Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.5% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. It is vital to be legal, says Embassy chief

BRITAIN’S Ambassador to Spain has warned expats, in his Brexit update, that those in mainland Spain and on the islands, including Tenerife, that it is “vital” that they and their families are registered properly. Simon Manley, the outgoing Ambassador, who leaves at the end of this month, said Britain’s new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, had been “absolutely clear” that the country would leave the EU on Thursday, 31st October, with or without a deal. As a result, British nationals need to be registered before that date to ensure that they can benefit from measures outlined by the Spanish Government, covering a no-deal outcome, including healthcare and residency. The Ambassador, who has all but completed his scheduled time as Ambassador here, added: “It is essential we prepare for the possibility of

a no-deal, which is exactly what we’re going to do.” Manley’s comments came as Boris Johnson’s entry into 10 Downing Street brought forward the prospect of Britain leaving the EU without a deal. He has said, repeatedly, that he would prefer to leave with a deal but he stresses that Brexit must happen by the October deadline… “do or die!” His new ministerial appointments, which include making Brexiteers Dominic Raab and Jacob Rees-Mogg Foreign Secretary and Leader of the House of Commons respectively, also signalled a turn towards a harder Brexit line than predecessor Theresa May. So far, after his first week or so in charge, Boris has shown how firm a Prime Minister he will be, by letting EU ministers know just how tough he is with his UK demands.

Glassed victim loses one eye in club fight

THE National Police have arrested a Moroccan man for glassing a person in the face, resulting in him losing an eye.

The victim was with a group of friends inside a nightclub in the area of Las Verónicas, when a man tried to steal a mobile phone. An argument started as both parties were leaving the premises, and a fight started, in which the man attacked the 21-yearold victim with a broken glass, which resulted in him

suffering deep facial cuts. Given the seriousness of the injuries, the victim was taken to Candelaria Hospital, where he spent 10 days having treatment. As a result of his injuries, and after several surgeries, he finally lost one eye. After days of research in the area, the National Police were able to identify his assailant and arrest the 25-year-old, who was already known to the police for committing several crimes in the area. The case and evidence have been passed over to Judicial Authority.

Eternal blessing for Teide National Park Tenerife Cabildo hosted a meeting on Wednesday with Kevin de la Noy and Karl McMilan, producers at Disney, which owns the cinematographic rights for Marvel. And the Cabildo is delighted to have scenes from the “The Eternals” shot on the island. This meeting with the Tenerife Government was arranged to show the technical aspects necessary for shooting this blockbuster on the island, and, more specifically, in Teide National Park. This will become a prehistoric settlement in the next few months to more than a dozen superstars, including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Richard Madden.

The Eternals is a major part of the next phase of Marvel movies, following the success of The Avengers, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, which End Game brought to a close last year, in spectacular fashion. The saga of the Eternals is a race of immortal beings, who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilisations, and filming has already started in London, before they now head to Tenerife for the major part of shooting. The American producer agreed to preserve the Teide environment during filming, and assured the Minister of the Area of Planning of the Territory, Historical Heritage and Tourism, José Gregorio

Martín Plata, the Minister of Natural Environment and Security, Isabel García, the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Canary Islands Government, Juan Márquez; the director of the Tenerife Film Commission, Ricardo Martíne, and Teide National Park director Manuel Durbán, that this will be the case. The film, based on Jack Kirby’s comics, will use the services of SUR-Film, which is based on the islands. The company was also involved in the production of other films made here, such as Fast and Furious 6 (Universal) and Fury of the Titans (Warner). The Eternals is scheduled for worldwide release on 6th November 2020.

Witness description let police arrest thief easily

A 27-YEAR-OLD man, alleged to have committed robbery with force in Adeje’s Salytien Shopping Centre, was arrested by National Police, who recovered a cash register, along with €746 and £470, which he had stolen.

Officers had received a report of two men, forcing entry into a locale in the shopping centre and taking goods. They were then seen running out of the mall. Thanks to witness reports, the police were able to

intercept one of them, who matched one of the descriptions provided. After searching his belongings, they found two sachets with notes and coins inside. They also

recovered a cash register, which had been taken and abandoned around the beach area of del Bobo. The suspected was arrested, and transferred to the Local Police Station.

Palm tree cannot save drug dealer

NATIONAL Police, who arrested a man in Arona with a record for drug-dealing, uncovered 32gm of marijuana, in 13 heatsealed bags, 4gm of cocaine and a gram of crack, hidden in a palm tree and all ready for immediate sale.

He was also carrying 145 euros in cash, thought to be from goods already sold. Beforehand, two men, one a tourist, were seen by the police together in the street making an exchange. When they realised the police presence, the tourist suddenly fled, while the other man tried, quickly, to hide the drugs in a palm tree next to him. Officers arrested the man, transferring him, the drugs and the money to the police station.

Police hold drunk Brit couple, with three kids

A BRITISH couple have been arrested for being drunk and disorderly in Gibraltar airport, with their three children in tow. The 54-year-old father and the mother, a year younger, were just about to get on the plane for home when the woman fell over in front of her children.

Tenerife is top of the list for family holidays overseas

Airport police promptly arrested and charged the couple with being drunk, and, supposedly, in charge of their kids. Paramedics were also called to deal with the situation, because the woman had, reportedly, caused a scene in the departures lounge, and was behaving recklessly. She was also charged with criminal damage, on top of the original offences. The children, who were taken into police custody, will remain with Social Services until a court decides what to do with their parents.

TENERIFE is the most popular family destination for package holidays abroad, with Turkey, Majorca and the Algarve also ranking highly. But expensive locations like Ibiza, Orlando and Dubai have proved less popular.

British holiday-makers are counting their pennies and shunning expensive destinations for those where they can squeeze as much value from their sterling, according to new data. And in the race to be named the most popular package holiday destination for families, Tenerife leads the field for the second year running, according to TravelSupermarket data. The largest Canary Island is a firm favourite, thanks to its pretty beaches, almostguaranteed sunshine and affordable family accommodation. The data appears as the price of package holidays dives this year, because of delays in booking trips. It’s also not surprising that the Brits are trying to save money

wherever possible, as the pound is now the worst it has been against the euro since the single currency’s 1999 launch. Meanwhile, it is 50 years since the pound was worth less than the current 1.24 US dollars exchange rate you can get now. Emma Coulthurst, from the comparison website, said: “There have been price drops on package holidays of as much as 38% this year, compared with the last summer’s cost if you’d been booking a package holiday then.” She added: “Brexit has raised concerns and seen people delay booking. As a result, demand has dropped and prices have followed.” Turkey, Majorca and the Algarve also rank highly with holiday-makers, who receive bang for their buck, with a huge number of resorts for families offering a variety of budgets. TravelSupermarket, while ascertaining the most popular package holidays, compared searches made by tourists for hundreds of thousands of holidays, across more than 25 different package-holiday providers. The searches were made on the site between 1st January to 18th July this year, for

holidays departing between 1st May and 30th September, compared with the same dates last year. It found that Spain was a clear favourite, as the Costa Dorada saw the biggest increase in interest, rising from 16th place last year to eighth this summer. Nearby Portugal is also of interest, with the sunny Algarve jumping from fourth last summer to third place this year. Turkish resorts in the area of Antalya, including Kalkan, Lara and Alanya, have risen from seventh place last year to fourth, which is unsurprising, given the strength of the lira against the pound. Emma added: “Britons get a lot of lira in Turkey, which offers some of market’s largest range and best value, all-inclusive holidays. Meanwhile, Britons are shunning more expensive locations including Menorca, Ibiza, Dubai and Orlando. The Spanish destinations of Ibiza and Menorca feature in the top 20 mostexpensive destinations for a package holiday from the UK this summer, according to TravelSupermarket’s pricing research, highlighting why they are less popular this year.

Italian drugs mastermind captured in Gran Canaria

NATIONAL Police in Ceuta, the tiny Spanish territory just 18 miles across the water from Gibraltar in North Africa, have arrested six people, accused of assaulting, threatening and robbing young migrants, who survive in the port area or sleep in hostels. Three adults arrested were detained, while the other three, all under 18, were summoned by the Prosecutor’s Office for Minors. Commissioner Andres Martin Garrido, Chief of Police, said: “We are in the process of investigating whether they have participated in the events, of the last month, of which we are aware. “There have been five or six incidents where threats, assaults and robberies with violence were made on minors, living in the port or immigrants centre.” The police are checking to see whether the cases are linked, but they do not believe these were hate crimes.

Brit, 87, dies while hiking

AN 87-YEAR-OLD British man has died while hiking in a nature reserve near Cartagena. Emergency services said the man, unnamed, was found unconscious in the sea by other walkers in his group. He had become lost near the Cala del Barco cove, in the Calblanque Natural Park, and was thought to have fallen. Medical personnel attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful, and Guardia Civil officers have since launched an investigation into the pensioner’s death, which remains open.

Rescue helicopter kept busy

TWO sailors were thrown in the sea at Denia, on the Costa Blanca, after their boats collided at around midnight. A crew member from each boat fell in and disappeared, which caused huge concern for the Maritime Rescue helicopter. But the pilot tracked the coast and eventually found one of them, who had been able to swim ashore. The other man, who had a fractured leg, was found by police officers and taken to hospital. On the same night, in Javea, four people were rescued after their boat drifted into the rocks in the Cala dell Francès. The rescue helicopter had to lift all four to safety because the pilot had no way to reach them by boat. But no one was injured, and the boat has been lodged in the bay until it can be safely removed.

AN Italian drug-smuggler, wanted by his own national authorities for his role in a trans-national criminal organisation, has been arrested in Gran Canaria’s resort town of Maspalomas, the Spanish National Police said in a statement on Thursday.

The Italian national, said to have trafficked notoriously “poor quality” cocaine to Malta and elsewhere, remained unnamed by the Spanish authorities. But he was reported to be one of the organisation’s most active members. In addition to the previous narcotics-trafficking, for which he was wanted, the organisation he was leading, was, according to the National Police: “Assembling the necessary infrastructure to distribute drugs throughout Europe, mainly through the Netherlands, Spain and Malta.”

The Spanish officers said his organisation, formed by people close to a wellknown Italian mafia clan, had prepared shipments of packages of coffee beans, with the cocaine hidden inside. The Mafia clan, mentioned but not named by the National Police, is the Laudani Clan of Catania. In making the arrest last week, the Spanish police said they had been following a request from the Italian authorities, who were keen to locate one of the most active members of a criminal organisation, related to drug-trafficking. In Spain, who had evaded arrest in Italy. The Spanish police detailed how the Italian authorities, back in 2017, had created a plan to stake out the multinational drug deliveries, which, they said, allowed them to discover who were the true recipients of the shipments, along with their connections with South America, Germany, Holland and Malta. They added: “Also, as explained by the Italian

judicial authorities, the suspect maintained direct relations with the suppliers in South America, a dangerous organisation which, in addition, distributed cocaine of poor quality.” The arrest formed part of a Guardia Di Finanza di Messina (Sicily) anti-Mafia operation, carried out simultaneously in Italy, Spain and South America. Eleven people were arrested, last month, in Italy, as part of a crackdown on the branch of the lucrative cocaine trade between South America and Sicily, in the words of the Guardia di Finanza di Messina. The 2017 operation was initiated after around 1kg of cocaine had been found at Rome’s Ciampino Airport. Italian judicial investigations revealed that the consignment was not a one-off, but, rather, part of a broader, structured operation, said the Italian authorities, operating in eastern Sicily with branches in Germany, Holland and Malta, as well as in South America.

Sunbed conmen are hit by Adeje police

Tourists flee water park, in billowing black smoke

TOURISTS were filmed running for their lives last Monday, after a fire engulfed the Aqualand water park, in Gran Canaria’s Maspalomas.

TWO conmen, charging four euros per sunbed and umbrella for people on Callao Salvaje’s Ajabo beach, were caught by Adeje’s Local Police at least twice last month. According to reports by

officers, the scammers, offering tickets to unsuspecting sunbathers, said they were acting on behalf of workers linked to a local café. But its concession for providing service had been

That made it easy for officers, who traced the stolen steel, to arrest the suspect, and are now awaiting his appearance before the judge, for sentencing.

Families were seen covering their faces as they jumped into taxis, fleeing the billowing black smoke. It was evacuated at around 5.30pm, when a blaze erupted at the derelict La Perla restaurant building. A fire-fighting spokesperson said that a build-up of rubbish at the building, near warehouses, was the likely cause.

One man was treated for minor burns, but none of the revellers evacuated from Aqualand was injured. An emergency spokesperson added: “Fire-fighters are still at the scene, but they have indicated that the blaze is under control. They are continuing to work on putting it out, together with the rest of the emergency services.” The noise of blasts was also reported by some visitors, but these were thought to be gas canisters, exploding at the former restaurant. One Aqualand tourist, Jorge Rodriguez, said: “We were able to leave very quickly, thanks to the technical and personnel team.”

Missing-person puzzles Man scammed €160,000 are not always resolved from family and friends

A MAN has been arrested by National Police in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, accused of defrauding family and friends of more than 160,000 euros. MORE than 11,490 people from Spain were reported missing during the first five months of the year, averaging 76 a day.

Figures supplied by the National Centre of Missing Persons (CND) also reveal that an astonishing 2,163 “missing people” cases are still active. The Missing Persons and Unidentified Human Remains (PDyRH) organisation is aware of 187,554 cases being

reported since the system was introduced in 2010. More than 55% of those were resolved within 72 hours of a missing report, and 11.7% were sorted after more than 30 days. Some 13,447 cases are still active from the 187,554 total. Nearly 12,000 of those still missing are men, with more than 1,362 women, and the gender of 104 unknown. Almost four in every five cases feature children aged between 13 and 17.

The 29-year-old man had asked them for money, time and again, to take part in a lucrative business, which would generate great benefits for all of them. But the so-called business proved to be fictitious. The conman also falsified the victims’ identities, stole bank codes, made transfers and contracted loans in several entities, on behalf of the other parties, without their consent, all adding up to in excess of 160,000 euros. The events were triggered by allegations filed by several people, who told police officers that they had been victims of a scam, perpetrated by a relative. They told officers that since November

last year, a family member had asked them for financial help, having created a company which would bring great rewards for them. It was not until July that several people realised that in the last months, they had, seemingly, made numerous bank transfers and contracted several loans in different banking entities. But they were all made without their consent. That triggered an investigation by police officers, in which it was possible to verify the identity of the perpetrator’s identity. The police, who had all the documentation provided by the injured parties, were able to determine that the alleged conman had used false identities to get the bank codes, make bank transfers and take out loans, costing the defrauded people a total of more than 160,000 euros. The detained suspect was placed at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority.

Ryanair staff looking at huge redundancies

RYANAIR staff have been told to prepare for job losses, following billionaire boss Michael O’Leary’s warning that the Irish airline had 900 more pilots and cabin-crew than needed. Redundancies will be announced by the end of the month, he said, in a video message to workers, blaming the company’s falling profits on the grounding of its Boeing 737 Max fleet, higher oil prices, and Brexit uncertainty. The 737 Max was grounded over software concerns, following two deadly crashes, and O’Leary added: “It’s been a challenging summer, and we’re facing a difficult winter.

“I’m sorry to advise you that this means we need to cut our aircraft numbers and our staffing, not just for summer 2020, but also this winter. “This will result in some base cuts, some base closures, and, I’m very sorry to say, some job losses this winter for pilots and cabin crew, at the end of our summer schedule in September and October, and, also, some immediately after Christmas.” This has had a big impact on the budget airline’s profits, according to O’Leary. He also blamed the increasing likelihood of a no-deal Brexit in just 12 weeks. But the 54-year-old pledged that his airline, which is in talks with unions, would do all it could to minimise the job losses.

Shoplifters nabbed by sharp security guards

SECURITY guards at an Adeje shopping centre caught three people with clothes, believed to have been stolen from various stores, as they attempted to get in their vehicle in the car park. National Police officers, who were notified, arrived promptly and found many clothes and accessories in bags inside the vehicle, all collected by two women, aged 25 and 30, both with police records, and a 45-year-old man. According to the clothes’ labels, identifying the origin and sale price, the police estimated that more than 10 shopping centre stores were probably robbed of goods, with a total value of €2,550 euros. The trio, who had no receipts to back up the clothes, were arrested and transferred to the police station, following complaints from the companies affected, who will have the goods returned.

Holiday pal to blame for death of Bronson’s wife? A MAN who “motorboated” Paula Williamson at her Tenerife villa, fears their flirty holiday antics led to her downward spiral, after she was found dead from a suspected drug overdose.

Connor Boyes, 27, was snapped with his face in Charles Bronson’s wife’s boobs, known as motorboating, a year ago, after she dared him to have a go. The former Corrie actress, 38, invited a six-strong group of “lads” back to her Tenerife villa, and later laughed off her antics, saying she was just a “flirt”. But the pictures led to Britain’s most notorious lag, Bronson, filing for divorce, 16 months after they wed at HMP Wakefield, and he branded Paula a “drunken tart”. Connor now fears he may have been partly responsible for Paula’s death, after her lifeless body was discovered last Monday (29th July) “on top of a bed

of cocaine and tablets”. He told The Sun Online: “I fear what happened with us led to a downward spiral. I’m worried that my friends and I were the catalyst for her passing away, as it was one thing after another when she got divorced from Charles. “Even if it weren’t, me directly, there could have been a domino effect, after what happened in Tenerife. We thought it was just lads on holiday having a laugh, but never thought of the consequences.” Paula bumped into the blokes

on a night out in Tenerife last July and flirted outrageously with them, before inviting all six back to her villa. Connor had lunged in when Paula tugged down her top to reveal her bra, even though she told him she was the wife of Charles Bronson. She later took to social media to say it was simply “banter and having a laugh”, adding: “Charlie would be surprised if I didn’t. He knows I’m a flirt and loves me for it.” But in a letter from his cell, he criticised her and said

Connor Boyes was a “brave man”. He also made a chilling prediction that she would be dead in two years if she didn’t sort herself out. Paula, who played a nurse in a few episodes of Coronation Street, from 2008 to 2012, checked into rehab last year after admitting she had tried to take her own life with an overdose. Connor said: “Whether it was just 1% or 50%, the situation was definitely a factor of her downfall over the year, and I worry that the Tenerife pictures were the start of the spiral. “Me and my mates are all in shock, and feel a responsibility that we could have contributed to her death.” Paula was found dead from a suspected drug overdose, just hours after it was revealed that Bronson wanted to wed again. It came just hours after Bronson, 66, announced that he wanted to marry a pensioner called “Joan” when he is freed. He said: “There’s not a 33-year-old bird out there who’s fit to clean her shoes.”

Hello, there’s a cow in your swimming pool!

LOCAL Police in a Greater Madrid region town had to rescue a cow, who had fallen into a swimming pool and been there for over 24 hours, with the owners completely unaware.

Irene Larroque said she and her mother had left the house in Camorritos, which they use as a weekend retreat, last Saturday night, and received a call from the police on Monday morning. “They said, ‘there’s a cow in your swimming pool’,” added Irene, who believed the call to be a hoax at first. “We immediately alerted someone we knew who lives nearby, and who sent a photograph, confirming it was true,” she said. The cow’s owner had reported her missing two days earlier, after she broke

out of her field. She had gone searching for water in the hot weather, and fallen into the pool while drinking from it. She had been in the water since Sunday morning, and, naturally, she had made a mess of the pool, since she had been unable to avoid answering the call of nature … in both formats, in those 24 hours! But the bewildered animal was in good health, and, apparently, unscathed by her ordeal. A crane, specially designed for rescuing large animals, was brought in, and the cow, after being checked over, was released back into the mountain pasture where she lives, to join the rest of her herd. The farmer’s public liability insurance company has been notified, so it will cover the costs of draining, cleaning and refilling the swimming pool, as well as the fee for hiring the crane.

Benidorm’s Mateo a tonic on charity day for animals

Jake Canuso, alias Mateo, with Linda Jean, who runs the animal charity

JAKE Canuso, who plays much-loved Spanish barman Mateo in the hit TV series Benidorm, gave his support to the Show Boat pub’s Charity Day in Benidorm last Friday. And his appearance almost

certainly helped raise funds to boost the “For the love of dogs and cats” sanctuary. Linda Jean, who runs the animal sanctuary and its re-homing scheme, singlehandedly, will be known to many Benidorm locals for the fantastic work she does, as well as appearing as one of the local stars from television’s “Bargain Hunting Brits in the Sun” programme.

The day featured many of Benidorm’s top acts, who all gave up their time for free. A delighted Linda Jean said: “What an absolutely wonderful day we’ve had. We raised €4,100 for the animals, and a lot of this came from Jake, for his auctions, and the photos he had taken with people, which brought in nearly €1,000.”

Just 11 fugitives still on the run after 84 captured

Suspected murderers, sex offenders and drugs traffickers are among just 11 fugitives left on the run in a campaign that has seen 84 offenders already caught across Europe.

Today, the National Crime Agency and the charity Crimestoppers are urging the public to help us catch the last fugitives who have escaped justice. All of them have connections to Spain but may have moved around over the years and will be using false identities. We are re-releasing their details as millions of Brits are enjoying their summer holidays abroad. “As my fellow Britons know, the success of Crimestoppers, whether in the UK or Spain, is all about the active support of ordinary people for the work of the police, so I would like to appeal to British residents and holidaymakers in Spain to be on the lookout this summer for these 11 fugitives from British justice. Your information, given anonymously, can put these criminals back where they belong: behind bars in the UK,” said British Ambassador to Spain Simon Manley. The 11 include Sarah Panitzke. Panitzke, 45, from Fulford, near York, is wanted by HMRC and is accused of laundering approximately £1bn for a crime group involved in VAT fraud. To carry out the alleged

frauds, she travelled extensively to places including Dubai, Spain and Andorra. She absconded in May 2013 before her trial finished. Panitzke has a Yorkshire accent and is about 5ft 5in tall. Eighteen members of her crime group received sentences totalling 135 years. Also on the list is alleged murderer Allan Foster, 43, who has been on the run since May 2006 when David Rice was shot dead as he sat in his car in South Shields, Tyne and Wear. The NCA works closely with Crimestoppers, the Spanish authorities, UK law enforcement agencies and the British Embassy in Madrid as part of the Operation Captura campaign. We have seen 84 fugitives returned to the UK out of 96 publicised cases. One case has been dropped. In June, Christopher Guest More Jr, 41, became the latest fugitive to be arrested and returned to the UK after being on the run for 16 years. Andy Cooke-Welling, of the NCA’s International Crime Bureau, said: “Operation Captura has been a resounding success. “But we are still hunting the remaining fugitives on our list and will not stop. “We urge holidaymakers and expats in Spain and elsewhere across Europe to keep their eyes and ears open this summer. “There may also be people in the UK with vital information on their whereabouts, and we would urge them to get

in touch. Having the public’s attention focused on them makes it so much harder to hide.” Mark Hallas, Chief Executive at Crimestoppers charity, said: “Members of the public are one of our greatest weapons in the fight against crime. Once again we are asking the public to help track down most wanted individuals who are sought in connection with some violent, sexual and highly organised crimes. “We’ve always had an overwhelming response to this campaign, to date 84 offenders have been caught across Europe. “You can view all the appeals on the most wanted section of Crimestoppers website and if you know anything about the individuals please contact the Crimestoppers charity. “No one will ever know who you are, not even us.” Anyone with information about the whereabouts of a fugitive should can contact Crimestoppers 100% anonymously at crimestoppers-uk.org or call 0800 555 111. If sighted, the public are advised not to approach any of the fugitives but to contact the police immediately. Dropped case details: At the request of the Crown Prosecution Service, Daniel Bowes, who was wanted by the Met Police, has been removed from the list and his European Arrest Warrant will be withdrawn. Joint forces to halt replica guns from being converted

SPAIN’S National Police have joined forces with the British National Crime Agency (NCA), in an international operation against importing replica firearms, and their subsequent conversion into weapons with real firing capacity. A specialised police probe, resulting in 27 arrests and 100 weapons being seized, has been carried out in various UK cities. This operation is the starting point of the fight against arms-trafficking, which caters to terrorism and organised crime, as well as the sale and acquisition of so-called detonating weapons, which is banned in the UK. This should spark the withdrawal of Europe’s black market for illegal arms sales. An operation, in line with the new criminal stance in the UK, in which more than 40% of firearms were recovered between 2016 and 2017, involves deactivating weapons manufactured abroad, reconverted, modified or reactivated. Spanish police have integrated in Birmingham,

where a co-ordination centre has been set up to concentrate on joint actions, and the subsequent results. Specialised investigators from the National Police General Information Commission were added to this centre to co-ordinate the investigative links and information, revealed during the development of the operation, with a connection to Spain. The exchange of information between the lawmen of both countries made it possible for the National Police to provide relevant information and analysis on different armouries in Spain, some of them distributing the UK’s detonating weapons. These weapons, modified to produce real fire, have been used in violent crimes, including homicides. Some of those arrested have criminal records for robbery with weapons, or their illegal possession. And one of them is an Englishman. He has recently displayed an extremely radical and violent religious profile, causing the British authorities to focus their investigations on him. Arrests have been made in London, Manchester, Cambridge, Glasgow, Newcastle, Oxford, Belfast and Bristol, among others.

Mum’s holiday ruined by ‘Angry Birds’ eyebrows

A BEWILDERED mum said her £3,000 Tenerife holiday was in tatters, even before she even left the UK. Colline Rees, 37, went to get her eyebrows done, but the end result left her too embarrassed to pose for family photos.

Colline said: “I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. All my close friends and family were saying I looked like something out of the Angry Birds game. “We had been really looking forward to it because we usually went on holiday in Wales. We were so excited to be able to fly somewhere

new. But if someone else looked like that, you’d do a double take. “I was devastated, and it stopped me from enjoying the holiday. I tried my best for the children to put on a brave face, but I had to sit back and let everyone else have fun without me.” Another beautician tried to fix the problem by drawing the black eyebrows on, and a trainee waxed her eyebrows, but didn’t do a very good job. Colline gets her eyebrows done, regularly, in her home town of Llanelli, South Wales. She suffered from alopecia as a teenager and is still affected by it now, her hair growing back slower than normal. She has an eyebrow wax to boost her confidence, but

when she went to the salon, her normal beautician was too busy, so a trainee did them. But then the mum saw herself in the mirror. “I was mortified, absolutely horrified,” she recalled. “I said to the girl, ‘are you kidding me? is this a joke?’.” Colline, who said the worker apologised that she had messed up, added: “I was hysterical, crying, ‘Is anyone going to fix this’?” Another beautician stepped in and said a bit of tint would help, but the second attempt left her feeling as though she’d had two slugs drawn above her eyes. She tried to wipe the black dye off, but it was too late, and it took nine months for Colline’s eyebrows to grow back.

TWO Portuguese men were arrested on an international arrest warrant, having been found living in a caravan in Alicante. The men had previously been sentenced to 15 years in prison in Portugal for false imprisonment and human-trafficking, after they had, allegedly, taken advantage of a person

with a mental illness. The victim, unemployed and homeless, was given an opportunity to work for the men as a street vendor of balloons and toys at fairs and festivals. He accepted the work and moved to Alicante city, where, according to the sentence: “The victim lived in conditions of slavery,

without receiving any salary for his work, without the possibility of having a telephone, subsisting in degrading conditions and without any type of hygiene.” When the victim refused to continue working, he reportedly received death threats, and was physically attacked.

Smart tops stay clean …and have no creases

A “SMART clothing” creator, with a €600,000 annual turnover, is seeking sponsorship to expand the business, after inventing a collection which simply does not crease, and which also repels dirt.

Sepiia, a label designed by Federico Sainz Robles, includes shirts and polo shirts for men and women, and he is likely to expand the range if finance is forthcoming. In the first year, the company invested €108,000 in the project, and reported a €300,000 turnover, and, thanks to a cash injection of €192,000, it doubled that sum. Sainz Robles said: “The material used to make the shirts is similar to the skin on a peach, a lotus flower, or a very fine, fur-like texture, but it’s microscopic, so this is not obvious to the naked eye.” As a result, any fluids which land on it do not expand but remain on the surface, or on the tip of the tiny strands of “hair”, and can be brushed off, once dry.

This fabric does not need ironing, does not “store” odour or accumulate sweat marks, and is elastic and breathable. It means the items will seldom need washing and will remain clean, smooth and hygienic, even after several wears. The buttons are made from recycled cotton, and the packaging is completely recycled, unlike cheaper “fast fashion” which comes at a much lower price but does not last very long. The fabric requires less use of electricity and water, meaning that its carbon footprint and environmental impact is 70% lower than the average shirt or top. The men’s shirts and T-shirts cost €84, and women’s, €79, and, said Sainz Robles, an

engineering graduate who went on to study fashion design: “The problem with budget clothing is that it has a hidden cost. “But our goods are all manufactured in Spain, using highly-technical materials and sustainable processes, hence the price. And they will last for years.” Sepiia even has a website, which breaks down the costs involved in production, so customers can see how much is profit and how much contributes to expenses. And no charge is made for national delivery, irrespective of the order’s weight. The company began in 2016, and Sainz Robles, who has eight full-time employees, is trying to drum up financial support, to the tune of €400,000, to expand the business. He was able to turn his idea into a company, thanks to various entities supporting brand-new traders, including Google for Start-ups, the La Nave scheme, run by Madrid City Council, and the Lanzadera (‘Launcher’) project, operated by Juan Roig, owner and founder of national supermarket chain Mercadona.

Rogue drones will be hunted by police now

A NEW security system to hunt down rogue drones, with an AI vessel which detects those which have crossed into restricted air space, or those committing an air-traffic violation, has been launched by Madrid’s National Police. The AI, developed especially for this service, is a product of Spanish tech company ASDT, which specialises in location hardware. The technology is able to pinpoint the exact location of a drone pilot, enabling police to apprehend the

individual. Police claim that any drone, flying over 450 metres high in the air, poses a significant risk to other airborne aircrafts and should, therefore, be treated as a high-risk case. They have put in place several new regulations to which drone pilots must adhere, when flying theirs close to certain airspaces. If they don’t, the pilots run the risk of a €6,000 fine. In fact, a man was recently charged with flying his drone over Barajas Airport.

SPAIN’S High Court has launched a formal investigation into corruption at BBVA, the country’s secondlargest bank.

The probe follows a request by the anti-corruption public prosecutor, which will see the lender investigated on charges of bribery and corruption. These charges date back to 2004, relating to the company’s dealings with former police chief Jose Manuel Villarejo. BBVA executive chairman Carlos Torres said: “I am committed to clarifying the facts, and complying with the law. We will continue to collaborate, actively, with the judicial system.” The judge presiding over the case has expanded the investigation to eight former and current BBVA employees, but none is believed to belong to the bank’s current board. Villarejo is alleged to have run a lucrative business on the side for years, selling sensitive information to wealthy clients as leverage against their rivals and enemies. He is said to have had a network of “moles” working for him at banks, telecommunications companies and even the Tax Agency, whose employees

Although he has been in pre-trial custody since November 2017, Villarejo is

2nd August 2019 - 8th August 2019 thought to have ordered a trickle of recent leaks to the media, all of which have caused embarrassment to several high-profile individuals, including former Spanish King Juan Carlos I, and Justice Minister Dolores Delgado. Prosecutors, in their written request to the judge, said: “BBVA hired and made illicit payments to a company named Cenyt, whose owner was Villarejo, affecting several sensitive areas of the bank, and various executives, for a prolonged period of time.” Prosecutors want to investigate whether BBVA hired Cenyt to spy on individuals, with the goal of obtaining information about Sacyr, the construction giant which tried to push away former chairman Francisco González in 2004 and 2005. Villarejo worked informally for the bank for 13 years, between 2004 and 2017, during which time he earned around €10m. Prosecutors have reached these conclusions after analysing paper and digital documents seized from Villarejo in November 2017, as well as material contributed by BBVA. While there are no prison terms for legal entities, an unfavourable verdict could carry hefty financial penalties.

Abusive Egyptian consul is protected by immunity

THE second-highest ranking officer of the Egyptian Embassy has been detained in Madrid, for, allegedly, abusing his wife and daughter.

But his diplomatic immunity has protected him from any further legal action. The accused consul, referred to by police as Tarek A, was transferred to an interrogation unit to confirm his identity. However, the authorities were told that as soon as his position was confirmed, he must be released, pending no further investigation.

The gender-abuse victim was made aware of her right to police protection. And, at first, she told officers that she would press charges. According to official sources, however, Egyptian Embassy representatives arrived at the scene of the “crime” to convince her against making allegations. Diplomats, who hail from countries outside the jurisdiction of the country where they are staying, temporarily, are protected under article 31 of the Vienna Convention. It explains that any foreign emissary in this situation is exempt from all legal ramifications for any contravening action, without exceptions.

Highest-earning firms Mercadona down to second as Repsol revs up to the top FUEL giant Repsol has overtaken supermarket chain Mercadona as the company with the highest turnover by Spanish province, the former reporting 2018 figures of €22.3bn and the latter a tad less, with €22.2bn.

These enormous sums have been provided by Business Insider, which reveals that Mercadona has the highest turnover in the province of Valencia, while Repsol, in that of Madrid. Business Insider has created a map, showing which company in each province is the largest in terms of annual profit. Naturally, for A Coruña (Galicia), this is Inditex, the high-street clothing chain founded by Europe’s richest man, Amancio Ortega, whose most international brand is Zara. It is one of just two clothing manufacturers on the list, the other being Essity, in the province of Tarragona (Catalunya). The majority of firms with the greatest pre-tax profits in their provinces are in the industries of manufacturing, including motor transport, energy, pharmaceutical and food or agricultural. Motoring firms, ranked No.1 for turnover in their provinces are Opel (Zaragoza, Aragón), Seat (Barcelona), Rénault (Valladolid), Volkswagen (Navarra), and Peugeot Citroën (Pontevedra, Galicia). In transport, the highestearning company in the province of Alicante is Baleària ferries, while for the Balearic Islands, it is Air Europa. Airbus Helicopters has the largest turnover in the Al-

bacete, Castilla-La Mancha province; Benteler Ibérica automotion in Burgos, Castilla y León; Conway logistics, in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha; Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles rail engineering in Guipúzcoa, in the Basque Country; pre-paid transport card company Valcarce Tarjeta Transporte, in León; and the motorway toll firm Iberpistas in Segovia, Castilla y León. Energy and fuel, traditional and renewable, are the biggest businesses in Madrid; in the Basque province of Vizcaya, where the capital is Bilbao and where electricity board Iberdrola earns the most; Sevilla, where electricity distributor Endesa is the

largest earner; the island and wider province of Tenerife, whose power supplier Disa has the highest turnover; the Las Palmas province, where the top earner is the Unión Eléctrica de Canarias; Cantabria, whose firm with the greatest turnover is Viesgo Generación, also an electricity company; and Ciudad Real, CastillaLa Mancha, whose topearning company is Vestas Manufacturing, which makes wind-farm turbines. Manufacturing and wholesale of raw materials for construction are also some of the industries with the highest pre-tax profits: Vidrala (glass) in Álava, in the Basque Country;

Cosentino (stone) in Almería; AG Siderúrgica Balboa in Badajoz, in Extremadura and Arcelor Mittal in Asturias (iron and steel); Acerinox Europa in Cádiz (steel); Pamesa Cerámica (tiles) in Castellón; Cunext Copper Industries (copper wire) in Córdoba, Andalucía; and Atlantic Copper in Huelva, Andalucía. Food and agriculture feature heavily on the map, in addition to Mercadona in Valencia: Incarlopsa in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha and Guissona Corporación Alimentaria in Lleida, Catalunya (both meat); General Markets Food in Girona, Catalunya; Cidacos preserves in La Rioja; Lactalis in Lugo, Galicia and Schreiber Foods in Toledo, Castilla-La Mancha (dairy); Dcoop foods in Málaga; and Coren in Ourense, Galicia, plus Bernabé Campal in Salamanca, Cabadu in Zamora and Copiso in Soria, Castilla y León (agriculture).

Animal feed, a variation on this theme, represents the top-earning companies in Ávila, Castilla y León (Alta Moraña) and Huesca, Aragón (Piensos Fraga). Pharmaceutical companies appear twice: Granada’s Bidafarma Group, and Hefame, in Murcia. In Spain’s two autonomouslygoverned city-provinces on the northern Moroccan coast, Ceuta and Melilla, the firms with the highest turnovers are in the betting industry: Luckia Games in the former and Codere in the latter. Companies with the greatest pre-tax profits, which do not fall into any of the above main categories, are Beyos y Ponga estate agency and property developers in Cáceres, Extremadura; lighting firm Valeo in Jaén, Andalucía; and biotechnology company Fertinagro Biotech in Teruel, Aragón.

The victim told officers that he’d received a call from a neighbour, asking him to visit her because she had just

set upon by the trio, who beat him, walloped him with a chain and snatched his mobile. He told the Guardia that he knew his attackers and said he had been ambushed. An investigation by officers revealed that the neighbour was still in prison, and arrested the trio, aged 35, 24 and 19, respectively.

The pound strengthened, initially, in response to the end of the Conservative Party leadership contest, but gains proved very shortlived. Sterling has even fallen against the euro, despite poor domestic data, and the prospect of a rate cut from the ECB. GBP/EUR continues to test lows of 1.10, with EUR/ GBP at 0.90. FORMER Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has again failed to gain enough votes to be invested as head of his country again.

His disappointment came after the Podemos party, and its United Left associates, opted to abstain, along with the Catalunya Left Republicans (ERC), Valencia regional party Compromís, and Basque reunification party EH-Bildu. Sánchez’s socialist (PSOE) party had rejected a final offer from left-wing Podemos in the cross-party negotiations, which had included a Deputy President and taking control of the Work Ministry. It also had Podemos in charge of increases to the minimum wage, previously agreed as €1,200 a month before the next elections, in May 2023, and abolishing the former right-wing government’s labour reform. Podemos also wanted to head up a ministry for social rights and equality, including handling issues such as preschool education, carers and dependants, gender equality and related financial issues such as the gender pay gap, maternity and paternity leave, and the Law of Historic Memory.

Boris Johnson government heightens No-Deal Brexit fears, and GBP falls

USD lingers around 1.11. What’s been happening? The past couple of weeks have seen Britain’s Conservative Party leadership contest come to an end, and Boris Johnson become Britain’s new Prime Minister. Following weeks of political uncertainty, the news gave the pound a brief lift, before Johnson’s hard-line-Brexit stance sent the currency tumbling. Fears of how a no-deal Brexit could negatively impact Britain’s economy, in the longterm, continue dominating sterling movement. The European Central Bank (ECB) wasn’t as dovish as expected in its July policy decision, which piled further pressure on GBP/EUR. Meanwhile, some strong US data, as well as signs that dovish Fed bets had been overdone, have left the US dollar recovering. What do you need to look out for? With the new UK government in power, and the clock ticking on the current Brexit deadline of October 31st, the Brexit process will keep driving GBP

movement. Unless the odds of a no-deal Brexit retreat, the pound may remain on the back foot. In terms of economic news, the Bank of England (BoE) delivered its UK policy decision yesterday (Thursday), and UK growth data will come in next week. Any positive news could lend sterling support. The euro and US dollar, on the other hand, are much more likely to be driven by

data. Major Eurozone data, including inflation, growth and PMIs, will be published over the next fortnight. US PMI data, due over the coming fortnight, could also influence Federal Reserve interest rate cut bets, and US dollar movement. Sánchez had offered three ministries and a deputy presidency, one of the former being housing, which Podemos was willing to cede in exchange for the Ministry of Work, but the PSOE did not want to hand this one over. Podemos, finally, offered to relinquish its claim over that ministry, in exchange for active employment policies, but this was not accepted, either. Both parties ended by saying the other was not willing to negotiate. With Podemos and United Left opting to abstain in the second round, in which Sánchez did not need an outright majority of “yes” votes but merely more “yes” than “no” votes, he lost his presidential bid by 31 MPs. True, Sánchez has failed again, but he will have another chance in two months, or by 23rd September at the latest. But if he fails to be invested after a second round in September, he will have to call a fresh general election, which would fall on 10th November. Pablo Iglesias said recently that if Sánchez opted to call a second election, he would never become President because Spaniards were starting to suffer election fatigue, and wanted stability.

This special programme showcases the inspiring behind-the-scenes stories of amateur participants raising money for good causes, in an event which sees 100,000 cyclists take advantage of London’s traffic-free roads. Courses range from an eight-mile route for families to the 100-mile challenge on the same roads as the professional cyclists.

Waxed Jackets. Gregg Wallace is in South Shields at a clothing factory where they produce 650 waxed jackets a day. He follows the production of water-resistant jackets from the arrival of 500-metre-long rolls of undyed cotton through to dispatch. Along the way he sees the fabric dipped into baths of wax heated to 95 degrees Celsius and learns how a 23-piece pattern is used to create a complex 3D jacket jigsaw. Meanwhile Cherry Healey is learning about the science of staying dry. She finds that it’s easy enough to waterproof a fabric by coating it in a nonpermeable coating. But while this stops water getting in, it also stops sweat getting out. The key to comfortable rain resistance is a breathable membrane which contains microscopic holes, big enough to allow steam to escape, but too small to let rain drops in. Cherry also visits an umbrella factory where manufacturing methods have barely changed in 150 years. She helps transform a simple wooden stick into a top-notch canopy, using saws, pliers and needle and thread. Historian Ruth Goodman is investigating the fishy origin of waxed jackets. She visits a remote Scottish harbour and learns how these weatherproof coats were born out of oil-covered sail cloth which seamen adapted into garments to keep out the worst of the weather. She also visits Edinburgh and learns how an English King played a key role in the popularity of that favourite Scottish fabric, tartan.

Speed Freaks “Land speed racing is my game, and as fast as possible is the goal.” - Zef Eisenberg, presenter This new documentary series for ITV4 follows Zef Eisenberg, a man whose endless pursuit of speed has taken him to the brink and back. A legend in the world of ultra-fast bikes and land speed records, he has achieved more than 40 records. Now in this six-part series he has his sights set on a feat some claim is impossible - to drive a car at 200mph on the iconic Pendine Sands in Wales. To help him, the presenter and entrepreneur has assembled a team of fellow Speed Freaks who will push cars to the limits of performance in a bid to achieve this historic record. Achieving high speeds on sand poses a unique set of challenges, so Zef is going to have to take on the laws of physics to find new ways of going faster. To demonstrate how this works, he sets the Speed Freaks team - Simon, Tessa and Martin - their first mission, souping up a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee by putting the hefty 5L V8 machine on an extreme diet, to explore the impact of power to weight on acceleration.

Serengeti

It’s time to close another chapter in the lives of the animals of the Serengeti, the end of an extraordinary year for them all. All around is a blackened smoking wasteland, the aftermath of the huge fire: which of the families made it out alive, and who is still missing? As torrential rain quenches the scorched earth, the land is reborn into a green paradise. The changes in the landscape are reflected in the cycle of death and rebirth, as the Serengeti’s elders prepare their young for adulthood and a life on their own. Lioness Kali is alive, but one of her three cubs is missing. Kike the cheetah returns and must train her grown up cubs to survive on their own. The short lush grasslands make the perfect training grounds for her lessons of survival. She teaches them to stalk, chase and trip their prey. A giraffe, grieving over the unexplained death of her calf, interrupts the cubs’ training regime. Leader of the wild dogs Jasari is also showing his pups how to survive on their own, but when he teaches them to fight off hyenas they too are interrupted by the grieving giraffe.

BBC2, 21.00

Episode one: Life Is A Cabaret. It’s 1966 and Bob Fosse is in Hollywood on the set of Sweet Charity, the film of the successful Broadway musical that had starred his wife Gwen Verdon, who has been replaced on screen by Shirley MacLaine. A year later and Gwen and Bob are home in New York having a party to celebrate the film’s huge box office success, with guests including their friend Paddy Cheyefsky, Neil Simon - who wrote the book for Sweet Charity - and his wife, Gwen’s very good friend Joan. Joan is adamant that Gwen should have got the film role of Sweet Charity but Gwen is just grateful that Bob was chosen to direct the film by Shirley. Bob is musing over the reviews of the film as Gwen insists that he should be coming to bed, but Bob is having suicidal thoughts of jumping from the apartment balcony. Dining with the producer Cy Feuer, Bob puts himself forward as the director of Cy’s new project Cabaret, but Cy is reluctant since he thinks of Bob’s style as brash, and explains that Cabaret is an intimate musical drama. Bob recalls his time in the US Navy in an entertainment unit, dancing for severely wounded servicemen, and insists that he is the director for this project. Cy remains reluctant and Bob says that he will call Manny Wolf at the studio (Allied Artists) to introduce himself. He subsequently pressures Wolf’s receptionist to get him an interview at which he is given the job. In Munich, Bob prepares for the filming of Cabaret, which involves visiting a brothel to cast real prostitutes as the patrons of the Kit Kat Club and using the language skills of the translator, Hannah, for the production, and subsequently seducing her. Cy is concerned that Bob is not working quickly enough and that he is likely to go over budget as his previous films have done. Gwen, in New York preparing for a play, is trying to get Bob on the phone to inform him that their daughter Nicole has been found at school with a bottle of her father’s seconal tablets. Bob, realising that he needs Gwen’s help, calls her in New York asking her to come to Munich.

Animals at Play

BBC2, 20.00

Around the planet, animals play all sorts of group game: from dolphins that play catch, to hyena games of tug-of-war. Scientists are now discovering that playing together can provide animals with all sorts of surprising benefits. This film uncovers the secrets behind group games and the astonishing benefits animals gain from them. Juvenile Atlantic spotted dolphins in the Bahamas play high-speed games of chase that help to co-ordinate their growing bodies. The adults prefer something more sophisticated - games of catch the seaweed. As well as giving their big brains a work-out, it’s thought to help the pod unite and maintain strong social bonds. For some animals, group play can lead to friendships that last a lifetime. To cope with the challenges of living in large societies, one of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzee, uses play to work out who they can trust within the troop. In a field experiment, a troop of chacma baboons is given a selection of new toys to play with. This test sheds light on an age-old question that surrounds human behaviour: are males and females biologically programmed to play in different ways, or are the differences that we see a result of social influences from parents and peers? The results are striking: the male baboons go for the active toys like the trucks, while the females go for the dolls, suggesting that there is an innate component to play. In animal species governed by a strict hierarchy, group play is the one occasion when those rigid social barriers can be broken down. Spotted hyenas live in one of the most brutal societies in the animal kingdom. New research is finding that play can offer a moment of respite for them. Scientists think it may be vitally important for the survival of the clan, uniting all of its members. In the mountains of New Zealand, scientists have noticed that with flocks of kea parrots, playful antics appear to be contagious - where one plays, the others follow. But how do they communicate their intention to play? Their secret could lie in their ‘play call’, which encourages other nearby parrots to join in with the fun and games. It can allow keas to flit from flock to flock and co-exist peacefully.

Nadiya’s Time to Eat BBC2, 20.00

This week Nadiya shares her favourite time-saving recipes to take the stress out of impressing guests. Crisp and luxurious raspberry cheesecake croissants make a brilliant breakfast to lay on for guests at the drop of a hat. A speedy satay chicken tray bake will take just ten minutes to blow your guests away. A fuss-free cheat’s trifle with creamy chia seeds, yoghurt, fresh fruit and sweet brioche oozes style and confidence, with barely any effort at all. Nadiya joins the team at Yeo Valley Farm in Somerset to see how they do their bit to meet the UK’s insatiable demand for yoghurt. In Walsall, Nadiya’s shortcut curry with spicy jackfruit and speedy naan gives a novice cook the family dinner party that she’s always dreamed of.

Fake or Fortune?

21:00.....The Hangover Part II

BBC1, 21.00

Fiona and Philip investigate what could be one of the best bargains ever seen on the programme. Could a junk shop find, bought for £1 almost 30 years ago, turn out to be by one of the masters of modern European art - Giorgio de Chirico? If it’s genuine, this £1 painting could be worth up to £50,000. Not a bad return! The painting is an unusual still life depicting fruit in a windblown landscape. It belongs to Bob Kay, who bought it from a Hampshire bric-a-brac shop called Aladdin’s Cave in the early 1990s. At the time he was working as a porter at a local auction house and had an eye for art. On the advice of Christie’s, he submitted the picture in 1995 to the de Chirico Foundation in Rome. After two years the result came back negative - while most of the committee thought it could be right, one person said it was wrong. If the team is going to overturn this decision they’ll need to find convincing new evidence. Their journey starts in Rome, where de Chirico lived for much of his life. Born in Greece, he was a revolutionary 20th century artist whose work would inspire Salvador Dali, Rene Magritte and Max Ernst, earning him the title The Father Of Surrealism. Unfortunately, with great success comes a problem: de Chirico is massively faked. In fact, he is thought to be the second most forged Italian artist of all time. Among the forgers were surrealist followers who delighted in playing games with the art world, but also professional fakers looking to make a quick buck - and even de Chirico himself. He would backdate paintings completed later in life to pretend they were painted in his youth, allowing him to sell them for much more. Fiona and Philip leave Rome with some revealing documents to start their investigation: de Chirico’s original paint recipes. These contain some highly unusual ingredients, including honey and egg. If these kitchen cupboard items are present in Bob’s painting, they’ll be one step closer to proving it’s a genuine de Chirico. Tracing the provenance is a challenge. Fiona has to explain how this painting started life in a Roman studio but ended up in a Hampshire junk shop. In an unassuming West London Flat, she tracks down letters written by de Chirico himself to a friend in Britain. These describe paintings sent to the UK as gifts and keepsakes - could our painting be among them?

Not-so-smartphone crooks are detained

Drug-smuggler Acourt lived a life of luxury… until police caught him Acourt’s life of luxury in this Barcelona block

TWO members of a thieving gang were arrested in Benidorm after being caught leaving their apartment with four suitcases of stolen smartphones.

And police soon nabbed their two colleagues in the act of more thefts at a nightclub. The group, comprising Spanish and Moroccan nationalities, were said to have targeted British tourists, out and about in Benidorm’s nightlife hotspots. National Police seized 74 mobiles from the suitcases, and, meanwhile, the arrested four have been

imprisoned, awaiting trial. Police, reportedly, opened an investigation following a high number of denuncias concerning mobile-phone thefts, while victims were distracted. Four suspects, aged 19 to 25, were identified in the operation. They were believed to have used apps to find accommodation around Alicante, to avoid registering their names at any one address. “The modus operandi suggested a prior selection of targets, because the alleged perpetrators stole only from inside bags carried by the victims,” said a police spokesperson.

Woman, 80, leaves hospital… and dies

THE body of an 80-year-old woman, who had just left the Francesc de Borja hospital, in Gandia, Valencia, and was on her way to the local shopping centre, was found by police.

She was crossing some abandoned plots to reach the centre, but the pensioner

fell over on the way. She had left the hospital at 1pm and her body was eventually discovered at 6.30pm. Local Police began their search with the use of a drone, but her body was found by officers on foot, according to Gandia Council. The woman’s body was taken to Valencia’s Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy to identify the cause of death, and her next-of-kin were notified.

JAMIE Acourt, one of five men arrested for the murder of Stephen Lawrence 25 years ago, whose charges were eventually dropped, hid from Britain’s drug police for two years in Barcelona’s swanky Diagonal Mar district, before his arrest last December. Acourt fled to Marbella from the UK in 2016, after a £4m drug bust by police, who caught a gang moving cannabis from London to the North. He then settled in Barcelona, where, before his capture, the 43-year-old rented a luxury, £2,550-a-month pad. But he and flatmate Michael Lloyd, a fellow fugitive and drug-smuggler, left it “trashed”, thanks to their carefree lifestyle of parties and pretty women. “I’d see the men coming back from shopping trips with bags of expensive clothes,” said a neighbour. “The women would often turn up in taxis, and leave after a few hours.” “When the men were arrested, the apartment was full of designer stuff. There were also protein powders and steroids, and even a safe, which they bought after they moved in. But all that was left in it were a few coins.” Another neighbour said: “The owner was mortified when he

The £720,000 flat-owner said he had to refurbish the apartment completely, because it was a filthy mess

found out who had rented it. He had no idea.” The £720,000 flat-owner, whose name was not revealed, said he had to refurbish the apartment completely, because it was a filthy mess, with rubbish strewn everywhere. Police officers, tipped off about Acourt’s fitness obsession last year, posed as bodybuilders and arrested him at a Barcelona gym. Acourt, of Bexley, South-East London, admitted conspiracy to supply cannabis and was jailed for nine years at Kingston Crown Court last December. A Spanish-based National Crime Agency officer told the Sunday People: “We came

close to catching him a few times before we did, and we linked him to another drugs case in Barcelona. He’s got contacts on the south coast of Spain.” Lloyd, 31, was given a sevenyear prison sentence at Birmingham Crown Court last November, after admitting he attempted to import cocaine into the UK. The arrests were the culmination of a 2½-year probe by a specialist Spanish team, working with the UK’s National Crime Agency. Officers in the Madrid-based “international-fugitives’ unit” have arrested more than 20 people, wanted by the UK, since the start of last year.

AN assistant head teacher has been jailed for 12 years for having sex with four teenaged girls.

Sean Aldridge, 37, also a PE teacher, got one girl pregnant after forming a relationship with her, but she later lost the baby as a result of a miscarriage. He used a burner phone, hidden in a jacket pocket in his wardrobe, to groom the girls and hide his criminal activity from his partner. He also used the codename “Jack” to hide what he was doing, and two of the girls had his number under the name “Jack Ridge”. Aldridge began grooming pupils at Warblington School, near Havant, Hampshire, in 2007, when he gave a 15-year-old girl his mobile phone number because she was having problems at home. While out walking with his partner, who was pregnant, he bumped into the girl and later messaged her saying: “You looked nice.” The relationship started off with kissing in his office, before becoming more sexual, and Prosecutor Robert Bryan said: “The victim said her first sexual encounter was ruined because he kept repeating, ‘I could go to prison for this’.” They then had sex almost

every day, “at any opportunity”, and even after

her leavers’ prom, before she became pregnant and had

a miscarriage when she was 16. After she left, he groomed another 15-year-old, again starting with text messages, which led to sex in his office and in his car, in nearby woodland. Aldridge also groomed another two girls when they were just 14. He was previously reported to police and the school, but there was insufficient evidence because he deleted the messages and told the girls to lie for him. During his time grooming the girls, he was even promoted to assistant head and Head of Safeguarding at Warblington School. But after a three-week trial, he was found guilty of 25 counts relating to sexual activity with a child. Detective Inspector Toby Elcock said: “Children attend school expecting they will be safe in the hands of staff, who

are in charge of their care. “Sean Aldridge was trusted, as a professional, to ensure their safety, but he did not. He abused this trust and groomed these young girls into engaging in a whollyinappropriate, sexual relationship with him. “He tried to silence them to guarantee his predatory behaviour was never discovered, and for some years he succeeded.” The inspector said Aldridge had such a hold on the girls, that when contacted by police in 2010 and 2012, two of them refrained from making allegations against him. He praised the “now-grown women” for finding the bravery to finally speak out, before adding: “They have reclaimed their voices, and today’s guilty verdicts are testament to their courage.”

Police clampdown on drug-trafficking gang Electrician’s shock child-porn charges

A FUGITIVE from Belgium was arrested by police at Almeria port, where he planned to board a boat bound for Morocco.

Officers identified the 22-year-old as belonging to a drug-trafficking gang, during documentation checks on passengers, disembarking and boarding at the port. Police reported that authorities in Antwerp had issued a European arrest warrant for the runaway last January. He had escaped from serving a 40-month prison sentence, and paying a €16,000 fine, for his part in a criminal network, believed to have sold more than €730,000 of narcotics between October 2016

and March 2017. When arrested, he admitted selling cocaine and heroin for a Dutch gang. He was commissioned by them to go to Gingelom, in Belgium, to hand over and supervise the sale of the drugs, and to collect the payments.

Police in Almeria and El Ejido have also discovered and arrested 10 individuals, facing European arrest warrants, so far this year, in the provincial capital, Roquetas de Mar, Huercal de Almeria and Albox. The gang members,

from Romania, Morocco, Belgium, France, Britain and Russia, were wanted for fraud, tax evasion, Social Security fraud, falsifying documents, drug-trafficking and promoting illegal immigration, as well as sexual abuse.

AN electrician, who used his job to hide videorecording devices in people’s bathrooms, has been arrested on child pornography charges. The National Police have arrested 10 people in the Seville province, including the electrician, for exchanging child pornography over the internet. Two more suspects are being probed, with charges likely to follow. The investigation began after police detected several Internet users, sharing image files and videos of child pornography. The addresses of these devices were tracked down, and home searches carried out, to great effect.

Blazing bull safe, after tumbling into riverbed A TERRIFIED bull, with horns ablaze, broke loose from its enclosure and charged into a ravine in Sagunto, near Valencia.

The poor animal’s horns were alight, as part of the “bous embolado” festival, during last Saturday’s Sagunto summer celebrations. Around 4.30pm, it was reported to have escaped during a bull-running event, while panicked festival goers looked on. The bull charged a man sitting on a fence above the Palancia river for safety, before tumbling down into the dry riverbed. A nine-hour rescue effort involved the Guardia Civil’s SEPRONA animal protection unit, Local and National Police, Forest Guards, ambulances and a vet, among other personnel. A SEPRONA officer shot the bull with a tranquiliser dart from inside a Policia Local car, and the animal was eventually rescued, but not before charging the police car. Sagunto Mayor Darío Moreno said: “One person was wounded during the struggle, and was treated immediately

without sustaining serious injuries. We wish his speedy recovery. “We had the presence of a veterinarian throughout the operation. A rapid reaction led us to a good outcome. The animal has been rescued and is safe and sound.”

Mother forced to pay ex-husband a fortune

A WOMAN has been ordered to pay her ex-husband €62,000 after failing to disclose for three years that the real father of his daughter was a man with whom she worked.

The sentence, which can be appealed, said the woman did not tell her husband when her colleague took a

paternity test, which proved positive. The husband and wife had been engaged between 2003 and 2007, when he entered a seminary, but they resumed their relationship in March 2009 and married. The couple maintained a “relationship of chastity”. Yet despite having just one “not complete, no penetration” sexual relationship, a girl was born in August 2010, between nine and 10 months later.

According to a Madrid court’s judicial report, the woman had an on-off sexual relationship with a co-worker until 2011, when she learned the true paternity of her daughter, but did not tell her husband until 2013. The Madrid Court decided that the woman should compensate her exhusband, for not having communicated the doubts about paternity at the time of knowing that she was pregnant, or later.

Motorbikers might soon have to wear gloves or face fine

35 CW

Man’s bomb scare is quickly defused

MOTORCYCLISTS and moped riders may soon be required by law to wear gloves, and they could lose extra points for not wearing a helmet.

They will also be encouraged to fit airbags, as part of the traffic authority’s draft plans for cutting down on road injuries and fatalities. Those seeking to get a moped or motorbike licence will also have to take nearly twice as many theory classes soon: 14 hours instead of the standard eight. The additional six hours will focus on risk factors, protection measures and riding techniques. Not wearing a helmet could, in the near future, involve a loss of four licence points rather than three, but bikers who take additional, approved courses on roadsafety and awareness, whether or not they have committed an offence, may be able to gain another two points. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) aims to raise awareness among bikers about how to dress for safety: knee and elbow pads, back and shoulder protectors, proper footwear, plus resilient covering for legs, as well as a jacket providing sufficient cushioning in the event of a collision. Figures from the DGT show

that since a concerted effort was made to clamp down on riders without helmets, in 2006, there has been a dramatic drop in the number who do fail to use the correct headgear. But of the 241 bikers killed on inter-urban roads last year, 10 were not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Motorcyclists make up 21% of all road-crash deaths across the board, and on all types of road and terrain: 359 last year, and 147 so far this year. The DGT wants to cut these figures down, and its Road Safety Special Measures Plan for Motorcyclists 2019-2020 includes 17 new strategies. One of these includes making it mandatory to wear gloves while riding, on pain of a possible fine, or even loss of licence points, in line with traffic laws in a handful of other European Union countries, including France. The National Association

of Two-Wheeled Industry Traders (ANESDOR) and the Mutual Motorbikers’ Association, have given their input, drawing up the 17 potential, future strategies, and both organisations stressed the importance of gloves and suitable clothing for motorcycling. They also believe the future of safe riding lies in fitting airbags to bikes, which is an accessory relatively unknown to the general public, and normally associated with cars. Both groups say their use in two-wheeled sports is growing, and is raising awareness. Also, prices are now coming down, and they are likely to continue to do so as more and more riders buy airbags. When they were first launched, airbags for bikes cost over €1,000, but they can now be found for between €300-600.

A BRITISH expat, who would not give his name, discovered a pair of mortar bombs in the basement of his villa, in Fortuna, Murcia, and reported them to the Guardia Civil.

Bomb-disposal officers were sent to the scene immediately, but they contained no explosives or detonators, which suggested they had once been

collectors’ items. The incident occurred as four more discarded ordinances were found next to a Marbella golf course, one having to be detonated in a controlled explosion. People in similar cases have been known to panic, handing the potentially-fatal devices into their nearest police station, according to the Guardia Civil. This has led the police force to issue simple instructions to the public… if you find an explosive device, don’t touch it!

Student’s driving-test trick backfires on him

Brit drug-traffickers held

TWO Brits, aged 27 and 20, have been arrested by the National Police for alleged drug-trafficking on Costa del Sol. The pair, aged 27 and 20, were busted with 12.36kg of marijuana in the boot of their car. The National Police say the pair were stopped earlier in July during a routine police traffic stop on Estepona’s Avenida Selwo. The drugs were found in two white plastic bags, and the pair are awaiting trial.

A STUDENT thought he had devised the perfect plan when trying to fool examiners with his written driving test in Segovia, near Madrid, by hiding a mobile phone beneath his shirt.

By placing its camera against a hole in his shirt, an accomplice sitting at home could see the questions, and then tell him the answers, via an unobtrusive, wireless earpiece. Unfortunately, the ruse was quickly spotted, and Guardia

Civil traffic officers were called to the test centre. As they approached him, the student made a crazy run for it. But the Guardia agents had no trouble tracing him. That’s because he had already provided his name, address and ID number to the centre, to be able take the test in the first place. Police later detained him and confiscated the offending phone. As a final indignity, Guardia Civil doctors had to be called in to remove the earphone. The student had pushed it so far down his ear canal in an effort to hide it, that it was stuck fast!

Horsegate conman held, for huge European scam

K9 Animal News

Give Raven a chance!

Fasen outside his home in Calpe

GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested an expat for his part in Europe’s biggest food scam, also known as Horsegate, the horse meat scandal.

Jan Fasen, 68, was arrested at his home in Calpe, on the Costa Blanca, after claims by France, where he was sentenced to two years in prison by the High Court in Paris last February. He is accused of having sold, with his cronies, more than 538 tons of meat as beef, which contained horse. The food fraud was discovered in the UK in 2013, when it was found that frozen burgers supplied to several supermarkets, including Tesco, contained horse DNA. The meat, palmed off as beef, was introduced to pre-cooked dishes such as lasagna, moussaka and chili.

Fasen has moved through Europe in recent years, leaving behind a trail of fraud and scandals, always related to horse meat. The scam resulted in a recall of 50,000 tonnes of meat products across Europe, to become its largest food scandal. The horse meat was even found in meat products in stores, including giant UK supermarket Tesco. Fasen has moved through Europe in recent years, leaving behind a trail of fraud and scandals, always related to horse meat. In 2009, he was convicted in his country for passing horse meat as halal beef. In 2017, he was at the epicentre of a macroperation in Spain, also for a similar fraud, selling meat from

Molly’s Animal Care News This lovely chap is urgently looking for a foster home or forever family. He was a muchloved family pet, but, when a baby came along, the family could not cope, and had no option but to give him up. He’s not enjoying kennels and really needs to be in a home environment. He is a mid-sized dog, with long hair. He’s a lovely, friendly boy, who loves lots of fuss and cuddles. He’s fine with other dogs, too. Please get in touch, if you can offer our lovely Simba a home.

recreational horses that do not meet strict veterinary requirements. After his arrest, on 23rd July in Calpe, Fasen was placed at the disposal of the Central Court of Instruction 3 of the National Court, which will decide whether to extradite Fasen to France. Fasen, and the rest of his network, are accused of animal abuse, document falsification, money-laundering, criminal organisation and crimes against public health. More than 60 people have been arrested in a crackdown on the scandal.

Meet Simba

THIS isn’t something we like to say, but there are many dogs in K9 who get overlooked. Whether they are too shy, too nervous, too old or too big, they never get the love and attention that some of our more playful, younger dogs receive.

This leaves them living longer and longer in a kennel, and not getting the love and happy life that they really deserve. Back in November 2017, this particular boy was found by the police in San Miguel, near to K9. He was given the name Raven. He was not in good condition, and was skin and bone. For his height, this was not a good state for him to be in. We reckoned he was about two years of age at the time, which would make him about four now. K9 took him in and started to build him up. He slowly gained weight, and is now in great condition. Raven is a very unique and special boy. For those of you who are familiar with him, or have walked him, you will know just how playful he can be, and he would absolutely love a play-mate. He has a brilliant personality, and you cannot help but fall in love with this extremely handsome boy. When out walking, Raven can have very playful moments, and, for those not experienced with dogs, this can put them off him. This makes us sad because he is just misunderstood, and really deserves a second chance in a loving home. Raven currently lives on his

own in the kennel, but has been socialised with other playful female dogs who he had so much fun with. He has a lot of energy, and needs somewhere to use it up, so this is ideal for him. He loves to run around and have fun, and is at his happiest when he is playing. Raven is a favourite among most of the K9 volunteers who work there most days of the week, and he sometimes like to play a game with us. We have a big space up at the top of our kennels which our dogs use daily, and get to run around for a little while. Raven loves this space so much that when we call him to come down, he comes down half way, waits for us to open the gate, and then runs back up to the top again! This can go on for a while sometimes, but, most of the time, he comes down, and, if given the opportunity, will come in for a big cuddle. The photograph here doesn’t do Raven justice. When you see him in real life, he is a stunning, large dog. He is brindle coloured, with a big heart. Can you offer Raven a second chance? Have you got a playful dog that is looking for someone to play with? Raven would be the perfect addition to your family. Please do not overlook him, and come up and meet him. If you are interested in getting to know Raven, and welcoming him into your home, please call at K9, any day, between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife. com

Snack on almonds ALMONDS are among the world’s mostpopular tree nuts. They are highly nutritious, and rich in healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Health benefits They deliver a massive amount of nutrients, and are the edible seeds of Prunus dulcis, more commonly called the almond tree. They are native to the Middle East, but the US is now the world’s largest producer. The almonds you can buy in stores usually have the shell removed, revealing the edible nut inside. They are sold either raw or roasted. They are also used to produce almond milk, oil,

butter, flour or paste, also known as marzipan. Antioxidants

Almonds are a fantastic source of antioxidants. Antioxidants help protect

against oxidative stress, which can damage molecules in your cells, and contribute to inflammation, ageing and diseases like cancer. The powerful antioxidants in almonds are largely concentrated in the brown layer of the skin. For this reason, blanched almonds, those with skin removed, are not the best choice, from a health perspective. Vitamin E Vitamin E is a family of fatsoluble antioxidants. These antioxidants tend to build up in cell membranes in your body, protecting your cells from oxidative damage. Almonds are among the world’s best sources of Vitamin E, with just one ounce providing 37% of the

RDA. Blood-sugar control Nuts are low in carbs but high in healthy fats, protein and fibre. This makes them a perfect choice for people with diabetes. Another boon of almonds is their remarkably high amount of magnesium. Magnesium is a mineral involved in more than 300 bodily processes, including blood-sugar control. The current RDA for magnesium is 310420 mg. Two ounces of almonds provide 150 mg of this important mineral. Interestingly, 25-38% of people with Type 2 diabetes are deficient in magnesium. Correcting this deficiency significantly lowers bloodsugar levels, and improves

for optimum health insulin function. People without diabetes also see major reductions in insulin resistance when supplementing with magnesium. This indicates that high-magnesium foods, such as almonds, may help prevent metabolic syndrome and Type 2 diabetes, both of which are major health problems. Blood-pressure levels The magnesium in almonds may additionally help lower blood-pressure levels. High blood pressure is one of the leading causes of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. A deficiency in magnesium is strongly linked to high blood pressure, regardless of whether you are overweight. Studies show that correcting

a magnesium deficiency can lead to major reductions in blood pressure. If you do not meet the dietary recommendations for magnesium, adding almonds to your diet could have a huge impact. Almonds reduce hunger Almonds are low in carbs and high in protein and fibre, which are known to increase feelings of fullness. One fourweek study involving 137 participants showed that a daily 1.5ozs (43g) serving of almonds significantly reduced hunger and the desire to eat. Weight loss Nuts contain several nutrients that your body struggles to break down and digest. Your body does not absorb about 10-15% of the calories in nuts.

Chill Out bar and restaurant Chill Out bar and restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, including Chateaubriand and Dorada al Sol. Why not come and dine, whilst watching the sun setting over Las Vistas beach, truly a beautiful setting to enjoy a lovely meal.

Additionally, some evidence suggests that eating nuts can boost metabolism, slightly. Because of their satiating properties, nuts are a great addition to an effective, weight-loss diet. In one study, a low-calorie diet with 3ozs (84g) of almonds increased weight loss by 62%, compared with a diet enriched with complex carbohydrates. Despite being high in fat, almonds are definitely a weight-loss-friendly food. Almonds and other nuts are very high in calories. Although almonds are high in calories, eating them doesn’t seem to promote weight gain. Some studies even suggest the opposite, showing that almonds can enhance weight loss.

Ways to check your car is road-legal

from Motorworld

THE Guardia Civil have advised that if you want to save yourself an €800 fine, then use the coin trick.

Our vehicle needs be in good mechanical condition to drive safely, and without any worries. One of the most vital things that gets overlooked is the tyres. These are so important, because they are the only parts of the car that make contact with the ground. This is why we should check them each time we fill up the car, or when we check the tyre pressures, and we must make sure they are in good condition. Also, we should ALWAYS invest in good-quality tyres. It is false economy to spend, for example, €50 on tyres, if, during an emergency situation, they don’t respond as they should.

Driving with dangerous tyres can also incur a fine from the authorities. A single fine can be up to €800, because it puts at risk the driver’s life, as well as those of other road users and pedestrians. The Guardia Civil has issued an easy way to test the tyres, with a €1 coin.

The €1 coin is made up of an exterior gold perimeter, and a silver interior. It is a simple as inserting the coin into the tread of the tyre. If the coil part is completely covered, then the tyre has enough tread: in technical terms, this is a minimum of 1.7 mm.

If the coil part is visible, then the tyre needs to be changed, urgently. However, if you value your safety, tyres should be changed when they get to a 3mm depth. The minimum depth is all over the tyre, not just in the centre, as most people assume. If the

edge is scrubbed clean, but the middle still has a 3mm depth, then the tyre needs to be replaced. Tyres can wear, unevenly, because of mechanical issues with the car. However, the most common causes of uneven wear are over or under-inflated tyres. In overinflated tyres, the centre is the only part touching the road, and, in under-inflated tyres, the outside edge is the only part touching the road. Unevenly-worn tyres, and/ or under/over inflated ones, are the biggest cause of tyre blow-outs. These can be costly and dangerous, and, in some cases, life-threatening. Your car will have a plaque indicating the correct tyre pressures, or they will be shown in the hand book. Please don’t use the petrol stations’ gauges as an accurate reading, as most of them aren’t calibrated. Please check your tyres. It could help save your life, and someone else’s.

Sunscreen not as safe as we think! If you’re like most people, you slap on plenty of spray or lotion, before stepping out into the blazing-hot sun, hoping to protect yourself from the cancer-causing UV rays that bombard us when we go outside.

By Val Sainsbury And for many among us, this isn’t simply a case of slathering on sunscreen when we head to the beach or to an outdoor, all-day picnic. We need the stuff daily for our day at work, school, or simple, outdoor recreation. But according to new research from the US

Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the chemicals in our sunscreen don’t merely sit on top of our skin until we wash it off. Instead, many of the active ingredients enter our bloodstream, at levels far in excess of what was previously believed. A recent publication reported that after applying spray, lotion and cream, there is a

“systemic absorption of sunscreen active ingredients”, well beyond the FDA’s recommended limits. And while it remains unclear what the effect of this seepage into our bloodstream is, the data supports a need for further FDA investigation, to determine exactly what the health impact of these findings are. Theresa Michele, director of the FDA division of non-prescription drug products, and a co-author of the study, said: “Everyone had always thought that because these are intended to work on the surface of the skin that they wouldn’t be absorbed, but they are.” The data reveals how, in our ongoing fight against skin cancer, the most-common malignancy in the US, which affects an estimated 3.3 million people per year, we have applied vast amounts of sunscreen. It is considered to be an over-the-counter

medication in the US, without having been tested, to see what the health impact could be. In a statement about the study, JAMA Dermatology editor-inchief Kanade Shinkai, and former FDA Chairman Robert Califf, noted: “Sunscreens have not been subjected to standard drug safety testing, and clinicians and consumers lack data on systemic drug levels, despite decades of widespread use. “Furthermore, appropriately-designed trials have not yet been conducted to understand the optimal sunscreen dose needed to achieve a balance of

risk and benefit, when used to prevent skin cancer and melanoma.” Researchers looked into the concentration of four active ingredients in 24 participants’ bloodstreams, including avobenzone, ecamsule, octocrylene and oxybenzone. Participants were told to apply one of three different types of sunscreen - spray, lotion or cream four times a day for four days, on exposed skin that was uncovered by a swimsuit, as per recommended usage. Oxybenzone, in particular, reached the plasma concentration threshold a mere two hours after a single application. What

makes this alarming is that the lingering presence of the sunfiltering molecules in the bloodstream remains a mystery, in terms of what, if anything, this means for our bodies. Continuing, Shinkai and Califf explained: “The study findings raise many important questions about sunscreen and the process by which the sunscreen industry, clinicians, speciality organisations, and regulatory agencies evaluate the benefits and risks of this topical OTC medication. “First and foremost, it is essential to determine whether systemic absorption of sunscreen poses risks to human health. Second, the effects of different sunscreen formulations, clinical characteristics (ie skin type, age, presence of skin diseases that disrupt the skin barrier), physical activity level, and exposure to sun and water, on systemic sunscreen levels, require further study.”

Wayne’s world at the top!

division 1 ResultS

The Club House

IT’S all to play for at the top of the league, after the Week 7 match between the top two ended with a 5-3 home win for Pas O Nadas A, partly thanks to a Double One finish by Wayne in the trebles.

It left Gaffers#teamhollywood ruing missed opportunities, having taken two games in a row to get back on terms at 3-3. However, they shouldn’t be too downhearted, because the teams are deadlocked on 40 points each. And it was good to see Daniel Peel back in the singles, after a long absence. Suters 20:30 Crew welcomed the Waterfall, and Steve impressed with two 14-dart legs, which included a 180 as they posted a 7-1 win. That should show the league that they’re still up for it! Pas O Nadas International started

off so well in their match, taking a 4-1 lead, and it just looked a matter of how big the win would be. But visitors Sandys Bookie Boys raised their game and claimed the next three, for a well-earned 4-4 draw. Loch Inn Bullseyes played host to The Pub, who finished well in their 7-1 victory. The match featured “Daryn The Bear” versus “Grizzly” (sounds like American wrestling, not darts), and, to add to that, Pete hit a cracking 156 checkout, which is the best in the league, so far this year. Scooters A travelled to Sandys Bandits, but were no match on the night, the hosts cruising to a 6-2 win. So Scooters can’t even say they were robbed. Pardon the pun! In Division 2, Shar led the way with another 180, and, along with her Playgirls, they kept up their good form, winning the trebles to clinch an impressive 5-3 victory at Clouseau’s. But Marilyns are finding it tough

going this year, as their latest game ended with an 8-0 home defeat against Palms Sports Bar. But they won’t stay down for long! Club House are still going well, putting seven past Naughty Nautas, and Pink Elephant matched them. They also had a 7-1 win, visiting Sundowners being on the receiving end. With Tom showing no mercy to sister Kim’s team, Picassos Pool Bar had a close game against visiting Pas O Nadas, which could have gone either way, but finished 5-3 to the home side. Scooters, who were looking for a home win against Emerald Lounge, were pipped at the post as the visitors took the trebles, and, along with it, a draw, which was probably a fair result. OurPlace Breakaways played well against high-flying Club Activo, but they couldn’t quite hang on for a draw, their visitors winning the 701 game for a 5-3 victory.

Ronaldo’s tough-guy pal, who’s his close neighbour

No-sale Bale loses a yen for millions!

WALES winger Gareth Bale has been dealt a huge blow by Real Madrid, who have blocked his multi-millioneuro move to China. CRISTIANO Ronaldo has expanded his property empire with a €1.4m mansion in Marbella, close to Conor McGregor, Ireland’s much-acclaimed UFC fighter, said to be the world’s fourth-highestpaid sportsman of all, just behind ex-Manchester United star Ronaldo.

His four-bedroom property, on the La Resina estate, has taken the Juventus star’s housing portfolio to €29m. While not directly neighbours, the athletes are more than close enough to be on nodding terms in the luxurious development, nicknamed the “Superstars Cul De Sac”. Ronaldo’s new high-tech villa (pictured) has an LED-lit driveway, private gym, cinema room and infinity pool. And views of the Mediterranean are provided by ceiling-to-floor windows, alongside high ceilings and floating staircases.

McGregor is a known fan of the new kid on the block, especially after Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Atletico Madrid, earlier this year. The 31-year-old Dubliner said: “Cristiano is a phenomenal athlete, person, and entrepreneur. His all-around discipline, perfectionist attitude and dedication to his craft has inspired so many

young children to play football. “Just look what he did recently in the Champions League, at 34 years young, a hat-trick under the lights when the pressure was on for all the marbles. “And against Atletico Madrid, one of the best defensive sides in Europe. That is inspiring! We are both disciplined athletes at the top of our game.”

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

He would have earned €1.1m weekly, had he been allowed to join Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning, on a three-year deal. But Madrid President Florentino Perez put the block on his enormous move, after the Real board asked for a transfer fee. The 30-year-old Welshman will now continue at Real Madrid, where he joined in 2013 from Tottenham for a then-record fee of €100m. It is unlikely that another European club will be able to foot Bale’s €660,000-a-week wage. The shock decision comes after Galacticos boss Zinedine Zidane admitted: “It would be best for everyone if he left Real Madrid.” His comment followed a relationship breakdown between the pair, who, together, won three Champions League titles. And, after the French manager left Bale out of a pre-season game with Bayern Munich, which Madrid lost, he said: “We hope he leaves soon. We are working on his transfer to a new team.” Zidane added: “I have nothing personal against him, but there comes a time where things are done because they must be done.” Bale still has three years left on his contract with the Bernabeu club, where he has made just 79 La Liga starts in the previous three seasons, after accumulating numerous injuries.

Messi takes time out to tackle beach kids

BARÇELONA s u p e r hero Lionel Messi made a dream come true for a group of children, on a Caribbean beach, by playing football with the youngsters.

During the pre-season break with his wife, Antonela, and their three sons Thiago, Mateo and Ciro, Messi was recognised by a bunch of football-playing children and offered to join in. The Argentine star, and his eldest son Thiago, spent a few minutes kicking a ball around on Antigua, where he and Antonela spent their honeymoon. The delighted youngsters were given some valuable advice on their techniques, which they’ll never forget. It happened during his family holiday, ahead of the start of the Liga season, and Messi has been posting photos on Instagram of his last few days of family time in paradise. Now, though, it’s back to work for the superstar. For his young followers, however, they can’t wait to return to their schoolmates, to tell them about their new coach!
