Amy’s death may not have been accidental

AMY Louise Gerard, the British woman who went missing on 30th November last year and was then found dead, tragically, off the Puerto de la Cruz coast four days later, is now believed to be another victim of domestic violence.

La Orotava Court, responsible for cases against gender violence, lifted the judicial secrecy on Wednesday. Mystery has surrounding the death of the 28-year-old Loro Parque animal trainer, since the discovery of her lifeless body, on 4th December, off the Puerto de la Cruz coast. Investigations carried out by the National Police have confirmed the indications of a criminal offence, concerning her boyfriend, said to be the last person to see Amy alive on the 30th November. Sources close to her family say she was married to a Briton, who lives in the UK, but

they had separated. Amy was starting a new life here in Tenerife, and was in a relationship with a foreign resident, living in the north of Tenerife. That man has been summoned by the investigation team to testify over the coming weeks, because of his possible connection with Amy’s death. The team say she could have been pushed into the sea while walking close to the edge of the promenade. At the start of the police probe, witnesses claimed that Amy was in the Molly Malone Irish bar the evening she disappeared, having a knees-up with her boyfriend and other pals. It was also reported that she had left the pub with her partner, but, for unknown reasons, they headed in opposite directions. Early forensic reports indicated that there were no signs of violence, resulting in Amy’s death, and that it was probably an accident. But the autopsy told another story, showing signs of violence on Amy’s body.

Speedy boats must be banned, say lawyers Continued from Front The huge, eight-metre-long mammal was spotted last Friday, showing obvious signs of its injuries. It was dragged on to the shore at the La Jaquita beach, where it was seen by fascinated beachgoers. Unfortunately, though, the lifeless mammal had to be retrieved from the shore-line and carried away. Only a few weeks ago, specialised Tenerife lawyers presented reports relating to the frequent occurrence of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, turtles, etc.) becoming victims of accidents, involving fast ferries in Canarian waters. These reports have since been presented to the prosecutor’s court. According to lawyer Alejandro Quintana, there is an “alarming spike of cetaceans dying in Canarian waters, and this is a concern that cannot be ignored”. The University of La Laguna has been working closely with the University of St Andrews (Scotland) and Aarhus (Denmark) on this issue. Together, in Canarian waters close to Guia de Isora, they have discovered an important colony of pilot and bottlenose whales, as well as sperm whales with their offspring. Plans have been presented for a new port in Fonsalia, in the Guia de Isora area, which would lead to more sea traffic, and, thus, a significant increase of collisions between these sensitive mammals and large boats/ferries etc. Throughout the study, the observers not only picked up on the pod and their young, but also took part in a study about how the whales behave in their natural environment.

This study also highlights how the whales need to rest on the surface to restore energy levels, after diving as deep as one kilometre to catch their prey. Experts believe that this is why they cannot react quickly enough to avoid collisions. This year, two whales were registered dead, because of their significant injuries, sustained by the propellers of medium-sized boats. It is essential that recreational boats, as well as commercial, whale-watching vessels, respect the current regulations, which do not allow two boats at any one time to be within 300 metres of these animals. Many species, from dolphins to the largest cetaceans, such as sperm whales and rorquals, which include the blue whale, acknowledged as the largest animal ever on the planet, have been spotted during a study in Teno Rasca. The Teno-Rasca marine strip covers the municipal coasts of Buenavista del Norte, Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Adeje and Arona. This space, since September 2011, has been a Special Conservation Zone (ZEC),

contained in the Natura 2000 Network. And a campaign is well on the way to protect the TenoRasca waters, to safeguard its population of whales and turtles. These waters, it is hoped, will ensure the long-term survival of the most threatened species and natural habitats in Europe, helping to stop the loss of conservation, caused by human activities. But the need to establish practical speed reductions is a must in the Teno-Rasca area, specifically, to conserve the enormous wealth, living in its Special Conservation Zone. Coastal constructions in the area, it is said, must also be avoided to avoid inevitable collisions with whales and turtles.

COSTA Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA) recently hosted an event, at which Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga gave recognition to a number of private companies, which have partnered the Council in helping special-needs’ individuals find work.

The scheme is called ALAS (Acompañamiento Labarol para el Avance Social/ work partnering for social advancement), and the “alas” word also means wings. For their participation in the scheme, The Mare Nostrum Resort; Limpiezas Domínguez; Hotel Suites Villa María, and H10 Costa Adeje Palace, along with Hard Rock Café Tenerife, were rewarded with recognitions for companies and individuals, who have worked to make a real difference. Also present were representatives of nine new teams, about to embark on a work programme, adapted for the needs of individuals with special needs. Mayor Fraga said: “There is a lot of inequality in our society, and we have to redress the balance where were can, to give those with special needs the help they require. “This is something we have to continue to improve upon and change, and this is why

implementing the measure, from now on. However, on-the-spot checks will not be allowed, and searches will only be possible through a court order. According to Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, using a phone while driving increases the chance of being involved in an accident by 20% and reduces a driver’s perception of road signs by up to 40%. Phone companies will now be obliged by law to provide all the relevant digital information to a court if requested, so there is little point in drivers involved in a road accident to delete any potential proof of wrong-

doing from their devices. According to Spanish traffic sources, the mobile-phone checks will be carried out in cases where the cause of the road accident is unclear, although it doesn’t have to be a serious crash for a court to request the information. If the driver is found to be using his/her phone at the time of the crash, it will not be deemed by judges to be the only reason for the incident, but, rather, added to the list of conditioning factors. Using a mobile phone while driving in Spain is currently punishable with three points docked off drivers’ licences, and a €200 fine. Spain’s road authorities are now looking to wage war on mobile apps that warn drivers about speed cameras, police road-blocks and alcohol/ drugs checks. Their hope is that legislation is passed as soon as possible, to ensure that these mobile services are illegal.

on a “work with assistance” principle, was introduced to the borough by the department for diversity in 2013. Its main aim is to offer individuals with special needs the opportunity to improve their quality of life, by seeking employment in the best possible conditions for their inclusion in the world of work. A team of professionals, engaged in the project, will accompany the new employees when and where needed, offering those individuals the right to seek “ordinary” work, and more independence. New employees will have their “wing” assistants with them until they can fly solo. And, thanks to the scheme’s private companies involved, and their confidence in its operation and end goal, it is working for both individuals and their families. From now on, police will be able to carry out checks on the mobile phones of drivers involved in crashes, in order to determine whether they were using the device at the time of the crash, and whether it could have had an influence in causing the incident. This will include all forms of mobile communication, including texts, calls or voice messages on WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, or any other social platform. SPANISH police have arrested two ambulance drivers, charging them with four sexual abuse crimes against women patients they were transporting. They also face a robbery charge.

Guardia Civil officers claim they took advantage of the patients’ helplessness during the incidents, in Gran Canaria. Police arrested the two men,

Their victims were aged between 43 and 85, and, it is alleged, “suffered touching of a sexual nature in their intimate areas, along with other acts of humiliation”. It is also claimed that one of the victims was also robbed of a watch and €10. The two men, who have worked together for nine years, are set to face the courts in Las Palmas.

Hotel cleaner, who really did clean up

Rubbish-bin blaze seemed suspicious LOCAL police have opened an investigation after being called out on Sunday night, along with a fire-fighting team, to Calle San Nicholas, in the Santa Cruz area of San Matias, where two rubbish containers were on fire.

The blaze led to a parked vehicle next to the containers

being burnt out, and the car was a write-off. The fire-fighters, along with the police officers, want to discover whether the fire was started intentionally. Two women, aged 40 and 56, in the vicinity at the time, were treated by a team of professionals, before being taken to a nearby medical centre, because they both had panic attacks. Officers believe the attacks were probably bought on because of the extent of the fire.

ARONA’S National Police have arrested and charged a 49-year-old woman with committing several robberies in hotels around the municipality. Several reports had been made to the police, regarding previous hotel robberies, and three took

Police drug seizure led to euros as well

A 37-YEAR-OLD man was arrested in the Tenerife capital of Santa Cruz, carrying 1,570gm of hashish, 4gm of cocaine and €2,530 euros in cash.

The man, who already has a police record for similar offences, was arrested and charged with drugdealing and trafficking. The arrest took place in the residential area of Ofra, after the police, from one of their surveillance cameras, had halted a suspicious vehicle circulating the area, to identify the driver. As the police were talking to him, they spotted a slab of hashish

under the handbrake, and chose to complete a more thorough search of the vehicle. Officers removed the handbrake’s outer covering and found 50 smaller slabs of hashish, as well as several wraps of cocaine, already prepared for a quick sale. To their surprise, the officers also found a wad of cash hidden alongside the drugs. They believe that this area is a popular spot, frequented by people buying recreational drugs. But the police are happy with their intervention, and they believe that this point of sale is now closed. The detainee, along with the police report, has been presented to the judicial authorities.

place on the same premises. The clients making those official reports stated that they’d had money and personal items taken from their rooms. The officers, thanks to their investigations, were able to pin-point the culprit, who was a cleaner for the hotel group. And, coincidentally, she was always working at the time of the robberies. The woman, a local resident

with a colourful, unlawful past, took advantage of her position by gaining access into the guests’ rooms while they were off the premises. She would then help herself to cash, and anything else that took her fancy. True to form, she has a police record for similar crimes, and is now awaiting a meeting with the judicial authorities, who will also receive a National Police report.

NEWS IN BRIEF Palm Sunday pain for helper

A COSTALERO (float-carrier) was injured after being hit by a huge tree, which fell from a float during a Palm Sunday procession, in the south of Spain. The man suffered “slight” head and back injuries as the palm tree was being raised, during the opening of Cordoba’s Semana Santa (Easter Week). The Borriquita procession continued normally after it had been removed.

Madrid’s false bomb threat

SOME 2,000 workers were told on Tuesday afternoon that they could return to work, following an alleged bomb threat to a Madrid skyscraper. According to ABC, the supposed threat against the Australian Embassy, inside the Torrespacio tower, was a false alarm. Sources said the threat might have been caused by a fire alarm being triggered. Police, who are remaining on site, are investigating the events, after carrying out a search for explosives with sniffer dogs. The building, which also houses the British, Canadian and Dutch embassies, is one of the four towers of the Paseo de la Castellana.

Teenager hit by propeller

A TEENAGER injured a leg badly after being struck by the propeller of a small boat, while out at sea on Sunday afternoon. The emergency services were informed by a caller at around 5pm that a 15-year-old boy had been injured after suffering an accident while out at sea, on a private, recreational boat. The caller also told the operator that they were on their way back to the marina, situated in the Guimar municipality, and that the youngster needed medical assistance. An ambulance was dispatched to the location, along with the Guardia Civil, and, once they had arrived, the medical team examined the boy, and treated the deep wound. He was made comfortable before being taken to Candelaria Hospital.

Youngster bruised in roof fall

A BOY aged 14 was seriously injured on Sunday after falling through a factory roof in the Guimar area, at around midday, near the TF-61 picnic area. An ambulance and fire-engine crew were sent to the scene, as well as the police, and the fire-fighters had to use special chains to get into the building. Once inside, police medics were able to examine the teenager, who had suffered severe bruising, both internal and external. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment.

Date-rape drug leaves Irishman totally destitute AN Irishman has warned tourists heading for Tenerife to be on their guard, after he was sprayed with a date-rape drug and forced to empty his bank accounts.

David Nelson, 27, was on holiday with friends in March, and is anxious to share his “horrible experience”, to help raise awareness of a dangerous drug, known as “Devil’s Breath”. Mr Nelson, an engineer from Bray, Co Wicklow, who works in Switzerland and was staying in Adeje, went out for drinks in Las Americas on 23rd March. At the end of the night, he lost touch with the group and went to get a taxi back to his apartment. But he was approached by a woman, who, he said, tried to seduce him. But when he pushed her away, he was “sprayed in the face with a substance”.

He told the Irish Independent newspaper: “I was later informed by police that it was the date-rape drug Devil’s Breath. “I remember very few things after being sprayed. My phone disappeared, plus my gold watch, bracelet, and €600 from my wallet. “I was then taken to an ATM, and the girl proceeded to take what money she could from my Irish and Swiss bank accounts, until the cards declined. This drug turns you into a zombie.” The police report described the woman as being aged between 20 and 30, with curly hair, and the Irishman said he’d been told by an officer that tourists were attacked regularly with the scopolamine drug. The substance, blamed for thousands of crimes in South America, has now become a problem in European countries. The US Overseas Security Advisory Council has issued several warnings about the

drug, which, it says, “can disorientate the victim and cause prolonged unconsciousness and serious medical problems”. The Department of Foreign Affairs says that while it doesn’t comment on individual cases, it acknowledged that Spanish authorities have warned of date-rape drugs being used. Meanwhile, a candlelit vigil was held last weekend for another Irishman, who was reported missing in Tenerife during the same week that Mr Nelson was robbed. Father-of-two Peter Wilson, 32, was last seen on the island on 23rd March, the date when Mr Nelson was robbed. Mr Wilson travelled there from Dublin Airport on 22nd March and was staying at Costa Adeje’s Malibu Park hotel. His family and friends have appealed on social media for anyone who might have seen him to get in contact. Mr Wilson is believed to have been in the Costa Adeje and Las Americas areas.

Señora del Carmen church in Los Cristianos, followed by an offering of flowers. Later, on Sunday evening, the Muslim community, at their mosque, recited prayers, which continued into the night. Residents, neighbours and others who are always aware, will never let the following victims be forgotten: Flor González, a 71-year-old woman from Asturias; 55-year-old Antonio Jesús García Beltrán, from Tenerife; Noemí Ruiz Rodríguez, aged 29, from Galicia; Hanan Mrabet, a 41-year-old Moroccan national; Italian Graziella Fagnoli, aged 77; Alessandro Locatelli, another Italian, aged 41, and 72-year-

old Markku Tapinnen, from Finland. It took three heart-stopping days to recover the seven bodies and secure the area, and there was time for a small celebration, with the rescue of three people from the scene. More than 100 people were evacuated from the neighbouring building, for safety’s sake, and many individuals, from all walks of life, contributed to the emergency, clearing up the disaster area. It took around three months of hard work, as well as dedication, to remove the destructive mess, and those who rolled up their sleeves are also commended.

Prayers and flowers are offered for tragic seven A CHRISTIAN service, along with flowers as well as Muslim prayers said later, reminded many people last Sunday of the seven victims who died, tragically, three years ago, when an apartment block collapsed in Avenida Alyon, in Los Cristianos.

Drunken football fans are booted off a flight

AN entire group of football fans, totalling 25, were thrown off an airline at Alicante airport and arrested by Guardia Civil officers, because of their rowdy behaviour.

The Guardia, along with air-transport governing body AENA, confirmed the problem last Friday, but the incident actually happened the previous week, on Saturday, 6th April, when the plane, from Bristol, landed at 10.50pm. The British group of passengers, all said to be “very drunk and acting aggressively”, had become a nuisance to fellow travellers. Police boarded the aircraft when they were summoned by the pilot upon landing,

after he had reported a “public order issue”. Cabin crew had attempted to resolve the situation, but the football fans jeered at them and refused to pay heed. When they were arrested en masse, and ordered off the plane, the rest of the passengers whooped, cheered and clapped. Some airlines have banned alcohol on certain “problematic” routes because of similar incidents, which have even involved emergency landings to remove troublesome groups of passengers. Certain budget airlines have stopped serving alcohol on the Glasgow-Ibiza route, where at least two sudden landings have been made halfway, because of disorderly, onboard behaviour.

Violent convict harms trio of prison officers

AN inmate, renowned for being a violent trouble-maker in Lanzarote’s El Tahiche prison, assaulted three officers last Saturday.

Sources say the events unfolded when one of the officers tried to calm down a discussion, which was getting out of hand. Suddenly, the

inmate snapped the wooden handle from a brush and threatened the officers with it. The men, trained to handle this type of aggression, tried to defuse the situation, but the prisoner began to attack them physically, kicking them and throwing punches. They managed to restrain the inmate, before transferring him to solitary confinement. The trio of officers needed

treatment at the prison’s medical quarters, for injuries sustained during the attack. The prisoner, considered to be extremely dangerous, has accumulated yet another charge to add to the numerous, serious offences he already has to his name. He is well known for his violent ways with fellow inmates, as well as vandalising and destroying prison property.

Did Swede murder his wife?

A SWEDISH man, aged 45, has been detained in Gran Canaria in connection with the death of his wife, whose body was found at the couple’s Mogan apartment last Thursday. Spanish media reported that the Guardia Civil discovered the 42-year old dead woman, also Swedish, after her husband called the emergency services. Reports suggest that the body showed signs of being beaten, and, last Saturday, a court ruled that her husband should be held in custody.

Bomb on finca was totally safe

NATIONAL Police were called to a farmhouse in the Andalucia area of Antequera, where an unexploded bomb had been found by the owner. He had discovered a shell, half-buried in the finca’s courtyard, and police cordoned off the area around it, before a specialist bomb squad arrived. They identified it as a howitzer from the Civil War era, and the experts decided the bomb was in an “inert state”, and no longer contained an explosive charge. The bomb, found in a small town called La Joya, has now been removed.

Adeje will again witness the Greatest Story Ever ADEJE Council, as has been the norm every Good Friday for several years, today stages its magnificent version of “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” depicting the last days and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The Council, under the direction of Cultural Department Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, presents “La Pasión”, from midday on the town’s main street, the Calle Grande. And, as ever, hundreds of spectators, some from all over the world, will witness this spectacular event live. The performance will also be broadcast on TV Canarias, as well as nationally on 13TV. And it will be streamed live on the Adeje Ayuntamiento Facebook page. In addition, Radio Sur Adeje (107.9FM) will be broadcasting live from the Plaza España throughout. “The Passion is one of the most eagerly-awaited, cultural events of the year in Adeje, with an important level of local participation from those who live here,” said Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. “This is very much their staging, and something they feel very committed to, year after year.” He added: “It is a council-run event, with a huge, personal investment from the Town Hall staff, with all those involved working to ensure everything is perfect, down to the last detail.” Every year, people come forward with new ideas and suggestions, each one adding to this singular, cultural occasion, which brings together huge crowds on to the streets, and is followed by millions on television and online.

This is the seventh year of the final scene, The Crucifixion, taking place in the Plaza de España. And the location change of this most emotive scene has added to the dramatic weight of the presentation’s final moments, with the incredible, natural backdrop of the Barranco del Infierno, flanked by the Convento and the Parish church. There is also much more space for the watching public, and it has also meant a general increase in safety. Councillor Ferrera said: “’La Pasión’ is a hugely-important event, from a cultural and tourist point of view, and the people of Adeje feel very much that it is ‘their’ contribution. This year, yet again, we have more than 300 people taking part in what is a unique event.” There are always some changes to the event, and, on this occasion, there will be a number of new stalls in the “Jerusalem marketplace”. The props on some of the other stages are new, and neither the serpent nor the eagle used in previous performances

will be taking part. Sergio Sosa, a student of the Municipal School of Music, will sing ‘No Encuentro Palabras’ and Adeje resident Carla Peraza will sing “Oye Mi Voz, Profeta”. And in the Garden of Gethsemane scene, there will be two new actors: one dressed completely in white, representing the will of God, and the other in black, representing evil. The Council is using a number of hashtags to increase visibility, via social networks, #pasionadeje2019, #semanasantaadeje2019, #easterweekadeje2019, for the public to use when they are uploading photos, videos and stories on to social media. The Council also extends its gratitude for the dedication and commitment of those who, year after year, work to make this an extremely special event. Adeje Council asks that those planning to attend the event observe the following recommendations: *Wear appropriate clothing and shoes, because comfort is important

*Apply high-factor suncreams, and make sure you have sufficient water *Make sure you have personal ID on you, including information regarding your blood group, and any allergies to medicines *Arrive in plenty of time to avoid delays *Don’t push while in the crowd *Respect the security signals and barriers in place, as well as following any instructions of the Security and Council personnel *Don’t climb up on walls, railings, flower pots, stages etc *In the event of an accident, find the nearest health assistant and ask him or her to help you find a family member or companion *In the case of an emergency, remain calm, respect those who are nearby, and leave the danger zone, following the directions of the security personnel. Don’t run or scream *When the event is over, wait a few minutes for the crowds to diminish before leaving the centre of town. Photo: Phil Crean

‘Lecherous’ builders wreck dream holiday

A FAMILY, who splashed out £3,000 on a dream, allinclusive holiday to Lanzarote, say it was ruined by builders, staring at their young girls, along with noisy cement-mixers near the pool. Julie Reeves, 42, and husband, David, travelled with their daughter Jessica, and Julie’s niece, Ria, to Playa Blanca on 1st April. They maintain that the builders, working on a construction near the swimming pool, spoiled it on the first day, and, they said, they were forced to spend the remaining days of their week-long break at the beach instead. Julie told the Mail Online: “We arrived to a construction site around the pool area, with pneumatic drills, cementmixers, electric saws and tilecutters. “Dust was flying over us, continually, and lecherous

workmen were constantly up and down with wheelbarrows. “The girls didn’t feel comfortable and said the workmen were staring at them, which made me feel sick. “We ended up spending every day at the beach after the first day, which was horrendous. It cost us a fortune.” Julie said they complained to TUI and said they were offered £250 compensation, or a £350 reduction on a future stay. But this was “an insult”, they told the travel company. A TUI spokesman said: “We’re sorry to hear of their experience in Lanzarote. We were not made aware of the planned building, so we were unable to notify the customers before they travelled, which we will be addressing with our hotel partner. “We will also be investigating other concerns the customers have raised. We will be in contact with the customers directly to apologise, and offer a gesture of goodwill.” The TUI holiday company have also been contacted

about another Tenerife hotel because a customer claimed she was refused a refund after discovering that the one she had booked was the scene of a sickness outbreak. According to the This Is Money website, Rachel Appleby became aware of a thread on TripAdvisor, two days before she was set to fly to Hotel Sensimar, in Los Gigantes, warning that many people had contracted a virus while staying there. She informed the website that TUI’s customer-care centre was unable to offer her a refund when she asked about cancelling or going to a different hotel. The holiday cost more than £1,000, leaving Rachel, potentially, losing a substantial sum of money. But the website contacted Tui, and Rachel said she had been offered a full refund! However, the website said other holiday-makers had reported falling ill when staying at the hotel Sensimar, and there had been many reports on social media about the problems.

Wealthy Polishman held after his bugging scandal POLISH millionaire Marek Falenta, instrumental in bringing down Donald Tusk’s government, has been arrested in Cullera, Valencia, because of a bugging scandal.

Police revealed afterwards that when they arrived at his luxury apartment, Falenta’s partners urged officers to enter immediately. “He realised that the police were there, and he was threatening to throw himself off the ninth-floor balcony,” they said. But the officers were able to persuade him not to jump, and then arrested him. He now awaits extradition. Poland’s Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski later

confirmed on Twitter that the man arrested in Cullera was Falenta, who had recorded 700 hours of conversations between senior politicians and businessmen. The 2014 bugging scandal rocked the Polish Government, after conversations were leaked to the media, with extracts that included then Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorsk describing David Cameron as an incompetent, who had “f***** up Europe”. Tusk resigned as Prime Minister that year and became European Council President, but his party lost the 2015 general elections, because of a fall-out from the scandal. Falenta fled Poland to avoid a 30-month sentence in 2016, although it is uncertain how long he had been living in Cullera.

Customs uncover cocaine stash

THE Guardia Civil, along with Customs officers, have combined to stop 18 kilos of cocaine being shipped from Huelva to Tenerife. An Italian man with Canarian residency, living in Tenerife, attempted to walk through the Customs control at Huelva’s south dock without checking in, which prompted officers to inspect his vehicle. They discovered a double floor in the car, and uncovered 14 packets of

cocaine, wrapped in a special material, and coated in a substance, to prevent them being detected by the sniffer dogs. Once the officers tested the substance, they confirmed that they had found the cocaine, with a street value of €20,000. The vehicle and drugs were seized by Customs, while the man, together with a police report, are in the hands of the judicial authorities.

Among the victims were much of the east and southeast and far north-west of England, The Netherlands, northern Belgium, central Europe, to the east of France and south-east of Germany, as far as Hungary, the Istanbul and Ankara areas of Turkey, patches of southern Portugal, Egypt, Singapore, the UAE, and parts of the US. The whole of Spain and Italy, except the south coast of the latter, were a complete social media blank from around 12.30pm mainland Spanish time (11.30 in the Canary Islands) until midafternoon. Connections started to reappear at around 3pm in some areas of Spain, but all the areas were not back online until nightfall. The Instagram news feed was not working, Facebook’s server was not responding, and it was not possible to log in, and WhatsApp users reported problems with sending and receiving messages. last worldwide failure of all three social media platforms occurred. They stopped working at 10pm mainland Spain time on 13th March, and remained out of action for the longest time in their history. Back then, Facebook, the

firm founded by Mark Zuckerberg, attributed the shutdown to a “change in server configuration”, and insisted it had nothing to do with a hack attack. As yet, the reason for Sunday’s breakdown is not known.

RESIDENTS in Andalucia are set to pay less income tax under new Junta laws, thanks to new President Juan Manuel Moreno, who plans to introduce the “fiscal revolution” this year.

Despite claims that a drop will impact social services, the Junta, as part of a threeyear plan, aims to lessen the tax burden on both the lowest and highest earners. “It is a massive drop in taxes,

and, as long as another government doesn’t repeal what we are doing, we will lower taxes every year, so that from 2019 to 2022, we have the same taxation as Madrid,” said Moreno. Workers in Madrid now pay between 9% and 21% income tax, depending on how much they earn. The lowest earners in Andalucia pay 10%, while people earning above €120,000 per year pay 25.5%. Moreno believes that reducing the gap would benefit families and attract investment.

Woman wears seven dresses to beat excess baggage ‘fine’

A SMART woman, who was told her carry-on luggage was three kilos too heavy for the aircraft cabin, avoided a £65 excess baggage penalty… by wearing the extra weight!

Fellow passengers, on Thomas Cook’s ManchesterFuerteventura flight, were astonished to see 30-year-old Natalie Wynn put on seven dresses, two pairs of shoes, two pairs of shorts, a skirt and a cardigan. The airline’s rules state that

adults are allowed to take one, free piece of handbaggage, weighing up to 6kg, on to the flight. True, the mum-of-five admitted she was “boiling” as she boarded the flight. But crew allowed her to remove the extra layers once onboard. A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: “Natalie’s ingenuity is noted! The good news for Natalie, and the rest of our customers, is that, later this month, we are increasing our hand-baggage allowance to 8kg. “This will, hopefully, help her travel a little less like Joey from Friends next time.”

Woman’s theft spree was helped by two youngsters

SANTA Cruz Local Police have arrested a 20-year-old woman, after she was caught stealing no fewer than 59 items of clothing from several stores across the Tenerife capital. The woman, accompanied on her robbing spree by two minors, aged 15 and 16,

hid the stolen garments in a baby’s pram, and, when arrested, the items she had added up to 819 euros. The police arrested and charged the woman with shop-lifting, after receiving a call from a Plaza de la Candelaria store, telling them they had detained three young women. The shop alarm had been triggered as they attempted to leave the building. The officers questioned

all three individuals, who confessed that they had been stealing all day, helping themselves to clothes from other establishments in the area. Parents of the two minors were notified, along with the child prosecutor’s office, and the police held them at their station until they were collected. The shop-lifting woman and the police report have been presented to the judicial authorities.

‘Little Red Riding Hood’ too sexist for children in schools’ infant libraries

Strawberry-pickers say authorities ignore abuse

TRAFFICKED Moroccan women have accused the authorities of ignoring widespread exploitation and abuse in the strawberry fields of southern Spain.

A BARCELONA school, run by Catalan regional government, has removed 200 children’s books from the infants’ library for perpetuating sexist stereotypes. Tàber School, reviewing its catalogue of library books for children up to the age of six, found that only 10% were written from a gender perspective. Some 30% of the stories were deemed “toxic”, while 60% had less-serious problems. Other schools are also working to fill their libraries with more gender-balanced books. Classic fairy tales, such as Sleeping Beauty and Little Red Riding Hood, are just two of the books removed from the catalogue, according to local TV station Betevé. But Anna Tutzó, one of the mothers on the commission which reviewed the books, said the initiative was not about targeting specific stories, but the broader problem of sexism, which goes far beyond fairy tales. Ms Tutzó added: “Gender bias also affects books for learning the alphabet, colours and habits. Society is changing and is more aware of the issue of gender, but this is not being reflected in stories.” The legend of Saint George has also been taken off the shelves of Tàber’s infants’ library. Books about him are read, commonly, at

Catalonia’s Sant Jordi bookgiving festival, the Diada de Sant Jordi (St George’s Day) on 23rd April. But most of them perpetuate sexist stereotypes, where a man is the courageous hero, slaughtering dragons, and a woman is the frightened princess. New children’s books, however, such as Santa Jordina (Saint Georgia) and La revolta de Santa Jordina (The revolt of Saint Georgina), are putting a twist on this legend and placing a girl in the hero’s role. The most common problem, said Ms Tutzó, was the association of masculinity, with values such as competitiveness and courage. “Also, in violent situations, even though they are just small pranks, it is the boy who acts against the girl,” she noted. “This sends a message about who can be violent, and against whom.” The concern over what children are reading has reached other schools in the Catalan capital. Barcelona’s Montseny School is also beginning to revise books in its library, announcing that it will remove stories believed to be sexist. Meanwhile, at Fort Pienc School, the Parents’ Association has created a genderequality commission to look at the content of children’s books, as well as other issues concerning sexism. “The type of books children read

is very important, because traditional books replicate gender stereotypes, and it is good to have books that break these,” said Estel Clusella, head of its Parents’ Association. Ms Clusella believes that it is important to challenge gender stereotypes as soon as possible. “At the age of five, children have already established gender roles,” she said. “They know what it is to be a boy or a girl, and what that means, so it is key to work with a gender perspective from the infancy stage.” The Tàber School commission is now planning to review the books given to primary-school students. But, said Ms Tutzò, it does not intend to take any off the shelves. “In early childhood, kids are like sponges and absorb everything around them, which allows sexist stereotypes to be normalised” she stressed. “But primary-school students, aged six to 12, have a greater ability to think critically, and the books can be an opportunity to learn, so that they themselves recognise the sexist elements.” Ester Murillo, a mother on the Montseny School Parents’ Association, added: “This awareness of sexist content needs to be shared by both the families and the teachers, who must internalise it and transmit it in the classroom.”

‘Samira Ahmad’ has been in hiding and living on handouts with the nine other Moroccan women, after they faced human-trafficking and sexual assault. Women make up a large percentage of the seasonal workforce in Andalucia, harvesting 400,000 tonnes of strawberries, destined for the UK, France and Germany. Samira, whose name has been changed, said: “Before I left my home, I was like a hero to everyone. Nobody in my village had ever had a chance to work in a rich country like Spain. But it has turned out to be the worst decision of my life.” Both the Moroccan and Spanish Governments have downplayed widespread reports of sexual and

physical abuse of seasonal workers, despite evidence that women are targeted deliberately. “Morocco women working as temporary workers in the fields have described to us the harsh working conditions they must endure, and the dehumanisation. “They are working in permanently-crouched positions, with a single break of 30 minutes a day, in temperatures of 40 degrees, under the plastic of the greenhouses,” said Alicia Navascues, of the women’s rights group Mujeres. The strawberry workers claimed to have been racially abused, denied food and forced to live in squalid, shipping containers, along with hundreds of other workers. Alicia said: “In Morocco, they are deliberately looking for those who are povertystricken and vulnerable to do this work; namely rural women with young children, who only understand Arabic. They cannot understand their contracts, written in Spanish, or claim their rights.”

Pilots halt Easter strike

A STRIKE by pilots in Spain, which has been called off following a last-minute deal, has avoided chaos for Easter travellers.

Air Nostrum pilots went back to work after a compromise was reached between the Spanish regional airline

and Sepla, the national pilots’ union. But technical difficulties mean that the hundreds of flights cancelled, ahead of expected walkouts, will remain so. The airline says that flights on 22nd-24th April will now operate as normal, which will be a relief to countless Spaniards, intending to fly during the Easter period.

Nice and kneesy does it for charity cyclist Carol AFTER four knee operations, a bulging disc and 30 years of excruciating back pain, 58-year-old British expat Carol Webb has completed a 320-kilometre, fundraising cycle ride.

Carol, who had lost two friends to cancer, pedalled from Miami Platja, Tarragona, down to Calpe, on the Costa Blanca, and celebrated her success with 11 close friends, and a cup of tea! Carol, originally from Waltham Abbey, Essex, completed her ambition at the tea house, called Tea for Two, raising €1,200 for the cancer department at Hospital Universitari Sant Joan de Reus. “My back was hurting all the time, but you tell yourself that there are probably 100 people who have died of cancer today, and you keep on going,” said Carol. “My legs are like rocks, but I feel so strong, as though I can do anything.” Her journey began on Sunday, 31st March, from Gino’s Miami Platja bar, and she rode around 60km each

day, finishing the following Saturday. Her mum, Ruby, kept in close contact by car, along with neighbour Pat Allworthy, and friend and sports massage therapist Julie Robinson, 61, who gave regular massages to ease Carol’s back. Carol revealed that Harley Street doctors had told her to get her vertebrae fused some 30 years ago. But she refused because the operation would have left her bed-ridden for six months, and with “less flexibility”. She added: “Julie waited with a blanket on the roadside for me every day. At one point, an ambulance stopped to ask if she needed help. But I

couldn’t have done it without her expertise.” Carol said she felt as though she had to act, after her circle of friends lost two members to cancer in the past year. “If Carol wants to do something, she will,” Julie told the Olive Press, adding that, seven years ago, Carol ran 26 kilometres to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, following her father’s death. She said Carol gets her adventurous spirit from mum Ruby, who gave up quad biking at the grand old age of 79, after rolling one on a mountain side. Carol’s next ambition is to cycle from London to Spain!

Cruise ‘rapist’ is free, after a legal loophole A TEENAGER, accused of raping a British girl on a Mediterranean cruise, has been released, thanks to a legal loophole.

The ship was set to dock at Valencia’s port, just hours after an alleged attack by the 18-year-old occurred. The victim, 17, who was travelling with her parents, reported the incident while onboard, saying she had been forced into her cabin, where the rape occurred. Port authorities alerted the National Police and the court in Valencia, where the

complaint was formalised. The girl was taken to the La Fe Hospital, where she was examined, and further DNA tests were carried out inside the cabin. However, the young man has since been freed because the Spanish Courts could not claim jurisdiction over the crime, as the alleged attacker had no residential address in the country. Also, the alleged crime occurred in international waters, on Panamanian territory. According to Spanish media, the judge has called on British, Italian and Panamanian authorities to investigate the allegations.

The new, UK tax year: What are the changes?

Personal tax The amount of UK income you can earn, tax-free, increases by £650 to £12,500. The threshold for the highest income-tax rate of 40% rises from £46,350 to £50,000 (different rates and bands apply in Scotland). Although previous governments have suggested removing personal-allowance benefits for non-resident British nationals, expatriates still qualify, today. However, this could potentially change, with a new, UK government. Savings and investments The band of UK savings

income that can be earned, tax-free, remains at £5,000, the annual ISA subscription limit stays at £20,000, and the dividend allowance stays at £2,000. Note that investments like ISAs lose their tax-efficient benefits once you are no longer UK resident. Take time to explore alternative taxefficient arrangements that may better suit your particular set of circumstances, goals and risk appetite. Pensions The annual allowance remains at £40,000. Meanwhile, the State Pension increases 2.6%, in line with inflation (as defined by the Consumer Price Index), representing an extra £169 a year for those who started drawing benefits before 6 April 2015; £221 for others. Despite ongoing Brexit uncertainty, expatriates, who are already settled in the EU, should continue receiving these cost-of-living increases, in future. The lifetime allowance (LTA) also increases with inflation

from £1.03 million to £1.055 million, allowing you to accrue an extra £25,000 in combined pension benefits, before 25% or 55% LTA tax penalties apply. Transfers to EU/EEA-based Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) remain tax-free for EU residents. However, following Brexit, it is possible the UK may widen its 25% overseas transfer charge, to include the EU/EEA. In any case, take regulated advice to establish the best pension solution for your individual circumstances and goals, before the rules potentially change. Inheritance tax An inheritance-tax review is underway, but, for now, the threshold remains frozen at £325,000 per person. With the lifetime gift allowance also unchanged, you can still pass on up to £3,000, taxfree. The residential nil rate band increases from £125,000 to £150,000 per person, providing

SPAIN’S Guardia Civil Tráfico department has been cracking down on motorists, using their mobile phones while driving during Holy Week. Eight drones, launched at the start of the week, are able to photograph offenders caught checking their device while at the wheel. The high-tech strategy is part of a crackdown on dangerous driving habits during a period in which 9.1m car journeys will take place across the country. There will be 400 extra Trafico

officers on the roads until Monday, complete with an additional 216 cameras and 264 camouflaged vehicles. And 10 helicopters will also join in the crackdown. The unmanned drones can fly up to 120 metres high, and can hone in on drivers up to 2km away. They are also able to report and record all types of infractions, including the use of mobile phones. There will also be a team of 30 pilots and 11 camera operators, looking out for offenders in real time, from

the DGT headquarters. Common infractions, such as using a mobile, or not wearing a seatbelt, are punishable by a €200 fine and a loss of three points on a driving licence. The action has been introduced because 31 people died and another 159 were seriously injured, during last year’s Holy Week. And the previous year, the mobile-phone distraction was the leading cause of fatal accidents on the road at 33%, ahead of speeding (29%) and alcohol (26%).

THE 2019/20 UK tax year ticked over on 6th April 2019. We explore changes that may affect expatriates, and what you can do to make the most of existing rules.

extra relief when passing a main UK home to direct descendants. The good news for expatriates is that overseas property qualifies, provided it is your main home. Capital gains tax The capital-gains tax exemption continues tracking inflation, increasing from £11,700 to £12,000 (£6,000 for most trusts). From 6th April, the sale of commercial UK property, owned by non-UK residents, becomes subject to nonresident, capital-gains tax (NRCGT), however it is owned. This brings most UK property and land owned by nonresidents into firing range for capital-gains tax. Property Buy-to-let tax relief continues to taper. Now, landlords can only deduct 25% of their mortgage interest repayments against rental income (compared with 50%, last year). In May, the government will conclude a consultation on an additional 1% stamp

duty for non-residents buying residential property in England and Northern Ireland, so there is a chance this will come into force, in the near future. While this new tax year brings relatively few changes, it is sensible to review whether you are making the most of all the available tax-efficient opportunities, in the UK and your country of residence. “If you don’t give a young person something to aim for - a focus, a drive, a determination, enjoyment, something to do, they will find their own focus. They will find their own group to belong to.” - Connie Henry, founder of Track Academy Set against increasing alarm about knife crime, this landmark new documentary for ITV offers an insight into the potential for sport to offer young people an alternative path in life to avoid them being drawn into crime and gang culture. Featuring contributions from the likes of Lord Sebastian Coe, Dame Kelly Holmes and Daley Thompson CBE this documentary focuses on the impact of Connie Henry’s Track Academy organisation on youngsters’ lives. It also highlights Connie’s aims to win government-backing for an idea she believes could harness the power of sport to offer positive opportunities to young people in communities afflicted by knife crime and across the country. Connie is a former Commonwealth Games triple jump medallist and founded Track Academy in North West London in 2007 aiming to turn young people’s lives who by their own admission might otherwise have been dragged into crime. One of those youngsters, Confidence Lawson, now 28 and a sprinter is seen competing in the British Athletics Indoor Championships after 11 years at Track Academy . He was originally referred to Connie by his own PE teacher, concerned Confidence was being led down a dangerous path. But he says Connie changed his life: “The best way I can summarise it, she’s like a second mum to me. Even to the point where she knows more about me than my own parents. [And] she tells it like it is.” The programme shows how Track Academy supports teenagers who aren’t elite athletes, including Humza Parvez (16), who is among the many teenagers who are clearly now seeing the benefits sport can bring. He says: “Firstly, I wasn’t really interested in it, but then I realised it was fun. I felt like I fitted in, it’s like a family…. This keeps me away from doing what kids do these days, carrying knives, drugs and all that. That stuff is wrong.” Among the supporters of Connie’s organisation is British athletic legend Daley Thompson, a double Olympic decathlon gold medallist, who addresses the youngsters providing an insight into his mindset and the benefits of getting involved in sport. He says: “I believe that kids’ health and wellbeing is as important as learning maths, and geography, and history and English.”

Miriam Margolyes confronts her fear of ageing and death to tackle our greatest taboo - our own mortality. She travels through the UK, Europe and America to take an unflinching look at different approaches and attitudes to dealing with death. Miriam starts her journey at Wren Hall, a UK dementia care home, to see what getting old might actually look like. Are there are any real alternatives to facing our inevitable decline? In America, Miriam meets people who are trying to achieve unlimited lifespans by thinking and feeling differently about death. She joins the world’s largest gathering of radical life extension enthusiasts at the Revolution Against Ageing and Death Festival in California. Thousands of people are willing to go to extreme lengths to avoid ageing with radical medical and technological advances. She discovers a growing industry of people selling the secrets of how to stay alive long enough to live forever. Energised but not entirely convinced, Miriam wonders if technology and a different mental attitude aren’t the only ways to stave off death. For some, a long life is based on healthy living and religious devotion. Loma Linda, near San Diego, is one of the world’s five ‘Blue Zones’ where people live longer than anyone else on earth. It’s also home to over 9,000 Seventh Day Adventists strict believers in healthy living and a devotion to God. Residents of Loma Linda survive ten years longer than the average American. Miriam joins the three-hour exercise regime of the local sprightly pensioners to learn more. At the Church Of Perpetual Life in Florida, Miriam meets a community who are devoted to science rather than God. The community hopes to prolong their lives with expensive supplements until immortality can be achieved through scientific breakthroughs. Miriam begins to wonder whether fighting death is beyond the pockets of most. What does this mean for those who can’t afford it According to statistics, homeless people in America are unlikely to live beyond 50. Miriam visits unmarked graves at a paupers’ cemetery to discover what death looks like for people with nothing. Returning to the UK humbled, Miriam heads back to Wren Hall. While the privileged fret about extending their lives, for most people, the best way to deal with death is to make the most of life.

Britain’s Brightest Family Wednesday 24th April, ITV1, 20.00

Miri is doing her best to integrate back into life in her small home town, having spent the past 18 years in prison. But with the graffiti still fading on the fence outside, and a rather unsavoury parcel in the morning post, the community is making it very clear that she is not welcome. Miri is undeterred as she prepares for her first day of work at Nathan’s Fish & Chip shop, intent on making a success of her fresh start. But how will the locals react to her new role at the already unpopular shop? Meanwhile, Miri’s childhood best-friend Mandy is eager to rebuild their old friendship. But it might be harder than she thinks to win back Miri, who is hurt by how her ex-best friend acted in the aftermath of that terrible night, all those years ago. Despite her best efforts, Miri struggles to adjust to her new job, and her socially-awkward boss Nathan is clearly unnerved by her past. On top of that, her increasingly persistent ex-boyfriend Dom is evidently incapable of having a platonic relationship, and the notso-passive aggression between her parents builds. Perhaps Miri needs a friend more than she realises. Her next-door neighbour, Billy offers a glimmer of hope. However, his attempts to kindle a friendship bring back unwelcome memories for Miri.

Britain’s Brightest Family, the fast-paced, hit quiz show is back for a brand new series on ITV and this time it’s bigger and better than before. Anne Hegerty, The Governess from ITV’s The Chase, returns to host the show where sixteen families will battle it out in a knockout tournament with £25,000 up for grabs for the winning family. Packed full of the show’s signature play-along questions for all the family, it kicks off with a quick-fire round, before heading into an intense head-tohead specialist round, where the families will have to choose which of them will face-off, answering questions on a randomly chosen subject. Then it’s on to a multiple choice round where they’ll all be playing at the same time. The more of them that get it right, the more points their family wins. Up next it’s a brand new memory round where one member of each family will have just 10 seconds to remember a sequence of shapes before having to frantically recreate what they’ve just seen. This all culminates in the final round, where the families will have 90 seconds to win through to the next heat, but with double points up for grabs, it’s anyone’s game. Episode 12: In the last of the quarter finals, two brilliant families pit their wits against each other for a chance to become Britain’s Brightest Family in this quiz hosted by the Queen of quizzing, The Governess, aka Anne Hegerty.

When Louisa meets Spiros’ wife, Dimitra, for the first time whilst shopping for a picnic, she inadvertently invites both Dimitra and Spiros on a trip to Kalami to see Larry. Much to both Louisa and Spiros’ surprise, Dimitra agrees. Louisa and Basil travel in the car with Dimitra and Spiros, whilst a sea sick Theo, Lugaretzia and Gerry travel with Les in his boat. However, when they arrive in Kalami, they discover that Larry is in fact in Paris and their picnic is eaten by hungry animals. With tensions high, the group are forced to go to the local bar which is run by Captain Creech, who gifts Gerry a pair of lemurs. Meanwhile, Margo is staying in Dorset with Prue and Geoffrey and managed to engage the usually conservative village in her European style.

Tributo Fest

19th April 2019 - 25th April 2019

23 CW

TributoFest ready to... Rule The World’s brandnew, five-piece production show, featuring Tony Lewis as Robbie Williams, will take you on the ULTIMATE Take That journey! Featuring the 1990s, Robbie leaving the band and his famous Knebworth show, the band splitting up and reforming, and sections from all the tours to the present day, this tour shouldn’t be missed by any Take That fan! This high-energy, full-scale production, guaranteed to have the audience on their feet, will blow the roof off any venue! The show promises to the best, visually, so far, with full lighting, acrobats and backing singers. Rule The World have been recognised as the No.1 Take

That tribute act in the world. They recently appeared alongside Nicole Kidman, Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters and THE REAL TAKE THAT on BBC1’s The Graham Norton Show. A stunned Gary Barlow said, in amazement: “He sounds like me!”, and he praised the band saying: “These guys are good.” Rule The World have also been featured on ITV1’s Daybreak, and have had rave reviews from many people, including TV personality Ricky Tomlinson, Denise Van Outen, Jason Orange’s mother, and Mr GARY BARLOW himself, who tweeted the band to say he thought they were “brilliant”. They are the ONLY Take That

tribute show in the land ever to have been praised by Take That’s lead singer!

The band have performed at many prestigious events around the world, including a private party for Coldplay and their management team, featuring many celebrity guests. They have also performed with the cast of ITV1’s Emmerdale, and have been fortunate to travel the world, playing large, outdoor festivals in Barcelona, Germany, Austria, Ireland and more. They have performed as a headline act on Royal Caribbean cruise ships, and have a big contract with Butlin’s Holiday Parks, where they regularly perform alongside S Club 7, East 17, Damage, Gareth Gates and Bobby Davro. They have performed a three-year theatre tour, with their live band and backing dancers, in many amazing UK theatres, including Manchester Palace, Edinburgh Playhouse, Leeds Grand and York Opera House, to name just a few. The Rule The World tribute show performs with four members of the band (minus Tony Lewis as Robbie), then Tony takes the stage as Robbie Williams. For the final part, all five members are on stage for the ultimate Take That Tribute Show. For the past decade, Tony Lewis has been wowing audiences, worldwide, with his amazing portrayal of Britain’s Greatest Entertainer, Robbie Williams!

After making his debut in Trevor Chance’s Legends, Tony has gone on to perform across the globe, leaving audiences constantly gagging for more! He turns heads wherever he goes, leaving onlookers asking: “Is it, or isn’t it?” In 2005, Tony was lucky enough to meet Robbie in person, chatting about women, music, and, most importantly, football, even gaining his idol’s approval with Robbie saying: “I think it’s great. I’m really flattered! It’s bloody hard work, being me!” In 2008, Tony beat all his “Robbie” competition, landing a spot on BBC 1’s The One And Only, and performing in front of seven million viewers, for six consecutive weeks, eventually bowing out in the final to Dusty Springfield! The resemblance is so uncanny that Tony has appeared in numerous promotional campaigns and TV shows throughout Europe. But the highlight must be playing Robbie in a series of official short films for the album, Rudebox. The looks, the moves, the voice, the ego! The show has it all, and is an accurate portrayal of a Take That concert, featuring all the biggest hits, including Never Forget, Greatest Day, Back For Good, Relight My Fire, Everything Changes, Shine, Pray, and many more.

CW 24

Let’s meet the Tributo Fest

Gary Barlow (Dan Maines) Dan was born in Stockport, Manchester, and first began his musical career at the age of seven, when his father taught him the basics of music, and how to play the trombone. He developed his musical knowledge and decided to be a percussionist. After several years of hard work, he became a member of The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain (NYBB), at the age of 14. By the time he was 17, Dan was voted “Player of The Year” in the NYBB. A few years later, he was approached by the worldfamous Black Dyke Band, and offered the position of principal percussionist. With Black Dyke, he went on to perform at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, such as The Royal Albert Hall, The Birmingham Symphony Hall, and The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Even though winning contests such as The European Brass Band Championships, Daniel was never really happy until he had a microphone in his hand! Dan’s first singing debut was in primary school, but, after a somewhat-dreadful performance of Jason Donovan’s hit, Any Dream Will Do, in the school talent show, he soon realised he needed to work on it! After a few years he learnt more instruments, including the piano and guitar, and began writing songs. At the age of 21, Daniel decided that he wanted to become a professional singer. After a few showcases in front of various agents, he found himself on the cabaret circuit, doing 3-4 gigs a week. Early in 2007, Daniel saw an advert looking for singers for a Take That tribute band. He applied, instantly, and went for an audition. A couple of days passed, and the call came offering him the position of Gary Barlow. Dan said: “Being a huge Take That and Gary Barlow fan, I was absolutely ecstatic about getting the job, and couldn’t wait to get started! Then, after meeting the other three lads, I was even happier to get the chance to work with such highly-talented guys.”

Mark Owen (Matt Hall) In 2018, Matt produced and acted in Ashes, his own short film. He has previously appeared as leading characters in ITV1’s Heartbeat, The Royal and Unforgiven. He trained at the Yorkshire School of Performing Arts, Stage 84, Leeds College of Music and The National Youth Theatre, and has appeared in leading roles in musical theatre, including Seymour in Little Shop Of Horrors, Danny in Grease, the Tin Man in The Wizard Of Oz, Kashoggi in We Will Rock You, and Baby John in West Side Story. Radio credits include award-winning Mummies & Daddies and 28 (BBC Radio 4). He has also appeared in the upcoming pilot for sci-fi crime drama Humber City. Stage work includes North South Shorts, and a recent, brand-new play called When Both Sides Surrender. In his spare time, Matt enjoys writing his own TV dramas, and, like the real Mark Owen, loves writing and recording his own songs.

Jason Orange (Ash Stevenson) Ash is a professionally-trained, musical-theatre performer. Since beginning his drama-school training, he has been singing solo, regularly, on the gig circuit, and as part of Take That tribute band, Rule The World. In 2018, Ash has been part of The 100 on BBC 1’s All Together Now in 2018 and 2019. Since graduating from drama school, he has made various stage appearances, including Prince Charming, in Beauty and The Beast (pantomime), as well as solo performances, and he also hosted charity evenings. His style ranges from modern pop/rock covers to toned-down acoustic sets, evenings of musical theatre, and more. His infectious energy and natural northern charm is a hit with audiences, and his high-energy shows have everyone on their feet!

Tributo Fest

Howard Donald (Gabriel Keogh) In May 2014, Gabriel (or G, as he is known to friends) joined the boys at Rule the World fulltime, realising a near-forgotten dream of musical performing. He is, quite literally, deliriously happy at the thought of singing for his supper(!) G grew up in London, where, apart from early break-out performances as a six-year-old Father Christmas, and playing the Van Der Valk theme tune on Euphonium, did little in the way of showing off until his A-Levels, when his college offered “Drama Improvisation” as extracurricular study. After finishing college, he worked on group-devised theatre projects, touring these around the country, as well as acting/stage-managing in the London pub theatre scene. But it was a joint Anglo-Soviet (yes, he’s older than he looks) cultural exchange which eventually led him to shelve acting, and to study Russian at university in Leeds, where he has lived ever since. In the last several years, he has, by degrees, integrated back into the Yorkshire acting scene, culminating with a decisive break away from any and all “safety nets” (ie a day job), pursuing his passion, full-time, since Autumn 2011. He has worked with the West Yorkshire Playhouse and Opera North, as well as London fringe theatre, and TV and radio work. His acting credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck), Betrayal (Jerry) and A Woman of No Importance (Gerald). More recently, he played multiple roles (puppeteer, Ginnabrik, MrTumnus and assistant second director) in 2013’s Narnia Experience at the Leftbank Leeds, and appeared in Saltaire’s 2014 Shakespeare in the Park production of Taming of the Shrew (Petruchio).

A word from our sponsors...

Homes & Away, the Tenerife property people

WE are a well-established, independent property agency, with over 30 years’ experience in the UK and Tenerife property markets. Based in the South of Tenerife, in Golf del Sur, we are a local company, with our own roots in the local community. We specialise in golf properties, predominantly in Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and Costa Adeje, and have an extensive portfolio. It includes all types of residential and holiday properties, from the smallest studio apartment, through to the largest of villas and bungalows. We also have a number of properties in the surrounding

areas, including rural locations. Why not pop in for coffee and a chat? We’d love to meet you. We are here to help you Buying a Tenerife property can be a daunting task. We don’t have pushy, commission-hungry sales people, and ours is a morefriendly approach. We treat you as an individual person, and show you properties that fit your requirements, not properties we’d like to sell. To do this, we begin

by listening! At Homes & Away, we will assist you with every step of the process, in the search to find your ideal property. We will guide you throughout, from making an offer, right through to moving in, decoration and furnishings, and getting your water and electricity turned on. We can even arrange property-inspection visits for three, four or seven nights, as required, at special rates. Time to meet the team (they’re mostly human!)

Tanya is the boss lady, and she’s been in the business hundreds of years! Before residing in Tenerife, she lived high in the hills of Tibet, where she was a very-successful alpaca farmer. Unfortunately, she was so successful, the alpacas formed their own society, held elections, and voted to deport Tanya to the island of Tenerife. On arrival, Tanya discovered it wasn’t suitable here for animal breeding, because of the terrain, so she settled on real-estate marketing, instead. She’s doing OK now, but misses the alpacas terribly, even after all this time. Denise is an Edinburgh lassie,

Las Zocas, in a lovely tranquil setting, and we have, currently, several rescue furbabies for

adoption or to foster. We have rescued animals as small as a hamster and as big as a horse! All our furbabies are cared for and loved very much by our rescue-centre manager, Uncle Lee, and his team. Lee also needs more volunteers. The centre has plenty of open space for all the furbabies to get a lot of exercise and play, and we have an orchard in which they love running around. We would like to build more kennels, and on our wish list for

the centre is a swimming pool for rescued animals’ physiques, and an agility course. Molly’s Vets opened in August 2016, and, since then, we have built up a lovely client list. We are only a small clinic, but it has a very happy, close atmosphere. We have had a refurb, installing a grooming room and air conditioning. It’s called Molly’s because she was Elaine’s first rescue furbaby at three weeks old. Everybody loves Molly, and she does her

now living the dream in Tenerife. Having previously worked for NASA, now she enjoys mingling with the stars. She likes to name-drop, and has the Shakira triplets on her friends list. (You know.... Shakira, Shakira, Shakira... like the song.) Unfortunately, she doesn’t often hang out with them, because she finds it difficult to tell them apart, which makes any conversations a tad awkward. Elsa is our French belle. Another smart cookie, she speaks at least 27 languages. We’re positive that clients call the office just to hear her accent. She previously worked with James Bond.

meet and greet, whether she’s working at the charity shop or the clinic. Our vet, Alberto, has always wanted to work with animals, and this shows when you meet him. He’s very passionate about his work, and very loving with all the animals we have met. Elaine always dreamt of working with animals, helping the village vet when she was younger. She is now known as Auntie Elaine to many furbabies.

Molly’s comes to the rescue!

MOLLY’S charity shop is situated in the bottom square of San Blas, in Golf del Sur. We stock a wide range of clothing and shoes for all the family, plus toys, electrical and household items. Our shop is run by manager Paula, and her friendly team of volunteers. You are guaranteed a warm welcome when you visit, and we are always looking for more volunteers, if you love animals and have a little bit of free time. Our rescue centre is based near

In the first episode of this new series, three entrepreneurs come together to discover what our customers think of their precious products. They’re nervous, but ready to watch the customers unboxing, testing and giving their feedback on what they like, dislike and what they think could be improved for each invention. In today’s episode, we meet Kris, Andrew and Ashley, all hoping to get a high score from our customers and become today’s winner. Kris and her husband Martin have invented (by accident) a unique product which claims to add 6 inches to any divan bed. The Pillow Shelf is an adaptable bed extender which fits onto the head of a standard divan bed to add extra inches under the pillow, perfect for tall people who struggle to fit into standard sized beds. Andrew and business partner Helen have invented a double food and water bowl with mat in one piece. The Rollabowl can be rolled up and when rolled

Save Money: Lose Weight

Save Money Lose Weight continues to reveal a wealth of money saving tips and tricks to help you lose weight and eat well without spending a fortune. Sian Williams and Dr Ranj Singh get to the bottom of what’s money well spent. This week Chloe Madeley’s “Fat Loss Blitz” is road-tested £ for LB by 36 year old Civil Servant Dev. Will this diet based on combining exercise 6 days a week with low carb, protein rich food help Dev shift the pounds and help him find love? And how will the diet stack up on our value for money leader board? We also revisit Corinne, a £ for LB road test dieter from 2017 to see if she carried on her weight loss journey after trialling the Military diet. Has she carried on losing the weight or piled it back on? Sian Williams compares some of our favourite and bestselling off the shelf foods with their low calorie and low fat equivalents to see how we can eat healthier without compromising on price and taste. This time, she is joined by dietician Linia Patel to investigate how the humble loaf stacks up in terms of calories, nutrition and cost. Can you eat carbs without blowing your diet? And our road testers put supermarket own brand wholemeal loaves to the Save Money taste test.

‘Wealth’ firm cost expats €20m, but owner runs off

33 CW

Guardia’s six of the best canes Columbia thieves

THE beleaguered boss of a failed wealthmanagement company, which is understood to have lost expats more than €20 million, has ignored a court summons.

Darren Kirby, of Alicantebased Continental Wealth Management (CWM), failed to turn up at Denia Court on 26th March 26, and, according to sources at The Olive Press online newspaper, he was scheduled to appear alongside former business partners, who did turn up. The case involves a trio of investors, who lost substantial sums of money when the company folded in 2017. Kirby was believed to have fled to Australia following the collapse, finally returning to Alicante last year. “Darren has been sent a Burofax, which he didn’t sign for, so the court will now have to pursue him in other ways,” said a source. “A judge is dealing with this and it’s under legal review. We understand that he is currently in England.” The Olive Press revealed how CWM folded in 2017, abruptly, losing hundreds of expats’ life savings in the process. The company, which was based at Denia’s Marriott Hotel, had “8-10 telesales staff”, with clients scattered around Europe, said a former member of staff, who added: “It was a prestigious place, but one day they just shut the door.” Victims had raised fears about being asked to sign blank, dealing instructions

and investing their pensions in high-risk assets, which paid large commissions. One Costa Blanca-based pensioner said he lost €210,000 after transferring €470,000, despite stating he had a low-to-medium risk attitude. “I was asked, ‘Can you sign this blank form? We will fill in the details’. I did that, trusting they would act in my best interests,” he said. “They should have been looking out for me, but they were just feathering their own nests. To me, they knew what they were doing.” Lawyer Antonio Flores, whose Lawbird company is representing a number of victims, said that signing blank investment sheets was

“very worrying”. He added: “This negates the very essence of financial advisory services,” said Mr Flores. “It is a blank cheque to invest wherever, whenever. “It is very worrying, as they were investing clients’ money in highly-risk investments, as well as dubious funds, just because they paid the higher commissions.” He added that losses sustained by investors should, however, be recoverable, because the investments that failed to perform, or went bust, were linked to lifeinsurance policies. When the online news staff finally got hold of Kirby in October 2017, he denied all responsibility, simply saying: “I have lost my world.”

GUARDIA Civil officers made six arrests during an operation against a gang suspected of breaking into dozens of properties, in eight Spanish provinces. The Guardia launched operation Esomon after a hit on a property in Guardamar del Segura, near Torrevieja, last December. The owner surprised one of the robbers, who injured him with a screwdriver before making off. Subsequent investigations led to the identification of two of the thieves in Batres, south of Madrid. It emerged that they were members of a highly-organised, criminal group from Columbia, operating across the country. The Guardia said the gang, comprising four men and a woman, targeted properties after the occupants had left for work, using a sophisticated tool which allowed them to

open all types of locks. Once inside, they stole expensive items such as jewellery, electronic devices, designer clothes and bags, which they sold to a businessman in Coslada, Madrid. They also took personal documentation, and, said the Guardia, the female gang member used the documents fraudulently, to finance purchases of high-end goods, including furniture, sunglasses and mobile phones. Three of the gang members were detained in Valencia, following a car chase through the city streets, after they had carried out a series of robberies in Xativa. The arrests of the other two members, and the businessman receiving the stolen goods, followed three days later in Madrid. The Guardia said they believed the gang were responsible for break-ins in Alicante, Valencia, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Valladolid, Lugo, Madrid and Toledo.

there is always a chance, which is worrying.” Mr Caldwell had been administered Nolotil, via a drip, while recovering from a gallbladder operation at Malaga’s CHIP private hospital. Yet hospitals and clinics around Spain have outlawed the drug, or at least warned patients about it, including Marbella’s Costa del Sol hospital. Nolotil has been found to cause sepsis and a rapid drop in white blood cells, leading to the deaths of several British holiday-makers. Fortunately, Keith suffered no ill-effects, but Sylvia said the “scary” incident left her deeply concerned for other expats.

Medical translator Cristina Garcia del Campo, who has campaigned against the drug for years, said: “Unfortunately, this is happening quite a lot. “People never know when they are going to be given Nolotil, but I believe they will only be safe once it has been fully banned.” Last November, AEMES, Spain’s medical agency, issued a directive to all healthcare bodies to stop giving the drug to British and Irish visitors, unless carefully monitored. It came after Ms Garcia del Campo presented hundreds of cases in Madrid, many uncovered by the Olive Press. The private hospital failed to comment.

Patients still given banned painkiller BRITISH patients in Spain are still being issued with the banned painkiller Nolotil, despite a directive issued to health bodies last year, following countless deaths.

A Costa del Sol hospital handed 78-year-old expat Keith Caldwell the danger drug, following his operation this month. But his wife remembered, soon after the doctor administered the drug, that it had been banned in the UK, US and most of Europe. “When we realised he’d already had two bottles of Nolotil, I was shocked,” said

Sylvia Caldwell, 71. She told the Olive Press online

newspaper: “I know it does not affect everyone, but

FOUR businessmen, from Chiclana de la Frontera in Cádiz, have been accused of stripping a dying employee of his uniform on the way to hospital, to avoid being held accountable for his death.

The 42-year-old workman, who had no social security, no specific training to operate heavy machinery, and no adequate, protective clothing, died from injuries sustained while operating a forklift for the business. The men who removed his uniform have been accused of involuntary manslaughter. But though the accident took place on 17th July, 2018, it wasn’t until this January that the Guardia Civil launched an investigation to clarify what happened. Given that the poor employee arrived at the hospital without his uniform, the cause of death initially was not ruled to be the result of a workplace accident. This meant that his wife and two children were left “practically destitute,” since they were allowed only to receive the pension provided for deaths caused by common contingencies, said the Guardia in a

statement last week. But there was more to the story. On 17th July, the workman was manning an electric forklift truck, despite having had no training to operate heavy machinery, or protective clothing, according to investigators. When the workman was seriously injured after being

trapped in the machine’s lifting mechanism, the business manager and another employee put him into a private car and drove him to the La Longuera medical centre, in Chiclana de la Frontera. And, said the Guardia: “On the way, they stripped him of his work clothes, which had

the company’s logo, so as to not raise suspicion and avoid being held responsible.” The two men told the doctors “he had fallen accidentally” outside of work. The employee was transferred to the University Hospital of Puerto Real, because of the seriousness of his injuries, and he died hours later. Eight months after his death, the Guardia Civil believe there is enough evidence to prove that “the death of the workman was due to a lack of training in operating the machinery he was using.” But this was just one of many irregularities the officers found in the investigation, being conducted in collaboration with the work inspectorate, which the family of the victim contacted at the end of October. By reconstructing the events of 17th July, investigators discovered that the employee was not given protective clothing and

was not covered by social security. Indeed, none of the company’s workers had social security, and the business also lacked safety and evacuation plans. The four businessmen were arrested at the end of March and released soon after, with charges. The judge is investigating them for involuntary manslaughter and violating workers’ rights. The men are also facing sanctions from the inspectorate of work and social security, because of the numerous irregularities found at the company, as well as a possible fine from the Chiclana planning department for other related infractions. Thanks to the police investigation, the victim’s wife and children are now receiving the widow-andorphans’ pension, provided for deaths caused by workplace accidents.

Teaching the children! What a corker!

WE have been busy again with our educational programme, involving the local school children. With Easter approaching, we have been teaching them how to care for their pets, and also about chickens, and the difference between battery and freerange. We are passionate about educating children, in the hope that the horrendous pain and suffering, inflicted on the animals in Tenerife, is greatly reduced. Please microchip We can never stress enough the importance of microchipping your dog, and ensuring that the contact details are correct and updated, when appropriate. We do have a large number of dogs brought into the refuge by Protection

Civil, from the streets, with microchips that haven’t had the information updated. This causes unnecessary stress for the dogs, because they have to stay at the refuge until the owner is found. Happy Easter! We would like to wish all the friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol a happy Easter weekend. Once again, a very big thank-you for all your help and support. Dog walking Our dogs love to go out for a walk, so, if you do have some spare time during our opening hours, then do come and visit us and make a dog very happy. They love some exercise and TLC. Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the

refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol.

THIS lovely boy is about 10 weeks old and looking for a loving home. He has been deflead and wormed, and we will pay for his first vaccination. If you would like to meet him, please send us a private Facebook message. Please note that there is a minimum adoption fee of €20, to help cover our costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Adoptions We have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone’s sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All adults are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Please ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm. As previously mentioned, all cats go for a week’s trial, in your home. We need you! Fostering kittens is very rewarding, watching them growing and playing, feeding them and realising how dependent they are on you. It’s perfect for people who don’t want a full-time cat of their own. We are looking for foster carers, to look after bottle-feeders and weaners, as well as big kittens. You would need to be able to drive, and have somewhere safe for them. All food and litter, bedding, litter trays etc. will be supplied, and any vet bills will be paid by us. Please help us to help the kittens in need. Cats Welfare arrange the adoptions, once the kittens are ready. Please send us a Facebook private message, if you are interested Shop volunteers We need someone who would be happy to run our Cats Welfare Charity Boutique Shop Facebook page, as well as those who would like to work in our charity shop. Shifts are

from 10am-2pm and 2-6pm, and you will never work alone. The air-conditioned shop has a lovely atmosphere, and tea, coffee, and a fridge full of goodies are provided. They’re all there to be enjoyed, while in the company of our friendly volunteers, and very valued customers! If you are interested, contact us on Facebook, or pop into the shop for more information. Even if you can only spare a few hours a week, that’s fine! Clothes, books and jigsaws We are appealing to you all, please, for both ladies’ and men’s clothes, for our shop. We also need books of all genres, and in great condition, as well as jigsaws. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

A HUGE thank-you goes out to Maureen Sands and her fabulous students, as well as her team of amazing teachers at Estrellas Theatre School, from Helping Hands in Tenerife. Liz Montague, who runs the charity, said: “Thank you so much for supporting us. You raised €4,000 in total at your recent Talent Show 2019, and €2000 of this donation will fund scholarships to underprivileged children to attend this fantastic Theatre School.

K9 Animal News

Adopting a puppy HAVE you just adopted a puppy, or are thinking about adopting one? Puppies are very cute, loveable, little animals, but please remember that they do grow up and get bigger. The most important thing to remember is they need to be trained. At K9, we currently have four small puppies, two of which are reserved for the UK. Two, young, male puppies are left. They are mainly Podenco, with a small bit of Sharpei in the mix. They are very playful and love to be cuddled, and it essential for puppies to have human and dog socialisation early on in their lives, so they can adjust to the world outside. Unfortunately, puppies are always found on the island, either abandoned or brought to the refuge, and we always do our very best to look after them. The good news is that puppies are always adopted very quickly, but it is essential for the new owner to train them from the beginning. The best way to train your puppy is to make the process fun and positive. They are naturally sociable animals, so do not like to be away from people for too long. To get them used to being alone for a period of time, introduce the process slowly, by creating a safe place for them in the house, and gradually increasing the distance and length of time you leave them alone, until they are calm and relaxed. The most important behaviour you can teach your puppy is to “come” when you call them. A dog that has a solid recall can be given more freedom to run and play, in areas where dogs are allowed to be off-lead.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

Karaoke rocks Amarilla … at the Rockin Horse! By John Zammit

The main point of teaching this behaviour is to use a recall cue that always means “something good”, such as a chance to play, or a high-value activity. Training your puppy requires a lot of patience, and is it vital that you are consistent. For example, if you let your puppy on the bed most nights, and then, one night, decide you don’t want this to happen, this only confuses the puppy. They don’t learn, and they only try to get back on to the bed. Keep it consistent and positive, all the time. So now we have the two small puppies at K9, looking for their forever homes. Come up and meet them and give them a cuddle. We can’t guarantee they won’t steal your heart, though! Meet our other dogs! We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 9.30am-1.30pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife. com

Meet Lucia (Lucy)

TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by The Duke Shops, Costa Adeje, continues to be an extremely popular, fun-filled event, not only for contestants, but also the spectators.

The sixth heat took place at The Rockin Horse, on Amarilla Golf, and it was busy night, packed with onlookers cheering on the performers. As in previous heats, we had a full complement of singers, and, again, a wide variety of songs and ages. Kerry Railton, Tenerife Loves Karaoke’s host for the night, got proceedings underway with Dougie singing a great karaoke tune, Andy Williams’ Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, kicking off the evening to great applause. Following on was firm favourite Jo, celebrating her birthday, with Björk’s It’s Oh So Quiet. But, believe me, it certainly wasn’t, after she had finished. Charlie came next with A Stevie Wonder number, Superstition, which had the crowd on their feet again. Then it was Frankie’s turn, singing Diamonds Are Forever, by Shirley Bassey. Emma, who took to the stage next, sang a beautiful version of Boys and Girls, by Pixie Lott, and then came the interval. Barry, one of the judges, along with Thomas and Kerry, entertained The Rockin Horse crowd, while everyone else recharged their glasses and had a comfort break. The second half started with Lee providing a superb performance of Stealers

Then came Sunshine on Leith, by The Proclaimers, and Donna singing a classic by Billie Jo Spears, Blanket On The Ground. Then came our last contestant, Alex, with Elvis Presley’s I Just Can’t Help Believin’. What a heat we’d just witnessed, from the contestants and an awesome crowd. The judges, who had a tough time deciding who would be going into the sing-off, confirmed that they were Frankie, Lee, Emma and Michelle. And each name was announced to great applause, as there had been all night, for every contestant. Everyone had performed brilliantly, but, despite providing everyone at The Rockin Horse with an entertaining night, just two singers could go through to this year’s semi-finals, and they were announced as Frankie and Lee. We would like to thank everyone who entered this heat, at The Rockin Horse, as well as Karen and Barry and the staff, making this another memorable heat. And staff dressed the bar brilliantly! Avocado thieves also damaged some farms

POLICE in Axarquia have arrested seven people accused of stealing almost 30,000 kilos of avocados in the east of Malaga.

The suspects, aged 19-30, are said to have committed the thefts across a dozen farmhouses and farms. The National Police say the group stole the avocados mainly in the El Trapiche area, causing damage costing more than €60,000. Officers began an investigation, following complaints of a spate of night-time thefts, concerning mangoes and avocados. And, after increasing surveillance, officers were able to identify several members of the group. The police claimed that the thieves gained entry to the farms by cutting surrounding fences, before driving a vehicle in to collect fruit, and also help them make a quick getaway if discovered. The group were said to have sold

the avocados and mangoes in fruit shops. Officers said the gang paid several people between €50-200 to use their ID documents to sell the crops. The police also allege the group stole farm equipment from some

properties. Over the past year, residents of Velez-Malaga and Axarquia have complained about a spate of avocado thefts, some of which have left farmers with damaged properties and trees.

Supermarket waves a farewell to plastic

ONE of Spain’s bestknown supermarkets has ditched single-use plastic carrier bags, in favour of sustainable alternatives.

Mercadona, which owns 1,636 supermarkets across Spain and Portugal, has announced that the plastic shopping bags will no longer be available. The Spanish, family-run brand is offering three alternatives: paper

bags, large raffia bags and longer-life plastic bags, which contain between 50-70% recycled material. A company spokesperson said, in support of the “circular economy”, that the recycled bags use plastic packaging from their own supermarkets. Social media users hit out at the supermarket’s huge consumption of plastic in their products, including plastic gloves in the bakery section, which, say Mercadona, it is “working on”.

ITV exhaust emissions

By Emma

from Motorworld

WHEN it’s time for your car’s ITV, the most usual items to check would be wheels, tyres, brakes and bodywork damage, some of which we have already covered.

We often forget about our cars’ contaminating emissions. This is one of the fundamental aspects to passing an ITV, because it is the most-common cause of failure. For diesel engines, the most important test, when checking the emissions, is the opacity of the exhaust gases. The opacity limit depends on when the car was first registered, because the laws have changed, significantly, in the past few years. We are

going to clarify doubts you may have. How are gases measured? Gases are measured out of

the tail, or exhaust pipe, at the rear of the car. In general, if you follow the manufacturer’s servicing schedules, and always use good-quality fuel, perhaps you would be less likely to have a problem. This test is performed by putting the engine at idle, then accelerating the car to a speed of disconnection. (To the point where the injection with acceleration is empty.) To avoid damaging the engine, the ideal temperature to check this is over 80ºC, with all external energy drains disconnected, such as lights, radio etc. The reader is introduced into the exhaust pipe, which is capable of measuring the

opacity level or maximum absorption co-efficiency, which is the smoke emitted from the exhaust. The value of gases for cars registered after 1st July 2008 is 1.5 m/l. If your car is older, the limit is set at 2.5m/1, for nonturbo vehicles, and 3m/1 for those fitted with a turbo. For new vehicles with the new emission sticker ITV Euro 6 and Euro VI, this limit is lowered to 0.7m/1. Vehicles registered before 1st January 1980 are exempt. In the opacity test, the maximum number of allowed readings is eight. This allows the exhaust to blow out any residual soot sitting in the exhaust, and

then get a correct reading. If the result is high, the last three readings are used to calculate the final amount. The ITV manual states that there are three requirements to check gases. *The engine should be hot following the manufacturer’s specifications, if there were any *Before beginning the test, the engine would be revved to between 2500 and 3000 rpm, for approximately one minute, so as to reach the desired temperature in the catalytic converter, or DPF. *Hybrid vehicles would require the manual override to switch on the engine, in order for the test to be completed .

natural remedies for anything. Ever! Nearly all nutritional classes were cancelled at medical colleges, and, if a “medicine” were not created using chemicals in a laboratory, and if it couldn’t be patented and sold for huge profit, it wouldn’t be considered medicine at all. In fact, anyone prescribing a natural remedy for any disease, disorder, allergy, rash, head cold, fever, flu, headache, tummy ache, or any other malady, was labelled a “quack”. Shortly after the AMA began running its huge chemical medication Ponzi scheme, the FDA and CDC hopped aboard. Then, during and after World War II, American food was

processed with chemical additives and preservatives, canned, and shipped out for mass consumption. This guaranteed that unsuspecting consumers would eat the chemicalladen food, and then be forced to seek medical advice for their chemicallydriven health symptoms. Nobody realised that the very medicine they would be prescribed for their chemicalfood disorders would only address and “manage” the symptoms of disease and cell disorder, but never cure them. Their cleansing organs were being flooded with toxins, while burning the proverbial candle at both ends. Then came the advent of vaccines, of known

neurotoxins and carcinogens, which, supposedly, saved Americans from all infectious diseases, but was also a big con. Most people aren’t aware that chemotherapy creates new cancers in the body, and only staves off the cancer being treated for 3% of the time? That means chemotherapy, which is a prescription, fails 97% of the time, on average. Would you board a plane with just a 3% chance of landing successfully? Once you stop eating, drinking, injecting, and putting chemicals on your body, your cleansing organs can do their innate jobs, and your blood can cleanse itself, and your brain fog and body inflammation disappears.

Americans swallow bitter pill, to offset the medicinal failures! By Val Sainsbury MILLIONS of Americans are taking prescription medications, simply to deal with the side-effects of their other prescription medications. This latest epidemic has been termed “SES”, which stands for Side Effect Syndrome, and it is a serious matter. Understanding why all prescription medications are made in laboratories using chemicals, is the key to being aware of the root cause of SES.

And who can fathom why medical doctors, who study at college for eight years, prescribe more experimental chemicals to enhance their patients’ health decline, caused by other experimental chemicals their patients are already taking, at their recommendation? It gets even worse. The new medications, aimed solely at treating the side-effects, and new symptoms caused by the other medications, carry with them brand-new side-effects, which further punish the health of those SES victims, compounding the epidemic. A century ago in the US, the American Medical Association (AMA) decided that medical doctors could no longer recommend

At last! That vital away win for CDT

CD Tenerife

TENERIFE secured a vital victory in Madrid, with their first away win of the season, even though they made it difficult for themselves by conceding a goal in the first minute.

But battling spirit, along with goals from Nano, Jorge Sáenz and Malbasic, moved them up to 14th in the league, and, slowly but surely, they are edging towards safety. Following Extremadura’s unexpected victory against Malaga, this match became even more important for both teams, because neither wanted to get dragged further into the relegation battle. Both teams sought to keep possession of the ball to try to reach their oppositions area with good “triangle” passing, looking for openings and space for their attackers, but the actual start of the game changed everything! In the first minute, Tenerife were pressing Majadahonda hard and had Morillas forced into his own corner. But he managed a back-heel to Enzo, which led to a fast upfield break by Aitor Ruibal and Fede Varela towards

Motorsport FORMER MotoGP rider Héctor Barberá retired last Sunday after his bike had been stolen from the pits, forcing him to scratch from the SuperSport world championship at MotorLand, in the Alcañiz region of Teruel. Barbera, who switched, who switched to SuperSport last year after being dropped by Moto2 team Pons Racing because of a drink-driving charge and loss of his licence, said the theft was “the last straw” in a series of frustrations, which left him angry and disappointed.

the Tenerife danger area. Varela found Hector, who shot and beat Dani Hernadez, only for the ball to strike a post. But it fell straight to Iza, who shuffled it in from less than a yard out. It was a dream start for the home team, but a nightmare for Tenerife: 1-0 to Majadahonda after less than 60 seconds! But Tenerife showed the spirit that has been present in recent matches, and recovered quickly, keeping possession and prowling dangerously around Basilio’s area. They won a corner on

the left in the 13th minute and the ball fell nicely to Malbasic, who half-shot and half-scuffed it. But Nano was on hand at the far post to divert it in for the equaliser. The rest of the first half was a pleasure to watch, with attractive football from two bold teams, wanting to attack and find a way through. Both keepers saw plenty of action and made important saves, especially Dani from Ruibal, to keep it level as they went in for the break. Coming out for the second half, everything continued the same way: strong

rhythm and high pressure. But this time, Tenerife had the quick start. The ball broke to Jorge Sáenz on the edge of the Majadahonda area, and he released a lovely rightfooted shot that beat Basilio and nestled in the bottom corner of the goal, putting Tenerife 2-1 ahead after 51 minutes. Majadahonda coach Iriondo reacted immediately by replacing Galán for Benito, and changing their formation to 4-3-3, as they went in search of a draw against a buoyant Tenerife. The change seemed to

work as the home team took control and started to exert more pressure on the visitors. Hector had a clearcut chance, one-on-one with Dani, but he fell asleep and ended up shooting into the side-netting. As the game drew to a close, it looked settled at 2-1, when a long ball was played out of defence for Malbasic to chase. But keeper Basilio came 10 yards out of his area to intercept it easily, passing it to one of his defenders. However, Malbasic had different ideas. Either the pass wasn’t a good one, or Luso thought his keeper would hoof it upfield. But Malbasic managed to run between them, get the ball, and shoot from 35 yards out, into an open goal: 3-1 to Tenerife in the 87th minute! As the final whistle blew, the joy and relief of a first away win was plain to see in the players, the coach and the travelling away fans, as a vital three points was being brought back to Tenerife, in a well-fought, well-deserved victory. Their next game is at home on Sunday, against 10th placed Almeria, so don’t bet against a home win, because morale is high in the CDT camp.

Bike theft hastened Héctor’s retirement Already, his participation in Sunday’s Aragón race was doubtful, since his Yamaha barely dragged its way around 10 laps of the circuit because the engine was worn out. It had clocked 1,600km, yet race riders are recommended to replace their engines after 1,500km, and less if they want to remain competitive. Barberá announced on Instagram the same day that he was retiring from motorsport, saying: “That’s

what we’ve been driven to. “For my own sake, and other riders’ safety, I can’t race today. We don’t have the means, and what started out as a dream has ended as a nightmare.” The 32-year-old, from the Valencia province of Dos Aguas, also admitted: “Problems with nonpayment, and failure to meet contract terms with who was supposed to be our main sponsor, have made this SSP adventure end.”

Athletics

Will Noah be the new Usain Bolt? EVEN with all those Olympic gold medals and all those world records, it took more than Usain Bolt’s dazzling speed to make him an international icon.

It took his personality. The way he turned each race into a theatrical event, preening and posing before settling into the blocks, flashing that megawatt smile as he blazed across the finish line. Bolt made fast running look easy, and fun, which is something else he and Noah Lyles have in common. If you haven’t heard of Noah yet, you soon will! The 21-year-old is faster than Bolt was at the same age, in both the 100m and 200m. His zany socks, creative victory celebrations and

Renaissance Man interests are sure to make him a big star of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. “If I can be that big name that everybody sees, and they see that I’m having fun, I feel it will encourage others to try to go for their dreams,” said Lyles. “When I was younger, I was scared of growing up, because I thought I would have to get a normal job. But look at me now. I get paid to run in a circle, and what’s better than that?” Noah, who made a considerable impact on the track in his teens, also made the Olympic trials in 2016, finishing fourth and missing a spot on the Rio team by just 0.09secs. He also has a younger brother, Josephus, and he just happened to be part of the US team who won the 4x400 relay at the 2014

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

Junior World Championships in 2014, while Noah won the 200m at the Youth Olympic Games the same year. They both turned pro after leaving high school, bypassing college to become the first male sprinters to take that quick route. Sadly, injury slowed the progress of Josephus, while big brother Noah beat Bolt’s respective times at 100m and 200m, as he began building a name for himself. His aim now is to overtake the great man in every way, and distance himself from Bolt. “Whatever Usain did was awesome,” he said. “The man ran incredible times. “But I’m going to break these times, and then I’m going to get even bigger than him.” We will know, when the Tokyo Olympics arrive, whether he really is as special as his US followers make out.

Tennis

Injuries force Almagro to retire after 19 years SPAIN’S former world No.9 tennis star Nicolás Almagro has retired after a “marvellous tournament” at the Murcia Challenger Open, in his home city.

“I’m leaving tennis and I want to do it here, at my own Murcia Tennis Club, with my family, my friends, in my city, and at this marvellous tournament,” said the 33-year-old clay-court player. Almagro won his first pro title in Valencia in 2006, three years after turning professional, and finishes on a high note, having collected 13 ATP trophies, two ATP 500 and 11 ATP 250 titles, all on clay. His best year was 2011, when the Spaniard, known as El Bombilla, netted three titles, in Nice (France), Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Costa do Sauipe (Brazil), which elevated him to No.9 in the ATP rankings. Almagro, part of a gilt-edged generation of top-10 Spanish tennis prodigies, including Rafa Nadal, Fernando Verdasco, David Ferrer, Tommy Robredo and Juan Carlos Ferrero, he was never out of the world’s top 15 for four seasons running, from 2010 to 2013. His retirement comes just three short of achieving 400 victories, a total of 278 on the professional circuit. And he also won over $10m (nearly €9m) in prize-

money, although he had failed to win an ATP title since a 2016 victory in Estoril, Portugal. The London 2012 Olympic quarter-finalist and 2005

Mediterranean Games gold medallist has suffered several injuries over those past few years, which impeded his progress and led to his decision to retire.
