Continued from Front Thankfully, there were no casualties and people were allowed to return to their homes on Wednesday. The reactivated blaze stemmed from a fire, started accidentally a week earlier by a man welding, who was arrested and appeared in court. But he was released on a €25,000 bail. The wildfire advanced on two

fronts in a mountainous area of the island, close to Tejeda town, which was evacuated last week because of that earlier fire. With flames reaching as high as 50 metres (160ft), the battle to contain the two fires was complicated, and they also spread to the provinces of Valleseco, Moya, Galdar, Agaete, San Mateo and Artenara. Over 100 square kilometres of land are estimated to have

been destroyed, and 11 roads were closed, as experts claimed that a combination of high temperatures, strong winds and low humidity enabled the fires to spread. They had earlier been described as “unstoppable” by emergency crews, but Canarian Government President Angel Victor Torres said on Wednesday: “When people return to their homes, it means that we are overcoming the fire.”

He added: “It confirms that the Gran Canaria blaze is now, finally, in a stabilisation phase, after a complicated night and great work throughout Tuesday by the various emergency services, the results of which have allowed us to deliver this magnificent news.” But despite the good news, the fire’s official perimeter has now been assessed as being between 112-120 square kilometres, which is just under 8% of the total land mass of the island. Yet the most directly-affected area is now reckoned to be at least 10,000 hectares (equal to 10,000 football fields or 100sq/km) following the latest, official assessments. These estimates led directly to the announcement, late on Tuesday night, that the overwhelming majority of residents, who had been most at risk, could return safely to their homes. Specifically, residents in the communities of Madrelagua, Cuevecitas, La Caldereta, Altos de Lanzarote, El Prado and the town centre in the Valleseco municipality, were all authorised to return home, as well as residents of Fontanales and the Hoya del Cavadero in Moya, Piletas, Troy and the Valley de Agaet, along with the population centres of Las Arvejas, Chajunco, Las Cuevas.

And, with great relief, those with homes in Artenara, the most-endangered of all the villages, where up to 40 people were forced on Sunday night to take refuge in a Government-designated shelter in the town, as flames engulfed the surrounding hills. The President added: “We have moved from evacuations to relocations, and I insist that everyone remains patient, because entering burned zones still involves risks.” Federico Grillo, Gran Canaria Cabildo’s Chief Emergencies Co-ordinator, said: “The fire is within our extinguishing capacity, and we hope that, in one to two days, there will be no reactivations.”

However, he stressed that fire teams must continue to work intensely to avoid re-ignition, and, thus, ensure the safety of all the areas involved. As for the North Western summit pine forests of the Tamadaba Natural Park, Grillo said the level of severity in the areas affected by the fire had been much lower than expected. “But this does not mean there is no damage,” he stressed. “We must continue to be on alert because the danger has not passed.” This theme was repeated by Torres, who insisted: “We must finish the work to prevent this beast from being revived.” Throughout Tuesday, the air deployment discharged more than 1.6m litres of water across the affected areas; a task that continued on Wednesday, depending on the evolution of the fire. And 18 aircraft reinforced the land operations to extinguish the flames, once and for all. Throughout the night, 400 firefighters continued to work across the burn zone, with more than 200 working on the front lines of the fire. President Torres has maintained daily contact with Spain’s acting Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who, he says, has continuously monitored the emergency, and has highlighted “the important institutional solidarity” the Canary Islands have received at all times. Meanwhile, Margarita Robles, acting Minister for Defence, described the fire as devastating, dreadful and overwhelming. But she expressed her optimism “as it steadily

progresses towards stabilisation”. Ms Robles repeated the full support of the Spanish Government for all affected citizens, saying: “We very much feel their pain and concern, for which we offer all our love.”

She further guaranteed the Spanish Government’s commitment, saying: “At all times we are needed, we will be here,” adding: “Those affected will always be supported by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces.”

Nine people nabbed over 11 forest fires

NINE people have so far been arrested over 11 separate forest fires across six Spanish provinces. And one man, in the northwestern area of Lugo, is believed to be behind six outdoor blazes. A Guardia Civil spokesperson said. “The man was using ‘slash and burn’ agricultural techniques to clear land, and his gross negligence sparked the fires.” Police data has revealed that over the last 15 years, almost all forest fires in Spain are sparked by human activity, in some way. This year alone, officers have reported human involvement in 98% of fires, with agricultural work and the use of machinery involved, increasingly. The arrests come amid the Guardia Civil’s summer campaign against forest fires.

Old pumping station has worldwide fame

Festival drugs failed to reach destination

A TEENAGER, caught with several Class A substances as he waited to get into an Adeje festival, has been detained by the National Police.

He had been apprehended at a stop-and-search, substance-control point, and officers were taken by surprise when they realised what the 19-year-old was carrying. They found five bags of already-prepared MDMA, weighing a total of 2.5gms, as well as four ecstasy pills and 2gms of cocaine, in four bags. All the drugs were carefully prepared and ready for distribution. The variety of drugs, as well as the location, led to the teenager’s arrest. But it was unclear to the officers whether the individual would be selling the substances, or if he were smuggling them in to the festival for someone else. The youngster, together with the police report, have been presented before the judicial authorities.

THE Daily Mail has published an extensive report on its official website about all the abandoned palaces and castles, scattered across the world.

The ruins of a special building in Los Realejos, an old pumping station in the north of Tenerife, have found themselves a special place on the website, the image being shared across the world. The ruins are sited within a protected space, with evidence of farmers using

the surrounding area in time gone by. There is a special walk, starting at sea level from the Los Roques beach, and ending in the Hacienda de Castro. Visitors can visualise where pirate attacks took place in past centuries, as well as enjoying the splendour of the

Casona de Castro (manor house). Over the years, the ruins have created much interest with tourists from all over the world. They have also become a popular spot for many walkers, not just for the historical element, but also because of the spectacular views and landscape.

Kingsnake invasion a big worry for island OFFICIALS in Gran Canaria are redoubling their efforts to counter an invasion by the Californian kingsnake, which threatens the balance of nature on the Spanish island. A team of pest-controllers are spending four months before and during the breeding season, trying to catch as many as possible in a bid to halt the species’ spread, with the ultimate aim of eradicating it from

the island. So far this year 507 specimens have been found, similar to the number found by this stage last year. But the anti-pest group aim to double that number by the end of the campaign. The California kingsnake is a constrictor and not poisonous, which is why they are popular pets, and another probable reason how they were introduced to Gran Canaria. Although harmless, albeit scary, to humans, they are having a devastating effect on the island’s native wildlife, said Blanca Pérez, Environment and Security

Minister of the Canarian Government. The breed has no natural predator on the island, and, if left unchecked, would break the balance of the ecosystem, said Pérez. The first symptoms of this problem are already being seen, as there is evidence in areas where the Gran Canaria lizard (Gallotiastehlini) is disappearing. This species, endemic to the island, is the largest lizard on the islands preyed on by the invading species. The authorities stress that now is the most important time of year to trap them, just before they breed.

Affected processed meat sparks Listeria outbreak

THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health issued a warning statement about contaminated meat last Monday, after receiving an alert from its Health and Safety Department. The Health Ministry was notified that on 10th July, a small portion of the processed shredded meat,

Carne Mechada, which had been produced in Seville, was distributed to an Adeje cafeteria. The shredded meat’s brand, La Mecha, which is produced in Seville and was a hot topic this week after the Listeria bacteria was found in the meat, resulted in several, serious cases of the infection across mainland Spain. With this information, Tenerife’s Health Department will verify whether the meat has been sold at the cafeteria, and whether it has any more of this meat in stock. The Canarian Public Health Department has stated that no related cases have been reported of individuals being affected with the Le Mecha product within the Canary Islands. On Tuesday, it become common knowledge that a small quantity of the meat was also distributed to the Castilla La Mancha community. Madrid, Andalusia and Extremadura are where large

quantities of Le Mecha were distributed across Spain. It has already been confirmed that some 80 cases of poisoning have been reported in Andalusia, with two women suffering miscarriages. In Extremadura, one individual was confirmed with Listeria, while a further four are undergoing analysis to determine whether they also have the bacteria, A person in Madrid is also being tested after showing symptoms of the illness. Since last Friday, the affected product was common knowledge, and surveillance throughout Spain is active, to locate where the product was distributed, so it can be withdrawn to prevent further cases arising. Health Department chiefs have made it clear that all batches of the La Mecha meat, manufactured since May, must be withdrawn. They have stressed that their priority is to control the outbreak, and then to investigate how it occurred.

Drunkard’s nightmare for Ryanair flight passengers ALAN Wild’s flight to Tenerife became a nightmare, after a drunken passenger sparked panic when attempting to open the emergency exit while in mid-flight. The holiday-maker, a 47-year-old engineer from Cheshire, reported his story to the UK Press after the drunkard boarded his flight. “We could hear some commotion going on at the front door,” he told the Press. “Basically, this guy got on the plane and was hammered.” Although the drunkard was abusive and loud towards the airline staff, he was still allowed on board, to the disbelief of passengers. He sat down in the emergency-exit seat, and, although being told to move, remained seated, and the plane took off. Then, 30 minutes later, he vomited down himself and all over the aircraft floor, and fellow passengers noticed that he had gone through threequarters of a bottle of whisky. Alan said he was terrified that the man would damage the emergency door, next to where he was sitting. “He sat there, spitting on the floor and hanging off the emergency exit door,” said the disgusted tourist. “His arms were all over it. “Everyone was sitting there thinking ‘what is going on here? We were all very frightened. Everyone within a 10-seat radius was well aware of the

situation, which was awful.” According to Alan, though, the cabin crew seemed unfazed by the incident, claiming that they had to deal with disruptive passengers all the time. Ryanair has recently imposed a ban on all Duty-Free booze being taken on board flights, with extra security police checks at the gates. But the ban did not affect the drunkard, who carried on drinking, and taking aboard the remainder.

Irish toddler critical, after having seizure on holiday AROUND €2,000 has been raised for a two-year-old Irish boy, left in a critical condition after having a seizure while on holiday with his family in Gran Canaria. Jaiden Potter, from County Down, was with his parents in Puerto Rico when he fell ill and stopped breathing. The young boy dropped to the ground while he was in his family’s hotel room and stopped breathing. His father jumped into action, carrying out CPR while awaiting an ambulance. Jaiden was then airlifted to the nearest hospital after starting to bleed from his nose and mouth, according to Irish media. Michael Potter, Jaiden’s uncle, said: “My brother Derek, and his wife and Jaiden, lived in England

for a while, and when they were there, the boy did have fits. “When they came home to Northern Ireland he had more fits, but the hospital staff were unable to do anything because he is still so young. “Everything had been going well the last few months, but he started fitting while on holiday, and he wasn’t breathing.” The toddler boy remains in a critical condition, and Mr Potter set up the GoFundMe page to help with the family’s unexpected health costs.

NEWS IN BRIEF Thief’s smashing time, Fall kills British teenager

A BRITISH youngster, aged just 13, has fallen to his death from a sixth-floor apartment on Spain’s Costa del Sol. The 13-year-old was reported to have been with his mother when he fell from a terrace, on to an internal patio, in Fuengirola. Medics from the emergency services attempted to treat him at the scene, but efforts to revive the boy failed. The incident, which took place on Alberto Morgenstern street, is believed to have been “accidental”, according to local reports.

Blaze destroys port boats

TWO leisure boats moored at Almeria’s Garrucha port caught fire on Tuesday morning, leaving three people injured, two with burns and one from smoke inhalation, Thick black smoke, billowing from the burning boats, was visible from some distance, and both craft were destroyed. The cause of the fire has yet to be established, but the Guardia Civil have launched an investigation.

before police grab him NATIONAL Police officers arrested a 34-year-old man, who already had a criminal record for thieving.

He was detained and charged with breaking into six parked cars, having smashed their windscreens on a Puerto del Rosario street in Fuerteventura, with the intention of stealing the personal contents of owners, who had left them inside. The events happened on Monday morning when a direct call was made to the National Police by a concerned neighbour, who heard the sound of glass being smashed. The neighbour told the operator there was an individual stealing from inside the parked cars on the street. He said several vehicles had been damaged, their windscreens being smashed. The caller also said he saw a man carrying a plastic carrier

bag and riding away on a bike. When the police arrived, they questioned the witness and were told that he owned one of the cars. He also said that various personal items had been taken from inside. His description of the thieving vandal enabled officers to collar a man who fitted the profile. He was riding a bike and also carrying a supermarket carrier bag. The officers stop the cyclist

MORE than 100,000 organ transplants have taken place around the world every year since 2008, yet this figure falls below the number needed. Recent UK studies have shown that in March alone, 6,077 people were on the waiting list for an organ transplant. Also, several people died in the previous 12 months while awaiting a donor. The number of people signing up to be a donor in the UK has increased for nine years in a row, and is now reaching 25.3m. But this is still below the rates in other countries. Spain has the highest organ-donation rate of any country because it operates an opt-out system, which means a far greater percentage of its population is eligible to donate organs.

Amazon creating 600 new jobs

AMAZON, the world’s largest online retailer, will add 600 new employees to its workforce in Spain this year, and a further 200 throughout 2020. That’s because it is expanding its Software Development Centre in Madrid, with a new team dedicated to technologies for Kindle, its e-book, and books. Vacancies will cover all types of profiles, from engineers and software developers to entry-level, data scientists, as well as experts in machine-learning and Cloud services.

and, while in the process of identifying him, their colleagues confirmed that six cars had been broken in to. That’s when the officers arrested the man and charged him with forced entry and robbery. They also searched the suspect, who was carrying several items he’d stolen from the vehicles. The man has since been presented to the judicial authorities in Fuerteventura, along with the police report.

They reported suffering from severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting, as well as nausea and high temperatures. Babies as young as nine months, and a pregnant woman, are among those said to have been affected. Many say they are still affected following their return home. They have all instructed solicitors to look into their claims, after having their holidays ruined by the illness. Sharon Hodgeson, 52, from Slough, Berks, went to Lanzarote for a twoweek break in July with her daughter and son-in law, Sarah and Albert Iseberi, and her four grandchildren. Within four days, Sarah, who is five months’ pregnant, claimed she had diarrhoea, stomach cramps and a high temperature. Two days later, Sharon was

struck down with severe stomach cramps. All family members said they fell ill during the holiday, with similar symptoms. Sharon said: “We spent a lot of money on this trip, and it wasn’t just one or two of our group who got sick, but all of us. This is really not how a holiday should be, and we need to know how this happened.” Darren Evans, 34, from Dukinfield, Cheshire, said that by the second day of his break, he was suffering from diarrhoea, a high temperature, shivers, headaches and nausea. His two children, 17-month-

old Myla and six-year-old Jack, who also fell unwell with similar gastric symptoms, had to see a GP on their return home, and both were confirmed to have contracted salmonella. Emily Martin, 27, an NHS admin worker, travelled to Lanzarote with husband, George, also 27, and their children, in June. Emily from Sidcup, Kent, said she also had diarrhoea and stomach cramps within a few days of being at the hotel. Their daughter Dulcie, now aged 18 months was admitted to hospital while in Lanzarote because of her symptoms. Amandeep Samra, a specialist holiday-illness lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It is deeply concerning to hear that so many people have told us about suffering gastric illness at the resort. “Instead of a relaxing summer break, our clients have been left suffering with horrible symptoms, which have had a major impact on their holidays.” A TUI spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear of these experiences at the Holiday Village Lanzarote. As this is now a legal matter, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

PEOPLE with Spain’s old currency still in their possession have until the end of next year to change it for the euro equivalent at the Bank of Spain. But, depending upon how old and collectible the coins are, selling them online might earn you more. Peseta coins sold to date have fetched between €45 and €20,000, according to the Thelemonapp dealer site. Examples include onepeseta coins dating from 1947. These 72-year-old pieces were the first in which dictator General Franco’s face appeared on the reverse. They are known, colloquially, as “rubias” (blondes), and have fetched between €200 and €1,400 to date. A 2.5-peseta coin from 1953, currently difficult to find, has a market value of between €750 and €1,700, and the 50-peseta coins,

Pesetas are still worth a fistful of euros today minted in 1957, “retail”’ at about €775 on eBay. Yet the “test versions”, which were not actually released into circulation, have been sold for as much as €10,000.

One of the most soughtafter coins by collectors is the 2.5-peseta, from 1946, when Franco appeared on the reverse. And the noncirculating “test coins” can

fetch up to €10,500. So far, the most lucrative peseta coin sale reported has been that of a 1949 five-peseta piece (pictured), which was auctioned by Cayón Subastas for a starting price of €30,000, and went, eventually, for a mouthwatering €36,000. Smaller sums for more recent coins can be earned on eBay: Foronum and Todo Colección, a 1987 coin, is worth up to €45; a 100-peseta one from 1983, up to €55; a 50-peseta coin from 1984 up to €70. Wrong-way driver was free of drugs, and sober

A MAN has been arrested after driving four kilometres the wrong way down a dual carriageway. But breathalyser tests proved he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The 52-year-old was held in Fuente de Piedra after having an accident while on the left-hand side of the road. He was travelling down the A-92, where speed limits are up to 80/ kmph.

The Guardia Civil confirmed that the incident last Wednesday, at about 10.15pm, did not have serious consequences, and nobody was injured. The suspect is believed to have joined the highway in Mollina, travelling in the direction of Sevilla, before his arrest. Officers are working with the theory he may have been confused because of illness, but an investigation has now been launched.

Iman kicked the man in the chest “to slow him down”, according to the Sun. But She added: “He carried on running, and then a young girl shouted, ‘he’s got my dad’s watch’. But Stan ran after him and hit him with a left-hand punch. “Afterwards, you start

thinking that he could have had a knife or a gun, but instinct just kicked in at the time. We were given €50 from the family as a reward, which we didn’t want. But they refused to let us leave without it. “So now we’re enjoying our last afternoon in Mallorca with some free burgers.” Iman has over 17,000 followers on Instagram and has won 88 of her 97 fights, 36 of which were knockouts.

coin from as recently as 1995 can earn you €100, and a 100-peseta coin from 1966, or a five-peseta version from 1975, could each net €400. It is nearly 18 years since the euro was introduced, running parallel with the peseta, initially, but soon replacing it altogether as legal tender. By the start of summer 2002, the euro was the only accepted currency, but Spain did not have enough coins and notes in circulation to guarantee providing change for large sums, causing difficulties at first. Pesetas could still be changed at high-street banks, but this stopped, eventually, and they had to be returned to the Bank of Spain if their owners wanted the euro equivalent. Astonishingly, a total of €1.6bn in pesetas remains in circulation, somewhere. That’s because not all Spaniards are aware that they can change them, or because they are kept as souvenirs, particularly among foreign holiday-makers.

Shaky El Fraile building just too unsafe

ARONA Town Hall reports that 20 residents, from eight apartments, were evacuated from an El Fraile building in Calle Fuerteventura, last Friday evening, after they reported that they could feel it shaking.

Technicians have judged the building to be unsafe, and the Council have opened the municipal sports pavilion to allow the residents to stay there, temporarily. The 15 adults and five children were allowed in to collect essential personal belongings. The Town Hall’s Urbanismo and Emergencias services have confirmed visual structural damage and water seepage, and the building has now been cordoned off entirely.

Spanish navy opens arms to a boatload of migrants

SPAIN has decided to send a navy ship to pick up hundreds of migrants, including children, trapped at sea for 19 days on the NGO boat Open Arms rescue vessel. The boat had been at sea for 19 days, having saved around 150 migrants from the Mediterranean. But conditions aboard had worsened, and several rescued travellers had jumped into the sea in a bold bid to swim to the Italian Island of Lampedusa. A spokesman for Spain’s temporary ruling PSOE party, said: “After analysing

a number of options, the Spanish Government, in accordance with the logistic recommendations of the Navy, believes that this action is the most appropriate. It will allow for the resolution of the humanitarian emergency on board.” The Navy ship Audaz set sail on Wednesday from the Rota naval base in Cádiz, and medical staff and psychologists have been placed on board to treat the migrants, especially the children, on route to Spain. The Government has proposed escorting the Open Arms to the Mallorcan port of Palma, and the journey to the Italian island will take the patrol boat three days.

Syrian’s ID papers just didn’t add up!

OFFICERS from the National Police have detained a man at Fuerteventura airport, who was attempting to travel to the UK on false British documentation.

The 33-year-old already has a police record, and the officers were informed by the airline that a person was trying to board an aeroplane with a suspicious passport, which appeared to have been tampered with. While police were identifying the man, they were able to verify that

the name on the passport was his… but the photograph showed little resemblance. After a search of his belongings, the officers found other documentation, identifying the man as well as his nationality. They questioned the dodgy traveller, who eventually told them his true identity, and admitted he was from Syria. He was promptly arrested for trying to leave a country using false documentation, and, along with the official police reports, he will be presented before the judicial authorities.

Irish airline flies high with the top passenger figures

FIGURES released by airport governing body AENA show that the most-used carrier this year across all of Spain’s terminals, so far, is Ryanair, and by a considerable margin!

Between January and June 2019 inclusive, just under 23,571,000 passengers travelled to and from Spain with the Irish-based, budget airline. The second-most-used flight company was Catalunyabased budget carrier Vueling, part of the IAG Group, which owns Iberia and British Airways, with 19.6m customers travelling to and from Spain. Both these low-cost options were streets ahead of national airline Iberia, which, despite providing long-haul, short-haul and national flights, its traffic accounted for just under 9.9m passengers in the first six months of 2019. Spanish carrier Air Europa, with 9.1m, beat Ryanair’s main rival, easyJet, which transported 8.32m travellers. Iberia would still have been

just the third-busiest airline in Spain, during the first half of this year, even when taking into account passenger figures for its short-haul Iberia Express, with 4.8m, and regional branch Air Nostrum, with 4.28m. Norwegian, which beat Air Nostrum, was behind Iberia Express, carrying 4.55m passengers. Making up the remainder of the top 10 was the Binter company, with 3.57m and Jet2, with 3.3m. At the end of June, the sixth month, Ryanair held 18.4% of Spain’s air-travel-market quota, even though it reported a fall of 21% in profits in the first quarter of 2019. It has also warned staff

that it might have to make several hundred cabincrew members and pilots redundant, especially if a nodeal Brexit affects flight traffic between the UK and Ireland. But despite being only the fourth carrier in Spain, Air Europa has shown the greatest and fastest passenger growth this year, increasing its customer numbers by 12.6%, which adds up to around one million travellers. Low-cost airlines now account for 73m passengers, in and out of Spain, between January and June. A total of 263 million people flew out of, or into, Spain, in 2018.

Owing €3 or less to the Hacienda? Just keep it!

SPAIN’S tax authorities say they have wiped out all debts of €3 or less, owed by individuals and companies.

Hacienda, as the national revenue office is known, says an amendment has been made to a Ministerial Order, dating back to 2002, and those who were still owing on 1st March this year will be removed from the debtors’ list. The Hacienda adds: “This move is strictly financial, since unpaid tax totalling €3 or less would cost more to chase up and collect,

than the sum owing.” Even taking into account that the total sum of debts held nationally, not exceeding €3, may total hundreds of thousands, every one of them would require a letter, text message or email, or even a notification in the State Official Bulletin (BOE), in which payment reminders have failed. Then there’s the employee time taken to issue these, meaning the overall admin and labour cost would surpass the collective sum missing. Tax authorities say they would get nothing out of continuing to chase these cases.

New Spanish mums top of EU’s over-40s group

Drug-smuggling not such a fishy business

A FISH company has upheld legal action against Spain, after a failed drugs-bust forced it to toss out 24 tonnes of sardines. SPAIN has the highest proportion of first-time EU mothers over the age of 40, and experts blame “job security”.

The country also has the highest proportion of first-time mothers in their 30s, at 60.2%. Albert Esteve, director of the Demographic Studies Centre at Barcelona’s Autonomous University, said there were economic reasons behind the statistics. “We are among the countries where independence happens later through lack

of job security and low salaries, along with difficulties in finding a place to live,” he said. “These factors mean that people cannot leave home when they want to.” The phenomenon in Spain has been building over the past decade, with births from mothers, aged 40 and over, rising to 63%, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Spanish youth are among the latest to leave home in the EU (average age is 29), while the average age for first-time mothers is 31. Figures also show an average of 1.25

children per woman in 2018. Diego Ramon, a demographic expert at the Spanish National Research Council, said mature women were much more at risk of having failed pregnancies. “More than 20% of women born in the 1970s will not have children,” he said. “We have not yet caught up with Japan, where the figure is almost 30%. But there could be long-term consequences. “For example, when people get old, they won’t have a family network to look after them, so other care systems will have to be put in place.”

Police investigating hash smugglers forced Malagabased firm Procomar Alimentos to empty its refrigerated truck after it left Morocco. The business is claiming €18,500 in compensation, following a failed search by officers, which left hundreds of boxes of seafood inedible. Customs officers in the Port of Algeciras had lowered the temperature of the vehicle in order to search it, before finding nothing but fish. A judge in Estepona, mistakenly, thought the firm had been smuggling hashish and gave police the powers to seize the drugs.

However, the Ministry of Justice has refused to pay for the spoilt fish, saying that it was the responsibility of the business, as it was seized under a police order. A police report of the probe stated: “There is no element of interest in the boxes.” The Costa del Sol company had bought its products from Moroccan firm Ifni Sea Food, before shipping them to Algeciras. It had also contacted the Port of Algeciras before the shipment arrived on May 29 2014. The Council of the Judiciary rejected the compensation claim on the grounds that police action had been made “proportionately”, in relation to large-scale drugsmuggling. It added that the seizure was part of an essential investigation, which had suspected driver-involvement in drug-smuggling.

Average rent goes up 50% in just five years

Judge banishes thieving couple from their island

A NEW report by the Bank of Spain reveals that the average cost of rent in Spain and the Canary Islands has risen 50% in the past five years.

According to the study, based on figures from realestate website Idealista, rental prices rose the most in Palma and Barcelona (more than 50%), followed by Málaga, Madrid, Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas and Valencia (around 45%), between the end of 2013 and May 2019. Inland areas in Spain, however, have experienced the lowest spikes in rental prices. Yet the report found that rental prices have increased at a “significantly faster rate” than housing costs. The rising cost of rent is hitting low-income homes particularly hard, and, says the study, families with few resources, who account for the majority of the rental community, are less likely to buy property, given the difficulty of accessing credit. What’s more, these families spend a higher percentage of their salary on rent. The report showed that in 2014, the average spending on rental expenses represented 27% of the net income in all Spanish homes, and 46.9% of the net income in lowincome homes. In both cases, Spain is above the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) country average. Spaniards in the lowestincome bracket spend 63.9% of their net earnings on rent, a figure only topped by Greece (68.6%). The Bank of Spain report indicates that the increasing profitability of rental properties has attracted new

TWO Mallorcan criminals, accused of multiple crimes, including a string of thefts from a Magaluf beach, were banished from their own island by a judge.

The men, said to have extensive criminal records, were arrested by an off-duty police officer last week when he recognised them in the Plaza del Mercadal, in Sineu. Judge Antoni Rotger had insisted the men leave the island before 8pm on 28th July, but they failed to comply, and carried on living in Mallorca. They were also

players to the market, such as investment funds, businesses and real-estate investment trusts (known in Spain as socimis). Other reasons behind the rise in rental prices include the precariousness of working conditions, which make it more difficult for Spaniards, who are unemployed or in temporary jobs, to buy property. The growing number of

people moving to the cities in search of work, and the reduced volume of available social housing, also add to the equation. But the Bank’s study does not reach any strong conclusions on whether the rise in shortterm vacation rentals, like Airbnb, have pushed up the cost of rent in Spain. While the report makes note of the trend, it argues that there is no proven correlation.

fined €5,400 for breaching his order. A lawyer representing the two men has argued that the measures were disproportionate, saying there were other options to prevent them offending again. The lawyer added that an island ban would hinder their personal and family life, as well as their economic and work situation. He said the prosecutor had agreed with his reasoning, and asked that the suspects be prohibited from being within 200m of Magaluf beach. Another court date is set for the end of August, when the judge will make his final ruling.

DGT’s special vans out to crack rogue drivers

SPAIN’S traffic controller DGT (Directorate General of Traffic), as well as employing motorway drones to catch motorists breaking driving regulations, is also using camouflaged vans to hunt them down. Initially, the DGT is testing out the strategy in Galicia, circulating among traffic

to see whether motorists there are violating traffic laws, such as using mobiles, or driving with wireless earpieces. Also, with the summer festival season in full swing, the DGT has been focusing on those drivers who get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs.

Brick Beach project will satisfy the wildlife there

15 CW

No-deal could prove so costly for tourists MILLIONS of families could see holiday bills rocket if Britain leaves the EU without a deal, because they would lose their European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC).

TECHNICIANS from the Aula del Mar environmental organisation, as part of their preparation for the forthcoming “Brick Beach” project, have been conducting surveys and monitoring the state of the wildlife on the coastline. The project is planned for Mezquitilla Beach, in Velez Malaga, and reclaimed building materials will be reused to create a brandnew coastline, in place of the current area, which is deteriorating rapidly.

Aula del Mar and María José Roberto, Councillor responsible for the project, will conduct surveys of the renovation area periodically. The aim is to create a picture of the wildlife, which call the area their home, and to limit any adverse effects of the construction work on their habitat. “We are creating a catalogue of animal and plant species, so that when the restoration work of coastal habitats starts, these coastal systems are affected as little as possible,” said a group spokesperson. “We will also be studying the changes that occur in it, by the season.”

Tourists are already seeing their spending money shrink, with the pound plunging to record lows against other currencies. More than 4.5m under-16s carry the cards, which give travellers the right to access state-provided healthcare while travelling in Europe, either free or at a reduced charge. But the cards would become redundant in a no-deal scenario, leaving families seeking their own health insurance, if necessary, while on holiday. Tom Watson, Labour’s Deputy Leader, said: “The Brexit chaos caused by the Tory Party could mean that millions of families face extra charges to go on holiday. “Families across the country will have saved and planned

“The Prime Minister’s mishandling of Brexit could make holiday prices rocket” for a summer holiday, to spend special, quality time together, but this Prime Minister’s mishandling of Brexit could make holiday prices rocket.” He added: “Boris Johnson ’s reckless, senseless approach to Brexit will leave working families worse off. He must urgently rethink, and take no-deal off the table.” Research carried out by Labour suggests travel insurance for a couple in

their 70s to go to Spain would cost an extra £108. NHS guidance says access to healthcare in the EU is likely to change, if Britain leaves the EU without a deal. It urges people planning to travel on or after 31st October to buy travel insurance, as you would if visiting a non-EU country. Spain has publicly committed to healthcare access for resident and visiting UK nationals.

We must save wildlife, pleads an expat expert SPAIN’S regional authorities are being pushed to do more to help the thousands of animals which die every year, after being caught in electric cables.

Birds of prey, including many protected species, have been killed on an industrial scale, which is something described by conservation groups as “truly a massacre”. In fact, more than 33,000 birds of prey die each year because of electricity wires, according to a report by Spain’s Environment Ministry. Red Electrica’s network of 362 mega pylons across the Alpujarras could see protection measures cut to save money, according to expat conservation expert Nick Chambers. It comes as a result of the Olive Press online launching

its Fight the Power campaign, to highlight how more

than 200 species could be threatened by the project,

over 50% of which are birds. “There is a whole list of regulations that need to be followed to safeguard these protective birds,” said Chambers. “It is highly likely that they will do the absolute minimum to save themselves money on the whole thing.” Chambers, who has helped protect some of the UK’s most vibrant wetlands, said: “Of course, environmental rules are the first to be cut as they are the hardest to monitor.” He has joined other Spanish conservationist and environmental groups in calling on authorities to do more to discipline the energy companies. But Red Electrica claims it works to minimise the towers’ impact on birds. An REE spokesperson said: “To increase the visibility of these electric cables, we use birdflight diverters, which alert the birds to the presence of the cables.”

Car kills driver by rolling backwards

A WOMAN was fatally injured after being run over in Castalla, Alicante, by her own car, after it rolled backwards over her when she left the vehicle. The 38-year-old mother of two was with both her children when she was fatally injured. They were also in the car at the time, along with a young boy and a baby. The police reported that the woman had put the handbrake on. But, for whatever reason, it became unhitched and the vehicle began rolling back while she was behind it. There were several medical professionals and police officers in the rural area, as the annual “Festival of the Cows” was just starting at the time. Paramedics arrived at the scene, shortly after the accident had been reported by a local farmer, but they were unable to save her life.

Emergency ambulances were seen taking people on stretchers from the coach, though just the two injured were confirmed. The accident happened on the AP-7 southbound towards Alicante, and, said Dave McQueen, owner of BenidormReviews.com: “It looked like a coach full of tourists. “Its side was open, and it was full of suitcases, so it was definitely packed when it crashed.” The coach, reportedly a 52-seater, had hit three cars in front, which, he said: “Looked like a chunk of metal.” The incident occurred on the AP-7 motorway, where the road forks between an exit to El Campello and to Alicante airport, and traffic was diverted to the hard shoulder.

By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

WHEN was the last time you gave your finances a health check? If it was a while ago, you could be paying more taxes than necessary, or missing out on new opportunities.

You will benefit most from a holistic review, looking at how your savings, investments, other assets, tax planning, pensions and estate planning are structured, and how they can best work together. Protecting your wealth While you will want to preserve your wealth and see it grow over time, this can be challenging in today’s economic and political climate. The prolonged period of low interest rates, for example, has made it harder to achieve decent returns on lower-risk investments, aggravated by creeping inflation. And, of

Is your financial planning in good shape for today?

course, Brexit continues to stoke economic and currency uncertainty. At times like this, careful cross-border planning plays a particularly important role in securing your financial security over the long term. You need to weigh up which issues affect you most and establish what you can do to protect against them. DIY vs expert advice Most people, who have built up or inherited wealth, will benefit from an independent and expert review of their finances. After all, it is difficult to look at your broad, financial situation from a trulyobjective point of view, or fully understand the complex tax implications. It is quite easy to get DIY tax planning wrong, and potentially invite an unexpected tax bill, or even a tax investigation. For the best results, talk to a financial adviser with cross-border experience. They should take time, and use relevant tools to thoroughly understand your unique situation, needs and objectives, to establish tax-

efficient solutions for you and your heirs. Investment planning While all investments - even bank accounts - carry risk, a suitably-diversified portfolio can help manage risk, within your comfort level. It is essential to establish a clear and objective view of your risk tolerance, to determine the investment approach that will best suit you. An adviser is best placed to do this, objectively, using psychometric testing, for example, combined with their knowledge of your family’s situation in Spain, and your financial goals. Understanding local taxation If you live here, all elements of your financial planning from investments to estate planning - should be set up

for Spain, not the UK. Ideally, your adviser should be based locally in the Canary Isles, and have first-hand experience of the issues facing expatriates here, financial and otherwise. Crucially, they should also have in-depth understanding of cross-border tax planning, including the Spanish tax regime, and how it interacts with UK rules. A local adviser can also react quickly and help you make adjustments if your personal circumstances change, or if there are Brexit developments or tax reforms that may affect you, including new opportunities. Protection through regulation Make sure you only deal with an adviser who has higher-level professional

qualifications, and is authorised by a reputable regulatory body, such as the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), as well as being authorised to give advice in Spain. Note that using a UK-regulated adviser is mandatory if you want to transfer from a “defined-benefit” pension scheme worth £30,000 or more a year, but it is recommended for anyone considering their pension options. Remember: if you are living in the Canary Isles, your finances should be set up for here, not for your old life in the UK. The sooner you set up a strategic, long-term vision to protect your wealth, the sooner you can relax into a prosperous future in Spain. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. No-deal Brexit would cost ½m Europe jobs

A NO-DEAL Brexit on 31st October would cause 1.2 million jobs to be lost across Europe, including 70,410 in Spain, according to a study by Belgium’s Leuven University. MORE than five years of funding cuts and forced retirements, as well as restrictions on the number of Medical Resident Interns (MIR), have left the Spanish Health Service with a staffing crisis. The strain on its resident doctors, caused by the lack of correct staff numbers, has led to a record 2,540 doctors seeking employment abroad, mainly in France and the UK. And, with the impending

retirement of over 45,000 doctors, who started work back in the booming 1980s, it is bound to make a bad situation even worse. When it comes to doctors wishing to remain in Spain, the most certificates issued is in the Catalonia region, with 567, which overtakes Madrid (510) as the most desirable area to work. Andalucia (354) sits in third, with Valencia (210) lying fourth. For those wanting to work abroad, apart from France and the UK, with 392 and 366 certificates issued respectively, Ireland (188), Italy (188) and Germany (105), also appear in the statistics.

The research, commissioned by the Belgian Government, showed that the UK leaving the EU without an agreement would cause major job losses in every country in Europe. France would lose 141,320 jobs, while Germany would suffer a mammoth 291,930 redundancies, estimated the study. But the country expected to suffer the most is the UK, where more than 500,000 jobs would be lost. The survey looked at both the total number and the percentage of jobs that would be lost in each country. Ireland would be one of the worst-hit countries percentage wise, standing to lose 50,330 jobs. Belgium too would lose a higher percentage of jobs, with

42,390 redundancies expected in a no-deal scenario. The study also looked at the potential impact if the UK left with an agreement. In that case, the number of jobs lost across Europe would be smaller, but still significant. Spain was one of the EU nations least affected by Brexit, but was still expected to face 15,840 job losses, even if Britain leaves the EU with an agreement. The study took into account how supply chains across the EU and globally would be disrupted, as well as the countries’ direct trade links with the UK. To calculate the impact, researchers defined ‘leaving with an agreement’ as a

situation where the UK leaves the EU, but remains part of the internal market or the European Customs Union. For the projected nodeal scenario, researchers assumed the UK would leave the single market and fall back on the rules of the World Trade Organisation. Meanwhile, a separate data set published in the Financial Times this week showed how personal finances would be hit across Europe under a nodeal scenario, with the UK again worst hit. It showed that southern Spain is expected to escape the effects, but those in the north and centre of the country can expect to be around 50 euros worse off, annually, on average.

A Black And White Killing: The Case That Shook America

Who wants to be a millionaire?

A brand new series of the most famous quiz in the world returns with host Jeremy Clarkson. Six contestants vie to win the chance of answering 15 questions correctly to win £1,000,000. 4 lifelines – Phone A Friend, 50:50, Ask The Audience and Ask the Host can help them on their way.

In 2016, outside a convenience store in Portland, Oregon, Russel Courtier, a member of white supremacist gang European Kindred, ran over and killed a young black man called Larnell Bruce. CCTV footage of the incident went viral and shocked America - not just because of its brutality, but because of the question at its heart: was Larnell Bruce killed because he was black? The events of that night aren’t disputed, but Courtier’s motivation was, and the jury had to decide if Larnell Bruce was killed because he was black In search of an answer, journalist Mobeen Azhar travels to Oregon to follow the trial and to delve deep into the heart of America’s far right movement. As the scars of racial injustice still run deep across the US, Larnell Bruce’s death soon became part of a very public battle about decades of racial tension rather than what happened to one young black man. Whilst a jury is asked to decide whether Courtier’s actions were affected by racist thoughts as he put his foot on the pedal, the whole of America watches and waits for the verdict. Uncovering a dark underbelly to the apparently liberal city of Portland, Mobeen comes face to face with neo-Nazis, and meets with members and former members of the European Kindred group. In the series, Mobeen also meets with some of the witnesses to the killing, and get to know the families of the defendant and the victim. Meanwhile in the court, as the prosecution produces a body of evidence, including the European Kindred cap worn by Courtier, the gang tattoo on his leg and crucial testimony from eye-witnesses, Courtier’s fate begins to look sealed. But in a dramatic twist the trial is flipped on its head, and it soon becomes clear that the case is anything but black and white.

Fighter Pilot: The Real Top Gun “This is the Oxford or Cambridge of fighter pilot training. It is not easy. Anytime someone takes their foot off the gas here, they will fail.” - ‘Puppy’, fighter pilot school boss This new three-part documentary series follows a trio of fighter pilot recruits as they attempt to become the best of the best - to be selected to fly the RAF’s brand new F35 Lightning jet. With exclusive access to the Royal Air Force’s brand new £100 million F35 fighter programme and to the Ministry Of Defence’s fast jet recruitment process, this series goes inside the cockpit to bring viewers a vivid insight into the challenges faced by the men and women who aim to become the UK military’s top guns. The series features a close-up perspective on those on the learning curve aiming to reach the top as well as on already qualified fighter pilots training to fly the massively advanced new F35 aircraft. With just a few months to get ready for the front line, their task is to be fitted up for space-age new suits and helmets, to learn how to steer with their feet - and to familiarise themselves with a jet that can avoid radar, hover, and land vertically. With footage shot at the RAF’s academy in North Wales and at the F35 base in South Carolina, USA, the programme features Danielle, known as Danners, who is aiming to become one of only nine British female frontline pilots, former windsurfing instructor Sedge, and young dad Andy. The trio are aiming to ultimately become F35 pilots if they make the grade - but if they fail they face the reality that they may not get the chance to fly fast jets again. Narrated by Samantha Bond, this programme gives viewers a breath-taking cockpit-eye view of the recruits stepping into the danger zone aiming to achieve their dreams. In the second episode, the fighter pilot students at Britain’s very own academy for Top Guns turn their attention to dogfighting. Learning air combat is a key skill if they want to reach their goal of flying solo, and eventually the brand new F35 Lightning. While Andy has aced his flights and passed every one so far, Sedge has previously failed one and knows he must keep up his standards to progress. He says: “There’s a different kind of pressure, bit of pressure to perform today. I wouldn’t say I was nervous, I just want to get in and go now.”

The Browns are excited as preparations for Rory and Dino’s big day are in full swing - although Agnes’s mood is dampened when she meets flamboyant celebrity wedding planner La La Doggy. The foul-mouthed matriarch also clashes with Father Damien when he raises religious concerns about the ceremony - and to top it all off, she gets more than she bargained for when she invites Cathy’s boyfriend’s parents over for the evening.

It’s 1973. Three months after Bob has checked himself out of the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic, he has hired a weekend cottage in Southampton with his girlfriend Ann Reinking, to comfort his recently bereaved friend Neil Simon. Also invited are his friend Paddy Chayefsky, and Gwen, with her boyfriend Ron. Ann is concerned that Gwen won’t like her, but Bob reminds her that Gwen will be on her best behaviour since they are there for Neil. Paddy informs Neil that Bob’s new project will star Dustin Hoffman, and Bob says that he is planning to film in Miami, since that is where Lenny Bruce, the subject of the movie, did his routines at the clubs. When Gwen and Ron arrive, Bob does not remember being punched by Ron when he, in a drugged stupor, broke into Gwen’s apartment and got into bed with them. Bob and Gwen tease each other about being much older than their new partners and Gwen is surprised to learn that the Lenny project is still on, since Bob had not mentioned it for months. She is excited to tell Bob that they have finally got a theatre for their project of Chicago, but Bob is hesitant, saying he has a lot of work with the Lenny script. Ann tells Paddy that she is concerned about Bob, since he checked himself out of the hospital after six days and has given up taking the prescribed lithium. Paddy is surprised, since Bob told him that the doctors had given him a clean bill of health - not that Bob should take a year off form working. Over dinner, Paddy tactfully suggests to Bob that he should give up Lenny and take some time to decide on what his next project should be, not be pressured into doing Lenny simply because Hoffman is available. Gwen takes the opportunity to mention Chicago again. Gwen has a heartto-heart with Ann, warning her that Bob’s idea of a relationship is that whatever Bob wants Bob gets, but assures her that she is different from Bob’s numerous other girlfriends, since he trusts her with Nicole.

When a coach accident introduces Charlotte Heywood to Tom and Mary Parker, she quickly seizes the opportunity to throw herself into the adventure she has craved all her life by agreeing to return with them to the developing seaside resort of Sanditon. However, young and naïve Charlotte soon has her father’s warnings ringing in her ears when she discovers that the inhabitants of the town behave in curious and unpredictable ways that she could never have imagined. After meeting Tom Parker’s family – including his kind-hearted hypochondriac siblings Diana and Arthur – Charlotte feels she is quite entered into society, particularly when she visits the splendour of Sanditon House. However, Charlotte realises that the morals of Sanditon are far looser than she’s experienced before. The indomitable Lady Denham – Sanditon’s wealthiest landowner – presides over the town and is the chief investor Tom Parker’s fledgling business enterprise. Sir Edward and Esther Denham hatch a scheme to persuade their wealthy aunt Lady Denham to favour them in her will. But will all go to plan? Tom Parker eagerly anticipates the arrival of his brother Sidney to Sanditon, hoping that his fashionable friends represent the start of a steady stream of new visitors for his growing seaside resort. But to Tom’s shock, Sidney also brings a staggeringly wealthy mixed-race heiress called Miss Lambe to the town.

Save Money: Good Health

This week we’re focusing on gut health - from the latest probiotics to off the shelf remedies for tummy problems. Sian joins up with microbiologist Dr Lindsay Hall to look at home bacteria-testing kits. Sian turns guinea pig to check out her microbe levels. Both kits had a hefty price tag, but do they reveal anything interesting? She’ll also look at probiotics and gut enhanced products to investigate whether the £750 million we spend on them every year is money well spent or whether food can do the same job at a fraction of the cost. Doctor Ranj continues the gut health theme by looking at digestive ailments such as acid reflux and indigestion. Nearly 80% of British adults suffer from some type of gut or digestive disorder. Which are the best over the counter products to prevent tummy problems and treat the symptoms? And we’ll also look at food-poisoning and how to fight germ warfare in our own kitchen. Verity Mann from the Good Housekeeping Institute gives us her essential and affordable guide to keeping bugs at bay. We’re continuing to shop around for treatments to those embarrassing problems so you don’t have to. This time, we’re tackling a painful condition: ingrown toenails. And not forgetting, our essential weekly guide to vitamin and mineral supplements which this week is Vitamin D.

Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould examine a still life that may have been painted by prolific artist William Nicholson, but which has been rejected by leading experts on his work. They discover a useful source of evidence in Nicholson’s own paint box, but as they delve into the painting’s history, they discover it may have been connected to one of the 20th century’s greatest art crimes. Fiona meets a reformed forger to discover if he ever faked a Nicholson while Philip takes the painting to Canada to compare it to another of the artist’s works.

Infrared cameras to Remembering all help save our whales who died in horrific aeroplane blaze

EIGHT criticallyendangered North Atlantic Right Whales have died this summer, several of them having been hit by ships.

That has prompted Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans to announce a new round of funding to develop better ways for ships to find whales, and avoid striking them. And one of those technologies is thermal infrared imaging. “What we are exploiting here is the apparent temperature contrast between the background, which is the ocean, and the whale spout itself,” Dan Zitterbart told Living Lab Radio. Zitterbart is an assistant scientist at

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and part of the team developing the technology. “A very characteristic whale blow can be picked up in thermal infrared cameras as a warm feature, compared with the background,” he said. Zitterbart and his team have already shown that the concept works. By the end of 2020, they plan to have a prototype machine, which they can test on commercial vessels. As a scientist, it isn’t Zitterbart’s role to commercialise the machine, but, rather, to get it to a point where it works without an expert at the helm. Whether or not infrared cameras can help North Atlantic Right Whales is an open question. Zitterbart said the technology

was more likely to help the fast ferries near the Canary Islands, for example. “They have a massive problem with ship strikes of sperm whales,” he said. “And they are pretty manoeuvrable ships, so they can slow down pretty quickly. But if you’re talking about a super-tanker, that’s a different scale of the problem. “Nevertheless, with just 400odd North Atlantic Right Whales left in the world, it’s time to throw everything we have at the problem.” He added: “We estimate that every one of those deaths reduces, dramatically, the survival rate of the species. “So, if we can get a piece of the pie with all the different technologies that are out there, I believe that’s the best we can do.”

TUESDAY, 20th August, marked an important date in the Spanish aviation world, because, on that day in 2008, Spanair’s Madrid-to-Gran Canaria flight JK 5022, caught fire shortly after take-off from Barajas Airport.

This horrific incident was reported as being one of the worse aviation tragedies in Spain, because 154 people died and eight others were seriously injured. Last Tuesday, Madrid and Gran Canaria remembered

all the victims of this tragic event, and family members of the victims attended an official ceremony at Barajas Airport to pray, as well as offer flowers to commemorate the 11th anniversary. The ceremony took place on the runway where the accident happened, followed by a minute’s silence at 2.42pm, which was the time the accident occurred, as a mark of respect to all the victims, and families. The worst incident recorded to date was in 1977, at the Los Rodeos airport, now known as Tenerife North, where 583 people lost their lives when two commercial aeroplanes crashed into each other.

vessels, and a Balearia tug.” The statement added: “Balearia made two coaches available for passengers with cars, which couldn’t

be disembarked from the ferry; one with a final destination of Valencia and the other bound for Alicante, with stops on route. “Balearia will remain in contact with passengers, who still have their vehicles on board, to inform them about when they can remove them. “The company removed the other belongings they had on board and have handed them over.” An investigation is now underway into the incident. Divers are evaluating the damage to the ship and working on ways of refloating it, so that it can be brought into port.

Hundreds evacuated from grounded passenger ferry NEARLY 400 people on board a passenger ferry were evacuated after it ran aground in a Costa Blanca port last Sunday at 11.30pm.

Spanish coastguards and Guardia Civil officers helped get passengers to safety after the drama, in the port of Denia. The packed ship, a Balearia ferry taking holiday-makers from Majorca and Ibiza to Denia, is understood to have run aground after scraping the harbour wall as it prepared to dock. Passengers with cars had

to leave them on board, and were given the option of being bussed to the nearby cities of Valencia or Alicante, with stops on the way. The vessel involved in the incident was the Pinar del Rio fast ferry, and the rescue operation continued for at least two hours, until around 2am. Balearia said in a statement: “The fast ferry Pinar del Rio ran aground at 11.30pm by Denia’s harbour wall, without any personal injury to passengers or crew. “The fast ferry, which was coming from Palma and Ibiza, was going to dock in the port. There were 393

people and 70 vehicles on board. “All the passengers were unharmed and they were evacuated using Spanish Coastguard and Civil Guard

Big-time money-launderers ‘cleaned’ fortune for gangs A GROUP of professional money launderers in Spain, who “cleaned” more than €70m for Colombian and Asian gangs, have been dismantled.

Twenty-eight people have been arrested, 22 of them in Spain and six in the Netherlands, and 19 commercial companies are being investigated. In addition, seven firearms, 100 vehicles and more than 70 buildings and bank accounts have been seized or embargoed. The investigation also found a link between more than 5,000kg of cocaine seized in Holland, with some of those probed. Spain’s National Police, together with Guardia Civil officers, found that the organisation members were based mainly in Madrid and Toledo. They provided their services to other criminal groups, mostly Asian, who were

dedicated to fraud against the public treasury, and some Colombians, dedicated to international drug-trafficking, who were charged a 10-15%

commission. The arrested people had set up a large number of companies in fields such as import-export, real estate

management and the buying and selling of gold, along with other precious metals, such as silver or platinum. These companies were in the name of front men, who lent their identity in exchange for money; thus, giving the organisation access to a series of bank accounts. In the case of the Asian scheme, where clients mainly wanted to avoid paying taxes, entrepreneurs contacted the organisation delivering the money in cash. The launderers then contacted various petty criminals, from whom they acquired jewellery from burglaries. These were melted into ingots, and then sold to wholesalers, who paid money by bank transfers. Through this system of buying and melting gold, the dismantled organisation acquired more than 2,000kg of gold on the black market. They would then transfer the money raised between their front companies with false invoicing, before, finally, transferring it to the destination country through

the fake import-export companies, again backed by false invoices and fake contracts. Police also detected the simulation of commercial operations. The launderers, after receiving the money and circulating it among their companies, transferred it to the companies of the “clients”, justifying it as payment for goods or services. This money was then used to buy property. The investigation revealed that the disbanded organisation had been contacting people of Colombian origin, living mainly in the Netherlands, from whom it received large sums of cash. A total in excess of more than €2m from this group was laundered and later invested in the real-estate market of Madrid and Toledo. This Colombian group have been linked to the seizure of 5,000kg of cocaine in the Netherlands. And information found by the Spanish police has been sent to their Dutch colleagues, to help them investigate that case.

Spaniards are not the worst drivers around!

23rd August 2019 - 29th August 2019

A STUDY by the Spanish Royal Automobile Club has surveyed residents of 15 EU countries, to find out which has the worst and best habits when it comes to road safety.

While many people might believe that Spanish drivers are less disciplined behind the wheel than other European motorists, this turns out to be an urban myth. The reality is somewhat different, though, because the Spanish are far from being the worst drivers, according to an annual survey. It was carried out by the Spanish Royal Automobile Club (RACE), in collaboration with the Association of Drinks and Refreshments, along with the support of Spain’s DGT traffic authority. In fact, as many as 43.5% of Europeans admit to driving after drinking alcohol. But though the survey focuses largely on fatigue at the wheel, it does include other issues such as driving under

the influence. And it does allow for a fairly accurate profile of drivers of both sexes, between the ages of 18 and 75, drawn from 3,368 online interviews from drivers in 15 countries: Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, the UK, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Spain has actually dropped to eighth place regarding road fatalities, with 39 deaths for every one million inhabitants, which ranks the country below the European average of 51 per million. Sweden has the lowest roadfatality rate, with 25 deaths per million residents, followed by Britain (27) and Denmark (32). At the other end of the scale, Romania tops the list with 99 fatalities for every million residents, followed by Bulgaria (89) and Croatia (80). The survey points out that 90.1% of Europeans use the car frequently, Spaniards scoring above average with 91%, while 97% of Italians are regular drivers.

The Spanish are far from being the worst drivers, according to an annual survey In other areas, 78.9% of Europeans use their vehicle for leisure, while 11.6% use it for professional reasons, similar to those in Spain. The Spanish make an average of 11.7 trips of over 200km, annually. The Swedes travel the furthest in their cars, covering an average of 5,159km on similar trips. And although

shared car platforms are gaining popularity, 64.4% of Europeans still use their own vehicles for travel: 72.8% in Spain, despite this being more expensive than other options. Once on the road, Spanish drivers average two hours and seven minutes into the journey for a break, putting them in fourth position.

Ruben falls to his death after parachute failure A DAREDEVIL, who sneaked into an Alicante cement factory in the dead of night to jump from a 150ft-high chimney, died after his parachute only partially-opened. Ruben Carbonell, 29, threw himself from the Cemex building in Alicante’s San Vicente del Raspeig, at 1am last Wednesday. The Costa Blanca native’s aim was to record the jump and post it to his social media channels, dedicated to extreme sports. A friend with him raised the alarm when the

Spaniard crashed to the ground, dying instantly. An investigation is underway to find out how the pair got into the cement factory and managed to climb up the chimney. The deceased specialised in risk sports, and videos he had uploaded show him jumping from bridges,

as well as paragliding and parachuting on an inflatable unicorn. He had a YouTube channel, Ruben Carbonell Beneyto, but this had just six subscribers. Yet his Instagram channel, fibra3, attracted 562 followers. According to reports, the deceased and his friend jumped the fence, which was supposed to prevent access to the company’s cement factory. Once inside, both climbed to the top of a 165ft tower, from which Ruben jumped first. But his parachute did not open fully, for reasons that are being investigated. His friend, who was at the scene, planned to jump after Ruben had landed.

Instead, he contacted the emergency services when Ruben’s parachute failed to open fully. Police and medics arrived at the scene, but there was nothing they could do to save him. A new friend, Stefan Faber, said: “This is terrible news. I only met Ruben this summer when we base-jumped together. “Even though we had spent little time together, Ruben visited me various times in Alicante Hospital after I suffered an accident. “My friend, I will miss your smile and your joy. I send my heartfelt condolences to all who knew Ruben. Rest in peace, Ruben, and fly free on your wings.”

The Portuguese are tops, stopping after one hour and 45 minutes, and the Swiss and Austrians rank at the bottom, driving an average of two hours and 13 minutes on the road before resting. In Spain, the breaks last between 10 and 15 minutes on 34% of occasions, which is fewer than the average in 11 of the surveyed countries, but behind Finland, Poland and the UK. Meanwhile, 5.2% of Europeans recognise that they nearly always fall asleep on a long drive, although the figure drops to 2.3% in the case of Spain. Similarly, 27% of Europeans admit that they don’t stop for a break, for up to four hours behind the wheel. Finland has the highest number of accidents caused by driver fatigue (24.7%), while Portugal has the lowest rate (4.9%), and Spain ranks 11th with 10.8%. The profile in these kinds of accidents is a male driver between 18 and 24, who drives only now and again. He travels for work, has not had sufficient rest after more than four hours at the wheel, and takes breaks lasting no longer than five minutes. Alcohol consumption continues to be a serious problem for road safety. As many as 43.5% of Europeans admit to driving after drinking alcohol, with 22% always, or almost always, driving after consumption. In Spain, 14.4% always, or nearly always, drive under the influence, while this figure rises to 27.5% in Britain and 32.9% in France. The most responsible drivers in this respect are the Czechs, with just 6.3% drink-driving regularly. The RACE study winds up by listing some tell-tale signs that drivers should heed, with regard to weariness at the wheel: cramps, a sensation of numbness in limbs, itchy eyes and blurred vision, dehydration… and a sensation of drifting off!

Take extra care! WITH the sharp rise in temperatures, we would like to remind you to ensure that your dog has sufficient water and shade, and is only walked early in the morning and later in the day, to avoid the hot pavements which can burn your dog’s paws. Please do not, under any circumstances, leave your dog in a hot car. They can die in a very short space of time. Students We have, again, had German students from Ludwigshafen, helping us at the refuge, for the last two weeks. The dogs have had a great time, being pampered, walked, bathed and brushed. The students were very lucky to have been taken diving with the Tenerife Diving Accadamy, in Abades, who also help and support the refuge in so many ways, for which we are extremely grateful. The diving lesson was to teach the students about the harmful effects of pollution in the sea, and the plastic and rubbish that are killing our fish. We do ask that when you are enjoying your trip to the beach, to please consider this enormous, world-wide problem, and collect any discarded rubbish that you see. Every little bit helps to make the world a cleaner place.

Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on

664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. Renewed appeal for Mufasa! A FEW months ago, one of our staff arrived at K9, ready for a new day, and found this young boy tied up outside the kennels. She quickly came to learn just how sweet and friendly he is. He was called Mufasa. He had no chip, so we have no idea where he came from, or what his background is. Mufasa is about a year old, and loves to play and be around humans. A lot of our walkers love to take him out for his daily walk, and he is a pleasure to be with. He has unusual colouring, is a medium-sized mixed breed. He is one of the friendliest, happiest boys we have ever come across. The shelter environment can be stressful, but this young boy takes it all in his stride. Mufasa has been with us a couple of months now, and, in that time, has seen two kennel-mates go to their forever homes. He has shared with two female dogs, who he seems to get on best with, but, currently, he is sharing with one of the new arrivals, Kahl,

who is a very affectionate and playful male puppy. Mufasa is intelligent and has been trained before, from whatever home he came from. He waits patiently to be fed, and always comes when you call him, so he does have good recall. When he is outside, he is very calm and sweet, and is not really bothered by other dogs. He likes to get out for walks, and most days he gets out two or three times, because of his lovable nature, and popularity among the volunteers. He thrives on company, so

when his first kennel mate got adopted, he was a little bit lost and confused. We were able to match him quickly with another female, but she also got adopted quite quickly, leaving Mufasa, once again, lost and confused. When will he get the second chance at his forever home he so deserves? He is very handsome and friendly, and we are really hoping his chance comes, very soon. You can meet him at the shelter, and take him out for a walk, any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com Online shop We now have an online shop: www.k9tenerife.eu/ welcome-to-our-k9-shop. Deliveries to the UK only, so please spread the word among your family and friends in the UK. and is waiting for you to meet him!

Dear Editor, I know everyone is careful, but this is a friendly warning about a pickpocket, who is working the San Eugenio/Puerto Colon areas, and he’s really fast! I am 64 and have never been pickpocketed before. I have always been very careful, but I must have let my guard slip. I was walking back home at 4pm along Avenida Eugenio, past the H10 Grand, and was just approaching the Ibrox Bar. It was quiet, with very few people about, and this guy came walking towards me. He was holding a leaflet and spoke in a friendly way, to me, with a smile. But he was too close to me and the incident happened within 2-3 seconds. He placed himself on my right side, with my bag over that shoulder, between him and me. My mobile phone was in the front, upper right-hand side of my shirt and I immediately put a hand on my bag. At the same time, he put his hand on my left shoulder. I turned to push him away with my right elbow in his chest. But as I did, he turned with me to the right and, unknown to me, slipped his hand over and my phone was gone. When I turned around, he was walking away, quickly. I first looked at my bag, and saw that the zip was half-open, but my money and my card were all okay. It took me around 10 seconds to realise my phone had gone, and so had he! I am sure this guy tried the same thing on me about four weeks earlier, but it did not work out for him on that occasion. As it happens, the phone was old and I had new one at home, to which I was about to switch. It didn’t upset me that much, but it still hurts. You might think this is the end of the story. But three days later, I was on my bike, by the crossing into San Eugenio shopping centre, and stopped to let a guy cross. And it was him! He’s a short guy, 5ft 6ins, and slim, with dark skin and short black hair, with sharp-cut sideburns and a small gap in his front teeth, I pulled up, parked my bike and followed him into the nearby bank’s cash machines. He watched 5-6 people using machines and went to one himself. But he just went through the motions and then came out. I followed from a distance and he went to the BBVA cash machines by the Coconut Bar. He watched and did something with one machine, but did not spot a target. I followed him around three more cash machines. He failed to find a target and went down Avenida de Espana and up Avenida Enesto Sarti, always on the quiet side of the street. I tracked him to the Mare Verde complex, where, at one set of electronic gates, four people were coming out, and he slipped past them into the complex where I lost him. But I think someone in there lost something that night. A few people have told me that similar things have happened to them around here. However, I do a lot of walking and I’m sure I will bump into him again. And yes, the police don’t want to know, because the phone was worth nothing. But he could have grabbed my cards, and 120 euros! Yours sincerely, Andre Zembrzuski. Email: Andre@ORO2U.COM Editor’s note: Thank you, Andre, for a fascinating, detailed insight of how some pickpockets work. Cats Welfare News MEET Sansa and Snow! These adorable sisters are looking for a home together, because they cannot be separated. They were rescued from an abandoned boat, and are now ready for adoption.

They are about five months old, and are very friendly and playful. They are used to other cats, and like dogs. They are both very gentle cats, and do not bite or scratch. They use the litter tray without any problems, and have had their injections. Because of their white coats and Tenerife’s strong sun, they should be house cats. Adoption We have several other gorgeous kittens available for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside for them to frolic to their hearts’

content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, if you would like to enquire

about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Clothes required We are appealing, please, for good quality men’s and women’s clothes. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. We need you! Fostering kittens is very rewarding, watching them growing and playing, feeding them and realising how dependent they are on you. It’s perfect for people who don’t want a full-time cat of their own. We are looking for foster carers, to look after bottlefeeders and weaners, as well as big kittens. You would need to be able to drive, and have somewhere safe for them. All food and litter, bedding, litter trays etc. will be supplied, and any vet bills will be paid by us.

Please help us to help the kittens in need. Cats Welfare arrange the adoptions, once the kittens are ready. Please send us a Facebook private message, if you are interested. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven

days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. Look healthy and radishing! RADISHES may not be the most popular vegetable, but they are one of the healthiest. These undervalued root vegetables are packed with nutrients. They may even help, or prevent, some health conditions.

Health benefits Radishes have been used as a folk remedy for centuries. They are used in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, to treat many conditions such as fever, sore throat, bile disorders and inflammation. They won’t derail your healthy eating plan. They are low-carb, so won’t sabotage your healthy

diet. They are the perfect crunchy snack, when you feel peckish. Radishes are a good source of Vitamin C. Just half a cup offers about 14% of your recommended daily allowance. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps battle free radicals in your body, and prevents cell damage caused by ageing, an unhealthy lifestyle, and environmental toxins. It also plays a key role in collagen production, which supports healthy skin and blood vessels. Anti-cancer properties Eating cruciferous vegetables, like radishes, may help prevent cancer. This type of vegetable contains compounds that are broken down into isothiocyanates, when combined with water.

Isothiocyanates help purge the body of cancercausing substances, and prevent tumour development. A healthy digestive system Half a cup of radishes gives you one gram of fibre. Eating a couple of servings each day helps you reach your daily fibre-intake goal. Fibre helps prevent constipation by helping waste move through your intestines. It also may help you manage blood-sugar levels, and has been linked to weight loss and lower cholesterol. Radish leaves may be especially beneficial. They are a good source of fibere to help improve digestive function. This may be partially due to increased bile production. Radish juice may help prevent gastric ulcers by protecting gastric tissue, and strengthening the mucosal barrier. The mucosal barrier helps protect your stomach and intestines against unfriendly micro-organisms, and damaging toxins that may cause ulcers and inflammation. Antifungal properties Radishes are a natural anti-fungal. They contain the anti-fungal protein RsAFP2, which causes cell death in Candida albicans, a common fungus normally found in humans. When Candida albicans overgrows, it may cause yeast infections and invasive candidiasis. Helps reduce zen effects Zearalenone (zen) is a toxic fungus that invades many corn crops and animal feeds. It has been linked to reproductive problems in animals and humans, although the risk to humans is considered small.

Walk for Life joy! 23rd August 2019 - 29th August 2019

LAST December’s Walk for Life left us speechless, with over 5,000 people walking and raising over €35,000. It was simply amazing!

There were so many hugs, tears of happiness, signs of strength, hope and unity, with so many more emotions felt that day. It was a day for, and dedicated to, LIFE, which was made possible, thanks to all the people, the Councils and the sponsors, as the attached pictures demonstrate. So again, thank you to everyone. The sum raised was a huge responsibility for the Foundation, and we have now finished handing over donations to the different projects, chosen by the Board of the Walk for Life Foundation. These projects make helping a wide range of people possi-

ble, which is the Foundation’s goal. These projects are: Project Km Solidario Aecc (supporting the cancer bus from South to North Tenerife)

Project Amate (supporting its project of micro-pigmentation for patients) Project Risopérate of Pequeño Valiente Association (aid for the kids’ ward at the S/C

Hospital) VHIO Research Centre (for research on Liquid Biopsy and Advanced Molecular Diagnostic) Project Goodbag (to help people who need drainage bags after operations). We shall continue with our own BRA Project (donating free, new, therapeutic bras to women who’ve had mastectomies), which is also being implemented now on the islands of La Palma and La Gomera. And, hopefully, after the Summer, also starting in Gran Canaria. In September, we will begin our “LINFA Project”, helping women as well as men with lymphoedema problems after operations. And, after the Summer, activities for patients and their families at the Pink Room will also be increased. The objective and obligation of the Foundation Walk for Life is to raise funds, and use them to help and improve

the quality of life for as many people as possible. This is what we are achieving, step by step, together with your help, and with the help of the society. In 2019, we will celebrate our first “15 years Walking for Life”. And, no doubt, we hope to celebrate this special edition, together with you: firstly, with an anniversary cocktail, so please put Friday October 25th on your agenda. Then, towards the end of the year, we will obviously have Edition No.15 of Walk for Life, on 15th December. No doubt, it will be an extra-special occasion this year. Canarian Weekly obviously has to be present because it has been supporting Walk for Life all these years. An official invitation will follow, as we have a limited number of guests. Warmest regards, The Walk for Life Foundation Team

Restricted eating may help reduce risk of breast cancer

By Val Sainsbury CUTTING back on calories may help prevent breast cancer. To achieve the best anti-cancer effect, researchers recommend a time-restricted diet in which women only eat at certain times of the day. Studies, like the one from the University of Miami, link obesity to some types of cancer. In particular, obese, post-menopausal wom-

en are vulnerable to breast cancer. To reduce the risk of cancer in the breast, health-care providers advise their female patients to enrol in weightloss programmes. Usually, they recommend a diet that reduces calorie intake. However, a newly-published study from the University of California (UC) suggests that people don’t need to stick to low-calorie foods to reduce weight and avoid cancer. Instead, they would benefit more if they timed their

meals in a certain way, so that their body can burn more calories. “Time-restricted eating may be more successful than calorie restriction in controlling the negative effects of obesity, due to the hunger and irritability that makes it more difficult to stick with long-term calorie restriction,” said UC San Diego researcher Dr. Manasi Das. In a time-restricted diet, an individual may only eat within a specific period each day. Such a diet might deliver more positive effects on metabolism than calorie restriction. The UC San Diego researchers tested the effectiveness of timerestricted eating on a

mouse model. To replicate post-menopause conditions, they used female mice with no ovaries. During the first phase of the experiment, the mice subsisted on a high-fat diet. The obesity-inducing feeding period lasted 10 weeks. The researchers injected all the animals with breast-cancer cells for three weeks. They monitored tumour growth in each rodent, periodically. They permitted some of the mice to have unlimited access to food, while the other animals only received food during the eight-hour-long period at night, when they were most active. The researchers also

observed a control group of mice that consumed a low-fat diet, and were also injected with cancer cells. They compared the results between these animals, and the obese mice. The second phase of the experiment involved mice engineered to develop breast cancer. The researchers separated them into unrestricted diet and time-restricted diet groups, as well. All animals received a high-fat diet, and were also monitored for tumour growth. Finally, the third phase examined the role of insulin resistance in the growth of cancer tumours. The researchers inserted an insulin pump in mice, and fed them low-fat foods. They compared this group with controls that received a saline solution, instead of insulin. Meanwhile, they administered insulin-reducing diazoxide to mice fed a high-fat diet, and compared them with a control group that didn’t receive diazoxide. The researchers found that obese mice on a

time-restricted diet experienced less tumour growth than mice with unlimited access to food. The results also matched the outcomes for lean mice with unrestricted access to lowfat food. The researchers reported that tumours grew faster in mice with increased insulin levels from the insulin pump implant. Meanwhile, tumours in animals treated with diazoxide grew slower than the tumours in the control animals. “The results suggest the anti-tumour effect of time-restricted eating is, at least, partially due to lowering levels of insulin, suggesting this intervention may be effective in breast-cancer prevention and therapy,” concluded the researchers. “Exploring the ability of time-restricted eating to prevent breast cancer could provide an inexpensive but effective strategy, to prevent cancer impacting a wide range of patients, and represents a groundbreaking advance in breast-cancer research.”

AFTER a terrible season last year, and a pre-season showing many changes at the club, it was now time for CDT’s real work to begin.

10-man Tenerife are sunk by VAR

That was the initial challenge of the new campaign for Garai and his men, away to Zaragoza, who finished just one place above Tenerife last season. This was always going to be a tricky trip, but the hope was that we would see a more confident CDT, working as a group to give a springboard for a more positive, productive season ahead. As the game started, Zaragoza had a chance in the first two minutes, Shinji Kagawa putting through Dwamena and leaving the Ghanaian one-on-one with Adrià Ortolá in the Tenerife goal. Fortunately, his shot went wide of the keeper and grazed the outside of a post. This woke up CDT, who dominated for the next half-anhour and made Zaragoza look very ordinary, creating chances of their own. Malbasic had the best opportunities, testing home keeper Cristian Álvarez twice. First there was a header and, later, a one-on-one shot, both chances coming to nothing. But the Argentine again confirmed that he is the best keeper in the division. Despite the serious warnings, Real Zaragoza did not react and Tenerife had another chance, this time through Borja Lasso, whose shot went just centimetres wide. With almost 40 minutes gone, the home team started to get

and the third, a double opportunity when Kagawa got rid of his marker only for his shot to be blocked by Ortolá. The rebound went straight to Dwamena whose direct shot at goal was cleared by Carlos Ruíz off the line. Shortly after this, Ruiz, who had been on the pitch for just 24 minutes, was involved again, but this time in a negative way. He fouled Bermejo, received a second yellow card and was sent off. But it then went from bad to worse for CDT, when the referee called on VAR, the controversial technology, turning the foul on the edge of the box into a penalty. Zaragoza’s captain Javi Ros stepped up and calmly slotted the spot-kick past Ortolá to give the home team a 2-0 advantage, sending the La Romareda faithful into ecstasy after 88 minutes. With two minutes left on the clock, 10-man Tenerife couldn’t do anything to redress the balance, and the match finished with a disappointing loss for Garai and his players. But positives can be drawn. Tenerife had 63% of possession, and plenty of chances, which allowed them to dominate for much of the match. What they couldn’t do, though, was score. Let’s hope it’s not déjà vu, or a sign of things to come!

scoring goals,” said the coach, who does not want his players to “get too anxious”. After all, it was only the first day of the season!

CD Tenerife

in to the game, and some good inter-play saw Soro put

Luis Suárez on the ball. With devilish pace, he broke

through to face keeper Ortolá, and the Colombian kept calm, putting a strong, low shot in the back of the net to give Zaragoza a flattering 1-0 lead in the 41st minute. In the second half, the match went crazy, with opportunities for both teams. Tenerife attacked immediately, with dangerous crosses into the box, and two shots inside the area, which both went wide. Meanwhile, Zaragoza wasted three chances, two between Luis Suarez and Dwamena, that led to nothing,

that alarming inability to convert chances. He had two very clear opportunities to put them in front: firstly, a weak header, which he sent straight into the hands of home goalkeeper Cristian Álvarez, after a good cross from Luis Pérez. Later, he did not choose well when one-on-one again with the keeper, who saved the Balkan’s shot easily. Two missed opportunities, reminiscent of the scoring chances Malbasic let slip last year. The fact is that he has scored just 15 goals in 77 matches for the blanquiazul, six of which were last year in a campaign to forget; a campaign in which he

converted one of every five shots he made, or, that is, one every 5½ games, or 0.15 goals per game. This year, with competition from Dani Gómez and Ramón

Miérez, he will have to lift his game, which was mentioned by coach Aritz López Garai after the match. “If we generate so many chances, we will end up

Malbasic must score more! IT was only the first game of the season; it was only the first defeat of the season, and it was, possibly, an unfair scoreline.

But CD Tenerife have begun with the same symptoms of last year… the inability to score! This fact punished López Garai’s men in Zaragoza, and at the head of that goal drought is Filip Malbasic. Following a positive preseason campaign, the Serbian striker, who suffered from a small knock during the week, was finally chosen by the new manager to head the Tenerife attack, but he continued to show

Nadal secret’s out: He’ll marry Meri in October

MORE details have been revealed about tennis ace Rafael Nadal’s wedding to his childhood sweetheart, Meri Perelló, this autumn, even though the couple have tried to keep it a secret, as much as possible.

They became engaged last May in Rome, having been together since Meri was 16 and Rafa 19, but they did not appear in a hurry to tie the knot. Then, in January, ¡Hola! magazine revealed that they would wed this year on their native island of Mallorca. The leaked details annoyed Nadal, but reporters later said that his neighbours in Manacor refused to reveal anything, because they were aware

that Rafa and Meri were a very private couple. One neighbour said: “Rafael was just another local resident, whom we passed time with in the street.” Even though the venue and the date, Manacor’s Fortaleza estate, on 19th October, have now been revealed, security will be watertight, so fans will have no chance of gate-crashing, or newspaper photographers catching stealthy snaps. It was originally thought that Meri and Rafa would have a small, quiet wedding, in keeping with their preference for staying out of the spotlight. But it has been reported that some of their most high-profile friends, including Spanish tennis greats Feliciano López and Fernando Verdasco, are on the guest list, as well as the Rex Emeritus King Juan Carlos I, with

Jimmy breaks his Crucible title duck VETERAN Jimmy White, always a great favourite with snooker fans, won the World Seniors Championship at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre last Sunday, beating Darren Morgan in the final.

Having lost no fewer than six World Championships in his prime at the Crucible, the Londoner will be delighted at breaking his duck there. His victory could qualify him for the ManBetX “Champion of Champions” event, at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena in November, if other results fall in his favour.

whom Nadal is said to have an excellent relationship. The reception will be at the Fortaleza estate at midday, after the ceremony, which, according to information leaked in May, will be at a private but spacious abbey, in the north of the island, with nearly 600 guests, enjoying and food prepared by Quique Dacosta. The celebrity chef, who has three Michelin stars and eponymous restaurants in Valencia and in Dénia (Alicante province), will prepare two menus, one meat and one fish, showcasing Mallorcan dishes. But not for Nadal! He is on a strict dietary régime because of his profession, and he will be on lowfat, healthy dishes, comprising vegetables, mainly. Meri was 14 and a schoolfriend of Rafa’s little sister Maribel Nadal Parera when they met. Rafael was 17, but they did not start going out until she was in sixth form, and he had just left school. Their relationship is about as nonstarry as possible. Neither has ever had another serious partner, and they have been together for 14 years. Meri works for her future husband’s charitable foundation as project developer, alongside its chairwoman, Rafa’s mother Ana María Parera. Meri accompanies Rafa on every tour, wherever he plays in the world, but she has never lived anywhere but Mallorca. Both were born in Manacor, and Nadal’s fiancée studied her business degree at the university in Palma. She worked in the same city before getting a job with the Rafael Nadal Foundation, firstly in the PR department at electricity board Endesa, and then as assistant office manager at MAPFRE insurance.

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

Tom’s in the pink! LOS Abrigos bar El Ritual hosted one half of the Division 1 men’s singles, which is sponsored by San Blasbased Jet Excursions. After a night of fantastic darts, Pink Elephant’s Tom saw off the opposition to claim his final place, in which he will tackle Steve, from Suters 20:30 Crew. He triumphed in the other half of the draw, at The Palms Sports Bar, beating allcomers to set up what should be an excellent showdown. The Division 2 event was contested at the Pink Elephant bar, in Pebble Beach, and Emerald Lounge player Carl won through to the final, where he will be up against Rob,

from newcomers Club Activo. The ladies’ competition was played at Our Place, and Shar, on home ground, won through to the final, against Pocket Rocket Janice, from Mad Hatters. Congratulations to Gio, from Pas O Nadas, who scored two maximums, and Playgirls’ Julie, who also achieved a 180. Thanks to all the players, venues, markers and organisers, who again made this night so special.
