Battered and burned to death after a night shift

Plane’s false bomb scare
AN aeroplane crew, preparing to take off from Fuerteventura Airport, were forced to evacuate everyone on board, after receiving a bomb threat on Tuesday afternoon. The flight, to Santiago de Compostela, was aborted because of the scare, which turned out to be false. Both passengers and flight crew evacuated the Vueling airplane on the runway, but the situation was soon resolved, and the airport returned to normal.
Woman’s sea rescue Continued from Front The tragic incident occurred at the communal garage of his San Isidro home, in Edificio San Miguel, Calle Los Gonzalez, to where he and his long-time partner had moved, recently. The victim, known as Gabino, was found battered to death inside the garage, and sources reveal that he was discovered with numerous injuries, caused by a beating, along with several burns across his body. Guardia Civil officers also believe that he was tortured, severely, before being killed. Gabino, acknowledged to be a hard-working taxi driver, had been on the night shift in the days leading up to his death. That meant he finished work at around 3-4am. He would then park up the taxi and climb into his 30-yearold classic, white-seat, Ford
Transit, to make his way home. On the night of his murder, it was thought that he drove into his garage to park his Transit, as usual, when his attackers jumped on him, beating and burning him to death. His body was discovered at 6.30am by other neighbours living in the apartment block, but the motive was unknown, as we went to press. Yet the violence used to murder the unsuspecting taxi driver was unquestionable. Granadilla’s Local Police were informed, immediately, and several officers were dispatched to Calle Los Gonzalez, upon arrival. The area was cordoned off, promptly, to prevent the evidence being tampered with, while Guardia Civil officers from Granadilla and Las Americas were informed, as well as the UOPJ specialised unit, who have
joined forces to take charge of the investigation. Forensic teams were also at the scene, collecting the relevant evidence and taking detailed photographs, until late on Wednesday evening. And, for now, the courts have decreed secrecy during the investigation proceedings. Gabino, who had been married previously, had one daughter with his former wife, from whom he had been divorced for many years. The daughter and her partner arrived at the scene, where she was described as being extremely distraught as she hugged friends and relatives. She was allowed to go to the garage entrance, where she received what information was known about the crime. The woman left the scene with her partner, shortly afterwards.
Captured drug-dealer gave officers big shock A 44-YEAR-OLD man, with no known criminal record, was arrested by the National Police at Lanzarote Airport for drug-trafficking.
He was spotted by the officers while on his way to the luggage collection area inside Terminal 1, and their suspicions were raised after picking up on how nervous he was. For that reason, he was stopped and identified, and officers then searched his case, discovering various substances, already packaged for distribution.
And, as well as the substances found, the officers also discovered that the individual was in possession of two mobile phones, a tablet and 3,820 euros in cash. Following the arrest, the officers searched the man’s home and found that he also had Viagra pills, Speed and
Poppers there. To the surprise of officers, they later discovered that the man also advertised his drug offers on a specific website. Along with the complete official police report, the man was presented before the judicial authorities at the Arrecife courts.
A WOMAN, close to drowning on Tuesday, was saved by a National Police officer, together with a colleague from Adeje Local Police. The incident happened at Arona’s Las Vistas beach, in Los Cristianos, just before 5.30pm, and the officers witnessed how she was struggling in the water, and close to drowning. The National Police officer, unaware that she was said to have mental-health issues, began to remove his uniform as he ran towards the water, and the off-duty Adeje policeman followed him in, rescuing the woman after a big struggle to get her to safety. The spontaneous rescue had been a dangerous task for them, but other National Police officers were standing by to assist, if necessary.
Man, 83, struck by car is in critical condition AN elderly man is in a critical condition after being hit by a car, violently, in Gran Canaria on Tuesday afternoon at Lomo de los Ingleses, in Vega de San Mateo. The emergency services received a call at around 4pm, requesting urgent medical assistance, and an ambulance was sent to the scene. When the medics arrived, they checked the 83-year-old pensioner, and it was soon apparent that he had suffered head injuries. He was promptly taken the Dr Negrín University Hospital, in the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas, for further treatment and observation. A 54-year-old woman, who was in the area and witnessed the accident, suffered a panic attack and was also taken away by ambulance, to a nearby medical centre.
Teenage driver’s car rolled over and over
A YOUNGSTER, aged 19, was injured last Sunday after his vehicle rolled over a number of times on the TF-1, near Candelaria, on the southbound lane, just before 7am. A call was made to the emergency services, and an ambulance was sent on its way to the accident site, where medics assisted the injured teenager. He had suffered bruising and was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment and observation.

Health Service fined €1.2m over its medical negligence THE Canarian Health Service (SCS) has been ordered to pay €1.2m to the parents of a child, left severely disabled because of “incomprehensible medical negligence”.
The Canary Islands’ Superior Court of Justice (TSJC) fixed this compensation, the second-highest ever awarded in Spain for medical errors, after considering the parents’ appeal. A lower court had merely ordered the SCS to process the parents’ claim and give them an answer, dismissing the case without even studying it. But the higher court
considered it appropriate to assess the merits of the claim, without returning the file to the public health system. And it considered proven that the “severe spastic tetraparesis cerebral palsy”, from which the child now suffers, and that makes him dependent on aid for life, was down to the “incomprehensible negligence during the hours following his birth”. The court heard that protocols state that signs of jaundice within the first 24 hours of birth must be considered pathological, and must be examined and treated urgently. In this case “the yellowish colour of the child was appreciated at the time of birth”. However, the newborn

was not examined by any paediatrician at Lanzarote’s Hospital Doctor Molina Orosa, until the following day. And when one did comply, he merely indicated that the baby should be put in the sun. According to the judgement: “No test was recommended to try to determine the cause of the jaundice, which prevented its subsequent evolution from being assessed.” In addition, the presence of a cephalic haematoma, a blood clot between the brain and skull, was overlooked, which, together with the jaundice, revealed a possible increase of bilirubin. And an excess of this substance can lead to brain damage and seizures.
Who’ll be motivated by Brooks’ success?
TWO dodgy men, aged 31 and 67, were arrested by the National Police and charged with forgery, as well as crimes against the rights of foreign citizens. The older man already had a police record, after being charged with similar crimes in the past. Both men took advantage of their employment positions and issued, then sold, pre-work contracts to foreign citizens for around 1,000 euros. Yet the foreigners never did a day’s work. The purpose of the scam was to make it easier for the foreigners to set themselves up on Spanish territory.
Scumbag robs blind man A DASTARDLY, 33-year-old man, who committed a violent robbery on a blind man in Adeje, already has an extensive police record, with more than 40 crimes to his name. He took advantage of the Briton, who uses a walking stick, and snatched a gold chain and crucifix from his neck. The victim thought, initially, that he had been physically attacked, and it was only when speaking to police officers that he realised he had also been robbed. The officers became aware of the situation when they noticed a blind man shouting for help, but they recognised a person in the vicinity, because of his criminal history.
After questioning him and conducting a search, they confirmed that he was the assailant. During their search, officers found a gold chain and a crucifix, hidden in his clothes, but he denied knowing anything about the assault. The officers spoke to the victim about the jewellery, and, to the man’s surprise, he realised that the chain had been taken from around his neck only moments before. The officers detained the thief, who, at the time of the arrest, resisted them initially by throwing himself to the floor. The assailant, and a complete police report, were placed before the judicial authorities.
FOUR-TIME major champion Brooks Koepka’s early journey in the professional game included a 2013 victory in La Gomera… and emerging golfers will strive to be following in his footsteps this summer.
The spectacular venue of Tecina Golf hosts the Fred Olsen Alps de La Gomera from 11th to 13th July, and competitors on the third tier of European golf will be
aiming to climb the ladder towards the European Tour and beyond. Koepka enjoyed success when he won at the same venue in a 2013 Challenge Tour event, and he’s never looked back. His Canarian victory, and subsequent emergence as one of golf’s top stars, will surely be a huge motivation for the entrants, knowing that the top five, on the Alps Tour’s order of merit, gain automatic entry to the following season’s Challenge Tour. The popular American certainly found Tecina to his liking, destroying
the field with a 10-stroke victory, and a 24-under-par winning total. It proved to be the springboard to third place on the order of merit, which then secured his card for the European Tour. Now, 132 players will have their eyes on a similar prize on the Donald-Steeldesigned course, which boasts stunning views across the sea throughout the round. Tecina Golf Director Primos Pusnik, said: “Once more, we have the pleasure of hosting an Alps Tour event, to show all of Europe our little paradise that is Tecina Golf, here in La Gomera.”

Consulate’s helping hand for the island’s older folk THE British Consulate, along with Birmingham University, last week launched coverage in Tenerife of their support website, for older and more vulnerable British residents.
The website, Support in Spain (www.supportinspain.info), contains useful information on how to get extra support and help on a wide range of topics, such as health care, disabled services and benefits, as well as a directory of local support organisations. Helen Keating, British ViceConsul in Santa Cruz, said: “It is exciting to see this website expanding into Tenerife, after a successful start in mainland Spain.” “There is some incredible work, carried out by so many volunteers across the islands, to support foreign residents in need. As the Consulate cannot be in all areas at once, we hope that this website is a useful support
tool for voluntary groups in their work, and for residents as well. “We have compiled the site in Spanish, as well as English, so that social workers, medical staff and Spanishspeaking friends can, for the first time, access information on English-speaking support available.” Helen added: “Our message from the British Consulate to UK residents is clear: ‘Plan ahead for the future. Anyone
can become vulnerable at any time, and it is better to be prepared.’” Two well-attended afternoon events were held recently in Tenerife. In the North, the project was presented in the English Library, Puerto de la Cruz, while Adeje Cultural Centre hosted the South’s meeting the following day. The meetings were led by Neil Hesketh, of the Support in Spain project, and Penny
Huge cigarette smugglers are smoked out by police
THE Guardia Civil found around 4,000 cartons of cigarettes inside the luggage of two passengers, who were travelling on an inter-island commercial boat to Santa Cruz port.
The officers, working in collaboration with the tax agency, identified the people responsible at the customs control point during the normal
procedure, in which vehicles and the passengers must pass through to declare what they have purchased to bring into Tenerife. The Guardia officers’ suspicions were aroused, and a check of the couple’s luggage confirmed their feelings. The total number of cigarette cartons they confiscated was 4,098. The couple, when asked to produce a receipt, were unable to, and the corresponding tax on the cigarettes was an estimated 12,000 euros.
Gómez, Consular Officer for the British Consulate in Tenerife. Attending the events was a wide variety of organisations providing support to British residents in Tenerife. These included: Fighting Against Cancer Tenerife, Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer, AMATE Breast Cancer Support, Lions Club, Callao Salvaje Community Church, El Arca de Noé, The English Library, Friends of Tenerife, All Saints Church, The British Games Club, Tenerife Family Church, SHE women’s support, House of Hope and Living Room. The meetings were also an important opportunity for those present to meet with a Consulate representative, as well as network with other people, working with older and more vulnerable people in Tenerife. The Support in Spain website is the result of a close cooperation between the British Consulates in Southern Spain and the School of Social Policy, at the University of Birmingham.
The original project set out to research the issues facing older and vulnerable British people while living in Spain, and to suggest possible solutions to help prevent them becoming socially isolated in the future. One of the study’s conclusions was the need to develop a website that included all the contact information of the different voluntary groups, and Spanish statutory authorities available locally, as well as helpful advice on common questions, such as how to secure extra social care, help for a disability, or assistance with paperwork in Spanish. The project was funded by the UK’s Economic and Social Research Council and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The content of the website now covers the Costa del Sol, Almeria and the Canaries, where there are high numbers of British residents. It is published in Spanish as well as English and has had over 35,000 visitors since it was launched.

NEWS IN BRIEF To bear the topless, Police save woman’s life
THE National Police were last Monday able to save a Santa Cruz woman, who appeared to be seriously wounded. They were sent to the Barrio de Valleseco area, and, on closer inspection, saw that her injuries related to self-harming wounds. The officers immediately began to perform first-aid on the woman, until further help arrived in the form of ambulances and their medics. Once there, they promptly used a special technique, covering up the cuts which were just above the woman’s wrists. They also stabilised her before transferring her to hospital for further treatment, as well as a mental evaluation. The medical team said the woman’s life had been saved because of the quick-thinking officers.
Flaming motorway car
A CAR went up in flames on the TF-1, inside the Adeje municipality last Sunday, but the reason was not known. The emergency services were dispatched to the area, and fire-fighters began to extinguish the flames immediately. Other services were redirecting road-users, while asking them to drive with caution. But it took 90 minutes before the road was deemed safe.
Sky spies catch drug-driver
or sit and bare them
TOPLESS sunbathing is by no means an uncommon sight these days on Spanish coasts, including those in the Canaries and Balearic Islands.
But when mass tourism really began to take off in Spain in the 1960s, the country was still a dictatorship, with conservative attitudes prevailing. The Catholic Church even warned against the topless fashion, which northern Europeans brought with them on holiday. Today, however, over recent decades, the Spanish have become more used to seeing female foreign tourists ditching their bikini
tops to catch some rays. And surveys suggest that at least one in three Spanish women happily sunbathes semi-nude herself. A reform of the 1989 Penal Code removed the category of ‘toplessness’ as a public scandal, and subsequent rulings have stated that going topless cannot be banned on beaches. Nevertheless, some local authorities have demanded the power to establish areas in which being bikinitopless is a no-no, such as public swimming pools and municipal parks. No law prohibits going topless at residential-complex communal pools, but, under the Horizontal Property Law, the owners’ internal communities can vote to
put a stop to it, and even establish a ban. Regulations are one thing, but then there is what is considered socially acceptable. Is there a difference in people’s minds between topless on the sand and topless by the pool or in the park? Most people these days probably don’t bat an eyelid at the sight of bare boobs on the beach. But the same people may well raise an eyebrow if they find their female neighbours going topless at the community swimming pool. And what if the onlookers find themselves staring at a lady’s nipples while walking the dog on the nearest public patch of green? It barely needs suggesting!
road-safety laws, according to a statement by Fernando Grande-Marlaska, acting Interior Minister. Twelve helicopters, deployed this summer to snare drivers on their mobile phones, are accompanied by 11 drones, 216 high-definition cameras and camouflaged vehicles
from the Traffic Group of the Guardia Civil, all dedicated to nab distracted drivers. The Guardia Civil have deployed 300 more agents this summer, adding to their 9,100 existing traffic officers, to carry out a predicted 900,000 breath tests throughout July and August.
Keep both hands on wheel, or pay price! A SURVEILLANCE helicopter caught a drugged-up man driving at 223km/h on the AP-7 motorway near Gandia, on the Costa Blanca. The Pegasus helicopter, from Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), caught the driver at 1.42pm last Saturday, before notifying the Guardia Civil’s traffic unit. The man was detained and tested positive for having taken “various drugs”. The Spanish Government brought in surveillance helicopters to catch speedsters back in 2007, and no fewer than eight now patrol the skies.
Swimmer, 33, drowns at sea
A SWIMMER, aged 33, drowned last Monday while bathing in the Costa del Sol waters at La Gaviota, in Benalmadena. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, who were accompanied by Local Police officers. Authorities responded to the incident after a call was made to emergency services at 8:20pm, reporting that a person was unable to pull himself out of the water. But they refused to confirm the man’s nationality, or place of residence.
WHATSAPP messaging while behind the wheel will cost drivers six points from their licences, when Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) soon increase penalties against “distractions”. These include WhatsApping, speaking with your phone in one hand and touching your car’s navigator, as well as opening a drink or lighting a cigarette. The new rules will be introduced shortly because distractions have now superseded speeding and drunk-driving as Spain’s leading cause of traffic accidents. The changes will soon become part of the country’s

Help keep daughter alive, begs father
Spain’s wages higher than pre-crisis levels
AVERAGE earnings in Spain stood at €11,412 a year in 2017, which was the first time in nine years that the figure had risen above pre-crisis levels, according to a new study.
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) found average earnings increased by 3.1% from 2016 to 2017. It was the first time earnings were above 2008’s average of €11,318. That year saw the global financial crisis break out, plunging Spain, the rest of Europe and much of the world, into recession. The INE found household incomes averaged at €28,417 in 2017, but that figure was still below 2009’s €30,000-plus average. Around 10.4% of households said they faced financial difficulty towards the end of last year 2018, which was up 1.1%, year-on-year.
A HUNGARIAN father, Bálint Horvarth, is pleading with Canarian Weekly readers to help save his daughter Virag, who has a rare, life-threatening disease called DOCK8. It affects the immune system, rather like sepsis, and, as most surgeons are aware, youngsters suffering with the disease seldom live past the age of 18. And Virag is just a few weeks off that birthday! A year or so ago, in his homeland, he was advised by surgeons to move the family to a sunny climate, such as here in Tenerife. Surgeons here are able to treat his daughter better than they ever could in Hungary, and the warm climate really suits her. They also recommended La Laguna’s University Hospital, whose students would know a lot more about her illness than in her homeland, because they are always seeking new cures. The 41-year-old father took the plunge and transferred wife Eva, along with Virag and younger daughter Malna, 15, to San Isidro, where they now live. “Our own doctors in Hungary admitted that they had come to a ‘dead-end’,” he said. “It is a fact that most DOCK8 sufferers, who reach 18 years of age, will die without specialist treatment, which, in itself, is classed as being dangerous.” He added: “Virag will be 18 on 15th August, and we are extremely anxious because
she has been bearing this horrific illness so bravely, for most of her life. “Our other daughter was born with the same disease, but she was given a bonemarrow transplant, and, thank God, a miracle happened, because she overcame the illness. “However, we have been made aware by experts that this rare disease, which affects less than one in a million people, will almost certainly kill Virag if she does not receive the correct treatment over here. “The ocean air here also helps clear her lungs, which are just 30% active, but Virag has already been brought
back to life twice in recent months, and time is running out. Every day is a nightmare for the family. “We have an apartment in San Isidro, and a car, which is a life-saving essential for getting Virag to and from the University Hospital for treatment, nearly every day.” Balint, who works as a chef, reveals that his wages go on all the bills, the rent, and car repayments. “But I am keen to get a part-time job as well to subsidise my income,” he added. The cost of getting to and from the hospital daily is proving extremely difficult, which is why he has launched
a fund-raising venture. “If you can spare a donation, my family will be eternally grateful to you,” he said. “And, one day, hopefully, our little treasure will be able to lead a much healthier life.” Balint is not looking for a fortune; just €3,950 to ensure that he can keep his car running back and forth to La Laguna, for his daughter’s sake. He cannot use public transport to get there because Virag is paralysed down one side, and has to be carried everywhere. Balcony-jumpers in league of their own!
Travel firm to launch ‘Love Local’ activities NEW resort activities, designed to help holiday-makers provide a positive contribution to destinations, are being introduced by Thomas Cook this summer.
A FACEBOOK page has been set up to mock drunken holiday-makers who have been injured or killed, in balcony falls in Spain.
The controversial “Balconing Mallorca” page has a “league table”, allocating points for injuries and fatalities, with countries ranked by the number of victims. The sick tally has the UK at No.1 with six points, allocated for three injuries (a point each), and one death, and Spain second, with two injuries. ‘Balconing’ sees tourists at Spanish resorts such as Magaluf, attempt to climb
on to balconies and jump from room to room, or into a pool… or not! Oddball members of the balconing Facebook group have even posted messages, encouraging more ‘stupid’ and ‘drunken’ tourists to attempt the life-threatening stunt. “The ‘balconing’ has not only put Magaluf on the world map of risk sports, but is also an effective catalyst of natural selection. “Each year, a handful of drunken tourists choose to eliminate their genes from the evolutionary race, thus allowing the least stupid to occupy their biological niche,” reads a Change.org petition, set up by the group. “The solution to ‘balconing’ is more ‘balconing’.”
The 13 ‘Love Local’ experiences will cost from £12, enabling travellers to meet local communities and help preserve holiday destinations. Those featured include mainland Spain, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Mexico and Cuba. More will be added throughout the season, with the intention of having 70 by next summer. Experiences include living like a local for a day in Cuba, and cycling through
vineyards and olive groves in the Spanish town of Reus. The initiative follows the travel company’s research, which found that two in five Britons were more likely to choose activities which benefited the local community years ago. Half of tourists are more likely to visit a market to mingle with locals, and support independent businesses, than they were a decade ago, and one-third are more inclined to opt for
experiences that feature local traditions. Sandra Killick, Cook UK head of sustainability in destination, said: “Tourism is vital to so many of the countries where we send holiday-makers. “Our new Love Local programme will enable our customers to make a meaningful difference to the people, economy and environment of the destinations they have been holidaying at for many years, and for many more years to come.” Last week, Cook relaunched its iconic Airtours’ brand to sell dynamic packages. The brand, which became synonymous with package holidays in its 1990s heyday, will sell a larger range of short and medium-haul holidays, using three-to-four-star hotels.
airport, an air stewardess said her see-through, no-bra, lowcut blouse was inappropriate for a plane with children on board. The make-up artist said she hadn’t put a bra on because she was wearing nipple covers and tape. She also maintained that she got up and put on a jumper, loaned by the friend with whom she was travelling. But, to her surprise, she was not allowed
to return to her seat. Harriet and the friend were forced to spend the night at Malaga airport and fly the following day. An easyJet statement insisted the woman was “politely requested” to wear an additional top for the flight, but was removed from the plane because “she proceeded to act disruptively towards a member of our crew”.

Biker’s barranco death
A MAN who lost control of his motorbike died, after riding into a San Miguel barranco, parallel to the Hermano Pedro cave, and falling around 10 metres.
The emergency services received a call, just before 12.30pm, requesting help, and an ambulance. The caller stated that a person had ridden into a ravine at the side of the road. An ambulance was dispatched to the area, but, sadly, the medical team were unable to prevent him dying from the injuries he had received.

Marine in death threat, after Embassy robbery
Police outside North Korea’s Madrid embassy after the raid
ARSON was suspected after four individual fires destroyed as many as 8,000 trees in Elche’s WorldHeritage-listed palm groves, in Alicante.
Unesco declared the palm grove of Elche a World Heritage site some time ago, and the Local Police, along with the Fire Department and National Police, have opened an investigation, with
first indications suggesting the fires were intentional. The first fire was spotted just before 1am on Saturday, in a La Hoya palm orchard. Later, at around 2.25am, a second one broke out in an Algoros grove. At the same time, another orchard began to burn, this time on the CV-856 at km1. Finally, at 6am, a fourth fire occurred by the CV-851 at km2. The four fires, all in the Elche municipality, resulted in thousands of burnt palm
trees, which, according to fire brigade sources, added up to a staggering estimate of 8,000. Twentyfive firefighters from Elche, Crevillent, San Vicente and Almorabi stations fought the blazes, alongside six from the forest fire-fighting unit. And, fortunately, the fires were put out later the same day. The ElchePalmeral is the name given to a number of date palm groves, in and around the city, totalling about 200,000 trees.
NORTH Korea has threatened to kill a former US marine, accused of breaking into the secretive country’s Embassy in Madrid.
Iraq veteran Chris Ahn faces extradition to Spain, charged with taking part in last February’s theft, at the DPRK’s Embassy. The 37-year-old spent six years in the US military before joining a shadowy, Korean opposition group called Free Joseon. And his activities have, seemingly, earned him a death sentence from Pyongyang. An American federal judge in Los Angeles has said: “The
FBI has confirmed that the North Korean Government has threatened his life. “He is, apparently, the target of a dictatorship’s efforts to murder him.” On 22nd February, a “military cell” entered the North Korean Embassy, in the northwest of Madrid, attacking staff before escaping in stolen, diplomatic cars. The assailants are also alleged to have handed stolen mobile phones, computers and documents over to the FBI. Korea expert Sung-Yoon Lee told the American Fox News network: “The group face a threat. North Korea has, apparently, dispatched hitsquads against the members who have been outed.”

Family’s dream holiday goes under, in pool refit
A FAMILY of five are fighting for compensation after their £3,000, Costa Adeje dream holiday was ruined by days of pneumatic drilling by the swimming pool. The Andrew family, from Blackpool, Lancs, were hoping for 10 days of relaxation on their first break for two years. Instead, they were confronted with deafening noise and dust at their hotel’s main attraction. But Lindsay, 42, said the ongoing noise rendered the entire trip a nightmare, from their 27th May arrival. The restaurant owner told the Sun Online. “It was totally unacceptable. There was constant hammering, and constant sawing. It was a bit ridiculous because, at breakfast, we couldn’t even hear the other person talking. “And, as well as the noise, there was also lots of dust. It wasn’t nice to sit there.” The family discovered, through negative Trip Advisor reviews just before the trip, that the replacement of swimming-pool tiles could be an issue. But when they contacted booking site Dream Place
Hotels, they were assured the sound would be “minimal”. On arrival, however, they quickly realised that they would have to leave the all-inclusive hotel to get the peace they wanted. The beds by the pool were even “cramped up”, next to each other, to make space for the eight weeks of works. The hotel had failed to inform guests about disruptive building works, so the family were forced to spend extra cash for meals out, and days on the beach, to escape the din. Building work was disguised by posters of the pool, but, unfortunately, it didn’t mask the racket. “We paid thousands of pounds for this holiday, and it was ruined,” said Lindsay. “Noise and dust levels, when the drilling was happening, were so bad that we had to
go to the beach to escape. “When you are all-inclusive, you don’t want to be forced out of your hotel, and have to pay for beds, shades, food and drink.” The family, who had paid for the top rooms, with a balcony and hot tub, asked to switch hotels, because of the monstrous drilling. Lindsay said she spent hours negotiating with the hotel manager, before being told they could be moved to a sister hotel, Gran Tacande. Incredibly, she was then told they would have to pay €2,000 more to move to the half-board accommodation. “It was ridiculous,” she said. “There was no way we were going to pay all that money.” They were then offered another hotel, which Lindsay criticised as being “completely unsuitable”.
Tourism budget push as visitors splash out
A TOTAL of €9.5bn was added to the Spanish tourism sector’s budget, in the first four months of the year, marking a 2.1% funding increase on the first quarter of 2018.
Statistics from the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE) show that 21.4m tourists in Spain spent €15.5bn in the first 2019 quarter, demonstrating a 4.8% increase on the same period in 2018. The revenue is staggered,
because of the sporadic nature of tourism in the country. In January, revenue from tourists actually fell by over 2%. But it regained momentum the following month, when the festival season came back to life, with Valentine’s Day and the Santa Agueda Women’s Festival. An 8% rise in the number of short-term rentals including rural tourism, campsites, hotels and hostels, means that the likelihood of these figures rising more rapidly in the future is high.

5th July 2019 - 11th July 2019 HUNDREDS of firefighters have been battling an outof-control wildfire in Spain, which authorities believe started after a heap of manure self-ignited, amid the European heatwave. The blaze, which broke out last Wednesday afternoon in Torre del Espanol, in the north-eastern region of Catalonia, affected more than 6,500 hectares (16,000 acres), according to the regional government. The flames, raging across a hilly area, some 80km (50 miles) inland from the Mediterranean coastal town of Tarragona, could eventually devour 20,000 hectares in what was presented as an “extreme risk”, said a statement. Regional Interior Minister Miquel Buch said the firefighters had worked through the night as they attempted to bring the flames under control. Chief firefighter Antonio Ramos spelled it out, saying: “You’d have to go back 20 years to see a similar fire of such dimension in the region.” Some 350 firefighters, backed up by around 230 soldiers and 15 aerial-tanker aircraft, were at the scene of the blaze. The fire raged several kilometres from the Asco nuclear plant, but officials said the site was not at risk because the winds were

blowing the flames away from it, and it is located on the other side of a river. Firefighters said the steep terrain was hampering efforts to control the blaze, which spread quickly because of strong winds and soaring temperatures, which neared 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) and were forecast to hit 42 Celsius on the Friday. “It’s complicated. We won’t get it stabilised today,” regional firefighting chief Manuel Pardo told Spanish public television. Catalonia’s forest agent service said the fire probably
began when an “improperlymanaged” pile of manure at a chicken farm selfcombusted in the extreme heat. Around 50 people were evacuated from their homes and five roads were closed. Many evacuees told Spanish media they fled with just the clothes on their backs. “All I took with me were my car keys, my mobile phone, my wallet and my dogs. Nothing else,” one unidentified man told private television Telecinco. Around 30 people, including a handful of British and German residents, had to
spend a second night in a school in the village of Flix. Emergency services ordered the 250-odd Bovera village residents to stay indoors and keep their windows shut, to avoid inhaling smoke. And vulnerable people, such as the elderly, faced similar instructions in nearby Maials, a village of 900 people. The charred land includes vineyards, olive groves and fruit trees. A farm burned down at Torre del Espanol, killing more than 200 sheep, and at least two horses as well as a donkey, according to an AFP photographer at the scene. Catalan Regional President Quim Torra warned: “Friday was the hottest day of the heatwave, and the situation was critical throughout Catalonia.” Torra announced that harvesting crops would be forbidden in Catalonia to avoid sparking fires accidentally, while access to mountains were restricted as a precaution, as long as the high temperatures continued. Drawing by schoolgirl indicts violent mother
A SCHOOLGIRL’S sketch, having depicted a violent torrent of abuse with a belt, has led to the arrest of her mother.
Teachers at a Marbella school recovered the heart-breaking drawing, penned by the 11-year-old pupil. Also, surrounding the cartoon-like character on the page is the word, “volare”, which means “I will fly”. The sketch, scrawled on diary paper, shows a small girl, next to which the words “blood”, “bruise” and “with a leash” are written. After teachers handed the shocking picture over to police, the mother was arrested, as well as another woman, with an eight-year-old daughter. for scorching temperatures early in the European summer, which has sent thermometers up to and beyond 40C in France, Spain and Greece. Meanwhile, Malaga was placed on yellow alert last Monday, as the heatwave continued to scorch Europe, with a record high of 45.9°C registered in Montpellier, France. The colour warning issued by state weather agency AEMET indicated a “risk”, because of temperatures approaching 40°C. Meanwhile, in Andalucia, a teenager was confirmed dead because of the extreme heat, while a Brit hiker was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after collapsing with heatstroke. Spanish mountaineers found him critically ill near Erratzu, in the Western Pyrenees’ Baztan valley. An air ambulance took the Brit to the Navarra Hospital Complex in Pamplona, after his condition took a turn for the worst and he fell unconscious. The incident occurred as soaring temperatures across Europe saw the deaths of four people across Spain and France. Throughout Spain, wildfires were reported in Tarragona, Toledo, Madrid, Catalunya, the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca.
The Brexit Race Where does it leave you as a resident? With a No-Deal Brexit currently back in the running, it’s no wonder that expats in the Canary Islands are feeling a bit lost. At Blacktower Financial Management in Tenerife, we are here to help you understand what Brexit might mean for you.
the Government of Spain has pledged contingency measures to safeguard the rights of British citizens residing in Spain.
Call us today or visit our offices in Valle De San Lorenzo, and we will be happy to review your finances and discuss how you can be best prepared for Brexit.
SET! Check your “certificado de registro” - either the credit card-sized version or green A4 document. An NIE on white paper is not the right document and you will need to apply for the green certificate before UK leaves the EU.
READY! Spain and the UK have drawn up a Withdrawal Agreement which seeks reciprocal assurances for the rights of British citizens in Spain and Spanish expats in the UK. And, even if there is no overarching Brexit agreement,
You should also ensure that you have the correct registration for healthcare in Spain as a No-Deal Brexit could mean that your entitlement changes. However, under the Spanish Royal Decree, there will be a
safety net in place until the end of 2020 for anyone who is correctly registered when the UK leaves the EU. So, it is important to check you have the right documents in place. GO! As a resident, Brexit could change arrangements for travel, work, savings, pensions and investments, and while there’s lots of information out there, trying to decide what applies to you can be quite tricky. As you are probably aware, the race is on to get your circumstances in order. So, why not talk to the team at Blacktower and let us help you get across the Brexit finish line.

IN the latest attempt to cope with the spiralling crisis of plastic waste, which is blighting the world’s oceans, a giant floating machine, built to capture plastic waste, is being deployed for a second time. It is fitted with devices such as solar-powered lights, sensors, cameras, and satellite antennae, and its operators hope to put a dent in the swelling Great Pacific Garbage Patch, floating between California and Hawaii. According to Boyan Slat, creator of The Ocean Cleanup Project, the 2,000ftlong floating boom will be redeployed in the area of the

Taxpayers who owe in excess of €14.1bn A TOTAL of 4,028 Spanish taxpayers owe more than €14.1bn, according to the Tax Agency, which found there were 6.7% fewer debtors than last year. Tax Agency figures showed the total sum owed to the Treasury was 7.8% under last year’s figure. They were revealed as the agency published its list of debtors, who owe more than €1m, following the last financial year’s tax returns. Companies linked to the construction and property sectors were among the individuals, entities and firms with the highest outstanding debts. Many of those companies were left with hefty tax bills after earnings were hit, following the propertymarket crash, in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Reyel Urbis owed the Treasury €353.2m after paying off around €8m over the previous year. Martinsa-Fadesa, which folded, sparked the biggest bankruptcy case
in Spain at the time, and the company still owes €50m. Figures on the list included Rodrigo Rato, former Deputy Prime Minister to Jose Maria Aznar. Rato, who owes more than €1m to the Treasury, is currently in prison for his part in the “Black” corruption scandal. Nueva Rumasa, one of the firms owned by the Ruiz Mateos family of tycoons, owes €8.9m in tax, while former Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz’s arrears add up to around €1.35m. Two subsidiaries of the Andalucia-based Abengoa Group, Abengoa Abenewco and Abengoa Energia, owe more than €2m and €1.1m respectively. But footballer Daniel Alves, who skippers the Brazilian international team, and plays for Paris St Germain, as well as artist Miguel Bose, were among those who cleared their debts this year.

The machine was shipped out to the patch last September to capture some of the floating trash. Unfortunately, rough weather conditions meant that the boom was unable to retain the plastic caught during its four months at sea, and, ultimately broke apart, according to Associated Press. The plastic pollution has now reached such enormous proportions that an estimated 100m tons of it can now be found in the world’s oceans, according to the UN. Between 80-90% of it comes from land-based sources. And, according to a report prepared for the 2016 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, it is estimated that, by 2050, plastic waste in
the ocean will outweigh all fish. The machine has a plastic barrier, with a tapered, 10-foot-deep screen, which simulates a coastline to trap some of the 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic debris, estimated to be swirling around. The high-tech system is fitted with a variety of devices, such as solar-powered lights, sensors, cameras, and satellite antennae, which The Ocean Clean-up Project to keep tabs on it via GPS. It will also be using a dedicated support vessel to collect the trapped plastic every few months, before bringing it back to dry land. Ocean life is able to swim safely around the gigantic boom, and, according to the marine biologists who
accompanied its first run from the support vessel, no adverse environmental impact has resulted from the system’s deployment. Slat hopes that if the system proves useful, 60 such devices will one day be deployed to skim garbage from the ocean’s surface. In recent years, experts and conservationists have sounded the alarm over the plastics and microplastics, which are inundating the world’s oceans and water supplies, leaching carcinogenic toxins and chemicals into the marine environment. In the meantime, plastic drink containers and trash used by fishermen are trapping, confining, and, ultimately, killing marine wildlife such as birds and fish.

Mass evacuation as a hotel blaze takes hold
15 CW
Ryanair bans Duty Free booze on Spanish flights RYANAIR, extending a clampdown on drunken behaviour on its flights to Spain, has now banned passengers from taking Duty-Free booze to their seats.
AROUND 600 people were evacuated from a Mallorcan hotel on Tuesday, after a fire broke out in one of the rooms.
Six were taken to hospital and further 30 treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. Firefighters from Mallorca, Llucmajor, Calvia and Inca joined colleagues from Palma, as well as Local Police and medics, at 5am. They were called to the three-
star Whala Beach Hotel, where customers and hotel workers were evacuated as firefighters tackled the blaze. By around 8.30am, the fire had been extinguished and some customers were allowed back to their rooms. The six people taken to hospital, including one firefighter suffering from heat exhaustion, were said to have slight injuries. The 30 suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation were treated at the scene.
Customers on some flights to Tenerife South, Alicante, Palma, Malaga, Barcelona, and Ibiza, have been receiving emails, setting out new rules for carrying alcohol. The email states that any Duty-Free alcohol, bought at the airport, will have to be put in their “hold luggage before boarding their flight. This will be done at the gate and will be free of charge for those with priority boarding, or carrying one small piece of hand-luggage. Others will have to pay a fee, and if the drink is in a bag, not appropriate for the hold, it will have to be binned. The ban, which was first introduced in 2017, on flights to Ibiza and Alicante, has since been extended. The email adds: “In order to prioritise the comfort and safety of all passengers,
Ryanair will implement the following restrictions on your upcoming flight to Spain: *Customers will not be allowed to carry alcohol on board, and all cabin baggage will be searched at the boarding gates *Any alcohol purchased in airport shops, or elsewhere, must be packed carefully, in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold free of charge, if you have purchased priority boarding, or have a small piece of hand luggage.
Customers with larger cabin bags, who have not purchased priority boarding, will be required to pay the appropriate fee. If the bag is unsuitable for placing in the hold (e.g, a plastic bag, then customers will be required to dispose of the alcohol in the bins provided *Boarding gates will be carefully monitored, and customers showing any signs of anti-social behaviour, or attempting to conceal alcohol, will be denied travel, without refund or compensation.

EUROPOL has launched a new taskforce, aimed at tackling criminal peoplesmuggling and humantrafficking rings.
It will allow liaison officers from all EU Member States to step up the fight against constantly-adapting criminal networks. Spain has long been in the frontline when it comes to the fight against migrantsmuggling groups. The Guardia Civil and National Police have also had significant success in tackling the “white-slave” trade, which forces women into prostitution after smuggling them into the country. The purpose of the Europol taskforce is to share intelligence between EU countries, to identify networks, prioritise and prepare, as well as executing cross-border operations. The venture, called the Joint Liaison Task Force Migrant Smuggling and Trafficking in Human Beings (JLT-MS), will increase the support mechanism already available to member states, including analytical capabilities and tools. The taskforce will provide a joint platform, for direct contact and better coordination and co-operation between law enforcement authorities. The JLT-MS

platform will also improve the joint development of stronger, operational strategies, which will help disrupt international criminal networks even more
efficiently, targeting highvalue targets. It will also target the proceeds of crime, and increase the effectiveness of parallel, financial investigations, in
particular, money-laundering and asset-recovery. Wil van Gemert, Europol’s Deputy Executive Director and Head of Operations, said: “Offering a ‘service’
in high demand, criminal networks of migrantsmugglers are not shy about using violence, and violating the basic human rights of their ‘clients’. “Our experts helped member states’ law-enforcement agencies in tackling criminal networks during 39 Action Days on the ground, leading to more than 600 arrested suspects of migrant-smuggling in 2018. “The criminal networks are constantly reshaping their business models to avoid law enforcement radars. “This is why, through this new JLT-MS, EU Member States, with the support of Europol, will target even more effectively this major threat for human lives, posed by criminal networks involved in migrant smuggling and trafficking of humanbeings.”
Heatwave kills 17-year-old
A TEENAGER died of heat exhaustion as Spain, and much of Europe, baked in an extreme heatwave, the like of which has seldom been seen, if at all.
The 17-year-old youth was rushed to Cordoba’s Reina Sofía hospital, in the Andalusian city, last Thursday. He had been working in the fields when he started to feel dizzy. He jumped into the pool at the farm, where he was working, to cool down, then went into convulsions. The teenager, who was from the
Castro del Rio village, died the same night. But he was not the heat’s only victim, because a 93-year-old man died the same afternoon in Santiago de Valladolid, also from heat-stroke. He collapsed while walking to the dentist, sources reporting that he might have been wearing too many clothes in the 37-degree Celsius heat. In Mallorca, police are investigating whether the death of a 60-year-old man was also down to the heatwave, while in Murcia, a man aged 50 was hospitalised because of the heat.

Brave Ginger beats frostbite, to display new titanium paws!
HARSH winters in Russia’s Siberia region often claim the lives of house pets, who can fall prey to frostbite and the surgical amputation of their limbs.
And, with little ability to survive, this frequently leads to the poor creatures being euthanised. But a cat named Ryzhik, which means Redhead or Ginger, has been given a new lease of life, following an unprecedented set of operations, supplying the quadruple-amputee four prosthetic paws, constructed of titanium. The surgery was carried out by a Novosibirsk clinic, which specialises in implanting artificial limbs, according to the Siberian Times newspaper. The poor cat had suffered
from gangrene and frostbite on his ears and four paws, said veterinary surgeon Sergei Gorshkov, which led to the amputation of Ryzhik’s paws. The clinic then used computer tomography and 3D-modelling technology, to construct the perfect set of artificial paws for the cat, which would not only serve the basic function of prosthetic limbs but would also be sufficiently comfortable, ensuring that he wouldn’t try to prise them off. Ryzhik is now the only cat in Russia, and, probably, the world, wholly reliant on four prosthetics. Gorshkov said: “He is definitely the first cat in the world to experience such surgery. The limbs have fully connected with the skin and bone. The part of the limb that goes inside the body is spongy, and the bone tissue
is growing inside it.” He added: “We achieved a good result. We secured the function of the limb, although part of it has been removed.” While video footage of the cat shows that Ryzhik still has to get over some initial awkwardness, before regaining a wholly natural gait, Gorshkov’s team are confident that it’s only a matter of time before he finds it easy to walk on his new set of paws. In fact, Ginger is already using them to play with, and defend himself from other cats. Gorshkov’s clinic has been working to patent new techniques, which would allow various animals to enjoy a new life after the traumatic loss of their limbs. Such new forms of prosthesis include rebuilt beaks for parrots and hoods for cattle, as well as artificial limbs for birds.

Don’t blame me for taxi theft, says Till
DARREN Till, Britain’s leading Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) star, has rubbished reports that he stole a taxi during a Tenerife holiday.
He was in the headlines over here in the Spring when it emerged that he had been arrested on the island for, allegedly, trashing a hotel and stealing a taxi. Till, who last fought in March, admitted there had been an incident, but insisted he had nothing to do with it. “Truthfully and honestly, we went on a lad’s birthday, and we booked it for the while,” Till told Fighters Only magazine. “We were gone for two days and we were out there having a good time. It’s a nice place. Then we were in the hotel, and there were these other guys in the room. We weren’t having trouble, but a little bother broke out… but not fights and whatnot. “Obviously, the hotel didn’t get trashed. There was no
criminal damage, but things got thrown, and whatever.” But Till did spend time in a Tenerife police cell. “I won’t name names, but a taxi was not stolen… well, it was stolen and driven around the block a few times,” he added. “I went to the scene, but I’d previously been somewhere else. I had left the hotel, as well. “Then, when the police were rounding everyone up, they saw me. Straight away, one of them said ‘Darren Till?’ I knew what was going on, and I knew it was all going to fall on me.” The fighter confirmed that he was picked up by the police and paid a “scandalous” fine after a stint in a station cell. The 26-year-old has courted controversy during his rapid rise to the top of the British Mixed Martial Arts scene. He suffered his second successive defeat in a row in March at UFC London. But he remains the UFC’s biggest British star, and intends to fight again before the end of the year.
Mosquitoes plaguing an entire community TIGER mosquitoes have now colonised two-thirds of the Valencian Community, and experts blame climate change and transportation for the spread. Between March 2018 and May 2019, the south-east Asian insects expanded to 30 more municipalities, claiming 335 of Valencia’s total of 542. The tiger mosquito needs temperatures above 14 degrees to survive, and establishes itself between June and October in Spain. “We are still in a period of
expansion, and we expect a presence in regions of Alicante, close to the coast,” said Ricardo Jimenez, professor of plague control at the University of Valencia. Jimenez said it was down to climate change, as well as travel and transportation. The AP-7 motorway, in particular, has been named as a vector in the mosquito’s spread. Experts said larvae could have been transported in “damp spare tyres or plant pots”, all across the Valencian Community. This mosquito is responsible for the transmission of viral diseases dengue,
chikungunya and zika. Just last month, three Icelandic tourists were believed to have contracted chikungunya while in
Alicante. But, thankfully, the diagnosis was false. In the last year, however, the Valencian Community has seen one case of zika
and 12 cases of dengue. These viruses spread after a tiger mosquito bites a person already infected, and who has usually travelled from a tropical region, where the disease is more widespread. The Valencian Ministry of Health has now allocated €400,000 for municipalities to help stop the mosquito’s spread. Control measures include fumigation, particularly in damp areas like drains and sewers. Jimenez added that in northern Italy, the release of 100,000, sterilised male mosquitoes per week had reduced the population by 70% in a former study.

As the Conservative leadership contest narrowed down to the final two candidates, the mood towards the pound deteriorated, with the odds of a nodeal Brexit appearing to increase.

Pound hits six-month low against euro and US dollar
are taking an increasinglycautious view of the UK outlook. June’s UK manufacturing PMI put additional pressure on the pound, this week, as the index disappointed forecasts to fall from 49.4 to 48. This weaker showing highlights the negative impact Brexitbased uncertainty is having on the UK economy, raising concerns over the health of the second-quarter, grossdomestic product. Demand for the US dollar generally weakened in the wake of the Fed’s June policy meeting, which saw a marked shift in tone on the subject of interest rates. Hopes of a breakthrough in trade relations with China helped to rally USD exchange rates in the wake of the G20 summit, however, as the two sides agreed to restart formal talks. Although inflation within Germany and the Eurozone, as a whole, showed signs of picking up, this was not enough to boost the euro against its rivals. As the latest set of Eurozone manufacturing PMIs remained in contraction territory, worries over the underlying strength of the economy helped to keep the single currency on a weaker footing.
The appeal of the pound could diminish further if June’s UK services PMI also proves disappointing in nature. As the service sector still accounts for more than three quarters of the country’s economic activity, any contraction here could weigh heavily on GBP exchange rates. If the UK appears on track for a stagnant, second-quarter, gross-domestic product, the pound may struggle to find support against the euro or US dollar. Mounting anticipation, ahead of the election of the new Conservative leader, could also put GBP exchange rates under pressure.
Meanwhile, any signs of improvement in the latest, US, non-farm payrolls report may encourage the US dollar to recover further ground. While even an upside surprise in employment is unlikely to alter the odds of a Fed interest-rate cut, this could still offer USD exchange rates a temporary boost. Deterioration in May’s German trade data could see the euro fall further out of favour, on the other hand, as global tensions continue to weigh on trade. Another weak month of exports would raise the risk of the Eurozone’s powerhouse economy, seeing a greater
loss of momentum in the second quarter, exposing the euro to fresh selling pressure. the economic-administrative court deems appropriate. Legal costs in a tax proceeding? The costs of the procedure are neither taxes, sanctioning measures, nor patrimonial benefits, says the Supreme Court. It adds that when quantifying the amount in a general and abstract way, the legal costs
lose their true nature. That’s because they can no longer be considered costs of the procedure, but identified as a rate, or a sanctioning measure. Supreme Court warns of uncertainty What draws our attention is that the Supreme Court warns about a “deep, legal uncertainty” in tax matters. The Highest Court says: “Immediate certainty” in the development of the norms “is a legal requirement, directly connected with the principle of legal security, and whose breach must result in the legal consequences, which the order reserves for constitutional violations.” Mariano E. Lawsuits against Inland Revenue won’t carry a fee
According to the Royal Decree article, when a citizen sues the Inland Revenue Office, within an EconomicAdministrative proceeding, and his reasons are not accepted, he must pay the legal costs, to be calculated at 2% of the sum claimed, with a minimum of €150-500 euros, depending on the cases. This is, of course, a hidden, dissuasive measure because the taxpayer would think more than twice before starting a proceeding that could end up with a dismissive resolution, and legal costs to be charged apart. Needless to say, if the Tax Office is defeated, no costs are to be paid, always in relation to the EconomicAdministrative proceeding. The Supreme Court does not dispute the inadmissibility of the costs themselves, which, anyway, could be the subject of constitutionality. However, it concludes that the model of legal costs of the said
Royal Decree is null because it supposes a generic system, “disconnected from the procedure”, which, instead of a procedural cost, becomes “rate” or “sanction”. The General Tax Law establishes that the economic-administrative procedure will be free, but it may be regulated if there are costs for the cases, which

Because, if you’re prepared to spend a long time trawling the oddest corners of the classifieds, you’ll discover cars out there that are very rare, and very cheap. Cars, in some cases, with just a couple of examples left on the road. The most endangered of endangered species. But should you buy one? To find out, Freddie and Paddy each purchased a superrare car for just a few thousand pounds. Paddy got himself a Matra Bagheera, France’s forgotten Seventies sports car, while Freddie went truly exotic with… an Austin Allegro estate. According to the producers, there was only one place to test such rare beasts. Borneo, the vast rainforest island that’s home to many rare beasts of its own. And, on account of being somewhat jungly, a challenging environment for a pair of knackered old cars. But an even more challenging environment for Paddy, a man who, by his own admission, isn’t a confident traveller. And also isn’t a fan of eating still-squirming sago worms.
War In The Blood
Sunday 7th July, BBC2, 21.00
An intimate feature-length documentary following two patients through ground breaking ‘first in-human’ trials at University Hospital for a treatment described as the beginning of the end of cancer. Not allowed to meet, and separated by two floors of a hospital, 53 year-old Graham and 18 year-old Mahmoud are nevertheless bound together by their commitment to the treatment and their faith in the science. Terminally ill, the trial represents their only option: how do their ages and life experiences affect their physical and emotional responses? For Martin Pule, the scientist who has developed the treatment, the responsibility of curing patients is both exciting and daunting. He knows he stands on the cusp of a breakthrough that could radically change the way we treat cancer. At the heart of War In The Blood is the complex relationship between the patients and the clinical team. How much hope can the doctors give their patients when they are effectively going into these trials as human guinea pigs? They must all weigh up hope with realism and their response is a profound and revealing reflection of the human condition.

Tipping Point: Lucky Stars Sunday 7th July, ITV1, 20.00
Ben Shephard is back with a brand new series of Tipping Point: Lucky Stars, the quiz show in which three celebrities take on an extraordinary machine in the hope of winning £20,000 for charity. This week QI and Jonathan Creek star Alan Davies, comedy actress Sally Phillips and TV doctor Ranj Singh will each need quick wits and nerves of steel if they’re to capture the prize.
Mad Cow Disease: The Great British Beef Scandal Wednesday 10th July, BBC2, 21.00
Long Lost Family
Monday 8th July, ITV1, 21.00
In the last year over 4000 people from across the UK have contacted the Long Lost Family team asking for help to find missing family members. In this brand new seven-part series, Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell return and, with the help of trained intermediaries, DNA experts and investigators from all over the world, they find people that previously couldn’t be traced and answer questions that have haunted entire lives. The series will feature more extraordinary stories with unexpected twists and turns, including Long Lost Family’s oldest ever searcher at the age of 83, who is desperate to find her daughter before it’s too late. New searches will take the team to locations including Chicago, Brisbane, Belfast and Canada. And for the first time the series will feature a missing person story without a resolution, by making an emotional appeal. Episode four is an hour-long special following one woman’s search for her mother and, through the use of DNA testing, reveals layers of her family she never knew existed. Kathleen Fraser Jackson was adopted as a baby and grew up in London. At the age of three her adoptive mother died. Kathleen was then raised by her adoptive father and stepmother, until she was sent to boarding school aged five. After her mother passed away, Kathleen felt lost. She tells the programme: “If you haven’t got a mother, you don’t get loved. I realised that that’s how I felt my whole life.”
Mad Cow Disease: The Great British Beef Scandal tells the story of Britain’s biggest ever food scandal. Since 1996 almost 200 people have died from vCJD, whilst the cattle disease BSE has been responsible for the death of over four million cows. Despite more than 20 years of scientific research, scientists are no closer to discovering a cure for it, or even a test to see who is carrying it. And what still alarms researchers is that they don’t know how many people are still carrying the infection nor how many more will die from the disease. BSE virtually destroyed the British beef industry in the 1990s and vCJD continues to cost the NHS millions of pounds every year. Beneath the statistics is a story of greed, corruption and catastrophic political misjudgment by the then Conservative government. With access to the politicians, scientists and families who have been defined by this epidemic, this film pieces together a forgotten chapter of our recent history.
Too Gay For God?
Thursday 11th July, BBC1, 22.35
Too Gay For God? explores the place of the LGBTIQ+ community within the Christian faith, and the Church of England in particular, through the perspective of Reverend Jide Macaulay, an openly gay member of the clergy. Too Gay For God? explores the place of the LGBTIQ+ community within the Christian faith, and the Church of England in particular, through the perspective of Reverend Jide Macaulay, an openly gay member of the clergy. An ordained Deacon in the Church of England, Jide wants the Church to adopt a more inclusive position towards the LGBTIQ+ community, with particular respect to the acceptance of same-sex marriages for members of the priesthood. Personally, Jide is ready to commit to his partner and is searching for an answer as to why he can’t marry and be a priest: why does it seem to be the case that this is a privilege enjoyed by straight members of the clergy alone, rather than a right for all? In this film he is setting out to meet people who have views on and personal experience of same-sex relationships within the Church of England, and will seek to understand the position of other Christian denominations. We also see Jide meet with Ian Paul, a scholar of scripture, to ask what the doctrinal issues on sexuality are; and Andrew Foreshew-Cain, the first gay Church of England vicar to marry his partner. Jide’s position reflects that of countless individuals who are struggling to reconcile their sexuality, identity and faith. This film represents a vital opportunity to explore where those people - and the Church - go from here, through the perspective and experiences of someone who is both deeply committed to his faith and striving to be fully accepted by it.

Still Game BBC1, 21.00
In the first of this two-part Still Game special, Winston receives wounding news about his leg, Isa struggles with the creepiness of a new cleaning job, and Tam’s tightfistedness plummets to new
depths. Isa’s spooked when Sheathing the undertaker offers her a cleaning job at his funeral home. Unnerved at the thought of dusting close to death, Isa reluctantly makes a deal with Sheathing - but her blood runs cold. At the Doctor’s surgery, Winston’s all set for some good banter with his GP. But laughs aren’t prescribed when the doctor delivers a devastating diagnosis about Winston’s remaining leg. Meanwhile at The Clansman, Tam tries to con Boabby, but his miserly ways push the barman too far and he finds himself barred from the pub. Desperate to find a new watering hole, Tam tries to turn Navid’s shop into his new local, but is given short shrift and sent packing from there too. As Winston tries to come to terms with the news about his leg, Jack and Victor vow to support their pal in his hour of need. Feeling awkward, Tam avoids talking to Winston until Isa gives him a hard time. She persuades him to see his best pal and urges him to just be himself. However, Tam’s empathy proves abysmal and he spectacularly falls out with Winston, leaving their future friendship in jeopardy. Winston is played by Paul Riley, Isa by Jane McCarry, Tam by Mark Cox, Sheathing by Bruce Morton, Doctor by James MacPherson, Boabby by Gavin Mitchell, Navid by Sanjeev Kohli, Jack by Ford Kiernan and Victor by Greg Hemphill. Also starring Shamshad Akhtar as Meena, Lynne McPherson as Peggy, Paul Young as Shug, Kate Donnelly as Frances and Michael Mackenzie as a patient.

Chandrika visits John’s room late at night fuelling suspicions about their relationship. The clandestine meeting is witnessed by Violet who tells a shocked Henrietta. They use this information to pursue their plan to drive John and Margaret apart. When the Emperor presents John with his license, the event is soured for John by Margaret’s early exit. At Beecham House Chanchal is ostracised by the staff as news of her affair with Daniel spreads. Prince Akbar and the Empress make plans to secure the future of their kingdom and the Prince makes John an offer he can’t refuse. Samuel presents Castillon with another opportunity to sabotage John’s plans. Margaret demands answers from John who realises that the only way he can win her trust is to reveal the secret he promised never to tell. At night time, surrounded by candle light, with his family, Chandrika and Margaret present, he reveals in a series of dramatic flashbacks the identity of August’s mother and his relationship with her. He knows that doing this jeopardizes the safety of his child and his future with Margaret.

Judi Dench’s Wild Borneo Adventure c h o i c e ITV1, 21.00
Judi journeys down Borneo’s Kinabatangan river, over 560km long, and along the island’s coastline to explore the unique wildlife that lives in this threatened environment. With intrepid scientist, Kerisha Kntayya, Judi joins a crocodile hunt with a difference. Kerisha plucks young crocodiles out of the water. Judi then joins Kerisha’s team as they wrestle an adult croc as part of the study Kerisha hopes will help save these prehistoric monsters. Judi says: “It’s skin was so soft…yet another experience in this, which I shall never forget.” Judi who’s had a fascination with bats from an early age, explores the Gomantong cave; home to more than a million bats. Each evening at exactly the same time the bats put on one of nature’s greatest spectacles. At a remote Research Centre she explores how scientists are helping animals in an environment that has been logged for timber and devastated by our insatiable appetite for palm oil. She learns how the balance of nature has been disrupted as she turns wildlife detective to help solve a jungle nature crime. Hornbills, whose nests sites high in the canopy have been cut down, are now becoming easy prey to predators. She meets a python she names James Bond. She then has a joyous encounter with a group of orphaned elephants victims of loss of habitat, but then learns how local people are replanting trees to join up fragmented forests and animal populations. In a moving moment she even gets to plant her own tree – one that is a favourite of the orangutans. She promises to come back and climb it in 20 years. Judi’s adventure continues along the coast where she helps save its coral reefs – the forests of the sea. And she meets her favourite animal of all time. Judi has adopted three baby orangutans but has never met them. Now she gets to meet an orphan baby and help it on its journey to freedom. After holding hands with the orangutan and watching her go off to play, Judi says: “Such a great sight. They are being looked after so brilliantly. And when they are released they will have all the skills they need to survive. I never thought I would get so close to an orangutan. This is a never to be forgotten moment.”

This new documentary for ITV investigates why so many people in Britain are struggling to get a good night’s sleep. It is estimated about a third of adults in the UK aren’t getting enough sleep, and that’s having a dramatic impact on the nation’s health - with some experts describing it as a public health crisis. This programme explores the reasons behind this trend, and also looks at how devastating a lack of sleep can be for our bodies. Problem sleepers also visit one of the world’s leading sleep research centres to find out if their issues can finally be cured.

New health advice is issued to EU tourists
THE European Union’s Health Agency has issued new advice to European holidaymakers, after three Icelandic tourists contracted the chikungunya virus, while staying on the Costa Blanca.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said investigations were ongoing, to assess the risk of the virus spreading. ECDC said the virus is usually non-fatal, but it added it could leave patients with chronic conditions and complications including arthritis. The advice comes after a 37-year-old Icelandic woman was diagnosed with the virus after returning from a holiday in Alicante Province. Two other travellers, one aged five, were also diagnosed with what became the first recorded cases of the virus being contracted in Spain. Chikungunya is a tropical disease which originated in Africa and is spread by mosquitoes. Its symptoms include joint pains, rashes, fevers and headaches. The virus kills about one in every 1,000 people who become infected with it.
Heat kills Brit swimmer
A BRITISH woman died while cooling off from the suffocating heat in an Orihuela swimming pool, according to Spanish press.
The 36-year-old reportedly suffered convulsions after taking a dip in a complex pool in the Entrenaranjos area of Alicante, at midday last Friday. An emergency medical team fought to save her life by practising CPR for some 45 minutes. But, tragically, there was no response, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Spanish media also reported that the woman, possibly, had a history of epilepsy.

Germany’s darknet drugs portal busted, and leader detained
GERMANY’S biggest internet platform for selling illegal narcotics, its darknet drugs portal, has been closed down, along with its Mallorcabased leader, who is now in custody.
In all, 11 people have been detained for suspected involvement in drugtrafficking via the Chemical Revolution website. German police said the main suspect was a 26-yearold man, who headed the operation and whose last address was in Mallorca. The arrest of another 26-yearold German citizen, last spring, for trafficking drugs, led to the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office opening an investigation. Police seized large quantities of narcotics, including nearly 50kg of amphetamines, 16kg of marihuana, 2kg of MDMA, 900gms of cocaine, 600gms of heroin, together with a high volume of ecstasy tablets, and LSD, in the states
of Hesse and Lower Saxony. The original suspect said he had stored drugs for a group of people, operating as Chemical Revolution, and prepared them for shipment to customers. As part of the investigation, 10 other members of the group were identified and arrested, including the main suspect. The catalogue of the
platform included all types of narcotics, especially synthetic drugs such as ecstasy, MDMA and amphetamines, as well as heroin, cocaine and marihuana, distributed anywhere in the world. And payment was made with bitcoin. The suspects sold not only through their own portal, but also through the Wall Street Market platform,
which, until recently, was the second-largest platform for illegal sales, globally, on the darknet, which was dismantled recently by the German police. The main defendant was responsible for selling drugs over the Internet, coordinating the supply and managing the money. Last February, also in Germany, one 43-year-old Dutchman, five Germans, aged 24-35, and a 44-yearold Pole, were arrested. A 32-year-old Polish citizen was arrested in March in Poland and extradited to Germany for criminal prosecution, while another German suspect was arrested in April. In the investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects, and the dismantling of the platform, the Central Office for Combating Internet Crime (ZIT) of the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office, and the BKA, were also involved, as well as police authorities from the Länder and from Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and France.
LGTB Pride Day attracts ‘Family’ followers galore
TENS of thousands of people filled the streets of central Barcelona last Saturday, celebrating LGTB Pride Day under the “WeAreFamily” slogan. Organisers Pride Barcelona said that around 100,000 people turned out to watch and support the spectacular, grand parade, despite exceptionally-high temperatures. This year also marked the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, recognised as the start of the LGTB rights movement. LGTB family associations headed the 34-strong procession of elaborate floats, with banners declaring: “We are families
everywhere.” Representatives of NGOs, trade unions and political parties were also there to show their support for the LGTB community, including
Barcelona Mayor Ada Cola. The only controversy surrounding the day came with the organisers’ ban on the centre-right political party Ciudadanos taking
part, on the grounds that it had failed to stand by its commitment, not to make pacts with the far-right Vox party. Pride Barcelona had stated that all parties which wanted to participate had to promise “not to make a pact with, or support political formations which promote hate speech, are anti-feminist, racist, xenophobic or threaten the rights of LGTB people.” When an open-top bus with the party’s logo went past the crowd, gathered in the plaza Universidad for a demonstration to demand equal rights for the LGTB community, some people blocked its way and used spray cans to daub the side with insults and messages like “Fascists”, “Get out” and “LGTB struggle”.

writes end to St George statue no Desk Civil War history! longer in the pink!
Azaña (inset) governed the Republic during the Spanish Civil War
A 16th-CENTURY sculpture of Saint George has just about been restored to its original state, after receiving an infamously-botched make-over. The wooden statue of St George, astride a horse, in San Miguel Church in Estella, Navarra, had turned dark brown with age. But its restoration, by a local crafts business, left the soldier
with a pink face… and a look which social-media users,
mercilessly, compared with Toy Story’s Woody, or Tintin. Authorities fined the church and the crafts business €6,010 each. Now, though, after three months of work in an official Pamplona laboratory, St George is back to normal, at a cost of €30,000, paid by the parish. However, there has been partly-irreversible damage, with some of the sculpture’s colours lost forever, admitted Fernando Carrera, spokesman for Spain’s art conservation-restoration association.
A DESK used by the last Spanish Republic President, to sign his resignation letter, following his defeat in the Civil War, was returned to Spain yesterday (Thursday). France presented Irene Lozano, Spain’s then Secretary of State for Global Spain, with Manuel Azaña’s desk when she visited Collonges-sous-Saleve. The Government’s Global Spain department said:
“Spain’s democratic memory is an element of its reputation abroad.” Azaña spent the first months of his exile in the French town, following the 1939 defeat of the Second Republican Government by former dictator Francisco Franco. He was previously Spain’s Prime Minister, from 1931 to 1933, and took office as President shortly after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, in May 1936. He died in Montauban, France, on 3rd November 1940.
Rapist Worboys learns Spanish, but to no avail
Funeral-car driver, who played hot music all way
JOHN Worboys, the taxi-driver rapist now known as John Derek Radford, had been learning Spanish as part of his plan for a new life on the country’s costas. A COURT in Extremadura has ruled that a funeral director was right to dismiss a driver, who played dance music and smoked, while driving the daughter of a deceased to a service. The First Social Court of Caceres ruled that the driver had been “inconsiderate”,
and had “humiliated” the woman when he played flamenco and rumba music on the way to the funeral. Judges also ruled that the driver would have been aware that he was tarnishing the funeral director’s reputation, further justifying his dismissal.
The court heard the driver had listened to music and smoked all the way to the service, in the village of Valencia de Alcantara, around Christmas. The deceased’s family filed a complaint against the company, three months later.
The 62-year-old had hoped to be released, eventually, to start a new life in Spain. Now, though, it appears that the serial rapist will spend the rest of his life behind bars at Wakefield jail, after a huge, public uproar at his pending release. A source at the prison told the Daily Star newspaper: “He had all the books and DVDs and was becoming pretty
fluent. “He wanted to live in Spain where, worryingly, he’d be totally anonymous, and God only knows what he’d have got up to, mixing with tourists. “He also changed his name, so he could slip under the radar, but it has all been for nothing. You don’t need much Spanish in Wakefield nick!” Worboys could possibly have obtained permission from probation officers to travel abroad, after a parole board deemed him no longer dangerous. But the decision is expected to be reversed when he appears before a judge in September for sentencing, after admitting to sex attacks on four more women.

Woman detained then released, after dog dies
Woman crushed to death in front of her boyfriend The emergency services arrived after her boyfriend’s call for help Below: The deadly cliff edge, taped off at the scene of the accident
A WOMAN, aged 27, was arrested in Spain after her dog died from strangulation and heatstroke, amid the European heatwave. The 27-year-old was held on alleged charges of animal abuse after her “dying” pet was spotted on a Valladolid balcony, chained to railings in the sun, at the Calle
Caamaño property. Once police officers saw the animal “panting intensely” and could not break in, firefighters were called to rescue the suffering animal. A vet confirmed the cause of death as “suffocation due to strangulation”, adding that “heatstroke” could also have been a factor. But the accused woman was later released from custody because of the state of her health.
AN evening date ended in disaster, after a woman was crushed to death by a boulder in front of her boyfriend in Mallorca.
The 24-year-old had been perched on the half-ton rock with her partner, between Calvia’s Cala Vinyes and Cala Falco, to watch the sunset. The pair were sitting on the seafront when the boulder gave way and fell on them, killing the woman instantly and crushing the man’s legs.
The 25-year-old boyfriend was able to call the emergency services and give their location despite his injuries. And firefighters had to use several hydraulic tools to lift the rock and free
the couple. A spokesman for the emergency services confirmed that the woman had died instantly, when the rock fell on top of her, and her boyfriend was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Wolf Pack victim suffered more in the trial build-up THE sexual victim of the La Manada “Wolf Pack” gang has spoken out for the first time, in a letter to a TV journalist.
The young woman revealed to Carlos Garayoa, of the Tele Cinco television channel, how she was able to face the trial. She also gave her reaction to the decision of the Supreme Court’s to find five men guilty of gang-raping her, and increasing their sentences from nine to 15 years’ jail, each. A lower court, who had acquitted the men of rape, was subjected to outrage, along with protest marches throughout Spain. The woman said the suffering she experienced, throughout three years of legal proceedings, was greater
than her torment in the 3sq/m of a Pamplona doorway in Calle Paulino Caballero. The full letter reads: “After almost three years, this process has finally been completed. It has been
long, intense, and, above all, exhausting. “The worst was not the situation I lived through, but everything that came after. But at this moment, I can assure you that it was worth
Irish smuggler held, with ton of cocaine! POLICE in Spain have arrested an Irish gang-leader fugitive, believed to have been working with Colombian cartels to smuggle cocaine into Britain.
The 49-year-old was held at his Costa del Sol home, along with a ton of cocaine, three hand-guns and €100,000 in cash. He has been sought by police in Ireland for more than 20 years, following a high-profile cannabis bust there, according to the Irish Sun newspaper. “This guy is considered a major criminal in the south, but he hasn’t been seen in the country for years,” a
source told the newspaper. “It was known that he had fled to England and was involved with other drug barons there, but he was importing drugs, primarily for the UK market, and was not of interest to the Irish Gardai (Police). “However, if he ever returns
here, he will be arrested and questioned over the 1998 seizure.” Spanish police’s elite GRECO unit carried out the arrest, which came 10 days after the fugitive escaped a similar raid, following a suspected tip-off. The Irishman was considered to head a gang, working with Colombians to import cocaine via Spain, after the National Police tracked key cartel figures. The operation has already unearthed a total of 16 suspects, held in Madrid, Barcelona and Malaga, as well as in London, Windsor and Dorset. Spanish police have so far not commented on the arrest, though it is understood that they consider the operation closed.
it. And, and little by little, I am recovering the helm of my life. “Thanks to all the people who were involved, from the very first moment, to help me. I couldn’t have been luckier with the quality of the people who have helped me. “From the examining magistrate, who never doubted me, to the lawyer who helped me on 7th July 2016, going through, without a doubt, to the prosecutor, doctors, police officers, psychologists, and the couple who found me. “These are moments when nobody knows how to act, but you made it easy. Thanks, also, to Pamplona and Navarre, who, with all their efforts, have made it easier for me to ever return. “Thanks again to those first associations and people for taking this to the streets, forming an echo in all corners of Spain. Remember, tell it… don’t let them win.” Teresa Hermida, the victim’s lawyer, has explained how the young woman feels about the court’s decision, saying: “She does not think that the Supreme Court’s ruling is good, bad or regular, but that she is calm because she has been believed. But she also says that she cannot be happy.” In addition, she has confirmed that the young woman is in psychological treatment, adding: “She is still afraid!”
Message in a bottle leaves Spain…and gets to Russia
A BRITISH schoolgirl, just four-years-old, sent a message in a bottle from the coast of Spain, which, amazingly, travelled more than 2,000 miles to a Russian river.
Taylor Powell (pictured) had thrown the bottle, containing a picture of her and a handwritten note, into the sea off Barcelona, while on a family holiday. The note invited whoever found the bottle to respond, with the name of their country and a picture. The UK-based SWNS news agency reported that a Moscow couple, named Sasha and Alex, found the message and replied to Taylor’s 31-year-old father Ritchie. Mr Powell, from Westonsuper-Mare, Somerset, told SWNS: “When I told Taylor someone had replied to the message, her face
lit up. She was so happy. “I asked them to send proof, and received a pin of their location to my phone. We were absolutely ecstatic. “We had told Taylor her the bottle would pass by mermaids and sharks, and for it to turn up in Moscow is magical for her. She’s so excited.” The bottle may have travelled around the Bay of Biscay and west of Ireland, before going across the North Sea, an expert at the National Oceanography Centre told the Telegraph Newspaper. Dr Adrian New said: “From Spain, there is a generallynorthwards current, which could take the bottle along Portugal, around the shelf break in the Bay of Biscay, then up through the Rockall Trough, west of Ireland, then up to the north of Scotland and Shetland. “Here, it could then turn southwards into the North Sea, and, possibly, transit into the Baltic and then arrive in Russia.”

Ingane Yami News
It’s sun and fun as Ingane Yami Golf reaps big bonanza PEARLY Grey hosted their 10th anniversary Ingane Yami Golf Tournament at Golf Costa Adeje on a near-perfect day, last Saturday.
It was organised by the Pearly Grey Ocean Club, and we were delighted to return for the seventh, consecutive year to this fabulous course. The competition format was the 4-ball Texas Scramble, a popular team event, and always a great choice for charity competitions. The tournament had a shotgun start at 9.30am, and the fun began! The day provided ideal weather conditions for golf, with a welcome cloud cover, taking the heat out of what would have been an extremely-hot day. Each year, we have the support of local golfing societies, who always bolster our numbers, ensuring that the event has a good turnout. Pearly Grey and Ingane Yami extend our thanks and appreciation to all the players who turned up, to help make our 10th anniversary a really
great day. Special thanks to Michael Setch and the Yellow Shirts Society, Legends Bar Golf Society and John Wilmott. Thank you also to Chris Elkington for kindly promoting our tournament, on Oasis Fm and in the Canarian Weekly. This event would not be possible without our sponsors, many of whom have been with us since our first tournament, back in 2010, and your support is greatly appreciated. As always, we welcomed some new sponsors, and we hope you will be back with us next year. The day was a great success, and, although we are still awaiting some money to come in, we estimate the total sum raised to be around €20,000. We continue to be humbled by your generosity! Our gold sponsor again this year was Girabebe SL, whose authorised Canary Island distributor, Snacks & Drinks SL, also provided a hospitality tent at the course, with free drinks for everyone. A special mention also to Estrella Damm, Pipers Crisps, Gun Powder Gin, Thatchers Cider and Fever Tree, for supplying all the day’s refreshments.

Alonso is wanting to hedge his bets
Toyota is still awaiting Alonso’s signature for the 2020 Dakar Rally
AS far as Toyota are concerned, everything is ready to go, as far as their 2020 Dakar Rally challenge is concerned… except for the signature of Fernando Alonso!
Toyota have absolutely everything ready for the Asturian to take his place in the driving seat.
The Japanese team were confident that, after finishing the 24-hour Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship, and being free of sporting commitments, they would have their man. But it seems as though Alonso is reluctant to commit himself, until F1 power politics play themselves out. It is believed that he feels as though, next season, there might be a chance of a seat for him at
one of the top two teams, Mercedes or Ferrari. That would be enough to tempt him back, and put any plans he had for the Dakar Rally on hold. Technically, he would have time to do both, because the rally and the F1 pre-season do not clash. But Alonso knows he would be expected to challenge for the title if he were to end up back in F1. And that would require full commitment!
Cats Welfare News
They’re a bit of all white! THIS adorable little boy, and his sister, are looking for a loving home. They have been wormed and deflead, and had their first injections. They are eight weeks old.
They need to be indoor cats as the sun in Tenerife is not kind to white cats. If you would like to meet them, they are at Don Perro vets in Las Chafiras (922 735 824). We have several other gorgeous kittens for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside for them to frolic to their hearts’ content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment
for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, if you would like to enquire
about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Please vaccinate! We would like to encourage everyone to vaccinate their cats and dogs. Kittens and puppies are particularly vulnerable to disease, and there are many viruses doing
the rounds, at this time of year. They can be vaccinated from only two months old. Clothes required We are appealing, please, for ladies’ dresses and tops. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. We need you! Fostering kittens is very rewarding, watching them growing and playing, feeding them and realising how dependent they are on you. It’s perfect for people who don’t want a full-time cat of their own. We are looking for foster carers, to look after bottlefeeders and weaners, as well as big kittens. You would need to be able to drive, and have somewhere safe for them. All food and litter, bedding, litter trays etc. will be supplied, and any vet bills will be paid by us. Please help us to help the kittens in need. Cats Welfare
arrange the adoptions, once the kittens are ready. Please send us a Facebook private message, if you are interested. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. They all want homes! WE have more than 200 dogs in our care who are desperately seeking loving, new homes.
Remarkably, 80 of these dogs are Canarian Podencos, whose hunting days are over. They were just abandoned, or had serious injuries and were left to die.
K9 Animal News FOR those of you who read our weekly article, you will have noticed we usually write about our dogs. But, today, it is time to get to know one of our cats.
Back in March, Babe was surrendered to K9 by her owner because she had to move to a new apartment, and wasn’t allowed to have animals. We are urgently looking for a forever home for this young cat. She is a year old, and having trouble settling in at K9. She is very friendly and FELV-FIV negative, but she is extremely stressed in our cattery. She has not settled with our other cats, one of which has been making her life very uncomfortable.
We also have more than 60 dogs who are classed as dangerous, predominantly pit bulls and Staffies. When will people be aware of the crisis that is around us, and realise that sterilisation is so important, to prevent this horrendous situation? It is almost impossible to rehome these dogs, with only one or two finding a home, occasionally. The rules are
very strict here now, and you need dangerous-dog licences and insurance, to be able to adopt them. But it is relatively easy to do, and we can help and advise you on how to comply with the legislation. Their lives are spent in kennels with small runs. They have the best care possible, but don’t have love, and the freedom to run and play. Please can we all help to ensure that we don’t let our pets breed? Also, please adopt and don’t buy! We are open throughout the summer, during our normal hours. If you have any spare time, the dogs would love a walk and some cuddles. Please do come and make a dog’s day! Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. An urgent appeal! Babe’s unhappiness is having a knock-on effect with our other cats, who are also becoming very stressed. A lot of stressed cats is not a good situation, so we really need to find her a new, loving home. Ideally, she would be a lot happier if she were the only cat. We have a lot of cats and kittens in our cattery, and the numbers seem to growing each week. This can make it even more difficult for our volunteers to make sure all our cats and kittens are OK and comfortable. Can you give Babe a home, or do you know anybody who might be able to help her? ALTHOUGH tapas isn’t historically a Canarian style of dining, in recent years it has become a popular way to eat and socialise, with visitors and locals alike. Most traditional bars, even in remote locations, have a row of steel trays under a glass cabinet, featuring more or less the same type of tapas dishes. They don’t always look particularly appetising, but the authentic setting helps boost the flavours. Generally, the best tapas bars are found in the bigger traditional towns around the island, where bite-sized offerings can range from perennial favourites, to avantgarde creations. These are the top four tapas you can eat with amigos, in most places on the island. Papas arrugadas and mojo This Canary Island speciality
5th July 2019 - 11th July 2019
Never lose your mojo is served with meat and fish, as well as on its own as tapas. Papas arrugadas are wrinkled potatoes which have been boiled in very salty water, drained and tossed in sea salt. They work particularly well when teamed with mojo rojo (a picante red salsa) and mojo verde (a savoury green salsa made with either coriander or parsley). You know you’re in a quality restaurant when the papas arrugadas are very small Canarian potatoes, like papas negras. Pimientos de Padrón These are a special variety of peppers, fried in olive oil, and sprinkled with rock salt. The name originates from the Galician town of Padrón, but most of the ones in Tenerife are grown locally, or were
cultivated on one of the other islands. What makes pimientos de Padrón rise above simply being a dish of fried peppers is that, every so often, you get one that will blow the top of your head off, which adds a
certain element of suspense to eating them. Churros de pescado Look out for a traditional restaurant that serves churros de pescado, which are, basically, fish goujons in
batter. In some restaurants, the batter is a herby one which gives it extra kick. Churros de pescado are often served with alioli (garlic mayonnaise), an accompaniment that ramps up the flavour factor even more. Croquetas caseras Another tapas dish for fans of fried food, croquetas are crispy, breadcrumb-coated balls, filled with just about anything. Most popular are ham and white fish, mixed with potato. But chicken, tuna and spinach can also turn up. Often, croquetas taste quite similar, whatever the filling, overpowered by too much potato. Which is why it’s important to go for croquetas caseras. Being definitely home-made, they are more likely to have a better balance of ingredients.

Don’t let your salad bug you LISTERIA is a harmful bacterium which can be found in many ready-to-eat foods that have already been cooked.
It can cause an illness called listeriosis. While the infection is considered rare, it has the potential to be serious, particularly if you’re pregnant or have a weak immune system. Listeria can contaminate a wide range of foods, but it is of most concern in chilled, ready-to-eat foods that do not require further cooking or reheating. The Food Standards Agency says there are several foods to be wary of. These include: cooked sliced meats, cured meats, smoked fish, cooked shellfish, blue
veined and mould-ripened soft cheese, pate, preprepared sandwiches and salads. To reduce the risk of listeria, when preparing food at home, the food hygiene body says it’s important to keep raw and ready-to-eat foods separate, to avoid cross-contamination. You should also wash fruit and vegetables thoroughly, keep chilled ready-to-eat

So what are the symptoms of listeriosis to watch out for, and when should you seek to get medical help? There are five signs to watch out for, according to the NHS. These include a high temperature of 38C or above, aches and pains, chills, feeling sick or vomiting, and diarrhoea. If you’re pregnant and think you have listeriosis, you should call your midwife straight away. You may need a blood test to check for the infection. By Val Sainsbury COCONUT oil is one of the most beloved natural remedies around. It is said to turn dull strands lustrous, whiten teeth and hydrate dry skin, and offers a whole range of other benefits.
Anecdotally, coconut oil, as a hair product, has been hailed as the ultimate all-in-one salve for ages. The oil is made up of fatty acids (triglyceride of lauric acid is the main one) and Vitamin E, so it has a lot of oil-soluble antioxidants. At room temperature it’s solid, but, by warming it up in your palms, it melts into a soft, silky liquid, at which point you can run it through your hair. What is so unique about coconut oil, more so than other options, is that research can back up a lot of the claims. For example, unlike a lot of oils that sit on top of the strand and simply coat the surface, coconut oil’s low, molecular weight has the ability to penetrate the shaft. The oil, according to another study, can actually prevent hair damage when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product. And it does so on a molecular level. Triglyceride of lauric acid has a high affinity for hair proteins,
5th July 2019 - 11th July 2019
Get a head start with coconut oil
so when it penetrates the hair, it helps the strand hold on to them. Even other oils that are made up of triglyceride of lauric acid, like sunflower seed oil, can’t make these claims. Hair is primarily made up of proteins, and, in order to be strong and healthy, it needs to keep those proteins intact. Damage, be it from heat, sun, or other environmental aggressors, will cause hair to lose these, and other, nutrients. If you looked at a single strand of hair under a microscope, you’d see
that damaged hair literally has gaps and dents in it. That’s the protein loss. On a more basic level, coconut oil helps prevent physical hair damage. When applied before brushing, before it’s absorbed, the oil will act as a physical barrier between strands, reducing friction, and helping in the detangling process. Hair can also slow signs of ageing. Just like skin, hair can age as well, because of the high antioxidant content. According to research, oxidative stress accelerates hair ageing, and applying antioxidants can temper this, by neutralising free radicals. Cosmetically, too, the oil can help reduce frizz. Frizz is caused by raised cuticles on the hair shaft, which separates individual hairs. That’s why anti-frizz products seal the cuticle flat. So, naturally, your hair can have raised cuticles. You can also make your hair more frizzprone by damaging it (with bleaching, for example), because you are chemically forcing
the cuticle up and open. Finally, frizz can be caused by humidity and moisture. When there is water in the air, the cuticle naturally opens up, absorbing the water, and the hair shaft swells. One study showed that when coconut oil was applied to hair before being put under vapour, it slowed the water diffusion. But oils should not be confused with conditioners. You actually need water to moisturise hair, and oil does not provide that. It can only seal in water. However, coconut oil actually has moisture content, meaning that when it’s absorbed, it can actually provide hydration. Does it fix split ends? Nothing can fix split ends. All you can do is trim them off. However, oils and emollients help improve the look of damaged ends by increasing shine, making them look healthier. Coconut oil can actually prevent future damage, so, if you use it regularly, you’ll likely see fewer split ends forming. Often, hair products are marketed toward
“types,” meaning straight, wavy, kinky and coily. However, that’s the wrong way to look at coconut oil. Coconut oil isn’t as much about hair type as it is about texture. If the hair is dry and coarse or damaged, then coconut oil is great. While those with curly to kinky hair tend to have coarser textures, it’s not always the case. You can have straight hair that’s dry, and you can have curly hair that’s fine and limp. In the former case, you’ll want to condition it with oils, but, in the latter, it might actually weigh down your curls. Finally, bleached hair can benefit from coconut oil because it helps with damage, and because it has a lower risk of turning the colour brassy. Any hair product with a tint to it has the potential to alter bleached hair, over time. As coconut oil goes on clear, you won’t have that issue. Application methods, should also depend on your need. They can range from quick fixes and daily hydration, to
intense treatments. If you just need to protect dry ends, an overnight oil mask might be too much for you. Or if you have severely dry hair, something like a pre-shampoo treatment might not be enough. For those who just need moisture maintenance, try a preshampoo treatment once a week, or every other week. On dry hair, coat the strands, about 30 minutes before you get in the shower. You need to give hair time to absorb the oil. How much you use will depend on how much hair you have. Then wash it out with a gentle shampoo. If you are on the coarser end of the scale, and your hair really needs the oils, just rinse with water, which will leave some residual oil on the strand. Those with kinky, coily hair can use it regularly, simply by applying it to the strands and letting it soak in. If you have that texture that really needs it, you can absolutely use coconut oil every day, which isn’t the case with most oils.

IT was business as usual for league champions Pas O Nadas A, with Luc notching another 180 as they came away from The Loch-In Bullseyes with an 8-0 whitewash.
Suters 20:30 Crew’s Ray was on good form, his maximum helping to overcome Emerald B by a 7-1 margin. Pas O Nadas International faced a tough night as they welcomed The Pub, for whom Sam scored two maximums. But the home side recorded their own highlights as Qualty hit an impressive 115 finish, followed by Gio’s brilliant 128 check-out to put Grizzly to the sword. However, his team-
mates rallied round and won 5-3, eventually. Gaffers # Team Hollywood’s Joe finished on 117 as they inflicted an away defeat on Waterfall 7-1, while Mad Hatters picked up a good point, as they welcomed Sandy Bandits and broke even at 4-4. Sandys Bookie Boys entertained Ourplace Playboys, with Alan charging in with a 180, and they opened a 4-1 lead, after the singles. But the visitors came storming back, with Nathan’s bull finish on 88 earning a 4-4 result. Pink Elephant had a brilliant night at Ourplace Playgirls, the highlight being Tom’s 180, as they demolished the home side 8-0. Palms Sports Bar also had a
whitewash, against Sundowners. However, both Maggie and Kim almost finished on 118. But, sadly, they both bust: calculators are sold at Chinatown! Scooters & Chevys B notched a 7-1 win at home to Clouseau’s, and a highly-delighted Dot wrapped up the trebles with a double-top. Club Activo’s Rob finished on 108 as they beat Marilyns 7-1, Sam being the visitors’ only winner. Ourplace Breakaways beat Picasso’s 6-2, and Emerald Lounge A repeated that winning score against Naughty Nautas, who fielded just four players. Pas O Nadas, who welcomed The Club House, were unlucky with the outcome, as the Palm Mar team claimed a 5 3 win.

Football LEICESTER were this week on the verge of signing Newcastle’s, former CD Tenerife star forward Ayoze Pérez, for around £30m.
The 25-year-old striker was granted permission to speak with Leicester, who are confident of completing a deal that will make the Spaniard their second signing of the summer, after triggering a buy-out clause in his contract. Pérez scored 12 Premier League goals last season, his excellent partnership with Salomón Rondón helping Newcastle to pull away from the relegation zone. Newcastle will make a large profit on a player signed from Tenerife for £1.5m in 2014, but his departure also leaves a sizeable hole to fill. Pérez has been Newcastle’s
SPAIN could be breeding a new generation of potential world-beaters, after topping Germany 2-1, to be crowned Under-21 Champions of Europe for the fifth time.
They gained revenge for a defeat by the same opposition in Krakow two years ago, and rivalled Italy’s record for the most titles in the UEFA competition. The Spanish players started confidently, and Luis de la Fuente’s men soon took advantage to open the scoring. Napoli’s Fabian Ruiz took a pass from Mikel Oyarzabal in the seventh minute, to beat the German keeper with a powerful leftfooter from the edge of

Ex-Tenerife star all set to join Leicester top scorer in all competitions in each of the past two seasons, netting 13 goals in the last campaign, and also reaching double figures the
year before. His arrival will increase Leicester’s attacking options, and raise the prospect of Pérez playing alongside
Jamie Vardy. Leicester have tried and failed to find a player to fulfil that secondstriker role in recent years, with Kelechi Iheanacho enduring two difficult seasons, following his arrival from Manchester City. Pérez can also play as a wide attacker, and that versatility, together with his age and his excellent Newcastle form in the second half of the season, when he scored 11 goals, made him an attractive proposition for Leicester and their manager, Brendan Rodgers. He has already added Luton’s

rest of the first half, although Germany had half-chances through Levin Öztunali and Jonathan Tah. After the break, Germany came out stronger, although
Stefan Kuntz’s young players still struggled to create real openings. The young Germans, forced to chase the game, started to leaving space at the back

Funds will be available, irrespective of Harry Maguire’s future, although Manchester United are the more likely destination for Maguire, as things stand. Manchester City have been discouraged by Leicester’s asking price, but there are also questions about whether United will be willing to pay more than £75m for the England centre-half.
as they pressed high, leaving themselves open to fast breaks. And when Alexander Nübel failed to hold a Fabián Ruiz snapshot, Dynamo Zafreb’s Dani Olmo scored Spain’s second goal. A late, long-range goal from Nadiem Amiri was no more than a consolation for the Germans. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, said: “We’ve been working for this for years. This group of players are fantastic and so talented. It’s so important for Spain and Spanish football for these young lads to get the praise they deserve. “I am more than proud of them. We’ve played so, so well at times in this tournament. I can only say well done to these players, who can make history.”

Urbano one to watch as new Spanish Coin
CARMELO Urbano, from the Malaga province of Coin, has secured victory for the Under-23 Andalucia Team, after being crowned Spain’s new road-race champion. Urbano completed the 157.8km route, ending
in Murcia’s Lorca last Saturday, in 4hr 3min 3sec, beating runnerup Arturo Gravalos by 13 seconds, with Oier Ibarguren in third place. The Coin rider is seen as one of Spain’s rising cycling stars.
