Where are YOU resident for Tax Purposes?

Non-Resident Income Tax (NRIT)

We are often asked by our Spanish ex-pat clients what tax they should be paying in Spain. Below is a quick guide to whether you are tax resident in Spain, and then, if you are, what tax you should be paying.

Expatriate employees, who take up positions of employment in Spain, becoming Spanish tax resident in the process, may elect to be taxed on their Spanish sourced income according to the NRIT regime. You may only avail of the NRIT regime for a maximum of six tax years and must also comply with various conditions including the following:

Tax residency arises in Spain where one or more of the following applies: • An individual spends more than 183 days per year residing in Spain. • Spain is an individual’s main place of living (i.e. family home is in Spain and children attend school in Spain). • Spain is an individual’s base for their economic activities.

• Your move to Spain occurs as a consequence of an employment contract. • You have not been a resident in Spain in the 10 years prior to taking up the position of employment. • The work is actually performed in Spain. • The employment contract is carried out for a Spanish entity or a permanent establishment of a multi-national organisation.

Individual Income Tax (IIT) If you are resident in Spain for tax purposes, there are two distinct categories of tax residency in Spain which may apply to you, namely Non-resident income tax, and Individual income tax.

The IIT regime will apply to all other individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the NRIT regime. The Spanish tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December.

Brave volunteers ward off danger as they battle blaze

Continued from Front Yet many fire-fighters, working through the night, had the blaze under control and extinguished at around 3am yesterday (Thursday), thanks also to the hard work and bravery of the 114 volunteers and specialised workers, who backed them up. With the help of the wind and little humidity, the fire was able to spread to difficult areas of the National Park, scorching around 34 acres of bushes and shrubs. But when the sun went down, the temperature dropped, as

did the wind, which helped fire-fighters get the blaze under control. That was a huge relief to officials, who were concerned that the flames would spread into the San Juan de las Ramblas municipality, affecting its Pine Forest. The fire was first spotted at 3.52pm, and, at that time, it had affected no more than 1,000 square metres. Eight workers from the Forest Brigade (Brifor) were closest to the area where the fire began, though it still took them two hours to reach the site. Because of the strong winds

circulating the Park, flames began to spread quickly towards the La Fortaleza area. Specialists anticipated that the fire would run its course. But with the direction of the wind changing, so did that of the fire, which then headed towards the Pine Forest. Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso was concerned on Wednesday night, explaining how the emergency services were facing a difficult task, because of the fire’s location, and the Park’s precarious terrain. At 9.45pm, a Cabildo

specialist predicted a long night ahead for the team of workers, all pulling together to extinguish the fire. They were tackling the flames using manual tools, which complicated their work. Among the team were 34 members of the Forest Brigade (Brifor), along with 72 military officers from the emergency unit, as well as members from the Red Cross, who were there as a precautionary measure, in case of accidents or injuries. Flames could be seen from Spain’s weather forecaster Aemet’s Izaña Atmospheric

Research Centre, based in the North of the National Park, at around 10.30pm on Wednesday night. They were travelling from South to North in a line, for almost one kilometre. Meanwhile, helicopters were out yesterday morning (Thursday), dropping huge volumes of water over the affected areas, to dampen the effects of the blaze. Thankfully, it was the first time in years that Tenerife had experienced a major blaze, but the response from everyone involved was magnificent, and courageous!

Romanian’s airport arrest

A MAN was arrested by Tacoronte’s Local Police last Saturday, after causing a commotion throughout the town.

He had been driving around the municipality recklessly, around the top end, specifically, alarming the locals and putting their lives at risk. An investigation, as well as surveillance carried out by the officers, led to the driver being caught, because, while being watched, he was seen changing the number plates of his vehicle to

The 25-year-old had just disembarked a flight from Birmingham, when the Local Police, armed with a warrant, issued by a Valencia judge, pounced. He was taken to the central police station in Puerto Del Rosario, and, once the police report is issued, the man will appear before a judge.

THE actions of a quick-thinking girl, aged 11, almost certainly saved her mum’s life at their Las Palmas home, in Gran Canaria.

The youngster was at home when her mother began taking her daily medication, only to start choking on a pill. Immediately, the daughter phoned her grandfather, who, in turn, rang the emergency services to explain what had happened to his own daughter. The operator realised that the woman’s life was moments away from being lost, and that time was of the essence. She asked for the address to dispatch an ambulance, in addition to the telephone number, so that a medic could communicate with the minor. The operator was well aware that the youngster was the only person who could possibly help keep her mum alive, until the medical team arrived. The emergency doctor called the young girl, who confirmed the facts, and that her mum was having problems breathing. That led to reassurance from the doctor, telling her that help was on the way. She was also told to follow the medics’ instructions until the ambulance arrived. She was asked to open the windows to ventilate the area, and, wisely, to put the phone on hands-free to listen

Fortunately, with the assistance of the telephone medic, he managed to clear his daughter’s airway. The medic stayed on the phone until the ambulance arrived, and they were able to check the “patient”. But although her airways were cleared, she was still taken to the university hospital for observation. The doctor involved was full of praise for the youngster, saying: “If it weren’t for this brave little girl, it is debatable whether her mother would have survived. “Her daughter did everything she was asked to do, and we are all extremely proud of her. Her mother will surely be singing her praises as well.”

Midnight driver fled police control point

ARONA’S Local Police chased a 25-year-old driver, who failed to stop at their control point in Costa del Silencio, just after midnight.

It happened in the early hours of last Monday and officers, who had set up the control area, spotted a vehicle being driven without switched-on headlights. They attempted to stop the driver, but he ignored their instructions and sped away, sparking a police chase. Another officer radioed

through for further assistance, and, before long, another patrol car was closing in on the runaway vehicle. Before the chase came to an end, the protagonist crashed into several container bins on Avenida Jose Antonio Tavio. And, because of his erratic driving, he also hit a Ford Focus patrol car, giving chase at a close distance. That driver suffered several minor injuries, while the runaway motorist decided to escape on foot, to no avail because police soon caught him. While they were restraining

him while making the arrest, the errant driver was physically violent, injuring a further three officers slightly. He was well-known to officers, because he had several charges against his name. The man aged 25, from the Costa del Silencio area, is known as El Paleta. He was arrested and charged with disobeying and resisting the law, as well as dangerous driving, and not having a licence, as well as his violent behaviour towards the arresting officers. He is now in police custody, awaiting a court date.

Motorway crashes cause chaos on a Sunday night

FIVE people were injured during two traffic incidents on the TF-1 motorway last Sunday evening, in which four vehicles, all heading in the north direction, were involved. Chaos occurred because one incident followed another, immediately, in the Adeje municipality on Sunday evening, with two vehicles turning over completely, causing a long hold-up for traffic.

The emergency services received several calls at around 8.46pm, requesting the fire brigade, as well as medical assistance. The first accident happened coming off the Torviscas exit, alongside the TF-1, while the second one followed, moments later, on the motorway itself. The Guardia Civil, fire-fighters and two ambulances were dispatched to the scene, and all five people, from the two cars, suffered injuries and were taken to Hospiten Sur and El Mojon hospital for further treatment.

The dog, called Miracle, at the Tenerife court

Dog’s court testimony against abusive owner A DOG named Miracle was called as a witness during an animal-abuse trial against her former owner, in a Tenerife court.

In a legal first for Spain, the pit bull was called to give testimony against the man, who thought nothing of locking her in a suitcase and dumping her in a waste bin. The prosecutor for the province’s Environment Department, explained that the dog “obviously would not be able to speak”.

However, she would show the magistrate the wounds she had sustained instead. A spokesperson for the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) said the dog, called Miracle, would also raise awareness of animal abuse. The defendant, who appeared via video-camera from prison in Seville, following a robbery charge against him, said he threw the dog out because “he thought it was dead”. Prosecutors are asking for a prison sentence of between nine and 12 months.

NEWS IN BRIEF Helicopter staff vote to strike

EMPLOYEES of the Badcock company, which operates the Emergency Services helicopters, have announced 27 one-day strikes, this month and in June, from today (Friday). The series of weekly stoppages is backed by the SEPLA airline pilots’ union and technicians’ union ASETMA, as well as the UGT trade union. All are protesting against Badcock’s proposed salary cuts of between 13% and 30%, yet the unions’ representatives have guaranteed a “100% minimum service” for the operations carried out by the company’s 330 pilots for the Public Administration. “There will be no real impact on the service,” said union officials, who said the decision to cut salaries was included in a collective arbitration agreement.

Alert officers are life-savers

TWO Local Police officers from the Tacoronte municipality, who attended an emergency, were able to save the man’s life. Officers heard family members shouting for help because their companion had suffered a suspected heart attack. The two men arrived swiftly, with a portable defibrillator, and administered CPR until an ambulance arrived. The medical team praised the officers’ quick response, saying it was fundamental in saving the man’s life.

Tenerife grows oldest spuds

THE last direct descendants in Europe of the potatoes brought directly from South America by the “conquistadors”, are grown in the Canaries, according to online, fresh-produce news link FreshPlaza. These potatoes, which stand out for their sweet flavour, have evocative names, like “black lily”, and are mostly grown here in Tenerife, where they are considered a delicacy. The oldest planting of this variety in the Canaries goes back to 1622, when they were brought from Peru to Europe by Juan Bautista de Castro.

Brit soldier and football coach was a drug-dealer

A BRITISH soldier and football coach has pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and intent to supply in Gibraltar.

Garry Lowe, 34, a former Corporal in the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, was handcuffed with 56 grams of the class-A drug, with a street value of £3,000. He is known for managing several football teams in Gibraltar, and helped found Premier Division side Gibraltar Phoenix. He later took up coaching responsibilities at Red Imps and Bruno’s Magpies. After his initial arrest in February, outside a “military establishment”, police also used specialised sniffer dogs to search two locations. Lowe was discharged

from the regiment at his own request, before his court appearance last Thursday.

He has been remanded in custody and the case will be moved to the Supreme Court on 30th May.

Sex-pest boss was a target for police A MAN aged 48 was arrested by National Police officers, after being accused of sexual harassment in the workplace. He was held in La Laguna, after being alleged to have propositioned sexual favours, in exchange for full-time work.

An investigation began when a former employee told the National Police about events occurring at her previous place of work. During the investigation, officers came across several indications, especially while speaking with employees, that the individual quite often made sexual advances, as well as touching women while in the workplace.

He tried to manipulate and take advantage of the women, and their economic situation, knowing they needed the work. The police, while investigating the issue, questioned several women, who admitted they had gained employment by maintaining a sexual relationship with the head of the company.

Once gone, the son handed three big bags, along with a plastic box, to the police, telling them they were also his dad’s property. When officers checked the bags’ contents, they were surprised to find drug

paraphernalia, including marijuana, while the plastic box contained tools, used, specifically, for nursing plants. A total of three kilos of marijuana was weighed in, which persuaded the police to arrest and charge the father with possession of drugs. The National Police then issued another report about the individual, who is now awaiting a court date.

Wild Brit attacks officers, and smashes car window

THREE policemen and a Guardia Civil officer were injured by a British tourist, during his arrest in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote.

The 33-year-old man attacked the lawmen, following an altercation in a bar. And he also broke a window of the police vehicle, in which he was to be transferred. Once in police custody, he also wrecked the door of a prison cell, before being

San Miguel planning €5.5m improvements

COSTA San Miguel is set to receive a 5.5-million investment, as part of the Improvement and Modernisation Plan (PMM), put in place by the Town Council. Its plan is to enhance local facilities and promote tourism, as well as boosting the area’s economy. Seven initiatives have been forwarded to the Canary Islands Government for approval and funding, including two large urban parks; the seafront development; the construction of a bicycle

lane in the urban area; the conditioning of at least one beach and the road reorganisation, as well as the incorporation of car parks and the revitalisation of commercial activities. With the start-up of the PMM, the strengthening and consolidation of Costa San Miguel as a tourist destination is essential, in addition to encouragement for private investment, along with the employment generation. The scheme also incorporates the renovation of tourist establishments, which will contribute to the revitalisation of private spaces. It also encourages a moderate growth of new accom-

modation to strengthen the area’s tourist activity, in addition to reversing the trend towards too much residential development. San Miguel Town Hall, which has promoted the PMM modifications, is awaiting approval of the environmental phase of the plan from the Municipal Corporation. Details of all the proposed urban projects will soon be sent to the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security, to continue its processing through public information, before the Regional Executive Council’s final approval of the €5.5m scheme.

And Tenerife North came ninth. The company relied on 40,000 passenger surveys in over 40 countries conducted in 2018, as well as data from commercial vendors, to rank the airports and the airlines. The report ranked airports on three parameters: time performance, which weighed 60% of the final score, while the other two factors, service quality, and food & shopping options, accounted for 20% of each final score. Hamad International Airport of Qatar clinched the first position in the list of the best airports of 2019. Guardia will call time on thieving Tenerife woman A TENERIFE woman, aged 26, is being investigated by Guardia Civil officers, after robbing a female tourist on Santiago del Teide’s busy high street.

The woman, originally from a small town, south of Madrid, was already being checked out for various other robberies. Once the woman had the tourist’s attention and supplied the supposed information needed, she then hugged the unsuspecting tourist in thanks, and, in the process, relieved her of a €4,000 designer watch.

The shocked tourist soon realised what had happened and reported the robbery to the Guardia Civil, giving officers an in-depth description of the thief, painting a good picture of her. The thief was also identified from a picture in the Guardia’s criminal photograph archives.

I’ll kill you all, threatens Dead turtles found Ryanair plane passenger in Canarian waters

PASSENGERS on a Ryanair flight rescued a flight attendant, as a man, who, allegedly, threatened to “kill every single passenger”, grabbed a fire extinguisher, apparently to hit her with.

Mobile-phone footage shows travellers on the ManchesterGran Canaria flight struggling

to restrain the man, who had flown into a fury. He is believed to have attempted to open the exterior door several times, and he also ripped the top of a female passenger during the incident, as well as taking her mobile phone. Passengers then had to keep him pinned to the floor for about 45 minutes, while, in the video, he can be heard shouting: “I will kill every single one of you.” He adds: “I will literally burn

your house down. I’ve grown up in Little Level, Bolton, and I will defend myself. “I will literally fight every one of you and kill you, and don’t think I’m joking. I will kill every one of you!” The man was arrested on arrival in Gran Canaria, after Ryanair called for police assistance. The trouble-maker, who has been banned, permanently, from all Ryanair flights, will be dealt with by Spanish police.

Nursery kids might have to down toys! THE Spanish CCOO labour union has called for a countrywide strike at nursery schools on Tuesday (21st May) because, it insists, teachers are not being paid an adequate salary for their levels of responsibility and training. A union spokeswoman said: “We demand working conditions that suit the commendable work thousands of children in pre-school education have

been receiving, in return for teachers’ salaries that do not reach €900 gross a month.” She added: “Going forward, the proposed deal

would flagrantly violate the State Collective Bargaining Agreement, which states that no agreement will be below €1,000 in 2020.”

STAFF on board the Canarian Maritime Search and Rescue vessel recovered a huge, dead, marine turtle, floating in Canarian waters.

The shelled animal was spotted on Tuesday afternoon off the coast of Gran Canaria, near the Tauro beach, in the Mogan municipality. The tragic animal, approximately one-and-a-half metres long, weighing close to 400 kilos, was taken to the Arguineguín port, where professionals from the environmental department

took charge. Following procedure, they took the cadaver to be analysed, to establish how the animal died. Sadly, another turtle washed up on Canarian shores at around 10am last Saturday, on Arico’s coastline of Poris. There are no visible signs, depicting how this poor creature died, but one of the same species, found dead in March, was strangled by a plastic bag. What concerns the locals is that these distressing, marine-wildlife sightings are becoming more frequent, and it’s heart-breaking for many.

Armed airport man is shot in leg by officers A POLISH man, armed with a knife and a criminal record, was shot in a leg at Almeria airport, after he had lunged at Guardia Civil officers. THE Canarian emergency services began their work yesterday (Thursday) with a host of Tenerife calls in just one hour, involving traffic accidents. The rush occurred between 8-9am, and ambulances were dispatched to several people, who had been injured. The first person needing medical assistance was a 68-year-old man, who was knocked over while crossing an Arona road in Calle El Coronal. The second accident happened almost simultaneously, the call being received at 8.03am, after two small vans and two small cars were involved in a pile-up on the TF1 near

Arafo, heading southbound. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, although one person injured a leg upon impact. One TF-1 lane was closed for a short while, which then led to traffic jams. At 8.10am, a woman was injured after being knocked over on La Laguna’s Calle Menceyes. The woman, thought to be in her twenties, was also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries she sustained. Then, in Santa Ursula, between Santa Cruz and Orotava, a 32-year-old woman was also knocked over and injured, on the Carretera España, close to the council building. Spanish press reported that the man had slipped into a restricted area, close to the runways, early on Tuesday morning. Then, when officers

approached him, he ran off, and a chase began. Eventually, he was involved in a struggle with the officers, which was when the Pole took out a knife and lurched towards them. But he managed to run off again. One officer was believed to have fired a warning shot in the air, which failed to stop him. An officer then fired “at a non-vital area” to immobilise the aggressor.

Nevertheless, he got as far as the La Cañada de San Urbano area, before being detained. He was taken to Almeria city’s Torrecardenas hospital to be operated on, and is, reportedly, out of danger. The Guardia has now launched an investigation into how the armed man was able to get into a restricted zone, and why he was there.

Freddie Starr died from heart disease MALAGA’S Province’s senior coroner said British comedian Freddie Starr, who died at his Costa del Sol home last Thursday, had coronary heart disease. He rose to fame in the 1960s, first as a musician and then as an entertainer. He later fronted TV shows, before moving to Mijas in 2015. Freddie’s estranged family will have his body brought back to the UK from Spain, according to reports. Donna Smith, Freddie’s third wife, said the family were “doing their bit” to return his

body to England, after it was revealed that the celebrity faced a “pauper’s funeral” in Spain. His carer, Nelly Georgieva, pleaded for help after revealing that the comedian had died penniless, leaving her to settle his medical bills. But she couldn’t afford to

pay for a Spanish funeral. Her announcement prompted Spanish funeral directors to offer to take over the arrangements. Freddie could now be laid to rest next to his mother, Hilda, in Liverpool. A source said: “Freddie adored his mum. She was the driving force behind his career, encouraging him to gigs in pubs and clubs to start with. “Though estranged from his children and former wives, they felt it was only right that he was reunited with his mum.”

Suicidal man is rescued by officers’ joint effort

A MIDDLE-AGED man, attempting to take his own life in Fañabe yesterday morning (Thursday), was saved by the police.

Officers were alerted by the Canarian emergency services, who had been told about an individual, hanging from a bridge there. They were also warned that the man appeared to have every intention of falling on to the busy TF-1 road beneath. Officers were aware of the situation, not only for the man’s benefit, but for those drivers using the busy motorway.

They were dispatched to the area rapidly, and, upon arrival, saw him hanging from the 10-metre-high bridge, ready to jump. The police raced over to him, and managed to catch him just in time. They grabbed the man’s arms, pulling him up and holding on to his body to prevent him falling. Three Local Police officers collaborated with two counterparts from the National Police, and, together, they managed to remove the man from the bridge. Once his integrity was assured, the officers requested that he receive medical assistance, and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Violent thug robbed four Wrong-way victims…in just one day! motorist held

A YOUNG robber, with eight thefts on his criminal record already, has been again arrested, by National Police officers.

Amazingly, the 27-yearold man was held and charged by the police, after committing a further four robberies, on the same day! He used violence to steal from his targets, injuring some of them. But one of his victims, a taxi-driver, notified the police, and, thanks to his collaboration, the thief was soon found and charged. The cabbie told officers that a customer had attempted to strangle him, while trying to steal his belongings. He gave the officers an indepth description of the man, as well as a possible location, because he had trailed him, briefly, in his taxi, after the assault. It wasn’t long before the thief was arrested, and, while police were conducting a body search, they came across credit cards which didn’t belong to him. In fact, the cards had been stolen from another of his victims, who was robbed,

violently, in broad daylight outside her home that same morning. She had not long reported the crime to the police, who also received further information of two more robberies committed that day, coincidently, featuring the same characteristics as the previous two thefts. Another taxi driver had also been attacked by the same thug, and this time a blade was used to threaten him, until he handed over his takings. His assailant left with just with 50 euros, while the cabbie suffered superficial wounds to his hands, as a result of the ensuing struggle between them. The second victim was attacked, violently, while she was at work. The compulsive thief entered the shop, demanding the daily takings. He left the poor woman with a fractured nose, and she was treated at the nearby medical centre. This time, the thief escaped with 200 euros. All four victims confirmed that it was the same attacker, and, thankfully, he will remain in police custody until he appears before a judge.

THE Guardia Civil arrested a motorist, terrifying oncoming drivers on Saturday night by driving on the wrong side of the TF-1 motorway.

Some notified the Canarian emergency services, who, in turn, contacted the Guardia. The operator was told that the car had been driven for some kilometres against the traffic flow, and that it had already collided with another vehicle. Guardia officers soon caught up with the driver, and, fortunately, intercepted the car at El Eros, in Arico, before any further incidents. The wrong-way motorist was detained, but the extent of the injuries sustained by those involved in the collision was not known.

Murdered wife is found naked in bed with rose

A MAN was arrested on suspicion of murdering his 42-year-old wife, after fleeing to Alicante airport.

The woman was found in her bed, naked, and with a rose on her chest, and the tragic event happened before the husband bought a plane ticket to Ecuador, which was their native country. Guardia Civil officers, who attended the Torre-Pacheco house in Murcia, believed the woman had been suffocated. An autopsy was scheduled to take place this week.

The woman’s friends notified police, after she failed to arrive at work, but there were no indications, prior to her death, that she was at risk from sexist violence. She had, however, denounced her husband in 2009 for an assault, and, subsequently, he received a restraining order, which expired in October 2010. The suspected killer is now in custody, while residents in Murcia have now held a minute’s silence for his wife. If confirmed as a case of macho violence, it would be the first in Murcia this year, and the 20th across Spain.

Sex-assault trio may face 80yrs in jail

PROSECUTORS in the Basque Country are asking for a total of 80 years’ imprisonment for three men, accused of sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl. The suspects are said to have abused the girl in the town of Solokoetxe, before filming the incident on a mobile phone and sending it to a contact, through WhatsApp. The men, two of whom are 20, and the other aged 28, were believed to have carried out the crime after meeting the young woman at a nightclub in January 2017. Two of the accused are said to have taken the girl to a vending machine at around 7am, before cornering and assaulting her. The third man, allegedly, arrived later and was about to join in. But they fled when two cleaners arrived. In addition to the alleged WhatsApp footage, prosecutors claim there is also CCTV video of the incident

Fraudster’s wife scoffs at his shameful crimes

A FACEBOOK post has caused outrage, because British fraudster’s wife Lynne Graver is seen enjoying a holiday in Alicante.

The post, published by her friend, says: “Loving my bestie staying with me @ LynneGraver laughing so much! Who says crime doesn’t pay #lifeisgreat”. Mrs Graver’s husband, Barry

Spearing, is known for having scammed millions out of elderly victims by convincing them to invest money in fake businesses and projects. Lynne Graver was not prosecuted for any crimes related to the con, and there is no suggestion that the holiday was financed by the profits from her husband’s criminal activity. She was pictured, in the recently deleted post, sitting on a balcony in holiday attire.

Fourth Brexit vote may be conclusive

Evil man batters dog, then tosses it in a bin A HIDEOUS man was arrested after a security camera filmed him beating a dog to death, then tossing the poor animal’s lifeless body into a waste bin.

He was seen on camera, carrying the small dog in his arms to the bins. He then placed it on the ground and beat it several times on the

head with a blunt object. Next, he picked up the corpse and threw it in a communal bin before walking off, seemingly unconcerned. The events happened in broad daylight in the La Rioja region, south of the Basque country, and the Guardia Civil arrested a 40-yearold Spaniard, accused of animal mistreatment, faces a prison sentence of 6-18 months. The incident happened in the Autol municipality in March,

but the brutal man could not be arrested immediately because he had been admitted to a health clinic. He was finally arrested at the end of April and handed over to the judicial authorities. Each year in Spain, tens of thousands of dogs are thought to be killed, mainly by hunters who have decided they no longer need them. And there have been many cases of galgos (greyhounds) being hung, or tossed down disused wells.

BRITAIN’S Prime Minister, Theresa May, will hold a new Brexit vote early next month, giving MPs another chance to decide the issue. This will be the fourth House of Commons vote on her Brexit deal, the previous three having been rejected. A Downing Street spokesman said the new vote was announced during a meeting between contentious Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and the Prime Minister. The vote will take place during the first week of June, before

MPs’ summer recess. The spokesman added: “The Prime Minister met the Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons to make clear our determination to bring talks to a conclusion, and deliver on the referendum result to leave the EU.” “We will, therefore, be bringing forward the Withdrawal Agreement Bill in the week beginning 3rd June.” He added: “It is imperative we do so then, if the UK is to leave the EU before the summer Parliamentary recess, though official talks are still ongoing.”

Airport staff woman dies after German attacks her

Cheated expats have backing of Brit MPs Charlie Elphicke MP seeks Parliamentary debate on the Premier FX collapse

A GERMAN tourist, who assaulted a female security assistant at Mallorca’s Son Sant Joan airport, could be charged with reckless homicide after his victim died from heart failure some days later. The 43-year-old man was arrested by the Guardia Civil after he pushed the victim to the ground, when she prevented him going into a restricted area. Herminia Bedinelli, 66, of Argentine origin, had hip and leg fractures, for which she needed surgery. But she suffered heart problems and

died in hospital. She had been preparing to retire soon. The aggressor was initially charged with a crime of causing injury, and released on bail by Palma court. Now, though, a judge is examining a post-mortem report before deciding whether to upgrade the charge. There has been an outpouring of support and grief on social networks offering condolences to the family of Herminia, who was described as extremely popular amongst fellow workers. Trablisa, the security firm which employed the tragic woman, says it will bring a private prosecution against the German man.

DOZENS of British MPs have called for a debate on the dodgy collapse of a Mallorca-based foreign exchange firm, after a probe by online newspaper Olive Press revealed scores of expat victims. Premier FX, based in Palma, ceased trading last July, leaving behind millions in unpaid debts, and hundreds of people, mostly Brits living in Spain, without their savings. British victim Pauline Creasy revealed how a “coalition’ of 25 ministers, led by Dover MP Charlie Elphicke, were

spearheading the issue in Parliament. The single mother, from Elms Vale, confirmed that concern had been growing at Westminster over how the investigation into FX trading had been handled. Elphicke has set out to secure a debate to register the dissatisfaction and concern the Premier FX victims have raised about the investigation. The formerlawyer-turned-MP said: “It is not acceptable for police not to investigate, when British citizens are defrauded of tens of millions of pounds. “I will continue to work with Pauline to push for this to be scrutinised properly and treated as criminality, because

that’s exactly what it is.” The political intervention came as British expat Dale Brazil, who lost £30,000, told Olive Press she was concerned that the UK Financial Conduct Authority had shut down the investigation after a disgraceful, nine-month delay. “Members of parliament are pursuing this relentlessly, but they seem to be getting shut down mainly by the FCA, with Surrey police saying they do not have the resources to investigate,” the Santa-Catalina-based Brit said this week. “It beggars belief that, nine months after reporting the fraud, Surrey Police are telling us now that they refuse to investigate.”

Suspect murderer hunted Police rescue by his one-time adversary after collision

of ‘drug’ boats

A LINKEDIN page, under the name of “Kevin Parle”, is taunting a former Metropolitan Police officer as he begins his search for the alleged murderer.

Parle, one of the UK’s mostwanted men, is believed to have fled to Spain more than a decade ago, after masked gunmen shot dead a mumof-three, Lucy Hargreaves, while she was sleeping, in August 2005. Cryptically, the account, set up in Murcia, privately messaged former-undercover officer Peter Bleksley, saying: “Keep up the good work Peter xx”. Bleksley, who worked for the Met Police’s crack undercover outfit SO10 in the 1980s, now wants help to bring alleged murderer Parle to justice. The Liverpudlian, a giant 6ft 6in, is also wanted in connection with the shooting of 16-year-old Liam Kelly, who was gunned down in Liverpool, in June 2004. “He’s been on the run for nearly 15 years, and he could have reinvented himself

completely,” said Bleksley, who now writes books on unsolved crimes. Parle, having been linked with Torrevieja, the wider Alicante area, and even Perth, in Australia, is now believed to be back on the Costa Blanca, or close by in Murcia, said Bleksley. “He could be living with an unsuspecting partner, who knows nothing of his background. He could have a wife and kids, and be delivering washing machines. We simply don’t know. “But I believe he shot a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old mother, which is absolutely scandalous.” Bleksley, who presented the Channel 4 show “Hunted”, particularly wants to speak

with a British resident who referred to Parle as a “gentle giant” during a 2009 investigation. “I will speak to him under the radar, and it’s my solemn undertaking never to disclose his identity,” said Bleksley, currently writing a book on Parle to help raise awareness. The investigator is heading to Madrid on 1st June, because he believes Parle will not pass up the chance to watch Liverpool in the Champions League final, after their sensational success against Barcelona in the semi-finals. “Parle was a huge Liverpool fan, and there’s only one place for a Liverpool fan who can afford it on 1st June and that’s Madrid,” said Bleksley.

SIX people were rescued by National Police after two boats, the type used for drug-running, collided off the Campo de Gibraltar coast. The individuals became shipwrecked after the semirigid water vessels crashed into each other, just off La Linea de la Concepcion, on Wednesday. A National Police helicopter was already circling above,

at around 2pm, when it picked up the collision on its video camera. Two officers, who commandeered a local man’s boat, sailed into the choppy waters and performed a dramatic rescue. One castaway, unconscious when the men were pulled from the water, had to be resuscitated. Another was transferred to the SAS Hospital, suffering hypothermia. An investigation remains open into the boats’ activities.

New breeding rules anger zoo workers Twins Mary and Martha Osaro

One twin’s missing after their birthday night out FROM now on, only animals at risk of extinction, and can safely be returned to the wild, will be bred at Barcelona Zoo. The City Council approved a motion modifying the zoo’s new animal-protection bylaws, with the backing of the BComu, PdeCat and ERC parties, despite opposition from Ciudadanos, the PSC socialists and the Partido Popular. The 2,000 animals, belonging

to 300 species now living in the 127-year-old zoo, will be transferred to animal sanctuaries, or remain there until they die natural deaths. But those who would not survive, including threatened species, are excluded. “We cannot have animals destined to live miserably in cages,” said Alejandra Garcia, from the Libera movement. Animal-protection and animal-rights’ groups applauded the City Council’s move, although the zoo’s 150

employees have called for a strike, condemning the new measures that mean the disappearance of a park, which, they say: “Belongs in the collective memory of generations.” Javier Almunia, President of AIZA, Spain’s Zoos and Aquariums Association, lamented the new bylaws. “If we do not reproduce species long-term, we shall never know if we could, eventually, have reintroduced animals that today would not survive,” he argued.

A TWIN girl, who vanished during birthday celebrations in Madrid, has been found, “very traumatised” in hospital, but the whereabouts of her lookalike sister remain unknown. Mary and Martha Osaro, from Ireland, had been on a night out in the La Latina area of the Spanish capital, to celebrate turning 26. The pair’s big sister, Jennifer, who has been leading the search for them in Madrid, shared the news that Mary had been found.

But Martha remained missing. “From the feedback I got from where I found her, she was very traumatised,” said Jennifer. “I’m still going to continue to look for Martha because I have found one twin and I will find the other one, if it’s the last thing I do.” Jennifer, who believes someone is holding back information about Martha’s whereabouts, has appealed for help. She said: “The police, Interpol and Irish embassy in Ireland and Spain have all the girls’ info. If you have any contacts in Madrid, share with them as well.”

Money-launderers offered cryptocurrencies services

GUARDIA Civil officers in Spain have broken up a European gang, who were providing a huge moneylaundering service, involving millions of euros, to criminal organisations via cryptocurrencies. Eight people were arrested and another eight charged for involvement in the crypto money-laundering ring. And seven houses, as well as a money-exchange office and an indoor cannabis cultivation plant, were searched. Eleven vehicles, €16,800, nearly 200 cannabis plants, two crypto ATMs, computers, devices, jewels and relevant documents were all seized. The criminals carried out several money-laundering schemes involving the transfer from fiat (traditional) currency to virtual assets, to hide the illegal origin of the proceeds.

Some of the identified methods used crypto ATMs and smurfing, a criminal way of splitting illicit proceeds into smaller sums and placing them into the financial system, to avoid suspicious-transaction reporting. Spanish authorities froze four “cold wallets” and 20 “hot wallets”, to which €9m had been transferred, as well as several bank accounts. The operation was a follow-up to Operation Guatuzo, during which 23 people were arrested last summer in Spain and Colombia. On the action day, Europol experts were deployed to Spain to back the Guardia Civil. They provided information and expertise, crosschecking data gathered in the course of the move against Europol’s databases.

THE Common Reporting Standard, where countries around the world automatically exchange information about taxpayers’ offshore income and assets, is now in full flow. Tax authorities are beginning to use the data received, to their benefit. The UK government published the 2019 version of its “No Safe Havens” policy paper on 13th March, timed to coincide with the Chancellor’s Spring Statement. It outlines how the UK has seen “huge changes and improvements to offshore tax compliance in recent years”, and lists

some of the results of the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). HM Revenue & Customs received 5.67 million records on UK taxpayers’ offshore financial accounts in 2018. This involved around 3 million UK resident individuals, or the entities they control. The tax office confirmed that it has begun this CRS data to detect possible noncompliance. It also receives information from a “range of sources”, and together this “unprecedented” amount of data is “at the heart” of its approach. Since 2010, the government has introduced over 100 new measures to tackle noncompliance. This enabled HMRC to recover £2.9 billion in lost tax revenues, and secure and protect over £200 billion. And this was before the CRS began providing more information. Since 2016, it has increased its investigations into high net worth individuals, six times over.

‘Disgusting’ bullfighter dries animal’s tears… then kills it!

SOCIAL Media went wild after well-known bullfighter Morante de la Puebla dried a bull’s tears, just before killing it last Friday. It happened at Seville’s Maestranza bullring, during the Feria de Abril (April Fair), when the man pulled out a handkerchief, approached the animal and wiped its tears. The bullfighter’s gesture was applauded at the square, but many users took to social media to criticise his attitude. He was described as a “psychopath”, a “sick sadist” or “disgusting”.

Furious Silvia Baquero, President of Animalist Party Against Mistreatment of Animals (PACMA), said: “Only a twisted and perverse mind would be able to torture an animal until blood drips down its legs, and wipe its face with a handkerchief. “I believe that more and more Spaniards are rejecting bullfighting, and they don’t feel able to identify with a country which sees it as a national celebration.” She added: “There’s a new generation of people who are worried about animals and the environment, and who have an understanding of social justice.”

HMRC uses its “Connect” analysis programme to crosscheck the data it receives from abroad with UK data (salaries, bank accounts, loans, property, car ownership etc.). This provides tax officials with information to challenge around 500,000 cases, each year. The Common Reporting Standard came into effect in 2016, when the “early adopters” began collecting information on the financial accounts held by nonresidents. Today, 100 countries share information. The first exchange took place in 2017 (relating to fiscal year 2016) by 49 jurisdictions, including the UK and Spain. Another 51 joined in September 2018. In the foreword to the “No Safe Havens” paper, Mel Stride MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury warned: “HMRC will continue to crack down hard on those who try to avoid or evade paying the tax they owe, as well as those

who help them, by investing in the latest technology and using its tough new penalties.” Last year’s “Requirement to Correct” rules put the onus on taxpayers to regulate their offshore affairs. 18,000 individuals reportedly corrected offshore noncompliance before the 1st October 2018 deadline. Since then, offshore tax evaders face penalties exceeding 100% of the tax. Those who missed the deadline still have the opportunity to regularise their offshore tax affairs. HMRC is clear that those who wait until tax investigators identity that they have paid less than they should, will be in a worse position than those who voluntarily approach and co-operate with the tax office. The Common Reporting Standard is helping tax authorities around the world, including here in Spain, to detect past tax evasion and

collect due tax, and prevent offshore tax non-compliance going forward. If you are tax resident here and have assets in the UK (or elsewhere), carefully follow the local tax rules, the UK tax rules and also the UKSpain double tax treaty, to make sure you are correctly declaring income and paying tax where you should be. There are compliant taxplanning arrangements available in Spain that can help you legitimately reduce your tax liabilities, particularly on your investment capital. So take specialist crossborder, wealth-management advice so that you do not pay any more tax than you need to, while having peace of mind that you are not breaking any rules. Failure to do so carries a penalty ranging from €600 to 50% of the seized cash! In most cases, though, a minor fine is applied. However, the lawful origin of the cash must still be

Trio launch €1m riddle POLICE in Spain have been forced to release three Lithuanians, after catching them trying to “smuggle” just under €1m in cash.

The trio were caught with the money, after the group’s driver crashed their camper van on the A-92 in Granada, heading towards Malaga. Some of the bills were spread across the road when officers arrived at the scene, while the driver, who tested positive for drugs and alcohol, was found outside the vehicle. The trio, one of whom lives in Malaga, were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. And investigators believe they were travelling in a basic van to “go unnoticed”. In their police statements, the Lithuanian nationals, two men and a woman, aged 41, 45 and 35 respectively, all denied the money was theirs, insisting they had no knowledge of who owned it. None of the three has been arrested, and face an administrative infraction only, for not having requested permission to travel with that huge sum of cash. Anyone moving more than €100,000 cash within the country must declare it to the Ministry of Economy and Finance. And whoever owns the €1m

Flying even more passengers in and out of the UK’s most popular gateway than ever, staff also have to deal with the extra fallout from illegal drones that have closed Britain’s second busiest airport – Gatwick. Floods of delayed and irate holiday-makers head towards Heathrow leaving the King and Queen of passenger well-being, Demi and Sue, to sort out the problem. Sue, meanwhile, goes celebrity spotting White House First Ladies, while Demi performs life-saving first aid during a medical emergency. Joining Demi and Sue in the terminals this year is newbie passenger experience manager Harry who is always hungry even when sick passengers bring back up their lunch. Outside, senior airfield officer and Heathrow favourite ‘Airside Ian’ returns for more adventures. In this series he is seen protecting planes from bird strikes, clearing snow off the airfield in winter storms, and for the first time, dealing with a full-on runway emergency. Ian describes the lengths he goes to, to protect aeroplanes from low-flying birds. He says: “Take a plastic bin liner. Hold it, you shake it, from a distance all they {crows} can see is a black object. From a distance it looks like you’ve got one of their mates.” Airside Ian is joined by Rachel and Sophie, from the airside safety team. This Cagney and Lacey-style crime-fighting duo keep Heathrow’s staff safe as they navigate the airfield, spotting any violations of Heathrow’s extensive health and safety rules – no-one messes with them! Also protecting the public this year are the Metropolitan Police’s boys in blue - Pc Terry and Pc Dave. Armed with semi-automatic weapons, Terry and Dave have their work cut out marshalling emergency landings, arresting law-breakers and helping passengers on their travels. While airport staff deals with the emergency landing of a plane with only one working engine, Pc Dave provides an insight into his role in the unfolding drama. He says: “I’ve been designated as the cordon officer so should there be anything dramatic that happens, I will be responsible for deploying units. Worst case scenario - I think we all know what that is - we’ve got everything here on standby ready to go.” Returning once again is series favourite ‘Border Force Bob’. He shows her his latest invention, the staff locator - a new piece of equipment that will revolutionise the way people communicate within hospitals and other businesses. In preparation for her London debutant season, Hannah begins etiquette classes. She is meant to be in Miss Laidlaw’s class - the A Class - but chooses to attend the more casual B class run by Nicholas Halliday (Matthew James Thomas). Samuel and his colleague Courtney (Gary Beadle) become suspicious when they realise they are constantly being followed by several men as they attend hearing aid fittings. At half term, the Petrukhins attend the Shaw’s for lunch where they meet Lord Arthur Wallington (Timothy Spall). Samuel explores the garden and discovers something curious.

John Bishop’s Ireland ITV1, 20.00

In the fourth, concluding episode, John travels to one of the most northerly parts of Ireland, Portrush. Battered by big swells and cold arctic winds, John goes swimming with a local swimming club, before discovering a unique taxi tradition in Belfast’s Falls Road. In South Armagh, he meets farmer Jas McDonald for an idiosyncratic take on the reality of living on the North and South border. It’s a rollicking and hilarious voyage that will not only follow John discovering iconic sights and quirky customs, but will also see him perform his comedy along the way, from a small and cramped gig in Belfast, through to the biggest stage in all of Ireland as he completes his journey in Dublin.

The Looming Tower BBC2, 21.30

Late August 1998. The US bombing of a pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum, Sudan, has caused uproar. And the missile strike on an al-Qaeda camp in Khost, Afghanistan, is seen as a failure since ‘UBL’ [Usama bin Laden] was not present. In his FBI office John O’Neill (Jeff Daniels) is annoyed his expenses claims are being queried by a junior official who knows O’Neill is in debt. He is not cheered by Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim) stating al-Qaeda represents an ideology that is too widespread to be stopped by killing one man like bin Laden - which would make him a martyr. In Washington Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard) denies the contact info obtained by the FBI in Nairobi has led the CIA’s ‘Alec Station’ to any fresh intel. But he is lying: surveillance and phone tapping of the man the bomber rang in Yemen, Ahmed Al-Hada, allows Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt) and the female analysts to catalogue his widespread contacts, deducing there is to be a key meeting in Malaysia. Meanwhile Schmidt’s dogged attempts to get a missile strike on an Arab royal bird hunt annoy CIA director George Tenet (Alec Baldwin), resulting in a big setback. Visiting family in Pennsylvania, Soufan finds his mother has set him up with a young woman who is bright and amusing. He later admits this to Heather (Ella Rae Peck) on their third date - she is understandably puzzled as to how he regards their own connection. The camp Walla has now reached a full-on training set-up, and two of the other new arrivals are Saudi citizens Khalid al-Mihdhar (Tawfeek Barhom), who left his wife with her father, Al-Hada, and Nawaf al-Hazmi (Nebras Jamali). Their nationality is key to the next phase of al-Qaeda’s plans.

Halifax, 1832. Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) returns from Hastings to Shibden Hall, having discovered that her would-be companion and lover, the aristocratic Vere Hobart (Jodhi May), has accepted a marriage proposal from a man. Despite her affection for her elderly aunt (Gemma Jones), Anne is frustrated by the shabbiness of her ancestral home and finds her father (Timothy West) and long-suffering sister (Gemma Whelan) difficult to live with. A visit from her ex-lover Mariana Lawton (Lydia Leonard) compounds Anne’s fear that she is destined to be alone. However, when Anne discovers that her land is rich in coal, her plans to transform the estate soon provide a welcome distraction from her broken heart. On the neighbouring estate, Crow Nest, shy heiress Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle) is quietly delighted to hear that charismatic Anne Lister is back. Meanwhile, Anne’s servants and tenants have problems of their own. A hit-and-run accident on Shibden land puts a child’s life at risk, and Anne’s French maid Eugénie finds herself in trouble.

Great Manchester Run BBC2, 12.00

Gabby Logan presents live coverage of the Great Manchester Run as some of the best athletes in the world take to the streets alongside 30,000 fun runners, many of whom are taking part to raise money for charity. Ugandan Olympic distance runner Jacob Kiplimo leads a competitive men’s field. The 18-year-old claimed silver at the World Cross Country Championships in March and is tipped to become a global superstar. In the women’s race, it is Kenya versus Ethiopia with two greats going headto-head - world and Commonwealth 5000m gold medallist Hellen Obiri lines up against Olympic 1500m silver medallist Genzebe Dibaba in what should be an electrifying encounter. As well as the elite runners, the masses will line up for the 10k and half-marathon routes to raise money and awareness for many good causes, and along the way, we’ll hear some of the wide-ranging reasons behind their reason to run. Commentary comes from Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe with Radzi Chinyanganya and JJ Chalmers reporting.

Now juggling day jobs with their endless renovations, Mike and Alison are both penniless and exhausted when a luxury hotel chain makes them an offer they can’t refuse. While the clueless spirits brainstorm money-making schemes, the Captain takes matters into his own hands.

This time, Neil Connery asks, ‘What next for the Kurds?’ As the largest stateless nation in the world comes to a crossroads. He meets female Peshmerga fighters and celebrates Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, alongside 25,000 people in the mountains. Rachel Younger visits the unique Danish community of Christiania, which prides itself on consensus and sustainability but is increasingly becoming an area of tension. And Rebecca Barry travels to Sweden to meet the people getting microchips put under their skin to use as personal ID badges or even as self-scanning credit cards. She visits an office where 10 per cent of the workforce are now chipped and asks if this is the future. NEIL CONNERY – IRAQ: They played a defining part in helping to defeat the so-called Islamic State in both Iraq and Syria. The Kurdish community, comprising 30 million people spread across five different countries, remains the largest stateless ethnicity in the world. After years of persecution, IraqiKurds now enjoy a degree of autonomy and freedom - but they’re still hoping that one day they’ll have a state to call their own. Neil Connery goes to Iraqi Kurdistan ahead of the most important celebration in their calendar, Newroz, the Kurdish New Year. He meets female Peshmerga soldiers fighting on the frontlines and hipsters who have achieved social media fame by aiming to bring perfect tailoring to Erbil. Finally, Neil heads to the mountains where hundreds of fiery beacons usher in the new year. RACHEL YOUNGER – DENMARK: Christiania is one of Copenhagen’s most popular tourist attractions. For nearly 50 years, it has also been one of the world’s most unique social experiments. This small independent city inside Copenhagen is a communal society run by consensus, with a strong focus on sustainability and the environment. Rachel Younger visits some of the people who call Christiania home to see if the project still works. Given recent reports of tensions between police and drug gangs, she asks what the future holds for Denmark’s utopian experimental community. REBECCA BARRY – SWEDEN: Carrying credit cards, Oyster cards - even your house keys or ID - will soon become a thing of the past if bio-hackers get their way. About 4,000 people in Sweden have already been ‘chipped’ and some organisations say implants could be on their way to the UK. Rebecca Barry attends an ‘implant party’, where the biohacking-curious gather and the committed are then chipped with the latest flashing implant. Is this the beginning of a bright future, asks Rebecca, where chips will one day be able to diagnose and foresee health problems? Or is it a way to keep an ever-closer eye on human movements?

Episode 4: Painting the Modern Garden – Monet to Matisse Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not

alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, featured in an innovative and extensive exhibition from The Royal Academy of Arts, London. From the exhibition walls to the wonder and beauty of artists’ gardens like Giverny and Seebüll, the film takes a magical and widely travelled journey to discover how different contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated modern gardens to explore expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and utopian ideas. Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring fascination with gardens today.

The circus comes to town! KEDDY’S Entertainment is constantly on the look-out, to bring you all the latest entertainment offerings, and to keep you updated regarding the various elements of entertainment, that can be found on our wonderful island.

So we are all pleased, proud and excited, here at Keddy’s Entertainment, to tell you about, and present, a brandnew evening excursion for Tenerife and the Canaries. Adam Keddy, director and owner of Keddy’s Entertainment, wanted to design, produce and deliver an international show, which was suitable for all our multinational and most-welcome guests, who visit our beautiful island. It is a project and labour of love, about which he has long been passionate. He has worked extremely hard to initiate this, along with Van Elliott, his good friend, promoter, and fellow Magnifique Xanadu business partner. Adam’s years of experience within the tourist industry have served him well. His love of stage management and choreography, and wide-ranging knowledge and contacts within the entertainment scene, has

resulted in positive discussions with the tourist board and leading tour operators. They will begin promoting and marketing the excursion for this summer, beginning Sunday, 26th May. Van Elliott arrived on this island in 1978 at the Los Rodeos airport, before the airport in the South or the motorway had even opened up! Van’s in-depth knowledge of the island, and wonderful Canarian connections, have been invaluable, and the joint enterprise has produced a truly different and spectacular show! A futuristic circus, unlike any other, designed, produced and developed by Adam Keddy of Keddy’s Entertainment and his associates, Adam would like to personally thank Ivan and all the cast involved, who have supported this new and exciting highlight for Summer 2019, to serve an international market. The show is multi-national, thus catering for all our wonderful visitors, holidaymakers and residents, world wide. It is a futuristic show with artistes from different and exciting parallel dimensions, that form and present a diverse circus troupe, unlike any other! It consists of a selected multinational cast, displaying a dazzling array of talent, including visual acrobatic artistes, outstanding vocalists, breathtaking illusions, magic and other hidden gems, for all nationalities to experience

and enjoy. Our show will take you on a visual journey, and delve into the lives of our unique characters, and a battle of love, despair and triumph will take place. This is a family entertainment show, which fuses a circus theme with the aesthetics of “steam punk” “sub-culture”, in a series of musical numbers, with acrobatics, choreography and magic, in the form of storytelling and visuals. We have combined a taste of Tenerife with an international show.

This is all set in a truly local, authentic, Canarian, rustic setting, serving a tasty traditional Canarian BBQ for everyone to enjoy. Vegetarian and children’s menu options will, of course, be available. We have a multi-national commercial team on hand, to help and assist all our international clientele, headed up by our multilingual, commercial and entertainment team leader, the lovely Samantha. So, until next time, Adam, Van and all the team, from

both Keddy’s Entertainment and Magnifique Xanandu, invite you to experience Magnifique Xanadu on the 26th May, and every Sunday evening, throughout the year. Book now to reserve your seats for a taste of Tenerife, and a unique experience for everyone to feast upon, and make a truly Magnifique memory from www.xanadushow.com, or contact our booking office on 922 09 01 31. Until next time, take care and enjoy the weather.

Paris mystery of missing student, who is back now NATALIA Sánchez Uribe, a Spanish Erasmus student who went missing last week in Paris, has been found alive, says Spain’s Foreign Ministry.

The 22-year-old had not been heard from since 1st May, when she was found, slightly disorientated, and taken to hospital. Guardia Civil officers, working closely with French police, said the woman had been at the Henri Ey Hospital, near the university, for several days. The European Foundation for Missing Persons has spoken with the woman’s family, who do not want to share any more details about the case. The family have also asked for privacy. Her mother, Inma Uribe, has sent out a message through the foundation’s Twitter account, saying: “Hello, I am Natalia’s mother and I would like to inform you that Natalia is all right. So I ask everyone to respect our need for peace and quiet.” Natalia, an economics and business student at Barcelona’s Autonomous University, has been studying at the Sorbonne Economics School, on the Erasmus European exchange programme, since last September, and her course ends in a week. Her rucksack, holding her laptop and mobile phone, was found on Tuesday in a park close to the

university, said her pals. On the morning of her disappearance, she was moving out of her apartment to live with a friend, even though she had just two weeks left before graduating. After leaving two suitcases with the friend, Natalia said she would return with a third, but she never came back. Her landlord said she never showed up to return the keys on 2nd May, as agreed. Her pals said Natalia had told them she was feeling “watched and followed”, while her parents, who live in Mallorca but were originally from Granada, have travelled to Paris to keep up to date with the investigation.

Third baby’s death from same bacterial infection

A PREMATURE baby is believed to have died from the same bacterial infection which killed another two in Cataluña. The baby, born at 24 weeks, was admitted to Girona’s Josep Trueta Hospital suffering

from Klebsiella pneumonia. Two further premature infants have shown signs of being affected by the infection. But, so far, they have suffered no illness, according to the Institut Catala de Salut. Previously, another two babies had died from the strain, which is antibiotic resistant, at Barcelona’s Vall

d’Hebron hospital. The Josep Trueta Hospital neonatal unit informed the Girona Department of Health’s Epidemiology Surveillance Service of the outbreak. It has also stepped up its bacterial-control measures to identify the source of the outbreak, and reduce the risk of further infection.

a 48-year-old German man. The female expat was “most affected”, according to witnesses, after her silk dress caught fire when the Captain Jack Sparrow cocktail ignited. “The couple literally went up in flames,” said one fellow reveller at Santa Catalina’s El Neo bar, in Carrer de la Boteria. “The burning woman stripped to her waist and fled outside. She was frightened,

hurt, naked… and going into shock,” he added. “She was literally left to sit outside on the pavement.” The witness also claimed the bar did not have a water tap, and that “customers had to use drinking water to help douse the flames”. A National Policeman spokesperson said they were trying to find out more details about the contents of the drink. According to El Neo’s menu,

the cocktail contains rum, pineapple juice, passion fruit, over-proof rum and cinnamon, selling for €9. The El Neo owner said: “It was an accident and everything was quickly brought under control,” adding that the bar “does have a tap”. The female victim was taken by air ambulance to the burns unit at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron hospital, while the two men were treated at Palma’s Son Espases.

Exploding cocktail leaves a trio of injured drinkers A ROMANTIC evening ended in disaster, when a young couple suffered thirddegree burns from an exploding cocktail in a Mallorcan bar. Police are investigating last week’s incident, which led to a Swedish woman, 33, being airlifted to hospital, while her partner, 34, was also hospitalised, along with

Horror blaze claims life, in building for squatters ONE person has died, three men were seriously injured and around 80 people were evacuated after fire swept through a squatters’ building in Ibiza.

Firefighters made the grim discovery of a corpse, which was so badly burned that they were unable to tell the victim’s sex. The alarm was raised at about 1pm last Monday, when one of the squatters heard a woman’s screams and alerted the emergency services. An Ibanat (forestry firefighters) helicopter had to be scrambled to rescue two people, who became trapped in an attic in the apartment block, on Calle Jacinto Aquenza. Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles as the fierce fire blazed, but it was finally brought under control at around 4.30pm. Initially, two fire appliances, plus ground-based Ibanat personnel, were called in, as well as five ambulances, whose crews treated 10 people, all taken to hospital. Three Moroccan men were in a critical condition as a result

of the fire, one of them falling around 20 feet, reported the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera. He was trying, desperately, to escape the flames, and is in intensive care, suffering from burns, smoke inhalation and injuries from the fall. Another one of the trio, who suffered serious burns, has been transferred to the Burns Unit of Valencia’s Hospital La Fe, while the third man is also nursing bad burns. Firefighters have also found the bodies of two dogs in the charred remains of the building.

Millionaire Brit selects top architects for richest of all

A BRITISH property mogul, married to model/actress Lisa B, is behind a hip new development in the Balearic Islands. Anton Bilton has drafted in a raft of globallyknown architects to create an “eclectic community” for the White Island of Ibiza.

The development, which will feature its own nightclub and spa, is being created for a staggering €360m, and, naturally, it is aimed at the super-rich. Its collection of 50 cuttingedge properties sit in the 42-acre Sabina estate. The amazing properties, which are around 1,300sq/m in size, feature infinity pools and stunning grounds. Renowned architects, such as Sir David Chipperfield, Ami Szmelcman and Rick

Joy, have designed some of the homes. Raven Property Group founder Anton Bilton, the UK’s 892nd richest man, according to the Sunday Times, said: “I imagined an eclectic community of like-minded owners, attracted to Ibiza and its environment of freedom without prejudice. “We are creating a place where children can run around the gardens, or play tennis with friends, in a family and luxury environment.”

Cats Welfare News

Archie needs our help! THIS poor old boy had been living in misery on a hotel complex for some time. But a tourist alerted us to him, and he was finally caught and taken to the vet. Thankfully, he tested negative for leukaemia, but he has a terrible infection in his mouth which is preventing him from eating. As a result, his antibodies are not fighting the

infection too well. He needs cortisone injections every 15 days, and then will require tablets and a special diet. He also has a kidney problem, which is related to his age. Fortunately, Archie has been in the care of our new Cats Welfare vet, Gustavo, at Centro Veterinario Sur in Armeñime: 646 729 210 or 922 125 590. Gustavo has a very good reputation, and we know that Archie is in very capable hands.

Molly’s Animal Care News

Meet Simba

THIS lovely chap is urgently looking for a foster home or forever family. He was a well-loved family pet, but, when a baby came along, the family could not cope, and had no option but to give him up.

He’s not enjoying kennels and really needs to be in a home environment. He is medium-sized with long hair, and a lovely friendly boy who loves lots of fuss and cuddles. He’s fine with other dogs, too. Please get in touch, if you can offer our lovely Simba a home.

He says that once Archie has recovered, he can lead a decent life, although he will always need medication. Please help Archie get better soon, by donating towards his treatment. You can send money by PayPal at info@catswelfare-tenerife.com, via our online fundraising page www.gofundme.com/catswelfare-trap-neuter-returnre-homing-etc or pop along to the shop in San Blas, and leave money in an envelope with Archie’s name on it. Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated money for him. We really appreciate your kindness. Adoptions We have several beautiful kittens available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. If you would like to meet them, please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * We need you! Fostering kittens is very rewarding, watching them growing and playing, feeding them and realising how dependent they are on you. It’s perfect for people who

don’t want a full-time cat of their own. We are looking for foster carers, to look after bottlefeeders and weaners, as well as big kittens. You would need to be able to drive, and have somewhere safe for them. All food and litter, bedding, litter trays etc. will be supplied, and any vet bills will be paid by us. Please help us to help the kittens in need. Cats Welfare arrange the adoptions, once the kittens are ready. Please send us a Facebook private message, if you are interested. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens

OVER 100 people gathered at La Camella’s Camel Park last Saturday, to join in the Hoedown fun at the first-ever charity event, organised by Happy2Help, which aids the homeless throughout Tenerife. An amazing team, headed by Stephanie Tudge, organised a delicious BBQ, with live entertainment and a raffle, raising a superb sum of 2,327 euros, on the day. Steve Fawkes proved to be a superb MC for the afternoon, supported by many local entertainers, organised by Ginny Garcia and Angela Mowberry, who gave their time, free of charge. Needless to say, Julie Moss, Michaela Bridges, Stacey Tippett, Michelle and Brenda Minty were all in top form, getting everyone up dancing. The children enjoyed free camel rides, as well as facepainting and an extremelyentertaining magician, both supplied, generously, by Keddy’s Entertainment. The Venezuelan cooking team, comprising Jenny, Orsman, Ara and Luis, served up quality hamburgers, hotdogs and pork chops, supplied by Jean Pierre, of the Meat Boutique, at a special rate, with various salads. And the team worked extremely hard to keep everyone fed! The bar, organised by

to Sweden a couple months ago. For those who don’t know the story of Reina, she was a young puppy who was flying to Sweden, with her new, forever family. Arriving in Sweden turned into a nightmare, because her microchip couldn’t be read, even though it had been put in by a vet and checked. Things were not looking good for her. We were given different options to try to rectify the situation, such as sending her back to Tenerife, putting her in quarantine or putting her to sleep, which, of course, we were not going to let happen. We chose to put her into quarantine, but this came at great expense, and we are currently holding fundraisers to pay this huge bill. Reina spent 21 days in quarantine in Sweden, and was happily reunited with her new family at the end of April. The cost of Reina being kept in quarantine was

over €2,500, but worth every cent, if it meant that Reina could stay in Sweden, and also be reunited with her new family. Now, we need to raise money for the bill, which is how this fundraiser came about. Please come along and support us on the 1st June, from 3pm. We would be so appreciative of any support you can give. Meet our dogs! We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 9.30am-1.30pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com

Manhattan’s Bar’s Julie Moss, in conjunction with One Stop, proved a roaring success, and, as the afternoon went on, more supplies were required… and were supplied! To top the day off, the Arona Las Galletas Costa del Silencio Lions Club also presented the charity with a cheque for a further 3,000 euros, making a grand total for the day of 5,327 euros. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the community coming together and digging deep, so a big thank-you to everyone who came along, and also to the most-generous local businesses, who donated prizes for the raffle. Happy2Help, now in its third year throughout Tenerife, has been helping people to help themselves by collecting and distributing much-needed clothes, bedding, household items, furniture, medicines and much more, for those who are without. The charity works directly with families and couples, to help

get them back on their feet by issuing food parcels, school books and trainers for the children, plus bus fares to help the adults get to work, and much more. Happy2Help is also supporting and working closely with the centre for the homeless in Santa Ursula, in the North. If you missed the event and would like to make a donation, here are the bank account details: ES28 0049 4441 6927 1001 5941. If you have any items of clothing, bedding, furniture etc., which we can distribute, please call Steph on 658 086 453, who, with the help of her amazing team, will be happy to arrange collection. A note for your diary: the next Happy2Help charity event will be staged on Saturday 26th October, again at the Camel Park, for another Hoedown. See you all there. Dieters are steaming in, for magic beans! EDAMAME, already a staple ingredient in vegetarian and vegan ready meals, as well as restaurant menus, in many western countries, has only just found its way to the vegetable racks of Spain’s supermarkets. But after advertising it as “a tasty snack that helps you lose weight without trying”, stores across the country have run out, just as fast as they stock it. Edamame, a young, unripe, soya bean, consumed in its pod, is normally boiled or steamed, with or without salt, and eaten whole. It means that no peeling,

chopping or other preparation is required, and the magic beans can be ready to eat in two or three minutes. They are filling and full of flavour, but with no fat, minimal carbohydrates and few calories. That enables serial fridge-raiders to chomp them all day without worrying

too much about putting on extra pounds, or kilos. Edamame pods have followed the same trail as aloe vera, green tea and quinoa, as low-fat, highnutrition foodstuffs, which have made their way around the world, on to the plates and into the cups of those

who seek optimum health benefits from their diet. Until now, other than in Asian restaurants, and even then, rarely, edamame beans have rarely been seen in Spain. But as soon as they appear on supermarket shelves, they vanish faster than the chains can restock them. Carlos Ríos, founder of the Spanish movement “Realfooding”, contacted Mercadona when he was unable to buy his usual supply. He tagged the supermarket on Twitter with the message: “Let the Edamame Hunger Games commence!” They replied to his tweet, saying: “We are currently out of stock, and, over the course of the coming summer, we will again be offering this product in our stores.

“We apologise for any inconvenience. We have taken your comments on board and shared them with those in charge of this product. Best regards.” A flood of tweets followed from all over the country, with one, presumably tongue-incheek, claiming her daughter was crying because her “usual poke-bowl” was short of the magic beans. El Corte Inglés supermarkets, catching on to the “Edamame Hunger Games” theme, posted a photograph of a scene from the film with the caption: “We’ve got them!” Other consumers on Twitter have said “the hunt is now on”, urging people to stockpile their freezers “so they can survive until summer”, when Mercadona replenishes its stock.

Food with a view!

17th May 2019 - 23rd May 2019

By John Zammit IT’S not very often that my partner and I venture to the beach to have dinner. We normally reserve that treat for weekend lunch, with a lazy stroll attached. But, recently, we headed to Fañabe beach front, to a recently-opened restaurant, and we weren’t disappointed. The restaurant’s location is great. It’s right on the sea front, with stunning views. There are three car parks, all within a fiveminute walk. When we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by a friendly member of staff, who asked if we were dining, or just wanted a drink. We said we’d like to eat, and were shown to our seats. All the tables offered great views of the ocean. Our drinks order was taken, and, after looking through the menu, we decided that we wouldn’t go for the Tbone steak, chips and salad for two people (a bargain at only €25), which we had originally said we would have. We opted for something we would not have generally cooked or had at home. We chose from the tapas menu for our starters, and ordered the mixed platter, comprising nachos, wings and croquettes. While waiting for our starters, the waitress brought us bread and a tray of six sauces (6 salsas - hence the restaurant’s name). These come with every meal. The bread was

very dark, and looked as though it were going to be very stodgy and heavy. I was told it was Belgian bread, and, after breaking some off and trying it, it was completely the opposite - light and tasty. We tried each of the sauces (pepper, mushroom, chili, tomato salsa, sour cream and Thousand Islands) with the bread, with nothing lasting on the table very long! Our starters arrived. First up were the nachos, in a separate dish. These are fried pieces of corn tortilla, of Mexican origin. They were followed by the Buffalo wings, (unbreaded chicken wings), and, of course, the croquettes - small, breadcrumbed, fried food rolls, with a meat filling. Everything was very tasty, and I’m happy to report that nothing was left on our plates. The restaurant was modern and airy, and we enjoyed watching

the sun going down, while waiting for our main course. Before long, my partner’s cod and my ribs were delivered. Cod is a mild-tasting fish, and the ways of giving it a glorious flavour are endless. Bistro 6 Salsas cooked theirs to perfection. It was flakey, and the garlic-andonion topping brought out all its flavours. My partner enjoyed the dish, immensely, with the fresh salad and beautifully-cooked potatoes. The ribs were bright in colour and served on a board. I could actually cut them without worrying that they were going to go flying. Not that would have been a possibility, because they were really tender, and the meat just fell off the bone. The chips were nicely seasoned, hot (not always the way in some restaurants) and crispy, which made the perfect match for the ribs. It was a huge rack, and I couldn’t eat it all. By the time we had finished our meal the sun was just about to set, and what a sight that was! We started to notice the lighting in the restaurant. Lights were wrapped around hanging plants, and there were large light bulbs with the elements on full show. None too bright, and none too

low. These added to the ambience, along with the background music, which was well thought out, and not intrusive. We decided not to have deserts because we were both full, and

asked for the bill. This was presented with two shots, and a container holding three dice. The waiter advised us that if we threw three ones in three goes, then our drinks would be taken off of the bill. I only threw two, but it was a fun way to end the meal. It’s the little things that make the difference, and there were lots of those,

throughout the night. We both enjoyed a great evening, and will be visiting again to try the steak that we were originally going to have! Bistro 6 Salsas is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, from 11am10pm. Spanish and Western dishes are served, as well as seafood. For reservations, call 922 702 262, or find them on Facebook.

Driving-licence codes

By Emma

from Motorworld

YOU may have noticed that on the reverse of your licence there are codes against certain categories. We are sure that most people don’t take any notice, and/or don’t know what they signify, but you can avoid getting a fine if you are aware of restrictions that you may have on your licence. The front of the licence is self-explanatory, but we will explain all. 1. Shows your surname or names 2. Shows your Christian name or names (sometimes known

By Val Sainsbury

as given names) 3. Your date and place of birth 4a. The date of the start of this particular licence b - The date of expiry of the licence c - Province of issue 5. Your NIE/DNI number 6. Your photo 7. Your signature, as put on the application form 8. Categories permitted to drive 9. Categories 10. Start date of the original licence (not the start date as

shown at item 4a if the licence has been exchanged from another country or renewed) 11. Expiry date of the licence 12. Codes. These are what are known as the “hidden codes” 13. Previous licence numbers The hidden codes used under section 12 could be: 01.01. You must wear glasses 01.02. You must wear contact lenses 01.03. You must wear safety glasses 02. You are required to wear a hearing communication /

aid 03. You need a prosthetic / orthotic limb 05. Driving restrictions for medical reasons 05.01 You may only drive in daylight 05.02 You are restricted to within a radius of x km around the place of your residence/ region 05.03 You may only drive without passengers /pillion riders 05.04 Restricted to maximum permitted speed of X kph 05.05 Driving only permitted

with passenger holding a driving licence 05.06 Without trailers 05.07. Not permitted to drive on motorways 05.08. No alcohol permitted. Zero tolerance So, have a look and see what restrictions, if any, you have. If you have a 01 code and have had a sight rectification operation and no longer need glasses, you will need to undergo an extra medical exam, and submit that to Tráfico to have the restriction removed.

metabolic damage. But Boston University researchers wanted to see how drinking sugary soda, soft drinks and fruit juice, impacts the human brain. Using MRI imaging, cognitive tests and existing data, scientists found that drinking more than two sugary drinks, or more than three sodas, a day, results in smaller brain volume. The brain actually shrinks, reducing the size of the hippocampus. It also sets accelerated brain ageing into motion, and results in poorer memory. These are all risk factors for early-stage Alzheimer’s. Even a diet soda a day results in smaller brain volume. Boston University showed the first connection between

diet soda and dementia, but there’s a long list of medical research, linking artificiallysweetened drinks to a slew of other health problems. These include: *Depression: drinking more than four cans a day is linked to a 30% higher risk of depression *Kidney damage: long-term diet-soda drinking is linked to a 30% reduction in kidney function *Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome: drinking diet soda daily increases your risk of metabolic syndrome by 36%; it increases your risk of Type 2 diabetes by 67%, compared with non-diet soda drinkers. Better health drinks Why drink something that shortens your life? Try these things instead: *Tea can lower your risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 86%, and drinking coffee can lower your risk of depression by 10% *Try drinking kombucha tea instead. Known as the “Immortal Health Elixir” by the Chinese, it’s bursting with gutfriendly probiotics *Bone broth sells for upwards of $10 a cup in New York City, and is making a comeback. Try tapping into its healing power.

Avoiding all diet drinks definitely a no-brainer!

MANY people wonder whether diet drinks are bad for them, even though they may seem like a better option, compared with the sugary variety.

But research shows that this isn’t the case. And now, we have even more reason to avoid diet drinks at all costs. Artificially-sweetened drinks increase the risk of strokes and dementia. Researchers at Boston University looked at the numbers, and found that people who enjoy diet drinks are nearly three times more likely to experience these devastating conditions. And sugar-sweetened drinks aren’t much better! Researchers studied the sodadrinking tendencies of nearly 3,000 adults, and found some startling data on diet-soda consumption. When looking at people more than 45 years old for strokes, and older than 60 for dementia, they found that drinking diet soda regularly almost triples the risk of developing strokes or dementia.

That risk held true, even after considering other risk factors such over-eating, diet quality, exercise levels and smoking. Sudha Seshadri, MD, of Boston University’s Alzheimer’s Disease Centre said: “These studies are not the be-all and end-all, but it’s strong data and a very strong suggestion. It looks as though there is not very much of an upside to having sugary drinks, and substituting the sugar with artificial sweeteners doesn’t seem to help. Maybe good, old-fashioned water is something we need to get used to.” But the Boston University research team didn’t stop there. They also investigated impacts of drinking regular fizzy pop. And while sugar-

sweetened beverages were not associated with strokes or dementia to the same extent, this type of soda comes with its own set of problems. Whether it’s “real” sugar, or high fructose corn syrup dangers, related to soda, the science is clear. The sugar industry scandal of the Fifties and Sixties set a dietary disaster into motion. Faulty sugar-industry-funded studies shifted public perception, tricking people into thinking that fat, not sugar, was the nutritional villain. Now, we know better, understanding that healthy fats are vital for good health. But still too many people are downing soda. Excess sugar is a well-known, heartdisease trigger, causing major

CD Tenerife

Tenerife job made harder, after sacking head coach!

THIS was always going to be a tough trip to Los Cármenes for Tenerife, because secondplaced Granada have been in blistering, promotion-chasing form.

In a week when the world of football had been shaken by improbable comebacks, the home team dominated from start to finish, showing exactly why they are heading for Spain’s top league. Tenerife have been suffering early goals and a lack of chances in recent games, and Granada opened their account with the first chance of the game, in the 11th minute. Antonio Puertas won the ball in midfield and played a lovely through-ball to Rodri, who, one-on-one with Dani Hernández, easily slotted it past the keeper. To be honest, it all looked so easy for the “rojlibancos”, and Granada continued to dominate, putting even more pressure on the visiting defence, who didn’t have an answer. The Andalucian team, who monopolised the chances, doubled their lead after 30 minutes, when Tenerife failed to clear the ball. It was almost like a game of volleyball in the goal area, until it ricocheted to San Emeterio, who turned and shot past Dani from 10 yards, giving the nowrampant Granada a twogoal cushion. It was clear that Tenerife would have to capitalise on any half-chance, as they were few and far between. In the opening minutes of the second half, Borja Lasso had a good header saved by Rui Silva, and Granada had a chance to close the game altogether, only for Rodri to mis-kick the ball, which hit the bar from pointblank range. Tenerife responded on the hour with Fernando Coniglio heading home a beauty from a set-piece, only for the linesman, rightly, ruling him offside. Granada continued to keep possession and looked comfortable as the game entered its final phase. But Tenerife did have a chance,

which was well-taken. A lovely cross from Perez fell to Malbasic on the corner of the 18-yard box, and he smashed it high in to the net past two defenders and an outstretched Silva to make it 2-1 on 82 minutes. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, for Tenerife, and while they still have serious relegation issues, Granada are now firmly in second place, with promotion beckoning. Tenerife lie 17th, just two

points ahead of Lugo and Raya Majadahonda, with the dreaded drop beckoning. On paper, their task is simple on paper: Tenerife cannot afford another loss! Realistically, three of the four relegation places have already been decided, and CDT are one of half-a-dozen clubs battling to avoid the final one. What they need is stronger defensive work, goal chances taken… and

stability for Oltra’s men. But even these tactics were thrown wide open last Sunday, when Tenerife’s board of directors decided to terminate manager José Luis Oltra’s contract, with immediate effect. It was his second stint there as head coach, in which he was in charge for 32 matches (eight wins, 13 draws and 11 defeats) this time, making him the longest-serving leader, with 160 official matches in

charge of the blanquiazul. Along with Oltra, Emilio Isierte (assistant coach) and Marcos Chena (physical trainer) also departed, to make way for the appointment of Luis Ángel César Sampedro and his own back-room staff. Sampedro was a goalkeeper in his playing days, and he has over 500 games under his belt as a coach in La Liga Santander, La Liga 1 | 2 | 3 and Second Division B, most recently at Real Valladolid. Before his first Tenerife training session last Monday, he said he was excited about the new challenge facing him, particularly for the rest of this season, and that he had brought in two people with Tenerife experience to assist him. His second-in-charge is Tenerife legend Cristo Marrero (previously coach of Juvenil A CD Tenerife), while Maykol Hernandez is to be the new fitness trainer. The Tenerife board took the opportunity to welcome the new first-team coach and his staff, wishing Sampedro all kinds of professional and personal successes during his time as a blanquiazul. And, so do we… because, to be honest, they really do need some magic!

Hillsborough Disaster: official’s fined £11,500

GRAHAM MACKRELL, former club secretary of Sheffield Wednesday, has been fined £6,500 (€7,533) during a sentencing over the Hillsborough Disaster in an 11-week trial.

The former official was also ordered to pay £5,000 (€5,794) after being found guilty of failing his duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act. A jury found Mackrell had failed to ensure there were enough turnstiles to prevent crowds building up outside the club’s grounds. The 69-year-old is, so far, the first person to be convicted during a long-running case into the Hillsborough disaster, which took place in 1989. Ninety-six Liverpool fans died following a crush at the central pens in the Leppings Lane terrace at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest. At the same trial, the jury failed to reach a verdict over match commander David Duckenfield, who was accused of negligent manslaughter.

Hotel prices soar to €26,000 for final of Champions League

FORGET a cheeky spring escape to Madrid at the end of the month, because the average price for a two-night stay in the capital is coming in at around €5,000… for the hotel accommodation alone!

Nearly all the site’s rooms on Take Booking.com are now booked in Madrid, and they are running out quickly, such is the demand to watch the Liverpool-Tottenham showdown. And even hostels are charging 10 times their usual fees. A two-night stay on the weekend of 31st May to 2nd June could prove to be the most expensive ever in Spanish or even European history. A survey reveals that there isn’t an available place for under €1,000 on Booking.com or Trivago. Plenty are over €20,000, including Hotel Wellington at €24,000 and Santo Mauro at €26,000, in which David Beckham once lived, and that’s before you even order a Coke! And if you think you’re being clever by, perhaps, staying in Toledo, Aranjuez or Chinchon, all within easy reach of the capital, then give it a go! But for that weekend, the hotels are already full, and whatever’s left will charge around the

same, astronomical price. The exclusive Santo Mauro hotel will set you back €26,000, and even Airbnb is on the same wavelength, most flats and apartments costing well over €2,000 for two nights! Liverpool and Tottenham fans were advised to fly via Palma to Madrid, after flights also shot up to more than €1,500 last week after the British teams’ amazing, comeback successes. Tickets for their clash were weighing in at a mind-boggling 3,000-4,000 euros each, with many sporting and ticket sites offering them for much more. The English clubs booked their

spots in the Champions League final on 1st June after pulling off two of the finest comebacks in football history, beating Barcelona and Ajax, 4-0 and 3-2, respectively. Alternative routes have been revealed for those travelling to the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, including a flight from Manchester to Brussels, to Palma, and then Madrid, and returning to Manchester via Berlin, which would work out at just €175. But this mammoth journey does, however, mean setting off on 30th May and not returning until 4th June, having spent five nights in Madrid!

Superstar Rafa set to marry

Tennis

RAFA Nadal, Mallorca’s tennis superstar, will marry his long-standing girlfriend sooner than expected, according to Spanish TV. The news that the 17-time Grand Slam champion was finally going to marry Xisco Perelló, his partner of 14 years, was first hinted at by Hola magazine in January. But details have been hard to come by, apart from a vague “in the Autumn” date, with Rafa and Xisco remaining tight-lipped.
