BY the end of the year, Spain will almost certainly have attracted record numbers of festive holiday-makers, who have decided to up sticks and head out to the sunshine coasts, as temperatures are expected to soar. While the UK has been swamped through storms, the dreadful weather is persuading families to pack their suitcases and head out to the Spanish sun. Airports in the UK are reporting record numbers, as travellers depart for their Christmas and New Year holidays, now the holiday season has started for many, who break up from work. Budget airlines easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com have flights, constantly full, back and forth to Spain right now, as the UK weather conditions are so bleak, with mass flooding and freezing temperatures. New arrivals coming through Malaga airport all had a tale to tell about their departure from Britain. Yasmin King arrived with her son Daniel, saying: “The weather is truly awful back home in Taunton, and the Somerset levels are all flooded out. “I just thought “blow it”, jumped on the internet and booked a hotel and flight package for the two of us. Prices were good, so it was a no-brainer. I may even go for paella on Christmas Day, rather than turkey!” Meanwhile, Bridget Eason, with her family, came through the terminal and said: “Feel the warmth! We saw the weather forecast for Spain this Christmas week and it was a last-minute booking.

Spain should pass record figures for the festive period

My husband, Tim, doesn’t go back to work until 3rd January, so we booked for Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve in Spain, and we are really looking forward to it.” Iain Stamper, who, with his wife Sarah landed from Manchester, said: “It’s Spain for us this year. We don’t normally go away for Christmas, but the kids are grown up now, so we thought we would give it a try. “With Brexit coming up as well, we felt it best to make use of our easy European travel, just in case!”

With full flights, and airlines rarely having an empty seat flying into Spain, air hostess Sharon Roulestone said: “All flights are packed out inbound, but we are noticing far fewer travellers going home for Christmas. “We chat with our customers, and it’s the same message: The weather, and customers are taking full advantage, with Spain being a top Christmas destination this year.” She added: “Many of them are late bookings, and we’re seeing customers booking a package more than just a flight, which is the normal

signal of late getaways.” Temperatures were expected to reach 22ºC in Seville in the southern region of Andalusia, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, when the average for those days is usually 16ºC. On the Costa Blanca, Alicante regions may reach 24ºC, when the December average is 17ºC. And the Costa del Sol was predicted to hit 22ºC as temperatures rise through the Christmas period. Spain’s tourism will greatly benefit from this boost, and hotel owners are delighted as well as bar and cafe owners.

Restaurant owner Emma Coleman, who operates Scoffers on Fuengirola’s sea front, said: “We’ve been shut for the December break we normally take, but we have had so many messages from our customer base, asking when we are reopening. “So me and my husband Scott will reopen straight after Christmas Day, because of the influx of holidaymakers heading here,” she said. Whatever happens in Spain, its glorious Christmas weather seems to be a hit this year, giving a great boost to the Spanish economy.

world championships. Arriaga was successful in making contacts with organisers of international motorsport events, for the circuit’s future construction. In the announcement, he stressed that the circuit should generate sport and economic activity on the island, attracting tourism, and could easily host toplevel events for a sport which has a large fan base in the Canary Islands. He also confirmed that there was genuine interest from the organisers, to visit Tenerife and include the island in their future plans. “For this reason, mediumterm meetings are being scheduled to further these conversations, and to detail all the attractions Tenerife

has, as a venue for events related to the motoring world,” said Arriaga. He added that this experience had been fundamental to verify that progress of the project was being made in the right direction. Enrique Arriaga was accompanied by Orlando Pérez, functional head of the Roads, Mobility and Innovation department, and by technical advisor Walter Sciacca. They held talks with Chase Carey (Executive President and CEO of Formula One Group), Alejandro Agag (President of Formula E Holding), Chris Aylett (CEO of the Motorsport Industry Association) and McLaren F1 drivers’ Carlos Sainz Jr. and Lando Norris.

Fast and Furious, so deadly for the film-star drivers! THE most dangerous stunt from the Fast and Furious series, filmed on the closed road between Buenavista del Norte and Punta de Teno, in the northeast of Tenerife, really did spell danger for the actors, during filming of the race scene.

The franchise is famous for its high-octane car chases and spectacular crashes, but are all those wild stunts really as dangerous as they look? Absolutely! Stunt driver and co-ordinator Robert Nagle, who oversaw the thrilling racing scenes in James Mangold’s juggernaut Ford v Ferrari, opens up in an exclusive interview about his career, sharing his most harrowing Fast and Furious experiences. Nagle, who has been a stunt driver in every main instalment of the film series since Fast Five, didn’t mince words when asked to identify

his most dangerous stunt. “It’s all pretty precarious,” he said. “There’s so much going on, and with some of these scenes, almost everything is inherently unsafe, especially with multiple cars and explosions, plus pyrotechnics, going off around us. A whole lot that can go wrong very quickly.” When pressed, however, Nagle singled out one “especially dangerous” scene, and that was the opening of Fast and Furious 6, which he described as “pretty hairball”. Remember the sequence?

Park here at your peril, visiting drivers warned SANTA Cruz Council has warned drivers coming to the city that they will be fined if they park, illegally, in spaces allocated for the disabled. Police, who are stepping up their checks, will also be verifying disabled parking permits which, they say, are often used fraudulently. The City Council believes there should be a greater awareness about the difficulties faced by the disabled, and that more respect should be shown to them.

As well as detection and punishment, the police will be distributing leaflets published by the Society for the Promotion of Persons with Disabilities (SINPROMI). There are 664 parking spaces for the disabled, across the city.

Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) race on a twisty, Spanish road to get home before Brian’s girlfriend, Mia (Jordana Brewster), gives birth. The scene was filmed in the north of Tenerife… and on one side of the road is a sheer rock cliff, while on the other, nothing but ocean. Nagle was in the camera car filming the action, while Ben Collins, formerly known as the mysterious driver “Stig” on Top Gear, and rally car champion Mark Higgins, did the actual racing. Nagle added that the driving wasn’t the problem, but the road itself! “There was this road they wanted me to shoot, which was deemed too dangerous for the general public to drive on,” he recalled. “It’s got a 1,000ft drop into the ocean with these little blocks, probably meant to slow you down just enough so you get a really good view of where you’re about to crash!” Not only did Nagle have to navigate the road for the first time at full-speed, but he also had to do it without any practice. While Collins and Higgins had been racing for a week, it was Nagle’s first day at work. “Two absolutely top drivers, who had been driving this road for the last week… and I’ve got to chase them down with this camera car,” he said. “Yeah, it was a little scary.” Thankfully, he’s a pro: one take, and the scene was done. “But he admitted:

“expecting the unexpected is all part of the job.” Naturally, Nagle has plenty of experience behind the wheel. Before becoming a stunt driver, he worked as a racer, though he switched careers when money became too big a factor. “Going down the back straight at 180mph, and you’re trying to think about where the next cheque is coming from,” recalled Nagle. “It just takes away the sport’s passion.” As such, Nagle tends not to worry about whether or not he and his fellow drivers are up to the task because they always are! “A lot of the guys I hire have a pretty solid racing background, because I know I can put them in any car,” he said. Their skill-set is far superior to most cars out there.” The real danger, Nagle noted, comes from factors outside the stunt team’s control. Take that Fast and Furious 6 race, for example. “Afterwards, I said to the guys: ‘Some really bad potholes on that road’. And somebody said to me: ‘You know, those aren’t potholes … they are divots from rocks. They’ve been falling off the cliff on the other side of you, which is 1,000ft up’.” Film shoots are carefully planned, but when nature gets involved, things can still get harrowing, regardless. On the other hand, reallife accidents sometimes provide great inspiration for the films. Ford v Ferrari’s most spectacular car crash, which occurs as Christian Bale’s

Ken Miles completes his very first lap at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, was based on a reallife event. A few years back, Ford v Ferrari’s second-unit director, Darrin Prescott, was participating in a celebrity race when another car fell apart, right in front of him. Nagle said: “It was a righthand corner and the car went a little bit wide, and dropped the outside wheels into the grass. “That turned the car sideways and shot it back across the track, and it hit a concrete wall. Prescott was pretty certain he’d just seen somebody die. But, luckily, that wasn’t the case, because the other driver was fine." When it came time for Ford v Ferrari, Nagle and Prescott decided to recreate that crash in the movie. “Prescott was like, “Can we do something with this?” said Nagle. They could and they did, but the final scene isn’t just there for thrills, though. As Nagle noted: “It’s there to really drive the point home about how Le Mans is so dangerous.” After all, the wreckage comes during the first four minutes of Miles’ race, and, at that point, he still has 24 hours to go! Nagle has certainly performed dozens of dangerous driving stunts throughout his professional career. But the opening sequence of Fast and Furious 6, and the crash in his most recent work, Ford v Ferrari, are clear stand-outs. In this age of CGI (3D computer graphics), it’s really easy for film-makers to use digital effects in place of actual stunts. And though the end product might look cool, it doesn’t pack the same punch as drivers putting themselves in harm’s way. As a result, audiences often suspect that over-the-top stunts have been computergenerated illusions. However, these insane scenes, actually going on in real life, are stunts so unbelievable that you’d never guess they were absolutely genuine!

Surfer rescued by Winners are celebrating a helicopter crew El Gordo’s €4m jackpot

THE Canarian emergency search-and-rescue helicopter was dispatched to El Medano on Sunday, just after 6pm, to rescue a kitesurfer in trouble. A caller to the emergency service told the operator that while the surfer was out at

sea, practising the sport, he had been dragged along by the strong winds. He was obviously finding it difficult to return to the shore without assistance. But the helicopter team rescued him, rapidly, and delivered him back to safety.

Tenerife’s world-beaters

Hotel Vincci is one the best

GERMAN tour operator TUI has included five Tenerife hotels among the 100 “best in the world” and has given them the “TUI Holly 2020” award.

They are Tigaiga; Botánico & The Oriental Spa Garden; Apartamentos Ambassador; Hotel RIU Garoé, and Hotel Vincci Selección la Plantación del Sur.

THE winning number in Spain’s 2019 Christmas lottery, popularly known as El Gordo (The Fat One) was 26590. The lucky five-digit figure, corresponding to the top €4m prize, was sung out by two children from San Ildefonso school, as per tradition, at 9.19am on Sunday, just eight minutes after the draw began. The first prize-winning number in the hugely-popular draw was sold at lottery offices in the municipality of Salou, in Tarragona province, as well as Salamanca (Castile and León) and Alicante (Valencia). The number was also sold in Madrid’s famous Doña Manolita lottery shop. Every number in Spain’s Christmas lottery is divided into 10 identical segments, or décimos, costing €20 each. Because numbers are also divided into series, there are, in fact, 1,600 tickets with the same number, sold at lottery sales points across the country, making it impossible for one person to buy them all. Many people buy even smaller stakes in several décimos, to increase their chances of winning something. A €1 stake in the winning number is worth €20,000, while a €20 décimo pays out €400,000 before taxes. But those who

miss out on El Gordo can still win a prize. The second prize awards €125,000 to each winning decimo, or €6,250 for every euro paid. Third prize is €50,000 for a decimo, or €2,500 for every euro. The Christmas lottery also includes 1,794 prizes of €1,000 for every decimo, or €5 for every euro (the so-called Pedrea). Punters also have the chance to win back the cost of a décimo (the Reintegro) if the last digit of their number matches the last digit in the six-digit sequence that wins first, second or third prize. All prizes over €2,500 are subject to a 20% tax, which means that décimo holders of the top prize will each take home €320,050, the rest going to the taxman. José María Nogales had cause to celebrate selling El Gordo tickets at his lottery shop because it was first time a winning

number dad been sold there. Spain’s first national Christmas lottery took place on 18th December 1812. But historians say it was first conceived to buy bullets and make cannons to fight the French troops attacking the Andalusian city of Cádiz. In 1812, that was Spain´s last line of defence against the Napoleonic invasion. The lottery was created during the siege of Cádiz, which had already ended by the time the draw took place. Yet the siege lasted from 5th February 1810 to 25th August 1812. However, the war was still raging, and the lottery spread from Andalusia to the rest of Spain, as the Spanish troops defeated the French. In 1814, when the war was nearly over, the lottery headquarters moved from Cádiz to Madrid, and it has remained in the capital ever since.

Hairdresser’s €1m scam was a snip to customers

A WOMAN from Seville, Spain, has been jailed for her part in a callous scam, in which 56 people were defrauded of around €1m. Posing as a hairdresser to gain her victims’ trust, the woman, named by police as ABGA, tricked the clients into handing over their money, with fictitious tales of having stock-market expertise. Through their hair appointments, the coolheaded scammer boasted that she had excellent relationships with investors in Barcelona, persuading her victims to hand over their well-earned cash. Alongside her husband, the

woman even registered a false real-estate company in a bid to go unnoticed by the police. She paid large sums into its bank account under the pretence that it was money made from property sales. However, when one of her victim’s became suspicious after the woman refused to return her calls, the police were notified. And an investigation by the Guardia Civil revealed the scam, which had been carried out over several years. Once enough evidence had been collected, ABGA was brought to trial, and, last Friday, she was found guilty of fraud. In addition to one year’s imprisonment, she has been ordered to compensate her victims €912,600.

Renewables accounting for nearly 50% power in Spain RENEWABLES are estimated to account for 49.3% of Spain’s total power generation capacity, as 2019 comes to a close, according to Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE). The installed renewable energy capacity rose by 10% in 2019, with close to 5 GW (gigawatts) coming online.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity has grown the most over the year, up by 66%, compared with the 2018 installations. And by the end of 2019, Spain will have more than 7.8 GW of solar power in total. Wind farms have added more than 1.6 GW this year, raising the total installed-windpower capacity to over 25.2 GW. This figure includes the first 5 MW (megawatts) of offshore wind, which made a Spanish debut in 2019,

with the deployment and commissioning of an offshore turbine in the waters around Gran Canaria. Two coal-fired power plants totalling 347 MW were taken offline, further contributing to Spain’s decarbonisation efforts, said REE. In 2019, renewables have generated 36.8% of all electricity in the country. And, on 14th December, coalbased power was not used at all to produce electricity for a whole day in the Spanish peninsula.

Fancy that! A Christmas tree, bang in the middle of a forest

DOG-WALKER Hugh Somervel was astonished to come across a fully-decorated Christmas tree… in the middle of a Costa Blanca woodland. Hugh was out with his Australian Shepherd dogs when he spotted the mystery pine, complete with red baubles, silver stars and a Santa Claus on top. In a now-viral social-media post, Hugh shared his joy at the “amazing sight”. He was also fascinated that no one had pinched the decorations. “It’s a lovely sight when walking the hounds,” he said, adding that the tree was on the edge of the Granadella forest on Carrer del Passarell in Cost Nova, Javea. In fact, it has become a regular tradition, started more than five years ago

by Brits Liz Dickson and her friend Dawn. “Some years back, Dawn suggested we decorate a tree in the woods to bring some Christmas cheer to dog-walkers,” Liz told the Olive Press online newspaper. “Dawn walks her dogs there twice a day, and several others do, too, including me. It was a lovely idea and so nice to see. “But this year one of the Swedish ladies, who also walks her dog there, told Dawn the original tree was ugly, so a proper Christmas tree was bought and put up. “The new tree may be a little over the top, as there were already a ‘shedload of pine trees in the wood,” she confessed. “But I hope it brings a smile to walkers during the festive season.”

FOSSIL scientists (palaeontologists) studying them in Las Casiones (Teruel), have discovered the presence of the species Indarctos, a relative of the giant panda found in China today. A 2012 study concluded that the last European pandas lived in the Iberian Peninsula. They also uncovered proof of the existence of relatives of the giant panda, in what is now Spain, dating back between 11-12 million years in various fossil remains. These were excavated from sites Abocador de Can Mata, in Els Hostalets de Pierola (Barcelona) and Nombrevilla-2 in Daroca (Zaragoza). They were the oldest fossils of their kind in Europe, belonging to a species found only in Asia today. The most emblematic of them all was China’s giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), a species which would have evolved from a more basal bear, like the ones found fossilised in the Spanish sites. Now, a new study, led by fossil scientist Juan Abella, at the Catalan Institute of Paleontology (ICP), together

were 6.23 million years old. The discovery, published recently in the “Geodiversitas” magazine, suggests that the last European panda really did live in the Iberian Peninsula. “Based on cranial, mandibular and dental characteristics, these fossils can be classified in the Ailuropodinae

In particular, Ann Perkin and Teresa Sumner, and Sharon and Howard from New Hoppy’s Bar, took fundraising very seriously, for our new foster kitten, Garci. He was found with a deformed front leg, and, after consultations with our veterinary surgeon, it was decided that, when Garci was strong enough, it would be amputated. Ann and Teresa have been lifelong friends, both now in their 70s, so when one of them retired to Tenerife, the other was sure to follow. Pondering over their lives, and telling tales in Hoppy’s Bar, they ventured onto what they would have liked to have done, given the opportunity. Both are terrified of heights and water, and neither can swim, so they decided it was now or never, to conquer their fears.

sub-family, thus making them relatives of today’s giant panda,” said Abella. According to genetic methods, the ailuropodinae separated from other subfamilies of current bear species during the Late Miocene, about 20 million years ago. “These were the predominant bears in the carnivoran assemblages for most of the Late Miocene in the Iberian Peninsula,” he said, adding that at least three species of bear lived at that time in the region now known as Spain. “These fossils of Indarctos punjabiensis represent the last population of this subfamily from the Iberian fossil record, and possibly also from Europe, making this an important advance in our knowledge of the

evolutionary history of this group.” According to the paleontologist, the skeleton of Indarctos suggests it was omnivorous, but with a large vegetable component in its diet. Its young could climb trees with relative ease to escape from danger, and the more mature bears were able to fend off almost any attack because of their large size and powerful claws. The scientists believe that, six million years ago, Las Casiones (9km north of Teruel) was an area with many lakes and diverse fauna, including other large mammals like hippopotamus, rhinoceros and Proboscidea, close relatives of today’s elephants, as well as hyenas and other carnivores, which are now extinct.

Fred Olsen’s new trimarans ready for roll-out next year

AUSTAL Australia has rolled out the hull and attached the superstructure for the first of two 118-metre trimarans, under construction for Fred Olsen Express, which has operated in the Canary Islands for many years. Bajamar Express was rolled out, on to the hardstand at Austal Australia’s Henderson shipyard in Western Australia on 14th December, in preparation for a final fit-out before its launch, in February 2020. Austal chief executive officer David Singleton said: “This is one of nine trimarans we are building for commercial and defence customers throughout the world. “We have two of these amazing 118-m trimarans ferries for Fred Olsen Express underway, and we can’t wait to see Bajamar Express in the water.

“It will be an impressive sight, and, along with its sister ship Bañaderos Express, a fantastic addition to the Fred Olsen Express fleet.” Austal was awarded the contract for the two trimarans, worth over 131m dollars, in October 2017, and construction of the first vessel began in September last year. With construction on track, and fit-out scheduled over the New Year, the vessel is on schedule for delivery. The new ferries, capable of transporting more than 1,100 passengers and 276 cars, at speeds of up to 38 knots, feature Austal’s latest, optimised trimaran hull form. It will be fitted with motion control technology, which delivers a smoother ride, as well as an enhanced, onboard experience for both customers and crew.

Golden-boy Nadal wins a Guardia silver tribute

RAFAEL Nadal, Spain’s golden sportsman, and a tennis hero the world over, capped a successful 2019 with a Silver Medal from the Guardia Civil. The much-admired star, who this year won a record 12th French Open, was handed the gong for his impressive, off-court heroics. After marrying childhood sweetheart Xisca Perello in October, the 33-year-yearold also found time to help Spain’s youth. A proud Nadal was pictured accepting his honour in front of top Guardia Civil bosses at a ceremony in his native Mallorca. in Cyberspace. That’s a Guardia Civil programme, which aims to train young people about the potential dangers of cyberspace. The initiative sets out to capture the digital skills of the country’s university students, and put them to use in our rapidly-changing world. Key areas of the programme include “ethical hacking”, “digital jurists” and “communicators”, as well as “economy and business”. The first hacking event of the “Cyberleague” was won by a group of students from the University of Granada. Nadal was recognised for his “selfless support” of the project, which coincides with the Guardia Civil’s 175th anniversary. Guardia Civil chiefs said Nadal had reached over 200,000 people through his work, and had made it possible for 1,000 young people to participate in the Cyberleague.

A Guardia spokesman said that on 18th December, at around 6.15am, a car with French plates, carrying a family of Maghrebi origin, in North Africa, and resident in France, was on its way to Morocco when it stopped at a service area in Madrigalejo del Monte (Burgos), on the A-1, towards Madrid. The father got out of the vehicle for a rest, without realising his son had done likewise. The dad drove off moments later, leaving a bewildered youngster behind. A Guardia Civil patrol took charge of the child, and a French-speaking officer was able to get the full story.

Unfortunately, the boy could not remember his telephone number, or the vehicle’s number plate. Yet Guardia officers traced the lad’s parents and told them of their mishap. By this time, they were more than 200km away, near Madrid, and still had not realised their child was missing. But when they got over the shock, they drove back to Burgos to pick him. Guardia Civil say the youngster was extremely grateful for the “love and support” he received, to the extent that he has since written them an emotional letter of thanks, with a drawing.

Schools in many regions in Spain now have anti-choking masks for children, which are easy to apply. National Police officers learn first-aid from the very beginning

of their training, and take refresher courses constantly. Whenever an ambulance or the fire brigade is called out in Spain, Local Police will automatically be summoned to the scene, too. That’s because they are normally the first to be able to arrive, and can start firstaid or rescue operations while awaiting the main emergency services.

His panicked mother carried him to the station in Lorca, Murcia, because it was the nearest port of call… and every second was vital! One of the desk-duty officers, seeing the tot was not breathing, performed the Heimlich manoeuvre on him, causing him to spit out the obstruction and recover instantly. ANYONE recently retired, or approaching retirement, is entering a new and exciting phase in life. While some worry that retirement will be boring, many embrace the freedom it offers. If you have chosen to retire in the Canary Isles, you probably fall into the latter category! Tenerife certainly offers a beneficial lifestyle for retired expatriates, but long-term, financial security is crucial, to help you enjoy your retirement years. You need to take a good look at your finances, and the way you hold your assets. Your situation is totally different now, from your working days in the UK, so be prepared to make some adjustments. Savings and investments You may have built up a successful portfolio of investments, over your working

27th December 2019 - 2nd January 2020

Retiring to the Canary Isles, with financial peace of mind life, but your circumstances and objectives were different then. With a regular salary, you could afford to take more risk, and focus more on growth. If you are looking for income, now you are retired, you need to plan for that, and also to protect the capital that generates the income. You should aim to earn at least enough capital growth to keep pace with inflation, over time, to help maintain your spending power, throughout retirement. It’s a fine balance. The starting point is to obtain an objective assessment of your risk tolerance. Together, with a good understanding of your aims, circumstances, needs and time-horizon, this is key to ensuring your portfolio is suitable for you. Taxation All that free time in retirement costs money! You can help maximise your income through strategic tax planning. While tax-mitigation opportunities are limited, when paying PAYE on your salary, how you hold investments can make a difference to retirement income. Take note that UK tax planning

is unlikely to be effective in Spain. ISAs, for example, become taxable for Spanish residents. Once resident in Spain, you gain access to investment opportunities that might provide better taxefficiency, alongside other advantages. Pension plans This is the time you get to benefit from those years of pension contributions. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for expatriates, but, once you are no longer UK resident, it may become less beneficial to leave UK pensions where they are. UK pension income is paid in sterling, so if your key spending is in euros, this invites exchange-rate risk. UK pensions remain subject to UK regulations, which could

change for non-residents, after Brexit. Many expatriates transfer UK pensions to a Qualifying Regulated Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS), or reinvest funds into more-tax-efficient arrangements for Spain. To protect your long-term, financial security, research your pension options and understand the various implications. You need to take care here, so professional, regulated advice is essential. Estate planning None of us like to think about our departure from this world, but there is no denying that reaching retirement age does bring it closer to home. Decide who you want to leave your assets to, how much, and when. Then research the most-effective

way to achieve this, in the most-tax-efficient way, taking both Spanish and UK rules into account. An integrated, financialplanning approach produces better results than just focusing on one element at a time. While some try a DIY approach, cross-border tax, wealth management, pensions and estate planning are complex, and it is difficult to objectively assess your own situation. For peace of mind, talk to a specialist adviser who will take time to understand your circumstances, needs and goals, to help you secure a prosperous retirement in the Canary Isles. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Dame Edna Rules The Waves

In this heartwarming two-part Christmas series, wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan travels to Russia to help cat expert Dr Victor Lukarevsky as he tries - for the first time ever - to rescue and rehabilitate lynx from the lucrative fur and pet trades, back to the wild. Joining Lukarevsky in the wild Ural Mountains, Gordon helps rescue Koshka and Miass, two adult lynx. They’ve been held in tiny steel cages by a fur trapper for years, bred for the fur their kittens provide. Can Gordon and Dr Lukarevsky repair their psychological and physical wounds and teach them how to live in the wild again? We follow Koshka and Miass as they begin to regain their strength and, in an unexpected turn of events, they have two beautiful kittens. Having never raised her own kittens before will she be able to look after them? They are joined by two lynx from Russia’s pet trade: an overly friendly young male, Bryansk; and Dasha, a skittish young female. Both were raised in a house and have never seen the outdoors. These pets will be the ultimate test of Lukarevsky’s project to rehabilitate captive lynx.

Best Home Cook

New Year’s Day, ITV1, 21.00

New Year’s Eve, BBC1, 21.05

Best Home Cook is back. The eight-part series returns with a new lease of life; brand new kitchens, tougher challenges and an exciting and tense finale each week. There’s also a new addition to the judging line-up, with Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett joining the queen of home cooking Mary Berry, and fruit and veg expert Chris Bavin. Hosted with wit and warmth by Claudia Winkleman, ten talented home cooks embark on the ultimate immersive cooking competition, living together in a shared house and competing against each other whilst the trio of judges look on and put their cooking prowess to the test. Each week the cooks are faced with two challenges, starting with Mary’s Ultimate round, where the contestants produce their tried and tested food for special occasions. Up next, it’s Chris’s incredibly difficult Rustle Up challenge - one star ingredient and one hour to create a mid-week masterpiece. Those who haven’t impressed enough across these two challenges will be picked to take part in Angela’s dreaded Eliminator challenge, where the cooks go head to head and must follow one of Angela’s recipes - perfectly. Easier said than done when the decision of who goes home is based on that dish alone. The Eliminator is judged blind, and the judges will send home the cook responsible for making their least favourite version of the dish. They will not know which cook has cooked which dish until they’ve made their decision. This week Mary challenges the cooks to produce their Ultimate Italian pasta dinner. The cooks are straight in at the deep end, making pasta from scratch in front of Italian cooking pro Angela Hartnett. With all the cooks showcasing their talents for the first time we see a plethora of different dishes, as well as varied techniques for making pasta, with one cook hand-rolling their pappardelle. With their individual cooking styles shining through, dishes range from a classic lasagne and a traditional fettuccine bolognaise to a more adventurous squid-ink tortellini - and a rather unusual surf & turf tagliatelle. At the end of this round, the judges each pick their personal favourites and the cooks head back to the house to relax together. The following day starts with Chris’s Rustle Up challenge, where the cooks have just one hour to rustle up a dish from scratch. This week they have to think on their feet with a piece of fruit. With no notes, no recipe books and a limited selection of other ingredients the cooks have to turn the given ingredient into a dish that will impress the judges enough to keep them out of the Eliminator. We see the cooks, though at times reluctantly, going to each other for help, advice and even a shelf in their oven. After a fraught and frantic hour, the judges give their verdict on 10 very different dishes. The judges must then decide, based on the cooks’ performance in both rounds, who is safe and who needs to prove themselves by cooking again in the Eliminator.

Promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent, Elizabeth Bancroft (Sarah Parish) returns on a professional high. However, it appears success has come at a high price as she’s now estranged from her beloved son Joe (Adam Long) and facing increasing pressure from her dangerous pact with crime boss, Daanish Kamara (Ryan McKen). When a chilling double murder brings an unexpected personal reunion, Elizabeth’s true loyalties are questioned. Forced onto the side lines by the new Detective Superintendent, Jake Harper (David Avery), Elizabeth must turn to her old skills in order to get her way. Despite warnings to stay away from the murder investigation, the main suspects disappearance pulls Elizabeth further into the case. With a dangerous new enemy emerging for Bancroft, old foes sense a weakness and opportunity to take their revenge.

Liam Gallagher: As It Was BBC2, 22.15 Liam Gallagher: As It Was tells the honest and emotional story of how one of the most electrifying rock’n’roll frontmen went from the dizzying heights of his champagne supernova years in Oasis, to living on the edge, ostracised and lost in the musical wilderness of booze, notoriety and bitter legal battles. ITV1, 18.00

“For one night only, the cleverest contestants go head to head in a battle of the brains. They have got all the answers except one - who will be Quizmaster 2019?” - Jeremy Vine, presenter This new factual entertainment show hosted by Jeremy Vine pits high-profile contestants on major TV quiz programmes against each other to find out who is king or queen of TV game shows. Quizmaster, a 90-minute peak time special, sees 15 previous contestants on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Mastermind, The Chase, Fifteen to One and University Challenge compete in a high-stakes battle to become ultimate quiz champion. The 15 competitors do battle across a series of rounds, each one designed to test a different aspect of their quiz knowledge, catch out other contestants or beat the clock. Among the familiar faces competing are actor Shaun Williamson, who won Celebrity Mastermind, Isabelle Heward who won Mastermind in 2017, Egghead Pat Gibson who won £1 million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and his Eggheads teammate Kevin Ashman, a former Mastermind champion who holds the record for the highest score ever, Ailsa Watson who was Fifteen-to-One Grand Final winner in 2015, as well as Eric Monkman and Bobby Seagull, who achieved success on University Challenge. Contestants are eliminated in each round, until just two remain to go head-to-head in a climactic final. Jeremy Vine says: “How clever do you have to be to win a million on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Cleverer than a Mastermind champion? Or are the students on University Challenge the brainiest? Well, we decided to find out. And you could have cut the tension in the studio with a knife. This quiz is a Christmas monster!”

Jools’ Annual Hootenanny is now firmly part of the UK’s tradition in celebrating the New Year on television. He and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra take centre stage in providing the soundtrack to seeing out the old year and welcoming in the new. Joining Jools on this year’s Hootenanny are Stormzy, Brittany Howard, La Roux, Rick Astley, Tom Walker, YolanDa Brown, Stereophonics, Melanie, Eddi Reader, Pauline Black and Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson from The Selecter, Joseph, Ruby Turner, and the Pipes And Drums of The 1st Battalion Scots Guards. South London rapper and the star of Glastonbury 2019, Stormzy, performs Crown and more from his second album, Heavy Is The Head. Long-standing Welsh rockers Stereophonics perform songs from their recent seventh number one album, Kind, plus a classic tune. Lead singer Kelly Jones also joins Jools and the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra with his take on a song made famous by Nina Simone, joined by award-winning saxophonist YolanDa Brown. Jools welcomes back the synth-pop stylings of La Roux who returned with new music this autumn after a five year break; she brings a taste of her forthcoming album, Supervision, and performs her 2009 hit, In For The Kill. Taking stage in the centre of the floor it’s a family affair with sisters, Joseph. The trio of siblings from Portland, Oregon showcase their harmonies on a track from this years’ Good Luck, Kid and a reminder of their breakout song, White Flag. Joining Jools and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra are Alabama Shakes’ frontwoman and Grammy nominee Brittany Howard, who brings a taste of her debut solo album, Jamie, and lends her dynamic vocals to Jackie Wilson’s dancefloor filler (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher. Tom Walker, the Mancunian debut star of 2019 performs a track from his number one record, What A Time to Be Alive. 80s pop icon Rick Astley delivers a big band version of his classic, Never Gonna Give You Up, the song that made him a global superstar and saw him grace the Reading Festival stage with Foo Fighters this summer, and he also takes on a Temptations classic. First lady of Woodstock and performer at the inaugural Glastonbury, Melanie, brings 70s sunshine vibes to New Year’s Eve with sing-a-long hit, Brand New Key, AKA The Rollerskate Song. Bringing a taste of ska to the celebrations are Pauline Black and Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson from much loved Midlands outfit, The Selecter. Glasgow singer-songwriter and frontwoman of 80s folk-pop band Fairground Attraction, Eddi Reader, performs the band’s iconic 1980s smash, Perfect. And it wouldn’t be a Hootenanny without vocal powerhouse Ruby Turner who joins Jools to sing the pairs latest single, Come On In.

Madagascar: Earth’s Tropical Islands BBC2, 21.00

Orange is the New Mammy There’s bad news for Winnie when Agnes discovers Peggy Piper the Pernod poisoner is out on appeal and could be coming back to Finglas. This might mean Winnie has to give evidence against her again as she was the one who saw Peggy poison her husband. There is much discussion about whether Peggy is guilty or not but the only way there’s ever going to be closure is by meeting Peggy herself…Meanwhile, Buster loses the tank Dermot’s hired for their latest promotion and must find it before Dermot finds out.

Journey across the tropical island of Madagascar, exploring the unique and incredible wildlife it has to offer - from its renowned lemurs to tiny chameleons. Formed nearly 90 million years ago, the island is now home to some of the most extraordinary landscapes, mountains and rainforests, which are home to both human and animal. From Madagascar’s most famous furry residents the ring-tailed lemurs, who are the direct descendants of one of the very first mammals to arrive, to the tiny Labord’s chameleons which are unique to Madagascar, the island is home to many distinctive animals. The humans living on the island must find ways to survive on terrain and weather which can at times be unpredictable. Cameras follow the people of Ampotaka, who have learnt to use baobab trees to store vast quantities of water in their trunks, which act as a lifeline when droughts hit the island. Madagascar’s unique wildlife has slowly been evolving for millions of years, but since humans arrived the pace of change has been faster than many animals can cope with. As little as 20 percent of the island’s original forest remains, and 95 percent of lemurs are now threatened with extinction. We hear how the greater bamboo lemur has been saved from the brink of extinction.

Borneo: Earth’s Tropical Islands Episode two: Borneo. In the heart of South East Asia lies the tropical island of Borneo. Twice the size of the British Isles, it is the third largest island on earth and home to possibly the greatest diversity of life of any island - from flying lizards and sun bears to orangutans. Its huge variety of habitats, from bustling coral reefs and ancient jungles to towering mountains, have given rise to over 60,000 species of plants and animals, many found nowhere else on earth. Borneo’s shoreline is fringed by a tangle of mangroves, home to an extraordinary creature - the proboscis monkey. Their unique pot-bellies allow them to survive on the nutrient-poor leaves, but even so, they are forced to cross crocodile-infested rivers to reach the freshest shoots. Heading inland are the ancient forests, home to some of Borneo’s 180 species of frog. In a never-before filmed sequence a male tree-hole frog, barely larger than a thumbnail, has come up with an ingenious solution to being heard above the noise. With little to eat, many of Borneo’s terrestrial mammals are smaller than on the mainland - including the exceedingly rare Bornean sun bear. At just over a metre long, it has taken to the trees to find food. For 10,000 years, Borneo’s staggering diversity has been protected by its isolation, but with the arrival of industrial logging all that has changed. Only half of its ancient forests are left and much of its unique wildlife is under threat, including the iconic orangutan. With their forest home being destroyed, how much longer can these remarkable animals survive?

WE at Keddy’s Entertainment are always proud and pleased to be able to bring you the latest, hot-off-thepress entertainment trends. Over the last year, we have regularly featured some of our fabulous Tenerife acts. They range from established performers to amazing, brand-new talent, both international and homegrown! We have focused on bringing you their behind-the-scenes hopes and aspirations. We based our interviews on encompassing our artistes’ backgrounds, asking what has spurred them on, and why they chose and love performing here. We hope this has been of as much interest to you as it has been to us, whether you are a much-welcomed tourist, or a young-at-heart, fabulous, migrating “Swallow”, an affectionate term, adopted by our lovely, winter, seasonal guests. And, of course, including everyone who is blessed to be living here, in sunny Tenerife. Once again, we have been proud to be associated with

The Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a truly-stunning, yearly event, created and organised by the main man himself, Mr. Chris Elkington. This year, the awards featured a circus theme, a huge, colourful extravaganza of talent, in which you, the wonderful public, cast your votes, to determine the awards in the various categories. Who knows what’s in store for the Ts in 2020! We have prided ourselves on continuing to conduct our focused customerservice reviews, literally being out and about on the streets of Tenerife. We canvassed your feedback, from what you looked for in a bar, to expressing your entertainment needs and preferences. Keddy’s Entertainment values all feedback. It is a precious gift, and to ignore it, is at our tourist competitive industry’s peril! So a huge shout-out, for those who have taken the time, when approached, to stop and be interviewed. We salute and thank you! We at Keddy’s Entertainment actively listen, act and strive to deliver, on what you tell us you want! Our children’s parties have continued to be extremely popular. It is so lovely seeing the birthday celebrations. and it is a privilege to host such celebratory events. More recently, Keddy’s Entertainment have hosted “Silent adventures Tenerife”, and are pleased to report that this is going from strength

to strength. If you haven’t yet given it a try, then you really don’t know what you’re missing! The new Scandal dinner show at the 5-star, luxurious GF Hotel Victoria is on every Friday evening. Seriously, it is a truly top-class dinner show, set in amazing surroundings. The feedback has been phenomenal, and it’s a great excuse to dress up for that red-carpet entrance, and

razzle dazzle the evening away. Prepare to be wowed and scandalised in style! Keddy’s Entertainment are now supplying artistes and acts to various hotel chains across Cyprus and the Greek isles. We are producing and developing Animacion academies, both here and in in the UK, training and developing our fabulous new entertainers for the future.

Keddy’s Entertainment is pleased to have forged good links with our major, leading, tour operators, both UK-based and international. We look forward to working together on new ventures next year. We are pleased to have several other exciting projects bubbling on the 2020 entertainment horizon, including a new venture that will change the face of entertainment, here in the Canaries. So, watch this space! We would like to end on a very personal level, and it gives us great pleasure to announce that, within our happy Keddy’s Entertainment team, we have a wedding announcement to make. Paul O’Connor, who is in charge of one of our hotel entertainment programmes, and Emily Martinez, his better half, are engaged and getting married. Warmest congratulations to you both. Our director, Adam Keddy, was truly touched and honoured to be asked to be best man. So we are sure that you will, like us, want to wish them every future happiness, and may all their troubles be little ones! The Keddy’s Entertainment family group would sincerely like to wish everyone a very happy and wonderfullyhealthy, brand-new year! Whatever you are doing in life, continue doing it with humour and great zest, and enjoy. See you all in 2020! But, for now, check us out on Facebook @ keddysentertainmentpage

What should I carry in the car?

By Emma

from Motorworld

AS we are in the festive season, you will have noticed more police about on the roads. For this reason, we feel it would be a good idea to remind readers of what they should be carrying in their vehicles, in order that they can avoid fines (multas), if unfortunate enough to be stopped. We have covered this subject

in the past. If you are stopped, be polite to the officers and follow their instructions, especially if you are asked to get out of the car. In order to be legal, and for your own safety, you must carry reflective jackets. If your car is a five-seater, you should carry five. These must be accessible from the inside of the car, as they must be put on before exiting the vehicle. If you breakdown on the motorway, put on your jacket, and get your two, warning triangles from the boot. Position one in front of the car, and the other at the rear, at an approximate distance of 15 metres. Stay with your car, although it is safer to climb over the safety barrier and wait on the other side, for the breakdown truck to arrive. All passengers should leave the vehicle and wait with you in a safe place, eg the other side of barrier or

on another road, safely away from oncoming traffic. Apart from this, you should always make sure you have a legal spare tyre or run flat. Regular checks of this are important. They could save you a lot of heartache, worry and loss of time, when travelling. With regards to paperwork, this is far more complex. Firstly, you should note that all paperwork carried MUST be an ORIGINAL. You must carry: *Permiso de Ciculacion de Vehiculo. This is the car’s permission to be on the road. This document carries the make, model, engine size, fuel type, chassis number, registration number, date of first matriculacion, and the date of the last change of ownership. It also bears the owner’s name and surname, but no longer shows the address, because of data protection.

This is held on the Trafico system *Ficha Tecnica. This is, basically, the car’s log book, holding all the technical data, engine size, model, tyre sizes and the optional sizes permitted, along with the manufacturer’s details and the chassis number. On the reverse of this (the newer versions are A4 size, so details are all on one side) are details about the ITV, and when it is valid until. It is important to note that there will be a specific date on here, whereas, on the sticker displayed on the windscreen, it shows only the month that it is valid until *Your in-date, photocard, driving licence, either a Spanish one, or, if you are not resident, a European one, only where appropriate *Your current, in-date passport *Your current and up-to-date Residencia

*Your insurance documents, and the receipt for proof of payment of the premium. For this, we recommend that you have a good “sort out” of old papers, and only keep the most-current, up-to-date ones in the car, to avoid any confusion. If you do not wish to carry your original passport and Residencia, notarised copies are acceptable, legally. With regard to the Ficha Tecnica and Permiso de Circulacion, for a fee at Trafico, you can obtain what is known as copias compulsada of these documents, which are legal to carry and produce, if stopped the police. Other things you are not legally obliged to carry, but which can prove useful, are a pen and notepad, or some paper, a small torch, an accident claims form and a small medical kit. This list is by no means exhaustive, but is a guideline for you.

MANY people wonder if sweet potatoes are actually that good for you. That isn’t surprising, because their name suggests they’re sugarand-starch bombs! Sweet potatoes can be enjoyed, all year round, and, in the colder weather, they become particularly appealing, as a hearty sidedish, and as an ingredient in everything from soups and stews, to pies and desserts. These colorful gems offer some pretty-impressive health perks. They’re a good source of Vitamins C and A, and one cup of baked sweet potato provides nearly half of your daily Vitamin C requirements. The same portion also supplies 400% of your recommended daily intake of Vitamin A. Both nutrients are vital for supporting immune function, which is especially important during cold and flu season. Vitamin A is also key for maintaining healthy skin, vision, and organ function. A serving of sweet potato

27th December 2019 - 2nd January 2020

Going sweet on these potatoes! delivers a third of your need for manganese, a mineral that helps produce collagen, and promotes skin and bone health. You’ll also get between 15-30% of several energysupporting B vitamins and minerals, including potassium. Vitamins A and C also function as antioxidants that protect cells against ageing and disease. For even more antioxidants, choose purple sweet potatoes. The pigment that gives them their gorgeous hue has particularly potent antioxidant properties. Unchecked, low-grade inflammation raises the risk of nearly every chronic disease, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Natural antiinflammatory compounds in

sweet potatoes have been shown to quell inflammation, at cellular level. Some may regard sweet potatoes as being too starchy, but their high fibre content makes them a slow-burning starch, meaning they won’t spike blood sugar and insulin levels. One cup of baked sweet potato provides

about 6g of fibre, which is more than a quarter of the daily recommended minimum. One cup of sweet potato, baked in its skin, provides 950mg of potassium. That’s more than twice the amount in a medium banana. Potassium essentially sweeps excess sodium and fluid out of the body, which lowers blood pressure, and reduces strain on the heart. Potassium also helps regulate heart rhythm and muscle contractions. About 12% of the starch in sweet potatoes is resistant starch, a filling, fibre-like substance that your body doesn’t digest and absorb. Replacing just 5.4% of total carbohydrate intake with resistant starch results in a 20-30% increase in fat burning, after a meal. Resistant starch

also prompts the body to pump out more satiety-inducing hormones. Eat more sweet potatoes Bake sweet potatoes, and drizzle with a combo of ground cinnamon and maple syrup, thinned with a drop of warm water. You can also bake, mash and fold sweet potatoes into overnight oats. Whip them into a smoothie, or puree them with vegetable broth, as the base for a soup. Chunked, baked sweet potatoes make a fantastic addition to a garden salad, and crisp oven-baked wedges can satisfy a French-fry craving. Mashed, sweet potato also makes a fantastic addition to desserts and goodies, from nobake biscuits, to brownies and puddings.

Pecan nuts so good for you! Wine and Dine

27th December 2019 - 2nd January 2020

THE United States grows and supplies up to 80% of the world’s pecans. They’re delicious, nutrient-packed powerhouses, that make for an ideal snack, condiment, or ingredient in your favourite recipe

A handful goes a long way Just a single ounce of pecans (about 19 halves) provides 200 calories, 3g of fibre, 3g of protein, and 20g of mostly unsaturated fats, making them a hearty, satisfying snack, with loads of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They’re important for immunity Pecans provide phytonutrients, which are plantbased compounds that have powerful antioxidant benefits. They’re also a good source of the mineral zinc, crucial for immune-cell development and function. Diets high in zinc are linked with a lower risk of

many diseases, particularly those related to age and lifestyle. What’s more, eating ellagic acidcontaining foods, an antioxidant found in pecans, is associated with a reduced risk of some cancers. They’re full of flavonoids Pecans have more flavonoids, a type of antioxidant found mostly in vegetables and fruit, than any other tree nut. People who eat diets high in flavonoids are less likely to develop chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, some cancers, and cognitive decline. They’re crucial for heart health Pecans are chock-full of monounsaturated fatty acids, a type of fat linked to improving total cholesterol levels. There is another benefit to these tasty tree nuts: pecans are filled with beta carotene and Vitamin E, which protect cells from damage, by mitigating the effects of chronic inflammation. They’re surprisingly low in sugar Not only do they contain very little sugar, but pecans may also help improve blood-sugar levels, overall, by slowing down the rate of absorption from the bloodstream into peripheral tissues. This helps to maintain energy levels, and prevent blood-sugar spikes, which ultimately lead to major crashes later on! They can boost your brain Nuts are some of the most nutritious foods, and diets high in Vitamin E have been linked with lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, by up to 25%. That’s because Vitamin E and other antioxidants in plant-based foods help reduce oxidative stress caused by inflammation, protecting cells and tissues of vital organs, like your brain. They’re helpful for weight loss While it’s true that nuts contain lots of fat, the type found in tree nuts and fruit (eg olives) can actually promote weight loss and maintenance. That’s because nuts are a filling source of oleic acid, a beneficial fat that makes you feel full, while also boosting heart health. Eating every three to four hours, limiting added

sugars and saturated fats found in processed foods, and making more of your meals plant-based, are also key to successful, long-term weight loss. As a delicious, satisfying snack, pecans are a good one to keep on hand for a nutritious boost, that won’t leave you feeling deprived. They’ve got key minerals Pecans are excellent sources of manganese and copper, two minerals that boost overall metabolic health, may contain anti-inflammatory properties, and potentially help to reduce the risk of heart disease. The added benefit is that these nutrients have shown promise, specifically in preventing in high blood pressure.

Health

By Val Sainsbury NOW the New Year is upon us, it’s not uncommon to start thinking about health goals for the coming year, such as losing weight, eating healthier, exercising and quitting smoking. But though we may have good intentions, choosing January 1st to make promises to get on a healthier track, year-round, doesn’t always work. In fact, according to a 2017 Marist poll, about a third of people who make a New Year’s resolution, fail to stick with it. This doesn’t mean we should give up on setting health goals, but it does mean we might need to rethink our goal-setting strategies. According to some experts, rather than setting a year-long goal at the start of the year, a more-effective approach is to make “Monday resolutions”, weekly goals that can be thought of as miniresolutions, taking

27th December 2019 - 2nd January 2020

Mondays are best time to make those changes!

advantage of the natural momentum of our weekly cycles, giving us a chance to start fresh, each week. If people cheat on their diets on Tuesday or Wednesday, they know they can get back on track the following Monday. There’s no sense starting again on Thursday or Friday, or even Saturday, and Sunday is basically a free-for-all. Monday is the only day that will work. Unlike other days of the week, Mondays offer the opportunity for a health reset, when you might set intentions, celebrate progress, or simply get back on your plan. “Monday can be thought of as the New Year of the week, a time to refresh and put our past bad deeds behind us, and try to do better in the coming week,” said Joanna Cohen, director of the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Institute for Global Tobacco Control. Peggy Neu, president of The Monday Campaigns initiative, agrees, saying: “It makes achieving our health goals more sustainable. New Year only comes around once a year,

but Mondays come every seven days. You basically get 52 chances a year to stay on track.” Focusing on a new goal or health initiative each week, which will build on the previous one, is also an excellent way to ease someone into a new healthier lifestyle, said Marjorie Cohn, a registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “Monday resolutions can help create more tangible positive outcomes for people to recognise.” Reflecting on small successes can be empowering. “Setting minigoals creates a feeling of accomplishment, and, when someone feels positive, they tend to make more positive choices. It’s the snowball effect,” she said. This may be especially true when it comes to weight loss. Losing 50-

100lbs seems impossible, and the amount of work, the length of time, and the reality of it seems daunting, and can truly deter people from even trying. When weight loss is broken up into weekly goals, it helps to see progress, feel confident, reach benchmarks and feel motivated to continue. Using Monday as a cue for quitting smoking can be particularly beneficial, according to Cohen. “For most people, it takes multiple tries to actually quit for good. But there’s a lot of self-learning that happens, each time you try. “With a weekly cue, you get to try again more often and learn more quickly, and, hopefully, be more successful sooner, versus only trying to quit on New Year’s Day.” In fact, research shows that Mondays are a

natural opportunity to engage smokers, and reduce their likelihood of relapse. “It’s the January of the week, the day that smokers are looking for help,” Cohen said. In a study titled “What’s the healthiest day?”, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Cohen and her colleagues set out to determine whether there were any weekly patterns in health-promoting behaviours among individuals. The goal was to work out whether the days of the week seem to make a difference, in terms of when people are thinking about improving their health. “It made sense from a practical perspective that, at end of the week, there are parties, and you may not necessarily be at your healthiest. Maybe you are eating more food than you should. And the idea was that, when you get to the beginning of the week again, it’s behind you, and you might think of being healthier.” Cohen’s team looked at people’s Google searches, particularly terms that included the word “healthy”. “We looked at things like ‘healthy recipes’ and ‘healthy diet’, to see if there were patterns in searches by day of the week. And, indeed, at the beginning of the week, specifically Monday

and Tuesday, more people are searching for healthy things, and then it sort of drops off as you get closer to the weekend,” Cohen said. In fact, Monday and Tuesday “healthy” searches were 30% greater than the combined Wednesday-toSunday average. “You make the connection that the searches are an expression of what people are thinking about, and people are thinking about being healthier earlier in the week, rather than later in the week.” Cohen’s research revealed that for people who want to help others be healthier, it might make sense to reach them at the beginning of the week, instead of a Friday or Saturday, when they are less likely to be thinking about being healthier. Her research helped to inform the Monday Campaigns, a nonprofit initiative that has taken the foundational concept of Monday as a health reset, and applied it to health behaviours, providing individuals and organisations with tools and resources to help them achieve their health goals. For example, “Move it Monday” developed “The Monday Mile”, an activity designed to help people start their week by moving together. All you have to do is map a route, wherever you’re at, gather your group, and have fun walking!

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been: 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.5% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat. CD Tenerife

Injury-time goal wrecks CD Tenerife Christmas IN the final action of the last game of the year, a corner in the 95th minute, turned in by a Nolaskoain header, sent bitter disappointment through the Tenerife ranks.

It was impossible to imagine such a painful ending. Tenerife had fallen to Deportivo La Coruña, in Riazor, having risen from a disastrous first half. They went from euphoria, after Suso had scored a penalty, to absolute despair at Deportivo’s second goal, from a set-play in the last minute of time added on. Coach Rubén Baraja was forced to find a replacement for the injured Borja Lasso, and chose Luis Milla to play in midfield, while Naranjo acted as a striker, leaving Dani Gómez on the bench. In addition, Álex Muñoz again played on the right, with Aitor Sanz and Javi Alonso as play-makers in the middle. But the match started disastrously for Tenerife, thanks to their

Deportivo La Coruña 2 CD Tenerife 1

“favourite friend” VAR. Referee Iñaki Vicandi Garrido was told to review a section in which Aitor touched the ball with his hand, just inside the CDT area. Deportivo had crossed from the right, and the ball was cleared by Aitor at the edge of the area. But as he attempted to deflect the ball, it brushed his hand. After review, the referee assessed that it was hand-ball, and inside the area, although

Aitor had no intention of conceding a penalty. Aketxe stepped up to take the penalty, but, sometimes, justice is done and keeper Ortolá guessed the correct way Aketxe would send the ball. And, diving to his left, he pulled off a brilliant save to keep it at 0-0. Football had taken revenge on the injustice committed by VAR! This stroke of good luck settled Tenerife, who were now playing okay. But

their joy lasted only until the 21st minute. Deportivo launched a counter-attack, started by Aketxe, who put through Koné. He broke from his own half and sent a cross to striker Santos, who found himself alone, and headed the ball past a sprawling Ortolá, to put Deportivo ahead. The rest of the first half was dominated by the home team, to the amazement of their fans who couldn’t remember the last time they

went into half-time with a lead. In the opposition ranks, ridicule and disaster defined the role of the Blue-and-Whites perfectly, during the first half. The second half began with a Baraja substitution, Naranjo being replaced by Dani Gómez. And, in the 57th minute, Tenerife tested Dani Giménez in the Deportivo goal. Malbasic went to place the ball and Giménez was stretched to the maximum to avoid an equaliser. This was the visitors’ best chance so far, and woke up Tenerife, who had now seen the way through to fight for a draw. Baraja surprised everyone in the 62nd minute by introducing Elliot in place of Javi Alonso, and the youngster played really well, bringing a lot of freshness and pace down the left side. As time went on, Deportivo began to look nervous, and simply wanted to protect their lead. Tenerife had a great chance to tie the game in the 73rd minute with a header from Dani Gomez on the penalty spot, but the ball struck the crossbar. At this stage, Tenerife deserved a goal because they were now

the attacking team. But it was now all-or-nothing for Baraja, and, in the 78th minute, he made his final change, taking off Malbasic and bringing on captain Suso Santana, who was responsible for the equaliser. In the 90th minute, Tenerife won a corner, taken by Bermejo. He sent it into the danger area and it was cleared by Montero… but VAR appeared on the scene again! This time, though, it showed a clear-cut penalty. Montero tried to clear the corner with his shoulder, but the ball struck his arm. Referee Vicandi Garrido came back to the monitor and had no choice but to point to the spot. Step up captain fantastic, who sent the keeper the wrong way to level the scores at 1-1. Suso celebrated his goal by dedicating it “with love” to Rubén Baraja, who had introduced him at the last moment! But the euphoria turned to disaster. In the dying seconds of the 95th minute, a Deportivo corner from the right was met by the head of Nolaskoain, who deflected the ball into the far corner, past Ortolá, to the bewilderment of everyone involved with the Tenerife team, as well as the fans. It was completely against the run of play, bringing the final whistle to end a game Tenerife didn’t deserve to lose. There were many positives to be drawn from this performance, especially the second half, which was their best display so far under Baraja. The new coaching staff now have time to spend with the squad before their next match, against Albacete on 4th January, and then Huesca on the 15th. They will need to use it wisely, if they are to see an improvement in their battle for safety in 2020.
