Conditions are ideal for €860m wind farm here
Continued from Front
And, says the Canarian Government, operations could start as early as 2024 if further, regulatory hurdles are overcome this year. It would be Spain’s first commercial-scale, offshore wind farm, located in the Canaries Special Zone (ZEC) and also Africa’s, because the islands are located in the Atlantic, some 100km off the Moroccan coast. The volcanic nature of the archipelago means that the continental shelf, off the Canaries, drops away sharply, making bottom-fixed offshore wind farms difficult, which is why floating solutions are favoured. The wind farm would involve an €860m investment, according to the Canarian Government. But Equinor, which confirmed that specifics were still under
discussion, declined to confirm the planned size, or investment, of the array. Whether the 2024 start date can be achieved depends, to a large degree, on further bureaucratic and regulatory steps. Pedro Ortega, (photo, far right) the Canarian Government’s Economy, Industry and Trade Secretary, last month urged the Spanish Government to create an inter-ministerial working group, to determine marine zones for the location of wind arrays off the archipelago, which is a prerequisite for building Equinor’s project, and others offshore. “We need to negotiate with Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition… to consolidate the role the Canaries play as a pioneering region in the development of offshore wind,” said Ortega. The Canarian Government’s preliminary studies have
determined three zones off the islands: Tenerife, southeast of Gran Canaria and west of Fuerteventura, all three with ideal conditions: wind velocities, water depths, topography and proximity to “load centres”. So far, Spain has just one 5MW offshore turbine installed,
Diner’s fish meal was overrun by parasites
and an Alegacy Gamesa machine, installed on a Gran Canaria jetty in Las Palmas. A second pilot turbine, the part-scale prototype of a twin-rotored, floating, wind-power platform, which is being developed by EnerOcean, should be
installed this summer at the Canaries Oceanic Platform test field (PLOCAN), also off Gran Canaria. The Canarian Government has also received requests from other companies, besides Equinor, to use the islands as a test case for offshore wind.
Unscripted move by this terrified driver IT could have been A DANGEROUS species of parasite was found inside the fish a customer was about to eat at a Fuerteventura restaurant.
This particular anisakis parasite is normally found, not only inside fish but also on octopus and squid, or other species from the cephalopod family. If just one of these parasites is ingested, it could cause severe digestive problems, and, in many cases, can create dangerous, allergic reactions, which could be quite serious. The
digestive disorder caused by the parasite is known as anisakiasis, and you can contract the disorder if you eat fish and cephalopods, which haven’t been treated or cooked. Consequently, it is extremely important that gastronomy professionals know about this parasite. They need to be able to recognise it before cooking and preparation. A visitor from Tenerife was left in shock and disbelief, when, last Monday afternoon, at a popular fish restaurant in Puerto del Rosario, he was about to get stuck into his breaded mackerel. He cut the fish, and, to his horror,
discovered that it was full of parasites. The man said he took his plate over to the waiters, who were in the kitchen, and showed them that the fish was full of wormy parasites. But, he added: “From the look on their faces, it was clear that they didn’t think it was a problem.” The affected person was on the island for work purposes, and what upset him most was the way he was treated... as though he were regarded as the problem! Yet legislation in Europe, including Spain, states that fish with visible parasites are not to be sold.
a scene from an adventure film… a car was hanging off the edge of a ravine, ready to fall from a considerable height at any moment.
In fact, the vehicle is actually a specialised car, adapted for people with disabilities, and the controls are on the steering wheel, specifically, for easy use. But the incident took onlookers by surprise on Tuesday afternoon in the Santa Cruz area of Icod de los Vinos, after the driver had climbed into his parked car, and prepared to set off, as usual.
But for reasons unclear, the vehicle began to reverse, going straight across the street before it was left, swaying, at the top of a ravine! The incident caused a slight panic in the area, but the emergency services were notified immediately, and a fire-fighter team were dispatched, ready to assist. The stunned driver was still inside the car when they arrived, and a fireman climbed on to the bonnet to act as a counter-weight, preventing it falling from a height. And, fortunately, a tow truck, assisted by fire-fighters, pulled the swaying car out of danger, to the relief of its owner.

US fugitive arrested by FBI and Guardia
7th June 2019 - 13th June 2019
Pets tail-cutting gear confiscated by police THE Local Police, based in Santa Cruz, have confiscated nearly 100 appliances, used, specifically, for cutting off the tails of cats and dogs.
They were discovered after the police received information, via an official complaint from animal protection group “El club de la Huella”. The Local Police’s urban environment protection group inspected several pet shops in Tenerife’s capital, and saw that these particular
items were being sold to the public for as little as 3-5 euros. However, officers were able to confiscate close to 100 appliances, preventing further sales to the public. Although these specific items can be actually used for other reasons, they were designed and used for mutilating the tails of pets. It is against the law to cut the tail off any animal, and is only possible when a vet, for whatever medical reason, authorises the procedure. But bear in mind that a vet is the one person qualified to carry out this procedure, in special veterinary centres.
FBI agents, with the help of Guardia Civil officers, arrested a wanted man in Guargacho, where he had been living with his wife.
The 53-year-old was on the run from the US law group, whose officers had been looking for him since January, for kidnapping, threats and torture, in a South Florida building. He was said to have walked through the front doors of the premises and tasered his
victim, before kidnapping him. The victim claimed that after the attack, he awoke in a room full of weapons, with his hands and feet tied together to restrain him. He was then thrown into a van, in which he was beaten constantly, and his attacker, along with another man, used a blow torch to burn his hands. The torture he suffered forced him to give the assailants his address, along with the alarm code, and he told them where they could access 50,000 dollars. The arrest came after a huge
search, involving the FBI and Guardia Civil, in mainland Spain, especially Madrid, as well as Tenerife, where he was eventually located. The Guardia discovered the fugitive’s origins: he was born in Paris, had Russian links, and now has American nationality. He has been detained and is at the disposal of the National Courts. Guardia agents say that these types of fugitives migrate to populated areas, mainly where there are a lot of foreigners, in the hope of going unnoticed.
Stressed woman reports The cheek of a sex-abuse boss to police blade-runner!
A BUSINESS manager, from La Laguna, has been accused of sexually abusing a female employee by taking advantage of his position.
The National Police released a statement on Tuesday morning, confirming that the abuse happened while the woman was working. It also stated that the employer, who became aware of the woman’s personal circumstances,

took advantage of her situation. And when they worked the same shifts, he would conduct several acts of a sexual nature, causing considerable stress for his employee. The situation lasted for
some time before the alleged victim, who began to suffer anxiety attacks, reported him to the National Police. The suspect, along with the police report, have been presented to the judicial authorities.
The attack happened in the early hours of last Monday, and the National Police were called by the victim, who said he needed assistance. Officers arrived at the Calle Leon y Castillo location, where the individual was waiting, and he told officers that he had just been attacked, violently. He also said he was left with an injury after being stabbed, and told officers his attacker had escaped with €50. Police searched the area, and soon found the assailant in the vicinity. And, after identifying the 37-year-old man, who already had a police record, they detained him, but only after they patted him down and discovered a blade, hidden in his clothes.

Sunday road chaos as the accidents pile up
5 CW
Mobile mum and baby foil an attempted thief
AT least 11 people were injured last Sunday afternoon, following several traffic accidents across Tenerife.
One happened on the TF-1, another on the TF-5 and one more in San Andres, and all 11 victims, including three minors, needed some degree of medical assistance. The first accident happened on the TF-5, just before 10.30am, when a 40-yearold female driver crashed into the central reservation while passing through Tacoronte. The woman, who was travelling with a minor, suffered serious injuries through the initial impact. But, luckily, the four-yearold was more fortunate, because, apart from the shock, the child suffered superficial wounds, with no other complications. The second accident happened just after 3pm, outside the Nautical school in San Andres, when a trio of young women were run over by a vehicle, which was driven on to the pavement, accidentally. They were aged between 17
and 21, the latter suffering back injuries. The other two had several body abrasions. The third accident on sorry Sunday happened inside the Guimar tunnel heading southbound, just before 7pm, with no fewer than six vehicles involved. Six people, including two minors, suffered diverse injuries, and the youngsters were taken to Candelaria Hospital and were admitted on a temporary basis. The cause of the accident is still not known, but various pick-up trucks were sent the area of Los Jardineros to assist in the clean-up. And, because the accident happened inside the tunnel,
mainly, huge traffic jams quickly built up, lasting up to two hours or more, before the highways regained some sort of normality. Another serious accident had been reported on Saturday night, when a 42-year-old biker suffered serious injuries after colliding, head-on, with a car. The accident happened in Guargacho in the Arona municipality, just after 9pm, and the biker, in a critical condition, was taken immediately to Candelaria Hospital for specialised treatment. The car driver was treated at the scene by the ambulance team, after experiencing a panic attack.
A MAN aged 42, detained by the Guardia Civil in Gran Canaria last Tuesday, was accused of entering a house in Artenara, intending to commit a robbery in the island’s highest village.
He is believed to have forced open the front door and discovered, quickly, that inside was a woman and her two-month-old baby. The accused forced the new mum and baby into a room inside the house and trapped them in by bolting the outside, making
it impossible for the woman to escape. Fortunately, she had her mobile phone with her and called her partner to explain the situation. He dashed to the house, rapidly, and released them both. The couple checked their premises, but the accused was nowhere to be seen. However, there was clear evidence that he had gone through the drawers and cupboard, although nothing appeared to have been been taken. The Guardia’s investigating officers were soon led to believe that the 42-yearold had broken in, and they arrested him on charges of breaking in, and attempted robbery.

NEWS IN BRIEF The cultural festival to Norwegian back in Canaries? preserve old traditions NORWEGIAN Air Shuttle is now reconsidering its January decision to close its bases in the Canary Islands. The move was a result of a cost-cutting initiative. But the airline, now aware of the potential there, because of an ever-changing competitive landscape, is hoping to maintain its bases in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, although a firm decision has not been made. Norwegian is awaiting the right conditions, including cooperation from unions. And the decision, says the company, is expected to benefit the passengers, employees and shareholders.
Electricity bills are 8.7% down
THE cost of electricity in Spain and the Canaries went down by 5% in May, making them a total of 8.7% cheaper than a year ago, and saving the average household €5.17. The wholesale energy market has also seen a reduction, with May’s average daily price being €48.40 per megawatt per hour (MWh), which is 13.5% lower than in May last year, and 4.2% cheaper than in April this year. Overall, the average, 2019 wholesale price of electricity has been 5% lower than in 2018, when costs began to soar. After a series of consecutive increases, by September 2018, the wholesale price of electricity peaked at €71.27 per MWh, or 40% higher than the average for the previous three years.

IMOQUE Cultural Association’s 6th annual festival takes place tomorrow (Saturday) from midday, in La Caleta’s Plaza San Sebastian. The festival, which always aims to underline the importance of Adeje’s cultural traits and traditions, has consolidated the town’s collective memory in a way that brings the public together every year.
The Association works hard to maintain and recover many of our older skills, and those traditions of yesteryear. These memories have formed part of the borough’s ethnographic archive, working to keep alive those processes and traits which are lost, or are on the point of disappearing. During the day, there will be a myriad of things to do and see, including a craft fair, the tasting of local produce, and a demonstration of “salto del pastor” (the shepherd’s leap).
There is also Gomeran music, folkore of La Graciosa, and Canarian wrestling, as well as an exhibition featuring various dog breeds, and lots more. There are also musical performances scheduled, by Parranda los Toledo and the Imoque Cultural Association. The latter is supported by Adeje Council, which is keen to promote the activities and groups, dedicated to the rescue and preservation of local heritage and traditions.
he’d netted, along with the location of where they were caught. A statement by the Las Palmas National Police commander read: “According to information received, the fish were being sold on to restaurants, as well as being sold to the public, which, under no circumstances, is ever permitted.” Guardia officers caught the fisherman by surprise,
watching him get into his Zodiac-type boat, in the isolated area of La Pared, then waiting, patiently, for his return. When he arrived back, he was nabbed with fish weighing 19.9kg, comprising shellfish (cabrillas) sama and groupers. And, because the catch was so significant, it was handed over to La Milagrose social services, in Corralejos.
A greedy fisherman, who hooked himself! A MAN threw himself from a sixth-floor, Barcelona apartment after an apparent domestic dispute with his former partner. He is in a critical condition, which investigators believe to be the result of a violent altercation with his ex. The incident occurred around 9am, when the police found the accused seriously injured from the fall. His partner was found soon after, in another apartment, with serious injuries, after what appeared to be multiple blows to the head. The accused is under suspicion of attempted murder, and an investigation is underway.
Passport gives the game away
THE National Police, working at the passport control in Lanzarote’s César Manrique airport, have detained a 38-year-old Briton. There was a warrant out for his arrest, issued by the Lanzarote courts, and, as the officers checked his passport, they were alerted about the warrant, immediately. The warrant was issued some time ago, when the man was on the island, and he was apprehended by the officers as he disembarked his flight from Newcastle.
A SNEAKY angler, in the south of Fuerteventura, drew attention to himself by catching nearly four times the volume of fish allowed, recreationally.
The Guardia Civil from the island’s marine detachment, in collaboration with the Canarian Government’s fisheries inspection service, discovered that he’d caught various types of fish, weighing nearly 20kg. But they soon got the measure of him. The fisherman, from the Tuineje municipality, drew attention to himself after catching more fish than the daily 5kg permitted by law. Prior to his arrest, he had boasted on social media about his recent catches, and posted images of the fish

ACTING Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has rejected the idea of a PSOE-Podemos G o v e r n m e n t coalition, but he has opened the door to the latter holding ministerial roles on an “independent” basis.
Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has set out a battery of requests, which he will insist on as a condition of his support for Sánchez. These include abolishing the 2012 Labour Reform to “create a job market based upon permanent employment positions”, a minimum income of €600 a month for everyone, working or not, and the working week cut from 40 to 34 hours, without any salary reduction. Iglesias proposed these measures during a meeting with business owners in Catalunya, arguing that they would be “good for Spain, for companies and for Catalunya”. He detailed all his party’s proposals in the fields of economy and tax, which include a reduction on company profit tax for firms with a turnover of less than €1m, from 25% down to 23%, increasing income tax for those earning €100,000 a year or more, a wealth tax, a tax on the banks, and several environmental policies. During the talk, Iglesias said he felt a coalition between the PSOE, or socialists, led by Pedro Sánchez, and centreright Ciudadanos, would be a “betrayal” of those who voted for the socialists in the 28th April elections: “It’s not a good idea to lose consistency when establishing alliances, and it could be considered a lack of respect towards the electorate,” said Iglesias.

The mother explained on a local television channel that it began when her daughter was speaking with
French tourists given an aerial lift to safety
AN emergency helicopter was requested to rescue a couple of French tourists last Saturday afternoon, after they had strayed to a difficult area of Roque del Conde, inside the Arona municipality. The rural Guardia Civil, as well as the rescue helicopter, were soon dispatched to find and rescue the couple. Fortunately, they were soon located and were, eventually, rescued from an area, difficult to access. Once they were hoisted on to the helicopter, the couple were taken to a helipad at Adeje’s voluntary fire-fighter station, and, happily, the couple were both safe and well.
Rock-climber falls from a 13ft height As for his party running ministries on an independent basis, Iglesias said: “This is the least of my worries. It’s not about demanding seats here and there. It’s about committing yourself to the need for reform, and that’s what we want to push. “Our position in government is modest, with only 42 seats, but large enough to bring about change.” He cited two left-wing Coalition, regional governments, which, he considers, have worked very well: that of the socialists and Compromís in the Valencia region, and with the socialists and Podemos in the Balearic Islands. And Iglesias argued: “Political stability and policies for the long term are key.” Economy Minister Nadia Calviño supported this view, pointing out that the Labour
Reforms of 2010, by former socialist President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and in 2012, by ex-PP President Mariano Rajoy, were drawn up “in the name of creating employment and reducing temporary jobs”. But in the end, she admitted: “They did not serve any of the aims they proposed.” Calviño wants to limit temporary job contracts to six-month versions only, turning as many temporary contracts as possible into permanent ones. This could be challenging, given the high volume of seasonal work in Spain, particularly in tourist hotspots, and in agriculture. Also, certain industries can only offer temporary contracts: a job as an extra on a film or serial, might be for only a day or two.
But in areas of high tourism, up to 99% of new jobs offered are temporary only, mostly for the summer, or specific holiday periods, such as Christmas and Easter, as local statistics in these parts of the country show. Pedro Sánchez gained 123 seats out of 351 in the 28th April general election, leaving him 53 adrift of the required 176 majority. But even if the right-wing PP joined forces with Ciudadanos and far-right Vox, it would not give them enough seats to oust Sánchez. Podemos and the PSOE combined would give 165 seats, but Sánchez would either need to bring some of the independent regional parties on board, or secure their Yes votes in his investiture ceremony.
a boy she liked, and, after he requested, she sent a picture of her body, naked from the waist upwards. He swore to her that he would never share or show anyone the photo, but, months later, she found out from another friend that he, too, had also seen her naked in a photo. She originally sent the photo, via Instagram, through a private account, which allowed some of the followers to see the image just once. The image would stay on the screen for a few seconds before disappearing. But the
boy was crafty and took a screen shot of the young girl, then transferred the image to a WhatsApp group, to which the photo was shared. The teenage girl had discovered that the boys at her secondary school, from the fourth year, had a WhatsApp group, who would send and receive photos of other teenage girls, while they were completely naked or semi naked, without their consent. The mother said that when her daughter found out what was happening, she confronted the boy, her
supposed friend, who told her to eff off, saying it was her fault for sending the photo in the beginning. According to the TV channel, the young girl is not the only one who has reported an incident of sexting. Both mother and daughter both claim that several more girls have made similar reports to the authorities. And, say the National Police, pornographic images on social media between teenagers have grown, alarmingly, over the last few years.
Youngsters’ pornographic images are shared around THE National Police are convinced that pornographic images between teenagers on social media have grown alarmingly over the last few years. And a Canarian mother, from La Laguna, has reported a new case of sexting.

THE fire-fighting Bomberos, called out to an emergency last Tuesday afternoon, helped rescue a 38-year-old man in a Guia de Isora barranco.
The incident occurred while he was rock-climbing, inside the ravine, and, for reasons not yet clear, he fell from a height of some 13ft, injuring himself. The emergency services were notified at around 4.20pm, and an ambulance, along with the voluntary fire-fighters, reacted immediately, heading for Barranco Finca de la Maleza, in Piedra Hincada, to assist the climber. Once he was located, the firemen eventually rescued him, and he was taken to a specialised medical ambulance, nearby. The man, who had sustained back injuries, was taken straight to Candelaria Hospital for treatment and observation. The Guardia Civil and Local Police also made themselves available to assist with the emergency.

Arona jewel thief caught, after just seven hours!
Retail industry enjoying seven fruitful months
SPAIN’S retail industry has seen seven months of consecutive growth, with profits having increased, year-on-year, by 2%. It seems negligible, yet it translates into millions of euros, nationwide.
A ROBBER, who stole jewellery valued at more than €40,000 from an Arona house, was arrested and detained at Barcelona Airport, just seven hours after the theft had been reported.
The National Police pounced on the 41-year-old man, who was carrying some of the jewellery, stolen from the woman he’d been living with. On her return from work, she noticed that the wardrobe in which she kept the jewels had been forced open, and
that her precious belongings were missing. The disappearance of the gems, and the man, led her to file a report with the National Police, who carried out an investigation of his whereabouts, after she had named him. The police discovered that the wanted man was flagged at Barcelona airport, coming in on a flight from Madrid. After he had been intercepted at the airport, the police identified him and searched his luggage, finding some of the jewels reported as stolen by the victim. They soon detained him, awaiting court orders.
Tourist’s 15th-floor fall
The 2108 Easter campaign was split over March and April while, this year, it fell entirely at the end of April, and tourism figures were disappointing. That was down to poor weather, leading to many of the main parades being rained off. But even allowing for differences in dates, April 2019 sales are up 1.1% against those of the same 2018 period. The source of these figures has not yet been confirmed, but is likely to come from fiscal data, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the Spanish Trade Confederation (CEC). According to the latter, the seven-month continuous growth in sales has mainly benefited high-street chain stores, department stores and large shopping centres, rather than smaller boutiques, plus family-run or mediumsized local shops, which saw a 0.5% reduction in their yearon-year takings. The CEC calls this a “chronic problem” but says the majority of the industry’s freestanding shops are working hard on “reconversion”, realising that the only formula for the survival of thousands of businesses lies in becoming as competitive as
possible, and going digital. For this to happen, boutiques and local shops need to be declared a strategic sector, says the CEC, to enable them to benefit from State funding. Larger retail companies are reporting success, however, with a 1.1% increase in sales at service stations, as well as 2.1% in all other areas of the industry. Food sales increased by 4%, household equipment by 2.8%, and all other goods by 0.4%, except clothing and accessories, which fell by 1.3%. Small chains reported a 4.3% rise in sales in April, the most recent full month for which figures are available, while the takings of national and international chains grew by 4.2% and department stores by 2.2%. Overall, retail earnings
rose in 14 of Spain’s 17 autonomously-governed regions, with the four that attract the most tourists seeing the greatest hikes: the Balearic Islands (3.5%), Andalucía (3.2%), Madrid (2.9%), and the Canary Islands (2.5%). These improved results, in most parts of the country, led to a small employment rise in the sector, with 2.4% in service stations and 1% elsewhere. Only in the landlocked western region of Extremadura did employment in retail go down last month, by 0.2%, and those which saw the greatest increases in new jobs were Navarra (1.8%), the east-coast region of the Comunidad Valenciana (1.5%), and the Balearic Islands (1.4%).
Mystery of body at base of a cliff A BRITISH holidaymaker fell to his death from the 15th floor of his Benidorm apartment block, in the early hours of last Sunday.
Colin McGarry, a 48-year-old from Belfast, died at around
1.45 after plunging from the balcony of Torre Gerona, in the “Little England” area of the Costa Blanca resort. He had arrived in Alicante with a group of friends, the previous Friday, and a postmortem will be held. Local Police are probing the incident, although no information has been released.
A MAN’S body was found last Monday afternoon, off the Telde coast in Gran Canaria, lying at the bottom of a cliff in the La Estrellas area. A person out walking nearby, who made the discovery at around 4.30pm, notified the authorities immediately. The body was in an area extremely difficult to access by land or sea, so an emergency helicopter was de-
tailed to recover the corpse. The victim’s age, or the circumstances surrounding his death, are still not known.
But the National Police have opened an investigation, to determine the events leading up to the tragedy.

Spain now accepted as a role model for disposal of medicine
SPAIN has become a medical “role model” for other parts of the world, thanks to its system of medication disposal, which helps prevent water contamination and other environmental hazards.
Juan Carlos Mampaso, managing director of non-profit association SIGRE, which collects pharmaceutical waste, says medicine banks, provided by the organisation, are set up in practically every pharmacy in the country. They are installed for customers or patients, to drop off pills they no longer need, or which have passed their use-by date. But other healthcare waste, such as needles, gauze, disposable or broken thermometers and X-ray plates, should not be dropped off in SIGRE banks. In 2018, the last complete year, deposits of medications surplus to requirements went up by 12.5%, and the system has inspired other countries, in and outside Europe, specifically in Latin America, which are now beginning to create their own medicine deposits. As well as providing a safe disposal method, these banks help raise awareness among patients of the environmental benefits involved, says
Mampaso. Fewer and fewer people are throwing out-ofdate pills down the toilet or in bins, where they could end up in the water supply or in landfill, creating long-term toxic effects.
And even if they do not contaminate the water supply, they can still end up in seas and rivers, if the sewage plant filters are not up to scratch. Also, if deposited in the
rubbish, they can end up in landfill, where they mix with soil and are soaked into the earth when it’s raining. And, again, this can enable them to leak into the water supply. Last year, the average
patient dropped off 103gms of medicine in SIGRE banks, putting the country well above the European average, with the Spanish regions of Navarra, Aragón, Catalunya, the Basque Country, Galicia and Madrid leading the field. Empty pill-boxes and blister packs should also be deposited in SIGRE banks. Some 20% of the total were dropped off at these points in 2018, but these can sometimes contain traces of chemicals, which need to be destroyed under controlled conditions. Technology and technique has advanced somewhat in the pharmaceutical industry, says Mampaso, allowing the weight of medicationpackaging to reduce by 23%, and leading to one in four medicines qualifying for an “eco-design” sticker. That’s where the volume of paper and cardboard is reduced by shrinking the box, whether it be made of recycled paper, card or plastic. And plastic consumption can be reduced by putting the pills closer together in blister packs. Once the packaging is cleaned of all chemical traces, it is recycled in the relevant paper, card, glass and plastic channels. But medications deposited must be destroyed, because it is against the law for them to be reused, even if only one pill is missing from the box.

Another TF-1 crash in Las Chafiras area
YET another accident occurred on the TF-1 last Tuesday morning, when two people were injured after a collision in Las Chafiras, San Miguel.
The incident happened just before 9am, when the emergency services received a call requesting medical assistance for the couple. Ambulances were soon sent to the area, where Guardia
Civil Trafico officers were already controlling the rushhour traffic. But long trafficjams were already visible because of the accident. A 61-year-old woman, together with a man aged 40, were hurt in the collision, the woman suffering facial injuries as well as apparent damage to her arms. The man also had injuries to his face, and was in pain from bruised hips. They were both transferred to Hospiten Sur for treatment.

Woman charged after starving dog to death
A WOMAN who kept her dog trapped on a balcony, where it starved to death, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil on “animal abuse” charges.
The Spanish woman, 45, said the dog belonged to her expartner and “no one wanted it” after the relationship broke down. She claimed the mixedbreed dog, aged two, had
also been “refusing to eat” for two months. But when animal associations rescued the dog from Alicante’s El Campello area, it began to “drink and eat”, desperately, before dying of multiple organ failure. The Dignidad Animal President said: “I approached him to caress him and tried to raise his head, but he couldn’t.” The woman’s neighbour served a denuncia with the police after spotting the “skin-and-bones” pet on the balcony.
Guardia Civil dig out a landscape fraudster
A RESIDENT from La Laguna, accused of fraudulence through his own landscaping business, has been arrested by LaVictoria-based Guardia Civil officers. After committing himself to carrying out the clients’ work, the 41-year-old received advanced payments. But once he had the cash, he dodged the clients, and even changed his address on several
occasions to avoid them. Another reason for his constant moves was to avoid the Guardia Civil, who were also searching for the fraudster, having received many official complaints. They conducted a complicated investigation to find his whereabouts, because there was a search warrant out for his arrest. In total, the fraudster scammed around 4,000 euros. But, once located, he was detained by the Guardia and presented before the judicial authorities in La Orotava.
SIM-swap fraud on the rise here, warn the experts
IF you suddenly lose your smartphone signal for no good reason, made sure you check your bank accounts. When Mario Fernández’s cellphone signal failed, he came out with the familiar “Damn technology!” phrase. He switched the phone off, then back on again, but to no avail. When he got home, he called his operator from a different phone to explain the situation. “They told me I had asked for a duplicate of my SIM card in another city, but I told them that wasn’t the case,” said a baffled Fernández. Suddenly, alarm bells started ringing in his head, and he checked his bank account, only to find it was blocked. He contacted his bank, which confirmed that his account had been frozen after unusual activity had been detected: several thousand euros were missing, and a loan for another €50,000 had been requested! Somebody had accessed his personal data and did his absolute best to grab everything he could. “It could have been a case of SIM-swap fraud,” said Carlos Vico, a lieutenant at the Civil Guard’s department of cybercrime, who is sure this type of offence is on the rise.
“We don’t have a precise number of reports, but, each year, there is a significant increase in cases,” he said. Fernández’s case is still under investigation, and Vico explained that, initially, the criminal gets hold of the victim’s bank account details. A copy of the SIM is then needed to break the two-factor authentication, used by many lenders, who send an SMS to the client’s phone with a code, before authorising a transaction. “The first cases surfaced in the US, but it has been gaining ground here since 2015,” said Vico. And, said Carles Garrigues, a professor of computer science at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya: “The phone is almost always the second factor in the twostep verification process. And password theft can be done by what is known as ‘phishing’, which is the king of scams.” Meanwhile, Vico recommends being careful about what we download on to our devices, looking carefully at the conditions and licences. He also advises caution with open internet connections and our choice of passwords, though he admits there is
no such thing as cast-iron security. Fernández, 37, who lives in Almería, still can’t comprehend how the scammers got hold of a duplicate SIM card for his phone. And, looking back on the incident, he says he had no inkling of anything unusual, until he lost the phone signal. “When I saw my bank account, I had to get something to calm me down,” he said. “The financial issue is now resolved, but I still don’t understand how it could have happened.” The copy of Fernández’s SIM was handed over to the scammers in a Vodafone store in Tarragona, 700km from where he lives, and he has filed a complaint with consumer authorities against the company. The criminals range from computer-science students to organised gangs, but Vodafone claims that the company follows a strict protocol when it comes to handing over copies of SIM cards, which can only be done by showing the fourdigit, user-access code to the phone, or the user’s ID card, billing address and the last four numbers of the user’s bank account.
Apartment-fall folly A 45-YEAR-OLD man, who had left his front-door key at home, fell from the secondfloor apartment while attempting to get in, suffering head injuries and a broken arm. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon in Candelaria’s Calle Gomera, and the emergency service was quick to respond with an ambulance, in which he was taken to Candelaria Hospital for treatment and observation.

Breast-cancer drug may give sufferers an extra 2½ years
A DRUG, which keeps metastatic breast cancer in check and provides patients with nearly 2½ years’ grace before resistance sets in, has been developed in Spain, and is now on the market.
Until now, women with breast cancer, with positive hormone receptors that had spread, were given a hormonal treatment which would keep the disease controlled for an average of a year, after which the tumour would become immune to it, normally with fatal results. But 400 Spanish women with an HER-positive strain of breast cancer, which had returned and spread, have been taking Abemaciclib, along with the standard hormonal treatment, via clinical trials, and are responding well, says the research team. The drug, sold under the Verzenios brand name, stops
the cancer progressing for an average of 28.2 months, according to the Lilly Foundation. The group developed it with the help of the GEICAM Group of cancer researchers, along with Madrid’s Gregorio Marañón hospital oncology department. Dr Miguel Martín Jiménez, head of the latter, said to be one of the top experts in their research area by Nabil Daoud, of the pharmaceutical company involved, has reported an excellent response rate.
Work has been ongoing, to create a drug to “turn metastatic breast cancer into a chronic condition,” rather than a death sentence, since 2002, says the Lilly Foundation. Dr Martín Jiménez Verzenios said: “It is very well tolerated, with very few side-effects, and controls the disease in a way never seen before.” He said it supposes a before and after in stage VI breast cancer, providing an injection of optimism for patients. Dr Eva Ciruelos of the
medical oncology service at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre University Hospital, and deputy chairwoman of the SOLTI breast cancer research group, said around 30,000 women were diagnosed in Spain every year with breast cancer, but only 8% of women diagnosed for the first time would go on to develop a metastasis, which suggested the situation was not very frequent. Of these 8% of 30,000, some 70% will be found to be affected with the subtype known as “Luminal”, with
positive hormone receptors. Dr Ciruelos says the next step is to see whether Abemaciclib offers any benefits to earlystage breast cancer, to make the drug more specific to individual patients, subtypes and stages of the disease, identify different aspects of it, and searching for different tumour markers to work out what to do when treatment fails. Ongoing research into the drug may, the team say, lead to it being a permanent, lifelong treatment for metastatic breast cancer, to provide more than 28.2 months of life, and quality of life, before the disease starts to progress again. The Lilly Foundation wants to see if it can be adapted for use in other types of tumour, and even whether it could, somehow, “penetrate into the brain”. Abemaciclib in pill format has been available on prescription since the beginning of May, and is said to be “very comfortable to take, with few, if any, adverse effects”.

Franco exhumation has been suspended JUDGES at Spain’s Supreme Court have suspended the planned exhumation of Francisco Franco, temporarily, following a request from his surviving descendants.
Five judges agreed, unanimously, on Tuesday, to halt the removal of the former Spanish dictator’s remains, from the Valley of the Fallen mausoleum near Madrid. They ruled that it would be “extraordinarily harmful” to his family, and the public interest, to let the exhumation go ahead, before legal issues surrounding the plan were settled. The former dictator’s seven surviving grandchildren have been attempting to stop the exhumation, since the Government announced the plans last June, shortly after taking office last June. In their appeal documents, Franco’s family said: “No family should be forced to go through two exhumations and three burials, of one

of their loved ones, until all jurisdictional ways in which they could enforce their legitimate rights have been exhausted.” Government officials said it would postpone carrying out the exhumation until the case is resolved within the next few months. Originally, it had originally been scheduled for Monday, 17th June. Acting Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said:
“Reaching the ultimate goal matters more than the road we have to travel.” Franco’s descendants had previously challenged the Government over its chosen location for the former dictator’s reburial, in Madrid’s El Prado cemetery, where his wife, Maria del Carmen Polo y Martinez-Valdes, is buried. The former dictator’s family wanted to rebury him in
the capital’s Almundena Cathedral, but the Government feared that would attract fascist and farright pilgrims. Franco, who died in 1975, was buried in the Valley of the Fallen, which also houses the remains of soldiers who died in the Spanish Civil War. It was built using forced labour from the Republican prisoners-of-war, as well as political prisoners.
A MAN aged 21 was detained by police yesterday (Thursday) and charged with theft in a Santa Cruz shopping centre, as well as suspected drug-dealing.
The National Police were called to the centre by its security guards, who had caught the man trying to leave a store with unpaid items. When officers arrived, they conducted a body search on him, discovering he had hidden five small pieces of hashish, weighing a total of 125gms, in between his clothes
Credit-card fraudster worked at his leisure!
A MAN accused of fraud was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Fuerteventura, alleged to have copied credit-card details from paying customers, while he worked in the excursion and leisure business.
The 32-year-old, self-employed person also operated in harness with another company, which reported its suspicions to the police. He obviously believed that when he made transactions, or took money from tourists, it would go unnoticed. He scammed clients who were mainly foreign tourists. As they swiped
their card, he would then take out his phone and record the transaction discreetly, noting all the personal details from the back and front. The suspect, from the Fuerteventura municipality of Antigua, would then charge the cards, manually, at the end of the working day, managing to purloin close to 4,000 euros in one month alone. But the company involved the Guardia Civil, after reporting their suspicions to the authorities in April, which is why officers began an investigation. As a result, the Guardia informed the authorities that several complaints of fraudulent acts, involving the foreign tourists’ credit cards, had been reported, recently.

THE Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition, sponsored by The Duke Shops, Costa Adeje, went out with a bang last Friday (31st May), with the final featuring 10 contestants (two were unable to attend, for personal reasons) singing to try to win.
This year’s standard was definitely on another level. They performed for the four judges, and a room packed full of cheering people. The successful 10 had won their
heats to go through to the semi-finals, which were held the previous week. They took it in turns to sing, to be in with a chance of winning the overall prize of €1,000 in cash, and the opportunity to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards. The final three, Georgina Blacka, Phebe Skirrow and Steven Moore, had to sing again, and Phebe, who won her heat at The Palms Pool Bar, and who is only 15, was crowned the winner. A great night was had by all, and congratulations must go to all who entered the competition.

Pound struggles, end of May in focus
at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks.
Sterling stumbled over the last couple of weeks, as the end of Theresa May’s tenure as Prime Minister approached. GBP/EUR fluctuated around €1.13, with the pairing briefly hitting lows of €1.12. It’s been a similar story for the GBP/USD exchange rate, with the pound dipping a cent from $1.27 to $1.26. EUR/ GBP, meanwhile, has been hovering around £0.88. Brexit headlines continued dominating pound sentiment for the second half of May, as speculation about who would take on the mantle of PM intensified. At the start of June, 13 Conservative MPs
had put themselves forward, to take over from Theresa May. Contenders included Sam Gyimah, Mark Harper, James Cleverly, Kit Malthouse, Michael Gove, Dominic Raab, Matt Hancock, Jeremy Hunt, Boris Johnson, Esther McVey, Andrea Leadsom, Rory Stewart and Sajid Javid. As Brexit is unlikely to progress until the
Conservatives have a new leader, the pound will remain on the back foot, over the next few weeks. However, the euro has, so far, been unable to capitalise on the pound’s weakness, partly thanks to the European Central Bank’s (ECB) financial stability review, providing cause for concern. The bank warned that the Eurozone’s financial stability remains
Mayor chosen by the toss of a coin! WHEN local elections end in a draw, with inconclusive results, as is often the case, highly-technical negotiations are usually necessary to work out which party or parties will govern, and who will become mayor. That’s all very well, but some town councils, given the predicament, simply toss a coin to determine the outcome. This happened in the Barcelona-province village of Santa Fe del Penedès last Monday morning, to decide whether one independent party, Alternativa per Santa Fe, or the other, Junts per Santa Fe, would take over running its affairs for the next four years. The former’s leader, Jordi Rius, was mayor until the municipal elections on 26th May, in which he secured 124 votes, which was exactly
the same number of ballot papers as Jordi Bosch, leader of the latter party. With a population of just 379 residents, this means each of the Jordis secured the backing of one-third of the village. The remaining 131 did not vote, or were ineligible. Seven council seats were available, and both Jordis were guaranteed three each, following the voting stalemate. But to determine who would get a fourth seat and gain power meant they had to get the Electoral Board to give the casting vote. A recount confirmed that both had exactly 124 ballots, so the Board summoned Rius and Bosch to the local courtroom for the verdict. Each called heads or tails,
and the spin of a coin resulted in Jordi Bosch taking over from Rius as Mayor of Santa Fe del Penedès. Bosch said: “The coin-tossing exercise was the longest minute of my life, but I’m happy with the result.” But he admits he would have preferred to call a second vote among villagers, which would have broken the tie, legitimately. Jordi Rius was resigned to saying: “Luck has decided, but the village is now divided, as it was around 10 years ago.” He now plans to retire, and not form part of opposition party Alternativa, although he is adamant his decision has nothing to do with the outcome of the heads-or-tails drama.
threatened by a global downturn. While the looming shadow of Brexit will continue driving demand for the pound, in the mid-term, there are also some influential data releases on the horizon, including inflation figures for the Eurozone. If the rate of inflation in the Eurozone eased in May, the euro could come under pressure.
Eurozone retails sales and the European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate decision will also be in focus. Dovish comments from the ECB would be euronegative. Meanwhile, the UK is set to publish its latest PMI figures. If activity in the all-important services sector picked up in May, the pound could edge higher. Over in the US, the focus will be on the ongoing trade dispute between the US and China, and US employment figures. ‘Magic’ cameras enhance police patrol-car facilities
THE National Police authorities are upgrading their mobile fleet to improve efficiency, with Valencia, Zaragoza, Seville, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and Vigo already equipping their vehicles with newtech cameras. These will be mounted in eco-friendly patrol cars, to help with the environment. Each car will have three cameras, capable of
reading a staggering 400 number plates a minute. And the data collected is checked and processed automatically, to identify false plates or stolen vehicles. Other technology accompanying this advancement will be dashboard fingerprint readers, connected to a database for easy identification, and extra cameras to record footage of the exterior and interior of the police vehicle. By 2020, it is believed that 162 of these vehicles will be on the road, making up some 10% of the whole police fleet.

The big entertainment show for the freshest new talent gets bigger this summer when The Voice Kids returns for a new series in June. The stage is set and now there are four iconic red chairs in position. Original Voice Kids star coaches will.i.am, Danny Jones and Pixie Lott are all back and there’s a new kid on the block as the multi-platinum selling singer Jessie J joins the panel. Emma Willis is again hosting the show and, throughout the Blind Auditions, cheering on from the wings as she joins with the hopefuls’ founder fan club members - their friends and families. Each coach has nine places on their teams to fill as they head into the Blind Auditions searching for the next generation of superstar singers. This year the competition is opened up to duos for the first time. Both solo singers and double acts, aged seven to 14, are eligible to come and sing their hearts out in a bid to get a coveted chair turn. After each performance, regardless of whether they’ve won a place with will, Danny, Pixie or Jessie, all four coaches will turn to give the singers words of advice and encouragement. With the teams complete, the coaching begins as the youngsters work hard in the hope of making it through The Battles. Each Battle will see three acts per team sing off for a place in the semi-final. There are no steals for the coaches in this competition so the youngsters will be going all out to make sure they’re one of just three acts their coach will put through to the semi-final. At the semi-final, those singers will be singing to impress their coaches for one last time as each coach selects just one act per team to make it to the live final and then the ultimate decision will be in the hands of the viewers at home. The final four will perform in the live final in the hope of winning the public vote. Win the competition and they’ll secure a £30,000 bursary towards their musical education as well as a family holiday to Orlando courtesy of Universal Studios and Norwegian Air.

Death Row: Countdown To Execution Thursday 13th June, ITV1, 21.00
“This is a journey to a pretty bleak place, a maximum security prison, where there are men being held who know that they are facing a sentence of death… I just wonder what he’s thinking, whether he thinks he deserves his punishment, whether he will ask forgiveness, and what his thoughts are on the years and years he has spent in prison.” - Susanna Reid In the first part of this new two-part documentary series in ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand, Susanna Reid travels to Huntsville in Texas, home of the most active death chamber in the United States, to come face-to-face with death row inmate Patrick Murphy, who is confronting the imminent prospect of being put to death as his execution date draws ever closer. Murphy was one of the members of the notorious ‘Texas 7’ gang who violently murdered a police officer while on the run, after he and six other criminals launched one of the most infamous prison breakouts in American history. With his execution date set and his final days counting down, during an in-depth interview Murphy recalls what led him to the brink of the death penalty - from the prison escape which led to the murder, to how he and the other convicts managed to overpower prison guards and evade capture. He recounts his part in the crime and how he feels about the fate that is only days away. Delving into the details of the crime, Susanna discovers that Murphy may not be as culpable as she first thought of the murder itself. He didn’t pull the trigger that killed the police officer, and he wasn’t at the scene of the robbery which led to the murder in the year 2000. Susanna meets lawyers fighting for and against his execution, the family of the victim, as well as Murphy’s son, who grew up not knowing his father until he broke out of prison and became one of the most wanted men in the United States. As Murphy lives out his last few days and hours, she gains a vivid insight into the impact his execution will have on them all. Susanna asks what the small-town, believed to be broadly pro-execution community of Huntsville feels about Murphy’s sentence, and whether he should pay with his life for the crime. She also finds out what it’s like to live with an execution chamber on their doorstep. When his execution day arrives, Susanna is outside the death chamber, with those closest to the crime waiting for news from inside where Murphy’s final moments are counting down,. When Susanna first meets Murphy, facing him on the other side of a visiting booth window on death row, she asks what brought him to this point. He says: “A lot of poor choices that I’ve made. Basically we all have a choice to do one thing or another, it’s just I’ve made the wrong choices almost every time. And so really, basically, I’ve screwed up.”

Continuing his equatorial journey, in episode three Gordon Buchanan crosses the Pacific. This rich source of life is under pressure from rising temperatures, pollution and overfishing. In the Galapagos Islands, Gordon sees how drones are helping protect baby hammerhead sharks, and the iconic giant tortoise. On the other side of the Pacific, an aerial view sheds light on world’s richest marine habitats, and Gordon joins the search for clues about the future of our coral reefs in a mysterious tropical lake.

We go behind the scenes of the wedding of the year, as Prince Harry marries Meghan Markle in front of the eyes of the world. Cameras go behind the scenes as the Prince’s own former regiment prepare for a starring role in the big day. Corporal of Horse, Frankie O’Leary, served on the frontline with Prince Harry in Afghanistan. He must now rally his troop to ensure their procession is flawless for his former boss’ wedding. We also see the Household Cavalry’s very own Changing of the Guard as their new Commanding Officer gets ready to take the reins. Lt Colonel Paddy Williams is more comfortable riding tanks on the battlefield to riding horses. We follow Paddy as he has to train to become good enough to lead the regiment. Then from the highest officer, to the newest recruits, we see how the trainees are forming friendships with their horses, and learning to master the art of jumping.

The Planets BBC2, 21.00
Professor Brian Cox continues his exploration of the solar system with a visit to a planet that dwarfs all the others: Jupiter. Its enormous size gives it great power which has manipulated the other planets - a power both for good and bad that it wields to this day. Jupiter is not only the biggest, but also the oldest planet in the solar system. It alone witnessed the birth of the Sun and ever since its immense gravity has shaped the destiny of the other worlds. Soon after its birth, its orbit shifted inwards, bringing it ever closer to the Sun. As it moved, Jupiter destroyed embryonic worlds that may otherwise have created additional planets. Elsewhere, it created chaos in the asteroid belt, ensuring that no planet could form here. Only a tiny failed planet called Ceres remains today. Those planets that did survive didn’t escape. Jupiter used its power to draw material needed to form planets into the Sun, stunting the growth of Mars, a planet that could have grown as large as Earth. Indeed, Jupiter would have obliterated every last rocky world on its journey into the Sun, if its tussle with another giant - Saturn - had not brought it back from the brink.

Summer of Rockets BBC2, 21.00
Kathleen (Keeley Hawes) visits a boarding house in search of Anthony, but has no luck. Desperate to keep searching now that she knows he was once in the area near the boarding house, she plans to finally go public with the case, starting with putting up missing person posters. Samuel (Toby Stephens) attends a Gentleman’s Club to speak to Armstrong (William Gaminara), who explains that they have reason to believe that people connected with the Shaw family could be enemies of the state. Not knowing who to believe, Samuel confronts Mr. Field (Mark Bonnar) as to why his dog understands some Russian words. He wants Samuel to gain another invitation to the Shaw’s, and to memorise the layout of the house. Samuel and Miriam (Lucy Cohu) attend a gathering at the Shaw’s for the Society for the Preservation of Victorian Buildings. Once the guests are gone, and Richard (Linus Roache) and Kathleen (Keeley Hawes) are asleep, Samuel explores the house. He finds Arthur (Timothy Spall) is still awake, and they discuss the Soviet infiltration of the MI5.

Who Should Get To Stay In The UK? BBC2, 21.00
Last year, nearly 700,000 people from outside the EU applied to live in the UK. With Britain’s immigration system under increasing scrutiny, this series follows the stories of those desperately trying to stay in the UK and the lawyers tasked with helping them. In episode one, the programme follows the story of 27 year-old Russian student Valeriya, who moved to the UK as a teenager and is now applying for an entrepreneur visa to stay after her fifth student visa expired. She must convince lawyer Anne Morris that her business plan for her fledgling fashion label, funded by a large investment from her father, will meet the Home Office’s requirements. At the other end of the scale is Dillian, who fled Trinidad and Tobago seeking asylum. To make a successful claim, his lawyer Mike McGarvey must prove he’s unable to return home for fear of persecution. As a high-profile gay man, Dillian claims his life would be in danger were he to return. It’s up to Mike to interrogate his story and make sure it stands up to examination.

Several racing modes are on offer: Trail, Marathon, Half-Marathon, Challenge and, last but not least, Ultra – the most taxing race, with a course that goes beyond 100 kilometres. Ever since it was first held, the Tenerife Bluetrail has drawn about 10,000 racers a year. It is one of the most awaited trail running events on the calendar. As a prelude to the race, there will be a Sports Fair at the Santa Cruz International Trade Fair and Convention Centre, where participants will be able to get their number tags, buy gear at good prices and enjoy sports shows.

THE former partner of a 32-year-old mother-of-two, who committed suicide after her explicit, sexual recordings were seen by work colleagues, claims not to have shared the files.
A man, suspected by the Spanish police of sharing the video of a woman who later committed suicide, walked into a police station last Thursday at 4pm. He was taken to central headquarters in Madrid, where he was questioned about the case and denied having sent out the video that triggered the suicide of VR, a 32-year-old mother of two, who worked at an auto factory. The woman was found dead inside her home last Saturday after, allegedly, enduring weeks of humiliation at work, where numerous colleagues were believed to have shared the video, through messaging apps such as WhatsApp. Police sources said the suspect’s statements did not justify his arrest, and he was let go. A judge will now examine his deposition and decide whether to summon him to a hearing in court. Last Thursday, a court in

Humiliated mum kills herself, after workers watch her sexy videos
Alcalá de Henares, where the victim lived, launched an investigation into “discovery and revelation of secrets”, considered a crime under section 197.7 of the Criminal Code. There were five files containing sexually-explicit videos, according to sources familiar with the case, who said the woman had been enduring “pressure and anguish for many weeks”. The videos were made five years ago with a former partner, and VR had since married and had a four-yearold child and a month-old baby. These images ended up on the cellphones of work colleagues at Iveco, a multi-national manufacturer of industrial vehicles. She worked at the company’s San Blas-Canillejas factory, in Madrid, and her sister-inlaw, who also works at the factory, eventually found out
about the videos. So did her husband, reportedly, one day before the suicide. At the company, which employs around 2,500 workers, there were different versions of what happened.
“People will tell you what they know, what they don’t know but believe, or else what they’ve heard,” said one worker. “The only truth is that the video was making the rounds
on several cellphones… who knows how many? And last week, there were little groups talking about it, and the story spread.” Another worker said it would have been impossible for everyone to have been aware of the situation. “There are a great many of us, and this place is huge,” he said. “Many found out on Monday, when everything had already happened.” The victim was one of 500 female workers on the staff of a plant where women represent 23% of all employees. She started out driving forklifts, and was later transferred to the axle department, where she’d been working for several years. Since Monday, Iveco employees have been expressing their grief and agreeing: “Everyone is responsible, to some degree, for what happened.”
Brit who carried some 10,000 date-rape pills
A BRITISH man was arrested after Guardia Civil discovered nearly 10,000 date-rape (zopiclone) pills in his carry-on baggage at Alicante Airport.
The hypno-sedative drug, used to treat insomnia, tranquilises the nervous system and is available on prescription only, in the UK. According to guidelines from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), zopiclone facilitates crimes of “sexual abuse” by stripping
a victim of her will. The 47-yearold man was caught on 22nd May, boarding a flight to the UK. He was released back to his Torrevieja home on charges of a crime against public health. It comes after an Irish woman, 62, also based in Torrevieja, was arrested in January with 5,640 zopiclone pills in her luggage. She was attempting to fly from Alicante to Ireland, but the Guardia Civil said there was no “apparent” relationship between the two. They were both been released on charges, and are awaiting trial.

Spanish surgeons bid to save life of child, 8

Painkiller pills on prescription only IBUPROFEN in 600mg capsules and paracetamol in onegram pills are now only available on prescription, and pharmacies can be fined for selling them over the counter.
In practice, they have not been authorised for overthe-counter sales since 2015, when the Law of Guarantees and Reasonable Use of Medications was passed. But it has rarely been enforced. This leniency began to change in February, when the Spanish Medications Verification System (SEVEM) came into effect, meaning every single box of medicines carried its own individual code, allowing it to be
tracked. Plus, a seal on the lid prevented them from being opened before sale. But, as yet, no real controls have been stringent enough to prevent pharmacies from selling Ibuprofen and paracetamol in these quantities. Now, though, the Health Ministry has announced impromptu inspections on random pharmacies, and, if any are caught failing to stick to the prescription requirement, they could be fined between €30,000 and €90,000, depending upon the severity of the offence. But as most highstreet pharmacies are independently-owned, and, typically, family-run businesses, which order in drugs and claim the prescription cost back from
the State, via their regional College of Pharmacists, a fine of this sum could, literally, put them out of business overnight. To this end, local chemists’ will almost certainly become far more stringent on sales of these medications, and customers are urged to be understanding and not pressurise their pharmacist. Paracetamol can still be bought over the counter in 500mg or even 650mg pills, and Ibuprofen in 400mg capsules. So the end result could just mean a few more euros for the buyer, who would have to double up, or take an extra 50% rather than swallowing just one pill. Otherwise, GPs will rarely hesitate to give a prescription for those who need to take them regularly.
Holiday hell for raped teenager
AN Egyptian child, eight-year-old Naila Avilés Coveña, will soon be travelling to Spain for a life-saving, bone-marrow transplant.
Naila was diagnosed with leukaemia, and, after a long battle with chemotherapy, is now in the process of having a final attempt organised to cure the disease. Fund-raising attempts have been successful in covering the costs of the transplant, thanks to organisations such as FELL and FANO.
Telethons and online fundraising have also enabled the family to purchase travel tickets, and they are now awaiting their visa applications, and the final documents. Naila’s uncle, Edwin Coveña, eager for his niece to attempt the surgery, said: “The chemotherapy is killing her because it damages her good cells, and we were told that she needs a bonemarrow transplant.” Now, the family need the resources to cover the expenses of the stay, between one and two years in Spain, for the child and her mother, Cecibel Coveña.

POLICE are hunting a man who stalked a British teenager at a Majorca hotel, before raping her in a sauna.
The 15-year-old, on holiday with her family, was alone when the assailant entered the sauna and forced himself on her. The incident happened at around 4pm last Monday in the four-star Best Delta Hotel, set in a family-friendly neighbourhood, with cliff-top walks in nearby Llucmajor. The attacker is not believed to be British, although his nationality has not been disclosed. Guardia Civil investigators have established that he was not staying at the hotel, and local newspaper Ultima Hora said he had been identified from CCTV cameras.
Police believe the rapist had been watching the teenager and waited until she was alone. The youngster, who alerted hotel staff immediately after the assault, was taken to Son Llatzer Hospital in Majorca capital Palma for examination. There was no immediate
comment from the Guardia, but a spokesman confirmed that the force were hunting an alleged rapist, who targeted a British teenage holiday-maker. Hotel workers are understood to have been questioned as part of the ongoing police operation, but staff refused to comment.

Danish wife-murderer recaptured in Valencia
Suspect murderer is now imprisoned A LITHUANIAN woman, suspected of murdering a pastry chef in El Ejido in 2014, and skipping the country, is now behind bars in Almeria. When police officers found the victim’s body, there were clear signs of extreme violence, her face and head covered in cuts and bruises. Investigations pointed to money as the motive for the crime, because the
murdered woman was €700 in debt to the Lithuanian and her boyfriend. The suspected killer, who somehow evaded arrest, fled to her native country, taking refuge in the homes of friends and family. However, police and an El Ejido court pushed to have the case reopened, the latter requesting a European Arrest Warrant for the fugitive. Authorities tracked her down, and handed her over to El Ejido police at the end of last month.
DANISH killer Leonardus Lei Beaumont, wanted in Belgium for his former wife’s murder, has been arrested in Calpe, a small coastal town in Valencia, in the Alicante province. Beaumont, aged 71, was tried in his absence, receiving a 20-year sentence for killing Josee Widdershoven in Belgium’s Maasmechelen
in 2009. He was found guilty of shooting his ex-wife at close range with a shotgun, following an ongoing conflict over money. “A crime like that is closer to an execution,” said police at the time. During the investigation, the couple’s two daughters told police that only their father could have killed their mother. “She led a very quiet life and had no enemies,” they said. Beaumont was set to stand trial in Limburg on 6th May,
but when he failed to appear, the Belgian authorities, who suspected he was hiding in Spain, contacted their counterparts there, who traced him to Calpe. He has now been transferred to Madid, where the National High Court is processing his extradition to Belgium. On his return, he is likely to appeal against the sentence in a bid to obtain a retrial, revealed sources close to the investigation.

Memory-loss man still can’t recognise family
WELSHMAN Haydyn Atwood, involved in a horrific road accident, which has put him in a hospital’s intensive care unit, has lost his memory.
He is unable to recognise loved ones after stumbling on to a motorway in Spain and being struck by a car. The 39-year-old has remained in critical care at a Malaga hospital, after the horrific crash. and is
said to be suffering memory loss. The carer, from Caerphilly, south Wales, was jogging down a hill with his teenage son, Ashley, when he tripped and fell in front of an oncoming car. His mother.in-law, Suzanne Gater, said: “They’re worried about whether he’s strong enough for the operations, and worried about his heart. “He also has memory loss, and they’re trying to keep him relaxed and calm. But
he’s frustrated, and doesn’t know who people are. He seems to have gone downhill a lot in himself. The incident came on the first day of a family break in Malaga, on the Costa del Sol. The dad, who still has internal bleeding, has no travel insurance, and his family face a hefty bill to bring him home by air ambulance. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed: “We are assisting the family of a British man, who has been hospitalised in Spain.”

The top-ten habits that can harm your kidneys
YOUR kidneys are two of the most important organs in your body, They filter your blood, produce hormones, eliminate toxins, absorb minerals, produce urine, neutralise acids - and more.
They play vital roles in several of your body’s major functions, and, if they’re not properly taken care of, they can develop some serious health concerns, in the long run. Top 10 deadly habits Damage and the
decline of kidney health can go unnoticed for several years. They’re tough, and can weather a lot, and are even able to function with as little as 20% of their capacity. Just like most things, however, they do have their breaking points. Because of how long your kidneys can tolerate disease and decline, kidney complaints are often referred to as “silent diseases”. Because of this “silent” nature, people often won’t realise that kidney disease is affecting them, until it’s too late. Here are 10 of the top habits that can put a lot of strain on your kidneys,
and cause them to decline or develop disease, over time: Not drinking enough water Some of your kidney’s top functions are filtering blood, and eliminating toxins and waste from you body. If you’re frequently dehydrated, and not getting enough water, then waste and toxins can start to build up, causing damage to your kidneys. Too much salt in your diet Salt is an important mineral for your health, but people tend to consume too much, on a daily basis, which causes blood pressure to rise. This puts a
lot of stress on the kidneys. The general recommendation for salt consumption is no more than 5 grams a day. Delaying the call of nature Your kidneys play a major role in producing urine and removing it from your body. If you often resist the urge to urinate because you’re too busy or occupied with other things, then a lot of pressure is placed on your kidneys, which can lead to kidney disease, kidney stones, kidney failure and incontinence. Kick the sugar habit The over-consumption of sugar can play a big role in the health and functionality of your kidneys. Studies have shown how people who consume two or more sugary drinks a day end up having protein in their urine, which is one of the first indicators that your kidneys aren’t working as they should be. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies Eating a clean, wellrounded, whole-food diet, with lots of fruits and vegetables, isn’t just for weight loss. It also ensures that you are getting the proper nutrition fuelled into your system. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can end up being the underlying causes for several health concerns. For instance, when it comes to your kidneys, being deficient in Vitamin B6 and magnesium (one of today’s top nutrient deficiencies) can increase the risk of kidney stones. Too much animal protein Eating high amounts of meats, especially red, processes a lot of protein into your system, which can increase the metabolic load on your kidneys. The over-
consumption of protein tends to overwork your kidneys, and this consistent stress can lead to kidney damage and dysfunction. Try lessening the amount of meat you eat, and try getting some of your protein from plantbased sources. Sleep deprivation Sleeping gives your body the chance it needs to recuperate and heal, including any stress or damage done to your kidneys. Chronic sleep deprivation keeps your body from being able to heal properly, and can lead to even further stress and damage to your kidneys. Caffeine habit Just like salt, caffeine can also raise your blood pressure and ultimately place a lot of stress on your kidneys. This can cause damage, over time, if you consume too much coffee or other highly-caffeinated beverages. Painkiller abuse Painkillers can be a major go-to for almost any ache or pain, and even minor ailments.
While it may seem harmless, frequently taking painkillers can put a lot of extra tension on your kidneys, and cause harm or damage. There are many natural remedies and treatments available that can help reduce the need for painkillers. Alcohol consumption Though an occasional glass of wine or a drink doesn’t do too much harm to our bodies, most people don’t stop after just one. Alcohol is actually a legal toxin, and when you consume an excessive amount of it at one time, or on a frequent basis, it really overworks your kidneys, and can lead to kidney damage and disease, later on. Conclusion To take the best care of your kidneys possible, focus on shifting to a clean, whole-foods diet. Keep these tips in mind, to aid in breaking any habits that have a negative effect on your kidneys. The better you take care of them, the better they can take care of you.

5G not the way to go! IT’S arguably the biggest existential threat to life on this planet, and it’s only been around for a mere blip in time, historically speaking. A growing number of experts are warning that wireless communication technologies, such as 5G, are a human-health nightmare, especially for children. Despite its “blazing-fast” speeds, 5G and its soon-
to-be widespread presence throughout the world, will, in many ways, spell the end of life, as we currently know it. Unlike 2G, 3G, and even 4G, 5G functionality necessitates a massive grid of very-densely-packed transmission towers and equipment, which means that exposure to it will be virtually inescapable. “Far from a simple ‘next-
gen’ upgrade, powerful 5G (fifth-generation) networks and technology are about to subject everyone, on a continuous basis, to unprecedented forms and amounts of mandatory irradiation, without prior study of the potential health impact or any assurance of safety,” warns Children’s Health Defence (CHD). “Considering that young people, with their smaller
body mass and developing brains, are particularly vulnerable to radiation, the Environmental Health Trust has termed 5G the next great unknown experiment on our children, and the entire human population.” The health effects of 5G exposure are almost too numerous to list. In areas of the world where the technology has already been deployed

and activated, rates of insomnia, miscarriage, memory problems, neurological disorders, and more, are skyrocketing. In Vienna, Austria, for instance, where 5G was reportedly unveiled “seemingly overnight,” local residents are experiencing nosebleeds, headaches, eye pains, chest pains, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, dizziness, tinnitus, flu-like symptoms and cardiac pain. There are also reports of people suffering from tightness and pressure in, and around, their heads, as well as experiencing feelings of short, stabbing pains around the body, and a “buzzing” in their internal organs. Both young and old are reportedly experiencing this 5G-induced trauma, though children seem to be most affected by 5G wireless radiation, which is emitted in the form of high-frequency millime-
tre waves (MMWs). Swedish researchers have confirmed that children are indeed more susceptible to the effects of EMF exposure at microwave frequencies, adding that little ones who start using either cordless or mobile phones, regularly, before age 20, have a more than 400% increased risk of developing a brain tumour. “People’s first reaction to the idea that 5G may be an existential threat to all life on Earth is usually disbelief and/or cognitive dissonance,” a whistleblower from the United Nations (UN) is quoted as saying. “Once they examine the facts, however, their second reaction is often terror. We need to transcend this in order to see 5G as an opportunity to empower ourselves, take responsibility and take action.”

GET your head out of the clouds… this phrase must have been used by schoolteachers, time and again, when students were not paying attention.
It happens when a particular subject does not appeal to them, and their minds wander on to something more interesting than whatever they were supposed to be focusing on. According to research, however, it’s not just children whose minds wander. Harvard researchers enrolled more than 2,200 adults, aged 18-88, for a study in which they were sent regular text messages, questioning what they were doing and thinking. Participants reported that their minds wandered an astonishing 46.9% of the time, often on to positive things, such as getting a promotion, piloting an aircraft, inventing a new kind of space travel… or even founding a small island society. In short, people love to daydream! All this daydreaming might sound counterproductive and even unhealthy. But new research is beginning to show that it might not be. According to research, published in the Creativity Research Journal, daydreaming and “pretend” play are associated with greater creativity in children. For many kids, fantasies form a basis for social activity with their friends, a way to explore their interests, and a vehicle for engaging in creative pursuits, such as drawing or story-telling. And novel solutions to
Daydreaming: why our minds love to wander
problems can even crop up in daydreams. Some years ago, in the National Geographic magazine, Eugenio Rothe, a University of Florida psychiatrist, told author Christine Dell’Amore that, as our minds wander, different part of our brains activate, accessing information that may, previously, have been dormant, or out of reach. Rothe said: “This accounts for creativity, insights of wisdom, and, often, the solution to problems the person

had not considered.” A published study even showed that certain kinds of daydreaming can make people more productive. Nearly 100 college students were asked to name one of the most important goals in their lives. Participants named everything, from making new friends or finding a significant other, to topping a class. A section of the students were then asked to undergo an hourlong intervention, consisting, in part, of daydreaming about their chosen goal, while other students took part in either a stress-management intervention, or no intervention at all. A month later, students were sent an online survey, asking them to rate the degree of progress they had made towards the goals they had set during the initial session. The results indicated that those who participated in just one session of daydreaming, reported significantlygreater progress than participants in either of the comparison
conditions. Perhaps our schoolteachers were wrong, yet they might not have been totally wrong! According to research, when not undergoing a formal daydreaming intervention, those whose minds wander naturally, tend to report feeling less happy after a mindwandering episode, than when they manage to keep focused on whatever activity they’re supposed to be doing. In other words, daydreaming can sometimes be distracting and even frustrating. So what determines when daydreams are good for us, and when they’re simply distracting? Although researchers still aren’t completely sure, one key may be the degree of realism present in the daydream. Fantasy-based daydreams can lead to disappointment, emphasising how we wish our lives would be, but aren’t. Realistic daydreams, on the other hand, show us what might actually be possible in our lives.
They give us mental practice, pursuing important goals, before we have to invest any real time or effort. In another intervention study, participants were asked to engage a different kind of daydreaming from those indulged in by most children. It is known as “structured daydreaming”, and, instead of indulging in flights of fancy about becoming US President, a powerful sorcerer, or a rich impresario, participants were asked to be much more realistic in the images they conjured. They were instructed to close their eyes and use all their senses, vividly, to imagine themselves pursuing a real-life goal, complete with experiencing the frustration of dealing with obstacles that might stand in their way. But, whereas fantasybased daydreaming gives people the pleasant experience of enjoying a mental reward, without any effort, structured daydreaming forces people to rehearse exactly what
they’ll need to do to accomplish their reallife goals. There’s nothing complicated about structured day-dreaming, and, to enjoy your own, simply choose a real-life goal you want to accomplish during the next few months. Then, close your eyes for 20 minutes and see yourself pursuing that goal, as realistically as you can. Don’t skip to the pay-off, as you would, normally, in a fantasy-based dream. Instead, see yourself working vividly on, and succeeding at, each step you’ll need to take. If your goal is to cook more often, for example, you could begin by imagining the first step along your journey: going shopping for ingredients. Picture yourself walking up and down the aisles of your local grocery store, smelling the scents of various foods, and choosing which ones to purchase. Do the same thing for each step, leading to your goal. If you think you might encounter obstacles along the way, don’t ignore them. On the contrary, see yourself facing these obstacles and circumnavigating them, using alternative plans. Like so many pleasurable things, red wine and ice-cream included, daydreaming by itself isn’t unhealthy. But it does matter how and when we do it. And having our heads in the clouds all day long probably isn’t a good idea, but, when done in appropriate ways and at appropriate times, daydreaming can actually help us be more successful in life. Besides, if we’re going to do it 46.9% of time anyway, we might as well make it work for us.

SAFE AT LAST!
CD Tenerife
JUST like last S a t u r d a y ’ s Champions League final last Saturday, Tenerife and their fans didn’t care how they played in this match… all that mattered was the result! A win would have been ideal, but, thanks to Oviedo and their promotion hopes, they beat Majadahonda 4-3 in an epic battle which secured Tenerife and Lugo places in the Segunda Division for next season. As the match started, it was clear that neither team wanted to lose, while in the stands, all eyes were not only on this match, but on Oviedo, because their result would have a huge effect. Lugo dominated play early on, without creating any clear-cut chances. Midfielders Herrera and Lazo did a lot of damage, and Milla alone opposed them. Lazo had the best chance as he broke through, clear on goal, but keeper Dani Hernández saved Tenerife. Malbasic responded on a counter-attack, forcing
CD Lugo 0 CD Tenerife 0
a good save from Juan Carlos in Lugo’s goal. This encouraged the visitors, who approached the Galician area with more danger. In fact, another good run of play from Malbasic left him in an excellent position, but he shot really wide. The second half started with both teams gripped by the
fear of losing. Tenerife had more offensive presence as Lugo took a step back and defended. Nano Mesa had a half-hearted effort for CDT, and Lazo put in a lovely ball for Lugo, but Valentín missed it by centimetres at the far post. By now, Rayo Majadahonda had scored twice in Madrid,
which put the nerves of both teams and their supporters through the roof. In fact, at times on the pitch, there seemed to be a non-aggressive pact between the sides. But then followed near-disaster for Tenerife. A mistake from Dani saw Barreiro pounce and shoot
with a volley, but Dani redeemed himself, saving well. Moving towards the final whistle, the play slowed down, and even though the game was at stake, the fans were hanging on to Oviedo’s progress. Then it happened! A goal for Oviedo from former Lugo player Joselu, to make it 4-3 in Madrid, was celebrated more than any other score this season in the Anxo Carro. From then, until the end, they almost didn’t play, and, at the final whistle, everyone was waiting for the result of the other match. When the score came through, both teams celebrated as though they had won the league, because their safety was guaranteed. Both clubs, by the skin of their teeth, will be in the Liga 1-2-3 for 2019/20. But now the hard work begins. With one match left, on Sunday, Tenerife can now regroup over the summer and start to rebuild in the right way, to be competitive next season. Good luck, Sr Sampedro!
Mourners line streets for funeral of Arsenal hero THOUSANDS of mourners, in the Sevilla province town of Utrera, lined the pavements to give former Arsenal star José Antonio Reyes a standing ovation, as his coffin was carried through the streets, draped in the CF Sevilla coat of arms. The 35-year-old was killed outright in a crash on the road between Sevilla and Utrera last Saturday at 11.40am, on his way home from training. A Guardia Civil reconstruction appears to show that his speeding car brushed against the motorway crash-barrier, bursting a tyre before catching fire. Two of Reyes’ male cousins were travelling in the car
with him, one of whom was also killed immediately, while the other is in a critical condition in hospital, with burns to 60% of his body. Reyes, the youngest player ever to make his début in La Liga, started out with CF Sevilla as a 16-year-old in 1999, and stayed with the club until 2003 when he was transferred to Arsenal for around €30m. José Antonio became the first Spaniard ever to win a Premier League title, in 2004, with Arsenal’s unbeaten “Invincibles”, and he went on to win the FA Cup with them the following season. He moved to Real Madrid for one season in 2006, winning the Spanish League title in 2007, before playing
for a year for Atlético de Madrid and then another with Benfica, with whom he won a League Cup, before returning to Atlético until 2011. Reyes then went back to his first club, Sevilla, and continued there for five years. He was
playing for Second Division Extremadura UD at the time of his death, having appeared for RCD Espanyol, Córdoba CF and China’s Xinjiang Tianshan in China, in between. José Antonio won five UEFA Europa League titles, two with Atlético de Madrid
and three with Sevilla, plus the Europa Supercup in 2010 and an Intertoto Cup in 2007, both with Atlético. He was also a Spanish international, appearing in the 2006 World Cup, in which the team failed to reach the quarter-finals. Arsenal, for whom he made 110 appearances, said Reyes had a special place in the club’s history, describing him a hugely popular figure. “He will always hold a special place in our hearts,” they added. A “deeply-sad” Unai Emery, who coached Reyes at Sevilla from 2013-16, said: “I’ll never forget your magic and your smile, José, never. It was an honour to be by your side.”

Football THE largest police operation in Spanish sporting history ended successfully in Madrid, as Liverpool beat Premier League rival Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to win a somewhat lack-lustre Champions League final. A combination of lenient, restrained policing, and good-natured fans, turned a potential nightmare into a pleasant, if noisy, night in Spain’s capital city. As the huge clear-up operation began on Monday morning, it emerged that only 11 arrests were made from an estimated 100,000-plus British fans, who descended on Madrid for the weekend. The 4,700 officers, tasked with policing the allBritish final, generally behaved admirably, in comparison with their counterparts in Sevilla

vast majority arriving without tickets, along with many who had no accommodation. However, far from the feared predictions of widespread hooliganism in the Spanish press, the weekend passed off almost without incident. With the exception of a few idiots, the mood was extremely friendly, with fans mixing well, and, generally, the police playing their part admirably. There was only one report of brutality when, allegedly, 50 Spurs fans were “battered” outside a bar. And the only recorded offences were for drug possession, assault, flying a drone… and one disgusting example of public indecency. A British woman, 32, was arrested for selling fake tickets, having told two fans that she could get them into the game, at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, for €8,400, but the pair notified police promptly.
Another Liverpool fan, reported “missing” by his family, had actually been arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning. Macauley Negus, 23, from Plymouth, was found by police lying “semi-naked” on Calle de Goya at around 2am, before he attacked them and was arrested. A trio of British fans were also nabbed by plain-clothes officers on Saturday after they stole another fan’s ticket, and also attempted to steal
a TV camera from Spanish channel La Sexta. Aside from mountains of empty beer cans, and the odd hour of lost sleep, which they are famous for anyway, Madrileno (Madrid inhabitants) will be feeling the Champions
League benefits for some time. Over the weekend, an incredible €60m sum was said to have been spent in the city, the average supporter coughing up €150 a day, on top of travel, accommodation and tickets.

Taking football strip just a shade too far!
A FOOTBALL club in Cataluña has sparked a feminist outcry, after hiring strippers to celebrate their promotion.
Footage of team members from Club Esportiu Llanca partying with the scantily-dressed women in their changing-room, surfaced
in Spanish media last week. The club is from Girona Province, and team members were celebrating their promotion to the Second Catalan Division. Club Secretary Franscesc Romero has apologised to Llanca Mayor Pere Vila, but he said his mistake was in not asking the town council for permission to hire the strippers. “Strippers were an original
way of celebrating the club’s promotion,” he added. Pictures and footage showed the women dancing on the changing-room floor, while players gathered around and cheered them on. The club have since issued a statement on social media which said they were sorry for the “error”, and that they supported tolerance, respect and equality.
