Flexi-access drawdown

An annuity can secure regular income for the rest of your life

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Traffic-light ‘begging’ is no longer permitted

Continued from Front The new regulations include: for the first time, users of mopeds or personal mobility vehicles (VMP), such as electric scooters, must adhere to a mandatory 30km/h limit on all one-way streets; no more car-valeting activity and “begging” at traffic lights; restrictions on vehicle traffic, through contamination or safety, and the introduction of rotating (limited) parking areas, both free and paid. Once the final approval of the new enforcements is agreed by the City Council, they will come into force when published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), which is expected in the coming days. The Santa Cruz Traffic Ordinance began more than two years ago. It was approved, initially, in the February, at which point the document, which has 131 articles, was submitted to public information.

A total of 173 claims were presented by entities and individuals, which were analysed and answered. And many of them have involved some modifications to the initial text. For example, the age allowed for use in the city of personal mobility vehicles changes from 16 to “after 15 years of age”. The reference to the term “autobus” is eliminated from the whole text, to be replaced by “guaguas”. Also, “interurban” roads has been changed to “autopista”, and, within their own municipality, Local Police can carry out tests to determine the degree of alcoholic or drug intoxication of drivers; and, in pedestrian zones with shared areas for vehicles, as well as pedestrian priority, citizens may cross any part of it, with due diligence. The PP’s Zaida González, the first Deputy Mayor and Mobility and Security Councillor, emphasises that her team have been working until the last minute,

to be able to approve this, definitively, so it is important for the city that it was finished before the mandate. And they have achieved it! “We wanted to fulfil the commitment to update the regulations that had already been obsolete, as it was approved 34 years ago,” she said. “We can say that Santa Cruz already has an ordinance of the 21st century, with which, for example, the city prepares itself for the vehicles of the future, including those for personal mobility, and scooters or electric motorcycles.” Ms González also announced that several companies, dedicated to the rental of scooters and electric motorcycles, have expressed an interest in settling in with the municipality ‘chicharrero’ (inhabitants). The Acting Mayor added: “With this new ordinance, we have regulated the use, by the city, of these vehicles, and also of bicycles, as well as parking.”

Guardia officer is stabbed repeatedly by suicidal boy AN officer from the Guardia Civil, based in La Victoria, Tenerife, was stabbed several times while on duty in La Matanza, assisting a medical team.

He was among a group of officers, called out to an emergency, involving an individual threatening to commit suicide. They were asked to assist an ambulance team who had been summoned by a concerned parent, saying her son was in a psychotic state, and had been all day. She had become extremely worried because he began threatening to kill himself, violently. Once the ambulance team and the officers arrived at the small fishing village of Caletón de La Matanza, in Acentejo, they learned that the son had barricaded himself in the house. The officers asked him to step outside, to try to resolve the situation, telling him they just wanted to talk. Suddenly, he appeared at the front door, then ran towards the officers, holding a knife and an axe! One officer tried to restrain him, which is when he was injured, suffering wounds to his arms, ears and head. Fortunately, the ambulance team were able to assist the officer, before taking him to a La Victoria medical centre for more treatment, Other Guardia officers, based in Tacoronte, were also at the scene at the time of the incident, restraining the assailant with a type of pepper spray.

Once he’d been captured, he was taken to a psychiatric unit for further medical assistance. The Guardia Civil union, AUGG, issued a statement, claiming that the attack could have been avoided, had officers received the correct training for these types of incidents, as well as special training for the use of a Taser. The AUGG believes that many officers lack specific training in these types of situations, in which vulnerable people are involved. It has also been indicated that training in this area is limited, and, mysteriously, is offered to officers for just one day, every six months. Francisco Javier Merideño, General Secretary of the Santa Cruz association, is confident that, after last week’s attack, special help and attention will be given to on-duty officers, especially those who have suffered aggression, including psychological and physical violence. There has been a total of 730 early retirements by officers, through lack of aftercare, between 2012 and 2018. According to Merideño, if the stress and anxiety from specific incidents and cases is not addressed, there is cause for concern, and officers could suffer with post-traumatic stress and depression.

Concrete evidence! Teenager suffers decompression A TEENAGE girl was left in a critical condition, following a diving accident last Friday afternoon in Abades.

A HUGE cement lorry went over on its side in San Miguel, spilling its load on the TF-652 and leaving the driver injured.

The emergency services were notified at around 9.15am, and the operator dispatched an ambulance as well as the fire fighters, mainly to make the lorry safe, and to control the spillage. The driver, who sustained moderate injuries, was taken to Hospiten Sur for treatment and observation, while Guardia Civil officers controlled the traffic direction to maintain its flow.

A caller told the Canarian emergency services that the 19-year-old needed help, urgently, and a speciallyequipped ambulance was dispatched to the area. On arrival, medics examined the youngster, and it was soon apparent that she was suffering from injuries caused by decompression sickness. She appeared to be in considerable danger, so she was taken to La Laguna’s University Hospital. It houses Tenerife’s sole hyperbaric chamber, which is a well-established treatment for decompression sickness, enabling the victim to breath pure oxygen.

Restaurant novices off the dole queue!

31st May 2019 - 6th June 2019

A 15-STRONG group of students have received their professional certifications in basic bar and restaurant operations, having completed a course in the Adeje CDTCA (Costa Adeje centre for tourism development).

This is an experimental, employment programme, co-financed by the Canarian Employment Service and Adeje Council, designed to improve the employment possibilities for those taking part. On Monday (3rd June), the students will begin practical training in various hotels in Costa Adeje, Arona and Santiago del Teide. Joining the graduates were a number of students who received certification in food preparation, through the professional training programme, the FPE 2018. The project is a continuation

of the department’s aim for local development, to assist those who are having difficulty finding work and/or are at risk of social exclusion. Courses have been designed with learning tools, specifically designed to help these people find employment opportunities, in

a demanding labour market. The programme is run with INFOREST, and has benefited 60 people, who have been long-term unemployed, 15 of whom graduated with their certificates this week. The other 45 are still in training for their incorporation into the working world. It has

been shown that having a professional certificate is often a determining factor in finding work, especially among those who may not have any other qualifications. INFOREST has evolved into a platform for introduction into the labour market, or

professional advancement. The service, which offers personal assessments, now plays an important role in Adeje’s job-seeking centre, identifying job opportunities through company request, and producing active searches in the relevant sectors.

THE Guardia Civil have been investigating three individuals, aged between 37 and 53, in Lanzarote’s San Bartolome area for more than two weeks.

The probe began when officers stumbled across an Arrecife garage, full of marijuana plants, even though they had been investigating a series of thefts at the time. They were checking over employees from a

refurbishment company, after officials had reported that certain tools were disappearing. But once the agents obtained authorisation to enter the garage, they came across more than they bargained for, because they found approximately 27kg of marijuana, along with evidence of a flourishing plantation. They promptly obtained a search warrant to carry out a thorough search of the entire premises, discovering numerous items, necessary for cultivating the plants. These included special lamps, extractors and electrical supplies, as well as a sophisticated, irrigation network. The officers also found some 1,500 cannabis seeds, a home-made press, weighing scales and 432 fully-grown plants, as well as 60kg of marijuana, ready for consumption, in addition to a kilo of hashish, a kilo of pollen

and hundreds of bottles, filled with cannabis oil. Officers were soon aware that the premises were headquarters for a marihuana association, after finding a pile of documents from various people. In fact, the premises housed a well-organised business, with several types of rooms, catering for various stages

of the cultivating process. The investigation came to an end when all three people were detained and charged with drug-dealing, as well as cultivating toxic and psychotropic substances, capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behaviour. The trio are now in custody, awaiting a court appearance.

Guardia officers stumble on marijuana plantation Bus crashes, outside hospital!

A TITSA bus, covering the Santa Cruz to La Laguna route, was involved in an accident last Monday evening, right outside the Tenerife capital’s San Juan de Dios hospital. Passengers were assessed by ambulance medics from

the Canarian emergency services, and several people had minor injuries. But one man, hurt badly, was taken to another hospital nearby for treatment. The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed.

New €100 and €200 notes are much harder to forge

Eye-opener as Guardia arrest a drug-trafficker NEIGHBOURS in Guargacho watched in astonishment as a man was captured last Friday afternoon.

Onlookers witnessed how several Guardia Civil officers, including undercover men and reinforcements, sent

over from mainland Spain, captured then restrained the man. They then placed him into an unmarked van and an officer drove him away. The man, wanted in the United States, was accused of drug-trafficking, and he had been a target for the Drug Enforcement Administration for some time.

NEW €100 and €200 notes are now circulating throughout Spain, including the Canaries, along with the 19 other countries adopting the currency. This freshly-minted legal tender is the latest in the “Europa” series, following the €5, €10, €20 and €50 notes.

Unlucky seven hurt, as car runs into tram

SEVEN people were injured during an accident involving a tram and a car in Santa Cruz on Tuesday.

The crash happened on Avenida Islas Canarias in the area of Cruz del Señor at 12.15pm, when, say witnesses, a car collided with the tram. The Canarian emergency services were alerted and sent a couple of ambulances to the area, because the caller made the operator aware that several people needed assistance.

Medics in the ambulances began to access all the injured people: three from the car, the other four on the tram. The accident caused disruption with the tramline, leaving a couple of stops inoperative for a little while until the car could be removed. Fire-fighters from Santa Cruz had already been sent to the scene to assist with the vehicle’s removal. Fortunately, there were no serious casualties, though all seven were taken to a nearby health centre to be treated for minor injuries, and for observation.

The updated currency, issued by the European Central Bank (ECB), is vegan friendly, reduced in height to suit wallets, and is harder to forge. The €200 is now the largest denomination, the ECB having called a halt to printing €500 notes. Security is at the forefront of the new notes, designed by Germany’s Reinhold Gerstetter. A so-called “satellite”

hologram, with a silver band running through it, and a watermark of the goddess Europa, both feature on the notes. When turning the item in light, the hologram displays an oscillating euro symbol for extra security. A special print within the main illustration, and a small emerald insignia, which shines when hit by light, complete the new security measures.

NEWS IN BRIEF Their number’s up now!

SEVEN major companies are facing heavy fines because of their misuse of premium-rate numbers, which begin with the 902 prefix. These numbers are usually set for information-and-customerservice purposes only, but communications and competition regulator CNMC have found that these specific companies are offering the 902 numbers to firms for lucrative gains. These figures, which are often set outside the normal network bundles, include call packages in Spain. Thus, they can cost a lot more than regular numbers to contact. The companies have two months to appeal the decision before the Spanish Conscientious Courts.

Fake-marriage gang held

NATIONAL Police have arrested 17 people, connected to a scheme which arranged 186 false domestic partnerships, and marriages of convenience, between Spanish and South American citizens in Malaga. The people involved charged €2,000 to process the paperwork for South American citizens to obtain Spanish residence cards. Police have investigated people, who, they claim, to be the administrators and the manager. The manager, a 62-year-old Spanish man, who passed himself off as a lawyer, has been arrested for alleged document forgery and crimes against Spain’s welfare system. The group created a fictional company to forge documents such as employment contracts, say police.

Tragic death of a happy sun-bather

A MAN aged 50, who was enjoying the sun, sand and sea in Fuerteventura, died, tragically, of a heart attack on Monday afternoon, in the Los Corralejos municipality.

Emergency services were called, requesting an ambulance at around 4pm, and the caller told the operator he had just pulled a man from the water, who

had, apparently, suffered a heart attack. When the ambulance crew arrived, the man was already receiving CPR, and medics took over, hoping to resuscitate him. But despite using basic CPR, as well as advanced techniques, they were unable to save him, and could only confirm his death. Local Police, along with Guardia Civil agents, were also at the scene to assist, but, sadly, to no avail. Another coastal incident happened on Monday

in Gran Canaria, just before 6pm. The Canarian emergency services received a call, claiming that a man was in serious danger, after a near-death experience from drowning. The ambulance was dispatched to El Puertillo, in Arucas, and medics attended to the 56-year-old. But so serious were his symptoms that he was taken to the Doctor Negrín University hospital, in the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas, for further treatment.

Drunken Jet2 passengers may face enormous fines Guardia agents waited to tackle drunken British holiday-makers

IN a series of tweets from the Office of the Defensor del Pueblo, acting Ombudsman Francisco Fernández Marugán has called for a review on the legality of advertising gambling in Spain. He considers that, because the market has expanded dramatically in the past few years, gross income rising to nearly €700 million in 2018, advertising is “dangerous”, and is not being policed properly. Suggestions include a complete ban on advertising, except for the State lotteries and ONCE, a charity for the blind. Failing that, a ban should be imposed on TV advertising during children’s programmes, as well as the prohibition of celebrities plugging gambling in any form of advert. In addition, Fernández Marugán recommends that studies should be made about those who could be addicted to gambling, offering assistance and advice to those involved.

GUARDIA Civil officers hauled 14 “drunken” Brits off a Jet2 flight, which touched down at Mallorca’s Palma Airport after travelling from Edinburgh. The incident occurred on Monday at around 10am, with reports that there were about a dozen police cars engaged in the “spectacular operation”. No arrests were made, but

the men were processed by officers, preparing a report for the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA). These passengers were, apparently, walking in the isles when the seat-belt signs were on, and refused to take any notice of the cabin staff. But reality could soon strike because they could now face fines of up to €585,000 for a “very serious” breach of safety laws. A police spokesperson

said: “The tourists were not arrested, but they have been identified, and have been reported to the Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency.” A source added that the “drunken holiday-makers needed to be removed so the situation didn’t get any worse”. In fact, a member of the Jet2 staff decided to call the police to deal with, what its spokesperson called, “disorderly passengers”.

Froome hits peak with birthday dash up Teide

Young men unable to avoid policemen

TWO young men, aged 24 and 20, were detained and charged by the National Police on Sunday night, after they had avoided a Santa Cruz control point.

CHRIS Froome, four-time Tour de France winner, claimed the Mount Teide King of the Mountain (KOM) title on an impressive ride during his Tenerife training camp.

It was an extra 34th birthday present for Froome (Team Ineos), pictured third from left, who shared his 160km “morning ride” with teammates Michał Kwiatkowksi and Dylan van Baarle. He completed the ride in a time of 5hrs 42 mins 06secs, at an average speed of 28km/h and a total elevation of nearly 4,000 metres. The data of the steepest part of Froome’s ascent, which is 6.27km in length, with an average 6% gradient, shows he completed it in 16 minutes flat, at an average pace of 23.5km/h. The previous best time on

the climb belonged to Adrián Trujillo, who posted a time of 16-09, with Froome’s team-mate, Pavel Sivakov, holding the third best time of 16-15. Other pros in the top 10 include Michael Valgren (Dimension Data), who posted a time of 17-27 up the climb, as well as Robert Gesink (Jumbo-Visma) at 18-11. Froome’s great effort was part of his preparation for a tilt at a fifth Tour de France title, which would equal the record, held jointly by Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain. He will line up alongside reigning champion and team-mate Geraint Thomas, the modest Welshman saying earlier in the year: “As long as one of us wins, that’s the goal.”

The driver must have spotted it, and several officers in the area, and sped away, suspiciously. In fact, policemen had to move out of the way, swiftly, for fear of being hit. But two officers quickly pursued the vehicle in their patrol car, and, while doing so, they saw one of the occupants throwing something out of the window. The officers soon intercepted their car in the area of Vuelta los Pajaros, and, while they questioned the individuals, other policemen searched the area in which the objects would have landed. They discovered several small packages of a hard, brown substance, which proved to be hashish, and, in total, five small packets were found, weighing a total of 495gms. While they were being identified, the 24-year-old man was found to be on the police data base, for drugdealing offences. Officers also found 100 euros in their possession, comprising small notes, assumed to be the cash made from the men’s drug sales. They also discovered two wraps of a white substance, looking very much like cocaine.

Migrant trio squeezed into Spain-bound car THREE African migrants, including a 15-year-old girl, squeezed inside compartments under car dashboards and behind seats at a border crossing, from Morocco to Spain.

Guardia Civil officers discovered the girl and two men, aged 20 and 21, last Friday, when they searched three cars at the border between Morocco and the Spanish territory of Melilla, said a Guardia Civil spokesman. Two migrants were found crammed inside tiny spaces, installed under car dashboards, while a third was hidden in a compartment behind the rear seat of one vehicle. Two of the migrants required medical attention because they showed “symptoms of asphyxia, disorientation and generalised pain in the joints, due to the horrible way in which they were travelling”, said a statement. Police arrested the three

drivers, all Moroccan men, aged 19-31, on suspicion of people-smuggling. Border police also found a 20-year-old migrant the same day, hanging from the undercarriage of a truck at the border crossing. Spain’s two North African enclaves, Melilla and Ceuta, have the European Union’s only land borders with Africa. They are often used as entry points into Europe for African migrants, who usually climb over border fences, or try to swim along the coast. Recently, 52 African migrants

forced their way into Melilla from Morocco by climbing over a towering border fence, admitted Spanish authorities. Around 100 migrants tried to storm the barbed-wire fence at dawn, but the Spanish and Moroccan security forces prevented “around half” from entering Melilla, said Spain’s Interior Ministry in a statement. One migrant was taken to a medical centre for treatment to cuts he suffered scaling the fence, while four Spanish police officers sustained

bruises. And police arrested one of the migrants for assaulting an officer. The 52 who were able to enter Melilla were taken to a temporary migrant accommodation centre, where they were given new clothes. It was the biggest assault on the Melilla-Morocco border since October 2018, when some 300 migrants stormed the fence. About 200 migrants managed to get into Melilla that time, but one died of a suspected heart attack in the attempt.

Driver injures head in motorway smash

A MAN suffered head injuries, after being involved in a collision with a truck and a van on the TF-5. The accident happened on Tuesday at 1.15pm, on the north-bound motorway in San Crisobal, in the La Laguna municipality. The 57-year-old man was driving north when he banged his head as the vehicles crashed. An ambulance was sent to the scene and stabilised the man, before taking him to the University hospital for further treatment and observation. Guardia Civil trafico officers were at the scene to assist with traffic circulation, while workers from the local council’s road maintenance department cleaned up the road.

Two held after theft of a €100,000 watch

TWO Romanians were arrested in the Alicante town of Benissa, after robbing a Dutch pensioner of his €100,000 watch, using the “hugger-mugger” method. The pair, a 19-year-old girl and a 27-year-old man, robbed their victim in nearby Calpe, the youngster, reportedly, stroking the Dutchman’s arm affectionately, while lifting his watch and doing a runner. They were caught two days later in Benissa, attempting the same trick, but this time without success.

European elections give Sanchez a mighty boost, and Farage races ahead

THE European Parliamentary elections last Sunday produced an emphatic victory for the left-leaning PSOE in Spain, while UK results saw Nigel Farage’s Brexit party become joint-largest in the EU parliament.

The socialists took 1.5 million votes in Andalucia on the way to winning 20 seats and making gains in towns, cities and regions, with 32.8% of the vote nationwide. Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s party, with six more MEPs, pushed the conservative PP Party into second place on 12 seats, but the centrist Ciudadanos picked up a seat to reach seven MEPs, while the leftist Unidos Podemos lost five seats and is left with 11. A triumphant Sanchez said:

“We are going to be the biggest social-democrat delegation in the European Parliament, and that’s a source of pride for us. It’s an opportunity, but also an enormous responsibility.” It came as the PSOE also scored a big victory in local and regional elections, strengthening Sanchez’s hand as he seeks to form a new government. The European results saw euro-sceptic parties gain ground, and far-right Vox MEPs, which won three seats, entered the EU parliament for the first time. Meanwhile, turn-out was high in the UK, where voting saw a desperate collapse in support for both Labour and the Conservatives. Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party captured 31.6% of the vote and will now sit with Germany’s CDU as the jointlargest party, with 29 MEPs. Farage said: “With a big,

Mugger who tried to mug the police is sent to court

simple message, which is that we’ve been badly let down by two parties who have broken their promises, we have topped the poll in a fairly dramatic style.” The pro-Remain Liberal Democrats achieved a solid, second-place finish with 20%, after gaining an extra 15 seats to add to their solitary one, as like-minded parties enjoyed an electoral boost. Lib Dem Deputy leader Jo Swinson said: “The results give hope to all the people out there who want to stop Brexit, and supporters should not be giving up without a fight.” The Conservative party, meanwhile, suffered its “worst-ever result”, landing in fifth place with just 10% of the vote and four MEPs only, after polls and pundits predicted that Prime Minister Theresa May’s Tory party, and Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, would lose votes because of Brexit. “We voted to leave and we

haven’t left,” said Conservative Brexiteer and MEP for the South-East, Daniel Hannan. “It’s that simple.” Voters also punished Labour for their Brexit muddling, with Jeremy Corbyn’s party finishing in third place overall, with less than 15% of the vote. Keir Starmer, Labour’s Shadow Brexit secretary, said: “The only way to break the Brexit impasse is to go back to the public, with a choice between a credible leave option and remain.” But the Green Party, which won four more seats than in the 2014 European Parliament election, now has a total of seven MEPs, overtaking the Conservatives. There has been a real change of political power in the Canaries after 26 years, with the ruling Coalición Canarias succumbing in the regional elections to the Socialists’ PSOE, which

recently won the General Election in Spain, despite an unsatisfactory majority. The PSOE, led by Sanchez, will need to form pacts with other parties such as Podemos. But the CC is also in the race, trying to make pacts with other parties such as the PP and Ciudadanos, to form a Government. But the Socialists will surely win. As for Tenerife Councils, the Socialist strongholds of South and West Tenerife (Arona, Adeje and Guía de Isora), all came good again, with Mayors José Julián Mena Pérez (Arona) Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga (Adeje) and Pedro Martín Domínguez (Guía de Isora) all re-elected. But the PP held on to Santiago del Teide, and the CC retained Santa Cruz, without an absolute majority for Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, who will also need to form pacts to govern.

hoods and balaclavas. He explained in his written report that he was physically threatened with a blade while being ordered to hand over all his belongings, which, apparently, was 162 euros, a mobile smartphone, worth 900 euros, and a credit-card machine, The National Police began to investigate the attack, with the help of Local Police, but the report presented didn’t add up because there were many contradictions. It also came to their attention that the individual had a colourful police record. And it wasn’t long before

they discovered that the individual hadn’t thought his story through, because he was still using the mobile phone which had been “stolen”. That was enough for him to be detained for further questioning, and, eventually, officers arrested man, who will appear before the judicial authorities. National Police make it clear that reporting any non-existing offences, or making false accusations, is a punishable offence, which carries anything from a hefty fine to a prison sentence of between six and 12 months.

Free Morgan Foundation is wasting its time, again! FOLLOWING a hearing of the Dutch Council of State, which has just taken place in The Hague, Loro Parque is confident that the Dutch judiciary will resolve this appeal by again agreeing with its Government in the case of the orca Morgan.

This result has been made on all previous occasions, and will be the 10th resolution on the same theme in the Dutch administration and justice system. The pronouncement

of other institutions, such as the European Parliament, has always supported the action of the Dutch and Spanish authorities, relating to the rescue of this orca, which, had it not been for Loro Parque, would have had to be euthanised. In short, the Free Morgan Foundation has never had a judicial resolution in its favour in the last 10 years, though it continues with its strategy of trying to force court cases which seem to seek public visibility. The position of the Free Morgan Foundation is absurd, maintaining an unfounded litigation almost a decade after Morgan appeared,

practically dead, off the Dutch coast. Since then, it has been proven that Morgan is deaf, which makes it completely impossible for her to return to the wild. And, in addition, she has been perfectly integrated into Loro Parque’s orca group, to the point of having been the mother of a calf, Ula. With this lawsuit, the Free Morgan Foundation wanted the Dutch authorities to annul Morgan’s CITES permit, arguing that Loro Parque did not carry out scientific research. That assumption is totally ridiculous, in light of the scientific articles published in recent years on bioacoustics, personality in orcas and immunotoxicology or audiometry, based on studies carried out with Loro Parque’s orcas. In addition to these publications, many other researches have been carried out and published as communications for scientific congresses and end-ofdegree theses. The only thing certain in

this case is that Morgan was fortunate enough to be rescued, and escaped certain death. Hundreds of thousands of cetaceans each year are unlucky because they end up dying, trapped in fishing nets,

with their stomachs full of plastic waste, or their blood contaminated by toxic substances. Fortunately, Morgan has been able to survive, and, with her daughter Ula, is now happy in Loro Parque.

Near-drowning man saved

A MAN who nearly drowned, at a Candelaria beach, was taken to hospital for treatment last Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at the small bathing beach, adjacent to Avenida de Maritima de las Caletilla, where the 60-year-old man had, initially, been rescued by a lifeguard, just moments before he called the emergency services at 3.45pm. An ambulance went to the scene, and it was clear to medics that the man needed further medical assistance, so they took him to Candelaria Hospital, where he received treatment, immediately.

Half-a-million dodgy water wells in Spain

Julen’s disappearance down a borehole in January

OFFICIALS are warning that there are around 500,000 poorly-constructed water wells across Spain. And, said the Higher Council of Colleges of Mining Engineers, many of these sites are illegal and in poor condition, posing a risk because of bad management. The group also warned that a lack of personnel made applying for legal permits for

Spain’s antiissue a doo 31st May 2019 - 6th June 2019

these boreholes “long and arduous”. It added: “It is necessary to correct and eliminate the serious threat that the abandoned holes pose, because Seprona [the Guardia Civil’s environmental arm] is currently monitoring very effectively. And the work is very urgent”. In January, the issue of water-prospecting boreholes opened up a debate, after two-year-old Julen fell and died at the bottom of a 71-metre well in Totalan.

SUMMER is approaching, and Spain’s city dwellers love nothing more than to get away from the heat and dust of urban life, opting for the coast or the Pyrenees, where the air is clean and fresh.

Or is it? An ominous new study suggests that no matter where you go to get away from it all, the air is thick with the microscopic particles of an allpervasive material, woven into the structure of our modern economy: single-use plastic. And now, its poison has spread to one of Europe’s wildest, natural landscapes. Measuring under 5mm long, micro-plastic is swirling like shoals of deadly nano fish in the Mediterranean, and has also reached a remote, “pristine wilderness” in the Pyrenees. More shocking still, is that it’s

being found in the kind of volumes you might expect to find in Paris or China’s most industrial zones. That’s according to a study carried out by Steve Allen, a researcher in micro-plastics at Strathclyde University, and his partner, EcoLab scientist Deonie Allen. The density of the micro-plastic particles in a cross-border area was measured in the French meteorological station of Bernadouze, 1,425 metres above sea level, over a fivemonth span between 2017 and 2018. The result was a daily average of 365 particles per square metre. According to the study, most were invisible to the naked eye and could have been transported from up to 95km away. “It opens up the possibility that it’s not only in the cities you are breathing this in, but it can travel quite some distance from the sources,” Allen wrote

in a paper published in the Nature Geoscience journal. “Plastic litter is an increasing global issue, and one of the key environmental challenges we face on global scale.” As the nearest hamlet is 25km away from the research area, it is not known whether the particles came from Toulouse, or from Barcelona or Zaragoza. According to Alba García, who runs Greenpeace Spain’s Plastics Campaign, the particles could even have been transported by storms from the marine environment. Spain is the main culprit, after Turkey, for the quantity of plastic in the Mediterranean: a scandalous 126 tonnes daily, according to an Orb Media study earlier this year. This chemically-charged debris, eaten by fish, acts as a magnet for other chemicals in the water, making them ever more toxic. Spain is also the fourth-biggest

consumer of plastic in Europe, possibly through tourism, because visitors are more likely to take a holiday from responsible consumption and splurge on single-use plastic items, 70% of which are never recycled. But one of the main problems is the lack of ready, cheap alternatives to the imperishable material, now part of the air we breathe and the water we drink. The Orb Media study even found that 92% of bottled water, and 83% of tap water, is contaminated by microplastic particles. “People throwing away plastics is part of the problem,” said Alba. “But the main cause is the density of these materials everywhere. If you go to a supermarket, it’s impossible to get out of there without plastic.” Despite the growing unease among consumers over the choices available to them,

the plastics industry continues to boom. Production of thermoplastic used in water bottles rose 4.7% year on year between 1990 and 2017, and it is predicted to rise by a further 40% in the next 10 years. Though EU legislation, by 2021, will have banned singleuse plastic products such as cutlery, straws, balloon sticks, cotton buds, polystyrene packaging and cups, there is still no legislation to curb the volume of plastic used by companies. “Some countries were more flexible, and others, like Italy, less so,” said Alba, referring to the environmental lobby’s efforts to nail an ambitious deal. “Italy was very opposed, because they have a big plastics industry. Spain was a little bit more pro-sustainability, even though we also have a plastics industry here.” Plastic has been around for nearly a century, and, as man-

ufacturers’ association Plastics Europe points out, it is “the ultimate versatile material, making possible numerous technological innovations, new design solutions, environmental enhancements and costsavings”. But surely scientists can come up with something less contaminating to take their place? “Compostable materials or bio-plastics are alternatives, still based on the throw-away culture,” said Alba. “These are up to five times more expensive than normal plastic, but they don’t get to the root of the problem because they still have plastic in them. “That is why Greenpeace is so persistent about re-usable products.” Eva González, director of Ecodes, a nonprofit organisation for sustainable and eco-friendly development, agrees, saying: “We believe that getting away from the throw-away culture

is fundamental for the wellbeing of our planet, and for meeting the UN Sustainable Development Objectives. “When it comes to bioplastics, it is true that some have plastic in them and some are not biodegradable. The ones that are will only do so under certain conditions, such as the temperature of the soil or environment they are deposited in. If those conditions are not met, they don’t biodegrade.” The only viable option appears to be to transform the industries based on single-use plastic into reusable industries. But the window of opportunity is still open. As 16-yearold Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, fiesty founder of the global Fridays for Future movement, told UK MPs in the Houses of Parliament in April: “Humans are very adaptable. We can still fix this. But the opportunity to do so will not last for long.”

Parents’ Game of Names takes after the TV series NEARLY 22,000 Spaniards have the same names as characters in the popular Game of Thrones, the US TV drama series, with Mari Carmen for females and Antonio for men the most popular, while Lucía and Lucas are No.1 for new babies.

The latest report by Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) has just revealed that 656,276 women, as at 1st January 2018, which is the most recent date for available figures, were called Mari Carmen, or its Maricármen variation, while 678,425 men were named Antonio. But another generation or two could change that because new baby names in 2017, recorded on the annual census for last year, showed 4,410 named Lucías and 4,209 christened Lucas. After Maricármen, a contraction of María del Carmen, Spain’s most common female name was María, followed by ‘Carmen’. The average age of a

Carmen, without the Mari before it, was 60.4 years, as at 1st January, 2018, while the average for Maricármen or Mari Carmen was 57. In the case of María, the average age was 48½, which was only slightly older than

the average age of a Spanish adult, 43, showing that the likely age range for the name could well start in earliest childhood and continue into the really elderly. After Antonio, whose average age on the census date taken

was just under 56, the most common name was José, just over 61, and Manuel, just under 55. The latter two account for 594,144 and 590,965 Spanish men or boys respectively, to be followed by Francisco, at just below half a million; David, at slightly over 365,000; Juan, at around 347,000; José Antonio, at 310,000; Javier, at 306,500; Daniel, just short of 297,300 and, concluding the top 10, José Luis at 294,000. Spaniards have two surnames, that of the father, followed by that of the mother, although they can now, legally, invert these, and women do not change their surname to that of their husband when they marry. García is the most common as a first or second surname, with nearly 1.47 million in the family nationally, followed by Rodríguez and González, both at exactly 925,137. is one of the surnames of 914,028 Spanish people, followed by López (869,461), Martínez (832,270), Sánchez (816,476), Pérez (777,361), Gómez (491,138) and Martín (487,881). As for new babies, the name Lucas has knocked Hugo off the top spot for the first time since 2013, but Lucía

has been in the lead since 2002. After Lucas and the 4,141 babies at 1st January last year named Hugo, the thirdmost-common boy’s name for a newborn was Martín, at 3,838. Lucía is only slightly ahead of Sofía, at 4,206, and María shows no signs of going out of fashion, being the chosen name for 3,874 baby girls born in 2017. Kit Harrington’s character in Game of Thrones, Jon, was a popular name in Spain anyway, especially in the Basque Country, and its 20,574 bearers’ average age is 24 years and four months. But for girls, the parents of the 457 named Arya were clearly fans of the show, given that their average age is two… slightly younger than the 86 Spanish girls called Daenerys, who are, typically, aged two years and four months. Parents of the 180 boys called Sándor, the 69 called Bran and the 59 called Gregor, are unlikely to have all taken their sons’ names from Game of Thrones, even though these are three of the main characters, given that their average ages are 42.2 years, 12-and-three-quarters, and 34-and-a-half, respectively.

£100,000 reward for info on Goldfinger murderer DETECTIVES in Britain have offered a £100,000 reward for fresh information regarding the suspected contract killing of John “Goldfinger” Palmer, the 65-yearold once described as Britain’s richest criminal. He earned his nickname after allegedly smelting gold from the 1983 £26m BrinksMat bullion heist at Heathrow. Palmer was shot dead in the grounds of his South Weald, Essex, mansion in June 2015,

a month after being charged with timeshare fraud, moneylaundering and firearms offences in Tenerife. Initially, police attributed Palmer’s death to natural causes after failing to notice that he had been shot five times. They believed the wounds stemmed from his recent gall-bladder surgery. Following a Madrid trial, earlier this year, in which several of Palmer’s business associates were found guilty of selling spurious timeshares and package holidays, police hoped for a change of heart and loyalties among career criminals. “There is always nervousness within the underworld when

a trial looms,” said Detective Superintendent Stephen Jennings, who heads the investigation. “Now that it is over, people might feel they can talk to us. The key to solving Palmer’s murder lies within the criminal underworld.” The Superintendent also revealed that no evidence supported speculation that Palmer was a key player in the Hatton Garden jewel robbery, two months before his death. DS Jennings added: “There was no proof, either, that Palmer was planning a deal with Spain’s Prosecution Department, in a bid to have the fraud charges against him dropped.”

Ex-King Carlos stands down from public life

Love-rival schoolboy is stabbed in the back A SCHOOLBOY, aged 15, has been arrested in Spain after his classroom “love rival” was stabbed in the back. Police were called to the Marbella school, and the wounded youngster was rushed off to hospital, where he required stitches. The disagreement between the two students had

spanned several days, and was over a girl, according to their friends. A small knife was found in a yard near the bathroom where the incident took place. Fortunately, the blade missed the victim’s vital organs, and he has been discharged from hospital.

Italian’s dislocated shoulder

Former Spanish King Juan Carlos (centre, right) to retire

JUAN CARLOS, Spain’s King Emeritus, will retire from public life on Sunday (2nd June), four years after abdicating, which allowed Spain’s current King Felipe to succeed him. Juan Carlos, who came to power in 1975, after the death of former dictator Francisco Franco, was installed as Spain’s head of

state, overseeing its transition to democracy, which was completed in 1978, with the adoption of the country’s Constitution. The former monarch appeared on Spanish television in 1981 to denounce an attempted coup by Guardia Civil officers, and he called on Spanish citizens to back their democratic government. Juan Carlos then took a step back from the business of government, adopting a more ceremonial role,

similar to a British monarch. He courted controversy later in his reign, initially with an outburst directed at former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez, during an Ibero-American Summit in 2007. He also faced stern criticism, when it emerged that he had injured himself on an elephant-hunting trip in Botswana in 2012. Juan Carlos announced his abdication in June 2014, and has since taken part in public engagements.

AN Italian man, aged 27, dislocated a shoulder after falling in a precarious area at Adeje’s La Caleta Beach last Sunday.

The emergency services’ operator, who was told that he was unable to move, sent an ambulance and firefighters to help him. Local

Police were already at the beach, waiting to assist. Upon arrival, the fire-fighters calmed the man down, and he was then taken to the ambulance to be assessed by medics. The man’s dislocated shoulder was causing him considerable discomfort, but he was transported to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.

Fatal fall of a woman cleaning her windows

Drink-drive convictions up by 10% in one year CONVICTIONS for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs have risen 10% in just one year. According to figures from Spain’s Attorney General’s Office, there were 56,173 convictions for the offences in 2018, compared with 51,085 in 2017. This represented 21% of all convictions for any kind of crime. And, highlighting the danger of the offence, is that more than 40% of drivers who died in traffic accidents on Spanish roads had consumed alcohol or drugs. Pere Navarro, head of the DGT national traffic authority, is now planning to bring in more roadside

checks, rather than introduce stricter penalties. He told Spanish newspaper El Pais: “It’s not clear to me that the solution lies in higher penalties. At some point we might have to do it, but we don’t support it.” The number of roadside checks carried out has declined, markedly, after deep cuts in public spending. In 2013, the Guardia Civil tested 6.4m drivers for alcohol. By 2017, this number had fallen to 5.18m. Last year, 89,264 people were convicted of all driving offences, which was an 8.9% rise over 2017. Road fatalities, on the other hand, fell to 1,180 last year, compared with 1,198 in 2017.

A WOMAN, aged 65, died after falling, accidentally, while cleaning her windows inside a fifth-floor apartment. The incident happened at 26-28 Calle Leon y Castillo, in Gran Canaria, on Wednesday morning. A witness, who saw the 65-year-old woman plummet to the ground, said everything happened so quickly, and she recalled neighbours shouting for help, while others tried to assist the woman. But it was obvious that the fall had killed her. She was covered over with a sheet, respectfully, by a neighbour, until the authorities arrived. Shortly afterwards, two ambulances arrived, accompanied by Local

Police officers, who alerted a forensic team to enable the body to be removed. Another witness, who also saw the fall, was treated by the ambulance doctor because she was having a panic attack. He managed to stabilise her before she was taken to the University Hospital of Doctor Negrín for further observation. Local police have opened an investigation to clarify the cause of death, although, according to witnesses and neighbours. it was a tragic accident. Large traffic jams built up rapidly, so Local Police officers began diverting the traffic. They also cordoned off the road, in order to begin their investigation.

Drones may even lift prisoners to freedom

GUARDIA Civil officials believe that a drone could be employed for prison escapes, following an incident last September. The Interior Ministry ordered an inquiry after an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dropped drugs and a mobile phone into Malaga’s Alhaurin de la Torre prison, last September. Some drones can carry up to 100kg and the authorities are said to believe a prisoner could be airlifted to freedom in this manner. Air-traffic regulations ban drones from entering protected airspace, including prisons, and Alhaurin staff told investigators that a drone flew over the complex the previous day,

but they did not see a package being dropped. Yet Guardia officers found a crashed drone in an avocado plantation adjoining the prison, although the Ministry stressed that there was no evidence linking the drone to the drugs or mobile. However, the incident was not isolated. Prison staff reported in January 2017 that a drone had flown over Teixiero (La Coruña) prison. Another drone was spotted in January when a drone flew over La Moraleja prison in Dueñas (Palencia), while prisoners were outside. An immediate search confirmed that nothing had been dropped. But although the Guardia Civil combed the area outside the prison, they failed to locate the drone’s pilot.

Business

By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

AMIDST today’s climate of global uncertainty and prolonged low interest rates, careful planning is particularly important to secure long-term financial security. These six key tips can help.

1. Establish a suitable strategy Crucially, your portfolio should be created and managed to meet your particular circumstances and goals, including your risk tolerance and income requirements. Make sure your investments are tailored for your life in Spain, rather than for a UK resident. With an ill-fitting investment portfolio, you could find your money is not working as hard as it should, is difficult to access, or becomes eroded

Six tips for protecting & growing your savings

by inflation. 2. Understand your risk appetite Before investing, you need to pinpoint the right balance of risk/return for your peace of mind. It is difficult to assess your own tolerance for risk, so speak with an experienced adviser who can ask the right questions, and use appropriate tools to create an objective risk profile for you. He or she can then recommend an appropriate blend of investments, to match your requirements. 3. Identify your timeline for investing Generally, the longer you have to invest, the more risk you can afford to take. With time, you can ride out market volatility, and benefit from compound returns. Understanding your time horizon is also useful to establish the right level of “liquidity”. Your plans may change unexpectedly in future, so make sure you hold

some liquid assets that can be easily sold, if you need to access your capital, or change strategy. 4. Insist on diversification The higher your concentration in one particular investment type or area, including the UK, the greater the risk. By diversifying across asset classes, geographic region and market sectors, you limit your exposure to any one area. You can take diversification further with an adviser who uses a “multi-manager” approach, to spread your investments out among several fund managers. This can reduce your reliance on any one manager making the right decisions, in all market conditions. 5. Incorporate effective tax planning To help maximise your real returns, and protect your wealth for future generations, factor in tax planning when setting up your portfolio. Look for arrangements that

can shelter capital from tax, while providing a tax-efficient income, that enable you to transfer wealth to your beneficiaries, with minimal taxation. For expatriates, tax planning is complicated by having to work with the rules of more than one country. An adviser with cross-border expertise can ensure you meet your tax liabilities, in Spain and in the UK, while taking advantage of available opportunities. 6. Regularly review your strategy Good financial planning is not a “set-and-forget” exercise. Not only does everyone have their own unique set of circumstances, aims and requirements, these often change over time. External influences, such as changes in the law or tax rules, may also prompt a strategy rethink. You should review your financial planning, around once a year, to keep it on track, bringing it forward if

anything happens to affect the effectiveness or suitability of your portfolio. You can bring all these guidelines together by taking personalised, quality advice from a regulated adviser. Whether you are looking at investments, tax planning, estate planning or your pensions, it is crucial that your approach is appropriate for you. With the right strategy in place for your life in Spain, you can protect and grow your wealth, in real terms, not only during your lifetime, but for the next generations to enjoy. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Timeshare owners want to keep their properties!

IT’S not often, especially here in Tenerife, that timeshare owners want to hang on to their properties, given the past history of events on the island. But it is exactly what the 1,000-plus owners at the Club Los Claveles Timeshare Resort, in Los Cristianos, have been attempting to do, since January 2015. That’s when Ivan Pengelly, who died last year, sold his Canary Islands Resort Management Company to Onagrup, without warning the owners. Since then, a huge David & Goliath battle has been taking place between owners and management. Los Claveles club members, comprising over 83% of the community there, voted at the 2015 AGM to terminate the Wimpen Club Maintenance Contract, which ran out in May 2017. WimPen/Onagrup were given formal notice, but refused, steadfastly, to

abide by the democratic vote, constitution or statutes. What has occurred in the four years since is a series of hard-fought, legal victories in Scottish Arbitration, the Scottish Court of Session, then the Spanish Supreme Court in Gran Canaria, which approved the Arbitration Award in full, delegating the enforcement to the Arona Courts. But the Wimpen/Onagrup company refuses to hand over the club owners’ properties, as well as their database, funds and accounting records. To make matters worse for timeshare owners who have already paid the legal club administrator, they have been forced to pay a second maintenance fee in cash, on arrival at the complex, or are refused access. Last December, the Arona Court ordered WimPen to stop sending invoices, refusing owners access and demanding maintenance fees from club owners.

But WimPen/Onagrup has appealed the judgement, which, they perceive, as justification to carry on until the appeal is heard, which could take another six months, despite the Supreme Court accepting the Arbitration Award in full, with no right of appeal. Understandably, the owners are fed up with all these obstructive, delaying tactics by WimPen/ Onagrup, while their club funds are depleting, rapidly. The battle continues, after five legal court victories to date, which have amounted to nothing so far. Alex Lovett, a long-standing timeshare owner there, said: “It is an absurd situation, and it appears to be some kind of game to Wimpen/ Onegrup. “It is extremely costly for us to keep paying out legal fees, and double maintenance fees, but we know we will win in the end.” Another owner said: “They are waging a dirty battle against the rightful owners, but we will come through… it’s just a matter of time.”

The Planets

Tuesday 4th June, BBC2, 21.00

Early in the story of The Planets there was a beautiful water world, an oasis of hope in a sterile universe. But this was not Earth - this was the young Mars. Professor Brian Cox’s continues his tour of the solar system revealing that it was once home to not one, but two blue planets. Episode two: The Two Sisters - Earth And Mars. For millions of years Mars enjoyed oceans blanketed by oxygen-rich skies and a temperate climate, whilst at the same moment Earth was a far less favourable habitat. Back then our planet was toxic, cooling more slowly than Mars after the impact that created her companion, the Moon. And both planets were about to face another trial. As they reached the end of their adolescence, a solar system-wide cataclysmic event threatened to destroy both their chances of ever hosting life. Called the Late Heavy Bombardment, this event saw asteroids rain down on every inch of the planets for tens of millions of years, resurfacing vast areas of both worlds. But as the dust settled, Mars emerged reborn. Billions of tonnes of water had been delivered, returning it to a hospitable water-world once more, in places creating the greatest waterfalls the solar system has ever seen. But deep inside the molten metal in Mars’s core was rapidly cooling. In time it would fail and along with it the planet’s beautiful blue auroras would fade. It was a sign that Mars’s atmosphere was dying, leaving the planet open up to the ravages of the Sun. Mars is a failed world that long ago had the same potential as Earth, which begs a big question: did life get a start on both worlds? In search of the answer, plans are afoot to take humans to the red planet.

Autumn 2000. From his latest camp in Afghanistan, al-Qaeda strategist Ayman al-Zawahiri (Nasser Faris) despatches Mohamed Atta (Dhafer L’Abidine) to bring focus to the cells in America. Walla (Mohamad Ashraf) is also sent on a separate mission to Yemen. Embedded in the CIA’s Alec Station, FBI agent Vince Stuart (Louis Cancelmi) pesters Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt) for permission to share knowledge of a suspect Saudi citizen present in America. After consulting her demoted mentor Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard), Marsh takes a carrot-and-stick approach to ensuring Stuart’s silence. In New York, John O’Neill tries to mend fences with his by-the-book new chief, Jason Sanchez (Yul Vazquez), who instead orders him to a retirement preparation conference in Florida. O’Neill is distracted by a call from his NYCbound mistress Sheri and his briefcase - containing classified files - is stolen. Even though the case is recovered with the files intact, he questions if should he report its disappearance. He seeks the advice of his other mistress Liz (Annie Parisse), who is staying with him in the hotel. Walla arrives at the port of Aden in Yemen, met by Khallad (Samer Bisharat). The al-Qaeda cell there is watching a US warship in the bay, and Walla is about to take a boat trip...

“Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.” Inspired by this Jesuit motto, ITV’s landmark documentary Up series began in 1964, following a group of people drawn from startlingly different backgrounds who have allowed television cameras to drop into their lives at seven year intervals ever since. Led by director Michael Apted throughout the decades, this unique, acclaimed series has now reached 63 Up, allowing it to gain further illuminating insight into its original premise of asking whether or not our adult lives are pre-determined by our earliest influences and the social class in which we are raised - an issue as relevant to our society now as it was when the series first aired. Across three films, 63 Up reveals more life-changing decisions, more shocking announcements and joy and tears in equal measure. The original 7 Up was broadcast as a one-off World in Action Special inspired by the founder editor Tim Hewat’s passionate interest in the Jesuit saying and his anger at what he saw as the rigidity of social class in England. 7 Up featured the children talking about their hopes and dreams for the future. As members of the generation who would be running the country by the year 2000, what did they think they would become? The result was ground-breaking television and the follow-up films have won an array of awards. Director Michael Apted, who moved to Hollywood in the late 70s to direct films including Coal Miner’s Daughter, The World Is Not Enough, The Chronicles of Narnia and Gorillas in the Mist, has returned every seven years to chart the children’s progress through life. Over nearly six decades, the series has documented the group as they have become adults and entered middle-age, dealing with everything life has thrown at them in between. Now, as the group reach retirement age, the series is back to discover what they are doing

GRAND FINAL Friday 31st May

Showtime Tenerife Friday 31st may, doors open 8pm Showtime, Karting Las Americas

This unique race begins at sea level and ends 3500 metres above sea level. This makes it the highest race in Spain and the second highest in Europe. Several racing modes are on offer: Trail, Marathon, Half-Marathon, Challenge and, last but not least, Ultra – the most taxing race, with a course that goes beyond 100 kilometres. Ever since it was first held, the Tenerife Bluetrail has drawn about 10,000 racers a year. It is one of the most awaited trail running events on the calendar. As a prelude to the race, there will be a Sports Fair at the Santa Cruz International Trade Fair and Convention Centre, where participants will be able to get their number tags, buy gear at good prices and enjoy sports shows.

Banana boxes contained record weight of cocaine

Brit diver’s body found on seabed

Bananas were used to smuggle Sevilla’s record cocaine shipment

POLICE in Sevilla have seized 1,000kg of cocaine, hidden in boxes of bananas, to claim the city’s largest-ever shipment of the drug.

The boxes of fruit, used to smuggle the narcotics in a lorry, are now being kept at the police headquarters.

Three people have so far been arrested following the bust, the volume of which had only ever been seen previously, at sea. Udyco anti-drug officers from Sevilla, along with Malaga forces, were behind the record raid. The Specialist agents involved, co-ordinated with the Anti-drug Prosecutor’s Office of the Campo de Gibraltar.

Illegal Spanish waste delivered to Malaysia

THE body of British diver Phillip Evans has been found, 170ft underwater off the coast of Murcia. The 69-year-old became separated from his diving group in the Islas Hormigas marine reserve last Thursday.

His body was recovered after a two-day search, in which a Spanish coastguard vessel used a remote-operated vehicle to scour the seafloor. Francisco Jimenez, a regional government official, said: “We regret this tragic outcome.” A Murcia judge will investigate the circumstances which led to the diver’s death.

Evans, from Balmedie, in Aberdeenshire, was an experienced diver, who had been in the Armed Forces. A family statement on social media said: “We are devastated to let you all know Phillip went diving and didn’t come home. He died doing something he loved.” Phillip was a regular visitor to Murcia, using the Club

de Buceo Islas Hormigas many times over the last few years. And he praised them on social media as the “friendliest club in the area”. He was also a strong campaigner, fighting against marine plastic waste, throwing his weight behind efforts to ban single-use plastic cutlery and coffee cups, among other items.

Hidden coca leaves are spotted by flight police ONCE China closed the doors to the importation of waste material, it was diverted to other parts of Asia. But, recently, Malaysia caught out Spain by discovering the country had sent large volumes of illegal, plastic waste. Last year, according to environmental group Greenpeace, Spain was the eighth-largest exporter of

waste to Malaysia. And, the group revealed, much of this was sent by clandestine methods, the containers’ content not being described properly. Malaysian Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin said that no fewer than 24 containers, full of non-recyclable plastic waste, had been seized in Selangor State. And, as they had been imported in breach of a United Nations Treaty, all will, eventually, be returned to Spain.

A STANDARD check on luggage and passengers coming off a Madrid flight led to the seizure of more than three kilos of coca leaves, wrapped in plastic. Guardia Civil found them hidden in the suitcase of a passenger, who told officers he had nothing to declare. But he confirmed that he was carrying coca leaves in the packets. Officers told him the leaves contain alkaloids, which, through a chemical process, can be used to obtain cocaine

hydrochloride, a powerful stimulant of the central

nervous system, the use of which is banned.

Dialysis firm bribed doctors with fortune A GERMAN dialysis company has admitted to paying millions of euros in bribes, to secure business deals with doctors in Spain and across the world.

FMC was found to have bribed Spanish doctors extensively

Antler traders under fire

The US’ Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) found corruption was visible in Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) from the early 2000s, yet nothing was done to address the matter. The SEC was tasked with probing the claims made about FMC, which said it had co-operated fully with the investigation. Shockingly, the probe found that the company had bribed doctors in Spain, Turkey, China, Serbia, Bosnia, Mexico and Saudi

Arabia, along with several West African countries. The SEC regulator said: “Employees made improper payments through a variety of schemes including through the use of false consulting contracts, the forgery of documents, and channelling bribes through external intermediaries. “Senior management actively thwarted enforcement efforts, and the improper conduct continued for years.” The SEC’s probe even discovered that FMC paid for Spanish doctors to attend international medical conferences, and to enjoy holidays. It funded their projects and bought them gifts to secure deals. And the company spent almost €2.7m in Spain alone, the SEC found.

Cunning conman’s finally caught by National Police CHRISTOPHER Woodhead, a cunning British conman, who was on the run for 15 years, has been arrested and detained on the Costa del Sol by the National Police.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested seven people, and are investigating 16 others, linked to the fraudulent buying and selling of deer antlers. The suspects have been accused of various crimes, including document fraud, money-laundering and identity theft. The operation began in April

2018, when Guardia officers, allegedly, discovered that the main buying-and-selling points of deer antlers were in the Jaen province of Andalucia. The antlers were being sent to Hong Kong, the US and Canada, where they were being transformed into various products. Officers estimate that in the last five years, sales of the antlers, through wholesale outlets, add up to more than €11m.

The 66-year-old, from Huddersfield, preyed on the vulnerable and elderly in construction scams, totalling €1.6 million. After being held by police in San Pedro, the Yorkshireman now faces a six-year prison sentence for his crimes, all based in Leeds. He had been labelled an “amoral fraudster” at his trial by the presiding judge, who found him guilty of swindling a dozen clients, by taking on building jobs, which he didn’t carry out. CW, as he was referred

to by Spanish police, was thought to have moved to Canada or Spain, after first disappearing in 2004 with the money he had extracted from companies. A National Police spokesperson said: “CW, who was officially made a wanted man in 2008, was said to have committed a dozen crimes of fraud in the UK, while he was in charge of several firms, which sold products to other construction companies. “The fraud consisted of

charging for labour services and not carrying them out. But he also diverted cash to another company, through the fictitious supply of materials and creation of fraudulent invoices. “He used the income he obtained for his own benefit, on things like holidays and maintenance payments to his ex-wife.” Woodhead was apprehended on Tuesday on Calle Manuel Cantos, in San Pedro, and will be flown back to the UK.

Unkind sons lose their inheritance

THE Supreme Court in Madrid confirmed that a mother from Vizcaya (Bilbao) was entitled to disinherit two of her sons. She cut two of her three sons out of her will, because the tribunal recognised their “contempt and neglect” during her lifetime. The Supreme Court ratified an earlier verdict from the High Court in Vizcaya, which, in turn, had upheld a verdict from a lower court. There was no justification for the behaviour of the two sons, which the court described as “attributable only to themselves”. Their mother had been subjected to psychological abuse for many years, particularly in the latter stages of her life when she suffered ill-health, ruled the judges.

Police arrest leader of a €600m empire THE alleged boss of a €600m empire, involved in drugtrafficking, moneylaundering and murder-for-hire, was arrested in Andalucia on Monday.

The arrest took place on a Huelva property, following the largest-ever investigation by Europol, which involved Spain’s National Police, as well as officers from the UK, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia. The identity and nationality of the 48-yearold man have not yet been released. But at least 22 other suspects have been arrested across the continent. Authorities seized €8m in cash, diamonds, gold bars, jewellery and luxury vehicles, and the organisation was described by police as “highly professional and dangerous”. It was dedicated to largescale, drug-and-cigarette trafficking, mostly into the UK. The profits would then be laundered through currency-

exchange offices, before being invested into the Spanish property market and elsewhere. The gang also arranged and carried out murders-forhire, according to police,

whose investigators believe they raked in around €600m between 2017 and 2019. Its leaders and members used counter-surveillance and counter-intelligence measures to try to evade

police, as well as hightech and encrypted communication devices. It forced the five countries involved to create a special task-force, through Europol, last November.

Single shot was a big ‘warning’ from gangland

Poverty-line families!

RISING inequality in Spain is fuelling political strife and internal divisions, warn global economists, as another NGO claims that more Spanish families are slipping below the poverty line.

The Arroyo de la Miel, in Benalmadena, where a man was shot

A MAN, aged 25-30, has been shot on the Costa del Sol in a suspected gangland attack, which, say police, might have been a warning.

The victim, of North African origin, who was attacked at around 12.30am last Sunday, in the Arroyo de la Miel area, endured a leg wound in Benalmadena, before being taken to the Hospital Clinico. Police have not made any arrests, but they believe the single shot fired could be a possible warning from a gang, because the man’s leg was the target, and nothing more serious. The type of weapon used is not yet known, but the victim is now believed to be in a stable condition. The incident occurred just a fortnight after Malaga’s Public Prosecutor’s Office expressed “serious concern” about the rise in Costa del Sol murders. In 2018, the Malaga institution opened 95 preliminary murder hearings, which was a 44% increase on the previous year, and 61% more than four years

ago. Meanwhile, assassinations in the province, or “intentional homicides”, saw a 25% increase, from 52 in 2017 to 65 last year. The Public Ministry added that criminals, including those involved in the hashish trade with Morocco, act “without fear”. Explosives used by “narco terrorists” in settling scores between rival gangs, was also highlighted by the Ministry, as a concerning trend. It comes after a Marbella car-wash, and a house in Benahavis, were bombed last October in a settling of accounts. Those attacks followed the death, a week earlier, of Brian Martos Carmona, who was gunned down in Estepona and bundled into the back of a car. That month was particularly bloody, because narco and bomb-maker Hamza Ziani was also slaughtered in a Torremolinos sushi restaurant. And in May 2018, David Avila Ramos was killed in a drive-by shooting in San Pedro, a month after his chiringuito was burned to the ground.

Girl, five, swept to her death at sea

A GIRL aged just five, drowned after being swept out to sea in an inflatable she had been using for sunbathing on Pineda beach, near Tarragona. Tragically, waves pushed her half-amile from the coast after the inflatable had been caught by strong winds

and waves. A Red Cross boat was able to rescue the youngster from the water, but the crew’s resuscitation efforts proved fruitless. Reports in the Spanish press say there were no lifeguards on duty at the beach when the incident occurred.

The World Inequality Lab, a group of economists, headed by Thomas Piketty, said political division had grown, in line with rising inequality, in the wake of the last recession. “We believe that inequality, linked to austerity, unemployment and economic scarcity in general, is one of the main causes of the political instability the country is going through,” the report authors told Spanish media. “In general, both the initial boom of Podemos, the Catalan independence situation, and now the rise of Vox, can be understood

as different responses to a shared economic malaise.” The report found that although average incomes in Spain rose above pre-2007 levels for the first time in 2017, gains were concentrated among the wealthiest. The poorest 90% saw wages rise by 2%, while the richest 1% saw increases of 24%. Save the Children has also claimed that more than 40% of single-mother families are at risk of poverty, while 25% live in extreme hardship. The revelation came as the Catholic Church’s Caritas Foundation claimed that more than 50% of families, with just one working member, face greater risks of poverty and social exclusion. The organisation claimed that labour reforms undertaken by the previous, conservative, Partido Popular (PP) Government, increased the volume of temporary work, cutting salaries and hours.

Thy Kingdom Come arrives… in Tenerife

31st May 2019 - 6th June 2019

Live Arico News

Vicky needs fostering VICKY was found, near the airport, with her face badly beaten. She is now fully recovered, and we are looking for a foster home for her. All food and future medical expenses will be paid by Live Arico.

THE Anglican Church of St Francis, which worships in San Eugenio Church, Playa de las Americas; Espiritu Santo Church, Los Gigantes, and San Blas Church, Golf de Sur, has joined the Thy Kingdom Come prayer initiative, along with churches from over 65 different denominations in 114 countries around the world.

The prayer movement started as an invitation from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in 2016, to the Church of England, and has grown into an international and ecumenical call to prayer. Christians are asked to join a global wave of prayer, for more people to come to know Jesus Christ, from now until 9th June: Ascension to Pentecost. Throughout the centuries, Christians have gathered at that time to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit, and Thy Kingdom Come picks up this tradition. Over the past

three years, more and more worshipping communities have dedicated the days between Ascension and Pentecost to pray “Come Holy Spirit”. After the very first Ascension Day, the disciples gathered with Mary, constantly devoting themselves to prayer, while they awaited the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total because, on our own, we can do nothing. It is our prayer that those who have yet to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, and his love for the world, will hear it for themselves, and respond and follow Him. Members of St. Francis Church will be praying each day for those they know personally, who need Jesus in their lives, and for churches around the world. San Eugenio Church will be open for prayer today (Friday), from 10am to midday, and Monday to Friday, at the same time, from 3rd to 7th June. Special sessions for children will be held in Espiritu Santo Church, Los Gigantes, at 5pm, on Monday (3rd June and Thursday (6th June).

There is a lot of entertainment planned, such as live acts, a raffle, a tombola and other activities. Those confirmed to perform on the day are Lisa Cowley, Carol Slater, Carol Singer, Christopher James and Ann Marie Dorrity. We are so grateful to them and to The Original Wigan Pier, for giving us this opportunity to raise awareness of K9, and also to raise money for our puppy Reina, who flew to Sweden a couple months ago. For those who don’t know the story of Reina, she was a

young puppy who was flying to Sweden, with her new, forever family. Arriving in Sweden turned into a nightmare, because her microchip couldn’t be read, even though it had been put in by a vet and checked. Things were not looking good for her. We were given different options to try to rectify the situation, such as sending her back to Tenerife, putting her in quarantine or putting her to sleep, which, of course, we were not going to let happen. We chose to put her into quarantine, but this came at great expense, and we are currently holding fundraisers to pay this huge bill. Reina spent 21 days in quarantine in Sweden, and was happily reunited with her new family at the end of April. The cost of Reina being kept in quarantine was over €2,500, but worth every cent, if it meant that Reina could stay in Sweden, and also be reunited with her new family. Now, we need to raise money for the bill, which is how this fundraiser came about. Please come along and support us on the 1st June, from 3pm. We would

be so appreciative of any support you can give. Fantastic news! Nepo and Toby, who have both featured in the paper recently, have now been adopted. They have been given the chance of happiness, in new, loving homes. Meet our dogs! We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 9.30am-1.30pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com

Please neuter your dogs! SADLY, more and more puppies are being abandoned, purely because the owners fail to be responsible, and don’t get their dogs sterilised. We can never stress enough the importance of this, especially with the everincreasing number of abandoned and neglected dogs in Tenerife. This gorgeous little pup was picked up by Protection Civil, after being left on the streets by its heartless owner. Upcoming event Please remember our next event at the refuge next Saturday (8th June). It will will be a fun-filled afternoon, and you will have a chance to view the kennels and see the 220 dogs, patiently waiting for their day to come to be adopted. Microchip We can never express enough the importance of having your dog microchipped with your correct, updated telephone number, so your pet can be returned to you, as quickly as possible, without causing unnecessary stress. Also, by law, your dog has to be registered with your local town hall. Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in

the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. The eggplant is such a versatile vegetable! THE eggplant, also known as aubergine, garden egg, guinea squash, melongene and brinjal, usually has an egg-like shape and a vibrant, purple colour.

It is rich in fibre and low in calories, and provides a range of nutrients. It also features in the Mediterranean diet! Although the dark-purple version of eggplants is best known, the shape, size, and colour can vary from small and oblong, to long and thin, and from shades of purple, to white and green. Fast facts about the eggplant * It comes in a range of colours, shapes and sizes *The anthocyanins in eggplants may protect heart health *Another chemical in eggplants, nasunin, may help improve blood flow to the brain *Cooking methods include steaming, roasting, boiling, baking or frying, but steaming appears to preserve the antioxidant levels most

effectively *Scientists are looking for ways to maximize the antioxidants in the eggplant, while reducing its bitter flavour. Recipes An eggplant’s slightly-bitter flavour and spongy texture can make it a unique and

interesting addition to many dishes. Some ways to eat an eggplant Here are some tasty tips: Eggplant pizza crust: Replace pizza crust with sliced eggplant, and add tomato sauce, cheese and other toppings, for a gluten-free,

low-calorie treat. Eggplant side dish: Sauté or stir-fry chunks of eggplant in olive oil, and serve as a side dish. Burger garnish: Cut the eggplant lengthwise, into thick slices, and grill them. They can be served on their

LIKE a lot of foods, you either love them or you hate them, but eating carrots offers several health benefits. Improves vision There’s some truth in the old wives’ tale that carrots are good for your eyes. They are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into Vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A is transformed, in the retina, to rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night vision. Beta-carotene has also been shown to protect against macular degeneration and senile cataracts. A study found that people who eat large amounts of beta-carotene had a 40% lower risk of macular degeneration, than those who consumed little. Helps prevent cancer Studies have shown that carrots reduce the risk of lung, breast and colon cancer. Falcarinol is a natural pesticide, produced by the carrot, that protects its roots from fungal diseases. Carrots are one of the only common sources of this compound. A study showed a third lower cancer risk by carroteating rats. Slows down ageing The high level of betacarotene in carrots acts as an antioxidant to cell damage done to the body through regular metabolism. It help slows down the ageing of cells. Promotes healthier skin Vitamin A and antioxidants protect the skin from sun damage. Deficiencies of Vitamin A cause dryness to the skin, hair and nails. This vitamin prevents premature wrinkling, acne, dry skin, pigmentation, blemishes and uneven skin tone. Carrots are used as an inexpensive and very convenient facial mask. Just mix grated carrot with a bit of honey. Helps prevent infection Carrots are known by herbalists to prevent infection. They can be used on cuts - shredded

raw, or boiled and mashed. Prevents heart disease Studies show that diets high in carotenoids are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Carrots not only have beta-carotene, but also alpha-carotene and lutein. The regular consumption of carrots also reduces cholesterol levels, because the soluble fibres in carrots bind with bile acids. Cleanses the body Vitamin A assists the liver in flushing out the toxins from the body, and reduces the bile and fat in the liver. The fibre present in carrots helps clean out the colon, and hastens waste movement. Protects teeth and gums It’s all in the crunch! Raw carrots clean your teeth and mouth. They scrape off plaque and food particles, just like toothbrushes or toothpaste. Carrots stimulate gums and trigger a lot of saliva, which, being alkaline, balances out the acidforming, cavity-forming bacteria. The minerals in carrots prevent tooth damage. Prevents stroke In a Harvard University study, people who ate five or more carrots a

week were less likely to suffer a stroke than those who ate only one carrot a month, or less. Fun facts about carrots *Rabbits love to eat carrots, but they shouldn’t eat too many. A rabbit eating a single carrot is like us eating over 20. Carrots are good for rabbit teeth and don’t have artificial sugar, but too many natural sugars can cause digestive problems and diabetes. They probably would do better with carrot tops! *Carrots are the second-most-popular type of vegetable, after potatoes *The biggest carrot recorded was more than 19 pounds, and the longest was over 19 feet *There are more than 100 species of carrots. Some are big, some are small, and they come in a variety of colours including orange, purple, white, yellow and red *English women in the 1600s often wore carrot leaves in their hats, in place of flowers or feathers *The name “carrot” comes from the Greek word “karoton.” The beta-carotene that is found in carrots was actually named for the carrot itself

*The average American eats about 12 pounds of carrots a year.

That’s only one cup per week. We could easily triple that, while also

eating a variety of other vegetables. How to eat carrots The nutrients in carrots are tightly encased in protein sacs that have to be broken by heat (cooking), or mechanical action (grinding, juicing or proper chewing). Cooking the carrots in fat or oils, or pureeing or juicing them, increases the availability of carotenoids by 600%. Fats also help the absorption of carotenoids into the blood by 1,000%, as carotenoids are fat soluble, so pour a little olive oil on top!

THE Spanish Interior Ministry have introduced a new, sevenpoint action plan across Spain, which they hope will help, significantly, in the reduction of the number of casualties on roads. To this end, €7.2m of funding was set aside, in order to implement this plan, and was announced at the recent 20th anniversary celebrations of the Guardia Civil Traffic school, on the mainland. The minister has praised the work carried out by the Guardia Civil Traffic Police, who are dedicated to government road-safety policies, through the DGT. Having taken into account road fatalities, so far, this

31st May 2019 - 6th June 2019

Measures to improve road safety year, this was fundamental in this implementation. There will be three, specific areas targeted: conventional roads, motorcycles and vans. The vast amount of people who lost their lives were on conventional roads, in headon collisions. With motorbikes, deaths have also increased, and this measure is aimed at achieving better behaviour from bikers, and one hopes this will include cyclists, and improving the co-existence of other road users. With regard to vans, there has also been a substantial increase in fatal incidents, and this needs to be addressed. The seven-point plan is as follows: 1. The installations of rumble strips Many motorways, and some conventional roads, already have these. A further 3,000km of roads will have them installed, on the hard shoulders and central-lane markings, to assist in the avoidance of vehicles colliding, often head on, with those travelling in the opposite direction. There are many blackspots in Spain and the Canary Islands. Of late, there has

been a substantial increase in fatal road accidents, here in Tenerife. 2. Limiting of overtaking on certain, conventional roads Overtaking is one of the most dangerous manoeuvres carried out on an open road. This will be restricted in more areas, by widening the solid white lines (where possible), and marking new solid white lines. It has been estimated that this will reduce the amount of deaths on the roads, because of this type of driving. The numbers are increasing of those who die in these types of accidents. 3. Treatment of dangerous intersections Junctions, especially here in Tenerife, are some of the most dangerous of areas on a road network. Of course, they are necessary, as vehicles cross and interact with vehicles that are already moving, which is always a risk, perhaps more so in tourist areas or resorts, because strangers to the area are not familiar with the road layouts. How many times have we, as residents, been behind, at the side of, or in front of, a hire car, more often than not

clearly marked as such, and seen quite absurd driving and lane changes etc? Part of this plan is to install warning signs on the approach to such key junctions, especially where visibility is impaired by other signs, built-up junctions or those with bushes or trees. This project is also expected to save approximately 20 lives a year. You will have noted, over the last few years, obstructions being removed at hazardous junctions. 4. Pedestrian crossing signals Illuminated warning signs will be installed on pedestrian crossings, making drivers easily aware of them. They will be the standard type, with orange warning lights. There are many of these being currently installed in the municipality of Arona. 5. Monitoring and control of excesses of speed at night, and of delivery vans The idea behind this is to continue with the current campaigns on a monthly basis, and to increase this at night, and on routes frequented by such vehicles. Drivers will be stopped and the occupants identified. The

driver will be tested for alcohol and/or drug use, and correct documentation will be checked, including current ITV and valid insurance, with a receipt. 6. Monitoring of speed, and safe distance between vehicles on motorways In addition to travelling at excess speeds, maintaining a safe distance will be focused upon, not only by roadside patrols, but also helicopters, as will information notices warning of safe distances. These signs are numerous in the UK. The number of people killed, year on year, because of another driver being too close, is, sadly, ever increasing. 7. Motorcycles The final point is that motorcycles will be given more attention by both the police at road-side checks, and at the ITV stations, to ensure the insurance and other documents are in order. Police will be monitoring the speed of bikes, and those involved in dangerous manoeuvres, which result in often-fatal, or life changing, accidents.

‘Nature’ children grow up with sound mental health CHILDREN exposed regularly to nature may be less likely to suffer mental health problems in adulthood, according to research led by La Caixa bank’s scientific unit.

The facts, says the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal), were extracted from 3,600 people in four countries: Barcelona, in Spain; Stoke-on-Trent, UK; Doetinchem, The Netherlands, and Kaunas, Lithuania. Results, published in the International Journal of Environment Research and Public Health, maintained that a positive correlation was found between time spent in non-urban outdoor areas in childhood, and better cognitive development, as well as mental and physical well-being. This correlation was found to have an immediate effect, more or less, because nature and fresh air have long been thought to be beneficial for mind and body. But the combination had never been tested for its longer-term qualities before now, or its impact on adulthood when exposed to it in childhood. Also, prior studies focused almost exclusively on the

“green areas” of parks, gardens and woodlands, and rarely on “blue areas”, as the research terms them, such as ponds, streams, canals, rivers, lakes and beaches. The investigation formed part of the European Phenotype Project: “phenotype” being the combination of genes, or “genotype”, with the environment, seen in physical, mental and behavioural features, which are part-nature and part-nurture. It also involved a questionnaire for adult

participants about how often they were exposed to nature as children. These included both planned or intentional trips, such as excursions to mountains or visits to the park in their town, and also spontaneous ones, like playing in their gardens at home. They were also asked about the size of non-urban outdoor areas near where they currently lived, how much they used them and how satisfactory they were. A psychological examination

assessed their level of nerves, anxiety and depression in the past four weeks, and also their levels of vitality. In other words, energy versus fatigue. The space and quality of nonurban, outdoor areas near their homes were calculated by satellite imaging, to compare and contrast with their self-report of this. The results found that, overall, poorer mental health results, for those who had spent most of their childhood indoors or in heavily built-up

areas, compared with those who had spent a lot of their early years outdoors in the countryside, parks, or near water. “In general, those who spent less time in contact with nature during their childhood, have less enthusiasm about non-urban outdoor areas than those who spent more of their early years in the countryside,” said Myriam Preuss, main author of the research report. Wilma Zijlema, ISGlobal investigation co-ordinator said: “The conclusions showed the relevance of exposure to nature in childhood, in developing an appreciation for the natural world, and in developing a healthy, psychological state in adulthood.” At present, 73% of Europe’s population live in built-up areas, with no frequent access to non-urban outdoor places, and this figure is predicted to rise to 80% by 2050. “For this reason, it is crucial to know the implications for little boys and girls, about growing up with limited opportunities to enjoy nature,” said Ms Zijlema. “Many little girls and boys in Europe are used to living an indoor life, so it’s a good idea to improve natural, outdoor spaces in towns and cities, designing them to be safer, and making them more inviting to play in.”

There’s light at the end of this tunnel!

CD Tenerife

THE old guard came to the rescue of Tenerife last Sunday, at the most complicated time of the season, and in their most crucial match so far.

At home under the bright sunshine, the blanquiazul put their faith in homegrown talent and several experienced battlers, to fight it out and get closer to safety in the league. New coach Sampedro highlighted this by leaving out five of the winter signings from the starting X1, choosing passion from the seasoned players instead, as Segunda Division B had ceased to be a possibility, but a definite threat. Oviedo seemed hurried as they were pushing for the play-offs, at the other end of the table. And although the defeat doesn’t strip them of aspirations, it has now made it more difficult, mathematically. At the start of the match, Luis Milla and Alberto Jiminéz controlled the game. But for some reason Tenerife couldn’t take advantage of the possession, and the Asturians seemed uncomfortable with the homes side’s play. Oviedo themselves weren’t very incisive when they had the ball, although they forced a good save from Dani with an effort from Johannesson, on 28 minutes. From there, Tenerife were urged on by the Heliodoro faithful, who felt all was to play for, and they were right! When, in the 41st minute, Jorge was blatantly fouled by Carlos Hernández in the box after a great Malbasic cross, the referee pointed straight at the spot for a penalty. Captain Suso stepped up and wrongfooted Nereo Champagne in the Oviedo goal assily to give Tenerife a valuable lead just before half-time. And they did not put the brakes on after the goal, Nano nearly doubling the score after some excellent inter-play with Naranjo, just before the end of the first half.

Real Oviedo 1 CD Tenerife 2

Tenerife continued with the intensity and dominance they had shown earlier, and kept possession well, looking for a way through in the second half. Twenty minutes in and Milla crossed a perfect ball from the left that found the head of Carlos Ruiz, in front of goal, and he made it 2-0 with a brilliant, power header, which beat a sprawling Champagne to double Tenerife’s lead. By now the home team were full of confidence, with a two-goal lead, and it seemed that nothing could stop them. But this is football, and this is the story of Tenerife’s season. Just as Oviedo began to despair, lacking ideas, Alberto conceded an absurd penalty with a completely unnecessary hand-ball in the area, which gifted a penalty to the visitors. Joselu was not about to make a mistake for Oviedo, and took full advantage, sending Dani the wrong way to half the deficit after 71 minutes, and bring anguish to the Heliodoro home crowd. An extremely nervy 20 minutes followed until the final whistle. Luis César Sampedro wanted to close off the game by bringing on Isma López and Coniglio, but the suffering did not stop. By then, Oviedo had piled forward, throwing everything into it, and they nearly equalised with an 81st-minute shot by Omar, which hit the post, and a

close header by Ibra Baldé, four minutes later, which Dani saved. At the death, however, Naranjo had a shot that was saved, acrobatically, by

Champagne, and although Tenerife had to play five, excruciating, injury-time minutes, the referee did blow his whistle to signal a fantastic victory for Tenerife,

and, probably, the most valuable three points of the season. But don’t be fooled, because it’s not over yet. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and the race for safety is now a four-horse race and not five. But the finish is further complicated because Majadahonda’s final game is against Reus, who have been excluded from the league, so they are gifted three points. This means that all the results remain crucial, although Tenerife can guarantee safety by beating Lugo on Sunday, or if Oviedo beat Majadahonda… watch this space!

Spanish footballers are arrested, after intense, match-fixing probe

AROUND a dozen arrests were made in Spain on Tuesday, as part of a probe into an alleged matchfixing network in Spanish football. Among those detained are former Real Madrid and Spain international Raúl Bravo, suspected of being the ringleader, as well as Agustín Lasaosa, chairman of the Huesca club. A La Liga Segunda (second division) match, between that team

and Club Gimnàstic de Tarragona, known as Nàstic, sparked the probe. Also, a La Liga clash under investigation featured Valladolid and Valencia on the last day of this season, which saw the latter qualify for the Champions League. Strange bets placed by at least one Valladolid player aroused suspicions. But sources stressed that no Valencia players were being investigated. Among those arrested was Borja Fernández, a Valladolid player who retired from professional

play after the match against Valencia. He skippered the side, spending 84 minutes on the pitch. A tweet from the Onda Cero radio network said: “Arrested!!! National Police officers take away Borja Fernández, who just retired from Real Valladolid, in a raid against match-fixing.” The other detainees included Carlos Aranda, who has played for a number of Spain’s topdivision La Liga teams, Íñigo López Montaña, from Deportivo de La Coruña, along with a former Huesca player, and Juan Carlos Galindo Lanuza, head of Huesca’s medical services. Police carried out nine searches, throughout Huesca, Madrid, Valladolid, Málaga and A Coruña, although the main focus of the probe was in the first of those cities. A large number of police officers descended on the headquarters of the Sociedad Deportiva Huesca club, first thing on Tuesday morning. However, the club’s lawyer insisted that there was “calm”, as well as “uncertainty about what could happen”. He added: “There are

no concerns at the club, and we are at the disposal of the courts for whatever they request from us.” The suspects are accused of reaching deals to fix three games, in the Primera, Segunda and Tercera divisions. According to police sources, “the Third Division (Tercera) game was unsuccessful, prompting the players involved to “compensate their losses” with another fix. The Huesca-Nàstic game, which aroused initial suspicion, took place on 27th May, 2018. During the match, betting was suspended at 30 of the 57 biggest

gaming services, after irregular patterns had been detected. Bets, amounting to 14 times bigger than the norm in this category, were being placed on a 0-0 scoreline at halftime, and, eventually, a victory for the visiting team. Both predictions came true. At the time, Nàstic were fighting to avoid relegation, and were 29 points short of Huesca in the league. The latter team, meanwhile, had been promoted to the Primera on their previous outing. According to police sources, the matchrigging comprised a number of stages. Firstly,

the network would choose the games, being played, preferably at the beginning or end of the season. The agreed bets were combined, which meant they did not just involve the final score, but other elements of the game as well, such as corners, fouls, plus yellow or cards… “in order to increase the margins of the winnings, notably”. One player from each of the teams in question would be approached, preferably the captain. Once the fix was agreed, cash payments would be made before and after the game.

Squash

Sex toys are final twist on trophies WOMEN champions, who won their Asturias Squash tournament categories in Spain, were each awarded a trophy… as well as a sex toy! Male winners had to make do with a trophy only, but the women were also handed two boxes of depilatory wax, an electric file to exfoliate feet, and a vibrator. The so-called “prizes” have led to accusations of sexism, and there have already been three resignations from the organising club, which may be dissolved, following this scandal. The matter is now in the hands of the Asturian Women’s Institute, which is holding an investigation. “I felt surprise and indignation,” said Elisabet Sadó, among the

event winners on Saturday, 11th May, in Las Vegas, Corvera. At 37, and after more than 15 years of professional competition, Elisabet has been world’s No.1 and a seven-time Spanish champion. But the shocked squash star told respected El Pais newspaper that she’d put up with far less promotion of her sport than the men for years, and fewer facilities. But she had never received such a gift for her achievements. She added: “Behaviour like this is

the basis of structural machismo, which, in the most serious cases, ends up with murdered women.” The four prize-winners filed a complaint two days later with the Squash Federation of Asturias, expressing their displeasure at “some sexist and out-of-place gifts”. The tournament was organised by the Club Squash Oviedo, who admitted in a statement that the gifts “were inappropriate and should never have been delivered”. And they apologised to the players.
