Sara is 8th Canarian victim of home abuse

29th November -5th December 2019

Continued from Front

Sara, 26, a native of León, in north-west Spain, became a victim of domestic abuse at her Tenerife home. She was found dead in the early hours of last Monday in her bedroom, lying in a pool of blood. She had bled to death after her 29-year-old old partner, Jaime BH, stabbed her in the neck with a knife after a noisy row, heard by several neighbours at the quiet, residential complex in the Granadilla town of San Isidro. Sara actually made the emergency 016 call, which is a special number for victims of domestic violence and physiological abuse. Unfortunately, when the emergency services arrived, it was too late because Sara had suffered a massive heart attack, probably brought on by the shock of the preceding events. Sara shared the home with Jaime BH, her boyfriend and assailant, as well as her grandmother, who, during the attack, was asleep in the next room. She was awakened by the commotion, and went, immediately, to see what

was going on. But when she reached Sara’s room, she found the door locked. According to Canarian Government delegate Juan Salvador León, several neighbours called the emergency services, having heard what was going on, Neighbours have since recalled that they’d heard previous arguments and fighting coming from the victim’s home, although no official complaints were made. Coincidently, Sara’s mother lives just a few metres from where her daughter died. Sara’s partner, born in Medellin Columbia, with a Spanish nationality, had no criminal record, but he had several cuts to his hands and was taken to hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, Guardia Civil officers, along with a forensic team, collected more evidence from the crime scene. The forensic team didn’t complete their search until after midday on Monday, only a few hours before the body was transferred to a van and taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine, where a full autopsy will be performed. She became the eighth

domestic-violence woman this year to die in the Canary Islands, in her own home. The entrance to the San Isidro building was sealed off during the morning, although several people circulated the area in disbelief, after learning

Wow! New Big Bang alerts Canary Islands A GAMMA-RAY burst, the most powerful explosion since the Big Bang, has occurred in a distant galaxy, and those in the Canary Islands, equipped with huge telescopes, were the first to witness it.

The Daily Mail newspaper reported that the extremely powerful blast created more energy in a few seconds than the sun will burn in its 10-billion-year lifetime. Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions known in the universe. A set of new studies believed they can generate even

more energetic light beams than astronomers previously realised. The powerful blast, discovered by more than 300 scientists from around the world, led by researchers from Curtin University in Western Australia, now has the record for the brightest light ever seen from Earth. Researcher Dr Gemma Anderson said gammaray bursts were the most energetic events in the universe. She noted that the bursts happen so far away that they can be detected only when the beams are pointed directly at Earth, lasting from a few milliseconds to a few hours. “They are likely produced by a massive star, being

blown apart in a supernova, with the resulting explosion leaving behind a black hole,” the researcher told the daily newspaper. This gamma-ray burst was said to have reached Earth on 14th January 2019, and was detected by two space satellites: the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, built by University College London, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. This gamma-ray burst was named GRB 190114C and, within 22 seconds, its coordinates were sent to astronomers across the globe. First to survey the bursts were astronomers at the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescopes on the La Palma Canary Island.

what had happened. Police and media also populated the immediate scene, but, fortunately, calm was restored at around 1pm. A friend of Sara, who was in the vicinity, said she had warned her friend about

Jaime. She also revealed that the couple had lived together for just over three months, and that they had met online. Another friend, obviously affected by events, said Sara was a beautiful person, inside and out. Granadilla Council Mayoress Maria Candelaria Rodríguez, from the Town Hall, where Sara did a three-month internship in the IT department in 2017, said she was a cheerful, discreet and calm person. Sara CG, who had lived in Tenerife for some years, was studying at the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies (ITER). The Canary Islands’ Superior Court of Justice confirmed that Jaime would have been processed on Tuesday and Wednesday, and would then be at the court’s judicial disposition. During an extraordinary and urgent plenary session in Granadilla, attended by several councillors, it was unanimously approved that there would be a three-day period of official mourning, as well as an institutional declaration for the elimination of violence against women.

THE Gran Telescopio Canarias, one of the world’s largest telescopes, is located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, on the La Palma Canary Island. Rafael Rebolo, Director of the Canarian Research Centre Astrophysics Institute, says a giant telescope, costing 1,4bn dollars, is one step nearer to being built on the Canary Islands, should an international consortium give up plans to build it in Hawaii. Rebolo told Associated Press that a building permit for the telescope had already been granted by La Palma town Puntagorda.

Giant telescope could oversea the universe from Canary Island

“There are no more building permits needed according to Spanish legislation,” he said in an email. The international consortium, backing the construction of the Thirty Metre Telescope

(TMT), wants to build it atop Hawaii’s tallest peak. But some native Hawaiians consider the Mauna Kea summit sacred and their protests have stopped construction from going

ahead since mid-July. However, La Palma, which already hosts several powerful telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, was chosen in 2016 as a back-up site for the

giant telescope. Rebolo, who maintains regular contact with the consortium and Spain’s Science Ministry, is optimistic that Spain could end up welcoming the telescope. “I think it is possible,” he said. “The Canary Islands offer a very good solution, so that the TMT can be built quickly, and be a successful project for cutting-edge science.” After protesters mounted a blockade of Mauna Kea’s access road this summer, the consortium decided to go ahead and ask for a building permit in Spain, in case the Hawaiian site became untenable. The Spanish observatory site had already passed environmental impact evaluations, and the Mauna Kea and La Palma summits are considered among the world’s best sites for deepspace observation, thanks to their prime weather and air conditions. The large size of the planned telescope’s mirror means it would collect more light, allowing it to see faint, faraway objects such as stars and galaxies. Astronomers are hoping to peer into the deepest reaches of the universe, and examine the period immediately following the Big Bang.

Fitness parks are now on their way PLAYA San Juan and Alcalá are the first two Tenerife villages to have calisthenics parks installed.

The construction work has already begun on the workout areas, with a budget of €180,954, subsidised by the Cabildo and the City Council.

And Alcalá’s park, the first to be built, will be accessible to people with reduced mobility. The calisthenics parks, requested by Guía de Isora for several years, have finally become a reality, and the first to be installed will be in Alcalá, then Playa San Juan. The Alcalá park is sited next to the current biosaludable (well-being) park on the

Paseo de La Jaquita and will be fully accessible for people with reduced mobility, said Town Planning Councillor Eduardo González. The park in Playa San Juan will be complemented by a new petanque field: a demand that reflects the high number of people who practise this sport, and who need an improved, wider field than the existing one.

Mass propaganda man alleged to be a jihadist GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested a man in Tenerife, believed to be a jihadist, who is said to be calling Muslims to fight. The 26-year-old, from Nouadhihou, in Mauritania, accused of terrorist propagation and indoctrination, was arrested by police, in conjunction with Europol. Police said he was involved

in mass propaganda from several terrorist groups, including Islamic State. A spokesperson added: “He has taken on board the most violent examples of these groups, justifying and praising their attacks against nonbelievers, for which the West is held responsible.” The alleged jihadist used WhatsApp and Telegram to share propaganda videos, made by producers associated with the Islamic State. And, as reported by the Armed Institute, the images were of violent executions, techniques for the execution of attacks and murders, and detailed manuals for the manufacture of explosive devices. Since the “terrorist alert” elevation to Level 4, the Guardia Civil have enhanced all investigations related to this type of propaganda, radicalisation and recruitment structures, especially in the field of new technologies. Officers are also giving special importance to the connections between individuals resident in Spain, and other people residing in countries around us, reinforcing international police co-operation.

Binter flying high with new jet plane

BINTER Canarias has taken delivery of its first Embraer E195-E2 jet, and now the Spanish regional carrier is the second operator of the model. It also prides itself in becoming the European launch customer of the E195-E2 aircraft type.

Earlier, in September, Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras took delivery of the very first E195-E2 aircraft as the worldwide launch customer. In total, Binter Canarias ordered five Embraer E2versions of the E195 regional aircraft. A firm order for three Embraer airplanes was announced in November last year and, later, the carrier exercised its options for an additional two E195-E2s. Binter’s new jets are

configured with 132 economy-class seats. They will be deployed on the carrier’s route network, which includes eight airports on the Canary Islands, nine cities in Africa and two in Portugal. But it will be used mostly on flights to destinations outside the Canary Islands. Apart from the new Embraer E195-E2, Binter operates mostly ATR turboprop planes and a few CRJ1000 aircraft.

Death of bottlenose dolphin

A DEAD bottlenose dolphin was spotted in the El Medano area of La Mareta Beach last weekend. Several people gave the alarm, and the lifeless mammal was removed, rapidly. The bottlenose dolphin is one of the friendliest and most sociable of species, living in groups of 10-12 usually. It is thought that this beautiful mammal became disoriented and finished up on the shore, where it eventually died.

Migrants rescued in Channel

A BOAT carrying 13 migrants was intercepted last Sunday off the Kent coast, near Folkestone. The vessel was spotted, shortly after 9.30am, attempting to cross the English Channel, which signalled an alert to the HM Coastguard and Border Force. Agents stopped the boat near Folkestone, where the group, including several children, were brought ashore. The migrants have now been transferred to a specialist unit for individuals wishing to claim asylum. This year has seen an increase in the attempted English Channel crossings by boats, prompting security to be increased along the French coast. The Foreign Affairs Committee has warned that the UK’s focus on closing borders has driven migrants to take more dangerous routes, pushing them into the hands of criminal groups.

Woman run over by tram

A TRAM in Santa Cruz ran over a 42-year-old woman pedestrian on Tuesday morning in Calle Iriarte, at around 9.30am. The emergency services were called, and an ambulance was sent to the scene, where medics treated the woman. She had suffered injuries to the upper part of her body as well as severe bruising, and she was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment. Local Police were at the scene to assist with the emergency.

AIRLINE Jet2.com has now opened its projected operational base at Tenerife South, to support the airline’s hugely-expanded flight programme to the Canary Islands this winter. It has added more than 200,000 departing seats from across nine of its UK bases this winter, responding directly to a huge demand from British holiday-makers, eager to visit Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria. To support this expanded Canary Islands operation, the base at the South Airport enables the company to have a spare aircraft and

replacement crew on permanent stand-by. As well as further demonstrating its commitment to the Canary Islands, this investment enables the airline to continue delivering a VIP customer experience, and industryleading punctuality. It also allows Jet2 to support an expanded flying programme, with daily and multiple weekly flights operating to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria this winter. It also means holiday-makers can enjoy more flexibility around their holiday. This move was pioneered by the group a decade ago, so that customers could choose holidays of any duration, to suit their budgets and needs. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2. com and Jet2holidays said: “We are the UK’s leading operator to the Canary

Islands, and we continue to demonstrate our confidence and commitment by adding more flights and holidays to the Islands. “The opening of this operational base at Tenerife South underlines our commitment to the Canary Islands. “It will play a key role in supporting our expansion, while also ensuring that we continue to deliver our award-winning customer experience.” Pedro Martin, Tenerife Cabildo President, said: “We are thrilled that Jet2. com has chosen to open an operational base in Tenerife. “It shows its continued commitment to the island, after adding in a lot of extra capacity this winter, which proves that Tenerife remains a top choice for UK holidays.”

Man, 62, attacked elderly tourists, and robbed them THE National Police have arrested a 62-year-old man, charging him with committing violent robberies in the tourist areas of Arona and Adeje.

An investigation was carried out after several reports were made by tourists in the south of Tenerife, about a man employing violence and intimidation when robbing them. In some cases, the assailant approached elderly tourists from behind, pushing them to the ground, as well as disorientating them. He then snatched any jewellery they were wearing, as well as

purses or wallets. On one occasion, he attacked an 80-year-old tourist, who had to be admitted into hospital until he had recuperated from the ordeal. The thief was identified during the investigation, and officers were able to study his movements until they

collected enough evidence to arrest him. He was on the move constantly, dodging the police, but officers eventually arrested him at an Adeje apartment. The man is now in police custody, waiting to be dealt with by a judge.

Hotel bargains in the Canaries may boost our tourism

Sanchez-Iglesias coalition gets a Yes from Podemos

Pedro Sanchez and Pablo Iglesias, a Government get-together

A RULING coalition to form Spain’s Government in Madrid has been given the green light by Podemos party members.

FOLLOWING the Thomas Cook crisis, Ryanair closing bases and the impact of Brexit on Spanish tourism, the Canary Islands are doing their best to attract winter visitors. British holiday-makers, looking for a getaway in the next few months, can take advantage of the Canarian hotels cutting their prices, as well as new flight-routes opening up. Yet the Canaries’ tourism sector is preparing for a winter of discontent, and Ramon Estalella, of Spanish hotel group Cehat, admitted that hotels were reducing prices for rooms as they face a drop in holiday-makers. “It is probably going to be the first winter in the last four

years, in which more of an effort is needed to capture demand,” he said. “This is down to some zones and markets at lower levels than in previous years.” So far this year, there has been a drop of 9.2m tourists from 2018 heading to the Canary Islands, according to a study by Cehat. The impact of factors, including Thomas Cook’s demise, along with Ryanair closing bases in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, means the Islands are facing over 745,000 fewer seats on planes heading for the sun, up to August 2020. This is divided up with 253,000 fewer seats from now to the end of the year, and then 491,000 up to August next year. A positive note for Brits is that EasyJet, along with Jet2, Vueling and Iberia, as well as other airlines, have taken

up the Thomas Cook slots. The Canary Islands tourism office told Daily Star Online: “Some airlines have reacted quicker than others to the drop in plane numbers arriving. “Jet2, for example, has been the first to sell 168,000 new seats. Also, the Hungarian Wizz Air will start a new route to the Canary Islands, from its Luton base to South Tenerife. “TUI were, initially, looking at reducing capacity, but they have now changed their approach and will have additional seats available.” This week, easyJet launched a package-holiday business, which will allow customers to book hotels in various locations, including the Canary Islands. New easyJet routes include those from Belfast to Tenerife and Lanzarote, which will, next summer, add around 130,000 more departure seats.

The left-wing political party, led by Pablo Iglesias, saw 97% of votes cast by its members endorse a deal, which will keep Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and his PSOE socialist party in office. A pre-agreement had been signed between the two leaders on 12th November, shortly after the General Election. But it needed the backing of Podemos

members before it could be formally ratified. In the vote, of the 134,760 people who decided to take part, 130,150 voted ‘Yes’ (96.8%), while 4,244 said ‘No’ (3.16%) and 366 voted blank (0.27%). As reported by Podemos, the participation featured 59% of active, registered voters. According to Podemos rules for internal processes, a member who has accessed the party’s participation website at least once in the last year is considered an active registrant. By holding the vote, Podemos kept to its code of ethics, which promises not to enter a political pact without the go-ahead from its members.

Not enough police, stress airport’s night workers

NIGHT-SHIFT workers at Tenerife South Airport claim there is a significant lack of police presence to protect them, when necessary. They have reported concerns about their safety and security, especially after a person selling ONCE tickets was stabbed by a vagabond. He is a recognised man, who roams the vicinity. The ONCE worker was stabbed several times in the neck and arms by a broken glass bottle. The Airport Committee raised the alarm, and served a denuncia

on the CEP (Spanish Police Federation) after the attack. The Committee state that Tenerife South airport is the gateway for many tourists who visit the island, as well as an economic engine for the whole of Tenerife. They add that the workers’ individual safety should be ensured at all times, and they want to denounce the situation publicly, before the airport Director, along with all other official bodies, including the head of the state security. These airport workers insist that there is a sense of insecurity at their workplace, both inside and outside the premises.

Sex-rated sculptures are erected on beach

Here’s one example, but the others are too racy for a family paper!

STATUES of figures, engaged in X-rated sexual acts, which include threesomes at an Alicante beach in Spain, have led to controversy among locals and expats. The so-called artwork, criticised as “bordering on pornographic”, has sparked many complaints, and

one horrified British ex-pat, 73-year-old Dave Mills, said he could no longer take his grandchildren to the Costa Blanca beach, while others complained to the local council. The sculptures, erected at the popular beach, have been described as “bordering on pornographic”, and “unsuitable for a place frequented by young children”. Mr Mills told The Sun newspaper: “Thousands of

visitors and locals, including children, walk along the ‘passeo’, and they will not be able to miss the pornographic elements.” However, a female sunbather, aged 62, who would rather stay anonymous, told the daily publication that the art had taught her “a thing or two” and had helped her keep an open mind. “I must admit I kind of like them… it broadens the mind somewhat,” she added.

Migrants land Baby born ‘pregnant’ was also carrying identical twin in El Medano EARLIER this year, a baby was, apparently, born “pregnant” with her own sibling, and she needed an operation to remove her twin in one of the most bizarre events ever.

A MIGRANT boat with 28 people on board, six of them minors, arrived last Monday at the El Medano coast. The patera was spotted some 200 metres from the beach, so the emergency services were called to intervene. Officers from the Guardia Civil and the Local Police, as well as personnel from a local health centre, arrived to attend to the migrants. Happily, no one required medical assistance, and they are all in the hands of the Guardia Civil now.

Last March, a mother gave birth to a baby girl she named Itzmara, through a caesarean delivery, which is a normal procedure for women. Otherwise, a vaginal birth would put the baby or the mother at risk. However, just a mere 24 hours later, doctors performed a similar operation on Itzmara herself because she had, apparently, absorbed her twin while they were in the womb, making her “pregnant” as well. The case was first discovered when the mother, Monica Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, had an ultrasound while she was seven months into her pregnancy. Through the ultrasound, the doctors discovered that Vega, apparently, had two umbilical cords inside her. While one of the umbilical

cords connected the baby to the mother, the other, apparently, connected the baby to a mass, which was confirmed to be her parasitic twin. It was then diagnosed that the baby Itzmara had “fetus in fetu,” which is a rare condition, occurring when the twin is shown to have the malformed body of its identical twin. From this, the doctors then decided that Itzmara needed to be delivered, so a C-section was performed on her immediately. Leaving the baby with its parasitic twin risked the twin itself growing and damaging Itzmara’s developing organs.

Thus, Itzmara was given a C-section after Vega gave birth to her. The mass, reportedly, had neither heart nor brain, and the baby is reported to be in good health following the surgery. Information from the National Institutes of Health suggests that Itzmara’s case of fetus in fetu is extremely rare… a miracle even, because these circumstances happen just once in around 500,000 births. However, not all cases of the condition are similar, because there are some that develop once the child has grown up… and even some that don’t affect the person, once he or she is an adult.

Crash kills pensioner, who wasn’t wearing a seat-belt A LOCAL man, aged 66, from the La Palma town of Tajiya, died after being involved in a head-on collision last Sunday.

The pensioner wasn’t wearing a seat belt when the incident happened, in the El Paso municipality that afternoon on the LP-2 and the LP-3, the junction where the two main roads merge. At the time of the accident, for reasons unknown, the elderly man did not have his seat belt on when drove his Toyota Hilux into the oncoming lane and crashed into a Citroen Berlingo. Fortunately, the people inside that car were relatively unscathed. But, on impact, the 66-year-old was thrown from his car. Sadly, he died almost immediately, after suffering a heart attack, which meant

that when the emergency ambulance team arrived, there was nothing they could do for him. A 73-year-old man in the Berlingo had a minor leg injury, while his companion, a 69-year-

old woman, experienced bruising. They were taken to a nearby health centre, where the man was treated for his injuries, and the woman was checked over. The dead man was identified

as J.R.P.G, who was seen earlier in the afternoon, driving erratically in his Toyota, around the area where the accident occurred. The Guardia Civil were first at the scene to assist with the collision.

Bulwer’s petrel flies more than 1,800km in search of its food

THE Bulwer’s petrel flies more than 1,800km, from the Canary archipelago up to the Azores, hunting for food, according to data from a new scientific monograph. It is based on studies carried out from 2010 to 2018 by the Research Group of Ecology of Marine Birds at the University of Barcelona, under the supervision of Professor Jacob GonzálezSolís. The new study, carried out in the breeding colony of Lanzarote’s Montaña Clara, in the north, shows the bird’s migratory routes, as well as its wintering areas. With the data researchers obtained from 105 birds with geolocation devices (GPS and GLS), there were 59 completed routes to find food, from 48,597 geographical positions. It is the most comprehensive, scientific study ever published on the diet, plus the daily and annual pattern of the movements of Bulwer’s petrel, which

13 CW

is a threatened species. The new volume is the fourth monograph of the Migra programme, promoted by SEO/BirdLife, with the collaboration of Iberdrola Spain Foundation. And the Bulwer’s petrel, which is featured on the red list of threatened birds in Spain, breeds regularly in the archipelagos of the Canary Islands, Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde. The species, which spends most of the time at the open sea, gets closer to the

land, mainly cliffs and stone quarries, during its mating season. During the breeding season, between May and August, the petrel flies around the Canary Islands and reaches the Azores, simply to find food. These journeys take place over the ocean waters, where preys live, and are two-way journeys coming back to the breeding colony. Both males and females take turns, of up to 15 days, to incubate the only laid egg.

Following the egg’s hatching, after 45 days of incubation, the bird has to be fed frequently and these routes are reduced to a half. In both phases (incubation and breeding), petrels fly during a similar period of time, day and night, and there are no differences in time, distribution areas, and distances made by both genders. The geolocation techniques also allowed researchers to know the daily activity of these birds over the year. Bulwer’s petrels rest in the surface waters during the day and show eating habits at night. In particular, they feed from preys: fish, small cephalopods, such as squid, and some crustaceans, which move to the surface to eat at night. Bulwer’s petrels’ threats in the open sea are not yet clear, but the effect of climate change on the ocean is certainly one of them.

AN entire Welsh village, which has been on the market for the past three years, just won’t sell, even though it’s going for the same price as a London flat. The hamlet of Aberllefenni, south of Gwynedd, near Machynlleth, was put up for grabs by estate agent Dafydd Hardy for £1.5m, back in August 2016 . Sixteen homes and cottages, along with dozens of acres of agricultural land, are included the sale. But it seems as though no buyers are tempted to make the plunge, reports WalesOnline . Since then, it has been reduced in price by £250,000, because sellers blame the uncertainty around Brexit as a reason why it won’t go. At £1.25million, it is currently valued at the same sum as a plush two-bed apartment in Knightsbridge in west London. “The main problem is the lack of confidence in the market ever since the referendum took place,” said Mr Hardy. who has five offices covering Gwynedd, Anglesey, and Conwy. “We’ve had a lot of interest, and we’ve even come close to selling them a few times. But the political goalposts keep getting moved, and no one knows what’s going to happen in the future.” But because the properties are already tenanted, any potential landlords will have to consider potential changes to things like the EPC ratings levels, which govern energy efficiency. “It could be that, but properties of a certain banding might end up being deemed unlettable until they’re brought up to spec,” said Mr Hardy. “That means installing new boilers and upgrading heating systems. “That means a lot of prospective buyers will be waiting until long after the December General Election before deciding whether or not to take a punt. “In fact, I think people will have to wait until a good six months, when the economy finally starts to calm down, and confidence returns to the market.”

That produced a third star for one restaurant in Spain, six eateries their second, and honoured another 23 starred restaurants for the first time, with two based in the Canary Islands. The Canaries now have seven Michelin Star restaurants, with five in Tenerife, and two newlyappointed establishments in Gran Canaria. But just one Canarian restaurant holds two Michelin stars, and that is M.B, based in Tenerife’s Ritz-Carlton Abama, in Guia de Isora. It is headed by world-famous Martín Berasategui, who holds 10 stars in total, which is the most for any chef in Spain. And Martin is the fourth, globally, behind Joel Robuchon, Alain Ducasse and Gordon Ramsay. Los Guayres is based in Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, in Mogán, and Alexis Álvarez, also from Gran Canaria, has been head chef since 2014. Spain now has 11 restaurants with three Michelin stars, although several chefs, who own eateries of lower categories, have that many to their names. They include Quique Dacosta, whose eponymous restaurant in Dénia (Alicante province) has a waiting list of up to six months, although his El Poblet premises in Valencia, which has just won

Even its threestarred joints can come in at around €150 to €200 a head, and it is perfectly possible to find meals in one-and twostarred restaurants for a twofigure sum. In fact, plenty of Michelinstarred restaurants in Spain offer tastier menus, covering a series of small dishes as a sample of the best of the main list. And, altogether, they make up enough food to fill three conventional courses, amply, for between €28 and €45 a head.

The first trans-Atlantic drug submarine sails in THIS may be of huge significance for counternarcotics operations, because it is the first example of a Latin-American style, narcosubmarine in Europe. And it may also be the first instance of a transatlantic version.

At dawn last Sunday, Spanish police descended on a picturesque bay just north of Vigo, on Spain’s Atlantic coast. The so-called narco-submarine, used for smuggling cocaine, was abandoned by its crew. They appear to have scuttled it to hide the evidence. Two were arrested and a third suspect was reported to be on the run. Despite more than 160 reported narco-submarine incidents since 1993, this one is extraordinary. Virtually all previous sightings have been between Colombia and Mexico, and mostly in the Pacific. Narco-submarines, typically, travel a couple of thousand miles. But a transatlantic voyage in such a small craft

is hard to contemplate. The craft is estimated to be 24 yards long, which makes it around twice the size of the typical drug submarines, found operating between Colombia and Mexico. Like most others, it is, technically, a Low-Profile Vessel (LPV) instead of a genuine submarine. This means that it runs very low in the water to avoid detection, but it cannot submerge fully. Initial reports suggest that the submarine had been operating between Guyana, in South America, and

Spain. And, reportedly, it stopped off in Portugal enroute, which is where lawenforcement officers picked up its trail. This is broadly consistent with expectations, with likely drug routes between South America and Cape Verde off the coast of Africa, then up to Spain. It is well known that drugs are trafficked via this route, but by cargo ships and yachts. Yet Narcosubmarines have long been suspected. In 2014, for example, a large narcosubmarine was discovered in

Guyana, lending credence to this notion. Suspicions of transatlantic vessels have been around since 2007, when an extraordinarily-large narco sub was discovered on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, in the Guajira Desert. In 2010, a convicted drugsmuggler was reported to have been building a $20m submarine in Africa. It was intended to sail across to Latin America, where it would pick up a cargo of cocaine. It would then visit the Canary Islands, and from there, the drugs

would be sent to Europe. Then, in December 2015, a narco-submarine was discovered on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, in the jungle. But that made no sense, unless the crew had been preparing for a transatlantic trip. It proves there have been several precursors, but this discovery in Spain is the most solid evidence yet of this happening. However, it is not the first time the Spanish coast, around Vigo, has been at the centre of narco-submarine news. In August 2006, a small, steel submarine, discovered abandoned on a beach, was suspected of being meant for drug-smuggling. But it was built locally, probably for ferrying drugs from larger ships offshore. That vessel was newsworthy at the time, but it now ranks as a curiosity, rather than a trend. But this latest discovery changes the understanding of international drugsmuggling by experts.

Human-traffickers’ gang leader given a four-year sentence

29th November -5th December 2019

THE leader of a humantrafficking gang, who brought more than 100 migrants into the UK inside refrigerated lorries, has been jailed for four years in Spain.

Iraqi-born Shwana Rafiq put the lives of whole families at risk by hiding them in freezing-cold trailers in which temperatures could fall below 4°C. The 36-year-old was sentenced after he admitted playing a lead role in an international criminal gang, who organised operations involving the smuggling of Kurds into Britain and Ireland. Spanish police believe Shwana’s gang were responsible for smuggling more than 100 people into the UK between 2017 and 2018, earning up to €1m in the process. He was jailed after striking a pre-trial plea bargain deal with prosecutors at a Spanish court in the Teruel province of Aragon, after being arrested in January last year. State prosecutors had

initially been seeking a 14year prison term for Spanish expat Shwana, on charges of money-laundering and human-trafficking. His Spanish wife, Esperanza Martinez, who was facing a prison sentence of up to 12 years before admitting to being his accomplice, was given a two-year jail term for human trafficking. This will be suspended, as is common under Spanish law for first-time offenders, condemned to under twoyears’ jail time. Five other people linked to the people-smuggling organisation were given prison sentences, ranging

from six months to a year. The Spanish police operation was sparked by the discovery of six Iraqis, including four children, in the back of a UK-bound refrigerated lorry at a service station near Teruel. They alerted the unsuspecting lorry driver of their plight by screaming for help, hours after being hidden in the trailer by Shwana, who broke into it, then locked it back up with them inside. The following month, eight Turkish and Iraqi migrants, including another four children, were discovered in almost identical circumstances, in a second UK-bound lorry, near the

same spot. Describing the organisation’s methods, a Spanish National Police spokesman told the Daily Mail: “It consisted of the introduction of groups of between six and eight people, generally families with young children including babies just months old, in the back of refrigerated trucks bound for the UK. “The members of the organisation would try to obtain detailed information about the destination of the vehicles. And, while the driver was resting overnight, they smuggled people into the cargo hold, without him realising.

“The normal length of stay would be between 30-40 hours, at temperatures of no more than four degrees Celsius. “The gang were conscious of the risks these sorts of journeys entailed, and they acted with complete disdain for the lives and well-being of the people they were trying to smuggle into Britain. “At times, they even resorted to hitting those who had panic attacks while they were travelling, or giving them drugs to calm them down. “The price people were charged increased considerably, if they requested the presence of a smuggler inside the back of the lorry to help them.” Teruel’s three sentencing judges said: “Given the low temperatures they travelled in, which were never above four degrees Celsius, there was a clear risk to their life and physical integrity, to the point that, in some cases, the migrants themselves had to raise the alarm so they could be rescued. “The organisation has organised and participated in a large number of illegal transfers of migrants, and the financial benefits they have obtained would have been high. “The activities carried out by the criminal gang consisted of transferring unauthorised migrants to different countries in Europe but in the case of this organisation especially, to the United Kingdom.”

Smiling Airbus is whale of a plane! THE world’s largest cargo plane is shaped like a whale, smiles widely and could take off for the first time at the beginning of next year. Workers at the Airbus’ plant in Getafe, Madrid had to build and open a hangar of 7,200 metres, spread over 1.75 acres, to enable the Beluga XL to be stored. It combines part of the fuselage of the A330200 and the A330-300, but has 30% more cargocarrying capacity than its predecessor, the A300 Beluga, being seven metres (22ft 9ins) longer and one metre (3ft 3ins) wider. While the A300 Beluga was large enough to carry one A350 wing between plants, the Beluga XL is able to carry two, which will reduce the number of return trips between factories across Europe. The Airbus profits have risen in the past year by 141%, thanks to sales of the A320, and this figure is likely to rise with the help of the Beluga XL because parts for these aircraft can be shipped in fewer trips. The Beluga XL is awaiting a licence from the

European Union to allow it to take to the skies officially, and this is hoped to be imminent. Its main hurdle was its weight: at 63 metres long and 19 metres high, with a wing-span of 60 metres (just under 207ft feet by 62ft4ins with a 197ft wing-span), the paperwork specified two options for take-off weight, of 227 and 205 tonnes, both with a maximum landing weight of 187 tonnes. The difference is that, as the aircraft burns fuel in flight, it will be lighter on landing than on take-off.

The Beluga XL is able to fly 4,000km (2,845 miles), loaded to full capacity, thanks to its two Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines, and it can transport up to 51 tonnes of goods. And, like its earlier version, the “whale” is heavier at the front than at the back. Airbus will gradually replace its five Beluga STs, first launched in 1990, with the Beluga XL, which will operate between 11 European destinations, increasing the Airbus industrial capacity, as well as enabling it to meet a wider number of commercial

deadlines, which is crucial for the company to be able to compete with its direct rival, Boeing. That said, Airbus also uses road, rail, river and sea transport to move its parts between production centres. The Beluga XL, first unveiled in public in 2018 at the ToulouseBlagnac aerodrome, made its inaugural flight in the presence of 10,000 employees and subcontractors, mostly from Getafe. While awaiting authorisation, the two Beluga XLs have

made just over 200 test flights, totalling 700 hours, taking in all its future 11 European destinations to be able to check that runways and hangars have been adapted for its size. Now, with the European Air Security Agency (EASA) licence on its way, the smiling whale will be in operation for full business by the beginning of 2020. Its wide smile and eyes, which give it a whale-like appearance, were designed and chosen by Airbus employees.

Business

AFTER over two decades of looking after the finances of both expatriate Canary Island residents and non-residents, business is going from strength to strength for Blevins Franks Financial Management Canary Islands. Further expansion has begun under company partner, Paul Montague, starting with the appointment of Adele Thomas as Private Client Manager. “Our growth over the past few years has been incredible,”says Paul. “With continued low highstreet interest rates, bank insolvency and survival, playing on people’s minds, investors have been looking for a different home for their money. “People also want to ensure that they are perfectly positioned, tax-wise, in the Canary Isles, and that they are not looking over their shoulder, especially with the Brexit issues. Our reputation for trust and honesty, in such tumultuous, financial times, has ensured that client referrals are at an all-time high. We’ve basically had no choice but to grow the team.” Adele Thomas began her financial career in 2003, with various roles at NatWest bank in the UK. A keen football fan (and a fully-qualified coach), her next position was with her favourite team, working in corporate sales and business development at Everton Football Club. This was followed by four years as director of a mortgageadvice company, before she was head-hunted by Paul in July 2019, to assist with the ongoing expansion plans at Blevins Franks Canary Islands. “Adele will help me carry out reviews of existing client portfolios,” says Paul. “Between us, we’ll ensure funds are in the right place at the right time, to satisfy the needs of not just the clients, but also their immediate family, thereafter.” Before the move, Adele had been a regular visitor to Tenerife since childhood, always thinking that one day she would like to live on this sunny island. “Obviously, it was a big decision,” she recalls. “It wasn’t just me to consider, there was also my husband and my three children, Ivy, 11, Evie, 6, and Frankie, 2. We’d all be uprooted, and I didn’t know where to start.” Fortunately, she had inbuilt help. Alison Skirrow has worked with Paul for 11 years. She’s the business

co-ordinator, and the first point of contact for clients. According to Adele, motherof-two Alison couldn’t do enough to help her settle into a new life in Tenerife, both in and out of the office. “Alison is unbelievably efficient in the office, but she’s also such a warm, people-person,” says Adele. “Both she and Paul were instrumental in helping me find the right schools for my kids, and making in-roads to a social circle, via local sports and activity groups for ourselves, and for Ivy, Evie and Frankie.” The banter amongst the trio in the office is palpable, and Adele had no problem fitting into this informal, office culture. “It’s a unique atmosphere,” she says. “The level of professionalism is so high, but it’s not stuffy at all. “Paul is one of the most meticulous people I have ever met, but also so downto-earth. What you see is what you get. No airs and graces, just straight talk, mixed with a great sense of humour.” Alison agrees. “Paul might be the boss,” she says, “and a good one, at that. But, at the end of the day, he knows it’s me who wears the trousers!” Paul looks up from his screen at the far end of the office. A cheeky smile crosses his face. “We have a chuckle,” he says. “There’s a good team spirit, but we’re deadly

serious when it comes to looking after our clients. It’s all about customer care. People trust us.” It’s this trust and approachability that has sustained Blevins Franks’ reputation as the European leaders of

financial management. All Blevins Franks partners and private-client managers are regulated by the UK’s financial-conduct authority, including those covering the Canary Islands. This gives clients an extra layer of trust and security. “It’s quite simple,” says Paul. “If you have monies to invest, we’re the best at looking at your overall financial situation when it comes to retirement, investment and estate planning. No one is better at making sure your money is in the right place.” The expansion of the company in the archipelago is a testament to the Tenerife team’s success and popularity. They care for the finances of many families, and have well over 100 million euros of funds under advice, in the Canary Islands. With the client base growing, and the consequent expansion of the Canary Islands team, it’s no wonder that there’s such a positive atmosphere in the Tenerife office. “I actually love coming to work,” beams new recruit, Adele, “and I’m proud to be associated with such a wellrespected company. I’ve now got a dream job, with my dream company, in my dream destination. What’s

not to smile about?” Blevins Franks has been providing specialist financial advice to British expatriates across Europe for over forty years. The Switch ITV1, 15.00

Contestants are first given a chance to bank as much money as they can individually in the ‘Easy Money’ clue-based round. Each answer could rhyme with a word, start or perhaps end with the same letter. Every correct answer is worth cash (round 1 £100, round 2 £200, round 3 £300) and they each have just 45 seconds to add to their money pots. The three ‘Easy Money’ rounds alternate with ‘Switch’ rounds. And here’s where the quizzers can get tactical, as they’re given the chance to ‘stick or switch’ question categories. Will they switch out their competitors’ favourite subjects? Or will they focus on sticking their favourites? Once the categories are locked in the quiz changes to multiple choice questions. But there’s a twist - one of the answers is incorrect. Contestants race to secure a correct answer. Choose the wrong one and you’re ‘switched out’ of the game. Frozen out, you’re at risk of being left with the wrong answer in the next round, too! The ‘switched out’ player can only hope that one of the other contestants picks an invalid answer and brings them back into play. On the third and final question, the quizzer ‘switched out’ is eliminated. By the final ‘Switch’ round, only two are competing, with just one right and one wrong answer so speed is paramount. And if you’re ‘switched out’ in the deciding third category question you lose, leaving your opponent to move victoriously to the final. The plucky finalist gets one more chance to ‘switch out’ the final categories. Once the three are stuck, they need to answer just one question right in each category to win half their pot.

On the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Romanian revolution, Paul Davies returns to Bucharest, where he and the ITN team were the only international reporters to gain access to the country’s main TV station as the revolution gained momentum. He returns to the television studio he reported from meeting old friends, key players in the uprising and listens as survivors recount their disappointment in the uprising’s outcome. Jerusalem has an unusual problem... there are not enough places to bury their dead. For Jews, Muslims and Christians alike, its soil is sacred. The city needs more than 4,000 new graves every year. With sought-after plots costing tens of thousands of pounds, the latest solution is to dig downwards – John Irvine visits the new six-storey underground burial site.

Gold Digger

BBC1, 21.00

Newly engaged, Julia (Julia Ormond) finds herself unable to share the good news as her children arrive for Christmas. Benjamin (Ben Barnes) can’t help but feel bruised, and makes a point of calling his ex to tell her the news. Under pressure, Julia blurts out the news over dinner and is met with a shocked silence - none of her children congratulate her. Benjamin thanks Julia for proving her commitment to him, and it looks like the worst is over - but Julia has one more person to tell. Ted (Alex Jennings). Ted says he knows exactly why Benjamin is marrying Julia, and an ugly row ensues. But Julia takes ownership of the situation. She won’t apologise to her children any more for moving on, and she’s decided that she wants to get married soon. But as Ted struggles to keep himself together and he throws himself into a new plan to propose to Marsha (Nikki Amuka-Bird). Taking this as proof he is still obsessed with Julia, Marsha walks out - and Ted breaks his sobriety. Hiding this from everyone, Ted uses his children’s reluctant festive visit to urge them into action: Benjamin is going to leave their mother and take their inheritance - they need to act. And if they won’t, he will.

Yuto’s (Yosuke Kubozuka) plans to return to Tokyo are derailed when he receives a call from Jiro (Yoshiki Minato) - he has Taki (Aoi Okuyama) and they’re going to throw her off a rooftop unless Yuto hands himself in. Kenzo (Takehiro Hira) and Yuto race to save her, but Kenzo is confronted by a vengeful Abbot (Charlie Creed-Miles) who is still out for Yuto’s head. They make a deal and Abbot accompanies Kenzo to the rooftop. However, when Sarah (Kelly Macdonald) see Abbot strong-arming Kenzo into a car her suspicions are roused, and she decides to tail them. Once everyone eventually reaches the rooftop, they find themselves in a stand-off - until Taki, in a heartfelt outpouring of grief, highlights the lies and faults in everyone around her and confesses her own insecurities. After an almost magical moment of self-reflection, it is time for Yuto to act - but will he become the killer his brother tried so desperately to save him from, or will he sacrifice his freedom for the good of his family? Meanwhile, having made it to Natsuko’s (Mitsuko Oka) family home in the country, Eiko (Anna Sawai), Natsuko and Rei (Yuko Nakamora) are apprehended by Fukuhara’s (Masahiro Motoki) men. Before they’re attacked, a flurry of bullets fells their assailants - and standing in the smoke is an unexpected saviour who could either be friend or foe. At the yakuza peace meeting, Shin Endo (Kobayashi Katsuya) forces Fukuhara to atone for Saburo’s (Masaya Mimura) murder. Fukuhara complies, cutting off two fingers - but it soon becomes apparent that this isn’t enough: Shin Endo’s thirst for revenge is unquenchable.

St Andrew’s Sled Ride Festival 2019

Every year, in late November, the people in Icod de los Vinos get their sleds ready to ride down the many hills surrounding the village. Police sniffer dog finds party pills in car boot

29th November -5th December 2019

Lorry driver charged with manslaughter of of 39 frozen travellers

IT was like a Q Branch gadget from a James Bond film. But, far from fighting evil villains, the false floor in a Benidorm vehicle yielded plastic bags, filled with party pills, hash and a switch-blade. Two British men, responsible for the illegal substances, were charged with drug-trafficking. The heist came after Benidorm’s Local Police were patrolling the English Square area earlier this month, accompanied by canine units. One of the dogs marked an area of the boot of a stationary car, but, initially, police could not discover the source of the dog’s alarm. However, they soon found a secret button, which, when pressed, revealed a false floor in the vehicle’s boot, that contained the contraband drugs. The Local Police also found the suspected criminals’ business cards, suggesting that they worked “on request” for their clients in the Costa Blanca party city.

Sacked sex-act policeman showed videos to woman

A disciplinary hearing heard that PC Leach filmed himself performing a sex act

A POLICE officer has been sacked for sending videos of himself, performing a sex act in his uniform, to a “vulnerable” woman. Christopher Leach, 37, was dismissed for an “improper sexual relationship” with the woman he met while working. The divorcee admitted filming two videos in the toilets of his police station, while in uniform, saying it gave him a “thrill”, reported Wales Online. A disciplinary hearing was told that PC Leach filmed himself performing the act inside a Cardiff police station, in the district of Cathays. He then sent the videos to the 35-year-old woman, after working his shifts as a uniformed police constable. PC Leach, who admitted sending the messages, denied filming them while on duty. He told a misconduct hearing that he filmed the explicit videos before his shift started, kept them on his phone, and sent them to the woman, if she asked. After being caught, he told senior officers that when he was unable to see her, they would communicate by sending explicit messages and videos to each other. The hearing learned that the officer came into contact with the woman because of his police work, and that she was vulnerable to an abuse of trust or power. PC Leach, who had worked for the force for five years, denied misconduct. But he was dismissed without notice by a disciplinary panel.

A LORRY driver, accused of being involved with the deaths of 39 migrants, has pleaded guilty to plotting to assist illegal immigration. Robinson, a 25-year-old known as Mo, is charged with the manslaughter of a group of men, women and children, all found dead in a refrigerated trailer. The Northern Ireland man was appearing at the Old Bailey, via video link from East London’s Belmarsh Prison, for a plea hearing. He was not asked to enter a plea to 41 other charges, including 39 counts of manslaughter. The frozen bodies of eight

females and 31 males were discovered in the trailer on 23rd October, attached to his Scania cab, in an Essex industrial park in Grays. The victims were later identified as coming from various Vietnam provinces, the youngest being two boys, aged 15. The accused, wearing a light-blue sweater and tan trousers, spoke to confirm his identity and British nationality. During the hearing, before Mr Justice Edis, he admitted conspiracy to assist unlawful immigration, between 1st May, 2018 and 24th October, 2019. The charge states that he plotted with others “to do an act or series of acts, which facilitated the commission of a breach of immigration law by various persons”.

He also admitted acquiring criminal property, namely cash, on the same dates. The defendant, of Laurel Drive, in Craigavon, Northern Ireland, was not asked to enter pleas to other charges, including 39 counts of manslaughter. He is charged with conspiracy to commit human-trafficking offences, between 1st May 2018 and 24th October 2019. The details of that charge state: “He arranged or facilitated the travel of other persons into the UK, with a view to their being exploited.” He was also charged with transferring criminal property and was remanded into custody until a further hearing, on 13th December.

Shattering demo blow for wealthy Tesla boss TESLA chief Elon Musk saw more than 75% of a billion dollars wiped off his fortune, following the botched launch of his latest electric vehicle.

Shares in the firm slid following the bungled unveiling of the pick-up truck, which had its supposedly-unbreakable glass window shat-

ter twice during a demo! Needless to say, the demonstration was a complete flop. The so-called stunt came after Musk had bragged about the strength of the glass on his futuristic, stainless-steel-skinned Cybertruck, which was brought on stage amid flashing lights, lasers and flames. Musk bragged: “You want a truck that’s really tough, not fake tough. You want a truck you can take a

sledgehammer to; a truck that won’t scratch; doesn’t dent!” To prove it, he then ordered an employee to strike the door with a sledgehammer, resulting in no damage. But then, they threw a metal ball at the driver’s side-windows, which splintered! A shaken Musk said: “Oh my f****** God.” Needless to say, his boast has certainly shattered the multi-billionaire’s bank balance!

New adventures and old foes to celebrate Doctor Who return

IT has been a long wait, but the TARDIS is finally about to return to our homes. Doctor Who sat out most of 2019, the last episode to air being the New Year’s Day special “Resolution,” which brought back the Daleks. At last, though, Season 12 is upon us, and this first teaser trailer promises that we can expect some familiar foes and brand-new adventures, for Jodie Whittaker’s 13th Doctor and her friends in 2020. Season 12 began work back in January, but just wrapped last week. Filming encompassed overseas shoots in Tenerife and South Africa, as well as production closer to home in the UK. The producers worked hard to keep most of the season’s secrets under wraps, but they made it official that the Judoon would be returning in the run. The Rhino-headed

monsters first faced off against David Tennant’s Time Lord back in 2007. Photos on set have also confirmed that the Daleks will be making another comeback, though there’s a belief that this could be part of filming for a special to come after the conclusion of Season 12, perhaps in Christmas 2020 or New Year’s 2021. If they’re planning that far ahead, that would explain why the process took almost the entire year. But the hard work looks to have paid off now. Of course, Whittaker will again be joined by her faithful companions, Yaz Khan (Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh). In season 11, the three human time-travellers were just as much the leads of the show as the Doctor herself, so we’d also expect this to continue, as well. And we’ve been promised that Yaz, in particular, will get more to do. Doctor Who Season 12 arrives in the new year, at last!

Holiday Brit father drowns on night out

BRITISH father Andrew Wallace drowned in a Benalmadena marina while holidaying with pals on the Costa del Sol.

The 54-year-old, from Bolton, become separated from his mates on a night out. His body was found in Benalmadena by a local sailor, who had gone to prepare his boat for the town’s marina. The Lancashire family man’s death is not believed to be suspicious, although a local judge has been carrying out a routine investigation, according to the SunOnline. Andrew was first reported missing last Saturday morning, after disappearing

hours earlier. He was set to fly home on Sunday with his group of friends, who notified the National Police of his disappearance. An autopsy showed that Andrew had sustained chest and arm injuries, because, it was assumed, he tried to pull himself out of the water. Andrew’s brother, nephew and son are believed to have travelled to Spain to organise having his body repatriated. Meanwhile, tributes have flooded in for the Bolton man, who has been described as “one in a million”. Jade Glendening, one of many people paying her respects, said: “Rest in peace Andy Wallace. Lovely man. Sending lots of love to the family.”

Chef Gary Rhodes dies at 59 in Dubai

GARY RHODES, the celebrity chef known for his spiky hair and passion for British cuisine, has died at the age of 59 while working in Dubai.

A family statement said: “He died on Tuesday with his beloved wife Jennie by his side. The Rhodes family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of beloved husband, father and brother, Gary Rhodes OBE. “The family would like to thank everyone for their support and ask for privacy during this time.” Gary, born in south London in 1960, grew up in Kent and trained at Thanet Technical College. His first professional job was at the Amsterdam Hilton, where he began to experiment with nouvelle cuisine. And he opened his first restaurant in 1997 and was made an OBE in 2006. His TV work included appearances on Masterchef, Hell’s Kitchen and his own series, Rhodes Around Britain. He was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2008. Gary ran two restaurants in Dubai: Rhodes W1 and Rhodes Twenty10. Jaideep Bhatia, PR director

of the Grosvenor House Dubai, which housed Rhodes W1, said: “Gary was working until the day he died.” Gordon Ramsay led the tributes on Twitter, writing: “We lost a fantastic chef today in Gary Rhodes. He was a chef who put British Cuisine on the map. Sending all the love and prayers to your wife and kids. You’ll be missed.” Jamie Oliver added on Instagram: “Gary was a fantastic chef and an incredible ambassador for British cooking. “He was a massive inspiration to me as a young chef. He re-imagined modern British cuisine with elegance and fun. Rest in peace Chef.” Great British “Bake Off” winner Candice Brown tweeted: “So, so sad to hear about Gary Rhodes. His banana and syrup loaf was the first thing I baked all on my own. The pages are stuck

together with syrup. So much love to his family.” Ainsley Harriott added: “So sad to hear the news about Gary Rhodes. A true culinary icon and a lovely man. Sending my love and thoughts to his wife Jennie and their boys. RIP, my friend.” In a statement, Grosvenor House Dubai and Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa, where Rhodes worked, said: “The team are devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Chef Gary Rhodes OBE. “Not only has the industry lost a true culinary legend, but we have also lost an inspirational human-being and a very dear friend. “No words can express our sadness at Gary’s death, or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rhodes family.”

‘Drug-related’ Brit is shot dead by assassin

THE identity of a British businessman, gunned down outside his villa, has been revealed as Peter Andrew Williamson, 39, from Salford. He was shot dead at around 3.15pm as he parked his Audi, after returning from the gym last Thursday. Assassins fired seven bullets at him when he arrived outside his home, in the Riviera del Sol urbanisation, near La Cala de Mijas. One shot hit him in the heart and killed him instantly, before some 10 police turned up at the luxury address. Original reports suggested that the suspected killer who was of “Arabic origin” sped off from the murder scene, in Calle Ofrebres, in a getaway

car. This has not yet been confirmed, but police said there had been no arrests yet. A Guardia Civil spokesperson told the Olive Press online newspaper: “There was a shoot-out involving firearms in the Riviera del Sol urbanisation. “Emergency services arrived

and gave CPR to the victim but they could not save him.” Local daily paper Diario Sur claimed that police were working on the theory that the hit was drugrelated. It added that Williamson had been arrested by police in March for his alleged role in shipping cannabis out of Malaga. One neighbour also told the Olive Press: He might have been involved in the drug trade.” Earlier, after the shooting, those close to Williamson, who was nicknamed Snaggle, paid tribute to him. “My caring beautiful nephew little Peter,” wrote his aunt, Carol Williamson Moores. “Taken from us in horrible circumstances. Gone too soon. Love you Snaggle. Always in my heart. Will never be forgotten.”

Brits top list of foreign Red Sky TV series to feature Arona on TV house-buyers in Spain BRITONS lead the way for being foreign house-buyers in Spain, accounting for 14.27% of sales to non-Spaniards in the third quarter of the year, having bought 2,160 properties.

According to figures from the College of Registrars, the French represented the second-largest foreign group acquiring property in the country (8.4%), followed by Germans (6.6%), Belgians (6.17%), Moroccans (6.05%) and Romanians (5.83%). Property purchases by nonnationals in Spain in July, August and September represented 12.5% of the total, which was a higher proportion than in the previous two quarters of 2019. However, the number of sales in the third quarter, adding up to 15,150, was down on the 16,000 recorded between the beginning of

April and the end of June. By province, Alicante registered the highest proportion of house sales to foreign buyers in the third quarter, at nearly 42%. Tenerife capital Santa Cruz clocked the second highest (32.6%) and Malaga the third (28.8%). The region with the greatest percentage of non-Spanish

house-buyers was the Balearic Islands (28.1%), followed by the Valencian Community (25.8%). The Canary Islands had the third-highest (23.7%), with Murcia one place behind (21.5%), and, some way back in fourth and fifth spot were Cataluña and Andalucia, with 12.7% and 12% respectively.

Cowboy builder not a breath of fresh air

A BUILDER is believed to have fled to the UK with thousands of euros, paid to him by an expat to fit airconditioning in her new, dream home. Expat Nicola Brookes claims she is owed €1,709 by Air Care Gibraltar director Andrew Maddison, who has returned to the UK. The Casares resident in Malaga has called in police to probe the case, after the former Duquesa-based builder suddenly upped

sticks. Nicola also says she had to spend €700 on legal fees, as well as changing the locks. However, this was firmly denied by Phillip Charlton, a so-called “accounts manager” of the firm, who threatened her to stop spreading ‘malicious rumours’. The problems came in August, after she had paid 50% of the quote up front. “He failed to return to do the job,” she told online newspaper Olive Press. “He is a total nightmare.” Since leaving Spain in September, the 55-year-old plumber appears to have

set up two new businesses in Hampshire. When contacted, he insisted the claims were “entirely false”, and that he was suing Brookes for slander. He added he no longer owned Air Care Gibraltar and insisted the company’s new boss had offered to complete her installation, which she had turned down. “She refused and then started slandering me everywhere, but it had nothing to do with me, once the company was sold,” he stressed. But despite his claims, he still appears to be the director of the La Linea-based business.

PART of the Netflix television series “Red Sky” will be filmed in Arico during December, and the municipality could be featured throughout the series. “Sky Rojo” is produced by Vancouver Media SL, creators of “The Paper House”, and will be distributed by Netflix in what promises to be a new global success. The series, created by Álex

Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, and directed by Eduardo Chapero-Jackson and Javier Quintas, has an international cast, headed by Verónica Sánchez (“El Embarcadero”), Cuban actress Yany Prado (“The double life of Estela Carrillo”) and Argentine actress and singer Lali Espósito (“Floricienta”, “Sweet Love”, “Almost Angels”). The cast is completed by Asier Etxeandia (“Pain and Glory”, “Velve”, “The Bride”), Miguel Ángel Silvestre (“Sense8”) and Enric Auquer (“Perfect Life”).

You’ll still be quids in, shopping at Poundland HOW much does any item cost at Poundland? The oncesimple answer from the discount retailer, which revolutionised the high street, isn’t as easy as you’d think.

Everything in Poundland will no longer cost £1, the discount retailer has announced, in a major shift for the brand. The company plans to launch products for under and over £1, as it moves away from its iconic, single-price structure. The retailer already sells some items for 50p under occasional “manager’s specials”, and it also introduced pricier items for £2 and £5 in 2017. However, Poundland will now have even more discounted items, as well as prices in excess of £1. Barry Williams, managing director of Poundland, said: “We promise customers amazing value and we are committed to fulfilling that promise on the widest range of items. “While threequarters of the products we offer will still be £1, it’s important that we look to broaden our ranges elsewhere, whether above or below £1. “Our customers are among

the savviest in the country. We know that and it’s why we’re moving at the pace they dictate, to become the simple price-retailer they want us to be.” He added: “The new prices will be trialled in stores in the Midlands before potentially rolling out nationwide if successful. The move to more flexible pricing should give Poundland potential scope to deliver a more varied, and, arguably, stronger value proposition.” Clive Black, a retail analyst at stockbroker Shore Capital, said in a note to clients: “If rolled out across its estate, then the competitive intensity within the discount channel could intensify a notch. “That is something, no doubt, the value-based supermarkets will also be keeping an eye on.” Black said the pricing shift coincided with Poundland rolling-out clothing at its stores, most of which retail for more than £1.

Helping Hands

Proud Liz offers her own Helping Hands Liz Montague with Virag, Balint Horvarth and his partner

LIZ Montague, leader of the children’s charity Helping Hands, had a busy time last Thursday, distributing €4,000 to worthy causes, after raising over €8,400 at the organisation’s’ 10th anniversary dinnerdance the previous weekend. She handed over €1,000 to Balint Horvarth, whose daughter Virag is suffering from Dock8, a rare, life-threatening disease, which has to be monitored regularly at Candelaria Hospital. It is an immunodeficiency syndrome, and most youngsters need specialist treatment to get beyond 18, which is Virag’s age. The cash will go towards the cost of the teenager’s daily visits by car to the hospital, where she receives treatment. “She has been unwell for many months, and it is

incredibly sad to see her so poorly,” said Liz. “I hope the donation will help the family get her to and from the hospital regularly.” If anyone would also like to support the family financially, please go to https://www. gofundme.com/f/1olc9jp1yo Helping Hands also donated a similar sum to Aaron Banister, a brave youngster who is battling Duchenne Disease from his wheelchair… usually with a smile on his face for everyone, and a song if there’s a microphone handy! Also, €2,000 was given to Yanes Academy to help inspire more youngsters to join the Academy’s hairdressing courses. Finally, at the end of her busy day, Liz gave a €2,000 donation to the Happy to Help fellow charity, which, like Helping Hands, also supports underprivileged families in need. The tireless charity worker added: “We have always had fabulous support, and I have updated our charity accounts. The overall total to date is €315,000… an incredible amount over 10 years!”

Christmas stresses! WE would like to remind owners to give extra care and be aware of their pets’ behaviour, over the festive period. There are a lot of different people, noises and activities, that may cause stress to your pet. Please do not leave them alone for more than four hours. It is a well-known fact that pets can suffer more stress, at this time. The refuge will closed from 22nd December to the 2nd January, inclusive, for the Christmas period. Presents for the doggies! Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free. They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please never let your dog breed. He was born with the stone, and it’s possible he may develop another one, but a special diet will reduce the risk of this happening. He also needs special, filtered, lowmineral water. purchase clothes, food and other necessary items, as soon as I arrive in Manila. All donations and purchases will be documented, and posted on my Facebook page. Wine and Dine

29th November -5th December 2019

THE recent Londonbased Wines from Spain Awards 2019 reveals the top-100 favourites among British experts, and three whites have been given prizes. During a blind testing, oenologists, or “Masters of Wine”, as they are known in the UK, named three brands from as many bodegas from the 2018 crop. And one of them is available “on tap”. The white which won “best value for money” was the Castelo de Medina Verdejo 2018, from the Castelo de Medina wine merchants’ and using the Verdejo grape variety. “Best newly-discovered” white was Pansa Blanca 2018, from the Raventós de Alella bodega. And best premium white was Malvasía Seco Colección 2018, which comes from the oldest wine merchants in the Canary Islands: Bodegas El Grifo, in Lanzarote. “El Grifo” translates as “the tap”, meaning the range known as “El Grifo Seco” means, effectively, “dry tap”. But there must be plenty of it flowing because it is

one of the most-exported Spanish wines to the UK, and is well-known throughout the Canary Islands and the mainland. El Grifo’s Malvasía 2018 is pale-yellow in colour, with green, shimmering flecks when held under the light, and floral aromas such as saffron and jasmine and notes of “stone fruit” such as apricots and peaches, with plenty of volume and a

long finish, is said to be ideal for accompanying fish and seafood. Its unique flavour comes from its grapes, grown in the volcanic, ash-covered territory which forms the landscape in the La Geria valley, Lanzarote (pictured), where the El Grifo bodega is based. El Grifo, founded in 1775, means it is now 244 years old, and one of Spain’s 10 oldest

wine merchants. Whether it is Britain’s favourite, or just that of the “Masters of Wine” in London, will depend largely upon subjective tastes, and also on the price! Residents in the UK are used to paying far more for their wine than anyone has to in Spain. But apart from special occasions, most Brits would seek out as much of a bargain as possible without

compromising on quality. In this case, El Grifo is a double hit, and, though up to five times the price of a bottle of Spain’s cheap, but decent, supermarket plonk, the online price of the awardwinning premium Malvasía Seco Colección 2018 comes in at €14.50. That’s far from breaking the bank in Spain, and only slightly above average in the UK.

By Val Sainsbury EXPERTS are warning parents to be careful when buying food and drinks for their kids. Researchers at the University of Glasgow found that a lot of children’s food and drinks, such as fruitbased snacks, juices, yogurts, cereals, and ready-to-eat meals marketed as “healthy” in the UK, are not as healthy as claimed. The researchers found that of the 332 products investigated from supermarkets, 41% were less healthy than they were marketed to be. Apart from making health claims, these products sometimes used cartoons, toys, and other such promotions, to attract young consumers. They noted that parents trying to feed their children healthy foods were being deceived by food labels

www.canarianweekly.com 29th November -5th December 2019

Marketing ploys affect kids’ health claiming the products are nutritious, but which were actually packed with sugar or salt. Such products, most of which were fruit-based drinks and snacks, had labels that said: “No added sugars.” Many products also made claims about containing “one-of-five-a-day” fruits and vegetables, but most did not contain the recommended portion size of 80g. The researchers warned that such health claims have created a “health halo”, preventing parents from realising that many such snacks are full of sugar. They also warned that the heavy use of cartoons as a marketing ploy have greatly contributed to the childhood obesity crisis. The researchers found that cereal bars had the highest content of saturated fat and sugar, while cereals had the most salt. Additionally, fruit snacks were found to have the highest sugar content, averaging 48g per 100g. Most fruit snacks also made the fivea-day claim, which could

be misleading or confusing for parents, and 42% of the products tested said they had at least one portion of five-aday of fruits or vegetables. However, three quarters of those did not really contain what they claimed. There is no exact portion size recommended for children, but 62.3% of products, which made the claim, did not even contain 40g of fruits or vegetables. With regards to fruit juices, the serving size for most exceeded the recommended 150ml for fruit juice. Yet, the fruit and vegetable portions for most products did not meet the recommended portion size. Additionally, almost a

quarter of the products, mostly fruit-based drinks and snacks, claimed no added sugars in them, but half had concentrated juice or fruit puree as added ingredients. This could mislead consumers, who might not realise that they were still loaded with natural sugars, that could also contribute to weight gain. “Pre-packed foods, targeted at children, can be consumed as part of a ‘healthy’ diet, yet their health and nutrition claims remain questionable,” said the researchers. The researchers stressed the need for stricter regulations for food labelling, marketing techniques and product

content, to lessen the risk of obesity, especially now that childhood obesity has become endemic. The consumption of less-nutritious foods may affect children’s health, in the long run. Today, one-in-ten children is already obese by the time he or she reaches the age of five. This increases to one-infive children, by the time he or she enters secondary school. In fact, childhood obesity has been recognised as being one of the most-serious, public-health challenges of the 21st century. Obese children are at risk of having almost every major system of their bodies harmed. Obesity can damage their heart, lungs, muscles, bones, digestive tract and kidneys. It can also disrupt the hormones that control blood sugar and puberty, as well as take a heavy toll on social and emotional health. Furthermore, overweight or obese children are more likely to be overweight or obese in adulthood, which can raise their risk of disease and disability, later in life.

of time, because they do not check the levels, which is the owner’s responsibility. If you drive for long periods without oil, you can severely damage the head gasket or the pistons. When, and if, they break, the repairs can

be extremely costly. Costings in these circumstances often cannot be given until the engine is stripped, to see the precise damage that has been caused. A car service can involve many component checks, and, at Motorworld, we offer three levels of servicing. Main dealers and independent garages have their own schedules, but the amount of component checks can be upwards from 40 points. Whilst a service is not a legal requirement, it is highly recommended. Some people may ask whether a service improves a car’s performance. The short answer is, likely, yes. Having clean oil in your engine means that the performance is likely to contribute to an engine’s life. So, what happens if you don’t change oil for a long time? This can cause engine components to warp or wear out. Eventually, the engine is likely to stop, completely.

Servicing your car

By Emma

from Motorworld

REGULAR car servicing may seem to be an expense you put at the back of your mind, but, in the long term, it can actually save you money. Having your car regularly serviced can make the difference towards its smooth running, and fuel efficiency, and reduce the risk of an unexpected breakdown. The service schedule of your car is normally determined by the manufacturer’s guideline. If followed correctly, it can save you money, although, if the recommendation is for every 10,000 kms for example, and you have done 10,500kms, this won’t be a major issue.

Servicing can identify early signs of problems, such as adverse wear on your brakes or tyres, and potential small oil or water leaks. If your car has a service light and it is on, it’s the car’s way of saying: “Hey, I need a review.” If we

feel unwell or off colour, we would normally seek help from a medical expert, and the same applies to your car. One of the major issues we come across is when people drive their vehicles with little or no oil, for extended periods

CD Tenerife

Rejuvenated CD Tenerife earn three valuable points

AFTER Tenerife’s eight weeks without a win, the new coaching staff encouraged the blanquiazul team to react accordingly, during their visit to Sporting.

And how they responded, with goals from Suso and Dani Gómez in a fruitful second-half. Sesé Rivero, his coaching staff, and the CDT players, brought light to a sad week last Friday with a muchneeded victory at the El Molinón stadium, proving that this team are not dead. Sporting started the stronger and pressed hard, looking for gaps in a nervy Tenerife team, who had suffered poor results, and the sacking of coach Aritz López Garai, the previous week. But the defence stood strong against Sporting’s attacking trio of Rivero, Medina and León, and each ball was cleared without thinking. Each time keeper Ortolá was involved, he cleared eve-

ry attack quickly with a long ball, to ease any pressure. Sporting had their first real chance in the 16th minute with a cross from Djurdjevic on the left wing, which found Aitor García, but his shot was blocked by Moore. Tenerife had not been too troubled until then, when Ortolá decided to return to the Garai way of playing, and released a ball which the Asturian team intercepted in the danger zone. Some 25 minutes had gone, and the signal was clear for Sporting: they would have to increase the pressure! For Tenerife, it was all about concentration. Moore tried to make something happen down the left wing, leaving a gap behind him, and a loose ball found Aitor García, already knowing which flank to attack. Sporting’s striker got into the Tenerife area and cut past Muñoz, but his shot forced a good save from Ortolá. At this point, nothing had been seen of Lasso because, every time he got

the ball, two or three Sporting players were on him. Nahuel, on his birthday, hadn’t been in the game either, while Malbasic had barely touched the ball, and Sporting keeper Mariño could have stayed in the dressing room! At the end of the first half, Tenerife had done well to keep the score at 0-0, because Sporting had not taken advantage of their disastrous first 45 minutes. However, the second half was completely different. It is not known what Sesé Rivero said to his players during the break, but they returned to the Asturian turf with a different attitude, coming out more focused. Suso and Borja Lasso linked up to attack the Sporting defenders of Pedro Díaz and Valiente, and, for the first time, they tested the home goalkeeper. This passageway came to fruition in the 57th minute when Nahuel was brought down on the edge of the 18-yard box. The referee wasn’t happy with the chal-

lenge and consulted VAR, awarding Tenerife a penalty and sending off Marc Valiente, despite much protesting from the Sporting players. In this situation, there’s no better man than Suso Santana to step up and inflict maximum pain, as he struck the penalty high, into the left-hand corner, to put Tenerife ahead. Suddenly, Sporting were behind, with a 10-man team and very angry home fans, after the VAR decision. Coach José Alberto reacted by taking off midfielder Javi Fuego, and replacing him with a faster, more attacking Álvaro Traver. What the home coach did not count on was that Tenerife were not prepared to roll over. As the Asturian team continued looking for the equaliser, CDT were taking full advantage of the extra man by attacking Mariño’s goal. Then, Tenerife won a corner, which was played across the goal, and Javi Alonso got the ball and fed

it to Dani Gómez, who had come on for Malbasic. He dribbled the ball to find a better angle, and released an unstoppable shot, which found the far corner of the net for a great goal, to make it 2-0 after 70 minutes. With another 20 minutes left, it proved too much for the home team, and Tenerife went on to dominate the remaining time. To ensure there were no unpleasant surprises in the last few minutes, Sesé Rivero took off Suso and strengthened his defence, giving a debut to Mauro dos Santos, as well as winger Elliot, playing his first minutes in the League. At the final whistle, it was job done for CD Tenerife. It was a valuable win and some stability, after a difficult few weeks. But tomorrow (Saturday), they have a tough home game against second-placed Almeria. They are not out of trouble, by any means, but morale is everything in sport, and this will have lifted everyone.

The menace of Dennis! DIVISION 1 is really coming alive, and Dennis is proving a menace to the opposition, but you don’t need my opinion. Here’s the quote from Duncan, on the Facebook page:

Gaffers Hollywood 8 Scooters A 0 “Some great darts by Gaffers. We were outplayed: Dennis, 170 check-out with 18-dart game: Joe, 15dart game, great to watch. Tony had a chance for 126 check-out; missed double 3 and bust good food. Great night. Thanks Gaffers, and good luck for the rest of the season.” Call me lazy, but with such good quotes on Facebook, which say it all, why should I try to compete with them? Mad Hatters 2, Pas O Nadas A 6 Trebles to Pas O Nadas, 180 for Wayne Pas O Nadas. “That was one tough game, could have been 4-4, 3-5 or 5-3, hitting a double wins games. “Luckily, we eventually hit a couple more than them. Great night, great food and a lot of laughs. Shame we only play you three times a season. There was only one 3-0 result, so not quite as one-sided as it might appear. Waterfall 1 v Pas O Nadas Int 7 Some great darts, in between some very poor darts, 118 finish for Santi Pas O Nadas. Barry played exceptionally well to win the first game. Good laugh all round. Thanks the Waterfall. Sandys Bookie Boys 7 Emerald B 1 This was slightly

closer than the bare result, with a few 3-2s, but no doubting the better team. The weakened Emerald B team are struggling, but still had a great night, even if they did lose 7-1. Loch Inn Bullseyes 3 Ourplace Playboys 5 Can’t tell you much about this one. It was hard work just getting the result, but Pablo hit a 180. Suters 20:30 Crew v The Pub (postponed) Division 2 had some closer games, but they weren’t at Club Activo, who faced a visit from Clouseau’s. Activo won the first eight legs, then Clouseau’s had to give away the next game, because of a shortage of players, which meant they were 5-0 down, without reply. But Clouseau’s gave it a good shot, and won a couple of legs, before going down to an unfortunate 8-0 defeat. Naughty Nautas 4 Sundowners 4 Sundowners took a 3-1 lead, but Nautas fought back to 3-3, only to lose the lead again in the 7th. That left them chasing a draw in the team game, and they did what was needed, to finish 4-4. Emerald Lounge 5 Ourplace Breakways 3 The Emerald took a 3-1 lead, before the fightback began, and Breakaways had a chance of the draw in the trebles, but in-form Emerald took it to seal a 5-3 win. Pas’O’Nadas 4 Marilyns B 4 Apparently, there was some good scoring from both teams, and again it came down to the trebles. Marilyns took it, to level the match.
