Airline will offer huge boost for our tourism

Continued from Front

During the low season, some 200,000 seats will be offered, rising to 330,000 in summer. That nearly doubles the number available across airlines throughout the islands, which will rise to 773,000 in winter alone. Yaiza Castilla, the Canary Islands’ Regional Tourism Minister, heralds this as “great news”, because it means a total of 1.8 million flight seats will be available, year-round, to and from the archipelago. Of these, 1.1 million will be

Jet2 passengers between April and October 2020, not counting the rest of the year, said Ms Castilla, following a meeting she and Regional President Ángel Víctor Torres held at London’s World Travel Market (WTM) with Jet2’s Janice Matter, Managing Director for airports and tourism organisations, and Ian Doubtire, head of Business Development. At present, Jet2, the Leedsbased carrier, operates from a further eight UK airports and has become the No.1 airline between Britain and the

Canary Islands, transporting 1.3 million passengers in 2018. Its decision to invest further in the Canary Islands is most welcome following the Thomas Cook collapse, which saw one of the region’s other main UKbased carriers and package holiday organisers cease all trade, suddenly, overnight. Jet2’s new base may also soften the blow for the region, if Irish airline Ryanair does go ahead with its announced plans to close two of its own bases in the Canary Islands.

Noisy man’s ‘gun’ threats

A ROWDY man was arrested after appearing to threaten a woman with a shotgun in the middle of the street in El Fraile, next to Las Galletas. Neighbours alerted the authorities after hearing him shout threatening

obscenities in the middle of the small town, and Guardia Civil officers, collaborating with Arona’s Local Police, detained him. In fact, officers were at the scene almost immediately, preventing the situation from getting out of hand.

Swimmer drowns in a complex pool

A MAN drowned on Wednesday afternoon while swimming in a Golf del Sur pool, attached to the apartment complex in which he lived. A call was received by the emergency services at around 4.30pm, telling the operator that the man had just been pulled out of the complex swimming pool unconscious. Two ambulances were dispatched to San Miguel’s

Golf del Sur immediately, while a doctor, present in the call-centre room, explained basic, step-by-step CPR instructions, to the caller. That enabled the caller to assist the swimmer until the ambulances arrived. Once there, the medical teams employed a more advanced resuscitation technique, using a semi-automatic defibrillator. Unfortunately, they were unable to revive him, and could only confirm his death. Guardia Civil officers were at the scene to take over the corresponding proceedings.

Drinker trips on bar steps

A WOMAN aged 45 was seriously injured after her car shot straight across the TF-28 (km-87), inside the Arona municipality, approaching Valle San Lorenzo, from the San Miguel direction, and came to a halt on a steep slope. The emergency services were notified swiftly, and were told of the driver’s dilemma. Surprisingly, though, she was able to get out of her car unaided. But fire-fighters, at the scene by then, helped

her reach the medical team, who were waiting to assess her injuries. They soon discovered that the victim had broken bones, as well as suffering a serious abdominal injury. She was taken to Candelaria

Hospital immediately. Guardia Civil officers and the Local Police were at the scene to assist with clearing the congested traffic, as well as removing the woman’s vehicle from the precarious area.

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was hurt badly on Tuesday morning, after tumbling as he left a popular Arona bar in Calle Francisco Andrade Fumero. He had fallen through a hole in the steps, accidently, and the emergency services received a call

requesting an ambulance. Once there, medics assessed the man, who was in a bad way. He had suffered severe bruising and was taken to Hospiten Sur, the Las Americas hospital, for treatment and further observation.

Clean-up at La Caleta a polished manoeuvre

THE La Caleta beach clean-up last Saturday, organised by Canary Green, attracted over 100 participants, keen to help with this environmental initiative, not only to clear the area of plastics, but to spread the word on the importance of coastal care. The event was sponsored by Hotel Suite Villa María, Tenerife Top Training and Golf Costa Adeje, with the institutional support of Adeje Town Hall, through its Parks and Gardens, and Ecological Transition departments, headed by Councillors Maikel Álvarez and Daniel Melo, who ensured that the correct materials and logistics were in place for the operation. Cleaning began at 11am, for about 90 minutes, and both Councillors extended their thanks for the involvement of the area’s business sector, affirming: “We hope this example will be extended, and, above all, that more awareness is created about the care of our environment.” © Photographs: Phil Crean

Spoiled turtle given free journey home

AN endangered turtle, carried all the way from the Canary Islands to the Irish beaches of Galway’s Connemara by Atlantic storms, has been flown to its Gran Canaria home by Ryanair.

The Irish Examiner reported that the Loggerhead turtle, known affectionately as Mara, was found in severe distress on Dolan’s Beach, in Roundstone, by local woman Linda Hederman. She took the female reptile to Clifden’s Western Veterinary, where she was treated for hypothermia overnight, before being taken to Dingle Oceanworld to recuperate. After a seven-week recovery, the hard-shelled turtle was flown home on the airline’s early-morning flight, from Cork airport to Gran Canaria. During the four-hour flight, Mara was coated in Vaseline to keep her hydrated, wrote the Examiner, and kept in an aerated box. The turtle was

accompanied by two staff from Dingle Oceanworld, as well as vet Shónagh O’Sullivan, who volunteered to make the trip to ensure her good health. The Loggerhead sea turtle is the world’s largest hardshelled species. Fully-grown adults average about 350kg in weight, and some specimens have reached up to 450kg. They are found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean, and need warm water to survive, which is what made Mara’s predicament so precarious. The Loggerhead is considered an endangered species by

the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, with the greatest threat to their survival being loss of nesting habitats to coastal development. Mara, in poor health when found, put on about a kilo in weight under the care of Dingle Oceanworld, and she now weighs a healthy 3kg. Before boarding her flight, she needed a health certificate and her own specially-issued passport to travel. Upon arriving in the Canaries, she was taken to the Gran Canaria Turtle Hospital for a check-up, before being released back into the water.

Drug dealer is nailed

GUARDIA Civil officers, patrolling the rural areas of Santa Cruz, arrested a 51-year-old local man, charging him with crimes against public health, and drug-trafficking.

The events unfolded when the police witnessed the man in plain sight, selling drugs to another person, inside a parked-up vehicle. He spotted the officers watching him, as did the person inside the vehicle, who sped away promptly, leaving

the dealer frozen. The officers approached him and asked for his ID. They also carried out a superficial search, discovering, in his possession, seven small bags of a white substance, ready for distribution. It was tested and proved to be the Class A drug cocaine. In addition, they also found €100 in cash, comprising small notes. Having witnessed the dealer in action, and finding the evidence on his person, the officers arrested and charged the man, who is awaiting presentation before a judge.

Mortgages registered in Spain drop 30% in 2019 THE number of mortgages registered in Spain so far this year has dropped by 30%, which is a dramatic nosedive against the 2018 figures. And it’s all down a new property law, introduced in the summer, which affected expats.

There was a 29.9% decrease in August against the same month in 2018, and the data, released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), reveals that it was also the worst month since 2015. In total 20,385 new mortgages on homes made it on to the Land Registry in 2019. Of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities, La Rioja experienced the most negative mortgage drop, with a 61.5% decrease. The regions with the next largest slumps were Extremadura (53.8%), Navarra (52.9%), Canary Islands (49.7%), Balearic Islands (42.5%), Madrid (37.6%) and Andalucia (34.4%). Article 20 of the Real Estate Credit Act was enacted by the Spanish Government

in June, and, according to the INE: “It could have affected data published in August.” The new law makes it more difficult for expats seeking mortgages if they are not in the eurozone, specifically, or if they derive their incomes in a currency other than the euro. This is because the borrower has the right to convert the mortgage into his/her own currency, under certain circumstances, at a later date.

Fallen tree kills woman

A WOMAN died and a young girl was seriously injured after being struck by a tree in Palma around midday last Sunday. The tragic event happened close to the Cathedral of Mallorca, when strong winds got the better of the palm tree.

The Brazilian woman was in the area with her husband and seven-year-old daughter when a gust of wind forced the top of the tree to fall, crushing the mother to death. Some branches also hit the youngster, who suffered a severe anxiety attack after seeing her mother lying on the floor. Both father and daughter were attended to by emergency personnel, while the youngster was taken to hospital. High winds have caused damage across Mallorca, and in Puerto Andratx, fire crews were on call from the early hours of Sunday to deal with many fallen trees. Rough seas also caused many boats to be cast adrift, and in Llucmajor, the Ma-6015 highway was closed. Information from AEMET recorded gusts of up to 110km/hr, with emergency services issuing a level-one risk alert.

Jetski Frenchman left critical

A 31-YEAR-OLD Frenchman is in a critical condition, following a jetski accident in Adeje last Tuesday. The emergency services received a call in the morning, reporting that a man had been seriously injured.

Staff of the company organising the activity rescued him from the water, applying first-aid while transporting him on a boat to Puerto Colón. He is believed to have suffered a head trauma, as well as symptoms of drowning, and was transferred to Candelaria Hospital in a critical condition.

A JET2 flight, about to head home to Leeds Bradford Airport from Tenerife, was forced to fly in a circle for two hours above the sea, amid fears of a “fault” with the plane. The ordeal was branded a “nightmare” by one passenger, who described tense scenes, including people sweating and children being sick. Flight LS224 was scheduled to arrive back at the Yeadon airport in the early hours of Monday. But it barely made it away from South Tenerife Airport before trouble hit.

The flight, scheduled to take off at 7.55pm on Sunday, was delayed at first, and one source, believed to be on the flight, said: “Flight delayed due to pressurisation problem with plane. Got on and took off to find problem was back.” It eventually set off at around 8.51pm, nearly an hour after it was supposed to, and the plane climbed to around 7,000 feet as the pilot manoeuvred the aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean. But after just 20 minutes of flight-time, the pilot was forced to circle near South Tenerife Airport, dropping his speed to fluctuate between 170 and 210 knots per hour. A spokesperson for Jet2 said: “Flight LS224 from Tenerife to

Leeds Bradford returned to Tenerife shortly after takeoff, when the pilot reported a minor fault indication. The plane circled in one spot for close to two hours.” One passenger described a small patch of panic on the aircraft, saying: “Everyone sweating, kids being sick… what a nightmare!” The pilot made one last circle at 10.26pm, before swinging out wide, further towards the ocean, and then descending. It landed back at South Tenerife Airport at about 10.48pm. A Jet2 spokesperson for Jet2 said: “Customers were provided hotel accommodation, and we will be flying them back to Leeds Bradford today.”

€1bn bid made for Air Europa THE owner of British Airways, IAG, has put in a €1bn bid for Latin America specialist Air Europa. And, should the deal go through, the Spain-based company will join a stable of airlines, including the UK flagcarrier, as well as Iberia, Level, Vueling and Aer Lingus. The company said the idea behind the deal was to create a hub in Madrid, which could match the likes of London Heathrow and Amsterdam Schiphol. “Acquiring Air Europa would add a new competitive, cost-

effective airline to IAG, consolidating Madrid as a leading European hub,” said IAG chief executive Willie Walsh. “It would result in IAG achieving South Atlantic leadership, and, therefore, generating additional, financial value for our shareholders.” He added: “IAG has a strong

track record of successful acquisitions, most recently with the acquisition of Aer Lingus in 2015, and we are convinced Air Europa presents a strong strategic, fit for the group.” Air Europa has a network of 69 destinations, the majority in Latin America.

REMEMBRANCE SERVICES 2019

A TENERIFE villa is among an £8.1m (€9.4m) property portfolio seized from a British family, following the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) civil recovery and tax investigation. This ended up with the villa and a Range Rover Evoque, together with 16 properties in and around Bath, Somerset, being confiscated. Four members of the same Davies family; Shane, 47, his wife Rhianna, 34, mother Sheila, 66, and sister Tracey, 48, agreed to surrender the assets, having conceded that they were acquired using the proceeds of unlawful conduct. The property portfolio was acquired between 1998 and 2007, and investigations revealed that between 2004 and 2009 alone, it generated rental and commercial income of more than £2m.

The portfolio included a seven-bedroom converted barn and mill in Norton St. Philip, which, on a holidaylettings website, boasted an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi and five bathrooms. Also recovered was an 18th Century Georgian townhouse in Bath, which was operated as the Roman City Guest House, and the former Midford telephone repeater station. In addition, the defendants agreed to repay £368,000 of rental income, accrued from property lettings. NCA investigators believe that the portfolio was acquired through mortgage fraud and the sale of controlled drugs. But the Davies family had claimed that the sizeable funds used to purchase the properties were the result of “gifts”. But this could not be substantiated. Andy Lewis, NCA Head of Asset Denial, said: “This investigation has identified unlawfully-held assets worth millions of pounds.

“The Canary Islands’ holiday home, and prestige vehicle, represent the obvious trappings of wealth. But equally important is the recovery of numerous commercial and residential properties, which would otherwise have continued to generate substantial revenue the defendants were not entitled to.” He added: “It is vital to the UK’s economic wellbeing that assets are held legitimately, and the NCA is determined to recover property, acquired through the proceeds of serious and organised crime.” The NCA’s investigation was supported by Avon & Somerset Police, whose Detective Sergeant Gareth Kitchener, said: “This is a fantastic result, which is testament to the tenacity of the NCA investigators, who took this case forward. “It demonstrates that civil recovery powers are an extremely powerful tool in the fight against organised crime.”

Bomb scare for film cast

ANGELINA Jolie and Richard Madden were evacuated from a film set after the discovery of an unexploded bomb. And the shocked cast and crew were hauled away as disposal experts were called in. Onlookers in Fuerteventura told how panic quickly spread during shooting of The Eternals, and everyone was ordered back to a safe distance. A set insider said: “It was obviously terrifying. The bomb could have been there for decades, untouched, but who knows what might have happened if it were disturbed. “Some of the biggest stars in the world were on set, and nobody was taking any chances. Fortunately, experts dealt with it.”

A MAN charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, after migrants were found dead inside a lorry in Essex, has been warned that his life is in “serious” danger. The sinister messages were received by Eamon Harrison and his family following the tragic discovery of dead Vietnamese men and women in the Waterglade Industrial Park, in Grays. Last Friday, British police began extradition proceedings to bring the 22-yearold from Mayobridge in Co Down, Northern Ireland, to the UK, after he appeared before Dublin High Court on a European Arrest Warrant. Mr Harrison is suspected of delivering the trailer, in which 39 migrants died, to the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. Gardai and the Police Service of Northern Ireland are investigating the threats, and have warned him, formally, that his life is in “serious danger”. Members of his family in Northern Ireland have also been informed that their lives are at risk, and a source told the Irish Mirror: “We are

regulating fauna, and working together with whaleand dolphin-watching organisations,” said the President. He added that tourists could be safe in the knowledge that their holidays were green, and that “they should know that Tenerife comprises 80% of protected areas”. Martin said that dealing with aviation issues and the failure of Thomas Cook had dominated business since the Cabildo came to office in July.

Earlier in the year, Ryanair announced the closure of their bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, and mainland Spain’s Girona. He said these factors had so far resulted in a small decrease in the number of British tourists visiting the islands. But, said the President: “Tenerife Government’s main aim at the World Travel Market was to agree contracts to increase, or maintain, the number of British tourists.”

A 58-YEAR-OLD man, caught masturbating in public, was arrested by National Police yesterday (Thursday) morning after being caught in the act.

He was playing with himself while observing two minors, aged four and 17, through a glass window, as they practised a sporting activity. The incident took place in the Pancho Camurria municipal sports centre, in Santa Cruz, and the school’s sport monitors noticed the pervert

because he was behaving suspiciously. The monitors went outside to check what was going on, and, as they drew closer to him, they realised that he was pressing himself against a window, while fiddling with himself. At the same time, he was studying the two boys inside the sports centre. The authorities were notified immediately, and, after interviewing the monitors, they arrested the man, charging him with exhibitionism. He is now is awaiting an appointment before a judge.

of the victims, whose journey ended in tragedy on our shores.” He added: “This evidence is being gathered across a number of jurisdictions worldwide. As a result, we cannot yet announce the identity of any of the victims.” Earlier, the Vietnam Government said members were “deeply saddened” to learn that the 39 migrants found dead in the back of

a lorry are all believed to be its citizens, describing it as a “serious humanitarian tragedy”. Lorry-driver Mo Robinson, 25, was arrested on the day the bodies were found. Robinson, of Craigavon, Northern Ireland, has already appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court, charged with 39 counts of manslaughter, conspiracy to traffic people, conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration and money-laundering. Three other people arrested in connection with the incident, two men, 38 and 46, along with woman, also 38, have been released on bail. Police believe they have identified the man responsible for the smuggling effort, and a special task-force is searching for millionaire Vietnamese gang lord “Mr Truong”, who is thought to be the regional head of a global ring in Nghe An. The investigation was prompted when 10 families from Nghen Town, Thien Loc, Vinh Loc and Thanh Loc contacted authorities to say they had lost contact with their loved ones.

talking about serious death threats. “This has been going on since the story broke, and it has now escalated since the first arrests were made. We are talking about a multi-millioneuro, people-smuggling ring, so officers are taking these threats very seriously. “Police are determined to smash this trafficking ring, and the crime bosses behind it are desperate to keep going what is a very lucrative industry for them.” Mr Harrison is being extradited in relation to a warrant list of 41 charges: 39 of manslaughter, conspiracy to commit human-trafficking, as well as conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration. Ronan Hughes, 40, and his 34-year-old brother Christopher, who are involved in road haulage and shipping and are from Armagh, have been urged to hand themselves in. Eight people were arrested in Vietnam on Monday, in connection with the case, reported Reuters, and postmortem examinations are being carried out on the 39

victims, all believed to be from Vietnam. Police have not yet identified any of the victims, publicly, but families have started receiving phone calls to give them the devastating news. Previously, Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable Tim Smith said: “We are in direct contact with a number of families in Vietnam and the UK, and we believe we have identified families for some

Cannabis farm man is a blazing menace

THE blaze at an illegal cannabis farm, installed in a Costa Blanca urbanisation, has led to the arrest of a 48-yearold Briton, responsible for seeking out ideal houses for cultivating marijuana in Altea, Crevillente and San Fulgencio. Firefighters dashed to Costa Blanca house in Altea in July, where a clandestine farm in the basement was wiped out, following an electrical fire. Police were able to gather information from the property registry and locate the criminal gang at a new cannabis farm in Crevillente, part of the Valencia community, where they seized 1,369 plants at the cannabis farm there. A swoop on the isolated property saw the arrest of two Montenegro men, one of whom tried to flee through

the roof. The discovery of another cannabis farm, in Alicante’s San Fulgencio area, eventually led police to the Briton, who travelled around, in search of these ideal locations to install clandestine plantations. During the months-long operation, police recovered 4.5kg of packaged marijuana buds, 1,369 marijuana plants, counterfeit documentation, mobile phones and a vehicle, as well as an entire clandestine electrical installation, comprising circuit-breakers, lamps, turbines, coolers, filters, condensers, air-conditioners and wiring. The plants, now in police possession, have a street value of around €400,000, while the value of electrical installations is estimated at €60,000. And the three men have been remanded in custody, without bail.

Mainland Spain on the alert for snow! IT’S hard to believe, but winter conditions are making themselves known in mainland Spain this week, with severe weather warnings in place across the country, including the threat of snow!

Ranging from orange (high risk) to yellow (medium risk), the alerts from weather agency AEMET have warned of strong

winds, heavy rainfall and snow. Yesterday (Thursday), A Coruna in Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Bizkaia in the Basque Country were all on orange alert for dangerous, coastal conditions. Meanwhile, Lugo, Asturias and Leon, all in the north, were all on yellow warning for snowfall. Avila and Segovia, which sit next to Madrid, are also on yellow warning for snow, while the capital is being alerted about strong winds. Alicante and Valencia are on yellow alert for rough

seas, and Mallorca and Menorca are on the same level warning, but for rainfall. Andalucia’s Granada and Almeria, meanwhile, are both on yellow alert for strong winds and dangerous coastal conditions. All the warnings are in place until at least the end of today (Friday). In fact, several more provinces will be placed on alert, with Huesca and Navarra added to the yellow-warning list for snow, and almost a dozen others in the north alerted for wind and rain.

WHAT is set to be one of Spain’s shortestever General Election campaigns has begun, officially, and, as usual, once the clock struck midnight on the last day of October, political parties were ready to go with their postersticking. They are not allowed by law to do so, until the campaign period begins, and, since the last election campaign at the end of 2011, genuine contenders for the leadership have been mounting up. The right-wing PP and current, reigning, leftleaning PSOE (socialists) had stopped competing against each other, by the 2015 vote, because centre-right Ciudadanos and left-wing independents Podemos, in coalition with United Left as Unidos Podemos, had burst on to the scene, the latter coming from nowhere to net five European Parliament seats in 2014. The far right, in the shape of Vox, which had been in the background for a long time but never achieved Parliamentary representation, appeared as a genuine source of competition in the April elections. Pedro Sánchez, the PSOE leader, had called the election to seek a mandate for governing after just 10 months in power, following a no-confidence vote against the reigning PP, because of widespread corruption charges against high-ranking members. Now, the five has grown to six, with Podemos breakaway group Más País! (‘More Country’), led by former member Íñigo Errejón, expected to win at least a handful of seats with his prosocial policies. These include a 32-hour working week instead of the current 40 hours, as well as a minimum

wage and State monthly pension of €1,200. The party’s leader, styling themselves as more moderate left than Podemos, but further left than the PSOE, was in Cádiz earlier this week for his first-ever political rally as a presidential candidate. Albert Rivera, of Ciudadanos, based his own discourse in Cádiz largely on the relatively non-existent threat of Catalunya severing ties with Spain, and going it alone. His party’s manifesto includes higher wages, lower taxes, an end to widespread job insecurity, greater help for families and for wouldbe or actual parents, and a drive to make housing more affordable, for renters and buyers. sought to drum up fear of a “national emergency”, and to convince his audience that the party was not “far right” but “representative of everyone in Spain”. Yet surveys earlier in the year showed that around 755 people in the country did not agree. Pablo Casado, the PP leader, claimed that Sánchez had made it into the presidential hot-seat through a noconfidence vote, based upon “lies”, despite court cases that had already found PP members guilty of the corruption which forced the vote. He also said that a vote for the PSOE would be a vote for Catalunya’s independence, on the grounds that the prosecession parties in the region

had backed Sánchez’s motion against the PP, and that Sánchez has always been set against allowing a legal referendum on independence in Catalunya. Casado and Sánchez were at separate rallies in Sevilla, while Abascal was in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona province). United Left leader Alberto Garzón was in Madrid, along with Irene Montero, deputy leader and spokeswoman for Podemos, and wife of its head, Pablo Iglesias. Pablo, rather than being at a rally, was on the humorous, chaotic chat show, El Hormiguero (The Ant’s Nest), hosted by comedian Pablo Motos. Iglesias referred to his failed attempts, and those of Sánchez, to reach a coalition deal after the April elections, which has led to their repeat, set for Sunday (10th Nov). He also referred to Errejón’s split from Podemos to form his own party. “When you separate, things are often much better,” said Iglesias of Errejón, showing that he has no hard feelings. “When you each have some space from each other, you have an easier relationship with each other. Our cardinal sin was to be too intense.” In fact, Iglesias had previously admitted that Errejón was the political brains behind Podemos much of the time, and was “gifted”, with “highIQ”, meaning that he was “inevitably frustrated” and would one day feel he had outgrown the party. As for Sánchez, Iglesias does

not seem to regard the PSOE as a direct rival, and he believes it is still possible that they could form a coalition. His wife Irene called for her audience at the Madrid rally to “persevere” in their Podemos votes, so that, “after four general elections in as many years, the changes the country needs can finally happen”, while warning the “old two-party system” that Podemos was “not giving up”. Sánchez urged his listeners in Sevilla to “vote usefully”, to turn to the PSOE if they were undecided or were leftleaning, to avoid fragmented results that would end in yet another hung Parliament, which could hinder a stable government from forming. But with the 2015 elections having to be repeated, through inconclusive results, most of the opposition agreeing only to the PP’s investiture to avoid a third vote, and April’s also having led to a hung Parliament, it appears that the end of the two-party system has also brought an end to any chance of the polls giving any one group an outright majority. As a result, whichever party gains the most seats will have to work with at least one or even two or three others, to form a government. But signs of Spaniards suffering “electoral fatigue” are already showing, however, and participation looks set to be at its lowest ever on Sunday!

Restaurant left with Almeria is bidding highly bitter taste of drugs to impress Travel Market

A SCHEME for moneylaundering, involving a luxury restaurant, has been swallowed up by police investigators in Andalucia, who arrested two men, said to be the ring leaders. In last week’s dramatic raid, police seized €650,000 in cash from popular Pure Estrecho, in Algeciras. The money, alleged to have been made from the sale of drugs in the Campo de Gibraltar, was found stashed in a pipe. The eatery, well-known in the area, is one of the most expensive in the city, and investigators had spent a

year digging into the moneylaundering network, which involved a drug-trafficker and the establishment’s owner. The trafficker, known only as J.M.A.C, had a history of drug-related crimes, creating two trading companies which “served” the restaurant, owned by a man known only as S.M.G. The pair are alleged to have used the companies to funnel huge sums of drug money into the business, to make it appear legitimate. In addition to the two arrests, authorities seized two luxury vehicles and 12 properties related to the network. One of the detainees was locked up without bail, while the other has been released ahead of their joint trial.

ALMERIA is going all-out to reinforce and expand its share of the British tourist market, which is why a delegation from the Provincial Tourist Service is in London this week to promote the region at the World Travel Market.

It is considered to be one of the most important traveltrade shows in Europe, which is why there is a Costa de Almeria stand of 550sq/m, within the Andalucia exhibition area. And, over a three-day period, Fernando Gimenez, the Diputacion de Almeria Tourism delegate, will have been meeting travel agents, airlines, marketing companies, travel media and tour operators, with a view to boosting British visitor numbers. As for the scheme, he said: “It is an ambitious promotion campaign, with which we want to intensify this market, and clear up any doubts generated by the Brexit

situation, or the Thomas Cook case.” The delegate added: “We come with the hope of offering confidence, and being convinced of the virtues of the Costa de Almeria destination, which continues to be one of Britain’s favourites.” Gimenez also revealed that the Diputacion had

designed a marketing plan for 2020, with the aim of gaining traveller-loyalty, and increasing the flow of British visitors to the province. The deputy said: “The World Travel Market is a must for the provincial delegation, and our presence here generates numerous, commercial opportunities.”

Double delight as police flatten two drug gangs Brutal €1.5m robber now captured, after two years

Packages of cocaine were found in a Madrid car park vehicle

POLICE have smashed two drug gangs, one of which planned to sell 101kg of cocaine in a Marbella shopping centre, and five arrests were made in total. Meanwhile, investigators seized 621kg of illegal drugs between Marbella and Madrid. Those held, who came from Brazil and Colombia, are accused of shipping coke from the

Spanish capital to the Costa del Sol. The Marbella mall was chosen by suspects as the transfer location, in their bid to “go unnoticed” by officers. But they were made aware of the operation and were able to make arrests. They also seized €11,000, 10 mobile phones and six cars. The Colombians are believed to have run the gangs, while the Brazilians acted as “brokers”. A police probe was launched

in February, after agents received information about the discovery of a 400kg drug haul in a warehouse on a Madrid industrial estate. Collaboration with Colombian and North American police then meant investigators could trace the origins of the drugs. In September, four of the gang were also caught redhanded in a Madrid car park with 120 packages of cocaine, including 30 concealed under the front seats of their car.

A FUGITIVE of the biggest, most brutal armed robbery, ever carried out in Gibraltar, was arrested while returning from Morocco, after two years on the run.

Two men are already in prison for their part in the June 2017 heist, in which they stole €1.5m at gunpoint, in June 2017. The third man, an unnamed, 29-year-old Englishman, spotted by the National Police getting off a ferry from Morocco, was cornered by the officers in Tarifa. It brought to an end the two years and more he had spent on the run, following the 25-minute, €1.5m raid on tobacco wholesalers Southease Ltd, at the New Harbours warehouse.

The men, armed with BB airguns, capable of killing a human, and their faces covered, assaulted a security guard and tied up workers. They then helped themselves to three bags, each holding €500,000, and fled. The Royal Gibraltar Police soon arrested the pair, who were close to the scene of the crime. Rachid Behdaoui, 53, and Samir Douaoui, 29, were connected to the holdup by DNA evidence, and put on trial. Behdaoui was imprisoned for eight years and five months, while his partner in crime, Douaoui, received three years and two months. Chief Justice Anthony Dudley, who was judging the case, called it “the highestvalue robbery ever carried out in Gibraltar”. But just one of the three bags, containing €500,000, has been found to date.

Retiring? Spain is the finest place in Europe SPAIN has beautiful surroundings, towns, cities, and, of course, lots of sunshine, which makes it a perfect setting for those approaching their final years And, says a new report, Spain is the best country to retire to in Europe. In fact, Blacktower Fi-

nancial Management has revealed the best and worst European countries for retirees, based on cost of living, crime rates, life expectancy, property prices, average population age and weather. The country scored highly for each of these sections, without topping another country outright, but its average paved the way, overall, for it to land the top spot.

Second in the rankings is Finland. The chilled Scandinavian atmosphere and gorgeous magic of the northern lights is also an excellent choice for retirees. Third was Italy, known for its wines, olive oils and pasta, which is a winning combination for when you’re past the point of no return, and have no problems with packing on some extra pounds. The UK

featured in 17th place, and, despite the perception of grey skies and constant rain, the rolling hills of the north are a joy to see, whatever the weather. And the south-west has a gorgeous coastline, and an opportunity to grab a surfboard and make for the waves, especially if reaching retirement, has given some people a new lease of life.

Fortnite star’s life ban - after cheating to win JARVIS Kaye, a professional Fortnite player for eSports team FaZe Clan, has received a permanent ban from playing the hugelypopular video game for cheating.

He revealed in an emotional YouTube video that he had been banned for uploading videos, which showed him using aimbots in the game to improve the accuracy of his shooting. He told his subscribers, totalling nearly two million, that he was unaware that the move would cause him so much trouble. “All I was thinking about while making those videos was just how entertaining and interesting they would be for you guys to watch,” he said. “It didn’t even cross my mind to think that I could be banned for life from Fortnite. I want to make it clear that this is the first time I have ever done anything like this, and, of course, I have never done this in a competitive game mode.” Aimbots are one of the most popular ways of cheating on Fortnite, because they allow players to shoot competitors without having to take careful aim. The use of aimbot software is forbidden under Fortnite’s

Some versions of the cheat have even been found to contain dangerous malware, which puts users at risk of having their private data stolen. Epic Games maintains a zero-tolerance policy on cheaters, and last year it acquired Finnish security firm Kamu in an attempt to crack down on players in breach of its rules. Kaye broke down in tears as he explained that he would never be able to play Fortnite or create Fortnite-related content for his YouTube and Twitch channels. He apologised to Fortnite developers Epic Games and pleaded with the company

to reconsider the ban. “I know how big of a mistake I’ve made and I’m truly sorry. Epic. I have to take accountability for my actions and I’m going to do my best to accept any punishment that comes my way. I’m not trying to find a quick road out, but I didn’t think I’d be banned forever.” Some of his fans supported him, via hashtag #FreeJarvis, in an attempt to get his account reinstated. But a spokesperson for Epic Games told The Independent newspaper: “We have a zero-tolerance policy for the usage of cheat software. “When people use aimbots, or other cheat technologies to gain an unfair advantage, they ruin games for people who are playing fairly.”

And dramatic images portrayed Local Police officers battling the blaze with three fire extinguishers, before fire-fighters arrived. The fire began on Avenida del Mediterraneo in Salobreña, last Monday at 1pm, and is

believed to have started in the vehicle’s engine. Both people in the car escaped unharmed, according to local paper Ideal. Several firefighters and police officers were involved in extinguishing the inferno, which left the car a burnt-out shell. Witness Johnny Handsome said: “The fire spread very quickly. The Local Police tried to put it out with fire extinguishers, but to no avail. And. by the time the Fire Brigade came, it was a burnt-out wreck.”

Brexit weighs heavily on bank’s huge profit

SANTANDER bank has added six million customers in the last 12 months, and already serves 144 million people, worldwide. But Brexit has made a huge 35% dent in the profits of Spanish bank.

It recorded a drop in its net profits during the first nine months of the year, after its British subsidiary’s profits fell 19%. Yet Spain’s largest bank recorded a net profit of €3,732m between January and September, while its British arm earned €828m. Difficulties in the UK were offset by a 19% increase in

profits in Brazil, where the bank earned €2,249m, and the bank’s Brazilian arm remains its most profitable subsidiary. The company’s American division witnessed the biggest leap in profits, seeing them rise to €619m, which was a 27% increase. Profits were also up significantly in Mexico, where there was a 14% rise to €659m, and in Portugal, where profits surged 12% to €385m. The company’s

Spanish wing remains its second-most-profitable division, with profits rising 3% to €1.185m. Ana Botin, the group’s president, said the company had maintained “good trends”, despite a difficult business environment. She added: “We have achieved the figures, thanks to the strength of our business model and our new regional organisation structure, announced in April.” Botin added that diversifying into both European and American markets had helped Santander distinguish itself from competitors. The bank has added six million customers in the last twelve months, and already serves 144 million people worldwide.

SIX examiners on Benidorm’s Local Police selection board are under investigation, after one candidate gave the game away by spotting other aspirants cheating on a written exam. The candidate made a denuncia in October last year, suggesting that examiners must have leaked the answers’ sheet, prior to the exam. All six on the selection board have been requested to

appear in Benidorm’s Court of Instruction No.4 in January 2020, with the original exam documents, facing potential crimes of cheating in the custody of documents. The invigilator present in the original exam has also been asked to appear as a witness. The “cheat” shock came after Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez removed the six examiners and declared the test results invalid, following the denuncia. The Local Police had 15 positions open within the force, but the selection process has been suspended for over a year, awaiting court proceedings.

UK general election uncertainty really weighs heavily on sterling

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. Over the last fortnight, the pound-to-euro exchange rate has been fluctuating between €1.15 and €1.16, because of uncertainty surrounding Brexit, and December’s UK general election. Meanwhile, the EUR/GBP exchange rate remained steady at around £0.86, while GBP/USD fluctuated between $1.28 and $1.30. Sterling experienced a lot of volatility last week, after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn announced that the Labour Party would back a general

BANKS are no longer allowed to charge an overdraft fee, in addition to nonpayment interest, following a landmark verdict by the Supreme Court, brought by a customer of a BasqueCountry-based, highstreet entity. Kutxabank, formerly known as the BBK, which operates all over Spain, has been scolded by the highest contentious court in the country for charging €30 each time a customer goes into unauthorised overdraft, or his or her monthly mortgage repayment is more than a week late. The verdict refers to the “Gyula Kis” case in the European Court of Justice (ECJ) on 3rd October this year, which states that the consumer must be able to check that there is no overlap between fees charged and services provided. Another ECJ hearing of 26th February, 2015, the “Matei case”, found that a clause involving a charge for late payment of a loan or mortgage to be “abusive”, since it constitutes a “sanction” for the “simple risk banks run, in providing

election, which provided the necessary support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s bid for a pre-Christmas poll, to make it through Parliament. UK markets remained cautious, however, as Brexit developments have been put on pause, for what is expected to be one of the most divisive general elections in a generation. However, the euro has also been under pressure, with Germany’s flash Markit Manufacturing PMI coming

in below forecasts at 41.9, and further fuelling fears that the Eurozone’s powerhouse economy could be facing a recession, in the near term. The euro was also feeling added pressure, as the Eurozone’s economic woes intensified, last week, with several sub-par data releases adding to concerns that the region is experiencing a prolonged slowdown. The US dollar weakened, in response to the Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate

announcement. While a rate cut had been long expected, the central bank was more dovish than forecast. Tuesday will see the release of the UK’s Markit Services PMI for October, which is expected to remain mired in contraction territory at 49.7. However, any surprise improvement could buoy sterling, because growth in the UK’s largest sector would provide some confidence in the economic outlook. llMeanwhile, US-dollar

Banks can’t charge for overdrafts, or late-payment costs

credit”, despite “sanctions” already being provided, in terms of “legal and contractual consequences”. In other words, defaulting on a loan or mortgage eventually allows a lender to take legal action to reclaim the debt, such as seizing secured assets, after a set period of time, or a percentage of the credit unpaid, in the case of mortgages. But no action can be taken until either the unpaid monthly instalments total at least 20% of the overall debt,

or a full year’s worth of quotas have been missed; whichever comes first, according to an EU directive that Spain recently incorporated into national law. And the risk the bank takes in lending money to consumers is one the entity itself is required to bear, protected by these legal measures. But by charging a penalty fee for late payment in addition, means removing some or all of this risk, going against the fundamental nature of

this business venture. Also, interest at current rates is automatically charged for an unauthorised overdraft after a set period of days, or for late payment of a loan or mortgage instalment, as standard practice, and the Supreme Court considers that a penalty fee on top is a “double punishment”. The Court says the €30 penalty also flouts the law that a bank cannot charge for services it does not provide. According to the Association of Financial Services Consumers, ASUFIN, any fee charged by a bank is automatically considered a “commission”, and, as no expense is incurred by the entity, and nor is any work carried out which would justify a commission being charged, there are, by default, no grounds for levying any type of penalty on a customer for nonpayment. ASUFIN points out that customers have a choice of which banks to use, and

investors will be looking ahead to Wednesday’s release of the preliminary nonfarm productivity figure for the third quarter, which is expected to come in at 0.9%. This week will also see the Bank of England (BoE) announce its latest interestrate decision. No change in interest rates is forecast, but any dovish commentary from Governor Mark Carney could apply downward pressure on the GBP/EUR exchange rate. British political developments will also remain in focus, with the pound potentially climbing, if the Conservatives remain ahead in the polls. And, it says, it is not up to the recipient of this “favour to punish the favour provider”. The Association has expressed its satisfaction with the Supreme Court verdict, saying “it supposes another step forward towards achieving a fairer and more transparent banking and financial sector”. Patricia Suárez, the ASUFIN chairwoman, said: “Banks and financial service providers need to behave responsibly, ditch this abusive practice and not force their valuable customers to have to go through the courts, to reclaim a commission they should not be charging in the first place.” The Supreme Court has ruled that a charge for being overdrawn, or for missing a monthly mortgage payment, “does not comply with the Bank of Spain’s requirements”, which is that, other than interest for the delay, no other fee can be charged, unless a specific service is provided to justify it. As yet, it is not clear whether the Supreme Court verdict applies retroactively, and for how long this would affect past payments. But it appears likely that it will be effective only from the date of the judges’ collective decision.

Gary Lineker: My Grandad’s War

Presenter and former England football captain Gary Lineker follows in the footsteps of his grandad, Stanley Abbs, to explore a brutal but often overlooked chapter of World War Two. The Italian campaign played a key part in the Allies’ victory in WW2 but whilst Gary is aware that his grandad served in Italy as a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps, he knows little more as his grandfather never talked to him about that time. To discover the true story behind his grandad’s war experiences and better understand the importance of this campaign, Gary travels to Italy. Using Stanley’s unit’s War Diary as a guide, he follows the Italian campaign from the first landings at Salerno which nearly ended in disaster, to the seemingly endless months of gruelling fighting over mountains and through torrential rivers. Along his journey Gary meets veterans from the Italian campaign, including 104 year-old William Earl who, like Gary’s grandad, was in the Royal Army Medical Corps. William shares his vivid memories of battling to save soldiers under fire. The programme also features poignant first-hand testimony from other veterans, bringing to life the unremitting reality of the combat in Italy. As Gary learns just how relentless and grim the battle was, he comes to understand why his grandfather never shared what must have been harrowing memories. Despite their heroic fighting, the Italian veterans later became known as ‘D-Day dodgers’ and Gary wants to know why. He learns that the soldiers self-deprecatingly embraced the label, penning a song that made fun of the term. He discovers how their story was overshadowed by the D-Day landings, which happened the day after the Allies in Italy took Nazi occupied Rome. As he finds out about the huge sacrifices the Italian veterans made and how much they endured, Gary is determined to make sure they receive the recognition they deserve, and that their huge contribution is never forgotten.

with Jools Holland & Jamie Cullum Alongside Jools at the wheel of this Friday’s hour-long show is his co-host, the musician, songwriter, broadcaster and jazz aficionado Jamie Cullum. The duo will be talking about all things jazz, and hosting music from Kano, Nérija, Joy Crookes and Metronomy in a studio which is packed to the rafters with over 70 musicians this week! With a jazz vein running through the show, they reflect on the contemporary British scene with a short film and a chat to the son and the nephew of jazz legend Miles Davis about his lost album Rubberband, and the forthcoming BBC Two documentary, Miles Davis: Birth Of Cool. Plus Jamie will delve into the Later… archive to pick his favourite performance from the show’s history, and selects Ben Folds Five, and talks about how it hugely inspired him when he saw it originally. And he’ll be sharing some of his current favourite new artists and performing a track from his recent album, Taller, joined by a string section and 20 members of the Roundhouse Choir. Opening the fourth show of the series is electro-pop band, Metronomy. Grime pioneer and Top Boy star Kano will be performing tracks including the powerful Teardrops. Bringing jazz vibes are jazz collective Nérija, a who’s who of the most prolific players of the growing contemporary British jazz scene, and rising South London star Jay Crookes makes her Later… debut performing new single Early, joined by star of the burgeoning Dublin hip-hop scene Jafaris.

Britain’s Biggest Warship BBC2, 20.00

After three months at sea, the test pilots from the Royal Navy and RAF have successfully landed the F35 jets on the flight deck of HMS Queen Elizabeth for the first time, and even tested launching and landing in hurricane conditions. But with just a few weeks to go before the warship arrives in New York in spectacular style, they are about to try a method of landing never attempted before, which carries great risks but could revolutionise carrier operations globally. Narrated by Caroline Catz.

Julia Day (Julia Ormond) wakes up on her 60th birthday alone. The first she’s spent by herself in the 35 years she was married to Ted (Alex Jennings), before he left her. Determined to have a good day, Julia leaves her Devon home and heads to London to celebrate with her children - but one by one they let her down. Leo (Archie Renaux), her youngest, simply because he forgets. Della (Jemima Rooper), her only daughter, marooned abroad and guilt-stricken, and her firstborn Patrick (Sebastian Armesto) who is struggling to maintain a hectic work and home life - all whilst fighting an attraction to a colleague. Feeling adrift, Julia’s at a low ebb when she happens upon a young man in a museum, Benjamin (Ben Barnes). The pair get talking and before she’s quite sure what’s happening they’re beginning a whirlwind romance. All that’s left to do - introduce him to her children. But they are suspicious of this younger man’s motives, and soon start plotting how to remove him.

DIY SOS: Children in Need Special BBC1, 20.00 CW watch The DIY SOS team descend on Blackburn as they embark on a huge challenge in aid of BBC Children in Need - transforming a rundown church hall into accommodation and a support centre for Nightsafe, a charity which receives funding from BBC Children in Need and provides support to young people who are homeless or vulnerably housed. This special programme shares a collection of stories from people who have been supported by Nightsafe during their lives, as well as those who work for the charity. The programme follows the trials and tribulations of the team and hundreds of volunteers and tradespeople as they work against the clock to create a new accommodation centre for Nightsafe to use.

Gimme Gimme Gimme sa THE legend of ABBA lives on with an incredible legacy of timeless tunes, and their undeniable place in music history.

The Swedish supergroup is as popular and well-loved today as it was in its Seventies heyday, with classic pop songs and dancefloor beats, familiar with generation after generation. Never in the history of pop has one group been so celebrated and revered! Triple-Award-winning ABBA Tribute Band REVIVAL™ have, yet again, been voted as the UK’s Official No.1 ABBA tribute act by the Agent’s Association of Great Britain. Revival’s renowned stage show has proved a hit, time and time again, in the UK and the world over, wowing audiences from Europe to

the Middle East. Since the summer of 2006, Lisa (Anni Frid), John (Benny), Nina (Agnetha) and Marcus (Björn) have been pushing

Revival™ to be the best it can be. As Lisa puts it: “It’s not just a case of singing the songs. We have to become ABBA.

Every line of every song, and every nuance of each verse and chorus is ingrained in the audience subconscious, and we don’t have any margin for error. “I think that makes us nervous, and puts us all on our toes before a show. It’s a good way to summon up the energy, to deliver a great performance.” Nina, otherwise known as Agnetha on stage, is a true, self-proclaimed ABBA fan. For her, performing in this tribute band is literally a dream come true. “I have been listening to ABBA for as long as I can remember, and used to act out dance routines and songs with my friends. “And the great thing is, the band are all passionate about ABBA music, too, and we love performing. I think that comes across, and the audience gets a real buzz from it. We love what we

Today, this amazing tribute band comes together to play all the ultimate sounds, including the hits Jive Talking, Saturday Night Fever, Islands In The Stream, and many more. Homes & Away, the Tenerife property people So what is Homes & Away anyway? ...don’t worry, we’ll keep it brief! WE are a well-established, independent property agency, with over 30 years’ experience in the UK and Tenerife property markets. Based in the South of Tenerife, in Golf del Sur, we are a local company, with our own roots in the local community. We specialise in golf properties, predominantly in Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf and Costa Adeje, and have an extensive portfolio. It includes all types of residential and holiday properties, from the smallest studio apartment, through to the largest of villas and bungalows. We also have a number of properties in the surrounding areas, including rural locations. Why not pop in for coffee and a chat? We’d love to meet you. We are here to help you Buying a Tenerife property can be a daunting task. We don’t have pushy, commissionhungry sales people, and ours is a more-friendly

approach. We treat you as an individual person, and show you properties that fit your requirements, not properties we’d like to sell. To do this, we begin by listening! At Homes & Away, we will assist you with every step of the process, in the search to find your ideal property. We will guide you throughout, from

making an offer, right through to moving in, decoration and furnishings, and getting your water and electricity turned on. We can even arrange property-inspection visits for three, four or seven nights, as required, at special rates. Time to meet the team (they’re mostly human!) Tanya is the boss lady, and

she’s been in the business hundreds of years! Before residing in Tenerife, she lived high in the hills of Tibet, where she was a very-successful alpaca farmer. Unfortunately, she was so successful, the alpacas formed their own society, held elections, and voted to deport Tanya to the island of Tenerife. On arrival, T a n y a discovered it wasn’t suitable here for animal breeding, because of the terrain, so she settled on real-estate marketing, instead. She’s doing OK now, but misses the alpacas terribly, even after all this time. Denise is an Edinburgh lassie, now living the dream in Tenerife. Having previously worked for

NASA, now she enjoys mingling with the stars. She likes to name-drop, and has the Shakira triplets on her friends list. (You know.... Shakira, Shakira, Shakira... like the song.) Unfortunately, she doesn’t often hang out with them, because she finds it difficult to tell them apart, which makes any conversations a tad awkward. Elsa is our French belle. Another smart cookie, she speaks at least 27 languages. We’re positive that clients call the office just to hear her accent. She previously worked with James Bond.

Trekking trio raise a huge sum for charity ON Saturday 28th October, Live PAWS had a visit from two of their volunteers, Hayley Butler and Sarah Wagstaff, who, after a two-day day hike up Mount Tiede, along with Sarah’s partner, Adam Walsh, had raised an astonishing €4,257 for the charity. It was only last month that Hayley was the recipient of the Best Female Singer award at the TEAs, so she has a lot to be proud of, at the moment! The cable car took them to the bottom of Mount Teide, where, along with 11 others, they started their journey to the summit. The first day involved five hours of walking. After an overnight stop at the mountain refuge, the group woke at 4am to resume their climb. With head torches strapped on, they set off at 4.30am, for another two hours of uphill efforts! The last 30 minutes to the top were tough; a steep incline, a temperature of -4°, and a strong wind. But what a view they got at the top! Watching the colours roll up over the horizon was stunning! After

sunrise came the long, sevenhour descent to their car. Siobhan, from the charity,

was full of praise for the group, saying:“Congratulations to Hayley, Sarah and Adam. We know it was tough, but you did it! “They are not natural walkers or trekkers, but they worked hard to reach their goal, and have raised way more than they ever expected. “Thank you to everyone for your support for the Tiede Team, not only during their training and hike, but also for your generosity in contributing to the fantastic sum raised for the animals in need.”

It is taking place on Saturday 14th December in St Eugene’s in San Eugenio. The cost for tickets is €20, which includes dinner and an amazing cabaret show. There are a couple of dinner choices, as well as a vegetarian option. Drinks include €8 for a bottle

of wine, €1 for water or refreshments, and €1.50 for a jug of beer, until 11.30pm. We are inviting everyone to meet at the bar at 7pm, and the meal will be served at 8pm. The Cabaret includes Frankie Mack Rat Pack Show and Gary Nelson. Tickets can sell out quite quickly for this event, so make sure you get your tickets early, to avoid disappointment. We do have various locations where you can buy the tickets, which are shown on the poster. We have a Facebook page, should you wish to make contact this way.

Our Christmas party is always a lot of fun, so don’t miss out this year, and get your tickets today. We are asking people to bring along some treats for our furry friends - our cats and dogs. We always get so many wonderful donations throughout the year for them, so we want to continue this wonderful tradition, and make our fur-babies’ Christmas special for them. They don’t yet have their forever families to share this happy occasion with, so we do our very best to make sure they are spoilt. We are open all year round, including Christmas Day, because our dogs and cats need to be walked, cleaned, fed and looked after, every single day. If you are looking for a lovely way to spend your Christmas morning, please do call up and see us, and maybe walk a dog or two. You can visit any day between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! We have had many adoptions over the last few months, but for every dog that leaves, one or two are found, surrendered or abandoned. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support every year, and would like to wish you all a very successful, fur-babyfilled 2020. If you interested in donating, or holding your own fundraiser for K9, please contact us on 667 638 468.

to see what little kitties are in residence! Please send us a private Facebook message, or ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006, if you would like to enquire about any of the cats and kittens which are available for adoption. We ask for a minimum donation of €20 per kitten, to cover costs. *All kittens go for a week’s trial, in your home * Marathon effort! One of our volunteers, Mr. Johnson, has very kindly offered to raise money for Cats Welfare by running a marathon this Sunday. Please support this great cause, and wish him all the best! https://www.gofundme. com/f/marathon-run-for-catwelfare-tenerife Kitten cages We are appealing to you all to make a small donation so that we can purchase some cages for our young kittens. Foster carers have been struggling, either fishing kittens out from under the bed, or with tiny cages (some designed for hamsters). The kittens, when very young, need to be contained, both for their own safety and easy accessibility. It also makes taming shy kittens that much easier. As the kittens get older, and

more adventurous, they are let out several times a day to explore their surroundings. If you are able to make a donation, no matter how small, it would be much appreciated. One cage is only €43, so, hopefully, we can purchase several. You can send money via PayPal at info@cats-welfaretenerife.com or call in at the shop. In both instances, please mark the money you give: “Cage Donation”. Thank you. Clothes required We need good quality ladies’ and men’s clothes. Please have a look around at home, and drop them into the shop on San Blas. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10am-6pm. We stock good-quality clothes of all sizes, at sensible, low prices. Pop along and take a look. Our customers come from all over the island, and we see many holidaymakers return, time and again, eager to snap up a bargain. If you don’t have transport, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

THE oils of avocados and olives are promoted for their health benefits. Both contain heart-healthy fats, and have been shown to reduce inflammation and protect against heart disease. Avocado oil Avocado oil is pressed from the fruit of the avocado tree (Persea americana), which contains approximately 60% oil. Although native to Central America, avocados are now produced in many places around the world, including New Zealand, the United States and South Africa. You can purchase either refined or unrefined avocado oil. The unrefined version is cold-pressed, preserving its natural colour and flavour. Refined avocado oil is extracted using heat, and sometimes chemical solvents. Typically, the refined oil is bleached and deodorised, resulting in a less-flavourful product. Avocado oil is versatile, and has both culinary and skin-

care uses Olive oil Olive oil is made from pressed olives. Many varieties are available, including pure, extra virgin, or virgin. Virgin and extra virgin are extracted through cold-pressing. Olive oil labelled “olive oil” or “pure” contains a mixture of cold-pressed oil, and refined oil that has been extracted via chemicals or heat.

Chill Out bar and restaurant Chill Out bar and restaurant offers a wide range of dishes, including Chateaubriand and Dorada al Sol. Why not come and dine, whilst watching the sun setting over Las Vistas beach, truly a beautiful setting to enjoy a lovely meal.

It’s easy to incorporate olive oil into your diet, as it’s often used as a cooking and dipping oil. Like avocado oil, olive oil has long been touted for its potential health benefits, including a lowered risk of certain types of cancer, and improved cholesterol and blood-sugar levels. Comparisons Avocado oil and olive oil provide the same number

of calories per serving. Their fatty-acid profiles are similar. Both contain equal amounts of saturated fat, and while avocado oil is slightly higher in polyunsaturated fat, the difference is insignificant. Both avocado oil and olive oil are primarily made up of oleic acid, a beneficial monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid. Foods rich in oleic acid may benefit your health. Particularly, they may help reduce inflammation and blood pressure levels. Both olive oil and avocado oil offer numerous health benefits. Antioxidant content Antioxidants are substances that reduce oxidative stress by combating free radicals in your body. Both avocado oil and olive oil contain these powerful compounds, particularly Vitamin E. Additionally, avocado oil and olive oil are particularly rich in lutein, an antioxidant that especially benefits skin and eye health. Studies have shown that the high concentration of this antioxidant in avocado and olive oil may help protect your skin from harmful UV rays

and visible light. Skin health Avocado oil and olive oil benefit your skin, largely due to their fatty acid profile, and Vitamin E and lutein contents. Applying avocado oil can help soothe dry, chapped, or damaged skin. Additionally, it may aid the treatment of psoriasis. Applying a topical cream containing avocado oil and Vitamin B12 improved symptoms of psoriasis. Avocado oil can aid wound healing, by increasing collagen production and decreasing inflammation. Similarly, olive oil has long been used in cosmetic and skin-care products. Numerous studies have noted olive oil’s beneficial effects on skin health, including preventing infections and helping heal burns, cuts and pressure wounds. Smoke point The smoke point of an oil is the temperature at which it starts to degrade and release harmful free radicals. Avocado oil has a higher smoke point than olive oil. It may be better to use avocado oil for cooking techniques that require high temperatures, such as sautéing, grilling, searing, and baking.

Having a smoke could be lowering your mood

SMOKING cigarettes could increase the risk of mental-health problems such as depression and schizophrenia, research suggests.

It has long been known that smoking is more common among people with mentalhealth conditions. However, it has been unclear as to whether smoking could be a factor in causing such problems, or is simply a form of self-medication among those already living with poor mental health. “What we found was that there was evidence of causal effects in both directions,” said Dr Robyn Wootton, the first author of the research, from the University of Bristol. Wootton said that while the serious physical consequences of smoking were already known, the new research underlined the importance of preventing

people from starting the habit, and helping smokers to quit to protect their mental health, whether or not they have existing mental-health problems. “Of course, if smoking is also making the risk of mental illness worse, then we should be helping individuals who have existing mental health problems to stop as well,” she said. Wootton and her colleagues reported how they compared the risk of developing depression or schizophrenia among people with, and without, a genetic predisposition to smoking cigarettes. As such

genetic variants are randomly distributed across the population, and are not changed by factors such as alcohol consumption, income, exercise or other health issues, the approach is a type of natural experiment that reduces the chances of any link being down to other factors. The team focused on 378 genetic variants that have previously been linked to whether people start smoking, as well as 126 genetic variants the team found were linked to a higher score for lifetime smoking, a measure encompassing how heavily people smoked, for

how long, and if they quit. Wootton and colleagues then used two separate genetic databases, one including thousands of individuals with schizophrenia, and the other including thousands of individuals with major depression, to explore whether the risk of having such conditions was linked to the genetic variants for smoking. The results reveal that both starting smoking and higher levels of smoking are linked to a greater risk of both depression and schizophrenia. As an example, an individual who smoked 20 cigarettes a day for 15 years, but then did not smoke for 17 years, had more than twice the odds of developing schizophrenia, and almost twice the odds of developing depression, than someone who had never smoked. The team also looked to see whether people with a genetic predisposition to depression or schizophrenia smoked more. While they did indeed find such an effect,

it was weaker than for the opposite direction. Wootton said it was necessary to explore exactly how smoking might increase the risk of schizophrenia and depression, but one possibility was that nicotine influences pathways in the brain linked to mental health problems. That could be important, she added, since nicotine is also found in electronic cigarettes. Cannabis use might also help to explain the findings, since high-strength cannabis has previously been suggested to increase the risk of mental-health problems, and those who smoke have a greater risk of cannabis dependency. Dr Ian Hamilton, an expert in addiction and mental health from the University of York, said: “While the physical harms of smoking are well known, this research points to the mental health risks of using tobacco. This risk should be communicated widely, but particularly to schoolage children, who might be tempted to try smoking.”

World’s greatest scientists club together, in an effort to solve ‘human suffering’

THOUSANDS of the world’s greatest scientists have joined together to declare that “untold human suffering” is unavoidable, without deep and lasting shifts in human activities. An alliance of more than 11,000 scientists signed a paper, which announced the climate emergency, before providing a set of effective actions that could be taken by humans. To limit the damage caused by people’s greenhousegas emissions, the paper calls for more control over the massively-booming global population, currently increasing by over 200,000 people a day. It adds that population control would have to be approached, with methods that ensured social and economic justice, to sustain a morally and ecologically sound world.

The global group is led by William J. Ripple (pictured), Ecology Professor at Oregon State University, along with researcher Christopher Wolf. Prof Ripple said: “Despite 40 years of major global negotiations, we have continued to conduct business as usual, and have failed to address this crisis. But climate change has arrived, and it is accelerating faster than many scientists expected.” The paper pointed to six areas in which humanity should take immediate steps to slow down the effects of a warming planet. Firstly, reducing the consumption of energy, and replacing fossil fuels with low-carbon renewables, leaving remaining stocks of fossil fuels in the ground. They detail how this can be encouraged, by eliminating subsidies to fossil fuel companies and imposing carbon fees, high enough to restrain the use of fossil fuels. Secondly, the paper called for the “shortlived pollutants” such as methane, soot and hydrofluorocarbons to be cut drastically, calculating that the reduction could see the short-term warming trend cut 50% over the next few decades. The paper also suggests ecosystems, such as forests, grasslands and mangroves, are protected in order for them to reach “ecological potential”, and act as carbon dioxide converters: a prevalent greenhouse

gas, created by human activity. Humans are encouraged to adopt a diet with fewer animal products by the researchers. This dietary shift would, significantly, reduce emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases, and free up agricultural lands for growing human food, rather than livestock feed. Reducing food waste is also stated as critical. The scientists say that at least onethird of all food produced ends up as garbage, which means that unnecessary emissions were created in producing it. And they are also calling for a “carbonfree” economy, shifting goals away from the growth of gross domestic product, and the pursuit of extreme wealth. Instead, people should realise their “dependence on the biosphere” and put that first, curbing the exploitation of ecosystems, says the paper. The paper also states that the growing rate of human population needs to slow down, to sustain an ecologically-sound world. The scientists add that population control would have to be approached, with methods that ensured social and economic justice. Graphs of vital signs in the paper illustrate several key climate-change indicators and factors over the last 40 years, since scientists from 50 nations met in Geneva at the First World Climate Conference, in 1979. In recent decades, multiple other global assemblies have agreed that urgent action is essential, but greenhouse-gas emissions are still rapidly rising. Other ominous signs from human activities include sustained increases in per-capita meat production, global tree-cover loss and number of airline passengers.

Hamilton hunger will put him past slick Schumacher

WHO’D have thought any driver would come close to Michael Schumacher’s record of seven Formula 1 world championships?

Step up Lewis Hamilton, who completed his sixth title at the US Grand Prix, but a study of his career statistics reveals in some areas that he has already surpassed the sport’s truly greats. He is only one behind Schumacher’s title tally, and hasn’t yet matched his total race wins. But check out his win ratio and pole positions’ record, which is regarded as the purest test of a driver’s speed. You’ll see that he is already an F1 leading light, and now the second-most-successful Grand Prix driver of all.

This sixth win means Hamilton has overtaken Argentine legend Juan Manuel Fangio on the all-time leader board, the latter winning five titles in the 1950s. This was a third consecutive crown for Hamilton (2017, 2018, 2019), but the record of consecutive F1 titles belongs to Schumacher, who swept all before him in securing five title wins on the bounce, between 2000 and 2004. It is also Hamilton’s fifth title in six years, his dominance

BRITISH Olympic sprinter James Ellington has launched legal action against former team-mate Nigel Levine, who was driving a motorbike in South Tenerife, which collided with an oncoming car with them both onboard, leaving his passenger with lifethreatening injuries. Ellington, who was a key member of the British 4x100m relay team, suffered multiple broken bones in his legs, fractures to his eye socket, pelvis and ankle, and lost six pints of blood when the bike driven by Levine had the collision in January 2017. The pair were attending a British Athletics warm-weather training camp in Las Americas. Having had multiple operations, Ellington, 34, confounded expert opinion by returning to competitive action in a one-off race this summer, and he remains hopeful of making the Olympic team next year. But no longer funded by British Athletics, and without any sponsorship deals, he announced last Friday that he had issued a personal-injury legal case against Levine and the driver of the other car, in a bid to recover funds to help with his comeback. “It’s been almost three years now since the crash, and the road to recovery is proving to be long and painful,” he said. “However, my intentions are clear: I want to return to the world of professional sprinting, and I’ll do whatever I can to make that happen.” Ellington’s injuries included a compound fracture of the right leg, a fractured left ankle, a fractured eye socket, a fractured pelvis and the loss of six pints of blood. Ellington was in the form of his life before the accident, finishing second over 100m at the British Championships, and running a personal best 10.04secs in his last track season in 2016. There were fears for his life in the immediate aftermath of the accident. But he has kept his intention to return to international sprinting, and he now has a carbon-fibre rod in his leg, along with multiple screws in his pelvis. His comeback at the London Anniversary Games this July was the first time he had completed 100m in training or in a race since the accident, and he was in noticeable pain as he finished in 10.93sec. Levine, an Olympic 400m relay runner, has also not raced since the accident. Having been hospitalised

being interrupted by then Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who pipped him to the championship by five points in 2016. The only other driver still racing, who has won more than a single championship, is Sebastian Vettel, on four. As for individual races, Hamilton has won 83, and only Schumacher has won more, with 91. But they stand head and shoulders above the rest. Vettel lies third with 53 wins, but the German has won just one race in the current campaign. Also, Hamilton’s 83 successes have come at a better win rate than Schumacher’s. In each of the last six campaigns, Hamilton has won 10 GPs on average. And, should he continue that trend next year, he will overtake Schumacher as the driver with the most race victories… and in fewer events!

Hamilton has won one in every three races, a 33.5% success rate: 83 wins from 248 GPs started. Of all drivers who have taken part in at least 50 Grands Prix, only Fangio (with almost one in two for 47%) and Jim Clark (35%) have a better win-rate than Hamilton. But Hamilton has been involved in at least three times as many races as both Clark and Fangio, sustaining his win rate over a much longer period. Hamilton has a marginallybetter win percentage than Schumacher, whose 91 victories came in 306 races for a 30% tally. Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna both won one in four of the GPs in which they competed. Frenchman Prost recorded 51 wins from 199 races, while Brazilian legend Ayrton Senna secured 41 wins from 161 Grands Prix before tragedy

struck in Imola, in 1994. Last Sunday, Hamilton was aware that he could finish as low as eighth to claim the title, but he fought tooth and nail, relentlessly, on well-worn tyres, to finish second. As he said with a grin, afterwards: “My dad told me, when I was six or seven years old, never to give up. That’s the family motto.” The alarm for his rivals is that Hamilton shows no sign of relenting. While most drivers, two months shy of their 35th birthday, might talk of retirement, he will line up again next year with the finest car, expressing every intention of carrying on beyond F1’s rules revolution in 2021. “As an athlete, I feel as fresh as can be,” he said. “It’s an honour to be up there with the greats, and I’ll keep pushing.” Who would argue with him?

Olympic sprinter sues pal, after bike collision for weeks, he returned to training later in 2017 and failed a drugs test for the asthma drug clenbuterol. He claimed it was down to two contaminated supplements he had been taking, but was unable to prove the assertion and was banned from all sport for four years. The 30-year-old cannot return to competition until 13th December, 2021. Ellington’s lawyer, Demetrius Danas, of Irwin Mitchell, said: “We have tried to settle the case

amicably with those involved in the crash. But we have now been left with no choice but to begin legal action in court, against all vehicles involved in the accident. “James is now running again and has big ambitions for the future, but he is still in the process of recovering from life-threatening injuries. “As his funding has come to an end, he is unable to access the rehabilitation and support which he needs to sprint again at a world-class level.”

Lynn takes early honours on a superb Finals Night IT was the League’s Finals’ Night at Nautas, and a party atmosphere was the order of the day. I’m starting with the Ladies trebles, because it will be easier for me, as I know more about what happened with that match than any of the others. That’s because I chalked it… heroic, I know. And it was sponsored by Boom Trikes Tenerife. We had Gio, Anne & Karen (Pas O Nadas) v Jackie F, Jackie H (Emerald B) & Lynn (Pink Elephant). The Pas O Nadas ladies lost the first two legs, but the games were close and they hit back to level at 2-2. Please bear in mind that I was chalking this, and how much I wanted a 3-0 to either team, because it was so hot in there. Back to the match, and the final leg had Jackie throwing for tops. But she hit a 20 then a double 15, busting the score, so P.O.N. stepped up for their finish, but just missed, and Lynn had the glory of double 20 with her first dart. The Ladies’ doubles were sponsored by Scooters & Chevys Bar, in Silencio, and, again, the two Jackies were there for Emerald B, who faced Shar & Mo (Ourplace playgirls). I can’t tell you much about this as I was still recovering from chalking the trebles. But the Emerald team won 3-2, and Jackie F hit a couple of the doubles, for which she deserves special credit. She did well by winning two finals, despite carrying an injury. But then, she doesn’t kick her darts, so a bad foot, maybe, isn’t that bad! The Ladies’ singles were sponsored by Jet Excursions, but the match schedule was changed, and it was the last match played. I understand the switch was made through personal reasons, and it would have been unreasonable to refuse. The Mad Hatters were represented by Janice (The Pocket Rocket), while the Playgirls had Shar back in action. And I was still in the recovery position, after chalking the trebles (that is, sitting out in the fresh air with a beer). I heard some good scores called, and was told it was a cracking match, which ended 3-2 to The Pocket Rocket. A special mention for both players: Shar made two finals and Janice secured the first finals’ win for The Mad Hatters. As expressed in John McWhirter’s quote: “Well done all the winners and finalists last night. So pleased for The Pocket Rocket. It was the fifth final in our three years as a team, and it´s our first win. Hopefully, there’s more to come.” The Division 2 trebles were sponsored by Boom Trikes Tenerife, and monopolised, mainly, by Emerald Lounge players. We had Daz, Matt and Legs (Emerald Lounge) v Carl & Andy (Emerald

Lounge) with P.O.N. (Pas O Nadas). This one also finished 3-2 to the Emerald Lounge, but it was the twothirds team of Carl, Andy & Pod who prevailed. The Division 2 doubles, sponsored by Scooters & Chevys Bar, saw Pink Elephant back in action, with Alan & Per facing the Club Activo pairing of Rob & Sergio. As newcomers, the Pink Elephant obviously have a new trophy cabinet, and they’re in a rush to fill it, starting with a 3-1 success. The Division 2 singles, sponsored by Jet Excursions, was a bit more conclusive, with Rob (Club Activo) running out a clear 3-0 winner against Carl (Emerald Lounge). I may be a bit bias because I play for Emerald B, but I am impressed with how many times I had to write “Emerald”! The Division 1 trebles were sponsored by Boom Trikes Tenerife, and Pas O Nadas International were represented by Paul, Quality & Brandon. But they found the Pink Elephant team of Tony, Telf & Per, just too good on the night, losing 4-1. That cabinet is filling up! The Division 1 doubles, sponsored by Scooters & Chevys Bar, saw Pas O Nadas International back in action, with Quality & Robert facing The Pub pairing of Ally & Andy. It was a similar story to the trebles for Pas O Nadas International, because they lost 4-1 again, but heads up Quality for making two finals, which was better than most of us did. Last, but by no means least, the Division 1 singles, which, for many, is the big one, and again. sponsored by Jet Excursions. The Pink Elephant’s Tom played Steve from Suters 20;30 Crew, and there were some top darts thrown, with first-class finishing. It led to another winner’s trophy for Pink Elephant, as Tom prevailed 4-1. Just how big is that cabinet? Well done to all the players, and a big thankyou to all the sponsors. Thanks also to the scorers, (especially the one who did the ladies trebles), as well as Debs & Ray for hosting us, and providing some excellent food. And thanks to Jackie Higgs for arranging the competitions. Finally, we can’t have a report without Graham’s name cropping up. There are no quotes from him, but he gets a big thanks anyway for acting as MC. Don’t tell him, but I think his quotes are better! We also had a catch-up game played on Monday, with Picasso’s welcoming Marilyns. The home team prevailed 6-2, but, as you might see from the picture, everyone clearly enjoyed the night, and especially Lorna, who gained her first-ever win. Well done Lorna. No wonder she had such high praise for the evening. Here’s what she wrote on the Facebook page: “Last night was a fabulous night of darts, Picasso’s 6 Marilyns 2. Got to say, we played Picassos on our very first game of the season, and last night was the return game. You didn’t disappoint, so friendly, and great fun was had by all.” Don’t forget, the Facebook page is there for all of us, so whether you want to ask a question, have a say on something, or find up-to-date info, you should give it a look, even if you don’t already use it. If you want even more info, we also have the website at our disposal, where you can check out fixtures,

results, league tables, contacts, and so on. Here is the link: http://cancertenerife.com/ oasisfmdarts/ Finally, we have the draw, plus handicapping, for the first-round of the Canarian Weekly. Monday night’s result is not yet including in the tables, etc., because it’s too much work for one result. And I’m getting old. I will include it when the next league matches are played, but I’m sure Chas has used it for the handicapping. division 1 ResultS Pas O Nadas Int.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.5% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.
