Three are dead from pork-based products

Continued from Front

It is the country’s biggestever outbreak of the disease, and the affected people all consumed crackling or scratchings from pork-based products, made by the La Mercha meat firm and distributed by Sevilla-based company Magrudis. As reported in last week’s Canarian Weekly, the Health Ministry was told on 10th July that a small portion of the processed shredded meat, Carne Mechada, containing the listeria bacteria, was sold to an Adeje cafeteria. As a result, Tenerife’s Health Department has made it clear that all batches of the La Mecha meat, manufactured since May, must be withdrawn. The department has stressed that its priority is to control the outbreak, then investigate how the outbreak occurred. Fortunately, none of the seven-strong family showed any symptoms of a serious nature, and they had all recuperated after 24 hours, with no one needing urgent medical attention. They all consumed the products before the contamination alert became

public knowledge. But it was discovered that the meat had been carried inside a suitcase, while the people travelled from Sevilla to the Canary Islands The product was, possibly, contaminated because it hadn’t been preserved in the correct conditions. The food was purchased in Andalucía, and eaten by the family when they returned back to the islands on 10th August. This information was released by Juan José Alemán, General Director for the Canary Islands’ Public Health

Department. Meanwhile, a third person has died in Spain’s biggest-ever listeria outbreak. A 74-year-old woman was confirmed dead at Sevilla’s Virgen del Rocio Hospital at 1.15pm on Tuesday. She was hospitalised on 12th August after ingesting the deadly listeria monocytogenes bacteria, and was among three patients transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). It followed the death of a 90-year-old woman, while two pregnant females were believed to have

Boy, 15, knifes his mother and father

A 15-YEAR-OLD youth, living with his British parents in Costa Adeje, is in a serious condition in hospital after stabbing them both in a frenzied knife attack, before jumping from a “considerable height” nearby. The drastic incidents happened on the Los Pueblos Avenue, in the Las Terrazas area, close to Las Americas bus station on Wednesday afternoon, in front of shocked passersby. And Adeje’s National and Local Police were at the scene almost immediately. The teenager, believed to have mental health

problems, is now in Hospiten Sur, Las Americas, under police guard, with “very serious injuries” after his fall, according to Spanish newspaper El Dia. His parents are being treated at separate hospitals, the mother in El Mojon and the father, who received severe injuries, was treated by an ambulance crew and then taken to La Candelaria hospital.

The boy is said to have thrown himself down a rocky slope near the bus station, after his attack. A National Police spokesman said: “All three are still alive, but their injuries are considerable. “Investigators believe this is not a typical case of family violence, but it may be linked to mental health problems the teenager is thought to suffer.”

miscarried as a result. Spain’s Health Ministry has released pictures of the affected meat, warning the public against eating it, in any form. Another death was thought to be that of a 72-year-old man, who had terminal pancreatic cancer, and the Ministry of Health is still investigating. Added to the listeria sufferers are a British man and a greyhound, confirmed on Tuesday after the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sevilla opened an investigation last Friday.

But the outbreak is thought to be decreasing in severity, slowly, with just three new cases reported on Tuesday, and one the following day. The deadly infection is expected to be under control within the next 15 days, said a Government spokesperson, while Andalucia Health Minister Jesus Aguirre confirmed: “We expect to have the outbreak under control in 10 to 15 days.” The Ministry of Health has published pictures of the food in question, warning the public not to consume the product, adding that if they have any unusual symptoms, they should visit a doctor. Listeria is a bacterial infection that can cause sepsis, meningitis and encephalitis, and, as has been proved, it can be fatal! Symptoms include a high temperature of 38°C or above, aches and pains, chills, feeling sick or vomiting, and diarrhoea. The infection mainly affects unpasteurised milk, dairy products made from unpasteurised milk, soft cheeses like camembert and brie, along with chilled, ready-to-eat foods, such as pre-packed sandwiches, pate and deli meats.

Arona to enhance all-round security, with extra officers ARONA Council, keen to strengthen its security throughout the borough, is hoping to fill 24 Local Police vacancies to achieve this aim. Councillors are anxious to bring the force up to its limit, and, up to Monday (2nd Sept), those interested in joining can submit their applications. Arona Council believes the extra number of police officers will keep the municipality safer all round, especially with its new services introduced this year, such as the El Fraile police office. A police spokesman said: “In this way, all vacancies allowed by the legislation have been assigned to the

Local Police, following the guidelines of the current government group for the next four years.” During that period, the Council intends to continue improving security in the municipality, with all the necessary resources. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said: “For the provision of extra police, we must add the new headquarters of the Local Police, as well as new material resources, such as a drone, and computer programmes that streamline and modernise the police management. “We will be working towards the number of officers Arona needs, and deserves, as the capital of the south.” The Council is encouraging young people, particularly, to apply to become police officers.

Thieving thug attacked man in the early hours

THE National Police have arrested a 37-year-old man, charging him with robbery, using violence and intimidation.

He assaulted another man during the early hours of Monday in Arenales, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. The thief snatched a watch from his victim’s arm before fleeing. He already had a police record after being charged with a staggering 19 similar offences, committed over the last few years. His current victim said in a statement that he was physically attacked by an aggressive individual, who grabbed him before snatching his watch from his arm. He told the officers he felt frightened and intimidated by the behaviour of his assailant. The investigation began with a detailed description of the thief, and officers immediately searched the area where the attack took place. It wasn’t before long that he was located, and, once detained by the officers, he was identified and charged. The thief, together with a police report, awaits a hearing before the judge.

Pilots don’t want to get green light while flying THE National Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy for shining a high-power laser at three pilots, landing aeroplanes at Valencia-Manises airport.

They found the boy on top of an apartment block in

the Avenida del Cid area of Valencia city, after being alerted by the pilots. The teenager, who was alone, carried a 16cm laser in his front pocket. The third pilot was able to give police the exact location of the boy. While agents were combing the area, the pilot confirmed the perpetrator’s position, using on-board location

systems. The teenager admitted to shining the green laser at aeroplanes, before police released him to his parents without charge. Spain’s Criminal Law for Air Navigation has power only to issue administrative sanctions for shining lasers at aeroplanes. In the US, the offence carries a five-year jail sentence.

Couple are charged with selling marijuana in club

HUGH Elliott, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1989, has succeeded Simon Manley as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, and nonresident Ambassador to Andorra.

He is now installed in his new role, having previously been Director of Communications in the Department for Exiting the European Union. On arrival, Mr Elliott said: “With a wealth of cultural, commercial, and people-topeople links, the relationship between the UK and Spain is like no other, and I am proud and honoured to represent my Queen and country here in Spain.” This strong connection with Spain has been an important part of his life for decades, and he added: “I met my wife, Toñi, while working as an English teacher at the University of Salamanca. “Spain was my first diplomatic posting in the 1990s, and my two children were born in Madrid… and I can understand why so many UK nationals have chosen to

make Spain their home.” The new Ambassador added: “We are approaching an important milestone as the UK prepares to leave the European Union, on 31st October.” His message, one of reassurance to UK nationals living in Spain, pledges: “We’ve given EU citizens living in the UK the legal certainty of their right to live and remain in the United Kingdom. And I’m pleased that the Spanish Government has put in place, through the Royal Decree, the same guarantees for British citizens in Spain.” Mr Elliott, who acknowledged that people had questions

and concerns, undertook that he and his team would be working hard to answer them. He also urged people to sign up to the Living in Spain Guide (gov.uk/livingin-spain), in which they will find the latest, accurate information on Brexit. Two key actions that UK nationals should do now is to ensure they are correctly registered as a resident, and registered for healthcare as a resident. Ryanair hits back at striking staff

RYANAIR has announced that the closure of its bases in the Canary Islands “is an irreversible fact”, because of the delay in deliveries of the Boeing 737 MAX, which were scheduled for this winter. The delay follows the suspension of building the planes, since the middle of March. And Ryanair says this has forced them to close some deficit winter bases, and reduce the number of aircraft in others, both in Spain and in other markets. The Irish airline, which plans to close the winter bases of Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Lanzarote and Girona, says that bases such as those in the Canary Islands “generate large losses during the winter season”, and that nearly all their traffic originates abroad. “That’s so it can be served by other airplanes, based in other countries of the European Union, without the high costs and inefficiency, resulting from basing airplanes and crew in the Canaries between November and March.” Ryanair has urged the USO and Sitcpla unions, who have a 10-day strike planned for September by cabin crew (TCP), and the Sepla union, which has announced five days of stoppages, to call off the strikes the airline brands “meaningless”.

The Irish company states: “These strikes are doomed to fail because the closures are irreversible in those winter bases until the delays of the delivery of 737 MAX aircraft are resolved.” Ryanair adds in its statement: “The strikes have no other purpose than to alter and disrupt the travel plans of our clients and families during the return of the summer holiday period.” In fact, Ryanair expects to cancel fewer than eight of its 950-plus daily flights to and from Spain on 1st and 2nd September, “thanks to the great work of most of our pilots and TCP, who have already confirmed that they will operate according to the planned schedule, or shifts will be offered to others to work on their days off, to minimise the disruption”. All passengers on the six flights cancelled this Sunday (1st September), and the eight cancelled on Monday, have already received email notifications, or SMS text messages, to inform them of their options: either a free-flight change or a full refund. The TCP, USO and Sitcpla unions, have called 10 days of strikes on September days 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29, after the mediation failure, although they will meet again in the General Directorate of Labour, with Ryanair representatives, to try to find a resolution.

A MARRIED couple have been charged by National Police with crimes against public health, after selling marijuana from a Cannabis Association, in the centre of Santa Cruz. An investigation began in June, when suspicions grew about the 35-yearold man and his wife, 36, using the premises as a cannabis club, in which

the public could purchase and explore their substances. The officers began to keep watch, witnessing several people frequenting the place, and they soon realised their suspicions were correct. The investigation came to a conclusion, when the officers searched the premises and found 1.7 kilos of marijuana buds, dried and ready for sale and consumption. They also came across other paraphernalia related to drug-selling.

NEWS IN BRIEF Truck-driver disturbs peace

30th August 2019 - 5th September 2019

Welshman dies in a random attack A BRITISH man was “beaten to death” in a random attack during a lads’ holiday in Tenerife, after leaving his Costa Adeje hotel to get some food.

THERE was a huge disturbance last Monday morning in a La Laguna street, when a lorry crashed, accidentally, into the terrace of a popular cafeteria, in a busy city-centre area. The truck was in between deliveries when the incident happened, but the driver was able to reverse into Bar Benidorm’s terrace tables and chairs. Although the event caused quite a commotion, that’s all it was, happily, because no one was injured.

Swordsman helps himself

A MAN wielding a huge curved weapon, known as a Katana sword, robbed a Puerto de la Cruz restaurant and stole 1,500 euros from the cash register, last week. He entered the Bodeguita Tito's, on the Camino del Durazno, at 10pm, and threatened the staff, before helping himself to the night’s takings. Unknown to him, however, the entire episode was recorded by the security camera, and the video shows the moment he removes the sword from his trousers. He approaches the bar, and, while insulting the staff, takes the money from the register, puts the sword back in his trousers and leaves the restaurant normally, as though he’d been a customer. He might not be so calm when he realises that he’s the bad guy in a new film!

Aged swimmer is critical

A MAN aged 69 was still in a critical condition after being saved from drowning at El Caletón natural pools, in Garachico last Wednesday. The incident happened at one of the larger Caletón pools, and the emergency services were notified just after midday. The caller requested an ambulance because the man had been seen struggling in the sea water, and nearly drowned. Ambulance medics assessed the man on arrival and stabilised him, before taking him to a nearby medical centre to be treated. He was stabilised by the medical team before being transferred to the University Hospital for further treatment and observation. Local Police officers were at the scene to assist with the emergency.

Michael Lewis, 23, from Rhyl, Wales, known as Liam Boland, or Brillo by his friends, suffered head injuries after being battered last week by two men. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital, but died two days later. Meanwhile, his assailants were arrested and charged with manslaughter. Michael had arrived in Tenerife four days earlier, and was believed to be staying at The Playa Real Hotel. His aunt, Karen Hughes, confirmed that her nephew had been “attacked, randomly, in the street when he went to get food, and suffered head injuries”, reported the Rhyl Journal. She added: “He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. He was always the person to step back and walk away. It’s a total waste of a life.” In a further tribute on Facebook, Ms Hughes said: “Today is a very sad day. It is with the greatest regret that

we have to inform everyone that Michael Lewis (Liam Boland) has, sadly, been taken cruelly from his family and friends. The youngster’s friends have set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs. One of the fundraisers wrote: “Liam/Michael was a very special person to many people. He was too young and innocent to leave us this way. We will miss him.” The tragic man’s parents,

Julie Lewis and Patrick Boland, flew out to be with their son after he had been taken to hospital. They are thought to be on the island still, and Ms Hughes said they were being “looked after by the British Consulate on Tenerife”. A Foreign and Commonwealth office spokesperson said: “Our staff are supporting the family of a British man, following his death in Tenerife, and we are liaising with the Spanish police.”

Avocado thief turned to violence on farmer GUARDIA Civil’s La Orotava officers have arrested a 43-year-old man for committing a violent robbery. His accomplice, a woman aged 40, was also charged after being investigated.

The incident happened last Sunday at a secluded farm on the outskirts of La Orotava, when the farmer realised that someone had broken in and was stealing avocados. When confronting the thief, he was taken by surprise and found the man’s hands around his neck, strangling him with the chain he was wearing, And, as he struggled for breath, he was pushed against a wall violently. The thief then fled, taking with him a backpack filled with eight kilos of avocados. He ran to a small exit in the farm wall, where a woman was waiting in a parked-up vehicle, ready to speed off.

Following his assault, the farmer notified the Guardia Civil, who investigated the events immediately, especially taking into account the assailant’s violent nature. It wasn’t long before officers identified the thief, who was

arrested and charged. He is currently waiting to be presented before a judge, The woman in the getaway car, who turned out to be related to the attacker, was also charged, on the grounds of being his accomplice. She also awaits a court date.

FOUR Britons are among 85 suspects arrested in one of Andalucia’s biggest police operations for many years, the Guardia Civil smashing six international criminal gangs.

In the process, they recovered 5.2 tonnes of hash and 17 weapons, including an AK-47, as well as 49 vehicles, 26 of which were stolen. The alleged crimes include drug-trafficking, belonging to a criminal organisation, theft of vehicles, forgery of documents and illegal possession of weapons and explosives, in addition to bribery and conspiracy for kidnapping and murder. The investigation, named “Operation Balbi”, began a year ago and led to arrests in Marbella, Manilva, Ojen, Estepona, Monda, La Linea, Los Barrios, Pinos Puente, Gojar and Lachar. Officers also seized 322 marijuana plants, 7kg of cannabis and €141,000 in cash. The four-man Brit gang, operating from a Malaga house in Istan, are understood to have trafficked hash to the UK. A police statement said the group posed as a haulage company, using the Port of Santander to transport the drugs. Investigators discovered the group had used trucks with hollowed-out bottoms to conceal their cargo. Officers seized 1,100kg of hashish from the gang, believed to have been taken in Istan, as well as a further 1,500kg in Marbella. After police busted a Moroccan gang, based in the Guadalhorce Valley, the Guardia Civil said it then had sufficient information to begin Operation Balbi. Five people were arrested and charged with stealing 22 vehicles, which were supplied to other drug gangs. A Spanish gang, based

Police took 56kg of hash, three boats and four stolen vehicles from the collective, which is said to have trafficked drugs to other European countries. A police spokesperson said the group used “extreme violence to maintain internal

discipline”. It is alleged that the gang conspired to kidnap and murder an ex-member who was accused of trying to steal hash, worth €1m. Another of the brokenup gangs had houses in Monda and Ojen, which acted as “nurseries” to hide drugs. Among the haul that police seized from this organisation was €108,000 in cash, two

arrested after employing what police described as the “go fast” method to transport drugs from Spain to France. Operation Balbi involved a collaboration between Malaga’s Court No.1, the Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office and law enforcement in the UK, France and Italy.

Emperor Tamarins enjoy Loro Parque’s family life

SUMMER has welcomed new births in Loro Parque, with two young Emperor Tamarins arriving to join a family which began to grow last year, when the first offspring were born.

This news is evidence of the animals’ wellbeing in the Parque, and how well

A GERMAN family of four were killed in last Sunday’s helicopter collision with a twoseater plane in Mallorca.

Businessman August Inselkammer Jnr, his wife Christina and their two children, Max, 11, and Sophie, nine, died instantly. The Bell 206 helicopter, taking them to an upmarket restaurant for the father’s birthday lunch, hit a light aircraft. Italian helicopter pilot Cedric Leoni, who worked for a German company called Rotorflug at its Mallorcan base, also died in the fatal collision, which took seven lives in all. Two Spaniards, pilot Juan Jose Vidal and his friend, Gustavo Serrano, travelling in the microlight plane, were also killed in the island’s worst-ever air crash. Mr Inselkammer, who came from well-known brewing entrepreneurs, had been heading to lunch with family and friends at a restaurant in Camp de Mar, near Andratx, when he died. The family’s friends, who should have lunched with them, ended up travelling by road after one of the two helicopters

established are the Saguinus imperator pair. With this species, it is the male, or another member of the group, who carries the offspring until they become independent of the parents, and gives them to the mother from time to time for nursing. Two pairs of twins have already been born in Loro Parque; the first a year ago and the second recently. Now, they can all be observed

enjoying family life in their home. Emperor Tamarins originate from the forests of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru, where they feed mainly on fruit, flowers and nectar, as well as small animals such as frogs, snails, lizards, spiders or insects. The Emperor Tamarin has characteristic whiskers, claws instead of nails on all fingers, except the thumb, and two teeth instead of three on each side of the jaw, both

aspects which differentiate it from other monkey species. Fortunately, it is listed as a species of least concern on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), so it is not at risk of extinction. However, the size of its populations is declining, and its habitat is shrinking because of the residential and commercial development and forest clearing, among

other threats. At Loro Parque, this family act as representatives of their peers in nature, helping to make visitors aware of the importance of protecting wild animals and their natural habitats. In addition, it promotes knowledge about the species, and its reproduction and breeding. And this information is also extremely valuable for the protection of populations in the wild.

German family die in copter-aircraft crash

they had booked was too small. The helicopter, piloted by Mr Leoni, was sent to the luxury Hotel La Reserva Rotana Manacor, close to the house where the Inselkammer family were staying. An insider said: “The man and his family were holidaying with another family, and staying near the hotel. They were known at

the hotel from the previous times they’d stayed there. “It was the man’s 43rd birthday, and the two families had arranged for the helicopters to pick them up. “The other family ended up going by road because one of the helicopters had capacity for five and the other could carry only three, including the pilot.

“I understand it was a last-minute decision that the man whose birthday it was should take the bigger helicopter with his family, and the other family should catch them up in a car.” The collision occurred near Inca, in the centre of the Spanish island, and the tragedy was the second in recent years to hit the

Inselkammer family, whose business interests include private brewery Ayinger. August’s cousin, Jannik, coowner of another brewery in Munich, was 45 when he was killed in an avalanche during a skiing holiday in Canada, in March 2014. Last Sunday’s crash, which happened just after 1.30pm in the municipality of Inca, in the centre of the island, is being probed by the Guardia Civil, along with Spanish air-accident investigators. The wife of light-aircraft pilot Juan Jose Vidal, known to friends by his shortened name of Juanjo, is said to have witnessed the midair collision from Binissalem Aerodrome, from where the two-seater plane had taken off. A minute’s silence was held at midday on Monday for the victims, and Regional Government President Francina Armengol, on Sunday, decreed three days of mourning.

King Juan Carlos recovers from a triple heart bypass

SPAIN’S retired monarch, King Juan Carlos I, is still in intensive care following a triple bypass operation in a Madrid hospital. But he is said to be “in excellent health”, despite his ordeal, and should be moved into a mainstream ward shortly. The 81-year-old Rex Emeritus was admitted last Saturday, for the planned surgery, which had been booked in mid-June after his last, complete, routine health check. His son, King Felipe VI, whom he abdicated in favour of in June 2014, visited his father in hospital last Sunday and said: “He’s been very brave.” Although they have lived completely separate lives for many years, communicating through their secretaries only, Queen Sophia, King Juan Carlos’ wife and mother of Felipe VI and his two sisters, also visited her husband at the Quirónsalud

University Hospital, in the Madrid commuter town of Pozuelo de Alarcón, and was approached by reporters as she left. Queen Sofía, pictured with King Juan Carlos on an earlier occasion, said: “You wouldn’t know he’d had an operation. “He’s slept well, he’s awake and has eaten now, and he’s in an excellent condition.” She said her husband was even able to sit up in a chair, but he “couldn’t stay

Juan Carlos I is in good humour, though, she revealed. “He’s really relaxed, joking around and everything.” The rest of the family will be visiting “bit by bit”, now that

the former king is recovering from surgery, she said. King Felipe and his wife, Queen Letizia, were the first to visit after Queen Sofía, spending around 90 minutes by his bedside. They have since told reporters he had

been “very brave”, but was still in intensive care for the moment. “He’s progressing well, but he needs to be patient because they can’t rush these things,” said the reigning monarch. “It’s a big operation, it’s not just any old thing. “Although he has the usual aches and pains, he’s getting along very well, and all within what the doctors consider ‘normal’ for surgery of this type. “We don’t know when he’ll be moved on to a ward yet, but it could be a matter of hours.” Reporters asked Queen Letizia directly how she thought her father-in-law was, and she replied: “I thought he seemed really brave, in truth.” Felipe VI said: “My father has not lost his sense of humour and seems very jolly. There’s not much for him to complain about.” Once he is out of intensive care, the retired monarch will be visited by King Felipe’s sisters, and by his grandchildren, who include Princess Leonor, 13, and 12-year-old Infanta Sofía, the daughters of Felipe VI and Letizia.

THE inhabitants of a tiny village in Peraleda de la Mata have been stunned by the emergence of a 4,000-year-old “Spanish Stone-henge”, which seemed to rise out of the ground like magic.

For the village of just 1,400 residents, in the province of Cáceres, which is attached to the autonomous community of Extremadura, the “miraculous” event confirmed a local legend about buried treasure in the area.

Ancient sun temple has appeared again, after a 60-year gap

In reality, this summer’s baking heat caused the water level of the Valdecañas swamp in Extremadura to drop more

than usual, thus exposing the historic site of Guadalperal. This ancient sun temple, dating back to the Third

Millennium BC, has poked its head above water during previous dry spells. But, until now, it had not been

seen for six decades. Angel Castaño, President of the local archaeological association, said: “It is a megalithic dolmen of great value which now, for the first time, and who knows if it is last, is completely accessible. “We grew up hearing about the legend of the treasures hidden beneath the lake, and now we finally get to view them.” There are 144 standing stones in total, with some topping two metres tall, while many are decorated with carvings of serpents. But they were submerged when General Franco built a dam in the area in 1963. The returning holiday-maker, in his early 20s, was “horrified” at the repercussions. But he was arrested, and his innocent mistake could lead to a heavy fine, or even imprisonment! He had just got off a flight from Bangkok, after a break

in Thailand, and was set to catch a connecting flight, via Lufthansa to Madrid, from Germany’s second-busiest airport. But after popping to the toilet upon disembarking, the man found the fellow

passengers he had been following had already gone on ahead. Unsure of which way to go, he started walking, but headed the wrong way down the passage. When he pressed a button, to open a door he

thought led to the next stage of his trek to the boarding gate, he discovered, too late, that it was the back door to the one-way-only security checks. And, on his attempt to access the restricted area, alarms were set off across the airport. Normally, to get into the area, a non-Schengen-zone passenger would have had to jump security checks, immediately flagging up a safety issue. Standard procedure for this type of situation meant all travellers had to leave security and re-enter… and part of the terminal was evacuated!

This led to dozens of planes being cancelled immediately, and, as normal queues in the check-in area did not recover all day, delays continued, leading to more flights being grounded. The total added up to 130, not counting the late departures. In all, 1,200 arrivals and departures had been planned for last Tuesday, adding up to around 120,000 passengers set to travel. The culprit, who was arrested and could face criminal charges, told the police he was “horrified” that his honest mistake had shut down an entire airport.

Blazing mad… the man who began fires, to put them out! A MAN sparked eight fires in Mijas… so that he could help firefighters put them out!

He was accused of starting the eight fires, only to return later to help firefighters extinguish the flames. The incidents happened between 28th May and 13th July, and the last blaze alerted suspicious police to arrest the man. Investigations found that all the fires had been started deliberately, so the police started a surveillance operation. On 13th July, a new forest fire in Loma del Flamenco burned an area of approximately 6.25 hectares, and, with a hot, dry wind blowing, the potential of a much bigger blaze existed. “Luckily, the fire could be controlled, thanks to the rapid and effective intervention of the Plan INFOCA,” said the Junta de Andalucia, in a report. On the same day, a man was arrested for allegedly starting the fire. But at the time of arrest, the suspect was helping put out the flames. The report said: “The

detainee’s modus operandi consisted of starting fires, either by direct application of a heat source, or by leaving a lit cigarette on fine, dry grass, causing the fire to start after a slight delay.”

The report added that the alleged arsonist left the scene, to return once firefighters were tackling the blaze. He would then assist by helping manhandle hoses. Investigators found

that the same man had appeared at all the fires as a volunteer. But he has now been reported to the courts for further action, and, since his arrest, there have been no more forest fires in Mijas!

Activists from the “Smash Speciesism” group posted a video to Facebook on Tuesday, claiming they had targeted two Tunbridge Wells slaughterhouses, owned by Forge Farm Meats, in in the early hours. Members of the group told a daily newspaper: “We have locked ourselves on to machinery, with the intention of remaining inside the building and blockading the killing of animals for as long as possible.” The group, which sent two sets of people to access the site’s kill floor or the waste silos, added: “It’s to ensure that our eviction will need climbing police and specialised operatives, who know how to cut lockons”.

A COLOMBIAN man, aged 53, has been detained by National Police in prison, with no bail, after posting “upskirt” videos of 555 women online.

He used a rucksack with a specially-positioned cell phone to record the footage, targeting women in public places such as the Metro and supermarkets in Madrid. A rucksack, perfectly-adapted to the task and a strategicallypositioned cell phone, were the tools he used to record images of women’s private parts, with his victims totally unaware of what was occurring. He carried out the surreptitious recordings in public places such as the Metro system, the Cercanías train network and supermarkets, later uploading the footage to a porn website. The police calculate that he was able to record 555 women in recent years, including some minors. And, if possible, he would also record their faces. The man would record up the skirts or dresses of his targets via a technique known as “upskirting”. Investigators discovered that he published his first video in July 2018, but they believe he could have been doing the same thing previously, using another method, or via another website. Since last year, he has published 283 videos, in which the

30th August 2019 - 5th September 2019

Seedy Colombian took hundreds of ‘upskirt’ pictures

555 female victims are seen. Analysis of the videos determined that he had repeated and perfected his approach. He had created a profile that had 3,519 subscribers, 84,594 visits and a total of 1,367,999 views of his posts, according to police sources. The pervert lived in the Usera district in the south of the Spanish capital, and worked in a warehouse in the Pinto municipality. He lived alone, took advantage of his journeys on public transport to record all the

women he could, and also used his free time to produce the videos. Roberto Fernández, the Police Chief Inspector in charge of investigations relating to technology, said the man had a “normal appearance” and led a quiet life, which had aroused no suspicions about his illicit activities. The police have decommissioned hours and hours of his recordings and are now analysing the footage. The man edited the images, setting them to music and even add-

ing slow-motion effects when the women’s private parts or faces appeared, according to the chief inspector. His modus operandi consisted of placing the rucksack, complete with cell phone, just under his target. The phone was inside a side pocket, which also carried a balaclava, which protruded slightly. It was all sealed up with duct tape and a zip so that it could not be seen from the outside. The women he targeted most were wearing miniskirts or short dresses, but he did not differentiate when it came to age or nationality. There were two minors among the victims. “The women never realised he was filming them,” said Fernández. “At most, they were bothered by having the rucksack so close to them and would move away.” He revealed that the man would make recordings every day in a compulsive manner, adding: “He had more and more experience, which saw him gain confidence and take

more and more risks. The police followed the man’s trail for a number of weeks before identifying him, and discovering where he lived and worked. The authorities have also been in contact with possible victims, who have filed complaints against the alleged culprit. He will now face charges for breach of privacy, as well as abuse, prostitution and corruption of minors, having recorded two adolescent girls. “We have not found any profit-making intentions behind these recordings,” said Fernández. “He was motivated by his sexual lust, but he has no prior criminal record.” Investigators were put on the man’s trail after they became aware of the videos recorded in Madrid on a porn website, with more than 20 million followers, the world over. The police arrested the man while he was in the process of recording up a woman’s skirt. The suspect confirmed to the police that he was the author of the videos, and he was detained while using the black rucksack with the cell phone. Officers discovered three hard discs and a laptop in his home, which contained dozens of gigabytes of videos of his victims. So far, investigators have managed to identify 29 of the women recorded, in just five days. The judge in charge of the case has ordered the suspect to be held in custody with no bail.

‘Werewolf syndrome’ such a hairy outcome

THE number of “werewolf syndrome” cases has grown, with 16 children taking contaminated medication from Spain’s Costa del Sol.

The infants developed hypertrichosis, which is excessive body hair growth, after having omeprazole, contaminated by minoxidil, which is the active ingredient for alopecia medication. Some 13 babies had initially been diagnosed with the condition, before three more cases, linked to the tainted drugs, were discovered earlier this month. Officials believe the contamination could have affected up to 30 Andalucian pharmacies, and more than 50 batches of the drug. Malaga-based pharmaceutical company Farma-Quimica Sur SL has been discovered as the source of the tainted batch. On 11th July, the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products ordered the withdrawal of several, affected supplies. The affected batch is from lot 11072/10/42, and most have been recalled, while any missing packets are being tracked down. Parents have been advised to seek medical help if their child has been

given the formula, and to check with their pharmacy whether they have purchased an affected lot. Hypertrichosis, known as “werewolf syndrome”, is a rare condition, characterised by excessive hair growth, anywhere on a person’s body! Those with the condition have, historically, been subject to great interest, and, in some cases, forced to perform in travelling circuses and freak shows. Spanish authorities say this incident is isolated to the children’s formula, and that adults taking omeprazole capsules shouldn’t worry about developing symptoms. Health sources have noted that when the children stopped taking the prescription, their hair growth subsided.

Consumer groups and police warn of a scam CONSUMER group FACUA, along with other organisations and police, have warned about hoax telephone calls and messages

They reveal that there has been another round of phone scams and hoaxes, including calls with a Chile country prefix, and WhatsApp messages, telling users not to eat pork. FACUA-Consumers in Action said on Twitter: “Whether or not they have spelling mistakes, usually a giveaway sign that a message is a hoax or virus, never pass on food alerts via WhatsApp, unless they come with a link to a reliable source.” It says a viral message has gone around, warning users not to eat any pork products, in

light of a listeria outbreak in Sevilla which has affected at least 155 people, including a baby, and claimed the life of a 90-year-old woman. Andalucia’s regional health authorities have withdrawn all products from sale,

which come from the firm whose meat has caused the outbreak. But no other official warnings have been released. The WhatsApp message reads: “Latest news on the listeria case . Do not eat pork

bruised victim, and were ordered to pay the money within six hours. Danish authorities had been searching for the victim, who had an arrest warrant out for drug-trafficking offences. Officers found the Dane in a locked, first-floor room, before the kidnappers’ deadline. The man had a displaced collarbone, severe fractures to his elbow as well as bruises and puncture wounds all over his body. Another man, 23, was arrested inside the house

on suspicion of kidnapping, possession of weapons and membership of a criminal group. A revolver, €3,835 in cash, and drugs, were also found in the property. Officers managed to locate the Dane, before the deadline set by the kidnappers, in a locked firstfloor room. Another man, 23, was arrested inside the house on suspicion of kidnapping, possession of weapons and membership of a criminal group.

Beaten and kidnapped, but police rescue Dane A KIDNAPPED man aged 30, from Denmark, was rescued by police on the Costa del Sol after being held captive for 10 days.

National Police released the man, who had suffered serious physical abuse in a Marbella house. Police in Denmark had notified authorities in Spain after the man’s parents received a €165,000 ransom demand. They also received photographs of the

products until the issue of where they come from has been clarified. It appears they come from an abattoir in Sevilla. This is being investigated. This has been communicated to us this afternoon.” Yet a punctuation error, a space between “case” and the full-stop, gives a clue that the message is a fake, and who the “us” in the last line is has not been made clear. “As health authorities have pointed out, the only meat affected is the La Mechá brand, owned by the Magrudis company, and production of it was stopped in May. But it was still being consumed recently because it had a use-by date of three months from manufacture.” The Trade Federation for Meat Industries (FECIC) says national consumption of any kind of meat is not affected.

Meanwhile, National Police have warned phone users not to answer calls with a country prefix of 0056, for Chile, unless they know someone who lives there. Then, they should check that the number corresponds with that of their relative or friend, or contact them via other means to see if they have rung. Calls are normally made between 4-11pm mainland Spain time (3-10pm in the Canary Islands), claiming a family member has been kidnapped and demanding a ransom. But the National Police stress on Twitter: “However realistic it sounds, don’t fall for it, don’t pay, and do report it!” And on Twitter, they say: “Don’t fall for this blackmail. It’s what is known as a ‘virtual kidnap’. Stay calm, and call us on 091.”

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks.

Hopes that the UK government might be able to reach a withdrawal agreement with the EU, before 31st October, sent sterling soaring last week, but the currency started giving up its gains, once these expectations were dashed. The GBP/EUR exchange rate has jumped from €1.07 to €1.10, over the last fortnight, while EUR/GBP has fallen from £0.92 to £0.90. Meanwhile, GBP/USD stren-

gthened from $1.20 to $1.22. The pound staged an impressive recovery in midAugust, as PM Boris Johnson met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and French Premier Emmanuel Macron. His meeting with these EU heavyweights gave rise to hopes that a solution to the Irish-backstop issue could be found, and that the UK could still leave the EU with a deal, on 31st October. GBP/EUR gains were particularly notable, as the euro struggled in the face of European Central Bank (ECB) stimulus speculation, and Italian political uncertainty. However, over the last 24 hours, GBP/EUR has reversed some of its recent uptrend, on the news that Boris Johnson has asked the Queen to move her mid-September speech to October, effectively suspending parliament, until it will be too late to stop a nodeal Brexit. With the 31st October deadline fast approaching,

Brexit headlines continue to be the main catalyst of GBP fluctuations. If it looks as though the Oppositions’ attempts to prevent a nodeal Brexit will be thwarted, the pound could slide. Investors will also be focusing on the UK’s construction, services and manufacturing PMIs. Signs of growth may lend GBP some support.

Elsewhere, Eurozone retail sales and growth data will be in focus, as will US durable-goods orders and employment figures. Boris Government break causes fury among opponents

PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson, who has taken a controversial decision to suspend Parliament, has received approval from the Queen… but fury elsewhere.

The suspension will take effect from 10th September until 14th October, just two weeks before the proposed date for Brexit of October 31. But it is alleged that the move was proposed to prevent MPs from blocking the UK from leaving the European Union. The move has sparked anger in the country, with politicians believing that the PM has “sidelined Parliament”. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has accused him of launching a “smash and grab against our democracy”, and has also written to the Queen to express his concern, and request a meeting at the palace. The Prime Minister asked

for the Queen’s permission on Wednesday morning, before sending a letter to every MP, detailing his plans. The Queen’s role in suspending the parliamentary session was predominantly procedural, and she had approved it, officially, by Wednesday afternoon. In his letter to MPs, the Prime Minister wrote: “This morning, I spoke to Her Majesty The Queen to request an end to the current parliamentary session in the second sitting

week in September, before commencing the second session of this Parliament with a Queen’s Speech on Monday, 14th October. “A central feature of the legislative programme will be the Government’s number one legislative priority, if a new deal is forthcoming at EU Council, to introduce a Withdrawal Agreement Bill, and move at pace to secure its passage before 31st October. “Member States are

watching what Parliament does with great interest, and it is only by showing unity and resolve that we stand a chance of securing a new deal, that can be passed by Parliament. “In the meantime, the Government will take the responsible approach of continuing its preparations for leaving the EU, with or without a deal. ‘Should I succeed in agreeing a deal with the EU, Parliament will then have

the opportunity to pass the Bill required for ratification of the deal, ahead of 31st October.” Johnson has defended his decision by saying: “There will be ample time, both sides of that crucial October 17th summit, and ample time in Parliament for MPs to debate the EU, to debate Brexit and all the other issues.” As a result of this decision, the pound has crashed by more than 1% against the euro and the dollar. Several Tory Remainers said they would back a vote of “no confidence in Johnson’s government”, while opposition MPs have suggested that they will not leave the Commons if the doors to Parliament are closed. A No.10 source said: “It’s time a new government and new PM set out a plan for the country, after we leave the EU.” In response to the news, Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: “This will go down in history as a dark one indeed, for UK democracy.”

Rise of the Nazis

A powerful three-part forensic examination of how Germany turned from a liberal democracy into a brutal murderous dictatorship in just four years. In 1930 Germany was a liberal democracy, but just four years later the country is ruled by a dictator and its government is in the hands of murderers. Rise Of The Nazis is a powerful threepart forensic examination of what happened in those four short years. The series reveals that the Nazification of Germany was as much about ruthless personal ambition and a desire to hold onto power by more moderate politicians as it was about extreme ideology. The series will also expose the power struggles between prominent Nazis which helped transform Germany into a brutal police state, allowing Hitler to transform himself from Chancellor to all-powerful Fßhrer of the Third Reich. Along with dramatic reconstruction and archive footage, historians and experts, including Professor Sir Richard Evans, General Sir Mike Jackson, Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, and Ash Sarkar, take viewers inside the heads of the historical characters who were key players, and pick apart the events in the Nazis’ rise to power. Each episode also reveals one of the many resistance stories, acting as a reminder that there were those who understood what was happening and were prepared to act. In a political climate that is dominated by concerns about the rise of populism, nationalism and disunity, this series is also a timely look at the fragility of democracy.

Untouchable: The Rise And Fall Of Harvey Weinstein

Celebrity Catchphrase

Stephen Mulhern hosts a celebrity special of the classic game show, with Anton Du Beke, Gemma Collins and Paul Sinha all trying to guess the well-known phrases from the animated clues. If they can ‘say what they see’ they could get the chance to win the £50,000 jackpot for their chosen charity.

This feature-length documentary from the producers of the Oscar-winning Man On Wire and Searching For Sugar Man tells the inside story of the spectacular rise and fall of movie titan Harvey Weinstein, revealing how he acquired and deployed his power. From his early days as a music promoter in Buffalo NY, to founding the powerhouse movie company Miramax with his brother Bob, the film traces how he allegedly abused women with seeming impunity - with the complicity of many in the film industry - throughout his career. Many contributors, including accusers and co-workers, are speaking on camera for the first time. In candid, emotional and often painful testimony, the women who came forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault tell their stories in detail, including Rosanna Arquette, Erika Rosenbaum and Paz De La Huerta. Former industry colleagues and school friends reflect on his extraordinary career and the carefully cultivated public perception of Weinstein as a visionary; while the reporters from the New Yorker and New York Times who broke the story which brought his career crashing down, detail his ruthless attempts to preserve power, even as scandal threatened to engulf him. A modern parable for our times and for future generations, Untouchable: The Rise And Fall Of Harvey Weinstein reveals both the method and collateral damage of Weinstein’s alleged abuse. With his criminal trial due to begin in the US in September, and while he continues to be investigated for sexual assault in the UK, the film raises important questions about whether the powerful are truly beyond justice, and whether meaningful change really is possible.

A Confession

Monday 2nd September, ITV1, 21.00

A quiet relaxing Saturday morning in the picturesque surroundings of a countryside hotel is cut short for Elaine O’Callaghan (Siobhan Finneran), as a worried phone call from her son Liam O’Callaghan (Jake Davies) causes her to come home early. The date is Saturday 19th March 2011, and Elaine’s daughter Sian has not come home to the house she shares with her boyfriend Kevin Reape (Charlie Cooper) from the night before, and naturally concerns begin to arise within Sian’s tight-knit family, regarding her wellbeing. Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Martin Freeman) of Wiltshire Police is the on-duty S.I.O. for what he had hoped was going to be a quiet weekend at home, but when the call comes in on the Saturday afternoon that local girl Sian hasn’t returned from her Friday night out, Fulcher’s instincts tell him that this is no ordinary missing person case. A briefing from officers who have been to speak to Sian’s family does nothing to allay the rising fears Steve has for Sian’s safety, and a search for the missing girl ensues. As the search ramps up and gains media attention the next day, the news of the missing girl strikes a chord with Karen Edwards (Imelda Staunton), who due to an unusual set of circumstances hasn’t seen her own daughter Becky Godden-Edwards (Stephanie Hyam) for over eight years. She wishes the local girl will make it home to her own mother safe, whilst hoping that her daughter Becky will one-day do the same. The initial investigation by Steve and Wiltshire Police doesn’t turn up many leads, but a mobile signal ping from Sian’s phone off a cell-tower mast near a local beauty spot – Savernake Forest - in the early hours of Sunday morning, is something that takes everyone by surprise. Elaine and Sian’s father Mick (Ian Puleston-Davies) gather Sian’s family together and keep her in their thoughts, as the local residents of Swindon decide to take matters into their own hands and join the Police in the search for Sian in Savernake Forest. Just as the investigation threatens to run into a dead-end, with a search radius of 6.2miles proving impossible to cover, it emerges from CCTV footage that Sian had taken a ride in a car outside the nightclub she attended on the Friday night. The image is grainy and although neither the model of car nor number plate can be identified, the girl is definitely Sian. And with DSI Fulcher now knowing that he needs to look for one of fourteen potential vehicles spotted on ANPR cameras as a result of the CCTV find, he makes the decision to treat the disappearance as a crime-in-action, on the basis that Sian is still alive somewhere and needs to be found.

Interior Design Masters This week’s task is all about designing for small spaces - and where better to test the designers on this than a student halls of residence? Each designer is given a small studio to design that must allow room for sleeping, studying and socialising. The designers are divided into two teams, and told there’s a twist to the task: as well as revamping the student studios, they also have to redesign a student kitchen on a very tight budget. With only two days to complete their makeovers, they need to decide how to make the best use of their time to ensure they get their studios finished, but also to complete the shared kitchen on time. As the task progresses, it soon becomes apparent that the designers are taking a very different approach to the rooms, with some going super ambitious and completely changing the footprint of the spaces, while others play it safe, sticking to a simpler but less ambitious plan.

BBC2, 21.00

The stress is beginning to get to Bob as he attempts to finish the editing of Lenny, which has considerably overrun, and he reflects on both his past and his present life in terms of a Lenny Bruce routine. Gwen is preparing for the first day of the rehearsal for Chicago, where she has a cast-iron contract with the producers, with approval over almost every aspect of the production. As rehearsals begin Bob experiences chest pains and visits a hospital emergency room. As he undergoes tests, Bob suffers a heart attack. Arriving at the hospital Ann tells Gwen that he shouldn’t be doing Chicago. Gwen arranges with a Broadway-loving doctor that Bob is given his own room, and assures Bob that Chicago won’t proceed until he is better, postponing the show until next year. In the persona of a Lenny Bruce routine Bob reflects on his early years in the business, with a father calling him a ‘faggot’ for wearing make-up, but refusing to let him stop since the family needed the money he brought in. Reflecting on being seduced as a 13 year-old by strippers, Bob wonders if this has affected his relationship with women, and wondering whether his heart operation has affected him as a man, Bob persuades girlfriend Ann to make love to him in his hospital bed.

Rowing World Championship BBC1, 13.15

Matthew Pinsent and Katherine Granger present live coverage from Ottensheim in Austria, where the world’s best rowers have the dual aim of winning medals and securing their place at the Olympics. An impressive 23 nations won medals at the recent World Cup regatta, so competition will be stiff. Britain topped the medals table at the 2016 Olympics with three golds but didn’t win in any of the Olympic classes in Bulgaria last year, with Italy finishing first in the medals table for the second year in a row. Today’s finals include the men’s and women’s fours and quadruple sculls. Race commentary comes from Garry Herbert and James Cracknell.

Emily Atack and Joel Dommett present a new dating show in which five different couples pause their relationship and head to London for a summer as singletons. This autumn, Singletown sees five real-life couples press pause on their relationships to spend one incredible summer experiencing the single life and all it has to offer in arguably the world’s most fun capital city. The couples - or shall we say, freshly separated singletons – have chosen to put themselves ‘back on the market’ and immerse themselves in London town’s glamorous and vibrant dating scene to see if their ‘real life’ relationship really is the one for them. Each couple has a different reason to put their personal partnership on ice and take this ultimate test of love – from high-school sweethearts who have only ever dated each other, to commitment phobes who wonder if the grass really is greener, to long term partners in need of a summer of self-discovery before they settle down. Having said farewell to their other halves, our newly uncoupled singletons begin their month of fun by moving into two super-swanky multi-million-pound flats on the banks of the River Thames – but what they don’t know is their exes are just across the hallway.

In the series finale, three students at Britain’s very own Top Gun academy find out which of them, if any, can pass their concluding aerial combat and mission tests and ultimately be selected to fly the new F35 Lightning fighter jet. The school’s only female student, Danners, has an injury which could threaten her participation in the course, after injuring her back playing squash. She says: “The consequences for me can be quite significant. if it’s a more long term injury it could put me back on the course, so it could delay my graduation. And worst case it could be potentially career limiting, which is obviously something that I’m quite keen to avoid.”

Darkly comic, surprising and inviting, this series will take us into the heart of an often overlooked corner of the country, as seen through the eyes of the cops and the charismatic, witty and complex people they police. A documentary series with unprecedented access to Durham Constabulary and the communities of Peterlee and the surrounding areas on the North East coast. Years of austerity have disproportionately affected the North East of England, and County Durham is now home to some of the most acute areas of deprivation in Britain. This is a region that was once the epicentre of England’s Industrial North East, and the birthplace of the steam railway. But now the pits and the factories have closed, and the thriving railway industry has gone. For the communities who live here and the officers charged with keeping them in line, there’s no place like home. Life might be tough and towns might be astonishingly remote, but everyone connected with this part of the world is bound by a humour as dark as the pits themselves. Nevertheless, high levels of crime and drugs mean the police have their work cut out for them. But when you’re on first-name terms with the criminals, it’s hard not to do the job with a smile on your face and go the extra mile to get people on the straight and narrow. Filmed over seven months, this raw and revelatory documentary series takes you both sides of the custody cell door and into the heart of a community that doesn’t mince its words.

Take a group of 14 young volunteers aged 18 to 24, place them into the NHS, and see if they can make a real difference to both patients and staff alike… This four-part documentary series - inspired by a social care programme in Germany follows 14 young people as they’re put to work on the wards at the Royal Derby Hospital. It could be a life-changing experience for the young volunteers, who will be thrown in at the deep end, looking after patients and assisting staff as they go about treating patients in the maternity wards, A&E, paediatrics, elderly care and everything in between. But the volunteers won’t be parachuted into the wards completely unaware. Before they are allowed near the patients, it’s the job of Clinical Educator Andy to train them- and as he observes: “It’s a big job, I’m very nervous. They could kill somebody.” Senior nurses and sisters guide the volunteers through the intricacies of hospital life as they face the most gruelling weeks of their lives. Could it be that these young people can help lighten the load of our NHS staff? How will they cope with the blood, sweat and tears of hospital life? And will the brave leap of faith made by hospital bosses prove to be a success?

It also features exclusive access to the police and legal team who have spent more than four years bringing gang members to justice.

He heads to Plymouth, Massachusetts where the pilgrims first landed on American soil, followed by a meeting with the Native American tribe who almost had their people and language wiped out, until it was revived in a pre-school class of children. Then to Boston, and home to possibly the naughtiest group of nuns on the planet. From there Billy heads to Gloucester, the oldest sea port in America, home to blue whales, the most bizarre fisherman’s tradition and the scene of the Perfect Storm. After which he heads to the graveside of the most famous man you never knew was a Scot - Uncle Sam! before wrapping things up at the haunting Ellis Island, through which millions of immigrants passed, although some never made it past its hospital’s walls.

Couple’s easyJet ban - over ‘fraud’ tickets

Deadly tiger mosquitos can hold the Zika virus

AN urgent appeal has gone out to expats to be vigilant over the threat of tiger mosquitoes, or face hefty fines.

A LIVERPOOL couple have received a lifelong ban from easyJet, for unknowingly presenting fraudulent tickets to Alicante, at the airline’s departure gate.

Kenny Rainford and wife, Marie Rylance, were forced out of the airport by easyJet staff, who accused them of falsifying tickets which were, in fact, purchased on an Instagram page entitled “Half Price 3652”. The site was recommended to Kenny by a friend, who had used it before, successfully. The couple have flown with easyJet many times, because it is the only airline offering that particular flight to

Alicante during the summer evenings, when Marie is able to get out of the classroom for a quick weekend break from being a teacher. EasyJet has released a statement in which it advises customers to book their tickets directly through the company website, instead of going through a third-party provider. But, as the demand for cheap flights increases, more people turn to pricecomparison platforms such as Skyscanner, which are used the world over. The investigation is ongoing into the case of Kenny and Marie, who believe they have been treated unfairly. Perversely, the couple are still sent promotional deals by easyJet, even though they are blacklisted!

The warning follows the alarming rise in this aggressive breed, especially in the Costa Blanca region. Valencia City Council has taken the drastic step of fining residents who allow any areas of water to build up around their properties. Anyone caught with a pool of standing water, in which mosquitoes can multiply rapidly, now faces a fine of up to €3,000. All home and business owners are now obliged to empty all containers with stagnant water, which encourages the pests’ larvae. Health Councillor Emiliano García, said the programme was to warn and inform, adding: “The objective is not to sanction, but to make people aware that they have to take measures against this breed of mosquito.” An unknown number of the dangerous insects carry the potential lethal Zika virus. Also, they are also far

more aggressive than their European cousins, and can bite through clothing and spread other diseases, such as dengue and yellow fever. Until recently, these illnesses haven’t been prevalent in Spain, but their ability to adapt to different environments has resulted in their spread.

Garcia added that they need just a small volume of standing water to reproduce, such as water in plant pots or puddles. Fines start from €25 and rise, depending on levels of danger and negligence. So far dozens of people have been admitted to hospital after being bitten.

Police injured in rave’s ‘violent, pitched battle’

POLICE arrested 73 people when busting an illegal rave in Ibiza, which erupted into a violent “pitched battle”, leaving 11 of the 40 attending officers injured.

Some 200 people confronted the police, and officers from the Guardia Civil and Local Police said they were hit with iron bars and missiles, including rocks. The rumpus came as they broke up the unauthorised party in the early hours of last Sunday morning. One officer was said to have had fired his gun in the air to stop being attacked at the woodland site, near Cala Comte, in the west of the White Isle.

Police said there were trucks and caravans with number plates from other countries in the area. But, said Guardia Civil chief Enrique Gomez: “When officers arrived to tell them they had to leave and stop the music because it was an illegal party in a protected area, they refused to do so, provoking police, and even assaulting them and injuring several.” Fortunately, the injuries were “non-serious”, and were treated by paramedics at the scene. Meanwhile, a Spanish woman, 27, and a 30-year-old Italian man were both hospitalised with broken bones. Police also seized several “dangerous dogs” at the party. At its height, around 1,000 ravers were believed to have been in the area.

Brit drug courier group’s final delivery, to officers! FIVE British men and women have been arrested and jailed after National Police busted their cannabis “delivery service”.

The three men and two women, aged 38 to 62, were carrying 100kg of drugs, intended for the UK and other countries,

when the officers pounced. They found 52kg of hash and weed, along with 51kg of vacuum-packed marijuana buds, as well as around €23,000 in cash. The detainees are accused of running a Malaga-based courier service, which also distributed to Denmark, Poland and Sweden. According to police, the Brit suspects would change their

rented cars and apartments frequently, to keep officers off the scent. But in May, drugs weighing 58kg were intercepted at a courier office, with another 17kg discovered in August. Once they had been identified, police conducted raids on the suspects’ homes, in which they found a further 28kg of drugs.

Beach cleared after live bomb is found

AN unexploded bomb, discovered on the sea bed at the popular beach of Sant Sebastian, on the Barcelona coastline, led to an evacuation of sunbathers last Sunday.

The device was spotted by an off-duty police diver, who was swimming in the area at a three-metre depth, some 25m from the shoreline. Police soon evacuated the area and imposed a 250m barrier to prevent onlookers straying too close. Experts suggested that the

device could date back 80 years, to the Spanish Civil war.

The deactivation took place the following day, when the beach was declared safe.

Military pilot killed as his jet crashes into sea THE body of a military pilot, whose jet crashed into the sea last Monday in the La Manga Souk area, off the Murcia coast, has been found.

Commander Francisco Marin Nunez managed to eject before the C-101 training aircraft crashed. But, tragically, his body was later recovered from the sea by emergency personnel. The jet was filmed by onlookers as it hit the water at high speed, and San Javier Mayor José Miguel Luengo reported that it had plummeted. Authorities closed three beaches, to enable workers to recover debris from the stricken plane. Police said the jet was on a training flight, when the

pilot experienced unknown difficulties. Hundreds of calls were made to the 112 emergency services at around 9.30am. The C-101, a veteran Air Force training aircraft, was

acquired in the 1970s from the CASA company. It continues to be used by the General Academy of Air of San Javier (Murcia) as part of its advanced training programme.

A WOMAN who suffered permanent trauma after plunging 10 feet on to concrete from a holiday resort’s staircase, is suing her travel operator for the care she will need forever.

Wendy Brown, 56, was three days into her La Palma holiday with her new husband Gary, 55, when she fell from the unguarded staircase while returning to their room, suffering severe head and spinal injuries. She was airlifted to hospital in Tenerife where she had emergency surgery, and spent two weeks in an induced coma. Mr Brown stated in court documents that he suffered psychological trauma after witnessing his wife’s fall, including post-traumatic stress disorder, an intense phobia of motorway driving, and depression. He feared she was dead after finding her unconscious and bleeding from a head wound, and it was only when she responded to his emergency resuscitation, and started to breathe again, that Mr Brown realised his wife had survived the fall. The couple, from Bollington, Macclesfield, are now suing holiday firm Tui UK for £200,000 damages. They claim the company was negligent, and in breach of contract, for its failure to provide reasonably-safe accommodation at La Palma & Teneguia Princess Hotel, during their January holiday last year. In papers lodged with the High Court, they say the drop should have been protected by a rail or barrier, and claim that, following the accident, the hotel erected a wooden fence at the spot where she fell. Mrs Brown, a former telecoms worker, has suffered from a catalogue of mental and physical problems following the accident, including severe fatigue, disturbed sleep

and poor concentration. She underwent brain surgery, and also had metalwork fitted to stabilise her spine, while still in Tenerife. And, says her legal team, she continues to require significant rehabilitation support, because her injuries still have a devastating impact on her and husband’s daily lives. Her sight is damaged, her speech has been reduced to a whisper, and she needs help in walking. Mr Brown, who had to give up work to look after his wife, has launched a GoFundMe page to help raise some of the funds he needs to do so. “We were walking back to the hotel room and Wendy was slightly behind me when she fell,” he recalled. “As there were no wall or railings, she plummeted on to the concrete below. “She was initially unconscious and I performed CPR, before she was taken to hospital, and placed in an induced coma. To see her in such a condition was awful, and I have still not come to terms with the incident.” He added: “At the moment, we simply do not know what the future holds. But we are doing everything we can to ensure that Wendy gets access to the best levels of support.” But the holiday company has blamed Mrs Brown for the accident, claiming she was negligent. Tui says the path was lit at the time of the accident, the edge was protected by raised edging stone, and a thickly-planted border up to 80cm high. In court papers. Tui argues that to fall, Mrs Brown must have stepped over a series of edging stones, through plants and over some coping stones, and that she must have failed to take enough care to stay on the pathway. Tui states in its defence: “It is denied that the use of the steps, pathways and terraces posed the alleged or any hazard to hotel guests when used in ordinary conditions, or in any conditions other than the most extraordinary.”

K9 Animal News BACK in March, Babe was surrendered to K9 by her owner because she had to move to a new apartment, and wasn’t allowed to have animals. We are urgently looking for a forever home for this young cat. She is a year old, and having trouble settling in at K9.

She is very friendly and FELV-FIV negative, but she is extremely stressed in our cattery. She has not settled with our other cats, one of which has been making her life very uncomfortable. Babe’s unhappiness is having a knock-on effect with our other cats, who are also becoming very stressed. A lot of stressed cats is not a good situation, so we really need to find her a new, loving home. Ideally, she would be a lot happier if she were the only cat.

Wine and Dine

30th August 2019 - 5th September 2019

ASPARTAME is a synthetic sweetener that is marketed as a lowcalorie product, and is often used in conjunction with diabetes management and weight loss.

The controversial sugar substitute is an ingredient in thousands of food and beverage products, worldwide. Aspartame contains only four calories per gram, and is 180-200 times sweeter than sucrose (common table sugar). This artificial sweetener is highly touted by “Big Food” as being “safe for human consumption”, and is commonly found in foods and beverages, such as diet drinks, chewing gum, sugarfree ice cream, reducedcalorie fruit juice, yogurt and sugarless sweets. Aspartame was discovered, by chance, when two substances were mixed together and inadvertently ingested. It is a synthetic compound of phenylalanine and aspartic acid, and 10% of its molecular structure is methanol (methyl alcohol or wood alcohol). It is produced as the

by-product (waste) of genetically-modified, E. coli bacteria. When the body breaks down aspartame, it creates wood alcohol and formaldehyde, which are not exactly substances that the body finds beneficial. Wood alcohol can cause vision damage and blindness, while formaldehyde (used in embalming fluid) makes the body more prone to infection, and can cause pneumonia.

Chill Out bar and restaurant Chill Out bar and restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, including Chateaubriand and Dorada al Sol. Why not come and dine, whilst watching the sun setting over Las Vistas beach, truly a beautiful setting to enjoy a lovely meal.

Aspartame is not safe - it is poison. Few substances have been studied as extensively as has aspartame. Many of those studies were sponsored by food-industry insiders, who stand to gain from the continued use and sale of their coveted, artificial sweetener. On the other hand, one survey, conducted by non-industry sponsors, revealed one or more health

problems associated with aspartame. Among the myriad of health problems are various cancers (brain, breast, leukaemia, lymphoma, peripheral nerve), loss of cognition and neurological function, memory loss, brain lesions, brain tumours, headaches, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, migraines, mental disorders, depression, seizures, vision loss, mild rashes, fatigue and kidney-function decline. Aspartame is addictive, as most poisons are, and sudden cessation can lead to withdrawal symptoms like irritability, fatigue, flulike symptoms, headache, brain fog/decreased concentration, anxiety and depression. into thinking it is getting a sugar fix, only to leave the body unsatisfied. When “regular” sugar is eaten, dopamine is released in the brain, and bloodsugar levels rise, causing a secondary stimulation to produce dopamine. When eating artificial sweeteners, dopamine produces the initial sensation of pleasure, but the second effect doesn’t occur, because sugar-free sweeteners have no impact on blood-sugar levels. As a result, the body sends signals requesting more food, to compensate. It seems like a contradiction, but the consumption of aspartame can, in this way, actually lead to weight gain. The bottom line is that this artificial sweetener should be avoided at all times. When in doubt, take the time to read the food label. If it says aspartame, put it down and grab something else!

IN this issue, we are going to remind you of why it is important to keep your address and other details up to date, bearing in mind recent fatal, and near-fatal, accidents, that have occurred in the South of the island. In past years, your full name and address would appear on your vehicle’s “permiso de ciculacion”, as did it on the old-style, paper driving licences. However, times and technology have moved on, and, with the introduction of data protection, Tráfico no longer print your address on the “permiso de circulacion”, nor, indeed, on the Spanish Driving licence. Most will be aware that, here in Tenerife, you are normally

The importance of keeping information up to date

identifiable by your NIE or DNI number, from which the authorities can find your address, when necessary. So far, so good. However, many people rent property here, and move fairly frequently, but most do not give a moment’s thought to advising Tráfico, Hacienda and the Seguridad Social of the change of address. Sometimes, this can become very costly. Why, one may ask? Well, for example, if you get a speeding ticket, or other fine or infraction, which is delivered by post, and your address is wrong, you will not receive it. The official line is that a minimum of two letters are sent (sometimes more), and then the “debt” is passed to Hacienda. They, too, then issue several letters, and if there is no response, the details are then listed in the Oficial Boletin, which is published daily. The first you may know of such a fine is when there

is an embargo on your bank account, or money has been taken, about which you know nothing, in some cases clearing your account completely. This doesn’t stop you putting money in, you just can’t draw the amount embargoed. If your address at Tráfico had been up to date, you would have received the first or second letter, and could have dealt with it, accordingly. This also applies

to fines, non-payment of social security etc. There are also other reasons why your address should be up to date. In the event of a fatal accident, the police may need to contact the next of kin or responsible person. We always recommend that in your phone you have Aa contacts. These are people to whom you can contact, in the case of an emergency. However, not only does it mean that you, if you are

able, can contact them, but, in emergency situations, the Aa contacts are accessible by the emergency services from your phone, even if it is locked. What you should do is to enter in your contacts like this Aa Andy Smith 629 123 123, for example. The police can then call this person if you are unconscious etc. It is also important that you are aware of all medications you take, and any allergies, and most Apple and Android phones have an app which enables you to record your medical information, emergency contacts, allergies, doctors who you are seeing etc. This can prove lifesaving if, for example, you are taking blood thinners, and are involved in an accident. Not only does this apply when you are driving. As a pedestrian, you should always have identification with you, in case of an accident, illness etc.

before it. So the next time you force yourself to get off the sofa and get into workout mode, you’ll most likely feel more energised throughout the rest of the day. And more energy equals greater happiness. It boosts your confidence When you don’t feel good about your body, or how you look, it’s all too easy to have low self-esteem. And that can have a negative effect on all areas of your life, including your relationships, your career, and your

goals and aspirations. But when you start to exercise and see your body transform, that can quickly change. Because exercise will not only make you like how you look, it will also make you feel stronger, more independent, and more confident. There’s nothing like a boost in confidence to increase overall happiness. It eases anxiety If you suffer from anxiety, exercise may be a simple cure. Recent studies on the effects of exercise show that, in people suffering from anxiety, the immediate mood boost from exercise is followed by longer-term relief, similar to that offered by meditation and talk therapy. So, next time you’re feeling anxious, try a hard workout. You’ll feel happier, for days on end. It fights insomnia If you have trouble sleeping, skip the sleeping pill and try exercising, instead. Staying active, and exercising on a regular basis, has been shown to improve sleeping problems of insomniacs, and people with sleeping disorders. And not only can regular exercise significantly improve your sleep quality, it can also give you that pep that makes you want to get out of bed in the morning!

Keep active, stay happy!

By Val Sainsbury EVERYONE knows that exercise is good for you. It keeps your weight in check, makes you stronger, and keeps you feeling youthful. It also helps to keep you stay active into old age. But you may not realise that exercise can also make you a happier person. When you work out and stay active, on a regular basis, it’s not just a coincidence that you feel less stressed and anxious, and generally happier. There are several reasons why exercise makes you happy: It releases happy chemicals into your brain Dopamine, a chemical that plays a role in happiness, is a neurotransmitter in the brain that’s necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness. Many studies suggest that, as we age, we’re constantly losing our stores of dopamine, which is why we need to constantly seek out experiences that release it. The best way to increase your brain’s dopamine production is exercise, so run, lift, jump, play - and get happy. It makes you less stressed out

Not only will working out ease stress in the short term, by helping you sweat out the day’s worries, regular exercise will help you become less stressed out, in the long term. When you exercise, you’re subjecting yourself to a low-level form of stress by raising your heart rate, and triggering a burst of hormonal changes. When you subject yourself to the stress of exercise often enough, your body will eventually get better at handling the rest of life’s stressors. And less stress

equals a happier, healthier life. It energises you Everyone has days when they just feel too tired to exercise, when working out is the last thing in the world they want to do. But no matter how exhausted you are from a long day at work, taking care of your family, or recovering from a busy weekend, do your best to muster up all the willpower you have, and still work out. More likely than not, you’ll feel more energised after exercising, than you did

CD Tenerife TENERIFE secured their first win of the season, at home to Numancia, but they were better than the scoreline showed, having had three goals disallowed through VAR, one of which should have counted.

In addition, the video arbitration gave validity to Numancia’s first goal, despite the strong possibility of a foul on Ortolá, and after a very long wait. The result of such interruptions was almost eight minutes of extra time, in which Numancia made the final score 3-2, to screams of “Tebas, go now” from their fans in the stands, referring to league President Javier Tebas, who has openly criticised Numancia recently. In addition to the controversial VAR system, the heat and humidity also affected a game that lacked rhythm, especially in the first half, when Numancia were comfortable and Tenerife weren’t under pressure. Numancia had the first chances after 17 minutes, with a crossed shot by Héctor and a long shot by Curro, which tested CDT keeper Ortolá. Tenerife had the ball in the net seven minutes later, after Malbasic collected Suso’s pass. But VAR ruled it out for offside against the Tenerife captain at the start of the move. Malbasic had another chance three minutes later, when he stole the ball from Carlos and crossed in to the box. But Numancia keeper Dani Barrio, was able to intercept it, easily. Until this point, the best chance had fallen to the away team, after an absurd handball by Alberto on the edge of the area. Marc Mateu took the free-kick, but his shot went inches wide. Then, just before the break, Tenerife broke through. Milla took a well-measured corner from the right side, and a diving Borja Lasso powered home an impressive header from the penalty spot area, giving the home side a welcome lead in what looked like a well-practised set piece. Tenerife began the second half with some of their best football, trying to capitalise on their advantage. Naranjo had a goal ruled out by VAR in the 49th minute, but Suso made it 2-0 shortly afterwards, following after a blatant handball by Numancia defender Derik. No need for VAR in this decision!

Battling Tenerife are off the mark CD Tenerife 3 CD Numancia 2

Six minutes later, Tenerife had the ball in the back of the net again when Malbasic slotted home after a great drive forward from Tenerife defender Sipci. The referee ruled it out after a long wait for VAR, yet TV footage seemed to favour the home team, so, ultimately, this goal should have stood. Although CDT seemed very much on top and could have been leading by five goals, the match reignited again in the 65th minute, thanks to a massive misunderstanding between Ortolá and Sipcic. Ortolá passed the ball out from a goal-kick, and Sipcic decided to pass it back. But the pass was too light and Higinio sneaked in, rounded the keeper and put the ball into an empty net. Again, the officials called for VAR as it looked like an obvious foul on the Tenerife keeper by Higinio. But this time after another prolonged interruption, the referee said the goal stood, making it 2-1 to Tenerife. But Tenerife, despite the interruptions or decisions going against them, stayed

positive and continued to push forward, and it paid off almost straight away. Following some bad press, striker Malbasic, who was playing well, rounded off a good performance with a well-headed goal in the 69th minute from a deflected cross by Luis Milla to make it 3-1 to Tenerife, with still 20 minutes to play. That 20 almost turned in to 30, with eight minutes add-

ed on for delays during the game, primarily through VAR intervention. But Numancia sneaked a second after six of those extra minutes, after a good counter-attack resulted in Curro being set up in front of goal, leaving Ortolá helplesss. At the final whistle, Coach Garai’s men could be proud of a good, first home performance, and a good first win of the season, as they

showed a lot of improvement in all areas. Just two games in, and CDT have started positively, in mid-table with three points. Their next game is on Sunday, away to Ponferradina, who have had a loss and a draw in their openers and sit second-bottom. Let’s hope Tenerife can gain some momentum and build on a positive start to the season.

after the completion of a delayed third round, ran up a double bogey on the seventh, and carded a hat-trick of bogeys on the back nine, to slip into a tie for third place, with Justin Thomas. A year ago, McIlroy played alongside Tiger Woods in the final round, but the 15-time Major winner was victorious at East Lake. And, just weeks ago, McIlroy partnered Koepka on the last day of the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational, carding a 71

Gaffers are riding high GAFFERS claimed top spot in the league, following last week’s round of games, as they put seven past Emerald B. Tomo hit another 180, and Daniel a 111 check-out (T19, 18, D18), though Jackie did give him something to think about, hitting back at him with a 92 finish (20, T12, D18). Mark also had a say in things, as the only 3-0 winner on the night. But, sadly for Emerald B, he was also the only winner for them, in the 7-1 defeat. Loch Inn Bullseyes were away to Suters 20:30 Crew, and the home team showed their form, with an 8-0 success. However, a couple of matches could have been different, if only the doubles had been hit. Sounds familiar! But Craig,

for Bullseyes, did well, with a 101 finish. Zurdo hit a fine 110 check-out, for Pas O Nadas International, as they completed a 7-1 home win against Mad Hatters. It was small consolation, but at least Harvey scored a maximum for the Hatters. Palms Sports Bar hit the top of Division 2, winning the trebles for an 5-3 triumph at local rival’s Picasso’s, and credit to the Sports Bar’s Peter, for his 180.

Marilyns welcomed Sundowners to Silencio, and, although their darts are improving, they went down 6-2. Similarly, Naughty Nautas travelled to Clouseau’s, and emerged as 6-2 winners. Scooters & Chevys B proved too strong on their home board, triumphing 6-2 over Pas O’Nadas. Club Activo continued their good run, in a close encounter with Emerald Lounge, running out 5-3 winners. It is always close when OurPlace local derby games take place, and the clash between Breakaways and Playgirls proved no exception, the boys taking the trebles, to record a 5-3 win. By the way, it would help Martin if teams sent him a bit more info. He can’t write it, if you don’t tell him!
