Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.5% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. Evil brutes dodge officers by hopping over rooftops

LOCAL Police officers, since Wednesday afternoon, have been searching for three individuals who attacked a 73-year-old, viciously, in her Calle Febles Campos home, in the Salamanca area of Santa Cruz. The horrific incident happened at around 11am, while she was attending to her convalescing husband, and, as a result of their brutality, she had to be admitted to hospital. According to sources, the nasty trio were armed with knives, and used them to enter the premises, which they had targeted, specifically, to steal valuable items and money. It is not known whether the three men were aware of the elderly couple being at home, but the woman was subjected to a vicious attack. Someone must have called the police, because they could be heard, arriving at the scene. But the thieves were aware of their presence and, say officers, they fled

the area by jumping from rooftop to rooftop. A police search party began immediately, with help from the special security unit Unipol. Together, they began to close the roads in the vicinity, which created a commotion with local residents. But their search was in vain, although they did find the knives, and the tools they used to break into the home. Police later discovered, via a report to the authorities by a local householder, that someone had been inside her home. Officers feel the three broke into an empty property, some streets away, to lie low for a while. Local Police are now working with colleagues from the National Police, and, because of the seriousness of the crime, they are continuing to hunt down the cowardly trio. Meanwhile, their victim, an elderly pensioner, is still receiving treatment in hospital.

Guardia officers rescue dying woman on beach OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil almost certainly saved the life of a swimmer, who was close to dying after her heart stopped on La Nea beach, in the El Rosario municipality. The incident happened last Friday at around 11am, and the officers realised that the woman was in deep trouble after being dragged out of the water by a male swimmer. The Guardia men were actually on a rescue exercise inside a barranco, near the beach, when they heard the man’s shouts for help. They rushed over to where they were, and soon checked for the woman’s vital signs. It was obvious that she had been on the verge of drowning, and that she had suffered a heart attack, so the officers began with CPR, while fellow agents informed the emergency services. The pair continued with

CPR while they awaited the ambulance medics, and 10 minutes had passed before they confirmed that the woman’s lungs were beginning to fill up with air. They positioned the woman on her side, which was when, slowly, she regained consciousness. The Guardia officers covered the woman in a thermal blanket until her vital signs became more or less normal, and they continued to accompany her until the ambulance arrived.

Laser test should help clear old space debris The junk is considered capable of causing damage to satellites, as well as to the International Space Station, and the ESA says the problem is increasing, with collisions becoming impossible to prevent, or even to attempt to control. The laser is housed in the Observatory at Izaña, in a building in The Optical Ground Station (OGS). The OGS, installed in the Teide observatory, 2,400 metres above sea level, was built as part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) longterm efforts for research in the field of inter-satellite, optical communications. The original purpose of the station, equipped with a telescope (1m aperture), was to perform the in-orbit test of laser telecommunications terminals, on board satellites in Low Earth Orbit and Geostationary Orbit. The ESA survey of Space Debris in the Geostationary Orbit and the Geostationary Transfer Orbit, since 2001, has also being carried out with a devoted, wide-field camera,

attached to the RitcheyChretien focus. Also, around one-third of the observing time is used for basic, astronomical research from ESA and IAC science teams, with dedicated instruments, either in the coudé or in the RitcheyChretien foci. The Optical Ground Station was inaugurated in 1995. The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, which took part in the integration of the station instruments, has since been in charge of the station operation. Since January 2001, ESAESOC has been carrying out periodic survey campaigns of the space debris in GEO and GTO. This is ESA’s contribution to the worldwide, common efforts for this task, with NASA and NASDA (National Aerospace and Defence Agency of

Japan). The ESA, preparing a laser telescope to track space junk, is planning to fire it at the debris considered most likely to foster problems, causing it to begin a descent through the atmosphere, where it will burn up and disintegrate. Rafael Rebolo, director of the Canarian Astrophysics Institute, which incorporates the ESA facility within the Observatory, said: “The new telescope is a prototype experiment to test that the laser can achieve linear communication with a relatively small piece of rubbish (under 10cm), and get it to move and be pulverised in the atmosphere.” Rebolo hopes the facility will be operational within four years, serving as a basis for other lasers to be used, consistently, to clear the areas most populated by space junk.

Supermarket man was shopping, for trolleys!

NATIONAL Police in Arrecife, Lanzarote, have arrested two men, aged 33 and 52, charging one with stealing supermarket trolleys and selling them to the other person, who runs a scrap-metal company. The latter was charged with receiving and storing the

trolleys, while one of the pair already had several charges against him for similar crimes. An investigation began after a supermarket chain reported the theft of 95 trolleys, the total cost adding up to €10,260. The boss of the supermarket chain reported, initially,

that he had spotted several shopping trolleys parked up outside the scrap-metal company’s premises. Officers continued their investigation and retrieved nine trolleys from the reported 95 stolen. The officers then arrested the thief, and the scrap-metal dealer.

Re-elected Adeje Mayor still fights for prosperity

JOSE Miguel Rodríguez Fraga has been re-elected Adeje Mayor, following the constitution of the borough’s new council. The socialist candidate received 14 votes for an overall majority.

The new Adeje Council has 14 socialist members: four from the Coalición Canarias, two from Unidas PodemosIU, and one from the Partido Popular. All 21 were present to take office last Saturday in a ceremony held in the Convento de San Francisco, in front of over 100 members of the Adeje public. The Mayor, addressing the assembly once he had been re-elected, said: “I am committed to the promise made during the election campaign to continue the project of social harmony, and a prosperous future for the borough.” Of the vote he had received from the local electorate, he said: “It was both an honour

and a challenge, and we cannot let you down. This town deserves the best, and we will strive to give that, and this is a challenge we will all accept.” Rodríguez Fraga extended a wish for success to all 20 elected councillors, adding: “Your success signifies success for the borough… Adeje has come a long way in re-

cent years, and we have many important achievements under our belts. “But we have to continue to work to generate wealth for the borough and its people, to create situations that benefit our people in their search for prosperity. “We must also continue to fight for equality, to create a borough that benefits

Seven suspects held in in €2m medicine fraud

SEVEN people, including three doctors and a chemist, have been arrested for, allegedly, taking part in a €2m prescriptions fraud in Tenerife.

The doctors issued false prescriptions, and the chemist collect subsidies from the Health Service, despite never actually dispensing the drugs. The method was for the doctors, with access to the electronic prescriptions service, to find patients from another part of Tenerife, who qualified for the maximum

medicine subsidies. The doctors would then enter on the computer system that the unsuspecting patients had a consultation with them. They would then generate a treatment plan, involving the prescription of high-value medicines. The prescriptions would then be printed out and handed over to a businessman, who acted as intermediary. He took them to a Santa Cruz chemist. The medicines were seldom dispensed, but they were “sold” over and over again, the chemist claiming the subsidies each time. In a linked case, a businesswoman at a now-

closed old people’s home, used a family doctor from the health centre to issue electronic prescriptions to the elderly residents. The operation began when the Canary Islands’ Health Service detected that the pharmacy had been dispensing a group of highcost drugs, most of which were prescribed by the same doctor. The sale of these drugs reached such ridiculouslyhigh figures that the pharmacy invoiced for more doses of these medicines than every other chemist in the Canary Islands put together.

our young people, as well as our retirees, and those who are suffering economic deprivation…these projects are our responsibility.” The Mayor said that the new council would be working hard along the lines laid out, in the service of all the people of Adeje. The constitution of the new council began with

the reading of the official act by the secretary of the council, Hector Gallego. Three municipal political groups were constituted: the socialists, the Coalición Canarias and the mixed group (two councillors from the Podemos-IU and one from the Partido Popular). Each newly-elected councillor was then invited to take his/her oath of office, either on a bible or the constitution. Members of the newlyelected Adeje Council comprise POSO (Socialists): José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, Ermitas Moreira García, Epifanio Díaz Hernández, Esther Rivero Vargas, Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro and José Antonio López Delgado. CC (Coalición Canaria): Oliver Tacoronte Ramos, Patricia León Pérez, Antonio Melián Álvarez and Diana Ariza Rodríguez. Unidas Podemos-IU: Gabriel González Fernández and Eva Bos Delgado. PP (Partido Popular): Inés, Vera Goya.

At least crash driver avoided the rubbish!

A DRIVER was injured last Sunday morning at 5.20, after being involved in a traffic accident with his car and a rubbish lorry in Los Realejos, on the Aveninda de Canarias. The emergency services were alerted, and the caller told the operator that the car-driver was trapped inside his vehicle.

The operator sent a fire-fighting team and an ambulance to assist the driver, who was soon freed from his car by the firemen and assessed by medics. He was then transferred to the ambulance so he could be assessed by the medical team. Fortunately, his injuries were not as serious as expected, but he had hurt his lower limbs and had to be taken to hospital for further treatment. Local Police helped regulate the traffic, while the emergency services got on with the rescue.

H10 Atlantic Sunset is Driver critical set for Playa Paraiso after losing control of car

ONE of two men, aged 30, was left in a critical condition last Sunday night when the car in which they were travelling came off the road when the driver lost control. H10 Hotels will mark the opening of a new property in Tenerife, the H10 Atlantic Sunset, before the end of June. The five-star resort is located in Playa Paraiso, which is a quiet area, directly facing

La Gomera and offering spectacular sunset views all year round. It will be perfect for those looking for a tranquil setting to unwind, after a day of exploring. The resort is just a 15-minute drive from one of Tenerife´s best-known tourist areas, Costa Adeje, offering access to idyllic beaches

and a vast array of excellent activities. The resort has a modern, bright interior design throughout its 291 spacious rooms, with options for the whole family. It boasts spectacular swimming pools for adults and children alike, and a wide range of dining options, as well as exclusive areas for over-18s.

The incident, which damaged the car badly, happened at around 11pm on the TF-64 El Medano road, in Granadilla, and the emergency services were alerted quickly. The operator was informed that there had been an accident, involving a vehicle, and assistance was needed.

The ambulance soon arrived and medics gave rapid treatment to the man, who had suffered severe, internal damage, as well as external bruising. He was taken to La Candelaria Hospital for further assessment and treatment. His companion, aged 26, was also taken there for treatment for his facial injuries, which were not serious. Voluntary fire-fighters were also at the scene, taking charge of rendering their battered car safe, while Guardia Civil officers were on hand to assist. The reason why the driver lost control of the car was not known.

NEWS IN BRIEF Mini-quakes will hardly Rock-climber’s death-fall

JONATHAN Jardim, a rock-climber from Cape Town, but resident in Palma, was with a friend when he lost his footing and fell to his death in Mallorca last Thursday. The tragic incident happened on the Sa Foradada mountains, in the municipality of Deia, and a helicopter had to be called in to help recover his body. Mallorca firemen, Local Police and members of the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM), as well as an ambulance, were called to the scene. His friend was too shocked to give police a statement, but an emergency services spokesman said: “The dead man fell between 50-65ft on to rocks and died instantly. “It seems as though he was abseiling down towards the hole in the rock, rather than climbing up the rock, when he plunged to his death. The man with him has received psychological assistance.” Sa Foradada, part of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains that skirt the length of Mallorca’s Northern coast, is a popular spot for climbers, bird-watchers and hikers.

Belgium woman’s road crash

AN 84-year-old Belgian woman suffered a head injury in a road accident on Monday afternoon, her vehicle overturning on the TF-82, near Los Menores, in Adeje. The emergency service operator, contacted at around 12.45pm, was told that the woman was trapped inside her car, so fire-fighters and an ambulance were sent to the area. Once freed, the woman was taken to the Quiron Hospital because of her head injury. The pensioner was also assessed for further treatment. The Guardia Civil were also present at the scene to offer assistance, if needed.

Wanted man’s shopping error

OFF-DUTY National Police officers have detained a 32-yearold man at a Santa Cruz shopping centre, wanted, allegedly, for sexually assaulting a pregnant woman only days beforehand, in the same city. The man had chalked up a string of criminal offences and was detained by the officers, who were out enjoying their day off with family and friends. The suspect had hidden from the law since the day of the alleged sexual assault. But once the police realised who he was, they arrested him and, having verified his identify, transferred him to the police station where he is in custody, awaiting a court date.

Guardia hunt runaway driver

THE Guardia Civil is searching for the driver of a Citroen C15, which ran over an officer during a police check in Chipiona, a village in the Cadiz region. The vehicle, licence plate 1302 BRN, avoided a police check, running over one of the motorcycles and leaving the officer with serious injuries.

LAST week’s Canarian Weekly news, about the many mini earthquakes occurring between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, was followed by a tiny earthquake swarm under the SE flank of Teide volcano on the Friday.

But it proved to be a really weak event, hardly suggesting that the volcano was about to

awaken in a near future. Firstly, IGN’s seismic network located a so-called hybrid earthquake of magnitude 1.9 at 13km depth, in the northeast of Guía de Isora and south-west of Pico Viejo at 2.28pm. Then, at 5.58pm, another small quake was located in the same area, with similar characteristics (magnitude 1.6), and at 12km depth. Between these two events, an amazing total of 512 miniquakes were registered, all of extremely low magnitude (less than magnitude 0.5). The occurrence of such

earthquake swarms in an active volcanic zone such as Teide-Pico Viejo is a completely normal behaviour during dormant periods of the volcano. They mostly reflect fluid movements (mainly water, gases) in the volcanic system’s interior, and can suggest long-term magma influx. The seemingly large number of quakes is down to the extreme sensitivity of today’s seismometers, which detect quakes the size of shocks corresponding to a person jumping down onto the ground.

Brick wall puts brakes on this crazy motorist

GUARDIA Civil officers have identified a crazy driver, via social media, after he was recorded driving dangerously around the Los Loros area, in the Arafo municipality.

He has been identified as a 24-year-old Spaniard, and his driving came to a halt when he lost control of the vehicle and had an accident. From the recorded video, the Guardia’s trafico department officers identified him, after witnessing his downward speed before coming to a bend, where he had to break, intensely. Another driver in front of him, who was apparently driving at the normal speed limit, also had to brake at the bend, which was when the reckless driver

lost control of his vehicle, when slamming on his brakes. He crashed, practically head-on, into a wall, before veering into a parked car on the same road. The irresponsible driving by some motorists on this road has been a nightmare for local residents. But their co-

operation, along with videos of crazy drivers and petitions, as well as formal complaints, have helped bring awareness to the road’s danger. In August last year, the speed limit there was reduced from 90 km/h to 70 km/h, although some drivers still haven’t taken the hint!

Sex menace, who is viewed on Facebook

A FACEBOOK user has warned people about a man, who has been caught hanging around Tacoronte, in North Tenerife, specifically in the Los Naranjeros area.

And the Facebook person, who says he has witnessed him in action, has a video to prove it, showing him attracting women, and, especially, a young girl. The man asked her for directions, and, once he had her full attention, he began pleasuring himself. But the minor ran away as soon as she realised what was going on. The youngster’s relatives have filed a report with the Guardia Civil, and officers are investigating. The Facebook image has already been shared 4,000 times, and has provoked more than 230 comments to date.

FOR the third consecutive year, Callao Salvaje’s Atlantic Holiday Hotel is opening its doors to Adeje people with cancer, and their families.

The hotel management has donated 12, allinclusive holidays to Adeje residents who are currently undergoing oncological treatment. The borough’s Department of Health Promotion Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, who has underlined the

hotel’s genuine concern, said: “Initiatives such as this show that one of the successes of our tourism sector is that people come first. “And that’s thanks to businesses such as this, and business people such as Charlotte Abildtrup, Atlantic Hotel director, who have shown their total commitment to the project.” Charlotte said: “We want to help these people and their families, giving them a week in which they can rest and escape from the stress their cancer is causing.

“We know that these are fighters and that, day after day, they are overcoming so many difficulties. That is why we are delighted to welcome 12 families into our hotel during the summer months, offering them a period where they can relax and enjoy the best we have to offer.” The hotel has large holiday apartments, plus salt and freshwater pools, playgrounds, tennis courts, a park, a gym and restaurants, as well as a first-class service.

Part of BBC 2 hit series was shot in Lanzarote

SINCE it was launched at the end of May, BBC 2’s “The Planets” has taken viewers on a journey into the past of our mysterious solar system. From destructive meteor showers to planet formation, the series details the history, through spectacular reconstructions, involving a little CGI magic… and some amazing locations, here on planet Earth, including those pictured on Lanzarote! Being on location was essential for The Planets to have a sense of realism, and producer Gideon Bradshaw said: “We wanted to go beyond just seeing the planets from space. We wanted to land, and place our cameras on the surface!” And so they did, through some rather clever use of locations... which is where they filmed “The Planets on Earth”.

Jordan's Wadi Rum became the surface of Mars when they recreated the Curiosity Mars Rover sequence in Episode 2. This vast expanse of desert already has an “otherworldly” feeling to it, so there was little work needed to be done! Series director Stephen

Cooter said: “There were times while we were filming when I felt as though we really could be standing on the surface of Mars.” Iceland was used multiple times throughout filming, and its barren, icy landscapes are no strangers to the world of film and television. Some 50%

of “Game of Thrones” was filmed there! Iceland's major waterfalls, Dettifoss and Godafoss, provided the close-ups for the creation of Echus Chasma on Mars, the largest waterfall in the solar system, from 3.7 billion years ago. And they also used the

glaciers and lakes of Iceland to provide the landscapes for Saturn's moon Enceladus and Pluto. Stromboli, an active volcano off the coast of Sicily became Jupiter's moon: a volcanic spot itself! This was featured in Episode 3, highlighting Jupiter's importance in the solar system. Lanzarote assumes many forms, being transformed into the setting for both Venus and Mercury. The magnificent Montaña Colorada became the setting for Mercury, four billion years ago, as it was starting to develop. The Canary Island’s filming trip continued to Timanfaya National Park, where there are more than 100 volcanoes, helping to recreate the first colour photo the world had ever seen of the Venus surface. It was taken in 1982, and soviet spacecraft Venera 13 sent the first images home.

Fraudsters rake in billions!

FAKE products are costing Spanish businesses the equivalent of 10.6% of their sales, a new report has found.

At least €6.7bn worth of sales are lost in Spain each year to counterfeit goods, according to the report by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). According to its latest data, the global trade in fake goods rose to €452.9bn in 2016, representing 3.3% of world trade. In the previous report, based on 2013data, the figure was €338bn, or 2.5%. Worst hit is the fashion industry, with losses totalling €28.4bn billion in Europe, adding up to 9.4% of total turnover. Pharmaceuticals

are the second hardest-hit, suffering losses of €9.6bn, followed by cosmetics, on €7bn. And counterfeit wines and spirits cost companies 5.9% of their business, or €2.4bn overall. The impact of fake products is worse in Spain than the EU average in several sectors, especially the country’s fashion industry, which sees 14.9% of sales lost to counterfeit goods, pharmaceuticals 4.5%, wines and spirits 8.3% and smartphones 10%. In real terms, analysts say it costs the EU 480,000 jobs, which, in turn, leaves the bloc missing €16bn a year in tax revenue. It is not surprising then, that across the EU, the total, economic impact of fake products is estimated at around €92bn.

Nine arrested after tuna-fishing spree

A PROBE into illegal tuna fishing resulted in nine arrests in Almeria, and investigations into another three people.

Inspectors from the Agriculture Ministry’s Fisheries General Secretariat, along with agents from the Guardia Civil’s Seprona nature protection service, took part in the operation, dubbed “Tarannuta”. It was launched to investigate furtive fishing activities from leisure craft over the tuna fishing season, on the back of complaints from the professional sector, and the corresponding threat to the species. Investigations led to the seizure of nine tuna fish, with

Workers’ Union still opposes sale of island casinos

a joint weight of nearly two tonnes, and a €59,000 market value. Divers recovered one fish, from where it had been hidden on the sea bottom in Villaricos, after officers in a Guardia helicopter clearly made out tuna on board a boat, preparing to dock in the port. The boat turned around when the crew spotted the Guardia, but a Provincial Maritime Service craft caught up with it and directed it back to Villaricos. Spanish press reported that the Guardia officers believed there was evidence of an organised network behind the illegal fishing, given the tuna’s value of €30 to €40 a kilo, especially as the average weight of the fish is some 200kg!

TENERIFE’S publiclyowned casinos were put up for sale for €24.9m last year, yet the decision continues to draw criticism from the Spanish General Workers’ Union, which maintains that the properties have been undervalued.

The efforts of Tenerife Cabildo to sell the island’s three stateowned casinos continue to generate controversy, because one of Spain’s largest unions has renewed calls for the tender to be suspended. The casinos’ sale represented the culmination of a Tenerife Cabildo vote in March 2012, which approved the regional government’s Plan for the Restructuring and Streamlining of the Public Enterprise Sector. The tender for Casino Playa de las Americas, Casino Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Casino Puerto de la Cruz represents the “process of restructuring the island’s public sector”, according to Cabildo President Carlos

Alonso Rodríguez. Nevertheless, the Workers’ Union (UGT), which has criticised the sale plans strongly, is in the process of undertaking administrative proceedings in a bid to halt the tender. After scrutinising the tender terms, the UGT released a statement, alleging: “The sale clearly damages the principles of objectivity and transparency that must govern any public tender.” A key point of contention has been the asking price for the properties. “The Council previously put one of the casinos up for sale for €20m and now they’re selling three for €24m,” argued Agustín Melián, Works’ Council President of Casinos Tenerife. He believes the move is all the more unsuitable, because the properties are worth more than they have been in a decade. According to Cabildo figures, since 2014, the first year the business made a profit since the 2008 financial crises, the properties’ worth has continued to grow, reaching €2.9m last year. Melián added: “It is not normal that every time they

earn more money, instead of going up, the price goes down.” The union also contends that an assessment carried out by property valuations company Tinsa, which valued Casino Playa de las Américas at €4.5m, does not include the value of the venue’s slot machines and gaming equipment. Despite this, Alonso asserts that the sale is justified. “It does not seem reasonable that gaming is in public hands,” he said. “It’s an anomaly in Spain. There is not a single other publiclyowned casino in Spain.” The tender specifications require the new operator to retain all 121 members of staff, currently employed by the three properties, for at least two years. However, the UGT has also cast doubt on this. “We know that they can use the cost of the investment to justify any losses and to do an ERE (downsizing plan),” said Melián. “This was put to Juan Carlos Pérez Frías, head of the Cabildo’s Treasury Department, but there hasn’t been a response.”

Spanish golfer’s killer will get a life sentence COLLIN Daniel Richards, who has a long criminal history, including domestic abuse and assault, has pleaded guilty to murdering 22-yearold Spanish golfer Celia Barquín on an American golf course.

He will serve a life sentence without parole, according to US public prosecutor Jessica Reynolds, from Story county, Iowa. Tragic Barquín was found dead on the Coldwater Links golf course on 18th September last year, in Ames, in the state of Iowa. The 22-year-old, a civil engineering student at the local State University, had gone to the course to practise when she was attacked. Within hours of finding her body, police had arrested Richards, 22, and charged him with first-degree murder. He initially pleaded his

innocence before confessing to his dastardly crime. Despite being so young, Richards’ was well known to the police, and his sentence will be handed down in August. “My heart is with Celia’s family today, with the hope that this result will bring them some level of comfort,” said Ms Reynolds, who is also the County Attorney. “This tragic crime is something we have all been moved and saddened by.” Ms Barquín was considered one of Spain’s most promising young golfers. She won the Big 12 Women’s Championship, a top-level tournament of university golf in the US last year, and was female champion at the European Amateur competition in Slovakia. She died after being stabbed in the head, neck and upper body, and, said police: “Richards had fresh scratches on his face when arrested.” An acquaintance of the suspect told police that

Richards had said he had “an urge to rape and kill a woman”. Alarm bells were sounded at 10am on that fatal day last September, when players found a golf bag abandoned on the Coldwater Golf Links

course and called police, who found Ms Barquín’s body in the water, a “certain distance” from the bag. She had travelled to the US after receiving a scholarship to study civil engineering at Iowa State University. During

her stay there, the university named her Female Athlete of the Year. The 22-year-old, described as an “outstanding team player” by the Spanish Golf Federation, was also a part of the combined Spanish golf team, who came in third and second in 2015 and 2016, respectively, in the European Championship. “As a person, she seemed to have a smaller character than she really did, but it was just an image,” said Nacho Gervás, technical director of the Spanish Golf Federation. “When you spoke with her, you realised that she was very mature,” he added, recalling the time she studied at the national Blume Golf School between 2012 and 2014. “She was very clever with how she played, and she worked harder than anyone. At Blume, she was the only player who trained on Sundays. The others rested, but she went out with her clubs to the course.”

Spain not as peaceful as we’d like to believe

SPANISH citizens are losing faith in government and political institutions, according to an NGO, which claimed the country was becoming less peaceful.

The Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP) Global Peace Index ranked Spain 32nd, which was a drop of three places, compared with a year ago. But the country came 21st in Europe, and its overall peace level is still classed as high.

Iceland was recorded as the most peaceful country, while Afghanistan was last. Britain came 45th, which was a fiveplace improvement on last year. Overall, though it might be hard to believe, global peacefulness has improved for the first time in five years, even if the world is not as peaceful as it was a decade ago. Steve Killelea, head of IEP, told Spanish media that economic hardship, unleashed following the 2008 recession and successive corruption scandals, had bred “disenchantment” with political institutions.

The ranking evaluates countries on such factors as wellbeing, confidence in election results, and corruption, as well as accepting the rights of others. A report, released alongside the ranking, stated that the volume of Spanish people, who felt they were free to choose how to live their lives, had fallen. Also, trust in elections was found to have fallen, along with respect for the rights of others. But, overall, global peace has improved for the first time in five years, according to the report.

Terrorists’ fund-raiser network is taken apart

SPANISH police have detained a money-laundering network, accused of raising funds for Al-Qaeda terrorists in Syria. The Europol-assisted operation involved more than 350 officers, who raided 14 homes and businesses across Madrid, Toledo and Valencia. The suspects, reported to be of Syrian origin, included relatives of suspected Al Qaeda members. A Interior Ministry spokesperson said: “The organisation was led by

a family clan, which, for years, were said to have used a legal business structure to hide illicit operations, with which they evaded tax authorities and laundered large sums of money.” The illicit funds were, allegedly, destined for the opposition-held area of Idlib, in Syria “to give support and financial backing to a terrorist militia there”. The laundered cash was sent, via human couriers and the “hawala” system, which is an informal, trustbased, payment method, far more difficult to trace than bank transfers.

What we should do in case of a car accident SUMMER is coming in beautiful, sunny Spain. With temperatures soaring it’s a great feeling, although a tad hot at times for all expats who live and work in this tranquilo environment.

Tranquilo, that is until the influx of tourists from many countries around the world, especially Britain and the rest of Europe. Now, more than other times during the year, one needs to be even more careful on the roads. With all the extra cars and drivers, who are, perhaps, more used to driving on the left, an increase in the risk of traffic accidents is inevitable. Always make sure your tyre pressures are correct, by checking them at least once a month. Also, check that your car’s radiator level is topped up. The last thing you want is for your vehicle to overheat, and you have to wait for a breakdown

truck on the edge of a busy motorway! It’s also illegal to run out of screen-wash, so make sure this is topped up, too. And driving with flip-flops or shoes with no back is not permitted, either. Needless to say, seat belts must be worn all round, and young children need safety harnesses. Using mobile phones are a definite No, INCLUDING texting, which is probably worse than speaking. Should the unthinkable happen, here are some tips that everyone, from a new driver to an experienced

one, should remember in the case of an accident: *Stay calm and wear the reflective vest *Get to a safe area near the accident scene, turn on your emergency flashers and use the two triangles *Make sure everyone is okay and call 112, if necessary *When it is safe, take pictures of the vehicles involved, damage, road signs, etc *Get statements and contact information from any witnesses *Complete the accident report: write down the other driver’s licence number,

insurance details, vehicle information and phone number. Remember it has to be signed by both drivers and reported within seven days. If you need road assistance, immediately call 900 101 369, the Liberty Freephone Number, where you will be attended to in your own language. LIBERTY SEGUROS Car Insurance is tailor-made with you in mind, and is perfect for expats in Spain. It offers total coverage to both the driver and passengers in case of an accident, as well as

Wastewater towns fined total of €22.355m by EU

The Brexit Race Where does it leave you as a resident? With a No-Deal Brexit currently back in the running, it’s no wonder that expats in the Canary Islands are feeling a bit lost. At Blacktower Financial Management in Tenerife, we are here to help you understand what Brexit might mean for you.

SEVERAL towns in Spain have paid a total of 22.355 million euros in fines to the European Commission … and there will be more to come!

The nine towns, each with a population of more than 15,000, were not treating their wastewater in compliance with EU directives, going back to 2001. And, so far, only one of them has solved the problem. Notification of the first fine arrived last summer, and the Spanish Government’s Environment Ministry

calculates that these will continue to arrive until 2023, because the necessary modifications are unlikely to be completed until 2022. Three of the culprits, Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and Nerja, are in Malaga, while Tarifa and Barbate are in Cadiz. There are two more towns in Huelva, one in Gijon and another in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz Between them, they have a total of 379,000 residents, and, of the nine offenders, only Tarifa is now treating its wastewater correctly. And, thanks to its improvements, the EU fine was reduced by €595,000.

You can also select a vehiclerepair garage of your choice to trust and give you peace of mind. Liberty Seguros is considered the preferred expat insurer in Spain today and has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents. They have many years of experience, and are dedicated to giving you indepth information about the different policies, not only for car but also life, home, business, commercial, funeral, etc. They also advise you on the best cover to suit you and your family, in your own language. the Government of Spain has pledged contingency measures to safeguard the rights of British citizens residing in Spain.

Call us today or visit our offices in Valle De San Lorenzo, and we will be happy to review your finances and discuss how you can be best prepared for Brexit.

SET! Check your “certificado de registro” - either the credit card-sized version or green A4 document. An NIE on white paper is not the right document and you will need to apply for the green certificate before UK leaves the EU.

READY! Spain and the UK have drawn up a Withdrawal Agreement which seeks reciprocal assurances for the rights of British citizens in Spain and Spanish expats in the UK. And, even if there is no overarching Brexit agreement,

You should also ensure that you have the correct registration for healthcare in Spain as a No-Deal Brexit could mean that your entitlement changes. However, under the Spanish Royal Decree, there will be a

safety net in place until the end of 2020 for anyone who is correctly registered when the UK leaves the EU. So, it is important to check you have the right documents in place. GO! As a resident, Brexit could change arrangements for travel, work, savings, pensions and investments, and while there’s lots of information out there, trying to decide what applies to you can be quite tricky. As you are probably aware, the race is on to get your circumstances in order. So, why not talk to the team at Blacktower and let us help you get across the Brexit finish line.

New-look Gibraltar after Monaco status

21st June 2019 - 27th June 2019

THE Gibraltar Government believes that the Victoria Keys complex, which will be built at Coaling Island, inside the historic harbour, will raise the profile of The Rock to rival the likes of Monaco. Luxury flats and new shopping areas, along with offices, will be built in partnership with the Government. And Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said proudly: “The development will showcase our benefits to our widest ever worldwide audience.” He added: “Our international prominence appears to have had a positive influence on the high-net-worth individuals we strive to attract to Gibraltar.” With current Brexit concerns in Europe, Gibraltar is seen as a stronger investment than owning a Spanish property. A total of 60,000sq/m of land will be created for the project, via a mammoth, seareclamation scheme. The complicated plan will be taken on by a Government-

owned company, guaranteeing safety in the investment, while the £300m cost will be returned to Government coffers once the land has been created. “It is precisely projects like these which ensure that new businesses wanting to relocate are able to secure accommodation for themselves and their workers,” said the Chief Minister. “With continued requests for commercial space, and its knock-on demand for residential accommodation, it

is essential that we exploit this opportunity to its fullest.” But he pledged that there would be no reclamation outside of port waters before the end of the current transition period, under the EU Withdrawal Agreement. He also said. “The scheme will be in keeping with all environmental protection rules. “Victoria Keys will have an extensive, landscaped, public promenade, solely for pedestrians and cyclists, along the entire waterfront perimeter.”

He added: “There will also be wide, tree-lined avenues, running east to west, retaining the historical views across the bay, and it will become our very own garden city by the sea.” It will be the second time

the current Gibraltar Government has carried out a project of this magnitude. The Westside reclamation of the late 1990s, arguably, created the foundations for the modern Gibraltar economy.

Family drugs’ team arrested by officers

A FAMILY in Lanzarote, comprising three women and a man, were all detained by the National Police when the latter was caught, redhanded, distributing drugs. He was spotted exchanging the drugs for money, and suspicious officers launched an immediate investigation

into the family, aged between 23 and 56. The police soon noticed that the “clients” telephoned their orders, and the drugs were then delivered to wherever the individual buyer determined. Officers raided the family’s house and confiscated 21gm of cocaine, along with €9,913 in cash, found during the search. They also discovered 10 mobile telephones and a set of specialised weighing scales, as well as three cars registered to that address.

Police will not fine drivers who smoke

Uber preparing for rooftop taxi service RIDE-HAILING company Uber has unveiled its vision for the future of urban transportation: flying taxis to carry customers from rooftop to rooftop.

The planned UberAIR service will use electric, jet-powered vehicles, part helicopter, part drone and part fixedwing aircraft, to transport customers around the city. These aircraft, developed by Boeing and other partners,

feature multiple small rotors, capable of both vertical take-off and landing, and rapid horizontal flight. The on-demand air taxis can be ordered by customers through the smartphone app, in the same way that Uber’s road-based taxi alternatives are hailed. They will carry four passengers and a pilot, and will take off and land from designated rooftop hubs, known as “skyports”. And, eventually, Uber hopes the machines will be able to fly themselves.

The company claims that UberAIR will transport tens of thousands of people across cities for the same price as a UberX car trip over the same distance. It plans to use Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne, as the test site for the group’s flying-taxi service. It will begin the test flights of its pilotless aircraft in Melbourne, as well as US cities Dallas and Los Angeles next year, before commercial operations begin, in 2023.

POLICE will not fine people for smoking while driving according to the Director of the DGT traffic department.

In the past, there have been several cases of Local Police handing out tickets to people seen smoking, while behind the wheel, arguing that they could not be fully in control of their vehicle. Now, though, Pere Navarro says his department has no plans to order traffic police to take action against smokers, despite saying that it is a clear distraction, and, thus, dangerous. He believes his department would support a possible Health Ministry “ban” on public-health grounds. But he adds: “I will not be comfortable with the image of Guardia Civil chasing smokers.” Navarro, speaking at the launch of a new traffic-safety campaign, highlighted that 24% of drivers killed last year had high rates of alcohol in their blood. And that percentage rises to 35% for those killed on urban roads.

Travel insurer censured after the death of tourist ONE of Britain’s biggest travel insurers has been reprimanded for “exceptionally poor” service, following the death of a policyholder, who was denied a medical evacuation flight home.

A report by a Financial Ombudsman Service investigator has criticised Travel Insurance Facilities (TIF), the company behind several major insurance brands, including Flexicover and Boots, for failing to act “fairly or reasonably in such grave circumstances”. But the insurer “strongly disagrees with the findings” and is asking the ombudsman to review the opinion. Martin Blake, 72, had a heart attack in Lanzarote last year and was admitted to the local public hospital, which said he needed a coronary angioplasty. It was unable to perform the procedure because of inadequate facilities, so Mr

Blake was put on a waiting list for Gran Canaria’s larger, public hospital. The doctors told the insurer that Mr Blake would have to wait a month and that there was a risk of complications if he were not evacuated sooner, either to the UK or a nearer, private hospital. The insurer insisted that Mr Blake was not fit to fly and that it was in his best interests to stay in the local hospital until he could move to Gran Canaria. At the time, the insurance company declined to organise an air ambulance or private treatment, although it promised a partial refund if the family arranged their own flight.

Mr Blake’s GP told the investigator that the NHS would have operated on Mr Blake “within 48 to 72 hours” if he were brought home. The FOS investigator said the insurer’s claims about Mr Blake’s fitness to fly “were not consistent with the medical reports”, and also quotes a transcript of a call between the hospital and insurer. In it, a Spanish doctor said: “The air ambulance is so much better than here. He is not even being monitored here, as I do not have a monitor for him. “Not even his saturation levels are being monitored; I don’t know if you are understanding... we live next to Africa! We do not have catheterisation.”

The investigator also criticised the insurer for not considering private treatment properly, and, repeatedly, failing to call the family back. TIF, which said that private treatment was not covered, paid £350 compensation for poor service. And the investigator’s report supported the insurer in its refusal to pay £220 carhire costs, because of an exclusion in the small print. The family eventually paid £22,000 for their own air ambulance, but tragically, Mr Blake died two days later in Wrexham Hospital, having suffered a stroke which had not been identified by the Spanish hospital. It took the insurer more than six months to refund the cost of the air ambulance, after being contacted by The Times newspaper. The findings have been sent to the family and insurer for responses. After considering these, the ombudsman will issue its “final decision”. TIF says it has the deepest sympathy for the family and that decisions throughout were based on medical

advice, given by its own team of “experienced specialist doctors with specific medical aviation knowledge”. The company added in a statement: “There were three medical reports provided by the hospital, and none stated Mr Blake was fit to fly. “The investigator has issued a clarification and accepted that an insurer would not be expected to arrange a repatriation against its own medical team’s advice. Insurers do not and cannot provide medical care. “The questions as to whether Mr Blake received the best and most appropriate treatment should be directed to the hospital which had the duty of care. “We acted fairly and reasonably, in the best interests of Mr Blake. We acted in full accordance with the insurance contract, which is, primarily, a contract of financial indemnification and does not impose a clinical duty of care on the insurer. “We have already started defamation proceedings against The Times.”

Too many Brits behaving badly

THE Spanish Aviation Safety and Security Agency (AESA) has concluded that British holiday-makers are tops when it comes to the number of fines issued for bad behaviour.

The Madrid-based agency was made aware of incidents involving 862 passengers last year, although they didn’t all result in fines. But of those penalised, 264 were British, 203 Spanish, with Germans trailing on 61. Fourth spot was Italy (32) then Ireland (30) and France (25). From 2017 up until March this year, AESA has fined 729 people a total of just over €580,000 for behaviour deemed inappropriate while on board an aircraft. Fines range up to €5,000, but the final bill is much higher, sometimes, because disruptive passengers can be made to pay the cost of flight diversions, running into thousands of euros. An AESA spokesman said: “No problems have been detected in the payment of the fines, and people can appeal their penalties.” When it comes to holiday hotspots,

the Costa Blanca’s Alicante airport, which serves Benidorm, seems to have a particular problem. Of the 186 notifications for bad behaviour, 127 involved British nationals, just 16 Spanish and 15 Irish. This was way ahead of Palma Airport’s 116 total, involving 48 Brits and 36 Germans. The Costa del Sol seems to be the destination for the best-behaved passengers with Spanish accounting for 23 notifications, ahead of the Britain’s 19. An AESA video warns holiday-makers: “Inappropriate behaviour on board, drinking, disorderly behaviour and disregarding crew instructions, could endanger the safety of the flight and give rise to a fine of up to €5,000. “Do not put your holidays at risk.”

Spain to deploy 40,000 police to address our tourist terrorist fears

UP to 40,000 additional police officers are set to be deployed across Spanish tourist hubs, as part of a Government security plan to protect holiday-makers from potential terrorist activities. The country’s Interior Ministry has announced plans to increase security significantly at ports, hotels, beaches and campsites across Andalusia, Asturias, the Canary Islands, Cantabria, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands (including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) as part of its summer operation. The additional security measures will remain in place from 1st July until 31st August, and they will be extended to 30th September on the Balearic Islands. Currently, Spain has a Level 4 terrorism alert in place, which means the risk of a terror attack is considered ‘high’ by the Spanish authorities. The scale runs from 1-5, the fifth level being implemented in cases of “very high risk” of a terrorist attack, although Spain’s Level 4 alert has been in place since 2015. The Spanish Interior Ministry released a statement last week, saying holiday resorts were considered “the most vulnerable” points of

A report published this week, in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal, revealed that both planets have a similar mass to Earth. Also, they are warm, and could have liquid water on their surface. The find was possible, thanks to the Spanish-German

potential attacks, and, for that reason, would receive additional support during the busy summer months. “The large crowds in these holiday resorts, taking into account the 83 million foreigners who visited Spain last year, will also be one primary focus of the operation, along with the implementation of preventative measures, targeting possible terrorist actions to reinforce the Level 4 antiterrorism alert,” said the statement. It added: “These additional safety measures will include police reinforcements and an increased presence of the National Police and the Guardia Civil.” Spanish newspaper La Razon, reporting on the Government’s additional security plans this summer, noted that up to 40,000 members of the

National Police and Guardia Civil would be deployed to nine tourist zones across the country. Yet the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on its travel advice website that holiday-makers can take “normal precautions” when in Spain. But it cautions that there is a “general threat from terrorism in Europe”, and that this threat is considered to be high in Spain. It adds: “While there is a risk of indiscriminate attacks, targets could include areas frequented by tourists. Citizens should increase their security awareness and exercise heightened caution in popular tourist locations and crowded places, as terrorists are likely to attempt further attacks. “In case of any security incident, you should follow

the instructions and advice of the local police and your tour operator.” Similar security precautions are also in place in countries across Europe including Britain, France, Germany and Belgium. The British terrorism threat remains “severe” which is the second-highest alert level and means an attack could be highly likely. “There is still a global risk of indiscriminate terrorist attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by tourists and expatriates,” says the DFA website. “Additional security measures are in place at airports, throughout transportation networks and at high-profile venues in Great Britain. Travellers may experience delays.”

Another two Earths in the solar system?

SCIENTISTS, using images captured at Almeria’s Calar Alto Observatory, and by two other telescopes in Spain, have identified two planets, not unlike Earth, which just might be able to support life.

CARMENES project, which, since 2016, has searched for planets around nearby stars. The investigations have been carried out with the assistance of a highprecision spectrograph, installed on a 3.5-metre telescope at the Calar Alto observatory, on the highest point of the province, in the Filabres mountains. The two planets orbit the Teegarden star, a red dwarf much smaller and less bright than our sun, and 12 lightyears from our solar system… or, in space terms, just up the road! And scientists have not ruled out the possibility of there being more planets orbiting Teegarden.

The Calar Alto Observatory played an important role in identifying the planets

Five candidates, aged between 17 and 19, handed the petition in to the Ministry of Education. The campaign was engineered by 19-year-old León student Roberto Castrillo, who was accompanied by four others from León, Madrid and Alicante. It calls for the Evaluación de Bachillerato para el Accesso a la Universidad (A-level evaluation for university access), known as the EvAU or EBAU, to follow the same curriculum, structure and questions throughout Spain, rather than differing for each of its 17 autonomouslygoverned regions. While the Bachillerato, Spain’s answer to A-levels, is marked internally by the pupil’s school or college, the EvAU, formerly known as Selectividad, is graded independently. It is a summary of the material studied in Bachillerato and is necessary for university entrance. But regional differences can mean that qualifying for a higher education place, and for grants to cover tuition fees and put towards cost of living, becomes a postcode lottery. Students in the Valencia region, who sat the sciences’ curriculum, said the maths questions were “impossible”. Now, up to 9,000 teenagers fear they will not get a grant for their degree courses. At National Government level, the right-wing PP and centre-right Ciudadanos have already proposed in Parliament that the EvAU be the same nationwide. Education Minister Isabel Celaá says the EvAU, presented in its new format this month, “works well”. But she will create a working group, comprising university faculty heads, regional governments and various education experts, to look into the issue.

SINCE Britain’s Conservative Party leadership contest began, last week, the pound’s movement has been limited, because of expectations that there will be no Brexit progress until it concludes. Despite this, the euro has been unable to capitalise on the pound’s weakness, because of various Eurozone economic and political uncertainties, leaving GBP/ EUR trending in a tight region near €1.12, while EUR/GBP is trending near £0.89. The US dollar has seen high volatility throughout, and GBP/USD is currently trending near its worst levels of $1.25, and EUR/USD near $1.12, as the greenback steadied ahead of this week’s Federal Reserve news. After falling throughout May as no-deal-Brexit fears returned, the pound has been trending closer and closer to its worst levels all

THE European Central Bank’s (BCE’s) decision to postpone interest-rate increases across the board means mortgages and credit in general are likely to remain stable for some time.

The BCE’s board of governors, during a recent meeting in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, agreed that interest charged to high-street banks across the Eurozone, for excess of reserves, would remain at its current 0.4% until at least the middle of 2020. It is the second time since 2011 that the BCE has postponed an interest-rate rise, having previously said it would start to climb by summer 2019 or, at the latest, the end of this year. The interest charge on excess of reserves is different from the Euribor, or consumer interest across the Eurozone charged on mortgages, credit cards, for late payment, and other general finance, but this decision is part of the BCE’s general policy of keeping rates down, to encourage the flow of funding throughout the bloc of countries using the euro. The BCE wants to aim for a rate of inflation of about or just below 2%, but no higher. And, despite rock-bottom

year, since the beginning of the month. UK Prime Minister Theresa May stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party, kicking off the party’s leadership contest. The frontrunner of the contest, Boris Johnson, advocates a hard Brexit, which is keeping pressure on the pound. The euro has been unable to capitalise on the pound’s weakness, though. Since the end of May, GBP/EUR losses have slowed, as Eurozone data continues to disappoint investors, worsening concerns that the European Central Bank (ECB) could soon be pressured into taking a more dovish stance on Eurozone monetary policy. Still, much of the strength the US dollar showed earlier in the year has also faded. US trade protectionism, and signs of weakness in the economy, have led to higher Federal Reserve interest-rate-cut expectations. Speculation that rate-cut bets have been overdone helped the US dollar to recover, last week, but the US currency’s months of gains appear to have come to an end.

For the pound, it’s unlikely that much will change for at least another month, as the formalities of the Conservative Party leadership contest unfold. Markets already have a pretty good idea of who will be PM, but, until it is confirmed, there are unlikely to be any developments in Brexit. This will leave the pound to be driven by strength in its rivals, as both the euro and US dollar are likely to be driven by economic, political, and Central Bank news.

This week’s biggest event was Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision, and the tone taken by the bank on US monetary policy will be what has impacted on the US dollar’s movement. European Central Bank (ECB) speculation will be influenced by major Eurozone data, such as inflation data, due last week. Aside from major data, news in trade and political tensions will also influence the euro and US dollar.

a Euribor interest rate of -0.175%, despite fears in early 2017 that it could rise, forcing home-owners to tighten their belts. The evolution of the Euribor before and after the financial crisis shows that variation tends not to be sharp. And, here in Spain, variable-rate mortgages are updated annually, giving owners plenty of time to plan and contract a fixed rate instead, if interest looks set to creep up. The BCE’s board of governors said in a statement: “Our aim is to continue reinvesting the main payments of the debt expiring, under the programme of bondpurchasing, in their entirety, for a prolonged period, after which, interest rates will begin to rise. “The reinvesting of debt repayments will continue for as long as necessary, to maintain liquidity conditions and a large degree of financial comfort and stability.” In addition, the governors

revealed that unemployment up to the end of April, the last full month for which figures are available, had fallen to 7.6% in the Eurozone. That was its lowest since 2008, and it fell to 6.4% in the European Union, its lowest since the year 2000, when Eurostat started compiling figures for the bloc as a whole. Unemployment in Spain, based on figures at the end of the first quarter, which is the most recent available, was 14.7%, or 3.35 million, registered as jobseekers. This is a vast improvement on figures during the financial crisis. In autumn 2012, it peaked at 27.2%, rising above 25% for the first time in history, with 6.2m workers registered as unemployed. The lowest unemployment was seen right at the start of post-dictatorship Spain, at 3.7%, or just 600,000. And since 1980, it has only briefly been below 10% between 2004-2008. Its lowest figure came in 2007, when 7.9%, adding up to 1.8m people, were unemployed. Within 2½ years, it had risen by nearly 11% to 18.8% and 4.3m, continuing to climb until 2013. Unemployment in Spain currently sits at around the same level as in 1981, which was the lowest it would be for the rest of the 20th century, and about the same as in the year 2000.

Home-owner boost as the interest-rate rise stays the same

interest, it was still only at 1.2% in May and 1.7% in April. Inflation in the Eurozone, calculated without taking into account the rising prices of fuel, alcohol, cigarettes and food, came in at 0.8% last month, which was well below April’s figures. Containing inflation and encouraging investment is the BCE’s main aim, which it reaffirmed during the Lithuania meeting. Having been around the 2.5% mark from 2002 to 2006,

the Euribor reached a historic high of 5.45% in September 2008, coinciding with the financial crisis, the collapse of Spain’s housing market, as well the recession and unemployment across the entire European Union. This left mortgage payments spiralling out of control and led to countless repossessions. But the rate dropped sharply in 2011, fell below 1% in 2013, and has been in negative figures since February 2016. In fact, May closed with

Life Of Pies Our Lives

Monday 24th June, BBC1, 19.30

Life Of Pies lifts the shortcrust pastry lid on the British Pie Awards, celebrating the tradition and passion that goes into making the perfect pastry parcel. The pie business is anything but humble. Brits spend £1.2 billion a year on them, with 75 percent of us eating at least one a month. The British Pie Awards is the pie industry’s event of the year, taking over Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire - home of the Pork Pie. Our cameras have been following some of the 200 bakers as they prepare for the annual competition, hoping to win the pie-makers Holy Grail, the coveted ‘Pie Of Pies’ trophy. Past winners have seen their small businesses boom and their prized pies sold in Harrods. Don’t be fooled by the competition’s venue at Melton’s St Mary’s Church. Once Reverend Kevin Ashby’s ceremonial ‘blessing of the pie’ is over, the oven gloves are off! Beneath the bunting and stained glass, old rivalries set butchers against bakers and region against region. The competition is no stranger to controversy and scandal: a pasty won in 2016 amid cries of “that’s not a pie!” and this year’s competition sparks a new debate... Life Of Pies is part of BBC One’s Our Lives series - a collection of programmes from across the UK celebrating the diversity of our society.

Sunday 23rd June, ITV1, 21.00 India 1795 and a lone carriage is driven through the wild countryside on the outskirts of Delhi. At the front of the carriage is John Beecham. His guards sit close by, with their guns at the ready, looking out for strangers and bandits. A grand mansion is being prepared for a new master. The household servants, Baadal and Mool Chand, wait in anticipation whilst Bindu, Mool Chand’s wife, says prayers to bless the house. John takes up residence in the grand mansion on the outskirts of the city. The staff are shocked to discover that their secretive new master is not only English but has also arrived with his infant son August, a baby of mixed parentage. An invitation arrives at the house from General Castillon, a French mercenary who works for the Emperor at The Red Fort. Baadal warns John that he is not a good man. Castillon clearly has a deep dislike for the British and the Company and is suspicious of John’s motives for being in Delhi. He is convinced that he is an agent for the Company. John informs Castillon that he has a new life as an independent trader and requests a licence to trade. Only the Emperor can give this licence. It’s clear Castillon will do all that he can to ensure this doesn’t happen. Murad Beg, a neighbour, invites John to a party at his home. John soon catches the eye of the only English woman at the party. Margaret, a governess, is a rarity in that part of the world. The connection between them is immediate and undeniable. John meets the Emperor and makes his request for a licence. Castillon disapproves of John and tells the Emperor. The Emperor decides to test John. Find the perfect gift for the Empress’s birthday and, if he succeeds, maybe John will be given a licence. With the country in turmoil and political tensions on a knife edge, displeasing the Emperor could prove fatal, and John must tread carefully if he is to secure his future and keep his family safe. John travels to the docks to meet his mother Henrietta and is surprised to discover that she has travelled with a companion, Violet. It seems that coincidentally a close friend and former soldier Samuel Parker is on the same boat. Is it coincidence or was it planned? Henrietta, Violet and Margaret see baby August, John’s son. They are shocked – who is the mother? Life in Beecham House is about to become a whole lot more complicated.

Top Gear

Sunday 23rd June, BBC2, 20.00

It’s an electric car special, as Chris, Freddie and Paddy each attempt to build their own battery powered sports car on a budget. Chris tests the Tesla Model 3 on track, while Danny Boyle and Himesh Patel guest. The 24 Minutes of Le Mansfield The future of cars, we’re told, is electric. Problem is, most electric cars out there at the moment are either (a) very expensive or (b) very boring, or (c) both. The TG presenters reckon that, if the world’s to get really excited about EVs, what we need is a budget electric sports car. Something cheap, battery-powered and, most importantly, fun. With no such cars forthcoming on the market, Paddy, Freddie and Chris each set out to build their own electric sports cars for a very small amount of money, which they then set about testing with a tour of some of the Midlands finest industrial locations, a tour culminating in Top Gear’s inaugural urban electric endurance race: the 24 Minutes of Le Mansfield. Just like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but shorter. And in Mansfield. Cue some wheel-to-wheel, high-octane racing - another small incident with Freddie and some market stalls and a small amount of actual electrocution. Did you know? Paddy McGuiness’ electric car ran out of battery and he had to knock on doors until he found a friendly family who would help him charge it from their mains socket Mansfield Town Council allowed Top Gear to lock down the high street and set up a race sequence on the city streets Powertest: Telsa Model 3 vs Everything If you follow Elon Musk on Twitter, you’ll know the Tesla boss spouts quite a few outlandish claims. Generally Top Gear chooses not to wade into such Twitterstorms, but when Musk boasted his new car, the Model 3, was faster than BMW M3, well, that was a claim we couldn’t allow to pass unchecked. So Chris assembled the Model 3 and its very fast rivals at the track, and set about putting Mr Musk’s boasts to the test. Did you know? The first part of the film was shot overnight in central London and Canary Wharf between 6pm and 5am Lightbulbs were rigged to overpower and burst around the Tesla Model 3 in an art sequence shot in a photographic studio

Save Money: Good Diet

Psychopath with Piers Morgan

This week we continue our countdown of the our top 10 favourite family dishes, and we challenge chef Phil Vickery to wow us with his own super healthy, low cost and of course mouth-watering version. Which delicious dish will claim number seven in our countdown? Sian investigates what’s money well spent in our shopping baskets – this week she tackles oils with nutrition therapist Ian Marber. Whether you drizzle, roast or fry, which oil is best? How do they compare in terms of nutrition, health benefits and taste, and which are best value for money? Alongside dietician Linia Patel, Sian also looks at juicing versus blending – which is the best way of getting your five a day? And Linia creates her ultimate smoothie. Plus, we’ll be asking whether it is possible to get a taste of luxury at affordable prices? This time it’s the ultimate luxury – champagne. Our group of trusty taste testers will take part in a blind taste test of two award-winning products, one significantly cheaper than the other. Which will get their taste buds tingling? Later, a family put four different veg peelers through their paces to see which they think is easiest to use and worth spending money on.

“Even during the time that I was stabbing her, I was struggling with myself to stop” Paris Bennett “He’ll [Paris] will be nice, personable, polite. He is very charming when he wants to be. I mean he is a psychopath“ Charity Bennett (Paris’ mother) “I think viewers at the end of this are going to be absolutely stunned that somebody like this could potentially be back on the streets in a few years time.” Piers Morgan In this brand new, ground-breaking and revelatory 1 x 60 minute documentary made by Plum Pictures, Piers Morgan ventures behind bars for an extraordinary encounter with diagnosed psychopath Paris Bennett, a man who is more intelligent, more cunning and more manipulative than any criminal Piers has met before. In 2007, Paris – a 13-year-old with a genius level IQ - stabbed to death his 4-year-old sister, Ella. This was no impulsive fit of rage, but a cold, deliberate act planned for weeks beforehand and born of festering resentment. In Bennett’s first interview on British television he admits to Piers that the murder was driven by a calculated desire to inflict pain and misery upon his mother, Charity – who in a unique format twist is watching the encounter as it unfolds on a TV monitor in a nearby room. Paris Bennett said: “Yes, I did commit a monstrous crime but does that one mistake define my entire life...I don’t think it does”. Charity has stood by her son even though she fears that when he gets out, Paris could still harbour violent intentions towards her. Unlike many of the American murderers Piers has interviewed, it is likely that one day he will walk out of prison a free man. Despite his heinous crime, Paris is first eligible for parole in 8 years’ time. The situation is now even more complex as Charity has a younger son, Phoenix. Charity fears that, after his release, they both could be a target for Paris’ psychopathic resentment. Experts have advised Charity to go into hiding not only to protect herself but Phoenix, too. Soon, Charity may face an incredibly tough choice: to walk away from the son she has stood by for over 10 years in order to protect her youngest child. As Piers burrows into the workings of Paris’ psyche over one intense hour, the interview is also viewed by a former elite FBI profiler and one of America’s leading criminologists. At key moments they forensically analyse Paris’ answers and give us key insights into the workings of his mind. Dr Casey Jordan said: “Psychopathy can’t be cured. He will not, can not change. He can be managed which is why he is in a prison but it will never go away. In my opinion, he should never get out.” With a story that will leave any parent genuinely torn over what they would do in Charity’s situation - and expert analysis that adds a fascinating layer to the prison encounter - Piers’ interview with Paris lays bare the workings of a dangerous mind, and the terrible toll a violent psychopath can inflict on those who love them the most.

Jack, Victor and the rest of the Craiglang gang are back for the much-anticipated ninth - and final - series of Still Game, as the iconic comedy goes into retirement. Created, written by and starring Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill, the final series celebrates growing old disgracefully as the riotous pensioners rail against everything modern life has to throw at them. Debuting on BBC Scotland’s new digital channel and on BBC One later in the year, this first episode sees Craiglang hail a new internet sensation, while Jack and Victor decide it’s high time to get tech savvy. When Isa is mugged Winston comes to her rescue, little realising his heroic deed is being filmed, turning him into an internet sensation. Winston initially downplays the attention, but when Methadone Mick points out the advantages of internet fame, he embraces his new-found celebrity status. Meanwhile, Jack and Victor decide they won’t be yesterday’s men and buy themselves mobile phones. When internet whizz Isa shows the friends how popular Winston is online, Jack and Victor turn their hand at creating viral videos. However, they soon discover the internet is a fickle master and fame fades fast. This must-see final series reunites the most popular characters alongside Jack (Ford Kiernan) and Victor (Greg Hemphill) including Isa (Jane McCarry), Navid (Sanjeev Kohli), Boabby (Gavin Mitchell), Winston (Paul Riley) and Tam (Mark Cox). This episode also stars Scott Reid as Methadone Mick, Martin Compston and Gianni Capaldi as mobile phone salesmen and a cameo from presenter Des Clarke.

Trevor McDonald’s Indian Adventure c h o i c e Train ITV1, 20.00

The veteran newsman boards the Maharajas Express – an extraordinary train that recreates the heritage of India’s richest kings – for an eight day tour of India, taking in its most wondrous sights. Thirty years after he last visited as a foreign correspondent, he sees how India is rapidly transforming itself into an economic superpower, complete with high-tech factories, five-star hotels and the most expensive home on the planet. But, as he makes his way from teeming, overcrowded Mumbai to the modern capital, New Delhi, he also witnesses the poverty that continues to sit side-byside with the country’s new-found wealth.

The Family Brain Games BBC2, 20.00

In semi-finals week, the six remaining families will be battling it out to be crowned the ultimate winner of The Family Brain Games 2019, all under the watchful eyes of leading neuroscientist Dr Hannah Critchlow. So far the victorious families have been scrutinised through intense heats. Now they will be taking on their toughest set of challenges yet: each face a further five rounds of brain-teasing challenges which have been created in association with neuroscientist Dr Adam Hampshire from Imperial College, London, and are designed to test their individual and collective intelligence like never before. Tonight is the first of the three semi-finals. Two of last week’s winning families return to the Games Lab to take on even tougher challenges, which test their vocabulary, reasoning, logic, 3D manipulation and communication skills.

The Planets BBC2, 21.00

06:25................................. Cheers

In the final episode of The Planets Brian journeys to the remotest part of the solar system, a place that the most mysterious planets call home. These worlds remain shadowy for a simple reason: beyond Saturn we have only ever visited the most distant planets once. Uranus - barely visible to the naked eye - was once thought to be the furthest planet from the Sun. But with the telescope and some careful viewing we discovered it had a companion: Neptune. Thanks to a rare alignment of the planets in 1976, Voyager 2 was sent for our only flyby of these ice worlds. There we discovered far more vibrant planets than were imagined. Even at such cold temperatures great storms whip around these frozen worlds, which are home to spectacular moons and intricate ring systems. After a few hours of observation at each planet, Voyager 2 left them behind. We have never returned. For decades that’s as far as space exploration got, until 2015 when NASA’s New Horizons probe pushed the frontier even further into space, with its extraordinary passage to the dwarf planet Pluto. Once again all our assumptions about this distant world were wrong. Pluto is alive with ice volcanoes, dunes, and geysers - even a sub-surface ocean. What’s more, we discovered that Pluto isn’t alone out there - there’s a plethora of weird icy companions which together are redefining everything we thought we knew about the strange, distant reaches of our solar system.

Mr Field (Mark Bonnar) suspects Richard, Arthur (Timothy Spall) and Kathleen (Keeley Hawes) are behind the attack on his dog and office. General Armstrong (William Gaminara) invites Samuel to join him at his club, and explains his theory to Samuel: there’s a cabal of disaffected people, a coalition between once-important men who now feel themselves sidelined, and some rogue officers from MI5 and MI6 who believe there is massive Russian penetration in the secret service. Kathleen, Richard and David (Greg Austin) arrive back at the house. David still assures them that he is not Anthony. She takes him to the boarding school to see Tezler, but he is still adamant that they have mistaken his identity. Joel (Fode Simbo) and Hannah (Lily Sacofsky) go to the dance hall, where Joel is attacked by a group of boys and a large fight breaks out -which sees Hannah punched in the face.

Gregg Wallace visits the UK’s largest sports shoe factory to see how 3,500 pairs of trainers are made every day, before meeting the man who comes up with the latest designs. Cherry Healey gets hands-on in a tannery, helping to process thousands of rawhides into finished leather for the nation’s shoes, and finds out how a ballet company painstakingly create 250,000 ballet shoes per year. Ruth Goodman reveals how, when the sewing machine was first introduced into shoe factories in the mid19th century, traditional shoemakers went on strike to rebel against joining a restrictive production line.

5G network is now launched in Spain

MOBILE phone and internet operator Vodafone has announced a 5G roll-out from last Saturday in 15 Spanish cities, including Barcelona and Madrid.

Vodafone chief executive António Coimbra said the company was the first network provider to offer 5G in the country, and also one of the first countries in Europe to do so. The 5G network offers 10 times the capacity, and an ability to connect 100 times as many devices, as well as a download speed of 1

gigabyte per second (Gps). The firm expects to be able to increase its 5G coverage across the country, outside major cities, and to double its download speed to 2Gps, within a year. It is operated through Huawei as core provider and, to a lesser extent and over fewer areas, Ericsson. No additional cost will apply to mobilephone users, who will be upgraded automatically if they are already on the Vodafone Illimitada Total or Vodafone One Ilimitada Total (“unlimited”) packages. But customers on cheaper tariffs will need to move up to one of these to enjoy the benefits.

Disabled people simply can’t leave their homes

MANY people with disabilities in Spain, including the older sector, have been trapped indoors because there is a lack of support, according to a shocking charity study.

Researchers for the Spanish Confederation of People with Physical and Organic Disability (COCEMFE) examined the living situation of 2.5m people with physical disabilities. They discovered that more than 1.8 million of those surveyed needed assistance to leave their home, while those without support are condemned to stay inside. “We found people imprisoned in their own home through the lack of accessibility in their own building,” said Laura

López, director of Fundación Mutua de Propietarios, a group which collaborated with COCEMFE on the report. Spain passed a law in 2013, which made home-owner associations responsible for ensuring their buildings were accessible to all. But despite the law, a UNESCO report later found that only 0.6% of Spain’s 9.8m residential buildings met accessibility standards for those with physical disabilities. A United Nations’ committee for the rights of people with disabilities, has also levelled criticism against Spain. The committee, comprising 18 independent experts from around the world, said: “Measures taken to ensure universal accessibility, particularly for private buildings, have been insufficient or ineffective.”

Two million people could join the homeless brigade

Millions of people need aid from charity

MORE than two million people in Spain, accounting for 4% of households, live with the uncertainty of becoming homeless.

The 8th Foessa Report on Social Exclusion and Development in Spain, which revealed the statistic, noted an “entrenchment” of social exclusion. The study, presented at the Madrid headquarters of Catholic charity Caritas Spain, was prepared by a team of 125 researchers, from 30 universities and 13 research organisations. It was based on a survey of 29,000 people in 11,600 households.

The data shows that a total of 8.5m people in Spain are in a situation of social exclusion. This is 18.4% of the population (almost seven points less than in 2013) but still 1.2m more than before the crisis. In addition, 4.1m suffer severe, social exclusion, and more than 1.8m are what is known as “expellees”. These people, three times as many as in 2007, when they numbered 600,000, have so many day-to-day problems that they need urgent help. The report’s lead writer, Guillermo Fernández, said: “Social exclusion is becoming entrenched. This is the hangover of the financial crisis.

“It is what we call the stagnant society: a group of people for whom the social mobility elevator no longer works, and is not even able to stop on the first floor.” For the first time since before the crisis, housing has become the main factor in social exclusion, because of rising rents, which, in the last two years, have increased by an average of 30%. This puts it ahead of unemployment, which had been the most important factor in the past few years. According to the report, 14% of working people are in a situation of social exclusion, while one in three temporary contracts lasts under seven days.

Independent rebels remove Spanish flag from town hall

A COUNCIL in Cataluña has taken down the Spanish flag, flying on its Town Hall, after an administration which includes pro-independence parties, took power last Saturday. Footage posted to social media showed the Spanish flag being taken off Altafulla Town Hall, in Tarragona Province, to be replaced with a flag bearing the town’s crest. The pro-independence Esquerra Republicana de Cataluyna (ERC) now governs in the town,

alongside the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the locally-focused Ara Altafulla. The local ERC posted pictures to Twitter, which also showed that a yellow ribbon and a poster with the words: “Free political

prisoners”, have been put up on the town hall. A yellow ribbon is a symbol of the Catalan independence movement, and the sign refers to the 12 politicians and activists, detained in connection with the 2017 secession push.

Brothers lose their fizz Cocaine-traffickers after champagne fiasco took mind-blowing

mountains of cash!

TWO brothers have been arrested after trying to steal no fewer than 11 champagne bottles from a supermarket. The Romanian pair, aged 41 and 42, attempted to hide the bottles in a cycling suit, worn by one of them under a jacket. They thought they had got away with

it after removing the security tags from each bottle, which were then stuffed down the cycling top while in a Fuengirola hypermarket in at around 2.30pm earlier this month. But the not-so-bubbly pair, who failed to do their homework, were being watched all along by security guards, on video surveillance cameras. One of the brothers

was seen removing the alarm tags from the bottles, worth €400 in total, by using a large magnet and a sharp object. He then placed the tags in a trolley, being pushed by his sibling, who was then seen stuffing them down his top. Delighted Police, who had little to do, arrested the pair on site after being alerted by the guards.

NO fewer than 25 people were collared in a huge National Police crackdown on a Costa del Sol drugtrafficking family.

They are believed to have controlled six narcotic gangs, while supplying other local traffickers as well. The police, who launched several raids in Estepona and El Puerto Santa Maria, Cadiz, seized cocaine weighing 4kg, as well as two guns, 55 vehicles and almost €140,000 in cash. But it was a far-from-lucky haul because officers, for seven months, had been tracking a family clan, dedicated to selling narcotics in the Cadiz area. Guns were found in properties searched by police, and the Estepona dealers, who travelled weekly to El Puerto Santa Maria, selling an average of six kilos of cocaine. An exclusive interview with El Pais newspaper last year, revealed that a kilo of cocaine cost around €28,000, which meant the family were selling the drug, worth €168,000 to them, each week. With one gram selling for up to €80 a wrap on the street, it also meant they were raking in a €312,000 profit. The clan ran their business as a family operation, the tricks of the “trade” being handed from parents to children, said police. And clan members were each dedicated to different jobs, from selling, distribution, collecting and the so-called “cutting”: mixing the drugs with other substances to make their product stretch further, and garner more profits. The family used homes as hideouts, and for storing drugs, and they had workers placed in hotspots to alert them to police activity during transport. But the probe, lasting months, also led police to the family’s suppliers, comprising a 12-strong group, working out of Estepona.

The dirty dozen were actually playing on a higher level, selling 20kg of cocaine per week, with a street value of up to €1.6m. According to police, the huge volumes of cash were laundered through a car-dealership which was, in fact, owned by the two group leaders, who had hired some frontmen to run it. They had also invested in several properties in Estepona and Marbella. They lived nothing short of the high life, staying in luxury hotels and splashing €100,000 on luxury cars and other vehicles. But the investigation came to a head this month when police intercepted a cocaine shipment of 1.7kg between the suppliers and the family clan. Several homes were searched and some 25 people were arrested, but just six have so far been jailed. Across 20 properties police seized 3.2kg of cocaine, 30 grams of heroin, 2.8kg of marijuana, 190 cannabis plants and 166.8g of hashish. Two money-counting machines, 49 vehicles and six motorbikes were also confiscated.

Spanish child murderer hired by English school AN English primary school, unwittingly, hired a convicted child-murderer from Spain’s Andalucia as a teaching assistant.

Iria Suarez Gonzalez, then 16 and now 35, was arrested after she and a friend, 17, killed 16-year-old classmate Klara Garcia in 2000 by stabbing her 32 times. Klara was killed in a field in San Fernando, Cadiz, and, according to media reports at the time, the pair wanted to know “what it would feel like to kill someone”. But Suarez was then able to work for 10 months at West Oxford Primary School, in the affluent suburb of Osney, by exploiting a loophole, which enabled her to hide her criminal past. She was released from prison in 2006, applied for the job in April that year, and started

five months later. In July 2017, she left the school, which has 230 children, before an anonymous tip-off was made to Crimestoppers, and Oxford County Council was alerted in October. In February 2018 she was then arrested and brought

before Oxford Crown Court on charges of false representation. She was set to stand trial for not acknowledging the murder in her job application, but her case has now been dropped. In Spain, convictions by

minors are wiped from their criminal record after 10 years, which enabled Suarez to start a new life in the UK, because she had committed murder when she was 16. The CPS dropped the case through lack of evidence, but the case has now been

reported after restrictions were lifted. A CPS spokesperson said: “We keep all cases under continuous review so we can consider any new information that comes to light. “In this instance, it emerged that Ms Suarez-Gonzalez’ conviction was spent, which resulted in the charges being dropped.” An Oxford County Council spokesperson said: “Recruitment is not our responsibility, but the responsibility of the individual school. “The school had followed safer recruitment processes in terms of the recruitment of this individual. There is a clear recruitment process in place for schools to follow, in line with safer recruitment procedures.” Following the murder, Cadiz Juvenile Court ordered the families of the two killers to pay €246,145 to the victim’s family.

Catalan independence aim was not ‘a crime’ THE trial of 12 defendants, following the 2017 Catalan independence push, has closed after 52 sessions in Spain’s Supreme Court. Defendants, including former Catalan Generalitat Vice-President Oriol Junqueras, gave their final testimonies in the case last week. Junqueras told the court that voting for Cataluña to become independent was not “a crime”, and he called for the issue to be addressed through dialogue in future. “I sincerely believe that the best thing for everyone would be to return the issue to the terrain of good politics, which it should never have left,” he said. Raul Romeva, the Catalan Generalitat’s former foreign

relations spokesperson, also standing trial, said those who chose to defend the unity of Spain “through force” would not win over independence supporters. He added: “Whatever happens, we will continue to extend a hand, even to those who insult us.” The trial has involved the testimonies of witnesses who have included former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and his ex-deputy Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. Both were in office when Cataluña held the independence referendum in October 2017, which was declared illegal by Spain’s Constitutional Court. The defendants face up to 25 years in prison if found guilty.

Former IRA couple purchased Correos in the properties to mask smuggling post to SE Asia TWO former members of the IRA were each jailed for two years, having been found guilty of laundering profits from tobaccosmuggling, through property purchases.

Donna Maguire, once dubbed the Angel of Death and Europe’s MostDangerous Woman, along with her husband, Leonard Hardy, were jailed for two years by the High Court in Madrid for the scheme. They were arrested at the Lanzarote hotel in which they were staying in 2014, and the Madrid’s High Court was that until the time of his arrest, Hardy was engaged in “large-scale tobacco smuggling”. He was said to “the head of an organisation,” which started operating in 2005, and began to be investigated by the UK customs service in 2010, in Operation Bayweek. The judgement said: “The accused, either directly, or together with his wife (…), either using her or the Vinnea company, concealed the profits made from the smuggling of tobacco by

laundering it in real-estate investments.” Vinnea was an import/export business run by Maguire. The judgement noted that the known income of the couple could not explain how they managed to spend €987,410 on three properties, one in Alicante and the other two in Malaga. As well as the prison sentence, the court ordered the seizure of the properties, or assets and cash of an equivalent value if they had been sold on. The properties consisted of a house in Orihuela (Alicante), one in Nerja and a commercial property in Manilva (both Malaga). Spanish authorities said in a January 2015 statement: “National Police officers have smashed an organisation

involved in smuggling tobacco and alcohol. “Among those arrested are the organisation’s alleged ringleader and his wife, both ex-IRA members.” Hardy, from Belfast, was sentenced to six years prison for trying to blow up a British Army base at Osnabruck, Germany, in 1989. He was released because the offence happened before the 1998 Good Friday Agreement. Maguire, once Britain’s MostWanted Woman, received a nine-year sentence in Germany in 1995 after being found guilty of attempted murder and explosives offences, in connection with the attack. She was released because she had spent six years on remand.

SPAIN’S national post office has branched out to south-east Asia, investing €5.7m in creating a new jointventure company with Kerry Logistics and GFS.

The first of these is an international logistics corporation, operating in the region, and the second is one of the main parcel collection-anddelivery services in China. Having revamped its logo recently, and announced a “modern, international focus”, the Spanish post office, known as Correos, is actively seeking to boost its activity beyond national borders, beginning in Portugal earlier this year. Now, it wants to take advantage of the growing online trade industry, of which China leads the field

worldwide, with over 50 billion parcels changing hands last year alone. Of these, 8.8% came from, or were sent to, other countries. This means that, based on China alone, and without taking into account the rest of the south-eastern part of the continent, Correos is able to access a market which exports over four billion packages a year, with annual growth forecast at over 20% between now and the year 2022. Correos wants to acquire a market position as “key operator” in parcel delivery, and expects to be able to handle up to half-a million packages a day. The company will set up a packaging, reception and sorting office in a part of China which is just 100km away from Hong Kong, to provide access to the rest of the continent.

How to stop the rot IT’S summer all year round in Tenerife, and fruit salads and fresh berries are plentiful. You can find strawberries in your local grocery and farmers’ market, but, no matter how fresh you get them, berries always seem to go bad after a few days at home. It doesn’t seem to matter how quickly you eat them, there always tend to be a few leftovers in the container, turning fuzzy and slimy. Luckily, however, farmers have finally offered some advice on how to keep strawberries fresh for longer. Learn this simple technique, and you’ll never have to face a smelly, mushy, half-rotten carton of strawberries again! Strawberries are one of

the finest fruits, but they are one of the hardest to keep fresh. There’s something about this ground-dwelling plant that makes them difficult to keep delicious after harvesting.

While on the vine, they are easily accessible to insects, but also to any and all bacteria that dwell above the soil. Strawberries are extremely susceptible to disease and fungi,

so even when you wash away the dust and dirt, you might be leaving behind a more destructive evil. These lingering bacteria and fungi can turn your beautiful supply of bright, happy strawberries into miserable, squishy messes, overnight. This means that you not only need to rinse off the dirt, but you also need to disinfect your strawberries! While it might sound like a daunting, possiblytoxic task, disinfecting your strawberries is much easier (and safer) than cleaning your house. You simply need to grab a few things that are most likely to be already in your kitchen: *A large bowl (or bucket) *A strainer (colander, salad spinner, steamer, etc) *Vinegar *Clean, filtered water *Paper towels *Clean container with breathing holes *As many strawberries as you desire Start by placing as many strawberries as you want (or will fit) in your large bowl. You want to be sure they don’t go as high as the top of the bowl, because you’re going to be submerging all the berries. You want to be sure your bowl is big enough to hold both berries and liquid. Next, mix one part

vinegar with five parts water in the bowl. For instance, if you use one cup of vinegar, you want to add five cups of water. Be sure to completely cover the strawberries. They sometimes have a tendency to float, so, if this happens, you can either weigh them down or give the bowl a few good stirs. You want every berry to soak in the water and vinegar mixture for three to five minutes, at the very least. Because vinegar is a natural and potent disinfectant, letting the strawberries sit in the mixture will allow the bacteria and fungi to be rinsed off and killed. Don’t worry about the berries tasting like vinegar after wards - it’ll wash off easily. Once the berries have soaked for a satisfactory

amount of time, strain the liquid out and shake off as much excess water as possible. You want the strawberries to be as dry as possible, because the liquid is another cause of rotten strawberries. Moisture is the perfect place for fungi and bacteria to find a home, so you want to use the paper towels to dry your strawberries, or lay them out so they can properly air dry. Again, make sure the berries are perfectly dry, before placing them in a container and refrigerating them. Keeping them fresher for longer will increase your pleasure in eating them, and save you from throwing out untold amounts of wasted strawberries. Just remember to keep them clean, disinfected, and dry!

’ave an avocado!

By Val Sainsbury THE avocado is the fruit of the avocado tree, scientifically known as Persea americana. This fruit is prized for its high nutrient value, and is added to various dishes because of its good flavour and rich texture. It is the main ingredient in guacamole.

There are many types of avocado, and they vary in shape and colour, from pearshaped to round, and green to black. The most popular variety is the Hass. It’s often called “alligator pear”, which is very apt, because it tends to be pearshaped, and has green, bumpy skin like an alligator. The yellow-green flesh inside the fruit is eaten, but the skin and seed are discarded. In recent years, avocados have become the new favourite fruit of Americans. They are very nutritious, are rich in healthy fats and contain a wide variety of nutrients, including 20 different vitamins and minerals, vital to the normal functions of various bodily processes. Many people enjoy better health by eating avocados.

You will get more nutrients and be safer from metabolic syndrome, the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems, such as diabetes and stroke. You will also have a healthier weight and BMI (body mass index), thinner waistline, and higher concentrations of good cholesterol. The improved health may come from how avocados improve the absorption of antioxidants and nutrients that dissolve in fat. The healthy fats in avocados and their oil can increase the absorption of beta-carotene, lycopene, and other fatsoluble carotenoids. Eating an avocado with a meal increases the satiation of a person, who will be less

inclined to eat more food for up to five hours. Benefit the brain, eyes and gums Avocados can be considered to be brain food. One of their many healthy fatty acids is oleic acid. Along with other omega-9 fatty acids, oleic acid can improve cognition and memory. People at risk of depression can lift their mood by eating avocados. The fruit’s monounsaturated fats can improve depression, both by themselves, and by normalising the intake of fat that also affects mood. Furthermore, avocados also contain plenty of folate. A 2015 study showed that folate supports dopamine and serotonin that regulate mood. Those brain-boosting nutri-

ents may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. The bioactive compounds in avocados are essential when it comes to preventing and even curing these brain diseases. The high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in avocados are great for the eyes of ageing people. These carotenoids protect and support the health of cells in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin can also restore macular pigment that depletes with age. Unlike many other foods, eating lots of avocados won’t increase the risk of periodontal disease. On the contrary, the fruit can prevent the onset of gum diseases. Avocados offer pain-relieving,

protective, and nutritional benefits. Specific substances in avocados can alleviate the symptoms of osteoarthritis. The natural ingredients can ease the pain of patients afflicted with arthritic hips or knees. The cholesterol-reducing properties of avocados also protect against metabolic syndrome. By preventing the interconnected health issues that collectively comprise the syndrome, avocados can reduce the chances of associated complications like cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes. Some of the compounds in avocados display antibacterial activity. They can prevent food poisoning caused by E.coli and other pathogenic microbes that often contaminate food. Other chemicals in the fruit shield the liver from injuries. They can prevent alcohol and other toxins from damaging hepatic cells. They can even protect against the ravages of the hepatitis C virus. Avocados are good for anyone, but they are especially great for pregnant women. In addition to its rich amounts of fat-soluble antioxidants, folate, and monounsaturated fats, the fruit also has lots of fibre and potassium. Most maternal diets are deficient in these vital nutrients, so eating avocados can improve the health of mothers and babies, ensure safe births, and increase the nutrients in breast milk.

Ocean-friendly trips will be an eye-opener P R O Y E C T O FarFalle is an environmentallyfriendly tourism company with a difference, here in Tenerife.

It combines a boat trip out to sea from its Los Gigantes base, along with oceanographer Carmen Melendez, who founded the company. The trip raises awareness and a conscience, demonstrating the im-

portance of conserving, caring for and respecting our environment, which is, obviously, aimed at the ocean’s marine life. During the tour, customers can collect samples of microplastics and analyse them on the boat, in its small laboratory, which really should interest them, especially the youngsters. Proyecto FarFalle officials running the trips hope to foster a critical understanding among participants towards actions that cause the degradation of the sea, and the way in which they can change customs and habits. All the samples will contribute to the Mycotrophic Project of the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, regarding

marine microplastics in the ocean surrounding the Canary Islands. In addition, participants can monitor marine mammals in the area, as well as studying their

behaviour, activity patterns and group structure, as well as recording their acoustic activity with a hydrophone, which detects sounds under water. And, thanks to scientific

tourism, the company allocates 70% of each ticket sold for research. Tickets, costing between 90-150 euros, are available from https// www.proyectofarfalle. com

GAFFERS # Team Hollywood maintained their excellent start with a 7-1 success against Mad Hatters. But a special mention goes to Pocket Rocket Janice, who hit a brilliant 90 finish with 18, and two double-18s.

Suters 20:30 Crew were not at the party when Pas O Nadas A came visiting, with Daddy Cool and Luc notching maximums. They were on top form as they whitewashed the home team 8-0. But Pas O Nadas International secured their first win by breezing

past Ourplace Playboys 6-2, with Tartan Spartan Dave contributing a 119 check-out. Scooters & Chevys A visited The Loch-In Bullseyes and found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-0 scoreline, Steve hitting 180 and Daren a bull double-16 finish. But more accurate check-outs by the away team would have led to a respectable defeat. Pete’s maximum helped The Pub to an encouraging start, as Grizzly’s boys helped themselves to an 8-0 whitewash against Emerald B. At Sandys, the Bookie Boys and Bandits clashed, and the Boys’ experience shone through as they won 6-2, comfortably.

In Division 2, Ourplace Breakaways beat local rivals Marilyns 7-1, although Fudder was, in his own words, “not very good”. Pas O Nadas overcame Sundowners 7-1, and The Club House, who visited Scooters & Chevys B, came away with an identical result. Ourplace Playgirls recorded a brilliant 6-2 win against Naughty Nauta’s for their first success of the season, and they’re looking for more! Club Activo, victorious in the trebles, just pipped Pink Elephant 5-3, while Emerald Lounge entertained Palms Sports Bar, who took home a 6-2 victory.

Toyota’s second-placed team are flat out of luck THE Toyota Gazoo racing team won the 87th Le Mans 24 Hours with a one-two finish, yet their two cars finished in the wrong order after a terrible mix-up in the pits.

In a dramatic final hour, Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Fernando Alonso, in the No.8 TS050 Hybrid, defended their Le Mans crown and secured the drivers’ World Championship in the process, but only through a huge mistake in the pits! The trio won by 16.9secs from team-mates Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López in the No.7, after the latter had to pit for a puncture. Unfortunately, their crew changed the wrong wheel in a blunder that robbed them of victory, when they had to pit again to get the correct wheel fitted. Honda said “a sensor malfunction” caused the mistake on the 367th lap, yet the team had held a lead of over two minutes before the double pitstop, and a slow lap with the punctured tyre scuppered their hopes.

This meant Alonso and his team-mates were able to defend the Le Mans 24 hours title they won last year, but had to admit luck was on their side. In any case, they had the WEC Championship in the bag by that stage. The No.7 crew had controlled much of the contest, having set the fastest-ever Le Mans race lap of 3mins 17.297secs. They started the race from pole position, following Kamui’s fastest qualifying lap, with the No.8 starting just behind. That set the scene for an excitingly-close battle for overall victory between the two 1,000PS TS050 Hybrids, with momentum

swinging one way and then the other. After 12 hours, the two Toyotas were separated by only 8.6 secs. But during the night, the No.7 seized a decisive advantage as the sister car faced an aerodynamic imbalance. That was caused by bodywork damage, through the rigours of a tough, flat-out contest, although both cars were always on the same lap. As the final hours approached, the gap remained relatively stable, at around two minutes, and the focus switched to bringing them home safely. And all appeared to be going to plan until the

No.7 experienced its pitstop drama and flat-tyre circuit, enabling Kazuki to take the lead with under an hour to go. Fernando Alonso said: “It is amazing to win Le Mans for the second time, but the win came really unexpectedly. We did not have the pace to win this race against car No.7 on track.” He added: “Today, luck was a big factor and this is part of motorsport. I feel for my team-mates, who are actually more than team-mates… they are friends. “They would have deserved the victory, but the race chose us to win it. Our main goal was to win the World Championship and we are very proud that we

have achieved this.” Team President Hisatake Murata said: “We have an unusual feeling because we have won our second Le Mans. But everyone in the team is sorry

for Mike, Kamui, José and the No.7 crew, who would have been deserving winners. “We will investigate the exact cause of this issue in the coming days, to avoid a repeat. “Nevertheless, I am proud of the overall performance, as well as the team spirit we showed throughout the race, and also in the difficult moments in the final hour. “Congratulations to the new World Champions Sébastien, Kazuki and Fernando, and also on their second Le Mans victory. “This was a dramatic end to an incredible season for Toyota Gazoo Racing, and we look forward to defending our titles next season.”

Murray doubles partner’s link to match-fixing probe

FELICIANO Lopez, who is Andy Murray’s doubles comeback partner, has been named in a Wimbledon matchfixing investigation. The Spaniard, 37, was set to accompany Murray yesterday (Thursday) at the Queen’s Club tournament in London. It could be make or break for Murray, who made a tentative return to tennis, following hip surgery five months ago. Lopez, the one-time world No.12, and former playing partner Marc Lopez, are accused of match-fixing during Wimbledon 2017. Feliciano has denied all allegations against him, and says he has never met those at the centre of the probe, former Real Madrid star Carlos Aranda and ex-Leeds player Raul Bravo. “I absolutely deny any link with events described in relation to the allegations of match-fixing,” said Lopez. Spanish police intercepted a phone call, in which Aranda discussed getting 50% commission on bets placed on the Lopez pair losing their first match of the 2017 Wimbledon Championships. Spanish paper El Confidencial’s report suggests that Lopez and Lopez threw the match, which they lost in four sets against Australian underdogs John-Patrick Smith and Matt Reid. Lopez gave statements to the media about his alleged crimes, after beating Marton Fucsovics in the Queen’s Club singles on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, all tennis players are public figures, and we are used to having our good name used beyond our control,” he said. Murray’s camp, and the Tennis Integrity Unit, both declined to comment.
