Sufferers are given full programme of support Scientists knock wind farms as renewable energy sources

Continued from Front

Pura Martín met with AECC Provincial President Andrés Orozco, and Inés Grillo, Regional President of the South of Tenerife, to sign the grant for this project, which began in 2017. The programme offers psychological advice on specific issues of cancer diagnosis, treatment or recovery, return to daily life and therapeutic support, as well as the necessary adaptations in the case of permanent, long-range or death, as a result of the disease. It also offers a complete programme of support for patients and families, which also includes a transport service, facilitating the transfer of patients from the municipality to the Canarias University Hospital and the Candelaria University Hospital. Because of the number of people affected, and the health threat posed by cancer, with repercussions in all areas of life, the AECC has carried out a study that shows the initial approach to addressing the disease process is fundamental, psychological attention. Data demonstrates, even more so, the importance that this project can achieve in the improvement of the quality of life of those who suffer from the disease, and who seek transversal support during the recovery process.

ENORMOUS wind farms are said by some to be the “renewable” energy source of the future. But two Harvard scientists beg to differ! Improving the quality of life is a top priority for Arona Council, so maintaining a programme of this type is essential for the municipality, which also has other projects. These include swimming pool activities in municipal facilities, aimed at mastectomised women, which further aids the needs of patients. Health Department Councillor Pura Martín said: It is a necessary and fundamental project for patients, and family members of the municipality. “The subsidy guarantees

the continuity of this service, with which people feel a real, therapeutic and psychological support, from the first moment in which they are immersed in a situation of this type.” She added: “Underlining, we continue with our commitment to fight against cancer, and these actions will always be within our priorities.” *The Service Centre can be reached at: Calle Montaña Chica, número 4, Los Cristianos, and the telephone number is 922 096 845.

They say they have discovered that the spinning blades of these mighty metal machines create more climate warming than coal plants. This is one prominent example of the fossilfuel energy, which, claim climate alarmists, is creating global warming. In fact, wind turbines are more “polluting”, in terms of the heat they give off, than any fossil-fuel energy source currently in use, which demonstrates that so-called “clean” energy is, at least in this case, a myth.

The paper, published in the Joule journal, concludes that if all the electricity demands of the US could, suddenly, be supplied by nothing but wind turbines, the surface of the continental states would increase in temperature by 0.24 degrees Celsius. This figure is vastly greater than the 0.1-degree Celsius temperature reduction that climate fanatics are aiming to achieve by “decarbonising” our nation’s electricity sector, before the end of this century. “If your perspective is the next 10 years, then wind power actually has, in some respects, more climate impact than coal or gas,” says David Keith, a professor of applied physics and public policy at Harvard, and one of the study’s two primary coauthors.

South airport voted worst in the world! TENERIFE South airport has been voted the world’s worst, finishing 106th in a survey by luggage-storer provider Stasher, with Tenerife North placed 23rd. Leading the field was Moscow Sheremetyevo, followed by London Heathrow, Piarco (Trinidad & Tobago), Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Copenhagen. Jose Maria Cordova (Colombia), Adelaide, Calgary,

El Dorado (Colombia) and Hamad (Qatar) completed the top 10. The rankings were based on eight airport-related factors: Google reviews; quality of restaurants and food; access to shops; number of lounges; likelihood of delayed flights; airport hotel quality; distance to city centre and cost of carparking. “Our new study has produced some fascinating and unexpected results,” said Stasher co-founder Anthony Collias. “It seems that location alone

isn’t a deciding factor for how good or bad an airport is, because both the top and bottom 10 lists cover all four corners of the globe. “Many travellers are in ‘holiday mode’ as soon as they arrive at the airport, so it’s positive to see that many airports are highly rated when it comes to passenger experience.” He added: “Others have a lot of room for improvement, particularly by improving food quality, expanding the number of shops, reducing delays and capping parking costs.”

British mum, ‘abandoned’ her three-month-old baby

A BRITISH mother has been arrested after “abandoning” her baby in an Adeje street, which, said police, followed a drunken argument with her partner. The tourists are believed to have argued in a restaurant, before the 24-year-old woman stormed out with her three-month-old baby boy. Police then spoke to the child’s father, before tracing the woman to a nearby hotel, where the couple had been staying. A National Police spokesperson said: “When the woman was questioned

about her child’s whereabouts, she gave no explanation about where he may be, saying simply that she couldn’t remember.” A priority search started and the pram was found, with the baby inside, in about 30 minutes, on Adeje’s Avenida de Bruselas. Once the baby was found to be in a good state of health, he was returned to the father, while officers arrested the mother. She is believed to have appeared in court, but the details have not yet been made public.

Canaries’ tourism figures fall in July

INTERNATIONAL tourist figures fell by 7.9% in the Canary Islands in July, compared with the same month last year.

They add up to around one million visitors in total, while spending also decreased, by 2.5% to €1,489m, according to official data, released this week, from Frontur and Egatur. The average expenditure per tourist, however, stood at €1,444, which represents an increase of 5.8%, at a rate of €162 per day (+ 3.5%), while the average duration of trip was 8.9 days, which is a slight 2.1% increase. In the first seven months of 2019, the number of international tourists has fallen by 3.5% in the Canary Islands to a total of 7.6m visitors, although spending continues to rise. It has risen by 1.1%, to reach €9,742m so far this year.

800kg cocaine cargo was heading for the Canaries

The Canary Islands is the third-highest destination in Spain this year, behind Catalonia (with almost 11.3m visitors) and the Balearic Islands (with almost 7.9m, which is a 0.2% increase). By origin, the British market is the highest, accounting for 43.6% of the total, followed by the Germans, with 16.8%. In the first seven months of the year, the average expenditure per tourist stood at 1,276 euros, which was 4.8% more than in the same period of last year, at a rate of 148 euros per day, and the average stay reached 8.6 days, 1.8% more. In total, Spain has had more than 48m international tourists in the first seven months of the year, 1.9% more than in the same period of 2018, with a total expenditure of €52,360m. From January to July, there has been 10.4m tourists from the UK, 6.5m from Germany, and 6.1m from France.

SPANISH National Security and Customs were given a shock when they intercepted a small yacht in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Azores, and uncovered a huge cocaine cargo, close to 800kg.

The operation was carried out, jointly, by the National Police, the Guardia Civil and the Customs agency, with collaboration from other European Security Forces. Together, they arrested and charged six men, three of whom were held on board the yacht on Monday morning, and the other three on Tuesday.

The trio arrested on the yacht comprised Serbian, Mexican and Russian men. Chief Inspector Alberto Morales, from the Department of Drugs and Organised Crime, (UDYCO9), said the other three were Serbian, all detained in their own country. The final drug count totalled 797kg of pure cocaine, chartered by the Serbian mafia, who, until then, had no known illegal activities regarding drug-trafficking in Spain. What is known now, however, is that the drugs were destined for Europe, and that the Canaries were the first stop. The sailboat Seascape, which was under an American flag, had been approached by the Spanish Customs’ boat Petral over a week earlier in international waters,

before being intercepted. It was then taken to the Spanish Navy base in Las Palmas to be inspected thoroughly. The substances were found in the smallest, most difficult, places on the sailing boat. This was an enormous find, which will surely affect the international drug-trafficking world immensely. The interception was made possible by information received at the beginning of August, regarding the possibility of a huge consignment of drugs on route in the Atlantic, with Spain being its first port of call. Specialised officers from Serbia, the UK and Portugal, as well as US authorities, all collaborated, which enabled the interception of the drug-filled sailing boat in international waters.

Sex-offender caught, some 30 years later! A SEX offender, formerly of Sunderland, who left an underage victim traumatised, has been jailed… almost 30 years after committing the crimes! David Wood’s victim, who suffers from PTSD, said his conviction by a jury “is part of the healing process”, after her years of struggling with the effects of his actions. The 62-year-old, who left Sunderland to live in Tenerife, denied indecent assault and two offences of indecency with a child, all in relation to the same under-age girl. But he was found guilty after a trial at Newcastle Crown Court, where he was jailed for six years and ordered to sign the sexoffenders’ register for life. Wood, who must abide by the terms of a sexual-harm

prevention order, was told by Judge Julie Clemitson: “She hated you for what you had done. Undoubtedly, your behaviour towards her had a profound and long-lasting impact upon her life.” She said of Wood, who had no convictions before or after the offences, and had handed character references to the court: “He longer presents a substantial risk towards children.” Sue Hirst, defending, said Wood gave up his life in Tenerife after the charges were brought against him. Miss Hirst added: “Character references speak of other aspects of Mr Wood, him having been a loyal friend to people, and being a hard worker. “As a result of the convictions,

he and his partner, whom he has been with for 3½ years, have had to abandon their life in Tenerife, having lived there for some time. “Mr Wood had remained in this country and his partner has returned from the property in Tenerife, having to face rebuilding her life in this country, in order to continue supporting him.”

Driver rolls into trouble

A MAN aged 26 suffered injuries to his head and body after being involved in a car accident on Tenerife’s TF-1 last Sunday. The emergency services were told that a vehicle had rolled over several times, near the Guimar tunnel. The call came in just before 5.30pm, and an ambulance was sent to the scene, where medics were able to treat the driver. As well as cuts and bruises to his body, it was evident that he had also suffered head injuries. The driver was stabilised before being taken to Candelaria Hospital, for further treatment and observation.

Ambulance crash hurts child

A vehicle, carrying three children, crashed into a parked ambulance in Morgan, Gran Canaria, last Sunday afternoon. It was later confirmed that the accident was caused by the vehicle’s brake failure. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, although one of the youngsters, travelling in the back of the Ford Tourneo, suffered minor injuries. The child was looked after by an ambulance crew member, before being taken to a nearby medical centre for further treatment.

Washed-up body riddle

A MAN’S body has washed up on Arico’s Tajao beach, and Guardia Civil officers have taken charge of the investigation to clarify the circumstances. It was spotted at 8.30am last Monday, and the only details released by official sources were that the person, aged 4045, appeared to have drowned, because there were no signs of a violent death.

‘Dilapidated’ resort was like a run-down car-park

A BEWILDERED British family, looking forward to an “idyllic holiday in an upmarket resort”, have spoken of their horror, as it descended into a nightmare.

The Hagger family had hoped to enjoy themselves in Tenerife, but they were left furious after arriving at the Costa del Silencio hotel, which was totally different from the adverts. Jane and husband John, from Brentwood, Essex, claimed there was a host of problems at the three-star Alborada Ocean Club, where they discovered a dilapidated resort, literally falling apart. Their pictures show crumbling

walls, broken tiling and rusty fences around the complex, black slime in the seawater pool and cockroach droppings in their room. Yet they had spent £2,550 for a seven-day, all-inclusive break with their children, aged 15 and 12, after booking with British travel company Teletext Holidays. Receptionist Jane, 46, said the hotel was like a “rundown car-park”, adding: “The building was falling apart. There was rubble falling on the outside, with bees’ nests and wasps’ nests, and there were cockroach nests in the cupboards.” After days of complaining, they were offered a transfer, for £400 each. Another holiday-maker there, Carie Henry, 45, from Eltham South-East London, who

spent more than £4,000 on a family holiday, said it felt like a “prison block”. Teacher Sharon Simpson, 54, from Peckham, South London, who stayed with her daughter and niece, is also trying to get a refund. But Teletext said: “Teletext Holidays prides itself on its high level of customer satisfaction. Each customer has been contacted, personally, and their complaints are being thoroughly investigated.” A statement from the hotel read: “We believe the points made by these guests are somewhat exaggerated and misleading. The complaints raised were dealt with to their satisfaction. However, we have since been contacted by our agent and we are further investigating.”

Compulsive crook, who defaced his stolen goods THE National Police have arrested a 40-year-old man, accused of no fewer than 22 crimes, to add to his extensive police record.

His latest crimes are believed to be 10 robberies with force, and the remaining 12 thefts, committed specifically, in the Barranco Grande area of Santa Cruz, and La Gallega, a municipality in the province of Burgos, Castile and Leon. The suspect is believed to have stolen various items, including water meters, infrastructure of irrigation systems and vehicle batteries, to sell them at a local scrapyard. He actually defaced them, in an attempt to eliminate where they came from. Investigations began last

May, after several reports were made from citizens and companies, reporting their stolen goods, all from Barranco Grande and La Gallega. At the beginning of the investigation, officers suspected it was down to vandalism, but a further probe suggested there were too many coincidences, causing them to think again.

The National Police clarified that a total of 22 crimes against the state had been committed, causing financial damages to residents and companies in the area. Finally, an arrest was made, indicting the 40-year-old local man, from Santa Cruz. A full police report was presented to judicial authorities detailing the investigations, along with the culprit.

Airlines prepared to cover those lost Ryanair flights

Turkish crew save pregnant woman, and other migrants

A TURKISH ship, bound for Morocco, picked up 24 African migrants last Sunday, 60 nautical miles off the Gran Canaria coast.

THE Canarian Government has already opened negotiations with other airlines, to cover the routes Ryanair will cease to operate, from 8th January 2020. The news was confirmed last Tuesday, when José Gregorio Martín Plata said that companies such as Jet2 had already committed to increase flight capacity with Belfast, along with Wizz Air, which has announced a

new connection to Warsaw, Poland. Plata said the changes had been made discreetly, to continue safeguarding the main objective, which was to retain connectivity and competitiveness with other holiday destinations. Canary Island President Pedro Martín, who stresses that teamwork is paying off, defended the work of various councils, reassuring them that the Ryanair situation should not, and does not, affect tourists or residents of the islands. Martín did, however, state

his concern about the worry over job losses, generated by the departure of the Irish airline, based across the archipelago. He is hopeful that the efforts made by all involved will bear fruit, enabling “these people to continue working on the island where they live”. In any case, he clarified that Ryanair “will not leave the archipelago indefinitely, adding: “We remain hopeful that the company will reconsider its decision, since many of the routes are very economically-beneficial for many.”

The crew spotted their boat and changed its course towards the small vessel. Three children and a pregnant woman were among those saved by the Ekmen Trans sailors.

The pregnant woman was taken to hospital by helicopter, while the rest of the migrants disembarked at Las Palmas port. Many migrants see the Canary Islands, off the Moroccan coast, as the only viable option remaining to them, because the European Union spends millions of dollars cutting off land routes through northern Africa. The EU officials consider them a launchpad for asylum in mainland Europe.

Aerial commentators spot rooftop cannabis A CANNABIS plantation was discovered by helicopter on a rooftop in Igualada, Catalonia, during Spain’s famed “La Vuelta” road-race cycling event. The helicopter, used for aerial coverage of “La Vuelta” by commentators, not only covered the race during the completion of last Saturday’s stage eight, but also uncovered the cannabis

plantation. The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s autonomous police force, were contacted. Officers later found the house and confiscated the prohibited rooftop substances, amounting to 40 plants. According to Article 368 in “Illicit trafficking of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances”: Drug-trafficking fines can range from imprisonment of 3-6 years, and a fine for triple the value of the drug found.

Man’s porn audition tragedy

A YOUNG man was found dead at the bottom of a pool after auditioning for a porn film in Andalucia. BATHERS were shocked when a group of baby sharks descended on the El Médano beach, in the south of Tenerife. Many bathers assumed they were normal fish, but when they found out their species, many frightened people left the beach. In fact, the fish in question

were dogfish, a small species of shark, common in the Canary Islands, and a species which has been sighted there for hundreds of years. What is unusual about the sighting is that the group of fish didn’t seem fazed by the presence of bathers. They are, usually, a shy,

timid fish, yet this latest sighting showed the fish swimming extremely close to swimmers, even interacting with them. And marine experts have reassured holiday-makers that although these small sharks do have teeth, they are harmless and pose no threat to humans.

The 20-year-old drowned in the private pool of a large home in Mairena del Aljarafe, in Sevilla. According to news agency Efe, the waiter, who worked in Sevilla city centre, had no signs of violence on his body. Investigators believe the man may have suffered a heart attack, or had a cardiac issue before drowning.

Witnesses said he had asked to go for a swim after shooting his audition, while awaiting a pal to collect him. However, the owners, who noticed there was no movement in the water, rushed to the pool, only to see that his body had sunk to the bottom. They pulled him out, and, immediately, dialled 112, but he was no longer breathing. The tragic incident happened at around 7.10pm on Sunday. Experts are determining the exact cause of death at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Sevilla.

A FRAUDULENT villa rentals website, involving Tenerife, which tricked British holiday-makers out of thousands of pounds, has finally closed down, following an extensive campaign by an online newspaper. Dreamvillasspain.com left countless tales of heartache, by persuading tourists to pay for villa that never existed. The first case was reported by online paper Olive Press in April, when professional chocolate-taster Angus Kennedy turned up at a Mallorca villa for which he had paid. He was met by a bewildered German owner, Klaus, who had no knowledge of offering his house for rentals. It soon dawned on Angus that he’d lost his €5,500, and, promptly, needed a place to stay with his wife and five young children. “I think many more have been duped, and the scam could be worth millions,” said Angus, at the time. Soon after, Olive Press was fielding calls concerning bogus rentals from Tenerife, Marbella and a small Alicante fishing village called Moraira, on the Costa Blanca. One of the most heartbreaking tales came from Petra Deleslie, 42, and the collapse of her €6,000

Fraudulent villa rentals website has closed down month-long, Costa Blanca villa rental, booked for next month. The Kent mother-of-two was preparing to travel, with 18 extended-family members, for a “much-needed break” following her mother’s death from lung cancer.

“My nephews and nieces were really looking forward to it as they had never been abroad,” said Deleslie. “I spent two years saving up for this trip, and I just can’t afford to pay for a new villa. The kids are devastated.” She added that the

Angus Kennedy and his family were scammed out of €5,500

cumulative loss of flights, in all, would cost her family €12,000. Another victim, Sarah Adams, booked a surprise getaway to Malaga for four friends and their total of five daughters, as a post-ALevels present.

Both Deleslie and Adams felt their stomachs lurch as they read of the scam tactics employed by dreamvillasspain.com. Prospective renters would receive an email from “general manager” Rosella Alba Gutierrez, offering discounts for up-front payments on respective villas. But, once paid, Gutierrez would shut off all contact, because the company’s phone was a fake. With mounting cases, Olive Press made a collective denuncia at the Guardia Civil in Moraira, on behalf of UK-based victims. For months nothing was heard, until a major UK news network revealed that the website had been shut down. A second site, named and shamed in a separate article, also closed.

Boat from Wales was packed full of drugs A SAIL boat in Wales, transporting close on 1,000kg of cocaine, has been intercepted by the National Police, along with British authorities. Intensive investigations have been carried out since last December, when Spanish police received information from the British National Crime Agency. Authorities tracked down the vessel and discovered that the ship was picked up in Mallorca, then left the Balearic island for a couple

of stop-overs, firstly in Huelva and then here in Tenerife. While the boat was in Mallorca, the authorities were able to link members of a British drug organisation to the vessel, named Atrevido. Officers tracked the boat leaving the Huelva port of Ayamonte a few months later, after the authorities had identified three other members of the gang. They travelled from the UK by caravan, and have now been arrested.

When the boat arrived in Tenerife, officers verified that its licence plate had been removed. Days later, it headed towards Suriname, a small country in South

America, and then on to Wales. Upon arrival at the Welsh coast, the small ship was approached by authorities, who seized the vessel, and, during their

search, discovered 950kg of cocaine hidden on board. Two crew members were arrested, along with four passengers. The British police informed Spanish authorities that two gang members were planning to head for Mallorca, where they would acquire a small sailing ship to transport cocaine from South America to Spain. Six people, arrested in Wales, were alleged to be involved with the British drugtrafficking organisation.

DRUNKEN British louts, on an easyJet flight, hurled drinks at families and threatened passengers, forcing the plane to be diverted.

Two foul-mouthed thugs swore at parents and kids as they terrified passengers in mid-air, on the Luton to Tenerife flight last Saturday afternoon. A dad who confronted the yobs, believed to be in their 30s, when they abused his two young children. was moved to the front of the plane for his own safety, said one passenger. The jet was diverted to Faro, Portugal, so the men could be arrested. Police boarded the easyJet plane and dragged off the two yobs, said to have punched Portuguese officers on the tarmac as horrified passengers watched on. The men are believed to have downed a bottle of vodka before boarding the flight. Roberta Carlton, 73, and husband Michael Carlton, 75, were flying to Tenerife for a 12-day holiday when the trouble-makers sparked chaos at around 35,000 feet. Roberta said: “The police took the two guys off from the back of the plane. Someone said they had to drag them off.

‘Most-wanted’ Scot sent home to prison Bundles of cash, hidden by the gang, but discovered by police

ONE of Scotland’s most-wanted men has been jailed, after being caught in Tenerife, after intending to meet his wife at the South Airport.

Joseph Lindsay, 34 was returned to the UK to face justice, after being traced to Tenerife by police, just after Christmas last year. He has been jailed for 4½ years, after police staked out the airport and arrested him as he waited to greet his partner, on 27th December last year. Detectives had linked Lindsay to a gang, who were jailed for a total of 87 years after an investigation into violence, drugs and firearm offences. The gang member, from Blantyre, Lanarkshire, was caught after leaving DNA

traces on elastic bands, used to bundle up money. Det Supt Laura Thomson, of the Organised Crime and Counter Terrorism Unit, said: “Police Scotland will continue to disrupt anyone involved in this type of activity on a daily basis.” She added: “People involved in serious, organised crime can give the illusion of living a glamorous lifestyle. “But the reality is that they are living dangerously, constantly having to look over their shoulder, and causing misery to our communities. “Regardless of the role individuals have in organised crime groups, they are associated with people who do not care about the consequences of their actions. “Their crimes aren’t victimless, and they will carry out extreme violence.”

Peacocks not such a feast for predators! THE words “peacock” and “camouflage” are generally considered opposites. But researchers, based in Pennsylvania, now argue that the vivid colours of the flightless bird conceal it from predatory mammals. To the human eye, the tail feathers of the male peacock stand out like the proverbial sore thumb. However, the retina of the human eye possesses three types of colour receptors, which can detect those colours, enabling humans to distinguish the bird from its duller surroundings. Peacocks and other birds have four types of receptors, which means they are tetrachromatic. On the other hand, the eyes of big cats and other natural predators of the peacock contain just two types of visual receptors, making them dichromatic, which is a form of colour blindness.

“Feathers, perceived by humans to be vividly colourful, are often presumed to be equally conspicuous to other mammals, thus presenting an enhanced predation risk,” said Haverford University researcher Suzanne Amador Kane, lead author of the study. “However, many mammals that prey on adult birds have dichromatic visual systems with just two types of coloursensitive visual receptors (one sensitive to ultraviolet light), rather than the three characteristics of humans and four of most birds.”

The significant differences between the colour receptors in human and peacock eyes, and those in the eyes of predatory animals, led Suzanne and her colleagues to suggest that the tail feathers of a male peacock announce its presence to females of its kind, without revealing its position to predators. They decided to put their theory to the test and determine if predators were able to detect peacock tails. The Haverford researchers leveraged multi-spectral imaging and reflectance

spectroscopy to simulate the eyes of humans, peacocks, and predatory animals, such as tigers and feral dogs. They evaluated the brightness, colour and texture of peacock feathers against a green background that represented the natural environment of the animal and its predators. A scientific paper, published in research journal PLoS ONE, reported that birds could spot the peacock’s tail with ease. In contrast, the predators could barely see the feathers. In fact, peacock’s tail feathers are not just coloured vibrantly. Their harmonic frequency is lower than the lowest string on a bass guitar, and the sound they make is barely within the lower limit of human hearing. Furthermore, paying close attention to the feathers when they are moving will reveal that individual sections stay still. Meanwhile, the parts between these “nodes” vibrate at higher speeds, making for an interesting, visual contrast.

400 migrants rescued from sea in one week

MARITIME rescue service Salvamento Marítimo has picked up 183 people, attempting to make the dangerous crossing from North Africa to Spain. This brought the total number of migrants rescued in the Western Mediterranean to nearly 400, in the last week alone. And, according to the Spanish rescue service, a further 73 migrants, including 10 children, had been rescued from three boats in the Straits of Gibraltar. Meanwhile another 110 people have been taken to Malaga after being rescued in the Alboran Sea. And similar operations last week saw coastguards rescue 208 migrants in just 24 hours. These followed the news that more than 150 African migrants made it to Spain, after climbing over two huge fences, into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

Cowardly punch leaves Scottish tourist in coma

www.canarianweekly.com 6th - 12th September 2019

Pregnant women must be assessed for listeria THE Spanish Government insists that all pregnant women in Malaga must be assessed, following the area’s first miscarriage through the listeriosis bacterial infection.

A SCOTSMAN, left in a coma after a singlepunch from behind by an unknown man in Ibiza, is fighting for his life. Gavin Robertson suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on the brain, after the unprovoked attack in Ibiza. The 26-year-old from Ayrshire remains in an induced coma at the Balearic island’s Policlinica del Rosaria hospital, with his mother, Kirsty McMaster, 45, and 37-yearold aunt Paula Marshall at his bedside. His anxious mum said: “Gavin’s in a stable condition, in an induced coma, and doctors say it will be at least five days before they try to take him off it, so this week is critical. “The pressure on his brain keeps going up and down, and we just don’t know what the lasting damage could be.” Gavin, an electrician, had been standing at an ATM with friends when a stranger ran up behind him and punched him on the side of the head. He now faces a gruelling recovery, which could last months. Kirsty added: “One punch is all it took. He hit his head on the ground and fractured his skull, and it’s going to be a long road ahead for him, and for all of us.”

A woman, 22 weeks pregnant, lost her baby at the Hospital Costa del Sol on Wednesday, amid the spread of listeria in contaminated meat products. It was the sixth miscarriage caused by Spain’s biggestever listeriosis outbreak, which has so far killed three people. Four miscarriages were in public hospitals in Sevilla, with another in a private Madrid medical centre. The warning comes as a child, with “very evolved cancer”, became the latest

recorded case on Tuesday, taking Andalucia’s infected listeria total to 205, and the number to 213 nationally. The number of hospitalised patients has also increased, to 46, while the total of pregnant victims dropped on Wednesday to 14. Meanwhile, the Junta has advised ALL pregnant women to be checked by their GP or gynaecologist, according to

Malaga newspaper Diario Sur. Officials had previously said that only pregnant women with symptoms needed to get medical advice. But this new demand, issued to all doctors, recommends that even “asymptomatic” women, showing no symptoms, who have eaten the contaminated meat, should be checked. Doctors will have contacted

pregnant women in their care throughout this week, to decide whether they need to be prescribed the antibiotic amoxicillin. In this new protocol, backed up by eight separate scientific groups, recommendations will be based on risk. Pregnant women will be asked if they have eaten the infected La Mecha brand of the popular “carne mechada” Spanish food. If patients are unable to remember, or aren’t sure, they will be given the drug, which has reduced the symptoms for 61% of victims successfully, in under a fortnight. A British man returning to the UK after a holiday in Spain was among the other suspected victims, while a six-strong German family, in their own country, were also added to the list of those infected.

Spain’s first female Winter Olympic medallist is dead

Winter Olympics, capturing bronze in France’s 1992 Albertville games. Blanca was well loved in Spain, and her late brother had won Olympic

skiing gold 20 years before her success. When her career finished, Blanca took part in reality TV productions, such as Celebrity Island and a

trampoline-jumping show. “It is a very sad day for Spanish sport,” said María José Rienda, Spain’s Secretary of State for Sports. And acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez passed on his solidarity and love for her family. Blanca told her daughter, Olivia, that she was going on a walking trip to northern Spain. But suspicions were aroused when Olivia, who plays rugby for the Spanish national team, discovered that her mother had left her mobile phone behind. Yet eight days elapsed between Blanca going missing and her family reporting the matter.

Parents must sign for kids under-18 heading abroad UNDER-18s, living in Spain but planning to travel abroad without their parents, will their need written permission, which must be presented at the airport, even if they are accompanied by another adult. The new law, which came into force across Spain last Sunday (1st September), even affects youngsters aged 16 and 17, who are going on holiday alone, or with a group of friends, as well as children travelling with grandparents, aunts or uncles. As is always the case at any age when travelling abroad, even within the Schengen zone, children leaving the country without their parents need to have their documentation in order: DNI, or national ID card for Spanish citizens, or passport, but passport only for nationals of countries which do not issue ID cards. The travel authority document must be acquired in person by one or more

parents, or legal guardians, from the National Police or Guardia Civil station, town hall, court or notary. Although only one parent is required to attend, he or she must have legal authority over the underage traveller, either custody of, or an access arrangement, unless both are present, and the other needs to give his or her permission. It is not known how far this may cause difficulties for mothers who do not have contact with the father, where the father is a donor through a private arrangement, or for fathers, where the mother is a surrogate and not an active parent. Some confusion is expected around foreign children living in Spain, given that initial details of the requirements state their parents need to

seek their travel permit from their Consular authority, rather than from the police, courts, notary or town hall. Neither is it clear whether there will be a cost involved, and if so, how much? The new law could also affect under-18s travelling to Spain from elsewhere, either on their own, with groups of their peers, or with other adults, even relatives. Airport governing body AENA, airlines, the Guardia Civil, interior ministry and other public bodies involved in any way in foreign travel and children’s affairs will be releasing further information on social media in the next few days. Non-Spaniards living in Spain should seek further information from their Consulate or foreign office, via phone or email, or online.

Major international plan nets worldwide criminals

MASTER criminals from across the world, including a British man, have been arrested in a huge international operation.

Joint investigations between Interpol, Spain’s National Police and other forces, enabled officers to detain the Briton. The 43-year-old, a suspected serial warehouse robber, was apprehended by Customs at Alicante Airport as he tried to enter Spain. Officers arrested the fugitive after noting his European Detention

and Extradition Order. A Lithuanian man, wanted for “crimes against the person”, was also held as he tried to leave, via the same airport. An alleged drug-smuggler from Peru was arrested in Alicante itself, and could face 25 years in prison. Also, in Elche, another joint operation resulted in an Algerian fraudster being arrested, after being on the run from French authorities since 2017. All four arrests came in a 10-day period, during a crackdown on international crime.

Deputy Head of Mission urges UK nationals in the Canary Islands to get ready for Brexit

Tim Hemmings, Deputy Head of Mission to Spain, is visiting the Canary Islands from 10th to 12th September.

A key focus of the visit will be two events to talk to UK Nationals about Brexit, in particular to ensure that they have done what they need to be ready for when the UK leaves the EU. Tim Hemmings said: “As we approach 31 October,

we want to provide as much clarity as we can for the 300,000-plus UK nationals living in Spain, including the many thousands who have made their home in the Canary Islands. There are a number of key steps British citizens need to take now if they haven’t already: register for residency, check your access to healthcare, check your passport validity and exchange UK driving licences for a Spanish one. “If you aren’t able to come

to one of the events in Tenerife or Gran Canaria, do stay up to date with the latest news by signing up for email alerts to the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk, and following Brits in Spain on Facebook.” During his visit, Mr Hemmings will also be talking to representatives of the local authorities and visiting the 112 Centre, which recently did an extraordinary job battling in extreme conditions to fight the forest fires in Gran Canaria.

UK Governmen help UK nation UK nationals who may struggle to complete their residency applications will be helped by measures announced by the UK Government.

Up to £3 million is being provided for organisations who will inform UK nationals who live in EU member states including Spain, about the need to register as resident and support them as they complete their applications. The Government wants to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork – focusing in particular on pensioners or disabled people, those living in remote areas or with mobility difficulties, and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation. British Consul Charmaine Arbouin said: “The UK will be leaving the EU on 31 October and we want to help UK nationals living in Spain to be fully ready for Brexit, whatever the circumstances. This funding will ensure people get the support they need to protect their residency rights and access to services.” Organisations working with people who might

be affected, and who might require additional support, can apply for project funding from the Foreign & Commonwealth Office from 19 September at gov.uk/fco. The fund’s programme team, based in London, will be running a series of webinars to provide bidders with a fuller understanding of the fund, and an opportunity to ask questions on the bidding process. Interested organisations can find further detail at https:// www.gov.uk/government/ news/3-million-grant-tohelp-uk-nationals-in-eu-forbrexit. Organisations can also contact their nearest consulate for an initial conversation. Individuals wanting to access support with their residency applications will be able to contact those organisations who are successful in their bid, once the funding has been awarded. We will provide details of the providers for Spain in due course. Meanwhile, UK nationals living in Spain should continue to prioritise registering as a resident by 31 October. THESE are challenging times for investors, especially those looking for growth, through low-risk investments. Bank interest rates around much of the world remain extremely low. The UK rate has been stuck at 0.75% for a year. You would now have to go back over ten years to find the last time it went over 1%. In the US, the Federal Reserve cut its interest rate for the first time in over a decade. Elsewhere, such as in Japan and the eurozone, there are even negative rates. What does this mean for savers? While many bank deposits have been earning next to nothing for years, inflation has continued to creep upwards,

EUROZONE interest, which has hit a new low, is expected to break all records in Spain at the close of last month, having dropped to -0.354%.

Although the official monthend figure will not be announced by the Bank of Spain until after this weekend, the plunge in the interest rate for the countries using the common currency is significant, having ended July on -0.283%. The lowest Euribor rate in 20 years was recorded a fortnight ago, on 21st August, at -0.399%, although it has risen by half a percentage point since then. But the final full month of summer 2019 will almost certainly see it break the -0.3% barrier for the first time ever. For most of the last 3½ years, after the Euribor fell into negative figures for the first time in February 2016, homeowners and home-buyers were warned consistently by economists not to rely too much on their “mortgage honeymoon” continuing, with forecasts of an interestrate rise always just around the corner. But it has never gone back up to 0% in all this time, and plans by the European Central Bank (BCE) to increase it have been shelved, constantly. The Euribor has been in freefall for many years, in an attempt to stimulate growth in the Eurozone by

Time to take interest in your investment options

averaging 2.3% in the UK since 2010. Prolonged, low interest rates mean funds in UK savings, ISA or deposit accounts are failing to keep up with the cost of living. Last year, the average 0.23%, offered by UK easy-access savings accounts, meant the average saver lost around £500, in real terms. But it could be worse. Two Swiss banks have announced they will pass negative interest rates on to customers with deposits over €500,000/1 million; a Danish bank has, since, followed suit. With worldwide interest rates expected to remain low for some time, achieving better returns than bank deposits means widening your investment horizons, to consider “riskier” assets. However, it is crucial to factor in diversification, and your personal appetite for risk. Reducing investment risk Many people worry about the risks of investing money for capital growth, but overlook

that there are also risks with leaving money in the bank. Even the biggest financial institutions can fail. And we have already looked at how cash deposits can be eaten away by inflation, over the longer term. While market dips can be unsettling, you can reduce risk by being invested for the medium to long-term, in a well-diversified portfolio. The key is to spread investments across different regions, asset types and sectors, to limit exposure in any one area, using a strategy matched to your particular situation, goals, timeline and risk appetite. You could also consider spreading the timing of your investments, by investing capital in tranches. This “pound (or euro/dollar) cost averaging” approach can help smooth out volatility, and potentially improve overall returns, over longer time periods.

Currency and tax considerations If you have UK investments but are living abroad, you also need to factor in currencyexchange costs. Once your key expenses are in euros, it can prove much more expensive to take income in pounds, especially amidst Brexit uncertainty. To minimise conversion fees and exchange-rate risk, explore investment options that enable currency diversification and flexibility. Some multi-currency arrangements allow you, for example, to invest in sterling now, and switch to euros at a later date, if you wish. You could also select the currency of withdrawals. Do not underestimate the impact of taxation, too. Explore locally-compliant arrangements that can shelter capital from tax, while providing a tax-efficient income in Spain.

Establishing your approach As always, when considering your investment options, you need a long-term, diversified strategy, based around your personal circumstances, objectives, risk profile and time horizon. For the best results, take personalised, professional advice. With the right balance of risk and return for your peace of mind, you will be best placed to ride out this long low of interest rates, as well as currency or market turbulence, in these uncertain times. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Spanish mortgages use the Euribor to set their interest rates, which are typically between 1% and 3% above the Eurozone figure. Unlike other EU member States, such as the UK, where interest increases or falls are reflected immediately in variable-rate mortgages, home loans in Spain are updated annually.

This means payments remain the same for a full 12 months, even on a variable rate, so if forecasts predict an increase, home-owners have plenty of time to plan, and consider swapping to a fixed rate, to prevent uncertainty. With the Euribor being so low and continuing to drop, fixed-rate mortgages in Spain are in a minority. In light of the latest Euribor fall, a typical mortgage in Spain, of, say, €100,000 over a 25-year term, would, if set for review at the end of last month, become €98 a year cheaper, or €8.21 a month. The lowest interest rate at present, seen on a Spanish mortgage is 0.17% above the Euribor, and many of those signed up in the prerecession years, between 2005 and 2007, have rates below 0.4%, meaning the Eurozone rate would have to plummet even further before home-owners would, in theory, actually be paid by the bank for having a mortgage. But this scenario is unlikely, as it is probable that the banks would simply stop charging interest in these cases. For those contracted during or after the recession, the “Euribor + X%” figure has, generally, been higher to prevent this from occurring. Even if the Eurozone interest rate does rise, increases have always been very gradual, and the late 2007 historic high of 5.6% was an exception, which does not look likely to be witnessed again.

Euribor’s historic low rate boosts mortgages and breaks all records

reducing prices, making credit cheaper, and homebuying more affordable, and to help households recover financially, and enable them to spend more. Latest forecasts again show that the BCE does not intend to increase rates until at least 2020, and, if it does so, this will be the first rise since 2011. Even this, though, appears

less probable, with the Eurozone’s economy having contracted in the past few months, including in Germany, its most financiallybuoyant nation, whose GDP shrunk by 0.1% in the second quarter of 2019, thanks to trade wars fuelled by Donald Trump’s US, and by the continuing threat of an imminent no-deal Brexit.

After meeting the family, Paul says: “It’s remarkable what they’re doing, because they’re not doing it for themselves, they’re doing it for future generations, because they’re not benefitting from this. They come up with rival designs to try to tempt Elizabeth to pick their view for the perfect lush city garden. Rise of the Nazis

Canny Cops

A powerful three-part forensic examination of how Germany turned from a liberal democracy into a brutal murderous dictatorship in just four years. In 1930 Germany was a liberal democracy, but just four years later the country is ruled by a dictator and its government is in the hands of murderers. Rise Of The Nazis is a powerful three-part forensic examination of what happened in those four short years. The series reveals that the Nazification of Germany was as much about ruthless personal ambition and a desire to hold onto power by more moderate politicians as it was about extreme ideology. In the second episode of the series it is 1933 and Hitler is the Chancellor of Germany, but his position isn’t secure. He is part of a shaky coalition in a democratic government. Now, Hitler moves to the next stage of his plan to become absolute leader - destroying democracy from within. Hitler tasks the Nazi leadership with tightening their grip on power. He does this by destroying the political opposition and bringing all German states under Nazi control. But in executing Hitler’s plan bitter rivalries emerge among the Nazi elite. Hermann Göring and Heinrich Himmler start vying for their own personal power and Hitler’s favour. As these men attempt to outwit and outdo one another, their rivalry gives rise to the main organs of a new Nazi state - The Gestapo, the Death Camps and The SS. As Hitler sets about dismantling democracy, a brave deputy prosecutor called Josef Hartinger reveals the truth of Nazi oppression and the first acts of the Holocaust.

Interior Design Master The stakes are raised this week, as the five remaining designers undertake their biggest project so far. Michelle puts them into a team of two and a team of three, and tells them they have an entire holiday lodge to design: they’ll take one bedroom each and collaborate with their team on a kitchen/diner and outdoor space. As the task gets under way two of the designers pull plans together and work hard for the good of the team. But can one member of the team (who is notorious for her design ambitions) rein in her ideas - or will her ambition get the better of her and leave the lodge unfinished for the judges? Helping Michelle this week is guest Judge Abigail Ahern. Abigail is an influential tastemaker always ahead of the design trail, whether pioneering faux flowers or dark, inky colour palettes. With trendsetting eclectic designs, and a portfolio that spans lavish residential properties to the Ritz Carlton Palm Beach hotel, she knows more than most what makes winning interior design. Judging the studios, Michelle and Abigail are impressed with the bold design choices by some contestants, but disappointed to see that not every space lives up to their expectations. Challenge over, the teams return to Michelle’s design studio to hear the verdict from Fearne.

ergeant Terry continues to set his sights set on a well-known local resident in the numbered streets in Horden - 26 year-old Shauna.  When the police hear that there are drugs at her notorious party house, Terry wants to give her one final warning to go on the straight and narrow. Elsewhere on the coast, a pub is shut down after a brutal bar brawl leaves a man seriously injured. In neighbouring Dawdon a man is suspected of stabbing a local resident, but finding out where he’s hiding is no easy task when there are historic trust issues between the community and the police.

Hairy Bikers Route 66 In this brand new six-part series The Hairy Bikers fulfil a long-held ambition: to take on the world’s most iconic road trip, America’s Route 66, which spans over 2,000 miles of tarmac from Chicago to California. The first helping of this epic adventure runs from Chicago to St Louis and provides a wholesome bite into the story of America, a country built on migration. Chicago historically drew migrant workers into its supersize meatpacking industry, and with them came a line-up of dishes as diverse as the city’s population. The Bikers discover hickory-smoked BBQ meat and a rather soggy Italian beef sub roll, which see The Bikers adopt a very particular ‘stance’ to avoid wet boots. In small town America the Bikers enjoy some retro roadside spectacles that provide entertainment and intrigue, including the huge fibreglass figures known as ’muffler men’. Dave and Si enjoy a championship-winning apple pie and learn how Route 66 entered American folklore by connecting small town America from East to West and enabling it to prosper. The pair are privileged to receive an invitation from the Amish community, where they cook together and learn more about this very different way of life. Crossing the Mississippi into Missouri, Dave and Si visit the city of St Louis. Fuel comes in the form of Route 66 institution, Ted Drewes’‘concrete custard’ - a treat so rich and thick it’s served upside down. The Bikers encounter a story of modern migration with the city’s Bosnian community, as they sample their wonderful food.

Billy Connolly’s Great American Trail

This week opens in Kearny, a place known as Little Glasgow where Billy discovers it was the Scots who brought football to America. Then it’s a pilgrimage to the Martin Guitar Company the factory that have built the guitars for some of the biggest rockstars on the planet, including Billy’s hero Hank Williams. From there it’s on to the tiny town of Stockbridge, home to America’s greatest artist, Norman Rockwell and the muse whose bottom appeared on thousands of copies of the Saturday Evening Post. Don’t say Billy doesn’t take you anywhere nice, next up it’s the Eastern State Penitentiary that was once America’s most notorious prison and the one time residence of legendary gangster Al Capone. From there Billy heads to the boardwalk of Atlantic City, the city that was Vegas before Vegas was famous. Followed by Billy tinkling the irons of the world’s largest musical instrument that just happens to be underneath a car park. It’s the 50th anniversary of Woodstock this year and there’s never been a better time to meet some veterans of peace, love and understanding at the site of the greatest rock concert on earth. Billy ends the episode with a clog dance at Floyd County Store in the Appalachian mountain range.

Ale-Hop cow thief foiled by security

6th - 12th September 2019

Drunken driver and wife had child, 3, in the front

THE answer to the burning question, “has anyone ever tried to steal an AleHop cow?” is now, officially, “Yes”! A man was arrested in a Palma de Mallorca shopping centre after being chased by security while dragging along the life-sized, wheeled bovine statue, in the early hours. Lots of the Mediterranean gift-shop-chain customers have either bragged about how, “one day”, they will make off with the trademark black-and-white cow in the doorway of every branch. But, by their own admission, they would never actually do so, or said they would buy it if they won the Lottery. In fact, the farm animal statues are worth €3,000, so a smallish El Gordo win this Christmas would be enough, if the cows were actually up for sale! The man who attempted to pinch it, from outside the Playa de Palma store, had been working on his rustling mission for two

days before the attempt. And CCTV footage later showed that he had been loosening the security fastenings gradually, to make it easier for him to run off with his quarry. He then returned to the shop in the early hours of a Monday morning, unleashed it and tried to sneak off. In reality, it would have been difficult enough for him to avoid arousing attention, when leading a stolen plastic cow as big as the real animal down the street. But he had not bargained for security guards being on the premises in the dead of night. After a pursuit on foot,

the thief, who found himself surrounded, released the cow and fled. He is said to be well-known to shop and hotel staff on Palma beach, and he is believed to have a long criminal record, with arrests for burglary, mugging, hold-ups, shoplifting, wilful damage, and threats. It gave the police an easy job of tracing the thief, and he was finally arrested earlier this week, about a fortnight after his thwarted livestock theft. Meanwhile, the cow was returned to her station, and chained up again, outside the store.

A DRUNKEN father, three times over the alcohol limit while driving with his wife and kids, has been arrested. Police stopped the 41-yearold Ecuadorian, with Spanish nationality, after spotting a car skidding out of a Marbella petrol station. Officers said the man reeked of booze and was “clearly

drunk”, when he stepped out of the vehicle in Avenida Severo Ochoa, as was his wife. They both failed a breathalyser test. Their youngest child had been travelling in between the two front seats without a seat belt. The driver was held for committing a crime against road safety, and the car had to be towed away because of the couple’s drunken state.

SPANISH Epidemic Society professionals have called for anyone born before 1970 to get a vaccination against measles, unless they know they have had both doses as a child, or have had the illness.

Chairman Pere Godoy says the Society is preparing a national campaign, aimed at anyone aged 50 or over. However, Spain’s Health Minister has asked for it to apply to anyone aged 40-50, who has not had measles, not been vaccinated at all, or not had both doses. Some confusion has since arisen, because the Health Ministry has now backtracked and said it should have announced that anyone born after, rather than before, 1970, meaning anyone under 50, should be immunised. In light of this, the safest option is for anyone of any age, who cannot be sure whether he or she has been inoculated, to book a jab at their nearest health centre. Although measles has been eradicated in Spain, cases reported elsewhere in Europe mean national health authorities want to ensure that everyone is immunised, should the virus enter the country. Nowadays, Spain automatically calls parents or guardians of infants to attend their local GP surgery and book the triple-virus jab, against measles, mumps and rubella, or the so-called “MMR vaccine”, the first at the age of one year and the second at three or four years old. For adults and older children, doses can be given at any time, as long as they are at least a month apart, and the Spanish Epidemic Society says that there are very few, if any, contra-indications. In fact, it is even safe to be vaccinated while pregnant. Although most northern European and Anglo-Saxon expats in Spain are likely to have been vaccinated, various scares, in the UK in the 1980s included, concerning childhood vaccines’ carrying a possible risk of brain damage, may have led parents to decide not to take a chance. It was

If you can’t remember having a measles jab, make sure you get one

a similar situation, which ended up with thousands of British children in this decade not being immunised against whooping cough. As a result, many British nationals, aged 40 or over, are likely to have had all three conditions as children already. A fortnight ago, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Spain a measlesfree country, which was a description its government has hailed as yet another success of its highly-lauded, National Health system. This year, up to and including the third week in July, a total of 233 cases of measles had been diagnosed. But medical authorities confirmed that these were “imported” from outside Spain’s borders, or patients infected from those with imported measles, and that they were “swiftly interrupted” to ensure nobody else caught it. But elsewhere in Europe, nearly 90,000 cases were diagnosed in the first six months of 2019, the total of which was more than the nearly 85,000 cases reported in the whole of 2018. It demonstrated that the

condition was on the rise again, given that around 26,000 patients were diagnosed with measles in 2017, and just 5,300 in 2016 across the whole of the continent. These reports are not just based on the European

Union’s 28 member States, but on all 53 countries which make up the continent of Europe. For the first time since records began in 2012, four countries, the UK, Albania, Greece and the Czech Republic, have seen measles reappear

after eradicating the illness altogether, while in that time, two others, Austria and Switzerland, have also managed to wipe it out altogether. Spain has now joined Austria and Switzerland in this respect, but health authorities want to protect the population from any infections that may come in from the UK, or from other countries which have not managed to get rid of the disease completely. Nowadays, given that it is so rare, a whole generation of adults may have no idea what measles is, or what its symptoms look like. The patient normally reports feeling achy, feverish and generally unwell, and presents a red rash that starts off minimal and spreads quickly. It is not normally lifethreatening in healthy children and young people, but complications can set in, and it can cause serious birth defects or miscarriage in pregnant women, and be much more severe in late adulthood.

Fake food-poison cheats scoffed at in UK courts

FAKE claims of food poisoning by Brit tourists on Spanish holidays have fallen dramatically, to “not a single case” this year. The false legal actions rocketed by 500% in the 2016 summer, when they were estimated to have cost the Spanish hotel industry over €50m. But following the convictions of British tourists last year, the practice has almost disappeared. “This year, the issue has relaxed

substantially,” a leading travel agency told Diario Informacion. In 2018, four members of a Liverpool family were each handed an €800 fine and three months in prison, for filing a false claim against Jet2Holidays. A second successful case saw a €15,000 fine imposed on two British tourists, who made a fake foodpoisoning claim against TUI while on holiday in Benidorm. In both cases, the Brits claimed suffering nausea, stomach pain, diarrhoea and vomiting for days, and even

falsified medical reports. But in the latter case, the publication of photos on social media, showing the perpetrators enjoying themselves, led to the retaliatory sentence. In one of the cases, the judge said: “I cannot accept the uploading of photographs as a happy couple, if the holidays were as they say.” Spanish hotel association Hosbec flagged up the claims to the British Government, initially, after tourists began claiming up to €50,000 for food poisoning.

Biker chief King Kong is arrested in bar by police Biker is arrested by police in San Pedro

Mafia chief’s mobile gives the game away

AFTER being convicted of drugtrafficking in his home country, an Italian mafia boss decided he would lose himself on the Costa del Sol. A BIKER gang leader, known as “King Kong”, has been captured by police on the Costa del Sol. Officers arrested the Dutchman at a San Pedro bar, on suspicion of ordering multiple murders in the Netherlands. The 36-year-old is believed to be a prominent member of the outlawed Caloh Wagoh motorcycle club, considered a criminal organisation by Dutch police. The fugitive had, reportedly, been living in a luxury Marbella house with his pregnant wife and three children for several months. A video of the arrest shows a man in a white polo top and wearing flip-flops, being tackled and pinned down by two officers. He is being held in prison, pending extradition back to the Netherlands.

The operation was coordinated by Spain’s Special Response Groups for Organised Crime, working closely in Malaga with Dutch authorities there. The Caloh Wagoh club is believed to have several hundred members, and, like other illegal biker gangs, uses the Costa del Sol as a place to lie low. This particular gang has been linked to a string of attacks, including one in June, when a rocket-launcher was fired at an Amsterdam office building.

But though Spanish police had been on his scent, they were unable to pin him down… until he made a rookie mistake! The mafioso, known only as PGF, was in the Fuengirola area when he decided to make a mobile phone call while driving last week. But he was unaware that plain-clothed Local Police officers had been following him, after noticing his resemblance to a particular mobster, on their wanted list. And when he took his phone out, while behind the wheel in Los Boliches, he gave the police a perfect excuse to pull him over. Their suspicions grew when they asked him to identify himself, and his documents showed a man with the initials SB, who was born in 1971. And the photo

hardly fitted his description! He was arrested, smartly, and, before long, transferred to the National Police, where forensics revealed that he was, actually, one of Italy’s most-wanted mob bosses. He was identified as PGF,

born in Italy in 1968, and he had been running from a European Order of Detention and Extradition (OEDE), issued by the Italian courts after he had failed to serve his sentence for drug-trafficking. Needless to say, he will be extradited.

Amigos de Gillian Banks

Gillian Banks flat out to make it happen for kids THE Amigos de Gillian Banks charity is working flat-out as it enters a busy three months, organising bag packs for children going back to school, as well as those needing uniforms, books and equipment.

Last year, the charity spent €5,000 on these items, to make sure the children were all kitted out and ready for lessons by September, and the same will happen, this year. The charity has also been busy organising the spectacular shows it puts on during October and November, with performers flying in from the UK, to raise money for the organisation. Last year, in partnership with Rotary Club Tenerife Sur, during a week in October, a total of €26,500 was raised between the two charities, the money all going towards helping the Tenerife children. This week, we have already been bag-packing at Iceland’s Overseas Supermarket, in Las Chafiras, as part of our Back to School campaign.

And don’t forget the Auditorium Infanta Leonor show in Los Cristianos, on 28th October at 7.30pm. Come along and enjoy our Chicago Experience show, with a live jazz band and singers, as well as flapper dancers and music through the 1920-30s, including some of the favourites: All that Jazz, Cell block Tango, and many more. In addition, we are putting on a fantastic 5-star buffet and show on Thursday, 31st October, at the Wine Bar and Terrace in Los Gigantes. Come along and spend Halloween with us. We promise you a spectacular, spooky evening, with a Grand Gala Dinner, in partnership with Rotary Club Tenerife Sur, on Saturday, 2nd November, to raise funds for both charities, as we did at last year’s fantastic event, staged at the Hard Rock Hotel. Please support our charity at our events and shows: 48 singers/performers and artistes are flying to Tenerife, especially to perform for you and the good cause we support. Cancer Bus

Charity is boxing clever to support Cancer Bus! THE Montecristo bar in Callao Salvaje has done it again, its second charity appeal of the year raising a fantastic sum of €2,930 for the Cancer Bus, courtesy of organisers Webby and Glenn.

They would like to thank barowners Dave and Gill, as well as their staff and also the

customers, who dug deep to make it a worthwhile day. Some of the amazing items on auction were a signed Anthony Joshua glove, by the former world heavyweight boxing champion, and a set of equestrian breeches from jockey G Wood, signed by many top jockeys. There were also raffle prizes, such as a week’s accommodation at the Paradise Club (CLC) in Adeje, and Fanabe’s Los Olivos beach resort; two tickets, including transport, to watch CD Tenerife; and various food vouchers for establishments such as the Perla Gris hotel, in Callao Salvage, and La Chayofa restaurant The Treehouse.

K9 Animal News

WHO is this handsome boy, you may ask? Say hello to Sprite. He’s a very sweet, handsome and loving boy, who is still looking for his forever home. He has been at K9 for a while. Before he arrived at K9, whatever it was that happened to Sprite has made him a little nervous of new people, so he does need some time to get to know you. Once he does, he is very content, either out walking, or playing in the kennels. When he is out he loves to explore, but will stop for the occasional treat! He can be walked off-lead, which gives him a chance to run around and burn off some energy. At the moment, Sprite is currently sharing with two female dogs, Sally and Olga, but, quite soon, they are both

being adopted by the same family, which means he will be left on his own. It is wonderful news for our two girls, but not so great for little Sprite, who won’t understand why he is suddenly on his own, again. Sprite was previously sharing with another female called Willow, who also got adopted by a lovely family. He is best with female dogs, as he does not mix well with other males. It would be wonderful for Sprite to finally get out of the kennels and live a happy life, with a new family. He is quite obedient, and will come when you call him. He loves his food and always looks forward to his meal time every day, sitting for you before you feed him. He likes to play, and grabs whichever toy he can, running around with it and having fun. He does like attention, and will jump up for a hug, and a nice rub under his face. Fiona, from K9 said: “I really enjoy spending time with

Sprite, inside and outside the kennels. He has learnt to trust me, which does make it easier, of course. The feeling it gives is priceless, and I know he can make someone else feel the same way. He really shows you when he trusts you, and it is a lovely experience. If you are interested in getting to know Sprite, I would recommend calling here a few times to walk him first, and let him get to know you. I promise you, once he does, you will fall in love!” We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife. com Online shop We now have an online shop: www.k9tenerife.eu/welcometo-our-k9-shop. Don’t get in the mood for sugar! SOME people mistakenly believe that consuming sugary snacks and beverages can give them a sugar rush, or increased energy and alertness. However, a UK study warns that sugar worsens your mood, and makes you feel more tired. Researchers investigated the myth of the “sugar rush”, and whether sugar consumption has a positive effect on mood. They found that sugar doesn’t improve a person’s mood, and it can make individuals less alert and more tired. Researchers used data from 31 published studies, involving at least 1300 adult participants. They studied the effect of sugar on various aspects of mood, such as alertness, anger, depression and fatigue. They also analysed how factors, such as the quantity and type of sugar consumed, might affect the

mood. Additionally, they studied whether engaging in demanding mental and physical activities changed the effects of sugar consumption. These findings debunk the idea of a “sugar rush.” The researchers hope that it can encourage people to minimise their sugar consumption, for

the sake of their well-being. The notion that sugar consumption can improve mood has been widely influential in popular culture. This has resulted in individuals around the world consuming sugary beverages to become more alert or prevent fatigue. Unfortunately, the study shows that these claims are unsubstantiated, and that sugar makes people feel worse. Tips to cut sugar from your diet It can be difficult to reduce your sugar intake if you love sweet snacks and beverages. But, if you want to improve your overall well-being, and maintain a healthy weight, follow these tips to cut down on sugar. *Avoid sugary breakfast foods like jams, pancakes and waffles. Instead, eat healthier alternatives like avocado, boiled eggs and oatmeal with fruit *Limit your intake of sugary drinks like soda and fruit juices. Opt for low-sugar beverages such as fruit-infused water, fruit or herbal teas, and black or flat-white coffee *Avoid sugary desserts like cakes, biscuits, doughnuts, ice cream and pies. Choose healthier alternatives like dark chocolate, a piece of fresh fruit, or plain Greek yogurt with cinnamon. *Avoid processed foods like pizza, and soft drinks full of added sugars, artificial flavours and other additives. Instead, prepare meals using whole foods like fish with herbs, spices and olive oil. Don’t buy groceries when you’re hungry. Buying food on an empty stomach means you’ll be tempted to buy sugary snacks, which are bad for you. Follow a well-balanced diet, and avoid a sugar crash by limiting your intake of sugary snacks and beverages.

By Val Sainsbury THINK of water as a nutrient your body needs, which is present in liquids and foods. Both these are essential, to replace the large amounts of water lost each day.

Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, passing urine, and bowel movements, and these losses must be replaced, daily, for good health. When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated. It’s no secret that water is vital to your health. In fact, water comprises 45-75% of your body weight, and plays a key role in heart health, weight management, physical performance and brain function. Studies show that upping your water intake may offer many health benefits. However, the amount of water you need is a subject of controversy, and drinking too much can harm your health. These are the benefits and downsides of drinking three litres of water, per day: Supports overall health Staying well hydrated is incredibly important, as water is needed for a variety of bodily processes, and is central to nearly every aspect of health and wellness.

Water, water, everywhere…

In particular, it helps to regulate body temperature, transport nutrients, maintain brain function, and enhance physical performance. Not getting enough water can be detrimental, potentially causing side effects like nausea, fatigue, constipation, headaches and dizziness. Therefore, drinking three litres of water a day may help you meet your hydration needs, to support better health. May boost weight loss Increasing your water intake may aid weight loss. Drinking water just before meals can be especially useful, as it can promote feelings of fullness, and reduce appetite. One study of 24 people found that drinking 500ml of water before breakfast reduced the number of calories consumed by 13%. Similarly, a small, 12week study showed that drinking 500ml of water before each meal, as part of a low-calorie diet, increased weight loss by 44%, compared with a control group. Drinking water may also temporarily boost your metabolism, which can increase the number of calories you burn, throughout the day. In a study of 16 people, drinking 500ml of water increased metabolism, temporarily, by 24%, over a one-hour period, which may aid weight loss.

6th - 12th September 2019

May improve skin health Some research suggests that drinking more water can help keep your skin supple and smooth. For example, a monthlong study of 49 people determined that increasing water intake, by two litres a day, improved skin hydration, especially in those who typically drank under 3.2 litres of water, daily. Another study in 40 older adults linked higher fluid intake to increased skin hydration and skinsurface pH. Skin pH plays an integral role in maintaining your skin’s barrier, which can influence the risk of certain skin conditions. Additionally, a review of six studies found that increased water intake reduced dryness and roughness, increased skin elasticity, and enhanced hydration. Other benefits Drinking more water may offer several other benefits as well, including: *Increased regularity: multiple studies associate low water intake with a higher risk of constipation. As such, drinking more water may promote bowel movements *Kidney stone prevention: one review of nine studies tied higher fluid intake to a lower risk of kidney stones

*Headache relief: research suggests that drinking more water can alleviate headaches caused by dehydration or fluid loss. *Mood improvement: according to one review, increasing water intake may aid both brain function and mood, especially in children and older adults. *Enhanced athletic ability: while dehydration can impair exercise performance, replacing fluids after physical activity can increase endurance, and decrease exercise-induced DNA damage. While drinking more water may aid your health, three litres may not be the right amount for everyone. Currently, no official recommendations exist for the intake of plain water, alone. The amount you need is based on several factors, such as age, gender and activity level. However, there are recommendations for total water intake, which includes water consumed through all foods and beverages, such as plain water, fruits and vegetables. A total daily intake of around 2.7 litres for women and 3.7 litres for men can meet

most adults’ needs. Depending on the other foods and beverages you consume, you may not need to drink three litres of water per day, to meet your fluid requirements. Simply listening to your body, and drinking when you feel thirsty, is one of the best ways to ensure that you’re staying hydrated. In fact, most people can meet their daily needs by drinking water when they’re thirsty. However, as we get older, our thirst mechanism may not be as reliable. We can become dehydrated, without actually feeling the need to drink. Making a conscious effort to drink water, throughout the day, is a good preventative measure. Notably, some individuals, such as athletes and manual labourers, may need more than three litres of water per day. Too much water can be dangerous Keep in mind that excessive water intake can make you very unwell. Drinking too much can disrupt your body’s electrolyte balance, leading to hyponatraemia, which is when the level of sodium in your blood reaches a dangerouslylow level. Symptoms of

hyponatraemia include weakness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, and, in severe cases, even death. Although your kidneys can excrete up to 2028 litres (4.5-6 gallons) of water per day, they can only process 800-1,000ml of water per hour. For this reason, it’s important to spread your water intake throughout the day, rather than drink it all in a single sitting. Additionally, be sure to listen to your body, and adjust your water intake accordingly, if you’re feeling unwell. Tips to help you drink more If you think you need to be drinking more, here are some tips to increase your fluid intake and reap the benefits of water: Have a beverage with every snack and meal Choose beverages you enjoy; you’re likely to drink more liquids if you like the way they taste. Eat more fruits and vegetables Their high water content will add to your hydration. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods. Keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk, or in your bag, and choose beverages that meet your individual needs.

CD Tenerife THERE’S no other way to put it: Tenerife were played off the park by Ponferradina, in a match that saw an own-goal, defensive mistakes, and not much in the way of attacking from the lacklustre away team. True, they did have possession at the beginning, but with no depth or penetration, it didn’t lead to anything. In fact, their defensive mistake led to the first goal, in the 16th minute. Larrea hoofed a looping long-ball for Ponferradina, looking for Yuri up front. It seemed to be looking for Sipcic to head away, but he misjudged it, and, somehow, the ball fell nicely for Yuri, who knocked it over Sipcic’s head and volleyed it straight past Ortolá to make it 1-0, out of nowhere! Following this, Tenerife had the ball a bit longer, but didn’t really give Manuel Garcia much to do in the Ponferradina goal, even when Malbasic had the ball in the net. Unfortunately, it was ruled out for a clear offside in the build-up. The second goal came in the first minute after the break. Isi, who had not really featured in the first half, broke down the right-hand

side, and put through a nice ball to right-back Son, who had made the overlap by running into the box and opening up the Tenerife defence. As Son pulled it back to find a Ponferradina striker, Sipcic stuck out his left foot to clear it. But, somehow, he guided it straight past an unexpectant Ortolá for an own-goal to give the home side a twogoal advantage, From then on, Tenerife lost all confidence, became leaky at the back, and there could have easily been two

or three more quick goals. In fact, the third came after an hour’s play, when Yuri became provider with a simple ball into the centre of the Tenerife area. Again, it should have been dealt with easily, but Brazilian Kaxe found himself six yards out, in front of goal, with the ball at his feet. No mistakes here, as he simply toe-poked it past Ortolá to make it 3-0, after another Tenerife defensive mistake. The rest of the match saw CDT suffer at the hands of a Ponferradina onslaught, in

Spain’s women topple England to win bronze SPAIN’S women’s team won their first Euro medal in 16 years, when they beat England in the thirdplace play-off match at the European Championship in Antwerp to claim bronze. And the Spanish men took silver after losing 5-0 to firsttime winners Belgium in the final. The Spanish women, who had to come from behind to draw 1-1, then took the medal by winning 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out. Hannah Martin opened the scoring for England in a close game, when an interception, deep in the Spanish half, set her up in the 10th minute. But six minutes later, Begona Garcia fired a ball into the circle, and Maria Tost diverted the ball past keeper Maddie Hinch. With the score level, the

45 CW

clash went to a shoot-out, with England taking a 2-1 lead. But two failures in a row meant they missed out on a medal at the event, for the first time since 2003. The Netherlands followed up their 8-0 thrashing of England in the semis with another impressive performance in the final, beating Germany 2-0 with goals in the first and final quarters. It was their sixth European final and their fifth success. Kelly Jonker opened the scoring in the 12th minute, before Lidewij Welten made the game safe as the final whistle approached. For Spain, the bronze was not the only title they brought home. Gigi Oliva was named Player of the Tournament, while in the men’s tournament, Belgium took their first Euro title. The World Cup holders, on home

soil, made the most of their noisy support, to take the trophy. They had beaten Spain 5-0 in the tournament opener before posting an identical score in the final. In the third-placed playoff match, the Dutch beat Germany 4-0 to gain a medal for the eighth consecutive Euro Championship. England beat Scotland 3-0 to take fifth place, condemning their opponents to relegation from the top tier, and leaving Wales to battle it out against Ireland, to avoid the last relegation spot. Wales needed to beat the Irish, for the first time since 2006, but by two clear goals. They completed their task emphatically with a 4-0 win, sending Ireland and Scotland down, in the process.

which they scored another goal, this time a well-taken effort from 37-year-old Yuri, also known as Papi! Carlos Bravo played a lovely throughball to Yuri on the edge of the box. He picked it up and took on the Tenerife defence with tricks of which Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud, before going to the right and dinking it over a sprawling Ortolá, who could do nothing. So, Ponferradina four goals ahead after 74 minutes, and the final whistle couldn’t come quick enough for

Lopez Garai’s men, who could have no excuses for a poor performance against a strong Ponferradina, promoted from Segunda B last year. Tenerife find themselves in a familiar position after three games… 16th, with yet again poor away form, with eight goals conceded. It’s something Garai has said needs to change as soon as possible, especially taking into account their next match is against their old enemies, Las Palmas, tomorrow (Saturday)!

Shock Federer defeat paves way for Spanish rival Nadal ROGER Federer suffered a shock defeat against Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of the US Open on Wednesday, after lengthy treatment to an arm injury in the fourth set. The 20-time Grand Slam winner seemed destined for a boxoffice final against Spain’s Rafael Nadal, in what would have been the first meeting at Flushing Meadows by the great rivals. But Bulgarian Dimitrov spoiled that possible showdown by securing a maiden win over the Swiss, who needed a medical time-out, and looked out of sorts throughout the fiveset defeat. Dimitrov had not beaten Federer in any of their previous seven matches, and had taken just two sets off him. But all was clearly not well with Federer, who hit an unprecedented 60 unforced errors. He had been flexing his racket arm during the fourth set, and, in a rare occurrence, the 38-year-old took a lengthy

break from court for treatment, before the start of the decider. Two breaks of the Federer serve later put Dimitrov 4-0 up, and in uncharted territory. But his opponent made 28-year-old Dimitrov serve out the match, and he did so, comfortably, to seal the biggest win of his career, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6 6-4 6-2. “After the second set, I felt I was getting a good stride on my shots,” he said. “We had a really long game in the fourth set, and I wanted to make him stay on court for long as possible.” With Wimbledon conqueror Novak Djokovic out, also injured earlier, Federer knew he had the best chance available to win major title No.21.

Champs carry on cruising THERE seems to be no stopping reigning league champions Pas O Nadas A, who cruised to a simple 8-0 victory against Waterfall. But it was reported that Waterfall captain Sue, playing in only her second league match, will be winning games very soon. A much-closer clash was played out between old rivals Gaffers and The Pub, with Wolves fan Tomo hitting a 180, and Joe a 108 finish for Gaffers. Ally replied with a 106 check-out, for The Pub, before Gaffers took

the trebles, to level the scores at 4-4. Harvey, from Mad Hatters, was clearly on form, hitting two maximums, while Steve, from Suters 20:30 Crew, replied with one of his own. But though Mad Hatters won the 180 count, Suters 18:30 Crew took the honours, with a decisive 7-1 scoreline. It is difficult to know where it has all gone wrong for last year’s Division 2 champs. Apart from a cracking 8-0 win in Week 2, Loch Inn Bullseyes haven’t managed to capture more than one game in a match, this season. That dreadful run continued, as they welcomed Sandys

double trouble, going down 6-2. Clouseau’s were looking good, as they forged into a 4-1 lead at Sundowners, but the home side came back strongly, to claim the remaining games, for a

creditable 4-4 draw. Picasso’s won the team game, and, in the process, a 5-3 result at Naughty Nautas, while Pas’O’Nadas welcomed Club Activo, who proved too strong, and ran out 6-2 winners.

Bookie Boys, who showed how to finish, taking home a 7-1 victory. Last year’s Division 2 runners-up, Emerald B, have also found promotion to Division 1 tough going. But they notched a second win of the season, when they travelled to Scooters A, and came away

with a 6-2 win, which, undoubtedly, helped captain Jackie to celebrate her birthday. Our Place Playboys, away to Sandys Bandits, beat them 5-3, with Ben’s 101 finish, the best on show. However, congratulations to Bandits’ Dave, who played his part in all three points they gained. In Division 2, Pink Elephant kept their winning run intact, with an emphatic 8-0 whitewash of Marilyns. The Club House were also in fine form, gaining a comfortable 7-1 win against Emerald Lounge. Our Place Breakaways were beaten 6-2 on their visit to Palms Sports Bar.
