Kennedy’s tribute to green policies
Continued from Front
The Kennedys were above reproach, the very name Kennedy symbolising all that was good and right. It was the American dream, realised by the hundreds of thousands of Irish people who enjoyed that trip. Today, in 2019, things have changed, utterly, not just in Ireland but all over the world. But the name Kennedy still sparks a sense of reverence, more so than most past US Presidents, except, I would warrant, Barack Obama. But I wasn’t sure how that might be reflected in Spain, and especially in Adeje. When I was asked to be one of the translation team for last weekend’s visit of Bobby Kennedy, the keynote speaker in Adeje, spearheading the Council’s new, action-led green policies, I didn’t think twice! And I wasn’t disappointed, on a personal or professional level, because Bobby, who is the son of Robert Kennedy,
tragically assassinated, carries the name well, with a bearing and public persona which must, at times, be tiresome to maintain. He was mobbed after the conference, and stood for many long minutes, happy to smile and pose for photo after photo. And I confess that if I didn’t have a few in the bag, I’d have been next in line. From the moment we collected him from the airport, directly from a similar conference in Granada (six countries in the last 10 days), he expressed a keen interest in Tenerife, and in Adeje especially! He was also interested in the current economy, and, in the past, in the Guanches and their history, and the stories of water, of energy and of our way of life. He was staying in the Hotel GF Victoria, which was an excellent choice, given that the hotel boasts a 90% dependence on renewableenergy sources, and it is already winning prizes for having the world’s top renewable-energy spa. So interested was Kennedy in the energy situation that he took time out for a tour of the engineering installations, to find out how much water
is recycled, and where it comes from (desalination plants here in Costa Adeje). During the drive from his hotel to a tree-planting ceremony, he and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga talked about the links to the past, and the importance of water in the evolution of Adeje. Kennedy was well impressed with the drive and solar ambition, if I can use the phrase that Mayor Fraga is displaying, and is already turning to positive actions in Adeje. The not-so-long-term plan is
Woman fell on top of car roof
A 35-YEAR-OLD woman suffered serious injuries on Tuesday after falling from a thirdfloor apartment on to the roof of a parked car on Calle Puerto Escondido in El Fraile, Arona. The Canarian emergency services were notified at
around 3.30pm, and the caller requested medical assistance, because of the injuries sustained by the woman. An ambulance was dispatched to the scene, along with an emergency helicopter. But a doctor and nurse from the El Fraile medical centre beat them to it, offering assistance until the emergency teams arrived. The ambulance medics
actually assisted the doctor and nurse, and, between them, they were able to stabilise the victim. They then drove her to the medical helicopter, awaiting her at the football field. The helicopter’s medical staff were well-equipped to evacuate her to Candelaria Hospital, where she was admitted, and kept under close observation.
to make Adeje a renewableenergy hub, with new buildings powered by solar panels. And, given our hours of sunlight, that is a totally-achievable objective. They planted a Drago tree, a symbol of Tenerife, and I reckon it will be known as “Kennedy’s Drago” from now on. The conference itself offered a powerful panel of speakers, including Victoria Ballesteros, a 16-year-old Spanish girl from Adeje, who last year addressed the UN in English, on girls and science, and held the 400-strong audience in Adeje, fixed on her vision of the planet’s future. She said that we could look for culprits among the rich businesses. But unless we also changed, she stressed, there would be no change in the future. Victoria added: “We have to change our mentality… begin to take on actions against climate change, and this is a good time to start.” She also examined the issue of water, its power, and the need to use it wisely, saying that while her generation weren’t experts in climate change, they could promote ideas and change. Juan Verde left Telde, in Gran Canaria, as a teen, but returns now and then to the Canarias, having served as an Under-secretary for State in the Obama administration. He is a fervent believer in the market power of the climatechange economy, and he showed the audience just how and why going green makes so much financial sense. Markets follow success, and climate change, he said, was
a fact, adding that global warming was happening at a much, much quicker pace than at any time in the planet’s past. And, working on projects that counter that, and boost carbon-efficient use, makes market sense. Kennedy’s theme was “Green growth, innovation and tourism”, and the worth of the man was obvious because this was not a preprepared speech. It was written and rewritten to fit what he was learning about Adeje during his time here, and as a result of the conversations he was having. He told the conference that, despite what many might believe, “free market capitalism is very strong tool” in combatting climate change. He added that the most important thing people could do was to get involved in politics. And, yes, protest in the streets, raise their voices and demand action. He said Adeje was lucky to have a leader such as Mayor Fraga, whom he described as “a world-class example of progressiveness and environmental defence”. He also said the Mayor’s vision of seeing the island working from 100% renewableenergy sources was not simply working to protect the environment, but to advance the population’s needs, given that nature is the most important infrastructure in our region. He pointed to the large petrol companies as culprits in blocking the advancement of natural-energy-source use, adding that here in the Canaries, we are paying above the odds for our electricity. The energy revolution would also see democratisation, he said. There is a direct relation between the use of fossil fuels, tyranny and poverty, but renewable-energy sources are free. The sun and the wind are there for everyone. But, obviously, big businesses do not want us to have that kind of free-energy access. Food for thought and certainly a dynamic start to Adeje’s climate-change programme, which will, says the Council, be active from the ground up, with the involvement of residents in the borough essential to the plan’s success.

PEDRO Sánchez, Spain’s caretaker Prime Minister and Socialist Party (PSOE) leader, and Unidas Podemos chief Pablo Iglesias, surprised election voters by striking a deal they had been unable to reach after the April election. The first question the agreement raises is just that: if it were possible to sign an agreement in just a few hours, why were six months spent fruitlessly, and a new election called? Both leaders have a duty to provide a more coherent explanation than the one offered. In any case, the fact that two political forces have announced their willingness to govern together is an important step forward, with respect to the former deadlock. But many details of the agreement have yet to be revealed, particularly the parliamentary strategy the two parties will follow to secure the support they still lack. For now, the document signed by Sánchez and Iglesias is a declaration of intent, as they admit. But until more details emerge about the deal’s content, and how many votes it can muster, not only for appointing the new Prime Minister, but also for forming an effective

government, the public display of goodwill by both leaders could have a positive effect by actually increasing the chances of reaching a majority government. But it could also close the door to other alternatives, and offer easy excuses for a return to the sterility of bloc politics. The document, signed and presented to Congress, is
not a governing programme because it is written in such broad terms that it could contemplate any sort of measure. The most interesting part of it is that this general vagueness is absent from the one main point where it would have been unacceptable: the territorial crisis in Catalonia. In the document, both parties pledge to seek solutions
within the framework of the Constitution, from which it could be deduced that Unidas Podemos has given up on recognising Catalonia’s right to self-determination, and on its demands for a referendum as the way out of the Catalan conundrum. It is an important step forward. Now, the question is whether these promises can be kept if, as it appears,
15th November - 21st November 2019 the men’s’ project for a mutual investiture requires participation by the Catalan independence parties, whether through active support or an abstention. The formulas to take Spain out of its current paralysis cannot rely purely on arithmetic combinations, because it should take into account the unavoidable, political factors. No solution for Catalonia can possibly be found by ignoring the main opposition Popular Party (PP), much less in the current circumstances, when pressure from the far right could place the main opposition party in a position where it feels tempted to radicalise its own rhetoric, to prevent losing support. The plan to give Iglesias one of the many deputy prime ministerial roles, after Sánchez had vetoed this idea during the previous political term, requires an explanation from the Socialist leader. This will surely also force him to clear things up in Brussels, which had welcomed the campaign announcement that caretaker Economy Minister Nadia Calviño would become the new deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs. The two (or three?) deputy PM positions opening up will, obviously, be very different from one another. These and other questions are still awaiting answers. And the fact that the caretaker PM and the leader of Unidas Podemos did not take any questions at their Tuesday news conference, is not the best way to get started!
Fruit-and-veg exporters fear a Morocco-UK deal EXPORTERS of fruit and vegetables in the Canary Islands are concerned about an association agreement, signed on 26th October, between Morocco and the UK. Two professional organisations in the province warn of a new obstacle to local products, recalling that, for example, 50% of tomato and cucumber harvests are exported to the British market. That has been reported by online publication Canaria7, and the two bodies say: “The partnership between Rabat and London is a fatal blow,
against a sector already in agony since the British voted in favour of the EU exit in the referendum of June 23, 2016. Now, three years after the Brexit vote, they fear the disappearance of vital aid for the survival of the activity, once the divorce between the EU and the UK is effective. Exporters want to continue to benefit from the subsidies, included in the Canary Islands Community Agricultural Production Support Programme, “on an exceptional basis”, by calling on the “ultra-specificity of the archipelago”.
The Spanish Federation of the associations of Producers and Exporters of fruit and vegetables, less alarmist than the archipelago professionals, said in a statement: “The 26th October agreement should allow Morocco to strengthen its exports to the UK market.” The same statement recalls: “Morocco is already a competitor of the Spanish sector.” The UK is the third-largest destination for fruit and vegetables produced in Spain, after France and Germany.

Tanker recovered from the beach in Tacaronte
A SPECIALISED, 124m crane has recovered a tanker truck, loaded with 3,000 litres of diesel, which crashed over a hillside, onto La Garañona beach. The Tacoronte Council said the Spanish Government
and Tenerife Cabildo had to undertake the work, given the “inactivity” of the insurer to solve this situation, as well as the danger of a possible spillage in an area of high, environmental value. The truck owners, according to the Council, have complained that the insurance company had not approved any of the
alternatives proposed to remove the machine. The specialised crane was brought into assist last Friday, but, firstly, the ground had to be prepared to keep the crane stabilised enough to lift the tanker. Thankfully, on Sunday morning, the four-ton vehicle was removed from its salty surroundings.

Get registered… and vote in UK’s Election THE United Kingdom is holding a General Election on 12th December and British citizens, who have been abroad for 15 years or less, can register as overseas voters. For more information, go to https://www.gov.uk/votingwhen-abroad. Once registered, you must renew your registration every year, and you will be given a reminder when it is time to renew. If you do not renew it, you will be removed from the register and will have to make a fresh application to vote again. Steps have been taken to help speed up the delivery of postal votes overseas, and people are advised to send them back in good time, especially during a period as busy for post in the UK as is December. You can vote from Spain in two ways: by post or by proxy. Overseas voters, re-registering to vote, or newly-applying to use a postal vote in the days running up to the deadlines, should seriously consider the option of a proxy, because, at that stage, there will be reduced time needed to send out, complete, and return a postal vote from overseas.
If you want to vote by post in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your postal vote application by 5pm on 26th November. If you want to vote by proxy in Great Britain, your local Electoral Registration Office must receive your proxy vote application by 5pm on 4th December. You cannot vote by post from abroad if your registered address is in Northern Ireland. If you are registered there, applications to vote by proxy must be received by 5pm on 21st November by the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I would encourage all British citizens to register to vote if you are able to, and you should consider voting by proxy to ensure your vote is counted.” UK Nationals can vote and stand in local elections in Spain, as long as they are registered on their local padrón. NEWS IN BRIEF Embassy staff and
Hiker rescued by helicopter
Consulates respect Armistice services
TENERIFE’S emergency services were alerted to a hiker, who was injured while out walking in the Santiago del Teide area last Monday. But because of the location, a Level II alert was put out and the helicopter was required. Local fire-fighters attended, along with those from San Miguel, and the helicopter assisted with the recovery. The unidentified hiker was transferred to hospital.
Adeje’s leading hotel trio
OF the five award-winning hotels in Spain at the World Travel Market 2019, three of them are in Costa Adeje. These are the Hotel Bahía del Duque, awarded for having the Best Customer Service; the Royal Hideaway Corales Resort, for being the best hotel for families; and GF Victoria, as the one which best presents accessible tourism.
Blaze smokes out trio
THREE people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in their home, at a Calle Borondon apartment in the Adeje municipality. The emergency services were notified just after 8am, and fire-fighters, Local Police, and two ambulances were immediately sent to help fight the blaze, as well as taking care of the victims. But once they had arrived, the fire was already out, the neighbours assisting the residents to extinguish the flames. However, the fire-fighters helped ventilate the area, while the medical team assessed all three inhabitants, who were suffering from smoke inhalation. The three victims comprised an 85-year-old man, another aged 46, as well as a seven-year-old child. Fortunately, all three were stabilised by the medical team at the scene, and there was no need for them to be taken to hospital. Local Police were at the scene to assist with procedures.
Teenage thug threatens group
A VIOLENT 18-year-old robber, already carrying a criminal record for his behaviour, was arrested by the National Police in Fuerteventura’s Puerto del Rosario. He was arrested after threatening a group of friends with a knife, looking for cash. The officers responded to a call from one of the wouldbe victims, who gave the officers a full description of the person who had issued the threat. Police were told how the teenager approached the group of friends, waving the knife while insisting they handed over their cash. He then ran off, but officers searched the vicinity and soon located the thug. He was found with two knives in his possession, as well as two €5 notes, and is now waiting to see a judge.
THE British Embassy in Madrid, and Consulates across Spain, marked the Armistice by taking part in solemn acts of remembrance last Sunday and Monday. This year is particularly significant because it signifies not only 80 years since the start of World War II, but also 70 years since the founding of NATO, an organisation committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes, of which both the UK and Spain are members. Every year, many UK nationals attend Remembrance events across Spain. And these services and other events are a way for communities to come together to honour those who served, and also to ensure that their sacrifices are never forgotten. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I am proud to wear the poppy, as a symbol, not only of remembrance, but of hope for a peaceful future. In every act of remembrance, we honour the memory of the fallen, and pledge to care for the living.” He added: “I am grateful that so many Embassy and Consulate staff have taken part in events right across Spain, and that the British communities here hold services of remembrance each year. “It is incredibly important that we continue to commemorate the fallen, and reflect on the importance of peace.” Staff representing the Embassy and Consulates took part in many Remembrance Sunday services across Spain,
including HMA Hugh Elliott reading at the Remembrance service at St George’s Church, Madrid, alongside Consul Sarah-Jane Morris, Defence Attaché Captain Ian Clarke and members of the British armed forces. Elsewhere, Consul General Lloyd Milen gave a reading at an Ibiza service in Ibiza, while Consul Charmaine Arbouin laid a wreath at Malaga’s English cemetery.
And in Tenerife, Vice Consul Helen Keating read the Act of Commitment and laid a wreath in the sea at Westhaven Bay, Tenerife, alongside representatives of the island’s Royal British Legion. Alicante Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm gave a reading in Orihuela Costa, and the Barcelona Vice Consul laid a wreath at the Madremanya service.

Thief helps himself to €30,000 jewellery haul A MAN aged 40 has been arrested, after forcing his way into a La Laguna house in the Geneto area and stealing valuable jewellery items, worth around €30,000.
Emergency landing down to false alarm
A BINTER flight was believed to have run into trouble on Wednesday morning, when the pilot said he was forced to make an emergency landing, shortly after take-off, because of a technical fault with an engine.
The National Police began investigating after they received a report from a property owner, claiming that several valuable pieces of jewellery had been stolen from the family home. What caught the officers’ attention was the huge €30,000 estimate of the stolen goods. When they began investigating, they discovered that the property showed no sign of a forced entry, so they took a closer look at the people surrounding the family; those who were familiar with the family’s routine, and those who had access to the home. They learned that a maintenance man had been working on the family home recently, by refurbishing several areas of the premises. The police also discovered that he had entered the
premises, carefully, by climbing through a window, which was when he took advantage by stealing the jewellery. Officers soon identified the thief, who was arrested in La Laguna. The officers searched the individual’s home, in which they recovered most of the
missing jewellery. Some of the items had already been sold to a second-hand jewellery shop. But, fortunately for the family, all the stolen items were accounted for and returned to the owners. As for the thief, he is in police custody, awaiting his appointment with a judge.
SPAIN’S National Police, working alongside the Italian equivalent, Arma dei Carabinieri, have arrested a Mafia ringleader in the San Bartolome de Tirajana town of Gran Canaria.
The arrest followed the Italian authorities’ European Order for his Detention and Delivery (OEDE). The Order was put in place after an investigation into an international drugtrafficking ring, which came to light while the Italians were checking out an anti-Mafia operation called Neve di Marzo.
The man is recognised as one of the most notorious members of the Mafia Organisation, La Cuarta Mafia, based in Vieste city, inside the province of Foggi. These Mafia men are renowned for violence and cruelty, as well as using dangerous weapons freely, such as the AK-47A Kalashnikov and 12-calibre rifles. The arrested man is an important leader of the group, considered to be playing the main negotiating role with other members of organised criminal groups, as well as trafficking drugs like cocaine, hashish and marijuana. Following the arrest, the European Investigation Order, issued by the Italian Public Prosecutor’s Office, enabled the police to search inside the detainee’s home, in the Maspalomas town, to look for more evidence to confirm his relationship with the Mafia.

However, it was later established that the alert was a “false alarm”, although
the pilot acted correctly after detecting a technical incident. The flight’s route runs between Tenerife North and Gran Canaria, and it left Tenerife at 7am, with 72 passengers and four cabincrew members on board. The incident occurred as the flight approached Gran Canaria, and the pilot requested permission to land immediately after discovering the fault. He landed the plane without incident, and the relevant emergency services were present on the runway.
Reader left with stars in his eyes
Mafia chief is arrested in joint police venture A BAFFLED reader has shared a mysterious photograph with local newspaper Diario de Avisos, which he took at precisely 8pm in El Fraile last Tuesday, specifically in Calle Ladera del Teide. He was surprised by the image he caught, especially as it was captured with a mobilephone camera, with very poor lighting. The reader said that everything happened in the space of 20 seconds.
The lights moved at a moderate speed, and, as they disappeared on one side, they reappeared on the other. The man said he was left a little stunned after his sighting. But on reflection, he believes it could be star-linked satellites. He was aware that on the previous day, objects were launched into the atmosphere, with the intention of forming a constellation, specifically to assist with broadband coverage to a large part of the world’s population. And in the second image, you can see a series of starlinked satellites, launched in May this year.

Five boat migrants die, but four are recovered THE Emergency Services confirmed on Wednesday that they had recovered the bodies of five people, while rescuing another four people alive.
The drama occurred after a boat carrying immigrants capsized off the coast of Lanzarote. Authorities said the accident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, when the boat hit rocks close to the town of Teguise, on the east coast. Conditions at the time of the accident were described as “adverse”, with high winds and powerful waves in the area. The four survivors were found by Guardia Civil officers at around 8.10am, with the survivors reported to have told authorities that a total of 12 people were travelling in the boat. Maritime Rescue Services, the Guardia Civil and the Local Police, as well as Civil Protection, all have boats out, looking for
A COURT order protecting the identity of two police officers, charged after an inquiry into the death of Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson, has been lifted by a judge at Birmingham Crown Court. Judge Simon Drew QC overturned the Contempt of Court Act order, allowing the names of West Mercia Police Constables Benjamin Monk and Mary Ellen BettleySmith to be made public, after submissions by media organisations. Both officers were present at the hearing, at which their lawyers agreed that anonymity could not be justified. Instead, they argued that their home addresses should not be revealed in media reports. A further hearing to decide the issue of addresses was held yesterday (Thursday). Monk, 41, accused of murdering the former Premier League star, faces an alternate charge

while making the journey from Africa to the islands this year, and among them were four people who lost their lives when the boat they were travelling in sunk, off the south coast of Gran Canaria, on 29th October. In addition, a woman

His family claimed after his death that the Taser device was deployed at least three times. The Independent Office for Police Conduct placed the two officers under criminal investigation, days after the tragedy. They were interviewed under caution, most recently last summer, and also served with “gross misconduct” notices. Last October, it emerged that a file of evidence had been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service to
consider potential criminal charges. The CPS announced the charges last Thursday, shortly before the officers appeared at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court. They were referred to during the proceedings as Constable A (Mr Benjamin Monk) and Constable B (Ms Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith). Mr Monk was released on unconditional bail after making a later appearance at Birmingham Crown Court, while Ms Bettley-Smith indicated a “not guilty” plea to a charge of assault and she was also granted bail. They are now set to appear at the same court on 9th December. Lawyers for the two officers argued successfully for their names and addresses to be

But that restriction was lifted after a further hearing. Relatives of Mr Atkinson said he was suffering from ill-health and had a weak heart, before he was Tasered. In a statement after his death, his siblings described him as “a kind, caring and protective brother”. They added: “He always brought life and energy to family gatherings. When Dalian turned up, we knew there would be laughter and banter.” Kate Maynard, a solicitor for the Atkinson family, said they welcomed the charges against the two officers. But she added: “They “regretted that already more than three years have passed since Dalian died.” Deborah Coles, director of the Inquest charity, also welcomed the CPS charging decision, saying: “We hope the next stages of this prosecution are pursued promptly, and the upmost scrutiny of the officers’ actions is ensured.”

Spain-Lithuania combine to smash a sex-slave ring SPANISH National Police, along with their Lithuanian counterparts, have smashed a sex-slave ring in an operation led by the judicial authorities in both countries, in close co-operation with Eurojust and Europol. The combination led to the arrest of two alleged organisers in Spain, and 13 alleged criminal group members in Lithuania. At least 50 searches were carried out in both countries, with cash, drugs, counterfeit documents, weapons and ammunition seized. A car fitted with police lights was also found! The large-scale investigation spanned two years and uncovered the activities of an organised criminal group, active in Lithuania. Gang bosses also operated out of Malaga, on the Costa del Sol. The criminal group profited from the earnings of 118
female victims of enforced prostitution, from Ukraine, Belarus and other countries working in Lithuania. Victims and competitors were subject to extreme violence by the gang. The arrested hoodlums were previously known by the authorities for crimes such as robbery, trafficking of human beings and sexual exploitation. They have all been detained and are awaiting trial, and their assets have been frozen. Eurojust and Europol support-
ed this joint investigation by organising co-ordination and operational meetings. Eurojust strengthened both factors, between the Lithuanian and Spanish national judicial authorities, throughout the two-year investigation, leading up to the simultaneous operation. Eurojust, in constant contact with the national authorities about the best way to proceed with the investigation, co-ordinated and facilitated the execution of European Investigation Orders and
European Arrest Warrants. Europol provided analytical support from the early stage of the co-operation between Spain and Lithuania. It also supported the action day by deploying experts in fighting human-trafficking to Lithuania, to cross-check operational information in real time against Europol’s databases. Europol, which also assisted in extracting data from seized devices, activated a Virtual Command Post to support the action day.

Dodgy dozen promised women paradise
TWELVE people have been ordered to the Santa Cruz courts for sentencing in the next few days, following an ongoing humantrafficking case. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the dodgy dozen formed a criminal organisation, specialising in capturing Nigerian woman, mainly, and promising them “paradise homes”, as well as regular work with high salaries. But it became clear to the Prosecutor’s Office that “voodoo” (a form of magic) was used on several occasions to subdue the women. The Nigerians were promised a better lifestyle in Spain, but, to get there, they had to travel precariously, taking routes via Libya and Italy. From there, they travelled on to Tenerife, via Madrid. But when they arrived on the island, they were forced to prostitute themselves, and were threatened with voodoo.

illegally-bought buses, which have now been seized by police. It is alleged that MDB did not comply with payment procedures, and, also, that some of his passengers were young children. His lack of the correct documentation also meant that drivers employed by him were not insured correctly. The suspect mainly ran his operations in Talavera de la Reina, where he is based, as well as “nationwide” services, according to officers.
A Guardia Civil statement said that companies hiring MDB’s buses were unaware that they ‘had been acquired illegally’. Police discovered his illegal buses in Spanish areas, as far-flung as Madrid, Toledo, Valencia, Malaga, Almeria and Zaragoza. Guardia officers made their arrest under the “Bustalva” operation, following a tipoff from Madrid’s Traffic Sector. The fraudster now faces alleged crimes of fraud and falsifying documents.

address on suspicion of the encouragement of terrorism and dissemination of terrorist publications, under Sections 1 and 2 of the Terrorism Act. Both men were detained and taken to south London police stations, where they remain in custody. Officers are now carrying out searches at the two residential addresses where the men were arrested. They are also searching a third commercial premises in the area, confirmed a spokesperson. The investigation is expected to be ongoing.
THE famous donkey “taxies” of Mijas, on the Costa del Sol, will soon be breathing a sigh of relief because, from the new year, they will not have to transport passengers weighing more than 80kg. It is one of the measures contained in a proposed local law for the town, regulating the service. The donkey rides have been growing ever more controversial in recent years, as various people have raised animal-welfare issues. The new law aims to address people’s concerns. But, initially, it has to be rubberstamped after public consultation, although this is seen as a formality. Mijas Town Council is tightening up veterinary controls, which will be intensified, and conditions will also be improved, both in the stables and at the taxi ranks.
Transport and Mobility Councillor Nicolas Cruz says that all the measures contained in the new regulations are the result of meetings, held by the Town Council, with muleteers and various animal groups. Cllr Cruz says that the regulations take into account the need for animal welfare, as well as the interests of the donkeyhandlers, and the Council itself. Veronica Sanchez, Director of the Refugio del Burros donkey sanctuary, said: “We are very happy to have reached this point, which includes the concept of animal welfare and its development with specific
measures, and abides by national and European regulations. “It is something pioneering, because they will be incorporated into municipal ordinances.” The Department of Transport and Mobility has also announced that information and awareness-raising campaigns will be carried out. Cllr Cruz said that the search was on to uncover alternative locations for the current stables. “They will respond to the needs that the current ones do not cover, because our facilities date from 50 years ago, and the regulations have changed a lot,” he added.

Man’s death at memorial service
BENIDORM police have been criticised heavily, following emails which revealed that they allowed missing British man Philip Pearce walk out of a police station, in the dead of night, in a A MAN, not known to clearly “confused and those attending a Re- disoriented state”. membrance Sunday service in north Wales, The family of the greatgrandfather now demand at Caernarfon Castle, answers from Benidorm was heard screaming police about why he was for help just before released on 10th September, at 3am, which was his lastmidday, shortly be- known sighting. fore dying. The pensioner, from Guests were evacuated from the landmark, moments after the traditional two-minute silence was observed. Paramedics from the air ambulance rushed to help the stricken man, but they were unable to save him. A witness told North Wales Live how a member of the emergency services went into nearby shops and asked staff to pull down the blinds as the body was removed from the castle. Eleri Gray-Thomas, who runs the café opposite, said: “It is very sad to hear.” The man’s identity was not known, but he was believed to be an overseas visitor.
Bridgewater, Somerset, was taken to the station after he became lost while on holiday, it was presumed. He was known to have signs of early-onset dementia. But in a shocking email from the British Consulate, seen by the Olive Press online newspaper, there are suggestions of a breach of duty of care. What is not clear, however, is how and why he was allowed to leave the station three hours later. “The police are simply not answering our questions,” his 41-year-old son, Lee Pearce, told the Olive Press. “It’s absolutely gutwrenching for us as a family,

not knowing where he is and why he disappeared. I just want him home so badly. I miss him so much.” Philip was known to be suffering from the early signs of dementia, but was “happy and smiling” when he went to Alicante with a friend and travelling partner. He then left his Playa Levante hotel at 5.30pm on 9th September to buy cigarettes, before he lost his bearings and was taken to police. Two months on, Lee told the Olive Press that a request for
a ground search and sniffer dogs was ignored, while the family were left searching for answers. “We just need closure on whether my dad is still alive,” added Lee. “But apart from claiming to have sent out some drones to look, the police don’t seem to be doing anything at all.” The official text reveals that the pensioner had clearly told the National Police he did not remember where he was staying, nor even where he came from in England. The Consulate email also stated that Philip was carrying neither his passport nor his wallet, when he was taken by a stranger to the police station in the Old Town, just after midnight, as CCTV footage confirmed. Scores of British residents have spent weeks searching for signs of the grandfatherof-three. David McQueen, who owns cab firm Alicante Transfers, has spent four to five hours daily, scouring abandoned buildings and traveller
communities around the Costa Blanca. “I even sent my dog out with a GoPro camera to search in every bush and in every corner, but we’ve found nothing,” said McQueen “I’ve got 130 taxi drivers that start at 4am and finish at 2am, but none of the hotels and establishments has seen a sign of Philip.” The family have spent weeks putting up posters and handing out flyers of his missing father around Benidorm, with contact details. A spokeswoman for the British Consulate said: “We do not comment on individual cases such as this.” A National Police spokesman claimed that helicopters had been scrambled to search for Philip on various Benidorm hillsides. However, the spokesman failed to answer questions about the exact details of his release from the station, or whether sniffer dogs and ground searches had been deployed, or would be soon.

MOST of Europe’s major cities are expanding sustainable forms of transportation, but Madrid’s authorities are bucking the trend with plans to eliminate cycling space.
There is a consensus among urban planners and mobility experts that cities should forfeit some of the space used by private vehicles to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists, to reduce pollution levels. Most of Europe’s capitals have created a network of cycle lanes in recent years, and extended their pedestrian zones. Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Seville and, more recently, London, Paris, Berlin, Barcelona and Valencia are all becoming cycle-friendly, and pedal-power is even being championed in cities where the car is king, such as New York, Bogotá and Mexico City. This makes it all the more staggering that Madrid City Council has declared it is planning to remove a bike lane for the benefit of drivers. “At this point, it’s very strange to be seeing cycle paths removed to reopen lanes for private vehicles,” said Valeria Fedeli, President of the European Urban Research

Madrid bike-lane cut shocks Spain’s other capital cities
Association, (EURA). “Most mayors across the world are changing their cities to introduce new ways of getting around.” José María Ezquiaga, President of the Spanish Association of Urban Technicians, agreed, saying: “The global trend is to reduce the tarmac. For cycling to be a viable means of transport, it needs to be simple and safe for everyone, which involves creating a network of bike lanes across the entire city.” But, said a spokesperson for Madrid City Council, the cycle lane being removed is just 850m long, and on the Gran Vía of Madrid’s Hortaleza district, in the north of the city. It was created by former Mayor Manuela Carmena, and is a no-car zone, although cars must drive across it to reach a number of designated parking spaces. The authorities have justified its removal by arguing that
it is generating congestion in the area. “We will return all the lanes that don’t help cycling mobility to their original use,” said Mayor José Luis Martínez Almeida, after his controversial announcement. However, when queried by EL PAÍS newspaper, city officials were unable to explain the exact criteria for the cycle lane reversal. Almeida and his deputy, Begoña Villacís, having initially removed the pedestrian zone on Galileo street, recently created by the previous administration, returned it to private vehicles. Now, City Hall is studying the removal of at least two additional cycle lanes. Madrid has just 43km of lanes reserved for cyclists, some segregated and others defined by lines on the road. Yet Barcelona, which has half the population of the Spanish capital, has a 209km network.
And Seville and Valencia, with populations of 688,000 and 791,000 respectively, have bike lanes totalling 200m and 150m. The global trend is not just to extend the number of cycle lanes, but also to improve those already in place by physically separating them from the rest of the traffic to make them safer. “London, Berlin and Paris are trading the lanes designated with paint for protected ones,” said David Lois, a lecturer at UNED and researcher at the Transportation Research Centre at Madrid Polytechnic University. Last week, New York City Council announced a $1.7bn plan that includes the creation of 400km of protected bike lanes, prompted by the death of 25 cyclists this year. Many angry New Yorkers have, in the past, argued that they reduce parking space and affect retail
business. And, in some cases, the authorities have even been taken to court. “Many studies indicate that cycle lanes benefit the local economy,” said Giuseppe Grezzi, Valencia’s Mobility Councillor. “We have been criticised, but the results have shown us to be right.” Esther Anaya, researching bicycle mobility at Imperial College, London, is also critical of Madrid’s regressive move. “This backward step is not only embarrassing but it’s also an attack on people’s health,” she said. “We either opt for speed and pollution, or give this space over to bicycles and pedestrians to promote active and healthy mobility.” Nacho Tomás, secretary of the City Network for Bicycles, which encompasses more than 100 towns and cities across Spain, including Madrid, said: “We are against getting rid of cycle lanes in any Spanish city, and support the construction of protected lanes to improve cyclist safety. “Madrid is the only city in the world that has thought of getting rid of cycle lanes,” said Niccolo Panozzo, spokesman for the European Cyclists Federation (ECF). “From Portland to Bogotá, and Singapore to Tel Aviv, every other city is moving in the opposite direction.”

A 41-YEAR-OLD man contracted the mosquito-borne viral disease dengue fever, after having unprotected sex with another man who had returned from Cuba and the Dominican Republic. After being warned of the patient’s condition at Madrid’s Ramon y Cajal Hospital in September, an epidemiological investigation was launched. The General Directorate of Public Health confirmed that the affected man was the first to acquire the disease in Spain, caused by any of the four dengue viruses. This virus may induce a high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle and joint pains, and a characteristic skin rash, and recovery generally takes two to seven days. The affected man had not left Spain in the 45 days prior to the first signs of any symptoms. However, his partner, who had travelled to the Caribbean countries during the incubation period, had been in Spain for just 10 days before the onset of symptoms. Health officials confirmed that the disease had been transmitted through his partner’s semen. It was only

discovered by scientists that the disease could be live in semen 18 months ago, when a traveller, who had been in Thailand, was studied. Of the case in Spain, Public Health representative Susana Jimenez said: “His partner presented the same symptoms as him, but lighter, around 10 days earlier, and he had previously visited Cuba and the Dominican Republic. “An analysis of their sperm was carried out, which revealed that not only did they have dengue, but that it was exactly the same as the virus circulating in Cuba.” Officials at the European
Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said: “To our knowledge, It’s the first sexual transmission of the dengue virus, among men who have sex with men.” The World Health Organisation (WHO) advice reads: “The global incidence of dengue has grown, dramatically, in recent decades. About half the world’s population is now at risk. The virus responsible for causing dengue, is called dengue virus (DENV). There are four types of DENV serotypes (DENV1, DENV2, DENV3 and DENV4), which means that it is possible to be infected four times.”
THE Spanish region of Valencia is to ban gendered school uniforms, to ensure that no student will be “forced to wear a skirt because of his or her sex”. Valencia’s governing parties, Socialists PSOE, left-wing coalition Compromís and anti-austerity party Podemos, presented the proposal on 30th October, arguing that gendered school uniforms violated “students’ individual freedoms and right to nondiscrimination”. The proposal aims to reform the 2008 decree that regulates “order in non-university educational centres, maintained by public funding”. And, given that the parties hold the majority in the regional government, the reform is expected to meet approval without any problems. A Compromís spokesperson confirmed that the ban would affect both public and chartered schools, known in Spanish as escuelas concertadas, which are
private centres which are either totally or partially subsidised by public funds. The initiative enshrines a student’s “complete individual freedom”, and expresses, explicitly, that they will not be forced to wear a skirt because of their sex. The measure was presented to the Education and Culture Commission in the Corts Valencianes, the main legislative body of the Valencian government, by Socialist regional deputy Ana Besalduch. According to Besalduch: “The ban will help adapt public-school regulation to the 21st century.” Pilar Lima, from Podemos, said it was a necessary step towards an equal and inclusive school. Papi Robles, from Compromís, said gendered school uniforms violated the principle of equality before the law and non-discrimination, which includes sexual and gender diversity.

Estate planning for UK nationals in Spain
Partner, blevins Franks
British expatriates living in Spain need to be aware of, and plan for, a number of inheritance issues. Your last will and testament If you live in Spain, it is advisable to make a Spanish will to deal with your Spanish assets. It is easier to wind up an estate using a local will. A UK will may be effective in Spain, but a major disadvantage is that it will have to go through the UK probate process. This can create long delays and high costs, and it has to be notarised and translated, before being accepted in Spain. If you have assets in the UK you can have two wills, one for each country. Spanish succession law In the UK, you are generally free to distribute your estate as you wish, but Spanish succession law imposes “forced heirship” rules. In general terms, children are entitled to receive two thirds of an estate’s assets, so, under Spanish law, you cannot leave everything to your spouse.
MAKING a claim for a delayed flight no longer requires the affected passenger to show his or her boarding pass as proof, rules the European Court of Justice (ECJ). When a flight is three hours, or more, late in departing, despite reaching its destination less than three hours later than planned, passengers are automatically entitled to €250 compensation for short-haul, or €600 for longhaul flights, The airline is also obliged by international law to provide refreshments or vouchers for the same, although the sum is not stipulated, as well as overnight accommodation, if the plane’s time slots make this necessary. Generally, as these compensation sums are standard, reclaiming them is a painless, administrative exercise, handled by mainstream customer-
This Spanish succession law will apply to foreign nationals, living in Spain by default. You can, however, use a European Succession Regulation, “Brussels IV”, to opt for the succession law of your country of nationality, to apply on your death, instead. You must specifically state this in your will. Spanish succession and gift tax Inheritance tax in Spain works very differently from UK inheritance tax. Tax is paid by each recipient, not the estate, and the tax rate varies, depending on the relationship between the person passing the money, and the person receiving the
money. There is no blanket spouse-to-spouse exemption. The state tax rates range from 7.65% to 34%. Multipliers based on the familial relationship and beneficiary’s net worth can take tax rates much higher. Reductions and allowances are low. Spouses, descendants and ascendants only receive a reduction of €15,957; it is lower (or nil) for everyone else. There is a 95% reduction against an inherited main home, but only for spouses or descendants who keep the property for at least 10 years, capped at €122,606 per inheritor. However, the autonomous communities can adjust the
tax rates, allowances and reductions, to make them more beneficial for residents in the different Spanish regions. In the Canary Islands, the 99.9% relief applicable for inheritances to Group II was extended to Group III beneficiaries, for tax year 2019. Spanish succession and gift tax is due if the asset being inherited or gifted is located in Spain, or if the recipient is resident in Spain. UK inheritance tax Many British expatriates remain liable to UK inheritance tax, because it is based on domicile rather than residence. Your estate could be liable to both UK and
‘Delayed flight’ boarding pass not needed for claim
service departments. Yet passengers set to fly between Paris and Venice on an easyJet flight, on 24th October, were denied payment, after their return to the French capital was delayed by three hours and seven minutes.
They were told they had to provide their original boarding passes, to be able to claim their standard €250. The airline did not deny the flight had been over three hours late in taking off, but it would not pay up without sight of the boarding passes,
so the affected passengers applied to a court in Paris. French judges sought clarification from the ECJ, which confirmed that Article 7 of European regulation 261/2004 found easyJet to be in breach of its legal duties. The ruling states that an airline cannot refuse payments, solely on the basis of the passengers’ not having produced proof of checking-in, unless it is able to provide clear evidence that the traveller never even boarded the aircraft. If the airline has transported passengers with confirmed bookings, it is understood, by default, that they have complied with the requirement to present themselves for check-in. Proof of this already exists without extra evidence, in the form of a boarding pass, having to be requested. Spanish-based association Reclamador de Vuelos
Spanish inheritance taxes, but credit is given in Spain for tax paid in the UK. Succession planning Start by establishing your goals. Who would you like to benefit from your estate? Do you want to control how they receive their inheritance? What can you do to make the inheritance process as easy and cost-effective as possible for them? Then seek specialist, crossborder advice on how you can achieve your wishes for your heirs, while keeping inheritance taxes as low as possible. Estate planning for Spain and the UK can get complex, but, with careful planning you can get peace of mind that you have the most suitable approach in place, for yourself and your family. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. (“Flight Reclaimer”) says the ECJ verdict is binding in all European courts. Its Communications Manager, Javier López, said: “This is a great change for passengers, who, on many occasions, throw their boarding passes in the bin as soon as they get off the plane, or these passes, not in paper format, “disappear” from the airline’s App on the passenger’s phone, once the flight date has passed. “This is a very common situation, with airlines trying to pull a fast one when a passenger claims compensation for a delay, attempting to wriggle out of it with no boarding pass to show.” López added: “But this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your boarding pass, or a copy of it, because, despite the ECJ verdict, a boarding pass can still provide valuable information in proving your case in the event of any dispute. “We always advise affected passengers to keep theirs, and take a copy of it if they send the original by post.”

The Hit List The Hit List is an exciting and addictive music quiz hosted by Marvin and Rochelle Humes, where three teams of music lovers compete for the chance to win £10,000 by naming as many song titles and artists as possible. In this first episode sisters Sara and Vanessa from London, friends John and Rachel from Glasgow, and father and son duo Fluff and Freddie from Kent, are all competing to show off their music knowledge in a bid to win £10,000. Across three exciting rounds, they’re put to the test as they attempt to identify huge hits from across the years - whether it’s a song from the swinging ‘60s or the number one track from today’s charts, the teams must prove their ability to recognise songs and artists from all genres of music: from pop to rock, R’n’B to country and many more. Round One is all about speed. The teams are played a selection of clips from hit tracks and must press their button whenever they recognise a song. All the songs in this round are themed: whether it’s having to identify two songs written by the same songwriter or attempting to remember what song was at number two in the charts when another was at number one, the teams must rely on their music memory to answer quickly enough. The first two teams to give five correct answers progress though to round two. Round two is all about the intros. The two remaining teams must identify a range of song titles and artists by listening to the very beginning of the songs and recognising them before their time runs out. The teams are given visual clues to help them - whether it’s a map showing where the singer is originally from, or an image of a famous person whose name is mentioned in the song’s lyrics, each team must work against the clock to ensure their time doesn’t run out. The first team to run out of time will be sent home. Only one team will make it through to the last round, which is guaranteed to get your heart racing: The Final Chart Rundown. This round sees the final team attempting to make it to the number one spot by recognising 10 songs and artists before their money runs out. The team will start the round with £10,000 available in their prize pot, but after five seconds of each track has played the money starts to drop. If the team can correctly name 10 song titles and artists before the money disappears, they’ll go home with whatever is left in the pot. This highly intense and exciting round is the ultimate test in how quickly the Hit-Listers can recognise songs - the longer they take, the less they make.

England 1905. Amy (Eleanor Tomlinson) and George (Rafe Spall) are neighbourhood pariahs - they’ve fallen deeply in love but George is married to another woman. This doesn’t bother their astronomer friend Ogilvy (Robert Carlyle) in the slightest, who feels like an outcast himself. Amy and George visit Ogilvy’s observatory where they witness eruptions from Mars. George, a journalist at the London Evening Chronicle, visits his brother Frederick (Rupert Graves), Secretary to the Minister for War, at the Admiralty, and begs for his help. He needs his brother to convince Lucy, George’s wife, to sign divorce papers. Frederick is indignant at George’s decision and refuses outright. A mysterious capsule lands in Horsell Common. Amy, George and Ogilvy are among the first to notice and examine it. Is it an asteroid? Stent (Daniel Cerqueira), Astronomer Royal, certainly seems to think so, and when the capsule starts to shudder and move he’s the first to act. He’s also the first to die. The capsule rises into the air and unleashes a devastating heat ray, killing hundreds. Amy and George can’t find Ogilvy anywhere. They rush home, but it’s not safe there either - something has come out of the capsule and it’s on the move. They decide to go to Frederick at the Admiralty. But just as they start their escape from Woking the fighting machine in the capsule takes its full tripod form and blasts out another heat ray: Amy manages to escape while George disappears behind rubble and smoke. Amy arrives at the Admiralty and explains everything to Frederick, who wants to know where his brother is and if he’s alive. Amy can’t say for sure, but she does reveal a secret, one that not even George knows.

The 60-minute show will pay tribute to the winners of this year’s 25th Birthday National Lottery Awards, the annual search for the UK’s favourite National Lotteryfunded projects and people. From over 700 entries, 40 were selected as finalists in four categories reflecting the different areas the National Lottery funds. The four projects who won a public vote will be revealed on the night with the help of celebrity guest presenters, including Hugh Bonneville, Torvill & Dean, Laurence Fox, John Torrode and Gregg Wallace, Strictly Come Dancing’s Karim Zeroual and Amy Bowden, Sir Chris Hoy and Ellie Simmonds. The categories are: Best Arts, Culture and Film Project / Best Heritage Project / Best Sports Project / Best Community & Charity Project There will be three new Awards for individuals - Young Hero, Sporting Legend and Lifetime Achievement Awards. Plus a Special Recognition Award, recognising an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to society with the help of National Lottery funding. Ore Oduba, who will be presenting the show for the third year, says: “The National Lottery marks it’s 25th Birthday this year, a landmark moment to celebrate the incredible difference The National Lottery has made to the lives of people and communities across the UK. It’s such an honour to be a part of a show which celebrates the inspirational people and projects that do extraordinary things with National Lottery funding. Everyone who plays the National Lottery should be very proud to have supported these individuals and organisations - what they have achieved is truly amazing.” It’s thanks to National Lottery players, who raise £30 million each week for good causes, that these extraordinary projects are possible.

ITV’s international current affairs series continues with more revealing stories from around the world. In Detroit every day, in a bid to cut crime, thousands of CCTV images from across the city are live streamed into the downtown police headquarters as part of “Project Green Light.” Carl Dinnen investigates the controversial use of facial recognition software, that is said to misidentify African American faces at higher rates than white ones, in a city with a largely black population. Tom Clarke travels to Colombia to meet the man fighting to save South America’s elusive pink River Dolphins from extinction. Lucrezia Milarini is in Berlin where the city council has approved drastic measures to curb surging rents.

BBC1, 21.00
When Julia (Julia Ormond) brings Benjamin (Ben Barnes) to her home in Devon, he is taken aback by its size. Their honeymoon period is interrupted by Ted (Alex Jennings), who come to check out this younger man. The atmosphere is barbed between the exes, with Ted insinuating that Julia is only with Benjamin because of her recent divorce. Feeling judged, Julia decides to return to London, telling Benjamin she’d like to get to know his friends. At a club, and feeling out of her depth, Julia meets Zac (David Avery) and Bianca (Elena Saurel) and learns about Benjamin’s messy recent break-up. Across town, Della is gearing up to confront her own past - turning up unannounced on the doorstep of her ex Emily (Maeve Dermody). It’s a painful encounter and it sends Della (Jemima Roooper) off on another bender. Back at the club, and with the night drawing to a close, Julia asks Benjamin for his address, but he is cagey, having thought they were going to the hotel. He refuses to allow her back to his flat, causing Julia wonder what he’s hiding. Hurt, Benjamin packs her off in a taxi alone. Julia throws herself on the mercy of her son Patrick (Sebastian Armesto). Seeing his mother so upset, Patrick pressurises Della into actively investigating Benjamin - and what they find out changes everything.

Sorry kids; chips not on Sainsbury’s menu
SUPERMARKET giant Sainsbury’s has not only removed chips from all its children’s cafe meals, but it has also replaced them with “healthier” alternatives. It means that youngsters will now have to choose between mashed potatoes, baked potatoes or sweetpotato fries to accompany their fish-fingers, sausages and chicken nuggets. Chips are still available as a side for adults, but they are no longer part of the chain’s £2.75 kids’ meals. And shoppers are unimpressed. “My boy loves chips but wasn’t allowed them with his
fish fingers,” a West Yorkshire shopper in Halifax shopper told The Sun. “It’s a farce because chips are on the adults’ menu. “When I pointed this out, I was told that kids can’t eat chips at Sainsbury’s. They are such killjoys. Who are they to tell me what I can or can’t feed my kids?” A parent at a Sainsbury’s cafe in London added: “Chips are loved by children and should be a treat when eating out. It’s crazy the store is dictating their diets.” Sainsbury’s Cafe children meals cost between £1.30 and £3, and still include lesshealthy options, including pizza… just not chips! Sainsbury’s told The Sun it hadn’t had chips on its children’s menus “for 18 months”.
Evil teenager shatters his 8-month-old baby’s skull AN evil, 18-year-old killer has been jailed for 100 years after battering his eight-month-old baby daughter so badly that her skull was totally shattered. Jayden Straight was, justly, handed the sentence after admitting the July 2018 murder of baby Raija Straight in Des Moines, Iowa. The killer, 17 at the time of the murder, left his baby suffering serious internal injuries, multiple skull fractures, broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and massive retinal haemorrhaging. Straight’s partner, Ri Bambino, left him caring for their tiny daughter on the afternoon she was fatally injured, to run some errands. She returned to find her baby injured, horrifically, with Straight, subsequently, going on the run. The tragic tot’s brutal father admitted murdering her. But after handing himself in the next day, he was unable to provide any explanation for the wounds inflicted on Raija. And he has since failed to provide any motive for his daughter’s death. A doctor, who treated the baby in hospital before she died, said: “The injuries were from a deliberate assault, and
could not be explained as unintentional or accidental.” The Des Moines Register reported that Straight was jailed for 50 years for seconddegree murder. He was handed a further 50-year sentence for three counts of wilful injury and two counts of child endangerment, resulting in serious injury. All six sentences will run consecutively, which means that Straight will not be released from jail before 2119. The tragic infant’s heartbroken great-grandma, Robin Head, paid tribute to Raija, saying: “When I saw this child’s face and what she has brought to me for the eight months of her life, I can’t never explain that feeling of holding her, laughing with her, touching her, walking with her, and crawling with her.”
Hidden pipe sucks in two innocent friends
Flooded area hides dreadful danger from youngsters
TWO youngsters, both 12, have spoken about the bizarre moment they were both sucked through an unseen pipe as they headed home from school. Euan Bottomley and Luke Davies were heading back from Carres Grammar School in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, when the incident happened. As a result of flooding, they could not see where they were putting their feet, and ended up falling into a brook and through a pipe under a track. Before he could even think, Euan said he was sucked under the water and into the pipe before being spat out at the other end. He added: “It sucked me in with a lot of force; so much so that I didn’t have time to hang on. I thought at first I would just get my feet a bit wet, and felt that the water might go up to my knee. But when I fell in, I was fully submerged.” Euan Bottomley, who was sucked into the tunnel first, said: “I don’t remember getting out. I just remember putting my head up, out of the water, about a metre from where I emerged. “The river was so overflowing that we couldn’t actually see the pipe. In fact, it was so overflowing that we didn’t even know the river was there… we couldn’t tell!” Luke spotted his friend’s
PE bag in the water, so he went down to retrieve it, but ended up being sucked into the pipe as well. Euan, who couldn’t see what had happened, noticed his bag coming through the pipe, only to find some resistance. He then realised it was Luke, who had done the same thing as him. He said: “Luke told me he saw my PE bag and thought I was messing about, so I went to get it. He said he got sucked in, though. Both of his legs were pulled, and he couldn’t hold on.” Happily, the pals had no injuries and were able to return home. But Euan said the incident left him realising just how lucky they were. “If I had got stuck, or a branch had been in the way, I could have drowned,” he said. “The shock made me not cry. Normally, I would have cried at that sort of stuff, but I was just so shocked. I was a bit traumatised when I got home, having been underwater. “I thought it would have been
shallow, but in the click of my fingers, I was in the pipe. I couldn’t breathe for five seconds, and Luke told me he swallowed some water when he tried to breathe.” The schoolboy broke down when he told his parents what had happened, after returning home sodden. Euan’s relieved dad Stephen said: “He told me he had been holding his breath for five to six seconds, but it felt like forever. Both lads thought they were going to die.” The concerned father is now calling for the pipe to be blocked, warning: “What if someone does die in the next week or year? How could I live with myself if I didn’t report it? “It needs a gate, or something to make sure no one can get through. It needs a bit of metal to stop people going through, or they could all be dead. “Both kids could have been dead and we wouldn’t have known for hours. You don’t think about looking through a pipe!”

Police shoot dead British gangster outside his hotel
BRITISH gangster Sean Hercules, better known as Shacker, was killed in a shoot-out with police on the Costa del Sol, after pulling out a gun outside his Cancelada hotel, in Estepona. The 39-year-old crook, from Leeds, who had convictions for drugtrafficking and carrying firearms, fired at police as they arrived to arrest him at the Autosole Aparthotel at 5pm on Monday. Hercules, who was imprisoned for nine years but served four for a postoffice robbery, was shot down on the pavement. Another two guns were, reportedly, found in his hotel bedroom. Police had spent two hours searching urgently for the criminal, after he had been seen fleeing a traffic accident,
armed in Puerto Banus earlier that day. Eventually, he was spotted acting suspiciously and followed back to his hotel by a routine patrol. He was declared dead at the scene, but his body was not removed until a judge arrived at 7pm. Hercules previously faced a charge of attempted murder in the UK after leaving a man with more than 250 gunshot pellets in his body. “Officers came under fire when they went to arrest him and were obliged to use their weapons to repel the attack, resulting in death,” said a National Police spokesman. “Two firearms and four cartridges were found next to him.” The incident is currently under investigation. He pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life, as well as possessing a prohibited weapon.
Painful insight over regular mobile calls
A DOCTOR from Torrevieja has revealed the extent of harm that mobile phones can inflict on the human body, especially among the young. Dr Alfonso Cort highlighted studies that show we spend an average of 5½ hours looking at cellphones or computers every day, causing “technological injuries” in children. These injuries include tendinitis of the thumb, carpal tunnel syndrome and epicondylitis (aka tennis elbow) through repetitive movement.
“These have their origin in the repetition of the same movements of our hands and fingers for long periods, which causes an inflammation in the tendons and nerves,” he said. “These injuries begin with tingling in the hands, especially at night, accompanied by muscle pain in the upper limb.” Dr Felipe Garibo, a specialist at Quironsalud Valencia, adds that the position we adopt when using devices also harms us. He recommends less time using devices, raising them to avoid lowering the head, as well as using both thumbs and both hands, and adopting regular exercises to improve muscle strength.
Robbed of seeing grandkids, admit heartbroken pair
SPAIN’S High Court has ordered the Justice Ministry to pay two grandparents €50,000 in damages, for failing to protect their right to see their grandchildren. In 2007, when their son, Jordi, was separating from his wife, Ramón and Margarita went to a Catalonia court to fight their former daughter-in-law for the right to visit their two granddaughters. The court ruled in their favour, and ordered that they be allowed to see the two girls at least once every two weeks. But the mother refused to obey the court order, and, for years, the grandparents were unable to see them. “We once travelled 200km to see them,” said Ramón, who lives with his wife in a small municipality in the north-eastern city of Tarragona. “We knocked on the door, but the daughter-in-law never let us in.” As the years passed, the couple wrote numerous times to the judge in charge of the case to say they were not being allowed to see the children. But nothing was done. Now, in a pioneering sentence, Spain’s High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, has ordered the Justice Ministry to pay Ramón and Margarita €25,000 each, plus interest, in compensation for the judge’s inaction, as well as the lengthy legal process. “The money does not compensate for all that we have lost,” said Ramón. “So many court cases, and we were not able to be with the granddaughters, or see them grow up.” Neither Ramón, or Margarita, have seen their grandchildren for 14 years, and the couple have lost all hope that things will change. One of the girls is now 18, and the other one 16. A bitterly-upset Ramón added: “They have robbed us of a life with our grand-daughters. When we look at each other, we know that we are without them.” “We are both 76 years old and we would like to be with them before we die.”
The children’s mother also stopped the father from seeing the children. And, after their divorce, she reported Jordi for, allegedly, abusing one of their daughters. A judge issued a restraining order against him and began criminal proceedings. But Jordi was acquitted eight years later by Tarragona’s High Court, which described the mother’s complaint as “seriously disturbing”. During that eight-year period, Jordi was unable to see his daughters, and, when a judge finally allowed him to, the girls did not want to see him. Meanwhile, their mother continued to put up obstacles to stop him and the grandparents from visiting the girls. But, sadly, as the girls grew up, they refused to see their father or his parents. “What good does it do now that the justice system has ruled in our favour, if the court order was never met?” asked angry Ramón. He and his wife asked for €200,000 in compensation, initially, for psychological damage over the court’s inaction. But the Justice Ministry agreed to pay just €10,000 to each. Ramón and Margarita appealed the Ministry’s offer at the High Court, which ruled that they each be given €25,000 for the “undue delays of the judge” in enforcing his own sentence. “They have grown up, and we still know nothing about them,” said a bitter Ramón. “The Justice Ministry has been very slow. Years have passed and there has been a lot of suffering. “We would like to be with them before we die. But time has passed and I fear we will die without that pleasure.” As for the compensation, their son said it was far from enough. “We have spent more on lawyers,” he added. But Jordi is, however, hopeful that he will be able to reconnect with his daughters in the future: “After some years have passed, my daughters will be able to think for themselves, without being influenced, and then I will be able to speak with them and tell them everything,” he said.

And, despite the windy conditions, it was another excellent service, again attended by more than 500 people. They included former Service men and women, along with Tenerife’s British Consul. There was a warm welcome for Wingate School Choir, all 50 of them, who were appearing at the service for
the first time. They performed perfect renditions of “Wear Your Poppy Today” and “Let There Be Peace On Earth”. The Service concluded with a beautiful song, “The Call”, sung superbly by Wingate schoolteacher Jordana Burridge, winning the praise and admiration of all. The Royal British Legion thanks all supporters for their attendance, and continued support, in addition to their generous donations. Also, thanks to Westhaven Bay, Wingate School and the organisers and helpers, without whom this annual event would not be possible.

Prickly pears are such a surprise! WHILE prickly pears are new to American cuisine, this ingredient isn’t anything new to Mexico and Central America, where it is a staple food.
The prickly pear (opuntia ficus-indica) grows in hot, arid areas, and, although it’s covered in spikes, it’s completely edible. There are three parts to a prickly pear cactus. Nopales: these are the cactus pads, and are another common name for prickly pear. They can be scrambled into eggs, tossed with pasta, and generally eaten as a vegetable. You might find them a little bit slimy, so preparation is key! Flower petals: like most cacti, the prickly pear blooms each year. The flowers are gorgeous and are edible. They can be used as a garnish to meat dishes, or added to salads for colour. Prickly pear fruit: the pear itself is the fruit of the cacti, and it’s completely edible,
but only after you remove the outer peel, which contains small spines that can cause discomfort. Health benefits In addition to its watermelonlike flavour, the health benefits make this cactus fruit worth eating. They’re a good

source of nutritional values like vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Weight loss Because the prickly pear is high in fibre and low in calories, it makes a great addition to your weightloss plan. The fibre will fill
you up and keep you from overeating, or snacking later on in the day. Consuming a high-fibre diet is a great way to lose some weight, and it’s also a key component in preventing obesity. Disease prevention The prickly pear is rich with
polyphenols, flavonoids and betalains, all of which are antioxidant compounds that work hard to neutralise free radicals. This means your healthy cells are less likely to mutate into cancerous cells, therefore preventing the onset of cancer. The antioxidants can also work hard to prevent heart disease, prevent degeneration in the eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts, and prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s. Immunity booster One serving of prickly pear will get you a third of the way to your daily requirements of vitamin C. This vitamin is a major component to immune health, and producing and stimulating white blood cells. Heart health All that fibre also helps protect your heart. That will lower your risk of high cholesterol, which increases your chances of developing heart disease, which leads to heart attacks and strokes. The potassium in prickly pears also reduces high blood pressure, dilating your blood vessels and reducing the strain on your system.

A bit of butter makes for a healthy coffee!
By Val Sainsbury THE low-carb diet movement has created a demand for high fat, low-carb food and beverage products, including butter coffee. While butter coffee products are extremely popular among low-carb and paleodiet enthusiasts, many wonder whether there’s any truth to their suggested health benefits. What is butter coffee? In its simplest and most traditional form, butter coffee is just plain, brewed coffee, combined with butter. Although many people believe that butter coffee is a modern concoction, this high-fat beverage has been consumed throughout history. Many cultures and communities, including the Sherpas of the Himalayas and the Gurage of Ethiopia, have been drinking butter coffee and butter tea for centuries. Some people living in highaltitude regions add butter to their coffee or tea for muchneeded energy, as living and working in high altitude areas increases their calorie needs. Additionally, people in the Himalayan regions of Nepal and India, as well as certain areas in China, commonly
drink tea made with yak butter. In Tibet, butter tea, or po cha, is a traditional beverage, consumed on a daily basis. Nowadays, especially in developed countries like the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, butter coffee usually refers to coffee that contains butter and coconut or MCT oil. MCT stands for mediumchain triglycerides, a type of fat commonly derived from coconut oil Today, people consume butter coffee for various reasons, such as to enhance weight loss and promote ketosis, a metabolic state in
which the body burns fat as its main energy source. You can prepare butter coffee easily at home. *Coffee: packed with healthpromoting antioxidants like chlorogenic acid, coffee may increase energy, enhance concentration, promote fat burning, and even reduce the risk of certain diseases. *Grass-fed butter: this contains higher amounts of powerful antioxidants, including beta carotene, as well as higher amounts of anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids, than regular butter. *Coconut oil or MCT oil: coconut oil is a healthy fat
that may increase heartprotective HDL (good) cholesterol and reduce inflammation. MCT oil has been shown to promote weight loss and improve cholesterol. One advantage of butter coffee applies to those following the ketogenic diet. Drinking a high-fat beverage like butter coffee may help people on a keto diet reach and maintain ketosis. In fact, research shows that taking MCT oil may help induce nutritional ketosis, and reduce symptoms related to transitioning to the ketogenic diet, also known as the “keto flu”.
Coconut oil and butter are also beneficial for those on ketogenic diets, because consuming high-fat foods is necessary to reach and maintain ketosis. Adding butter, MCT oil, or coconut oil to your coffee will make it more filling, because of the extra calories and ability of fats to make you feel more full. However, some butter coffee beverages can contain over 450 calories per cup. This is fine if your cup of butter coffee is replacing a meal like breakfast, but adding this high calorie brew to your normal breakfast meal can cause weight gain, if the calories aren’t accounted for, during the rest of the day. Apart from being an option for those wanting to reach and maintain ketosis, butter coffee doesn’t offer many health benefits. While the individual components of butter coffee offer various health benefits, no evidence suggests that combining them into one beverage offers benefits beyond those associated with consuming them separately, throughout the day. Although butter coffee enthusiasts may recommend drinking butter coffee in place of a meal, choosing a more nutrient-dense, wellrounded meal is a healthier option, regardless of what dietary pattern you follow.
The dreaded roundabouts in Spain By Emma
from Motorworld
MOST foreign, and even local, drivers in Spain find the prospect of using a roundabout daunting, and, at times, frustrating. So many people seem to have their own “rules”, when it comes to using them! A roundabout is designed to improve the flow of traffic and not to hinder it, but that’s not always the case! Let’s take a look and see
if we can clarify their use. We’re all aware that, when approaching a roundabout, we are obliged to give way to the traffic already on the roundabout. Most accidents on roundabouts occur when exiting, not entering, although there are incidents when we drive into the rear of a vehicle, because we thought/judged that they had entered the roundabout, only to find out BANG they haven’t. In Spain, we drive a left-hand drive car, but our normal driving position on a road should always be as far to the right of the road as possible, and this also applies to a roundabout. If you think of a roundabout as nothing more than a road with curves, it may make your approach less terrifying. We have many clients who have
said they find roundabouts in Tenerife alarming, and that does not help the smooth flow, because drivers are distracted by their fear. We should ALWAYS exit a roundabout from the righthand lane, unless there are signs or signals that indicate otherwise. So, to put this into perspective, let’s consider a normal journey along a reasonably-straight road with two lanes - a dual carriageway, perhaps. We want to turn right at the next junction, so which lane
would you need to be in? That is a no brainer. We would have to be in the inside, right-hand lane, in order to carry out this manoeuvre, safely. I would hope that none of our readers would consider using the outside lane in these circumstances, where you would, potentially, cut across another vehicle, perhaps causing an accident or incident. If the road were the same, but with various curves, the same rule would apply. So, if you
apply the above rules to a roundabout, then you would be in the right-hand lane, in order to safely and correctly exit the roundabout. According to the DGT, when asked “Can I exit a roundabout from the inside lane?”, the answer is a firm “No”. If an accident occurs, the DGT will blame the person not using the roundabout correctly, i.e. if a car on the inside lane cuts across a car in the right-hand lane, who has not yet exited the roundabout. Confused? We don’t blame you at all. But if you try to consider a roundabout as a straightish road with curves, where there are junctions on the right hand side you may wish to use, and apply the same logic to a roundabout, you should remain safe and accident-free, and on the right side of the law!

Music and massage are the best treatment for dementia N O N - DRUG treatments, such as massage and music therapy, are as effective as antipsychotic drugs in treating dementia symptoms, a review of the medical evidence has found.
A recent report said there was a “significant over-reliance” on chemical restraints, such as antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. It described the use of drugs to sedate and control elderly residents as “inhumane, abusive and unjustified”, and more should be done to stop the drugging of elderly people in care homes. High rates of antipsychotic prescribing in elderly care have been known about for many years. An Australian study, conducted last year, found one-in-five care residents were being given antipsychotics, every day. These medications are commonly used to manage the behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, like agitation and aggression. Yet evidence also suggests antipsychotics are only modestly effective in managing dementia-related symptoms, and there can be significant side effects. These drugs increase someone’s risk of falls
and fractures, cognitive impairment and death. So there’s been considerable interest in reducing the use of antipsychotics, and replacing them with non-medical treatments. A recent review of scientific studies on this topic, published by a Canadian team in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, has found that some non-drug treatments for aggression and agitation in dementia were at least as effective, and, sometimes, more effective, than typical drug treatments.
“We found that massage therapy, or massage therapy combined with music therapy, and multidisciplinary care, were some of the most effective interventions,” said Dr Jennifer Watt, the study’s lead author, and a geriatrician at St Michael’s Hospital, Toronto. Massage therapy can be as simple as a five-minute hand massage, while music therapy involves playing music the person enjoys, or may have enjoyed as a child. Multidisciplinary care means the involvement of
different professionals, like social workers and nurses, to anticipate and meet a patient’s needs. What about the cost? An objection to these nondrug treatments is cost that implementing the staff needed to deliver these sorts of therapies would be too expensive. The Canadian review didn’t look at how cost-effective their treatments are. They plan to do that next. But Dr Watt said some interventions were less time-consuming and costly than you might
expect. “For example, in my practice as a geriatrician, it would be that music therapy intervention could be something as simple as getting a resident their own iPod with headphones, and having family members choose music genres that they know their loved one enjoyed, before they developed such severe dementia,” she said. “Similarly, massage therapy could be something as easy as a simple hand massage for five minutes, or hand-holding. And, again, that can be very comforting.” How could change occur? Between 2013 and 2017, the rate of antipsychotic prescriptions to people over the age of 65 dropped by 6%, which may have come about because of changes to the way certain drugs can be prescribed, and awareness campaigns about the possible harms of antipsychotics. In one Australian study, researchers fed back information to the aged care facilities themselves, on how many antipsychotics residents were taking, That study, trialling multiple measures to reduce antipsychotic prescription in aged care, saw significant reductions over a two-year period. Rates of antipsychotic prescribing dropped by 13%, while benzodiazepine prescription (Valium-like drugs) dropped by 21%.
Is this farewell to the dreaded smear tests? STUDIES have recently found that a simple DIY urine test, or swab, from a new vaginal swab kit, could put an end to the dreaded smear test, thanks to its “game-changing” advance.
The tests, developed by experts at Queen Mary University of London, look for chemical changes in DNA, prompted by disease, and the results have been startling. Of the 600 patients tested, “pre-cancer” signs were identified with more than 80% accuracy, which is similar to existing methods. This simple urine test, or swab, will allow women to test themselves for cervical cancer in the privacy and
comfort of their own home, and it could replace the current procedure because those women would send off
the swabs or urine samples for laboratory analysis. Cancer-screening rates have plunged to a 21-year low,
with just seven in 10 women attending appointments. Many women ignore invitation letters, because they find smear tests painful or embarrassing. The test will also benefit those who might prefer a home test because it saves time. It makes the recent findings crucial, with hope that the DIY kit will encourage more women to check for cervical cancer. Dr Belinda Nedjai, who led the research, added: “Over50s in particular can avoid smear tests, because they can be more painful at this age, so a non-invasive test is needed to improve attendance. “We hope urine tests and swabs, done at home and posted away, could eventually be part of the national screening programme. It is a good
solution to offer to people who have received several invitations and not turned up.” The study recruited 600 patients at the Royal London Hospital, who’d had an abnormal smear test or were HPV-positive, and asked them to test themselves. The urine test detected pre-cancer, accurately, in 83% of women. And one of the four different swabs trialled was 88% accurate. The results give women a risk score, so doctors know whether to give them further examinations. The British scientists behind the tests hope they will become routine within three to five years. More than 3,000 women a year are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and more than 850 die from the disease.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE headed to Girona last weekend, off the back of three draws, and looking for an elusive win. Girona, however, were hoping to build on a couple of good recent results to move up the table. Neither team took charge at the start, although Girona tried to force something through main playmaker Borja García. They also had the pace of Gallar and Jairo on the wings, with lone striker Stuani up front to pick up crosses and hold play. In fact, this was the route that led to their first chance after only six minutes, when García hit a fierce shot against the post. This attack was a wake-up call for Tenerife, who decided to join in and not be shy going forward! In the 16th minute, after several consecutive corners, Luis Milla also had a shot, which hit the post after the ball was deflected by Stuani’s leg. Tenerife were able to gain more possession, much to the annoyance of the home fans and Girona players, who were impatient to please. When Pep Lluís Martí’s men squeezed the throttle, they had a couple of quick chances, Stuani meeting a Mojica cross, but heading wide, and Jairo sending another shot against the woodwork after drawing out Tenerife’s Shaq Moore to the left wing. Just before half-time, a moment of stupidity left Tenerife one man down, when Aitor Sanz brought down Stuani as he headed towards Ortolá’s goal. The referee had no choice
10-man Tenerife are punished by Girona Girona 1 CD Tenerife 0
but to show Sanz a red card because he was the last man, which would make Garai’s half-time talk interesting because CDT had to play the whole second half with 10 men. After the break, Tenerife had no choice but to defend in numbers as Girona came forward, relentlessly, trying to take advantage of the extra player, and locking CDT in their own half. Tenerife defended the best they could, and were doing well until Sipcic brought down Samu Saiz in the area, giving Girona a penalty in the 63rd minute.

Around 270 players, aged eight and upwards, are expected to compete, from Tenerife South and North, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The official start is at 11am, but the first kick-offs will probably begin an hour earlier. That’s because many more players than last year’s 140 total are expected to descend on the ground. A word of warning: everyone must enter the ground, vía reception, because the lower access will not be open.
Stuani stepped up for Girona to take the spot-kick, eager to bury the ghost of missing one in their last match, against Alcorcón. This time he didn’t miss. Ortolá guessed correctly, but the power of the shot meant it was 1-0 to Girona.
The rest of game was pretty much the same, Girona pressing and Tenerife defending. Stuani had the ball in the Tenerife goal a second time, but it was ruled offside, and the final whistle signified another bad result for the blanquiazul. Tenerife are now 18th in the
table with three draws and two defeats in their last five games, level with Oviedo on 14 points. They face league leaders Cadiz at home on Sunday. They are nine points clear at the top of the table and flying… fear the worst!

Southgate drops angry Sterling, after bust-up LIVERPOOL defender Joe Gomez, whose side beat deadly rivals Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield on Sunday, trained at St George’s Park on Monday morning, sporting a scratch below his right eye. It was caused, apparently, from his on-pitch bust-up with City’s Raheem Sterling the previous day. But Sterling also trained that morning, despite England manager Gareth Southgate making him “unavailable” for last night’s game (Thursday) with Montenegro. Both sides have played down the physical side of the row and they have made peace, with Gomez understood to have urged Southgate not to send Sterling home. Sterling and Gomez, involved in a heated exchange towards the end of the
Premier League game, embraced after the full-time whistle.
But emotions were still running high when the duo joined up for England duty at St George’s Park on Monday, Sterling reacting badly as Gomez offered a handshake from behind, leading to another verbal altercation. Sterling attempted to play down the row as though the situation had been defused. And some England stars stepped in to separate the duo after realising the incident was not friendly banter, as first thought. But Sterling wrote on his Instagram account: “First and foremost, everyone knows what that game means to me! Everyone knows that I am not that way inclined, and, more to the point, both Joe and I have had words and figured things out, and moved on.”

Playgirls; naughty but nice! THE first round of the Canarian Weekly Handicap was, as usual, an excellent night for most players.
Ourplace Playgirls, away to Naughty Nautas, were closely handicapped. There were some extremely tight games, but with their success at the final’s night boosting confidence, the Playgirls secured a 5-2 scoreline. Sandys Bandits hosted the Waterfall for another closely-matched handicap. But again, the visitors did the business, running out 5-2 winners. Mad Hatters, at home to Pas O Nadas A, lost 5-2, and, according to John: “It was a brilliant night with a 180, great darts and great company. And if we were going to get beaten, we couldn’t have lost to a better crowd of guys.” Harvey and Wayne, with maximums, and Singles champ Janice, with another fine performance, were in superb form. There was also an Ourplace derby, with the Breakaways facing the Playboys, and Breakaways really went to town with a 7-0 win. Even Alex’s 180 couldn’t save the Playboys, and the result was obviously down to home advantage! Club Activo were given a 140 start from visiting Sandys Bookie boys, and it came down to the very last double to decide it, the Bookie boys claiming it for a 4-3 win. Excellent handicapping, Chas! By the way, apologies to Graham for my comment about his MC efforts last week. He is a very good MC, but I believe his quotes are even better. The Emerald Lounge had a tough one, with Pas O Nadas International, visiting, but they made full use of their handicap and ran out 6-1 winners. Loch Inn Bullseyes, perhaps rejuvenated in their new home, gave visiting Scooters & Chevy’s B, a warm welcome, and a 140 start. But their generosity stopped there, and they won 5-2. Emerald B travelled to Suters Bar, AKA “The love shack”, and although the 20;30 Crew proved too
good, winning 5-2, there were some close games, and Jackie F played a blinder. It was like David and Goliath, but with darts instead of a slingshot. And, having scored brilliantly, Jackie just failed to take out 148, before finishing off the remaining 24 points with her next throw. Outstanding stuff! Jackie H was the other Emerald winner, and it looks as though a team of Jackies are needed for them! Sam hit a 180, on what turned out to be a good, fun evening. Pink Elephant had The Pub’s visit to contend with, and they raced into a 4-0 lead. Match won! But Grizzly wasn’t taking it lying down, and fought back to prevent the whitewash. Sadly, that’s as far as the resistance went and it ended 6-1. Both Lynn and Chris hit 180s, while Grizzly had a 111 check-out. Pas O Nadas received a visit from Picasso’s, and the handicapping left just 20 points between them. It finished 4-3 to the visitors, which was pretty good handicapping again. I appreciate that some will be unhappy with the handicapping, but please spare a thought for the guys sorting this out. They do it for free, and it isn’t easy. If it were, then loads more horse races would be dead-heats … and I might even win a game of golf one day! By the way, The Club House were awarded their match with Palms Sports, as per rules.

I know 180s don’t count, but they still deserved a mention. Incidentally, thanks go to Jackie H, for organising the event. It was her first attempt, and she performed brilliantly.
