Would-be murderer poured boiling water over flatmate THE National Police have detained a 46-year-old man for attempted murder, after attacking his flatmate with heavy objects and leaving him for dead.

The man, who already had 25 criminal offences on his police record, did his best to cover up the incident by trying to modify the scene of the crime. After he had moved things around their Santa Cruz apartment, he had the audacity to pretend that he had found his flatmate in a semi-conscious state. He asked a family member to accompany him to the flat where, supposedly, he “discovered” the injured man, so they could act as a witnesses. The National Police homicide department attended the Barrio de Salud home, after the victim had been found in a seriously-critical condition.

By the time they arrived, though, he had already been taken to hospital for treatment, after sustaining burns and open wounds to

several parts of his body. It became clear to officers that there had been a fight inside the premises, and that the victim had been

battered with heavy, blunt objects, including dumbbells, on which the forensic team found traces of blood. They also discovered that

boiling water had been poured over him, creating the severe burns he had endured. Investigators concentrated on his flatmate, who had “discovered” the body, because something didn’t seem right about how, casually, he had found him unconscious, while accompanied by a family member. The detainee’s story was inconsistent, including his alibi, and officers also noticed that he had injuries compatible with a fight, including a broken finger. Then, because they believed there was sufficient evidence against the flatmate, he was arrested and taken to the police headquarters for further questioning. While at the station with his lawyer, he admitted fighting, and confessed that the burns were caused by him pouring hot water over the victim from a saucepan. The man, now awaiting sentencing, is facing prison.

Thugs charged Moth pest such a mighty with robbery and worry to potato-growers kidnapping

TWO thugs, aged 19 and 23, kidnapped, battered, stripped and robbed another youngster in Arona.

The National Police were able to arrest and detain both men, charged with the violent robbery and kidnapping of a local, Buzanada resident. The 23-year-old, from Adeje, already had a police record for receiving stolen goods. The events happened when the teenager, along with another two men, offered to take the victim home from Las Americas to his Buzanada house. Once inside the car, events began to unfold. While driving back to the victim’s home, they intimidated him with a sharp object. And, upon arrival, they ushered him inside the building, demanding that he handed over money, but he had no cash in the house. Instead, they attacked him physically and stripped him naked, before planning to steal valuable items, including a sound system and a TV.

The victim’s brother, who lives in the adjacent building, heard the commotion, and, when he went to find out what was happening, he was forced to negotiate with the three individuals, before handing over €250, to ensure they departed, as well leaving his brother in peace. The three men left the building, but continued to shout loudly that they would be back for €2,000. National Police, after being notified, were able to identify one of the aggressors in Arona, along with a second man, aged 21, also with a criminal record, who had served time in a Tenerife juvenile centre. During their investigation, the 23-year-old was found in Adeje and arrested, for, allegedly, receiving stolen goods. He had also been in touch with the victim, regarding the sale of the stolen items. The detainees, along with a completed police report, giving factual accounts of the events, will be presented before a competent judicial authority.

THE production of Tenerife potatoes is being affected badly by a pest, namely the Guatemalan moth (Tecia solanivora). So much so that potatogrowers are considering a request for extraordinary aid, to compensate for the economic losses they will face. The Association of Agricultural Producers and Cattlemen of the Canary Islands (Asaga Canarias) supports this idea, claiming in a press release: “The drop

in the harvest, which, in some cases exceeds 50%, translates into a reduction of the marketable volume. “Consequently, the profitability of producers is also affected, especially that of professionals.” The Guatemalan moth first arrived on the island in 1999. But, this year, the impact has been greater because of the winter and spring weather conditions, which have been marked by high temperatures and a lack of rainfall. But, worryingly, these are favourable conditions for the population growth of

this insect, which attacks the tubers directly. To keep the moth’s proliferation under control, Asaga Canarias stressed the importance of producers following “the protocol established by the Council of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water of the Canary Islands Government”. This involves carrying out a series of tasks during the planting, cultivation and harvesting, as well as sticking to controls in warehouses, where the potatoes are stored until ready for marketing.

Tenacious guard grabs shoplifter for Guardia The guard noticed that the man was helping himself to several products from the shelves. But, when he tried to detain him, the man attacked him with a sharp object, leaving him with a stomach wound. However, the gutsy security guard grabbed hold of him and would not let go, until reinforcements arrived in the form of Guardia Civil officers. They soon arrested the

shoplifter, who was identified, rapidly, as a well-known delinquent in the area. And, fortunately, the security guard’s injuries were not serious, though he still required several stitches at a nearby medical centre. But what joy he must have experienced when, despite the pain of his injury, he knew the crook was handcuffed, cowering on the floor and awaiting his fate.

Rock-throwing trio endangered drivers

A DANGEROUS prank, which could have had serious consequences, was played out in the early hours of last Wednesday, by three youngsters.

The teenage boys, who were throwing small rocks and stones at passing cars on the La Laguna road, were arrested and detained by the National Police for committing a serious road-safety crime. It resulted in one of their victims losing her desire to continue driving. The minors were accused of throwing the missiles, from the top of the tunnel in the Verdellada area, at passing vehicles as they drove on

the Via de Ronda. Two of the detained individuals are aged 15 and 16. Officers said in a statement that one victim’s car was badly damaged, and the driver was so severely affected by the shattering attack that she refused to drive again. The police were informed immediately, via a 091 call, and the police attended the scene to investigate. Upon arrival, they saw the three youngsters behaving suspiciously and detained them. The trio, identified as minors, were taken home to their parents or guardians, and told to present themselves at the police station the following morning, to give their official statements.

Guardia arrest arcade man TWO Guardia Civil officers arrested a “wanted” man at a small El Fraile arcade last Saturday afternoon, after learning that he’d had a warrant out for his arrest for some time. The arrest was published on the Facebook page, Policias, showing the officers doing their work. The video shows how the officers approached the man, and how they restrained him by bringing him to the ground, because he resisted being arrested. Also visible on the video is how other clients at the casino stood and watched the arrest, in close proximity.

Adeje’s planning to hold bonfire night this month

NEXT Sunday night (23rd June), people will be gathering in different venues all over Spain to celebrate San Juan, traditionally seen as the night marking the beginning of summer and seasonal activities.

Bonfires and/or a midnight dip in the sea are seen as an essential part of the evening by many here. And, as in previous years, Adeje Council has organised an event through the Costa Adeje Happy Streets department, with the Urb Playa Fañabe S.A. and Le Club Playa Fañabe, featuring a large bonfire and a wooden sculpture, which will be burned on the night. The party, including live music, begins at 7.30pm, and the fire is expected to be lit at around 10pm. If you want to host your own San Juan bonfire there are some controls in place. You will need to apply for permission, using the form that can be downloaded from the Adeje webpage, www.adeje.es and filled in and presented at the citizens’ bureau beside the Town Hall, on the Calle Grande. If the bonfire is on private land, an adult must sign a form, stating he/she will abide by safety regulations. And this document may be requested by the police, or other official people. Do bear in mind that bonfires are forbidden in ravines, protected natural zones and areas close to homes. They are not permitted in

public spaces, either, without proper authorisation. The construction of the bonfire should be in a zone permitting easy access for the emergency services in case of any problems, and away from trees, electricity poles, cars etc. If the bonfire is in a public, coastal area, the people responsible will also need to apply for authorisation from the provincial coastal department, which can also be done via Adeje Council. The time frame for bonfires on the night of the 23rd is between 9pm-2am. Certain materials cannot be used in the bonfire, including materials that give off toxic fumes and/or contaminants,

aerosol cans, plastics, tyres or fireworks. Those in charge must also ensure that the fire is completely extinguished when the event is over, using water/hoses to guarantee the flames are out. The area must also be cleaned up afterwards. Should there be any unexpected, dangerous outcomes, or if the fire spreads out of control, phone 112 or the local police, 922 747 206/922 716 508. These regulations are all in place to guarantee that everyone can enjoy a safe “Noche de San Juan”, without harm or damage to you, other people or the environment.

Such hard labour for rocky police officers

POLICE had to smash up nearly 19 tonnes of rock with sledgehammers to find 785 packages of cocaine, which had been disguised as stone.

Officers had learned that a 188,000kg shipment of stone was being used to smuggle the drug into Spain. The cocaine had been mixed with a rocky mixture which, when set, made

it indistinguishable from the authentic shipment. Despite online pleas for prisoners to be brought in to break up the rocks, National Police officers rolled up their sleeves, and set about some serious hard labour

with sledgehammers, to find the packages, each one holding more than a kilo of cocaine. Eleven suspects, a mixture of Colombians and Venezuelans, were arrested in Humans de Madrid.

The service is already available on the company’s long-distance lines, as well as on the 20 and 40 aeroexpress lines, connecting the Santa Cruz Interchange with Tenerife North Airport, and Costa Adeje with Tenerife South, respectively. Cristina Rosales, Titsa’s head of Communication and Marketing, said the process of renewing the fleet includes numerous advances and improvements in the buses, as well as accessibility and the environment, and also

cocting surprising cocktails. Now, they will have to overcome the best bartenders from more than 50 countries, to claim the World Class crown at the grand final, to be held in Glasgow in September. The event is promoted by Diageo Reserve, and, since its creation, more than 20,000 bartenders, from five continents, have contributed to the promotion and research of the latest mixology trends. In addition to finding this year’s best bartender, the competition is an internationallyrecognised training programme, emphasising the art of cocktail-mixing, by the professionals who devise them.

New Titsa buses to have free Wi-Fi for customers comfort and benefits for users. “Customers demand new services, in line with technological advances,” said Ms Rosales. “So, when we started to renew our vehicles, we decided to incorporate USB ports to recharge mobile devices, and free Wi-Fi on board.” The Wi-Fi service will enable bus passengers to connect to the Internet. Tenerife is ranked 7th in cruise-ship pollution list Barcelona Port

Tenerife Port

BARCELONA has topped the list in a damning report, revealing the true extent of pollution caused by cruise ships docking in ports. And the city is followed closely by Palma de Mallorca.

In fact, Spain had four ports among the top-10, mostpolluted by cruise ships, in

a report from the European Federation for Transport and Environment (T&E). Cruise ships emit large volumes of air pollution in the form of NOx (nitrogen oxides), SOx (sulphuroxides) and the so-called PM2.5 particles, also known as fine, inhalable particles. Air pollution has a damaging effect on health, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. And in Spain, an estimated 30,000 deaths

a year are blamed on emissions. But while the country has made efforts to reduce car emissions, the report reveals that cruise ships, welcomed in greater numbers each year, are even worse. In 2017, a total of 105 cruise ships docked in Barcelona, spending 8,293 hours in port. They caused almost five times the pollution of the city’s fleet of cars, where some 558,920 vehicles are registered. Palma, meanwhile, saw 87

Police flatten bus thieves’ ambition

A TITSA bus stolen and driven recklessly throughout the town of Chío last Sunday, led to a police chase, with officers eventually shooting out the vehicle’s tyres to halt it.

Two middle-aged men, with criminal records, stole the bus in Guía de Isora (Tenerife) in the early hours of Sunday. Fortunately, Chío residents alerted the police that a bus was running

without lights, and being driven recklessly. A local police unit from Guía de Isora chased the bus along the TF82 towards Santiago del Teide, and then on the TF-454 to the junction with the TF-47. During the chase, the police vehicle collided with another police car, coming from Santiago del Teide. At that point, Santiago del Teide’s Local Police shot out the bus tyres, bringing it to a halt at the town’s roundabout, by the Local Police station.

ships dock that same year, causing almost 10 times more pollution than all the city’s registered cars. The ports of Venice, Italy’s Civitavecchia, Southampton, Lisbon, Marseille and Copenhagen were also named in the top-10 worst offenders, alongside Santa Cruz de Tenerife (7th) and Las Palmas (9th). In fact, overall, Spain suffers the most pollution from cruise ships, receiving 172 vessels in 2017, which is more than any

other European country. Faig Abbasov, shipping policy manager at T&E, said: “Luxury cruise ships are floating cities, powered by some of the dirtiest fuel possible. “Cities are, rightly, banning dirty diesel cars, yet they’re giving a free pass to cruise companies, which spew out toxic fumes that do immeasurable harm, both to those on board and on nearby shores. This is unacceptable.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Owner’s stolen tools on Scot's body found in the sea

THE body of a Scotsman, who went missing during a friend’s birthday party in Ibiza last week, was found floating in the sea. Johnny Doherty (pictured), from South Lanarkshire, but living in Glasgow, vanished from the gathering in a rented villa, although his pals assumed that he’d gone to bed. But when concerned relatives phoned to see if they knew of the 28-year-old’s whereabouts, they discovered his bed had not been slept in. His father flew to the island to help look for him, while emergency services launched an extensive land, sea and air search for him. Mr Doherty’s body was eventually spotted by a member of the public, Guardia Civil divers recovering him from the sea off Cap Martinet on 6th June. Police believe he probably fell from a cliff in the area. Mr Doherty, who grew up in Rutherglen in South Lanarkshire, was living in Glasgow.

It's really not to be sniffed at!

A COSTA Blanca city wants to analyse the DNA of dog faeces to catch their unsanitary owners, and put an end to its soiled streets. The Elche Hygiene Department, following in the footsteps of Mislata, near Valencia, wants to introduce high-cost tracking technology, alongside an increase in fines. Hygiene Councillor Hector Diez described Elche’s estimated 20,000 dogs as a “social phenomena”, which is out-growing its owners’ conscientiousness. Mislata has already seen a 90% decrease in dog-waste, after implementing DNA analysis in 2016. The municipality gave all dog-owners a free ticket to have their animals’ DNA recorded, before imposing fines of €200 for fouling, along with €300 for not registering a pet.

It’s magical, for blind mums

THAT magical moment when a baby appears, via ultrasound, is a memory cherished by the mother for life. But the blind and visually-impaired have missed out on that special experience, until now! A new project, called “Mi Bebe 3D”, at Valencia’s Hospital de Manises, has given blind parents the opportunity to hold a silicone sculpture of their unborn baby, thanks to 3D printing technology. Rebeca Hendre Roig, in charge of the Games Department at the ONCE organisation for the blind, said the 3D printing was “the best technology” of today. “Every mother has this crazy desire to see her baby, and this technology helps to shorten that wait,” added Ms Roig, who has actually benefited from a silicone sculpture. The figures are created from ultrasound images, taken in the 32nd week of pregnancy. Once made, the foetus is then installed on a base, with “personalised messages” in braille, and parents can customise the skin colour.

sale, at a street market!

LOCAL Police came across various tools and materials on sale at the Santa Cruz Sunday market, after the owner told them he had spotted some of his items, which had been stolen. He had previously made an official police report about

his tools and certain materials being stolen. The police had a word with the market street-seller, and, after requesting to see his work-permit to operate in the area, as well as proof of where the tools and materials came from, the individual couldn’t present any documents to the officers. Once he was identified by officers, he was issued with a fine for not having the

correct work permit, as well as the lack of authorisation to sell the tools and materials. The 41-year-old market trader said he had been given the items to sell by a third party. Officers found a tile-cutter and tool kit, along with several other items, hidden in a sports bag. The owner then went to the police station to identify and recover his belongings.

Adeje will host the Adapted Swimming Championships ADEJE is hosting the 2019 Spanish championships for Adapted Swimming Clubs, Fundación DISA, at Tenerife Top Training (T3), tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

José Luis Guadalupe, representing the Spanish federation for sports for persons with intellectual challenges (FEDDI), said: “This is a very important meet as it is the last chance athletes have to earn points to qualify for the world championships in London, and the Tokyo Olympics.” Sara Mateos, Fundación DISA director added: “Adapted sports are an important tool in working towards inclusion,” while Adeje’s sport’s co-

ordinator, Pablo Caneiro, added: “Local institutions need to be facilitators for the development of these kinds of events… sports the general public might not otherwise be made aware of.” Ricardo Yébenes, B-Swim event organiser, spoke of the transformative social work that can be done through sport. He said one element that stood out was the perfect synchronisation between the organisation and other entities involved. Virgilio Febles, from local club Midayu, who is delighted to see this kind of competition in Tenerife, referred to the on-going fight to bring entities and businesses on board, saying: “We are proud to have been successful here.” He also thanked all the

swimmers, who had travelled from all corners of the country. Finally, Tenerife Top Training director Gregor Zielhardt, said: “It is a huge honour to be hosting the event, and one the T3’s strong points is swim-training. Every year, we cater for top swim teams from all over Europe, including adapted swimmers.” A total of 232 swimmers, representing 66 clubs, will be taking part, and the competition is organised and designed to give all the swimmers equality of challenge in competition, to guarantee the equity of results. Many of those taking part this weekend will be looking for points to help them qualify for the next World Adapted Swimming championships, in London.

FLUID movements have been detected beneath the Canarian archipelago by scientists, who have been analysing the earth’s behaviour across the islands, recording a mixture of activities since 30th May. Researchers, working at the National Geographical Institute, have admitted that there is movement beneath us, and say there is a possibility in the future that there will be volcanic activity on Tenerife. According to ABC, Spain’s third-most-popular newspaper, data from the analysis has already been made official for the Canarian Government. In March and April, it was pointed out that volcanic activity could not be related to any of the parameter studies. But last month, ABC had access to a report, indicating that the numerous miniquakes registered across the islands might suggest that they could have caused possible fractures. The ABC information indicates that in El Puertito del Guimar, specifically in the first week of June, 20 low-magnitude quakes were

registered, south-east, at a depth of eight kilometres. But none of these quakes was felt by the population because each one was small. Experts say that the registered activity, through its location, is normal, given the background of activity occurring between the Tenerife and

Gran Canaria islands. In May, several mini-quakes were registered in Vilaflor, where 27 tremors were recorded at a five-kilometre depth. Again, experts have pointed out that this seismic activity is considered compatible with activity expected from a volcanic island, such as

Tenerife, where, last year alone, more than 1,000 miniearthquakes were registered. In April, 115 earthquakes were registered across the archipelago, the largest of them on the 3rd at 7.45am, with a 3.2 magnitude on the Richter scale, at a depth of 25km. The epicentre of that tremor

was located in the sea, between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. In Tenerife, there are two zones with high micro-seismic activity: the first is Vilaflor, where 24 movements were registered in May, and the second around GuĂa de Isora, where 21 quakes were registered.

THREE people, including a child, were injured after their excursion bus, full of primary schoolchildren and adults, was involved in an accident on the TF-5, between El Tanque and Icod de los Vinos, on Wednesday afternoon.

Sources say the accident was the result of the vehicle’s brakes failing inside a tunnel. The driver then tried to stop the bus by aiming it against a wall. But, instead of slowing it down, he lost control and the vehicle veered out of the tunnel and down a bushy slope, falling around 10 metres. The children, from La Orotava’s Leoncio Estévez School, in La Florida, were on their way back from a school trip to a Costa Adeje water park. The emergency services, informed of the incident shortly afterwards, sent four

There were 16 children, accompanied by 19 adults, on board the bus. The fire services, local police and the Guardia Civil traffic department from Garachico were also at the scene to assist in the emergency. The emergency services confirmed that among the injured were two adults and a child. One adult had a severe panic attack, while

the other one, who injured her back, was transferred to the emergency department of a hospital in the north. The school issued a statement, saying: “As many of you are well aware, a group of 5th grade children, accompanied by 17 parents and a teacher, were involved in a traffic accident while on their way home from a water park in Costa Adeje. It was a huge scare for everyone! “All the children, thankfully,

walked off the bus, and the only person who needed specific medical treatment was a mother of one of the students. “The school would like to thank all the people in the area who witnessed the accident. Instead of taking videos and pictures, like many people would do, they helped to get them off the bus. “Also, we would like to thank the professionals who helped us, as well as reassuring the

children and their family members. “Thank you to our friends and colleagues for constant contact, demonstrating their love and concern. “Thank you to everyone! What we must be thankful for, and know what is important, is that we are okay and that no one was seriously hurt. “Finally, massive congratulations to the children who were involved in the accident for their courageousness.”

Guardia catch drug-dealer and customer red-handed

A DRUG-DEALER got the shock of his life when Guardia Civil officers interrupted the 43-year-old in the middle of a transaction at a La Orotava car park. The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, when the officers spotted a car parked up at a local petrol station, with a man in the driver’s seat. Another person was standing on the driver’s side, and it appeared to officers that some type of deal was going on. They became suspicious and decided to question the pair. They also carried out a basic body search, as well as checking the driver’s personal belongings.

The officers also searched the inside of the vehicle and found the driver’s backpack, in which they found a case for spectacles, containing several doses of a white substance, supposedly cocaine. The doses were prepared for sale, as well as the substance, and the Guardia agents also came across other items, along with around €2,000, comprising 50-euro notes, mainly. As they checked the backpack, the two men became extremely nervous. One, in particular, became a little aggressive and tried to retrieve the backpack from the officers. Not only did be become physically aggressive with the officers, but he threatened them verbally. The officers had no option but to restrain the dealer before detaining

him. In the end, both men were charged, one for using threatening behaviour towards the officers, and the other for crimes against public health (drugdealing). The officers finally managed to retrieve and confiscate the backpack, after discovering two knives, a martial-arts weapon and a notebook containing names and phone numbers, as well as well as volumes sold and sums owing. The officers tested the 21 small wraps, which proved positive for cocaine, and the total weight of the seizure was 13.45gms, along with €2,335. The arrested men, along with police reports and evidence, were presented before the courts and are now awaiting a hearing,

UK Queen to award Felipe a knighthood

14th June 2019 - 20th June 2019

QUEEN Elizabeth II will knight Spain’s King Felipe VI on Monday (17th June) by awarding him the Order of the Garter, the highest distinction a British monarch can bestow.

A formal ceremony will be held at Windsor Castle, said to be the Queen’s favourite residence, exactly two days before the fifth anniversary of Felipe VI’s coronation, which followed his father Juan Carlos I’s abdication on June 2, 2014. The Rex Emeritus himself will be present when his son is awarded the oldest honour ever granted by a British Royal leader. In practice, the Order of

the Garter was bestowed upon Felipe VI in July 2017, during his and his wife Queen Letizia’s State visit to the UK, and the Spanish monarch wore this medal during the banquet offered

in the couple’s honour at Buckingham Palace. But tradition dictates that the Order is formally bestowed during a ceremony at St George’s Chapel in Windsor following a procession by

the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the most prestigious order of chivalry in England, which was founded in 1348 by King Edward III. The distinction is awarded for courage and loyalty

and takes its inspiration from the legendary King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. King Juan Carlos I received the Order in 1989 and, aside from his son, five other Spanish kings hold it – Felipe I, Carlos I, Alfonso XII and Juan Carlos I’s grandfather Alfonso XIII – as does former British prime minister Sir John Major. Males who hold the Order of the Garter are known as Knights Companion, and women who do are referred to as Ladies Companion. King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands will also receive the Order of the Garter on June 17, which will be presented in person by Queen Elizabeth II herself. The 93-year-old monarch and her son Charles, Prince of Wales are the only two exofficio members of the Order of the Garter.

RECTIFICATION Remote water-meter ON TIMESHARE readings are so easy PROPERTIES

In edition number 1107 of the Canarian Weekly we released an article on the situation at Los Claveles Resort, situated in Los Cristianos. In such article, some information was delivered regarding the litigation between the Club Committee of the timeshare properties at the Los Claveles Resort and Wimpen/Onagrup. Right after the article was released in both the newspaper and on canarianweekly.com, Wimpen and Onagrup have exercised the rectification action provided in Ley Orgánica 2/1984, de 26 de marzo, reguladora del derecho de rectificación, and for the purpose of giving compliment to such rectification action, Canarian Weekly wants to disclose the following information: 1.- None of the disputes between the Club Committee and Wimpen mean any risk for the timeshare owners of losing their properties. Actually, many of the timeshare owners, as members of the Club, disagree with the position of the Club Committee. 2.- No firm court or arbitration resolution regarding the issues between Club Committee and Wimpen has been released and/or duly enforced under Spanish Jurisdiction. Wimpen shall promptly comply with any final and firm resolution (from Court and/or Arbitration) that levelly ensures the rights of all the parties involved in the Los Claveles Resort. 3.- Wimpen has always complied with the Constitution and the Statutes that rule the Club. 4.- For Wimpen this is not a game or a matter of lengthening the cases in time, as Wimpen is a company that successfully provides management services for various different resorts, and achieving the best standards of quality service is one of their priorities. 5.- Onagrup is not a disputing party in any of the court cases and arbitration, to which only Wimpen and the Club Committee are committed.

DETAILS of a new, telematic, meter-reading system, which will allow for remote readings of individual water meters, used by local clients, have been published by Adeje Council.

Carmen Rosa Gonzalez and Esther Rivero Vargas, the Council representatives, saw the system operated in the control centre of the town’s system management. They were accompanied by Emilio Fernández, from Aqualia, Daniel Blanco, and Pedro Antonio Gómez, Entemanser head of Adeje services.

A pilot project phase, operating in El Puertito, has enabled the company to help clients control consumption, improve the service, detect leaks, and save on energy costs. There is no additional cost to the client, 50 of whom are already seeing the benefits. The next phase will probably see new meters installed in El Galeón or Armeñime later this year. Major consumers, such as hotels and complexes, will also see the new system installed over time, with advanced options and maximum precision. Pedro Antonio Gómez said: “The new service means that we can meet the needs of

consumers, 365 days a year. And we hope to be using the new system to control 55% of water usage.” The objective is also to gather more information from, and about, water-users, which, in turn, will assist in improving the service, without having to go to each meter. “It eliminates potential human error as well,” said Daniel Blanco. The new technology installed will allow clients to see their hourly water-consumption levels, receive alerts if there are leaks, or even if someone is trying, illegally, to access their water network. And, via the Aqualia Contact, they will be able to receive a daily usage update.

Play-area scare for five THE popular play centre, Triana, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, was packed with young children, jumping and bouncing around last Sunday.

Suddenly, out of the blue, the

BUDGET airline Norwegian has announced a direct route, from Barcelona to Chicago, which will run eight times a week, from now until 26th October.

Flights will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with 164 in total planned for the summer, during which 56,416 seats will be available. The US is the sixth-most popular destination for travellers from Barcelona’s El Prat airport, and, this summer, 1.81 million seats, on 6,300 flights, will run to cities across the North American country, from Spain’s second-largest metropolitan area. It’s a 10.3% increase in passenger capacity, and 7.6%

in flight traffic. Norwegian’s new route comes just a month after it announced a connection from Madrid to Boston, Massachusetts, offering 52,000 seats over the summer. Apart from Iberia, it is the only carrier to cover this route, which runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Additionally, Norwegian operates direct flights to Los Angeles from Madrid on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, and daily to New York JFK, and to both from Barcelona, where it also runs direct flights to Miami, Florida and San Francisco. The photograph, by Spain’s airport governing body AENA, shows Norwegian Air Shuttle staff cutting the red tape on the first aircraft to fly the Barcelona-Chicago route.

structure began to fall apart, injuring five young girls, who all suffered neck and back pains. The emergency services were called, and two ambulances arrived at the centre, promptly. Fortunately, the injuries were not serious, although two of the girls were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Not so easy for an easyJet pilot

THE pilot of an aeroplane, which left Gran Canaria last Monday on its way to Gatwick Airport, was forced to perform an about-turn after a fight broke out on board. According to a Twitter account from the air traffic control tower, a police presence was requested by the cabin crew upon the aircraft’s return, after an on-board fight had been reported, causing panic among passengers. It was an easyJet flight, covering a regular route from the UK to Gran Canaria.

Dead man was floating at sea THE body of a man, aged around 50, was discovered floating off Gran Canaria’s Arinaga coast last Sunday morning, following a call to the emergency services at 9.52. It was spotted on the Playa de el Cabron sea shore, inside the Aguimes

municipality, and fire-fighters were dispatched, along with an ambulance team to recover the corpse. The firemen had to climb into the water to gather the body and bring it back to shore. The ambulance team could only confirm the man’s death.

School bullying not always investigated

AMNESTY International has issued a warning of unseen bullying in Spanish schools, with several cases not being followed up.

This bullying is not always seen, yet it affects thousands of children and their families every year, according to a human rights NGO. Amnesty International said in its new report on the issue that several cases of bullying, reported to the Education Ministry, had not been followed up. Esteban Beltran, Amnesty International’s director in Spain, said measures to detect bullying were not working, which means the issue is not being handled properly. “We are only seeing the tip

of the iceberg, because thousands of cases are not officially registered, either through data-collection errors, or by a lack of training for teachers and families to spot the signs of bullying,” said Beltran. The director added that bullying was a human-rights issue, resulting in lower selfesteem, as well as health and education problems for victims. “They have a right to grow up, happy and without fear,” he stressed. There were 25,366 reports of bullying made to the Education Ministry on its 2017 helpline, in its first year. Almost 7,510 of them were identified as possible cases of bullying, but just 278 cases, adding up to 3.7% of the total, were referred to the Educational Inspectorate.

‘Mobile’ police stations launched in seven cities

MOBILE “offices” for the National Police are now patrolling seven of Spain’s metropolitan areas, allowing detectives to carry out work they would normally have to do back at the station.

The new hybrid iZ patrol cars, pronounced “ee-zeta” rather than as “e-zee”, because their full title is “i-ZETA”, carry fingerprint readers for immediate identification. They also have equipment for scanning IDs and other documents, and analysing and receiving images, even

in areas of little or no lighting. The “offices”, connected to Cloud technology and linked to a central database, are able to read up to 400 car-registration plates a minute, and can work out where people live, and their history, within microseconds. Front and rear dashcams mean high-speed police chases, such as those normally seen on cop action films only, will become a reality, as the cars the officers are required to chase, can be traced and followed much easier. A central console, with a 10-inch touch screen and an external keyboard in the passenger seat, means police can carry out manual

checks from the cars. The Toyota Prius+ “Smart” cars mean a large volume of work, normally carried out at desks in police station admin departments, can be conducted on the road. That releases more officers on the beat, helping increase security for the public. So far, 10 of these cars have been launched in seven cities: Valencia, Málaga, Palma de Mallorca, Sevilla, Madrid, Zaragoza (Aragón), and Vigo (Pontevedra province, Galicia). And, by the end of next year, 162 of these extraordinary vehicles will be on the streets across mainland Spain, together with its islands, including Tenerife, and enclaves.

Madrid has richest areas across Spain A MAP, charting the average income of people in Spain’s municipalities, reveals a startling north-south divide. While most of the wealthiest towns were located in Madrid, Barcelona and the Basque Country, the poorest towns were found along the coast, from Andalusia to Alicante. The data, supplied by the National Statistics Office (INE) records for 2016, concerns municipalities with a population of at least 20,000 people, also reveals the average salary per capita. The data is based on 2016 tax returns, divided over the entire community, and covering those registered officially as residents on the padron, including children, students, the elderly and unemployed. The interactive map (above) shows the location of the 20 richest towns in blue, and 20 poorest towns in red. Madrid province dominates the wealthiest zones, with 11 municipalities, including the city of Madrid, appearing in the top 20. The other towns

are all suburbs in the north and north-west of the city. Barcelona province has three municipalities in the top 20: the main city, Sant Cugat del Vallés, a suburb to the northeast, and the coastal resort of Sitges. The Basque Country has five in the top 20; Getxo, San Sebastian, Mondragon, Zarautz and Vitoria-Gasteiz, while Galicia has one, named Olei-

ros, a commuter town outside A Coruña. Meanwhile, Níjar, in Almeria province, is poorest town (with a 20,000-plus population) in the whole of Spain with an average annual salary of €6,253 per head of population. But it is joined in the bottom 20 by 13 other Andalusian towns: three others in Almeria province, two each in Huel-

va, Seville and Malaga, a further three in Cadiz and one in Granada. The Canary Islands feature two towns among Spain’s poorest municipalities, Tenerife’s Arona and La Oliva, on La Palma. Four towns in Alicante, Almoradi, Mazarrón, Torrevieja and Calpe, are among the poorest, the latter two being popular with retired Brits.

Lifeguards save woman from Las Vistas horror

LAS VISTAS, in Los Cristianos, is known as one of the better beaches in South Tenerife. But events there were pretty grim on Tuesday, when lifeguards dragged a woman out from the surf to prevent her from drowning. Once she was rescued and carried to the beach, they immediately began with CPR. Fortunately, medical assistance was on the way after the emergency services sent an ambulance to the area. When it arrived, medics made a quick assessment before transferring the woman to hospital, where she was admitted, in a critical condition. The beach is recognised by many, especially the locals, for its dangerous undercurrents. Local Police, who were also at the scene, are investigating how the woman’s near-death could have occurred.

Furniture chain’s big plastic-waste scheme is far from a novelty

Judge orders TUI to compensate a couple for eight-hour fiasco

Inma Bermúdez’s bright-white items

A NORFOLK couple received £700 compensation from holiday company TUI, after a flight delay left them stranded at Tenerife South airport for eight hours.

BUDGET furniture chain Ikea has engaged the help of 1,500 fishermen in Spain, and a Comunidad Valencia-based interior designer, Inma Bermúdez, to fulfil a unique plan.

The former are paid to collect plastic waste from the sea and deliver it to the Ikea factories in Alicante and Valencia, and Inma turns it into brilliant household items, which will appeal to customers, even if it were not for the impending, environmental disaster of this non-biodegradable rubbish floating around in the oceans and rivers. Tablecloths, cushion covers, handbags, marine themes, as well as simple and modern designs, with geometric shapes, are all part of a new Ikea range, to be released

next February in Spain and Italy, and all created from refuse, fished from Spain’s shores. Eventually, the plastic-waste interior decorations, will work their way around the rest of the world, to every country in which Ikea has a presence. The main material used is Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET plastic, or PET Polymer), the chemical name for polyester, which is the most common type. The material, transparent, lightweight and hard-wearing, is used for packaging, drinks bottles, carrier-bags and even clothes. And for every kilo of it fished out of the sea, another nine kilos of other waste, including various types of plastic, plus metal, glass and rubber, are caught up in nets, according to the Seaqual association of fishermen, involved in the project. And, said Caroline Reid, head

of sustainable development at Ikea: “Sea rubbish could be the manufacturing material of the future.” The more companies use it to create products, the more it is removed from the sea. And, it is hoped, demand for the material will eventually outstrip the supply in the world’s oceans. Last October, Ikea joined the NextWave scheme, which involves corporations, charities and scientists collecting up plastic from the sea and using it to create consumer products. And, in addition to focusing on ocean waste as its main raw material, the company plans to scrap all singleuse plastics from its product range by next year. It is already under way in all its stores worldwide, and their ultimate aim, said Ms Reid, is for plastic and plastic waste to become a circular economy by 2030.

Anne and Derek Plackett, from West Runton, near Cromer, were left stranded, with no information, after their TUI flight to Norwich Airport was delayed. The couple were left feeling cheated after being told by TUI representatives that they could claim compensation, but were refused it when they returned home. Mrs Plackett said: “We got to the airport early and were told by a TUI rep that our pilot ‘had the vomits’. “We were to check-in and wait on the other side, so we presumed they would sort a replacement out fairly quickly. “Living in Norfolk, it’s nice to get away to warmer weather in the winter months, and flights from our local airport go to Tenerife. “The holiday had been very pleasant and enjoyable, until our arrival at the airport. “On the other side of checkin, we weren’t kept informed, and there were groups of very irate passengers, trying to get information from the airline staff. “The information board continued to say ‘delayed’, but there was no indication of how long we would be waiting.” After writing to the airline three times, and being ignored, the couple were

forced to turn to solicitors. Bott and Co took the case all the way to court, on behalf of the couple, and, in April, a judge at Luton County Court ordered TUI to pay the pair £352 each in compensation. A TUI UK spokesperson said: “We acknowledge the court’s judgement, and would like to apologise to Mr and Mrs Plackett for their experience.” Mrs Plackett said: “We really felt that TUI should have contingency plans in place. An airline of their size should have a local supply crew on stand-by, so that the inconvenience could be managed for passengers. “When we eventually got on the plane, the flight attendant told us we would get significant compensation for the delay. “Taking that advice, we wrote to TUI and presumed it would be a straight-forward process to get what we were entitled to.” But the couple’s claim was rejected, initially, by TUI, which cited extraordinary circumstances, despite a ruling allowing for passengers to claim for delays and cancellations, caused by crew sickness. Mrs Plackett said: “I was adamant about getting compensation because the disruption could have been avoided. I wrote to TUI a further two times, and sent emails to the CEO, but I didn’t have the courtesy of a response. “I was grateful to have Bott and Co there to help me. Getting compensation made up for the awful experience we had to endure, and we used the money on a family holiday with our daughter.”

This iconic tourist magnet has planning permission at last

IT has taken a staggering 137 years and €4.6m, but Barcelona’s iconic, as-yet-unfinished, Sagrada Familia basilica has finally been given planning permission. In a process that old hands in Spain might recognise, following a series of corruption cases, which led to a tightening of regulations, building of the Barcelona landmark started in 1882, which was a full three years before a construction permit was first requested. But things then seemed to go a little quiet when it came to the legalities. Building work carried on at its own leisurely pace, as finances allowed, and no-one worried too much about the paperwork. After all, it had been applied for… so “just carry on building until someone tells you stop”, was the message given, and one so familiar to Spanish people in the past. Over the years, the basilica grew and grew, eventually becoming the Catalan city’s biggest tourist attraction. Eventually, though, it was realised that although an

application had been made, no one saw any record of permission actually being given to construct the enormous church. It was a tricky situation, so Barcelona City Hall decided that the application had to be processed. After all, halting construction, or even ordering demolition, was hardly an option! The permit has now been given, but it will cost the foundation carrying on construction work millions of euros. It has agreed to pay the city council €4.6min fees for building permits, which will last until 2026, which should be enough to complete the present phase.

One of the central towers to be completed in this timescale will make La Sagrada Familia, Europe’s tallest religious structure at 172.5 metres. Antoni Gaudi, the original architect, envisioned 12 such towers, one for each disciple, but it is unlikely that they will all be finished. Around 4.5 million tourists pay up to €50 each for a guided tour of the edifice each year, with a further 20 million estimated to see it from the outside, according to the city council. At least they now know it is not yet another of the “illegal builds”, which are so common in Spain.

Dad’s 26 broken bones, after cars crunched him A BRITISH family have praised the Spanish health system after its “miracle” work on a father, who was hit by two cars while on holiday on the Costa Brava.

Dean Millers, 29, from Manchester, is still recovering in a Lloret de Mar hospital after the shock crash left him with 26 broken bones, including both legs, right elbow and nose. Mr Millers, who was holidaying with his partner, Emily, and their two young children, will have to learn to walk again after breaking his pelvis as well, in several places. “Dean is making massive progress,” wrote the family on a Just Giving page, which raised around €5,000 to help pay for family flights, back and forth. “He’s awake and talking, although he’s talking a little slower and is a bit confused… it’s a miracle he’s still with us.” In describing the horrific accident, his mother-in-law said the all-inclusive trip was the family’s first. “On the evening of 24th May, Dean decided to nip across the road to the shop

for juice and biscuits for the two children. “He was gone less than five minutes, when Emily and the rest of the hotel heard an almighty bang. Emily went out to the veranda and could see a lot of commotion outside. She also saw someone on the floor, yet couldn’t see who. But her gut instinct told her it was Dean. “Next thing she knew, the telephone in the room rang. It was reception, asking us to come down. “Dean was walking over a zebra crossing when he was hit by a car, which threw him in the air. Then, a second car drove over him. “The emergency services arrived quickly and gave Dean the best care possible, 100%, and we can’t thank them enough!” In a cruel twist of fate, Dean had money from his wallet and his trainers stolen, while medical staff attended to him. He was airlifted to hospital, with Emily following in a taxi. “The doctors told Emily that Dean was lucky to be alive,” added his mother-in-law. He was hoping to be driven home this week, after having another pelvis operation on Monday.

Ice-age wolf’s head dwarfs descendants SCIENTISTS have revealed the severed head of a huge Ice Age wolf, baring its teeth, which dates back more than 40,000 years.

The snarling beast, with its brain intact, was found preserved in permafrost, in the Yakutia region of Siberia. The head is almost 16ins long, nearly twice the size of the average head of its modern-day descendant, the Gray timber wolf, at 9.111ins. It was discovered above the Arctic Circle by local man Pavel Efimov last summer, near the remote Tirekhtyakh River. But the find has only now been disclosed. The reason for the wolf’s head being severed is, obviously, not known. But it’s unlikely to have been an ancient hunter’s trophy, since

it is believed that early man started to arrive in this part of northern Russia around 32,500 years ago. Russian scientist Dr Albert Protopopov said: “This is a unique discovery of the firstever remains of a fully-grown Pleistocene wolf, with its tissue preserved. “We will be comparing it with modern-day wolves to understand how the species has evolved, and to reconstruct its appearance!

The predator, with a thick, “mammoth-like” coat and impressive fangs, seems to have been larger than today’s Siberian wolves. Scientists at the Swedish Museum of Natural History will examine the Pleistocene predator’s DNA, says The Siberian Times. The discovery of the wolf was announced in Tokyo at an exhibition of frozen beasts’ remains, including woolly mammoths.

FOUR teachers from a Seville school have been served denuncias after, reportedly, being recorded ridiculing a girl with autism in their class.

The seven-year-old, who has not been named, suffers Pervasive Developmental Disorder with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Language Disorder (SLE) and epilepsy. Her parents began to notice her strange behaviour after she’d had two seizures in a short time, and began displaying signs of self-harm. Her behaviour, allegedly,

intensified during the school week, and then eased during weekends. When questioned, the teachers denied noticing any unusual behaviour. But, unconvinced, the parents sent their child to the class with a tape recorder in her bag. In six hours of recording, phrases such as, “the girl’s brain is broken” “she has already turned upsidedown”, “wash your hands, you filthy girl, I’m watching you play with snot”, or “in the asylum there was this profile in adults”. The case has been presented to the courts for further investigation.

‘Strong’ swimmer is drowned at sea

God won’t call on your mobile! A PRIEST in Galicia has been able to ban mobile-phone use in his church, and warn against it while driving, using a humorous message which has gone viral on social media. Xosé Manuel Lence, the vicar in A Ramallosa, a tied hamlet or parish of Nigrán, in the Pontevedra province, since 2013, became fed-up with constant ring tones during Holy Mass, so he put this sign on the church door: “On entering this church, it’s possible you’ll hear ‘God calling’.” “But it’s not likely he’ll be calling you on your mobile.” “Thank you for switching off your phone.”

“If you want to talk to God, enter, find a quiet corner and talk to him.” The final message was a serious nod to safe driving, which, said Father Lence, was “mainly in jest”. He wrote: “If you want to see God, send him a WhatsApp message while you’re driving.” Father Lence said it was “a friendly reminder”, and felt

that humour was the way to do it. But he was not expecting to see it doing the rounds on Twitter, gaining hundreds of “shares” and thousands of “likes”, as well as several hundred comments, nearly all positive. At least Twitter users gave Father Lence a ‘bravo’ for his incidental road-safety message, when sharing a photograph of the sign.

A BRITISH man, aged 53 and said to be an experienced swimmer, died after strong currents swept him out to sea.

He got into trouble at the Playa de El Palmar beach, near Cadiz, while he swam with his niece. A passing surfer managed to haul the niece to safety, before heading back and

bringing the man to shore on his board. Despite the best efforts of helpers, the man did not respond to CPR and was pronounced dead at the scene. Guardia Civil officers are investigating the drowning. A Foreign & Commonwealth Office spokesperson said: “Our staff are assisting the family of a British man, who has died in Cadiz, and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Jailbird Rato facing new corruption trial RODRIGO Rato, the former International Monetary Fund chief, still in prison, is facing a new corruption trial in Spain.

Imprisoned former IMF chief Rato now in more trouble

Madrid High Court has ordered Rato to stand trial alongside 12 others for deals, allegedly, offered by senior Bankia figures to public relations firms in return for suspected bribes of €2m. Those charged will have to put up sureties of close to

€4.5m, or having their assets seized. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of four years each, which, if found guilty, would double the time Rato must serve behind bars to 8½ years, plus a €2.5m fine. Authorities have already charged Rato over his role in listing Bankia on the stock market during his time in charge of the bank, from 2010 to 2012. Rato was head of Caja Madrid, which merged with

six other struggling banks to form Bankia in 2010. He was accused of falsifying Bankia accounts to trick investors, and hide substantial losses, at the height of the financial crisis. The false stock-market listing drew in many smaller and unsuspecting investors, but authorities soon had to step in to rescue the bank. Rato, who also served as Spain’s Economy Minister, must also await judgement on a separate tax-avoidance case against him.

ARE your UK pension funds safe from lifetime allowance (LTA) penalties? If you have several pensions, have been saving for many years, or have a generous company pension, you could be in the firing line for 25% or 55% tax, without realising it. The lifetime allowance is the UK government’s cap on how much you can hold in combined pension benefits, before paying extra tax. For the 2019/20 tax year, the LTA is £1.055 million. While this sounds high, the LTA does not just capture the ultra-wealthy. All UK pension benefits, outside the State Pension, are counted, including everything accumulated over a working lifetime. For “final salary” (defined benefit) pension schemes, the usual measure of value is 20x the annual income due; generally, this means pensions worth £52,750+ a year are currently affected. It is sensible to review your situation, even if you have already started drawing benefits. Taking appropriate action now could protect your retirement savings from unnecessary taxation. What are the penalties? Once total pension funds

14th June 2019 - 20th June 2019

Protect your pensions from the lifetime-allowance trap

exceed the allowance, extra tax is payable whenever you access your money - 55% for lump sums, 25% for income or transfers to an overseas pension - even if you are nonUK resident. Calculating how much of your allowance you have used is not always straightforward, so you should check your position with your provider or pension adviser. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will first test your allowance status when you start drawing your pension, then every time you access funds, and when you turn 75. If you die before 75, lump sums paid to your beneficiaries will also be subject to the test, and subsequent tax penalties. How can you protect your funds? You could secure a higher limit by applying for LTA “protection’” from HMRC, but this usually has strict conditions attached, so take guidance first. Expatriates have the option of transferring UK pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Besides limiting your exposure to LTA penalties, a QROPS can provide tax-efficiency, currency flexibility and estate-planning advantages. If you transfer UK pensions into a QROPS and your total benefits are under £1.055 million, you will not face LTA taxes on the transfer. However, make sure the QROPS is within the European Economic Area (EEA), otherwise you would still lose 25% through the “overseas transfer charge”.

Another option is taking UK pensions as cash, and reinvesting into a taxefficient, Spanish-compliant arrangement. In any case, before making decisions, take regulated, personalised advice to avoid pension scams, and determine your most-suitable approach. What if you are already over the limit? While you would trigger an immediate 25% LTA charge on a QROPS transfer, the funds become immune to further penalties. If you transferred, instead, to a UK scheme, like a Self-Invested Personal Pension

(SIPP), you could do so taxfree, but funds remain liable, whenever you take benefits and pass them on to heirs. If you are hovering under the threshold, consider acting sooner, rather than later, to prevent growth tipping you over the limit. Regardless of whether the LTA will affect you, with Brexit around the corner, now is a good time to review your pension options. Living in Spain, you should regularly check your financial planning, to make sure you take advantage of available opportunities, and

protect your wealth in the most suitable way for your particular circumstances. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Spain’s independent pharmacies lead way

AN annual study, conducted by the General Council of Official Associations of Pharmacies (CGCOF), shows that Spain has now surpassed Germany and France as having Europe’s largest, independent network of pharmacies. At the end of 2018 when the report was carried out, a total of 22,071 establishments were recorded in the “Annual Report of Collegiate and Pharmacies’. The figure showed a slight rise in previous years, with 50 new pharmacies opening, and 26 closures. Some 35.7% of the sites feature in provincial capitals, while the remaining 64.3% are situated in municipalities.

On average, each pharmacy has a client base of 2,117 customers, which shows Spain as having one of the best ratios of clientsper-location in Europe. In total, Spain has 74,043 registered pharmacists, of which 71.6% are female

and 45.5% are under the age of 44. Of the total number of pharmacists registered with the CGCOF, just 59,659 are active and working, with 51,959 (87.1%) working in community pharmacies.

The new mortgage law

By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

THE New Mortgage Law is scheduled to be introduced on Sunday (16th June), and, among other issues, the most important topics concern the following: 1. The floor clauses disappear. 2. Expenses and Stamp Duty will be paid by the bank, while the client pays for

the valuation and copies of Deeds (in case they are requested). 3. The sale of linked financial products is forbidden, although the combined financial ones are allowed. The bank must detail the price of each product separately. 4. Lower commissions for early repayment, or interest on late payments, as well as tougher conditions for customers who fail to pay their monthly instalments. 5. It is essential for a notary to certify that the bank has fulfilled its duty to inform and protect the client, and that the client understands what he/she is signing. 6. The notaries, licensed

by the Government, must receive specific training and pass an exam. 7. The solvency requirements for loan applicants are broadened and hardened. This law will apply to new mortgage credits, except some specific cases, which will also affect the existing ones. With this regulation, a European Directive of 2014 is being transposed to the Spanish legal system, which seeks to protect the banking client and establish transparency and conduct rules in the acquisition of real estate for residential use. At the end, it is all about ending the abusive practices of banking entities, many

of them denounced in the courts, which damage the reputation of the financial sector. A novel aspect is the essential intervention of a notary to protect the person who opens the mortgage. The client will now choose a notary to verify that the entity has complied with all the procedures established by law, and that the notary must ask the client if he/she understands all aspects, or has doubts If there are no doubts, the notary will draw up a certificate of certification, which must be attached to the loan deed (without the certificate, it cannot be signed). free of charge for the client. Although this rule existed in the “old” regulation, the new law wants the real intervention of the notary, helping the client to understand what he/she is signing. Punjab United Our Lives

Monday 17th June, BBC1, 19.30

Sunday 16th June, ITV1, 18.30 Punjab United is a small team with big dreams. But can manager and local businessman Chipie steer them to success? Football may be a matter of life and death to some, but for non-league side Punjab United it’s far more important than that. In this episode of Our Lives, the BBC follows the fortunes of a team of devoted players, who fight to win every match as if they are playing in front of 76,000 screaming fans at Old Trafford. But as an up-and-coming team, Punjab United are lucky to get a few dozen spectators to their ground in Gravesend, Kent. The team was started by local Sikh businessman Chipie, who is also their manager. Despite the name, the players are a mix of faiths and cultures, and Sikhs are a minority in the team. They have their own ground and some players are paid - but making their way in the fiercely competitive world of football is no easy task. The BBC follows Punjab United and Chipie as they are promoted to the Southern Counties East Football League. They expect to continue their upwards trajectory but are shocked as they end up in a punishing battle against relegation. From edge-of-the-box screamers to screaming rows in the dressing room Punjab United - Our Lives is proof that passion, dedication and home pride are not just traits of the big sides, but permeate every level of the game.

Hey Tracey!

Monday 17th June, ITV2, 22.00

In the first show of the series the celebrities taking part are ex Love Islander Georgia Steel, comedian Chris Ramsey and Geordie Shore’s Charlotte Crosby and playing on the opposite team is TV presenter Joe Swash, Apprentice star Luisa Zissman and comedian Luke Kempner. If our celebrities don’t know the answer to Joel’s unusual questions, they can say “Hey Tracey!” and enlist the help of his very own virtual assistant. But forget your high-end Silicon Valley artificial intelligence – Tracey was thrown together by some sixth formers in the late 90’s as part of their technology coursework… and she can usually be found tucking into a pie or painting her nails. Each time our celebs summon her help, Tracey can connect them with someone in the real world that might be able to help. Less phone-a-friend, more like comedy cold calling. And that means everyone from dog groomers to massage parlours, piano tuners to equine dentists, roadside burger vans to reptile houses. So, if our celebrities want to win big, they’d better make sure they say… “Hey Tracey!” Hey Tracey! is a Dr Pluto production for ITV. The show has been commissioned by Paul Mortimer, ITV’s Head of Digital Channels and Acquisitions and Peter Tierney, Assistant Commissioner, Entertainment, ITV. The executive producers are James Abadi and Sam Pollard.

The Family Brain Games Monday 17th June, BBC2, 20.00

The Family Brain Games is a new quiz format for BBC Two, and the ultimate test of collective, cross-generational intelligence, hosted by Dara Ó Briain. With new scientific research showing that our ability to work with others to solve problems is a key feature of modern intelligence, eight of Britain’s smartest families pool their respective IQs and go head to head in the ultimate quiz that will push their minds - and family dynamics - to the limits. Five rounds of brain teasing games, culminating in the final, all-or nothing round, Interrogation, have been created in association with Dr Adam Hampshire, a leading neuroscientist from Imperial College, London. Each game is designed to go beyond conventional tests of intelligence to truly challenge each family’s collective brainpower. Joining Dara to analyse proceedings is neuroscientist Dr Hannah Critchlow, on-hand to offer insights as the families are put through their cerebral paces. The cameras continue to roll behind the scenes as the families prepare for the showdown ahead at Discovery Park, their home for the next fortnight, which has been at the cutting edge of science research for decades. In the opening episode, we meet the high-achieving Ross family from London: writer and mum Katie, financial advisor dad Jonathan, and their two children, musical prodigy Amelia (14), who writes classical concerto in her spare time, and rock collector Alexander (12) who loves geology. Their opponents are the Latin-loving Griffiths family from Woking, including prison-educator and mum Anne, dad David (who’s also in education) and Latin scholars Will (16), and Ollie (13). Competitive youngsters Amelia and Ollie are hoping to lead their families to victory - but who will overcome brain freeze and inch closer to The Family Brain Games crown?

So Soufan again pushes the CIA’s ‘Alec Station’, where Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt) is encountering dissent on her hard-line stance from one of the analysts. Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard) is asked to mediate. Soufan’s other lead is a known prisoner and former bodyguard to ‘UBL’ [Usama bin Laden] - but can the FBI agent get access to him? Meanwhile teacher Heather (Ella Rae Peck) is likely to break up with the short-tempered Soufan unless he can bridge the growing gulf between them. In California, Mohamed Atta (Dhafer L’Abidine) steps up the training of Khalid al-Mihdhar (Tawfeek Barhom) and Nawaf al-Hazmi (Nebras Jamali) – including time on a professional flight simulator...

Equator From The Air BBC2, 19.00

In the final episode wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan completes his equatorial journey in Southeast Asia, where booming economies put increasing pressure on the natural world. Flying over Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, Gordon discovers this megacity is sinking. In Sumatra, drones help to manage a dangerous conflict between elephants and farmers. In Borneo, which has lost more than a third of its lush forests, Gordon searches for orangutans at night - and he finds that aerial tech offers hope for endangered Siamese crocodiles.

Alan Titchmarsh and the Love Your Garden Team head to Hythe to create a sensory garden for an inspirational little girl who has severely limited vision and, who will one day go completely blind. Four-year-old Isabelle Cooper has an extremely rare degenerative eye disease called LCA - lebors congenital amourosis. With the support of her loving family, she moves confidently around her indoor environment, but the outdoors remains a greater challenge. The one place she could safely learn, first hand, about the textures, smells and sounds of nature is sadly off limits. Her family back garden is an uninspiring rectangle of lumpy lawn surrounded by uneven and slippery paving. So the Love Your Garden team transform the bland plot into a safe family haven full of challenging fun for Isabelle as well as gorgeous plants and flowers that smell, sound, feel and even taste great!

As Viv Rook’s (Emma Thompson) regime tightens its grip, the entire Lyons family is forced to take action. Spurred on by both Muriel (Anne Reid) and Daniel (Russell Tovey), Rosie (Ruth Madeley) faces up to the troops surrounding her home, and takes radical action with Lincoln’s help. But when Bethany (Lydia West) reveals the shocking truth about her father, Edith (Jessica Hynes) and Celeste (T’Nia Miller) form a secret alliance to stop him. But Stephen’s (Rory Kinnear) in too deep, as the mysterious Erstwhile Policy turns deadly, forcing Edith and her girlfriend Fran (Sharon DuncanBewster) to embark on a reckless, dangerous mission, for Viktor’s (Maxim Baldry) sake. On a long, dark night, the challenge is clear: can one ordinary family actually change the world?

Episode one: Journalist Mobeen Azhar returns to Huddersfield to write a newspaper story about the death of Yassar Yaqub. What starts as a straightforward assignment takes an unexpected turn as Mobeen is faced with a wall of silence. Tim and Debs - A Tad Different! KEDDY’S Entertainment is pleased to welcome and introduce something “A Tad Different”. We enjoyed interviewing a new, and very talented, duo, here in our lovely, sunny Tenerife, featuring Tim Ayles playing the piano, and Deborah Hannah singing “One Piano, One Voice”.

Tim and Debs don’t use any backing tracks or drum machines, hence the name “A Tad Different”. They both moved here to realise their dreams of becoming full-time musicians and performers. Deb responded to a Facebook request for a singer, posted by Tim, in July 2018. “I saw the ad,” she said. “I was really encouraged to reply, by my husband Paul, and to start performing again. Tim and I hit it off straight away, because we both have the same zany sense of humour.” Deb moved to Tenerife 11 years ago, after her family had grown up, and started singing almost immediately, working as a waitress in a bar. A song springs to mind! Debs was always singing, becoming well known as the “Singing Waitress”, and progressed to performing with the entertainers and acts in the bars, as well as being a regular face on the karaoke stage. She has always loved music, and performed in front of her family and friends, putting on shows with her little sister Helen. Deb didn’t sing in public until her late twenties, and it was her friends who kick-started her career! “My friends entered me in a singing competition,” she said. “I remember being so scared that my feet wouldn’t move off the floor, in time to the music. I was like the proverbial rabbit, caught in the headlights!” Deb obviously impressed the judges, because she came second. She went on to win her next competition. The prize was a medal, some money, and the opportunity to go to Germany to sing for

the British troops. “Unfortunately, I could not go at the time, as I was raising my young family, and they were, and always will be, very important to me.” Shortly after this, Deb joined a male-female duo, which was great fun, but exhausting. She was working full-time as the deputy manager of a children’s nursery, and found that a day job, and working at night, was just too much of a commitment. She couldn’t continue, and began to do karaoke and open-mic nights, waiting and hoping for her big break. Deb began to think that she may never achieve her dream to be a full-time singer. “I always seemed to be in the right place, at the wrong time, or is it the wrong place at the right time!” Tim lived and worked in the UK for over 50 years for Xerox, and other, major international companies. He has travelled the world, extensively, working in Europe and US. He lived in Florida for

three years with his wife, also called Debs, and their three sons. Tim and his wife have been visiting Tenerife for many years, and decided, like many of us, that holidaying here simply wasn’t enough. They took the plunge to semi-retire and move here, in May 2018. Tim harboured his wish to fulfill his life-long dream of playing the piano, professionally. He comes from a musical family, and has been playing the piano from a very early age. Music has always been his passion. He has performed, regularly, in many pubs and clubs, in his hometown of Bedford. Interestingly, he was the chairman of a rugby club for 10 years, and has played at many rugby-club events, as well as private functions, parties and weddings. Tim’s and Debs’ musical tastes are wide and varied, and range from classical, to rock, ballads and blues. Being a big Beatles, Eagles and Elton John fan has

influenced Tim’s musical style. They continually challenge themselves to learn new songs, produce rich material, and keep the set list fresh, updated and varied. They aim to entertain their audiences with a wide selection of songs, encompassing all eras and musical tastes, ensuring that the audiences have fun. They both agree that it’s important to get the audience joining in, wherever possible, so they’re part of the show. Soon after meeting, Tim and Debs realised that there was a very strong connection between their personalities and musical tastes, which proved to be a great recipe for becoming a “Dynamic Duo”, and going out and entertaining. Their similar sense of humour, and ability to include the audience, makes them a great act for all hotels and venues. While they both take the music and performing seriously, they understand that they are there to

entertain an audience, and have fun themselves. Their professionalism, passion and joy for life were really apparent, during our interview. This is also keenly demonstrated in their performances. They simply love entertaining audiences! Keddy’s Entertainment finds conducting our artiste interviews so powerful and interesting. It is inspiring to hear how our talented entertainers realise and follow their dreams, at various stages in their lives. We are extremely fortunate with all our talented artistes, who serve and create fabulous memories. It helps to make this beautiful island a first-choice holiday destination, for many repeat visitors. It also acts as a magnet, for those who wish to settle here. You can follow Keddy’s Entertainment on Facebook @ keddysentertainmentpage, so why not give us a cheeky little like! Until next time, enjoy whatever you’re doing!

Was criminal Reds fan seen in Madrid before final win? KEVIN Parle, one of Britain’s most-wanted criminals, and on the run for 14 years, is believed to have attended the Champions League Final in Madrid on Saturday, 1st June.

An eye-witness took pictures of the alleged double murderer at Reina Sofia art museum, on the morning of the match. The staunch Liverpool fan, a towering 6ft 6in, who was wearing a red shirt and denim shorts, gave the witness “the dirtiest look ever”. He had been walking briskly around the gallery, stopping only at a painting by Salvador Dali. “I’m sure it was him. After I took a picture, he looked as though he were about to punch me, right there in the museum,” said the witness, who asked to remain anonymous. “He then walked off, really quickly, and you could clearly see how tall he was.” The sighting came after former Scotland Yard detective Peter Bleksley launched a fresh campaign to catch the alleged killer, who had disappeared for all those years. Bleksley said in April that Parle was a “huge Liverpool fan”, who was very likely to be in Madrid for the game. “There’s only one place for a Liverpool fan who can afford it on 1st June, and that’s Madrid,” said Bleksley, who worked for the Met Police’s undercover SO10 unit in the 1980s.

Argentine man who abused his daughter “That could well be him, but it’s impossible to say for certain. The pics need to be verified through a lab, with facial-recognition software.” The 38-year-old killer is Merseyside’s most-wanted man, allegedly involved in the murder of mum-ofthree Lucy Hargreaves, 22, who was shot while sleeping on a sofa in August 2005. He is also wanted in connection with the shooting of 16-year-old Toxteth lad Liam Kelly, who was gunned down in Liverpool in June 2004. The towering Liverpudlian is unmissable, and police believe he fled to the Costa Blanca after going on the run. He has been spotted in Javea and Torrevieja in recent years. “Parle’s shot a 16-year-old boy and a 22-year-old mother of three, yet is still on the run, seemingly in Spain,” said Bleksley. “It’s absolutely scandalous.”

AN Argentine man, aged 44, has been arrested by the authorities, following an international arrest warrant, because, allegedly, he sexually-abused his sixyear-old daughter. The attack was reported to have taken place in February 2018 in Cor-

doba, Argentina, and, subsequently, the suspect travelled to Spain when the arrest warrant was issued. His daughter suffered severely from the attack, and has, according to police authorities, been hugelyaffected, mentally. The case has now been passed to the Central Court of Instruction, No.4 of the National Court, for investigation and trial.

Third-time unlucky, for this cheeky thief

Suspect rammed police car before speeding off

A SUSPECTED thief’s luck ran out after he evaded arrest twice in the same week, because he was then nabbed in a taxi by police on the outskirts of Almeria city.

The incident happened shortly after a mugging in Aguadulce, believed to be his work. The search for him began in the early hours of 27th May, when he drove off to avoid being pulled over in an ID check, in the provincial capital. Officers, aware that he did not have a driving licence, chased after him, supported by other police units. After several minutes, they came across the vehicle, abandoned, and with clear signs that it must have been stolen. Four days later, officers spotted the suspect driving another vehicle.

To prevent him from disappearing again, they blocked the road with a police vehicle. But, ignoring police instructions to stop, he rammed the police car repeatedly, before shooting through at high speed, with complete disregard for the safety of pedestrians and other motorists. The following day a woman called police to report that her handbag had been snatched in Aguadulce, the mugger making off in a taxi in the direction of Almeria. Police, certain who was responsible for the crime, set up traffic controls at the city’s entrance. And, when officers stopped the taxi, they found the suspect, complete with smartphone and the €88 he had stolen in the Aguadulce mugging. The 39-year old will face a series of charges, among them, vehicle theft, criminal damage, and violent robbery.

Spain’s child poverty high in some families THE European Union Commission has called on Spain to improve its support for low-income families to tackle the “high rate” of child poverty. The Commission drew up a report on the situation facing disadvantaged Spanish families, which recommended investing in the welfare system and social housing to combat the issue. The Report on Spain found that the child poverty rate remained extremely high in Spain, despite falling in recent years. It also stated that Spanish

spending on the welfare system remained lower than other EU member states, and that the number of Spanish children dropping out of school early was “excessively high” as well, the report found. It also stated: “Efforts to reform the education system have stalled, and companies complain that they have trouble finding people with the necessary skills, especially in regard to information technology and communications.” The Children’s Platform NGO said it welcomed the report and its recommendations, which also including creating a High Commissioner for fighting child poverty.

Spanish tourist may be out of his depth!

I’ve paid my tax debts, Shakira assures judges

COLOMBIAN singer Shakira, alleged to have avoided paying €14.5m in taxes by claiming she was a resident of the Bahamas when she actually lived in Catalonia, has appeared in court to give evidence. The 42-year-old, who told Barcelona judges that she was up-to-date with her taxes, said she had given her full co-operation to the investigation. Shakira “officially” became tax resident in Spain in 2015, moving her residency from the Bahamas. She lives in Barcelona with footballer Gerard Piqué and their two sons. However, the Spanish taxman believes she should have declared a change in residency sooner, saying that, from 2012 to 2014, she was living in Catalonia and should have paid tax on her worldwide income

for that period. In February, El Periodico newspaper reported that the singer had paid €14.5m to settle the debt, and Shakira’s PR company said she had appeared in court “to help clarify the facts over her tax situation in Spain”. It added: “As soon as she learned how much she owed the Spanish tax authorities, and before a complaint was filed, Shakira paid the full amount, as well as providing the tax office with exhaustive information. “For this reason, there is currently no debt whatsoever.”

OFFICIALS in Rome have recently updated the capital city’s public action laws, concerning improper behaviour. And these new rules might have caught out Spanish tourist Remi Sanz, who was on a stag-do at the popular Italian tourist destination, with friends. He dressed up as a Roman Centurion to mark the trip, complete with plastic sword,

fake armour and helmet, and was enjoying the sights of the city around the popular Trevi Fountain. But he may well have broken a new regulation. Local authorities have rewritten the legislative laws to update them with modern culture, to help clamp down on disruptive and uncouth behaviour. As well as fancy dress, other infractions have been updated to include eating messily and leaving litter, dragging wheeled

suitcases down historical stairs, walking around barechested, as well as pub crawls, public singing and drunks. It also includes improper use of public water fountains for example, wrapping your lips around the nozzle when drinking. Marco Cardilli, Deputy Chief of Staff and Security Delegate on Rome’s City Council said: “Old regulations have been updated to the needs of a modern society.”

Javier’s death spells the demise of village

28 hurt as fairground ride left in two pieces

THE death of a young person is always a tragedy. But in the case of 25-year-old Javier García, it is twice as mournful.

That’s because Javier was the last young man remaining, actually willing to live and work in the Asturian municipality of Yernes y Tameza. People there are aware that the village is dying because it has Spain’s lowest birth rate, and the last child born there was a decade ago. But he and his family moved away. Spanish newspaper El Mundo reported that García, the only man under the age of 50 working in the township, drove his tractor along the steep road connecting the two biggest villages of the municipality, Yernes and Villabre. For reasons unknown, the tractor, towing a heavy load of tiles, overturned and crushed him. The emergency medical helicopter, the only possible assistance in the isolated mountainous region, was 70 kilometres away in

Gozon, rescuing a woman who had been trapped on a beach. Mayor Manuel Tamargo and several neighbours, who had waved farewell to him just moments before, as he started his journey, tried to help García. But their efforts were in vain, as they awaited the helicopter’s arrival, because tragic García died at the scene. Former Mayor Carlos Fernandez, told El Mundo: “It’s incredible, terrible; the

only young man who worked in the town and wanted to live here.” True, his brother still lives in Yernes y Tameza, but he is employed by a neighbouring council. As the crow flies, it is not far from the busy town of Oviedo, but it’s 1,000 metres above sea level, in inaccessible terrain, and has a mere 140 registered inhabitants. Only three children have been born there so far this century, and just one, aged 13, remains in the area.

A FAIRGROUND ride was transformed into a horror scene when it split in two, leaving 28 young revellers lying injured among the wreckage last Sunday. Most seriously hurt was a 13-year-old girl, who was taken to hospital with head injuries after the incident, at a fair in La Rinconada, Sevilla. One of four boys, aged between 12 and 14, were kept in hospital, one in intensive care, while another

four were treated for broken bones. A spinning disc attraction appeared to have fallen apart, and video evidence recorded shouts of “stop it, stop it” as the ride fell to pieces. The ride operator is believed to have hit the emergency stop button, but it failed to work initially. Yet the ride was fully licensed and had passed safety inspections, according to the Town Tall. One fair worker said: “It’s a disaster! There are 28 people hurt, and it could have been worse.”

Kids bugged by holiday sickness

THREE British children, from two families, are in hospital after catching a suspected sickness bug in a fivestar Menorca resort. Louise Hunter, 36, from St Helens, Merseyside, woke up after vomiting in her sleep, to find her daughters suffering diarrhoea. She claimed both children were taken to the local hospital and given medication during their €2,241-plus, all-inclusive holiday. And 33-year-old Dorset

mum Jade Fullbrook, who said that she and her 10-year-old were left with acute gastroenteritis a few days later, added: “The sickness bug completely ruined our all-inclusive holiday.” A UK spokesperson for TUI said: “We are very sorry to hear of the customers’ experiences on their holiday. We’d like to reassure customers that we regularly audit all of our hotels in respect of health and safety, including hygiene.” Both families are now seeking compensation.

Part-time work may spark full-time jobs

A RECORD 604,000 jobs could be created throughout Spain this summer, predict experts. And research company Randstad believes that some 140,000 of those, around 23%, will be converted into full-time appointments at the end. Andalucia will benefit the most, the influx of tourists creating 28,420 permanent posts, followed by Catalunya with 20,040, Valencia with 14,950 and Madrid with 14,810. Compared with last year’s data, Aragon is the fastestgrowing region in terms of permanent jobs, coming from the summer season, with an 8.8% increase, followed by Castilla-La Mancha (8.7%) and Galicia (8%). Catalunya follows on 7.6%, then Madrid (7.2%) and Murcia (6.7%), all above

the 6.5% national average. The communities with more moderate growth, against last year’s figures, will be Cantabria (6.3%), Valencia and the Canaries (both with 6.2%), Andalucia (6%), Asturias (5.9%), Extremadura and the Basque Country (both with 5.5%) and La Rioja (5.3%). Navarra (4.4%), Castilla y León (4.2%) and the Balearics (2.5%), will see the slowest permanent job-growth, yearon-year. Forecasts now predict that at least 7.3 million tourists will visit the Costa del Sol alone this summer, and that 2019 will smash all previous records, with 13 million visitors. The British continue to be the biggest foreign group visiting Spain, making the UK market essential to Spain’s tourism industry, as well as aiding job creation.

The Amigos de Gillian Banks Summer Ball

Fund-raising bonanza, and a fun night for all THE Amigos de Gillian Banks Summer Ball went off with a resounding bang last Friday evening at El Campesino Restuarante, in Aldea Blanca.

The evening began with drinks on arrival, and Miguel Angel on the pianoaccordion, serenading the guests with romantic, Italian music, as they perused the merchandise on sale, or had their photos taken by Mark Thornton. Fantastic weather meant the outside “holding” area for guests worked perfectly, before they were shown into the “cave” restaurant for the official start. Vicente sang on stage, while guests found their seats, and classical Andrea Bocelli arias filled the room. Guests chatted

and socialised, as willing hands promoted the raffle and features of the evening. Gillian Banks then welcomed everyone, thanking them for their support. A room of nearly 200 people were in for a fantastic evening of entertainment, raising money for Tenerife’s under-privileged children and El Valito and Guaidyl day-centres. A four-course dinner was served, with wine and other drinks, and Nicola Cutts continued the singing to keep the party spirit on track. People within the room included the Rotary Club Tenerife Sur, as a gold sponsor, as well as the Wine Bar and Terrace, and Beauty Within, from Los Gigantes, as silver sponsors, and Ibex insurance as a bronze sponsor. Santa Maria Estate Agency sponsored the evening and gave all their tickets away,

enabling people who have helped the charity over the years to attend. A superb array of raffle prizes had been donated, and various companies were extremely supportive throughout the evening, both in attendance and donations. Jay Francis performed as George Michael, after Nick Page had performed his unforgettable “Bring Him Home” for an adoring crowd. And party girl Tanya Tevaro got everyone dancing to finish the evening on a high. The night raised €5,825 for the children, so a mammoth thank-you goes out to everyone who contributed in whatever way they could. Look out for our Gillian Banks’ Gala Dinner, on 2nd November, in partnership with Rotary Club Tenerife Sur… definitely an evening not to be missed!

K9 Animal News A FEW weeks ago, one of our staff arrived to start work for the day, and noticed two big boxes left outside the kennels. From experience, she knew this was never good news.

She opened the boxes and discovered ten very young puppies inside. Five in each box. They were about six weeks old, and, as you can imagine, were very small and very cute. They were scared and nervous, and had no idea what was going on. Their first few days at K9 were very daunting, but, after some weeks of love and affection from us and our volunteers, they started to come out of their shells. The adoptions started to happen for our little ones, with five of them having gone to their forever homes. What great news this is! So there are five little puppies left. There are two male and three females, and they are looking for their chance to be loved, and welcomed into their new families. They love to play and have fun, and getting attention from our volunteers. When they are picked up for a cuddle they melt into your arms, and this melts your heart.

Mr Chen - food fused together, perfectly!

By Paul Waller

JUST opposite and down a touch from the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, just down from the main bus station near the Hotel Sol Princess, is this very popular restaurant, Mr Chen, which has built up its superb reputation on its own merits and hard work.

The great idea is that you can eat as much as you like for one price (€12.50), with the added bonus that it is all cooked freshly to order, and brought to your table. With two relaxing areas available to sit inside or out, undercover, this restaurant feels as is meant to feel, like a little family business, with food that is fresh and flavoursome. Helen the owner and Alex the manager are very welcoming, speaking in English and Spanish, enabling you to get the most from the Chen family-restaurant experience. This is a fusion restaurant, and has so many inspirations from around the world infused into the world of Chinese food, to make you want to come back for more and more. So where did we start? It had to be steamed meat dumplings, vegetable spring rolls and crispy duck with pancakes, which were so good we ordered, instantly, another two portions. You can never have enough crispy duck and pancakes! We also tried the tuna-

and-salmon tartare. There are so many starters to choose from, yo can easily find something you like. We also went for our hosts’ recommendation of their award-winning dish, Crazy King Prawns, wrapped in Greek, angel-hair pastry, and served with a sweetand-sour mango sauce. Oh wow! What a dish! We ordered another one. We also selected the smoked Canarian cheese in crispy, Chinese, filo pastry, with a palm-tree honey, and a wonderful tempura of King prawns, which were huge and very tasty. We also tried the crispy squid, chicken wings, and one of my favourite dishes, Grilled Xiao Long Bao, which are like very light bread rolls, with a pork filling. We then, of course, had to order another crispy duck and pancakes, before looking at the main courses: Prawn Vermicelli, Crispy Chicken and Sweet Chili, Sweet-and-Sour Chicken Balls, Fried Rice Mr Chen style, and Iberic Secret Mr Chen. You will have to order that yourself, to

see what the secret is! The nice thing about the portions is they are not overwhelming, but are a perfect tapas size, so you get to try different dishes, and look forward to returning really soon to taste the rest. Looking around the place, I could see that many customers were repeat clients, ordering their favourites. Booking a table is definitely recommended. If you want more, you just pick up the menu and order it! But there is one rule - you must eat what you order, or some of it. If you order too much, you may be charged. I think it is a great policy, to cut down on wastage. Then came the desserts, also ordered via the waiting staff, then brought to your table. As you may have guessed, we were pretty full up, but we did manage to fit in pineapple fritters and vanilla ice cream, a chocolate brownie and a fresh-fruit platter. We finished off the meal with a coffee and a jasmine tea, and a one-for-the-road tipple. All this food for only €12.50 per person (under 8s €6.50). It’s fantastic value for money. Mr Chen is open from midday until 11pm, six days a week, and from 6pm on a Wednesday. Eat as much freshlycooked food as you want, chosen from a well-thought-out menu, all brought to your table with a smile. So if you haven’t yet visited Mr Chen, the question has got to be: why not? Book a table now on 922 793 957, or look on Trip Advisor or their Facebook page: Mr Chen Carta Libra. You definitely will be suitably impressed!

The thirst-quenching watermelon THE watermelon is a large, sweet fruit, originally from southern Africa. It’s related to the cantaloupe, zucchini, pumpkin and cucumber.

It is packed with water and nutrients, contains very few calories, and is exceptionally refreshing. This juicy melon has several health benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved insulin sensitivity, and reduced muscle soreness. While watermelons are predominantly eaten fresh, they can also be frozen, made into juice, or added to smoothies. Nutrition facts Watermelon consists mostly of water (91%) and carbs (7.5%). It provides almost no protein or fat, and is very low in calories. Carbs Watermelon contains 12g of carbs per cup (152g). The carbs are mostly simple sugars, such as glucose, fructose and sucrose. It also provides a small amount of fibre. Howev-

er, each serving of watermelon is relatively low in carbs, so eating it should not have a major effect on blood-sugar levels. Fibre Watermelon is a poor source of fibre, providing only 0.4g per 2/3 cup (100g). Eating high amounts of fructose can cause unpleasant digestive symptoms in individuals who cannot fully digest them, such as those with fructose malabsorption. Vitamins and minerals Watermelon is a good source of Vitamin C, and a decent source of several other vitamins and minerals. *Vitamin C: This antioxidant is essential for skin, health and immune function *Potassium: This mineral is important for blood-pressure control and heart health *Copper: This mineral is most abundant in plant foods, and often lacking in the Western diet *Vitamin B5: Also known as pantothenic acid, this vitamin is found in almost all foods, to some extent *Vitamin A: Watermelon contains beta carotene, which

your body can turn into Vitamin A Other plant compounds Watermelon is a poor source of antioxidants, compared with other fruits. However, it’s rich in the amino acid citrulline and the antioxidant lycopene, which have numerous benefits for health. Citrulline Watermelon is the richest known dietary source of the amino acid citrulline. The highest amount is found in the white rind that surrounds the flesh. In your body, citrulline is transformed into the essential amino acid, arginine.

Both citrulline and arginine play an important role in the synthesis of nitric oxide, which helps lower blood pressure, by dilating and relaxing your blood vessels. Arginine is also important for many organs, such as your lungs, kidneys and liver, and immune and reproductive systems, and has been shown to facilitate wound healing. Studies note that watermelon juice is a good source of citrulline, and can increase blood levels of both citrulline and arginine, considerably. Lycopene Watermelon is the best known

fresh source of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant, responsible for its red colour. In fact, fresh watermelon is a better source of lycopene than tomatoes. Human studies show that fresh watermelon juice is effective at raising blood levels of both lycopene and beta carotene. Your body uses lycopene, to some extent, to form beta carotene, which is then converted into Vitamin A. What’s more, it’s sweet, delicious and packed with water, making it excellent for maintaining good hydration.

Microwaves no longer the heart of the home

your food have been studied for some time, and people exposed to radiation for just three minutes at 2.4Ghz can experience severe reactions in heart changes and altered heart-rate variations, including an alarm response to stress. This is also called electrohypersensitivity (EHS), or rapid ageing syndrome. It has been studied for multiple decades, and this response includes heart palpitations, clumping of red blood cells, and fluctuations of the parasympathetic nervous system, typical of a fight-orflight response.

Many people, over the years, have claimed that microwave ovens do not produce any immediate biological effects, because the ordinary household level is so far below the government guidelines. However, in the modern day world, there are more sources of environmental radiation like electromagnetic devices, WiFi routers, laptops and mobiles. This is the first study that documents immediate and dramatic changes in both heart rate and heartrate variability, caused by an approved device that

generates microwaves at levels well below (0.3%) federal guidelines in both Canada and the United States. Just like chemotherapy, the Nazi’s invented microwave ovens during World War II. They created a device to provide mobile food support for their troops, when they invaded the Soviet Union. Russia later banned the ovens when they worked out how dangerous they were, but, of course, not the US. Dr. Hans Ulrich Hertel was one of the first food scientists to study the effects of microwaves on the blood and physiology of human beings. He and his biochemistry expert partners concluded that microwaves resulted in negative health effects. They reported that they can cause higher cholesterol levels, decreased numbers of red blood cells, decreased haemoglobin levels, and decreased numbers of leukocytes (white blood cells). The extra fifteen minutes in the oven might be the better idea, in order to avoid major health complications. You’re not just nuking your food,

lights that might flash up on the dashboard. But they needn't be alarming. With a little help and understanding, you may be able to save yourself money, and avoid potential, severe damage to your car, if you take notice of its warnings. If a warning light appears (or fails to extinguish after you've started the engine), depending on the light you should either stop, or get the error fixed, as soon as possible. If you know what the light means, and act quickly, you could save time and money. Oil pressure warning light This light, perhaps the most common and well known, should illuminate when the ignition is switched on, and go out once the engine starts. If the light stays on after starting, or illuminates during a journey, stop immediately, switch off the engine, and check the engine-oil level. Top up straight away if the level is low. If the warning lamp illuminates, even though the oil level is correct, do not start the engine, and contact your mechanic or garage, immediately. An easy way to

do this is to take a photo of your dashboard with the light clearly showing, and send it to your mechanic or garage. Ask for advice as to whether it is safe to continue your journey with caution, or whether the car should be sent to the garage on a grúa. Battery charge warning light This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on, and should go out as soon as the engine starts. If it does not illuminate at all, or if it illuminates while driving, your battery is not being charged, so the most likely problem is that there is a fault with your charging system. This may be due to one of the following: ·a loose battery or starter terminals ·a broken or loose alternator drive belt ·an alternator failure If the alternator belt is broken, it must be replaced before you restart the engine. The coolant system may rely on this belt, and its failure could cause the engine to overheat and be damaged. Move the car, immediately, to a safe location, and

turn off the engine. Do not restart the engine until you have sought professional assistance. Brake system warning light This light will remain illuminated when the handbrake is in use. Illumination after releasing the handbrake may indicate a low brake-fluid level. You may need to top up the fluid. As brakes wear, the fluid level will slowly drop, so regular checks are important. If you are not able to check this yourself, go to your garage and ask them to do it for you. This may be free of charge, but it would routinely be done at a service, which is something to bear in mind. If the brake fluid is too low, and stopping distance is distinctly longer than usual, one of the two, hydraulic, brake circuits may have failed. If the light remains illuminated, even though the brake fluid level is correct, this may indicate a sensor fault. Take your car to a dealer or garage that has faultfinding equipment. Engine warning light This light illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should go

IF you are health conscious, you probably won’t use a microwave too often. Many people have moved away from the convenience of a microwave oven, because of the dangerous health risks they pose.

Microwave ovens not only nuke our food and destroy any nutritional value that it has, but they also having a seriously-negative effect on your heart. Typical microwave frequency radiation from the microwave in an average American kitchen emits more than enough radiation to affect your heart rate and heart-rate variability. Just 2.4 GHz can cause immediate and drastic changes to your heart. The shocking part is that 2.4Ghz is the average frequency given out by your WiFi router, and microwave ovens. The effects of microwaving

WE have covered this subject before, but, because of the current, financial crisis that many find themselves in, people are looking to save money, wherever possible.

It seems prudent to reiterate how important the warning lights are on your car. From time to time, we all see these lights, but it is amazing how many people ignore them, only to find that, shortly after, their car stops, won't start or loses all power. This is often because of the lack of maintenance, or, in some cases, ignoring the warning lights. As cars have become more and more sophisticated, the number of possible faults that can arise has grown significantly, along with the number of different warning

you’re nuking your blood and brain, and disturbing your heart rate. Many microwaveable foods are processed and in packaging which contains an assortment of chemicals. Chemicals found in many of these containers include benzene, toluene, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), xylene and dioxins (known carcinogens). At high temperatures, it is likely that chemicals can absorb into the food, and intake of these chemicals presents a high health risk. What’s more, the chemicals in the food are also a cause for concern. Perhaps one of the most dangerous contaminants in microwavable food is BPA. A watchdog report found that this oestrogen-like plastic leaked from all packaging, into the food being tested. BPA disrupts normal hormone activity. Infertility, low-libido, cardiac disease, mental disorders, allergies, high blood pressure and weight gain have all been linked to BPA exposure. The simple fact is, when you use a microwave, you’re getting a lot more than the food you eat.

out as soon as the engine starts. If it illuminates with the engine running, it indicates a malfunction with the engine management system. Have this checked as soon as possible. If the light turns to red, or illuminates in conjunction with the STOP light, stop the vehicle and seek assistance. ABS warning light When the ignition is switched on, the light illuminates briefly to confirm that the system is operational. If it illuminates when driving, it indicates a fault. Have this checked. Normal braking (without ABS) will generally be maintained, and many cars will be safe to drive on, but some will not. If in doubt, check with your mechanic, or stop driving the car and have it checked. Brake system and ABS warning lights If both warning lights illuminate at the same time when driving, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. Reduce vehicle speed gradually, and immediately move the vehicle to a safe position. Use the brakes with great care, and don't step on the brake pedal, abruptly.

CD Tenerife

Friendly finale another home win for safe CDT TENERIFE’S final match of the season saw the visit of Zaragoza to the Heliodoro, in a clash that felt like a friendly, with lots of open play and chances… more than those displayed in a typical Second Division clash. To prove the point, there were zero red cards, one yellow card, and 42 shots, of which 16 were on target. There was even a final tribute to Jorge Sáenz and Raúl Cámara, who waved goodbye to the blanquiazul faithful. The first half was typical of a pre-season friendly, or, in this case, post-season, taking into account how recently their Second Division place was assured. With nothing at stake, except a position or two in the final league standings, the players showed their desire to please. But they lacked the usual intensity expected in Second Division matches. All this resulted in frequent attacks and chances on goal, and it also meant plenty of work for the goalkeepers. The first to earn his money was Tenerife’s substitute keeper Angel Galván, who was involved in a double save within three minutes, after a closerange shot by Marc Gual, and a clearance off the line by Alberto Jiménez. It was not the only outstanding action from Galván, who made half-a-dozen stops, including a remarkable shot from Pombo after 15 minutes. At this point, Zaragoza had dominated the match and keeper Ratón had hardly touched the ball. But when needed, he rose to the challenge, saving a header by a leaping Jorge from a Tenerife corner in the 27th minute. That action was the turning point in a clash that was balanced from then on. Ratón

was needed 10 minutes later when Nano tried to squeeze one in on the near post from 15 yards, and he managed to keep it out. The first half ended with 20 shots, 10 of them on target, and the second half did not disappoint, either, with one difference: Tenerife scored on their first attack. Milla took a corner, Jorge headed towards goal, and Nano nodded the ball in from close range, leaving Ratón no chance. From then on, both teams had some good chances. Zaragoza’s Pep Biel hit the post with an excellent free-kick from 25 yards after 65 minutes, Tenerife had a penalty appeal for handball turned down 13 minutes later, and Nano had a chance for a second goal after a good solo run. At the end, there was an emotional farewell to Raúl

Cámara, an honest player who could make mistakes, but would never let you down. He was joined on the pitch by his children for a presentation from the club, while fans had chance to say thank-you to the players for keeping them in the Liga 123. The players were also able to thank the fans for their continued support. At the end of a tough campaign, CDT finally finished 16th in the table, five points clear of relegation, after their safety was secured with two wins and a draw in their last three matches. Rayo Majadahonda joined Gimnàstic and Córdoba in being relegated, and bankrupt Reus, of course, finished bottom with zero points. At the top of the table, Osasuna were promoted as champions, and Granada, who finished second, also moved up to the top league. The play-off positions were filled by Malaga, Albacete, RCD Mallorca and Deportivo, who all face a busy couple of weeks to fight for that third promotion place, into La Liga. Ultimately, this season will be seen as a failure from Tenerife’s point of view, and new coach Sampedro needs to rebuild, bring in new players, and restructure the club to make them competitive next season. But this will not be easy. Financial restraints and the new salary caps come into force, so it

will be difficult to attract players to the club. Yet, as fans, that’s what we

want to see, along with stability, passion… oh, and a new board of directors!

International team can’t scare League champions AS another season begins, a trulyinternational team joined in, with players of six nationalities and genders pitted against their own Pas O Nadas A team. But it was same-again by the league champions, as Luc hit a 180, and Daddy Cool’s 117 finish started their new campaign with a 7-1 victory. The same result was recorded by Suters 20:30 Crew, who will be pushing for the title, with Steve hitting a maximum, as they cruised past Sandys.

Gaffer’s # Team Hollywood welcomed newly-promoted The Loch-In Bullseyes, and showed their class by restricting the visitors to just two legs, although better finishing from the Bullseyes could have won them more. Emerald B found themselves 4-0 down in their first top-flight match, but they recovered to take a couple of games, before Barry hit a 99 check-out, to clinch a 6-2 win. Scooters & Chevys A hosted Sandys Bookie Boys, ending the evening with just a single

point from Anna, who beat the experienced Ramon. But his team-mates responded by taking the other seven games. Palms Sports Bar and Emerald Lounge showed their class as both demolished their opponents 8-0, Ourplace Playgirls and Clouseau’s being the unfortunate victims. Newcomers, but well-known players, formed Pink Elephant, who had a victorious start as they beat Scooters & Chevys B 6-2. And another new team, The Club House, with familiar names and inspired by Mark’s 180, beat Ourplace Breakaways 6-2. But, despite the scoreline, the latter had a brilliant night. Yet another new team, Club Activo, got off to a winning start, as they travelled to Sundowners and came home with a 5-3 success. Naughty Nautas were looking for a good start to the season, but, sadly, they were pipped 5-3 by Pas O Nadas. And, saving the best until last, Picasso’s overcame Marilyns 5-3, thanks to the highest check-out in the division so far, as Chairman Chas hit a bull to finish. It was a great start to the new season for all players, venues and spectators, so let’s keep it going! For more info, results etc, go to our facebook page Oasis FM Darts League.
