Lorry’s open doors hurt woman badly

Mother and son beaten to death! Continued from Front

A BRITISH woman, 53, was transferred by air ambulance to Candelaria University Hospital on Tuesday, after sustaining serious multiple injuries from a freak accident with a lorry in Santiago del Teide. The incident happened just before 2pm, when the lorry’s back doors opened and slammed into her, but it is unclear whether the victim is a tourist or an expat.

A spokesman for the emergency co-ordination centre said: “A medicalised helicopter and support ambulance were mobilised, along with a doctor and a nurse from a local health centre, as well as the Local Police and Guardia Civil.” Strong winds were blamed for a similar accident around the same time near Murcia, in south-eastern Spain.

‘Tenerife? I’d rather finish my jail term!’ A FUGITIVE, aged 64, who had been hiding in Tenerife for 10 years after absconding from an Austrian prison, has told Salzburg police that his “tropical dream island in the Atlantic”, was not as nice as it used to be. The escaped convict appeared at Salzburg’s police station with two suitcases, late in the evening, several hours after landing at Munich Airport. The fugitive, from Lower Austria, informed officers that he had been living, undercover, in Tenerife, but he wanted to return to his homeland as he became older. He told them Tenerife was not as beautiful as it used to be, and that he had lived there long enough.

A police identity check proved that the man had broken out of a jail in his home town of Schwarzau am Steinfeld, 30 miles south of Vienna. And, once the police consulted with a court and the prosecutor’s office, the fugitive was returned to the prison. The man was said to have fled Austria in December 2008, with just six more months of his sentence to serve, although this information, as well as details of his disappearance, has not been confirmed. But it is already clear, according to a police spokesman, that there is no legal punishment for breaking out of prison in Austria, so his return to prison entails no additional penalty.

Punctual thief, who emptied many vans A MAN has been detained in Santa Cruz, charged with committing no fewer than 16 robberies, mainly last month, and usually in the neighbouring town of Ofra! The National Police investigation began because of an alarming rise in victims, reporting that their vehicles had been broken into, and the contents stolen.

The police said the 37-yearold man had been stealing from van-type vehicles. He would smash the door windows to gain entry, then help himself to the contents. Through their probe, officers discovered that the thief had committed a string of similar offences, mostly in March, and, coincidently, all around the same time at night.

He will appear in court today (Friday), but when the officers arrived to detain the 43-yearold at his Adeje house, in Calle Ramon y Cajal, Thomas RH was asleep in bed. He refuses to collaborate with them, and still insists that he didn’t know the whereabouts of his former wife, Silvia, 39, or his elder son, Jacob. And he has stuck to the story since his arrest. Thomas has been living in Adeje for at least three years, and neighbours said that he kept himself to himself, and never became involved with the community. Their five-year-old son, Jonas, who had been with the family on their so-called outing, was found wandering in the mountains, tearful and muddy, by some locals, who alerted police on Tuesday. Tragically, the victims appear to have been beaten to death, and Jonas is quoted as saying that he ran away when his father turned violent in the cave. The boys’ father is lead suspect in the investigation, and officials are treating it as a case of domestic violence. A Guardia spokeswoman told the BBC: “It is a suspected murder.” Thomas and his wife were separated, and she lived in Germany with the two

boys, while he was an Adeje resident. Silvia and their two boys arrived in Tenerife on Monday to visit him, and a day out was planned for the following morning. The family left early on Tuesday, but it seems that it was, in fact, set up by the man for his visitors. It is believed that Thomas took the family to Ifonche in his Volkswagen Caddy. They then went for the walk until he came to the cave, in La Quinta, where the violence took place. The injuries that obviously caused Silvia’s death, as well as those of Jacob, coincided with injuries sustained during a brutal attack. But those injuries also showed signs of people trying to defend themselves. During the commotion, the younger son managed to escape and was found wandering around the mountain in a state of shock; alone, dirty and disoriented. Fortunately, a woman called Rosi told Spanish media that she found Jonas “tired and red-faced”, at around 5pm. She added: “He gripped my hand because he was anxious.” But Rosi, unable to speak German, fetched a friend, who translated the boy’s story. He was trying to speak about a cave, explaining that his father had attacked his mother. He was also saying,

repeatedly, about there being lots of blood. But he had escaped and run away. The hunt for Silvia and her son, made difficult by the mountainous region, and the intense fog in the area, saw 100 people participating. Among them were volunteers, several units of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police, as well as the Spanish Military Union, along with specialist dogs and a helicopter. The cave was actually discovered after a long search, and the clue was a wristwatch, found by a path. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga staged an extraordinary Council meeting yesterday morning (Thursday), announcing two days of official mourning to mark the violent deaths in his borough. It was the only item on the agenda, demonstrating “the utter repugnance of the Council and Adeje people for this kind of violence”. To mark the start of the mourning, the Council held a minute’s silence on the Town Hall steps at midday, and all were welcome. Mayor Fraga said: “The news confirmed our worst fears, and we are all shocked. We are declaring a period of official mourning in the borough today (Friday) and tomorrow. All sporting and cultural activity in will be suspended.”

while pushing her into the door. Throughout the questioning, the officers mentioned marks around her neck, and she confessed that she was nearly strangled by her husband. The officers asked her to report him, as well as seeking medical attention, but the woman refused. However, shortly afterwards, the Guardia Civil arrived with him. When the officers began to

question the 52-year-old, he admitted arguing, but denied hitting her. He had probably caused the marks, he said, while trying to calm her down. The man also told the officers that his partner was crazy and that she had mentalhealth issues. He said she should be given medical attention because she needed medication to calm her down. At this point, the officers arrested him!

Brit tried to strangle wife during loud row A BRITISH man was arrested by Arona’s Local Police in Valle San Lorenzo on Easter Sunday, after trying to strangle his wife in front of their sevenyear-old son.

Neighbours were drawn to the situation after hearing a loud argument between the couple from inside their apartment, in the Cruz de la Guanche area. Once police were told about the disturbance, they soon arrived at the apartment, only to discover the husband had disappeared. Police tackled his 49-yearold British woman, who told them how a discussion turned into something she wasn’t expecting. Her partner began to punch her

La Gomera whistles up starring role at Cannes LA GOMERA will have its name up in lights at Cannes Film Festival next month, thanks to a production focusing on its lost language.

While it has practically died out, the island’s native tongue remains a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and it is about to be revived by Romanian film director

Corneliu Porumboiu. La Gomera, the name of the film and the Canary Island, is unique because its language does not involve any spoken words, and its “speakers” communicate by whistling only. The Cannes début for this tiny island features a police officer, who travels there to learn its whistling language, known as El Silbo (literally, The Whistle).

Other entries are gradually being revealed: Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón, unable to compete last year, will be there this time with his restored version of the Stanley Kubrick 1980 classic, The Shining. An eponymous documentary about Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, directed by Asif Kapadia, will also feature. Terrence Malick, who won the 2011 Palme d’Or, with The

Tree of Life, will be back this year with A Hidden Life, set in World War II. But Cannes’ managing director Thierry Frémaux warns that if Malick is there in person, “he will not be seen by anyone”, because he is said to be most adept at avoiding reporters.

British singer Elton John will also be present. and Frémaux says the organisers will “hide a piano there in case he wants to regale us with his immense talent”, since a film about his life, Rocketman, will be entered, starring Taron Egerton and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Boozy stag passengers forced plane to return Floating wind turbine offers energy solution

A TOURIST travelling to Tenerife on a Ryanair flight last month has become the latest protagonist, regarding the airlines and their rules.

Stuart Leith, a 28-year-old chef from Manchester, was on his way to Tenerife as part of a stag party, when the situation got a little out of hand, The flight was rowdy, it was a Thursday flight back to Tenerife, and the plane was packed with stag and hen parties, itching to celebrate the coming weekend. Travellers had piled loads of booze inside them before boarding, and, said one source, the flight was destined to be long. The situation got out of hand when the cabin crew requested that seat-belts be

fastened before take-off. As the flight steward went down the aisle to doublecheck, she noticed that Stuart Leith’s belt wasn’t fastened. She asked him to oblige, politely, but her colleagues said Leith refused, while insulting the steward in a drunken tone at the same time. That’s when the aircraft did an about-turn and headed back to the departure lounge, where airport police were waiting to board the aircraft, to escort Leith off. The situation was crazy, said one onlooker, because so many people on board were drunk. She said the situation was extremely tense, while another woman has since said she was so anxious on the flight that she requested to be removed from the plane, fearing for

her safety, and that of her children. The woman said she noticed that the passengers climbing onboard were extremely rowdy, so she asked staff what Ryanair’s policy was towards people boarding under the influence. She was assured, quite clearly, that Ryanair had a strict policy concerning people boarding flights under the influence of any drink or drugs. Not this time, though! Leith was taken to the police station inside Manchester airport and questioned by officers, before being allowed on to another Ryanair flight a few hours later, to join his friends in Tenerife. He has since admitted that he had consumed 10 pints of lager before boarding, and agreed that it was an irresponsible way to behave. He was fined 600 euros, as well as court costs.

SPAIN’S initial, twoheaded, floating wind turbine, which has been built in Gran Canaria, is hoped to become the “lowest-cost solution for generating renewable energy in deep water”.

The prototype, dubbed W2Power turbine and unveiled last week at Astique Shipyard, will next month be towed 2.5km out to sea, where it will have a series of tests. It is a 1:6 scale model, generating just 200kW of

power, which will pave the way for enormous future turbines, each generating 10-12MW. An EnerOcean spokesperson said: “The W2Power solution offers greater power generation, without the need to increase the use of steel in the construction of the platform, and, thus, becoming the lowest-cost floating solution for the generation of wind energy in deep waters.” If the prototype is successful, the Malaga-based company envisages a 300MW “marine wind farm”, generating renewable energy, so far enough out at sea by 2025 that it won’t be an eyesore.

Police too smart Veronicas’ punch-up grief for thieving trio

ADEJE’S Local Police, in collaboration with the Guardia Civil, arrested a young man in the early hours of last Sunday, after he was said to have attacked and robbed another individual at a Playa Paraiso casino.

Two other people were believed to have been involved, a man and woman, but both fled the scene during a police chase. The incident happened just before 1am, when the three people entered the building and threatened one of the workers, insisting that he hand over the takings. Another man inside the building, who witnessed the events, tried to intervene, but received a stab wound in his side for his efforts. During the struggle, the knifeman sustained a wound to his hand, which bled quite profusely. This forced the trio of would-be thieves to leave the premises empty-handed. The police were informed and

several Local Police officers, along with the Guardia Civil, were dispatched to the main street in Playa Paraiso. A medical team were also at the scene to assist with any casualties. The Local Police began to follow the blood trail, which began at the casino and ended at the residential apartment block, El Sol Paraiso, just a short distance away. The officers entered the building and searched for the would-be thieves, which ended in a complicated chase. The injured man was found on the main street and arrested immediately. He is from Santa

Cruz and is already familiar with the police, having broken the law several times from a young age, with a string of offences to his record. After being detained by the Local Police, he was handed over to the Guardia Civil, who escorted him to El Mojon hospital to have his wound dressed. He was later taken to the National Police station cells in Las Americas, where he is waiting to see a judge for sentencing. As for the casino victim, he was looked after by the ambulance medics, then taken to Costa Adeje’s Quiron hospital for further treatment.

A BRUTAL fight broke out at a popular nightclub in Veronicas last weekend, involving a group of men, consisting of 15 to 30 individuals.

Most of them involved were London tourists, who had come to Tenerife to enjoy the Easter break. Local employees from surrounding bars heard the

commotion and tried to control the situation as quickly as possible. But witnesses say the brawl got out of hand quickly and was extremely difficult for anyone to gain control… a prime example of the true British hooligan, said another witness. The situation upset many clubbers in the vicinity, and despite appeals for them to stop, the men continued their aggressive attitude.

NEWS IN BRIEF Knife-attacker denies stabbing a taxi driver Pigeons on the pill now A MAN aged 44 has been charged by Local Police in Santa Cruz with attacking a taxi driver on the road heading towards El Rosario, near the Taco Bridge.

PIGEONS in Cadiz are to be fed contraceptive pills to control their population, after a change of mind by the local council. It had planned to ship 5,000 birds to Valencia, but has now said it will install two dispensers, with contraceptive feed. Tourist hotspot Plaza de la Catedral is one of the worstaffected areas, and ecologists estimate that in Cadiz, a city of 115,000, there are some 10,000 pigeons. “It is a good agreement because there is zero sacrifice and no extermination,” said Daniel Lopez, of green group Ecologistas en Accion. He added: “Pigeons are part of the urban habitat and have come to stay. But, in truth, the population is excessive.”

Driver’s drugs…and son!

THE Police Prevention Unit in Arona (UPP) stopped a driver on the road connecting Parque de la Reina to Guaza, carrying nearly 0.3kg of marijuana in his car, and his two-year-old son! The 30-year-old tried his level best to avoid the officers, driving away at high speed, once leaving Guaza and getting on to the TF-1, heading north. The officers finally intercepted the vehicle in the fast lane, and the man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving, crimes against public health and safety, and distributing illegal substances.

North flights diverted South

FOGGY conditions at Tenerife North Airport led to nine flights being diverted to the South Airport on Tuesday. A joint press release from Europa and Aena said it was proving an almost impossible task for flights to land at the airport, which is notorious for its bad weather. The diverted flights comprised one insular flight from Gran Canaria and eight national flights: two each from Madrid and Alicante, with others from Barcelona, Malaga, Seville and Badajoz.

Call for no-smoking beaches

THE General Directorate of Public Health has proposed a scheme to ban smoking from several beaches in the Balearic Islands. All coastal town halls belonging to the islands have been requested, voluntarily, to introduce smoke-free beaches in a bid to reduce the consumption of cigarettes and promote healthy habits. The only beach with a smoking ban in the Balearics so far is Santa Eularia. “The municipalities are invited to convert their beaches, some of them or a part of them, to no-smoking spaces,” said Maria Ramos, head of the directorate. A meeting has been scheduled to take place after the Easter holidays, in which the town halls will be presented with materials such as flyers, brochures and badges, to try to launch the initiative.

The assault took place at around 12.30, in the early hours of Sunday, and the police, who noticed the taxi was zig-zagging suspiciously, followed it into the La Laguna municipality. When the officers waved the cabbie down, they noticed that he was driving with one hand on the wheel and the other one pressed against a severe neck wound. He was trying to stop the blood pouring profusely, and the officers immediately called for medical assistance, applying first-aid to try to stop the haemorrhaging until an ambulance arrived. Meanwhile, the taxi driver told them what had happened. He had been attacked by

a passenger, specifically for his takings. But he had no money because he’d just begun his shift. He told the officers that he had explained this to his attacker, who promptly stabbed him in the neck. The victim was able to give a description of his attacker, as well as where the attack took place. Armed with this information, the two officers requested back-up assistance and began searching the area.

Thanks to the collaboration of witnesses, the policemen were able to find the attacker. But, as they approached him, the man insisted he was not responsible for stabbing the cabbie. The taxi driver was taken to the University Hospital for emergency treatment and, say sources, he was fortunate to survive such an attack, given the area of the entry wound. National Police have taken over the investigation.

Badly-behaved youths hooked on technology A FIFTH of young people in Spain, aged between 10 and 25, suffer behavioural problems, because of their addiction to digital devices. This conclusion is reached in a survey of 4,000 youths, which will be included in the Spanish Health Ministry’s new National Drugs Plan.

The survey found that some 90% of teenagers own between two and five personal video games, mobile phones or other devices. And symptoms of being obsessed with technology include irregular hours, bad sleeping habits, failure to fulfil responsibilities… and even violence! But the “non-substance addiction”, which is not

classed as an illness, does not feature in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM5), compiled by the American Psychiatric Association. Gambling is the only addictive behaviour recognised by the Association, which relates mainly to addiction to substances such alcohol, tobacco, stimulants, marijuana and opiates. Stephen Balkam, who founded the Family Online Safety Institute, advises applying common-sense rather than “demonising” technology, and suggests designating technology-free zones around the house. But a spokesperson from Madrid’s Puerta de Hierro Hospital claims that not everyone becomes hooked on technology, because those who have good social skills, or play sports, are more resistant.

Early morning shock for thief

A MAN aged 30, who already had a police record, was taken by surprise while trying to rob a bar in Arrecife, Lanzarote, during the early hours.

National Police were sent to the premises following a neighbour’s call, reporting that he had seen a person acting suspiciously, and carrying items out from the building, via the security gate, at the back of the bar. When the officers arrived, they saw that the building had been broken into, the slot machine had been smashed up, and the money taken from it. Then, while looking around, the officers also found several tools scattered across the floor, obviously used for the robbery. The officers took a closer look and found the individual crouched behind the bar. The man, who was detained by the officers immediately, has been charged with robbery, as well as forced entry.

Festival’s 40m tree terror

AN Easter celebration in the Catalan village of Tala del arbol de Mayo almost ended in disaster, when a 40-metre tree toppled into a crowd during the festival. The incident occurred as the giant trunk was being cut down in the Cornella del Terri square. But dramatic footage showed the tree swinging towards the crowd instead of the empty space selected. The trunk then crashed on to the ground, shattering into pieces, and narrowly missing two men and a young boy. Crowds ran from the scene in terror, and those present said it was an “Easter miracle” that no one was hurt. Local Mayor Salvador Coll said that the security perimeter would be increased for future events.

Martial arts fighter tangles with police after taxi theft MIXED Martial Arts fighter Darren Till, arrested in Tenerife, along with a four-man group of fellow tourists last Thursday, pleaded guilty in Arona’s Court of Investigation No.4 to trashing a hotel. Till and another member of the group, blamed for initiating the hotel damage, were each fined €478. They also received a €357 penalty each for stealing a taxi, while the five men were also ordered to compensate owners of the damaged hotel with a total of €9,992. They all pleaded guilty to the offences levelled at them. The arrests occurred in

the Costa Adeje area, with controversial Till, who competes in America’s Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), fully involved in both incidents.

Till was stopped by police after jumping in the cab and speeding off, as the driver put their luggage in the boot. The 26-year-old, and others, had been staying at an apartment, where they trashed furniture and emptied fire extinguishers. After being thrown out, they went to another hotel in El Duque, but were turned away. They then ordered a taxi, but when the driver arrived to pick them up and began loading their bags in the boot, Till jumped behind the wheel and drove the gang to La Caleta, where he and his pals were intercepted by National Police officers. The arrests took place in the early hours of last Thursday. Till started his MMA career

with 17 wins and a defeat, earning him a title shot against then champion Tyron Woodley. He lost that showdown, but not before more controversy. Before the fight he angered reporters, saying he had a daughter in Brazil he hadn’t seen in two years, but wasn’t bothered. In 2012, Till was involved in a fight at a party. He was stabbed twice after confronting a group of men, with one wound endangering his life. However, he recovered to continue his career, but it took a severe downturn last month when he suffered a punishing KO by American Jorge Masvidal at UCF London, for his second successive defeat.

Home rentals higher than pre-crisis level HOUSE rents in the country have overtaken pre-crisis levels, says a Bank of Spain report.

renting homes remains low, but is rising gradually. While 14.2% of the population lived in rented properties in 2009, this grew to 17% in 2017. The 16-29 age group is the worst-affected by higher rents, according to the Bank’s survey.

Average earnings between 2008 and 2016 fell by 15% for the 20-24 age group, and 9% for those between 25-29. Neither were employment figures encouraging, although 2013’s jobless rate of

42.4% for the 16-29 age group had fallen to 29.3%. But with soaring rents, their precarious employment prospects were closing the door for many young people, warned the Bank of Spain.

Trio of beach deaths hits Canarian Easter

THREE people died on Canarian beaches during the Easter holiday, between 12th-21st April, and all within 1,500km of the coastline. In addition, three women, a man and three minors, who had trouble in swimming pools, all needed medical assistance over the last couple of weeks. One woman is still in hospital, in a critical condition, In total, across the archipelago, 10 people suffered water mishaps during the Easter holidays,

five of whom were female, which, according to statistics, is unusual. Statistics show that every eight from 10 water incidents are sparked by males. Tenerife reported the majority of water incidents, with five accidents reported and two deaths, while Lanzarote was the island where the third person died. The other incidents reported involved three people from Fuerteventura, and one from Gran Canaria.

Another almighty hit for La Pasión as crowds pour in

9 CW

Marcos shares his sadness after horrific day at beach

ADEJE’S Calle Grande in Adeje was again overwhelmed by Good Friday’s dramatisation of “La Pasión”, with hundreds of local people taking part in the annual event, depicting the last days and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The streets were also full to bursting with visitors and regulars following the action, and the events were broadcast life on television and social media. More than 200 people took on the roles of the Jerusalem people, and the main protagonists in this theatrical representation. And, somewhat unusually, the weather favoured the actors with some cloud in the sky, allowing relief from the kind of heat the public and the cast have suffered from in previous years. Adeje Mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, congratulated all those who took part, including the 100plus people who worked on direction, production, stage-building, costumes,

communication, props etc. “Everyone involved played his/her part in making this possible, and my congratulations and thanks go to all for converting this into one of the most important Easter events in Adeje,” he said. “Every year, more and more people get involved, and, every year we learn and improve, renewing and incorporating changes into the overall production.” Under the direction of Laura Marrero, and through Adeje’s Culture Department, this has become one of the most eagerly-awaited productions of the year. Culture Councillor Adolfo

Alonso Ferrera, expressed his huge satisfaction with the spectacular production. He was also happy to report that the entire show went off without a hitch, and neither were there any security problems! Adeje’s evolution of “La Pasión” began in 1996 when, through structural issues, the normal, dramatic Easter celebrations had to move out to the street from the Santa Ursula church. “Taking the presentation on to the Calle Grande was circumstantial, but it has now grown into the important event it is today,” said proud Mayor Rodríguez Fraga. Photos: Phil Crean

MARCOS Alonso, having spent Easter Saturday with the news surrounding environmental pollution and marine life in danger, has written emotional text which has now gone viral. He was out with friends in Gran Canaria, enjoying the day, when it became shrouded in sadness, and no wonder! It was a day of realisation for him, having witnessed a dead, stranded dolphin, a turtle in trouble and a dead Shearwater sea bird, as well as plastic items, comprising enough containers, bags and bottle tops to fill five bags. Some of the plastic was identified by bar codes, drifting in from other countries such as Egypt, Turkey and Morocco. Alonso had to write it all down, and here’s the text, which has now gone viral: “Today, while enjoying the company of friends, along with home-made paella at the Boca Barranco beach, we went for a short walk, and, while I looked up to see the spectacular blue from the sea, I realised the sky was a much darker blue, for some unknown reason. “As we were returning from our walk, we observed a group of people, accompanied by a local policeman. They were standing near the shore, and we were shocked by what we saw: the stranded dolphin, bleeding from its mouth with its jaw completely broken, and a huge gash on the side of its body. The injuries were probably caused through an accident with a boat. “At the same time, other people witnessed a sea turtle tangled in fishing nets, attached to a buoy. But, thanks to the heroic act of a local, the turtle was saved.

He jumped into the sea with the help of a lifeguard, and, together, detached the buoy. “They bought it to the shore, where they untangled the poor animal. The turtle had suffered deep wounds from where the netting had dug into its legs. For how long, though, God only knows! “The turtle was taken to a recovery, wild-life centre, and fortunately, this animal was saved, but the poor dolphin, not! “After the meal, moved by what we had witnessed, we decided to do the rounds and collect some plastic from the beach as an act of awareness. “We managed to fill five bags, but that was only the beginning. We then came across a dead shearwater, with a piece of something through its neck. NO COMMENT! “Three pieces of plastic we collected on the beach caught our attention, because of their labels. And, based on the bar codes, we were able to tell where the plastic originated: from Turkey, white spray powder; Egypt, butter packaging, as well as fly-spray, along with water caps from Morocco.

The Guardia Civil, based in Gran Canaria’s Mogan, Puerto Rico, arrested a 25-year-old man last Friday night, charging him with possession of drugs and intent to sell. The officers noticed the man acting suspiciously, so they proceeded to carry out

a stop-and-search. While conducting the search, officers found a small plastic bag, containing 45 ecstasy pills, which were hidden in his pockets. The man, the pills and a report from the Guardia Civil have been presented to the courts.

No chance of ecstasy!

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

A cheeky evening at The Pier! By John Zammit

THE seventh heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, sponsored by The Duke Shops, Costa Adeje, headed to Torviscas this week, giving another two people the opportunity of progressing into the semi-finals, and the chance of winning €1000 and performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards.

For the second time this year, Tenerife Loves Karaoke was hosted in another new venue, The Original Wigan Pier, Torviscas. As in the previous heats, The Original Wigan Pier provided us with a variety of performers, including not one, but two, duo acts. With a slightly-delayed start, because of the football, host Kerry Railton got proceedings underway with our first duo, Alice and Emily, singing the classic The Cheeky Song. This was one of the funniest performances I have ever seen at a TLK heat. Well done girls!

Then came Christopher Walken’s I Wanna Be Like You, followed by 81-year-old Earle, belting out the Frank Sinatra classic, My Way. If the audience weren’t smiling before, they were now. Our second duo took to the stage and sang Need You Now by Lady Antebellum,

and, as with all the contestants, they were given great applause. This was followed by Jane performing Build Me Up Buttercup, and, last but not least, we had a version of Peter Andre’s Mysterious Girl, to take us to the break. After the interval, we started

as we had left the first half, on a high, thanks to a brilliantlyperformed version of what seems to be this year’s most popular TLK song, Penny Arcade. Brian and Sharon took to the stage next, and sang a lovely number, It’s Cold Outside, and were followed

by a performance of Help Me Make It Through the Night. Sam was next with Molly’s Chambers by Kings of Leon, then came a great version of Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time. Our final song of the evening was from Faby, Every Breath You Take, by The Police. Everyone sang brilliantly, and gave everyone at the The Original Wigan Pier a funfilled night. However, two contestants needed to be put through to the semi finals, and it was confirmed that they would be Earle and Sam, each receiving their heat trophies. We would like to thank everyone who entered at The Original Wigan Pier, and the owners and staff who made this, once again, another memorable heat. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke is on Tuesday 30th April at The Theatre Bar, San Eugenio, Costa Adeje. If you would like to enter this heat, to be in a chance of winning €1000 and performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, please call 822 14 15 17, or you can register at the venue. Don’t forget - you have to sing it to win it!

SPAIN’S population has broken the 47m barrier again for the first time since 2013, and the numbers of foreigners are increasing, with Brits totalling nearly 250,000.

The annual data, provided by the National Institute of Statistics, based on the census at 1st January this year, has just been published. It reveals that 8.9m people in Spain are aged over 65, the youngest foreigners are from Hondurás and the oldest are from the UK. Distribution by sexes, 49% men and 51% women, hasn’t changed, but the country as a whole is getting older: just 15.7% are under 16, while over one-third, or 36.3%, are aged between

Spain population over 47m again, thanks to British 16-44. Another 28.7% are 4564 and the over-65s make up 19.3%. While foreigners account for just over 10.7%, or around five million, a growing number were born in Spain. And the total figure for those born abroad, whether Spanish or foreign, is 14.3%. The average age of a person living in Spain is 43, and onethird of Spanish nationals, 34.1%, are in the 16-44 age bracket, while 55% of non-

Cabildo backing the revised ferry routes

Spaniards fall within this range. Spaniards are slightly older than the national mean figure, with an average age of 44, while the average age of a foreign resident across the board is 36, and 40 for an EU expat. Citizens of Hondurás are the youngest migrant group, with an average age of 30.3 years, followed by those from Pakistan (30.9) and from Morocco (31).

British nationals living in Spain are the oldest, with an average age of 53.6, followed by the Germans (49.2) and the French (42.6). Moroccans continue to be the largest national group of non-Spaniards, totalling 812,412, followed by Romanians (669,434), and Brits (249,015). Italians (227,912), Chinese (224,372) and Colombians (206,413) complete the top six.

Although the cost of using the fast ferry will be increased, the route change is being made to protect the marine wildlife, living in Canarian waters. The idea was put forward after a series of events, featuring the appearance of dead whales and dolphins, all brutally injured and washed-up across the Canarian coastlines. Evidence showed that they had been involved in deadly accidents, involving large boats. The majority of them showed signs of being injured by large propellers on recreational boats, as well as the fast ferries. A press release was published on Wednesday

by Alberto Bernabe, spokesman for the Travel and Tourism Council. They now have confirmation that the fastferries’ route between La Gomera and Tenerife interferes with where the whales and dolphins reside. He says the animals will not change where they live, so we have to do what is needed, by changing routes. True, the cost will rise, but the change it is necessary and worthwhile to all. Meanwhile, licences for the whale-and-dolphin excursions are to be revised. In the last study, there had been a 112% increase in a short time, and, at the moment, there are 77 legal businesses dedicated to this type of excursion in Tenerife South alone. But there are still dozens of boats offering this excursion illegally.

The national group expanding the most in the past year are the Venezuelans, but they still account for just 41,956 inhabitants. Yet their headcount has risen by 43.9%, through soaring numbers of expats and asylum-seekers, heading to the mother country to escape the deepening, political crisis at home. The population has grown in all except four of Spain’s autonomously-governed regions: in Extremadura, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Galicia, resident numbers have gone down. Foreigner numbers either grew or remained the same in all 17 regions, but they were reduced in the Spanishowned, city-provinces of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast, although in terms of the country as a whole, Melilla has the second-largest foreigner ratio, at 15.3%.

Female soldier didn’t mean to ‘glass’ friend A BRITISH squaddie, who “glassed” her soldier friend in the throat after a heated nightclub row and was arrested, has been released after claiming it was “accidental”.

Squaddie Sydney Cole, 19, got into a fight with her “best friend”, 22-year-old soldier Sarah Garrity, in the popular Bananas nightclub, on Magaluf’s Punta Ballena strip. Londoner Cole told a Palma judge that a glass she threw on the floor broke, and a shard pierced Garrity’s neck. “It was an accident,” she said. “Sarah and I were very drunk because we had been drinking since 11am on Monday, but I didn’t want to cut her throat.” Scottish-born Garrity lost a lot of blood and collapsed outside the club, before being rushed to an intensive care unit at Palma’s Son Espases Hospital. Holiday-maker Alice Gascoigne, 18, from Coventry, told The Sun Online: “Everyone was screaming; there was so much blood. She came out the club and she was holding her neck. She had a white top on and it was literally covered in red. Then she passed out and had a fit.” Cole was released by police after her “best pal” decided not to press charges, but she could still be prosecuted if authorities

decide to press charges. Royal Logistics Corps clerk Garrity said: “I’m alive and that’s all that matters.” An Army spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident involving two off-duty soldiers in Spain.” Garrity said on social media the day after she was wounded: “I cannot respond to all the messages from wellwishers, but I am alive, and that’s all that matters!” Police sources said the two were friends, and social media posts show the pair together on several occasions.

JUAN LUIS HERNANDEZ President - Movimiento Del Pueblo

When and why was Movimiento Del Pueblo born?

The idea was born one year ago, but became a reality in October 2018 when the party was established. It is a transition from the Social Partnership ´Movimiento para el Pueblo´ and has been very clear to us that nice words give no solutions and demands to improve the Island fell on deaf ears. We decided that the time is now to act ourselves.

What are your principle demands to improve the islanders quality of life?

· Heatlth – Hospitals in the North and South are a priority to improve facilities and the availability of care without the necessity to travel to help the elderly and young families. · Housing – To improve the amount of social housing in touristic areas for workers as the political power has only

focused on tourism and have forgotten the basic need for housing. · Small Businesses – Policies need to change to help lifelong family businesses to survive as they are disappearing from our Island

due to more support given to larger companies ie. Hotels with all inclusive packages and shopping centres. · Traffic – Horrendous traffic jams on our highways and local roads continue which gives commuters chaos. As

well as lack of parking in towns and touristic areas needs to be resolved. · Education – We need more involvement in the younger generations education in order to avoid social exclusion and achieve a

better integration to working life.

Has the lack of solutions been the reason why ´Movimiento del Pueblo´became a political party?

Of course! The citizens are tired of listening to the same lies every 4 years during election time. Our party is looking to regenerate the politics in this Island, we have no political colour, we only work for political transparency and to serve the people and the needs of the Island. Movimiento del Pueblo does not receive any subsides from the State, Companies, or Banks, we wish not to receive them either. We believe that all parties must lower their ego and their salaries – it should be an honour being a politician in this Island not a business. We are not going to change the world, but our objective is to the improve the Island where we live.

The Rock is taking care of its monkeys

GIBRALTAR is installing 17 speed bumps on the Rock to protect its monkeys, covering roads on the upper part of the peninsula as traffic-calmers. They will also help cut the danger to visitors and wildlife. A Government spokesperson said the measures protect the most vulnerable species in the area, including baby macaque monkeys, partridge chicks and rabbits.

He added: “Despite this, drivers are urged to take care on the Upper Rock and drive slowly.” The new traffic initiative is one of a series of wide-ranging, “green” improvements across the Rock. Also included is the clearing of dense scrub, to be replaced by open habitats, which should promote a richer biodiversity of animal and plant species. In fact, the Government has begun planting dozens of trees, including tamarisks near Little Bay, and two eucalyptus outside Gibraltar Parliament.

Stunned Brit given €400 he left in an ATM

A BRITISH pensioner has praised a local Spaniard for handing him the €400 he had, unwittingly, left hanging out of a cash machine.

Alistair Thomson, 72, was taken aback when, after thinking he had cancelled his transaction in Estepona, a local man tapped him on the shoulder and handed him hundreds of euros. “When the exchange rate for the British Pound came up on the screen, I decided to cancel the transaction because the rate was poor,” said the Cheshireborn man. “I then walked into the main part of the Carrefour, when a Spanish gentleman tapped me on the shoulder and handed me €400. “I realised I must have pressed the “proceed” button, rather than the cancel button, retrieved my card and just walked off. “The Spanish gentleman was in some corporate work clothes, and I think it was a petrol station. “He accepted a token of my appreciation, reluctantly, and I just wanted to share this lovely episode with everyone. Viva España!”

A FORMER US marine has been arrested in connection with an attack on Madrid’s North Korean Embassy.

Christopher Ahn was arrested in Los Angeles and charged by US authorities, after a mysterious dissident group broke into the Embassy and assaulted staff. Police in Spain identified Ahn as a suspect, and an international arrest warrant was issued for his arrest. But Lee Wolosky, a lawyer for Mr Ahn, said: “We are dismayed that the US Department of Justice has decided to execute warrants against US persons,

that derive from criminal complaints filed by the North Korean regime. “We have received no assurances from the US Government about the safety and security of the US nationals it is now targeting.” An anti-DPRK group claimed its members were responsible for the attack, and a Spanish judge has said the investigation uncovered evidence that “a criminal organisation” tied and gagged embassy staff, before escaping with computers, hard drives and documents. This admission came after the secretive opposition group, “Free Joseon” took responsibility for the breakin, but claimed it was not an “attack”.

Brexit delay fails to reverse the pound’s losses

This has seen GBP/EUR slip from €1.16 to €1.15, and pushed EUR/GBP up nearer to £0.87. Meanwhile, GBP/ USD has fallen back from $1.30 to $1.29, while EUR/ USD was left at $1.12, despite briefly reaching $1.13.

Although the UK may have avoided a no-deal Brexit, this month, the prospect of another six months of uncertainty, and some mixed UK data, has left the pound on the defensive. In the meantime, trade in

the euro has been mixed, in the past couple of weeks, with the single currency relinquishing its initial gains, after some gloomy Eurozone PMI figures stoked fears the bloc could face a recession, this year. At the same time, after initially being clipped by improved risk appetite, the US dollar leapt back to life in mid-April, on the back of some robust, US, economic data. While Brexit will remain a priority for GBP investors, expect to see sterling increasingly influenced by UK economic data in the coming weeks, as the immediate threat of the UK crashing out of the UK fades. In addition to the latest Eurozone data, the euro is

immigrants reached Spanish shores, which was more than double the 2017 figure. And there are five million foreign nationals registered on local rolls, down 700,000 from a decade ago. Gender issues Despite calls by the Vox party to repeal gender violence legislation, this is not likely to happen. Both of its probable allies, PP and Ciudadanos, which defend the law, even want to take it further by addressing the persisting issue of the salary gap between men and women. The PSOE and Podemos will seek additional legislation to defend the rights of LGTBI groups, and the latter has established a four-year goal to achieve gender parity in public institutions, such as the Cabinet or the Supreme Court. The two parties also want to reform criminal legislation. following a high-profile, sexual assault case known as La Manada. Taxes The highest earners, large companies and banks will pay more taxes if there is a leftist government. The PSOE has yet to detail its tax reform proposals, but it has announced new taxes on financial transactions and digital services, as well as a higher income-tax rate for the wealthy. The PP, on the other hand, has pledged to lower the highest tax rate from 45% to 40%, bring corporate tax below 20%, and eliminate inheritance tax, estate tax and a levy on home

purchases, known as AJD. Ciudadanos would reduce the highest tax rate slightly, from 45% to 44%, act against corporate tax deductions and eliminate inheritance tax. And Vox has pledged similar moves. These parties claim that the loss in tax revenues would be offset by an increase in economic activity, leading to greater collection on existing taxes. Pensions Last year, Spain spent over €144bn on 9.7 million pension payments. In 2010, a legal reform raised the retirement age to 67, and in 2014, a new calculation method was introduced, which no longer ensured purchasing power for pensioners. The measures were aimed at helping to reduce the system’s deficit, but they failed. Despite a considerable increase in jobs over the last four years, contributions to social security have not made up for a gap, which grows by around €18bn each year. And a surplus of €60bn has been used up. Parties are aware of this problem, but they don’t have any clear solutions. For now, all they are offering are vague pledges, which include the words “reform” and “sustainability”. Unidas Podemos does suggest one specific measure: making the highest earners pay more into the system! Employment There are two fundamentallyopposed views. The right supports measures that reduce

workers’ rights and make firing cheaper (the PP proposes “going further with the progress on market flexibility, achieved in 2012”). The left wants to repeal parts of that reform to reinforce workers’ rights. Nearly all parties are offering self-employed workers better conditions through tax breaks and subsidies for business creation. And they agree on the need for more open-ended contracts. Additionally, most political leaders agree on the need to equate the maternity and paternity leave. Immigration There was a 130% rise in irregular migrant arrivals last year, representing nearly 60,000 people. There are five million foreign nationals registered on the padrón), a 700,000 drop from a decade ago. The economic crisis reduced the migratory pressure on Spain, but the recovery has seen a new spike in arrivals. The PP supports fighting smugglers, reinforcing security measures at the southern borders, and expanding international treaties for repatriation of irregular migrants. Venezuelans are the exception, as they will be granted residency permits. The PSOE defends “facilitating orderly migration flows, while showing maximum respect for human rights,” while Podemos wants to shut down migrant holding centres (CIE), issue “humanitarian visas” and relax family reunification procedures. spectrum, Vox wants to “deport illegal immigrants” as well as “legal immigrants who have committed a serious crime, or reoffended on minor crimes”. This party also wants to build “an insurmountable wall” in the Spanish exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla, on the northern coast of Africa. Depopulation The political fragmentation means that the near-100 seats being contested in 19 highlydepopulated provinces will be key to forming governing majorities. This is why parties are embracing rural Spain like never before, promising more and better services in health-care, tax incentives, high-speed internet access, police, tourism plans and more. Clean energy All parties, with varying degrees of enthusiasm, support a transition to cleaner-energy systems, and a reduction of CO2 emissions. The PSOE wants 74% of electricity consumption in 2030 to come from renewable sources, and a shutdown of nuclear power plants between 2025 and 2035. Podemos wants 100% renewable energy by 2040, and wants to eliminate nuclear power by 2024. Vox is promising a plan to make Spain “selfsufficient” through “cheap, sustainable, efficient and clean” energy. The PP defends an “energy mix”, which will guarantee supply, and reasonable energy prices.

The General Election, and how parties view Spain’s major issues

AHEAD of the General Election on 28th April, here is a summary of where each group stands on issues such as taxation, immigration, employment and clean energy. On Sunday, 28th April, Spaniards will go to the polls in a snap, national election, triggered by a deadlock over the 2019 budget. Whichever government emerges from the vote will have to deal with this, and other longstanding economic issues, such as persistently high unemployment, ballooning debt and how to finance the pensions system with an ageing population. And on the political front, immigration and the Catalan crisis will continue to shape the national agenda. Spain has a population of 47 million, comprising19m workers and 3.6m people out of a job, which is two million fewer than five years ago. And there are 10 million people living under the poverty threshold. It also has the world’s thirdhighest life expectancy, after Japan and Switzerland. The state spends €9.7m a year on pensions, which is less than what it makes to cover that expense. In fact, the state has been collecting under what it spends for years, and the debt has ballooned to over one trillion euros, leading to financial costs that keep eroding the budget. Tax collection, in the meantime, has returned to 2009 levels. Last year, 60,000 irregular

London Marathon

Sunday 28th April, BBC2, 08.30

Wednesday 1st May, ITV1, 21.00

Gabby Logan presents live coverage of the start of the 39th London Marathon, one of the best days of the British sporting year. More than 40,000 people will run the 26.2 miles, coming from all abilities, ages and backgrounds. Last year’s runners helped raise a staggering £63.7m for charity. The men’s elite field contains Great Britain’s Olympic legend Sir Mo Farah, aiming to win the race for the first time but he will be up against arguably the greatest marathon runner of all time in world record holder Eliud Kipchoge. The women’s race is set to be fiercely contested as three-time winner Mary Keitany aims to dethrone defending champion Vivian Cheruiyot. Wheelchair athlete David Weir competes for an incredible 20th time, aiming to extend his record number of victories to nine. Reporting along the 26.2 mile route will be Radzi Chinyanganya, Jeanette Kwakye, Steve Brown and JJ Chalmers while commentary comes from Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter, six-time London Marathon wheelchair race winner Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Paula Radcliffe - who herself set the women’s marathon world record 16 years ago.

In the first episode, twin doctors, Chris and Xand van Tulleken, are inspired by the freedom given to children in other countries. Like six-year-old Michi from Japan, who commutes alone across Tokyo to get to school, and seven-year-old Uuakhuike, from the Himba tribe in Namibia, who uses a machete to gather firewood for his family. Michi, who lives in a one-bedroomed apartment with his parents and three siblings, travels across Tokyo by bus, train and foot, battling commuters to get to school. His mum says: “In Japan we have a saying, ‘Let your beloved child go on a journey.’ To go out on your own is the first step towards independence.” His dad says: “I worry about strangers approaching him. If he doesn’t get off at the right stop.” In Namibia, seven-year-old Uuakhuike, who is part of the Himba tribe and lives with his dad, mum, his dad’s second wife and six brothers and sisters, is seen leaving the village to gather firewood. In the Himba tribe, children as young as three are taught how to use a machete. Uuakhuike, and his fiveyear-old brother walk miles from the safety of their village in search of firewood always keeping alert to dangers such as wild dogs and elephants. With British kids now spending less time outdoors than prison inmates and being heavily supervised most of the time, the doctors create a test of independence for their British Planet Child kids. To see if a group of 4-7 year olds can cross London without their parents, using London transport and take a trip on the London Eye. Kieran, aged five, and five-year-old cousin Rita live on a farm in the Yorkshire Dales. Whilst they enjoy lots of freedom on the farm and the surrounding land, they have little experience of life outside Yorkshire. Leo, seven, and his sisters Abi, five, and Harleigh, four, live with their mum, Claire, in Margate, Kent. The girls tell the programme that they have never been more than a metre away from their mum by themselves. Claire says: “It’s a bit worrying handing them over. I’ve never let them get a bus by themselves.” Seven-year-old twins Judah and Darcee live with their parents Tim and Rebecca, and twin brothers in Sussex. Ahead of their trip to London, Rebecca says: “There are times that I’m just not sure that they are savvy enough to push those boundaries themselves. So I need to put that boundary in place. I’ve got separation anxiety I think. It’s a really big deal, it’s London and they’re really little. ‘ Chris and Xand meet the children in a park in London and give each group a map and the instruction that they must find their way out of the park, via the souvenir shop, and to the correct bus stop, where they must catch the right bus to the London Eye. The special buses are fitted with hidden cameras, and chaperones are around the park and onboard the buses to observe the children, with camera operators keeping a distance meaning that the children are otherwise on their own. Chris and Xand tell Planet Child that, throughout their bus journey, the London Eye will come in and out of the children’s vision. Will they hold their nerve and stay on for the right stop? Or will they be tempted to get off too soon and risk getting lost?

The Looming Tower Friday 26th April, BBC2, 21.30

Based on Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning non-fiction book, The Looming Tower tells the story of the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda in the late 1990s, and how the rivalry between the FBI and CIA during that time may have inadvertently set the path for the tragedy of 9/11. Episode one: Now It Begins 1998. A seized al-Qaeda computer drive reaches 'Alec Station' in CIA HQ, Langley, Virginia. The coldly calculating, cardigan-wearing section chief Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard) keeps its contents from the FBI, where his New Yorkbased counter-terrorism counterpart is brash, suited and booted John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels). Determined not to be sidelined, O’Neill has recruited rookie agent Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim), an Arabic-speaking Muslim (albeit one with a taste for alcohol) to aid his team, while well-seasoned Bob Chesney (Bill Camp) heads to Nairobi, Kenya. Soufan recognises that a TV interview given by ‘UBL’ [Usama bin Laden - sic] is a final warning before retribution against the US is unleashed. Bob Chesney visits a man who used to work for ‘UBL’ and nets an old computer through at the American Embassy in Nairobi, where flirtatious Deb Fletcher (Leslie Silva) works. Clues suggest an al-Qaeda cell is gearing up in Tirana, Albania, and O’Neill pushes National Security co-ordinator Richard Clarke (Michael Stuhlbarg) to both confirm the CIA is launching a raid there and push to let Soufan join the mission. Dragged away from a date with teacher Heather (Ella Rae Peck), the young agent is whisked off to a dangerous situation in the Balkan state. In Africa another two terrorist cells are able to finish prepping for destructive, bloody action…

Your Home Made Perfect

Save Money: Lose Weight

Thirty six year-old Suzanne and 41 year-old Danny have wildly differing views on how to improve their cramped 1960s bungalow in Bedfordshire. With three children and only two usable bedrooms, they’re in urgent need of help - but while Suzanne wants style and a wow factor, Danny is fixated on storage and practicality. With the couple at loggerheads, architects Laura Jane Clark and Robert Jamison go head to head to win the commission. The prize? To radically transform this dysfunctional space into a spectacular and practical home, all working to their £70k budget. The two experts work up two very different solutions to this ambitious brief. Then, using the latest technology, Danny and Suzanne will step into the designs in state-of-the-art virtual reality. They begin in their existing home and watch in awe as their furniture disappears, plaster peels back, walls fall away and new structures build - before the final vision is revealed like never before. Laura creates an ingenious design which turns the once ordinary home into one that is extraordinary. Her clever scheme solves a major problem present in most bungalows: they are dark at the centre of the home. A gigantic skylight lets light pour in and a stunning low cost kitchen is created by adapting an off-the-peg one with laser-cut brass panels. Next is Robert’s design, which is hardly recognisable as Suzanne and Danny’s old home. Small rooms have been transformed into an enormous open-plan space constructed using industrial materials and translucent wall panels. The most radical idea however is replacing their traditional bedrooms with Japanese–style ‘sleep pods’. The conflicting couple must now agree which of the two amazing virtual creations to build in reality. Months after the builders move in, Angela and the chosen architect travel for the final and most important reveal of all. It might look like the same bungalow from the outside, but what a transformation! A stunning interpretation of the virtual designs has translated into an extraordinary home.

Our Dementia Choir With Vicky McClure Thursday 2nd May, BBC1, 20.00

In this new two-part series for BBC One, co-produced by the Open University, BAFTA-award winning actor Vicky McClure takes us on a deeply personal journey to discover the true extent of music’s power in fighting dementia. Joining forces with the University of Nottingham and University College London, and specialists from the fields of medicine, music therapy and performance she is forming a very special choir who will rehearse together to put on one unforgettable performance. Vicky has close personal experience of dementia, through caring for her Nana Iris, who died in 2015. During that period, and through her role with the Alzheimer’s Society, Vicky has seen first-hand how music and singing had affected dementia patients and those who love and care for them. Now, Vicky aims to spread the word on a much bigger scale. In this series she’ll meet the scientists exploring pioneering techniques and cutting edge scanning technology in order to reveal how music can stimulate a brain damaged by dementia. And, bringing her choir together, in just three months they’ll put on the biggest show of their lives with the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy in our understanding of how music therapy can help people with dementia.

Miriam Margolyes confronts her fear of ageing and death to tackle our greatest taboo - our own mortality. She’s already met people who reject death - but what if you have no choice but to confront it? In the concluding episode of Miriam’s Dead Good Adventure, Miriam wants to know if we can ever be ready to meet death. Miriam is keen to meet people who talk openly and frankly about the reality of dying. Miriam meets Tracy, who is living with terminal ovarian cancer. Miriam helps Tracy plan her wake and learns that knowing when you are going to die allows time to prepare for death. Tracy’s forthright approach to dealing with cancer strikes a chord with Miriam. If you’re going to try and prepare for death, she concludes, maybe it helps to take matters into your own hands? Miriam joins Coffin Club, a monthly meet-up for people seeking emotional and practical support while facing death. Miriam builds her own flat-pack coffin and paints it with her own unique design. By facing the future, Miriam realises that our end of days doesn’t have to be as scary as she feared. However, many still struggle to confront their fear of dying. In San Francisco, Miriam meets Dr Phil Wolfson, a pioneer in hallucinogenic psychotherapy. He treats his patients’ anxiety about death with Ketamine, a horse tranquiliser and recreational party drug which is illegal unless administered by a doctor. Dr Phil believes that end-of-life anxieties can be reduced with the drug. For some, preparing for death means controlling how and when it will happen. Miriam meets Dr Philip Nitschke in Amsterdam, who runs the controversial right to die movement, Exit International. He believes all rational people over 50 to have the legal right to end their lives. In his laboratory, Dr Nitschke demonstrates a prototype suicide pod called Sarco. Miriam hears his plans to share his invention, which he sees as a peaceful way for people to take control of their deaths. Finally, Miriam meets Tyreese, an 18 yearold rapper with bowel and liver cancer. He is determined to fight his illness and refuses to consider preparing for death. Miriam recites a heartfelt rap Tyreese has written about his illness. As an aspiring footballer before he became ill, Tyreese takes Miriam to watch a local game. She realises that it’s Tyreese’s positivity that allows him to cling on to hope.

Let us entertain you, and spice up your Saturday night!

Tony Lewis as Robbie: For the past decade, Tony Lewis has been wowing audiences, worldwide, with his amazing portrayal of Britain’s Greatest Entertainer, Robbie Williams! After making his debut in Trevor Chance’s Legends, Tony has gone on to perform across

the globe, leaving audiences constantly gagging for more! He turns heads wherever he goes, leaving onlookers asking: “Is it, or isn’t it?” In 2005, Tony was lucky enough to meet Robbie in person, chatting about women, music, and, most importantly, football, even gaining his idol’s

approval with Robbie saying: “I think it’s great. I’m really flattered! It’s bloody hard work, being me!” In 2008, Tony beat all his “Robbie” competition, landing a spot on BBC 1’s The One And Only, and performing in front of seven million viewers, for six consecutive weeks,

eventually bowing out in the final to Dusty Springfield! The resemblance is so uncanny that Tony has appeared in numerous promotional campaigns and TV shows throughout Europe. But the highlight must be playing Robbie in a series of official short films for the album,

Rudebox. The looks, the moves, the voice, the ego! This show has it all! Tony is Robbie Williams! He started working with ‘Rule The World’ on their theatre tour, back in 2010, and has been a valued and much-loved addition to the ‘Take That’ show!

Meet Tony Lewis, the World’s number 1 Robbie Williams tribute act Robbie Williams tribute act and lookalike, Tony Lewis, has toured the planet for almost 15 years, and is one of the most successful and busiest tribute acts in the business. Here, he answers a few, quick questions!

Canarian Weekly: What made you decide to become a tribute act? Tony Lewis: If I’m totally honest, it was a total fluke! I was on our annual football trip to Blackpool, and a few of the lads thought it would be a good idea to get me up on the karaoke. They knew I liked to blast out a bit of Robbie, and a few people had said I looked like him. Unbeknown to me, the karaoke was actually a competition that I ended up winning! An agent spotted me, and the rest, as they say, is history! The host that day, Joey Blower, has remained one of my closest friends, and is always there to advise me in different aspects of my life! I suppose the more romantic side of me would call it destiny or fate! Whatever it was, it helped shaped my life forever! CW: Were you a fan of the act, before you became a tribute to them? TL: I was a huge Robbie Williams fan, and have been to watch every tour he’s done. I couldn’t help but be drawn to his character; the cheeky chappy, showing off and having that interaction with the crowd! That, along with his music, made me a fan from the start! CW: Why should people watch a tribute act, when they can see the real thing? TL: I don’t think everyone can see the real thing! Restrictions, such as finances, travel, schedule and capacity, can easily limit a fan’s ability to follow his or her idols! Either way, a tribute act brings a totally different aspect to show business! Let’s get it

right; there’s only one Robbie Williams, but I’d like to think I portray a different angle to a RW gig. It is, indeed, cheaper to watch me, but it also gives the audience a chance to get closer to the show. Whether it be me, Robbie Williams, or anybody else lucky enough to be blessed in this business, entertainment will always be just that, regardless of the level! CW: What is your favourite song to perform, and why? TL: I could never choose just one song! Different moods give you different emotions and song choice! I love coming on to Let Me Entertain You, and I’ll often listen to a live version in the gym, to help me through that final mile or rep! My favourite Robbie Williams song is Come Undone, but I always feel like I need my live band behind it, to do it justice! Whichever song I’m singing, I’m so lucky because I never get bored with performing them! If I weren’t so busy singing them, then I’d be listening to them on my iPod! CW: What has been your favourite gig so far, and why? TL: Like the song question, there isn’t one, standout gig - more like a combination

of different performances! I once did three gigs in one day, in Holland, and wondered how I was going to get through the final show! As I walked out on stage, 15,000 Dutch people went crazy, and it was one of the best feelings, ever! I’ve sung on the top deck of one of the biggest cruise liners, in the middle of the Caribbean, under the moon and the stars, and stuff like that really blows your mind! Ultimately, having a live band will always take things

up a notch, and, when I did a swing gig with my 18-piece orchestra, there were moments when I was close to tears (happy ones), with them backing me. CW: Any funny stories? TL: Too many to mention. The lookalike gigs are always the strangest, because you can cause scenarios that are so bizarre! I was once sitting on David Beckham’s knee, while George Michael gave us a lap dance. Sharon Stone sat, uncrossing her legs, in the corner, and Jack Nicholson was drinking red wine, splitting his sides with laughter … and, all the time, Freddie Mercury was filming it! CW: Why do you think you’re one of the most successful acts? TL: I think it’s because I was, and still am, a huge Robbie Williams fan, and I always want to do justice to him. I’m also someone who sacrifices my own personal needs, onstage, for the crowd, doing

things they want to do, rather than me singing a full set of album tracks. That would work for some of the hardcore fans, but you’ve got to appeal to the masses, even the nonRobbie fans (yes, they do exist), who come along to support a venue, function or event! I suppose, with Robbie, he ticks lots of boxes and is a great entertainment package! I can sing, move, and, I am told, I look like him, so, while RW is the man, I’m a pretty close (albeit budget) second! CW: Any big gigs coming up? Why should people see you? TL: I hope I appeal to a huge demographic of people! Whether it be Robbie’s old stuff, new stuff, swing stuff or the Take That influence, there really is something for everyone. I’m as busy as ever, 14 years on from that chance, karaoke appearance, so I’d like to think I’m doing something right!

Service with a smile! A word from our sponsors...

MOTORWORLD is a family-run business, and has been in operation since 2005. It is run by Emma, who deals with all the day-to-day running of the office and garage, helped by Dad Graham, who is a fully-qualified mechanic, with over 46 years’ experience. They are assisted by a painter, Claudio, a prepper, Borja, and a mechanic, Tony, who all offer different qualities to the successful business. The initial idea was to offer a service to ex-pats for buying and selling second-hand, quality, used cars, where they were able to converse in their native language with British people. Our first premises were small

and in Costa del Silencio, but we soon realised that customers wanted more than to just buy or sell a car. We have always prided ourselves on offering great and friendly customer service. A lot of our business is repeat, or from recommendations, often by people who have never used our services. But they know how good our reputation is for providing fair, accurate and sensible information, where

necessary, and a guiding hand, when required. All too often, in a foreign country, people feel “lost” when confronted by the differences concerning how things are done, and buying or selling a car can be a minefield! We quickly improved our services to provide repairs and translation services, and to prepare and complete any car-related paperwork, all provided under one

roof. With Emma having been at school here, she was well placed to use her language skills, common sense and knowledge, to ensure that the business flourished. Newer, bigger premises were soon sought. These were on the Costa del Silencio industrial estate, and, from there, we were able to increase the level of repairs and servicing, all provided under Graham’s watchful and experienced eye. In 2016, we moved again to much bigger and better premises in Las Chafiras. Here, in our large Nave, we are able to display the cars for sale in lighter and much more comfortable surroundings. We have a mechanical workshop as well as a Chapa/Pintura (paint and body-work department), and an office for dealing with all the paperwork. In the car-sales section of

the business, we get many repeat customers, and many from recommendations and word of mouth. We also purchase cars, and, if we are not interested, offer advice to assist the person selling. We work for most major insurance companies such as Liberty Seguros, Zurich, Allianz, Mapfre etc., and make sure that, in the event of an accident, the assessment and repair is carried out with the minimum of fuss for the client. We are agents for Liberty Seguros, so can quote on cars, bikes, houses etc., and much of this business is from recommendations. Pop in and see us to browse our cars for sale, book a fixed-price service or valet, or post-accident repair work. For further information, visit Motorworld at our Las Chafiras premises, or call 922 783 828. You can also find us on Facebook.

Peter (Toby Jones) and Kayla (Erin Kellyman) are forced to leave Rita (Luwam Teklizgi) alone while they go to work. At the coach depot Peter prepares for a trip to Hampton Court with a large group of Japanese tourists and his co-driver Mel (Jo Hartley). They discuss the events of the last few days by a river bank, only to be confronted by an angry fisherman who accuses them of spooking his fish. The normally placid Peter, pushed to breaking point, finds his voice and shouts back. Meanwhile Rita heads into town to get her phone fixed, desperate to contact her brother. But the danger she is in quickly becomes apparent and Peter is forced to take a detour home with his passengers in tow, ending his daytrip disastrously.

easyJet is now Britain’s biggest airline, carrying nearly 90 million passengers last year. But in 2019, times have never been tougher. Staying top in these turbulent times means attracting more passengers, flying to more destinations and training up a new crop of rookie pilots. “easyJet: Inside the Cockpit” is a returning primetime series, with unprecedented fixed rig camera access which follows more pilots as they are put through their paces. From cadets taking to the air for the first time at the controls of a passenger plane, to the most experienced pilots landing at Europe’s most demanding airports. In episode one we meet the pilots who have to battle with delays, deal with a sick passenger and negotiate landing at one of the world’s most challenging airports in the heart of the Alps. Over a busy two days, Captain Emma Henderson will have to face technical breakdowns, severe turbulence and a medical emergency when a female passenger collapses in her arms.

Swamped Costa Blanca is hammered by storms

THE Costa Blanca has been battered by the largest April storm in 73 years, with winds of up to 100km per hour, and flash floods all along the eastern coast, since last Thursday. The ports of Castellon, Sagunto and Gandia, all in the Valencia area, as well as the region’s own port, were closed, while in Torrevieja, the worst hit region, 200 litres of rain per square metre fell in 48 hours, which sparked a “level 1 pre-emergency”. Firefighters attended to 300 incidents in Alicante, involving landslides, falling trees, water drains, traffic accidents and trapped vehicles. In Orihuela, near the border with Murcia, two men were injured last Friday night after

the wall of an abandoned house collapsed while they were seeking refuge. And in Novelda, in a flooded ravine which connects with the Vinalopó River, a man and woman were rescued by fireman as their car began to fill with water, rapidly. But Professor Jorge Olcina, Association of Spanish Geographers (AGE) President, told Diario Informacion that he saw it as a blessing! “Not since Good Friday, 1946, has, not had rain fallen as much and as widely distributed throughout the Iberian southeast as now”, he said. “But we had a really dry start to 2019 in this part of Spain, and these rains have come in handy to close the deficit we accumulated. “The fields of the whole province and the region of Murcia have been well soaked, which guarantees at least a couple of irrigations for the seasonal harvests.”

Irate man drives into hospital’s A & E unit

AN angry driver was arrested by police after smashing his car into an A & E department at Bilbao’s Basurto Hospital.

He had driven to the hospital’s Urgencias department with an elderly family member, who was taken ill in the early hours of the morning. When told there would be a delay before a doctor

Tourism chiefs strike out at numbers’ limit

TOURISM companies have criticised Government proposals to cap the number of visitors at some of Spain’s most popular beaches.

New legislation in Galicia has placed tourism limits on the islands of Ons, Cies, Salvora and Cortegada. A group of ship-owners and hoteliers say the plans are “unjustified”, claiming that a daily limit on tourist numbers is a “grave error”. The group said in a statement: “These are periods of great tourist relevance, and this is a decision that did not take into account the maritime transport and hospitality sector; nor their claims.” But Galicia’s Environment

Minister, Angeles Vazquez, hit back at those criticising the new plans. “Just as we have quotas to enter a cathedral and a museum, this is also a museum. It is natural heritage and we would be irresponsible if we did the opposite of what they send us,” he said.

The proposals, agreed in December, limit visitors to Ons to just 1,300 people per day during the high season, and 450 at other times. The limit for Cies has been set at 1,800, and 450 at other times, while Salvora and Cortegada are limited to just 450 and 250 tourists, respectively.

could see the sick person, he returned to his car, rammed the hospital doors and drove inside the building, coming to a stop just before the reception desk. Neither the hospital staff, nor the two people inside his white Seat Cordoba, were injured. Yet he jumped out of the vehicle and attacked an ambulance driver. When Bilbao’s Municipal Police arrived to arrest him,

he refused to take a breath test. And, say witnesses, his relative protested loudly about the way he was being treated. He now faces charges of dangerous driving and damaging public property. Basque trade union ESK expressed concern about the incident and pledged support for hospital staff, who have voiced concerns about their safety, “repeatedly”.

Granada institute’s link with Black Hole image GRANADA’S Institute of Millimetre Radio Astronomy (IRAM) played a big part in helping to obtain the Black Hole’s first image. Over five nights in April 2017, radio telescopes all over the world co-ordinated a simultaneous observation of the M87 galaxy, gathering images of the mammoth black hole in its interior. These included the 30-metre IRAM radio telescope at Granada’s Pico Veleta, as well as a Spanish-FrenchGerman venture with the help of Spain’s Instituto Geografico Nacional, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and the Max-Planck Gesellschaft. After spending two years analysing their information, the images showed the distribution of matter on the edge of the black hole,

where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can ever climb out of it. These were the first images of this kind, ever, and an “extraordinarily visual” demonstration of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, said astrophysicists. “What you’re looking at is a ring of fire, created by the deformation of space-time,” said Heino Falcke, from the Radboud University’s in Nijmegen (Netherlands).

Director probably died from drug-taking habit THE death of a former British pricecomparison website director, at his Marbella home, was probably through drugs, an inquest has heard.

Murder suspect set free, for now A BRITISH tourist, detained dramatically by police at AlicanteElche Airport on Spain’s Costa Blanca, following the death of a Scotsman in Benidorm, has been released from custody.

The airport arrest followed the death of a Scot, Jim Clark, who was alleged to have died from a head injury on the first night of a Benidorm stag do, in the English zone. Local media reported that the unnamed man had spent

a month in prison, before being released by the court last week. It is understood that the investigating judge has told the accused he must register at court every fortnight, yet he has not banned the man from leaving Spain. Benidorm sources say the man’s release follows inconclusive autopsy results, which haven’t detected a direct link between a fight and Mr Clark’s cause of death. No charges have yet been brought against the suspect, but he remains “under investigation”.

North Wales East and Central’s coroner said, at the opening of inquest hearings, that Sean Thweny was found dead at his Marbella home in February. His wife Nadia identified him, and coroner Ruthin John Gittins said documents drawn up by medical specialists in Spain after his death suggested it was probably linked to drug-taking. But he added: “The full cause is not yet known.” Thweny’s body had since been repatriated to Britain, ahead of the opening of last week’s inquest, said the coroner. And the dead man’s sister, Julie Dodge, confirmed at the hearing that her brother had a history of drug use. The inquest has now been adjourned until later this year, and Mr Gittins said its findings might not be released until

afterwards, because they needed to get documents and evidence from Spanish authorities. Previously, Thweny was a business-development director at the Moneysupermarket, pricecomparison website. His funeral took place last Friday at Chester’s Ebenezer

Baptist Church, and his body was set to be buried in Blacon Cemetery. Thweny’s family and funeral organisers asked for donations in lieu of flowers for the Narcotics Anonymous charity. The charity uses a programme to help drug-takers beat their addictions.

K9 Animal News

Another gorgeous lad!

37 CW

Live Arico News

I am Mogli

THIS is Mogli, who is approximately five years old. He is a small dog, and was captured, recently, in Palm Mar.

A FEW weeks ago, one of our staff arrived at K9, ready for a new day, and found this young boy tied up outside. She quickly came to learn just how sweet and friendly he is.

He is called Mufasa. He had no chip, so we have no idea where he came from, or his background. He is about a year old, and loves to play and be around humans. A lot of our walkers love to take him out, and he is a pleasure to be with. He has unusual colouring, and is mixed breed and medium sized. He is one of the friendliest, happiest boys who we have ever come across. The shelter environment can be stressful, but this young lad takes it all in his stride. Mufasa has been with us for a couple of months now, and, in that time, has seen two kennel-mates go to their forever homes. He has shared with two females, who he seems to get on best with. Currently, he is sharing with one of our new arrivals, Kahl, who is a very affectionate and playful puppy, also male. Mufasa is intelligent, and, from whatever home he came from, has been trained. He waits patiently to be fed, and always comes when you call him, so he does have good recall.

When he is outside he is very calm and sweet, and isn’t really bothered by other dogs. He likes to go out for walks, and, most days, he goes out two or three times, because of his loveable nature, and popularity among the volunteers. He thrives on company, so, when his first kennel-mate was adopted, he was a little bit lost and confused. We were able to match him, promptly, with another female, but she also got adopted quite quickly, leaving Mufasa upset, once again. When will he get his second chance at his forever home? He certainly deserves that second chance. He is so handsome and friendly that we are really hoping his opportunity comes, very soon. You can meet him any day at the shelter, and take him out for a walk. He is a lot of fun, and is waiting for you to meet him! Meet our other dogs! We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/ Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 9.30am-1.30pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com

Walk for Life and FACT give vital talks on cancer AT 4pm today (Friday), there will be a talk, in English, as part of Arona municipality’s second, oncology-themed Health Fair, in the Plaza del Pescador, in front of the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos. It will be given by Brigitte Gypen, President and founder of the amazing Walk for Life Foundation, and will cover the vital topic of “Early

detection of cancer saves lives”. As well as Brigitte’s talk, there will also be a speech by a member of the cancer-support group and registered association FACT (Fighting Against Cancer Tenerife). FACT was set up in 2015 by a very brave lady who had gone through cancer, initially to provide support to primarily non-Spanish-speaking cancer patients, and their families and friends. Please come along to the talk, and bring your friends. Entry is free, and we are sure it will be a very interesting event.

He had walked the streets for months, alone, but didn’t let himself be caught. He was very shy of humans at the beginning, but never aggressive. Now, after being shown kindness in the shelter, Mogli knows that not every person is bad. He is super-happy with all other dogs, and very loving. Please get in contact with us if you want to meet him. After a life on the streets he deserves a forever home, and a lovely family with only good intentions. Solidarity walk Recently, volunteers and dogs went for a walk-about in Los Cristianos, wearing their new “adopt me” vests. All the dogs behaved wonderfully, attracting a lot of attention and much appreciated fuss and cuddles, from tourists and locals alike. It is important that society is reminded of the animals living in shelters or sanctuaries, in the local community, so look out for a solidarity walk near you. The generous people of Los Cristianos donated a total of €173.12, so thank you all. Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dog-walking club on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you

can keep fit and find a furry friend at the same time. Send a WhatsApp to Oceana on 659 242 572 for further details, or just pop in and meet the dogs. Top-to-toe nutrition! WHEN we were young, we were usually told to eat our vegetables every day, and one of those foods would certainly have been broccoli. This amazing vegetable is filled with anti-ageing

nutrients like antioxidants and collagen. Broccoli is one of the vegetable superfoods that can potentially solve a lot of problems plaguing your health. A member of the cruciferous vegetable family, broccoli is completely edible, from the crowded clusters of dark-green florets at its top, to the very end of

its stem. It provides a lot of nutrition, being filled with Vitamins A and C, and containing large amounts of calcium and iron. In particular, Vitamin C is synthesised by the body for production of collagen, a protein that helps maintain the youthful appearance of the hair, nails, skin, and other external

parts of the body. Collagen is considered to be a youth-preserving nutrient, and it needs a lot of Vitamin C. Broccoli health benefits In addition to providing the main ingredient for the anti-ageing protein collagen, broccoli can prevent inflammation that opens the door for the arrival of moreserious diseases. functional food contains plenty of antioxidants, including Vitamin C. Antioxidants take out the harmful free radicals that oxidise cells and tissues. By preventing the onset of oxidative stress, antioxidants stop the inflammatory response of the immune system, which, in excessive doses or unnecessary incidents, can aggravate cellular and tissue damage. There are many ways

to prepare broccoli for consumption. You can dispense with cooking altogether, and just eat the vegetable raw. Or you can steam it for a hot meal that preserves most of its nutrients, including the important Vitamin C. If you prefer fancier cooking, you can compensate for the loss of nutrients by simply eating more of it. Whatever the means by which you prepare broccoli, you should

26th April 2019 - 2nd May 2019 remember to use the whole head. Every part of the vegetable can be eaten, and all of those parts have the Vitamin C your body needs to produce the anti-aging collagen protein. Waste not, want not, with this superfood. Broccoli pesto One recipe for broccoli calls for turning it into a pesto sauce for use with pasta dishes. Start by removing the hard, outermost parts of the stems with a vegetable peeler. After peeling the stems, cut them

into thin pieces. Toss the sliced stems and florets with garlic and olive oil. There should be enough oil to cover the broccoli and the garlic. Then roast the tossed vegetables in an oven, until the broccoli starts getting charred. This should take about 20 minutes. At this point, you can reserve some of the roasted broccoli as a garnish for the pasta, or you can go all out and use all of the vegetables in the pesto. A typical pesto is traditionally made

by grinding nuts until they become creamy, before adding herbs, lemon, and garlic. The mixture is then ground up a little more, until it becomes creamy again. Cheese and olive oil are added for the final grinding. This particular pesto calls for almonds in the first step, the addition of roasted broccoli and lemon for the second, and, finally, the cheese, olive oil and the water used to cook pasta for thickening. You can use a food processor to speed up the chore.

By Val Sainsbury MANY people have switched from smoking traditional cigarettes to the electronic variety, believing them to be harmless alternatives. But e-cigarettes may be contaminated with lung-damaging bacterial toxins of the type found in waste-incineration plants, scientists have discovered. An investigation by Harvard University found that more than one-infour of the increasinglypopular products harboured bugs known to cause asthma, inflammation and reduced lung function. In addition, the study revealed that sweet, fruity flavours, which are particularly popular among teens, were most likely to carry the toxins. Previous research has shown that chemicals linked to severe respira-

tory disease are found in common e-cigarette flavours. However, this is the first time scientists have found potentially-harmful, biological substances in the devices. The Harvard team examined 75 popular e-cigarette products, namely single-use cartridges and e-liquids for refillable devices. They found that 27% contained traces of endotoxin, a microbial agent in agricultural and industrial settings, and that 81% contained

traces of glucan, which exist in the cell walls of most fungi. Professor David Christiani, an environmental genetics expert, and the study’s senior author, said: “Finding these toxins in e-cigarette products adds to the growing concerns about the potential for adverse respiratory effects in users. The study found that cartridge samples had 3.2 times higher concentrations of glucan than the e-liquid samples. Glucan con-

centrations were also significantly higher in tobacco and mentholflavoured products, than in fruit-flavoured products. However, endotoxin concentrations were higher in fruit-flavoured products. Raw materials used in the production of flavours may be a source of the microbial contamination. The contamination of the products could have occurred at any point during the production process of ei-

ther the ingredients, or the final, e-cigarette product. But they believe that for e-cigarettes using single-use cartridges, the most likely source could the the cotton wicks, as both endotoxin and glucan are known contaminants of cotton fibres. Public Health England figures show that the number of UK children and teenagers trying vaping has doubled in recent years. Approximately 16% of children, aged 11-18, reported

having tried vaping, according to 2018 data, a rise from 8.1% in 2014. The proportion who said they had never tried e-cigarettes fell from 91.5% in 2014, to 83.4% in 2018. Since 2016, it has been illegal to sell e-cigarettes to under 18s in the UK. The Advertising Standards Authority says that vaping adverts must not be directed at, or likely to appeal to, people under 18, and should also avoid reflecting or being associated with youth culture.

CD Tenerife

Just not good enough!

ALMERIA delivered a lesson in football to Tenerife at the Heliodoro last Sunday, coming away with a comfortable victory which maintains their dream of the play-offs.

An early goal by Álvaro Giménez allowed the Andalusian team to control the match with ease, against a Tenerife side who were never comfortable on the ball. They had few chances, and were inferior from start to finish. Coach Oltra’s team suffered their worst home defeat of the season, again making the safety target difficult. Overall, it wasn’t the best of games, with few attempts on goal from either team. But Almeria started quickly and took advantage of a badly-organised home side, who seemed unfocused from the off. Tenerife, cold and unable to clear the ball, allowed Almeria to take advantage immediately, when Juan Carlos scared keeper Dani in the first minute. Just a few minutes later, they made an even bigger impact. Rioja broke down the left and beat Luis Pérez. He crossed the ball into the danger area, where Dos Santos was left in no-man’sland and Racic didn’t react, leaving Álvaro Giménez open to have a shot, which he scuffed, badly. Yet he still beat Dani from six yards out to put the visitors ahead after five minutes, with a scruffy goal. Again,

Tenerife found themselves with an uphill battle, after conceding another early goal. They were unable to overcome the pressure imposed by Almeria, and scarcely generated danger. Racic, Milla and Lasso couldn’t make any impact in the visitors’ danger zone. In fact, a deviated header from Malbasic in the seventh minute, and a Nano centre, a minute from the break, which was missed by René, were their best chances throughout the first half. Meanwhile, Almeria could have extended their lead in the 30th minute, with probably the best shot of the match by Álvaro Giménez. The ball hit the

crossbar and bounced down on to the goal-line, but replays showed that it hadn’t crossed the line. Coming out for the second half, Oltra brought on Alberto for Jorge in central defence to try to add some stability at the back, and he came out positively and nearly scored with a shot that was deflected by Malbasic. But keeper René made a good save to maintain their 1-0 advantage. It was plain to see that Almeria, happy to protect their lead, were just waiting for the right moment to launch a counter-attack. Sure enough, this happened in the 54th minute, when confusion in the Tenerife area led to a penalty for

Almeria, who claimed a handball from Milla, and Dani tripping over Álvaro Giménez when one on one. And Giménez stepped up to slot the ball past Dani neatly, to put the visitors further ahead. Four minutes later, Tenerife matters went from bad to worse when an error by Dos Santos allowed Luis Rioja to escape Alberto, cut into the centre, and place a smart shot past Dani to make it 3-0 after 58 minutes, effectively closing the game. For the rest of the match, Almeria sat back and let a lacklustre Tenerife have possession and come at them, happy in the knowledge that the match was done and dusted. But Naranjo scored a good

consolation goal in the 77th minute with the best move of the game, connecting with an accurate Suso pass across goal. At the final whistle, Tenerife, had only themselves to blame for the outcome, because, defensively, they conceded three soft goals and were awful. The task in hand has now been made more difficult, not just by this loss, but also through losing Suso and Alberto for Saturday’s crucial away visit to Extramadura. The hosts are just one point behind Tenerife in the league, and are fighting to avoid relegation themselves… a true sixpointer if ever there were one!

It’s Benidorm or Bust for major team rivals, raising charity funds RIVAL British football fans, from Newcastle and Sunderland, have teamed up for a rally-car race to Benidorm in support of a teenager battling cancer. The “Benidorm or Bust” charity rally has been organised by friends and family of 19-yearold Joe Hardman, from Brandon, County Durham, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017. Followers of Sunderland and Newcastle, renowned as bitter rivals, as are the North-

East teams, have put aside their differences and will race to the Costa Blanca resort in cars painted in their team’s colours. Neil Carr, family friend and Toon fan, said: “Joe and his dad support Sunderland and the rest of us support Newcastle, but we’re bringing the teams together. “It’s all about raising money for the children’s cancer ward at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where Joe had most of his treatment. “We’ve always been to Benidorm on a plane and come back on a plane,

so we don’t know what to expect.” Joe has been recovering from a stem-cell transplant, following a donation from

his younger sister, Grace, and now hopes to return to college. His mum, Joanne, said: “It’s just giving something back

for everything they’ve done for us, and to make it a bit easier for other families and children if they end up in there, as we did.”

Snooker

Full of the joys, along with my long-time stars By John Hennessey

SOMETIMES, just sometimes, I have to pinch myself to believe that I was snooker correspondent for the Daily Mail, then the Express, over a 23-year period, detailing the exploits of all the big names. That is why Wednesday’s Express was of particular interest to me. On the

back page, five-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan had been beaten by an amateur in this year’s first round, at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre. Inside, spanning two pages, was Jimmy White, explaining how he had cleaned up his act after years of addiction to booze and cocaine. Ronnie, whose 10-8 defeat by newcomer James Cahill was the biggest Crucible shock ever, will get over it, yet a lesser player

probably wouldn’t. But Jimmy’s revelation wasn’t news to me because the Londoner, who lived a few miles from me in Surrey, had confided in me about his drug addiction, several years ago. What made these two events so special was that Jimmy and Ronnie were just about my best pals on the circuit. Most players steered clear of journalists at tournaments, but these two superstars were always available for a chat. Having watched Jimmy progress, from the amateur ranks to take the professional game by storm, was a joy for me. But, sadly, he never got his hands on the World Championship trophy, after six losing appearances in the final. Ronnie, who has a fantastic memory, even recalled in his first book, years ago, that I’d taken him for a meal one

evening at Blackpool, as the 17-year-old galloped his way through the early-season qualifiers as a rookie pro. He also wrote that I could be hard on him at times, over one thing or another, but he also admitted that he always deserved it. He was once shocked to read that I’d written about his lack of form at one stage, and that he needed his father to sort him out. Unfortunately, his dad was working his way through a long sentence in prison for murder. But Ronnie actually agreed with my judgement. That didn’t stop him from pushing me into a lake and running off at the hotel where we stayed, while I was fishing during a morning off from snooker. He crept back, however, to make sure I was okay. The difference between the two flamboyant

players is that Ronnie practises solidly, over and over, while Jimmy, even in his heyday, would spend maybe 30 minutes on the table, and, if the balls flowed in, he’d call it a day. The pair were happy in my company, safe in the knowledge that what was said, stayed between us. My favourite story, recounted by my young brother, Ginger, involved Jimmy, who used to pop into his local near Hampton Court, from time to time. On this occasion, he was accompanied by none other than Rolling Stones’ guitarist Ronnie Wood. Jimmy ordered three pints of Guinness, and sat down with them. After a few minutes, Jimmy asked Ronnie: “Am I famous? Ronnie laughed and said: “Don’t be ridiculous, of course you’re famous. Everyone knows you,

wherever you go, and you’ve got millions of fans.” Jimmy then asked: “Are you famous?” Ronnie, who looked utterly bewildered, responded: “Of course I’m famous. I play in the greatest rock’n’roll band of all, and we’re known all over the world.” My brother sat, mesmerised, as Jimmy carried on: “So you’d say we really are famous?” Ronnie replied: “What’s this all about?” Jimmy said with a huge grin: “We’ve been sitting here for about 20 minutes, and every single person who has walked into the pub, has called out, ‘Evening Ginge’, and totally ignored us!” Sadly, my kid brother passed away some years ago, but I just know that had he lived, he’d still be sitting in the Albion regularly, waiting for Jimmy to pop in again.”

Basketball

Teenager’s tall order! A CANADIAN boy aged 13, who stands at an astonishing 7ft 2in tall, has sparked controversy about whether he should continue with his Real Madrid junior basketball team, or be promoted to the adult side. Olivier Roux, who towers above his colleagues in the Under-13 and Under-14 teams, made his début with the top-ranking club at an away match last weekend, when he scored 20 points against BBA Castelldefels (Barcelona province) within minutes. The youngster had an easy ride, thanks to his height, which meant the result of the FIBA International U-13 and U-14 Tournament was almost a foregone conclusion, leaving players from BBA Castelldefels disheartened. Comments on social media said it was not fair on Real Madrid’s

rivals, but others pointed out that for Olivier to play in the Under-13 squad was also unfair on him. His basketball future has been described as “off the planet”, but playing in matches he is certain to win means he is not being challenged enough. Many fans have said that at Olivier’s age, matches are

more a training ground for the players’ forthcoming career, than victories being of any great importance, and that the Canadian is not being stretched sufficiently. Social media users say he should be bumped up to a team with much older boys, or even adults, to enable him to his fulfil his true potential.
