Protesters are blazing mad as non-stop riots continue

Continued from Front

On Wednesday, for the third consecutive night, there were more ugly riots, the most intense so far, combined with firework blazes, as the Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan Police) battled to contain the protesters, leading to a city lockdown as a result. Radical protesters even launched firework rockets at the Mossos’ helicopter, but to no avail. The Catalans’ anger turned to violence because nine democrats and civil society leaders had been imprisoned for several years after organising a 2017 referendum for Calatan independence, which had been banned by the Spanish Government. Catalan President Quim Torra, who condemned the riots as several arrests were made, said: “There is no justification for burning cars or for any vandalism. This has to stop.” Earlier, though, he had stressed: “My Government did not accept a verdict, which was an insult to democracy that showed contempt for Catalan society”. Meanwhile, groups of hooded rebels faced off against the Mossos, the battle taking place against a backdrop of fire, burning cars, hurled stones, acid and Molotov cocktails, much like a war zone, while 80 people

A PASSENGER, queueing at Tenerife South airport for a flight to Dublin, was reported to Spanish police by a witness for arguing with the people he was travelling with, before turning his attention to fellow passengers on the flight. Ryanair had to call on police assistance to subdue the man for, allegedly, being “aggressive and abusive”. The incident took place last Friday evening in the queue for flight FR7123, from Tenerife to the Irish capital, at 7.20pm, reported Dublin Live. A passenger, who witnessed the entire affair, but wished to remain anonymous, said: “At the queue to board the

were receiving treatment in hospital. The start of these nerveracking demos followed Monday’s sentencing of the Catalan leaders to prison, from nine to 13 years, for sedition and misuse of public funds in a failed 2017 independence bid. Within minutes of the ruling, demonstrators poured on to the streets of the Catalan capital, waving flags and blocking traffic over the conviction of the separatist leaders. Much more was to follow! The protests got underway in Barcelona, including one on the city’s main thoroughfare, the Via Laietana, with angry supporters of the Catalan leaders demanding

their release. Crowds also gathered at Plaça San Jaume, the seat of the Catalan government in Barcelona. There were also reports of protesters putting barricades across train tracks and roads. Meanwhile, Democratic Tsunami, a group advocating more active forms of civil disobedience, sent a message to its 150,000 members, urging them to march on Barcelona Airport, some 15km from the city centre. “The time has come to make our voice felt around the world,” read the message. “The goal: stop the activity of Barcelona’s airport.” Torra, flanked by members of the current Catalan

Government, said the Catalans would continue to fight for independence, adding: “Repression will never triumph over dialogue, democracy and selfdetermination.” Video images from the airport showed riot police clashing with protesters, with reports of tear gas being fired inside the terminal. And some Catalonia police were accused of using excessive brutality on protesters. A 22-year-old man lost an eye after being hit by a rubber bullet, and there were other horrific injuries reported during the fierce clashes between police and protesters. At least 170 people are reported to have been injured, after huge crowds of protesters gathered in the streets in the days after the ruling. Shocking footage, posted online, appears to show police ramming rebels with vehicles, an officer throwing an old woman to the ground, as well as a man, already floored, being punched in the face by another officer. Violence also erupted between those on opposite sides of Catalonia’s independence debate, with one video showing a man throwing an elderly lady to the ground, after she had been taunting Catalonians with a Spanish flag. In Barcelona centre, the

Rowdy passenger just couldn’t stop arguing plane, a man got abusive and aggressive to a woman, who appeared to be his partner, and child. He was shouting and was so rude. “He then started threatening to fight with people in the line. He began cursing them and took his top off, because he wanted to fight them. Ryanair ended up calling security and denied him a seat on board.” The passenger/witness added: “At first, he was shouting while on the phone in the queue. The baby, who was about two-years-old, was tired and impatient, and the girl was holding it. He grabbed the child from her and started giving out to

his apparent partner.” The issue became more heated when fellow passengers noticed the ordeal, and began to weigh in on the matter. The witness continued:

“There was a man in front of him in the queue. He looked back but the man shouted at him saying, ‘what are you looking at, you old b******? “Then, two men behind him in the queue started shaking

rebels hurled bottles, flares and fireworks at the Mossos, as well as using fences they had erected outside the Government Delegation in Barcelona… and anything else they could get their hands on. Meanwhile, several roads were blocked. Barcelona’s El Prat Airport also turned into a battleground, and over 100 flights were cancelled on Monday, plus another 45 on Tuesday and more the following day. Chants, including “give us back the prisoners or the streets will be ours”, could also be heard. Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, in support of the Supreme Court judges’ decision, wrote on Twitter: “The Government of Spain respects and abides by the decision of the Spanish Supreme Court, which puts an end to a judicial procedure meeting all requirements of due process, transparency and separation of powers.” Sanchez, who faces another General Election on 10th November, to try to regain his power, added: “Nobody is above the law. In a democracy, nobody is subject to trial for his or her ideas or politics, but, rather, for criminal conduct as provided by the law. In Spain, there are no political prisoners, but some politicians are in prison for violating our democratic laws.”

their heads and tutting at his behavior and he just lost it! He went crazy. He took off his shirt, raised his fists and was shouting, ‘come at me you **** and I’ll give you something to look at’.” The witness added: “Thankfully, Ryanair staff came down and called security, and the man, his partner and child were all denied access to the plane. The man looked to be drunk and was very aggressive. Everyone was even afraid to make eye contact with him.” A Ryanair spokeswoman for Ryanair said: “The boarding staff of the flight FR7123 Tenerife to Dublin (11th Oct) requested police assistance at the boarding gate, after a passenger became disruptive.” She added: “The safety and comfort of our customers, crew and aircraft is our No.1 priority. This is now a matter for local police.”

Here’s how Brexit: Open letter from to become the Foreign Secretary a resident to all UK nationals here of Tenerife By DOMINIC RAAB

IF you are a British national, living in Tenerife and still not registered as resident in Spain, or are unclear about the permanent nature of your status, the Spanish authorities have released a batch of appointments, specifically for the purpose.

They are available through the FOCUS group, the Adeje volunteer lobby group for international residents, and, since all the appointment slots in the South have been allocated, already, these released appointments are all in Santa Cruz. Anyone who has still not sorted out his or her legal residence in Spain, and who meets the criteria for registration (explained here, https://www.janetanscombe.com/ forms-formalities), should email the Focus group at focusadeje@gmail.com, put the words RESIDENCY APPOINTMENT as the subject, explain your specific situation and you will be allocated an appointment. Please note that if you do not speak Spanish, you will need to arrange a translator to accompany you to the appointment. The Focus group cannot deal with any queries by phone because this is simply to allocate appointments. And although the group does, generally, work for Adeje residents, on this occasion they are taking requests for appointments for anyone living in any part of Tenerife. However, you will not receive a reply from Focus. The group will forward your request, directly to the body allocating appointments, which will then contact you very quickly. Importantly, this offer is available until 31st October only.

IN UNDER than a month, the will of the British people will be delivered, and the United Kingdom will leave the European Union. This, of course, will be a time of transition.

But for those living in Spain, I want to assure you that, as Foreign Secretary, I am working to ensure that your rights and access to services remain as strong as ever. From Madrid to Malaga, and Barcelona to Benidorm, 300,000 Britons have made Spain their home. And, no matter what the terms of our departure are from the EU, you will continue to be able to live and work in Spain. But to make sure your daily needs are met, there are some steps you must take to get ready for Brexit on 31st October. You’ll need to register for residency, check your healthcare cover, verify your passport validity online and exchange your UK driving licence for a Spanish one. To check the specific actions you need to take, and stay up to date, go to the Living in Spain Guide at gov.uk/livinginspain In Government, we are doing our bit to get ready for Brexit, too. We are making sure that on 1st November, every British national living in Spain can go on living, working, studying and accessing healthcare. We are working with the Spanish authorities to make processes as smooth and straightforward as possible, whether you’re applying for residency or a new driving licence. And we are working with the Spanish National Health System, SNS, to ensure that tourists, students and European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders will be able to access healthcare in the same way, at least until 31st December 2020. We are working hard to

reach a deal with the EU. But even if the UK leaves without one, the UK and Spain have each taken steps to ensure you will be able to continue accessing healthcare in Spain, exactly as you do now, until at least 31st December 2020 if you are an S1 form holder. Of course, every circumstance is unique. And we know that some British people might need extra support during this transition. We want to support those who may find it harder to complete all the paperwork, such as pensioners or disabled people, those living in remote areas, and those needing assistance with language translation or interpretation. The Foreign Office has allocated an extra £3m for charities and other voluntary organisations to help these people keep their rights and

access to EU services. You should be checking in regularly with the Embassy in Madrid or local consulates in Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, for information on upcoming local ‘question and answer’ sessions, town hall meetings and information stands in supermarkets and on high streets. And, by now, you should also be seeing one of the largest information campaigns in British history, which launched with advice in newspapers and on billboards, encouraging people across the UK and Europe to Get Ready for Brexit. This is an exciting time, but also one of unprecedented change. We’re getting ready for Brexit on 31st October… and I would urge you to do the same!

Re-open Masca Barranco, urges local Mayor Emilio

THE closure of Masca Barranco has resulted in the loss of 70 jobs, and Buenavista del Norte Mayor Emilio Navarro is urging Tenerife Cabildo to re-open the hamlet, which attracts some two million tourists a year.

Although he is against private management, as is the case of Adeje’s Infierno nature reserve, he does not exclude it, if that leads to the Barranco reopening. The closure was blamed on a group of walkers who, despite an orange-level weather alert for heavy rain and strong winds, still decided to tackle the Barranco. Reaching Masca Bay, they found the jetty damaged, with no boats available to take them back to the safety of civilisation. There was also a weather alert for wild seas, which kept the water taxis in harbour. The walkers were fortunate

that a goatherd was seeing out the storm in the area, because they would have had to attempt a walk back up the ravine, possibly resulting in a more tragic end. The goatherd, who advised them to stay put, led the

stranded hikers to a cave, where he knew they’d be safe, sharing some of his food and water. And the following day, the emergency services were able to rescue the walkers from Masca Beach. Hours later, however,

the goatherd spotted more hikers in the ravine. The following week, the authorities announced the closure of Masca Barranco, prohibiting members of the public from entering it until measures were put in place to make it safer.

The new owners, Satyani De Inversiones Group, require a rental back-payment of €11,000. But the Court Deputy said: “This case has many aspects. On the one hand, it is intended to raise the rent, but there is the constitutional right to have a home. “We have opened an exofficio complaint to ask the City of Santa Cruz, and the Canary Institute of Housing, if they know of this situation, and what actions they will carry out to preserve the rights of this person.” The court will reconsider the case in December.

NEWS IN BRIEF Stabbed man critical Taxi drivers in the pink! in hospital care unit

FOR the past week, Isorana taxi drivers in Guía de Isora have been wearing pink T-shirts with the AMATE Association badge, in support of the awareness campaign launched by International Breast Cancer Day. Their campaign ends tomorrow (Saturday), and, says Ángel Hernández, President of the Association of Taxi Drivers of Guía de Isora: "It is about making a disease visible to many people."

Youngster, five, struck by car

A BOY of five suffered hip and leg injuries after being knocked over by a car in Orotava last Sunday, at la Plaza de Construction. The Canarian emergency services were notified immediately and a medical ambulance was sent to the scene, where the minor was assessed. It was soon apparent that he needed hospital treatment. The youngster was taken to a Puerto de la Cruz hospital, while the Guardia Civil made further inquiries regarding the accident.

Man’s house full of weapons

A MAN was arrested by National Police officers and detained, after brandishing a loaded gun in La Linea’s Hospital Comarcal, in the Cadiz region of southern Spain. After the suspect was held, a police search of his San Roque house revealed a stash of hunting knives, crossbows, harpoons, machetes, antique guns and boxes of ammunition. Police detained the man on illegal-weapon charges after he had tried, originally, to hide the gun, which a spokesperson said was “ready for use”. A probe later revealed the weapon was actually a replica, but it had been modified so that it could be used with live ammunition. After the discovery, the Specialised and Violent Crime Unit became involved, granting police two judicial orders to enter the gun enthusiast’s home.

Squatters disrupt shoppers

AROUND 90 squatters are occupying Los Tarajales Shopping Centre, in Los Cristianos, and business owners say they can no longer put up with the situation, for obvious reasons. Their most recent setback occurred at noon on Sunday, when a drunken Romanian threw a table at people in the walkway, which was crowded with tourists and regulars. The police were called, but the squatter was simply charged and released. Arona Council, along with company owners, agree that the guilt stops with the Justices!

A 24-YEAR-OLD man was found with serious stab wounds in Las Galletas last Saturday, and his pal, aged 25, who was with him, was also stabbed. But, fortunately, his wounds were superficial. The incident took place on a busy main street in the coastal town, just before 5.30pm. Earlier that afternoon a hooded man, believed to be 22, was seen vandalising a moped owned by the victim’s sister. He then took a glass bottle

and smashed it against the front door of the victim’s family home, before leaving the vicinity. He was dressed in a red shirt and blue shorts, as seen in the picture. The 24-year-old man, along with his friend, were told that the moped vandaliser, identified by witnesses, was in the nearby Candida Peña Bello Street. The brother, supported by his friend, confronted the 22-year-old and questioned his behaviour. At this point, the suspect took out a knife and began attacking them, violently, leaving the girl’s brother for dead. The attacker, a Spaniard,

had been befriended by the victim, whose sister said he was in need of help. He was invited to the family home on several occasions to eat, and was there most mornings for breakfast. But he was eventually told that the family could no longer support him, and it seems that he turned sour. His victim, from nearby Costa del Silencio, is at present in La Candelaria Hospital’s intensive care unit, after suffering serious wounds to his back, abdomen and ribs. A family member noted that the stab wounds to the chest just missed his lungs, by millimetres!

Disabled mum baffled by flight’s cancellation A DISABLED woman was left stranded in Tenerife with her young daughter, following a lastminute cancellation of their Glasgowbound flight with the FlyLolo airline.

The company confirmed last Thursday night that several flights between the Canary Islands and the Scotland airport were being cancelled over the weekend. More than 900 holidaymakers are believed to have been affected by the sudden announcement, including Maria Wilson, from Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, who had travelled to Tenerife with her 10-year-old daughter to celebrate both their birthdays. The 46-year-old, who has

multiple sclerosis and uses a mobility scooter, was all set to travel home to Glasgow Airport with her daughter, early on the Friday morning, after their two-week holiday. However, the pair were informed by email that their FlyLoLo flight had been cancelled, just hours before they should have been boarding. “We got an email, and that’s all we had; no explanation about flights back; nothing,”

said an angry Ms Wilson, who, was left at Tenerife South Airport with her daughter, fearing they had no way of getting home for days. Despite contacting the travel firm by phone, and by email, Ms Wilson said she received no explanation, and no help from the UK consulate or the Tenerife airport staff. Fortunately, the 46-yearold contacted a friend, who secured them the last two seats on a flight to Edinburgh, in the early hours of Saturday. Maria said: “She managed to get us seats on a flight to Edinburgh, but it will take us another 10 days to get our money back. They just said, ‘Your flight is cancelled’, and no reason why! “We would have been stuck here in Tenerife if we hadn’t got those last two Edinburgh seats, but I’ve still had no explanation about what’s happening.”

Drink-drug flight mother sent to jail for 15 months

A DRUNKEN British mother was jailed for 15 months after screaming “you can’t f****** stop me”, and for exposing herself, on her birthday flight to Fuerteventura from Manchester, where she lives. Natasha Allen, 30, said to have been “out of control” on the journey, and was also described as “loutish and selfindulgent”, forced the plane, carrying 200 people, to land in Faro, Portugal, Manchester Crown Court heard.

The holiday-maker had been travelling with two mates on 12th September last year before she began abusing cabin crew. Staff on the now-defunct Thomas Cook service saw Allen produce a bottle of vodka, half of which she had already drunk in the departure lounge. She began trying to buy softfruit drinks J20s to mix with her spirit, before workers confiscated her alcohol and asked for her passport details. While the drunken traveller was in the toilet, staff allegedly searched her bags for her passport, before she returned and labelled one a “f****** thief”. Evidently, she also accused

staff of spilling a drink on her jogging bottoms, which she pulled down in front of the other passengers. The court heard that Allen had said: “I have had my children taken off me so I will swear if I want to. You can’t f****** stop me.” She eventually returned to her seat, before the pilot had already decided to land the plane in Portugal. She was dragged off the aircraft by Portuguese police, before being summoned to Manchester Crown Court. Judge Hilary Manley said Allen had reached the “end of the line” and added that she was also under the influence of “cannabis”.

Ryanair flies to rescue of an off-course turtle IRISH airline Ryanair has offered to airlift an endangered loggerhead turtle back to the Canaries, after it was swept to Ireland by hurricane-force winds. It was barely alive when it was found on the Galway coast and is around six years old. It was caught up in ferocious Atlantic storms, including Hurricane Dorian, which destroyed the Bahamas. But the reptile has had nearly a month of recuperation, and she is nearly ready to be returned home, via a Ryanair flight. Once she reaches Gran Canaria, she will be checked into the island’s Aquarium Turtle Hospital, before being released

back into the sea. Kevin Flannery, Director of Dingle Oceanworld, told the Irish Daily Mirror: “We have our own Ninja Turtle hero in Michael O’Leary, after he agreed to fly Mara back to the Canaries. He came to the rescue. Flannery said the turtle,

called Mara, is the youngest ever to have had care in their facility. He added: “Mara barely survived. She would have left the Saragossa Sea for the Canaries, and then was pushed up by the Atlantic hurricanes and storms. “Marine animals tend to dive

down deep when there is a hurricane, but turtles have to come up and breathe, and, with her being so young (one foot long, and just as wide), she wouldn’t have had the strength to swim against the wind and the waves. She would have been tossed around. She was in shock and suffering from hypothermia when found.” But while she had a rough journey, she is finally fit to go back into the ocean, thanks to the help of Ryanair. Dingle director Flannery added: “She had put on about a kilo, and she is very active. We’re feeding her fish like squid, but she’ll go straight to the hospital. “More than likely, she’ll be released after a very short period. They have quite a number of turtles there with damage from speed boats.”

Wife let her sick husband die, without medical help A WOMAN aged 56 has been charged by National Police with the manslaughter of her husband, after leaving him for dead when he began suffering a hypoglycaemic attack.

Party mum dumped son, 5

A BEWILDERED fiveyear-old son was left crying, alone on a Cordoba balcony last Sunday, while his selfish mother partied all night with friends.

Police were called to the house, in the Ciudad Jardin neighbourhood of Andalucia, at around 3:30am, after concerned neighbours called the authorities. Officers tried to calm the boy while they waited for fire-fighters to arrive and rescue him from

the balcony. The boy’s mother returned from partying at 7am on Sunday and was informed by neighbours that police had taken her son. He is currently being looked after by family members, while his mother awaits a court appearance.

His wife had, apparently, watched him suffer until he passed away at their La Laguna home in Taco, San Cristobal, before requesting medical assistance. The probe began after police confirmed that the middle-aged man had died from complications of the attack. Suspicions arose when the investigation officers discovered that his wife, who was with him at the time, would have been fully aware of his illness, as well as having certain instructions on what to do if a crisis occurred. The police were even more suspicions because of the time frame, between her husband’s death and when she called for an ambulance. She would have known that a call for immediate help would have saved his life. National Police analysed the glucose in the deceased man’s blood, which proved that he was in a critical state, and unable to request medical help himself. Officers have discovered that only weeks before his death, the wife had taken out several insurance policies. The National Police officers dug deeper into their investigation, and, together with all the collective evidence, the wife was presented before a judge, and is now awaiting a full hearing.

Two stabbed in street brawl TWO people were injured, one seriously, after being stabbed during a street brawl last Saturday night in Gran Canaria. Emergency services were alerted to the incident on Calle Teobaldo Power, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana, shortly before midnight, with reports of a 26-year-old man being stabbed in the neck, and another man, 25, suffering stab wounds in the thigh. Guardia Civil have launched an investigation, in an effort to locate the person responsible for the attack. Both victims are being treated at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria.

Brit woman’s painful fall

FIRE-FIGHTERS were dispatched to Montaña Amarilla, in Costa del Silencio, last Tuesday after a 50-year-old British woman lost her footing and fell into a precarious spot from the mountain, breaking a leg in the process. The firemen were joined by a medical team after an emergency call was received, just before 1pm. They soon found the woman, and, after a quick assessment, she was transferred on to a special stretcher, allowing them to carry her safely to where the ambulance was waiting. The medical team then took charge, making her comfortable before taking her to Hospiten Sur for further treatment. Local Police were also on hand to assist with the emergency.

Police collar island’s dog-fighting groups

THE Alcalá de Henares Prosecutor’s Office, in the Community of Madrid, has requested a joint sentence of 103 years in prison for 22 people, accused of animal abuse and organising dogfights in the Canary Islands and mainland Spain. Eight of the defendants were arrested in Tenerife, where the sentence is much higher, and a joint period of 104 years in prison was asked for, plus a substantial compensation for the expenses of the animal protectors, who took care of the dogs after dismantling the network. Some 226 dogs were rescued, most of them in bad health, but, sadly, 42 died. Among the defendants were two vets and an Adeje Local Police officer. Although the alleged criminal organisation was in Madrid, the investigation showed the weight of the network to be in Tenerife.

Tragic mother dies on holiday

Some €700bn set aside to lift tourism industry

MEGAN Brannan, a 24-year-old mother, died last Monday during a family holiday in Tenerife, having felt ill the previous night. Loved ones put it down to a hangover on Sunday, but she still felt under the weather the following day. Her mother, Margaret, suggested she go for a lie-down, but her father, Thomas, later went in to her room, only to find that his hairdresser daughter had passed away. Megan, who used to live in Tenerife, and worked at the Highlander Bar in Las Americas, had been accompanied by her parents and 11-month-old daughter, Kaedy.

Paedophile took porn shots of his family’s girl, aged 7!

CREDIT schemes of up to €700bn have been approved to help soften the blow to Spain’s tourism industry, following the Thomas Cook collapse in September.

The Spanish Government is offering up to €200bn finance, through the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to attend to immediate economic emergencies in the sector, such as hotels which have not yet been paid for travellers’ trips. A further €500bn has been set aside for companies in the industry to borrow from, to expand, adapt and improve their businesses to make the holiday sector in Spain more competitive, attractive and better equipped. This includes taking on more staff, modernisation, new ideas and lines of trade, as well as “going digital”.

The latter €500bn will be available through the State Finance Fund for Competitiveness in Tourism (FOCIT), administered by the ICO, and linked to the Secretary of State for Tourism. Among the steps included with this release of funds for the industry are direct financial benefits of €15bn and €8bn, respectively, for the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands, which have been the hardest hit by the Thomas Cook collapse. That’s because these islands are among Spain’s most popular package-holiday destinations for UK tourists. “We’re focusing on everyone affected, and very much so, on the workers who lost their jobs after the chain went down,” said Carmen Calvo, Spain’s Acting Deputy President. Ever since the Government found out that Thomas Cook was about to go out of business, and that the UK authorities did not intend to bail it out, ministers have been

analysing “justice measures”, said Sra Calvo, and she has not ruled out launching legal action on behalf of those in Spain who have suffered the most damage. The Spanish Commission of Business Organisations (CEOE) has been brought on board as part of a “combined response to the legitimate defence of interests” of traders and workers. And the Ministries of Justice and of Tourism are working on setting up information and advice for companies owed money. Some of the industry’s extra support and finance is aimed at making it more sustainable as an economy and a job market, focusing heavily on removing the seasonal aspect of it, which is responsible for employment being largely temporary or, if permanent, with long lay-off periods, on the islands and coasts. But, said Sra Calvo: “It is hoped this will be achieved by diversification and digitalisation.”

The shoeshank redemption A MAN aged 54 was charged by National Police with producing and possessing child pornographic material, including one sevenyear-old girl, who was a family member. The officers’ investigations began about a year ago, when they were given several leads about the paedophile, said to have downloaded numerous archives of child pornography. Police followed up the leads, and, finally, when they felt they had enough evidence, the officers followed the pervert and arrested him in the South of Tenerife. Once he was in their custody, the police discovered that he had downloaded an excessive number of files containing sexual images of children, specifically involving young girls between the ages of six and eight. A search of the suspect’s home revealed that he had numerous archives on his computer, with images of minors, and the officers soon recognised the face of a young girl, who had been featured regularly. While proceedings were carried out on the suspect, discreetly, the officers confirmed that the youngster was part of his family. The pervert was taken to Granadilla Courts, where a judge sent him to prison, immediately.

A PRISON inmate has escaped from the City of Justice in Valencia by using nothing more than his shoelace. Pablo

was

already serving a fourmonth jail sentence, for breaking a judicial measure relating to a prior case of sexual violence, when he appeared in a separate trial on charges of crimes against public health for drug-trafficking. After returning to a holding

cell at the Valencian City of Justice court, he made his shoelace into a bow and pushed it through the bars to undo the latch on the outside of the door. A manhunt is now underway after CCTV captured him walking out of the court’s front doors unnoticed.

City star makes a Silva trophy tour in his hometown

DAVID Silva, the quicksilver Manchester City star, returned to his Gran Canaria home with the four football trophies he won last season with the club, to share his success with his family, friends and neighbours, as well as the youngsters of CD Arguineguín. “It is a proud moment for me to be here, with the people of my land, and, hopefully, some of these children can get titles like this in the future, and enjoy them, as I have done, said David. “I really would have loved to have this opportunity as a child, and enjoy an evening like this with any of my idols.” The trophies, League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League Cup and Community Shield were in place from noon, but David arrived at the football ground where he started playing at around 5pm. He was welcomed with a standing ovation and guard of honour, performed by players from the club’s

youngest categories, who wear the footballer’s Academy’s Silva21 logo on their shirts. David had his pictures taken with all of them, along with the trophies won by City last season, and also with the winners of Manchester City kits, signed by him to mark the occasion. But locals and young fans were not the only people present. Fans from around the island made the journey to Arguineguín to share a special moment with their idol, along with many English tourists and City supporters, living or spending their holidays in Gran Canaria,

who took the opportunity to visit Arguineguín, as well as Tenerife’s Official Supporters’ Club, who flew to Gran Canaria to greet David. Before the event, on Friday morning, David took the Premier League, FA Cup and the Carabao Cup to his grandparents’ home, in the port of Arguineguín, where he spent most of his childhood, and where he first played football. The football star also took a moment to take a photo with his grandparents, Doña Antonia and Don Fernando, and his son Mateo. “The street where it all began,” he later posted on Twitter.

We’ll soon be saving cash on water, and electricity!

NEW rules just announced by the EU, and set to come into force in April 2021, will ensure that household appliances will last longer and use less water and electricity. The legislation has been prompted by complaints from consumers across Europe, frustrated by machines that break down when they are just out of warranty, leading to much controversy. Under the EU’s new standards, manufacturers will have to make spare parts, such as door gaskets and thermostats, available for a period of up to 10 years. But the “right to repair” campaigners say the rules do not go far enough, because professionals only, and not consumers, will be able to carry out the repairs. Campaigners say individual consumers should also be allowed to buy spares and mend their own machines. But manufacturers said this

would raise questions about risk and liability. Instead, manufacturers will have to ensure that key parts of the product can be replaced by independent professionals for the period stipulated; 10 years for washing machines and dishwashers; seven years for refrigerators. The new rules are aimed, primarily, at ensuring that appliances have a longer life, but also include provisions to make them more energy efficient, reducing the strain on the environment and saving the consumer up to €150 per year. The environmental issue has been one of the main priorities in this new legislation, as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underlined, saying: “With this legislation, we are striving to reduce the environmental footprint and reduce energy bills for all European Union citizens.”

Six Bulgarian fans arrested for racial abuse of England

BULGARIAN police, who identified 15 fans suspected of being responsible for subjecting black England players to racist abuse, have arrested six of them. The nine not held are under police investigation, with three wanted. England’s 6-0 Euro 2020 qualifier win over Bulgaria in Sofia on Monday was stopped twice in the first half, following racist chanting by home supporters, which led to the resignation of their football chief, Borislav Mikhailov, the following day. Bulgaria manager Krasimir Balakov said after the game:

“I didn’t hear any chanting,” having previously accused England of having “a bigger racism problem”. But Balakov has since posted a statement on Facebook, acknowledging Monday’s incidents and apologising to “English footballers, and to all those who felt offended”. He added: “I condemn all forms of racism as an unacceptable behaviour, that contradicts normal human relations.” Bulgarian legend Hristo Stoichkov became emotional when asked on TV how to prevent a similar occurrence, advocating that “fans are not allowed in the stadium, or even face heavier punishments”. Stoichkov, apparently referring to the five-year European ban, imposed on English club sides after 39 people died at

Heysel Stadium before the start of the 1985 European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus, added: “Like in England for years, five years without going to stadiums. People don’t deserve to suffer.” Meanwhile, the English Football Association and UEFA have both condemned the actions of the section of Bulgaria fans called the “Ultras”. And Aleksander Ceferin, President of the sport’s European governing body, has called for “football families and governments to wage war on the racists”. The FA have also offered full support to England players, following the racist chanting, with counselling being one option open to them. According to Fare, the European anti-discrimination body, some 20 Bulgarian

stewards joined those involved in racist abuse, and far-right activity, after taking off their hi-vis jackets. The Fare spotters in the crowd have included their findings in the report they have handed to UEFA. Fare Executive Director Piara Powar said: “It is common practice in Eastern Europe. They use security from fan groups as they know their own people. That’s the idea, but the idea is not to take off bibs and join in. “Therein lies the problem in some countries. Some of the policing is not fit for purpose, and we have called for UEFA to kick Bulgaria out of the competition.” Meanwhile, England midfielder Jordan Henderson described the behaviour of Bulgaria fans as “disgusting”, after they were warned for

making Nazi salutes and monkey noises. Henderson added: “Obviously, I wasn’t happy with the situation we were in. It wasn’t nice to be involved in and it shouldn’t be happening in 2019.” Team-mate Tyrone Mings, making his international debut on Monday, said he heard racist chanting “clear as day” during the pre-match warm-up in Sofia. A number of players posted on social media following the game, thanking travelling fans for their support, and expressing their pride in the performance, despite the abuse. “Not an easy situation to play in, and not one which should be happening in 2019,” said striker Marcus Rashford. “Proud we rose above it to take three points, but this needs stamping out.”

10% of Spaniards are vegetarian or vegan!

AS many as 10% of Spaniards are opting to cut meat out of their diets, particularly women and young people, according to recent research, and the number is growing. Consultancy firm Lantern’s report, The Green Revolution: Understanding The Veggie Revolution, shows that 0.5% of the Spanish population follows an exclusively vegan diet, with 1.5% vegetarian, without meat or fish. And 7.9% refer to themselves as “flexitarians”, meaning they are basically vegetarian but, very occasionally, eat meat or fish. No figures are available for those who identify as “pescatarian”, who eat fish but not meat, possibly because, until recently, they would have been considered vegetarian. But the definition is now changing, and a “true” vegetarian is said to be someone who does not eat fish, either. In total, including “flexitarians”, those who never, or rarely eat meat, account for 9.9% of the Spanish population, the “never” totalling 2%. During last year, says the Lantern report, meat-free diets increased by 27% in Spain, and nowadays, 817,000 Spaniards do not eat meat at all.

Three main reasons are behind the decision to stop eating meat, or to go completely vegetarian or vegan, says Lantern. One of these is a growing concern about animal welfare, with 84% of those interviewed considering it crucial to improve conditions of farm creatures, offering them a better quality of life, and in a smaller but rising percentage of respondents, being completely against killing animals for food, or for any reason other than entirely humane ones. The second and third main motives for cutting out meat, Lantern reveals, are seeking improved health, in light of ongoing reports of red meat and processed meat increasing the risks of cancer and cardiovascular conditions, along with climate change.

In the case of the latter, the meat industry is one of the causes of greenhouse gas emissions, which trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere and increase the average global temperature. This is leading to a greater incidence of extreme weather conditions, such as droughts, storms, floods, extreme cold, and heatwaves. According to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a balanced diet, based largely on ingredients of vegetable origin, and with a small portion of those of animal origin, produced sustainably and ethically, “offers great opportunities for adaptation and mitigation” of climate change, while “generating major, collateral benefits in terms of human health”.

Perv, 46, said he was 17 to collect images of kids

Police tracked the predator down to Malaga

POLICE in Malaga have arrested a man in his forties, who had been impersonating a 17-year-old boy, in his quest to collect indecent images of children. The 46-year-old created several fake profiles on social media, which he used to contact youngsters aged 11-13. He was caught after a victim in Madrid informed police, whose investigations found that he had contacted at least seven minors. They discovered that he attempted to befriend the youngsters, on social media sites, initially, before asking them for sexual videos of themselves. As part of the operation, police confiscated two hard drives, three telephones and five USB drives from the suspect’s house.

Off-duty Guardia hero Get cashback now with the nails violent shop thief new Liberty Seguros promotion! AN off-duty Guardia Civil officer detained a thug, who had committed two violent robberies using intimidation, as he was trying to escape.

The officer heard several people screaming for help, and promptly went to the rescue, preventing the thief from jumping into a taxi. The events happened last Friday, after the robber had gone into a shop near the African Market, wearing a hood and covering his face. He entered the shop, carrying a screwdriver and syringe, shouting at terrified customers to hand over their belongings, claiming the needle was infected. As well as taking money from the shop, he also managed to extract money from two women before leaving the premises. While the thief was running towards the taxi rank, the officer, who was heading towards Puerto de la Cruz at the time, passed both

woman as they chased after him. To raise attention, the women were shouting: “Thief, thief. That man has robbed us.” The resourceful Guardia officer followed the man, who then decided to hide in the side-streets, as well as behind parked vehicles. But after an eventful chase, the officer grabbed him and read him his rights. The thief then produced the screwdriver and syringe from his pockets, and threatened the officer. The brave Guardia man managed to disarm the man, before restraining him on the ground, Coincidently, another officer spotted what was going on and went over to help him, until further assistance arrived. National Police arrived on the scene and formally arrested the thief. The Guardia hero later learned that the thug had also intimidated another woman, violently, earlier that day. Because of the severity of his crime, he was presented before a judge, who ordered him to prison.

RICHARD Huckle, cited as one of the world’s most prolific paedophiles, was handed 22 life sentences in 2016 for raping up to 200 babies and children in Malaysia. But Huckle, nicknamed the “gap-year paedophile”, was found stabbed to death in his cell at Yorkshire’s Full Sutton Prison on Sunday.

He had pleaded guilty to an unprecedented number of offences, from 2006 to 2014, against children aged between six months and 12 years, and was almost certain to die in prison… but not in this manner! It seems as though horrified cons didn’t take lightly to his crimes, because they put an end to the sicko’s life when they cornered him and stabbed him to death. A police investigation is in place because the situation is still being regarded as murder.

When the mother arrived in the Almerian town of Las Norias de Daza, where the grandmother lived, she approached a woman in the street and asked for her help in getting the boy’s dead body out of the car. Mum strangled son as custody battle loomed

and stopped her at around 10.30am, before arresting her. Shortly after, she confessed to officers that she had murdered her son. The 38-year-old woman was locked in a fierce legal battle with her son’s father about who should look after him. The mother had custody and looked after him Monday to Friday, but an impending decision in the legal battle was likely to revoke that, giving custody of the boy to her son’s father. Neighbours of the woman

described, regularly, seeing the boy left outside until 11pm in the cold, and said she appeared to have a mental illness. She had accused the father of domestic abuse, but he was cleared in March this year. But, following the decision, she began harassing him in an attempt to reignite the relationship. The Guardia Civil and forensics teams spent Thursday afternoon searching her house in Almeria for clues.

It’s time in the market, not timing the market, which reaps rewards By Paul Montague Partner, blevins Franks

GIVEN global, economic uncertainty, you may ask if this is a bad time to invest, but it is not so simple. Generally, the most sensible approach is to invest for the longterm, rather than wait on the side-lines for the “right time”. The risks of trying to time the market It is impossible to consistently predict market movements; even experienced investors cannot always get this right. There is also the risk of missing out, as certain days in a market cycle can make a significant difference to returns. For example, if you had invested £10,000 in the

ACCORDING to the New Green Deal, electric cars will soon replace gas-powered, combustion engines, and they are the new “future”. This “green” technology, supposedly, produces “zero greenhouse gas emissions” and will help save the world from the throes of climate change. This sales pitch, adopted by American Democrats in their 2020 election cycle, couldn’t be further from the truth, because diesel engines are more environmentally-friendly than electric vehicles. According to an ecological assessment from the IFO Institute in Germany, electric cars have a worse

FTSE All-Share index for the full, ten-year period, up to 31 December 2018, you would have earned a profit of £4,754. But if you missed the five best days, returns would fall to £3,764, and again to £2,081, if the ten best days were missed. Meanwhile, being out of the market on the best 20 and 30 days would have brought respective losses of £132 and £1,896. Staying invested when markets fluctuate may feel uncomfortable, but this discipline usually produces better returns, over the longer term, than chasing short-term gains. Investment performance: the bigger picture It is common to remember extreme market highs and lows without looking at the overall picture. Most will be aware of 1987’s “Black Monday” global, stockmarket crash, for example, without realising that investors in the FTSE All-share index actually realised a 4% return, over the year.

While the focus also tends to be on share-market performance, wise investors will never have all their interests in one asset class (e.g. equities), nor in one geographical region. So when we hear about shocks in one share market, this overplays the actual impact on most investors. The importance of diversification Even patient investors are unlikely to benefit from an ill-fitting portfolio that does not meet their needs, or is overly-concentrated in one area. The best strategy for minimising risk is to spread investments across a range of different asset classes, geographical regions and market sectors. Diversification gives your portfolio the chance to produce positive returns over time, without being vulnerable to any single area or stock underperforming. Choosing an adviser who uses a dynamic “multimanager” approach can help increase diversification,

New Green Deal simply isn’t such good deal for us carbon footprint when considering how they are manufactured, and how much energy is pulled from the grid to keep them charged up. Tremendous volumes are needed to extract the lithium, cobalt and manganese needed to produce the batteries for electric cars. This process alone requires 11-15 tons of CO2, just to make one Tesla Model 3 battery. In fact, to keep electric vehicles charged, energy is pulled from the grid mix, requiring more coal, more gas, and,

consequentially, more CO2 emissions. Obviously, though electric cars don’t cause emissions directly from the vehicle, they do require 180 grams of CO2 per kilometre, when battery manufacturing and recharge requirements are considered. According to the German researchers, this causes up to 28% more pollution than a diesel engine. They believe that vehicles powered by hydrogen, or combustion engines using “green” methane, offer more advantages for the

reducing reliance on any one fund manager making the right decisions, in all market conditions. Establishing a suitable investment approach Before investing, it is crucial to assess your situation, income requirements, goals and timeline, alongside your appetite for risk. This is best done, objectively, by an experienced professional, who can then build a diversified portfolio with the right balance of risk/return, for your peace of mind. Your arrangements should also be structured as taxefficiently as possible, for your life in Spain. Talk to a locally-based adviser with cross-border experience, to make the most of available opportunities. If today’s climate still makes you nervous, you could consider spreading the timing of investments through “pound (or euro/ dollar) cost averaging”. This can help smooth out volatility, and potentially improve average returns,

environment, allowing for peaks in surplus wind and solar power to be stored, to boost the sustainability of clean energy over the longterm. To sustain the benefits of clean energy, long-term, every country should be aiming to diversify the sources of their energy consumption, or they could be forced to depend on other countries, straining resources globally, while threatening the long-term necessity, value, and growth of clean energy sources. This fact of life is ignored by proponents of ambitious socialist programmes such as the Green New Deal. Programmes such as these handcuff progress in the market-place, giving more economic control to oligarchs while capping environmental progress. There are cleaner, more

over longer time periods. You could also explore multicurrency arrangements that minimise exchange-rate risk, by allowing you to invest and make withdrawals in your preferred currency. Ultimately, a long-term, diversified, investment approach is vital to help protect and grow your capital, whatever the economic climate. While a “keep calm and stay invested” approach usually gives the best overall results, make sure you still review your planning once a year, or sooner if your circumstances change, to continue meeting your long-term, financial goals. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. efficient technologies than electric vehicles. Mandates for “green” technology use subsidies, backed by taxpayer dollars, to control the market and pass on gains to greedy investors. In America, environmental progress can occur through economic opportunity only, and not through economic sabotage. Market innovation, driven by open dialogue communication, should be prioritised over one-size-fits-all mandates. Protecting diversity in energy generation should take precedence over unstable environmental dictates and the crony capitalism that ensues. Environmental regulation should hold companies accountable to the law, but should not cause rationing of resources so only the wealthy and wellconnected can enjoy them. While clean-energy advances are excellent ideas for the planet, commercial flights, big engines, and fast cars will always have a place in America! Who wants to be stuck in traffic, waiting on puny electric cars that rely on batteries that go dead, and where do all the junk batteries go when they are used up? In addition, how will the power grid hold up in a country dominated by fleets of slow-charging batteries?

England fans still savour that famous win in 2003 when Jonny Wilkinson’s extra time drop goal secured the William Webb Ellis trophy, but Australia gained a modicum of revenge four years ago by dumping England out of the tournament in the pool stages. Eddie Jones’s team have brushed aside Tonga, USA and Argentina, but have yet to hit top gear and will face a stiff test of their credentials against a Wallabies side who finished second in Pool D behind Wales. There’s a gap missing from the family.” Sandra White, great-niece of Private John Steele, missing since the First World War “Every single one of these soldiers, they were somebody’s son; they were somebody’s brother; they were somebody’s husband.” Nicola Nash (War Detective) In thousands of fields across the world today lay the bodies of hundreds of thousands of fallen British servicemen, yet to be identified. Each man left behind family desperate to know the fate of their loved one. This special one-off episode of Long Lost Family, presented by Davina McCall and Nicky Campbell, is dedicated to the extraordinary searches across the world for soldiers lost in battle during the First World War. The programme has unprecedented access to the Ministry of Defence’s War Detectives, an elite all-female team who use state of the art forensics and ground-breaking technology to identify the bodies of unknown British and Commonwealth Soldiers. There are over half a million World War service personnel with no known grave and these historical investigators are tasked with identifying those whose remains are found and trying to trace their surviving families. Each year around 60 bodies of British service personnel killed in battle are found by farmers, builders and archaeologists worldwide. The War Detectives try to identify these remains and work tirelessly in their quest to find answers for the families, some of whom have been haunted for decades. Davina McCall says: “Every investigation that the War Detectives take on starts as just a case number, the anonymous remains of a soldier. The detectives’ mission is to identify that soldier.” Davina and Nicky join the detectives as they consult war maps, diaries, medical and service records and use DNA testing to piece together the life of each soldier from the time they left British shores to their final steps on the battlefield. They meet the families of the missing, helping them form a fully-rounded picture of their long lost relative and finally laying them to rest at a full military burial.

Catching Britain’s Killers: The Crimes That Changed Us Beginning in 1972, this episode tells the story of a miscarriage of justice that would lead to major changes in police powers. In 1972, the body of Maxwell Confait was found in a house in Catford, South London. After a short investigation, three local boys confessed to arson and murder. At the Old Bailey, all three were convicted, despite retracting their statements and protesting their innocence. Following the unfolding story, the programme explores how, after taking up their case, their local MP made sure it received maximum publicity, which finally led to an appeal where all three of the convictions were quashed. The fact that three teenage boys could have confessed to something they hadn’t done would shine a light on dangerous police practices and lead to a Royal Commission and an overhaul of the law. Weaving together archive and interviews with police officers, lawyers, politicians and relatives of the accused boys and of the late MP Christopher Price, this episode tells the story of the new rights for suspects that were brought in following the boys’ wrongful convictions. One miscarriage of justice would lead to a change in the law which brought in the right to a lawyer, a responsible adult and the tape recording of all police interviews. As the programme moves forward, the consequences of the case go further still. As tape recording reveals, police practices have not yet universally caught up with the changes in the law. Further reforms have led to the search for evidence, rather than pressing for confessions, as the goal for UK police investigations. As the episode shows, one single murder investigation in 1972 led to major reforms in British policing, transforming the rights of us all.

Prince Charles: Inside the Duchy of Cornwall

Two-part landmark observational documentary with privileged access to Prince Charles and his private domain, the Duchy of Cornwall, the ancient Royal estate which he has built up over the last 50 years into a billion pound business to support himself, his immediate family and his charities. This first episode examines the life’s work of Prince Charles as the longest serving Duke of Cornwall - referred to simply by his staff and tenants as “the Boss”. It shows how the Duchy is run to reflect his personal philosophies across the whole estate, stretching from the Duchy headquarters, adjacent to Buckingham Palace, to struggling farms on the far-flung Isles of Scilly. The film explores how the estate supports an ancient way of life on Bodmin Moor but also gives young families the opportunity to embark on a new start in farming. It’s all a stark contrast to the lives of residents in the Duchy’s ancient manor of Kennington, in inner-city London, and those of Poundbury, in Dorset, who are creating their own new community in a visionary and once controversial new town inspired by their Duke.

ARNOLD - and not only that, in their current guises they will all be making their Later debut!

Quarter Final Live: New Zealand v Ireland

Despite an impressive opening game win against Scotland, Ireland have not been at their very best so far this tournament and will need to up their game against a New Zealand side who sailed through the pool stages with four wins. Joe Schmidt knows how to beat the All Blacks; his Irish side have achieved this twice in recent years - most recently in Dublin last November - and the bulk of that team are still involved. Ireland have never reached a World cup semi final - a sharp contrast to Steve Hansen’s side who are aiming to lift the William Webb Ellis trophy for a record third time on the trot. Jill Douglas is joined by Brian O’Driscoll, Paul O’Connell and Sean Fitzpatrick in the studio in the Tokyo Stadium with pitch-side inserts from Gabriel Clarke and Bryan Habana and commentary from Miles Harrison, Alan Quinlan and Scott Hastings.

“Ever since I came to this continent as a young boy, trying to cope with something I can never possibly describe, Africa has held me in an embrace that I will never forget.” - Prince Harry “This is the third documentary I’ve made with Prince Harry in Africa. I expected it to be an interesting journey but this ended up being a fascinating insight taking in their passion for their work, their private happiness and the challenge and pressure of balancing their public duties and family life.” – Tom Bradby In this new documentary filmed on their tour of Africa, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex speak exclusively to Tom Bradby about the causes and issues they care most about, and their fresh and personal approach to being modern Royals. The Met: Policing London Tonight’s episode follows detectives from the Murder Investigation Team as they hunt down the down the attackers of a 30 year-old man who is violently beaten after a night out in Greenwich, and died six days later. In Westminster, response officers have problems finding an available custody suite, after arresting a woman. In Croydon, DI Dan O’Sullivan is busy chasing a serial burglar who the detective calls “a crime wave in himself”. Detectives from the Murder Investigation Team deal with an attack in Greenwich, where a 30 year-old man is violently beaten after a night out and dies six days later. DS Brendan Ward and his team are determined to track down those responsible. After forensic investigation of over 100 hours of CCTV - six men are identified on camera as suspects. An expert lip reader is consulted to review some key footage of the suspects, in order to understand more about the motive for the attack. The detectives are keen to get justice for what they believe is “an innocent man who went out for a drink on a Saturday night and didn’t come home”. In Central London response officers PC Alex Orme and PC Lydia Vanbergen are on patrol in Westminster where a woman is arrested and taken to custody. But at the nearest police station in Charing Cross all 42 cells are full, so the officers head a few miles away to Islington. They have to wait a number of hours before they can check in their suspect, taking them away from their duties responding to other 999 calls. In Croydon, detectives from CID are on the hunt for a serial burglar, who has recently been caught on CCTV at a number of attempted burglaries. The detectives discover the suspect is already wanted for other offences. DI Dan O’Sullivan and his team prioritise trying to track him down via his getaway car and spend several days trying to trace his whereabouts until they finally get a breakthrough.

Irish grandad portrays grave sense of humour A DUBLIN man was given his dying wish to make his loved ones laugh as much at him in death, as they did in life. Irishman Shay Bradley planned an elaborate prank before he passed away, in a bid to give his mourners something to chuckle about at his funeral. The grandad-of-eight has gone viral from beyond the grave, after footage of his final journey in a south Dublin graveyard began whipping around the world. The clip shows mourners gathered around Shay’s open grave, applauding as bagpipe music begins when, suddenly, the tunes stop and a man can be heard saying “hello”, and knocking on what sounds like, the inside of the coffin, reports Dublin Live. Shocked family and friends are filmed looking around in disbelief as Shay begins to roar “let me out” from a prerecorded message being played through a speaker. Their tears soon turn to laughter when Shay can be heard saying “it’s dark in here”, Shay continues: “Let me out. I can hear you! Is that the priest I can hear? I’m in the box; can you hear that?” The south Dublin native finishes the prank by

serenading the crowd shortly before the video ends. His daughter, Andrea, posted the video on Facebook saying: “My dad’s dying wish, always the prankster. You got them good Poppabear, and gave us all a laugh just when we needed it! I will love you forever #shayslastlaugh.” She added on Twitter: “It was his dying wish that we played this at his funeral. What a man, to make us all laugh when we were incredibly sad. He was some man for one man. Love you forever Poppabear.” Shay’s service was conducted last Saturday at St. Kevin’s Church, Kilnamanagh, and he was buried at Bohernabreena Cemetery. He is survived by his loving wife Anne and children Jonathan, Susanne, James and Andrea, along with eight grandchildren.

Royal Mail workers’ vote to strike is looming large

BRITAIN’S Royal Mail workers have voted hugely in favour of strikes, following a dispute over job security and employment terms and conditions, the Communication Workers Union said. Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) backed action by 97%, in a huge turn-out of almost 76%. The dispute has flared over implementation of a socalled Four Pillars Agreement, reached last year between the union and Royal Mail. These include working hours, the use of technology to monitor efficiency, and its parcel-sorting systems. The CWU said that Royal Mail was not sticking to an agreement reached last year, covering a wide range of issues, including plans to reduce the working week, as well as job security. Industrial relations at the company have worsened this year, with widespread, unofficial strikes breaking out virtually every week.

Terry Pullinger, the CWU’s Deputy General Secretary, says the union and its members are facing the fight of their lives. And the CWU said the result represented the largest Yes vote for national industrial action since the passing of the Trade union Act 2016. The union said the prospect of the first national postal strike in a decade now looms large, and Pullinger said: “Just over one year ago, the Royal Mail Group Board and the CWU agreed a blue-print agreement for the future. “It’s a progressive agreement that included a historic pension solution, a mutual, interest-driven relationship and a joint vision, for a successful postal

service with social aims. “Today, the new RMG leadership is breaking that agreement. Our members take honour seriously, and have voted to fight for that agreement, against those who now seek to break up the great British Postal service, in the interest of fasttrack profit and greed.” He added: “Integrity and pride still matter, and we will not stand aside and see destroyed what we have spent our working lives building.” General Secretary Dave Ward said: “This result sends a clear message to Royal Mail Group. Our members will not stand by as you rip up their terms and conditions, and destroy the service they give to the public and businesses of the UK. “We would urge Royal Mail Group to now enter serious negotiations with this union. We also call on the public to get behind this dispute and your postal workers. “We are very proud of our members today. They have stood by their union in record numbers, and have given hope to workers across the nation.”

K9 Animal News HOW many black and white cats can you count in the photo? Say hello to these three brothers, Beau, Flake and Marley. Happily, one of the brothers, Marley, has been adopted, but the other two have found themselves at K9. They came from the UK to Tenerife in 2015. All was going well until a couple of years later, when their owner had to return to the UK, and was unable to take them with her. Luckily, they went into a foster home, until they were brought to K9, a few weeks ago. Beau and Flake are looking for their forever homes, and are hoping their chance will come soon! Can you help them? They are extremely friendly and loving boys, and are negative for FIV and FELV (Feline Aids and leukaemia). They have both been castrated, and have passports, too. They are favourites among our cat lovers at K9, and we really would love them to find their forever homes. They have been moved around a lot in

THIS lovely, gentle, sad dog arrived at the refuge via Protection Civil. She had been abandoned on the streets, after recently having had puppies. Of no use to her owner, she was dumped on the street like a piece of garbage. Where are the puppies, and what future do they have? We will never know. The cruelty that we see shown every day, to the dogs, is heart-breaking. They are such loving, dedicated, gentle animals. Please adopt, and do not buy! Exhibition Nikki Attree has created a wonderful portfolio of paintings and sculptures, expressing the plight of the abandoned dogs, here in Tenerife. From today (Friday 18th) until the 30th October, an exhibition of her work will be held at the Cultural Centre in Adeje, every day from 8am-9pm. Nikki is a very talented artist who has spent a lot of her time helping the refuges on the island, by expressing the importance of adopting, and not buying, a dog. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are

very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. Oranges ar Oranges are among the world’s most-popular fruits. Their true origin is a mystery, but their cultivation is thought to have started in eastern Asia, thousands of years ago. Today, they are grown in most warm regions of the world, and consumed either fresh, or as juice. They have multiple health benefits. Oranges are mainly composed of carbohydrates and water, with very little protein, fat and calories. Simple sugars, such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose, are the dominant form of carbs in oranges. They are responsible for the fruit’s sweet taste. Fibre Oranges are a good source of fibre. One large orange packs around 18% of the RDA. Dietary fibre is associated with many beneficial health effects, including improved digestive health, weight loss and cholesterol. One large orange provides over 100% of the RDA *Thiamine: One of the B Vitamins, also called Vitamin B1, thiamine is found in a wide variety of foods *Folate: Also known as Vitamin B9 or folic acid, folate has many essential functions, and is found in many plant foods *Potassium: Oranges are a good source of potassium. High intake of potassium can lower blood pressure in people who already have high levels, and may reduce the risk of heart disease. Other plant compounds Oranges are rich in various bioactive plant compounds, which are believed to be responsible for many beneficial health effects. Citric acid Oranges and other citrus fruits are high in citric acid and citrates, which contribute to their sour taste. Research indicates that citric acid and citrates from oranges may help prevent kidney-stone formation Health benefits of oranges Human and animal studies indicate that regular consumption of oranges is beneficial for health. re so appeeling! effects against heart disease. Clinical studies in humans note that daily intake of orange juice, for four weeks, has a blood-thinning effect, and may reduce blood pressure, significantly Kidney stone prevention Oranges are a good source of citric acid and citrates, which are believed to help prevent kidney-stone formation. Potassium citrate is often prescribed to patients with kidney stones. Anaemia prevention

Anaemia is a condition characterised by low levels of red blood cells or haemoglobin, decreasing its ability to carry oxygen. It is often caused by iron deficiency. Although oranges are not a good source of iron, they are an excellent source of organic acids, such as Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and citric acid. Both Vitamin C and citric acid can increase your body’s absorption of iron from the digestive tract. When eaten

with iron-rich food, oranges may help prevent anaemia. Whole oranges vs. orange juice Orange juice is a popular drink throughout the world. One of the main differences between pure orange juice and whole oranges is that juice is much lower in fibre. One cup (240 ml) of pure orange juice has a similar amount of natural sugar as two whole oranges, and is much less filling. As a result, fruit-juice consumption can

often become excessive, and may contribute to weight gain and health problems. This applies especially to juice that contains added sugar. Although quality orange juice can be healthy in moderation, whole oranges are generally a much better choice. Orange peel actually contains higher amounts of certain nutrients than the flesh, so using recipes that incorporate the zest of an orange will give your diet an extra boost.

PRACTISING good oral hygiene is crucial for your overall health, but it can also help prevent erectile dysfunction (ED). According to an interesting study, there is a link between gum disease and ED, or impotence, in men. The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Granada, in Spain. This is the first of its kind to be conducted on a European population. According to the study, men with periodontitis are at greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction. Periodontitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the gums. This gum disease also damages the structures that surround and support the teeth. The researchers believe that A GLOBAL study, published in the JAMA Psychiatry journal about the use of anti-depressants, in which Spain took part, has shown that these highly-prescribed drugs are, in fact, safe, even over the long-term. And, says Dr Eduard Vieta, scientific director of Spain’s Mental Health Research Centre (CIBERSAM): “The investigation is, without doubt, the most conclusive into the long-term safety of various types of anti-depressants, including tricyclic and SSRI medication. It shows that, properly used, they provide much greater benefit than risk.” A total of 4,471 case studies and 252 full-text articles, with data from 1,012 individual, effect-size estimates, were used in 45 meta-analyses, or reviews of existing research reports. Some of the newer drugs available, such as the Danish-created Vortioxetine, retailed as Brintellix, did not have enough information to hand. But the other most popular types, such as Prozac, Seroxat and Sertraline, are said to be “very safe, with no convincing evidence of major health risks”. According to the JAMA report, typical adverse effects include an increased suicide risk in patients aged 18 and under, pre-term births or autism spectrum

Gum disease can be a bit of a flop effective tooth-brushing and good dental hygiene can help prevent this type of male, sexual impotence. Gum inflammation and impotence Erectile dysfunction refers to the inability of a man to achieve an erection. The condition may be caused by physical or psychological factors. Alternatively, ED can be caused by a combination of the two factors. Periodontitis is characterised by chronic inflammation of the gums. This disease gradually damages the alveolar bone, and the connective tissues that anchor the teeth in place. If left untreated, periodontitis can result in tooth loss. The researchers noted that periodontal bacteria or inflammatory cytokines from the infected gums cause damage to the vascular endothelial cells. Once this endothelial dysfunction occurs in the blood vessels, blood-flow is negatively affected. This explains why having bad oral hygiene results in ED. For the UGR study, the scientists worked with 80 men. The researchers also used 78 controls. The participants included patients undergoing

treatment at the Urology Service of the Clinico San Cecilio Hospital, at Granada’s Health Sciences Technology Park. The researchers analysed sociodemographic data from the volunteers, who also had periodontal examination and were tested for the following: *Blood glucose levels *C-reactive haemoglobin *Glycated hakkemoglobin *Lipid profile *Testosterone levels The scientists discovered that at least 74% of the patients with erectile dysfunction had signs of periodontitis. The

participants with the most severe cases of ED were also those with the worst periodontal damage. The researchers noted that volunteers with periodontitis were at least 2.28 times more likely to have ED than the rest of the participants with healthy gums. Gum disease Periodontitis is a severe gum infection, caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth and gums. Symptoms may vary, depending on the stage of the disease, but they often include:

Anti-depressants are perfectly safe, even in long-term disorders in children whose mothers or fathers had taken SSRIs before or during conception or pregnancy, sexual dysfunction, bonefractures caused by acquired osteoporosis, and upper-gastrointestinal bleeding. In most cases, a probability rating of 5%, considered the minimum for evidence to be “significant” in medical and psychological, among other scientific, studies, was not reached. And many of the serious, adverse effects were found to have been caused by the conditions for which the medications were prescribed, rather than the drugs themselves. For example, sexual dysfunction may be a result of depression itself, and merely aggravated by the effects of anti-depressants, and suicide risk may already be present. But the “clarity of mind” created by taking

these medications may enable those with suicidal thoughts to “plan” their attempts properly. But no evidence was found for anti-depressants actually preventing suicide, however. Children with autism spectrum disorders, born to parents on anti-depressants, were found to be low enough in number that the risk can be considered insignificant. Yet in some cases, the patient taking antidepressant medication may already have an underlying, possibly undiagnosed, autism spectrum disorder, which is simply inherited by their offspring. As many as one in 10 users of anti-depressants reports gastrointestinal disorders, such as nausea, diarrhoea, acid, and cramps, as well as excessive yawning and tiredness, insomnia when doses are increased, restlessness and muscular

contractions. But in the vast majority of cases, these wear off after a few weeks, and the digestion issues can often be prevented by not taking the drugs on an empty stomach. One of the worst-tolerated, but “normal” side-effects of the newly-released Vortioxetine reported, is generalised itching, either upon initial prescription or upon dosage increase. Again, though, this has usually ceased after the first three weeks. The vast majority of “normal or expected” antidepressant side-effects can be treated successfully while they last, if the patient finds them intolerable. Dr Evangelos Evangelou, epidemiologist at the Ioannina University in Greece, and at Imperial College London, is the main author of the research, which involved scientists from all over Europe, the

*Bad breath (halitosis) *Changes in the position of teeth *Foul taste in the mouth *Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing your teeth *Inflammatory response throughout the body *Loose teeth *Pain when chewing *Plaque or tartar build-up on your teeth *Receding gums *Tender, red, or swollen gums *Tooth loss. Periodontitis is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. Other factors can also cause the disease, such as: *Diseases that impact the immune system *Genetics *Hormonal changes in women (menstruation, pregnancy or menopause) that make the gums more sensitive *Medications that can reduce saliva flow in the mouth *Obesity *Poor nutrition *Smoking, one of the biggest risk factors for the condition *Type 2 diabetes. To prevent periodontitis, give up smoking or chewing tobacco. You should also brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss, daily, to get rid of plaque.

US, Canada and Asia, who says: “Although we have shown that anti-depressants are safe, we should bear in mind that adverse effects must be controlled clinically, and monitored during treatment.” Earlier but recent research has shown that up to one in four people worldwide suffers from the type of psychiatric conditions, for which anti-depressants would normally be prescribed: anxiety, panic attacks, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major (circumstantial, temporary and very severe) depression, dysthymic (chronic, but milder and usually hereditary) depression, bipolar (formerly “manic”) depression, and bulimia and other eating disorders. It also shows that its prevalence is similar in almost every country, albeit higher than average in third-world women. Right now, it is believed that between 8% and 10% of US residents take at least one type of anti-depressant, although the actual clinical need for them could be higher given that, in the US, typically, income dictates access to healthcare. Overall, though, antidepressants are the thirdmost-prescribed type of medications on earth.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE travelled to Madrid last Friday, anxious to break their run of three defeats in a row. But they faced a Rayo Vallecano side who wanted to do better than the five consecutive draws they’d experienced. The first 20 minutes were poor, as neither side seemed to want to take charge of the game, and both gave away possession in midfield without having a single shot. That was especially strange for Rayo in recent matches because they had usually started brightly. In fact, the first real chance fell to Tenerife in the 25th minute. Nahuel broke down the right-hand side and cut the ball back into the box for Luis Milla, who slotted it neatly past Rayo goalkeeper Morro, to make it 1-0 against his old club. After the goal, it was as though someone had flicked a switch, and both teams started to attack. They each had good chances, but it didn’t take long for Rayo to equalise. Tenerife conceded a freekick in the middle of the pitch, a good 35 yards from goal, and Rayo captain Adrián Embarba stepped up to take it. Rayo pushed forward in numbers, and Embarba delivered a perfect cross into the box,

Tennis LEGENDARY tennis star Rafael Nadal has hinted that his retirement may be earlier than expected, certainly for his vast following, who have always suspected he would carry on forever. Rafa, from Mallorca, and now 33, who marries his high-school sweetheart Meri Perelló tomorrow (Saturday), has announced that he is in “the final phase” of his tennis career, although intends to remain in the world of tennis for as long as he can. His eponymous sports academy in Manacor, home of his and fiancée Meri, where some of the best young tennis players in Spain are currently training, is, said Rafa: “My great project for the future,

which Alejandro Catena, the tallest player on the pitch, rose high and headed the ball strongly back across goal and into the far corner of net, past an outstretched Ortolá, who didn’t stand a chance. From then on, it was all Rayo for the rest of the half. Embarba had another freekick a few minutes later from 20 yards out in front of goal. But this time he blasted it over the wall, leaving Ortolá stranded. But at least he hit the crossbar with a Cristiano Ronaldotype effort. Embarba was the difference again when he fed through a perfect ball for

Tito in front of goal, whose shot from 20 yards was pushed wide by the fingertips of a diving Ortolá. Amazingly, the teams went into half-time, level at 1-1. Rayo started the second half just as they’d finished the first, with good, attacking football, and frankly, playing Tenerife off the pitch. This time it was Montiel who became provider, with a lovely cross that found Ulloa in the middle. But his header went wide, letting Tenerife off the hook. In the 69th minute, Rayo had a corner from the right, and again it was Embarba who took it, sending over a lovely inswinger into the

danger zone, between Ortolá and his defenders. Ortolá came to claim the ball, but completely misjudged it, and this time Saveljich jumped highest and headed into an open goal easily to put the home side ahead for the first time. A few minutes later, skipper Embarba, easily man of the match, was substituted with a suspected hamstring strain, and the game’s fizz fell flat. For the next 20 minutes, Tenerife tried to salvage something, but Rayo defended in numbers and settled for a 2-1 success. It was a welcome win for the home side, the three points moving them up to seventh

in the table. But there were few positives for Tenerife, who remain in 15th spot, with a home game on Sunday against Racing who are in the bottom three. It’s a fixture CDT need to win to regain some Heliodora form. The biggest thing to emerge from their clash with Rayo was Embarba’s form. The 27-year-old Spanish midfielder is too good for this league, as he showed in previous seasons with Rayo in La Liga. If they don’t get promoted this season, look out for him because clubs around the world could easily benefit from his delivery, along with his dead-ball skills.

Nadal nears the end of a brilliant career

and for this reason, I want to get more involved in it.” He added: “I’m in love with the sport and want to stay connected to it when I retire.

I’m now in the final phase… it’s sad, but what can you do?” Rafa, who runs a Manacor charitable foundation, of

which his mother is chair and his fiancée is project manager, is now a geriatric in tennis terms. Yet he is still a year younger than the late Andrés Gimeno was when he won the French Open in Roland Garros in 1972. Nadal has won that prestigious title 12 times since 2005. But his long-standing injuries are proving careerlimiting. They started with a knee problem, which led to him crashing out of Wimbledon in 2012 in the first round, and forced him to scratch from the London 2012 Olympics. And though he went on to win gold in the doubles in Rio 2016, Nadal’s current

ailment is a wrist strain, which has compelled him to pick and choose his tournaments carefully. “It’s been a good year,” admitted Nadal. “Last year was, too, but I had to scratch from several tournaments because of physical problems. Now, from Barcelona to the present, I’ve been able to play the competitions I’ve wanted to, and hope to be able to follow my planned schedule.” For the moment, though, Rafa has pulled out of the Shanghai Masters to focus on being in top form for the London Masters, and he is expected to compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

It’s food for thought, as players lap it up! WEEK 15, and both the darts and the food seems to have been quite special. Gaffers # Team Hollywood kept themselves firmly in the title hunt, with a 6-2 home win over Mad Hatters, and, apparently, it was a good night. Importantly, “the food was great”. Scooters & Chevys “A” and Loch Inn Bullseyes had a marathon game, which finished 5-3, the match being decided on the trebles game. And, along the way, Anita won her singles 3-2, with three doubleone finishes… and, apparently, she hates double one. As for the food, well here’s the quote: “A long night, good fun, very hot, good curry. Thanks everyone, especially to the bar staff, Lindsey”. Sandys Bandits had a house derby with Sandys Bookie Boys. The latter won 6-2, and not a single 3-2 on the score sheet. Pas O Nadas A were visited by Suters 20:30 Crew, and Luc knocked in two 180s, while Stevie Sub chipped in with another one for Pas O Nadas. So they won the maximums’ contest, but the match was

shared 4-4. Ourplace Playboys welcomed Pas O Nadas International, and, by all accounts, some amazing darts were thrown, including a 180 for the home team’s Del Boy, as the Playboys streaked into a 4-1 lead. But International fought back, and it all ended with a well-earned 4-4 draw for both teams. The Pub visited Emerald B and ran out 7-1 winners, the home team having to settle for the team game. But it could have been closer because there were some tight games, and, importantly, a good night was had by all. The food was pretty good as well! In Division 2, Naughty Nautas welcomed Ourplace Playgirls, and, in a tight match, the trebles game decided

it, 5-3 in favour of the home team. As Mo put it: “A fantastic night, with all close games. Great banter, and Nautas took the trebles. Thanks, Shar, for the lovely stew.” That food theme is still there. Pod, Karen and Tony, all undefeated in their three games, were the stars, as Pas O Nadas went to Sundowners, and won 7-1. Pink Elephant welcomed unbeaten Club Activo, and ruined their record with a trebles win that led to a 5-3 victory. Clearly, there were some great darts thrown, as Lynn Hind said: “Wow, what a fantastic night. This is what darts is all about.” And if that doesn’t convince you, then Graham John Mackerrall’s words should do it: “Result 5-3 to PE! trebles to pe!

Well, you can nail my b**ls to the floorboards with a rusty nail! What a fantastic night of darts, and never have I seen such a good night played so well, with such good banter! Per hitting a 180 didn’t help! Our 1st loss this season!” Don’t think they cared about the food! Scooters & Chevys B travelled to The Club House, and, as Mark Howe from the home team put it: “Club House 4 Scooters 4. Trebles went to Scooters. What a great night… could have gone either way. You guys played out of your skins. A brilliant performance. Top night!!!” For me that’s as sporting as it gets. Credit to Mark. Marilyns, who recently recorded their first win, are showing improved form, but not quite good enough to stop visiting Ourplace Breakaways, who clinched a 5-3 win. Clouseau’s were paid a visit by Picassos, and the home team took the trebles game to earn a 4-4 draw. Palms Sports Bar were at home to Emerald Lounge, and the visitors, no doubt, boosted by Matts 180, went on to a very good 6-2 win. So

Watch this week’s major sporting events at the following venues:

Matt is getting the big scores, but daughter Laura is also getting in on things. They paired up for doubles, and Laura hit the winning double 16. She might be getting

sloppy, though, because it took her two darts! Last week she hit the winning double one, with her first dart. Who finds double one easier than double 16?
