Jet2 boss Heapy earns his prestigious Gorilla award

Continued from Front

The award, which celebrates its 16th anniversary this year, highlights environmental responsibility, taking into account strategies and actions to conserve biodiversity, and the sustainable use of resources. The Jet2.com airline has a customer-focused policy, with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, and was the first to reduce the use of plastics on board. More than 200 guests attended the event, held in the Assembly Hall of the regional government, along with numerous members of the local, island and regional authorities, as well as civilian, military, consular and private-sector representatives. Loro Parque President Wolfgang Kiessling took the opportunity to highlight Mr Heapy’s commitment to sustainability in the world’s present, environmental situation, where overpopulation is causing irreversible damage to nature, and the species which inhabit it. That is why, over the last 25 years, the Loro Parque Fundación has invested over 21 million US dollars in hundreds of conservation projects all over the world, with numerous successful results, such as the nine species of parrots, which were saved from imminent extinction. Mr Kiessling, founder of Loro Parque and Loro Parque Fundación, also emphasised

Jet2 chief Steve Heapy (2nd left) wins Loro Parque’s prestigious Gorilla 2018 award the role of the zoological institutions in this context, adding that if they did not already exist, they should have been invented, urgently! “Loro Parque is working daily to bring the animal world closer to the people, so that they can appreciate their beauty, their character, their smell and their behaviour… in order, thus, to educate and raise awareness among the public about the need protect them,” he said. For his part, Steve Heapy

wanted to strengthen his bond with the Canary Islands, which, he said, the company had supported “in good times and also in bad times”. The Jet2.com and Jet2holidays chief added: “We remain faithful to our destinations and work to create a beneficial and sustainable business model for both parties.” He also underlined his commitment to the fight against plastic, in line with Loro Parque. “It was

Christoph Kiessling, who, many years ago, told me about the large amount of plastic that ends up in the oceans,” he said, before detailing the actions Jet2 have been implementing to help save the planet. Mr Heapy joined Jet2 in 2009 as Managing Director and Commercial Director. He previously held senior positions in other industry companies, such as My Travel, Thomas Cook and Libra Holidays. In 2013, he was promoted to

CEO as executive director of Jet2.com and the internal tour operator Jet2holidays. Since its inception, Jet2.com has quadrupled its number of passengers and tripled its flights, positioning itself as a leader in capacity, compared with other lowcost airlines. In addition, it has received numerous awards, such as the Bronze Award for “Best Tour Operator in the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands”, presented by the British Travel Awards in 2010.

It’s mass murder, as 39 bodies are found frozen in container THE 39 tragic people, found frozen to death in a refrigerated container on a lorry in Grays, Essex in the early hours of Wednesday, were Chinese nationals, say sources.

Suspect Mo Robinson, the driver, was arrested on Wednesday

Head-on crash leaves

driver badly injured A MAN aged 52, involved in a head-on crash on Tuesday afternoon with a woman on the TF-66, in the Arona municipality, is in a serious condition.

The busy road connects Las Galletas with the Guaza roundabout, heading towards Valle San Lorenzo, and the Canarian emergency services were informed of the accident just before 2pm. The caller requested an ambulance after explaining that there had been a nasty collision, involving an Opel Corsa and a Mini convertible. The operator dispatched the emergency services to the scene, known to many as La Curva de las Burras. Officials believe the

accident happened when the woman Mini driver drove into the oncoming traffic, partially, causing her to crash head-on with the Opal Corsa, her vehicle rolling over, and into the oncoming lane. The pilot of a Red Cross medical helicopter sent to the scene, landed on the TF 66 to get as close to the Opel driver as he could. He then transferred him into the helicopter before taking him to Candelaria Hospital, in Santa Cruz. The woman, who also suffered injuries, though not as serious, was taken to Hospiten Sur for treatment. The Guardia Civil were at the scene to assist with the emergency, as well as to control the traffic flow.

Police have searched two addresses in Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, in connection with the horrific discovery comprising 31 men and eight women in a refrigerated lorry. The searches are believed to be linked to the arrest of the driver, named locally as Mo Robinson, 25, from Portadown. He remains in custody for questioning by Essex Police on suspicion of murder. Councillor Paul Berry said the village of Laurelvale, where the Robinson family live, was in “complete shock”. Detectives have said the trailer containing the victims arrived at Purfleet from Zeebrugge in Belgium at around 12.30am on Wednesday, and the front section to which it was attached, known as the tractor, came from Northern Ireland. The lorry and trailer left the Purfleet port shortly after 1.05am, and officers were

called some 30 minutes later, after ambulance staff made the grim discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park, in nearby Grays. Eric Van Duyse, a spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, said Brussels had started an investigation into the incident, adding: “We have no idea at the moment how long the lorry spent in Belgium. It could be hours or days… we just don’t know.” The horrific number of deaths follow warnings from the National Crime Agency (NCA), and the Border Force, of the increased risk of peoplesmuggling via Belgium, into quieter ports such as Purfleet. The NCA previously said it had a “greater focus” on rising smuggler numbers in Belgium, following the closure of a migrant camp, while a Border Force assessment highlighted Zeebrugge as being “among key ports of embarkation for clandestine arrivals”. The NCA has also warned that criminal networks are suspected to have started targeting quieter ports on the east and south coasts of the UK, as well as the main Channel crossing between Calais and

Dover. Deputy Chief Constable Pippa Mills said on Wednesday afternoon that the lorry and container were being moved to nearby Tilbury Docks, so the bodies could be recovered, while preserving the dignity of the victims. She added: “We are yet to identify them, and must manage this sensitively with their families.” Police have said tracking the route used “will be a key line of inquiry”. The Bulgarian Foreign Affair Ministry said the truck was registered in Varna in Bulgaria “under the name of a company owned by an Irish citizen”. Police originally thought the lorry had travelled to the UK through Holyhead, in north Wales, on 19th, but later revealed that the trailer had come directly from the Continent. A freight ferry service runs from Zeebrugge to Purfleet, where security checks for peoplesmuggling are believed to be less stringent at both ports, than at Calais and Dover. The discovery came as the NCA revealed that the number of migrants being smuggled into the UK in containers and lorries has risen in the last year.

NHS nurse in plea for funds to feed her, along with an autistic daughter A NURSE, who works for the NHS, says she is so poor that she cannot feed herself, so she has asked strangers for donations to help pay her bills. After paying her rent, childcare and travel costs, single mum Sarah Gilson says she is left with nothing, despite working full-time as a cardiac nurse. She is understood to work at one of the country’s largest NHS trusts, which runs both University College Hospital and the Royal London Hospital. But she spoke of her upset on Twitter, admitting that she feels unable to provide for Beth, her 10-year-old autistic daughter, because of her low pay. Sarah, 39, who hopes sympathetic strangers will send her money to help make ends meet, Tweeted: “I’m a cardiology nurse of 16 years and single mum to my beautiful daughter. I’m currently really struggling to pay my bills (and with the cost of living in general), so

I would appreciate it if you could retweet. “I’m more than happy to show proof of my incomings and outgoings (if you scroll down my TL, I have actually provided screen shots). But if you wish to troll me, I’m just going to block you. “You are perfectly capable of ignoring this tweet if you disagree with its purpose. Thank you.” Sarah explained how she was left living on the breadline, despite spending 16 years caring for others, in her role as a cardiac nurse. Her linkedin profile says she has worked for 11 years at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs a number of high-profile London hospitals. She said her take-home pay a month was £2,000, before forking out £670 for rent, around £600 for childcare and £579 for travel. Sarah added: “My basic outgoings (rent, travel to work and childcare) are equal to my monthly wages. There is nothing left for bills

and groceries, and I have to work extra shifts to pay for these (if they’re available.)” Ms Gilson, who has 1,600 Twitter followers, was trolled for asking for cash to be sent to her on PayPal. The nurse apologised for her rash response to one troll, saying that being unable to support her daughter was troubling her. “Every day, I live with the fact that I can’t support my child,” she said. “I should be able to, because I work my ass off and I fail.” Sarah, who also started a GoFundMe page in June, to help support her daughter, wrote: “I would love to take Beth on holiday after her SATs next year. I feel that having something positive to concentrate on would help keep her focused, and take her mind off the stress of exams. “As a nurse and single mother, however, my funds are very limited and a friend suggested that I set up a GoFundMe campaign, which people could donate to instead of giving birthday/ Christmas presents.

“At first, I was reluctant because I HATE asking for help. But I now realise that

asking for help when the reason is not about you is ok.”

‘Killer’ robots could

start war by chance, says Google objector Too many hitmen

aim far too high! FIVE Chinese hitmen have been jailed for attempted murder, after each one avoided carrying out the contract himself so that he could make a profit anyway.

Chinese businessman Tan Youhui looking for a hitman to take out competitor Wei Mou, was willing to pay two million yuan (£218,000) to get the job done. But his man decided to offer the job to another hitman, for half the original price. The second hitman then sub-contracted to another one, who then sub-contracted to a fourth, who passed the job to a fifth killer. However, hitman No.5 was so incensed at how much the value of the contract had fallen, that he told the target to fake his own death, which, eventually, led to the police finding out about the plot, reported Beijing News. The businessman and the hapless assassins were all convicted of attempted murder by the Nanning, Guangxi court, following a three-year trial. The original dispute occurred in 2013, when Wei decided to sue real estate developer Youhui. Worried he would lose the lengthy court battle, Tan hired a hitman named Xi Guangan to kill Mr Wei. However, Xi contacted another hitman, Mo Tianxiang, offering him half the original sum. Mo then decided to contact a third hitman, Yang Kangsheng, who quoted an upfront price of 270,000 Yuan to carry out the hit, with 500,000 Yuan to be handed over once it was done. However, Yang Kangsheng passed it on to another hitman, Yang Guangsheng, for a further reduced fee. The contract finally came to the fifth hitman, Ling Xiansi, who eventually told the police. Tan, who hired the original hitman, was jailed for five years, while No.1 hitman Xi was sentenced to three years and six months. Yang Kangsheng and Yang Guangsheng were sentenced to three years and three months, Mo was sentenced to three years, and Ling was sentenced to two years and seven months.

30,000ft masterclass in character design! FORGET peanuts and free magazines… here’s an in-flight service with a difference. Some 200 passengers, being flown from Madrid to Tenerife, were treated to what might be the first characterdesign masterclass on a plane. Standing in the aisle, the animators Carlos and José Mansuy gave a lesson in illustration, teaching passengers the techniques for sketching a cartoon traveller, and showing them how to create basic, flip-book animation. Mansuy is a veteran storyboard artist and animator whose credits include the Woody Woodpecker film and Klaus, by Sergio Pablos. Miranda is a storyboard artist and art director at Mondo TV Canarias, a studio in Tenerife. He also set up the Spanish animation news website TFanimation.com, which organised the masterclass in partnership with low-cost carrier Iberia Express. The masterclass was held in tandem with the 16th edition of the Salón del Comic de Tenerife, a comics and illustration convention held on the island. In recent years, there has been a boom in Tenerife’s animation and creative industries, mainly because of the Cabildo’s financial incentives. As far as we’re aware, this is the first such event to take place 30,000 feet up in the air.

FORMER Google software engineer Laura Nolan, who resigned from the company last year, has issued a warning that autonomous killer robots could, accidentally, start a war in the future.

Laura has called for automated weaponry to be outlawed by international treaties. She believes that artificially-intelligent military technology should be outlawed in the same way that chemical weapons are. Her reasoning is that, unlike a human-controlled drone, an autonomous machine could do something unexpected and end up starting World War III. She quit Google in protest, after being asked to work on a project to improve the US military’s drone technology. However, there is no suggestion that Google is building, or researching, any kind of autonomous killing machine. But Laura is a vocal member of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, which talks with the UN in New York and Geneva about the possibility of something like this actually happening. “There could be large-scale accidents, because these things will start to behave in unexpected ways,’ she told the Guardian newspaper. “That is why any advancedweapons’ systems should be subject to meaningful human control; otherwise, they have to be banned because they are far too unpredictable and dangerous.”

An autonomous machine, not constructed by Google, on the prowl

The job Laura worked on at Google, known as Project Maven, was shelved after more than 3,000 employees signed a petition against it. The idea behind it was that a trained, artificial-intelligence robot could cycle through hours of drone video content and, quickly, differentiate between humans and objects. In the future, it could make unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) even more accurate when searching for a target. But Google had a project, which aimed to improve drone-targeting (defence. pk). After resigning, Laura predicted that the demand for autonomous weapons

would grow, with fatal consequences. “You could have a scenario where autonomous weapons, sent out to do a job, confront unexpected radar signals in an area they are searching,” she said. Perhaps the weather is not factored into its software, or they come across a group of armed men, who appear to be insurgent enemies. In fact, they are out with guns, hunting for food. “But the machine wouldn’t have the discernment or common sense that the human touch has. The other scary thing about these autonomous war systems is that you can only test them properly by deploying them in a real combat zone.”

Stunning new sculpture

is also a welcome shelter EL HIERRO is paying tribute to the traditional shepherd with a new, large-format bronze sculpture by Manuel González. The island’s Cabildo has, officially, received the sculpture, which cost 70,000 euros. This artistic work can already be seen in La Dehesa, a space chosen for its special relationship with traditional grazing there.

The bronze figure represents a shepherd, dressed with a blanket in an upright position, stepping out with his left hand firmly grasping the shepherd’s

stick, and on his right, his wolfhound dog companion. The sculpture’s large size, and

a cavity in the figure itself, allows access to the interior to shelter from the weather.

Tenerife transport is just the ticket for Breast Cancer Day

Ambulance thief, who mowed down a baby! AN armed man, who was arrested after running down people in a stolen ambulance in Oslo, had been shot and wounded by Norwegian police.

Witnesses told a Norway broadcaster that a baby in a pram was among those hit. But the baby is, reportedly, being treated in hospital. Oslo police are searching for a second person, believed to be female, who may have been involved. But this has not yet been confirmed by the authorities. Police said

on Twitter just after 1pm: “Shots were fired to stop the perpetrator, who is not critically injured.” Witness Omar Khatuyev told Aftenposten he had to jump out of the way when the ambulance drove past him. “I saw it running at high speed opposite me,” he said. “I had to do a manoeuvre to avoid a collision. Just behind the ambulance came a uniformed police car, and I heard several shots. After a short time, I arrived at the place where the ambulance was stopped, in Krebs gate.”

Car vandalism did not

relate to Tenerife port OVER the last week, a video, featuring parked-up vehicles being vandalised, has circulated around Spain on Social Media and has gone viral, giving Tenerife a bad reputation. The video clearly shows two young men, vandalising cars and smashing their wing mirrors. To the viewer, it seemed as though the vehicles were parked in a port, and for some reason, the conclusion by many was that the incident happened in Tenerife’s Santa Cruz port.

In fact, the incident occurred at Valencia’s Port of Sagunto, and police were able to confirm that the pair’s reckless behaviour, circulating across the social media and tarnishing Tenerife, was a hoax. Family members of the two youngsters, who claimed they were drunk at the time of the incident, presented themselves at the police station and took responsibility for the damaged vehicles. Both men have since admitted their actions, and they no longer have an Instagram account.

PUBLIC transport in Tenerife has been involved in highlighting breast-cancer awareness throughout October, building up to International Breast Cancer Day, which took place last Friday, inspiring thousands of people to wear pink for the day. Buses and trams on the island were decorated with posters and adverts for The Breast Cancer Association in Tenerife (Amate), saying prevention was better than cure. Tenerife Cabildo joined the Amate awareness campaign to celebrate the

World Day Against Breast Cancer (18th Oct), while Metrotenerife and Titsa collaborated in showing the image of the campaign “Prevention, the greatest gesture of love” on tram stops and on the rear of buses, running through the north of the island. Cabildo President Pedro Martín stressed: “This was a day to value the advances of science in the fight against this disease. It also influences the strength of all people, especially women who face this disease, and they help others do it. This harbours the hope that the disease has a solution.” Tragically, one in eight women in Spain will develop breast cancer throughout her life.

Frightened immigrants saved by the Red Cross and other volunteers

Magic App will mean drivers can keep their

licences back at home THE Red Cross, alerted by the emergency services and the ERIE, an emergency response team specialising in humanitarian assistance, were on stand-by at Los Cristianos port on Sunday night. They were awaiting the arrival of a small vessel, carrying 33 immigrants aboard, comprising19 males and six females, all frightened, along with five young boys and three girls. Among the boys was an 11-month-old baby, who, along with the youngest female, aged four, was taken to El Mojon Hospital in Los Cristianos for observation, as per protocol. A total of 21 volunteers were available to collaborate with the Red Cross and ERIE.

DRIVERS will soon be able to leave their driving licences at home when they are in the car, but only if they have a mobile phone on which they can download Apps. Today’s law requires motorists to carry their licences with them when at the wheel, and carries a €100 fine for failure to do so. And, statistically, “offenders” are more likely to be women. Each time they use a different handbag or switch purses, they have to remember to put their licence in the bag they are carrying. But men are more likely to keep theirs in the wallet they use all the time, no matter what the colour of shoes or outfit they are wearing. Failing to renew a licence when it is due, every 10 years for a Spanish one up to the age of 70, then every five years thereafter, and being caught with an out-of-date version, can lead to fines of €200, while having a non-valid licence can cost €500. This is something British nationals, especially on holiday, will have to bear in mind after Brexit, since their UK licences will no longer be valid for driving in Europe. They will need to obtain an international motoring permit from the Post Office before each trip. And if they intend to live permanently in Spain or any other EU country, they’ll need to exchange their licences for those issued by the State they reside in. Fines are even stiffer if the person not possess a licence, through being banned, having had their permit withdrawn on health grounds, or not yet having passed a test, and can even lead to a suspended jail sentence on top. But Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), part of the Ministry of Public Works, has announced a new App is being

developed, which enables drivers show their licences to police on their screens if they are stopped. The App also allows for paying fines and checking points totals. In Spain, drivers start off with 12 points and lose a set number for offences, leading to a ban when they have wiped out all 12, which is a reverse of the UK system. The App has many other virtues, and it also allows the user to upload his or her vehicle registration documents, as well as showing them in digital format if requested by police or ITV centres. At the moment, vehicle registration documents also have to be carried in the car at all times, and photocopies. But photocopies, even stamped by a notary to prove they are a true copy, are not acceptable if stopped by police, or when undergoing an ITV test. This is always a concern in case the car is stolen or catches fire, since it can hold up an insurance claim. Also, thieves may be able to find a way of selling-on the vehicle, or reregistering it in his or her name, But the App means the owner/driver will be able to show a digital copy of the paperwork, which will be a most welcome move. The App will be called MiDGT (“My DGT”, rather than “midget”) and full details of it are not yet confirmed; nor is the date when it may go live, although this is expected to be imminent as it is currently under construction. It is likely to be compatible with iPhone and Android operating systems, and it is hoped that these will include all types of mobile, even older ones, although, clearly, it will not be available to drivers whose devices are of the original, nonsmartphone variety, purely designed for making calls and sending text messages. This said, the App may be available for downloading on to a tablet, or even laptop, and available for use offline.

It’s much cheaper to buy than rent in Spain today

Transport Department chief Pere Navarro

Transport chief Navarro doubts new electric cars THE Spanish Transport Department (DGT) has cast major doubts over the country’s electric car ambitions. Although usually an optimist, DGT chief Pere Navarro said the Government had “made a mistake” with its support of electric cars.

BUYING a property now is cheaper than renting in most parts of Spain, according to calculations by global estate agency Century 21, which is based in Barcelona and Portugal. In 15 major cities, it is far cheaper to pay a mortgage than to cough up rent, say the estate agents. According to their findings, in none of the major cities did the cost of a mortgage come above 31% of the average family earnings. In some cities, such as Merida, the rental price is as low as 8% of the average salary, the survey discovered. In Sevilla, the cost of buying

with a mortgage came to just 19% of the average salary, which is €2,671 a month, while in Valencia it was just 16% of €2,776. Rental outlay in the same two cities, meanwhile, came to 32% and 26% of monthly earnings. In Murcia, where the average salary is €2,683 a month, tenants are paying 20% on rent, while owners pay just 11% on a mortgage. Another example showed that the owners of a 90-sq/m apartment in Madrid pay a mortgage of €960 per month, while tenants are paying €1,419 per month, which is an alarming 40% of a family’s income. Only Barcelona cost more to buy, at 44% of average earnings, while Mallorca capital Palma costs 34%.

“Renting has become a necessity for many people who can’t afford to buy.” said Ricardo Sousa, Century 21 chief. “Today, major cities around the world face the challenge of providing affordable and adequate solutions. “This is especially the case in large cities, such as Madrid and Barcelona, where there is strong population growth, while housing options with affordable prices are scarce.” Rental costs in Spain have jumped by 50% over the last five years, according to a Bank of Spain study, using data collected by Idealista. And nearly 23% of Spain’s population rent property, which is, significantly, less than the European average of 30%.

San Miguel donates €2,200

to local cancer charities The Department of Social Services in San Miguel are continuing to contribute to groups whose work and objectives are for the development of programmes and activities of a social nature.

This week they signed a collaboration agreement and made a donation of €2,200 to the Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer (AMATE), which also has municipal facilities for the development of its work, and with the Carrera por la Vida Foundation. Both entities work to raise

awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer and to help make ends meet for the affected people and their families. The mayor has said he

hopes that this initiative from the municipality of San Miguel continues for a long time, raising awareness and assisting the great work being done by these groups.

“We made the mistake of selling a product which we did not have on the shelf,” said the Civil Servant. “We have nowhere to plug it in, and the price is very expensive. “We are all wrong!” Navarro criticised the lack of “adequate” charging points across Spain, with the last estimate putting the number at 5,000. He also said that before politicians try to encourage buyers to purchase new

electric cars, the Government needs to deal with the issue of “low wages”. His comments were made, despite a 61% increase in electric car sales since 2017, with 13,882 electric vehicles bought in Spain last year. There have also been new inroads made by Spanish manufacturers such as SEAT, which has just launched the first electric version of its classic Ibiza model. Navarro was criticising expensive electric cars like the Audi e-tron, which costs €82,400. But there are more affordable green vehicles like Peugeot’s Ion, on sale for €21,852. However, despite a pessimistic overall tone, Navarro celebrated the DGT’s 60th year of existence by saying: “The new culture of young people will be the future for electric cars in Spain.”

Midget porn star

knifed ‘partner’ A PORN-STAR midget was arrested after stabbing a man she said was her boyfriend, when she caught him in bed with another woman. Cheryl Murphy, 39, was arrested for going into her love rival’s home to carry out the attack on Jesse James, who awoke when Murphy, also known as Bridget the Midget, stabbed him in the leg with a butter knife. It is alleged that she then started trying to attack Jesse’s lover, who has not been identified, with the same weapon. Neighbours heard screaming in the street and saw Murphy throwing a barbecue grill at the windows of the Las Vegas flat, around the corner from her own home. She could also be heard shouting: “I have nothing more to lose, Jesse. You took it all from me, adding: “There’s blood everywhere. Please call the cops.” Moments later police arrived and took her into custody in the early hours. The 3ft 9in adult film star was seen walking away with a police officer shortly after 2.30am,

allegedly telling police: “It’s my fault, I did it all. I should go to jail.” She was later charged with burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon, and battery, with use of a deadly weapon, as well as assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say she faces from two to 15 years in jail. The incident is believed to have happened at the home of Jesse James’ lover. And when asked if she lived there, Murphy said she didn’t, but another woman shouted: “No, she does not! She’s trying to stab my boyfriend to death, so please call the cops.” The girlfriend also claimed that Murphy tried to stab her. James was taken to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, and has since been allowed home. He told police that he and the other woman had been out drinking and they went back to her home to sleep. But he was woken when Murphy stabbed him in the leg. Her next court appearance is on 7th November.

Ryanair has confirmed 432 staff redundancies Royal family greetings for a fallen paratrooper chief A PARACHUTIST, who crashed into a lamp-post on his descent, had his pains eased with a hug from Spain’s female Defence Minister… and a personal greeting from the King and Queen at last Saturday’s military parade in Madrid.

It was the biggest national event to mark what has more recently been known as Spanish National Day. It used to be referred to as “Hispanic Day”, marking the 12th October date of the “discovery” by Christopher Columbus of the Americas, and all it signified. But lately, it has been considered insensitive to Spain’s Latin American residents who, clearly, do not consider colonialism anything to celebrate. The parade was certainly eventful, and lucky for Luis Fernando Pozo, chief of the Paratroopers Brigade, BRIPAC, who was carrying a giant

Spanish flag and was just about to land, when he collided with a street light and became tangled in his ropes. Miraculously, Luis Fernando was unhurt, and, as he stepped away from the knotted parachute mass of his parachute, he was greeted with applause from the crowd, including the Royal family: King Felipe VI and his wife, Queen Letizia, along with daughters Leonor, 13 and Sofía, 12. Defence Minister Margarita Robles rushed to his side to make sure he was unscathed. She gave him a hug, and the monarchs followed suit, concerned about his welfare and greeting him personally during the line-up. The collision with the lamp post was so violent that the crash could be heard on live TV, but other than a little shaken, Luis Fernando was none the worse for his experience. But he was clearly emotional when meeting and chatting to the King and Queen.

RYANAIR, the Irish, low-cost airline, has confirmed that it will lay off 432 people in Spain, following the closure of its bases in Tenerife South, Gran Canaria, Girona and Lanzarote. The company first announced that it expected to make more than 500 redundancies, which has now been reduced. Even so, 327 cabin crew members and 105 pilots will be laid off, and, according to the USO trade union, 220 are crew members, hired directly by Ryanair, 85 crew members were hired by the Workforce agency and another 22 from Crewlink. The unions met with the company last week to negotiate a redundancy plan. The process will start in January, when the bases are scheduled to close. Ryanair actually moves most

passengers in Spain, especially in the islands, and the base closures does not rule out the company operating flights on these routes. Part of the problem is the cost implication of a delay in delivering the Boeing 737 Max planes, because the manufacturer is reviewing the model, after the fatal accidents two have experienced. As for Ryanair redundancies, Tenerife and Girona are the most affected bases, with 100 redundancies in each, followed by Gran Canaria (69) and Lanzarote (58). Two new dates have been set for the start of negotiations: today (Friday) and next Wednesday (30th Oct). The union said: “We have committed to doing everything possible to stop this process, or minimise the job losses. The closure of these bases led to a series of strikes in September, which had little impact on flights.”

the Romería de Adeje

Last Sunday, October 20th, eleven carts and fifteen folk and dance groups took part in the Traditional Pilgrimage in Adeje, and offered the patrons of the municipality the Virgens de la Encarnación, Santa Úrsula and San Sebastián.

After mass sung by a group from the Municipal School of Folklore of Adeje in the Santa Úrsula Mártir Church, the tour began in the well-known Plaza del Cerco, where the cattle fair took place earlier in the morning. The entourage was headed by San Sebastián accompanied by the Herrera Dancers, representatives from the municipal authorities, and youth and senior representatives of the different neighbourhoods of the borough.

The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga commented that “the fiestas are a meeting point for the farmers and vendors, and we have a promise, that we fulfill with devotion and joy, giving the hospitality that has always characterised this town.” He added that “the Romería puts an end to our 2019 fiestas that celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the coronation of Our Lady the Virgin of La Encarnación. They are milestones in our history that mark the future and shape our identity, which is why they have special relevance and meaning, to remind us of the inherited commitment and invite us to plan a better present and without a doubt, a more hopeful future”.

Man kills wife,

then himself!

A MAN aged 43 is believed to have shot his 40-year-old wife to death, before turning the gun on himself last Sunday, in their La Zubia home in Granada, Andalucia. Guardia Civil officers revealed that the bodies were found by the couple’s daughter, who, initially, called the authorities to sound the alarm. The pair had two children, both thought to be over 16. But there were no previous reports of domestic violence, although Guardia agents have opened a routine investigation.

Silence please,

Pensioner, 73, was part of a drug-dealing team THREE men, aged 37 and 43, along with a 73-yearold pensioner, have been charged by the National Police with dealing cocaine, crack crystal meth and hashish, all illegal substances, which they intended to sell from a Gran Canaria apartment.

The Canarian Police chief said the probe began after fellow officers gained information about the

sales of illegal substances being sold from an apartment, close to a public park in which many adolescents frequented. Investigations revealed that there were three individuals operating from the apartment, selling several types of drugs to consumers, who came knocking. The officers, happy with the information they had received, then requested a mandatory court order to enable them to

search the premises, which they did, finding 60 doses of crack, 12 doses of cocaine, 2 grams of Crystal 33 of hashish. Also found were €975 in cash and 12 mobile phones, along with various utensils that had been used to measure and cut the substances. The police charged all three men with drug distribution, as well as crimes against public safety.

no clapping! STUDENTS at the University of Oxford have passed a motion to ban clapping, because it could trigger “anxiety”. Instead, it will be replaced by “jazz hands”, in which students wave their hands in the air.

The motion to encourage silent clapping was passed, successfully, by the university’s student union officers, following Tuesday’s first meeting of the year. Students had argued that alternatives to clapping already existed in some organisations and institutions, and that they should follow suit.

Pound soars as UK and EU reach a Brexit deal By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. The past couple of weeks have seen the pound race higher, as political developments and successful UK-EU negotiations greatly reduced the odds of a no-deal Brexit. This saw the GBP/EUR exchange rate surge from 1.11 to 1.16, with EUR/GBP retreating to 0.86. Meanwhile, GBP/USD skyrocketed from 1.22 to 1.30, while EUR/USD jumped from 1.09 to 1.11. What’s been happening? The pound performed a dramatic comeback over a two-week span, rebounding from a one-month low, to strike its best levels since midMay. Sterling’s stellar recovery

keys into a dramatic shift in UK-EU Brexit talks and a flurry of positive developments, culminating in a breakthrough deal agreement, last week. The euro also benefited from positive Brexit developments, which helped to offset pressure exerted by gloomy, economic data. Finally, the US dollar faced some persistent selling over the past couple of weeks, on the back of positive US-China trade headlines, and firming expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut. What do you need to look out for? While the UK and EU may have reached a consensus, the Brexit saga is far from over. Expect more volatility after the deal faced a “meaningful vote” in parliament, and the question of an extension still looms. The euro could face headwinds in the coming weeks, with traders keeping a wary eye on Eurozone data, particularly the bloc’s latest GDP figures. Meanwhile, USD investor

focus will be on the Federal Reserve, with the bank widely expected to deliver another rate cut this month, potentially keeping pressure on the US dollar. At Currencies Direct, we’re here to talk currency

whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news, or how it could impact your currency transfers. Since 1996, we’ve helped more than 250,000 customers with their currency transfers.

Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist

With exclusive access to the behind-thescenes workings of one of Britain’s most iconic fashion houses and an unprecedented cast of real life characters, BBC Two’s Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist is an untold story of a global icon - the grand dame of punk and the enfant terrible of British fashion. A self-proclaimed daydreamer, Vivienne Westwood came from humble beginnings in the north of England, arriving in London at 17 in the midst of the swinging 60s. Her life changed course dramatically when she met Sex Pistols Manager and impresario Malcolm McLaren and their Kings Road shop launched punk, and revolutionised popular culture. This fascinating film witnesses the successes, the conflicts and the insecurities she faces today, skipping back to key biographical moments. Patterns and parallels emerge between her 21st century activism and the inherently anti-establishment punk rock ethos of her youth. This is an intimate and inspiring portrait of a true British icon: a single mother, a punk and an agent provocateur.

When brothers Max and Jake unwittingly run over and kill an old man, their attempts to cover it up trigger consequences neither of them could ever have imagined. Guilt is a new four-part drama from Scotland, with riveting plot twists and a strong vein of black humour. In a residential street in Edinburgh, two disparate brothers, high flying lawyer Max (Mark Bonnar) and Jake (Jamie Sives), a record shop owner, accidentally run down an old man, Walter, on their way home from a wedding. Uninsured and under the influence, Jake is persuaded by Max to cover up their deathly deed. However, their hopes that the death will be passed off as natural causes are dashed when neighbours and relatives begin to suspect Walter’s death wasn’t as innocent as it seems. The brothers find their lives rapidly falling apart as their actions begin to catch up with them. Their increasingly desperate attempts to conceal their guilt leads them further into a world where everyone seems to have a hidden agenda and they discover they can trust no-one - including each other.

CW Strictly Come Dancing BBC1, 19.15 Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman return to the ballroom to reveal the results of last night’s frighteningly fabulous Halloween special. The judges scores and viewers votes will be added together to form tonight’s leader board. The two couples with the lowest votes will then face each other in the dread-

ed dance off. The power is then in the hands of judges Shirley Ballas, Bruno Tonioli, Craig Revel-Horwood and Motsi Mabuse, as they decide who leaves the competition. There’ll also be a dark and dramatic group dance from the Strictly professionals, as well as a musical performance from Adam Lambert, singing his new single Superpower.

BBC2, 20.00 Britain’s Biggest Warship Goes To Sea

HMS Queen Elizabeth is Britain’s biggest ever warship, taking nine years to build, at a cost of £3.5 billion. Returning for a new series, this time we follow the nearly 1,500 sailors, marines and aviators on their first trans-Atlantic crossing - a make-or-break four-month deployment on the high seas. Their mission is to forge the brand-new ship’s company into an effective fighting force and their main mission will be to test the top-secret F-35B Lightning Stealth Fighter - the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world that will give the ship its lethal sting. Embedded within the ship’s company throughout the deployment is award-winning director/cameraman Chris Terrill, who captures an intimate and personal portrait of life on board. Episode one. Leaving her home port of Portsmouth, tens of thousands turn out to bid HMS Queen Elizabeth farewell, but as she heads over the horizon no one has any idea what lies ahead. Within hours a Russian warship is detected and the British ship needs to take immediate evasive action. Later, in mid-ocean, the ship’s company has to deal with floods and dangerous fuel leaks, but eventually the Queen Elizabeth glides majestically in to Mayport Naval Station in Florida, USA. Over a thousand British sailors flood ashore taking the local bars by storm and the police by surprise.

Who Are You Calling Fat?

CW

BBC2, 21.00

In the second episode, the group turn their attention to the wider implications of obesity and consider what, if anything, should be done to help. Babs begins to confront her disordered eating habits and reveals that, for her, binge eating feels like a drug addiction. Marathon runner Del decides to share the details of his bariatric surgery with the rest of the group. He’s now lost 10 stone and credits the surgery with saving his life. But not everyone in the group is impressed, and Victoria, who strongly opposes the procedure, calls it ‘stomach amputation’. The group are visited by geneticist Dr Giles Yeo who uncovers how some of the group’s genes may have gone some way to contributing to their weight. The arrival of two Parliamentarians working on the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Obesity causes friction as the group struggle to agree on what the future should look like for people living in bigger bodies. It’s stand-up comedian Jed’s 29th birthday and he celebrates by doing a spot at a local club. But will the rest of the group appreciate his self-deprecating humour that laughs at his own weight?

While in Ealing, West London, response officers go the aid of a frequent caller complaining about her husband. In Peckham, South London, a 39 year-old man is found slumped in a passage way with a single stab wound to his heart. When officers arrive at the scene they follow a trail of blood up to a flat, where they find another man injured in bed, and five other men who are all resident there. DS Nigel Tolson from the Murder Investigation team is brought in to investigate. All six men are arrested as suspects and interviewed, but five of the men are soon released except the man found injured in bed. The detectives don’t think his story stands up, but with no forensic evidence, they need to prove he’s lying. In recent years there has been a rise in domestic abuse cases involving, violent, coercive and controlling behaviour. These cases are dealt with by the Met’s Community Safety Unit and in North London their investigation involves a 47 year-old woman who has made an allegation that she has been emotionally, physically and financially abused by her friend and her friend’s father. It’s a complex case and the team need to assess if the allegations are true and bring the suspects in for questioning.

British boy dies in Spain after falling seven floors LOCAL media have reported that a 15-year-old schoolboy fell to his death from a seventhfloor window in an apartment block in Andalusia’s Córdoba city, Southern Spain, while on a school exchange trip.

The incident happened at about 11.30pm last Saturday. ABC Córdoba reported that he lost his balance while trying to fix a window blind because, it was said, it was letting in too much light and disturbing his sleep in his host family’s house. The police are understood to be treating the death as accidental. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting his family.”

The youngster had been in the city for under a week, and was there on a language-exchange programme. An emergency services spokesman said: “We were alerted around 11.25pm on Saturday to say a person had fallen from a window at an apartment block in Calle Periodista Quesada Chacón. “Emergency services, including police and medical responders, were alerted. But the youngster was already dead when they arrived, following what police indicated was an accidental fall.” Inmaculada Troncoso, a local education official, said: “We deeply regret what has happened, and we are offering support to the school where the boy was, as well as to his family.”

Oh baby, what a shark!

10,000 Moroccan women bid for strawberry fields forever THE main attraction at El Medano beach for a week and more has been a small school of baby shark, who have found a safe haven in the shallows of the Granadilla beach. Four Gilthead sharks, approximately 1½ metres in length, have been spotted in the surf there, and, say regular beach-goers, the small shark have actually played in the waves alongside them. It means everyone is using the beach with absolutely no concern, especially as this species is not considered dangerous. However, the curious public are frequenting the pillars that support Hotel Medano, where the depth of the water doesn’t exceed a couple of feet, and where these baby shark have taken refuge, showing no signs of departing.

DESPITE reports of rights violations and sexual abuse, the opportunity to work in Spanish strawberry fields continues to appeal to many Moroccan female seasonal workers.

Some 19,000 women are expected to travel to Spain this year to work in strawberry fields, as part of a long-standing bilateral agreement between Madrid and Moroccan capital Rabat, according to reports. The number of migrant workers needed for the upcoming harvest season in Spain’s Andalusia region indicates a steady need for seasonal workers from Morocco. Each year, close to 20,000 travel to Spain as part of the agreement. The high numbers reflect the importance of the strawberry industry for the Spanish economy, but also the significance of Moroccan migrant workers to sustain the business, reports Morocco’s

Les Inspirations Eco newspaper. But the projected numbers tend to decrease slightly by the end of the recruitment process. The Les Inspirations paper noted that, for last year, almost 20,000 were expected to travel to Spain. But by the end of the recruiting and screening process, just 14,411 made the final cut. The first recruitment phase for this year should start by the end of November. And one is that there will be four recruitment rounds, up from three in recent years. The project is the fruit of strong co-operation between the Spanish Government and Morocco’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Integration. The partnership is usually labelled as a bilateral agreement, aimed at reducing Morocco’s high unemployment. The project has always appealed to thousands of Moroccan rural women. But in the past months and years, however, there

have been numerous complaints of sexual abuse, exploitation, and unpaid labour. “In Morocco, they are deliberately looking for those who are cheap and vulnerable to do this work,” one woman recently told the Guardian newspaper. “These are rural women with young children, who only understand Arabic, cannot understand their contracts written in Spanish or claim their rights.” Even though the project legacy has been stained by repeated reports of abuse and exploitation, the extremelyhigh unemployment rate in Morocco means the project continues to appeal to many in the country. Earlier this year, Morocco set up a committee to deal with the recurring exploitation and sexual abuse complaints, vowing to pre-empt a repeat of previous scandals, and defend the rights of the women it sends, annually, to Spanish strawberry fields.

Spanish officers cause

huge stir in Gibraltar

GIBRALTAR is in uproar after a video, purporting to show a group of Spanish officers having crossed the border in their car “without being stopped”, went viral last weekend.

In the video, the four Proteccion Civil agents can be seen getting into their vehicle, at around 5.10pm, while escorted by two British police officers. And Chief Minister Fabian Picardo demanded answers after seeing the clip, calling for “someone to take responsibility”. “The incident today, whereby Spanish ‘Proteccion Civil’ officers have not been stopped when driving across our border, is more than just

concerning,” the newlyelected leader wrote in a statement. “I am asking all relevant bodies to explain to me how on earth this has happened, and to ensure it does not happen again. This, frankly, is not acceptable. Our systems have failed today, and they must not fail again. Someone must take responsibility for this failure.” The Proteccion Civil vehicle had been reported to police after being seen in the country, and the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP) found the car in Governor’s Street. The four Spanish agents were later questioned at New Mole House, before being taken back to the frontier. Spain’s Proteccion Civil has yet to make a statement, but the investigation continues.

Steroids’ dealer, who supplied a local gym UNDERCOVER officers, attached to the Local Police, have revealed that illegal steroids have been sold in a La Laguna gymnasium, and that a 37-year-old Spaniard has been arrested.

He was charged with crimes against public health, after officers discovered that he was carrying steroids and recreational drugs. They caught him near the gym in the Taco area of San Luis Gonzaga, between the Paris road and Maria Luisa. The arrest was a simple affair because the officers had been given information about a man selling illegal doping products to clients, who also frequented the gym. And, unfortunately for the accused, one his clients was an undercover officer! When arrested, the suspect had in his possession 25 grams of hashish, and two boxes containing 23 phials of anabolic steroids, known to many as testosterone and androlone. He was also carrying cash and a mobile phone. He was taken to the cells at La Laguna’s National Police Station, where he

Major police alert over dodgy euro ‘film’ notes

National online security Helpline is now available A FREE national cyber-safety Helpline number has been launched in Spain, and those who suffer threats to their online security can call if necessary. The three-digit number is also available for reporting internet fraud, phishing, hack attacks or dodgy websites of any description. It can even be used to glean knowledge and advice about security for computers, phones and tablets, or any other internet-based device, says the Ministry for Business and the Economy. The 017 number is based on the format used for the 016 domestic and gender violence helpline, which does not show up on an itemised bill, and the 112 emergency services number, which is the same as in most other countries across the European continent. In practice, the 017 line merely replaces the nine-digit number, formerly used to contact the National Cyber Safety Institute, INCIBE, to make it easier to remember. The main purposes of the Helpline, according to an announcement in the Spanish Government’s daily bulletin, are for seeking methods and

tools for protecting data, inquiring about safety of WiFi connections and networks, configuration of privacy in internet services and devices, as well as digital identity protection. It can also be used for identifying different types of online fraud, and advising users who have been affected by virus, malware and spyware infections, and to clarify concerns or doubts about content, which may or may not be dangerous, or inappropriate, for children. Parents, teachers and children themselves can call the number to report online bullying and, in the case of the first two groups, request information about parental controls on devices. They can also check whether their kids’ screen use is excessive. For example, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that children aged two and under do not use screens. The free, nine-digit INCIBE number, 900 116 117, remains operative, and the same call centre is reached by dialling this, as by dialling 017. The line, in use 365 days a year, is open from 9am-9pm (mainland Spain time, and (8am- 8pm in the Canary Islands).

SPANISH Police have issued an alert over false euro notes, used as film props, which have been appearing all over the country. The money, in denominations of five and ten euros, look authentic, but bear these words in English: “This is not legal tender, it’s used for motion props.” Businesses and shops have already fallen victim to the scam, even though the warning on the note is clearly legible. Police are warning people, including tourists, to be on their guard. They have also been investigating how they got into circulation. They say the notes were made for use in films, as well as

commercials, and are of poor quality when inspected closely. Most of the fake money is in €5 and €10 bills, but some are of more value, including €20 and €50 notes. However, these are not being used as much because businesses tend to give them greater scrutiny, and there is more chance of the culprits being caught. They are advising anyone finding one of these notes to take it to the nearest police station, and police have also circulated their alert via Twitter. One person already duped said some of the false notes were given to them, sandwiched between a wad of genuine euros. But police warn that is an offence to knowingly pass off any of these “film” notes as real.

Moped rider faced right way, but helmet didn’t! NUMEROUS members of the public, along with other road-users, reported to officials on Sunday that they had witnessed a woman, riding a moped around Santa Cruz. She was on a moped and wearing an obligatory crash-helmet, and there was nothing wrong with that… except that she was wearing it back to front! The woman was using a rented moped, which have become popular in Tenerife’s capital, because of the moped company’s easy-touse policy, which allows the rider to park it up wherever he or she chooses. A company employee will then collect the machine when it is convenient for him, making the rental a most convenient way of getting around the city centre. But many observers believed the woman wasn’t aware of her actions, or aware that she could have caused herself serious harm, had she been involved in a traffic accident.

Meet Pinky!

JUST two days into the start of this year, this black beauty arrived. She had been found wandering around Granadilla, by a young girl, who kept her for a couple of nights to see if she could find the owner. She wasn’t successful. She brought her to K9 and we named her Pinky. She is a medium-large, mixed breed, and we think she is 2-3 years old. When she first arrived she was very scared, agitated and confused, which is understandable, and we all did our very best to make her feel secure and safe. Around the same time she was brought to K9, a male dog was left tied up outside the shelter. Those of you who come and walk the dogs will know Kaiser. He was very chilled in the kennels, so we decided to match the two of them up, and they worked well together. Kaiser seemed to calm her down a little bit. Pinky can be very tense and anxious in the kennels, and can bark at other dogs, particularly males.

Cats Welfare News

But, once outside, she is a very sweet, playful girl who loves human attention, and just wants a second chance at a loving, forever home. She does have a lot of energy, so would need a daily walk. There are moments when we catch her playing with Kaiser in the kennels, and it is very funny to watch, and it shows, when she is relaxed, just how fun and sweet she can be. She really enjoys being taken for walks, and our amazing volunteers often take her and Kaiser to the beach, for a break away from the kennels. She is a little bit afraid of the water, so we are trying to build up her confidence with this, and we are hoping her new owners would be willing to continue to do so. She is heartworm positive, but this can be easily managed with medication. Can you help us find her a new loving forever home? We do not know how she ended up wandering around Granadilla, but she didn’t deserve to be left alone. Please help us, and let’s get Pinky out of the kennels so she can feel all the love in the world. You can visit any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! Accion del Sol News

Our girls are aiming high TWO fabulous volunteers, Hayley Butler and Sarah Wagstaff, who walk our shelter dogs every weekend, have taken up a personal challenge, the Teide 10kg, for Live Paws (Rescued Animals Tenerife).

An upsetting time THIS lovely, gentle dog, Darwin, is so sad. He was brought to the refuge because his owner died, suddenly, of a heart attack.

He’s very lonely and unhappy, and needs a loving new home as soon as possible. He’s very confused and doesn’t understand what has happened to his owner. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free. They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best

start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please never let your dog breed. If we all help the dogs in the full refuges, we can make a difference! Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219 or 602463242, between 8am5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol

He’s waiting for you! THIS little boy is about six months old. He has been deflead and wormed, had his first vaccinations and been neutered. He is a very friendly little lad, with a HUGE fluffy tail! Adoption We have several other kittens available for adoption, and one way of getting to see some of them is to pop along to Koala Sur, next to the Farmers’ Market in Las Chafiras. A fabulous area has been set aside for them to frolic to their hearts’ content, with fantastic play equipment, and even two

very comfortable armchairs! It is a perfect environment for the public to interact with them, to help them decide as to whether they feel adoption to be a good idea. Give them a ring on 922 712 425, to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 6712 82773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 6625 24006, if you would like to enquire about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs.

They are hiking up to the volcano summit of Teide on a twoday trek on 28th-29th October, between them dropping 10kg in weight, whilst training. They are going through this gruelling challenge to raise money for Live Arico PAWS. Please support the girls by either donating via PayPal at Livearico@ gmail.com, or on the fundraising Facebook page Teide 10kg for Live Arico. You can also donate at either of our two charity shops. Time for a change Live Arico PAWS is going to alter its logo with a slight change of name. There are a few reasons; we have not had a shelter in Arico for 15 years, and we are situated in San Miguel. This causes confusion with local authorities and people trying to find the shelter, either with dogs they find abandoned, or to look for a new pet. There are also a couple of our fellow rescue centres actually located in that area. Legally, we’ll still be called Live Arico, but, from next year, for promotional purposes, answering the phone, giving directions etc., we’ll be known as Live Paws (Rescued Animals Tenerife). We will carry on rescuing, caring for and seeking adopters for the animals in our care, as usual. Dog-walking club Join the Live Arico dog-walking club on Saturday mornings from 9am-1pm. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you can keep fit and find a furry friend at the same time. Please come and meet the dogs. They have a fabulous time with the walkers, and look forward to going out for a wander. Please feel free to pop along, even for a chat. If you have any questions, send a WhatsApp to Mark on 6522 97853, for further details. Live Arico shops Come and bag a bargain at our shops. Donations are always very much appreciated. San Eugenio - opposite Hotel La Nina, at Las Carabelas, near Amanda’s Bar. Open weekdays 10am-4pm, Saturday 10am-2pm and now Sundays 11am-3pm. Los Cristianos - Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and play-park. Open Monday-Friday (10am-4pm), Saturday 10am-2pm. The shop is now open on Sundays from 11am-3pm. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Kitten Cages We are appealing to you all to make a small donation so that we can purchase some cages for our young kittens. Foster carers have been struggling, either fishing kittens out from under the bed, or with tiny cages (some designed for hamsters). The kittens, when very young, need to be contained, both for their own safety and easy accessibility. It also makes taming shy kittens that much easier. As the kittens get older, and more adventurous, they are let out several times a day

to explore their surroundings. If you are able to make a donation, no matter how small, it would be much appreciated. One cage is only €43, so, hopefully, we can purchase several. You can send money via PayPal at info@cats-welfaretenerife.com or call in at the shop. In both instances, please mark the money you give: “Cage Donation”. Thank you. Clothes required We need good quality ladies’ and men’s clothes. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. Our shop

We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, please ring Mark on 6365 90557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Wine and Dine

25th October - 31st October 2019

Pick up a pineapple! THE pineapple (Ananas comosus) is an incredibly delicious and healthy tropical fruit. It originated in South America, where early European explorers named it after its resemblance to a pine cone.

This popular fruit is packed with nutrients, antioxidants and other helpful compounds, such as enzymes that can fight inflammation and disease. Pineapple and its compounds have been linked to many health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting immunity and speeding up recovery from surgery, among others. Picking the perfect, ripe pineapple at the grocery store can be a bit of a challenge. Unlike other fruits, there’s much more to check, beyond its colour and appearance. In fact, to ensure that you’re getting the best bang for

your buck, you should pay close attention to the texture, smell and weight of the fruit, as well. Check the colour When shopping at your local supermarket, be sure to look for pineapples that have vibrant and healthy green leaves, which are considered to be a sign of freshness. Ideally, the exterior should have a greenish-yellow hue, which can indicate that it’s fully ripe. This is because pineapples slowly change from green to yellow as they ripen, and they stop ripening after being picked. However, green pineapples may be ripe, in some cases, which is why it’s important to consider other factors beyond colour, when choosing your pineapple. Give it a squeeze Much like other fruits, the texture of your pineapple can be a dead giveaway, to help determine whether it’s fully ripe. A ripe pineapple should have a firm shell, but be slightly

soft with a bit of give, when you squeeze it. Pineapples that are completely solid or hard when squeezed are unlikely to be fully ripe. Smell it One of the best ways to tell if a pineapple is ripe and ready to enjoy is by smelling it. Ripe pineapples typically have a sweet smell at the bottom, right near the base of the fruit. If a pineapple doesn’t have any odour, it may mean that it’s not completely ripe. On the other hand, a pungent or bitter smell often indicates that the pineapple may be over-ripe. Assess the weight Checking the weight of your pineapple can be an effective strategy to help measure ripeness. Look for a pineapple that feels heavy for its size, which often means that it’s more ripe. In many cases, a heavy pineapple is a sign that it’s more juicy, which also means that it’s likely to be sweeter and more palatable.

Pull on the fronds An easy way to tell if a pineapple is fully ripe is to gently tug at the fronds, which are the large leaves that protrude from the top of the pineapple. According to some, the fronds should pull out very easily, if a pineapple is ripe and ready to enjoy.

Open Day - and why you should have an English will De Cotta Law, the Firm of English and Spanish Lawyers, with offices in the Canary Islands and Mainland Spain, are holding an Open Day in Tenerife on Tuesday 5th November 2019. On that day, only, De Cotta Law English Solicitor Jonathan Sutton will be available for FREE consultations on English and Spanish Wills, Probate and Inheritance, and Personal Injury. To book your private consultation, please call our office on 922 719 520, or send an email to tenerife@ decottalaw.net If you wish, we can check your existing English and Spanish wills, to make sure they deal with your assets, and protect the rights of your beneficiaries and family. Do you have assets in England or outside of Spain? In this case: • You should always have a Spanish will for Spanish assets; if this is over two years old, it is a good idea to get

it reviewed, due to changes in tax law and succession legislation • It is not a good idea to have a Spanish will covering your non-Spanish assets, due to the logistical difficulties in trying to get a grant of probate from the English Probate Registry on a Spanish will. • Using a Spanish will for assets outside of Spain is very expensive • The probability is that your Spanish will only covers Spanish assets (which is what we recommend). This could leave you with a partial intestacy, in respect of assets outside of Spain • An English will can be used to cover assets in various jurisdictions (Gibraltar, Isle of Man, The Channel Islands, etc.), as well as the UK • An English will can be changed quite easily and inexpensively, as there is no need to sign it at a notary. Another important note: do not be tempted to make your own English will, or use the off-the-shelf will kits. This is not appropriate for anyone with

cross-jurisdictional affairs. We have seen many cases of people accidentally revoking or overwriting their Spanish wills, or not putting the required election of national law into the Will.

By Val Sainsbury OPIOID-RELATED overdoses are a top concern in the US, where they claim around 130 lives every day, according to data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. During this crisis, people have turned to alternative treatments for pain relief. A therapy that’s gaining ground is acupuncture, a form of traditional Chinese medicine that involves inserting needles into the skin. A safer way to relieve pain Acupuncture has been around for a long time. It has been studied and practised for well over 2,500 years, with practitioners using it to treat pain, boost wellbeing, and cure illnesses. An article even identified sharpened bones and stones to potentially be the earliest instruments for

25th October - 31st October 2019

Acupuncture won’t give you the needle! acupuncture. The minimally-invasive approach targets specific points in the skin, with needles to stimulate nerve-rich areas, and influence various functions in the body. Each acupuncture needle produces a tiny injury at the insertion site, and although it’s slight enough to cause little to no discomfort, it’s enough of a signal to let the body know it needs to respond. This response involves stimulation of the immune system, promoting circulation to the area, wound healing, and pain modulation. The World Health Organisation lists acupuncture as the mostwidely-practised form of alternative medicine. In its latest survey, over 113 WHO member states report the use of acupuncture, or having regulations in place for its practise. Recent studies have shown that over two-thirds of military hospitals now offer acupuncture, and a study found that more soldiers are open to nondrug treatments, including acupuncture, for treating chronic pain. These options can be a beacon of hope for military veterans, who, until a few years ago, were exclusively prescribed opioid painkillers. An analysis by the Centre for Investigative Reporting found that prescriptions for opioids leapfrogged by 270% in 12 years, leading to fatal overdose rates which were twice the national average. Prescription opioids also account for more than 35% of opioid-related

deaths, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. How acupuncture works The mechanism behind acupuncture’s ability to relieve pain has been the subject of multiple studies. In a study in the journal Medical Acupuncture, researchers from the University of Michigan suggested that acupuncture improves the connective tissue around the pressure points to reduce pain. Another study, from South Korea’s Daejeon University, highlights a potential link between acupuncture and the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve runs from the brain stem to the colon,

and it helps regulate the functions of internal organs. Acupuncture potentially stimulates the vagus nerve, which then lowers inflammation. Inflammation, in particular, is linked to chronic pain throughout the body. Currently, the National Institute of Health provides support for studies that look at potential uses of acupuncture for treating various conditions. While more studies are needed to fully unlock the health benefits of acupuncture, what is clear is that it’s a safer alternative for those looking for pain relief, compared with costlier (and riskier) conventional approaches.

Traditional repellents can smell terrible, and leave you sticky and uncomfortable. The good news is that if you’re looking for an all-natural option, there are quite a few to choose from. Here are five, natural ingredients you can use as a mosquito repellent, according to science:

CD Tenerife 3 Racing 3

Yoda scores equalising goal, he does! TENERIFE were again foiled at home last Sunday, throwing away a two-goal advantage and two points, against a Racing team who believed in themselves right until the final whistle, grabbing an equaliser in the 93rd minute.

That made it five games in a row for CDT without a win at the Heliodoro, after appearing to be cruising home. Coach López Garai went with Mazán, Lasso and Malbasic, who were not in the starting XI in Vallecas the week before. And, from the off, they put Racing under intense pressure, attacking down both sides, and allowing Nahuel and Bermejo to put crosses over for Lasso and Milla to attack Racing goalkeeper Luca Zidane. Tenerife, fast in their link-up play, confused Racing and, in the 13th minute, Bermejo hit a lovely chip over the opposition defence, into the path of Malbasic. He had one touch, then slotted it gracefully past Zidane to put the home side ahead, and it was nothing more than they deserved. But Garai’s men then allowed themselves to be dominated, yet they got away with it because Racing barely troubled Ortolá, beyond a loose shot from Kitoko. In fact, they doubled their lead in the 33rd minute. Luis Pérez broke down the right for the umpteenth time and pulled back an excellent ball to Bermejo, who was poised on the edge of the 18-yard box. He unleashed a rocket of a shot, which flew in to the top corner for a 2-0 lead. Tenerife looked as though they were cruising to a comfortable victory. Famous last words because, four minutes later, Racing pulled one back. Alberto gave the ball away just outside the Tenerife area, and Enzo Lombardo, was put through. He rounded Alberto, who was chasing back, and shot across goal, making it 2-1 after 37 minutes, and yet another defensive mistake at home by CDT. The second half continued in the same vein, and Tenerife attacked straight away. Pérez was again relentless on the right and chased down a long ball, which many would have given up on. Somehow, he put in a brilliant cross to the Racing box, where Borja Lasso connected with a diving header that gave Zidane no chance. That made it 3-1 to the home team in the 50th minute, and Tenerife again looked to be cruising. But Racing would not give up. Midfielder Cejudo scared Ortolá in the 55th minute, and, two minutes later, Lombardo scored his second of the afternoon, thanks to another Tenerife mistake.

Ortola miskicked the ball as he attempted to play it out, enabling Karim Yoda to pick it up for Racing and feed through to Lombardo, who, one-on-one with the keeper, scored at the near post to make it 3-2. So, with half-an-hour to go, Tenerife faced a game they should have closed off easily. To be honest, Racing weren’t brilliant, but they kept the faith, encouraged by their coach and a small group of travelling fans, who believed in them until the end. The Cantabrians did not create many scoring chances, and Ortolá had only to halt a distant shot from Carmona in the 88th minute, and it looked as though Tenerife would hold on. But then, as against Vallecano, an injury-time sucker-punch was delivered. Racing had a free-kick on the far right-hand side, which was taken by Cejudo, who put the ball right in to the danger zone. And the force was strong with Yoda, as he climbed higher than anyone else and headed home for the visitors in the 93rd minute to equalise at the final whistle. This result was a disaster for Tenerife, who now find themselves in the bottom four, in 19th place, with just 12 points from 12 games, and one win in five. Coach Garai must take some of the blame because, since their good start to the season, he has tinkered with the squad, and the formation. And though the three Tenerife goals were brilliant, their mistakes were awful. Can away form help Tenerife this season? Well, if it’s going to, they need a good result tomorrow (Saturday) against Mirandes, who have won their last two games.

Worldwide cyclists able to tackle tough rides indoors TENERIFE Cabildo’s Tourism Department is planning to promote a dozen simulated cycling routes on the island, which reproduce some of the most important itineraries for users of the famous Bkool simulator. It is one of the pioneering companies in the development and commercialisation of facilities for indoor sport worldwide, and, among the routes incorporated into the simulator are those of La Laguna; Teide (Portillo Bajo); Santa Cruz; San Andrés; Pico del Inglés; Garachico; Buenavista; Masca; Granadilla and Parador del Teide. Two of them will start from the northeast of Tenerife, another from the lower island and the last in the southern area. This initiative allows cyclists from around the world to travel to Tenerife, virtually, and ride different itineraries, especially those which pass through Teide, which always arouse much interest among professionals.

The experience combines the bike itself, which has an intelligent roller that imitates different situations, such as the slipstream, the slopes or the wind, with a simulation that brings realism to the 3D landscapes and the ability to connect with other users around the world to compete. You’ll find competitiors all over the world, via Google, and it is also possible to follow the location of riders at any time through a map in real time. Also added, to resemble even more the reality of this sport animation, are different virtual followers, which will help users throughout the test. With the incorporation of the Tenerife routes in the simulator, the island is in an excellent position to target indoor competitors. The beauty of the landscapes and the good climate, as well as the differences in altitude and the roads which are not well-travelled, are some of the positive values for professional cyclists, who have visited the island and tackled the fiercest of rides. Now, however, you can pit your wits against them, without even leaving home.

No harm in losing! IT didn’t go well for a few teams in last week’s round of matches, as a weakened Emerald B” demonstrated at Pas’O’Nadas International, losing 8-0 and taking just one leg.

Captain Jackie said: “Not our best night of darts, as the result shows.” But it can’t have been all bad because everyone looks happy in the photo. I don’t know whether that was down to the booze, or the tasty paella. It was definitely the paella for Lin, but, whisper it not, she must have had 2nds, 3rds and 4ths! Suters 20:30 Crew gave Ourplace Playboys a fine welcome, but not many points, because it finished 6-2 in their favour. Nathan’s 180 and a 177 certainly helped bring about that result. Suters’ Sam offered sporting words of encouragement, saying: “Really good night and some good games by all. Cheers everyone, and good luck for the rest of the season.” Sandys Bookie Boys were visited by Pas O Nadas A, whose Richard (Daddy Cool), and David (The Tartan Spartan) both knocked in 180s, as they took home a 7-1 win. But it may have been tighter than it looked, as Andy, from Pas’O’Nadas, put it: “A good night, which was closer than the score suggests. Thanks for a great night, boys.” Loch Inn Bullseyes v Sandys Bandits was postponed, but Mad Hatters were at home to Scooters & Chevys A”, and there isn’t really anything I can say, that isn’t covered by John Mcwhirter about Mad Hatters’ 7-1 success. He said: “The singles went the Hatters way’ 4-1, and they took the doubles and treble. Scooters were unlucky to catch them on a night when four of their five players

Legends p-p Gaffers # Team Hollywood Waterfall were on their A game. “A special mention for Janice (the pocket rocket) on her finishing, although all did very well. Thanks to Dee for the food and Simon for keeping the fluids coming on an ultra-hot night. And thanks also to Duncan and team for a good night, and great company.” The Pub travelled to the Waterfall, and obviously didn’t want to waste their trip, so although the comments were scattered with, “great night as usual”, and “good night, good food as always”, there was less generosity on the dartboard, and The Pub ran out 7-1 winners. Division 2 also had a few runaway winners. Ourplace Breakaways made good use of their home advantage against Clouseau’s, leading 4-1 lead after the singles and going on to record a 6-2 win. Scooters &Chevys B had an excellent night’s play, beating visiting Marilyns 7-1. But as we all know, you can still have a good night, despite losing a match. Apparently, everyone did, as

Laraine put it: “Great night had by all, and thanks Nikki for the yummy chilli and rice.” You must have noticed that the food gets nearly as much attention as the darts! Back to the darts, with Club Activo v The Club House. Graham John Mackerrrall puts it much better than I could, so here’s what he said: “Activo 5 Clubhouse 3, the Trebles going to Activo! This game was as tight as a duck’s bottom! Great night of darts with a great group of players! It was also the first game Clubhouse have lost this season! Many thanks for the good grub!” I don’t know how good Graham is at darts, but if we have a “quote” competition, he will be a hot favourite. Pas’O’Nadas welcomed the Pink Elephant team to Los Abrigos, and despite the visitors missing a couple of their top players, they managed a 6-2 win. But perhaps the plaudits should also go to Tony, of Pas O Nadas, who had an excellent game in the singles.
