Portobello Road, London. This is most probably the most prestigious and attended event for any business, municipality or corporate organisation, wanting to increase their association with English tourists. If any trader in the Canary Islands feels they would like to be represented at this hugelypublicised event, please contact our Spanish office, BLV S.L. email: nstenerife@ yahoo.com

Persistent man tried to smoke out cave-dweller

GUARDIA Civil agents arrested a 42-yearold local man from Tinoca, Gran Canaria, who was accused of trying to get a cavedweller to move out, by burning in and around his habitat.

The Spanish National was charged with coercion, injuring a person, and damaging a property. Guardia officers took action after an official complaint had been made by the cave-dweller, who told officers he had been physically attacked. He also reported the fire, which had been started deliberately. His most recent attempts happened last week, when the dweller’s total belongings went up in flames. It caused him a lot of distress, because he had little finance

available, and the final blaze was fierce enough for the fire services to be contacted to put the flames out. Guardia Civil officers were also at the scene because the inhabitant was sleeping inside the cave at the time. Once the fire had been doused, locals reported that the aggressor returned to the cave to harass the cave man further. And the following day, while the stunned inhabitant was completing an official report at the Guardia Civil headquarters, the persistent attacker returned to the cave and lit a third fire, this time outside the cave. Guardia Civil agents, since the first complaint, had collected enough evidence on security cameras, as well as witnessing the arsonist buying fuel, to arrest and charge him. He is now awaiting a court hearing.

Air rage triggers flyers’ booze ban

Red triangles now trouble for traffic EMERGENCY red triangles, required by law to be carried in vehicles in case of an accident or breakdown, could be replaced by the year, for safety’s sake.

Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), part of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport infrastructure, believe there is a high risk posed to drivers when getting out of their vehicles on main roads. With that in mind, the DGT is considering a substitution in the form of a flashing light, although it has not yet confirmed how this would work. According to Assistant Deputy Director Ana Blanco, at least 20 people were killed on motorways last year by getting out of their cars and being run over. Many of them, victims of a breakdown or crash, were setting up their reflective red triangles, behind and in front of their vehicles, to warn approaching road-users. Of the 303 people who lost their lives on Spain’s motorways last year, around 20% were pedestrians, says Ms Blanco. She also points out that in the UK, it is illegal to set up red warning triangles on motorways and dual carriageways. Yet in Spain, it is compulsory to carry two of them in the car.

A new road-traffic regulation framework, currently under construction, will include advice on how to act in the event of an accident or breakdown, which will serve to bridge the gap while an alternative warning system is developed. But the DGT is aware that this must be highly adaptable, because as motoring technology evolves so quickly. Bartolomé Vargas, chief prosecutor for road safety, says a law already exists on how to use red triangles. But he insists: “It should be applied flexibly and in keeping with the circumstances of the accident or breakdown.” Spain’s National Amputees Association, ANDADE, is calling for more widelypublicised guidelines for what to do in the event of a crash. Chairwoman Noemí Antolín says drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other witnesses often put themselves at risk and become indirect accident victims. “The red triangle requirement carries a series of dangerous scenarios, which people are not conscious of until an accident happens,” she warns. “There are people who have lost limbs because of rushing to the scene to help crash victims, and being hit themselves,” she adds. “You need to be really careful when trying to help anyone involved in a roadtraffic accident. The DGT’s campaigns are good, but they’re not enough.”

AIR rage, encouraged by Duty Free booze, is becoming a problem for many UK airline companies.

And though serious incidents remain fairly rare, there is enough concern to prompt an all-out ban of alcohol, bought from airports’ World Duty Free shops. The chain, which has 22 stores in the country’s largest airports, including Heathrow, Manchester and Gatwick, is setting out to reinforce that ban, actively. Officials say they will prevent fliers from drinking their own booze on planes, by means of sealed plastic bags, says The Times newspaper. Most British airline companies already have in place a similar policy, which says you can’t open a container you brought on board the plane,

while you’re still in the air. In other words, if you want to drink anything, you’d better be ready to cough up the cash and buy from the flight attendant’s mobile cart. So, if you buy any alcoholic beverage from a World Duty Free shop, regardless of the bottle’s size, it will come in a sealed bag. All the bags are strong enough to warrant a knife or scissors to open them on the plane… and you won’t get either while aboard, because they’re not allowed! “The impact of these incidents can be serious for fellowpassengers, employees working in the air and at the airport,” said a spokesperson, admitting that drunken air rages were yet to become common. “The industry is working together to tackle this problem, and make

disruptive behaviour such as this socially unacceptable. “The vast majority of our customers understand that the alcohol we sell can be consumed only when they reach their destination, and this message is already conveyed clearly, at tills, on receipts and on bags.” A 2016 paper published by the Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) said the cost incurred by airlines because of air-rage incidents was “substantial”. “Costs may include fuel loss, airport-related costs and payments to other passengers for inconvenience caused,” the report said. Last year, a man found this out the hard way, when a Perth court ordered him to pay almost $26,000, after a Brisbane-bound Qantas flight was forced to return to base because of his unruly behaviour.

TO: Editor This may be of interest to your readers: Four of us got in to a fully-plated, official taxi at the Hotel Columbus taxi rank in Las Americas and asked the driver to take us to an address in Los Cristianos. I noticed that what appeared to be a mobile phone mounted on his dashboard, had a very professional “Taxi” app and had a running total of the cost of our trip. The official meter was lower down, and, while partly obscured, I could see it was running. When we got to our destination, the driver turned off the official meter and pointed to his “mobile phone”, indicating that we should pay the amount shown, which was 50% more expensive. We told him we wouldn’t pay what was shown, and if he objected, he could call the police. He eventually relented, switched his meter back on and we paid the official amount. Needless to say, we didn’t give a tip. Paul Kershaw, Merseyside Editor: We contacted the Adeje Co-op taxi firm and were assured that the mobile device on the dashboard enables drivers to keep in touch with headquarters, and gives general advice on traffic delays, and their next pick-up, etc. But under no circumstances does it clock the journey’s cost. Passengers should ask for a receipt, as well as making a note of the driver’s licence number if in any doubt.

THE fossil of a whale’s head, dating back around 5.7 million years, has been found in a Santanyí limestone quarry, on Mallorca. It is the first of its type ever found in the Mediterranean’s so-called “chalk strip”, and it was discovered inside a chunk of stone, weighing threequarters of a metric tonne, in a mine near S’Horta, which is in the Felanitx town. Archaeological team members from the University of the Balearic Islands’ (UIB’s) Earth Sciences Research Group, part of the Faculty of Biology, are convinced the fossil is a skull of a sea creature of the Mysticeti sub-order, which refers to baleen whales, so-named because of the series of baleen plates, instead of teeth, along their upper jaws, which act as a filter system. This sub-order is also known as “whalebone whales” or “great whales”, and this skull shares features typical of the Balaenopteridae family. These are referred to as “rorquals” and cover the fin whale, humpback whale and the blue whale, which is the largest species on earth and grows to 25 metres (82 feet) in length. Sightings of fin whales,

15 CW

Fossil of whale head, 5m years old, found in Mallorca quarry

which grow to 21 metres (just under 69 feet), are fairly common in and around September in the western Mediterranean, especially near the Cabo de la Nao cove, between Dénia and Jávea (northern Alicante province), which is mainland Spain’s most eastern point, since the area is directly on their migration path, south from the Ligurian Sea. The quarry in Santanyí corresponds with a Mediterranean-wide stratum known as the Terminal Carbonatic Complex, or “chalk strip”,

which formed during the so-called “Salt Crisis”, more than five million years ago. Natural barriers, including Spain’s “bridge to Africa”, through the Alborán Sea, prevented the Atlantic and Mediterranean from mixing, and cut off the salt supply from the former to the latter. That meant the Mediterranean almost became a giant freshwater lake, until the waves began to reclaim the land, restoring the salt balance between 2.6 to 5.3 million years

ago. It is thought that the giant whales became temporarily extinct during the Salt Crisis, but started to reappear there once normal sea conditions returned. The whale found in Santanyí is thought to be one of those which died out during the Salt Crisis, especially given its location in the limestone strip, which formed around the same time. But as yet, it is the first fossil of a great whale to be found there, and the first from so long ago, says the UIB team.

Mandarins ditched by drunk driver

A LORRY driver, six times over the alcohol limit, was caught by police after steering the huge vehicle, with its 18 tonnes of mandarins, into a ditch.

The 42-year-old Spaniard was well over the legal limit when breath-tested by officers, which carries compulsory punishments. The driver, who careered

off the RM F-25 highway, just outside San Pedro del Pinatar, was taken to a San Javier courthouse, where he faces three to six months in prison and a fine, or up to three months’ community service. He will also face a driving ban of up to four years. The driver of a tow truck, summoned to the scene, had his work cut out removing the vehicle from the ditch, but he succeeded, after four hours, in rescuing the Oliva-bound vehicle.

THE Spanish government has taken steps to guarantee residency and healthcare rights, for UK nationals in Spain and Gibraltar, after Brexit, as long as the UK reciprocates.

Having announced its nodeal contingency measures for UK nationals in January, the Spanish government has now passed a royal decree, to embed these into Spanish law. This is set to provide reassurance, and make things easier for Britons living in Spain, amidst ongoing Brexit uncertainty. The UK government has voted against leaving the EU without

Spain locks in protection for all the UK expatriates

a deal, but this is non-binding, so we still need to wait and see what happens, over the coming weeks. Spain’s foreign minister, Josep Borrell, declared their intention was “to ensure that no citizen is left unprotected … The British living in Spain will continue as before, and the Spaniards who live there will, as well”. Residency rights and benefits If the UK leaves the EU without a deal, Spain has offered to provide 400,000 new residency papers, allowing UK citizens the right to stay, and continue accessing existing benefits. Britons would then have until the end of 2020 to apply for a “foreigner identity card”, to secure the right to remain from 2021 onwards. While there would be conditions to qualify, the process for anyone who already has

permanent residency would “be nearly automatic”. The message for any as-yetunregistered Britons in Spain is to make yourself known to the authorities, and apply for residency now, before the Brexit date, to receive this protection. While Spain has agreed these benefits will also apply to UK nationals in Gibraltar, the decree specifies that Spain will have veto rights over future UK/EU negotiations, regarding the territory. Healthcare provision The Spanish no-deal measures also include a commitment to continue reimbursing healthcare costs for eligible UK nationals settled in the country, before Brexit, until at least 2020. While this is reassuring news, this guarantee depends on the UK government offering equal treatment for Spanish

nationals in the UK, whether it is through extending today’s “S1 form” arrangement, or a new bilateral agreement. Is anything certain? The only no-deal pledge, for which Spain has received a reciprocal guarantee from the UK, is voting rights. Both countries have signed an agreement that allows UK nationals the right to vote and stand in local elections in Spain, and take part in European Parliament elections. As for the other protections, they remain conditional on the UK reciprocating for Spaniards in the UK. “Although it is unilateral measure passed by Spain,” said the Spanish foreign minister, “we expect that it will be met with reciprocity by the British government.” Mr Borrell claimed his government was willing to

do everything they could to make them unnecessary, by avoiding a no-deal Brexit. “We hope this never has to be used,” he said. At the time of writing, we still do not know what date Brexit will be, or if the transition period will go ahead. With still so much uncertainty, it is a good idea to take personalised advice as soon as possible, to establish what you can do to secure your future in Spain. A financial adviser, with cross-border expertise, can review your tax and estate planning, pensions, savings and investments, to make sure they are set up in the best way for your life in Spain, whatever happens with Brexit. No more killing bulls at medieval festival, rules Supreme Court A RULING by Spain’s Supreme Court has, definitively, brought an end to the traditional way of celebrating the Toro de la Vega, a mediaeval bull festival held in the Tordesillas, in central Spain. It means that no longer will a bull be lanced to death by a spear-wielding crowd, after being chased to the banks of the River Duero. Tordesillas Council had argued that the legislation eliminated “the essence of the popular rite that gave rise to bullfighting”. And in the latest chapter of a long-running legal battle by various animal-rights’ groups to outlaw the tradition, the Supreme Court has rejected an appeal from Tordesillas Council. The Council had sought to amend a sentence, which also outlawed the Toro de la Vega and was passed by Castilla y León regional High Court. Last April, the latter tribunal upheld a decree passed by the regional government that outlawed the bull’s death as part of the fiestas. This law is also applicable to similar practices, should they be held in other towns in the region. Since 2016, the Toro de la

Vega has involved a normal bull-run through the town, during which the animal is not killed in public. Another Council argument stated that “40,000 fans” attended the event, “compared with 100 animal activists”. It also said the death of the animal did not detract from its dignity, but, rather, enhanced it. But the appeal claimed that there was no real justification to do away with the bull. Silvia Barquero, President of Spain’s animal-rights party PACMA, has spent years fighting for the prohibition of the torture and death of a bull in the Toro de la Vega festival. She has welcomed the definitive abolition of a practice, which, her group believes, “is not in accordance with the

sensitivities of today’s society”. Barquero said the ruling was the first victory in the fight to end similar festivals, related to bullfighting. “The Toro de la Vega has become just another bull-run; one that we reject, just like we do all the others,” she said, defiantly. After receiving news of the ruling, Tordesillas Mayor González Poncela announced that the Town Hall had requested its external legal services to examine what “possibilities present themselves now”. This report will be made available to the Council, which will be formed after the municipal elections on 26th May. But a disappointed González Poncela says he will not be running again as Mayor.

Drug customers given a sweet cannabis treat GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested 21 people for cultivating and distributing illegal drugs, through a network of Costa Blanca cannabis associations, including two British “ringleaders”. The unnamed Brits distributed marijuana and hashish through four Torrevieja groups, said to have had a combined membership of 6,000. The Guardia agents also raided seven addresses in the city, including two private homes, and found narcotics worth €216,000, including three marijuana plantations,

1.1kg of methamphetamine, 25kg of marijuana, 4.5kg of hashish, 38 cigarettes and 541gms of hashish oil. They also found the sweetest of treats for customers, featuring 11.6kg of cannabis derivatives, including cream chocolate spread, muffins, jelly beans, jams, lollipops, biscuits and honey. Some 21 people were arrested, with 17 men aged 2557, of different nationalities, Spanish, Senegalese, Chaldeans, Dutch, Swiss, Russian and British, along with four women, aged 28-48, from Spain, Canada and the UK. The authorities have refused bail for the British couple, said to be the ring-leaders of the organisation, who await charges of drug-trafficking and criminal organisation.

Who will get the 100 singing along and which two acts will secure their place in the grand final for £50,000?

MotherFatherSon

Wednesday 27th March, BBC2, 21.00 With no prospect of returning to the role he’d spent his life being groomed for, Caden (Billy Howle) has nothing to live for. He spirals downwards until his equally unhinged companion Orla (Niamh Algar) makes a potentially devastating suggestion. Kathryn (Helen McCrory) reconnects with the volatile Scott (Joseph Mawle), with whom she’d established an intense connection at the homeless shelter. Max (Richard Gere) weighs the political candidates as the general election looms - but has his judgement been impaired by his son’s illness? When Kathryn learns some of Max’s dark secrets, she too has a fateful decision to make.

White Gold

Wednesday 27th March, BBC2, 22.00

With Jo now co-running Cachet Windows with Vincent, the team immediately notice her hardline approach to business. After Fitzpatrick and Lavender sell and deliver a full set of windows to Mick Murphy, a travelling man in a caravan who doesn’t pay up, she insists on cutting their commission unless they can recover the windows or the money. Fitzpatrick quits in protest and convinces Walshy to give him his old job back, but Lavender decides to stay on at Cachet and to try to recover the commission for himself. Jo strikes a deal with Vincent: give her one month to prove her value and do things her way or leave if she fails. She uses her position of power to expose the truth about Lavender and Sam’s past through a ‘role play’ sales training exercise, leaving Vincent and Lavender furious at each other and at Jo for her devious techniques. The tension between Jo and Vincent reaches a climax when they sleep together, and Jo finally has Vincent where she wants him. She gives him 48 hours to decide if he will work for her - or risk Sam finding out about their affair. Meanwhile, Sam attends a trade conference and is subject to constant sexist jokes from one of the company’s top clients. She lands the contract, but whilst out celebrating she loses her cool in front of the client when the jokes cease to stop. In the aftermath of her outburst her boss Andrew tries to win her over, and proposes she leave Vincent to pursue a relationship with him. Sam refuses, and with Andrew’s pride damaged by her rejection, he comes up with a lie to fire her. Unable to find a solution after Jo gains the upper hand, Vincent goes to Ronnie who has a job for him. Vincent and the family are going on holiday to Malta...

Australia: Earth’s Magical Kingdom c h o i c e BBC2, 21.00

The second episode of Australia: Earth’s Magical Kingdom explores why marine species are drawn to Australia’s coasts and islands, where three oceans - the Southern Sea, the Pacific and The Indian Ocean - create the perfect environment for underwater voyagers of all types. In the clear waters of Pearson Island off South Australia, Australian sea lions are thriving. Once a rare sight, they are now protected from hunting. Meanwhile in the wide shallows of Spencer Gulf, June is the time for a midwinter gathering of spectacularly colourful giant cuttlefish that battle for mates. The cold Southern Ocean also brings humpback whales from Antarctica to give birth, and triggers the breathtaking spectacle of thousands of Australian spider crabs, the largest crustaceans in the world, congregating under the piers of Port Philip Bay to moult. It’s a grisly time, as the first to reveal their soft shells can be cannibalised by their neighbours. Still, there’s some safety in numbers, as bigger predators - smooth stingrays - sweep over the congregation sucking them from the seabed.

What Would Your Kid Do? ITV1, 19.00

www.canarianweekly.com 22nd March 2019 - 28th March 2019

Jason Manford returns with a new series of What Would Your Kid Do? The show which asks how well we really know our kids, by challenging parents to guess what their children will do in a variety of entertaining situations. Each show sees children filmed in a school specially rigged with hidden cameras. The kids think they’re taking part in a variety of classroom activities and games, unaware that we’re actually testing everything from empathy and lateral thinking to curiosity and rule breaking. Back in the studio, Jason challenges the parents to predict what their child will do in each situation: providing a fascinating, surprising and hilarious insight into the developing minds of 5, 6 and 7 year-olds. The family with the most correct predictions goes through to the final. But on this show, it’s not the adults choosing the prizes… it’s the kids.

22:30................. ITV News London

Recently widowed Frank Hardcastle (Larry Lamb) runs Daffodil Dunes Holiday Park in the picturesque village of Glan Mor, on the North Wales coast. It’s the heartbeat of this close-knit community. Londoner Frank has lived here for 50 years, since he met the love of his life Bronwen while on holiday with the lads. It’s a year since she died, and since then Frank has relied on his close friends Stip (Gary Robson), Stip’s wife Kitty (Melanie Walters) and the rest of his little gang to get him through the bad times. When the village organises a surprise 71st birthday party for Frank, he is shocked when his daughter Carys (Caroline Sheen) shows up with her son Dylan (William Romain), a moody teenager. Carys needs a new start and suggests that she becomes the park’s manager - she thinks the whole place needs bringing into the 21st century. Carys’s enthusiasm and hare-brained schemes rub some of the park’s residents up the wrong way, but Carys has got other things to worry about, with her exfiancee Danny (Craig Russell) back in town running the local pub. With him is feisty Tanya (Lu Corfield) and her daughter, Chloe (Seren Medi Davies). Village gossip is rife - so surely Tanya knows that Carys jilted Danny at the altar all those years back? Frank has some secret meetings with a glamorous estate agent called Iona (Hayley Mills), who wants him to think about selling the park. As Carys organises a ‘Vintage Jamboree’ at Daffodil Dunes to drum up interest and bring in more tourists, some park regulars begin to worry that ‘the wrong sort’ of visitor is going to spoil the quiet, relaxed ambience of the place. Things go wrong at the Jamboree when young Chloe and Dylan end up getting drunk, much to the horror of Tanya, who promptly blames Carys for not controlling her son. As the kids are sent to bed to sleep off the hangover, Tanya asks Danny why he hasn’t told Tanya “the truth” about him and Carys. What does she mean?

“This programme looks into the harrowing case of the murder of two nine year old girls through the eyes of the family and police officers involved in the case. The film shows how justice finally caught up with killer Russell Bishop, 32 years after the murders in what is a real testament to everyone involved never giving up.” Sir Trevor McDonald “Some people won’t believe the truth until it hits them right in the face. This is the truth and the truth is he murdered two little girls, he tried to murder another little girl. He is now wallowing in prison where he should be.” Barrie Fellows (victim Nicola Fellows’ father) Told through first hand testimonies from the one of the families and officers and with access to exclusive police footage, presented by Sir Trevor McDonald; ‘Babes In The Wood’ follows the chronology of events. Starting in 1986 with nine year old girls, Karen Hadaway and Nicola Fellows being reported missing, through to the discovery of their bodies in Wild Park, the arrest and failed first prosecution of Russell Bishop, his acquittal and ‘The March For Justice’ with the families demanding that Sussex Police reopen the case. Hashish king cannot stand police pressure

ONE of the largest suspected drugtraffickers in the Campo de Gibraltar, in the south of Spain, is disappearing “for a while”, saying the pressure from police is making his life unbearable. Abdellah El Haj, dubbed the “Messi of Hashish”, has been on remand, accused

of drug-trafficking, moneylaundering and membership of an organised gang, since November 2017. He is on bail for €80,000, and is obliged to report to court daily. But he has not appeared for several days, and has sent a letter to the Europa Sur newspaper, complaining about the close attention he has been receiving from police. He wrote: “I communicate my decision to disappear for a while, because I am truly afraid for my integrity, and

that of my family. All this is due to the enormous police pressure, to which I am being subjected, and which, in recent times, has become unbearable, preventing me from leading a normal life.” He added that his family were harassed. Also, his emotional stability has seriously deteriorated, and that needs medical help. Police are now searching for Abdellah, who will be brought before the court, once apprehended.

High-heeled doctor died after falling down stairs

Tragedy Doctor Susan Allanby and her GP husband, Charles

A BRITISH doctor, wearing extremely high heels, died after falling down a flight of stairs, following a holiday night out in Central Spain.

Susan Allanby, a 66-year-old general practitioner, was found in a pool of blood by her husband, Dr Charles Allanby, 63, after he heard a “thump” at their renovated holiday home in Algora. An inquest in Cardiff, where the couple are from, heard that a post-mortem revealed the cause of death was a traumatic head and neck injury. The coroner recorded a conclusion of death by accident, attributed to alcohol, after toxicology

reports found 317mg per decilitre of alcohol in Dr Allanby’s blood. The legal driving limit is 80. The inquest heard that the couple, both GPs at Clifton Surgery in Roath, who planned to move to Spain permanently, had been on a night out with friends in January 2018. The deceased mother-of-four is said to have been “dancing and very animated” during the evening, before leaving with her husband at around 1am. Her husband told the inquest he had never seen her wear such high heels before. And, a few minutes after they had returned home, he heard a noise and found his wife lying in a pool of blood, after suffering fatal injuries from a fall down six stairs.

Police-car ITVs no longer legal NATIONAL Police arrested a Senegalese man for attempting to smuggle immigrants into Spain, after a rubber dinghy, with 48 sub-Saharans on board, was spotted by a cargo ship. The dinghy was intercepted in the Alboran Sea, and

officers identified a 25-yearold as the boat’s skipper, after interviewing some of his passengers. They told officers that the skipper issued warnings, during the 10-hour crossing from Morocco, that if they were rescued, they had to tell the police they had all taken turns at manning the tiller, and keeping an eye on the compass. Police also reported that

each immigrant had paid around €2,500 to make the crossing on the rubber boat, which was seven metres long. Officers charged the detainee with a crime against the rights of foreign citizens. So far this year, Almeria’s National Police have arrested eight individuals on the same charges, and have dealt with 32 boats, assisting more than 1,300 people.

TWO Local Police cars in Vallbona were spotted being driven around with expired ITVs, which are the Spanish equivalent of British MOTs.

Half the fleet of the Pobla de Vallbona Local Police were circulating, displaying outof-date Technical Vehicle Inspections (ITV), it was claimed. A photograph of one

vehicle was published in the Levante-EMV newspaper, which said the vehicles should have been re-tested last December. But the Vallbona Mayor Josep Vicent García, disputed the newspaper report, saying: “I’m very surprised at what you say, which is false… well, I do not know if it was circulating or standing still!” The penalty for driving a vehicle without a current ITV is €200, issued by the Local Police!

THE Brexit uncertainty has created an additional problem for Spaniards living in the UK, because the country’s only two Consulates are overwhelmed with work, and appointments are nearly impossible to obtain.

Registering as a permanent resident, changing driving licences and other bureaucracy, means that getting an appointment for registering a birth or marriage, replacing a passport and registering to vote in the Spanish general elections is difficult, often given at the last minute and really strict in terms of time. Spaniards in Britain are complaining about the volume of bureaucracy they cannot do online or by post, which means they have to visit the Consulate during working hours, and, possibly, taking annual leave to do so. And it also costs them a fortune, since the only Consular offices are in London and Edinburgh, which leaves excessively-long travelling distances for many. A pressure group in the northwest, the Marea Granate Manchester, is calling for the Consulate in Manchester, which shut down in 2011, to reopen. Registering to vote in their home general elections is always a headache, they complain, since they have to do so in person at the Consulate. Often, they fail to receive their ballot papers in time, and have no guarantee that their postal vote will arrive. This is similar to the situation denounced by Brits living in

www.canarianweekly.com

Spanish in UK facing a farce at Consulates

22nd March 2019 - 28th March 2019

Spain, many of whom did not receive their ballot in time to vote in the Brexit referendum, or in previous UK general elections, where they are still eligible. Those who have lived outside the UK for 15 years or more, are barred from voting in local or general elections, or in any referendum, which would include a People’s Vote or a second referendum on Brexit. It’s a situation the Conservative Government pledged to resolve in time for the 2015 UK general elections, but failed to do so. Annoyed Spaniards in Britain say that while their

community, around 200,000, has never ceased to grow, Consular staff numbers remain the same. And with the extra paperwork they have to deal with before Brexit, Consular employees are needed more than ever. With the UK Parliament voting against a No-Deal Brexit, and also against Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal, but supporting a threemonth extension to Article 50, Spaniards living in the UK are now in a dilemma about what to do about the European Parliamentary elections on 26th May. Many had assumed they would be unable to vote

for British MEPs, since the UK would be out of the Union by then, and registered to vote for Spanish MEPs instead. But if Britain expects to be granted its three-month extension, which must be approved by the entire, remaining EU-27, it will have to field candidates for the European elections. Europe’s Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, and other leaders, including Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker, have said they would consider an extension to Article 50. But they will do so, only if the British Government has a clear idea of what it hopes to achieve in that time. They are against prolonging Brexit uncertainty even further, causing huge losses for businesses on either side of the Channel, as well as stress for residents, and are not willing to renegotiate Theresa May’s existing proposal. The EU leaders have said that if one particular point on which they could agree to was stopping the deal from being voted through, it would be worth

providing an extension, but only until 20th May, in light of the elections. But it does not seem possible, from the EU’s point of view, for any deal proposal to get through British Parliament, since all parties are divided on whether Brexit should happen at all. Pro-Brexit MPs want to cut all ties with the EU immediately, deal or no deal, while others want Brexit to be cancelled altogether. And although Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has finally agreed to back a possible second referendum, this idea has also been rejected in Parliament, and it isn’t popular in the EU, either. The MPs say that if the result were the same or similar, it would solve nothing, simply leading to more months of member States being in limbo. A “People’s Vote” march is set to take place tomorrow (Saturday), calling for the public to have a final say on any Brexit deal, including the option to remain in the EU on the ballot paper.

Brits still involved heavily in Spanish property sales

BRITISH property buyers in Spain have defied pre-Brexit referendum records, despite the doom and gloom, reveal the latest figures.

The buyers, ignoring the UK’s imminent EU departure, have chalked up a 12% increase in the 2018 sale of homes, rising to 10,178, which tops the 2016 record of 10,156. While UK buyers declined significantly in the two quarters after the June 2016 referendum, and by 28% in

the last quarter of that year, they started a recovery, increasing by double-digits last year. It means the UK’s share of the foreign market has been steadily increasing, from a low of 14% in the first quarter of 2017, to 17% at the end of 2018. And though this is not yet back to the levels prior to the referendum, because of other nationalities flooding the market, it is expected to rise again this year. Property expert Mark Stucklin, of Spanish Property Insight, said the weakness of the Pound against the Euro

was the leading cause of a drop in demand. “Once the Pound stabilised at a lower level, British demand also stabilised and then began to grow again,” he said. He added that buyers at the bottom end of the market simply lowered their budgets, rather than abandoning their

intention to buy altogether. “And at the high end of the market, I believe there has been little change in budgets,” he said. “People with money tend to be well diversified.” Other agents said the trend was likely to continue after Spain vowed this month to protect the rights of Brits

living in the country. Conor Wilde, head of agency Found Valencia, said: “Over the past four months, we have been showing more property to British buyers, consistently. “These buyers will revisit Spain once Brexit has settled. And since the news last week that the Spanish Government will safeguard the rights of British people living in Spain, we have seen a dramatic increase in enquiries from the UK.” But he warned: “We will not see a large-scale sales change until this Brexit fiasco is over.”

Computer-hacking gang’s €4m spread around banks

33 CW

Anti-Brexit group to join London protest AROUND 100 British expats have confirmed that they will fly to London to take part in a huge Brexit protest tomorrow (Saturday).

THE National Police have arrested 16 people, alleged to belong to a computerhacking group, which had made nearly €4m in a plot, embracing Tarragona, Malaga, Sevilla, Cuenca and Cadiz.

The suspects were held, in connection with organised crime, fraud, and moneylaundering. And they are believed to have circulated the money around 127 bank accounts.

The group are accused of hacking emails from financial institutions, before transferring funds to 39 fictional companies. Police began their investigation, following a complaint by a Luxembourg company, which said it had lost a total of €650,000. Further inquiries seemed to have revealed that two companies, one in Venezuela and the other in the US, had also been scammed. The plot was believed to have involved the group, carrying out 36 scams in companies based in Norway, the UK, Austria, Bermuda, Germany and India.

They are members of antiBrexit group Bremain in Spain, whose aim is “campaigning for the UK to remain in the EU”. Tomorrow’s “Put It To The People” event is expected to be the largest protest march in British history. It is organised by the People’s Vote campaign, whose spokesperson said: “Our demand is simple: any Brexit must be put to the people so that we can have the final say.” Bremain in Spain believe that Brexit “was sold as a lie, a fantasy, and a pipe-dream.” John Moffett, the group’s vice-chairman, who will be making the journey, describes the protest as one of the most important marches ever. “We must demonstrate our commitment to a People’s Vote,” he added. Sue Wilson, the group’s chair, said: “We’ve supported

the campaign for another referendum from the start, and we’ve actively campaigned to give the British public another say in this debate.” The march takes place just six days before the UK is set to leave the EU, on 29th March.

Last October, another London march, organised by the People’s Vote campaign, attracted 700,000 protesters. They were calling for a second referendum, in what was the largest demonstration since the Iraq War.

Google fined €1.49bn for ‘illegal practices’

THE European Commission hit Google with a staggering €1.49bn (£1.2bn) fine on Wednesday, for “illegal practices in search advertising brokering”.

European Union regulators said Google had abused its dominant role in online advertising, and The EU Commission said Google had imposed restrictive clauses in contracts with third-party websites, which prevented its rivals from placing their search adverts on these websites. Margrethe Vestager, Com-

missioner for Competition, said: “Today, the Commission has fined Google €1.49bn for illegal misuse of its dominant position, in the market for the brokering of online search adverts. “Google has cemented its dominance in online-search adverts, and shielded itself from competitive pressure by imposing anti-competitive, contractual restrictions on third-party websites. “This is illegal under EU antitrust rules. The misconduct lasted over 10 years, and denied other companies the possibility to compete on the merits and to innovate, and consumers the benefits of competition.” Ms Vestager announced the

fine at a news conference in Brussels, after a long-running probe of Google’s AdSense advertising business case. It is the third time the commission has imposed on Google an anti-trust penalty, following multi-billion-dollar fines resulting from separate probes into two other parts of the Silicon Valley giant’s business. Last year, Ms Vestager hit the company with a record €4.34bn (£3.7bn) penalty, following an investigation into its Android operating system. And in 2017, she slapped a €2.42bn (£2bn) fine on Google over a case involving its online shopping search results.

Corrosive-spraying burglar jailed for nearly nine years

A BURGLAR, who sprayed a man’s face with a corrosive liquid before fleeing to Spain, was jailed for eight years and nine months in the UK.

David Hudson attacked the 20-year-old victim, after forcing his way into an Essex address at Leigh-on-Sea in October, 2017. He sprayed the man with liquid from a bottle he was carrying before making off. The victim needed hospital treatment but, despite having blurry vision for three days, did not

suffer permanent damage. Three days earlier, Hudson had confronted the youngster outside his home and assaulted him. Hudson. who left the country rapidly, resurfaced in August 2018, at the British Consulate in Barcelona. He told officials he was homeless and wanted to travel back to the UK. But the 52-year-old, of nofixed-address, was arrested at Stansted Airport when he arrived back in England. Hudson was jailed at Basildon Crown Court after being found guilty of aggravated burglary and throwing a corrosive liquid with intent, as well as actual bodily harm.

Firework horror for a celebration group

SEVEN people were injured after a firework crashed into onlookers at a Las Fallas celebration in Valencia, last Saturday afternoon.

A 23-year-old was reported to have suffered a “very big” wound to his neck after the firecracker exploded close to the public, standing behind a security barrier. National and Local Police and ambulances were quickly on the scene to treat the injured, and five people, including the seriously-injured person, were rushed to Valencia’s La Fe Hospital. A retired Guardia Civil

officer, was one of two others who also received hospital treatment, at the Nisa 9 de Octubre Hospital. National Police officers have collected witness statements from the public, as well as from representatives of the pyrotechnics company. Rafa Ferrando, President of the Las Fallas committee, was “very affected” by the incident and expressed concern for the injured. Las Fallas are traditional celebrations, held in commemoration of Saint Joseph in Valencia. Huge paper mache models are burned during the celebrations, often accompanied by spectacular fireworks.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Sky’s the limit for stars by John Zammit

THE second heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, sponsored by The Duke Shops in Costa Adeje, continued where the first heat finished... on a high!

It was staged at The Sky Bar, Puerto Colon, which is a regular TLK venue, and we had a full complement of singers again. Like last week’s heat, there was a variety of songs from entrants, with not an Adele or Ed Sheeran song in sight. Kerry Railton, Tenerife Loves Karaoke host for the night, got proceedings underway with Tracey’s energetic version of Tina Turner’s Proud Mary, which certainly got the crown going. Denver followed that with Westlife’s You Raise Me Up, and also earned rapturous applause. And then came our first 13-year-old of the night. A nervous Alysha, who took to the stage shaking, performed an excellent version of Can I Have This Dance? Next up was Joey, and, for the second heat running, Boyzone’s version

of the Bee Gees’ Words was sung, again receiving huge applause. Georgina followed Joey, belting out Beyonce’s Listen, to bring the house down. Last to perform before the break was Michelle, who made sure the crowd were left wanted more, with her version of I Will Always Love You, by Whitney Houston. What a performance! After a short break, during which Kerry, along with 2018 Tenerife Entertainments

Awards compere Didi, entertained the crowd with a few songs, Millie got us back underway. She sang Scars To Your Beautiful, by Alessia Cara, which had them back to where they were before the interval. Then it was the turn of Steve, who sang a song which was alien to many of us, Leroy Van Dyke’s The Auctioneer, which we all loved. Steve sang about selling a pig, and he even had the dance

moves to match. Former TLK finalist Jane was next, with a superb version of Back to Black, followed by Georgia’s I’m Not The Only One, by Sam Smith. The performances really were of a high standard, which continued with our last two contestants, Marie singing Where The Boys Are, then Sophie’s karaoke favourite, Black Velvet. After a short break, the judges confirmed that Georgina, Tracey, Michelle and Marie

were all through to the singoff, which began with Marie singing Unchained Melody. Michelle performed Halleluiah, Georgina offered Mercy, and, finally, came Tracey with Losing You. However, two people had to be chosen to go through to the semi-finals, and Georgina and Michelle won the vote. Congratulation to both girls, who each received their winning heat trophies. We would like to thank everyone who entered the heat at the “The Sky Bar”, whose owners and staff helped make it another memorable heat. The next Tenerife Loves Karaoke is on Saturday, 23rd May, at Our Place, Costa del Silencio. If you would like to enter this heat, to be in with a chance of winning 1,000 euros and performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, call 822 141 517, or register at the venue. And don’t forget, you have to sing it to win it!

K9 Animal News

This is Joseph! COME and meet our beautiful boy, Joseph. He has been at K9 for about a year now. His ex-owners fell on hard times, and had no choice but to surrender him to us. He is a large dog, but is a gentle giant. Joseph is brindle in colour, and is four years old. Joseph currently shares with another male dog at the kennels, and is often overlooked by a lot of people who come to walk the dogs, or look for a dog to adopt. People may be put off by his size. This is a shame as he is a very sweet, loving, friendly boy, who is just looking for his second chance in a loving home. He has also shared a kennel with a female dog who has since been adopted by one of the volunteers, so it was decided to try him with a male dog. They get on really well. They share the big kennel across the road from the main building, which is another reason why he gets overlooked. Joseph is wonderful to walk. He likes to stroll through the trails around K9 with his

playmate Pumpkin, and can be walked on or off lead. He does not pull on the lead, and does like to stop for the occasional treat and drink of water. Fiona, from K9, continues the story: “He was one of the first dogs I walked at K9, and I do remember his nervousness and uncertainty of me. It took a little while, but he now enjoys his walks with me! “He does need time to get to know you, because he can be nervous of new people and new smells. As he gets to

know you, he starts to show some more affection, and you may even begin to get a kiss or two, right on the face! “He is a patient, obedient dog who always waits his turn to be fed, or when treats are being handed out. Ideally, he would need a garden to enjoy and relax in, because he is a big dog. “He just needs someone to show him that they care and love him, and to know that he is safe. The shelter can be an intense experience for most dogs, and sometimes they can be afraid. Please help us to find Joseph a loving home.” Meet our dogs! We have many other dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 9.30am-1.30pm?

Cancer Bus

Cancer-bus fundraiser raises a welcome sum!

Left to right: Sheena, Webby, Mo, Pamela

A CANCER-BUS fundraising day was held, in February, at the Montecristo Bar in Calleo Salvaje, raising a whopping €2,592 for the charity.

Massive thanks must go to Pamela Squires, who initiated the proceedings with the support of David and Jill, and the bar staff at the Montecristo Bar in Calleo Salvaje, together with the team of helpers as follows: Mo - fundraiser and buffet Webby - MC for the day Sue - fundraising Sheena - fundraising John and Laurie - quiz and “Play Your Cards Right”. Pamela’s husband Ray was diagnosed, recently, with cancer of the oesophagus. He had to use the bus, daily, for a 10-week period, to attend chemotherapy sessions at the Candelaria Hospital, in the North. Thankfully, Ray has finished his

treatment, and, after major surgery this month, is now on the mend and recovering well. We all appreciate the importance of this bus, and the raising of funds to continue this invaluable support. Very sadly, cancer has touched us all, in one way or another! The bus was donated by Mrs Carol Chappell in 2015, and at least €36,000 each year is needed for its maintenance, and to keep it running. Special thanks also go to the hospital staff who cared for Ray, both during his treatment, and post surgery. A huge thank-you to all who participated on the charity day, especially local individuals and businesses, who donated many of the raffle and auction items. Many thanks, also, to all those who made anonymous donations you know who you are! A fantastic result for a fabulous, fun-filled day!

This fruit is top banana! THEY’RE often the fruit of choice for athletes looking to boost their electrolyte levels and get a quick energy boost, but bananas are a whole lot more than just a sweet treat, or a pleasant addition to a morning smoothie.

Rich in vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds, bananas can also serve as a natural remedy for treating depression, promoting regularity, boosting brain power and calming the nerves, among other important functions within the body. A closer look at the scientific literature on bananas reveals a host of little-known benefits associated with eating the fruit. Everything, from regulating blood pressure and healing a damaged gut, to relieving the symptoms of arthritis and even battling drug addiction, have been attributed to this simple fruit, easily labelling it as one of the most amazing, widely available and inexpensive super-fruits known to man.

Eating bananas can help relieve depression and improve one’s mood. They contain tryptophan, the same compound found in turkey meat, which promotes a calm, relaxed mood. They are also said to aid in relieving the symptoms of depression. Combined with the benefits of B vitamins, the conversion of tryptophan into serotonin, the so-called “happy hormone”, helps improve mood, and overall feelings of well-being. Keeping our B vitamin intake up could ward off depression as we age. When food sources of B vitamins are combined with the

added boost of supplements, the positive effects on depression are more pronounced. Like many other whole fruits and vegetables, bananas are an excellent source of soluble fibre. Fibre is necessary for maintaining regularity. Remembering to incorporate bananas into our regular diet can help avoid constipation and other intestine and bowel-related conditions. Bananas help restore normal bowel function, especially if you have diarrhoea. This fruit also has lots of fibre to aid digestion. Potassium is essential for bloodpressure control and healthy

22nd March 2019 - 28th March 2019 kidney function. As a good dietary source of potassium, bananas may be especially beneficial for maintaining healthy kidneys. One 13-year study in women determined that those who ate bananas 2-3 times per week were 33% less likely to develop kidney disease. Other studies note that those who eat bananas 4-6 times a week are almost 50% less likely to develop kidney disease, than those who don’t eat this fruit. In addition to B vitamins, bananas also contain high levels of potassium, an electrolyte mineral used by the heart, kidneys and other body organs for normal function. Brain neurons rely on high levels of potassium, a lack of which can lead to “brain fog”, and other cognitive problems. A 2013 study researched potassium supplementation and levels of free radicals in the brain. After 20 days of supplementation with potassium, the levels of harmful free radicals decreased significantly, reducing the amount of oxidative damage

that occurred in the test subjects. Because oxidative damage leads to decreased brain function, potassium

counteracts this effect and prevents brain damage. B vitamins in bananas help calm the nervous system.

Of the eight known B vitamins, bananas are an excellent source of five of them: thiamin (B1), riboflavin

(B2), niacin (B3), pyridoxine (B6) and folate (B9). The basic food source of the nervous system, these B vitamins aid the body in digesting and using other nutrients, as well as supporting a healthy heart, muscles and nerves. B vitamins help produce and maintain new cells, and are an essential part of many biochemical reactions in your body. Bananas contain useful amounts of these B vitamins. Not only are bananas incredibly healthy, they’re also one of the most convenient snack foods around. They make a great addition to yogurt, cereal and smoothies, and can even be used instead of sugar, in your baking and cooking. Furthermore, bananas rarely contain any pesticides or pollutants, because of their thick, protective peel. Bananas are incredibly easy to eat and transport. They are usually well-tolerated and easily digested, and they simply have to be peeled and eaten. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Paddy’s Day Celebrations

St. Patrick’s Day went off with great craic, as it usually does. The sea of green was everywhere in Tenerife last Sunday, and Oasis Fm were there to join in the celebrations.

The first of the live outside broadcasts started at the Irish Oak in San Eugenio, where Jenny T and Danny were met with entertainment from Adam See and Paul Fitzpatrick. Mid afternoon, with the Guinness flowing, and Murphys Bar in Las Americas was next with Gordon Slayney and Ireland’s top duo, Glen Baker and Dermot McQuillan. Then on to O’Neill’s in Las Americas for the early evening crowds with DJ Dylan and Ben Simington, and the winner of The Voice Ireland, Brendan McCahey. DJ Tezza and the Elk were next, at Paddy O’Kellys in Las Americas, with Simon Roberts and Billy McCraken, and then finishing the night off in Magic bar, with the M3 band and Rory Quinn. MANY things are checked at the ITV station during an annual inspection, and some of these are outside the car, such as mirrors.

So, if you have a broken or cracked mirror, does this affect whether your car passes its ITV? The Applus group has issued some guidelines, to assist clients to be sure they will not experience problems. The use of mirrors, according to the Applus Group, is one of the most common things motorists have doubts about. Before we continue, we need to clarify their obligations when driving on the roads.

By Val Sainsbury IT seems that napping may do more than just reboot our energy level and improve our mood. New research found that people who took advantage of a midday snooze were more likely to have a noticeable drop in blood pressure, compared with those who didn’t.

Midday sleep appears to lower blood pressure levels at the same magnitude as other lifestyle changes. For example, salt and alcohol reduction can bring bloodpressure levels. Overall, taking a nap during the day was associated with a drop in blood pressure on a par with what would be expected from other, known, blood-pressure-lowering interventions. These findings are important, because even a small drop in blood pressure can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack, by up to 10%. Napping can be easily adopted, and, typically, doesn’t cost anything.

Lifestyle

ITV inspections: some items clarified

These obligations differ for various vehicle categories, and bikes, cars, vans and lorries all can have differing obligations. For a car registered as a Turismo, for instance, it is obligatory for it to have an external, left-hand side-mirror and an internal windscreenmounted mirror as well. This rule also applies to vehicles used to transport people. In some vans, a right-hand, external mirror is also obligatory. In large vehicles, such as lorries, trailers and vans, it is obligatory to have an exterior mirror with a large viewing angle, as well as an internal mirror. Yet, often, these mirrors are not useful, because of the nature of the vans/lorries, etc. Visibility via these is blocked by the panelled doors and sides.

Broken mirrors We often see broken mirrors on the ground in streets, where cars are parked on both sides and there is little room for passing. But careless drivers knock the mirrors, breaking them, and then drive off. For the owner, this can be expensive, because regulations say that a broken mirror at an ITV test is considered serious (grave). You must ensure that mirrors are fitted correctly, at the regulatory height, because they are considered to be an extension of the driver’s vision, to keep driving safely. If manufacturers’ guidelines are not obeyed, the vehicle is likely to fail its ITV. But things regarding mirrors, which are considered “minor defects” at ITV, are broken ones, those

that are not obligatory, badlyfitted ones, or loose mirrors. Therefore, it is in your interest to replace the mirror before going for an ITV. Light bulbs In September 2018, the European Union passed a law banning halogen bulbs, and, as Spain is a member country, this change affects your home and your car. LED lights can be an alternative and new cars are, of course, fitted with this type of lighting. But, in time ,your car will not pass an ITV if it has halogen bulbs, but this won’t happen overnight. There will be a gradual change, and there will be no penalties if your vehicle still has these types of bulbs. However, you can choose to change your lighting to LED lights to go through an

ITV inspection. But, for this to happen, your ITV station must approve the change, in line with European Regulations. Therefore, you would have to obtain a certificate from the manufacturer, proving they agree with such modification. But, I hear you asking: “Why should we change our bulbs?” Well, we live in a society, very much aware of the impact of many things on the environment, and it has been proven that halogen bulbs use 65 times more power than an equivalent LED bulb, which is food for thought. However, if your motor is considered a classic or a vintage car, then it is not possible to change them for a alternative bulb, and it is legal to continue using halogen bulbs.

track blood pressure at regular intervals during routine daily living, rather than just one time in the clinic. At study recruitment, participants also underwent an echocardiogram, an ultrasound of the heart that shows its structure and function. In their analyses, researchers adjusted for factors known to influence bloodpressure levels, including age, gender, lifestyle and medications. There were no differences in terms of the number of anti-hypertensive medications taken between the two groups, and pulse wave velocity tests and echocardiograms were also similar. When looking at both blood-

pressure numbers, people who slept during the day had more favourable readings. There also appeared to be a direct linear relationship between time asleep and blood pressure. It isn’t recommended that people sleep for hours on end during the day, but, on the other hand, they shouldn’t feel guilty if they can take a short nap, given the potential health benefits. Even though both groups were receiving the same number of medications, and blood pressure was well controlled, there was still a significant decrease in blood pressure among those who slept at midday. Researchers said the findings are further bolstered because patients had similar, dipping, blood-pressure rates at night (natural drops during nighttime sleep), meaning that any reductions in ambulatory blood pressure were separate from this phenomenon, and give greater confidence that reductions in ambulatory blood pressure could be due to daytime napping. Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. Many don’t know they have it because there are often no signs or symptoms; over time, high blood pressure increases the risk of both heart attacks and strokes.

A nap in the day takes all the pressure away!

This is the first study to assess midday sleep’s affect on blood-pressure levels among people whose blood pressure is reasonably controlled. The research team previously found midday naps to be associated with reduced blood-pressure levels, and fewer anti-hypertensive medications being prescribed among people with very high blood-pressure readings. The higher the blood-pressure levels, the more pronounced any effort to lower it will appear. By including people with relatively-wellcontrolled blood pressure, any significant differences in blood-pressure readings are likely due to napping. The study included 212

people. They were 62 years old on average, and just over half were female. About a quarter of participants were smokers, and/or had Type 2 diabetes. The groups were similar in terms of risk factors for heart disease, except there were more smokers in the napping group. Researchers assessed and recorded blood pressure for 24 hours consecutively, midday sleep time (the average duration was 49 minutes), lifestyle habits (for example, alcohol, coffee and salt consumption, physical activity levels), and pulse wave velocity, a measure of stiffness in the arteries. Participants wore an ambulatory blood-pressure monitor to measure and

CD Tenerife TENERIFE didn’t really deserve this point, as Alcorcón failed to win for the third consecutive game, yet they played with more faith than their opponents.

The home side, led by a brilliant Jaime Gavilán, one of six players to retain his place after mass changes by the coach, went ahead before half-an-hour had gone, thanks to their fifth penalty this season, converted by defender Esteban Burgos. But in the final 15 minutes, Tenerife, innocuous for most of the match, equalised through Nano Mesa. It was a good point for them and a bitter pill for the home side to swallow, as they slipped away from the play-off places. Following their defeat against Majadahonda last Sunday, five new Alcorcón players were drafted in, but Jaime Gavilán took the bull by the horns from the off. He stormed down the lefthand side of the pitch, and put over a lovely cross, which was met by Juan Muñoz in front of goal. And had it not been for a great save by the outstretched hand of keeper Dani Hernández, Tenerife would have found themselves behind within the first 30 seconds. The visitors responded, but with two timid approaches: a distant shot from Racic and a header from Malbasic, which didn’t really trouble keeper Lizoain. After 27 minutes Gavilán was off again, this time shooting from 20 yards and wrongfooting Tenerife defender Alberto, who slipped and handled the ball inside the area. Unfortunate, but, as they say, rules is rules, and the referee had no option but

to award the home team a penalty. Burgos, now the regular penalty-taker for Alcorcón, made it look easy, sending Dani the wrong way to put the home team ahead after 30 minutes. By now, Valencian midfielder Gavilán was running the show for the home side and was put through again, this time crossing another great ball to Sangalli, who forced

Dani into another excellent save. In fact, if it were not for the Tenerife keeper, it could quite easily have been 3-0 at half-time. Although nothing changed in the second half, the Alcorcón No.22 was established as their key player, leading the home team again and again, as they attacked their opponents. Alcorcón remained strong

and Tenerife coach Oltra’s men barely disturbed Lizoain’s area. The visitors were flat and lacking ideas, but they were still in the game, thanks to Dani. The keeper saved a good shot from Borja Galán, before making another magnificent stop from a Juan Muñoz effort. But although they continued to dominate, Alcorcón failed to close off the game with an elusive second goal. With 15 minutes left, they tried to shut up shop by bringing on the fresh legs of Eddy Silvestre, who replaced man-of-the-match Gavilan, who received a standing ovation as he left the Santo Domingo pitch. Yet, somehow, Tenerife reacted and found a breakthrough. After a long looping cross, Jorge Saenz headed the ball across the area in to the danger zone, where Nano, unmarked in

front of goal, nodded it into an empty net with ease, for only his second goal this season. The Tenerife striker has been unfortunate this season in front of goal, and his first strike since September, together with his celebration, showed just how much it meant. The visitors, completely against the run of play, now found themselves level after 77 minutes. Alcorcón seemed baffled by the equaliser and went for the game with more heart than head, enabling Tenerife to enjoy their best period with a hard shot from Naranjo. Malbasic then ventured alone on a run of almost 50 metres, straight through their defence. At the final whistle, Tenerife must have been the happier team, nicking a point from a side whose playoff aspirations are slipping away. But Tenerife remain firmly in 16th position in the table, but still just six points above the relegation zone. Their next match (tonight, Friday) sees the visit to the Heliodoro of league leaders Osasuna, who have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 matches, and whose last defeat came against a certain other Canarianbased team, who play in yellow! Let’s hope Tenerife can repeat that result, because this match could go a long way to deciding their league future. But they know they will have to perform much, much better.

Gazza set to play with the Legends of Spurs

TOTTENHAM Hotspurs are pinning their hopes on Paul Gascoigne being involved in the Legends game at their new stadium, later this month.

Gazza, who achieved iconic status at White Hart Lane during his three seasons there as a player, helped them to their last FA Cup triumph, in 1991. The former England midfielder

tweeted this week that he would be keen to play a part in the glamour fixture. He wrote on Wednesday: “If there’s a game at Spurs, im up 4 it”. (sic)

And it has emerged that Tottenham are also interested in a reunion, as part of their two test events for the new 62,000-seater stadium. The first event sees their Under-18 side take on Southampton on Sunday, before a team of legends play Inter Forever next Saturday (30th March). A spokesman told the Evening Standard: “Gary Mabbutt, who is a close, personal friend of Paul, has been discussing his participation in this match

with him for some time, and we all hope it will be possible for him to play.” Gazza’s inclusion is likely to depend on his health. He has endured a well-documented struggle with alcoholism. And in January, at Teesside Crown Court, he pleaded not guilty to a sexual-assault charge. Gascoigne would join the likes of Jurgen Klinsmann, Robbie Keane, Rafael van der Vaart, Darren Anderton and Dimitar Berbatov as the event’s star attractions.

Former players Allan Nielsen, Stephen Carr, David Howells, Erik Thorstvedt, Neil Sullivan, Teemu Tainio, Mark Falco, Pascal Chimbonda, Micky Hazard, Chris Perry, Paul Stalteri and Nayim are all involved. The inclusion of Edgar Davids, Teddy Sheringham, Chris Waddle, Ledley King, Jermaine Jenas and David Ginola is expected to be confirmed soon. Gary Mabbutt and Clive Allen will manage the side.

Electric motorbikes are wiped out in huge blaze MOTOGP organisers have pin-pointed an electrical short-circuit as being the likely cause of a big blaze at a Spanish racing circuit in Spain, which destroyed 23 electric motorcycles. The blaze, in a tent at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto racetrack at around 11.45pm last week, was tackled by fire

crews for almost seven hours, but they just couldn’t salvage the battery-powered racing bikes. It is believed that the canvas and plastic of the tent contributed to the rapid spread of fire, which was attended by five crews, pumping 600,000 litres of water. Race organisers have now released their initial findings after the fire in the E-paddock at Jerez de la Frontera. A statement said: “Although

we are awaiting the official conclusion of the investigation by Local Police,

initial evidence regarding the cause of the fire at the E-paddock of the FIM Enel

MotoE™ World Cup, at the Circuito de Jerez-Angel Nieto, seems to point to a short-circuit as the main cause of the incident. “The source of the short circuit has yet to be identified, but, once the fire broke out, it ignited the high-density battery, which is part of the high-performance charger used at MotoE™ events. “The motorbikes were not connected to the charging infrastructure at the time the fire began.”
