Driver hurt as lorry tumbles into ravine

Joint Government probe to solve the huge ‘scam’

Continued from Front

A 54-YEAR-OLD lorry driver was seriously injured after his vehicle toppled into a ravine as he drove along the TF-65 in the early hours.

The incident happened on Wednesday in the San Miguel de Abona vicinity. The emergency services were alerted and fire-fighters were

dispatched immediately, to help recover the driver, and his lorry. An ambulance was also made available, along with a doctor and nurse from the Los Cristianos medical centre. Once the man was rescued from the lorry, he was assessed by the medics, and, because of the severity of bruising he had endured, he was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.

Police bag drug dealer

NATIONAL Police arrested a 23-year-old man in Fanabe on Tuesday, after finding 48 small bags of cocaine in his possession, all prepared for general sale. The police were staging a control on street-sellers,

when they came across the man, laden with drugs. He was arrested and charged with possessing a Class A drug for sale. The man, along with the police report, will be presented before the judicial authorities.

Hiker breaks leg, falling into ravine A MAN out hiking broke a leg in Santiago del Teide on Wednesday afternoon, after tumbling from the El Brujero Route. The emergency services were advised, and a helicopter was sent to the area because the victim had fallen in a precarious location, directly into a ravine in the Tamaimo vicinity. Adeje’s voluntary fire-fighters were also at the scene to help assist with the emergency, and, initially, they tended the injured man and helped to move him. Once he had been hoisted on to the helicopter, he was taken to a helipad, where a medical team were waiting to assess him.

However, apart from his broken limb, there were no other complications, and he was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment and observation. The Local Police were also at the scene to assist in the emergency.

Politicians in both countries are fully aware that these fraudulent policies lead travellers to believe that they have been sold private medical cover, for their trips to Spain. The situation was highlighted when a 72-year-old British holiday-maker died after suffering a heart attack in Lanzarote. Members of Spain’s Alliance for Private Health (ASPE), who represent private hospitals and clinics, have held meetings with British, Spanish and European officials about taking action to address the fraudulent policies. These policies result in patients, who believe they have purchased private cover, putting extra strain on private hospitals, and risking their own health, without knowing it. A large number of complaints have been made against fraudulent UK insurance companies, who, for years, have profited by selling travel insurance policies, which don’t cover some treatments, leaving patients with bills of up to €4,000. The UK and Spanish governments, as well as the Community of Madrid, have informed ASPE, the Spanish Department of Private Health, that they are willing to put in place the first set of measures, aimed at curbing these bad practices. ASPE also expects the involvement of Spain’s Ministry of Health, to add extra measures in a coordinated action between them all, for the main, affected regions. Representatives of ASPE have held several meetings this week, after requesting up to 20 get-togethers with Spanish, English and European institutions, along with political parties, plus consumer protection and sector organisations. In particular, officials from ASPE, have had talks with the British Embassy in Spain, the Spanish Foreign Ministry and the Community of Madrid’s Ministry of Health, as well as the Linkham company, to investigate the claims, and assess possible actions they can implement to improve the situation. The ASPE objective is to seek support to tackle a problem saturating Britain’s Public Health system, with patients who have paid for a private policy, generating economic and administrative problems for private hospitals, as well

as harming British tourists, putting their health at risk. The British Consulate has pledged to distribute, through its channels, detailed information on the medical coverage given by the free European Health Card in Spain. It will also offer useful information on travel assistance insurance, to encourage travellers to know clearly and precisely what their rights are, when they are staying in Spain. Linkham, a company which markets UK travel insurance, has shown the same willingness for collaboration to find solutions, and to work more closely with ASPE to create a structure of mutual co-operation, between Spanish hospitals and British insurers. ASPE has also met with representatives of the Secretary of State for the European Union of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose intention is to hold a meeting in September with the Ministries of Health and Labour to discuss the matter. It also wants them to include travel insurance and medical-coverage information on the Spanish Embassy’s website in the UK. For its part, the Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid has offered its support to ASPE to help combat the European Health Card’s misuse. Apart from the organisations with which ASPE has already met, it has requested meetings with the Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Welfare, and with the General Directorate of Insurance, under the Ministry of Economy and Business. At a regional level, letters have been sent to the Ministry of Health of Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands and Murcia, and dates are already agreed with the councils of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Likewise, a meeting has been requested from the PSOE, PP, Citzens (Cs), United Podemos and Vox parties. At British level, in addition to the UK Embassy in Spain, the Conservative, Labour, and LibDem parties have all been contacted, as have the National Health Service (NHS), consumer associations, and the Association of British Insurers. On top of this, letters have been sent to the parties with the greatest representation in the European Parliament: European People’s Party, Party of European Socialists,

and Party of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe. According to the ASPE letter, sent to those organisations: “These companies are making a profit by marketing a citizen’s right; they manipulate and intimidate the customers and defame Spanish private health service. “This situation affects hundreds of patients, who do not know that their travel insurance policy does not cover assistance in private health centres, and confronts Spanish hospitals with unpaid bills, and unacceptable smear campaigns.” According to ASPE estimates, the fraud affects between one and four patients per day, in each of the 200 hospitals represented by them in the biggest tourist areas. But to support affected patients, private hospitals will provide claim forms to those affected by the fraud, urging them to continue their process of claiming liability from UK insurers. In addition, they will offer affected patients the possibility of continuing that process with a legal advice, and specialised knowledge in the matter, from Britain, to claim for the costs of sanitary treatment or, at least, of the sum of the policy they have paid. Likewise, private hospitals, affected by these irregularities but represented by ASPE, are measuring the number of cases during the summer months, accurately, to be able to assess the magnitude of the problem. Regarding the main demands of ASPE, it would be essential for public hospitals to demand the payment of treatment from the insurers responsible for the patient, instead of the British Public Health system, regardless of whether or not they have a European Health Card. It will also ask that these companies be required to transfer costs to public health, when patients are referred to them from private hospitals. On the other hand, the General Directorate of Insurance of the Ministry of Economy will be requested to urge the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK to have travel policies, with a specific document, clearly detailing medical coverage to the policy-holder, what is included and excluded from health care, and to which centres they may or may not be treated at.

Teenager’s golden home spree is not that friendly Aggressive man, who pounced on a woman THE National Police detained a 40-yearold man, with several offensive charges against his name, after he followed, intimidated and then attacked a woman violently.

The horrific incident happened in Santa Cruz, on Imeldo Seris street, while she was leaving her work in the early hours of Wednesday. She realised that she was being followed when, suddenly, she was grabbed and then physically intimidated by the man. Her attacker, in order not to cause suspicion, would let go of the woman, momentarily, as vehicles passed by. Once they were alone on the street, he grabbed hold of her once again

and began to further intimidate her, insisting that she handed over all her personal belongings. He was also insisting that she followed his instructions. Once the attacker had what he required, he fled, leaving the victim in a complete state of shock. But she was able to call the National Police, telling officers that man had to be in the Santa Cruz area. The police were dispatched there, immediately, and located the man quickly, after her brief description of the assailant. But the man realised what was going on and began to run away. The police gave chase and caught him near La Plaza de Conception. They arrested him and took him to the police station for further questioning. He is awaiting a court hearing.

A TEENAGER was arrested by National Police after being accused of stealing money and jewellery from several homes where his so-called friends lived.

The 18-year-old, already with previous convictions for similar offences, is believed to have robbed five houses, from February to July, between Santa Cruz and La Laguna. His method was to befriend certain people to win their trust, so he could then gain access into their homes. Once that trust was established, he began to steal money, as well as other personal items, which he then sold to various secondhand shops, specialising in valuables. Officers were able to open investigations after several reports of house robberies were reported, all of them featuring similar characteristics. The police noticed these similarities, yet there was no evidence of any properties

Innocent gay man is punched in the face A GAY man, out with his partner in Santa Cruz, was punched by another person, who had asked the couple if they were “maricones” (faggots). It was the sixth homophobic attack to have taken place in Tenerife this year, and it happened last Saturday, during the couple’s night out. They had just left a restaurant and were walking towards their car when they were approached by a couple of men from behind. One of them surprised the couple by asking: “So, are you both faggots?” But before they could respond, one of the partners was punched in the face, and the assailant and his pal ran away. Charlie Marrero, from the LGBTI association, said it was not an isolated case, because, apart from the previous five assaults on

having forced entry. That led to officers watching the properties, and the comings and goings of people frequenting them. They soon discovered that several youngsters had a special friend, aged 18, in common, which is why the officers were able to wrap up their investigation successfully, with an arrest! From the five reported robberies, the thief totalled large sums of cash, as well as lots of valuable jewellery. In one property alone, it was reported that the sum stolen was €3,500, which included coins. The thief also helped himself to gold items, such as

rings, necklaces and chains, each weighing in at 24 carats. During their investigation, officers discovered that multiple transactions were carried out at specific establishments, specialising in buying and selling valuables. In total, some 52 items of gold, valued at €10,000, were sold, but, fortunately, several pieces were recovered and returned to their rightful owners. The thieving teenager, who was arrested in Santa Cruz last Monday morning, was presented before the judicial authorities, along with the police reports.

Person tumbles to his death!

A MAN passed away after an accidental fall, several metres down a hillside in Icod de los Vinos last Sunday afternoon. gay men, there have also been several reports of transsexual people being targeted. Algarabía, the association against LGBTI phobia, states that their ultimate goals are to reduce the violence suffered by LGBTI people and also to encourage

attitudes of respect for diversity. The association can be contacted on 601 266 376, or by emailing Observavsatorio@ algarabiatfe.org Marta Febles, President of Algarabía, said: “It is necessary to report any sign of discrimination, based on orientation or identity.”

The Canarian emergency services, when informed, sent specialised teams to the hill, in the Charco la Mareta area. Fire-fighters were among those to head there, along with the emergency helicopter, to give assistance. He was eventually rescued, while still unconscious, and, once in the hands of

the professionals, he was diagnosed with severe bruising, internally as well as externally. The unidentified man was taken, swiftly, by the emergency helicopter, to an ambulance waiting at a nearby La Guancha helipad. Once on the ground, the ambulance team went to assess the man. But at that point, they were only able to confirm his death, caused by the severity of his injuries. Local Police and Guardia Civil officers were also in the area, to assist in the emergency.

El Hierro beats 18-day spree for 100% renewables supply

EL HIERRO, secondsmallest of the Canary Islands, has supplied itself with 100% renewable energy for more than 18 consecutive days in July, revealed its Local Government.

Starting on 13th July, up to 31st July, the island’s entire electricity came from renewables, beating its own 2018 record when the island’s Gorona del Viento, wind power-based, pumped-hydro system met local demand successfully for 18 days running. Gorona del Viento managed

to cover 97% of demand in July, while, for the first seven months this year, it produced 51% of the island’s electricity. The facility consists of an 11.5MW wind farm of five turbines, which delivers electricity to the hydro storage system. A back-up diesel engine is put into operation when neither water nor wind can

Man, 64, discovered dead in Adeje ravine

A MAN aged 64, who was reported missing by his family last Saturday morning, was found dead in Adeje’s Taucho ravine at 7.30pm that evening. Red Cross volunteers, working alongside other search parties, rescued his lifeless body after the searchers had discovered it, using specially-trained rescue dogs. The victim’s family said his absence was reported on social media because he hadn’t been seen from

around 7am, and they made it clear that he could be disorientated. Such was the terrain where he was found that a rescue helicopter was sent to recover the body, taking it to an area more accessible. The tragic man was the father of well-known Canarian lightweight kickboxer Jonay Risco, ranked ninth in the world. The deceased’s daughter thanked the emergency workers, via social media, but was deeply saddened that her father’s body hadn’t been found earlier.

NEWS IN BRIEF Irish youngster’s death Car-crash victim hurt

A 25-YEAR-OLD driver was injured after coming off the TF-47 road, close to the Armeñime town, inside the Adeje municipality. The accident was reported last Sunday morning, when a call was received by the Canarian emergency services at around 7.30, requesting an ambulance. The caller stated that a car had crashed into a post, causing the vehicle to run into a wall. An ambulance was sent to the scene, and its medical team soon ascertained that he had suffered considerable bruising. The man was then taken to a nearby hospital, for observation and further treatment.

Lifeguard assaulted on patrol

A LIFEGUARD was assaulted on the La Venziola beach in the tourist town of La Manga del Mar Menor, in the Murcia region.

A boat reportedly entered the area designated for swimmers, which is prohibited because it endangers the bathers. The lifeguard issued a warning with his whistle, which was ignored by the two people aboard the boat, which broke through the protective jellyfish nets. People on the beach began protesting against the men’s actions, but this failed to stop them from continuing their route towards the beach. The lifeguard tried to photograph the boat, but one of the two occupants is believed to have punched the life-saver, leaving him with a split eyebrow and an eye injury, as well as breaking his spectacles. The lifeguard was treated by paramedics, who gave him several stitches, while Local Police were able to identify the alleged suspects. The local council has already initiated criminal proceedings against the person who hit out.

It’s no laughing matter! GUARDIA Civil have caught a man, who videoed himself tossing a fridge off a cliff in Almeria and laughing: “Let’s recycle!”

He was identified by the Guardia’s environmental arm, SEPRONA, and ordered to return to the scene to dispose of it properly. He was also fined €45,000. A second video, tweeted by the Unified Association of Civil Guards, showed the man struggling to drag it back up the deep ravine, into which he had thrown it.

Illegal immigrants take off

A SEARCH was underway earlier this week after 16 illegal immigrants escaped from Tenerife’s Hoya Fría Internment Centre for Foreigners (CIE), in Santa Cruz.

The escape occurred at around nine o'clock last Saturday morning, and the police say they have now arrested seven of the runaways. The National Police have requested the collaboration of Local Police in Santa Cruz and La Laguna, to hunt out the rest.

The 15-year-old was fatally injured after attempting to jump from a five-metre-high wall and swing on a lamppost, only to miss and crash to the ground, injuring his head severely. The incident happened just before 4am last Monday on the Puerto del Carmen seafront, and was attended by two Local Police officers, before an emergency ambulance arrived. At one point, his heart

stopped beating, yet medics were able to revive the teenager and stabilise him, before taking him to José Molina Orosa Hospital for further treatment. But, tragically, he passed away. Navan O’Mahonys GAA club, for whom Mikey played

Gaelic football, were among those paying tribute to the youngster in the Irish Tines. “We wish to express our profound sadness and shock at the tragic passing of Mikey,” said a club statement. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the Leddy family and Mikey’s many friends and teammates.” Rival club Skryne GFC added their condolences, saying: “We would like to express our deepest sympathy and shock at the tragic passing of Mikey, who had no shortage of friends in Skryne GFC. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Leddy family, Mikey’s friends and all his team-mates in Navan O’Mahonys.”

A ‘body bag’ threat for holiday woman A WOMAN has relived the horrifying holiday moment when her then partner pinned her to the ground, telling her she would be “going home in a body bag”.

Kimberly Walker 25, who runs her own dance studio in Arbroath, said it was only after holiday-makers heard her screams for help that she was able to escape. The attack took place in a Las Americas hotel last month, when Kimberly was on holiday with her boyfriend,

Mikey McEwan, from Letham, in Angus, Scotland. At the time, McEwan already had a conviction for assaulting a previous girlfriend. During the unprovoked attack, said Kimberly, McEwan knelt on her arms, pinned her to the ground, grabbed her by the neck and threatened her. “He told me I’d be going home in a body bag,” she added. “I was terrified. I really thought I was going to die that night.” McEwan, arrested immediately after the attack, appeared before a court in Tenerife the next day. Kimberly said: “Initially, he

pleaded not guilty. However, he changed his plea and admitted what he had done.” McEwan was given a twoyear suspended sentence by the court, to be of good behaviour, and also subjected to a 16-month restraining order, preventing him from contacting Kimberly. She said she discussed her ordeal to warn other young women about McEwan, stressing: “This isn’t the first time Mikey has attacked a girlfriend. “In 2017, another of his former girlfriends, Chloe Hendry, spoke out about the time he attacked her. I have now spoken with Chloe and, while she wants to put this all behind her, she did tell me a little of what happened to her.” McEwan was fined £320 at Dundee Sheriff Court after admitting his assault on Chloe, on 6th November, 2016, pushing her on to a bed and punching her head, repeatedly. Kimberly said she had been in a relationship with McEwan for two years when he attacked her, adding: “During that time, he never laid a finger on me. “It had started off as a really good relationship, and, for the previous 10 months, we had been living together in Letham. “However, cracks were beginning to show, and this holiday was a make-or-break for us.”

Ambassador Manley on move, after almost six years in Spain

Illegal cultural trade thieves have no idea just what’s hit them

GUARDIA Civil officers have led a huge international operation against the trafficking of “cultural goods”.

During operation Pandora III, law-enforcement authorities assigned thousands of police and customs officers to focus on online markets and key hot-spots. Their aim was to disrupt the activities of criminal groups involved in this form of trafficking, and, in total, 59 people were arrested, and more than 18,000 cultural goods seized, including archaeological artefacts, furniture, coins, paintings, musical instruments and sculptures. The majority of objects seized were from European countries, but more than 30 objects originated in countries outside Europe, such as Colombia, Egypt, Iraq and Morocco. According to police, fighting the illicit trafficking of cultural goods online is a key challenge. Criminal groups take advantage of digital platforms, such as websites, social media and instant messaging apps, to sell cultural artefacts of unlawful provenance. Around 10,000 archaeological artefacts were seized as a result of a single, successful investigation, con-

ducted by the Guardia Civil. Some 91 ceramic objects and 109 ancient coins were seized by the Italian Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (Carabinieri TPC), in private premises and mail centres. And, in a single investigation, 419 cultural objects were seized by Polish Police (Policja). Dutch Police even spotted a 15th-century bible, which had been stolen in Germany over 25 years ago. This rare edition was seized and returned to its rightful home in Germany. And Romanian Police (Policia Română) seized 128 pieces of ancient, Roman, military personal equipment, 134 pieces of antique ceramics and 189 coins (from the Hellenistic, Roman Republican and Roman Imperial periods) which had been lifted from archaeological sites. German Customs seized an ancient Mesopotamian crystal cylinder seal, which had been shipped to Germany by post. Meanwhile, the astonishing, fruitful investigation is ongoing. Customs and other law enforcement authorities from 29 countries, co-ordinated by the Guardia Civil and supported by Europol, INTERPOL and the World Customs Organisation (WCO), have all joined forces for the operation.

Reckless drivers, beware the long-distance drones THE Guardia Civil, along with the DGT (General Traffic Department), have incorporated drones that can detect, from as far as two kilometres, motorists driving without seat belts, as well as those using mobile phones.

Initially, the drones will be used on the two main Tenerife motorways, as well as specific areas used for illegal car-racing, in Los Loros, for example. The campaign began at the beginning of this month, at the start of the summer holidays, when the motorways should be busier. The Los Matrice M200 drone, which costs around €5,000-€8,000, is equipped with a specialised high-

pixel camera and will be employed in Tenerife until mid-August, when it will be

transferred to Gran Canaria for the rest of the month. Between September and

October, it is anticipated that each province in Spain will have a permanent traffic

drone. It has so far been used in specific areas, such as Arafo, La Chiquita and Guia de Isora, where several reports of illegal racing have since been reported by local residents. Guardia Civil officers are almost certain that once the public detect the drone’s presence, illegal racing and dangerous driving will be reduced, considerably. As well as controlling the dangerous zones, the drones have continued to watch the North and South motorways. The device is controlled by two Guardia Civil officers, working from the same post daily. The pilot is responsible for manoeuvring the device, while the camera records and takes still images. Fines issued to drivers who break the law will be notified by a patrol officer, via images sent from Traffico headquarters.

EUROPE’S biggest zipline, which has just been launched, could turn a tiny mountain village into one of inland Spain’s greatest tourist attractions.

third the height of the tallest peak in the Picos de Europe mountain range in the north. In short, it is not recommended for anyone with vertigo! Setting it up has taken over three years, and harnesstesting has taken months, since weather conditions and human weight all make a difference to angles and equipment. For example, when there is no wind, lightweight people do not reach the end of the line. And, if there is a wind, heavier people go too fast, said Cristián Cutanda, of the Alqui Fuentespalda installation company. “The best conditions are when there is no wind, and the experience is absolutely wonderful,” he added. His company had to experiment with each and every possible weight, and every possible wind speed. Also, in addition to weather conditions affecting installation and testing, the logistics of setting up the zip-line were tricky: they had to fix a cable 803m above sea-level, and sloping at a 150m gradient,

without any support between the beginning and end. Even employing the same equipment and technology as used in ski stations, of which Teruel has two, to set up chair lifts, the zip-line fitting was even more complex, and machines used had to be supported from the air by helicopter. Fuentespalda Mayoress Carmen Agud said: “Those people with any disability can use it, as long as they’re able to lie down.” It is, in fact, the first-ever designed to be suitable for disabled people. The line runs between the Puente Umbría slope and the San Miguel hermitage chapel in Fuentespalda, a village of 286 inhabitants in the district of Matarraña. Officially, it is the longest in Europe, with a descent speed of at least 80km/h. It is not quite the longest or the fastest in the world, though: that’s in Ras alKhaimah in the United Arab Emirates, with a speed of 150km/h) and 2.83km long.

Europe’s longest zip-line will lift mountain village Fuentespalda, in the southern Aragón province of Teruel, has about 300 inhabitants, and around 75% of the population live in villages of fewer than 300 people. Suddenly, though, it has been added to holiday wish-lists for thrill-seekers, from as far away as Galicia, Barcelona, Navarra and Madrid. The zip-line opened last Monday and is two kilometres long, with a gradient of 150m, which is about the same as the upper part of a ski resort’s “green slope”, and hangs at 803m above ground. That makes it two-thirds the height of most of the province’s Gúdar mountain range, 50m higher than the Montgó mountain summit, which overlooks the east coast seaside towns of Dénia and Jávea, and one-

Spanish ports welcomed 4.7m cruise passengers in half year SPANISH ports’ cruisepassenger numbers rose by 4.9% to 4.7m in the first six months of this year, despite a 4.4% decline in port calls. It reflects the ongoing trend for higher-capacity vessels, with eight of the top-10 cruise ports, including the top five, reporting growth in passenger numbers, although all five had fewer port calls. Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, together, handled more than half of the nation’s cruise-passenger traffic. Barcelona again headed the list, with 1.28m passengers, up 1.9%, and 342 vessel calls, down by 2.3%. The Balearics followed, with just over one million passengers, a 3.8% gain, aboard 312 port calls, down by 9.6%. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria came third, with 868,525 passengers, a strong 16.2% growth, aboard 291 vessel calls, down by 11%, the strongest divergence in those two metrics among the leading Spanish ports. Tenerife’s neighbouring Santa Cruz also grew, with

574,559 passengers, up by a more modest 3.3%, aboard 248 vessel calls, substantially down by 15.9%. As usual, the numbers drop off significantly to fifth-ranked Bay of Cádiz, which reported 203, 206 passengers, up by 8%, aboard 150 vessel calls, down slightly by 1.3%. Malaga was in sixth place, with 200,000 passengers,

a 4.6% drop, on board 133 port calls, up 4.7% and an inversion of the usual trend toward larger vessels. Valencia did well in both metrics, coming in seventh with 184,000 passengers, a 16% increase, aboard 90 port calls, a 12.5% gain. At No.8, Cartagena reported 97,651 passengers, up 12.8%, on 74 port calls, a strong 27.6%

growth. A Coruña stood ninth, with 73,200 passengers, up by 33.5%, on 55 port calls, a 52.8% gain. The only divergence between passenger numbers and port calls came at the end of the list. Vigo was in 10th position with 53,576 passengers, down substantially by 30%. By port calls, Sevilla was No.10, with 44 visits, a 41.9% gain.

Restaurant boss killed by knifewielding chef

DINERS at a “Brit-friendly” restaurant in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, were left shaken after a chef killed the owner by stabbing him in the throat. The brutal killing took place at Las Vegas restaurant, rated the best on the island by British tourists. Customers were stunned to see the owner, a 45-year old father of three, appear in the entrance, bleeding heavily from the neck. Peter Ciacca, owner of a nearby bike-rental shop, said: “He approached with his neck cut and with his hand on it, asking for help. He then fell to the ground, and nothing could be done to save his life.” The incident occurred following an argument over working conditions, according to police, who arrested the attacker at the scene. The 59-year-old Spaniard has been charged with manslaughter.

Spain tops US for festivals tourism

Sex offender is nabbed, after seeking residencia A SEX offender from Northampton, on the run in Spain for six years, was caught in Barcelona after trying to apply for residencia.

SPAIN has, for the first time, positioned itself ahead of the United States as the secondmost-popular holiday destination, among foreign tourists, to enjoy a festival or event. A study conducted by StubHub shows that during the second quarter of this year, the preferred country for tourists, specifically for visiting a sporting or musical event, was the UK. However, Spain was a close second, pushing the US down the podium to third. Ticket sales website StubHub, owned by Ebay, calculated that the highest percentage of foreign tourists visiting

Spain to see their favourite band or sports team were US nationals. But because 21% of acts that foreigners come to witness actually hail from Spain, the remaining 79% of acts who come to perform in Spain appear to be drawing the biggest crowd. Ed Sheeran and Elton John are the biggest names on the roster, attracting the biggest crowds in Barcelona and Madrid. It seems, then, that those who would rather not suffer the British weather and American prices to watch their favourite musicians and sports stars, are heading to Spain instead, spending an average of €430 per head at each event, while enjoying a side of vitamin D.

Azhar Younas was reported to have sexually assaulted a 21-year-old woman in Northampton town centre in 2012. But he failed to turn up for sentencing at the Crown Court in 2013. The Northampton Chronicle newspaper reported that he was sentenced to four years in jail in his absence, and, after fleeing, became subject to a European arrest warrant. Younas spent six years sunning himself in Barcelona, posting regular beach selfies on Facebook, and working in a supermarket in Mataro, the city’s commercial capital. But police caught up with him in Spain after he applied for residencia, and officers discovered that he was the subject of a European arrest warrant. He was promptly deported and appeared at Northampton Crown Court

last Friday, where he was formally sentenced to four years in jail for the original offence. Judge Mayo also sentenced him to an extra four weeks for his “deliberate attempt to evade justice”. Ian Vesey, mitigating for Younas, said it was a case

of a man who panicked, adding that it was Younas himself who told authorities in Spain he believed he was wanted. Younas was placed on the sex-offenders’ register indefinitely, and banned from working with children for life.

Student’s new chance to join the National Police

13 CW

Thief used his mum’s vehicle for break-ins

A CANDIDATE has been given a second chance to become a serving National Police officer, having been dismissed from the 2011 training programme after sustaining an injury.

Madrid’s Superior Court of Justice has ordered the National Police School to accept the student back into the training process. The student, who has not been named, was dropped from the programme after a medical exam revealed that he had a 10cm scar on his right leg, near the ankle. He’d had an operation to repair a broken fibula, eight years ago. The student’s lawyer, Antonio Suárez-Valdés, argued that the candidate’s injury had completely healed after the surgery. “The mobility of the right ankle is complete and not painful, even if the last degrees of mobility are forced,” said Suárez-Valdés. “This surgery achieved a complete reduction of the fracture, which consolidated

developing an adequate bone callous, completely.” A clause in the Police training documents states that a candidate will be removed from the force if it is found that he/she has received “alterations of the musculoskeletal system that limit or hinder the development of the police function.” Now that he has retained full movement in his leg, however, he sought legal advice on how to proceed.

Suárez-Valdés warned that this was not the first time the same situation had occurred. “There are hundreds of people who suffer this type of situation every year, in contests for access to police forces,” he said. “I encourage all those who are in the same situation to defend their rights, constitutionally, before the courts, and no longer to be quiet over this type of injustice.”

A RUSSIAN holidaymaker informed Local Police in Santa Cruz that he’d had various items stolen from his hire car, while it was in the Taganana car park.

The officers, on duty in the Anaga vicinity, were given physical details of the thief, as well as a description of the car he was driving. Then, on their way to the car park, they spotted the suspect, driving on the TF134, towards Santa Cruz, and tailed him before bringing the car to a halt.

They identified him, and a search of the car revealed a pair of binoculars, designer sunglasses, a screwdriver, a watch, and a top-model mobile phone. The officers also believed that he’d also broken into a vehicle at another local car park, a few days earlier. They arrested the thief and took him to a nearby police station. The vehicle he was driving, which belonged to his mother, was taken by a pick-up truck to a police car pound, to await collection by her. The individual was later presented to the judicial authorities.

Rider caused Spain’s first E-scooter death, but is just facing fine

Doorstep woman KOd resident and stole €500

GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested a 24-yearold woman from El Ejido, on suspicion of knocking out and robbing a woman on the doorstep of her Almerimar home, in the Almeria province. The victim claimed she was whacked and lost

A TEENAGER killed a 90-year-old woman when he ran into her from behind, on his electric scooter, as she was returning home from her regular morning walk.

It was the first fatality in Spain, involving an E-scooter, but 19-year-old Alexi will face a fine at the most, sources close to the investigation have told the respected EL PAÍS daily newspaper. Alexi, 19, will face trial for recklessness, regarded as a minor offence, which means he will avoid a prison sentence if found guilty. The investigating judge agreed with the Public Prosecutor after determining, among other issues, that the youngster was riding at under 10km/hr. On 13th August last year, a pensioner named Berta was out for a morning stroll with her

walker in the pedestrianised section of the Rambla del Carme thoroughfare, in the Catalan town of Esplugues de Llobregat. As she headed back home, she was hit from behind by an E-scooter carrying two people. Berta, who fell and hit her head on the pavement, suffered internal bleeding and died later in Moisès Broggi Hospital. Berta’s death raised renewed concerns about the proliferation of alternative, mobility devices in cities across Spain, and the need for more stringent regulation. The judge opened an investigation into whether Alexi was guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The teenager testified in court, and recognised the accident details, which, it was emphasised, were not the object of controversy, unlike their legal classification. The Public Prosecutor said the young man was looking at his mobile phone when he

ran into the woman, which is the basis of the recklessness charge. Alexi tried to save Berta after he hit her, and, in the following days, went back to the Rambla del Carme, in search of Berta’s relatives to ask them for forgiveness. Alexi’s defence lawyer called for the case to be shelved, arguing that no type of crime had been committed because there was no recklessness. But the Public Prosecutor said that, given the circumstances, the youngster had committed “minor recklessness”. The penalty for someone who, “through minor recklessness, causes the death of another”, is a fine. The judge confirmed in a recent court document that misdemeanour charges would be pursued. But it remains to be seen how the nephews of the victim, who have brought a private prosecution, will respond.

consciousness, after opening the front door without first checking who was knocking. The attacker then got inside and stole her mobile phone as well as her bag, containing €500, said the victim, who needed stitches for an injury sustained during the attack.

Guardia officers sniff out marijuana drug-growers

GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested five people in their latest investigation into the illegal cultivation of marijuana in Almeria province.

The detention of two people, aged 28 and 47 respectively, on charges of crimes against public health and defrauding the power supply, followed the discovery of two, indoor marijuana plantations in Gador.

Officers seized 426 marijuana plants from two properties, which were identified by the drug’s strong smell, emanating from inside, as well as the enormous electricity consumption. In a separate operation in Berja, also in Almeria, a further three arrests were made after the Guardia searched six apartments in two blocks, and found more than 1,000 marijuana plants, as well as six, illegal, electricity connections.

JOSEPH Lindsay, part of a major crime gang, was captured after leaving DNA traces on elastic bands, used to bundle up money, found hidden in a lorry.

He was traced to Tenerife by Spanish police, and brought back to Scotland to face justice. Lindsay, formerly of Blantyre, Lanarkshire, admitted breaching proceeds of crime legislation, by agreeing with others to conceal and disguise criminal property in 2015, between 25th August and 23rd December, and on 30th January 2017. Edinburgh High Court heard that in January 2017, police searched an East Kilbride industrial unit and found a lorry with a hiding place, containing cash in plastic tubs. One of the tubs, which held £95,010, was later examined forensically, and Advocate Depute Lindsey Dalziel, a specialised lawyer, told the court: “DNA matching that of Joseph Lindsay was recovered from elastic bands, which were wrapped around the money.” A European Arrest Warrant was issued for Lindsay, who was detained by the Guardia Civil last December in Tenerife, and then handed

over to Scottish police. Ms Dalziel said the case arose out of a police investigation into an organised Scottish crime group (OCG), known to use violence and guns to enforce their activities. “The OCG are the most sophisticated group encoun-

tered by Police Scotland,” she said. “Their operation centres on the importation of vast quantities of controlled drugs, and their role is as wholesalers to other, organised, crime groups. “They are at the top of the chain in terms of drugs

transactions in Scotland and the United Kingdom as a whole.” Prosecutor Ms Dalziel, who said the criminal gang used industrial premises and vehicles through fake identities, added: “The sums of money involved in financing these vehicles and premises are substantial. The accused, Joseph Lindsay, is a member of the OCG and was seen on several occasions, meeting with other members.” During their search of the East Kilbride industrial unit, police found a flatbed lorry, complete with a hiding place for large sums of cash, along with registration documents and keys, which had been obtained fraudulently. The prosecutor said: “Cash recovered in the lorry was packaged and labelled in a manner similar to the method used to package other consignments of cash, controlled by the OCG. She told the court: “The use of

15 CW

purpose-built concealments in vehicles, and in buildings, has been a feature of many criminal enterprises, organised and controlled by the OCG.” Defence solicitor advocate Graeme Brown told the court that Lindsay had consented to his extradition from Tenerife after being detained. He was brought back by Scottish police officers on 10th January. Mr Brown told the judge, Lord Beckett, that Lindsay had, previously, never served a prison sentence. The judge remanded Lindsay in custody and called for a background report on him, ahead of sentencing. Lindsay was served with papers to begin confiscation proceedings against him, in a bid to seize crime profits. In January, Lindsay was handcuffed and flown back to Scotland on a packed Ryanair flight. He was escorted by police guards on the five-hour flight, after his extradition from Tenerife. The following day, he appeared in court charged with a six-year campaign of “serious organised crime”, believed to have taken place across the world. He was also accused of directing others to commit offences, aggravated by a connection with serious organised crime, between December 2011 and January 2018.

94 people drowned in Spain last month The RFESS has launched its ‘halt drownings’ campaign

Boozy mum’s home and dry

A TOTAL of 94 people drowned in Spain, in the first month of summer, which was a 30% increase from July last year.

In that period, 60 deaths were recorded, according to the Royal Spanish Federation of Lifeguards and Rescue (RFESS). Federation President Isabel Garcia Sanz said: “A variety of factors caused the increase, but what’s important is that

70% of deaths occurred in areas where there were no lifeguards. “If you are going swimming in places without supervision, you must make sure there are people around who can help you in an emergency.” Ms Garcia also urged that beachgoers should never dive, head-first, into waters they’re not familiar with. She said no one should swim on beaches displaying a red flag, adding: “These indicate that swimming is forbidden.”

Overall, the number of deaths by drowning has reached 232 this year alone. The highest number of fatalities were recorded in the Valencian Community and Catalonia, followed by Castilla y Leon, Andalusia, Galicia, the Canary Islands and Murcia. Over half of those who died in July were aged between 45 and 74, and 50% of deaths happened at beaches, the remainder occurring in rivers, swimming pools, lakes and reservoirs.

A BOOZED-UP mother, whose three kids were taken into care before the family’s flight from Gibraltar last week, has been fined a total of £450.

She and her husband were charged with being drunk in charge of children, in Gibraltar International Airport. Police were called, after the 53-year-old woman had fallen over in the departure lounge. Charges against her husband, 54, were dropped after the pair appeared in Court last Friday. But the wife received a £250 fine after she admitted being drunk, and another £200 for damage to property. Police officers had previously removed the children from the tanked-up couple and transferred them to social services. However, the parents and their children were allowed to return home, following the hearing.

Dead baby found in a dumpster bin

POLICE are treating as murder the discovery of a new-born baby, found dead in a Gijon rubbish container in the Nuevo Roces neighbourhood of Asturias.

A man rummaging through the dumpster bin at 3am last Friday made the discovery, say National Police. A forensic team attended the site, and, two days later, a post-mortem examination revealed that the child had been killed shortly after birth, according to media reports. According to the newspaper ‘El

Comercio’, the baby had suffered cuts, and also had internal injuries, which affected internal organs. Officers have asked all hospitals in the area to let the police know if any woman enters with symptoms of having recently given birth. Complications that could lead to the mother’s admission may include infections, or internal bleeding. Police say that the baby was born alive, and are assuming that the child was not born in a hospital. They also believe that he had been in the bin for a few hours only, since the man who found him had searched through the same bin the previous afternoon.

SPAIN is still without a government, but leftwing independent party Podemos has called for the PSOE socialists to start negotiating seriously and immediately. The message to the deposed ruling party is not to leave it until September, when its leader, Pedro Sánchez, would have another chance at becoming invested as Prime Minister. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias (pictured), says a fresh general election “is not an option”. Yet one would be necessary if a September investiture failed, or Sánchez decided not to go for it. August is normally when MPs, along with a large chunk of Spain, take their annual leave, usually for the whole month. But Irene Montero, wife of Iglesias and second-incommand (pictured with her husband), says: “No holiday is worth leaving talks until the start of September” That, she adds, would only give the two parties 23 days to attempt to form a government. “So please, just

HUGE-HEARTED athletes dug deep into their reserves to complete the Trifitmarbella Big Challenge last weekend. They raised thousands of euros to help buy prosthetics for amputee Sarah Almagro Vallejo, in association with the Somos Tu Ola charity. At just 17, Sarah, from Marbella, became ill with bacterial meningitis infection, and, later, sepsis, which resulted in the life-saving amputation of her hands and feet. Her kidney was also damaged, and she is now on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. Moved by her story, local

athletes Christopher Grenfell and Jansen Riley, with the support of fellow sportsmen, pledged to complete the ultimate in sporting endurance challenges: the 24-hour, ironman, ultratriathlon. This involved an amazing 5km swim from the Mediterranean beaches of Marbella, from Hippopotamus Beach to Marbella Cable Beach. It was followed immediately by 200km of undulating cycling, with big climbs from the Marbella Arch to the historic Granada City Centre, rounding off with a 50km run up the highest tarmac road in Europe, to Pico Veleta, which towers over Granada Province. Christopher, appealing for support prior to the mammoth

challenge, said: “As a bright, sporty girl, Sarah remains confident of the future, and I believe that, with your help, we can make her future life a bit easier. Thanking you in advance.” His words certainly didn’t fall on deaf ears because a total of €4,330-plus was raised, thanks to the mind-blowing efforts of his gallant team. Christopher added: “With support and fund-raising, which means help from you all, Sarah will have the medical care and facilities she needs, to enable her to make a bright and positive future for herself. “It also gives her parents, family and friends the support they need, to watch Sarah develop the life she deserves.”

with no red lines. “We hope that negotiations can now start seriously, with all options possible, but it is up to the PSOE to take the lead and decide whom it wants as its partners in government.” She added: “Pedro Sánchez continues to try to reach out to the right-wing, threatens a second election, and prepares to enter into selfcriticism. “In 80 days, since the 26th May general election, he has managed only to get a supporting vote from one MP outside his party, yet this is everyone else’s fault… especially, apparently, Pablo Iglesias.” The Podemos leader has already warned Sánchez that if he decided to call a new election, “he would never become President”. More than 200 celebrities, from the world of arts, signed an open letter to Sánchez and the PSOE, ahead of the investiture, urging them to form a coalition with Podemos as soon as possible. Failure to do so, they said, could result in a right-wing government, which would probably include far-right party Vox as part of a coalition, or at least, as allies.

A holiday boy of five dies, after collapsing

A FIVE-YEAR-OLD British boy, on holiday with his family in Magaluf, died after becoming violently ill at the four-star Sol Barbados hotel. Medics from the emergency services, called after the youngster began vomiting before collapsing and suffering a cardiac arrest, were able resuscitate him using CPR, before transferring him to hospital.

However, officials confirmed that the boy died the same day at Palma’s Son Espases Hospital, having arrived in a “critical condition”. The boy had been complaining of stomach pains, and he vomited before collapsing, according to Mallorca paper Cronica Balear. Officials have not confirmed whether or not a routine court investigation has been launched, which would be normal practice after the death of a child.

WITH so many options for UK pensions, it can be difficult to know what to do. While any financial transaction brings a degree of risk, pensions are especially valuable, so making the wrong decision can be disastrous. This is an area where quality, expert advice is vital. These tips can help you avoid costly mistakes and establish the right pensions approach for you. 1. Check your pension adviser is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) Regulated financial companies must meet certain standards and act in the best interests of clients. While taking regulated advice is compulsory for people looking to transfer “final-salary” pension benefits worth £30,000+ a year, the FCA recommends it for anyone considering their pension options. A simple online search of a provider’s full name plus “FCA” should link to their record in the Financial Services Register.

Pensions advice in Spain: six tips for getting it right

2. Consider all available options Many expatriates transfer UK pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), to unlock benefits such as currency and estate-planning flexibility. However, a QROPS will not suit everyone, and is not always the most tax-efficient solution. Pension funds can, potentially, be restructured in arrangements that provide better tax benefits for Spanish residents, so explore your options. 3. Don’t overlook cross-border tax issues Spanish income-tax rates for pensions vary regionally between 19% and 48%. While UK-based pension advisers may have some understanding of Spanish taxation, they are unlikely to have the full expertise to navigate issues such as Spanish succession, wealth and income-tax mitigation, in the context of your overall situation. This can lead to a much higher tax bill than necessary, for you and your heirs. A locally-based, UK-regulated adviser is best placed to establish the most tax-

efficient approach for your particular circumstances and goals. 4. Beware of pension scams and unregulated investments Be extremely cautious of advice from a company that has cold-called you, and never sign anything under pressure. Be especially wary of claims of unusually high or guaranteed returns, and opportunities to access pensions before the age of 55. Once you transfer, it is too late; you could lose some, or even all, of your funds, and face a large, UK tax bill, as well as penalty fees. Also, note that many companies offering pension services are unregulated, offering unprotected investments that risk losing

your money without compensation. 5. Research other people’s experiences Even amongst regulated providers, check for quality. Testimonials, particularly from people you trust, can indicate a provider is meeting the needs and expectations of their clients. Look for consumer reviews, ask around your local community, and follow up references, where possible. Be mindful, however, that other people’s situations might be quite different from yours. What works for them, may not necessarily work for you. 6. Look at the whole picture Pensions should form just part of your overall, financial plan. Your adviser should look at

your pensions in the context of your unique circumstances, risk appetite and wider situation, including residency, your other assets, tax and estate planning, to help secure the best outcome for you and your family. While you should take the time to get your pensions approach right, keep the Brexit countdown in mind. With many predicting that the UK could introduce tax penalties on overseas transfers, and limit how expatriates in the EU can access their UK pensions, post-Brexit, now is the time to review how to best secure a prosperous retirement in Spain. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Spanish mortgages are getting cheaper HOMEOWNERS with a mortgage, having its annual review this week, will see their monthly payments drop again, now that the Euribor was set to end July at a new, historic low.

The Eurozone interest rate, upon which mortgages in Spain are based, will end the month on -0.282%, breaking the record low set in March 2018 of -0.191%. From then, until March this year, the Euribor continued to rise, but only slightly, and remained in negative figures. It has now been in negative for 41 consecutive months, and no interest rate rise has been put into place since 2011. Last year, Spain’s homeowners were, in many cases, starting to consider

switching to fixed-rate mortgages, because of the tiny but steady rise in the Eurozone interest rate, which experts had been warning of for some time. Many feared it would rocket to its highest-ever level, which was 5.393%,

achieved in July 2008. But the Central European Bank (BCE) has never introduced a sharp hike, and has long been keeping rates down to aid growth in the common currency area. Its chairman, Mario Draghi, had been talking about a

possible slight increase after the summer. But in March, he announced that there would be no plans to do so until at least the year 2020, because of a weakening in the Eurozone economy. Some of the daily rates seen in July were fairly drastic

drops: on the 24th, it fell to -0.321%, remaining below -0.3% for seven days. It has not risen to 0% since February 2016, when it first fell into negative figures. And this time last year, the Euribor closed July on -0.18%, meaning mortgages set for their annual revision now will see a saving of approximately €4.50 a month, based on a €100,000 loan over a 25-year term. A figure-and-loan term such as this would, typically, involve monthly repayments last July of €368.74, but a review of it this month would see this drop to €364.24. But even if the Euribor shows signs of rising, mortgageholders in Spain need not rush to apply a fixed rate because here, repayments are adjusted annually. This means that if the Euribor starts to rise, homeowners have a full 12 months between reviews to decide what to do.

Tracey lost both her parents as a young woman, and getting to know Christian has given her the opportunity to become part of a family again. She has also developed a close relationship with his adoptive parents Janis and Michael who look on her as a daughter, but sadly embracing this new family means sharing not only the good times but also the bad ones; Janis and Michael have both been diagnosed with cancer and the family are bracing themselves for a difficult future. Our third story follows 81-year-old Pauline Wood as she prepares for her wedding day. Pauline spent a lifetime searching for her lost brother Colin, and dreamed he would be the one to give her away on her big day. Now that dream is finally coming true.

Interior Design Masters

Wednesday 14th August, BBC2, 20.00

Ten talented up-and-coming interior designers are taking part in the biggest design challenge of their lives. Arriving at a design studio in East London they are welcomed by series presenter Fearne Cotton. Awaiting for them in her design studio is Former Editor in Chief of Elle Decoration magazine, Michelle Ogundehin. Highly regarded in the design industry, Michelle is a tough judge and someone who all the designers will be keen to impress. Competing to win the ultimate prize - a commercial contract to design a bar at one of London’s top hotels - this is a life-changing opportunity. Each week Michelle sets them a different commercial design challenge, then - alongside some big-name industry guest judges - scrutinizes their designs. Alongside the guest judge, she will eliminate one designer each week, jeopardising their dreams of making a name for themselves in the fiercely competitive design world. This week Michelle is joined by internationally renowned fashion designer turned interiors specialist Matthew Williamson. A lover of bright colours and bold patterns, Matthew brings his unique take on what makes great design. For their first big commercial challenge the designers must redesign two show homes. Working in two teams of five, they are each given a different room to design within the show home. At the same time they must work with their team to deliver a cohesive home that impresses the judges and is accessible to prospective buyers. With two days to transform the bland show homes, the designers set off in their teams to Northumberland, the location for the first challenge. With lots of contrasting design styles between them, it doesn’t take long for the stronger personalities to make themselves and their design styles known. Compromise comes more easily to some than others, as the designers attempt to work together and adjust their designs to suit the brief.

The Best Little Prison In Britain?

This episode focuses on Craig, who describes himself as an ‘Ordinary Decent Criminal’ and despite facing a ten-year stretch is representing himself at trial, prison shop manager George ‘Stores’, whose shopping skills are stretched when asked for some ‘butt-enhancing’ jeans, and head of security Margo’s latest clampdown on contraband. Craig, who is on his seventh sentence at the island’s prison, is lining up to represent himself at his trial - as he believes he acted in self-defence. But will his enhanced status as a well-behaved prisoner and his smart new suit help convince the jury he is innocent? He says: “So I’m in for knife crime, I was in a fight with a bloke who had a knife and I managed to get it off him and stabbed him with it three times in self defence. I stood up for myself and fought back.” Prisoner Karl enters the jail having just been subdued by the police using a Taser electric shock weapon, and says: “The police had a report that I had a knife – it was my vape stick… It’s the first time I’ve been Tasered - not as bad as I thought it would be.”

England and Wales begin their build-up towards next month’s World Cup with the first of a series of friendlies for both countries this summer. Six Nations Grand Slam winners Wales overcame a half-time deficit to triumph 21-13 at the Principality Stadium when the sides last met in February, a result that ended England’s hopes of lifting the trophy. John Inverdale and Jeremy Guscott present all the highlights from Twickenham with commentary from Sara Orchard and Brian Moore.

A “T” total experience! Hola again, to all you lovely readers, from all of us here at Keddy’s Entertainment. We so enjoy interviewing our talented artistes, on this glorious island of Tenerife.

This month, we caught up with Scotty T of T Total Experience, to find out what spurred him on to pursue his career. “I was in my last year of primary school,” he recalled. “It was that time of year where plans for the annual school play were developing. Normally, parts were just handed out. However, this time, they decided to hold on-the-spot auditions. “There was no time to prepare, and it was all spur of the moment. We could either read a section of something, or sing! I don’t know why, but the idea came into my head to sing Apologise, by One Republic. I had never even rehearsed it before. Afterwards, my classmates came up to me and were saying how good I was. “I used to go to an afterschool club. It had a games console, with a karaoke video game called Singstar. It was a plug-in microphone instead of a controller, and I picked the song I Want You Back, by The Jackson 5. People started to encourage me to sing, even more. “That’s when I went home and mentioned it to my parents. My dad has been an entertainer for many years, and I asked if I could have a go on his setup. I sang Ben, by Michael Jackson. It was then that my parents saw I had some good tones and true potential.” Scotty’s family decided to move to Tenerife in the summer, just after he finished his final year at primary school, in the UK. Five years ago, when he was 17, and just before he turned professional, he had the opportunity to become an apprentice of sorts, to the talented David Ormond, aka our famous Tenerife drag star, Miss Crystal Star, proprietor of Crystals Palace on The Patch

in Las Americas. His brother Adam managed the bar. “I would sometimes play, almost as a support act. David would let me perform a short spot, early evening, while Miss Crystal was getting ready. It really helped me to grow as a performer, and I gained a lot of experience from it. “I sing anything from soul classics to modern tunes. I’m also working on a ‘britop’ show that will be available soon. I like to sing to please the crowd, and try my best to accommodate everyone. I also incorporate some other genres, such as hip-hop and rap. “When I was six years old, I can remember hearing Eminem’s Marshall Mathers LP. To this day, I still think it is one of the best albums ever - a true, iconic masterpiece! He is one of my idols, and I think he is why I can rap today. And, in my opinion,

he is the reason a lot of other people can, too! “Ed Sheeran is another artiste whose music I love. He is huge all around the world, yet so down to earth. I admire him for being so grounded. That’s how I would want to be, if ever I were fortunate enough to become so famous!” “I’m very much a proper geek, to be honest! I enjoy football, and have started, recently, playing five-a-side games, twice a week. I like video games and watching Netflix, and I don’t go out that much. I don’t even drink. I’m probably out of place on this island, where most people like to party! “I began working on my own music, about three years ago, and I used to go by the name, The Scotty T Show. I released an EP called Reflections, comprising five tracks that I’m pretty satisfied with. Unfortunately, I fell out of love with The Scotty T Show, so I recently changed my name to Scotty T. “I feel there is a difference between Scotty T the entertainer, and Scotty T the songwriter. I wanted a name that, I believe, fits my music and vibe a little better. So I came up with Goodnight Clementine. You can find my most recent single, Friend, on most music platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music and Google Play, and many more, under the name Goodnight Clementine.” So what more do we all expect to hear and see from Scotty T and Goodnight Clementine, in the future? “I’m planning to release a couple more Goodnight Clementine singles soon, and, in a couple of months, my first album. As for Scotty T, I’ll carry on entertaining the crowds. I want to travel more, and keep doing the things I love, with the people I love.” Well, that’s a sentiment we at Keddy’s Entertainment certainly endorse. We all wish Scotty T every success, and lots of happy days in the future! To find out more about the world of Keddy’s Entertainment, check out our Facebook page @ keddysentertainmentpage.

Brit teen bottles bouncer while ‘defending’ himself Anti-tourism group pulling no punches

SHOCKING footage has emerged of an anti-tourism group, slashing the tyres and smashing the windscreens of cars, hired by holidaymakers.

A BRITISH teen has been accused of bottling a bouncer so badly that he needed 50 stitches in hospital.

The 19-year-old, who was partying in Magaluf, allegedly attacked the Lithuanian man after being refused entry to a club. A row broke out after the youngster wasn’t allowed back in, prompting him to smash a bottle on a terrace table, before, allegedly, plunging into the man’s face. The bouncer was rushed to Palma’s Son Espases hospital, while the Brit was arrested on attempted homicide charges. However, the teenager was told in court that he would,

instead, be charged with wounding with a dangerous weapon. The shocking incident occurred at 6am last Sunday, in Carrer Punta Ballena, near an advanced Guardia Civil post. A judge told him he would be released if he could find bail money of €15,000, although it is unclear whether is able to

compile that sum. A Guardia Civil spokesperson said: “A British man was arrested on Sunday following an incident involving another man outside an establishment in Punta Ballena.” Investigators are believed to have CCTV footage of the assault, in which it is thought that the Brit has claimed it was a self-defence attack.

The “Arran” group is behind the video, in which it targets two different rented vehicles, and also attacks them with spray paint. A crane was even forced to remove one of the cars in Calle Pablo Iglesias, in Mallorca capital Palma, after its bonnet was smashed. The film is linked to the Catalan independence movement with the phrase “Paises Catalanes”, and is sound-tracked by Mungo

Jerry’s “In The Summertime” hit of 1970. At the beginning of the video, the activists claim: “Over 100,000 rental cars on the Balearic island cause saturation, unsustainability and pollution.” One online critic branded Arran “scum”, and added: “It always uses violence against what it doesn’t like.” Accompanying this summer’s campaign against mass tourism is a series of Arran posters, which read: “Tourism kills Mallorca.”, featuring a skull-and-crossbones, made from selfie sticks. Alongside flyposting and graffiti, the group have also been known to pelt holiday buses with eggs, and storm restaurants and squares, violently, with smoke bombs.

Festival-watcher gored to death by young bull

AN unnamed man, aged 26, died at a Spanish festival after being knocked to the ground and gored by a young bull, as he stood near some steps at the El Pinós fiesta in Alicante.

The animal, which had been released into the square last Thursday, then thrust its horns into the victim’s leg, causing an eight-inch gash to his calf. The stunned man, from the town of Petrer, was helped to his feet and given emergency medical treatment from onsite doctors, before being rushed to Elda Hospital. But the injury had affected a leg artery, and, tragically, he bled to death while on the operating table. Town Hall officials held a minute’s silence the next morning, and the festival

that day was cancelled out of respect. El Pinós Mayor Lázaro Azorín said he was “heartbroken”, and added: “I wish to convey my most sincere condolences to the young man’s family at this difficult time.” A funeral for the man, from the town of Petrer, was held last Sunday, just before 6pm. Event organiser Francisco Albert said he was a professional at the festival and had known the risks involved when working with bulls. He told the Metro: “He certainly wasn’t a novice. The first time the animal got him, nothing happened, but the second time it trapped him against the steps, and that’s when it gored him. “It affected an artery and he died on the operating table at hospital, after receiving emergency medical attention from doctors here.”

Fined up to €500, if you buy from the ‘looky looky’ men

A HUGE socialmedia campaign has been launched in Barcelona to combat illegal street-vending, with buyers of “looky looky” men’s goods facing fines of up to €500.

Jaume Collboni, first Deputy Mayor of the city, announced the campaign, claiming it was not about making money. “It’s to warn

and to raise awareness,” he said. “It is a positive campaign. We do not want sanctions, but to give information.” His message will be spread in Catalan, Spanish, English and French, and the campaign against “blanket street vending” will run until the end of September. You’ll see it through socialmedia networks and Internet sites, as well on the Metro, buses, in shops, hotels and shelters in Port Olímpic, among others.

The City Council also plans to distribute 28,000 postcards at shops and commercial establishments in the city, with this message: “Thankyou for purchasing this trade! In Barcelona, the legal purchase makes the city.” In addition, 6,100 posters will be handed out to traders, restaurants and hotels, pointing out that illegal sales in public places are not allowed, and warning of potential fines for those who buy the goods.

An identical penalty will apply to those who get rid of their household waste in areas other than where the bins are provided. More than 13 fines have already been doled out in the target areas of Mijas Pueblo, La Cala de Mijas

and Mijas Costa. Officers are now patrolling the streets of the areas most affected by garbage, to act as a deterrent. The Mijas Council plans to launch an information campaign to raise awareness of the correct usage of bins.

Rubbish-dumping will now cost a €3,000 fine POLICE can now hand out €3,000 fines to those not disposing of their household rubbish correctly, in the Malaga municipality of Mijas.

The campaign was launched in the town last week, in a bid to tackle its terrible household-waste problem, after an “agreement” was signed, ahead of the new Council being sworn in. The €3,000 fine will penalise people who deposit toxic, hazardous or special urban waste, in normal containers. Meanwhile a €1,500 fine will be handed out to those who fly-tip and block traffic, or cause a public-health risk.

€200 reward, for Poppy’s return

Cats Welfare News

POPPY has been missing from Palm Mar for nearly two weeks. Her owners are now very concerned because she is very shy, and it’s just not like her to be away from home. She is microchipped, and wearing a red collar with the name “Elvis”, because she lost her tag. Please WhatsApp Cats Welfare on 711 004 155, or send a private message on their Facebook page, if you have any information. Adoption We have several gorgeous

kittens available for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside for them

to frolic to their hearts’ content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as

to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, or Linda (English) on 711 004 155, if you would like to enquire about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Please vaccinate! We would like to encourage everyone to vaccinate their cats and dogs. Kittens and puppies are particularly vulnerable to disease, and there are many viruses doing the rounds, at this time of year. They can be vaccinated from only two months old. Clothes required We are appealing, please, for ladies’ dresses and tops. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. We need you! Fostering kittens is very rewarding, watching them growing and playing, feeding them and realising how dependent they are on you. It’s perfect for people who

don’t want a full-time cat of their own. We are looking for foster carers, to look after bottlefeeders and weaners, as well as big kittens. You would need to be able to drive, and have somewhere safe for them. All food and litter, bedding, litter trays etc. will be supplied, and any vet bills will be paid by us. Please help us to help the kittens in need. Cats Welfare arrange the adoptions, once the kittens are ready. Please send us a Facebook private message, if you are interested. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Meet Lucia (Lucy)

THIS playful girl is approximately three years old. She is a mixed breed, but we believe she has some boxer in her. She is came to the rescue centre after being found wandering in Las Zocas. She could hardly walk, and both her back legs were damaged. With lots of care, and treatment from our vet, she is now fully re-

covered. She is full of fun and loves to play, especially fetch. She’s good with other dogs, but a little nervous with new people. She will need patience and love, but we are certain she will make a wonderful pet. Please contact Elaine on 678 015 653, if you are able to offer Lucy a foster, or permanent, home.

Meet Kahl

K9 Animal News

HOW cute is that face? Doesn’t he look like a good boy? That’s because that is exactly what he is. For Game of Thrones’ fans, you will know where his name came from.

Kahl’s story didn’t have a happy beginning. One Sunday morning, a few months ago, Fiona was driving up to start her day at K9. As she pulled up she noticed a bag of food and a red blanket outside. As she was getting out of the car, she noticed a little pair of eyes looking at her from behind the bench. Another abandoned puppy. She spoke calmly to him, and, within a few seconds, he realised she was there to look after him, and he showered her with kisses and affection. He had been left outside the night before, not even tied up, and just left to wander around. For some reason,

he stayed near his blanket. Fiona named him Kahl, and he became loved instantly by everyone at K9. He was still a puppy, but he was so loving, and trusted everyone who met him. He still is. He has grown now, as puppies do, and is so willing to learn new things. He has been going to a dog-training class every week, and does so well, showing how clever he can be, and how well he can get on with other dogs. He loves to play and run around, and, for a dog of his age and size, this is what he needs. All the people who come to K9 and meet Kahl have instant smiles on their faces. He is such a sweet boy, and everyone falls in love with him. He currently shares with an older male dog, Mufasa, who is always a very sweet, obedient boy, and they are well matched. With Kahl being younger, he does demand more play time, but Mufasa remains very patient him, even if he’s not in the mood to play.

Go nuts for pistachios! Did you know that pistachios, which are considered to be nuts, are actually seeds? When eaten in moderation, pistachios can promote weight loss, and even improve your blood-glucose levels. Health benefits Pistachios come from the fruits of a desert plant called Pistacia vera. These nutrient-rich green nuts are full of antioxidants, fibre and protein. Like other nuts and seeds, pistachios contain healthy fats, like oleic and linoleic acid, that reduce inflammation and lower your risk of heart disease. Pistachios are full of antioxidants such as phytosterols, xanthophylls and gamma-tocopherol (a form of Vitamin E). These antioxidants possess anti-cancer, anti-ageing,

and anti-inflammatory properties. Pistachios contain other vitamins and minerals, such as: *Copper *Manganese *Phosphorus *Potassium *Thiamin *Vitamin B6 Your body needs Vitamin B6 for various functions, such as blood-sugar regulation and the formation of haemoglobin, molecules that carry oxygen in red blood cells. These green nuts are also full of potassium. In fact, an ounce of pistachios has more potassium than half a large banana. Pistachios can help you feel fuller for longer periods. These nuts contain at least three

grams of fibre, six grams of protein, and 13 grams of fat, per serving. Pistachios can improve your blood pressure by enhancing endothelial function. The endothelium is a thin membrane that lines the inside of your heart and blood vessels. In addition, pistachios can improve blood-glucose levels, which can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. Pistachios are also good for your gut. Eat these nuts to boost the number of beneficial bacteria in your gut that produce butyrate, an anti-inflammatory fatty acid. Butyrate helps protect you from various health problems, like obesity or autoimmune disorders. Last, but not least, pistachios help prevent ocular diseases.

Consuming pistachios can lower your risk of conditions such as cataracts or macular degeneration. This is due to their high concentration of two, eye-friendly carotenoids: lutein and zeaxanthin. Eat a handful of pistachios if you want to lose weight, or just want to munch on a healthy snack. Like other types of healthy foods, you must eat pistachios in moderation to reap their health benefits. An average serving is made up of 49 kernels, or at least an ounce of unshelled nuts. You can eat pistachios in various ways: *Add them to salads *Add them to a breakfast of granola and fruits *Crush them and use them as a topping on your favourite fish or meat dish

Lifestyle

By Val Sainsbury OBESITY and depression are global-health problems. According to the World Health Organisation, an escalating global epidemic of obesity and being overweight is taking over many countries.

Depression, on the other hand, continues to be the leading cause of disability, worldwide. While these diseases affect different aspects of health, several studies have suggested that there is a link between them. In a recent article, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, researchers from the University of Exeter in the UK, and the University of South Australia (UniSA) Cancer Research Institute, show that the psychological impact of obesity, not

www.canarianweekly.com 9th August 2019 - 22nd August 2019

That extra weight can get you down associated diseases, causes depression in both men and women. For their study, the researchers gathered genetic data from the UK Biobank, a study conducted from 2006 to 2010, that involved 500,000 individuals aged 37 to 73 years. The researchers looked at data from 48,000 people with depression, and compared them with medical and genetic data from 290,000 people, born between 1938 and 1971, who served as controls. The

researchers tested for a causal relationship between depression and having a higher body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of body fat, based on height and weight, and is one of the many tools used to assess a person’s health risks. A BMI greater than 30 kilograms per square metre is associated with obesity. “We separated the psychological component of obesity from the impact of obesity-related health

Nowadays, people are generally good about recycling in their homes, as standard practice, but this goes by the wayside on holiday. The simple reason is that people don’t know how to recycle abroad, because each country has different recycling policies. In Spain, homes do not have individual bins for refuse collection. Instead, there are large, communal bins in the nearby vicinity. The bilingual English and Spanish Recycling in Spain poster shows the colourcoded, recycling bins in Spain and what typical “holiday” waste goes in what bin. The Recycling in Spain poster http://holidayfootprint. com/recycling-in-spain/ has been designed to tackle holiday-makers’ lack of understanding about how to recycle there. It is available to download, free, for owners and agents to display in the holiday rental properties. Spain-Holiday.com is one company in Spain

endorsing Holiday Footprint’s sustainable campaigns, including the new Recycling in Spain drive. “Encouraging our owners and agents to print and display the Recycling in Spain poster may seem like a small step towards sustainable tourism,” said Jannich Petersen, CEO of Spain-Holiday.com “But on a national level, with nearly 20,000 properties for rent in mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands, we feel it can make a significant impact.” Holiday-rental owners and agents, as well as holiday-makers, can visit the HolidayFootprint.com website to find out more about the various, sustainable, tourism initiatives, including the Recycling in Spain poster to download, and its other schemes, such as the Food Bank Drive, which focuses on food waste. All sustainable tools for this industry can be downloaded from the website, and, for further information, contact info@holidayfootprint.com

problems, using genes associated with higher body mass index (BMI), but with lower risk of diseases like diabetes,” explained Elina Hypponen, a professor at UniSA who co-led the study. The researchers reported that a higher BMI is strongly associated with an increased risk of depression, particularly in women. According to Hypponen, genes that are linked to higher BMI, but not to other diseases, were just as strongly associated with depression as genes associated with higher BMI and diabetes. This implies that being overweight causes depression, and health issues related to obesity have nothing to do with it. Additionally, this association is more evident in women than in men. The researchers also explored the relationship between childhood BMI and the development of depression,

later in life. They asked the participants about their perceived body size when they were 10 years old, and found that men and women who perceived themselves as plump at that age, had higher odds of reporting depression when they became adults. Similarly, men and women who perceived themselves as thinner than average were also more prone to depression later in life, than those who reported being of average weight. “The current global-obesity epidemic is very concerning,” said Hypponen. “Alongside depression, the two are estimated to cost the global community trillions of dollars each year. “Our research shows that being overweight doesn’t just increase the risks of chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular disease; it can also lead to depression.”

How to recycle abroad, when you’re on holiday A HUGE number of companies in the travel and tourism industry have made positive changes towards reducing single-use plastic this summer, as well as local, communitydriven initiatives such as beach cleans in tourist areas.

A new campaign, aimed at encouraging holidaymakers in self-catering accommodation in Spain to recycle their household waste, has been launched by HolidayFootprint.com It is an informative website, dedicated to providing free, useful tools, as well as practical information about good, sustainable practices in the holiday-rental industry. A recent survey on recycling in the industry showed that just 57.1% of holiday-rental owners offer recycling facilities.

CD Tenerife

CDT supporters remain loyal FOLLOWING a 3-0 defeat by Cultural Leonesa, Tenerife continued their pre-season campaign with a visit to Celta Vigo, a La Liga side who just avoided relegation last season.

They provided a stern test for new coach Aritz López Garai’s men. But, in all fairness, Celta started with a team of substitutes and were dominated for 70 minutes by opponents who had the ability to score, but failed to seize their opportunities. The first chance fell to Celta in the 13th minute, but Lucas Olaza shot wide, and their luck went from bad to worse with an injury to left-back David Juncá. Tenerife came out strongly and pressed forward, taking advantage of the weakened opposition, particularly down the flanks. They put in several dangerous crosses for Celta keeper Rubén Blanco to contend with, but Alberto headed over the bar, and former Celta player Naranjo’s shot was deflected for a corner by a defender. At this point, Celta were in a blur, and after 23 minutes, Rubén

RC Celta Vigo 0 CD Tenerife 1 Blanco fouled Naranjo in the area, which should have led to a penalty, but didn’t! Tenerife continued to dominate, and, after 30 minutes, Suso Santana had the clearest chance, from a good Luis Pérez cross. But it was cleared, badly, only for Suso to shoot over the bar. The script continued at the start of the second half, with Tenerife exploiting the Pérez runs down the right wing. In the 54th minute, they had an indirect free-kick on the edge of the area, taken by Naranjo, but deflected to safety by Iván Villar.

Shortly after, though, CDT made the breakthrough. The move started with a good run and cross by Pérez, and Malbasic was perfectly placed to slot the ball home easily, to make visiting Tenerife ahead after 64 minutes. Celta, lacking ideas and intensity, didn’t have a leader in the centre of the pitch, and the goal forced their coach, Escribá, to make changes. He brought on first-team players Lobotka, Brais Méndez and Santi Mina, and saw an improvement over the last 30 minutes.

Lauti had two good chances in a minute to equalise, but keeper Dani Hernández saved both efforts well. The final whistle signified Celta’s first preseason defeat, in a

game for what it was, a friendly. But it proved successful for Tenerife, against far better opposition than they had encountered in the run-up to the new season.

A really great mix of Look in at The Loch-In! cocktails and sport!

THE Winchester Sports Bar and Restaurant on Fanabe beach, overlooking the sea, has been one of the biggest sports bars in Tenerife, for over 10 years.

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

THE Loch-In is situated on the bottom square in San Blas, Golf del Sur. It was previously called Bar 180.

This establishment has a good reputation for being a friendly, local bar with lots of character and good laughs, and we are not talking about their resident darts team! The Loch-In shows all the sport you need, either on the indoor televisions, or those outside on the terrace. For all this season’s football matches, and rugby, golf, cricket, horse racing and F1, this is the place to be. You can watch all the major darts tournaments on the box, as well as follow the bar’s darts team, on a Friday evening. New to the bar is an array of popular Belgium beers for you to try, supplied by our dart’s-team sponsor, Transbelga. Special offers available this week are: John Smiths €2.50, Strawberry Gin €2.50, available all day, and, from 11pm until 1am, a selection of popular bottled beers at €1.50. So, if you are on the Golf, or visiting the area, pop in and see Lynn and her gang, for a good old Scottish welcome and a “wee dram”!

Crash in Tour of Poland sparks Lambrecht death

PROMISING Belgian rider Bjorg Lambrecht lost his life after a crash during the current Tour of Poland. The tragic 22-year-old Lotto-Soudal rider, who fell into a concrete culvert, was resuscitated at the scene, but died following surgery. In the same race, Spanish cyclist Luis Ángel Maté also suffered a serious fall, which left him needing 50 stitches in his head. He was in hospital overnight, following a crash which left him with a brain haemorrhage. Maté is understood to be recovering well, alongside his fellow Cofidis team-mate Filippo Fortin, who suffered four broken ribs in the same crash. A relieved Maté said: “The helmet saved my life. I lost a lot of blood and, most likely, I’ll have to stay for a couple of days, under observation.” The accident came just three weeks before the 35-year-old’s biggest race of the season, the Vuelta de España. In last year’s event, he held the “King of the Mountains” jersey from stage three until stage 16, before Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) took over.
