Garai’s ultimatum: beat leaders or go!

22nd November - 28th November 2019

Continued from Front

The Basque coach had been given an ultimatum: beat the Andalusians to avoid being dismissed. Garai’s men performed well to earn a draw against the Segunda Division’s runaway leaders. But the fact that Tenerife were in the relegation places was not good enough for the board. They met, urgently, at the Heliodoro facilities, headed by Miguel Concepción, and directors agreed, unanimously, that there was no going back. The poor results, with eight consecutive games without a win, and no home win since 25th August, ultimately sealed his fate, and an official announcement was made at 11pm. As well as Garai, his staff members, Raymond HenricColl and Cristian Bustos, are also leaving, although Víctor Moreno, main supporter of the Basque coach, remains, but in a different role. Moreno announced that Sesé Rivero would be taking

over on an interim basis, until the club finds a new coach, but the Board won’t rush into appointing just anyone. With little time to make a big impact before tonight’s (Friday) game against Sporting de Gijón, Rivero and the rest of his coaching staff have a tough job on their hands. The new blue-and-white coach has been taking training sessions this week, laying down how he wants his squad to play against Sporting. Club captain Aitor Sanz said at a press conference after training: “López Garai’s influence will remain in force at the moment, but we will try to adapt to the modifications proposed by Rivero. “Each coach has his ideas, but this squad is made with Garai’s ideas right now, and the players have to adapt.” Ultimately, time is still on CD Tenerife’s side because there is still a long way to go this season, as long as they don’t slip further down and lose ground on the others… then again, this could be déjà vu!

End of the line for sorry Garai

Homeless man is paid €5, to be punched in the face! THE victim of a seemingly nasty video in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, which has gone viral across social media, received just five euros for allowing a man to punch him in the face.

The police have been looking, since last weekend, for the person responsible for the punch, as well as the victim, after the post was made public. Guardia Civil officers posted a request on their Twitter

A LIST of the 10 mostpopular package holiday hotspots for families this summer has been revealed, with Tenerife placed on top for the second year running, according to TravelSupermarket. A fall in demand meant that prices fell by up to 38%, with British holiday-makers counting the pennies and shunning expensive destinations, for countries where they can squeeze as much value from their sterling, according to new data. The largest Canary Island was a firm favourite, thanks to its pretty beaches, almost guaranteed sunshine and affordable family accommodation. And it comes as the price of package holidays dived this year, thanks to delays in booking trips.

account for internet users to come forward if they had any information regarding the post, because they considered it disturbing. The images show that a man,

looking at the camera while smiling at the person holding the phone, was punched in the face, shockingly. He struck his head on a concrete bench as he went

down, and the authorities believe that the incident went viral, probably because of the recording’s brutal nature. The injured man, Pedro, unearthed by local Canarian radio/television station RTVC, told the full story to a TV reporter, who soon found the 34-year-old homeless man. He is well known in the area because he sleeps rough, frequently, around the plaza de Santo Domingo, in the historical town of Las Palmas. Pedro told the reporter he was offered five euros in exchange for a smack in the face, about a month ago. But it came to light last weekend, only because another person

Tenerife tops for package holidays It is hardly surprising that Brits are trying to save money wherever possible, because of the huge fall in the pound against the euro, especially with Brexit again looming large. And it’s actually half a century since the pound was worth less than the US $1.24 available last week. Emma Coulthurst, from the comparison website, said: “There have been price drops on package holidays of as much as 38% this year, compared with those charged last summer. “Brexit has raised concerns and seen people delay booking. As a result, demand has dropped and prices have followed.” Turkey, Majorca and the

Algarve also rank highly with holiday-makers who receive bang for their buck, with a huge number of resorts for families with a variety of budgets. To ascertain the most popular package holidays, TravelSupermarket compared searches made by British holiday-makers for hundreds of thousands of holidays across more than 25 package-holiday providers. The searches were made on the site between 1st January 2019 to 18th July 2019, for holidays departing between 1st May 2019 and 30th September 2019, compared with the same dates last year. It found that Spain was a clear favourite, because the

Costa Dorada saw the biggest increase in interest, rising from 16th place last year to eighth this summer. Nearby Portugal was also of interest, the sunny Algarve jumping from fourth place last summer to third place this year. Turkish resorts in the area of Antalya, including Kalkan, Lara and Alanya, rose from seventh place last year to fourth place, and that is unsurprising, given the strength of the lira against the pound. Emma added: “Britons get a lot of lira in Turkey, and it offers some of the largest range and best value, all-inclusive holidays on the market. “With currency volatility with the euro on the minds of Brits,

The video ended with Pedro on the floor, which sparked public concern about what had happened to him, especially after the hard thump on the head he received when falling down. But Pedro told the RTVC reporter that he was knocked unconscious, and simply couldn’t recall a thing when he woke up. He certainly won’t be reporting the person who recorded the incident, because, he said: “After all, I did give my consent!”

choosing to holiday in these countries enables you to avoid that and not spend a fortune.” But the Brits are shunning more expensive locations, including Menorca, Ibiza, Dubai and Orlando. In fact, the Spanish destinations of Ibiza and Menorca featured in the top 20 most expensive holiday destinations for a package holiday from the UK this summer, according to TravelSupermarket pricing research, highlighting why they were less popular. This is Money, with data from TravelSupermarket, can reveal that the top 10 most-popular package holiday destinations for families this summer were: 1. Tenerife 2. Majorca 3. Algarve 4. South Airport committee pleads for more security

MEMBERS of Tenerife South’s airport committee are requesting more security there, following a number of incidents in the busy area during the past few weeks. The last incident to be reported was an attack on an airport worker by a homeless man, who was known to have spent the night in the airport vicinity.

But when approached by the airport man, he attacked him with a broken glass bottle, causing several injuries to the man’s legs. This was not the first incident involving airport workers, specifically around the entrance to the building, where thousands of people pass through the doors daily, throughout the year. The committee have pointed out that the airport is the gateway for tourism, as well as an economic hub for the island, and that safety should be ensured at all times.

The situation needs to be made public for all to hear, specifically the airport chief and the state security bodies, as well as the town halls, in an attempt to increase airport security, inside the premises and the surrounding areas. At the moment, say airport committee members, the workers are feeling insecure in their surroundings. In addition, the lack of airport staff at the airport has produced a noticeable drop in security, along with a decrease of airport services in general.

Police probe into suspect building

ADEJE’S Local Police officers have visited a building several times in the touristic area of Avenida Rafael Puig Llivina, at the Centro Comercial Pueblo Canario shopping centre, in Las Americas. They have paid many visits to cordon it off, because the structural work is being carried out without the relevant paperwork or permits. Sources say the owner of the building is installing a type of terrace at road level, the structure being made with metal posts, supported

by various tons of sand containers. But, say other sources, the Local Police believe that this type of project lacks planning, along with specific licences, from Adeje Council. The police estimate that the work being carried out is excessive in weight, bearing in mind that the building surrounding it is 35 years old. Also, underneath the new installations are other establishments. The officers, having frequented the area several times to cordon off the building, claim that, on other occasions, the tape had either been broken or removed. Police are now investigating whether the people working on the new project are legal.

Spanish licences are to be extended for UK nationals until the end of January ‘20

SPECIAL measures, put in place by the Spanish Department of Transport, for UK nationals to exchange their driving licences, have been extended to 31st January. British expats who have been legal residents for two years in Spain must exchange their UK licence for a Spanish one. Under current measures, the procedure is straightforward and costs just €27.70. However, if there is a nodeal Brexit, the Spanish Government says UK licences held by legal British residents will be recognised for nine months only.

To exchange your licence, you must apply before 31st January, to ensure you have a Spanish one before the end of the grace period. According to the British Embassy, Brits living here, with an expired licence, should apply for a “renovación”. If a UK licence is lost, the applicant should ask for a “sustitución”. British expats can begin the application process as long as they have a NIE, and a green residency card is not necessary. Appointments can be made at your local Jefatura Provincial de Trabajo. For any questions, applicants may contact the British Embassy in Madrid, via their Facebook page.

Hero Guardia officer rescues NEWS IN BRIEF pregnant woman from blaze Landslide closes busy road GUARDIA Civil officers in Yaiza, Lanzarote, were on stand-by last Monday morning for a fire emergency, close to their headquarters.

AFTER last weekend’s bad weather, a landslide occurred on the TF-333 last Monday evening, causing the busy road inside the Orotava municipality to be closed, temporarily, the following day. It was a safety precaution, specifically because its retaining wall, which usually prevents rubble sliding on to the road, was knocked over because of the force. Tomás Félix García, Orotava’s Insular Roads Director, said the damage was spread across some 300 metres, from the Colegio Pureza de María to the entrance of El Monasterio restaurant. During the road maintenance, temporary traffic lights will be installed around the vicinity, directing the traffic to an alternative route.

González dies in prison

IGNACIO González, the businessman sentenced to five years in prison for embezzlement and prevarication in the Las Teresitas case, died last Monday in the Tenerife II prison. González was locked up in April to begin his fiveyear sentence, along with Antonio Plasencia, one-time Santa Cruz Mayor and CC senator, and Miguel Parejo, former urban-planning manager of the Tenerife capital.

The blaze broke out at an apartment block, from which four people were rescued, including a pregnant woman. The incident occurred at 8am, and when the Guardia officers were notified about a fire in a nearby apartment block, they were at the scene immediately. Upon arrival, they saw several individuals standing outside the building, trying to avoid the smoke building up inside the block. The emergency services were notified, and fire-fighters, along with the ambulance services, were sent to the building. While the emergency teams began attending to injured parties, a Guardia Civil officer was asked by one of the neighbours if he would help rescue a pregnant woman from her first-floor apartment. The neighbour was extremely concerned, because the expectant woman was nowhere to be seen, in all in the commotion. The officer raced into the building, and, once on the first floor, he found a fireextinguisher hanging on the wall in the hallway. He then

THE National Police have conducted a huge two-year raid, to dismantle an IPTV reseller television system, worth a reported €1m.

Giant ship’s rapid repairs

They are hoping that this raid on an illegal TV provider has put a dent in the supply chain, which re-sold its services to multiple IPTV services. That’s according to TorrentFreak, a publication dedicated to bringing the latest news about copyright, privacy, and everything related to file-sharing. Police have arrested 12 people, four charged with managing access to content, attracting customers, and collecting cash through various platforms, from selling captured broadcast singles. The other eight people were detained for selling the service. The arrests happened in Tenerife, Madrid, Toledo,

to receive treatment for smoke inhalation, but he was soon given the all-clear. Three other people rescued from the building were also treated by the emergency medical team. Thankfully, the four people, including the pregnant lady and three pets, did not suffer serious symptoms. The area was cordoned off, and parked vehicles were removed from the vicinity as a safety precaution, Fortunately, the damage to the building was superficial, with no structural problems.

Adeje banks on tap water

ADEJE Council is encouraging people to stop buying water in plastic bottles because the area’s tap water, tested weekly, is 100% fit for drinking and cooking. used the extinguisher on the walls and in the hallway in an attempt to make it “safer”, enabling him to rescue the mum-to-be. However, the brave officer who rescued her had to be taken to a medical centre

Alicante, Murcia, Gran Canaria and other locations. But the biggest success for the police was finding 15 harddrives and 10 computers, likely to contain the names and information of everyone the IPTV owners worked with. This news comes after Police in Italy, the Netherlands, France, and Bulgaria raided multiple locations in an attempt to shut down what they believe is the back end of many illegal IPTV services. Xtream-codes.com is, reportedly, the company behind the software systems that run many IPTV services, and it was reported that as

many as 50 million people used a service run by XtreamCodes. The company offered an “all-in-one” solution to operate an IPTV service. But, say police, they now have control of the system and have, reportedly, cut off 5,000 clients, servicing over 50 million customers around the world. Exactly what IPTV services used Xtream-Codes is unknown, as is the data which police uncovered. But it is more than likely that they now know the names and locations of many of the 5,000 clients selling the IPTV services.

Court of Appeal deny Man shot and hurt fake sick couple, who while driving along lost withdrawal claim

THE Jet2holidays company has won a “landmark” court appeal, allowing it to issue contempt-ofcourt proceedings against holidaymakers who withdrew dubious claims of being sick, while on holiday.

The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the tour operator, which will now press ahead with legal action against a Nottingham couple, who pulled out of their sickness claim before formal legal proceedings had been launched. Karl and Laura Hughes had brought a gastric-illness claim against Jet2holidays, which was withdrawn after they were then shown social media posts and GoPro footage of a snorkelling trip, during their Lanzarote holiday in 2016, where they said they had been taken ill. The couple alleged that they had contracted foodpoisoning as a result of eating contaminated food, and they served witness statements, verified by a statement of truth, detailing the extent of their illness in April 2017. Jet2holidays said: “The ruling paves the way for companies to take action against dishonest claimants, even if they do not actually submit legal proceedings.” In 2017, Travel Weekly launched its Fight Fake Claims campaign, bringing together tour operators in a stand against false and exaggerated claims of illness while on holiday. That was in response to a

500% rise in holiday sickness claims, according to Abta, which firms put down to a surge in dubious claims. The Court of Appeal’s decision confirms that the High Court has jurisdiction to commit for contempt of court, when false statements verified by a statement of truth had been submitted by a potential claimant, even though no formal claim for damages was ever issued. Jet2holidays says this ruling not just affects the fight against false holiday-sickness claims, but the insurance industry as a whole. High Court judge Judge Owen QC, originally ruled that the High Court had no jurisdiction to deal with the committal proceedings. But Jet2holidays appealed that decision, and the Court of Appeal held, unanimously, that the High Court did have jurisdiction to commit for contempt of Court. And it was sufficient that statements had been served in the pre-action protocol phase. The Master of the Rolls, Sir Terence Etherton, Lord Justice Hamblin, and Lord Justice Flaux, heard the appeal and summed up as follows: “A dishonest witness statement, served in purported compliance with a PAP (Pre

Action Protocol), is capable of interfering with the due administration of justice, for the purposes of engaging the jurisdiction to commit for contempt, because PAPs are now an integral and highlyimportant part of litigation architecture… we consider, contrary to the view of Judge Owen, that there was a close connection between the original witness statements made by the respondents, and the administration of justice, and that, if those witness statements were false, as appears strongly to be the case, they interfered with the administration of justice.” Jet2holidays was also awarded costs of its appeal. Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2holidays, said: “Jet2holidays continues to lead the way in the fight against fake sickness claims, and this landmark decision shows that the courts take this issue very seriously. “The decision by the Court of Appeal to allow us to progress with contempt proceedings against Mr and Mrs Hughes, despite no legal proceedings being issued, has wide-reaching implications, not only for tour operators dealing with false sickness claims, but the insurance industry in general.

In fact, he had been shot at while driving along, and had lost control of his vehicle, which is why it left the road. The emergency services were alerted at around 9.20am, inside the Fuencaliente municipality. Emergency teams were soon sent to the scene to attend to the accident, and

medics took charge of the driver, discovering that he was suffering from severe bruising. But it soon became apparent that he had been shot at, while driving along, and that it caused him to drive off the road, leaving him in a critical position. The medical team stabilised the victim, before transferring him in a specialised, medically-equipped ambulance, to a nearby hospital, where he needed more extensive treatment. The Guardia Civil were also at the scene to carry out the relevant proceedings.

Thieving house-breakers steal €12,000 of jewellery

GUARDIA Civil officers, based in Tacaronte, have arrested and charged two youngsters, aged 19 and 21, with forced entry and robbery, after were said to have stolen jewellery worth around €12,000. Both suspects are Tacoronte residents, alleged to have forced their way into the property and helped themselves to various items of jewellery. The Guardia officers were notified, and an investigation began almost immediately. The officers made enquiries at a local store, which buys and sells jewellery, and, after some persistence, they recovered the majority of the stolen items, later returned to the rightful owner. Both youngsters are now waiting to be presented before the La Laguna courts.

Flight-passenger pest arrested by Guardia

Baggy-clothed shoplifter hiding a huge leg of ham U N D E R C O V E R Guardia Civil officers caught a woman stealing a huge leg of jamón (ham) from a supermarket in the Valencia town of Calpe. She was wearing baggy clothing to hide the cured pig’s leg, which can weigh up to 8kg and measure almost 90cm.

She had embarked on a “Christmas campaign” with three companions, stealing chocolates, perfume, makeup kits, turrónes and cockles, worth a total in excess of €500, from the supermarket. Initially, plain-clothes police noticed a man sitting in a car outside a supermarket on Avenida Juan Carlos I, while three women approached and deposited the shop items in the boot. After unloading their haul, the women went back to

various other supermarkets, to appropriate more Christmas goodies, allegedly. But after the third trip, Guardia Civil arrested all four suspects and, while searching the car boot, they were surprised to find “a very large” leg of ham in the car. It is understood that the items would have been resold on the black market. The four suspects, aged 49, 45, 36 and 32, have been released, pending trial, on charges of continued theft crimes.

A PASSENGER on board an Iberia flight, from Madrid to Lanzarote, who persisted in threatening and insulting other passengers and the cabin crew, was, finally, arrested by the Guardia Civil. The 47-year-old man, who has a police record, was detained when the plane landed in Lanzarote, after 2½ hours, angry passengers describing the journey as “the flight from hell”. On arrival, Guardia officers were at the airport, as requested by the pilot, and an off-duty National Police officer, who had been on board. The aggressive man was charged with not complying with airsafety regulations.

Ryanair hand-luggage fee is Man’s Christmas ‘abusive’, rules Spain court Lotto discovery

just the ticket

A SPANISH court has ruled that Ryanair’s policy of charging extra fees for handluggage is “abusive”, and can no longer be levied in Spain.

The ruling follows a passenger’s complaint over the policy, introduced last year, which charges most people an additional fee for bringing anything more than one personal item into the cabin. The Irish airline allows only small bags into the cabin, if they can be stowed under the seat in front. Larger bags of up to 10kg require a luggage fee, or a fee-paying, priority-boarding pass. But the airline said in a statement: “This ruling will not affect Ryanair’s baggage policy, either in the past or in the future, as it is an isolated case that misinterpreted our commercial freedom to determine the size of our cabin baggage.” The passenger, travelling from Madrid to Brussels, went to court after staff forced her to pay €20 to bring her 10kg luggage on board. The court ordered Ryanair to

refund her fully, with interest, but it rejected her demand for a further €10 compensation for the suffering she experienced, according to court documents. The judge ruled that the hand-luggage, by size and weight, could be carried easily in the cabin, pointing to a Spanish regulation that allows passengers to take hand-luggage on board at no additional cost. The judge characterised the charge as abusive, adding: “It curtails the rights that the passenger has recognised by law,” and declared it invalid in Spain. She rejected the demand for compensation, however, saying: “Doubtless, the passenger suffered rage and powerlessness in having to pay the extra, unforeseen

cost at the time of boarding.” But she added that the discomfort did not reach a level that would justify compensation. The court also said in a statement that its ruling could not be appealed. But Ryanair, when asked whether it would ignore the Spanish ruling, or appeal it in the European Court of Justice, declined to comment. In February, Italy’s anti-trust authority fined Ryanair €3m, and Hungary’s Wizzair €1m, over their cabin baggage policy, on the grounds that it was tantamount to raising ticket prices in a “nontransparent” manner. But last month, an Italian court cancelled the fines, following an appeal by the two airlines.

A MAN came across a file last week which appeared to have been thrown to the side of a Santa Cruz street. But when he looked inside, he discovered 352 Christmas lotto tickets, valued at €7,040, But the honest citizen didn’t hesitate to report his find to the Local Police. They played their part by performing the amazing task of finding the rightful owner,

and, once they established that the tickets belonged to the man, they were handed back to him. Both men posed with the Deputy Inspector, who claimed that the case wasn’t easy to crack. But he also said that all the hard work by police, tracking down the owner, was definitely worth it. He also said it was a grand gesture by the man who found the tickets, restoring faith in the Canarian people, as well as restoring his faith in human nature.

Work on main ring-road will take some four years

Bus accident sparks a heavy traffic jam AN accident was reported in La Orotava at 7.15am on Wednesday, involving a TITSA bus.

It happened at la Calle Miguel de Cervantes during the rush-hour, causing large traffic jams, so much so that the Local Police and the Fire

Brigade were requested. The police were asked to assist with the traffic jam, while fire-fighters removed the bus. Only a few days ago, there was another accident reported in the same area, involving a heavy-goods vehicle. Fortunately, no casualties were reported on this occasion.

Wrestler breaks a ref’s jaw, quite by accident A REFEREE suffered a broken jaw after being kicked in the face in a horrific accident during a wrestling bout. Angel Melian was left dazed, on the ground, after a brutal right foot to his chin. Footage of the dramatic incident showed Angel being floored after closing in on the opponents to get a better look at them grappling. As he stepped away, he realised that one of the wrestlers was about to try to lift his rival and dump him on the sandpit. The sound of the impact could be heard, clearly, over the noise of the crowd watching the bout, and Angel’s glasses flew off his face before he toppled over, as members of the public gasped in horror. Rodriguez who accidentally hit the ref, and his opponent, rushed over to help him, along with other sportsmen, before the ref was rushed to hospital and an assistant took over. The incident happened at an arena in Tenerife’s Santa Ursula, during a series of Canarian Wrestling bouts between the island’s division 1 sides Tijarafe Guanche and Tenerife Shipyards Ravelo. A journalist covering the event tweeted afterwards: “The footage is brutal. I’ve

spoken to Angel and he’s devastated. He’s got a broken jaw and he’s in a lot of pain. “He told me the outcome could have been a lot worse if he had been hit elsewhere. He’s on painkillers and waiting for the surgeon to have a look at him, to decide when to operate.” Insurance worker Angel, who lives in Santa Cruz, said in a social-media message: “Everyone’s seen it and I’m having a bad time of it. It was just bad luck. A freak accident, but thanks for all your support.” Canarian Wrestling, Lucha Canaria in Spanish, is the most popular, traditional, local sport in the Canary Islands. Wrestlers start in the middle of a sand circle called a terrero. The aim is to make the opponent touch the sand with any part of his body except his feet, by throwing them off balance. Two falls are required to win a bout.

Canarian President Ángel Víctor Torres (centre), flanked by Tenerife Cabildo President Pedro Martin (left) and Economy Minister Carolina Darias

CANARIAN President Ángel Víctor Torres delivered some important, long-awaited news on Wednesday, which will please hundreds of Tenerife motorists. He announced, at long last, that work would begin on Monday to complete the main ring-road, starting at Santiago del Teide. He added that this particular initiative was in its final stages, and would continue to be a

work in progress, over a fouryear period. There will be two links, one in El Tanque and the other in Santiago del Teide, as well as a roundabout on the southern edge of Erjos, connecting with Masca. The work will produce one viaduct, five man-made tunnels, four underpasses, two overpasses and a pedestrian walkway. And, in total, 28 drainage works will be carried out. The budget for the whole scheme is the largest-ever public investment across the whole of Spain, adding up to €240.4. As for the 11.3km

road, including a tunnel in Erjos (5.1km), that will take an estimated four years to complete. The work, forecast to end in 2023, will reduce the travel time between El Tanque and Santiago del Teide to around 10 minutes, against the present 25 minutes on the TF-82. The Erjos tunnel construction will take around four months to complete. The drilling will start from both ends of the tunnel, and there will be nonstop work around the clock, from Monday to Sunday, with three working shifts over 24 hours.

Dream holiday ends in man’s tragedy at home A DREAM holiday in Benidorm ended in tragedy for Luke Brown, who possibly died after contracting meningitis on his return home.

The popular 23-year-old, from Upton, Merseyside, had been fit and healthy. But he fell victim to a dangerous strain of the “silent killer” disease and passed away a week later. Luke was rushed to hospital in Arrowe Park Hospital in the Wirral in September after his shocked parents, Viv and Del, discovered him having seizures in bed. He was placed into an induced coma. His last text to his devoted dad read: “Can you bring me up a can of Tango when you’re sorted?” The evening before being taken to hospital, Luke had complained of having a headache and asked for a bath to be run for him. His parents kept a vigil by his bedside in hospital during the following week, but they believed he died at home, effectively. They were forced

It spelled the official opening of the 34th world’s largest trans-ocean rally, which is always a favourite with ARC participants, as they follow proudly, behind a lively carnival-like procession around the marina, representing their countries with national flags. This year’s event is particularly special because the High Commissioner for Saint Lucia in London, H.E. Guy Mayers, along with a large group of Saint Lucians wearing colourful national dress, joined Spain’s principal flagbearers, Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands, to lead hundreds of ARC crews around Las Palmas Marina. The High Commissioner wished them well on the voyage, telling the sailors: “When you come to Saint Lucia, you will understand what unique hospitality is all about. I want to thank all of you who have chosen to be part of this. “We welcome you with open arms and will continue to grow the ARC together, so we wish you well across the ocean.” As it’s a special year, the High Commissioner has brought together a group of Saint Lucians from London, to witness what makes the ARC such a defining experience for cruising. They will share the excitement

of spending three weeks at sea to reach Saint Lucia’s shores. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the event’s arrival in the tropical Caribbean island of Saint Lucia and the 40th anniversary of the country’s independence, the occasion being marked in a number of ways for this year’s rally. With a spectacular, colourful carnival parade around the entire Las Palmas marina, crews from 35 nations waved their national flags, patriotically, and got into the spirit of the event. For many, this will be their longest ocean passage, while for others, it remains a regular trip across the pond. But for everyone, it has been the culmination of hard work and preparation in the buildup to this great adventure. An international conga line was led by the Banda Gran Canaria, with the Batucada Timbalao beating a salsa rhythm at the back of the line. Once the procession had completed its parade around the marina, sailors were welcomed to the ARC by World Cruising Club’s Managing Director Andrew

Bishop. He thanked The Tourist Board of Gran Canaria and Las Palmas Town Hall for their support, and he also praised the Port Authority, which manages the marina, for accommodating the vast number of ARC boats, year on year. Gran Canaria Tourism Minister Carlos Alamo said: “I welcome you. It is a pleasure for us to be chosen by you to set off from here to the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. I hope that you are enjoying your stay in Gran Canaria, and have a safe crossing.” From midday on Sunday, the fleet will begin their ocean adventure, but before then, there is a packed programme of events.

The ARC fleet will set off with 190 entries from 35 countries, and it a multi-national celebration which showcases the rally’s international flavour. The attraction to sail in company as one fleet has continued to have undaunted appeal. Twenty-two boats will sail across with children, and 44 will be part of a family adventure this year. The youngest crew member is aged just three, on the German boat Gentoo. The ARC is very diverse and attracts boats of all sizes and design. This year is no exception; the smallest being the German-flagged Amel Fango Falema at 10 metres, with super-yacht

Ulisse, at 30m in the larger range… and everything in between! There has again been a significant swing towards multi-hulls, and 40 catamarans will be lining up. The average cruise boat crew can expect to arrive at their final destination, in Saint Lucia’s Rodney Bay, in 18-21 days, but the competitive Racing Division, with 28 boats vying for position, will hope to reach the rum punch much sooner. One special crew to follow this year is the ARC Youth Team, bringing together 12 sailors aged 18-30 from Gran Canaria, Saint Lucia and the UK, to sail on board a 72ft Challenge sailing yacht, Challenger 1, operated by Tall Ships Sail Training Adventures. They will be accompanied on board by a professional Skipper and Mate, and two qualified Watch Leaders, on what will be their once-in-alifetime opportunity. The crew are supported by sponsors and benefactors, who have been in involved with the ARC for three decades. With the start closing in, preparations for the crossing increase urgency as provisions are stowed, equipment is checked and re-checked, and further crew members fly in daily to join the yachts. World Cruising Club, together with local supporters, including the Gran Canaria Tourist Board and Town Hall, the Port Authority and local chandlery Rolnautic, organise an extensive programme for the participants. In week two, many will take advantage of the free seminars, led by some of the industry’s most respected cruising sailors and marine specialists.

2019 has been a busy year for Tenerife Island Rentals LIKE many businesses, we have been working hard to initiate environmental change within our office, from re-cycling paper, to generally being greener.

We even use glass water bottles instead of plastic! We try to use local charities if a client is disposing of old sheets, bedding or furniture, donating whenever we can, to help those not as fortunate as ourselves. Living on a tourist island, we feel, as a company, it is important to do our bit for local communities, and always try to help where we can, and give something back. We are a family business, and lucky that we have so many owners and tenants who make our job so much easier. We are fortunate to receive gifts, throughout the year, from our

ERE scandal lasted years, and ignored redundant workers TWO former regional premiers from the PSOE Socialist Party have been found guilty by a Seville court in the main case of the so-called “ERE scandal”.

It involves a decade of irregularities in the use of a €680m government fund, which was meant for laid-off workers. A court in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia has found two former regional premiers guilty of corruption-related crimes in a far-reaching scandal, known as the “ERE” case, which involved the PSOE Socialist Party. The probe, named after the Spanish term for a collective dismissal procedure (expediente de regulación de empleo, or ERE), involved allegations of illicit pay-outs from a fund, set up by the regional government to help struggling firms make severance payments to laidoff workers. The system, approved annually by the regional parliament as part of the annual budget, is alleged to have enabled the fraudulent scheme to avoid oversight by the internal audit office. José Antonio Griñán, who served as the PSOE’s regional premier in Andalusia, between 2009 and 2013, has been given six years in jail for his role in the case, while his predecessor, Manuel Chaves, also of the PSOE, in power between 1990 and 2009, has been barred from public office for nine years. What’s more, Magdalena Álvarez, a former government minister and ex-regional economic chief, along with another former regional minister, Gaspar Zarrías, have also been barred from public office for the same period. Griñán, Chaves, Álvarez and Zarrías have all been convicted of prevaricación, which, under Spanish law, is when a public official abuses his/her power by knowingly

making an unfair decision. Griñán was also found guilty of misuse of funds. In addition to Griñán, another four ex-regional ministers have received prison spells: Antonio Fernández (Employment) and José Antonio Viera (Labor), Francisco Vallejo (Innovation) and Carmen Martínez-Aguayo (Finance). The highest sentence went to Fernández, who was jailed for seven years and 11 months. Vallejo and Viera were each jailed for seven years, and Martínez-Aguayo went down for six. Of the 21 defendants, just two were acquitted of all offences: the regional government’s former comptroller, Manuel Gómez, and the head of legal services, Francisco del Río. The probe has focused on a €680-million government fund, used to make payments between 2000 and 2009. The scandal has also affected former, top regional officials from the Socialist Party (PSOE), in power for 36 years until December 2018, when it was ousted by a right-wing coalition, following regional elections. With 507 people under scrutiny for nine years by up to seven investigating judges, the case became so large and unwieldy that it was

broken up into 146 separate probes. On Tuesday, a threejudge panel at Seville Provincial Court handed down decisions in the main case, which will serve as a guideline for the remaining investigations. This main case targeted former regional premiers Manuel Chaves and José Antonio Griñán, as well as six former department chiefs and 13 other former highranking officials from the Andalusian government. “The worst part is that none of the 21 accused has any sense of having committed any crimes,” said one of the lawyers, shortly before the ruling was announced. The trial, which has taken up an entire year, divided into 152 court sessions, has been described as “never-ending”, by both the defence and the prosecution. The ruling runs to around 1,800 pages, similar in scope to the verdict in the Gürtel corruption case, which involved the conservative Popular Party (1,687 pages), and more than triple the space taken up by the Supreme Court ruling on the Catalan secession bid (493 pages). Both former regional premiers and the ex-ministers were considered by the court to

be responsible for the system of public funds. And judges ruled that Griñán, during his time as regional economy chief, was aware of reports from the Comptroller General’s office, which criticised the irregular subsidies, but did nothing in response. Defence lawyers have already said they will appeal the ruling at Spain’s Supreme Court, which will have the last word. But none of the defendants sentenced will see the inside of a prison cell, until that top court has concluded its trial. The scandal began a decade ago, when Seville food wholesaler Mercasevilla underwent an ERE collective dismissal procedure. Police discovered that a few individuals had received early retirement payments from the government fund, despite never having worked for the company. Their investigation uncovered a complex system, set up within the Andalusian Government, to channel early retirement funds to friends of the Labour Department’s Director General, as well as to mayors and to high-ranking PSOE officials. Over the years, the list of potential crimes and irregularities grew to fill two

million pages. The probe was initially led by Judge Mercedes Alaya in cooperation with the Guardia Civil and anti-corruption prosecutors. The probe turned up public funds that had been spent on cocaine by ex-employment chief Javier Guerrero and his driver. There was also a web of ghost companies, and a network of patronage, involving hundreds of entrepreneurs, insurance companies, lawyers and more. Sources involved in the case note that 85% of the money in the fund was used for legitimate purposes, mainly early-retirement payments for more than 6,000 employees. “The heavy-handed headlines about the biggest corruption case in democracy have acted like a steady drizzle that has had an effect, even though they are based on prejudice,” said one lawyer, who requested anonymity. The ruling in the main ERE case probe, which has been used by the PP to counter accusations of corruption over its own Gürtel scandal, comes as Spain’s political parties attempt to forge agreements that will allow the formation of a government following the repeat election of 10th November.

Catalan rebel Ponsati will fight extradition to Spain CATALAN separatist leader Clara Ponsati, now holed up in Scotland, has dismissed sedition charges against her as being “politically motivated”, saying she will fight extradition to Spain. The 62-year-old, ex-Catalan government minister fled to Scotland following her involvement in organising the illegal, 2016 referendum vote in Catalonia. Spain’s Government has filed an arrest warrant for her with UK police. But British officers were involved in a diplomatic pickle with Spanish officials last week, after calling the arrest warrant “disproportionate”. Following her release on bail by an Edinburgh court, the University of St Andrews professor said she would face a “show trial’ if the

UK sent her to trial in Spain. Her lawyer, Aamer Anwar, said the European arrest warrant against her was full of contradictions and mistakes, and provided no evidence of the alleged crime, which Ponsati denies. Anwar said: “We are

instructed by Clara to robustly defend her from what she describes as judicially motivated revenge. “Clara wishes to put on notice that all those Spanish politicians who have abused the rule of law will also be exposed to

Paedo groomed minors with alcohol and drugs

A VILE paedophile, aged 62, who preyed on victims aged 13-15, supplying them with drugs and booze at his home, has been caught by police. He is alleged to have abused seven minors, in Malaga, where he frequented areas such as playgrounds, and groomed them indoors.

Once the pervert befriended the young girls, he would then request sexual favours in exchange for more substances, even threatening them with weapons if they did not comply. The police investigation began after one of the children’s fathers complained to the authorities. By chance, he spotted his 15-yearold daughter being driven by an older man in a vehicle, to “spend the day in a hotel spa”.

Catalan separatist leaders for more than 100 years, for their involvement in organising the 2016 referendum. The jail sentences sparked violent protests in Barcelona, but Ponsati’s case will receive a full hearing early next year.

UK political developments continue to drive the pound

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound (GBP) struggled to gain, last week, after Q3 UK GDP showed the slowest rate of growth in nearly a decade, while ongoing political developments, ahead of the 12th December general election, continued dominating headlines. Over the last fortnight, the GBP/EUR exchange rate fluctuated between €1.15 and €1.17, as UK political developments continued to drive demand, ahead of the election. The EUR/GBP exchange rate, meanwhile, edged up from £0.85 to £0.86, while GBP/USD drifted from $1.29 to $1.27. Political news remains the driving force behind GBP exchange-rate movement, with hopes that the

upcoming general election could see the Conservatives secure a majority, and break the current Brexit deadlock in parliament, lending sterling some support. However, GBP gains were capped, last week, as the UK's preliminary growth figure for the third quarter revealed the slowest rate of growth for almost a decade. Tej Parikh, Chief Economist at the Institute of Directors (IoD), said: “The UK economy has been in stop-start mode all year, with growth punctuated by the various

Spanish man facing Thailand execution

THE Supreme Court of Thailand has ruled that a Spaniard, convicted of murder in 2016, has lost his final appeal and will be executed. Atur Segarra (pictured) is believed to have held compatriot David Bernat hostage in Bangkok, and tortured him for seven days. Segarra, from Catalonia, was trying to force him to send money to his bank account, before killing him and dismembering his body. He pleaded his innocence, but magistrates rejected his last appeal, to which Segarra told

the press: “It is not a surprise; it has not been a fair trial.” There were no eye-witnesses to the murder, but there was substantial CCTV and DNA evidence, which has left the April 2017 sentence to remain. But Segarra can ask the Royal House of Thailand to commute the death penalty for life imprisonment. And, once he has served at least one year of the sentence, he can request extradition to a Spanish prison. Segarra continues to maintain his innocence and claims to be the victim of a trap, which involves his former Thai girlfriend, Pridsana SaenUbon, who testified against him last December.

Brexit deadlines.” Last Thursday also saw Germany's economy avoid a technical recession in the third quarter, with the flash GDP figure rising, unexpectedly, from -0.2% to 0.1%. Meanwhile, the US dollar (USD) began to flag, after optimism surrounding a “Phase One” US-China trade deal increased, following Beijing's announcement that it would renew its US poultry imports. Larry Kudlow, the White House's Chief Economic Advisor, also commented

that the mood between the two superpowers was pretty good, and that they had made very good progress, towards a deal. The UK's political developments will continue to drive the pound, this week, with any signs that the Tories can consolidate their lead in the polls boosting sterling, as a sense of political stability returns. Wednesday saw the House of Common's inflation report hearings. These could have weakened the pound, if the Bank of England (BoE) hinted

at any upcoming rate cuts, because of disappointing inflation data. Meanwhile, Euro (EUR) investors were awaiting yesterday's (Thursday) ECB Monetary Policy Meeting Accounts. Concerning comments about the Eurozone's outlook could prove EUR-negative. Today (Friday), Germany's flash Markit Manufacturing PMI for November could further heighten concerns for the Eurozone’s economy, with Germany's largest sector expected to remain mired in contraction territory. Don’t be scared by a volcanic eruption and an earthquake THE Canary Islands will next year experience a complete emergency simulation, in response to a violent earthquake, following a volcanic eruption in Tenerife.

The simulation will involve the UNE (Military Emergency Unit) as well as all the recognised emergency services and the Civil Protection. The Canaries will host a maximum-level emergency drill, to prepare for a highlevel scenario… as scary and realistic as possible! The scenario is thought to comprise an earthquake, rating 5.2 on the Richter Scale, just off the north of Gran Canaria, which, in turn, then causes a volcanic eruption in Tenerife, specifically in the highlands of Güímar.

Faced with such a panorama, and its supposed terrible effects, the emergency would at maximum level, nationally, calling on all the resources available to face such a catastrophe. Luis Manuel Martinez, Lieutenant Chief General from the Emergency Military Unit, said the plan was ambitious, adding: “With such a scenario, it’s better to be ambitious and prepared for what could happen.” The exercise will take place between 21st-26th March, mainly across Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Given the ambitious nature of the simulation, all the emergency services will

be requested because everything will have to be done, from searchand-rescue to attending to potential victims, as well as communications management, health care… the list goes on! For Canarian Security Advisor Julio Perez, this exercise on the islands is excellent news, because, for he and his assistants, there will be the experience of preparing for any chance event, as well as having a better understanding of how to deal with the situation, if ever one should occur. It is estimated that some 2,000 members from various emergency services will take part in the drill.

Murder, Mystery and My Family Top criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein re-examine historic murder cases, which may have been miscarriages of justice, to provide answers for the family of the convicted. Jeanette Pratt has called upon leading criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein to investigate the historical case of a canal boat murder in which her ancestor George Thomas was implicated. One hundred and eighty years ago, George Thomas and another boatman were convicted and publicly hanged in front of 10,000 spectators. Rugely, Staffordshire, 1839. At dawn, laborers pull the lifeless body of 37 year-old Christina Collins from Trent and Mersey Canal. Within an hour, a crew of narrowboat men were in custody, most of them still drunk from the whisky they had stolen from their cargo hold. They claimed Christina, the sole passenger on their boat, had committed suicide. Before a murder charge could be considered, the prosecution at the time revealed a key witness and proceedings were halted until this prisoner could receive a pardon and testify. At a second trial eight months later, three men were convicted of Christina’s murder and sentenced to death. One was pardoned at the last minute, but George Thomas and another boatman were hanged. Nearly two centuries later, George Thomas’s descendants are convinced of his innocence. Exploring questions of character, the unusual situation of two trials and legal history, can barristers Jeremy and Sasha find enough new evidence to convince the judge that George Thomas was wrongly convicted?

ITV’s international current affairs series continues with more revealing stories from around the world. Tom Clarke travels to Greenland to find out what it was about the country that caught Donald Trump’s eye when earlier this year he suggested that America might want to buy the island from Denmark. Richard Pallot travels to Amsterdam to investigate how party-tourism is making the city unbearable for many of the locals. The red light district is often overwhelmed by huge crowds and the authorities now issue on the spot fines to drunken and stoned visitors that litter the streets at night. Plus, Nina Nannar is in Paris trying out a ‘rage room’, the new global craze of releasing tension through destruction.

Sir Elton and Graham Norton sit down for a world exclusive, intimate chat which sees the legendary ‘Rocket Man’ look back at his extraordinary life and career which spans over 50 years. This exclusive 60-minute film, shot at his home in the South of France while on a break from his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, sees Elton share many candid, personal and laugh-out-loud stories, as the pair revisit Elton’s classic archive performances, interviews and accolades. The revealing film also features previously unseen footage from the 1970s of Elton performing Rocket Man on Top Of The Pops. Elton tells Graham about his childhood growing up in Pinner as Reg Dwight, and reflects on his rise to global super stardom in the 1970s. He also shares musical memories from the 80s and 90s and describes the highs and lows which superstardom brought him. Elton talks about the important friendships in his life, including how he and Rod Stewart have been laughing with each other (as well as at each other) for over 40 years. Speaking openly about the battles with addiction and his recent battle with prostate cancer, Elton also talks about the positive effect that fatherhood has had on his life and how he’d like to spend his time in the future, both on and off the stage.

El Hierro bidding for film location honour

A CROATIAN village has been nominated for Best European Film Location of the Year award, with Canary Island El Hierro among the other nine selections. Among this year’s 10 finalists is one location in Croatia, Završje, which is a small village near Grožnjan in Istria. It was one of the filming locations in 2017 for the film Robin Hood: Origins. The opening scenes, which see Robin Hood coming from

the ruins of his hometown and deciding to take the fight against the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham, were filmed in Završje. The cobblestone roads wind upward leading to an ancient church and church tower built in the 16th century in the village. Next to the church is the magnificent Završje castle, built in the 11th century. The film, directed by Otto Bathurst and starring Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx and Jamie Dornan, was also filmed in Dubrovnik and released. Jorge Coira’s film drama Hierro, is about a murder, situated on the smallest of

islands in the Canaries, and the one furthest west. It’s a paradise in the middle of the Atlantic, declared a World Biosphere Reserve in 2000. The island is characterised by its incredible contrasts, both in and out of the water, from its sea bed, considered one of the continent’s main diving destinations, to its craggy coastline, or its extremely dramatic sheer cliffs. It is the third year that the European Film Commissions Network has, in co-operation with Cineuropa, organised the awards for the best European location for the film and TV industries.

Belgian suspected of killing expat pal AN arrest has been made in Belgium following an investigation into the suspected murder of a retired expat, known as Ana.

Her body was found in Tolox, inland of the Costa del Sol in the Malaga region, by her brother, who is one of her only living relatives. But he travelled to her farmhouse there, at around 5pm, after she hadn’t picked up the phone for their daily call. There, to his horror, he found

the body of his sister, hidden under blankets and showing obvious signs of violence. He called the emergency 112 number, immediately, and Guardia Civil officers, from nearby Coin, took charge of the case and searched the property for clues. The police were actually hunting for a Belgian, with whom Ana might have been involved with, romantically. He was reported to have been helping Ana renovate her home, and had been known to stay over. It is believed that the suspect absconded in Ana’s Mercedes, because

neighbours heard the noise of a car at around 5am. Provisional results of the autopsy, carried out at the Malaga Institute of Legal Medicine, suggested that the victim had suffered multiple blows to the head, and died when one of those blows fractured her skull. There was no sign of a forced entry, so it was probable that Ana knew her victim, at least. The suspect has been detained in Belgium under a European Arrest Warrant, for murder and violent robbery, put out by the Guardia Civil. He was driving Ana’s vehicle when captured.

Boozy Brits are Alicante’s most abusive passengers BOOZY Benidormbound Brits are back in the spotlight, new figures revealing that they have made Alicante’s airport the most disruptive destination in Spain.

Alicante’s main El Altet airport received 216 criminal complaints this year, because of rowdy, drunk and abusive passengers, flying to the Costa Blanca. And British flyers were behind 163 (75%) of these complaints, according to Spain’s air-safety agency AESA. The numbers contrast wildly with just eight denuncias made against Spanish nationals, the second-mostcomplained-about nation, followed by Italy’s seven. The aggressive holiday-

makers also turned Alicante’s El Altet airport into Spain’s No.1 for disruptive passenger removals, with 31 this year. An AESA spokesperson said: “Disruptive, inappropriate, conflicting passengers can cause the diversion of an aircraft and, by extension, affect safety.” Bad behaviour is now a sanctionable offence for passengers flying to Spain, with fines of up to €5,000 meted out to offenders. Since 2017, some 729 people have been fined, adding €580,300 to Spanish coffers. And it’s hardly surprising that Brits were the most-fined nation with 311, followed by 153 Spaniards and 103 Germans. AESA has, reportedly, made a video about the dangers of drunk and disruptive behaviour on board a Spainbound aircraft, and it plans to release it in English in the UK.

Lying car-seller claimed brother was a policeman A CONMAN from Valencia has been arrested, after lying that his brother was a policeman, to win the trust of unwary victims. The 43-year-old, known only as Ricardo MG, chatted online to prospective buyers of his car, while claiming honesty and virtue, via his imaginary, crime-fighting sibling. He then requested a down

payment on the vehicle, before refusing to return any calls or messages. And no wonder, because he was understood to have made thousands of euros from the scam. The conman was nabbed when an off-duty, Local Police officer spotted him in Paterna, parking his Audi A3 in a commercial centre. Six uniformed officers arrived rapidly, handcuffing him on suspicion of fraud. Investigations are now going on to link the man with similar crimes in the region.

Daughter shot in neck by police-officer father

A LOCAL Police officer accidentally shot his own daughter in the neck, accidentally, while removing his pistol at home near Valencia city.

The agent was, reportedly, placing his regulatory firearm into a safety case to prevent any accidents, when the gun went off and struck his 18-year-old daughter at their house in Torrent, at around 11pm. The bullet ricocheted off the floor and hit the girl in the neck, rendering her unconscious, and her father stemmed the haemorrhage frantically, with a towel,

before an ambulance arrived. The policeman, reportedly, performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on his child, while paramedics introduced a breathing tube into her windpipe. The girl was taken to Hospital La Fe, where she was stabilised after two operations.

Teenage drug-dealers receive life sentences, for mistaken murder!

Murderers Svenson Ong-a-Kwie, 19 (left), and Arron Isaacs, 17

TWO drug-dealers have been jailed for life, after murdering 17-year-old girl scout Jodie Chesney this year, by mistake! Svenson Ong-a-Kwie, 19, was sentenced to a minimum term of 26 years at the Old Bailey, and Arron Isaacs, his 17-year-old drug-runner, was locked up for at least 18 years for his part in the murder. The court heard that the pair had been seeking to take revenge on rivals when they killed Jodie. The student was out with friends in Amy’s Park, in Harold Hill, east London, on the evening of 1st March, when two people emerged from the dark, and one stabbed her in the back. Jodie screamed and collapsed in the arms of her boyfriend, Eddie Coyle, 18, as her attackers made off in a fellow drug-dealer’s car. Police arrested the suspects together, a few days later, as they fled from the rear of a house, linked to Isaacs. The defendants denied being responsible for Jodie’s murder, blaming each other for inflicting the fatal wound. But prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC told jurors that both were responsible for the killing, amid incidents of “tit-for-tat” violence in the drug-dealing world. The jury deliberated for under six hours last week, before finding them guilty of the murder. Judge Wendy Joseph QC found Ong-aKwie was the stabber and the 17-year-old his “enthusiastic supporter”.

After sentencing, the judge said Jodie’s death had led to a world of anguish for her family. Jodie’s dad Peter Chesney, who gave up a job in the City following her death, said: “I have lost the most precious human being I will ever know. I have no idea how I’m going to continue my life, or come to terms with the loss.”

Her sister, Lucy, added: “Jodie will be greatly missed, and the people who caused such tragedy to a whole family should hang their heads in shame. You have ripped away a bright future that was destined to make a change to many lives.” Jodie’s boyfriend, Eddie Coyle, was left with post-traumatic stress from witnessing her murder.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands celebrates a 10th anniversary in style

THIS beautiful, friendly girl is about 4-5 months old. She appeared, overnight, in one of the colonies we feed. She gets along with other cats, and is constantly looking for a caress.

Thousands are raised for the children’s charity

CHILDREN’S Charity Helping Hands, celebrating its 10th anniversary of its support for Tenerife’s under-privileged youngsters, enjoyed a wonderful evening at the Europe Hotel Villa Cortes, in Las Americas, raising an astonishing €8,180 for the youngsters in need. Liz Montague, who runs Helping Hands, said: “We had an absolutely fantastic evening, and we feel extremely proud that you all came along to support this very special occasion with us. Ten magnificent years of supporting under-privileged children and their families in Tenerife, raising over €300,000 during this time! So you can imagine how proud we are. “The Hotel was the perfect venue for our DinnerDance, and the all-round service was professional and impeccable! “Thank you to Sammy Sax, who set the romantic mood on the terrace as guests arrived, to be greeted with a glass of champagne. And everyone looked so glamorous in their evening dresses and the men in their suits… you all looked stunning!” The evening flowed perfectly, with delightful food, and wine glasses always full, and the atmosphere was something else. The fabulous Glenn Fransman opened the evening by singing soul

music as the guests dined, and The Soul Brothers were outstanding. Their 5-star performance made the night, as soon as they approached the stage and began to sing. The guests, who could not wait to join them, were enticed to dance the night away with this absolutely brilliant group. Liz Montague added: “There are so many people to thank. Firstly, we would like to thank you all for supporting Helping Hands. You are the people who make Helping Hands the successful charity it is today. “You have always been here to support our events and without your support we would not exist. Many friends have followed Helping Hands from the very beginning, and we thank you for that. “Thank you to all the sponsors who kindly advertised their businesses in our charity brochure, and to everyone who kindly donated over 35 fabulous raffle prizes. “Thank-you to Dominic James for being our auctioneer for the evening. What a great job he performed. “Thank-you to all our lovely Helping Hands ladies, who helped selling raffle tickets, Margaret, Ann, Linda and Frances (pictured), as well as Bev and Nathan for being our glamorous assistants with the auction… what a great team! “Also, many thanks to Geoff Todd, at Letras Uluminadas, for the beautiful stage lighting. And thank-you Mark Thornton for capturing the evening on film… photos on their way! “Finally, thank-you all so much for joining us, contributing so much to our charity, and making the evening such a great success.”

Accion Del Sol News

Not just for Christmas!

WITH Christmas just a few weeks away, we ask you to think very seriously before giving a pet as a present. That little cute ball of fluff will grow into a dog, which will need time, care, money, love and attention.

and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please never let your dog breed. If we all help the dogs in the full refuges, we can make a difference! Assistance required

It is a big commitment which the recipient may not be prepared to undertake, and will, inevitably, lead to another abandoned dog on the streets. Educational programme We are continuing with our programme, and Jack, our Accion del Sol dog, takes his job very seriously, helping to teach school children the importance of caring for their pets, in a correct and loving manner. Presents for the doggies! With Christmas around the corner, we have again started a campaign after the success of last year, asking our friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs. These can include tinned dog food for our older dogs

and puppies, puppy milk, dog toys, dog collars and leads. Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge, so I thought it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to the 200+ dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge by the 20th December, during our opening hours. Alternatively, call 687 905 511, to arrange for your donations to be collected. Please write your name on the box, so that we know who kindly donated. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free. They each have a passport,

Drinks include €8 for a bottle of wine, €1 for water or refreshments, and €1.50 for a jug of beer, until 11.30pm. We are inviting everyone to meet at the bar at 7pm, and the meal will be served at 8pm. The Cabaret includes Frankie Mack Rat Pack Show and Gary Nelson. Tickets can sell out quite quickly for this event, so make sure you get your tickets early, to avoid disappointment. We do have various locations where you can buy the tickets, which are shown on the poster. We have a Facebook page, should you wish to make contact this way. Our Christmas party is always a lot of fun, so don’t miss out this year, and get your tickets

today. We are asking people to bring along some treats for our furry friends - our cats and dogs. We always get so many wonderful donations throughout the year for them, so we want to continue this wonderful tradition, and make our fur-babies’ Christmas special for them. They don’t yet have their forever families to share this happy occasion with, so we do our very best to make sure they are spoilt. We are open all year round, including Christmas Day, because our dogs and cats need to be walked, cleaned, fed and looked after, every single day. If you are looking for a lovely way to spend your Christmas

morning, please do call up and see us, and maybe walk a dog or two. You can visit any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! We have had many adoptions over the last few months, but for every dog that leaves, one or two are found, surrendered or abandoned. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support every year, and would like to wish you all a very successful, fur-baby-filled 2020. If you interested in donating, or holding your own fundraiser for K9, please contact us on 667 638 468.

We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. Wine and Dine

22nd November - 28th November 2019

MANY people grab a latté, an energy bar, a juice or a muffin, without reviewing the macronutrient content, and thinking about what it will do to their hunger.

Too much food not so glorious!

The answer is, not much. Snacking isn’t eating to satiety; it’s a stopgap, and, depending on what you choose, it might actually make you hungrier later. If you’re hungry, eat a real meal, preferably full or protein, fat, fibre and greens, to biologically calm hunger. When you turn off your hunger with enough of the right foods, you’re learning to reset your body-brain satiety signals. Essentially, you’re learning how to eat only when you are really hungry, not when you are in a craving state. Many of us think that we wouldn’ be able to go as long as four to six without feeling hungry. Research shows that eating frequently is actually unhealthy, and detrimental to weight-loss goals. Eating every three or four hours actually sets us up for not only exhaustion and

protein bars, that people reach for, are carbohydrate bombs. It doesn’t really matter if your carbohydrate

premature ageing, but also less fat burning. Digestion takes time When you eat, you begin the process of digestion, which requires your body to expend a lot of time and energy, to break down food into molecules that can be absorbed and utilised. Complete digestion usually takes six hours, or more. When you eat snacks in between meals, you tax your body. You are asking it to restart a process it has not yet completed from the last time you ate. Not only does this take energy away from other repairs your body is making, but it also leads to weight gain. When your body cannot absorb and utilise food, it stores it as fat. In addition, restarting the process of digestion, by snacking, cuts short your body’s ability to burn fat in between meals. Many of the snacks, including

sugar, and causing the release of insulin. If you eat unbalanced, quick meals with processed foods, your blood sugar quickly rises and falls within three hours, leaving you with low blood sugar but still full of insulin, which causes you to crash and crave more carbohydrates, releasing even more insulin. Insulin acts like a cargo ship, picking up glucose (blood sugar) and transferring it from your bloodstream into your cells, so that your nervous system, muscles, and other tissues and organs can utilise the glucose for proper functioning. Once the insulin has done its job, it can linger in your bloodstream for six to eight hours. In the meantime, it prevents the fat-burning process, driving you to eat, and making you crave what will bring your blood sugar back up. You’re probably better off eating meals that turn off hunger, giving your body that well-deserved break between meals, rather than snacking on something that will flood your bloodstream with insulin, and have you craving more junky food later.

Avoid these foods to prevent inflammation

INFLAMMATORY foods are major players in the development of much of the suffering in our society. This is because the process of inflammation is at the root cause of most chronic health issues. Eating healthily is quite simple. Once you understand what foods may damage and what foods may protect your health, you can finally eat a nutrient-dense diet. Sugar Most of us are aware that sugar is bad for our teeth and waistline, but it also fans the flames of inflammation in the body. When you eat sugar, it triggers the release of pro-inflammatory molecules called cytokines, that rev up the fire inside you. Artificial sweeteners A diet high in these sweeteners can lead to inflammation that puts you at risk for glucose intolerance and metabolic disease, which are steps on the

path to diabetes. Researchers believe that some of the bacteria in your gut react to artificial sweeteners by secreting chemicals that provoke an inflammatory response, making it harder for your body to handle sugar. In addition to hiking your risk for diabetes, these sweeteners can increase your risk for obesity, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Glutenous grains Thousands of people aquire better control over inflammatory diseases, ranging from arthritis to psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, by cutting out foods that contain gluten. Inflammatory seed oils Oils like canola, corn, sunflower, safflower, and soybean, as well as margarine and vegetable fats, are highly processed, and

contain an unhealthy ratio of inflammatory omega-6 to anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids. Use healthy substitutes like avocado and olive oil. Dairy When dairy foods are eliminated from the diet, symptoms like headaches, skin breakouts, bloating and a stuffy nose clear up, suggesting that internal inflammation is decreasing.

BPA-lined cans or packages Bisphenol A, or BPA, is already linked to many problems ranging from birth defects to obesity. In addition, research now links BPA to increased inflammation in post-menopausal women. Luckily, more and more manufacturers are offering their products in BPA-free packaging. Read labels carefully, and reach for BPAfree products, whenever you can. Commercial condiments Most grocery-store mayos, ketchups and salad dressings are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, artificial flavours, harmful emulsifiers, seed oils and other junk. Soy “Frankenfoods” We hear all the time that soy is good for us. However, the heavy processing of foods like soy burgers and soy hot dogs can lead to the formation of toxins which can damage your cells, leading to inflammation. If inflammation is a problem, try kicking inflammatory foods out of your diet and see what happens. It may take a few weeks, or even a few months, but you’ll feel healthier and look younger!

Hard work a fat lot of good IT’S widely accepted that having an active lifestyle is important for weight management, so it is commonly thought that having an active job is good for your health. But a recent Australian study has shown that those with physically-demanding jobs, who were sedentary while not at work, were at a higher risk of obesity, than those with more of a work-life balance. The study observed the lifestyles of 807 workers,

looking for any connections between work and leisure time, as it relates to obesity. By monitoring their movement throughout the day, as well as having them keep a fitness diary, researchers categorised the participants into four groups, based on their activity level. “Ants”: those active throughout the day, both at work and at leisure “Chimpanzees”: those with a relatively evenlydistributed composition of work and leisure behaviours “Koalas”: those who are more sedentary, and less physically active at work and at leisure, while also spending more time in bed “Lions”: those very active at work, but mostly sit around at home and stay in bed longer. “Our research shows that ‘lions’, people who spent much of their work time being active, but most of their leisure time sedentary or in bed, tended to have the highest risk factors for obesity,” says University of South Australia researcher Dot Dumuid, Ph.D. The research also suggests that a combination of physical activity and rest, dispersed throughout the day, may be more important than a lot of isolated physical activity at one time. Having an active lifestyle is good, but so is recovery time and rest. “If your body does not get enough time to recover,” Dumuid notes, “it can cause a state of chronic heightened inflammation, which can induce adverse effects, such as storing excess energy as fat.” The key findings of this study highlight the importance of having active and leisure time. There are plenty of ways to incorporate movement into your desk

job, if you fall under the “koala” category. Try taking walks on your lunch break, opting for the stairs instead of the lift, or a quick Pilates desk routine. And if your job keeps you on your feet, try not to immediately crash when you get home. “Someone who is very active at work, but crashes in front of the TV each night, is not getting the right balance, either. The body needs a balance of activity and recovery, throughout the day,” Dumuid says. This research offers a new way to consider what makes or breaks a healthy lifestyle, and demonstrates why an hour at the gym just isn’t enough, if you’re sedentary the other 23. Similarly, an active job doesn’t guarantee a healthy worker.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE and Cádiz settled for a point apiece at the Heliodora, the blanquiazul again raising their game against superior opposition. But this improvement did not translate into the favourable outcome they needed so much. Suso Santana stepped up with a great goal, worthy of the captain’s armband, but, as always with this Tenerife side, it wasn’t enough, and league leaders Cadiz struck back before half-time. The second half proved difficult for Tenerife, who were unable to create clear-cut chances, and the fans were asking, “what do we do with López Garai?” after the coach’s team had gone eight games without a win. Aware of who his team and he were playing, the Basque coach brought some good news to the starting X1. He reintroduced Carlos Ruiz in central defence, instead of Sipcic, while Moore returned to right-back, with Mazán on the left. Álex Muñoz remained unchanged in his position as leader of the back four. In midfield, he had no choice but to introduce the Undabarrena-Alberto pairing, because of the

MotoGP THREE-TIME MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo retired last Sunday at the end of this year’s final Grand Prix, staged at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste, near Valencia. The 32-year-old, from Palma de Mallorca, finished 14th, but that will hardly have mattered to the twowheeled multi-champ after his fabulous career. The Repsol Honda rider Je was 250cc world champion in 2006 and 2007, and secured a hat-trick in MotoGP in 2010, 2012 and 2015. But from 2013 onwards, Jorge reached the top slot just once, because every other title went to Catalunya prodigy Marc Márquez. During Jorge’s career, which started in 2002 when he was just 15, he has also ridden for Derbi, Honda, Aprilia,

absence of Aitor and Milla. On the right, however, he surprised the crowd by playing Captain Suso Santana on the left, with Nahuel and Mierez up front. Tenerife were in charge for the first 15 minutes, everything going through Suso, and he made it count in the 12th minute. He won the ball in midfield, laid it off to Mierez and continued his run. Mierez cut it back beautifully, leaving Suso one on one with Cifuentes in the Cadiz goal.

Suso released an excellent shot that sailed past the keeper to put CDT ahead, and no wonder he celebrated, clearly burying a few ghosts with this brilliant start! The first serious warning came from Cádiz in the 27th minute when Choco Lozano got the ball from a Salvi cross, deflected by Carlos Ruiz, and crashed it against the crossbar. In the 35th minute, Cadiz had their second chance and took full advantage. After a foul by Moore on Espino, the Andalusian team

had a free-kick 20 yards out on the right. Nano Meso delivered a superb effort, the ball being flicked on to Marcos Mauro at the back post, who volleyed it past Ortolá to level the scores. At the end of the first half, right before the whistle, CDT had a chance to go 2-1 ahead with a move started by Nahuel, who played in Mieres. He found Lasso, who, unfortunately, couldn’t find the back of the net, so it was all-square at the interval. The second half was a scrappy affair, with Cadiz

dominating the Tenerife half, yet there was no real threat to Ortolá’s goal. Tenerife tried to respond at the other end, but didn’t really trouble Cifuentes, who had little to do. Coach Garai tried to shake it up in the 71st minute when he swapped Borja Lasso for Dani Gómez. But bringing on the forward he signed from Real Madrid failed to create any clear, scoring chances. He had one final roll of the dice, eight minutes from time, by taking off Undabarrena and Suso for Javi Alonso and Malbasic. But Mierez had the chance to give him the win in the 85th minute. Tenerife hit Cadiz with a counter-attack, Mierez breaking through, but Cifuentes made a good save by his left post, and the match finished all-square. The home side would have taken this result against the runaway league leaders before the game, even though it leaves them 18th in the table. But the board didn’t agree, and, after the match, López Garai was sacked as head coach, leaving them managerless for their next game, against Sporting Gijon tonight (Friday).

Jorge signing off with track-load of trophies Yamaha and Ducati. He has chalked up 152 podiums, including 68 race victories, to his name, and 68 pole positions. His father, Chicho, built him his first bike, when he was just three, and he was his technical trainer until he was 18. Jorge’s mum, María Guerrero, has also competed in endurance and speed competitions, although it is not known whether his younger sister Laura has followed the family tradition. Jorge has a street named after him in Porto do Son, Galicia, where he spent every summer until his teens, at his paternal grandparents’ home. After a stint living in Barcelona, where he finished his education, Jorge moved

to Lugano, Switzerland, 2½ years ago, to live with his dad, who again became

his trainer, in 2012. The former “Ducados Bend” on the Jerez de la Frontera

(Cádiz province) circuit, known as the “cathedral of motorsport” and officially named after the late Ángel Nieto, was re-baptised as the “Lorenzo Bend” in 2013. He was reserve world champion in MotoGP in 2009, 2011 and 2013, the latter behind Márquez, and came third in the standings in 2014 and 2016. In fact, his lowest position at MotoGP level, and in his entire adult life, was fourth, in 2008. But his last three seasons have been disappointing. After moving from Yamaha to Ducati in 2017, he finished seventh in the world championship standings, then ninth the following year, before shifting to Repsol Honda for 2019.

Club Activo so active! STARTING with League 2, on Week 17, Club Activo, who travelled to Marilyns, won the first four games 2-0, then had a slight blip, and lost the fifth game 2-0.

But normal service was resumed, and they won the remaining games without reply, to complete a 7-1 scoreline. It would be unkind to mention the unlucky loser, but Graham said: “One of us had to lose, so it had to be me!” There are some kind words from Graham, on the Facebook page, well worth a look. Pink Elephant welcomed Ourplace Playgirls, and what a welcome! They took the singles for a 5-0 lead, but the Playgirls are made of sterner stuff, taking both doubles, before losing out in the trebles, so a 6-2 success for Pink Elephant. Sundowners entertained Palms Sports Bar and were doing fine at 2-2, including Ash with a 180. But they lost the last four, for another 6-2 result. Picasso’s hosted Ourplace Breakaways, and, despite the Facebook forecast saying it could have gone either way, it finished 7-1 to the home side. Pas O Nadas travelled to The Club House, and this was always going to be close, or so I thought. It went to The Club House 7-1, and Charlie boy deserves a mention for his 120 check-out. Finally, in League 2, in-form Emerald Lounge travelled to Naughty Nautas, and, again, it finished with a one-sided 7-1 result, the Emerald celebrating another good win, with Laura producing her first 2-0 success. But the Clouseau’s

v Scooters & Chevys B fixture was postponed. Division 1 was bound to have some closer matches, so let’s start with Gaffers#Teamhollywood hosting The Waterfall. Some hosts they turned out to be, running away with an 8-0 victory, but I can’t tell you any more than that: nothing on Facebook, and team-sheet not photographed! Meanwhile, Emerald B were at home to Suters 20;30 Crew, and with three legs to Emerald, you’ve guessed it… another 8-0. But Captain Jackie wasn’t too despondent. “Thanks to Grant and the boys,” she said. “Great evening of darts. Would like to say that there were some close games, but I would be lying, lol. Well done to Ken, who managed two legs and Jackie F one, which was our total sum for the match. Still, a great evening, as always, with the crazy gang.” On to Sandys Bandits, at home to Mad Hatters, and it’s all a bit repetitive because it was another 8-0 scoreline, to the visitors. More good sportsmanship on Facebook, where John put: “Sandy’s 0 Madhatter 8. A great night with the Bandits. A pity they didn’t have a full , but still the normal atmosphere and welcome when you play there. Thanks to all for a great night, and the new, wee, Sandy’s team member is a cracker.” Pas O Nadas International travelled all the way to The Pub, and, despite a close match at last, they didn’t waste their trip. They came through with a 5-3 win, all down to some very good finishing, by all accounts. Pas O Nadas A had a visit from The Loch Inn Bullseyes to contend with, and contend with it they did, winning 7-1. But there were some quality darts

from both teams: Richard (Daddy Cool) with two 180s, and the Loch Inn’s Iain with a 171. Finally, Ourplace Playboys met Sandys Bookie boys, who ran into a 4-0 lead, with a 180 along the way for Jim. Playboys pulled one back, and a 180 for Del Boy. But the resistance ended there, and it ended 7-1. division 1 ResultS Scooters & Chevys ‘A’ P-P

Nandu Rugby NANDU Rugby Club, based in Adeje, hosted their annual invitation tournament last Saturday at La Caleta’s T3 sports complex. With the buzz of the recent Rugby World Cup carried over, organisers, players and spectators were all eager to put on a good show for their respective clubs. Teams in attendance among the 240-plus competitors included boys, girls, ladies and men, from the Canary Islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. The event kicked off at 10am, with the Under-18 teams battling it out in their first phase of games, before the Under-10s and Under-14s went hammer-and-tongs for the next couple of hours. Competitors throughout the entire morning showed bravery, skill, speed and team spirit, all of which is why this entertaining sport, and the life skills it provides for our youngsters, is so successful. The junior presentations were made, amid the food, drinks, music and camaraderie, before the Under-18s went into the second phase of their schedule, which included some fine tries

from the Nandu team. Midafternoon was cleared for the senior teams to play, and they did not disappoint as they demonstrated the physical demands of playing this sport, combined with flashes of skill and flair. With the music still playing, the beer still flowing and the sun still shining, it was past 5.30pm when the day drew

to an end, and the teams peeled themselves away, slowly, from the amazing atmosphere at Tenerife Top Training (T3). Many participants from various clubs stayed and continued to help tidy up, while others said their goodbyes and made their way home, reflecting on what had been an outstanding day of rugby

Women’s Football

Women’s strike wrecks their weekend matches A STRIKE by women footballers in Spain’s top division, over a pay dispute, saw all eight fixtures postponed last weekend. Nearly 200 players from 16 clubs voted to strike in October, after more than a year of failed negotiations. They are demanding a professional agreement that regulates minimum working conditions, rights to minimum wages and measures for maternity. Saturday’s two games, and six more on Sunday, were called off. UDG Tenerife did not to travel to their game at Espanyol because their Friday flight was severely delayed by technical problems. But they had planned to strike last Saturday anyway. In a statement on their website, the club said: “We respect the position of the players to support the strike, and we hope an agreement can be reached for the sake of women’s football, and generations to come.” Levante and Sporting de Huelva posted on social media to confirm their game would not go ahead, adding: “Both clubs

decided to join the strike action.” On Sunday, the matches between Athletic Club and Tacon, Real Sociedad and Barcelona, Real Betis and Sevilla, Valencia and Atletico Madrid, Deportivo and Logrono, and Madrid CFF and Rayo Vallecano were all postponed. A video featuring top players, including Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Ainhoa Tirapu and fellow Spain international Silvia Meseguer of Atletico Madrid, was promoted on social media by the players’ union. The action was supported by 93% of players, employed by 16 clubs, at a Madrid meeting on 22nd October. Clubs are proposing a minimum wage of 16,000 euros (£13,700), but the players’ unions are asking for at least 20,000 euros (£17,000).
