A CRIMINAL gang, dedicated to drugtrafficking, has been dismantled by the Guardia Civil in Operation TUBO TF, after importing large volumes of cocaine to Tenerife, from Uruguay.

It resulted in the arrest of three men and two women, comprising three Spaniards and two Uruguayans for a drug-trafficking offence, and another of belonging to a criminal group.

Members of the gang posted large quantities of cocaine to the island, and, subsequently, supplied the narcotic drug to several small, local vendors, who sold the cocaine to consumers in the El Médano area, San Isidro, Granadilla, and most tourist areas in South Tenerife.

The investigation began at the end of last May, when a first postal shipment containing 5kg of cocaine was intercepted by the Fiscal Company of Barajas Airport (Madrid).

As a result of surveillance work on the group, and analysis, it was found that

each member had a special mission. His and her main activity was the handling and sale of narcotic substances, sent in postal shipments from Uruguay to Tenerife.

In August and September, two more shipments were detected, also from Uruguay.

The first, in the form of a decoy, was empty, while the second contained 2kg of cocaine.

After multiple follow-ups and surveillance work on the investigated group, evidence of its activity was found, and raids were carried out on 19th September, with the support of Citizen Security personnel from the Guardia Civil in Las Américas and the Cinological Service, in the towns of Parque de La Reina, El Fraile, El Médano and San Cristóbal de La Laguna, where the defendants lived.

Around 7kg of cocaine were seized, and officers found 61,200 dollars, €8,300 in cash, a kilo of marijuana, tools for handling and two simulated firearms, as well as a vehicle.

As a result, the collaborated experts, directed by the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 3 of Granadilla de Abona, agreed to detain the five suspects.

Snatched mobile phone cost a whopping €1,100 NATIONAL Police have detained a 20-year-old man in Telde, Gran Canaria, for stealing a mobile phone, worth €1,100, from a minor.

The arrest was made after the victim’s father made an official police report claiming that while his son was on the phone, another person snatched it from him, violently.

Officers began to investigate by doing the rounds at the local, second-hand, buyingand-selling shops. One shop assistant told them that a young man, aged around 20, had been in his shop to

try to sell a mobile phone. The assistant he remembered the because he was acting very suspiciously. His description was taken by officers, and, of course, the mobile phone he was trying to sell, which matched the details supplied by the minor’s father.

The officers searched the vicinity and found a person matching the description, who was arrested. They then conducted a quick body search of the would-be seller, coming across the phone at the same time.

The officers charged the youngster with robbery, using intimidation and violence.

He is now waiting to appear before a judge, while the mobile phone was returned to its rightful owner.

The new rules have been outlined by Pere Navarro, Director General of Traffic, in his official presentation of the latest campaign, on behalf of wheelchair users: “I can’t go here, I can’t fit through there” (Por aquí no puedo, por aquí no paso).

It is promoted by the Association of People with Spinal Injuries & Severe Physical Disabilities (ASPAYM), and, said Navarro: “Pavements are for pedestrians, wheelchairusers and for people pushing prams and pushchairs. Our intention is that vehicles such as scooters will not use them in any capacity.”

He added: “Current regulations prevent scooters

and bikes travelling along pavements, but we also want to prevent them parking there, too.”

The traffic chief also stressed the need to reduce the number of car-parking spaces, to allow for scooters, bicycles and motorcycles to be parked, away from pavements.

He praised the ASPAYM for its recent campaign, highlighting another pavement factor: “In addition to wheelchair-users, there are nine million people over 65 who need to walk, for health reasons, and who also want the pavements to be free of obstacles.

“It is true that obstacles are everywhere, and sometimes we are not aware of the amount of space taken

up by lamp-posts, traffic lights, road signs and bins, not to mention advertising hoardings or outside seating for bars and cafés.”

He added: “The challenge is to design a pole that can combine street-lighting with traffic lights, road signs and rubbish collection, which requires imagination and the kind of vision you get from a wheelchair, rather than from the comfort of an office.”

The primary objectives of this latest campaign are to appeal to society as a whole to adopt safe and responsible behaviour in public spaces, and to promote a harmonious coexistence of different road and pavement-users, in an attempt to prevent traffic accidents.

Hooligans cause chaos during Tenerife flight

POLICE bundled seven British men off an easyJet flight, after the captain was forced to make an emergency landing because they started punching each other.

Witnesses say one man spat in a woman’s eye during the fight, which involved two groups travelling from Manchester to Tenerife last Thursday. The incident was believed to have started around two hours after the 5.35pm take-off, when a group of four “lads” started punching each other, before the plane was diverted to Faro, Portugal.

An air-stewardess broke up the initial fight and seated one man at the front of the plane in an effort to calm tensions, as onlookers shouted abuse at the instigators. Minutes later, witnesses say the man vaulted back to the group, and things kicked off again!

Onboard video footage captured the commotion during the flight.

Other passengers tried to break up the fight, which is when one of the men was alleged to have spat in a woman’s eye. On video filmed inside the plane, a girl is heard to shriek, as another woman says: “There’s children on the airplane.” A man then shouts: “He f******

spat on a woman… dirty b*******.’

Nathan Belford, 30, of Stokeon-Trent, said a 10-man stag party then howled with rage, as the captain announced plans to divert the plane. They then picked a fight with both cabin crew and the four-man group.

The stag-party members complained bitterly to the stewardess, and even started pinching drinks from the front of the plane.

The plane landed in Portugal at around 8pm, and security officers bundled seven men, all from the fourstrong group, and three from the stag party, off the plane. Nathan, added: “We couldn’t believe what was happening. We just wanted to go on holiday.”

Seven men were taken away by Portuguese officials, and one passenger praised the security response, before the pilot later completed the journey to Tenerife.

Nathan said the security men were impressive in removing the troublemakers from the flight,

adding: “One of the guys they had to carry off was at least 6ft 6ins.”

An easyJet spokesperson said in a statement: “We can confirm that flight EZY1903, from Manchester to Tenerife, on 3rd October, diverted to Faro as a result of some passengers on board behaving disruptively. And it was met by police on arrival. The passengers were removed by police and the aircraft continued on to Tenerife.”

It added: “EasyJet’s cabin crew are trained to assess and evaluate all situations, and to act quickly and appropriately, to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time.

“While such incidents are rare, we take them very seriously, and do not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour on board. The safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is our highest priority.”

The plane finally completed its journey to Tenerife after an overall, 2½-hour delay.

Government wading in to rescue tourism sector THE Spanish Government is pumping hundreds of millions of euros into the country’s tourism sector, to help it deal with the fall-out from travel company Thomas Cook’s bankruptcy.

The move came days after the Spanish hotel federation warned that hundreds of hotels faced imminent closure, over the collapse of the British tour operator, if the Government didn’t act immediately.

Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto told a news conference that Madrid would inject €300m to deal with the urgency of Thomas Cook’s failure. And most of the money is destined for the Canary Islands and the Balearics, which were among Thomas Cook’s prime destinations.

Some 400,000 tourists had booked for travel this winter to the Canaries, and a further 300,000 were heading for the Balearics Islands. But, said Maroto: “They were not coming because of the bankruptcy.”

Up to two-thirds of the total funds will help repay loans to tourism companies, to make up for the shortfall from bills left unpaid by Thomas Cook.

The Government also plans to lower air-travel taxes to encourage airlines to fill the gap left by the British company rapidly, because the Spanish holiday islands are hugely dependent on air travel.

Other measures include a tax holiday for tourism workers, help with tourism marketing efforts, and legal assistance for those companies affected.

Maroto did not say whether there were any plans to sue Thomas Cook in British courts. But he confirmed that the giant travel company was Spain’s second-largest tour operator, flying more than seven million visitors to Spain, and its islands, in 2018.

German walker dies in barranco tumble

AN extensive search, last Monday evening, enabled Guardia Civil officers to find the body of a German holiday-maker, who fell into the Barranco Caldera de Taburiente, on La Palma.

He had been walking with another man and a woman at the

time of the accident.

The emergency services were notified by the search helicopter crew, who said they had located the trio for whom they were searching, which is when the Guardia officers were sent to the exact location.

The officers soon began

helping the man and woman to safety, but their companion had fallen into the barranco, and, unfortunately, was found lifeless.

But the helicopter crew continued with the rescue, and the couple, who were taken to a heliport in Tenisca, in Llanos de Aridane, were in shock but unharmed.

The helicopter pilot then went back to recover the body and return to Tenisca, where a judge, responding to procedure, was waiting to declare the man’s death.

The walkers were a 56-yearold woman and a man aged 60, and it was thought that the man who died was also around 60.

Brother and sister both dead indoors

A MAN and a woman, both in their sixties and reported to be brother and sister, were found dead at their Tegueste home, in the Santa Cruz region of Tenerife.

Spanish media say the bodies were discovered at around 7.30pm last Thursday, at their two-storey property in the Pedro Alvarez area, and could have been there for several days.

The woman’s body was said to have been covered with a sheet, while the man’s body was in another room.

Huge weekend clean-up rids beaches of rubbish

AS many as 180 volunteers took part in a mammoth clean-up last weekend across the Canary Islands, specifically along the rocky, coastal areas.

It proved to be a worthwhile task because they were able to collect around 5,500kg of accumulated rubbish, and, to date, it has been reported that 26,000kg of waste had been removed from 40 rocky

coastlines around mainland Spain.

Last Saturday, in the Canaries particularly, 30 volunteers removed 1,400kg of rubbish from the Valleseco beach in Santa Cruz. Another 80 people ventured to Porís, in Arico, where they removed 500kg, comprising various types of plastics, cans, bottles, tires and textile remains, along with hundreds of cigarette butts, floating, mainly, some 100m from the coast.

of bottles and cans, several plastics and, most surprisingly, several truck wheels!

In La Gomera, the clean-up continued with the removal of a fascinating 3,500kg, featuring plastics, glass, plastic containers, wheels, batteries, wooden pallets… and even sex toys among the rubbish!

As well as the weekend’s accumulated rubbish, recent studies show that Poris de Abona is one of the most affected coastlines across the whole of the Canary Islands, which are plagued with microplastics.

Beach thief caught out by a hawk-eyed tourist

A MAN aged 30, and a female associate, both saddled with criminal records, were arrested by National Police last Sunday afternoon after getting up to their old tricks.

They were caught using intimidation and violence to rob tourists at Arona’s El Camisón beach, but the man was taken by surprise when a tourist on the beach saw him stealing the belongings of a sun-bather, who was swimming at the time.

The thief took flight, but the witness trailed him, catching up with him

at the avenue Rafael Puig Lluvina, where an older woman was waiting for him.

The victim had accompanied the witness, and they followed the thief, approaching him and the woman in an attempt to recover the owner’s belongings. Suddenly, a struggle broke out between all four people.

Fortunately, the National Police arrived rapidly and separated all four, speaking to each one in an attempt to piece together what had happened.

After questioning all four, the police arrested the male thief, along with the woman, who were taken to the station for further questioning.

Battered body was all down to Tenerife man

A TENERIFE man has been arrested and charged with the murder of another man from the island, in Gran Canaria’s Sima de Jinamar, in Telde.

The victim’s body was found with multiple fractures, as well as several gunshot wounds, and his face was disfigured. The case is now being investigated, but officers have declined to offer any information on the case, by order of the Telde Courts’ judge.

The body was discovered last Friday (4th Oct) by another man, who was showing the area to a friend. But both were shocked by the foul smell which greeted them, in the vicinity.

Upon closer inspection of the area, they saw the body of a man, lying face down, some 10 metres into a crevice.

Sources say the body showed signs of being shot at several times, and both the victim’s legs were fractured.

NEWS IN BRIEF Thousands march in Police save new-born baby

THREE heroic Local Police officers saved the life of a newborn baby, after he began choking in a Malaga street.

They were patrolling Plaza San Agustin on Tuesday, when two men and a woman ran towards them in a panic, carrying a baby.

“They were running and crying so we stopped,” one of the officers told Diario Sur. “The mother screamed: ‘My son is choking; my son is dying!'”

The quick-thinking policemen, who had been trained in first-aid, performed CPR on the baby, who was just 11 days old. “I looked at the boy and he opened his eyes and started breathing again,” said one officer.

The baby was transferred to Antequera Hospital, where he was kept overnight and discharged the next morning.

Another officer said: “There are three things I will never forget; when the mother gave us her son; when he opened his eyes, and when we knew he had been discharged and was okay.”

Migrant boy’s rescue death

A SIX-YEAR-OLD boy, who was rescued by helicopter,

alongside his mother, from a migrant boat in the Alboran Sea, died, tragically, during his medical evacuation to Almeria airport, where emergency doctors could do nothing to save his life.

A Maritime Rescue spokesman said a Frontex patrol boat first sounded the alarm for the migrant child, who had a “weak pulse” and a body temperature below 36C. The boat, with 66 people from Sub-Saharan Africa on board, including 22 minors, was sighted by the “Golden Bridge” ferry when it was sailing about 45 nautical miles south-southeast of Granada’s Motril coast.

The rest of the migrants were transferred to the Guadamar “Concepción Arenal”, before being taken to the Port of Malaga .

Those rescued comprised 30 men, 13 women and 23 minors, who were treated at 6.30am that day by volunteers from the Red Cross Immediate Emergency Response Team (ERIE).

Woman lives after huge fall

A WOMAN aged 22 was left in a serious condition, after falling from the sixth floor of a Malaga building in Calle Lagunillas, in the capital, on Tuesday evening.

The 112 Emergency services said several calls were made at around 7.30pm, reporting her fall, and National Police said she fell after leaning on a window rail in poor condition, which gave way.

Amazingly, she survived, but she is still regarded as “serious” in Carlos Haya hospital.

Hunt on for man in sea

THE Canarian emergency services activated a search for a man who fell into the sea in the Veril area of Puerto de la Cruz, at around midday last Saturday.

The incident happened when a man and a woman were in a rocky area and one of them fell into the sea. Cecoes 1-1-2 immediately activated the emergency services. A rescue helicopter involved was able to save the woman, and continued its hunt for her companion.

Firefighters, Local and National Police, the Guardia Civil and Maritime Rescue also played their part in a huge operation.

The Special Group of Underwater Activities (GEAS) members also joined the search the following day.

MORE than 5,000 people, most of them not even old enough to vote, marched around the streets of Tenerife capital Santa Cruz earlier this week to raise awareness of world climate change.

The demonstrations were prompted by the young Swedish activist Greta Thunburg, in aid to promote awareness to “save the planet”.

The march began at 11am, from the central campus of La Lagunas University,

and, at the beginning of the march there were different groups representing different secondary schools specifically from the La Laguna region.

The demonstration grew in size as it passed through La Laguna’s main streets, until it reached the Plaza del Adelantado. And an estimated crowd of around 1,500 people stood in front of the City Council building.

It was here that Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez picked up the banner, holding it high with other individuals, for all to see and hear: “Climate change involves us all”.

Canarian President Gustavo Matos made it clear that he was fully aware of the planet suffering, and had suffered

enough, saying: “We can no longer ignore the problem.”

Inside the Town Hall, there was also a minute’s silence in aid of climate change, as well as bringing awareness of the carbon footprint on Tenerife.

The impact of the demonstration was spread across TV screens worldwide on social media, and one person in particular, Greta Thunberg, was surprised by the movement.

She witnessed photos and footage of individuals, sharing positive attitudes through adrenaline-filled demonstrations, and she also shared images of the thousands of individuals in La Laguna on Twitter.

PLANS to privatise Tenerife’s three publicly-owned casinos appear to have been abandoned, following a change in the island’s Cabildo government.

The news was welcomed by the left-wing Podemos party and the Spanish General Worker’s Union (UGT), who have opposed the decision to sell Casino Playa de las Americas, Casino Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Casino Puerto de la Cruz, since it was first announced.

“UGT Canarias regrets that the previous Government, led by Carlos Alonso, wasted time and public resources in pursuit of this privatisation agenda,” said Agustín Melián, Works Council President of Casinos de Tenerife.

María José Belda, head of Sí Podemos Canarias, also lauded the cancellation, saying: “It’s a victory and great news for the 150plus Casinos de Tenerife employees (and their families), who can retain their jobs in a publicly-owned company which is, and will continue to be, extremely profitable.”

Early in September, Aarón Afonso, Island Director of Co-ordination, and Assistant to the Council President, revealed that just one company had made a bid for the casinos.

Last November, it had been reported that Global Casino Technology Corporation, Pama e Hijos, Olympic Entertainment Group and Automáticos CanariasGrupo Orenes, had applied to tender for the properties.

“The political decision needs to be taken, whether the divestiture continues or not,” said Afonso.

A week prior to this, it was confirmed that the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office had filed a complaint with Tenerife’s Senior Court, requesting an investigation of Gildo Hernández, Director of Casinos de Tenerife.

Have the sales of casinos been ditched again?

The prosecutor is, reportedly, looking to see if there is sufficient basis to make a charge of malfeasance (wrong-doing) and misappropriation of public funds.

The complaint makes reference to irregularities found in audits of the three casinos, from 2012 to 2014, along with certain, outstanding questions relating to the awarding of contracts to suppliers and other contractors, and the acquisition of assets, unrelated to the business.

It isn’t the first time these allegations have materialised.

Podemos Councillor Julio Concepción filed a complaint previously with the Commission for Government Transparency in the Canary Islands, in protest at Tenerife Cabildo’s refusal to release documents regarding the casinos’ administration in July 2018.

“The failure to deliver the requested files obstructs an

independent audit… and these documents are key to clarifying matters related to the ruinous management of Casinos Públicos de Tenerife,” he said.

Concepción also drew attention to what he characterised as serious anomalies in the venues’ accounts, revealed in the 2012 to 2014 audits.

Describing them as “impermissible in public companies”, he argued that they had affected the financial management of the casinos negatively, and had also impacted on staffing.

In a similar vein, the UGT alleged that many unrelated public works had been charged to Casinos de Tenerife, explaining the company’s losses in recent years. “The casinos generate profits annually, and their privatisation is not justified under any circumstances,” argued the union. Another

key point of contention, for both Podemos and the UGT, was the asking price for the properties.

“The Council previously put one of the casinos up for sale for €20m and now they’re selling three for €24m,” said Melián.

The union commissioned its own financial report on the properties, valuing them at €43.7m.

Carlos Alonso, former Tenerife Cabildo President, was the chief architect of the sale, which marked the culmination of the regional government’s Plan for the Restructuring and Streamlining of the Public Enterprise Sector, first approved in March 2012.

However, a contentious change of government this July, which saw the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) under Pedro Martín Domínguez, take power in a coalition with the Ciudadanos party, put the

sale plans under renewed scrutiny.

News that the Cabildo was prepared to take a fresh look at the sale plans met with strong criticism from the regionalist Canarian Coalition (CC) party at the start of September.

In a strongly-worded statement, the CC decried the decision as illogical, claiming it was simply intended to win the support of three Podemos councillors.

“We’ve previously warned that the Council was going to be held hostage by the farleft, and its populist politics,” the party asserted.

“It’s incongruous that the PSOE should decide to revisit the decision to sell the casinos, when they themselves formed part of it, given that they have participated in government for the past eight years.

“Taking this into account, it’s nonsensical that they should claim they are not in agreement with the decision, in light of the fact that they had already approved it.”

A previous proposal to privatise the island’s casinos was unveiled in May 2013, when Alonso was serving as Tourism Minister.

While the Cabildo moved forward with these plans in 2014, holding a licence tender for Casino Playa de Las Americas, the property failed to attract any bidders, and, similarly, the sale met with strong resistance from opposition politicians and union officials.

Drug-traffickers imprisoned, despite saving Guardia men

Cars torched in a pay-back revenge

A FOUR-MAN team of drug-traffickers, who rescued three chasing Guardia Civil officers after they had fallen overboard from their patrol boat when their vessels collided, have been locked up without bail.

A Torremolinos court ordered that the men, accused of a crime against public health, belonging to a criminal group and of causing damages and injuries, be held indefinitely ahead of their trial.

After the collision, off the coast of Mijas, the patrol boat was out of control and began circling, almost crashing into the other craft.

The crew of a Malaga Air Unit helicopter, following the chase, ordered the smugglers to help the trio. And, following the unwritten laws of the seas, they came to the agents’ rescue.

No one was harmed, but the four traffickers were arrested after authorities recovered more than 80 bundles of hashish, weighing more than three tonnes. The fact that they rescued the policemen did not help their cause!

Hooded robbers unable to scare pharmacy staff

OFFICERS from the National Police are investigating an arson attack which happened on Wednesday night, when two cars were set alight, supposedly by an unknown person.

They were parked up in a busy, touristic area of Costa

Adeje, and the blaze was reported at around 3am at Calle Lisboa, in the El Madroñal vicinity, to the left of Gran Sur. A caller phoned the emergency services requesting assistance because of the fires, and National Police, Local Police and the Las Chafiras Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene, where they saw a BMW and a Mini ablaze.

Fire-fighters began extinguishing the flames, while

the officers began with their inquiries, and it soon became apparent that both vehicles were owned by members of the same family.

By now, the cars were burnt out and parked on opposite sides of the road, with little distance between them. Investigating officers believe they were set alight in a score-settling revenge bid.

They are working alongside forensics, and are collecting evidence to build up a case.

47.45kg of the tobacco, which was seized by Border Force officers.

The HMRC investigators discovered that the man had smuggled 47.5 kilos on two other occasions last year, following his cruise holidays, during which he purchased the illegal tobacco.

Zoe Ellerbeck, Assistant Director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said: “This is a case of pure greed. Wareing saw an opportunity to make money fraudulently, and then used the cash to pay for his holidays.”

In interviews, Wareing compared himself with Robin Hood “giving to the poor” when, actually, he made a substantial sum of money by selling the illegal tobacco to friends and family.

“Tobacco-smuggling steals money from public services, and undermines honest shop-owners who pay their taxes,” said Ellerbeck. “I urge anyone with information about tobacco-smuggling, or any other type of fraud, to contact us online, or call our Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887.”

Wareing, of Hornby Court, Blackburn, admitted at Southampton Magistrates Court on 5th September that he had evading duty.

He was sentenced at the same court to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, on 7th October. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £115 victim surcharge.

The tobacco was forfeited and will be destroyed.

Customs stub out tobacco smuggler STAFF at a La Laguna pharmacy, in Avenida Los Menceyes, reported an attempted robbery with attempted violence, by two hooded men on Tuesday, between 10-1lam. But it amounted to nothing!

Images recorded on the shop’s security camera showed the pair entering the establishment, wearing hooded jackets, and displaying a knife in a threatening manner.

They tried to intimidate customers inside the shop, who were waiting in line to be served by the pharmacist, to no avail.

And surveillance footage taken from the camera showed a brave member of staff approaching the villains in attempt to calm the situation.

That seemed to do the trick because National Police said the entire incident lasted just two minutes or so, and the would-be thieves left empty-handed. Officers are still investigating the case.

A PENSIONER aged 72, who enjoyed luxury cruises to the Canary Islands and the Caribbean, appeared in court after being caught smuggling almost 100kg of tobacco back to his UK home.

An investigation by HM Revenue and Customs found that Paul Wareing had evaded paying £21,628 duty, by smuggling the handrolling tobacco (HRT) on three occasions.

Life for evil stepmum, who killed stepson, 8 AN evil stepmother, who murdered an eight-year-old boy last year, has been given life without the possibility of parole, which makes her the first woman in Spain to receive such a sentence.

A jury in Almeria last month found Ana Julia Quezada guilty of murdering Gabriel Cruz, the son of her partner, Angel Cruz. And the court has now sentenced her to 25 years behind bars, with no chance of early release, which is the stiffest punishment possible under Spanish law.

Quezada surprised little Gabriel while he was on his way to play with friends near his grandmother’s Nijar house, in the Almeria province, on 27th February last year.

The eight-year-old’s stepmother convinced him to get into her car, saying she needed help painting a house on a nearby family estate, which she and the boy’s father had been renovating.

But once they arrived, the court heard how she “grabbed the innocent and trusting boy and beat him violently and repeatedly”.

Medical experts testified that he was alive for up to 90 minutes after being savagely beaten.

But Quezada “covered his nose and mouth with her hands until he died from asphyxiation”.

According to prosecutors, Quezada then dug a grave with a spade she had brought to the property days earlier, and dumped Gabriel’s body inside.

However, when his left arm would not fit, she tried to cut it off with a hatchet. But she was not strong enough, managing only to break the

bones. The twisted killer, from the Dominican Republic, then played the part of the worried stepmother when Gabriel was reported missing later that day.

She cried for the cameras and let police roll out the biggest search in Spanish history.

Thousands volunteered to help find him, all the while knowing he was dead and buried.

But investigators, who did not believe her grief-stricken act, decided quickly decided to have her followed. After 12 days, she led them to the body, unwittingly, when she decided to move the corpse into her car boot. She was ambushed as she drove away, and later confessed to her heinous crime.

The court also ordered her to pay €250,000 each, to the boy’s mother and father, for “psychological damages”, as well as €200,203 to the Spanish state to cover the costs of the search for the child.

“Psychopaths should be locked away, far from society, so they can’t hurt anyone,” the boy’s father told reporters last month, after the jury found her guilty.

HAYS Travel, Britain’s biggest independent travel agent, is buying all 555 Thomas Cook branches, in a move which could save up to 2,500 jobs across the UK. The thriving company, based in Sunderland, has announced that it is purchasing the shops from the Official Receiver, appointed after last month’s dramatic collapse of Thomas Cook. And owner John Hays plans to reopen and rename the shops as soon as possible.

He has already offered jobs to 600 former Thomas Cook staff and plans to hire more as part of the company’s expansion plans.

The firm, set-up by John and his wife in 1979, already has 190 travel shops across the UK, and a delighted John said: “It is a gamechanger for us, and for the industry, which will get to keep some of its most talented people. It almost

Spain completes promise of a Thomas Cook repatriation MORE than 33,400 British tourists in Spain, stranded by the Thomas Cook collapse, were all flown home by last Sunday, the last day of “Operation Matterhorn”.

It was the UK’s biggest repatriation exercise since World War II, according to José Luis Ábalos, the UK Government’s Public Works and Transport Minister.

Abalos congratulated his own Government for their “rapid reaction” to the 178-year-old tour operator’s dramatic, overnight crash.

Ábalos said the new bill of law, covering measures to protect Spanish tourism businesses in the wake of Thomas Cook’s sudden closure, would be brought to the table today (Friday) at the next Council of Ministers.

A total of 13 steps include extending the 50% Social Se-

curity contribution discounts in the sector to run from October to March inclusive, providing incentives for firms to offer permanent, year-round jobs, and financial help for companies, such as hotels, who have suffered major losses through not being paid by the British tour operator.

Reductions in, and exemptions from, airport tax for certain routes and carriers are on the cards to encourage more flights to Spain, to fill the gap left by Thomas Cook, as well as extra funding to shore up and promote the tourism industry.

Tourism bosses are also heading for South Korea to try to stimulate a new national market for Spain’s holiday industry, and help reduce its dependence upon the UK and Germany.

While these remain healthy, and Britain continues to be the largest output country for tourists travelling to Spain, despite numbers having dropped since the Brexit referendum, the Ministry, led

by Reyes Maroto, wants to diversify the country’s portfolio. Ábalos is currently in Dubai, attending the 26th annual World Roads Congress, and to support Spanish businesses which have invested in the United Arab Emirates.

headquarters, with the rest in branches across the UK. The company has asked on social media for former Thomas Cook staff to come forward, and said it was aiming to reopen the stores as soon as possible.

The UK Government’s Business Secretary, Andrea Leadsom, told the BBC: “I hope the deal will provide significant re-employment opportunities for former Thomas Cook employees, alongside the advice and support we will continue to provide, to help people find a new job as quickly as possible.”

A YOUNG man, convicted of rape last year, is facing an eightyear prison sentence, and a sixyear tagged probation, after a judge and jury learned of the horrific events which occurred at a nightclub in Veronicas.

The incident happened last September in the Las Americas strip, inside the club where the man worked as a maintenance worker, as well as providing customer services inside the bathrooms.

The victim gave the court a detailed account about her assault, when she entered this particular bathroom to use the toilet.

She was pushed into the cubicle by the man, who then pinned her inside with his hands over her face, and attacked her, sexually and aggressively.

As well as the prison sentence the convicted rapist received, he was also ordered to pay €25,000 damages to his victim.

Spain will boast its biggest arena of all

Dead dolphins puzzle MORE than 100 dolphins have died, mysteriously, on a beach in the Cape Verde islands, off West Africa.

Local media reported that around 200 melon-headed dolphins were found on a beach on Boa Vista island.

Officials, residents and tourists were able to drag some of them back out to sea, but many returned.

BIOS Cape Verde, a voluntary

environmental association in the former Portuguese colony, said on its Facebook page that it took samples from 50 dolphins, while four others were placed in deep-freeze by the local council.

The group said veterinarians from the University of Las Palmas in Spain’s Canary Islands would be performing tests.

Grieving parents blame baby’s death on doctor

A BILLIONAIRE plans to build Spain’s biggestever entertainment arena, near the Costa Blanca, in a bid to attract mega-stars such as Beyonce, Ed Sheeran and Elton John.

The multi-purpose Valencia Arena will occupy 21,500sq/m of land, with an 18,600 crowd capacity for concerts and 15,000 for

basketball matches. It will cost some €220 million, and construction, expected to begin next summer, should be completed in 2023.

The project is led by Spanish entrepreneur Juan Roig and his holding company, Licampa 1617, and the arena’s capacity will surpass that of Madrid’s WiZink Centre (15,500), which has welcomed the likes of Queen, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Ed Sheeran and Beyonce over the years.

The Valencia project

has been described as a “personal and altruistic initiative” for Juan Roig, who is President of Mercadona, Spain’s most successful supermarket.

“The aim is to give Valencia a multi-use space, which will position the city and the wider region as a worldclass destination for national and international sporting, cultural and entertainment events,” said Roig.

The arena is being designed by sporting architects Hok and Valencia-based firm Erre.

THE grief-stricken parents of a baby boy, who died in February, are taking the hospital to court after doctors administered more than 10 times the medication he needed.

The nine-month old had just survived a heart transplant in Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon Hospital, when doctors made the fatal error.

This week his parents, who filed a complaint of manslaughter with a court in the capital, are being represented by the Patient Advocate group.

The baby received the surgery last November and was recovering this February, when he needed 100 milligrams

of mycophenolate, an immunosuppressive drug used on transplant patients. However, doctors mistakenly gave the child more than 1,000 milligrams.

As recorded in the medical records, the baby died days later from intestinal necrosis, despite doctors trying to reverse the overdose effects.

The court will now investigate whether it was the doctor who prescribed the wrong dosage, or the nurse who simply administered too much.

Lawyers for the family said: “It is wrong that the hospital has not even provided psychological help, to assist them getting over the ordeal.”

Salt carrying risks similar to tobacco MEDICAL experts are warning that salt sold in supermarkets should carry graphic health warnings, such as those on tobacco packets.

The move is vital, they say, because up to 85% of Spanish children are eating too much salt, according to research.

Yet scientists from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and World Hypertension League (WHL) believe that many countries, including Spain, are not aware of the dangers.

While most countries have sodium information on the labels of processed food, these are often difficult for people to interpret, and fail to warn of any health risk.

Excess salt consumption is estimated to have caused more than three million deaths a year, from strokes and heart disease. And the WHO has now set countries a target of reducing sodium intake some 30% by 2025.

the WHL, said: “Governments and the food industry have been working together to reduce salt in processed foods.

However, urgent measures must now be taken to sensitise consumers to these dangers.”

He added: “Although many countries have begun to consider a variety of public health measures, to encourage people to eat less salt, we do not know of any requiring salt containers

to have warning labels.”

Jacqui Webster, of the WHO, said: “Eating too much salt increases people’s blood pressure, which is one of the main contributors to premature death.”

Research published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that 85% of Spanish children eat too much salt.

And the majority of this is from processed and fast food, with only 20% to 25% coming from table salt.

BETTY Guinness, a stalwart Brit who turned 100 this year, was mugged from behind by another woman, as she rode home on her mobility scooter in Javea, on Spain’s Costa Blanca.

She had met with friends earlier, for coffee on Saturday 28th September. The aggressor tried to pull Betty off her scooter before snatching her bag and running off to a getaway car.

Betty was unhurt, yet shaken by the brazen attack in broad daylight. But she is determined to keep riding her scooter because, she said: “It is my freedom pass.”

Betty, a much-loved pensioner

in the area, added: “Many thanks for all the kind and thoughtful people who have written to me. I am so lucky.”

Unfortunately, she had to fork out €154 for a replacement phone, while a new garage zapper will cost €50, according to voluntary group Javea U3A’s communications officer Ian Rogerson.

He said Betty was awarded a lifetime membership to the organisation, on reaching 100.

She also received a certificate of merit, on behalf of Javea Mayor José Chulvi.

Ian added: “The committee of the U3A have sent their good wishes following her ordeal, and have issued a warning to members to be on their alert for such heartless attacks.”

Betty has served a denuncia to the police, but no witnesses have yet come forward.

UK political drama inspires sterling volatility

Latest currency news Over the last fortnight, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has been fluctuating between €1.11 €1.12, as Brexit headlines drive demand.

The EUR/GBP exchange rate, meanwhile, edged up from £0.89 to £0.88, while GBP/ USD drifted from 1.24 to 1.22.

What’s been happening?

While sterling initially reacted positively to Boris Johnson’s Brexit proposal, the Irishborder issue remained contentious.

The pound quickly gave up gains, as EU officials showed little enthusiasm for Johnson’s “final offer”.

However, GBP/EUR losses

were limited, as the German composite PMI sank further into contraction territory in September, undermining support for the euro.

Investors were disappointed to find that the composite index slid to 48.5 last month, fuelled by a continued deterioration in the health of the manufacturing sector.

This latest underperforming German release raised concerns that the Eurozone’s powerhouse economy

remains on track, to enter a technical recession in the third quarter.

Another poor month of factory orders added to this bearishness, with slowing global-trade conditions putting further pressure on the German economy.

What do you need to look out for?

French President Emmanuel Macron has given Boris Johnson until the end of the week to overhaul his plan.

It would take positive Brexit headlines to dispel no-deal Brexit concerns, and return the pound to a firmer footing.

However, sterling could also be pressured lower by domestic data, with the UK’s GDP figure for August expected to show a decline in output.

A widening of the UK trade deficit could also see the pound fall further out of favour, this week, given the lack of clarity surrounding

the UK’s future trade relationships. The euro is also likely to feel the heat, this week.

We’ve already seen the publication of poor German factory data, and a decline in the Eurozone’s Sentix consumer-confidence index.

EUR exchange rates could be pressured lower, if the rest of the week’s data supports the case for further easing from the European Central Bank (ECB). The US dollar, on the other hand, will be reactive to global risk appetite, and Federal Reserve rate cut speculation.

Big-spending Euro Bank brings breath of fresh air THE European Investment Bank (EIB), under the Cleaner Transport Facility, has provided almost €200m since 2017 to cut the polluting emissions produced by buses in Spain’s largest cities.

This joint EIB-European Commission financing instrument, enables cities such as Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Barcelona, Valencia and Palma de Mallorca to swap their older, more polluting diesel buses, for new hybrid, electric or latest-generation, compressed, natural-gas replacements.

In Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, the programme has helped develop a

rapid transit system, with new dedicated roadways.

It has also put 17 new, environmentally-friendly buses on the roads, complete with new stops and stations.

In Mallorca capital Palma, EIB is replacing 180 diesel buses with new, compressed natural-gas alternatives, which are also longer, to provide an improved service.

Valencia’s urban bus fleet will be renewed, with 200 hybrids replacing diesel vehicles over 20 years old, cutting the greenhouse gas emissions of the city’s buses by up to 35%.

Barcelona also took part in this programme to acquire 254 fewer polluting buses, which are considered safer and more modern.

In addition to the financing so far, the EIB has approved

the provision of more funds to support clean-transport projects in other Spanish cities. The whole scheme will also help create thousands of jobs, in relation to building new buses, as well as during the implementation phases.

Emma Navarro, the EIB VicePresident, said: “We are happy to support projects such as those financed under this programme, which also improves the air quality of our cities, while generating economic growth and jobs.

“This is an example of the EIB’s commitment to facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy in Spain, and across Europe.

As we announced, at the recent UN Climate Action Summit, we are aiming to redouble our efforts and expand the resources we dedicate to tackling

climate change and other environmental objectives.

It represents a key step in consolidating the EIB’s position as the EU climate bank.”

European Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete said: “In order to succeed in the transition, to a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate by 2050, all sectors and all services need to pull in the same direction.

“Transport represents almost a quarter of Europe’s greenhouse gas-emissions, which is the main cause of air pollution in cities. Major investments are needed to tackle these emissions, and the implementation of this programme is a model example of how EIB investments drive the clean-energy transition in the transport sector, directly improving the quality of life for Europeans.”

The Grammy award-winner who has worked with the likes of Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse, opens the doors to his studio, inviting viewers in to witness the musical process to many of his biggest hits and reminisces on his musical relationship with Amy Winehouse. The 75 minute documentary delves into his early career, following Ronson as a DJ at 19 through the highs and lows of his career.

Featuring interviews with the likes of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, who talk through the process of making Shallow which went on to win Best Original Song at The Oscars for the film A Star Is Born, as well as chats with Boy George, Rashida Jones, Zane Lowe, Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) as well as other big names in the music and entertainment industry.

Mark Ronson: From The Heart joins the likes of Ariana Grande, Harry Styles and Adele who have also been the subject of their own shows for the BBC.

Exposure: Predator Police Uncovered This new documentary in ITV’s awardwinning Exposure current affairs strand uncovers widespread sexual abuse by police officers of female victims of crime.

Across England and Wales, a police or community support officer is convicted or dismissed for sexual misconduct every five days. This programme talks to women who have been victims of predatory police officers, speaking out about their ordeals.

Despite strict rules governing how officers deal with victims of crime, hundreds of officers have ignored those rules and used their positions of power to abuse the very women they have been sent to help - including victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and stalking.

Exposure has discovered some police forces fail to properly vet their staff for the job, while some have failed to listen to women who have been targeted.

Reporter Robin Aitken speaks to senior police officials to find out what’s stopping forces from rooting out predatory policeman, and why the size of the problem has remained hidden for so long.

The Channel Tunnel Life On The Inside

Doing things at the double is key to the Channel Tunnel’s success.

Two countries built it. There are two terminals.

And there’s duplication at both ends.

In the second episode in this four-part series, we’ll see how teams of two work on both sides of the channel to keep tourists and truckers moving.

How will preparations for Brexit affect such a well-oiled system? How will the freight teams cope when car drivers end up in the wrong lanes? And how do French cakes help the UK teams handle the chaos that ensues when trucks collide with trains?

We’ll also find out why two tunnels are better than one.

And, although water and electricity are never a great combination, we’ll be with the catenary team every step of the way as they fix the 25,000 volt cables in the ‘wet area’ of the tunnel.

We’ll also get a driver’s eye view of the giant crossover doors that link one tunnel to another in the biggest undersea cave ever built. And we’ll meet Maurice, the charismatic tunnel travelling bulldog.

He’ll see how cars are driven off and on vast vessels at speed, look at the exhaustive checks that BMW cars must go through before they reach their owner and get on board a tug boat that’s used to gently guide ships safely into the port.

He’ll also learn how to pilot the enormous ships that bring cars to and from our shores, in a scale model of the real thing.

Cherry (pictured) visits Toyota in Derbyshire to see how they turn millions of imported parts a day into shiny new cars - and is amazed to learn that all the components arrive less than four hours before they are needed. If there is major traffic or border delays, the whole production can grind to a halt!

Next, she sees how the iconic London taxi is designed and tested, with passenger doors being opened and closed over a million times before they are ready for market. Finally, she visits the grand headquarters of Norton Motorcycles, a British manufacturer that is cashing in on Britain’s great reputation for craftsmanship, exporting 80 percent of their bikes.

Woman gave partner’s head in Tiny tot stabbed to death a box to a friend to look after But cleaner believes she threw away dead man’s body, in bits A CLEANER has informed police of her fears that she might have disposed of a man’s body without realising, and her boss, 61-year-old Carmen Merino, is being investigated by police, on suspicion of murder.

The cleaner, when interviewed by police, recalled how Merino asked her to come to the home in Castro Urdiales, Cantabria, for a shift, despite not working for the woman for a long time.

She said she was told to bring her car and park it in her building, and, on arrival, she found several bin bags, big, black and heavy, sitting by the front door. Once she had cleaned the house, Merino ordered her to take the bags in her car and dump them wherever she could.

now believe, could have contained the severed remains of Merino’s former partner.

The incident occurred a week after the grisly discovery of his head in a box, which Merino had given to a friend for “safe-keeping” in March.

She told her friend that it contained sex toys, and that she would be embarrassed if people found out.

However, when a bad smell emanated from the box, the friend, from Sevilla, decided to open it, only to see the severed head, which shocked her deeply.

Police are now looking for the rest of the man’s remains

in the Meruelo rubbish dump, which is one of the biggest in Cantabria. But they are not hopeful of finding the body.

Tests have confirmed that the severed head belonged to Baranda, and that it had signs of having been “manipulated… possibly burned”.

One theory is that Merino baked the head before storing it in the box, in the belief that it wouldn’t smell. Tests are ongoing to determine the cause of her former partner’s death.

Merino is being held in custody on suspicion of murder, while the motive of the crime remains a mystery.

A TINY baby boy, aged just three weeks, died after being stabbed at home with his mother in Wallsend, Newcastle, on Wednesday, 2nd October.

Emergency services were called to the Portland Close property, where they found a 21-year-old woman and her child, suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Both were rushed to hospital and the baby remained in a critical condition for several days. Medics said he was given round-the-clock care, but, despite the staff’s best efforts, he died last Friday.

Emergency services, including police, arrived at the scene at around 2.15pm, and officers arrested 27-yearold Denis Erdinch Beytula on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Both mother and child were said to have suffered injuries from a “bladed article”.

Scammer who made millions, still popular with his victims A WELL-KNOWN Fuengirola insurance agent, known only as AJCD, scammed pensioners, footballers, businessmen and heirs out of millions of euros, as well as defrauding at least 48 people out of their savings on the Costa del Sol.

Finally, he has been sentenced to six years in prison after committing the crimes. But two of the victims died while awaiting justice for the fraudster, who promised them high, short-term returns while working for the reputable Groupama firm in 2009.

But instead of going into healthy investments, all their money was plundered into a pyramid scheme.

Now though, a decade later, the man responsible, whose identity is being kept secret, has been sentenced to six years for committing crimes of fraud and falsifying documents.

He must also pay compensation to his 48 victims to the tune of just over €5.6m, with an added 4.8% interest.

But, as he will be unlikely to cough up the cash, the company which took over Groupama, Plus Ultra, will, almost certainly, be forced to repay it.

That’s according to lawyer Patricia Jimenez, from the Martinez Echevarria company, which represented 24 of the victims. Unsurprisingly, though, Groupama has appealed the decision.

The ruling said AJCD had orchestrated a pyramid scheme by taking

advantage of the confidence he inspired in his clients, personally, and also the prestige of the Groupama brand, whose seal appeared on all the documents signed by the victims.

One of them described him as “a true snake charmer”, to the position that when the pyramid scheme began to collapse and interest payments failed, there were customers who came to his office fuming, then left, “half-an-hour later, smiling, having taken out another policy”.

Patricia Jimenez told Diario Sur: “The victims themselves continue to speak well of him; they do not consider him a bad person. One of the victims lent him €200 during the trial, before dying, unfortunately.”

But the scammer, a success in his own right, was frequently taken on trips to exotic destinations such as Bali or the Bahamas, with the directors of the insurer, as a reward for his excellent results.

He treated his victims well, including one from Bilbao, whom he put on a plane to Malaga… before squandering €1.5m of his savings.

Essex knife man charged with murder of three men

A 32-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with a triple murder

by Essex Police, who have also named the three men stabbed to death in a targeted and isolated attack.

The victims were 35-year-old Danny Gibson, his brother Jason, 31, and Richard Booth, 35, all from Colchester, Essex.

They were each stabbed multiple times last weekend by another Colchester man, Tom Saunders, who was arrested on Sunday and charged in the early hours of Tuesday with three counts

of murder. Police said the suspect and victims were well-known to each other, but they did not believe the killings were linked to any gang-related crime or drug use. The victims were found dead when officers were called to the scene.

Colourful parakeets are menace to capital city, and they will have to go

MADRID authorities are planning to cull nearly 12,000 invasive parakeets, which are threatening the city’s ecosystem. It will cost around €100,000, and will reduce the birds’ numbers, which have jumped 33% in three years.

Madrid City Hall has announced a plan to hunt and cull the majority of the monk parakeets in the Spanish capital, because, it is believed, they are a threat to safety and biodiversity.

The local government, which is run by a coalition between the conservative Popular Party (PP) and centre-right Ciudadanos (Citizens), with the support of far-right Vox, will also sterilise the eggs of this invasive, aggressive species, which is affecting native birds such as sparrows.

The PP’s Borja Carabante, head of Environment

and Mobility at City Hall, announced the scheme during a visit to the Casa de Campo, which is a sprawling, public park west of the city, and one of the areas most affected by the parakeets.

The plan should be carried out in autumn next year, and will cost between €6 and €8 per parakeet, leaving a total bill of around €100,000.

The small, bright-green bird, also known as the Quaker parrot, can live up to 20 years in captivity, and it reproduces rapidly, producing six to eight eggs a year.

But along with making unpleasant, screeching

noises, the colourful birds transmit diseases to other birds, as well as eating their food and pushing out other species.

Santiago Soria Carreras, who runs the Biodiversity Service at Madrid City Hall, said falling nests had not yet caused any damage to passers-by. But the previous local government received 197 complaints about the birds from residents, between January and August this year.

Soria Carreras added: “The animal adapts well to conditions other than its own.

Mr Duncan managed to push Ireland away, which is when the teenager stabbed him in the heart, the court heard.

CCTV cameras tracked the killer’s movements through the city centre, and the murder weapon was later found.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that Ireland had 17 convictions for 31 offences between 2017 and 2019, including an incident in which he grabbed a knife during a family argument. On another occasion, he threatened a driver with a blade after being challenged about drinking alcohol on the bus.

Mr Duncan’s family said in a statement after his murder: ‘Peter was a kind and caring man, who was always first to help others. He was a devoted father, husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, and loved by all who knew him. His death will leave such a huge hole in our lives and he’ll be deeply missed by us all. He’ll be in our hearts and thoughts every day.”

Ireland, currently in custody, will be sentenced in December, after psychiatric reports are prepared.

Madrid’s cold atmosphere has had no effect on the parakeets because their nests are extremely thick, even though the bird comes from the warm climate of the semitropical rainforest, north of Argentina and south of Brazil.

These nests can weigh up to 200kg, although they are usually between 40-50kgs, said Carabante. “If the nests are made at a height of 15-20 metres, the impact when they fall would be lethal.”

He believes the plan will be carried out in accordance with the animal welfare law, but it has yet to be finalised.

The environmental head says not all the Madrid parakeets will be culled, but feels that a population of up to 600 birds would cause minimal or acceptable damage.

In 2005, monk parakeets numbering 1,000 were documented in Madrid, which, said Soria Carreras, was considered problematic, because the population from this figure

did not decrease by itself.

He added: “The invasive species is also affecting other Spanish cities, such as Barcelona, Málaga and Valencia.”

The monk parakeet invasion dates back to the 1980s and 1990s, when the birds were sold as pets. In 2011, the Agriculture Ministry included the bird on the list of exotic tropical species, but to date, around 200,000 parakeets have arrived in Spain.

“They end up in parks because the owners get tired of them and set them free, or the birds escape,” said Soria Carreras.

“All animal-control hurts, and I’m the first to be hurt.

But we have to understand that it is for the greater good, which is protecting the flora and fauna of Guadarrama National Park.

“We don’t know what could happen if we don’t manage to reduce the population.

But it’s certain that they will push out our fauna, and the possibility of a nest causing a serious accident would be greater.”

Teenager killed lawyer Live Arico News with stolen screwdriver Beautiful Bella YOUNGSTER Ewen Ireland, who stabbed a father to death with a screwdriver he’d stolen from Poundland, can now be named after turning 18.

Ireland, from Newcastle, killed solicitor Peter Duncan, 52, in a targeted attack at a busy shopping centre. The murderer, whose identity could not be revealed by the media when he was still 17 and a juvenile, had a previous history of violence.

Newcastle Crown Court heard how Mr Duncan, an in-house lawyer for a multi-national maritime firm, was on his way home and was, simply, “in the wrong place at the wrong time”.

He crossed paths with Ireland at an entrance to Newcastle’s Eldon Square shopping centre. The solicitor raised his arm to let the teenager past at the doorway, but Ireland flew into a rage, which ended with “family man” Mr Duncan being stabbed in the heart.

He collapsed outside a Greggs establishment in the shopping centre, which was still busy with tea-time shoppers on 14th August.

Ireland, a serial offender, was still 17 and classed as a minor, so his identity could not be reported. Last month, however, having turned 18, he admitted the murder when appearing

AMIGOS de Gillian Banks Charity raises funds to aid the Centro de Dia Guiadyl, Granadilla, helping Tenerife’s underprivileged children with educational and vocational training and support.

The charity has been providing school uniforms for children returning to school, along with schoolbooks to ensure they have everything needed for study at school.

It is also providing school equipment, such as pens, pencils and rulers, etc., to ensure they are no different from any other schoolchild.

The Gillian Banks Charity is also providing sporting activities to ensure the children are getting fresh air and exercise, on a regular basis. And, next month, it will be running a music project in each centre, about recycling clothing, and making a fashion show out of recycled clothes which have been adapted to incorporate lights and sound, to make them “funky and upcycled”, rather than thrown away.

This is a busy time of year for the charity, with the start of a new academic year for pupils, as well as being showtime for visiting performers, who raise money each year for the Amigos.

The academic year began with tennis lessons in Costa del Silencio, with a professional coach for the children from El Fraile’s El Valito centre.

The youngsters have embarked on a year-long programme of training with the coach, to embrace co-ordination skills/aim/ teamwork and fitness levels, as well as enjoying the outdoors, and participating in a sporting activity every week, while learning new skills.

The children, who had a marvellous time, will be back in three weeks to see how the seeds have sprouted, as well as preparing the ground for transplanting.

In other areas it supports, the Gillian Banks charity has restarted the quiz night in Los Cristianos at the Shakespeare bar every week, with Maureen Makinson and her husband putting on an entertaining and enjoyable night.

They raise funds for the charity on a regular basis, to support its activities, as well as its food

appeals and collections.

Venue for the charity’s Gala Dinner on Saturday, 2nd November, has been announced as the Hotel Fantasia, Bahia Principe on Golf del Sur, its new Disneythemed hotel.

The four-course gala dinner will begin with drinks around the Disney Castle, followed by a fabulous four-course dinner with drinks.

On top of a real feast, you will be treated to a live, Disneystyle show, with dancing, live singers and aerial artistes throughout the evening in the Fantasia Theatre, the stage coming out into the audience and among the dining tables.

This will be followed by party band The Magnetics, to finish the evening off on a high.

Meet Kahl Isn’t he cute?

HOW cute is that face? Doesn’t he look like a good boy?

That’s because that is exactly what he is.

For Game of Thrones’ fans, you will know where his name came from.

Kahl’s story didn’t have a happy beginning. One Sunday morning, a few months ago, Fiona was driving up to start her day at K9. As she pulled up she noticed a bag of food and a red blanket outside. As she was getting out of the car, she noticed a little pair of eyes looking at her from behind the bench.

Another abandoned puppy.

She spoke calmly to him, and, within a few seconds, he realised she was there to look after him, and he showered her with kisses and affection. He had been left outside the night before, not even tied up, and just left to wander around. For some reason, he stayed near his blanket. Fiona named him Kahl, and he became loved instantly by everyone at K9.

He was still a puppy, but he was so loving, and trusted everyone who met him. He still is. He has grown now, as puppies do, and is so willing to learn new things.

He has been going to a dogtraining class every week, and

does so well, showing how clever he can be, and how well he can get on with other dogs.

He loves to play and run around, and, for a dog of his age and size, this is what he needs. All the people who come to K9 and meet Kahl have instant smiles on their faces. He is such a sweet boy, and everyone falls in love with him.

He currently shares with an older male dog, Mufasa, who is always a very sweet, obedient boy, and they are well matched. With Kahl being younger, he does demand more play time, but Mufasa remains very patient him, even if he’s not in the mood to play.

He can be easily trained with patience, by the right person who wants to help him learn.

He shows so much love to everyone; can you show him the love he deserves? Come and meet him at K9, any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We really really recommend that you meet him!

TO: Editor Dear Editor, I HAD a terrifying experience when I came to Los Cristianos on holiday with all my family. It was my daughter’s birthday, so I asked the hotel’s receptionist where I could buy a cake.

She told me to walk across from the hotel and down a road where access to cars had been stopped. After walking for about five minutes, four dogs came running from a fence, about 200 metres away. As soon as I saw them, I froze. Two of the dogs went for me and started biting my legs, instantly.

I turned my back on them, and they just kept biting the back of my legs. I was screaming “help, help” in between screaming in pain and fear, and the guy whose dogs they were came out of his hut and shouted at them.

He then walked over to me, casually, while all four dogs surrounded me. Then, when he reached me, he realised what they had done to me and was shouting for someone to help me because there was blood everywhere.

I then rang my family and some of them ran over to me.

The guy was wiping my wounded legs, and another man came over with water. The dogs ran off with the bloodied tissues, but I got myself back to hotel, and, to my horror, the dogs were outside the hotel, as though they were looking for me.

The police arrived and took pictures of my legs, which, by then, had been bandaged.

My brothers followed the police to where the dogs were, and told me they just let the man walk away, with his dogs off the lead. I never heard from him or the dogs again!

The hotel manager has put a complaint into Los Cristianos Council, and he said he would contact me if he hears anything from them.

It was like a horror movie… traumatic! My legs are a mess, yet this was an unprovoked attack by the dogs.

Princess Di’s Bomberos fundraising

Princess Di’s charity bash is a blazing €10,360 success

PRINCESS DI’S, the lively Las Americas bar, handed over a cheque for an astonishing €10,360 to Adeje’s voluntary firemen (Bomberos Voluntarios de Adeje), after their charity fundraising weekend.

Over 30 acts and comperes performed over the two-day spectacular, and not even

last Sunday’s island blackout could dampen the spirits, or halt the entertainment, as performers went acoustic during the power cut!

Joe and Dean were overwhelmed with the support from all the community, as well as the customers, who dug deep to show their respect for such a worthy cause.

After handing over the cheque. Dean said: “Thankyou to the all bars and businesses that donated prizes, the people who made

cakes, brought things to sell, sold raffle tickets, and cooked on the BBQ for hours in the sun.

“To all the acts who gave up their time and entertained us without charging a penny, and the Princess DI’s team, who soldiered on regardless.

“The fire-fighters were amazed with the sum raised, and asked if we could say a big ‘thank-you’ to all for your help and donations. So, to everyone involved… thanks a million!”

HERE he sits, patiently waiting for his day to come for adoption.

Many people pass by the older, bigger dogs, and just want the puppies.

But the older dogs have so much love to give, and their faces light up when you stop to make a fuss of them.

Three quarters of the dogs at the refuge are larger and unwanted, all with a sad tale to tell.

Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife.

We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge.

Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free.

They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please

never let your dog breed. If we all help the dogs in the full refuges, we can make a difference!

Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours.

Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dogfood for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm.

Take a leek at this!

LEEKS belong to the same family as garlic, onions, chives and shallots, but unlike the other family members, they don’t form a bulb.

Not all the vegetable is edible.

The dark, green sheaths at the top can be discarded.

Leeks originated in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. In much of Asia and Europe, people have been growing leeks as food for several thousand years.

WE are trying to keep our clients informed, as much as possible, regarding the exchange of UK licences to Spanish ones, and how Brexit is likely to, or will, affect those who have not yet exchanged their UK licences.

Last week, we posted information on our Facebook page, having been verbally informed of the situation, as seen by the DGT. The DGT has now posted this information, officially, on their web page.

This is in Spanish, and, as many of our clients do not read or speak Spanish, we feel it necessary to inform all readers of the Canarian Weekly of the situation, which, of course, by the time this is printed, may have changed.

If the UK leaves the EU on the 31st October, without a deal, then a UK licence would

Brexit, and UK driving licences cease to be valid for driving in Spain. This has far-reaching implications because it may also affect your insurance.

Although it is the car, not the person, who is insured in Spain, the driver must hold a valid, in-date, driving licence, for the insurance to be valid. The DGT have in place the same conditions at the moment for exchanges, which remain in place until the 31st October, but which will cease to be valid from the 1st November, as the situation regarding Brexit stands.

The protocol in place currently remains the same for exchanges. To exchange an EU-member state licence, a person must be a member of an EU country (i.e. hold an EU passport which the UK citizens currently have, but this MAY change), hold a Residencia in Spain, and present and complete the exchange before the 31st October.

There is, however, a slight change or shift in DGT information, because there is the possibility for what is now called the homologation of one’s licence.

This entails surrendering your

original UK licence before the 31st October, whereby Tráfico would then allow an exchange to be carried out after the deadline. We are currently seeking clarification on this from Tráfico here, so please watch our Facebook page for updates, after this edition has been published.

We have been verbally advised that the police here have been instructed that anyone stopped driving on a UK licence after the 31st October will be fined for not

holding a licence valid for driving in Spain, and Tráfico are stating the same in the emails we receive from them.

Again, we are seeking to have this confirmed locally, as this differs from the information posted on the DGT site.

However, as many will be aware, the situation in the Canary Islands quite often, sometimes wrongly, differs from that on the mainland.

To continue driving without any issue, regardless of the above, an international driver

permit would be required for any British licence holders.

This is obtained from the Post Office in the UK, and is valid for one year, from the date of issue.

Just to clear up any typical Tenerife rumours. If you hold a valid Spanish driving licence, regardless of whether you initially held a UK one, this is valid, and will still continue to be valid. The rumour that any exchanged licences will cease to be valid is just that: a rumour!

CD Tenerife TENERIFE and Extremadura extended their streaks in the league, CDT with their third consecutive defeat at home at the Heliodoro, while the Barça team secured their third win in a week which has taken them from secondbottom of the league to mid-table.

If their losses against Fuenlabrada and Oviedo seemed a little unfair, this one against Extremadura was justified. They looked uncomfortable at times, made a couple of mistakes, and just couldn’t cope with the pressure the visitors exerted.

Tenerife coach López Garai has made changes, leaving out some of the players who started the season brightly.

JON RAHM last weekend defended his Spanish Open title to overtake the record held

by Seve Ballesteros as the quickest Spaniard to reach five European Tour wins. The late, golfing legend achieved his feat in 49 events, while Rahm needed 10 fewer.

The 24-year-old’s second title in the national tournament in as many years was sealed with a five-shot victory over Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Barrika-born Rahm ended on a five-under 66 to finish 22-under, after maintaining his fiveshot lead going into the finale in Madrid last Sunday.

But Extremadura were better and more patient on the day. They absorbed the pressure put on them and had chances of their own.

Then, in the 75th minute their breakthrough came.

The referee had no option but to award a penalty, which Nono took, sending Ortolá the wrong way to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage.

From that point, everything became frantic as Tenerife strived to get a draw. But an extra-time shot from Dani Gomez was the closest they got. And to round off a bad day, Borja Lasso was given a ridiculous red card in the 94th minute, which means he misses tonight’s game (Friday) against Rayo Vallecano.

This defeat leaves Tenerife in familiar position: 16th in the table with just one win in their last five, and needing to get back to the form they started off the season with!

WE are on Week 14 in the League, and apologies for being AWOL for a couple of weeks, all down to various things.

Anyway, we will now bring things up to date.

Let’s start with last Friday’s matches, and two of Division One’s top teams showed how to play darts. Suters 20:30 crew registered an 8-0 home win over Sandys Bandits, and Gaffers pulled off the same scoreline at Loch Inn Bullseyes.

As usual, some of the games could have gone either way, and

great nights were had at both venues. These winning teams are set to meet for a catch-up game soon, and it’ll be a brave man who predicts an 8-0 result for either team!

In the local derby at Pas O Nadas, “International” didn’t really have a home advantage, and the A team kept their impressive, 11-game winning streak going, by recording a 7-1 win. What a campaign they are having!

The Waterfall are getting their act, and their team, together. But they just lost out when Emerald B took the trebles for a 5-3 win.

In another close match, The Pub welcomed Ourplace Playboys, and, partly thanks to a 117 finish from Lee, they managed a hard-

fought 5-3 success. And Sandys Bookie Boys ended up recording a similar win from the visit of Scooter & Chevys A. In Division 2, a brave foursome travelled from Clouseau’s to play at the Emerald Lounge, but after a good night, the spoils went to the home side, by a 7-1 margin.

There was another 8-0 whitewash as Pink Elephant maintained their promotion push when visiting Scooters & Chevys B. In addition, Club Activo had an excellent 7-1 win against visiting Sundowners, as they continue their head-to head battle with Pink Elephant at the top.
