Family club together, in the hunt for Peter

20th - 26th September 2019

Continued from Front

The parents, family and friends of Peter Wilson are among those who travelled to the island last weekend, to conduct an organised search of ravines and the mountainside. Some of the funding for travel and accommodation came via a fund-raising campaign, launched on gofundme.com and totalling over £5,352 (€6,000). The 32-year-old’s relatives were helped by the “SOS Disappeared in the Canaries” organisation, and posters have been displayed, as well as appeals on social network. Peter, from Rochfortbridge, Co. Westmeath, travelled to Tenerife on Friday, 22nd March for a week’s holiday. He was last seen leaving his Costa Adeje hotel at around 11pm on the day after he arrived, walking towards the nightlife area of Playa de las Americas. He was staying at the Malibu Park Hotel. The fund-raising campaign was set up by Gary McGivney, Peter’s cousin, who said: “We are all devastated and heartbroken by his disappearance. “We do not believe he went missing by choice. He did not have money, and had left his room without his passport and belongings, and never returned. “Peter is a daddy to two beautiful little girls. He is a loved son, brother, cousin and friend to many, and his family are so concerned for him.” Some 20 relatives and friends from Ireland flew to Tenerife for the search, which has been concentrated around

the more remote areas of Los Cristianos and Las Americas, both surrounded by mountains, deep ravines and isolated pathways. His parents, now back home from their fourth trip to Tenerife, posted this Facebook message: “We are completely gutted, heartbroken, numb, deflated, but it wasn’t for the want of trying, and such hard work and dedication from the search party; such an amazing group of people! We want to say a massive thank-you to everyone who took part in this search. *To Santiago Carlos Martin, who is boss of sos (Dee will have explained who and what all these people are in her post), and for the help of Gebe Canarias members. They came over from Gran Canaria on Friday night to assist, and gave excellent pre-search advice to all taking part, which gave Peter and myself great comfort to have them on board, to

ensure the well-being and safety of all taking part. *To the firefighters, who came on Sunday to assist using two drones; to the helicopter pilot, who also gave the lads great advice and helped to narrow the search to places of interest. In addition: *Thanks to all who donated equipment, etc. *Heaven pharmacy for first-aid kits for all. *Tom Blythe, Lynn Communications, for the walkie-talkies (great asset). *David Andrews, Mullingar hardware for high-vis vests. Jerry & Jimmy Cleary, of Cleary Electrical, for assistance and training of drone. *To Beverly and friends of Noah’s Ark, who have been there for us from day one. *To the tourists who showed up to assist, especially one lovely lady, Pilar Doniz Siverio, whose husband went missing in Adeje three years ago. It could not have been easy for her, but she was amazing.

If you see this lady’s post, appealing for people to share, please do because she is amazing, and has a 14-year-old daughter, who misses her daddy so much. *To Deena Edwards, who has put up posters for the past six months. She continues to do so, and looks out for Peter on her daily walks every day *To Katrina Lowry, who has been a Godsend to us from day one. She has also been there for us, at a moment’s notice, to assist in the translation with police, Santiago, etc, such an amazing young lady. We love you, K. *Thanks to Carmel and Dee, who worked very hard to make up the great T-shirts for the search. *And a very special thanks to our family: Gary, Paul, Joe, Anthony, Liam, Shane, Paddy, Claire, Dee and Niamh. Such troopers! Their dedication, hard work, compassion, concern and comfort was truly amazing.

You should be so proud of yourselves, because we could not be more proud to be part of such an amazing, supportive family, and we don’t want any of you to think you’ve failed us in any way, or let us down. You went over and above, without any fuss, in very hot, hard conditions. And while this search might not have been a success, each and every one of you is a WINNER in our eyes. Thank you so much. x. Again, we want to thank every single one of you, who have donated, fund-raised, etc, to make this search possible, and we hope you understand the reasons why we could only invite immediate family and a few others to help us. As you will see from the pics Dee has posted, it was not easy ground to work on, but all your generosity made it possible. We would also like to say thank you to the friends of Nana and Grandad, who were so good to look after the kiddies over the past few days. Our thanks also to our great neighbour, Ann, who’s always there to take care of our dog, and to Mary Whelehan Gavin, always on hand to take in and look after our old dog, Max. We came away with some comfort from Tenerife this time, because we have been told that the Gebe Canarias are now involved, and they will continue to search for Peter until he is found. The firefighters say they will also continue to keep an eye out when they are out and about, so thanks again to all involved. So much appreciated. Jackie, Peter, Debbie xxx”

Tenerife is becoming essential cruise point

TENERIFE’s main port, Santa Cruz, is rapidly becoming the vital cruise hub, backed up by the Los Cristianos port, according to Airam Díaz, commercial director, Ports of Tenerife. “In 2019, we expect around 519 calls and over 1,040,215 cruise passengers, specifically, at these two ports,” he said. “2019 is on a par with

2018, which set a record in the region, surpassing one million cruise passengers for the first time.” Diaz added: “We are a destination that is practically essential on both routes,” pointing to repositioning sailings, as well as Mediterranean cruises and Canary Island deployments. “The cruise lines are loyal to choosing the Canary Islands as a winter destination, and that trend seems to be continuing.” Among the highlights was

Teenager stabbing is probed by police A TEENAGER was attacked last Monday evening in the La Laguna neighbourhood of Finca España de San Cristobal.

The 14-year-old was stabbed in the abdomen with a blade, for reasons not known, but the emergency services received a call at 7.30pm, requesting an ambulance at Calle Santaella. When the ambulance team arrived, the youngster was already being treated by an individual, who claimed he was a medic. The ambulance team stabilised the teenager, before taking him to the local University Hospital for further treatment. Fortunately, the wound wasn’t serious, but National Police are investigating the events leading up to the incident.

The Insular Water Council and the Port Authority have been contacted by the Environmental Department, in case any last-minute incidents are reported. Testing, to solve the problem as soon as possible, will continue, so the Council can guarantee safe bathing for its users.

E.coli forces closure of Los Cristianos beach

TENERIFE’S Health Department ordered the closure of Los Cristianos Beach on Tuesday, after an inspection detected the presence of E.coli bacteria in the water.

This is a preventive measure, carried out to ensure the safety of bathers. A routine inspection was carried out when the bacteria was discovered, leading to the beach being closed to the public, and entry into the water denied as a precautionary measure. Arona Council is carrying out an investigation into why the sea-water quality has dropped, and why the bacteria is present in the Los Cristianos waters, particularly as the area is

A FURIOUS air passenger was thrown off a flight to Gatwick from Gran Canaria, after shouting at the cabin crew and threatening to cut off a flight attendant’s head.

The man launched a foulmouthed rant at his female companion, as well as the cabin crew, who tried to calm him down on board the Thomas Cook jet. Another passenger filmed the angry confrontation as he sat patiently in a nearby seat, awaiting take-off. It is not clear what angered the man so much, but he shouted furiously about his son and daughter, at his unseen companion. Police were eventually summoned to drag him off the flight, and he has now been banned from returning to the UK with Thomas Cook. The man who filmed the episode, said: “He was really going crazy. He was from London, and I managed to film most of it as I was sitting behind them.” At the start of the clip, the angry passenger is seen leaping out of his seat, with a number of people standing in the galley to deal with what has already become a problem. Bus passenger is stabbed in neck

A MAN aged 22 was stabbed in the neck by a knife-wielding attacker, during a fight on a bus last Sunday morning in Adeje.

According to the emergency services’ operator, who received a call just before 6.30am, there was a fight on the bus and the caller requested an ambulance, claiming the injured man needed urgent medical assistance.

The incident happened on Avenida Brusselas, and, when the ambulance arrived, medics attended to the injured man promptly, stabilising him quickly before he was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment. The severity of his wounds meant he was later transferred to the Candelaria Hospital for specialised treatment. National and Local Police, along with the Guardia Civil, are collaborating in an attempt to resolve the case.

You f****** started it all.” A flight attendant crouches down by the man’s seat and urges him to “talk to me”, but the seething passenger threatens to “chop your f****** head off”. The attendant admonishes him, saying: “Talk to me nicely. I don’t come to work to be talked to like that.” He urges the man to talk to him at the back of the plane, where it was relatively quiet, but the passenger is again distracted, feuding with his partner. When the man launches another outburst about his son and daughter, the steward tries again to reason with him, saying: “Come with me; talk to me. Come and talk to me in the galley.” Another passenger filmed the angry confrontation as he sat, patiently, in a nearby seat. The steward stands in an adjacent row, trying to

reason with the man, and yet another passenger filmed the angry confrontation, as he sat patiently in a nearby seat, hoping for take-off. But as the row continues, the unruly man puts his head in his hand, dejectedly, and tells other passengers to “carry on”. The steward tries again to lead the man away, and asks: “Are you going to talk to me nicely” The passenger refuses, saying: “No, because you’re going to chuck me off.” He finally gets up again and walks towards the front of the aircraft, at which point there appears to be some further altercation, hidden from view by the back of a seat. His companion shouts; “Please, you’re not helping yourself,” before the video cuts out. The man, who was eventually led off the flight by police, will not be allowed to fly back to the UK with the airline. A company spokeswoman said: “The safety of our customers and crew is always our first priority. Following disruptive behaviour from a passenger onboard flight MT1069, police were called to the aircraft and removed a passenger, before leaving Gran Canaria.” She added: “We will not tolerate any form of abusive behaviour on board Thomas Cook Airlines.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Moroccans arrested Bus knocks down teenager

A TEENAGER was injured after being knocked over by a Titsa bus in Taco, Calle Cristo, during last Monday’s morning rush-hour.

The incident happened just after 8.10 and a call was made, promptly, to the emergency services, requesting an ambulance, after the caller had relayed the details. The ambulance arrived almost immediately and medics quickly examined the 17-year-old, who had suffered leg injuries, which needed expert medical attention. He was taken to the University hospital for further treatment.

Police cyber-scam warning

THE Guardia Civil have sounded the alarm over a sex-tape extortion scam in Spain. According to the police body, victims are sent an email which threatens to send an alleged video to all their contacts, of them engaged in sexual acts.

They are then given 72 hours to pay the scammers €2,000 in bitcoin to stop the release of said clips. Police have warned that such emails should be ignored because it’s a scam. If anyone has made a payment, he or she is advised to compile all the evidence of contact and payment and send it to the Fuerzas y Cuerpos de Seguridad del Estado (FCSE). One email from a scammer read: “I am writing to you because I put a malware on the porn page you have visited. “My virus recorded all your information and activated your webcam, and I must admit that you are very perverted. “I will delete the compromising video and the information if you pay me €2,000 in bitcoin. “If you do not send the payment within the next 48 hours, I will send this video to all your friends and partners.”

for violent robbery

TWO Moroccans, aged 35 and 32, have been arrested by National Police and charged with a violent robbery, in Las Veronicas.

The events unfolded when the officers, patrolling the Las Americas strip, spotted two men running away and acting suspiciously, so they followed them. They noticed one trying to discard what appeared to be a wallet, and, just then, security staff working the door at a bar told them a tourist had been attacked, violently, and robbed. The officers, who found the victim being helped by a security guard, called for immediate medical assistance because he was covered in blood.

When the police questioned him, they were told that both men went to work on him. As soon as he realised what was happening, one of them hit him on the head with a bottle, leaving him on the floor and slightly concussed. The incident was also confirmed by his friends, and both Moroccans, one with a police record for similar

offences, were detained and identified. During their questioning, officers noticed that one of them had a hand injury, matching wounds that could, possibly, have been caused by the bottle used to attack the tourist. Both men were arrested and taken to the police station for further questioning.

with a new weekly Friday flight, from 15th November to 13th December. The Canary Islands continue to be a year-round favourite with holiday-makers. On top of additional services to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the company also offers year-round services to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, from Leeds Bradford Airport. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2. com and Jet2holidays said: “This is fantastic news for customers in Yorkshire. “As the region’s biggest airline and tour operator, we have responded quickly to extra demand for our award-winning flights and ATOL-protected package holidays to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, by putting on additional seats and

larger aircraft. With more services and frequencies, holidaymakers now have even more choice and flexibility when it comes to where and when they would like to enjoy a getaway.” John Cunliffe, Aviation & Commercial Director at Leeds Bradford Airport, added: “We’re delighted that Jet2. com and Jet2holidays are continuing to expand their offering to some of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations. “The investment to increase passenger numbers shows that demand for Winter holiday travel remains strong. We look forward to working closely with the airline to welcome more holidaymakers from across the Yorkshire region.”

Jet2 lays on extra flights to Canaries

Guardia Civil officers have been investigating the death of the driver, in his 40s, who was found last Sunday. Although the area in which he was found had been affected by the weekend’s storms, police are not connecting his death to localised flooding. Indications are that the man died after his car rolled on to him. He was found crushed between a large garden planter and his vehicle, at the bottom of a steep driveway. Apparently, his family had not heard from him since the Wednesday. They decided to check the house after Saturday’s storms to make sure it was not damaged, but found his body instead.

10 hurt in motorway crash

A MULTIPLE vehicle collision, involving four cars, was reported on Sunday morning on the TF-1, resulting in 10 travellers needing medical attention. The accident happened near the Granadilla Poly industrial estate, and an emergency message was received by the operator just after midday, the caller explaining the situation. All the vehicles had turned on to their sides, and several people needed medical attention. Various medical ambulances and fire-fighters, along with the police, were dispatched to the scene, and, upon arrival, medics began evaluating the injuries. Every person needed medical assistance, including two minors. They were all taken to various hospitals in the surrounding areas to receive treatment. This incident was one of several accidents registered this weekend across Spain, the DGT Spanish Traffic department registering seven traffic collisions last weekend between Friday 3pm and Sunday 8pm, the mortality rate hitting a tragic seven.

JET2 is adding more than 11,000 additional seats to the Canary Islands for Winter 2019/20, to cater for the extra demand at Leeds Bradford Airport.

Additional flights and larger aircraft will support this expansion. There will be a new, weekly, Thursday service to Fuerteventura from 13th February to 14th May, which means there will be up to three weekly services to the island. The company will also be putting on larger aircraft for a period during November. There will also be a bigger choice of Lanzarote flights,

Guardia rescue a cyclist from port

Guardia pull out the stops to save a child GUARDIA Civil officers in Gran Canaria saved the life of a young girl on Sunday morning, after hearing several people raising the alarm by screaming and shouting for help. The incident happened at around 11.40am, and, when the officers reached the scene, between Calle Tinajo and Anotio de Viana, they came across a group of people acting uncontrollably nervously. The officers took a closer look and came across a 21-monthold child convulsing on the

OFFICERS and crew from Guardia Civil patrol boat Pico del Teide, docked in the Los Cristianos port, rescued a man on Monday at around 10pm. He had fallen from his bike, off the dockside and into an immigrants’ wooden boat, which arrived at the port days earlier, and had been occupied by 28 North Africans. The vessel was anchored

close to the patrol boat, whose crew saw the incident and realised that the man, aged 52, was bleeding profusely from one of his ears. He complained to the officers of having severe pain in his chest and arms, having tumbled some 2.5 metres. The injured man was carried on a stretcher to the dockside, where an ambulance was waiting for him. Medics assessed the cyclist’s injuries and stabilised him, before taking him to hospital because of a scalp wound, bruising and fractured bones.

TENERIFE’S long-awaited rains and storms on Monday night enabled the sky across the Canary Islands to display the most spectacular images, specifically taken at Teide National Park. The archipelago is entering the season of the “hunting clouds”, and experts are expecting more storms. Astrologer Daniel López captured the images, claiming that they were taken “from the best skies on the planet”. And he has shared the images across his social media. The images, from the season’s first major storm, were taken

ground. The pale-faced girl was unconscious, so officers radioed through for an ambulance. But the situation was obviously serious, and, unaware of how long it would take for the ambulance to arrive, the officers, along with two family members, took the toddler to the nearby El cento de Salud de El Doctoral medical centre. While the officers raced through the streets to get the necessary medical attention needed, family members, travelling in the back seat of

the patrol car with the girl, were forced to perform CPR on the child because she had stopped breathing. It wasn’t long before the Guardia officers reached the centre, where the child was stabilised, immediately, before being transferred to the island’s Children’s and Maternity University General Hospital. The delighted officers, and the toddler’s family, have since reported that the little girl is recuperating and doing well, yet still under close observation.

across social media on Tuesday morning, already with hundreds and hundreds of likes.

Beware these crafty stingrays

‘Suicide cliff’ selfie girls taken to task

POLICE have criticised three girls for taking a selfie on the edge of a cliff, known to be a popular suicide spot.

A TOURIST on a popular beach in La Gomera has shown the frightening reality of several large stingrays, hidden in the sandy shallows.

He filmed a scene earlier this month at Valle Hermoso, which showed how many swimmers, completely unaware, were paddling there, while a number of stingrays hid under the sands. An adventurous person even tapped one ray on the fin, causing it to move over and swim off. But they won’t all behave like that!

A shocking snap taken by officers shows the teens perched on a ledge, over a 20-metre drop. The trio of millennials were trying to capture the moment at Gijon’s Santa Catalina hill, where a couple fell to their death, accidentally, according to El Espanol.

Local Police officers then travelled on foot to rescue the minors, asking them calmly to return to safety. The operation, reportedly, lasted several minutes, before officers explained to the young daredevils why their actions were dangerous. An online statement from Gijon’s Local Police read: “Do you really think this is a safe place to take selfies? “This afternoon, we intervened with a group of young people, who did not see the risk.”

Do we refloat 2,700-year boat, or just abandon it? HISTORIANS, who are considering what to do with a Phoenician boat found off the Murcia coast of Mazarrón, have decided to leave it on the sea bed for now. The craft, dating back to the seventh century BC and baptised the Mazarrón II, was discovered in 1994 and has remained there since. But a recent inspection by expert, marine-archaeologist divers from the National Underwater Archaeology Museum (ARWVA), shows that it is in far better condition than they expected. After 25 years under the sea since its discovery, heritage pundits feared it would be falling into ruin, but were pleasantly surprised at how it had not deteriorated greatly in that time. Román Fernández-Baca Casares, is Director-General of fine arts for the Scientific Commission for Monitoring the National Underwater Heritage Protection Plan, which is part of the central government’s culture ministry. He says a full analysis will be carried out before deciding whether it will be safe to bring the 2,700-year-old vessel to the surface, or whether it should be left where it is to prevent it falling apart. “We need to ensure the best

possible conservation process, by increasing the number of risk-analyses carried out, which will show us the way ahead,” he added. “This, of course, does not rule out extracting the boat.” For now, the most recent Commission meeting concluded that urgent protection measures needed to be taken to preserve the craft, which Fernández-Baca describes as a unique testimony of Naval construction in the western Mediterranean, from the BC era. The Commission is divided on whether to try to bring up the boat, although those in favour of doing so straight away are said to be in the minority. The boat, on the sea floor off the Playa de la Isla beach, is shown above in a photograph taken by Mazarrón town hall.

Hull of a drug haul by Guardia’s divers

GUARDIA Civil officers, along with the Spanish Customs, have seized a 52kg cocaine haul, hidden carefully in a ship.

It was actually heading for Valencia, but it stopped off for a maintenance check in Gran Canaria, after a long trip from Brazil. The drugs were discovered at the beginning of August, hidden carefully among various mechanical parts of the ship. collecting important information, which could lead to them discovering new ways of drug-trafficking. It is an exercise in attempting to prevent the trafficking into Europe, specifically Spanish territory. The Guardia Civil have also obtained information about new smuggling methods. And, in this case, the “blind hook” technique was used. This particular smuggling method consists of attaching the product to specific areas of the submerged part of the ship, making drug detection even more difficult. Guardia officers, with the help of the Customs, located the ship during the early hours

People-trafficking network is busted

NATIONAL Police, in collaboration with Europol, have uncovered a criminal organisation dedicated to human trafficking. It was also responsible for abducting children from Spanish protection centres, and taking them to France and Belgium. Almeria port was used as the main departure point for transferring illegal immigrants on Moroccan, Spanish and French company buses, either to Strasbourg or Brussels. The gang also used the buses to traffic hashish and hunting species. Police reported that the or-

ganisation had a network of specialised captors, according to nationality, including Moroccans, Algerians, Malians and Syrians. Gang members approached immigrants, making it to the Spanish coast on small boats, or by other means, and offered to take them to France or Belgium from Almeria … charging them up to three times more than regular passengers. The specialist Mali group snatched unaccompanied young Malians from a protection centre in Almeria, using violence against social workers to get them out. The buses made numerous stops on the route north, in Murcia, Alicante, Barcelona

and Tarragona, picking up more passengers at so called “black ticket offices” in hotels and phone-booth outlets known to immigrants. The business even managed to be awarded professional status at Madrid, Barcelona and Murcia bus stations. When the buses got close to France, cars were sent on ahead to check for police controls, or the vehicles were taken through villages to try to avoid detection. At La Junquera, on the border, all irregular passengers were made to get off the buses and go by taxi to the nearest service station in France, where they got back on the bus. The operation resulted in 29 arrests: 11 in Almeria, five in Murcia, three in Alicante, three in Barcelona, two in Valencia, one in Tarragona, one in Bilbao, and another three in France. Searches of 13 homes and premises in Spain, and one in France, also led to the seizure of €33,000, more than 200kg of hash, as well as all sorts of documentation. Investigations into the network’s activities in Spain were first launched after French police informed their Spanish colleagues that they had arrested a Spanish national for driving a bus on which there were 22 illegal immigrants, six of them underage youngsters, of various African nationalities.

Listeria looms again as family are struck

THE Junta issued a new health alert for listeria in Malaga, after a meat product was found to be carrying the deadly bacteria.

The affected product is Chicharron Especial, by La Montanera del Sur, which is produced by Benaojan company Incarybe SL. The brand has now ceased production as a precaution, after a 47-year-old man tested positive for listeria after eating the meat product. The Junta has ordered the closure of the factory, and, as a precaution, has halted production of all products made by Incarybe SL. The Ministry of Health and Families said the sample of the “Chicharrón Especial, which tested positive, was

taken by Junta inspectors on 6th September. The family were served the infected product in Ronda. It happened after seven people from the same family went to Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital with symptoms of food poisoning, after consuming the product in a Ronda restaurant. One of the group, the 47-year-old male, tested positive for listeria, and three others have tested negative, while the test results for the remaining three are pending. The man who tested positive for listeria had flown back to his home in England, where he lives, before receiving his results. He is receiving treatment there. The patient’s wife has also been admitted to hospital, although the results of her analysis have not tested positive for listeria.

Man shot dead his wife, her mother and sister!

A MAN has confessed to shooting dead his wife in the presence of their two children, aged four and seven. He then walked into the family home and shot her mother and sister. The triple murder took place in the hamlet of Carracido, in north-western Spain’s Pontevedra province. The couple were going through divorce proceedings, and

José Luis Abet then returned to his house in Bertamiráns, some 20km away in the Ames municipality, and called the Guardia Civil to confess his horrific deeds. The killer was arrested there and brought to the Guardia station for further questioning. Sources close to the victims said that early last Monday, Abet showed up at the house the couple had built for themselves when they married. There was no record of domestic-violence complaints, and the husband

had moved out when they split up. His wife, 39-year-old Alba Boquete Jamardo, was preparing to go to work when he showed up. Her sister Sandra, 27, and 59-year-old mother María Elena, were there to help her with the kids, as they usually did at that time. Alba was standing outside the car, with the children inside the vehicle, when Abet approached and shot her with a handgun, according to a reconstruction of events provided by Maica Larriba,

a Pontevedra government official. The man then walked into the house and shot the other women. Residents in the hamlet, comprising around 40 homes, heard the shots, and one of them approached the scene and guided the children to safety. A close relative had taken them in their care, said Mayor José María Bello, in a statement to the Europa Press news agency. Abet, who owns a frozenfood business, has a child from an earlier relationship. His ex-wife’s neighbours said the couple had been having problems for a couple of years, although nobody could recall how long they had been separated. In recent weeks, said one

resident: “Abet had been behaving strangely, and was getting along very poorly with the community.” He did not resist arrest when Guardia officers showed up at the home he had been sharing with his own mother and sister. The murder weapon has not been found, but Abet had no gun licence and no criminal record. Investigators believe he might have bought the gun on the black market. Last March, a 47-year-old man shot his wife and then committed suicide in this same municipality. So far in Spain this year, 40 women have been killed by their current or former partners. The tally since 2003, when records began, is 1,015.

POLITICAL leaders spent two days this week in the company of King Felipe VI, who announced in a statement on Tuesday evening that he would not be proposing a candidate for another investiture vote.

It means that Spain is closer than ever to its fourth general election in as many years, after its political parties failed to reach a governing deal in the wake of the inconclusive 28th April polls. Despite months of negotiations, no agreement has been reached between the Socialist Party (PSOE), which won most seats at the April vote but fell short of a majority, and its most likely partner, left-wing Unidas Podemos. Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has also been unable to strike any kind of deal with the other two biggest parties on Spain’s political spectrum, the conservative Popular Party (PP) and Ciudadanos (Citizens). Following established procedure, Spain’s King Felipe VI has been meeting with the leaders of parties with a congressional presence, to see whether Sánchez had enough support among the deputies in Congress, Spain’s lower house of parliament, to be voted back into office as Prime Minister. After the round of meetings concluded, Meritxell Batet, the speaker of Congress, met the King to discuss his conclusions. Following that encounter, the Royal Household released an official statement, saying that the King would not be presenting a candidate. Felipe VI, the document read, “has concluded that there is no candidate who counts on the necessary support for the Congress of Deputies to lend him its confidence”. Barring any last-minute surprises, parliament will be dissolved in the coming week, and a repeat general

election called for 10th November. However, one last-ditch attempt is still possible. Formally speaking, no deadline has been passed, so the last moment an investiture vote could take place is by midnight on Monday. This means the King could still propose a candidate, should Spain’s political parties inform him that someone has the support for an investiture vote. But they would have to complete the deal this week, between Wednesday and Thursday, to beat the procedural clock. After meeting with eight party leaders on Monday, the monarch sat down on Tuesday with representatives from the Catalan nationalists of Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia), En Comú Podem (the Catalan branch of Podemos), Vox, Podemos, Ciudadanos, the

PP and the PSOE. But the scenario emerging as the day progressed was pessimistic, with most parties telling the King they planned to vote against Sánchez, or abstain at the very least, if he decided to submit to a vote this weekend. For its part, the PSOE has made clear, repeatedly, that Sánchez would not stand at a fresh investiture vote, should he not have the necessary support to win it. At around 9pm on Tuesday evening, Sánchez spoke to reporters, saying: “I tried by all means available, but they made it impossible for me,” in reference to the other parties involved in talks. He added: “I tried to form the government that, in my judgement, Spain needs in the face of the challenges that are ahead of us. “Spain does not need a government for an investiture, but rather a government for the term. But two

conservative political forces, the PP and Ciudadanos, and leftist political force Unidas Podemos, have decided to block the formation of the government Spaniards want. “They have said on four occasions that Spain wants to take a progressive route and we call on them to do so, even more clearly on 10th November.” The PP leader, Pablo Casado, said on Tuesday evening after his meeting with the King: “I share with the majority of Spaniards, the sensation of not knowing how we have come to this point.” He added that his party’s position had been “coherent, responsible and open to dialogue,” claiming: “I had the feeling that we had got to the point Sánchez wanted, since 28th April.” Sánchez has been refusing reiterated calls by Podemos for a coalition government, in exchange for its support. The PSOE, which has 123 lawmakers in Congress following the 28th April election, is well short of the 175 seats needed to form a government. But for the last five months, all attempts at majority-building have failed. An earlier attempt by Sánchez, who had been pushing for a singleparty executive, submitted his plan to Congress in July but was voted down. Just hours ahead of his own appointment with King Felipe VI on Tuesday afternoon, Sánchez telephoned the PP, Ciudadanos and Podemos leaders to try to secure an 11th-hour deal, thus avoiding a repeat election.

But Podemos chief Pablo Iglesias, who met with the monarch that morning, was not convinced. “Wanting to be Prime Minister in exchange for nothing? I’m not sure that’s the most reasonable thing,” he said, after his meeting. And Ciudadanos chief Albert Rivera, who surprised everyone on Monday with an offer to abstain if certain conditions were met, withdrew the offer on Tuesday evening, after describing Sánchez’s response as “a mockery”. The conditions involve a pledge not to raise income tax, reorganising political alliances in the northern Spanish region of Navarre, and taking a hard line on the Catalan independence crisis. After meeting King Felipe, Rivera said: “Sánchez wants the other parties to give him our votes, without any conditions in return, which is unheard of.” Ciudadanos wants a written pledge that the government will not grant pardons to the Catalan secessionist leaders, who were tried at the Supreme Court this year, if they should be found guilty in a ruling that’s expected in the coming weeks. In a letter signed by Sánchez and sent to Ciudadanos on Tuesday morning, the PSOE insisted it was already meeting these conditions. It also asked Rivera to unblock the situation, honour the will of Spaniards, and avoid an unnecessary, repeat election.

Youngsters are digesting even more plastic in food PLASTIC by-products were found in an alarming 97-100% of blood and urine samples, taken from 2,500 children tested between 2014 and 2017, according to a new study by the German Environment Ministry and the Robert Koch Institute.

German weekly magazine Der Spiegel published the findings, which were part of a federal study, focused on “human biomonitoring” of youngsters, aged from three to 17. Traces from 11 out of 15 plastic ingredients were found in the test samples. “Our study clearly shows that plastic ingredients, which are rising in production, are also showing up more and more in the body,” said Marike Kolossa-Gehring, one of the study’s authors. “It is really worrying that the youngest children are most affected as the most

sensitive group,” she told the magazine. Researchers said that they were especially concerned about high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) found in the study. PFOA is an extremely persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemical, used frequently in non-stick cookware and in waterproof clothing. Some 20% of those examined were above the limit, and, in the younger children, the proportion was even higher. The study also showed children from poorer families had more plastic residue in their bodies than children from higher-income families, according to German public broadcaster ARD. “It cannot be that every fourth child, between the ages of three and five, is so heavily burdened with chemicals that long-term damage cannot be reliably ruled out,” said Hoffmann. “The Federal Government must make every effort to protect people from harmful chemicals. Provision is an obligation.”

The chemical is dangerous for the reproductive system and is toxic to the liver. While a global ban of perfluorooctanoic acid will take effect in 2020, a group of international NGOs have criticised the EU for requiring an exemption for medical textiles from a global ban on the use of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), agreed at the UN Conference of the Parties (COPs) last May. In a statement, NGOs,

including the Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL), Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) and Arnika, expressed “deep regret and disapproval” for the request, which could “undermine an otherwise effective worldwide ban”. Delegates from more than 180 countries agreed to the prohibition of the chemical’s use, adding it to Annex III of the Stockholm Convention at the Geneva conference.

However, several exemptions for the substance, including one for medical textiles, were requested by the EU delegation, along with China and Iran, and approved. The new German research was made available by the government, upon request by a Green Party inquiry into the effects of chemicals on public health. Bettina Hoffmann, an environmental health expert, said there had not been enough research on how plastic chemicals affected the body, and how they were ingested. The study results also show an increase in exposure to substitutes for previously banned chemicals, which Hoffmann sees as a critical signal. “Substances classified as dangerous should not be replaced by similar chemicals with, likewise, questionable properties, she says. The results of the study include, for example, the exposure to substances contained in cosmetics, children’s toys or medical devices.

Fundación CLC World salutes two decades of charitable commitment

FUNDACIÓN CLC World celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a commemorative Gala last Friday.

More than 200 people gathered at Safari restaurant on CLC World Resorts & Hotel’s Costa del Sol resort to enjoy a magnificent evening, during which attendees sampled a cocktail made with Gatehouse Gin, distilled at CLC World’s Scottish resort, enlivened by the Malaga group Dry Martina. Associations throughout the province, authorities, media, sponsors, collaborators, partners, representatives of the company, as well as the ambassadors and volunteers of the Foundation, did not want to miss such an emblematic date. Roy Peires, Fundación CLC World’s founder, told those present why he set up the charity. “I have been in business in Spain for 35 years, and it is a second home to me,” he said. “My philosophy is that wherever I operate and

Meningitis threat, by raw slugs and snails!

am successful, it is my duty to reinvest and support members of the local community, whether that is through financial aid, volunteering or donation of goods.” Juan Miguel Marcos, President of Fundación CLC World, thanked everyone present, particularly the volunteers, “Without you, none of this would be possible,” he said. “Your time and kindness, so generously given to those who most need it, has helped sustain this great project. I am enormously privileged to be part of this great family.” The Foundation’s main objective is: “To offer maximum support and improve the quality of life of groups and individuals in need on the Costa del Sol and Tenerife”. And it has made great strides

in achieving that aim in the last two decades. As its President said: “20 years in which we have exceeded two million euros in financial contributions, to which we must add donations of food, furniture, clothing, computer equipment and other provisions.” Throughout the Gala celebration, Fundación CLC World recognised the continued support of all those present, and reaffirmed its commitment to society in general. Special thanks to the event sponsors: Galpe, Konica Minolta, BMW (Automotor), El Corte Inglés, Sánchez Valle Abogados & Asociados S.L.P, Seidor, Franjus Security, Vithas, Autos Lido, Special Needs, Román y Martos, Cervezas Victoria, Les Roches Marbella y Vozplus.

A WORM, which is capable of causing meningitis in humans, has been found for the first time in Mallorca.

It is only the second time the Angiostronggylus cantonensis has been detected in the whole of Europe. The parasite can cause neurological conditions in animals and humans, including eosinophilic meningitis. Two specimens were found in hedgehogs from different parts of the island last year. They both arrived at the Centre for Wildlife Recovery of the Balearic Islands Wildlife Recovery Consortium (COFIB). Dr Claudia Paredes, from a team of researchers at the University of the Balearic

Islands, warned that the worms could spread to the human population. Medicine.net says: “People become infected with this parasite by ingesting its larvae in raw, or insufficiently cooked snails, slugs, freshwater prawns, frogs, or fish. “Infection may also occur by consumption of fresh produce, such as contaminated lettuce. “Symptoms include headache, neck pain, visual disturbances, and hyperesthesias. “Most cases of eosinophilic meningitis, through A. cantonensis, are self-limited and resolve without complications. “However, neurologic sequelae do develop in some cases, and deaths have been reported from the disease.”

When is your tax freedom day? By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

IF you ever had the feeling that you have spent half your working life just paying tax, you are not far wrong.

What with income tax, National Insurance, capitalgains tax, VAT, council tax and so on, a considerable amount of our income goes straight to the taxman, each year. Even if you are retired, you are still faced with tax on savings, investments and pensions. Having paid so many taxes all your life, you will not want to pay more than necessary, and that’s why tax planning plays such an important part in protecting your wealth. Defining the tax burden of typical workers in the EU For the last ten years, the Institut Economique Molinari has measured taxes payable across the 28 EU member states. While it focuses on employees, and the tax and social security they pay, it

illustrates the general tax burden of each country, and how they compare. The study calculates a “tax liberation day” for each country, the date on which an employee has earned enough to pay off all taxes for the year. It also identifies the average “real tax rate” for typical workers in each country (gross salary minus all tax liabilities). 2019’s report reveals the average tax freedom day across the EU was 12th June, but there was a disparity of over 14 weeks. The difference between the lowest and highest real tax rate was more than double. How did Spain fare? Spain’s tax freedom day fell on 8th June, placing it ninth in the rankings. Spanish employees worked for 159 days of the year, just to pay their tax bill. While this is the same as the last three years, it is a long way off the 19th May date, enjoyed back in 2011. The average gross salary in Spain is €34,469, but, after the real tax rate of 43.31%, workers are only left with €19,541 to spend on themselves. The country with the latest tax freedom day this year is, once again, France, with 19th July. Cyprus continues to have the earliest day, on 8th April.

What about the UK? According to the study, the UK’s tax freedom day again comes fourth, landing on 8th May, with a real tax rate of 34.94%. However, many think-tanks undertake their own research to calculate their country’s tax freedom day, using different methodologies. While the Institut Economique Molinari looks at income tax, social security contributions and VAT, the UK’s Adam

Smith Institute (ASI) measures the entire tax take, including taxes that do not come directly out of the earner’s pocket. This approach places the UK’s 2019 date three weeks later, on 30th May, the latest date since comparable records began, in 1995. What does this mean for taxpayers? The Institut’s overall outlook is that ageing populations are putting pressure on pension

and healthcare spending for governments. This does not bode well for future tax cuts; as the population ages and fewer people are employed, taxpayers are required to plug the gap. With under half of the EU’s citizens in the labour force, the report concludes that “economic growth remains European workers’ best hope against tax increases, in the near term”. These remain taxing times for taxpayers, including retirees. In many cases, there are steps you can take to lighten your tax burden, especially on capital investments and pensions. While we all have to pay our share of taxes, cross-border taxation is highly complex; do not risk getting it wrong, or paying more than necessary. Inside The Vatican

Filmed over a historic year, new series Inside The Vatican gives viewers unprecedented access to the inner workings of one of the most important places in the Christian world. From Pope Francis and some of his highest ranking officials to the choristers of the Sistine Chapel and the papal gardener, the series gives a unique insight into the lives of those who live and work in this independent City State. Filmed during Pope Francis’ fifth year in office, the series also charts a time of change as he introduces reforms, shakes up the clerical establishment and deals with the fallout of a sex abuse scandal that erupts just as the Pope embarks on a historic visit to Ireland. The first episode follows the build up to Easter, the most sacred celebration in the Church calendar. As Easter draws near, the Sanpietrini - skilled craftsmen responsible for the upkeep of St Peter’s Basilica - are hard at work. For them this is not a routine job, but a tradition that has been passed down from the original craftsmen who built St Peter’s, the most important Church in the Catholic world. The Vatican gardeners also have a key role to play, preparing the olive branches to decorate St Peter’s Square and palm leaves to adorn the columns of the Basilica. Meanwhile the Vatican Police Force makes stringent security checks in anticipation of the arrival of tens of thousands of pilgrims. Ever since the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II in 1981, security has been stepped up, and because this Pope prizes his spontaneity he presents a challenge for his security team. Also preparing for Easter is Mark Spyropoulos, the first Englishman to sing in the Sistine Chapel Choir since the reformation. Mark has a very special responsibility: on Easter Saturday he must stand up in St Peter’s and sing solo for Pope Francis and a worldwide television audience of many millions. After the festivities of Palm Sunday, the early part of the Easter week is given over to quiet contemplation inside the Vatican. This is when Pope Francis follows a very personal Easter ritual. He visits inmates of the Regina Coeli Prison to wash their feet. This Easter one of the chosen 12 is a Muslim prisoner, Ali. The Vatican is also one of the oldest diplomatic institutions in the world. We meet Archbishop Paul Gallagher. Originally from Liverpool, he is the head of the Vatican’s equivalent of the Foreign Office. We go with him as he leaves his private apartment inside the Apostolic Palace to attend the Pope’s annual State Of The World address in the Sistine Chapel. Pope Francis, the Vatican’s first Latin American pontiff, believes the Church should be close to the people. For this reason he prefers to live in a modest apartment in the Casa Santa Marta rather than the grand rooms of the Apostolic Palace where Pope’s have lived for centuries. We follow Pope Francis as he meets some of the pilgrims during one of his general audiences which take place every Wednesday. We also get inside the Department of Communications and meet the new media team, an influential tool of the Vatican. With millions of followers, Pope Francis’ Twitter and Instagram accounts and Facebook page are a new way for the Church to reach people who would otherwise not be reached. Not all his followers are Catholics. One of them wrote to him: “Why am I following you? I don’t even believe in God.”

The $50 Million Art Swindle

Save Money: Good Health

The Jonathan Ross Show

Jonathan is joined by iconic star of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings Sean Bean, Our Girl and Corrie legend Michelle Keegan and Edinburgh award-winning comedian Rose Matafeo. Plus, legendary lead singer of Oasis and now solo star Liam Gallagher will be chatting and performing in the studio.

Acclaimed director Vanessa Engle tracks down the charlatan art dealer Michel Cohen - who swindled over $50 million from the art establishment before going on the run - 16 years after his escape from prison. Michel Cohen, a high school drop-out from a poor background, was a self-invented man who became a rich and successful art dealer, with homes in Malibu and New York. Throughout the 1990s he sold paintings by artists such as Picasso, Monet and Chagall to America’s wealthiest elite. Cohen lived the high life until he began trading recklessly in the stock market and ran up considerable debts. In an attempt to recoup his losses, he swindled private collectors, auction houses and other art dealers out of more than $50 million. When his swindles were discovered he went on the run with his wife and two small children, and in 2003 he was found by Interpol in Brazil and was imprisoned in Rio de Janeiro. Seven months later, whilst awaiting extradition to America, he escaped from prison and vanished off the face of the earth. Filmmaker Vanessa Engle manages to locate Michel and he shares his extraordinary story of greed, motive and morality. The $50 Million Art Swindle (1 x 90) is a Top Hat Production. It was commissioned for BBC Arts and BBC Two by Mark Bell. Executive producer is Darren Kemp. Vanessa Engle is the Producer and Director.

In the first episode of this new series the Dr Marrtin Ellingham’s (Martin Clunes) career is hanging in the balance. His future as a GP is under scrutiny from the General Medical Council following complaints about his irascible approach to patients, and his blood phobia. A representative from the GMC, Rebecca Hedden (Hermione Gulliford) has come to assess both Martin and his surgery. The Doc thinks the assessment is a complete waste of time and is quick to make his views clear to Dr Hedden. Meanwhile his wife Louisa (Caroline Catz) is pursuing a new career as a child counsellor. She is also concerned that their son James Henry is becoming too much like his father, and considers whether they should try for a little brother or sister. But is now the right time with her career change and Martin under review? Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) is helping out at the pub, the Crab and Lobster, while Al (Joe Absolom) tries to find extra staff. Morwenna feels taken for granted, and in an attempt to show her his appreciation, Al accidentally proposes to her, setting the village buzzing with their wedding plans. Mrs Tishell (Selina Cadell) decides to go on a date with Donald (Simon Chandler), whom she met at Book Club. But their trip to a lighthouse turns to disaster when Mrs Tishell suffers a terrible accident. The Doc has to commission a fishing boat, with PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez), to sail out to the lighthouse to treat her. Dr Hedden insists on joining them to monitor the Doc at work, but faces a life threatening situation herself. The episode is written by Jack Lothian, the producer is Philippa Braithwaite, the director is Nigel Cole and the executive producer is Mark Crowdy.

Garden Rescue

BBC1, 15.45

Charlie Dimmock and the Rich brothers are in Bicester, in Oxfordshire, answering a Garden Rescue emergency from parents Sarah and Adam. Like all overstretched mums, Sarah is after a space where she can relax and unwind after a full-on day juggling two young children - but she’s also aware that the garden needs to work as a play space for the kids too. It’s a difficult balancing act for Charlie Dimmock and the Rich brothers’ to pull off. Having a budget of only £2,500 makes the job even more difficult for the designers, but they can spot a family in desperate need of a garden make over from a mile off, so head up to Bicester to pitch their rival solutions for the family. Not for the first time they take very different approaches. Charlie’s garden is fully fitted out with distracting entertainment for the children, from tunnels to sand pits and mud gardens, while the Rich brothers have given over more of the garden to mum and dad, with a relaxing oasis full of grasses, and benches to sit and drink a glass of wine. Who will win the right to transform Sarah and Andy’s blank square plot into their dream garden? And more importantly, can the three gardeners, with the help of their regular landscape team, successfully deliver the garden the whole family truly needs to both play and relax in?

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 21.00

EastEnders stalwart Adam Woodyatt, Geordie Shore’s Vicky Pattison, former boxing promoter Kellie Maloney, weather presenter Tomasz Schafernaker and DJ and lawyer Judge Jules take part, as the competition hosted by John Torode and Gregg Wallace continues. Armed with just a pestle and mortar, the celebs’ first task is to create a curry of their own design using a larder of fresh spices, chilies and herbs and a range of meat, fish and vegetables. They must then spend time in a professional restaurant kitchen, cooking for paying customers in a busy lunchtime service.

Inside Prison: Britain Behind Bars “I took my friend hostage at knifepoint, and I said to her when I went in there, ‘Look, I love you, I’m sorry about this, I’m very sorry but go with it.’ And she was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And then I pulled out the blade.” - Colette, serving 18 months at HMP Downview for assault This brand new four-part documentary series for ITV goes inside the walls of six prisons to offer a sharp insight into the harsh realities of life behind bars today for thousands of inmates and staff. With unprecedented access to prisons spanning the men’s and women’s estates, along with Britain’s largest prison officer training college, this series offers a 360 degree, unflinching look at life behind bars - seen through the eyes of the men and women on the frontline of Britain’s jails - the prison officers – as well as the prisoners they deal with on a day to day basis. Cameras go into prisons across the country - women’s prison HMP Downview, category B prisons HMP Bullingdon and HMP Isle of Wight, young offender institutions HMP Deerbolt and HMP Portland, category C prison HMP Erlestoke and the officer training facility at Newbold Revel. Through the experiences of both trainee and veteran prison officers, support staff and the prisoners themselves, the series provides an all-access exploration of what life on the inside is like for everyone in jail. At a time when the Prime Minister has promised a £2.5 billion investment in more prison places, this series examines the challenges presented to staff by escalating levels of violence across UK jails, and explores how officers drawn from a broad range of backgrounds, ages and experiences build and maintain relationships with prisoners from young offenders to vulnerable women. Alongside the often surprising and sometimes shocking aspects of life behind bars, the series reveals how prison officers now joining the service will be involved in spearheading rehabilitation schemes aimed at helping to turn prisoners’ lives around to stop them reoffending - and ending up behind bars once again.

‘Comedy’ pair missed plane, but chased it down runway! A FATHER and son were arrested by armed police after breaking an airport’s emergency-exit door, to catch a flight they missed while drinking at a bar.

Antonino Loi, 65, and 40-yearold son, Tony, were held at gunpoint for chasing a plane bound for Stansted down the runway at Sardinia’s Cagliari airport on Tuesday. They have been fined £2,000 for the damage caused when forcing the door open, and setting off an alarm, reports the Sun. Tony, who lives in London, plans to challenge the fine, branding the situation “ridiculous and stupid”. He said: ‘We usually board at a gate on the first floor, so that’s where we were sitting. But they boarded from below. They said they called us, but neither of us heard anything on the tannoy. My dad saw an easyJet plane outside, and then saw that boarding was shut. “I ran downstairs towards the plane, and thought the stairs to the plane were still there, so I exited a door that set an alarm off.” He insisted that he and

his dad weren’t “drunk or criminals”, but just wanted to catch the plane, when they saw police chasing them. “To be honest, I actually thought the police officer was going to radio the plane and tell them to make an exception and let us on,” said Tony. “But it was the opposite!” Following the fiasco, the pair were taken to a small room for an hour, and then told they would be fined. Airport police officer Mimmo Bari said the pair looked like a “comedy scene”, as they wheeled their suitcases along the tarmac. But if the incident had taken place in a stricter country, “they ran the risk of being shot”. An easyJet statement read: “We can confirm that two passengers were not allowed to travel on flight EZY3204, from Cagliari to London Stansted, having arrived late to the gate. “They were subsequently arrested by the police, as a result of behaving disruptively. The safety and well-being of passengers, crew and ground staff is always our priority. “While such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously, and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour.”

What’s in your number plate? BRITAIN’S Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), insists that there’s nothing wrong with “BJ69” on your registration plate.

This is fine, apparently, but would you drive a car with these figures and letters on your vehicle? Maybe not, but some people are driving around with that combination, and the DVLA has no plans to change it. The matter came to a head after a customer came forward with a complaint about being offered a van with that licence plate. He rejected it, on behalf of van rental company Vanarama, saying it was “too rude”. And the company’s bosses have now contacted the DVLA to raise the issue that BJ and 69 have sexual connotations, and were “a bit much” for some customers. A DVLA spokesman said: “The vast majority of registration numbers are made available for general issue and for sale,

and we consider the series in question to be suitable for release.” It is unusual, though, given the number of licence plates banned by the DVLA for being sexual, discriminatory, or threatening. For this year’s output, some of the banned plates included BE19 END, BU19 GER, DO19 POO, and OR19 SMS, so how does vehicle licencing work? Each car in the UK is given a unique number plate, written with two letters, two numbers and then another three letters. The first two letters indicate where a car was registered, so BJ indicates Birmingham. New licence plates are

released on 1st September and 1st March every year. In March, the numbers correspond to the number of the year, so this year, they were along the lines of XX19 XXX. In September, the numbers released add 50 to the original one, so this year, all new cars registered from September will have the number 69. Next year, cars will be given the numbers 20 or 70. But here are some of this year’s that didn’t make the cut: B19, NOB P19, FKR FA19, END MU19, GER GA19, NJA P19, POL FR19, BOY B19, DCK F19, GOT. Plates that end with SEX, BUM or ASS are automatically excluded.

Jailed for 271 years, but rapist has weekends off!

A GYMNASTICS teacher from Malaga, sentenced to 271 years in prison for 13 rapes and 11 sexual-assault attempts on women, has had the conditions of

his prison term relaxed. Juan Carlos GR, 46, was imprisoned in 2005 for crimes committed between 1997 and 2002. Now, though, a Granada judge has granted

the inmate leave from the Albolote prison at weekends. Educators and psychologists there have been opposed to all the permits which have been granted. They have even written reports and suggestions, in the hope of preventing the inmate from enjoying time away from his cell. When released, Carlos will be given a restraining order, preventing him from being within 2,000 yards of his victims for another 15 years. Yet he has another request, to fulfil what remains of his prison sentence in Albolote. But board members of Penitentiary Institutions have proposed that he be sent to jail in Algeciras or Malaga.

Young son’s credit-card spending shocks mother Death-stab victim Gary Amer

Pensioner stabbed plumber 30 times, and battered him

A PENSIONER is facing years behind bars for hacking a plumber to death, after claiming he took a threehour lunch break when he should have been fixing his boiler. William Treadwell, 68, stabbed Gary Amer 30 times during a frenzied attack at his home in Walworth, southeast London. He then dialled 999 to confess to police from his local pub. Prosecutor Timothy Cray QC said Treadwell battered the 63-year-old tradesman over the head with a pan from behind, before knifing him as he lay helpless on the ground. Of the assault, on 17th August last year, the prosecutor said: “It consisted of something like 30 stab wounds, including seven into the heart, and two kitchen knives being left in the body.” Treadwell, initially charged with murder at Southwark Crown Court, admitted manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. He is set to be sentenced on 30th September.

A SINGLE mother was devastated to learn that her eight-yearold son had used her credit card to spend £3,120 on computer games. Leon Berriedale-Johnson used his mother Martine’s card to buy add-ons for XBox games, such as Minecraft and Roblox. Over a three-week period, he spent a total of £3,120 on extras as he played with three friends. Martine, 40, from Brighton, learned about his spree when she received her credit-card statement through the post. Now, she fears she will be unable to feed Leon and his brother Eddie. “I’d put in my card details once, as a

one-off treat for him to buy a £4.99 add-on. “But I had no idea my details had been saved on the system, and that Leon was still using the card to buy more online.” On one day in August, Leon made 19 purchases coming to a staggering £978.81 total. Two days later, he made seven more purchases,

including one for £199.99. His mother said: “When I saw my credit card bill, I went crazy. I told him I was selling his Xbox.” She usually spends around £30 a month on her credit card, paying for takeaways and Amazon items. “I’m a single mum and I already struggle to put food on the table,” she said. “But

I’m always careful with my finances. I just don’t know how I’m going to pay this bill.” She had to tell her two boys: “Christmas is cancelled and you’re not getting any toys because Leon’s spending has taken all the money.” Martine said that Leon understood that he was buying something, but he didn’t understand the financial consequences. Martine says the boy wasn’t asked to enter the card’s security number each time he made an online purchase. She contacted Microsoft, who told her they had a 14day window for refunds. But because Leon made most of the purchases about a month ago, she cannot retrieve most of her money.

A trio of beauties!

What a handsome lad!

MEET Max. He was called Titan before, but he doesn’t suit that name because he’s a big, soft boy. A typical Labrador, he is full of fun and energy. Max is waiting for his forever home, and he is a perfect, family dog. If you would like to meet him, please contact Elaine on 678 015 653.

THESE gorgeous girls are looking for special homes. They are about 3-4 months old, which is an ideal age for anyone who doesn’t want to adopt a very young kitten. They have all had their first injections. Adopting little babies isn’t for everybody, for many different reasons. Cats become more independent, the older they get, and those which are more mature may be more suitable for those people who lead very busy lives. Adoption We have several other gorgeous kittens available for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside

for them to frolic to their hearts’ content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, if you would like to enquire about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs.

*All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Clothes required We are appealing, please, for good quality ladies’ tops and dresses. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. Shop volunteers We need people who would like to work in our charity shop. K9 Animal News THIS isn’t something we like to say, but there are many dogs in K9 who get overlooked. Whether they are too shy, too nervous, too old or too big, they never get the love and attention that some of our more playful, younger dogs receive.

This leaves them living longer and longer in a kennel, and not getting the love and happy life that they really deserve. Back in November 2017, this particular boy was found by the police in San Miguel, near to K9. He was given the name Raven. He was not in good condition, and was skin and bone. For his height, this was not a good state for him to be in. We reckoned he was about two years of age at the time, which would make him about four now. K9 took him in and started to build him up. He slowly gained weight, and is now in great condition. Raven is a very unique and special boy. For those of you who are familiar with him, or have walked him, you will know just how playful he can be, and he would absolutely love a play-mate. He has a brilliant

20th - 26th September 2019

Give Raven a chance!

personality, and you cannot help but fall in love with this extremely handsome boy. When out walking, Raven can have very playful moments, and, for those not experienced with dogs, this can put them off him. This makes us sad because he is just misunderstood, and really deserves a second chance in a loving home. Raven currently lives on his own in the kennel, but has been socialised with other playful female dogs who he had so much fun with. He has a lot of energy, and needs somewhere to use it up, so this is ideal for him. He loves to run around and have fun, and is at his happiest when he is playing. Raven is a favourite among most of the K9 volunteers who work there most days of the week, and he sometimes

like to play a game with us. We have a big space up at the top of our kennels which our dogs use daily, and get to run around for a little while. Raven loves this space so much that when we call him to come down, he comes down half way, waits for us to open the gate, and then runs back up to the top again! This can go on for a while sometimes, but, most of the time, he comes down, and, if given the opportunity, will come in for a big cuddle. The photograph here doesn’t do Raven justice. When you see him in real life, he is a stunning, large dog. He is brindle coloured, with a big heart. Can you offer Raven a second chance? Have you got a playful dog that is looking for someone to play with? Raven would be the perfect addition to your family. Please do not overlook him, and come up and meet him. If you are interested in getting to know Raven, and welcoming him into your home, please call at K9, any day, between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com

Lurking in the lashes!

By Val Sainsbury THE eyelash mite, known as Demodex folliculitis or Demodex mite, is a parasite that can be found in facial-hair follicles, and is altogether too common. It’s found on millions of different people, in the nose, on the cheeks, and in the eyelash area, the latter being the most usual. Even though you might not know it, it’s possible that you have some! Demodex mites are a unique genus that inhabits the skin, or, more specifically, the oil glands and hair follicles. There are dozens of known species, and it’s likely that they use a variety of different mammals as hosts, including, but not limited to, canines and humans. These mites survive by consuming bacteria on the skin. They mate and lay eggs, but, thankfully, their overall life cycle is limited.

Eyelash mites live such short lives that their bodies are not even equipped with a proper process, or even organ, to aid in the elimination of waste products. They usually die within two weeks of hatching. Generally speaking, eyelash mites and their hosts tend

to live together peacefully, without any irritation at all. This greatly contributes to the difficulty in discovering them. Even so, when the number of eyelash mites grows, an infestation might begin, after which multiple unwanted and entirely-unpleasant side effects might commence for

the host. Warning signs While not much is known for certain about eyelash mites, it’s believed that they are the cause of rosacea flare-ups, and even fungal skin infections like ringworm. Many skin issues are believed to occur when an excess of mites exists in the skin, laying too many eggs and leaving behind corpses. This clogs pores, hindering the skin’s ability to self-clean. While not all of the following symptoms guarantee that a Demodex mite infestation is going on, they can still be telling signs: *Hair loss *Itching or burning sensations *Clogged pores, such as acne or blackheads *A rash-like appearance to the skin *Flushing or swelling skin Eliminating eyelash mites Fortunately, there are many, natural, home remedies for curing an Demodex mite infestation. Many of them are backed by research, and are very easy to administer. *Baby shampoo (for the eyes) Washing your eyes with baby shampoo, carefully diluted with an equal amount of water, twice per day, helps to eliminate eyelash mites. Try using a natural shampoo

suitable for sensitive skin, in order to avoid skin irritation issues. *Tea tree oil (NOT on the eyes) Tea tree oil is one of the most effective natural remedies to battle Demodex mites, but it’s important to not place it near the eyes, because it can cause serious irritation. Apply tea tree oil to other parts of the body or face, thought to be infected. The survival time of the mites is less than 15 minutes, after pure tea tree oil is applied. You can try adding the oil to a bottle of shampoo or body wash, and using it as you normally would. Prevention The best way to manage eyelash mites is to avoid getting them in the first place. *Wash your face twice a day, morning and night, and cleanse the eye area gently, with water only *Never share make-up, especially mascara. Wear non-oily make-up and cosmetics only *Use eyelash wipes daily, if you wear make-up, or if you have excess debris or oil in the area. If your skin is looking irritated and feeling itchy, try cleansing your lashes, and implementing prevention methods for the future.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE visited Albacete last Sunday morning, in search of an away win, which they achieved with an overwhelming victory at the Carlos Belmonte stadium.

Yet Albacete were a real disaster, from start to finish, and if CDT’s strikers had taken advantage of their chances, the final score could quite easily have been 8-0! The match began in the best possible way for Tenerife, who opened the scoring after only 26 seconds, thanks to good play from Malbasic down the right. His perfect cross found Bermejo at the back post for a simple tap-in, past keeper Nadal, in the first minute! Worse was to follow for the home team, as Tenerife found the way to hurt them, by exposing their defence down the left wing. Albacete did respond, with a Capezzi long shot at goal, which Ortolá saved acrobatically to halt any danger. Tenerife continued to put on the pressure, and won a corner, taken by Borja Lasso. He put across an out-swinger, which was met with a spectacular volley by Slovakian defender Robert Mazan on the edge of the 18-yard area, to put Tenerife 2-0 up after just 13 minutes. Mazan’s strike not only silenced the Carlos Belmonte home fans, but the Albacete players also seemed deflated because

Tenerife could have doubled goal spree Albacete Balompié 0

they hardly troubled the Tenerife keeper for the rest of the half. Luis Perez and Mazan could

Cricket

England star Stokes hits his family critics for six ENGLAND batting hero Ben Stokes has released a statement concerning a newspaper report into the private life of his family, going back more than three decades! It was claimed that two of his mother’s other children, from a previous relationship, were murdered by their father, who then committed suicide, prior to the cricketer’s birth. In a lengthy Twitter statement, all-rounder Stokes referred to the “low and despicable” behaviour, calling the article “immoral, heartless and contemptuous”. He wrote: “Today, the Sun has seen fit to publish extremely painful, sensitive and personal details, concerning events in the private lives of my family, going back more than 31 years. “I cannot conceive of anything

45 CW

more immoral, heartless or contemptuous towards the feelings and circumstances of my family. “For more than three decades, my family has worked hard to deal with the private trauma, inevitably associated with these events, and has taken great care to keep private what were deeply personal and traumatic events. “On Saturday, the Sun sent a ‘reporter’ to my parents’ home in New Zealand to question them, out of the blue, on this incredibly-upsetting topic. “If that weren’t bad enough, the Sun think it is acceptable to sensationalise our personal tragedy for their front page. “This is the lowest form of journalism, totally out of order, and the article also contains serious inaccuracies, which has compounded the damage caused.”

CD Tenerife 4

easily have added two more goals before half-time, but they both missed easy chances in front of goal.

And a 4-0 lead then would have been a fair reflection on the game. Albacete had the first chance at the start of the second half, with a strong Manaj header, but Ortolá was up to the challenge and saved well. Although home team coach Ramis made changes at half-time, it seemed to get worse for them as Miérez and Malbasic had clear-cut chances. But they were rescued from an embarrassing scoreline by Nadal. Tenerife finished off the game in the 73rd minute,

after another Malbasic cross was parried by Nadal, into the path of Mierez, whose shot was deflected in by Albacete defender Kecojevic for an own-goal. And this three-goal deficit proved to be the last straw for home fans, who started to leave the stadium early, disgusted with their team’s performance. To be fair, the only thing they missed was another Tenerife strike, Dani Gómez obliging in the 89th minute to make it 4-0, for their first away win of the season. And, along with three valuable points, Tenerife were elevated to 10th in the table. Although this was hailed as Albacete’s worst performance in 20 years, coach Garai’s men should be happy with their performance, taking home a rewarding victory. They will have been gearing up for two tough matches, against teams above them in the league, away to Elche last night (Thursday), and then home against Fuenlabrada on Sunday evening. But if they can continue to play positively and convert their chances in front of goal, who’s to say they can’t come away with good results?

Expat Suzzan signs off with her winning birdie A NORWEGIAN expat, living in Marbella, helped Europe beat the US in golf’s Solheim Cup last weekend… then announcing her retirement from the sport.

Suzzan Pettersen had been away from the sport on maternity leave for two years, and many doubted that she should even have be selected, having played in just two events before the competition. But the 38-year-old came back with a bang, keeping her nerve to hole a birdie putt on the 18th to defeat Marina Alex and win the

prized women’s trophy for Europe. An elated Suzzan, after securing the victory, said: “I think this is a perfect closure, a nice ‘end’ for my professional career. It doesn’t get any better. Life’s changed so much for me over the last year.” the 38-year-old said. “My son Herman is obviously

the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me. But now I know what it feels like to win as a mom. I’m going to leave it like that.” She retires on the back of an esteemed career, in which she won 15 times on the LPGA Tour, including two Majors, the 2007 Women’s PGA Championship and the 2013 Evian Championship.

Sorrowful week, and few teams played on NOT many games took place on Week 12, because a lot of matches were cancelled following last week’s tragedy on Golf del Sur.

The funeral took place on Friday, and, understandably, a lot of people wanted to show their respect. Some games still went ahead, obviously, and in Division 1, The Waterfall, who are on a bit of a rebuilding mission, managed to pinch a game,

and avoid a whitewash from visiting Ourplace Playboys, who won 7-1. The Pub were away to Sandys Bandits, and, although they made work hard of it, they won 6-2. Loch Inn Bullseyes hosted Mad Hatters, and the home team

proved their worth, battling to win the 701 game, which earned them a 4-4 draw. In Division 2, Sundowners played well, but, unfortunately for them, Ourplace Breakaways just outgunned them, emerging 5-3 winners. Scooters

Spain win FIBA World Cup SPAIN secured a comfortable 95-75 win against Argentina to win the FIBA World Cup, in the Final of the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Beijing, China, last Sunday.

They scored 14 of the game’s first 16 points, and though Argentina cut into the lead repeatedly, the Spanish did away with every Argentine charge to keep their cushion. For the first time in the World Cup, Argentina’s veteran big man, Luis Scola, was held scoreless for an entire half, which had a huge say in denying his team’s challenge for a second World Cup trophy. It was a tremendous win for Spain, who took Argentina apart with their 20-point win.

& Chevys B picked a most welcome win, seeing off the challenge from visiting Naughty Nautas, and also winning 5-3. Finally, the battle at the top, and Club Activo, who visited Palms Sports Bar, won 7-1, to gain most of the points.

They had been eliminated from gold-medal contention at the last four Olympics by the US, losing two finals, but benefited from the Americans’ early exit last week. The US, who were seventh, recorded their worst result

ever in a major international tournament, after defeats by France and Serbia. Spain pressured relentlessly, intensifying their aggressiveness on both ends of the court as the game progressed, to gain their reward.
