World-beaters Siam Park offering the perfect theme

Continued from Front

This recognition comes alongside a long history of awards, which recognise the success of its management, based on a perfect equation between quality, innovation and excellence. The Loro Parque Company, to which this theme park of aquatic attractions belongs, and which attracts more than 3,000,000 visitors a year, has highlighted the special honour represented by this recognition, because it is granted by the Park’s visitors and users of the TripAdvisor travel portal, thanks to their independent opinions, based on all their experiences. Blanca Zayas, Head of Communications at TripAdvisor Spain, said: “We are especially proud that a Spanish company occupies first place in the world ranking of water parks, for the sixth consecutive year. She added: “Positioning oneself as No.1 for so many years on the run is a seal of quality, recognised by users all over the world, which will, undoubtedly, open more doors to both national and international tourism.” For almost a year, visitors have been able to enjoy the latest attractions at Siam Park, such as Patong Rapids, which again breaks all the moulds, surpassing the already-incredible Mekong Rapids.

It is even faster, and stretches along 235 metres, with one section in complete darkness, making you experience a unique sense of speed and adrenaline. In addition, the little ones have been able to enjoy Coco Beach, a new children’s area for great adventures, in the company of their family. And they can also play around a fantastic, large fountain, as well as a dry jungle area, complete with bridges, towers, obstacles and nets on the Bodhi Trail. Recently Travelcircus, a prestigious German web platform, specialising in premium travel experiences, honoured Siam Park with its prestigious award of Best

Water Park in Europe. This recognition adds to the European Star Award, which Siam Park was awarded in 2018, for the seventh consecutive year, as Europe’s Best Water Park. This distinction was awarded by the Kirmes & Park Revue, the leading publication and reference in the assessment of theme parks. Siam Park maintains a line of working, which is fully respectful of the environment, employing the latest technological developments in every detail. Thus, the water that feeds the Park is part of a closed circuit, which begins at the sea. And the formula CO2=0 is applied, which means that local goods, mainly, are used in all

the catering establishments, which minimises the pollution footprint associated with the transport of imported products. This commitment to the environment has earned Siam Park the Biosphere Park

certificate from the Institute of Responsible Tourism (ITR), linked to UNESCO, which accredits responsibility for the environment, as well as ISO 14000, ISO 9000 and EMAS certifications.

Tenerife calls time on beaches’ stone towers

VOLUNTEERS in Tenerife plan to remove hundreds of the manmade stone-tower piles on beaches, because of their negative impact on the environment.

The towers have been built by tourists along the beaches of El Beril, in Costa Adeje, and Jardín, Puerto de la Cruz. Yes, they give the coastline an original and not unattractive twist. But environmentalists are far from pleased because shifting the stones from their natural “habitat” is threatening the island’s flora and fauna. In a bid to reverse the effects, a group of volunteers last week began returning them to their rightful place on

Jardín beach, returning it to its original state. Meanwhile, Adeje Council are aware of the movement on El Beril beach, a spokesperson saying: “There is a plan to remove these towers in Adeje, too. But this cannot be done by anyone. To protect the environment, it needs to be carried out by experts, working with a team of volunteers. We still have no date for this in Adeje, but it is on the agenda.” The trend for stone towers is not peculiar to the Canary Islands, but these two Tenerife beaches hold the record in Europe for the shorttime sculptures, featuring a 200-metre-long stretch of towers, 15 metres wide, along the promenades. There are places all along the Spanish coastline, where tourists and locals alike

attempt to leave their mark. But lawyer Jaime Coello maintains you’d have to go to Hawaii, Aruba or the Réunion island, in the Indian Ocean, to see anything quite on the scale of those in Tenerife. Coello is Director of the Telesforo Bravo Juan Coello Foundation, which has organised the removal of the stones on the northern beach, in collaboration with the Puerto de la Cruz Council. These mounds, used in the past for crowning graves, have been present for centuries, in the spiritual traditions of various cultures all over the world. They range from Scottish cairns, indicating the location of a grave, to the Zen tradition, in which the deceased are symbolised by the tower, and their

experiences in life by the stones. Then, in 1987, the Harmonic Convergence, a synchronised, meditation event, co-ordinated from the West Coast of America, sparked a trend for erecting the stone towers. Soon, people everywhere were doing it, usually to see how many stones they could get to balance on top of one another. The effects of these towers on the environment vary. Matías Fonte, Dean of the Official School of Biologists in the Canary Islands, says they cause the landscape’s deterioration, the extent of the impact dependent on the height of the towers. The higher the tower, the more shadow it produces… and the more pressure it exerts on the ground. Above

all, though, the towers affect the habitats of animals and plants. Below each stone, there is a vertebrate and invertebrate ecosystem of bacteria, lichens and fungus, which are disturbed when they are lifted up. Ground snails, limpets and crabs are most at risk, along with seaweed and lichen, according to Fonte. There is also a geological impact. “Moving the stones, artificially, removes information about the land on which they lie because the rocks act like books, in which we can read the story of the Earth,” says Ramón Casillas, professor of Geochemistry and Petrology at the University of La Laguna. “Man has to leave his footprint wherever he goes,” he adds.

severe back injuries. They promptly secured the man to a specialised stretcher, and took him to a nearby medical centre for treatment, as well as further testing. But

because of his injuries, an air ambulance was later requested to take the patient to Gran Canaria’s Hospital Insular for further treatment and observation.

Severe back injuries almost proved fatal A 22-YEAR-OLD man had to be pulled out of the water after nearly drowning in Fuerteventura, having injured his back in the sea at Playa de Morro.

A BIKER injured himself after crashing into a bus in Santa Cruz on Wednesday morning, just after 7.45am. The emergency services responded quickly to a call for help, and an ambulance was soon on its way to Calle Miraflores, on the corner of Valentin Sanz. The medical team soon ascertained that the biker had injured both his legs, so they made him comfortable, before taking him to Candelaria Hospital for treatment.

He was in a serious condition, and, because of his injury, he struggled, even in the shallows, and showed signs of drowning. The emergency services were contacted around 5pm on Tuesday, and the caller told the operator that the swimmer had been rescued. When the ambulance medical team arrived, they checked the man and realised that he had suffered

at 3.30 pm, when the car, reportedly, skidded out of control on a tight, right-hand bend along the TF-226, which runs from La Esperanza to Agua García. The vehicle ended up in the spectator area, coming to a halt down a small ditch. According to videos taken at

the scene, the Nissan Micra rally car was driven by M. Exposito and J. Martin, and officials confirmed that two other spectators suffered minor injuries. The rally was suspended, pending an investigation, and condolences were offered to the victim’s family.

Teenager held, after breaking man’s nose

NATIONAL Police, who arrested a 19-year-old Briton, involved in a fight in Las Americas, charged him with causing bodily harm by breaking another man’s nose. The incident happened on Sunday night at the Veronicas strip, and the victim told officers he was attacked by two foreign individuals, for no reason. According to the police statement, the man assaulted was standing outside the night-club with his friends, when a teenager walked past the

group, throwing insults at their female friends. Surprisingly, the teenager continued with his verbal abuse. and began throwing punches at the man. But the injured man escaped more harm by running away, even though his British attacker tried to follow him. Officers caught up with the teenager, who, while being arrested, let officers know that he practised martial arts, as well as recreational boxing. Doctors, who examined the injured victim, said he had suffered a head swelling, along with a fractured nose, and he was rushed to Candelaria Hospital for emergency treatment.

A MAN was arrested by the National Police on Tuesday night, after being caught dealing drugs in Veronicas.

The 23-year-old, who already has a police record for similar offences, was nabbed after officers witnessed him in action at the popular tourist spot. He actually spotted the police while dealing, and attempted to run away, but the long arm of the law soon prevailed. Once in their hands, police

performed a quick body search, confiscating 3gms of ecstasy and 9gms of cocaine, as well as 55 euros in cash. The officers analysed the substances, proving the purity of the drugs, and promptly arrested him, charging him with dealing. The man, together with the police report, will be presented before the judicial authorities. The intervention was carried out by undercover police on a special mission to prevent drug-dealing in an area notorious for drugs.

NEWS IN BRIEF Club punch-up started Pill toddler’s fight for life

at 6am… on a Sunday!

A GIRL aged three was in a critical state after swallowing a discarded ecstasy pill, left in an Ibiza playground. She was holidaying on Spain’s White Island with her mum and two sisters, when she found the tablet in a children’s park in Santa Eulalia, a popular spot with British tourists. Guardia Civil officers believe the pill had been dropped by a drug-user or dealer, and that the child mistook it for a sweet. “She was on holiday in Ibiza, and tests have confirmed that it was an ecstasy tablet,” said a Guardia spokesperson. The Russian youngster was admitted to the island’s Can Misses Hospital, but has now been airlifted to Mallorca, given her critical condition.

Toddler killed in fall

A 20-MONTH-OLD toddler died after falling from a height of four floors, from the family home in the Biscayan town of Güeñes.

The Basque Department of Security reported that the tragic incident happened around 1.30pm on Sunday. Emergency services arrived just before 4pm, but medics were unable to revive the child.

Man’s best friend proves it

A group of German mountain-walkers came across the body of a man from Gran Canaria last Sunday, while out hiking.

They were on a special walking trail, on the Roque Nublo route, inside the Tejeda municipality, close to Ayacata. The corpse was discovered at around 1.30pm and the emergency services were notified, promptly, adding that a dog was sitting next to the body. The Guardia Civil, along with a fire-fighting team and an environmentalist from the local council, responded, as well as an ambulance. It was estimated that the man had been dead for about two days, his loyal, four-legged friend never leaving his side. The man was believed to be that of a 54-year-old local, who had been reported missing since the previous Thursday. And family members said the pair went everywhere together. The dog has since been returned to the family, while the body was transferred by firemen to a specialised van, waiting to take the body for a full autopsy, to determine the cause of death.

DOZENS of people, comprising individuals from Italy and Columbia, were involved in a mammoth brawl, early last Sunday, at a popular night spot in Torviscas, Costa Adeje. The incident happened just before 6am at the club’s entrance, which is inside the Calle Valencia commercial centre. And the majority involved were caught using some type of weapon during the fracas. Investigating officers are still

looking into why the fight broke out, although sources have indicated that it was a set-up. When the incident was reported to the police, there weren’t sufficient officers to attend the scene. But around a dozen Local Police officers from Adeje were rounded up, and, immediately, attempted to resolve the situation. They identified and arrested a 20-year-old Columbian as the main perpetrator, because, as the officers were in the process of identifying the individuals, he attacked one of them and was promptly arrested. The individual, now living

in San Isidro, was originally from Columbian city Cali, known for its drug cartels. He was found with a knife in his possession when detained. In addition to being charged with disrupting public order, he was also charged with assaulting an officer, as well as causing damage to the patrol vehicle in which he was placed, to be taken to the National Police station. The individual had to be shackled in the back of the patrol car, and was accompanied by another officer, to prevent further damage. The Columbian has been identified as Sebastian M.A.

Another terrible sight of dead, washed-up whales DOZENS of dead pilot whales have again washed ashore, spotted this time by a helicopter flying over western Iceland. It follows the mass stranding of 140 whales of the same species, late last year, on a New Zealand island. According to the BBC, the current mammals were noticed by sightseers, who were being flown over a remote beach at Longufjorur. It is unclear how they beached themselves, because the entire region is secluded. But local media say that police, in the nearby town of Stykkisholmur, have been made aware of the discovery. Heart-breaking images were taken by helicopter pilot David Schwarzhans, who said: “We were flying northbound, over the beach, and then we saw them. “We were circling over it, unsure of whether they were whales, seals or dolphins. We

landed and counted about 60, but there must have been more because there were fins sticking out of the sand.” The pilot added: “It was tragic, and when we stood downwind it was smelly. It wasn’t something nice to see, and also quite shocking since there were so many.” According to marine biologist Edda Elisabet Magnusdottir, who said the mammals become disoriented when they enter shallow water. She told Iceland Monito: “Most of them have a tendency to become disorientated. The mammals, typically, swim in tight groups, which is why so many of them

became stranded at once.” The cause of cetaceans being stranded, or beached, is a phenomenon, not entirely understood. The leading theory is that whales are confused by mid-frequency, active sonar. And, as a result, they migrate to shallow waters. If disorientated, they might end up on land. From there, the most common causes of death include dehydration, collapsing under their own weight, or drowning when the high tide covers the blow hole. Whatever the cause, the pictures make for sorrowful viewing.

Prison for physio, who Dead pensioner run over by bus abused a teenage niece

A LOCAL physiotherapist, aged 49, was sentenced to eight years in prison after the courts in La Palma had heard how he had sexuallyabused his niece, who was 17 at the time. The convicted man is known by many in the area because of his profession,

and the courts heard how he had drugged his niece, intentionally, so that he could later abuse her. The sordid events happened in 2014, when the teenager visited her uncle at his home for treatment to a muscle problem. When he had the young woman half-naked, from the waist down, he offered her a shot of tequila to relax her, then spiked it with four anti-depressive pills.

The teenager lost consciousness and fell into a deep sleep, which was when he took advantage and began abusing her, sexually. The 49-year-old was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexual and professional abuse. Along with the eight-year sentence, he was also ordered to stay away from her, as well avoiding contact, for the next 17 years.

A 71-YEAR-OLD man, identified as JGM, died on Tuesday after being run over by a Titsa bus, outside a church in Punta del Hidalgo, in the San Cristobal area of La Laguna.

The emergency services were alerted and an ambulance, along with a doctor and nurse from the nearby Tejina medical centre, were sent to the scene. The medical team began to assist the pensioner, but, sadly, he died in the process. Sources say he was hit by a back wheel. The bus driver, tested for drugs and alcohol, proved negative on both counts, and officers are investigating the events.

Swimmer, 73, rescued

Service-centre man was serving himself A MAN who helped himself to €75,000 euros from the company where he worked, has been arrested by the National Police. The 49-year-old, employed at a Gran Canaria tourist information/service centre in San Bartolomo de Tirajana, was reported to the police by the owner. The events unfolded when the boss of the established centre discovered that an employee had stolen around that sum and dismissed him, immediately. The company then re-

quested that he return the money, but the former employee refused, which led to the National Police getting involved. Officers took a statement from the company and it wasn’t long before they

located the thief. Once they had identified him, they realised he had previous charges for similar offences. The man, who was charged with embezzlement, is awaiting a court hearing.

A PENSIONER’S life was saved after he experienced a close encounter with death, nearly drowning on Arona’s Las Vista beach on Tuesday afternoon. The emergency services were alerted just after 4.30pm, and an ambulance, along with a doctor and nurse from a local medical centre, soon arrived and assessed the 73-year-old, who was taken to hospital for observation. Local Police were in the vicinity to assist with the emergency

Spanish researchers have found possible Alzheimer’s cause

NEUROSCIENTISTS have discovered a protein in the brain, which could be the main cause of Alzheimer’s, and which they might, one day, be able to inhibit, in order to slow down or halt the disease.

Known as the SFRP1, the protein is found in “abnormally-high” levels in Alzheimer’s sufferers, and it continues to increase as the condition progresses. Researchers at the Severo Ochoa Molecular Biology Centre, part of Spain’s National Research Council (CSIC) and Madrid Autonomous University, who have received funding from the Tatiana Pérez de Guzman el Bueno Foundation, decided to test the causeand-effect relationship to see whether the increase in SFRP1 was a symptom of Alzheimer’s, or whether it influenced the onset and decline of the illness. Dr Paola Bovolenta and Dr Pilar Esteve carried out tests on mice, and found a positive correlation between the progression of the disease and increasing levels of SFRP1. They also discovered that when they inhibited the protein, rendering it inactive, the advance of the condition halted altogether. Neutralising the functions of SFRP1, said Dr Bovolenta, could be key in stopping Alzheimer’s getting worse in humans. And detecting it in the bloodstream or spinal cord fluid might be a way of diagnosing the condition, before symptoms begin to manifest themselves. Typically, Alzheimer’s starts in early middle-age, in the

60s or 70s, but can begin as late as the 90s and is one of the main forms of senile dementia in the very elderly. But it can appear in much younger adults, and its progression is often quicker, with reports of people in their late 30s or early 40s dying within three to five years of diagnosis. Although rare, early-age Alzheimer’s appears to be on the rise, which is devastating for close family and friends in particular, because Alzheimer’s doesn’t just affect short-term memory processing, but also takes its toll on cognitive functions in general. Spatial ability declines, and the patient, for example, is unable to judge the height and width of steps. Decision-making and other executive functions become depleted, which means that even the apparently-easiest tasks, such as what to have for dinner, become difficult and distressing. Susceptibility to stress heightens, meaning that even the most stoic and resilient of patients can become overwhelmed. Also, too much “going on around them” can cause a “meltdown”, and carers often say they seem to operate using a “parallel logic system” at odds with reality and become stubborn, intolerant and rebellious, when diverted from it. Paranoia and suspicion are frequently present, and fear of change or the unknown, and an inability to articulate their thoughts, can lead to frustration, which becomes anger, sometimes attacking those closest to them: even physically! Most Alzheimer’s patients have “lucid” flashes in between “Alzheimer’s moments”, when they are able to think clearly, recognise people whom they may have

forgotten, or understand what is going on around them. But these become fewer and shorter over time. It is now one of the main causes of elderly-care “needs” in the western world, since, physically, older people tend to be in better shape and are living longer and healthier lives. Given its huge significance in modern society, and with predictions for the first-world demographic structure in future decades pointing at between 33% and 50% of society being aged over 65, finding a suitable remedy or management system for Alzheimer’s is becoming more and more vital in public health and welfare terms. Dr Bovolenta reveals that there is still a “very long way to go” before the research in Madrid can provide any practical benefit. She adds: “Experiments and results in mice do not always work in the same way in humans, yet we have a good base. “But the origin of Alzheimer’s is based upon numerous factors, and new lines of research need to work on acting on as many of these processes as possible, which are pathologically altered in human sufferers.” The next stage would be to develop drugs that neutralise SFRP1 and continue to work to find out if other proteins present alterations in patients. Only then can clinical trials be carried out. Also, future research will need to look into whether high levels of SFRP1, in those who apparently do not suffer Alzheimer’s, are an indicator of this being in the process of developing. But they will have to monitoring these subjects to see whether the condition does, in fact, appear.

Stars queue up to back a €750m sports project How the Mirage sports resort plan for Mijas would look

A SELECTION of international sporting stars, past and present, are queueing up to back an exciting €750m sports and residential project on the Costa del Sol.

It is understood that Maria Sharapova, Rio Ferdinand and Ian Woosnam are all involved in the huge British-funded project, to revolutionise the longneglected, hippodrome racecourse, site in Mijas. The trio are just some of the big names believed to be backing the Mirage development, which includes a golf course, a multi-sports venue, a trio of hotels and over 1,000 luxury apartments, according to online newspaper the Olive Press. “This will be massive for Mijas, and will be the largest sports tourism and multi-sports events venue in Europe,” said West Midlands businessman Anthony Arnold, who is behind the project. Russian tennis ace Sharapova has been involved in the interior design, while former England football defender Ferdinand is set to add the site to his “Football Escapes” company. The firm provides premier

football coaching courses at some of the most exclusive resorts around the world. Meanwhile, Welsh golfing legend Woosnam has helped design an 18-hole golf course. The proposed project, spread over 250 hectares, will be divided into three areas, under the Mirage brand name. Mirage Sport will feature a large sporting events venue, an elite training facility and a 400-room hotel, alongside a commercial, conference and business centre. In addition, Mirage Golf will also have a hotel and 1,200 luxury apartments, alongside its course. Finally, Mirage Club is planned to be an exclusive sporting club, “designed as a lifestyle resort for the professional sports and sports business community”. It will include a five-star hotel, spa, casino and luxury apartments. An entertainment venue and university campus are also being considered for the site, according to a detailed, 17-page overview of the project. Construction is planned to begin by the middle of next year, as long as Mijas Town Hall gives it the green light. The big snag is that it has yet to form a working government, following recent local elections.

Flying-taxi prototype is developed in Spain

THE first driverless, flying-taxi prototype, developed in Spain and named Aerotaxi, could be airborne within five years.

With a capsule cabin, measuring 1.8m by 2m (5ft 11ins by 6ft 7ins), which includes a back door and upper window, the flying machine is powered by four drones, two above and two below, each of which has four engines. It is designed for short trips across towns and cities, and flies at a low altitude. It could be in use once all the necessary testing phases have been completed, and the necessary legislation put in place. This could be concluded, successfully, by around mid-2024. The Aerotaxi, presented at the Basque Country’s Tecnalia Centre for Technology in San Sebastián, is one of six prototypes of its kind in the world, and is the third in Europe to be developed, Germany and France having done so, initially.

The first test flights with people inside are expected to be carried out in the US and Japan, and pioneered in major cities such as Los Angeles and Tokyo. Two members of the 25-strong project team, Joseba Lasa and Iñaki Iglesias, say the Aerotaxi is designed to carry up to 150 kilos (23st 8lb, or 330lb), and the weight can either be human or in the shape of a goods delivery, or both. But plans have been created

so that they can be adapted for larger models, able to carry up to four human passengers. The flying machines are aimed at covering journeys of up to 15km in 10-15 minutes, travelling at 60-90km/h, and at an altitude of between 100-300m. But they will be able to reach speeds of up to 190km/h, depending on how the legal framework covering their use pans out. Aerotaxis would be able

to take off from, and land in, extremely-limited spaces, “about the size of a conventional car-parking space”, say Lasa and Iglesias, and they’d be able to withstand extreme conditions of wind and rain. Although it is early days to decide upon the type of service Aerotaxis will operate, the creators imagine them along the same lines as Uber: on-demand transport, located by mobile phone or by sight from the street. But they also believe they have the potential for emergency transport or delivering goods. To be competitive, and based upon production costs, while taking into account economies of scale if they “take off” as a transport option, Aerotaxis would need to cost around €30,000 to €50,000 apiece to buy. Contracting them would not be cheap, around €30€40 per ride, although this would be comparable with, or only slightly higher than, conventional, road-based taxi services.

Families’ fake-gun threats

A 63-YEAR-OLD man, waving around what looked like a firearm in the Santa Cruz area of Salamanca, appeared to be threatening various people gathered there: friends and family, including children. The National Police were alerted, and when officers arrived at the scene, they pointed their own weapons at the man, in the hope that he would drop whatever he was carrying. When he finally obliged, they arrested him, only to discover that the gun was a fake. The miscreant, who already had a colourful police record, was arrested and charged with dangerous, threatening behaviour. He was then taken to the police station, from where he was placed before the judicial authorities.

Magical mysteries of a hidden rainforest oasis A SPECIALISED team of conservation scientists have discovered what appears to be a hidden oasis, deep in the rainforest of Honduras, and it’s teeming with dozens of rare and endangered creatures.

The remote settlement, known as the “Lost City of the Monkey God”, or “White City”, is located in the Mosquitia rainforest, and it’s a stunning example of the biodiversity, once common across the tropics and rainforests in the region. The rainforest is home to hundreds of species of bats, butterflies and reptiles, reports the Independent newspaper. The “ecological SWAT team”, from Conservation International’s Rapid Assessment Programme (RAP), conducted their three-week expedition in 2017, after ancient ruins were discovered in the rainforest, which remains one

of the least-explored areas of the region. Their full report on the expedition was published only this week, along with its amazing array of discoveries. The report details how the pristine ecosystem is filled with a number of rare and unique species, including those previously believed

to be extinct. This includes the False Tree Coral Snake, the pale-faced bat, and a tiger beetle, which many had thought was already extinct. Twenty-two species, whose presence in Honduras had previously been unknown, were also recorded. They included the endangered

Great Green Macaw and a live bearing fish, which scientists have only now discovered. In today’s world, it seems like a tale from the “Indiana Jones” films. But the sensational, archaeological find, in an unexplored jungle, is as real as it was surprising to the explorers who ventured

there. Altogether, scientists documented 198 species of birds, 94 butterfly species, 40 of small mammals, 56 amphibian and reptile species, and 30 species of large mammals, including jaguars, ocelots and pumas, not to mention a huge variety of plants, fish, rodents and insects.

More violent behaviour in in the Penitentiary Centre TENERIFE 2 Penitentiary Centre last Friday recorded yet another bout of violent aggression by a prisoner.

An officer suffered some injuries from the attack, but he was able to continue his daily routine after treatment. The assault happened inside the prison hospital while he was carrying out his routine work duties. Suddenly, his attention was focused on an inmate, disobeying the rules. The officer approached the prisoner, hoping to calm him down, but the inmate began to stab his right arm with a pen. The 43-year-old was arrested for, allegedly, sexually-abusing a British tourist on the Troya Beach, in the Veronicas area of Las Americas. At around 3am, several young tourists approached a Local Police patrol car to say they had just witnessed a man, trying to force himself on a teenage

Rat poison ecstasy pill, kills a 19-year-old girl BRITISH party-goers have been warned about ecstasy pills, “laced with rat poison”, being sold in Mallorca after a teenage girl was killed. Alanis Moyana, 19, who was taken ill at a music festival in Son Fusteret, Palma, died on Wednesday at a Barcelona hospital. Her heartbroken family have claimed she died from a pill, laced with rat poison, and dad Paulo has promised to find “the sons of bitches” responsible. Paulo said: “I would love to know who sold my little girl this poison, so I could put a bullet in his head. “She sent us a video of her dancing on Instagram, before she was rushed to hospital. and that is the last footage I have of her alive. The following morning, a 17-year-old girl visited the National Police station to report the attack. Officers trained to work with rape victims attended to the minor, and, together with her statement, along with the images from the witnesses, helped them build a profile of the assailant. It wasn’t long before the officers arrested the Moroccan, who was presented before a judge last Saturday.

“She left for the concert looking beautiful. She showed us pictures on WhatsApp and we told her to enjoy herself, but to stay safe.” He continued: “Sons of b****** took her from me and killed her. It’s really hard to say this, but when I was with her, I had to look at one of one her tattoos to recognise her, because she didn’t look like the same girl. My beautiful Alanis, just 19!” Meanwhile, an anti-drug group have been warning Ibiza revellers to watch out for the distinctive pill. The warning said: “Some pills are doing the rounds in Palma that have rat poison in them. A girl, aged 19, has died from taking one after agonising for two days. It was a small, yellow pill with a skull on the front.”

BORIS Johnson, in his first appearance as Prime Minister in the House of Commons, showed his mettle by launching a blistering assault on the Labour front bench, during a rowdy baptism.

He laid into leader Jeremy Corbyn, after taking a grilling himself on protecting jobs, the environment and the NHS, before turning on shadow chancellor John McDonnell. Corbyn told the PM: “You have hastily thrown together a hard-right cabinet, adding generally: “His first appointment is the Home Secretary… the first Home Secretary for a generation to support the death penalty. “Can you assure the House now that your Government has no plans to try to bring back capital punishment to this country?”

Boris off to rowdy start on PM debut He questioned whether Johnson would follow his predecessor, Theresa May, in promising to end austerity but spectacularly failing to deliver. Corbyn added: “People do not trust this Prime Minister to make the right choices for the majority of the people in this country, when he’s also promising tax giveaways to the richest of big business, his own party’s funders.” Johnson responded by tearing into the Labour leader and his chancellor, seething as he told the Commons: “The reality is, we are now the party of the people.” Boris was genuinely animated

as he ripped into the Labour front bench, after Corbyn accused him of “throwing together a hard-right cabinet”. Corbyn also asked the PM to indicate when he would set out details of the exact funding settlement for schools, local authorities and police, so they could start planning. The PM responded by saying the opposition leader wanted to “put up taxes”, including some on people’s gardens, and also said he could not be trusted on Iran. He added: “How on earth could he ask about Iran, the right honourable gentleman, who has been paid by Press TV of Iran? He repeatedly sides with the mullahs of Tehran, rather than our friends in the United States, over what is happening in the Persian Gulf. “How incredible that we should even think of entrusting that gentleman with the stewardship of this country’s security.” Reacting to the vicious row, one Prime Minister supporter is said to have called it a “bloodbath”. On Brexit, Boris vowed to abolish the Irish backstop and said the current Brexit deal, agreed with the EU by Theresa May, was unacceptable. Instead, he called on the EU to re-think its refusal to renegotiate it. The 55-year-old leader said the government would set, as a top priority, preparations for a no-deal Brexit if Brussels could not agree to a different deal by the 31st October. In the first glimpse of his plan for leaving the EU, Mr Johnson said the Irish backstop, an insurance policy designed to prevent the return of a hard border between the

Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, should be abolished to move forward. He added: “It must be clearly understood that the way to the deal goes by way of the abolition of the backstop.” He also pledged vital investment in education and infrastructure, high-speed broadband and free ports, as well as unleashing the productive power of the whole UK. Boris said he would be asking the Migration Advisory Committee to look at creating an Australian-style, points-based immigration system. He told the Commons: “No one believes, more strongly than me, in the benefits of migration. Our mission is to deliver Brexit on 31st October for the purpose of uniting and re-energising our great United Kingdom, and making this country the greatest place on earth. “And when I say the greatest place on earth, I’m conscious that some may accuse me of hyperbole. But it’s useful to imagine the trajectory on which we could now be embarked. “By 2050, it’s more than possible that the UK will be the greatest and most

prosperous economy in Europe, at the centre of a new network of trade deals, which we have pioneered.” After a grilling from Corbyn over austerity cuts, made under the Conservative government, the flamboyant PM said he would never agree to a trade deal that put the NHS on the table. Meanwhile, his appointments in a totally-rearranged Cabinet the previous day will have raised a few eyebrows. The chosen few included arch-Brexiteer Jacob ReesMogg, a thorn in Theresa May’s side, who is now Leader of the Commons. The most high-profile casualty of his cull was defeated leadership rival Jeremy Hunt, who refused to accept a demotion from the Foreign Office. Others sacked included Penny Mordaunt and Liam Fox, both prominent Hunt backers, who lost their jobs, despite being committed Brexiteers. In contrast, Dominic Raab, who quit the Cabinet over Mrs May’s Brexit deal, returned as Foreign Secretary and First Secretary of State, making him Mr Johnson’s de facto deputy.

ENRIQUE Iglesias, second-born son of Spanish superstar crooner Julio, grew up among major celebrities, following his father’s speedy divorce from Enrique’s mother, Isabel Preysler.

But not a pesata of his dad’s fortune was offered to his secret love-child, Javier Sanchez, who was conceived just two months after Enrique’s birth in 1975, despite the father denying his existence for years. Now, though, a Valencia court has ruled that Javier was Iglesias’ third-born son, but the lifestyles of his doppelganger children could not be further apart. While Enrique was being pampered in elite circles, Javier hung around in a drab restaurant near Valencia’s port, where his mother, Maria Edite, scrubbed floors to make ends meet. The former ballerina revealed to online newspaper the Olive Press how an unexpected pregnancy forced her to shelve a career as a ballerina and raise her eldest child. And feeding the growing family soon put a permanent end to her former aspirations. And while Spain’s mostsuccessful singer went on to sell more than 250 million

He’s the daddy! Ex-lover Maria spills the beans on arrogant Julio

records worldwide, he still hasn’t acknowledged the existence of his 43-year-old son, officially. A bitter Maria said: “When Julio and I met, we were both stars,” she said, from her Valencia home in the El Cabanyal district. “We were equal performers on stage when we met in July 1975, in the Las Vegas music hall, in Sant Feliu de Guixols, near Girona. “But Julio destroyed my dreams, and I should have known what I was doing. But

it’s always the woman who has to pick up the pieces.” Maria may be about to reclaim those pieces, however, after Valencia Court 13 ruled that Javier will be entered into the Spanish registry as Julio Iglesias’ son. Golden boy Enrique Iglesias, a superb singer in his own right, who plays Gibraltar Calling this summer, was spoilt rotten as a youngster. But Javier’s lawyer, Fernando Osuna, told the successful, online newspaper: “The judge’s verdict means that

Julio is obliged to take responsibility, if Javier suffers illness or is in poverty. It also means that Javier will have a claim to inheritance.” The lawyer also revealed that throughout two previous court cases, which first began in 1991, Julio refused, consistently, to take a paternity test. The singer also ignored an order to attend court last month. This last legal action was sparked after a private investigator stole a bottle of water used by Julio Iglesias

Jnr, while the eldest son was surfing in Miami in May 2017. The DNA analysis proved, “with 99% accuracy”, that Javier and Julio Iglesias Jnr were brothers. The judge eventually based the verdict on their jointfather’s refusal to agree to a test, and as well as the striking facial similarities. Iglesias’s hotshot lawyers were given time to appeal the verdict, but, meanwhile, Javier and Osuna are ploughing ahead with plans to sue for moral, psychological and spiritual damages. “When Javier was 13, we tried to go backstage at a concert and introduce Julio to his son, but we were thrown out,” added Maria. “What kind of man behaves like that? And not turning up to a court summons? What is that? “We’ve suffered so much, and the press has called me every name under the sun. For Javier, though, his whole world has changed. But my victory is that I am exactly the same person, because I have always been telling the truth.”

Mother tried to kill her Down’s Syndrome girl

A MOTHER has been banned from being alone with her adult Down’s Syndrome daughter, after trying to give her an overdose of pills. The unnamed woman, from Extremadura’s Plasencia, will have to be accompanied every time she sees her daughter for the next 10 years. A Caceres Court has decided that this period is sufficient punishment for the woman, who admitted attempted murder. The court heard that the defendant had, initially, tried to kill her daughter,

and then attempted to commit suicide. The victim’s older sister has guardianship of her, and the Down’s Syndrome woman lives in a centre for people with disabilities. But she will continue to visit the family home. The defence lawyer said the mother, who was acting out of compassion, had become fixated with the idea of taking both their lives, while her mind was in a disturbed state. The court agreed, applying the complete exemption in cases of mental disorder when sentencing. It also ordered that the mother was given medical treatment for 10 years.

26th July 2019 - 1st August 2019

Teenager stunned by a glass shard in his face A BOY aged 14, who fell into a window after fainting, has had a 3.5cm shard of glass removed from his face.

The teenager had no idea the knife-shaped shard was there until he went to A&E, complaining of difficulty and pain when opening his jaw and eating. He said he had already been treated by doctors a month earlier, after injuring his face when falling into the window. But an X-ray revealed an object, concealed in the unidentified boy’s face, hidden behind his cheekbone. It was found to be glass from his accident. Doctors who treated him at Seville’s Virgen del Rocio University Hospital, said a foreign object being found in this place was a relatively rare event. When the accident, happened, he had visited a different hospital, where doctors had patched a 1cm wound on his cheek and drained from his face a haematoma, which is a collection of blood that looks like a bruise. But they appear to have missed what doctors at the University Hospital found after performing scans. A rectangular object about 3.5cm in length, on the left side of the boy’s face, was faintly evident in the X-ray. That led doctors to order a CT scan, that confirmed a

foreign body, which, said one, had the shape of a knife blade hidden behind the boy’s cheekbone. The penetration was unusual because this area of the face was well protected by the cheekbone, said the authors in the Journal of Emergency Medicine. The boy went into the operating theatre, where surgeons extracted the glass through his mouth with forceps. After the surgery, the boy was able to move his jaw again, and he reported that he’d suffered no complications when he had a check-up six months later. But the story would have

been very different had the glass entered through the temporal area, said doctors. It could have damaged the muscles and nerves, used to open the jaw and make facial expressions. Slashes to the neck or face, from injury, are not uncommon at the hospital. But only a small percentage are complicated by a foreign body getting inside: usually wood, glass, metal, plastic or stone. Detection can take a while if the symptoms are vague, or there has been no clinical suspicion. But in this case, the doctors were aware that the boy had fallen into the window, recently.

Missing woman ‘was buried by farmhand’ The Algar village, where the woman’s body was found

THE body of British ex-pat pensioner Lesley Pearson, 74, reported missing last Wednesday after she failed to return a hire car, was found by the Guardia Police, buried very close to her farm in the Algar region of Cadiz. Officers soon arrested a 45-year-old man, described as a “farmhand”, who had worked on the woman’s property in Sierra de Cadiz de Algar. A Guardia spokesman said: “I can confirm that a body was discovered in the immediate vicinity of a property in Algar. As a result, officers have arrested a local man, who will appear in court shortly.” According to neighbours, the “much-loved” woman, who lost her husband two years ago, was planning to move to a property she owned in Estepona, on the Costa del Sol.

She wanted to integrate more with the British community after her husband’s death. But Mrs Pearson, who had lived for decades in Casa Lele, a rustic estate in Tajo de Aguila, was murdered before she had the chance. During a search of her property last Sunday, Guardia officers found her body, barely buried, with clear signs of violence. “We were shocked to the core,” neighbour Isabel told the local press. The officers, believed to have evidence that incriminates the farmhand, arrested the farmhand known only as F.J.B.P. The 45-year-old, in charge of maintaining the Casa Lele estate, was jailed in Arcos de la Frontera, where he awaits a judge. Locals describe the alleged killer as a normal person, from a good family, one saying: “We were surprised because he was a quiet guy, who worked on the farm.” A minute’s silence was held outside the Town Hall.

Crash kills baby, just one year old A ONE-YEAROLD Belgian baby was among three fatalities, following a tragic car crash near El Campello, on the Costa Blanca.

Paramedics attempted to resuscitate the child, without success, according to sources from the Emergency Information and Co-ordination Centre (CICU). A Dutchman, aged 61, was confirmed as another fatality, but the third victim is not yet known, though the two cars involved had Dutch and Belgian number plates. Police believe the crash, which happened where the motorway forks, might have been instigated by one of the drivers taking a risky turning. The accident happened at 3pm last Sunday, when the cars crashed into other with ex-

treme force, just one kilometre before the toll. Two ambulances were mobilised, immediately, alongside a basic life-support vehicle and a helicopter, as well as Guardia Civil traffic officers. Alicante County Council also sent five fire-brigade units to the site, and two helicopters. Three more people are understood to be in hospital, two in Alicante’s General Hospital, and one in the Hospital de Sant Joan d’Alacant. Traffic, heading towards Alicante, was diverted from the ring road to the A-70, to enable victims to be rescued. The road remained closed for three hours, before the AP-7 reopened after 6pm. What caused the accident is not known, but one theory is that one of the vehicles reduced speed, suddenly, or made a risky manoeuvre to change lanes, before a fork in the road.

IF you have family living outside the EU/ EEA, they should no longer have to suffer higher taxes imposed under the state rules for Spanish succession and gift tax. With Brexit imminent, this is very welcome news for UK nationals. In Spain, inheritance tax (‘succession and gift tax’ or ‘SSGT’) is governed by both the state and the Autonomous Communities. Each of these 17 communities has the right to amend the state rules to

26th July 2019 - 1st August 2019

Spain can’t discriminate against non-EU/EEA countries

make them more beneficial, as several have done over recent years, including here in the Canary Islands. There has been a general trend towards substantial reliefs and increased allowances, resulting in almost total exemption from inheritance and gift tax, in certain cases. Until 2015, your heirs could only benefit from the more beneficial regional rules if you were “habitually resident” in that region. However, the European Court of Justice ruled that this treatment was discriminatory - it went against the EU principle of free movement of people and capital - and, therefore, Spain was forced to amend its legislation, so that the regional SSGT rules could apply to anyone resident in the EU or EEA (European Economic Area).

While this was very welcome, heirs resident in, say, Australia or the US, or even the UK, following Brexit, could pay much more tax than if they lived in the EU. In February 2018, the Spanish Supreme Court published a judgement confirming that the Spanish succession and gift-tax rules breach the free movement of capital, established by the EU Treaty, in relation to non-residents. Following this, the Spanish DGT (‘Dirección General de Tributos’/General Directorate of Taxes) published some binding rulings in December, confirming that the SSGT rules should be applicable to all non-residents, regardless of whether they reside in an EU/EEA member state or a third country. Therefore, the exclusion of third countries, in relation to the

Deputy mayor arrested for growing marijuana

application of SSGT law, should not be taken into account. Following these rulings, some taxpayers claimed for refunds for succession and gift tax, paid under the discriminative rules. We have since heard that many of these claims (requested within the Spanish statute of limitations) have been successful, and taxpayers have started to receive refunds from the tax office in Spain. Although the tax law has still not been changed in this regard, it appears that the Spanish tax authority now officially accepts the application of the regional rules, instead of the less favourable state rules, where a third party (i.e. nonEU/EEA) is involved. The European Commission seems satisfied with this approach, and has, therefore, dismissed its official denouncement against the discriminatory rules, previously filed by some Spanish lawyers. In summary, if you now leave or gift assets to heirs who are not resident in the EU/ EEA, they should be able to claim the application of the

regional rules, instead of the less-favourable state ones. This, of course, is particularly good news for UK nationals, after Brexit. Anyone who believes they have unfairly paid succession tax, under the state rules, should speak to their Spanish tax accountant about making a claim. Please do not hesitate to contact Blevins Franks for more information about the regional Canary Islands succession and gift tax rules, or for advice on effective estate planning, to reduce Spanish and UK inheritance taxes, and achieve your wishes for your heirs. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Dodgy claim has left a man on ‘crime’ charge

A SPANISH politician, from the conservative Popular Party (PP), resigned from office last Thursday after being arrested for an indoor marijuanagrowing operation, as well as the theft of electricity. Manuel Palma stepped down as Deputy Mayor of El Valle, in the southern Spanish province of Granada, nearly two weeks after being arrested by the police. In early July, officers discovered 256 marijuana plants inside a house in El Padul, a municipality just 15 minutes away from El Valle. In a statement released by the PP branch in Granada,

Palma, who also resigned as Youth and Sport Councillor in El Valle, maintained that he was innocent of the charges. He decided to resign, he said, “so as to not hurt the Popular Party name, or my colleagues at El Valle Council”. The National Police issued a press release 10 days ago, stating that they had arrested two men in a house, with two rooms set up to grow marijuana. But they did not identify the detainees publicly. It was not until last Wednesday that Spanish magazine “Ideal” revealed that one of the men was the Deputy Mayor of El Valle, home to around 1,200 people. The El Valle Mayor, Benjamín Ortega, who belongs to a local party called Residents for El Valle, was sworn into office on 15th June, thanks to

the votes of two councillors from his own party and two from the PP, which, together, outnumbered the three Socialist Party (PSOE) councillors. Ortega had refused to ask for Palma’s resignation, arguing that he would wait for more conclusive evidence in the police investigation. It was the Granada branch of the PP which forced Palma to step down as deputy mayor. Ortega told the reputable EL PAÍS daily newspaper that the situation in the local council had now “returned to normal”. In the press release, Granada’s Popular Party “applauded” Palma’s decision to resign and said the party door would be “open” to him, “once the situation has been favourably resolved”.

THE Guardia Civil suspect that a Nijar man’s claim about someone stealing €3,900 from his car is untrue.

The Guardia said investigations revealed that the vehicle’s roof canvas had been damaged, adding that a robber would need to have known about the cash, and exactly where it had been hidden.

Meanwhile, a chronological reconstruction of the facts put 35-year old M.H. in a games hall, playing roulette, at the time when, supposedly, he discovered his money had been taken, “his version of events being impossible”, said a Guardia statement. It also pointed out that M.H. had “spent long periods of time” in a number of different games halls. He now faces charges of simulating a crime.

How much does class still matter in Britain’s elite professions? Is working hard enough, or are your chances in life still determined by where you come from? In this one-hour documentary, the BBC’s media editor Amol Rajan (pictured right) spends time with graduates from very different backgrounds at that crucial moment: when university ends and the job search begins. Amol explores both ends of the scale, as Amaan and Elvis, two working-class lads who have their sights set on becoming city boys, struggle to nail down the interviews that will give them that crucial ‘foot in the door’. Leeds students Dominique and Jack also find out ‘it’s not what you know it’s who you know’, as they seek careers in the media industry, whose mystifying cultural codes prove an obstacle to many candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds. So what factors can help you break into the elite? Privately-educated Ben seems to perform confidently on a work experience placement, while others, like Amaan, appear to struggle in an interview scenario - suggesting confidence is hard to find if society doesn’t validate the way you look and behave. When it comes to top professions, the London School of Ecomonic’s Sam Friedman explains that grads from working-class backgrounds with top degrees are much less likely to get elite jobs than their more privileged counterparts. So how does this all tally with Amol’s own experience? Coming from relatively humble beginnings as the son of Indian immigrants, he now has the career in media that he used to dream about. He turns to his first boss, Talk Radio’s Matthew Wright, to find out how he got the gig. Matthew, who turns out to be a bit of a class warrior himself, explains he was looking for another ‘ordinary bloke’ in an industry dominated by elites.

was at the centre of a creative and rt and producing films. With so many n their work, he brings the focus back ral disrupters of their time.

Episode one: Cherry Bakewells. Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey get access to some of the biggest factories in Britain and Europe, to follow the 24hour production lines that produce our favourite products. Gregg Wallace is in Stoke-on-Trent, at an enormous bakery where they produce 250,000 individual Bakewell Tarts every day. He follows their production, from the arrival of 27 tonnes of flour right through to dispatch. Along the way he learns what makes a shortcrust pastry ‘short’ and discovers the simple way they ensure every cherry is precisely placed. They employ a team of 12 who carefully pop each one on top by hand. Meanwhile Cherry Healey (pictured) is learning how to swerve a ‘soggy bottom’ when baking pies and tarts at home. She discovers that it’s all about a pre-heated oven, a proper pie dish, pastry precisely the thickness of two x 20 pence pieces laid on top of each other, and blind baking. And she’s at an almond butter factory, learning how these nuts are roasted and milled to become a thick spread ready for toast. Historian Ruth Goodman is sniffing out the origins of one of the Cherry Bakewell’s key ingredients, frangipane. She learns that the familiar fragrant almond filling was born out of a perfume used to disguise the foul smells of 17th century Paris. She also visits the Peak District town of Bakewell and learns how the modern Cherry Bakewell is a descendent of a simple recipe mistake in the kitchen.

In the first episode, Ranvir and her experts meet the Laherty family from Bury in Greater Manchester, aiming to help them to ditch their regular takeaway run and get an expensive chocolate habit under control. The other families keen to kick their unhealthy habits are super spenders the Todds from Sunderland; new parents the Vastas from Bolton, whose weight has become a serious health concern; and the Thomas family from Northamptonshire, who eat takeaways virtually every night. This time around the families will also meet former Eat, Shop, Save champions who have significantly transformed their lives after taking part in previous series. At a time of rising inflation, with families feeling burned out, when weekly grocery budgets are being stretched by high prices at the checkouts, and with the UK being the most overweight country in Western Europe, Ranvir and her team of experts meet a new family each week, who are facing a range of issues. In each half-hour episode, Ranvir sets the families an eightweek challenge, with the experts on hand to offer tips along the way - helping them to eat better, get fitter, shop savvy and ultimately save money.

BBC1, 21.00 Love is in the air in the penultimate episode of Still Game, as the gang rally together to create an unforgettable wedding day for one of the pals. There’s lots to organise - the food, the flowers, the venue and the wedding band - but the friends all say ‘I do!’ to making a love match to remember. Jack and Victor have a chance encounter with their old pal Andy Forrester who brags about being a big wig museum curator. Listening to Andy, the pals feel like underachievers but all is not as it seems. Winston’s found happiness with his lady friend Winnie. During a particularly enjoyable day - which involved winding up Stevie the Bookie - the excitement gets too much for him and a surprise wedding proposal slips out. Back in The Clansman, Winston announces he’s getting hitched, opting for a quick wedding just days away. The only trouble is Winston’s promised Winnie the world, but doesn’t have the means to make their dream wedding a reality. Unable to tell his fiancé the truth, Winston digs himself deeper - so Jack, Victor, Tam, Isa, and Navid band together to give the couple the perfect day. Boabby dusts off his wee black book to find a wedding band to get the party started, while Jack and Victor turn to their old curator pal Andy for the romantic venue.

For some animals, group play can lead to friendships that last a lifetime. To cope with the challenges of living in large societies, one of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzee, uses play to work out who they can trust within the troop. In a field experiment, a troop of chacma baboons is given a selection of new toys to play with. This test sheds light on an age-old question that surrounds human behaviour: are males and females biologically programmed to play in different ways, or are the differences that we see a result of social influences from parents and peers? The results are striking: the male baboons go for the active toys like the trucks, while the females go for the dolls, suggesting that there is an innate component to play. In animal species governed by a strict hierarchy, group play is the one occasion when those rigid social barriers can be broken down. Spotted hyenas live in one of the most brutal societies in the animal kingdom. New research is finding that play can offer a moment of respite for them. Scientists think it may be vitally important for the survival of the clan, uniting all of its members. In the mountains of New Zealand, scientists have noticed that with flocks of kea parrots, playful antics appear to be contagious - where one plays, the others follow. But how do they communicate their intention to play? Their secret could lie in their ‘play call’, which encourages other nearby parrots to join in with the fun and games. It can allow keas to flit from flock to flock and co-exist peacefully.

The votes have been counted and after a Top 10 countdown we can reveal the number one favourite family dish. Chef Phil Vickery wows us one more time with his own super healthy, low cost and of course mouth-watering version - and we challenge a couple to see if they can recreate Phil’s winning dish at home in their own kitchen. In this final episode, Sian and nutrition therapist Ian Marber look at the latest food trends. What’s hot and what’s really not. As well as savoury ice cream, they look at insects as potential mainstream food, and Sian even tries some. Plus, we’ll be putting kitchen gadgets to the test to see whether they can make those everyday chores easier and to find what’s out there at what price. This week four tin openers from the everyday to the super luxe are put through a Save Money road test.

This new documentary series for ITV goes behind the walls of a most extraordinary little prison - on the Isle of Man - where doing time is unlike anywhere else in Britain. The Isle of Man, with a population of 85,000 is a proud self-governing island with its own legal system and prison regime, perceived to have a harsh sentencing policy and the only jail is a one-stop shop for all offenders convicted there. The prison has some of the lowest reoffending rates in Europe - purportedly due to its progressive penal policies. Because of the island’s small population many of the prisoners and the staff already know each other, and men, women and youths are banged up together. This series paints a picture of how girlfriends and boyfriends, even generations of the same family, serve sentences next door to each other. It focuses on the extraordinary stories of the prison staff and its inmates, including big characters like governor Bob, who uses his wealth of experience behind bars to implement his progressive ideas, hardline head of security Margo, personal shopper to the prisoners George ‘Stores’, and Jonesy the singing prison officer. The programme also explores the relationships between girlfriend and boyfriend Goldie and Lorraine, father and son Ross Sr and Ross Jr, and blossoming friendships between prisoner and prison officer Jonno and Jonesy. Throughout the series inmates with convictions from fraud to robbery, drug dealing to cyber crime, mix together with staff at all levels from Governor to Head of Security to officers - and talk candidly about life on the inside of this prison like no other.

Restaurant owner must cough up €4m in assets

31 CW

Lawyer caught speeding, on way to Spanish court!

AN expat restaurateur in Marbella, accused of serious drug crimes, must hand over assets worth €4m to the European Court of Justice.

Niko Ranta-aho, who owns Teatro restaurant in Puerto Banus, was arrested in Helsinki last week alongside his body-building girlfriend Sofia Belorfia. The woman, crowned BikiniFitness World Champion in 2015, stands accused of money-laundering. The pair denied the charges at the weekend but Helsinki’s district court has continued to hold them in prison, ordering the €4million seizure of worth of assets from Rantaaho. “The District Court believes that Ranta-aho could try to hide or destroy this property,” said a spokesperson, while a source told online newspaper the Olive Press: “The amount, typically, correlates with the alleged proceeds concerning the crimes.” According to prosecutor Erkki Huhtala, who is connected with the case, the sum is possibly the largest-ever in Finland drug crimes. RantaAho doesn’t have any assets in Finland, so this will most likely lead to the search for assets in Spain. Ranta-Aho owns Teatro restaurant, in the upmarket Puerto Banus resort, popular with holiday-makers. The dinner-and-show-style venue has seen the likes of Ja Rule and Tyga perform, and Ranta-Aho also owns ER Property, which, says its website, has sold villas worth more than €1m on the Costa del Sol. Ranta-Aho often shows off his envious car collection online, including a white Lamborghini and Mercedes 4×4. But both could now be seized, along with other assets, as the investigations in Spain and Finland continue. Belorfia, meanwhile, who had over 60,000 Instagram followers, appeared to be living the life of luxury, and she was often pictured in swanky pads with her small, white dog. But according to respected Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, the pair may have been involved in the narcotics business with Finland’s Hells Angels. It comes after the boss of the Finnish arm of the biker group was hunted down on the same day as Ranta-aho and Belorfia. He was also imprisoned on

A LAWYER from Yecla is believed to have been charged with reckless driving, while on his way to court to represent a client … who was charged with the same offence!

At least, that’s what a Government official claims. The lawyer’s client was in a traffic accident last September and has been fighting the case since then. The lawyer might now be in the same predicament as his client, after he was said to have been trying to make up time by speeding at over 200km/h, down the A-33 from

Murcia, because he was late for the hearing. Coincidentally, the same Guardia Civil officers, who were supposed to testify in the court case against the lawyer’s client, were those who ended up stopping him after a helicopter had been following the attorney’s vehicle from Murcia. The charge for breaking the speed limit by such a large margin constitutes three to six months in jail, a €6,000 fine or community service. The lawyer’s own personal attorney has said that although his client was driving quickly, he was not reckless because nobody was in direct danger.

serious drug charges last weekend, and Helsingin Sanomat has also reported that he is suspected of being involved with Ranta-aho and Belorfia. Police have refused to comment on the suspected links, but court documents revealed that 65kg of illegal drugs were found during raids in Spain last week. Helsinki criminal commissioner Charles Lehmus told the press that the authorities were investigating a “big operation”, mostly dealing in cocaine. But Lehmus did not reveal the exact number of suspects, hinting: “When there is a big operation like this, the

number of suspects is pretty large.” According to information provided to Helsingin Sanomat, the case includes several drug types, but the focus is on cocainetrafficking. Belorfia’s defence lawyer, Paul Perovuo, said she knew nothing about where her partner’s money came from. “The police claim it is moneylaundering if you live with someone who gets caught with funds, alleged to have been illegally earned,” he added. “But Sofia didn’t know where the money came from.” Her Instagram account has since been taken down.

A 28-YEAR-OLD woman died after taking an overdose of a slimming product, accidentally.

Teresa CP passed away in the Hospital Don BenitoVillanueva, in Badajoz, Extremadura, after, it was thought, an acute intoxication by lipoic acid, a food product used to lose weight, as well as being a vitamin supplement. A post-mortem is being carried out on the woman, who was a nurse. She died last Friday morning (19th July), a day after entering

the hospital. Apparently, she took a much higher dose than recommended, mistakenly, after buying the product over the Internet. She went into a coma, and, despite resuscitation efforts, suffered brain death through multi-organ failure, some 24 hours after her admission. The slimming product is often used by athletes, especially fitness practitioners, as an antioxidant and food supplement. The dosage is usually one or two capsules daily, but it is not known how many the victim took.

London to be as warm as Barcelona, by 2050!

IN just over 30 years, the climate in Madrid will be very similar to that of present-day Marrakech, and that of London will, almost certainly, be a match for today’s heat in Barcelona.

Research at the Federal Polytechnic School (ETH) in Zürich, Switzerland, published in the science magazine Plos One, concludes that 77% of major cities worldwide will have an extremely different climate in the year 2050 to that of 2019. In fact, most of those in the northern hemisphere will feel more like those 1,000km south, and those in the

southern hemisphere will feel like those 1,000km further north. Londoners are having a taste of it at the moment, and they could be basking in months of summer warmth, cooling down considerably by mid-October… but still not needing a coat for nearly another month. In Madrid, sweltering summers like those of the southern Moroccan city of Marrakech may not be noticed much for their rise in temperature, given that the Spanish capital is always baking from June to early September. But the humidity might be greater, and the warm weather start earlier and finish later, with daytime November temperatures

around 23ºC to 25ºC, with no heating or covers needed at night. The research also

Spaniard caught with hash… in his trainers

A SPANISH man, who attempted to smuggle €2,000 of hash in his trainers, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil.

The man, from Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city on the north coast of Africa, was handcuffed by officers in the Port of Algeciras. Police discovered the drug, weighing 1.2kg and wrapped in 120 pellets, concealed in his sneakers. The shoes, black Nike Air Force 1 trainers, had been altered to conceal the hash in the tongues, and in cavities under the insoles.

Tax officers stopped the man at customs, after he arrived from Ceuta, noting that he seemed “nervous”. The haul comes just days after a Colombian man

was detained at Barcelona Airport after police found half-a-kilo of cocaine under his toupee, which left thousands of people in stitches.

shows that the climate in Stockholm, Sweden, similar to that of Scotland right now, will be closer to that of Budapest, Hungary, which is roughly that of midFrance. And Moscow, with its punishingly-cold winters, in double figures below zero, will feel more like that of Sofia, Bulgaria, which is slightly warmer than the mildest year-round temperatures in middle England. Basing their investigation on 520 of the world’s largest cities, the Swiss research team found that over 75% of metropolitan areas will have a temperature and humidity level of those 1,000km closer to the tropics. The remaining 23% of cities, all of which are the closest to the equator, will not see much change in temperature. But they will have much longer droughts and rainy seasons. In fact, 22% of the world’s cities, by 2050, will have a climate régime “which does not exist anywhere on the

planet today” rising to 30% of those closest to the equator, which will generally be drier. These figures are based upon “the most optimistic scenarios”, say scientists. The study is aimed at helping town planners and other authorities prepare their cities for the future. For example, new buildings in the south of England, as well as central and northern Europe, might need to be fitted with air-conditioning, and designed so the sun can be filtered out in summer. Other infrastructure, like public outdoor swimming pools, could also be required. Global warming in the last few thousand years has already made a big difference to temperatures, and it also changes the face of crops and wildlife, native to various countries. Spain’s northern region of Cantabria, for example, until about 12,000 years ago, had a climate similar to that of the north of Scotland.

Drug vandals hunted down by huge investigation team A TOTAL of 23 suspects have been detained as part of a major investigation into an international, hashishtrafficking network, operating in Almeria and Seville, among other areas. Most of the arrests took place in Spain, with another one in the Dominican Republic and two in Morocco. Another four individuals in the Caribbean island are under investigation in the operation, which involved National Police, Guardia Civil and the Tax Agency, with the collaboration of the Moroccan and Dominican police, and also the judicial authorities. Twenty properties, with a combined value of €2m, have been embargoed as part of the operation. In addition, the authorities have seized €3.5m in cash, eight top-of-the-range vehicles and 16,000 kilos of hashish. Charges levelled at the suspects include crimes against public health, illegal possession of arms, and also money-laundering. The operation was first launched in 2017, when a sum of more than €300,000, in €20 and €50 notes, was found in a luxury vehicle, owned by a French citizen with a drugtrafficking record. Working together, the Spanish and Moroccan authorities connected the Frenchman with the leaders of a gang uncovered earlier

in the year, following the seizure of 7,400kg of hash, on the border between Western Sahara and Mauritania. It was destined to be transported to Spain through agricultural-product import businesses. Investigators established that they were dealing with an international, highly-structured network, dedicated to trafficking large volumes of the drug into this country, via lorries and transport companies. As the investigations progressed, the authorities developed a theory that the drug-trafficking profits were being laundered in the Caribbean, after they had seized a suitcase, destined

for the Dominican Republic in which there was hidden €165,000. In April last year, the investigation resulted in the seizure of a lorry in Almeria, supposedly transporting ceramic tiles. But it was actually carrying 7,200kg of hash and €177,000 in cash. It was the latest in a series of hits against the network, which prompted the criminals to try to get their illegal profits out the country. Shortly after this, and in collaboration with the Dominican National Drug Control Agency and the US Anti-Drug Department, a container was opened in which was hidden more than €690,000. In July last year, the

authorities came across a shipment of 1,350kg of hash in a Seville industrial estate. And at the beginning of November, one of the mules who took consignments from Moroccan producers to network members in Spain, was intercepted with €85,000. The large volume of documentation seized, combined with the complexity of the international financial structure, established by the trafficking ring to launder cash, meant it wasn’t until this May that the authorities raided 12 properties in Spain and five in the Dominican Republic. The head of the entire organisation is among those now under arrest.

The closure of all but one of his 23 Italian restaurants has left the flamboyant chef with losses of around £25m. In May this year, out of the blue, the company announced that it would be closing the doors to its flagship restaurants, leaving over 1,000 staff without employment. Jamie, reportedly, used £1m of his own personal funds to pay the wages of the staff who lost their jobs, and used £18m of investment from his personal, holding-account company, Jamie Oliver Holdings, to inject into the business. These personal investments were bolstered by creditors including HSBC, who put forward a staggering £39.4million in secured loans. According to reports, he has currently paid the UK bank back a total of £4.7m and has made assurances for the remaining balance. He will now focus on his new chain of healthy deli takeaways, in international airports around the world, the latest of which opened in Malaga airport this year.

200 extra police to bolster safety at holiday hot-spot MORE than 200 extra National Police officers have been deployed on the Spanish holiday hot-spot of Costa del Sol, to boost security during the peak tourist season.

National Police sources said the officers will be shared between the Costa del Sol’s main holiday destinations, under the Interior Ministry’s Safe Tourism Plan. Malaga City is set to get 60 extra officers, while 35 are will be in Marbella. A further 25 will go to Torremolinos and Benalmadena, and Fuengirola, Estepona and

Velez-Malaga will each get 20. A total of 15 will be based at Antequera, and 10 will cover Ronda. The officers are recent graduates from the Avila Police Academy, in Castilla y Leon. They are being deployed on the Costa del Sol, in part, to hone skills learned at the academy.

Three people hurt during knife fights

THREE people were injured when a fight, involving knives, broke out in La Palma’s Puerto Naos car park last Sunday evening.

The battle, which began for reasons yet to be confirmed, was staged at the island’s Los Llanos de Aridane, known to many as La Isla Bonita (The Beautiful Island). The emergency services were soon alerted and ambulances were sent to the scene. The medical team immediately attended to the needs of a 29-year-old man, who had suffered serious stab wounds. He was stabilised, and then taken to La Palma’s General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Irishman wore €28,000 watch, ‘stolen by thief’ a day earlier

AN Irish tourist was arrested at Malaga airport, on suspicion of staging the theft of his Rolex watch in Marbella. The 56-year-old was, reportedly, “stunned” when National Police officers handcuffed him as he was checking into his flight on last Tuesday. He was, brazenly, wearing the €28,000 watch that, he had told Marbella investigators the day before, had been snatched from him

by a stranger in Puerto Banus. The holiday-maker made the claims in a local police station in the upmarket resort, but agents weren’t buying it. They began digging and failed to find witnesses, or any evidence that backed up the Irishman’s account. They were so suspicious that they agreed to arrest the tourist before he boarded his flight back to Ireland the next day. Police believe he wanted to collect the insurance for the ‘stolen’ watch. Instead, he will now face fraud charges.

A BRITISH expatriate is preparing to journey from the Costa del Sol to the top of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, to raise money to buy prosthetic limbs for a young Marbella woman. Chris Grenfell, who lives in Elviria, is set to swim for five kilometres, before cycling 200km, from the Marbella Arch to Granada City next Saturday (3rd August). It is in aid of Sarah Almagro Vallejo, who lost her hands and feet at the age of 18, after developing septicaemia last year. Chris, an Ironman contestant, is working alongside the Somos tu Ola (We Are Your Wave) foundation, which was set up to raise money for her. He and fellow-Ironman participant Jasen Riley will then run 50km to the top of Pico Veleta, in Granada, Andalucia, on the steepest tarmac road in Europe. And all in 24 hours. He hopes to raise €3,000

for Sarah’s prosthetic limbs. Chris told Euro Weekly News that he was moved to take up the challenge after a friend told him Sarah’s story. “I was training at the gym and my friend told me about Sarah,” he said. “I don’t normally cry, and I’m not normally an emotional person. But when I heard her story, it really affected me. How can that happen?” Chris has performed similar challenges previously, and, when he considered doing another one, Sarah came to mind. “Sarah is a bright and sporty girl. If you meet her, you’ll see that she’s so positive, and she has chosen to get on with her life despite everything,” he said. “We are asking people to dig deep into their pockets, because we will be digging deep into our reserves to complete this challenge!”

Fake assault… fake theft!

Drink or alcohol to blame for 43% of road fatalities MORE than 43% of last year’s fatal road accidents in Spain stemmed from a drunken driver, or one who had taken drugs, according to the country’s National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF).

It proved to be the highest total in this bracket since 2012, but 1,806 people actually lost their lives on Spanish roads last year, which was 24 fewer than in 2017, and the first decline since 2013. Data showed that 94.4% of those who tested positive for drugs or alcohol intake at the wheel were men, and 65.7% were aged between 25 and 54

years. Some 56% were driving cars, while 31.4% were riding motorcycles or scooters. And slightly more than 61% involved alcohol. Drugs were involved in 44% of all cases while 25% involved medication. INTCF figures also determined that 38.5% of the 143 pedestrians killed tested positive for alcohol or drugs.

A BRITISH man was arrested after pretending to police that he’d been robbed in Benidorm.

The 45-year-old made a falsified denuncia, claiming two thugs had assaulted him from behind and knocked him unconscious. In the imaginary tussle, the

thieves stole a watch worth €8,900, a phone and bank cards. The man also claimed that €2,170 had been taken from his account. But CCTV records above the Benidorm cashpoint showed the same man extracting the money on five occasions, over a two-day period. He will, reportedly, soon appear before a judge.

Expat murders wife, - and stabs himself!

Corrupt judge is given six months A CORRUPT court judge had to be dragged out of an American courtroom by police to begin a six-month prison sentence, which had taken five years to uphold.

Juvenile judge Tracie Hunter was found guilty of giving her brother, a former government employee, confidential records to help him keep his job in Hamilton County, Ohio. The packed courtroom erupted after Judge Patrick Dinkelacker executed Hunter’s sentence, which she received in 2014. But it had been delayed while she appealed the conviction. A video of the courtroom brawl shows Hunter’s supporters rushing in to confront the judge and police, as bystanders protested the ruling loudly. In the scrum of bodies, a woman wearing a shirt that read “Justice for Judge Tracie M Hunter” is seen being handcuffed, as Hunter is dragged off camera by an officer. Hunter’s case was hotly

disputed in Cincinnati and involves her brother, Stephen Hunter, who worked as a youth corrections officer when he allegedly struck a juvenile offender in July, 2013. The incident led to Stephen Hunter’s firing. Prosecutors say that Tracie Hunter,

improperly, demanded documents about the teen, then gave them to her brother. In 2010, she became the first African-American elected to Hamilton County’s Juvenile Court, and she had stressed that her conviction was politically motivated.

The horrific attack happened in Calpe, just before 1.30am last Monday, and her daughter found the body, according to the Guardia Civil. The woman, who had married her 61-year-old killer just four years ago, was discovered on the floor with a fatal wound to the thorax. Her husband was bleeding from four, self-inflicted knife wounds. The couple, of Belgian nationality, are understood to have been registered in

Calpe for four months. The brutal attack was a “gender violence” crime, according to the Valencian Community’s Delegation for Gender Violence. It has been recorded as the 1,009th death since the numbers of women killed by their partners or ex-partners began, in 2003. A minute’s silence was held in Calpe. The Guardia Civil confirmed that the couple had lived in Calpe for two years, yet registered themselves only this year, in March. Calpe Mayor Ana Sala said: “Nothing justifies this crime. We absolutely condemn this tragedy, which has tarnished the tranquil summer we were enjoying in this municipality. “We hope that incidents like this are never repeated in Calpe; or anywhere else!”

K9 Animal News

Enzo needs your patience! FOR those of you who are familiar with K9, or who come up and volunteer to walk our dogs, you will know that some of our dogs have been there for two or three years, on average.

We did have some dogs who had been here for six or seven years, but they finally found their forever homes, and got their happy-everafters! Five years ago, Enzo was brought to the attention of K9. What started out as a normal day for Enzo quickly changed, when his owner put him into the car, and drove him to K9. He took him out of the car, and just drove off. Enzo was only about one or two years old at the time. Can you imagine how confused and scared he must have felt? He had just been abandoned by someone whom he trusted, and now he was alone. Of

course, we immediately took him in, and started to look

after him. Fast forward to the present day, and Enzo is still

at K9. When he first arrived, he was a friendly, sweet boy who enjoyed his walks and cuddles, and then there an unfortunate incident at the kennels. A couple of years ago, three dogs were stolen, and Enzo was one of these dogs. We are not sure for what they were wanted, but, about a week later, they were all brought back, by a gentleman who had found them, nearby. The other two dogs stolen in this incident have since been happily adopted, but not Enzo. He has one slight issue; he doesn’t like people to touch him. Something happened to him when he was stolen, because he came back a different dog. It is unfair on Enzo because he didn’t ask for this, and it was not his fault. Enzo won’t react to you if you feed him or give him treats, but if you overstep his comfort zone and try to pet him, he will react. We currently have him training classes once a week, to try to help him overcome this

massive fear he has. We believe that, with consistency and more training, Enzo will be able to get back to his normal self again, and enjoy the pleasure of cuddles from his favourite human. As you can see from the photo, he is a big, white, fluffy ball, and looks very sweet. He needs to get out of the kennels, and grow old comfortably in a soft bed, surrounded by people who love him, and have patience with him. If you are interested in meeting Enzo, please be aware that it will take some time to gain his trust, but, if you persist, the hard work will pay off! If you are interested in getting to know Enzo, and welcoming him into your home, please call at K9, any day, between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com

A picture paints a Animal thousand words charities

in Tenerife

THIS phrase springs to mind, when you see such happy dogs experiencing the love and kindness that they so deserve.

Some lovely Polish students visited the refuge and walked the dogs to the beach, a gentle 15-minute stroll, each way. The four dogs had so much fun, and a cool-down in the sea. Please do come and exercise a dog, or two, during our opening hours. Over 200 are waiting for a walk, until they find their new homes. They enjoy it so much, and it’s great for the soul, knowing that you are doing something good to help the abandoned dogs, here in Tenerife . Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm.

Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find

us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol.

Cats Welfare have had to cut back, drastically, on sterilising. All trap-pers have been stopped, except for emergencies, which include pregnant, injured and sick cats, plus kittens.

We will still feed the 20+ colonies, of course. Our vet bills are extremely high again, because we find it hard to say no when colonies need catching, and cats need help. It’s impossible to carry on the way we have been doing. A couple of months ago we were over €14,000 in debt, and started a GoFundMe page which helped, but, sadly, the bills are right back up again. We use four vets who are all wonderful, but, at the end of the day, they need paying because they are businesses, and have bills to pay themelves. We receive numerous calls and messages on a daily basis. Several are from people who have been passed to us from other charities. People sometimes become annoyed when we explain our financial situation, and that we don’t have a refuge because we can’t afford one. “But so and so said you would help” is the usual response. It’s well known that Tenerife is more of a dog island, but all types of animal need help. We have started a page on Facebook, Animal Charities in Tenerife, listing every animal charity in Tenerife. So far, we’ve found nearly 50, which is incredible, because most people seem to think

that Cats Welfare is one of only half a dozen charities here. The idea is that the care of the cats and kittens can be shared, to ease the burden on Cats Welfare. Meet Clide This little boy is about four months old. He has been wormed, and deflead, and has had his first vaccination. He’s a little shy, but really good with dogs and children. Adoption We have several other gorgeous cats and kittens available for adoption. Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, Sharon (English) if you would like to enquire about them. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

The restaurant Imperio del Pintxo is located on Paseo Marcial Garcia 23, which is the front walkway in El Medano, to the left of the Hotel Medano. It can be found at the end of the street which overlooks the sea on the edge of a little tranquil bay, with small fishing boats stacked up by the water’s edge. It is a special little restaurant, brought to you by the same family who own Mr Chen in Los Cristianos, but this is their original restaurant, which opened several years ago. The idea of world-fusion food, in tapas-size portions, is obviously what this family has success with. They offer traditional dishes, from here in the Canaries, to some radical infusion delights, which have won awards in Tenerife. One of these dishes is the Crazy King Prawns, the winner in Ruta de la Tapa 2014. This dish is also served in Mr Chen. Imperio del Pintxo is one of El Medano’s hidden gems. On arrival, we were greeted by brother and sister combination, Yi and Mei. We sat at our table, outside on the walkway, so we could take in the atmosphere of this quaint passage. It had a typical Spanish feel about it, with a cosmopolitan touch, and, as a special bonus in

this area, you have a lovely view of the Atlantic Ocean, from the table. In the warm afternoon air,

with the sun keeping us vitalised, we were served a chilled bottle of wine. We started to work our

way through the menu, asking our host for his recommendations. His great, confident answer was: “I recommend it all!” So we all decided to go with his advice, and ordered a selection of dishes, so we could experience a lot of the different flavours and ideas. When we say different, there are many new inspirational thoughts from the owners, throughout the menu.

We ordered the Sauteed Cheese with whisky reduction, the awardwinning Crazy King Prawns, a Salmon Tartare with raspberries, and a Tuna Maki with strawberries. A few people reading this may think that sounds weird, but, until you try those last two dishes, you won’t understand how good they taste. We were blown away by the way the flavours combined so well. We then tried the La Palma smoked-cheese parcels with apple chutney, the crispy baby octopus with bravas potatoes, and the Foie Gras terrine with grilled apples, all with delicate infusions and amazing flavours that made our taste buds tingle. A couple of other dishes caught our eye: the Rice Emperador with Parmesan Cheese Flakes, Traditional Pad Thai, and Stacked Fillet Steak with crispy pastry. The Pulled Ox tail was cleverly cooked because it was on the bone. But when you put your fork into it, it fell off like pulled pork. We all agreed that the combinations and flavours of all the dishes we tried were such a refreshing change from the normal run-of-the-mill restaurants on this island, and couldn’t understand why we hadn’t visited this place before. As we all know, there are many restaurants that have their unique ways of preparing and cooking food, which makes this island so exciting. This restaurant is definitely one of those places. After finishing all these dishes we wanted to try more, but that would have to wait for the next visit, because we couldn’t fit another morsel into our stomachs. The sun was now setting over the sea, and it was time to work off the food, and walk along the beach of this beautiful town, watching the last of the surfers hitting the waves, before darkness descended. What a perfect way to finish a fantastic afternoon. Imperio del Pintxo is open every day, 11am-11pm. For reservations, please call 922 176 304. Check out their Facebook page, for more details.

By Val Sainsbury IF you find you’re suffering from brain fog, chronic fatigue, insomnia, depression, migraines or inflammation, you may have a problem with an internal mould infection.

Mould toxicity is a common, often hidden, source of declining health, and is associated with an astounding number of health issues. Thriving in humid climates, or wherever water damage is present, the fungus releases spores into the environment, which infiltrate the air, along with carpets and furniture, clothing, mattresses and bedding. People living or working within these spaces inhale the spores, which then reproduce in the body and, for the more harmful varieties, subsequently release mycotoxins. Mould and mycotoxins can also be ingested through contaminated food. Those with suppressed MANY people dread going to the dentist. Even if it’s just a short visit for filling dental cavities, the idea of someone drilling into your teeth and hearing that grating sound can be the stuff of nightmares. But researchers may have found a way to treat cavities without the need for drilling, instead using the understanding of how natural tooth-forming proteins work, to fight cavities. Treating cavities with proteins In a 2015 study published

immunity, leaky-gut syndrome or other health issues, are at higher risk for developing a problem with mould. It’s important to remember, however, that a large majority of the population is suffering from low-grade immunity issues because of the nearconstant bombardment of environmental pollutants, genetically-modified organisms, and decline of nutrients in the food supply. Limit contact and detoxify If you believe that you have

an issue with mould, the following protocol can help: *Of primary concern is to establish whether your home or work environment is nontoxic by hiring a qualified inspector. Keep in mind that, often, mould may not be readily apparent, especially if there’s black mould growing within the wall, bedding or furniture *Once the environment has been thoroughly evaluated, and the mouldy structure remedied, installing a full-

house air-purifying system is the next course of action. Cleaning surfaces with white vinegar or ammonia helps remove fungal spores as well. If you live in a damp climate, a dehumidifier will help keep spores in check. Also, keep air-conditioning units in good repair, and opt for annual cleaning *Diet is crucial when contending with mould infections. Avoid edibles that “feed” mould, such as coffee and black tea, sugar, starches,

grains, cheese, refined carbohydrates, fermented foods, soy sauce, vinegar (except unpasteurised apple cider vinegar), peanuts, pistachios, mushrooms and yeast (both brewers and nutritional). In addition, always source B vitamins that are free from yeast or mould cultures. Likewise, many antibiotics are derived from mould. Instead, focus on berries, nonstarch vegetables, with the exception of carrots, (which are antifungal), grass-fed meats, pastured poultry and eggs, sardines, wild-caught salmon, yogurt and kefir. Additionally, chia, hemp and pumpkin seeds, walnuts, almonds, pecans, coconut and olive oil, garlic, ginger and turmeric are excellent foods, too. For a full list of safe foods, have a look at the Kaufmann antifungal diet. Mycotoxins - toxic substances produced by fungi or moulds - are everywhere in the environment, and are capable of damaging multiple biochemical mechanisms, resulting in a variety of human symptoms, referred to as “mycotoxicosis”.

Fear of dentists may be a thing of the past in the Journal of Dental Research, it was found that as many as 2.4 billion people in the world have cavities. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that cavities are the most-widespread, noncommunicable disease, which can severely affect the quality of life.

People who have cavities may find it difficult to eat and sleep. If they reach an advanced stage (abscess), they may even cause a chronic systemic infection. Cavities can be a serious problem, and the researchers at the University of Washington School of Dentistry looked to the mechanisms behind natural, tooth-forming proteins, for a possible source of treatment. Their findings led them to a new alternative method that repairs damaged tooth enamel, without using a drill. Researchers studied amelogenin, the protein required to form crown enamel, and came up with amelogenin-derived peptides. Peptides are fundamental components of cells that carry out certain functions, such as potentially repairing tooth enamel.

The newly-devised peptides will be used as the active ingredient in the new treatment proposed by the study. They have been tested in the lab, and were proven to bind onto tooth surfaces, and recruit calcium and phosphate ions. While still currently in development, the new peptide-based treatment is expected to come in the form of toothpaste, gels and solutions. This will allow the treatment of cavities, without the currently-practised

dental procedures. Prevention is the best cure It’s possible to prevent cavities altogether, so that you can avoid needing treatments in the first place. Brushing and flossing daily are essential, but to take that a step further, here are some tips to keep cavities at bay: *Identify your cavity risk level: the key is prevention, and knowing your cavity risk level as early as possible is one of the best ways to prevent cavities. To determine

your cavity risk level, visit your dentist and ask for a comprehensive dental exam. In this way, you can be informed about the possible treatments that you might need, to improve your oral health *Brush your teeth regularly: brushing teeth is the most effective way to prevent cavities, because it gets rid of bacteria and plaque. An overgrowth of bacteria in the mouth can produce acid, which can damage the enamel of the teeth. Brushing your teeth after meals, and before going to bed, is paramount *Decrease consumption of sugary and acidic drinks: drinking beverages that contain high amounts of acid and sugar increases the risk of cavities. If you really want to enjoy your morning coffee, try to finish it in 20 minutes, or less. Then, rinse your mouth with water, to remove excess sugar and acid. Being proactive in taking care of your oral health reduces your risk of many dental-related problems.

CDT pre-season well underway!

CD Tenerife

CD TENERIFE kicked off preseason at Tenerife Top Training in La Caleta, on Sunday evening, against local team CD Aguilas, giving new coach Aritz López Garai a chance to see his players for the first time in a match situation, albeit very much a friendly. Garai fielded all three of his new summer signings, Adrián Ortolá, Álex Bermejo and Dani Gómez, and was pleased to see Aitor Sanz returning to fitness, as his team strolled to a leisurely 9-0 win, which could have been more because they missed a penalty and had another disallowed. Adrián Ortolá has arrived from Barcelona, where he played in goal for Barca B for three seasons, before going out on loan to Alavés and Deportivo La Coruña. Garai believes he will bring good commitment and dedication to the club, and provide valuable back-up for first-choice keeper Dani Hernandez, who is now nearly 34. The following morning, after their second day at T3, defender Isma López met the press and answered questions about the new players, and Garai’s 4-3-3 formation, saying: “The team have good feelings about the new coach, his ideas and tactics, plus, the new players are creating a very exciting atmosphere and are eager to demonstrate their talents.” Garai gave a positive assessment of what he called a training session, rather than a match, when he made it

clear that the result was not a priority and that matches like this are “to put our training ideas into practice”. He also spoke about the possible departures of Filip Malbašić and Luis Milla, saying: “If they have to leave for financial reasons, then it’s a shame, as they are very important players for us.” This was a reaction to Spain’s new wage-capping rule in Division 2, which is affecting all clubs leading up to the new season. That’s because they are struggling to meet the players’ minimum wages, set by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol (RFEF). Basically, the annual wage can be subsidised by transfer fees, which means many players are having to move

clubs so that these directives are met. On Wednesday, Tenerife completed two new signings for the club, bringing in players to strengthen the defence. Róbert Mazáň, a 25-year-old Slovakian left-back, comes on a season-long loan from Celta Vigo, although he played just three games for the La Liga club and spent most his time

out on loan in Italy, at Venezia, while American right-back Shaq Moore joins the club on a three-year contract. The 22-year-old has been at Levante UD for the last three years, making only eight appearances for the first team. He featured mainly in the B team, and had a loan spell at Reus, although he has had international experience at under-17s, 18s and 20s. On his arrival at the club, he said: “I am very happy to take this step in my career, in a team as large and historic as CD Tenerife. I want to help the club achieve their objectives.” Later that night, CDT had their second pre-season friendly, an annual fixture against CD Marino at the Estadio Antonio Domínguez, in Playa Las Americas. Tenerife came out with a strong, starting X1, who could easily be fielded on the first day of the season. And, from the first minute, the blue-andwhites dominated possession, with Aitor Sanz the key. López Garai, as with CD Águilas in the first pre-season game, started with a 4-3-3 formation, putting Suso Santana and José Naranjo up front. But CD Marino were wellorganised in the middle of the pitch, leaving no room for any interior passes for Tenerife, who had to try to penetrate down the right wing. This passage of play led to a corner-kick and the first goal of the game, Borja Lasso heading home in the 14th

minute. Only two minutes later came the second goal, a longrange shot from Naranjo, who took advantage of a poor Marino goal-kick. In the 22nd minute, CDT extended their lead, thanks to good play by Luis Milla, who left Malbasic one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and he didn’t miss, making it 3-0. The Serbian striker added another as CD Marino became scrappy at the back, Naranjo giving Malbasic a lovely through-ball, which he slotted home to make it 4-0 after 28 minutes. The second half saw changes from Garai, who sent out Dani Hernández, Fede, Carlos Ruiz, Samuel, Jeremy, Undabarrena, Javi Alonso, Bermejo, Borja Llarena, Dani Gómez, Josué, in a mixture of new signings and old faithfuls. The pace of the game was slower than the first half, and CDT didn’t look as fluid or dangerous. Marino spent more time in their opposition’s half, but lacked the spark needed to break the visitors’ defence, leaving a somewhat lacklustre 45 minutes, to finish goalless. All in all, a good week for the new CDT coach, players, and fans, with pre-season getting underway well, and the addition of some new blood into the squad. All of a sudden, it doesn’t seem so long until the first league game of the season, against Zaragoza on 17th August!

They’re the Gaffers alright! THE Division 1 top spot has been claimed by Gaffers# Teamhollywood, whose 8-0 triumph demolished a spirited, but unsuccessful, Sandys Bandits.

Sandys Bookie Boys had a much better result when welcoming The Pub, thanks to two maximum scores from Alan, and success in the trebles, which helped them to a 4-4 draw against “Grizzly’s high fliers”. Pas O Nadas International, who travelled to Suters to face the 20:30 Crew, quickly opened a 3-1 lead. But Steve and Ed led the fightback with 180s, and Ray added a 171, to help the home team clean up the rest,

securing a 5-3 win. Mad Hatters hosted Ourplace Playboys and found themselves on the wrong end of a 7-1 defeat, as the Silencio boys demonstrated their fine form. Emerald B faced a short trip to Loch Inn Bullseyes, where Ken helped himself to a 180, as the visitors eased to a 7-1 win. As usual, hitting those elusive doubles made the difference. Waterfall played Scooters & Chevys A, and proved too good on the night, winning 6-2, while Pink Elephant had an impressive result, coming away from Naughty Nautas with an 8-0 whitewash. Palms Sports went into an early 3-2 lead against visiting Club House (pictured below). But Charlie’s 180 inspired his team-

mates, who bounced back to win the 701 game, securing a 5-3 victory. Our Place Playgirls are buzzing these days, and Shah hit a 180 in her team’s 6-2 home win against Marilyns. Pas O Nadas fought out a close game with Clouseaus, and won the trebles for a 5-3 success. Club Activo entertained Picassos, and the game went to the wire, with Sergio hitting a 180, to match his teammate, also named Sergio, who hit a maximum, earlier in the season. Activo won the final game, to earn an excellent 4-4 draw. Emerald Lounge’s Matt was in excellent form, hitting a tasty 119 check-out. But Sundowners hit back in the trebles, to secure a 4-4 draw.

Nadal to replace yacht with a €4m catamaran SPANISH tennis legend Rafa Nadal is preparing to sell his yacht, named “Beethoven”, for a €4m catamaran, following a sailing holiday on one in the Bahamas. The Mallorca superstar is putting his 23-metre boat up for sale, following a family trip around the Caribbean on a luxury, Sunreef 74 Chrissy. This year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist and French Open champion, set to marry his long-time sweetheart Xisca later this year, is believed to have ordered a similar, 30-metre catamaran. The Sunreef catamarans come with seven cabins, large spaces to store jet skis and kayaks, and they also have deck terraces, which can be accessed directly from the main lounge.

Rugby

What’s this rugby all about?

By Heike

SOMETIMES I ask my son, who began playing with Adeje’s Ñandú Rugby Club when he was five, and, eight years on, he is still playing there: “What is it you like about rugby?”

He replies: “First of all, Mom, it is open for everybody, no matter whether they are thin or big, fast or slow, tall or tiny. “Rugby has a place for everyone, because there are different positions in the team, and every single player is important, to complete the whole 15-strong team.” He then tells me he likes to have full contact with other players, to see how strong he is, compared with his opponents, and how to deal

with the opponents… how to handle those situations, together with his teammates. Nowadays, when we read and hear so much about intolerance against others, because of their physical aspect, age, gender, race, etc, it is becoming more and more important that children grow up with an open mind. They need to look behind the surface of another person, and get to know each other, forming a bond to feel strong, and make their friends feel strong as well. And respect is also an important factor! I see my son, regularly, playing against boys from other clubs, and all of them trying their best, giving the opponents a hard time trying to score tries to win the game. But beforehand, when wait-

ing for the bus to get to the matches, I often see him greet players, especially those he would be playing against. He sits down and talks with them while awaiting the bus. Then, once the game is over, they will even share more time, while enjoying a sandwich together, or a drink. When they meet at school, they make fun of each other (“just wait until we meet on the pitch again”), but always respectfully. In a world where we tend to educate our children to work and function as though they were machines, all being better, faster, stronger, and competing more and more, isn’t it more important not to lose those values, such as respect, fair game, friendship, tolerance and acceptance? And there’s the discipline of obeying the laws of

rugby, as well as accepting the referee’s decision with respect and humility. There is also the commitment of training every week, to work as a team and trust in the others to work together, so they can be successful. Ñandú Rugby Club was founded in 2004 in Adeje, and, since then, it has worked as a non-profit sports club. The boys who want to join the club will have to pay a monthly fee, used to buy material, training T-shirts, kits for the games, financial help for trips to tournaments away from the island, trophies, etc. All coaches work on a voluntary basis, as do the administrative staff behind the scenes. The club is always happy to find people who would like to get involved in any possible

Junior footballers SPANISH authorities are searching for two 14-yearolds from Sierra Leone, who disappeared after competing in a major, junior football competition, in the Basque city of San Sebastián. The pair had travelled to the northern city in early July to compete in the 28th Donosti Cup, as members of the Diamond Child team. But on 13th July, when it was time for the team to return to Freetown, they escaped through a window in the middle of the night and disappeared. The minors, who have no money or contacts in the region, have not been seen

since, according to Basque regional government’s security department. Anthony Seydu, President of the NGO Diamond Child School of Arts and Culture, and legal guardian of the minors, reported them missing to the Basque police force, the Ertzaintza, hours

Jerry Lee rocks the boxing world

JERRY Lee Palmer brought home Gold last weekend from the Spanish Amateur Boxing Championships, held at the Juancho Pérez de Badajoz Pavilion in mainland Spain.

The Tenerife boxer demonstrated her skill by beating two strong opponents in her weight division, to become women’s Spanish National Boxing Champion. The England-born boxer, fighting out of the Dynamite Dominguez Boxing School, has been raised in Tenerife since the age of two, and she won all three rounds in her two fights at middleweight. Firstly, she beat Madrid’s Andrea Humbrías, who had two standing counts, and then flattened Galician Olga Vázquez, knocking her to the canvas in the second round. It was a convincing night for Jerry Lee, the first British female to hold a Spanish boxing title, and she is aiming to represent Spain in the upcoming European Boxing Championships in Madrid, which start on 24th August. Jerry Lee told Canarian Weekly: ‘I’ve achieved my first goal by becoming Spanish champion after just eight fights, but there is a long way to go yet. “I need to continue my amateur career to gain more experience at the highest

Joshua must sort out revenge-match venue

Ruiz Jnr and Joshua, before the champ’s shock loss

PROMOTER Barry Hearn has revealed that fallen world h e a v y w e i g h t champion Anthony Joshua’s rematch with shock conqueror Andy Ruiz must be finalised by tomorrow (Saturday).

level possible, before I even consider turning professional, either here or in the UK.” Jerry Lee, currently training two or three times a day, follows a strict regime to stay in peak condition. And, at 24, she is aware that she must grasp this opportunity with both hands. She adding: “Women’s boxing has really taken off in the last few years, with

people like world champion Katie Taylor and double Olympic champion Nicola Adams leading the way, so I have to take advantage of every opening I get. “As long as my papers are in order in time for the end of August, I could also become European Champion.” From us all at Canarian Weekly, good luck Jerry Lee, and watch this space!

Joshua, determined to avenge his only professional defeat, must decide where to stage the most important clash of his career: his rematch with Andy Ruiz Jnr. Fight fans have been waiting for an official announcement from Team AJ about the rematch, because Ruiz last week confirmed that talks had stalled, both parties disagreeing over the location. However, Joshua has final say on the venue and Matchroom chief Hearn said the heavyweight had to make a call this week. He told Betfred: “It’s gets more and more complicated every day. Cardiff and

Madison Square are the two primary choices for Ruiz Jr to defend his three major world titles. “But two other venues have come in during the last few days, outside the UK. It’s a huge fight, and you never want to lose. But if you’re going lose, make sure the rematch is massive… and this is massive!” He added: “It’s all on Joshua’s desk, because he’s the governor and he makes the call. But it has to be this week, because of training times and preparation times.” Ruiz Jr will be the defending champion, after pulling off one of the greatest shocks in heavyweight history in June. Joshua activated his rematch clause, just days after his defeat, and Ruiz Jr recently issued an update on negotiations. “We’re still in negotiations, but they are trying to make us go over there,” he said. “We are trying to get it back here in New York, where I’d be more comfortable.”

footballers vanish, after reaching major final

after they disappeared. Seydu said the two fled last Saturday between 2-6am: “They had escaped through the window of the residential centre, where they were staying during the tournament, he added. “They were sharing a room with three other players when they fled. The other boys

were sleeping and didn’t hear anything. But we are obviously worried about their whereabouts. “We have shared a photo of them in case anyone sees them and can help us find them. Their names are Momodu Sesay Inonnson and Alimamy Kanu, and we ask for respect in this delicate matter and that any message must be sent privately. “We know they don’t have any contacts in Spain. They are young boys, who have been part of our school for many years, and we have seen them grow.” The Diamond Child footballers, who made it all the way to the junior final, before losing, had

travelled to San Sebastián, thanks to the Gipuzkoa provincial parliament, which approved €4,000 in funding in April to bring the team, plus two other sides, the Israeli’s Al-Bustan and Palestine’s Not to Forget Jenin, to the city for the competition. The Donosti Cup is the largest, international, junior football tournament in Spain, and the fifth biggest in Europe. This year, 7,500 footballers, aged between 11 and 18, from 27 countries, took part in the competition. The Donosti Cup Foundation has a tradition of inviting teams from developing countries. Four years ago, boys from a Mozambique orphanage were asked to take part. In 2017,

Madrid’s Dragones de Lavapiés competed, and this year, the Sierra Leone team, along with and a girls’ side from Palestine, participated. The Diamond Childs excelled by reaching the final, only to be beaten by Catalan side Atlètic Segre CA. The Spanish Embassy helped the Diamond Child footballers to get visas so they could compete. Now, though, Seydu is not only worried about the two youngsters, but concerned that the boys’ disappearance will jeopardise future trips to Spain for other teams. “I think they they used this situation very poorly,” he said. “Now, we might not be able to offer this possibility to other children in Sierra Leone,” he said.

The police and the NGO are in contact with the boys’ families in Sierra Leone, in case they contact their relatives and provide some clue as to their whereabouts. Seydu believes the pair decided to escape “because they have the perspective that everything is easy in the West”. He added: “They are not aware that, if you escape, you will soon find yourself on the street. They won’t know anybody, not even the language, and they will end up sleeping on the street, which worries me. “Now it’s sunny, but winter will begin soon and it will be harder for them. All our effort is going towards finding them as soon as possible.”
