Hospitals and some cafes could carry on operating

Continued from Front

Trams in the capital city, Santa Cruz, ground to a halt, shops were forced to close, as well as cafes and restaurants in general, and around 70 people had to be rescued from lifts by fire crews after the power went down. But the two airports were, reportedly, unaffected, as were hospitals, several hotels cafes and petrol stations, once their generators kicked in. Initial reports pointed to an incident in Candelaria, but the power cut was actually traced to the sub-station. However, it was still daylight until around 7.45pm, and several people headed for beaches during the afternoon. Matthew Ward, 50, and his wife Nicola, 47, from Goole, Yorkshire, said they hadn’t eaten since 9am on the second day of their week-long break, when the power failed. Matthew told the Mirror Online: “We went for a walk this morning to Los Cristianos for breakfast, and, as we walked back, we nipped into a shop. “But the shopkeeper said she couldn’t serve us as there was no power, and then, as we continued walking back, a bloke was saying the power was out for three kilometres. “When we got back to the hotel, the power was off and only cold food was being served. But most of it had gone. Now, when you look out to where the bars are, everyone’s on the beach. But it’s deadly quiet. In fact, mains electricity was being restored, region by region, to the island from late afternoon. But scores of areas were still without any power as the sun began to

set. A receptionist at the threestar Hotel Catalonia Oro Negro, in Playa de Las Americas, said they were functioning as normal, with generators. Several restaurants were also able to carry on, thanks to generators, especially those attached to petrol stations. They all use them, when necessary, to keep the pumps active. It worked well for the Pcan station at Las Chafiras, when word spread, rapidly, that its Together cafeteria was operating normally. Dozens of people descended on the premises as darkness began to fall, and, by 9pm, the packed café had run out of food and had to close. A Spanish bar owner in Los Cristianos said: “A lot of bars and restaurants in the area are without electricity and will have closed.” Brit Debbie Moyse, manager of the Cozy Cafe in Las Americas, added: “I reckon I’m going to lose around 10,000 euros in food alone. I’ve got four large standup freezers and seven catering fridges in the kitchen, and everything in there will have to be thrown away. The owner has been here for 20 years and it’s the first time he’s heard of a blackout on this scale. Santa Cruz Mayor Patricia Hernández said on Twitter that Endesa would take six hours to repair the outage, but the electricity supplier declined to comment. Yet Spanish power-grid operator Red Electrica said it had been analysing the causes, and had starting to re-establish services in some areas. Meanwhile, the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight

against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, opened an investigation file last Monday to determine the blackout cause, which left more than 450,000 customers without supply, which is equivalent to affecting about one million people. Eduardo Prieto, Red Eléctrica de España (REE) Director of Operations in the Canaries, pointed to a fortuitous failure of the voltage transformer of the Granadilla de Abona sub-station as a possible blackout source. Canarian President Ángel Víctor Torres said the Ministry of Ecological Transition technicians were analysing the place where the power cut occurred. He added that the Government investigation must be “quick” to determine what the blackout causes were, and why it affected an entire island. Torres recalled that there were economic sanctions for these types of incidents, ranging from €600,000 to €60m euros, depending on the damages incurred. “Those responsible will have to come to light soon, and, when that happens, they will have to assume the damages that have been caused,” he added.

Blackout compensation THE Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) is reminding those affected by the blackout that they can claim compensation for damages, suffered as a result.

It has given a series of recommendations for those who want to file a claim. But, in accordance with the quality commitments of the electricity companies, only homes in urban centres will be entitled to discounts if their interruption exceeded five hours. The pay-out would be around €21 for homes in urban areas, deducted automatically from home invoices in the first quarter of 2020. But the OCU considers this compensation clearly insufficient, since it does not cover the actual damages suffered by users. The OCU believes the blackout

may have caused damage to electrical appliances, or spoiled food etc, or, perhaps, if someone were making an online purchase at the time of the power cut, or booking a trip. It adds: “It is recommended that you check your emails, as well as your bank account, to confirm if the transaction was completed.” Those affected are encouraged to claim for the damages caused by the cut in the supply, since it was not a planned interruption. The OCU also advises that those affected collect all the tickets or bills of their appliances, as well as documents, which can prove the damage or loss, such as the receipts for food that was in the freezer or refrigerator. It also recommends taking photographs and videos to prove the damage and its effects, to enable a claim for adequate compensation.

To activate a claim: *Submit a written claim directly to the customer service department of the company responsible for the supply. OCU provides on its website a claim form https:// www.ocu.org/reclamar If no response is received from the company within a month, or if it is not satisfactory, you can escalate, to the regional office. *The claimant can also make a claim to his/her nearest Consumer Information Office. Those affected are advised to check their home insurance policy, because it sometimes covers the loss of food in the event of a power failure or power outage. *Finally, OCU requires that those responsible are sanctioned, according to the regulations. In this regard, the Canarian Government has already initiated a file to investigate what happened, and to place responsibilities.

Sacked Thomas Cook girl’s warming speech wins on-board praise PASSENGERS on a Thomas Cook repatriation flight, from Tenerife to Stansted, were almost brought to tears by a sacked member of staff, who made a raw and emotional speech over the tannoy.

The jobless woman, who had worked with the cabin crew, told passengers: “Even though we have been abandoned by our company, we will not abandon you, our loyal customers.” The mother-of-two, who said she’d heard about losing her job while on holiday in Turkey, stepped up to help get holiday-makers home, despite not knowing whether she would be paid. This particular flight, one of many repatriations to bring stranded customers home, was on its way to Essex last Friday, and she added: “I have given 13 years of my life to Thomas Cook. I met my husband here, and, on Monday, we both lost our jobs overnight, just like that, with two young children to support. ‘It’s an incredibly hard time for us. We are not able to provide you with a lot; just a cup of tea, coffee and a muffin. But we promise to get you home safe and sound, and see this through to the very end.” Grateful passengers, who applauded and praised her, also organised a whip-round for the devastated cabin crew, left jobless after the holiday firm’s collapse. Alex Hall, from Bromley, who had spent a week abroad with fiancée Emily Watson, said he had goose-bumps as he filmed the powerful speech, and that he was blown away by the professionalism of staff, who deserved recognition. “It was so raw and emotional,” said Alex. “You could cut the tension with a knife. During the whole flight, the staff were comforting each other. They were in bits, yet they remained so professional, even though you could see

how devastating it was for them.” So far, by Tuesday, what was dubbed “Operation Matterhorn” had repatriated all but 30,000 of the 150,000 Thomas Cook customers, via the UK Civil Aviation Authority, with more than 130 aircraft employed. Also, around 94% of people were flown back on the original day of their cancelled flight. On Wednesday, 44 flights were scheduled, and the former company’s plan was to complete its mission this Sunday, with around 900 planned flights. The biggest, peacetime repatriation, conducted mainly by sacked Thomas Cook staff, is accompanied by news that the former travel company’s auditor, EY, will be investigated over its role in signing off the last set of accounts for the travel firm, prior to its collapse, says the accounting regulator. The Financial Reporting Council will determine whether EY acted properly in scrutinising the 2018 numbers, and could censure the individual accountants, or even the financial services giant itself. Questions remain over how much the taxpayer will pick up in unpaid wages and redundancy payments to the 9,500, UK-based, Thomas Cook staff. Around 6,000 have been made redundant so far, with the remaining staff continuing to work for the business, helping officials in the insolvency process. It was also reported that the UK Government Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom, failed to meet with any Thomas Cook senior directors, prior to its collapse, when the company was seeking reassurances from ministers. The business was directed to the Department for Transport instead. It has also been revealed that some customers may have to wait up to two months to receive a refund on cancelled holidays.

Spanish Army shot themselves in foot! The Vara y Pulgar complements meat and bean dishes

Cheers! Spanish wines join the world-beaters THREE Spanish wines have been selected among the world’s best by a leading critic. Eric Asimov, of The New York Times, included Madrid Granito de Cadalso, Grancanario Fronton de Oro and Cadiz Vara y Pulgar in the top-20 wines for his under-$20 list. The Granito de Cadalso is made from grapes, grown on granite slopes to the west of Madrid, and is described as “lively and vibrant”. It can be picked up for just under €17 a bottle. The grapes that comprise the Grancanario Fronton de Oro are cultivated on high-terraced vineyards in the Canaries. And a bottle, which sells for just over €15, sits nicely alongside red meats like lamb. The Cadiz Vara y Pulgar is the most expensive of the Spanish wines on the list, coming in at just over €17. It originates in the Andalucian region of Cadiz, an area better known for its cherries than wines. It’s juicy but potent, and complements hearty meat or bean stews.

Spain funds smokers itching to kick habit MARIA Luisa Carcedo, Spain’s acting Health Minister, has announced that the Government, for the first time, will help smokers kick the habit by financing their use of one of the most effective, antismoking pharmaceuticals. Champix, as it is known on the high street, is now available on paid prescription only. But it will be free as the Health Minister attempts to break the smoking habits of Spain. Currently, it costs the Government millions of euros each year to treat patients with smoking-related diseases. Spain, where cigarettes still cost between 4-5 euros for a packet of 20, has one of the highest rates of people in Europe still smoking, while other countries, such as the UK, have seen a large decrease. In fact, UK Government taxes have priced smoking out of the market place for many, with cigarettes now on the

shelves at around £11 a packet. But Spain is adopting a new tactic, offering smokers the free treatment, Champix, which weans a smoker off the habit and has a proven track record, is a three-month treatment, and smokers take a tablet twice daily. Most of them usually set their “quit date” between 10 to 14 days of starting. But some smokers find themselves extinguishing cigarettes earlier than that, to the extent that they “don’t fancy a fag” because the pills relieve the craving and withdrawal symptoms. They soon detest the taste and smell, driving to them to quit the habit. The course of tablets lasts up to three months, even after smokers have had their last cigarette, ensuring that they don’t crave the habit. Pharmacies around Spain are preparing for an influx of orders, after the Government’s announcement. Tablet-takers are not recommended to smoke after their quit date, but if

THE Spanish Army is to investigate a group of soldiers, pictured drinking beers while armed, at a bar in the Barcelona municipality of Vilafranca del Penedès. Unfortunately for them, the photos, featuring their machine guns close at hand, quickly went viral.

The Army says the probe will determine whether the military members, returning from operations in northern France, have committed an offence by consuming alcohol, alongside their weapons. Drinking alcohol is prohibited among soldiers when they are on duty, or with weapons. But the picture clearly demonstrates that several groups of uniformed soldiers are clearly drinking bottles of beer, with their automatic weapons visible, on the ground next to them. The photo, which has shocked Vilafranca residents, prompted many comments on social media, including a tweet from Gabriel Rufián, the congressional spokesperson

they do, Champix can certainly reduce the enjoyment they feel from smoking cigarettes. And remember, Champix is not the same as nicotine-replacement therapy. It is suitable for people who are motivated to give up smoking, but have not yet been successful, and it is considered to be a “safe” medication for most subjects. But the following people should

Army sources say the company spent Friday night in Sant Climent Sescebes (Girona) and, after resuming their journey, stopped between 11.45am and 12.20pm on Saturday next to a supermarket in Vilafranca del Penedés. That was to enable the bus drivers to make a

According to the same sources, weapons would normally be left inside the buses during stops, in the custody of a guard. However, the head of the unit considered it safer for soldiers to have their weapons with them, because the buses were taking advantage of the stop to refuel. Army sources added that the weapons were not loaded, and there were no incidents with the general public.

You are unlikely to be able to give up smoking while taking Champix, unless you are motivated to do so, but it is not expected to affect the way other drugs or medication work. Stopping smoking with or without Champix may alter the way some medications work. Giving up smoking, with or without treatment, can cause various symptoms, including changes of mood, such as feeling depressed, irritable, frustrated or anxious. It can also cause sleeplessness and difficulty concentrating, decreased heart rate and increased appetite or weight gain. But the most common side-effect associated with this medication is nausea, while others include headaches, sleep difficulty and abnormal dreams.

Court seizes property, owned by Tenerife’s timeshare giant Brides and bridegrooms challenged to win a €40,000 wedding

Race on to secure dream wedding! AN amazing challenge, giving prospective couples a chance to win “the wedding of their dreams”, will take place on the Costa del Sol next year.

The lucky winner will bag a big day, worth €40,000, which includes a private villa, cars, photographs, flower arrangements, jewellery, hair and make-up, and, of course, the bride’s dress! It is planned for Malaga, on 16th February, and the Corre Por Tu Boda (Run For Your Wedding) event will feature 400 participants. Entrants must be over 18, and residents and foreigners with the correct documents are also welcome. Only one person in each couple can participate for

the grand prize, while there are two smaller prizes also on offer. To stand a chance of winning, runners must complete a 5km circuit, from El Palmeral in Malaga Port to Muelle Uno, in 30 minutes. Those who finish in under that time will then be entered into a raffle for the main prize. The event’s co-director, Ceci Correnggia, said: “From our wedding world, we wanted to celebrate the European sports capital of Malaga in 2020. We discussed how we could do it, and we decided on organising a fun race, in which you could win a complete wedding.” Registration, which opened on Tuesday (1st Oct), costs €40, and must be completed before 9th February 2020.

ARONA Court has embargoed the first property of South Tenerife’s main holiday timeshare company, Silverpoint Vacations, following complaints about the company’s irregular practices, involving unwitting tourists. Incredibly, the company has accumulated hundreds of convictions since the Supreme Court ruled in January 2017 that the buyers were not professional investors, but consumers. Adminstrators of Silverpoint Vacations also face trial for avoiding their payment obligations to the clients, who sued and won in the Supreme Court. The company has not only refused to pay, but has also been reluctant to inform the justices of its assets. The offer by Silverpoint Vacations went beyond the acquisition of the right to use and enjoy time-share apartments. Its products included a membership to a select group of clients, and an investment package, in different

weeks, seasons, residences and complexes, with the promise of lucrative rights of resale, which never materialised. According to clients’ accounts, when the time came to collect a return on their investment, the company informed them of a “hold-up” in the sale process. Instead, it offered them the possibility of acquiring new rights in higher-category accommodation and, therefore, greater benefit options. This supposed investment, and speculative eagerness of the buyers, persuaded the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz to reject, systematically, the clients’ demands against the company, until January 2017. That date was the turning point. The Supreme Court inflicted the first judicial blow to Silverpoint Vacations by recognising the status of a consumer, who joined the socalled Club Paradiso. From that moment, there was a cascade of resolutions in favour of customers, in total settlements of about nine million euros!

Enormous breakaway iceberg could pose big risk to shipping AN enormous iceberg, reckoned to be as big as Greater London, has broken off a glacier in Antarctica, and is believed to be about 1,636sq/km in size and roughly 2km deep, say reports.

€150m luxury hotel all set IKOS, the global hotel chain, is preparing to open a €150m luxury hotel in Estepona, creating 700 jobs for the Costa del Sol. And already, more than 2,200 people have applied to work in the company’s first Spanish hotel, which is scheduled to open next May. Ikos Andalusia will boast 400 rooms and seven restaurants, as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools. But the Greek business is looking to fill the vacancies with people who are keen to build a career in the hospitality sector. It also wants at least 50% of the 700 employees to be local to the area. Luis Herault, head of Ikos Iberia, which was founded in 2014 and has hotels on several Greek islands, said: “Our intention is to invest 700m euros in Spain and Portugal in the next four or five years, with similar resorts.”

Mystery body outside cemetery A NATIONAL Police spokesperson has confirmed that a body was found inside a parked car, near Gran Canaria’s San Gregorio cemetery in Telde, last Monday. Officers were sent to the location, as well as an ambulance, but the medical team could only confirm that the individual was not breathing. The body was discovered just after midday, and officers claim there was no sign of violence. But police are investigating the case, anyway, to determine exactly what happened. An autopsy will be carried out to confirm the cause of death, but no personal information has yet been disclosed.

Electric car shocks woman A 46-YEAR-OLD woman suffered a heart attack from the impact of an electric car, which crashed into her rental vehicle in Madrid last week. She was treated for several injuries, including one to her head, by the city’s SAMUR-Civil Protection emergency service team, who revived her at the scene, then rushed her to hospital. Spanish media reported that the accident occurred in an area with no traffic lights or pedestrian crossings, and the car’s windscreen was shattered by the impact. Madrid Municipal Police, in collaboration with the National Police, are investigating the cause of the incident.

Scooter man’s death gamble A MAN aged 61, who had no helmet on, and no lights on an electric scooter he was riding, died after colliding with a car at El Rebolledo, in the Alicante province last Monday night. The sit-on device, similar to a normal moped, was given to him by his son because the victim had heart problems. Yet this type of scooter should conform to the same regulations as other mopeds. The 78-year-old car driver, who was unharmed, tested negative for alcohol, after the 9pm accident last Monday, but the victim died instantly. The local council is introducing a bylaw to regulate the use of electric scooters, but these more powerful types will not be included because the DGT traffic department rules already cover them. It was the first fatal crash with this type of vehicle in the province.

It is the first major split on the Amery ice shelf since the early 1960s, when a segment measuring a huge 9,000sq/km broke away. The latest iceberg, named D28, will be tracked by experts as it could pose a risk to shipping. Professor Helen Fricker, from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, told BBC News: “I am excited to see this calving (splitting) event after all these years. “We knew it would happen eventually, but just to keep us all on our toes, it is not exactly where we expected it to be.” She added that the split was

not linked to climate change. D28 is far from the largest iceberg in the area, being dwarfed by A68, which broke off the Larsen C ice shelf in 2017 and is more than three times as big. The one-trillion-tonne

iceberg, measuring 5,800sq/ km, is four times the size of London. Ella Gilbert, a PhD Antarctic research student from London, previously filmed the formation on the very first science flight over it.

Spain No.1 on planet for overseas holidays SPAIN is the world’s second-from-top in foreign visitor numbers, the second in terms of tourism income volume… and the most competitive holiday destination on the planet, according to the United Nations’ World Tourism Organisation.

For numbers, Spain continues a trend it set around five years ago in coming second to France but above the US, with an average of 82.7 million visitors from abroad annually, which is nearly double its resident population. France is ahead with 89.4m and the US, despite its much larger land mass, is slightly behind on 79.6m. China, Italy, Turkey, México, Germany, Thailand and the UK make up the rest of the top 10. With 1.4bn people on earth going abroad for a break in the last full year, from 2017 to 2018, a clear, upward trend has been reported, with 5% more people taking holidays out of their resident country than in the 2016-2017 period. And Spain’s holiday-maker numbers have rocketed: at the start of the 2009 financial crisis, and at a time when the country was a far-from-competitive destination, compared with much cheaper tourism hotspots relatively close by, the country’s annual foreign visitors did not greatly exceed the population, coming in at

52m, compared with the 54.9m recorded by the US. Since then, numbers have soared by 30.7m, with a continual climb since 2015. And Spain’s tourism industry, compared with the rest of the world, has performed an about-turn. From being criticised a decade ago for failing to be competitive, it has officially become the most competitive in the world. This means value for money, rather than cheap. True, many other destinations are much cheaper, but do not offer the same level of quality or facilities. Spain is followed by France, Germany, Japan, the US, the UK, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland. In the first half of this year, up to and including June, a total of 48.06m foreign tourists had visited Spain, exceeding the resident population by around a million and showing growth of 2.7% on the same six-month period in 2018.

Despite their numbers having declined since the Brexit referendum, the UK is still the largest output country for holiday-makers in Spain. In July 2019 alone, nearly 2.2m Brits took a sunshine break in the country, ahead of Germany’s 1.24m and France’s 1.42m. The US earned the most money from tourism last year, ahead of Spain, but that adds up, given that Spain is a less-expensive destination, and its land mass is much smaller. Last year, the US earned $210bn, just over €196bn, while Spain was second top, with around $73bn (just over €67bn). But the difference between Spain and the rest of the top 10 countries is far less pronounced. China, at No.10, earned around €35bn and the UK, at No.5, just short of €50bn. France and Thailand come directly after Spain and before Britain, while Italy, Australia and Japan come between the UK and China.

Once-wealthy grandma just cannot cope with a new life… behind bars! THE BRITISH grandmother, jailed for eight years alongside her husband for trying to smuggle cocaine worth £1m into Europe on a luxury Caribbean cruise, has hit out at the “very hard” conditions in a Portuguese prison.

Three judges convicted retired chef Roger Clarke, 72, and his ex-secretary wife Sue, 71, of drug-trafficking after a one-day trial at Lisbon’s main criminal court. They were told they would serve their sentences in Portugal instead of being kicked out of the country and sent back to Britain to do their time, as a state prosecutor had requested. Last Thursday they were each jailed for eight years, when the husband expected at least 50% of that term. Now, however, having enjoyed luxurious cruises, Mrs Clarke has moaned about the conditions in jail, claiming she is being kept in an unheated cell with four other women. She said they were given just

one hot drink daily, and had to make do with water for the remaining hours. She also complained about having difficulty communicating with the guards. Mrs Clarke’s comments came in a letter sent to a friend of the family, and seen by the Daily Mail. She wrote: “It’s very hard here, especially with the language difference. I’m in a room with four other women, and only one speaks English. “It is very cold, and there is no heating at all. We only get one hot drink a day, with breakfast, then water with lunch and dinner.” She said they had no idea what was happening, until the police in Portugal searched their bags. The couple were arrested on board cruise liner Marco Polo. The Clarkes were arrested on board cruise liner Marco Polo on 4th December last year, after Portuguese police acted on a tip-off from Britain’s National Crime Agency. They discovered nine kilos of cocaine, hidden inside the lining of four suitcases which

Mr Clarke had been handed on the sunshine island of St Lucia. The former Kent-born chef told the court he had no idea the cases had drugs inside. Roger said he was taking them back to the UK for a friend called Lee, whom, he claimed, had promised to pay him £800, and bragged that he could sell them for a mammoth profit at Harrods. He said UK-based Jamaican businessman ‘Lee’ and another associate called “Dee”, had asked him to help negotiate the import of exotic fruit during Caribbean cruise stop-overs. But State prosecutor Manuela Brito rubbished his court claim that he had been “betrayed” by people he trusted, insisting that the Brits were drug mules, who used the four cruises they took to South America in two years as a front for their crimes. And she questioned how they could pay for the £18,000 cruises when they survived on a joint-monthly pension of £1,150, of which they had to pay £445 rent.

Happier times for the Clarkes before they were nabbed.

Possible tobacco-smuggler dies after collision of boats A SPANIARD died, after sustaining serious injuries during a collision with an HM Customs’ patrol boat off the eastern coast of Gibraltar, at around midnight last Monday.

A full investigation into the circumstances is underway, according to the Gibraltar Government, and it is thought that the deceased man was riding in a boat used for tobaccosmuggling. More than 100 people gathered in the border town of La Linea, in response

to the incident, hurling objects at security forces. A video, posted by the Union of Customs Officers in the Campo de Gibraltar, features the La Linea disturbance, and also calls on the leaders of some of Spain’s main political parties to do more to combat the smuggling of tobacco.

Violent man threatened to kill a hospital’s radiologist THE National Police have arrested a 30-year-old Moroccan in Arrecife, Lanzarote, charging him with attacking and using threatening behaviour against a medical technician.

He already had numerous charges against his name for committing similar crimes, and officers were dispatched to the hospital after receiving a direct call at their police headquarters by the medical team, who were working at the time.

The officers soon detained the man once they arrived there. Meanwhile, they interviewed the victim, who explained to the officers that the man thrashed out, suddenly, for unknown reasons, while his X-rays were being taken. There were witnesses in the area, who also told officers that the individual threatened the technician, violently. They said he tried to butt a radiologist, as well as screaming and threatening to kill him, and all the time, the technician was trying to take his X-rays. This encouraged the officers to charge the assailant, who is now in police custody, awaiting a court appearance.

Irishman drowns after a lengthy pilgrimage walk IRISHMAN Timothy Kelleher passed away last week, following a freak, late-night drowning after a renowned pilgrimage in Spain, as part of his holiday. The 35-year-old, known as Tim, from Ballyvourney, in County Cork, had been taking part in the popular Camino de Santiago walk, and Irish newspapers reported that he’d gone for a swim off Cabo Finisterre, at around 8pm. But because of his weariness after a long day on his feet, Tim was soon struggling. The alarm was raised and emergency services soon discovered him, in trouble. Attempts were made to resuscitate him by friends, initially, and then by medics, before he was taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital. Sadly, though, he was pronounced dead a short time later. This was not the first death of its kind in the area of the Camino path because an Italian teenager died there in 2010. Giulio Recusani, 19, became overwhelmed by the waves and was pronounced dead at the scene, despite attempts to revive him. And Tim’s death was the latest tragedy to strike Cork holiday-makers this year, because two young children drowned on holiday during the summer.

Franco reburial given Supreme

judgement, against family wishes SUPREME Court judges have agreed to dictator General Franco’s remains being moved from the Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen), in line with Spanish Government’s plans and rejecting an appeal by the deceased leader’s family’s against the decision. Franco is buried in the giant mausoleum, which is also a major tourist attraction in the Greater Madrid region, alongside hundreds of victims, killed by his own fascist regime, and those who fought in the Civil War against his Falangist army. Descendants of Franco’s victims consider this situation to “have no place” in a 21stCentury democracy, and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his Government agree. But plans to exhume the dictator were halted when his grandchildren filed an appeal to the highest, contentious court in the land. Now, though, the Supreme

Court has ruled that the Government’s proposed solution, for Franco’s body to be moved to the Mingorrubio El Pardo cemetery, in the Greater Madrid region, and buried next to that of his wife Carmen Polo, will go ahead. The family had proposed that if Franco were to be moved from the Valle de los Caídos, he should be buried in a crypt at Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral. But, as this is a public place of worship and a tourist attraction, the Government blocked the idea, as has the Supreme Court done so, too. The Franco family’s lawyer, Felipe Utrera-Molina, says the dictator’s grandchildren will exhaust all possible resources in their quest, because it is a matter of dignity. However, the dictator’s relatives have only the option of appealing to the Constitutional Court, whose role is purely that of interpreting the Magna Carta, to ascertain whether the appellant’s rights within it have been breached. Given that such an appeal is unlikely to succeed, the

only recourse left to Franco’s descendants will be to apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Utrera-Molina said that was exactly their plan, since they considered their Constitutional and human rights had been violated by their relative being exhumed against their will, and that he would be buried again in a location not of their choosing. “Their rights within the Constitution are being denied,” he insisted. “And the cemetery in El Pardo is also State-owned so, if the

New insect discovery is aged 105 million years!

A SPECIES of insect, estimated to be 105 million years old, has been found fossilised in a chunk of amber, discovered from an archaeological dig in the province of Teruel. It was found by historians from Oxford University’s Natural History Museum and from Spain’s GeoMining Museum in the village of San Just, in Aragón’s southern-most province, according to scientific periodical Sinc. In fact, Teruel’s amber sources are turning out to be a gold mine for experts studying the Cretacean era, and, says palaeo-biologist Enrique Peñalver, from the Geo-Mining Museum: “The latest find is key to understanding how insect claws evolved.” He added: “The insect is said to be of a predatory species, which were highly-specialist hunters,

Wanted Columbian arrested by officers NATIONAL Police have arrested a 38-year-old Columbian woman in Adeje, with an international warrant out for her arrest, and extradition to her own country, where she had been charged with homicide and possession of illegal firearms. The police followed various investigation leads before finding the wanted woman, and then held a special surveillance to establish her identity. They traced her to a popular hotel in the area and found her among other Columbians, some of who were family members. Once they had confirmation of her identity, along with the international warrants, the officers then detained her at the National Police Station, where she is being held, awaiting extradition.

The fossilised amber insect, pictured by Ricardo Pérez de la Fuente although their claws did not have the complex, sensory structure of today’s similar insects.” Originally, it was thought that the fossilised insect was a type of European Mantis, a large, haemimetabolic species in the Mantids family. But closer examination appeared to show that it was more likely to be part of the Chrysopidae strain, known in English as “Green Lacewings”, or the Myrmeleontidae. Its common name is the “Antlio”, and it is probably of the mantispid

or mantidfly type, whose wings are transparent and have the appearance of being made of lace or netting. To date, just five types of mantispid are known to have been found in Europe, and this is the first time a fossilised version has been discovered on the Iberian peninsula. “It is evidence that this type of insect actually did live in that part of the planet, over 100 million years ago,” said Ricardo Pérez de la Fuente, also from the Geo-Mining Museum.

It is now the sixthknown mantispid to be discovered in Europe, and has been named after the region where it was dug up. It is now known officially as the Aragomantispa Lacerata. It is the oldest yet to be found frozen in time in stone, and, added Peñalver: “It is another addition to the collection of extinct life forms found in Teruel amber, which will play a major part in experts’ understanding of ecology in Cretacean forests.”

Walker takes a painful tumble A WALKER, aged 34, injured himself last Saturday afternoon after falling on the Montaña Abadas, in the Arico municipality. Medics, who arrived in an ambulance, after the emergency services had been contacted, stabilised the man before taking him to the nearest medical centre, in Guimar. Local Police, and a team from the fire services, were also in attendance to lend a hand.

Murderer shot himself, instead of facing arrest Local Police will be

shorter in Madrid! SHORTER Local Police officers will now be on the beat in Madrid because the City Council has axed minimum height requirements, which, it said, amounted to “discrimination”.

A KNIFEMAN, suspected of stabbing a 26-year-old Spanish woman to death in an attempted Barcelona robbery in early September, killed himself last Thursday night as he was about to be arrested by the Catalan regional police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra. The incident took place in Barcelona’s San Roc de Badalona neighbourhood of Barcelona, and, say close sources, the murder suspect shot himself after dozens of Mossos surrounded the block in which he was located. Officers, who have opened an investigation to clarify what happened, had been looking for the man since 5th September, when a woman died after being stabbed in a violent,

attempted robbery at a nightclub called Smar, in Port Olímpic. The nightclub’s security cameras recorded the events: at 3am, the victimto-be was alerted by a witness that two men were trying to steal her cellphone. She turned to a security guard, who reprimanded the two thieves and kicked them out of the nightclub. But as the security guard escorted them out, one of the men stabbed him in the stomach and the woman in the chest. Both victims were taken by ambulance to Hospital del Mar, where the woman died, minutes later. The two suspects fled the scene without being detained, but the following day, thanks to the security camera footage, they were identified as locals from the San Adrià del Besòs neighbourhood.

The killer’s companion, who took part in the robbery, handed himself in to authorities on 12th September, After taking his statement, a judge ordered he be placed in pre-trial custody. According to police sources, the murder suspect committed suicide last Thursday, after realising he was about to be arrested. So far this year, 13 people have met with a violent death in Barcelona, and police are still investigating the August death of an elderly couple, inside their home. There were 49,300 crime reports between January and March in Barcelona, half of which were for theft. But the biggest cause for concern is the rise in violent theft (28%), representing around 40 cases daily.

The right-wing, PP-led, local government accepted its rival socialists’ proposal, and the lower height limit of 1.65 metres (5ft 5in) has now been scrapped. Guardia Civil officers’ campaign to reduce minimum heights in their force proved successful last February. Spain’s Government agreed the lower limits of 1.65m for men and 1.6m (5ft 5in) for women could be reduced to 1.6m for men and 1.55m (5ft 1in) for women. Madrid City Council considers this should set a precedent for its Local Police brigade, where the minimum

heights are even taller than those of the Guardia Civil. The municipal force’s women have to be at least 1.65m and men, 1.7m (5ft 7in), which the socialists consider “excessive”, especially for women, where the minimum is slightly above the national average of 1.6m. Although changing these rules is outside the jurisdiction of the local council, the parties agreed to put their request to the regional government, which has the power to make the decision. “There are lots of vacancies pending in Madrid’s Local Police force, and lots of exam sessions to convene, and we don’t want the next round of recruitments to discriminate against women,” said a Council spokesperson. While the heights stated also discriminate against men, it is more likely that a male applicant will be 5ft 7in or taller, than a 5ft 5in female applicant.

The officers soon detained the man once they arrived. Meanwhile, they interviewed the victim, who explained to the officers that the man thrashed out, suddenly, for unknown reasons, while his X-rays were being taken. Witnesses also told officers that the individual threatened the technician, violently. They said he tried to butt a radiologist, as well as screaming and threatening to kill him. And all the time, the technician was trying to take his X-rays. This encouraged the officers to charge the assailant, who is now in police custody, awaiting a court appearance.

Comic-style poster is so perfect for the Carnival SANTA CRUZ has presented its Carnival poster for 2020, revealing an innovative design, created by artist Javier Nóbrega, and dedicated, specifically, to the flirtatious 1950s, aspiring to represent the Carnaval of Carnivals. The poster was placed for all to see at the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz, by Santa Cruz Mayor Patricia Hernandez and head of Fiestas, Andrés Martín. The presentation took place in the Plaza de España, with hundreds of people attending the unveiling, all eagerly awaiting the design, The unveiling proved a success because the public were delighted with the poster, along with its originality. It was also a winner with Ms Hernandez. She said it had touched the Carnival spirit, knowing that the Chicharreros were already counting the days for the start of the fiesta.

She said Javier had managed to express what was on his mind, providing the Carnival essence on this impressive poster. Andrés Martín also congratulated him because he recognised the months of effort Javier had put into the work. Javier was extremely happy with the

result, explaining that he had used comic styles because they were so popular with everybody. The poster represents the Chicharreras, in the streets partying, reflecting their way of celebrating and having fun with others, as well as making fun of themselves.

Jet2 expands winter services Jet2 has announced thousands of extra seats on its routes out of Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle this winter. True, the move follows the collapse of Thomas Cook, but Jet2 says its new routes are a result of increased demand, and not because additional slots are being freed up by the failed tour operator. Jet2 has announced an impressive expansion of its winter capacity, which will add thousands of extra seats to destinations such as the Canary Islands and the Balearics, Cyprus, Greece, Spain and Turkey. The total of 170,000 extra seats will be added in the form of extra flights between October and March. Jet2 says they will be putting a focus on services throughout October to account for increased demand around school holidays. As reported by Travel Weekly, Jet2 services to the Canary Islands over the winter season will see an additional 100,000 seats alone. Jet2 chief Steve Heapy, said: “Last week saw an unprecedented volume of demand, and we have responded quickly to that by adding more flights and holidays to the sunshine this winter. The Jet2 winter-flight expansion focuses on destinations in Southern Europe and Turkey, where customers will be able to get their fix of much-needed winter sunshine.

Is time running out for the tax-free pension transfers? By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

IF you are already retired, or have chosen to retire in Spain, take steps now to review your pension options, before Brexit potentially changes the rules.

The option to transfer overseas Many expatriates have chosen to transfer their UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Transferring can consolidate several UK pensions under one tax-efficient roof, and provide greater investment diversification than UK schemes, with more freedom to vary income. Many QROPS also offer multicurrency flexibility to hold and draw your funds in your currency of choice, thereby minimising exchange rate risk.

And, while most UK pensions are payable only to your spouse on death, a QROPS lets you include other heirs in estate planning.

Taxation of QROPS transfers Currently, most expatriates in the EU can transfer to a QROPS, completely taxfree, but there are two key situations in which tax is payable. First, if your combined UK pension benefits exceed the UK’s lifetime allowance, currently £1.055 million, you would face a 25% tax penalty on anything transferred over the limit, even if you are nonUK resident. Once in a QROPS, your funds would never be subject to LTA charges, or any UK taxes, again. The second taxable scenario is if you transfer to a QROPS based outside the EU/EEA (European Economic Area). In this case (unless you live in the same jurisdiction as the QROPS), the UK would apply a 25% “overseas tax charge” on the whole amount

transferred. While expatriates in Spain can escape this tax by transferring to a QROPS based here, or in another EEA area, such as Malta, this may change with Brexit.

A closing tax-free window? As Brexit eliminates Britain’s current EU commitments, including freedom of movement for capital, the Treasury gains more scope to recoup revenue from UK nationals abroad. Many speculate this will prompt the UK government to impose widespread penalties on pension transfers, even within the EU. The UK government has offered reassurance that expatriates will keep the right to make overseas transfers, whatever happens with Brexit, but has stopped short of making any tax promises.

What you need to consider Without a guarantee that taxfree transfers will continue,

it is sensible for anyone considering transferring to act sooner, rather than later. Timing is especially important here, because the administrative process for pension transfers can take several months to complete. However, it cannot be overemphasised that transferring is not appropriate for everyone. Also, all QROPS are not the same. There are differences between providers and jurisdictions that can affect the benefits. Alternative investment structures could offer comparable benefits to QROPS, so take personalised, regulated advice, to establish the most suitable approach for you. Pensions are likely to play an important part in your long-term financial security, so it is crucial that you only use a fully authorised and regulated provider. An alarming number of people have lost retirement savings through pension scams, or by reinvesting in failed, unregulated investments, that offer no protection. Your adviser should take

into account your unique circumstances, income requirements, goals and tolerance for risk, as well as the cross-border tax implications, to establish the right solution for you and your family. Even if transferring is not right for you, with so much uncertainty ahead, now is the time to review your pension arrangements so you can secure the retirement of your choice in Spain, whatever happens with Brexit. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

For the first time, Lelian has invited the cameras in during the lead up to three of her clients’ weddings, providing a unique insight into this exclusive and extremely discreet world. From crystal chandeliers to gold-threaded outfits no demand is too extravagant for Lelian, who prides herself on making the couples’ special day a wedding to remember. As younger generations across Asia increasingly spend more time abroad, Lelian has to manage conflicting priorities between children and their parents. Noel 28, and Derek, 35, wanted an outdoor overseas wedding, but are now hosting a traditional eight-course banquet for up to

Prairie, 31, and Roger, 33, met while studying law at university and are hiring out an entire five-star resort for a destination wedding in Bali. In a truly opulent ceremony, there are hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of flowers across the venue and four dress changes for the bride. Lelian is also organising the wedding of Febyan, 26, and Angie, 25. Not content with just one ceremony, they will be hosting two lavish weddings, one at their vineyard in Italy and another in Indonesia. At their Italian wedding, Lelian will be ensuring an incredibly dramatic walk down the aisle by creating a platform so it looks like the bride is walking on water. As the extravagance of these weddings seems boundless, the programme also asks the wedding organisers whether they think the levels of opulence have gone too far.

To Catch A Serial Killer - With Trevor McDonald

This one-off documentary tells the real story behind ITV drama A Confession - in which detective Steve Fulcher, who by questioning serial killer Christopher Halliwell at a burial site elicited a confession to not just one murder but a second too - in the process destroying his own career. Presented by Sir Trevor McDonald and featuring new interviews, rare archive footage and reconstructions, this documentary first aired in ITV’s 2018 Crime & Punishment season provides a vivid insight into Halliwell’s horrific crimes through the words of the detective leading the investigation, key local journalists and relatives of the victims. Former Detective Superintendent Fulcher explains how he formed a bond with taxi

driver Halliwell after arresting him over the disappearance of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan. The killer confessed to her murder, and revealed he had also killed prostitute Becky Godden years earlier and left her body at another location. This led to a trail of evidence suggesting further murders, but the manner in which Steve gained Halliwell’s confessions breached police procedure by failing to caution him and denying access to a solicitor - compromising the court case against him and calling into question one of the most important principles of the criminal justice system. This programme explores whether Steve’s actions were a brilliant piece of detective work, or the result of his own arrogance and recklessness which ultimately cost him his job.

Al (Joe Absolom) decides to throw Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) a surprise engagement party on the same night, in an attempt to propose to Morwenna properly. PC Joe Penhale (John Marquez) takes on the duties of organising the engagement party, but only if Al promises him he can be his best man. Louisa has an important class presentation, as part of her tutorial group. To give it more of an informal feel, her tutor Professor Sam Bradman (John Hollingworth) has decided the person presenting will host the group; this week it is Louisa and Tony (Oliver Britten).

Benghazi, Libya provides a welcome change of scenery for former Wiltshire Police Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Martin Freeman), having resigned from his job in Wiltshire to take on a role as a ‘security consultant’ in November 2014. It is now over 3 years since he led the investigation that found murdered girls Sian O’Callaghan and Rebecca Godden-Edwards, and Fulcher is happy to be away from Gablecross Police Station. Things have moved on for Elaine Pickford (Siobhan Finneran) too, as she continues trying to carry on with her life by making plans to marry her partner Pete (Derek Riddell). The hope that the wedding would provide everyone with some much-needed relief from Sian’s death doesn’t’ however, go to plan as Elaine fears that she might have made a mistake. Meanwhile Karen Edwards refuses to give up the fight for justice for her daughter Becky, and continues to embarrass Wiltshire Police at every opportunity over their failure to re-investigate.

In episode three, Search Team Officer Jamie is leading the hunt for contraband in HMP on the Isle of Wight. Five years ago, the prison became a specialist unit and is home to some of the most serious offenders in the UK, including more than 1,000 sex offenders. The officers are specially trained to deal with the challenges this presents and finding mobile phones is a top priority. The team have a tip off that one of the inmates has a phone. Because they are acting on intelligence, they can go beyond a normal search. “He’ll get a full strip,” says Jamie. “You do what you’ve got to do.”

They celebrate good food with the local producers by making high quality chocolate and indulging in some must sought-after local cheese. THIS year, for the 13th annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards, Kirk Readings is back as host for the main event on Sunday, 13th October at Castillo San Miguel. We wanted to find out more about him, lovingly referred to by his radio colleagues as the Bearded Warrior! About Kirk: Age: 32 Where from: Pembrokeshire, West Wales How long in Tenerife: Two periods, over the last nine years Doing what: Entertainment generally, although I’ve done some sales and marketing work, too Trade before entertainment: I was always in sales, in the UK CW: So Kirk, you’ve had two stints in Tenerife. What brought you here in the first place, and what drew you back? KR: The island’s climate was beneficial for my children’s health when they were toddlers, so, with them as the priority, the rest just had to work! We took them back to start them in British education, but soon realised the climate here wasn’t just limited to health benefits, but lifestyle, too, and the education system we felt was, at least, on a par. Add to that the balance between work and life that I could achieve returning to entertainment, and we questioned why we ever left! CW: You work on the circuit, you are a singer and compere, and are on the radio at Oasis Fm. How do the three jobs differ? KR: I’ve got involved in the circuit again with my show “The Bearded Buble”. Previously, I found it to be an inand-out, wave-and-smile-and-disappear kind of thing. It’s a little unforgiving, because the show has to be top drawer all the time, every time, whereas compering lends itself to building relationships and forging bonds with regulars. I like trying new stuff out, which I get to do while I’m in Purple Beach in Playa Paraiso, and the regulars are pretty good at giving me some leeway, if it doesn’t go right, first time! With regards to the radio, it’s the job I grew up wanting to do. It’s a surreal form of entertainment for me, as I’m used to gauging the audience and their reaction to things, whether it be song choices, jokes or topics. When it comes to radio, there’s no instant feedback, good or bad, and that’s the biggest difference for me, personally. CW: Which do you prefer, and why? KR: Each has its own merit, as I explained. The role I prefer, above all others, is the radio, because it’s the one job I do that I had idols in. I never really holidayed in this entertainment environment as a child, so I don’t have experiences to draw on, or role models to imitate when I perform to a holiday audience. The radio role has a mysterious aura around it, and I love it. CW: How do you feel about hosting the TEAs 2019? KR: Not as scared as last year! It’s always good to get a bit nervous, but last year being my first I was petrified in case I messed up, plus I was following Nathan Swift as previous host, but this year I’m looking forward to it. Although I go on stage every night, it’s different in front of your peers and over 1,000 people, and I’m delighted that the organisers have kept faith in me, although I’m not sure yet what they have in store for me this year! CW: As an entertainer yourself, what do you think of the awards in general? KR: To be honest, what’s not to like? Firstly, they couldn’t happen if there weren’t the depth of talent and number of acts on the scene in the first place. Also, being an all-year-round resort helps, too, because it would be difficult to do this in a seasonal place that’s only open for the summer. Secondly, this is the only holiday resort in Europe, if not the world, that has an event of this scale every year, pushing the scene, and the people in it. Embrace it, and feel the love. CW: Every year there is banter during the nominations and voting. Has there been anything memorable for you? KR: Well, to be fair, I’ve always stayed a little bit distant, because I’ve preferred to get involved behind the scenes on the day, with either winners’ interviews or twerking! But this year has gone to a new level, with loads of really funny and creative videos, and celebrity tweets. It seems, finally, that people are actually “getting it”, and taking the awards for what they are meant to be … a celebration of the entertainment scene, an amazing day out, and not a bad way to market yourself, or your bar! CW: And what do you say to those people who are negative about it, or complain that people are asking for votes? KR: It’s quite ironic, really, as the TEAs itself doesn’t tell anyone they have to pitch for votes. But, let’s be honest; as entertainers, they have to market themselves, so it’s a natural thing to do plus they want to win! And then you see the people who were criticising, commenting on all the videos and banter, and joining in. As I said, it’s ironic, really. CW: How’s this year’s show coming on, and are there any surprises? KR: I haven’t seen everything yet, but the “Circus” theme does open the door to have some fun with it. All the TEAs I’ve been to, and have been involved in, have been brilliant, so I’m sure this year will be, too. It’s getting a reputation of not just being a day when everyone gets together, but also for being a great show, and all for a tenner! Surprises? There always are, but that would be telling. CW: And, finally, who have you voted for this year? KR: To be honest I haven’t. Like everyone, I’ve got my personal favourites, including those in the live categories on the day, but I wanted to stay impartial this year, in my approach as host. The Tenerife Entertainment Awards, sponsored by BGR Solutions are on Sunday, 13th October.

Listeria company chiefs’ charges of manslaughter OWNERS of the food company responsible for the worst-ever listeriosis outbreak in Spain, were arrested last Wednesday for manslaughter, after three people died since August, seven miscarriages were caused, and more than 200 people were infected. The source of the bacterial infection was traced to a Seville-based company called Magrudis, which sold a contaminated pork loin product called carne mechada, under the brand name La Mechá. Three more items produced by the company also tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. Magrudis owners, José Antonio Marín Pince and his two children Sandro and Mario, have been accused,

to different degrees, of involuntary manslaughter, crimes against health and causing injury to a foetus. Listeria is a bacterial infection that can cause severe illnesses, such as sepsis, meningitis and encephalitis. In a healthy person, the symptoms are minor. But for unborn babies and people whose immune systems are compromised, the infection can be fatal. According to investigators, the three men knew in February that some of their products had been contaminated. But they did nothing to eliminate the bacteria from their facilities. Instead, they continued producing and distributing their products. “When the crisis broke, we reminded the business by email that one of their samples had been contaminated much earlier,” José Antonio Borrás, who owns the Microal Group laboratory, told EL

Spanish Judge to prosecute

officers for migrant deaths SIXTEEN Guardia Civil officers will stand trial for, allegedly, the reckless death of at least 14 migrants, who drowned in Cueta trying to enter Spain.

An investigation was launched after it was believed that the migrants had perished after jumping into the water on 6th February, 2014, to avoid being detained by “riot police”. According to witness reports, a Guardia Civil boat was used as a barrier to prevent entry, together with two Army vessels. In one statement, a survivor claimed “red cartridges” and “smoke or gas canisters” were used to “baffle” the migrants. In January 2017 and August 2018, a magistrate ordered the dismissal of the case. But this was rejected by the Provincial Court, which ruled: “No effort should be spared, in order to exhaust the necessary investigative proceedings, and, thus, achieve sufficient and effective research that is required.”

PAÍS newspaper. “Given that they did nothing, we passed on this information to the courts.” The laboratory

handed a report to the court in early September, and, according to sources close to the investigation,

the contents prompted Judge Pilar Ordóñez, who is overseeing the case, to take action.

Pregnant mothers saved from baby-making scam NO fewer than 19 pregnant mothers and four children have been saved from a suspected baby factory in Nigeria, and investigators claimed the boys would be sold for £1,000 and the girls for £700, on the black market. They said the women were lured into the Lagos factories with the promise of domestic work, before being made to work as prostitutes and impregnated, forcibly. One woman was told she would be “paid handsomely” and released if she carried the baby to term. A few of the women signed up to work at the factory voluntarily, believing they would be paid. But they told officers they hadn’t seen a penny. Police raided four properties in the city on Monday and arrested two untrained nurses, Happiness Ukwuoma, 40 and Sherifat Ipeya, 54. But they are still looking for the main suspect, mum-offive Madam Oluchi, reports The Guardian Nigeria. The

women were aged between 15 and 28 and the youngest of the babies found by police was just a day old, according to local reports. Detectives caught wind of the factory on 19th September, after neighbours tipped them off about a large number of pregnant women in their street. One of the rescued women said she borrowed money to travel from her village to Lagos after being promised housekeeping work. After arriving at the bus

stop, she had her phone confiscated and was taken to the “factory”, where she was trapped for a year, reports the Vanguard newspaper. She said she was initially made to work as a prostitute every night, before falling pregnant and being moved to a different building. Her captors offered to pay her well and give her freedom back if she gave them her baby. Authorities say victims are now undergoing rehabilitation work, and that the investigation is ongoing.

No wonder these airline passengers boiled over!

El Hierro is rocked by series of earth tremors THE El Hierro Canary Island was shaken by an earth tremor that reached a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale in late September, centred at a depth of 56km and about 180km west of the island, according to the Canary Islands Seismic Network.

It was the first in a series of tremors recorded in the area. But although the tremor was felt by the island’s population at 1pm last Thursday,

there have been no reports of injuries or damage. Following this earthquake, another one occurred at 3.49pm local time, of 3.4 magnitude, and was located to the west of the La Frontera municipality, at a depth of 30km. Subsequently, 17 minutes later, another seismic movement of a magnitude of 2.5 was recorded in the same area, this time at a depth of 32km. In one 10-day period, there have been 10 earthquakes near the island, and, in the last month, the number of earthquakes has risen to 16.

Migrants are saved off Canary Islands

FURIOUS passengers, stuck in a sweat-inducing plane, which was grounded for five unbearable hours, have criticised Ryanair, who charged them for food and water. Lanzarote holiday-makers found themselves stuck on board the “sweltering” Edinburgh-bound plane, as temperatures outside reached as high as 30C. During that delay, they say, they were made to pay €3 a time, just to keep hydrated. Then, to add insult to injury, when the flight eventually took off, it had to be diverted to Bordeaux, at which point cabin crew finally handed around free drinks, according to The Mirror newspaper. But even that gesture didn’t materialise until a young mum on the flight, who had been taken ill, was forced to leave the aircraft to be assessed by waiting paramedics. By the time the plane reached Edinburgh, at 11.30pm, those on board had been inside for almost half a day. John Rafferty said: “The lady sitting next to us asked for water after we had been sitting on the plane in

scorching heat for three hours. But the stewardess said she wasn’t authorised to give it out. “A while later, the cabin crew started selling water and non-alcoholic drinks for €3. I had to pay €3 for water and €5.50 for a panini. “It wasn’t until we landed in Bordeaux, nine hours later, that we were offered free water. We understand that things sometimes happen, but the way it was handled was so poor.” Another passenger, Julie McCann said: “We did ask for water, but it was clear that it was ‘purchase only’. “A lot of people bought water, juice and food because we had been sitting for hours and were hungry and thirsty. I’d have thought the airline would automatically provide water after three hours.” Ryanair said the reason for the delay in Spain was down to “adverse weather”. A spokesman said: “This flight from Lanzarote to Edinburgh was, regrettably, delayed ahead of take-off, through adverse weather in Lanzarote, before departing to Edinburgh later that day. “Ryanair sincerely apologised to customers for this delay, which was completely outside of our control.”

What’s happened to our stock of booze?

A RECENT Police report has revealed that Zaragoza’s Examining Court number 6 is investigating the disappearance of 359 bottles of high-end liquor, from the cells at their Aragon headquarters.

DOZENS of African migrants, attempting to reach the Canary Islands in a battered, wooden canoe, were rescued off the archipelago, said emergency services. The 37 sub-Saharan migrants, one a child and all male, were saved by the Spanish Coastguard, six miles off Gran Canaria, after they had attempted to make the crossing from North Africa, revealed the Canarian

emergency services on Twitter. While migrant arrivals in Spain, as a whole, are down 46% compared with the same period last year, the Canary Islands have seen a 37% rise, according to data from Spain’s Interior Ministry. Yet crossing to the islands in the Atlantic Ocean, off Morocco, is a dangerous route for migrants, and dozens died last year attempting to make the crossing, according to the UN International Organisation for Migration.

The confiscated booze haul comprised part of the enormous 2,061-bottle removal from a Chinese citizen’s store in 2017. They remained in the care of Aragon’s National Police until last Thursday, when officers were ordered to move them to the Deanery’s depot, in the City of Justice. But when the officers took an audit of the alcohol before relocating it, they discovered that 359 bottles were missing, among them branded wines, Moët Chandon champagne, premium gin (Citadelle and Bulldog), along with bottles of rum, whisky and bourbon.

A “grass”, revealed recently by the local media in Aragon, has said the bottles were shifted, illegally, to different police dependencies in the area, shortly after the seizure. A probe into the affair, conducted in the right spirit, naturally, is also underway at the Superior Police Headquarters of Aragon.

Norwegian back in Tenerife, after Thomas Cook downfall N O R W E G I A N Airlines, which has re-evaluated its operations in Spain, aiming to move from growth to profitability, has eliminated six unprofitable Madrid routes, but will continue with its Tenerife South and Gran Canaria bases, after announcing closures there at the beginning of the year. Norwegian has decided to continue its operations there because of the new, competitive environment. And it admits the airline has been influenced by the Thomas Cook bankruptcy, and the closure of Ryanair bases. Therefore, say bosses, after a commercial analysis, the company has concluded: “Norwegian is in a much better position in the Canary market.”

The airline will offer 18 routes from Gran Canaria and another 13 from Tenerife, as well as 40% of all offered in Spain. From Gran Canaria, you can fly to Oslo Gardermoen and Oslo-Sandefjord/Torp, Bergen, Stavanger and Trondheim in Norway; Copenhagen, Aalborg and Billund in Denmark; Stockholm, Gothenburg and Karlstad in Sweden; Helsinki and Oulu in Finland; Reykjavik in Iceland; Gatwick in the UK, Germany’s Munich and Hamburg, as well as Spain’s Malaga. For Norwegian’s part, it will have connections from Tenerife with Oslo Gardermoen and Bergen in Norway; Copenhagen in Denmark; Stockholm and Gothenburg in Sweden; Helsinki and Oulu in Finland; Reykjavik in Iceland; Gatwick in the UK, Munich and Hamburg in Germany, along with

Alicante and Malaga in Spain. During the winter season, the airline will stop operating the routes between Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport with Stockholm and Palma de Mallorca, on 27th October, and Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Tenerife South and Gran Canaria, which will end on 8th January. Thus, Norwegian will offer a total of 79 Spain routes in the coming winter season, including five long-distance routes to the United States, and nine airports in the Peninsula, Balearic and Canary Islands. The company has already initiated discussions with union representatives, to ensure that such route re-evaluation has the least possible effect on crews based in Madrid. As a result of the same process of evaluating the performance of its routes, Norwegian will

continue to serve Madrid from a limited number of cities. For the 2019-2020

winter season, the airline will operate daily flights to Oslo and Gatwick,

as well as routes to Los Angeles and New York JFK.

Woman freed from loans taken secretly by hubby! A WOMAN, whose husband signed up for credit without her permission or knowledge, has been absolved from repaying the debt in a verdict by the Supreme Court which will set a precedent for similar cases. Generally, in financial terms, a married couple are treated as one jointly liable for debts contracted by either party in both names when the marriage becomes legal. In this case, the plaintiff’s husband had signed cheques, obtained and used a credit card and taken out personal loans, all in his wife’s name, from the now-defunct Banesto highstreet bank, which ceded the debts, in accordance with its usual practice, to the company Aiqon Capital Lux S.A.R.L. The husband had forged her signature, and even set up a post-office box number for bank statements to be sent to, so she would never find out. She did, however, when her husband defaulted on the repayments and she received a written demand for the sum of €17,808. The plaintiff asked the bank for explanations, divorced her husband and filed legal action against him for forgery. The case was dropped when he died, subsequently, so she then took action against Aiqon Capital Lux. Head magistrate María Ángeles Parra Luján found that the transactions with Banesto, now owned by Banco Santander, had not complied with legal standards, since the documents were not signed on the premises in the presence of a staff member, where it would have been obvious that the person signing was not the debtor. It transpired that the husband had managed to get employees to allow him to take all paperwork home to sign, by claiming his wife could not do so at the branch in person as she was at work when it was open to the public. María Ángeles Parra Luján cited the legal principle of “nemo propriam

turpitudinem allegare potest”, which, effectively, means that nobody can use his or her own clumsiness, negligence or omission as a defence. To this end, the judge said, the bank would have to suffer whatever consequences arose through their own incorrect handling of the transaction. The plaintiff was not required to refund the debt, even though the original forger was deceased, leaving no possibilities for Aiqon Capital Lux to recover the money. But the judge rejected a claim from the affected ex-wife against Aiqon Capital Lux for compensation for moral damages, saying the firm, which acquired the debt, had no knowledge of the fraud and had acted correctly and in line with normal business procedures, while attempting to reclaim the debt from the plaintiff. Decisions by the Supreme Court, the highest contentious court in the land, have no room for appeal, unless the appellant considers his or her rights, provided for in Spain’s Magna Carta, have been breached. In this case, he or she can apply to the Constitutional Court, whose exclusive rôle is that of interpreting the intentions of this legal framework, brought into effect nationwide in December 1978. If this route fails, or is not appropriate, the only recourse is the European Court of Human Rights, or the European Court of Justice.

Marijuana trio also had Accion del Sol News €9,400, and a revolver! Child in danger! WE have a very sad situation that has occurred, with a family that allowed their large, Presa Canarian dog to have puppies. Their twoyear-old child went to pick up a puppy and was badly bitten, resulting in permanent scarring.

Police count the ill-gotten cash, made from the trio’s sales of drugs

THREE people were arrested in a countryside house near Cadiz, after police found 40kg of marijuana there. The perpetrators, aged 50, 39 and 22, were detained as part of “Operation Pudeca”, in which the authorities uncovered drugs, €9,400 in cash and a revolver.

Police had been alerted to a suspicious building in La Puebla, which had agricultural tools and a strong smell of marijuana, so they began a search of the area. During their hunt, officers found several bags, scales and plants, as well as around €9,400 in cash, some of it in 500-euro notes. They also seized about 19kg of tobacco.

Missing man’s partner searches island for him

In addition to that, the dog had no microchip and wasn’t registered at the town hall, so the dog and puppies have been taken from the very irresponsible owners, until further notice. We can never stress enough the importance of never allowing your child to go near newborn puppies, especially unsupervised, and having the correct papers for your pet. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge.

Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and fleafree. They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Beautiful Bella MY name is Bella and I am 10 months old. I like to play like a puppy. I don’t like barking, and I am very quiet. I love people, big or small, and I never try to take the ball out of your hand. I am very careful and gentle. I also like other dogs to play with. I am in the best refuge on the island, but I would dearly love to live with a family, for the rest of my life. Please can you help me?

DEBORAH Hulme, the 48-yearold partner of a Sheffield man missing on Lanzarote, has flown to island in a bid to find him. She spent last week on holiday there with Richard Bodfield, 46, and they were set to fly home together last Thursday. But after the pair became separated at Arrecife Airport, before check-in, Richard, a fatherof-one from Wincobank, failed to board the plane. He was reported missing to the authorities, and his concerned partner launched a Facebook campaign to urge holiday-makers to help find him. Richard, who has battled a drink

problem for years, relapsed on holiday. He contacted Deborah on Monday, after turning up at a hospital and using a British ex-pat’s phone to call home. However, he was not admitted to the hospital, and Deborah did not know whether he would be there when she arrived on Tuesday. The Barnsley woman said: “He went to a hospital, and a British lady who lives on the island contacted me on Facebook, after letting Richard use her phone to speak with me. He said he had lost all his belongings, including his passport, so we will have to sort that out when I find him. “But the main thing is that he is alive, and things are looking positive now.

Meet Miss Grey!

THIS beautiful girl is four months old, and very sweet and quiet. She has had both injections, and has been wormed and deflead.

We have other older kittens available, of both sexes, between 3-5 months, which is an ideal age for anyone who doesn’t want to adopt a very young kitten. Adoption We also have several younger kittens available for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside for them to frolic to their hearts’ content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 6712 82773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 6625 24006, if you would like to enquire about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Clothes required We are appealing, please, for good quality ladies’ and men’s clothes. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. Shop volunteers We need people who would like to work in our charity shop. Shifts are from 10am-2pm and 2-6pm, and you will never work alone. The air-conditioned shop has a lovely atmosphere, and tea, coffee, and a fridge full of goodies are provided.

They’re all there to be enjoyed, while in the company of our friendly volunteers, and very valued customers! If you are interested, contact us on Facebook, or pop into the shop for more information. Even if you can only spare a few hours a week, that’s fine! Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, please ring Mark on 6365 90557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Meet Lucia (Lucy)

THIS playful girl is approximately three years old. She is a mixed breed, with, we believe, some boxer in her. She came to the rescue centre, after having been found wandering in Las Zocas. She could hardly walk, and both her back legs were damaged. With lots of

care and treatment from our vet, she is now fully recovered. She is full of fun and loves to play, especially fetch. She´s good with other dogs, but a little nervous with new people. She will need patience and love, but we are certain she will make a wonderful pet. Please do get in touch if you are able to offer Lucy a foster or permanent home. We also need a foster home for Max, our labrador.

Pipo and Lucky

HOW cute are these faces? These two handsome boys are up for adoption at K9. Having recently arrived at the shelter together, they are feeling confused, and not sure why they have ended up there. Pipo is the small black beauty and Lucky is our tan Cocker. Both of these boys are nine years old, and it would be a dream come true if we could rehome them together. How did they end up at K9? Once again, it was through no fault of their own. Their owner moved to Madrid and was unable to take them, so he wanted them to find a new, loving home. At this age, they do not know what they have done wrong, or why they are at K9. There was an option for a friend to take them, who lives on a finca, but they would have been by themselves for the majority of the time. The ex-owner preferred to bring them to K9, so they would have a chance of finding a new loving home, to live out the rest of their years. Pipo is very outgoing and friendly, whereas Lucky can be a little shy. He can bark at dogs when out walking, so we would recommend a house with no small children. They have been together a long time, so if they could find a new loving home together, how amazing would

that be for them both? They both deserve a second chance, wouldn’t you agree? You can meet them at K9, any day between 9.30am-1.30pm, and maybe take them for a walk. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com They are only two our some of our recent arrivals at the shelter, so we would be so happy if you came up to meet them, and all our other dogs and cats who are looking for their second chance to find a new, loving, forever family. Can you help, or do you know anybody who can? These two are probably our oldest dogs at the shelter, so we want to find them new homes as soon as possible. Please spread the word. Thank you, once again, for your continued support. Great news! Jones and Mufasa, who have appeared in the Canarian Weekly, have both been adopted! Lucky them! Christmas party It is only October, but keep an eye out for details, in the next couple of months, of our Xmas party in December! It isn’t too far away, and promises to be a great night, as always! Tickets can sell out quickly, so please contact K9 to receive yours. Thanks to you all, for your continued support.

Wine and Dine

Spain’s food and drink now so popular in UK BREXIT should not stop British people enjoying Spanish food and drink, given that exports from the Mediterranean country to the UK have increased significantly in the last two or three years, and demand is not expected to decrease much, if at all. That’s the view of industry expert José Antoni Valls, of the Alimentaria food and drink fair, who says there should not be any changes to the bilateral relations between the two countries after 31st October, since British consumers are demanding more and more wine, fruit and vegetables, meat and olive oil. These relations remain healthy, he stresses, because Spain is the second-largest exporter of food produce to the UK, topped only by The Netherlands, which is popular because of being geographically closer. In fact, a total of 6.7% of

Spain’s food exports go to the UK, he says. Structurally, food and agricultural produce exported from Spain to Britain has increased significantly in the last two or three years. Rather than this major hike in demand being a case of “Brexit stockpiling”, Valls believes it is more down to a growing British acceptance of Spanish food and drink, value for money and the fact that Spain is a completely accessible market. Spanish influence is more visible than ever in British supermarkets, cafés and restaurants nowadays: chorizo, juice from Valencia oranges, tortilla (Spanish omelette), brava spicy sauce for patatas bravas, all oli and other Mediterranean groceries are now mainstream in the UK, while café cortado is served in high-street coffee chains such as Costa and Starbucks. Last year, the most indemand Spanish product was wine, and even though New World varieties and

Chill Out bar and restaurant Chill Out bar and restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, including Chateaubriand and Dorada al Sol. Why not come and dine, whilst watching the sun setting over Las Vistas beach, truly a beautiful setting to enjoy a lovely meal.

French and Italian wines are the most prolific, cava is being seen as a viable alternative to Prosecco, and a cheaper alternative to champagne, and Castillo de Liria wine retails at over four times the price it sells for in Spanish supermarkets, and is still considered a reasonable price. Tinned fruit and frozen vegetables, and olive oil, were the second- and thirdmost purchased Spanish goods, valued at €309m and €163m respectively. Valls believes the different scenarios, which could result through Brexit, will not take the focus off Spanish producers in favour of other markets, since it all depends upon many variables. These “variables” include factors in the receptor market, and whether the produce is fresh, perishable, or staple. But overall, Valls believes, it will be the end consumer in the UK who will feel the effects of Brexit in his or her pocket. “Concerns are there, but concerns are one thing

and alarmism is another,” says Valls. “We need to wait and see. Of course, other repercussions of the UK leaving the European Union might affect production volume, such as the depreciation

Health

4th October - 10th October 2019

Huge bone-marrow donor campaign such a necessity By Val Sainsbury HEALTH authorities in Spain are calling for men aged between 18 and 40 to sign up as bone-marrow donors in a huge campaign, in the hope of creating a “bank” of available givers. Un Match x Una Vida (One Match for Life) is a joint effort between the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) and the regional and national governments, as well as the International José Carreras Foundation Against Leukaemia charity. The campaign name, according to acting Health Minister María Luisa Carcedo, is based upon dating sites and Apps, and the difficult task of finding the right partner, or match. The Spanish Registry of BoneMarrow Donors (REDMO) says the substance needed, a spongey tissue inside the bone which creates red blood cells, and which can fail in

leukaemia patients or can be destroyed by aggressive chemotherapy, “is at its most useful” when the person donating is aged between 18 and 40. And although female donors are most welcome, the register is already made up of 63% women, which means it has a shortage of male donors. Also, says Dr Beatriz Domínguez, Director-General of the ONT, men are more likely to be called up to donate, three times more likely, in fact, since their bone marrow seems to give better results when transplanted. Spain has around 400,000 registered bone-marrow donors, in addition to 65,000 samples of blood, from umbilical cords held in banks. The latter is used to extract stem cells, which can be used to treat the person originally attached to the cord in later life. It can also be used for cancer patients, who need a stem cell transplant when extra-high doses of chemotherapy are necessary. Compatibility is measured

by a simple blood test, and donors on the register are called, if ever they are found to be a match for someone who needs a bone-marrow transplant. Although the Health Minister says being a bone-marrow donor “is the bravest thing anyone can do”, it doesn’t actually need a great deal

of courage because the substance is extracted under sedation, so the donor does not feel any pain. But Ms Carcedo adds: “Bonemarrow donation is the most wonderful thing anyone can do for another person, and it’s a huge act of solidarity,” and that really is the case. Like any organ transplanted,

this life-saving operation requires an exact donorpatient match, meaning that even if thousands of organs are available, it is possible that none will be the right one. And Spain’s Health Ministry is aiming to get half-a-million male donors, aged 40 or under, on its books by the year 2022 at the latest.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE went to Lugo last Sunday with the aim of improving on a goalless draw when they last met, on the penultimate day of last season The Lugo coach surprised home fans by leaving central defender Peybernes on the bench, and moving club captain Pita from midfield to fill the gap. It was obvious, immediately, to see this was a mistake as Tenerife put on pressure at the Anxo Carro stadium. And it wasn’t long before Álex Bermejo had a longrange shot, which was fumbled by Lugo keeper Varo, to put the visitors ahead after 11 minutes. The goal unsettled the “rojiblancos”, and, following a really good collective move, the blanquiazul extended their lead. Alex Muñoz was put through and cut it back past Pita, perfectly, for Filip Malbasic to slot home easily past Varo, to make it 2-0 in the 21st minute. The second goal seemed to awaken Lugo, who started to attack, and Álex López came close to Ortolá’s goal almost immediately. Then, half-an-hour in, they found a way through. Manu Barreiro and Muñoz battled in the Tenerife box for a cross, and the referee awarded a penalty to Lugo for Muñoz’s challenge. It looked like a soft penalty, but Barreiro, who wasn’t arguing, stepped up himself, sending Ortolá the wrong way and scoring from the spot to make it 2-1. After this came a Lugo on-

slaught. As many as four consecutive attacks involved Álex López, José Carlos, Barreiro and Gerard Valentín, before a controversy decided by VAR. Pita had the ball in the back of the net at the end of the first half, but VAR confirmed that it had hit Valentin’s elbow, and referee Milla Al-

vendiz had to disallow the goal, so, Lugo went in at half-time 2-1. The second half started with VAR’s intervention again, this time awarding a penalty to Tenerife for a Barreiro handball in the area. Malbasic made sure, scoring from the spot to make it 3-1 in the 52nd minute.

The penalty sank Lugo and it was all Tenerife for the rest of the game, closed off by a second for Bermejo in the 60th minute when he finished a great collective move by scoring from 12 yards out to put Tenerife 4-1 ahead. Lugo tried to salvage something, Canella hitting the

bar, and there was even a penalty claim, denied by VAR at the end. But Tenerife came away with a valuable three points and coach Lopez Garai was happy with the way they had played. As for Lugo, who have only won one match this season, they slipped towards the bottom of the table.

But they’re not so happy at home TENERIFE had their next home game against bottom club Oviedo, and coach Lopez Garai started with the same XI who had won in Lugo.

But from the off, CDT looked a bit leggy and off the pace, whereas a freshlooking Oviedo attacked straight away in search of their first win of the season. Barcenas had an early shot from 20 yards out on the left, which beat Ortolá. But, fortunately, the ball went just wide for a goal-kick, letting Tenerife off the hook. In the 25th minute, Omar Ramos played a lovely long ball from the halfway line, looking for the Panamanian Oviedo striker. It looked as though Luis

Pérez had it covered for Tenerife, but he put his arm up instead, looking for a non-existent offside! Barcenas continued his run, one-on-one with the CDT keeper, who fumbled the shot and gifted Oviedo a 1-0 lead. After that, Tenerife buckled down and worked hard. They had 70% of the possession, and put several crosses in to the Oviedo box, but to no avail. Heading towards half-time, CDT were awarded a penalty when a Borja Lasso header was handled by Sangalli. With the ball on the spot and Malbasic ready to take it, VAR intervened and a four-minute delay ensued, which eventually ruled out the penalty for off-side in the build-up, Tenerife finishing the first

half trailing by a goal. The second half saw a poor performance from both teams, with few chances and little danger for either keeper. So, at the final whistle, Oviedo had beaten Tenerife at home, leaving them at the foot of the table, but still in touch with those ahead. As for Tenerife, they are 12th, with 11 points from nine matches. After the match all the talk and controversy was about referee López Toca and VAR as during the match, 18 minutes was lost in total, with only five minutes of extra time played! Tenerife continue their campaign tomorrow (Saturday) with another home game, hoping to rectify this defeat against Extremadura.

World-class Dina has that golden glow now DINA Asher-Smith, who stormed to victory in the 200m at the World Championship in Doha, is the first British woman to win a major, international sprint title. The 23-year-old outclassed her rivals in a stunning performance to win gold in a national record of 21.88sec, with American Brittany Brown taking silver (22.22) in Doha and Swiss Mujinga Kambundji claimed the bronze (22.51). Asher-Smith, who earlier in the competition won silver in the 100m, is the first Briton to win a world or Olympic sprint title since Linford Christie in 1993. Dina said: “I don’t know what to say, I don’t think it’s properly sunk in. Jon [her coach] and I knew I could do it, and it means so much. I woke up today thinking, “This is it. I dreamed of this, and now it’s real.” Four-time Olympic gold medallist Michael Johnson said: “This was all about Dina Asher-Smith living up to expectation that she should win this medal. The Brit also secured silver in the 100m, saying, ‘It’s not easy to do. There are many athletes who do not’.” Johnson added: “The race went as expected, coming out establishing that lead with great speed round the

There will be an opportunity for Dina to run against the best, and this is the beginning of an era. “Dina Asher-Smith is going nowhere. She is only 23, has the right attitude, and the talent, so we will get a chance to see that.” Meanwhile, Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Denise Lewis said: “She has managed to unlock the formula. Colin Jackson, the twotime world 110m hurdles champion, was also full of praise for Dina, adding: “She has run two personal bests in two finals, and that’s all you can ask for. It was a fantastic performance from this woman. She went up and beyond anything she has done before.”
