THE lack of public housing, the impact of holiday rentals, and the bureaucracy involved to grant licences to private investors, are the most influential factors affecting the increase in rental prices, here in the South. That’s the warning from builders, hoteliers, unions and town councils, who add that they are threatening to “strangle” economic activity in the region. Finding a long-term, residential property in areas near the coast is now an impossible mission. The market shortage is forcing workers to look for a property at a reasonable cost, in areas well above the motorway and, therefore, increasingly further away from their workplace. The Provincial Federation of Construction Entities (Fepeco), the union responsible for constructionindustry workers, has described the situation in the South as a “social emergency” through lack of housing. And it blames the lack of a “clear, operational and sufficient” policy of the Canary Islands Government in recent years, as well as the bureaucratic difficulties, especially of the municipalities, when granting licences. Fepeco President Óscar Izquierdo said the problem was of such magnitude that he predicted, short term, a “strangulation” of economic activity, if a solution is not sought now. He warned: “The situation is scandalous, worrying and very damaging to the economy and employment, and is testing the survival of many promoters and construction companies in the South.” Izquierdo added that for 10 years, no new housing had been built because an adequate policy had not been developed by public administrations. “They have done absolutely nothing,” he said. “They have looked the other way, and the years have gone by without any public promotion initiative. “There is no way for municipal technical offices to work diligently. Licences are eternalised in administrative labyrinths without solving the private promotion, which is stuck.” Ashotel holds the holidayhome market responsible for the “shaking” of the real-estate market here in the South, where almost half of the properties of the entire Canary Islands are

dedicated to this activity. María Victoria López, Ashotel Vice-President, and also Fedola Group President, warns that this is slowing job creation in the south, where the tourism industry is concentrated, and more jobs are generated. “I am convinced that the hotels have a serious problem to find qualified personnel for middle managers,” she said. “There are many difficulties to fill all the positions, because, in many cases, the qualified people are in the metropolitan area, or in the northern region. And we all know that travelling daily to work in the South is unfeasible and very costly.” She also stressed: “Many people who want to take a job there, lose the opportunity because they cannot find affordable housing.” In addition, the Ashotel leader insisted that the daily traffic-jams, featuring thousands of drivers on motorways and access to tourist centres, have an impact on the quality of life of citizens. “Losing hours on the road, daily, removes energy and reduces the chances of professional growth,” she noted, underlining another factor, pertaining to sustainability policies and environmental sensitivity,
now gaining more and more strength among the main tourist destinations. “If the workers do not have a residence in the South, there are more displacements from the North and the metropolitan area, so there will be more traffic and more pollution.” The Tenerife businesswoman added: “Every day, there are 160,000 trips between San Miguel and Adeje, without a public transport service to offer a true alternative.” Sindicalistas de Base, the majority organisation in the hospitality sector, denounces the “eviction” that workers in tourist areas are suffering, because of the effects caused by holiday rentals on the price of homes. The group’s SecretaryGeneral, Manuel Fitas, said it was a serious problem, suffered by employees, when it comes to them finding a flat or an apartment in the region, as well as the consequences it generates in the form of long trips from their homes to their workplace. “The workers have literally been evicted from tourist areas, which is where the work is, and it is impossible to access a rental apartment between the highway and the coast,” emphasised Fitas. “The reality is that it is
extending from the TF-1 towards rural areas. Rental prices have also skyrocketed in the middle of the South of the Tenerife, and the cost is prohibitive in areas such as Adeje town, Buzanada, Cabo Blanco, El Fraile, Valle San Lorenzo, San Miguel de Abona and San Isidro.” Meanwhile, the main tourist municipalities of the South, Adeje and Arona, demand that the Canarian Government builds more public housing, because of the great demand in the region, and the exorbitant rental prices. Previous governments of the Canary Islands are criticised for the deficit of public housing in the two municipalities, and Sindicalistas de Base members trust that the current, regional Executive will face the problem with a firm commitment in this matter, since, says Fitas, he does not expect any more delays. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga told a Press conference: “There is a historical delay generated by the previous regional governments, which did not meet the demand of the municipalities. “But it now seems that this shortfall will begin to be corrected, and a planning project to build houses in
the coming years is being sought.” The Mayor added: “In Adeje, we have land to build affordable housing and we have already made it available to the Government, to have an action plan as soon as possible.” Along the same lines, Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, whose municipality, with 100,000 inhabitants, has the South’s largest population, said the construction of public housing had been the “great absentee” in the Archipelago in recent years. He added: “It is absolutely necessary that the Government of the Canary Islands build public houses.” But Mena also stressed that in the new General Planning Plan, currently under review, housing construction would be one of the priorities. The two Mayors also point to holiday rentals, asking for a “logical and coherent” regulation of them. Meanwhile, the Canary Island Vacation Rental Association (Ascav) rejects the accusations that attribute to this being the main cause of the rental rises. “Blaming ourselves for being the axis of all evils is malicious and manipulative,” said an Association spokesperson. “If we compare the growth of tourist beds with the increase in population, this argument is easily disassembled.” The spokesperson added: “To say the holiday home is to blame for the lack of housing, or the cost of it, is like saying that you have to close hotels because your staff needs so much housing that it greatly increases its price.” Ascav agrees it is “serious”, ensuring that the growth of housing establishments has not gone hand-in-hand with planning and provisioning of housing for workers. “No government has ever faced this reality, and, thus, we have reached the collapse in housing, roads and infrastructure,” the spokesperson emphasised.

AS part of its 25th anniversary celebration, Loro Parque Foundation has added to its list of species, the Grey-Breasted Parakeet, which prevents the disappearance of 10 parrot species, with its protection and conservation projects. The Grey-Breasted Parakeet, originally from the Baturité Mountains, was an endangered species because of the illegal captures, designated for the pet trade, and the lack of suitable nesting sites. However, the alliance between the Loro Parque Foundation and the AQUASIS organisation has strengthened the work of renowned biologist Fabio Nunes and his team, in an area where they have enumerated over 1,000 chicks born in artificial nests. This incredible result concerns the placement of these artificial nests and their monitoring since 2010, despite the difficulties encountered during the
Loro Parque rescues its 10th endangered parrot from oblivion
process, such as protection against predators. One way of observing and understanding the habits of this species, little known in the past, has been an active presence in the field. This has also enabled specialists
to obtain a large volume of important scientific information, for other projects of similar characteristics. In addition, the tagging work has been fundamental, because it enables the gathering of data on the
movement and distribution, through the banding of parakeets, which are able to hide really well among the vegetation. Also pertinent in this process has been the creation of protected areas, which are recognised by
the local population. From now on, a new stage for the species begins, in which an exsitu programme will work for its reintroduction back into some of its historical locations, from which it has disappeared. That is why it is relevant that in the Loro Parque Foundation alone, more than 60 specimens have been born in recent years. In total, since the Foundation began to collaborate with this project, it has allocated about $400,000 to the protection of the GreyBreasted Parakeet. Thus, the number of birds swelled from around 100 to 1,000 in 2019, changing the category of the species on the Red List of Threatened Species of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), from “critically endangered” to “endangered”. The Foundation has now dedicated more than $21m to supporting conservation projects, and the reclassification of many of these 10 species is a global conservation success. So much so that it makes this non-profit organisation the most effective in preservation of tropical ecosystems, achieved through the labour of protecting the parrots.
Tax increases sure to cost most consumers TOBACCO, telephone bills and other items considered as luxuries, such as perfumes and watches, are now more expensive. On Wednesday (1st Jan), the Canarian Government increased its taxes on such
items, the IGIC rising by 1.5%, from 13.5% to 15%. Other items such as computers, toys, sunglasses as well as restaurant bills, went from 6.5% to 7%. José Manuel Rodríguez, an economist from Totalia Asesores, has concerns, saying the increase will affect all, from the most vulnerable to the wealthiest. House prices are still on the
increase, growing moderately, and will cost an extra 4%, which, in turn, will increase rental fees by up to 6%. To compensate, there will be an improvement on pensions, which will be beneficial to some 33,000 Canarians. There will also be a 2% rise in salary for the public worker, from which some 120.000 workers across the islands
should benefit. However, these rises will depend on whether Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez achieves a stable government. In addition to the rises, natural gas prices will decrease by some 4%, along with electricity rates. And customers will be able to modify their rates by consuming at cheaper, specific time periods.

Wind-power generation has tripled in two years
5 CW
THE new wind farms, installed in the Canary Islands during 2017 and 2018, have enabled the windenergy generation to triple its numbers, with respect to the latter year.
And the 2018 demand has risen from 4.4% to 13% in 2019. This is indicated by the data provided by the Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE), which points out that in the whole of Spain, the installed wind-power has reached the record of 25,223.5 megawatts (MW) at the end of last November, after adding 1,634 MW throughout 2019. The new wind turbines installed in this exercise corresponds to some of the wind farms awarded in the 2016 and 2017 auctions, and also to “merchant” windfarm parks. In addition, AEE estimates that the 2019 closing figures will have led to another new installation record, since December 2019 was expected to be extremely active.

A spectacular day out in the Tenerife capital
On 7th November, with regard to the wind-turbines generation, 7,396 gigawatt hours (GWh) were reached, setting the record for the historical series since 2005 for the month, and the second in all, after March 2018 (7,726 GWh). To date, a total of 53,730 GWh generated with wind power have been accumulated in 2019, which is 9.5% more than last year, so it was expected to end the year above 54 terawatt hours (TWh), which
would be the second-best historical brand, behind 2013. In addition, wind power covered 48.4% of the daily energy demand on 13th December, with a new, daily generation record of 392 GWh, and 33% throughout the month of November. At the peninsular level, wind ended the year with 21.5% of demand coverage, which places it as the secondgeneration technology, only behind nuclear power, and 20.8% nationwide.
Thomas Cook bankruptcy leaves a €200m credit line! SPAIN’S Government has given the green light to a €200m credit line for companies affected by the bankruptcy of failed tour company Thomas Cook.
The Council of Ministers has authorised an agreement for the Official Credit Institute (ICO), to formalise financing and guarantee contracts. It is intended to mitigate against cash-flow problems, caused by the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook. And this line of credit is also intended to avoid knock-on effects on suppliers. But in Andalucia, the company’s bankruptcy has not had much impact, and hoteliers on the Costa del Sol will borrow more than €2m from the credit line. Between January to July, just 1% of British tourists to the Costa del Sol and Andalucia used the services of Thomas Cook. Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto said: “This agreement completes the package of measures the Government approved, as a matter of urgency, to meet the needs of the Spanish tourism sector as a whole, after the bankruptcy of Thomas Cook.
“The bankruptcy impacted mainly in the Balearic and Canary Islands. With both regional governments, we have signed agreements to develop actions that allow the recovery of connectivity, and the improvement and diversification of tourism, in both ar-
chipelagos.” This package of measures is aimed at mitigating the negative consequences on the Spanish tourism sector, and maintaining activity and employment. Article four of the package instructs the Government to approve a line of financing of up to €200m, to meet the financial needs of those affected. Maroto said the Cook bankruptcy led to the cancellation of more than 475,000 plane seats during the winter tourist season, in the autonomous communities of the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Andalucia, Valencia and Catalonia, which are the most affected. During 2018, the Thomas Cook group transported 1.3 million passengers to Spain. Its main destinations were the Canary Islands, with more than 800,000 passengers, representing 62% of its share in Spain.
SANTA Cruz experienced one of its most spectacular days of the year last Saturday, thanks to various activities.
Its first Christmas Race, “Run Santa”, attracted men and women, totalling more than 700, all dressed in the traditional, Santa Claus outfits. The winners, who completed the 4km run in the fastest time, were Juanfra Martínez (14min 31sec) and for the
ladies, Eva María Ortega stopped the clock at 17min 34sec. Six cruise ships, featuring Amera, Aurora, Artania, Balmoral, Queen Victoria and AIDAstella, shared a stopover between 8am-6pm in the Puerto Chicharrero, and 12,000 visitors, tourists and crew members joined thousands of residents to enjoy the celebration of the first edition of the Navilunio, a cultural festival which included concerts, dance exhibitions, parades and several activities throughout the capital.

Safer, new-style debit card
AS an experiment, Deutsche Bank and MasterCard are launching what they believe is the first bank card in Spain to use “motion code” technology. The Calma Deutsche Bank Card will allow the security code, shown by the CVC label on the reverse, to change automatically every four hours, to increase security because it doesn’t allow thieves to clone or benefit by data theft on online transactions This card also offers insurance cover for theft or robbery, to cover the value of any stolen purchases.
Crash injures both drivers
A 43-YEAR-OLD woman, injured in a head-on collision between a car and a truck on the TF-1 motorway in Guia de Isora on Monday afternoon, suffered severe injuries and was transferred by helicopter to Candelaria Hospital. The other person involved, a 27-year-old man who, initially, was thought to have minor injuries, was then transferred in a basic life-support ambulance to Costa Adeje’s Quirón Hospital.
No time to duck out!
A DUCK flew on to the overhead cables in La Laguna on Tuesday, causing alarm among people in the area. The duck, in the centre of the street, almost 10 metres above the ground, attracted three Local Police patrols, along with troops from the Fire Department, who arrived to recover the bewildered bird. Once the fire engine approached, it raised its mechanical arm and a crew member picked up the duck, which generating laughter all around. Happily, it was able to take flight again and settled, hopefully, in a less-dangerous place.

THE Canarian Government has announced the building of a new, secondary school in Arona, to be named IES Parque La Reina.
It will certainly help contain the problem of having too many students in the area, and not enough seats for them! Canarian President Ángel Víctor Torres has begun a round of visits to the island’s municipality mayors, with Arona Mayor José Julián Mena top of his list. It was the first official visit by a President to Arona in 20 years, and, together, they announced the new school, to be built on land owned by Arona Council, which will help relieve the Cabo Blanco secondary school. It will also enable the Canarian Government to stay on target to set a date, for students of the IES Guaza to move to the Parque La Reina school without excessive delays. That will put an end to the temporary classrooms, built in Guaza on a provisional basis, more than 15 years ago. The work at IES Parque La Reina is now out to tender, after problems with the existing company, and the Canarian President gave an assurance that the first priority for the Executive was to reach an agreement with the winning company, to speed up the works and save unnecessary delays. They also made public, a request by Arona Council to the Canarian Government, to expand by 80% the current surface of the Special Natural Reserve of Malpaís de Rasca.
Torres, accompanied by Mayor Mena, met members of the educational community in Cabo Blanco and Guaza. They highlighted that the municipality’s new IES had been raised in the previous mandate by the Arona Mayor, because of the saturation situation at Cabo Blanco, which is down to the significant, population increase. Mena confirmed at the meeting that Arona Council had already located three plots to offer to the Government, to enable the start of construction in 2020. He also said that the project, already budgeted for, was within the nine-million-euro investment planned, to be allocated to Arona. As for the Parque La Reina institute, it is a historical claim in the previous mandate on land, ceded by the Arona Council, to provide the area with a secondary school to put an end to the 15 years of Guaza’s interim modules. On the extension of the Special Natural Reserve of Malpaís de Rasca, the Council’s intention is to preserve an area of great environmental and archaeological value, by expanding the current, protected area, by 80%, from 312.78 hectares to 564.10. The Canarian President
stressed: “The Parque La Reina secondary school is a work already budgeted for and awarded, which we hope will be completed in 2020.” He also spoke of the need for a new institute there, adding: “It will allow decongesting the IES of Cabo Blanco, and responds to the demographic growth of a region, which has experienced a very important population increase.” The Arona Mayor thanked Ángel Víctor Torres, saying: “The spirit and willingness to talk, and the search for solutions he has shown, is a first for the President of the Canary Islands Government. “He is the first President to come to Arona for several years, to know the projects, the advances, and also the problems of the municipality.” Mena added: “Education, as well as health, are the two fundamental rights that have, traditionally, been pending subjects for Arona and for the Southern Region. “In the previous mandate, we pledged to seek solutions that will facilitate our neighbours’ access to these rights, and the new institute will greatly support the fact that we have a quality, public-education system, with adequate infrastructure.”

Family trio’s death ‘beggars Picasso painting belief’ says top pool engineer
trashed
TONY REDDIN, one of Spain’s leading swimming-pool engineers, believes the deaths of an AmericanBritish family was an accident waiting to happen.
His verdict was revealed after nine-year-old British girl Comfort Diya, her American brother, Praise-Emmanuel Diya, 16, and 52-year-old father Gabriel, drowned on Christmas Eve. It is suspected that the pool’s pumping system, at Fuengirola’s Club La Costa Resort played a part in the deaths, although official sources have yet to confirm this. As the investigation into the deaths continues, 60-yearold Tony, a member of the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers, has spoken of the danger of swimming pools. “Swimming pools are dangerous machines,” said the British expat. “A normal swimming pool will have a 1-1½ horsepower pump. But these bigger pools at hotels and urbanisations, like the one at Club La Costa, tend to have bigger pumps… up to three, four and five horsepower.” He added: “I get a feeling of déjà vu about this; it was an accident waiting to happen.
“At theme parks, rides have a big red button to stop them in an emergency, and that’s what swimming pools should have on the poolside. “They’re serious bits of kit, especially if your hair goes down the pool drain, and it’s absolutely disgraceful that there are lots of swimming pools on urbanisations just like this. “The buck stops with the authorities in Spain, and its Government should introduce new laws. “People shouldn’t be allowed in unless their hair is tied back. The Spanish authorities don’t want this to affect tourism, and I feel as though we’re not getting all the information.” The tragedy comes just months after a British girl almost lost her life after being sucked into the pump of a
swimming pool on the Costa del Sol. In August, six-year-old Zara Clarkson, from Manchester, was hospitalised after one of her arms was trapped for three hours in a pool pump at the Villas de Santa Maria urbanisation. Tony said: “It’s like what happened to little Zara. It beggars belief how three people died, unless there was a problem with the pumps. If Zara had been in the deepest part of the pool like these three people, she would have been dead. “That’s where the main drain is, at the deepest part of the pool, and I think that’s what the problem was at Club La Costa.” Tony is also a member of the Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association (SPATA).
Fire-fighters’ foaming fun gives toddlers a real treat
PATIENTS, professionals and those visiting the Hospital del Sur (formerly El Mojon) received a surprise visit from members of Tenerife’s Consortium of Fire-fighters. It was the first time the emergency body had visited the centre, to wish a happy holiday and a speedy recovery to patients, as well as handing out gifts to the little ones.
One of the great attractions of the visit for youngsters was not only to meet this elite body, but also to feel like firemen for a day, trying on their characteristic helmets, as well as enjoying a sea of foam in the hospital grounds. And this was not the only recreational and social activity occurring at Hospital del Sur, to say goodbye to 2019. Staff and onlookers have also welcomed the performance of different musical rondallas, to liven up the centre’s Christmas parties.
CAPTION: Picasso’s 1944 Bust of a Woman, ripped in gallery
A MAN from North London, charged with criminal damage, has been charged with trashing a €23.5 million Picasso painting. Shakeel Massey, a 20-yearold, remains in custody for the attack on the Spanish artist’s Bust of a Woman (1944). The piece of art is housed at London’s Tate Modern, and staff have removed it from public display. It was reported to have been ripped, although the venue has not revealed any details
about its condition. Malaga-born Pablo Picasso created the piece, which portrays his lover Dora Maar in Nazi-occupied Paris. “The work of art is with our conservation team for expert assessment,” said a gallery spokesperson. “But Tate Modern remains open.” A Met Police statement read: “Detectives investigating an incident of criminal damage at the Tate Modern, Bankside, on Saturday, 28th December, have charged a man.” Massey, who was denied bail, will attend a pre-trial hearing at Inner London Crown Court on 30th January.

Spain’s faltering population puts village in decline A NEW study has revealed that the Andalucian region of Cordoba is suffering significantly from the plight of rural depopulation, which is plaguing inland areas of Spain.
Its 782,979-strong population has dwindled by 2,261 people, who have left the province, mirroring a nationwide trend which has captured worldwide attention. Rural depopulation has captured Spain’s minds and hearts in the past couple of years, and it became a key issue of the two general elections which took place in 2019. In reality, however, rural depopulation has been an issue in Spain for the past decade, if not longer. Villages have seen their population numbers dwindle, ever since the days of General Franco and the rural exodus, in the 1960s and 1970s. But the numbers have seen a large decline in the past decade since the economic crisis, as well as more cultural factors, as well as a change in the modern world’s necessities. The figures released by Spain’s Ministry for Territorial Policy are startling, because 90% of the country’s population is squeezed into just 1,500 towns and cities, occupying 30% of the land. The remaining 10% sits in 70% of the land, giving a population density per square-kilometre of just 14. In some areas, the population density is even less than that of Siberia.
By province, the situation of population decline is mainly focused on inland Spain and the northern regions of the country, with Madrid’s rural areas seeing the largest reduction, with a 4.6% decrease per year, for the past eight years. Although the more rural areas of Andalucia have seen a similar fate, as a whole, the southern half of Spain, particularly the coasts, have seen a steady increase. There are numerous reasons behind this, the primary one being the same reason typical for the nationwide trend: rural villages do not have the infrastructure and facilities to support modern livelihoods, so people are moving to more populated areas, for both work and social reasons. As younger generations depart, so the birth rate declines and the villages, literally, are dying out. In contrast, on average, Andalucia has seen its population increase by around 4.5%. Although this can be attributed to both the tourism industry and the influx of foreign residents, it is also, to a large degree, because of the disproportionate investments from previous governments,
which have focused on the economically-successful regions, rather than the “bread and butter” industries, such as agriculture and farming. Both Pedro Sanchez and his PSOE party, along with the previous conservative PP, used their platforms to try to highlight the issue. Their promises of improving the infrastructure of smaller villages were met with bureaucratic and legal hurdles, which practically guaranteed that this would not be a quick process. Facilities such as access, public transport, high-speed internet, banking, schools and health services are all on the agenda to modernise rural Spain. For example, the Malaga Government has recently proposed the “Plan Via-ble”, which aims to invest millions of euros into improving road access to villages with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants. Time will tell whether the political parties’ promises will come to fruition, and, even more so, actually work! But with the help of worldwide media coverage and local government support, all the signs point in the right direction of bringing both residents and tourists back to rural Spain.

Drug bust also included 10 dangerous criminals TEN criminals, said to be “dangerous” by lawenforcement officers, were busted during an international drug-smuggling operation involving the National Police, Europol, the DEA and Colombian Police. The group had been in operation for several years, according to Europol, and they were based at a hotel, along with a car workshop, in which 10 luxury vehicles were also seized. More than three hundredweight of Colombian cocaine, in total, was discovered in 25 huge black bags, meant for distribution throughout Spain. On average, each bag of cocaine weighed over eight stone, and a €550,000 cash haul was also found.
Investigations had been ongoing for 18 months after agents detected the gang, along with Colombian authorities. The gang of Spanish nationals all had previous records for murder, violent robbery, fraud and money laundering, some having in excess of 50 convictions. Five were arrested at the Spanish North Sea port of Pontevedra as they were boarding a ship used to smuggle the drugs, while the remainder were detained in Madrid. It is believed that most meetings between the traffickers were held in the capital, before they moved to locations in Galicia and Alicante.
Cancer kids’ festive lift THE Freemasons Lodge, which meets at Santiago del Teide monthly, has donated €1,000 to the Helping Hands charity, to ensure that Tenerife’s children with cancer have a little joy

Identical twins caught in a driving-test switch
IDENTICAL twins were arrested after one took the place of his brother for a driving test in Spain. An investigation began when officials in charge of the exams became suspicious about the true identity of a student, who had taken the theoretical knowledge tests to obtain his Class B driving licence. They called the Guardia Civil, and officers went to the classroom and asked the student to identify himself. He had provided a national identity card, with which he claimed to be a 19-year-old resident of Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.
But the Guardia officers, taking no chances, took his fingerprints and, after being analysed by the Crime Laboratory, discovered that he was not the holder of the ID card, but his twin brother, a resident of Arrecife, Lanzarote, who had travelled to Gran Canaria to take the exam for his brother. As twins, their fingerprints are similar, but there are key differences, which enabled the Crime Laboratory to tell them apart. Both twins have been released, with charges, and ordered to appear before a Las Palmas court.

Mum’s shock holiday death, in Costa Adeje A POLICE probe is underway after a mother died, suddenly, while on a family holiday in Tenerife, following an assault in her home town, six weeks earlier.
Megan Brannan, 24, had been enjoying a sun-soaked break in Costa Adeje with her sister, Toni, one-yearold daughter, Kaedy, and her mum and dad, Thomas, 61, and Margaret, 57, when she was found dead in her bed, on 14th October, after complaining of feeling unwell two days earlier. However, investigations are now being carried out by Police Scotland to examine whether an injury sustained by the mother-of-one, during the attack in her Motherwell hometown on 5th September, could have contributed to her death. Investigations are now being carried out by Police Scotland, and the cause of Ms Brannan’s death is being described as “unexplained”. The hairdresser, who used to work in The Highlander Bar
An angry Pope slaps woman’s hand away in Tenerife, was found in her bed by her father. A source told The Sun: “Megan was assaulted a few weeks before she went on holiday. It is possible her death is linked to the injury, and it’s vital police get to the bottom of what happened. “Her family believed it was a tragic death, or the result of an illness, so this has come as a complete shock to them. They need answers.” Following her death, Ms Brannan’s sister wrote this message in Facebook: “Very unexpected heartbreak for our family on our holiday, as heaven gained a very special angel yesterday morning. My sister, my role model, my best friend, the light of my life.
“We had a bond like no other, and no one could ever understand how close we were, and I promise I will do exactly that to your precious baby Kaedy. “You have left us all gifted with this beautiful baby, and we will always remember you through her. We will make sure she remembers how special you were, and how much you loved her.” A Police Scotland spokesman told MailOnline: “Police Scotland is investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman from Motherwell, who passed away in Spain on 14th October, 2019. “The death is being treated as unexplained, and inquiries are ongoing.”
POPE Francis appeared furious with a woman during an awkward encounter with her on New Year’s Eve in the Vatican City’s St Peter’s Square. The woman, part of the adoring crowd greeting him, pulled him towards her as he shook hands with pilgrims. But the Pope was pictured slapping the woman’s hand after she grabbed him. The 83-year-old Catholic leader, reacting angrily to the worshipper, tried to pull his hand away without success, so then hit her hand, prompting her to let him go. It was not clear what she was saying as she tugged him towards her, but the woman had made the sign of the cross as the Pope approached her, as he walked to the set of a large Nativity scene in the square. Crowds chanted “Pope!
Pope!” and “Happy New Year” as he passed by, and he later led the Vespers and Te Deum New Year’s Eve prayer in Saint Peter’s Basilica. The pontiff also urged people to “build bridges, not walls”, during the ceremony. Days earlier, on Christmas Eve, the Pope encouraged the world “to allow the light of Christmas to brighten the darkness in human hearts”. He also voiced solidarity with the victims of conflicts in Venezuela, Syria, Ukraine and African countries. The Pope hit the headlines last March when he was filmed recoiling, as worshippers tried to kiss the ring he wears. A Vatican spokesman said then that the pontiff pulled his hand away from his followers because he was worried about hygiene. Apparently, he did not want to spread germs!

Russian Ambassador meets the Mayoress of Santa Cruz
SANTA Cruz Mayoress Patricia Hernández last week received an official visit from Yuri Korchagin, the Russian Ambassador to Spain. He had travelled from Madrid to meet the Russian training ship Kruzenshtern, which had docked in Santa Cruz port. The Ambassador went to the Palacio Municipal, accompanied by Erik Nurgaleev, his 3rd Secretary and Chief of Protocol, to invite her to a reception on board the ship, before it sailed to Brazil last Sunday. Korchagin told the Mayoress that from the sailboat, one of the largest in the world,
more than 100 students had disembarked and were enjoying the city. He also stressed that the Canary Islands were favourite tourist destinations for his countrymen. In fact, data from the Russian Embassy suggests that around 2,000 people of that nationality live in the Canaries. As they strolled through the García Sanabria Park, he highlighted the strategic location and connectivity of the islands. He also admitted that he would like more time to enjoy its attractions, but his Tenerife visits were always for professional reasons. At the end of the meeting, both leaders exchanged traditional gifts representing their countries.

period, in 4 days
FOLLOWING the death of eight inmates in just four days over the Christmas period in Spain’s prisons, the Government has called for surveillance to be stepped up across the country’s jails. In response to the unusually high number of deaths at this time of year, specialist members of the Correctional Department will now lay on extra measures to support those who have suicidal tendencies, a high risk of self-harm or drug addictions, in a bid to avoid any more prison deaths. The urgency for additional measures can be made by just looking at the region of Catalonia, where, in 2019, some 132 inmates died inside their cells, with a further 50 people succumbing to their injuries later in hospital. Of the total number, 77 people died from natural causes, 53 from overdoses and 41 from suicides. This was a sharp increase from last year, with the Government now welcoming a campaign to prevent those who are susceptible to depression. The admission of drugs inside the prison will also be focused strongly, since statistics indicate that one in five prisoners loses his life through an overdose. The new measures anticipated include full bodysearches, most particularly after inmates receive a visit from their family or friends. In addition, the Government wants to manage, carefully, the dissemination of prescription drugs, of which, under the strict control of medical personnel, the smallest doses will be given. A spokesman for the Correctional Institution said the festive season was a particularly difficult time for inmates, particularly those who have just started their sentence, or are especially vulnerable.

Pound tumbles from three-year high
at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. The pound has traded in a wide range, over the last month, as the currency was rocked by a general election, and no-deal Brexit jitters. This saw the GBP/EUR climb as high as 1.20, before retreating to 1.17, while EUR/ GBP accelerated to 0.85. Meanwhile, GBP/USD traded between 1.34 and 1.29, whilst EUR/USD climbed from 1.10 to 1.11. What’s been happening? The pound roared higher
through the first half of December, culminating in the currency soaring to a threeyear high, after Boris Johnson secured a massive majority in the general election. However, sterling was quick to fall from grace, relinquishing all of its election-night gains within a week, as no-deal Brexit fears were re-ignited, by Johnson’s move to legally
block any extension to the Brexit transition period. The US dollar traded fairly robustly through most of December, but closed out 2019 on a sour note, after demand for the safe-haven currency took a hit from USChina trade optimism. After a rocky start to the month, the euro found itself performing more positively
Tax benefits on gifts, which are shared by members of families
ONE of the most common ways to transfer a property in Spain is to make a gift or endowment, which costs nothing in certain taxes to an individual, a legal entity or a company. This procedure can be most attractive if you want to put a property in the name of a family member, or another person, but do not intend to sell it. Although the process is not subject to Transfer Tax or VAT, be aware that it is subject to Gift Tax, which must be paid by the person receiving the assets. And if the gift is a real-estate property, there is also an obligation for the donor to pay Plusvalia Municipal Taxes, and, if applicable, Capital Gains Tax. The Autonomous Communities in Spain have the legislative power to regulate the tax benefits, as they consider appropriate. This power has been used by the governments of several autonomous communities to establish tax benefits, mainly seeking tax relief for families by granting tax reductions to transfers made between
family members. In the Valencian Community, the Law 13/1997 of 23rd December of the Generalitat Valenciana, establishes in its Article 10.bis, a range of tax reductions for family members. In the case of gifts from parents to children under-21, not previously holding assets valued at more than €600,000, there is a reduction of €100,000, to which €8,000 can be added for each year the person receiving the property is under 21, up to a limit of €156,000. For example, in the case of a father gifting an apartment to his 18-year-old son, the youngster will not pay any Gift Tax sum on the first €124,000 of the apartment’s value. For gifts to children over 21,
and those from children to parents, provided the person who receives the property has not previously held assets worth more than €600,000, there is a straight reduction for tax calculation purposes of €100,000. The same sum also applies to gifts between grandparents and grandchildren, although, in this case, there is an additional requirement for it to be allowed: the father/ mother must be dead. It means, when it is granted, that there should not be a living relative in the line of descendants or ascendants, between the grandparent and the grandchildren. These reductions have some limitations, which need to be considered, because gifts made in the previous five years from the same person will be taken into account. In addition, the reduction cannot be used when the person who transfers the property has enjoyed this same reduction in the last 10 years. The information provided in this article merely conveys general information related to legal issues.
through the latter half of December, as it was buoyed by the weakness of its peers. What do you need to look out for? In the UK, the focus will remain squarely on Brexit, with upside in the pound potentially capped by fears that Johnson will struggle to negotiate a new trade deal with the
EU, by the end of 2020. Meanwhile, a wide-ranging review of the European Central Bank’s policy strategy will begin in January, and is likely to keep EUR investors on their toes. For USD investors, the focus may be on US politics, with impeachment proceedings against President Trump potentially sparking some volatility in the US dollar. An owner’s dream-home despair turns to delight!
A BRITISH man has been awarded more than €150,000 because his off-plan, dream home on the Costa del Sol was abandoned by developers. A Madrid court has ordered that the company’s insurer pay the man €152,035. That is the sum the unnamed Brit put down as a deposit on the Costa del Sol property in Benahavis, more than 15 years ago. The buyer was forced to file a claim in 2005 following serious delays to the project. After several years he won his case, but by then the developers had
declared bankruptcy. As there was a collective policy with an insurer, he was told he would have to claim the money from them. But after almost 15 years of litigation, a Madrid court has ruled that he should be repaid the deposit, with interest. The win was made possible by a 1968 law which allows buyers to recover their monies, “regardless of the length of the deadline delay”. The insurance company argued that that law was replaced by Ley 20/2015, which came into force on 1st January, 2016. But the Madrid courts said that this newer version was not retroactive.

Midsomer Murders
Barnaby is less than impressed when Sarah drags him to a family friend’s wedding. But things soon go from bad to worse when tragedy strikes and Barnaby is called into action to catch a murderer with an apparent penchant for local brides. When BARNABY is dragged along to the wedding of SARAH’s friend HAZEL’s son, the last thing he expects to find himself doing is investigating a murder. But when SARAH discovers the body of the Bride, controversial radio talk show host LAUREL, ‘squeezed to death’ by her own wedding dress corset, BARNABY must look more closely at his fellow wedding guests - is one of them a murderer? New husband GAVIN is convinced that Laurel’s death had everything to do with her outspoken nature on her radio show; she had been receiving odd packages, including roadkill, in the post in the months leading up to her death! And so WINTER’s attention soon turns to her unique community of nocturnal listeners: the Nightshift workers, the insomniacs, the lunatics and the lonely.... the people for whom this radio show is a lifeline in the middle of the night. Barnaby and Winter also visit SERENA; Gavin’s scorned ex-fiancée and local wedding dress designer. She explains that 2 years previously Gavin had left her broken hearted when he jilted her at the altar, even getting his younger brother NOEL to tell her the bad news on his behalf. Barnaby and Winter’s investigation leads them to a local wedding fayre. They are there in time for the fashion show, but as they wait in the audience they are horrified when a second murder is carried out in front of them. Someone is brutally murdered with a tampered confetti cannon. The victim happens to also be dressed as a bride. On Hazel’s request, Sarah goes to visit elderly wedding guest MARCIA, who gives Barnaby and Winter another lead; Marcia says she saw Laurel approach a figure in the darkness shortly before she died; someone who seemed to have a hunch back who was smoking a cigarette... This incredibly specific and ever so slightly bizarre description of the killer gives Barnaby and Winter a new focus in their investigation, but will they hone in on their elusive ‘bride killer’ in time to save victim number 3?

Cornwall: This Fishing Life
Whilst other fishing communities are feeling the pinch, Mevagissey on Cornwall’s south coast bucks the trend, with 74 working boats in the harbour. Protected from the prevailing winds, with fish stocks that are beginning to return, and with boats being handed down from father to son. Meva is blessed. Now the next generation of ambitious young skippers are ready to make a go of it. Jack West fished with his dad growing up, and the family have decided the time is right to invest in Jack. Having spent thousands on the Anne Louise, the pressure is on to get out to sea and start earning some money. The Galwady Mor is owned by one of Mevagissey’s most successful fishing families, the Blameys. 27-year-old Chris is the 4th generation to go to sea. This year he takes over the responsibility of skippering the Galwady from his father Peter. The passing down of a lifetime’s knowledge is priceless, but Chris knows he will face different challenges to his dad. Whilst fish stocks are returning to Meva, there is not the abundance there once was. Mevagissey is a village built on fish - pilchards in particular. Once, everyone was after them. Now tourism is the main industry. The village is dominated by second homes and holiday lets, and the place is all but empty in winter.

Bancroft ITV1, 21.00 Free from the restrictions of her position, Elizabeth (Sarah Parish) is determined to bring the true murderer to some form of justice. Armed with information to solve the case, she heads straight into the heart of the viper’s nest. In a disturbing confrontation, she is forced to face her own demons.
Dracula The Dark Compass
BBC1, 21.00
Lucy Westenra seems to have it all. A beautiful and popular girl with no shortage of young men in her thrall. Yet Lucy seems to have an emptiness inside her, a longing for something else. Something dark and… other. One might almost say, ‘be careful what you wish for.’ For out of the shadows steps another suitor - with a familiar face! England is an unfamiliar world pulsing with fresh blood and fresh possibilities. There are strange sights and sounds everywhere, and Dracula wastes no time in laying plans to spread his foul vampire contagion in this new larder. After landfall in Whitby, where else to head but the gleaming lights of London? But why does Dracula set his sights on the seemingly ordinary Lucy Westenra? The legacy of Jonathan Harker’s stay in that far off Transylvanian castle comes back to haunt the Count as he finds himself unexpectedly checked by an alliance of formidable foes - one a steely scientist, another a callow young doctor in love with Lucy and determined to thwart the Prince of Darkness in his plans to dominate the world. As the adventure reaches its fevered climax, Dracula appears triumphant. Can anyone - living, dead or undead - stop him?

Hosted by comedian Jason Manford, First and Last is a game show that puts contestants through a succession of ingenious rounds, all of which have one golden rule – players mustn’t come first or last in any game. If they do, they will be eliminated. Eleven contestants start each show and compete across a range of five downright daft play-along-at-home games that will see one of them leave with a cash prize of up to £10,000. The first and last players are eliminated from each round. To triumph, they’ll need to judge every round to perfection and hold their nerve in the nail-biting endgame contested by the remaining three players.

The Twinstitute BBC2, 19.00
In the heart of Birmingham, doctors Chris and Xand van Tulleken have set up a unique centre for science. But theirs is no ordinary lab because inside it is crammed with 30 pairs of identical twins! Thanks to their matching DNA, identical twins are the perfect candidates for scientific comparison. Chris and Xand use this principle in The Twinstitute to put contrasting health theories to the test. Pairs of twins are split into two groups and each challenged to carry out a task. The results, from diet tips to health tricks, reveal ways we could all make lifestyle improvements. This is New Year New You tested scientifically!

WHITE HOUSE FARM In the early hours of Wednesday 7th August 1985, police in ITV1, 21.00 Chelmsford receive a phone call from local farmer Jeremy Bamber. Officers are called to an incident at his parents’ farmhouse, White House Farm. Jeremy’s sister Sheila, mother June, father Nevill and twin nephews Nicholas and Daniel are all found dead. The case appears to be open-and-shut to investigating officer DI Thomas ‘Taff’ Jones, who concludes that Sheila, who had mental health problems, is responsible for killing her parents and children, and then herself. But for DS Stan Jones, something doesn’t feel right. Stan’s concerns bring him into conflict with his superior officer Taff. He is given the responsibility of family liaison and told to toe the line.

Welcome To HMP Belmarsh With Ross Kemp
ITV1, 21.00
This brand new two-part documentary series for ITV goes inside the walls of HMP Belmarsh with Ross Kemp to offer a sharp insight into the harsh realities of life behind bars at arguably the country’s most notorious jail. With cameras gaining full access to the prison in South East London for the first time, Ross went inside the jail over a period of six months to find out what life is like inside the maximum security lock-up that has housed the country’s most dangerous - and infamous - convicts. Cameras follow Ross as he explores how prisoners and staff cope with high-profile inmates, extremists and common criminals living side-by-side, goes inside the High Security Unit – the only ‘prison within a prison’ in England and Wales - experiences the effect drugs can have on prisoners, and gets an insight into Belmarsh’s efforts to rehabilitate inmates. He also sees how this complex prison operates as a violent protest unfolds outside, gaining a full-access close insight into life for staff and prisoners while it goes into lockdown.

Don’t be fooled by today’s warm seas THE National Police have issued warnings to swimmers in Spain, following a man’s drowning, after he had taken “advantage” of warmer waters last weekend. Countless numbers of swimmers enjoyed Spain’s glorious temperatures across Spain, but the police warning was aimed at warm-water seekers. Spain’s balmy weather, which will see many coastal regions, such as the Costa del Sol, reaching temperatures as high as 20 degrees Celsius, has drawn sun-seekers from far and wide to the Mediterranean. Many tourists booked a lastminute trip to make the most of the December bonanza, with many local residents also planning seafront days to enjoy the sun. However, after a young man lost his life in Fuerteventura’s sea in an attempt to bask in exceptional temperatures, the police urged swimmers

to apply extra caution. The tragedy happened last Friday afternoon, when the man took a swim on Nido de las Águilas beach. However, after he had not been seen for several minutes by a lifeguard, the emergency services were called. A member of the local search-and-rescue team
found him unconscious in the water. And though CPR was carried out when he was brought back to shore, he went into cardiac arrest and died a short time later. Although Spain’s temperatures are particularly pleasant, the waters are still cold, in the sea and in unheated swimming pools.
Open water can be particularly dangerous, and it is advised to swim where it is safe, and to make sure that you can enter and exit the water both quickly and easily. Experts also urge people to not swim on their own, and to wear a swimming hat to help preserve body heat.
Why 71 planes have just been left in airports THERE’S a total of 71 planes in Spain’s public airports, in the middle of the long process of being declared abandoned and auctioned off.
According to AENA, the Spanish airports’ authority, Manises airport, in the eastern region of Valencia, and Madrid-Cuatro Vientos airport, have the highest number of abandoned planes, 24 and 19, respectively. Most of these planes belonged to companies which went bankrupt, or to owners who preferred to leave the plane at the airport, rather than pay off the accumulated debt for the prolonged parking fee, plus the cost of moving it and turning it into scrap metal. But can you blame the owners, because simply transporting a plane can cost more than €60,000, according to industry sources? The 2008 financial crisis led many companies to declare bankruptcy, and several planes to be abandoned. AENA said the high number
27 CW
of abandoned planes in Valencia was because of the airport itself. A spokesperson added: “Traditionally, it had a great deal of light-aviation activity through the presence, years ago, of various pilot schools, a flying club and a considerable number of flights from private companies.” A huge Boeing 747, known popularly as a Jumbo, is the most iconic plane that remains at the airport, and it has sat, at the side of the runway, for years. It used to belong to the Albacete-based charter airline Pronair, which ceased operations in 2009, two years after the plane first took off. The Madrid-Cuatro Vientos Airport has 19 abandoned planes. And says AENA: “This is because it mainly handles general aviation operations,
and is home to flight schools, training schools for pilots and cabin crew, state services (National Police and Spanish traffic authority DGT), companies that do aerial work, maintenance, trains maintenance technicians, manages drones; representatives-installers of aircraft manufacturers, and other associated equipment and service companies. “This means the two airports have a larger volume of aircraft, with different circumstances, susceptible to being declared abandoned.” But the AENA airport authority has not provided any information on the previous auctions, or whether they have been able to cover the costs involved in keeping the planes. In many of the auctions held previously, no buyers were found.
In 2014, there were 99 abandoned planes in Spanish airports, according to a response given by the conservative Popular Party (PP) government to the then Socialist Senator Domingo Fuentes Curbelo, now a government delegate in Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. These planes had an accumulated debt of €2.78m. The 2008 financial crisis led many companies to declare bankruptcy, and many planes to be abandoned. “We presented a motion and several initiatives to alleviate this headache for AENA, because the planes take up space and do not generate profit,” said Fuentes Curbelo. An alternative solution is to give the planes to museums, educational centres or fire departments, where they can be used in drills. “The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 jet airliner, in which the former premier of Catalonia, Josep Tarradellas, was transported when he returned to Spain from exile, was finally left in the Aviation Museum at Cuatro Vientos airport,” added Fuentes Curbelo.

Internet Safety
We are going to start off by providing some insight into one of the oldest, most-effective and frequently-used methods for stealing your data, or accessing credentials.
‘Phishing’ - and how it could affect you
“Phishing” is an extremelyfrom Direct Telecom effective way for hackers to get hold of your usernames and passwords, and this method is still being used, extensively, today. We find it worrying that even some of the people we know, who are extremely experienced with the internet and computing, get caught in the trap. We thought it might be useful to explain how this method works, and share some of the things you can do, to significantly reduce the chances of you falling for it, too. How does “phishing” work? Usually, you would simply get an email from Facebook, your bank, Netflix, or some other service you use, or are associated with. If you receive this email, it will appear to be completely legitimate. They are increasingly more sophisticated and precise, so they really do look as though they were sent by the company they are claiming to be. Sometimes, the content of the email will even greet you with your name, and then provide you with some information which will then prompt you to act. Usually, it would be something like: “We are contacting you because we need you to update some information in your account, to prevent it from being suspended”, or “Your account is on hold. Update your membership with us” . Of course, for your convenience, a link or a button is provided for you in the email, so that you can click on it to go directly to the place you need to be, in order to “update your details” etc. When you click on the link, however, it will most probably take you to an identical copy of the “login” screen that you would expect to see, a perfect copy of the Facebook login page, or from your bank. When you fill out your login information and click on “login”, your username and password is actually being sent to the hackers. On some occasions, the level of sophistication of these sites is so good, it will actually take you to the “real” version of the site afterwards, and log you in so that you suspect nothing. In the meantime, the

hacker has your credentials. What damage can this do to you? Once hackers have your username and password, there is a lot they can do with them. Some use them to hijack your Facebook account (identity theft), and take it over to post information, but more damage can be done by simply having the credentials, because there are thousands of websites and paid services that you can access if you “subscribe/register, using Facebook”. Clearly, if the “phishing” email is asking you to update payment details, then you are providing your credit card details to hackers. Needless to say, the consequences can be serious. In order to understand how this could affect you, just think about the services and platforms you use online, and what someone else could do with your account, if they had your username and password. The first thing the hacker usually does is to change your password, so you no longer have access, and they take full control. What can you do to reduce the risks? In most cases, the easiest way to spot these “phishing” emails is actually very simple. Just look at the email address that the email is coming
from! Nowadays, the email systems we use rarely show us the sender’s full email address. It just shows us their “declared name”. So I could send you an email stating that my name is “Facebook”, but my email address is completely unrelated. Even though your email software on your phone, tablet or computer is “telling” you that the email is from “Facebook”, “Microsoft”, “Netflix” or your bank, if you look closely at the email address it is coming from, you will probably find that the email address is not consistent with the company they are claiming to be. This week, I received an email from “Netflix” telling me that I should update my membership, and that they were unable to take the payment for my last plan. The email itself looked totally legitimate, with all of Netflix’s contact details, corporate information and links. When I looked at who this email was coming from, I could see “Netflix Support”. However, when I looked at the actual email address, written out in full, it was as follows: postmastera0r9ztdiuh7@ bzlink.sakura.ne.jp. As you can see, this email is clearly completely unrelated to Netflix, so I simply deleted it. What you need to bear in mind, though, is that some of the email addresses that these emails sometimes come from are also increasingly sophisticated, so they almost look real. For instance, the email could have come from something like: “accounts@netflixsomeotherdomainname. com/”. Even something like this is not a legitimate email coming from Netflix, it is an email coming from “someotherdomainname.com”. Even if the sender’s email address might fool us, and we click on the provided links or buttons, another tip is to check the URL, as to where this link is taking us. This will also help us understand if it is legitimate, or if the link has taken us to a website that looks totally unrelated. The safest bet is to be sceptical about any emails you get, especially when you were not expecting them. If you are unsure, leave aside the email. Don’t click on anything, and contact the company directly, to ask them if the email they sent is legitimate, or not.

A tasty breakfast treat! THIS bacon and spinach quiche is made with a sweet-potato crust, for the perfect breakfast.
If you need something to take to a big brunch, this recipe will feed lots of people, and it’s sure to impress. With a crust of shredded, sweet potato, and a filling of garlic, spinach and bacon, this quiche will be very popular. Start by cooking the bacon in the oven. This will yield perfect, crispy bacon that will crumble easily when drained of excess grease. Meanwhile, use a food processor to shred one large sweet potato. You could use a box grater instead, but it’ll take a little longer. Press the shredded sweet
potato into a pie dish greased with butter, and bake for 2025 minutes, to create the crust of the quiche. Prepare the filling for the quiche, while the sweet-potato crust is in the oven. Start by sauteeing garlic, onions and spinach on the hob, until softened. In a separate bowl, whisk six eggs, until fluffy. Slowly incorporate the spinach mixture and crumbled bacon, and pour into the pie crust. Then bake another 30 minutes or so, or until the filling is set. Ingredients *1 large sweet potato *6-8 slices bacon *1 tablespoon butter *¼ onion, diced *1 clove garlic, minced *5 ounces fresh spinach *6 egg *¼ cup coconut milk *salt and pepper to taste Instructions

*Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with tin foil, and lightly grease a pie dish with butter. *Lay bacon on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until crispy. Lay on a paper towel to drain
some of the grease, and set aside. Once cool, crumble, or cut into small pieces. *As the bacon is cooking, prepare the crust. Either using a food processor with a grating attachment, or, if using a box grater, grate the
sweet potato through the large grates. Evenly press the shredded sweet potato to the sides and bottom of the pie dish. *Be sure to fill in the holes as well as possible. Bake the crust for 20-25 minutes and remove it from the oven. Lower oven temperature to 375 degrees. *As the crust is baking, prepare the filling. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the onions for 3-5 minutes, until translucent. Add the garlic and spinach and cook a minute or two, until the spinach wilts. Remove from heat and set aside. *In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and coconut milk until slightly bubbly. Mix in the spinach mixture and crumbled bacon. Pour mixture into the pie crust and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the centre is fully cooked.

Health
By Val Sainsbury IT’S still a large misconception that women should not lift weights, and many still spend most of their time in the gym on cardio machines. According to the National Centre for Health Statistics, only about 20% of women practise strength training. It’s time for that number to change. Pumping iron, a few times a week, will not only trim inches off your hips and waist, it can transform your entire body and your health. The benefits of strength training can last hours after a workout, and can boost your mood all day. Lose body fat Weight training builds muscle, and, as lean muscle increases, so does metabolism. A higher metabolism means that you will burn more calories, all day long. Studies found that the the average woman who strength trains, 2-3 times a week, for two months, will gain nearly two pounds of muscle, and will lose 3.5lbs of fat. For each pound of muscle
VITAMIN C provides many health benefits, and it is used by the body in a lot of different ways. For example, your body uses it to form collagen, and it is also used in the creation of skin, ligaments, tendons and blood vessels. Vitamin C is also essential for repairing and maintaining cartilage, bones and teeth. The nutrient also plays a vital role in the wound-healing process, and the formation of scar tissue. It is also highly regarded for its protective benefits, such as the prevention of illnesses like the common cold. Vitamin C can help to prevent cancer, and it’s a potent antioxidant nutrient that blocks damage from free radicals. Dr. Sherry Ross, a Californian obstetrician says: “Vitamin C is a vital antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage caused by free

Weightlifting is so good for the ladies! you gain, you’ll burn 35-50 more calories a day. That can really add up, over the long term. For example, four extra pounds of muscle can burn up to 10 extra pounds per year! Gain strength without bulking One of the most-common reasons women avoid weight training is because they are afraid of “bulking”. This is a misconception, as it physically can not happen. Women simply don’t have the testosterone to build muscle like men. Women have 10-30 times less testosterone than men, and have a much harder time gaining size from strength training. Instead, women develop muscle definition and strength, without the size. Decrease risk of osteoporosis Weight training not only strengthens muscles, it strengthens your bones. Weight training increases bone density, which reduces the risk of fractures. Research has also shown that weight training can create a strong and healthy spine. Reduce risk of injury Weight training also increases strength in connective tissues and joints. Strong joints, ligaments and tendons are
important to prevent injury, and can relieve pain from osteoarthritis. Strengthening muscles and connective tissue will make injury from daily tasks and routine exercise less likely, and can even improve sports performance. Burn more calories Weight training has been proven to raise your metabolism for up to 24 hours, after a workout. The more intense the workout, the more calories are burned. After an
intense workout, there is more excess post-exercise oxygen consumption, or EPOC, meaning there is an increase in oxygen consumption, helping break down fat stores in the body. Improve posture and reduce back pain Weight-training will strengthen your back, shoulders and core, helping to correct bad posture so that you can stand taller, with shoulders back and spine straight. A stronger back and core will also prevent

radicals that we are exposed to in the environment, such as air pollution, cigarette smoke, and ultraviolet light from the sun.” To put it simply, Vitamin C has a wide range of impressive health benefits. However, there has been a strong indication that it may be even more powerful
than previously thought. Research has found that in addition to Vitamin C’s myriad of health benefits, it can also help to reduce the amount of lead, a toxic heavy metal, in the bloodstream. Lead toxicity can lead to neurological damage, in both children and adults. In
high doses, Vitamin C can lower the lead content of the blood. Their discovery comes with major, public-health implications, especially for developing children, when it comes to combating lead toxicity. While lead use has been banned for more than two decades, it is still quite possible to come into contact with it, especially in older buildings. Lead can be found in old, deteriorating paint, dust, and other older building materials, as well as contaminated soil. There is currently no amount of lead that has been deemed safe for humans, which only underlines the importance of these findings. Lead is extremely toxic. In their study, the researchers examined data from a
lower back pain. Enhance mood and reduce stress Exercise and weight-training release endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters that prevent pain, improve mood, and fight depression. An increased in endorphins naturally reduces stress and anxiety. Endorphins also stimulate the mind, improving alertness and boosting energy. Weight-training can brighten your entire day, or help you combat a bad one. national analysis of 19,000 people, including adults and children that were at least six years old. Children who were in the top third for Vitamin C blood content exhibited an 89% lowered incidence of lead toxicity. In adults, this effect was slightly more modest, with a 68% reduction of lead levels in the blood. According to the Global Lead Advice and Support Service (GLASS), Vitamin C reduces lead content in the blood through a process called chelation. This essentially means that Vitamin C binds to lead and carries it out of the body. According to GLASS, Vitamin C is not the only nutrient that can help reduce blood lead levels. Other nutrients, such as Vitamin E, Vitamin B1 (thiamine) and Vitamin B9 (folate) have also been shown to contribute to reducing lead content in the body. The best way to make sure you are getting enough Vitamin C in your diet is by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, every day.

2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 17.00% 10.97% 9.91% 7.20% 6.80% 6.88% 9.48% 5.85% 8.68% 5.54% This medium to long-term investment can be used for capital growth or income. This can provide clients with tax efficient income payments on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. You may also access to your capital at any time, so should you need to access your fund it can be transferred directly to your nominated bank account. This investment is suitable for basic, informed and advanced investors (as defined by the European Financial Management Association (EFMA)). Setting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. Spanish tax compliant means that any tax payable on the gain from your investment will be withheld by the provider of the investment and paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. You receive a tax certificate from the provider to give to your tax representative in Spain to confirm that tax has been paid. The investment is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Sebastian & St James provide financial advice on an international basis including investments, pensions, regular savings and international life insurance so wherever you are in the world, give us a call. If you have any questions, would like more information or to discuss options on your investments or pensions please email or call Sebastian & St James to see if we can help. Football
Luis Rubiales defends RFEF colleague over fraud charges THE Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is Spain’s football governing body, and President Luis Rubiales has, reportedly, defended his Vice-President Antonio Suarez Santana, over fraud allegations within the association.
Suarez is said to have been charged with improper financial activity, involving funds transferred between the main RFEF financial body and the Canary Islands Football Association. According to a report in Spanish newspaper El Mundo, and followed up by Marca, Suarez has been accused of two counts of fraudulent behaviour in relation to the Canarian Association. Firstly, he is alleged to have allowed a colleague to receive money, earmarked for the building of new
pitches in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Secondly, the 72-year-old is also accused of corroborating in a false application
from the Canary Islands, to secure RFEF funding for artificial training pitches on the islands. Neither project has been
completed, despite official records of the requests, and Suarez denies any wrongdoing in either scenario. President Rubiales has
declared his support for Suarez, publicly, yet the veteran official will face an RFEF internal inquiry on 21st January.

Tenerife to stage a Euro feast of class
IBEROSTAR Tenerife, who are hosting next month’s 2020 FIBA Intercontinental Cup, will represent Europe in the competition, alongside Champions’ League title-holders Segafredo Virtus Bologna. It takes place between 7th-9th February, with reigning G League champions Rio Grande Valley Vipers, and FIBA Liga de las Americas winners San Lorenzo completing the line-up, representing their respective Tenerife regions. They will be joined by Iberostar Tenerife, who finished runners-up in the Basketball Champions League last season, after winning the FIBA Intercontinental Cup the previous year. The competition takes place at the Pabellón Insular Santiago Martín, where the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2018 Final was staged, as well as the first Final Four of the Basketball Champions League in 2017. The Final Four format, adopted in the last series, will remain unchanged in Tenerife, with the two semi-finals played on Friday, 7th February, and the third-place game and the Final staged on the Sunday. This is the second consecutive edition of the FIBA Intercontinental Cup to feature the reigning champions of the NBA G League, Basketball Champions League and DIRECTV Liga de las Americas. The revamped, four-team format saw AEK Athens (GRE) claim the FIBA Intercontinental Cup title last year, with the European side beating Flamengo (BRA) 86-70 in the Final.
