Loro Parque and partners in Bye Bye Plastic project

Continued from Front

The inauguration, which took place in the University of La Laguna’s Auditorium (ULL), was attended by more than 500 people. Loro Parque Fundación and the Universidad de La Laguna have now joined forces in their battle against the use of plastic, to lessen the effects of climate change. The two institutions, fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Objectives, have taken part in the presentation of the project “BYE BYE PLASTIC”, an initiative designed to raise awareness among the entire population, for the damage caused by nonbiodegradable waste in nature. In addition to other authorities and collaborating associations there, the event was also attended by Rosa María Aguilar, the ULL rector; Professor Victoria Martín Osorio; Enrique Arriaga, first Vice-President of Tenerife Cabildo; Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, Mayor of San Cristóbal de La Laguna; María Candelaria González Morales, General Director of Educational Centres, Infrastructure and Promotion of the Canarian

Government; Wolfgang Kiessling, President of the Loro Parque Company, and Christoph Kiessling, VicePresident of the Loro Parque Company and President of Loro Parque Fundación. For her part, Rosa Aguilar, Rector of the host centre, pointed out that in 2017, the two convening entities signed a general catalogue of measures, from which some

research projects arose. One of those was in the area of industrial engineering, to discover how noise pollution affects cetaceans, led by Professor Fernando Rosa. Another was in the field of zoology on marine mammals, led by Professor Alberto Brito. This artistic representation of the Foundation is part of the actions against single-use plastic, carried out in all the

facilities of the Loro Parque Company. In this way, thanks to the strategy’s implementation, more than 30 tons of this harmful material have been eliminated since the beginning of 2018, stresses the Loro Parque Fundación President. And for the manufacture of this consciousness-building piece of art, sculpture creator

Paolo Bonano was inspired by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria artist Néstor MartínFernández de la Torre. For this purpose, he has, mostly, used cans, bottles and plastic lids. Through these actions, the intention is to reinforce the commitment to promote the search for solutions to keeping our planet cleaner, and to raise awareness of the problem faced by the oceans and the different species inhabiting them, with particular emphasis on the effects of marine litter. With all this, Loro Parque Fundación again highlights that the accumulation of plastics in the oceans affects marine biodiversity in a terrible way. According to figures from the United Nations, presented at the session by Foundation President, Christoph Kiessling, 13 million tons of plastic seep into the ocean each year, which causes, among other damages, the death of 100,000 marine species. In addition, it is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean. “All of this makes the role of wildlife conservation centres essential in protecting species for future generations,” added Kiessling.

Chayofa roundabout Helicopter rescues crater-fall woman a blessing for drivers

AT long last, after years of complaints from local Chayofa motorists, Arona Council has agreed to build a much-needed roundabout.

It will enable direct access into Chayofa from the TF-28, saving drivers the additional journey to La Camella. Land required for the construction is under compulsory purchase, but the Council now has all the relevant papers to begin

work. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena agrees that the delay has been too extensive. But he believes the present situation will ease in the following months, with the new roundabout serving local traffic at last.

A HELICOPTER from the Canarian Search and Rescue Emergency Services was summoned to help rescue a 69-year-old woman, who had fallen into a volcanic crater in La Palma, known to many as Caldera de Taburiente. The accident happened near a camp site at playa de Taburiente, in the El Paso municipality. A call was made to the emergency services and the helicopter was dispatched

instantly because of where the woman had fallen. The caller told the operator that the woman had fallen and hurt a leg. But once the helicopter arrived, she was winched on to it safely, before being flown to the Hospital General’s helipad in La Palma. A medical team awaited her arrival, to transfer her to the emergency department, where her injury was treated.

Worn-out migrants treated by tourists as they reach land

6th December -12th December 2019

TOURISTS and sunbathers in Gran Canaria joined forces with emergency workers to give water, food and clothes to migrants in Gran Canaria.

They had seen them land in a rickety boat on the rocky shores of Aguila beach, in San Bartolome de Tirajana. Onlookers were stunned to see the 23 migrants, including three children and a pregnant woman, exhausted and cold, and some, seemingly, in a state of shock after weathering the Atlantic. They were given thermal blankets and towels by rescue workers when, finally, they were able to rest on the beach. Red Cross officials said the migrants, from northern and sub-Saharan Africa, told them of six days spent navigating rough waters, at times. “It was a really tough journey,” said Jose Antonio Rodriguez of the Red Cross. The group included 12 men, eight women and three children, six of the group being treated at a local hospital. But, thankfully, none was reported to be in a serious condition. Sunseekers, ranging from tourists visiting the island to locals, then got cracking after the boat arrived, added Jose. “They were the first ones to help out, giving them food, water and milk for the babies after they saw how hungry they were. They also gave clothing because the migrants were soaking wet.”

In the extraordinary incident, one woman cradled a weary migrant in her lap as another, swimsuit-clad woman gave her water. Another used his beach towel to keep her feet warm. Photographs show the migrants wrapped in goldcoloured, emergency blankets and laying on the rocky beach, as rescue-service members provided them with bottles of water and sandwiches. British holidaymakers Gavin and Bernadette Rodgers witnessed the landing while on a dolphin-watching trip during their pre-Christmas break to the island, off the north-west coast of Africa. The pair had paid 30 euros for the trip, which set off from Puerto Rica on Gran Canaria with a small group of German and British tourists. An hourand-a-half into the two-hour trip, no one had seen a single

dolphin. “We were all scanning the sea, almost giving up hope,” said Mrs Rodgers. “Suddenly, a crew member came up on deck and said we had drifted very close to the coast of Africa. “They had been alerted by the Coastguard that we needed to be vigilant, in case we encountered a boat from there. “Strangely, my first thought was that we might be about to be kidnapped by armed pirates. But the crewman said No, it was a boatful of immigrants heading for Europe who may have been drifting for days. “I was relieved and gratified, and I thought: ‘We can rescue help these people and bring them to safety.’” This year, by mid-November, some 27,594 migrants had arrived in Spain, according to data from the Interior Ministry.

It was a drop of more than 50% from the same period last year. However, the Canary Islands

has seen a 22% increase in arrivals, with 1,493 migrants appearing so far. Photos: Reuters

Canaries still claim the top winter holiday spot THE Canary Islands, Thailand and Egypt are European holidaymakers’ favourite winter destinations, according to research by TUI Holiday Atlas Winter 2019/20.

They often return to a favourite destination during the winter season, and Gran Canaria ranks first as the top European choice. Tenerife and Lanzarote also rank among the top five, alongside Thailand’s Phuket and Hurghada, in Egypt. Around 27 million guests travel to more than 100 destinations with TUI each year, and the company’s Holiday Atlas also provides an overview of specific preferences. Fuerteventura remains the top destination among German holiday-makers, followed by Hurghada, Las Palmas, Tenerife, and Phuket. By contrast, French travellers have chosen Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, as their top destination this time. British, Irish and Belgian holiday-makers continue to prefer Tenerife.

And as in prior years, Gran Canaria remains the favourite travel destination among Finnish, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish holiday-makers, while Polish travellers are most likely to travel to Antalya, in Turkey. However, the top five destinations of Polish holidaymakers now include Egyptian beach resorts Hurghada and Marsa Alam, as well as Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. Austrian and Swiss holidaymakers also like travelling to more remote destinations. The Austrians’ top destination for a sun-and-beach holiday is the Maldives, while Swiss customers prefer Phuket.

Dutch travellers are also keen to go on a long-haul trip, and their absolute dream destination during the cold season is the Lesser Antilles island of Curaçao. The latest TUI Holiday Atlas shows that the Canaries remain the No.1 travel destination among TUI customers this winter. Egypt has confirmed the comeback it made in last year’s winter season, because nearly all Europeans clearly favour sunshine destinations. The only exceptions are the Dutch, Austrian and German holiday-makers, who are also likely to visit Austria as a winter hideaway.

Second day’s holiday, and pensioner drowns

AN elderly man drowned in front of his wife on the second day of their Lanzarote holiday, an inquest heard. Frank Battison went for a swim in the sea, but he got into difficulty and could not be saved. The coroner’s court heard how Frank, from Roche, Cornwall, had gone swimming off Las Cucharas beach on 12th October 2018. Frank’s wife Susan said in a statement: “On October 11, 2018, me, Frank and my mum flew out to Lanzarote for a 10-day holiday. The following day we went to the beach. At about 12.45pm we went for a coffee. Then, me and mum went for a dip.” The statement added that when she and her mother came out of the water her husband went for a swim. “I looked back and I couldn’t see Frank,” said Mrs Battison. “But I saw

someone, face-down in the water, with a lot of people around him. There was a lot of commotion.” Lanzarote’s Local Police attended the scene, but a doctor told Mrs Battison at 2.35pm that there was nothing more they could do because her husband had died. A post-mortem examination, carried out two days later, showed that there was no sign of a traumatic injury. Cornwall assistant coroner Guy Davies read out Dr Ricardo Gonzales’ report and said: “The findings were no external signs of any physical violence or traumatic injuries. “It says that Frank died a violent death, which might be a mistranslation.” Giving his conclusion, the doctor added: “Frank Battison died on October 12 on Las Cucharas from drowning, while swimming in the sea. “My conclusion is misadventure. The medical cause of death is drowning.”

TITSA card machines a bonus for customers TITSA machines make it easy for passengers

TITSA, the Tenerife Cabildo’s bus company, has installed machines for the sale and recharge of the Ten + card in the Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz bus stations, as well as in the Santa Cruz and La Laguna exchanges.

With these machines, customers can manage their Ten + card autonomously, avoiding queues. The new machines are a complement to the services offered through the web and traditional outlets. In total, the company will install eight points of purchase, recharge and balance inquiry across the island, because, in the coming months, more machines will be placed at Los Cristianos and San Isidro, as well as at the two airports.

Workers with drills NEWS IN BRIEF make it holiday hell for a retired couple

Threat to convicts owing €100m

SANTA CRUZ Mayor Patricia Hernández (above), discussing the €100m debt owed by those convicted in the Las Teresitas case, said that just €100 had been recovered from those convicted, including businessman Antonio Plasencia and the recently-deceased Ignacio González. “They moved money from one place to another, and City Hall looked the other way,” she said. But the defiant Mayor is adamant that the Council will not stop, until, she said: “The convicts of Las Teresitas pay the €100m they owe.”

Police jailed without bail

THE Court of Instruction has sent an Adeje Local Police officer to prison, following his arrest for committing nine crimes, including bribery, extortion, threats and belonging to a criminal organisation. The charges also include damages, prevarication, and the disclosure of secrets, as well as omitting his duty to prosecute criminals. The operation involves two other Local Police officers, who have given statements and are being investigated for extortion, as well as the omission of duty to prosecute crimes. The investigation has been carried out by the Judicial Police Brigade, under the direction of the Magistrate of the Court of Instruction No.4 of Arona.

Hospital work halts parking

CANDELARIA Hospital will begin preparing for work on a new, emergency building in the first half of the month. But it will affect the parking lot in front of the current emergency service. That will remain closed from 5am on Sunday, to enable the work to meet the expected deadlines, before reopening. The university hospital’s management stresses that the new building is one of the main improvements demanded by health professionals and patients. Essentially, it will allow further progress to improve specialised healthcare in emergency cases.

Homeless are still struggling

TWO mobile units to help the homeless on Tenerife streets, one between Candelaria and Santiago del Teide and other one in the Orotava Valley, have already found more than 600 people living in “extreme situations”. This translates to people living outdoors in “sub-housing, caves, ravines or shacks”. But of that number, revealed by Caritas this year, fewer than 300 people have received help.

Electric bikes for police

LA LAGUNA has acquired four electric bicycles for the Local Police and Civil Protection, mainly in the centre of the city. This measure will allow officers to have more immediate and sustainable mobility in the streets of the historic centre.

A RELAXING getaway for Margaret and Brian Burns with holiday agents TUI, was shattered when workers began ripping up their Costa Adeje hotel’s poolside terrace. The couple, both 75, endured five days of noise from pneumatic drills and diggers at the all-inclusive Hovima resort, after spending £2,300 on their holiday. They complained, and later wrote to travel agent TUI. But, after seven months, they were still ignored. Margaret, a retired administrator, said: “I’m recovering from a stroke, and the whole point of the holiday was to have a peaceful, relaxing time. That’s the last thing we got. The noise was horrendous, and the pictures speak for themselves.” The couple, from Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, arrived at the Hovima for a fortnight on 12th April. Margaret, who has two children and five grandkids, added: “This was our third time there because we liked

it so much. “The first week went off without incident, but we couldn’t believe our eyes when we arrived at the pool on the Monday of our second week. “We were on a large terrace, overlooking the main pool, and hundreds of people normally use it. But all of the sunbeds were gone. It had, literally, been turned into a building site! “The noise from an industrial digger was awful, and the sound of pneumatic drills as the whole floor area was dug up was quite something.” She and Brian, a retired printer, complained to the TUI rep, and Margaret said: “We were told the problem was a burst pipe, which didn’t make any sense as we couldn’t see water escaping anywhere. “And no one could tell us when the work would stop. It went on for hours every day, for the last five days of the holiday.” The couple ended up spending as little time as possible at the hotel, and Margaret added: “The events of that last week undid any of the good we got out of the earlier part of the holiday.”

When they got home, she complained at the TUI shop, where she’d booked the holiday, and wrote to the company’s head office. But there was no reply. “I’ve lost count of the visits I’ve made to the branch in Kirkintilloch,” she said. “Initially, staff told me they had logged my complaint and would be in touch when they heard back. “But the last time I inquired, I was told our file had been marked ‘closed’ on their system. I was livid. “To top it all, friends of ours, who had been at the Hovima at the same time, received compensation after a number of exchanges with TUI.” A TUI spokesman said: “We are sorry to hear that Mr and Mrs Burns’ holiday was impacted by the maintenance work taking place at the hotel. “This was, unfortunately, due to a pipe which had burst and needed to be replaced urgently, which is why we were unable to notify the customers prior to travelling. “We will be in touch with the customers directly to offer a gesture of goodwill.”

TENERIFE’S South Hospital, formerly El Mojon, will next year feature 300 new beds and several operating theatres. And the Ministry of Health will also begin its administrative breakaway from the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in 2020. Teresa Cruz, the Canarian Government’s Health Minister, who visited the facilities on Tuesday, announced the news of new beds and operating rooms for the complex, courtesy of the Cabildo. Ms Cruz was accompanied by Cabildo President Pedro Martín and Natacha Sujanani, who manages the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. During the visit, she also met mayors and representatives of municipalities in the southern part of the island. The Canarian Health Minister highlighted the agreement reached with the Cabildo, which will make space for beds and operating rooms, while the Ministry of Health will do the same, guaranteeing

South Hospital to expand with 300 more beds, and many operating theatres

250 residential places for patients dependent on them. The project will involve coordination between the Cabildo and the Ministry for the drafting and execution of the projects, as well as the budget. In addition, the South

Hospital’s split from the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, will be carried out during 2020, which means it will have its own budget allocation. Regarding an improvement to its current facilities, Ms Cruz highlighted the investment in

technical equipment in its day hospital; the strengthening of the Rehabilitation Area; an improvement in the Emergency Department’s Human Resources; the additional specialists, confirming that in 2020 there will be paediatrics and nephrology, the branch of medicine dealing with physiology and diseases of the kidneys. The Health Minister said: “We want to enable this hospital to respond to the demands of the population in the south of the island, taking in a figure of around 500,000 people, including residents and others.” Ms Cruz stressed: “Without the collaboration of the Tenerife Cabildo, it would be impossible to have such a hospital here.” Cabildo chief Pedro Martín

said: “We must make the improvements to hospital services, sought by the Ministry. This joint work we have embarked on will pay off from next year.” He also said: “I’ve been talking about the South Hospital for more than 30 years, but the population has been growing and, in the past, we’ve not been able to provide the services it requires.” But he showed his satisfaction with the current agreement, saying: “It will enable Southern Tenerife to have the health care it requires.” The Ministry also announced that next year’s budget for the South Hospital will be raised to €1m through a parliamentary amendment, to start the planned actions.

MAKING life easier and improving conditions for society, as well as retaining cultural values and promoting the arts and sciences in the Canary Islands, are rewarded every year by a Tenerife radio station. Its Golden Teide Awards go to three winners annually: one to an individual, another to a group, and a third to an institution. Radio Club Tenerife-Cadena SER has already announced this year’s winners, who will collect their prizes in the Adán Martín Auditorium in Santa Cruz, during an evening ceremony next Friday (13th Dec). María Dolores is a dedicated lawyer and politician, considered in 1978 to be one of the “Mothers of the Spanish Constitution” and enshrining human rights in law for the first time, and an indefatigable activist for women’s rights. Radio Club Tenerife said: “We consider it especially opportune right now to highlight María Dolores’ figure and her values in the current context, in which society in general is disillusioned with the mainstream political class. “This rejection is because society considers its representatives do not come up to scratch when it comes to reaching agreements, that allow them to protect our harmonious coexistence, democracy, and the foundations that support these.” María Dolores, born in Tenerife in 1943, is a member of the PSOE (socialists) Federal Committee and was the party’s spokeswoman in Santa Cruz Council from 1987 to 1991. She was also a senate in the national Parliament, representing Tenerife from 1977 to 1979, and MP for the province of Santa Cruz from 1979 to 1996. She was also highly-active in Parliamentary legislative debates, especially in family-related issues, given that she is a family solicitor by profession. It was largely María’s work which led to the divorce rights becoming recognised in Spain; it had been illegal until 1982. María also led changes to the Criminal Code, and, thanks to her campaigning, adultery and couples living together without being married ceased to be crimes. Abortion and use of contraception were decriminalised, abortion regulation was introduced,

Ex-Thomas Cook staff are winners of radio’s Golden Teide Awards

and sentences were set within the norms of the Constitution for crimes against sexual freedom, such as rape, abuse or assault. Radio Club Tenerife has chosen the college in San Cristóbal de la Laguna for this year’s award for its role in “training and educating generations of Canary Islanders, since its founding in 1792”. Also, its growing commitment to equality is clear, says Radio Club Tenerife, since it has recently appointed the second female dean in its history, especially as most Spanish universities have never had a woman in the top job. There were no male candidates for dean, for the first time ever, and a high number of researchers and professors on campus are female. The university currently has over 21,000 students, 13 faculties and schools, and offers over 200 degree qualifications. Until 1989, it was the only Canarian university, its current name given to it in 1927 through the same Royal Decree, or Bill of Law, which split the region into two

provinces. But now it is one of two, the other being the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. La Laguna came 446th in the world in last year’s ranking and 13th in Spain, although it rose to 134 in the world for physics, and sits in the unnumbered 401-500 bracket for maths, as well as making the top 200 for medicine. This year’s US News & World Report placed La Laguna University as top in Spain for space sciences, helped largely by the mammoth telescope and observatory on La Palma, and the presence of the Canarian Astrophysics Institute (IAC), and No.53 out of 250 worldwide. The Group Award went to former Thomas Cook employees, a huge number being based in the Canary Islands. Radio Club Tenerife said Thomas Cook employees received probably the biggest blow of their lives after the company collapsed overnight on 23rd September, leaving a total of 21,000 workers out of a job without warning.

Some of them, Radio Club Tenerife pointed out, had been working for the British travel company for over 20 years. Reports in the UK press have since claimed that some members of the Board of Directors are facing interrogation from MPs, but at least two managers have started crowd-funding to help affected staff. Park UK offered them all a free holiday, while many of those left without jobs have had to use food banks, and borrow money from parents to live. Now, though, husband-andwife team John and Irene Hays, who own Hays Travel, have bought all 555 of Thomas Cook’s high-street shops. So far, they have opened 186, and offered jobs to 2,000 Thomas Cook staff out of the 9,000 based in the UK, who were hit by the firm’s sudden closure. Staff, in some parts of the world, including Britain, were actually kicked out of their hotels the very morning the company collapsed, and many more had no idea how they would get home. But many UK-based branch employees went to work the next morning as usual. Reps in worldwide resorts, including the Canary Islands, donned their uniforms and went on duty. Pilots and cabin crew also reported for business daily, to help panicky tourists who had no idea how to get home. Reps mediated with hotels, demanding the balance of holiday costs or payment for extra nights directly for customers, who had already

paid Thomas Cook in full for their trip. They even handed out Kleenex tissues, and reassuring words to those who were, understandably, becoming hysterical. British holiday-makers, stranded all over the world, including 33,400 in Spain and the Canaries, had nothing but praise for their reps and flight attendants, who carried on working to make life easier for them. Yet they knew they were already unemployed, and would not be paid for their services. The Spanish Government ensured flights to get everyone home, in case the UK was slow to react. It also launched credit schemes of up to €700m to help the tourism industry in the worstaffected areas, and to cover the immediate financial emergency. It also set up a free, legal service so that Spain-based Thomas Cook workers could fight for any unpaid wages or redundancy money, as well as compensation where applicable. On 8th October, exactly 15 days after the firm ceased trading, Spain’s Government confirmed that every Thomas Cook tourist in the country had been repatriated, either by his or her own efforts, or those of the UK. Overall, given their ordeal and how they put customers first, even when they had nothing to lose, practically everyone would agree that Thomas Cook’s staff in the Canary Islands and beyond deserved their Golden Teide Award.

Ex-Villa star’s threesome video could lead to prison ASTON Villa’s former star Antonio Luna, also a Spanish international, has been told by a court that he could be jailed for five years, following his appearance in a “threesome” film.

The 28-year-old Valencian defender, who joined the Premier League side in 2013, is accused of shooting a sex video with a young woman, without her consent. He and his Eibar team mate Sergi Enrich, 29, filmed the tape in April 2016, before the footage went viral in October of the same year. The woman can be heard pleading not to be filmed in the footage, which was captured by another Eibar star, Eddy Silvestre, 27. The two footballers in the video could now be sent down for their actions, after a request by the prosecution in Gipuzkoa, northern Spain. They have already been charged with filming intimate images without consent,

Chorizo ban so healthy for Spain’s car-makers

A SIX-MONTH chorizo ban at Spain’s biggest car-maker has cut employees’ cardiovascular health risks dramatically.

Around 600 workers were used as guinea pigs in a study that forced staff to ditch mortadella and sausage sandwiches for healthier alternatives. In a clampdown on company canteens, staff swapped the highly-processed meats for wholegrain sandwiches, with hummus, sardines or avocado. The initial buttie ban was then extended to incorporate physical exercise and emotional support. Hospital Clinic de Barcelona and the IrsiCaixa AIDS Research Institute conducted the research, which began in April 2018. A total of 300 staff at Seat’s Zona Franca factory in Barcelona, and a further 300 at

its El Prat site, were examined medically, before and after the study. El Prat staff were offered health advice, while researchers implemented several strategies with the Barcelona group. Each participant was given five litres of vir-

gin olive oil a month and 30 grams of nuts a day, in a bid to follow the Mediterranean diet. Workers were also supplied with vouchers for healthy supermarket produce, and seasonal menus were drafted for them.

The outcome was a huge decrease in triglycerides, the main component of body fat, while the “weight and waists” of Seat employees also shrunk. IrsiCaixa director Bonaventura Clotet, a respected medi-

cal doctor, said: “This study has achieved an impact at the metabolic level, through the Mediterranean diet. Now we want to see if, in the microbiome, there is an impact of the Mediterranean diet.”

THE 15th Walk for Life will be held next Sunday (15th December) with funds raised going to genetic research and the Bra and Linfa projects, among other things. Carrera por la vida/Walk for life is now on the international stage, having joined the Think Pink Europe network, under the slogan ‘Close the Gap’. The objective is to bring together the projects in various countries, to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer, swapping experiences and “becoming a powerhouse for change”, as well as knocking on the EU doors. Brigitte Gypen, President of the Carrera por la vida/ Walk for Life foundation, told a press conference on Wednesday: “We are now the Spanish representatives in this network, which has 19 countries as members. It is a watershed moment, which means more work, more commitment and more involvement. But we cannot say no because this is a unique opportunity, and we want to go as far as we can.” The conference was held to announce details of this year’s event, with Health Councillors for Adeje (Amada Trujillo Bencomo) and Arona (Pura Martín Pérez) in attendance, as well as this year’s Grand Marshall, Hilda Siverio, a woman who has overcome double breast cancer. Hilda is also a blogger and a well-known personality in social media, through her blog on Breast Cancer “Sácale una sonrisa al cancer” (Get a smile out of cancer). This year’s Carrera por la vida/Walk for life takes place on 19th December, from 11am, leaving from Siam Mall (Adeje) and finishing along Arona’s Golden Mile. And, said Ms Pérez: “We will have a fantastic send-off with the Adeje volunteer firefighters, and those who are taking part will also receive a special memento of the event.” The money raised this year will go towards the investigation of the BRCA gene, in which cases of breast cancer are detected among members of the same family. The Carrera por la vida/ Walk for life will continue to fund the BRA Project, which donates therapeutic bras to women who have had a mastectomy, and who are not able to afford this specialised underwear, which is most important to post-surgical healing. Among new projects the foundation is supporting is the LINFA, which funds the

buying of special sleeves for those who have swollen arms following surgery. There is also a planned series of physical-activity projects for people after surgery, to help regain their health, and the foundation will also help a small business, which will be making bikinis and swimsuits for women who have had mastectomies. “Our expectations regarding participation in this year’s walk are big, even though the numbers we had in previous years are hard to beat,” Ms Gypen told conference. “We still work to grow every year. She added: “We want to fill the streets with pink wings,” referring to the tradition which has evolved over the years, with people dressingup and wearing pink wings for the walk. Last year, over 5,200 people took part, and a sum of €35,000 was raised. The Grand Marshall for 2019, Hilda Siverio, said: “I will always be by Brigitte’s side. She is really magical, and to be chosen as this year’s walk Grand Marshall is a huge honour and a challenge. “I want to invite everyone to come along and experience the Walk for Life, which is also a song for life, and you really do know that you are not alone… if you are ready to become infected by this magic, come along on 15th December, and you will be back every year”. Amada Trujillo Bencomo said: “We have to take into account the fact that all the projects and programmes

we are developing locally are not funded nationally. But we are involved, and happy to invest time and money to meet the needs of our people. “In Adeje this year, we have attended to 130 people in the Oncology Attention Service, with psychological, social and physical assistance. “Our commitment to the Carrera por la vida/Walk for life foundation is full-time, through different projects, such as the Pink Room, the Swim for Life, the BRA project and, of course, the annual, solidarity walk. “Also next year, we will be promoting a new programme for those undergoing oncology treatment, in conjunction with the Foundation.” The Councillor also stressed the huge importance of early detection, saying: “the best way to fight breast cancer is to get ahead of it.” Arona’s Ms Pérez underlined the importance her Council also gives to the projects and programmes, both in the fight against cancer, and helping patients and their families, from free transport to and from hospitals, to psychological assistance programmes and physiotherapy. But we have to do more Ms Gypen gave details of some new additions the organisers are preparing for this year’s walk, in conjunction with both Town Halls, such as a chance to pay homage to someone you know who has suffered from breast cancer. “We want to applaud their courage and bravery, which

is an example to many, who are going through the worst moments of their lives,” she said. She also announced the continuing commitment to the environment, banning balloons on the walk, as they usually fall into the sea and contaminate it. But she added: “We will have steel bands throughout the walk, buses for those who cannot complete the 4K, and, of course, we will be selling merchandise to add to the fund-raising total.” The President also gave

a reminder that the 2020 calendar, Art for Life, with 12 original works of art, as well as 12 stories in Spanish and English, will be on sale on Monday (9th Dec) from 7pm in Corte Ingles in Santa Cruz. Given the huge success of last year’s Flash mob, we are doing it again, and we want everyone to dance, so there will be a rehearsal on Saturday (tomorrow) in Siam Mall at 7pm, where you can also sign up for the walk”. Funding allocation All money raised helps fund the AMATE cancer association, specifically to fund areola micro pigmentation for women who have had mastectomies; for the Spanish Cancer Association; for the KM Solidarity initiative, which offers free transport for patients needing treatment in different hospitals in other parts of the island, and for an investigation into liquid biopsies. The foundation has also acquired two neuromodulation machines, which, with the help of oncology physiotherapist Raquel Pérez, are used to treat pain and scars. Monies also went towards the BRA project, and more than 250 bras were given to those who have undergone mastectomies, via private businesses and entities. Among the foundation aims is to promote the early detection of breast cancer. The foundation was born out of the personal experiences and concerns of Brigitte Gypen, who, having fought breast cancer herself, decided to set up a solidarity walk. That was 14 years ago, and it has grown year after year, involving thousands of people along the way.

Think Pink Europe spreading rapidly

THINK Pink Europe is a non-profit organisation, created in March 2018 by five European organisations, fighting against breast cancer.

It covers Belgium (Think-Pink), Bosnia-Herzegovina (Think Pink, “Zajedno Smo Jedno”), Greece (Alma Zois), Italy (Susan.G Komen Italia), and Romania (Fundatia Renasterea). Today, the TPE has member-organisations from 19 countries, with three more set to join in January. All across Europe, local breast cancer organisations, hospitals, support groups and governmental organisations work actively on a common objective: eradicate breast cancer. The disease remains the most common type of cancer in Europe, affecting women particularly. Over the last years, it has become clearer that a deeper collaboration is the key to reduce mortality and, hopefully, stop breast cancer once and for all. Think Pink Europe aims at improving and accelerating the exchange of information, and best practices on health care and research. It focuses on reducing disparities to access health-care, as well as closing the health-care gap between European countries.

SPAIN’S Ministry of Justice spokesperson has warned of a rise in the number of “intolerant and extremist” speeches, regarding religious identity. And representatives from Church of Scientology and the Bahá’í Community stress that there should be more equality. According to information published by the Spanish daily Diario de Mallorca, on the 40th anniversary of the Spain’s Religious Freedom Law, the University of the Balearic Islands’ Law Faculty launched a series of conferences with visiting government officials, responsible for inter-religious relations and others from the Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation, as well as representatives from the Church of Scientology and the Bahá’í Community This Religious Freedom Law was the first one approved under a new constitution, drafted in the 1975 Fascist dictator Francisco Franco’s death. At the time of its adoption, the law was unanimously approved. This illustrates the importance given to the regulation of this fundamental right then, as highlighted by the various experts, who participated in the inaugural session of this cycle of conferences, organised by the host university’s Private Law Department. The conference kicked off on 15th November with Ana Gallego, Director- General of International Legal Cooperation, Relations with the Faith denominations and Human Rights of the Ministry of Justice; Mercedes Murillo, the Deputy Director-General of Relations with the Faith Denominations at the Justice Ministry; Inés Mazarrasa, director of the Foundation Pluralism and Coexistence Foundation, and Puerto

García, the Foundation’s deputy director, all in attendance. Catalina Pons-Estel, a professor of Civil Law at the UIB, and an organiser of the event, along with Professor of Ecclesiastical Law, at the Autonomous University of Madrid Marcos González, both stated that religious freedom enjoys a high degree of protection at the legal level in Spain. “There are still challenges at the sociological level, but not so much in the legal framework,” said Gallego, who added: “Everyone needs to be alert to certain speeches, that try to instrumentalise religious identity as part of

an intolerant and extremist discourse.” Gallego went on to say that this was a challenge for all societies. “It can only be stopped by insisting on the public administration of religious fact, with equality between religious denominations, the neutrality of the State, and social diversity from the viewpoint of religion,” he said. The number of religious entities now listed in the Justice Ministry’s special register total 19,271, with more added every year. Some 12,000 are Roman Catholic entities and another 5,000 linked to other large concessions, including 1,700 related to Islam and 3,200

associated with Evangelical Protestants. There are also Churches and Missions of Scientology, the Baha’is, the Church of Latter Day Saints, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Sikhs, Buddhists, Hinduists, and many others. “Religious communities, merely registered in the Register of Religious Entities of the Ministry of Justice of Spain are the vast majority,” said Marcos González, a Director of the Methodological Institute of Ecclesiastical Law. “Although current treatment has improved in recent years, and there is some sort of co-operation, the situation and equal treatment would improve for all if there were no different categories based

on numbers, which would reduce social discrimination as well as radicalisation,” said Iván Arjona, President of the Church of Scientology in Spain, and its European Office for Public Affairs and Human Rights, while speaking to New Europe. Arjona’s comments were supported by Sergio Garcia, the director of the Public Affairs Office from Spain’s Baha’i community, who said: “The handling of ethnoreligious diversity is not only a challenge to strengthen social cohesion and prevent conflicts and the processes of radicalisation, but also an opportunity to use the historical experience of religious groups and communities, which have spent centuries trying to contribute to economic and social improvement. “When involving religious groups and communities in processes linked to public policies, one has to ensure that the work takes the form of collaboration and selfless action, for the common good.” González and Pons-Estel, who told New Europe that the presentations have given the attendees the chance to get to know more about the Church of Scientology and the Bahá’í Community, added: “These religious communities want to have more advantages, and be more visible, and want more co-operation with them from the public authorities as mandated by the Spanish Constitution.”

Avalon celebrates award for ‘Best Funeral Plan Provider’ AVALON Funeral Plans is celebrating a coveted award win after being named ‘Best Funeral Plan Provider’ at the 2019/20 Personal Finance Awards.

Now in its 22nd year, the Personal Finance Awards have long been recognised as a benchmark for excellence in the UK’s consumer-finance market, providing a reflection of the consumer’s choice of top financial providers, over the last two decades. Nominations for the awards are sent in, directly, by the consumer, based on their experience of outstanding products or customer service in the industry. This year, the awards received just over 20,000 votes. With over 25 years’ experience providing funeral plans to more than 70,000 customers across the UK and Europe, Avalon was recognised for its dedication to its customers, as well as the high standard of its service. These qualities are con-

tinuously reflected in the company’s industry-leading customer feedback, with over 2,000 reviews, and a rating of ‘excellent’ on Trustpilot, as well as a fivestar rating on Defaqto, lending justification to the company’s esteemed award win. So trusted is the brand, that someone chooses an Avalon funeral plan, every 10 minutes*. Avalon is the fastest-growing provider of funeral plans in Europe, providing specialist expat plans in Spain, the Canaries, Portugal and Cyprus. Avalon funeral plans are specially designed with British expats in mind, with unique features, compared with other providers. If expats split their time between the UK and the Canaries, an Avalon funeral plan is valid in both countries, so they can choose to have a funeral either in the Canaries, or back in the UK. They also provide local support for customers and their families, working with local, independent Funeral Directors in the Canaries. Their 24/7, English-speaking,

expat bereavement helpline is of vital support for families when the time comes, particularly in countries where the funeral process can be unfamiliar and complicated. For example, funerals in the Canaries can happen within 24-48 hours, and funeral directors can request part or full payment upfront, plus there is the language barrier to contend with. Having an Avalon, expat, funeral plan in place makes planning and paying for a funeral, as an

expat, simple. The award win follows a successful period of growth for the business, under a new, senior-management team led by CEO Susan Stevenson. Speaking about the award win, Susan said: “There are few other industries in which taking care of the customer, their journey and their family, is quite so important. “We like to think we’re different from other funeralplan providers, in that we go the extra mile in helping

customers and their loved ones, when they, perhaps, need it most. “It’s our promise to always put our customers at the centre of what we do, and the fact that we’ve been recognised for our efforts, particularly by such a widelyrenowned awarding body as the Personal Finance Awards, really means the world to us.” Regulated in the UK by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA), Avalon employs more than 200 people at its offices in Cheshire, and across Spain, The Canaries, Portugal and Cyprus. The company is flexible in offering customers three different ways to discuss their requirements, and their range of funeral plans. They can speak to a specialist advisor in the comfort of their own home, or over the phone, or online, 24/7. The £4,300 taxi bill, which made friendly Phil a hero PHIL HAMILTON is a hard-working cabbie for the Belfast company 365 taxis, but passengers, apart from saying “thank you”, now press him for selfies.

They even stop his wife in the supermarket to tell her he’s a “hero”. And it’s all because a good deed he performed for a pal went viral. The 43-year-old cabbie embarked on the longest journey of his life: six countries, totalling 2,522 miles, and all to help his friend in need. Phil travelled all the way to Benidorm to pick up injured friend Jim Moore and take him home, all at the expense of 365 taxis. News of fellow-Newtonabbey man Jim Moore, 58, sent shockwaves through County Antrim when his friends learned that he had gone missing in Benidorm on Friday, 15th November, at 11pm. The shock turned to desperation as here was no news of Jim’s whereabouts for 72 hours. Then a Spanish nurse contacted a friend, via an appeal on the Benidorm community Facebook page. It turned out that Jim had slipped on the stairs to the Acuarium II hotel complex, and needed an urgent ambulance to Vila Joiosa Hospital, where he was placed into an induced coma. He had no documentation on him, which meant the family had no news, until the nurse recognised Jim in a missing-person’s post on social media. But his ordeal was not over,

because when he came round, Spanish doctors ordered him not fly for three months for fear of cabin pressure on his injuries. Phil told the Olive Press from Northern Ireland: “They were very worrying times, but we were absolutely ecstatic when we found out he was in hospital.” “Jim has been a great customer of 365 Taxis, and I often have a wee pint with him at our pub. So when we found out he couldn’t fly for three months, we talked jokingly about sending a taxi to Benidorm. “I said, ‘that’s the way to do it, and all we need is a driver’. Suddenly, all eyes were on me, and how could I turn around and say No?” As soon as he’d left Belfast for Benidorm, the news made national headlines in Britain,

Spain and worldwide. A whopping nine days, 82 driving hours and the taxi meter reading £4,300, Jim was safely home in Newtonabbey with his family. “365 Taxis agreed to cover all the costs, which was

a lovely gesture from our directors,” said Phil. “And the public’s response has been unbelievable. “Our company’s been inundated with media calling, and people even brought presents into the

office. We’ve even had messages of support from New Zealand, Australia and America. “People in Benidorm were making us sandwiches for the journey home, Brittany Ferries gave us all free passage from Santander to Cork, and last night, a local Indian restaurant gave us a complimentary meal. Phil added: “The story has given people hope. We might fight among each other, but when one of us in need, we all gather round, regardless of race, colour or creed. “I think the reason it touched the hearts of so many people is that stories like this usually turn out pretty badly. But this had a happy ending.” Phil was quick to praise everyone involved, especially Katie Dell from Benidorm Reviews and Dave McQueen, from the Benidorm community Facebook page, for making appeals that reached the Spanish nurse. He said the story demonstrated the power of social media, restoring the faith in humanity of everyone involved. As for Jim, he has made a ‘rapid recovery!”

Not-so-smart ‘spy’ made a huge error

A 22-YEAR-OLD man from Orihuela, on the Costa Blanca, has been arrested by police, charged with a series of frauds, during which he pretended to be a Spanish spy and a Chief Inspector in the Cartagena Police.

Jonathan M, detained last week in the Alicante area of Redovan, was accused of eight crimes, including five of fraud for the sale of fake tickets for concerts, and the purchase of a computer, plus the crime of usurpation (taking over someone’s power or property by force) by impersonating a National Intelligence Centre (CNI) spy, as well as the police chief. To make his false identity

more convincing, he even bought a police dress uniform from the son of a deceased officer. Needless to say, he failed to pay for it, initially. In addition to the crimes police attached to him, the alleged fraudster had 15 judicial requisitions in force, 10 of them with a warrant of arrest and five for the investigation of his whereabouts. He has since been released by a court with charges. Investigation Group II, of the Elche Judicial Police Brigade, arrested the ‘fraudster’ after analysing four complaints by people who bought tickets for an Izal concert, and discovered they were false only when attending the event. All but one of the swindled people who made a transfer sent money through the Bizum payment system. The original problem for investigators was that

the fraudster sent them a photograph of his supposed ID card. In reality, however, it belonged to someone else, which made it difficult for them to follow his trail. But he slipped up with one of his victims, who filed a complaint at Alcorcón Police Station because he received the same ID as the other deceived people. When the fraudster gave him a telephone number to pay him €100, via Bizum, he offered a number associated with his real name. The suspicions about the Orihuela man were confirmed when Elche Police verified that the real holder of the ID, used for the scams, had reported it to Madrid’s Vallecas Police Station. A woman had tipped him off on Facebook that she had been scammed with tickets for a concert, and that the author identified himself with his real name.

Rail bosses snub Spain for high-speed network SPANISH rail officials have snubbed homegrown companies and awarded French and Italian businesses contracts to run services on Spain’s highspeed train network, from December next year. Adif, Spain’s railway infrastructure manager, dished out contracts to France’s public railway company SNCF and Italy’s Trenitalia at last week’s meeting. But Spain’s public train company kept its contract for the busiest route, which will be operating 48 trains a day. Other Spanish companies, hoping for a slice of the mainland’s railway network, walked away emptyhanded. The Motion Rail Consortium, comprising Spanish firms Talgo and Globalia, as well as private equity providers

Trilantic Europe and Andalucian Eco Rail, failed with their bids to run train services. Renfe, SNCF and Trenitalia emerged as winners because they were the only three firms bidding on the lines who already owned their own highspeed trains.

The other competitors would have had to rent or buy their trains, making it difficult for them to operate with sufficient frequency. As part of its contract, Renfe will launch a low-cost, high-speed train between Madrid and Barcelona from April next year, with tickets

Girl, four, went to see grandma, at 2.30am! A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl was found by taxi drivers, wandering through a street at 2.30am last Saturday, pushing a pram full of toys. The youngster was wearing a onesie only when spotted by a cabbie, who comforted her before police arrived. Driver John Busutti, 52, saw the girl, in a brown bear onesie, and she told him she was off to see her grandparents in Rochford, Essex. John said: “She was pushing a toy pram and dressed in a brown, furry, onesie, and I thought, ‘there’s got to be an adult with her’. “But when I saw there wasn’t, I stopped and went back, and another AC taxi arrived at the same time. “I crouched down and said to her, ‘Darling, where are you off to?’ and she said, ‘To grandma’s’. Then I said, ‘Where’s mummy?’, and she said, ‘She’s at home asleep’.” The cabbie added: “She wasn’t confused or scared at all. She was confident, like a normal little girl.” One of the three stunned drivers had a 24-year-old female passenger, who got out and spoke to the girl, to make her feel at ease. He told the Essex Echo newspaper: “I

asked the woman if she would have a word. As a father myself, I know the girl would probably have felt better speaking to a woman, rather than three big men.” She was then kept inside the taxi until officers turned up. The cabbie added: “When the police finally arrived, and set off to find her home, we followed behind until she was safe, and then I took my passenger home.” Once police had taken the little girl home, they referred the incident to Social Services, but they also said that no crime had been committed, and that she was safe to be dropped off. AC Taxis’ manager, Stephen Noakes said: “I’m extremely proud of my drivers, John, Syed and Albie, for making sure the little girl got home safe and sound. “I’d also like to thank the young lady in one of our taxis, for her help, and would like to offer her a free journey if she contacts me. “All our drivers have recently undergone a course, training them to look out for the signs of vulnerable children, who could be in danger. “We are out on the roads 24/7, and, if we can help one child in difficulty, this has made this effort worth it.”

available to purchase from January. Trains between Spain’s two main cities currently cost €52 on average. The new, lowcost service will offer 40% discounts. Spanish train bosses say the entry of new operators into the train network will

create 66 extra journeys a day. There will be 61 trains between Madrid, Cordoba, Malaga and Sevilla, which will be a 75% increase from the current 35. There will also be cheaper tickets on both the Madrid to Barcelona line and Sevilla to Valencia connection.

Pound resilient, in spite of election speculation

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. Over the past month, GBP movement has been dominated by politics, as markets brace for the upcoming, UK, general election, which will shape what happens with Brexit, in 2020. This saw GBP/EUR climb from 1.15 to a six-month high of 1.17, with EUR/GBP retreating to 0.85. Meanwhile, GBP/USD traded between 1.27 and 1.29, whilst EUR/USD edged from 1.11 to 1.10. In spite of a looming general

election, the pound has remained remarkably resilient over the past month. This is mostly down to the Conservatives consistently topping the polls, stoking hopes that a Tory majority government will be able to push through Boris Johnson’s EU withdrawal deal, and provide some more clarity on Brexit.

The euro faced a persistent selling bias through November, with an increasingly-fragile outlook for the Eurozone, weighing down the single currency. Finally, the US dollar has traded in a wide range in recent weeks, with a slew of US-China trade headlines, keeping USD investors on their toes.

The UK general election on 12th December will undoubtedly be the key catalyst of movement in the pound, this month. A hung parliament would erode some of the pound’s recent gains, while a Labour-led Government could spark some significant shifts. A Conservative victory would be GBP-supportive.

Meanwhile, the euro may remain in the doldrums through to the end of 2019, especially if Eurozone economic data remains gloomy. For USD investors, the focus will be on the Federal Reserve, with the US dollar potentially facing some headwinds, if the bank’s forward guidance hints at more monetary easing in 2020. Spain’s gambling sector records $8.48bn in 2018 THE gambling sector in Spain continues to grow, the total hitting an estimated $8.48 billion in 2018 in terms of gross gaming revenue (GGR), records the country’s regulator.

The Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) has been posting positive results in Spain for the past nine years, the sector enjoying record expansion. An estimated $894.67m of this total was contributed by online gambling operations, specified the regulator. Lotteries again topped the charts, generating $4.64bn of the total revenue, and marking a close to 1% increase, year-over-year. The results were driven by the two lottery operators in the country, and, specifically, the Sociedad Estatal Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (SELAE) and Organización Nacional de

Ciegos Españoles (ONCE) accounting for $3.46bn and $1.13bn of the total revenue. Meanwhile, physical venues, including casinos, recorded decent results, generating close to $2.28bn, although this figure didn’t include gaming machines. In fact, more than $1bn were accumulated through traditional gaming products. Bingo came second with $654.37m and third was betting, with $502.21m. Even more impressive, online

gambling amassed some 894.67m, as reported by DGOJ. This sum amounted to a 22.5% increase, year-overyear, reaching $19.63bn. Meanwhile, gaming machines accounted for some $78.12m. million. All of this comes in the midst of planned changes to online gambling advertising, which comes into effect on 15th January next year. In just a period of five years, the average online gambling market in Spain

has increased by 270%. And, while the total online casino gambling was merely $483.67m in 2014, it hit $894.67m in 2018, which was an impressive feat in the space of five years, especially given the regulatory climate, which is toughening. Spain may attempt to control Gibraltar and all gambling companies located in the now-British territory. However, a hard Brexit may lead to a much

tougher regime on the territory, and Spain has already shown interest in legally-binding companies bringing their servers into the country. A hard Brexit could also disrupt border movement, with some 60% of all gambling workers in Gibraltar residing in Spain instead. Meanwhile, Spain is also addressing other issues, such as the incidence of problem gambling among kids. According to a study, conducted by the Federation of Rehabilitated Gamblers and Madrid’s Association of Psychologists, one in five kids aged 14-21 gambled. The UK is currently trying to address multiple issues related to “problemgambling” among youngsters. Loot boxes have been seen as one of the main culprits for underage gambling, even though the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has not classified these in-game mechanics as gambling.

The Case Of Sally Challen

In 2010, the Surrey mother-of-two Sally Challen bludgeoned her husband Richard to death as he sat eating lunch at the kitchen table. She covered his body in a pair of old curtains and left a note that said ‘I love you’. She was later arrested at the notorious suicide spot of Beachy Head. No one at her trial, including her close family and friends, was surprised when the jury found her unanimously guilty of murder. This year, Sally’s widely reported appeal against her conviction gripped the newspapers and the nation. Sally’s new defence lawyers argued that she was the victim of Richard’s “coercive control”, a newly understood type of psychological abuse and that she should be in prison for manslaughter, not murder. It is the first time that coercive control has been presented to the courts as a partial defence to murder. In the months leading up to the appeal, filmmakers Rowan Deacon and Lizzie Kempton were granted access to Sally, as well as the couple’s closest family and friends, most of whom have not spoken publicly before. The film combines their frank testimony with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage of the legal teams on both sides of appeal, to tell the story of this complex, timely and captivating case in full for the first time. As the appeal date grows closer, Sally’s youngest son David juggles his grief for his father with a compulsion to do everything he can to rebuild what’s left of his family and get his mum out of prison. Meanwhile, the legal teams try to untangle urgent legal dilemmas: is Sally’s confession that she brought the hammer to the scene of the crime fatal to her defence? Was Richard’s behaviour provocation for the killing and what effect did it have on Sally’s mental health? With only one side of the marriage left to tell the story, can the law ever get to the truth? In the build up to the appeal the odds are stacked against Sally: less than 10 percent of applications for appeal against conviction are successful. The cameras follow the action inside Royal Courts of Justice, where three of the most powerful judges in the country wrestle with the evidence and come to a final decision.

The Baby Has Landed

Reality hits, as paternity leave comes to an end for some of our families. Father of five Nigel is hanging out the washing at 5.30am just so he can get everything done in a day. Shortly afterwards he departs for his job as a concrete surveyor, which his wife Helen suspects will be welcome relief after the chaos of home. In Nottinghamshire, the return to work for Mo has focussed him on their strained financial situation. He works for the minimum wage, but it’s not enough to support the family, and they are reliant on the support of Syler’s parents. In Bedfordshire, Shabazz conducts a ‘man training’ session for his sons Ezrah And Elijah as he prepares for his own return to work. Shabazz wants to make sure his own sons have the work ethic and discipline his dad instilled in him. Having spent a night in hospital, first time fathers Paul and Craig are puzzling over how to tell their new twins apart. Despite all their practical diligence in the lead up to the birth, they are unprepared for how emotional the farewell will be when they leave their surrogate, Mel. On a remote Northumberland farm we meet Richard and Eilidh Wise for the first time. They are expecting in the middle of lambing season.

Kirstie Allsopp presents a special peak-time episode of the daytime craft show, offering a guide to home-made creations to make Christmas a bit more special, from decorations to food and drink. Among the ideas featured in the show are recipes for handmade cheese and candied pecans, as well as two different festive cocktails with bitters. Kirstie’s suggestions for projects include an alternative to the traditional tree that will not shed pine needles, a frozen ice bucket, and a selection of dazzling decorations.

The remaining candidates head to 70 St Mary Axe - also known as the Can of Ham, a spectacular new 21-storey building in the heart of the City of London. There, they are interviewed by some of Alan Sugar’s most trusted advisers, who are primed to pick apart their business plans. There’s tough talking, turmoil and tears as bravado breaks, egos are eradicated and business plans bulldozed, before Alan decides which two candidates have done enough to earn a place in the final.

Drug-smuggler had cocaine worth €155m aboard yacht

Dentist helped extract baby on historic street A 61-YEAR-OLD Dutch drug-smuggler, who tried to import cocaine valued at €155m into Europe aboard his yacht, has been jailed for 16 years. Maarten Pieterse, by trade a jewellery entrepreneur, was found guilty, with more than two tonnes of the Class A drug on his boat, SY Marcia, last year in the English Channel. Border Force officers from HMC Vigilant seized the Belgium-bound craft on 18th July 2018 and took it to the Cornish port of Newlyn. Searches revealed a hidden compartment at the back of the yacht, crewed only by Pieterse and a co-defendant, who was found not guilty of the conspiracy. The haul, containing 1,671 blocks of cocaine, worth

more than €155m at street value, took Border Force and National Crime Agency officers well into the next day to document. Anne McCracken of the CPS Organised Crime Division, said: “This was drug-smuggling on a truly staggering scale. The two tonnes of cocaine concealed aboard the yacht were tested at between 7483% cent purity, which would have made it some of the strongest available, had it reached the market. “Cocaine is a major source of revenue for ruthless, organised crime groups, and it causes misery to people throughout the world.” She added: “Maarten Pieterse exploited this deadly trade for personal gain, using the Azores as an ideal staging post for the lucrative smuggling route, between South America and Europe.” The Rotterdam-registered Marcia, purchased by Pieterse for €40,000 in 2012,

had been converted to hold extra diesel, so that it could travel longer distances. The Crown’s case was that Pieterse took a 1,300-nauticalmile deviation into the midAtlantic for the purposes of “coopering”: meeting fellow smugglers at sea to transfer illegal cargo between boats. Data from a satellite communication device found aboard the yacht revealed a 22-day gap between it leaving Gran Canaria and arriving in the Azores on 5th July 2018, which was significantly longer a journey than necessary. The prosecution also presented messages, sent via satellite to a Dutch mobile phone, which referred to a “huge birthday cake with lots of candles” for the 93rd birthday reunion of an “Auntie Ann” at Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport. There was no such party: this was a code for criminal transactions!

Miracle machine strips wine of alcohol content

A NEW invention, which lowers the alcohol content of wine by 30%, is the brainchild of El Bulli-trained chemist Pere Castells, now aligned to start-up company Alacarte. His device can turn a 14% alcohol bottle into an 8% bottle in just five minutes – without compromising on taste. Bars and restaurants are the main market for the first 1,000 units of the €3,000 machine, which Castells eventually intends to sell to the public. The inventor, who worked with El Bulli owner Ferran Adria for 10 years, unveiled his contraption at the

BBVA Bilbao Food Capital event. The machine’s process is actually similar to dialysis, and also uses the same technology as the rotary cone column, the contraption invented to make decaffeinated coffee. Inside the machine, a thin membrane separates a water tank from the wine. Both liquids are spun around, causing alcohol to

be sucked into the water, with more rotations leading to less alcohol. The machine can halve the alcohol content in a bottle of wine in 10 minutes… and even reduce it to zero! “We have realised that when you take out the alcohol you ‘undress’ the wine, and if it has deficiencies, it shows more,” said Castells. “Wronglyconstructed wines do not work with zero alcohol.”

A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has given birth in the middle of a street in Spain’s historic city of Lleida.

The public delivery occurred when two members of the public, a waiter and a dentist assisted the woman as she went into labour on Calle Anselm Clava last Thursday evening. The events unravelled after the woman’s partner ran into El Rebost restaurant and bar, asking for help, when it was clear that the child’s arrival was imminent. Juan José Yera, a waiter there, did not hesitate to intervene. He told Amazon publication La Mañana that after calling the 112

emergency services, he hurried outside and found the woman actually giving birth on the pavement. Juan added that it was an extremely fast delivery, and that he cut the baby’s umbilical cord, with the help of dentist Ramon Ventí, who had also raced to the scene to help. Paramedics, who soon arrived, transferred the mother and baby to the Arnau University Hospital in Vilanova de Lleida. Ramon told Spanish daily paper La Vanguardia, that the minutes before the child’s birth were extremely stressful, and that the father was very nervous. But the dentist did not think twice about helping the family. Both mother and child are, reportedly, doing well.

Andalucia’s €30m aim to lure tourists from Britain

AS the UK politicians, and members of the public, squabble over the EU, the Junta de Andalucia has launched an ambitious, post-Brexit, tourism strategy.

The Junta’s €29.7m, 2020 Action Plan, is aimed at promoting the region’s tourist credentials to Britain, and 49 other countries. A total of 720 promotional measures have been pledged in the plan, presented by Tourism Minister Juan Marin. These include a €1m budget, designed specifically to target the British market, in a bid to safeguard Andalucia against a potential, no-deal Brexit. Also, there is more of a cultural tourism focus under this plan, which includes a new initiative to promote flamenco. And, after Brexit, the Junta is hoping the area can still attract millions of British

tourists. The Junta also has its sights set on the US and Asia, with both markets growing a lot, according to Marin. “It opens up great opportunities for investment and employment, not only in the tourism sector, but in other tourist areas,” added the politician. This announcement follows Andalucia’s most successful summer, despite the threat of Brexit. Spain’s southern-most region this year had more than 26 million overnight hotel stays between June and September. In addition, some 2.37 million Brits arrived at Malaga Airport between January and September, which represented a 2.5% year-onyear increase.

THE Costa del Sol, nicknamed the Costa del Crime decades ago, has certainly been living up to its hideous nickname during the past two years. You name it, the criminals have tackled it, from burntdown beach clubs, bombs and assassinations in broad daylight, to the lethal combination of a power battle, a growing drugs market and a rise in ruthless gangs, which has seen violence spill on to the streets. While drug-related crime has long been a feature of the region, given its geographic location, just north of hashishhaven Morocco and next to the main entry point from South America to Europe, life has become more violent in the region during the last 18 months. A few factors are behind this, as several experts have explained recently. They include a new, ruthless generation of DutchMoroccan gangs, who are hoping to dominate the area. There has also been a huge crackdown on the Campo de Gibraltar, a drug-trafficking hotspot to the west of the Costa del Sol. This means the business is being forced to move up the coastline. Additionally, since Ireland and Spain joined forces to crack down on Irish mafia activity in the area several years ago, the former top dogs were forced to move out to Dubai. This left a power vacuum which, many believe, has yet to be filled. And with more than 120 criminal organisations operating along southern Spain, all vying for a slice of the action, it is making rivalries and gangland wars almost impossible to avoid. It is only when these battles happen in broad daylight that the public get a glimpse into the criminal underworld, which continues to run rampant in the area. Since an Estepona beach club was burned down as a warning in April last year, drug-related killings have become a more frequent occurrence. Since that date, the respected Olive Press online newspaper has been keeping a watchful eye on the mindless, Costa del Sol incidents. 9th April 2018: Heaven beach club was torched by the Colombians as a warning to its owner, who was later shot dead outside a San Pedro church in front of his family last year. 6th May 2018: Heaven Beach Club owner David Avila Ramos was assassinated at point-blank range while

sitting with family in their car, just after his daughter’s communion. He was later revealed to be a huge cocaine-trafficker, who owed millions to the Colombians. 11th September 2018: British drug-trafficker Sean Hercules gunned down in Cancelada during a shoot-out with police. 16th September 2018: British man shot, knee-capped and given a "Glasgow Smile” in Puerto Banus, Marbella. The brutal attack was believed to be a warning to other gang members. The unnamed Brit was left with multiple injuries and broken bones. 2nd October 2018: Spaniard Brian Carmona gunned down on the Estepona streets, before being bundled into a car, tortured, killed and dumped in Algeciras. Expats and tourists hid for cover as the kidnap took place on the heaving promenade.

10th October 2018: Bomb blows up in San Pedro carwash (above), while another explodes under a car in Benahavis: both warnings from Swedish drug-mafias! The Swedish trio behind the bombs were arrested two months later. 20th November 2018: Frenchman, 58, shot at more

than 20 times with a Russian AK-47 gun and murdered outside his Marbella home in upmarket Nagueles. It was a settling of accounts between drug mafias.

7th January 2019: Moroccan man shot in the leg outside Kube nightclub in Puerto Banus, Marbella. Motive was unclear, but it was similar to other warnings or threats

6th December -12th December 2019 made by criminal gangs. 21st January 2019: Big-name businessman Marco Yaqout, who owned several Puerto Banus establishments, was shot dead while driving his Bentley home to San Pedro, Marbella. Police ruled that the death was related to the illicit drug trade. 17th March 2019: Body of 23-year-old Frenchman, of sub-Saharan origin, found dumped in Guadalhorce industrial estate, after he had been shot at least 10 times. 1st April 2019: British father and son disappeared from the Costa del Sol and have yet to be found. But Daniel and Liam Poole, 46 and 22, are feared dead from “a drug deal gone wrong” after police revealed that a ransom call had been made from Morocco, immediately after their disappearance. 27th May 2019: A young man of Moroccan origin was shot in a leg in Benalmadena as a suspected warning from a rival drug gang. 17th September 2019: The body of a 39-year-old man, showing signs of violence, found dumped on the side of the A-7, between Marbella and Mijas, in an advanced state of decomposition. 27th October 2019: Bulgarian man’s body found dumped in ditch on the A-7176 road, connecting Marbella and Istan, just hours after he had been shot three times in the stomach and once in the arm. He had no connections with Spain, and police believed it was a classic settling of accounts. However, the investigation continues. 15th November 2019: DutchMoroccan man shot dead outside property in Marbella’s Andasol urbanisation, before killers made off in a luxury car. His associate, who was also shot but survived, was rushed to Costa del Sol Hospital. 21st November 2019: Briton Peter Andrew Williamson, 39, from Salford, Manchester, was shot and killed in his Audi, outside his Mijas property. Police believe the murder was drug-related.

Expat missing after kayaking in the sea BRITISH expat Kenneth Dallas McPherson, 62, disappeared last Saturday after going kayaking off Torrevieja Marina, in south-eastern Spain. Kenneth, 5ft 5ins, has short, white-and-grey hair and facial hair, as well as a trim beard. Drunk driver’s canal fall after police chase A Drunken man was arrested, while driving under the influence, after crashing his car into the Imperial Canal of Aragon in Zaragoza, Spain, having fled from the police.

The incident occurred in the early hours of last Sunday, after Local Police officers attempted to stop a car which was being driven erratically around Paseo de Ruiseñores.

But the driver, who failed to stop at the scene, sped away and mounted a curb, losing control of his vehicle, which overturned into the canal. Emergency services rushed to the scene, including firefighters, but the reckless driver had no serious injuries. Officers conducted a breathtest on the man, who, they suspected, had consumed a great deal of alcohol, and he was found to be over the legal limit. The man was, subsequently, arrested and charged with drunk-driving and reckless driving.

KittyCatz to the rescue!

KittyCatz is a small group, but each dedicated volunteer is an expert in his or her own field. We formed a year ago, to unburden other charities in Tenerife of the most sick and vulnerable cats and kittens, and bottle-feeding kittens. The charities we help often have the will, but not the volunteers, to help with these specialist cases. Some days are amazing, when a sick cat does their first solid poop. Yes, that’s a great day! Some days are desperately sad, when you stay awake all night, listening to a heart beat becoming weaker, by the hour. We do our best, and, whatever the outcome, they are cared for and loved.

We are not a charity in our own right, but are affiliated to registered charities Sangha San Miguel Educational Farm, and Madat (Manos Amigas de los Animales de Tenerife). Pictured is Pumpkin at two weeks old. Before birth, one of his legs was dead from the knee down, because his umbilical cord was wrapped around it in the womb. We bottle-fed him and treated his infections, and our vets removed the stump of his leg, leaving him with three sturdy legs. Then we found a wonderful family to adopt him. Hard work? Yes! Worth it? You bet! Find us online at www.kittycatz.net

Rescued tigers have a new Spanish home JUST five of nine tigers, which just survived a gruelling journey across Europe, set off last Saturday for their new home in a Spanish animal refuge, after weeks of recovery at a Polish zoo.

“The tigers have left,” said Malgorzata Chodyla, the spokeswoman for a zoo in Poznan, western Poland. “We’re very happy that in just 24 to 30 hours, they will have arrived.” Their destination was the Primadomus Wildlife Refuge, in the south-eastern Spanish town of Villena. Malgorzata said there was a brief scare, because two of the sedated tigers did not

Live Paws News THERE are so many people in Tenerife who spend their time, tirelessly raising money and awareness, for the benefit of others. Recently, an event called Hidden Heros was held to highlight the good work done by so many, with Sarah Wagstaff and Jane Dean being the finalists of the voting process. The €2,500 prize was to go to a charity, chosen by the winner. Sarah’s choice was AECC cancer charity, and Jane chose Live PAWS. The event was sponsored by Pre Loved by Esther, whose proprietor, Esther Cushway, is no stranger to raising money for worthy causes, through innovative and spectacular events. This evening was one of those occasions. Sarah was the well-deserved winner, but, in the spirit that is embedded in these amazing women, they agreed to share the winnings between the two charities. Thank you so much to all three ladies, who are a shining example to us all, to try to be better, strive to benefit others, and, of course, have good

want to sleep. “When the whole team have to enter the enclosure to carry out the tiger, and it suddenly lifts its head up, these are some tense moments,” she told the French Press (AFP). “But everything happened safely.” She added that the vehicle had heating and the tigers had enough room to switch positions. In late October, Polish border authorities found 10 big cats, emaciated and dehydrated, in the back of a truck and on their way from Italy to a zoo in Russia’s Dagestan Republic. Polish prosecutors charged two Italian truck-drivers and a Russian man, believed to have organised the journey, with animal abuse, after the truck became stuck for

days on Poland’s border with Belarus. Prosecutors also charged a Polish-border veterinarian for failing to examine the tigers properly when they first arrived at the Koroszczyn crossing, where one of them died. The surviving nine animals were taken to two Polish zoos. But the Poznan zookeeper said: “They were emaciated, as well as being dehydrated, with sunken eyes, excrement stuck to their fur, urine burns, and in a total state of stress, without the will or desire to live when they were first discovered.” According to animal rights organisations, worldwide, there are just between 3,200-3,900 tigers in the wild Another 7,000 are held in captivity.

Helping Hands

Noah’s Ark receives grand Christmas tip for homeless CHILDREN’S Charity Helping Hands has donated €1,000 to Noah’s Ark, a group which supports over 200 homeless people in South Tenerife. The money will fund an excellent meal for all the friends of Noah’s Ark to enjoy over the Christmas period. And if you would like to donate any food parcels, the centre will be more than happy to accept them. Liz Montague, who runs Helping

Hands, said: “Thank you to all those who care, and who are making a difference. You never know what battles people face in life.” Noah’s Ark has now moved to new premises, in Puerto Colon, but the charity can still be contacted directly on the following link, if you wish to offer a small donation to help a homeless person at this special time of the year. https://www.facebook.com/ noahsarktenerifesur/

K9 Animal News

Only a week to go! K9 would like to invite you all to their Christmas Dinner and Cabaret. It is taking place next Saturday (14th December) in St Eugene’s in San Eugenio. The cost for tickets is €20, which includes dinner and an amazing cabaret show. There are a couple of food choices, as well as a vegetarian option. Drinks include €8 for a bottle of wine, €1 for water or refreshments, and €1.50 for a jug of beer, until 11.30pm. We are inviting everyone to meet at the bar at 7pm, and the meal will be served at 8pm. The Cabaret includes Frankie Mack Rat Pack Show and Gary Nelson. Tickets can sell out quite quckly for this event, so make sure you get your tickets early, to avoid disappointment. We do have various locations where you can buy the tickets, which are shown on the poster. We have a Facebook page, should you wish to make contact this way. Our Christmas party is always a lot of fun, so don’t miss out this year, and get your tickets today. We are asking people to bring along some treats for our furry friends - our cats and dogs. We always get so many wonderful donations throughout the year for them,

so we want to continue this wonderful tradition, and make our fur-babies’ Christmas special for them. They don’t yet have their forever families to share this happy occasion with, so we do our very best to make sure they are spoilt. We are open all year round, including Christmas Day, because our dogs and cats need to be walked, cleaned, fed and looked after, every single day. If you are looking for a lovely way to spend your Christmas morning, please do call up and see us, and maybe walk a dog or two. You can visit any day between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! We have had many adoptions over the last few months, but for every dog that leaves, one or two are found, surrendered or abandoned. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support every year, and would like to wish you all a very successful, fur-baby-filled 2020. If you interested in donating, or holding your own fundraiser for K9, please contact us on 667 638 468.

Accion Del Sol News

A look of despair! THIS gorgeous Canarian Podenco arrived, recently, at the refuge, via Protection Civil. He was found wandering around the streets in Arona. His owner had not complied with legislation and had him microchipped, so we don’t know if he is just lost, or been abandoned.

He is so sad, and his eyes speak volumes. Please do contact us if you are his owner, and ensure that your dog’s microchip information is correct. In the event of losing your pet, they can be found and reunited with you to ensure that they don’t have to suffer the confusion and sadness of ending up, needlessly, in a refuge. The refuge will closed from 22nd December to the 2nd January, inclusive, for the Christmas period. Presents for the doggies! With Christmas around the corner, we have again started a campaign after the success of last year, asking our friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs. These can include tinned dog food for our older dogs and puppies, puppy milk, dog toys, dog collars and leads. Marion and her team do such an amazing job at the refuge, so I thought it would be great to bring some Christmas cheer to the 200+ dogs. You can deliver your box personally to the refuge by the 20th December, during our opening hours. Alternatively, call 687 905 511, to arrange for your donations

to be collected. Please write your name on the box, so that we know who kindly donated. We would like to thank you in advance for your help and support. Adoptions The island’s refuges are full of abandoned dogs, so please adopt and don’t buy. Please spread the word, amongst your Spanish friends, about the dire situation, here in Tenerife. We have 200 gorgeous dogs here, all desperately seeking loving homes. We need to find adopters for the dogs in our care. We do not charge for adoptions, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of the refuge. Every dog is microchipped and fully vaccinated, and is heartworm and flea-free. They each have a passport, and have been sterilised, so you can be sure your new dog has the best start to its new life. Please adopt a dog, and don’t buy, and please never let your dog breed. If

we all help the dogs in the full refuges, we can make a difference! Assistance required We are always looking for people to walk the dogs in the refuge during opening hours. Please do call the refuge on 664 321 219 or 602 463 242, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol.

Go nuts for ginger! WHILE breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it can sometimes get a little repetitive and boring. Unless you have ginger.

This versatile superfood hosts a bevy of health benefits, from treating nausea to reducing muscle pain. Whether you want to hide the spicy kick with creamy butter, or let it fire up your senses first thing, as you drink your coffee, ginger can bring both amazing and unique flavours to your morning. Here are eight ways to reap the health benefits of ginger in your breakfast: Your morning cup of coffee Coffee and ginger create one powerful free radical-fighting duo, especially since coffee is one of the world’s biggest sources of antioxidants. To get your morning superfood pickme-up, simply add ground ginger to your java (up to 1

teaspoon per cup). Ginger tea for Vitamin C Ginger tea is a popular beverage for warming up chilly winters. Not only is it warm and comforting, it may help calm an upset stomach. A cup of this spicy tea in the morning would be particularly helpful in relieving nausea, motion sickness, or pregnancy-induced morning sickness. You can easily make your own ginger tea at home, by grating ginger-root, and letting it steep in boiling water for 10 minutes. Add sugar to

taste. Or, find ginger tea in the shops. Ginger jam on your biscuits Pantries are often stocked with fruit jams. Whether you’re buying it or making your own, a smear of ginger jam is delicious on toast or biscuits. For people on a low-sugar fix, you can also mince ginger and fold it into your butter. Replace your maple syrup You can also easily make your own ginger syrup at home by gently boiling these ingredients for 30 minutes, and straining the mixture

through a sieve or strainer, for a smoother texture. Ginger syrup recipe *¼ pound peeled and thinlysliced ginger *1 cup sugar *1 cup water Try an anti-inflammatory granola bowl A bowl of crunchy, fibre-rich granola is always an easy breakfast choice. But adding fragrant, spicy ginger granola to the mix would make it even better! Grate 1 inch of ginger and mix it with honey or melted coconut oil, then drizzle it over

your breakfast bowl. Adding ginger to your morning breakfast bowl provides some serious anti-inflammatory benefits, especially for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Add ginger juice to smoothies For a spin on this morning beverage, try a gutawakening ginger juice. Ginger juice is great in a variety of things, like stirfries and salad dressings. It includes a myriad of health benefits, from boosting the metabolism, to naturally fighting bacteria. It’s also particularly good for treating pain, menstrual cramps and exercise-induced soreness. If ginger juice is too strong on its own for you, go ahead and add some to your morning smoothie, or post-workout protein shake. Breakfast pastries Ginger is used in popular baked goods. There’s gingerbread, ginger nuts, ginger-spiced cakes and pies. But you can rely on ginger to amp up breakfast pastries, too.

Fruit is cute but beware the juice

THE world’s most common health recommendation is, probably, to eat more fruit and vegetables. Everyone knows that fruits are healthy, and real, whole food.

Most of them are also very convenient. Some people call them nature’s fast food, because they are so easy to carry and prepare. However, fruits are relatively high in sugar, compared with other whole foods. A lot of evidence has shown that excessive intake of added sugar is harmful. This includes table sugar (sucrose) and high-fructose corn syrup, both of which are about half glucose, half fructose. Many people now believe that because added sugars are bad, the same must apply to fruits, which also contain fructose. However, this is a misconception. Fructose is only harmful in large amounts, and it’s difficult to get excessive amounts of fructose from fruit. Eating whole fruit, it is almost impossible to consume enough fructose to cause harm. Fruits are loaded with fibre and water, and have significant chewing resistance. For this reason, most fruits (like apples) take a while to eat and digest, meaning that the fructose hits the liver slowly. Compare that with a 16oz bottle of Coke, which contains 52g of sugar, 30 of which are fructose, and has no nutritional value. A single apple would make you feel quite full and less inclined to eat more food. Conversely, a bottle of fizzy pop offers remarkably poor satiety, and people don’t compensate for the sugar by eating less food. When fructose hits your liver quickly, and in large amounts, as is the case when you drink soda, it can have adverse health effects, over time. However, when it hits your liver slowly, and in small amounts, as is the case when you eat an apple, your body is well adapted to easily metabolise the fructose. While eating large amounts of added

sugar is harmful to most people, the same does not apply to fruit. Of course, fruits are more than just watery packages of fructose. There are lots of nutrients in them that are important for health. They contain fibre, vitamins and minerals, as well as a plethora of antioxidants and other plant compounds. What’s more, fruits tend to be high in several vitamins and minerals that many people don’t get enough of, including Vitamin C, potassium and folate. Of course, “fruit” is an entire food group. There are thousands of different edible fruits found in nature, and their nutrient compositions can vary greatly. So, if you want to maximise fruits’ health effects, focus on ones that are rich in nutrients. Try fruits with more skin. The skin of fruits is usually very rich in antioxidants and fibre. This is the reason that berries, which have greater amounts of skin, gram for gram, are often considered healthier than larger fruits. Multiple observational studies have shown that people who eat more fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of various diseases. Many studies have shown that eating fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of heart attack and stroke, the two leading causes of death, in Western countries. One study looked at how different types of fruit affect the risk of type 2 diabetes. Those who consumed the most grapes, apples and blueberries had the lowest risk, with blueberries having the strongest effect. People who eat the most fruit tend to be more health conscious, less likely to smoke

and more likely to exercise. The satiety index is a measure of how much different foods contribute to feelings of fullness. Fruits like apples and oranges are among the highest scoring foods tested, even more filling than beef and eggs. This means that if you increase your intake of apples or oranges, you will likely feel so full that you will automatically eat less of other foods. There is also one interesting study that demonstrates how fruits can contribute to weight loss. In this sixmonth study, nine men ate a diet consisting only of fruits (82% of calories) and nuts (18% of calories). Not surprisingly, these men lost significant amounts of weight. Those who were overweight lost even more than those who were at a healthy weight. Overall, given the strong effects that fruits can have on satiety, it seems beneficial to replace other foods, especially junk foods, with fruit, to help you lose weight over the long term. When to avoid fruit Even though fruit is healthy for most people, there are some reasons why others may need to avoid it. Those on a very low-carb or ketogenic diet may give it a wide berth, because the main goal of these diets is to reduce carb intake sufficiently for the brain to start using mostly ketone bodies for fuel, instead of glucose. For this to happen, it’s necessary to restrict carbs to under 50g per day, sometimes all the way down to 20-30g. Given that just a single piece of fruit can contain more than 20g of carbs, it’s obvious that fruits are inappropriate for such a diet. Even just one piece of fruit per day could easily knock you out of ketosis.Even though whole fruits are very healthy for most people, avoid binging on fruit juice or dried fruit. Many of the fruit juices on the market aren’t even “real” fruit juices. They consist of water mixed with some sort of concentrate, and a lot of added sugar. But even if you get 100% real fruit juice, keep your intake moderate. There is a lot of sugar in fruit juice, about as much as a sugar-sweetened beverage. However, there is no fibre and chewing resistance to slow down consumption, making it very easy to take in a large amount of sugar, in a short period of time. Similarly, dried fruits are very high in sugar, and it’s easy to eat large amounts of them. Smoothies are somewhere in the middle. If you put the whole fruit in the blender, it’s much better than drinking fruit juice. Eating the whole fruit is best.

CD Tenerife

Battling Tenerife lose out to classy Almería

AFTER a good away win against Sporting, Tenerife had their first home game under temporary coach Sesé Rivero, who made a couple of changes to the starting XI against Almeria last Saturday.

He brought in Alberto and Dani Gómez, in place of Javi Alonso and Malbasic who were on the bench. The match began with great intensity, and referee Iglesias Villanueva won the antipathy of the home fans quickly, by not giving a couple of free-kicks for terrible challenges by Almería in the opening minutes. But he also ignored a challenge by Nahuel on Darwin Nuñez, which should also have been punished. But the fans’ anger mounted when the next play saw warnings for Nahuel himself and Ortolá for protesting. But the subsequent freekick ended without consequences. The game settled down after this scrappy start, with both teams enjoying possession, seeking a way through each other’s defence, with Almeria taking first blood after 28 minutes. Lazo broke forward into the Tenerife box and attempted a one-two, only for the ball to bounce off defender Alberto straight into his path, giving him the easiest of finishes as he passed the ball into the goal, avoiding an outstretched Ortolá, who was helpless. CDT tried to react quickly, and Dani Gómez crashed a shot against the post, but he was deemed offside anyway. Immediately, Lazo was on target again at the other end when Juan Muñoz laid off an excellent ball, placing a right-footed shot from outside the area past Ortolá to make it 2-0 after 32 minutes. This was devastating for Tenerife, who didn’t deserve to concede two goals in just four minutes. Six minutes later, though,

CD Tenerife 1 UD Almería 3

they were back in the game. Suso hit a fantastic cross from the right-hand side, into the danger area, and Borja Lasso, running in to the box, connected with a brilliant header, giving Almeria goalkeeper Fernando no chance. After checking for offside with VAR, the referee gave the goal. Tenerife tried to level before half-time and had a couple of halfchances, but they went into the dressing room 2-1 down. The second half started as lively as the first, with Sesé Rivero having to make an unexpected change for Nahuel, who had picked up an injury. The stand-in manager surprised everyone by bringing on Elliot instead of Malbasic, who was surely expected to play. Tenerife’s first big scare came almost immediately from a Darwin shot, only six yards out and in front of Ortolá, who got a foot to it to prevent a goal. The Tenerife keeper came to the rescue again a few minutes later when Juan Muñoz was played in by a clever chip from Gaspar, leaving him one-on-one with Ortolá, who this time got a hand to Muñoz’s shot and pushed it wide for a corner. On the hour mark, Muñoz had another chance when Almeria were awarded a free-kick, 25 yards out in front of goal. Muñoz stepped up and curled the ball around the wall, crashing it into the right-hand post and saving Tenerife

on this occasion. The blanquiazul needed a change to get back into the game, and Rivero replaced Alberto with Malbasic for a more attacking formation. The next chances fell to CDT when the other Muñoz, Alex, headed just wide from an in-swinging corner, and Dani Gomez shot over the bar with only Fernando to beat. But Tenerife had at least shaken off Almeria’s dominance. The partnership of Dani and

Malbasic was starting to gel as they created chances, while heading for the final whistle. But the Serbian couldn’t convert them, putting one wide and another over the bar. Towards the end, Dani ran out of batteries and Sesé substituted him for Jorge, giving another debut to a player under his charge. The final minutes of the match were tense, as Tenerife tried everything to tie a game that had escaped them. They even ended with Carlos Ruiz playing up front, trying to make something happen. Unfortunately, defeat was inevitable and Almeria marked it with a third goal in stoppage time, as Tenerife left themselves exposed at the back. Aguza scored with a counterattack, shooting past a deflated Ortolá to rub salt in the wound in the 96th minute. An unhappy crowd, who had seen their team battle to the end, and the scoreline flattering second-place Almeria, left the ground with shouts of “Conception

out”, referring to the club’s chairman, with their team now 17th in the league. On Monday the CD Tenerife board announced the appointment of a new coach, signifying the end of Rivero’s short reign in charge. They have brought in Rubén Baraja, who had previously managed in this league at Elche, Rayo Vallecano and Sporting de Gijón. At a press conference, he assured fans that when he has managed teams, they have performed “very good things”. He also said he knew how to play football, and that he would try to give continuity. Above all, he wants solidity in defence, and for CDT to be a hard-to-beat team. Baraja does have a bit of time with his new squad, because their next match isn’t until next Friday (13th Dec), away to Malaga, who have their own problems. They are languishing in 19th position, and in the relegation zone. Will it be a happy Christmas for Tenerife fans? Let’s wait and see!

Messi canes the rest with six of the best! LIONEL MESSI, Barcelona’s talismanic striker, has beaten Virgil van Dijk and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the Ballon d’Or for a record sixth time.

The 32-year-old Argentine bagged football’s top prize, having scored 54 times for club and country during the 2018-2019 season. “Today is my sixth Ballon d’Or,” he said. “It’s a completely different moment, lived with my family and my children. “As my wife said, you must never stop dreaming but always work to improve and continue to enjoy. I am very lucky… I am blessed.”

Messi finished ahead of Dutch defender van Dijk, who helped his club Liverpool overcome Tottenham to win the Champions League in Madrid this summer. In third place was former Real Madrid star Ronaldo, who completed a big-money move to Juventus last year. Meanwhile, in women’s football, American striker Megan

Rapinoe, who led the US national team to a second consecutive World Cup this year, won the Golden Ball award, with England’s Lucy Bronze second. Top 10 order of merit 1. Lionel Messi (Barcelona and Argentina) 2. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool and Netherlands) 3. Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus and Portugal) 4. Sadio Mane (Liverpool and Senegal) 5. Gaffers defy the scoreline! LAST Friday’s results ensured that 6-2 was a popular score-line, but Gaffers would not have settled for that, romping to an 8-0 success at Sandys Bandits, with John putting away a 107 finish during the match.

Ourplace Playboys v Mad Hatters The Playboys went 3-1 up, and it’s worth noting that the leg score was just 9-7 at that stage, so it wasn’t as one-sided as it appeared. But the trend continued, and the Playboys ran out 6-2 winners, with a 180 for Del Boy (Playboys), and one for Harvey (Hatters). A special mention for Ben, who sent the result in at 8.30… and that was AM, not PM! Emerald ‘B’ v The Loch Inn Bullseyes This was another 6-2 result, and there was just one 3-0 to each team, so, maybe not as one-sided either, and also a mention for yours truly for my 171. It wasn’t as good as a 180, but I wasn’t aiming at the 20s. Honestly! The Pub v Sandys Bookie Boys It was, apparently, down to “good darts, poor finishing”. We all know that feeling, and it ended 7-1

to the home side. Pas’O’Nadas Int’ v Suters 20.30 Crew The home team took the first game, then lost six in a row, before taking the trebles. But there were three 3-2s in there, and Sam (Suters) was clearly on form with two 180s, while Santi P O N had a 101 finish. Scooters & Chevys A v Waterfall Here’s the Facebook quote: “Scooters A 2 Waterfall 6, a very long night but good darts, apart from one game, which was three legs only. The rest went to four and five legs, and it all came down to hitting the doubles. Waterfall got more. Good fun. Thanks to the staff, good food, trebles, Waterfall.” Apparently, Kevin hit the trebles winner at 1.30am. In Division 2, Pink Elephant were at home to Naughty Nautas, and another 8-0 romp ensued, but at least Steve won a leg for Nautas. The Club House v Palms Sports Bar This ended 5-3 to The Sports Bar, but I don’t know much about it, and neither does Mark, it seems, and he was there! He thought they’d lost 5-4, but the Facebook pictures confirm that they all had a good night. Marilyns v Ourplace v Playgirls Some close games apparently, but another 6-2, to the away team this time. Clouseau’s v Pas’O’Nadas This was close at 3-2 to the visitors, after the singles, and they took both doubles to run out 5-3 winners. Picasso’s @ Palms v Club Activo As usual, I’ll leave it to Graham; “Activo v Picasso, 6-2 to Activo, trebles to Activo! Well, what do I say? We had a great night of darts! Nice food from Dave! Our last game this year cos we have been good and played all our games! Merry Xmas to all who still have games to play! See you next year!” Ourplace Breakaways v Scooters & Chevys B I can only tell you that it was 5-3, and that there were close games. Sundowners v Emerald Lounge Emerald went 4-1 up, with all the singles being won 2-0, and it ended with another 6-2 to the away team.
