Dream holiday for dad and daughter was two-hour hell

Continued from Front Businessman Lee Parker, from Beccles, Suffolk, checked into the Catalonia Punta Del Rey in Las Caletillas, expecting four-star premises. However, he claims that when he complained to Tui, a rep told him the hotel had been graded wrongly, and Mr Parker was forced to shell out an extra £1,200 for alternative accommodation. This was on top of the £1,200 he had already coughed up for the holiday for him and his teenage daughter, Sophie, 17. Lee and Sophie are still on the holiday, but he insists he will chase Tui for compensation on their return home. The 39-year-old said that

when he booked the getaway, he requested a four-star hotel, “with a nice beach and good nightlife”. But he complained on Facebook: “We got to our room and this is when the real horror became apparent… no way on Earth were we in a four-star hotel; not even a three-star! “The room had dangerouslyexposed wiring, the toilet didn’t flush, broken door jambs left razor-sharp metal, the food was disgusting and the room completely filthy. Not what we asked for, or expected, for a four-star hotel!” In pictures taken by Mr Parker, exposed wiring can be seen above a bathroom mirror,

creating a clear hazard if in contact with moisture. Another picture highlights the extent of the poor drainage system, showing faeces floating in the toilet. And, despite requesting good nightlife, the hotel he was given was located in an area, which, he was told, translated to “Sleepy Town”. Lee added: “We arrived at about 3pm on Thursday, and, by 5pm, I was downstairs demanding we move. “The food was inedible, the toilet wouldn’t flush, and the wiring was dangerous. Somebody will be electrocuted there before long, with wiring like that. “The rep admitted the fourstar rating on the booking

confirmation was wrong and that I had been mis-sold the holiday.” Yet the hotel’s online description quite clearly describes it as four-star, and the distraught holiday-maker was told he and his daughter could move to a two or three-star hotel, but only for the same sum of money he had already paid. Instead, Lee by-passed Tui and booked a four-star hotel, but he could not move into it with his daughter until the next day. And, to add insult to injury, getting there cost him a €70 (£60.30) taxi fare. Single father Lee, who has raised Sophie on his own for five years, says he had to get an immediate transfer

after gauging his daughter’s reaction. “Sophie didn’t say anything,” he said. “I had promised her it would be lovely, but her face just dropped when we got there. “She was devastated, and I had no choice. We had to move. I have never in my life seen such a horrendous hotel.” A Tui spokesperson told Sun Online Travel: “We are so sorry to hear of Mr Parker’s experience in Tenerife, and we would like to thank him for bringing these issues to our attention. “We are currently investigating this and will be in direct contact with the customer.”

PM’s dodgy pressman resigns after making fake claims about him

PP leader Pablo Iglesias, subjected to false claims

A SENIOR government press officer has been forced to resign, after he faced charges of helping to cook up false claims against Spain’s leftwing political leader Pablo Iglesias.

The former editor of Interviu magazine, 59-year-old Alberto Pozas, has been accused of helping to trash the reputation of

the Podemos leader, with claims that both Iran and Venezuela funded his party. It came after he admitted to a judge in Madrid that he had handled a pen-drive, which was full of personal information on Iglesias. Much of the information, which appeared in his magazine in 2018, was acquired after an Iglesias assistant had her phone stolen in 2016. The stories, which also appeared in online news website OKdiario, came from

Spanish Government press officer Alberto Pozas forced to resign

fake documents, allegedly, obtained from “police informers”. One of the allegations, followed up by the national media, showed that Venezuela’s communist Maduro government paid Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias $272,000, through a bank in the Grenadines. However, it has since emerged that a bank statement had been rigged using online screenshots, and the names of various Venezuelan departments.

Judge Manuel GarcíaCastellón believes Pozas worked alongside disgraced former police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo, awaiting trial for countless charges of fraud, phone-tapping and other criminal behaviour. Villarejo, a shady figure, oversaw the “cesspit of the Spanish state” under the PP party. He amassed millions of euros, dozens of gold bars and hundreds of properties around Spain during his 20 years as the head of the National Police.

He oversaw a group, dubbed the “Patriotic Brigade”, who were, allegedly, tasked under former PP leader Mariano Rajoy’s government of finding, or fabricating, evidence against political opponents. Villarejo is also linked to the “Operation Kitchen” papers, which were stolen from former PP treasurer Luis Barcenas and, allegedly, contained damaging material against former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Hotel security guard saved life of a guest! A GUARD from security company Securitas has saved a tourist’s life, thanks to his knowledge and quick thinking.

Jose Juan Ortega was on duty at Arona’s Hotel Marylanza, when his rapid actions and know-how paid off handsomely. The drama unfolded on 26th March, when a guest called the hotel reception, claiming her Norwegian husband wasn’t breathing. Jose Juan grabbed the semi-automatic defibrillator immediately and headed up to their room. He checked to see if the tourist was breathing, but couldn’t find a pulse. Calmly, he began with CPR, and, fortunately, was able to stabilise the tourist before an ambulance arrived. The medics took the patient to Costa Adeje’s Quiron hospital, but, once there, the man suffered a second heart attack. He was stabilised again before the medical team transferred him to

Hospiten Sur for an emergency procedure of catheterisation.

When the man arrived he was in a coma, but, after surgery, he was admitted

for further treatment and observation. A few days passed, and family members

of the holiday-maker revealed that he was in full recuperation, and that they were eternally grateful for the security guard’s alertness. Medics have even said the guard’s actions saved the tourist’s life! Jose Juan admits that this was the first time he had used a semi-automatic defibrillator, but he admitted that he had just completed a first-aid course, which explained his knowledge of the equipment. Fernando Josa, director of the Marylanza Hotel, said the group have had a semiautomatic defibrillator inside their establishments since 2015. He added that all the staff receive training on how to use the specialised equipment. Fernando also believed that more public establishments should take responsibility by having semi-automatic defibrillators installed, because, as he said: “You never know when you will have to use it, and having one close by could make all the difference between life or death.”

AN Austrian man, detained by police in the early hours on Sunday for attempting to rape a woman outside the North Airport, has been released on bail. The incident happened after the young Mexican woman arrived at the airport early, for her scheduled plane. She wanted to prepare herself for the flight ahead, but she was unaware that the airport closed at night and did not open until 5am. But as she waited outside the building, the 41-year-old man asked if she had a light for his cigarette, then launched himself at her with a terrible attack, ending up sitting astride her. The unfortunate woman, frightened out of her wits, was

able to free herself. She ran towards an oncoming taxi immediately, to ask for help, and a British tourist in the cab obliged. The woman, along with her rescuer, contacted a security guard, via the intercom at the airport’s entrance, but they were told that he, and his other colleagues, were not allowed to leave their posts. At this stage, a Spanish woman, who was also waiting, witnessed what was happening and called the National Police, who soon found the culprit. He was charged and questioned at their headquarters, before being handed over to the courts. But, to the woman’s dismay, the would-be rapist was given bail.

Austrian on bail Jackpots for robbers, Vicious after early-hours attack but police will cash in THE Guardia Civil have arrested three La Laguna residents, aged 24-27, accused of at least 10 violent robberies in bars and restaurants in the Tegueste and Tacoronte municipalities.

Officers began their investigations in the middle of last year, when they became aware of a series of robberies, all of similar characteristics. And these lookalike robberies continued to the beginning of 2019, the thieves wedging doors open to get into the establishments, and then vandalising the interiors, before departing with the cash-register takings, as well as the money from slot machines. From their investigation, the officers were able to prove that the trio of men detained were part of a criminal gang. They moved around, trying to stay off the radar in privately-owned vehicles, and specialising in stealing cash only, from established businesses. The officers estimate that the sum stolen by the gang to date totals around 27,000 euros, yet just 4,000 euros has been recovered. All three individuals are now in the hands of the La Laguna courts, while Guardia officers are maintaining their investigation, because they suspect more individuals are implicated.

Dangerous jellyfish can give nasty sting

LAS Teresitas beach, in Santa Cruz, is flying the yellow warning flag because of an infestation of Portuguese Caravel jellyfish.

Tenerife capital’s Environmental Department was forced to put up the warning, flag last Sunday afternoon after discovering a large swarm of this dangerous jellyfish, also known as Portuguese Fragatas. Santa Cruz Council also

posted a warning on its Twitter account, asking residents and tourists to take precautions if attending the beach, and advising people to listen to the advice given by the lifeguard. It also warned that the sting from this type of creature could be painful, as well as dangerous. This jellyfish is known to be hugely populated in tropical regions. The Yellow flag is a warning sign, which will be flying on Las Teresitas beach until further notice.

Adeje opens new centre for autism

THE non-profit organisation Autismo Sur, mi lado azul (my blue side), was launched recently in Adeje, with a vital aim.

Its mission is to improve the quality of life of those with ASD (autism spectrum disorder, or TEA in Spanish) and that of their families, with services and specialised assistance. The organisation also wants to increase public awareness about ASD, and the need for increased respect of

the rights of all to a proper inclusion in our society. It will be assisted by the Canarian Autism Federation, run by parents and professionals dealing with ASD, lobbying for needed services and family assessments, as well as specialised training and education. The group was formed in 2017 to help society, in general, understand autism, at a personal and professional level. Association President Carmen says that is why they have launched their current campaign, “conecTEA”

working with therapists, from school to home. In other words, she said, working to educate fully, all those who are in contact with people who have autism, in their daily lives. The association is placing special emphasis on working to help in the family setting; finding out how to help and improve assistance in the home. Attending the association’s official launch in Adeje were Councillors for health, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, for tourism, Ermitas Moreira García, and for heritage, Desiderio Afonzo Ruiz.

NEWS IN BRIEF Pensioner’s life saved, German is crushed to death

A GERMAN, aged 56, died, tragically, when he was trapped between a wall and a truck last Friday in La Orotava. The emergency services were alerted at about 7am, and troops of firefighters were sent to the scene to break down the wall, and, hopefully, free him. Unfortunately, by the time they reached him, he had suffered a heart attack, and medics, using CPR, were unable to revive him.

Set fee for lost-luggage?

THE European court will decide in the next few months whether airlines should pay out thousands to travellers in lost-luggage compensation. Under proposals, flight operators could have to pay an automatic €1,400 when they lose a passenger’s luggage, while current pay-outs vary, depending on individual national court rulings. The problem arose after a preliminary case in Barcelona was brought against Spanish airline Vueling, over its baggagehandling procedures. Airports lose more than 20 million bags a year, while the average sum claimed by air passengers for missing luggage last year was €808.

Virus hits Government computers

TWO National Police officers saved the life of a 71-year-old man, thanks only to Local Police, who were in the vicinity.

The incident happened in Santa Cruz, at the entrance of the National Police station, on Gongora street. The elderly man collapsed after suffering a heart attack, at around 7pm, and the officers immediately took the resuscitation equipment out of their car

SPAIN’S Ministry of Defence computers were infected with a computer virus for three months before being detected, according to media reports. The department believes a “foreign power” is behind the computer attack, in an attempt to access military secrets. The recently-released Annual National Security Report said: “There has been an increase in the aggressiveness of some foreign intelligence services.” But Spanish media says that Ministry officials believe the complexity of the virus suggests it is not the work of computer hackers, and they are 90% certain it is not the work of an insider.

Costly racing pigeons rescued

GUARDIA Civil officers, based in Sueca, Valencia, recovered 35 competition pigeons worth €52,000, which had been stolen in the Ribera area of Castille and Leon. The current Spanish champion was among the birds, and the mass disappearance alarmed the pigeon-racing community. Guardia investigators, with the co-operation of the Valencian Federation of Pigeon Fanciers, carried out a series of inspections in three towns, where they found 35 pigeons, including the Spanish champ. Officers arrested one person, charged with animal cruelty as well as stealing the birds, having found nine bodies of recently-killed pigeons. Another two people are under investigation.

to resuscitate the pensioner. To their astonishment, however, they discovered that the defibrillator wasn’t working properly because the battery hadn’t been charged. They went ahead, manually, with CPR, awaiting a medical team, but, fortunately, Local Police officers happened to be nearby, and had the specialised, emergency equipment in their patrol car. The officers loaned the National Police their portable defibrillator, which was working, and the elderly

man was resuscitated, successfully. Shortly afterwards, an ambulance arrived, and medics assessed the man, who was in recovery. They took him to Candelaria Hospital, where he is stable and out of danger, When the Spanish Confederation of Police (CEP) secretary was questioned about the incident, he said it was “inadmissible”, and demanded an explanation about why the equipment hadn’t been charged properly.

Tenerife home searched in blitz on child-porn group

A FOOTBALL coach, based in Barcelona, was among the 20 people arrested by the National Police, across 15 Spanish provinces, on suspicion of belonging to a child pornography ring.

And at least one dwelling in Tenerife was searched, especially its computer, along with raids on a further 29 homes around mainland Spain. A Sevilla pensioner was also detained, and a further 10 people are believed to remain on the radar, but have not been arrested. Spanish media say the

Emergency team rescue struggling sea swimmer THE Canarian Search and Rescue team were summoned to rescue a 23-yearold man last Sunday afternoon, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.

The helicopter was dispatched after a call had been received by the emergency services at around midday, saying an individual had been spotted

struggling in the sea, around the Arucas coastline in the north of the island. The helicopter was accompanied by the Maritime Search and Rescue team, and the man was found, close to the Tinoca coastline. He was rescued at around 12.30pm and was taken to the Doctor Negrin Hospital for observation because of the bruising he had suffered. Local Police, along with the Guardia Civil, were also present to assist in the rescue.

Church abuse has to be reported to courts

IRISHMAN Peter Wilson, 32, who flew into Tenerife from Dublin for a holiday on Friday, 22nd March, has not been seen since the Saturday night/ Sunday morning. His family have appealed on social media for people

travelling to, or living in, the area to contact the authorities, in Tenerife or in Ireland, if they have any information about his whereabouts. Peter was staying in the Malibu Park Hotel, in Torviscas Alto, Adeje, and is believed to have spent time in Costa Adeje and Playa de Las Americas. He is approximately 5ft 8ins,

with hazel/green eyes and dark-brown hair. The family say he has distinctive tattoos on his arm, of a clock and roses. “Any sighting is important, your help is vital,” his sister wrote in a Facebook post. A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

Rock-climber escapes death after a 10m fall

A GROUP of Roman Catholic bishops in Spain have created new rules, forcing churchgoers to report alleged sexual abuse to civil court authorities.

The Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) said they were “along the same Vatican lines,” of those used to protect children and

vulnerable adults. Now, new Vatican guidelines state that any abuse known, or suspected, in the church, must be reported to a civil court, and a fine of between €1,500-5,000 has been established for those who fail to comply. Spain’s previous protocol, in 2010, simply tells church authorities to advise victims of sexual abuse to inform relatives, or report crimes to a court.

Sick captain delays flight

A BRITISH rock-climber has been rescued by firefighters, after falling 10 metres on Spain’s Costa Blanca and sustaining severe injuries.

The woman, whose identity is not yet known, suffered a

head injury, a ruptured hip, severe injuries to the face and other body contusions, according to the Alicante’s Fire Brigade. The incident happened at 1pm last Monday at the Morro de Toix headland, after she was reported to have fallen into a chasm and was rescued, still alive, by an

Alpha 1 helicopter team. She was taken to Benidorm, where an ambulance transported her to a Villajoyosa hospital. A man died while rockclimbing in the same spot in January, and, in December 2017, another British climber was wounded after falling five metres.

A RYANAIR flight, on route to Prestwick, Scotland, had to do an about-turn to Tenerife South Airport, just 13 minutes after take-off, because the captain was taken ill. The

aircraft

was

granted

maximum priority, and the runway was cleared so that an ambulance and its crew could carry out any intervention necessary. The incident happened last Sunday, and, because of the unforeseen circumstances, the airport had to activate the emergency protocol, causing some panic, as well as delays to other flights.

driver Menacing prisoner’s inHeart-attack horror bus crash threat to kill officers A DANGEROUS inmate at the state penitentiary in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, has assaulted four on-duty civil servants and threatening to kill them.

The incident happened last Sunday morning, early on, and the prison officer’s union has denounced the frightening assault. In its report, the union clarifies that the incident was serious, saying the situation arose after a dangerous inmate was disrespectful towards the staff. He would not carry out their instructions, and the prisoner began to threaten them verbally, while throwing objects at them. In addition, he let them know that he would kill them if they entered his cell.

The officers proceeded with protocol and tried to immobilise the inmate because of his violent attitude. They also wanted to calm him down, to prevent him from injuring himself. This was the moment he assaulted all three officers, as well as the chief officer, and all four suffered injuries, which had to be treated by a centre doctor. A few of the officers were later taken to a nearby

hospital for further treatment, because of seriousness of their injuries. The officers’ union is also making an official report, regarding the lack of trained prison officers and doctors at the Las Palmas Penitentiary Centre. The union, which states that this centre is considered one of the most dangerous throughout Spain, is demanding an immediate solution.

Awkward task for undercover police

LOCAL Malaga police officers were shocked in Benalmadena when they found a man in his thirties, bleeding profusely around the crutch area of his trousers, as well as having breathing difficulties.

He told them he had attempted to amputate his penis, but, when asked to identify himself, he said he was an alien from outer space!

The officers approached the man after spotting him walking in a disorientated fashion, then rushed him off to a nearby hospital. Doctors there found that the man had tied several rubber bands around his penis, as well as tightlybound shoelaces, causing

severe injuries, and they carried out an emergency operation. He has been tested for substance abuse as well as alcohol, with negative results both times, and the police are continuing with their investigation.

AN out-of-control bus left a trail of destruction in Malaga, after the driver suffered a heart attack while at the wheel.

The bus flipped several parked cars in one street, and uprooted trees, before coming to a stop. Passengers alerted emergency services after the driver suffered what

was said to be a “fading”. He was later found to have suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. Medics were able to stabilise the man, who was later transferred by ambulance to Malaga’s Regional Hospital. Despite the carnage, however, no one else was injured, although 13 passengers were trapped inside the bus because the doors were damaged badly.

Wanted drug-dealer held

A BRITISH man, aged 47, was detained at Las Palmas airport by Gran Canaria’s National Police, via an international warrant for his drug-trafficking.

The UK authorities requested that the man, if arrested, should be detained and returned to British soil.

The police, who had their suspicions, located him at the airport, while he was trying to get off the island, by taking a flight to Bournemouth. Undercover officers placed themselves around the airport until the fugitive was spotted, and they eventually detained him. A corresponding police report was issued, and the wanted man was passed over to the Judicial Authorities.

Doctor Who Series 12 being filmed on island

After flying into Tenerife on 1st April, the Doctor Who production crew and cast, including Jodie Whittaker, Bradley Walsh, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole, started work on filming Series 12, the following day.

On 2nd-3rd April, there was filming in a landscape, dominated by pines in volcanic soil around Montaña Samara, near Mount Teide, and they have all been staying in the area of Playa Arena and Puerto Santiago. On 5th April, the cast travelled to the other end of the island, in Santa Cruz, to film in front of the Auditorio de Tenerife, and Whittaker, Walsh and

Cole were, reportedly, there. The three actors were not in the formal gear they were seen wearing, during location filming in Wales. At least five guest stars were said to be with the cast, including one actor known for playing creatures. There are also reports of actors sporting brightly-coloured wigs, in shades of green, pink and yellow. The series should be shown early next year, and a person who worked on one of the episodes over here was told not say anything about his/ her involvement, until May 2020. This date could be just after one of the episodes filmed in Tenerife is scheduled to be shown, and, if this is the case, the series might not premiere until the April.

History made as black hole takes first bow

A BLACK hole, pictured for the first time in human history, was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHT), a vast array of telescopes all across the planet, which were synchronised to work together.

The image, revealed at a press conference in Brussels, was beamed around the world. It showed the first, direct, visual evidence of the supermassive black hole in the centre of the Messier 87 (M87) galaxy and its shadow. The image shows a bright ring, formed as light bends in the intense gravity around a black hole, which is 6.5 billion times more massive than the Sun. The black hole’s boundary, the “event horizon” from

which the EHT takes its name, is around 2.5 times smaller than the shadow it casts, and measures just under 40 billion kilometres across. While this may sound large, this ring is only about 40 microarcseconds across, which is equivalent to measuring the length of a credit card on the Moon’s surface. The M87 galaxy, one of the biggest and brightest in the known universe, is 53.49

million light years away from Earth. It is notable for shooting out a fast jet of charged, subatomic particles, which stretches for some 5,000 light years, making it the perfect target for the EHT project. Although the telescopes making up the EHT are not physically connected, they are able to synchronise their recorded data with atomic clocks, which, precisely, time their observations.

Mighty cruise liner Two ships, two pregnancies damaged by crane …and two fine rescue jobs!

THE world’s largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, damaged when a construction crane collapsed on it, in a port in the Bahamas, has arrived at the Navantia shipyard in Cadiz for repairs.

It has resulted in three Sunday sailings being cancelled, leaving some travellers decidedly unhappy, especially a honeymoon couple, who booked on to the cancelled cruises and expressed their concern, via Twitter. Bridegroom Aaron Gillespie wrote: “My wedding is Saturday. #OasisoftheSeas was my honeymoon. Serious emotional damage and chaos starting my marriage. Can you please fix my honeymoon?”

The incident left eight crew members injured, and it also damaged the outdoor stage on the upper deck, and several suites. Fortunately, there were no passengers on board. The cancelled departures included one for this weekend and the third a week later. But the ship is expected to resume its programme on 5th May from Barcelona. The company said: “Guests on the three sailings will receive full refunds, as well as full credit toward a future cruise. We are sorry for the disruption to their holiday plans.” The gigantic ship, launched in 2008, can cater for more than 6,400 passengers, on top of the 2,100 crew members. The liner is expected to return to the Cadiz shipyard later in the year for a scheduled refit.

THE Canarian Air Rescue Centre came to the aid of two pregnant women last Sunday, within 150 kilometres of each other on cruise ships in the Atlantic, and both heading for Gran Canaria. The first rescue came at 10am, after the Centre received a call from the MSC Seaview, 500km from the island, requesting the evacuation of a 43-year-old pregnant crew member from Portugal, who had gone into premature labour. The Seaview was 500km off the Gran Canarian coast, so an emergency helicopter, along with a small rescue aeroplane, headed for the boat’s location. The Super Puma helicopter arrived at 10.22am and crew members from the emergency helicopter lowered a hoist to take the pregnant woman on to the chopper. The ship’s doctor also went along, because of possible difficulties that could arise with mother and baby during the ride. The helicopter pilot made his way to Gran Canaria’s

university hospital, arriving soon after midday. The hospital medical team, who had also been alerted, were standing by, and the pregnant woman later had an emergency Caesarian. Happily, both mum and baby were safe and healthy. Coincidentally, during this rescue operation, the Air Rescue Centre received a second call for help, from the World Odyssey cruise ship, some 150km further away and needing assistance for a pregnant American, suffering with a serious infection and in need of immediate medical attention. Another emergency aeroplane and helicopter were dispatched, and both pilots were made aware of the other cruise-ship

evacuation taking place at the same time. Once the aeroplane located the cruise ship’s position, the co-ordinates were passed on to the helicopter crew, who headed towards the cruiser immediately. They arrived at 2.34pm, and the team lowered a hoist to collect the pregnant 20-year-old, as well as the ship’s nurse. Once aboard, they were taken straight to the Dr Negrin hospital, in Las Palmas. They arrived at the hospital’s helipad at 5.40pm, and, again, a medical team were on stand-by, awaiting the patient. This tale also had a happy ending because the woman gave birth to a healthy, baby girl the next day.

IN June 2017, firefighter Miguel Roldán had been working for 18 hours on a migrant rescue ship in the Mediterranean.

A phone call after 10pm, when it was completely dark, warned him that another migrant boat was sinking. Miguel set out with two of his colleagues in a small boat to find the drowning migrants. They sailed for 200 metres, then turned off the boat’s engines and followed the screams for help. They found the migrants within 10 minutes, but were denied permission to rescue them. They were in Libyan waters and had to negotiate with the North African country. True, they were granted permission to carry out a rescue operation 15 minutes later, but that gap was an eternity for migrants struggling to stay alive. “We could only save half of them, and many people drowned,” recalled Miguel, a 32-year-old firefighter from the southern city of Málaga, who has been part of the underwater unit of the Seville City Hall Fire Department since 2013. Yet his act of solidarity that day, as well as his help on other rescue missions in the summer of 2017, could land him behind bars for 20 years

because, it was said, he had aided illegal immigration and worked with humantraffickers. Miguel, who had previous experience of rescue missions in the Aegean Sea, next to the Greek island of Lesbos, decided to spend 20 days of his holiday in June 2017 aboard Iuventa, an old fishing vessel, converted into a rescue ship by German NGO Jugend Rettet. The crew departed from

Malta’s La Valletta port and sailed until they were 17 nautical miles from the Libyan coast, in international waters. And in those 20 days, the team rescued 5,000 people. While Miguel had to return to Seville, the crew continued to carry out rescue missions in the central Mediterranean migration route, which was one of the most-popular ways to enter Europe, and they saved

around 14,000 people in the following weeks. But their rescue missions were cut short on 2nd August, when Italian authorities seized the Iuventa and launched an investigation into the crew for “facilitating illegal immigration”. The probe led to a judge, in the Sicilian city of Trapani, accusing the entire crew, comprising seven Germans, two Scots and Miguel, of helping human-traffickers.

Masons raise €1,000 for autistic boy’s campaign

Lee Bullen (centre left) being presented with the cheque by W. Bro. Tony Perridge (left), WM Steve Knight (centre right) and W. Bro. Ray Shaw

A MASONIC lodge in Los Cristianos has donated €1,000 to the crowd-funding campaign for a nonverbal, autistic boy to receive groundbreaking, stem-cell therapy in the US. Worshipful Master Steve Knight, Worshipful Brother Tony Perridge and Worshipful Brother Ray Shaw (Treasurer) of Lodge Ave Fenix No.73, presented the cheque to Danny Bullen’s father, Lee, last week. Danny, who attends a special-needs school in Güímar and requires his

family’s assistance for basic tasks, such as using the toilet, was diagnosed with autism in 2010, when he was just two. The cute 11-year-old, son of British writer Lee Bullen and Spanish teacher Irma Guanche, travelled to the Art and Science Surgicenter in Miami last month for stemcell therapy, costing $15,000, and they hope to travel again in August for a $10,000 procedure. To help with the costs, Danny’s parents have launched a crowd-funding campaign on GoFundMe, from which they hope to raise €30,000 for the two sessions, and some of the travel and accommodation expenses. They have already raised

around €10,000 through kind offerings by residents and Tenerife-based groups, such as Helping Hands, which also donated €1,000, and the CD Tenerife supporter’s club Armada Sur, which raised €100 during a recent home match. Meanwhile, Lee’s relatives in Australia held a ticket event for Danny’s campaign, raising a whopping €2,500. The latest generous donation by the Masons came from funds raised during Tony Perridge’s year as Master, which had recently been earmarked for Danny’s cause. The Ave Fenix No.73 members emphasised the charitable nature of the organisation, saying “We raise money for good causes, and

that has always been the Masonic aim.” Lee, who wrote a book, ‘Beset’, about coming to terms with Danny’s condition, said: “Doctors introduced umbilical cord, blood stem cells with cells from my son’s bone marrow adipose tissue. “He had his first treatment in March, and the early signs are very encouraging. He is much more alert, and has already started to use a few words. “Undergoing stem-cell therapy over two or three visits usually brings better results, which is why we hope to take Danny to the US at least twice. “All symptoms related to ASD (Autism Spectrum

Disorder) have completely disappeared in many young patients.” However, while early studies have showed promise for stem-cell therapy as an autism treatment, scientists believe it is still in its infancy and say more research is needed. According to the National Autistic Society, autism affects one in 100 children in the UK, while the Autism Speaks charity estimates that one in 59 people in the US have ASD. (UGT) and Workers’ Trade Union (USO) have called for a strike of ground staff at AENA airports on 21st and 24th April.

It follows an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions, as well as new contracts for handlers.

There is still a chance that an agreement can be struck in talks this week. But should negotiations fail,

some 60,000 workers are expected to strike at Spain’s airports. Easter week is one of the busiest travel periods in the country because the Spanish tend to take holidays and relocate to other parts of the country. It is also an extremely busy period for foreign tourists, because the week coincides with school holidays across Europe. According to Spanish airport authority AENA, an estimated five million travellers will travel through Spanish airports, aboard 32,500 flights during Easter Week. No details have yet been released about flight cancellations or delays, but authorities usually strike a deal with unions to agree to provide “minimum services”.

Spanish strikes may wreck Easter plans PILOTS on Air Nostrum, airport ground staff and Renfe machinists, all plan industrial action during the busy Easter travel period.

The pilots’ union Sepla is supporting industrial action by their members, who work for Valencia-based airline Air Nostrum. They have proposed a series of six 24-hour strikes to take place during Semana Santa and the following days. Proposed April dates are: 15th, 16th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd and 24th. It stems from a long-running complaint over working conditions, tied in with outsourcing services. Two of Spain’s largest unions, the General Union of Workers

Mystery plane A miracle as residents passenger avoid crumbling wall facing a prison sentence AROUND 30 people, including at least five minors, were evacuated from their homes during the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) after a wall, adjacent to their apartment block, began crumbling.

A JUDGE from Fuerteventura’s High Courts in Puerto del Carmen has ordered a plane passenger to prison without bail.

He is a potential drugtrafficking suspect because 400kg of cocaine was found, hidden inside the small, abandoned aircraft. It was left at the airport three weeks ago, after landing. And, say court sources, the passenger is the only person who could possibly provide any information about what

was hidden onboard. The crew, who have not been located, are unaccounted for, but it is believed that they dumped the aeroplane and fled the airport with the passenger, as soon as it touched down. The plane was searched thoroughly by police officers and sniffer dogs, two days after its arrival, and has since been locked up and sealed as evidence. It seems that the aircraft wasn’t destined for Fuerteventura, and that the island was probably just a stopover.

The chilling incident happened at around 2.20am at the Paseo de Chil, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. The Canarian emergency services were alerted, and Local Police, as well as the Gran Canaria fire services, were dispatched to the scene to evaluate the situation. Upon arrival, they began evacuating residents from the building next to the dodgy wall as a safety precaution, and the majority of the residents were relocated. The road was also cordoned off to prevent people, as well as traffic, passing through the area. Las Palmas Mayor Augusto Hiildago attended the scene, along with advisors, to assess the seriousness of the

collapsed wall. Local Police will use drones with qualified technicians, to get a better understanding of how and why the wall collapsed. They

will also evaluate the building’s infrastructure before deciding whether residents will be allowed to return to their homes.

Olden-day pirates could cost Spain a golden bonanza

12th April 2019 - 18th April 2019

A COLOMBIAN court has embargoed the Spanish galleon San José, sunk by British pirates near Cartagena de Indias in the 18th century.

The moves comes in response to an appeal by a US treasure-hunting firm, which is claiming the rights to 50% of the goods on board. The High Court of Barranquilla, which has overturned a ruling of October 2017 and returned to that of the same month in 1994, means the shipwreck is again under government custody. This earlier verdict was passed after Sea Search Armada (SSA) sued the Colombian government in 1989, claiming 100% of its “financial, historic, cultural and scientific” treasure belonged to the company, “if it were found within the continental platform”, or within a set of secret co-ordinates, dating back to 1982. A lower court in Barranquilla ruled that the treasure on board should be split 50-50 between Colombia and SSA. But at the time, the San José had not been found. The galleon, famously mentioned in Nobel Literature Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez’s novel “Love in the Time of Cholera”, with the main characters hoping to trace it and claim the treasure inside, finally emerged on 4th

December, 2015. The historic mystery had been solved, 300 years on, and announced by former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. His government put the job of bringing the ship to the surface, and towing it to dry land, out to tender among a series of foreign specialist companies, the terms of which included a percentage of the valuable cargo, of gold and other precious metal, being granted to the successful bidder. But Santos’ successor, Iván Duque, has postponed the appointment, continually, and his deputy, Marta Lucía Ramírez, has said: “The Columbian Government will not allow the galleon’s

treasures to end up in antiques shops all over the world.” He added: “Our history, and the legacy of our ancestors, will not become trading goods, or the property of the entire planet’s collectors and treasure-hunters. “This is part of our commitment to protecting the heritage of all the people of Colombia, and President Iván Duque will not spare any effort in this task.” Colombia has a law in place, dating back to July 2013, which requires “submerged heritage to be protected, recovered and made visible”. This legislation covers ships and their artefacts, sunk in

Colombian waters, plus anything on board, irrespective of the reason for sinking. But it does not include raw materials, such as pearls, corals, precious or semiprecious stones, sand or wood, nor catalogued, tangible goods, which would have had an exchange or monetary value, such as coins and gold ingots. As a result, it could be that the contents of the Spanish ship are not covered by this law. However, it includes a “public or private alliance” clause, which allows any firm charged with recovering the ship, artefacts or cargo, to receive financial compensation of up to 50%

of the value of any goods not considered national heritage. To this end, if the San José were filled with gold ingots, these may not be considered to be “Colombian national heritage”, and the company which lifts it to the surface may be entitled to half their value. The San Jose was loaded with gold, sent by the Viceroy of New Granada, as well as silver from Perú, and precious stones. It was scheduled to be heading for Spain, but the galleon had not even left the New World when, on 8th June, 1708, it was attacked by British pirates and sunk by cannon-fire.

Brexit headwinds bludgeon the pound

at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks.

The pound has fallen back over the past couple of weeks, as heightened Brexit uncertainty unnerves some GBP investors. This uncertainty has also created some notable volatility in sterling, which saw GBP/EUR trade between 1.17 and 1.15, before settling at 1.16, whilst lifting EUR/GBP from 0.85 to 0.86. Meanwhile, GBP/ USD has slumped from 1.32 to 1.30, and EUR/USD has stumbled from 1.13 to 1.12. Trade in the pound has become increasingly erratic in recent weeks, with elevated Brexit uncertainty resulting in some dramatic swings in movement, and

weakness in GBP exchange rates. At the same time, the euro faced some pressure in late March, as Eurozone economic data continued to underwhelm, before stabilising in April, as some data began to improve. This has resulted in the US dollar being the strongest performer of the three currencies, in the past couple of weeks, boosted by some

robust US data, and safehaven demand. Expect to see Brexit continue to drive volatility in the pound for the foreseeable future, especially if the UK crashes out of the EU without a deal. While the outcome of Brexit will also impact the euro, the immediate focus for EUR investors will likely be on the European Central Bank’s

upcoming rate decision. Finally, the ongoing US-China trade talks will likely be in the spotlight for USD investors, because a deal could undermine the US dollar, as traders are moving out of safe-haven assets. Your Home Made Perfect Tuesday 16th April, BBC2, 20.00

Imagine stepping inside your home, but suddenly it’s transformed beyond your wildest dreams, without ever opening a can of paint or lifting a single brick. Angela Scanlon presents a brand new property makeover series like no other. In a first for British television, cutting-edge virtual reality and visual effects enable people to see what their future home could look like, before building it in reality. Never have plans come to life like this: people can instantly explore a stunning transformation of their bedroom, walk around an incredible double-height kitchen, or see how adding a gigantic picture window will turn a dingy lounge into a showstopping sitting room. In each episode, a family will be presented with two radically different designs by two extraordinary architects. Which ambitious renovation idea will they choose for their perfect home? Thirty four year-old Andy and 32 year-old Esther have lived in their three-bedroom house in Stirling, Scotland for almost four years. With idyllic views of the river and castle the couple love where they live, but with three small children their house is cramped and no longer works for family life. Andy and Esther know the house needs changing but have no idea what to do. Esther is keen to keep a separate space, but Andy thinks they should open the whole downstairs up. They could extend into the garden, but they are not sure if that’s the best solution. The couple are locked in stalemate over how to spend their budget of £55,000, so are handing over control to two competing architects - Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison. Laura and Robert will go head to head to redesign Andy and Esther’s home. Laura’s specialism is domestic architecture, while Robert is inspired by the way people live in all corners of the world and has no fear in completely rethinking a space to defy convention. At the design studio, using virtual reality, Robert and Laura pitch their bold ideas to completely transform Andy and Esther’s home. The moment the couple put on the VR goggles they are transported back into the house they have long struggled to make a home. Then suddenly, walls start moving, ceilings lift up and light pours in. Andy and Esther are stunned as each of the architects’ visions are revealed. Each radically different design fits the brief in wildly different ways. They are drawn to the practicality of Laura’s but blown away by Robert’s creativity, and now face a difficult decision: which one will they decide to build? But the most important reveal is yet to come. Having seen a succession of extraordinary digital visions, it’s time to see what has been built in real life. When Angela and the chosen architect arrive at the house, what was once a nondescript semi is now anything but! The real-world reveal rivals anything seen in virtual reality, whilst achieving the ultimate goal of uniting Andy and Esther through a life-changing transformation.

Victoria and Albert are still at loggerheads after their return from Osborne and Victoria ignores a letter from Skerrett, who has now left her service, whilst Albert intends to depart for Cambridge, having been invited to be Chancellor of the University. Across London, a reception for foreign diplomats is interrupted by the news of a cholera outbreak in Soho and the eccentric Dr. Snow visits those suffering and becomes determined to find the cause of the disease. With the illness spiralling out of control, Victoria visits a hospital with Palmerston and meets a young nurse called Florence Nightingale who ells her that the disease cannot be airborne. As a result, Victoria summons Snow to the Palace just as he he makes a breakthrough. Meanwhile, the Francatellis host an opening dinner for their new hotel and Penge has noticed the growing attraction between Sophie and Joseph.

Lee Mack’s multi award-winning hit show, and the longest-running sitcom on air, returns to BBC One. We jump straight back into the suburban madness as married couple Lee (Lee Mack) and Lucy (Sally Bretton), Lee’s lovably feckless father, Frank (Bobby Ball), best friends world-weary Toby (Hugh Dennis) and uptight ice-queen Anna (Abigail Cruttenden), Lucy’s generally disappointed father Geoffrey (Geoffrey Whitehead) and nice mum Wendy (Deborah Grant), show that courage and selflessness are in very, very short supply. In episode one, Toby organises a sponsored parachute jump to raise money for a Children’s Ward in his hospital. Supportively, Lee, Lucy, Anna and the grandparents all agree to take part, but once airborne will everyone pluck up the courage to jump? Surely any emerging fears will be suppressed for the good of all on board, and the soon-to-be-benefiting children?

It’s another beautiful day in Bognor Regis, but Peter (Toby Jones)’s world is clouded by the events of the previous day. Still feeling deeply disturbed, he tries to shake the images from his mind as he prepares to take a church group on a day trip to a donkey sanctuary. But when he spots the vulnerable young woman from the night before being mistreated by strangers, he makes a rash decision. Meanwhile Kayla (Erin Kellyman) endures her first day of work at the Snack Shack and Joy (Marcia Warren) is visited by a community nurse, who is worried about the deterioration of her health.

The documentary will provide an urgent look at the science of climate change and the potential solutions to this global threat, combining footage that reveals the already devastating impact of climate change on our planet, with interviews from some of the world’s leading climate scientists. After one of the hottest years on record, climatologists and meteorologists explain the effects of climate change on both the human population and the natural world. Scientists, including Dr James Hansen, Dr Michael Mann and Professor Catherine Mitchell, will forensically unpack the science behind the extreme weather conditions of recent years - which have seen unprecedented storms and catastrophic wildfires - as well as detailing how the accelerating rate at which the world’s ice is melting is causing sea level rises, and how deforestation is exacerbating the problem of global warming by adding to CO2 in the atmosphere. The film will deliver an unflinching exploration of what dangerous levels of climate change could mean for human populations, what is likely to happen if global warming exceeds 1.5 degrees and if major reductions in CO2 emissions are not made in the next decade.

Lots of Blondie moments!

KEDDY’S Entertainment thoroughly enjoy catching up with all the various aspects of the entertainment scene, here in sunny Tenerife.

We are so fortunate to have such an abundance of great artistes and talent on the island, and are pleased to introduce Zoe Leigh-Jackson, aka Blondie! We thought her story might inspire and encourage other talented individuals, to take that leap of faith! Zoe showed an interest in music at the tender age of six. Her parents could see her dedication and passion, and arranged singing lessons for her. She is so grateful to them for recognising how much she loved music, because this helped to encourage and inspire her to nurture her talent. “I used what experience I gained from these lessons to enter talent competitions, and to build more and more confidence in performing on stage,” she said. Zoe continued with her music, until beginning secondary school. “I realised my exams were more important, and decided to put music on

hold, for the sake of my education.” However, after dedicating her time to her studies, and successfully achieving excellent passes in all her subjects, she realised just how much she missed performing, and being around music. “I looked into starting a rock band with some friends who were also musicians, and thought it was time to concentrate on building a career in something I truly loved. We called ourselves Amphora, and became a huge success, playing weekly gigs with a really good following. “We wrote our own music and released an album, and were fortunate enough to tour the UK. I really loved being involved in music, and wanted to study it in more depth. I attended college and completed a course with a triple distinction. I then decided to further my education at Northumbria University in Newcastle, where I achieved a first-class honours degree.” Zoe has visited Tenerife over the years, with her family. Like many of us, living and holidaying here, she was completely captivated, “falling in love with this wonderful island”. She

decided to relocate here, to bring her music further afield. She arrived in March 2016, undertaking bar work, initially, to support herself, and working hard on putting together a show. “I spent time watching other entertainers, learning and networking, which resulted in me getting my first gig in Los Gigantes, with my Soul Sister show. “I was very fortunate to gain regular work, which led me to eventually be able leave the bar, and focus, solely, on being an entertainer.” Zoe performed with her Soul Sister show for 18 months, loving every second. However, she came to realise that most venues were looking for tribute acts. Although this was something she had not considered before, she decided to explore her options, and see if there was a niche that she could fill. “It was my Dad who suggested Blondie! I laughed, because I never saw myself as a Blondie tribute.” Her father gave her Blondie’s greatest-hits album. It was the only CD in her car, and she found herself falling in love with her music, without even realising. “It became apparent that, perhaps, this was the new

approach that was needed. I thought to myself, what have I got to lose?” This was the impetus to her launching One Way Or Another, It’s Blondie. “After three months of dedication, a lot of hard work and help from other entertainers, I made the leap and became a Blondie tribute.” Her first booking was at The Whiskey Jar, one of her favourite venues in which to perform. She was absolutely petrified! Months of prepping and promoting culminated in friends and other entertainers all coming along to support her. “I was a bag of nerves, but, as they say, the show must go on! “Months of hard work had led up to this moment, and there was no turning back. I gave the best performance of my life, no matter how nervous! The crowd were dancing and singing along, and the amount of great feedback I received, when I finished my show, made me realise the gamble had paid off. “The change was justified, and was probably the best career decision of my life. Since that night, my show has gone from strength to strength. I was so grateful to be booked as Blondie. I love

seeing the audience having a brilliant time. “I appreciate every venue I perform in. Thank you to all the lovely people on the island, who have helped and guided me along the way. I really wouldn’t be where I am today, if it hadn’t been for my lovely dad giving me the Blondie CD, and asking what was the worst that could happen. “I want to also thank the team at Keddy’s Entertainment, for all their support. It has been lovely, being interviewed and featuring this week in Canarian Weekly, Tenerife’s No.1 British weekly newspaper.” We think that Zoe deserves every success after her hard work, passion and determination. Well, that’s all from us here at Keddy’s Entertainment. Until next time. However, if you would like to see where Zoe aka Blondie performs, then visit her Facebook page, One Way Or Another It’s Blondie, and check out her weekly gig listing. If you have an interesting entertainment story, please drop us an email: info@ keddysentertainment.com. You never know - we could be reading all about you, very soon.

Manchester Consulate is reopening for Brexit SPAIN is reopening its Manchester Consulate, in response to requests from expats, starting to panic about getting appointments in time to resolve their affairs before Brexit, and also to register to vote in the general elections on 28th April.

Spanish Government spokeswoman Isabel Celaá said in a press conference that the office, which closed in 2011, would again serve the North and North-West of England, North and West Yorkshire, East Wales, the West Midlands, East and South Yorkshire and the Isle of Man. But Cumbria misses out because it is covered by the Edinburgh Consulate, which is one of only two still open, along with London. But, said Ms Celaá: “Since the Manchester Consulate

closed eight years ago, the number of Spaniards resident in the UK has grown considerably. “In light of an imminent Brexit, we need to reinforce Consular presence in the UK, to offer legal security to Spaniards living there, and to help them with all the information and admin they require.” The spokeswoman, also her

Government’s Education Minister, recalled that from 2012 to the end of 2018, the Consulate in London had gone from 68,668 Spaniards registered to 128,232, and, in the same period, Edinburgh had increased from 10,782 to 25,326. And these figures represent around half-to-a-third of Spaniards living in Britain, who are believed to

number between 250,000300,000. “The perspective of an imminent Brexit makes this situation even more of a concern,” added Ms Celaá. “Even if the UK approves its exit deal and implements a transition period until the end of 2020, it’s obvious that the level of worries and number of questions among our nationals living in the UK

will increase. “As this time draws to a close, so will consultations, transactions and applications to the Consulates in London and Edinburgh.” During the press conference, she also referred to the European Parliament agreeing to visa-free travel for British nationals, post-Brexit, up to a maximum of 90 days in every 180 days, and to the Council of Europe and the European Parliament having qualified Gibraltar, officially, as a ‘colony’. Celaá saw it as “a great step forward for Spain”, but Gibraltar officials were said to be furious. However, prior to the UK joining the European Union in 1974, and voting to remain in it the following year during a public referendum, The Rock was officially known by the UK Government as a “colony”. In more recent years, and given the negative connotations of a “colony”, Gibraltar has been known as a “British enclave” or an “overseas territory”.

THE debate over the right to euthanasia has been reignited in Spain, following a 70-year-old man’s arrest by police last week for helping his terminally-ill wife bring an end to her life. Ángel Hernández, who admitted giving his partner, María José Carrasco, a lethal dose of sodium pentobarbital, spent a night in a prison cell at a Madrid police station. He gave a statement to a court the following day and has since been released. Just before her death, the couple filmed a video to prove that his wife, racked with pain, decided she could no longer face her suffering. The 61-year-old had spent the last three decades fighting multiple sclerosis, and had reached the terminal stage of her illness. In the video, Hernández, asks his wife: “Do you still want to kill yourself?” She nods and replies: “Yes,” adding: “The sooner the better.” María had lost the movement in her hands, so Hernández then passes a cup of water and a straw to see whether she is capable of swallowing. Moments later, he helps her swallow the lethal dose of sodium pentobarbital. Hernández’s lawyer, Olatz Alberdi, says the goal of the video was to show his wife’s “suffering and abandonment”. According to Alberdi, Hernández turned himself over to the police directly afterwards. “He always said

he was not going to do it covertly,” said the lawyer. “He wanted to shine a light on this issue.” After leaving the court, Hernández told news agency Europa Press: “I have declared everything I did for my wife, and now I am under investigation and being held responsible for her death. “The officials and police have been sympathetic to me, and have treated me very well. They have agreed with me, and told me so, outright.” María had been a legal secretary, and an active

Ex-criminal forced to cough up baggage fee

CONVICTED Irish criminal John Gilligan complained bitterly at Alicante airport when he was obliged to pay a €25 carry-on baggage fee. A witness told the Irish media that Gilligan, inset, was “less than pleased”, after staff at the Ryanair check-in desk noticed that his bag was too large for free handluggage. “It was basically like a big briefcase and he was asked to come up to the desk,” said the onlooker. “It was funny, really, because a lot of people in the queue would have known who he was. But

the staff were Spanish, and his name would have meant nothing to them.” Gilligan was released from prison in 2013 after serving 17 years of a 20-year sentence for trafficking cannabis resin. He is currently bailed, after trying to take a suitcase containing €23,000 on a flight from Belfast to Spain. “Gilligan was very put out, but he paid up,” added the onlooker. “Basically, he went off on one then, saying it was a scandal and a sham and, whatever this had to do with it, that Ireland was the most corrupt country on earth.”

woman, who enjoyed playing the piano and painting. But she was forced to give up these activities as her physical condition deteriorated. Their house was fitted with handrails, and walls and doors were torn down to adapt to her decreased mobility. Initially, she was put in a wheelchair, but then needed assisted lifting equipment. She was almost totally paralysed and had trouble seeing and hearing. The couple asked for help on various occasions, but were

just offered sedatives, which she rejected: “I don’t want to sleep… I want to die,” she said last October. Her husband said: “My wife had always asked me to help her kill herself, and, in the last four months, she asked constantly. He also called on the media to focus on those who have this problem, saying: “Lots of people are in the same situation, and we have to help them.” Hernández was released, without precautionary measures, by the Madrid judge in charge of the case, but he may be called to appear again in court during the legal investigation. According to pro-euthanasia association The Right to a Dignified Death (DMD), Hernández is the first person to have been arrested in Spain for helping a physicallydisabled person to die. He was detained by a homicide police unit in his home in the Moncloa-Aravaca area after calling emergency services. No euthanasia case has received this much media attention in Spain since 1988, when Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic from the northwestern region of Galicia,

ended his life with the help of a friend. The case has also hit the political stage, the governing Socialist Party (PSOE) blaming the centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens) party and rightwing Popular Party (PP) for blocking legislation that aims to decriminalise euthanasia. “They are the ones responsible for stopping a much-needed law, that has the support of the majority of Spanish society, from moving forward,” said PSOE deputy Jesús María Fernández. Although the bill, forwarded by the PSOE, has the support of a parliamentary majority, it has been held up in the congressional standing committee, which is controlled by Ciudadanos and the PP parties. Ciudadanos has said it wants its law on palliative care to be approved before giving the final green light to the bill. “It doesn’t make a lot of sense to talk about euthanasia without first talking about palliative care,” said Ciudadanos Secretary General José Manuel Villegas. Meanwhile, the PP has, unequivocally, stated that it is “against euthanasia”.

shortly after her arrival. The adult driving the tractor was taken to the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital by road ambulance, and his condition was said to be “serious”.

Toddler dies in tractor disaster A GIRL aged three died tragically, and an adult was seriously injured, after the tractor on which they were riding overturned last Sunday.

The incident happened in the Cantabria region of Collado de Cieza, according to the emergency control centre, when the vehicle left a farm’s concrete track and plunged down a 15-metre embankment. Nick’s Benidorm mystery solved on his return home

A FAMILY in the UK have told of their joy, after being reunited with Nick Brzezicki, who went missing during a holiday to Benidorm. The 32-year-old’s disappearance, after an alleged incident in the Costa Blanca resort, sparked a huge socialmedia campaign to find the Weston-super-Mare man. Nick, inset, was on a short break to Benidorm with a friend, staying at the Sandos Benidorm Suites in the resort. However, he was arrested by Spanish police and appeared in court last Wednesday after the “incident”. He was last seen at around 11.30am, when he left the court.

His wife, Laura, had flown to Benidorm to try to find him, but her search was fruitless and she flew back to the UK. It is now understood that after leaving court, Nick attempted to walk the 50 kilometres from Benidorm to Alicante Airport. But he collapsed on the way and was picked up by Red Cross medics. He finally contacted his mother and his family, and organised a flight back to Bristol last Saturday. He was said to have been met by police on arrival, because he had been flagged as a missing person. Laura said: “I am so glad he is home, and safe. He has quite a few bruises, has lost a lot of weight, and is upset about what has happened. We are all over the moon to have him back safe.”

FOR the first time since before the 2008 financial crisis, annual house sales in Spain have broken the halfmillion barrier.

Latest figures show a 10.1% hike in residential property changing hands in 2018, and, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), a total of 515,051 homes were sold last year. The boost was attributed to a combination of economic growth, financial strength, improvements in the jobs market, and residential property being much cheaper now than just before the “bubble” burst in 2008. Data by INE shows that last year saw the market beginning to plateau, with the most moderate rise in purchase growth since 2014. That’s the year when the number of transactions rose by just 2%, compared with 11.5% the following year, 14% in 2016, and 15.4% in 2017. But sales numbers at the end of last year were their highest in a decade, and both newbuilds and second-hand homes were behind the annual growth, according to the INE. This fifth year of increases in home sales numbers is in stark contrast with the worst years of the financial crisis, 2008 and 2009, when property purchases plunged by 25.1%

Property sales are making big mark, after crisis years

and 28.8% respectively. In 2011 and 2012, sales were still falling in double-figure percentages, at 18.1% and 11.5%, then an end to tax breaks on buying main residences saw a reduction of 1.9% in 2013. From then on, however, growth has been consistent. In 2018, a total of 422,531 second-hand homes, and 92,520 new-builds were sold, the first being the highest number since 2007 and the second being the best since 2014. The greatest number of property sales in 2018 per 100,000 inhabitants was in the eastern region of the Comunidad Valenciana, which comprises the three

provinces of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón on the Mediterranean coast, with 2,010 homes per 100,000 residents shifted. This means that one of Spain’s most populous and popular regions was streets ahead of the rest of the country, given that the second-highest number of transactions per 100,000 residents, in the Balearic Islands, was 1,641. Andalucía was third, with 1,537 sales per 100,000, and, in terms of overall numbers, Andalucía, with 101,330, accounted for the most properties sold, followed by Catalunya, with 81,020, the Comunidad Valenciana with 78,800 and Madrid with 75,845.

Such hard times!

Cats Welfare News

CATS Welfare Tenerife was started over 10 years ago, and has grown, immensely, over the years. We neuter around 800 cats, annually, and re-home a similar number.

Over 70 amazing, dedicated volunteers work, tirelessly, to keep the charity going. We have a great team of ladies who work in the shop, devoted foster carers who constantly need supplies, trappers, cat taxis, donation collectors, food deliverers and colony feeders. We supply food for 24 colonies. One of our volunteers, Linda, handles phone calls, emails and Facebook messages, totalling over 100 a day, as well as undertaking numerous other tasks. But we are in dire straits. We owe our two main vets a total of over €14,000, and, each month, the amount goes up. Our main source of funds comes from our small charity shop, on San Blas, Golf del Sur. Recently, we have taken 13 pregnant cats to the vets, as well as a cat with a broken leg, a cat attacked by a dog, a cat who needed to

go to the eye hospital in the North, several with Calcivirus, some with eyes that needed removing, others with viruses and tumours, and one cat covered in maggots. And on it goes. All adult cats are tested for leukaemia and AIDS, wormed, deflead and injected. If they are abandoned pets, we try to home them, and we have them microchipped. All this is costing more money than we are raising. Our vets have been wonderful.

We constantly receive calls from people saying they have no money, and asking for help. It is, mainly, Spanish people with pregnant cats, or people leaving the island, wanting to drop their cat off with us. We don’t have a sanctuary. We can’t afford one. All our cats and kittens are kept in the loving homes of our foster carers. If we end up closing there will be immense suffering on the island. We seem to be the main cat charity that people

contact. They either get in touch with us first, or another charity has directed them to us. We are not the RSPCA. We are a small, independent charity which receives no official help. So we need your

help – desperately. If you would like to donate, please go to our online fundraising page www. gofundme.com/cats-welfaretrap-neuter-return-re-homingetc Alternatively, cash donations can be taken to our shop, or payments made via PayPal (info@cats-welfare-tenerife. com) Thank you so much. Our shop needs you! We’re looking for people who would like to work in our charity shop. Shifts are from 10am-2pm and 2-6pm, and you will never work alone. The air-conditioned shop has a lovely atmosphere, and tea, coffee, and a fridge full of goodies are provided. They’re all there to be enjoyed, while in the company of our friendly volunteers, and very valued customers! If you are interested, contact us on Facebook, ring/ WhatsApp Sharon on 662 524 006, or pop into the shop for more information. Even if you can only spare a few hours a week, that’s fine!

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Peter back with a belter By John Zammit

TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by The Duke Shops, Costa Adeje, is a fun competition, open to anyone over the age of 13, who complies with the terms, conditions and rules, which are posted on www.oasisfm.com.

The prizes available for the winner of the 2019 competition are 1,000 euros in cash, and a singing appearance at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards. The fifth heat took place at Marguy’s Bar & Restaurant, in Los Cristianos, which is a new venue for the competition. Just like all the other heats so far this year, there were hardly any empty seats. Again, a variety of songs were performed throughout the night, yet, as before, there was not an Adele or Ed Sheeran song to be heard! Kerry Railton, Tenerife Loves Karaoke host for the night, got proceedings underway

with the crowd-pleasing Mustang Sally, which set the night’s tone. This was followed by Peter, a finalist a few years back, singing an Andrew Lloyd Webber number, Music of the Night, which earned him a standing ovation. We then we heard a great version of My Way, followed by Dave, with Jim Croce’s Bad Bad Leroy Brown, and he really did bring the house down. Mumford & Sons I Will Wait

followed, and taking us up to the break was Bill, with what seems to be a popular choice this year: Roy Orbison’s Penny Arcade. After the interval, in which we saw one of the judges perform, the second half got underway with The Wurzels’ toe-tapper, I Am a Cider Drinker, followed by Todd, with Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode. Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline came next, and then Guido, with an Elvis

classic, It’s Now or Never. Another brilliant performance of Sam Cooke’s Bring It Home To Me was next, and Colette wrapped up the first half with the vintage Jerry Lee Lewis number, Great Balls of Fire. A short break was taken while the judges confirmed who would be heading for the semi-final, with Peter and Colette going through. Peter was up first, performing Luciano Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma, while Colette opted for The Corrs’ Breathless. And

what a sing-off we were treated to. Everyone performed brilliantly on the night, giving the Marguy’s Bar & Restaurant a funfilled night of entertainment. However, it is a competition and it was confirmed that Peter had won Heat 5, and Colette collected the runnerup spot, with both going through to the semi-finals. They each received their heat trophies. Many congratulations to both singers, for putting on such a fine show. We would like to thank everyone who entered this heat at Marguy’s Bar & Restaurant, as well as the owners and staff, who made this another memorable heat. The next Tenerife Loves Karaoke heat is next Wednesday (17th April) at The Rockin Horse, in Amarilla Golf. If you would like to enter this heat, and be in with a chance to win 1,000 euros and perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, call 822 141 517, or register, directly, at the venue. And don’t forget - you have to be in it to win it!

A FEW weeks ago, we introduced you to one of our Podencos, Esperanza, and now we would like you to meet another. Say hello to Chacho! Chacho was brought to us, a few months ago, but this is not his first time at K9. He came to the refuge as a puppy, along with his brothers and sisters. Thankfully, they were all adopted by owners offering happy, loving homes, and all are doing well. Unfortunately for Chacho, some unexpected family circumstances meant that a new home needed to be found for him. The previous owners tried their best to find him another loving home, but had no luck. Sadly, Chacho had to return to K9. He is not a shy boy, and shares his kennel with Erwin and Nepo, who have also featured here, and are both still looking for their forever homes. Chacho really enjoys playing with them, and loves to get out for a play and a long run. He particularly enjoys playing tug-o-war with one our many toys we have at K9. Chacho is quite anxious here, being surrounded by so many

different dogs, and it can be a bit stressful for him. When he is outside with his playmates, he is more relaxed, and enjoys being taken out for his walk every day. Being a Podenco, he has a lot of energy, so would need a place to burn off some of the excess! Like most dogs, Chacho can get along with some males and females, but there are some that he may not like. Because he currently shares with two chilled-out males, this also helps him to stay more relaxed. He did come from a home, so has known a home environment, which is where he is most comfortable. One of Chacho’s lovable features are his ears! When he is playing or running around, his ears are right up. They are so noticeable, you cannot help but smile! He does have an affectionate side, which we do not see much of in the kennels because he is stressed. Once he is outside, it does shine through a bit more. He is looking for his second chance. Such a grapefruit! NAMED for the way the fruit hangs in bunches (like grapes), the grapefruit is a nutritious member of the citrus family. It comes from sunny Barbados, and is thought to be the result of the natural crosspollenisation between the orange and the Asian pomelo.

Today the greatest quantity of grapefruit is produced by the United States, followed by China and South Africa. There are several health benefits of grapefruit that may make you want to include it in your diet, on a regular basis. Rich in Vitamin C Being a member of the citrus family, grapefruit is also a great source of Vitamin C, the great immune-system supporter. Many studies have indicated that it relieves the severity of cold

symptoms. As a powerful antioxidant, Vitamin C protects our bodies against oxidative stress caused by free radical damage, and the inflammation associated with asthma and arthritis. Oxidative stress can also cause a number of other severe medical conditions, such as heart disease and stroke, and has been connected to a host of cancers, such as mouth, throat, lung, stomach and colon. Vitamin C also helps to replenish the amount

of Vitamin E in the body. Prevents kidney stones Grapefruit contains a compound called d-limonene that prevents the formation of, and dissolves, renal stones. Women drinking about half a litre of grapefruit juice every day lowered the pH levels of their urine, thereby decreasing the risk of developing kidney stones. However, if you are already being treated for kidney problems, grapefruit juice may impede the effectiveness of any medications you may be taking. Cancer prevention Grapefruit is rich in antioxidants such as Vitamin C, a powerful ally in the fight against free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is associated with many different types of cancer. Studies have shown grapefruit juice to be effective against lung cancer by impeding an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals. In colon cancer it encourages the suicide

(apoptosis) of cancer cells, and the production of healthy cells. A compound in grapefruit called naringenin can be effective against prostate cancer, too, as it helps repair damaged DNA in human prostate cells. Lycopene is a carotenoid that gives grapefruit its red colour, and is another antioxidant in its arsenal. A group of phytonutrients in grapefruit called limonoids help prevent tumours, by promoting an enzyme that causes the liver to expel more toxins from the body. Many studies have also shown that limonoids aid against cancers of the mouth, skin, lung, and stomach. The pulp of grapefruit contains glucarates, a type of phytochemical that has been shown to be effective against breast cancer. However, grapefruit can interact with some common medications, altering their effects on your body. Always check before eating this fruit.

Spring clean your health!

By Val Sainsbury WITH longer days ahead, and warmer temperatures, now is a good time to do the following:

Head outdoors Take advantage of the (mostly!) lovely weather in Tenerife, and head outside for a walk or bike ride, or just to soak up some of our wonderful sunshine. Work up a sweat Schedule your workouts in advance, so there’s no excuse for not fitting them into your day. Eat colourful fruits and veggies Comfort foods are very tempting, but try swapping some of that heavy food for lighter, more refreshing fruits and vegetables. Try eating asparagus, lettuce, beets, mangos, honeydew melon or strawberries.

Reorganise your cupboards Now is a good time to go through your food cupboards. This helps to free up some space, and can also help get your eating habits back on track. Foods with little nutritional value, like those filled with refined carbohydrates and added sugars, such as biscuits or

sweets, should be thrown out, or moved to the back. Rearrange everything so that the healthy options like nuts and seeds and are the first thing you see when reaching for a snack. Up your water intake We all know water is very important for our health. We need water for many reasons.

Getting enough water helps prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs) by flushing bacteria out of our bodies. Staying hydrated helps prevent kidney stones, too. Let go of the tech Many of us believe technology makes our lives easier, but it can also clutter things up a bit. Create tech-free times. These

can be during dinner, before bedtime, or certain hours in the day. If your inbox is full of junk, organise your emails into folders, and unsubscribe from lists that deliver too many unwanted messages. Focus on sleep Your brain is busy restoring itself while you sleep, and your body is clearing itself of the chemicals it produces during the day, which allows you to wake up feeling alert and refreshed, rather than tired. Sleep also allows for tissue repair and muscle growth, which mostly, or only, occurs during this time. It allows your muscles to relax, which can help relieve tension, and reduce symptoms of certain types of chronic pain. Learn how to de-stress Learn how to let go of the stress in your life. You should be able to squeeze in a few moments each day, to inhale some fresh air. Try slowing your breathing down, and taking in more air to get more oxygen to your body. This will reduce stress levels, and increase the efficiency of your cardiovascular system.

Milk teeth could be life-savers, if you keep them! SPANISH dentists have confirmed that keeping hold of your milk teeth after they fall out could actually save your life later on.

Dr Óscar Castro Reino, chairman of the General Council of Dentists in Spain, responded to a study recently published in the US, saying: “It has been shown that the cavity in your first teeth contain blood vessels, nerves and also stem cells, which could be used to regenerate damaged tissue.” These stem cells are

preserved in the teeth, via the umbilical cord, and can be used in regenerative therapy for diabetes, cancer and heart attacks. And they are wellconserved because they have not been exposed to the same environmental damage as adult teeth, given that they fall out, usually between the ages of five and eight. Dr Castro says keeping them, rather than letting the tooth fairy have them, is “an investment in your future”. There are “Tooth banks” already operating worldwide, especially in the US, run by com-

panies who keep milk teeth preserved until they are needed. They have to be kept in optimum conditions, ideally frozen, in the same way as a woman’s eggs or a man’s

sperm are frozen, so they can have children later in life. Generally, only specialist medical companies are able to provide the right conditions so that the teeth can be used

in “20, 30 or 40 years, for therapeutic means,” says Dr Castro. At present, of course, keeping milk teeth in a condition that would allow them to be used for treating serious illnesses,

since retaining them in a jar at home does not keep them preserved properly, comes at a fee. But if studies in this area progress, and show that storing milk teeth is, indeed, a crucial medical exercise, Dr Castro says: “The State would need to get involved to ensure this treatment became universal, and available to everyone. “Otherwise, we would end up with a social class divide, with only the wealthy being able to afford treatment.” The first milk-teeth bank in Spain, Dencells Biomedical Institute, charges nearly €2,500 to collect, analyse the viability of, and preserve teeth for up to 25 years, with an additional fee to keep them “on ice” for longer. “In the case of patients with a family history of genetic-related illnesses, it would make sense to make this investment in their future,” agrees Dr Castro. “But thinking 30 or so years ahead is not easy.” Interestingly, children in Spain do not leave their teeth under the pillow for the tooth fairy, but for a “tooth mouse”: they are collected by El Ratoncito Pérez (“Pérez, the Little Mouse”).

Better, but not good enough!

CD Tenerife

IN-FORM Sporting Gijon came to the Heliodoro last Friday, but on this occasion, Tenerife were the better of the two sides, and the best team lost.

The home side had more possession and created more chances, but the two things letting them down all season came back to haunt them: failing to convert chances to goals, and bad defending against set-pieces. Tenerife came out of the blocks quickly and dominated the first halfhour. Early efforts, from a close-range Suso shot and a curling Lasso rightfooter in the 5th and 6th minutes, forced good saves from Gijon goalkeeper Mariño. A Naranjo shot in the 19th minute should have seen Tenerife leading, and defender Peybernes rescued his team with a clearance from Malbasic in the 25th minute, with his keeper beaten. As in previous games, Tenerife were lacking the final good pass or precise control to take charge. And when a good finish by Malbasic after 34 minutes hit team-mate Racic, it led to Gijon’s first real attack, and a corner. A good corner-kick found Djurdjevic on the penalty spot, but his contact wasn’t that great. Traver tried to head home, but a good save from Dani Hernandez ballooned the ball up into the box, where Serbian striker Djurdjevic challenged Mauro and bundled it home to give Sporting the lead. The CDT players complained of handball by Djurdjevic, which VAR would probably have confirmed, but the referee gave the goal, and the lead, to the away team after 37 minutes. Yet it was clear, coming out for the second half,

CD Tenerife 0 Sporting Gijon 1 that Tenerife were not affected by this setback, and they battled courageously. But Dani had to make a couple of important stops to prevent Gijon going further ahead, particularly from the Serbian again, after Alegría took advantage of a Milla slip. Suso then had a good chance to equalise on the hour mark, only to find the side-netting. The game’s last action saw Tenerife’s best chance, with an open header from Malbasic, but Mariño was able to scramble to his left and keep it out. At the final whistle, it was definitely points lost for Tenerife against a team who maintained their good run and are now eighth in the league. Tenerife, who have nine games left, remain in 17th position, with some tricky matches to come, and all “six-pointers”. They start

with an away trip to Rayo Majadahonda, in the Madrid region, tomorrow

(Saturday) evening. Rayo have also had an up-and-down season, and

Tenerife, to be safe, need more goals, and better defence... simple!

McIlroy meditates way to new future RORY McIlroy, back to his golfing best, is hoping a regime of meditation, juggling and mind-training will help win a first Masters title at Augusta. It is reckoned to be the finest tournament of all, and the 29-year-old, from Northern Ireland, has a new attitude to life, which has helped him start the year with seven top-10 finishes, along with victory in the Players Championship. “I don’t think I’ve ever started a season this well,” said McIlroy, who needs to secure the Masters to complete a career Grand

Slam of major titles. “It’s focusing on the small things and not living or dying by the results.” McIlroy has won The Open, US Open and US PGA Championship (twice), and he will become the sixth man in history to have won all four majors if he is successful at Augusta National. His last victory in a Major was in 2014, but he added: “A change of attitude has been one of the biggest keys to how I’ve played for the first few months of the year. It’s about not getting caught up trying to play

perfect golf.” He teed off alongside American Rickie Fowler at 4.15pm yesterday (Thursday). Meditation has played its part, but McIlroy is keen to point out it’s not going to take over his life. “I’m not going to go live with the monks for a couple of months in Nepal,” he said, with a smile. “I meditated for 20 minutes on the Sunday morning of the Players’ Championship. My routine now consists of meditation, juggling and mind-training… doing all the stuff to get you in the right place.”

Athletics

Boat-race winner Adriana is super, all-round athlete A MADRID-BORN PhD student in Computational Neuroscience was part of the winning crew at last Sunday’s Oxford and Cambridge boat race.

Adriana Pérez, described as a “genius”, who is the daughter of scientist parents, was schooled at the Lycée Française, representing them in the 2012 Mathematics Olympics. She graduated in maths and physics from America’s University of Columbia, and her glowing academic CV gave her the

option of choosing between the UK’s two most-prestigious, higher-education centres, to research her doctoral thesis. Both offered her a full scholarship, and she opted

rower, good enough to be selected for the first eight, and to help her fellow oarswomen to their third victory on the trot in the gruelling race. Cambridge women beat

Oxford women, taking their overall tally to 44-30, and Adriana has become the first Spaniard ever to row to victory in the celebrated Putney-to-Mortlake race. For the second year running, Cambridge beat Oxford in the men’s race, taking their overall tally to 84-80 - which was hardly surprising, given that the winners of the 165th boat race had one of the UK’s best-ever racing rowers. James Cracknell won Olympic gold medals at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004, and, on top of those achievements, is now the oldest-ever competitor in Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race history, at the age of 46.

Costa’s costly mistake sees league door close

No need to guess who the antagonist is in the striped shirt

DIEGO Costa, once a fiery Chelsea striker and now with Atletico Madrid, is still every inch a flame-thrower.

But he will not be seen again in La Liga action this season, after being suspended for eight matches and fined, following a nasty altercation with the referee in a match against Barcelona. He was said to have insulted and grabbed referee Jesus Gil Manzano during his side’s defeat by runaway league leaders Barcelona.

The feisty frontman saw red just 28 minutes into the league fixture at the Nou Camp on 6th April. Believing he had been fouled, the Spain international launched into a furious tirade at the match officials. He was shown a straight red card and had to be ushered from the field by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, after refusing to walk at first. Referee Manzano revealed in his match report that Costa had said to him: “I sh** on your wh*** mother.” Costa, never far from trouble when playing football, also

grabbed the referee’s arm during an angry confrontation. The Spanish Football Federation met on Wednesday to discuss what punishment to hand out, and they determined that he must sit out eight matches. He has been handed two fourgame bans: one for insulting a match official and another after gripping Manzano’s arm in an attempt to prevent him from showing yellow cards to Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez. And, as Atletico only have eight more matches to play this season, Costa might just as well start packing his holiday gear.
