Still doubts for Sánchez, after his election success
Continued from Front
It seems likely that the acting Prime Minister will form a stable coalition partner with Left-wing Podemos party, who backed him up after his previous Government success. Yet there are still doubts. On the plus side for Sánchez, the results gained by the main right-wing parties mean he has little risk of being trumped by a coalition agreement between them. But a new Spanish Government is unlikely to emerge until June, as the parties will continue to campaign for May’s local and European elections. With Sanchez failing to win an outright governing majority, it is still unclear whether he will seek to form a full coalition government, or try to run as a minority Socialist administration. But as he met with his party executive to discuss their next move, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo suggested that the socialists’ preferred option would be to govern in
minority, seeking confidence and supply agreements with groups such as Podemos. “We think we have more than enough support to be the rudder of this ship,” said Ms Calvo, while recognising the role of Podemos in pushing forward progressive policies during the 10-monthlong Sánchez minority government, before the latest general election. Sanchez’s relative freedom
to decide was made possible by a catastrophic showing from Spain’s mainstream, conservative, Popular Party, which lost more than half of its parliamentary representation, falling to 66 seats. Among the campaign pledges of Podemos is a plan to impose a special tax on banks to pay back bailout funds, poured into the financial sector during the
Man suffers in his smoke-filled home
A MAN suffered the effects of smoke inhalation after a fire at his Las Rosas apartment last Monday. The emergency services were contacted at around 3.15pm by a neighbour requesting help, because he could see smoke seeping through the windows of a house in the area. Fire-fighters sent to the scene spotted a fire inside the house, and began to extinguish the flames immediately, while rescuing the man
from the dense smoke, which had accumulated. The smoke also damaged the homes either side of the building, and the fire-fighters rescued four dogs from them. A medic from a nearby medical centre attended the scene, treating the smoke-affected occupant, and telling him to seek further treatment in hospital because of the after-effects. Both Local Police and the Guardia Civil worked alongside each other during the emergency.
crisis, and the creation of a public-energy company to cut costs for consumers. But even with Podemos support, the ruling PSOE would still find itself nine seats short of a governing majority, raising the prospect of again needing the divisive support of the Catalan parties to cross the line. In a sign of the ongoing divisions, Spain’s electoral board on Monday ruled
that Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont could not run as a candidate for Spain in European elections next month, from his self-imposed exile in Brussels. In total, the PSOE gained nearly 7.5m votes in an election which saw a much higher participation than the summer 2016 event, taking 75.75% of the electorate, as opposed to 66.48% last time, and representing 28.68% of ballots. The right-wing PP has plunged in popularity, the 123 seats gained in 2015 and the 137 won in 2016 under Mariano Rajoy disappearing rapidly. The most likely path back to the Presidency for Sánchez will be to join forces with left-wing Podemos, which has gone from being Spain’s third-largest political power to fourth, dropping from 72 seats to 42. Whatever transpires, Sánchez will have to begin talks with his likely coalition partners next month, leaving King Felipe VI, formally, to invite him to form a new government.

Frenchman crosses Atlantic, in barrel! BRAVE Frenchman Jean-Jacques Savin, 72, who spent four months floating across the Atlantic in his home-made barrel from El Hierro, reached his goal last Sunday.
Yet he had been drifting at one stage towards the US, and was looking for a vessel to take him to the nearest port. With no engine, sails or paddles, the pensioner relied on trade winds and currents to push him 4,800km, from the Canary Island to the Caribbean, in his unusual craft. Savin spent months building his bright orange, barrelshaped capsule, of resincoated plywood, which had to be strong enough to withstand battering waves and other stresses. The barrel is three metres long

and 2.1m across, with a small galley area, and a mattress, complete with straps, to keep him from being tossed out of his bunk by rough seas. Portholes on either side of the barrel, and another looking into the water, provide sunlight and a bit of entertainment for him. The unique craft also has a solar panel, which generates energy for communications and GPS positioning. As he drifted along, Savin dropped markers in the ocean to help oceanographers study the currents. And at the end of the journey, Savin was studied by doctors for the effects of solitude in close confinement. He described his journey as a “crossing during which man isn’t captain of his ship, but a passenger of the ocean”. Savin’s adventure, estimated to have cost around 58,000 euros, was funded by French barrel-makers and crowdfunding.
Mum fights for life, with no insurance! A BRITISH mother is fighting for her life while stranded in a Santa Cruz hospital, because her insurance company has refused to pay medical bills. Elaine Ruddick, 57, who was struck by pneumonia four days into her Tenerife holiday, was taken into

Her 62-year-old husband, Charlie, said: “This is the closest I have ever come to losing my wife, in 37 years of marriage. I have never cried so much in all my life. “It has been touch-and-go for over a week, and she’s still very critical. But, thankfully,

TENERIFE is home to a growing number of foreign-language authors, many of whom are established writers, while others are taking that tentative first step, dipping their finger into author’s ink!
These days, with self-publishing coming into its own, more and more budding writers are discovering that all they need is that extra push to publish. And what could be more useful than talking to like-minded scribblers, who have taken that path? Or maybe you would rather seek a more traditional route, sending your manuscript to publishing houses in search of that big break. Either way, there will be people at Adeje Book Fair this evening (Friday) and tomorrow who can advise. Among them will be overseas residents living here as published authors, who are now successful. They are recognised writers, and have overcome many of the problems faced by new writers, which are often compounded by living in another country. The “foreign writers” part of Adeje Book Fair is now an established and popular section of this annual event, celebrating the written word and the published image. This year, the section will occur during the weekend fair, to-

Washed-up package all part of the drug pattern
LOCAL Police officers from Santa Cruz, on foot patrol around the Anaga coastline, in Las Palmas de Anaga, noticed a package washed up on the beach, which, when opened, was found to contain 1.5kg of cocaine.
It appeared to have come from America, and the officers are certain that this is not the first time a package will be found on Canarian shores. The archipelago is a preferred route for drug-traffickers, known as the stepping stone into Europe. Over the years, it has become common knowledge that the 1,500km of coastline surrounding the Canary Islands is most attractive
for many illegal activities, partly because the archipelago’s location offers an easy access into Europe for many traffickers. The islands are familiar with people trafficking, as well as the illegal entry of hashish because of their proximity to the neighbouring continent, The drugs pass through the islands in three popular ways: the first by small sailing yacht, which makes small stops on route to avoid detection, and the second is by drug mules, who bring the drugs in via the airport or ports, after swallowing many bulletshaped packages containing the substances. Then, thirdly, there are the bales of drugs, which are transferred from a bigger ship to a smaller boat, to bring the drugs closer to the coastline. It is likely that the package discovered last week was bought in this way.

The Book Fair, now in its 16th year, offers visitors a huge range of attractions, from book launches, story-telling for kids, workshops, concerts, and even a kids’ cookery workshop. According to Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, the councillor responsible for heritage and libraries: “The book fair has become a meeting place, and a reference point for residents and visitors. “It is also is a showcase for our literature. and a place where the public can get to meet new authors.” Events begin this evening at 6pm with the presentation of a number of new books in Spanish. Along with a performance by Nicotine Swing. Events tomorrow (Saturday) begin at 10am with a kids’ concert, followed by the foreign language event, in English. That will enable available authors to chat, one-on-one with the public, from 11am to noon, and there’s a workshop in English with them from 12 noon to 1pm. The fair continues throughout Saturday with readings, stories and songs. Listen to Oasis Fm today (Friday) at 1pm, when Justin Charles will be speaking with Clio and Brad, who are involved in the Book Fair.

NEWS IN BRIEF Budget airline’s staff Minor shock for paraglider harsh on autistic boy A PARAGLIDER suffered minor injuries after falling on to an electric tower in Adeje last Saturday afternoon. The pylon is situated on Calle Charfa which runs adjacent to the TF-1, near Tu Trebol supermarket.
Car-driver, 13, stuns police
POLICE officers in Spain performed a double take when they stopped a car being driven by a 13-year-old … with his parents in the car! Elche Local Police, on the Costa Blanca, reported the “irresponsible” action in the Peña de las Águilas district earlier this week, on their Twitter account. The officers have passed on the case to Alicante’s Child Prosecutor’s office, where the parents could face charges of being “collaborators”.
Child’s body found in ravine
GUARDIA Civil rescue teams have found the body of a nineyear-old child, who had disappeared in Huesca. According to sources from the armed institute, the corpse of the little boy was found at around 11am last Sunday, near a ravine in Sierra de Guara. The child was part of a group, who were canyoning in the Oscuros del Balces area, near Rodellar. Spanish press report that two women in the group were rescued, but the child was dragged away by the current, in an area which was difficult to access.
THE mother of a 15-year-old autistic boy has hit out bitterly at Ryanair staff, after the airline’s alleged behaviour at Alicante Airport. “They refused to let him on the flight, and wanted to charge to take his doll on board,” said Helena Estrella, mother of Leo. She said of the low-cost airline’s personnel: “They refused to let him fly home because he became distressed when they wouldn’t let him have his doll. And they then demanded payment for it as hand-luggage.” She added: “Leo’s carer, who was travelling with him, had not even refused to make the payment.” Helena said the situation caused her son to have a “meltdown”, when four or five officers surrounded him, after Ryanair staff had called the police. “Special assistance had been requested because not all disabilities are visible, but we were told ‘No’ by Ryanair because Leo can walk,” she said. The mother said Leo’s carer “was wearing the recognised Lanyair, which is used to alert airport staff of a non-visible disability”. Helena added that Leo was taken to the airport doctor and had to be medicated, because he was “highly
distressed”. Ryanair offloaded their luggage “and offered them no other way to get home”. After much desperation, Leo’s carer bought new tickets to get home from the Jet2 counter. Helena praised the Jet2 staff for “the level of compassion and outstanding customer service because they got her boy home, treating him with kindness, dignity and respect. “Please accept my thanks for the bottom of my heart,” said Helena, who has asked for everyone to share her posts on Facebook to highlight Jet2’s outstanding customer service. Ryanair replied to Helena, who also took to Twitter to report the incident, saying: “We are really sorry about this. We suggest you to contact, directly, the special assistance department”. But in a statement, puzzled Ryanair officials responded to the criticism and allegations,
saying: “This teenage passenger and his carer were provided with special assistance by Alicante airport after checking in. (All such assistance in Alicante is provided by the Airport Authority). “At passport control, the teenager became agitated and aggressive towards his carer, and the carer took the decision not to travel. “The passengers were then taken to the airport medical assistance team, where the upset passenger received sedation. “As these two passengers never arrived at the Ryanair Boarding gate, their luggage was off-loaded at the request of Alicante passport control staff, who advised Ryanair’s gate agents that they had decided not to travel. “These two passengers did not arrive at the boarding gate, and, therefore, were not denied boarding, and neither were they charged for any hand luggage.”
in a Guardia Civil patrol car stopped his progress. Miraculously, there no accidents. He began his journey at Añaza, and was intercepted by the Guardia in Guimar, alongside the industrial estate. An emergency call had been made at 8.30am, informing the operator of the circumstances. Before long, Guardia Civil Trafico officers detected the vehicle, and stopped the
oncoming traffic for safety reasons. They then caught up with the errant driver, halting him by turning on the sirens as well as the headlights. As they approached the vehicle in their car, the driver looked disorientated, yet he managed to stop his vehicle. The elderly man was also extremely nervous, and he told the police he hadn’t realised he was driving all that distance in the wrong lane.

Blazing cars alert police
A FIRE in Santa Cruz, involving several vehicles in Calle Davinca, is being investigated by suspicious Local Police. Initially, it looked as though one of the cars had been torched intentionally, which, subsequently, damaged nearby vehicles. Fire-fighters, dispatched to the scene by the emergency services, extinguished the blaze, before officers were able to take a closer look. The evidence was enough for them to open an investigation.
Bread and cereal tax drops
SPAIN’S central government has lowered IGIC on wholemeal breads and cereals in a bid to promote healthy eating. The move means that some foods will now be taxed at just 4%, rather than the current 10%, and included those considered to be beneficial to health. Government spokeswoman Isabel Celaa said the change would have an important effect on taxation, adding that it was about improving the customer’s information.
A PENSIONER had the luckiest escape of his life, as did other drivers, when, totally disoriented, the 81-yearold drove his car against the traffic for 13 miles, on the TF-1, heading south. True, the 81-year-old man caused some disruption to the oncoming traffic, but he was rescued when officers

Adeje’s Open Space employment scheme for productive staff
ADEJE Council, in partnership with a number of the borough’s private companies, has initiated an employment project “AUGE” (the management of employment and entrepreneurship for highereducation graduates). The project is aimed at people aged between 18-35, who have completed a thirdlevel course, or a professional training course, but are either unemployed or in a job that doesn’t suit them, given their education and training. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “We need to increase the number of young people in our productive network. Without young people, there is no future. We have an important group of young, educated graduates, and we need to help them find appropriate work, which will guarantee the kind of professional values they seek; work which offers them professional emancipation.” The Global Jobs Pact is a set of balanced, realistic, policy measures, which countries, with the support of regional and multilateral institutions, can adopt to ease the impact of the crisis, as well as accelerating employment recovery. It was adopted in June 2009 by the International Labour
Organisation, and calls on its member States to put decent work opportunities at the core of their crisis responses. It addresses the social impact of the global crisis on employment, and proposes jobcentred policies for countries to adapt, according to their national needs. The pact states: “The damage to employment, created by the financial and economic crisis, has caused hardship to many working women and men, families and communities, and worsened poverty. “It has threatened the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, weakened middle-classes, heightened risks to social cohesion and eroded the confidence of decision-makers. “Recovery will not be sustainable unless jobs are created and maintained. With 45 million young people entering the workforce annually, 300 million new jobs need to be created… just to keep up with the labour-force growth.” AUGE is designed to meet the needs of our qualified young people, who know there is a with a lack of possibilities open to them to develop their capabilities, which leads many to emigrate. The Open Space event, which will bring together graduates,
qualified young people and potential employers, takes place in Costa Adeje’s Hotel Victoria this evening (Friday, 3rd May) at 5pm. The opening address will be given by Juan Verde, President of the Fundación Advanced Leadership, and former Under-Secretary of State to President Obama. There will be a series of roundtable discussions, led by various people in the business, training and employment field, including Xiomara Méndez, creator of the jobseeking Canarian webpage, www.enbuscade.org, and Ana Gallardo, professor and mentor in the MentorDay company. During the evening, attendees will also have a chance to present themselves to company representatives in attendance, include people from Dekbera, the Spring Hotel group, Crea Solutions, and Ikea, among others. They will be there to chat and accept CVs from anyone interested in working with them. The event is free, but you should register. Disco gang beat a teenager to death
A TEENAGER, aged 17, who was brutally beaten by a gang following an argument about cigarettes at a San Sebastian disco, has died in hospital.
Sources said the victim refused to give them to the attackers, who beat and kicked him. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres on
him, and he was rushed to hospital in a serious condition. The attack was said to have happened in the early hours of last Friday, but, tragically, the youngster lost his fight for life on Sunday at Donostia Hospital. Two friends of the victim, and his brother, who tried to intervene, were also injured. Police arrested all seven men involved in the beating. They are aged 18-25, and three are Romanians, two North Africans and two Spaniards.
Suspicious woman’s drugs GUARDIA Civil officers detained a 39-yearold woman at Tenerife North airport, carrying two kilos of cocaine in her luggage. Officers stopped the woman because they were suspicious of her behaviour after alighting. They identified her,
then checked her luggage, discovering four plastic packages. The packages were analysed and the substance proved to be cocaine, weighing 2,044 grams, with a street value of more than 120,000 euros. The woman, charged with drug-trafficking, and already has a police record for similar charges.
Stabbed woman left with severe injuries A WOMAN aged 36 was treated for serious stomach injuries, after being stabbed last Friday in Gran Canaria’s San Bartolome de Tirijana municipality. The incident happened at around 11.10pm in El Tablero, and the emergency services, who had been alerted,
responded by sending a specialised, medical ambulance immediately. When medics arrived at the scene, they realised the extent of her injuries, and, having stabilised her, transferred her to the Las Palmas University hospital. National Police, who opened an investigation, were assisted at the scene by Local Police colleagues.

Forget all tricks, you cannot beat the breathalyser
GUARDIA Civil traffic police have exposed some of the most common “clever tricks” used by drivers over the alcohol limit, to fool officers into thinking they are sober and to try to “beat the breathalyser”.
But here’s the bad news for anyone with little regard for the safety of other roadusers: they don’t work! Random breathalyser checks are often programmed ahead of major public holidays, during the start of the summer traffic exodus, along with the “operation return” in September, during or after important football matches, and parties or events. Less frequently, they may be staged over ordinary summer evenings and weekends, but they can also crop up for no apparent reason. You may as well co-operate, because refusing to be breathalysed is a criminal offence. And, if you’ve decided to drive, you should be in a position not to have to worry about the test. But Guardia Civil officers say there are always motorists who think they can outsmart them. There will always be someone in a social group who tells the others, confidently, that they “have only to do this one thing, and the authorities will send you on your way”. This is not clever, say General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) officials, because alcohol is present in 30-50% of crashes
Driver didn’t give a hoot about shooting
THE National Police have detained a 35-year-old Lanzarote man, at his Arrecife home, charging him with threatening behaviour.
involving deaths, making it one of the biggest risk factors on Spain’s roads. “Drinking olive oil, chewing grains of rice, chewing gum, sucking a lemon or drinking egg-white... these tricks and others like them do not alter the breathalyser result,” stresses the Guardia, on their Twitter site. “And if you mix them with alcohol, they can cause a colossal stomach ache! The best way to beat the breathalyser is sticking to 0,0.” Other rumoured techniques, said to lead to an alcoholfree result in an over-thelimit driver, include swilling mouthwash, drinking several litres of water, making oneself sweat, or having a coffee or Red Bull as one’s last drink of the night.
But, say traffic police, these are equally pointless. Many drivers believe breathalysing, which shows up the quantity of alcohol in the breath, also shows the volume of alcohol in the bloodstream, meaning disguising breath content will, additionally, show a zero reading for blood alcohol levels. But this is not true. The saliva involved in a breathalyser test, which shows up bloodalcohol levels, means these will be evident, simply by the driver putting the tube into his or her mouth. Police also have a message for those who think they can drink and then avoid spotchecks by taking a “secret”, cross-country shortcut home.

He had no previous police record, but had a gun in his possession and fired it, in an attempt to get a driver to stop using his car horn excessively. A neighbour heard the shots, and, after a quick look, realised what was going on. He then called the National Police and told them a street fight was taking place, involving guns. They arrived almost immediately, and began door-to-door inquiries with
the neighbours, in search of individuals who witnessed the shots being fired. Various neighbours told the officers they had seen a neighbour threatening a driver inside the car, which resulted in an abusive argument, and then the shots. The initial reason for the argument was the continual use of the car horn by a driver, who was tooting, to let a pal know he was waiting for him outside the apartment in which he lived. The police eventually located the man, who handed over the gun, rapidly, along with 10 cartridges. He was charged, and, along with the police report, will face a court judge.

Angler’s rocky fall leaves him bruised
AN elderly angler was left in a critical condition last Saturday evening, after falling on to a rocky coastline at El Hierro’s Las Cojas beach and into the sea.
The accident happened in the Valverde municipality, and the emergency services received a call at around
8pm, requesting medical assistance. An ambulance was dispatched, and, upon arrival, medics saw a couple of surfers rescuing the man, who was quickly assessed. The 71-year-old had endured serious bruising through the fall, and an emergency helicopter was called to evacuate him to the Virgen de los Reyes general hospital, where he was admitted for observation.
Giant whale killed by passenger ferry
The whale was found in Valencia Port’s Poniente Quay
A PASSENGER ferry has, inadvertently, killed a sperm whale during a routine trip between Palma, Mallorca, and Valencia.
The giant creature was discovered, only when the Transmediterranea ship docked at the Poniente Quay in the Port of Valencia, at 7.45pm last Saturday. Port workers called the
Emergency Control Centre after seeing the cetacean, trapped on the front of the large, passenger ship. But the crew, unaware of the accident because of the size of the ship and engine noise, said they “knew nothing about it”. Port police attempted to rescue the whale, but it had sunk in the port, and, the following morning, divers were called in to remove the body.
Jonas returns home, after dodging killer!
THE small German boy, who survived last week’s horrific murder of his mother and 10-year-old brother, in Adeje, allegedly, by his father, has returned to his native country.
Jonas, aged six, was chaperoned by a priest, who was given permission by the boy’s German relatives, to accompany him. The priest visited Jonas shortly after the vicious attack took place in a cave, after receiving their authorisation. He has since been by the youngster’s side, and has kept in constant contact with the relatives since that heartbreaking day. The bewildered boy, who escaped from the cave just in time, as his mum, Silvia, 39, and brother Jakob, were being stoned to death, has since been looked after by the social services in a care home. For reasons unknown, no family members have flown to Tenerife from Germany to be with the youngster. The double murder, allegedly carried out by the brutal hands of his father, 43-yearold Thomas Handrick, inside a La Quinta cave in Ifonche, created a huge commotion in the south of Tenerife, specifically in Adeje. That is where he had been living for the past three years, even though he was never registered, officially. But the father, now in a prison hospital, is showing no remorse. In fact, he did speak from his prison cell after being arrested, but only to ask for medication for an aching leg! He spent last weekend in the Penitentiary Prison, Tenerife 2, after being ordered “immediate entry there without bail” last Friday, when
he appeared before the Magistrate, from the courts against domestic violence. Since Handrick was jailed, he has been under observation at the prison hospital, along with a trusted inmate, assigned to him because the murder suspect was under close observation for suicide watch. The inmate, who must accompany him at all times, has been with Hancock since he entered the prison, keeping a close eye on him. Handrick had told Guardia Civil officers during his interrogation, as well as the court magistrate last Friday, that he was on a special type of anti-depressant medication. The Guardia returned to his home after his arrest, to retrieve the medication. Officials want to avoid any possible obstacles in the investigation, especially with the accused missing important medication. Handrick has been accused of attempted murder, as well as murder in the first degree. Unsurprisingly, the coldblooded German has no interest in his surviving son, six-year-old Jonas, which has led investigators to believe the crime was premeditated.
Jonas still has no knowledge of the murders. He had been saving sweets for his brother for several days in the care home, where he played with other children, whose language he could not understand. Initially, he was found among some bushes in La Quinta, a clutch of houses sitting above Adeje town, when he ran away from the horrific attack. Local resident Rosi Pérez, who discovered him, looking “scared and sunburnt”, thought he had wandered away from the German family while walking in the hills. In fact, the little boy had just escaped from his father, who, it is believed, had tried to kill his entire family, after tempting them into the cave with a promise of Easter presents. Somehow, Jonas managed to run away from the cave, where his mother and older brother were being battered to death with stones. Handrick had lived in his Adeje apartment for just two months, and it is where, judicial sources believe, he made plans about how to kill his wife, and his two children. He wasn’t planning on leaving any of them alive,” said the sources.

Spain and UK citizens must all gain status protection after Brexit

This enforced the EU’s lingering frustration with the UK, and highlights further the major differences between May’s negotiated deal with the EU, and the UK parliament’s resistance to accepting it. straightforward” if, at the same time, the UK ignored the other major, outstanding issues, which need to be agreed on before the UK’s official withdrawal from the EU. As it stands, there seems to be a deadlock in the negotiations between the UK and the EU, and it appears that it is already having an effect on the multi-billion-pound tourism industry. That’s because up to 10% fewer Brits are, reportedly, travelling to EU countries. Spain, however, is still the top target, according to Thomas Cook, for Brits looking to leave the misery of Brexit negotiations behind them. Following Monday’s meeting, MP Costa said: “British citizens in the EU and EU nationals in the UK have, through their representatives, made it clear to the Government that the amendment, ringfencing citizens’ rights,
must be championed. “I am glad the Secretary of State has agreed to respond to Mr Barnier directly, insisting on the protection of five million people’s rights, in the absence of the withdrawal agreement being passed.” With the European Parliamentary elections now set for the end of this month, which wasn’t, initially, thought possible, following the UK’s Brexit referendum on 23rd June 2016, there are two new parties hoping to get their new Member of European Parliament elected. The first newcomer is called “Change UK”, formerly known as “The Independent Group”. The second group is called the “Brexit Party”, formed by ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who, no doubt, will be looking to reside in the European Parliament, until the UK actually leaves the EU!

Brits plucked in anti-drug raids TWO unnamed British citizens, arrested during anti-drug-trafficking raids in Marbella, on the Costa del Sol, were picked up in San Pedro de Alcantara, during a search of three properties, there and in Mijas. The raids, involving large sums of cash seized, as well as documents, were part of a probe into an international criminal gang. They had been suspected of transporting large volumes of hashish from Morocco to the UK, via the Costa del Sol and Strait of Gibraltar, via their fruit-export companies. The investigation began at the end of October last year, when Guardia Civil officers became aware of British gangs sending large volumes of the drug back to the UK. Further investigations discovered that bales of hashish were being hidden in homes and properties, featuring high-security measures, to

When the traffickers believed the coast was clear, they moved the drugs to the small town of Trujillanos, in Palencia. There, the drug-traffickers used their fruit-export companies as a front to move the drugs across Spain and into northern Europe. Guardia officers intercepted at least one truck when it reached Salamanca, seizing 1,335kg of hashish, hidden
among boxes of oranges. They called in the UK’s National Crime Agency, as well as French Judicial Police, in a bid to identify and track down suspects involved in the gang. The crack team ordered the three raids, featuring homes in San Pedro de Alcantara and Mijas, leading to the Brits’ arrest. A Frenchman was also nabbed when he later returned from his native country.
The 230ft-high Mirador Princess, the Costa del Sol’s answer to the London Eye, will be removed in a week or so, following an ongoing dispute between the Port Authority and Mederyt, the construction company behind the attraction. It is believed to be “interfering” with a multi-million-euro plan for office development in the Muelle de Heredia area of the provincial capital, which includes a car park. With fully accessible 21 air-
conditioned cabins offering stunning views of Malaga, the site has proved its critics wrong over the past few years, by attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors. But with no alternative site planned, the landmark’s owner, Mederyt, said it was in a ‘position of hopelessness’. The company, “very surprised” by the decision, is pleading for the wheel to remain, or at least be placed elsewhere. Malaga’s Tourism Board has used the installation in most of its advertising campaigns, for obvious reasons. But the wheel courted controversy from the beginning, after luxuryproperty owners complained that people would be able to see inside their homes from the cabins, while the Port Authority thought it was simply “too big”.

‘Taxable’ sports facility an own-goal by council A BRITISH expat had his bank account embargoed by his local Council, after erecting a standard football goal in his garden.
The business owner, in his 40s, received a letter from Javea Town Hall, in Alicante, saying that he’d had an outstanding debt of €12 added to his local property tax (IBI) for owning a “sports facility”. But the father-of-one, who asked not to be named, failed to pay the tax, leading the Town Hall to embargo his account over the outstanding bill. The home-owner said the goal “must have been spotted on Google Maps”, adding: “It’s ridiculous, and, incredibly, it’s true,” after publishing his complaint on social media. A spokeswoman for Javea Town Hall said: “The Spanish Tax Agency has been clamping down on home-owners who neglect to register sports facilities, which increase

IBI payments. Last year they focused on the Javea area.” She added that “sports facilities”, accounted for swimming pools and other installations, and that inspections were made via Google Maps and even by drone. She confirmed that “hundreds” of Javea residents had not applied for licences before building such
facilities in their gardens, and were also fined €60. For those who neglected to pay the fine, an extra €12 was added on this year, before bank accounts were finally embargoed. But the spokeswoman admitted: “It is ridiculous to be fined over a football goal,” urging the person in question to complain to Alicante’s Gerencia Territorial del Catastro.
AN archaeological dig under Alicante’s central market in Elche has uncovered a grim scene:120 skeletons, dating back to the Islamic period of the city’s history.
The human remains go back to between the 11th and 13th centuries, and, in a poignant insight into the realities of life and death in those times, 60% are of children under 12 years of age. The discovery was made during the third phase of an archaeological investigation
of the area. Elche’s Urbanism Councillor, José Manuel Sánchez, said a fourth phase of excavations was planned to take in the ruins of the Arab baths, extending into the Central Market building. The gruesome find follows the discovery of three skeletons during February’s exhumation work at Mallorca’s Pou de s’Aguila, in Llucmajor. It is thought that the skeletons might have belonged to victims of the Franco regime, and families with missing relatives were invited to contact Mallorca Council to arrange DNA tests.

Spanish girl group second in European’s tubby table
SPANISH girls, aged between six and nine, are the second-mostobese in Europe, according to new research.
Around 17% of girls in this age group in Spain are obese, while Cyprus had the worst prevalence with 19%. Meanwhile, Spanish boys in the same age group are Europe’s fourth-most obese in Europe, after Greece (20%), Italy (21%) and Cyprus (21%). Montenegro and San Marino are tied with Spain on 19%, while some well-known overweight countries, such as the UK, France, Germany and Russia, were left out of the study, which covered 21 European nations. A “decline” in the Mediterranean Diet, which includes fish, nuts, olive oil,
fruit and vegetables, has been blamed by scientists for the poor results produced in Spain, Greece and Italy. Dr João Breda, head of the World Health Organisation’s European office for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases, who led the research, said: “The loss of the Mediterranean Diet in southern European countries could be linked to this severe, obesity problem. “Without timely, appropriate and effective policy measures to prevent obesity, there is a risk that prevalent rates in these countries will, eventually, match the levels seen in other European countries.” Data for 636,933 analysed children, aged 6-9, indicated that there were 400,000 obese children in this age group, of the 13.7m in the 21 countries studied.
Fruit and veg are under siege from deadly parasites BREXIT spells much uncertainty for Spanish fruit and veg on its way to the UK, because of import tariffs, working restrictions and border queues etc. But 2019 began with Spain’s fresh produce facing a series of threats much closer to home: parasites and pests! In March came news from the north of Spain that olive harvests had decreased by as much as 50% in some areas. And the olive fly was behind the devastation in Aragon, one of Spain’s worsthit regions. More recently, the Balearics’ Government announced that it was flying 46 experts out to California to study the Xylella bacteria. This infectious agent has decimated crops in Mallorca, after being discovered on the island for the first time in November 2016. But it isn’t just olives, because the almonds in Mallorca and Ibiza are also under threat. In Palma, a study of Xylella
was conducted on 17 almond and 29 olive varieties, to test which were the most resistant. The Asian wasp is deadly for bees, and, subsequently, the honey produce at Costa Blanca’s beehives, which has been on the decline, by 13.5%, over the past decade. Some bad business in the past 10 years didn’t help, but a small mite called the Varroa Destructor, which clings to bees and slowly kills them, definitely played its part. In February, the news broke that Malaga was already beginning to import prickly pears, or chumbos, which usually doesn’t occur until
the end of summer, when stocks run low. Cochineal beetles were responsible, and a plague which swept through Spain saw some plantations wiped out. Now, however, avocado harvests are set to keep growers busy until midMay, as long as the fruit’s arch-nemesis, the Rosellinia necatrix fungus, doesn’t wreak its usual havoc. But there is still hope, though, because Andalucian researchers have discovered that a unique fungus is able to surround an avocado tree, fighting off this fungus while leaving the plant unharmed.

ONE of Spain’s main consumer organisations has warned that excessive consumption of “trendy” foods, “green” supplements and “detox” products can be harmful to health.
The OCU says that aloin, one of the main components of aloe vera, can be toxic above a certain dosage. The precise volume is “under investigation” and safe levels for humans have not been determined. The OCU warns: “Many European countries do not have adequate monitoring systems for this plant-based substance.” The milder downside is that aloin can create a laxative effect, and, should you become aware, consumption of aloe vera juice, or supplements, should be cut down considerably. Taking green-tea supplements, or drinking it in huge quantities, can also be associated with liver damage, according to the OCU. Catechins are abundant in green tea, and these are the elements associated with the natural antioxidant effect, which helps prevent cell damage. But consuming more than 800 milligrams a day is harmful to the liver.
Trendy fashion food can be so damaging to a healthy lifestyle
This quantity would not come from three or four cups of green tea a day. But in the case of green-tea extract supplements, often taken by those who want the benefits but are not keen on the bitter taste of the drink, there is a significant risk where these are very highly-concentrated, and exceed your daily catechin maximum. “Detox” smoothies, such as “green juice”, popular in the US and made from a combination of green vegetables and fruit, are not proven, scientifically, to clear the system of toxins. In fact, nutritionists point out that humans do not need to “detox”, because their kidneys, liver, lymph glands, and other bodily functions, do so quite adequately. Oxalic acid, naturally present in green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale, can cause extremely painful kidney stones, if more than 180 milligrams is consumed daily. High doses of oxalic acid
are also associated with the body’s failure to absorb other necessary minerals, such as calcium, iron and potassium. Nitrate content in these types
of drink are of particular concern, since green, leafy vegetables contain much higher concentrations of this type of chemical than other
15 CW
plant-based products. Many types of processed meat have nitrates added to them to improve their colour and preserve them. But high levels of nitrates and nitrites can create nitrosamines in the human body, which increase the cancer risk. And nitrates have been associated with migraines! Fresh greens, unless cooked thoroughly, also carry the risk of passing on bacteria, or certain types of virus, since they have not been subjected to any type of preservation treatment. Raw shiitake mushrooms, another “fashionable food” for which consumption has rocketed in recent years, have been associated with a much higher incidence of dermatitis, especially in France. That’s because of its high content of lentinan, a natural sugar found in these vegetables, which is killed off when exposed to the cooking heat. Symptoms can last for between three and 21 days, and patients end up having to be treated with corticosteroids or antihistamines, or both. Eating excessive seaweed can lead to an iodine overdose, warns the OCU. It also contains a high content of heavy metals, such as arsenic, and can be carriers of chemical and microbiological pollutants.

No joy for squatter No one hurt in a in ‘murder’ house ferry-boat blaze
A SQUATTER has been arrested after breaking into an Estapona house, where a British expat is said to have stabbed his wife to death.
British father Geoffrey Elton, 55, was arrested last month, accused of the brutal murder of his Spanish wife, Gloria Tornay Naranjo, 58, to whom he had been married for 30 years. Now, a Spanish man has been arrested after breaking into the property, which is a suspected murder scene, in an attempt to squat there. The CCTV, at the Forrest Hills
urbanisation home, captured the unnamed 32-year-old from Estepona, breaking in while wearing a hooded top. He was rumbled when Gloria’s brother entered the house and caught the man, whom he reported to the police. The would-be squatter was, apparently, aware that one of the owners of the property had died, while the other remained in police custody. He was arrested on burglary charges and not robbery. Gloria died at the house on 9th March after she had been stabbed a total of 12 times, in her back and chest.
A FERRY boat, travelling to Spain with 900 people aboard, caught fire in the engine room at around 4am last Monday.
The Plymouth-to-Santander PontAven vessel, run by Brittany Ferries, was re-routed to Brest in north-west France, following the incident. The boat, carrying 766 passengers and 142 staff, was attended by firefighters, who were transported by French navy helicopters, to tackle the blaze. The travel company said “comprehensive checks” would be carried out
on the 184m-long boat, which can accommodate 2,400 passengers and 650 cars. It added: “Crew immediately put training into action and brought the fire under control. Brittany Ferries would like to apologise to all passengers affected by this morning’s incident, and for the disruption to their onward journeys.” British and Spanish nationals were among those on board, but nobody was injured. Passengers were given the option to travel back to the UK, or continue to Spain. But, either way, they would be compensated.
Urgent new rules about the tenants’ protection THE majority of letting contracts for domestic properties or commercial premises in Spain, including the Canary Islands and the Balearics, are governed by the Urban Letting Contracts regulation (Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos).
This law was enacted in 1994, but it has been modified on numerous occasions. The latest revision was carried out by Royal Decree on 1st March, concerning urgent measures regarding dwellings and letting contracts. This revision has led to important changes to the conditions of the lettings, and here are some of these changes. Firstly, the minimum term for a tenant to remain in the property has changed in respect of the letting of main residencies. This period has increased from three to five years. And, in addition, in case no term has been stated in the contract, the minimum term will also be five years. However, in a situation where the owner of the property is a company, these terms have been increased to seven years, because these changes will give the tenant greater security and stability. Also, in the previous regulation, an owner not wishing to extend the contract, had to notify the tenant one month in advance. This term has now been increased to
four months, allowing the tenant a better opportunity to find new accommodation. Conversely, when a tenant doesn’t want to continue his contract, the term increases from one month to two months’ notice. A maximum limit has also been established for deposits and guarantees, which are now equivalent to the cost of rentals over three months, which means that two monthly rentals only may be required as an extra guarantee, to be added to the legal, one-month rent deposit. One of the most important modifications concerns the execution of evictions, and, in this case, the rule that modifies the Royal Decree is not the Urban Letting Law, but the Civil Procedure Law. According to this item, when an owner tries to evict a tenant, or other persons occupying their property, the Court may inform the defendant of the possibility of approaching Social Services, to see whether they can be considered to be in a situation of social vulnerability. If this vulnerability is believed to exist, the Court may suspend the eviction date for up to one month, or three months if the owner of the property is actually a company. But if a rental contract is in force, prior to the new regulations, the rules applicable will be those in force when the contract was signed, so the rules will continue with those established under the previous law. This article is not intended to be legal advice, but merely conveys general information related to legal issues.

QUALIFYING Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) are widely seen as beneficial for expatriate retirees, but are, by no means, a onesize-fits-all solution. Here we explore some advantages and disadvantages.
Tax efficiency Currently, Spain residents can transfer UK pensions into an EU/EEA-based QROPS, without taxation. However, transfers outside the bloc attract the 25% UK ‘overseas transfer charge’ of 25%. This may be extended post-Brexit, so time may be limited for taxfree transfers. Funds in a QROPS are

QROPS: The pros and cons of transferring your UK pension
sheltered from future UK taxes on income and gains, and lifetime pension allowance penalties. QROPS funds only become taxable once you start taking benefits in your country of residence. When accessing QROPS, or taking UK pension lump sums and income, the general Spanish income-tax rates apply for residents. These vary, regionally, but range from 19% to 48%. Depending on your situation, it may be more beneficial to reinvest UK pension funds into an alternative tax-efficient structure that is compliant in Spain, so make sure you explore your options. Flexible access UK pensions can be restrictive, but many QROPS let you take as much cash or income as you like, whenever you want. With this freedom comes greater potential to exhaust your funds, unlike an UK annuity or ‘final-salary’ pension, which provide a guaranteed income for life.
Diversification and investment choice QROPS usually offer more options than UK pensions for how your money is invested, and are not as over-exposed to UK assets. You can choose a flexible investment plan, across a wide range of funds, to suit your circumstances, objectives, timeline and risk appetite. As the value of any investment can go down as well as up, this introduces an element of risk to your retirement funds that is absent from a guaranteed annuity. However, an active, well-diversified investment approach can manage risk. Estate planning flexibility While most UK pensions are only payable to your spouse on death, QROPS offers the option to include other heirs. QROPS may also offer some protection from UK inheritance tax, for non-UKresident heirs. Multi-currency options UK pensions usually pay out in sterling, but some QROPS
allow you to invest funds and make withdrawals in more than one currency. This is a major advantage for British expatriates in Spain, because it reduces dependence on pound/euro exchange rates, and removes currencyconversion costs. Freedom from UK rules… to a point Funds in a QROPS are no longer governed by UK pension legislation, so are protected from future changes to UK rules. However, you could still be subject to UK legislation, and taxation, if you transfer funds again to an unapproved scheme, or permanently return to the UK. Where HMRC deems its rules have been broken, it can charge a 55% tax penalty on the transfer amount, potentially, even if you had moved funds before the rules changed. Regulated, tailored advice is crucial Overseas pension transfers are a complex area, and
a key target for pension scams, so regulated advice is essential. Take care to explore your full range of options, to establish the most suitable pension solution for your particular circumstances. If you decide to transfer, you will need specialist guidance to find a suitable product, navigate the cross-border tax and jurisdiction issues, and ultimately secure your long-term financial security, in this ever-changing pension landscape. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Why these young residents cannot vote in elections MORE than 500,000 youngsters were unable to vote in last weekend’s General Election, even though they have lived in Spain all their lives.
Safia El Aaddam, pictured, was born in the north-eastern city of Tarragona, and, though the 23-year-old is politically active, she will not be able to cast her vote in the European, regional and municipal elections on 26th May, either! “I’ve lived here for years and fulfilled my duties, but I do not have the same rights,” she said. Although Safia was born in Spain, she does not have Spanish citizenship, which is an essential requirement to vote in elections. To be granted citizenship, according to the civil code, it is not enough to be born in Spanish territory. One parent must have citizenship, or both parents must be stateless or unknown, all of which does not apply to Safia. In legal terms, unlike some other countries, Spain operates on the basis of jus sanguinis (Latin for right of blood), rather than jus soli (Latin for right of the soil). According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), collected in the 2018 Immigration Report by the Barcelona Centre for International Affairs (CIDOB),
520,000 people in Spain do not have Spanish citizenship, even though they were born in the country. Safia began the process to become a Spanish citizen when she was 18, after she saw her friends going to vote, but she couldn’t. Yet the right to vote is just one of the reasons why she wants Spanish citizenship. With it, Safia would have the same rights as EU citizens; she would be able to study on the Erasmus exchange programme, and take civil servant exams. But even though Sofia meets the requirements needed to apply for “nationality by residence,” which, in her case, are one year of residency, showing good
conduct and a sufficient degree of integration, she is still waiting to receive it. And she isn’t alone. In 2017, 400,000 people were stuck in limbo, awaiting citizenship, according to data from the Ministry of Defence and the Spanish ombudsman. In 2015, online registration was introduced to speed up the application process, but it hasn’t had the desired effect. The process still takes years, and not just because of technical issues. What’s more, applicants must pass two exams to be granted Spanish citizenship by residence. One is a Spanish language test and the other is about the Spanish Constitution and culture. It costs €200 to sit the exams,
introduced in 2015. But because Safia studied in Spain, she is waiting for this requirement, proposed in a draft ministerial order in 2016, to be waived. According to the CIDOB’s 2018 immigration report, 6.2 million foreigners (13.3% of the total population) live in Spain. This number includes 2.1m people, who have Spanish citizenship but were born elsewhere; over four million who were born outside of Spain and do not have Spanish citizenship, along with 520,000 people, who, like Safia, were born in Spain but lack citizenship. Only people with Spanish citizenship can vote in the elections, although there
are exceptions. EU citizens, for instance, can vote in municipal and European elections, and can also be elected as mayors and local councillors. Foreigners, from 12 countries, can also vote in municipal elections in Spain, provided they are the registered on the municipal roll and can show they have lived in the country for five, uninterrupted years. These special agreements, signed in 2011, apply to people from Bolivia, Cabo Verde, Chile, Colombia, South Korea, Ecuador, Iceland, Norway, New Zealand, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago. But to have a vote in the municipal elections on 26th May, EU nationals and citizens of the 12 countries covered by the special agreements, have to register in the Electoral Census for Foreign Residents in Spain (CERE). This process must be done ahead of time. Jorge Hincapié, from Colombia, failed to register in time for the 2011 elections, but he was one of the 464,074 migrants who voted in the 2015 municipal election. The 27-year-old, who came to Spain when he was eight, began the process to apply for Spanish citizenship last year, so that he can sit civil servant exams in the future.

Alexander Armstrong and Ashley Banjo are once again joining forces to persuade a brand new line-up of celebrities to take to the stage and bare all for the biggest and most daring extravaganza yet, all to raise awareness of the importance of early health checks in preventing prostate and testicular cancer. The BAFTA nominated 90-minute special sees Love Island winner Jack Fincham, Emmerdale’s Kelvin Fletcher, King of the Jungle Joe Pasquale, Strictly Come Dancing’s Gorka Marquez, snooker legend Willie Thorne, Crimewatch’s Rav Wilding, Dancing on Ice star Matt Evers and ex-Chelsea footballer Jason Cundy prepare to put on their dancing shoes and take off their thongs. All of them have stories to tell about how cancer has touched the lives of them or those around them. The men need to up their game after hearing the women are planning their own extravaganza, so Alexander and Ashley pull out all the stops to marshal the men through their moves and whip them into shape to perform a frenzy-inducing striptease. They hope to build on the impact of last year to keep key health messages about regular checks for testicular and prostate cancer at the forefront of the nation’s minds. Former premiership footballer Jason Cundy explains: “I’m doing this because I’ve had testicular cancer and I’ve been there. I’ve survived. When I had the call to come and do this it was a very easy decision to make.” TV presenter Rav Wilding says: “My dad’s got prostate cancer and I want to raise as much awareness as possible and if it means taking off my clothes, then that’s what’s got to be done.” Ashley and Alexander gather the class of 2019 together to see if they are up to the challenge ahead, having organised a little ice-breaker, literally - by taking the men to a nearby ice rink and challenging them to shed their inhibitions, by ripping off their trousers on skates. Jack says: “I’ve just skated around on the ice in my pants. I mean if you did that anywhere else you’d be kicked out.” Kelvin says: “I can’t believe I’ve danced around in my thong already. Day one! What’s day two going to be like?!” Blown away by their early confidence, Ashley takes them to a gym in East London to unveil the brand-new upscaled routine for the very first time and to introduce a new member to the team, Strictly professional Gorka Marquez. After seeing the complexity of the choreography and athleticism required, Gorka quickly realises his current back injury means that he is going to have to pull out and Ashley is left with some big shoes to fill.

Ric (Hugh Quarshie) is forced to leave theatre early when his granddaughter, Darla (Naomi Katiyo), arrives on the ward feeling unwell. With Essie’s (Kaye Wragg) help, Ric realises there is more going on than meets the eye, and allows Darla to open up and tackle her pregnancy head on. Kian (Ramin Karimloo) can’t put his finger on where he knows Jac’s (Rosie Marcel) patient from and employs Cameron (Nic Jackman) and Nicky (Belinda Owusu) to dig into her past. But when they unearth the patient’s secret, Kian’s private pastime is revealed.

While Miri relishes the opportunity of a day trip together, Caroline seems more reluctant and as the day rolls on, it becomes quite clear that she dreads spending time alone with her daughter. Miri tries to confront Caroline when suddenly, mid argument, they hit a stumbling block in the road. Stranded in the middle of nowhere, Caroline is finally forced to admit her true feelings towards her daughter. The tense situation isn’t helped by the fact that Caroline has left her mobile phone at home and cannot call for help. Unbeknownst to her, Oscar has taken this opportunity to read her messages and find out the true identity of her secret lover. His only distraction is the mysterious Scandinavian man from the power company who has arrived to check the meter... Meanwhile Mandy continues her crusade to get her best friend back. And it turns out that today isn’t any old day. It’s the anniversary of Lara’s murder and the murky events surrounding that night are starting to come in to focus.

Our Dementia Choir With Vicky McClure Thursday 9th May, BBC1, 20.00
In the concluding episode Vicky continues on her journey to discover the true extent of music’s power in combating dementia. With the choir still glowing from their first public performance in front of a handful of family and friends, Vicky announces that in a matter of weeks they are going to perform again, only this time it will be at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham - in front of 2,000 people. Long before they get there, the very real challenges faced daily by the choir threaten to derail the entire project. Working with some of the country’s leading experts, Vicky and the choir also take part in a series of scientific experiments. Joining Dr Lauren Gascoyne from the University of Nottingham’s imaging centre, choir members Julie, Maureen, Mick and Chris take part in a world-first experiment with a cuttingedge scanner. Research has suggested that when people with dementia listen to music the communication pathways in their brains that are damaged can function as normal. So our four willing volunteers are scanned, to see how music affects their brains. Ahead of the final show, the choir come together, try to keep the nerves at bay and put on the performance of their lives.

In the tenth pisode of this new series, three entrepreneurs come together to discover what our customers think of their precious products. They’re nervous, but ready to watch the customers unboxing, testing and giving their feedback on what they like, dislike and what they think could be improved for each invention. In today’s episode, we meet Stevie, Stefan and Grant, all hoping to get a high score from our customers to become today’s winner. A keen outdoor enthusiast and lover of camping underneath the stars, Stevie’s product is a fully adjustable hammock with tarpaulin and additional accessories to enjoy a night in the great outdoors. Stefan’s invention is a kitchen gadget which he hopes will save on the washing up. A colander with pop up silicone base which flips down to allow the colander to drain as normal and flips up to become a sealed dish for serving the food. Grant’s business idea was inspired by his pet dog Lola. She loves to get wet so he wanted to develop a towel to dry her coat quickly and effectively. His creation is a microfiber glove towel which aims to remove dirt and absorb water from pets. At the end of the episode, presenter Lucy Alexander reveals who has come third, second and first place, and presents the winner with the Customer Is Always Right winner’s trophy.

Love Your Garden ITV1, 20.00
In this half-hour cutdown from the original episode, Alan Titchmarsh and the team head to Southampton to turn a featureless suburban back garden into a super-stylish contemporary outdoor space. The garden is for the Jordan family, who are coping with the loss of a devoted mother and wife. Shelly-Ann died of cancer in April 2016 aged just 39 - leaving husband Tony and their two children Tyler (17) and Amelia (12). Shelly desperately wanted to create a garden for her children to enjoy with their friends and family but died before she could make this dream a reality. Alan, Katie, Frances and David take on the challenge of creating a garden that will both appeal to teens and tweens, keep their mother’s memory alive and help the whole family through the still very raw grieving process. They pack the space with wonderful ideas and use gorgeous planting to make it one of the most striking gardens of the series.

It’s so, so important for girls all ages to check their breasts.” At the start of the programme, Coleen and Victoria introduce Laurie, Megan, Lisa, Danielle and Crissy to Ashley and he decides to put any nerves to the test by asking the ladies to stand on the stage for an exploration of self-confidence. First up is Crissy who heads straight to the ‘confident’ side of the stage and promptly lifts her top up. Megan also heads towards the confident sign as she says she is more confident posing in swimwear than in her clothes. She says: “When I post on Instagram half naked pictures…I know I get a lot of love and likes for that…but me standing here fully clothed, just my personality laid bare, I’m not so comfortable.” When Lisa takes to the stage she finds herself extremely emotional when talking about her reasons for doing the show, as she explains she has just dropped her mum off at the hospital. She says: “My mum was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix. My mum left her smear test for five years and in five years it had spread to her lymph node glands, collar bone, all of her cervix. Until she was diagnosed, she didn’t feel anything. The minute she knew, it tore her apart.” Inspired by each other’s stories, the ladies are excited to discuss their routine with Ashley, who reveals he is feeling the pressure to make their performance exactly how they want it. They watch last year’s show together and feelings bubble over for Crissy as she is reminded why she is taking part. She says: “When the doctor said cancer I actually looked around thinking, ‘Who’s he talking to?’ And then, the reason it wasn’t detected is because normally women go for smear tests, but I had an hysterectomy when I was 24 and I didn’t think I needed a smear test.” The ladies and Ashley discuss whether they need to up the ante this year and reveal even more.

Earth From Space BBC1, 21.00
In the last episode - at a time when the Earth’s surface is changing faster than ever in human history - cameras show cities grow, forests disappear and glaciers melt. But these images can also inspire us to look after our fragile home. In the ever-growing grey of cities, one man is feeding thousands of parakeets. In Sumatra a female orangutan and her daughter face life in a forest under threat, while in Tanzania local people use satellites to re-plant a forest, securing the future for a family of chimpanzees.

Boy rescued from kids’ danger game
A YOUNG boy, playing with a group of British and Spanish children, had to be pulled out of a manhole on the street last Monday after a dangerous game they were playing went horribly wrong.
The youngsters had accessed the underground watering system on the Costa del Sol beach of Sabinillas, in Manilva, via an uncovered hole in the wall there. The underground system runs underneath the town and carries waste water to the sea, with manholes or grids on the streets above. Local sources say the kids lit some mattresses at the beach exit, causing a rapid blaze. But while most children
escaped to the beach, one Spanish child was unable to climb out in time. The flames and smoke forced him back into the waterway, where he became trapped underneath the La Colonia area of Sabinillas. Passers-by heard him screaming and called for back-up. Locals had to reach down into a drain to rescue the boy because smoke was bellowing from the manhole. He emerged, covered in black smoke, and had to be treated by an ambulance crew. “It was horrible,” said one witness. “There was smoke everywhere and it was chaotic. We did not know if more children were down there, because they could have easily have died.” Firemen eventually put out the blaze.
Driver’s nightclub fury
A MOTORIST, accused of driving his car into the front of a nightclub, deliberately, after being thrown out, has been arrested by police. The 44-year-old, reportedly a resident of Arenas, is said to have sustained minor injuries. One publication said the man was with his cousin at
the club, in the La Pañoleta industrial estate in VelezMalaga, when bouncers asked the pair to leave, at around 6am. A fight broke out, it is believed, and the suspect was accused of going to his car and ramming it into the front of the club, leaving both badly damaged.

‘Smart’ speed cars arrive in two years
ALL cars sold after the year 2022 in Spain, and the other European Union members, will have built-in “smart speed assistants”.
That means the vehicle will automatically adjust its speed to the limits applicable to the road on which it is travelling. The move had already been proposed by Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) a year ago. But, for now, the plan is that car drivers will be able to deactivate it if they wish, but drivers of coaches, buses, lorries and vans will not be able to switch off. It is not yet known when, if at all, European Parliament will opt to make it compulsory for
the devices to be activated at all times. Other “smart” systems, which all vehicles manufactured from 2022 will be required to have as standard, include advanced-braking systems, distraction warning systems, devices which warn drivers if they are drifting out of the correct lane, reverse detection devices, an interface which stops the car engine from switching on if the driver is over the alcohol limit, an emergency stop signal, and a “black box” to record accident data. The “smart speed assistant” alone would cut road deaths by 20%, according to the European Parliament. The European Commission has revealed that in 2018 alone, over 25,000 people were killed in crashes on
roads in the 28 member States, and 135,000 were seriously injured. Jesús Monclús, Spain’s Road Safety and Prevention manager at the Mapfre Foundation, the social action arm of Mapfre insurance, believes that if every car in the country were equipped with a speed assistant, that blocked them from going faster than the limit, around 400 fewer deaths per year would occur. Some makes and models already have this system in place, including the Ford Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy, many of which are manufactured at the Valencia province plant of Almussafes. They have had the system built-in for the last three years, and the Ford Focus is next on the list.
as well as having people to accompany victims of gender violence to hospital. The services will be available round the clock, every day of the year, and there will be translators avail-
able to help non-Spanish speakers. Madrid City Council, expected to approve the centre imminently, expects to spend around €1.3 million a year on the service.
Care centre planned for sexual-violence victims THE first 24-hour care centre for sexual-violence victims in Spain, providing psychological, health and legal care in several languages, could be up and running in Madrid by September.
The centre, based on UK Rape Crisis centres, will provide information and telephone help, psychological support, emergency health care and decision-making support,

Moving forward with Movimiento del Pueblo
THIS month, a new party, Movimiento del Pueblo, will be standing against the traditional PSOE, PP, Podemos, Coalición Canaria et al, in the local elections. Everyone can vote, if on the padrón and census of their local ayuntamiento.
Movimiento del Pueblo would like to introduce their new representative, Colette Barton, whose role in the party is to become the voice for the Englishspeaking residents. The party’s president, Juan Hernández, believes that many of these people are never heard, and they feel that their votes don’t count, when they are, actually, very important. Colette has lived in Tenerife for many years, but, like a lot of expatriates here, doesn’t profess to be fluent in Spanish. She works, mainly, in touristic

areas, with English-speaking people. She would be the first to admit that her knowledge of the Spanish language should be better, and, by no means, classes herself as a politician. However, her role in the party is to be a point of contact for the English-speaking people, to relay their concerns, requests and questions to the party president, for him to take further action. Currently, the most-common question presented to the party is: “Why vote for you, when you sound the same as all the rest?” You are right; a lot of the parties’ aims do seem to be very similar. However, has any other party shown an interest in you? For years, the same parties are elected with not many changes, so why not allow a new party the opportunity to take the lead? We would like to invite you all to meet with us, to allow us to introduce ourselves, discuss our objectives, listen to your opinions, and answer any questions.

Guardia fakes threatened wife of major drug baron
33 CW
Mummified woman’s body discovered after five years
TWO men, posing as Guardia Civil officers, each face a 13year prison sentence for kidnapping a drug-baron’s wife in Galicia.
Along with another man, who was never identified, they visited the Vilagarcia de Arousa home of the wife of 49-year-old drugs kingpin Jose Ramon Dorgambide, alias El Panadero. At that time, Jose was behind bars for landing six tons of cocaine in an operation which featured 20 men being arrested. The bogus Guardia Civil officers tricked their way into the house by telling a domestic employee they were there to deliver a summons. Once inside, she and El Panadero’s wife were tied up, hooded and
taken to an abandoned warehouse, where the impostors threatened to kill El Panadero’s wife unless she told them where the money was hidden. One held a pistol to her head, and, showing her a photo of her daughter, threatened to mutilate her. “Which finger shall we
start with?” they asked. El Panadero’s wife finally gave in, and, once the money was in the abductors’ possession, both women were driven back to the house. “We have friends in the Guardia Civil, so we’ll know what you tell them,” was their captors’ final warning.
THE mummified body of an 83-year-old woman, who died five years ago, was found last Thursday in Madrid by the National Police, after they had received a report from the deceased’s niece.
The corpse was found in the La Guindalera area of the Salamanca district, and results from the post-mortem revealed that she passed away in early 2014, possibly from a stroke.
Spanish press say that some neighbours had considered calling the police after she had piled up a debt, running into thousands of euros, for community fees. Also, the doorman had stored dozens of the woman’s letters, which had been accumulating in the mailbox. However, the police were never notified because some thought the woman could have moved because she owned a house abroad. Her niece was the only person who actually notified the police, as she hadn’t heard from her aunt in a long time.
SPANISH police immobilised a “pirate” taxi after the driver tried to charge three tourists €12, for a trip which constituted a 100-metre walk! Algeciras Local Police, in the south of Spain, leapt into action after spotting three people going up to a Renault Scenic near the ferry terminal. They say the taxi driver
planned to charge the three tourists €4 each for the trip, and, even then, he had to make a detour to make the distance! The local driver, who is unlicensed, now faces a €1,380 fine for breaking local regulations, and also the cost of recovering his vehicle from the municipal compound, where it was taken by a recovery truck.
Hotel worker accused of raping girl, aged 5 Thieving cabbie stung A HOTEL employee was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Granada last Saturday, for, allegedly, raping a five-year-old girl. Both the parents and the child are foreigners, as was the unidentified man, who was known to them. A medical examination of the child confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted. It also suggested the possibility that the alleged rapist had abused her previously. The man was apparently linked to the parents through business, and it is thought that this is how he was able to gain access to the child. Hotel workers claimed
they had seen him acting strangely with the girl on Saturday morning. The alarm was raised about the man’s alleged crimes, after he stole money from the hotel cashier

Drag queen escapes gang attack on him
POPULAR drag queen Satin Greco was attacked by a group of men in the heart of gay-friendly Torremolinos last Saturday, as he walked home from work at around 7am.
Greco, well-known on the Costa del Sol, was set upon by the men, who were said to have shouted “fag”. They then pounced on him in an attempt to rob the drag artiste in La Nogalera, a neighbourhood deemed
a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. Fortunately, the commotion was heard by staff from the nearby Eden Copas bar, who dashed over to intervene. Others joined in immediately, and the assailants soon vanished. The suspects were identified as “foreign”, but their nationality was not known. Greco was taken to the local health centre, where he was treated for wounds, including scratches and bruised fingers. He did not work at the weekend, as scheduled, and has reported the homophobic incident to Torremolinos police.
Mother, baby and boy, 3, killed by apartment fire
A MOTHER and her two children died when fire swept through their L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, fourthfloor apartment in Barcelona.
Her son, aged three, died with her in the fire, and, although firemen evacuated her daughter of six months, the child died hours later in hospital. Emergency service sources later revealed that two other
occupants of the apartment, the children’s grandmother and aunt, survived the fire with minor injuries. Initial investigations suggest that the fire was caused by a power overload, with too many appliances plugged into an adapter, disclosed the Mossos d’Esquadra, Cataluña’s regional police later revealed. A police spokesman also stressed that there was no evidence of the family being “energy poor”. There was no illegal electricity
connection, and the family were not squatters, clarified L’Hospitalet’s Deputy Mayor, Frances Belver. “The family had a rent contract and a regular power supply,” he said. Firemen explained afterwards that the apartment on the fourth floor of a block of six was full of highlyinflammable material, including furniture and mattresses. “This was a violent fire that burned rapidly,” added the Deputy Mayor.

Let the drug-traffickers go about their business, or get ready for blood!
A CADIZ drug-trafficker has warned that there will be more bloodshed on Spanish streets, if drug-trafficking is made harder. In an exclusive interview with El Español, the Spanish national newspaper, the hash-trafficker, who has worked in the business for 12 years, said drug bosses will turn more to debtcollecting if their trade routes are affected, increasingly, and profits dry up. The self-described “boss”, referred to as Oscar, made the comments after a police crackdown in the Campo de Gibraltar has led to around 3,000 arrests since last July. Some 407 extra troops from the National Police and Guardia Civil were added to the area, while 100,000kg of hashish were seized, leaving many gangs disbanded. “If the guards do not leave soon, the deaths will come,” said Oscar, who has 50 men working for him. He told the newspaper: “I do not have doubts. The traffickers will start killing each other because of the debts. I do not owe anything to my boys, but other bosses owe theirs.” For three years, Óscar has been leader of a gang, operating in the surroundings of the Campo de Gibraltar region, in Cádiz. But he added: “If the market flow does not reopen, those in the lowest echelons, the vigilantes, the landlords or the drivers, will want to collect pending payments for work they have carried out. “If the bosses refuse, someone will pay with his life because people have to eat, and they do not know how to do anything else in life, other than move hashish.” Before becoming a boss, Oscar worked for other organisations, including the infamous Antonio and Francisco Tejón, or “Los Castañas”. Police consider Antonio Tejón, youngest of the brothers, the greatest hashish-trafficker in history. “It’s true, he’s the Dad,” confirmed Oscar. “He’s the Pablo Escobar of La Línea. I learned from him and moved up the ranks.” The crackdown has led dealers to move operations towards the Guadalquivir River and Huelva.
Oscar, a prolific trafficker, who in two months cleared 1,800kg of hashish, pocketing €2m in the process, has just been released from prison, and is awaiting trial after being picked up at the end of last summer. But he warned that firearms would “whistle” if the Strait of Gibraltar was not reopened fully. “The chiefs have a serious problem if the Strait is not reopened,” he told El Español. “If they do not go back to work, the weapons, even bazookas, will begin to whistle, especially in La Línea.” Oscar also revealed how much he pays each of his workers, depending on which part of the operation they carry out. The drivers who transport the bales are paid €15,000 per trip. The people who collect the bales on beaches are each paid €3,000, while the boat drivers get €20,000-30,000 each. Oscar’s first job in the hashish business was as a “watcher” on a beach. They paid him €800. Then, he says: “I went up like foam.” He went on to blast other smugglers for operating in the daytime and thinking they were “untouchables”, yet, he said: “They are the cause of what is happening to us right now.” Oscar spent six months inside the notorious Botafuegos prison in Algeciras, which held at least 500 local dealers and traffickers. He revealed that they all knew each other. “There was not a fight between them, and whoever wanted to, had access to money, cocaine, hashish and mobile phones,” he said. But in a final warning, he warned that the coast of southern Spain would turn into Medellin (the most notorious drug cartel of all) if his trade were interrupted, continually. Of its leader, Antonio El Castaña, who has been locked up since last summer, he said: “Everyone is waiting for him to leave prison. If he starts moving hashish, as before, the business will be reactivated for everyone. “If not, this is going to be Medellín, with dead people left in the streets.”

A good-looking lad! WHO is this handsome boy, you may ask? Say hello to Sprite. He’s a very sweet, handsome and loving boy, who is still looking for his forever home. He has been at K9 for a while.
Before he arrived at K9, whatever it was that happened to Sprite has made him a little nervous of new people, so he does need some time to get to know you. Once he does, he is very content, either out walking, or playing in the kennels. When he is out he loves to explore, but will stop for the occasional treat! He can be walked off-lead, which gives him a chance to run around and burn off some energy. At the moment, Sprite is currently sharing with two female dogs, Sally and Olga, but, quite soon, they are both being adopted by the same family, which means he will be left on his own. It is wonderful news for our two girls, but not so great for little Sprite, who won’t understand why he is suddenly on his own, again. Sprite was previously sharing with another female called Willow, who also got adopted by a lovely family. He is best

He is quite obedient, and will come when you call him. He loves his food and always looks forward to his meal time every day, sitting for you before you feed him. He likes to play, and grabs whichever toy he can, running around with it and having fun. He does like attention, and will jump up for a hug, and a nice rub under his face.
Fiona, from K9 said: “I really enjoy spending time with Sprite, inside and outside the kennels. He has learnt to trust me, which does make it easier, of course. The feeling it gives is priceless, and I know he can make someone else feel the same way. He really shows you when he trusts you, and it is a lovely experience. If you are interested in getting to know Sprite, I would recommend calling here a few times to walk him first, and let him get to know you. I promise you, once he does, you will fall in love!”

Thank you, Paul and Sophi
PAUL and Sophi are two, lovely, German children, whose father visited the refuge, a while ago. He explained to them the work we do with the abandoned dogs, and the children decided that they would like to help us.
They have been very busy selling home-grown beetroots, and paintings that they have done themselves, to raise money for the dogs. We are so happy about what Paul and Sophi have achieved, and we would like to say a very big thank-you to them both. Without the help of our valued volunteers and supporters, our work would be so much harder. We see, daily, so many sad cases of abused and neglected dogs at the refuge, but, for all the bad, it’s amazing to have such brilliant people helping the dogs lead healthy and happy new lives. Dog walking
Our dogs love to go out for a walk, so, if you do have some spare time during our opening hours, then please come and visit us, and make a dog very happy. They love some exercise and TLC. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. By Tara Scarlata IN the main port of Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria, there is an impressive building, which is very modern in design. The outside comes alive at night and is beautifully lit, which entices you to find out what is inside.
Opened in winter 2017, it’s an amazing aquarium, full of ocean life from all over our planet. It is easily accessible from Tenerife by ferry, and from the southern resorts of Gran Canaria, by a bus transfer, which can be bought as a twin ticket. It’s also great if you arrive on a cruise ship, as it’s only a few minutes’ walk from the dock. We weren’t quite sure what to expect inside, but, after visiting Siam Park and Loro Parque, and knowing this was the same group, we had pretty-high expectations. It’s easy to enter. There is a ticket office, and then you are straight in via a small cave. You have to cross a glass walkway, and you can see the fish beneath your feet. This was great for kids (and some apprehensive adults), who felt as though they were walking on water. You start in a big, open-plan jungle area, full of beautiful plants, tanks buzzing with life, and rocks, trees and bridges, to feel as though you really are in the jungle. Here you can find the crocodiles, fish from the Amazon, electric eels and a fantastic tree full of chameleons (if you can spot them with their camouflage). There are digital signs dotted all around, telling you interesting information about what you are looking at. On the way to the next area,

don’t miss the Axolotl, or Mexican walking fish, which are critically endangered. Are they fish, or are they lizards? I’ll let you make up your own mind. Next, you will head to the beach area, where there are some of the most amazing creatures here. The Pig-nose turtles are incredible, and I’ve never seen anything like them.
Finding Nemo... carry on along, and there is a great tank full of tropical fish where you can spot him and his friends, with small tunnels that can be crawled through, so you feel as though you are in the sea with them. Ahead of you there is a huge tube, but we will come back to that later. In this area, you can also stop for a coffee or a bite to eat, with the
most amazing view of the underwater world. Carrying on along, you discover the deep-sea zone, and you find yourself in a dome in the big tank. This is where you will see the bigger species; several types of sharks, huge rays and turtles, with big schools of fish, everywhere you look. Further along, there are a few more portholes into the big tank, and you will discover some of the deepsea creatures. Then, from darkness, you walk around the corner and your jaw will drop - a massive, curvedglass wall into the biggest tank I have ever seen, which is 36 metres long, and nearly eight metres high. It’s so impressive, and it makes you feel really small. You could spend all day in here, watching the sharks swimming straight at you, seeing the groupers glide past, and watching the rays interacting with each other.
Heading out from here, you find the seahorses, starfish and the jellyfish in a beautifully-lit-up display, which is mesmerising. As you carry on round, you end up back where the huge tube was full of fish, moray eels and rays. The walkway spirals down around the tube, and there are huge bean bags at the bottom which you can sit on, and watch everything around you. You head through the freshwater tunnel and find yourself back in the jungle area, and find the “danger area” with poisonous frogs, millipedes and scorpions every little boy’s dream! If you wish, you can go around the whole aquarium again. There are so many exhibitions to see, that going around a couple of times is recommended. The Nemo snack bar and Nestor restaurant are both great, with everything from a quick sandwich, to a full à-la-carte menu. This is one of the most modern aquariums in the world. As a scuba diver, I love the underwater world, and I have never been anywhere as impressive. It’s also nice to see that they are doing work in here with endangered species, to help reintroduce them into the wild. Open every day from 9am6pm, this is a must for the family visiting Gran Canaria, or on a day trip from Tenerife (you can buy a twin ticket with Loro Parque). Allow yourself a good few hours for your visit, to enjoy the whole experience, fully.

Carlin - the restaurant worth driving to by Paul Waller
“I’VE found a little gem here”, I thought to myself, as I left this restaurant with a big grin, a contented stomach, and some good memories to talk about. So, you are asking, what restaurant is this? Well, the name is Carlin, a relativelynew establishment, which has only been open for six months. During that time, the right atmosphere and menu have been created, for all nationalities and families to enjoy. Where can you find this restaurant? Well, I suppose you can say it falls into the category of being one of those special restaurants that we find “up the mountain”, for those of us living or visiting this wonderful island. But, in reality, it’s only 5-10 minute drive from the TF1, just above San Isidro. It can be found 50 metres down from the Cepsa garage, by the roundabout which leads to either Charco del Pino or
Granadilla. Is it worth the drive? Most definitely, and you will not be disappointed. Parking is available right outside, which, these days, is a pleasure, and there is plenty of it, too. On walking into the restaurant there is a spacious, outdoor area with lovely surroundings, for those warm evenings, and also an authentic inside area with a modern feel to it. On arrival, we were greeted by a smartly-uniformed staff member with a big smile, and in the corner of the room, by the large, open bar, was one of the evening’s singers, with an already eager audience singing along. Once seated at our table, we were handed a very professional, bound menu, written in Spanish and English. The variety of dishes intrigued me because of the different flavours available, from typical Canarian to Latin American dishes, from Peru and Venezuela. As well as a selection of Thai dishes and speciality burgers, they also offer BBQ grill options, different types of paella, and a set, daytime menu for €7.90.

The two chefs in the kitchen are from Venezuela, but I will come back to them, later. A bottle of wine was ordered and poured, and our attention turned to the starters. We ordered Venezuelan Tequenos, cheese wrapped in a special wheat flour and deep fried. This was presented very well, and tasted as good as it looked. The restaurant was now bustling, and the tables started to fill up. On the next table, a gentleman was eating the sirloin steak special, so we both decided to order the same. It was accompanied by crispy chips and a fresh assortment of sauteed vegetables, which were very tasty. I know it was only a sirloin steak, but, if a restaurant cannot get a steak right, then it says a lot. Medium-rare was our preference, and mediumrare it was. The meat was lean and tender, and melted in the mouth. It was presented beautifully on a black slate, with fresh asparagus as a subtle garnish, and chips in miniature basket. We were then offered a

selection of home-made desserts, and, because of the chef’s background, the staff recommended the “Tres Leche” cake. This was a light sponge, soaked in three types of milk; heavy cream, evaporated and condensed. It was a Venezuelan speciality, which, as you can guess, was very rich and sweet, but perfect for sharing. By this time, the second singer had taken over the corner, and his performance had a few guests dancing. It wasn’t long before most of the bar were singing and dancing to a mixture of Latin and English songs, which created a warm and enthralling atmosphere. We joined in with the fun without realising it, and felt so welcome. All this entices customers to return, over and over again. You must also try the tequila with orange and cinnamon. When the
night was drawing to an end, we paid the bill. For under €40 for the night’s food and drink, for both of us, it was a lovely surprise, and what value for money it was, too. So it was time for us to leave, with a wave to the staff, and the other guests around the bar. We left with music in our ears and smiles on our faces, and that’s when I thought: “I’ve found a little gem here!” Carlin restaurant is open 12-4pm and 7-11pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Closed Mondays. WE are often asked how much it costs to matriculate a car, when, in reality, what the individual really wants/needs, is to transfer ownership of a Spanish-registered car. Matriculation is a word often mentioned in conversations, or on social media, by people who don’t really know what they are talking about. But we will clarify the differences, and what action must be taken.
3rd May 2019 - 9th May 2019
Matriculation and transfer of car ownership in Spain Matriculation (matriculación) This is what must happen when a vehicle is purchased from another country, normally within the European Union, or a person who has brought a foreign-registered car to Spain, and then wants to sell it. It can be a relatively simple and straightforward process, provided the rules are followed, exactly. The first thing to do is visit your local ITV station with the car. Normally, cars bought in any EU country will not have any problems with passing an ITV. However, should the car come from outside the EU, then things change and can become more complicated. To matriculate a car from the EU involves a lot of paperwork
(welcome to Spain!), and it will be necessary for you to present the following documents at the ITV station: *The log book/car registration document/technical specification documents, originals and copies *The vehicle’s invoice for the vehicle, again original, and translated into Spanish. It is not specified in Tráfico, but it is recommended to have the document officially translated *The Modelo 620, which you are able to do on the internet *The proof of payment of the taxes, regarding the above document *The Solicitud de matriculación from Tráfico, or ask a gestoria to do this for you, at a cost, of course!
*The original papers for the car acquired outside Spain *A certificate of the technical characteristics of the vehicle inspection, with the blue and pink copies, which is carried out by an engineer. These are the basic rules in a very simple form. Transfer of ownership (traspaso) This happens when the car is already on Spanish plates, and has been sold or purchased by an individual or company. The process is similar, although not as lengthy as the matriculation, which can sometimes take many months to complete. *Complete the modelo 620 and pay the appropriate taxes. This needs to be
presented in the tax office, along with copy documents for the buyer and seller, and car papers *With an appointment at Tráfico, present all original documents for the purchaser, copies for the seller along with the papers from Hacienda and car paperwork. All being well, the ownership namechange can be completed. The most common reasons for a failed transfer of ownership are: an embargo, outstanding road taxes, or a reserva (outstanding finance), incorrect or missing paperwork. Our recommendations are to use a registered Tráfico collaborator, to do the job for you.
night-time urination. Drinking too many fluids at night, regardless of what type, can also lead to nocturia. Cutting out all fluids, two to four hours before bed, is recommended, as well as steering clear of caffeine and alcohol in the evening, to prevent late-night bathroom trips, if you’ve been bothered my night-time peeing. Certain medications Some common medications, used to treat oedema (swelling) and high blood pressure, are also diuretics. If you’re on these, take them six hours, or more, before bed. Untreated diabetes When you have diabetes, the excess glucose, or blood sugar, rushes to your kidneys,
leading water to enter as well. So you might find your bladder filling up more quickly than usual. If your constant peeing happens throughout the day, as well as at night, and large amounts of fluid come out each time, you might want to get a urinalysis test, which will reveal how much sugar is in your urine. An enlarged prostate As men grow older, something called benign prostatic hyperplasia, an enlargement of the walnut-shaped prostate gland, responsible for urinary continence, can occur. This can be because of changing levels of hormones, including less testosterone production, or an accumulation of dihydrotestosterone. An enlarging prostate gland can cause pressure on your bladder, making you think it needs emptying more often than it does. An enlarged prostate can also cause other urinary symptoms, like issues with starting or stopping your flow, a weak stream, or the feeling you didn’t complete empty your bladder after peeing. An enlarged prostate can be treated with drugs that relax the bladder muscles. Similarly, irritants like spicy food, alcohol, and urinarytract infections can trick your bladder into thinking it’s full. Bladder problems will also likely show up as frequent urination throughout the day, not just at night, because of sexually-transmitted infections, or injuries. Other signs of a bladder infection including burning or tingling, fever, and bloody or cloudy urine.
To pee, or not to pee...
By Val Sainsbury HAVING a good night’s sleep interrupted by a nagging urge to use the bathroom is very annoying, and, from time to time, most of us experience this. But frequent urination may be a sign of health problems.
According to a new study, people who woke up at least once per night to use the loo were 40% more likely to have high blood pressure. And those who woke up multiple times, each night, were at an even greater risk. If you’re already at risk of hypertension, due to smoking, alcohol abuse, or genetics, then you may want to see your doctor, if you wake up several times a night to urinate. In fact, most people get up to pee at night, occasionally, but it becomes a problem when you experience daytime fatigue, as a result of interrupted sleep. Nocturia, or frequent nighttime urination, is generally defined as getting up at least once a night to pee. While getting up even once a night can be considered nocturia, it’s generally considered more bothersome to your quality of life when your nighttime bathroom breaks reach two or more times. Nocturia can result from one
of three possible reasons: your bladder is having a hard time holding urine, you’re producing more urine than usual during the day, or you’re producing more urine during the night. Sometimes, the latter is just a function of growing older, but, if it’s happening consistently more than once a night, or interfering with your ability to function the next day, the problem goes beyond normal ageing. While getting up to pee is annoying, it could also point toward a host of other underlying health problems. There are several causes of nocturia: Unrelated sleep problems The more you wake up, the
more opportunities you’ll have to notice you have to pee, and to empty your bladder. So, it may not actually be the urge to urinate that’s waking you up. You might just be waking up, anyway. Sleep apnoea, a condition in which your breathing pauses while you sleep, can wake you up throughout the night. One recent study found that treating sleep apnoea also treated nocturia. If you’re dealing with any other sleep issues, addressing them might help stop the peeing. Bad drinking habits Caffeine and alcohol are both diuretics, which increase your urine production, so drinking either of these, late in the day, could lead to excessive,

CD Tenerife
Tenerife scraping barrel
TWO defeats in a row have plunged Tenerife back into the league’s relegation battle in 18th place, just three points ahead of Lugo, as they face an uphill struggle to survive the rest of the season, and maintain their Segunda División place.
On paper, a visit to Extremadura was always going to be tricky, because both teams are at the wrong end of the table. But it was also a “must win” match that saw both have chances they didn’t take, and only the home team’s finishing separated them. The opening minutes saw both teams frantic, Tenerife trying to avoid conceding an early goal, as they have in their two previous encounters, and Extremadura trying to start fast with home advantage. Roberto Olabe, on the right, and Perea, on the left, sought to open the scoring, but the CDT defence, and Dani in goal, were up for the challenge and avoided any danger. Milla even had a chance from an early corner, but to no avail. The game entered a phase of alternate attacks, but the breakthrough came for the home team in the 24th minute, when Jorge Sáenz and Undabarrena tried to

stop Kike Márquez breaking through on goal, giving Extremadura a free-kick, and Sáenz a yellow card in the process. It was Márquez who stepped up to take the set-piece and scored a wonder goal from 30 yards out, beating the wall and Dani at his near post, with a glorious strike. The rest of the half didn’t see
too much action, although Extremadura had a chance to double their lead when Olabe was one on one with Dani. But on this occasion, the goalkeeper came out on top, and the teams went into half-time trailing by the one goal. The second half saw Extremadura frustrate Tenerife, as they were
happy to sit in possession and protect their lead. It meant that Tenerife had to take a few risks, to try to force something to happen. In the 58th minute, this ploy nearly came to fruition, as Nano chased the ball into the corner of the area, and released a shot that smashed against a post and rebounded across the open
goal, but then to safety! Just after this, it went from bad to worse for Tenerife, as Jorge Sáenz was involved in a second challenge with Kike Márquez, resulting in a second yellow card, which meant he was taking an early bath. With Tenerife a man fewer, Extremadura were keen to dominate, but the visitors refused to give up, and the last 30 minutes were endto-end, with chances for Montañes, who shot wide, and Olabe in the closing seconds, who put the ball over the bar. At the final whistle, the difference in teams was evident to see: jubilation for Extremadura, who had registered their fourth victory in a row, and despair for Tenerife, who had again battled bravely but had fallen short. Their run-in for the last six games is difficult, starting tomorrow in one of the biggest games of the season, away in Gran Canaria against the old enemy, Las Palmas. In any derby, the form book goes out of the window, and it could be just what Tenerife need to kick-start a good run of results to secure safety at the end of the season… well, hopefully anyway!

Free strike for Villa is a bonus by Leeds boss
Football
LEEDS manager Marcelo Bielsa, having been condemned by many for “spying” on opposition teams earlier this season, has been praised for his “sportsmanship”. It followed his remarkable gesture in a vital Championship match last weekend, which enabled opponents Aston Villa to score an equalising goal.
In January, the 63-yearold Argentine had found himself in hot water after sending scouts, secretly, to watch opponents train ahead of games, in Leeds’ bid to win promotion to the Premier League, in an incident dubbed “Spygate” by the British media. Fast-forward to last Sunday, and, in something of a Damascene conversion, Bielsa ordered his Leeds players to let opponents Aston Villa score an equaliser. The bizarre scenes followed a passage of play, which led the

Argentine to believe his side had taken the lead unfairly, during the Championship match. After Aston Villa player Jonathan Kodjia injured himself in a tackle, most of the stadium expected the hosts to knock the ball out of play, enabling the striker to receive treatment. But Leeds had other ideas, and Mateusz Klich played on against static defenders to give his side a controversial lead. But a mass brawl erupted as soon as Klich hit the back of the net with a free shot, with Villa players furious that their pleas had been ignored by the opponents. Aston Villa’s managerial team, which includes former Chelsea and England skipper John Terry, led the furious protests from the side of the pitch, confronting Bielsa. Villa’s Anwar el Ghazi was also sent off, amid the melee, for an apparent swipe at
Leeds striker Patrick Bamford, yet television footage revealed that no contact was made. Bielsa then told his players to let Aston Villa

walk the ball into the back of the net from the restart, to complete a 1-1 draw. “English football is known for sports-
manship, so I don’t have to comment on this kind of thing, which is common in England,” Bielsa told Sky Sports after the game.
Porto keeper’s on mend after shock heart attack REAL Madrid’s legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who now plays for Porto, suffered a heart attack on Wednesday morning, while training.
The 37-year old Spaniard was taken to Hospital CUF Porto for treatment, and was said to be in a stable condition. “Iker suffered an acute, myocardial infarction during a session at the PortoGaia Training Centre, in Olival,” said a Porto spokesperson. The Madrid born international, who made his Real Madrid debut as a teenager 20 years ago, went on to play 700 games for Los Blancos, winning five La Liga titles. “Casillas is well and stable, and his heart problem is solved,” added the spokesperson.
