Armed robbers grab €3,000 of takings from a bingo hall

Squatters in Los Cristianos given a month to clear off

THREE men, armed with machetes, who were involved in a violence-threatening robbery at a bingo hall during the early hours of Monday, intimidated the staff with the deadly weapons.

SQUATTERS at Los Tarajales Beach Shopping Centre, on Los Cristianos promenade, have been given a month to disappear… or face a forceful eviction! The decision, by the Court of First Instance No.5 of Arona, will delight owners of the land and the shopping centre, who had filed a complaint, reports daily newspaper Diario De Avisos. A total of 13 people, who appealed an eviction order

AT LEAST 62 migrants, including seven women and a twoyear-old girl, died last Wednesday when heading for the Canary Islands, when their boat hit a rock in the middle of the sea and capsized. The incident occurred some 25km (15 miles) north of the town of Nouadhibou, near the border with Western Sahara, a Mauritanian security official told AFP (French Press Agency). The craft immediately began taking on water and the engine fell apart, confirmed officials. Yet the boat wasn’t far from the shore, only for a large swell to prevent it from reaching safety. Online newspaper Euro Weekly News understands that the makeshift boat was trying to reach the Mauritanian coast, because

after squatting in the premises of the disused building, were notified by the court. There is even better news for local businesses because the eviction will also affect the rest of the squatters, totalling nearly 100. In the event of them not leaving within one month, the Arona Court will force their expulsion. Arona Council, aware that the premises do not meet habitable conditions, has, repeatedly, demanded greater speed from the courts, regarding the squatters. Their presence seriously damages the municipality’s image as a holiday

destination. It also harms the quality of life of the residents and affects businesses, both hoteliers and café owners in the area, because of the unacceptable display of mattresses, clothes-lines, supermarket trolleys, tables, chairs and pets, in full view of pedestrians, who comprise tourists, mainly. Hoteliers around the Los Tarajales beach have expressed their discomfort several times through newspapers. Their clients complain not only of the “deplorable” image offered by the shopping centre, but also of altercations they have witnessed in the area.

The incident happened at around 1am at Añaza Bingo Hall, on Luis Celso García Guadalupe Avenue, in the Santa Cruz area. The National Police were informed immediately, and all the details, as well as

security-camera footage, were passed over to them to enable their investigation to begin immediately. The officers were told that the trio entered the premises wearing hooded jackets, to avoid being recognised on camera. Footage taken from the security cameras showed the three men carrying machetes, and, once inside the premises, they began threatening the staff, while stealing the takings, making off with around €3,000. National Police working on the case, are expecting a prompt identification of the thieves, so they can arrest them.

Biker dies after car crash A MOTORBIKE rider died after colliding with car on Wednesday afternoon in Tenerife, on the TF-620 road in Fasnia, in the Santa Cruz province. The Canarian Government’s Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert at 3.15pm, regarding the crash, saying the biker was unconscious and needed healthcare.

But on arrival, medics confirmed that the 33-yearold man had died because of his injuries.

62 migrants add to the 2019 list of drownings

those on board were seeking food and fuel. The number of passengers aboard the shipwreck was around 175, all from Gambia, and mostly young people aged 20-30, including 13 women and the two-year-old girl. The tragedy was the worst loss of life this year, along

the increasingly-travelled Atlantic migration route to Europe, as well as being the sixth-deadliest migrant capsize globally, according to data from the IOM (International Organisation for Migration). Of the 83 survivors, who managed to swim to safety after the boat capsized,

Mauritania’s Interior Ministry said in a statement: “They were mostly clandestine immigrants trying to reach Spain, coming from Banjul in Gambia.” Attempts to reach the Canary Islands from West African countries have increased in recent years, because authorities have cracked down on crossings to Europe from Libya. Some 158 people are known to have died so far in 2019, trying to reach the Canary Islands, according to the IOM, against 43 last year. Survivors of the latest sinking told the IOM that there were at least 150 people aboard, including women and children. Dia Alpha Sonoko, a Sen-

egalese man who survived the sinking, told Mauritanian TV that smugglers had abandoned the migrants at sea. Yet the financial cost of this attempted illegal migration was around 760 euros per person. An IOM spokeswoman said that those in need of treatment were transported to a Nouadhibou hospital. Statistics reveal that at least one out of every 54 migrants who tries to reach Europe or Spain does not make it. Sadly, Mauritanian authorities confirmed that they had recovered the bodies of four more migrants, who drowned when their vessel sank near shore yesterday, bringing the death toll to 62.

Downhill all the way, on the huge Christmas slide CHILDREN and adults are already enjoying one of the great novelties of Christmas this year in Santa Cruz… a large slide in the shape of a snow mountain, and around eight metres high.

Santa Cruz Mayor Patricia Hernández inaugurated the slide in the best possible way, trying it for herself, along with other Santa Cruz councillors. “At 24 degrees and ‘snow’ in Santa Cruz, with a novelty in the Canary Islands, I think it will be the star attraction for the little ones,” said the Mayor. “But this is for all ages and I hope parents and children go down this super track.”

The attraction is in the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena, and the price is three euros for three launches in a single tyre, or five euros

Gran Canaria caught up in a sand storm…

for a double. It will remain in the Tenerife capital until 7th January, and opening hours are from 10am-2pm, and from 4pm-10pm.

The installation has three 35-metre-long tracks and is eight metres high. The surface has been built with the same material as used in

the UK ski slopes, where there are no natural slopes. Félix Luengo, manager of the Multiocio company, which owns the slide and is originally from Granada, said: “It is the first time we have taken the attraction outside the Peninsula,” and he believes it will be a “success”. This company also has other attractions, such as an ice rink, a Christmas fir forest, and a ferris wheel, among others. “We believe that, here, we can become a reference for all of Spain,” said Félix. “It’s the best Christmas market and, in addition, we are at a better temperature.” The City Council has planned more than 130 activities in its Christmas holiday programme, which opened with traditional lighting.

Paraglider dies and another person suffers bad injuries A PARAGLIDER, still unidentified, died on Monday afternoon after suffering a bad fall in Adeje’s Taucho area.

THE Western Sahara Resource Watch (WSRW) has criticised Gran Canaria’s Mogán municipality for buying sand from the area. “The maintenance work on the Mogán beach began on 2nd December, and, controversially, the municipality ordered tons of sand from Western Sahara to renovate the tourist spot,” wrote the NGO on Wednesday. WRSW, which claims to have documented the arrival of the first trucks

with sand, transported to Mogan from the Arinaga Harbour, argues: “The purchase contributes to finance the illegal Moroccan occupation of the former Spanish colony.” It also says the sand masses were transported on board the Dura Bulk vessel. The pro-Polisario NGO’s reports come as similar ones concerning a phosphate cargo ship in New Zealand emerged last month. The two parties, collaborating with a trade union in the country, threatened to besiege the ship, which was carrying phosphate rocks from OCP’s subsidiary in the Sarah town of Bou Craa.

The following day, another paraglider fell in the same area, suffering fractures to his arms and legs. The deceased’s accident happened at 1.11pm when the Emergency and Security Co-ordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert. A helicopter was despatched because it was a difficult place to access, and rescuers left the aircraft to immobilise the wounded man, and hoisted him to the helicopter. After medics verified that he was in cardio-respiratory arrest, he was resuscitated on his way to the heliport of Adeje’s Volunteer Firefighters. On the ground, the SUC staff found that the paraglider

was still in cardiac arrest, so they continued advanced CPR, unfortunately with no result, and confirmed his death. The Guardia Civil remained in charge of the body, until the arrival of the judicial authorities, who instructed the corresponding procedures. The second paraglider, aged 58, was injured, accidentally, when he fell down the sloping side of the ravine, while paragliding at the recreational area of Ifonche.

Adeje fire-fighters, along with the rural Guardia Civil, collaborated with the helicopter rescue services to save the victim from where he fell, which was also in a precarious place. Once safely inside the emergency helicopter, he was taken to a Fañabe helipad, where an ambulance team awaited his arrival. The man was stabilised, then taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment and observation.

Over 200 migrants rescued at weekend

MORE stringent policing in northern Morocco is pushing would-be migrants to attempt the journey to the Spanish archipelago.

Some 207 people have been rescued from three boats in waters near Spain during the past weekend. A vessel carrying 37 migrants, including 10 women and four minors, arrived at 8.10pm on Saturday in Fuerteventura, at Tuineje’s Gran Tarajal pier,

according to the Canaries’ Red Cross Operations Centre. Another 80 individuals were assisted by Spanish sea rescue services last Sunday morning, when they were discovered in the Strait of Gibraltar, aboard a wooden boat.

And at around 6.30pm the same day, 90 migrants were rescued from a vessel near Alborán island and taken to the Granada port of Motril, some 45 nautical miles away. There were at least five minors in this group. The spike in migrant arrivals to the Canary Islands has stretched

resources at regional shelters. A lack of beds has forced authorities to book several rooms at a hotel in Las Palmas for migrant women, who are pregnant or caring for small children. There are also 200 beds at temporary migrant shelters in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Adeje group sold drugs in the south EIGHT people, comprising six men and two women, all aged between 30 and 39, have been arrested on suspicion of drugtrafficking in South Tenerife.

Four of them have criminal records, relating to organised criminal activities, as well as drugs. An intense investigation carried out by the National Police began in August, when officers stumbled across signs of drug-trafficking, while involved in another probe. The evidence enabled officers to delve deeper, discovering another criminal gang, operating mainly in South Tenerife. Their main activity was the buying and selling of cocaine and hashish. Investigating officers discov-

ered that an Adeje house was the gang’s main headquarters, from where they distributed the drugs. Large volumes of illegal substances were sold from the premises, while smaller amounts were passed on to other members of the group, to sell at different sales points here in the south. Once the officers had collected sufficient evidence, the eight suspects were arrested and taken to the police station for questioning, While they were in custody, the officers searched the house and recovered 200gm of pure cocaine, along with cutting agents, as well as 3.2kg of hashish, plus steroids. The police also found two cars and over €3,200 in cash. All eight suspects were presented before the courts, and one was held in prison, while the others were awaiting sentencing.

Brit trio detained after drug nearly kills child

POLICE have arrested a British couple, whose 17-month-old daughter nearly died after swallowing cannabis at their Marbella family home. The irresponsible pair allowed the tot access to their drug stash, at the upmarket property, and the sick child is

believed to have consumed cannabis resin. National Police officers searching the house found 250gms of cannabis, 25gms of hashish, syringes, a weed grinder and other drug paraphernalia. The young girl’s uncle was also detained, and it is not clear whether the family have yet appeared in court. A police spokesperson said: “Officers have arrested

two men aged 25 and 35, in Marbella, and a woman aged 34, all from the UK, on suspicion of a crime against public health and a crime of child abandonment. “The three suspects, the parents and uncle of the child, were in the property with the 17-month-old, and, in a moment of carelessness by them, she ingested cannabis they had in the house.”

Cruise ship’s Mayday, after its engine failure Gunman arrested, after hanging around a bank

A 40-YEAR-OLD man, identified as C. R. H. R, was arrested on Tuesday morning while loitering outside a Los Realejos bank. He was armed with a sawnoff shotgun and a small gun, with the intention of staging a hold-up inside. But Santa Cruz Local Police officers, who had been alerted, raced to the scene and arrested the would-be bank robber. The armed man was also armed with a criminal

record, having committed various crimes in the past. Officers also discovered that he was legally prohibited to have any type of weapon in his possession, even those with a licence. The police just reached the bank in time to prevent the villain from actually do anything. They seemed to feel that the criminal was hanging around, waiting for people to leave the premises before going inside to carry out what he intended to do. The news came from an unofficial source, but was later confirmed by Los Realejos Council.

DURING her 12-day cruise out of Southampton, via Tenerife, the P&O Ventura ship suffered engine failure, and the skipper was forced to issue a Mayday. On Sunday evening, after the large vessel departed from her scheduled port visit in Santa Cruz, the ship began drifting towards the north-east of the island. But its guests, never in any danger, were all kept updated. They were told that two tugboats were on their way to tow the ship back to Santa Cruz overnight.

The Ventura, supported by the tugs, returned to Santa Cruz Port on Sunday night, where it stayed, while the cause of its immobility was investigated. All services aboard were running as normal, and guests were updated, regularly, about the situation. According to the ship’s captain, the issue was down to condensation, which had seeped into the electrics, and, in turn, caused the main propulsion systems to be knocked out. However, the ship did still have the “bow thrusters” available. These are smaller propellers, which help with the ship’s manoeuvrability. The incident occurred as the vessel began sailing from Santa Cruz towards its

next port of call, Lanzarote’s Arrecife. But with the ship berthed back in Santa Cruz, Sunday’s call to Arrecife was cancelled, and it remained in port after arriving at around 8.15am on Monday. Investigations are set to continue along with repairs. Guests said the ship was expected to depart at around 9pm that day, heading for Lisbon. It was scheduled to call at the Portuguese port on Tuesday, before returning to her Southampton home port today (Friday). The P&O Ventura has a guest capacity of over 3,100 at double occupancy. She was delivered to the British-based cruise line in 2008, so is fairly new, compared with most major fleets.

Drink or drugs means Arona Christmas activities (part 1) big trouble for drivers

TENERIFE’S Guardia Civil traffic police have this week been clamping down on drink-driving, as well as drivers under the influence of drugs. Their vast road-safety campaign embraces mainland Spain, as well as the Canary and Balearic Islands. And officers will have carried out more than 25,000 controls every day this week, up to Sunday night, because of the volume of Christmas lunches and dinners being celebrated. Guardia officers have been setting up control points on

all different types of roads, at all times of the day and night, to curtail the number of drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Driving under the influence of either, or both, causes one-third of all fatal road traffic accidents on Spanish roads. Specifically, 19% of roadtraffic deaths last year could be attributed to illegal drug consumption, and 66% of drivers killed on the roads were found to have three or more times the legal limit of alcohol in their blood. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has underlined that the consumption of alcohol increases the probability of having an

accident, and also implies a greater risk of that accident being either fatal, or causing severe injuries. In addition to increasing road safety this Christmas in the island’s towns, the DGT has invited local councils of all towns with more than 25,000 inhabitants to join the campaign by setting up controls in their urban areas. Last year, 346 town councils throughout mainland Spain and the islands took part, carrying out more than 50,000 drugs and alcohol tests in all. So be warned: stay dry, and stay clean, if you’re driving anywhere at this festive time of the year.

…And do watch your speed! THE Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) uses a network of some 1,500 static and mobile radars, to control vehicle speed on Spanish roads.

Last year, the Guardia Civil’s traffic department carried out a total of 13.6m speed controls, leading to fines for 596,030 drivers. However, images of cars are not always captured by radars as soon as drivers go over the speed limit. It is generally assumed that there is a little leeway, but exactly how much is often a grey area. So, at what speed are radars actually triggered? Just ahead of the Christmas season, when roads are typically busy, the Guardia Civil has cleared up the question with a timely tweet, explaining the speeds at which their radars are activated: “Up to 100km/h,

add on 7 km/h. Above 100 km/h, add on 7%”. Speed violations on the roads attract fines of between €100-€600, the loss of between two and six points from a driver’s licence, and prison sentences of between three and six months.

Furthermore, according to the DGT’s latest road-safety statistics, corresponding to 2018, speed was the main factor in 301 fatal road-traffic accidents on urban and interurban roads, representing 22% of last year’s accidents.

Live lizards are posted to Germany, from Tenerife

Fan threatens teenaged lineswoman with ‘rape’

CUSTOMS Officers in Germany have rescued 39 live lizards in a parcel, sent from a Tenerife address.

These lizards are considered an endangered species, and, for this reason, the person who actually posted the animals will face a fiveyear prison sentence. According to the officers, based at the Saarbrücken borders, the parcel was passing through Customs at the international station of Speyer. It was then passed, routinely, through an X-ray machine to inspect its contents, which was when officers discovered the live animals. There was no stamp, indicating that the parcel contained live animals; just a stamp stating that the parcel contained souvenirs. The officers, because of the find, had to open the parcel, then detach each lizard, one by one, as they were stowed inside the parcel

individually, to stop them from escaping. The parcel was destined to arrive at the home of a woman in North RhineWestphalia, Germany.

Instead, she will now receive a huge fine. Small lizards, and those not considered to be an endangered species, are allowed to be imported to Germany, but with the

relevant paperwork. The 39 lizards were taken to a special refuge to be checked over, and, surprisingly, they all survived the journey, without food or water.

Child-porn messaging group included minors NATIONAL Police have led an international operation against child pornography, which ended with 33 people being detained, including some from Tenerife capital Santa Cruz. Seventeen arrests have been made in mainland Spain, with nine more people being investigated. Their average age is just 22, since 14 of them are minors. One of the detainees, a 21-year-old Bulgarian, fled Italy when a search was carried out at his house, at the request of the National Police. He ran off to Spain, not realising it was the very country seeking him, and he was arrested at a relative’s house in Madrid’s Salamanca. Those arrested shared paedophile content, along with other material of extreme violence, through Children in Spain, which had formed an international child-porn messaging group. It was an instant-messaging chat, in which they made “stickers”, showing sexual abuse of young children. As well as Santa Cruz, other arrests in Spain were carried

out in the provinces of Las Palmas, Madrid, Valladolid, Murcia, Valencia, Palencia, La Rioja, Cuenca and Salamanca, while those investigated are living in Madrid, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real, Alicante and Valencia. The investigation was sparked by citizen collaboration, through information received via email at denuncias.pornografía.infantil@policia.es In total, the police operation involved 11 countries on three continents. Operation Chemosh, which lasted 26 months, was carried out by the National Police’s Central Cyber-

crime Unit, in collaboration with Interpol, EUROPOL and the police forces of Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Guatemala, India, Italy, Pakistan, Peru, the UK and Syria. An email received by police warned that a WhatsApp group, formed by minors, normalised the existence of paedophilia and sexual abuse of other minors. They shared files with paedophile content, sometimes extremely serious, together with other content, which, though legal, was not suitable for minors because of its extreme harshness. Some chats involved foreign adult paedophiles, who exchanged material on this subject, which made the police work even more difficult. Operation Chemosh was initially conceived, not only as a blow against child pornography in Spanish-speaking chat rooms, but also as an attempt to prevent young Spaniards from coming into contact with paedophile material and dangerous adults. The detainees in Spain, who belong to all social and cultural strata, do not fit a specific

profile, except that they are all male, and most of them are young. Given their youth, and taking into account the seriousness of the acts committed, it was sometimes decided not to arrest those involved. But they were put under investigation, in conjunction with their legal guardians. Most of those under suspicion had their mobile phone terminals in the name of their parents, who, therefore, were also investigated to rule out their involvement. Of those investigated in Spain, 14 are minors and another seven are under 25. The youngest arrested is a 15-yearold person. On Canary Island La Palma, police officers arrested a 19-year-old, who had been initiated into the world of paedophilia through comics, depicting abused minors. He then went on to search, actively, for underage sexual material. But he was not usually an active member of paedophile groups, for fear of arrest, even though he encouraged other members to share his paedophile material.

A REGIONAL football match in Fuerteventura was marred by a spectator’s appalling rape threats, directed at a teenage lineswoman (now known as a referee’s assistant), which forced players to intervene. The fixture between CD Chilegua and UD Jandia, descended into chaos after a fan accosted the young official. Local media reported that the man told the 16-year-old: “If I catch you outside, I will rape you.” The threats and violent gestures continued until players came over and had the supporter thrown out. It was the latest incident to have disrupted football in the Canary Islands. Three Cordoba supporters were seen shouting death threats at officials, after a hottempered game against CD Femarguin in Gran Canaria. And football authorities are said to be considering a hefty punishment for Jandia, after their fan’s action towards the teenager. Earlier in the season, the same club’s president, coach and a player were banned after supporters threw projectiles and invaded the pitch. The local football federation released a statement, saying: “We condemn this type of sexist attitude, that in no way benefits the full integration of women into sports, and the practice of football, without physical and verbal violence. “Both the federation and their referees’ committee believe that actions of this nature only scare away young people interested in refereeing. “We express our total solidarity and support to our colleague in Fuerteventura, who was the victim of abusive treatment by a fan.”

Man sold drugs in the bar downstairs

ARRECIFE National Police have arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of selling illegal drugs to customers in a bar beneath his home. An investigation was launched after a complaint was made to police over the number of teenagers, who had been caught in possession of drugs. Officers, who uncovered the operation after monitoring the area, carried out a raid on the suspect’s home, where hashish and money was discovered. The suspect has been placed on remand, ahead of a trial.

BANKSY’S new creation, a stunning artwork, depicts a poignant message about homelessness this Christmas. The painted mural appeared yesterday (Thursday) on a brick wall in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. And a video the fabled artist posted on his Instagram page tells an emotional story of a homeless man called Ryan. As Birmingham Live reports, Ryan has a drink in the footage and settles down on the bench by the wall. The camera pans outwards and shows a pair of reindeers, appearing to spirit him away into the star-filled sky. It is believed that Banksy disguised himself as a workman to complete the installation. Martin Clarke, a jeweller at nearby Vault 88, said: “I saw a small tent with a couple lads in high-vis vests early in the morning last Friday. I thought they were from the council and were just doing a bit of upkeep. “About half-six, I looked out the window and the tent had gone, as had the lads. Then I saw it. I thought it was great. We weren’t sure what it was at first, or who did it, but we had a good idea.” And a message on the fabled artist’s instagram said:

Banksy’s tribute to homeless, at this time of year

“God bless Birmingham. In the 20 minutes we filmed Ryan on this bench, passersby gave him a hot drink, two chocolate bars and a lighter, without him ever asking for anything. #Banksy.” Other business owners and twitter-users shared their joy. Phil Simpkin, manager of the Stone Room, said: “It’s fantastic

for the area, and a big boost. Hopefully, more people will come to the Jewellery Quarter to see the mural.” Stand Agency tweeted: “Drawing attention to homelessness this #Christmas in Birmingham in his trademark hard-hitting fashion. “It’s also heart-warming to hear about the kindness and

generosity of people walking past, as this was being filmed.” Another account said: “God Bless #Birmingham #Banksy highlights #homelessness.” Banksy is an anonymous, England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director, active since the 1990s.

AROUND 50 people are thought to have been touring New Zealand’s uninhabited White Island following its volcano eruption last Monday. At least five died and 30 were wounded, some critically ill with burn injuries. And police believe that anyone who might have been found alive had been evacuated. A naval ship is set to approach the island, which has yet to be searched because of the risks to rescuers, with smoke and ash continued to rise above the island after daybreak on Tuesday. Tourists were seen walking inside the crater of White Island volcano, moments before it erupted. But the latest police update says: “Based on our information, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island.” White Island, also called Whakaari, is the country’s most active volcano. Despite that, the privately-owned island is a tourist destination, with frequent day tours and scenic flights available. Deputy Police Commissioner John Tims told reporters: “Both New Zealand and overseas tourists were believed to be involved.” Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said: “I know there will be a huge amount of concern and anxiety for those who had loved ones on or around the island at the time.” But she assured them: “The police are doing everything they can.” White Island erupted at around 2.11pm, sending up a thick plume of ash and smoke, which was filmed by visitor Michael Schade, who was on a boat leaving the island after a morning tour.

He told the BBC he had been at the crater just 30 minutes before the disaster, adding: “We had just got on the boat… then someone pointed it out and we saw it. Basically. I was just shocked. The boat turned back and we grabbed some people who were waiting on the pier.” Another witness, Brazilian Allessandro Kauffmann, said in an Instagram post in

Portuguese that his boat had left five minutes before the eruption. “The other tour arrived right after, but, unfortunately, did not manage to leave in time, and some people suffered serious burns,” he said. A live feed from the volcano showed a group of visitors inside the crater, before the stream went dark. Up to 20 people are believed to have been injured, several

of whom were brought by helicopter to Whakatane, the nearest town on the mainland, reported Reuters news agency. There are few details about those caught in the eruption. Some who had gone to the island were passengers from the Ovation of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. It left Sydney last week and stopped near Auckland, on New Zealand’s North Island,

before arriving in the city of Tauranga, near White Island, on Sunday. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australians “had been caught up in this terrible event,” adding that authorities “were working to determine their wel-lbeing”. A web page, set up by the New Zealand Red Cross for families to register missing loved ones, includes people from Australia, New Zealand, the US, India, Britain and other European countries. Geological hazard monitors GeoNet pass on information about the volcano’s activity to tour operators and the police. But tourists make their own decisions about whether to visit. Visitors are supplied with hard hats and gas masks to protect against sulphurous steam, and they must have suitable footwear to make the tour, according to New Zealand website Stuff. The previous Tuesday. GeoNet warned of a heightened level of activity at the site, but it also said: “The current level of activity does not pose a direct hazard to visitors.” White Island has seen several eruptions over the years, most recently in 2016, but no one was hurt then.

Lanzarote warms to the Fire Mountains! THE Canary Islands comprise mainly of extinct volcanoes, although Lanzarote remains seismically active.

Around one million Britons visit Lanzarote each year, making it one of the UK’s favourite holiday islands. And though most people are happy to lounge around on the beaches, there is much to explore inland, in the dramatic, volcanic landscape, decorated intricately by the island’s favourite artist, Cesar Manrique. In the south of the island, the Montañas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) are full of activity and firmly on the tourist trail. Lanzarote’s landscape was last rearranged, substantially, by the forces of nature as recently as the 18th century, when the Fire Mountains sprouted. Officially, they are currently dormant, but at the raised area known as Islote de Hilario, your tour guide may pour water into a fissure, and, a split-second later, you can witness a spurt of steam. If you fancy a visit, you should take part in an organised tour to minimise risks.

El Corte Inglés bids to refinance €2.3bn debt

JUST two years after striking a deal with its lenders, El Corte Inglés is looking to refinance its €2.3bn debt.

There is no suggestion that this is a panic move, but the company simply believes it can reduce interest payments because rates are now much lower. Also, it can raise funds by

issuing additional bonds to private investors. In the end, it hopes to move to €1.2bn in long-term loans, and the balance in shortterm borrowing, which can be quickly replaced, if needed.

Brothel simply wasn’t up to scratch for a customer A MAN was arrested in Madrid last week after attempting to burn down a brothel, because he was dissatisfied with the service!

The National Police reported that the 59-year-old man, after coming out of one of the brothel’s rooms, began threatening workers about his

terrible experience with three women. He then stormed out of the Calle Illescas premises and headed to a nearby petrol station, where he filled up a 3-litre fuel container, before returning to the property. The disgruntled man then went back inside, shouting “I’m going to burn you,” before pouring the flammable liquid across the floor. Thankfully, the police had already been notified by a

taxi-driver who had spoken with the man when he bought the petrol. The assailant told him exactly what he intended to do with the fuel, but the quick-thinking driver followed him in his car. Officers arrived at the scene just in time, walking into the brothel before the man could light a match. The man, who has an extensive criminal history, was then arrested and remanded in custody.

Drunken best man hit his brother’s new wife BEST man Tomos Rhydian Wilson went on a drunken rampage at his brother’s wedding and assaulted the bride, her mother and sisters, a court heard.

Wilson lost his temper at the reception, saying his sibling should never have married his new sister-in-law. He threw punches at bride Erin Mason-George, and even grabbed her by her wedding dress, pulling her down stairs, a court heard. District Judge Gwyn Jones found Wilson, who was working as a prison officer at the time, guilty of five assault charges, as well as two charges of criminal damage. The 29-year-old, who was the best man at the wedding, had assaulted Erin, two of her sisters and her mother, as well as a manager at Lampeter’s Falcondale Hotel, Wales. Prosecutor Kevin Challinor said that on 27th July, Wilson, of Swansea, had reacted angrily when the family tried to get his bridegroom brother Steffan to go to bed as he was drunk. But while they tried to help him upstairs, Wilson started hurling abuse at the MasonGeorge family, it was claimed. He said his brother should never have married Ms Mason-George, and that he was “no longer a Wilson”, the court was told. Ms Mason-George told the trial that things escalated with Wilson trying to throw punches at her. She said he grabbed her wedding dress and pulled it, causing her to fall down a flight of stairs. Mr Challinor told the hearing that during the incident, Wilson assaulted Ms MasonGeorge’s mother, Linda, and her younger sister Dion, and also grabbed Ms Mason-George’s other sister,

Cally, by the neck, causing reddening. Wilson was additionally charged with damaging the hotel manager’s shirt, as well as fixtures and fittings at the Falcondale. He denied all charges, and defence solicitor Tom Roberts said the incident had been sparked by Ms MasonGeorge and her family. He told the court that Wilson had reacted after seeing Ms Mason-George first slap and swear at his brother, before seeing her and her family assisting Steffan up the stairs, where he claimed Ms MasonGeorge had pushed him, causing him to fall. District Judge Jones said that while none of the MasonGeorge family suffered longlasting injuries, “the thoughts and bad memories of what should have been a happy event will be there for some time”. Wilson was subjected to a 12-month community order, and will have to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £250 compensation to Erin and Cally Mason-George, as well as £100 each to Dion and Linda Mason-George, and another person. In addition, costs of £960 and a victim surcharge of £90 were also imposed.

Going green with envy, over these Northern Lights!

15 CW

World’s most expensive Christmas tree, in Spain

The Northern Lights’ spectacular green, dancing waves in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard

NOW that the days are getting shorter, hundreds of thousands of people on earth, possibly millions, will be checking the daily forecast to see if they have a chance of catching the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. And why not? Residents in parts of Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile were watching the evening skies six months ago, eagerly, in the hope of gaining a

rare glimpse at the southern version, the Aurora Australis. Even though they usually appear in the depths of winter, three years ago in September they were so bright that one night, over Iceland, the whole of its capital, Reykjavík, turned off the street lamps and domestic lighting, because people didn’t need them. All types of legends, especially in Nordic mythology, offered their theories as to what the Aurora Borealis really was: Spirits that came out only at night? Dancing in the sky? Celestial battles? The glint from the Valkyrian maidens’ armour as they led the souls of slain warriors chosen by

Odin and Tyr to Valhalla? Perhaps! But having studied the Northern Lights since the 17th century, scientists have put paid to all these romantic notions by revealing that they’re all about electrical currents. Up in the ionosphere, some 100km (60 miles) above the Earth’s surface, when a flow of charged particles from the sun reaches the atmosphere of our planet, they are drawn towards the Poles. Here, they collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere and explode into a series of spectacular green, dancing waves, or sometimes rainbow-coloured, like the ones in Lietzen, Germany.

THE Kempinski Hotel Bahia, in the Costa del Sol area of Estepona, has erected what is believed to be the world’s most expensive Christmas tree. It is said to be worth €11.9m, and is decorated with pink, red, white and black diamonds and other precious stones, as well as a mixture of remastered, expertly-upcycled jewellery, from world-famous brands such as Bvlgari, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Chanel.

Alongside the precious stones on the 3½-metre-high tree are exclusive Martini glasses, feathers, perfume bottles and even 3D-printed chocolate peacocks, as well as traditional decorations like snowflakes, fairies and spectacular hand-decorated baubles, carefully curated with a mixture of materials, from diamond dust and 24 carat gold, to emu and ostrich eggs. The hotel combined with British haute couture designer Debbie Wingham to bring the extravagant project to fruition.

13-week-old foetus found dead, next to rubbish bin A 13-WEEK-OLD foetus, found dead next to a rubbish container, was discovered by a local resident in the central district of Madrid. The man had been taking his rubbish out, early last Saturday morning, and spotted a blood stain, next to a plastic bag by the bins. He decided to open it, and was shocked at what he saw. He contacted the Local Police immediately, and they

alerted the Judicial Police Brigade’s Homicide agents, as well as the Scientific Police. A judge, subsequently, authorised the transfer of the remains to the Anatomical Forensic Institute, also in Madrid. According to daily newspaper El Mundo, initial investigations suggested that the foetus had not long been in the bag. Police are investigating the area to try to find out if a local woman, following an abortion, deposited the foetus by the bins on Costanilla street, in San Vicente.

Spanish classified site criticised for sexy ad MILANUNCIOS, a Spanish online website, has been hounded after a “disgusting” advert, published on its classified section. It read: “Sexy housekeeper wanted. The job consists of cleaning a house twice a week, two hours a day. Indispensable in lingerie.” The job description goes on to suggest that prospective employees would be well paid, with a cash bonus if there is “sex”. The job description highlights

that the “sexy housekeeper” should be between 20 and 40, in good physical shape, have firm breasts and be attractive. It also stresses that “ugly women” should abstain from applying for the position. The ad has been described by readers as “denigrating” and “disgusting,” among other things. And though it was removed by the Milanuncios portal, the Twitter account “Mierda Jobs” (S*** Jobs), has uploaded a snapshot of it, which continues to cause a stir, along with widespread condemnation on social media.

Spain’s electricity bills third highest in Europe

SPAIN is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for electricity, according to Eurostat figures. The data shows that Spain has the third-highest electricity tariff in absolute terms. Only Ireland and Belgium have higher power prices, while Spain is considerably more expensive than the Ukraine, which has the cheapest electricity. In addition, Spain is ranked

second in Europe for increased electricity costs over the last decade. The kilowatt-per-hour tariff has gone up by an average of 70% since 2008, from €0.1123 to €0.1889. This included a particularly steep rise in power charges between 2008 and 2012. When the Spanish electricity sector was privatised in 1998, the market was in the hands of three big power suppliers. Today, however, there are more than 350 companies operating in the country.

Doctor helps British hiker beat death when her heart stops beating for six hours

A BRITISH woman, whose heart stopped beating for six hours, was brought back to life in what doctors have described as an “exceptional case”.

Audrey Schoeman developed severe hypothermia when she was caught in a snowstorm while hiking in the Spanish Pyrenees with her husband last month. Doctors say it is the longest cardiac arrest ever recorded in Spain. Mrs Schoeman, who has made a near-full recovery after the ordeal, says she hopes to be hiking again by spring. The 34-year-old, who lives in Barcelona, began having trouble speaking and moving during severe weather in the Pyrenees, later falling unconscious. Her condition worsened while awaiting the emergency services, and her husband, Rohan, believed she was dead. Mr Schoeman told Catalan channel TV3: “I was trying to feel a pulse, but I couldn’t feel a breath… I couldn’t feel a heartbeat!” When the rescue team arrived two hours later, Mrs Schoeman’s body temperature had fallen to 18c and, upon arrival at Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron Hospital, she had no vital signs. But the low mountain temperatures, which made Mrs Schoeman ill, also helped to save her life, said her doctor, Eduard Argudo. “She looked as though she were dead, but we knew that, in the context of hypothermia, Audrey had a chance of surviving.” Hypothermia had protected her body and brain

from deteriorating while unconscious, added the doctor, despite also bringing her to the brink of death. “If she had been in cardiac arrest for this long at a normal body temperature, she would be dead.” In a race against time, doctors treating Mrs Schoeman turned to a specialised machine, capable of removing blood, infusing it with oxygen and reintroducing it to the patient. Once her body temperature had reached 30C, they used a defibrillator to jump-start her heart, some six hours after emergency services had been contacted. She was released from hospital just 12 days later, with only some lingering issues with the mobility and sensitivity of her hands, because of the hypothermia. There have been other cases of adults and children surviving for long periods in extremely cold temperatures, then being slowly re-warmed in hospital using specialist equipment. But there is always a risk of brain damage. In Mrs Schoeman’s case, although extremely dangerous, the cold proved to be a blessing. The freezing tem-

peratures appear to have slowed down her heart, blood pressure and breathing to extremely low levels, while protecting the brain from damage. “We were very worried about any neurological damage, given there are practically no cases of people who have had their heart stop for so long and been revived,” added Mr Argudo. After her recovery, miracle woman Audrey said she had no memory of the six hours. “I didn’t really know what was going on, in my first day or two when I woke up in intensive care,” she said. “But, since then, I’ve been trying to read more, obviously learning more about hypothermia, and it feels really incredible that I survived it.” Mrs Schoeman, fully aware that she is lucky to be alive, paid tribute to hospital staff. “It’s like a miracle, except that it’s all because of the doctors,” she said. She probably won’t return to the mountains this winter. “But I hope that in Spring, we will be able to start hiking again,” she said. “I don’t want this to take away that hobby from me.”

Heartless person tried to steal disabled woman’s wheelchair A CALLOUS man attempted to steal a disabled woman’s wheelchair, tipping her out of the seat on a train in Phoenix, Arizona.

The woman tried desperately to hold on, but was thrown on to the floor by the suspect. Other passengers

intervened, and, following a manhunt, 26-year-old Austin Shurbutt was detained by police. He was seen running from the scene, wearing “reindeer” slippers, while shocked travellers retrieved

the wheelchair. The incident took place as the train pulled into the station at 12th Street and Jefferson at around 3.40pm on Black Friday. The man was arrested a week later, after an appeal, shared widely across social media. The would-be thief, who had two outstanding warrants, also faces charges of robbery, kidnapping and assault.

SEVEN Celtiberian bronze helmets, stolen from the Zaragoza town of Aranda de Moncayo in the 1980s, were returned to Spain last week in excellent condition. Celtiberia was a mountainous district of ancient Spain, and their current owner passed them over in an official ceremony at the Paris headquarters of UNESCO. The pieces, dating from between the 3rd and 6th Centuries BC, come from the Celtiberian city of Arátikos, built during the Iron Age and destroyed by the Roman army in the 70s BC. By now, they will have travelled to Spain to join a permanent collection at the Zaragoza Museum, where they will be studied by archaeologists, before going on public display. The handing-over of this small collection brings a happy ending to a sorry story after Ricardo Bienvenido Granada and Mariano Florentino Ostale, inhabitants of Aranda del Moncayo, were last year found guilty by the Provincial Court of Zaragoza of having looted more than 5,000 celtiberian artefacts from Zaragoza and Soria over the past 20 years.

Iron-Age bronze helmets handed back to Spanish

17 CW

The helmets’ current owner, Briton Christian Levett, a philanthropist, collector and creator of the Museum of Classical Art of Mougins (MACM), near Nice, personally delivered them to Román Fernández-Baca, the Director General of Fine Arts of the Ministry of Culture. “The city and necropolis of Arátikos was subject to a slow, systematic and constant plundering that lasted for decades,” said Fernández-Baca. “And that could, unfortunately, not be prevented at the time, despite the numerous warning flags raised.” Levett acquired the helmets during an auction at Germany’s Hermann Historica auction house in 2008 and 2009, without knowing at the time that they were stolen goods. Having had them restored, the collector exhibited them from 2011 onwards at the Mougins Museum, where they have been visible to both the public and researchers. However, as soon as the sentence against Granada and Ostale was made public, and the origin of the helmets made known, Levett, aided by Archaeology professor Ricardo González Villaescusa, began negotiations with the Aragon Government for the return of the artefacts.

MAKE sure you understand the current pension issues that could affect you, and the potential opportunities. 1. Many pension providers are vulnerable Millions of Britons have “final salary” (“defined benefit”) company pensions, where an employer pays a fixed percentage of salary, throughout retirement. However, with prolonged, ultra-low interest rates and increased life expectancy, the cost of funding these benefits has soared. Companies struggling to afford promised payments risk collapse, as happened with BHS. Although the UK government’s “Pension Protection Fund” (PPF) offers a safety net, compensation is capped, so will not protect everyone.

NEW revelations, in an ongoing investigation into an international criminal ring, show that some of the shipments tested positive for listeriosis. An ongoing investigation into an international ring, which sold horsemeat unfit for human consumption, has turned up new evidence of crimes in Spain. In April 2017, the Guardia Civil arrested several members of a ring, believed to be run by Dutchman Johannes Fasen. He was living in Calpe, in Spain’s Mediterranean region, and was wanted by French and Belgian authorities. Sources at Spain’s High Court said this network was alleged to have kept some of the horsemeat meant to feed the felines at the Virgo zoo in northern Spain. Instead, it was sold as beef products for human consumption. The meat was coming from the municipal slaughterhouse in Toreno (León), and horses used for this meat were sometimes ill, and did not have the necessary health controls required by law. The facility would, occasionally, open at night, so that these animals could be put down without the usual oversight.

Six things you need to know about pensions

2. Transfer values are unusually high To reduce pension liabilities, many companies are offering final-salary pension members unusually-large “transfer values”, to leave. Calculated as a multiple of the future pension payment, some payouts have increased from 20x, three years ago, to 40x, today, often hundreds of thousands of pounds. Carefully reinvested, such high pay-outs could provide a retirement income that exceeds the original, annual payment. Although transferring could potentially prove more beneficial than drawing a guaranteed pension for life, the reverse is more likely, so it is crucial to fully understand the risks and implications, before taking action. 3. Expatriates can access taxefficient opportunities Many expatriates benefit from transferring UK pensions to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS) or reinvesting

funds into more-tax-efficient arrangements for Spain.

This can also offer estate planning benefits and multicurrency flexibility. QROPS transfers are currently taxfree, if both you and the QROPS are based in the EU/ EEA (European Economic Area); otherwise, the 25% UK “overseas transfer charge” applies. If the UK extends this to the EU/EEA, post-Brexit, as many are speculating, there could be limited time to transfer, without tax penalties. 4. The lifetime pension allowance could catch you out Once combined UK pension benefits (excluding the State Pension) are valued over £1.055 million, they breach the lifetime allowance, triggering UK taxation of 55% when taken as cash, or 25% as income or transferred to a QROPS, regardless of residence. While £1.055 million sounds high, after decades of pension saving, employer

contributions and investment growth, you could go over, without realising it. Taking advantage of today’s high, final-salary transfer values, can also tip you over the threshold. Those close to the limit should explore HMRC “protection” options, or transferring to a QROPS, to avoid or reduce tax penalties. 5. Quality professional advice is essential Transferring is not a onesize-fits-all solution. It is critical to take personalised, professional advice, to establish if transferring is suitable for you, and navigate the complex options ahead. Transfers are also a key target for pension scams, so take extreme care, and only use a UK-regulated provider. For final salary benefits worth over £30,000 a year, the Financial Conduct Authority makes this compulsory, but it is advisable for anyone considering their pension options. 6. The window of opportunity may be closing

Pensions rules can change at any time, but with Brexit and a new UK government ahead, reform is much more likely. It is possible, for instance, that the government may make withdrawals more difficult for non-UK residents, or introduce extra taxation on overseas pension transfers, after Brexit. In any case, such high transfer values for final-salary pensions may not be available for long. It is sensible to review your pension arrangements, and consider what could work for you now, under current rules. Take personalised, specialist advice, to help ensure you can look forward to a financially-secure retirement, in the Canary Isles. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices, which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

managers. The probe showed that on 4th February, 2017, the Valmojado business in Toledo sent a Belgium establishment a shipment of meat products, all contaminated with listeriosis. According to the investigation, Belgium’s Federal Safety Agency raised the alarm after an inspector found the dangerous bacte-

ria in frozen meat, which had been shipped 23 days earlier from the Valmojado company, which had exported over 3,400kg of contaminated meat. As for the horsemeat sold to the Vigo zoo, a vet there noticed that part of the shipments was missing, adding up to as much as 400kg at a time. Despite asking the slaughterhouse about it, he received no reply. This meat was, allegedly, being held back by the criminal ring, who sold it for human consumption at a much higher price in other European countries. The ring used cash to bypass tax-agency controls, and switched each animal’s microchip, often using brutal methods, to make it look as though the horses had undergone the necessary health checks before reaching the slaughterhouse. Around 18,000 horses may have gone through the ring’s hands, representing annual benefits of around €20m, according to the investigation. In Italy, Europol seized several shipments of horsemeat for sale in two major supermarket chains. The meat had come from a slaughterhouse in Astorga (León) and contained prohibited substances such as phenylbutazone and ossiphenylbutazone.

Horsemeat from Spanish zoo sold to human beings

Wiretaps conducted by the Guardia Civil show that the scheme leaders referred to these animals as “sleeping or lying horses”. After being processed at a plant in Valmojado, Toledo, part of this illegal meat was then sold in other areas of Europe. Many of the animals came from northern Spain and Portugal originally, and

microchips were extracted without any thought for animal welfare. The new revelations are part of an ongoing investigation named Operation Gazel, which has ramifications in at least five countries. There are some 65 suspects, including breeders, meat-industry entrepreneurs, veterinarians and slaughterhouse

Service. The ‘last bastion of true public service’, says Pilger, the NHS was designed to give millions of people ‘freedom from fear’. He explores how the NHS has been influenced by the insurancebased healthcare system in the US that denies medical treatment to millions. Filmed in Britain and the United States, Pilger’s compelling film, his 61st, gives voice to those who warn that time may be running out in the battle to save both the NHS and the fundamental human right to medical care.

Meet The Street At Christmas In this episode Mark heads to the Welsh Valleys, where people are proud of their heritage, but where the decline of the mining industry has had a real impact on the community, leaving some people feeling less connected. Mark starts out in Aberdare market, hoping to make a big impact with his one-man flash-mob so he can recruit members for his next choir and show people how singing in groups can make people’s lives better. He meets Carol, who grew up in the Bahamas and settled in Aberdare 13 years ago with her Welsh husband. Unlike her home town where there was a strong community feeling, she mainly works from home and finds it lonely. Stay-at-home mum Carys, who looks after her two sons at home, also joins the team. He then gets in touch with ex-solider Carl who left the army to care for his disabled daughter, and Jules who has mobility problems and suffers from anxiety. Mark thinks that coming together to support each other could be just what this group needs, with lots of laughter along the way. With a performance looming, Mark brings his passion for singing to show these strangers how magical it can be coming together with those from different cultures and backgrounds and creating friendships that will last a lifetime.

Heston’s Marvellous Menu: Back To The Noughties

Heston’s Marvellous Menu takes an iconic restaurant back in time, with Giles Coren challenging Heston Blumenthal to re-create an extraordinary tasting menu from a pivotal year for his world-renowned restaurant, The Fat Duck. For this unique one-off event, Heston and his contemporary team reunite with original staff members to serve a historic tasting menu from 2001. With the Fat Duck dining room and kitchen redecorated overnight to match turn of the millennium styles, and an array of high-profile guests from 2001 walking through the door in period attire, Heston and his team must harness the knowledge, equipment and skills of yesteryear to serve perfect, mouthwatering examples of some of Heston’s most famous dishes. Packed with nostalgia and emotion, the programme interweaves the challenge of pulling off a culinary masterclass with the incredible personal story of Heston’s rise to become a British food superstar, alongside the deeper historical context, revealing how he and his food both shaped and mirrored recent British history.

Entertainment

13th December -19th December 2019

The most fun you can have, with your clothes on!

WE at Keddy’s Entertainment are constantly on the lookout for different and new innovative ideas, to feature and entertain you.

So we are delighted to bring you something entirely different, “Silent Adventures Tenerife”! If you want amazingly-good, family fun, and a fabulous new experience, then please look no further. So what on earth is this all about? Where has this all come from? Silent Adventures began in the heart of Edinburgh at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, where it was overwhelmingly received. This fabulous silent adventure has spread south, rythmically, an enigmatic ripple effect, culminating in a giant Mexican wave of fun and laughter, that has, fortunately, reached our heavenly shores of Tenerife. So what exactly is it? It’s a roving flash mob party. And what else? It’s a silent disco. What else? It’s a roaming, safe, well-organised, rhythmic extravaganza of silence, across the soundsoaked, sun-baked streets! It is hosted, led and run by our very own super, intrepid adventurers, the brightest and prettiest Keddy Pied Pipers, from Keddy’s Entertainment Tenerife - the fabulous, Jenny Tipton and Annie Feather. With fine-tuned, state-of-theart broadcasting technology, this musically-instructed adventure aims to have your funky moves on display, and your pop-star voices serenading the people of Tenerife. As any inhibitions fade away, and laughter takes over, you will be part of the best, all-dancing, all-singing, feelgood hour of the season. Silent Adventures is truly a wonderful time, one of escapism, happiness and good, old-fashioned fun! Dance like no one is watching, and sing like no

one can hear! It’s a great family-holiday, up-beat experience, suitable for all ages, creating holiday memories that will be talked about and last forever. A fun-packed experience for everyone. In fact, one 65-years-young member of our team so enjoyed herself on her maiden Silent Adventure, it’s now going to be, for her, a red-ringed, fixed, regular, calendar event for life! Not only is it amazingly-good fun, listening to popular theme songs, with a range of selected hits from start to finish, singing away as you so wish, you will soon be swept up into a truly-amazing, group-party, infectious atmosphere!

An added bonus is that it is such a marvellously-healthy adventure, burning those calories. However, everyone proceeds at his or her own pace, dancing, walking, singing or simply strolling along; do whatever floats your boat, as the music takes you! What stood out very much for us at Keddy’s Entertainment is that it isn’t easy to find an activity that all age groups can join in, enjoy and do together. I’m sure you will agree this can be slightly challenging, to say the least! We believe this fills a much-needed niche that has been outstanding in the Entertainment industry. Keddy’s Entertainment’s mantra is: “If the

children and teenagers are amused and happy, then the parents and grandparents are happy.” And we are happy! These silent-adventure tours can be personalised to suit requirements, from musical walking tours to fitness adventures, hen parties, children’s parties, wedding parties, Halloween parties and Christmas parties, and corporate-team events. As you can imagine, there is a whole raft of different adventures! So, with the Christmas-party season approaching, why not join us in the next Silent Adventure, perhaps after over-indulging during the festive season and New Year.

Silent Adventures will be a brilliant, fun, new, healthy start to 2020. That’s enough from us. Here are just a couple of reviews: “It is the best fun we have had, simply just walking around. Such laughter and I loved it. So pleased we did it.” “Our children wanted to do it all over again. The time flew past and everyone joined in, including our 14 year old. Great seeing everyone so happy. Thank you so much.” So why not book your next tour today and visit silentadventures.es? From us all at Keddy’s Entertainment, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a truly happy and healthy New Year.

‘Dangerous’ rapist clown sent to prison for 14 years

A CHILDREN’S entertainer has been jailed for 14 years after being convicted of raping a child under the age of 13. Robert Jamieson, 49, who goes by the stage name Bobby Bubbles in his clown outfit, was well known across Hull and East Yorkshire. But he has now been branded “dangerous” after being convicted of 10 historic, child-sex offences against the same girl. Jamieson groomed the girl, making her believe that she was in love with him. It was only when she had a child of her own that she was able to summon the courage to report what happened to her as a little girl. Prosecutor Gurdial Singh said: “It’s the fact that she could then relate to her daughter, and bring that back to what

happened to her. It made her think about what had occurred, which is what caused her to come forward. “She thought, ‘I don’t want this to happen to my daughter’.” The clown was hailed as “Hull’s own Batman”, after vowing to get rid of the killer-clown craze that swept the country in 2016. He said: “It is not nice to see children being scared and chased by these clowns, and I will step in if I have to. Kids have great imaginations and they need positive role models.” Jamieson added: “Clowns should be fun, but I want to be there as reassurance for them when they do feel scared. I will be there to look out for them. True clowns don’t wear masks.” He has now been jailed for 14 years after denying all the allegations, refusing to co-operate with police, and calling his victim ‘a liar’.

Alicante village up for auction, via online site

AN entire village is up for sale on the internet auction site, Wallapop, complete with 40 houses, mains electricity and water in place, a palace, a casino, a hermitage chapel, a post office, an olive-oil storage warehouse, and a flour factory!

Colonia de Santa Eulalia, about halfway between the towns of Villena and Sax, in the west of the Alicante province, is completely uninhabited, making it an excellent investment if you can afford it. And its palace is an official heritage site, which means it would be eligible for European Union funding to restore it and open it to the public as a visitor site or, perhaps, depending upon listed building requirements, a restaurant or hotel. The post office, part of Spain’s national Correos network, is empty because it no customers. Yet it could be a thriving entity again if the homes were let out, or sold off. The hamlet, which belongs

to Villena, Colonia de Santa Eulalia officially, was described in 1887 as “a firstclass farming colony”. It was owned by the Count of Alcudia, who wanted to build a “self-sufficient village”, in line with the worldwide, 19th century trend of western Europeans, for creating and extending a “socialist utopia”, or one where inhabitants were selfgoverned. Around this time, Colonia de Santa Eulalia reached its record population of 200 residents, and had a factory

making alcoholic spirits, which kept the village in work. The only drawback is that the €90m sale price is hardly within the average Wallapop-user’s budget! But as it’s an auction site, users can make bids starting as low as they wish, which will be rejected if they are under the reserve price, or make direct offers to the seller. But should Colonia de Santa Eulalia find a buyer, it is likely to be a company seeking a long-term investment.

desk to get an update. “As we got there, the doors were closing,” said Jack. “The women at the desk said we’d missed our flight. “We were like, ‘Oh OK. How?’ It was all down to a complete lack of signage. There was no signpost for the normal queue. “One of the women said she’d radio through to try to get us on, but the departure people on the other end said No.” An employee at the desk then said a bus might be available to take the family to the plane, claimed Jack, who added: “The woman radioed through again and I heard her say, ‘I already told them you said No, so it’s down to you.’ “It was so rude. If she’d said to the departure people that there was a five-year-old waiting to go to Disneyland, it could have been different. We were really frustrated. If we’d got to the doors five seconds earlier, we would have made it.” Jack claims easyJet staff told him it had not completed a “last call” on the tannoy because

of a “silent airport” policy. But he said an employee at the Bristol Airport information desk then told him there was no policy against “last calls” in the airport. Jack also alleges the information desk later told him the gate had shut at 7.12am, but he said the gate closure occurred six minutes earlier. He added: “The guy on the desk offered us the 6.30pm flight tickets for £330 in total. When we didn’t accept that, he told us we could get it cheaper online. “He did not help in any way, shape or form, but I suppose he was the most helpful person there because, at least, he was giving us the truth.” Jack eventually booked the tickets online, costing a total of £244, on top of the £360 he paid for the initial tickets. And he was frustrated at missing a full day at Disneyland. “We’d woken up Oliver at 4am as a surprise,” he said. “He hadn’t known we were going. He had a bit of a cry when we left the airport that morning, but once we explained that we were

going to come back, he was excited again.” Jack believes the family is owed a discount on the tickets because he feels the fault for their missed flight lies with easyJet. But a spokeswoman for the airline said: “We are sorry to hear that Mr Gray and his family missed their flight. Unfortunately, they arrived at the gate after it closed, and all other passengers had boarded. “We held the gate open longer than usual, to try to accommodate any passengers who had not yet arrived, but the family did not present themselves during this time.” The spokeswoman added: “The gate team did everything possible to get the family to the aircraft, but it was too late. “At this time, our team offered to help Mr Gray and his family with alternative travel arrangements.” Bristol Live asked Bristol Airport on 9th December for a response to his complaints over signage. But the airport had yet to respond, as of 5.35pm the same day.

Family bewildered after missing flight to Disney A FAMILY were left devastated after missing their flight to Disney… because they stood in the wrong queue! The South Gloucestershire family has blamed a “complete lack of signage” after missing their flight from Bristol Airport to Paris, and cutting short a planned trip to Disneyland. Jack Gray booked a trip to Disneyland with his five-yearold son Oliver and partner, expecting to fly out on Monday morning. But despite getting to the airport at 4.30am, the family missed the departure after a three-hour wait because of confusion over the boarding queue. Jack said: “We were waiting for the fast-track passengers to board, but we hadn’t noticed that the normal passengers were queueing behind a pillar. It wasn’t signposted.” The 28-year-old mechanic ended up paying an extra £244 for seats on the 6.30pm flight to Paris, which

he branded “ridiculous”. Mangotsfield School pupil Oliver was left in tears, while his grandmother Helen said the family were devastated. Jack said: “We were checked in okay, and we were waiting around. At 6.50am, they released the gate number we needed.” Five minutes later, they saw a big sign for the fast-track queue, so they were under the assumption that they were doing fast-passes first. “It got to 7.05am and the board was saying the gate closed at 7am,” said Jack. “I thought they must be running behind.” At 7.06, with all people queueing through the gate, the family made their way to the easyJet

ALL-INCLUSIVE holidays at party hotspots such as Mallorca, being debated by politicians, could be banned under tough new measures to tackle troublesome tourists. The new rules would see balcony-jumping daredevils sent back to their own countries immediately, with draconian fines imposed on businesses found to be selling alcohol outside licensing hours. The zero-tolerance approach to badly-behaved visitors will target destinations popular with British holiday-makers, including stag-do favourites Magaluf, Playa de Palma and Sant Antoni. Under the new measures, bars selling after-hours booze could face crushing fines of up to tens of thousands of euros. Offending establishments may also be forced to close during the high season of June, July and August. Hotels will also be targeted as part of the drive, and they could face hefty fines if they fail to kick out disruptive guests. The sanctions mark a departure from the harm-prevention measures favoured previously by the Mallorcan Government, such as makeshift, first-aid units on

areas during the summer season. An Irish barman, at Zeppelin’s Live Music Bar, a popular Magaluf drinking hole, hadn’t heard of the new laws, but said he was concerned police might try to misinterpret them, to impose harsher fines.

K9 Animal News IT is never easy when couples break up and go their separate ways. Hearts are broken, and there is a lot of stress and uneasiness. Unfortunately, if there is a pet in the house, they usually suffer also, through no fault of their own. The couple do try to make it work for their pet, but, sometimes, this is not always possible either. Nearly two years ago, in February 2018, this beautiful boy was brought to K9, for this reason. Five-year-old Sani is a Boxer/ Presa mix. He is a large dog. He also has heartworm, which is being treated on an ongoing basis at K9. Sani has a lot of love to give, but has not been given the chance to show it. Why? Sani, like a lot of our dogs at K9, can be fearful of new people, especially men. When some new volunteers come to our kennels to exercise the dogs, they like to walk through and see the dogs we have, and slowly fall in love with them all. Sani, who lives in the end kennel, is the last to be seen,

“They never stop,” he said. “If it’s not the music they’ve got a problem with, it’s something else. But if you sell alcohol after hours, you should get fined… as long as the police don’t confuse drinking-up time with after hours. People get half-an-hour

to drink up, and it will be a problem if the police start coming in then.” Most other bar owners contacted were unaware of the debate on new laws, but they appeared unfazed by their potential impact. “I’ve never heard of them,” said the owner of Calvia’s JJ’s Sports Lounge. He added that he would catch up with the new measures when he returned from holidaying in Tenerife. The fresh crackdown on troublesome visitors comes as Mallorca tries to reinvent itself as a leading tourist destination, following the collapse of British tour operator Thomas Cook. The Balearic Island was disproportionately affected by the company’s failure in September, because 1.2m of the 16 million holiday-makers who visited Mallorca in 2018 travelled with Thomas Cook. The tough new rules are expected to be approved next month, and come into place next season.

and people automatically gravitate towards him. I am not surprised, for he is a truly handsome boy. If Sani does not know you, he will bark out of fear, but most people mistake this for aggression, which can, understandably, put people off. Do you want to get to know Sani, to discover how truly wonderful this boy is? Please come up and meet him in K9. Have patience with him, and let him get to know you. You will be so full of love for this

boy. Once he knows you, he is a great dog. He is very obedient, and always comes when you call him. He is a joy to walk, on and off the lead, and, when invited, he gives very good cuddles! When our volunteers take Sani for a walk, and put his lead on first in the kennel, he will take the lead in his mouth and almost bring you out of the kennels, as if to say: “Come on, lets go for a walk”. It is a very funny sight to witness, and this is one of the many qualities we love about Sani. He needs a second chance. He needs to be shown that there are kind, loving people out there, who want to give him a good home. He can be OK with some dogs, but not others, but he doesn’t really react to other dogs, unless provoked. If you are interested in getting to know Sani, and welcoming him into your home, please call up to K9, any day, between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you!

By Sharon Edens I PUT the Dementia Support Tenerife group together two years ago, after moving to Tenerife six years earlier with my Mum and Dad. Mum had Alzheimer’s dementia and Dad had vascular dementia, as a result of numerous mini-strokes. But I had been a dementia-specialist nurse in the UK and worked, latterly, as a regional manager for a carehome group. Its primary focus was on the development of Dementia Houses to provide a stimulating, yet sensitive, environment for those people needing full-time care. But while looking after my parents here, I found that there was a lack of services available to tap into, within the ex-pat community. I also noticed that many of the premises here were not “dementia friendly”, and this led to a good deal of searching for places to which I could take them, on a day or night out. Yet I felt that with my experiences, I could start the group on Facebook, and though there was some interest, life got in the way of developing my idea to support others, apart from online. But what you see today is down to me being contacted by a lady called Helen. She supports her ex-husband, who has Lewy Body dementia, and she had noticed that music and movement therapy sessions could have a beneficial effect on those living with dementia. Helen wanted to offer her services to host these sessions, as she has, for many years, worked within the entertainment/music industry. She found my group, and, as they say, the rest is history! What are the group’s aims? Our vision is to provide support for those living with the demen-

tia disease in Tenerife, and their carers. Often, those with a diagnosis become isolated because their friends stop visiting, believing there is no point. Many are elderly, many live alone, and many do not have family on the island. But our logo symbolises our group. We want the elephant to show that people living with dementia never forget… they just store and express information differently. The heart shows the love, warmth and compassion given by the group, and the balloons express our philosophies, providing support, encouragement and caring. What type of therapy sessions will you provide? They will comprise music and movement, which will be starting next month in Costa del Silencio. Also, there are plans to stage swimming sessions with a qualified instructor, as well as table-top gardening and craft sessions. And we have a lovely doggie, who can provide pet therapy. We also have plans to hold a Tea Dance a few times a year, and we are open to more suggestions. Who will provide this support? There are a core group of people who have come together, although we welcome anyone wishing to be involved. We all have a connection to demen-

tia in some way. Some are currently caring for loved ones, and some have performed this function in the past. In addition, some have professional experience in this area, while others just want to offer their skills. How can you support carers? By providing therapy-support sessions, these people will be able to bring along the person they are caring for, allowing them to interact with the session and others. They can then sit on the sidelines and have a cuppa and a chat with others in the same position. Believe me, this can be all the break you need some days! In addition, we can provide a “sitting” service, in which one of our supporters will stay at home with the person living with dementia, allowing the carer to do the shopping, get her hair done, go for a drink with friends, or just sit quietly on the beach, maybe, to recharge, by having some peace and tranquility. Just knowing there is someone a carer can contact, really is a support network needed here. We can also assist with translators. We have a few translators on board with us, hugely experienced in medical matters, especially dementia. Having consistency with dementia is so important, because you have to be able to understand the person living with the dementia, and listen to what the carer is saying. The two do not always agree! Carers also have to be very aware of the need for input from the group, and support for the carer, because this is one of the hardest diseases to care for, because you see the person you are caring for disappearing, day by day. What is dementia? It is a chronic or persistent disorder of the mental processes, caused by brain disease or injury, and marked by memory disorders, personality changes, and impaired reasoning. Is it different from Alzheimer’s disease? No. Alzheimer’s is one of the 400 types of dementia. It is, according to records, the most common, and can start in those aged just 40 to 50. How do the 400 types of dementia differ? Each dementia is caused by a different disease, or events which cause changes in the brain. And each dementia presents itself in different way, and has a different journey. For

example, Parkinson’s disease can often lead to Lewy Body dementia, which is down to protein deposits in the brain. Lewy Body dementia is an upand-down journey because one day, the person can appear to be functioning very well, and the next day, or even later in the day, they can be viewed as not being able to do anything. It can be so frustrating for carers if they don’t understand that this is the presentation of the journey. Sometimes, they can even believe the sufferer is “putting it on”. It can also be most frustrating for the people living with it, because they don’t understand why they are unable to carry out a particular task. Vascular dementia, which is the second-highest type recorded, is normally caused by strokes or mini-strokes. This dementia occurs normally in stages. The person can go through plateaux, and then have a decline in cognitive ability, without showing symptoms of further strokes. Korsakoff syndrome is a type of brain disorder, caused normally by excessive alcohol intake. Symptoms may include confusion, changes to the eyes and vision, as well as exaggerated story-telling, among others. Can dementia be cured? Frustratingly, medical science has so far been unable to find a cure. The truth is that there is unlikely to be a single “onepill-cures-all” treatment for the condition, because the brain-damage of dementia is caused by many different diseases. However, research continues to be aimed at reducing risk factors, in addition to slowing down the decline, and improving function and quality of life. Once diagnosed, this does not mean the person with the dementia cannot live a full and happy life within his or her abilities, which is what we aim to assist with. There are certain “dementias” in which the damage is done by a specific action, such as Korsakoff’s, in which a reduction in alcohol intake will reduce the continuation of brain damage, and some, which can be down to infections, and is, therefore, treated with antibiotics. But, sadly, “true” dementias are incurable. Will you be contributing to research? No! All funds raised will be directed at supporting those liv-

ing with dementia in Tenerife, and their carers. How can the community help? We need funds to provide these services because, although none of the support team will benefit financially from the group, and the roles of the Association are carried out voluntarily, there are costs involved for equipment etc, and, of course, the cost of the Association application. So how are you going to raise the funds needed? We are holding our first fundraiser tomorrow (Saturday, 14th December) at The Irish Oak in Torviscas, from 2pm until 6pm. We have live acts booked, and stalls selling all kinds of products, as well as various things going on throughout the day, such as a raffle, auction, teddy-naming, sweet jar, cakes, etc. It promises to be a fantastic day, and some superb prizes have already been donated. We hope the community will come along and dig deep, to assist us in raising enough funds to start the therapy sessions, provide much-needed support and go towards us getting Association status. We are aware that it is a big ask, and that there are many fantastic organisations already here in Tenerife, performing astonishing work for a variety of causes. But we are hoping to share some of the support Tenerife’s community and tourists also show to these. Will the group be available to locals, or is it just for ex-pats? So far, the contact has been within the ex-pat community, but we hope in time that the locals will also benefit. It is an ongoing project, which, we hope, will expand and embrace the whole community, who are in need, and can improve their quality of life by being involved. How can people contact the group? The group has a Facebook group and page, and, through this, private messages can be sent to ask for assistance. We have also set up a private group called Dementia Help Me Tenerife, which is where those caring for others can rant, speak freely about their feelings, etc, any time, night or day. And we can also give support in this way. There are contact numbers on the page for those who would prefer to speak with someone, rather than online. Anyone needing support can contact me, Sharon Edens, directly on 643 274 042.

Accion Del Sol News THE staff at the refuge are our very own angels, who work tirelessly to ensure that the dogs in our care are fed, and given the best life possible before being adopted. We would like to say a special thank-you for all their hard work and dedication. Presents for the doggies! With Christmas around the corner, we have again started a campaign after the success of last year, asking our friends and supporters of Accion Del Sol to donate a shoebox of goodies for the dogs. These can include tinned dog food for our older dogs and puppies, puppy milk, dog toys, dog collars and leads. and low in calories. They also contain a lot of water, which helps you stay hydrated. Avocados are great for cleansing your body from toxins, and so are cucumbers

and spinach! Apart from that, avocados are packed with antioxidants. Apples are rich in fibre, and reduce cholesterol, detoxify your liver, and help control your weight, which also makes this a great smoothie for weight loss. Do spinach smoothies taste bad? No. They don’t. The important thing is to find a balance between the flavours. If you add spinach, try using fruits you like, to make it to your liking. You will need a blender or a food processor to turn your ingredients into a smoothie. This only takes a few seconds (depending on how powerful your blender). Now peel the apple and cucumber, and dice both. Remove the stone from avocado. Sometimes the dates might be way too hard for the blender to process, so place them in a bowl, pour hot water over and let them sit for about five minutes, so they have time to soften. Chop them roughly. Throw everything in the food processor and blend until

smooth. This green smoothie is quite thick. If you don’t drink it right away, store it in the fridge. Ingredients *1 medium apple *1½ cups spinach, packed *1 cucumber *1 avocado *2 cups almond milk *8 pitted dates Instructions Peel and dice the apple and cucumber. Cut the avocado in half and remove the stone. Roughly chop the dates. Place all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. *If you own a powerful blender, you can keep the skins of the apple and cucumber on *Make sure you wash the fruit and veggies before using them *This recipe yields about four cups *Almond milk can be substituted with cow’s milk. *If your dates are hard and your blender not very powerful, soak them in hot water for a few minutes. The amounts and ingredients in this recipe can be adjusted to your liking.

By Val Sainsbury ECHINACEA is a group of flowering plants that belong to the daisy family, along with plants like sunflowers, chicory, chamomile and chrysanthemums. The leaves and roots of the plant have long been used in traditional medicine to reduce inflammation, and enhance immune function. It’s popular as a natural remedy, to reduce cold and flu symptoms like stuffiness, sneezing and sinus pressure. Does it work? Research has turned up mixed results on echinacea’s ability to reduce symptoms of the common cold. One review of 16 studies concluded that the herb was more effective than a placebo, at preventing and treating upper respiratory

Breathe easier with this plant infections like the cold. Another review of 14 studies found that it reduced the odds of developing the common cold by 58%, and decreased the duration of symptoms by 1.4 days. Similarly, in one study of 80 people, taking echinacea at the onset of cold symptoms reduced the duration of symptoms by 67%, compared with a placebo. In a review including nearly 2,500 people, echinacea extract was found to reduce the risk of recurrent respiratory tract infections, and decrease complications like pneumonia, tonsillitis and ear infections. Multiple test-tube and animal studies have also concluded that the extract may enhance immune function, by increasing the production of specific immune cells in the body. It could also help treat symptoms of the flu. In one study of 473 people with the flu, drinking an echinacea-based beverage was as effective as an antiviral medication at treating symptoms. A large review of 24 studies found that echinacea didn’t

significantly prevent cold symptoms. However, it did find weak evidence that this herb might reduce the incidence of the common cold. Potential side effects Although echinacea is generally considered safe when used as directed, it has been associated with potential side effects, including stomach pain, nausea, rash, difficulty

breathing and swelling of the skin. Additionally, while studies show that the herb can be used safely by women who are pregnant and breastfeeding, it should be used with caution, until more better-quality human studies are available. In children, echinacea may be associated with an increased risk of rash, which is why it’s often not recommended for

use in children under 12 years of age. Furthermore, if you have any underlying health conditions or take any medications, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider, before using echinacea. How to use Echinacea is widely available at health stores and pharmacies, and online in tea, tablet and tincture form. Although there is no official recommended dosage for echinacea extract, most studies have evaluated the effects of dosages of 4504,000mg daily, for up to four months. Many capsules and supplements contain one or two types of echinacea root, and are often combined with other ingredients like Vitamin C or elderberry. Echinacea tea is also available, which can contain up to 1,000mg of the root, per serving. Regardless of which form you choose, it’s best to start with a low dose and work your way up, to assess your tolerance. If you notice any negative side effects, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.

It’s that time of year again WITH Christmas and New Year approaching, there will be lots of parties, get-togethers and family gatherings. But while this can be a happy time of the year, drivers and pedestrians must be mindful of the dangers this season brings.

Of course, the most important is to remember the age-old saying: “Don’t drink and drive”, which is probably the most common-known and used slogan at this time. Some people are of the opinion that drinkdriving laws in Spain do not apply. But of COURSE they do. The levels of permitted alcohol in your blood system are extremely low, so you should be aware that, potentially, one drink, for example, a local measure of a gin-and-tonic, can easily take you over the legal limit. In Spain, you’re no longer considered fit to drive when your blood/ alcohol concentration exceeds 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (or 30mg for drivers with less than two years’ experience, and professional drivers).

Of course, alcohol plays a major part in a high percentage of road-traffic accidents, especially those happening late at night. There are many factors affecting when one would be over the limit. These include your age, sex, weight and the volume you normally drink. The police carry out random breath-tests on the side of the road, more so over the festive period, as residents will no doubt be aware. It is important to note that drunken driving can result in fines of €1,500, loss of points from your licence, or a

suspension. The worstcase scenario is a period in prison. Drivers who refuse to take a breath-test can be liable to a prison sentence of between 6-12 months, and a loss of six points from their licence. It is interesting to note that the same rules apply to cyclists, although, of course, loss of points does not apply! Another thing to consider is that if you have an accident while under the influence of alcohol, your insurance becomes null and void. The guilty person is then responsible for the payment of repairs and damages, as well

as medical costs of the third party (when one is involved). And if a fixed object is involved, such as lamppost, costs for repairs or replacement will be claimed against by the ayuntamiento against you. So rather than saying: “Oh, I’ll just have the one”, have a nominated driver who refrains from drinking, or take a taxi. That way, you can enjoy your Christmas, and, potentially, save yourself a lot of money and heartache. A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our clients and readers.

New coach, same result!

TENERIFE played their first game under new manager Rubén Baraja, and lost against a mediocre Malaga with their worst performance of the season.

Their situation is getting worse, and they now find themselves in the relegation places. Much will need to improve for them to survive this time around. Rubén Baraja changed little for his first starting XI. He reinstated Alberto, opted for the continuity of Javi Alonso, and tried to give prominence to Filip Malbasic. As for the rest, he wanted them to play with a desire to please their new coach against the possible nervousness of a Malaga side, in as much trouble as Tenerife. Malaga took the initiative from the start, but, it must be said, without much conviction. They had plenty of possession against a lack-lustre Tenerife, and half-hearted attempts from Pacheco, Adrián and Cifuentes, made it easy for keeper Ortolá. Tenerife showed nothing to start with, and didn’t even have any action in Malaga’s box, let alone a single shot. They tried to play down the right with Suso, who was by no means at his best. And Luis Pérez, who was trying to make things happen, saw no reward for his physical efforts. Malaga kept pushing forward, trying to find a breakthrough, but at this stage it was easy for Tenerife, defensively, to keep it at 0-0, until a corner in the 27th minute. As the ball was put over by Antoñin, it should have been easy for CDT’s back four to deal with. But the mistakes, which have dogged them all season, returned. They failed to deal with the situation effectively, and the loose ball fell to Malaga striker Sadiku, who struck a left-foot shot high into the roof of the net from six yards to put the visitors ahead. Until this point, Malaga had dominated with overwhelming possession (61% to 39%), and with four shots on goal, against none from Tenerife. But the home side persisted and had their first direct shot after 43 minutes through Malbasic, who forced a good save from Munir. The second half started very much the same as the first, with Sadiku almost doubling Malaga’s lead. He struck a good shot from 20 yards

Malaga CF 2 CD Tenerife 0

out, but Ortolá was up to the challenge and pushed the ball wide. When Tenerife did have the ball, their players didn’t appear to know what to do with it, and they failed to threaten Munir, who had his most placid match of the season! To top off a dismal match, the referee stopped play in the 73rd minute, because VAR had spotted a handball by Alonso. The ref had missed it during the previous penalty-area play, and awarded a spotkick to a bemused Malaga. Tenerife players protested, but to no avail, and Sadiku sent Ortolá the wrong way to make it 2-0 after 76 minutes. And that was that! The game just petered out, finishing with a disgruntled blanquiazul faithful making their way out, disappointed by the performance, plus the lack of tactics and passion from their team. This result leaves CDT in 19th place, and tomorrow night (Saturday) they have a home game against Alcorón, when they must surely improve. Welcome to reality, Sr Baraja!

Football

Former United star did not help fix vital match FORMER Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera was among 36 players cleared of matchfixing by a Spanish court.

A probe relating to the 20102011 season was launched after corruption was thought to have taken place in a Levante-Zaragoza match. Zaragoza won, to avoid being relegated from Spain’s top football league, La Liga. But a couple of former Zaragoza officials were found guilty of fraud. The club were alleged to have paid their opponents €965,000 to throw the match, in their bid to ensure topflight football the following season. Herrera, now with Paris St Germain, and former Atletico Madrid

captain Gabi Fernandez, both ex-Zaragoza players, were among those on trial. A Valencia court found 41 people, including the players, not guilty, the judge citing a lack of evidence. But former Zaragoza President Agapito Iglesias, and former financial director

Javier Porquera, were jailed for 15 months. They were found guilty of using club money to pay €1.73m in relegation bonuses for players. But in Spain, if sentences are under two years, they are generally suspended, and first-time offenders are usually allowed to skip jail.

The purse at the Ladies European Tour event, held at Marbella’s Aloha Golf Club, will be increased from €300,000 to €600,000. The competition, which began in 1982, will now be known as the “Race to the Costa del Sol”, in a large rebranding of the event. It will take place between 28th November and 1st December next year, and the tournament will feature Europe’s top female golfers going head-to-head. Local golfer Azahara Muñoz, 32, from San Pedro, is the top name

Nadas Int I can’t put it any better than Duncan has written on Facebook: “Scooters A 0 Pas O Nadas Int 8. What can I say? Outplayed, outgunned, but still enjoyed; took 3 legs, so no whitewash. Some good finishing, Quality 102, Santo 108. Thanks to the staff, good food, mince and tats. Good night had by all.” The theme continued in Division 2, with the Pink Elephant v Picassos @ Palms match. Chas said: “Piccaso’s 0 Pink Elephant 8. Per 180. Good catchup with old friends. We won a leg.

Yes! Only the one. I would like to say it was close. But it wasn’t. LOL. Great night out. Thanks Lynn, and your very good team.” Finally, we have Clouseau’s v Scooters & Chevys B. All I can tell you is the score, because I don’t know anything else. It was 7-1 to the visitors. The Handicap takes place tonight (Friday, 13th) and the league resumes on 10th January. But more catch-up games are planned during the break, so, as long as people let me know when they are playing, I will keep you all up to date on Facebook, as they happen.

Azarhara has her eyes on hat-trick of Spanish titles

on the poster for 2020’s Women’s Spanish Open. The two-time champ won in 2016

and 2017, but she was pipped to the 2018 title by Dutchwoman Anne van Dam, who defended her title this year. Joining them for a major showdown in Andalucia are Tiger Woods’ niece Cheyenne Woods, and Americans Beckey Brewerton and Beth Allen. Muñoz finished fourth at this year’s competition on 279, behind Nanna Koertz Madsen and Aditi Ashok, who both carded 276, while van Dam was one ahead on 275. The Costa del Sol brand will sponsor the 2020 event, described by organisers as a perfect showcase of what the Costa del Sol in particular, and Andalucia in general, can offer.

Jerry Lee wins gold!

Boxing

LOCAL boxer Jerry Lee Palmer claimed first place at the prestigious Women’s Winter Box Cup, at the Guildford Spectrum arena last weekend in Surrey, beating two world-class opponents. The event, for established women and girl boxers only, is the first of its type in the UK, and is open to Juniors, Youth and Elite fighters across a variety of weights. It aims to help develop the in-depth strength of women’s boxing, and also to inspire other women and girls who may wish to HE’S £70 million richer, a stone lighter, and far too deferential to his Saudi paymasters for comfort. But all that matters to Anthony Joshua is that he has regained his world heavyweight belts, having lost them disappointingly. Joshua, one stone lighter and looking supremely fit, turned back the clock with a boxing display full of the guile and calculation which had deserted him in New York six months earlier. True, opponent Andy Ruiz, who stunned him in New York six months earlier, had piled on the pounds and was podgier than ever. But Joshua displayed his renewed appetite to dominate the sport’s most brutal division. It would be unfair to accuse Joshua of running scared in this fight, but far from being the thunderous collision many had envisaged, he was a study in the wariness and restraint he had learned from his initial humbling by Ruiz. And, determined that he would not make the same mistakes in the encore, he showed off his newly-acquired defence, never wasting a shot, and fending off everything that Ruiz had to offer. Joshua refused to celebrate wildly, settling instead settling for a smile of quiet vindication. The margin of victory on the cards, with two judges scoring

get involved in the sport. Jerry Lee, representing West Warwicks Boxing Club, was competing in the 69kg category and progressed to the final by beating Kerry Hayley, on a 5-0, unanimous points decision. She then faced a final showdown with the favourite, Paige Goodyear, who won a World Youth Championship bronze medal in 2018. They both fought at a ferocious pace, over three tough rounds. But at the final bell, the judges awarded Jerry Lee another unanimous win, again 5-0, and the Gold medal, in only her ninth bout. It proves she really does have what it takes to progress much further… so watch this space!

Joshua regains his crown, and wins another fortune to demonstrate his ability

in his favour 118-110 and the other 119-109, hardly flattered him. But who cares? Certainly not Joshua! The Ruiz camp want to extend this rivalry into a trilogy, but Joshua, who more than doubled his net worth in 36 onesided minutes, can afford to resist, because he knows he would sort him again if they clashed. The only blemish of his professional career was an aberration that should never have happened, and, despite the steady rain falling in the heart of the Arabian desert, it was the perfect backdrop to his cool night’s work.

Jubilant Joshua said: “I’m used to knocking guys out, but, the last time, I got caught coming in. The sweet science of this sport is about hitting and not getting hit. Stay hungry, stay humble.” The Ruiz entourage had suggested their man’s dramatic weight gain had all been a careful ploy to overwhelm a slimmed-down Joshua. But it was nothing of the kind, because Joshua was lithe, while Ruiz looked a ponderous shadow of his former self, confirming fears that the win of his life had led him to overindulge. “Next time I’m going to get a bit more prepared,”

he said with a shrug. “Joshua did a hell of a job.” Joshua cut Ruiz in the first round, blood trickling from above the Mexican-American’s left eye after he connected with a crisp right hand. The plan devised by trainer Rob McCracken was reaping early reward, as he waited for the right moment to unleash his destructive power. But the problem Ruiz presents is his ability to absorb the most fearful punishment, before striking back with his own bombardment. So it almost proved as he tried to draw Joshua in, clashing heads with his opponent to give him a matching war wound. Unlike the Madison Square Garden affair, however, Joshua was undaunted by the impact. He looked lighter on his feet, staying beyond Ruiz’s reach, sensibly, and resisting any crazy swinging. At the start of each round, Ruiz bounded in, looking to administer the decisive blow. But still the Brit Joshua refused to become wrapped up in bruising exchanges.

Whatever tactic Ruiz tried, whether it be a quickfire sequence of jabs, or a few sweeping rights, Joshua always had the right answer, at one point poking his tongue out at the champion to show that he was the boss. Only briefly did this escalate into a brawl, as Ruiz unsettled his man with some crafty strikes to the back of the head. But Joshua knew by the seventh that he was ahead on points. It was increasingly evident that Ruiz would take more glory with a knockout punch. But his opponent, who spent months selecting sparring partners who would mirror his stocky adversary’s style, ensured there was no way through. With Ruiz becoming desperate, Joshua, a model of wisdom on the night, knew he needed only to see out the rounds to seal a decisive victory. Ruiz sensed it as the clock ticked down, beckoning Joshua to trade at close quarters. But Joshua merely grinned in response, aware that the strategy to shut Ruiz down had worked better than anyone had dared hope. As the judges confirmed the inevitable, manager Eddie Hearn crowed, tongue in cheek, that had been written off. It was nonsense, of course, because his champion really does belong on top of the world.
